:00:47. > :00:52.Welcome to this afternoon 's coverage of the latest round of the
:00:53. > :00:56.2017 world triathlon series which has been taking place this weekend
:00:57. > :01:02.in Montreal. Over the course of the next 90 minutes we will bring the
:01:03. > :01:05.extended highlights of the men and women from Canada. We have Jonny
:01:06. > :01:09.Brownlee coming up later on in the men's race, meanwhile back you're
:01:10. > :01:19.watching the race with us is another familiar face. The world under 23
:01:20. > :01:27.champion. The champion of the world for 2013.
:01:28. > :01:38.It is first in Madrid on one of the hardest courses there is. A
:01:39. > :01:43.sensational race for Non Stanford. Thank you for joining us, great to
:01:44. > :01:49.have you back, you explained you had injury problems this season so how
:01:50. > :01:53.is the rehab going? I had issues with my Achilles and rehab is taking
:01:54. > :01:57.a bit longer than anticipated, I hope to be back in time for the
:01:58. > :02:01.World Series in Stockholm but it's looking more likely it will be
:02:02. > :02:04.Nottingham. We are looking forward to watching the races and getting
:02:05. > :02:14.your thoughts but before we do that lets get our bearings for the
:02:15. > :02:23.series. Six races down, three to go, after Saint is wins for Javier
:02:24. > :02:27.Gomez, the 2017 series has been about two people, defending
:02:28. > :02:30.champion's Mario Mola and Flora Duffy. Both are undefeated in the
:02:31. > :02:37.past four World Series races they have taken part in. But it's not
:02:38. > :02:40.game over, yet. The remaining races, Montreal, Stockholm at the end of
:02:41. > :02:45.August and the grand final in Rotterdam will all be on tricky
:02:46. > :02:49.Olympic distance courses. Montreal and Rotterdam are unknown quantities
:02:50. > :02:53.for most of those taking part while Stockholm is known as one of the
:02:54. > :02:58.most gruelling triathlon is in the series. Come the end of the season
:02:59. > :03:04.one thing will be certain, whoever is crowned 2017 world champion will
:03:05. > :03:10.have earned it. Flora Duffy has been invincible hasn't she? She really
:03:11. > :03:13.has, came out at the start of the season in Yokohama after having a
:03:14. > :03:17.break with an injury and has been dominant ever since. She has seemed
:03:18. > :03:21.pretty unstoppable and it's put a cast of fear over the rest of the
:03:22. > :03:27.competition who are elevating her above which is capable of. It's a
:03:28. > :03:30.shame to watch her get so far away from the field but she is really
:03:31. > :03:34.strong and I think it will take something special to overturn it
:03:35. > :03:40.this season. What do you think the girls could or should be doing to
:03:41. > :03:44.get close to her? It is difficult, it's going to take somebody to beat
:03:45. > :03:49.Flora to eliminate the psychological advantage to see seems to have.
:03:50. > :03:55.There is no way she should have been riding away from the likes of
:03:56. > :03:58.Kirsten Kasper in Hamburg this year. If somebody can combat that in
:03:59. > :04:03.Montreal this weekend the rest of the field can gain confidence. It is
:04:04. > :04:12.that they factor isn't it? Absolutely. There is that Flora fear
:04:13. > :04:15.factor at the moment. She is good but I think the other girls should
:04:16. > :04:23.have more confidence and be more brave and go with her. In the year
:04:24. > :04:27.that Gwen Jorgensen is out having a baby, you could be up there but you
:04:28. > :04:32.are injured, it must be deeply frustrating to watch Flora Duffy
:04:33. > :04:36.dominating the way she is when you know you could be challenging her.
:04:37. > :04:41.It is always frustrating but particularly this year there was an
:04:42. > :04:49.opportunity for us to go out and perform and have a crack at that
:04:50. > :04:55.world title with Gwen missing. Let's take a look at the rankings.
:04:56. > :05:03.For the first time in 2017 Flora Duffy tops the women's rankings.
:05:04. > :05:07.Katie Zaferes third-place finish in Edmonton since dropped to second. A
:05:08. > :05:11.strong performance from Ashleigh Gentle this weekend could see her
:05:12. > :05:17.leapfrog Kirsten Kasper into the podium positions. Kirsten Kasper
:05:18. > :05:22.cannot climb above her current position.
:05:23. > :05:28.Slightly smaller women's line-up this weekend, no British
:05:29. > :05:32.participants sadly, you said you will be back for Nottingham for the
:05:33. > :05:36.British triathlon next relay couple which is exciting but what can you
:05:37. > :05:43.tell us about Jodie Stimpson and Vicky Holland? Jodie's rehab is
:05:44. > :05:47.going really well and looks to be back on course for coming back to
:05:48. > :05:50.Stockholm, Vicky we are not sure but hopefully by the end of the season
:05:51. > :05:57.we will see her out there. Looking forward to seeing them, it will be
:05:58. > :06:01.exciting to watch, back to the race this weekend, Ashleigh Gentle an
:06:02. > :06:05.athlete I have looked out over the years and thought she has loads of
:06:06. > :06:08.talent but her swimming has let her down, coming into the race this
:06:09. > :06:13.weekend she has a real chance if she has a good swim and makes a break on
:06:14. > :06:19.the bike to get herself into the top three in the rankings. Definitely,
:06:20. > :06:24.she has been knocking on the door of winning a world seizing race, like
:06:25. > :06:29.you say her swimming has let her down but with a smaller field it
:06:30. > :06:34.depends what happens, if it stays together she has a real opportunity
:06:35. > :06:38.to go out there and get her first World Series win. And as a strong
:06:39. > :06:42.biker it's a good course for her. You know she will be working hard
:06:43. > :06:45.behind you to try to bridge back up to the front group. With the course
:06:46. > :06:51.being a bit more technical and a few hells I think it will suit her.
:06:52. > :06:55.Taylor Knibb, what a race in Edmonton last weekend. She is the
:06:56. > :06:59.current world junior champion at just 19 years of age and getting on
:07:00. > :07:06.the podium last weekend made her the youngest ever athlete on a world
:07:07. > :07:09.triathlon series podium, was that a surprise? She is definitely a
:07:10. > :07:14.prospect, sort of surprised to see her do so well but if you look at
:07:15. > :07:20.her past results she has been biking with Flora in the past and that
:07:21. > :07:25.Montreal in the World Cup event they had over this same course she rode
:07:26. > :07:31.with Flora and had a break with her there. You have to remember she is a
:07:32. > :07:37.world junior champion so she has the pedigree to go on and be a fantastic
:07:38. > :07:41.athlete. Last weekend Edmonton was a sprint but this weekend it's a full
:07:42. > :07:46.distance which will affect her and she is still young. Yes I think the
:07:47. > :07:50.longer distance will affect her a lot, I think she will be more tired
:07:51. > :07:54.when she gets off the bike and 10K is a long way to run especially when
:07:55. > :07:59.you're are only 19 and she would have done that many Olympic distance
:08:00. > :08:04.races yet. I would be surprised to see a podium unless it's a big
:08:05. > :08:09.breakaway but she will definitely be up there which is exciting for her
:08:10. > :08:11.future and the future for America. Let's see what happened in the
:08:12. > :08:20.women's race. COMMENTATOR: Two collapse in the
:08:21. > :08:30.port then they pick up their bikes for nine laps of 4.5 kilometres. The
:08:31. > :08:38.bike a combination of climbs and some big turns, three technical
:08:39. > :08:43.turns around the course. And when they hang up their bikes they then
:08:44. > :09:00.have a 10,000 metre run to conclude. For laps of 2.5 kilometres.
:09:01. > :09:06.Olympic distance racing here in round seven of the 2017 world
:09:07. > :09:16.triathlon series in Montreal in Canada. This is the start list.
:09:17. > :09:23.Kirsten Kasper happy to be racing here as it is where her father is
:09:24. > :09:24.from. Ashleigh Gentle was a little sick on arrival but we believe she
:09:25. > :09:43.will start. There are no British athletes racing
:09:44. > :09:57.in the women's competition. 30 elite athletes lining up on the pontoon.
:09:58. > :10:05.And they are underway. Two laps. The second lap 630 metres. This course,
:10:06. > :10:10.Non Stanford, is a bit complicated because its eggs and zags, how much
:10:11. > :10:15.time have the athletes had to prepare, to rehearse with the
:10:16. > :10:20.requirements of this unique course? The athletes will have had access to
:10:21. > :10:23.it yesterday. Don't think they would have been allowed to get in the
:10:24. > :10:27.water any other time, before the race you have an hour you can warm
:10:28. > :10:31.up on the course and familiarise yourself with it if you need to so
:10:32. > :10:34.they will have done it once or twice and they will have been to a
:10:35. > :10:37.briefing where they were talked through the course so they will know
:10:38. > :10:45.what they are doing and where they are going. Approaching the three
:10:46. > :10:49.turning boys, they will go anticlockwise around and then back
:10:50. > :10:55.to complete the longer part of the swim, a long lap and then a short
:10:56. > :10:59.lap. The pace at the front pretty fast, no chop in the water, there
:11:00. > :11:05.was a bit of wind elder in the week but it's quite calm today. I know
:11:06. > :11:08.they are being quite strict on turning in the swimming because
:11:09. > :11:13.there have been incidents, what do you know about how the rules are
:11:14. > :11:17.being strengthened? They have always said that swimming behaviour will be
:11:18. > :11:25.monitored but they have rarely acted upon that, order has rarely been
:11:26. > :11:31.action taken. As you say that somebody's hand on somebody's head.
:11:32. > :11:36.That was the Belgian athlete taking a bit of a battering. They are
:11:37. > :11:42.getting more strict. Two Hungarian athletes recently disqualified at
:11:43. > :11:46.the World Cup for poor behaviour and I think it's important because we
:11:47. > :11:49.don't want to encourage poor sportsmanship and it can you really
:11:50. > :11:59.rough in there. I think the grey area comes when it's deciding if it
:12:00. > :12:06.is intentional or unintentional contact, there are always being
:12:07. > :12:12.unintentional contact when you have this many people swimming together
:12:13. > :12:16.in a small area. Zaferes at the front who started at the opposite
:12:17. > :12:23.end of the pontoon to Flora Duffy, she is leading them through just
:12:24. > :12:30.ahead of number ten, Takahashi from Japan. The strategy going to the
:12:31. > :12:34.opposite end of the pontoon from Flora Duffy seems to have paid off
:12:35. > :12:38.for Zaferes as she is first to emerge from the turn. We have
:12:39. > :12:44.another look at the start with Flora Duffy on the extreme right of that
:12:45. > :12:48.group and at the other end was Katie Zaferes, Zaferes emerging first
:12:49. > :12:54.after the turn which involved as usual a bit of rough and tumble.
:12:55. > :12:59.Zaferes we know can be near the front coming out of the water, last
:13:00. > :13:05.week she had a bit of a problem trying to stay with Flora Duffy as
:13:06. > :13:12.they left P1, what did you make of that, unable to go with Duffy? I was
:13:13. > :13:18.surprised, I would like to hope they were not paying enough attention and
:13:19. > :13:21.Flora Duffy is not that so much stronger she can ride away in the
:13:22. > :13:28.first hundred metres of the race. Noticed Katie was taking her time
:13:29. > :13:35.getting into her shoes, fiddling with them, when she should have just
:13:36. > :13:42.got on with the race. I think Flora took advantage of that and jumped
:13:43. > :13:45.ahead. At the end of the first lap after ten and a half minutes, just
:13:46. > :13:49.over ten and a half minute with a shorter second lap to follow we will
:13:50. > :13:54.get a check on exactly who has done what in the first half of the
:13:55. > :13:56.swimming. It is Katie Zaferes emerging first guided along the
:13:57. > :14:25.pontoon to dive back in. Taylor Knibb the runner-up last
:14:26. > :14:30.week. Huge group of 17 or 18 athletes within ten seconds of each
:14:31. > :14:33.other. You do not often see Katie leading the swim, she is in the
:14:34. > :14:41.front group but does not always lead out. Missing the likes of Lucy Hall
:14:42. > :14:45.who is a strong summer, the Leeds farmers in World Series, I think if
:14:46. > :14:53.she was there the swimming would be faster and it would not be a tightly
:14:54. > :14:57.bunched. This will be I think the fifth or sixth time that Zaferes, if
:14:58. > :15:03.she holds the lead, will be first out of the water any world triathlon
:15:04. > :15:07.series race. Swimming slightly quicker than expected, we expected
:15:08. > :15:11.something between 19 and 20 minutes but Zaferes getting it done in
:15:12. > :15:17.almost exactly 18, she is up and away and the chasers arrive en masse
:15:18. > :15:18.behind her, five seconds down. Zaferes on her way up towards
:15:19. > :15:30.transition. Of the world leader Flora Duffy also
:15:31. > :15:35.chasing her towards where the bikes are positioned. Joanna Brown of
:15:36. > :15:40.Canada is on her way up. They have to get transition right. We saw a
:15:41. > :15:47.problem for Zaferes in Edmonton. She has maintained a slight lead over
:15:48. > :15:53.the chasers. Zaferes will hope to get away and perhaps stay with Duffy
:15:54. > :15:59.in the early stages of the 40 kilometres bike. Into transition
:16:00. > :16:06.now. Transition is where you can sometimes see splits. The girls have
:16:07. > :16:10.possibly redlined to make the pack will find it harder to transition.
:16:11. > :16:16.They will be tired and could lose places. It is critical, transition.
:16:17. > :16:26.You need to be on the bike as quick and fresh as you can be. Duffy gets
:16:27. > :16:33.away. Katie Zaferes's lead has already been wiped out. Away they
:16:34. > :16:42.go, hoping to get involved with the front pack and we will hopefully see
:16:43. > :16:47.shortly how Zaferes deals with the feet and shoes on the bike in the
:16:48. > :16:52.early stages. The road surface has dried quickly in the August sunshine
:16:53. > :17:00.and now they sort themselves out and they are off and running on lap one.
:17:01. > :17:10.There are mixed reports on how tough the courses. Andrea Hewitt said it
:17:11. > :17:16.was tough and she struggled to ride her Boris bike up the hill. Other
:17:17. > :17:23.athletes have said it is not too bad. Zaferes has a couple of
:17:24. > :17:31.seconds' lead. And then the group that contains Flora Duffy. They are
:17:32. > :17:36.reasonably close. Do we expect a large group of maybe 25 to form
:17:37. > :17:41.quickly as they come passed in front of the beautiful City Hall? I think
:17:42. > :17:46.it will come together. You can see everyone capturing and bunching.
:17:47. > :17:54.Whether Flora decides to launch an attack. Knibb was just off the back
:17:55. > :18:00.but judging by last week's performance, I think we could see
:18:01. > :18:08.her make the group easily. Who is at the front? One of the Americans,
:18:09. > :18:11.again. I think it is Knibb, runner-up in Edmonton. A strong
:18:12. > :18:20.cyclist, the 19-year-old finished second behind Duffy in Edmonton
:18:21. > :18:25.seven days ago. The end of lap one, you know what has happened, I think
:18:26. > :18:30.the groups have come together. I think they have. This seems to be
:18:31. > :18:36.the front group. Knibb has helped the bridge up and it is a big group
:18:37. > :18:40.now. Duffy taking the wide turn and the group of nine expands
:18:41. > :18:47.significantly. We will get a list of who is in the lead group. Knibb,
:18:48. > :18:56.Kaspar, Joanna Brown from the host nation. Gillian Backhouse and
:18:57. > :19:06.Zaferes first out of the water. Gentle. Rachel Klamer. Strong
:19:07. > :19:12.swimmers like Carolina Routier also there. A total of 19 triathletes
:19:13. > :19:20.together at the front of the field. And then a gap around 30 seconds to
:19:21. > :19:27.the next group of six. This is where the race is being controlled. A huge
:19:28. > :19:31.group of 19 who have merged. The early breakaway lead group and the
:19:32. > :19:36.chase pack. That could be why Flora Duffy dropped back. She must've seen
:19:37. > :19:43.over her shoulder the chase group closing fast and knew there was no
:19:44. > :19:47.way to avoid it. That is true. Especially if she could see Knibb,
:19:48. > :19:52.now her training partner, that she was closing down. Maybe she was
:19:53. > :19:55.waiting for her. They might have an agreement to work together to
:19:56. > :19:58.control the race. It will be interesting to see if they have
:19:59. > :20:08.anything planned and they attack. The lead group has been whittled
:20:09. > :20:15.down from 19 to 13. Taylor Knibb was the runner-up in Edmonton. Duffy,
:20:16. > :20:27.the world leader. And then the Swiss. Annen. Strangely clear of the
:20:28. > :20:36.workload of the front. She seems to have been spending most of the bike
:20:37. > :20:41.in the middle of the pack. It is unusual for Flora, especially with
:20:42. > :20:46.recent form. Maybe she is holding back for an attack. You would have
:20:47. > :20:57.to be careful of watching what Flora is doing. At the end of the third
:20:58. > :21:02.lap, they do this sort of ride over the cobbles. Things get bumpy before
:21:03. > :21:06.they make the 180 turn and Flora Duffy has decided to make a move
:21:07. > :21:14.through the field. She wants to be one of the first to cross the line.
:21:15. > :21:22.The gap was 36 seconds the last time we had a check on the timing system.
:21:23. > :21:34.Duffy and Brown. Kaspar and Annen. Gentle the first of the Australians.
:21:35. > :21:40.That is the front group of 13. They are on their way. They could be sure
:21:41. > :21:45.with the chasing group heading in the opposite direction. As soon as
:21:46. > :21:50.Flora has hit the front through the technical section of transition, the
:21:51. > :21:55.group has stretched out. It was Katie Zaferes who lost the wheel was
:21:56. > :21:58.fighting her way back to the group. As soon as Flora has hit the front
:21:59. > :22:06.there has been an injection of pace and people are really hurting.
:22:07. > :22:12.I think Paula Findlay is leading the chase group. There are some really
:22:13. > :22:20.good cyclists in there. Losing time every lap. Significant time lost. It
:22:21. > :22:26.has gone from 36 seconds to 59 seconds. 36 seconds at the end of
:22:27. > :22:31.lap two and 59 seconds the gap between leaders and chasers at the
:22:32. > :22:36.conclusion of the third lap. The group of 13 at the front, whatever
:22:37. > :22:40.strategy is being employed and it looks like Flora Duffy is dictating
:22:41. > :22:48.terms, it is working, because their leaders strengthening lap on lap.
:22:49. > :22:53.Annen of Switzerland seems to be the next casualty. She is struggling on
:22:54. > :22:57.the climb. She started the race well but now has to watch as they go off
:22:58. > :23:01.into the distance. Does she have a technical problem? She is looking
:23:02. > :23:06.down and die and surprised to see her dropped from the group. Maybe
:23:07. > :23:12.she is having issues with gears. We have only had two different winners
:23:13. > :23:20.so far, Hewitt, one of the first -- she won the first two. Duffy the
:23:21. > :23:26.next four. Only three of this group have won race alongside them. Katie
:23:27. > :23:34.Zaferes has been on the top step of the podium. There is obviously more
:23:35. > :23:38.playing on this race than the actual race victory. Really starting to
:23:39. > :23:43.look at the series overall. These girls will be bearing that in mind.
:23:44. > :23:49.All that Flora needs to do is finish in the top 13 to maintain her lead
:23:50. > :23:53.in the series but Ashley Gentle, currently sitting in fourth, she
:23:54. > :24:00.could move up to the top of the rankings. Ashley is one of the
:24:01. > :24:06.strongest runners in her today. If she wins, she could put herself in
:24:07. > :24:16.strong contention for the overall series. As they prepare for the end
:24:17. > :24:22.of the final lap. How far out do you start thinking about your feet and
:24:23. > :24:26.shoes and preparation? It depends on the course. If there is a technical
:24:27. > :24:31.bit coming into transition, you often see athletes getting their
:24:32. > :24:35.feet out earlier, so they go into the technical section with their
:24:36. > :24:40.feet on top of their shoes, so they are not trying to negotiate corners
:24:41. > :24:44.whilst taking their feet out. If it is a long straight run into
:24:45. > :24:48.transition, people often do it last minute. Every athlete is different
:24:49. > :24:54.and I think some athletes sometimes forget to get them out! Approaching
:24:55. > :24:59.the second transition. This is where the serious part of this race
:25:00. > :25:04.begins. They need to be quick and clean and stay out of trouble on the
:25:05. > :25:12.arrival at transition. An unusual dismount to have to push the bikes
:25:13. > :25:17.around the 180 degrees turn before they get on the carpet. That is
:25:18. > :25:23.unique really, I have not seen that before. They arrive. The equipment
:25:24. > :25:29.has to be in the right place. That did not go to plan for Rachel
:25:30. > :25:33.Klamer. Flora Duffy is not the quickest in and out of transition
:25:34. > :25:39.and has too returned to her bike to make sure it is upright and that was
:25:40. > :25:46.not according to instructions for Flora Duffy. Not as neat and tidy as
:25:47. > :25:52.she would have liked. It is Yuko Takahashi first to strike followed
:25:53. > :25:57.by Kaspar and Hewitt and then the dangerous Ashleigh Gentle. And then
:25:58. > :26:03.the Canadian, Joanna Brown, and then Flora Duffy. You can see Taylor
:26:04. > :26:09.Knibb coming out of transition last. I think she might find the 10K run
:26:10. > :26:14.tough. She has had brilliant results as a junior over sprint distance,
:26:15. > :26:20.but she is not the fastest runner in the field and I think the 40 K bike
:26:21. > :26:25.might have taken a toll on her legs today and I would not expect her to
:26:26. > :26:33.fight for podium position today. Four laps of 2.5 kilometres in total
:26:34. > :26:38.to take them to the full distance of ten kilometres, using some of the
:26:39. > :26:43.same streets that were involved on the bike. It is a truncated loop.
:26:44. > :26:49.Past the feeding station and off they go. It looks like Ashleigh
:26:50. > :26:54.Gentle is taking it on at the front. That Hill was tough they just ran
:26:55. > :27:00.up. That is where a lot of girls were dropped on the bike. To run up
:27:01. > :27:05.is a different story again, that is tougher to negotiate it. You do not
:27:06. > :27:10.see many hilly courses World Series races. The run is often flat.
:27:11. > :27:14.Stockholm has a hill, but most of the others are a flat run and I
:27:15. > :27:20.think that will change the outcome of the race. It will suit stronger
:27:21. > :27:27.athletes. Leeds is a tough run course which suits the stronger
:27:28. > :27:33.runners. 26-year-old Ashleigh Gentle from Australia looking to strike
:27:34. > :27:37.early in the first lap of the run. Second place, just behind her, Flora
:27:38. > :27:43.Duffy, who had I her standards not the best transition, and she has
:27:44. > :27:49.made up for it and is trying to get on the shoulder of the Australian.
:27:50. > :28:01.From Brisbane, Australia, Ashleigh Gentle leads the world triathlon
:28:02. > :28:06.series in Montreal. About four, yes, four seconds confirmed by the
:28:07. > :28:15.graphic, the distance between Gentle and then Duffy, Kaspar and Hewitt,
:28:16. > :28:19.who are joint second right now. Ashleigh did not race in Edmonton
:28:20. > :28:26.last weekend and I think that will pay off. She will be fresher than a
:28:27. > :28:30.lot of the other athletes who raced, including Flora Duffy, Katie
:28:31. > :28:34.Zaferes, Kaspar, Rachel Klamer. A lot of the front group raced in
:28:35. > :28:47.Edmonton and Ashleigh didn't. She is striding away right now. Flora Duffy
:28:48. > :28:55.moving clear. From Hewitt and Kaspar. Hewitt recovered a bit of
:28:56. > :29:01.ground. She got on the shoulder of Duffy and then Duffy made a surge
:29:02. > :29:06.forward. Now, is Hewitt responding? It looks like good work from the New
:29:07. > :29:10.Zealander. A tough part of the course. This is where they were out
:29:11. > :29:15.of their saddles and pushing hard on their bikes, and now running uphill.
:29:16. > :29:22.I think this hell will play a big part today. I think it -- this hill
:29:23. > :29:31.will play a part and it is where you will see splits happening. 31 world
:29:32. > :29:37.triathlon series starts for Ashleigh Gentle and five podium places. Will
:29:38. > :29:43.today be the day when she finally gets her first victory? She is
:29:44. > :29:49.halfway through the run stage, almost, after one hour and 40
:29:50. > :29:56.minutes and 50 seconds. Flora Duffy in second position with four wins
:29:57. > :30:03.this season. Hewitt in third with two Wins this season. A little
:30:04. > :30:04.further behind, Kersten Kasper. She has had a consistent campaign so
:30:05. > :30:16.far. Ashleigh Gentle makes the turn and
:30:17. > :30:24.will see the two signal buying she has two laps left to run. It's
:30:25. > :30:39.difficult to tell if ground is being made back-up on Flora No danger of
:30:40. > :30:44.missing the count like Jacob Birtwhistle did last time out, a
:30:45. > :30:53.huge sign saying two laps to go. Andrea Hewitt is not out of silver
:30:54. > :31:04.medal position here. Flora Duffy 21 seconds behind, Andrea Hewitt a
:31:05. > :31:08.further nine seconds back. It looks really windy out there today which
:31:09. > :31:13.is making life even more difficult on this tough running course, Flora
:31:14. > :31:19.looks like she usually pushing and working hard winners Andrea looks
:31:20. > :31:24.quite comfortable so we could see that coming down. This will be a new
:31:25. > :31:28.experience for Ashleigh she is normally coming from further down
:31:29. > :31:33.the field when she gets off the bike and is having to run her way through
:31:34. > :31:36.athletes, to lead from the outset is a different experience and it's a
:31:37. > :31:41.learning curve and it will give her a lot of confidence going forward
:31:42. > :31:45.that she knows what to do in the situation. It's fantastic to see her
:31:46. > :31:52.leading from the start of a run rather than having to chase her way
:31:53. > :31:59.up. That winning margin just over a lap to go, the advantage Ashleigh
:32:00. > :32:08.Gentle has opened up over Flora Duffy is a massive 37 seconds. That
:32:09. > :32:16.is quite dominant running, it's really quite impressive. Further
:32:17. > :32:22.down the road you can see a potential battle shaping up for
:32:23. > :32:26.fourth place between Kirsten Kasper who is of Canadian Heritage bid
:32:27. > :32:34.races for the United States, and Joanna Brown, who is racing in the
:32:35. > :32:37.red of Canada. I impressed have you been with this performance from
:32:38. > :32:44.Ashleigh Gentle in terms of timing and tactics and determination?
:32:45. > :32:49.Incredibly impressed, I was really impressed with her swimming,
:32:50. > :32:54.Ashleigh Gentle is not known for her strong swimming, she is often quite
:32:55. > :32:59.far down. But she had a brilliant swim, got herself into the front
:33:00. > :33:03.group, and worked hard on the bike, did not shy away, did not hide away.
:33:04. > :33:08.She's gone out into the run and dominated from the start. Showing
:33:09. > :33:14.what pure class she is and I really am impressed. She has done it from
:33:15. > :33:23.the front and an impressive way to win race. Good swim and two very
:33:24. > :33:29.tidy transitions for the Australian. With about a hundred metres to go
:33:30. > :33:33.she knows that Duffy is far enough removed, she glanced over her
:33:34. > :33:37.shoulder to double check but now can potentially start enjoying the last
:33:38. > :33:46.few moments of this triathlon which will be her first as champion. Lots
:33:47. > :33:54.of warm applause for Ashleigh Gentle. She is double and triple
:33:55. > :34:02.checking that Duffy is not coming for a late surge, taking off the
:34:03. > :34:06.sunglasses and enjoying the moment now. I don't think she can quite
:34:07. > :34:11.believe it, she keeps checking back to see if Flora is coming but she's
:34:12. > :34:16.obviously got this and needs to enjoy the moment. She wins in
:34:17. > :34:21.Montreal, that delay for Ashleigh Gentle for the first time in her
:34:22. > :34:26.career! She will stand on the top step of the world triathlon series
:34:27. > :34:34.podium, one hour 59 minutes and four seconds for a winning time. Duffy,
:34:35. > :34:41.the defending world champion will come home the second, four straight
:34:42. > :34:44.victories and the runners-up spot for Flora Duffy, her astonishing
:34:45. > :34:53.seasons continues. And another podium place for the unstoppable
:34:54. > :35:02.Andrea Hewitt, the oldest competitor in the contest today will be on the
:35:03. > :35:07.podium, finishing third, after two victories at the start of the season
:35:08. > :35:12.she is back on the podium. Ashleigh Gentle very emotional and I am not
:35:13. > :35:18.surprised to see that, I thought she would be, it means a lot to her,
:35:19. > :35:24.it's been a long time coming. And fourth place will go to the
:35:25. > :35:30.Canadian, a battle unfolding further down the track, it's been won by
:35:31. > :35:35.Joanna Brown. She has taken fourth place, stolen it from Kirsten
:35:36. > :35:41.Kasper, the Canadian finishes fourth, Joanna Brown in the top
:35:42. > :35:44.five, Kirsten Kasper with a huge hug for her training partner, they had a
:35:45. > :35:49.ding-dong battle at the conclusion of the
:35:50. > :35:58.five second-place finishes, how sweet to finally win one? I am
:35:59. > :36:01.sorry. It is OK, I know it is emotional. To be honest I've flew
:36:02. > :36:07.into Montreal and got pretty sick and only decided to race this
:36:08. > :36:14.morning. But it paid off. I have to thank my coach Jamie Turner, he
:36:15. > :36:17.installed some things in my mind going into this race to focus on
:36:18. > :36:24.little things, doing them right rather than the result and drew a
:36:25. > :36:30.lot of inspiration from Gwen as well so I have those people to thank, I
:36:31. > :36:35.am in shock, it has taken six years and a lot of ups and downs, five
:36:36. > :36:43.second-place ease and finally I win, I am so happy. I am very happy with
:36:44. > :36:48.second today, it was a tough race out there, not quite feeling the
:36:49. > :36:52.same on the bike, but worked what I had and it was going to come down
:36:53. > :37:01.for a running race, I was hoping for more I did the best I could and I
:37:02. > :37:06.happy for Ashleigh I knew it would come Sunday so I am glad it is
:37:07. > :37:12.today. How do you see the race for the World Championship now, one race
:37:13. > :37:17.left and then the grand final? Flora is still deciding if she will come
:37:18. > :37:21.to Stockholm but it's going to down to Rotterdam because you get one and
:37:22. > :38:01.a half times the points so it's close and exciting.
:38:02. > :38:10.Unmade invective for Ashleigh Gentle from Australia after so many near
:38:11. > :38:16.misses, a handful of podium places, she finally got the one she wanted.
:38:17. > :38:23.Victory in Montreal and you could tell in her postrace interview how
:38:24. > :38:29.much it meant to her. STUDIO: What a race and so deserved, waited so long
:38:30. > :38:33.for this day, you must be pleased? Definitely, it's been a long time
:38:34. > :38:37.coming and you could see how much it meant, I think it was the 32nd time
:38:38. > :38:41.she had started a race so to finally get the victory is fantastic. She is
:38:42. > :38:45.an exciting talent, she's been a good runner but always a bit down on
:38:46. > :38:51.the swimming so for her to step up and get the gold is amazing. Her
:38:52. > :38:56.swimming was impressive, we are used to seeing how come out about a
:38:57. > :38:59.minute down and this time it was only 20 seconds, so with improved
:39:00. > :39:06.swimming she can be a real threat to Flora Duffy. Definitely, she can be
:39:07. > :39:12.a threat to everybody and when Gwen comes back she can be a threat to
:39:13. > :39:15.her as well, she is coached by Jamie Turner who also coaches Gwen
:39:16. > :39:22.Jorgensen so maybe this is why we are seeing these big improvements?
:39:23. > :39:25.Talking about Flora Duffy, it was an interesting day, not the Flora Duffy
:39:26. > :39:31.we've seen in the last few races, to see her sitting on the bike and not
:39:32. > :39:35.do any work is out of character. Definitely, she did allude to the
:39:36. > :39:39.fact she was not feeling herself, and if you can still get silver when
:39:40. > :39:43.you are feeling a bit off that is really impressive. She still had a
:39:44. > :39:47.very good race, we were expecting her to break off the front and I
:39:48. > :39:50.think a lot of the girls in the group were expecting that as well.
:39:51. > :39:54.Over the last lap especially everyone was sitting up and waiting
:39:55. > :40:00.for her to do something but it never materialised. I think that's good
:40:01. > :40:04.for the series going forward, I think it will give the girls more
:40:05. > :40:08.confidence they can ride with Flora, even if she was a bit tired it shows
:40:09. > :40:14.she can be vulnerable and hopefully going forward she would have the
:40:15. > :40:18.fear factor we talked about. But she has made an improvement on her run,
:40:19. > :40:25.finishing 20 seconds down on Ashleigh Gentle is impressive. It
:40:26. > :40:33.is, Flora has been working on her running in the past 12-18 months.
:40:34. > :40:35.She was faster than Gwen which is really impressive, they think of
:40:36. > :40:40.Flora is a fantastic swimmer and biker but she's also one of the
:40:41. > :40:44.fastest runners in the field now as well. Looking ahead to the
:40:45. > :40:47.Commonwealth Games gold course what was interesting about the results,
:40:48. > :40:52.the top four athletes from the Commonwealth. Impressive to see so
:40:53. > :40:58.many Commonwealth athletes up there, there are normally some Americans
:40:59. > :41:01.breaking it up. It's going to be exciting especially as it's a
:41:02. > :41:06.shorter distance of the sprint and it will give us Brits something to
:41:07. > :41:08.think about. Absolutely, but before that we have this to look forward
:41:09. > :41:52.to. COMMENTATOR: Steve Crowley taking
:41:53. > :42:20.gold in his first race for Great Britain.
:42:21. > :42:26.Next up for the British team is the world parrot triathlon Championships
:42:27. > :42:30.taking place in Rotterdam on Friday 15th September.
:42:31. > :42:35.We will be sure to keep you updated on their progress at the World
:42:36. > :42:40.Championships, somebody however who we will not be seen in Rotterdam or
:42:41. > :42:44.anywhere else this season is Alistair Brownlee. The double
:42:45. > :42:48.Olympic champion had hip surgery on Saturday after suffering an acute
:42:49. > :42:52.flare-up of a long-standing problem in training. The Sergei victory
:42:53. > :42:57.points to an end his main aim for the season which was to win the
:42:58. > :43:00.world half Ironman title but in doing so he says he hopes it will
:43:01. > :43:04.enable him to continue doing what he loves for many years to come. It
:43:05. > :43:10.seems as though these problems have come from him moving up distance. It
:43:11. > :43:13.is difficult when you change events and go longer in triathlon, a lot of
:43:14. > :43:17.things come into play, you have to change training and one of the key
:43:18. > :43:21.things is you are now on it time trial bike so your position changes
:43:22. > :43:25.massively and that can have biomechanical effect on everything
:43:26. > :43:29.from your cycling to your running. I think that is where we are seeing
:43:30. > :43:36.Alistair have problems. I think after he has the operation he will
:43:37. > :43:40.be firing on all solders. In the meantime Jonny Brownlee seem to be
:43:41. > :43:44.over his problems when he returned to racing last week in Edmonton and
:43:45. > :43:51.finished fourth, this is what he has said since. Jonathan Brownlee comes
:43:52. > :43:59.home with fourth position. Please to be back on the start line and back
:44:00. > :44:03.racing but I don't go... I thought I was fit, I had had the illness
:44:04. > :44:07.before but I thought I was fitter than that so I came out the race
:44:08. > :44:12.disappointed and wanted more. It was a strange race, Mario and Richard
:44:13. > :44:16.having good swims and it meant we did not have any engines on the bike
:44:17. > :44:19.and lacking Alistair it meant we didn't have a breakaway and I was
:44:20. > :44:23.disappointed with that because I thought seeing the course there
:44:24. > :44:27.would definitely be a breakaway. Hopefully having a sprint distance
:44:28. > :44:32.race will improve and hopefully I have recovered well between the
:44:33. > :44:37.races as that is a big factor, it's unusual to race two weekends in a
:44:38. > :44:40.row. I would like to think I do as much training as everyone else and
:44:41. > :44:45.recover as well as everyone else so hopefully I will be in better form.
:44:46. > :44:48.The courses in the centre of Montreal, the swim is interesting,
:44:49. > :44:53.it's good for swimmers because it is longer straights and one and a half
:44:54. > :44:57.laps means less corners which should help the breakaway. The bikes taken
:44:58. > :45:02.some nice sites of Montreal and quite few hills, then the run goes
:45:03. > :45:05.over a little bit hill and if we get motivated a group we can hopefully
:45:06. > :45:09.get a breakaway and I can have a good race. It was not a bad race
:45:10. > :45:16.from Johnny but it was not him at his best.
:45:17. > :45:26.It wasn't his best but fourth is a solid results. Mario Mola has been
:45:27. > :45:32.impressive all-round. He has dominated. Absolutely. Mola is an
:45:33. > :45:36.all-round triathlete. Yes, he does not always get the swim right but we
:45:37. > :45:40.are seeing that improving and he is more consistent than he has been in
:45:41. > :45:46.his swim, which is worrying for the rest of the field. The last four
:45:47. > :45:51.races and wins have put him in pole position. Let's take a look at the
:45:52. > :46:00.rankings. Mola has opened up a sizeable lead. Tom Bishop was fourth
:46:01. > :46:03.going into Edmonton but he has chosen altitude training over
:46:04. > :46:10.competing in Canada. Missing those races means he slips to seven. He
:46:11. > :46:14.will be back racing in Stockholm. Jonny Brownlee's fourth in Edmonton
:46:15. > :46:20.was enough to get him into the top ten and he will hope to climb a
:46:21. > :46:25.couple of places after this race. Non Stanford has been looking at who
:46:26. > :46:29.else is in action. This is her guide. Gomez will be relieved to be
:46:30. > :46:34.back racing on a course that plays to his strengths. The Spaniard going
:46:35. > :46:38.about his business over the sprint in Hamburg and Edmonton finishing
:46:39. > :46:43.fifth and six. Over Olympic distance the five-time world champion will be
:46:44. > :46:47.keen to show he has still got what he takes. Richard Murray has
:46:48. > :46:54.experimented with longer distance triathlon is this year which might
:46:55. > :46:56.be why he has not had the speed to challenge in Edmonton. A good swim
:46:57. > :47:01.in Montreal and he might push further up the podium. After
:47:02. > :47:06.launching his sprint finish to early in Edmonton, Jacob Birtwistle will
:47:07. > :47:11.be counting carefully this time. He has proven himself at sprint level
:47:12. > :47:19.becoming part of Mola's spring group. Ryan Sissons is a late
:47:20. > :47:24.Bloomer, making his first World Series podium at the age of 29 in
:47:25. > :47:29.Hamburg. He was speaking to show that is no fluke with a strong
:47:30. > :47:34.showing in Montreal. Keep an eye out for Raphael Montoya, who beat Jacob
:47:35. > :47:40.Birtwistle to be junior champion in 2014 and his results at elite level
:47:41. > :47:43.have improved, winning silver at the European Championships and he had a
:47:44. > :47:50.World Series best fifth-place finish in Edmonton. Having seen the women's
:47:51. > :47:56.race, what will be key in the men's race? I see the men's race unfolding
:47:57. > :48:02.differently. The women's swing did not break up but with the lights of
:48:03. > :48:06.Richard Varga, the men's race might string out more. The bikes are
:48:07. > :48:10.interesting with the boys more aggressive and it means a chance of
:48:11. > :48:15.the front pack not getting caught as in the women's race. The run course
:48:16. > :48:22.is tough. You saw how tired the women were and it will favour the
:48:23. > :48:27.likes of Mario Mola. Gomez is racing this weekend. A fantastic race in
:48:28. > :48:33.Abu Dhabi, which he won and now racing over sprint distance in the
:48:34. > :48:36.last races. He does not like the sprint distance race so I am
:48:37. > :48:41.interested to see how he impacts on the race this weekend. Javier
:48:42. > :48:45.traditionally performs better over Olympic distance and it depends on
:48:46. > :48:49.where he comes out in the swim, if he is in the front group, good
:48:50. > :48:54.engine to keep the bike away. If he comes out in the second group, there
:48:55. > :48:59.is a good engine driving them back up to the front group. Where he
:49:00. > :49:05.comes out will affect the outcome. We can chat about the British
:49:06. > :49:12.athletes. Jonny Brownlee is racing. Grant Sheldon and Gordon Benson,
:49:13. > :49:17.Grant was disappointed with Edmonton but it was a solid results for an
:49:18. > :49:22.athlete that has had injury problems. Also a tougher field this
:49:23. > :49:26.year. I do not think he will be disappointed with ten. He had a
:49:27. > :49:32.brilliant performance in Edmonton. Grant had a shocker and got lapped
:49:33. > :49:36.out in Leeds and to come back from that disappointment and finished
:49:37. > :49:42.tenth is fantastic. Gordon Benson, will the course suit him? It will in
:49:43. > :49:47.part. He is a powerful athlete and a long climate Edmonton but not favour
:49:48. > :49:52.him. The climbs here are sharper and shorter so he will cope better. His
:49:53. > :49:56.powerful nature will count against him and he might struggle on the run
:49:57. > :50:00.but I would not be surprised to see him there at the end of the bike. We
:50:01. > :50:04.can hand you over to Matt Chilton and eventually Non Stanford. This is
:50:05. > :50:21.the starting list. Jacob Birtwistle had a
:50:22. > :50:27.miscalculation of laps last weekend in Edmonton but he could be due a
:50:28. > :50:35.win. Blummenfelt won the World Cup here one year ago. The British
:50:36. > :50:42.triathletes, the other two, Gordon Benson with 25 and Grant Sheldon
:50:43. > :50:49.with 27. Montreal in Canada, it is hosting round seven of the 2017
:50:50. > :50:55.world triathlon series. And away they go. Spectacular start. Cheering
:50:56. > :51:01.from the several hundred spectators who have gathered port side to watch
:51:02. > :51:06.the start of the race and already one or two being pushed out of
:51:07. > :51:12.position as the fast starters force their way to the front. On the left
:51:13. > :51:15.of the line, you can see a clear figure in front, Richard Varga. He
:51:16. > :51:23.started alongside Jonny Brownlee and Mario Mola. The left-hand side as we
:51:24. > :51:32.look down. And that is the familiar swim specialist stroke of Richard
:51:33. > :51:36.Varga. A fine start. It looks like Jonny Brownlee got straight on
:51:37. > :51:43.Richard Varga's feet, moving across as they dived in and hopefully he
:51:44. > :51:49.will hope to those feet to the first buoy. Mario Mola, whether he can
:51:50. > :51:56.hold that, we will have to wait and see. Richard is stretching it out
:51:57. > :52:02.already and you can see the right-hand side, I think he has a
:52:03. > :52:07.massive advantage on the left side of the party. I'm sure that is
:52:08. > :52:13.Jonathan Brownlee in second. He is starting to lose Richard's feet.
:52:14. > :52:21.Richard has obviously got the pace. Notables who went left on the
:52:22. > :52:27.pontoon included Gomez. Javier Gomez, Birtwistle, strong athletes.
:52:28. > :52:31.They want to get rid of them in the swim. It will be significant where
:52:32. > :52:37.Javier Gomez comes out and if he comes out in the front group he is a
:52:38. > :52:43.fantastic engine to help chase and if he comes out the chase group, he
:52:44. > :52:48.could help drive the chase group to the front. For Jonny Brownlee it is
:52:49. > :52:56.important where Javier comes out is the swim. I think Jonny Brownlee has
:52:57. > :52:59.taken the lead from Richard Varga. I am not sure if they have an
:53:00. > :53:04.agreement to lead to different portions of the race so that Richard
:53:05. > :53:08.does not have the responsibility of leading it all, to give him a break
:53:09. > :53:14.so hopefully he can push on in the latter stages and force it even
:53:15. > :53:19.more. They might have thought about it and has strategy going in. Jonny
:53:20. > :53:24.Brownlee said after his race in Edmonton last weekend when he
:53:25. > :53:28.finished fourth, he said, I have lacked race fitness and sharpness.
:53:29. > :53:33.You cannot train that, you need to be in a race. Hopefully having a
:53:34. > :53:39.sprint race under my belt will move things on and I have recovered well.
:53:40. > :53:44.He said it was unusual to have two races on successive weekends and
:53:45. > :53:49.hopes his recovery will have gone well, as he allows Richard Varga to
:53:50. > :53:53.come back in contention. They chopping and changing of the lead.
:53:54. > :53:57.Jonny Brownlee leading briefly and then Richard Varga had a burst of
:53:58. > :54:05.acceleration, moving back into first position. The end of lap one and,
:54:06. > :54:10.for the 31st time in his career and Richard Varga the first man out of
:54:11. > :54:16.the water in this competition. In he goes. With his former training
:54:17. > :54:29.partner Jonny Brownlee just behind. Then Ben Kanute. Aaron Royale in
:54:30. > :54:35.good shape. Pierre le Coq. Dominic Onyx has gone well. Gomez in 12th.
:54:36. > :54:40.Still no sign of some of the leading contenders and no sign of the other
:54:41. > :54:48.two British triathletes, Benson and Sheldon. There is Benson coming out
:54:49. > :54:55.of the water, 28 seconds down after the first lap of the swim. Not
:54:56. > :55:00.surprised to see a lot of French athletes up there today. They are
:55:01. > :55:09.notoriously good swimmers. Mola was down. Trailing after the first lap
:55:10. > :55:13.by 36 seconds. A huge chunk. I think I saw Grant Sheldon getting in
:55:14. > :55:15.towards the back so I think he is off the pace. But no massive brakes
:55:16. > :55:29.yet. -- breaks. Interesting to see if
:55:30. > :55:39.they can force a split so when they get on the bikes they can form a
:55:40. > :55:44.group to work together. You can see that the split has happened and
:55:45. > :55:50.there will be some trailing in backpack, which we know includes
:55:51. > :55:53.Mario Mola, so great news for Jonny Brownlee from that perspective.
:55:54. > :56:00.Mario Mola is a very strong runner who has posted fast ten case splits
:56:01. > :56:06.in recent years. If Jonny Brownlee can distance himself from Mario,
:56:07. > :56:13.that is the best case scenario. The end of the swim. Richard Varga
:56:14. > :56:18.leading them out. He is first to climb the steps. The Slovakian swim
:56:19. > :56:22.specialist doing what he does best, closely followed by Brownlee and Ben
:56:23. > :56:33.Kanute. And then one of the Australians, it is Aaron Royale in
:56:34. > :56:37.good shape. And then Seth Rider. Three Frenchmen tightly bunched.
:56:38. > :56:45.Then a couple of Japanese and then Gomez, 16 seconds down. He is in
:56:46. > :56:54.company with Blummenfelt and Jonas Schomburg. There we get the first
:56:55. > :56:59.look at Gordon Benson, who comes out 31 seconds behind the leaders. The
:57:00. > :57:06.leaders are now on their way towards their bikes. A real chance to make a
:57:07. > :57:11.difference coming out of transition here. You have strong cyclists. Ben
:57:12. > :57:16.Kanute flew out of transition in the mixed relay but seems to have
:57:17. > :57:23.trouble with his helmet. If he attacks, they could cause a split.
:57:24. > :57:29.Royale is on board and away and Gomez not far behind. Gomez hoping
:57:30. > :57:31.to close the gap up towards Jonny Brownlee and Richard Varga. Kristian
:57:32. > :57:38.Blummenfelt in the saddle and riding. One of the Portuguese, he
:57:39. > :57:49.overshot his mark and had to go back. On his way now. Another one of
:57:50. > :57:53.the British athletes coming out. That was Gordon Benson. Vincente
:57:54. > :57:57.Hernandez is in the top ten of the standings but he has left himself
:57:58. > :58:02.work to do to reach the gap towards the leaders, but not as much work as
:58:03. > :58:07.the world number one, defending world champion. Mario Mola is late
:58:08. > :58:11.into transition and will hope to find a good working party on the
:58:12. > :58:17.bike and try to close the gap towards the leaders. They are well
:58:18. > :58:22.strung out and Brownlee and Richard Varga and others will be deep into
:58:23. > :58:26.lap one before this group leave transition. Ryan Sissons just coming
:58:27. > :58:34.through, he was third in Hamburg. He is way down. Just in front of Mario
:58:35. > :58:40.Mola. The first lap of the bike under way. Already a lot of intrigue
:58:41. > :58:45.unfolding. We will join the leaders. Jonathan Brownlee with Richard Varga
:58:46. > :58:50.just behind and Aaron Royale of Australia in third. His triathlon is
:58:51. > :58:54.working out well so far. I think that is Ben Kanute trying to close
:58:55. > :59:01.the gap and make it a quartet in front. If they attack the first lap
:59:02. > :59:06.of the bike and cause this split, you can see the split happening
:59:07. > :59:11.already, that would be great. They have Gomez, who was not far behind,
:59:12. > :59:13.I think he came out of the swim 16 seconds down but he left transition
:59:14. > :59:15.closer to them. from Johnny but it was not him at
:59:16. > :59:26.his best. I really think Jonny is pushing the
:59:27. > :59:30.pace, you can see him shouting at the others in the group and he will
:59:31. > :59:34.want them to work together. He will not want to lose these athletes as
:59:35. > :59:39.they will work harder and better as a quartet rather than him on his
:59:40. > :59:44.own. If you can organise and motivate them it's the ideal
:59:45. > :59:49.scenario for him. Now the conclusion of the first lap, we will get an
:59:50. > :59:53.accurate timing as to what the gap is between the leading four and the
:59:54. > :00:01.chasing pack who are on the same stretch of road, I think there are
:00:02. > :00:07.three of them together, I think one of them is Javier Gomez but we will
:00:08. > :00:10.find out shortly, certainly one of the it's bangers. It is Javier
:00:11. > :00:16.Gomez, Kristian Blummenfelt but I did not quite pick up to the third
:00:17. > :00:22.athlete was. We will find out, the gap is limited, it is Javier Gomez,
:00:23. > :00:30.Kristian Blummenfelt and Seth Rider, we do not know much about him,
:00:31. > :00:36.number 50, I think this might be one of his first ever world triathlon
:00:37. > :00:40.series races. Those three have broken away from the main chasing
:00:41. > :00:44.pack and that is good they have not dragged everyone up with them and
:00:45. > :00:49.even if those pre-managed to join the front four which I think they
:00:50. > :00:53.very well might do it might work to their advantage that there are now
:00:54. > :00:58.seven of them able to share the workload. Seth Rider is 21 years
:00:59. > :01:06.old, today is his world triathlon series debut and could soon be
:01:07. > :01:07.joining the lead group as the chasing pack come through. Some
:01:08. > :01:21.familiar names here. I think Mario Mola was within that
:01:22. > :01:24.group as well. Tony Dodds is normally a front pack swimmer,
:01:25. > :01:29.Russell white you often see at the front of swimming and biking as
:01:30. > :01:33.well, so maybe the swimming was a bit more aggressive than you can
:01:34. > :01:36.actually see and its pricing to see some of those names back there in
:01:37. > :01:43.that third and fourth pack effectively. I think this is the
:01:44. > :01:46.chase group because it has some of the French athletes who were near
:01:47. > :01:58.the front of the swimming but have just missed out on getting the
:01:59. > :02:11.breakaway. We had three French. Rafael Toloi finished fifth last
:02:12. > :02:21.This is the lead group, numbers have grown. Jonny Brownlee, Aaron Royle,
:02:22. > :02:31.they were with Richard Varga but that four has now become seven. They
:02:32. > :02:35.have got some really strong riders, Kristian Blummenfelt is incredibly
:02:36. > :02:41.powerful. He will really contribute to this breakaway, Javier Gomez
:02:42. > :02:45.again, massive engine. He will be an asset to this front group and like
:02:46. > :02:50.we said before, they could really change the outcome and I think it's
:02:51. > :02:58.better for Jonny that he is there in terms of keeping Mario Mola at bay.
:02:59. > :03:10.The leading seven right now. I am struggling to see how this
:03:11. > :03:15.group is going to be caught, they are really strong riders, very
:03:16. > :03:19.experienced. I think this could be a breakaway which sticks the full 40
:03:20. > :03:24.kilometres today. Jonny Brownlee back at the front. Conditions get
:03:25. > :03:31.slightly more lumpy underfoot as they get to the cobbles. But it is
:03:32. > :03:36.dry. A bit of dampness around for the women's race but today it's all
:03:37. > :03:43.dry under the wheels, the Olympics over medallist Jonathan Brownlee of
:03:44. > :03:51.Great Britain is charging here. -- the Olympic silver-medallist. Plenty
:03:52. > :03:54.of other riders for company, including the Norwegian Kristian
:03:55. > :04:02.Blummenfelt who tasted success here a year ago. We will get an official
:04:03. > :04:04.time difference between the leaders and the chasers now, Javier Gomez in
:04:05. > :04:27.there as well. I think the chasing pack was being
:04:28. > :04:31.joined by the third pack so the group is swelling but I feel the
:04:32. > :04:36.margin has definitely gone up, it was 31 seconds at the end of the
:04:37. > :04:42.first lap and I think it's growing. I think that will keep growing, need
:04:43. > :04:48.to just keep chipping away. It's going to be closer to 45 seconds by
:04:49. > :04:57.the time they crossed the line. 44 seconds. 44 seconds between the
:04:58. > :05:04.leading seven and the next group of about 30. Having such a sizeable
:05:05. > :05:09.chasing pack is not necessarily a great thing if you're trying to
:05:10. > :05:15.close down. Often more bodies mean it's more difficult to get round
:05:16. > :05:19.tight corners and hills mean the pack stretches out and this will
:05:20. > :05:25.play into the hands of the front group who will work well together.
:05:26. > :05:33.Javier Gomez taking it up, one of three men in the group who have gone
:05:34. > :05:40.sub 30 minutes over 10,000 metres and remember this race today will
:05:41. > :05:46.conclude with a 10K run. Gomez has run 29.02, Jonathan Brownlee 29.11.
:05:47. > :05:52.The quality of running within this group of seven is exceptional. The
:05:53. > :05:58.group of seven have established themselves with a gap now getting on
:05:59. > :06:02.for a minute. In terms of distance you can get it illustrated by that
:06:03. > :06:07.camera shot from a helicopter. They are in different parts of Montreal,
:06:08. > :06:15.the leading group of seven and the chasers. Different suburbs right
:06:16. > :06:22.now. How well potentially could Mario Mola do today? What is the
:06:23. > :06:26.best case scenario for him the way things stand? Looking at the front
:06:27. > :06:33.group I think he would do incredibly well, even if the time gap stays 62
:06:34. > :06:38.seconds he would do incredibly well to run himself up. Javier Gomez,
:06:39. > :06:42.Jonny Brownlee, Kristian Blummenfelt has had some really strong runs in
:06:43. > :06:49.the past. Aaron Royle has run himself onto the podium before as
:06:50. > :06:52.well. I think it would be very impressive if Mario Mola did that
:06:53. > :06:56.but I don't think he has to score today in order to stay at the top of
:06:57. > :07:00.the rankings. His result today does not necessarily matter in the
:07:01. > :07:07.overall standings but I think he will still want to do well and
:07:08. > :07:15.maintain his fairly perfect record. What a season it has been, winner on
:07:16. > :07:19.the Gold Coast over sprint distance, Yokohama Olympic distance, won again
:07:20. > :07:25.in Hamburg, and last weekend in Edmonton over the sprint distance,
:07:26. > :07:30.but he is out of contention here the way things stand. Once again we join
:07:31. > :07:34.the lead group, Seth Rider has stayed fixed to the back of this
:07:35. > :07:41.group and no Jonny Brownlee goes to work, easing his way back, giving
:07:42. > :07:47.out his instructions. In conversation with Seth Rider at the
:07:48. > :07:50.back and the other American Ben Kanute, Jonny Brownlee takes his
:07:51. > :08:00.place at the back of the group, had a quiet ride with Seth Rider. It'll
:08:01. > :08:06.be interesting to know what gets exchanged, think sometimes it can be
:08:07. > :08:11.encouraging but other times it can be frustrating with people not
:08:12. > :08:17.contributing. But I'd be surprised if they do not actually mind if Seth
:08:18. > :08:20.Rider stays towards the back being as he is relatively experienced and
:08:21. > :08:23.probably an unknown entity to the rest of these athletes as well so
:08:24. > :08:29.they might rather he stays towards the back and out of trouble and they
:08:30. > :08:35.can allow the work to continue smoothly upfront.
:08:36. > :08:45.Mario Mola is now putting an an obvious effort here, he has broken
:08:46. > :08:50.away, he had Hernandez for company but has decided enough is enough, if
:08:51. > :08:54.he's going to feature in the top places today he's got to try and get
:08:55. > :09:02.little closer to the front of seven so Mario Mola has made a move. It
:09:03. > :09:08.would be great to see somebody from the second pack having a go at
:09:09. > :09:12.breaking away from the large pack and making inroads into this front
:09:13. > :09:18.pack, it would show some bravery for sure. Keep things exciting otherwise
:09:19. > :09:26.it will just roll around and accept fate in some regards.
:09:27. > :09:37.180 turn up towards the timing line. The front group of seven remains the
:09:38. > :09:46.same with three laps to go, this sign held clearly for everyone to
:09:47. > :09:52.see and no change. The last time they crossed the line the advantage
:09:53. > :10:00.was 62 seconds. We will wait and see if Mario Mola has managed to change
:10:01. > :10:03.that in his favour at all. He has gone back into the pack outflanked.
:10:04. > :10:12.-- I think. At the end of this one they will
:10:13. > :10:18.take the bell and then things will start to develop over the last lap
:10:19. > :10:22.of four and a half kilometres. Seems to be a bit of a break, one athlete
:10:23. > :10:27.of the front followed by another three and then the rest of the
:10:28. > :10:32.chasing pack so you cannot quite work out from here who it is but
:10:33. > :10:36.definitely a Spaniard in a red suit, I wonder if that's Mario Mola?
:10:37. > :10:49.Trying to make a move. Danish athlete. Andreas Schelling from
:10:50. > :11:00.Denmark, 26 years old. He's gone away. Taken about seven seconds out
:11:01. > :11:05.of the rest of the group, obviously feels if he is to have a chance of
:11:06. > :11:14.getting up towards the top five finish to make make a break now. We
:11:15. > :11:19.would expect the three podium places, the three medals to come
:11:20. > :11:27.from within this group of seven who are about to conclude they 40 K ride
:11:28. > :11:35.around the streets of Montreal. It's been fascinating, six experienced
:11:36. > :11:39.riders, six established Rider and 120-year-old who has been along for
:11:40. > :11:46.the ride and what RIT has had, Seth Rider.
:11:47. > :11:56.Little stumble for Seth Rider as she grabs hold of the seat of his bike
:11:57. > :12:01.and made his way towards transition, they have to get off their bikes and
:12:02. > :12:06.then push them in the 180 degrees turn before they come to their
:12:07. > :12:10.positions within tea too. Let's see how Jonny Brownlee goes, quite have
:12:11. > :12:17.pick up the bike before he leaves transition and stand it up and get
:12:18. > :12:21.it straight. Gomez is away already, Brownlee did not lose too much time,
:12:22. > :12:24.just glanced over his shoulder to make sure everything was in the
:12:25. > :12:34.right place, Kristian Blummenfelt the first man to leave, first to
:12:35. > :12:42.arrive and first to leave. Now, Schilling comes in on his own, looks
:12:43. > :12:47.like a smart move. He has maintained the advantage of seven or eight
:12:48. > :12:54.seconds over the rest of the chasing group. It's a brave move from
:12:55. > :13:01.Schilling and very smart, capitalising on an opportunity he
:13:02. > :13:06.felt he had. For Gregor Young, relatively new athlete to the scene
:13:07. > :13:11.it's great to see him being confident and breaking away from
:13:12. > :13:20.experienced athletes like Mario Mola and giving himself a fighting
:13:21. > :13:26.chance. Making their way out of transition. Let's join the leaders.
:13:27. > :13:31.Kristian Blummenfelt in first position but being stocked steadily
:13:32. > :13:37.by Javier Gomez and Jonny Brownlee, next down the road is Aaron Royle,
:13:38. > :13:50.then Ben Kanute and Richard Varga. The lead about to be shared by the
:13:51. > :13:55.story. -- by these three. Mario Mola, his record for chasing down
:13:56. > :14:01.the deficit is 41 seconds, that was in Chicago at the grand final in
:14:02. > :14:07.2015. So Mario Mola is going to have two beat some records today and race
:14:08. > :14:17.his own personal standards if he is to challenge the leaders.
:14:18. > :14:24.Javier Gomez stretching the lead slightly just before the hell.
:14:25. > :14:29.Javier Gomez and Kristian Blummenfelt have a couple of yards
:14:30. > :14:35.over Jonathan Brownlee as Brownlee tries to respond. This is Javier
:14:36. > :14:40.Gomez going to work. Not a race winning breakaway by any stretch of
:14:41. > :14:45.the imagination but it could be significant as Gomez puts his foot
:14:46. > :14:51.down on the climb, Kristian Blummenfelt able to respond
:14:52. > :14:56.initially, Brownlee lest capable and Gomez now has the outright lead.
:14:57. > :15:02.This is the Javier Gomez we have seen over the years, certainly seems
:15:03. > :15:05.to favour the Olympic distance over the sprint distance. Hasn't been
:15:06. > :15:10.quite as dominant in sprint races the last couple of races so I think
:15:11. > :15:13.he is far more at home over the Olympic distance and you can see him
:15:14. > :15:16.stretching away here. Really putting daylight between him and Kristian
:15:17. > :15:30.Blummenfelt and Jonny Brownlee. News on Mario Mola. He is only 30
:15:31. > :15:38.seconds behind fourth placed Aaron Royle. And is about to arrive on the
:15:39. > :15:48.shoulder Ben Kanute who was with that front group of seven. Mola has
:15:49. > :15:54.Richard Murray not far behind. Out in front, our leader, Javier Gomez
:15:55. > :16:00.from Spain. Halfway through the final stage of this Olympic distance
