:00:17. > :00:22.Hello and welcome to Sportsday with me, Hugh Ferris.

:00:23. > :00:23.The headlines this evening: Garbine Muguruza

:00:24. > :00:27.She wins nine games in a row to prevent Venus Williams

:00:28. > :00:30.claiming her first Grand Slam title in nine years.

:00:31. > :00:32.England collapse at Trent Bridge to leave South Africa

:00:33. > :00:35.Lewis Hamilton storms to a record-equalling pole

:00:36. > :00:37.position for tomorrow's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

:00:38. > :00:39.Also coming up in the programme, Chris Froome is back in yellow.

:00:40. > :00:43.He shakes off his rivals on stage 14 to retake the overall lead

:00:44. > :01:01.And join me, Kate Gray at the Olympic Park, when I will be looking

:01:02. > :01:09.ahead to all the action at the world para athletic Championships.

:01:10. > :01:12.So then, plenty to come, including the latest big

:01:13. > :01:14.Premier League signing, but we'll start at Wimbledon

:01:15. > :01:16.and while Sunday might bring a very familiar winner,

:01:17. > :01:18.the women's tournament has produced a new champion.

:01:19. > :01:25.Let's head there now and join Hugh Woozencroft.

:01:26. > :01:37.A magical day for Muguruza? Yes, Hugh, a new name etched in Wimbledon

:01:38. > :01:42.history today, that of Garbine Muguruza. She becomes the second

:01:43. > :01:47.woman from Spain win the ladies title here. Her stand-in coach

:01:48. > :01:51.Conchita Martinez won it in 1994. She won it in real style, taking on

:01:52. > :02:00.the five-time champion Venus Williams.

:02:01. > :02:02.On Finals weekend, Centre Court brings the generations together,

:02:03. > :02:14.Garbine Muguruza, one of the newest stars against its greatest survivor.

:02:15. > :02:17.At 37, the stage was set for Venus Williams aiming to be

:02:18. > :02:21.Beneath the roof you can hear the secrets of her longevity, power.

:02:22. > :02:24.She wants to close out points quickly, but amid the aggression

:02:25. > :02:29.Those flashes took Williams to the brink of the first set.

:02:30. > :02:31.She had two points for the advantage, but back came

:02:32. > :02:32.Muguruza, with bravery and brilliance,

:02:33. > :02:48.Her battling saw off break points and suddenly she had the lead.

:02:49. > :02:55.That exchange would have its effect on Williams.

:02:56. > :03:01.Even with her experience, she gets unsettled.

:03:02. > :03:03.Muguruza has grown into this tournament, now she had

:03:04. > :03:07.Three breaks in the second set had her racing towards the title.

:03:08. > :03:09.Two years ago she was denied by Serena.

:03:10. > :03:19.Tears of despair a couple of years ago but overwhelming joy now.

:03:20. > :03:23.Venus Williams says she will be back again to win more.

:03:24. > :03:33.It was the game's new star to light up centre.

:03:34. > :03:39.I had I think the hardest match today against Venus.

:03:40. > :03:42.I grew up watching her play so it is incredible

:03:43. > :03:48.SUE BARKER: But she was an inspiration?

:03:49. > :04:07.That first set was crucial, wasn't it?

:04:08. > :04:13.We both had a lot of chances so I am glad I made it.

:04:14. > :04:43.Congratulations, it is amazing. I know how hard you work. This means

:04:44. > :04:51.so much to you and your family. Well done today. Beautiful. But also,

:04:52. > :04:56.Venus, well done to you because you have had a great tournament. Yes,

:04:57. > :05:03.thank you. Thank you to my team who have been here day in, day out.

:05:04. > :05:09.Thank you to my family. I love you guys. And a message to Serena? I

:05:10. > :05:13.miss you. I tried my best to do the same things you do, but I think

:05:14. > :05:20.they'll be other opportunities, I do.

:05:21. > :05:31.So Venus Williams says she'll be back but it was a fantastic day for

:05:32. > :05:36.Garbine Muguruza. After the match we spoke to another former champion,

:05:37. > :05:44.Mary Pierce. It was quite something. That first set was a real battle.

:05:45. > :05:49.There was the epic long rally of 19 shots where Garbine Muguruza played

:05:50. > :05:54.so solid, so aggressive. I think that really turned things around for

:05:55. > :05:59.her, winning that game, going to 5-5 and winning the first set. And it

:06:00. > :06:03.seemed physically Venus Williams was at the same player in the second

:06:04. > :06:09.set. The first set took a lot out of her physically. Very quickly,

:06:10. > :06:14.Garbine Muguruza took that match. But so happy for her. I think she

:06:15. > :06:19.really deserves it. She has worked hard to get back to where she is

:06:20. > :06:24.now. Garbine Muguruza won the French Open last year and I was so happy to

:06:25. > :06:26.see that smile on her face afterwards. And having Conchita

:06:27. > :06:32.Martinez in her camp as well has also given her confidence that

:06:33. > :06:38.someone else has already done this and can give her tips. What does

:06:39. > :06:44.this victory mean to her, the second grand slam title, how big an

:06:45. > :06:48.achievement if this? I think it consolidates and concerns your

:06:49. > :06:52.position in tennis and to say, I am a champion, I am a grand slam

:06:53. > :06:58.champion now, I have done it twice. I'm here to stay and hopefully to

:06:59. > :07:01.win some more titles. Garbine Muguruza did not have a great year

:07:02. > :07:06.over the last 12 months. It has been hard for her to adjust to a new

:07:07. > :07:10.lifestyle. So many things have changed and she has had real

:07:11. > :07:15.difficulties. There is a time it takes to get used to that. She has

:07:16. > :07:19.gone through that time and now she is Wimbledon champion now. Having

:07:20. > :07:25.two grand slam titles will give her a lot more confidence for the rest

:07:26. > :07:32.of the year. Venus Williams will be so disappointed. There was so much

:07:33. > :07:41.history riding on this match. Were you disappointed? I was so proud of

:07:42. > :07:45.her. At 37 years old, and with an immune condition, to be playing so

:07:46. > :07:53.well is incredible. After everything she has been doing in her career,

:07:54. > :07:57.she obviously enjoys playing tennis. She is obviously sad that she lost

:07:58. > :08:01.but I think she can be proud of herself because she knows she has

:08:02. > :08:07.gone out there and she has given 100% of herself and really left

:08:08. > :08:10.everything out on the court. Mary Pierce with David on steam.

:08:11. > :08:13.British fans would have been hoping Johanna Konta could make it to the

:08:14. > :08:20.final but it was not to be for her. Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid

:08:21. > :08:22.defended their wheelchair In what was a repeat

:08:23. > :08:25.of last year's final, this years was played on a show

:08:26. > :08:28.court for the first time. The pair had to come from behind

:08:29. > :08:31.after losing the first set on a tie break to France's Stephane Houdet

:08:32. > :08:49.and Nicolas Peifer. It is quite tiring and we had to

:08:50. > :08:53.restart and go again. I think we did a good job of having no regrets,

:08:54. > :09:03.playing instinctively, and that is what we did in the end. More finals

:09:04. > :09:20.today. Out on Centre Court there is a very tight men's doubles final.

:09:21. > :09:24.Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic taking on Lukasz Kubot

:09:25. > :09:29.Well, focus turns to the men's final tomorrow.

:09:30. > :09:32.14 years after winning his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon,

:09:33. > :09:34.Roger Federer stands on the verge of an historic eighth

:09:35. > :09:36.All-England Club triumph and 19th Grand Slam title.

:09:37. > :09:39.Victory over Marin Cilic would also make the 35-year-old the oldest man

:09:40. > :09:47.I think the record is really gave me an extra source of motivation and

:09:48. > :09:56.inspired me to train harder and inspire me to keep doing what I am

:09:57. > :10:00.doing. The greats of the game did not play for records. I could get

:10:01. > :10:05.inspired by the fact that maybe I could break a record. Now we are in

:10:06. > :10:10.the same situation again, it reminds me of May be my first Wimbledon when

:10:11. > :10:15.I was trying to do that or when I was trying to defend my first

:10:16. > :10:19.Wimbledon or going for my fifth Wimbledon to beat Bjorn Borg was

:10:20. > :10:23.amazing. I am happy to have these moments at Wimbledon. I know when I

:10:24. > :10:30.step on court against Cilic, I will be ready. The occasion will not be

:10:31. > :10:33.too big to conquer, to understand what I am going through. I will be

:10:34. > :10:40.ready and I am looking forward to it. So Federer are going for a slice

:10:41. > :10:47.of history tomorrow when he takes on Croatia's Marin Cilic. The big news

:10:48. > :10:49.is Garbine Muguruza of Spain has won the ladies title over Venus

:10:50. > :10:52.Williams. Thank you.

:10:53. > :10:55.England have handed South Africa control of the second test

:10:56. > :10:57.at Trent Bridge after a batting collapse on day two.

:10:58. > :11:00.After wrapping up the tourists' first innings for 335 this morning.

:11:01. > :11:03.England were bowled out for 205 in reply, losing 7

:11:04. > :11:12.And South Africa have extended their lead.

:11:13. > :11:25.A serene scene at Trent Bridge. Down below, Joe Root and England prop

:11:26. > :11:33.Leave plotting to break that. If there is one player they can rely on

:11:34. > :11:37.to create noise, it is James Anderson. Needing four dismissals to

:11:38. > :11:46.wrap up the South Africa innings, Anderson was in no mood to share

:11:47. > :11:52.them out. Little over half an hour played, 335 all out. The applause

:11:53. > :11:57.well earned. Now over to South Africa, to plot their response. It

:11:58. > :12:01.was as swift as it was effective. Alistair Cook stopped before he was

:12:02. > :12:06.allowed to get started. The very next ball, Keaton Jennings, out.

:12:07. > :12:12.Trent Bridge suddenly silenced. Then it was down to Joe Root to get the

:12:13. > :12:14.crowd on their feet. He passed 50. A recovery of sorts but one that would

:12:15. > :12:30.not last. When he went for 78, England were right back

:12:31. > :12:33.in trouble. Benz begs could not offer a single run of help. Now the

:12:34. > :12:35.only sound, that of wickets falling and South Africa celebrating.

:12:36. > :12:38.England collapsing to 205 all out. The day ending as it began, with

:12:39. > :12:41.South Africa batting. Only Trent Bridge now a little less calm. South

:12:42. > :12:46.Africa are firmly in control. England's women have set up

:12:47. > :12:48.a World Cup semifinal clash with South Africa after a convincing

:12:49. > :12:53.92 run win over West Indies today. They continued their good form

:12:54. > :12:56.with the bat, posting 220-7 In reply, West Indies

:12:57. > :13:06.never came close, losing wickets regularly

:13:07. > :13:08.with Natalie Sciver picking up 3 as England sealed

:13:09. > :13:11.a comfortable victory. Australia will meet India

:13:12. > :13:13.in the other semifinal. Confirmation that England

:13:14. > :13:22.finished top of the group stage. Australia beat South Africa today

:13:23. > :13:25.by 59 runs, finishing second India's huge 186 runs win over

:13:26. > :13:29.New Zealand saw them finish third. Lewis Hamilton will start tomorrow's

:13:30. > :13:31.British Grand Prix on pole position as he attempts to make

:13:32. > :13:33.history at Silverstone. Patrick Gearey watched the Mercedes

:13:34. > :13:44.driver dominate today's qualifying. The future of the British Grand Prix

:13:45. > :13:48.might be unclear, but its presence, that is all about Lewis Hamilton.

:13:49. > :13:53.This weekend they have come to see Lewis Hamilton come to make history,

:13:54. > :13:57.to level Alain Prost and Jim Clark's record of five race wins in the

:13:58. > :14:02.British Grand Prix. Hamilton equalled Clark's record of five pole

:14:03. > :14:06.positions. It started in very British conditions. The drizzle but

:14:07. > :14:11.had disrupted final practice, reappeared for the first session of

:14:12. > :14:17.qualifying. Daniel Ricciardo suffered turbo failure and there was

:14:18. > :14:27.a problem for full on the -- Ben Ando Alonzo. Hamilton came to the

:14:28. > :14:32.fore in Q2 and Q3. His final lap was quicker than Kimi Raikkonen. I

:14:33. > :14:36.needed to make sure I got that lap in. I did not do it in the last race

:14:37. > :14:42.so I made sure I saved it this weekend. Thank you, guys so much. A

:14:43. > :14:47.sensational piece of driving which will be remembered by all who saw

:14:48. > :14:49.it. Motor racing offers no guarantees. When Hamilton gets

:14:50. > :14:53.ahead, he does not often look back. It could prove a crucial day

:14:54. > :14:56.at the Tour de France after Chris Froome reclaimed

:14:57. > :14:58.the leader's yellow jersey The Team Sky rider finished

:14:59. > :15:02.just a second behind stage-winner Michael Matthews,

:15:03. > :15:03.but managed to break away from the previous overall

:15:04. > :15:05.leader Fabio Aru. Turning a six second deficit

:15:06. > :15:08.into a 19 second advantage. Britain have won a second gold

:15:09. > :15:11.at the World Para-athletics Making it four medals

:15:12. > :15:17.in total so far. And there are plenty of chances

:15:18. > :15:20.to add to that tally during the evening session

:15:21. > :15:22.on day two. Kate we should start with Stef Reid

:15:23. > :15:39.after her gold today. Absolutely right. Stef Reid has been

:15:40. > :15:44.waiting for this gold medal for 11 years. She was over the moon to

:15:45. > :15:49.receive the gold medal. It has been very windy here at the Olympic Park.

:15:50. > :15:54.She took the lead from her first jump, then bettered it in the third

:15:55. > :15:59.round to five metres 40 and managed to maintain that lead until the very

:16:00. > :16:03.end. Showing off all her composure and experience she has gained over

:16:04. > :16:14.the years, and in front of the home crowd, it was the dream ending for

:16:15. > :16:16.Stef Reid. We spoke to her afterwards, as much as it has been

:16:17. > :16:19.an overwhelming moment for her, I think it has sunk in. This is what

:16:20. > :16:24.she had to say. I think it was overwhelming but I probably need a

:16:25. > :16:29.moment to reflect on it. It is really satisfying. When you work on

:16:30. > :16:33.something for a long time, it is satisfying. I think I am really

:16:34. > :16:39.grateful and thankful to everyone who has stayed with me and been on

:16:40. > :16:45.the journey. Two goals so far but there could be more later on? It

:16:46. > :16:51.will be a very busy evening taking place in the stadium. We have a lot

:16:52. > :16:55.of Brits in action. I will give you the highlights. Paralympics champion

:16:56. > :17:02.Richard Whitehead goes in his trademark event the 200 metres, the

:17:03. > :17:06.event which made him famous at London 2012. He has been in

:17:07. > :17:10.incredible form this season. He has already broken the world record in

:17:11. > :17:15.this event. He is feeling confident at the age of 40 that he will still

:17:16. > :17:19.be able to perform here in London and definitely put on a great show

:17:20. > :17:25.for the crowds here. We are definitely looking forward to seeing

:17:26. > :17:29.him. Also Kadeena Cox. You may remember her from the Paralympics.

:17:30. > :17:34.She was the only athlete to compete in two sports and win gold in both,

:17:35. > :17:41.the athletics and cycling. She will go in the T 30 to 100 metres. And

:17:42. > :17:45.there is also Hollie Arnold, the Paralympic champion, will champion

:17:46. > :17:49.and hoping to defend her title in the javelin throw. She missed out on

:17:50. > :17:54.a medal five years ago and will be hoping to put that right in front of

:17:55. > :18:09.the home crowd this evening. Thank you.

:18:10. > :18:12.and Emma Wiggs both won gold at the Para-canoe European

:18:13. > :18:14.Championships in Bulgaria, adding to their Paralympic

:18:15. > :18:16.Former swimmer-turned canoeist Chippington,

:18:17. > :18:18.who has won 12 Paralympic medals, beat Russian Alexandra Dupik

:18:19. > :18:22.into first place by almost a second and a half in the KL1W 200 metres

:18:23. > :18:26.Wiggs won the KL2W 200 metres final, and was almost three seconds

:18:27. > :18:28.faster than her fellow British team-mate Charlotte Henshaw

:18:29. > :18:41.The England under 19 and have won their Championship final against

:18:42. > :18:46.Georgia. The under 19 took the lead through a second-half header before

:18:47. > :19:01.one of the worst or best goals you will ever see. England again went in

:19:02. > :19:09.front in the second half. Lucas Metra has won this for them. This is

:19:10. > :19:13.for England is another significant piece of silverware in what has been

:19:14. > :19:25.a fantastic summer for them in the age groups.

:19:26. > :19:26.Chelsea have completed the signing of French

:19:27. > :19:28.international midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

:19:29. > :19:30.The 22-year-old helped the principality side claim

:19:31. > :19:32.the Ligue 1 title last season, and joins Chelsea on a five-year

:19:33. > :19:35.contract for a reported fee of up to 40 million pounds.

:19:36. > :19:38.Great Britain's Lois Toulson and Matty Lee have won silver

:19:39. > :19:40.in the diving mixed 10 metre synchronised event at the World

:19:41. > :19:44.The teenagers, who won European gold together last month,

:19:45. > :19:47.held off the challenge of North Korea who had to settle for third.

:19:48. > :20:02.It means a lot. We have not been training that long, about a year

:20:03. > :20:06.now. We have shown really good performances over Europe and in

:20:07. > :20:10.Britain. This is our first world competition and we have done well

:20:11. > :20:13.which we are happy with. It is hard to do synchro with a boy and girl

:20:14. > :20:18.pairing but I think we suit really well together on the board. I don't

:20:19. > :20:28.know what it is but I feel like I relax with Lois a lot on the board

:20:29. > :20:29.and she died is really amazing. It is a good partnership and we are

:20:30. > :20:31.happy. Ian Poulter has a share of the lead

:20:32. > :20:34.heading into the final round He's on nine under par along with

:20:35. > :20:39.another Englishman Callum Shinkwin Poulter, who finished second

:20:40. > :20:42.in the Players Championship back Three birdies for him, this approach

:20:43. > :20:47.shot on the eighth helping him to one of those his playing partner

:20:48. > :20:49.24-year-old Shinkwin, ranking outside the world's top 400,

:20:50. > :20:53.had a mixed round - Horse racing's prestigious

:20:54. > :20:57.Darley July Cup was won Ridden by Adam Kirby,

:20:58. > :21:02.the Clive Cox trained sprinter avenged his defeat to Carravagio

:21:03. > :21:06.at Royal Ascot by seeing off the unbeaten heavy favourite

:21:07. > :21:09.into 3rd place today at Newmarket. Harry Angel's win was a nice

:21:10. > :21:12.birthday present for owner Sheik Mohammed who won his first

:21:13. > :21:20.July Cup. There'll be more sport here on BBC

:21:21. > :21:28.News throughout the evening. From the team here, it is goodbye

:21:29. > :21:31.for now.
