:00:51. > :01:04.Stage two of the 2016 World Triathlon series in the Gold Coast,

:01:05. > :01:10.in Australia. Heather Jenkins and Jodie Stimpson battling for the

:01:11. > :01:30.final Olympic race. Spectacular diving start, look at that. What

:01:31. > :01:46.they start. They begin lapping one of 40 kilometres on two wheels.

:01:47. > :01:53.Heather Jenkins. Stimpson's Olympic dreams fade even further. The smile

:01:54. > :02:00.is broad, Jenkins takes the victory. Hewitt will have to settle for

:02:01. > :02:08.third. What a courageous race. Hello, welcome to our coverage of

:02:09. > :02:14.round three of the triathlon World Series. We descend on Cape Town. The

:02:15. > :02:17.battle has been for the third spot on the winning's team. Heather

:02:18. > :02:32.Jenkins looks to have made it their own. Beating the seemingly

:02:33. > :02:41.unbeatable Jorgenson the USA. For many Cape Town is the first race of

:02:42. > :02:49.the Olympic season. 2013 champion known Stanford and Nicky Holland

:02:50. > :02:55.start their series in South Africa. We have interviews with both girls,

:02:56. > :03:10.and the action. In the men's side we will look back over an eventful

:03:11. > :03:14.series. We will see whether Mario Mola can add another victory. I am

:03:15. > :03:20.not in Cape Town, I'm in Wales to meet Heather Jenkins, and Mark. Ie

:03:21. > :03:25.Still buzzing after the Gold Coast? It is taking a while to sink in, you

:03:26. > :03:29.get flat after such an emotional high. Taking a few weeks to absorb

:03:30. > :03:36.it. Relaxing, straight back into training. Mark, you are a former

:03:37. > :03:40.traffic, coaching Helen, as well as being married. How much of a

:03:41. > :03:45.surprise was that performance? We know what she can do if you train is

:03:46. > :03:50.well. We don't know whether we will get there. We do not have too many

:03:51. > :03:54.expectations, training well, everything going perfect stop we

:03:55. > :04:02.knew she had a good day, she would have a great result of performance.

:04:03. > :04:06.What is the winter preparation like? Everything went to plan, considering

:04:07. > :04:15.the last four years since London, the most consistent six months we

:04:16. > :04:20.have had. We had two six weeks blocks that were perfect. She got

:04:21. > :04:25.really sick before Abu Dhabi. After that, the best three and a half

:04:26. > :04:30.weeks she has done prior to San Diego 2012. In my mind, did not have

:04:31. > :04:35.a great year last year, did not get the results will stop training quite

:04:36. > :04:40.well. I had resigned myself to the fact I was not going to the

:04:41. > :04:44.Olympics. With Jodie doing so well in Abu Dhabi, it kept me really

:04:45. > :04:48.relaxed, leading into the Gold Coast. I knew training had gone

:04:49. > :04:54.well, I was excited to race, felt relief it. Not much thought about

:04:55. > :04:59.it. What was the plan for the Gold Coast? You ended up getting away in

:05:00. > :05:03.a break on the bike, building up the Big Apple is that that was not the

:05:04. > :05:09.plan going in. Writing really well, doing specific bike sessions. The

:05:10. > :05:15.sports scientist I had been working with plans how far from each stint.

:05:16. > :05:20.We were simulator in depth with the sprinting, steady work and

:05:21. > :05:29.sprinting. I felt quite excited. One of the questions everyone has been

:05:30. > :05:42.asking, who can be when -- who can beat Gwen Jorgenson? I did not think

:05:43. > :05:47.it was me. I mean me and Jodie but the last people to beat her. I was

:05:48. > :05:57.thinking she would properly catch me at five K. I heard that she had

:05:58. > :06:01.pulled ten seconds back on me. I heard someone shout 90 seconds,

:06:02. > :06:06.thinking that was strange, and I kept going. On the last laugh I

:06:07. > :06:13.still had one minute, trying to work it out in my head. How much faster

:06:14. > :06:18.does she have to run, in case I start blowing. I felt she would run

:06:19. > :06:23.faster my shoulder. As she has before. You have said, and you are

:06:24. > :06:28.not the most objective, that Helen is the best all-round triathlete in

:06:29. > :06:38.the world? Did that prove it for you? You have to put that quote in

:06:39. > :06:40.context. If she trains well, has a great run, all-round she is one of

:06:41. > :06:46.the best winners, bikers, and runners. All-round, the best

:06:47. > :06:49.triathlete. Not too many people would argue with that point. She

:06:50. > :06:54.doesn't always get the preparation she needs stop thieving the

:06:55. > :07:01.condition you are in now, performance and the Gold Coast,

:07:02. > :07:08.gives you a chance, you are the world champion before 2012, did not

:07:09. > :07:11.work out and stop I went to the Olympics, did not meddle. The worst

:07:12. > :07:16.feeling is being the favourite going into the games. I have been through

:07:17. > :07:20.the worst, after what happened at the Olympics. I would love to go to

:07:21. > :07:25.Rio and medal. I have not thought about it. If it does not, life goes

:07:26. > :07:31.on. Not the end of the world. You almost think before then, it is so

:07:32. > :07:37.hard, the build-up, not just the pressure, the expectation, expecting

:07:38. > :07:44.myself to go in the form, it did not happen. You realise nothing changes.

:07:45. > :07:48.Everyone carries on. Life goes on. It does. That performance in the

:07:49. > :07:53.Gold Coast. Maybe you will get more excited, Heather keeping a lid on

:07:54. > :08:00.it. It does change of dynamic of women's triathlon. Until the Gold

:08:01. > :08:03.Coast everyone thought Gwen Jorgenson was unbeatable. Some of

:08:04. > :08:06.the best coaches in the world said nobody is going to drop her on the

:08:07. > :08:12.bike, she's too good. Within a couple of days three girls rolled

:08:13. > :08:18.away. Did not attack. The rest of the pack are not right with them.

:08:19. > :08:23.Everything is possible. Up until the Gold Coast we had one plan, get to

:08:24. > :08:29.the Gold Coast. After the Gold Coast we will work out where we are going.

:08:30. > :08:36.We have loose plans up to Rio. The plan is to get to the start, fit.

:08:37. > :08:41.Then anything is possible. She could come 20th, who knows? If she is

:08:42. > :08:47.their fit, with good training, we're in a good position. Exciting times.

:08:48. > :08:53.To stand on the start line fit, would be amazing, does not happen

:08:54. > :08:56.too often. No Helen in Cape Town. It is the first race of the Olympic

:08:57. > :09:10.season. For one of our other runners, happy memories.

:09:11. > :09:22.A first-ever world triathlon series win, winning in Cape Town in some

:09:23. > :09:30.style. Cape Town is a special place, last year was beyond all my

:09:31. > :09:34.expectations winning it. Set me up for a fantastic year. Nice to have

:09:35. > :09:38.that in my mind and memory, going back, to stop my season in the same

:09:39. > :09:43.place. So excited, I can remember watching it on the TV. We were

:09:44. > :09:47.screaming, nearly crying, she was crying. Quite emotional. I was

:09:48. > :09:52.incredibly impressed with how she did it. Not really massively

:09:53. > :09:59.surprised, I train with her every day, seeing what she was doing. You

:10:00. > :10:07.are starting your season in Cape Town. Why start there? Decided to

:10:08. > :10:11.start in Cape Town, because of the Olympics, the main focus of the

:10:12. > :10:17.season. That is not until the 20th of August. We wanted to delay the

:10:18. > :10:23.start, so we did not start raising too soon, trying to hold our fitness

:10:24. > :10:26.for too long. Cape Town seemed that the perfect option, a bit closer, no

:10:27. > :10:32.time difference and stop towards the end of April. We felt that gave us a

:10:33. > :10:37.good build-up, did break in training building towards Rio. One of the big

:10:38. > :10:44.differences this year in Cape Town, Stanford will be alongside you. Talk

:10:45. > :10:48.about the relationship you have as competitors. We have known each

:10:49. > :10:52.other for a very long time, similar history, with the way we come

:10:53. > :10:56.through individual into triathlon. Outside of training and racing we

:10:57. > :11:04.have things in common we like to talk about. We are genuine friends,

:11:05. > :11:07.nice foundation to have for us. Then there is the fact we are training

:11:08. > :11:10.partners, both aiming for the same things. We know what we are heading

:11:11. > :11:14.for, we want to bring home metals. We want to be stood on that podium

:11:15. > :11:19.at the end of the day. All in all, works really well. A lot of people

:11:20. > :11:25.ask about the relationship and the dynamic how we deal with it. First

:11:26. > :11:28.and foremost, Vicky is my friend. Never let the competitive side of

:11:29. > :11:37.our relationship coming to our friendship. -- come in. Always aware

:11:38. > :11:41.of that. Never going to do something to add firstly affect the other's

:11:42. > :11:46.race intentionally. When it comes down to it, we are there to fight it

:11:47. > :11:51.out for gold and silver, silver and bronze, whatever, we know we have to

:11:52. > :11:54.do what is right for ourselves. They will be no hard feelings after the

:11:55. > :11:59.end of that, because it is sport, what we do, and we want the same

:12:00. > :12:05.thing, a medal. That is just how it is. If there is ever going to be any

:12:06. > :12:11.cracks, that is where they might show. Cape Town is a sprint race,

:12:12. > :12:17.possibly not your strength is Mac I prefer Olympic distance. I prefer

:12:18. > :12:22.having a ten K run. I enjoy the sprint race, fast and furious.

:12:23. > :12:26.Either within the hour. Good sharpeners committed way to start

:12:27. > :12:29.the season. I can be just as competitive over the sprint, as I

:12:30. > :12:36.can in the Olympics. Looking forward to it. Maybe the sharpness is what

:12:37. > :12:40.I'm lacking. My first race, many athletes on their third or fourth.

:12:41. > :12:46.For me, this is just the first race of the season. We will go to being

:12:47. > :12:50.as good a shape as we can. Knowing we have to have something to build

:12:51. > :12:54.on for the next few months. If you are in your best shape right now,

:12:55. > :12:59.incredibly hard to be in a shape in August. I had just turned 30,

:13:00. > :13:03.reaching my peak and stop if it is a good day for me, I will win the

:13:04. > :13:08.race. If I'm not having a good day, I will have third. The place to be.

:13:09. > :13:17.I have worked so hard for many years to get there. Before they enter the

:13:18. > :13:22.fray, let's look at the World Series standings with two races having

:13:23. > :13:31.taken place. Good from the British point of view, Helen leading the

:13:32. > :13:40.way. Very disappointing race for Jodie in the Gold Coast. Duffy could

:13:41. > :13:49.take over top spot with another strong performance in South Africa.

:13:50. > :13:58.We have come out of the kitchen, into the pain cave, is this what you

:13:59. > :14:01.call it? I do a lot of training here, at home all winter, not the

:14:02. > :14:06.best winter tours spend a lot of time on the treadmill. Also because

:14:07. > :14:12.of my back issues, not the most exciting training, keeping my back

:14:13. > :14:21.healthy, not doing anything outside. You have your side-by-side, his and

:14:22. > :14:26.hers Olympic Park face -- Olympic participation certificates. It will

:14:27. > :14:33.be four Olympics now? When will we stop. Maybe you can go to Tokyo. OK,

:14:34. > :14:44.let's talk about the racing Cape Town. A big moment for Vicky and

:14:45. > :14:48.Non, they are at the privilege of an selection, that this is where it

:14:49. > :14:53.starts. They will be excited, long time since they have raised. Having

:14:54. > :14:57.the selection is the best way to prepare for the Olympics, they will

:14:58. > :15:01.be peaking for this race, just a first go out. The sprint distance

:15:02. > :15:06.helps that. The full Olympic is harder on the body. Great place for

:15:07. > :15:12.them to start. This is a sprint race as opposed to the first two, Olympic

:15:13. > :15:18.distance. How does that change the dynamic? It does help the Ian

:15:19. > :15:22.Durrant, the distance. Some of the juniors or younger athletes do

:15:23. > :15:26.better at the sprints. Great to have the combination, giving people a

:15:27. > :15:33.good way to start the season. Easing into it. Cape Town conditions?

:15:34. > :15:40.The swim will definitely be cold, that might be a factor, the rest of

:15:41. > :15:45.the course is pretty standard but it's a great location for the race.

:15:46. > :15:49.And a tough weekend for Jodie Stimpson, trying to get over the

:15:50. > :15:55.disappointment of not being selected for Rio. The Olympic selection

:15:56. > :16:01.period is emotional, she is in good form and she is fit so if she can

:16:02. > :16:06.put that to one side and deliver like her abilities say, she should

:16:07. > :16:14.have a good race. And Flora Duffy as well? She has had a great start, she

:16:15. > :16:20.was so relaxed. She got to Gold Coast a day or so before. Cape Town

:16:21. > :16:24.is almost a local race for her, she is based in South Africa so I think

:16:25. > :16:29.she will have a big impact. Time for race highlights.

:16:30. > :16:36.COMMENTATOR: It is a sparkling bay in Cape Town in South Africa and we

:16:37. > :16:41.are almost ready to go with round three of the 2016 World Triathlon

:16:42. > :16:50.Series. A single lap in the water for the swim. The cycle is one lap

:16:51. > :16:55.of 4.8 kilometres, four laps up 3.8 kilometres to bring up the total of

:16:56. > :17:02.20 kilometres. There is a bit of a client involved and they loop behind

:17:03. > :17:09.the famous Cape Town Stadium and the Greenpoint athletic Stadium.

:17:10. > :17:17.They go out and back along the beach road before heading to transition,

:17:18. > :17:24.the second transition, to pick up the final stage, two laps of 2.3

:17:25. > :17:30.kilometres and a final lap of 400 metres to conclude the five

:17:31. > :17:36.kilometre run. This is the full start list. Jodie Stimpson come

:17:37. > :17:45.after the disappointment of Gold Coast come back in action.

:17:46. > :17:54.We are ready to race in beautiful Cape Town, the elite women are lined

:17:55. > :18:05.up on the pontoon. Flora Duffy closest to us wearing number one,

:18:06. > :18:09.representing Bermuda. 42 of them dive into the chilly waters of the

:18:10. > :18:20.Victoria Alfred Waterfront and set out at a frantic pace. The first

:18:21. > :18:26.sprint triathlon of the 2016 World Triathlon Series is underway and I'm

:18:27. > :18:33.joined by Annie Emmerson. A good clean start. And beautiful

:18:34. > :18:38.conditions, perfect, a bit chilly, I can't help but think it will be a

:18:39. > :18:44.bit of a shock when they dived in having been on the Gold Coast two

:18:45. > :18:49.weeks ago where the water temperature was about 25 degrees.

:18:50. > :19:01.Sparkling conditions, sunny weather and barely any wind, 18 degrees out

:19:02. > :19:04.of the water and 15 degrees inside. It is scenic surroundings on the

:19:05. > :19:09.Victoria Alfred Waterfront. A large group on the top of your

:19:10. > :19:15.screen and eight single swimmer. I think that is Flora Duffy wearing

:19:16. > :19:23.number one, the triathlete from Bermuda who has had a really good

:19:24. > :19:28.start to the season. She went so wide early on, a long way from the

:19:29. > :19:37.pack and she made a really good line coming in to that first buoy and I

:19:38. > :19:43.think it is Carolina Routier in second position. It is a decisive

:19:44. > :19:48.move from Flora Duffy and she is towing Carolina Routier to the next

:19:49. > :19:53.turning buoy, they just had to get to that correct side of that and

:19:54. > :20:00.then they head back towards the shore. There are two transition

:20:01. > :20:05.areas, the cycle stage is one lap of 4.8 kilometres followed by four laps

:20:06. > :20:12.3.8 that starts at transition one which is on the North wharf in front

:20:13. > :20:19.of the Watershed. Transition number two is elsewhere here in Cape Town.

:20:20. > :20:26.They are making good speed through the water, calm and pretty solid

:20:27. > :20:30.conditions for swimming and what a superb tactical decision from Flora

:20:31. > :20:33.Duffy of Bermuda. She has already had a really good season and today

:20:34. > :20:42.she is leading the way in terms of tactics because the direction she

:20:43. > :20:46.looked for after the dive has left the others struggling behind and

:20:47. > :20:50.trailing by seven or eight seconds apart from Carolina Routier who is

:20:51. > :20:56.the best swimmer in the field today. Flora Duffy has made a good start to

:20:57. > :21:01.the season, fourth in Abu Dhabi and in Gold Coast. If she is selected

:21:02. > :21:04.and there is every reason she will be for the Olympics, she will be

:21:05. > :21:11.competing in her third Olympic Games. She did not finish in

:21:12. > :21:15.Beijing, she was 45th in London. She could be an outside chance of a

:21:16. > :21:22.medal in Rio in August. Duffy leads them through the last few metres of

:21:23. > :21:26.the swim, good crowds out this afternoon as you can see, moving

:21:27. > :21:32.across to get a view of the athletes as they make that right-handed turn

:21:33. > :21:36.and head back under the bridge as they approach the final metres

:21:37. > :21:40.before they will exit the water and make their way towards their bikes,

:21:41. > :21:46.unzipping their wet suits along the way, reducing the amount of time it

:21:47. > :21:55.takes for them to go from water to two wheels. Duffy and Routier at a

:21:56. > :21:58.significant lead here. It is a sizeable gap, and a speedy

:21:59. > :22:03.transition is obviously very important. Looking out for Jodie

:22:04. > :22:06.Stimpson who had a great disappointment in Gold Coast are

:22:07. > :22:13.finished in 11th place. Helen Jenkins took the top spot. The irony

:22:14. > :22:18.was that Jodie Stimpson could potentially be a contender for an

:22:19. > :22:22.Olympic gold medal if she was able to go. We have four British

:22:23. > :22:29.triathletes. It is a great position to be in. The end of the swim,

:22:30. > :22:34.coming up to nine minutes and Duffy has played a blinder tactically, a

:22:35. > :22:38.different course chosen and she was joined by Carolina Routier who

:22:39. > :22:42.slipped as she was getting out of the water on the wooden jetty, I

:22:43. > :22:49.hope she didn't hurt herself. Third out is number five, Mari Rabie from

:22:50. > :22:53.South Africa, a good start for her and that has got the crowd involved,

:22:54. > :23:00.seeing one of their own exiting the water near the front of the field.

:23:01. > :23:04.Frintova next, then Rachel Klamer and Anna Contreras, Kirsten Kasper

:23:05. > :23:08.and Vicky Holland is the first of the British trio coming out in 10th

:23:09. > :23:16.position. We will keep an eye out for Jodie Stimpson who is wearing

:23:17. > :23:21.bib number two and Non Stanford wearing number 34. Stanford out in

:23:22. > :23:25.20th position, about 30 seconds off the pace of Duffy who has arrived in

:23:26. > :23:31.transition, making sure that wet suit goes into the box. The others

:23:32. > :23:38.are not far behind, Routier joins her on the road. They will be

:23:39. > :23:45.pushing out and away they go. Duffy getting into the saddle. Meanwhile,

:23:46. > :23:51.plenty of triathletes arriving to pick up their bikes and there will

:23:52. > :23:55.be a sizeable group behind Duffy. We know she is very capable out on her

:23:56. > :24:01.own, she will not mind racing on her own, we have seen her make breaks

:24:02. > :24:06.before and dominate the cycling leg before and she has a significant

:24:07. > :24:11.advantage. This could be an exciting prospect, to see an athlete go it

:24:12. > :24:14.alone from the swim. Carolina Routier had that slip which held her

:24:15. > :24:21.up but I think she will be hard pushed to stay with Flora Duffy. I

:24:22. > :24:26.noticed Jodie Stimpson exiting about ten seconds behind Non Stanford so I

:24:27. > :24:31.think she also had a slightly disappointing swim but I expect to

:24:32. > :24:39.see her soon in the chasing pack. Routier is in second and she has the

:24:40. > :24:46.South African, Rabie alongside her. Mari Rabie, number five for the host

:24:47. > :24:52.nation, currently in third position. 29 years of age. Duffy needs to

:24:53. > :25:00.think here, coming up to this quite sharp right-hander. She handles that

:25:01. > :25:05.part of the course comfortably enough, thankfully it is dry under

:25:06. > :25:12.the wheels and off she goes into the quieter part of the course. Back

:25:13. > :25:17.with Mari Rabie who has had some solid results in the lower

:25:18. > :25:21.divisions. It used to be that the World Cup was the high point of

:25:22. > :25:25.Olympic distance triathlon but the World Series represents that now and

:25:26. > :25:31.the World Cup takes up the second division but she has had some good

:25:32. > :25:34.results in the World Cup, in new Plymouth at the beginning of April

:25:35. > :25:39.she just missed the podium, finishing in fourth place so she has

:25:40. > :25:43.a bit of form and she will be hoping that she and Routier can make some

:25:44. > :25:49.inroads into this lead that has been established by Flora Duffy. Then

:25:50. > :25:53.there is a gap to the second pair of Routier and Rabie and we are yet to

:25:54. > :25:58.get a time check on the gap to the chasing pack which is likely to be

:25:59. > :26:02.significant in numbers. 27 seconds after nearly three kilometres, that

:26:03. > :26:09.is the gap that Flora Duffy has opened up and that is huge. What is

:26:10. > :26:13.going to happen, I think, I would predict that the third pack will

:26:14. > :26:17.catch the second pack, I don't think Rabie and Routier are strong enough

:26:18. > :26:23.to stay away and when that pack is altogether it will be a big pack, as

:26:24. > :26:27.we can see. Non Stanford making her way to the front of his chasing

:26:28. > :26:39.pack. Holland on the back, Rachel Klamer as well. Your prediction came

:26:40. > :26:44.true right on Q! -- Right on cue. They are joined by Stimpson on the

:26:45. > :26:48.right, Kasper from the USA, Stanford in front. We have not clocked Vicky

:26:49. > :26:53.Holland yet, hopefully she is not too far away as they join together

:26:54. > :26:59.and set about trying to close the gap to Flora Duffy. This is a rare

:27:00. > :27:06.thing, to have a rider so far out in front, this writer, Flora Duffy. Her

:27:07. > :27:09.cycling credentials are very solid, particularly after excellent

:27:10. > :27:17.performances having led breakaways in races this season -- this rider.

:27:18. > :27:22.I noticed that she took a little look over her shoulder and I think

:27:23. > :27:27.she was wondering where the second pack was. It is a shame she is not

:27:28. > :27:31.given some information because if she realised how far behind they

:27:32. > :27:37.were, I think she would get her head down to try to stay awake. It will

:27:38. > :27:40.be hard but that chasing group might not work as effectively as an

:27:41. > :27:47.athlete does who rides as strongly as she does on her own. She is out

:27:48. > :27:52.on Green Point now, coming past the magnificent Cape Town Stadium. The

:27:53. > :27:57.first lap which is a different distance to the remaining laps, is

:27:58. > :28:05.completed in less than 18 minutes by Flora Duffy. This huge pack has

:28:06. > :28:11.formed as the chasing group. We will get a time check, it is already

:28:12. > :28:15.significant, coming up to 20 seconds and it will be mid-20s or

:28:16. > :28:29.thereabouts between the leader and the chasers. It is more than that,

:28:30. > :28:36.33 seconds to clamour, Kasper and Stanford, then Routier and Jerdonek,

:28:37. > :28:43.Stimpson is in there. Vicky Holland as well, officially in ninth. Sarah

:28:44. > :28:47.True is in that group, as is Anne Haug, the evergreen German who is

:28:48. > :28:54.back for more World Triathlon Series races. Now we can follow Duffy who

:28:55. > :28:59.is ploughing a lone furrow with just under 15 kilometres to ride of the

:29:00. > :29:05.20. The lap distance switches now, the first lap is 4.8 kilometres and

:29:06. > :29:11.the remaining four are each 3.8 kilometres. This is going to be an

:29:12. > :29:14.interesting lap for Flora Duffy because I think the point when she

:29:15. > :29:18.came into the stadium, she might have had a clearer idea of where the

:29:19. > :29:23.chasing pack was and I think that might spur her on to realise that it

:29:24. > :29:27.is now or never and she can go it alone. It is only 20 kilometres, a

:29:28. > :29:32.lot shorter than what she is used to. The other thing she has come

:29:33. > :29:37.into this race is great fitness already. She raced in Abu Dhabi and

:29:38. > :29:49.on the Gold Coast so she comes in with good race fitness whereas some

:29:50. > :29:52.of the others, the likes of Holland and Non Stanford, we have not seen

:29:53. > :29:54.them racing yet. We know that training is going well but perhaps

:29:55. > :30:04.they have a few winter cobwebs to blow away. It is Duffy who is the

:30:05. > :30:08.top ranked competitor here and therefore she has the number one

:30:09. > :30:14.emblazoned on her right shoulder and on the bike frame as well and what a

:30:15. > :30:17.start to this race for Flora Duffy. And absolutely sensational

:30:18. > :30:21.performance so far. At the end of the first long lap with four shorter

:30:22. > :30:28.laps to go, she was more than 30 seconds in front. There is a 180

:30:29. > :30:34.degrees turn here at the end of Beech Road and now she will get a

:30:35. > :30:38.really good idea of where her competitors are in terms of their

:30:39. > :30:41.position behind her because shortly they will cross swords as Duffy

:30:42. > :30:48.heads off in one direction and this huge group, which must number 20 or

:30:49. > :30:53.30 riders, heading back towards the turn. They will have to take it

:30:54. > :31:00.easy, especially those in the middle of the pack who will be desperate to

:31:01. > :31:02.avoid any contact. We have seen some serious crashes already in the World

:31:03. > :31:08.Triathlon Series this year, especially the one in Abu Dhabi at

:31:09. > :31:11.the beginning of March when the Olympic champion broke her hand and

:31:12. > :31:19.one or two others were forced to call it a day. 43 competitors racing

:31:20. > :31:25.in Cape Town, that is a much smaller field than what we're used to

:31:26. > :31:28.seeing, normally it is around 60. This year it is different with it

:31:29. > :31:33.being an Olympic year and I think the athletes are choosing their

:31:34. > :31:37.races wisely. As you mentioned, this is a huge pack and I would not be

:31:38. > :31:38.surprised if most of them are in there, we are only missing one or

:31:39. > :31:53.two. Mirren for Flora Duffy, this is

:31:54. > :31:58.where it is all happening. Still out on her own. We used to seeing the

:31:59. > :32:03.Italian, hanging around near the back of the group, plenty of

:32:04. > :32:11.company. The British trio, at least two of them around near the front of

:32:12. > :32:18.the chasing group. The lead that Duffy had at the end of lap one, 33

:32:19. > :32:30.seconds, not improve, one second. That is all they have managed to

:32:31. > :32:44.take out of her lead. 33, down to 32. Vicky Holland, we can see going

:32:45. > :32:50.through 19th place. With the Olympic silver medallist, Lisa Norden, from

:32:51. > :32:54.Sweden. Non Stanford tucked in behind Rebecca Spence. Not seen

:32:55. > :33:01.Jodie Stimpson, difficult race for her. A couple of weeks ago. I hope

:33:02. > :33:06.she can turn it around. Such a fantastic race in Abu Dhabi, going

:33:07. > :33:12.on to win the World Cup. Coming into the season really strong. That has

:33:13. > :33:17.not disappeared after one bad race. Probably the most important race of

:33:18. > :33:22.her career though. From the highs to the lows of the sport, for Jodie

:33:23. > :33:26.Stimpson, winning in Abu Dhabi, failing to get near the leaders in

:33:27. > :33:34.the Gold Coast, missing out on Olympic selection, the 27-year-old

:33:35. > :33:39.from the West Midlands, racing here. She could be forgiven if she is not

:33:40. > :33:44.racing with her heartily in this competition. Really hoping to see

:33:45. > :33:49.her come back in. She is right up there in the second pack. Putting

:33:50. > :33:52.herself in a good position, hoping she can do something to regain

:33:53. > :33:57.confidence, make yourself feel better. It is a long year, anything

:33:58. > :34:02.can happen. Still four months until the Olympic Games. She has do keep

:34:03. > :34:07.herself focused and strong and really fit. If nothing else, she can

:34:08. > :34:15.focus on the world title. A good result would help to make gold in

:34:16. > :34:20.the world triathlon series in 2016. Winning this race today is in the

:34:21. > :34:28.mind Flora Duffy. I wonder where she got that local knowledge? In the

:34:29. > :34:35.water. To take a different course in the Victoria and Albert Harbour.

:34:36. > :34:49.Solid tactical decision. Incredible. Very decent lead going into that

:34:50. > :34:58.first buoy. Still a leader 34 seconds. You can see it is wind free

:34:59. > :35:03.on the Gold Coast, still no wind, did serving day. Nothing to hamper

:35:04. > :35:09.the progress on the waterfront. What a spectacular site that is. There

:35:10. > :35:18.are surfers up right on cue, riding the waves into the rocky and sandy

:35:19. > :35:27.outcrop. Holland near the back of the chasing group. Foot down,

:35:28. > :35:34.somebody taking a very careful turn. Mighty beam Jodie Stimpson. Duffy,

:35:35. > :35:40.continuing to eat up the kilometres on the tarmac under her wheels.

:35:41. > :35:44.Flora Duffy, leading the way for Bermuda, after a stunning tactical

:35:45. > :35:50.manoeuvre at the start of the swim, which saw her take a different

:35:51. > :35:56.course to everybody else in the water. Meanwhile in the chasing

:35:57. > :36:01.group, some urgency creeping in. Taking one second out of Duffy's

:36:02. > :36:08.lead on lap two. Let's see if they can take any more out of the race's

:36:09. > :36:14.lead. They will conclude lap two shortly, heading into the Greenpoint

:36:15. > :36:18.athletics stadium. Where the transition is located, we will get a

:36:19. > :36:25.check on her progress in comparison to the chasing group at the end of

:36:26. > :36:33.the third lap. Flora Duffy getting a warm welcome in the stadium, after

:36:34. > :36:39.30 minutes and 22 seconds. She has two laps to go. The chasing group

:36:40. > :36:45.only just making this penultimate turn before the stadium beckons.

:36:46. > :36:49.They get up the ramp. They may have taken a couple of seconds out of the

:36:50. > :36:58.lead, not sure how significant the damage done will be by the chasing

:36:59. > :37:05.group. 29 seconds. Just another two seconds. Nothing to get excited

:37:06. > :37:10.about. Not doing any serious damage. Duffy keeping them at bay.

:37:11. > :37:16.Unfortunately for the chasing pack, the same athletes, Non Stanford and

:37:17. > :37:21.Rebecca Spence doing the work. We talk about the big packs, how hard

:37:22. > :37:24.it is to get momentum and organisation, you cannot

:37:25. > :37:29.communicate. Some athletes are not prepared or cannot physically do

:37:30. > :37:39.their terms. All of that Non Stanford and Rebecca Spence at the

:37:40. > :37:43.moment. -- all about. Some encouragement and instructions being

:37:44. > :37:50.issued to the fellow competitors there. We have a look at Non

:37:51. > :38:02.Stanford, upfront in the chasing group. She missed a lot of last

:38:03. > :38:06.season with injuries. She managed to take part in the Rio test event,

:38:07. > :38:12.finishing second, securing Olympic: location. She took part in Edmonton,

:38:13. > :38:18.runner-up in the grand final in Chicago. Still leading the way, out

:38:19. > :38:24.on her Rome, on the quiet street in Cape Town. Going into the final

:38:25. > :38:31.stages of the third lap, before she heads out on the final 3.84

:38:32. > :38:36.kilometre lap. Spectacular shots from the helicopter up above top we

:38:37. > :38:42.have the leader and the chases in the same shot. 29 seconds at the end

:38:43. > :38:48.of lap three. Might average used it by a couple of seconds. Down to 21.

:38:49. > :38:55.At last the chasing group gaining to do some damage to Duffy's

:38:56. > :38:59.significantly. That is a mid-lap time. They can be unreliable. We

:39:00. > :39:05.will wait until she crosses the line at the end of lap to get a confirmed

:39:06. > :39:10.lead, with one lap to go. She will take the bail shortly. That is a

:39:11. > :39:14.tough one, I like what she has done in this race. Great to watch an

:39:15. > :39:17.athlete putting everything on the line. A shame she did not have a

:39:18. > :39:21.couple of other athletes to go with her. Makes it very difficult when

:39:22. > :39:28.you are out there taking all the wind yourself. No letup, no one to

:39:29. > :39:34.hide behind to have a break. Fair play, she has gone out there, given

:39:35. > :39:38.everything. 21 seconds, losing about seven or eight seconds on the first

:39:39. > :39:42.half of that lap. No doubt reduced by the time they head back to the

:39:43. > :39:47.stadium on the last lap. Duffy heading towards the stadium, where

:39:48. > :39:53.she will take the bell. At the end of lap one, the lead was a massive

:39:54. > :39:58.33 seconds. Little changed by the end of lap two, down to 32. Slight

:39:59. > :40:05.improvement as far as the chases were concerned at the end of lap

:40:06. > :40:11.three. 29 seconds. Behind the leader, Flora Duffy. She is pushing

:40:12. > :40:19.hard as she hits the blue carpet. Now we will find out the mid-lap

:40:20. > :40:25.time suggesting its reduced to 21 seconds. We will wait for the

:40:26. > :40:35.official time. They come through, 18 seconds. At last some significant

:40:36. > :40:39.room being made up by the chasing group. Almost halving the gap

:40:40. > :40:45.between lap one and the end of lap four. Flora Duffy looking around. I

:40:46. > :40:51.wonder if she thinks they may take another ten seconds out of her on

:40:52. > :40:56.this final lap? If nothing else, she was to keep out of trouble. It is

:40:57. > :41:01.normally only dying stages of the bike leg where we see mistakes

:41:02. > :41:07.happen. That massive crash we saw in Abu Dhabi taking out the current

:41:08. > :41:13.lipid champion along with 12 other athletes. It is in her interest now

:41:14. > :41:21.she has the gap, keep working, stay away. Around three kilometres left

:41:22. > :41:29.to travel. Setting up to be a really exciting run. It has been a while

:41:30. > :41:33.since we have seen Holland, Stimson and Stanford getting off the bike

:41:34. > :41:44.together. It will be interesting, great runners, but not really raced

:41:45. > :41:53.much together. Last year in Cape Town, it was a full distance race,

:41:54. > :41:56.it was:'s first victory in this series. No doubt she feels quite

:41:57. > :42:00.comfortable on this course with such good memories last year. Stanford

:42:01. > :42:07.told us earlier she prefers the Olympic distance, enjoys the sprint,

:42:08. > :42:11.but thinks she has a better chance with a 10,000 metres run, giving her

:42:12. > :42:16.the best opportunity to win a gold medal. Right on cue, there she is.

:42:17. > :42:24.In second position within the chasing group. Third overall. The

:42:25. > :42:29.leader is Rebecca Spence, of New Zealand, strong, powerful athlete.

:42:30. > :42:35.We can see the gap is shrinking all the time. Down to about eight or

:42:36. > :42:42.nine seconds. Can Flora Duffy maintain her advantage? It would be

:42:43. > :42:46.an achievement in itself to have led with time to spare coming out of the

:42:47. > :42:58.water. To maintain that lead after a 20 kilometre ride, significant

:42:59. > :43:03.achievement for the Bermudian. She comes through that 180 degrees turn.

:43:04. > :43:10.No one else to worry about. The chasing group Atom avoid each other

:43:11. > :43:16.on the turn. She might as well take a bit of a break now. Early days.

:43:17. > :43:22.Not even on the run. What about a triple GB podium? We have Stimson,

:43:23. > :43:26.Vicky Holland, and Non Stanford. All three of them great runners.

:43:27. > :43:32.Probably the three top runners in this field. The Americans achieve it

:43:33. > :43:46.in London, Hyde Park. Last summer. Over the sprint distance. Jorgensen

:43:47. > :43:52.winning. With our three athletes, a group of 35 plus arriving in

:43:53. > :43:59.transition at the same time, it is an absolute possibility. Duffy's

:44:00. > :44:09.lead is over. She has had a lonely time for the first two thirds of

:44:10. > :44:15.this race in the triathlon. Now she joined the group. As they progressed

:44:16. > :44:20.towards the end of the final lap. Thoughts will turn to transition

:44:21. > :44:28.now. Which takes place within the Greenpoint athletics arena. There is

:44:29. > :44:31.the blue track. For good measure, Duffy will make sure she wins the

:44:32. > :44:37.bike stage as well as winning the swim. She will lead them in, rightly

:44:38. > :44:43.so, putting in all that effort, the great tactical swim. Then a solid,

:44:44. > :44:47.aggressive cycle. The first to arrive in transition. On the right

:44:48. > :44:52.of the screen, Jodie Stimpson, keeping herself out of trouble.

:44:53. > :44:58.Duffy is first to arrive at her stand in transition. Hanging up her

:44:59. > :45:04.bike. Switching shoes. Stimson has had a really good transition. Duffy

:45:05. > :45:08.has been left behind slightly by one or two a little sharper through

:45:09. > :45:11.transition. Away they go with a group of around nine or ten leaving

:45:12. > :45:21.transition together. Now a five kilometre run and it is

:45:22. > :45:28.made up of two of two lapse of 2.3 kilometres and a final lap of 400

:45:29. > :45:35.metres on the track. Jodie Stimpson just running past Mari Rabie, her

:45:36. > :45:39.training partner. She has spoken vocally on social media about what a

:45:40. > :45:43.support she has been for her over these last two difficult weeks.

:45:44. > :45:48.Stimpson is certainly the better runner. It is Stanford taking up at

:45:49. > :45:53.the moment and somebody made a last-minute decision in the marshals

:45:54. > :46:07.to shift that: out of the way, a little confusing for the athletes --

:46:08. > :46:11.that : cone. Duffy is out there with Stanford and Holland and Stimpson at

:46:12. > :46:17.the head of the field. And another athlete in there is Anne Haug, who

:46:18. > :46:21.had the most amazing 2013 season and then had a dispute with her coach.

:46:22. > :46:26.She went to the World Championship final in London is one of the

:46:27. > :46:31.favourites, was beaten by Non Stanford and was nowhere to be seen.

:46:32. > :46:34.Non Stanford now leading the way, Flora Duffy sticking with the

:46:35. > :46:41.British girls, Holland and Stimpson up there and Haug, who we have not

:46:42. > :46:48.seen in such good form for a good couple of years now. She is one of

:46:49. > :46:52.the veterans, 33 years of age. She was 38th in Abu Dhabi after an

:46:53. > :46:57.inauspicious start to the season. Seventh in the Olympic test event

:46:58. > :47:02.last summer. The British clean sweep you suggested might be possible is

:47:03. > :47:08.still on the cards here because Stanford and Holland and Stimpson

:47:09. > :47:13.are in that front group of five. Flora Duffy is not known as a runner

:47:14. > :47:21.but she ran very well on the Gold Coast and stayed with Andrea Hewitt

:47:22. > :47:26.most of the way. Duffy managed to stick with Hewitt so we know her

:47:27. > :47:33.running is much improved but can she stick at this pace for another 4.5

:47:34. > :47:38.kilometres? They are into the Green Point Urban Park. We have a group of

:47:39. > :47:44.five at the front, comprising three British triathletes, Non Stanford,

:47:45. > :47:49.Dodi Stimpson and Vicky Holland. Flora Duffy of Bermuda, who has led

:47:50. > :47:53.this race pretty much from the start until now, and Anne Haug, the German

:47:54. > :48:06.veteran at 33 is also contending. Non Stanford really taking this run

:48:07. > :48:11.on. We know very little about her real form this year, we know what

:48:12. > :48:15.she is capable of doing but we have not seen her out running yet so we

:48:16. > :48:19.don't know what she has up her sleeve but she is looking

:48:20. > :48:23.phenomenally strong and is out pushing the pace with her team-mate

:48:24. > :48:29.Jodie Stimpson on her shoulder. Flora Duffy hanging in and Vicky

:48:30. > :48:38.Holland just tucked in behind. Ai Ueda of Japan, Sarah True of the USA

:48:39. > :48:43.on the left of the screen. In the past in Cape Town Sarah True has had

:48:44. > :48:50.solid results, she was fourth in 2014 in a race won by Jodie

:48:51. > :48:55.Stimpson, that was full distance. Jenkins was second, Jorgensen was

:48:56. > :48:59.third and Sarah True was fourth. Sarah True had a really

:49:00. > :49:04.disappointing season by her standards, she broke with her coach

:49:05. > :49:09.at the end of last year and is finding it really hard, that

:49:10. > :49:13.transition, as some athletes do. I mentioned Anne Haug earlier when she

:49:14. > :49:19.split with Darren Smith, she found it difficult to find that champion

:49:20. > :49:25.form and we have not seen any of it from Sarah True this year in such an

:49:26. > :49:30.important year. Duffy is struggling to stay with the pace that Stanford

:49:31. > :49:34.is setting at the front. She has not been dropped, it is not a decisive

:49:35. > :49:40.move that Stanford has put in but Duffy is having to work doubly hard

:49:41. > :49:45.to keep tabs on Vicky Holland who is next up the line. Then Anne Haug and

:49:46. > :49:53.Jodie Stimpson and at the front of the field at the moment, Non

:49:54. > :50:01.Stanford. Then a gap to Ai Ueda and Kirsten Kasper and Sarah True. Five

:50:02. > :50:05.have now become three and I think one of the British triathletes is

:50:06. > :50:10.struggling, Vicky Holland might have been left behind as Stimpson,

:50:11. > :50:17.Stanford and Haug make a bit of a break for it in front. They come

:50:18. > :50:21.back to complete the first lap, 50 and a half minutes of the triathlon

:50:22. > :50:27.complete and Jodie Stimpson is leading the way for Great Britain

:50:28. > :50:31.with Non Stanford second and Anne Haug third for Germany. Flora Duffy

:50:32. > :50:37.is fourth and Vicky Holland appears to be going backwards at this stage.

:50:38. > :50:42.It is nothing to worry about, it is early in the season and these girls

:50:43. > :50:47.only have one date in mind this year which is the 20th of August when

:50:48. > :50:54.they will be racing in Rio at the Olympics. While Vicky Holland is not

:50:55. > :50:59.on her best game today, slightly dropping off the pace and finding it

:51:00. > :51:07.a bit tough. Non Stanford and Annie Hauke are leading the way. -- Anne

:51:08. > :51:09.Haug. Vicky Holland won this race a year ago overfull distance, beating

:51:10. > :51:27.Katie Zagros. -- Katie Although Billy Holland seemed --

:51:28. > :51:32.although Vicky Holland seem to be losing ground, she has not let that

:51:33. > :51:37.become a decisive move and is still in contention. Non Stanford picks up

:51:38. > :51:42.the pace. I'm impressed with Flora Duffy, she looked like she was dead

:51:43. > :51:44.and buried but she has brought herself back into the race and is

:51:45. > :51:51.hanging onto the back of Jodie Stimpson. Non Stanford leading the

:51:52. > :51:54.way, you find some runners prefer to be at the front and certainly that

:51:55. > :52:01.is where Non Stanford has preferred to be, about two kilometres to go.

:52:02. > :52:07.Anne Haug is having the race of her life. The shorter swim really suits

:52:08. > :52:11.her, she is renowned for some poor swims so this short one gives her a

:52:12. > :52:16.chance to get back into contention on the World Triathlon Series. The

:52:17. > :52:27.chasing group is now 13 seconds behind. That has Kasper at the head

:52:28. > :52:34.of it. Ueda, Sarah True and Sato just behind and then a gap with Lisa

:52:35. > :52:41.Norden at the head of the third group. Non Stanford is cruising

:52:42. > :52:45.along and a determined look on the face of Jodie Stimpson, determined

:52:46. > :52:50.amongst other things to make up for the disappointment of failing to

:52:51. > :52:56.find her true form on the Gold Coast and getting that e-mail telling her

:52:57. > :53:01.she would not be selected for the summer Olympic Games in Rio. Her

:53:02. > :53:07.focus has now become the World Triathlon Series, winning it in

:53:08. > :53:13.2016. She is determined to make a point in the process. Just over two

:53:14. > :53:16.kilometres to run with Non Stanford leading for Great Britain, Anne Haug

:53:17. > :53:20.and Jodie Stimpson sharing second and then a gap to Flora Duffy and

:53:21. > :53:27.Vicky Holland, the winner of this race last year, back in fifth at

:53:28. > :53:38.this stage. At the end of the second lap there will be a 400-metre lap of

:53:39. > :53:43.the Green Point Athletics Centre to complete the competition, hopefully

:53:44. > :53:48.a spectacular end to the race for Non Stanford, who is starting to

:53:49. > :53:54.move clear of Haug and Stimpson. At the moment, they have no answer as

:53:55. > :53:59.Stanford, from Wales, kicks player of the German and the racer from the

:54:00. > :54:06.West Midlands. -- kicks clear. She has a gap of about a second now.

:54:07. > :54:10.Stimpson moved alongside Haug in an effort to respond. These two have to

:54:11. > :54:14.work hard, they cannot let her get further away because Stanford is an

:54:15. > :54:18.experienced runner and she knows what she's doing gradually pulling

:54:19. > :54:29.away. Jodie Stimpson has hang on to her now. The gap is a couple of

:54:30. > :54:34.seconds. A good performance, solid timing from Non Stanford, who told

:54:35. > :54:40.us in her prerace interview that she prefers the full Olympic distance

:54:41. > :54:46.but might quite enjoyed this sprint distance race today, especially if

:54:47. > :54:50.she comes home with victory. It is the first World Triathlon Series

:54:51. > :54:55.race that Non Stanford has entered in 2016, choosing to opt out both

:54:56. > :55:01.Abu Dhabi and the Gold Coast races. Could this be a decisive move from

:55:02. > :55:07.Non Stanford? She seems to have injected another modicum of pace

:55:08. > :55:11.into this second lap. She looks really strong. A winter in Leeds has

:55:12. > :55:16.done her no harm at all because she has come in with some great fitness

:55:17. > :55:19.even though we have not seen her racing yet. Jodie Stimpson with

:55:20. > :55:23.battle it out with Anne Haug and I would be careful if I was there

:55:24. > :55:29.because Haug has a great sprint on her. Duffy in fourth place hanging

:55:30. > :55:33.on to the back of them, she had had a great race and put it all on the

:55:34. > :55:38.line on the bike. Non Stanford, former world champion, is clear of

:55:39. > :55:41.the field. Originally from Swansea although she spends little time in

:55:42. > :55:46.her home city these days, travelling the world and based up in Leeds for

:55:47. > :55:51.training where she shares a house with Vicky Holland who is back in

:55:52. > :55:55.fifth position. The gap is growing all the time as Non Stanford grows

:55:56. > :56:09.in confidence towards the end of the race. It is up

:56:10. > :56:13.to four seconds between first and second and it could be a British

:56:14. > :56:16.1-2. We hoped for 81-2- three but that might be out of the question.

:56:17. > :56:20.But Stanford followed by Stimpson is a distinct possibility. It is going

:56:21. > :56:25.to be a lap of honour for Stanford if she can keep clear of Jodie

:56:26. > :56:33.Stimpson who, in turn,... She stumbles on that right-hand turn but

:56:34. > :56:38.she is clear Anne Haug. It is not going to be victory for Jodie

:56:39. > :56:43.Stimpson, barring any disasters. But what a comeback for her after such

:56:44. > :56:46.disappointment in the Gold Coast. Fantastic for her and she will gain

:56:47. > :56:55.a great deal of confidence from this race. Non Stanford takes the hairpin

:56:56. > :56:59.turn and she sees Jodie Stimpson and she can gauge the time difference

:57:00. > :57:05.that she possesses over her compatriot with Anne Haug third and

:57:06. > :57:10.then a gap to Duffy and a further break to one of the Americans who

:57:11. > :57:15.has overtaken Vicky Holland. Holland is back in sixth position now and

:57:16. > :57:20.Kirsten Kasper has gone past her but it is all about Non Stanford. She

:57:21. > :57:26.took this race by the scruff of the neck in the second part of the run,

:57:27. > :57:33.having ridden a solid state on the bike. She was always at the front of

:57:34. > :57:37.the pack, sharing the workload. Injecting pace when needed, part of

:57:38. > :57:43.that decisive move to close down Flora Duffy and as she entered the

:57:44. > :57:47.stadium, with 400 metres to run, Non Stanford is leading the way for

:57:48. > :57:53.Great Britain. Closely followed by Jodie Stimpson. Here we go, 400

:57:54. > :57:58.metres to go and it is Non Stanford of Great Britain who leads them into

:57:59. > :58:05.the Green Point Athletics Stadium to a roar from the assembled crowd.

:58:06. > :58:10.Stimpson is ahead of Haug in second position as Stanford moves clear of

:58:11. > :58:15.the field. What a performance from Non Stanford, her timing, her return

:58:16. > :58:20.to World Triathlon Series racing has been timed to perfection. She sat

:58:21. > :58:27.out the first two races and what a way to return, with a victorious

:58:28. > :58:32.performance in South Africa. Anne Haug has a lot of work to do because

:58:33. > :58:36.she has Flora Duffy from Bermuda breathing right down her neck so she

:58:37. > :58:41.will have to work incredibly hard to hang onto this place that she is

:58:42. > :58:48.heading towards right now. Non Stanford is on the home straight

:58:49. > :58:53.now, Jodie Stimpson will settle her emotions, I would suggest, after the

:58:54. > :58:59.disappointment of the loss and the loss of a chance of competing in the

:59:00. > :59:04.Rio Olympics. The battle continues for third place, Duffy has found a

:59:05. > :59:10.bit of extra energy and is closing in on Stimpson now. What a fantastic

:59:11. > :59:15.race she is having, fantastic to have been able to come back and

:59:16. > :59:19.overtake Anne Haug but here is Non Stanford. Stanford onto the blue

:59:20. > :59:27.carpet, starting to enjoy the celebrations of her first win of

:59:28. > :59:31.2016, her first race of 2016 Ulster it brings victory to Non Stanford of

:59:32. > :59:34.Great Britain. Jodie Stimpson make up for the disappointment of moving

:59:35. > :59:41.out on Olympic selection by finishing second in Cape Town with

:59:42. > :59:45.Flora Duffy, who led on the swim and on the bike, holding on with a

:59:46. > :59:51.gritty performance to take third place with Anne Haug and Kirsten

:59:52. > :59:56.Kasper involved in a sprint finish for fourth and fifth. Vicky Holland

:59:57. > :00:00.is the last of the British trio to finish, in sixth position. I was

:00:01. > :00:04.really apprehensive, the Beagle at home was saying, we're going to

:00:05. > :00:09.watch on TV and I would say, I'm sorry if you don't see me! I was

:00:10. > :00:12.shocked to be at the front, I was a bit worried about the one because I

:00:13. > :00:17.did a lot of work on the bike and I thought I might pay for its -- the

:00:18. > :00:21.run. I did not think about the outcome. I came here to see where I

:00:22. > :00:26.was and everything is on track. I'm not in ideal race shape so it means

:00:27. > :00:31.that there is still more to come which is exciting.

:00:32. > :00:37.To be honest, I did not expect anything from this race. The past

:00:38. > :00:41.couple weeks have really awful, anyone who supports the social media

:00:42. > :00:49.will realise it has been awful. No way I would be finishing fourth

:00:50. > :00:55.place again. Lots of my friends, my boyfriend's family are here

:00:56. > :01:02.watching. No way I am coming in for. What a way for Non Stanford to start

:01:03. > :01:13.her season. Resounding victory in Cape Town. By seven seconds if her

:01:14. > :01:17.compatriot, Jodie Stimpson. -- to her compatriot. Flora Duffy takes

:01:18. > :01:30.control of the World Series standings. Non Stanford up in eighth

:01:31. > :01:39.position following today's victory. The former world champion, Non

:01:40. > :01:43.Stanford makes the perfect return to Well Triathlon series racing.

:01:44. > :01:49.Perfect sprint over the distance in Cape Town. Round three going to Non

:01:50. > :01:52.Stanford. Round two to Helen Jenkins. Round one, to Jodie

:01:53. > :02:40.Stimpson. Victory today for Non Stanford,

:02:41. > :02:51.ahead of Jodie Stimpson, with Flora Duffy in third. The second world

:02:52. > :03:01.parrot triathlon took place in Penrith in Australia. More British

:03:02. > :03:07.success, gold medal for Andy Lewis. In the absence of Lauren Steadman in

:03:08. > :03:13.the women's's event, Claire Cunningham earned a silver medal.

:03:14. > :03:18.Joe Townsend only beaten by a five times world champion. The British

:03:19. > :03:22.parrot triathlon team turned their attention to events in Japan and

:03:23. > :03:38.Spain on the 14th of May. I tell you, he was being Cape Town,

:03:39. > :03:43.when the weather is like this in Wales. I know. How much time you

:03:44. > :03:55.spend on the each week? About five swims. Five to six riots, five to

:03:56. > :03:58.six runs. Two gym sessions. All the preparation staff to do with being

:03:59. > :04:02.an old athlete. I cannot just do running, I have to do ten minutes

:04:03. > :04:14.rolling around on the floor before I get out the door. How much are you

:04:15. > :04:19.dancing on eggshells regarding her fitness? Not worried about her

:04:20. > :04:25.fitness, it is good. Keeping had their common concern. She has a bad

:04:26. > :04:30.back. Always trying to manage that, keep it the good side of that.

:04:31. > :04:37.Hopeful we will keep her on track. Always conscious something can crop

:04:38. > :04:44.up. Are you very aware of the little things which may trigger a reaction?

:04:45. > :04:48.We are conscious. If she gets sick, vomiting, a calf, it can put stress

:04:49. > :04:57.on her back very quickly. 6-8 weeks after that, she may have a relapse.

:04:58. > :05:02.We have 17 weeks until Rio, gives us plenty of time to get her fit, and

:05:03. > :05:21.loser again. We have a lot of time, 17 weeks. What we're looking at,

:05:22. > :05:29.trying to maintain that until Rio. It has been a long time. We were in

:05:30. > :05:36.the same swimming club together. I was the older good-looking guy in a

:05:37. > :05:40.single. Helping me along. -- in the summing pool. A lot of people say

:05:41. > :05:43.how do you spend so much time with your partner? What we have always

:05:44. > :05:50.done, we're comfortable. We enjoy training together. I'm not as quick

:05:51. > :05:55.as a used to be. Helen able to push me hard on the bike, it seems the

:05:56. > :06:02.competition. I wheeze B team in the summing pool. How did the transition

:06:03. > :06:07.to coaching come up? I got sick after Atkins, not able to do that

:06:08. > :06:14.much competition. I was the athlete. When I was sick, it went on to her.

:06:15. > :06:19.We decided after she got injured at one point, nobody cares about us as

:06:20. > :06:25.much as we do. We will start looking after each other. Around the end of

:06:26. > :06:30.2007. I had been out for one year being injured. I really wanted to

:06:31. > :06:36.make the Beijing Olympics. He took over, putting a plan in place. I

:06:37. > :06:41.became world champion in May, qualifying for the games. After

:06:42. > :06:46.that, we said something works, we carried on. How do you turn off?

:06:47. > :06:51.Forgetting triathlon, when it is the two review, project Jenkins. We

:06:52. > :06:57.don't think about it too much, once we finished training, put the bike

:06:58. > :07:08.in the gym, get on with what we are doing. Watch the Be Bank Theory. We

:07:09. > :07:10.try to treat it as it is. Being athlete, you always have to be

:07:11. > :07:17.looking to perform. Improving every area. We try to leave it at the

:07:18. > :07:25.door. The Gold Coast was a triumph for Helen. What about the Brownie

:07:26. > :07:28.brothers, starting their season. Tom Bishop vying for the third spot in

:07:29. > :07:34.the British Olympic team. It turned out to be a tough day at the office

:07:35. > :07:46.for the boys. A return to the competition for the Brownie

:07:47. > :07:53.brothers. -- Brownlee brothers. Jonny Brownlee in third position.

:07:54. > :08:00.Alistair comes out in 15. Slipping onto his backside, Alistair

:08:01. > :08:02.Brownlee. Somebody has had a go at the front. Alistair Brownlee making

:08:03. > :08:22.a move. It is Tom Bishop. They parrot the front of the field.

:08:23. > :08:31.Bishop is on his way. Mario Mola leads Alistair Brownlee. He moves

:08:32. > :08:39.clear. A one, two for Spain. Mario Mola finishing ahead of Fernando

:08:40. > :08:48.Alarza. Lopsided Jonny Brownlee staggers home. Not the start of the

:08:49. > :08:56.Olympic year the Brownlee brothers would have wanted. How aware where

:08:57. > :08:59.you to what was going on? They had a really good start of the year,

:09:00. > :09:04.especially Jonny coming back from injury. Sometimes the start of the

:09:05. > :09:08.season does not go the way you want it to. It is hard for any northern

:09:09. > :09:13.hemisphere based athlete dropping into the southern hemisphere when

:09:14. > :09:17.there are athletes based there for a long period, doing a couple of

:09:18. > :09:21.races. Not easy to drop into that intensity of racing without doing

:09:22. > :09:27.it. Alistair injured himself, not competing in Cape Town. Seems like a

:09:28. > :09:33.sensible thing. It is the sensible decision. He has the look towards

:09:34. > :09:38.Rio. Prequalified, he has the time. Who would bet against him. With the

:09:39. > :09:48.results he has had. I'm sure this is a small setback. Jonny is racing,

:09:49. > :09:52.given how he was distressed after the Gold Coast, was that sensible?

:09:53. > :09:58.I'm sure he knows his body, whether he has recovered. I'm sure he has

:09:59. > :10:03.recovered well. Did not look great in the last couple of kilometres. It

:10:04. > :10:08.was really hot comedy look good in a great position. I'm sure he has

:10:09. > :10:12.recovered well. Cape Town is a sprint, not a stressful. We have

:10:13. > :10:17.talked about the battle for the third spot in the women's team.

:10:18. > :10:23.Sorted out now. In terms of the men, different situation. Gordon and Tom,

:10:24. > :10:28.one of them being a support athlete for the Brownlee brothers. It will

:10:29. > :10:34.be a question of who raises the best over the next few races. Not just

:10:35. > :10:39.finishing in front, but you can add the most to them in the Olympics.

:10:40. > :10:42.You have to swim and bike well. Both Gordon and Tom showed that in the

:10:43. > :10:49.Gold Coast. Interesting to see who they pick. Highlights from Cape Town

:10:50. > :10:58.coming up shortly. First, the ones to watch. With Alistair Brownlee and

:10:59. > :11:03.Vincent Lewis both late withdrawals. All eyes on Mario Mola and Jonny

:11:04. > :11:07.Brownlee. Name one in the field has ever won a sprint distance race when

:11:08. > :11:11.both of them have been competing. Mario comes into Cape Town

:11:12. > :11:17.undefeated since Edmonton last December. This would be his fourth

:11:18. > :11:21.consecutive victory. These are the coolest condition since that racing

:11:22. > :11:25.Canada. The cold water can play into the hands of Jonny Brownlee. Much

:11:26. > :11:29.depends on how he has recovered from the heat exhaustion blighting the

:11:30. > :11:33.end of his Gold Coast race. Reports suggest trading has gone well. We

:11:34. > :11:39.will see how that translates on the day. Fernando Alarza has previously

:11:40. > :11:44.shown in form over the sprint distance. Most notably finishing

:11:45. > :11:49.second behind Alistair Brownlee in London last year. He's yet to secure

:11:50. > :11:54.the third place for the Spanish team in Rio. Another podium finish, and

:11:55. > :12:01.selection will not be too far away. Keep on nine out on Silva, the Abu

:12:02. > :12:07.Dhabi gold medallist. He did not travel to the Gold Coast, no travel

:12:08. > :12:12.stresses. The same goes for Adam Barrett and, the short, flat course

:12:13. > :12:16.should play to his strengths. He will be relaxed without concerns of

:12:17. > :12:21.Rio qualification to worry about. Mario Mola leads the rankings with

:12:22. > :12:27.two races gone. His compatriot in second. Jonny Brownlee is the top

:12:28. > :12:32.Briton in ninth place, overall. Richard Murray crashed out on the

:12:33. > :12:38.bike in the Gold Coast, fracturing his collarbone. That is why he's not

:12:39. > :12:43.in Cape Town. He has had surgery, estimates he will be out of action

:12:44. > :12:49.for 6-8 weeks will stop the man at the moment, certainly Mario Mola. He

:12:50. > :12:53.has been stunning. Fantastic, looks like he has improved his swimming.

:12:54. > :12:57.His bike has always been pretty good. Taking is running to a

:12:58. > :13:04.different level. We have not seen him race against the best athletes

:13:05. > :13:12.in the last couple of years. Alistair and Jonathan I made to

:13:13. > :13:23.race, and Javier, interesting to see. Javier is a racer, you must

:13:24. > :13:26.have his reasons for doing that. Selected for the Olympics, looking

:13:27. > :13:33.to peak for Rio. Picking the best path for him. Unusual not to have

:13:34. > :13:42.seen a match racing so far. Here are the men's highlights with Matt and

:13:43. > :13:51.Ali. This time Jonny Brownlee will be hoping to produce a decent result

:13:52. > :14:06.for the men. Interesting line-up. Still no Javier gamers. -- Javier

:14:07. > :14:29.Gomez. Dangerfield then the women, 63

:14:30. > :14:34.triathletes taking part. -- a bigger field than for the woman. The final

:14:35. > :14:40.countdown in Cape Town. The first sprint competition of the World

:14:41. > :14:45.Triathlon series for the men is under way. Keep an eye out for

:14:46. > :14:49.Jonathan Brownlee and Adam Barrett and racing for Great Britain.

:14:50. > :14:54.Alistair picked up an infection in his feet following the slip-up on

:14:55. > :14:57.the carpet in the Gold Coast. Arrived in South Africa, never

:14:58. > :15:12.recovered his health, decided WhatsApp. Vincent Lewis -- decided

:15:13. > :15:13.to opt out. Luis is also out. No Murray for the South Africans,

:15:14. > :15:24.nursing a broken collarbone. Great conditions here as we saw in

:15:25. > :15:28.the women's race and the line they take will be interesting after we

:15:29. > :15:33.saw Flora Duffy go really wide and gaining a good ten metres. We are

:15:34. > :15:37.looking out for Richard Varga, a great swimmer who trains with the

:15:38. > :15:42.Brownie brothers and Henry Schuman will be well up there. Hoping that

:15:43. > :15:49.Jonny Brownlee is fully recovered from his heat exhaustion -- Henri

:15:50. > :15:56.Schoeman. One figure has surged to the front of the swim, Aurelien

:15:57. > :16:00.Raphael with clean water, clean, calm water ahead of him and he is

:16:01. > :16:08.ploughing through it at a high rate. It is a solid start and he is joined

:16:09. > :16:12.by Alois Knabl, the Austrian, in second position. It is unusual not

:16:13. > :16:19.to seek Richard Varga orbs Henri Schoeman at the front -- or.

:16:20. > :16:23.Particularly as it is only 750 metres and it is vital that the

:16:24. > :16:28.strong swimmers have their best game here because if they don't, there is

:16:29. > :16:33.no chance of a breakaway. Mentioning Raphael, it is the first time we

:16:34. > :16:37.have seen him this year but he did have a win in the European Cup in

:16:38. > :16:42.Portugal a few weeks ago so he is in great form. But unusual not to seek

:16:43. > :16:49.Richard Varga and Henri Schoeman at the front. Rarely in Raphael of

:16:50. > :16:54.France leading them through the head of Alois Knabl, the Austrian, who

:16:55. > :16:59.has a couple of metres to try to make up if he is going to stay with

:17:00. > :17:05.the Frenchman. The numbers to watch for with British interest, Jonathan

:17:06. > :17:11.Brownlee has five, Adam Bowden as eight. Richard Varga wears 12 and

:17:12. > :17:18.Henri Schoeman wears number nine, the South African. They are going

:17:19. > :17:23.fairly cleanly around that buoy. You don't want to get trapped on the

:17:24. > :17:29.inside. There is quite a gap between first and last with first already

:17:30. > :17:35.going around the second buoy. This could be lightning fast. The wet

:17:36. > :17:39.suits give them a bit of extra buoyancy in the saltwater and in the

:17:40. > :17:43.cold conditions they are keen to get through this quickly. We saw the

:17:44. > :17:48.lead established by Flora Duffy in the women's competition and how she

:17:49. > :17:53.capitalised upon that, leading the bike section for almost its entirety

:17:54. > :17:57.until the tail end of the final lap when she was caught. She still

:17:58. > :18:03.crossed the line in first place at the end of that section. Aurelien

:18:04. > :18:07.Raphael is obviously keen to replicate that sort of form in the

:18:08. > :18:16.men's competition. Another Frenchman in the top three, Dorian Coninx is

:18:17. > :18:21.with Raphael former Junior World Championship and 2014 under 23 world

:18:22. > :18:25.champion. Great pedigree from him but not a great start to the season

:18:26. > :18:33.for the former world and under 23 champion, he was 44th in Abu Dhabi.

:18:34. > :18:42.The ships moored in the harbour, calm water for these swimmers. This

:18:43. > :18:48.time a year ago they had to cut the same stage in half because the

:18:49. > :18:54.conditions were so unfavourable, cold and choppy. This is just a

:18:55. > :18:59.single lap as it is a sprint triathlon, the first of the season

:19:00. > :19:05.which means we have a swim of 750 metres followed by a 20 kilometre

:19:06. > :19:10.cycle and eight 5,000-metre run to finish things off. Dorian Coninx of

:19:11. > :19:16.France is in third position. The French are first and third at the

:19:17. > :19:24.moment and the man in between them is Alois Knabl from Austria. They

:19:25. > :19:32.are leading the way. Aurelien Raphael has a really easy leg kick.

:19:33. > :19:35.It is so smooth. He makes light work of this, when you see some of the

:19:36. > :19:41.others who are not so strong thrashing around but he has that

:19:42. > :19:45.lovely two beat kick, looks totally comfortable and does not look like

:19:46. > :19:50.he is losing any energy at all. When you are that strong a swimmer, you

:19:51. > :19:55.can stay out all the mess as we can see as they go past the buoy,

:19:56. > :19:59.knocking each other, and it is very difficult in the middle of the pack.

:20:00. > :20:04.Interesting to see where Jonny Brownlee is coming out of the water

:20:05. > :20:10.and Adam Bowden and of course world number one Mario Mola. They have to

:20:11. > :20:14.go around the red buoy in the middle of your screen and then turn right

:20:15. > :20:21.because the exit point is on the extreme right of the pontoon as we

:20:22. > :20:27.look from the helicopter. The field is spread far and wide in the water

:20:28. > :20:34.here in Cape Town and we have yet to get a sighting of Jonathan Brownlee

:20:35. > :20:42.or Adam Bowden or Mario Mola. He is the series leader, looking for his

:20:43. > :20:46.fourth win in a row. He won the World Series final in Chicago last

:20:47. > :20:57.September and has taken the first two races of the new season in Abu

:20:58. > :21:02.Dhabi and on the Gold Coast. Mola is starting to look like the

:21:03. > :21:07.pre-Olympic favourite but Javier Gomez will have ideas upon improving

:21:08. > :21:14.on the silver medal he won in London four years ago. Gomez has been very

:21:15. > :21:18.quiet. We have heard he is taking things cautiously, a bit of an

:21:19. > :21:25.injury, but unusual not to see him racing. He normally races come rain

:21:26. > :21:35.or shine on all distances and dominated the series last year.

:21:36. > :21:40.Alois Knabl has taken up the pace setting for Austria and he is joined

:21:41. > :21:44.by Richard Varga who is never far away from leadership of the swim

:21:45. > :21:48.section and he has forced his way through the field in the second

:21:49. > :21:54.position. I would not be surprised if Varga, with his finishing power,

:21:55. > :21:59.will steam past Alois Knabl and right on cue, the Slovakian moves

:22:00. > :22:03.into first position. Richard Varga determined to keep up his strong

:22:04. > :22:09.record of being the first man out of the water and he is. He leads them

:22:10. > :22:13.out towards transition followed by others can book and Dorian Coninx

:22:14. > :22:16.and Arabian Raphael who led the way, followed by Jonathan Brownlee, good

:22:17. > :22:25.shape from him, in equal fifth with Henri Schoeman.

:22:26. > :22:33.We are looking out for Adam Bowden, the second union Jack and he is

:22:34. > :22:40.through in 19th position, with that front group. He will not be too far

:22:41. > :22:45.removed from the leading pack when they take formation on the bike. The

:22:46. > :22:48.good news is that Jonathan Brownlee, the Olympic bronze-medallist, will

:22:49. > :22:53.arrive with this fund pack in transition. They were led out of the

:22:54. > :23:00.water by his training partner, Richard Varga. Jonny Brownlee

:23:01. > :23:05.stepping out of the wet suit, shop work, making sure it is in the

:23:06. > :23:10.plastic box and barges his way out of transition with the front group.

:23:11. > :23:14.Somebody has missed their stand, Adam Bowden overshot his bike and

:23:15. > :23:20.went too far before doubling back. Ira Moller has arrived, the series

:23:21. > :23:23.leader and world number one. Helmet on, stepping out of the wet suit at

:23:24. > :23:30.the same time, placing it in the box, picking up his bike and he has

:23:31. > :23:35.a bit of catching up to do. The leaders are leaving transition with

:23:36. > :23:39.Jonathan Brownlee right in the thick of the action. If they are going to

:23:40. > :23:43.do any damage at the front of this pack, because that was a big train

:23:44. > :23:48.coming out of the swim, it gives all the athletes a chance to get on even

:23:49. > :23:52.if they are 20 or 30 seconds down so it is vital on the bike that they

:23:53. > :24:01.put their heads down and work to get a bit of a break away. Mario Mola

:24:02. > :24:06.officially clocked 29 seconds off the lead coming out of the water. We

:24:07. > :24:12.have 11 or 12, we will get an official count in a moment. I think

:24:13. > :24:20.it is 11. The course has two different sized laps for the

:24:21. > :24:23.cyclists to negotiate, the first is 4.8 kilometres because they had to

:24:24. > :24:29.head back to the secondary part of the course may be Green Point

:24:30. > :24:35.Athletics Stadium where the second transition is and the remaining four

:24:36. > :24:40.laps are 3.8 kilometres. One long lap and for short laps to give us

:24:41. > :24:46.the total distance of 20 kilometres -- four short laps. Dorian Coninx

:24:47. > :24:51.from France is taking his turn at the front of the field and right

:24:52. > :24:57.behind him on his wheel is Jonathan Brownlee of Great Britain, the

:24:58. > :25:04.Olympic bronze-medallist. He takes pole position at the front. There

:25:05. > :25:11.are plenty of others keen to try to do some damage early on. They might

:25:12. > :25:16.be aware that the gap to Mario Mola was getting onto 30 seconds after

:25:17. > :25:21.the swim and they will want to build that and stretch it even further.

:25:22. > :25:24.These guys know the importance of working these first few kilometres

:25:25. > :25:29.really hard if they have any chance of staying awake. We are missing

:25:30. > :25:33.Richard Murray who came off his bike and broke his collarbone so he is

:25:34. > :25:38.not around to rally that second pack as we see him do so often so Mola

:25:39. > :25:46.all have to work hard to get back into this. -- will have to work

:25:47. > :25:50.hard. During Coninx has had his best result in recent years in sprint

:25:51. > :25:55.races, finishing sixth in London last year and improved on that in

:25:56. > :25:59.Hamburg by taking fourth position so the Frenchman will fancy his chances

:26:00. > :26:06.today and he could be the best of them, especially in the absence of

:26:07. > :26:10.the French number one, Vincent Luis, the only Frenchman to win a World

:26:11. > :26:15.Triathlon Series race in recent years. Towards the end of the first

:26:16. > :26:19.long lap, they hit the blue athletics track, quite a sharp

:26:20. > :26:25.right-hander and one or two drifted out of the cones, taking a few extra

:26:26. > :26:30.metres to make sure they stay on board. At the end of the first lap

:26:31. > :26:38.on the bike we will get a full check on the runners and riders.

:26:39. > :26:41.Salvisberg and Toth are there. Zachaeus of Luxembourg, Jonny

:26:42. > :26:47.Brownlee, Richard Varga, Dorian Coninx, Fernando Alarza. A bit

:26:48. > :26:54.further back, Schoeman is with that group. He is a former top distance

:26:55. > :26:59.swimmer in South Africa, the best distance swimmer in his age group,

:27:00. > :27:02.the 24-year-old from Durban. We talked about Richard Murray breaking

:27:03. > :27:05.his collarbone, it seems to be a habit for the South Africans because

:27:06. > :27:15.in 2011 Schoeman had a massive motorbike accident and shattered his

:27:16. > :27:19.right collarbone -- mountain bike. These athletes in the front group

:27:20. > :27:24.have done a pretty good job so far of staying away from the second

:27:25. > :27:30.group and have about 20 seconds. If that keeps growing, it will be good

:27:31. > :27:33.news for Jonny Brownlee. Adam Bowden is in the second pack along with

:27:34. > :27:38.Mario Mola. We don't have exact details of who is where in that

:27:39. > :27:42.second pack but it is good news for Jonny Brownlee. You mentioned

:27:43. > :27:46.Schoeman, just trying to get back on but they have to work hard because

:27:47. > :27:51.the pace is on in the fund pack at the moment. A group of 11 and then a

:27:52. > :27:59.trio tried to bridge the gap -- fund pack. They might just do it. The

:28:00. > :28:04.front group slows and the chasing group of three are in single file

:28:05. > :28:09.and lined up ready to join in when the road widens and they have a bit

:28:10. > :28:16.more space to form a peloton. The second lap under way. Strong, good,

:28:17. > :28:21.technical effort needed on this course because there are points

:28:22. > :28:25.where it is incredibly tight and you have 180 degrees turns which makes

:28:26. > :28:30.it hard when you are coming in at pace and we don't want any crashes.

:28:31. > :28:34.Jonny Brownlee is absolutely hammering and it is brilliant to

:28:35. > :28:45.see. His brother Alistair won this race over a full distance last year,

:28:46. > :28:52.beating Gomez into second and Luis into third. Jonny Brownlee will work

:28:53. > :28:55.harder than anybody else in the bike section, often sharing the bulk of

:28:56. > :29:06.the hard graft with older brother Alistair. He is the only Brownlees

:29:07. > :29:11.in race today. -- Brownlee. They are in lap two. I think the second pack

:29:12. > :29:15.are going to find it difficult to make any inroads because they are

:29:16. > :29:20.working effectively as a group. If they are going to stay away from

:29:21. > :29:25.Mario Mola, the only way to beat him on the run, is if they come into

:29:26. > :29:29.transition with a good 30 seconds. We don't know how well Jonny

:29:30. > :29:32.Brownlee is running because the wheels came off on the Gold Coast

:29:33. > :29:38.and he is about the only one along with Alarza who could go with Mola.

:29:39. > :29:46.Mola is in the second pack at the moment, about 30 seconds down.

:29:47. > :29:54.This is the second chasing group now. Numerous. Meanwhile, the

:29:55. > :30:00.leaders have arrived at the athletics track. We will see what

:30:01. > :30:05.the gap is between the leaders, with Jonny Brownlee at the front of the

:30:06. > :30:10.field, and the chasers. Brownlee again going for broke to cross the

:30:11. > :30:16.line, clocking the quickest time with Coninx, Alarza, father, Le

:30:17. > :30:22.Corre, Dodds and others with him. -- Varga. Schoeman has managed to claw

:30:23. > :30:28.his way back up and join that front group. The leaders already 22,

:30:29. > :30:34.heading toward 30 seconds off the pace. They are on their way through

:30:35. > :30:38.and the chasers are about to hit the stadium. Already the time difference

:30:39. > :30:50.tells us that it is 28 seconds. Adam Boulton is in the second group.

:30:51. > :30:55.Mario Mola and Ben Shaw from Ireland. 28 seconds between the

:30:56. > :31:16.leading group and the chasers. The finger this causes you get a

:31:17. > :31:24.chance to see where everyone is. The second pack saw the front pack,

:31:25. > :31:30.given them motivation. 27 seconds the gap. Officially one second taken

:31:31. > :31:36.out of the lead by the chasing group. It has been over one year

:31:37. > :31:48.since Jonny Brownlee had his last World Triathlon Series win. He's yet

:31:49. > :31:55.to win this year. Nobody apart from Mario Mola has won this year. Back

:31:56. > :32:00.in the Greenpoint athletics stadium, softer surface under their wheels.

:32:01. > :32:10.The end of the latest lap. We will get a full check on the time

:32:11. > :32:13.difference. It was 28 seconds. It may well have been reduced. Let's

:32:14. > :32:38.get a full check on those times. It is 27. From 28, to 27. No real

:32:39. > :32:48.difference between the leaders and the chasers. Will somebody start to

:32:49. > :33:02.think about surging clear of this front group of about 15? At the head

:33:03. > :33:10.of this World Triathlon Series in Cape Town. They are coming up to the

:33:11. > :33:16.turning point. The racer slows as everybody takes care to avoid

:33:17. > :33:20.contact. Sufficient room with about 15 to give everybody space to

:33:21. > :33:30.breathe, and to negotiate the hairpin. As they get to visualise

:33:31. > :33:36.the chasing pack heading in the opposite direction. We are at the

:33:37. > :33:41.back of that chasing pack, with the Russian, keeping himself out of

:33:42. > :33:45.trouble. Some squeaking breaks as they turn. Full speed ahead at the

:33:46. > :33:50.front of the field. The leaders looking to excel further away from

:33:51. > :33:57.the Mario Mola group. At this rate, Mario Mola will have to produce a

:33:58. > :34:07.miracle 5000 metres run to register his fourth world triathlon in a row.

:34:08. > :34:12.Winning the last one of 2015, and the first two 2016. The pace that

:34:13. > :34:17.these guys have displayed throughout the ride as been electrifying.

:34:18. > :34:24.Approximately a 32nd gap between the leaders in the chasers. This is the

:34:25. > :34:30.second pack. I can see the colours of Spain. Benjamin Shaw as well. The

:34:31. > :34:43.first real site we have seen of Mario Mola. Sitting behind Bowden a

:34:44. > :34:48.British athlete. This is where the triathlon will end. 400 metre lap of

:34:49. > :34:53.the athletics track at the end of the five kilometre run. Once again,

:34:54. > :35:06.as it has been throughout the bicycle stage, Jonny Brownlee

:35:07. > :35:22.leading them through. Some familiar names below him. Including Thomas

:35:23. > :35:25.Toff, of Hungary. On their way out for the final circuit of the

:35:26. > :35:33.waterfront and beyond, as the chasers find themselves 28 seconds

:35:34. > :35:40.off the pace. 28, then 27, then 28. Equalling no real change at all.

:35:41. > :35:44.This is looking good for the likes of Jonny Brownlee, don't seem to be

:35:45. > :35:50.making any inroads. Just about 3.8 climate is. It will be pretty hard

:35:51. > :35:56.for them to pull anything back. The front pack continuing to work well

:35:57. > :36:00.together. They are on their way for the last 3.8 kilometres on two

:36:01. > :36:06.wheels before the bikes are hung up for transition. The helmets are left

:36:07. > :36:16.behind. The running shoes are put on. They begin the final stage, 5000

:36:17. > :36:22.metres race around Cape Town on foot. Two lapse of 2.3. The final

:36:23. > :36:26.circuit in the Greenpoint athletics stadium, 400 metres, do decide who

:36:27. > :36:34.wins the gold medal in Cape Town this afternoon. 28 seconds the gap

:36:35. > :36:39.between the leaders and the chasers. Certainly enough of a buffer for

:36:40. > :36:50.Jonny Brownlee and Fernando Alarza, our two strong runners in the front

:36:51. > :36:53.pack. 28 seconds would be hard to pull back for even the fastest

:36:54. > :37:02.runners, like Mario Mola. Jonny Brownlee gesticulating, keep the

:37:03. > :37:07.pace up. You want to come into the transition with maximum time ever

:37:08. > :37:11.Mario Mola. We have seen the workflow is shared between Jonny

:37:12. > :37:17.Brownlee, one of two of the French guys. And Fernando Alarza. Taking a

:37:18. > :37:21.bit of time at the front. Others steering clear of the graft. Keeping

:37:22. > :37:28.themselves near the back of the field. As they line up to make the

:37:29. > :37:38.turn for the final time-out, by the lighthouse. Before they rise,

:37:39. > :37:46.Jonathan Brownlee on the rear wheel of the leader. At that point, they

:37:47. > :37:49.get to visualise the chasers, heading back towards the furthest

:37:50. > :37:55.reaches of this Cape Town triathlon. They are on their way, on the home

:37:56. > :38:01.stretch, back towards the Greenpoint athletics stadium for the final lap,

:38:02. > :38:08.the second transition change, and the start of the five K Talat is --

:38:09. > :38:34.five kilometres run. You wonder whether it may have taken something

:38:35. > :38:38.at a Jonny Brownlee's legs. The chasing group working as hard as

:38:39. > :38:43.they can to cut that gap. Into the stadium for the final time. Parting

:38:44. > :38:50.company with the feet resting on top of that pedals. They will go into

:38:51. > :38:58.the final stage on the bike. Jonny Brownlee making sure he gets off the

:38:59. > :39:04.bike by the dismount line. They will hope for a clean, efficient

:39:05. > :39:08.transition. Right shoe, left shoe. Now has to remove the bike helmet.

:39:09. > :39:21.He is the first to strike. Jonny Brownlee leaves transition in

:39:22. > :39:28.company with Dorian Coninx. This is Brownlee's to win now. Mario Mola

:39:29. > :39:35.arrives in transition. He has about 20 seconds to make up. Nice clean

:39:36. > :39:40.transition. He is on his way, the familiar white visor across his

:39:41. > :39:46.head. He has a lot of closing down to do. The leading group of about

:39:47. > :39:55.eight are on their way. The pace is being dictated by Jonathan Brownlee,

:39:56. > :39:59.of great Britain. Great transition by Mario Mola, super speedy. 28

:40:00. > :40:04.seconds to pull-back in Jonny Brownlee, that is pretty tough. Over

:40:05. > :40:11.ten calamitous, perhaps a chance. Over five, he will have his work cut

:40:12. > :40:17.out. Two lapse of 2.3, then a final lap of the track. 400 metres around

:40:18. > :40:22.the Greenpoint athletics track, to complete this triathlon in Cape

:40:23. > :40:28.Town. Brownlee is bouncing on the front. Here comes Fernando Alarza of

:40:29. > :40:33.Spain. Goes shoulder to shoulder with Jonny Brownlee. He wants to get

:40:34. > :40:40.involved at the front. Moving things up through the gears. He has reached

:40:41. > :40:52.the front at a slightly increased pace. The others have had to reply.

:40:53. > :40:58.There is the smaller figure of Henri Schoeman. He is the summing

:40:59. > :41:05.specialist. He is looking to be the best of the South Africans with

:41:06. > :41:15.Richard Murray's absence. We pick up the second group, in second position

:41:16. > :41:21.is Mario Mola. He has the big Russian for company. Silva as well.

:41:22. > :41:30.Interesting, the difference in sizes. Fernandez doing very well to

:41:31. > :41:38.stick with Mola. The early stages in this five kilometre race now. Dorian

:41:39. > :41:42.Coninx, of France. Interesting athlete, only 22 years old, only ten

:41:43. > :41:51.starts in the world triathlon series. Very strong junior and under

:41:52. > :41:57.23 athlete. His best result only World Series, fourth place in

:41:58. > :42:05.Hamburg. Other than that, we have not seen much of him in the top 20,

:42:06. > :42:15.not on best form in Abu Dhabi, 44. Leading the way with Jonathan

:42:16. > :42:20.Brownlee sat behind Alarza Spain. Alarza, 25 years of age. Runner-up

:42:21. > :42:28.in the Gold Coast. Handed that because of Jonny Brownlee's heat

:42:29. > :42:34.exhaustion. He has had improving for whether he has raced in recent

:42:35. > :42:42.times. In the Olympic test event, he was 11. In stark home, he was ten.

:42:43. > :42:55.Sixth place in the grand final in Chicago. He has been getting better

:42:56. > :42:59.race by race. He has been outclassed by this man, the best of the

:43:00. > :43:06.Spaniards, the best in the world. Mario Mola. Sadly not dominating

:43:07. > :43:13.that chasing pack. Interesting race. Tough when you race as hard as you

:43:14. > :43:16.did in the Gold Coast, Jese weeks ago, flying down, with the time

:43:17. > :43:19.difference. Some athletes will recover better then others. -- just

:43:20. > :43:31.weeks ago. We were hoping to see a Frenchman up

:43:32. > :43:40.near the front of the field. We were not suspecting it to be Dorian

:43:41. > :43:45.Coninx. We were expecting Luis to make his debut this year in Cape

:43:46. > :43:56.Town, but injury keeping him out of contention. Henri Schoeman, Dodds,

:43:57. > :44:08.then there is another gap to Mario Mola. He is racing with his

:44:09. > :44:09.compatriot, Hernandez. Then Parreira and Silva, the two Portuguese make

:44:10. > :44:31.the turn. Fernando Alarza leading them into

:44:32. > :44:34.the athletic Stadium ahead of Coninx of France and Jonathan Brownlee

:44:35. > :44:44.keeping out of trouble in third place. They are getting a warm

:44:45. > :44:52.welcome in the Green Point Ataturk Stadium and this track will see the

:44:53. > :45:02.race can include in about 2.7 kilometres -- Athletics Stadium.

:45:03. > :45:10.They leave the stadium again for another lap on the track as Joao

:45:11. > :45:17.Pereira takes a standing penalty, that must have been for an

:45:18. > :45:23.infringement earlier in the race. Mario Mola only in 12th position at

:45:24. > :45:29.the moment. He is too far behind to claw his way back to a podium place.

:45:30. > :45:33.He has got back about four or five second but that will not be enough

:45:34. > :45:43.on this last lap of the run. Fernando Alarza looking very slick,

:45:44. > :45:47.he looks a bit streamlined having shaved his head! He looks mean and

:45:48. > :45:54.lean and he is dictating the pace at the moment. As you said, he is

:45:55. > :46:00.growing every race but growing in confidence and he really believes he

:46:01. > :46:04.can do it. 20 seconds to Mola, that will be accurate to within a second

:46:05. > :46:08.or two but with just over two kilometres to go, these three are

:46:09. > :46:14.well clear and this is the podium we are looking at but which order will

:46:15. > :46:26.it be in? Can Alarza eat Brownlee? That is the question that will be

:46:27. > :46:31.answered shortly -- beat Brownlee. Alarza will see this as an

:46:32. > :46:36.opportunity to rubber-stamp his Olympic credentials. The dark horse

:46:37. > :46:42.is Dorian Coninx because we are not quite sure what he has over the

:46:43. > :46:48.remainder of this 5,000-metre run. Schoeman is holding fourth place, Le

:46:49. > :46:53.Corre is clinging on to fifth, Mola is starting to make a move through

:46:54. > :46:58.the ranks and he has taken out right sixth position at the moment. It is

:46:59. > :47:05.still wide open, any one of these three could strike and launch a

:47:06. > :47:10.decisive campaign to win the race. At the moment, Mola has a race

:47:11. > :47:15.within a race because he has his eyes on peer Le Corre and in front

:47:16. > :47:20.of him, Hernandez. Mola knows that points could be crucial to date in

:47:21. > :47:26.his quest to win the World Triathlon Series overall title will stop I

:47:27. > :47:32.think Coninx has just lost a metre or three. Alarza and Brownlee surged

:47:33. > :47:35.ahead of the Frenchman will stop Coninx will be scrapping to hold on

:47:36. > :47:42.to third position unless he can recover having watched the Spaniard

:47:43. > :47:47.and the Brit go ahead of him. He will want to stay in touch because

:47:48. > :47:52.when you start dropping off, it is hard to keep the motivation up when

:47:53. > :47:56.you are in no man's land. And Mario Mola is flying behind him so if he

:47:57. > :48:00.wants to hang on to third place, going one place higher than he did

:48:01. > :48:06.in Hamburg last year, Dorian Coninx is going to have to work pretty

:48:07. > :48:10.hard. Just over two kilometres to run and it is between Fernando

:48:11. > :48:14.Alarza of Spain and Jonathan Brownlee of Great Britain for the

:48:15. > :48:23.World Triathlon Series sprint victory here in Cape Town. Brownlee

:48:24. > :48:27.takes it up. Coninx is struggling in third, the effort the Frenchman is

:48:28. > :48:32.putting in is plain to see on his face. Further down the track, Mario

:48:33. > :48:39.Mola getting a little closer and he has gone past Henri Schoeman of

:48:40. > :48:43.South Africa. His chance of a podium for the host nation is vanishing as

:48:44. > :48:51.Mola picks up the pace, the world number one. The man to beat this

:48:52. > :48:58.season, unbeatable so far in World Triathlon Series races. But over the

:48:59. > :49:01.sprint distance today, he has been unable to match his team-mate

:49:02. > :49:06.Fernando Alarza and Jonathan Brownlee, who are leading the

:49:07. > :49:12.contest. The damage was done on the first part of the bike because Mola

:49:13. > :49:15.did not have a bad swim, but now look at Lhasa. There is about a mile

:49:16. > :49:25.to go, could he have gone a bit early? -- Alarza. He is trying to

:49:26. > :49:31.lose Jonny Brownlee, I don't think it is decisive, he has not broken

:49:32. > :49:36.Brownlee with that burst but another and Brownlee might struggle to

:49:37. > :49:41.recover. Fernando Alarza ahead, Jonny Brownlee will not consider

:49:42. > :49:46.this a lost cause just yet. Two metres between them as Alarza tries

:49:47. > :49:53.to stretch it further. They head back towards the Green Point

:49:54. > :49:56.Athletics Stadium. Dorian Coninx digging deep into his resources and

:49:57. > :50:04.reserves to hold onto third position. He will have a fight for

:50:05. > :50:10.that final podium position with Mario Mola potentially in the final

:50:11. > :50:16.stages as Alarza goes clear of Brownlee. Was that break too early?

:50:17. > :50:21.Mola has left Schoeman behind and he can see Coninx. Alarza continues to

:50:22. > :50:26.stretch the gap but will he have the final burst of speed on the one

:50:27. > :50:30.metre lap in the Green Point Athletics Stadium to take his first

:50:31. > :50:36.ever World Triathlon Series victory? I wondered if it was experience that

:50:37. > :50:40.he was lacking but obviously not. I thought he went too early but the

:50:41. > :50:46.gap continues to open between himself and Jonny Brownlee. Fernando

:50:47. > :50:51.Alarza of Spain heads towards the blue athletics track now with one

:50:52. > :50:56.lap standing between him and his first World Triathlon Series

:50:57. > :51:01.victory. The gap has opened up over Jonathan Brownlee and it is

:51:02. > :51:06.significant. And barring a mishap, Alarza will win in Cape Town. He

:51:07. > :51:12.glances over his left shoulder and hits the carpet for the first time.

:51:13. > :51:19.One more lap to go. Past the bikes left at the end of the 20 kilometre

:51:20. > :51:22.ride, on the final lap, four seconds between him and Brownlee and a

:51:23. > :51:30.further four seconds to Coninx and we will then check on the difference

:51:31. > :51:35.between him and Mola. Coninx is running himself absolutely ragged to

:51:36. > :51:42.hold onto third place. Mola is just too far removed but it is all about

:51:43. > :51:47.Fernando Alarza. The 25-year-old Spaniard. Second in the Gold Coast,

:51:48. > :51:53.I suggested that a victory could not be far away with his improving

:51:54. > :51:58.results. Six in Chicago, fourth in Abu Dhabi, runner-up on the Gold

:51:59. > :52:04.Coast and he is on his way to his first World Triathlon Series win.

:52:05. > :52:09.Mario Mola, his compatriot, it looks to close down Dorian Coninx on the

:52:10. > :52:16.last few metres here in the Green Point Athletics Stadium. Le Corre

:52:17. > :52:19.takes it up from Schoeman. Alarza raises his finger in victory and

:52:20. > :52:28.starts to soak up the atmosphere. The glances round, Jonny Brownlee is

:52:29. > :52:32.too far behind. It will be a first ever win for Fernando Alarza of

:52:33. > :52:38.Spain and he can't quite believe it. Second place to Jonny Brownlee of

:52:39. > :52:40.Great Britain and third, after a gutsy finish, for Dorian Coninx of

:52:41. > :52:52.France. What a race in Cape Town. Alarza has not yet qualified for the

:52:53. > :52:56.Olympics but his credentials have been given a massive boost as his

:52:57. > :53:00.team-mate Mario Mola crosses the line in fourth place and he is the

:53:01. > :53:06.first to congratulate Fernando Alarza. Henri Schoeman comes home as

:53:07. > :53:15.the best South African in sixth place, Hernandez crossing the line

:53:16. > :53:19.in eighth place. A first ever World Triathlon Series victory for

:53:20. > :53:27.Fernando Alonso of Spain -- Fernando Alarza.

:53:28. > :53:34.Adam Bowden of Great Britain finished in 16th position. Mario

:53:35. > :53:47.Mola has improved his lead at the top of the standings.

:53:48. > :53:55.I think it was the best race in my life, I'm so happy and now I think I

:53:56. > :53:59.can qualify for Rio finally and I'm now training hard for Rio de

:54:00. > :54:06.Janeiro. Third in Gold Coast, second today, going the right way? I didn't

:54:07. > :54:10.finish on a stretcher that time so that start! I have felt terrible

:54:11. > :54:15.since the Gold Coast, it takes a lot out of you and I wasn't even short

:54:16. > :54:19.if I would start today. But I knew I had to commit everything on the swim

:54:20. > :54:26.and bike and keep the fast runners behind and me and Dorian drove the

:54:27. > :54:31.bike. He was strong as an ox and it set up for Fernando who played a

:54:32. > :54:37.tactical game. Second, not a victory but from where I was two weeks ago

:54:38. > :54:42.it is a big improvement. Everybody knows Mario's running, I knew I

:54:43. > :54:48.could not run a five kilometre really fast so I knew I had to work

:54:49. > :54:53.hard on the bike. I drove really hard on the first two or three

:54:54. > :54:59.kilometres and the gap was around 25 seconds and I knew that was a long

:55:00. > :55:04.way. The first podium, it is impossible to describe, I'm just so

:55:05. > :55:09.happy. It is amazing, the best day in my life. And for the Brownlee

:55:10. > :55:14.fans at home, more to come? Hopefully, it was all going well

:55:15. > :55:18.until I got sunburned before the Gold Coast and Alistair started to

:55:19. > :55:25.feel ill. Hopefully we can turn it around, we have at a better World

:55:26. > :55:32.Series in lead in a few weeks. And a first-ever world triathlon series

:55:33. > :55:48.win for Spain's Fernando Alarza. A hard earned victory.

:55:49. > :56:00.Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the world! Nicola Adams has just

:56:01. > :56:08.made history! That is a huge jump! Laura Trott is world champion. Mo

:56:09. > :56:12.Farah is streaking away! That is it for our Cape Town coverage, next up

:56:13. > :56:18.it is Yokohama. Helen, you are not doing that but what about Leeds in

:56:19. > :56:23.June? Hopefully I will do that we have not made a complete plan yet

:56:24. > :56:27.and have not thought much past Gold Coast so we will sit down with the

:56:28. > :56:32.team and go through it but I would love to race in Leeds, it is always

:56:33. > :56:37.good to do a home race. You are not in you, but Gwen Jorgensen is, after

:56:38. > :56:42.you broke her winning streak. How do you think she will respond? I

:56:43. > :56:48.suppose there is some pressure off, she is going to the Olympics. An

:56:49. > :56:52.unbeaten run might have increased the pressure so it could take it off

:56:53. > :56:57.but it could be a psychological lock, we don't know, she hasn't been

:56:58. > :57:01.beaten that much! But she has a great team and she will do

:57:02. > :57:06.everything to get back to her winning ways. And what was your

:57:07. > :57:14.assessment of what shape Gwen was in? Was she close to her best or a

:57:15. > :57:18.bit off? Over the last three or four years she has improved everything, a

:57:19. > :57:26.better swimmer and bike rider and a runner. Her form, we can only judge

:57:27. > :57:30.on the race day and the bike ride was very hard. That forced her to

:57:31. > :57:38.run and race in a different manner and that was what was most poignant,

:57:39. > :57:42.she could not run the 33.3 she normally runs. She might be in good

:57:43. > :57:46.form but the race was different. It will be fascinating to see how Gwen

:57:47. > :57:50.Jorgensen gets on in Yokohama, the Brownlees are on the start line as

:57:51. > :57:53.well as Javier Gomez starting his 2016 season and we will have

:57:54. > :57:57.extensive coverage, all of the action from the men's and women's

:57:58. > :58:02.race live on the red button. And if it that is too early, we will have

:58:03. > :58:08.highlights on BBC Two on Sunday the 15th of May. And if that was not

:58:09. > :58:11.enough, on Saturday you can see a fascinating programme looking into

:58:12. > :58:17.the relationship and success so far of the Brownlee brothers. That is it

:58:18. > :58:21.from beautiful south Wales, thank you for your company and to mark and

:58:22. > :58:25.Helen for your hospitality and best of luck for the rest of the season.

:58:26. > :58:29.Fingers crossed. Until next time, goodbye.

:58:30. > :58:45.We are ready to race in beautiful Cape Town.

:58:46. > :58:53.Victory to Non Stanford of Great Britain! A first win for Fernando

:58:54. > :58:58.Alarza of Spain! It is runner-up for Stimpson.

:58:59. > :59:03.You're asking where I was when Lindsay Denton was murdered?
