:00:00. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to Wimbledon Sportsday,

:00:24. > :00:30.Injury crisis on centre court - fans miss out on a full afternoons

:00:31. > :00:32.entertainment with Djokovic and Federer - as their

:00:33. > :00:41.The world number one who's under the radar -

:00:42. > :00:47.Angelique Kerber started her bid for the ladies' title.

:00:48. > :00:50.And sadly only one winner - Kyle Edmund comes out on top

:00:51. > :00:58.We hear from Danil Medvedev, the man who produced one

:00:59. > :01:15.I knocked out Stan Wawrinka yesterday, here more from me later.

:01:16. > :01:18.And a monumental crash on the Tour de France -

:01:19. > :01:19.Britain's Mark Cavendish is taken to hospital.

:01:20. > :01:35.World champion Peter Sagan is disqualified.

:01:36. > :01:39.Good evening from Wimbledon on a bright and sunny evening. The

:01:40. > :01:41.weather is set there all week. A dark mood fell over Centre Court -

:01:42. > :01:44.because the fans - felt somewhat short-changed.

:01:45. > :01:48.of the best tickets of the week, Imagine settling in for

:01:49. > :01:50.an afternoon of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer -

:01:51. > :02:07.only to see them complete For Novak Djokovic Wimbledon Centre

:02:08. > :02:15.Court has so often been a happy place. It is Novak Djokovic again.

:02:16. > :02:20.But for this former champion a man once nicknamed the Joker there has

:02:21. > :02:24.not been much laughter of late. Here are this year it is a new Novak

:02:25. > :02:28.Djokovic, a troubled 12 months, down to fourth in the world but what is

:02:29. > :02:34.we can't win it is born a sign that things could be changing. If anyone

:02:35. > :02:38.could understand his tumble from the top of it is Andre Agassi. His new

:02:39. > :02:43.coach once returned from a similar slump and he's here to help Novak

:02:44. > :02:48.Djokovic do the same. Perhaps the best place to start was where things

:02:49. > :02:52.started to go wrong. A shock early exit from Wimbledon last year

:02:53. > :03:03.started to slide but he arrived as the number two seed. Martin Klizan

:03:04. > :03:08.was never really in with a chance. Novak Djokovic winning the first set

:03:09. > :03:12.with no real resistance. As if things were not hard enough and

:03:13. > :03:20.injury hampered the efforts of Martin Klizan. The whitefly came

:03:21. > :03:24.out. Not the way anyone would have hoped the encounter would end. It is

:03:25. > :03:31.just unfortunate, I'm sure he did not want to finish this way because

:03:32. > :03:34.it is Wimbledon, it is a very particular tournament for all of us

:03:35. > :03:38.in the season so I wish you all the best and a good recovery. I will try

:03:39. > :03:45.to rest and recover and prepare for the next game. I have a lot of

:03:46. > :03:49.matches in Eastbourne and a lot of matchplay. So through the two the

:03:50. > :03:54.second round and if used a return to happier times at Wimbledon this

:03:55. > :03:56.could be the first step on way back. -- if he is to return.

:03:57. > :03:59.And incredibly there was a similar story in the next match on centre

:04:00. > :04:02.court where Roger Federer began his bid for an eighth title

:04:03. > :04:05.But the Ukrainian retired with what seemed an injured ankle

:04:06. > :04:21.Some spectators booed at the second early end to a match today.

:04:22. > :04:31.I am joined by the former British number one Annabel Croft. Lovely to

:04:32. > :04:37.have you with us. A slight controversy, do you think that the

:04:38. > :04:41.fans could feel short-changed? It is just disappointing because looking

:04:42. > :04:44.at the order of play it was a fabulous line-up and a chance for

:04:45. > :04:50.people to see one of the greatest icons in the sport in Roger Federer

:04:51. > :04:56.and of course Novak Djokovic and it is very unusual to get to

:04:57. > :05:00.withdrawals on the same day. Just very unfortunate. The only positive

:05:01. > :05:03.thing to save for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer is whoever wins the

:05:04. > :05:09.championship must win seven matches in the course of two weeks. So if

:05:10. > :05:11.either of them try to win these championships Burgess saving that

:05:12. > :05:16.bit of extra energy. But is it better to have time on the grass at

:05:17. > :05:22.this stage of a Grand Slam or to stay fresh? Will I think at this

:05:23. > :05:27.stage they would prepare to stay fresh. Novak Djokovic played in

:05:28. > :05:32.Eastbourne before coming here which is unusual for him. He had four good

:05:33. > :05:36.matches last week in Eastbourne and has gone out on the quality to taste

:05:37. > :05:42.a bit of the action now in Centre Court. So he will feel fresh and

:05:43. > :05:46.quashed Roger Federer also had plenty of tennis in the run-up to

:05:47. > :05:50.Wimbledon. Suffer them it is is being out and soaking up the

:05:51. > :05:57.atmosphere here. Preparing for a match still takes emotional energy.

:05:58. > :06:03.Just disappointing for the fans who would have liked to have seen more

:06:04. > :06:05.of them. And back to Martin Klizan and Alexandr Dolgopolov, do think

:06:06. > :06:11.think is fair that these guys to come to Grand Slam carrying

:06:12. > :06:15.injuries, keep the other guys out on tour and perhaps could have taken

:06:16. > :06:19.their place, out of their Wimbledon places? It is hard to say without

:06:20. > :06:24.knowing exactly the extent of injuries. For the cynics out there,

:06:25. > :06:31.for the first-round losers it is almost equivalent to winning a

:06:32. > :06:37.smaller event. But most players carry a bit of a niggling injury and

:06:38. > :06:43.I think sometimes the advice of the trainers is if they do not feel they

:06:44. > :06:46.will be damaging their body further, stopping the season for the rest of

:06:47. > :06:50.the year, sometimes injuries can loosen up during a match. So

:06:51. > :06:52.difficult to say what was going on exactly but clearly they could only

:06:53. > :07:01.play a certain amount. They will pick up their prize winnings and

:07:02. > :07:06.carry on later in the season. Well we can speculate about Angelique

:07:07. > :07:07.Kerber because you were commentating on her match.

:07:08. > :07:10.Before that there was another treat for the Centre Court crowd today -

:07:11. > :07:12.World number one Angelique Kerber was first out.

:07:13. > :07:15.Her first opponent was the American qualifier Irina Falconi.

:07:16. > :07:28.Rarely has the world number one come to Wimbledon so under the radar.

:07:29. > :07:32.After reaching the summit, her form in the last few months has tumbled.

:07:33. > :07:38.But on paper her first-round match today looked like a gentle start.

:07:39. > :07:43.Her opponent Irina Falconi ranked 247 in the world. And has never been

:07:44. > :07:47.beyond the first round. But after racing to an early lead the familiar

:07:48. > :07:53.errors of the last few months began to creep into her game. Her

:07:54. > :07:58.frustration threaten to undo her good work but her experience got out

:07:59. > :08:05.of trouble. She took the first set but with Irina Falconi now finding

:08:06. > :08:07.her accuracy she was the one needing to rate performance. Angelique

:08:08. > :08:11.Kerber has struggled with the spotlight of the number one ranking

:08:12. > :08:16.but in the second is she showed flashes of the game that got there.

:08:17. > :08:19.She was able to edge it without the need for tie-break wrapping up the

:08:20. > :08:24.match in less than an hour and a half. A patchy performance but this

:08:25. > :08:28.stage it is all about getting through the early rounds unscathed.

:08:29. > :08:31.It is always good to be mentally strong and on Centre Court I need

:08:32. > :08:36.all the memories from last year, they came back and it was amazing.

:08:37. > :08:44.But I was trying to focus on today, on this new match. Angelique Kerber

:08:45. > :08:46.then passes her first test is not entirely convincingly. But she will

:08:47. > :08:56.still hope to find that confidence in form that made the best in world.

:08:57. > :09:04.So Annabel you are in the commentary box for that. The world number one,

:09:05. > :09:09.a little under the radar. You said you thought she was feeling the

:09:10. > :09:12.pressure of Centre Court. It is the first time with singer back out

:09:13. > :09:15.there since reaching the finals and losing last year to Serena Williams.

:09:16. > :09:19.But she's not coming into the event with a lot of match wins or

:09:20. > :09:28.confidence. Many players feel they can possibly beat her. Having said

:09:29. > :09:33.that her opponent today, quite lowly ranked, she gave everyone an

:09:34. > :09:37.absolute thrill. Just that mix of spins and paste, she played a lot of

:09:38. > :09:43.sliced balls, did a lot of different things. She was very creative and

:09:44. > :09:46.the crowd really enjoyed it. So even though the scoreline look

:09:47. > :09:50.straightforward, it was actually a tricky match and she gave her a good

:09:51. > :09:55.run for money. I felt there was a feeling of a burden of expectation

:09:56. > :09:58.from Angelique Kerber. She was walking around slowly in between

:09:59. > :10:01.points and did not look like someone carrying herself as the top seed,

:10:02. > :10:07.the world number one, someone enjoying being out there. It felt a

:10:08. > :10:11.little bit today. You are saying a few women out there feel they could

:10:12. > :10:19.perhaps knock her out. Who is your pick. It is so wide open as it was

:10:20. > :10:24.French Open as well. Then we had this unknown bursting through. But

:10:25. > :10:31.for the women, I'm favouring Karolina Pliskova. She was the

:10:32. > :10:34.winner last year in Eastbourne. She beat Serena Williams and Venus

:10:35. > :10:39.Williams and she has the most wonderful service. A huge serve was

:10:40. > :10:43.up over 200 plus aces during the course of the year. So my money

:10:44. > :10:49.would head towards her. Petra Kvitova, and perhaps Johanna Konta.

:10:50. > :10:53.We were guaranteed to have at least one Brit go through today -

:10:54. > :10:55.that's because compatriots Kyle Edmund and Alex Ward

:10:56. > :10:57.were pitted against each other on a packed court three -

:10:58. > :11:00.a tough call for the crowd - who to cheer for?

:11:01. > :11:07.Joe Lynskey rounds up the British performances on day two.

:11:08. > :11:14.The superstars come to make history here but the underdogs come to make

:11:15. > :11:18.a living. Wimbledon body marks the summit for Alex Ward, three wins to

:11:19. > :11:26.qualify bring a salary and opportunity. 800 places higher in

:11:27. > :11:31.world tennis is Kyle Edmund, but Alex Ward was out to defy the

:11:32. > :11:34.rankings. He's not afraid. Taking the first set, a perfect birthday

:11:35. > :11:39.present for his watching mother. But Kyle Edmund is next in line between

:11:40. > :11:43.-- behind Andy Murray in British tennis and he wants Wimbledon

:11:44. > :11:49.memories of his own. Their rankings suddenly look about right. In this

:11:50. > :11:53.his fifth year at Wimbledon, this is the first taste of winning asset for

:11:54. > :11:58.Kyle Edmund. Getting to grips with grass takes time. In the end he had

:11:59. > :12:04.too much from his former training partner, no first-round exit this

:12:05. > :12:10.year. To get my first win is one of those dreams, those tournaments you

:12:11. > :12:14.always think about as a kid. It has not been a good tournament for me in

:12:15. > :12:19.recent years. So it is nice to get that win. If a first win here is the

:12:20. > :12:22.dream, a first match marks the breakthrough. 20-year-old Katie

:12:23. > :12:30.Boulter was out to make the most of her wild card shot. She's enjoying

:12:31. > :12:35.her first match at Wimbledon. She raced to the first set against the

:12:36. > :12:41.American Christina McHale when the Gallery sensed an upset. But the

:12:42. > :12:44.experience of Katrina McHale has taken to 60 in the world and the

:12:45. > :12:49.endurance of grand slam tennis it was a stretch too far. For all the

:12:50. > :12:54.bravery the experience ends for Katie Boulter until next year.

:12:55. > :12:59.Disappointment in the end for Katie Boulter Budgie has justified her

:13:00. > :13:02.wild card entry. A wild card chance also for Brydan Klein, but the

:13:03. > :13:08.British number six was beaten comfortably in straight sets by his

:13:09. > :13:12.Japanese opponent. No first-round draw for him and so for James Ward,

:13:13. > :13:16.he came to Wimbledon as the lowest ranked player in the draw but his

:13:17. > :13:22.pedigree undermined by a desperate battle with injury. As expected

:13:23. > :13:25.Marcos Baghdatis had too much for him on court 18 but only matches

:13:26. > :13:36.will bring disparate back to his best. -- this Brit.

:13:37. > :13:40.And Annabel you have a lot of experience of playing here and being

:13:41. > :13:44.the British Blair. Kyle Edmund coming through against a fellow

:13:45. > :13:48.Brit, that must've been difficult. It is not easy to play your fellow

:13:49. > :13:52.countryman. If you look at the draw and you are the higher ranked player

:13:53. > :13:59.and today Kyle Edmund was so much higher rank than his opponent, 860

:14:00. > :14:04.the world so in many ways you could see it as a great draw. But there is

:14:05. > :14:11.extra pressure and also extra spice around playing a fellow Brit. And

:14:12. > :14:15.Alex Ward has been hitting a lot with Andy Murray in the past so it

:14:16. > :14:20.took some time to settle down in the match. But then he stormed through.

:14:21. > :14:25.But it is never easy to play against a fellow Brit, I can tell you. Sad

:14:26. > :14:26.to see Alex Ward go and sad we had to pick between them.

:14:27. > :14:29.Let's have a look at what else has been happening at

:14:30. > :14:31.One of the big crowd favourites here,

:14:32. > :14:34.Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina needed seven, yes seven

:14:35. > :14:36.match points to beat Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis.

:14:37. > :14:38.Del Potro, no stranger to marathon matches,

:14:39. > :14:40.played that epic Olympic final against Andy Murray last year

:14:41. > :14:43.remember, and eventually won in four sets and faces Ernests Gulbis

:14:44. > :14:51.But there was plenty of controversy on court 14 earlier

:14:52. > :15:00.where Australia's Bernard Tomic seemed to be under the weather

:15:01. > :15:03.in his straight sets defeat to Mischa Zverev of Germany.

:15:04. > :15:05.Tomic called for what seemed like a medical time-out

:15:06. > :15:09.But afterwards he seemed to suggest that there might not have been

:15:10. > :15:22.I just tried, there was definitely a mental issue out there. I just tried

:15:23. > :15:30.to break a bit of momentum but could not find any rhythm. I was not

:15:31. > :15:34.mentally and physically there with my mental state to perform. I do not

:15:35. > :15:39.know why, but I felt a little bit bored out there. So to be honest

:15:40. > :15:46.with you. So I tried at the end I managed to win the set. But it was

:15:47. > :15:51.too late. What a strange press conference. To say you're bored,

:15:52. > :15:55.lots of people say you get ?35,000 for going out on a first round and

:15:56. > :15:58.he should give it back for not trying, and saying he did not

:15:59. > :16:01.respect tennis than fact. Huge controversy about this press

:16:02. > :16:05.conference and it should rumble on. I'm sure in many years to come he

:16:06. > :16:10.might look back at those comments and feel extremely embarrassed about

:16:11. > :16:13.it. He also went on to say that he just wanted to play tennis for the

:16:14. > :16:17.next ten years just to earn the money and then never have to work in

:16:18. > :16:23.his life. He was also asked if you'd like to give the money to a charity

:16:24. > :16:27.he's said if you ask Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer if they will then

:16:28. > :16:29.maybe I will as well. He is a complex character and not the first

:16:30. > :16:33.time he's coming to be is problematic areas with the press. He

:16:34. > :16:38.had this trim and press come down on him like a tonne of bricks, he had a

:16:39. > :16:43.difficult relationship with an overbearing father who at times in

:16:44. > :16:46.his matches he has asked the umpires to remove from matches. So quite a

:16:47. > :16:49.lot of history going on with him. I think is a complex individual but

:16:50. > :16:53.quite clearly if you cannot get up and get excited for Wimbledon,

:16:54. > :16:56.arguably the greatest tournament in the world, my question is should

:16:57. > :17:01.really be up there playing tennis because clearly you do not really

:17:02. > :17:05.enjoy it. I think he needs to go away and think about how much he

:17:06. > :17:10.really wants to play tennis. He has let himself down and also the people

:17:11. > :17:20.paying money and buying tickets to come and watch. So a few eyebrows

:17:21. > :17:22.raised in the media room. Thank you so much.

:17:23. > :17:24.One of the stories of day one was Luxembourg's Mandy Minella

:17:25. > :17:27.who played her first round match against Italian veteran

:17:28. > :17:31.Francesca Schiavone while four months pregnant.

:17:32. > :17:34.Minella is also playing the doubles this week.

:17:35. > :17:37.But today she posted a lovely picture on Twitter of her husband

:17:38. > :17:40.and coach Tim Sommer kneeling in front of her at one

:17:41. > :17:44.of the Wimbledon courts and kissing her stomach.

:17:45. > :17:46.Minella said that this will be her last tournament

:17:47. > :17:56.Late on the opening day the unknown 21 year old Danill Medvedev produced

:17:57. > :17:59.the biggest upset of the first round, knocking out the three time

:18:00. > :18:03.One year ago the Russian wasn't at Wimbledon -

:18:04. > :18:07.beaten in qualifying by Britain's hero of 12 months ago Marcus Willis.

:18:08. > :18:15.John Watson's been finding out what a difference a year makes.

:18:16. > :18:23.If anyone would tell me this one year ago I would not believe them.

:18:24. > :18:26.That I would be world number three, beating world number three on Centre

:18:27. > :18:29.Court at Wimbledon. I'm really happy with how I played and I managed to

:18:30. > :18:36.win such a match. To have a first Grand Slam victory on Centre Court,

:18:37. > :18:40.especially Wimbledon, is amazing. Tell us what the atmosphere was like

:18:41. > :18:45.on Centre Court, it is a very special place. And a lovely moment

:18:46. > :18:49.after the match for you bent down to kiss the turf. I felt people were

:18:50. > :18:54.cheering for me a lot, some Russians were there, I was a bit surprised.

:18:55. > :18:59.When I was leading the crowd went crazy and maybe that was the best

:19:00. > :19:04.feeling I ever had in my life. And so after the match I just decided to

:19:05. > :19:08.kiss the grass. I knew I could play well on grass and after of course

:19:09. > :19:13.beating Stan you must play better than just good and I did that

:19:14. > :19:17.yesterday. What you make of your opponent in the next round, the

:19:18. > :19:24.Belgian? I have seen him a lot in other tournaments and he is a great

:19:25. > :19:28.player. He beat Tommy Haas who beat Roger Federer, so he is a very good

:19:29. > :19:30.player. I'm just going to try to do my best to get through the next

:19:31. > :19:32.round. Mark Cavendish has been taken

:19:33. > :19:35.to hospital after a serious crash at the end of the fourth stage

:19:36. > :19:38.of the Tour de France when he collided with world champion

:19:39. > :19:46.Peter Sagan. Peter Sagan has been thrown off the

:19:47. > :19:50.tour as a result. In cycling it can take just a

:19:51. > :19:55.fraction of a second four-year world to come tumbling down. Mark

:19:56. > :19:59.Cavendish had his eyes on adding to his dirty career stage wins but in

:20:00. > :20:04.the chaos that can swell around the sprinters as they search for the

:20:05. > :20:08.line, he tangled with world champion Peter Sagan. He was left lying in

:20:09. > :20:14.the gutter whilst Peter Sagan finished second. He apologised but

:20:15. > :20:17.it was not enough as organisers kicked the Slovak out of the draw.

:20:18. > :20:22.Little comfort for Mark Cavendish, he will -- he got back on his bike

:20:23. > :20:25.and cross the line but he said he was not optimistic of being able to

:20:26. > :20:28.continue the race. He went to hospital for stitches in a finger

:20:29. > :20:33.and to check his shoulder which he fears has suffered damage to a

:20:34. > :20:36.ligament. Before that skirmish overall race leader Gareth Thomas

:20:37. > :20:40.got caught up in a pile-up. But he escaped with just cuts and bruises.

:20:41. > :20:42.And he will keep the yellow jersey thanks to rules giving him the same

:20:43. > :20:52.time as the stage winner. Horrible to see that crash. And this

:20:53. > :20:59.was the reaction from Mark Cavendish after the race. I was bleeding a

:21:00. > :21:06.lot, and my shoulder, I had a previous shoulder injury and it is

:21:07. > :21:11.just been set back, I do not know if I snapped the ligament. I'm not a

:21:12. > :21:20.doctor, but from the feeling I have, I'm not optimistic. And the incident

:21:21. > :21:28.itself, what happened? Just Peter Sagan came over. And he came to

:21:29. > :21:37.apologise first I get on with Peter well, but I do not get, if he came

:21:38. > :21:41.across as one thing with the elbow, I'm not a fan of his putting his

:21:42. > :21:47.elbow into me like that. But like I said I get on with Peter. A crash is
