0:01:53 > 0:01:57Wimbledon, and there is the proof! It will be the hottest day of the

0:01:57 > 0:02:01year today, and this is the hottest ticket in town, but you have the

0:02:01 > 0:02:11best seats in the house. Welcome to Wimbledon, the men's

0:02:11 > 0:02:11

0:02:11 > 0:02:51Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

0:02:51 > 0:02:57single final, Andy Murray versus Minister of Great Britain. Franklin

0:02:57 > 0:03:05Roosevelt was President of the United States. Jesse Owens won four

0:03:05 > 0:03:12gold medals at the Berlin Olympics. King Edward VIII abdicated. Cars

0:03:12 > 0:03:22looked like this. Aeroplanes looked like this. Telephones looked like

0:03:22 > 0:03:29this. Welcome to 1936. That year Fred Perry won the last of his three

0:03:29 > 0:03:37Wimbledon crowns. Since then, 17 Wimbledon Men's Singles titles have

0:03:37 > 0:03:44been contested. United States lead the way with 27 wins. Australia are

0:03:44 > 0:03:53next with 16 victories. Then come Sweden with seven, and Switzerland

0:03:53 > 0:03:57with seven. Germany have four, and Spain have three. The remaining six

0:03:57 > 0:04:03titles are shared amongst six countries including Croatia and

0:04:03 > 0:04:11Serbia. From Fred Perry to the present, home fans have experienced

0:04:11 > 0:04:1777 years of expectation, 77 years of close calls, 77 years of pain. Now,

0:04:17 > 0:04:22can the man from Dunblane in his seventh Grand Slam final prevents

0:04:22 > 0:04:32the world number one from winning his seventh Grand Slam title? Will

0:04:32 > 0:04:34

0:04:34 > 0:04:44the man who has won at Wimbledon win Wimbledon? And finally end

0:04:44 > 0:04:51

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Britain's 77 year wait for a Men's Singles at Wimbledon champion?

0:04:54 > 0:05:00If Andy Murray wins today on the seventh day of the seventh month,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05the weighting will be over, and I'm sure Fred would approve. His legend

0:05:05 > 0:05:11is guaranteed but there is history to be made, created, rewritten. For

0:05:11 > 0:05:19that tough and today, Andy may need to take inspiration from the man

0:05:19 > 0:05:25cast in bronze, as on the other side of the net he faces a man of steel.

0:05:26 > 0:05:35He has travelled from another galaxy. Across an ocean of stars. He

0:05:36 > 0:05:38

0:05:38 > 0:05:46has arrived to change planet Earth. He walks among us but he is not like

0:05:46 > 0:05:56us. He is not human, he is out of this world. Part man, part supreme

0:05:56 > 0:06:07

0:06:07 > 0:06:12being, he will never give in. Novak Djokovic is the man of steel.

0:06:12 > 0:06:17contest. They first met as 11-year-olds, now they're old

0:06:17 > 0:06:24jewellery takes to the greatest danger of sport for the most coveted

0:06:24 > 0:06:28prize of all. Everybody wants to be here today as Andy stands on the

0:06:28 > 0:06:38brink of history, trying to ignore the burden of expectations, but it

0:06:38 > 0:06:48will be hard to do. It is the final that was predicted and wanted,

0:06:48 > 0:06:51

0:06:51 > 0:06:57Djokovic versus Murray, world number one versus world number two. Expect

0:06:58 > 0:07:03more physical and mental challenges today. That honours board is where

0:07:03 > 0:07:09they want their names to be etched later this afternoon, Djokovic is

0:07:09 > 0:07:13already on it from 2011, Murray came close last year but Roger Federer

0:07:13 > 0:07:21won for a seventh time and of course the last Briton to win was Fred

0:07:21 > 0:07:28Perry in the 1930s. And that is what today is all about, the challenge

0:07:28 > 0:07:35cup. It will be lifted by either a 26-year-old Serbian or a 26-year-old

0:07:35 > 0:07:44Scotsman. It is made of silvergilt, standing 18 inches high, and intend

0:07:44 > 0:07:48tennis terms it is priceless. That is what they are playing for. They

0:07:48 > 0:07:53have been warming up, and Andy Murray has had some anxious moments

0:07:53 > 0:08:00en route to the final. He has been tested but he has come through and

0:08:00 > 0:08:04he says he is in a better place. The players have had very different

0:08:04 > 0:08:07preparations, they are getting ready for this match and Andy Murray

0:08:07 > 0:08:14arrives for the final physically and mentally stronger, and a firm crowd

0:08:14 > 0:08:20favourite. They have been on the practice court, I am here on Henman

0:08:20 > 0:08:30Hill with Tim, three times champion Boris Becker, and you have been

0:08:30 > 0:08:32

0:08:32 > 0:08:38geeing up these fans! It is a great atmosphere, you can only imagine

0:08:38 > 0:08:44what it will be like on the Centre Court in just over an hour. This is

0:08:44 > 0:08:50what your Hill has done for the experience as well! Yes, when the

0:08:50 > 0:08:55gates open there is a surge of fans coming to take their place and they

0:08:55 > 0:09:02will need plenty of fluids and some cream, and there will be a lot of

0:09:02 > 0:09:07nervous tension. Boris, you have been there on finals day, how tense

0:09:07 > 0:09:15is it? Extremely, and the big question is who can control their

0:09:15 > 0:09:20nerves and their concentration. Both men have been there before. Paul

0:09:20 > 0:09:25Sabine Lisicki yesterday was nervous, she couldn't hit a ball

0:09:25 > 0:09:30straight, that is what it does to you, but these men are cool as

0:09:30 > 0:09:35cucumbers. It is not their first Grand Slam finals, they know what to

0:09:35 > 0:09:41do. Andy Murray is here for his second time. He is in a better

0:09:41 > 0:09:46place, having been there last time. I think we will see a completely

0:09:46 > 0:09:50different Andy Murray to one month ago. At this stage he played Roger

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Federer and he had played a good first set but he had never won Grand

0:09:55 > 0:10:03Slam before and I think he was overtaken by that fact. He won't

0:10:03 > 0:10:09lose because he is not ready for it. If he is going to be the man that

0:10:09 > 0:10:14can win the last point, it will be because he has played better.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19had some anxious moments en route to the final but he knows he has to be

0:10:19 > 0:10:24at its best today. With the upsets we had in the early stages with

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal out by the first Wednesday, Murray has

0:10:27 > 0:10:32talked about the added expectation that he has got to get through to

0:10:32 > 0:10:36the final or else it will be a poor tournament and I think that

0:10:36 > 0:10:40reflected in the way he played against Fernando Verdasco. I think

0:10:40 > 0:10:46now he has got through to the final, I feel that psychologically

0:10:46 > 0:10:50deep down this was the match he was looking for. As Boris said, the

0:10:50 > 0:10:55pressure of that match 12 months ago against Roger Federer was even

0:10:55 > 0:11:01greater than it was today, so too have had that experience in his

0:11:01 > 0:11:08locker, there won't be any hidden surprises. He has won Olympic gold

0:11:08 > 0:11:12on the same court, I really do feel that today is his day. He won the

0:11:12 > 0:11:19Olympic gold and the U.S. Open, but there is something special about

0:11:19 > 0:11:26Wimbledon, you felt that. We all did. He has not lost across

0:11:26 > 0:11:36tournament since the last Wimbledon final. We have your match point

0:11:36 > 0:11:38

0:11:38 > 0:11:45here. Two this young teenager from West Germany, able to overcome Ivan

0:11:45 > 0:11:50Lendl. He will be on the sidelines today, sporting his man and Andy

0:11:50 > 0:12:00Murray. He knows what it was like. That was against Stefan Edberg, the

0:12:00 > 0:12:02

0:12:03 > 0:12:08great Swede. You had some great rivalries, didn't you? Yes, he beat

0:12:08 > 0:12:12me twice. It brings out the best and the worst in new. There is no hiding

0:12:12 > 0:12:22place. It is the most beautiful court when you play well, and the

0:12:22 > 0:12:27

0:12:27 > 0:12:34most lonely place if you play badly. Tim, you had Hen-mania, you know

0:12:34 > 0:12:40what it is like. Yes, people still ask me to this day, how did you play

0:12:40 > 0:12:46with that pressure and expectation? It is self-inflicted, and Andy knows

0:12:46 > 0:12:51how to deal with it. To me, the crowd have a part to play. When you

0:12:51 > 0:12:55watch the Del Potro semi-final, he was really playing the crowd,

0:12:55 > 0:13:03sitting down at the side on the back of the court and the crowd lifted

0:13:03 > 0:13:10him. I think it got underneath Djokovic's skin a little bit. That

0:13:10 > 0:13:19could get Andy over the line. crowd is a big factor, isn't it?

0:13:19 > 0:13:24can make a difference, especially when you are down a set, and it does

0:13:24 > 0:13:33affect anybody. Once you have to play against a tough opponent and

0:13:33 > 0:13:39the crowd, it is more difficult. I'm sure the 15,000, most of them will

0:13:39 > 0:13:48be supporting Andy Murray. They will hear the cheering from here. Let's

0:13:48 > 0:13:55get a further feel for the atmosphere because Rishi is out and

0:13:55 > 0:13:58about. Where are you? I am on the Hill, whether you call it Henman

0:13:59 > 0:14:06Hill all Murray Mound, it doesn't matter, this is the best place to

0:14:06 > 0:14:13watch today. I have found some fans who have come to talk. Where have

0:14:13 > 0:14:23you come from today? I am from Kingston, but originally Edinburgh.

0:14:23 > 0:14:29What is the mood on the Hill? Do you believe in him today? Everybody is

0:14:29 > 0:14:37loving it, there is no stiff upper lip here, everybody is loving it.

0:14:37 > 0:14:44Serbian flags on the Hill today. I have a good feeling about it.

0:14:44 > 0:14:50girls have come from Edinburgh, look at that, Andy Murray's face! Is

0:14:50 > 0:14:55today finally the day? I don't want to jinx it, but fingers crossed. We

0:14:55 > 0:15:03started queueing at four o'clock this morning and it took eight

0:15:03 > 0:15:12hours. What about you, where did you come from? I have come from Kent and

0:15:12 > 0:15:17I am very optimistic. Why?There is just a good feeling in the air.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22You've been ball boy to Andy Murray here a couple of times? Yeah I ball

0:15:22 > 0:15:26boyed his first defeat on Centre Court against Nalband ian and then

0:15:26 > 0:15:31his second defeat, so I had to retire. I'm not on the courted

0:15:31 > 0:15:37today. It's going to be a great day. All backing Murray. Let's have a

0:15:37 > 0:15:41practice of what it's like if Murray wins today. How will you cheer for

0:15:41 > 0:15:47him? They are certainly up for it. They're certainly all up for it on

0:15:47 > 0:15:51the Hill here as well. Wonderful atmosphere. I just don't think that

0:15:51 > 0:15:57a lot of people realise just what it would mean for a British man to win

0:15:57 > 0:16:03Wimbledon. Well, you know, Fred Perry... Take your time. How long

0:16:03 > 0:16:09have I got! Fred Perry was an amazing champion. Winning in 1934,

0:16:09 > 0:16:1335 and 36, he was one of the legends of the game. I would like to hear

0:16:14 > 0:16:18his name talked about less if there was someone that could win now. This

0:16:18 > 0:16:21is Andy's chance. I think, I really do believe it, I said before the

0:16:21 > 0:16:31tournament that I felt this was his year. It's going to be a battle out

0:16:31 > 0:16:34there. It's hot today. Fingers crossed he's going to get it done.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37CHEERING Also Boris, it was interesting that

0:16:37 > 0:16:41Djokovic, we talk about the expectation of Murray, Djokovic says

0:16:42 > 0:16:45pressure is a privilege. What a great line. Very good line. Coming

0:16:45 > 0:16:48from a man that's been handling the world's pressure on the tennis

0:16:48 > 0:16:52better than anybody the last two-and-a-half years, otherwise he

0:16:52 > 0:16:55wouldn't be number one. That's what it's all about. You have to enjoy

0:16:55 > 0:17:00playing a Wimbledon final. You have to enjoy being put in a spot where

0:17:00 > 0:17:04you can make a difference. You can rewrite history and if you're afraid

0:17:04 > 0:17:09of it, you're never going to win it. You have to embrace it. I mentioned

0:17:09 > 0:17:12at the top that Centre Court is the hottest ticket in town. Many famous

0:17:13 > 0:17:17faces will be there. Many from the world of sport. Andy Murray is the

0:17:17 > 0:17:22US Open tennis champion. But the US Open golf champion is there, justice

0:17:22 > 0:17:26rose. He's been talking to Garry. -- Justin Rose.

0:17:26 > 0:17:32You've had to cope with big match nerves. What do you think Andy is

0:17:32 > 0:17:35feeling at the moment? I think he's going to be undeniably nervous, but

0:17:35 > 0:17:38all great athletes understand eventually that being nervous

0:17:38 > 0:17:42doesn't mean poor performance. It's the years of practice and training

0:17:42 > 0:17:45that come through on a day like today. Can you actually practice

0:17:45 > 0:17:48controlling the nerves? I think so. It just comes with experience. You

0:17:48 > 0:17:52have to put yourself in the situation. You have to learn to

0:17:52 > 0:17:59handle it. There's no substitute for it. Obviously, there's been six

0:17:59 > 0:18:04Grand Slam finals now. I think all that maturity will pay off today.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06The all-important part, congratulations on what you've done

0:18:06 > 0:18:09recently, can you relate to maybe serving, match point, standing

0:18:09 > 0:18:14baseline, Royal Box and it's for the championship, relate it to golf.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17That's the moment you dream of. That's the childhood dream. You're

0:18:17 > 0:18:21living out the moment you've dreamed of. It's important in sport to stay

0:18:21 > 0:18:26in the moment as much as you can. We talk about one point at a time, I've

0:18:26 > 0:18:29been reading the papers this morning and Novak and Andy saying how

0:18:30 > 0:18:33important each point will be, but that moment where you're tossing the

0:18:33 > 0:18:37ball and serving, I couldn't imagine, it's a different sport for

0:18:37 > 0:18:42me, it's all about commitment. did it. The British Lions did it, is

0:18:42 > 0:18:46Andy Murray going to do it? Absolutely. I really hope for him.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50We're all pulling for him. It will be the start of a great summer.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54Thank you very much. . Thanks for having me. He'll enjoy the drama

0:18:54 > 0:18:58that will unfold on that famous court through the afternoon. The

0:18:58 > 0:19:06build up continues here. Less than 50 minutes now an the two will be

0:19:06 > 0:19:14walking out onto court. This is what we've got coming up: We hear from

0:19:14 > 0:19:19Andy Murray, who's one match away from history.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23I am desperate to win. I love wing. I -- winning. I train extremely

0:19:23 > 0:19:28hard. I think people have started to see that side of me and accepting me

0:19:28 > 0:19:35for what I am. We've also spoken to Novak Djokovic,

0:19:35 > 0:19:39who is striving for a second Wimbledon title. I'm dreaming of it,

0:19:39 > 0:19:45of course. This is the biggest trophy in sport. I'm going to give

0:19:45 > 0:19:49everything I have, whatever it takes. They are rivals for the title

0:19:49 > 0:19:54today and we take a special look at those battles that make sport so

0:19:54 > 0:19:59special. I'm not here to have a cup of tea.

0:19:59 > 0:20:08I'm here because I want to beat you. My natural competitive instincts get

0:20:08 > 0:20:11better if I don't like you. We will speak to Boris about those

0:20:11 > 0:20:14rivalries. He certainly doesn't need a cup of tea up here. It's

0:20:14 > 0:20:17absolutely scorching, that's for sure. The build up continues now.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Over the past few months, we've been spending a lot of time

0:20:22 > 0:20:26behind-the-scenes with Andy Murray and his team. Just last month, I

0:20:26 > 0:20:36went down to join Andy, his girlfriend, Kim and a couple of very

0:20:36 > 0:20:41

0:20:41 > 0:20:45This is Maggie. That's Rusty. Maggie was named after Maggie May the Rod

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Stewart song. Job is it to walk them and feed them? Whose job is it,

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Andy? I like the responsibility of having them during training or

0:20:53 > 0:20:57during Wimbledon for example. They're a good - Andy is not always

0:20:58 > 0:21:01good at waking up in the morning. He is better since we've had them. I

0:21:01 > 0:21:05can always send the dogs in to jump on his face. He wakes up with a

0:21:05 > 0:21:12smile. Let's let them off now. He will be desperate to bomb round.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17Don't run off then? This one does. She chases anything that moves. He's

0:21:17 > 0:21:19generally really good. He comes back. In San Jose you were launched

0:21:20 > 0:21:24into the limelight because suddenly Andy wins a tournament out of

0:21:25 > 0:21:29nowhere and it's all over the news. It was a great week. We had so much

0:21:29 > 0:21:33fun. I went away with him, I thought oh, that's fine, because he's never

0:21:33 > 0:21:39going to win the tournament and I will be back for school. I kept

0:21:39 > 0:21:42saying to mum, " You have to call in and say I've got the winter vomiting

0:21:42 > 0:21:46virus." But it ended up on the front of the newspapers. I was busted. It

0:21:46 > 0:21:50was weird the few days that followed because we had quite a few people

0:21:50 > 0:21:55following us around and people turning up at my school and things.

0:21:55 > 0:22:00But it's quietened down since then. For the most part they leave us

0:22:00 > 0:22:04alone. I think we're really boring. The last few Wimbledons and stuff,

0:22:04 > 0:22:09like a few of the photographers have waited outside the house and then,

0:22:09 > 0:22:13to see what we're doing on the off days. After the fifth or sixth dog

0:22:13 > 0:22:23walk they were like, this is a waste of time. Thef don't come back any

0:22:23 > 0:22:30

0:22:31 > 0:22:37COMMENTATOR: championship point. Championship number seven for Roger

0:22:37 > 0:22:41Federer. He's done himself proud. But it's a

0:22:41 > 0:22:49fourth Grand Slam final where he hasn't won.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51I'm going to try this and it's not going to be easy.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55APPLAUSE Normally when you lose a match, you

0:22:55 > 0:22:58can go back to the locker room and you're upset and I've seen loads of

0:22:58 > 0:23:01great players in the locker room crying after matches. But you don't

0:23:01 > 0:23:06always see it in front of the crowd. But then obviously, when you lose in

0:23:06 > 0:23:10a final like that, you have to speak, then it's tough sometimes to

0:23:10 > 0:23:15hold the emotions together. immediate aftermath wasn't pretty.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19No, it was bad. Do you do? Do you want to lock yourself away?

0:23:19 > 0:23:24Normally, I go quiet. I don't speak much. But after that match, like, I

0:23:24 > 0:23:27just cried for so long. All of us on the side lines watching him go

0:23:27 > 0:23:31through Wimbledon, it was heart breaking. It was really exciting and

0:23:31 > 0:23:35heart breaking at the same time. The Olympics was so wonderful for the

0:23:35 > 0:23:38whole country, not just us. That was a great antidote I think to what

0:23:39 > 0:23:42happened at Wimbledon. Then the US Open just blew all of that out of

0:23:42 > 0:23:51the water. It was so amazing. I still get goose bumps thinking about

0:23:51 > 0:23:54COMMENTATOR: Murray for the US Open. It's out! And Andy Murray has won

0:23:54 > 0:24:00his first Grand Slam. I wasn't bouncing off the walls. I couldn't

0:24:00 > 0:24:05sleep. You slept on the plane on the way back. Because you had champagne.

0:24:05 > 0:24:10Everyone asks, " Has Andy got drunk? I only say the only time was on the

0:24:10 > 0:24:17way back to the US Open. I fell asleep and I I woke up and he had a

0:24:17 > 0:24:22few glasses of champagne. He said, " I went to the toilet to brush my

0:24:22 > 0:24:26teeth and I used face cream." Shows you the lightweight. I dreamt after

0:24:26 > 0:24:32Wimbledon that I'd won Wimbledon and then I woke up and I hnts. I was

0:24:32 > 0:24:38gutted. -- I hadn't. I was gutted. After the US Open, I was sleeping on

0:24:38 > 0:24:42the couch and dreamt that I'd lost and I woke up. Then when I realised

0:24:42 > 0:24:46I'd won, I think that was when it started to sink in. I started to

0:24:46 > 0:24:49enjoy it a bit more. We had a lot of friends and family came round, a lot

0:24:49 > 0:24:57of people that I'd worked with, coaches that I'd worked with all

0:24:57 > 0:25:00through my career and that was good. Well, that celebration will pale

0:25:00 > 0:25:04into insignificance if he wins today, because so many friends and

0:25:04 > 0:25:10family will want to be there, including Judy Murray, who's there.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13She's not looking nervous, but I'm sure she'lling feeling it. Sir Chris

0:25:13 > 0:25:17Hoy, he knows what it's like to perform under pressure. Andy says

0:25:17 > 0:25:24winning the Olympic gold was the highlight of his career so far. But

0:25:24 > 0:25:29I think that may change if he wins today. So, everyone arriving.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33Everybody wants to be here. I think that chat I had with Andy shows

0:25:33 > 0:25:39exactly what it means to him. And how affected he gets by it all.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43Absolutely. I think it was not just because you did it, I thought it was

0:25:43 > 0:25:47a fantastic piece because a lot of people got to see the Andy Murray

0:25:47 > 0:25:50that I've known for a long time. He's a great person to be around.

0:25:50 > 0:25:55He's got a good sense of humour, but most importantly, from his

0:25:55 > 0:25:59professional point of view, he trains phenomenally hard. He's

0:25:59 > 0:26:04incredibly committed and dedicated to the job. All that effort is for

0:26:04 > 0:26:07days like today, to go up against the the best player in the world for

0:26:07 > 0:26:11the biggest prize in our sport and hopefully get across the finish

0:26:11 > 0:26:15line. That final last year, when he was in traerz, you learn more from

0:26:15 > 0:26:19losses -- tears, you learn more from losses than from wins. You learn how

0:26:19 > 0:26:25much they hurt you. You learn how much you care about the game. I

0:26:25 > 0:26:28think it made him train even harder, focus even harder. He may have

0:26:28 > 0:26:34remembered that moment of pain and misery and didn't want to feel it

0:26:34 > 0:26:39again. He's got to change his sleeping habits. He's dreaming the

0:26:39 > 0:26:45winning Wimbledon and he lost it. And he's dreaming of winning the US

0:26:45 > 0:26:50Open and he won it -- losing the US Open and he won it - what is is

0:26:50 > 0:26:53this. Going to move down to Centre Court and we join Phill Jones who is

0:26:53 > 0:27:00with two men who know Murray very well indeed.

0:27:00 > 0:27:06Yes, the atmosphere is building. I'm alongside John Lloyd and Mark MEPPy

0:27:06 > 0:27:13his former coach. Mark -- Mark Petchey, his former coach. What do

0:27:13 > 0:27:18you think is going through his mind? I think he's on a very low key

0:27:18 > 0:27:22court. I saw him taking a car, came back up at gate 15. He didn't want

0:27:22 > 0:27:26to come through the crowd. At the moment he's trying to keep a routine

0:27:26 > 0:27:29and play down the situation. He's well aware of the weight of history

0:27:29 > 0:27:34on his shoulders today. You have to try and keep yourself in the place

0:27:34 > 0:27:38that he has for the two weeks until now. John, the keys for Murray

0:27:38 > 0:27:42success today? It's interesting to see how aggressive Murray is going

0:27:42 > 0:27:46to be. When he beat Novak in the Olympics, he was very aggressive.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49That's best of three. This is best of five. The problem is that both of

0:27:49 > 0:27:55them cancel each other out. Their defences are so good. Their attack

0:27:55 > 0:27:58is so good. They're so quick around the court. It's going to be such

0:27:58 > 0:28:03small margins, to be honest, I honestly don't know how he's going

0:28:03 > 0:28:06to do it. He's playing against the player in the world, but it's going

0:28:06 > 0:28:10to be close. There's a real buzz about the place. There's something

0:28:10 > 0:28:14special in the air today. How will Andy feed off that? He does. We saw

0:28:14 > 0:28:17that as the Olympics. The margins are going to be small. The one thing

0:28:17 > 0:28:24that will be crucial is the opening set. It's not always determining, if

0:28:24 > 0:28:28you look at these guise' records, they're great -- guys' records,

0:28:28 > 0:28:33they're great front runners. If Andy goes up a set, he will have

0:28:33 > 0:28:38momentum. The crowd will too. crowd is the X Factor. Yes, and the

0:28:38 > 0:28:42second serve is crucial. He needs to hit it deeper. Other than that, one

0:28:42 > 0:28:52thing I can guarantee you it won't be a quick match. Gentlemen, thanks

0:28:52 > 0:29:24

0:29:24 > 0:29:31for your insight. Enjoy the the finalists will be on court at

0:29:31 > 0:29:35two o'clock. Murray and Djokovic are undoubtedly the best players in the

0:29:35 > 0:29:43world at the moment and already have a deep rivalry. It makes for great

0:29:43 > 0:29:51drama. We have been looking at what sporting rivalries mean. Rivalry

0:29:51 > 0:29:56often gets a bad press. You think of one-upmanship, resentment, and petty

0:29:56 > 0:30:02jealousy. Rivalries for me were fantastic, and there were no

0:30:02 > 0:30:08negative connotations. It is a great thing, it is important for the

0:30:08 > 0:30:14sport. It makes the players better. I'm not here to have a cup of tea,

0:30:14 > 0:30:24I'm here because I want to win. was rivalry that propelled humans to

0:30:24 > 0:30:33

0:30:33 > 0:30:40the moon, Crick and Watson cracked the structure of DNA. I think Roger

0:30:40 > 0:30:50Federer and Rafael Nadal played each other 22 times, something like that?

0:30:50 > 0:30:58We played 80. Most of the time, we were the number one and number two

0:30:58 > 0:31:03players. It was brutal. We had a rivalry for 18 years and we did have

0:31:03 > 0:31:08ups and downs, but one thing that remained the same was our respect

0:31:08 > 0:31:13for each other. Most of the time after the matches we would be

0:31:14 > 0:31:23comforting each other, leaving notes or saying are you OK. Now we are

0:31:24 > 0:31:24

0:31:24 > 0:31:26even better friends because we are not competing. Jeremy and I, I

0:31:26 > 0:31:31remember he refused to acknowledge my existence in the locker room,

0:31:31 > 0:31:41never shook my hand to say hello, and it worked in a way. I was

0:31:41 > 0:31:43

0:31:43 > 0:31:47intimidated. -- Jimmy. I felt I was down the break before I even stepped

0:31:47 > 0:31:53on the court, which is what he wanted and I don't blame him for

0:31:53 > 0:32:00doing it. He was an incredible competitor. He wanted it so bad. I

0:32:00 > 0:32:04learnt a lot from Jimmy. He showed me that as hard as I was trying, I

0:32:04 > 0:32:09needed to do more. The match ups, particularly on the men's side of

0:32:09 > 0:32:17the game, has elevated the sport to astonishing levels of virtuosity,

0:32:17 > 0:32:27but what about the emotion and mindset of rivalry? Greg Rusedski

0:32:27 > 0:32:28

0:32:28 > 0:32:35was one of my main rivals when I was playing. How did you feel about

0:32:35 > 0:32:41him? The reality was that when I was competing, we weren't best buddies.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45Would you cast that is animosity? I just think a proper rivalry. When we

0:32:45 > 0:32:52played at the Australian Open, it was on the Centre Court, a night

0:32:52 > 0:32:59match, playing in Melbourne, they understood the magnitude of it, and

0:32:59 > 0:33:03in terms of the intensity of one match, it was off the charts.

0:33:03 > 0:33:10respect for everyone, but some of the guys we didn't get along real

0:33:10 > 0:33:19wealth. Ivan Lendl and I, Jimmy Connors, they were the obvious two

0:33:19 > 0:33:27but Bjorn and I never had a problem off the court and that may have been

0:33:27 > 0:33:32the biggest rivalry for me of all. My instincts get better if I don't

0:33:32 > 0:33:36like you. My first difficult rival was Ivan Lendl. I had a great amount

0:33:36 > 0:33:41of respect for him but I wouldn't say I liked him a lot. Then Stefan

0:33:41 > 0:33:48Edberg came along, which was my nemesis in the junior days. We

0:33:48 > 0:33:55played three consecutive Wimbledon finals, and in 1988 he was better,

0:33:55 > 0:34:02then I was better, then in 1990I lost and that was the most difficult

0:34:02 > 0:34:07loss. Against Stefan Edberg, maybe that is why I lost, I never had the

0:34:07 > 0:34:10animosity, I never felt anger towards the guy because I liked him.

0:34:10 > 0:34:17He was a classy sportsmen and you could not help but like him. That

0:34:17 > 0:34:22took away a little bit of the edge. The pressure to raise 1's game is

0:34:22 > 0:34:27relentless and the winner is often the person not with the most talent

0:34:28 > 0:34:34or the most drive, but the one who can handle the unique pressures of

0:34:34 > 0:34:38rivalry. I came into tennis at an incredible time. We each brought

0:34:38 > 0:34:44something to the table that forced the others to react, and you can see

0:34:44 > 0:34:50that clearly now with the guys at the top. It took a while for me to

0:34:50 > 0:34:59get into the mix. I feel a little bit like Djokovic for a while, I was

0:34:59 > 0:35:04one of the guys in third place, and I thought I have got to dig deeper,

0:35:04 > 0:35:10I have got to do everything I can. Andy Murray has done the same thing,

0:35:10 > 0:35:17that is why he got in the final and that is what is amazing about

0:35:17 > 0:35:22sports. That is what you have got to love about it. Great rivalry on

0:35:22 > 0:35:27Centre Court today, Djokovic against Murray. Wimbledon is a traditional

0:35:27 > 0:35:32tournament, and the band is on the Centre Court entertaining the crowd

0:35:32 > 0:35:39and us, although I will be struggling to hear you! John McEnroe

0:35:39 > 0:35:44has joined us might as well. Great rivalry you had, three of the best.

0:35:44 > 0:35:48There is nothing better, you make each other better players. It is the

0:35:48 > 0:35:54most exciting part of the tournament when you walk onto the court with

0:35:54 > 0:35:58one of those guys, battling. My problem was that at the end of my

0:35:58 > 0:36:03career, guys that I was having a rivalry with, they started getting

0:36:03 > 0:36:11too good and I didn't seem to be improving enough! That is why you

0:36:11 > 0:36:17have got to love Andy and Novak, because they keep improving, and

0:36:17 > 0:36:24then people like these coming along! You mentioned about Stefan

0:36:24 > 0:36:32Edberg that you liked him and you didn't want to. No, there was always

0:36:32 > 0:36:40a lot of respect, but people like Ivan Lendl, I wasn't so much friends

0:36:40 > 0:36:48but it helped me perform better. With Edberg, I liked the guy.

0:36:48 > 0:36:58must have been tough to play me then! It was easy!We have talked a

0:36:58 > 0:37:01

0:37:01 > 0:37:09lot about Jimmy Connors but Lendl was another big rivalry. He has had

0:37:09 > 0:37:13a key -- been a key element in Andy's success because he lost some

0:37:13 > 0:37:17tournaments before he started winning, and their approach is very

0:37:17 > 0:37:25meticulous. They really study their opponents. If anybody said to me

0:37:25 > 0:37:35let's have a look at Tate, I said let's go and have beer! We have a

0:37:35 > 0:37:36

0:37:36 > 0:37:41video to show you of Andy Murray hitting Ivan Lendl. This was getting

0:37:41 > 0:37:47the monkey off the back after losing that great five set match when I

0:37:47 > 0:37:57felt like I had to be better, and that was July the 4th which was a

0:37:57 > 0:38:07pretty great day for Americans. was in 1984, wasn't it? Look

0:38:07 > 0:38:11

0:38:11 > 0:38:17carefully at the shorts! Thank you, BBC. No further tapes! There is

0:38:17 > 0:38:23nothing like that. No doubt about that.

0:38:23 > 0:38:27This court, we have been talking about it all day, it still feels

0:38:27 > 0:38:32special. I'm not saying it just because I am here but this is the

0:38:32 > 0:38:40greatest court in tennis. This week, I haven't been on the court

0:38:40 > 0:38:47for 14 years, but there is something so magical about this place and it

0:38:47 > 0:38:57will be interesting to see how one-sided the crowd is. Last year it

0:38:57 > 0:39:02

0:39:02 > 0:39:08was maybe 60/40, and Roger didn't like it. And Novak we'll be prepared

0:39:08 > 0:39:13for anything, but it might be 80/20, what do you think? Definitely, in

0:39:13 > 0:39:18the Olympics there is no doubt it helped that the crowd was with

0:39:18 > 0:39:26Andrew. I thought Del Potro did a good job of getting the crowd on his

0:39:26 > 0:39:30side and it got underneath Djokovic's skin, so it will be

0:39:30 > 0:39:35interesting to watch. Djokovic and Murray played in the juniors

0:39:35 > 0:39:45together, that is a proper rivalry. They bring the best out of each

0:39:45 > 0:39:47

0:39:47 > 0:39:54other. Djokovic was the first one to number one, then last year Murray

0:39:54 > 0:39:58got the U.S. Open, then in the Australian Open Djokovic won the

0:39:58 > 0:40:08final but this will be the best match so far. Let's take a look at

0:40:08 > 0:40:12

0:40:12 > 0:40:16the stats and more of this rivalry between Murray and Djokovic. We have

0:40:16 > 0:40:22known each other since we were 11 years old so on and off the court we

0:40:22 > 0:40:26have a lot of respect for each other. It is a very fair, very

0:40:26 > 0:40:36honest relationship. We have a very professional relationship, when we

0:40:36 > 0:40:39

0:40:39 > 0:40:45were younger it was more friendly. COMMENTATOR: It is the iron man from

0:40:45 > 0:40:51Serbia once again who starts the year with Grand Slam success.

0:40:51 > 0:41:01are big rivals and it is difficult. It is hard because playing in big

0:41:01 > 0:41:22

0:41:22 > 0:41:27matches, there is a lot on the line defeat Djokovic. He is extremely fit

0:41:27 > 0:41:31physically, and that is why he is able to fight until the last point

0:41:31 > 0:41:37of every match. It is normal to expect most of the crowd will be on

0:41:37 > 0:41:43his side, he is a local hero and has a big chance to win Wimbledon.

0:41:43 > 0:41:47important was that match in the Olympic Games in the semi-final?

0:41:47 > 0:41:52think it was the biggest tournament for Andy Murray in his career. The

0:41:52 > 0:41:59other majors that he lost, he went into a complete funk, but this

0:41:59 > 0:42:04forced him to get back into it quickly and prepare, and the crowd

0:42:04 > 0:42:09made a difference. Obviously playing two out of three, three out of five,

0:42:09 > 0:42:14that is a different animal. But that win was still important, and the way

0:42:14 > 0:42:23he dominated Roger in the final, to me that was a big part of why he's

0:42:23 > 0:42:30won the Open, don't you think? You will be better equipped to play his

0:42:30 > 0:42:35best today. It will not be easy. We want it to be an instant classic,

0:42:35 > 0:42:44but this is tricky. It is hot as well. What type of effect will that

0:42:44 > 0:42:49have on these guys? I noticed it was hard to keep calm! We will talk more

0:42:49 > 0:42:56about the conditions in a moment, but let's is beaked to Gary behind

0:42:56 > 0:43:02the scenes. The master of ceremonies here, you have just come from the

0:43:02 > 0:43:06dressing room and Andy is in there. What is he doing at the moment?

0:43:06 > 0:43:16are so professional, just eating and getting their stuff together. It is

0:43:16 > 0:43:16

0:43:16 > 0:43:24amazing. Did you speak to him?Yes, he said Miami is a lot hotter, so he

0:43:24 > 0:43:27was fine about the heat. And is Djokovic in there? He will be there

0:43:27 > 0:43:33in a minute but it is amazing they are in the same dressing room, they

0:43:33 > 0:43:38will come out and play each other, and then go back to the same

0:43:38 > 0:43:43dressing room. Novak Djokovic is aiming for his seventh Grand Slam

0:43:43 > 0:43:52title. He won here in 2011 so he knows how to win here and he knows

0:43:52 > 0:43:58how to win people over. The forces of evil could never

0:43:58 > 0:44:08destroy the power of the wonder man. He knows the most formidable journey

0:44:08 > 0:44:20

0:44:20 > 0:44:24COMMENTATOR: it is quite phenomenal, this semifinal. Definitely one of

0:44:24 > 0:44:28the best matches that I've played in my life. One of the most exciting.

0:44:28 > 0:44:34It was an incredibly high level of performance from both of us from the

0:44:34 > 0:44:44start to the end. Fortunately one of us had to -- unfortunately one of us

0:44:44 > 0:44:47had to lose, but it was great to be part of such a thrilling match.

0:44:47 > 0:44:50I'd like to find out about Novak Djokovic, the joker. It's the tag

0:44:50 > 0:44:53attached to you. You're the world number one. You're a bit of a

0:44:53 > 0:45:00superstar and a celebrity. There's pressure an stress involved. Does

0:45:00 > 0:45:05being a joker help with that? think it does. At the Australian

0:45:05 > 0:45:09Open we have the charity days and it's fun, because those exhibitions

0:45:09 > 0:45:13are for us, a fun time on the tennis court. We don't get to experience

0:45:13 > 0:45:17that often that kind of sensation because we're focussed. We want to

0:45:17 > 0:45:24do our job, to win the match. At the end of the day, it's all sport. It's

0:45:24 > 0:45:28all really about having fun and being happy in life.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31The final, Andy Murray next, someone you've known very well for a long

0:45:31 > 0:45:36time. Can you remember the first time you met him and what he was

0:45:36 > 0:45:44like. He was very small, really tiny as I was. We were only 11 years old.

0:45:44 > 0:45:51We grew up together. We went toe to toe throughout the junior career and

0:45:51 > 0:45:55events. Then we managed to, more or less at the same time, make a

0:45:55 > 0:46:00breakthrough to the ATP world. There's only seven days of

0:46:00 > 0:46:06difference between us. Our games are similar. So it's going to be very

0:46:06 > 0:46:13exciting match because, considering all the past matches in the last few

0:46:13 > 0:46:17years that we've played, you can expect a long one. Can you remember

0:46:17 > 0:46:21what exchange you had after the US Open final, which was Andy's first

0:46:21 > 0:46:28Grand Slam title? I said to him that he deserve it's and I'm glad he won

0:46:28 > 0:46:33it. The reality is that he has been one of the most dedicated players to

0:46:33 > 0:46:40this sport and a very hard worker. Can you feel that something's

0:46:40 > 0:46:43changed for the better in his game. He's a very complete player.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47Who do you think is going to be favourite to win? I don't think

0:46:47 > 0:46:53there is a clear favourite to be honest, because we are one and two

0:46:53 > 0:46:57in the world, but we're both playing good. Being confident and of course,

0:46:57 > 0:47:00he's going to have more support on his side, so that can help. But it's

0:47:00 > 0:47:04not the first time that I've been playing in these conditions. I'll be

0:47:04 > 0:47:07ready for whatever is coming up. What would it mean for you if you

0:47:08 > 0:47:12could put your hands on the trophy again? I'm dreaming of it. This is

0:47:12 > 0:47:21the biggest trophy in sport. I'm going to give everything I have,

0:47:21 > 0:47:26whatever it takes. Well, they know each other so well. Their games are

0:47:26 > 0:47:30so evenly matched. I think if both guys play their absolute best, Novak

0:47:30 > 0:47:35is the more complete player. A little bit more to his game. Andy is

0:47:35 > 0:47:42a bit more comfortable moving on this surface. I don't know if the

0:47:42 > 0:47:46nubs on this side will be an issue as it was with Del Potro in the

0:47:46 > 0:47:50previous round. I'm thinking that second serve return Murray will go

0:47:50 > 0:47:54after that more, can do more with it. Djokovic better getting more

0:47:54 > 0:47:59first serves back. I think he's shown a willingness to attack more

0:47:59 > 0:48:02than Andy. Even though I think Andy has excellent hands, is a good

0:48:03 > 0:48:06volleyer. When it's all said and done, to me, because they're so

0:48:06 > 0:48:11similar, I have to think who is going to handle the nerves better

0:48:11 > 0:48:14and the crowd is going to be an issue also, because the styles are

0:48:14 > 0:48:19so similar. I know you've got to leave us. I will keep talking to you

0:48:19 > 0:48:24about this match, apologies Boris and Tim. We'll hear from you in a

0:48:24 > 0:48:29moment. Move aside. As far as this is concerned, what will Murray go

0:48:29 > 0:48:35for? The forehand of Djokovic is a weapon, but can it get tight? Yeah,

0:48:35 > 0:48:38of course. I don't think that there's any clear-cut approach that

0:48:38 > 0:48:42either one can take. Do you dare them to come to net because they

0:48:42 > 0:48:46don't come to net much? Both are good volleyers. That's risky because

0:48:46 > 0:48:50if they don't hit it the way they like they destroy the short ball. Do

0:48:50 > 0:48:53you be more aggressive on the second serve, return of serve? I would

0:48:53 > 0:48:58think. So does it look like Djokovic's forehand is better than

0:48:58 > 0:49:02Murray's, I think so, even though it's gotten better. Can Murray put

0:49:02 > 0:49:09more an the backhand? Yeah. He has a bigger backhand. I'm confused now.

0:49:09 > 0:49:14Who's better? Is Djokovic? Am I speaking German or something? This

0:49:15 > 0:49:21is called riding the fence. Come on. It's a tough call. There you go.

0:49:21 > 0:49:26There it is. What about the semifinal then. That was Sam that

0:49:26 > 0:49:31sapping for Jock -- stamina sapping for Djokovic. I would think so. But

0:49:31 > 0:49:34I've seen him come back and play six hours against Nadal at the

0:49:34 > 0:49:40Australian, after playing five hours the round before. If anyone can do

0:49:40 > 0:49:43it at this point I would think it would be Djokovic. The heat is an

0:49:43 > 0:49:49issue. He's had problems with this in the past. I think that you can

0:49:49 > 0:49:56see, I think Tim's point is well taken. When Del Potro started using

0:49:56 > 0:50:00the crowd massively, that got to him a bit. I would suspect, watching

0:50:00 > 0:50:04Murray in the quarters and semi-s he will do the same thing. It's such a

0:50:04 > 0:50:12different match up, because they were up against big hitters in the

0:50:12 > 0:50:16semifinal. Now they're punishing baseliners Because they're both

0:50:16 > 0:50:20great at returning. It will be interesting to see what they do, how

0:50:20 > 0:50:24big they go. You're not going to see someone do something radically

0:50:24 > 0:50:28different. They will step in there and say, I'm better than you. My

0:50:28 > 0:50:33will is better. I do believe I'm in a better condition. I think I have

0:50:33 > 0:50:39more heart. This is not about like Xs and Os at this stage. On that

0:50:39 > 0:50:44note... Are you off? You're leaving us. Always good to see you.Nice to

0:50:44 > 0:50:50see you. This was a great dinner. Who's going to win? Why were we not

0:50:50 > 0:50:56invited. Sue, I want to get a hug from you too. Thank you. Who's going

0:50:56 > 0:51:01to win? Andy Murray... In five? five sets. We're in for it. A great

0:51:01 > 0:51:07afternoon. I sure hope it goes five though. This is going to be great.

0:51:07 > 0:51:10Thank you very much. Well, we've met Novak Djokovic. Now Andy Murray in

0:51:10 > 0:51:14his second successive final here and couldn't have a tougher opponent

0:51:14 > 0:51:18against Djokovic. He faced the greatest player of all time 12

0:51:18 > 0:51:22months ago when he lost to Roger Federer in four sets. Today, much

0:51:22 > 0:51:32has changed in his career. It's all been positive, as Phill Jones

0:51:32 > 0:51:36

0:51:36 > 0:51:40A year ago, Andy Murray walked out here to a world of expectation.

0:51:40 > 0:51:47Three previous major final defeats became four at Roger Federer's

0:51:47 > 0:51:55hands. It cut deep and stripped Murray's soul bear. -- bare. I'm

0:51:55 > 0:51:58going to try this and it's not going to be easy.

0:51:58 > 0:52:04Rebounding from such despair would surely take Murray down a long and

0:52:04 > 0:52:08punishing road of redemption. In fact, it proved the making of him.

0:52:08 > 0:52:12Before, when I'd lost in slam finals, I'd come away from them and

0:52:12 > 0:52:17it would take me a long time to recover from them. Whereas after the

0:52:17 > 0:52:22Wimbledon final, I was very disappointed, but I was content with

0:52:22 > 0:52:26the way I played and the things that I did out on the court. Rather than

0:52:26 > 0:52:31it take me two, three months to get back to playing good tennis again,

0:52:31 > 0:52:41when I step back on the practice court the first day after Wimbledon,

0:52:41 > 0:52:46

0:52:46 > 0:52:49It's a golden triumph for Andy Murray. What about the X Factor of

0:52:49 > 0:52:52the crowd here during the Olympics and what that did to you? The only

0:52:52 > 0:52:58thing I can say is that it really, really helps, when the crowd are

0:52:58 > 0:53:02loud, from the first point right through until the last, builds

0:53:02 > 0:53:06pressure on your opponent and builds momentum on your side. I loved the

0:53:06 > 0:53:11atmosphere at the Olympics. It was great.

0:53:11 > 0:53:21COMMENTATOR: Andy Murray has won the title. He has won his first Grand

0:53:21 > 0:53:26Slam. The US Open was just pure relief for me. I'd thought, after

0:53:26 > 0:53:31some of the losses I'd had in slams that I may never win one. That was

0:53:31 > 0:53:34hard to get my head round. I think in some ways that helped putting it

0:53:34 > 0:53:39in my head that it may not happen, but I'm doing everything that I can.

0:53:39 > 0:53:49I'm working as hard as I can to achieve it. It's great to finally

0:53:49 > 0:53:56

0:53:56 > 0:54:00the public along with you and got to know you better along the way, did

0:54:00 > 0:54:04you get a sense of that as well? It's been an interesting, I don't

0:54:04 > 0:54:09know, maturing process for me and kind of growing up in public. The

0:54:09 > 0:54:15first time I played here I was 18 years old. I'm now 26. I've played a

0:54:15 > 0:54:22lot of tough matches. I've had some great wins, some very tough losses.

0:54:22 > 0:54:27I think people have seen, especially over the last year, that I am

0:54:27 > 0:54:32emotional, that I'm not just almost robotic on the court and I am

0:54:32 > 0:54:39desperate to win. I love winning. I train extremely hard. I think people

0:54:39 > 0:54:47have started to see that side of me. They've accepted me for what I am.

0:54:47 > 0:54:54# What if I could write the story # What if all this ends in glory

0:54:55 > 0:54:57# What if the moon and stars and... Just put it into words, if you can,

0:54:57 > 0:55:05about making another Wimbledon final, what it would mean to lift

0:55:05 > 0:55:09that trophy? It would mean a lot. Winning Grand Slams is why I'm

0:55:09 > 0:55:13playing tennis. I want to compete for these events. I will give 110%.

0:55:13 > 0:55:23I hope it's enough. It may not be. But I'm going to try for every

0:55:23 > 0:55:25

0:55:25 > 0:55:29single point. # I never have to say "what if" #

0:55:29 > 0:55:34We've heard that Andy is quite relaxed in the locker room. I wonder

0:55:34 > 0:55:38how his mum Judy and girlfriend Kim Sears is feeling now. This is the

0:55:38 > 0:55:43big moment. So much drama, so much emotion on court 12 months ago,

0:55:43 > 0:55:47which was so painful for both of them to watch. What will unfold this

0:55:47 > 0:55:51afternoon? Kim has certainly been a stabling influence in Andy's life

0:55:51 > 0:55:57over the past few years. Kim and Judy will be taking their place on

0:55:57 > 0:56:01Centre Court very soon. So, let's first talk about, we

0:56:01 > 0:56:05talked about how Djokovic got there in his semifinal. Andy, not just the

0:56:05 > 0:56:09semifinal. He's had some anxious moments right the way through.

0:56:10 > 0:56:14certainly has. I think you reflect on the first week. It was faultless.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18He didn't drop a set. He played consistently. Second week he almost

0:56:18 > 0:56:21started again and it was a quarter final match against Verdasco where

0:56:21 > 0:56:26he was in trouble. Verdasco was playing very well. He was dominating

0:56:26 > 0:56:33Andy. Andy was too defensive. Probably playing too many slice back

0:56:33 > 0:56:38hands, getting too deep in the court. Down 2-0, his back was

0:56:38 > 0:56:41against the wall. He turned the third set 6-1 and nervous moments in

0:56:41 > 0:56:46the forth and fifth. You can't always play your best. Certainly, to

0:56:46 > 0:56:50come through that. Janowicz wasn't easy as well. Against such a big

0:56:50 > 0:56:55server, it wasn't always predictable. Now he's got through to

0:56:55 > 0:56:59the final, I think that's where it is actually a bit more predictable

0:56:59 > 0:57:04because he knows Djokovic's game so well. There won't be any surprises

0:57:04 > 0:57:09out there. This was a nasty match for him to play against a player who

0:57:09 > 0:57:13was bombing down 140mph serves. Yeah, difficult semifinal mentally

0:57:13 > 0:57:18because Murray's playing against a player that had nothing to lose. He

0:57:18 > 0:57:23was already further than in his wildest dreams. He was down first

0:57:23 > 0:57:26set. He came back in the second. Down a break in the third set. He

0:57:26 > 0:57:29came back again, then the stop and go with the roof and the

0:57:29 > 0:57:35discussions. Mentally it lifted him up a lot. I have a feeling that on

0:57:35 > 0:57:38the Friday night, Murray felt a lot better than Djokovic coming through,

0:57:38 > 0:57:44because it was just very stimulating Friday evening. The crowd got into

0:57:45 > 0:57:49it. I think that's the type of atmosphere you expect today. My feel

0:57:49 > 0:57:52for the match is if it goes quick and if Djokovic runs away with the

0:57:52 > 0:57:56first and second set, it will be a straight sets win Djokovic. If

0:57:56 > 0:58:00Murray gets his teeth into the match, if the crowd is warming up,

0:58:00 > 0:58:04if it gets into a fourth, fifth set, Murray is in favour. You talk about

0:58:04 > 0:58:08the crowd. You loved the crowd when you were out here. How does it feel

0:58:08 > 0:58:11to be here on centre and the buzz? It's funny you say that. I had so

0:58:11 > 0:58:15many great experiences on the court, playing a lot of my matches out

0:58:15 > 0:58:18here. Yesterday I came with my wife and two eldest daughters and I sat

0:58:18 > 0:58:23in the crowd for the first time, I think, in probably 25 years, because

0:58:23 > 0:58:27I was playing or I was getting ready to play, and I sat in my seats just

0:58:27 > 0:58:30a little further back and I watched a set-and-a-half of the ladies

0:58:31 > 0:58:35final. The atmosphere out there was fantastic. Then it made me think,

0:58:35 > 0:58:39wow, I wonder what it must have been like for my matches. Then I was

0:58:39 > 0:58:45thinking, I wonder what it's like to be in the crowd for Andy's because

0:58:45 > 0:58:49we're in the commentary box. It's a little bit of a cocoon. I think the

0:58:49 > 0:58:52crowd have a big part to play. If they can really get Andy off to a

0:58:53 > 0:58:56good start and he's obviously got to do that with his play, but there's a

0:58:56 > 0:59:01chance that they could really ride this wave of British sport right

0:59:01 > 0:59:05now. And Boris, he brought Ivan Lendl in because he wanted him to

0:59:05 > 0:59:10make a difference and he has. Particularly in the grand slams, as

0:59:10 > 0:59:12far as it's concerned, he really has come of age. We can see here he was

0:59:12 > 0:59:15runner up four times in his first runner up four times in his first

0:59:15 > 0:59:21four. Then it all turned around, a lot of that has to do with the

0:59:21 > 0:59:25experience that Lendl is giving him. Very much so. The reason Ivan Lendl

0:59:25 > 0:59:32is in Murray's corner because of matches like today. He's been there

0:59:32 > 0:59:35for 18 months. And the record is excellent. Winning the Olympic gold

0:59:35 > 0:59:39and the appearance here at last Wimbledon. It's those moments

0:59:39 > 0:59:43between a Friday night semifinal and a Sunday morning final, what do you

0:59:43 > 0:59:49do? You obviously don't train any more. It's detail, mental approach

0:59:49 > 0:59:55to the game. How to take the pressure of how -- how to take the

0:59:55 > 0:59:59pressure off. Ivan knows exactly what to do, exactsly what it feels

0:59:59 > 1:00:03like. We've seen the players on the practice court. We've heard about

1:00:03 > 1:00:09Andy in the locker room. Do you have a routine thaw stick to for the big

1:00:09 > 1:00:15matches? -- that you stick to for the big matches? Absolutely. It gets

1:00:15 > 1:00:19so bored -- boring at the end. I don't want the pasta, I don't want

1:00:19 > 1:00:25to wake up at 8. 30. But you stick to the routine because it's the RAC

1:00:25 > 1:00:29Foundation. It's not going to change for the -- for the final.

1:00:29 > 1:00:33We saw Novak Djokovic on the practice court making his way. He's

1:00:33 > 1:00:40got so much experience for a 26-year-old, hasn't he? He's as coon

1:00:40 > 1:00:43as a cucumber on court. -- cool as a cucumber on court. Yes they have.

1:00:43 > 1:00:46Again, this is exactly what Boris is talking about, it's part of a

1:00:46 > 1:00:50routine, so that there are no surprises in the lead up to the

1:00:50 > 1:00:54match. You want to make sure that you've hit balls, you've stretched

1:00:54 > 1:00:57and you've warmed up. Then you go into the locker room to get your

1:00:57 > 1:00:59equipment ready, shower, change and your final thoughts before you come

1:00:59 > 1:01:07your final thoughts before you come your final thoughts before you come

1:01:07 > 1:01:14out. And they are going to the same locker room. Which sport has the

1:01:14 > 1:01:20same locker room? You shower next to them. You see whether he has a

1:01:20 > 1:01:26bandage around his knee or so forth. It is unique. That's why the mental

1:01:26 > 1:01:29aspect cannot be overestimated. Well, they have got to get this

1:01:29 > 1:01:32court ready. We have to re-position behind Centre Court, but the

1:01:32 > 1:01:36atmosphere is building and the tension is building and if you have

1:01:36 > 1:01:39just joined us, welcome to Wimbledon because the men's singles final is a

1:01:39 > 1:01:49few minutes away. It is Britain's Andy Murray against Novak Djokovic.

1:01:49 > 1:01:50

1:01:50 > 1:01:54It is blue skies all the way here today. The hottest day of the year.

1:01:54 > 1:02:00And there in Dunblane, Andy's hometown, the crowds have gathered

1:02:00 > 1:02:10in anticipation to watch their famous son. They are all at the

1:02:10 > 1:02:10

1:02:10 > 1:02:14Dunblane Centre cheering him on. So the eyes of the nation are over the

1:02:14 > 1:02:19land shortly will be focussed on Centre Court and that most famous
