:00:46. > :00:57.race of the 2014 world triathlon series.
:00:58. > :01:05.will take place over back-to-back weekends. It is about banking as
:01:06. > :01:09.many points as possible before the final in Edmonton when the world
:01:10. > :01:13.champion will be crowned. For the third time this year the competition
:01:14. > :01:19.will be over the shortest sprint distance. The men are hard first and
:01:20. > :01:23.if the previous two sprints are anything to go by, it is likely to
:01:24. > :01:27.be spectacular. Setting a fast and furious pace.
:01:28. > :01:39.Everyone is in and Setting a fast and furious pace.
:01:40. > :01:44.this. Murray and Mario Mola Setting a fast and furious pace.
:01:45. > :01:50.gather! Murray takes the win with Setting a fast and furious pace.
:01:51. > :01:58.brilliant sprint finish. Tens of thousands outlining the streets of
:01:59. > :02:02.Hamburg. Alistair Brownlee is kicking away! And he takes the win
:02:03. > :02:07.in hamburg. Even before that win, Olympic
:02:08. > :02:13.champion Alistair Brownlee Even before that win, Olympic
:02:14. > :02:17.could not become world champion this year. An early-season injury meant
:02:18. > :02:19.he was not able to compete in enough races. The Commonwealth Games had to
:02:20. > :02:28.become his top priority. Alistair Brownlee, the Olympic
:02:29. > :02:32.champion, is now the Commonwealth champion as well.
:02:33. > :02:39.Did you have this huge sense of relief crossing the line? Not so
:02:40. > :02:44.much relief. I didn't really feel that pressure to do it, it was
:02:45. > :02:48.moored that I just wanted to do it. I wanted to go out and race as well
:02:49. > :02:52.as I could, have a good race, because I had not really raced that
:02:53. > :02:57.well that year. I was happy to perform on the day. I had a couple
:02:58. > :03:05.of easy weeks up in Glasgow and a couple of good weeks of training.
:03:06. > :03:08.Hopefully I have not lost much and managed to push on a bit. Stockholm
:03:09. > :03:15.is a great course and Edmonton should be very good as well. What
:03:16. > :03:19.has this year taught you about winning the world title again?
:03:20. > :03:23.Winning the world title and the World Series has changed quite a lot
:03:24. > :03:27.in the last few years. You can't just rocked up in May or June and
:03:28. > :03:32.start racing. You have to race early and you probably have to do most of
:03:33. > :03:36.the races. If you want to commit to do the World Series, which I'm not
:03:37. > :03:41.entirely sure I want to do, it is a tough thing and I'm not sure it is
:03:42. > :03:45.worth it. Are you saying you will provide the not try to become world
:03:46. > :03:50.champion in this distance again? Never say never to it I suppose, but
:03:51. > :03:54.with the World Championship as it is with so many races around the world,
:03:55. > :03:59.having to race so early in the year, it is difficult to do. Until the
:04:00. > :04:02.World Series changes to a more sensible format, five or six races
:04:03. > :04:08.with a bit less travelling involved, I probably won't chase it.
:04:09. > :04:19.Some people will ask why it is difficult for the you to do if
:04:20. > :04:23.someone like Javier Gomez can do it? He is prepared to travel for a lot
:04:24. > :04:29.of time away from home. It is a choice of do I want to race in the
:04:30. > :04:35.World Series and be subpar all year and race lots of knee jerk races, or
:04:36. > :04:38.do I want to erase the best I possibly can be? For me it is not
:04:39. > :04:41.about travelling to the other side of the world in the middle of
:04:42. > :04:48.winter. I'm all about getting the most out of myself as an athlete.
:04:49. > :04:56.How do you approach Stockholm? It is nice because I can just go out and
:04:57. > :05:01.race well in the series. I have got Johnny to consider. Johnny really
:05:02. > :05:06.needs to win here in Stockholm. What happens if both of you are in the
:05:07. > :05:11.lead, do you go to the win yourself? I would never purposefully give him
:05:12. > :05:15.the win. But if we were both there and it made a big difference to him,
:05:16. > :05:22.maybe that would give him extra motivation to out sprint me. Can
:05:23. > :05:27.Javier Gomez be stopped from winning his fourth world title? He probably
:05:28. > :05:34.needs to crash to be honest. I suppose he can be. We have seen
:05:35. > :05:38.before where people have had bad races. He has been going very hard
:05:39. > :05:46.since early in the year, so we will see. That is Alistair's view on this
:05:47. > :05:52.weekend's race and the World Series as a whole. Current world champion
:05:53. > :05:56.Javier Gomez has certainly raised savvy this year, putting himself in
:05:57. > :06:01.a good position to win his fourth world title.
:06:02. > :06:10.It is an athlete's five best results that count towards their ultimate
:06:11. > :06:17.ranking. A win earns you 800 points but in the grand final it is 1200.
:06:18. > :06:24.Javier Gomez already has four victories. Yet another win for the
:06:25. > :06:31.Spaniard. He has done it in style in Chicago. Tellingly, he has not even
:06:32. > :06:35.made the podium in the two sprint races so far. It will be very
:06:36. > :06:38.difficult to stop him retaining his title. But the sprint specialists
:06:39. > :06:44.have an opportunity here in the Swedish capital. One of them, Mario
:06:45. > :06:49.Mola, is the only other winner of a World Series triathlon race this
:06:50. > :06:53.year, besides Javier Gomez and Alistair. But he will be tested over
:06:54. > :06:58.the hilly and technically demanding course. Ahead of Mario Mola is
:06:59. > :07:02.Jonathan Brownlee. It has been a disappointing season by his high
:07:03. > :07:07.standards. He has not won a race all year. But he did win Stockholm's
:07:08. > :07:11.sprint two years ago. A victory here would give him enough points to
:07:12. > :07:18.stand a chance of becoming world champion, but he would need to win
:07:19. > :07:25.the grand final too, and to count on Javier Gomez finishing outside the
:07:26. > :07:28.top three here and the top five in Edmonton. The water is very choppy
:07:29. > :07:33.and the cobbled streets out there will be very slippery. Let's see if
:07:34. > :07:37.Johnny Brownlee can keep himself in the hunt for the world title.
:07:38. > :07:45.COMMENTATOR: The beautiful Swedish city of Stockholm, playing host once
:07:46. > :07:51.again to the WTF, the world triathlon series. It is a sprint
:07:52. > :08:00.distance this year. Our umbrellas and ponchos out, very unseasonable
:08:01. > :08:07.today. One lap in the water. Into transition, pick up the bikes, five
:08:08. > :08:12.laps of four kilometres each to conclude the 20 kilometre second
:08:13. > :08:18.stage on two wheels. When they return to transition fire a couple
:08:19. > :08:24.of trips out and back past these Swedish Parliament house, and then
:08:25. > :08:30.the run. Two laps of 2.25 kilometres each, so a total of 750 kilometres
:08:31. > :08:35.in the water, 20 kilometre on two wheels, and a five kilometre run to
:08:36. > :08:41.round things off. All the main contenders are involved. Javier
:08:42. > :08:48.Gomez wears number one. Alistair Brownlee wears number eight. They
:08:49. > :09:00.are ready to go and they are into the cold waters. In Stockholm. They
:09:01. > :09:05.are in a huge freshwater lake upon which sits this magnificent Swedish
:09:06. > :09:09.city. The waters from the lake flow out into the Baltic Sea. I can tell
:09:10. > :09:14.you that conditions here are Baltic today. Wet suits for the swim and it
:09:15. > :09:19.will be chilly and difficult on the bike, and the water is very choppy
:09:20. > :09:24.here in Stockholm as well. Very choppy. The first thing we're
:09:25. > :09:29.looking at is how high the recovery of the arms are on this swim. You
:09:30. > :09:35.don't normally see the pack spreading out so much so quickly.
:09:36. > :09:37.I'm not too sure how well Jonathan Brownlee has
:09:38. > :09:43.I'm not too sure how well Jonathan We will have to see when we see
:09:44. > :09:47.closer up. To me it looks like Gomez and Johnny Brownlee have dropped off
:09:48. > :09:53.a bit. Richard Varga, we have become used to him leading out. He will
:09:54. > :10:01.certainly be up in the lead pack today. 18.8 degrees, the air
:10:02. > :10:05.temperature, which is fairly economical for August, and a chilly
:10:06. > :10:09.15 degrees in the water, as the early pace comes unsurprisingly from
:10:10. > :10:15.the Slovakian swim specialist Richard Varga, wearing number 17. He
:10:16. > :10:21.has done a lot of training over the past two or three-year is with the
:10:22. > :10:29.Brownlee brothers. He is a good training partner for them because he
:10:30. > :10:32.is such a strong swimmer. He has improved his running and cycling
:10:33. > :10:40.considerably in the last couple of years. Brownlee forcing the pace.
:10:41. > :10:46.Look out for Aurelien Raphael, the Frenchman, with number 15. One lap
:10:47. > :10:52.only in the freshwater here in Stockholm. A 750 metres swim
:10:53. > :10:56.followed by five laps of four kilometres on two wheels for a 20 K
:10:57. > :11:05.bike, and then a five kilometre run to finish off this penultimate stop
:11:06. > :11:10.of the world triathlon series for 2014, before they cross the Atlantic
:11:11. > :11:17.to head to the grand final in Edmonton. No tactics here. The only
:11:18. > :11:23.tactic Richard Varga has gone for is to go flat out from the front. It
:11:24. > :11:27.looks like he's trying to break the field early on. He is putting
:11:28. > :11:31.distance between himself and the chasers, and they are having to work
:11:32. > :11:33.so hard to stay with him. In the choppy conditions, they are looking
:11:34. > :11:38.up far more than they normally would. Normally they would be
:11:39. > :11:41.looking at the feet of the swimmer in front, trying to get onto him and
:11:42. > :11:48.take the draft effect from that, today they are having to look up to
:11:49. > :11:50.take the shortest line possible. Somebody getting caught on the loose
:11:51. > :11:53.rope, and I wonder if Somebody getting caught on the loose
:11:54. > :11:57.down to the conditions today. The loose rope thankfully not attached
:11:58. > :12:01.to anything, otherwise somebody could have got anchored down there,
:12:02. > :12:06.but it just came off the shoulder of the swimmer as they went through the
:12:07. > :12:10.turn. Around the two giant inflatables as
:12:11. > :12:12.turn. Around the two giant towards the starting point, with a
:12:13. > :12:17.ferocious pace being injected into the first stage of this triathlon by
:12:18. > :12:23.Richard Varga, the Slovakian, very much at home here.
:12:24. > :12:28.Richard Varga, the Slovakian, very cold conditions. Just under eight
:12:29. > :12:32.Richard Varga of Slovakia has led from start to finish. He makes this
:12:33. > :12:34.final short left hand turn and then heads towards the ramp, which takes
:12:35. > :12:40.him out of the water and back for heads towards the ramp, which takes
:12:41. > :12:43.the short run back towards the transition area, where the bikes are
:12:44. > :12:48.parked. We will get a transition area, where the bikes are
:12:49. > :12:55.everybody's standings at the end of the 750 metres swim, as they come up
:12:56. > :12:59.the steps and out of the water. Richard Varga, a little slip and a
:13:00. > :13:05.slide as he starts to prepare for transition. I think it is Alistair
:13:06. > :13:11.Brownlee who has come out in fourth place. They have a stiff climb over
:13:12. > :13:16.the cobbled streets which have been carpeted up into transition. The
:13:17. > :13:19.bike starts on an uphill. Richard Varga is leading Henri Schoeman
:13:20. > :13:24.bike starts on an uphill. Richard Varga is leading Henri of South
:13:25. > :13:28.Africa. It is Johnny Brownlee in fourth place and Alistair not far
:13:29. > :13:31.behind. Both the Brownlee brothers are there or thereabouts. The
:13:32. > :13:38.Olympic champion just arrives ahead of his brother at his bike park.
:13:39. > :13:39.Johnny Brownlee in, putting on his helmet while stepping out of his wet
:13:40. > :13:49.suit. There are lots of guys here. helmet while stepping out of his wet
:13:50. > :14:04.Anthony Varga first to leave the transition. We are looking out for
:14:05. > :14:07.Gomez Noya in Allred. Javier Gomez Noya, out of transition. We will get
:14:08. > :14:12.a decent group Noya, out of transition. We will get
:14:13. > :14:14.of 25 plus riders forming in the first lap. Richard Murray is not far
:14:15. > :14:20.away. He has done well, Commonwealth bronze-medallist. He
:14:21. > :14:26.has not let the swimmers get too far in front. The conditions set
:14:27. > :14:29.themselves up for what could be a very dangerous ride. We have got
:14:30. > :14:35.three breaking away already. Is it very dangerous ride. We have got
:14:36. > :14:45.Richard Varga there as well? That is Alistair wearing number eight. It is
:14:46. > :14:48.both the Brownlee brothers and their training partner Richard Varga. He
:14:49. > :14:53.did the hard work in the water and the brothers are not far behind, it
:14:54. > :14:58.is Varga and the Brownlee brothers leading on the first lap of five on
:14:59. > :15:03.two wheels. Wet underfoot, they will need to mind their peas and queues
:15:04. > :15:08.on the hairpin turns and thereafter three of them really on the course.
:15:09. > :15:13.That is exactly the thing to do, work hard in transition and in the
:15:14. > :15:20.first 200, 300 metres to get away from that huge mass of the pack
:15:21. > :15:23.which can be dangerous. With three riders up there, they know each
:15:24. > :15:27.which can be dangerous. With three and they will be working together to
:15:28. > :15:31.put a lot of distance between themselves and the chasers. They
:15:32. > :15:40.will turn here at City Hall having crossed the second bridge. They will
:15:41. > :15:45.look at this massive group which has formed, the peloton if you like.
:15:46. > :15:56.They will know exactly how far in front they are, roughly how far in
:15:57. > :16:01.front when the groups cross over. They're rather three leaders heading
:16:02. > :16:05.in the opposite direction. Varga is struggling to stay with the Brownlee
:16:06. > :16:12.brothers, they have decided to not wait for the pack to catch them and
:16:13. > :16:17.they move away from Richard Varga. We can see the chasers coming
:16:18. > :16:22.through but the difficulty the big group will have coming through the
:16:23. > :16:27.narrow roads and the corners, that has to slow them down if it is a
:16:28. > :16:34.couple of seconds on each turn, that will grow and grow. The pure
:16:35. > :16:37.logistics of trying to take place at the front and stay in a drafting
:16:38. > :16:42.position is so much more difficult in a big group like this. Assuming
:16:43. > :16:47.the Brownlees state upright, one of them will win this race, I think
:16:48. > :16:53.that is a fair conclusion, even at this stage. Richard Murray is a long
:16:54. > :16:57.way back, Mario Mola is a long way back. These
:16:58. > :17:02.way back, Mario Mola is a long way they need to do and how dangerous it
:17:03. > :17:07.is. A little bit of caution on the corners. More difficult to do in the
:17:08. > :17:12.big pack, being aware of breaking and also of the other athletes. This
:17:13. > :17:16.is just what we want to see because they train together, they race each
:17:17. > :17:20.other. In this situation, they will work together, doing 20 turns at the
:17:21. > :17:24.front, easing up, work together, doing 20 turns at the
:17:25. > :17:29.comes through and they will work together all the way through this
:17:30. > :17:40.bike section and it will be out for the hunting on the run. Javier Gomez
:17:41. > :17:45.is in that group. That is him in about ninth position in the chasing
:17:46. > :17:52.group at this stage, staying out of trouble with the World Triathlon
:17:53. > :17:57.Series title just about wrapped up this season for Javier Gomez. He has
:17:58. > :18:07.won in Auckland, Cape Town, Yokohama, Chicago. Gomez really does
:18:08. > :18:12.not have anything to prove. The sprint distance is never his
:18:13. > :18:15.favourite. He prefers the full Olympic distance and has not won a
:18:16. > :18:20.sprint so far this season. He does not have to work too hard today
:18:21. > :18:24.bearing in mind he has the Olympic distance finale in Edmonton next
:18:25. > :18:34.weekend to seal the World Triathlon Series title for 2014. I think he is
:18:35. > :18:39.maybe feeling a bit supported in the chasing group but also to an element
:18:40. > :18:43.in the comfort zone because he will be confident in his running ability
:18:44. > :18:49.and he does not need to work hard to chase down the Brownlees. That gap
:18:50. > :18:56.has extended out to 17 seconds as become to the end of lap two. At the
:18:57. > :19:02.end of lap one it was 14 seconds, at the end of lap to it will be
:19:03. > :19:10.considerably more. The chasing group have yet to hit the client. Some
:19:11. > :19:17.were close to 30 seconds -- hit the climb. They have just about doubled
:19:18. > :19:23.their lead. 23 seconds in fact as they come up in front of Stockholm
:19:24. > :19:33.Palace, passing the official residence of the King of Sweden. It
:19:34. > :19:40.is a familiar sight. Two of the best in the world. Alistair is probably
:19:41. > :19:44.the best in the world, the Olympic and Commonwealth champion, former
:19:45. > :19:46.world champion. It remains to be seen if he continues to focus on
:19:47. > :19:52.this World Triathlon Series which seen if he continues to focus on
:19:53. > :19:56.crisscrosses the globe. He has made no secret of the fact that he is
:19:57. > :20:00.unhappy with the mileage involved and the endless long haul flights
:20:01. > :20:11.that it takes to compete in all of the Riise 's -- all of the races.
:20:12. > :20:19.Maybe next year, we will see if his focus will be on defending his title
:20:20. > :20:22.in the Olympics in Rio. He may take part in some of the races but I
:20:23. > :20:27.don't think it will take his full attention and commitment. It is not
:20:28. > :20:30.just the races of course, the majority of these athletes will be
:20:31. > :20:36.involved in club situations, many of majority of these athletes will be
:20:37. > :20:42.them competing in the European summer for French clubs. It takes
:20:43. > :20:47.its toll. Alistair has made his decision. You are extending the
:20:48. > :20:51.number of races, there are more qualifying races now and it is a big
:20:52. > :20:57.decision. He said he likes to be fresh and rested. Raphael, one of
:20:58. > :21:02.the strongest swimmers, keeping himself out of trouble at the back
:21:03. > :21:08.of the pack. He has one of the Americans for company, Jefferson,
:21:09. > :21:14.and another one of the Frenchman, Pujades is there as well. The
:21:15. > :21:20.Brownlees stretched their lead to 23 second at the end of lap two, lap
:21:21. > :21:25.three will conclude shortly and we expect it to be closer to 30 seconds
:21:26. > :21:31.which will give them a comfortable conclusion to the bike with two laps
:21:32. > :21:33.to go. The Brownlee brothers are taking no prisoners this afternoon
:21:34. > :21:44.in Stockholm. We are looking back, Javier Gomez
:21:45. > :21:53.does not seem to be enjoying the bike, he was 42 seconds down. What
:21:54. > :21:56.if, what if, maybe we think, if he did not finish and lose the points
:21:57. > :22:01.available, that would be very critical but what if he is a long
:22:02. > :22:07.wait down in the pack? Johnny wants to go for it but he has raced
:22:08. > :22:09.against his brother so many times, I don't think we have seen Alistair
:22:10. > :22:14.backing off if there is an opportunity to win but we are
:22:15. > :22:20.talking about the title. Does that produce another scenario? It does
:22:21. > :22:27.and Jonathan can certainly close the gap on Gomez with a victory today.
:22:28. > :22:33.As Alistair said, all it takes is one bad race and things can change.
:22:34. > :22:43.Johnny will not have given up on the world title ambitions he has for
:22:44. > :22:51.2014. If we look back to last year, one appalling race coming out of the
:22:52. > :22:58.swim can change everything. We have seen Jorgensen in commanding
:22:59. > :23:01.positions and then crashing out and it can change so quickly. Unusual
:23:02. > :23:08.not to see Gomez at the front, we have become used to him being at the
:23:09. > :23:15.front and attacking. Certainly different tactics today. The
:23:16. > :23:20.brothers climb up the hill for the panel to much time, taking the bell
:23:21. > :23:28.with one lap to go. Jonathan crosses the line first, Alistair his older
:23:29. > :23:32.brother in second, the chasing group nowhere to be seen, still on their
:23:33. > :23:41.way back over the bridge towards the Stockholm Palace. 38 seconds at the
:23:42. > :23:49.end of number three. It will be climbing even further now. It really
:23:50. > :23:53.has become two races now, it is Brownlee against roundly and the
:23:54. > :24:03.rest of the world fighting it out for the bronze medal. -- Brownlee
:24:04. > :24:08.against Brownlee. It is 46 seconds officially at the end of lap four.
:24:09. > :24:17.What an effort from the Brownlee brothers, from 14 seconds after lap
:24:18. > :24:25.one up to 40 seconds -- 46 seconds. Magnificent riding.
:24:26. > :24:37.The brothers are not letting up at all, looking the more pace over the
:24:38. > :24:41.last lap. How do they attack this run going out together, knowing they
:24:42. > :24:46.will have a significant lead? We have become used to seeing Alistair
:24:47. > :24:51.and Johnny Brownlee and Javier have become used to seeing Alistair
:24:52. > :24:56.being prepared to put the hammer down for the first step on the run,
:24:57. > :25:00.attack and attack. In this situation, perhaps Alistair and
:25:01. > :25:04.Johnny don't need to do that so will there be a change in tactics? If
:25:05. > :25:12.Johnny Brownlee needs these points, his brother will not give him
:25:13. > :25:17.anything, does he go for it early? He has not had a World Triathlon
:25:18. > :25:24.Series win in 2014. Alistair has had one, Jonathan has been runner-up to
:25:25. > :25:29.Gomez, in Auckland and again in Cape Town, he finished fifth in Yokohama
:25:30. > :25:39.and fifth again over the sprint distance in London. And third behind
:25:40. > :25:46.Alistair and Vincent Luis in hamburg after that sensational sprint
:25:47. > :25:49.finish. Today he will be wanting to put things right and get his first
:25:50. > :25:55.win of the season and head into the grand final in Edmonton with a
:25:56. > :26:00.chance, an outside chance, of overhauling the lead of Javier Gomez
:26:01. > :26:06.in the rankings. The man he has to beat it is older brother and the
:26:07. > :26:12.competitive edge they have between them as a family is extraordinary.
:26:13. > :26:16.Alistair is never particularly them as a family is extraordinary.
:26:17. > :26:25.to Johnny when it comes to sprint finishes, he always wants to beat
:26:26. > :26:28.his younger brother. He is leading them here over the final stages of
:26:29. > :26:32.lap five, they will arrive in them here over the final stages of
:26:33. > :26:37.transition together, it'll be a race between the for victory in
:26:38. > :26:43.Stockholm. The final little out and back here towards the Swedish
:26:44. > :26:53.parliament building and the run for home. Raphael still camped out at
:26:54. > :27:02.the back of the peloton. He has done his work in the water. He has been
:27:03. > :27:09.on the tow for the majority of this 20 Lamah to ride. We started with a
:27:10. > :27:14.750-metre swim, the 20 kilometre bike ride is coming to its
:27:15. > :27:19.conclusion and the race will be won and lost after a five kilometre
:27:20. > :27:24.run, the exciting sprint format of the World Triathlon Series being
:27:25. > :27:32.employed here in Stockholm, as it was in London and in hamburg. The
:27:33. > :27:35.brothers are preparing for transition, the feet are
:27:36. > :27:39.brothers are preparing for shoes and resting gently on top of
:27:40. > :27:45.the pedals. They get to the dismount line and hop off simultaneously,
:27:46. > :27:50.synchronised transition for Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee. They have got
:27:51. > :27:56.to get this bit right, Johnny looks pretty relaxed running up the blue
:27:57. > :28:00.carpet towards his allotted stand where he will need to park his bike
:28:01. > :28:06.and need to make sure his helmet find the plaque stick box, getting
:28:07. > :28:14.his running shoes on quickly and smoothly -- plastic box. They will
:28:15. > :28:18.leave pretty close together but Jonathan just steals march on his
:28:19. > :28:23.brother and Alistair has to head uphill to try to close the gap as
:28:24. > :28:29.Johnny heads out of transition, the younger brother first to break as
:28:30. > :28:34.the pack arrives. They are clipping their shoes and getting ready for
:28:35. > :28:41.transition. Javier Gomez coming up the hill towards the transition
:28:42. > :28:48.area. 46 seconds was the difference at the end of lap four, it has grown
:28:49. > :28:55.even further, 54 seconds by that time they conclude the 20 kilometre
:28:56. > :29:06.ride. You can never say never but almost a minute, they has to be
:29:07. > :29:10.uncatchable. Gomez had a fairly easy bike section. Will he attack from
:29:11. > :29:16.the front? There is Richard Murray, again in front of his compatriot
:29:17. > :29:24.Henri Schoeman. Richard Murray against Javier Gomez could be the
:29:25. > :29:25.one to watch. Jonathan Brownlee is leading Alistair Brownlee. They are
:29:26. > :29:43.moving on at quite a pace here. they going to back off because they
:29:44. > :29:47.were in they going to back off because they
:29:48. > :29:48.could? That doesn't seem to have happened. Jonathan Brownlee
:29:49. > :29:52.could? That doesn't seem to have like a startled pair at the start of
:29:53. > :30:00.that run. -- like a startled hare. like a startled pair at the start of
:30:01. > :30:05.The situation we have seen so many times, the two brothers from Leeds
:30:06. > :30:10.in contention to take this victory. They are running a five-minute mile,
:30:11. > :30:19.that is a tremendous pace, that would be well under 30 minutes if it
:30:20. > :30:26.were a full ten kilometre race. He's just holding his arm, asking the
:30:27. > :30:29.driver camera combination to ease off and get out of his way. No one
:30:30. > :30:45.else inside. -- no one else in sight. Where is
:30:46. > :30:53.Gomez? Gomez isn't there. Certainly Richard Murray was in that... There
:30:54. > :31:01.is Mario Mola coming through. There is Tom Bishop. Javier Gomez Noya is
:31:02. > :31:04.a bit slow to react is Tom Bishop. Javier Gomez Noya is
:31:05. > :31:09.a after transition. Now slowly making their way through the field.
:31:10. > :31:13.Gomez I have to say is further down than I would have anticipated in
:31:14. > :31:19.this situation. A big performance by Tom Bishop there. But how quickly
:31:20. > :31:23.that chasing pack has just stretched and stretched. We know Richard
:31:24. > :31:32.Murray was up there, in the lead three, chasing the two Brownlees.
:31:33. > :31:40.The world number one Javier Gomez of Spain is in about ninth or 10th
:31:41. > :31:48.position. From Ponte Vedra, keen surfer, decent guitarist. Ponte
:31:49. > :31:53.Vedra just north of the border with Portugal. As the Brownlee brothers
:31:54. > :31:58.bounce along, coming up towards 50 minutes since the race began. They
:31:59. > :32:05.are halfway through the run. They climbed the cobbles. Jonathan and
:32:06. > :32:09.Alistair Brownlee are just about shoulder to shoulder, as they come
:32:10. > :32:16.past the bikes they left just a few minutes ago. Alistair takes up first
:32:17. > :32:23.position for the first time. They take the bell. 2.5 kilometre to run.
:32:24. > :32:30.Gomez with work to do. He has got Wilson of Australia not far behind
:32:31. > :32:41.him. That... Henri Schoeman just behind. The leaders of the chase
:32:42. > :32:51.group. Gregor Buchholz coming through for Germany, and Anthony
:32:52. > :32:54.Pujades from France. Richard Murray, the reputation of the
:32:55. > :32:59.strongest runner, but in very different conditions today. 59
:33:00. > :33:03.seconds is different conditions today. 59
:33:04. > :33:10.brothers and the next best, at the end of Lap 1. BELL
:33:11. > :33:15.Now some of the other main end of Lap 1. BELL
:33:16. > :33:21.contenders coming through, as Mario Mola tries to kick away from Joao
:33:22. > :33:26.Pereira, coming up the hill. Dodds of New Zealand. Tom Bishop from
:33:27. > :33:29.Great Britain. And Javier Gomez, the world number one, struggling in
:33:30. > :33:35.these dreadful conditions in Stockholm this afternoon. It looked
:33:36. > :33:42.like a bit of a stretch there from Jonathan. Alistair
:33:43. > :33:45.like a bit of a stretch there from covering. Alistair just seems to be
:33:46. > :33:49.working covering. Alistair just seems to be
:33:50. > :33:53.to be relaxed at the moment, but of course, as we always say,
:33:54. > :34:02.appearances can be so deceptive. Again, I think Richard Murray is
:34:03. > :34:06.looking to attack. He still stays there. Despite Richard Murray trying
:34:07. > :34:12.to attack twice now, not making any inroads at all on this final lap.
:34:13. > :34:19.So, Richard Murray is third. Gregor Buchholz of Germany is in fourth
:34:20. > :34:22.place. Anthony Pujades is in fifth place. Someone is about to join
:34:23. > :34:30.them, is it Joao Pereira of Portugal? He fancies being a part of
:34:31. > :34:34.this race, Joao Pereira. What an effort from him to bridge the gap
:34:35. > :34:40.from six all the way up to join these three who are battling it out
:34:41. > :34:53.to third place. Now we have men pushing for third place in Stockholm
:34:54. > :35:01.here this afternoon. -- now we have four men pushing for third place.
:35:02. > :35:06.Now goes Mario Mola. Mario Mola now trying to join these four. The three
:35:07. > :35:13.become for, and the four become five. It looks like there will be a
:35:14. > :35:17.five way sprint for bronze position -- third position and the bronze
:35:18. > :35:23.medal here in Stockholm. Mario Mola has tasted success in the Sprint or
:35:24. > :35:29.rent -- sprint event already in London so far this season. It is
:35:30. > :35:37.minor places, it is between the brothers for the win, as Jonny takes
:35:38. > :35:42.the hairpin and moves away from Alistair, as they come out of the
:35:43. > :35:47.turn. Just injecting a bit of pace. That slingshot effect we see so
:35:48. > :35:50.often in triathlon, and it was used wisely thereby Jonny Brownlee. We
:35:51. > :35:55.will see if it has been a significant move as we head back to
:35:56. > :36:01.the leaders shortly. Meanwhile we have got Murray, Joao Pereira,
:36:02. > :36:09.Gregor Buchholz, Anthony Pujades, and Mario Mola. Alistair had that
:36:10. > :36:13.break covered. Alistair glanced over to see where Javier Gomez was, and
:36:14. > :36:20.while he took his mind off the task in hand, Jonathan Brownlee moved
:36:21. > :36:25.away. And Brownlee Junior has a lead of about a second over Brownlee
:36:26. > :36:30.senior. The impact of that move, almost came to a dead stop going
:36:31. > :36:35.past the tight turn. That was the time to do it. It was covered and
:36:36. > :36:42.now it seems that Jonathan has made another move. This is now give away
:36:43. > :36:45.victory to his brother. In front of the Stockholm Palace, Jonathan
:36:46. > :36:50.Brownlee is leading Alistair Brownlee. They will make the Turn 1
:36:51. > :36:54.more time and climb the carpet, and it looks as if victory will go to
:36:55. > :37:01.Jonathan Brownlee, unless Alistair can claw it back over the final few
:37:02. > :37:04.metres. Jonathan Brownlee will take his first World Triathlon Series
:37:05. > :37:10.victory of the season, over the sprint distance here, in Stockholm.
:37:11. > :37:15.He picks up the union flag. Alistair will have to settle for second this
:37:16. > :37:22.afternoon. And at last Jonny Brownlee can celebrate. The
:37:23. > :37:27.runner-up in Glasgow wins in Stockholm. It is a reversal of the
:37:28. > :37:30.positions that they achieved in the Commonwealth Games, as Alistair
:37:31. > :37:38.comes home for second place in the Stockholm sprint. Jonathan Brownlee
:37:39. > :37:46.wins, Alistair Brownlee second. The battle continues for third, with
:37:47. > :37:52.Mario Mola, Richard Murray, Joao Pereira. Gregor Buchholz of Germany
:37:53. > :37:57.is the first to find the carpet and moves ahead, looking for third.
:37:58. > :38:02.Murray isn't far-away. Mario Mola might still have something to offer
:38:03. > :38:05.here. But it is Gregor Buchholz who seems to have the uphill power
:38:06. > :38:10.towards the finish. Gregor Buchholz of Germany, looks like he will
:38:11. > :38:15.finish in third place in the Stockholm sprint. Gregor Buchholz
:38:16. > :38:21.almost home, one final effort from Richard Murray but it is not enough.
:38:22. > :38:27.Gregor Buchholz wins, Mario Mola in fourth place, and Murray relegated
:38:28. > :38:33.to fifth, ahead of Joao Pereira, and Anthony Pujades finishing in
:38:34. > :38:37.seventh. Confirmation of the final results in Stockholm. The first win
:38:38. > :38:42.of the season for Jonathan Brownlee, with his older brother Alister in
:38:43. > :38:48.second. -- his older brother Alistair.
:38:49. > :38:57.Congratulations on your first win in more than a year. Yes, it has been a
:38:58. > :39:02.nine time -- long time. It is nice to win. I enjoyed it, it was pure
:39:03. > :39:12.racing. It was great, I was loving it, enjoying flying around those
:39:13. > :39:17.corners. There is no better feeling, we knew they were not going
:39:18. > :39:21.to catch us, and it was perfect. I think we were in our element. We
:39:22. > :39:27.tried to keep it safe and just put in a good consistent bit of riding,
:39:28. > :39:31.and it was perfect today. Brilliant race, really enjoyed it. We were
:39:32. > :39:40.really curious about how it would end, could it be a sprint finish?
:39:41. > :39:43.Tell us about the run. My feet were literally white! You will never hear
:39:44. > :39:49.me complaining about being cold again, but I was too cold going into
:39:50. > :39:54.the run. I had to close that five second gap, use a lot to close
:39:55. > :39:57.that. I was running all right but I knew I didn't have a massive kick in
:39:58. > :40:02.my legs are so when he sped up, I just didn't have it. I did think
:40:03. > :40:08.here we go again, I'm going to get off the bike and be shattered like I
:40:09. > :40:13.was at the Commonwealth Games, and Alistair is going to get away from
:40:14. > :40:17.me again. I enjoyed it. The good news is you could still win the
:40:18. > :40:25.world title. You have put yourself in that position today. I didn't
:40:26. > :40:30.want Javier Gomez to get in the top three, ideally. The pack behind with
:40:31. > :40:35.lots of other fast runners in meant it was going to be very difficult
:40:36. > :40:43.for him to get in the top three. But Javier is still favourite. Chances
:40:44. > :40:48.are he will finish in the top three like yield ways does. Tell us why
:40:49. > :40:58.you pulled up, is it tactical or are you injured? I just had a feud
:40:59. > :41:03.problems. -- a few problems. I was focused to try to have a good race
:41:04. > :41:08.still but I felt tired and my stomach wasn't good. I wasn't going
:41:09. > :41:13.to make the top four or better, so it didn't make sense to keep going.
:41:14. > :41:19.I will just try to recover for next week. Training was not very good the
:41:20. > :41:24.past four weeks, and I need to recover. I hope it is not anything
:41:25. > :41:26.to back and I can recover next week. With one race to go, it is tight at
:41:27. > :41:48.the top. I would say that was a near-perfect
:41:49. > :41:52.race. It is almost time for the women to take centre stage here, but
:41:53. > :41:56.before that happens let's remind ourselves of two outstanding English
:41:57. > :42:08.performances in the Scottish Sun a few weeks ago.
:42:09. > :42:18.The highest ranked triathlete in the race today, Jodie Stimpson,
:42:19. > :42:24.controlling the pace of the race. Stimpson goes away, is that gold
:42:25. > :42:29.medal safe? Final effort from Jodie Stimpson, as she moves clear! And
:42:30. > :42:36.Jodie Stimpson wins the first gold of the games! And it will be bronze
:42:37. > :42:39.for the Nikki Holland. What a finish.
:42:40. > :42:52.And the medals just keep on coming for the Brits. The youth Olympics,
:42:53. > :42:56.the Loughborough youngster showed great maturity coming from behind to
:42:57. > :43:07.the Loughborough youngster showed just beat Daniel Hyde from New
:43:08. > :43:10.Zealand to the line. Sian finished in third place. Great to see
:43:11. > :43:13.Zealand to the line. Sian finished Britain's juniors doing so well on
:43:14. > :43:17.global stage. Back to the seniors here in Stockholm. Commonwealth
:43:18. > :43:22.champion Jodie Stimpson is just about to warm up in the water.
:43:23. > :43:26.Yesterday I caught up with her over breakfast to get her views on the
:43:27. > :43:30.treat, breakfast with a Commonwealth treat, breakfast with a Commonwealth
:43:31. > :43:33.champion. I had a word with your coach beforehand to ask you what I
:43:34. > :43:58.should lay out and he said need to go to the loo in the race!
:43:59. > :44:03.Touch wood, it solved my stomach issues. Hopefully it will continue.
:44:04. > :44:09.The hard work has been done, the months and years of training, and
:44:10. > :44:16.the gold medal coming her way now. Gold to Stimpson. What did becoming
:44:17. > :44:24.Commonwealth champion mean to you? It meant so much. It was my goal for
:44:25. > :44:27.so long. Being able to achieve it the way that I did was amazing, it
:44:28. > :44:34.is hard to put into words how much it meant. What was the reception
:44:35. > :44:41.like when you got back home? It is brilliant, my house was decorated, a
:44:42. > :44:45.big gold medal on the window, it was brilliant to share it with my family
:44:46. > :44:49.and friends. What is the attention like that comes with winning the
:44:50. > :44:55.Commonwealth Games? It is obviously nice and I wouldn't turn away from
:44:56. > :44:58.it. It is nice for people to see the achievements. But it is not what
:44:59. > :45:01.brings me back to triathlon, it is that feeling of getting onto the
:45:02. > :45:09.podium and looking to the grandstand and seeing your family there looking
:45:10. > :45:14.at you and that proud moment. You have become such a local celebrity,
:45:15. > :45:20.you had an event named after you! Yes, it was just before I went back
:45:21. > :45:26.onto camp, it was brilliant, I raced it, I was not going to let them half
:45:27. > :45:32.all the fun! It was brilliant. How hard was it to get back into
:45:33. > :45:36.training after the games? That was quite a challenge. It is nice going
:45:37. > :45:41.into the final two races with less pressure but I want to finish the
:45:42. > :45:45.season well. On the other side, my main goal was the Commonwealth Games
:45:46. > :45:53.so a big tick on that front but I want to finish well. It has been a
:45:54. > :45:57.cruise in the end the Jorgensen, she will take her fourth straight World
:45:58. > :46:03.Triathlon Series Victor Riu. To become world champion you are
:46:04. > :46:09.relying on Gwen Jorgensen not racing well at the grand final. I cannot
:46:10. > :46:16.control her, how fast those legs go on the run but I can control what I
:46:17. > :46:22.do. She is a fantastic athlete, she is the one to beat but I will go out
:46:23. > :46:29.and give it my best shot. Going into Hamburg, Helen Jenkins had been the
:46:30. > :46:34.nearest rival to Jorgensen but the foot injury she sustained in Germany
:46:35. > :46:37.meant her season was over. No Commonwealth Games and no chance of
:46:38. > :46:42.becoming world champion for a third time. As far Gwen, her form has been
:46:43. > :46:48.so red-hot this season, with four back-to-back wins in Yokohama,
:46:49. > :46:52.Chicago, London and Hamburg, the World Championship is hers to lose.
:46:53. > :47:00.As we saw last year in London, anything can happen. Without her in
:47:01. > :47:04.Stockholm, if Stimpson can follow up with another win today, she will
:47:05. > :47:10.keep the pressure on but to actually steal the title away, Jodie would
:47:11. > :47:17.need to win in Edmonton and rely on Gwen finishing outside the top seven
:47:18. > :47:22.in Canada. Although when, Helen and Helen Jackson are missing today,
:47:23. > :47:26.Jodie is not without competition. Lining up alongside her is the
:47:27. > :47:33.common wealth games silver-medallist Kirsten Sweetland and Sarah Groff of
:47:34. > :47:38.the USA. Back to Matt and Steve. COMMENTATOR: The penultimate event
:47:39. > :47:45.of the World Triathlon Series for 2014 for the women, eight sprint in
:47:46. > :47:49.Stockholm. The weather has improved since the men's race but they still
:47:50. > :47:55.dive into a freshening headwind. One or two getting jostled out of
:47:56. > :48:01.position in the early stages. A single lap in the water, cool
:48:02. > :48:04.conditions, 15 degrees water temperature so wet suits compulsory
:48:05. > :48:10.and they will go out and make the turn, head back to the far end of
:48:11. > :48:16.the pontoon before climbing up the stairs towards transition to pick up
:48:17. > :48:20.their bikes for the 20 kilometre cycle around the city centre and a
:48:21. > :48:24.five kilometre run. Jodie Stimpson wearing number one should be
:48:25. > :48:35.somewhere close to the bottom left as we pick her up in the early
:48:36. > :48:38.stages. 31, always a strong swimmer is Carolina Routier of Spain,
:48:39. > :48:42.stages. 31, always a strong swimmer girlfriend of Mario Mola who was in
:48:43. > :48:50.the men's competition earlier. She is forcing the pace on this
:48:51. > :48:55.nearside. The wind has dropped off significantly. The return leg
:48:56. > :49:04.towards the pontoon will be pretty quick I would imagine with the wind
:49:05. > :49:09.behind them. So far this season, Jodie Stimpson has had an excellent
:49:10. > :49:15.campaign, winning the first round in Auckland in April and backing that
:49:16. > :49:21.up with victory in Cape Town. Then Gwen Jorgensen started to hit her
:49:22. > :49:26.stride, winning in Yokohama, the sprint in London, winning again in
:49:27. > :49:30.Chicago and made it four in a row with victory in Hamburg and another
:49:31. > :49:40.sprint, the most recent race on the circuit. Stimpson and Jorgensen have
:49:41. > :49:46.shared all of the World Triathlon Series wins so far this season.
:49:47. > :49:50.Sarah Groff has been the second best American behind the fast running
:49:51. > :49:55.Jorgensen and in the absence of her compatriot, she will be hoping for
:49:56. > :50:03.potentially her best result of the season. She was fourth in Cape
:50:04. > :50:08.Town, second in London in the sprint behind Jorgensen. She will be hoping
:50:09. > :50:13.to be up there with Jodie Stimpson at the end of this race as they make
:50:14. > :50:18.the turn by the giant inflatable. Everybody will have to watch out,
:50:19. > :50:23.especially those on the inside, a few loose chords getting in the way
:50:24. > :50:31.but they have negotiated the first part of the turn. And already a big
:50:32. > :50:37.stretch in these swimmers. 330 metres to go, across the top end and
:50:38. > :50:44.heading back now, just one lap of the swim. As we sort with the men's
:50:45. > :50:49.race earlier, critical that you get into a good position to enable
:50:50. > :50:55.yourself to get up there on this difficult twisting and turning bike
:50:56. > :50:59.course. Hopefully the very wet conditions of the men's race we will
:51:00. > :51:04.not see again and it will be easier for bike handling on these narrow
:51:05. > :51:09.roads. And I wonder if the helicopter will be able to go up and
:51:10. > :51:14.give us some aerial shots which were sadly absent in the men's race
:51:15. > :51:20.because of the heavy weather. Carolina Routier of Spain leads the
:51:21. > :51:26.way here. One final gentle left-hand turn before they had to negotiate
:51:27. > :51:31.the steep steps out of the water onto the blue carpet of the pontoon
:51:32. > :51:37.before jogging towards transition. As they do so, they will start to
:51:38. > :51:41.remove their swim caps and release the zips on the wet suits to be
:51:42. > :51:48.ready for a smooth arrival and departure on two wheels from
:51:49. > :51:52.transition. Solid swim from Carolina Routier, just under nine and three
:51:53. > :51:57.court minutes as she steps out and starts to prepare but plenty of
:51:58. > :52:05.company for her including the two Americans, Groff and Katie Hursey.
:52:06. > :52:09.Alice Betto, Charlotte Bonin, Sara Vilic, Kirsten Sweetland also there,
:52:10. > :52:18.a lot in quick succession as they Vilic, Kirsten Sweetland also there,
:52:19. > :52:22.transition. No signs yet Vilic, Kirsten Sweetland also there,
:52:23. > :52:28.Stimpson. She was not with that first group coming out. That is the
:52:29. > :52:32.first surprise of the afternoon. Very important because Kirsten
:52:33. > :52:35.Sweetland, who was runner-up in the common love games, has had an
:52:36. > :52:44.excellent swim, just eight seconds down. -- Commonwealth Games. Lucy
:52:45. > :52:50.Hall looking strong as always, there is Carolina Routier in the red of
:52:51. > :52:56.Spain and we can see Sara Vilic as well but still no sign of Jodie
:52:57. > :53:02.Stimpson which is a surprise. The Italians, Alice Betto and Charlotte
:53:03. > :53:04.Bonin, Sara Croft as well. Yet to step out of the wet suit -- Sarah
:53:05. > :53:15.Groff. There is Kirsten Sweetland, the Canadian who was
:53:16. > :53:23.silver-medallist behind Jodie Stimpson at Glasgow. We will keep
:53:24. > :53:28.our eyes open for Stimpson. She was noticeably slow in the water. I
:53:29. > :53:33.think I just spotted her sprinting up the carpet, trying to close some
:53:34. > :53:39.ground but she has clearly left herself some work to do. She finds
:53:40. > :53:44.her way to her bike but stumbles slightly coming out of her wet
:53:45. > :53:48.suit, watching the others head off into the distance. She has picked up
:53:49. > :53:56.her two wheels and she is on her way. As they sort themselves out, we
:53:57. > :54:02.will get a full check in a moment or two as to who is in this front group
:54:03. > :54:12.of what I think is six. They need to be careful, it is still pretty
:54:13. > :54:16.slippery. Carolina Routier and Sarah Groff from Spain and the United
:54:17. > :54:25.States respectively. Croft gets her head down and tries to pick up the
:54:26. > :54:33.speed -- Groff. Katie Hursey was also in the leaders. Perhaps she and
:54:34. > :54:40.Sarah Groff can form a working American partnership and do some
:54:41. > :54:45.damage. We have Lucy Hall up there in third place at the moment. Lucy
:54:46. > :54:49.made a big effort at the Commonwealth Games to get away by
:54:50. > :54:57.herself on the bike, she is a very strong individual. Watching her move
:54:58. > :55:04.to the front, of course last year Alistair Brownlee sprinted away from
:55:05. > :55:07.the lead pack on the bike which nobody was expecting and perhaps
:55:08. > :55:19.Lucy has it in her mind to look at that. Back with the chasers, we can
:55:20. > :55:21.see... Any big movements? Still looking for Jodie Stimpson.
:55:22. > :55:29.Important that she gets back into the lead pack. Clarke could not get
:55:30. > :55:37.her feet positioned in the pedals. Going back to the front, this is
:55:38. > :55:42.Carolina Routier of Spain taking it up, the pack at the front has grown
:55:43. > :55:47.to about eight in number with one or two is attempting to bridge the gap
:55:48. > :55:50.and get amongst the leaders. Jodie Stimpson will have that project
:55:51. > :55:51.and get amongst the leaders. Jodie her mind as well coming from a
:55:52. > :56:07.little way behind. We have Lucy Hall, Kirsten
:56:08. > :56:10.Sweetland, Sarah Groff. Two of what we thought would be the three big
:56:11. > :56:16.names challenging together with Jodie Stimpson of Great Britain.
:56:17. > :56:22.Nicky Samuels had a strong swim, looking for Andrea Hewitt of New
:56:23. > :56:26.Zealand as well. Charlotte Bonin from Italy is in second position at
:56:27. > :56:31.this stage and the Italians also had the 30 close by, she is a decent
:56:32. > :56:38.swimmer -- the Italians also had the 30 close by, she is a decent
:56:39. > :56:44.Mazzetti. We are still relying on the motorcycle camera pictures in
:56:45. > :56:49.the early stages. The group is growing all the time at the front.
:56:50. > :56:56.It is ten and number 11 is not far behind. A group of potentially a
:56:57. > :57:09.dozen or so. There is Jodie Stimpson. She is slightly detached,
:57:10. > :57:22.she is pushing a pretty big gear, clearly hoping to close the gap. She
:57:23. > :57:28.has Jolanda Annen for company. She is in that big gear, chasing hard
:57:29. > :57:34.and determined to re-establish contact but chasing behind what I
:57:35. > :57:40.think is a second group. That will be very hard to bridge. Picking back
:57:41. > :57:47.up here at the front. Here we go. be very hard to bridge. Picking back
:57:48. > :57:56.Lucy Hall still up there at the front. Lucy Hall of Great Britain in
:57:57. > :58:00.second position at the moment. It is Kirsten Sweetland leading with Lucy
:58:01. > :58:07.Hall working hard to get on her wheel. Very strong, Kirsten
:58:08. > :58:13.Sweetland, we saw that at the Commonwealth Games and in the World
:58:14. > :58:20.Triathlon Series. Anja Knapp behind Lucy Hall as well. Kirsten Sweetland
:58:21. > :58:25.first across the line at the end of lap one. A group of ten or so and
:58:26. > :58:31.this is the gap back to Jodie Stimpson who has broken clear of
:58:32. > :58:37.Jolanda Annen. Stimpson still working on her foot position in the
:58:38. > :58:40.shoes as well, she has a lot of work to do, and you are right, she is
:58:41. > :58:52.behind the second group, not the leaders. The chasers come up the
:58:53. > :58:57.hill, Kovacs, Chelsea Burns, McShane from Hungary, USA and Australia. And
:58:58. > :59:03.then Jodie Stimpson, a further ten seconds off that group, nearly a
:59:04. > :59:09.minute behind the leaders. Jodie Stimpson with a real mountain to
:59:10. > :59:14.climb as she grips her teeth and comes past the palace in Stockholm.
:59:15. > :59:22.Your Annan is unable to match her for speed. -- Jolanda Annen. Hewitt
:59:23. > :59:28.and Clarke of New Zealand, Lucy Hall is the best position of the British
:59:29. > :59:35.triathletes at the moment, showing real prowess in the water. Now we
:59:36. > :59:44.will follow directly the hind the leading group. -- directly behind.
:59:45. > :59:57.Katie Hursey of the USA just bringing up the rear.
:59:58. > :00:02.where Jodie Stimpson was aiming. They can eyeball the leaders heading
:00:03. > :00:04.in the opposite direction. It is quite a significant gap. There
:00:05. > :00:10.in the opposite direction. It is Stimpson, just going through. She
:00:11. > :00:14.has a lot of work to do. She knows she's going to have to give it
:00:15. > :00:18.everything on the bike. It is not just about winning this race today,
:00:19. > :00:24.it is about giving Jodie Stimpson a fighting chance going into the grand
:00:25. > :00:28.final in Edmonton next weekend. Jonathan Brownlee's victory in the
:00:29. > :00:35.men's race has ensured that it will no longer be a dead rubber, the race
:00:36. > :00:42.in Edmonton. It will be a race for the world title between Jonny
:00:43. > :00:46.Brownlee and Gomez. Stimpson will hope to keep the women's world title
:00:47. > :00:53.race alive, but she is a long way off featuring that today. Nicky
:00:54. > :01:01.Samuels, a bunch of riders grouped within two seconds of each other
:01:02. > :01:05.there. About to begin the climb. Let's see just how close Jodie
:01:06. > :01:12.Stimpson has managed to get to this big chase group. I think Aileen Reid
:01:13. > :01:19.is there as well. That looks like Jodie Stimpson coming through, so
:01:20. > :01:23.she is making inroads. The gap down to 42 seconds between the lead group
:01:24. > :01:31.and the chase group. It would appear that Jodie Stimpson has just caught
:01:32. > :01:39.up by a few seconds. We will get Stimpson's official margin here, as
:01:40. > :01:46.she awaits the timing. Stimpson is 52, that is where it was, so now
:01:47. > :01:50.that difference between -- time difference between Lap 1 and Lap 2.
:01:51. > :01:54.The difference for Stimpson is that she has managed to catch the
:01:55. > :02:03.chasers, and she is still just under a minute off the leaders.
:02:04. > :02:06.chasers, and she is still just under Stimpson normally up there at the
:02:07. > :02:21.end of the swim but today she found herself off the pace. She's having a
:02:22. > :02:26.go now, trying to close the gap. It is tough to see that Stimpson, on a
:02:27. > :02:29.shorter sprint distance, can come through and win the race. I wonder
:02:30. > :02:37.if that will hand the World Triathlon Series title away, with
:02:38. > :02:44.the race in Edmonton to come next week. Stimpson has left herself an
:02:45. > :02:47.awful lot to do. She has been in great shape this year. She has
:02:48. > :02:54.learnt and improved so much over the past couple of years, particularly
:02:55. > :03:02.with her swimming technique, and her running is superb. Jodie Stimpson
:03:03. > :03:05.still not re-establishing contact. Again I question whether something
:03:06. > :03:22.happened out there in the swim to put her in this very unusual
:03:23. > :03:28.position. Just ahead of her, Kirsten Sweetland of Canada. The fear Kovacs
:03:29. > :03:39.of . -- Sophia Kovacs of Hungary.
:03:40. > :03:47.Natalie Milne on the right for Great Britain. She is middle order in this
:03:48. > :03:58.chase group as well. Milne 's number 38 today. Are we going to see any
:03:59. > :03:59.chase group as well. Milne 's number changes on this? Are we going to see
:04:00. > :04:02.Jodie Stimpson get back into the changes on this? Are we going to see
:04:03. > :04:06.second pack? Very changes on this? Are we going to see
:04:07. > :04:10.sprint distance race, time and distance are running out on the bike
:04:11. > :04:19.section. A group of 11 at the front of the field as they head towards
:04:20. > :04:32.the building for the turn, just in front of the Swedish government
:04:33. > :04:33.the building for the turn, just in premises. And we have something
:04:34. > :04:39.going on here premises. And we have something
:04:40. > :04:41.Zealand. She came to a grinding halt. Everyone was forced to put the
:04:42. > :04:50.brakes on Possibly a bit of help for Joni
:04:51. > :04:54.Stimpson to re-establish contact there, possibly with Ackerman going
:04:55. > :05:00.to wide on the turn and into the barriers. Didn't crash but certainly
:05:01. > :05:04.will have slowed her down. 48 seconds still the difference
:05:05. > :05:05.will have slowed her down. 48 Stimpson is still a little way off
:05:06. > :05:14.the chasers. There she Stimpson is still a little way off
:05:15. > :05:22.same stretch of road as the chasers, and she will arrive in front of the
:05:23. > :05:27.pond they few seconds behind the second group. Kirsten Sweetland
:05:28. > :05:32.pushes in hard for the tail end of lap number three. They will climb
:05:33. > :05:45.for the third time towards the top of the hill and the end of the third
:05:46. > :05:56.lap. Kirsten Sweetland and Samuels. Eighth place, Clark. Ninth, Lindsey
:05:57. > :06:01.Jerdonek. At the end of Lap 2, the gap between the leaders and Jodie
:06:02. > :06:06.Stimpson was 52 seconds. I can't see it being that much difference
:06:07. > :06:12.between the end of Lap 2 and the end of Lap 3, to be honest. Jody within
:06:13. > :06:19.a couple of seconds now of getting back in contact. We have got this
:06:20. > :06:23.climb which I think will help Jodie. The athletes will be watching out
:06:24. > :06:30.for each other by the transition, giving Jodie an opportunity to get
:06:31. > :06:34.back in the chase group. The gap between the leaders and chasers is
:06:35. > :06:42.49 seconds. The gap between the leaders and Jodie Stimpson is beyond
:06:43. > :06:49.52 seconds now. She has lost a bit of time, but she has just about
:06:50. > :06:52.caught the chasers. Now the rain is coming again, an umbrella is up
:06:53. > :06:57.around the course. That dark clouds were threatening and now they are
:06:58. > :07:02.delivering the precipitation that every rider fears. It can become
:07:03. > :07:13.rapidly slippery underfoot, under the rubber wheels. Lucy Hall is
:07:14. > :07:19.leading again, into one of the few long straight ways on the course.
:07:20. > :07:28.And it looks like we are down to nine now, with Katie Hursey
:07:29. > :07:35.struggling at the back. It seems there is a gap appearing now. Katie
:07:36. > :07:39.Hursey has been touted as the next great thing within American
:07:40. > :07:44.triathlon, but so far she has not quite backed it up with results. She
:07:45. > :07:47.has started a couple of races pretty well, she started this one pretty
:07:48. > :07:55.well, now starting to drift. Once again the rain distorts our view of
:07:56. > :08:00.the back of the leading group. The chase group hunting down the
:08:01. > :08:02.leaders. Let's see how much headway Jodie
:08:03. > :08:09.leaders. Let's see how much headway chase group. She is in about six or
:08:10. > :08:18.seven position in that group. I think it is Natalie Milne pushing
:08:19. > :08:22.out in front of the chase group. Here we are on the lead group.
:08:23. > :08:28.Kirsten Sweetland wearing number three, right behind and
:08:29. > :08:41.-- behind Anja Knapp. Another downpour. They are already soaked to
:08:42. > :08:45.the skin and now they will get another drenching for good measure.
:08:46. > :08:49.Samuels hits the Bell first. another drenching for good measure.
:08:50. > :08:57.Hursey is the one struggling to maintain pace. The leaders on their
:08:58. > :09:09.way on their final lap. Meanwhile the chasers have still got the back
:09:10. > :09:14.end of Lap 4 to complete. Now with the weather really setting in, that
:09:15. > :09:18.chase group just stretching out and the athletes taking a bit more
:09:19. > :09:29.care, a bit more caution as they are going round corners.
:09:30. > :09:40.That is Vendula Frintova, as we go up the hill. It has grown
:09:41. > :09:46.substantially, the chase group. Another ten seconds, the gap between
:09:47. > :09:56.the leaders and the chasers. The end of lap for, it is now one minute and
:09:57. > :09:58.two seconds. -- lap four. Natalie Milne
:09:59. > :10:04.two seconds. -- lap four. Natalie lose contact. And perhaps an
:10:05. > :10:09.injection of pace in this chase group now, because that has really
:10:10. > :10:15.stretched right the way through. Jailing and slander is in that group
:10:16. > :10:23.from South Africa, currently based in London. I would suggest that this
:10:24. > :10:32.is shaping up for a battle between Andrea Hewitt, Kirsten Sweetland and
:10:33. > :10:41.Sarah Groff. The change from two wheels to a 5,000-metre foot race.
:10:42. > :10:45.Under -- five kilometres to ride. Those three all featuring in this
:10:46. > :10:51.lead group and it is cautious, sensibly so, as they make the last
:10:52. > :11:04.hairpin bend and then head back towards the final lap. Charlotte
:11:05. > :11:07.Bonin of Italy struggling in the conditions. Similar to how it was in
:11:08. > :11:12.the men's race earlier this afternoon. Interesting, Sarah Groff
:11:13. > :11:18.just seems to be staying slightly to the side of this pack now. Looking
:11:19. > :11:21.to keep out of trouble, counting down the few remaining metres to go.
:11:22. > :11:25.Getting towards the very end of the bike section. There is Sarah Groff,
:11:26. > :11:38.just in front of Carolina Routier. She doesn't want to see the
:11:39. > :11:39.possibility of a rider coming down just in front of her at this late
:11:40. > :12:02.stage, on the bike. Going a bit wide on the turn, don't
:12:03. > :12:08.want to go to wide and take the risk of the back wheel falling away in
:12:09. > :12:16.the wet conditions. And now more and more emphasis on caution. Now we
:12:17. > :12:22.have got through almost the full 20 kilometres, beginning to anticipate
:12:23. > :12:32.the run. Well, for a long time it was a group of 11. It is now down to
:12:33. > :12:40.ten. Katie Hursey unable to match the pace. Sarah Groff will really
:12:41. > :12:50.fancy her chances now, heading into the 5,000-metre run. Along with
:12:51. > :12:52.Sarah, I think Kirsten Sweetland has really developed her running from
:12:53. > :13:01.what was already a very good standard. Just so close and so far.
:13:02. > :13:04.She may well have a mechanical problem there, because you wouldn't
:13:05. > :13:10.have expected her to be spinning that easy a gear, it wouldn't feel
:13:11. > :13:17.right. Possibly the weather conditions, if you have some grit in
:13:18. > :13:23.the chain well. Kirsten Sweetland very dynamic in this group, keeping
:13:24. > :13:27.the speed up. Must be feeling confident in her running after that
:13:28. > :13:32.renders performance in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games. Sarah
:13:33. > :13:35.Groff, who perhaps had a down season last year and has really come back
:13:36. > :13:40.to the very top level now. Jodie Stimpson sitting in, I think, second
:13:41. > :13:58.place, beginning to force it a little. Yeah, Stimpson just sitting
:13:59. > :14:03.in behind. This is the chase group. Going back for the conclusion of the
:14:04. > :14:08.final lap. The leaders will make their turn on foot. They hit the
:14:09. > :14:14.dismount line which is at the bottom of the Cobble Hill, and then they
:14:15. > :14:21.climb towards their allotted stands, up the hill, led by Nicky
:14:22. > :14:36.Samuels and Andrea Hewitt and Sarah Groff. Sweetland of Canada. Andrea
:14:37. > :14:46.Hewitt arrives on stand. Sweetland follows quickly. A good transition
:14:47. > :14:54.from Sarah Groff, Anja Knapp matching her stride for stride with
:14:55. > :15:00.the rest being catch up. Great grand vision -- great transition the
:15:01. > :15:10.Groff. Looking back at Kirsten Sweetland, very fast indeed, almost
:15:11. > :15:15.looks to be sprinting out. We will see what happens with the lead
:15:16. > :15:19.group. At the moment, that gap has stretched out more and more over the
:15:20. > :15:26.final lap. One minute and ten seconds now, that will be
:15:27. > :15:30.extraordinarily hard to close down. Jodie Stimpson being very careful as
:15:31. > :15:36.she pushes her bike, she had an accident doing that in Yokohama
:15:37. > :15:40.earlier in the season, she tripped over her bike and injured her leg.
:15:41. > :15:47.Massive time difference with only five kilometres to run through the
:15:48. > :15:50.field, Jodie Stimpson will not be winning here in Stockholm this
:15:51. > :15:56.afternoon. If she is watching this from afar, Gwen Jorgensen will be
:15:57. > :16:02.starting to relax a little bit heading into the final race of the
:16:03. > :16:06.series in Edmonton next weekend. Groff was in and out like a flash
:16:07. > :16:12.and the others were left a little dazed as they watched her move
:16:13. > :16:18.gracefully out of the carpeted area and onto the first lap of two in the
:16:19. > :16:23.run. Sweetland is trying to close the gap but it was Jerdonek who was
:16:24. > :16:29.first to react and now Sarah Groff decides to inject some extra pace as
:16:30. > :16:37.she moves clear of her fellow American Lindsey Jerdonek. Sarah
:16:38. > :16:42.Groff has made a real statement this early on. I was almost anticipating
:16:43. > :16:46.that she would sit there with the first group on the first lap and
:16:47. > :16:51.possibly make a move on the second lap at she has decided to go for it
:16:52. > :16:55.from the start and to put that kind of distance between herself and
:16:56. > :17:02.Kirsten Sweetland in third place... Jodie Stimpson going through towards
:17:03. > :17:08.the front of the chasing pack. She is running for pride as much as
:17:09. > :17:13.anything, determined to chase down. Wearing number one, currently ranked
:17:14. > :17:16.second in the world. Looking to see how many people she can break
:17:17. > :17:23.through from the chasing group. Sarah Groff is leading, Sweetland in
:17:24. > :17:28.second, Hewitt passed Jerdonek into third, she can be a slow burner in
:17:29. > :17:34.the run. She can take a while to find her speed and sometimes you
:17:35. > :17:40.think she is broken and beaten. Then she gets her second wind. Andrea
:17:41. > :17:46.Hewitt has been so consistent over a number of years, she has had ten
:17:47. > :17:50.podium placings which is exceptional, the consistency is
:17:51. > :17:57.there. Kirsten Sweetland is looking strong, seems to be closing down on
:17:58. > :18:06.the leader Sarah Groff. Lucy Hall struggling a little bit. Sarah Groff
:18:07. > :18:12.is looking so strong now and if anything she is moving away from her
:18:13. > :18:17.pursuers. Back on the flat, open ground, knowing she is within six
:18:18. > :18:23.minutes of finishing the race. Sweetland covers yet again, Hewitt
:18:24. > :18:32.working hard. I think they are maintaining that gap and that
:18:33. > :18:39.consistency. Sarah Groff, a real nature lover, she has a degree in
:18:40. > :18:51.conservation biology, a very team ornithologist. -- keen. She has been
:18:52. > :18:55.overshadowed, her generally consistent results in the American
:18:56. > :19:00.set up overshadowed by the epic performances of Gwen Jorgensen but
:19:01. > :19:07.in the absence of Jorgensen here in Stockholm, Groff is leading them
:19:08. > :19:13.home and the job is almost done. Is there any movement from the three
:19:14. > :19:19.hind who look bunched for a battle for second and third? Hewitt of New
:19:20. > :19:26.Zealand, Sweetland of Canada, Samuels of New Zealand. It is Groff
:19:27. > :19:34.of the USA who is leading the World Series in Stockholm. It looks like
:19:35. > :19:38.we have a slight surge from Sarah Groff. If anything, moving a couple
:19:39. > :19:48.of extra metres away from her pursuers. Andrea Hewitt and Kirsten
:19:49. > :19:52.Sweetland just exchanging the lead position in this group, Nicky
:19:53. > :20:00.Samuels seems content to stay in fourth place overall. Just
:20:01. > :20:05.approaching the big roundabout turn around and that will give Sarah
:20:06. > :20:10.Groff a good indication of how much other lead she has got and whether
:20:11. > :20:18.she can maintain it over the last few hundred metres to the finish.
:20:19. > :20:25.She will take the hairpin and will return in the other direction with a
:20:26. > :20:34.great idea of just how significant her lead is. Hewitt, Sweetland and
:20:35. > :20:41.Samuels turn, Groff looks in no danger at all of surrendering her
:20:42. > :20:48.lead, she is cruising along here. If there is to be a closing of the gap,
:20:49. > :20:52.it needs a surge because if Sarah Groff has that gap, however fast the
:20:53. > :20:58.Sprint might be from her chasers, it will not close. With less than 800
:20:59. > :21:06.metres to go, she is moving away from her pursuers. The last 750
:21:07. > :21:11.metres of the race for Sarah Groff to hold on and take her first World
:21:12. > :21:16.Triathlon Series victory. She had to settle for second behind Gwen
:21:17. > :21:21.Jorgensen in Hyde Park in London in May. In the absence of Jorgensen and
:21:22. > :21:29.a misfiring Jodie Stimpson this afternoon, Groff has taken
:21:30. > :21:32.advantage. Meanwhile, Hewitt and Sweetland along with Samuels who
:21:33. > :21:38.looks to be fading slightly, they are locked in combat for the other
:21:39. > :21:41.medals. Actually, Samuels looks to be digging deep and may
:21:42. > :21:52.but Sweetland and Hewitt look more comfortable. Samuel is not giving
:21:53. > :22:00.this up. A big move by Nicky Samuels, she moved away and covered
:22:01. > :22:06.it. What will we see in the final stage? We know we will see the
:22:07. > :22:09.leader coming through. Sarah Groff has performed beautifully this
:22:10. > :22:15.afternoon, her timing has been exquisite, there is a move on behind
:22:16. > :22:20.for second and third. Hewitt is moving clear of Samuels and
:22:21. > :22:24.Sweetland cannot stay with them. The New Zealanders will battle it out
:22:25. > :22:27.for the medals but victory in Stockholm will go to Sarah Groff of
:22:28. > :22:33.the United States of America! At last she wins a World Triathlon
:22:34. > :22:40.Series race, Andrea Hewitt finishes in second, Nicky Samuels makes it
:22:41. > :22:44.two Kiwis on the podium in third and Kirsten Sweetland is out of the
:22:45. > :22:50.medals here in fourth place. One hour and three minutes exactly for
:22:51. > :22:54.Sarah Groff to win the World Triathlon Series in Stockholm.
:22:55. > :23:04.Lindsey Jerdonek turned 30 yesterday, she finishes in fifth
:23:05. > :23:09.position. Meanwhile, they come through with Anja Knapp the first of
:23:10. > :23:24.the Germans to finish. Andrei -- Anja Knapp sprinting
:23:25. > :23:29.home, sixth place for her. We will find out shortly how much time and
:23:30. > :23:36.how many places Jodie Stimpson was able to recover during the run. Lucy
:23:37. > :23:39.Hall has done well, Charlotte Bonin finishing in eighth, it is
:23:40. > :23:44.Hall has done well, Charlotte Bonin for Lucy Hall, I think that is her
:23:45. > :23:49.first World Triathlon Series top ten of the series as they come home
:23:50. > :23:55.thick and fast. Stimson comes home a way adrift of the leaders down in
:23:56. > :24:01.16th position, one minute and 21 off the pace. The first ever World
:24:02. > :24:07.Triathlon Series win for Sarah Groff, beating Andrea Hewitt by four
:24:08. > :24:12.seconds, Nicky Samuels finished third. Lucy Hall was the best of the
:24:13. > :24:18.British triathletes today, finishing in ninth. Jodie Stimpson came home
:24:19. > :24:22.in 16th. Gwen Jorgensen is still leading the series standings
:24:23. > :24:27.comfortably, Sarah Groff has leapfrogged Jodie Stimpson into
:24:28. > :24:33.second position overall. I got battered in the swim, I wasn't too
:24:34. > :24:39.far off, I think I could have caught the front group. But on the first
:24:40. > :24:42.bend, the South African girl went into the back of my wheel and her
:24:43. > :24:47.handlebars got locked into my back wheel so it was catch up for the
:24:48. > :24:52.second group and not the first group. It was quite hard! I would
:24:53. > :24:58.like to think I am like a fine wine and get better with age! I lost
:24:59. > :25:01.pretty much all of June and hamburger was a bit rough but it is
:25:02. > :25:03.nice to have a consistent year and be back racing at a better level
:25:04. > :25:17.Best hamburger -- hamburger. The Sprint finish, I got there in
:25:18. > :25:22.the end. I came out of the water a bit back and had a hard first lap on
:25:23. > :25:28.the bike. It paid off at the end. When it started to rain, you get
:25:29. > :25:33.tentative around the corners. Everybody gets a bit more cautious
:25:34. > :25:37.but it can play into our hands, the Brits, we are all quite handy on the
:25:38. > :25:41.bike and confident. The Brits, we are all quite handy on the
:25:42. > :25:45.played into our hands. You did your best and you still have an outside
:25:46. > :25:50.chance of being world champion. I will take the Commonwealth Games and
:25:51. > :25:55.we will give the series ago! It was a hard day but one more race to go
:25:56. > :26:01.so hopefully I will end better than that. What have you learned from
:26:02. > :26:06.your best result ever? You cross the line, you think I could have done
:26:07. > :26:12.this or that better come athletes always want to be number one and get
:26:13. > :26:15.to the top. My run is coming on and I am happy with how it is
:26:16. > :26:21.progressing but at the same time I was disappointed with the second
:26:22. > :26:28.lap. I tightened up a bit, I could feel my shoulders rolling but I am
:26:29. > :26:32.happy and I will go away happy. It was not Jodie Stimpson's date but
:26:33. > :26:37.always fantastic to see a new winner. Lovely to see the Brownlees
:26:38. > :26:41.making full use of their Commonwealth Games form and younger
:26:42. > :26:47.brother Johnny outrunning Alistair to take top spot. That is seven
:26:48. > :26:53.events down, want to go into seven days time, the 2014 World Triathlon
:26:54. > :26:57.Series grand final in Edmonton and as well as that action from Canada
:26:58. > :26:59.there are lot of other Olympic sports to enjoy in the next few
:27:00. > :27:18.days. The brothers showing the way once
:27:19. > :27:29.again. It is simply stunning! A wonderful performance. Geraint
:27:30. > :27:35.Thomas, what a superb victory! It is a golden floor routine!
