:01:09. > :01:14.Welcome to continued coverage of the williamhill.com UK championship
:01:14. > :01:18.from the Barbican Centre in York. You have had a little taste of the
:01:18. > :01:21.four talents will be seen and second in action this afternoon.
:01:21. > :01:27.One of them was until recently the number-one player in the world,
:01:27. > :01:30.Mark Selby. And there is more to the 21 year older and -- 29 year
:01:30. > :01:40.old and been the Jester from Leicester, as we can see with his
:01:40. > :01:41.
:01:41. > :01:48.profile. Mark Selby has not won as many major ranking events as his
:01:48. > :01:52.current ranking position suggests. He obviously has got there through
:01:52. > :01:57.sheer consistency. Over the past few years he has been in so many
:01:57. > :02:02.semi-finals and finals. He puts a lot of work into his game. He's one
:02:02. > :02:06.of the men to beat. But he has probably under achieved a bit.
:02:06. > :02:11.it comes to that consistency level he produces year-end, year out, one
:02:11. > :02:15.of the things I like about his game is the relentless repetitiveness of
:02:15. > :02:21.his cueing action. It gets a bad rap in as much as the players are
:02:21. > :02:24.rather repetitive. They do not tend to be as exciting as the ones who
:02:24. > :02:34.seem to be a little bit all over the place, but Marks will be's
:02:34. > :02:36.
:02:36. > :02:39.cueing action is as good as anybody's. -- Mark Selby's.
:02:39. > :02:44.watch the movement in his head and the big, long cue action and I
:02:44. > :02:49.wonder, if it is always going to be that big, long, straight line, but
:02:49. > :02:52.certainly, for the time being, it is working superbly well. You would
:02:52. > :02:59.not call him one of the flair players, but in terms of getting
:02:59. > :03:02.the job done, three or four centuries in a row, he is not
:03:02. > :03:09.frightened of scoring highly and making big breaks, which is
:03:09. > :03:12.fantastic to watch. He has a fantastic mentality and he has
:03:12. > :03:17.thrown himself into the season and played in almost everything and
:03:17. > :03:20.done very well on the back of that, although we had heard it said that
:03:20. > :03:24.little lot of players here struggling to keep up the momentum
:03:24. > :03:27.in that department. It is hard for the top players to play a lot of
:03:27. > :03:31.snooker and keep at the high standard they want to be at, but
:03:31. > :03:33.there are times when you need a week's practice on your own two
:03:34. > :03:38.sorts of things out, but if you are playing tournament after tournament,
:03:38. > :03:41.you do not get the chance. Different players are turning to
:03:41. > :03:47.different coaches to find that little bit extra, to give them the
:03:47. > :03:50.edge. Can he win the World Championship? He would be
:03:50. > :03:54.disappointed if he did not win the World Championship or the UK
:03:54. > :03:58.championship in his career, because he has been world number one, so
:03:58. > :04:03.there would be something missing if he did not win one of those
:04:03. > :04:11.tournaments. Mark is taking on Welshman, Ryan Day, who produced a
:04:11. > :04:15.shock in the first round. But, Mark Selby dominates the head-to-head
:04:15. > :04:18.clashes and he won 6-0 you last year, but it was Ryan Day was
:04:18. > :04:24.forced into his stride. We will join the match in frame three, with
:04:24. > :04:34.Mark Selby at the table already rent -- trailing. Dennis Taylor and
:04:34. > :04:45.
:04:45. > :04:51.John Virgo are in the commentary That has made it awkward. He will
:04:51. > :04:56.have to take the yellow instead. Been on a nice, easy pink to the
:04:56. > :05:06.middle. This can happen when you are struggling. With the table been
:05:06. > :05:32.
:05:32. > :05:39.so fast, it is difficult to control the cue ball. His cueing action is
:05:39. > :05:44.all over the place at the moment. Worrying times for Mark Selby.
:05:44. > :05:51.There is just not pushing the cue through, straight, not finding the
:05:51. > :05:56.centre of the cue ball. With a straight shot, you hit the cue ball,
:05:56. > :06:03.it will go straight and hit the red in the middle, but there was some
:06:03. > :06:13.unwanted side with no intention of side and the cue ball. As you said,
:06:13. > :06:24.
:06:24. > :06:34.worrying. For Mark Selby and his It was not quite as easy as
:06:34. > :06:39.
:06:39. > :06:49.everyone thought, that last shot. Have a look at the table and the
:06:49. > :06:49.
:06:49. > :07:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:07:40. > :07:46.way that the reds are. This would be some clearance! He would like to
:07:46. > :07:52.get closer to the one near the blue, to drop it into the pocket. I tell
:07:52. > :08:02.you what, he just took his eye off the pot, so everything going wrong
:08:02. > :08:02.
:08:02. > :08:12.at the moment. Mark Selby how often -- how often do you see him miss a
:08:12. > :08:20.
:08:20. > :08:25.The ball is being cleaned, although I did not detect any kick. Usually,
:08:25. > :08:35.if you get at kick, you miss it to the other jaw, but he hit that on
:08:35. > :08:43.
:08:43. > :08:53.He could have done it with a little bit of angle. He can get up for the
:08:53. > :08:56.
:08:56. > :09:02.red that is to the right of the black and reds. He has not made a
:09:02. > :09:07.good job of that. He has snookered himself on the easier Robb the reds.
:09:07. > :09:17.There are a few of those reds that will go, into the corner pocket, so
:09:17. > :09:27.
:09:27. > :09:33.Let us have a look at this. He just got into it too much. He wanted to
:09:33. > :09:37.be near the black. This is a tricky one that he is taking on, and what
:09:37. > :09:47.a good shot, and what they could cannon on the black. The cannon on
:09:47. > :09:55.
:09:55. > :10:05.the black was a bonus. -- what a That could be a frame winner. 45
:10:05. > :10:25.
:10:25. > :10:35.Just the black needed. A glance at the scoreboard to make sure. One
:10:35. > :10:39.
:10:39. > :10:45.frame before the interval, and regardless of what happens, Mark
:10:45. > :10:55.will be heading off to the practice table. He is not with it at the
:10:55. > :11:15.
:11:15. > :11:19.moment. He pots this red, I don't think Mark Selby will carry on.
:11:19. > :11:23.mid-session interval coming up after this and that is not the best
:11:23. > :11:32.break-off shot. He has left the pot to the left corner and there is a
:11:32. > :11:42.way round to the back of the black. Can Ryan Day Open with a good pot?
:11:42. > :11:46.
:11:46. > :11:49.Not quite. With it being the first to six frames, 3-1 behind at the
:11:49. > :11:59.mid-session interval would not be that bad, as we show you that
:11:59. > :12:22.
:12:22. > :12:32.Congested around the black spot. But he can develop those reds and
:12:32. > :12:39.
:12:39. > :12:49.the black looks to be available. If the white pulls up he can go red,
:12:49. > :12:53.
:12:53. > :13:03.blue, then up for the reds near the black. The one to the right of the
:13:03. > :13:03.
:13:03. > :13:13.black available from the right. The one above the black available into
:13:13. > :13:40.
:13:40. > :13:50.That has certainly spread them. He did that because he hadn't the
:13:50. > :13:56.
:13:56. > :14:01.angle to play the reds near the black. That was the only red that
:14:01. > :14:10.was available to a lack, even after splitting them all over the table.
:14:10. > :14:16.It is very important, this visit. We know what a good player he is.
:14:16. > :14:24.So plaque, based on the first three frames, he has just not been
:14:24. > :14:34.scoring at all -- so far. These are big moments in the match for Mark
:14:34. > :14:45.
:14:45. > :14:51.He needs to make the most of this But, he is capable of doing this.
:14:51. > :14:58.We have seen over the last five or six seasons, he can go a couple of
:14:58. > :15:08.frames going, but, he can come back very strongly, also. He needs a
:15:08. > :15:09.
:15:09. > :15:15.vast improvement on the three He still moves around a little bit
:15:15. > :15:25.on the shot. It is something he has always done. It is just a natural
:15:25. > :15:40.
:15:40. > :15:46.He has got a good sense of humour. I said to him the other day, when I
:15:46. > :15:50.was playing in the World Seniors against Nigel Bond, and I said that
:15:50. > :15:55.I didn't realise I was moving around on the shot, and he said,
:15:55. > :16:05.you are talking to the wrong man! He plays with a bit of movement,
:16:05. > :16:13.and he copes very well with it. You can see that slight movement.
:16:13. > :16:17.Played a good shot, there - brought the black into play. Under normal
:16:17. > :16:22.circumstances you would say this was a frame-winning opportunity,
:16:22. > :16:32.but I would not count my chickens, and I don't think Mark Selby well,
:16:32. > :16:42.
:16:42. > :16:48.either, not after what has happened He is one of the best break-
:16:48. > :16:58.builders in the game, having made 269 centuries, 55 centuries last
:16:58. > :17:07.season. He is a heavy scorer. There is no doubt about that. This is the
:17:07. > :17:10.first time he has really got his hand on the table. He had a 35
:17:10. > :17:20.break in the first frame, but that was not good enough to win him that
:17:20. > :17:22.
:17:22. > :17:30.Nice angle night, on this black. Loose reds and either side, 46
:17:30. > :17:40.points in the lead, possible 83 left, so, he only needs two or
:17:40. > :17:57.
:17:57. > :18:01.And, that could have worked out Ryan Day has only had one shot, he
:18:01. > :18:07.attempted a long red, that he's usually pretty good at, and he has
:18:08. > :18:17.been sitting down at Racine's. But Mark Selby, with that split, was
:18:18. > :18:34.
:18:34. > :18:44.very unlucky -- has been sitting down a row since. -- ever since.
:18:44. > :18:54.
:18:54. > :18:58.It is always the sign of a great player, when you are out of sorts,
:18:59. > :19:03.you lose three frames, you have missed all sorts of shots, you
:19:03. > :19:10.cannot knock in the long ones in, and all of a sudden, he is back,
:19:10. > :19:14.looking like a world-beater. He is taking these quite well. It would
:19:14. > :19:24.have been quite easy to press the panic button, the way that he was
:19:24. > :19:30.
:19:30. > :19:39.When he pots the black he will be 66 points in front, with 67
:19:39. > :19:49.remaining, so, this black and one more red is all that is required.
:19:49. > :19:56.
:19:56. > :20:00.I think the red goes past the two Let us have a look from the other
:20:00. > :20:05.side. I could never see from this end, when you are directly behind
:20:05. > :20:11.the ball it is easier to see the angle. You would like to lead a
:20:11. > :20:15.frame ball easier than this. It only just goes. We have got the
:20:15. > :20:25.perfect picture. We will know if it goes in, before anyone else. No
:20:25. > :20:35.
:20:35. > :20:40.Well, he will be disappointed at missing the black, but not
:20:40. > :20:45.disappointed with that 67 break, which should be enough to give him
:20:45. > :20:55.this first frame. He followed that by winning frame five, and is just
:20:55. > :20:56.
:20:56. > :21:06.one frame the end, and rejoin the match, live, in frame six. We join
:21:06. > :21:11.
:21:11. > :21:16.Jenice -- Dennis and Joan to bring Ryan has just missed what should
:21:16. > :21:23.have been frame ball, which should have been an easy red, but this was
:21:23. > :21:27.the red, he needed this, and a colour, and Mark Selby would have
:21:27. > :21:33.needed a snooker, but that is the type of pot that has been missed
:21:33. > :21:39.all afternoon. Ryan Day has potted all the difficult ones, and all of
:21:39. > :21:46.a sudden, he will miss a sitter. That's definitely should have been
:21:46. > :21:55.4-2. Look at the pot success rate, just 81% for Mark Selby, and Ryan
:21:55. > :22:04.Day has dropped to 79. You have got to be up in the 90s. No really big
:22:04. > :22:13.breaks in the match, so far, 68 for Ryan Day, 67 for Mark Selby. This
:22:13. > :22:23.is a key frame. To open up at two from advantage, at this stage means
:22:23. > :22:23.
:22:23. > :22:29.you can relax a little bit -- a two frame advantage. This will bring
:22:29. > :22:35.the difficult pink into play. He has just got to be careful that he
:22:35. > :22:38.gets a good cue ball, and does not bring the red away from the cushion
:22:38. > :22:46.- is he going to double this across, and try to get the snooker behind
:22:46. > :22:54.the pink? No, he has played to free up the pink. Funnily enough, this
:22:54. > :23:04.is the type of shot that Ryan Day has been potting, and Ryan just
:23:04. > :23:09.wanted to bring the pink into play, but, if this long red goes in, he
:23:09. > :23:15.could win the frame. It would be a one night, after missing an easy
:23:15. > :23:21.one, if he were to knock this one in. And look where it has finished.
:23:21. > :23:31.This could be a turning point, if Ryan Day was to lose this. He could
:23:31. > :23:35.
:23:35. > :23:40.It is not going to be the easiest clearance. And he will need the
:23:40. > :23:44.clearance, there is no way round it. Even if he takes the black, he
:23:44. > :23:54.needs the six remaining colours. The blues not on its spot, and the
:23:54. > :23:54.
:23:54. > :24:04.pink isn't. -- blue is not. He is not absolutely perfect on pink or
:24:04. > :24:09.
:24:09. > :24:14.He decided to take a chance and bring the blue into play, and
:24:14. > :24:19.looking at his body language, has he snookered himself? He was going
:24:19. > :24:24.to leave himself a long yellow, unlucky to snooker himself, but
:24:24. > :24:30.that is exactly what he has done. He could a try to get a bit closer
:24:31. > :24:36.to the yellow. I do not blame him for trying to get the blue away,
:24:36. > :24:46.but he can just get to this yellow, but it is important that he gets it
:24:46. > :24:52.
:24:52. > :25:00.That is safe enough, but he could be in trouble next time he comes to
:25:00. > :25:06.the table. It was key to make the object ball safe. It is not
:25:06. > :25:12.straightforward to get a snooker from here. He has got the double-
:25:12. > :25:20.kiss, and if he has its mitt the fluke and -- fluked the snooker
:25:20. > :25:30.behind the blue, he is very fortunate. Ryan Day, very fortunate
:25:30. > :25:32.
:25:32. > :25:37.there, when he double-kiss that He was trying to leave the white
:25:37. > :25:47.behind the brown and pleaded with side, but, just watch the double-
:25:47. > :25:51.
:25:51. > :25:58.kiss. -- played it with side. Two He does not want to hit the green
:25:58. > :26:06.here, and he hasn't, and he has got it safe. He holds his hand up to
:26:07. > :26:16.apologise, but it was a good hit. What was he apologising for?! The
:26:17. > :26:21.
:26:21. > :26:31.other man fluked the snooker. could have played is better. Even
:26:31. > :26:41.
:26:41. > :26:51.Now, he could be close to potting this. But, why and they should have
:26:51. > :26:55.
:26:55. > :27:00.had him in behind the green. -- He has hit that too thinly, but has
:27:00. > :27:07.he put a snooker? It is all happening. Is it going to pull up,
:27:07. > :27:12.though, it hasn't, but, how do you get up onto the green. Ryan Day
:27:12. > :27:22.puffs his cheeks boat. He has got a terrific amount of cueing power,
:27:22. > :27:47.
:27:47. > :27:55.and he is going to have to call on He can nick this yellow in, but I
:27:55. > :28:03.don't see how he can get close to the green. Thinner potting angle
:28:03. > :28:08.than he'd have liked. He has got to be careful he does not snooker
:28:08. > :28:14.himself. I don't think he can get close to the green. Has to be
:28:14. > :28:19.careful not to fall in behind the pink. And he has done. That was
:28:19. > :28:29.always a possibility. A further across the table you go, the pink
:28:29. > :28:37.
:28:37. > :28:47.and blue are always going to be in Just will points behind, so this is
:28:47. > :28:54.
:28:54. > :29:04.an important escape -- just 12 There is enough room round the back
:29:04. > :29:16.
:29:16. > :29:20.of the black to hit the green, but There was a chance he can screw
:29:20. > :29:30.back for the brown. It could have been easier. But the pressure on
:29:30. > :29:32.
:29:32. > :29:37.this one, John. Quick glance at the scoreboard, green and brown needed.
:29:37. > :29:44.Terrific pot on the green, and this ground, to go 19 points in front,
:29:44. > :29:54.as we see the green disappear. 19 points in front with just 18
:29:54. > :30:02.
:30:02. > :30:12.That just about sums up this match, a terrific pot on the green, how
:30:12. > :30:13.
:30:13. > :30:23.can he miss that? It is amazing he has missed. I can think of five
:30:23. > :30:35.
:30:35. > :30:42.straightforward pots in this match, It will not be a straightforward
:30:42. > :30:50.blue. But what a turning point this frame could free -- could prove to
:30:50. > :30:55.be. Looks to be straight into the corner. He is having the cue ball
:30:55. > :31:05.cleaned because of the way he is going to play the shot. If it is
:31:05. > :31:05.
:31:05. > :31:15.dead straight he will run it It couldn't be much straighter than
:31:15. > :31:16.
:31:16. > :31:20.that. Just deliver that cue in a straight line, a little movement,
:31:20. > :31:30.he has missed it. That is the way he was cueing earlier in the match.
:31:30. > :31:30.
:31:30. > :31:40.He hasn't cued well this afternoon. There is still a chance he could be
:31:40. > :31:47.
:31:47. > :31:56.Just this blue needed. He has got the snooker, would you believe it?
:31:56. > :32:05.When you are missing pots by that distance it could go anywhere. Is
:32:05. > :32:09.there a cue doctor in house? Mark Selby is one of the best in the
:32:09. > :32:17.game at escaping from snookers. There is room around the back of
:32:18. > :32:23.the blue, he will have to be spot- on. Where is the blue? Does it past
:32:23. > :32:33.the pink? If not it will be a difficult one up into the corner.
:32:33. > :32:39.
:32:39. > :32:47.It doesn't go in there. Another Why he took that hard. He is trying
:32:47. > :32:51.to get the cue ball but on the cushion. If he had played it slow
:32:51. > :32:58.were there was every chance if he got the blue he could get the
:32:58. > :33:03.snooker behind the pink. Been a very strange game, from start to
:33:03. > :33:13.finish. The first game, had a be rack after playing for 15 minutes,
:33:13. > :33:21.
:33:21. > :33:27.never really lifted off at all. -- re-rack. The standard has been a
:33:27. > :33:32.very poor. Still very exciting there. If he can hit cushion first,
:33:32. > :33:41.catch the blue and not catch the black, there is a possibility of
:33:41. > :33:47.getting a snooker but he would have to be very precise. He needed to
:33:47. > :33:57.hit it full ball, that wasn't good either. There is an angle here.
:33:57. > :34:08.
:34:08. > :34:12.Mark, in the first half, couldn't knock a long ball in. He had five
:34:12. > :34:19.goes at the long pots, missed them all. He has knocked a few in since

:20:23. > :20:24.
:20:24. > :20:34.Mark King must have been thinking when he was sitting down, I am not
:20:34. > :20:38.
:20:38. > :20:48.going to get another shot. This is a chance he was not expecting. Has
:20:48. > :21:02.
:21:02. > :21:07.I cannot believe Luca didn't win the match at that visit. If you
:21:07. > :21:15.think he might be coming close to you, play harder, but not the place
:21:15. > :21:25.where you can leave yourself next to the red. Will he live to regret
:21:25. > :21:27.
:21:28. > :21:32.that? Mark King is under pressure, and he's a very good player. He
:21:32. > :21:40.could play the cross double knowing that blue or above is enough to
:21:40. > :21:46.take the frame. Or, does he go all out to play the pot? He has got to
:21:46. > :21:56.get a colour, remember. He has had a look at the potting angle which
:21:56. > :22:00.
:22:00. > :22:10.Just when he needed a bit of luck he got it, because it could have
:22:10. > :22:20.
:22:20. > :22:30.I am not sure that he played to get the on the green, but he will
:22:30. > :22:43.
:22:43. > :22:53.settle for that. -- beyond the That is an expensive miss. Foul.
:22:53. > :23:14.
:23:14. > :23:24.I do not blame him for that because it was a pretty tricky situation to
:23:24. > :23:38.
:23:38. > :23:42.try and get safe. The trouble is, What an excellent pot from Luca
:23:42. > :23:49.Brecel. He knows now that he is in the quarter-finals of a ranking
:23:49. > :23:58.event for the first time. Mark King has just not been at the races
:23:58. > :24:02.today. The young man from Belgium is going to be playing in his first
:24:02. > :24:06.quarter final against Shaun Murphy. Stunning display from the teenager,
:24:06. > :24:10.the youngest-ever player to make it through to the quarter finals of
:24:10. > :24:14.the UK Championship. He is fresh to the snooker scene but is starting
:24:15. > :24:19.to fulfil the huge weight of expectation that has been placed on
:24:19. > :24:24.him for some time now. We might have lost Judd Trump early on in
:24:24. > :24:29.the tournament but there is a new, young snooker star in town, and his
:24:29. > :24:35.young snooker star in town, and his name is Luca Brecel. The first two
:24:36. > :24:40.frames were so but they wanted to go home. -- so bad, I wanted to go
:24:40. > :24:46.on, but then just in one frame, everything changed. Mark was
:24:46. > :24:50.getting a little bit nervous, I think. Tremendous result for the
:24:50. > :24:55.tournament and for the sport, we have got another big name, another
:24:55. > :25:01.young big name. Without doubt the best player Belgium has produced.
:25:01. > :25:05.It has been a long time coming. It is tough for overseas countries to
:25:05. > :25:10.produce the quantity of players needed to get a good one, but he is
:25:10. > :25:15.a dangerous player. He is now the youngest-ever quarter-finalist, of
:25:15. > :25:19.course Ronnie O'Sullivan won it as a 17-year-old in 1993. There will
:25:19. > :25:22.be comparisons with all sorts of players for Luca Brecel, but it is
:25:23. > :25:28.not something he is going to take on board, because he has not got
:25:28. > :25:35.that much to lose. Absolutely. In every match he is gaining a lot
:25:35. > :25:42.more experience. There should be no expectation. Purely expectation
:25:42. > :25:45.would be that which he puts himself under. He's certainly going to go
:25:45. > :25:50.long way in the game. Whether that is in this tournament remains to be
:25:50. > :25:56.seen, but he's going to be having a tough match against Shaun Murphy.
:25:56. > :26:01.How do you see that one going? Shaun Murphy is probably a stronger
:26:01. > :26:05.player. And he is looking to win the event. But it is always
:26:05. > :26:12.difficult when you play a younger player. It can always go wrong for
:26:12. > :26:16.you, so Shaun Murphy will be on his mettle, I would imagine. Luca
:26:16. > :26:22.Brecel is still making a name for himself, and is doing a good job of
:26:22. > :26:28.that so far. This evening, the last two matches of the last 16, John
:26:28. > :26:34.Higgins chasing his 4th UK Championship title against Mark
:26:34. > :26:37.Davis, and Neil Robertson stays -- pleased Barry Hawkins. In addition

:27:09. > :27:13.The two men who are generally favourites, John Higgins and Neil
:27:13. > :27:19.Robertson arc in action tonight. First, Higgins against Davis, how
:27:19. > :27:25.do you expect that going? You would expect the big names to get through,
:27:25. > :27:30.but both players are in the same position. Good friends and practice
:27:30. > :27:38.partners, but up against it, up against two great champions and you
:27:38. > :27:45.never know - they around the great chance. -- are in with a great
:27:45. > :27:50.chance. John Higgins has been doing well in the PTC events. That is a
:27:50. > :27:55.good yardstick Aster your general form, and they think his general
:27:55. > :28:01.former's higher than it was last year. He looks to be back on the
:28:01. > :28:06.crest of a wave. Why would not put it past him to win a big event on
:28:06. > :28:13.the television during the season, but he is up against a good player.
:28:13. > :28:19.Mark Davis is established now, as a player. And, Neil Robertson is
:28:19. > :28:23.getting into that elite category. Absolutely. He is going to try to
:28:23. > :28:31.keep that going. He is the one to beat in this tournament, on form,
:28:31. > :28:37.alone. Neil Robertson, the man to beat, the you think, Steve? When
:28:37. > :28:43.John Higgins is on form, he is still the one to beat. Thank you at
