:00:42. > :00:48.from all around the world have come to Edmonton to swim, bike and run.

:00:49. > :00:53.It is a festival of triathlon with amateur age groups, Paralympic

:00:54. > :00:59.athletes and juniors on the same course. The heart of the action has

:01:00. > :01:03.been the elite races, we already saw Gwen Jorgensen of America winning

:01:04. > :01:07.her first world title after wiping out a 69 seconds deficit at the

:01:08. > :01:13.start of the ten km run and now it is time for the final race of the

:01:14. > :01:18.2014 series, the elite men. All season long Javier Gomez has looked

:01:19. > :01:21.destined to be world champion but a late-season surge from Jonny

:01:22. > :01:26.Brownlee of Great Britain has kept up the pressure on the Spaniard.

:01:27. > :01:34.Will there be one final twist to the tale of 2014? The opening race of

:01:35. > :01:39.the 2014 world triathlon series. Gomez has thrown down the gauntlet

:01:40. > :01:46.again. He raises his finger and takes the race by storm. Javier

:01:47. > :01:52.Gomez wins Cape Town. Comfortably. A sprint finish for the line, it is

:01:53. > :01:59.Gomez. Yet another win for the Spaniard. In Chicago. Javier Gomez

:02:00. > :02:04.struggling in Stockholm and outlast Johnny can celebrate. Victory in his

:02:05. > :02:09.own right. -- at last. There is still one more race to come. While

:02:10. > :02:13.the pressure is on Javier Gomez it is important to stress that the

:02:14. > :02:17.title race is out of Jonny Brownlee's control, as long as

:02:18. > :02:27.Javier Gomez makes the top for the trophy will be going back to Spain.

:02:28. > :02:29.His compatriot Mario Mola, Jau Barrera are not out of it yet but

:02:30. > :02:34.realistically they are fighting for a place on the podium. As for the

:02:35. > :02:41.series leader, Javier Gomez, he has the B1 of the most athletes on the

:02:42. > :02:44.circus. -- he has to be one of the most popular athletes on the

:02:45. > :02:50.circuit. Everybody agrees there is something about him. He is really

:02:51. > :02:55.humble, anybody can come up and talk to him and you would not expect he

:02:56. > :03:00.is well champion. He has been brilliant for the sport in terms of

:03:01. > :03:06.popularising it. He is not only great, one of the best athletes in

:03:07. > :03:13.triathlon, he is also a really nice person. I do not have about word

:03:14. > :03:18.about him. He is King of Spain. I do not think I am that nice. I think I

:03:19. > :03:21.have a pretty good relationship with everyone. Some of them you feel

:03:22. > :03:26.closer, some you do not talk that much but I do not think I have many

:03:27. > :03:31.enemies. Nobody can be that good without having some killer instinct.

:03:32. > :03:36.But he is a very nice guy, he is smiley. But at the same time in the

:03:37. > :03:41.background he is a competitor. He is a really smart trainer and racer. In

:03:42. > :03:49.most of the races he does not need to give 110% because he is so good.

:03:50. > :03:56.Regardless of how fast the races he is still out there. He has a lot of

:03:57. > :04:02.versatility. What and yet another win for the Spaniard, he has done it

:04:03. > :04:12.in style in Chicago. You try to learn from mistakes and train better

:04:13. > :04:15.than three or five years ago. I want to learn with one of the best

:04:16. > :04:19.swimmers on the circuit, he helped me in the water and forced me to

:04:20. > :04:24.work hard and I forced him a bit more in the other disciplines. Even

:04:25. > :04:29.in training and how disciplined he is, I take that experience forward

:04:30. > :04:33.with me. It will be hard to keep up with him but he races with such a

:04:34. > :04:39.different style to Brownlee. I love how Brownlee races, they are

:04:40. > :04:45.completely fearless. Javier does not quite have the same approach. He has

:04:46. > :04:50.fear, but he still prepares, he is always there when it matters. He was

:04:51. > :04:58.the guy who moved the sport on. A bad day for him is coming fifth or

:04:59. > :05:03.sixth or something. I thought, who is that, there is trouble brewing.

:05:04. > :05:08.He went on to dominate. I followed him into thousand five and he was

:05:09. > :05:13.dominating every race. Javier Gomez will cross the line in second, he

:05:14. > :05:17.will be the world champion. I have raced him for a long time and so has

:05:18. > :05:22.Johnny so the last few years it has been asked battling it out and he

:05:23. > :05:28.has won most of them. He went from one of the youngest to one of the

:05:29. > :05:31.oldest, I am really proud. I still feel competitive with the young guys

:05:32. > :05:37.so maybe the day I am not able to keep up with them will be the time

:05:38. > :05:41.to think about something else. He has been my inspiration in triathlon

:05:42. > :05:45.since I was a kid. The train next to him, I think I can learn from the

:05:46. > :05:49.best and learn so much from him. He has a lot of respect because he is

:05:50. > :05:56.mentally very tough. He is probably the all-round triathlete. He is one

:05:57. > :05:59.of the best ever, changed and adapted to the way the sport has

:06:00. > :06:06.gone. Obviously the Brownlee brothers came in and completely

:06:07. > :06:10.changed the way the sport has gone. Gomez and Brownlee, little game of

:06:11. > :06:15.cat and mouse. He has been able to adapt to that and finds new levels

:06:16. > :06:19.to compete and beat them. We have spoken about the chances of them

:06:20. > :06:25.winning but we don't speak much about it. I scared I might make him

:06:26. > :06:31.nervous. I think he will be world champion but it is not written in

:06:32. > :06:34.stone. I never thought I would win three world titles and now the

:06:35. > :06:37.chance to get the fourth is amazing. I am looking forward to giving my

:06:38. > :06:44.best and seen what happens. Hopefully get that world title

:06:45. > :06:48.again. If Javier Gomez does become world champion again he will be

:06:49. > :06:52.making history. There is only one other man with four world titles in

:06:53. > :06:57.the sport, he's British that his surname is not Brownlee. Yet another

:06:58. > :07:05.emphatic victory. You would like to surname is not Brownlee. Yet another

:07:06. > :07:09.emphatic victory. You think we were racing at the same speed as the guys

:07:10. > :07:12.today but the sport has got a lot better, a lot more mass

:07:13. > :07:18.participation and acknowledgement in terms of what the sport represents.

:07:19. > :07:23.I remember 25 years ago actually sitting as a spectator on the

:07:24. > :07:28.sidelines at the inaugural World Championships in France. I was 18

:07:29. > :07:33.years old. I was switching nationalities from my native South

:07:34. > :07:36.Africa to Great Britain. I was hanging onto an offence and watching

:07:37. > :07:42.men race and feeling jealous and wanting to part of that. I think

:07:43. > :07:47.that was the culmination of my career in terms of the drive it gave

:07:48. > :07:52.me and wanting to be part of that. Simon Lessing of Great Britain. The

:07:53. > :07:56.thing I am most proud of is the fact I raced for 20 years. A lot of

:07:57. > :08:00.athletes come into the sport that may have a season or two but the

:08:01. > :08:07.truth arc of, the same thing about the Brownlees, the consistency. You

:08:08. > :08:12.can come back and race at the top, not month after month but year after

:08:13. > :08:16.year. I have said they can really don't want to do in the sport

:08:17. > :08:20.anything they want to do. They have the consistency and the strength in

:08:21. > :08:24.all three elements. That is not something you can take for granted.

:08:25. > :08:28.They obviously work hard. What you see today is the beginning of what

:08:29. > :08:33.we started. Team orientation is huge, we never really had bad. We

:08:34. > :08:37.raced as individuals and there is still that mentality to race on your

:08:38. > :08:40.own. Back in the day, the strongest swimmer, cyclist and runner would

:08:41. > :08:46.win the race. There is a lot more strategy now and cunning, to a

:08:47. > :08:53.point. It makes for exciting racing, that is for sure. We see it in each

:08:54. > :08:56.of these World Cup races. There is essentially at least five or ten

:08:57. > :09:02.guys in the last millimetre sprinting to the finishing line. I

:09:03. > :09:09.have not raced this exact course but there is he some hills, that will be

:09:10. > :09:14.a factor. -- kilometre. The hills will take it out of them. To appoint

:09:15. > :09:18.trying to limit the amount of energy expended in the swim and the bike

:09:19. > :09:22.and wait for the run. It will always come down to running out with this

:09:23. > :09:29.format. Good luck to the strongest runner on the day. Simon's Korea

:09:30. > :09:34.puts into perspective what Jonny Brownlee has achieved by 24. He has

:09:35. > :09:37.already been world champion and has Olympic and Commonwealth medals.

:09:38. > :09:41.Adding to that, in the past four years he has only finished off the

:09:42. > :09:44.podium twice, both times this year but he has bounced back and could

:09:45. > :09:53.win his second world title this weekend. It has been a long year,

:09:54. > :09:57.very long year. Looking back to Auckland it feels a long time ago.

:09:58. > :10:02.The start of the season did not go to well. In Auckland and Cape Town I

:10:03. > :10:09.was not in great form. As Javier showed in 2013, the early races are

:10:10. > :10:13.more about picking up points. Then obviously London and Yokohama are

:10:14. > :10:17.much harder and it was a shock not to be on the podium for the first

:10:18. > :10:25.time in 48 races. But it was nice to take the pressure off. Now I can

:10:26. > :10:29.race more aggressively. But I was thinking, whatever happens I have to

:10:30. > :10:35.be on the podium. I want to get the 50 races in a row. That affected me,

:10:36. > :10:39.I did not take as many risks. I was thinking, should I chase that person

:10:40. > :10:45.down, but maybe risk not being on the podium? I raced to sometimes and

:10:46. > :10:50.after the commonwealths I am more relaxed. That was the main focus of

:10:51. > :10:54.the year. You got your Commonwealth medal, you are an Olympic medallist

:10:55. > :10:57.and have been world champion. When you look at your career due must be

:10:58. > :11:03.extremely pleased? I am very pleased. In the future I would like

:11:04. > :11:10.to convert a few of those medals into champions, but I have been

:11:11. > :11:13.unlucky if you like being in the same time as Alistair and Javier

:11:14. > :11:17.Gomez but at the same time I would not be as good without them. But

:11:18. > :11:21.getting those medals is what I have always wanted. One thing about the

:11:22. > :11:27.World Series is having the grand final. I like the one-day races and

:11:28. > :11:32.the grand final has an extra special atmosphere. I will go out and try to

:11:33. > :11:37.win the race and know that if Javier comes forth I cannot do anything

:11:38. > :11:42.about it. Jonathan Brownlee will take his first world triathlon

:11:43. > :11:45.series victory of the season. In Stockholm I thought I had no chance

:11:46. > :11:50.of winning the series but that gave us a glimmer of hope. Javier was

:11:51. > :11:55.obviously ill, had a bad race but maybe that might affect his

:11:56. > :11:59.confidence. We are going to try to distance him on the bike I think and

:12:00. > :12:03.see what happens. The chance of him coming off the podium is really

:12:04. > :12:10.small. The chance of him coming fifth is even smaller. All I can do

:12:11. > :12:14.is go as hard as I can. Let me remind you how it will be decided.

:12:15. > :12:18.Javier Gomez needs to finish in the top four but if you are rooting for

:12:19. > :12:25.Jonny Brownlee, you really want him to win this race and to finish fifth

:12:26. > :12:27.or lower. And even though he cannot become world champion, you have

:12:28. > :12:32.Alistair Brownlee in the mix, wanting to end his season on a high.

:12:33. > :12:37.It will be a gripping race. For one last time in 2014 let me thank you

:12:38. > :12:45.over to the commentators, Matt and Steve. Welcome to Edmonton, in

:12:46. > :12:49.Alberta. The world triathlon series the 2014 comes to its conclusion

:12:50. > :12:55.here this afternoon with the last race of the tour. The men's grand

:12:56. > :13:01.final. The World Championship crown is up for grabs. Likely to go to

:13:02. > :13:04.this man, Javier Gomez Noya. But this young man, Jonathan Brownlee

:13:05. > :13:17.and him, Mario Mola, may all have a say. We are about 15 minutes from

:13:18. > :13:23.downtown Edmonton. The swim takes in two laps of the lake before a

:13:24. > :13:27.slightly peculiar bike course which involves two 11 km loops up and

:13:28. > :13:38.around the Alberta legislature building. Spectacular river crossing

:13:39. > :13:39.to send them back onto the Parkside of the North Saskatchewan River.

:13:40. > :13:42.Back to of the North Saskatchewan River.

:13:43. > :13:55.changeover. To this shorter laps of the North Saskatchewan River.

:13:56. > :14:00.the bike. Two 11 km laps followed by four shorter labs, nonetheless

:14:01. > :14:10.spectacular and then the run takes in 42.5 km laps around the park to

:14:11. > :14:15.finish off. -- four laps of 2.5 km. This is the final race of the 2014

:14:16. > :14:21.world triathlon series. The men's grand finale. They are underway.

:14:22. > :14:28.Little run along the sand, spectacular start. Clearwater in the

:14:29. > :14:34.late. Perfect swimming conditions. The wet suits compulsory today

:14:35. > :14:39.because of the chilly water conditions. Look at the athletes

:14:40. > :14:46.spread out, total of 71 starting this grand finale. This series

:14:47. > :14:50.spread out, total of 71 starting crisscrossed the continents, taking

:14:51. > :14:56.in races in Auckland, Africa for the first time, this is the second visit

:14:57. > :15:01.to North America. It has been a truly intercontinental world

:15:02. > :15:08.triathlon series. We will expect the usual suspects to force the pace at

:15:09. > :15:14.the front of the swim. We will keep a and I open for Henri Schoeman of

:15:15. > :15:23.South Africa and for Richard Varga, the Slovakian swimming specialist. I

:15:24. > :15:27.wish I was able to train with the Brownie brothers but fascinating and

:15:28. > :15:33.the start, Javier Gomez on the left-hand side and Jonathan Brownlee

:15:34. > :15:42.to the right. And the first stroke Johnny looked up and were straight

:15:43. > :15:45.onto Javier. Very wide open field to start with, as ever we are looking

:15:46. > :15:56.for the better swimmers surging to the front and everyone else trying

:15:57. > :16:04.to get the slipstream. This is a cracking start for, I think, that is

:16:05. > :16:14.Jonathan Brownlee actually, no, that is Richard Varga. The swim cap makes

:16:15. > :16:18.it difficult to spot. Number two is worn by Jonathan Brownlee, number

:16:19. > :16:23.one by Javier Gomez. Richard Varga is taking this one out, he has

:16:24. > :16:28.covered the first couple of hundred metres in double quick time. They

:16:29. > :16:34.have put an extra turns because it is quite a small lake. A little bit

:16:35. > :16:39.of chaos at times on these terms, you do not want to get caught and

:16:40. > :16:43.squeezed on the inside. Somebody has gone the wrong way around and will

:16:44. > :16:47.have to double back. One of the athletes was forced the wrong way

:16:48. > :16:52.around and has to make a few extra strokes to get back on track. There

:16:53. > :16:59.is Alistair Brownlee, he has had a victory this season, coming in the

:17:00. > :17:16.Hamburg Sprint, the limpet champion. -- the Olympic champion.

:17:17. > :17:23.It is quite cool in Edmonton this afternoon. Good triathlon

:17:24. > :17:29.conditions. The ground is dry for the bike. During Saturday 's women's

:17:30. > :17:35.race we did see three or four monastic rashes so they will be

:17:36. > :17:41.aware that the tarmac can be slippery and places -- nasty

:17:42. > :17:49.crashes. Richard Varga is still leading. It looked like Henri

:17:50. > :17:55.Schoeman tried to catch up, but he has not bridged the gap. Looks like

:17:56. > :18:06.Alistair Brownlee is in fifth or sixth position. Gomez and Brownlee

:18:07. > :18:07.started side-by-side and were matching each other stroke for

:18:08. > :18:24.stroke. They have got a couple of busy

:18:25. > :18:28.intersections to negotiate on two wheels and one or two spectacular

:18:29. > :18:32.river crossings which gives spectators and riders are like

:18:33. > :18:38.incredible views of the city of Edmonton. We are a couple of hundred

:18:39. > :18:43.miles north of Calgary which is mountainous, the host of the 1988

:18:44. > :18:48.Olympic Winter games. Here in Edmonton it is relatively flat.

:18:49. > :18:52.There is one claim on the bike to worry about, one which takes them up

:18:53. > :18:58.towards one of the government buildings, the Alberta legislative

:18:59. > :19:11.building, they will pass in front of that a couple times. On the first

:19:12. > :19:16.two cycle laps. They have still got the second lap of the swimmer to

:19:17. > :19:22.come. At the end of the forest it is Richard Varga who comes out three or

:19:23. > :19:31.four seconds ahead of Henry Schuman. -- Henri Schoeman. No sign of

:19:32. > :19:45.Raphael. Dmitry Polyanskiy, twice in the top

:19:46. > :19:57.five this season, down in 14th coming out of this lap. Javier Gomez

:19:58. > :20:02.in 19th. 15 seconds behind, he is ahead of Jonathan Brownlee however.

:20:03. > :20:13.About two thirds of the way through the swim now, 1500 metre swim. They

:20:14. > :20:18.will except the water and make the jog up towards transition, undoing

:20:19. > :20:24.their wet suits as they go. Pick up their bikes and head out. Looking at

:20:25. > :20:30.that group, we expect a group of at least a dozen, maybe more like 15,

:20:31. > :20:36.20, to form. Richard Varga will not be able to move away from the rest

:20:37. > :20:40.of them if he comes out of the water and Lacey gets to work with Alistair

:20:41. > :20:43.Brownlee. If Alistair Brownlee is right behind him coming out of the

:20:44. > :20:52.water then they might fancy a little breakaway, we will see how that

:20:53. > :20:56.develops. Perhaps if Alistair comes out of the water and get the

:20:57. > :21:02.information his brother is 12, 15 seconds down... I think Alistair has

:21:03. > :21:09.lost his swim cap. I think he has lost his goggles. It could be the

:21:10. > :21:16.swim hat and perhaps even the goggles which have come off. We will

:21:17. > :21:20.get a good view as they come around. Third position we think is Alistair

:21:21. > :21:27.and we think he is swimming without goggles. He has got no goggles and

:21:28. > :21:32.no swimming cap. Luckily for him it is freshwater, if it was saltwater

:21:33. > :21:36.it would be a different story but freshwater he can probably just

:21:37. > :21:50.about manage it. I remember being told that one did I swimming session

:21:51. > :21:57.without the swim hat and goggles week in preparation for events like

:21:58. > :22:05.this. Alistair may well have had them ripped from his head. On

:22:06. > :22:13.purpose? No. Accidentally? Possibly. Who knows. It is going to happen,

:22:14. > :22:15.the athletes at such a close level, they will be looking for the

:22:16. > :22:20.shortest line and accidents will happen. Nobody will go in

:22:21. > :22:23.deliberately to try and take an unfair advantage, if they are

:22:24. > :22:28.spotted by the judges, the referee, they will get a penalty. And the

:22:29. > :22:30.athletes know each other so well, they travelled together, the

:22:31. > :22:36.travelling circus, they would not they travelled together, the

:22:37. > :22:43.it to their friends. Richard Varga 's leading, he is good friends with

:22:44. > :22:50.Alistair Brownlee. Good conditions for these athletes approaching the

:22:51. > :22:54.end of the swim. This small red markers must be very difficult to

:22:55. > :22:58.site. The swimmers will be the lying on the legs in front of them to

:22:59. > :23:03.maintain a good position, the shortest line going through. There

:23:04. > :23:11.is Jonny Brownlee. Has a little bit of work to do, seems to be working

:23:12. > :23:16.hard there. Someone else has lost their swimming cap but kept their

:23:17. > :23:21.goggles, I am not sure who that is, to the left of Jonathan Brownlee. It

:23:22. > :23:24.might be Gomez, he was not far away from Jonny Brownlee when they came

:23:25. > :23:32.out of the water at the end of the first lap. They are about to

:23:33. > :23:36.complete the swim, the end of the second lap coming fast, Richard

:23:37. > :23:40.Varga has taken it on from the start, as usual. Whenever he races

:23:41. > :23:47.he is the first out of the water and the same applies here in Canada this

:23:48. > :24:01.afternoon. Alistair Brownlee third out of the water. In fourth position

:24:02. > :24:09.is Alessandro Fabian of Italy. We will keep an eye out for the Spanish

:24:10. > :24:15.flag, we are looking for Gomez. Jonathan Brownlee comes out in 12th,

:24:16. > :24:21.he has made up some ground. Gomez coming out in 17th position. They

:24:22. > :24:25.are with the front group, or maize and Jonathan Brownlee. Then the

:24:26. > :24:35.second group arrives including Vincent

:24:36. > :24:42.the leaders are stripped down to the waist in terms of their wet suits

:24:43. > :24:45.and have arrived in transition. Alistair Brownlee managed to smile

:24:46. > :24:53.as he looked at his brother arriving in transition. Alistair gets his

:24:54. > :24:56.bike helmet on, Gomez has arrived at position number one with the golden

:24:57. > :25:02.number one on his thighs and upper arms. He has picked up his bike and

:25:03. > :25:06.is on his way, he has done the right thing in transition, no penalty will

:25:07. > :25:15.be forthcoming for any breaking of the rules. The leaders are on their

:25:16. > :25:27.way out of transition. We have got a pair, Mario Mola, who was a little

:25:28. > :25:33.bit off the pace in the water has found his bike and is on his way.

:25:34. > :25:37.Quite a long way back there, looked like we had four swimmers getting

:25:38. > :25:44.out very tightly together and that has immediately become two. Yes, it

:25:45. > :25:50.is the Frenchman and the Slovakian, they are used to keeping each other

:25:51. > :25:56.company on the water and have taken up the pace at the front. Richard

:25:57. > :26:01.Varga giving himself a wash down and getting himself and early drink as

:26:02. > :26:10.they begin this first 11 kilometre loop. Raphael looking over his

:26:11. > :26:14.shoulder, they will not look too hard because they know that a

:26:15. > :26:19.working group of 12-15 behind them will close them down quite quickly,

:26:20. > :26:23.quite possibly before the end of this first lap. You can see the

:26:24. > :26:31.leading pair and then you can see the next group of one, two, three,

:26:32. > :26:35.four is just behind, a second or two behind. We think the second group

:26:36. > :26:41.might well contain one if not both of the Brownlee brothers. And

:26:42. > :26:53.possibly Gomez as well. It certainly contains Henry -- henry schoolmen.

:26:54. > :26:59.Igor Polyanskiy is in there. That must be Alessandro Fabian who is in

:27:00. > :27:14.there, the Italian who was Going around the intersection and

:27:15. > :27:19.down under the freeway. Looping round and away they go, towards the

:27:20. > :27:26.city and climbed towards the government building. This is the

:27:27. > :27:31.chase group, one of the Russians at the back seems to be having problems

:27:32. > :27:34.with his gears. They are at the front the two main contenders for

:27:35. > :27:41.the world title, a word between them, Javier Gomez chatting with

:27:42. > :27:44.Jonathan Brownlee, they might be competitors battling it out for the

:27:45. > :27:47.world title but they know they have two work together here to do some

:27:48. > :27:53.damage and close the gap on the leading group. It is not often you

:27:54. > :28:00.see Jonny Brownlee and Javier Gomez miss the lead group leading the

:28:01. > :28:03.transition coming out of the water. They are invariably at the front but

:28:04. > :28:09.did not quite get things right at the start of the swim. They might

:28:10. > :28:15.have a go on the way up the hill towards the Alberta legislative

:28:16. > :28:20.building. They are closing the gap every step of the way. The front six

:28:21. > :28:25.on the way up the hill. Alistair Brownlee leading the way, out of the

:28:26. > :28:31.saddle. He is controlling the pace at the front. Richard Varga, his

:28:32. > :28:37.training partner, behind him. The North Saskatchewan River below. The

:28:38. > :28:47.skyscrapers of Edmonton in the background. Igor Polyanskiy,

:28:48. > :28:52.Aurelien Raphael and Alistair Andrew -- Alessandro Fabian of Italy there

:28:53. > :28:56.as well. They will go in front of these big tackler building meanwhile

:28:57. > :29:03.the chasing pack have arrived at the bottom and begin their claim. -- is

:29:04. > :29:14.sent. The group we just saw making the

:29:15. > :29:28.turn must have been the third group. Quite a sizeable number here.

:29:29. > :29:35.Hirokatsu Tayama of Japan is now at the back. We have the lead group,

:29:36. > :29:40.then a group of about 20 I would guess. Crossing in front of the

:29:41. > :29:46.government building. The speed bumps have been carpeted to give them a

:29:47. > :29:50.slightly smoother ride. It looks as though the big movers there where

:29:51. > :29:53.Javier Gomez and Jonny Brownlee, desperately knowing that they need

:29:54. > :29:55.to get into the lead pack and they have established that very early on

:29:56. > :30:17.in the second discipline. Royle seems to be focused on

:30:18. > :30:23.following the wheel. We have not Royle seems to be focused on

:30:24. > :30:28.seen him go forward yet. Now he knows he has to do some work. It

:30:29. > :30:37.looks like perhaps they are making a small breakaway. This leading group.

:30:38. > :30:41.Aaron Royle has been persuaded, told by Alistair Brownlee, you have to

:30:42. > :30:46.work hard if you want to stay with us. We have seen Richard Varga in

:30:47. > :30:50.this situation many times and he has not so far been able to maintain

:30:51. > :30:54.that on the run so in the back of his mind he has to be thinking, the

:30:55. > :30:59.bigger gap it will be better for me. Richard Varga does a good Yorkshire

:31:00. > :31:10.accent, spends a lot of time training there. They are not in the

:31:11. > :31:15.same shot. That is the third group coming through. Those are the

:31:16. > :31:23.chasers. The front three, the breakaway, have made that right turn

:31:24. > :31:31.back down towards Hawrelak Park. We have the third group. The

:31:32. > :31:37.stragglers. That third group look very destructive, no action at the

:31:38. > :31:46.front, really spreading out, nobody seems prepared to put themselves

:31:47. > :31:57.forward to take the work on. This is the chase group. Jonathan Brownlee

:31:58. > :32:04.near the front of that group. That is Richard Varga, he has dropped off

:32:05. > :32:16.the front breakaway trio. He could not stay with Alistair Brownlee and

:32:17. > :32:20.Aaron Royle. The Norwegian did not want to spend too much time and the

:32:21. > :32:39.front, so there is now a chasing group. It looks as though they are

:32:40. > :32:46.working for each other. Both Brownlees and Javier Gomez. The

:32:47. > :32:54.breakaway did not last long. Richard Varga the last of the trio to rejoin

:32:55. > :32:57.the main group. Once they come through transition we will get a

:32:58. > :33:03.complete check on the runners and riders and see who is in there. How

:33:04. > :33:09.many numbers are in the front group. And if it stays like this, obviously

:33:10. > :33:14.there is a long way to go around anything can happen. If it does stay

:33:15. > :33:24.like this it will come down to a final 10,000 metre foot race for the

:33:25. > :33:31.title. Potentially between Jonathan Brownlee and Javier Gomez. We have

:33:32. > :33:40.seen plenty of decent races between them already this season.

:33:41. > :33:43.seen plenty of decent races between had such a long season. He was

:33:44. > :33:47.racing at the New Year, you just wonder, so many races, if

:33:48. > :33:50.racing at the New Year, you just taken their toll. The Olympic

:33:51. > :33:55.distance race he has been absolutely superb, it is the sprint distance

:33:56. > :33:57.weather had sea has not come through as we would have expected but

:33:58. > :34:05.interestingly after the Commonwealth Games, people ridiculously

:34:06. > :34:09.early-season writing off the Brownlees, then they came back with

:34:10. > :34:13.our magnificent Commonwealth Games. Re-establishing themselves on the

:34:14. > :34:18.world triathlon series as well. Gomis has done every race. Most of

:34:19. > :34:24.the triathletes have had a week off, a race off at some point. Gomis has

:34:25. > :34:28.not struggled with the travelling, he has not minded crisscrossing the

:34:29. > :34:36.globe. Taking in all the continents that the world triathlon series has

:34:37. > :34:41.entailed. He clearly travels well. So in the transition at the end of

:34:42. > :34:47.the first long lab. Let's get a look at exactly who is involved. Five

:34:48. > :34:53.laps to go, Javier Gomez first, then Jonathan Brownlee and Royle.

:34:54. > :35:07.Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway there.

:35:08. > :35:30.The good swimmers there. 20 plus. No macro Mario Mola, and no Richard

:35:31. > :35:34.Murray. We will see if Mario Mola and Richard Murray are in this

:35:35. > :35:42.second group, 37 seconds behind. We think Mario Mola is there. We are

:35:43. > :35:46.not getting the whole list on the screen before we lose that graphic.

:35:47. > :35:59.We think Mario Mola is in there but not sure if Murray is. The leaders

:36:00. > :36:05.on their way for the second 11 km tour of Edmonton. The pace at the

:36:06. > :36:11.front staying very fast, again just the focus. Watching the athletes at

:36:12. > :36:16.the back. They really have to work hard to maintain, through every

:36:17. > :36:27.twist and turn, gaps beginning to develop. Over the bridge, takes them

:36:28. > :36:31.out of the park and across to the other side of the river. Into the

:36:32. > :36:39.main part of the city. At the end of this bridge they then circle and

:36:40. > :36:45.spiral down towards the freeway below. Under the bridge and head off

:36:46. > :36:54.towards the climb at the expense of the highest point of the course. On

:36:55. > :36:59.the higher level of the Bridge, recreational cyclist there on the

:37:00. > :37:05.third wave on the other side of the road. Watching the triathletes go

:37:06. > :37:11.past and tops three. -- on the footway. -- at top speed. Somebody

:37:12. > :37:18.having another go on this second lap, is that Jonathan or Alistair?

:37:19. > :37:25.As usual. Decided to shake things up a bit. Anybody want to come? They

:37:26. > :37:30.are all coming. It has certainly shake them up, they are having to

:37:31. > :37:35.work hard to stay with him. Seven or eight of them. It will take a huge

:37:36. > :37:38.effort to get back on because you know Alistair Brownlee will not take

:37:39. > :37:43.any prisoners, he keeps looking back, attacks again from the front.

:37:44. > :37:48.Forcing the others to go with him, knowing they will have to do that.

:37:49. > :37:52.Try to get in the break before we get to the latter stages of the

:37:53. > :38:18.cycle before going into the ten km run. By the time they have finished

:38:19. > :38:32.this lab, -- lap, they will have peddled 22 km with 21.2 left. --

:38:33. > :38:39.pedalled Full. It is slightly adjusted today, rather than 40 km.

:38:40. > :38:45.The chasing group is huge. There is not much pace about this group.

:38:46. > :38:49.Mario Mola and we think Richard Murray in there. We have seen Mario

:38:50. > :38:59.Mola a few times but no positive sighting yet Richard Murray. Some

:39:00. > :39:06.pretty solid results, fifth in the Stockholm sprint.

:39:07. > :39:11.pretty solid results, fifth in the third in Yokohama.

:39:12. > :39:23.pretty solid results, fifth in the runners in the field. Two long laps

:39:24. > :39:30.just about complete. This is where the navigation changes, they will go

:39:31. > :39:39.from the long lab to the short lap. 21 km roughly still to go. The

:39:40. > :39:45.shorter distance now avoids any contact now with downtown Edmonton,

:39:46. > :39:51.they will stay in the leafy suburbs where the race began, in and around

:39:52. > :40:04.Hawrelak Park for the remainder of the world triathlon series grand

:40:05. > :40:12.finale. The two Russians, Polyanskiy, keeping out of trouble

:40:13. > :40:21.and the back. We know that Dmitry Polyanskiy is a good runner, Igor

:40:22. > :40:26.possibly less so. The way this race is now spread out we have seen the

:40:27. > :40:43.attacks, the attempts to get away. Kabul of brave attempts. You just

:40:44. > :40:54.wonder with the changing speed if the chase pack has any possibility

:40:55. > :41:02.of bridging the gap. Gomez back to the front. Dogs of New Zealand. --

:41:03. > :41:15.Tony Dodds. Still the front. Dogs of New Zealand. --

:41:16. > :41:22.together, moving up on the right-hand side, we have seen then

:41:23. > :41:35.moved to the front, and gradually working their way back and starting

:41:36. > :41:44.the whole process again. Polyanskiy holds his hand out, asks Aaron Royle

:41:45. > :41:51.to come through. The Brownlee brothers are in and around this area

:41:52. > :41:55.as well. They are approaching 49.5 minutes since the race began and

:41:56. > :42:07.about to finish their second long lab, so the shorter loops begin now.

:42:08. > :42:22.-- long black. -- lap. Jonathan comes through in fifth position.

:42:23. > :42:26.Then Varga. Igor Polyanskiy. Alistair Brownlee has eased off and

:42:27. > :42:37.is just taking it read easily at the back. One or two fell in this

:42:38. > :42:42.section yesterday, it got a bit slippery at times, loose stones on

:42:43. > :42:50.top of riding surface. They are avoiding in the trouble. We will get

:42:51. > :42:58.the gap shortly. At the end of the first lap it was 37 seconds but I

:42:59. > :43:07.imagine it has grown a little. I think they may have come down. To me

:43:08. > :43:12.it seemed as if the gap had closed, fantastic effort by the chasing

:43:13. > :43:18.pack. Certainly the speed at the front was very fast. We will find

:43:19. > :43:22.out in a minute. 37 seconds at the end of Lap 1. Actually we will not

:43:23. > :43:32.find out. We are not getting any time checks. We missed it. The chase

:43:33. > :43:37.group contains Mario Mola. And we think possibly Richard Murray

:43:38. > :43:38.although we have not had confirmation of that. Alistair

:43:39. > :43:43.although we have not had Brownlee back in the pack now.

:43:44. > :43:48.Unusual to see him loitering at the back, taking it easy. Loafing about

:43:49. > :43:52.by his standards. His younger brother taking it up. You right, the

:43:53. > :43:59.gap is significantly lower, 37 seconds, there is one rider between

:44:00. > :44:07.the chasers and the leaders. I think it is problem down to under 30

:44:08. > :44:14.seconds now. -- probably. Possibly 20 seconds. There is Mario Mola. Our

:44:15. > :44:18.first look at him. As the leaders make their way. They still ride this

:44:19. > :44:27.intersection. Watching that I think the lead is as you say well under

:44:28. > :44:33.half a minute. The pace has come down dramatically as they complete

:44:34. > :44:38.Lap 3. And there will not be much time difference between them at the

:44:39. > :44:45.moment. Jonathan Brownlee hits the front the cuts the time at the end

:44:46. > :45:04.of Lap 3 with three short laps to go. The numbers have swollen to 22

:45:05. > :45:12.in the lead group, and just 15 seconds to the chasers. Confirming

:45:13. > :45:19.Mario Mola is in the chasing group. Right at the front of it along with

:45:20. > :45:27.Brendan Sexton of Australia. Jonathan Brownlee can win the world

:45:28. > :45:30.title today, if he wins and Javier Gomez finishes worse than first,

:45:31. > :45:41.that is what Jonathan Brownlee needs to happen. -- worse than fifth.

:45:42. > :45:44.Gomez needs to finish between first and fourth, irrespective of what

:45:45. > :45:52.happens to his competitors, and the title will be his. Whatever the

:45:53. > :45:56.outcome we know that Javier Gomez, Mario Mola, Alistair and Johnny,

:45:57. > :46:06.they will be wanting to win this final race just for its own worth.

:46:07. > :46:16.We think we can write the script, but sometimes it plays tricks on us.

:46:17. > :46:22.They are on the bridge again. They will turn and head back quickly to

:46:23. > :46:39.the south side of the river. That is all there is no between the

:46:40. > :46:52.leaders and the chasers. Probably no more than 13, 14 seconds. This is

:46:53. > :47:08.the fourth lap of six, they are on the short laps now.

:47:09. > :47:16.Big decisions to be made up in the front group, are they going to be

:47:17. > :47:20.content to just ease off, take the chance, possibility of faster

:47:21. > :47:24.runners in the chasing group, to be getting back up to them, or do they

:47:25. > :47:30.think, I just need to save my legs for the final ten kilometres. Well

:47:31. > :47:36.anybody be brave enough to try and make another break from the front?

:47:37. > :47:40.This is a man who almost certainly go into the 2015 season as the

:47:41. > :47:44.defending champion of the world, looking for his fourth, shouting at

:47:45. > :47:53.the Norwegian in front of him to get out of the way.

:47:54. > :47:58.He has been dynamic, the first time we have really seen him in the front

:47:59. > :48:05.pack, he has done more than his fair share of work with the leaders.

:48:06. > :48:15.Alistair is once again having a little goal at the front. Trying to

:48:16. > :48:20.shake things up slightly. He has got enough space for the motorcycle

:48:21. > :48:26.camera to drop in behind. At the end of the fourth lap we have an man on

:48:27. > :48:29.his own, the Olympic and Commonwealth champion Alistair

:48:30. > :48:30.Brownlee leading them into transition to complete the fourth

:48:31. > :49:11.lap with two to go. A gap of just eight seconds to Mario

:49:12. > :49:15.Mola, only eight seconds between the leaders and the chasers. It is

:49:16. > :49:19.almost certain that by the time the bike is complete we will have all

:49:20. > :49:25.three men who can theoretically win the world title involved in the

:49:26. > :49:30.final ten kilometre race. Still, still, still, Alistair keeps looking

:49:31. > :49:36.to see if he can get away. Some hesitation there, well anybody be

:49:37. > :49:40.willing to take it on? Nobody wants to connect if it means going by

:49:41. > :49:41.themselves, they want to have somebody going along with them. --

:49:42. > :50:00.wants to 15 seconds of fame for Ronaldo

:50:01. > :50:04.Colucci of Brazil. Brownlee having a word with him as he goes past,

:50:05. > :50:07.saying that this is the sort of pace that we need. Can Reinaldo Colucci

:50:08. > :50:14.match him? The Brazilian is going that we need. Can Reinaldo Colucci

:50:15. > :50:22.at the moment. Everybody sitting up at the back. It is like a Tour de

:50:23. > :50:25.France protest today isn't it? Sometimes we get those when the

:50:26. > :50:32.riders are unhappy about something and they go at a snails pace in some

:50:33. > :50:48.form of silent protest. Looking a bit like that here, no real pace.

:50:49. > :50:55.Reinaldo Colucci should be on for a personal best. You would think it is

:50:56. > :50:59.almost brinksmanship in the chasing pack, everybody saying they will not

:51:00. > :51:05.take responsibility and do the work so they are effectively handing it

:51:06. > :51:10.to these three, we don't know, we have not seen the other two running

:51:11. > :51:24.at the top level. They will take the bail here. -- the

:51:25. > :51:33.we thought the gap to the chasers was around 30 seconds. We will find

:51:34. > :51:39.out shortly how much it is. No sign of them yet, getting towards 30. It

:51:40. > :51:45.is going to be more than 30 seconds, it might be closer to 45 seconds,

:51:46. > :51:53.the gap between the leading breakaway three and the rest of the

:51:54. > :51:55.field. That gap has opened in less than five kilometres, that was

:51:56. > :52:02.approaching halfway through the lap when they went for the attack. It is

:52:03. > :52:08.close to a minute, if not beyond. No, under a minute, but still

:52:09. > :52:16.significant lead. Only just under a minute, 58 seconds between the

:52:17. > :52:26.leading free and the rest of them. -- leading three. With that sort of

:52:27. > :52:37.gap now, Richard Murray, Mario Mola, can the close that down? Not over

:52:38. > :52:42.five kilometres they cannot, no. Javier Gomez needs to finish in the

:52:43. > :52:46.top four to win, Jonathan Brownlee's only chance is if he

:52:47. > :52:57.wins, which looks unlikely now, and Gomez finishes fifth or below. A

:52:58. > :53:05.huge gap between the leading breakaway three and the chasing

:53:06. > :53:09.group. If the pace continues, the different pace in the two groups,

:53:10. > :53:11.that is going to be over a minute and a half as we get onto the ten

:53:12. > :53:30.kilometre run. Reinaldo Colucci perhaps now just

:53:31. > :53:36.taking a little bit of respite. Allowing the other men to do the

:53:37. > :53:42.work. Tail end of the bike now, just about 1800 metres to ride, they will

:53:43. > :53:49.start thinking about transition, getting in and out quickly. It is

:53:50. > :53:56.going to be a very exciting transition, perhaps not for these

:53:57. > :54:04.three, but for the big chasing pack. Possibly 35, 40 all in that pack

:54:05. > :54:06.coming in together. The Brazilian with his right hand down to prepare

:54:07. > :54:23.his shoes for arrival. Reinaldo Colucci parks his bike,

:54:24. > :54:25.three different areas of the transition for these three

:54:26. > :54:32.triathletes. Alistair Brownlee near the front. Helmet off, running shoes

:54:33. > :54:43.on, he will be the first to break. Out in tandem with Kristian

:54:44. > :54:49.Blummenfelt of Norway. The three men who made the break on the bike, now

:54:50. > :54:56.the first to leave transition after 43.2 kilometres on two wheels.

:54:57. > :54:59.Meanwhile the chasers are easing along, somebody has gone away from

:55:00. > :55:05.the front of the group, we cannot tell you who that we will find out

:55:06. > :55:09.soon. I wonder if it's one of the contenders? You would think if it

:55:10. > :55:13.was then the other one or the other two would have gone with him. There

:55:14. > :55:23.is a big group arriving so they will have to watch their step as they

:55:24. > :55:41.head into transition. There is Joe DeSilva towards the back -- Joao

:55:42. > :55:47.Silva. In they come. It is a loss who took the lead this group, and a

:55:48. > :55:55.huge pack of triathletes are arriving -- Miguel Arraiolos. Adam

:55:56. > :56:03.Bowden is a good runner, this could be a breakthrough race for him. He

:56:04. > :56:12.is the man who was first in, Miguel Arraiolos of Portugal. Mario Mola

:56:13. > :56:18.has just gone past the camera and is on his way out. Meanwhile the three

:56:19. > :56:27.leaders are way out in front. Alistair Brownlee has already

:56:28. > :56:34.dropped the other two. The first lap of four. Reinaldo Colucci holding

:56:35. > :56:41.second, he is going to have to dig really deep if he is to hold onto

:56:42. > :56:50.our five position. Meanwhile Jonathan Brownlee is alongside

:56:51. > :57:00.Javier Gomez. Mario Mola is another three seconds back. Gomez and

:57:01. > :57:13.Brownlee coming past another Spaniard, Hernandez.

:57:14. > :57:25.Just got a glimpse of Adam Bowden there, 10th or 12th in the pack. No

:57:26. > :57:32.site of Richard Murray. Alistair Brownlee is our leader. The Olympic

:57:33. > :57:37.and Commonwealth champion, has had one world triathlon series victory,

:57:38. > :57:44.that came in Hamburg. Has not had a fool Olympic distance win at world

:57:45. > :57:47.triathlon level but looks like he might get it today, his lead

:57:48. > :57:57.significant at the end of the bike and he has taken it on. He runs past

:57:58. > :58:00.the chasers, they are heading in one direction,

:58:01. > :58:05.the chasers, they are heading in one towards them

:58:06. > :58:08.the chasers, they are heading in one lap. I don't think even Alistair

:58:09. > :58:13.would have anticipated taking this sort of lead into the final ten

:58:14. > :58:17.kilometres. The break when it came came so late, the time gap opened up

:58:18. > :58:21.very quickly and there was no reaction in the chasing pack and he

:58:22. > :58:26.was able along with his fellow breakaways to stay away, get this

:58:27. > :58:33.huge gap, this huge time gap going into the run. There will be a little

:58:34. > :58:37.race within a race between Jonathan Brownlee and Mario Mola to see who

:58:38. > :58:46.finishes second and third overall in the standings. Coming into today's

:58:47. > :58:54.race they are pretty tight. Jonathan on 3551 points, Mario Mola on 3491

:58:55. > :58:59.points. It is a case of whoever finishes higher, Jonathan or Mario

:59:00. > :59:02.Mola, will take second in the standings. There is a lot that can

:59:03. > :59:06.happen between now and then and what will probably happen is that this

:59:07. > :59:13.man, Alistair Brownlee, will win the final race of the season. Totally in

:59:14. > :59:19.control. The three chasers beginning to break away from the big group

:59:20. > :59:22.that they came in with, but perhaps just stealing our few seconds on

:59:23. > :59:27.Alistair Brownlee but certainly no more than that. He is just a racing

:59:28. > :59:33.animal, whatever tactics will work for you, he does not mind, he will

:59:34. > :59:38.hurt himself, suffer early on and maintain that pain. I know that Non

:59:39. > :59:43.Stanford said that she thinks he is wired differently to everyone else

:59:44. > :59:48.and has the ability to accept anything that anybody throws at him.

:59:49. > :59:52.He has proven that today, one for it right from the front, gotten away

:59:53. > :59:59.from the two breakaways that went with him and coming into the end of

:00:00. > :00:03.Lap 1 he has a big lead. About to complete his first lap of two and a

:00:04. > :00:07.half thousand metres. We will get a check on the

:00:08. > :00:09.half thousand metres. We will get a think Reinaldo Colucci will hold on

:00:10. > :00:14.to second by the end of the first lap, but whether he will be there by

:00:15. > :00:20.the end of the second remains to be seen. Already 15 seconds plus, the

:00:21. > :00:25.lead that Alistair has. As he leaves the transition area again to begin

:00:26. > :00:38.lap two of four. He looks pretty relaxed at this stage. Is The macro

:00:39. > :00:48.is a Jonathan Brownlee Mario Mola heading in the opposite direction.

:00:49. > :00:53.They have yet to arrive in transition. Gomez looking over, I

:00:54. > :00:57.think he was about to take a wrong turn. He saw where Jonathan and

:00:58. > :01:03.Mario Mola were going and decided to follow them. That was a good

:01:04. > :01:11.decision. They go around the end of this glade and follow the cones

:01:12. > :01:20.around and back, not through past the bikes but on the other side of

:01:21. > :01:35.those trees. 32 seconds now is the gap to Coloccini in second. --

:01:36. > :01:42.Reinaldo Colucci. A big performance by him, still the athletes who would

:01:43. > :01:48.hope they would get onto the podium, 45, maybe 50 seconds down.

:01:49. > :01:55.What a gulf in class we are seeing today, Mario Mola, Gomez and Jonny

:01:56. > :01:59.Brownlee out in front. If you had just tuned in your think this is the

:02:00. > :02:02.front, this is the head of the race, these are the leaders. But you have

:02:03. > :02:10.to consider there is one other guy who is 70 Zevon seconds quicker than

:02:11. > :02:14.them. -- 77. It is this man, Olympic and Commonwealth champion Alistair

:02:15. > :02:20.Brownlee, showing that he is in the league of his own. He is hurting, he

:02:21. > :02:27.has decided, he went for it on the bike, and he has just gone into

:02:28. > :02:31.this. So early on this season many people were saying, it is changing,

:02:32. > :02:36.can they hold on, they have been at the top for a long time. He must be

:02:37. > :02:41.delighted to proving everybody wrong. Whatever the situation, what

:02:42. > :02:46.ever the situation. The Commonwealth Games is huge, he would have made a

:02:47. > :02:50.big effort. The can for some down time afterwards but he has not

:02:51. > :03:00.accepted it. He has put himself on the line and at the moment he is

:03:01. > :03:04.proving that he is the best. When we spoke to him earlier this season he

:03:05. > :03:15.said he was not sure what he would do. Maybe he will focus now on

:03:16. > :03:28.defending that Olympic crown in Rio in 2016. The Olympic cycle comes

:03:29. > :03:33.around so quickly. It is a big commitment, the series, it is

:03:34. > :03:38.fantastic. The very top level, but a lot of races and an awful lot of

:03:39. > :03:46.travelling. From what I gather the 20 15th world triathlon series

:03:47. > :03:55.follows a similar course to 2014. Only with one fewer trips across the

:03:56. > :04:01.Atlantic. There is still a race in Auckland. Still a race in Yokohama.

:04:02. > :04:05.There will be another race in Cape Town. Whether there will be a race

:04:06. > :04:12.in Rio remains to be seen. We hope there will be a Hamburg, almost

:04:13. > :04:22.certainly in London race, we are not quite sure when. I think they know

:04:23. > :04:29.where the races will be. We know that the world final will be

:04:30. > :04:35.mid-September, around the 14th and 15th around Chicago. The season will

:04:36. > :04:42.be extended by a couple of weeks. Have a maintaining their second and

:04:43. > :05:01.third positions? Alistair Brownlee not far away from halfway mark.

:05:02. > :05:07.Never looks like he is enjoying his running. In his interview, two

:05:08. > :05:16.minutes after he has finished, he looks as fresh as a daisy.

:05:17. > :05:21.Incredible ability to recover. He is maintaining the form, maintaining

:05:22. > :05:29.cadence, no slowing down. He has gone into this race with such a

:05:30. > :05:33.positive attitude. There is Reinaldo Colucci, has he maintained his

:05:34. > :05:40.second place. I think so, the gap was 32 seconds and the end of the

:05:41. > :05:46.first lap. I am sure it will have grown that he will still hold second

:05:47. > :05:51.place. The Brazilian now working really hard. What will be the gap

:05:52. > :06:04.back to Mario Mola, Brownlee and Gomez? Alistair is almost halfway

:06:05. > :06:09.through his ten kilometre run, meanwhile the chasers, Gomez the

:06:10. > :06:17.world champion in waiting, and Alistair Brownlee's younger brother

:06:18. > :06:21.Jonathan and Mario Mola of Spain, the winner of the London event in

:06:22. > :06:36.May, still working their way through the field. A surge from Javier

:06:37. > :06:44.Gomez, Mario Mola losing the stride but working his way back. His speed

:06:45. > :06:59.across the ground fluctuating between 18, 19, 20 kph. If I'm doing

:07:00. > :07:05.my son is right and he is that pays, that is under 30 minutes for ten

:07:06. > :07:11.kilometres, you would not believe it with the amount of work that is done

:07:12. > :07:20.in the final section of the bike. The chasers still 67 seconds behind.

:07:21. > :07:36.They have managed to close the gap fractionally. That would seem to

:07:37. > :07:45.point to the Ritchie -- Reinaldo Colucci. CFE has maintained second

:07:46. > :07:50.place. This time last week it would have been over after five kilometres

:07:51. > :08:02.but it is Olympic distance here at the grand finale in Edmonton so he

:08:03. > :08:12.still has five kilometres to go. He starts his third and penultimate

:08:13. > :08:33.lap. Let's see who is next in the transition. Although we did not see

:08:34. > :08:41.the moment they passed Colucci we will assume they have passed him. I

:08:42. > :08:46.wonder, I think the time gap is one minutes, but there is Colucci. He is

:08:47. > :08:53.still there, we have only just seen him. He has done well, holding on

:08:54. > :08:58.the 5000 metres. He was 32 seconds behind at the end of Lap 1, he is 59

:08:59. > :09:00.seconds behind at the end of Lap 2 and will shortly either be going

:09:01. > :09:04.backwards or joining in with and will shortly either be going

:09:05. > :09:13.Brownlee Junior and Mario Mola. He must be hoping that he can maintain

:09:14. > :09:27.his pace to an extent and get in the top five. Kristian Blummenfelt down

:09:28. > :09:37.the 13th position. The third member of the Edmonton three, those three

:09:38. > :09:42.who broke away on the bike. Alistair on his way, Lap 3. Less than five km

:09:43. > :10:01.to run. , a pack of guys coming through.

:10:02. > :10:11.Adam Bowers of Great Britain. The group of about 12 out of transition

:10:12. > :10:15.at the end of the second lap. Does that put Adam Brown done at the head

:10:16. > :10:32.of the group chasing down those three? A bit of a look behind the

:10:33. > :10:37.first time from Alistair Brownlee. A look at and bowed, his best result

:10:38. > :10:49.was in Chicago. Round four, when he was seven. And the gap that Alistair

:10:50. > :10:59.has over the chasing trio. Now just over one minute. Good crowds out

:11:00. > :11:08.today. Lining pretty much every step of the cause. He will get the

:11:09. > :11:15.eyeball his opposite numbers as they come in one direction. They will be

:11:16. > :11:19.on their way across the first bridge before they turn. Alistair

:11:20. > :11:28.on their way across the first bridge on his way back. He has a lead of 63

:11:29. > :11:42.seconds over the chasers. There is the turning point. He will have to

:11:43. > :11:49.do that one more time. And now as he turns, we will get an indication of

:11:50. > :11:57.how big his leaders. Waiting perhaps to sea Colucci, perhaps his brother.

:11:58. > :12:07.And of course Gomez and Mario Mola, has Mario Mola managed to maintain

:12:08. > :12:12.contact? And there they go. Colucci has not stayed with them, there he

:12:13. > :12:23.is going past now. He got dropped by those three. It look like an

:12:24. > :12:32.Australian vest, so the hearts the top five is not to be today. Twice

:12:33. > :12:36.world champion, Olympic champion and Commonwealth champion in Glasgow in

:12:37. > :12:41.July. In fact two Gold, the individual Commonwealth golds in the

:12:42. > :12:47.Strathclyde Country Park and then teamed up with his brother and

:12:48. > :12:59.holder and Stimpson to win the team gold over the mixed relay for

:13:00. > :13:05.England, racing for England. We are being told that the speed of

:13:06. > :13:14.Alistair's running has dropped away a little. Perhaps he's going up a

:13:15. > :13:23.slight incline. We thought he might be able to win this running at 80%.

:13:24. > :13:36.Certainly not travelling at full race pace. He will have just 2.5 km

:13:37. > :13:39.to win this final race. That is the man who barring some sort of

:13:40. > :13:54.disaster will be crowned world champion today. Jonathan Brownlee

:13:55. > :14:06.currently second, Mario Mola in third. Alistair Brownlee coming up

:14:07. > :14:19.to lap Yuichi Hosoda of Japan. Will he take any water? He takes a bottle

:14:20. > :14:26.for a shower rather than the drink. Just 500 metres of this third lap

:14:27. > :14:28.the race and then it will be Alistair Brownlee first to take the

:14:29. > :14:46.bowel. -- Bell. If you were with us last week in

:14:47. > :14:52.Stockholm, you may have seen the personal best performance from the

:14:53. > :14:56.German, if you are wondering what happened to him today, I can tell

:14:57. > :15:03.you he dropped out at the end of the first lap, Gregor Buchholz. That

:15:04. > :15:13.podium place in Stockholm catching up with him here in Edmonton. Almost

:15:14. > :15:17.at the end of the third lap, a sea of blue. Alistair will be turning

:15:18. > :15:24.left into transition, taking the applause of the crowd. Then

:15:25. > :15:28.everybody, as indeed we will be, looking to see what the time

:15:29. > :15:33.difference is going into the final two and a half kilometres. Alistair

:15:34. > :15:44.Brownlee takes the applause, and appreciative applause it is as well.

:15:45. > :15:59.He has two and a half thousand metres to run. One hour, 40 minutes

:16:00. > :16:03.and 47 seconds of effort so far. He has already ran seven and a half

:16:04. > :16:14.thousand metres, 2.5 kilometres to go. We know that he was about 59

:16:15. > :16:19.seconds ahead of these three. At the end of the second lap. At the end of

:16:20. > :16:24.the third lap, looks to be a similar advantage that Alistair has over

:16:25. > :16:31.Gomez, his younger brother, and Mario Mola. It is just nine seconds,

:16:32. > :16:39.nine seconds is all they have been able to find. Javier Gomez grits his

:16:40. > :16:42.teeth and tries to kick clear of Jonathan Brownlee. A familiar

:16:43. > :16:48.position this, for Jonathan Brownlee, shadowing Javier Gomez.

:16:49. > :16:53.They have had a couple of big finishes so far this season and

:16:54. > :16:58.Mario Mola has been involved in plenty of those races for victory

:16:59. > :17:03.throughout the 2014 world triathlon series. It is all about second,

:17:04. > :17:05.third and fourth today. Ohmae 's can finish in any one of those positions

:17:06. > :17:19.and still win the title. Bash Mac Jonathan is covering everything as

:17:20. > :17:28.is Mario Mola. He will have to maintain that surge, if he is to get

:17:29. > :17:35.away, if you possibly can. But up at the front Alistair Brownlee still

:17:36. > :17:38.with that lead, there goes Gomez again. Is that Jonathan Brownlee

:17:39. > :17:46.just beginning to drop away from the group for the first time?

:17:47. > :17:57.Gomez and Mario Mola are leaving Jonathan Brownlee, he cannot stay

:17:58. > :18:01.with them for the moment. As he watches him go, he might well be

:18:02. > :18:07.watching his second place in the world triathlon standings go away

:18:08. > :18:12.from him as well. The two Spaniards are off and running. Alistair

:18:13. > :18:17.Brownlee is deep on his final lap now. He will get to the first part

:18:18. > :18:23.of the bridge, make the turn and then head for home. Another world

:18:24. > :18:27.triathlon series victory. Javier Gomez is the world champion in

:18:28. > :18:36.waiting. Might well be involved in a sprint finish here with Mario Mola,

:18:37. > :18:42.his compatriot. They had a sprint in Yokohama, Gomez getting the better

:18:43. > :18:52.of Mario Mola on that occasion. Mario Mola will be hoping for some

:18:53. > :18:58.measure of revenge. But whether Gomez finishes second or third he

:18:59. > :19:02.will get the world title. But there is a significant prize money

:19:03. > :19:08.difference between second and third, so it is not just about the world

:19:09. > :19:15.title, about the points. They have established a gap now over Jonny

:19:16. > :19:24.Brownlee. Alistair Brownlee lapping some of the backmarkers. Yes, that

:19:25. > :19:29.is not the first. He now knows that the final stage of this triathlon is

:19:30. > :19:36.upon him. He makes the turn and heads for home. Mario Mola and Gomez

:19:37. > :19:43.have left Jonathan Brownlee behind. Alistair will see Jonathan pushed

:19:44. > :19:52.back down to fourth as he runs past them in a second to. Mario Mola

:19:53. > :19:55.seems content to force the pace. He sees his younger brother, having

:19:56. > :20:00.been dropped sees his younger brother, having

:20:01. > :20:05.Mola. Alistair 's lead is sufficient, he is safe in first

:20:06. > :20:14.position. Victory is his for the taking now in Edmonton. Into the

:20:15. > :20:21.final few minutes now. The last half of the final lap and a gap of just

:20:22. > :20:28.under 40 seconds. That will not be closed in the final kilometre. He is

:20:29. > :20:34.grimacing, gardening, gritting his teeth and getting on with it,

:20:35. > :20:40.hurting now. I imagine he will be happy to see the end of this

:20:41. > :20:45.season, a chance to regroup and decide what he is going to do in

:20:46. > :20:51.2015. And between now and the start of the 2015 campaign. I am sure

:20:52. > :20:54.there will be plenty of offers of appearance fees here there and

:20:55. > :21:01.everywhere. Meanwhile the small matter of the world triathlon series

:21:02. > :21:07.title is to be decided. Gomez and Mario Mola. At the start of this

:21:08. > :21:11.race Mario Mola could mathematically still win this title but that is not

:21:12. > :21:21.possible now unless Gomez suddenly claps easier. -- collapses here.

:21:22. > :21:27.Gomez has covered everything, moved up to the shoulder of Mario Mola and

:21:28. > :21:31.now can we see an attack? Mario Mola is reacting to everything, now he

:21:32. > :21:49.comes level, the Spaniards shoulder to shoulder. Alistair Brownlee. He

:21:50. > :21:53.can afford to ease up, he might slow right down to walking pace, he

:21:54. > :21:58.sometimes does that when he has victory guaranteed. He has come back

:21:59. > :22:07.another of the backmarkers, Danilo Pimentel of Brazil. The gap closing,

:22:08. > :22:11.down to 33 seconds, getting closer all the time between Alistair

:22:12. > :22:14.Brownlee and the Spanish pair. Alistair Brownlee has enough

:22:15. > :22:21.distance between himself and Gomez and Mario Mola to be sure of taking

:22:22. > :22:26.victory here in Edmonton this afternoon. It will only be his

:22:27. > :22:31.second win of the world triathlon series of 2014 following the sprint

:22:32. > :22:41.victory that he enjoyed in Hamburg last month. Glances over his

:22:42. > :22:45.shoulder, just to be sure. He knows that the man behind him is a

:22:46. > :22:53.backmarkers and poses no threat. The Spanish pair are sufficiently

:22:54. > :23:00.removed from Alistair for him to enjoy the final turn and a run for

:23:01. > :23:05.home. Looks like yet another backmarkers will be taken just

:23:06. > :23:10.before the finish. Big effort from Mario Mola, trying to get away from

:23:11. > :23:16.Gomez but he covers again. Mario Mola holding on but Gomez getting

:23:17. > :23:19.back onto his shoulder. We might see a sprint finish between the

:23:20. > :23:24.Spaniards but it would be for the victory, it will be for second.

:23:25. > :23:28.Alistair Brownlee starts to enjoy the moment, it was a race he

:23:29. > :23:34.dictated on his own terms from the moment he claimed on his bike. He is

:23:35. > :23:38.looking for a flag, he has got a couple. Alistair Brownlee eases off

:23:39. > :23:44.the pace, gets himself down to a nice comfortable jog towards the

:23:45. > :23:49.line. Catches his breath and soaks it up. The final of the world

:23:50. > :23:56.triathlon series is won by Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain. What a

:23:57. > :24:00.time, one hour 48 minutes 44 seconds. The battle for second place

:24:01. > :24:06.is on between the two Spaniards, Mario Mola looks like he will get

:24:07. > :24:11.second, but it is Javier Gomez who will celebrate. Mario Mola saying

:24:12. > :24:24.that he is the man, he is the world champion, Javier Gomez win 's his

:24:25. > :24:27.fourth world title. Alistair Brownlee watches his younger brother

:24:28. > :24:33.Jonathan come home in fourth which means that he will finish in third

:24:34. > :24:38.in the overall standings. The effort that Alistair Putin is plain to see.

:24:39. > :24:44.A handshake between the two great rivals. There he is, the new

:24:45. > :24:51.champion of the world, Javier Gomez Noya of Spain. The Brownlee brothers

:24:52. > :24:59.happy to sit in the shade, discuss what happened and rehydrate.

:25:00. > :25:01.Confirmation of the final results of the Edmonton triathlon. Alistair

:25:02. > :25:08.Brownlee winning ahead of Mario Mola, Javier Gomez takes the world

:25:09. > :25:15.title in third place, Jonathan Brownlee in fourth. Adam Bowden was

:25:16. > :25:20.12th with David McNamee 14th. The first priority was to try and get

:25:21. > :25:27.Johnny away from have a to win the world title but that did not work

:25:28. > :25:31.out. I just got really lucky with the break, got round and I couldn't

:25:32. > :25:37.believe it when I saw 70 seconds on the time board. It was a stroke of

:25:38. > :25:41.luck and I just had to hold on. The Brownlee brothers tried their best,

:25:42. > :25:45.aggressive, trying to break away, a lot of people working for them. I

:25:46. > :25:51.just had to be with Jonny Brownlee the whole time. I just tried to

:25:52. > :25:57.raise smart and save energy for the run. I am lucky I could have a

:25:58. > :26:02.consistent run and secure the title. I knew that if I was able to beat

:26:03. > :26:07.Jonny Brownlee I would get second position overall so I enjoy it, he

:26:08. > :26:11.is a great athlete, I have a lot of respect for him but in the race we

:26:12. > :26:14.try to beat each other in every race will stop this time I could get the

:26:15. > :26:19.victory so I am very happy with that. We went for the victory in the

:26:20. > :26:26.series, I have been else and is a stock home, dodgy stomach, I just

:26:27. > :26:30.felt really weak. I could tell that from my first stroke. But we give it

:26:31. > :26:33.our best on the bike to try to win the championship, I could have

:26:34. > :26:40.settled for second by pushing that group on but we tried to drop Javier

:26:41. > :26:44.Gomez and it did not work. It cost me second in the series but that is

:26:45. > :26:48.all right, I am not going to settle for second, but third not bad. It

:26:49. > :26:57.has been an amazing year, getting the title with the last race. I got

:26:58. > :27:01.sick and stock, and I was not sure about how fit I was going to be

:27:02. > :27:06.today that I give it my best. It was a tactical race and I am happy for

:27:07. > :27:13.Marriott, he got second, he is a nice guy. He was better than me,

:27:14. > :27:18.their play to him, we give it a good go on the bike, he followed me over

:27:19. > :27:22.everything. He is a good world champion this year, he started well,

:27:23. > :27:32.I was on the back foot from the start. I give it a good go to close

:27:33. > :27:38.him down,. Pretty happy really. It has not been the best season but I

:27:39. > :27:47.have won all the big races so I cant complain too much. Javier Gomez Noya

:27:48. > :27:48.has taken his fourth world title. Mario Mola finishes second and then

:27:49. > :28:00.the brothers. A well-deserved victory for Alistair

:28:01. > :28:09.Brownlee here today, congratulations to Javier Gomez on his fourth world

:28:10. > :28:12.title. Thank you so much for your company all season, it is goodbye

:28:13. > :28:30.from the grand final here in Edmonton.

:28:31. > :29:25.This year, the world's greatest half-marathon
