:00:28. > :00:32.Welcome to Wilmslow. It's full of athletes taking part in the 7th

:00:32. > :00:38.triathlon. For this round we have travelled here to Cheshire to look

:00:38. > :00:41.at the growth of the sport at grass roots level.

:00:41. > :00:48.This summer there will be an average of six triathlons taking

:00:48. > :00:52.place every weekend across the country. In 2012 there was a total

:00:52. > :00:57.of 856 triathlon events in the UK and that number is set to grow this

:00:57. > :01:02.year. Since 2004, British trialt London membership has grown from

:01:02. > :01:06.6,500 to more than 15,000 and the range of people taking part is

:01:06. > :01:10.becoming more and more diverse. In Wilmslow today we have

:01:10. > :01:15.participants who take the sport so seriously they'll be aiming to get

:01:15. > :01:18.enough points to compete in the age group races at the ITU grand final

:01:18. > :01:22.in Hyde Park in September. On the same course we will also see people

:01:22. > :01:26.of all shapes and sizes with little or no triathlon experience, all

:01:26. > :01:29.here with the aim of reaching their own individual goals. Later in the

:01:29. > :01:33.programme we will be speaking to a couple of today's competitors,

:01:33. > :01:36.asking them how taking up up triathlon has changed their lives

:01:36. > :01:41.and we will be letting you know what to do if you fancy a go, as

:01:41. > :01:46.well. For now, let's turn our attentions

:01:46. > :01:51.back to the sport's elite level and more specifically, round three of

:01:51. > :01:57.the series which has been taking place this this weekend in the

:01:57. > :02:07.Japanese city of Yokohama. We are going to start focusing on the

:02:07. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:24.men's race. The leaderboard looks from Richard Murray, who was second

:02:24. > :02:28.in San Diego and is currently 7th in the rankings. Perhaps the man he'll

:02:28. > :02:38.fear more in Gomez. A late entry fear more in Gomez. A late entry

:02:38. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:49.his storming victory in his series debut placed him sixth in the

:02:49. > :02:56.rankings. Alistair chose to stay in California and compete in a 10 K

:02:56. > :03:04.track race. Having clocked an impressive 23.32 he is back on

:03:04. > :03:07.British soil explaining why he The last four years for mee were all

:03:07. > :03:11.about that one race in London. Fair enough. You only get one chance to

:03:11. > :03:20.raise at the Olympics. But to keep going for another four year, the

:03:20. > :03:27.same would be pretty tough. To mixing up with 10 K and other races

:03:27. > :03:31.and hoping to keep it fresh. It was great doing a 10K. With the

:03:31. > :03:35.triathlon, you pack your bags, you have three drinks bottles, three

:03:35. > :03:40.pairs of shoes, different clothing. It was the best thing just to throw

:03:40. > :03:44.your spikes and a vest in the bag and go down the track. I obviously

:03:44. > :03:48.talked about trying to qualify for the common wealths. I don't know how

:03:48. > :03:51.possible it is. I'm enjoying it and using it as a different goal to

:03:51. > :03:56.train for and running as fast as I can.

:03:56. > :04:01.It would be good but I wouldn't see him for very long.

:04:01. > :04:06.While all that has been going on, Johnny Brownlee has been continuing

:04:06. > :04:10.his training getting ready for his delayed start to the season. He has

:04:10. > :04:15.fully recovered from the Aingle injuries that blighted his

:04:15. > :04:20.winter training. -- ankle injuries. With Alistair winning he is hoping

:04:20. > :04:23.to make it back-to-back Brownlee wins.

:04:23. > :04:31.Let's see how they are getting on with their training.

:04:31. > :04:36.The men are getting ready to race at Yokohama. A grey and damp day in

:04:36. > :04:42.Japan's second largest city. You can see some of the taller buildings

:04:43. > :04:46.obscured by the clouds. So it should make for an interesting race. This

:04:46. > :04:50.is the story so far in terms of where they've been. It was Auckland

:04:50. > :05:00.where it ended last season, where they began this season. Soon desay

:05:00. > :05:07.goe in the sunshine of California saw stage two. -- Dan desay goe.

:05:07. > :05:17.-- San Dei go. We are now in Yokohama. They begin the bike leg to

:05:17. > :05:18.

:05:18. > :05:22.complete 40 kilometres. They'll ride 94. .45K laps, taking them to

:05:22. > :05:30.various key areas of the Yokohama water front. Back into transition

:05:30. > :05:36.for the changeover, then we'll have four 2. 5K laps on foot to complete

:05:36. > :05:41.the race. That's how it'll end, back in transition in about an hour and

:05:41. > :05:44.50 minutes from where they start. So it is the defending Yokohama

:05:45. > :05:47.triathlon champion who wears number one as the leader in the rankings.

:05:47. > :05:57.He is first to step on to the blue He is first to step on to the blue

:05:57. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:09.whiches in Yokohama. He likes this course. -- three wins.

:06:09. > :06:15.David McNamee wears nine for Great Britain. The big news is the return

:06:15. > :06:20.of Jonathan browly following his ankle injury -- Jonathan Brownlee.

:06:20. > :06:26.He hasn't competed since the end of last season. He wears 19. There he

:06:26. > :06:31.is the Olympic bronze medallist. It was Alistair's turn to shine is San

:06:31. > :06:37.Diego. Johnny is welcomed with a roar as he steps on to the carpet in

:06:37. > :06:42.yolk what Mc. Described by -- yolk what Mc. Described by his brother a

:06:42. > :06:47.as being the fittest man in the world. The men released into the

:06:47. > :06:52.water. A spectacular start. Two laps. Oh, somebody has taken a knock

:06:52. > :07:02.and got left behind. A blilt of argy bargy in the early stages of the

:07:02. > :07:08.

:07:08. > :07:11.swim. -- a little bit. They swim out swim. -- a little bit. They swim out

:07:11. > :07:16.across the port of Yokohama. The water temperature enforcing the use

:07:16. > :07:24.of wetsuits at 17. 3 degrees. A chilly, rather unwelcoming weather

:07:24. > :07:27.situation here in Yokohama, but a huge day for the sport as we see the

:07:27. > :07:31.return of Jonathan Brownlee. Difficult conditions.

:07:31. > :07:35.Well, they certainly are. They are very different to what they saw here

:07:36. > :07:39.last year. In around about September time the water temperature was up in

:07:39. > :07:43.the 20s. Certainly the outside temperature was a lot warmer. The

:07:43. > :07:50.roads are going to be wet and slippery. We have seen the swim. It

:07:50. > :07:56.is a wetsuit swim. That changes the race a little bit. It benefits the

:07:56. > :08:03.slightly slower swumers. Not that any of these guys are slow. A few

:08:03. > :08:09.missing. Richard Varger who we normally see isn't there. We'll see

:08:09. > :08:14.the Russians leading the race, I think. Igor Polyanskiy and of course

:08:14. > :08:19.Gomez and let's not forget Johnny Brownlee as you said earlier was

:08:19. > :08:26.said to be in the shape of his life by his brother, Alistair. There is

:08:26. > :08:31.the Olympic bronze medallist and defending WTS champion. The younger

:08:31. > :08:36.of the Brownlee brothers, Jonathan. He had that in incredible brobs

:08:36. > :08:42.medal in -- bronze medal in Hyde Park on August 7th 2012, despite

:08:42. > :08:47.being forced to stop and take a 15-second count because of a

:08:47. > :08:51.dismount infringement. We never saw a replay of that, in fact. It was a

:08:51. > :08:54.little controversial. I remember Alistair and Jonathan, as we see the

:08:54. > :08:58.start again, Alistair and Jonathan discussing, or trying to discuss

:08:58. > :09:03.what happened as they were on the bike but the noise levels from the

:09:03. > :09:10.crowd were so great they couldn't hear each other speaking, such was

:09:11. > :09:13.the interaction with the huge crowds the interaction with the huge crowds

:09:13. > :09:23.in Hyde Park last August. A good start for Johnny Brownlee off the

:09:23. > :09:27.pontoon. This is the first turn with Ivan Vasiliev and Jonathan Brownlee

:09:28. > :09:35.in hot pursuit. -- Denis Vasiliev. There was an arm on a shoulder there

:09:35. > :09:45.with ducking and diving going on. Eight minutes and five seconds have

:09:45. > :09:48.

:09:48. > :09:53.passed. The lead remains with the Russian, Denis Vasiliev. His brother

:09:53. > :09:58.wouldn't be too far behind. They have to head for this ramp which is

:09:58. > :10:02.semi-submerged in the water off Yokohama. Crawl out, then run along

:10:02. > :10:06.the platform and dive back in. We'll get a full check on the standings at

:10:06. > :10:14.the end of lap one. It is Vasiliev first out of the water. Followed by

:10:14. > :10:19.Johnny Brownlee. Then his brother Ivan. Henri Schoeman is fourth.

:10:19. > :10:29.Ivan. Henri Schoeman is fourth. McCartney. Still still. Tayama is

:10:29. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:43.McCartney. Still still. Tayama is Harris comes out in 19. David

:10:43. > :10:48.McNamee is out on 23. Richard Murray off the pace. Slower than he would

:10:48. > :10:52.have preferred in the early stages. Back they go. Keeping an eye on the

:10:52. > :10:56.flags coming through. Mark flags coming through. Mark

:10:56. > :11:05.Buckingham out in 40 seconds. 36th Buckingham out in 40 seconds. 36th

:11:05. > :11:09.position for Mark. They are on their position for Mark. They are on their

:11:09. > :11:13.way. We have a change in leadership at the front. Number 34, Andrew

:11:13. > :11:19.McCartney from Canada has taken up McCartney from Canada has taken up

:11:19. > :11:24.first position in the water. He will arrive stirs at the white -- arrive

:11:24. > :11:29.first at the white burning buoy. McCartney of Canada, followed by

:11:29. > :11:36.Vasiliev. Followed by Johnny Brownlee, who I think is joined by

:11:36. > :11:39.the other of the Vasiliev brothers, Ivan. They are in close proximity to

:11:39. > :11:44.Jonathan Brownlee. Again more trouble for some of the insiders as

:11:44. > :11:51.they come tight on this turn. The bikes are poised and ready to

:11:51. > :11:55.go. There is Johnny Brownlee's bike with feeding stations stuck to the

:11:55. > :12:01.handlebars and crossbar and the rain falling steadily now on the water as

:12:01. > :12:10.the swimmers approach the final turn before they head to the pontoon for

:12:11. > :12:14.the second exit. This time they'll the second exit. This time they'll

:12:15. > :12:18.head for their bikes. It's been an excellent swim from the Canadian

:12:18. > :12:23.Andrew McCartney. He made an excellent exit and reentry after the

:12:23. > :12:28.first lap. He found himself in first position. He has held on to first

:12:28. > :12:32.position, keeping Denis Vasiliev down in second. Good swimming

:12:32. > :12:35.technique for McCartney. He will be first to the sloping pontoon which

:12:35. > :12:40.takes him out of the water. He will start it prepare ready for

:12:40. > :12:44.transition. He is on his way. McCartney first, Vasiliev in second.

:12:44. > :12:50.Coming out in third is Jonathan Coming out in third is Jonathan

:12:50. > :12:56.Brownlee. Number 19. #2308d by Schoeman, the South African. --

:12:56. > :13:03.followed by. Vasiliev, and Silva. Marco Van Der

:13:03. > :13:13.Stel. Gomez is not far behind. Coming out in 11th. Adam Bowden is

:13:13. > :13:33.

:13:33. > :13:39.emerge -- potentially a group of 20 could emerge, depending on how they

:13:39. > :13:44.go into this transition area. Johnny Brownlee has arrived. Fiddles with

:13:44. > :13:49.that. Make sure the clip is done up and wetsuit deposited into the box.

:13:49. > :13:53.First man out was the first man in. McCartney leaves first. Johnny

:13:53. > :13:59.Brownlee is there, crosses the line before he gets on his bike and away

:13:59. > :14:04.they go to begin the first of nine 4.45 kilometre laps on the wet roads

:14:05. > :14:09.of Yokohama. It's going to be dangerous. It'll require full

:14:09. > :14:13.concentration. Everybody needs to keep their distance to avoid any

:14:13. > :14:16.incidents but we are likely to see them in such slippery road

:14:16. > :14:18.conditions. Mark Buckingham is on conditions. Mark Buckingham is on

:14:18. > :14:22.his way. Number 12 just going his way. Number 12 just going

:14:22. > :14:27.his way. Number 12 just going through. Igor Polyanskiy. And those

:14:27. > :14:30.who are just arriving, including Richard Murray, will be eager to

:14:30. > :14:36.exit quickly and keep in touch with this lead group. Murray glances up.

:14:36. > :14:40.He has a bit of work to do to catch the leaders. The second group is

:14:40. > :14:44.immediately forming behind him are just seeing Adam Bowden go

:14:44. > :14:47.through there. I think he had a bit of a bad transition. He really was

:14:47. > :14:52.just behind the front guys coming across the water. Another good swim

:14:52. > :14:56.from him following up from a good swim in San Diego but seems to have

:14:56. > :15:02.dropped off the pack. That's why it is important to come out and hammer

:15:02. > :15:06.the first kilometre. That's why the guys do. This is the front pack of

:15:06. > :15:10.riders coming through. You can see the damage that can be done early on

:15:10. > :15:15.in the race when someone is committed, the likes of Jonathan

:15:15. > :15:18.Brown lane Alistair Brownlee, they know how important it is to run out

:15:18. > :15:28.hard. People try to make the mistake of recovering from the swi. Go with

:15:28. > :15:45.

:15:46. > :15:51.that. You have to go with the pace in these conditions. One lap down.

:15:51. > :16:01.Eight laps to go. Adam Bowden is 22 seconds off the

:16:01. > :16:17.

:16:17. > :16:25.the field from Jonathan Brownlee. Look at him go. He wants to up the

:16:25. > :16:29.ante. Everybody else is forced to respond.

:16:29. > :16:34.Johnny is used to six months of training, he is coming to this with

:16:34. > :16:42.less training and come to this race late. He arrived two days before

:16:42. > :16:46.the event. And that's a different tactic to normally. There is a

:16:46. > :16:51.theory come in late or early. But at the moment doesn't seem to be

:16:51. > :16:55.affecting him, the fact he arrived in the country 48 hours ago.

:16:55. > :17:00.Adam Bowden, number four, right of screen. He takes it up with the

:17:00. > :17:07.chase group. The chase group I think think has

:17:07. > :17:10.now absorbed the two Russians boys. Instead of pushing to join leaders,

:17:10. > :17:20.they allowed themselves to be swallowed up by the chase group

:17:20. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:28.which now numbers six or seven. Oh! We have a man down. It's

:17:28. > :17:36.Polyanskiy. Took out one of the court Marshalls in the process. He

:17:36. > :17:40.is hurting. I think it was a relatively slow part of the course

:17:40. > :17:45.where Polyanskiy went down. He was making a turn. The paramedics are

:17:45. > :17:55.there to take care of him. No change at the front. Still eight

:17:55. > :18:07.

:18:07. > :18:10.guys. McCartney looks to be finding course. His left arm clearly

:18:11. > :18:16.damaged in some way. I don't know if it's superficial or whether he

:18:16. > :18:20.needs an X-ray. But his race is run. Javier Gomez takes his turn to

:18:20. > :18:25.force the pace and leads them through at the end of lap four.

:18:25. > :18:28.Five to go. There's the helicopter. I think it's probably remotely

:18:28. > :18:34.controlled from the ground. It's not big enough to carry a pilot and

:18:34. > :18:39.that gear underneath. The chase group aren't getting any closer.

:18:39. > :18:44.They're down to about 50 seconds behind the hraoetders now --

:18:44. > :18:52.leaders now. This is group number three coming

:18:52. > :19:02.through. Richard Murray in there.

:19:02. > :19:07.

:19:07. > :19:12.A minute and a half off the pace, Murray. Harris, as well. Silva

:19:12. > :19:21.hoping to extend lead today. He needs to watch Gomez, the

:19:21. > :19:26.mathematics of that to be decided. Gomez moves to the front. McCartney,

:19:26. > :19:32.where he's been since he left the water.

:19:32. > :19:38.8th position. Barely moved from 8th. A couple of minutes in 7th but he

:19:38. > :19:47.has been out the pack, the Canadian. White helmet of Jonathan Brownlee.

:19:47. > :19:53.At the end of lap 7, two to go. One minute and 18 seconds between the

:19:53. > :19:56.front group of eight and the chasers.

:19:57. > :20:02.The crowd still out in force, despite the rotten weather

:20:02. > :20:12.conditions. They were hoping for some Japanese success. That

:20:12. > :20:17.vanished long ago, the chance of a home win today. Gomez is there.

:20:17. > :20:27.Brownlee easy to spot. They'll take the bell here. It's at the end of

:20:27. > :20:28.

:20:28. > :20:32.lap 8. The bell will sound, signalling one further lap to ride.

:20:32. > :20:38.Next time they come to transition they'll dump the bikes and start

:20:38. > :20:43.the run. One to go. Jonathan Brownlee's return to top

:20:43. > :20:46.level competition has been exemplary, so far. Will it be a

:20:46. > :20:56.triumphant return to top level racing for the younger of the

:20:56. > :20:57.

:20:57. > :21:03.Brownlee brothers? It was a triumphant return for Alistair in

:21:03. > :21:08.San Diego. Jonathan will have to deal with Gomez, with the threat of

:21:08. > :21:12.Silva. Certainly knowing that Alistair won in San Diego, I think

:21:12. > :21:18.that's going to motivate him to think, if my brother can do it, I

:21:18. > :21:21.can do it, as well. The transition fast approaching. They've so much

:21:21. > :21:31.space between the leaders and the chase group. There's no danger of

:21:31. > :21:37.

:21:37. > :21:41.being caught. Preparations for the dismount in line now. Van Der Stel

:21:41. > :21:47.leads them in with Brownlee in second. Approaching the dismount

:21:47. > :21:53.line. They're spread out nicely across the road here in Yokohama.

:21:53. > :21:59.Touch down. Away we go. Brownlee moves seamlessly from

:21:59. > :22:07.riding to jogging into position to transition. Right shoe is on, left

:22:07. > :22:17.shoe is on. Gomez is set, as well. It's Shaw

:22:17. > :22:20.

:22:20. > :22:23.who leads them out. Silva, Gomez, Brownlee, McCartney Schoeman. They

:22:23. > :22:33.leave pretty much as a single group, that was well executed by all of

:22:33. > :22:45.

:22:45. > :22:49.them. What do they do here? Does Johnny take it out hard and go, I

:22:49. > :22:53.am here. And put the fear of God in them or does he sit in and see what

:22:53. > :23:01.they've got to offer him? second group have arrived at

:23:02. > :23:11.transition. Wilson first in and first out.

:23:12. > :23:12.

:23:12. > :23:20.That's a quick change by Wilson. Bailie and Good. Tayama the best of

:23:20. > :23:27.the Japanese. Out in front Brownlee with Gomez on his shoulder. Silva

:23:27. > :23:32.splashing through the puddles, holding on to third position.

:23:32. > :23:38.Shaw and Schoeman with no answer to the speed at the start of this

:23:38. > :23:48.first lap. An hour and 22 minutes so far for Jonathan at the end of

:23:48. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:10.the first lap.. One of the Japanese competitors still on his first lap.

:24:10. > :24:16.Johnny's kicked away from Gomez. He has opened up a gap of two or three

:24:16. > :24:20.metres. Around the hairpin, a wide turn

:24:20. > :24:26.from Brownlee. Further pace injected. The gap now a couple of

:24:26. > :24:29.seconds. I had a feeling Gomez was going with Brownlee for the first

:24:29. > :24:32.couple of kilometres and he was thinking, he will slow down. He

:24:32. > :24:38.can't keep this pace up. At three kilometres, he thought I can't stay

:24:38. > :24:47.with this pace and this guy isn't slowing down. Brownlee looks

:24:47. > :24:55.comfortable. Silva stays in third. Vasiliev has broken away and

:24:55. > :25:05.fancies a visit to the WTS podium. Silva's third place may be in

:25:05. > :25:15.danger. Now the gap has grown. Closer to five seconds between

:25:15. > :25:15.

:25:15. > :25:23.Brownlee and Gomez. They complete lap two of four. Silva looks like

:25:23. > :25:33.he is in real pain. Seven minutes and 11 seconds for

:25:33. > :25:56.

:25:56. > :26:02.last year's run time by Silva, which was 29.42. At the end of lap

:26:02. > :26:09.three Jonathan Brownlee is in command in Yokohama, just like his

:26:09. > :26:13.brother was in San Diego. The rain is getting heavier. He's

:26:13. > :26:17.been using the feeding station water to cool himself down. But

:26:17. > :26:22.mother nature will help him now over the final lap. Not looking as

:26:22. > :26:31.comfortable as he was ten minutes ago. But his lead over Gomez is

:26:31. > :26:40.significant. In the wet, murky distance, we can see Silva in third

:26:40. > :26:47.position. 12 seconds between Brownlee and Gomez. Two-and-a-half

:26:47. > :26:56.kilometres to go. Brownlee's taken the bell. Gomez takes it now.

:26:56. > :27:02.Shortly Silva will take it. Vasiliev I don't think has enough

:27:02. > :27:12.in the legs to close the gap and take third position. Holding on for

:27:12. > :27:15.

:27:15. > :27:25.4th, for the moment. 51 seconds between Jonathan in first and Silva

:27:25. > :27:43.

:27:43. > :27:48.behind, and now it's 15. Schoeman in 5th or 6th here, will get a full

:27:48. > :27:57.list of what they're doing. He is in 5th, followed by McCartney,

:27:57. > :28:00.who's holding on to 6th position. Shaw and Richard Murray is the man

:28:00. > :28:06.who's made up some ground. He was with the chasing group. He was a

:28:06. > :28:10.long way off the pace. He really hasn't let up, we thought he had

:28:10. > :28:20.gone out with that pace and was he going to blow up or slow down? But

:28:20. > :28:21.

:28:21. > :28:24.my eyes are telling me that this is pretty much the same pace as he

:28:25. > :28:28.went out with. I am going to be fascinated to see the run splits at

:28:28. > :28:30.the end of this race. This is going to be somewhere up with the similar

:28:30. > :28:33.times to what his brother is running right now. With plenty of

:28:33. > :28:38.races still to come he could still go on and successfully defend his

:28:38. > :28:43.WTS title, which he won in 2012. There's plenty of time for Jonathan

:28:43. > :28:53.to do that and on this sort of form who can stop him? Maybe only his

:28:53. > :28:57.

:28:57. > :29:04.brother. Jonathan Brownlee has demolished the field here in

:29:04. > :29:14.Yokohama, off the back of an injury. His first race of the season. His

:29:14. > :29:21.first Olympic distance triathlon of 2013 will end in triumph in

:29:21. > :29:29.Yokohama. No one to touch him here in Japan. In the driving rain, at

:29:29. > :29:39.last he can afford a smile. His fitness is not in doubt. Despite

:29:39. > :29:45.the lay-off with injury, he is in a class of his own here. On to the

:29:45. > :29:53.final strait now. It's Jonathan's turn to shine in

:29:53. > :30:00.Yokohama, following Alistair's demonstration in San Diego. Up the

:30:00. > :30:06.final stretch to take the applause and congratulations. What a win!

:30:06. > :30:16.The younger of the Brownlee brothers, Jonathan triumphant in

:30:16. > :30:16.

:30:16. > :30:25.Japan. He made it look so ridiculously easy. He will have a

:30:25. > :30:31.wait now as Gomez comes home. He will be about 20 seconds behind.

:30:31. > :30:35.Brownlee has beaten Gomez, that's a huge achievement for him. And last

:30:35. > :30:45.year's winner has improved on his winning time from a year ago, as

:30:45. > :30:51.

:30:51. > :30:56.well. Joao Silva looked in pain. He wondered if he would be caught by

:30:56. > :31:01.the Russian behind him but he held on to take third. It remains an

:31:01. > :31:07.excellent venue for Joao Silva. Twice a winner. And third today in

:31:07. > :31:08.2013 but a minute and 17 seconds 2013 but a minute and 17 seconds

:31:08. > :31:12.2013 but a minute and 17 seconds behind the winner. Ivan Vasiliev

:31:12. > :31:16.crosses the line it take fourth from Russia. It'll be interesting to see

:31:16. > :31:23.how far up the field Richard Murray finds himself. He will be next to

:31:23. > :31:28.finish, into fifth. Two South Africans. Schoeman overtaken in the

:31:28. > :31:36.final stages by Murray. That will hurt. Murray comes home in fifth for

:31:53. > :31:56.So an emphatic victory for Jonathan Brownlee by 24 seconds to Javier

:31:56. > :32:02.Gomez in second with Joao Silva Gomez in second with Joao Silva

:32:15. > :32:24.Joao Silva leads the series ranking Joao Silva leads the series ranking

:32:24. > :32:28.Brownlees are coming. I have only trained for two weeks at

:32:28. > :32:33.running. At the start of the year I got told I wouldn't be racing at

:32:33. > :32:37.all. I got a bit emotional. I thought I wasn't going to be here at

:32:37. > :32:41.all. I thought the season was over and now to be back, it is weird. I

:32:41. > :32:46.don't know where it came from but I felt pretty good. One of the big

:32:46. > :32:50.things is I've trained hard. Long miles were being young. So I have a

:32:50. > :32:55.base. If you have a rest it helps. That helped me. Javier has been

:32:55. > :33:00.travelling around the world. I have been at home in Yorkshire. I have an

:33:05. > :33:09.on the bike. I'm happy with my performance today, better than in

:33:09. > :33:15.San Diego. Not great but Jonathan was fast in the run. I tried to hang

:33:15. > :33:18.on in the first lap. I blew up. Second place is all right.

:33:18. > :33:22.beginning of the season for me has been a lot of travelling and maybe

:38:31. > :38:35.Yokohama Those waters look choppy to me. We saw the girls warming up

:38:40. > :38:46.It looks relatively flat. But when you are in there, it is not going to

:38:46. > :38:50.feel so flat. Just under a kilometre swim, deep in the first of the two

:38:50. > :38:54.laps here. That second grou, that second trio -- that second group,

:38:55. > :38:59.that second trio are making contact with just about every stroke. They

:38:59. > :39:04.could do with giving each other a bit of room. Otherwise somebody's

:39:04. > :39:09.googles will come off or somebody could get poked in the eye.

:39:09. > :39:13.Eventually someone getting sandwiched out of context as Aileen

:39:17. > :39:21.noticing there that little break and in the second pack behind I did see

:39:21. > :39:26.Maaike Caelers. She's not known for her swim, is she? She has been

:39:26. > :39:34.working on it all winter. We know her biking and running is amazing.

:39:34. > :39:40.Her swim needs work. In the last couple of races she's had Anne Haug.

:39:40. > :39:50.But she isn't there today. current leader in the WTS rankings,

:39:50. > :40:00.

:40:01. > :40:06.gone, we'll get a look the everybody's position hopefully if

:40:06. > :40:09.the machine is working properly as they come out of the water. It's

:40:09. > :40:19.Sato and Aileen Reid and Emma Moffatt and Jodie Stimpson in

:40:19. > :40:38.

:40:38. > :40:44.Moffatt and Jodie Stimpson in the swim session in Yokohama.

:40:44. > :40:49.So it is Adachi who leads them through. She's go the clean water in

:40:49. > :40:53.front -- she's got clean water in front. She goes left now, around the

:40:53. > :40:59.first of the white inflatables. It is a little less frantic at this

:40:59. > :41:04.turn. Oh, somebody, number two, Gwen Jorgensen seemed to get a slap in

:41:04. > :41:08.the face as she came around that turn. One or two are getting barged

:41:08. > :41:14.out of position as W it is a little chaotic. Oh, somebody has gone

:41:15. > :41:24.under. Goodness me. Somebody got a ducking, that was Annamaria Mazzetti

:41:25. > :41:37.

:41:37. > :41:42.from Italy, who was ducked with both is enough daylight between the

:41:42. > :41:46.swimmer in position number 12 or so and the next two allow two groups to

:41:46. > :41:51.form. I saw possibly four packs forming there and that's definitely

:41:51. > :41:56.Moffatt there in second place. We would expect to see her there abouts

:41:56. > :42:00.at the front of the swim. I think you are right, four packs is

:42:00. > :42:04.definitely possible here. It looks like we'll have eight or nine in the

:42:04. > :42:09.front group. Someone has gone slightly off course and is going to

:42:09. > :42:13.have to adjust, so they go the right have to adjust, so they go the right

:42:13. > :42:16.side of that orange buoy. Mariko Adachi is our leader. Emma Moffatt

:42:16. > :42:21.is in hot pursuit. Adachi is stretching the lead further. She

:42:21. > :42:25.wants to enjoy this moment and lead the way for the TV cameras and the

:42:25. > :42:33.photographers and the Japanese supporters alike. She will be

:42:33. > :42:39.exiting the water after just under 19 minutes. Here we go. Out of the

:42:39. > :42:43.water. Mariko Adachi, followed by Emma Moffatt. She was second out. In

:42:43. > :42:46.third place, well that may well still be Aileen Reid unless she got

:42:46. > :42:51.still be Aileen Reid unless she got pushed further down. No it is Yuka

:42:51. > :43:01.Sato followed by Jodie Stimpson, the Sato followed by Jodie Stimpson, the

:43:01. > :43:11.

:43:11. > :43:16.are well-stretched. 20 seconds between one to nine. 33 seconds

:43:16. > :43:20.between Adachi in first and Kate McIlroy who came out of the water in

:43:20. > :43:25.tenth. Adachi is looking like she's in

:43:25. > :43:29.excellent shape here. She's spotted her bike. The wetsuit is half off.

:43:29. > :43:34.She'll step out of it. This is all well-reversed now. She has to get

:43:34. > :43:40.this bit right. As has Emma Moffatt. The bits have to go in the right

:43:40. > :43:44.boxes. The helmet has to go on. Running shoes are attached to the

:43:44. > :43:49.pedals on the bike. They call it the fourth discipline in triathlon, the

:43:49. > :43:55.transition. Adachi was first in. She is first out of transition.

:43:55. > :44:04.Caelers is down in 14th. She has work to do. 44 seconds off the pace.

:44:04. > :44:08.work to do. 44 seconds off the pace. There is Idowu. -- Ide.

:44:08. > :44:13.Stimpson is working hard and there is a group of sixth who will hope to

:44:13. > :44:16.join in the fun at the front of the field as well Yes, it is just a

:44:16. > :44:20.shame because obviously Moffatt can't see what was going on behind

:44:20. > :44:28.her. But if she knew there were two girls behind her they could link

:44:28. > :44:32.together and work well to get away from that chasing back.

:44:32. > :44:42.And Moffatt is about to have some company in this front group. It'll

:44:42. > :44:50.

:44:50. > :44:55.Yuri Ide, the current number one ranked athlete certainly here today

:44:55. > :44:59.anyway. And her tenth place in San Diego and third in the World Cup

:44:59. > :45:09.earlier on in the year. So she has earlier on in the year. So she has

:45:09. > :45:20.

:45:20. > :45:25.opportunity for some of the up and coming athletes to have a go and

:45:25. > :45:28.get themselves prepared for the World Series racing, the level is

:45:28. > :45:36.so high now. To go straight to that from junior level would be very

:45:36. > :45:43.tough. 27 minutes and ten seconds. The riders come to complete the

:45:43. > :45:48.first of the nine laps around Yokohama. It's a small field but

:45:48. > :45:52.this is actually quite a big group. 13 athletes to hit this course.

:45:52. > :45:57.There's 20 turns in every lap. Riding in a big group certainly

:45:57. > :46:07.makes it tougher going in and out of those turns. We have seen an

:46:07. > :46:17.

:46:17. > :46:20.athlete go down. Oh!Looked like... Yeah, Maaike Caelers, she may well

:46:20. > :46:30.carry on. But she's going to be struggling. She seemed to be

:46:30. > :46:31.

:46:31. > :46:35.reaching down to adjust her shoe. Toppled over. Hit Roberts. Caelers

:46:35. > :46:38.hit the tarmac hard. Bravely, she is back on her bike and continuing

:46:38. > :46:43.on her way. I wonder how long she will last?

:46:43. > :46:45.I wonder what tactics the girls are going to play here. Jorgensen is in

:46:45. > :46:50.the pack. Jorgensen doesn't really have to do any work. She needs to

:46:50. > :46:53.sit there and wait for the run with the kind of running she's doing at

:46:53. > :46:57.the moment. But up there at the front some of the girls might be be

:46:57. > :47:06.thinking let's see if we can pull away and the time is when you come

:47:06. > :47:11.out of a tight bend and attack. There's the gap.

:47:11. > :47:16.Brave performance. What courage from Caelers of the Netherlands.

:47:16. > :47:22.The Japanese supporters are showing their appreciation for her. They

:47:22. > :47:30.can see she's damaged. Look at her right knee, both knees, in fact.

:47:30. > :47:33.Scarred and red raw. They end lap three with six to go. This is a

:47:33. > :47:37.really, really tough bike course. There isn't really any point where

:47:37. > :47:41.the athletes can get into their rhythm. They're constantly up and

:47:41. > :47:45.down, going around bends, in and out of the saddle. This is one of

:47:45. > :47:49.the toughest courses you can have, I think. They'll find big hills

:47:49. > :47:59.easier than this, it's a course that breaks a rhythm. Here's the

:47:59. > :48:11.

:48:11. > :48:16.second group. It's taken on board The chase group represented by that

:48:16. > :48:26.blue dot. Coming towards the end of lap five.

:48:26. > :48:37.

:48:37. > :48:47.They're more than halfway through the honours at the end of the 5th

:48:47. > :48:48.

:48:48. > :48:54.lap. About an hour and a bit to go in this WTS elite women's race. At

:48:54. > :49:02.this stage, on recent form, you would think that this bodes well

:49:02. > :49:07.for Gwen Jorgensen. We have another collision, it involves one of the

:49:07. > :49:17.Australians and one of the Japanese riders. Here we go. Oh, that was a

:49:17. > :49:24.big hit! Two of them down. A traffic jam behind then. One or two

:49:24. > :49:34.putting their brakes on. We will try and keep you posted as to any

:49:34. > :49:35.

:49:35. > :49:41.news from that. The good news is that Katie Hewison was not involved

:49:41. > :49:46.and this time Caelers stayed out of trouble. It's getting wet, they'll

:49:46. > :49:50.be thankful they've got through the backbone of this bike ride. Now on

:49:50. > :49:56.the 7th lap of nine. The rain held off and they've been able to

:49:56. > :50:02.complete the majority of the 40K ride on dry tarmac. Things will be

:50:02. > :50:06.tricky for the last two-and-a-half laps. Still the same 12. Including

:50:06. > :50:15.Jodie Stimpson of Great Britain who's done plenty of work at the

:50:15. > :50:21.front of the field during the 35 or so kilometres they've ridden so far.

:50:21. > :50:31.It's becoming driving rain now. I think I just saw a flash of

:50:31. > :50:40.

:50:40. > :50:46.lightning, just to make things approach the end of lap 8. We can

:50:46. > :50:52.just see now the second pack, and that 30 seconds now is definitely

:50:52. > :50:55.down to around about 20 seconds with Caelers on the front again,

:50:55. > :50:58.working hard. It's going to be fantastic to see her coming to

:50:58. > :51:07.transition with the front pack. She deserves it after what she's been

:51:07. > :51:12.through in this race. kilometres to go. We do now have

:51:12. > :51:18.one big group at the front of the field. The chasers have caught the

:51:18. > :51:26.leaders. It means that Caelers is back in touch. I am really excited

:51:26. > :51:31.to see this run, to see Caelers and Jorgensen go head-to-head and Emma

:51:31. > :51:36.Moffatt in the mix and Jodie Stimpson, according to her coach,

:51:36. > :51:40.is on fire at the moment. They're going to hit transition and going

:51:40. > :51:49.to be wet and cold and looking forward to going out to the run and

:51:49. > :51:53.getting heat into their body. final stages of the 40k bike and

:51:53. > :52:00.preparations are well under way for the arrival at transition. Bare

:52:00. > :52:06.feet on top of shoes for many of the riders now. They get set to

:52:06. > :52:10.complete the bike course. Remarkably, Caelers has made her

:52:10. > :52:17.way back into contention and will arrive in about 10th position to

:52:17. > :52:23.transition, following that horrible crash early in the bike stage. In

:52:23. > :52:30.they come. Kate McIlroy is first off the bike heading towards her

:52:30. > :52:40.zone in transition. McIlroy is there. Stimpson arrives third.

:52:40. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :53:05.they leave as one big group to begin the first lap of four on two

:53:05. > :53:10.

:53:10. > :53:19.feet. A 10k run to round things off. Emma Moffatt of Australia, Stimpson

:53:19. > :53:25.of Great Britain. First and second. Actually Gentle leading them

:53:25. > :53:33.through. There is Jorgensen looking threatening again. She barges past

:53:33. > :53:43.Caelers. Can Jorgensen possibly inflict similar damage on Emma

:53:43. > :53:48.

:53:48. > :53:54.have been from - was that Darren Smith? It sounded like Darren

:53:54. > :54:01.Smith's voice. Use the motorbike was the shout from - we think it

:54:01. > :54:10.was Darren Smith. There's a shortening gap to the athlete in

:54:10. > :54:14.third place, and it's Gwen Jorgensen. We have seen this before.

:54:15. > :54:20.In San Diego Moffatt was out in front and Jorgensen hunted her down

:54:20. > :54:23.ruthlessly. She's striking again. Cruising here in Yokohama,

:54:24. > :54:27.Jorgensen. Looking back down the road, at the moment barring

:54:27. > :54:31.disaster, this race - the podium is here with these three women.

:54:31. > :54:38.Absolutely. You know what, it's three seconds now and counting.

:54:38. > :54:48.It's two seconds. She's about to join them. Jorgensen kicks a little

:54:48. > :54:52.extra speed into her run. It's deja vu for Emma Moffatt. In San dithe

:54:52. > :54:58.podium was Jorgensen of the USA. Stanford of Great Britain and

:54:59. > :55:08.Moffatt of Australia. Looks like it will be the three same nations here

:55:08. > :55:15.in Yokohama but with Jodie Stimpson raising the British flag this time.

:55:15. > :55:24.Three down, twoupb go. -- one to go in the 10k run. Two, four and six.

:55:24. > :55:31.Jorgensen, Moffatt and Stimpson. me Jodie looking really, really

:55:31. > :55:41.relaxed and great to see her looking so confident. Jorgensen

:55:41. > :55:41.

:55:41. > :55:47.leads them through. Stimpson staying with her. Moffatt is

:55:47. > :55:51.starting to rock and roll slightly in her body shape, not looking as

:55:51. > :55:56.at ease as she was ten minutes ago. But she's keeping the pace going,

:55:56. > :56:02.so far. A steelly look towards the bell from Gwen Jorgensen as she

:56:02. > :56:09.kicks away from Stimpson and Moffatt. Gentle is in fourth

:56:09. > :56:13.position and running nicely with the incredible Caelers, who fell on

:56:13. > :56:22.the bike, back in 5th. But it's Jorgensen's race for the winning

:56:22. > :56:28.again. She's moved clear. Not only will the win be hers in Yokohama,

:56:28. > :56:32.but the lead in the WTS rankings for 2013. She will move ahead of

:56:32. > :56:39.Anne Haug to a very solid position at the top of the rankings. She's

:56:40. > :56:47.done the hard work. She's timed it perfectly once again. 18 seconds is

:56:47. > :56:51.the lead now. Moffatt and stitch son are fighting -- Stimpson are

:56:51. > :56:59.fighting it out for second position. An outstanding performance once

:56:59. > :57:07.again from Gwen Jorgensen. Perfect timing. Brilliant tactics. An

:57:07. > :57:12.incredible level of composure and she will take victory in Yokohama,

:57:12. > :57:18.as she did in San Diego. Taking out Emma Moffatt in the process on the

:57:18. > :57:23.final lap, as she did in San Diego. The battle goes on for second. But

:57:23. > :57:28.there's absolutely no doubt about the winner. Gwen Jorgensen can ease

:57:28. > :57:35.it up now on the final strait as Stimpson and Moffatt continue to

:57:35. > :57:42.chase it out for second. The gap was 18 seconds last time we looked.

:57:42. > :57:45.On to the blue carpet, into the transition for the final time comes

:57:45. > :57:52.Gwen Jorgensen, not only to take the win but also to take the lead

:57:52. > :57:57.in the WTS standings for 2013. A fabulous display from the American.

:57:57. > :58:02.Moved her way up through the field on the run, cruised up towards the

:58:02. > :58:09.leaders and then when she felt the time was right kicked away from

:58:09. > :58:16.them. It's going to be a fast time, as well. Around one hour and 57

:58:16. > :58:22.minutes. She accepts the support from the crowds at the side of the

:58:22. > :58:30.course. She won in the blazing heat of San Diego. She will win again in

:58:30. > :58:35.the wet and cold of Yokohama. Just over an hour and 57 for Gwen

:58:35. > :58:39.Jorgensen. The battle is on for second! It's between Moffatt and

:58:39. > :58:45.Stimpson. Moffatt and Stimpson, it's going to be tight! It's very

:58:45. > :58:53.tight. It's Moffatt who gets it, by one second with a smile on her face.

:58:53. > :59:00.Stimpson pushed down to third. A grimace on her face. It's Gentle

:59:00. > :59:07.who holds on to fourth position. Remember that Caelers fell object

:59:07. > :59:15.to -- on to the tarmac in the early stages but she's courageously

:59:15. > :59:21.picked herself up and finished in 5th position in Yokohama. The final

:59:21. > :59:26.results of the women's competition and another win for Gwen Jorgensen.

:59:26. > :59:33.14 seconds clear of Emma Moffatt with Jodie Stimpson in third. An

:59:33. > :59:43.excellent result also for Great Britain's Katie Hewison who

:59:43. > :59:50.

:59:51. > :59:58.podium once. Today you looked under control. I wouldn't say totally

:59:58. > :00:01.under control, but yeah. Didn't look like you were panicking

:00:01. > :00:05.through the first couple of kilometres and you continued to eat

:00:05. > :00:09.into that lead, that's got to be a strategy that's working for you.

:00:09. > :00:15.am glad it looked like I wasn't panicking. Those girls were running

:00:15. > :00:20.fast the first two laps. I tried to focus on the basics in the race.

:00:20. > :00:25.That first lap a little bit of a breakaway. Can all -- with all the

:00:25. > :00:29.turns it's not as fast. I wasn't able to get a breakaway.

:00:29. > :00:32.My first podium, I am thrilled. Couldn't be happier. Being from the

:00:32. > :00:37.UK, every domestic race is in the rain mostly, so it definitely

:00:37. > :00:41.played to my strengths and it was more so about being calm and

:00:41. > :00:45.staying upright. With Jodie getting her best ever

:00:45. > :00:48.result it's been another successful weekend for British triathlon and

:00:48. > :00:52.it's great to see many of you racing here in Wilmslow. Don't

:00:52. > :00:58.forget many of those taking part here today will be back in action

:00:58. > :01:03.in September with the creme de la creme of the World At the age group

:01:03. > :01:06.World Championships at the grand final in Hyde Park. For us, like

:01:06. > :01:12.both the Brownlee brothers, we will be back in action at the next stop

:01:12. > :01:15.in the World Triathlon Series in Madrid on 1st and 2nd June. You can
