:27:07. > :27:13.It did not matter who I was playing. I was very focused on everything.
:27:13. > :27:17.Being all British was obviously very nice for the country. Because
:27:17. > :27:26.the British were not going to lose. I think I was the favourite because
:27:26. > :27:31.my career started young and I was experienced. She was young and
:27:31. > :27:36.attractive and she was about 20 at the time had the schoolgirls loved
:27:36. > :27:42.her and that was great because that took the spotlight away. To talk us
:27:42. > :27:50.through the magic will start we had a couple -- talk us through the
:27:50. > :28:00.start. I was five points away from winning. You do not feel positive
:28:00. > :28:04.until the last ball is struck. I had an ankle injury earlier in the
:28:04. > :28:10.year and it was a bit slippery on the court and it took away my
:28:10. > :28:20.concentration. Angela of course is a very shrewd player and took
:28:20. > :28:21.
:28:21. > :28:29.advantage. But for me, that turned it around. She is in trouble.
:28:29. > :28:36.slipped and lost concentration. It didn't bother me particularly.
:28:36. > :28:46.that these turning point? Well, she thought it was but I did not think
:28:46. > :28:50.
:28:50. > :28:57.it made any difference to me. A difficult match for both girls to
:28:57. > :29:03.play and certainly a worthy champion, Angela Mortimer. What did
:29:03. > :29:08.it feel like to be a Wimbledon champion? Well, to start with,
:29:08. > :29:13.after a couple of weeks of absolute attention, it was nothing but
:29:13. > :29:20.relief that it was all over. I could go back to living a normal
:29:21. > :29:25.life. I could go to bed and sleep! I found out actually the
:29:26. > :29:32.opportunities do not come fast and furious for the next few years. I
:29:32. > :29:38.was distracted, well, by boyfriends, for want of a better word. A life
:29:38. > :29:42.outside of the tennis life I had been living. I suppose I always
:29:42. > :29:52.felt I could see that slipping away, but I never would achieve these
:29:52. > :29:53.
:29:53. > :29:59.heights again. It has been 50 years since... I am afraid it is! Will we
:29:59. > :30:05.ever see bat again, a British or final -- see that again, an all-
:30:05. > :30:11.British final at Wimbledon? I am not sure. I am glad to have been a
:30:11. > :30:21.part of that. Never say never. I am sure something will happen when we
:30:21. > :30:34.
:30:34. > :30:42.It is the winners they remember. Those were the days. Angela's coach
:30:42. > :30:48.was my coach. Looking around here, it is a very special year at the
:30:48. > :30:55.club, celebrating 125 years of the tournament. It has changed a lot in
:30:55. > :31:00.that time. The venue has changed. The roof on Centre Court. The first
:31:00. > :31:09.tournament was not actually played here at the All-England Club. It
:31:09. > :31:13.Wimbledon is the most grand, Moss tradition of the world's tennis
:31:13. > :31:17.venue, each year tens of thousands pour through the turnstiles helping
:31:17. > :31:20.to make it one of the great sporting events but 125 years ago
:31:20. > :31:30.it was very different. In fact the tournament wasn't even held here.
:31:30. > :31:39.Taxi! Can you take me to Walpole Road please. Thank you. In 1877 the
:31:39. > :31:44.first Wimbledon tournament was held a mile away from this current home.
:31:44. > :31:48.There you go fella. Cheers. The original site belonging to
:31:48. > :31:53.Wimbledon high school for girls. A few courts are all that remains of
:31:53. > :31:57.the little piece of tennis history. The site seems relatively small,
:31:57. > :32:03.and I still find it difficult to think that upwards of 2,000 people
:32:03. > :32:06.came to watch the Championships here. I had originally suspected
:32:06. > :32:11.that perhaps we bought part of the club rather than all of it, but no,
:32:11. > :32:15.indeed this is the whole thing. It is amazing. What else from the
:32:15. > :32:19.original site back in the late 1800s still exists? Well the
:32:19. > :32:23.pavilion itself is still here, and we use that for changing rooms.
:32:23. > :32:27.These two courts were two of the courts, numbers two and three
:32:27. > :32:34.courts, in the original club, and over on that side, we have three
:32:34. > :32:37.tennis courts on the site of what was courts six and seven. Until
:32:37. > :32:41.2000 we had grass courts but ta those are very expensive to
:32:41. > :32:47.maintain, and in fact now we have an astro turf hockey pitch on what
:32:47. > :32:52.was the site of the original Centre Court. The first tournament was
:32:52. > :32:57.held at Walpole road in 1888 -- 1877 and was organise niceed by the
:32:57. > :33:01.croquet club. Humble beginnings. The croquet lawns needed to be flat
:33:01. > :33:07.and smooth for the balls to run true. They had a pony roller. A
:33:07. > :33:10.roller pulled by a pony. The pony wore shoes. When the roller broke,
:33:10. > :33:14.there was consternation, they decided thaid they would need to
:33:14. > :33:21.hold a tennis tournament to raise the funds. The entry was very small.
:33:21. > :33:28.Only about 32 players. Spencer Gore won the tournament. Gore lived
:33:28. > :33:33.locally and cycled to the ground we are told. Not only was the style of
:33:33. > :33:38.play very different to what we are used to, but the fashion of players,
:33:38. > :33:45.wearing knickerbockers and bow ties is unlikely to be seen again.
:33:45. > :33:51.have to remember that tennis began in a Victorian age, where the
:33:51. > :33:55.gentlemen wore bustle dresses. The gentleman wore long trousers or
:33:55. > :34:00.knicker bobg -- knickerbockers, it was a different world. To imagine
:34:00. > :34:08.the scenes we see today would have been impossibleable then. It came
:34:08. > :34:12.from very small beginnings. As the popularity of tennis grew, they
:34:12. > :34:15.couldn't cope with the numbers. crowds were impossible to control,
:34:15. > :34:21.the police were worried about it, so they searched for a new ground.
:34:21. > :34:26.Found this one, which was an open field site. Adjacent to Wimbledon
:34:26. > :34:29.park, and the move was made with some trepidation and they built
:34:30. > :34:36.this Centre Court to seat 14,000 people, and people said my goodness,
:34:36. > :34:43.nobody is going to fill those, it will be a white elephant. It
:34:43. > :34:47.wasn't! No, it really wasn't. This is a tournament with a rich history.
:34:47. > :34:52.This is a magnificent venue, but they haven't stopped yet. They will
:34:52. > :34:55.improve it still over the next few years. We will head back to Centre
:34:56. > :35:01.Court to see the presentation but I want to take this moment to high
:35:01. > :35:07.light a programme coming up next week to pay tribute to one of
:35:07. > :35:12.sport's all time greats Seve Ballesteros. There is many ways to
:35:12. > :35:16.play golf. You can build your own course with your imagination.
:35:16. > :35:20.inspired me how much passion he put into the game. How much he wanted

:35:25. > :35:29.is there for one run, he has a great sense of humour. I remember
:35:29. > :35:37.him as a vibrant character. never talk about the worse, but I
:35:37. > :35:42.am convinced he knew. Because of him, we golf in Spain. Yes, seeing
