:00:58. > :01:02.Welcome to the Olympic park in East London where in a few months the
:01:02. > :01:06.Olympic Games will have started and that building will be alive to the
:01:06. > :01:12.sound of British cyclists gunning for golden glory. What a high
:01:12. > :01:18.benchmark they set themselves four years ago.
:01:18. > :01:23.Chris Hoy takes gold! Victoria Pendleton is the Olympic
:01:23. > :01:26.champion! But after that beautiful
:01:26. > :01:36.breathtaking performance, it's fair to say the stars of the track in
:01:36. > :01:41.
:01:41. > :01:47.China haven't had things all their Oh, look at that, Australia are the
:01:47. > :01:52.champions. Now is the time for British athletes to put these
:01:52. > :01:56.memories to bed. Welcome to the biggest event so far on the park,
:01:56. > :02:00.live, track cycling from inside the Olympic Velodrome.
:02:00. > :02:04.It looks beautiful from the outside, even better looking when you get in.
:02:04. > :02:09.The only subject of conversation on the lips of the athletes today,
:02:09. > :02:15.finally, 2012 has arrived. This is much more than just another cycling
:02:15. > :02:25.meet. The next three nights are making sure they are in the perfect
:02:25. > :02:25.
:02:25. > :02:30.place ahead of what will be happening here in five months' time.
:02:30. > :02:34.Chris Boardman is here with me. Looking longingly at the track all
:02:34. > :02:39.afternoon. I am looking forward to watching tonight, I am glad I'm not
:02:40. > :02:45.doing it. Tonight's show is fast and furious. Before long, Sir Chris
:02:45. > :02:50.Hoy is going to be swapping his bike for the track in the men's
:02:50. > :02:53.team sprint. The women's team sprint is going to get us going
:02:53. > :03:00.tonight. Victoria Pendleton will be cycling for gold. This roof is
:03:00. > :03:06.going to lift as the girls aim to prove they are the perfect team.
:03:06. > :03:12.You are dedicating your entire year to one lap of this track, a start
:03:12. > :03:16.and a lap. When you put it like that, it soundsry Dick lus, my
:03:16. > :03:22.whole life is revolving around doing one lap of a velodrome. But I
:03:22. > :03:30.think that for me to be in the Olympic team in 2012, I had to do
:03:30. > :03:34.that. I am really looking forward to it, it is the event I am most
:03:34. > :03:37.excited about, I love working with Jess. It is so nice to be around
:03:37. > :03:45.someone who is so enthusiastic and optimistic about the future. Her
:03:45. > :03:53.career is going to be amazing. I have no doubts about that. Even if
:03:53. > :03:58.there is a ten year age gap! Sometimes people say it is pressure,
:03:58. > :04:03.it is pressure because I want to do as much - make people proud and be
:04:03. > :04:13.as fast as I can for Vicky, but we are a team and we have to do it
:04:13. > :04:14.
:04:14. > :04:18.together. Such tiny fractions of a second, make such a difference in
:04:18. > :04:23.the team sprint. How do you train for that? You prepare for exactly
:04:23. > :04:27.what you are going to do. Now I never do a hand held start, I start
:04:27. > :04:31.from the gate. I have started to do a few starts next to the younger
:04:31. > :04:35.boys coming up, they are faster than me so it is good to train
:04:35. > :04:39.against boys who are going to push you on. It is important as it is
:04:39. > :04:44.the first race on the track, it is a key opportunity to make the most
:04:44. > :04:52.and learn as much as possible. is the only chance to learn before
:04:52. > :05:02.the Olympics. They didn't look like they had to much to learn. One of
:05:02. > :05:13.
:05:13. > :05:17.new British record. They go in the final shortly and take on the
:05:17. > :05:20.Australians who set a new world record. That is what happens as far
:05:20. > :05:30.as the Gold Medal is concerned, coming your way shortly but first
:05:30. > :05:47.
:05:47. > :05:54.it is the fight for bronze. Znchtss We are looking at China here. In
:05:54. > :05:58.the back straight, it's France. China's time is well shy of their
:05:58. > :06:04.national record in qualification. The coach was not particularly
:06:05. > :06:08.happy when I spoke to him after that ride. He said that they didn't
:06:08. > :06:14.deliver. Let's see what they can offer here now. France have some
:06:14. > :06:23.work to do. They didn't replicate their record either. On paper it
:06:23. > :06:33.should go to China but you can never bet on it.
:06:33. > :07:09.
:07:09. > :07:12.the Bronze Medal. China take it on the line, with 33.06. We said it
:07:12. > :07:18.would be fast and furious. We have been on air for five minutes and
:07:18. > :07:24.the first medal given away, congratulations China. They have
:07:24. > :07:28.come on in the in the sprint events. They have worked very hard at this.
:07:28. > :07:32.It's been a slow progression, but they've got there. Interesting four
:07:32. > :07:36.years for a lot of them, because they took a look at the job Team GB
:07:36. > :07:41.did and they said we are going to do what you are doing and it is
:07:41. > :07:49.amazing to see how the standard has lifted. They focused on the
:07:50. > :07:54.sprinter disciplines. It's nice to see them get some results. They are
:07:54. > :07:58.cheering behind me, probably because Team GB girls have made
:07:58. > :08:03.their way out to the track. Let's look at the Australians in their
:08:03. > :08:08.round. They set a new world record. They are the team to beat. If we do
:08:08. > :08:13.beat them, what a way to start 2012. It is going to be a difficult task
:08:13. > :08:17.for them to achieve. But they are really close and I think they are
:08:17. > :08:24.in a better position than we thought going into this. It is not
:08:24. > :08:34.all over. They are on their bikes. There should be quite an atmosphere.
:08:34. > :08:52.
:08:52. > :08:59.record this morning. The first world record to have been set here
:08:59. > :09:07.in 2012. So Meares nearest to us, blazing her way down the track. She
:09:07. > :09:12.was the quickest ever opening 250. Great Britain have just been
:09:12. > :09:17.introduced, I can hardly hear me self speak. Jess Varnish nearest to
:09:17. > :09:24.us, a face of concentration. This morning she achieved her ambition.
:09:24. > :09:27.88.55, a lifetime best for her for the opening lap. Victoria Pendleton
:09:28. > :09:37.polished it off with a quick second loop. These two teams are going to
:09:38. > :10:11.
:10:11. > :10:21.slug it out for the gold and silver strait, let's, Australia at the
:10:21. > :10:33.
:10:33. > :10:41.that. A the result goes to Great Britain! What a ride that is.
:10:41. > :10:43.32.754, the World Champions are beaten. What a performance. I saw
:10:43. > :10:53.Meares and Victoria Pendleton shaking hands, which is very nice
:10:53. > :10:54.
:10:54. > :11:04.to see because they have slogged it out many times. That's a new world
:11:04. > :11:08.
:11:08. > :11:12.record! By Great Britain! Sensational. Jess Varnish gave the
:11:12. > :11:16.per perfect lead for Victoria Pendleton and she roared around the
:11:16. > :11:21.board. Victoria at her best. She crossed the line to give Great
:11:21. > :11:24.Britain a Gold Medal, what a performance. Over the moon with
:11:24. > :11:28.that. I don't think the applause will die away for a long time.
:11:28. > :11:38.Great Britain are the winners of the World Cup here at the London
:11:38. > :11:44.
:11:44. > :11:49.velodrome! Australia welcome to the Olympic
:11:49. > :11:55.year. It is like the World Championships. It was a perfect
:11:55. > :12:01.ride. A bit of a surprise to them because they came into this as the
:12:01. > :12:08.underdog. An awesome ride. Victoria Pendleton, the best union since
:12:08. > :12:18.2008 and that showed it there. we were watching it, you saw them
:12:18. > :12:23.going into the fib r final lap, she knew that, she was set up by
:12:23. > :12:26.Varnish, another fantastic start. When you were on the track, we
:12:26. > :12:31.heard from the girls beforehand saying what a great team they are,
:12:31. > :12:34.the crowd cheering, if you were a rider, what would this do for you
:12:34. > :12:39.five months away from the Olympics. You realise everything you worked
:12:39. > :12:43.for is worth it. Now is the time, you don't need a wake-up call, you
:12:43. > :12:48.need to know you are doing the right thing and that's what they
:12:48. > :12:55.got tonight. Jess varnic knows concentrating on one lap of the
:12:55. > :13:01.track and nothing else is the right thing for her to do. What happens
:13:01. > :13:05.now is everybody heads off to Melbourne for the Worlds. I am sure
:13:05. > :13:08.they would like to get one over after a ride like this. These
:13:08. > :13:13.events are going to be so close to the Olympics and that's not going
:13:13. > :13:21.to change, but it is nice to see us at the right side of the line.
:13:21. > :13:25.a great young talent we have here. I was speaking to the team earlier
:13:25. > :13:29.and they have been going forward. We saw the confidence and
:13:29. > :13:38.aggression in her face and the timing, in two high pressure rides,
:13:38. > :13:43.she's got it perfect twice. Huge smiles all around. Wonderful
:13:43. > :13:47.to see you celebrating with your fans and families. Jess, you bur
:13:47. > :13:51.yued your -- prepared yourself for this moment, how good did that
:13:51. > :13:56.feel?. I need to pinch myself, it's like a dream. A national record
:13:56. > :14:01.this morning to back it up and come through with a world record record
:14:01. > :14:05.tonight, how hard was it? It was hard, I didn't think I was going to
:14:05. > :14:10.have faster in the final, I was feeling tired after this morning.
:14:10. > :14:16.We have been doing a lot of fitness work, so it's worked. What message
:14:16. > :14:19.does this send out? We are a force to be reckoned with, we might be a
:14:20. > :14:29.fairly new team but we have worked really hard, we have done more
:14:29. > :14:38.training as a team than we have through our entire careers. Talking
:14:38. > :14:41.to your coach, now now it's well well worth it. When they say do you
:14:41. > :14:49.want to experiment, it is a risk you have to take, but now is the
:14:49. > :14:58.time, we want to do it before the worlds and before the owe imp --
:14:58. > :15:04.Olympics. The crowd are unbelievable. I was shaking, I was
:15:04. > :15:09.thinking, that's the crowd. I was shaking on my bike. Similar
:15:09. > :15:13.performance in a few months' time. Definitely. We are still in
:15:13. > :15:18.training, we wanted to try a few things out tonight, really positive
:15:18. > :15:22.for the Olympics. Thank you. The message is clear, keep on trying
:15:22. > :15:26.things out because it works. They talked about the atmosphere there,
:15:27. > :15:31.and it is not always easy to deal with the added pressure, there's so
:15:31. > :15:36.much pressure on these cyclists but to deal with it like that, it says
:15:36. > :15:41.a lot about them mentally. It is a packed house, they are not going to
:15:42. > :15:47.get louder than that in the Olympic Games. For an event like that, the
:15:47. > :15:52.crowd really helps. I think there is every reason to expect the same
:15:52. > :15:57.reception when they get there in August. The flags are flying here
:15:57. > :16:07.this evening. What a great start to our programme. There are more dress
:16:07. > :16:27.
:16:28. > :16:32.rehearsals coming your way over the night for the sprinters. The women
:16:32. > :16:42.have done their bit and now the message is clear. Men, it's over to
:16:42. > :16:46.
:16:46. > :16:51.you. Let's hope Sir Chris Hoy can 2012 is here, we are in it now and
:16:51. > :17:01.having a chance to race on a London track and compete in front of a
:17:01. > :17:05.
:17:05. > :17:11.home crowd, it is that first sample of the Olympic experience. Since
:17:11. > :17:16.Beijing all three events have been the focus. If I can get a bit of
:17:16. > :17:23.success in the lead up to London, I am hoping that is going to be the
:17:23. > :17:33.ideal preparation and I will repeat the same thing again in London.
:17:33. > :17:34.
:17:34. > :17:38.You are up against the world champion for that one spot. There
:17:38. > :17:41.is one position in those events, it is a shame because there are going
:17:41. > :17:46.to be some riders who will miss out from all countries who are world
:17:46. > :17:49.class riders, but it hasn't changed anything in terms of day-to-day,
:17:49. > :17:55.you put everything into your training for a competition. You do
:17:55. > :18:00.the best you can. It is a shame yourself or team-mate misses out.
:18:00. > :18:04.How many medals will you defend in London? That is really down to the
:18:04. > :18:10.next two races. If I can perform well this weekend and well at the
:18:10. > :18:19.World Championships in Melbourne, I will be starting to ride in those
:18:19. > :18:23.three events. You don't turn up to come second or third. Yourself
:18:23. > :18:29.Jason Kenny, Ross Edgar, they have been working very hard to be the
:18:29. > :18:32.best lead out man. You are up against a very, very strong,
:18:32. > :18:36.Australians, Germans, how do you think you can do. I believe we can
:18:36. > :18:46.do the best, but perhaps not this weekend. We are aiming to be the
:18:46. > :18:55.
:18:55. > :19:05.best in August. I'm sure he can do Ross has been working hard since
:19:05. > :19:13.
:19:13. > :19:17.You are looking at combinations and Ross has stepped up for me, it is a
:19:17. > :19:25.big opportunity for him. Let's not judge these boys too soon. I think
:19:25. > :19:31.we are in danger of people writing the team off here whereas in March
:19:31. > :19:36.2008, half a second out, and looking at it on paper, we want to
:19:36. > :19:40.do that again. Four years ago Chris we were hoping to play catch up
:19:40. > :19:46.with the rest of the world. Do you get the sense we are in a similar
:19:46. > :19:56.position, this is the qualification ride from last night, and the team
:19:56. > :19:56.
:19:56. > :20:02.sprinters won't be going for gold. Ross Edgar has been a solid rider,
:20:02. > :20:05.but today's team sprinters require 17.2 at least for a first lap and
:20:05. > :20:08.that is the challenge they have been facing and that is what we saw
:20:08. > :20:14.in the qualification ride. They have had four years to get the
:20:14. > :20:19.situation sorted out. How do they solve a problem like Ross Edgar?
:20:19. > :20:25.What What would you do? You have to use the troops you have got. They
:20:25. > :20:32.are using them the best they can. They are going to have to put Jason
:20:32. > :20:36.Kenny into man one spot, Chris Hoy into man three and Crampton between.
:20:36. > :20:46.This is what is happening in the men's team sprint coming your way
:20:46. > :20:46.
:20:46. > :20:50.There is another issue here, which is Kenny and Hoy and the question
:20:50. > :20:54.mark over who is going to be the individual sprint at the Olympics.
:20:54. > :20:58.If they made that decision now and told them, could they have a fiddle
:20:58. > :21:05.with the team sprint and move things around there and make them
:21:05. > :21:10.work better? You have two world class spribters capable of Olympic
:21:10. > :21:14.gold medals, but if you said to one right now you are not going to have
:21:14. > :21:20.that job, Jason man one, one lap of the track, that is your job for the
:21:20. > :21:30.next few months, you would have to change the traininging and it would
:21:30. > :21:31.
:21:31. > :21:36.have an impact on the result. Anne Payne has said what an awesome
:21:36. > :21:40.race that was, well done girls. Everybody getting very excited on
:21:40. > :21:44.twitter. Let's go live down to the track because we are going to have
:21:44. > :21:49.a look at the medal ceremony for the girls. The men's team sprint,
:21:49. > :21:52.how is it a problem for the starter, how is the training different for
:21:52. > :21:57.that compared to the individual? is less about speed and more about
:21:57. > :22:01.strength. Getting out to the starting gate, it is weight lifting.
:22:01. > :22:10.You can see it in their shape and in the women riders, they are a
:22:10. > :22:15.different shape, one is all power, one is about speed. It is a tough
:22:15. > :22:20.decision to make as a manager, saying to somebody who is genuinely
:22:20. > :22:25.right for a Gold Medal spot and both are so close, Kenny and Hoy,
:22:25. > :22:30.who would you choose between them, someone needs to make a tough call.
:22:30. > :22:34.It is either brilliant or brilliant. There is a danger, easy for us to
:22:34. > :22:39.make these hard decisions on their be half, but there is a danger to
:22:39. > :22:44.be a jack of all trades if you don't make that decision soon.
:22:44. > :22:53.There is Chris having a chat with his fellow team. What kind of a
:22:53. > :22:57.situation are these guys in now? Here we are riding for bronze, an
:22:57. > :23:01.example of how much the rest of the world have raised their game.
:23:01. > :23:05.France have the fire power, it's spread around. There is a lot of
:23:05. > :23:09.talent there now, particularly in the team sprint event and in this
:23:09. > :23:13.event, it is over so quickly, one tiny mistake and you are out of the
:23:13. > :23:17.running. They are very much in it but they are not the favourites at
:23:17. > :23:21.the moment. Now they are not going for gold, what are you looking for
:23:21. > :23:25.from the men? They have to see this competition through and that is
:23:25. > :23:29.what they will do, ride as hard as they can. There's no big changes
:23:29. > :23:35.they can make in a few hours. Now they have to get through this, go
:23:36. > :23:39.away and reassess. Would you expect Ross Edgar to remain man one after
:23:39. > :23:45.this tournament? It is a big call for them. I don't think I would.
:23:45. > :23:52.Ross is a great perform err, 17.7 is where he is at. You have to take
:23:52. > :23:58.risks. If you want to win, if you are not going for gold, you need to
:23:58. > :24:02.take risks. Interestingly, as much as they are on the same team, the
:24:02. > :24:09.ladies have raised the bar tonight. That was top-notch performance
:24:09. > :24:15.there. It was perfection. Perfection in
:24:15. > :24:22.front of a partisan home crowd here. Let's enjoy the girls getting their
:24:22. > :24:32.well-earned, well deserved Gold Medal. There they are, the
:24:32. > :24:47.
:24:47. > :24:57.victorious pair of Victoria The team from China are collecting
:24:57. > :25:24.
:25:24. > :25:30.They have been the World Champions for the last three years running,
:25:30. > :25:34.but have been toppled here tonight, the Australians, McCulloch and
:25:34. > :25:44.Meares. And then the glorious pair from
:25:44. > :26:03.
:26:03. > :26:09.APPLAUSE The crowd absolutely loving this.
:26:09. > :26:15.What a way to start the evening. A wave to the crowd, Jess Varnish
:26:15. > :26:20.on the left, she's worked so hard in the gym. Moving more weight than
:26:20. > :26:25.she's ever moved before and Victoria Pendleton, a wealth of
:26:25. > :26:30.experience, brimming over there, she rode a sensational second lap.
:26:30. > :26:38.Winners of the World Cup team sprint, Great Britain, Jess Varnish
:26:38. > :26:48.and Victoria Pendleton in a new world record, 32.754 seconds. What
:26:48. > :27:03.
:27:03. > :27:13.Victoria Pendleton will have on her mind the fact that Meares beat her
:27:13. > :27:13.
:27:13. > :28:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:28:05. > :28:08.last year in the World APPLAUSE
:28:08. > :28:13.Znchtss That is the first of many times we are going to hear that
:28:13. > :28:17.National Anthem over the World Cup competition here, which completes
:28:17. > :28:26.on Sunday. Top spot for the victorious pair of Victoria
:28:26. > :28:35.Pendleton and Jess Varnish. What a start this evening, what a
:28:35. > :28:45.start to the year for the girls and all that said, Team GB at the
:28:45. > :28:55.
:28:55. > :29:01.A team of three in the women's case have got to get from A to B as
:29:01. > :29:05.quickly as possible. Since the women have been riding this kind of
:29:05. > :29:09.competition, we have had four World Championships, Great Britain have
:29:09. > :29:15.won three of them. Let's look at the qualifying ride from Thursday
:29:15. > :29:25.night. We are in pretty good form. But some mistakes were made. They
:29:25. > :29:39.
:29:39. > :29:49.that start there, a second ahead with lap one. They got themselves
:29:49. > :29:49.
:29:49. > :29:54.in a good place. Wendy Houvenaghel has been swoped for Dani King.
:29:54. > :29:58.Let's see if it pays off. Is it a case of almost saying to the rest
:29:58. > :30:03.of the world look at our strength and depth, we can make it through
:30:03. > :30:08.the Gold Medal ride and still change our girls around. You have a
:30:08. > :30:12.opportunity, if you lose the World Cup, it is not the end of the world,
:30:12. > :30:18.here they want to - this is your last chance to try everything out
:30:18. > :30:23.to give Dani a seat in this as well. What does it say about the strength
:30:23. > :30:27.and depth there is in the women's pursuit. For a while in that
:30:27. > :30:32.qualification run, they were under the world record time. It is the
:30:32. > :30:35.most hard fought team to get into, five or six riders all fighting for
:30:35. > :30:39.these three spots and every training session is absolutely full
:30:39. > :30:44.on. The messages I have seen coming out of British cycling, they have
:30:44. > :30:48.been described as the heart beat of British cycling, clearly there is
:30:48. > :30:53.great hope for these girls, do they have best hope for gold? That's
:30:54. > :30:57.what it has been until now. For the last few years they have been
:30:57. > :31:01.strong and consistent. When we saw that qualifying ride, it is the
:31:01. > :31:05.first time I have seen them make a mistake in a long time. It is good
:31:05. > :31:09.it is now. This is Olympic year, if they are coming in as favourite, it
:31:10. > :31:14.is an extra bit of weight for them to bear. A good ride from the
:31:14. > :31:17.ladies. Going for gold here this evening. The men are going to be
:31:17. > :31:21.riding for gold on Sunday night. What did you make of their
:31:21. > :31:27.performance in qualifying? It was good. Again there was a bit of
:31:27. > :31:31.finding out where everybody is at. Geraint Thomas did long turns,
:31:31. > :31:37.perhaps they paid later fon that in the race. They got themselves into
:31:37. > :31:46.being in the final. They can make themselves go quicker. The
:31:46. > :31:51.Australians were impressive. I can see them learning a lot. Geraint
:31:52. > :31:56.Thomas was at the front for a lot of that. He did a lap-and-a-half
:31:56. > :32:00.turns, they can cut it to half a lap if they are slowing the team
:32:00. > :32:04.down. The first one of those helped the team and gave everybody extra
:32:04. > :32:10.rest, the second one might have been one too far. We will see the
:32:11. > :32:16.battle for the gold meedal. Let's return to the track. This is all
:32:16. > :32:20.about the bronze Netherlands against Australia.
:32:20. > :32:27.Looking at the line up there for Australia, they have made one
:32:27. > :32:37.change from the qualification. Edmond son nearest to us, Hoskins
:32:37. > :32:37.
:32:37. > :32:46.in the middle has been pulled out and replaced by Amy Cure and then
:32:46. > :32:56.Tomic. She will be the third rider in line.
:32:56. > :33:13.
:33:13. > :33:21.They are against the team from the Medal, 12 laps of the track.
:33:21. > :33:28.Settling down here. They start to get those big geres turning.
:33:28. > :33:32.Australian set a national record in qualification. That was 1.3 quicker
:33:32. > :33:36.than the Dutch. So the team from the Netherlands is going to have to
:33:37. > :33:42.find something here if they want to put pressure on the Australians for
:33:42. > :33:52.the Bronze Medal. The Australians have been World Champions on one
:33:52. > :33:53.
:33:53. > :33:59.occasion in this event. That was in 2010. Tomic is the only surviver of
:33:59. > :34:09.that line up here on the track. We are waiting for the first
:34:09. > :34:32.
:34:32. > :34:41.kilometre sprit. very well indeed.
:34:41. > :34:51.They will be smarting they didn't get into the final. It is not their
:34:51. > :35:15.
:35:15. > :35:21.profiting from that very good good start. They have 2.18 seconds
:35:21. > :35:25.advantage and they are actually focusing on trying to draw the
:35:25. > :35:35.Netherlands in. They have got them well and truly in their sites as
:35:35. > :35:56.
:35:56. > :36:06.cracks, a few signs of weakness. Towards the closing stages now.
:36:06. > :36:29.
:36:29. > :36:35.Medal. Australia made got a new world
:36:35. > :36:40.record. They have proven to be very quick. There was a lot of
:36:40. > :36:49.speculation about how they are going to ride. The world record is
:36:49. > :36:54.falling all the time. Then going so fast, the Netherlands, a pretty
:36:54. > :37:01.quick time themselves, 1.21. That is what made it look deceptive,
:37:02. > :37:10.both teams were going quick out there. It is hotter tonight. Fast
:37:10. > :37:16.Fast conditions, two world records. Very, very impressive indeed. Three
:37:16. > :37:18.world records now. Two in the team sprint and one in the team pursuit.
:37:18. > :37:24.These boards are proving to be quick.
:37:24. > :37:34.I am a firm believer that the track is a strack the track. The
:37:34. > :37:34.
:37:35. > :37:39.conditions are very, very fast. You can see everybody knows this is the
:37:39. > :37:45.big marker for the Olympic Games which is just a few months away now.
:37:45. > :37:55.I think really, the opening kilometre by the Netherlands helped
:37:55. > :37:56.
:37:56. > :37:59.underpin that ride for the Australians. They are finding that
:38:00. > :38:08.first kilometre, you have to get away really, really quick. There is
:38:08. > :38:12.no building into a ride any more. New world record now 3 set by the
:38:12. > :38:16.Australians. What a fantastic ride that was. We can concentrate on the
:38:16. > :38:20.contest for the Gold Medal now. We are looking at the team of Great
:38:20. > :38:30.Britain. I can tell you the team for Great Britain have made one
:38:30. > :38:32.
:38:32. > :38:42.change as well. The rider that has been pulled out is Wendy
:38:42. > :39:07.
:39:07. > :39:15.Houvenaghel. King comes in to who have never won a medal,
:39:16. > :39:21.suddenly the fastest qualifiers. Tara Whitten who will lead off.
:39:21. > :39:28.Gillian Karlsson and third jasmine glesser
:39:28. > :39:36.You are likely to see here Whitten, who is the Omnium world champion,
:39:37. > :39:46.likely to see her open up with 1.5 to 1.75 laps.
:39:47. > :40:05.
:40:05. > :40:12.this morning. Towards the end they began to crumble, but believe me
:40:12. > :40:22.they are going to write a text book team pursuit here.
:40:22. > :41:00.
:41:01. > :41:05.Great Britain have got far more Great Britain are on the same tempo.
:41:05. > :41:15.I can tell you, they are not far away from the pace of Australia.
:41:15. > :41:25.
:41:25. > :41:30.They do look at the smoother and cracks first here. The coach is
:41:30. > :41:35.looking up at the score board because he is bemused by that. I
:41:35. > :41:39.don't think he expected the Canadians to put up such a battle.
:41:39. > :41:43.You get the feeling that it is Great Britain that are dictating
:41:43. > :41:49.the terms and the crowd are lifting them. They are doing a very
:41:49. > :41:59.controlled ride. They are starting to ease ahead a little bit now. But
:41:59. > :42:32.
:42:32. > :42:36.now. They have the bit between their teeth. There could be a world
:42:36. > :42:46.record here. The crowd are loving it! Great Britain into the closing
:42:46. > :43:01.
:43:01. > :43:05.a new world record. What an amazing ride by Great Britain, they have
:43:05. > :43:13.won the World Cup and sent the news to the world, anything you can do,
:43:13. > :43:23.we can do better! That is what you call a text book ride. Fantastic
:43:23. > :43:23.
:43:23. > :43:33.ride by Canada, really did well nor a while there, but Britain executed
:43:33. > :43:39.
:43:39. > :43:44.that plan beautifully. It means the world record by by both teams set
:43:44. > :43:54.by Australia was smashed. This track is providing us with
:43:54. > :44:26.
:44:26. > :44:32.that per termance. -- performance. Wendy Houvenaghel sitting in the
:44:32. > :44:37.middle, the change proved to be profitable. A fruitful evening so
:44:37. > :44:41.far here for Great Britain. Two Gold Medals and two world records.
:44:41. > :44:51.You can't ask for much more than that. It's going to be a question
:44:51. > :44:52.
:44:52. > :44:57.of can they get them off the track as they celebrate. There is a
:44:57. > :45:00.glimpse of the technique as they come together for the line, the
:45:00. > :45:10.blanket finish. The time is taken on the third rider as they cross
:45:10. > :45:11.
:45:11. > :45:21.the line. Look at the face there on King. 7 Great Britain, two Gold
:45:21. > :45:31.Medals, two world records, astonishing.
:45:31. > :45:33.
:45:33. > :45:38.Great Britain win the team pursuit with a new world record.
:45:38. > :45:43.Chris Boardman was up in the commentry box. Another fantastic
:45:43. > :45:47.ride. Another world record. Just the gold isn't good enough!.
:45:47. > :45:50.Everybody expecting this in qualification and they were
:45:50. > :45:55.disappointed and now you can't move for the things. That was just a
:45:55. > :45:59.beautiful ride there. It was a risk putting Dani King in, she hasn't
:45:59. > :46:06.been well but it paid off. That selected the team for the World
:46:06. > :46:10.Championships. Let's talk about Canada for a moment. They haven't
:46:10. > :46:15.got a stellar background as far as track is concerned of winning
:46:15. > :46:19.medals, but they rode brilliantly. They did actually. They built a
:46:20. > :46:23.reputation around Tara Whitten, she has been their shining star. When
:46:23. > :46:27.you have one person like that, that is the first time we have seen
:46:27. > :46:37.Canada manage that resource really well, to actually look after the
:46:37. > :47:03.
:47:03. > :47:07.other riders and get the most out phenomenal performance, it took a
:47:07. > :47:12.world record to win that Gold Medal. You went out hard in qualifying,
:47:12. > :47:17.was there any danger in your performance tonight? We recognised
:47:17. > :47:22.our mistakes from qualifying. We knew we had a fast ride in us. We
:47:22. > :47:26.had to ride it better faced and get it right tonight. You are raoeuding
:47:26. > :47:34.to a fast schedule. You must have known that time was well within
:47:34. > :47:38.this group. We knew we had it in us, it was about riding it right and
:47:38. > :47:44.not coming out too fast. Coming in at the last moment, stepping up,
:47:45. > :47:49.what an amazing achievement. Amazing, this time last week, I
:47:49. > :47:53.wasn't 100%, but I want to thank all the people who believed in me,
:47:53. > :47:59.I believed in myself tonight, the girls were amazing. Thank you very
:47:59. > :48:06.much indeed. Congratulations. Back to Hugh
:48:06. > :48:16.Porter, seconds away from Chris Hoy looking to pick up his 50th medal
:48:16. > :48:44.
:48:44. > :48:51.in world competition. We are into advantage at this point.
:48:51. > :49:01.It's very, very tight indeed. Australia are still behind, but Sir
:49:01. > :49:11.
:49:11. > :49:16.Britain take the Bronze Medal. Australia tried to put Great
:49:16. > :49:22.Britain to the toward but Great Britain were victorious to the end.
:49:22. > :49:28.That is That is Chris Hoy's 50th World Cup medal. Where does he keep
:49:28. > :49:36.them all! They must have an enormous trophy
:49:36. > :49:46.cabinet. Is Chris Hoy still hungry for
:49:46. > :50:07.
:50:07. > :50:11.competition. starting style.
:50:11. > :50:16.Jason Kenny, fastest man on the planet for lap two and then we are
:50:16. > :50:21.looking here at Chris Hoy to complete the ride. Once again, Ross
:50:21. > :50:31.Edgar was the opening man and he will be happy to to collect a world
:50:31. > :50:34.
:50:35. > :50:41.Bronze Medal. Chris Hoy's 50th medal in world
:50:41. > :50:49.competition. It doesn't matter what this is,
:50:49. > :50:52.it's not about what the medal is, it's about the five months before
:50:52. > :51:02.the Olympic Games. He gave everything he had, Chris finished
:51:02. > :51:09.it off nicely. Explain the things they have done to make this a
:51:09. > :51:15.particularly quick track? Really, it is very smooth, but mostly what
:51:15. > :51:25.we are seeing here is the atmosphere. Low air density and we
:51:25. > :51:36.
:51:36. > :51:40.have very high temperatures. We are We are in the middle of a cold snap.
:51:41. > :51:50.It changes things a little bit. These guys get nailed down into how
:51:51. > :51:53.
:51:53. > :51:59.to do things. Right now it's Gold Medal race off. This is going to be
:51:59. > :52:09.some contest. It is the World Champions Germany, versus France.
:52:09. > :52:45.
:52:45. > :52:49.France have been ten ten times the they have been juggling the
:52:49. > :52:59.formation, they have not decided who will ride at the World
:52:59. > :53:07.
:53:07. > :53:13.Champions. It's very, very close. It's very,
:53:13. > :53:21.very close indeed. France are going well here. It
:53:21. > :53:31.could go any way at all. Germany are just ahead.
:53:31. > :53:31.
:53:31. > :53:41.The result is confirmed, a victory on the line for... Germany take it.
:53:41. > :53:41.
:53:41. > :54:26.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:54:26. > :54:29.The time is 43.631. Germany, and the result as you can
:54:29. > :54:37.see. Victorious World Champions as
:54:37. > :54:41.Germany take it 43.562. Gold Medal for Germany. France push
:54:41. > :54:48.them, but no great surprise, Germany the team to beat. As we
:54:48. > :54:56.look towards the Olympics and World Championships, how do you read the
:54:56. > :55:01.lie of the land. Surprisingly, Germany were lucky to
:55:01. > :55:07.get away with that. Those first laps were first but not the fastest
:55:07. > :55:10.we have seen. Every team has a lot of work. It says we have some raw
:55:10. > :55:16.ingreed ingredients and there is time to pull it together. You try
:55:16. > :55:18.to plan for an Olympic Games, but then you have this event and the
:55:18. > :55:24.World Championships. We are not seeing athletes at the top of their
:55:25. > :55:30.game. We will see them at the World Championships like that, but that's
:55:30. > :55:34.not very far away. I think really here, it is like an audit of form.
:55:34. > :55:39.This is the first chance to get a marker against the rest of the
:55:39. > :55:46.world and see where they are at. Bronze Medal for GB. Let's hear
:55:46. > :55:52.from the British boys. How did it feel to be out there on
:55:52. > :55:57.the Olympic track? Mega. It's a great crowd here, really enjoyed it.
:55:57. > :56:07.A big chance for you to show how you are doing with the man one
:56:07. > :56:09.
:56:09. > :56:14.position. How happy are you? I am looking forward to the World
:56:14. > :56:18.Championships and beyond so we'll see. You are not used to contesting
:56:18. > :56:28.bronze. I know you would like to be in the Gold Medal race. What do we
:56:28. > :56:32.
:56:32. > :56:37.read into this performance in the sprinting? We are coming back. We
:56:37. > :56:42.have been messing about a bit with the formation and we still have
:56:42. > :56:50.Martin, so we have moved forward. When you look at the gap between us
:56:50. > :56:58.and these guys racing for gold now, a couple of tenths. We can
:56:58. > :57:07.definitely get that back before the worlds.
:57:07. > :57:15.Your 50th World Cup medal. I forgot about it being the 50th, but I have
:57:15. > :57:22.never been to any venue and seen any home nation get the support we
:57:22. > :57:27.have today. Seeing Vicky and Jess in the podium, you get caught up in
:57:27. > :57:31.the emotion and it is hard not to let that distract you, but the
:57:31. > :57:34.noise from the crowd is unbelievable, and we have to thank
:57:34. > :57:39.the crowd, they have been the decisive factor in our performances.
:57:39. > :57:46.You try not to think about this, but it's such a feel-good factor
:57:46. > :57:51.when you turn up here. A Bronze Medal, you will be hoping
:57:51. > :57:59.to turn into into gold in a few months, what are will you have to
:57:59. > :58:05.do to change that? We are within striking distance, a length-and-a-
:58:05. > :58:10.half behind them, not a lot and we are not making excuses, this was a
:58:10. > :58:15.new formation, that was the fastest time we have done since 2009, we
:58:15. > :58:22.have a lot to be proud of today, it is not a goad medal but it is a
:58:22. > :58:27.medal we are very proud of and bring on the Olympics. Sir Chris
:58:27. > :58:36.back in action tomorrow as well as Victoria Pendleton. Plenty still to
:58:36. > :58:41.come this evening. Lots of live racing over on the red button.
