:00:51. > :00:56.Hello and welcome to the highlights coverage of the World Triathlon
:00:57. > :01:00.Series. I have come to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London to
:01:01. > :01:05.sample the sites and sounds of a great new scheme, but more on that
:01:06. > :01:09.later. The other event is on the other side of the world, the Gold
:01:10. > :01:15.Coast in Australia, to be precise. And the heat is really on. It may
:01:16. > :01:20.only be round two of the series but for Britons Jodie Stimpson and Helen
:01:21. > :01:25.Jenkins it is the last chance to impress the selectors for Rio. All
:01:26. > :01:28.eyes on the Brownlee brothers. Their Olympic season begins on the Gold
:01:29. > :01:32.Coast and they go head to head for the first time since Hyde Park in
:01:33. > :01:36.London last year. And a crucial race were Gordon Benson and Tom Bishop,
:01:37. > :01:42.both looking to prove they have what it takes to support the Brownlee
:01:43. > :01:46.brothers at the Olympics. Quite a weekend down under but without doubt
:01:47. > :01:49.the women's race demands the spotlight. Four years ago it was a
:01:50. > :01:57.case of broken Olympic dreams for both Helen and Jodie. Alan has a
:01:58. > :02:02.real chance of gold in 2012, ruined by injury. -- Helen had a real
:02:03. > :02:05.chance. Jodie was not selected. Now it could happen all over again. We
:02:06. > :02:17.have chatted to both of them ahead of this race.
:02:18. > :02:21.Reigning Commonwealth Games champion. It is great to see you
:02:22. > :02:26.back. The season so far is tremendous. The winter period has
:02:27. > :02:30.been consistent. Preparation going into the first couple of races, I
:02:31. > :02:33.couldn't have faulted it, it has been brilliant, but they were always
:02:34. > :02:39.stepping stones and I knew this one counted. It is all a build-up to
:02:40. > :02:44.this one. What are you looking for for Saturday, race day, for yourself
:02:45. > :02:49.and how the race might pan out? This election is to show medal contention
:02:50. > :02:55.for Rio and to prove that I am capable of getting a medal if things
:02:56. > :03:02.go my way. Trying to prove that is obviously key. The swimming will be
:03:03. > :03:06.important here. It will be a fast swim, so it will be an extremely
:03:07. > :03:13.fast run. Hopefully I will be there and we can see what happens. Looking
:03:14. > :03:17.at Abu Dhabi, you are in physically great shape, but emotionally you
:03:18. > :03:22.took a knock. How have you gone from here on in since then? I have had
:03:23. > :03:26.some great training since Abu Dhabi, probably the best of four years,
:03:27. > :03:30.which has been really positive. I want to have a good result because
:03:31. > :03:33.of all the selection and because it is a World Series, but just to
:03:34. > :03:38.deliver on the training I have done because it has been really positive.
:03:39. > :03:46.I am really excited to see if I can go out there and race well off it.
:03:47. > :03:50.When I think along I have been doing this sport, this is my third time
:03:51. > :03:54.going through an Olympic cycle. It does feel like a long time but I am
:03:55. > :03:57.in a good place at the moment, really enjoying the training this
:03:58. > :04:01.season and looking forward to being back out there racing and just
:04:02. > :04:04.enjoying it. I love racing in Australia because it is such a
:04:05. > :04:09.sporting nation and everyone gets behind it. It is always good fun to
:04:10. > :04:15.race here and Aussies are very knowledgeable about triathlon, which
:04:16. > :04:19.is fun. Talking about British selection for yourself, is that
:04:20. > :04:24.something that you may be a bit mob conservative about? Are you going
:04:25. > :04:30.for the win? Are you racing personally? We have one spot and
:04:31. > :04:33.Jodie and I are ranked one and three in the world and it is crazy that
:04:34. > :04:37.one of us will not be going to the Games and I wish we could both go
:04:38. > :04:41.but I have got to be sensible. I have been through different race
:04:42. > :04:45.scenarios and I will see how it pans out. I know that all round I am a
:04:46. > :04:48.really good triathlete. It is more about doing the race than thinking
:04:49. > :04:54.about selection for me at the moment. I have just got to focus on
:04:55. > :04:58.me, my goals and what I want to do in the race and prove that I deserve
:04:59. > :05:03.to go. Having said that, if Helen has a better rate than me, then she
:05:04. > :05:07.deserves it. She is a very difficult competitor to go up against. No
:05:08. > :05:11.matter whether I make the team or not, I will need downtime to build
:05:12. > :05:25.on the second half of the series or to build on and focus on Rio. Either
:05:26. > :05:27.way it will be nice to go home, have some down time and build to
:05:28. > :05:30.whichever path leads me. We saw each other earlier in the week and you
:05:31. > :05:33.see more relaxed maybe. I am relaxed because I am not thinking about the
:05:34. > :05:36.Olympics. Somebody mentioned Rio the other day and I said gosh, yes, it
:05:37. > :05:39.is this year. It is not playing on me day to day. In the build-up to
:05:40. > :05:45.London I thought about it every day for two years, three maybe. It was
:05:46. > :05:51.always there. With the setbacks, I have learned to roll with it a bit
:05:52. > :05:56.and if it happens, it happens. The Olympics is so important but it is
:05:57. > :06:00.not everything. I have got my goals that I want to hit for the race and
:06:01. > :06:04.that is my race planning but it will be influenced by the other racers.
:06:05. > :06:11.You can't go in with what you want to happen. You cannot plan it like
:06:12. > :06:14.that, unfortunately. The main one is the Australian qualification as
:06:15. > :06:18.well, and they will be looking at the first Aussie across the line. No
:06:19. > :06:22.matter where I am in the race, the Aussies will be an influence on the
:06:23. > :06:26.race as well. I think it will make it much harder and faster on race
:06:27. > :06:30.day. It would have been nice to qualify one year out but it is what
:06:31. > :06:34.it is and it is all down to this weekend. I think I will be
:06:35. > :06:38.disappointed if I am not going to Rio. I will be disappointed. It is
:06:39. > :06:42.what I am aiming for but it will not be devastating to me. Life goes on
:06:43. > :06:45.and I think I have a good balance at the moment with where I am. It has
:06:46. > :07:00.been a healthy attitude for me over the past few
:07:01. > :07:02.months and I have got to try and maintain that into the race. I have
:07:03. > :07:05.Panay, plan B, Clancy. I have entered loads of races and that is
:07:06. > :07:15.it. I will decide on which plan to take. -- I have plan A, plan B.
:07:16. > :07:19.Jodie and Helen is very much the storyline in the Gold Coast but
:07:20. > :07:24.there is plenty more to watch in this world-class race. These are the
:07:25. > :07:28.ones to watch. With so much at stake for so many, the women's race this
:07:29. > :07:31.weekend promises to be a real nailbiter. This trailing contingent
:07:32. > :07:34.on the start line will be desperate to perform well in front of their
:07:35. > :07:39.national team selectors. The first to finish in the top ten earns an
:07:40. > :07:43.automatic spot for Rio while the other two places are discretionary.
:07:44. > :07:48.Ashleigh Gentle's second place in Abu Dhabi makes her the one to beat
:07:49. > :07:54.but in hot pursuit will be Erin Densham and Emma Moffatt. Also keen
:07:55. > :07:57.to impress our former under 23 World Champion Charlotte McShane and
:07:58. > :08:03.Gillian Backhouse, who was the top Aussie finisher at last month's test
:08:04. > :08:07.event. Expect a lot of focus on Gwen Jorgensen, the favourite for Olympic
:08:08. > :08:11.gold. The World Champion looks stronger than ever as she claimed
:08:12. > :08:16.victory last weekend in the cup race. She is aiming to win her 13th
:08:17. > :08:19.consecutive World Series race here. It was an American podium clean
:08:20. > :08:23.sweep in the Gold Coast last year and after being caught up in last
:08:24. > :08:29.month's crash in Abu Dhabi, silver and bronze medallists Sarah True and
:08:30. > :08:32.Katie Zeffirelli will want to remind themselves of better times in
:08:33. > :08:36.Queensland. And the whole of the triathlon world will be cheering on
:08:37. > :08:42.New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt following the death of her fiance
:08:43. > :08:48.last November. Lusty's World Series runner-up has started the season
:08:49. > :08:52.well with second place behind Gwen Jorgensen. She is aiming for another
:08:53. > :08:59.podium finish in Australia. Race highlights now.
:09:00. > :09:04.Stage two of the World Triathlon Series in the Gold Coast in
:09:05. > :09:09.Australia, Queensland, the venue. What a sensational backdrop. We
:09:10. > :09:15.began in Abu Dhabi, on the 5th of March. And now we are in the Gold
:09:16. > :09:20.Coast and it is a two lacks swim, originally supposed to start on the
:09:21. > :09:23.beach, but it will be a pontoon start now. The exit the water at the
:09:24. > :09:28.end of the first lap and then they will pick up their bikes and cycle
:09:29. > :09:34.eight laps around the streets of the Gold Coast. 85 kilometre laps to
:09:35. > :09:41.complete the 40 kilometres full Olympic distance for triathlon. The
:09:42. > :09:46.run is a 10,000 metres affair, the Olympic distance. Four lapse of 2.5
:09:47. > :09:53.kilometres. And that is how things will round off. Stimpson was number
:09:54. > :09:59.one. Gentle, Jenkins, Flora Duffy, Renee Tomlin, Emmie Charayron, on
:10:00. > :10:05.that first page. You may be surprised to see True and Jordans
:10:06. > :10:09.and wearing later start numbers that that is because they did not race in
:10:10. > :10:17.Abu Dhabi, saving their start for this race in the Gold Coast. This is
:10:18. > :10:21.round two of the 2016 World Triathlon Series on the Gold Coast.
:10:22. > :10:27.It is under way. A spectacular dive start. Look at that. They have
:10:28. > :10:32.spread out after leaving the pontoon. A total of 65 athletes on
:10:33. > :10:35.their way. It one of his Olympic distance triathlon, which were so
:10:36. > :10:42.many nations is an important race in terms of Olympic selection. Three
:10:43. > :10:51.distinct groups forming. There are some clouds above. Not quite as
:10:52. > :10:54.beautiful as it was an hour ago on the Gold Coast. Conditions still
:10:55. > :11:00.officially sunny but the hint of a storm in the hour. At the moment it
:11:01. > :11:05.is nice and warm. The athletes are making their way out towards the
:11:06. > :11:09.first turn on this anticlockwise swim. We will get another look at
:11:10. > :11:18.the dive start. A spectacular start to round two of the 2016 World
:11:19. > :11:23.Triathlon Series. As yet, no sign of number one Jodie Stimpson of Great
:11:24. > :11:27.Britain or number three compatriot Helen Jenkins. They will both expect
:11:28. > :11:32.to be near the lead of the swim at the end. They have to exit the
:11:33. > :11:38.water, remember, after the first 1000 metres, and then dive back in
:11:39. > :11:43.for the second shorter lap. This is a swim that I would imagine Helen
:11:44. > :11:50.would like. No wet suit, motion swim, so quite bumpy. Not surprised
:11:51. > :11:55.that she will be up at the front of this swim. Early days yet. Mark
:11:56. > :11:58.Jenkins, her husband and coach, has said that she has done really well
:11:59. > :12:03.and had one of the best blocks of training that she has had in four
:12:04. > :12:07.years since the race in Abu Dhabi when she finished third. Mark and
:12:08. > :12:11.Helen highly optimistic in their assessment of her fitness and
:12:12. > :12:16.ability at the moment. Mark described her as the best triathlete
:12:17. > :12:22.in the world, which was quite a bold statement to make. It was very bold.
:12:23. > :12:27.We haven't seen the Helen that we saw in 2012, before she got injured
:12:28. > :12:34.ahead of the London Olympics, 20 got first place in Abu Dhabi. I still
:12:35. > :12:37.think there is room for improvement. She is 32, and for an endurance
:12:38. > :12:43.athlete she has a good couple of years in her. The first turn, time
:12:44. > :12:48.to steer clear of trouble. A bit of a jam and this is where things can
:12:49. > :12:53.get interesting. If you get caught on the inside. Elbows flying.
:12:54. > :12:59.Suddenly got stopped in their tracks, number 27, Melanie Santos
:13:00. > :13:03.from Portugal. She got a blow in the face, I think. Just treading water
:13:04. > :13:10.for a few seconds. I hope she is OK. Meanwhile out in front, Carolina
:13:11. > :13:15.Routier putting pressure on Samuels and they continue to make the turn.
:13:16. > :13:20.These shots showing us how tough it can be because sometimes you do not
:13:21. > :13:26.get a close-up view of what goes on in the water, but that shot just
:13:27. > :13:31.showed viewers how tough it can get. We have a break here. Carolyn rete
:13:32. > :13:39.eight deciding to go it alone. And Nicky Samuels and Katie is a Ferris,
:13:40. > :13:45.I think. And then another body length and the next group is behind
:13:46. > :13:49.them. Carolina Routier has put in a solid performance so far. It will be
:13:50. > :13:55.interesting to see who remains in touching difference with her --
:13:56. > :14:00.touching distance. Carolina Routier has managed to stay clear of danger,
:14:01. > :14:04.swimming away from the rest of the pack, and she will have a solitary
:14:05. > :14:10.run along the blue carpet as she comes up the ramp now, at the end of
:14:11. > :14:13.the first of two laps. Carolina Routier eight Spain jogs along the
:14:14. > :14:19.pontoon with a cursory glance over her shoulder to see who is following
:14:20. > :14:32.her. She is back in the water of a two, followed by Samuels, Jones, and
:14:33. > :14:36.we will keep an eye out for the two British athletes. I think I saw
:14:37. > :14:40.Helen Jenkins going through, just passing in front of our screen. I
:14:41. > :14:43.cannot confirm whether or not Jodie Stimpson is in the front group.
:14:44. > :14:46.Unfortunately we didn't get the graphic that we normally get at the
:14:47. > :14:53.end of the first lap to confirm who is in which position.
:14:54. > :14:59.Stimpson is a long way behind, Jenkins out in 13th, looking at the
:15:00. > :15:04.field, I would suggest that therefore Stimpson was in
:15:05. > :15:08.approximately 30 and position, so a better start so far for Helen
:15:09. > :15:12.Jenkins. I was a little optimistic in my assessment of Stimpson's
:15:13. > :15:22.position, I thought 30th, in fact it is 42nd position. So already the
:15:23. > :15:27.plot for British triathlon and Olympic selection is beckoning. It
:15:28. > :15:33.certainly is, and you have got to feel for Jodie, she has got a lot of
:15:34. > :15:37.work to do, the bike course is very technical, and we saw last year
:15:38. > :15:42.there were lots of breaks, and I think if she does not try to pull
:15:43. > :15:47.something back on this second lap, a much shorter lap, and a 500 metres,
:15:48. > :15:52.so only around about six minutes or less on swimming to go, so Jodie,
:15:53. > :16:01.she is in a spot of bother at the moment. You can see the gap between
:16:02. > :16:05.the first group and the chasers, the first group numbers about 25, and
:16:06. > :16:10.then there is a lone swimmer just tried to close the gap and join in
:16:11. > :16:16.the fun at the front. And then a gap to the group that contains Jodie
:16:17. > :16:21.Stimpson. You can see the final exit point, so they are not finishing at
:16:22. > :16:25.the same point where they started the race. It will be up the beach,
:16:26. > :16:30.where the race was originally scheduled to start, across the soft
:16:31. > :16:36.sand as they exit the Pacific Ocean and make their way up to transition
:16:37. > :16:45.to find their bikes and begin lap 1 of age to complete 40 kilometres and
:16:46. > :16:56.two wheels. And what they start for Carolina Routier, proving she is the
:16:57. > :17:00.one to watch in the water. 23, 24 is my rough count of the numbers
:17:01. > :17:04.involved in this first group as the Arrowhead makes its way to the soft
:17:05. > :17:08.sand, and Routier exit is once again, with a glance over her
:17:09. > :17:14.shoulder to see who will follow her out of the water. She is followed by
:17:15. > :17:21.Kirsten Kasper, Nicky Samuels, Gillian Backhouse, then Zaferes,
:17:22. > :17:28.true. Erin Jones of the USA, followed by Gwen Jorgensen, then the
:17:29. > :17:33.first of the British athletes is Helen Jenkins coming out in about 30
:17:34. > :17:39.position. She is hoping to join any action at the start of the ride, you
:17:40. > :17:44.can just see Jenkins clipping on her helmet on the left on-screen. She
:17:45. > :17:49.will exit hot on the heels of Gwen Jorgensen, Katie Zaferes, one two
:17:50. > :17:53.other Americans. Sarah True is in that group as well, and we will keep
:17:54. > :17:57.an eye on transition to see the gap as it builds for the arrival of the
:17:58. > :18:03.second group, which contains Jodie Stimpson. But round one, in terms of
:18:04. > :18:09.the British battle, to Helen Jenkins. So Routier will cede the
:18:10. > :18:15.lead quite quickly, she will not have any designs on making a break.
:18:16. > :18:19.The gap coming out of the water was not particularly significant, so we
:18:20. > :18:25.have four, they will be caught quite quickly by the chasing group of
:18:26. > :18:32.around 16 or 17 as they make this hairpin bend. This group, five, six,
:18:33. > :18:36.I have lost count, the group behind will close them down quite quickly,
:18:37. > :18:40.and then they will get to work, writing is effectively and as
:18:41. > :18:47.quickly as possible to try and keep the chase group at bay. Some of the
:18:48. > :18:54.highlights of transition number one, Kasper of the USA off to a flying
:18:55. > :19:01.start. This front group of four now about to be caught by the chasers.
:19:02. > :19:07.Remember, Helen Jenkins is with this front group, wearing number three.
:19:08. > :19:12.Now, what will Jenkins be thinking? Will she be thinking, hold your
:19:13. > :19:17.nerve, stay with this group? Or will she be wanting to force their way to
:19:18. > :19:20.the group, stretched the lead, put pressure on Jodie Stimpson? Helen
:19:21. > :19:25.Jenkins is an athlete who likes to race from the front, so I expect to
:19:26. > :19:29.see her at there very soon. At the moment, she will not have a clear
:19:30. > :19:36.idea of where Jodie is, and neither have we, we have not seen the second
:19:37. > :19:39.back come out of the swim, but there are quite a few chances to be able
:19:40. > :19:43.to see where everybody is, lots of out and backs, so the motivation for
:19:44. > :19:49.both the front and the second back, because they can see the work they
:19:50. > :19:55.have got to do. Katie Zaferes, 34, third in this race a year ago. She
:19:56. > :20:00.was second in London, second in Stockholm, she had a cracking
:20:01. > :20:05.season, second in Abu Dhabi, and in Auckland as well. But for ever in
:20:06. > :20:09.the shadow of Gwen Jorgensen. Andrea Hewitt, consistently the best of the
:20:10. > :20:17.New Zealanders in the last three or four seasons. And she's currently
:20:18. > :20:19.taking H at the front of the field. Now, we have got the timings
:20:20. > :20:26.through, Jodie Stimpson crossed the line at the end of lap one in 20
:20:27. > :20:34.Seventh Place, about 40 seconds off the pace, so Stimpson is a long way
:20:35. > :20:38.behind Jenkins after the first lap. -- 27th place. They are heading
:20:39. > :20:43.inland for a more narrow section, up the hill, not a particularly stiff
:20:44. > :20:47.climb, but the riders are forced out of the saddle as Andrea Hewitt
:20:48. > :20:51.injects a bit of pace to try and consolidate the break she is
:20:52. > :20:57.attempting to make alongside Flora Duffy. There is number one, Jodie
:20:58. > :21:00.Stimpson, we are back with the win of the Abu Dhabi triathlon,
:21:01. > :21:05.Stimpson, you can see the effigy is putting in. She has been regularly
:21:06. > :21:10.out in front, she is barking instructions to those alongside her.
:21:11. > :21:14.Sara Vilic of Austria takes her turn at the front, Stimpson wants some
:21:15. > :21:20.help, she needs some assistance if she is to bridge the gap, which is
:21:21. > :21:25.around 40 seconds to a great rival, Helen Jenkins, who has had a much
:21:26. > :21:29.better start. The chase group now more than one minute behind. The red
:21:30. > :21:34.dot indicates the leaders, who are finishing their inland stretch. The
:21:35. > :21:41.blue dot indicates where the chasers are, just heading up the hill on the
:21:42. > :21:44.inland section. Helen Jenkins there now leading this race, wearing
:21:45. > :21:49.number three, currently ranked number three. Jodie Stimpson is one
:21:50. > :21:54.minutes down, Matt, a lot of work to do. Ashleigh Gentle on the front now
:21:55. > :21:58.with Jodie Stimpson on her wheel, Gentle finished second in Abu Dhabi,
:21:59. > :22:02.she rode incredibly hard with the current Olympic champion, riding
:22:03. > :22:07.hard for a whole 35 kilometres, bridging the gap. Gentle is a great
:22:08. > :22:11.rider, Stimpson, Jackson from Australia, this is a big pack, and I
:22:12. > :22:15.cannot see them working well together to break down the deficit,
:22:16. > :22:19.which is now over a minute to the front back. Just about every time we
:22:20. > :22:24.have had a shot of the front of the chase back it has been Jodie doing
:22:25. > :22:28.all the work on her own at the front. She is joined by Marie Rabie
:22:29. > :22:32.from South Africa, her training partner, and she may be getting
:22:33. > :22:38.support from her. Helen Jenkins really pushing the pace, no letup as
:22:39. > :22:42.we come towards the end of the second lap. So Jenkins of Great
:22:43. > :22:49.Britain, alongside Flora Duffy, Rachel Klamer, Kirsten Kasper, Erin
:22:50. > :22:56.Densham, Andrea Hewitt, Nicky Samuels, Sarah True, then Gwen
:22:57. > :23:03.Jorgensen. The three big-name Americans are all in that group,
:23:04. > :23:08.Takahashi, Taylor Spivey, Ackermann, Clark, Backhouse is just a few
:23:09. > :23:14.seconds removed. A total of 19 officially in that lead group. So
:23:15. > :23:23.the Stimpson group has made a slight dent in Helen Jenkins's group lead,
:23:24. > :23:29.but it is not a significant dent. So the race continues to have its
:23:30. > :23:30.twists and turns. We talked about British Olympic selection, with
:23:31. > :23:39.Nicky Holland and Non Stanford already confirmed as the first two
:23:40. > :23:42.of three Olympic triathletes to be joined by one other, potentially
:23:43. > :23:49.Helen Jenkins, potentially Jodie Stimpson. And the official line is
:23:50. > :23:54.that Jenkins, who we see in picture at the moment, we'll need to finish
:23:55. > :23:58.on the podium, or Stimpson will need to finish on the podium. They could
:23:59. > :24:03.change their mind and take a support athlete a little later, but you
:24:04. > :24:10.would have to think that if Helen Jenkins goes on to finish in amongst
:24:11. > :24:13.the top five today, and is clear of Jodie Stimpson, that she will have
:24:14. > :24:18.done enough to cement their place in Rio. But there are discretionary
:24:19. > :24:23.options available to the Olympic selectors. It is certainly not easy
:24:24. > :24:28.for them at all, Jodie Stimpson has been proving year after year that
:24:29. > :24:32.she is a quality athlete, and she could be an Olympic medallist
:24:33. > :24:36.potentially. Helen Jenkins, of course, has all the experience, and
:24:37. > :24:47.when she is on top form, she is one of the best triathletes in the
:24:48. > :24:49.world. Tricky times for the selectors, we do not know what is
:24:50. > :24:52.going to happen in this race yet, but it is playing into the hands of
:24:53. > :24:54.Helen Jenkins. The helicopter bringing us these pictures, swooping
:24:55. > :25:00.in across the harbour on the Gold Coast, picking up the lead three.
:25:01. > :25:08.And this course here in Australia is more similar to the Rio Olympic
:25:09. > :25:13.course than any of the other events that they will race in on the World
:25:14. > :25:20.Triathlon Series this summer. Yeah, I think in terms of the water, the
:25:21. > :25:23.kind of race they will expect in the water, non-wetsuit, ocean swim,
:25:24. > :25:29.slightly choppy, and a tough, demanding bike, although there is a
:25:30. > :25:33.bigger hill on the course in Rio. But the run is very similar, flat,
:25:34. > :25:38.hot and humid, perhaps not quite as humid as the Gold Coast, because in
:25:39. > :25:42.Rio we will be heading into autumn, but still pretty warm.
:25:43. > :25:46.Interestingly, Jodie Stimpson and Helen Jenkins will have just come I
:25:47. > :25:52.do I with each other, one heading in One Direction, the other still
:25:53. > :26:01.chasing her tail, with Jenkins just chasing over her shoulder to see how
:26:02. > :26:07.much damage she and Duffy and Hewitt have done with this breakaway at the
:26:08. > :26:11.start of the field. It is not a decisive break, but looking like a
:26:12. > :26:15.positive move from this trio, they have done some damage after getting
:26:16. > :26:21.on for 49 and a half minutes of this triathlon. They are about to
:26:22. > :26:25.complete lap four, so we are halfway through the cycle stage, and the
:26:26. > :26:29.race has a new complexion and it compared to the end of lap three,
:26:30. > :26:34.when a massive group came into its together. Three coming together now,
:26:35. > :26:38.Flora Duffy of Bermuda, Andrea Hewitt of New Zealand, and Helen
:26:39. > :26:46.Jenkins of Great Britain. The gap that they have opened up to the next
:26:47. > :26:54.group of a dozen is nine seconds. Zaferes, Moffatt, Kasper, Clark,
:26:55. > :27:01.Jorgensen. Sarah True and Yuko Takahashi are in that group,
:27:02. > :27:05.alongside Klamer, Ackermann, Santos. The lead group out on their own now,
:27:06. > :27:12.so far, tactically, Helen Jenkins has delivered a masterclass. And,
:27:13. > :27:19.meanwhile, Jodie Stimpson, I think, as tucked in towards the back of the
:27:20. > :27:24.chasing group, and the gap, I think, is now significantly larger than it
:27:25. > :27:31.was at the end of lap four. We will get an official time in a moment.
:27:32. > :27:38.But it is a big gap, and Stimpson is no longer at the front. More pace
:27:39. > :27:45.from Jenkins. I guess she is now beginning to think that she may have
:27:46. > :27:50.won the battle with Stimpson. Can she go on and win the battle with
:27:51. > :27:58.Jorgensen? For victory in this race? And rubber-stamp the Olympic
:27:59. > :28:04.credentials? Well, we have seen Gwen race just once, this year, in one of
:28:05. > :28:09.the World Cup events in New Plymouth in New Zealand, where she won.
:28:10. > :28:13.Andrea Hewitt was second, just 22 seconds behind Gwen Jorgensen, but
:28:14. > :28:18.that was over the sprint distance, just five kilometres. We have not
:28:19. > :28:23.yet seen Gwen race over the 10,000 metres, I imagine that she is as
:28:24. > :28:28.strong as ever, she has had a great winter season in training. But at
:28:29. > :28:32.the moment, Matt, one little breakaway here, and the group that
:28:33. > :28:37.are now trailing by around 20 seconds. Andrea Hewitt is having an
:28:38. > :28:40.incredible race, because let's not forget, she has been through a
:28:41. > :28:46.really difficult time, losing her boyfriend last year in November,
:28:47. > :28:51.very sadly, had a heart attack, having already suffered some heart
:28:52. > :28:55.problems. The latest news we have on the battle between Jenkins and
:28:56. > :28:59.Stimpson is that Jenkins has established a lead of 90 seconds. We
:29:00. > :29:03.will get confirmation of that in around 90 seconds from now, because
:29:04. > :29:09.Duffy, Jenkins and Hewitt have crossed the line to complete lap
:29:10. > :29:19.five with three to go. And there is a British flag waving to encourage
:29:20. > :29:25.Helen Jenkins. And they had out to get stuck into lap six, the clock
:29:26. > :29:30.ticking on. So this is the chase group, and this group does not
:29:31. > :29:34.contain Jodie Stimpson, this contains Gwen Jorgensen, Densham,
:29:35. > :29:42.Samuels, plenty of others with Olympic aspirations. They are
:29:43. > :29:46.between 26 and 30 seconds off the pace, the clock continues to take to
:29:47. > :29:52.the group which contains Jodie Stimpson, and the last official
:29:53. > :29:57.timing that we have on that was that Stimpson was one minute and a half
:29:58. > :30:01.off the pace. We are riding alongside Gwen Jorgensen now, and
:30:02. > :30:07.she is barking instructions to her fellow riders. She will be out where
:30:08. > :30:12.now that the gap between her and the leading three was getting towards 30
:30:13. > :30:14.seconds, she does not want to leave herself too much to do if she wants
:30:15. > :30:23.to win this race today. She doesn't look comfortable on the
:30:24. > :30:28.bicycle, does she? Looks a bit awkward, sitting a bit far behind
:30:29. > :30:31.and not totally relaxed. Helen Jenkins and Flora Duffy are totally
:30:32. > :30:39.relaxed, slightly forward on the front of the seat. Now the chase
:30:40. > :30:42.group, 37 seconds down. Helen Jenkins and Andrea Hewitt and Flora
:30:43. > :30:49.Duffy doing some great work there together. The breakaway has been
:30:50. > :30:55.beautifully executed by those three. They seized their opportunity. And
:30:56. > :31:03.it was planned and executed perfectly. They have completed six
:31:04. > :31:09.of the eight laps, so just ten kilometres left to right. So far it
:31:10. > :31:14.has been a dominant performance from Flora Duffy, Andrea Hewitt and Helen
:31:15. > :31:20.Jenkins, as they launch their individual quests for success and
:31:21. > :31:24.Olympic selection. We will check on the time difference between Helen
:31:25. > :31:28.Jenkins and the Gwen Jorgensen group first of all and a little later
:31:29. > :31:33.between Helen Jenkins and the Jodie Stimpson group. The Gwen Jorgensen
:31:34. > :31:40.group coming towards transition now. Getting on for 45 seconds
:31:41. > :31:46.thereabouts, that is the gap between the leaders and the chasers. More
:31:47. > :31:52.damage done at lap six. 44 seconds to the Gwen Jorgensen group which
:31:53. > :31:55.also includes Sarah True, Kasper, Katie Zaferes. Gwen Jorgensen
:31:56. > :32:01.officially in 11th place at the moment. Taylor Spivey number 47,
:32:02. > :32:05.another American in the group. Lots of stars and stripes coming through
:32:06. > :32:15.among the 15 riders in group member two. This is the Jodie Stimpson
:32:16. > :32:25.group. Goodness me. The gap is huge now. Two minutes exactly between the
:32:26. > :32:36.two British triathletes in this race today. Jenkins and Stimpson. Two
:32:37. > :32:39.minutes separate them. Back now with Helen Jenkins, Andrea Hewitt and
:32:40. > :32:44.Flora Duffy, who have really taken a bit of a risk that it has paid off.
:32:45. > :32:49.They find themselves a good 50 seconds in front of the chase group
:32:50. > :32:53.now, which of course contains Gwen Jorgensen, unbeaten in the last 13
:32:54. > :32:57.races. These girls will still have to work pretty hard and still keep
:32:58. > :33:04.pushing the pace, because they need to come back into transition two
:33:05. > :33:09.with a good 75 or 90 seconds in front of Gwen Jorgensen because she
:33:10. > :33:15.is capable of pulling back that kind of time, even with the likes of
:33:16. > :33:19.Andrea Hewitt and Jenkins who are such strong runners. Flora Duffy has
:33:20. > :33:25.improved running but of the three out in Frenchie is probably the
:33:26. > :33:34.runner. The three leaders inject further pace. They have done damage
:33:35. > :33:41.on every lap. The gap to the Gwen Jorgensen group has grown. Last time
:33:42. > :33:45.Gwen Jorgensen was beaten was in Cape Town, 2014, and on that day she
:33:46. > :33:52.was beaten by the two British triathletes, Jodie Stimpson winning
:33:53. > :33:57.the race and Helen Jenkins coming in second and Gwen Jorgensen in third.
:33:58. > :34:03.Cape Town early two years ago, the last time Gwen Jorgensen lost a
:34:04. > :34:08.race. The end of lap seven, after an hour and 12.5 minutes, no change at
:34:09. > :34:13.the front. Duffy, Hewitt, Jenkins, starting to sense that a podium
:34:14. > :34:18.place might be on offer today. The clock ticking on as we get a check
:34:19. > :34:23.on the time difference between the leading three and the chasing group,
:34:24. > :34:28.the Gwen Jorgensen group, and already 20 seconds as they move up
:34:29. > :34:32.out of the saddle, looking for a little injection of pace on the exit
:34:33. > :34:37.of transition. The gap to the chasers is now 30 seconds and
:34:38. > :34:43.growing. Here they come, the Gwen Jorgensen group, coming towards
:34:44. > :34:49.transition. We will get an idea of what Gwen Jorgensen will need to do
:34:50. > :34:56.on the 10,000 metres run if she is to claim her 13th straight World
:34:57. > :35:00.Triathlon Series win. More than a minute, getting up towards a minute
:35:01. > :35:05.and a quarter, possibly more than that, between the leaders and the
:35:06. > :35:11.chasers. One minute 17 as they take the bell. One minute and 17 seconds,
:35:12. > :35:15.and it could be there or thereabouts. Maybe one minute and 20
:35:16. > :35:19.by the end of the final lap. That is the way the race has unfolded
:35:20. > :35:28.between the leading three and the chasing group. Five seconds, then
:35:29. > :35:34.27, then 43, then 76 seconds. A masterclass in controlled aggression
:35:35. > :35:39.from these three. The way they have moved up the pace, lap after lap,
:35:40. > :35:44.and they are approaching the end of the final circuit now, as Helen
:35:45. > :35:50.Jenkins just cools herself down with the last drops in that water bottle.
:35:51. > :35:53.Here we go, into transition for the final time at the end of lap number
:35:54. > :36:08.eight. After an hour and 20 minutes,
:36:09. > :36:12.getting on for a hour and 21 minutes since the triathlon began. Hewitt on
:36:13. > :36:16.the left, Duffy on the right, Jenkins just behind. One hour, 20
:36:17. > :36:22.minutes and 32 seconds as they hit the transition area. We will focus
:36:23. > :36:27.on Helen Jenkins. To gets the front wheel into the stand, and clips the
:36:28. > :36:32.bike helmet. Duffy's she was going on. Who will be first to rise from
:36:33. > :36:37.transition? It is Helen Jenkins, leaving the transition ahead of
:36:38. > :36:41.Flora Duffy and Andrea Hewitt. Actually pretty good transition work
:36:42. > :36:47.from all three. They will be shoulder to shoulder heading out on
:36:48. > :36:55.lap one of four. Four 2.5 kilometre laps to conclude, a total of 10,000
:36:56. > :36:58.metres. That lies between Helen Jenkins and potential victory and
:36:59. > :37:02.guaranteed Olympic selection. The second pack coming in now and
:37:03. > :37:10.looking at the time on the clock we are looking at round about just over
:37:11. > :37:15.1.30. We said she would need 90 seconds, and he has exactly that.
:37:16. > :37:19.Kasper on the left but we will be keeping an eye on Gwen Jorgensen,
:37:20. > :37:23.who arrives at her stand, the world number one. The right shoe goes on,
:37:24. > :37:28.the left shoe, bike helmet off and into the box. Gwen Jorgensen is not
:37:29. > :37:32.the first to rise from transition but near the lead and it will not be
:37:33. > :37:40.long before she forces her way to the front of this chase group. She
:37:41. > :37:45.will have Katie Zaferes, Sarah True and Taylor Spivey for company and
:37:46. > :37:48.Kasper as well. Out in front, Helen Jenkins has attempted to make a
:37:49. > :37:54.break right at the start of the 10,000 metre run. She has a couple
:37:55. > :38:00.of metres over Flora Duffy in second, who in turn has a couple of
:38:01. > :38:05.metres over Andrea Hewitt in third. Now the Jodie Stimpson group arrive
:38:06. > :38:09.in triathlon. Stimpson on the left of screen, tripping up over one of
:38:10. > :38:14.the shoes on her pedals. She does have a history in this department. I
:38:15. > :38:24.have an image of that happening. A bit of deja vu from Yokohama in 2014
:38:25. > :38:28.when a similar thing happened. With not such important consequences.
:38:29. > :38:33.Stimpson breaks third from her group in transition but she is a mile
:38:34. > :38:38.behind her compatriot, Helen Jenkins. What a run it has been so
:38:39. > :38:43.far for Jenkins. She has broken the back of her opponents with whom she
:38:44. > :38:48.rode for most of the 40 kilometre ride, within the first five
:38:49. > :38:52.kilometres here. Terrific start to stage three of this triathlon for
:38:53. > :38:56.Helen Jenkins. She has gone out hard but I hope not too hard. She is an
:38:57. > :39:00.experienced athlete and she knows what she is doing. She looks like
:39:01. > :39:06.she is running a three kilometre race, not ten at the moment. Jodie
:39:07. > :39:10.Stimpson leading the second pack but all she can do is try to chase some
:39:11. > :39:16.of the slower runners in that second pack. Gwen Jorgensen goes to work,
:39:17. > :39:23.further back along the row, trying to bridge the gap towards the
:39:24. > :39:31.leading three. Her winning streak, 12 in a row of the last dozen races
:39:32. > :39:38.that she has entered, she has won all of them. First run lap of four
:39:39. > :39:44.competed for Helen Jenkins, total time of one hour, 29 minutes and ten
:39:45. > :39:50.seconds. That gives her a gap of 19 seconds over Andrea Hewitt, who has
:39:51. > :39:58.a three second gap over Flora Duffy. One lap down, three to go. Gwen
:39:59. > :40:03.Jorgensen arrives in transition. She is completing her first lap. At the
:40:04. > :40:09.end of the bike stage the gap between Jenkins and Gwen Jorgensen
:40:10. > :40:14.was one and a half minutes, slightly more than that. I will look at the
:40:15. > :40:19.time difference now and I don't think Gwen Jorgensen has done any
:40:20. > :40:31.damage. I think the gap may actually have grown by a second or more. No.
:40:32. > :40:38.In fact it is just about flat. 11:31, taking into account the time
:40:39. > :40:43.she went through transition, and Gwen Jorgensen has made a slight
:40:44. > :40:56.dent in Jenkins's lead but not significant in any way. -- 1:30 one.
:40:57. > :41:04.It is a long time since San Diego, 2012, and it has been a long time to
:41:05. > :41:09.wait to strike gold for Helen Jenkins. It could come on the Gold
:41:10. > :41:14.Coast. Flora Duffy in third. She will be keeping an eye over her
:41:15. > :41:18.shoulder for the approaching figure of Gwen Jorgensen, who may not do
:41:19. > :41:22.enough to go on to win today but she will still be hoping to get in
:41:23. > :41:31.amongst the podium action. Gwen Jorgensen starting to attempt to eat
:41:32. > :41:39.into the lead that Helen Jenkins had at the end of lap one. One minute
:41:40. > :41:48.and 29 seconds, it was. And now the first to arrive halfway through the
:41:49. > :41:53.run, after one hour, 37 minutes and 30 seconds, Helen Jenkins, the
:41:54. > :41:57.former World Champion, the former British number one, is looking to
:41:58. > :42:05.cement her place within the Olympic team in Rio in August. If she does,
:42:06. > :42:11.it will be her third Olympic Games. Can she get there this time in good
:42:12. > :42:15.shape? Avoiding any further injury and illness. She is being warmly
:42:16. > :42:21.applauded by a number of British fans here, aware of the significance
:42:22. > :42:29.of what she has achieved today. She crosses the line to complete a two
:42:30. > :42:32.of four and she will get another check on the gap between Jenkins and
:42:33. > :42:37.Gwen Jorgensen. At the end of the first lap it was one minute and 29
:42:38. > :42:43.seconds. Flora Duffy, crossing the line shortly. She will be in third
:42:44. > :42:52.position. Andrea Hewitt is just ahead of her in second position.
:42:53. > :42:56.Five kilometres to go. Jenkins looks very comfortable indeed still. A
:42:57. > :43:06.long way to go. Five kilometres, less than that now. No sign of Gwen
:43:07. > :43:10.Jorgensen yet. There she goes. She is definitely putting some time into
:43:11. > :43:14.Duffy and Hewitt. I think Duffy can stay away but Hewitt will have to
:43:15. > :43:17.work very hard and Jenkins is charging on and there is no let-up
:43:18. > :43:26.in her pace as she heads towards the end of the third lap with one lap to
:43:27. > :43:32.go of 2.5 kilometres. 2.5 kilometres to run for Helen Jenkins of Great
:43:33. > :43:41.Britain. One hour 46 minutes and 44 seconds so far. A year ago Gwen
:43:42. > :43:49.Jorgensen's winning time was one hour 56 minutes and 59 seconds. Gwen
:43:50. > :43:55.Jorgensen can at best hope for a place on the podium here today as
:43:56. > :44:01.Jenkins heads out on her way on her final lap. We will get an official
:44:02. > :44:03.time check between Jenkins and Gwen Jorgensen, between the British
:44:04. > :44:13.triathlete and the American world number one.
:44:14. > :44:21.Hewitt in second place, for New Zealand. Coming up towards 50
:44:22. > :44:30.seconds or thereabouts before she takes her bell. There it is. 57
:44:31. > :44:33.seconds officially between Jenkins in first and Hewitt in second and
:44:34. > :44:36.Duffy is only five seconds behind Andrea Hewitt. Duffy has found a
:44:37. > :45:00.little bit of pace. Jorgensen has had her best lap so
:45:01. > :45:04.far in terms of hunting down Jenkins, because she has taken a
:45:05. > :45:11.further ten seconds out of the leader's time. It is the Bermudan in
:45:12. > :45:16.red who now takes second place away from Andrea Hewitt, what a terrific
:45:17. > :45:23.fightback from Flora Duffy of Bermuda. Pushed down to third by
:45:24. > :45:27.Hewitt, wasn't finished, decided to greater teeth and fightback, but
:45:28. > :45:36.both Hewitt in third and Duffy in second are facing the looming figure
:45:37. > :45:40.of Gwen Jorgensen, who is on their shoulder practically in the fourth,
:45:41. > :45:45.and closing fast. Meanwhile, Howden front, our leader is Helen Jenkins
:45:46. > :45:53.from Great Britain. -- out in front. The resistance continues from Hewitt
:45:54. > :45:57.and Duffy, doubly determined, with a little bit of help from each other,
:45:58. > :46:03.to fight off this rearguard action from Gwen Jorgensen, who now seems
:46:04. > :46:08.to have found just a little extra modicum of pace as she tries to plug
:46:09. > :46:14.the gap to Duffy and Hewitt, and it seems that further resistance may be
:46:15. > :46:18.futile, because here she comes, Jorgensen has dug deep into her
:46:19. > :46:25.reserves of acceleration and is now on the shoulder of Hewitt deep in
:46:26. > :46:33.the final lap. And Hewitt's heart must sink, as she sees the tall
:46:34. > :46:38.American coming alongside her. Joining her first and then Duffy,
:46:39. > :46:45.but meanwhile, out in front, victory celebrations will begin for Helen
:46:46. > :46:52.Jenkins, who has had the race of her life to seal her position in her
:46:53. > :46:58.third Olympic Games. Maybe it will be time for her first medal this
:46:59. > :47:04.year, the smile is broad, relief is obvious. Helen Jenkins stops to
:47:05. > :47:11.accept the congratulations of those who have gathered to watch her win
:47:12. > :47:17.round two of the 20 World Triathlon Series on the Gold Coast, and win it
:47:18. > :47:22.in style. Jenkins takes the victory in one hour, 56 minutes and three
:47:23. > :47:28.seconds, and thereby she seals her Olympic selection. Meanwhile, Hewitt
:47:29. > :47:32.is not finished yet, she has a battle for second on her hands with
:47:33. > :47:39.Gwen Jorgensen. Jorgensen is not used to this, Jorgensen is still
:47:40. > :47:45.fighting for second place, but Hewitt is responding. Oh, what a
:47:46. > :47:50.finish between the American and the Kiwi, and Jorgensen finally gets the
:47:51. > :47:55.better of Hewitt to take second place. Hewitt will have to settle
:47:56. > :48:03.for third, what a courageous race by Andrea Hewitt. And Duffy will finish
:48:04. > :48:09.down in fourth for Bermuda after a superb performance, but it was all
:48:10. > :48:15.about the battle of the British triathletes today, and Helen Jenkins
:48:16. > :48:22.seals victory on the Gold Coast. What an amazing performance.
:48:23. > :48:23.Confirmation of the final results, a fantastic performance for Helen
:48:24. > :48:39.Jenkins. Jodie Stimpson finished down in 12th
:48:40. > :48:47.position and will have to wait for the Olympic selectors' decision.
:48:48. > :48:51.Helen Jenkins now leads the 2016 standings and of Flora Duffy, Jodie
:48:52. > :48:55.Stimpson is in third, Gentle is fourth, Renee Tomlin is the best of
:48:56. > :49:03.the Americans in fifth. Gwen Jorgensen has moved up to eighth.
:49:04. > :49:08.Your race was phenomenal, taking out Gwen Jorgensen's winning streak!
:49:09. > :49:13.That is amazing. I did not have the best swim, coming to the first buoy,
:49:14. > :49:19.my God, what am I doing? I was way back, I gave myself a bit of a
:49:20. > :49:24.talking to, and I managed to move through next to Gwen by the end of
:49:25. > :49:28.the first lap. On the bike, I mean, Andrea was phenomenal today, I was
:49:29. > :49:33.just hanging on her wheel, me and Flora got a gap, and it's just went.
:49:34. > :49:38.But it was so technical, just as hard sitting in as at the front, but
:49:39. > :49:43.I felt better as it went on, but that bike really hurt! My heart
:49:44. > :49:48.breaks for Jodie, but I think I have done another today. It is so hard, I
:49:49. > :49:54.really feel for her. Our team is so strong. It does not seem fair that
:49:55. > :49:57.she might not be going to the Games. If the British selectors were to
:49:58. > :50:01.take you to your third Olympic Games, it must give you confidence
:50:02. > :50:05.going on to the Rio course. It does, I had better start writing some
:50:06. > :50:12.hills in training! My husband has been smashing me on the bike, thank
:50:13. > :50:19.God he has been riding well, it felt ready. It is or is good to be on the
:50:20. > :50:24.top step, but Helen had a better race, they worked really hard on the
:50:25. > :50:31.bike, they had a better bike than me. You feel with Helen's selection
:50:32. > :50:36.on the line, she really had to push for that now, whereas you know about
:50:37. > :50:40.your selection come August? I was pushing really hard, I never come
:50:41. > :50:44.into a race not wanting to be on the top step. Hopefully that would give
:50:45. > :50:48.me more motivation going into the next one. I congratulate you on
:50:49. > :50:52.second, first is where you have been for so long, but I still look at you
:50:53. > :50:56.as making so many improvements - have you got more to make for real?
:50:57. > :51:03.For sure, I hope I have some improvements to make! I have been
:51:04. > :51:07.working hard, and yeah, I have had a goal, an aspiration to win gold in
:51:08. > :51:13.Rio for four years now, and I'm going to give it everything I have.
:51:14. > :51:18.Andrea Hewitt, Jude congratulations, sprint finish with Gwen Jorgensen. I
:51:19. > :51:22.didn't expect that when I started today! The whole race went well for
:51:23. > :51:26.me, I was not worried about qualification, like some of the
:51:27. > :51:30.other countries, but I was in the breakaway, I had to hang on on the
:51:31. > :51:36.run, but the sprint finish with Gwen, it was a good result. I have
:51:37. > :51:41.always admired your consistency over the years of racing, and coming into
:51:42. > :51:43.an Olympic year, what you are able to produce is truly phenomenal, is
:51:44. > :51:49.this something that you are looking to build upon now through to Rio?
:51:50. > :51:53.Yeah, this year is completely different, I am missing some on this
:51:54. > :51:59.whole year. Around race time, it is really difficult. Before the race
:52:00. > :52:05.and during the race, even now. It is going to be so different. But I am
:52:06. > :52:12.racing for him as well as myself. It was amazing today.
:52:13. > :52:15.And the smile says it all for Helen Jenkins, she came here with a
:52:16. > :52:27.mission to beat Jodie Stimpson. And give the Olympic selectors no
:52:28. > :52:37.choice but to pick her and take her to Rio alongside Non Stanford and
:52:38. > :52:48.Vicky Holland. She has given them no choice with an emphatic victory.
:52:49. > :53:29.Helen Jenkins and certainly stamped her spot-on the team.
:53:30. > :53:33.Look, she has put down such a great performance today, really happy for
:53:34. > :53:39.her, she has said to be selectors, you have got to pick me. We will
:53:40. > :53:42.discuss and next week, but what an outstanding performance. Great
:53:43. > :53:46.Britain is blessed, we have got Jodie as well, who did not have the
:53:47. > :53:51.best race today, but she has pushed them all the way. And how is Jodie?
:53:52. > :53:55.She was quite emotional, but both of the girls of friends and team-mates,
:53:56. > :54:01.but there is always one who will miss out. Yeah, look, we have not
:54:02. > :54:02.made a final decision, but Jodie is obviously very disappointed, because
:54:03. > :54:19.she has not been able to get a best performance
:54:20. > :54:21.out today. We will support her, whatever the outcome, whether it is
:54:22. > :54:24.Olympics or World Series for the rest of the year. The next race is
:54:25. > :54:26.Cape Town, where Non Stanford and Vicky Holland plan to make their
:54:27. > :54:30.season debut. They are already pre-selected for Rio. The World
:54:31. > :54:34.Triathlon Series is coming to Yorkshire, why not come along and
:54:35. > :54:58.take part the day before thanks to Triathlon England?
:54:59. > :55:04.The Olympic Park really is a fabulous venue for Go Tri, and these
:55:05. > :55:08.are great events to get started with the sport, they are fun, they are
:55:09. > :55:12.low-key, and over shorter distances than the triathlon you see on
:55:13. > :55:16.television. This is a 200 metres swim, five Kay on a static bike,
:55:17. > :55:19.then a three-day run. You do not need to buy lots of expensive
:55:20. > :55:24.equipment, so if you think it might be the sport for you, why don't you
:55:25. > :55:31.Go Tri? There are hundreds of events taking place this summer, so as to
:55:32. > :55:35.the BBC website for details of Go Tri knew you. Take a look at the
:55:36. > :55:40.triathlon section of the BBC Sport website for details of the World
:55:41. > :55:41.Triathlon Series in Leeds and the entry details for Go Tri the day
:55:42. > :55:55.before. Victories saw them pre-selected for
:55:56. > :56:00.the British are in big team going to Rio. And a win for Brian Taylor also
:56:01. > :56:06.boosted his hopes of qualifying for the Games, which he will hope to do
:56:07. > :56:10.via the European Championships in May. Back to Gold Coast, and there
:56:11. > :56:13.is just one Olympic spot left open for the men, and this will be
:56:14. > :56:17.selected purely on the basis of being a support role for the
:56:18. > :56:22.Brownlee brothers in their bid for gold in Rio. Emma has been speaking
:56:23. > :56:29.to the leading contenders for that third spot, Tom Bishop and Gordon
:56:30. > :56:33.Benson. It is not obvious to the general
:56:34. > :56:39.public what you need to do, but to us you need to swim at the front,
:56:40. > :56:43.then be at the front on the bike, and ideally you have got to do
:56:44. > :56:47.something that can change the race. You have to pull the breakaway back,
:56:48. > :56:53.pull the boys up to the breakaway, or if you create the breakaway, keep
:56:54. > :56:56.the pace high, stop the second pack coming together, just doing
:56:57. > :57:01.everything we can to support Great Britain. They are really great
:57:02. > :57:05.runners, they just need to get there in good shape, hopefully in a small
:57:06. > :57:12.group, so the competition is less and they can run away a bit. Gordon
:57:13. > :57:16.Benson wins Britain's first-ever gold at the European Games. At the
:57:17. > :57:21.European Games in Baku, I played a role like Gordon, who was also going
:57:22. > :57:25.for this pilot role, he was the team leader, and we did a great job of
:57:26. > :57:31.seeing Gordon through to the run, and we had about a minute, a minute
:57:32. > :57:38.45 on the chase group. Gordon held on for the win. He was not
:57:39. > :57:41.particularly favourite going into the race, but we knew that if we
:57:42. > :57:45.worked together as a team, we would get a medal. We have never thought
:57:46. > :57:50.of triathlon as a team sport. It has definitely changed, and it is the
:57:51. > :57:55.influence of Jonathan and Alistair, the way they run from the front, and
:57:56. > :57:59.it makes sense to have athletes at the front, put the pressure on. I
:58:00. > :58:04.have always liked the idea of racing as a team, like we do in arena
:58:05. > :58:08.races, it is a great feeling when you share success together. OK, I
:58:09. > :58:13.might not stand on top of the podium in Rio, but if I contribute towards
:58:14. > :58:18.that, I will feel just as good. I want other nations to start working
:58:19. > :58:21.as teams, it would make the race more exciting, teams chasing,
:58:22. > :58:29.working against each other. I think it would change the way the sport
:58:30. > :58:33.is. In 2014, I set my eyes on entering this way, it seemed like a
:58:34. > :58:38.great opportunity. Or me, it was an opportunity to go to the big games,
:58:39. > :58:44.aged 22, and not only be there but have a realistic goal, saying I want
:58:45. > :58:47.to win the Olympic Games. At this point in my career, but would not
:58:48. > :58:54.have been realistic, Jonny was 22 when he got bronze, but for me, I am
:58:55. > :59:00.not quite at that stage yet. It allows me to go there with a
:59:01. > :59:05.realistic goal, and I can go and aid the delivery. I just want to go and
:59:06. > :59:09.do the job, and if I can do the job, and the selectors see I can do the
:59:10. > :59:13.best job, I'm confident they will make the right selection, and at the
:59:14. > :59:19.end of the day it is bigger than just one person. The Olympics is
:59:20. > :59:22.about Britain winning the gold medal, the medals again, and if they
:59:23. > :59:27.make the right selection, I will be happy with that. If it is not me,
:59:28. > :59:30.OK, I will be disappointed, but I will know they have made the right
:59:31. > :59:39.decision, it is about winning the gold medal. In UK Sport, it is about
:59:40. > :59:43.winning medals, and I think that is good, rather than placing three
:59:44. > :59:47.athletes in the top 20 to deliver two to the highest possible
:59:48. > :59:52.standard, I think the support role as a great opportunity for them, and
:59:53. > :59:56.at the end of the day it is about the Olympics if we get the chance.
:59:57. > :00:02.We think we are stronger as a team, and stronger united.
:00:03. > :00:07.A big race for Tom and Gordon, as it is for their two team-mates who are
:00:08. > :00:28.making their season debut. Alistair takes to win! Jonny wins in
:00:29. > :00:37.Stockholm. It is brother against brother. It is a sprint finish
:00:38. > :00:42.between the brothers. What a race. I really wanted to start my season in
:00:43. > :00:47.the Gold Coast. I think it fitted in well with my programme. The big race
:00:48. > :00:50.is in Rio in a few months, but it was important for me after a long
:00:51. > :00:53.winter of training to get out and race. I haven't raised enough over
:00:54. > :00:59.the last three years and I wanted to make sure I was confident in my body
:01:00. > :01:03.and racing ability by racing in the early part of the season and then
:01:04. > :01:07.having a good block of training leading up to Rio. Gold Coast is
:01:08. > :01:11.fantastic to have a couple of weeks of nice and warm training, and it
:01:12. > :01:17.brings back memories of winning the world title in 2009 here. That year
:01:18. > :01:21.was probably the best triathlon I have ever done as an all-round
:01:22. > :01:26.complete triathlon. Let's go and do something similar. I want to go to
:01:27. > :01:30.Gold Coast because it is a sea swim and it will be in Rio as well and in
:01:31. > :01:36.the Olympics I want to take off every box possible, so if I take
:01:37. > :01:40.that box it is great. There is a fine line between staying fit and
:01:41. > :01:45.wanting to beat everyone in the season, trying to beat everyone. It
:01:46. > :01:50.is all about Rio. Four years ago in London you had a third man in the
:01:51. > :01:54.team, the support athletes Stuart Hayes. Would you like that in Rio?
:01:55. > :01:59.Yes, that is something I definitely want to see. I am a strong believer
:02:00. > :02:03.that you take the best team to go to the Olympics. The Olympic Games is
:02:04. > :02:07.about winning medals, simple as that. Alistair and myself have been
:02:08. > :02:11.selected already so the next person is someone who can help us win a
:02:12. > :02:15.medal and on that Rio course it could be achieved. Somebody could do
:02:16. > :02:20.a very good job. There is definitely an element of trust. That is very
:02:21. > :02:24.important. They have to make sure they are dedicating themselves to
:02:25. > :02:27.the role and that in the race they will not pull a fast one and they
:02:28. > :02:30.will do what they are supposed to be doing, and in the lead up to the
:02:31. > :02:37.training that they will train as hard as they can. Whether you have
:02:38. > :02:41.to get on with them, that is a different argument. There does not
:02:42. > :02:45.have to be an element of friendship. A domestic could have a massive
:02:46. > :02:50.impact on the race in Rio on that kind of course, swimming out at the
:02:51. > :02:54.front, riding hard in the first couple of laps, that is the best
:02:55. > :02:59.possible scenario for us. If the rate is split up and it is hard and
:03:00. > :03:03.we are in a group after the first couple of laps, it doesn't get much
:03:04. > :03:08.better than that for us. Alistair and Jonny as well as the first two
:03:09. > :03:15.from the opening race in Abu Dhabi, Mario Mola, and Richard Murray, now
:03:16. > :03:18.here are the highlights. This is the start list and the
:03:19. > :03:23.Brownlee brothers do not appear on the first couple of pages because
:03:24. > :03:28.they were absent in round one. They are wearing number 33 for Alistair
:03:29. > :03:33.and 36 the Jonny. There are two other British triathlete in the
:03:34. > :03:38.field, Tom Bishop and Gordon Benson, wearing 26 and 53 respectively. They
:03:39. > :03:45.are battling for the opportunity to compete in Rio as a pilot athlete
:03:46. > :03:52.for the already pre-selected Brownlee brothers. In other words,
:03:53. > :03:58.the utility athlete to aid and abet the Brownlee brothers and their
:03:59. > :04:02.cause for potential Olympic gold and silver. They achieved gold and
:04:03. > :04:09.bronze in Hyde Park in London 2012 and they are looking to go better in
:04:10. > :04:16.Rio 2016. Round two of the 2016 men's World Triathlon Series is
:04:17. > :04:21.about to get under way. A return to competition for both the Brownlee
:04:22. > :04:23.brothers. The Olympic champion Alistair, the Olympic bronze
:04:24. > :04:35.medallist Jonathan, based in the field today. -- both in the field
:04:36. > :04:41.today among this troupe of 67 athletes, who make a wonderful
:04:42. > :04:46.world. . Whitewater flares up as the races attack the warm, relatively
:04:47. > :04:54.flat and buoyant waters of the Gold Coast harbour. We will expect to see
:04:55. > :04:58.good swimming from Alistair and Jonathan because they are the best
:04:59. > :05:03.in the world, but what can we expect from Tom Bishop and Gordon Benson?
:05:04. > :05:06.They need to be in the front group coming out of the water. Absolutely.
:05:07. > :05:11.Benson and Bishop are looking individually to go as the pilot
:05:12. > :05:15.athlete alongside Alistair Brownlee and Jonny Brownlee to help them in
:05:16. > :05:20.Rio, so they really need to make the front pack in this swim, which will
:05:21. > :05:25.be tricky. This swimming today will be on today. The sea conditions have
:05:26. > :05:29.changed since the women's race. It is choppy, a bit tougher for the
:05:30. > :05:38.weaker swimmers, and we have got a phenomenal field here, with the
:05:39. > :05:44.likes of Dmitry Polyanskiy and his brother. Several great swimmers. And
:05:45. > :05:50.I can see them pushing the pace in a swim. Benson and Bishop are going to
:05:51. > :05:57.have to try and hang on. It looks like we have got a pincer movement
:05:58. > :06:01.between the lone swimmer at the top of your screen and the one closest
:06:02. > :06:06.to us. They seem to be merging towards each other as they make the
:06:07. > :06:13.first turn. The Brownlee brothers, Alistair in number 33 and Jonny in
:06:14. > :06:21.number 36, will be somewhere near this lead group. An interesting
:06:22. > :06:26.tactic from Richard, swimming in that single lane at the top, keeping
:06:27. > :06:30.clear of the trouble below. He has gone very wide. He must know
:06:31. > :06:33.something we don't. There are some currents here, and he could have
:06:34. > :06:39.inside information from the locals. Richard Varga hitting the boy at
:06:40. > :06:46.virtually the same time as Henri Schoeman. Keeping out of trouble.
:06:47. > :06:51.Now there is some congestion. Somebody got punched in the back of
:06:52. > :06:54.the head. This is where it is difficult to really keep control and
:06:55. > :06:59.everybody has got to be on their guard. There are jet skis and paddle
:07:00. > :07:06.boards around with medics on them just in case of accidents. But it
:07:07. > :07:10.looks like so far we have got away unscathed, but we have even seen a
:07:11. > :07:16.leech triathletes hauled out of the water following contact with their
:07:17. > :07:23.opponents. -- a leech triathletes. The first turn in the water can be
:07:24. > :07:27.difficult. Looking out for the two British boys vying for the
:07:28. > :07:32.opportunity to act as pilot races for the Brownlee brothers in the
:07:33. > :07:39.Olympic Games. Tom Bishop, 26, and Gordon Benson who won the European
:07:40. > :07:45.games in Azerbaijan last summer, wearing number 53. Benson ironically
:07:46. > :07:50.was helped by Bishop. Bishop was his pilot during that race last summer.
:07:51. > :07:55.But there are no team orders today. The battle for the chance to take
:07:56. > :07:58.the third Olympic spot. They just need to perform well and prove that
:07:59. > :08:04.they can be a valuable pilot partner for the Brownlee brothers when they
:08:05. > :08:11.had to the Olympic Games in August in Rio.
:08:12. > :08:20.Richard Varga has taken the lead from Henri Schoeman. Possibly ruing
:08:21. > :08:25.that decision to go high of the group at the start. I am not sure it
:08:26. > :08:29.paid off for Richard Varga. We would have expected him to be first at the
:08:30. > :08:33.turn but he had to bide his time before he made his move up through
:08:34. > :08:37.the field to take first position away from Henri Schoeman. He is a
:08:38. > :08:43.good swimmer but no match for Richard Varga when Richard Varga is

:09:01. > :09:04.the carpeted ramp and turn left and dive back in in front of the group

:09:09. > :09:15.Hopefully the timing system will be working and we can get a full check
:09:16. > :09:19.on exactly who is where two thirds of the way through the swim after
:09:20. > :09:23.the long lap. There is no doubt that it is Richard Varga followed by
:09:24. > :09:31.Henri Schuman, followed by Alistair Brownlee. Is it Jonny actually? I
:09:32. > :09:41.think Jonny came out third. Then Igor Polyanskiy, and then two behind
:09:42. > :09:49.Dmitry Polyanskiy, his brother, and where is Alistair? Joe Maloy.
:09:50. > :09:52.Alistair is in 16th position. 12 seconds off the pace, nothing to
:09:53. > :09:57.panic about. Very much in contention. Though many athletes
:09:58. > :10:02.within 20 seconds of each other. It could be that if it stays like this,
:10:03. > :10:05.there could be a big group of riders forming for the start of the 40
:10:06. > :10:12.kilometres cycle around the streets of the Gold Coast. Have to pick up
:10:13. > :10:16.on Tom Bishop there, on the heels of Alistair Brownlee, so having a great
:10:17. > :10:20.swim so far. He has certainly worked very hard on the swimming, and he
:10:21. > :10:25.has worked hard on his swimming and biking. A great swim for Bishop,
:10:26. > :10:32.just behind Alistair Brownlee following the first 1000 metre lap.
:10:33. > :10:41.There is the X point of swim. Good crowds coming out. -- there is the

:10:46. > :10:54.not be penalised for but it reduces his aerodynamic efficiency very
:10:55. > :10:58.slightly, Henri Schoeman. But he has had a good swim and it will not be
:10:59. > :11:03.long before he finds his feet on the soft sand and comes out of the
:11:04. > :11:07.water. Richard Varga making his way towards transition to start stage
:11:08. > :11:15.two. A really fast swim, goodness me. Just over 16 minutes. Henri
:11:16. > :11:18.Schuman and Richard Varga leave the water shoulder to shoulder, followed
:11:19. > :11:22.by the younger of the Brownlee brothers, Jonny, in third position.
:11:23. > :11:27.He has had a good start. We will keep an eye out for the rest of the
:11:28. > :11:31.British contingent. Alistair was in 12th, followed by Tom Bishop. Where
:11:32. > :11:38.has Gordon Benson found himself at the end of stage one? Alistair comes
:11:39. > :11:45.out in 15, Benjamin Shaw in 13, Atkinson, Joe Maloy, Tom Bishop is
:11:46. > :11:49.close to Alistair Brownlee. He is 20th at the moment. Still no sign of
:11:50. > :11:57.Gordon Benson, the fourth and final Union Jack will be alongside the
:11:58. > :12:00.name of Gordon Benson. Richard Murray, one of the prerace
:12:01. > :12:05.favourites in the early 30s coming out of the water. Good swim for him,
:12:06. > :12:09.only 30 seconds down. That was an incredible swim. I don't know if it
:12:10. > :12:14.was slightly short, but 60 minutes is over one minute faster than what
:12:15. > :12:18.they swam last year. This is a slightly different course but 16
:12:19. > :12:24.minutes is as fast as it is going to get on the Gold Coast. Alistair is
:12:25. > :12:30.behind. That is where he went down. Goodness me. A slip onto his
:12:31. > :12:35.backside for Alistair Brownlee. On the way out of transition. He has
:12:36. > :12:41.just had ankle surgery. I do hope he hasn't done any damage with that
:12:42. > :12:45.slip on the carpet. That could of course result in a back injury, a
:12:46. > :12:49.hand injury, so we will keep you posted that any news from Alistair
:12:50. > :12:53.Brownlee. Hopefully we will get a shot of him in the second pack
:12:54. > :12:57.racing and looking comfortable, but that was a tricky transition for the
:12:58. > :13:04.Olympic champion. Terrific pace at the front of this bike stage
:13:05. > :13:08.already. The front group not messing about. They have sensed an
:13:09. > :13:13.opportunity and they are keen to work hard and consolidate the lead
:13:14. > :13:21.that they feel they have earned by virtue of a fast swim. Squeaky
:13:22. > :13:28.brakes as the athletes ease off the pace for the turn. Lots of gauging
:13:29. > :13:32.of opposite numbers and team-mates as they crisscross, going in either
:13:33. > :13:38.direction, up and down the streets of the Gold Coast in Queensland,
:13:39. > :13:45.Australia. What a beautiful afternoon in this seaside city. It
:13:46. > :13:49.is going to be interesting to see what job Tom Bishop can do to help
:13:50. > :13:52.Alistair Brownlee because he is in the second chase pack with Alistair
:13:53. > :13:56.Brownlee. His job of course hopefully, fingers crossed, is going
:13:57. > :14:01.to be alongside the Brownlee brothers, helping them in Rio. As we
:14:02. > :14:04.can see now, Bishop and Brownlee side-by-side in the chase pack and
:14:05. > :14:10.Bradley in good company because Richard Murray from South Africa is
:14:11. > :14:17.also there, renowned for being a strong cyclist. -- Brownlee in good
:14:18. > :14:21.company. We will assume that Alistair has not done any serious
:14:22. > :14:25.damage during that slip in transition. He is alongside Tom
:14:26. > :14:29.Bishop, whose job is now clear, to assist Alistair Brownlee in his
:14:30. > :14:34.efforts to get up to the lead of this race, where he will find his
:14:35. > :14:39.younger brother Jonathan. The chase group at the moment are struggling
:14:40. > :14:44.to do any damage. They are between 17 and 18 seconds. The lead group
:14:45. > :14:48.signified by the red dot, the chasers by the blue dot, and at the
:14:49. > :14:52.moment 18 seconds looks like a reasonable margin. They are in the
:14:53. > :15:04.middle part of the second lap. There is a clear gap between the
:15:05. > :15:09.leaders and the chasers, we've from east to west across the front of the
:15:10. > :15:13.pack, and you can see Alistair Brownlee, vocal as ever, barking his
:15:14. > :15:18.instructions, orders and words of encouragement to his opponents,
:15:19. > :15:22.trying to end courage them to lift their game, to share the workload.
:15:23. > :15:27.He does not want to be doing it all out in front, he has done it the
:15:28. > :15:32.hard way in Beijing, he really pushed hard in the Olympic Games, a
:15:33. > :15:36.very young man in those days, went on to win the gold four years later.
:15:37. > :15:41.He will hopefully be one of the favourites a further four years down
:15:42. > :15:45.the line as he comes into its third Olympic Games. But not quite going
:15:46. > :15:50.according to plan for this chase group. Now, this is Alistair
:15:51. > :15:56.Brownlee's group, this is what we saw from the front a little while
:15:57. > :16:00.ago, weaving across the road from left to right, not Keane to be
:16:01. > :16:05.forced into making all the pace. Now we are back with the leaders.
:16:06. > :16:11.Interesting tactics, because you want to be going forward, not going
:16:12. > :16:14.from left to right, I am not sure that was Alistair being a bit
:16:15. > :16:26.frustrated because he could not get the other guys to work. Incredible
:16:27. > :16:35.sports facilities, like in all the Australian cities, 50 metre swimming
:16:36. > :16:40.pools everywhere you look! And that is probably just one, or three of a
:16:41. > :16:56.dozen in the city. So at the end of the second lap, Jonathan Brownlee,
:16:57. > :17:01.Fabian other -- Alarza, Schoeman, Knabl, a total of 12, then the gap
:17:02. > :17:07.to the Alistair Brownlee group, which also includes Richard Murray
:17:08. > :17:13.and Tom Bishop. No sign yet of anything from Gordon Benson, oh, he
:17:14. > :17:18.has just appeared on our screen, only 17 seconds off the lead, so
:17:19. > :17:23.Benson, who was not with the front group out of the water, has worked
:17:24. > :17:29.hard to get himself near the front of this race in the first couple of
:17:30. > :17:34.laps on two wheels. These athletes working well, we can see them now,
:17:35. > :17:39.one athlete takes is turn, sitting on the front for no more than a
:17:40. > :17:44.second or two, drops around, the other athletes comes around, it
:17:45. > :17:48.helps to keep the pace on. The last time we got a check on the time
:17:49. > :17:52.difference, it was 17 seconds between the lead group and the chase
:17:53. > :17:58.group. I do not think there has been any significant change to that time
:17:59. > :18:04.difference. 13 seconds, so a small benefit for the chasers. And with
:18:05. > :18:10.Alistair Brownlee dictating things at the front, he seems to have got
:18:11. > :18:15.the bit between his teeth now, Alistair Brownlee, after a slightly
:18:16. > :18:23.troublesome transition. Now he is at the front of the field, and he is
:18:24. > :18:28.leading the charge for the chasers. Just noticed Gordon Benson and Tom
:18:29. > :18:32.Bishop there, tucked in behind Alistair, not taking their turn but
:18:33. > :18:37.helping keep the pace up in the second bag. They have certainly
:18:38. > :18:44.pulled back a little bit of time on this third lap. It seems like only a
:18:45. > :18:48.matter of time before the three distinct groups come together, or
:18:49. > :18:52.will there be a break? Will there be some hard work, a decisive course of
:18:53. > :19:01.action taken at the front of the field to prevent a huge peloton
:19:02. > :19:05.forming it looks increasingly likely that both Brownlee brothers will
:19:06. > :19:10.soon be involved at the head of the field here. Back with the leaders,
:19:11. > :19:16.Polyanskiy at the back with Knabl, where they have been since the
:19:17. > :19:20.start. A little break being attempted by Ben Shaw, the Irishman,
:19:21. > :19:23.who is seeing the chase group looming, trying to do something
:19:24. > :19:30.about it, but no-one else has gone with him at the moment. Coming
:19:31. > :19:37.towards the end of lap three, passed the swimming pool complex, after 38
:19:38. > :19:45.minutes of racing. And it surely will not be long now before the lead
:19:46. > :19:50.group more than doubles in number. But for the moment, we are able to
:19:51. > :19:55.get a cheque on the group of a dozen who lead them through. Confirmation
:19:56. > :20:06.that it is Henri Schoeman, Jonathan Brownlee, Ben Canute, Benjamin Shaw.
:20:07. > :20:16.Alarza is in there, Fabian is involved, Polyanskiy, Knabl, and
:20:17. > :20:26.then the gap to the rest of them. Down to ten seconds now, isn't it?
:20:27. > :20:33.Yeah, from 17 to 13 to ten. Mario Mola obviously feeling stronger, I
:20:34. > :20:38.think he senses this race was really playing into his hands. It is going
:20:39. > :20:41.to be interesting to see Mola and the Brownlees going head to head,
:20:42. > :20:45.something we have not seen for some time. Alistair Brownlee's last
:20:46. > :20:50.proper raised in the World Triathlon Series was in London back in May
:20:51. > :20:55.last year, he won very convincingly. His next race was in Rio, where he
:20:56. > :21:02.finished tenth, and since then we have not seen him race. I can only
:21:03. > :21:06.think it was a shock to the system at the start, and now he has warmed
:21:07. > :21:09.up, he will get into it, and all the months of training will hopefully be
:21:10. > :21:12.paying off. Jonathan Brownlee may have suddenly decided he does not
:21:13. > :21:17.want that chase group to get much closer. He knows that Alistair is in
:21:18. > :21:21.there, and if he is to have a chance of winning and defending the title
:21:22. > :21:27.he won one year ago, he doesn't need Alistair's company at the start of a
:21:28. > :21:32.10,000 metre runner. He could do with there being a cushion, and
:21:33. > :21:35.perhaps now he has decided to act decisively and try and guide of this
:21:36. > :21:41.leading group to a more significant lead. Well, this is certainly going
:21:42. > :21:47.to be an interesting last four laps by the time they come around, half
:21:48. > :21:51.way to go, 20 kilometres, and it is going to be an interesting last 20
:21:52. > :21:56.kilometres on these narrow streets. It really is a technical, technical
:21:57. > :22:02.bike course, one of the best I have seen on the World Triathlon Series,
:22:03. > :22:10.a lot of fun for the viewers and the commentators here! Yeah, single file
:22:11. > :22:13.all the way now, the group is stretched, and the group is large.
:22:14. > :22:22.It is about 30 riders plus from start to finish. Yeah, that is how
:22:23. > :22:28.it has changed, pretty steady between five and ten, but a
:22:29. > :22:32.significant move in lap three, and then at 18 they all came together.
:22:33. > :22:38.Somebody has had a go at the front. I think it is Alistair, but I cannot
:22:39. > :22:42.quite believe that it is! Richard Murray, we are hearing, has had a
:22:43. > :22:46.crash and is out of the race. We didn't see that incident, but maybe
:22:47. > :22:50.we will get a look at it later. You were thinking it might be Alistair
:22:51. > :22:55.but you could not quite believe it. Well, it is Alistair, and you can
:22:56. > :23:00.quite believe it! I love watching this guy race, really hard time,
:23:01. > :23:04.harder than he would like in the swim, he has worked is bad off to
:23:05. > :23:10.get back up into the front back. You know what, guys? I am off! I do not
:23:11. > :23:14.know how long he's going to stay away. He had a hard time in the
:23:15. > :23:20.swim, then he on his backside in a pile in transition, on his way to
:23:21. > :23:31.his bike, so things did not work out, but now he has a gap of five
:23:32. > :23:36.seconds. As we join Alistair Brownlee at the front of the field,
:23:37. > :23:42.it is a triathlon, the Olympic champion, that is a rather old photo
:23:43. > :23:47.they have! You looks about 12 there! He is number 33, because he did not
:23:48. > :23:53.race in Abu Dhabi at the start of the season, he is the Olympic
:23:54. > :23:57.champion, as we know, and he is here to clearly take the win. Now two
:23:58. > :24:01.more have decided to try and take him on and reduce that lead, which
:24:02. > :24:05.seems to be expanding all the time. Could that be younger brother
:24:06. > :24:10.Jonathan and one other? I cannot work out if this is clever or not,
:24:11. > :24:14.because he is going to be putting some work into his legs, it is going
:24:15. > :24:21.to make that run pretty tough. He is such an amazing athlete, and he has
:24:22. > :24:27.got 16 seconds. Goodness me, 16 seconds, he has doubled his
:24:28. > :24:34.advantage in the space of a lap. Our leader is Alistair Brownlee. 27
:24:35. > :24:38.years of age now, looking behind him, slightly quizzical look on his
:24:39. > :24:43.face, wondering, where is everybody?! I think it is at this
:24:44. > :24:47.moment that he either completely commits to this breakaway, which it
:24:48. > :24:54.looks like he already has done, or he goes, shall I save my legs?
:24:55. > :25:03.Marten van Riel is having a little go at Alistair Brownlee himself,
:25:04. > :25:07.looking for some company. Alistair and Jonny's training partner is
:25:08. > :25:12.alongside him, it is in his interest to chase down his training partner.
:25:13. > :25:17.They have joined forces in an effort to quell the danger that is being
:25:18. > :25:23.inflicted by Alistair Brownlee. Back with the leader now. You once Varga
:25:24. > :25:27.up there with him, that is what he wants, but the danger of waiting is
:25:28. > :25:33.that the group will catch back up again. -- he wants. Stunning
:25:34. > :25:38.backdrop here, the calm waters of the harbour on the Gold Coast giving
:25:39. > :25:44.way to the skyscrapers, the apartment buildings, the luxury
:25:45. > :25:46.hotels, and Varga and Van Riel, I think, have caught Alistair
:25:47. > :25:51.Brownlee, or he has allowed them to catch him. And somebody else is
:25:52. > :25:55.seeing an opportunity, and it looks like maybe Jonny Brownlee is seeing
:25:56. > :26:04.an opportunity as well to bridge that gap. Eventually, Alistair
:26:05. > :26:10.Brownlee just yields and allows Ben Shaw to edge past him at the front
:26:11. > :26:17.of the race. And the Brownlees are now together as a pair in about
:26:18. > :26:25.fourth and fifth position. And it is Ben Shaw, the Irish triathlete, who
:26:26. > :26:32.is taking his chance by forcing himself to the front of the field.
:26:33. > :26:41.So far, no-one is taking him on, number 67, Ben Shaw, is alone
:26:42. > :26:48.representing Ireland at the head of the field here, and his gap has
:26:49. > :26:58.grown to about five seconds now. Now, this looks like a potential
:26:59. > :27:03.move from one of the British pilot racers. Is that Bishop or Benson,
:27:04. > :27:13.who might have... Maybe Bishop is trying to join Ben Shaw. It is Tom
:27:14. > :27:19.Bishop who has made the move towards the front of the field, to try and
:27:20. > :27:25.join Ben Shaw. So Bishop is trying to prove his worth as a valuable
:27:26. > :27:30.contributor to the Brownlees' Olympic ambitions. Will they now
:27:31. > :27:34.follow suit and try and join Tom Bishop and Ben Shaw at the front of
:27:35. > :27:39.the field? Perhaps we will see a pincer movement from Alistair and
:27:40. > :27:46.Jonathan together in an effort to plug the gap and gets towards the
:27:47. > :27:51.top of the leaderboard. Yeah, I am wondering if they have had orders
:27:52. > :27:54.from the Brownlees, for him to go up and chase him down. But he actually
:27:55. > :27:58.looked like he was going to go to the front and keep the pace up, but
:27:59. > :28:02.I imagine there are stacked it's going on, because Tom Bishop really
:28:03. > :28:10.knows what is job is in this race. -- there are tactics going on. The
:28:11. > :28:17.gap from Ben Shaw and Bishop to the next group, which numbers about 28,
:28:18. > :28:25.29 riders, it is getting on towards, I think it might be the 15 second
:28:26. > :28:36.mark, somewhere in that region. It is going to be even greater, heading
:28:37. > :28:45.towards 20 seconds. 22, 23, 24, 25 seconds is the lead that Shaw and
:28:46. > :28:52.Bishop have over the chasing group. As they head onto lap seven of
:28:53. > :28:57.eight. Yeah, no disrespect to Shaw at all, but he will be a couple of
:28:58. > :29:01.minutes down through the 10K from the likes of the Brownlees brothers
:29:02. > :29:05.and mola, so that is why they are happy to let it go down the road. I
:29:06. > :29:10.am interested to see what Tom Bishop is trying to achieve here, by
:29:11. > :29:16.breaking away, increasing the distance over the chase pack. Tom
:29:17. > :29:22.Bishop has certainly shown his credentials to act as a pilot racer
:29:23. > :29:28.for the Brownlees in the Olympic Games. He was able to find the speed
:29:29. > :29:32.and pace to move from chase group to join the breakaway leader,
:29:33. > :29:39.demonstrating to the selectors that he has got the wherewithal to
:29:40. > :29:43.attack, and potentially take a Brownlee brother with him along the
:29:44. > :29:48.way. They did not go within this time. No, I guess he feels like he
:29:49. > :29:53.has got nothing to lose, and he wants to demonstrate that he can
:29:54. > :29:59.ride and ride well. He will not be a threat to the main runners, he ran
:30:00. > :30:03.33, just three minutes slower than Mario Mola in Abu Dhabi, so as I
:30:04. > :30:09.mentioned, Tom Bishop will have been working on his swim and his bike, so
:30:10. > :30:14.he can work as a pilot athlete. Gordon Benson, though, happy to stay
:30:15. > :30:18.with the Brownlees. He is also a great runner in his own right,
:30:19. > :30:22.capable of running around a lot of track, cross-country, swimming
:30:23. > :30:25.before he crossed over into triathlon, but he is staying with
:30:26. > :30:29.the Brownlees. They are very familiar together, they all train
:30:30. > :30:30.together up in Leeds, whereas Bishop does not train with the Brownlee
:30:31. > :30:49.brothers. Bishop has moved to the front of the
:30:50. > :30:52.field to ride with Benjamin Shaw but by the same token Gordon Benson is
:30:53. > :30:59.riding at the front of the field to help the bench Brownlee brothers
:31:00. > :31:04.through. So this will be a headache for the selected. It will almost
:31:05. > :31:09.certainly be Gordon Benson or Bishop joining the Brownlee brothers in
:31:10. > :31:16.August in Rio as a pilot athlete, in a similar role to the one that
:31:17. > :31:25.Stuart Hayes played in London in 2012, when he came in again as an
:31:26. > :31:29.assistant, a pilot rider, a domestique, for the Brownlee
:31:30. > :31:35.brothers. It will be Benson or Bishop and they have both shown
:31:36. > :31:39.skills in different ways today. They have a kilometre to ride before they
:31:40. > :31:46.hit the blue carpet and hang up those bikes. Benjamin Shaw and
:31:47. > :31:52.Bishop are about to get there. The lead group, the lead pair,
:31:53. > :31:56.exchanging a few words, smiling, they can't quite believe where they
:31:57. > :32:01.have found themselves. I am not sure if this is what Tom Bishop was
:32:02. > :32:08.expecting. They will be followed by the other three British riders.
:32:09. > :32:13.Gordon Benson, Alistair Brownlee, Jonathan Brownlee, but it is feet
:32:14. > :32:21.out of the pedals for Bishop and Benjamin Shaw, as they hit the
:32:22. > :32:28.dismount line. And they jog towards their stands in transition. An early
:32:29. > :32:35.arrival for Benjamin Shaw. Bishop has got to make his way further up
:32:36. > :32:42.the carpet to his stand. And Shaw has already left transition, as
:32:43. > :32:47.Bishop attempts to join him. Left a couple of seconds behind there.
:32:48. > :32:56.Bishop is on his way. Meanwhile the chasing group, who are now 30
:32:57. > :32:58.seconds behind or thereabouts, arrived in transition. The Brownlee
:32:59. > :33:11.brothers headed to their stands. Mario Mola has arrived in his
:33:12. > :33:17.position. What a transition from him. Goodness me, that was fast!
:33:18. > :33:22.Lightning quick. Mario Mola has clearly been practising that element
:33:23. > :33:26.of his triathlon. His shoes went on in a flash. Now the hunt begins.
:33:27. > :33:41.Mario Mola leads Jonathan Brownlee. Brownlee gets stuck in in the early
:33:42. > :33:48.part of this ten kilometre run. First job, to find Bishop and Shaw,
:33:49. > :33:53.the British and Irish triathletes who arrived unexpectedly in
:33:54. > :33:58.transition first. They are well on their way on lap one, as Jonathan
:33:59. > :34:07.Brownlee and Mario Mola try to hunt them down. And it is Benjamin Shaw
:34:08. > :34:13.who has stolen a march, coming out of transition, over Tom Bishop. How
:34:14. > :34:16.long can he stay there? I think the speed that Mario Mola and Jonathan
:34:17. > :34:21.Brownlee have come out of transition, I don't think Shaw will
:34:22. > :34:26.be away for long. A battle at the moment between Mario Mola and Jonny
:34:27. > :34:31.Brownlee. It looks as though Fernando Alarza is about to join in
:34:32. > :34:37.the fun. Fun of confidence. He has known how fast he has run in the
:34:38. > :34:41.last few races. A win in Chicago, a winner in Abu Dhabi, the first race
:34:42. > :34:45.in the triathlon series this year, and he looks incredibly composed and
:34:46. > :34:53.relaxed. We can see Tom Bishop on the left. That is his day over,
:34:54. > :34:57.isn't it? Tom Bishop has been caught and he will go backwards now. The
:34:58. > :35:07.next target is Benjamin Shaw, a little further up the road. He is in
:35:08. > :35:13.his iris colours. Alistair Brownlee clearly struggling with the early
:35:14. > :35:17.pace of this race. It is all over now for Ben Shaw after his heroic
:35:18. > :35:23.efforts alongside Tom Bishop on the bike. Might just be able to stick
:35:24. > :35:28.with Mario Mola and Brownlee for a few moments and get a tow from them
:35:29. > :35:33.but not sure how long it will last. Interesting move from Brownlee.
:35:34. > :35:36.Going back to Fernando Alarza and Bailie, and Fernando Alarza going
:35:37. > :35:39.for that spot for Rio for the Spanish team and Bailie doing the
:35:40. > :35:48.same. They need to finish in the top ten to travel alongside Aaron Royle
:35:49. > :35:52.to Rio. The pace is frantic again between Brownlee and Mario Mola at
:35:53. > :35:57.the front. We have enjoyed some terrific battles between these two
:35:58. > :36:03.in the last few races, not least here on the Gold Coast in April
:36:04. > :36:06.2015, when Jonny Brownlee won the race, beating Mario Mola into second
:36:07. > :36:12.with Gomez third and Hernandez forth on that occasion. Alistair Brownlee
:36:13. > :36:18.looking slightly uncomfortable in the afternoon heat. After all his
:36:19. > :36:23.efforts so far in today's race, Alistair finds himself in sixth
:36:24. > :36:27.position at this stage. Mario Mola the athlete from Spain of course,
:36:28. > :36:30.and you could say he is more accustomed to running in the heat,
:36:31. > :36:35.but Jonny Brownlee has proved on many occasions that he is perfectly
:36:36. > :36:41.capable of taking on the hot and humid climate of Australia. He won
:36:42. > :36:46.here last year very convincingly. A touch of deja vu. It was Jonny
:36:47. > :36:52.Brownlee and Mario Mola last year, but Mario Mola second and Brownlee
:36:53. > :36:57.first. It looks like it will be the same two on the podium but in which
:36:58. > :37:02.order is the big question. Not giving up top spot just yet.
:37:03. > :37:05.Fernando Alarza has never won a World Triathlon Series race and
:37:06. > :37:15.neither has Bailie. The field spreads further down the Road. We
:37:16. > :37:19.know what he is capable of on the sprint when it was Gomez and Mario
:37:20. > :37:24.Mola going head to head in the top spot in the grand final in Chicago
:37:25. > :37:28.and Mario Mola got the better of him, playing cat and mouse for over
:37:29. > :37:32.a kilometre. We know that Mario Mola has a good sprint because Gomez
:37:33. > :37:38.certainly has. Brownlee still looking relaxed and strong but Mario
:37:39. > :37:42.Mola has that swinging action. Very lean athlete, Mario Mola, and
:37:43. > :37:45.looking comfortable on his feet. Fernando Alarza well clear in bronze
:37:46. > :37:51.position and he will be happy with that, barring disaster. He should
:37:52. > :38:03.make the podium today and give the selectors something to think about.
:38:04. > :38:08.But in joint third position for a while, bidding to be the best
:38:09. > :38:15.Australian on the day. Brownlee probably sensibly just taking his
:38:16. > :38:19.time here. He doesn't look particularly comfortable. I wonder
:38:20. > :38:25.if that break he put in on the bike has ultimately come back to haunt
:38:26. > :38:29.him here this afternoon. His running action looks pretty smooth so I
:38:30. > :38:34.don't think there are any injury problems. It has been a case of lack
:38:35. > :38:38.of race fitness really. Mario Mola and Brownlee had out, finishing the
:38:39. > :38:42.third lap and heading on to the last lap, and that is where we will seek
:38:43. > :38:48.the action. One of them will have to do something pretty decisive to take
:38:49. > :38:55.this victory. At the Bell Mario Mola of Spain and Jonny Brownlee of Great
:38:56. > :39:01.Britain, heading off onto their final 2.5 kilometres circuit of the
:39:02. > :39:05.streets of the Gold Coast. There is a break. The first significant
:39:06. > :39:10.injection of pace and it has come from Mario Mola. And at the moment
:39:11. > :39:16.Jonny Brownlee is unable to cover him. He can't respond. Mario Mola
:39:17. > :39:25.moves clear. One second clear. 1.5 seconds clear. Mario Mola declined
:39:26. > :39:30.the offer of water. Jonny Brownlee takes a shower. Will that invigorate
:39:31. > :39:35.him sufficiently to respond to the danger that Mario Mola has posed?
:39:36. > :39:43.Mario Mola may well have done enough. The gap to Jonathan Brownlee
:39:44. > :39:51.is up to three, four seconds. Jonathan will just have to hope that
:39:52. > :39:56.Mola has gone too early and is not able to keep up the pace for the
:39:57. > :40:02.remainder of this final lap. It looks as if last year's winner will
:40:03. > :40:09.have to settle for second place in 2016 in the Gold Coast triathlon.
:40:10. > :40:18.Fernando Alarza now comfortably in third spot. Bailie from Australia,
:40:19. > :40:25.he is in fourth position. Fernando Alarza surely confident now that he
:40:26. > :40:30.will get a spot within the Spanish Olympic team for a trip to the
:40:31. > :40:36.Olympic Games in Rio. Pretty scary for the rest of the world when you
:40:37. > :40:39.think that the main guy is not here. Mola is now really challenging Gomez
:40:40. > :40:46.for the top spot, but certainly history says that on paper Gomez is
:40:47. > :40:49.the top athlete and Mola next, and then Fernando Alarza in third in
:40:50. > :40:55.this race. The Spaniard is really strong at the moment. The island of
:40:56. > :41:02.Majorca producing some very talented sports men as well, not only Mario
:41:03. > :41:13.Mola but Rafael Nadal of course from the lyric islands. -- Bolero
:41:14. > :41:22.Brownlee looking over his shoulder now, hoping to maintain his position
:41:23. > :41:26.in second. He is starting to wobble. Jonathan is starting to lose his
:41:27. > :41:32.sense of direction. You worry is likely for Jonathan. We have seen
:41:33. > :41:36.this happen to Alistair before, in Hyde Park. We hope it doesn't happen
:41:37. > :41:40.to Jonathan but he doesn't look comfortable and we will keep our
:41:41. > :41:44.eyes on that. Mario Mola goes left towards the finishing line to claim
:41:45. > :41:50.his second win of the season, his third in the Rome having won the
:41:51. > :41:56.Grand Slam in Chicago in September 2015. -- third in a row.
:41:57. > :41:59.Consolidating his position as leader in the world triathlon standings as
:42:00. > :42:03.a lopsided Jonathan Brownlee staggers home and I hope the medics
:42:04. > :42:08.will be there. I heard that Jonny can finish but I think he may well
:42:09. > :42:17.lose out on second place. Fernando Alarza might come past him. Where is
:42:18. > :42:24.Jonny? Fernando Alarza has overtaken Jonathan Brownlee and will take
:42:25. > :42:29.second place. It is a 1-2-macro for Spain but at the moment my concerns
:42:30. > :42:34.are more for the health of Jonathan Brownlee, who is slaloming up the
:42:35. > :42:38.finishing line. He is managing to just about hold it together and
:42:39. > :42:43.finish and take his place on the podium. The medics will be all over
:42:44. > :42:50.him in a flash, I am sure. What a worrying sign. The efforts that
:42:51. > :42:55.these boys put in. Jonathan Brownlee is a mess. He finishes in third, the
:42:56. > :43:03.best of the Australians is Ryan Bailie. He is cementing his Olympic
:43:04. > :43:07.selection. Jonathan Brownlee is wheeled away for medical attention.
:43:08. > :43:15.We will keep our fingers crossed for his health. Mario Mola wins in the
:43:16. > :43:18.Gold Coast. 27 seconds clear of Fernando Alarza, with Jonathan
:43:19. > :43:24.Brownlee collapsing across the line into third. Bailie in fourth,
:43:25. > :43:30.qualifying for the Olympics for Australia. Alistair Brownlee
:43:31. > :43:35.finished in 36th position, with Tom Bishop in 42nd. Gordon Benson did
:43:36. > :43:44.not finish the race on the Gold Coast. Mario Mola extensive lead at
:43:45. > :43:50.the top of the series standings for 2016. A Spanish 1-2 with Fernando
:43:51. > :43:59.Alarza in second ahead of Bailie and Ryan Fisher of Australia. Mario
:44:00. > :44:02.Mola, a phenomenal race against some of the best and you have had an
:44:03. > :44:07.amazing start to the season. Thank you. I couldn't expect anything
:44:08. > :44:11.else. I felt great during most of the race. The run was pretty tough
:44:12. > :44:16.and Jonny was running very fast and the temperature was hot, so it got
:44:17. > :44:23.harder and harder, but I was lucky that I could finish and get the win
:44:24. > :44:29.here. Very happy for Fernando as well. He did a great race. I have
:44:30. > :44:32.had a good winter and it was fantastic to be on the start line. I
:44:33. > :44:36.knew I was not going to be mega race sharp and at my best but I am fit
:44:37. > :44:39.and I have had a good block of training and I thought I would be
:44:40. > :44:43.reasonably competitive but I had nothing today. I was really flat,
:44:44. > :44:49.slightly overdone or something. That is how it goes, I suppose. Do you
:44:50. > :44:57.attribute any of that to the conditions, the heat? Your brother
:44:58. > :45:00.was barely able to cross the line. Izzy OK? I think he is fine. It was
:45:01. > :45:02.hot but Jonny still raced well. I have been training for the last
:45:03. > :45:05.couple of weeks because I knew it would be hot, but I don't think it
:45:06. > :45:10.was the heat. I just had nothing there.
:45:11. > :45:18.We know you both give more than 110%, talk about the build-up to
:45:19. > :45:21.Rio. I hoped I would race well today, have a good result, but a
:45:22. > :45:27.couple of weeks training in the heat, it is quite good, going to
:45:28. > :45:32.Rio, but I had nothing out there. I left everyone on the bike, I was so
:45:33. > :45:37.dead, I could not get enough water, I could have done with about five
:45:38. > :45:42.stations, not two. I just managed to get through it, I want to finish
:45:43. > :45:47.every race I start, I did my best to cross the line, it was good. Do you
:45:48. > :45:52.feel you have proved yourself enough in this pilot roll? I don't know. I
:45:53. > :45:58.still could have swam better, there is definitely more work to do. If
:45:59. > :46:01.that happens in Rio, and I am not right, that causes harder than this
:46:02. > :46:07.one. I have got a few more seconds to make up on the swim. Gordon was
:46:08. > :46:11.just behind me out of the water, we have put on a good show, but still
:46:12. > :46:19.not great. We need to be the best we can be to help out Jonny and Ali. If
:46:20. > :46:24.we can improve a bit more, it will make their life easier. We have seen
:46:25. > :46:28.a very dominant British force at the Olympic Games, could we see a
:46:29. > :46:40.Spanish force instead? I hope so! Let's see when Javi comes, he is the
:46:41. > :46:48.real boss, I am looking forward to seeing him race again, and in Rio.
:46:49. > :46:52.Third successive win, Chicago at the end of last season, Abu Dhabi at the
:46:53. > :46:56.start of this one, and he backs it up with victory in the heat of the
:46:57. > :47:03.Gold Coast in Australia, three in a row for Mario Mola. The boys have
:47:04. > :47:06.been out here for a couple of weeks, they do like the weather in
:47:07. > :47:11.Yorkshire, it is a lot warmer at here! I think today took a bit of a
:47:12. > :47:16.toll on Jonny, but it is also an accumulation of the last few weeks.
:47:17. > :47:21.And Alastair, it was about a return to racing for him, he spent so long
:47:22. > :47:28.out with injury, something to improve on, plenty of time before
:47:29. > :47:33.Rio? Yeah, look, he is still on his return to full training, building up
:47:34. > :47:37.intensity, so it is another step for him, he has got a race under his
:47:38. > :47:45.belt, but the one thing we know about them, they do not like coming
:47:46. > :47:49.in second, so this is fine for them. That concludes our coverage, next up
:47:50. > :47:53.it is Cape Town, a different course from last year, and over the
:47:54. > :47:57.shorter, sprint distance, but we can hope for a similar result, because
:47:58. > :48:03.it was Alistair Brownlee and Vicky Holland who took gold. Astonishing
:48:04. > :48:09.win! Have you ever seen anything like that?! Fantastic! Colander wins
:48:10. > :48:11.in Cape Town in some style! -- Holland. Both races will be live on
:48:12. > :48:33.the red button. They are both expected to defend
:48:34. > :48:37.their titles there, and also taking part will be Non Stanford, Jodie
:48:38. > :48:43.Stimpson and Jonny Brownlee. Don't miss it. Until then, goodbye.
