:00:38. > :00:48.Here comes Kelly Holmes, the crowd are on their feet. Denise Lewis, an

:00:48. > :01:27.

:01:27. > :01:34.Previously, Great Britain tasted victory, as well as bitter

:01:34. > :01:40.disappointment. Now, in the cauldron of Madrid, we have come

:01:40. > :01:50.full circle. Olympic qualification started here in the Spanish capital

:01:50. > :02:06.

:02:06. > :02:16.In this city this weekend, many Olympic dreams will end. It is last

:02:16. > :02:17.

:02:17. > :02:21.call to London. So, this is it - at the final chance for many

:02:21. > :02:28.triathletes they deserve to compete at the Olympic Games. Some big

:02:28. > :02:33.names who have qualified are missing from Madrid, most notably

:02:33. > :02:38.Javier Gomez, who is recovering from the flowers. We were hoping to

:02:38. > :02:45.see Alistair Brownlee, but as he hinted, this race was always going

:02:45. > :02:55.to be a big ask as he recovers from an Achilles tendon injury. His

:02:55. > :03:04.

:03:04. > :03:10.younger brother is here, on a The first race in San Diego was a

:03:10. > :03:16.good race. I was a shot I was going to race at the seven months of not

:03:16. > :03:21.doing a triathlon. It is a shame it is only two weeks ago because it is

:03:21. > :03:26.hard to recover from. Getting over jet-lag and the race itself. I am

:03:26. > :03:30.feeling fresh and I have been training well. This course suits me,

:03:30. > :03:36.it is a tough course, and I am looking forward to racing and doing

:03:36. > :03:40.the best I can. Alastair did want to raise, he is gutted he has

:03:40. > :03:45.missed it because it is a cause he loves. He has made lots of

:03:45. > :03:49.comebacks before, every year he has raised tear coming he has made a

:03:49. > :03:58.comeback. If it was a week later, he could have raced, but

:03:58. > :04:02.unfortunately he can't. Strong Yorkshire boys, but we don't really

:04:02. > :04:07.showed that emotion. Alastair will say, I'm missing the race and I

:04:07. > :04:13.would love to be their. That he gets on with what he loves, and

:04:13. > :04:21.what he does but he will miss the racing. There is no Javier Gomez,

:04:21. > :04:25.no Alastair and they are very prominent people in the race.

:04:25. > :04:35.Triathlon is a sport where anything can happen. Different races suit

:04:35. > :04:36.

:04:36. > :04:46.different people. It is a race where people have to qualify in

:04:46. > :04:50.

:04:50. > :04:59.their own right. Some athletes are very strong. The British people are

:04:59. > :05:04.here as well, it is still a good competition. London is definitely

:05:04. > :05:09.the biggest race to think about. This winter kind of showed that.

:05:09. > :05:14.Every week coming back to do interviews with the BBC being

:05:14. > :05:19.interested now and newspapers interested, coming on to television

:05:19. > :05:25.more, people recognising the more on the St. The Olympics is what the

:05:25. > :05:28.general public understand. They do think the people -- they do think

:05:28. > :05:36.of the only race I am going to train for this it is the Olympics,

:05:36. > :05:42.they ask me how my training is going for the Olympics. When I tell

:05:42. > :05:45.them I'm going to Madrid, and they wonder why am going. With that

:05:45. > :05:49.Johnny and Alastair said during their tickets to London last year,

:05:49. > :05:56.there is only one spot left on the British men's team and five

:05:56. > :06:01.athletes. Tim Don and William Clarke who is ranked 9th last year.

:06:01. > :06:07.Two triathletes who say they are aiming for the place at the Games

:06:07. > :06:11.to play two different roles. People have given up on it individually

:06:11. > :06:20.except myself. I am ranked number two in the world at the moment are.

:06:20. > :06:24.I have got to give it everything and tight -- focus on it. I am

:06:24. > :06:34.going in with a different progress to work hard on the swimming and

:06:34. > :06:42.

:06:42. > :06:47.Will looking for somebody to step up to us stand alongside Johnny,

:06:47. > :06:53.Alastair and Helen and be in a position to drive for a medal. Or

:06:53. > :07:00.they are looking for people to step up who can help those people win a

:07:00. > :07:05.medal. Can you explain how that can help in a swim and on a bike and if

:07:05. > :07:11.they can do anything on a run. Whoever they pick will be getting

:07:11. > :07:16.out of the water behind them. There will possibly be a breakaway in the

:07:16. > :07:21.swim, so it is getting on to that and keeping it away from those

:07:21. > :07:25.behind who are chasing. My was thinking about this guy Cycling

:07:25. > :07:31.team and Mark Cavendish and he has an entourage of people who have

:07:31. > :07:38.been training to get him across the line first in a gold medal position.

:07:38. > :07:48.That is amazing teamwork. He we are, eight weeks from the Olympic Games,

:07:48. > :07:53.and we don't know who those people can be macros --. A third person in

:07:53. > :07:56.the mix would be another person to help make it happen. If you get a

:07:57. > :08:02.puncture like Alastair did in the Europeans last year, it is somebody

:08:02. > :08:07.else who can help him back into the race. In the meantime Johnny is

:08:07. > :08:11.getting on with and winning the race from the front. It is crunch

:08:11. > :08:18.time in the Spanish heat, the battle for the final men's place on

:08:18. > :08:21.Team GB has reached boiling point. Team GB has reached boiling point.

:08:21. > :08:31.You commentator for the men's race is Matt Chilton. That is the seen

:08:31. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:53.from above the pontoon. -- start laps of this lady in the middle of

:08:53. > :08:59.the largest urban park or worst of central Madrid. And they will leave

:08:59. > :09:09.the water once and then diving for the second leg. What a sight of

:09:09. > :09:13.that is, a terrific start to. A total of 68 starting. 1,500 metres

:09:13. > :09:23.in the water. It is the Russian who has made a really good start in the

:09:23. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:30.water, which is a very pleasant. Very, very important. The bike

:09:30. > :09:36.courses very tough. Every do get a group going away, they will be hard

:09:36. > :09:39.to catch up. Jonathan Brownlee repeat his win hat in the warm-up

:09:39. > :09:45.and there was a few minutes of panicking before they found him a

:09:45. > :09:50.replacement a. Look how much the swim has spread out already.

:09:50. > :09:58.Everything at stake, not just the Brits, but all countries looking to

:09:58. > :10:05.get their last athlete qualified. Another look at the start. No

:10:05. > :10:14.problems like we had in San Diego with men going early. Everybody got

:10:14. > :10:20.a way quite early there into the lake. Things are beginning to work

:10:20. > :10:27.themselves, the arrowhead beginning to form as they hit the yellow

:10:27. > :10:37.inflatable sport a. The first man showing his number 61 and that is

:10:37. > :10:37.

:10:37. > :10:44.Richard Wagner from Slovakia. He is a leading them through. Two yellow

:10:44. > :10:52.inflatables to go round a. Slovakian was very clear before the

:10:52. > :10:57.race he would make it tough and try to get away. He has a chance to get

:10:57. > :11:04.to the Games through the small nations through Europe. He is

:11:04. > :11:09.making this a very honest swim. Jonathan Brownlee, number five is

:11:09. > :11:13.up what the leaders. Had the lead in San Diego, the second world

:11:13. > :11:20.Championship series events of the season. Did not make it to Sydney,

:11:20. > :11:28.so this is his second WCRS events of the year, hoping for two wins in

:11:28. > :11:34.a row. Such a key events, everybody wants to do well and nobody wants

:11:34. > :11:38.to miss out on the Olympic Games in Hyde Park on August 7th for the

:11:38. > :11:43.MEND stopped it is tough for the Brits, we have Jonathan and

:11:43. > :11:48.Alastair already selected. sorts of rumours, is there somebody

:11:48. > :11:55.good enough. The criteria is, will they get a medal? They may be

:11:55. > :11:59.looking at deferred athlete in the men's race to ask as a domestic. So

:11:59. > :12:05.many who is there to help. And this could be crucial in the Great

:12:05. > :12:11.Britain selectors thinking. whole selection process remains to

:12:11. > :12:15.be decided. We know Helen Jenkins is going, we know both Alastair and

:12:15. > :12:22.Jonathan will be representing Great Britain. The rest of the pieces of

:12:22. > :12:27.the puzzle remains to be put in place. Map complete the first of

:12:27. > :12:32.two laps. There will come out of the water on a ramp and then they

:12:32. > :12:38.will run along the pontoon and dive back in. Plenty of time to see some

:12:38. > :12:45.of the spectacle around the sport. It looks like it is the Slovakian,

:12:45. > :12:50.No. 61 who will be first out. Good swimmer from him. Key did say he

:12:50. > :13:00.was going to go for it. He has but Jonathan Brownlee in a great

:13:00. > :13:23.

:13:23. > :13:27.halfway across the lake while others are still diving in to start

:13:27. > :13:33.the second lap. That gives you a good idea looking back from the

:13:33. > :13:38.leader towards the pontoon just how the field has spread during the

:13:39. > :13:45.first 775 metres of this when. looking at the Slovakian from head

:13:45. > :13:50.on, what a beautiful stroke. And the water is so clear, you can see

:13:50. > :13:53.the wide, high elbow definition underneath. The guys who are

:13:53. > :13:58.following him it will be delighted he is giving them a clean swim,

:13:58. > :14:04.almost getting into the single line apart from seeing this situation

:14:04. > :14:09.going around the inflatables. late, in the middle of the park

:14:09. > :14:19.which is 6.5 square miles in area. Madrid zoo is within the park and a

:14:19. > :14:25.big amusement centre as well. Some of the swimmers getting caught on

:14:26. > :14:30.the turn, getting elbows and hands in the face. Very nasty, they need

:14:30. > :14:35.to find a way around as cleanly as possible, but it is easier said

:14:35. > :14:40.than done. Surprising on the second lap, you expected to on the first

:14:40. > :14:43.lap, on the first inflatable, but as it has stretched out, maybe a

:14:43. > :14:49.couple of the swimmers trying to go inside and then being forced almost

:14:49. > :14:55.into the inflatable. By the looks of things at the moment, we will

:14:56. > :15:05.have a group going on to the back, which is a 40 kilometres. 12 or 15

:15:06. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:22.Bryukhankov. And Alessandro Fabian. They set into the transition to

:15:22. > :15:26.pick up their bicycles. They will have it laps around the park, a

:15:26. > :15:31.hugely difficult course. Full of all sorts of technically demanding

:15:31. > :15:36.elements. We spoke to the athletes about this. This will be tough, it

:15:36. > :15:40.has a big hill and it makes it great to watch. It is tough to

:15:40. > :15:44.climb and it goes on, you think you're at the top and it keeps

:15:44. > :15:50.going. Re the tough, eight laps around that caused his release

:15:50. > :15:58.sapping. It can change things. If you are not strong enough on a bike,

:15:58. > :16:03.you will not run fast. Aaron Harris coming through for Great Britain.

:16:03. > :16:10.The helmets go on. And the sunglasses as well. There is Jonny

:16:10. > :16:16.Brownlee. He will not worry too much about losing his place.

:16:16. > :16:21.Brownlee wants to be within the leaders as they head out to begin.

:16:21. > :16:25.Jonny Brownlee said he wanted a hard some, very hard bike on this

:16:25. > :16:30.course and then to see what would happen with what he considers to be

:16:30. > :16:37.an honest run. Working hard from that front, right from the very

:16:37. > :16:45.first. That is a tough climb, coming out of the transition.

:16:45. > :16:55.can see downtown Madrid with the skyscrapers. Riding with one of the

:16:55. > :16:55.

:16:55. > :17:01.Spanish athletes, now. Their best in the past few years. Javier Gomez.

:17:01. > :17:05.He has not taken place in the World Championship events. In different

:17:05. > :17:11.circumstances, we have not yet seen Alistair Brownlee because of his

:17:11. > :17:15.injury. Jonny Brownlee, we saw what he did it in San Diego. If he is

:17:15. > :17:19.second in the world and in his family at the moment, allegedly,

:17:19. > :17:25.you can just imagine what the rest of the world will think. If he sets

:17:25. > :17:29.out his stall, you have to say, this is the kiss of death but the

:17:29. > :17:39.rest of the world are looking at these brothers and they are faring

:17:39. > :17:40.

:17:40. > :17:44.them. The second group, six riders. Hoping to close the gap. At the

:17:44. > :17:48.head of things, Alexander Bryukhankov, from Russia, he

:17:48. > :17:55.finished in 5th place in Sydney. The Russians have some very

:17:55. > :18:01.talented guys. They are outside chances for medals in Hyde Park in

:18:01. > :18:06.early August. Jonathan Brownlee, the left of the screen. Putting the

:18:06. > :18:14.pressure on his opponents. Making them work hard as they come to the

:18:14. > :18:24.end of lap one. Elapsed time, 26.5 minutes. Through the transition for

:18:24. > :18:24.

:18:25. > :18:28.the first time. Maik Petzold. Alexander Bryukhankov. And the

:18:28. > :18:36.Italian, Alessandro Fabian. And Dmitry Polyanskiy, one of the

:18:36. > :18:41.highly fancied Russians. Stuart Hay is coming through. One of the

:18:41. > :18:46.longest serving members of the British team. Always a good lad, I

:18:46. > :18:52.hope he does well. Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes. They are looking at

:18:52. > :18:56.each other. I have the utmost respect for Alexander Bryukhankov,

:18:56. > :19:01.he is a big man and you get a tough course like this and he is lagging

:19:01. > :19:04.with that extra weight. But he will do his work right the way through

:19:04. > :19:09.to make sure when they come off on to the second discipline, he will

:19:09. > :19:14.give himself a chance. And he isn't built like a classic 10,000 metres

:19:14. > :19:19.runner but he is so powerful, he puts himself into contention in

:19:19. > :19:24.every single race. The intense heat, not much of an opportunity to get

:19:24. > :19:32.any shade on the bikes. The trees are not offering too much shade.

:19:32. > :19:41.Jonny Brownlee. Increasing the pace. Maik Petzold, from Germany, his

:19:41. > :19:48.father was one of the first-ever triathlete for East Germany. In the

:19:48. > :19:54.early 1980s. Stuart Hayes. Up with the leaders. And the second group,

:19:54. > :20:00.getting closer, towards the front. They will be hoping to join up and

:20:00. > :20:07.work together as a group of 25 or 30. We could have one huge group

:20:07. > :20:16.cent. The gap is closing between the lead group and the chasers. The

:20:16. > :20:21.transition. We have seen them going past, can they catch up? It will be

:20:21. > :20:26.a big ask, Johnny is striving hard. That group is quite strong. They

:20:26. > :20:31.have also been given instructions on what they are looking for for

:20:31. > :20:36.domestic and they need to show that only that they have a horse power

:20:36. > :20:42.to make a difference but the intelligence to make a difference.

:20:42. > :20:51.That does not mean chasing everything that goes. Elaborate on

:20:51. > :20:55.those thoughts? He was not saying. One would hesitate at the

:20:55. > :21:00.instructions might be that maybe we do not work too hard so we can get

:21:00. > :21:04.Jonny Brownlee away. That is the inference I would take an be

:21:04. > :21:09.referred to the Cycling format and that is what we have seen, if you

:21:09. > :21:14.have the leader in your group a way, your job is to back off so we do

:21:14. > :21:19.not get the break on. That lead of over one minute already in the

:21:19. > :21:29.Cycling, that is stunning and that will be so hard to close down.

:21:29. > :21:29.

:21:29. > :21:36.men making up the lead group. Food is that we're will belong to? One

:21:36. > :21:45.of the Russians. This is the chase group. That is a big pack of 30 or

:21:45. > :21:49.so. We are not baking in roads. We have a big group presence. We saw

:21:50. > :21:55.Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes, not yet Tim Don, one of the very few

:21:55. > :21:59.athletes who have been in three Olympic Games. He would love to

:21:59. > :22:04.make the new Olympics on his home territory. Londoner through and

:22:04. > :22:08.through. Up again, Jonny Brownlee, he has been at the front throughout.

:22:08. > :22:13.He will be barking orders to the others, telling them that he will

:22:13. > :22:18.not do all the work himself and he needs to keep pace. He is a very

:22:18. > :22:26.vocal athlete in the middle of a race. And you have Alexander

:22:26. > :22:29.Bryukhankov, more than happy to call himself the same way. Even the

:22:29. > :22:36.swimming, he came out, looking at 10 and followed him in transition

:22:36. > :22:40.and thought, let's go within every single time. This is his first

:22:40. > :22:43.transition after the swim. Very calm and collected, the 22 year-old

:22:43. > :22:48.from the University of Leeds currently in the middle of a

:22:48. > :22:57.history degree. I am not quite sure he is giving that his full

:22:57. > :23:02.attention at the moment! He was in Beijing and the World Championship

:23:02. > :23:06.event last year, the World Championship event, he took gold.

:23:06. > :23:11.In the intense heat in Switzerland last August. Still nine of them,

:23:11. > :23:17.out front, nobody has made that trip from the chase group to join

:23:17. > :23:25.the leaders. Number four. Sven Riederer, the Olympic bronze

:23:25. > :23:31.medallist. In Athens. Some of these guys have had such long careers. We

:23:31. > :23:36.often talk about the ultimate length of world level, 10 - 12

:23:36. > :23:39.years and some of these guys have been there for that amount of time

:23:39. > :23:45.and with the 4th Olympic Games, being London, everybody wants to

:23:45. > :23:49.race in London. We are possibly the best triathlete nation in the world.

:23:49. > :23:56.We talk about America and Australia but the British, they look to us to

:23:56. > :24:02.see what they can be doing. Dmitry Polyanskiy, banning out early. That

:24:02. > :24:06.might be a tactical problem. Back with the leaders. There were nine

:24:06. > :24:15.of them and there are still nine of them. Nobody has made that decisive

:24:15. > :24:20.break. Working together. Of the nine men in there, he is confident

:24:20. > :24:24.they the best through 10,000 metres. He is, he will be relishing this,

:24:24. > :24:28.he will not mind doing as much work as he is being asked to do because

:24:28. > :24:32.if we have big runners in the second pack, there is no

:24:32. > :24:38.opportunity for them to catch up. If they keep extending that time

:24:38. > :24:43.difference, lapped by lap. We have some tight turns on this but with

:24:43. > :24:49.that small leading pack of nine athletes, there is the first sight

:24:49. > :24:53.of Tim Don. Just behind Will Clarke. And Stuart Hayes. The three Brits

:24:53. > :25:03.he would be looking for that third spot, all together and being very

:25:03. > :25:06.aware of each other. Well one of them get a slot? That is the big

:25:06. > :25:11.question that will be answered on June the eighth, when the

:25:11. > :25:18.announcement will be made, the final team will be presented to the

:25:18. > :25:23.media on June the eighth. Three Russians in the leading pack,

:25:23. > :25:27.Dmitry Polyanskiy. Alexander Bryukhankov. Great performances by

:25:27. > :25:36.the Russians. They give everything. Jonny Brownlee will not having them

:25:36. > :25:46.around. Tremendous stuff. And Alessandro Fabian, he is having one

:25:46. > :25:48.

:25:48. > :25:55.of the best races I have ever seen throughout his career. They head

:25:55. > :26:03.towards the next hill in the park. Rehydrate in, getting that energy

:26:03. > :26:08.and the food down them. No. 2, Alexander Bryukhankov. And

:26:08. > :26:14.Alessandro Fabian, the Italian, in illustrious company. We have not

:26:14. > :26:19.seen too much in the past but I gather he is very highly rated.

:26:19. > :26:22.is good. He has got better year rankings year by year and this is

:26:22. > :26:30.the Olympic year, this is the opportunity, the one that everybody

:26:30. > :26:34.wants to be in. You just know, as you said, with Jonny Brownlee being

:26:34. > :26:38.focal, he will be encouraging everybody else to do the work and

:26:38. > :26:45.it looks like the a working together extremely well, just to

:26:45. > :26:50.have so much lead time. Through their Come, Dmitry Polyanskiy in

:26:50. > :26:55.amongst that Group, 26 years old and from Moscow but originally from

:26:55. > :27:02.Siberia. His great hero was Alexander Popov, the 50 metres

:27:02. > :27:12.summer. One lap to go. Jonathan Brownlee, he leads, Alexander

:27:12. > :27:12.

:27:12. > :27:17.Bryukhankov. First out of the water. Aurelien Raphael. Alessandro Fabian.

:27:17. > :27:21.And Dmitry Polyanskiy. Untroubled as they exit the transition for one

:27:21. > :27:25.more attack around the park. The final lap coming up in this World

:27:25. > :27:29.Championships series. The awareness of Jonny Brownlee, somebody takes

:27:29. > :27:38.the lead, he looks up and he just looks over his shoulder to see if

:27:38. > :27:43.that he has established. A vocal, he certainly is. Commanding the

:27:43. > :27:47.Slade. Getting the others working with him and for him. And the time

:27:47. > :27:57.difference, I am sure we will see it sometimes in... Look at that.

:27:57. > :28:02.Two minutes. You do not see that at this level very often. Two minutes

:28:02. > :28:06.and 18 seconds between the first man through and the next, the first

:28:06. > :28:16.guy in the chase back. That includes Tim Don, Stuart Hayes and

:28:16. > :28:20.

:28:20. > :28:30.one or two other Olympic wannabes from the British team. David MacNee,

:28:30. > :28:35.

:28:35. > :28:40.29th place. Unable to keep tabs on the script. It is still great

:28:40. > :28:45.riding at the front. I answer to my memory to think there has ever been

:28:45. > :28:50.anybody capable of closing that two-minute gap coming up to the

:28:50. > :28:54.second lap and the only person is back in Sydney. That is of a one

:28:54. > :29:01.decade ago. At this level, the present level, that will be

:29:01. > :29:05.impossible. Will Clarke has lodged a breakaway at the front of the

:29:05. > :29:08.chase group, he has only managed to get 10 metres advantage over the

:29:08. > :29:15.rest of them. They will swallow him up pretty quickly. Not much

:29:15. > :29:20.happening. Out in front, the lead group, towards the transition. Look

:29:20. > :29:25.at those feet. They will start to prepare nice and early. Jonathan

:29:25. > :29:31.Brownlee on the left. He has his feet out of his shoes and resting

:29:31. > :29:37.them on the pedals. The pedals and shoes are one single unit. And they

:29:37. > :29:43.arrive at the dismount. The Blue Flag. They have to hit the carpet

:29:43. > :29:47.on their bare feet. Jog towards the allotted. In transition, everything

:29:47. > :29:53.is by the book. The bike has to be hung up and the helmet has to go

:29:53. > :30:01.into the plastic box. The shoes go on quickly. Tightened nice and

:30:01. > :30:10.quickly and away they go. That was quick by Jonny Brownlee. He is away.

:30:11. > :30:17.Alongside the Slovakian. First in and first out. Richard Varga. What

:30:17. > :30:27.has happened? Alessandro Fabian. He isn't running. Something has gone

:30:27. > :30:33.

:30:33. > :30:41.seriously wrong. I think he was transition, but I feel sorry for

:30:41. > :30:46.him. A real problem. Tim Don has arrived, a couple of minutes down.

:30:47. > :30:50.Now is his chance to strike his last chance, possibly to gain a

:30:50. > :30:56.Olympic selection. While all that has been going on, John Lee

:30:56. > :31:02.Brownlee has broken away. He looks fall of running and is sprinting

:31:02. > :31:07.away from the rest of them. Determined to open up a decent gap.

:31:07. > :31:11.And he almost collided with the motorcycle on that bend. It is all

:31:12. > :31:18.happening here. Johnny Brownlee leading the way. I think we will

:31:18. > :31:26.head down back to transition where we are talking to the British

:31:26. > :31:33.triathlon performance coach. Johnny has a huge lead of 2.5 minutes on

:31:33. > :31:43.the other Brits, this race is over? It is as far as the Brits, no one

:31:43. > :31:43.

:31:43. > :31:51.will catch him. Honest from him, and honest running from Johnny

:31:51. > :31:57.Brown late. The Russian was the man who had the determination. Tim Don

:31:57. > :32:02.the sitting forlornly at the side of the cause. The looks as if his

:32:02. > :32:11.dream of competing in the Olympic Games is at an end. Tim Don has

:32:11. > :32:20.withdrawn from the Madrid triathlon. Look at the easy style of Jonathan

:32:20. > :32:25.Brownlee. He is built like a 10,000-metre runner. The Russian is

:32:25. > :32:34.a big man. But he has guts. Kiwis the one he went with him and has

:32:34. > :32:39.got ahead of the chasers. -- he was the one. Johnny Brownlee has just

:32:39. > :32:44.absolutely torn this field a part. Utmost respect the other Russian

:32:44. > :32:50.coming through. Look at the pain and his face false start his eyes

:32:50. > :32:54.are covered up. Russia are having a great day, second and third at the

:32:54. > :32:57.moment. But this is the man at class apart from the rest of the

:32:57. > :33:07.world, apart from his brother who is coming back from injury very

:33:07. > :33:10.

:33:10. > :33:14.soon as. Jonathan Brownlee takes the bell and begins his final lap.

:33:14. > :33:20.Great performance from Johnny Brown lead. All the applause coming

:33:20. > :33:26.through, still a lap to go. He is not acknowledging that, total focus

:33:26. > :33:30.and concentration. He has been in hot conditions, and he knows he

:33:30. > :33:35.needs one focal point in his mind to go through its. The Russian

:33:35. > :33:42.currently in second. Finished 24th in Beijing four years ago. 11th

:33:43. > :33:46.over all in the 2011 World Championship standings. I don't

:33:46. > :33:51.think he is as shattered as he looks. Nothing he makes it look

:33:51. > :34:01.more painful than it is. It is to scare all the other Russian is

:34:01. > :34:05.

:34:05. > :34:12.coming up and overtaking him. all about one name in world

:34:12. > :34:18.triathlon at the moment. Jonathan Brownlee, but his brother will be

:34:18. > :34:23.at home watching this. Happy for his brother, I am sure, but

:34:23. > :34:31.frustrated he is unable to give his brother a run for his money. It is

:34:31. > :34:35.time for him to start enjoying the moment in Madrid. He did not like

:34:35. > :34:39.the trip to Sydney and opted out of that one. He has so much advantage

:34:39. > :34:44.over the rest of the field and he is still looking like he is

:34:44. > :34:50.cruising. He is directed on to the blue carpet to enjoy the moment.

:34:50. > :34:55.Jonathan Brownlee about it finished in under one hour, 52 minutes. What

:34:55. > :35:00.an incredible performance from Jonathan Brownlee. No one could go

:35:00. > :35:06.with him, as soon as he left transition, after depositing his

:35:06. > :35:10.bike he was in a different league. He can slalom his way towards the

:35:10. > :35:16.finish and soak up the atmosphere in Madrid. Johnny Brownlee wins

:35:16. > :35:21.again, as he did in San Diego. Right now, there is nobody to touch

:35:21. > :35:27.him. Congratulations. Mule of the course,

:35:27. > :35:37.and it loves You? He is the perfect race. I wanted to break out after

:35:37. > :35:44.the swim and we had a great time. The bike was a great pack. Everyone

:35:44. > :35:54.was working very well together. Congratulations on your gold medal.

:35:54. > :36:03.

:36:03. > :36:07.I am very happy. This weekend it is the Johnny's course. This weekend

:36:07. > :36:12.for start the Russian is in second position and he waits and watches

:36:12. > :36:19.as his team mate, Dmitri parley and ski, the Siberian comes home to

:36:19. > :36:24.finish in third position. Aside from John Reid Brownlee's

:36:24. > :36:30.when it wasn't a good day for the British team. Withdraw roles for

:36:30. > :36:34.Tim Don and Will Clarke. Needed not finish, are you OK? My goal was to

:36:34. > :36:38.swim as well as I could and show the selection team what I can go

:36:39. > :36:45.and I think I did that. You think you sent the right message to the

:36:45. > :36:55.selection team? On the first lap of the bike, I was the strongest in my

:36:55. > :37:05.pack. I think they notice that. Confirmation of a stunning win for

:37:05. > :37:17.

:37:17. > :37:23.Johnny Brownlee by 40 seconds ahead the gold medal in 2012,

:37:23. > :37:25.representing Great Britain, Jonathan Brownlee! Johnny Brownlee

:37:26. > :37:30.steps up onto the podium and I would imagine he is casting his

:37:30. > :37:40.mind forward to the podium that it really matters this summer, coming

:37:40. > :37:41.

:37:41. > :38:48.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 67 seconds

:38:48. > :38:53.for the playing of the national The women's line-up is also without

:38:53. > :38:57.it world champion, Helen Jenkins. With a gold medal and silver in the

:38:57. > :39:07.bag already this season, she has decided to take a rest. We found

:39:07. > :39:17.

:39:17. > :39:22.San Diego was one of my best races ever. I felt great on the day, had

:39:22. > :39:27.a really good swim. And the run was fantastic and I felt brilliant.

:39:27. > :39:35.Hopefully I can replicate that again. Sydney and San Diego have

:39:35. > :39:41.gone really well, with a second and it a first. There was no need to

:39:41. > :39:51.get another race in. I decided to have an easy week after San Diego

:39:51. > :39:58.

:39:58. > :40:04.Mark had already booked the flight still go out, to look at the race

:40:05. > :40:13.and see what is happening. You can always gain knowledge from watching

:40:13. > :40:23.competitors. Andrea will be up there. And Aileen Morrison, who has

:40:23. > :40:24.

:40:24. > :40:29.had a great string of results recently. Paula and Andrea are two

:40:29. > :40:37.of that big favourites. Andrea has not been off the podium since last

:40:37. > :40:41.year. She is very consistent. Paula has obviously, I think she has one

:40:41. > :40:45.more triathlon series races than any one. There is always the

:40:45. > :40:50.Australians as well, you can never count them out. It is nice not to

:40:50. > :40:53.be racing everyone in every race. When you get to the Olympics and

:40:53. > :40:59.you are on the start line, you don't know what to expect from the

:40:59. > :41:04.competitors. There is a lot more hype, and I have been away for two

:41:04. > :41:09.months., so to come back, even if I had not done so well in San Diego,

:41:09. > :41:13.I would have felt the Olympic spirit getting bigger. There is

:41:14. > :41:18.more press and the tensions. It definitely put a little bit more

:41:18. > :41:23.pressure on myself for having a good few races. The main difference

:41:23. > :41:28.is a lot more people watching, more people will care what happens. As

:41:28. > :41:33.an athlete, it is the same distance, the same athletes, the same

:41:33. > :41:41.officials. It is trying to keep it in perspective and focus on that,

:41:41. > :41:47.rather than all the other hype and pressures. Two more female trier

:41:47. > :41:51.things can join her in Team GB, unlike the men's this race is there

:41:51. > :41:55.final test before selectors close their doors for deliberations. Liz

:41:55. > :41:59.Blatchford and Vicky Holland came 5th in San Diego. But both goals

:41:59. > :42:03.could miss out if British triathlon decide to use team tactics and a

:42:03. > :42:13.walk the spots two athletes they feel are better suited to help

:42:13. > :42:15.

:42:16. > :42:20.Helen get a medal. -- award. It is the last qualifying race, but when

:42:20. > :42:23.you go into a race knowing you have done everything you can to put

:42:23. > :42:28.yourself into a position to have a good result, you have to go out

:42:28. > :42:33.there on the day and show what you're capable of. We have had our

:42:33. > :42:39.selection policy for a long time, and I have not met the criteria to

:42:39. > :42:42.be chosen out right, but going as a domestique, is not so bad. That is

:42:42. > :42:46.what this race is what the selectors are looking at, who would

:42:46. > :42:51.be good to help Helen in the Olympics. The why would British

:42:51. > :42:55.triathlon embrace this idea of having a domestique so much? A lot

:42:55. > :43:01.of money has been put into UK Sports to help us succeed and get

:43:02. > :43:07.medals. By putting a domestique in, we enhance the chances of our guys

:43:07. > :43:14.to have shown they can get medals, to actually win medals. One of the

:43:14. > :43:19.Brits in Madrid this weekend is a Abbey, who is a one of the

:43:19. > :43:22.strongest winners, would she make a good domestique? She is one of the

:43:23. > :43:29.people selectors will be looking at. She is one of the strongest

:43:29. > :43:37.swimmers in the sport and she will make the fun packs. She is a strong

:43:37. > :43:43.cyclist. In her own right as a trap first, she is not so strong running.

:43:43. > :43:49.But she is ranked inside the top 140 and we have been working with

:43:49. > :43:54.her. You sound like perfect domestique material? I hope so, but

:43:54. > :43:58.you don't know what the selectors are thinking and what the criteria

:43:58. > :44:04.is Farrah domestique. They have a lot of thinking to do be be --

:44:04. > :44:10.between now and when they announce the team. There is the possibility

:44:10. > :44:15.day could choose two, so you have to show what you can do on the day.

:44:15. > :44:21.I would like to think if I stick to my race plan, have a good swim,

:44:21. > :44:26.hard by can get a group a way, that would play into the domestique role

:44:26. > :44:30.anyway. Difficult decisions and fine margins to be made. Let's see

:44:30. > :44:40.which of the British women can cope with the pressure of one last shot

:44:40. > :44:57.

:44:57. > :45:04.of impressing the selectors. Back Madrid event, already assured of

:45:04. > :45:09.her place in Hyde Park on August 4th. But, we have a decent field. A

:45:09. > :45:13.total of 66 lined up across the pontoons. Andrea Hewitt is No 1

:45:13. > :45:23.from New Zealand, who was third in the first event this season in

:45:23. > :45:35.

:45:35. > :45:43.Jan 10, 10 deep. -- jammed end. The early pace, coming from Andrea

:45:43. > :45:49.Hewitt. 16 alongside tour, Liz Blatchford from Great Britain. That

:45:49. > :45:56.is an encouraging start. -- No. 16, alongside her. This is an

:45:56. > :46:02.interesting start for the British girls. There are still two slots

:46:02. > :46:06.available. Vicky Holland, I guess, in the driving seat at the moment,

:46:06. > :46:11.and Liz Blatchford is there alongside Jodie Stimpson, part of

:46:11. > :46:16.the gold medal-winning team in the championship relay. Abbey

:46:16. > :46:21.Thorington, swimming very well. Again, the strategy from the

:46:21. > :46:27.British selectors, who do they pack? Somebody with a chance of a

:46:27. > :46:34.medal? And if this does not apply, he would be the best to work with

:46:34. > :46:39.Helen? Huge numbers of summers jamming together as they make that

:46:39. > :46:44.first left hand turn, the first seven have got pretty clean water

:46:44. > :46:50.at the front, the others are scrambling around in the wake and

:46:50. > :47:00.the wash from the athletes that have gone before them. Heading back

:47:00. > :47:02.

:47:03. > :47:11.towards the pontoon. Number 65. From Spain. There will be a huge

:47:11. > :47:17.welcome for her. Trying to pick at some of the others. Abbey

:47:17. > :47:23.Thorington, for Great Britain, making a very positive start. 40 K

:47:23. > :47:28.on the bike. And that 10 kilometre run. And we swam alongside Abbey

:47:28. > :47:34.Thorington, leading them through. The others quite well stretched

:47:34. > :47:39.across the water. Quite an exciting start. She could be the one making

:47:39. > :47:42.that last gasp effort to make the selectors take notice. She is

:47:43. > :47:46.clearly determined to be one of the first out of the water, heading

:47:46. > :47:53.towards the transition at the end of the second lap to pick up her

:47:53. > :48:01.back. Others have got caught up in the melee behind her. Including,

:48:01. > :48:06.Hewitt, number one. 900 because to go. Approaching the ramp. Coming

:48:06. > :48:16.out of the water. Abbey Thorington, first to re enter the lake.

:48:16. > :48:18.

:48:18. > :48:23.looks very spare. Very effective, slow strokes. Looks behind her. For

:48:23. > :48:27.the British girls, there is really nothing to lose. That was the goods

:48:27. > :48:35.when from Vicky Holland. Very good. Putting her marked down nice and

:48:35. > :48:40.early. Caroline, 10th position. Not a bad start for all of the British

:48:40. > :48:45.athletes. Liz Blatchford was not far behind. Look how well spread

:48:46. > :48:54.out they are. Back to the front. Let us see family Thorington, No.

:48:54. > :49:03.64. Starting to see that Pearce. -- starting to feel the pace.

:49:03. > :49:08.looks to be in control. Looking over at each other. There is no

:49:08. > :49:17.panic, she is very comfortable. She is turning smoothly. She did

:49:17. > :49:22.exactly what the boy was. -- she knew exactly when that was. That

:49:22. > :49:25.will give her some free space in transition. Nothing to lose for the

:49:25. > :49:30.British girls, it is totally open at the moment and they have

:49:30. > :49:38.everything to go for. Put yourself on the line and you might make that

:49:38. > :49:45.Olympic Games slot. The second lap. Look at how dangerous it can be in

:49:45. > :49:51.there. The swimming hats get pulled off, the goggles get discarded.

:49:51. > :49:57.Injuries are a regular. As we watch from on high, deeper into the

:49:57. > :50:01.second lap on the water. That overhead shot, you can see how slow

:50:01. > :50:11.and controlled Abbey Thorington is. She knows exactly what she is doing,

:50:11. > :50:15.

:50:15. > :50:20.she has got clean water. This is what they knock the goggles.

:50:20. > :50:25.Conditions have been wonderful this weekend, barely a breath of wind

:50:25. > :50:32.and warm water and blue skies. Madrid has provided perfect

:50:32. > :50:40.facilities. One of the accolades, a British try applet, Abbey

:50:40. > :50:46.Thorington, first out of the water, Holland is right in there. Liz

:50:46. > :50:51.Blatchford has been up a few places. Six players. Making that late

:50:51. > :50:57.attempt to get Olympic selection. That is a very positive start as

:50:58. > :51:06.they come through. With five British athletes in the top 20, let

:51:06. > :51:11.us hear from Mark Pearce, with Sonali... As predicted, Abbey was

:51:11. > :51:17.first out of the water? Exactly as planned, she stumbled and she got

:51:17. > :51:21.up. With the other Brits, they had a very strong opportunity to put

:51:21. > :51:26.that quick transition under their belt, very hard on to the bike and

:51:26. > :51:31.away they go. What is a race plan? They will try to drive at the front

:51:31. > :51:35.of the race as hard as possible. We are seeing lots of other girls

:51:35. > :51:40.getting left behind, they have to create as many caps as possible

:51:40. > :51:45.really early. Vicky and Elizabeth need to make sure that they get on

:51:45. > :51:48.to that first could? This is their opportunity, the perfect

:51:48. > :51:53.opportunity to take this race on and do everything they can. If they

:51:53. > :52:00.can get to the front, they can control this. The transition, the

:52:00. > :52:04.Vicky Holland. Arriving at your bike. Others have already found

:52:04. > :52:07.their way into the saddle and they are making their way out of

:52:07. > :52:16.transition. She needs to be with that front group. We will get an

:52:16. > :52:24.update with her progress as soon as we can. Andrea Hewitt. She has a

:52:24. > :52:29.chance to close the gap. The new numbers, around 25. Around 20

:52:29. > :52:33.seconds behind, coming out of transition. This will be a big

:52:33. > :52:36.drive, as we saw with the men's race, very tough course and that

:52:36. > :52:46.will take a lot of aggression to close that gap. There is a single

:52:46. > :52:48.

:52:48. > :52:54.writer trying to close down. Chess Group, 52, from Switzerland,

:52:54. > :52:59.they will head back and join the leaders. Svenja Bazlen, from

:52:59. > :53:04.Germany, taking her turn at the front. Liz Blatchford, out of the

:53:04. > :53:09.saddle, putting in the work. She is that the chase group. Trying to

:53:09. > :53:15.close the gap but is she getting left behind? It looked as if she

:53:15. > :53:20.was very -- working very hard to get back. Absolutely crucial that

:53:20. > :53:24.she does get back on to that because to ride this caused by

:53:24. > :53:28.yourself is just making more hard work. Jodie Stimpson looking very

:53:28. > :53:38.comfortable at the front of that group. She seems to be holding her

:53:38. > :53:41.

:53:41. > :53:49.place. No. 8. Second in the World Championships. Nicola Spirig. She

:53:49. > :53:57.won the London test event in 2009. And she won this event in 2010. 30

:53:57. > :54:05.years of age. Caroline is out of the race. And what a shame. We are

:54:05. > :54:10.not sure why, but her race is at an end. The leading group. On the hill.

:54:10. > :54:14.Looking for a chance to break away, possibly. There might be some

:54:14. > :54:24.chatter among the first five. Plotting an opportunity to break

:54:24. > :54:25.

:54:25. > :54:28.away. Svenja Bazlen, taking her turn at the front. Jodie Stimpson.

:54:28. > :54:38.Alongside, the Vicky Holland. Both British athletes working on the

:54:38. > :54:39.

:54:39. > :54:49.bikes. And that is one of the Swiss. That is Nicola Spirig. Taking her

:54:49. > :54:53.

:54:53. > :54:58.turn. She has injected extra pace into the 40 K back leg. -- bike leg.

:54:58. > :55:01.Over one minute between the leading group and the chess club. It seems

:55:01. > :55:06.that the Richhill Chess Group will close that gap and they have got

:55:06. > :55:12.back on an established a very big lead group. Around 30 applets. They

:55:12. > :55:22.have over one net. One minute, is that too much time to catch up with

:55:22. > :55:23.

:55:23. > :55:28.half of the bikes to go? Sounds like a lot. Especially in this heat.

:55:28. > :55:33.Jodie Stimpson from Great Britain, clearly on a mission. She knows it

:55:33. > :55:41.is now or never. In her quest for Olympic selection. That look of

:55:41. > :55:45.absolute determination on her face. Fully concentrating on this. It is

:55:45. > :55:48.such a tough call for the British athletes. Vicky Holland was out of

:55:48. > :55:54.form for some time last year and Jodie Stimpson won the gold medal

:55:54. > :56:04.as part of the British team on the relay. We have another one out.

:56:04. > :56:06.

:56:06. > :56:14.Thorington. She was so important in the summing. Such a shame. As is

:56:14. > :56:23.the race over for Lauren Campbell. Now, we have an opportunity to go

:56:23. > :56:28.down to the transition and get the thoughts of my peers. -- Mark

:56:28. > :56:32.Pearce. Jodie has been pushing the pace. She has been trying to were

:56:32. > :56:35.the others down. Vicky Holland is holding her position well. They

:56:35. > :56:42.will keep trying to keep the pressure on and take the sting out

:56:42. > :56:50.of the robbers legs. -- runners. This is a great opportunity for

:56:50. > :56:53.them to take this Olympics locked. -- Olympic slot. We heard that

:56:53. > :57:03.Abbey Thorington had a puncture and tried to use a spare wheel that was

:57:03. > :57:08.

:57:08. > :57:14.not ideally set up for her bike. Leading the way. The distance is

:57:14. > :57:22.18.6 kilometres. They are over half-way on a bike. 19.2 for the

:57:22. > :57:27.chasers. Back with the lead group. It seems like nobody is pushing at

:57:27. > :57:31.all. They have almost backed off, very different from the earlier

:57:31. > :57:38.pace with people trying to tackle from the fund. Liz Blatchford at

:57:38. > :57:43.the front. This is the chase back. Anne Haug, she is a very strong

:57:43. > :57:47.runner but she will not be able to use that unless she bridges the gap.

:57:47. > :57:52.1.9 seconds, from the last information. She seems determined

:57:52. > :57:56.to try to bridge that gap. The pace from the chase good, so much more

:57:56. > :58:02.obvious than it was from the leaders. There Israel urgency

:58:02. > :58:07.within this group. To try to close the gap and get involved. Many

:58:07. > :58:11.other nations, not just the British team, this is a last chance for

:58:11. > :58:19.Olympic selection. It will be made on the basis of the results in

:58:19. > :58:27.Madrid. It is to part. To get as many slots for a country but also

:58:27. > :58:32.to impress her country's selectors. Jackson from Australia at the back.

:58:32. > :58:39.Jodie Stimpson, once again. We have not seen her too far away from the

:58:39. > :58:43.front. Harrison, representing France. Quite a solid pace but

:58:43. > :58:47.there does not seem to be anything exciting at the front. The time

:58:47. > :58:54.difference between leaders and chasers is down to around 35

:58:54. > :59:01.seconds, it will not be long before they closed the gap and form one

:59:01. > :59:11.huge group at the front. They are ending lap No. 6, 2 laps to go.

:59:11. > :59:19.

:59:19. > :59:28.Jodie Stimpson. Then Nicola Spirig. Barbara Riveros Diaz. Vanessa Raw

:59:28. > :59:32.is in there, from Great Britain. The Vicky Holland. She is in the

:59:32. > :59:37.next. Officially just four seconds. She is part of the leading group

:59:37. > :59:44.and in the hunt for a potential podium finish. Liz Blatchford is

:59:44. > :59:54.down with the chasing group. With a couple of laps through the park to

:59:54. > :00:06.

:00:06. > :00:16.in two laughs. -- laps. We will be able to see what's Anne Haug is

:00:16. > :00:21.

:00:21. > :00:29.capable of on the run. There is the gap now. We can see it from the

:00:29. > :00:33.helicopter. It is closing by the second. Really good work by others

:00:33. > :00:38.in the second group to push the pace and bridge the gap. The two

:00:38. > :00:45.groups will shortly become one. That is the distance now. Next to

:00:45. > :00:49.nothing. Big effort by Anne Haug at the front. She is the one that

:00:49. > :00:54.wants to give herself a chance to represent Germany at the Olympic

:00:54. > :01:00.Games. Daniela reef always willing to accept a challenge to go back

:01:00. > :01:03.through it. These two groups are coming together. Anne Haug of

:01:03. > :01:10.Germany who did a huge amount of the work within the chasing group

:01:10. > :01:13.to close the gap has had two good results so far. 7th in Sydney, 7th

:01:13. > :01:18.in San Diego. She has never been near the front at the end of the

:01:18. > :01:22.bike. Today she will be in the front group and has a chance of

:01:22. > :01:31.giving herself a last-gasp effort of giving herself a Olympic

:01:31. > :01:39.selection. Come much will this take it out of their legs? Or is it pure

:01:39. > :01:49.a gen -- adrenalin? Jodie Stimpson making a big effort at the front.

:01:49. > :01:54.

:01:54. > :02:04.Jodie Stimpson leads the way. Also, Vicky Holland, Vanessa Raw and Liz

:02:04. > :02:05.

:02:05. > :02:12.to keep out of trouble. A big group like this there is always a danger

:02:12. > :02:21.there will be a collision. It is less likely because it is a drive

:02:21. > :02:28.days -- dry day. Off the saddles, into the run and looking for a

:02:28. > :02:37.clean, fast transition to get an opening pace on the run. Vicky

:02:37. > :02:40.Holland, Jodie Stimpson coming through in 8th officially. No. Two

:02:40. > :02:47.is an Hogg who did all the hard work on the bike for start she has

:02:47. > :02:54.hung up a bike and looking for the exit door. Bar brother of Eros and

:02:54. > :03:02.Diaz of Chile has struck at the front of the field in red and white.

:03:02. > :03:06.So much at stake, so many athletes with a chance. Barbara has been a

:03:06. > :03:11.bit down lately, she split from her coach and does not have a coach.

:03:11. > :03:17.And Jodie Stimpson looking very strong. Aileen Morrison from

:03:18. > :03:27.Ireland is there. Fingers crossed, a really hard worker. Just saw a

:03:28. > :03:29.

:03:29. > :03:35.shot of Vanessa Raw in pretty good shape bus-stop Nicola Spirig from

:03:35. > :03:40.Sweden -- Switzerland is in with a chance. Vanessa Raw is looking like

:03:40. > :03:50.she might be struggling slightly at the back of this pack. Nicola

:03:50. > :04:00.

:04:00. > :04:07.Spirig is out in front. Barbara already. Nicky spirit is so strong.

:04:07. > :04:13.-- Nicola Spirig. Jodie Stimpson and looking comfortable at the

:04:13. > :04:18.moment alongside Emma Jackson from Australia. Jessica Harrison, since

:04:18. > :04:24.she left Great Britain has developed into such a good,

:04:24. > :04:31.consistent athlete and does really well for France. The 29 year old

:04:31. > :04:36.from Munich, and Hogg is alongside Nicola Spirig. Nicola Spirig is a

:04:36. > :04:42.qualified lawyer. On the right, in the green for the Republic of

:04:42. > :04:47.Ireland, Aileen Morrison, having the best race of her career so far.

:04:47. > :04:54.Vicky Holland is what the front group as well. Well-positioned in

:04:54. > :04:58.about 6th position at this stage with a fine opportunity. Liz

:04:58. > :05:04.Blatchford is slightly further back and Jodie Stimpson just behind her.

:05:04. > :05:10.An interesting start to the run stage as Holland starts to get

:05:10. > :05:13.dropped. She is in 7th on her own. Lots of development and lots going

:05:13. > :05:17.on and what does Mark Pearce and making it all?

:05:17. > :05:24.Mickey has done an excellent job, she has swam really well and staked

:05:24. > :05:28.a claim, whether in her own right off as a domestique. Jodie look

:05:28. > :05:38.like she was riding really strong but she was further back in the

:05:38. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:46.swim. They have all given the selectors a headache. I am sure it

:05:46. > :05:51.is a headache they will deal with. Ainhoa Murua from Spain is

:05:51. > :06:01.struggling to keep pace with the leaders. Vicky Holland might be

:06:01. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:15.able to make up a place by overtaking Ainhoa Murua. Rachel

:06:15. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:22.Klamer of the Netherlands. Rachel Klamer has found an extra kick,

:06:22. > :06:29.which is a good recovery. Rachel Klamer is a youngster in this. The

:06:29. > :06:34.Vicky Holland has not given up. Now she has got the athlete in front,

:06:34. > :06:44.she will have her eyes peeled and that. Maurice and making her

:06:44. > :06:45.

:06:45. > :06:49.intentions clear. Rachel Klamer 1 not give in. Barbara Diaz, her

:06:49. > :06:56.first distance race for a few months, has shown she has not lost

:06:56. > :07:01.anything by that. They are giving 100%. Jodie Stimpson just on the

:07:01. > :07:06.shoulder of Jessica Harrison. Andrea Hewitt is some way off the

:07:06. > :07:14.pace. Rachel Klamer of the Netherlands wearing No. 6 is off

:07:14. > :07:19.the pace of this group, led by in Nicola Spirig. Barbara Diaz in

:07:19. > :07:23.second. In third place is Aileen Morrison of the Republic of Ireland.

:07:23. > :07:29.Anne Haug of Germany is 4th. It looks like the three podium places

:07:29. > :07:34.will be between these four, and Nicola Spirig is moving things up.

:07:34. > :07:40.She is applying the pressure and has some daylight. A good kick from

:07:40. > :07:45.Nicola Spirig. The whole pace is hotting up. When they made their

:07:45. > :07:51.move, Nicola Spirig really put the hammer down. Rachel Klamer not able

:07:51. > :07:57.to stay with the lead. A statement of intense early on. Aileen

:07:57. > :08:01.Morrison is not content to let it go. She is working hard. Nicola

:08:01. > :08:07.Spirig has moved into a sprint. She can taste victory in Madrid. The

:08:07. > :08:12.battle goes on behind her for second and third between Morrison

:08:12. > :08:16.and Barbara Diaz. Nicola Spirig heads for home. She can see the

:08:16. > :08:20.finishing line and she will win for Switzerland. Nicola Spirig wins in

:08:20. > :08:26.Madrid, a fantastic second place for Aileen Morrison for the

:08:26. > :08:30.Republic of Ireland with Barbour Diaz in third and Anne Haug, saved

:08:31. > :08:36.enough after all the work on the bike to come home in 4th. Eight

:08:36. > :08:39.seconds off the pace. It will be Rachel Klamer are the Netherlands

:08:39. > :08:47.next is finish. What an exciting end to the elite women's race in

:08:47. > :08:51.Madrid. With the five athletes finished, the interest and

:08:51. > :08:56.excitement turns to Vicky Holland. There is Vicky Holland, has she

:08:56. > :09:00.done enough? She is the first British finisher and that could be

:09:00. > :09:06.the crucial element in making the Great Britain team for the Olympics

:09:06. > :09:11.this year. Two fine results from Vicky Holland, 5th in San Diego,

:09:11. > :09:17.7th in Madrid. Surely she has done enough to give herself the chance

:09:17. > :09:21.of getting selected for the Olympic Games? But a win in Madrid it went

:09:21. > :09:26.to Nicola Spirig, the former junior world champion, the current

:09:26. > :09:29.European champion having a storming run in the world Championship

:09:29. > :09:39.series event in Madrid, beating Aileen Morrison by three seconds.

:09:39. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:53.Barbara tear gas -- Barbara Degas It is amazing. I wonder Barr years

:09:53. > :09:59.ago. It is a great day for me. must be feeling confident ahead of

:09:59. > :10:03.London 2012? Training is going very well and I am very happy. Hope it

:10:03. > :10:09.is going like that until the Olympics. I found myself in a good

:10:09. > :10:13.position. I slowly made my well -- way to the front in the run. It was

:10:13. > :10:18.an awful cycle. I was surprised to be able to get off the bike and

:10:18. > :10:23.move my legs. When I found myself at the front at the end of the

:10:23. > :10:28.second lap, I thought it was nice and steady, push on as best as a

:10:28. > :10:35.good. I could not get any closer than that. Even a sprint finish

:10:35. > :10:39.involved, I could not have finished any higher, I am ecstatic. Turns is

:10:39. > :10:44.not bad at all, but I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to pull

:10:44. > :10:51.out of the race. It was such a strange day for me. I was telling

:10:51. > :10:55.myself not to stop. 10th was good, considering. Every one is talking

:10:55. > :11:00.about a Olympic selection, where are you in that process? Do you

:11:00. > :11:06.think you impress the selectors today? I gave it my best shot, but

:11:06. > :11:10.a hand on heart, I think Vicky has done enough. I think she deserves

:11:11. > :11:15.to go alongside with talent. She pulled out another great

:11:15. > :11:21.performance, you cannot put her down. Then there is the third slot,

:11:21. > :11:26.who knows. Do you think you have done enough? The million dollar

:11:26. > :11:32.question. I hope so. I was closer to the front, and I have shown

:11:32. > :11:38.improvement. I was tactically aware, so I hope that has helped a my case.

:11:38. > :11:43.My Alcombe, in the women's race you had two women, Liz Blatchford and

:11:43. > :11:50.Vicky Holland, top 10, could they have done any more? They were both

:11:50. > :11:56.outstanding and gave everything. They will always hoped a slightly

:11:56. > :12:00.better, athletes always do. I was proud of them. I was also proud of

:12:00. > :12:05.everybody else. Tim Don was going for a podium and did not get

:12:05. > :12:09.anywhere near. Will Clarke thinks he has shown you guys he can be a

:12:09. > :12:13.domestique. Is that an option you will go down? We have a lot of

:12:13. > :12:18.evidence to look at, we have 18 months of evidence. All of those

:12:18. > :12:24.races. Race performances are important but there is other

:12:24. > :12:29.material as well. It is premature to say yes or no. Johnny got his

:12:29. > :12:35.second gold medal of the season, he was a wowing the crowds. He must

:12:35. > :12:45.have wow due this weekend? I was in the backwoods, so I did not see the

:12:45. > :12:45.

:12:45. > :12:50.finish. I could see him running and he ran very well. I think the San

:12:50. > :12:54.Diego race a couple of months ago has helped him move forward. Johnny

:12:54. > :12:59.makes it two out of two with another gold medal. As for the

:12:59. > :13:05.other Brits, they have swum, cycled and run as hard as they can. There

:13:05. > :13:09.is nothing more they can do is. It is up to selectors to find out who
