:00:46. > :00:52.SUE BARKER: Walking into Wimbledon on day one, you get a special

:00:53. > :01:05.feeling. The butterflies are there in anticipation of what lies ahead

:01:06. > :01:09.over the next two weeks. You ask yourself what stories will emerge,

:01:10. > :01:13.what shocks will we see, who will become the star of the future and,

:01:14. > :01:24.of course, who will win. There's so much that happens here. Quite

:01:25. > :01:30.simply, there is no other tournament in the world like it. For one

:01:31. > :01:33.player, a new chapter emerges in an already historic career. For the

:01:34. > :01:39.first time in generations, a British player will walk on to Centre Court

:01:40. > :01:42.to start a defence of a Men's Singles title, a title that was won

:01:43. > :01:57.in spectacular style 12 months ago. If Andy wins today, on the 7th day

:01:58. > :02:02.of the 7th month, the wait at last will be over.

:02:03. > :02:08.ANDREW CASTLE: This is the final we were looking forward to in so many

:02:09. > :02:12.ways. The top two players in the world playing on the top stage. I'm

:02:13. > :02:17.getting nervous. What a point! Soaking up the

:02:18. > :02:40.pressure. He's a brick wall! Looks like he's

:02:41. > :02:47.been sparring with Carl Froch! Djokovic is down. Wonderful,

:02:48. > :02:55.wonderful stuff. This is the boy digging deep! He's got it! He's made

:02:56. > :03:01.it down the line. BORIS BECKER: Any point will do.

:03:02. > :03:14.UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Murray. ANDREW CASTLE: Andy Murray is the

:03:15. > :03:22.Wimbledon Champion! SUE BARKER: We have waited 77 years

:03:23. > :03:27.for this. The Men's Singles champion 2013 is Andy Murray! I don't know

:03:28. > :03:31.whether you realise what you have done. I hope you enjoyed it. I tried

:03:32. > :03:53.my best. SUE BARKER: What a day that was as

:03:54. > :03:57.Andy Murray's victory against Novak Djokovic ended a 77-year wait for a

:03:58. > :04:04.British man to win Wimbledon following the great Fred Perry's

:04:05. > :04:10.third and final triumph in 1936. Andy's name will be forever etched

:04:11. > :04:14.on the famous champions' board. Can he defend his title and add his name

:04:15. > :04:19.again? We will find out the answer to that question over the next two

:04:20. > :04:26.weeks as here on the hallowed turf the modern-day greats battle it out

:04:27. > :04:31.with the silver gilt cup and the Venus Rose Water Dish, the ultimate

:04:32. > :05:23.prizes. It is time for the action to start. Welcome to Wimbledon 2014!

:05:24. > :05:29.SUE BARKER: Many of them will be on court today. We have so much to look

:05:30. > :05:36.forward to over the fortnight. The Big Four in the men's all eyeing the

:05:37. > :05:39.title. The Ladies Championship promises to be outstanding with so

:05:40. > :05:44.many new talents emerging. Today is a day for British fans to celebrate.

:05:45. > :05:49.First on Centre Court, Andy Murray steps out as defending champion. We

:05:50. > :05:52.have waited 77 years for that, too! The fans, I was out with many of

:05:53. > :05:56.them today, some of them queueing since Saturday morning to make sure

:05:57. > :06:01.that they will be courtside to see this historic day. So much to enjoy

:06:02. > :06:09.elsewhere. Someone who knows about defending the title, Roger Federer.

:06:10. > :06:13.He's defended it seven times. Maria Sharapova has. She comes here as the

:06:14. > :06:17.French Open Champion. Andy Murray drove himself into Wimbledon. He

:06:18. > :06:21.went out to the practice courts with his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo, and

:06:22. > :06:25.just getting the training done. He is not too nervous. We will hear

:06:26. > :06:29.from him throughout the day. Andy Murray, the reigning Wimbledon

:06:30. > :06:33.Champion. Everyone has been heading up to the hill here, if they can't

:06:34. > :06:37.get on Centre Court, to see this historic day. I'm here with two

:06:38. > :06:42.people who know what that's all like. It is John McEnroe and Lindsay

:06:43. > :06:48.Davenport. You don't realise what a big day this is for British tennis?

:06:49. > :06:53.Especially after what happened in the World Cup! You had to mention

:06:54. > :07:00.it! I had to get it off quick. This is awesome. Now that this string has

:07:01. > :07:05.been broken, everyone can relax, right? 77 years, come on! Take a

:07:06. > :07:10.little - you can't tell me there is as much pressure on Andy now! I hope

:07:11. > :07:15.he is not putting as much pressure on himself? He wants to do well, but

:07:16. > :07:23.he should enjoy this. He won the title last year. The pressure should

:07:24. > :07:30.be off him. Hold on! You don't want me this year? What? We are spoilt

:07:31. > :07:37.with Wimbledon Champions! What are these? These were glasses before I

:07:38. > :07:45.dropped them! I dropped everything on my way here. I am missing you

:07:46. > :07:49.already. You are on your way? I have to stop by and say hello to my old

:07:50. > :07:56.team! We are missing you. You have got a proper job? I have got a day

:07:57. > :08:01.job, a proper day tennis job. We are going to see each other Thursday,

:08:02. > :08:09.right? Absolutely. You know when this game is - Germany versus US,

:08:10. > :08:14.what time? 8.00pm local time. The chicken will be ready for you. I

:08:15. > :08:22.will leave you to it. How is your man? How are his preparations for

:08:23. > :08:28.Wimbledon? He didn't play any matches. Are you concerned, coach?

:08:29. > :08:31.Absolutely not. The weather was beautiful. He got enough practice

:08:32. > :08:35.in. At the end of the day, you have to play your first match regardless

:08:36. > :08:40.how many pre-Wimbledon tournaments you have played. He is ready. He

:08:41. > :08:45.wants to go out there. The wrist is OK? Everything is fine. Very

:08:46. > :08:49.diplomatic. You need a new pair of sunglasses. Thank you very much.

:08:50. > :08:53.Good to see you. You talk about who is here - there is such a buzz here

:08:54. > :09:01.at Wimbledon. It is very tough to pick a winner? I would say the four

:09:02. > :09:05.guys, Boris is out of earshot, if you go - I don't know what the odds

:09:06. > :09:12.are. They are close to being the same. You can make an argument for

:09:13. > :09:17.anyone. Roger, his best bet is this tournament. That puts him in the

:09:18. > :09:20.mix. The length of the match is not going to be an issue and the

:09:21. > :09:24.physicality that you see at the French will be less of an issue. I

:09:25. > :09:30.would say it would be - if you picked any of those four guys, you

:09:31. > :09:34.could make a very good case for any one of them. I have been trying to

:09:35. > :09:39.think about who would be my pick if one of those four guys didn't win. I

:09:40. > :09:46.will save that for later in the show. OK. We will await that answer.

:09:47. > :09:50.As far as the ladies are concerned, we are talking about Serena and

:09:51. > :09:55.Maria, but there are so many new talents emerging? There are. This

:09:56. > :10:01.next generation seem to be not in awe of the superstars. They believe

:10:02. > :10:05.they can win. For the last decade, we have seen some of the newcomers

:10:06. > :10:10.come up against the top and freeze. You don't get that sense with this

:10:11. > :10:13.generation. This is Serena's tournament. Losing early at the

:10:14. > :10:17.French, she has had more time to prepare. Those losses motivate her

:10:18. > :10:21.even more. I would be surprised if we didn't see her deep into the

:10:22. > :10:30.second week. She got angry, didn't she, after the French? That

:10:31. > :10:35.preparation at the NBA Finals and Kim and Kanye's wedding - and some

:10:36. > :10:39.tennis thrown in! Serena and Maria will be on court tomorrow. Here is

:10:40. > :10:48.who is on today: Andy Murray begins his defence of

:10:49. > :10:58.the Wimbledon title. He will face the world number 105, David Goffin.

:10:59. > :11:08.Australian Open Champion Li Na is second on Centre. She is up against

:11:09. > :11:12.Paula Kania. Last year's beaten finalist, Novak Djokovic, is the top

:11:13. > :11:20.seed in the men's draw. He will be taking on Andrey Golubev in Round

:11:21. > :11:25.One. Queen's Champion Grigor Dimitrov is having the best season

:11:26. > :11:32.of his career. He begins his campaign against Ryan Harrison on

:11:33. > :11:36.Court 1. In early action today, Johanna Konta is looking for a first

:11:37. > :11:43.win at Wimbledon, but standing in her way is the world number one in

:11:44. > :11:47.doubles, China's Shuai Peng. She is on Court 12. There it is. We will be

:11:48. > :11:51.going live to that match around midday after we have set the scene

:11:52. > :12:02.ahead of the Championships. If you want to watch her now, press the red

:12:03. > :12:31.button. Also on the red button, Tomas Berdych, he faces s Victor

:12:32. > :12:36.Hernescu. This is day one and we are going to

:12:37. > :12:50.look ahead to the reigning champion, Andy Murray. Let's hear from him. As

:12:51. > :12:56.the tournament gets closer, I'm starting to feel more nervous, feel

:12:57. > :13:02.the pressure a little bit more. The week build-up has been a bit quieter

:13:03. > :13:05.than usual. Some of the years, it was extremely busy. I don't know if

:13:06. > :13:09.that is because of the World Cup, though, or not. It's been quieter.

:13:10. > :13:13.You don't know how it is going to feel to walk on Centre Court as the

:13:14. > :13:17.defending champion. You have had a similar experience at the US Open.

:13:18. > :13:20.It is different there. You played Wednesday night and here there is

:13:21. > :13:27.this famous tradition. How do you think it might feel? Well, I have

:13:28. > :13:31.spoken to Amelie a little bit about it. Everyone deals with those

:13:32. > :13:37.situations differently. I expect to be nervous. I expect to feel the

:13:38. > :13:44.pressure, as I'm going towards the court. I hope, you know, when I walk

:13:45. > :13:50.out there I can enjoy it for a few moments and then like most nerves

:13:51. > :13:54.and stuff, once you get out there, you start to settle into the match.

:13:55. > :13:59.Is that one of the areas where she has had the most impact, the fact

:14:00. > :14:03.that she herself knows what it is like to defend a Wimbledon title?

:14:04. > :14:08.That is one of the positives for sure. Being able to speak to her

:14:09. > :14:12.about that. And how she handled it, the things that she did, the things

:14:13. > :14:17.that she didn't do and what she may have done differently if she had to

:14:18. > :14:22.do it again. That is why having someone in that position can only be

:14:23. > :14:26.of benefit, really. Have you had a hit with her yet? On Friday, we had

:14:27. > :14:30.a light hit on one of the courts, yeah. She was hitting the ball well,

:14:31. > :14:36.actually. I was surprised. She hadn't played that much tennis

:14:37. > :14:41.lately. Yeah, she hit the ball well. We had a call at the BBC earlier

:14:42. > :14:45.from someone who says that they saw you chasing a loose dog down a busy

:14:46. > :14:52.road on your way into Wimbledon? Yeah. This morning. Yes, that is

:14:53. > :15:00.true. It wasn't my dog. I was driving to practice and there was a

:15:01. > :15:06.dog running along the road so I parked the car and basically got out

:15:07. > :15:10.the car and tried to stop the traffic and then I managed to get

:15:11. > :15:19.the dog, I got it in the back-seat of my car. I called the number on

:15:20. > :15:23.the tag and amazingly, my two dogs walk with that dog - I didn't

:15:24. > :15:29.realise - walk with that dog quite a lot, so when I met the owner, she

:15:30. > :15:34.said we know your dogs and stuff and, yeah, she was happy I had

:15:35. > :15:39.picked it up. The dog was pretty strong. It didn't want me to grab it

:15:40. > :15:45.by the collar and put it in the car. Yeah, thankfully, the dog was fine

:15:46. > :15:50.and it's all good. He was a little late for practice. Now, he is a

:15:51. > :15:54.dog-rescuing hero! Peter would be very proud of him. That is a good

:15:55. > :15:59.story to start the tournament. You are always coming up with something,

:16:00. > :16:02.Sue! He loves his dogs. That is how he relaxes, that is why he enjoys

:16:03. > :16:08.being at Wimbledon, being at home, he has Kim there, the dogs there, he

:16:09. > :16:12.is enjoying his home. It would relax him. He gets to drive in. Even

:16:13. > :16:16.sleeping in your own bed is so much more comfortable. He has got more

:16:17. > :16:19.comfortable here every year he's played. This year, defending

:16:20. > :16:23.champion, less pressure on him. Should be a great year. Does he live

:16:24. > :16:31.in London? Lives about half an hour away. He spends most of his time. I

:16:32. > :16:36.understand he is opening a hotel and he spends a lot of time in Miami. In

:16:37. > :16:40.the winner. He is here during the summer. A lovely home. He seems very

:16:41. > :16:44.relaxed. We say there is less pressure. He wants to add to the

:16:45. > :16:49.Grand Slam tally. Once you win one Wimbledon title, you can taste it.

:16:50. > :16:54.You want more of them. There is not the same pressure. We should be very

:16:55. > :17:02.clear about that. And thankfully, for him. Yes - and us! Exactly. Need

:17:03. > :17:07.I say more? But it hasn't gone according to plan, has it, since

:17:08. > :17:11.Wimbledon 12 months ago? Matches lost and the back surgery. He has

:17:12. > :17:15.not been in a final since? No, but the big step forward was the

:17:16. > :17:18.semifinals at the French Open. That should give him confidence.

:17:19. > :17:21.Interesting to hear him talk saying he was in more pain last year at

:17:22. > :17:23.this time with his back Interesting to hear him talk saying

:17:24. > :17:28.he was in more pain last than he is this year. It took a little while to

:17:29. > :17:33.get his confidence going, but just with his performance a few weeks ago

:17:34. > :17:38.at the French, that will give him a nice boost going into Wimbledon. I

:17:39. > :17:42.have to say that when I heard all this talk about a new coach - and I

:17:43. > :17:46.preface this by saying I was surprised it didn't work out with

:17:47. > :17:49.Ivan and him - once I had heard that the possibility, I was thinking I

:17:50. > :17:56.hope he does something out of the box again like he did with Ivan. I

:17:57. > :18:02.must say that he passed with flying colours! Picking Amelie Mauresmo.

:18:03. > :18:08.This is very interesting, the only part I - you worry about any team

:18:09. > :18:13.when they get together, but doing it before Wimbledon. I was at the

:18:14. > :18:18.French when it was announced a few hours ago before Novak played Rafa

:18:19. > :18:22.and all of a sudden starting tomorrow... You know everything,

:18:23. > :18:25.Sue. How long did they know before that announcement was made? A few

:18:26. > :18:29.weeks before the French they started speaking on the phone. It wasn't

:18:30. > :18:34.decided and she went to watch his first-round match and that is when

:18:35. > :18:39.the rumours started. And then it was decided I think after that semifinal

:18:40. > :18:43.loss, which was a bad loss for him against Rafa. She is interesting. A

:18:44. > :18:46.lot of people saying why her. She came through a lot of difficulty in

:18:47. > :18:51.her career and found a way to win and pressure and that is what she's

:18:52. > :18:56.going to bring to the table? She is a fantastic woman. Speaking to her

:18:57. > :19:01.for a few minutes, everyone will get a sense of her great energy. She is

:19:02. > :19:09.a thinker. She's so good-natured and she doesn't take herself too

:19:10. > :19:12.seriously. Just like Ivan(!) Could have been twins(!) She's wonderful

:19:13. > :19:16.to sit down and talk to. She loves the sport. She loves talking about

:19:17. > :19:22.the sport. Andy is a student of the game. Some people, looking at the

:19:23. > :19:28.stats, he's won one match on grass. We shouldn't be worried about that?

:19:29. > :19:33.He was flat-beat from the French. If you remember last year, he didn't

:19:34. > :19:37.play. I think it was more important that he gets a match at Queen's. At

:19:38. > :19:42.this stage, it doesn't matter. It's a totally different situation. It

:19:43. > :19:48.may have done - it may turn out to do him some good. If you look at his

:19:49. > :19:54.draw, it is fairly favourable. Yes. It certainly is. As we saw, Andy was

:19:55. > :20:04.here earlier today. John Lloyd and Garry Richardson were watching.

:20:05. > :20:07.GARRY RICHARDSON: Andy Murray has experienced everything at Wimbledon.

:20:08. > :20:13.Something new today, on Centre Court as the defending champion?

:20:14. > :20:18.JOHN LLOYD: Once a couple of games go by, he will be fine. He relishes

:20:19. > :20:21.pressure here at Wimbledon. First couple of minutes might be more

:20:22. > :20:25.interesting. After that, he will relax. Roger Federer said he thinks

:20:26. > :20:28.possibly winning a second Wimbledon is easier than getting that first

:20:29. > :20:33.one. What do you think? Not many people have done it. Two out of the

:20:34. > :20:37.last eight champions have managed to retain their crown. I would think

:20:38. > :20:42.it's easier. The pressure was on him last year and he has a great shot

:20:43. > :20:45.this year. The title is going to come down between him and Djokovic.

:20:46. > :20:51.Thank you very much. SUE BARKER: That was earlier today.

:20:52. > :20:56.There is no statue of Andy Murray here at Wimbledon yet. There is a

:20:57. > :21:02.picture of him at the practice courts. Last year, we finally saw an

:21:03. > :21:09.end to that 77-year wait for a British man to win Wimbledon. It was

:21:10. > :21:18.in 1977 that we celebrated the last Women's Singles winner, Virginia

:21:19. > :21:22.Wade. What a day for that. She is with us this year working for the

:21:23. > :21:28.team, commentating on the matches and no doubt will be enjoying seeing

:21:29. > :21:32.these pictures again. So, let's hear from Virginia, she is with Rishi

:21:33. > :21:39.Persad. RISHI PERSAD: There is a bust which

:21:40. > :21:43.commemorates Virginia Wade and I have the real thing alongside me.

:21:44. > :21:47.You came back to defend the title in 1978. You got to the semifinals.

:21:48. > :21:51.What is the different mindset Andy has to overcome this year? You are

:21:52. > :21:56.so thrilled that the tradition is there, that you come back and start,

:21:57. > :22:00.you open up on the Centre Court. For the men, it is the first day, so the

:22:01. > :22:06.court is perfect. So it is a big thrill. I think Andy is playing well

:22:07. > :22:11.enough to win. Obviously, there's a long time between now and two weeks'

:22:12. > :22:16.time. He's playing just as well as the other top guys. I can't see any

:22:17. > :22:21.dark horses who I think could come and beat him, even on a phenomenal

:22:22. > :22:25.day. I do think there might be more pressure on him because the other

:22:26. > :22:29.players are - he's got all the attention on him and the other

:22:30. > :22:32.players can get on with what they have to do without that extra

:22:33. > :22:37.pressure. The British press have been a bit naughty, picking up on

:22:38. > :22:41.one or two things you said about the appointment of Amelie Mauresmo. What

:22:42. > :22:46.is actually your stance on this? Well, I was surprised. I think along

:22:47. > :22:54.with everybody else I was surprised. Leading up to it, like Andy, he is a

:22:55. > :22:59.past master at playing chess and we had the feeling he was doing a bit

:23:00. > :23:05.of that. Then Amelie was a surprise. She is a wonderful person. She was a

:23:06. > :23:10.fantastic tennis player. And maybe she's not going to give him the

:23:11. > :23:13.Lendl forehand, but what she is going to do - and I have seen from

:23:14. > :23:17.the pictures, they are both smiling on the court. That could be the

:23:18. > :23:26.relaxation mode and the confidence mode and certainly she had success

:23:27. > :23:31.with Marion Bartoli, so there's no reason why a woman shouldn't be a

:23:32. > :23:33.good coach. In fact, you have to compensate by having almost

:23:34. > :23:41.sometimes better technique because you don't have the strength and you

:23:42. > :23:44.think about the game. Thank you very much for your time. There you have

:23:45. > :23:47.it, the real thoughts of Virginia Wade.

:23:48. > :23:52.SUE BARKER: Never doubted it for a moment. It is interesting, we were

:23:53. > :23:59.talking about it that all the focus seems to be on Amelie, but in

:24:00. > :24:04.fact... I want to ask one question. You interrupting, too? I'm getting

:24:05. > :24:10.used to it! Do you remember - that was my first Wimbledon. I can't

:24:11. > :24:19.remember who she beat in the semis that year. I don't remember, I was

:24:20. > :24:25.one-year-old. Sue, do you remember? I knew... I'm sorry. What a day that

:24:26. > :24:31.was when Virginia won again. Start over. Thank you for reminding me of

:24:32. > :24:37.one of my worst days in tennis. That is a great day, you got to the

:24:38. > :24:44.semies of a major. I lost in the semis, too! You then went on to...

:24:45. > :24:57.Look at the smile. 2014, here we are. Talking about Murray's camp and

:24:58. > :25:04.Amelie Mauresmo, but Danny is a big part of that team? Absolutely. He

:25:05. > :25:10.has been doing the day-to-day work, scouting all the opponents, so you

:25:11. > :25:17.had Lendl come in and add what he could add, now it is Amelie. The

:25:18. > :25:22.focus should not be on Amelie. Andy said that the other day. He has his

:25:23. > :25:31.team in place and then he brings in, now it was Lendl, now it is

:25:32. > :25:37.Mauresmo, as advisors. You said, Lendl going - Le in, dl brought him

:25:38. > :25:45.-- Lendl brought him right up to believe in himself and he will miss

:25:46. > :25:49.that? The stage that Ivan was in his career and Andy was, it was eerily

:25:50. > :25:52.similar. He turned out to be one of the greatest players that ever

:25:53. > :25:59.lived. I think that made a lot of sense. You alluded to the fact that

:26:00. > :26:03.Amelie Mauresmo had some - she had learned a lot from some difficult

:26:04. > :26:07.losses and was able to win a Wimbledon and an Australian Open.

:26:08. > :26:14.And overcoming nerves? Exactly. She's been coaching. This isn't the

:26:15. > :26:18.first time she's coached: -- coached. Does she have locker room

:26:19. > :26:21.access to the men? A bit like you, Mac, she is not allowed in!

:26:22. > :26:30.We are even now. It will be a long fortnight! Andy Murray is on Centre

:26:31. > :26:35.Court, a big day for him and for David Goffin. Let's hear from him.

:26:36. > :26:38.Welcome to Wimbledon. The best possible welcome for you in many

:26:39. > :26:42.ways in that you get a chance to play Andy Murray in the very first

:26:43. > :26:48.match on Centre Court. How are you feeling about that? It will be a

:26:49. > :26:52.difficult match. To play against Andy, it's an honour to open the

:26:53. > :26:59.tournament on the Centre Court. It will be a great experience, I think.

:27:00. > :27:02.A great moment for me. As a professional tennis player, is there

:27:03. > :27:05.part of you that is cursing your luck that you should draw the

:27:06. > :27:14.defending champion in the first round? Of course. It's probably the

:27:15. > :27:19.most difficult match of the draw, but I'm feeling good on grass. I

:27:20. > :27:30.hope it will be a good match for me. Even if it is Andy in front of me, I

:27:31. > :27:34.will try to use the moment of Centre Court to play a good match. The

:27:35. > :27:38.match against Federer is the match that many people remember you for.

:27:39. > :27:41.You had lost in qualifying, but you got in as a lucky loser and made it

:27:42. > :27:46.to the fourth round. What are your memories of your run there that

:27:47. > :27:54.year? It was amazing. I was almost at home when I lost qualification

:27:55. > :28:02.and I had the chance to play again and I won three matches in Paris, so

:28:03. > :28:07.it was like, it was my first main draw in Grand Slams, it was like a

:28:08. > :28:11.dream and a lot of memories in Paris.

:28:12. > :28:14.SUE BARKER: He did well in that match against Federer when he took

:28:15. > :28:18.that opening set a few years ago. How is he as a player? Does he have

:28:19. > :28:24.the weapons on a grass court? He has weapons and he's got a lot of feel.

:28:25. > :28:28.He is a natural tennis player. It is like a heavyweight playing a

:28:29. > :28:32.welterweight. He doesn't consistently hurt you enough. He has

:28:33. > :28:38.to take chances to take control of points. He is not big enough and he

:28:39. > :28:42.can't wait on Murray. That is why he's dropped to 104 in the world or

:28:43. > :28:47.something. That guy has the talent to be Top 40. He was Top 50 and

:28:48. > :28:51.everyone was talking about him as one of the emerging young players to

:28:52. > :28:59.challenge for the top? I think that you can see - you should respect the

:29:00. > :29:02.guys more like David Ferrer and Nishikori establishing himself as a

:29:03. > :29:06.Top 10 player. You realise the difficulty if you don't have that

:29:07. > :29:12.height or a big weapon - his weapon is his hands. He can't use them

:29:13. > :29:16.enough in important moments and he's also lost confidence. It seems like

:29:17. > :29:20.he is always playing guys much bigger and stronger than him. That

:29:21. > :29:25.is much harder these days. We will hear more from Mac before the match

:29:26. > :29:31.at 1.00pm. Murray in the top four. If you look at the big three, those

:29:32. > :29:36.big three - you look at the record, Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

:29:37. > :29:41.You look at them - seven titles Roger Federer has won, Rafael Nadal

:29:42. > :29:47.two wins here, but Djokovic just the one here. The question mark this

:29:48. > :29:52.year is Rafa. Is he 100%? How will his knee hold up? He struggled with

:29:53. > :29:56.it last year. Those five years in a row that he played winning the two

:29:57. > :30:00.times and Djokovic has to be disappointed after last year,

:30:01. > :30:03.getting to the final. It's - we talked about this at the start of

:30:04. > :30:06.the show. It seems a stretch to think that somebody outside the top

:30:07. > :30:18.four is going to win here. These guys have been so good here.

:30:19. > :30:26.last 37 Grand Slams. Did you think this rivalry would go on so long?

:30:27. > :30:32.Yes, the more that you would see them turning in and turning at, they

:30:33. > :30:36.seemed that far ahead. I remember when I first came on the tour, and

:30:37. > :30:41.Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors were dominating and I tried to be a bit

:30:42. > :30:49.like Djokovic, just getting into the mix consistently. These are the

:30:50. > :30:54.odds, OK? Is this the order you would have them in? It is a pretty

:30:55. > :31:05.accurate order. I like that quite a bit. Grigor Dimitrov 20-1, with a

:31:06. > :31:14.bat? He is the one I would pick. You read my mind! And he is in the area

:31:15. > :31:20.of this guide by the name of Andy Murray! Not too far down the line.

:31:21. > :31:26.-- of this guy. With what he has done, you has the best shot of one

:31:27. > :31:33.of the top guys does not win it. Of the young guys that are hungry, like

:31:34. > :31:37.Ryan Harrison, who he plays, a guy like Donald Young, trying to hold on

:31:38. > :31:44.and say, give me respect, that is tricky. He is actually playing some

:31:45. > :31:47.guys younger than him. I will ask you who you think will win the

:31:48. > :31:53.title, you can have your say as well, vote via the live Wimbledon

:31:54. > :31:57.page on the BBC website or send a tweet using the surname of the

:31:58. > :32:00.player that you think will win. This will close just before 1pm and we

:32:01. > :32:06.will announce the final result shortly afterwards. Full terms and

:32:07. > :32:14.conditions available on the BBC sport website. Who will win

:32:15. > :32:20.Wimbledon? Lindsay, where would you put your vote? Novak has been my

:32:21. > :32:24.pick. I am curious to see how his arm and wrist feel through the first

:32:25. > :32:29.few rounds. He moves so well on grass. He's very comfortable playing

:32:30. > :32:35.out there. I think it is going to be tough for Murray to defend just one

:32:36. > :32:43.year later. I will go with Novak. Exactly the same feeling. I feel

:32:44. > :32:47.that Novak, now he has been in 13 or 14 Grand Slam finals, so he's trying

:32:48. > :32:52.to approach with the consistency that Roger Federer had all those

:32:53. > :32:57.years, which is rather remarkable. The reason why that man who came by

:32:58. > :33:03.about half an hour ago was this reason and Boris Becker could add

:33:04. > :33:07.that little extra bit at Wimbledon. He has only won one grandson out of

:33:08. > :33:12.its last six grand slam finals. It is nice to get there, but once you

:33:13. > :33:19.get there it becomes an acceptable if you don't win some of them.

:33:20. > :33:23.Lindsay, the ladies championship? I would be surprised if it was not

:33:24. > :33:26.Serena Williams. She has not had the 12 months she would have liked after

:33:27. > :33:31.winning the US Open, she comes here not having won in Australia or won

:33:32. > :33:36.the French. She wants to tie with Chris Evatt and Martinez are badly

:33:37. > :33:40.at 18 titles. She's very, double on grass, and that she is injured I

:33:41. > :33:45.feel it is her title this year. She is 5-4, the favourite, what about

:33:46. > :33:49.Maria Sharapova? She did not like grass last year. I think she is

:33:50. > :33:53.better on play them on grass, I never thought I would say that

:33:54. > :34:00.especially when I saw her ten years ago beating Serena. Eugenie

:34:01. > :34:04.Bouchard, it would be fantastic for the sport if she made that next

:34:05. > :34:09.step. She looks great at the French, she made the semifinals, she had a

:34:10. > :34:13.shot but Maria was fighting unbelievably well. You've got to

:34:14. > :34:20.hand it to her. Eugenie Bouchard likes grass more than play, they

:34:21. > :34:23.say. If that is true... She did well in the Juniors competition. She has

:34:24. > :34:28.proved she can win on the grass. I think she's ready to make that

:34:29. > :34:33.move. Thank you very much. Let's find out what the weather holds. It

:34:34. > :34:39.is warm and hot and sticky. Let's have the weather forecast with

:34:40. > :34:43.Carol. On the outside courts, play is underway already, some nifty

:34:44. > :34:48.hats, sensibly because it is very warm. The forecast for today is

:34:49. > :34:52.after the cloudy start, we will see sunny spells. We've had them

:34:53. > :34:55.already. Through the afternoon the cloud will come and goes we will

:34:56. > :35:00.have sunny intervals and gentle breezes. When the clouds does come

:35:01. > :35:03.over it is very welcome because the temperature falls slightly. In the

:35:04. > :35:08.latter part of the afternoon and into the evening we are at risk of a

:35:09. > :35:13.shower. A low risk, about 40%, but we could see it, equally they could

:35:14. > :35:18.just slip by and we could miss it altogether. Even into the evening

:35:19. > :35:24.the temperature is going to be fine, 22 Celsius, in old money, 72

:35:25. > :35:29.Fahrenheit! Sue, we are always keen to know about the pollen level and

:35:30. > :35:34.today it is very high. I heard that he was suffering a little this

:35:35. > :35:39.morning! I hope the pollen level dips -- I hear that you were

:35:40. > :35:43.suffering a little. Let's take you around the grounds. Live tennis

:35:44. > :35:49.began at 11:30am on the opening day of the Championships. At 1pm no

:35:50. > :35:53.prizes for guessing who is first on Centre Court, the reigning Wimbledon

:35:54. > :36:00.champion, Andy Murray of Britain against the very talented Belgian,

:36:01. > :36:11.David Coffin. Paul Kenny takes on Li Na Mac, the Australian champion. -

:36:12. > :36:17.Paula cannier takes an Li Na Mac. Victoria Azarenka, twice an

:36:18. > :36:21.Australian Open champion, she's only played twice since January because

:36:22. > :36:27.of a foot injury and she plays Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, now aged 32.

:36:28. > :36:32.Mac fancies his chances, triggered a trough, the Queen's champion,

:36:33. > :36:35.playing Ryan Harrison. He is one of three US men to have qualified for

:36:36. > :36:42.Wimbledon here. And Jurgen Melzer, 32, his highest rank was eight in

:36:43. > :36:46.the world and he plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is

:36:47. > :36:50.leading their head to head for-1 so he is the favourite. A selection of

:36:51. > :36:58.matches on the outside court. Tomas Berdych is out there. He's a former

:36:59. > :37:02.finalist, he is six tall but he is dwarfed by his opponent, Daniel

:37:03. > :37:09.Hanna is good, who is six foot six! A couple of giants. James Ward will

:37:10. > :37:13.be second on court and three. We'll keep you up-to-date with that. We

:37:14. > :37:22.are going to watch John Konta against showing playing - Johanna

:37:23. > :37:26.Konta against shoe a pen of China. The game is going with serve. Anne

:37:27. > :37:45.Keothavong and Sam Smith are commentating.

:37:46. > :37:56.SAM SMITH: Johanna Konta, the British and three, broke to love in

:37:57. > :38:00.the first game and has been broken, and since then it has gone with

:38:01. > :38:07.serve. Saved a break point in her last service game. She's used to be

:38:08. > :38:27.hanging on here. -- she seems to be hanging on here.

:38:28. > :38:37.The 28-year-old Peng from China, China's third best player, she comes

:38:38. > :38:39.from about an hour China's third best player, she comes

:38:40. > :38:40.from about and a half south of baking. She has twice been in the

:38:41. > :39:11.fourth round at Wimbledon. It has been a splendid start for

:39:12. > :39:16.both of them, hasn't it? I think they are both starting to settle.

:39:17. > :39:22.ANNE KEOTHAVONG: they are starting to settle, they are both out here

:39:23. > :39:29.trying to figure each other out -- it has been a splintered start for

:39:30. > :39:38.both of them. Rhys Evans ace of the match for Johanna Konta. -- the

:39:39. > :39:38.seventh ace of the match for Johanna Konta. They

:39:39. > :39:43.match for Johanna Konta. -- the seventh ace of the match for have

:39:44. > :39:47.met here on one occasion, they met in southern China and it was Johanna

:39:48. > :39:51.Konta who won very comfortably, in straight sets. That was on hard

:39:52. > :40:16.courts. And Peng is a tough customer. She

:40:17. > :40:20.really is. Grass suits her game. She is a player with big ground strokes

:40:21. > :40:31.off both wings, likes to take it early, never wants to go too far

:40:32. > :40:37.back behind the baseline. And so far she has been serving very well. She

:40:38. > :40:39.has won the majority of her points behind her first serve once she gets

:40:40. > :41:33.it into play. Always has this look of intense

:41:34. > :41:38.concentration, does Peng, but can get very, very nervous on the big

:41:39. > :41:42.moments, on the singles court, not on the doubles court because she is

:41:43. > :41:49.one half of the defending champion in the women's doubles. -- one half

:41:50. > :42:50.of the defending champions. did not connect cleanly with a

:42:51. > :42:55.backhand of the return, but it was effective. Very quick up for the

:42:56. > :43:39.forehand. Another comfortable hold. Apart from

:43:40. > :43:43.those opening couple of breaks of serve it is pretty straightforward

:43:44. > :43:48.for Peng and Johanna Konta. And, you know Johanna Konta well. She was

:43:49. > :43:51.born in Sydney, Australia, came here with her parents and she has a

:43:52. > :43:56.sister as well, when she was 14, they moved to Canary Wharf, London,

:43:57. > :44:00.they were not keen on the city so they went to Eastbourne, and she

:44:01. > :44:04.gained British citizenship a couple of years ago just before Wimbledon.

:44:05. > :44:08.You have been on Federation cup with her and have hit with her at the

:44:09. > :44:13.National tennis Centre, what's odd of character is she? A shy and

:44:14. > :44:17.unassuming girl but a very hard worker, the ultimate professional,

:44:18. > :44:24.very meta killers and how she goes about her job. Dedicates everything

:44:25. > :44:29.to her tennis. She really does. She works hard, she is a great person to

:44:30. > :44:33.practice with, -- she is very meticulous. We have had so many

:44:34. > :44:38.practice training sessions together at the National tennis Centre in

:44:39. > :44:41.Roehampton. Her mother is a dentist and her father is in the hotel

:44:42. > :45:03.business. His sister works in fashion. Johanna Konta with the new

:45:04. > :45:11.balls, on serve, at 3-4. UMPIRE: Correction, the ball was good. There

:45:12. > :45:24.isn't Hawk-Eye on this court, it is only available on the Centre Court,

:45:25. > :45:58.Court One, called to, and Godfrey. -- Court Two, and caught three.

:45:59. > :46:15.Very clean! That backhand is Konta's best shot. Staying very low

:46:16. > :46:59.on this, connecting with it right out in front of her.

:47:00. > :47:07.Just too good from Peng. Incredible angle of that backhand. -- of that

:47:08. > :48:28.backhand. A very solid hold from Konta and

:48:29. > :48:34.they should be pleased. On your screen to the right Judy Murray the

:48:35. > :48:39.Federation cup captain, next to her, Ian Bates, head of women's tennis

:48:40. > :48:41.and next to him is the coach of Johanna Konta, a Frenchman, a former

:48:42. > :49:07.ATP Tour player. Currently ranked at 60 in the world

:49:08. > :49:15.in the singles, number one in doubles, with her partner. Way of

:49:16. > :49:19.her best ranking of 14 which was three years ago when she made the

:49:20. > :49:45.fourth round at Wimbledon. -- way off.

:49:46. > :49:54.What are the strengths of Peng for Konta to have to neutralise? The

:49:55. > :49:58.first service is effective as well as flat ground strokes, Peng is good

:49:59. > :50:03.at changing the direction of the ball from the back of the court. She

:50:04. > :50:07.doesn't like to budge to far back from behind the baseline. -- too far

:50:08. > :50:29.back. Very nicely done. She is quick to

:50:30. > :50:33.see her opportunities, to take the ball out of the air, Peng is a very

:50:34. > :50:39.experienced doubles player and not afraid of getting close to the net.

:50:40. > :51:06.Very quick up to this drive volley, taking all the time away from Konta.

:51:07. > :51:19.Another very comfortable hold the Peng. -- for Peng. And, you are for

:51:20. > :51:24.your final Wimbledon, you noted is like for Johanna Konta but it is not

:51:25. > :51:31.easy, day one for a British player, a lot of distractions. It is never

:51:32. > :51:37.easy for any of the British players. There are always huge expectations.

:51:38. > :51:43.This is the one tournament where you want to play your best tennis, show

:51:44. > :51:48.everyone what you are able to do on the tennis court, you are aware that

:51:49. > :51:52.it is where you receive the most attention so you want to maximise

:51:53. > :51:56.it. Is the sort of day like today, where'd it is beautiful out there,

:51:57. > :52:01.where you leave your phone in the locker room and maybe don't switch

:52:02. > :52:04.it on for a few days! And is best not to have your phone on leading up

:52:05. > :52:08.to Wimbledon and steering the time that you are here, it's just not

:52:09. > :52:11.worth it! The time that you are here, it's just not worth it! There

:52:12. > :52:16.are so many people trying, wishing you well and everything, which is

:52:17. > :52:22.great. She had a great leader, making the semifinals at Nottingham

:52:23. > :52:25.and winning a round in Edgbaston. And she beat one talented player at

:52:26. > :52:40.Eastbourne is coming in some confidence. -- she had a great lead

:52:41. > :52:59.up to Wimbledon. -- so, coming in with some confidence.

:53:00. > :53:08.Excellent play by Konta. She is always a much more effective player

:53:09. > :53:13.when she has that aggressive mindset and looks to get at the court. -- up

:53:14. > :53:43.the court. That's better! Hitting through that

:53:44. > :53:48.forehand. That is a big change, that forehand seems to have improved an

:53:49. > :53:59.awful lot busier. Something she has been working very hard on, with her

:54:00. > :54:30.coach. That Mac it seems to have improved an awful lot, this year.

:54:31. > :54:39.The two biggest improvements Konta has made to her game is her forehand

:54:40. > :54:44.because she used to get awfully tight on that side of the game, but

:54:45. > :55:44.also using the slice, adding variety to her game.

:55:45. > :55:52.Just makes this game slightly more complicated. She has won a lot of

:55:53. > :55:55.matches this year and has just broken into the world's top 100 for

:55:56. > :56:35.the very first time. from Konta. It was a game that

:56:36. > :56:40.looked so comfortable. And it just got away from her. She needs to

:56:41. > :57:36.steal herself. Peng with set point. Well done! Konta did a great job,

:57:37. > :57:39.staying in that point, giving herself big targets, not going for

:57:40. > :57:44.anything to me other lines. These are the moments when it is great to

:57:45. > :57:49.be a British player, these stands packed, from the first point of the

:57:50. > :57:54.match. The crowd right behind Konta the whole way. -- not going for

:57:55. > :58:16.anything to near the lines. A superb angle that she found from

:58:17. > :58:51.that! That time, not quite balanced on the

:58:52. > :58:57.backhand, Konta, a little too upright. The ball was moving away

:58:58. > :59:02.from her. A lot of experience with Peng in her ninth Wimbledon and

:59:03. > :59:04.Johanna Konta in only her third, a direct entry this year for the first

:59:05. > :59:42.time. That first serve percentage is

:59:43. > :59:49.really costing Johanna Konta. Automatically she is on the back

:59:50. > :00:06.foot of Peng's return. Peng with a second set point.

:00:07. > :00:15.ANNE KEOTHAVONG: She needs to keep her head up, keep getting up, up,

:00:16. > :00:45.up. She's keeping the ball boys and the

:00:46. > :00:50.ball girls very busy, but doing the right thing, taking her time.

:00:51. > :02:05.Absolutely. She is never one to rush, Johanna Konta.

:02:06. > :02:15.She hustled so well. You have to admire the determination of Peng.

:02:16. > :02:19.Maybe it is just first-day nerves for Konta. She has to put them

:02:20. > :02:49.behind her because she is facing a third set point in this game.

:02:50. > :03:08.A few deep breaths needed for Konta right here.

:03:09. > :03:26.It is such a good strategy to go back behind Shuai Peng, send her the

:03:27. > :03:29.wrong way, she doesn't turn terribly well, so Konta could yet escape this

:03:30. > :03:37.difficult game. UMPIRE: Time violation warning, Miss

:03:38. > :05:28.Konta. Best point of the match for Konta.

:05:29. > :05:32.That was a really good response from Konta after the code violation. She

:05:33. > :06:14.has to keep going after it. Very well played by Peng. That is

:06:15. > :06:15.where she is so effective, so good at changing the direction of play.

:06:16. > :07:19.Very tough to read. A little wild. It is always tempting

:07:20. > :07:24.to look for short cuts when you have been in a game and serving as long

:07:25. > :07:28.as this. Coming up to quarter of an hour now. Peng has a fourth set

:07:29. > :07:48.point. Couldn't quite make it and a very

:07:49. > :08:10.determined Shuai Peng wraps up the opening set in 52 minutes 6-4.

:08:11. > :08:40.SUE BARKER: All eyes on Centre Court very shortly for the emergence of

:08:41. > :08:49.the defending men's champion, Andy Murray. What a moment that will be.

:08:50. > :08:56.For the meantime, we will stay on Court 12.

:08:57. > :09:09.SAM SMITH: To the right is Court 2. Matches going on at the back is

:09:10. > :09:17.Court 8 and Court 9. It is a very busy end of the ground. Peng was

:09:18. > :09:24.tough there, wasn't she? Is that just experience?

:09:25. > :09:28.ANNE KEOTHAVONG: It was. Konta, who has gone off on a bathroom break,

:09:29. > :09:33.got a little tight towards the end. I don't think we have seen the best

:09:34. > :09:38.of Johanna Konta just yet. We take a look at the first set summary. What

:09:39. > :09:44.was the main difference for you, Anne? Peng's first serve percentage

:09:45. > :09:52.was not that much better than Konta's. She really attacked Konta's

:09:53. > :09:56.second serve really well. Konta was under pressure straightaway. She

:09:57. > :09:59.started well, Konta, broke to love and we thought we are away here? The

:10:00. > :10:03.first three points of the match were all clean winners from Johanna

:10:04. > :10:12.Konta. It was the unforced errors that cost her in the end. What sort

:10:13. > :10:17.of character is she? She's not there at all at the moment, she's just

:10:18. > :10:21.ended off to the bathroom. She will be giving herself a good talking to.

:10:22. > :10:25.Like I said, we didn't see the best from Johanna Konta in that opening

:10:26. > :10:30.set. What sort of character is she? Is she a young woman that digs in

:10:31. > :10:34.and fights in these kind of moments? She has no choice but to find a way

:10:35. > :10:41.right now! This is one of the biggest moments in her young career.

:10:42. > :10:45.She's gone off on that bathroom break. I'm sure she will be giving

:10:46. > :10:50.herself a good talking to in there. Hopefully, she will come back out

:10:51. > :10:59.refreshed, energised, pick up her intensity. We know Shuai Peng can

:11:00. > :11:02.play better tennis, too. She weathered the storm and did all the

:11:03. > :11:10.basic things as well as she could have. A very determined character,

:11:11. > :11:16.Peng. She was born in 1986, the Year of the Cow, which means she is

:11:17. > :11:19.hard-working, dependable, independent-thinking and Thursday is

:11:20. > :11:20.her lucky day. So it is a shame it is Monday!

:11:21. > :11:30.She has a lucky day, but not an unlucky day. She has a lucky day.

:11:31. > :11:40.She is an outstanding doubles player. She won the doubles title

:11:41. > :11:45.last year and then they have come off winning the French Open for the

:11:46. > :11:49.first time and tough to combine, isn't it? She went out first round

:11:50. > :11:56.in Eastbourne, she hasn't had a lot of preparation here. Not sure how

:11:57. > :12:00.you combine both. She seems to enjoy her doubles and some players do.

:12:01. > :12:03.Players are often more relaxed on the doubles court than they are on

:12:04. > :12:13.the singles. Barely a breath of wind here at

:12:14. > :12:21.Wimbledon on the very first day of the Championships. Konta a set down

:12:22. > :12:48.with it all to do. Peng to start the second.

:12:49. > :13:47.It is not easy having to have longer than the two minutes at the change

:13:48. > :13:49.of ends. Your adrenaline levels fall. Peng is making a sluggish

:13:50. > :13:57.start here. And Konta breaking to love just as

:13:58. > :14:16.she did at the start of the match. So, tactically, would you like to

:14:17. > :14:23.see anything a little different from Konta? Do you feel she is - what

:14:24. > :14:29.would that man say? Does she need to - has she been going at the right

:14:30. > :14:33.areas? I do feel like Konta needs to step up her aggression. She needs to

:14:34. > :14:37.improve that first serve percentage. That first serve is her strength.

:14:38. > :14:40.When she serves well, the rest of her game is better as well. She gets

:14:41. > :14:57.a lot of confidence from serving well.

:14:58. > :15:12.Konta will have to step up the use of the angles in this second set,

:15:13. > :16:22.really get Shuai Peng on the run. Much better intense despite that

:16:23. > :16:27.missed backhand from Konta. There's been a couple of tight calls on that

:16:28. > :16:28.line. Just to the left of our commentary box, so we don't have the

:16:29. > :17:03.best view of it. That's good. A lot of kick and depth

:17:04. > :17:06.on that second serve from Konta. There's a wonderful freshness to day

:17:07. > :17:10.one of the Championships, these courts would have been played on on

:17:11. > :17:12.Saturday and maybe by a few members in May. They are barely trodden on

:17:13. > :17:21.these courts. Johanna Konta leads 2-0 and a break

:17:22. > :18:18.in the second set. SUE BARKER: Johanna fighting hard on

:18:19. > :18:22.Court 12. If you want to continue watching that match, it is live on

:18:23. > :18:25.the red button. We are going to be heading to Centre Court for the

:18:26. > :18:32.defending champion, Andy Murray, in a moment. Other matches on the red

:18:33. > :18:38.button - Tomas Berdych is in trouble. A former finalist here.

:18:39. > :18:42.He has dropped the opening set to Victor Hanescu of Romania. That is

:18:43. > :18:59.on the red button, too. Over on Court 3, Samantha Stosur is

:19:00. > :19:04.facing match point, match point for Yanina Wickmayer. She was ranked 12

:19:05. > :19:08.in the world four years ago. We will stay with this to see if this point,

:19:09. > :19:14.if she can clinch victory, and a famous victory and put the 17th

:19:15. > :19:33.seed, Stosur of Australia, out of the Championships.

:19:34. > :19:41.That is out, although they are asking for Hawk-Eye to be used in

:19:42. > :19:46.that match. We will wait to see if that is out. It certainly looked out

:19:47. > :19:53.from where we were watching. Indeed, it's in. That still means it is

:19:54. > :19:57.match point to Wickmayer. So, that match continues. If you want to

:19:58. > :20:05.continue watching that - and we will update you on BBC Two - you can

:20:06. > :20:13.watch it online. Over on Court 18, Sloane Stephens was in trouble, 6-2

:20:14. > :20:17.she lost the first set to Maria Kirilenko. Her ranking has dropped.

:20:18. > :20:23.So much is expected of Sloane Stephens. She was 4-2 up in the

:20:24. > :20:27.second set. It is now 4-4. We will keep you up-to-date on Two. You can

:20:28. > :20:32.follow it online if you want to. All eyes will be on Centre Court in a

:20:33. > :20:35.moment to see this man, Andy Murray, start the defence of his title.

:20:36. > :20:44.She's been on the practice courts this morning with his coach, Amelie

:20:45. > :20:51.Mauresmo, his good friend and coach, but have they got everything right

:20:52. > :20:55.for the defence of the title? Last year was a real where were you

:20:56. > :21:00.moment. Before Andy returns to the scene of his triumph, let's go back

:21:01. > :21:03.to last year's final and take a look at that final game that he won

:21:04. > :21:06.against Novak Djokovic that had us all on the edge of our seats.

:21:07. > :21:13.ANDREW CASTLE: Novak Djokovic is out and ready as Andy Murray looks to

:21:14. > :21:22.put 77 years of hurt behind British tennis. That last game was torture,

:21:23. > :21:28.torture, I could hear my heart. BORIS BECKER: All eyes on Murray. He

:21:29. > :21:56.is a brick wall. 40-0. 40-15. Then the next thing is

:21:57. > :22:04.deuce. Like in a blink, it seemed like in a blink it was deuce and I

:22:05. > :22:07.thought oh no. This isn't real. This can't happen. This can't happen. Oh

:22:08. > :22:21.goodness! One of the shots he hits here, it is

:22:22. > :22:30.so lucky. ANDREW CASTLE: I don't believe that!

:22:31. > :22:37.You lucky sod. Jam mi! -- Jamm y. There's a good chance Djokovic could

:22:38. > :22:47.come back into this. ANDREW CASTLE: The resilience.

:22:48. > :22:51.Wonderful, wonderful stuff. This is the boy digging deep! I couldn't

:22:52. > :23:04.breathe after some of these points. Any point will do.

:23:05. > :23:58.BORIS BECKER: Any point will do. UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Murray.

:23:59. > :23:59.ANDREW CASTLE: The waiting is over. Andy Murray is the Wimbledon

:24:00. > :24:19.Champion! He's won Wimbledon? Yes! There were so many people out there

:24:20. > :24:25.that were supporting and hoping you could do it. It is a good job I'm

:24:26. > :24:30.not thinking about that when I throw up to serve.

:24:31. > :24:46.Maggs, come. SUE BARKER: Even Maggie was cheering

:24:47. > :24:54.him on. If you want to see more of that, When Andy Won Wimbledon, that

:24:55. > :24:59.is tonight at 10.35pm on BBC One. Here on Centre Court, Mac is back

:25:00. > :25:02.and welcome to Tim. Yanina Wickmayer has beaten Samantha Stosur, so

:25:03. > :25:05.already a seed out of the Championships on day one. What is

:25:06. > :25:13.going to happen here, Tim? It is amazing when you see a result

:25:14. > :25:18.like that. The Championships is under way. The seed of players have

:25:19. > :25:24.to be alert and the defending champions have to be alert. I think

:25:25. > :25:27.Goffin has only ever won two matches on grass, he's only won three

:25:28. > :25:31.matches this year on the tour. It is a good opportunity for Andy to get

:25:32. > :25:36.his title defence under way. This is a tradition, isn't it, that is

:25:37. > :25:42.unique to this tournament. Did you enjoy coming back here first on?

:25:43. > :25:51.Very much so. They considered changing the rule when I first won.

:25:52. > :25:54.Thankfully, we started to restore confidence in each other before it

:25:55. > :25:57.was too late. I personally think that all the tournaments should do

:25:58. > :26:02.something along these lines. It is awesome. As we were talking up

:26:03. > :26:07.there, there isn't the pressure, it doesn't feel like the pressure

:26:08. > :26:11.anymore on Andy. That's gone now? I think John has touched on it a few

:26:12. > :26:16.times before. For me, I feel like he did the hard work, given our history

:26:17. > :26:18.in this country, 77 years since a British male player had won the

:26:19. > :26:22.Championships. Some people are saying it is 77 years since a

:26:23. > :26:26.British male player has defended the title. You will never please

:26:27. > :26:31.everyone. For me, it was such a monumental achievement. You saw that

:26:32. > :26:36.last game in the highlights. It was incredible, the atmosphere.

:26:37. > :26:40.Hopefully, Andy can come out there and embrace it. It was an incredible

:26:41. > :26:44.achievement. No-one can ever take that away from him. If he goes out

:26:45. > :26:49.there and enjoys it, I'm sure he will come through. Yeah. I'm sure

:26:50. > :26:52.Judy will enjoy it more. She said it was agony watching that last year.

:26:53. > :26:56.The whole family, the whole team feels the pressure and the

:26:57. > :27:02.expectation. Probably a bit worried about the year that he's had so far?

:27:03. > :27:09.They are worried, of course. It's a turn for the better. Even though he

:27:10. > :27:12.got thrashed by Rafa at the French, that was a great result for him to

:27:13. > :27:16.get there. In terms of his confidence, in terms of his

:27:17. > :27:20.preparation, he's as well prepared for this event than any event this

:27:21. > :27:26.year. Let me just add one thing to what Tim said about coming back and

:27:27. > :27:29.trying to defend your title. I went through total different things and a

:27:30. > :27:32.lot of mine were self-inflicted, the pressure, the press, everyone after

:27:33. > :27:39.me. I remember thinking to myself, if I ever win this damn thing, I'm

:27:40. > :27:44.never coming back! Then the moment, that feeling, that exhilarating

:27:45. > :27:51.feeling of winning that last point, the first thing I thought of was I

:27:52. > :27:55.want to win this again. And so for Andy, he's - of course, any time you

:27:56. > :27:59.play any player, especially what he's been through, is under

:28:00. > :28:03.pressure. Now, of course, now that he's done it once, they will start

:28:04. > :28:09.to say he can do it again. There is less pressure. There is still

:28:10. > :28:13.pressure. I bet he wants it more than before, or no? That is what we

:28:14. > :28:20.will find out. It will be interesting to watch. For me, the

:28:21. > :28:24.first set is an important aspect. He said yesterday he is going to be

:28:25. > :28:26.nervous. He understands the history and tradition walking out on the

:28:27. > :28:31.first Monday as defending champion. I think it will be interesting for

:28:32. > :28:36.John and I to watch how his feet move early on and how aggressive he

:28:37. > :28:41.can be. If he can, if he can impose himself. In a nice way, he needs to

:28:42. > :28:45.go out there and bully Goffin. He has more weapons. He can dictate

:28:46. > :28:49.play. It was a few years ago we saw Goffin play Federer at the French

:28:50. > :28:53.and we saw what talent he has. Murray will be on his game and ready

:28:54. > :28:57.and raring to go. Here they come. Out to Centre Court. I was with Andy

:28:58. > :29:01.earlier this week, he said he slept really well before the final last

:29:02. > :29:04.year. He didn't feel nervous at this bit, just the first two or three

:29:05. > :29:10.games and then you lose it. I challenge that call! I can't believe

:29:11. > :29:15.he slept well before last year's final. It is hard to sleep before a

:29:16. > :29:18.first-round match. You are more amped up because it is about to

:29:19. > :29:24.begin. There is no feeling like it. I had one occasion where I came as

:29:25. > :29:37.defending champion and they asked my opponent heads or tails and he was

:29:38. > :29:43.like... I've got this guy now and he couldn't get out head or tails. Some

:29:44. > :29:46.of the fans have been camping out since Saturday morning to make sure

:29:47. > :29:50.they are here. This is historic as well, to see a British man come here

:29:51. > :29:52.to defend the title. It is great to see the Centre Court is very, very

:29:53. > :29:54.nearly packed. That is the way see the Centre Court is very, very

:29:55. > :29:55.nearly packed. That is it should be to give him a massive

:29:56. > :29:56.nearly packed. That is it should be to give him a welcome and a well

:29:57. > :30:08.done for last year. appropriate. It is overt, he won it.

:30:09. > :30:53.Here they come. You were right, a standing ovation.

:30:54. > :30:59.A great ovation for Andy, making him feel very much at home. And he will

:31:00. > :31:03.do, happy memories. From the Olympics and the last two

:31:04. > :31:05.Wimbledons. We hope it is happy memories because he speaks about

:31:06. > :31:11.that final game, not remembering it at all, but the tournament was an

:31:12. > :31:14.incredible achievement last year. I'm sure for him to get back on

:31:15. > :31:21.court and received a standing ovation like that is fantastic. He

:31:22. > :31:26.will be keen to get out on court, get the legs moving, and get

:31:27. > :31:33.underway. I just felt chills and I'm commentating! Something tells me he

:31:34. > :31:37.is feeling pretty good. Did you get a standing ovation? Sometimes I

:31:38. > :31:39.enjoy working with you and other times, I'm not so sure. I think you

:31:40. > :32:06.know the answer. UMPIRE: times, I'm not so sure. I think you

:32:07. > :32:10.Problems. Having a little trouble with his microphone there. We cannot

:32:11. > :32:15.listen for the coin toss but it looks as though David is certainly

:32:16. > :32:22.won the toss. He managed to say something out there at least. Just

:32:23. > :32:27.looking at his biography, he is five foot 11. He does not look that all.

:32:28. > :32:34.Andy is six foot three. We spoke about this earlier, but this really

:32:35. > :32:37.is a case of comparing a heavyweight boxer to a middleweight or

:32:38. > :32:43.welterweight. This guy cannot hurt him. He has some great hands and

:32:44. > :32:49.love the way he plays, I think as far as tennis skills, he is top 40.

:32:50. > :32:53.Because it is so physical, he gets beat up by stronger guys. And that

:32:54. > :32:58.is why he has lost his confidence. He does not know if he can survive

:32:59. > :33:04.in this type of two. And that is why you see him with a ranking below

:33:05. > :33:10.100. A couple of years ago, it took his opponents a while to work out

:33:11. > :33:12.his strengths and weaknesses. He got up to 42 in the world and you saw

:33:13. > :33:18.him really playing with the confidence and momentum to win

:33:19. > :33:23.matches, but the players worked out his game and then he struggled. He

:33:24. > :33:31.has only won three matches this tour. Think it is a tough ask today.

:33:32. > :33:35.We asked you to vote to say who you thought would win Wimbledon. What

:33:36. > :33:42.would you expect? I would expect that they are going to put Murray as

:33:43. > :33:49.number one, Roger Federer as number two, Nadal three and Djokovic... No.

:33:50. > :33:56.Let's have a look. Novak Djokavic, 36% of the vote. Rafa Nadal, 23%.

:33:57. > :34:08.24% for Andy Murray, second favourite. Roger Federer, only 8%.

:34:09. > :34:15.And Grigor Dimitrov, only 3%. Along with Stanislav Wawrinka. I would not

:34:16. > :34:23.disagree with that. Djokovic has had some tough results, but he has won

:34:24. > :34:26.here before. He knows his way around a grass court. I would be surprised

:34:27. > :34:32.if the winner is going to come from outside the top four. Rafa Nadal and

:34:33. > :34:36.Roger, given their performances last year, they will be keen to get into

:34:37. > :34:46.the tournament. I do not see them losing early. If they get a run on,

:34:47. > :34:50.they will both be so strong. Especially in the second week. And

:34:51. > :35:00.with Rafa Nadal, the more he gets confident, that offer he gets. It

:35:01. > :35:05.will be less slippy, more to his liking in the second week. That is

:35:06. > :35:10.where it gets tough Roger, to beat Nadal for example, or Murray or

:35:11. > :35:16.Djokovic. These guys, at this stage, you could do one, and this is the

:35:17. > :35:21.best chance he has got, or both, and some other top-notch opposition, I

:35:22. > :35:26.don't know if you can go all the way. Andy is up against David

:35:27. > :35:30.Goffin, and we talk about a happy hunting ground, but also what a

:35:31. > :35:36.great service on paper. He has the best grass court record. Yes. I

:35:37. > :35:43.would not read into the match ten days ago and Queens. He had eight

:35:44. > :35:47.set points in the first set Sony should probably won that. But given

:35:48. > :35:52.his grass court form over the last few years, he plays as well as

:35:53. > :35:59.anyone. I think Federer would say record is better than anyone's. --

:36:00. > :36:05.his record. This is a tough surface to defend on. That is why Federer, I

:36:06. > :36:11.think, has a chance to compete. He is the most aggressive. As far as

:36:12. > :36:16.match at go, this must be quite nice. You will get a lot of rhythm

:36:17. > :36:21.against this guy. It is a good match to start with if you can win it. He

:36:22. > :36:25.is a bit streaky. He can take the ball early and think he should. He

:36:26. > :36:29.should try to make things happen. But I'm not sure he is confident

:36:30. > :36:33.enough to do that. But one thing you knows for sure, he will not get

:36:34. > :36:45.blown off the court. He is going to be in every service game. Goffin is

:36:46. > :36:49.not known for his return. And Murray did not do as well as he would have

:36:50. > :36:55.liked to have done at the Queens club. But he has been your everyday

:36:56. > :36:59.and he is very used it. If you ask me about his chances seven weeks

:37:00. > :37:05.ago, I would have had a bigger question mark next to his name

:37:06. > :37:09.because he did not have the form. But after Roland Garros, getting

:37:10. > :37:15.five wins under his belt, and getting beaten easily by Nadal,

:37:16. > :37:18.well, most people do over five sets! But he has had plenty of time to

:37:19. > :37:24.prepare and recharge the batteries, make the adjustments. I think he has

:37:25. > :37:28.a good chance. The thing to look out for is how proactive years from the

:37:29. > :37:32.baseline. If he gets reactive and let his opponent dictates, that is

:37:33. > :37:38.when life is difficult. If he can stand up on the baseline and

:37:39. > :37:41.dictate, I do not see him having any trouble. That is what Ivan Lendl

:37:42. > :37:47.demanded, aggression, to attack the player. He has a tendency to

:37:48. > :37:56.counterpunch. If you remember the year that Amelie Mauresmo beat

:37:57. > :38:03.Justin Hannon in the final, I remember, correct me if I'm wrong,

:38:04. > :38:08.but I believe it was Nadal and Federer, serving and volleying more

:38:09. > :38:12.than the men. Amelie Mauresmo was the type of player who likes to play

:38:13. > :38:17.like that. And that is my long-winded way of saying that I

:38:18. > :38:21.would expect that she would be expecting autumn the man thing might

:38:22. > :38:24.be too strong a word, pushing Andy to do the same thing that Tim talked

:38:25. > :38:35.about. And that helped him, obviously. Well, David made the --

:38:36. > :38:41.won the toss, and he has elected to receive them. That shows you how

:38:42. > :38:44.confident he is about his serve(!) If you say receive, maybe you have a

:38:45. > :38:51.chance to get onto the guy's server early. And if you do a good job on

:38:52. > :38:59.your own serve, you could start to build pressure. One break at 6-3,

:39:00. > :39:04.and it is over in 27 minutes. And you have not done anything. And then

:39:05. > :39:08.all of a sudden Murray has a feel for his serve and then it gets more

:39:09. > :39:13.and more difficult to hold. For me, that does not send a positive

:39:14. > :39:17.message. And they are already. The team is in place and Andy is ready

:39:18. > :39:21.to start the defence of his title. Thank you very much. Matt and Tim

:39:22. > :39:26.are on their way to the commentary box.

:39:27. > :39:34.And a very special afternoon as well. 77 years in waiting, and after

:39:35. > :39:39.another year of waiting to see Andy Murray make his appearance back on

:39:40. > :39:54.the court. We have already had the standing ovation, and now we just

:39:55. > :40:01.have a fairly raucous ovation. Expectation is high. Murray gets his

:40:02. > :40:44.defence of his Wimbledon title underway.

:40:45. > :40:54.An early glimpse of the hand skills that the Belgian possesses. His

:40:55. > :40:56.hands were very quiet last year, when he broke his wrist. He had the

:40:57. > :41:16.rest of the year off recovering. It has been a slow year for the

:41:17. > :42:08.Belgian. Looking to record just his fourth win of the season.

:42:09. > :42:18.Amelie Mauresmo is here, and John and Tim have joined me. It would've

:42:19. > :42:19.been a long afternoon for the viewers if they have not. We would

:42:20. > :43:42.not have you hanging. John MCENROE: Playing a pretty safe.

:43:43. > :43:46.-- playing it. You are a little tentative, as this match progresses

:43:47. > :43:54.I expect he will move forward more. He will take the fence. Ultimately,

:43:55. > :43:59.if he's going to win more majors, he needs to do more of that against the

:44:00. > :44:10.top guys. His volleying skills could be outstanding. Great hands. We will

:44:11. > :44:10.have to see over the next couple of years whether someone can convince

:44:11. > :45:54.him of that. That is why he is 100 in the world.

:45:55. > :46:20.To get back to that point, you cannot miss it like that.

:46:21. > :46:30.That is going to be one of the key things today, Murray taking on the

:46:31. > :46:33.first serve, and particularly bullying the second serve. There are

:46:34. > :46:37.two sides to that coin. Playing against Murray, one opportunity you

:46:38. > :47:03.have to impose yourself is on his second serve.

:47:04. > :48:19.Murray, looking to make the perfect start.

:48:20. > :48:32.Understandably tight. The ball is flying early. Good chance for Murray

:48:33. > :48:44.to take charge. Shaquille O'Neal is in the house.

:48:45. > :48:51.And this should prove to be a slam dunk for Murray in the opening

:48:52. > :48:58.round. The perfect start, getting an early break. Goffin, you feel, is in

:48:59. > :49:04.a sense of transition since 2012 where he made the fourth round. He

:49:05. > :49:08.lost to Federer, his boyhood idol. He has not made the progress that

:49:09. > :49:25.many felt that he could. His opening game was very aggressive.

:49:26. > :49:33.Given the circumstances, he is the type of player that absolutely

:49:34. > :49:38.cannot afford to beat himself. He has got to make you are in it. A

:49:39. > :49:39.couple of forehands there, he did not make Murray hit a passing shot

:49:40. > :50:34.or do anything. He did well to recover. It looked --

:50:35. > :50:35.and he looked like Tim Howard, the American goalie. Cleaning the wrong

:50:36. > :50:40.way, but making an incredible recovery. -- leaning. Helping the US

:50:41. > :50:48.ties with Portugal. Not to bring up a sore subject. Not

:50:49. > :51:23.on these shores(!) It is like years never left the

:51:24. > :51:32.court. Reminiscent of his playing from last year. He definitely had

:51:33. > :51:36.some chances to move forward but he ended up bringing Goffin into the

:51:37. > :52:07.net. He found the outside edge of the line.

:52:08. > :52:47.Murray, trying to regain his balance there.

:52:48. > :52:58.Murray goes ahead. Free love, opening set. -- three love.

:52:59. > :53:01.SUE BARKER: The perfect start. We can show you what is happening

:53:02. > :53:10.elsewhere. Good news for Yohanna Konta, who has come back to take the

:53:11. > :53:13.second set 6-3. One set all. You can follow that match on the red button

:53:14. > :53:22.if you would like to. And that is on courts 12. Over on Court number

:53:23. > :53:26.three, James Ward of Great Britain has had a tremendous year,

:53:27. > :53:29.qualifying for the French Open and beating Sam Querrey earlier in the

:53:30. > :53:35.year. He is up against Mikhail Youzhny, the 17th seed. Two all, the

:53:36. > :53:42.early stages of that match. Follow it also won the red button. And one

:53:43. > :53:49.big result to bring you as Sam stores are -- Samantha Stosur is

:53:50. > :53:56.out, losing to Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, 6-4, 6-4. That is what is

:53:57. > :54:04.happening elsewhere. Back we go centre court.

:54:05. > :54:08.Much for Goffin to ponder out there. You look at his stats and one of the

:54:09. > :54:14.areas where you feel he is going to struggle is on serve. And it has

:54:15. > :54:17.been a negative weapon for him over the last couple of years. He has

:54:18. > :54:26.served more double faults than aces. You feel as though at five foot 11,

:54:27. > :54:30.he is not that short... Djokovic did that one year, four or five years

:54:31. > :54:34.ago, he served more doubles than aces. And he finished three in the

:54:35. > :54:38.world. But when you do not have other things going for you, the

:54:39. > :54:45.server comes more critical. This guy is a good player. He gets a nice

:54:46. > :54:49.tennis ball. That is one example of how mental this game is. He does not

:54:50. > :55:04.have the same belief that he did a couple of years ago.

:55:05. > :55:10.If you do not believe in yourself as much, you start making decisions

:55:11. > :55:49.that if you look back on, you regret them.

:55:50. > :55:55.environment like this, it is so important that he has a game plan.

:55:56. > :55:58.He is obviously not that confident considering his performance this

:55:59. > :56:22.year but he has to have an idea about the way he wants to play.

:56:23. > :56:55.You talked about a game plan. Name one thing he does better than

:56:56. > :57:03.Murray? It is tough to come up with a winning game plan. Pray that he

:57:04. > :57:14.does not play well she might --? I know about that game plan.

:57:15. > :57:23.The highest ranked player he beat last year was 21. He has never

:57:24. > :57:49.beaten a top ten player. 049 against them. -- zero four nine.

:57:50. > :57:58.He is breathing a huge sigh of relief right now. His first game

:57:59. > :58:07.under his belt. At the end of March, split from his wrong time --

:58:08. > :58:11.long-time coach, with whom he had been three years with. There was

:58:12. > :58:30.obviously a need for change. And John, iSight comments you made

:58:31. > :58:35.to Goffin after the US open last year, you came up and said, I like

:58:36. > :58:39.your game but work on your legs. Have they changed much? I have not

:58:40. > :59:07.seen any change. That does not mean he is not trying.

:59:08. > :59:17.That is what he is capable of. He has quickness and he has feel. He

:59:18. > :59:35.has a lot of attributes that you need to make it big.

:59:36. > :59:42.The point before, when he did have an impact, it was Marie's slow

:59:43. > :59:47.second serve, 75 mph will stop you going to build a game plan, it is

:59:48. > :00:56.those aspects you have to take advantage of.

:00:57. > :01:03.usually where they feel the groin, and the umpire asking, feeling the

:01:04. > :01:11.pain of that, asking if he is all right.

:01:12. > :01:19.Those ladies that come out, they have that tridigs, they are not

:01:20. > :01:21.usually that far behind the baseline, wearing the court down for

:01:22. > :01:34.these fellows. -- tradition.

:01:35. > :01:47.Gorgeous finish to that game for Murray.

:01:48. > :01:52.You guys ever told, as you asked me about Goffin, his legs, Harry, the

:01:53. > :02:00.greatest Davis Cup captain who used to work with the Aussie, he had us

:02:01. > :02:06.lean against a wall. Wall sit, as if you were a chair. That guy Goffin.

:02:07. > :02:12.He is a prime candidate. So if he can last 10, 15 minutes like that,

:02:13. > :02:16.see what he is made of? Take the chairs away, rest against the

:02:17. > :02:21.umpires chair. Maybe he could get in Murray's head. That is not a

:02:22. > :02:24.badical. -- call. I hadn't thought of it but

:02:25. > :02:29.I like that. You look the change in Andy over the

:02:30. > :02:32.years in terms of his sort of physical shape and you feel as

:02:33. > :02:35.though Goffin could take a leaf out of his book, maybe it is not the

:02:36. > :02:41.tennis coach he needed to change, but the physical coach he needed to

:02:42. > :02:47.get onboard. I am happen which to be one of those people, I could go in a

:02:48. > :02:51.gym and you can't tell but I go in regular Harley and lift, and you

:02:52. > :02:57.need a micro scope to see the difference, and some guys are just,

:02:58. > :03:05.it doesn't... Michael statistic, he never had the biggest legs, he moved

:03:06. > :03:12.all right. He won here. He is also 6'4".

:03:13. > :03:32.-- Michael Stich. Is that the man you were talking

:03:33. > :04:02.about? Right on cue. Behind the Chairman.

:04:03. > :04:12.Here it goes again. That is a martyr move as you saw Goffin tried to do.

:04:13. > :04:21.Stich won Wimbledon in 91. I believe the next year Edberg beat him. That

:04:22. > :04:27.is tough. Don't lose your serve and still lose. It was the other way

:04:28. > :04:35.round, wasn't it? My mistake, I apologise. Thank you. Get your facts

:04:36. > :04:38.right! You were Jew just checking I was -- you were just checking I was

:04:39. > :05:43.awake. Heavy weight hitting.

:05:44. > :05:48.It is early days but that is Murray, that dictates Murray's play, when he

:05:49. > :05:50.looks to step up and hit that big forehand and move forward, that is

:05:51. > :06:22.when he plays his best. It the right play for Goffin to move

:06:23. > :06:23.forward but you have to do more. It was eight feet from the baseline and

:06:24. > :06:57.four from the sideline. That is the type of risk you take at

:06:58. > :07:02.5-1. A couple of brain, first set in hand. You could still see Murray

:07:03. > :07:15.saying "Don't do that, there is no reason for attempting that shot."

:07:16. > :07:46.Very shaky on that forehand is Goffin.

:07:47. > :07:58.Feel like we should make note when there is a volley winner these day,

:07:59. > :08:40.you don't see it too often. -- days.

:08:41. > :08:46.That is a big play by Goffin. Too little too late. Hopefully gives him

:08:47. > :08:49.some confidence as he moves into the second set. Hopefully for his sake

:08:50. > :09:08.he will get a better start. Hasn't put a foot wrong in this

:09:09. > :09:19.opening set, Murray. Just shy of half an hour, and here he is already

:09:20. > :09:22.with a set point. UMPIRE: Game, first set Murray. New

:09:23. > :09:25.balls please. Ideal day, ideal start to his

:09:26. > :09:49.defence. This was the start, the very start

:09:50. > :09:55.as he stepped back out on to this hallowed turf. And began stage one

:09:56. > :10:02.of a seven stage journey to potentially defend the title, that

:10:03. > :10:07.Captain putted him so greatly into the public's consciousness last

:10:08. > :10:11.year. You guys are expo innocents of the serve and valley, you said we

:10:12. > :10:17.should make a note of the volley, you said, John, he doesn't feel as

:10:18. > :10:20.if it is the game that changed, that technically the players don't feel

:10:21. > :10:24.as comfortable volleying, when the ball is below the height of the net.

:10:25. > :10:30.Do you agree? Or do you think the game has changed with racquets it

:10:31. > :10:35.has got tougher to volley. I was going to say from in every aspect

:10:36. > :10:38.the game has changed. One one of the features of that set, when you see

:10:39. > :10:41.the players trading from the baseline they look so comfortable.

:10:42. > :10:47.The ball is bouncing higher, the grass is a different type of grass.

:10:48. > :10:52.The ball doesn't go through so quickly. The surfaces are slower,

:10:53. > :10:55.they are more abrasive so there are more baseline rally, with the

:10:56. > :10:59.juniors coming up, they aren't coming to the net so much, they are

:11:00. > :11:10.taught less, they don't have the skills to come to the net, and it is

:11:11. > :11:14.is a snowballing effect. You used to say you, the gut gave you a better

:11:15. > :11:20.feel of the ball. Synthetic is not the same. You are rewarded for

:11:21. > :11:22.swinging harder so you have lighter racquets but less feel at the net.

:11:23. > :12:09.It is harder to volley. Goffin who grew up by coached by his

:12:10. > :12:14.father, and a female coach, who used to play on a WTA tour, made the

:12:15. > :12:16.quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 1979, also the Fourth Round

:12:17. > :12:36.at Wimbledon. Twice in that rally Goffin had

:12:37. > :12:39.opportunities to move forward and didn't.

:12:40. > :12:42.And he paid pretty stiff price there.

:12:43. > :12:46.That is a point he should have won. He has got to use his quickness to

:12:47. > :13:18.his advantage. So leading on from that conversation

:13:19. > :13:22.about the racquets and the technology and grass, do you think

:13:23. > :13:28.we will see a net rusher, a guy come into the net? I think it is going to

:13:29. > :13:36.change, I think they will change the rules.

:13:37. > :13:46.It's a theory, on one of the change overs. It may take a while to

:13:47. > :14:16.explain. You need to back that up! Yes.

:14:17. > :14:41.That may turn out to be a pretty big point for Goffin, to get a lead

:14:42. > :14:58.here. At least get some confidence and belief.

:14:59. > :15:08.Talk about losing... He hit a shot like he just did, then you double

:15:09. > :15:34.fault. Themph is about the same as Murrays,

:15:35. > :15:51.it has a pretty good pop on it. -- the miles per hour.

:15:52. > :16:01.A couple of fine first serves and it will be crucial to his challenge

:16:02. > :16:06.here in the second set. He learned his tennis in the

:16:07. > :16:10.backyard, did Goffin. A chalk court with his brother, they used to play

:16:11. > :16:22.five set matches against each other. He will be hoping he could get at

:16:23. > :16:32.least four today. He went to the bell upnational

:16:33. > :16:40.academy -- Belgium National Academy. Trained in his formative years at

:16:41. > :16:51.the same place Justine Henin did. That must be a pretty good academy.

:16:52. > :18:02.Yes. Was that the academy where Rodriguez

:18:03. > :18:19.was? I don't think Carlos was there as that particular time, in Mons.

:18:20. > :18:20.ORCEDWHITE I don't think Carlos was there as that particular time, in

:18:21. > :18:24.Mons. That is what you don't want also, is

:18:25. > :18:36.to get the hold, the tough hold, then you look up and it felt like a

:18:37. > :18:38.minute and now he is serving again. He is not making Murray work hard

:18:39. > :19:03.enough on his serve. I wonder how often he practises that

:19:04. > :19:09.shot. Whether he practises or not he shouldn't miss it. That is also

:19:10. > :19:12.true. Makes me think he doesn't practise

:19:13. > :19:45.it much. Much more impact on that forehand

:19:46. > :20:40.than David Goffin. A little desperation you felt in

:20:41. > :20:46.that shot from Goffin. He is better than that, he has to have better

:20:47. > :21:14.footwork, he can't allow himself to get himself in that position.

:21:15. > :21:21.Cleans up with a sweeping forehand drive, this time, Goffin.

:21:22. > :21:24.Desperately trying to cling on here as the start of the second set -- at

:21:25. > :21:53.the start of the second set. He will definitely challenge.

:21:54. > :21:57.He has to challenge. At worst it is a replay first serve, at worst. At

:21:58. > :22:16.best, break. I am feeling high and mighty right

:22:17. > :22:22.now. It is a good overall as well. Goffin would have challenged any

:22:23. > :22:29.way. Why does get a first serve? That is in the rules of the game.

:22:30. > :22:33.Because it has been called out. I understand why, because it's the

:22:34. > :22:41.rules of game. Why is it the rule of the game? You have got benefit of

:22:42. > :22:50.not losing the game. You get double benefit, don't you?

:22:51. > :23:04.As it is it is academic. Murray breaks.

:23:05. > :23:08.I think the answer... The answer is you are right. No he is not. The

:23:09. > :23:11.answer is you are replaying the point. You are not replaying the

:23:12. > :23:15.serve, so the serve was part of the point, the point ended when the ball

:23:16. > :23:21.was called out. So you are not replaying the shot, you are

:23:22. > :23:25.replaying the point. I agree but I feel as if the return is being

:23:26. > :23:29.penalised. You have hit a thousand million serves you don't need a warm

:23:30. > :23:34.up serve, the returner is on break point and he has missed his first

:23:35. > :23:38.serve, he hasn't made it. It could have within any shot. If it was a

:23:39. > :23:46.forehand of 37 shots the ball was called out. It is corrected.

:23:47. > :23:53.Excellent arguments on both sides, I must say. It is rare moment you

:23:54. > :24:00.being the diplomat. I am not sure which way to lean. I am leaning to

:24:01. > :24:05.Mark because he, it gives the server a better shot. I don't like it when

:24:06. > :24:09.I agree with you! Are we still allowing Tim, being a hero at

:24:10. > :24:14.Wimbledon, are we allowing coloured sweat bands? No. So that is gone.

:24:15. > :24:20.That was part of the tradition, I was watching the documentaries in

:24:21. > :24:25.South Africa, watching John with his redhead band, Bjorn with his blue

:24:26. > :24:30.and yellow ones. Next you will tell me it is part of the tradition for

:24:31. > :24:36.the player to walk on in blue shorts and have to go off and change them!

:24:37. > :26:24.Honest mistake! UMPIRE: Mr Murray has one challenge

:26:25. > :26:29.remaining. It has been a strong challenge and extraordinary start to

:26:30. > :26:31.the defence of his title for Britain's number one. Already a set

:26:32. > :26:49.and a break to the good. And that is good.

:26:50. > :26:55.This time from the Belgian. That second only 75mph in the middle

:26:56. > :27:13.of the box. Really there to be punished.

:27:14. > :27:25.The fastest serve he has hit is 124. It his percentage of first serves is

:27:26. > :27:36.quite high, so far, that is making life a whole lot easier for him.

:27:37. > :27:38.Almost 70% for him in this particular match. He has been

:27:39. > :28:01.averaging 60 on the season. That is much better. Murray is not

:28:02. > :28:15.as... Andy is in the driving set on Centre

:28:16. > :28:19.Court. We are leaving that match on BBC Two, if you want to continue

:28:20. > :28:24.watching you can on BBC One. So Murray's match on BBC One, here on

:28:25. > :28:28.two we will take you back to court 12, to see Johanna Konta, a match we

:28:29. > :28:32.were watching earlier, up against it here because in a moment Shuai Peng

:28:33. > :28:39.of China is coming out to serve for the match. It has been a gallant

:28:40. > :28:42.effort of Konta, can she break to keep her hopes alive? Let us joint

:28:43. > :29:12.our commentators. So Peng after over two and a quarter

:29:13. > :29:15.hour, serving now for the match. Ge hours.

:29:16. > :29:48.-- hours. Just been three breaks of serve.

:29:49. > :29:54.Konta blow, opening service game, broke back but Peng has had her nose

:29:55. > :29:57.in front pretty much from the very start of this match. It has been

:29:58. > :30:46.tough for Konta to always play catch up.

:30:47. > :30:52.what a time. It has been tough out here, Peng. She has given Yohanna

:30:53. > :31:13.Konta very few opportunities and now has three match points.

:31:14. > :31:34.One is saved. One can get very nervous at the close.

:31:35. > :31:43.That was a clean finish. She wins a tremendous baseline battle against

:31:44. > :31:52.Yohanna Konta, Britain's number three. Two hours and 15 minutes it

:31:53. > :32:02.took and she is through to the next round 6-4, the pre-6, 6-4. -- 3-6.

:32:03. > :32:08.And in the end, Yohanna Konta just fell a little short. She did. She

:32:09. > :32:16.tried her absolute best. I have seen her play much better tennis but Peng

:32:17. > :32:20.was just too strong. The ground strokes played with a lot of depth,

:32:21. > :32:28.really putting Konta under pressure. And in the end, maybe just a few too

:32:29. > :32:31.many nervous. I've never felt as if she was able to fully relax. It is a

:32:32. > :32:37.huge opportunity for all the British players, not just Yohanna Konta. It

:32:38. > :32:44.means so much, and you are so desperate to do well out there that

:32:45. > :32:46.it affects your game. Peng goes through in three very tight sets.

:32:47. > :32:54.And disappointment for Yohanna Konta.

:32:55. > :33:03.SUE BARKER: Well done to pain, but what a gallant effort from Yohanna

:33:04. > :33:11.Konta. -- Peng. Other results to bring you. Two big sharks. Samantha

:33:12. > :33:17.Stosur, the 17th seed is out, beaten by Wickmayer of Belgium, 6-3, 6-4.

:33:18. > :33:28.The former U.S. Open champion is out. Tim Kleist is -- Kim Kleist is,

:33:29. > :33:32.watching on. And another seed is out, Sloane Stephens, the talented

:33:33. > :33:37.American, seeded 18th at these championships, beaten by Maria

:33:38. > :33:43.Kirilenko of Russia. Also in straight sets. 6-2, 6-4. Two and

:33:44. > :33:48.sharks on this opening day. Kirilenko, a former top-10 player

:33:49. > :33:52.Andy quarterfinalist in Wimbledon two years ago. -- and a

:33:53. > :34:05.quarterfinalist. All happening on this opening day of

:34:06. > :34:08.Wimbledon 2014. We will be keeping an eye on many of the British

:34:09. > :34:14.players who are in action. James Ward is out there at the moment, on

:34:15. > :34:17.Court number three. And you can watch his match on the red button if

:34:18. > :34:25.you wanted we are heading over to Court number one now to see Victoria

:34:26. > :34:29.Azarenka, who has taken the first set. But down a break of serve in

:34:30. > :34:43.the second set to Moran Lucic-Baroni, 32, but as a Ranger

:34:44. > :34:47.has had trouble with a foot injury. -- Azarenka. Lindsay Davenport and

:34:48. > :35:23.Nick Mullins are our commentators. Perhaps not quite the player she was

:35:24. > :35:29.in 1999 as a young, thrusting teenager. How well has Marianna

:35:30. > :35:35.Lucic-Baroni played here on number one court? Not at all overawed.

:35:36. > :35:42.She has come out happy to be playing, happy to be back on the

:35:43. > :35:49.show Court at Wimbledon. And you can tell by watching her play, she is

:35:50. > :35:53.not overawed by the occasion. And she has been aided by sloppy play

:35:54. > :36:12.from as. -- Azarenka. Confirmation from the umpire. Just

:36:13. > :36:19.the wrong side of the line. Did not miss it by much. But no question, it

:36:20. > :36:22.was a little wide. Just a well hit shot. That shot has been travelling

:36:23. > :36:51.Azarenka, her serve. -- troubling. Movement is such a key component for

:36:52. > :36:54.Azarenka. While she is not bothered by the foot injury, she's not as

:36:55. > :37:51.crisp with her movement around the court.

:37:52. > :38:00.Getting a little choppy up to that point.

:38:01. > :38:10.A shake of the fit -- -fest from coach. Fascinating to see any big

:38:11. > :38:19.name in any sport trying to themselves to the sport. To us,

:38:20. > :38:23.Azarenka is one of those. A career punctuated by injury. This is just

:38:24. > :38:26.her fifth tournament in 2014. She has not won since the Australian

:38:27. > :38:32.open, when she picked up the foot injury that so affected her

:38:33. > :38:37.defence. Ultimately, it cost her the match against Radwanska in the

:38:38. > :38:41.quarterfinal. She had an aborted comeback on the hard courts in

:38:42. > :38:45.Indian wells, and then having missed the clay-court season, we saw her

:38:46. > :38:50.for the first time in a long time last week at Eastbourne. And we saw

:38:51. > :38:57.those nails for the first time, painted in Argentinian blue. If you

:38:58. > :39:01.are not sure why they are painted in Argentinian blue, it is because she

:39:02. > :39:05.has decided that Lionel Messi is your favourite football player of

:39:06. > :39:14.all time. She a little Argentinian flag to emphasise the point. -- she

:39:15. > :39:18.also has a little Argentinian flag. Will she have some Messi magic ear?

:39:19. > :39:33.-- here. You are exactly right. She is

:39:34. > :39:41.playing better than she did a week ago but still not up to her own

:39:42. > :39:44.standards. It has been a tough 12 months of injury. It started here

:39:45. > :39:46.last year when she fell on this court and let out a horrible shriek.

:39:47. > :39:55.She hurt her knee. She had to take some time off to

:39:56. > :39:56.come back from that injury and then the foot injury at the beginning of

:39:57. > :40:26.this year. A disconsolate look on the face of a

:40:27. > :40:28.woman who is 32 no. Still a teenager when she made all the headlines in

:40:29. > :41:09.1999, reaching the last four. Decent moving. Solid setting from

:41:10. > :41:13.both players. -- hitting. A critical moment for her coach, who you may

:41:14. > :41:32.remember as a player from the 80s and 90s, representing Yugoslavia.

:41:33. > :41:56.Azarenka, began the year as the world number two. How much is that

:41:57. > :42:14.injury impacted on her world ranking?

:42:15. > :42:26.That second serve, it has been the weaker part of her game so far

:42:27. > :42:31.today. Lucic-Baroni has an aggressive return. But Azarenka has

:42:32. > :43:37.been out of rhythm. It has cost problems this year.

:43:38. > :43:44.take control of. Azarenka, serving at 49%. But the key thing with that,

:43:45. > :43:48.she does not go for much with her first serve so she is not getting a

:43:49. > :43:58.lot of free points when she makes her first serve.

:43:59. > :44:03.From a technical point of view, we have been wondering about the

:44:04. > :44:05.direction of the ball toss, as far in front of her it is when she hits

:44:06. > :44:33.it. Every single Azarenka shot was

:44:34. > :44:41.perfect up to the point that she needed to hit the one that mattered.

:44:42. > :44:50.She was doing the right thing, moving Lucic around the court.

:44:51. > :44:55.Credit Lucic for making her play an extra ball. And Azarenka, not as

:44:56. > :45:20.comfortable and net as she would like. -- at net.

:45:21. > :45:25.It is a tough start to these championships, not just for the

:45:26. > :45:35.players. The ball boys and girls are whizzing around. Yes!

:45:36. > :45:43.It is almost like it is the late 90s here on number one Court. Mirjana

:45:44. > :45:50.Lucic-Baroni as a teenager all over again. She has hit some screech as

:45:51. > :45:59.this afternoon. She loves to go for her shots. The consistency has been

:46:00. > :46:02.up and down, but when she has made contact, when she hits the ball in

:46:03. > :46:10.her sweet spot, it is still a thing of beauty. If you are wondering what

:46:11. > :46:14.happened to her, having reached the semifinals in 1999 and becoming the

:46:15. > :46:19.lowest ranked player ever to get to the last four of the Grand Slam at

:46:20. > :46:25.that point, one or two major issues of court. Financially, the work

:46:26. > :46:28.issues, but more importantly, she had a relationship with her father

:46:29. > :46:32.that was a long way from ideal and that really messed around with her

:46:33. > :46:45.head and she needed some time away from the sport, just to regroup. Her

:46:46. > :46:50.father was always very present. A tennis parents. Unfortunately, he

:46:51. > :46:54.was also abusive to her, and it took her quite a few years to learn to be

:46:55. > :47:00.independent. That is her coach, by the way. She did not want to play

:47:01. > :47:03.the game and felt like she had been playing for him. She took a few

:47:04. > :47:08.years away from it and then wanted to come back and with the support of

:47:09. > :47:15.her husband and sister, and her coach, she has come a long way.

:47:16. > :47:19.Sometimes, winning is just being back out on the court, adding

:47:20. > :47:32.another chance to play, especially here at Wimbledon where she had her

:47:33. > :47:36.bigger success. And she was plain old Azarenka we saw last. -- Mirjana

:47:37. > :48:11.Lucic. The name now is Lucic-Baroni. A great example of a shot that needs

:48:12. > :48:39.a bit more margin, more spin. So that the ball drops in the court.

:48:40. > :48:46.Perfect crosscourt play from Lucic. Started with a great Audie serve and

:48:47. > :49:11.then an aggressive backhand. No hesitation. -- a great serve.

:49:12. > :49:15.Azarenka, forcing herself to be more aggressive there. Stepping inside

:49:16. > :49:39.the baseline, taking it early. And she has got it. Tested the

:49:40. > :49:44.mobility of Azarenka and paid the full price. Lucic did not move with

:49:45. > :49:45.the ball. She wants to be moving forward but also right. She left too

:49:46. > :49:51.much space. It is important to follow the path

:49:52. > :50:42.of your shot. Two great points have come and gone.

:50:43. > :50:47.Those of you who were watching her against Camila Giorgi at Eastbourne

:50:48. > :50:48.last week will have almost seen the flakes of rust falling off her game.

:50:49. > :51:00.But some signs again... Two break points were played by a

:51:01. > :51:08.player with not a lot of confidence. Those shots are automatic when you

:51:09. > :51:20.are playing well. Harder to make when your confidence is gone.

:51:21. > :51:33.And that is a big hole for Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

:51:34. > :53:40.The one big shot that has been holding her back is the serve. It's

:53:41. > :54:08.not providing any kind of guaranteed foundation at the moment.

:54:09. > :54:13.The first real signs of frustration from Azarenka as she smashes her

:54:14. > :54:19.racquet into the turf of all stop she has not been able to fight off

:54:20. > :54:23.the tower. -- into the turf. She has not been able to fight off the

:54:24. > :54:24.power. She is frustrated with her serve and being bullied around the

:54:25. > :54:49.court. And set point for the Croat. It was a well-placed first serve

:54:50. > :54:57.when she needed it. Azarenka is not going for much on her first serve at

:54:58. > :55:03.all. The fastest of the day, 104 mph but that has been view and far

:55:04. > :55:06.between. She is not getting three points and not been consistent. --

:55:07. > :55:22.three points. She ran an awfully long way for

:55:23. > :55:57.precious little. Hence the frustration.

:55:58. > :56:07.Azarenka make sure that if Mirjana Lucic-Baroni takes us into a third

:56:08. > :56:27.set, she will have to work through her next service game.

:56:28. > :56:36.You felt a little bit of sympathy last week in Eastbourne, being drawn

:56:37. > :56:44.against the mobile firework that is Camila Giorgi. She will really would

:56:45. > :56:49.not have hand-picked her. And Camila Giorgi was firing her shots all over

:56:50. > :56:52.the park. Do a certain extent, in Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, she has

:56:53. > :57:00.someone who is hitting her with the power game. Absolutely. And her game

:57:01. > :57:03.is rewarded by doing on -- being on this surface. It is tough to

:57:04. > :57:11.constantly defend against that power. Azarenka, being a bit rusty

:57:12. > :57:14.still, she has come a long way in a week. Her game looks more put

:57:15. > :57:21.together but still not firing on all Saunders. -- all cylinders. What a

:57:22. > :57:29.moment for Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The world lay at her feet in 1999 when

:57:30. > :57:34.she was a Wimbledon semifinalist against Lindsay Davenport. Whatever

:57:35. > :57:38.happened to her(!) The court gets you!

:57:39. > :57:46.A glint of a future here again for her. -- a glimpse of the future.

:57:47. > :57:54.It will have been a while since she felt the pressure like this, the

:57:55. > :59:47.nerves coming back. The nerves she conquered all those years ago.

:59:48. > :59:55.Seles on the way to that date on Centre Court, here are two sets

:59:56. > :00:38.point against Azarenka. -- set points.

:00:39. > :00:46.Azarenka Hsiehs one of her best returns of the match, for set point

:00:47. > :00:51.down. Azarenka's had so much success when she able to get her shots to

:00:52. > :00:56.the corners, when she is able to use the whole court. Move Lucic out of

:00:57. > :01:12.the middle of the court. She hasn't been able to do it because of the

:01:13. > :01:22.depth and pace of Lucic's shot. Depth and pace of Lucic's shot.

:01:23. > :01:29.What a point. What a point from Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Rekindling the

:01:30. > :02:16.Wimbledon memories of 99. Azarenka, when she is able to take

:02:17. > :02:22.control with her return, she is able to place it near the corner, it is

:02:23. > :02:27.very touch for Lucic to get back into the rally.

:02:28. > :03:21.Lucic needs a couple of big first serves here.

:03:22. > :03:28.. UMPIRE: The ball was called in.

:03:29. > :03:34.Well, well, well. I think she realised she might have stopped

:03:35. > :03:41.prematurely. She doesn't look sure about this.

:03:42. > :03:47.And she was right to. Oh. UMPIRE: Game Azarenka. She had three

:03:48. > :03:55.points in that match to take us into a third set. And she has got to get

:03:56. > :04:00.herself back off the floor now. So many times you hope as a player

:04:01. > :04:04.it is going Lens, you want it to go long, it is tough when you have a

:04:05. > :04:13.play on the ball and she made that back in the court, but... Stop

:04:14. > :04:42.played to check the mark. So, 5-5. Azarenka having won the first set.

:04:43. > :04:52.It is going to be tough for Lucic to recover, she had set point on

:04:53. > :04:58.Azarenka's sever, then had three on her own serve. -- serve. She is not

:04:59. > :05:55.able to come through with the second set.

:05:56. > :06:03.As much as you might feel the frustration of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni

:06:04. > :06:07.how Will did Victoria Azarenka play those -- how well did Victoria

:06:08. > :06:12.Azarenka play those? How well did she play those big, big points as

:06:13. > :06:17.those games reach their crescendo She has been such a great returner,

:06:18. > :06:20.it hasn't been on display for the whole match, but it was on display

:06:21. > :06:26.in that last return game, when she was down the set points. Got more

:06:27. > :06:30.aggressive. Took her returns earlier and tried to get Lucic moving, from

:06:31. > :06:36.the get go. For the first time in the set, she

:06:37. > :06:41.is ahead. Broken in her very opening service

:06:42. > :06:47.game, having won the first set. I am sure she wasn't allowed her

:06:48. > :06:54.mind to drift back to 99, rather like we were poetically, but she is,

:06:55. > :07:00.she wasn't sure about what top line tennis at this level means, she has

:07:01. > :07:04.just had a fairly rough reintroduction for it. That was

:07:05. > :07:08.brutal for her. She needs to come out, and play one of her best

:07:09. > :07:14.service games. Try and put the last ten or 12 points behind her.

:07:15. > :07:17.Try to get this second set into a tie-break. He has to be more

:07:18. > :07:45.consistent with that first serve. She is making 50%.

:07:46. > :07:50.She has faced some challenges in her life over the last decade or so,

:07:51. > :08:45.here is another little one here, to stay in this match.

:08:46. > :08:54.Starting to be more confident with her returns.

:08:55. > :09:02.Getting back on the court for matches, knowing when to go for

:09:03. > :09:50.more, when to make sure you are consistent with them.

:09:51. > :09:58.Than gives Victoria Azarenka a couple of points, to chalk up her

:09:59. > :10:03.first win since the Australian Open in January.

:10:04. > :11:23.Two match points. What is going on here? The umpire

:11:24. > :11:38.wants to have a word with one of the ballgirls. Oh, she is not well.

:11:39. > :11:43.And she's taken off court by... By an umpire who is very well aware

:11:44. > :11:50.that she wasn't in the best of states.

:11:51. > :11:54.Well done to him, the eagle eyes. However, at a critical point in this

:11:55. > :12:08.match, Lucic, deuce. And third match point for the eighth

:12:09. > :12:30.seed from Belarus. They are brave shots from Lucic and

:12:31. > :12:36.a shake of the head understandably from Azarenka. Lucic is able to

:12:37. > :12:59.focus, and hitting some great shots to still be round here.

:13:00. > :13:11.No. She toyed with the top of the net once too often.

:13:12. > :13:16.Once again it is Azarenka who stands on the brink of her most important

:13:17. > :14:08.point in a few months. It starts off with a return from

:14:09. > :14:14.Azarenka... And as soon as she gets Lucic move, it is very advantageous

:14:15. > :14:43.position for Azarenka. Another match point.

:14:44. > :14:51.Oh, she is not yet the Azarenka of old, but that is a big win.

:14:52. > :14:57.Her first since January, since the Australian Open.

:14:58. > :15:03.She is on her way at this year's Wimbledon.

:15:04. > :15:07.For Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, the reheating of some old Wimbledon

:15:08. > :15:11.dream, but that is as far as it goes for her this year. We will see much,

:15:12. > :15:17.much more of Victoria Azarenka. There is happiness, a bit of reef

:15:18. > :15:21.from Azarenka, as you said, to get that first win, and just about five

:15:22. > :15:26.month, it has been a tough road for Azarenka, but she will be happy to

:15:27. > :15:30.get that first win under her belt, here, at Wimbledon. Now look to try

:15:31. > :15:34.and move forward. She knows she needs to improve her game, we will

:15:35. > :15:45.see if she can relax a bit and get into the flow of the tournament.

:15:46. > :15:49.Mirjana Lucic-Baroni as well, 32 now, when tennis is up for her as a

:15:50. > :15:55.game, she will have some story to tell, not all of it happy news, but

:15:56. > :16:03.how well has she fought back to be battling again at this level on this

:16:04. > :16:09.kind of stage. Her best memory, tennis wise have come from this

:16:10. > :16:14.tournament. Making the semi-finals in 99 and a little way, the way she

:16:15. > :16:18.conducted herself out there this afternoon, ought to be on that list

:16:19. > :16:25.somewhere as well, because she really pushed Azarenka, the eighth

:16:26. > :16:30.seed, twice a semifinalist in 2011, 2012. Very very hard. Fascinating to

:16:31. > :16:37.see what she can do this fortnight. She is in the same half of the draw

:16:38. > :16:46.as the second seed, and Agnieszka Radwanska. A potential third round

:16:47. > :16:50.match against Mugunuza Blanco. That will be fan nitting. That a good

:16:51. > :16:55.selfie to have to show your school mates. That is showing off.

:16:56. > :17:04.Any way, Victoria Azarenka -- fascinating. Safely into the next

:17:05. > :17:13.round, and she may well upset one or two on the way, as she is the eighth

:17:14. > :17:18.seed. It would be interesting, as time

:17:19. > :17:23.progresses to see how she becomes more and more used to the situation,

:17:24. > :17:27.to the grass, being back into the big time. It will be fun watching

:17:28. > :17:35.her. We will hear from her now, she is about to have a chat with Rishi.

:17:36. > :17:39.Congratulations, how good does it feel to get that win under your

:17:40. > :17:43.belt? It is just, I am so happy to get the win, you know, it has been a

:17:44. > :17:49.while since I had that feeling, it was important to stay in, I thought

:17:50. > :17:54.the second set was trickier, my game was a bit up and down. There were

:17:55. > :17:57.good moments and she came out with strong shots. I am happy stayed in

:17:58. > :18:02.and fought for every point. I think that is the way to kind of build up,

:18:03. > :18:05.build up your game, and try to improve from every match. When you

:18:06. > :18:09.have been on the sidelines as long adds you have this season, how hard

:18:10. > :18:12.is it to stay patient in the process and not want things to happen too

:18:13. > :18:16.quickly? You know, I just stay in the moment, I don't think about what

:18:17. > :18:20.is going to happen, I just try to take the best out of each moment,

:18:21. > :18:25.try to play every point no matter what the score is, and I think that

:18:26. > :18:29.is the best way for me to improve, and to get into that rhythm of

:18:30. > :18:33.playing, so I am happy I can maintain my focus, and the game is

:18:34. > :18:36.going to come. Well done, we have enjoyed looking

:18:37. > :18:40.at your nails throughout the tournament. You will be supporting

:18:41. > :18:44.Argentina. Do you know when they are playing next? They won on Saturday

:18:45. > :18:48.so Yong I don't know the next time they are going to win. Next time

:18:49. > :18:53.they are going to win. Perfect. Thank you so much.

:18:54. > :18:58.How lovely it is to see Victoria Azarenka smiling again. This was a

:18:59. > :19:02.really tricky opening match for her, her lack of match practise had

:19:03. > :19:06.everybody talking. Wondered whether another #150ed might fall but she

:19:07. > :19:10.dug deep in that second set and come through, so the two-time Wimbledon

:19:11. > :19:23.semifinalist is safely through. So that was Azarenka out of Court

:19:24. > :19:29.One, but I have talked about seeds going out. A big shock on Court

:19:30. > :19:33.Eight with Matosevic who has put out Fernando Verdasco, he was the player

:19:34. > :19:39.who led Andy Murray by two sets to love. But Matosevic has done so well

:19:40. > :19:43.in the grass court season. In Nottingham he reached the final and

:19:44. > :19:53.he beat Tsonga at Queen's Club. He is an outspoken Aussie, he is

:19:54. > :19:57.through. Putting out the 18th seed. Makarova of Russia. A

:19:58. > :20:02.quarterfinalist has come through against Krumm of Japan. Lovely to

:20:03. > :20:10.see Krumm back here. Former semifinalist, now 43 years of age.

:20:11. > :20:15.Just missing out in the third. Disappointing for Johanna Konta but

:20:16. > :20:19.she put up an immense battle on court 12 but came up short against

:20:20. > :20:23.Shuai Peng of China, losing 6-4 in the third and final set. She has a

:20:24. > :20:31.lot to be proud of in this grass court season. Johanna Konta of Great

:20:32. > :20:38.Britain out. And Thomas Berdych, the sixth seed

:20:39. > :20:44.and former finalist, he lost the opened set to Victor Hanescu but

:20:45. > :20:51.then came flu comfortably. He could meet Tomic in the next round.

:20:52. > :20:58.-- through comfortably. And just a few moments ago, out on

:20:59. > :21:06.Court Three James Ward is out, beaten very comfortably by Mikhail

:21:07. > :21:12.Youzhny of Russia, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. So James Ward, who was hoping for a run

:21:13. > :21:20.goes out on the opening round on the opening day of the tournament. Andy

:21:21. > :21:23.Murray is marching on, two sets to love against David Goffin of

:21:24. > :21:27.Belgium. Three games all in the third set. That match is live over

:21:28. > :21:33.on BBC One. In a moment, here on BBC Two, we

:21:34. > :22:07.will be heading back to Court Number One, to see the king of Queens.

:22:08. > :22:13.And he is many people's pick to go well in this tournament. Grigor

:22:14. > :22:16.Dimitrov will be on court against Ryan Harrison of the United States

:22:17. > :22:21.who came through the qualifying. We will be there in a moment, but let

:22:22. > :22:26.us take you out to court 18, to see Dan cox of Great Britain, he is up

:22:27. > :22:32.against Jeremy Chardy of France, who is ranked 42 in the world. Dan was

:22:33. > :22:37.practising with Andy Murray and got a few tips on how to play him. He

:22:38. > :22:39.has battled hard in the second set. It is six games all. We can join it

:22:40. > :22:54.at the start of the tie-break. That was tight. Very nervy looking

:22:55. > :24:19.ball toss and service action. Pity, he set the point up so well,

:24:20. > :24:25.there, Dan Cox. His nevers have got the better of

:24:26. > :24:30.him -- nevers have got the better nevers have got the better of him.

:24:31. > :25:02.You sense he must win this point on serve.

:25:03. > :25:10.Changed his service direction there, into the bo did which is a good --

:25:11. > :25:14.body, which is a good tactical change. He caught his opponent by

:25:15. > :25:40.surprise. Chardy did very well. He got caught

:25:41. > :25:43.one a shot but was still able to produce this beautiful winner. Look

:25:44. > :25:46.that the His weight was going backwards, as he was moving back, he

:25:47. > :25:53.was able to create enough space and control of the racquet to play a

:25:54. > :26:01.forcing forehand. Remarkable shot. That is talent. Chardy just

:26:02. > :26:04.discussing something with the umpire. Something to do with the

:26:05. > :26:50.balls I think. He gave Chardy too many chances. He

:26:51. > :26:54.had half a chance to win the. . He gets into the net and here that

:26:55. > :26:58.backhand just didn't have enough placement, it was too short, gave

:26:59. > :27:17.Chardy the chance to move forward, and make the passing shot.

:27:18. > :27:19.S into the net and here that backhand just didn't have enough

:27:20. > :27:21.placement, it was too short, gave Chardy the chance to move forward,

:27:22. > :27:22.and make the passing shot. Overruled to give set point to

:27:23. > :27:25.Chardy. That hasn't gone down well. Overruled to give set point to

:27:26. > :27:29.Chardy. That It looked close, that is a big call, it is not an easy

:27:30. > :27:36.angle for the umpire from her position to see this. Let us see if,

:27:37. > :27:41.in slo-mo time here. Not easy to tell on that, but Cox

:27:42. > :27:47.thought it was out. The lines person thought it was out and some of the

:27:48. > :28:22.crowd, judging but the reaction also sympathised with the call.

:28:23. > :28:36.Chardy leads by two sets to love. This match continues on line, so two

:28:37. > :28:41.sets to love to Jeremy Chardy, we will keep you up-to-date with Dan's

:28:42. > :28:46.progress on court 18. But we said we were heading to Court One, to see

:28:47. > :28:50.this man Grigor Dimitrov, who won at Queen's Club and caused quite a

:28:51. > :28:53.stir. Had his girlfriend Maria Sharapova watching in the final. And

:28:54. > :28:58.he is really one of the most marketable players on the tour. He

:28:59. > :29:06.has been tipped for the top for so long, he was known as Baby Fed. He

:29:07. > :29:11.is proving that on the biggest stages of all. We talk about the

:29:12. > :29:15.players at the top and we talk about the big three, Novak Djokovic, he

:29:16. > :29:19.will be on court later, we have Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on

:29:20. > :29:23.court tomorrow, they have dominated the Grand Slams but we caught up

:29:24. > :29:28.with them over the weekend. I look forward to every Wimbledon, I

:29:29. > :29:31.play in my life, because it's a very special tournament. It is the most

:29:32. > :29:35.important tournament. The most traditional one. It carries the most

:29:36. > :29:41.value, and tournament I wanted to win, so the highlight of my career

:29:42. > :29:46.and the best memories have is 2011, the victory here, at the Wimbledon

:29:47. > :29:52.Centre Court. Wimbledon will be the toughest for

:29:53. > :29:57.me to play well with my style of game, it is the second Grand Slam I

:29:58. > :30:05.have had most success, playing five finals and winning two, so, this is

:30:06. > :30:07.great. It's a tournament I love so much, I love being here. I am

:30:08. > :30:17.excited to be back, and I am looking forward to playing better. It is

:30:18. > :30:19.nice having achieved so much at Wimbledon, it has always been my

:30:20. > :30:20.dream to play here, Wimbledon, it has always been my

:30:21. > :30:22.dream to let alone winning. Wimbledon, it has always been my

:30:23. > :30:25.dream to let alone I remember watching Boris Becker and Stefan

:30:26. > :30:32.Edberg playing in these finals and dreaming that one day I could be

:30:33. > :30:36.that guy as well. This year I feel better than in previous years. The

:30:37. > :30:40.knee is feeling better in every practice, I can move myself much

:30:41. > :30:45.better, that is very important for me, it is everything to have the

:30:46. > :30:49.chance to play well here again. It is Wimbledon, it is grass,

:30:50. > :30:53.everything is so difficult, very dangerous at the beginning, every

:30:54. > :30:56.round is so difficult for everyone especially at the beginning of the

:30:57. > :31:02.tournament. But I think I am doing the right things to be ready for

:31:03. > :31:07.that. What has it been like working with Stefan Edberg? What advice can

:31:08. > :31:12.he give you? It is the little things. He does not need to teach me

:31:13. > :31:17.how to hit a forehand or a backhand. But he speaks from his experience,

:31:18. > :31:21.inspires me and maybe gives me that one piece of advice at the right

:31:22. > :31:28.moment to give me peace of mind or really motivate me in a particular

:31:29. > :31:35.moment. Having Boris Becker on board definitely will help. We are working

:31:36. > :31:41.on a lot of things in my game, but mostly mentally to get myself in the

:31:42. > :31:47.right mindset, and to have a very positive approach to this you's

:31:48. > :31:50.events. He knows exactly how I feel and what I experience and the

:31:51. > :31:56.challenges I am facing as a tough player, at big events, and you

:31:57. > :31:58.mention he has won three times here so it feels like home soil and

:31:59. > :32:05.hopefully we can have a great two weeks. SUE BARKER: he will have a

:32:06. > :32:09.great two weeks if he wins, he is the bookies's favourite, Djokovic,

:32:10. > :32:14.but Rafael Nadal has won it twice and Roger Federer has won it seven

:32:15. > :32:17.times. All the fans enjoying the sunshine on the opening day and

:32:18. > :32:21.enjoying the tennis on Centre Court, if they British fans they are

:32:22. > :32:25.certainly enjoying what is happening because the defending champion, Andy

:32:26. > :32:30.Murray, got a standing ovation as he walked on court today, seeded

:32:31. > :32:36.number, he is leading two sets to love, 5-4, it is on serve, Andy is

:32:37. > :32:43.serving to stay in the third set. That match is live on BBC1. But we

:32:44. > :32:48.are heading to Court Number One now, to see Grigor Dimitrov against Ryan

:32:49. > :32:53.Harrison. That has just got underway. Dimitrov has held his

:32:54. > :33:11.opening service game. We can join our commentators, Peter Fleming and

:33:12. > :33:15.Andrew Castle. ANDREW CASTLE: and have very much a star the game

:33:16. > :33:30.against Harrison, a qualifier from the United States. PETER FLEMING:

:33:31. > :33:33.that is a feature of the Harrison game, she is a great server, and

:33:34. > :33:38.will need to continue that trend throughout the match. And easy in

:33:39. > :33:44.old folk Dimitrov in the opening game as they both find their feet.

:33:45. > :33:49.Both have had plenty of matches at Mike that is an easy opener for

:33:50. > :33:55.Dimitrov in the opening game. Both have had plenty of matches on grass.

:33:56. > :34:00.That is nice. Just a little illustration of what he has. Look

:34:01. > :34:07.for a stutter step and then just holding his racket back. Not a great

:34:08. > :34:23.deal but just a little adjustment,. He puts a lot of returns of serve

:34:24. > :34:27.back into play. Ryan Borris in from Florida, working with the USGA

:34:28. > :34:31.Junior development programme was well inside the top 50 at one time

:34:32. > :34:34.and looked like a star in the making. Fell back down the rankings

:34:35. > :35:12.again. Strong opening game for the

:35:13. > :35:17.qualifier, Harrison. Ranked 140th in the world. That he has won matches

:35:18. > :35:22.here before, on two occasions he has won his first round match, so no

:35:23. > :35:26.stranger, even though he came through qualifying, to the main

:35:27. > :35:29.draw. And he will relish this challenge. He has nothing to lose

:35:30. > :35:46.against Dimitrov, who is heavily favoured.

:35:47. > :35:54.A message forehand return. Should Harrison start winning by two sets

:35:55. > :35:59.to one, try telling him he has nothing to lose! That is different,

:36:00. > :36:21.but coming in, he will be thinking, I can go for this, right? Oh, yeah!

:36:22. > :36:28.And it is rare that we will see Dimitrov missing in the forecourt.

:36:29. > :37:26.He has become very effective at closing the net down.

:37:27. > :37:36.Just five minutes played, no breaks of serve. Dimitrov was in London

:37:37. > :37:41.last week just getting ready after winning at Queen's Club, saving a

:37:42. > :37:45.much wider against Lopez in that final, if you were with us that was

:37:46. > :37:51.a fantastic final played by two stylish players. Lopez beat Richard

:37:52. > :37:55.Gasquet in the final at Eastbourne, I thought it was a tremendous

:37:56. > :37:59.response to the disappointment at having one match point and still

:38:00. > :38:03.losing in the final of the tournament. Absolutely, not to

:38:04. > :38:09.mention how exhausted he must have been mentally, if not physically. It

:38:10. > :38:15.is tough to continue playing daily in and day out for a period of

:38:16. > :38:19.weeks, that might stay in and day out. That is why only a very few

:38:20. > :38:23.players win Grand Slams because you must keep it going for two weeks

:38:24. > :38:27.running. Dimitrov came here having lost in the first round of the

:38:28. > :38:31.French Open, having made the quarterfinal of the Australian Open,

:38:32. > :38:36.a breakthrough to a new level there, at Grand Slam level. He was

:38:37. > :38:42.disappointed, to lose to either convict on a clay court was a real

:38:43. > :38:49.surprise in the locker room. -- to lose to Ivo Karlovic. Ivo Karlovic

:38:50. > :38:54.could be playing on quicksand, and if serving well, he's unplayable! A

:38:55. > :38:57.first-round match on number one Court. Potentially a very

:38:58. > :39:40.interesting one indeed. Ryan Harrison to serve. That is big

:39:41. > :39:54.serving. As Peter would say, this is the signature part of his game. The

:39:55. > :39:59.rest of his game is a work in progress. I think he hasn't yet

:40:00. > :40:01.moved out -- worked out how he wants to play, what sort of a player he

:40:02. > :40:56.would like to be. That was a powerful second serve

:40:57. > :41:01.attempt, 170 mph. Temp max three - Jan-Michael Gambill, working with

:41:02. > :41:16.the USTA, and working with Harrison, a good man to have on your side. He

:41:17. > :41:19.was a top player. He's taking on an entirely different persona as a

:41:20. > :41:20.coach than as a player, he was something of a hothead, now he is

:41:21. > :42:18.very considered. Roger Rashid from Adelaide,

:42:19. > :42:20.Australia. He has worked with some good players and this might be the

:42:21. > :42:37.best of the bunch. That is a tall statement! He coached

:42:38. > :42:42.Leyton Hewitt, remember? Maybe one day Dimitrov will eclipse what

:42:43. > :42:45.Leyton Hewitt achieved, but not yet. Although he was not with him when

:42:46. > :42:50.Leyton Hewitt won Wimbledon and the US Open, but I take your point. He's

:42:51. > :42:57.a very physical coach. A very physical man. Quite a macho approach

:42:58. > :43:03.to the coaching role, this kit will do what I want him to do! And all

:43:04. > :43:07.that stuff. And you'd need a different coach out of stages of

:43:08. > :43:14.your career. A fascinating contrast with what Andy Murray has employed

:43:15. > :43:21.in a muddy morass mole. - in Ely Maurice mole. He doesn't want to be

:43:22. > :43:25.bullied to do the physical work. He already does that work. Breast

:43:26. > :43:30.Dimitrov needs that disciplined face. Face and may have a good

:43:31. > :43:34.relationship, it is obviously paying dividends, he has won four titles

:43:35. > :43:46.since he hooked up with Roger Rashid. The nearest just filtering

:43:47. > :43:48.through, -- the nearest just filtering through that Andy Murray

:43:49. > :43:55.has wrapped up victory on Centre Court. -- the news is just filtering

:43:56. > :44:36.through. Nice to see Harrison as aggressive

:44:37. > :44:40.as he has been thus far in this match. I think he lost his way a

:44:41. > :44:44.little bit over the last year or two by being quite tentative from the

:44:45. > :44:48.back of the court. He's a great athlete, DJs is done a lot of balls,

:44:49. > :45:00.that he allowed on self to be bullied a little. -- he chases down

:45:01. > :45:03.a lot of balls. That does not appear to be the case today but that last

:45:04. > :45:06.rally was instructive because to be the case today but that last

:45:07. > :45:12.rally was instructive Dimitrov just glides over the top of this service.

:45:13. > :45:19.He is as good a move on this surface as I think there is, in the game.

:45:20. > :45:40.Harrison is still coming to grips with it. I know that Harrison won

:45:41. > :45:44.this point with this forehand, there is something special about the way

:45:45. > :45:55.that Dimitrov plays, and it can be thrilling. Harrison has to deal with

:45:56. > :46:00.this. Dimitrov is using a racket with just 90 square inches of string

:46:01. > :46:08.in it. He might look at it this summer, it might go up to 93, 95. It

:46:09. > :46:15.is the old Pete Sampras model with the paint job! Really? That looks

:46:16. > :46:32.bigger than 90. It looks like 93 bedded is 90. -- it looks like 93,

:46:33. > :46:36.that it is 90. Grigor Dimitrov says that everything is OK if he is

:46:37. > :46:40.hitting the ball well and seeing it well but he doesn't like the

:46:41. > :46:44.playability quite as much if it is a day where it is not coming out of

:46:45. > :47:08.the centre but he loves and adores the racket.

:47:09. > :47:14.Generally speaking when it comes to racket it is all personal preference

:47:15. > :47:32.but you have got to be good to use this one.

:47:33. > :47:39.racket it is all personal preference but you have got to Would use a Pete

:47:40. > :47:50.Sampras was good? LAUGHTER Yes! Just checking! -- would you say

:47:51. > :48:40.that Pete Sampras was good? Dimitrov serve. He has come out with

:48:41. > :48:46.his eye in bed he will be aware of the threat from Harrison who brings

:48:47. > :49:04.a lot of tools to the court himself. -- that he will be aware. The first

:49:05. > :49:08.ace. It did not seem like that racket had too much use but it looks

:49:09. > :49:13.like it will get changed. I don't know when that came in, if you goes

:49:14. > :49:19.back, they decided that was the right thing to do, it seemed like a

:49:20. > :49:24.luxury in the old days. Ivan Lendl was the first to do it, the theory

:49:25. > :49:29.was that you bring in new balls which are lighter, so if you bring

:49:30. > :49:34.in a new racket at the same time, often the strings will listen up as

:49:35. > :49:40.you play with them. The lighter the balls, the tighter the strings. It

:49:41. > :49:46.certainly makes sense in theory. I used to go into matches with strings

:49:47. > :49:52.fraying, I hope it doesn't break in this match! Those days are over!

:49:53. > :50:03.Let's look at the details. 313 grams. Plus strings. He has taken

:50:04. > :50:12.it. We will get back in there. I guess that was 25 kilos. Can you

:50:13. > :50:24.offer a poundage on that? 2.2. So, 55. It is quite tight for a small

:50:25. > :51:34.headed racket. Both have served superbly, Harrison

:51:35. > :52:08.over 70% of first serves in, and Dimitrov as well.

:52:09. > :52:17.This is an impressive start for Harrison, he is no stranger to grand

:52:18. > :52:21.slam play. This is his 16th grand slam appearance. He has been around

:52:22. > :52:26.a bit, his ranking has gone at and down that he is very much matching

:52:27. > :52:34.Dimitrov shot for shot, and a couple of decent blows away from nicking a

:52:35. > :52:40.break of serve maybe. -- his ranking has gone down a bit. But he is very

:52:41. > :52:50.much matching Dimitrov shot for shot. He has been overkill for a

:52:51. > :52:52.while, the American, losing in the second round of the Nottingham

:52:53. > :52:59.Challenger, did not qualify at Queen's Club. Which his opponent

:53:00. > :53:17.one. But then he qualified for Wimbledon, and that is a big deal.

:53:18. > :53:24.If for no other reason than the first-round prize-money at the very

:53:25. > :53:48.least! ?27,000 if you lose in the first round here. You can't just

:53:49. > :54:21.walk in and enter though! Missed one of these on the backhand earlier,

:54:22. > :54:30.just caught the top of the net here. Going for extra on that second

:54:31. > :54:42.serve, 121 mph. A typical 40-0.4. - a typical 40-0 point.

:54:43. > :54:49.We have been talking about the relationship with his courage, Roger

:54:50. > :54:52.Rashid, since they got together, his victory over David Ferrer in

:54:53. > :54:57.Stockholm, indoors, then the quarterfinal at the Australian Open,

:54:58. > :55:01.he lost to Rafael Nadal, but there were a couple of tie-break sets

:55:02. > :55:08.them, an interesting much, then he won in Acapulco, beating Ernests

:55:09. > :55:12.Gulbis, Murray and Anderson, all in three sets. A difficult thing to

:55:13. > :55:18.achieve. He played Davis Cup for Bulgaria. They beat Greece. And then

:55:19. > :55:44.he won Bucharest on clay and didn't drop a set before winning at Queen's

:55:45. > :55:47.Club. Fascinating first-round matchup, so many of them in these

:55:48. > :55:53.opening days at a grand slam championship. Dimitrov highly

:55:54. > :55:58.touted, one of six or seven players that you could see winning best

:55:59. > :56:02.championship. It's all a matter of opinion. Ryan Harrison, his American

:56:03. > :56:03.opponent, a hugely exciting prospect, but he has been for a

:56:04. > :56:47.while! Serve has been dominant in this

:56:48. > :56:51.match so far. It has not been lacking interest because of it. Was

:56:52. > :56:59.that return a sign that Dimitrov is picking up the Harrison serve,

:57:00. > :57:03.reading and better? Perhaps. -- reading it better. I think he is

:57:04. > :57:08.going to have to pick it up a little better and also Harrison is going to

:57:09. > :57:11.have to dip. If he continues to make this high percentage of first serves

:57:12. > :57:33.there isn't much that Dimitrov can do. That was an impressive

:57:34. > :57:38.serve-volley combination! Not what we will see from Harrison Time after

:57:39. > :57:42.time, that if he could become adept at that, it would be a nice

:57:43. > :58:08.addition. Well held from Harrison. He has not

:58:09. > :58:16.come out here with any sense of fear or trepidation, he has brought the

:58:17. > :58:19.game but got through the first three to friends of qualifying, not always

:58:20. > :58:22.easy even if you are a man of experience, which he is coming he is

:58:23. > :58:41.a better player than his ranking of 140.

:58:42. > :58:55.A terrific point! Harrison showing the athletic ability he undoubtedly

:58:56. > :59:02.has. This was a nice shot. He knew that the drop volley was on the

:59:03. > :59:17.cards. Just a little 2-mac. -- just a little too much. This is a tough

:59:18. > :59:22.first round match for Dimitrov. We've seen in winning a lot lately,

:59:23. > :59:26.the victory at Queen's Club, saving a match point and defeating

:59:27. > :59:28.Feliciano Lopez, but this is getting to the many end of the set, a bit

:59:29. > :00:38.tense. -- to the money end. leaving Court Number One. But it is

:00:39. > :00:44.live on BBC One. Let's bring you up-to-date with what has been

:00:45. > :00:52.happening elsewhere. On Centre Court in defence of his title, 61-64-75.

:00:53. > :01:14.Andy Murray defeated David Goffin of Belgium.

:01:15. > :01:25.Congratulations. Yes, it was a high standard of match. I thought the

:01:26. > :01:33.level was very high. It was a great rally. Yes, glad to finish it

:01:34. > :01:47.through. To win in three, confidence wise, fantastic. In terms of the way

:01:48. > :02:00.I struck the ball today, it was a good start. I was nervous this

:02:01. > :02:05.morning, I was nervous yesterday, I kept walking to the court. It brings

:02:06. > :02:09.back a lot of good memories. It is good to walk out to a full crowd for

:02:10. > :02:15.the first match. I got a round of applause. Once you sit down, it is

:02:16. > :02:19.time to get ready for this year and try to play my best.

:02:20. > :02:27.It brought back memories, which ones? And in particular? Obviously,

:02:28. > :02:33.last year was the best time I have had that I have had a lot of tough

:02:34. > :02:37.moments on that course as well. I'm thinking about when I'm on my way to

:02:38. > :02:47.the court. There are many close matches here. Obviously, winning

:02:48. > :03:13.last year is the best memory. Congratulations.

:03:14. > :03:33.For a. -- not such good news for Johanna Konta of Great Britain. A

:03:34. > :03:45.lot to be proud of? Just couldn't win in the final set. James Ward was

:03:46. > :03:51.not uncorked along today and in Fort Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, seeded

:03:52. > :04:01.17. In the Championship, six - two, 6-2, 6-1. The Russian came through,

:04:02. > :04:07.for James Ward. Over on Centre Court, after Andy Murray, Li Na,

:04:08. > :04:20.number two seed against a qualifier from Poland, Paula cannier, that

:04:21. > :04:32.much is live on the red button. We will keep you up-to-date on Li Na's

:04:33. > :04:36.progress over on Centre Court he needs to win this one to keep his

:04:37. > :04:44.hopes alive. That is on a team. You can follow it online. We are heading

:04:45. > :04:51.to Court Number Two to see Venus Williams, five times champion, up

:04:52. > :04:57.against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain. It is four games all. And

:04:58. > :05:23.commentators of Virginia Wade and Alison Mitchell.

:05:24. > :05:30.and the first of the match. I came to the match at just the right

:05:31. > :05:37.moment. Great striking of the ball by both players. That you have the

:05:38. > :05:52.feeling that Venus is just going to find a way to edge through.

:05:53. > :06:00.Double break and that gives Williams... She does want to have a

:06:01. > :06:14.look, Torro-Flor. The first double fault since the

:06:15. > :06:20.first game of the match. She has a very good serve. Maybe she goes

:06:21. > :06:25.through a little bit too much power on her first serve and then ends up

:06:26. > :06:35.at the mercy of the power of Venus' racket. Very good form. Venus will

:06:36. > :06:41.come out to serve for the first set. Such a gulf in experience between

:06:42. > :06:46.the two players, Venus five times Wimbledon champion, her opponent

:06:47. > :06:53.just 22 years old, her second Wimbledon. 2013 was the breakthrough

:06:54. > :06:57.year for her, the first time she appeared in the main draw of all

:06:58. > :07:08.before microgram slams. So a player starting to make her way on the

:07:09. > :07:16.senior circuit. She is number four of the Spanish players. They do very

:07:17. > :07:20.well, the Spanish girls. They are coming up with some tour players,

:07:21. > :07:33.big, powerful games. So it is not really what we would have considered

:07:34. > :07:42.the original sort of Spanish game. Some of them won by attrition rather

:07:43. > :07:45.than aggression. The person in charge of the Spanish Fed Cup team

:07:46. > :07:57.has been very responsible for the success.

:07:58. > :08:05.Just seen a couple of wild shots from Torro-Flor is. -- from

:08:06. > :08:31.Torro-Flor. Suddenly a bit more consistent

:08:32. > :08:53.tennis from Venus. And more errors coming from Torro-Flor.

:08:54. > :09:27.What a booming ace. She closed it down in style. The first time we

:09:28. > :09:33.have seen her close down a service game with an ace in this set, and

:09:34. > :09:38.she does win this first set 6-4. Perhaps, Virginia, starting at a

:09:39. > :09:40.little cagily between these two? It went tight right until a decisive

:09:41. > :09:55.break at the end from Venus. Venus has been the karma of the two

:09:56. > :09:59.players. Maybe because Venus definitely started hitting the ball

:10:00. > :10:05.harder and showing her aggression a few games ago, and it just seems

:10:06. > :10:09.that Torro-Flor has fallen into the trap of trying to pace it and just

:10:10. > :10:22.staying on the points. Venus is always going to have a lot

:10:23. > :10:26.of power so you have to try to get her to make an error. Keep the ball

:10:27. > :10:37.in court. An excellent first serve from Torro-Flor. Her returns were

:10:38. > :10:45.OK. Venus is winning but Chile every point when to get her first serve

:10:46. > :10:53.in. -- when she gets her first serve in, she is virtually winning every

:10:54. > :10:58.point. No particular celebration when she won the set. Calm and

:10:59. > :11:06.collected out there. Preparing for a set number two. Venus started of the

:11:07. > :11:13.year very well. She got to the final in Auckland and them won in Dubai.

:11:14. > :11:15.She had some average results but it has been not a bad year, but

:11:16. > :11:41.disappointing in the French. Torro-Flor has won her first tour

:11:42. > :12:28.title this year, on clay, her favourite surface. In Marrakesh.

:12:29. > :12:32.Column are the days when the Williams sisters hit the ball that

:12:33. > :12:39.much harder than all the other players. -- gone of the days. It is

:12:40. > :12:50.14 years since Venus won her first Wimbledon.

:12:51. > :12:58.The Williams sisters are not winning these days just by brute force. He

:12:59. > :13:06.still need to draw upon your guile and your angles, changes of pace,

:13:07. > :13:34.Spain, consistency, too. -- your spin.

:13:35. > :13:41.That was definitely an unforced error from Torro-Flor. She was not

:13:42. > :13:45.pushed out of position. She was not wrong-footed. Her concentration went

:13:46. > :14:25.in the middle of the rally. Goodbye. Emphatic from Williams at

:14:26. > :14:46.the net. Perfect placement. And execution.

:14:47. > :15:01.She just lost her confidence on that first serve.

:15:02. > :15:36.Still had the confidence to hit nice and deep down.

:15:37. > :15:41.Her first serve has just gone walkabout at the moment. A punishing

:15:42. > :16:10.return. I have been wondering why she has

:16:11. > :16:15.not tried that serve out wide. Possibly from the way that

:16:16. > :16:20.Torro-Flor hits it, she hits under it to give it a really flat affect.

:16:21. > :16:31.She doesn't like that serve but I have been waiting for it. Well, on

:16:32. > :16:38.the deuce point, serve open. And there she has held on. But not

:16:39. > :16:42.without being put under a little bit of pressure. It is a very big

:16:43. > :16:51.challenge to play Venus, because Venus is a bit erratic historically.

:16:52. > :16:58.As the years have gone by she has learnt to temper that power and be

:16:59. > :17:02.more consistent, and yet you are just not sure what the best

:17:03. > :17:07.players. Torro-Flor started off playing Venus at the middle and

:17:08. > :17:11.actually causing her some problems. But the French, Venus was beaten by

:17:12. > :17:15.a player that played her up the middle. He had to have a lot of

:17:16. > :17:17.courage to do that. You have got to be very deep with the ball serve in

:17:18. > :17:35.the middle. That is better. She has decided that

:17:36. > :17:40.she's going to try to push Venus from corner to corner, and if she

:17:41. > :17:58.does it that well, Torro-Flor will points.

:17:59. > :18:40.That unforced error from Torro-Flor coming. Not sure if she was

:18:41. > :18:42.indecisive which way to Pete ought -- which way to heat or if it was

:18:43. > :19:05.just more force from Venus. Well played. Sets up with that

:19:06. > :19:17.backhand down the line again. She does look that shot. She really

:19:18. > :19:57.does. That was such a short serve. 64 mph

:19:58. > :20:03.and it was barely halfway into the box. That is what resulted in the

:20:04. > :20:10.error. She could not quite believe how short it was.

:20:11. > :20:30.Venus has served an ace in every service game she has had, and with

:20:31. > :20:46.the exception of one game, it has been the final point of every game.

:20:47. > :20:56.Torro-Flor a little bit lucky to get away with that. The Venus decided

:20:57. > :21:58.the ball was going crosscourt very early and got away with that.

:21:59. > :22:01.Torro-Flor, most of her errors have come from being a little bit late on

:22:02. > :22:14.the forehand side. But her first serve is still a worry

:22:15. > :22:17.for her. Only 47%. If she could just get it up to 57%, I think she would

:22:18. > :23:05.be enjoying life a lot more. We had one slip from Torro-Flor

:23:06. > :23:10.before, and just that one there from Venus, being wrong-footed. It was

:23:11. > :23:19.powerfully struck by Torro-Flor. And the wrong footing which has

:23:20. > :23:41.resulted in the slip. Heading across to the forehand court

:23:42. > :24:03.really powerfully struck. She was not hurt, that is the main thing.

:24:04. > :24:10.Torro-Flor has not been asked to go and change her undergarments. The

:24:11. > :24:14.chair of Great Britain had to check with her as to whether she was

:24:15. > :24:16.wearing a black bra, which you can see beneath her white T-shirt. There

:24:17. > :24:23.are very strict clothing regulations. She was perhaps going

:24:24. > :24:27.to have to go and change it. I'm not sure whether you could see it

:24:28. > :24:33.through but a... , the strapping was just a bit visible, the sports bra.

:24:34. > :24:41.But it was Venus who disappeared for a minute to take a bathroom break

:24:42. > :24:43.and it was not Torro-Flor, so she seems to have been allowed to get

:24:44. > :25:21.away with it. They are very strict. It has actually been awhile since

:25:22. > :25:25.Venus has played here, despite the fact that she has played Wimbledon

:25:26. > :25:30.so many times. Last year she was hampered by a back injury and pulled

:25:31. > :25:34.out. So the last time she played was two years ago and she lost to

:25:35. > :25:38.Vesnina in the first round. Be Crown has not seen a lot of her. -- the

:25:39. > :26:06.crowd. A very rapid service game, holding

:26:07. > :26:21.to zero. One place for the game. -- one ace for the game. Taking her

:26:22. > :26:40.tally to seven for the match. That is an awfully good shot. So

:26:41. > :26:48.much easier when the first serve goes in. A really good, flat serve.

:26:49. > :26:51.And she measures this one very well and then just nailed it crosscourt.

:26:52. > :27:21.It is well disguised. That was just not a great second

:27:22. > :27:45.serve. Well played. She had Venus on the

:27:46. > :28:00.run. The Spanish player is just not

:28:01. > :28:04.consistent enough. It is as if she's a little conscious of who she is

:28:05. > :28:12.playing. Difficult to concentrate through the points. So much of

:28:13. > :28:19.playing the Williams sisters over the years has been reputation. You

:28:20. > :28:20.start having some doubts about your server and waste too much time

:28:21. > :28:44.thinking about it. -- your serve. We remain with serve in the second

:28:45. > :28:50.set. But with Torro-Flor, she has had a notable win this year, beating

:28:51. > :28:56.Angelique Kerber, so she has beaten a top ten player. Part of her

:28:57. > :28:59.emergence and something of a breakthrough year, starting to make

:29:00. > :29:04.an impact on the tour. That should give her a great deal of confidence,

:29:05. > :29:10.knowing she can beat players of that level on the tour. It is all right.

:29:11. > :29:16.She has the game. But sometimes I think she's almost serving a little

:29:17. > :29:25.bit too quickly. Not taking her time when she goes to serve. I know that

:29:26. > :29:28.the general series that they are trying to -- General theory is they

:29:29. > :29:31.are trying to speed the players upset they are not taking too long

:29:32. > :29:35.in between points and Fiona Edwards told players right at the beginning

:29:36. > :29:41.when she tossed the coin, she said, remember, there is a time warning

:29:42. > :29:46.about how long you can take. They really are trying to stop those

:29:47. > :29:50.taking too long, but somehow I think Torro-Flor has still not quite

:29:51. > :29:53.settle down. There are a lot of nerves on the opening match. It is

:29:54. > :29:57.difficult dying somebody with the reputation of Venus. -- playing

:29:58. > :30:20.somebody. but serving. A solid serve, she did

:30:21. > :30:24.not hit it as hard as she can bet placement right into the body of

:30:25. > :30:30.Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, and very deep. -- that placement right into

:30:31. > :31:00.the body. Sudeep! -- so deep! Well struck with

:31:01. > :31:16.a degree of venom in it. Lovely shot.

:31:17. > :31:28.Pretty simple, big first serve, short return. Stroke the ball into

:31:29. > :31:34.the corner. Come on, Venus, we haven't had an A/C at this game, we

:31:35. > :31:42.have had one in every other game. It is this point coming up, to hold

:31:43. > :31:49.serve to love, you know it! -- we haven't had an ace in this game.

:31:50. > :32:19.Close! Another hold to love. Broke the

:32:20. > :32:28.pattern of serving an ace per game. That is going to upset you know! For

:32:29. > :32:32.the American, these of his games are going by in the blink of an eye and

:32:33. > :32:37.that has got to be a worry for Torro-Flor, she is not getting any

:32:38. > :32:41.points on the board when Venus is serving. That has always been the

:32:42. > :32:46.story of the game against Venus. Doesn't let you play, half the

:32:47. > :32:52.time. An important game for Torro-Flor. She has the new balls,

:32:53. > :32:54.she wants to make the most of it. Not a bad way to start with those

:32:55. > :33:17.new balls. The deep second serve. Those long

:33:18. > :34:02.arms of Venus, jammed. But for Torro-Flor, her first

:34:03. > :34:21.service returns are just over 50%, a slow moving the right direction. --

:34:22. > :34:28.a slow move in the right direction. Right on the line! She needed that.

:34:29. > :34:45.She knows she needed it. A little self encouragement also required. It

:34:46. > :34:51.took Venus Williams in that first set, getting the break when it was

:34:52. > :34:56.5-5 to go ahead, and then she served the set, could we see a similar

:34:57. > :35:01.pattern in the second? That's the difficulty for the player who is

:35:02. > :35:07.struggling, as they suddenly get a little tired and indecisive when it

:35:08. > :35:12.gets close to the end of the set. That was a very good first service

:35:13. > :35:17.selection from Torro-Flor. A beautiful day. What a gorgeous

:35:18. > :35:25.opening day for Wimbledon. Very warm. But not unbearable. Most

:35:26. > :35:33.conditions to play in, probably nicer to play in than to watch. --

:35:34. > :35:37.nice conditions to play in. It is good for both players, one from

:35:38. > :35:47.Spain, they like the warmth, and good for Venus as well from Florida.

:35:48. > :35:49.Venus is of course dressed in her own line of clothing. It looks

:35:50. > :36:27.really nice on her. The wild return which we have seen

:36:28. > :36:34.more than once. She flips a little, Torro-Flor, from the fist clenched

:36:35. > :37:35.when she holds serve to frustration. That is a nice serve.

:37:36. > :38:07.She is right to challenge that. She had it really hard. UMPIRE: Replay

:38:08. > :38:21.the point. Hawk-Eye says it is in. Another rocket down the middle.

:38:22. > :38:33.Timing her serve really nicely. There it is! Just for you, the

:38:34. > :38:41.junior! -- just for you, the junior. Yet another hold to love. 4-4, with

:38:42. > :38:45.serve, in the second set, but Venus has the advantage, having won the

:38:46. > :38:50.first set. She is looking very calm and collected. She certainly is

:38:51. > :38:59.looking very much in control of things. I would imagine she will

:39:00. > :39:02.take a bit of a lash out some of these shops, pressuring her opponent

:39:03. > :39:10.Torro-Flor to get some first serves in. -- at some of these shots. That

:39:11. > :39:54.wasn't far away. She should have made that and she

:39:55. > :39:58.knows it! There have been relatively few wayward shots from Venus. That

:39:59. > :40:02.is one of the things that has definitely happened, as time has

:40:03. > :40:12.gone by, she has definitely learned to put a little more spin and

:40:13. > :40:19.control on the ball. Good shot! Again, the first serve. An easy play

:40:20. > :40:24.for her as she gets that first serve in. Such an important hold this will

:40:25. > :40:57.be. Coming to the net, just left acres

:40:58. > :41:01.of space for a passing shot. Sometimes that happens. You come in

:41:02. > :41:06.and you cannot quite get the ball really where you want to, and the

:41:07. > :41:16.top-spin forehand stands up to much, so it's easy for the person to

:41:17. > :41:24.make a passing shot. Too good a return. 40-0. How things can turn!

:41:25. > :41:54.The pressure is on. What a time for a double fault! At

:41:55. > :41:58.4-4, trailing by one set to love. She had only served one double fault

:41:59. > :42:00.right at the beginning of the match. You can tell it is because she is

:42:01. > :42:43.getting indecisive. Yes! That is more like it! A lovely

:42:44. > :42:51.shot. She really needed it and she really needs this hold of serve.

:42:52. > :42:59.What an important hold, at 4-4 and trailing by one set to love.

:43:00. > :43:09.She's not exactly out of the woods. But that will have given her quite a

:43:10. > :43:14.boost to know that she held off a challenge from Venus, and having

:43:15. > :43:18.40-0 on her serve and being taken to deuce and managing to come through.

:43:19. > :43:28.She is still in there, still hanging in this match. A little chat going

:43:29. > :43:45.on with the umpire. Between Torro-Flor and Fiona Edwards.

:43:46. > :43:53.Putting in a telephone call to somebody for something. Giving

:43:54. > :44:02.everyone a chance to stretch their legs during the change of ends. What

:44:03. > :44:07.a stunning day! They had nearly 40,000 people here earlier on.

:44:08. > :44:15.Obviously the macro Mary factor was an opportunity, even if you did not

:44:16. > :44:18.have Centre Court there were places you could watch on the big screen.

:44:19. > :44:23.Yesterday the official word from Wimbledon was that there were more

:44:24. > :44:27.people queueing than they had tickets for Centre Court and Court

:44:28. > :44:31.One so if you did want ground admission, please do not turn up

:44:32. > :45:22.until today! Still with serve in this second set.

:45:23. > :45:41.She made it! Wonderful play! So easy to just get your racket to much on

:45:42. > :46:03.the inside of that ball can slide it out. -- and slide it out.

:46:04. > :46:12.A disappointing shot from Torro-Flor. She actually centred

:46:13. > :46:17.that ball really well. That would have made a difference to be leading

:46:18. > :46:43.5-4 and 30-15. She would have made Venus think a little.

:46:44. > :46:57.Great shot! That borders appeared into the crowd! It really had Venus

:46:58. > :47:02.on the stretch -- should -- that ball disappeared into the crowd. A

:47:03. > :47:09.view torturing heads. It's important for Venus to hit a big first serve

:47:10. > :47:17.here. Not much breeze out here today. A little tension. Yellow Mac

:47:18. > :47:48.just missing! Now look at the scoreline! And

:47:49. > :47:57.Torro-Flor has a break and a set point to level this match up! Venus

:47:58. > :48:02.looking a little edgy all the way through that point, choosing the

:48:03. > :48:15.wrong way. Is the nerve going to hold for this? Set point. Giving a

:48:16. > :48:26.gift. A nice serve but Torro-Flor really should have made it harder

:48:27. > :48:39.than that. The first break point but Venus has had against her opponent

:48:40. > :48:48.in the whole match. The ace getting Venus out of a spot of bother. How

:48:49. > :48:57.much would she like another one right now? She only has a quota of

:48:58. > :49:05.one per game! And in one game she didn't serve and a is so maybe she

:49:06. > :49:26.can come up with one now! -- she didn't serve an ace.

:49:27. > :49:52.A fabulous shot! Torro-Flor has played some important matches,

:49:53. > :50:00.particularly in the Federation cup. I would challenge that. It may not

:50:01. > :50:12.be a correct challenge, that no, she says, no, don't.

:50:13. > :50:24.We are going to have another set point! A good return of serve from

:50:25. > :50:30.Torro-Flor. When she really goes flat out for it, and gets all her

:50:31. > :50:42.energy onto that she hits a fabulous shot on the forehand.

:50:43. > :50:52.My goodness! She needed that to go her way. Look how it has shaped up

:50:53. > :51:04.this match. Torro-Flor has fought back and she has levelled the match

:51:05. > :51:08.at one set each. 6-4. SUE BARKER: It was always going to be a tough one

:51:09. > :51:11.for Venus. While they change ends, this is what has been happening

:51:12. > :51:16.elsewhere, defending champion Andy Murray was back on Centre Court,

:51:17. > :51:19.back to winning ways, winning in straight sets over David Goffin of

:51:20. > :51:22.Belgium. He got a standing ovation when he walked on Centre Court, back

:51:23. > :51:24.to winning ways, winning in straight sets over David Goffin of Belgium.

:51:25. > :51:27.He got a standing ovation when he walked ovation when he left it.

:51:28. > :51:33.Giving the crowd just what they wanted, another comfortable victory

:51:34. > :51:39.for Andy Murray. Bernard tonic is also true in straight sets. He beat

:51:40. > :51:43.his Russian opponent 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. He was into members from last,

:51:44. > :51:46.Bernard Tommy, reaching the fourth round, and he's looking good is

:51:47. > :51:51.today a low-key place Tomas Berdych, then the sixth seed, in the

:51:52. > :51:54.next round. This man is always dangerous in the draw, the big

:51:55. > :51:59.serving South African Kevin Anderson, seeded number 20. He is

:52:00. > :52:04.looming around Andy Murray's quarter of the draw. He beat his civilian

:52:05. > :52:08.opponent and he's trying to gain a British passport in time the Davis

:52:09. > :52:14.Cup in March next year but it was in straight sets today, the young civil

:52:15. > :52:22.union. Jeremy Chardy of France has just beaten Dan Cox on court 18. He

:52:23. > :52:26.did it in four sets. Dan Cox kept his hopes alive by winning the third

:52:27. > :52:31.set type break but in the end experience told and Jeremy Chardy is

:52:32. > :52:41.through and the wild card from Great Britain, Dan Cox, is out. And we

:52:42. > :52:45.will be seeing this man on Centre Court later. He was the runner-up

:52:46. > :52:51.last year, Novak Djokovic, arriving today, she is God respect in his

:52:52. > :52:55.corner now. -- he has got Boris Becker. Hoping to lead him to win

:52:56. > :53:02.the Wimbledon title, use one it once before. Djokovic on Centre Court

:53:03. > :53:06.later on playing Andrei God above. Before we return to the Venus

:53:07. > :53:12.Williams match, Dimitrov is two sets and a break up against Harrison.

:53:13. > :53:15.Lena Mac has taken the first set and add-on court 12 men are locked in

:53:16. > :53:31.battle. Let's rejoin court to. A deciding set. Venus Williams has

:53:32. > :53:35.conceded the second set. She felt she had opportunities where it she

:53:36. > :53:40.could have wrapped it up in straight sets but Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor had

:53:41. > :53:52.other ideas. Now it is up to Torro-Flor to make sure she doesn't

:53:53. > :53:58.have a letup. I would not be surprised to see Venus trying to up

:53:59. > :54:11.the intensity again and just go for broke. But I am not sure if this is

:54:12. > :54:14.the best way to play. Torro-Flor does not strike you as the kind of

:54:15. > :54:18.player who could be muscled out of the game. She's got a great deal of

:54:19. > :54:40.firepower of her own. With shots like that! A pretty

:54:41. > :54:45.awesome forehand. I like the way that she produces it. Not too big a

:54:46. > :54:55.backswing, quite compact, she gets a body weight into the ball. -- she

:54:56. > :54:59.gets her body weight into the ball. She hasn't served out wide into the

:55:00. > :55:05.deuce court that much. The more I watch this, the more I get memories

:55:06. > :55:15.of Conchita Martinez and her first serve, quite a load tours, and quite

:55:16. > :55:28.quick action. That's a great serve. This holding of serve will help to

:55:29. > :55:34.build her confidence. Sometimes they have this step which says, if you

:55:35. > :55:39.get that many serves in, or that many returns in, that will make all

:55:40. > :55:51.the difference. Certainly for Torro-Flor, if she could raise her

:55:52. > :55:53.first serve level to 60% or 65%, I think that she could then have a go

:55:54. > :56:08.at Venus's serve. A terrific serve out wide but

:56:09. > :56:16.perhaps did not do enough with it from the net. A slight disadvantage

:56:17. > :57:05.for Venus to serve second every set. Nothing wrong with that serve.

:57:06. > :57:18.Beautiful! Oh yes! There is her ace. She says thank you very much. Love

:57:19. > :57:24.game. The stage of Venus's Korea where she has so many other

:57:25. > :57:27.interests, she has seven grand slam titles to her name, she does a lot

:57:28. > :57:37.of other things but she still loves to play tennis, spite the fact that

:57:38. > :57:42.she was laid low by that disease. It is the competitive streak that never

:57:43. > :57:47.leaves a champion. If you play as well as she does come you might as

:57:48. > :58:04.well keep playing! For how long, one wonders. She has been really injury

:58:05. > :58:10.free, Venus. I know she has a bit of taping on her left leg but it is

:58:11. > :58:15.very seldom that you ever see her injured all with tapes. I know she

:58:16. > :58:22.had a bad back earlier this year and last year, and her wrist has given

:58:23. > :58:27.her problems along the way. But she just has a great physique. Not happy

:58:28. > :59:09.with that return. Terrific aggression from Venus. Very

:59:10. > :59:46.good at the net, in the high atmosphere up there. Never misses a

:59:47. > :00:01.smash. Has she challenged it? It was clearly out. She didn't. With so few

:00:02. > :00:08.breaks of serve this has become an important point. Venus might take a

:00:09. > :00:13.second look at that serve. So close to both lines. Whether it is in is

:00:14. > :01:02.irrelevant because it was called in. these two players. Torro-Flor was

:01:03. > :01:11.only eight when Williams won her first Wimbledon title. She does not

:01:12. > :01:15.seem phased by the champion standing on the other side of the net. She

:01:16. > :01:20.could be playing anyone out there, it feels. She is going and getting

:01:21. > :01:32.on with her game, it seems, at the moment. Torro-Flor has sort of

:01:33. > :01:40.settled down, finally. It took her asset a bit to feel that she was

:01:41. > :01:47.almost biding her time in the rallies, not panicking early. -- it

:01:48. > :01:52.took her a set and a bit. It has been hard to tell who has made more

:01:53. > :01:57.unforced errors and in actual fact, it has been Torro-Flor made a few

:01:58. > :02:02.more unforced errors. She has had to struggle to win her serves more than

:02:03. > :02:20.Venus, who has been getting her serves a very comfortably.

:02:21. > :02:24.You still tend to feel that the class of Venus Williams should come

:02:25. > :02:34.through this one. I know, but I have also seen Venus

:02:35. > :03:54.just full to lately. -- just faster. It is difficult for either player to

:03:55. > :04:18.get a handle on the other one's service.

:04:19. > :04:25.It seems that the court is playing pretty quickly. We have been talking

:04:26. > :04:27.over the years about how much slower the Wimbledon grass has been. I

:04:28. > :05:13.can't say that this looks slow. The second serves have not been

:05:14. > :05:34.happy hunting ground for Torro-Flor. When she gets her second serve in,

:05:35. > :05:45.she is only winning 55% of the points.

:05:46. > :06:02.That was a lovely shot. Great angle. Quick footwork around that, and that

:06:03. > :06:03.compact swing on the forehand and then the explosiveness of that shot.

:06:04. > :06:28.It is quite terrific. The crowd enjoyed that one! I know

:06:29. > :06:33.that Torro-Flor can hit some good drop shots on clay but she has not

:06:34. > :06:37.come up with anything resembling a good drop shot today on the grass.

:06:38. > :07:07.She can afford a smile at least. There we have it, a precious break

:07:08. > :07:36.point early on in the deciding set for Venus Williams.

:07:37. > :07:46.But when it mattered, break point, backhand down the line. The other

:07:47. > :07:51.side of the net, Torro-Flor furious, battered the tennis ball

:07:52. > :07:58.high into the stands and into the crowd inferior.

:07:59. > :08:04.-- in fury. She may be disappointed but it was a very well contested

:08:05. > :08:07.point. Superior concentration from Venus. She was really determined,

:08:08. > :08:22.too. The drop shot at 30-30 made all the

:08:23. > :08:27.difference. That is the anger. She gets a warning from the umpire. It

:08:28. > :08:32.is sometimes worth getting a warning to get it out of your system. As

:08:33. > :08:40.long as you don't hurt anybody. A lot of hard work for the 22-year-old

:08:41. > :08:45.Spanish girl. It is uphill from here. One - one and now you are a

:08:46. > :08:51.break down in the decider against Venus Williams. Things look very

:08:52. > :08:58.different when your break is down as opposed to when you are an serve

:08:59. > :09:03.against the years. Suddenly she rose half a foot taller on the other side

:09:04. > :09:10.of the net. They serves, a few miles and our faster at you. -- the serves

:09:11. > :10:40.come a few miles faster at you. To reflect ground strokes from

:10:41. > :10:46.Torro-Flor. -- fantastic ground strokes.

:10:47. > :11:16.Venus Williams has had illness and had to withdraw from Madrid. Lost in

:11:17. > :11:44.the second round of Paris. Another good forehand from Maria

:11:45. > :12:01.Teresa. The ball comes off her racket with

:12:02. > :12:13.seemingly very little backswing required.

:12:14. > :12:52.A great serve to come out with at 30-30.

:12:53. > :13:00.Torro-Flor keeps herself in the game and keeps the pressure on Venus. You

:13:01. > :13:06.see that position when Torro-Flor gets her racket back. It is a

:13:07. > :13:14.compact swing but she looks in such a position of power.

:13:15. > :14:20.Good serve a game. -- good serve again.

:14:21. > :14:28.The crowd is starting to get a little bit vocal. They really do

:14:29. > :14:29.love Venus Williams here, for all the history, the titles she has won

:14:30. > :14:40.over the years. It is an interesting draw she has

:14:41. > :14:45.here, because she is only seeded number 30.

:14:46. > :14:55.Good forehand from Venus. She is only seeded number 30, which seems

:14:56. > :15:01.very low Venus Williams. But the seed who is up there, Petra Kvitova,

:15:02. > :15:13.in a couple of rounds, who is number six, -- number six. The drop shot

:15:14. > :15:20.has not worked. If you are going to drop shot Venus, you better be good.

:15:21. > :15:25.Plenty of opportunities in the bottom half of the draw. It is

:15:26. > :15:28.filled with players who probably, I would say, are better on surfaces

:15:29. > :15:44.other than grass. Torro-Flor has got to watch that she

:15:45. > :15:50.does not just fade out of this match now. Because Venus Williams has

:15:51. > :16:15.three break points for a 5-2 lead in the deciding set.

:16:16. > :16:34.You just feel she is motoring, now, towards the second round. A hold of

:16:35. > :16:38.serve is all that will do it. Torro-Flor stuck with her for the

:16:39. > :16:40.first half of this deciding set and just as she got the break, she has

:16:41. > :16:51.managed to step on the gas. Venus has worked very hard to edge

:16:52. > :16:55.ahead. She had another spat at the edge of the second set but she

:16:56. > :16:57.really hung in much better than Torro-Flor at the beginning of this

:16:58. > :17:10.one. Torro-Flor has just given Venus too

:17:11. > :17:18.much help. Too many errors and just sort of fluctuating intensity. So

:17:19. > :17:22.the one thing that Torro-Flor has to do to improve is too weak to get

:17:23. > :17:29.back consistency up there. Her attitude and... Her attitude is

:17:30. > :17:33.fine, her demeanour on the court, but she needs to just concentrate

:17:34. > :17:35.every single point. She has given away too many and Venus has the

:17:36. > :17:50.experience and the game to survive. Venus Williams serving for the

:17:51. > :18:19.match, after some warm applause from the crowd.

:18:20. > :18:30.Another slip. One of the more interesting points of the match, as

:18:31. > :18:33.a matter of fact. A variety of balls and an aggressive account from

:18:34. > :18:47.Torro-Flor before she hit the floor. That takes the ace count up to 11 in

:18:48. > :19:19.this match. She has given herself three match

:19:20. > :19:25.points for a place in the second round, and she is flying through the

:19:26. > :19:58.second half of this deciding set. The last nine points were all from

:19:59. > :20:18.Venus. And that will do it! Venus Williams

:20:19. > :20:24.into the second round of Wimbledon on her return. She missed last

:20:25. > :20:30.year. And have the crowd have enjoyed seeing her back here. And

:20:31. > :20:36.she is enjoying it, too. Taken to a decider by the young 22-year-old

:20:37. > :20:38.from Spain, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. But Venus Williams, some relief she

:20:39. > :20:55.has come through in three sets. She makes it through to the second

:20:56. > :21:00.round. Torro-Flor, no doubt we will see much more of her in the future.

:21:01. > :21:07.Venus Williams at 34 years of age, five times Wimbledon champion, comes

:21:08. > :21:13.back to these lawns and we will see her again in the second round. I

:21:14. > :21:18.think she really played excellently. She was quite consistent. She had

:21:19. > :21:29.some magnificent chance. A big smile from Venus. Venus is looking very

:21:30. > :21:41.good. Certainly I can see that she can do well this tournament, I

:21:42. > :21:45.really can. You can she that if she plays -- that she could have come up

:21:46. > :21:49.with an even bigger upset there. That bottom half of the draw is

:21:50. > :21:56.certainly an interesting one for the players that are there. Just how

:21:57. > :22:00.open it is. But three sets. It was an interesting much to see how

:22:01. > :22:07.Torro-Flor, little flashes of the game that promises to build on for

:22:08. > :22:11.the future. She has an absolutely superb first serve. But it is not

:22:12. > :22:16.consistent enough. And she gets a little indecisive about both serve

:22:17. > :22:20.positioning and her second serve. So I think with a little more

:22:21. > :22:24.experience she will begin to realise which shots were. Forehand is

:22:25. > :22:33.fantastic, it really is. It does not move or that well at wide. But very

:22:34. > :22:38.good. A competitive game and Venus looking awfully good. I thought she

:22:39. > :22:44.looked very good in Paris but then she made mistakes in the second

:22:45. > :22:47.round against a younger who played -- youngster who played so well. If

:22:48. > :22:51.she can keep a concentration together she can do so well here.

:22:52. > :22:56.This was match point the Venus Williams. She won the first set,

:22:57. > :23:04.lost the second and then add herself match points. A fairly muted

:23:05. > :23:09.celebration, first round back at Wimbledon after a year missing from

:23:10. > :23:15.injury. She was a little relieved, perhaps, to get through. She came

:23:16. > :23:20.back to win the third set 6-2 in the decider. A match that lasted a

:23:21. > :23:25.little shy of two hammers out here on Court Number Two. Venus Williams

:23:26. > :23:32.is safely into the second round here at Wimbledon.

:23:33. > :23:39.You missed last year because of a back injury. How does it feel to be

:23:40. > :23:45.back on this special courts? Fantastic. I haven't been here since

:23:46. > :23:48.the 2012 Olympics. I have a lot of great memories from that and so many

:23:49. > :23:54.great memories just from being here throughout the last 17 years or so.

:23:55. > :23:57.You have a tremendous 3-set record here at the Championships but

:23:58. > :24:01.recently in major is your 3-set record has been tough. How did you

:24:02. > :24:07.like how you finished this one in the final set? Yes, I did play

:24:08. > :24:10.really motivated and I have been on a lot of lay-offs so it is not

:24:11. > :24:14.always easy to win the match as you want to win when you come back so

:24:15. > :24:19.many times from injury. But I just feel like the more I can play, the

:24:20. > :24:24.better I will get. It is our job as commentators to look at the draw.

:24:25. > :24:27.You are in the same section as Kvitova. What do you like about your

:24:28. > :24:38.part of the draw? What have you noticed? Really all that matters to

:24:39. > :24:44.me is that I get to the next round. Are you and Serena playing this year

:24:45. > :24:49.in doubles? Yes, we are going to get out there and go for it. How many

:24:50. > :24:57.championships happy when, singers and doubles? Not enough excavation

:24:58. > :25:06.work I would love to add to it. -- not enough! I would love to add to

:25:07. > :25:12.it. Venus Williams there, saying the more I play, the better I get. It

:25:13. > :25:17.was only recently that she said she has been around a little bit over

:25:18. > :25:21.forever, at the age of 34. She made reference to all the injuries she

:25:22. > :25:31.has suffered, and still coming back, still going, but three sets...

:25:32. > :25:43.STUDIO: Thank you to Alison and Virginia. We are going to take you

:25:44. > :25:48.here on BBC over to Court Number One to see Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded 14

:25:49. > :25:56.at these championships up against Juergen Melzer, the 32-year-old who

:25:57. > :25:59.reached a career-high 38. I'm just hearing at the moment that there are

:26:00. > :26:06.no commentators yet on Court Number One. , apparently they have just

:26:07. > :26:11.arrived. Tim Henman and Andrew Cotter. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one of

:26:12. > :26:20.the great entertainers. Let's hand over to Andrew and Tim.

:26:21. > :26:31.ANDREW COTTER: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a great entertainer and great player

:26:32. > :26:43.but he's form, he has been struggling a little bit this season.

:26:44. > :26:48.-- his form. And Juergen Melzer, his opponent is 33 years old now. This

:26:49. > :27:01.should be quite interesting, Tim. Not an easy opener for Jo-Wilfried

:27:02. > :27:09.Tsonga. Mac I think we should make it clear first of all that we have

:27:10. > :27:15.been here a good five minutes! These slanderous comments from Sue in the

:27:16. > :27:17.studio! People love to see Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to play and they

:27:18. > :27:23.think it could be dangerous. But he's a little bit off the ball,

:27:24. > :27:27.perhaps. Not his best. That is right and that has been one of the

:27:28. > :27:32.problems, one of the predicament in his career, he is capable of some

:27:33. > :27:39.fantastic tennis... We reflect back to Wimbledon when he beat Federer

:27:40. > :27:43.from 2-0 down and he is capable of such explosive tennis. It is whether

:27:44. > :27:47.he can keep performing and keep those levels high because if he can

:27:48. > :27:55.do that and beat the best and string it together, he is capable of

:27:56. > :27:58.winning a major title. Advocates Melzer -- up against Juergen Melzer

:27:59. > :28:06.in the first round, he's experienced and back from injury. I have played

:28:07. > :28:19.four times and he has Adhyani all four. -- and he has won all four.

:28:20. > :28:24.It is always interesting to see how Jo-Wilfried Tsonga plays, because he

:28:25. > :28:30.can have spells of brilliance and then perhaps drift away for moments

:28:31. > :28:34.and then come back. She has not quite got that consistency. They

:28:35. > :28:40.never really let him break into the real operation of the game. He has

:28:41. > :28:43.drifted down a bit now. He's 17th in the world are remembered. But just

:28:44. > :28:49.that consistency, that relentless high-quality, always missing from

:28:50. > :28:52.his game. But if he can get on a very good run, he can go a long way

:28:53. > :29:02.in this tournament. No doubt about that. His opponent, Jurgen Melzer,

:29:03. > :29:07.he is such an age that... You have probably played quite a few times.

:29:08. > :29:14.Yes, thank you! Not quite as old as me but we had a few battles in our

:29:15. > :29:22.time and he is a guy who has had some fantastic results, both on the

:29:23. > :29:33.singles and the doubles court. 33 now. Nearly back inside the top 50.

:29:34. > :29:38.He has been to the last 16 per couple of times here, including last

:29:39. > :30:01.year when he lost to yarn of age in five sets. He got to the semifinals

:30:02. > :30:08.of the French Open in 2010. The has the highest world ranking of eight.

:30:09. > :30:14.-- he has. So he definitely knows how to cause an upset. Although he

:30:15. > :30:22.has never beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he has lost on four occasions. An

:30:23. > :30:26.adjustment is made because of the grass court record, by the all

:30:27. > :30:31.England club. And rightly so, because it is a surface that players

:30:32. > :30:35.do not really get to experience too much. Although that will change a

:30:36. > :30:39.bit next year, a longer grass court season. Semifinalist a couple of

:30:40. > :30:47.times at Wimbledon. And in the not too distant past, 2011, 2012, and

:30:48. > :30:57.runner-up in the Australian Open to Djokovic.

:30:58. > :31:05.He suddenly launched himself as a huge talent and everyone thought he

:31:06. > :31:21.would surely win a Grand Slam. But there are rarely certainties in

:31:22. > :31:25.sport. The umpire from San Marino. A few spectators have departed and

:31:26. > :31:32.will come back after refreshment after the impressive performance

:31:33. > :31:36.from Grigor Dimitrov. He, of course, the winner at Queen's. And you look

:31:37. > :31:47.at Queen's and what happened at Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was

:31:48. > :31:59.destroyed. That was by Marinko Matosevic.

:32:00. > :32:14.There is blue sky overhead, but some dark stuff out there. It is a gloomy

:32:15. > :32:24.afternoon. But still quite warm. That is what we like to see. The

:32:25. > :32:32.roof is coming full Court Number One. You know about such things, Tim

:32:33. > :32:36.Henman. Fingers crossed, it will arrive in 2019. It is in the

:32:37. > :32:41.extensive design phase and it looks mighty impressive. When you look at

:32:42. > :32:46.what a success it has been on Centre Court, for the tournament to have

:32:47. > :32:55.two, to guarantee playful close to 27,000 people and the fans on TV, it

:32:56. > :33:01.will be another great addition. This is the head-to-head, in favour of

:33:02. > :33:17.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. They have never met on grass.

:33:18. > :33:26.A Spanish fan, proudly flying the flag for neither player. And

:33:27. > :33:28.probably not for the Spanish football team any more. The French

:33:29. > :33:47.are doing well, though. Working with new coaches for

:33:48. > :33:55.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, relatively new, since October last year, that was

:33:56. > :34:02.after parting company with Roger Rashid. Roger Rashid working

:34:03. > :34:11.successfully now with Grigor Dimitrov. What are you looking for,

:34:12. > :34:17.if you were a fan of Tsonga, what would you be looking for from this

:34:18. > :34:23.match? The first shot in the rally, whether he is serving all can get

:34:24. > :34:28.onto the return, he needs to dictate the plays. When you have the

:34:29. > :34:35.athleticism and power, you want to see him hitting big serves and big

:34:36. > :34:43.forehand. The Melzer, being left-handed, we will look to see him

:34:44. > :34:47.swinging the serve out wide onto Tsonga's backhand. And also looking

:34:48. > :34:56.to dictate. Trying to finish the point at the net. Melzer is a

:34:57. > :35:03.doubles champion. He does volley well. Both of them will look to get

:35:04. > :35:11.onto the offence. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, his run came to an abrupt

:35:12. > :35:18.end at Queen's, beaten comfortably by Marinko Matosevic. Melzer lost in

:35:19. > :35:21.the first round to Dan Evans. They both come in looking for a little

:35:22. > :35:40.bit better. After that booming ace, encouraging

:35:41. > :37:02.sign since then for Melzer. Melzer thinking and asking. How did

:37:03. > :37:10.you see it? It is right in front of us. I saw it... Let me think. I

:37:11. > :37:36.thought it was Justin. Look at that. Confirmation. -- just in.

:37:37. > :37:41.Frustrating the Melzer, the call on the baseline, replaying the point.

:37:42. > :37:54.-- for Melzer. A few gossips. Break point in the

:37:55. > :38:19.first game. -- gasps. It happens often on the first

:38:20. > :38:20.day, when the grass is pure and very green. You cannot change direction

:38:21. > :39:09.too quickly. It is good, it is very good from

:39:10. > :39:53.Jurgen Melzer. Started with an ace, finished with

:39:54. > :40:02.an ace, both the same speed, 132 mph. That will do. Actually, he

:40:03. > :40:07.served pretty well. His first serve was working nicely. Nine out of ten

:40:08. > :40:16.landed. Melzer did well to create a break point. The sound of the serve

:40:17. > :40:25.reminded me of one of the last matches I played, the last match on

:40:26. > :40:29.tour was a -- against Tsonga. When you look at his game from a

:40:30. > :40:35.technical point of view, it is perhaps not the most sound, but when

:40:36. > :40:42.you look at his ability to muscle shots, he is a modern day player.

:40:43. > :40:44.You can hear it coming off the racket. It echoes around the arena.

:40:45. > :41:32.Tremendous. Instantly in a bit of bother. You

:41:33. > :41:38.have to question the strategy. He had a great serve and got the week

:41:39. > :41:41.replied. There was an opportunity to stamp his authority on the point. He

:41:42. > :41:49.did not do that and then he made the unforced error.

:41:50. > :42:59.Three break points the Tsonga. -- for Tsonga.

:43:00. > :43:04.And there it is. A touch of class from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He has the

:43:05. > :43:20.break. A little bit of discomfort on his

:43:21. > :43:26.own serve his game, Tsonga, but he looked impressive, even with the

:43:27. > :44:08.help from the green grass of Court Number One.

:44:09. > :44:56.When Melzer gets a look at the second serve of Tsonga, he has to do

:44:57. > :45:57.more than that. He cannot just return down the middle.

:45:58. > :46:06.A couple in this game that Tsonga has been wild with. And unforced

:46:07. > :46:28.errors that bring Melzer, again, to a break point.

:46:29. > :47:21.What a second serve. Right on the line.

:47:22. > :47:30.He stumbled his way through the game and eventually held. Struggling

:47:31. > :47:41.mainly because he could not land a first serve. It's looks pretty good

:47:42. > :47:46.on the board the Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He will be happy to be up 3-0. We

:47:47. > :47:53.talk, at this level of tennis, matches being decided on who wins

:47:54. > :48:00.the big points. Melzer has had break point on the two service games. He

:48:01. > :48:10.did not take them. Tsonga had one and he took it. The ever changing

:48:11. > :48:24.London skyline. They are working a lot on Battersea Power Station now.

:48:25. > :48:27.And all the way out to the south-west and the ever changing

:48:28. > :48:35.skyline of the All-England Club. Have you seen the potential

:48:36. > :48:47.designs? It is evolving. We have architects coming up with designs.

:48:48. > :48:57.Once everyone is happy with the design, it will need to go to the

:48:58. > :49:07.planners for planning permission. It will breeze through that process.

:49:08. > :50:17.Fingers crossed. Tsonga dealing well with that big kick.

:50:18. > :50:39.The first double four Melzer. -- for Melzer.

:50:40. > :50:54.That was beautifully dealt with by Tsonga. Again, I am not sure about

:50:55. > :51:03.the shot selection. There was certainly poor execution. It gives

:51:04. > :51:11.Tsonga a break point that will almost certainly be set point.

:51:12. > :51:15.He turns it on again on the big points and he has the double break

:51:16. > :51:39.in the first set, Tsonga. The coaching the white and red

:51:40. > :52:29.T-shirt, now steering Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

:52:30. > :53:06.It is all going the way of the number 14 seed.

:53:07. > :53:11.I get the impression that Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a player who

:53:12. > :53:22.needs confidence to get him a run and then it will start to snowball

:53:23. > :53:26.for him. I think you are right. You might call him typically French.

:53:27. > :53:30.When he gets on a roll, the confidence flowing through his

:53:31. > :53:34.veins, he can play unbelievably good tennis. A lot of times, his opponent

:53:35. > :53:45.does not feel in control of the match. Sadly, he has made an

:53:46. > :53:52.impressive start. -- certainly. I looked at a list of former Wimbledon

:53:53. > :53:58.boys champions. Jurgen Melzer was a former boys champion. It is

:53:59. > :54:02.interesting how few of them make it. You would think with talent at that

:54:03. > :54:19.age, you would go on, but looking at the list, Nicholas Marr -- Nicolas

:54:20. > :54:23.Mahut, Grigor Dimitrov, a winner, but there is no guarantee of

:54:24. > :54:28.success. What was your record as a boy? I played in 1992, the first

:54:29. > :54:47.match I played at Wimbledon. I played a grass court specialist

:54:48. > :54:54.from Mexico. I broke serve to go up to- one in the first set and lost

:54:55. > :55:06.6-2, 6-1. I was only on for 55 minutes. A little bit disgruntled.

:55:07. > :55:19.That is my point. You were essentially useless as a junior! I

:55:20. > :55:32.was useless. And then you kicked onto a great career.

:55:33. > :55:49.At the moment, it is hard going for the 1999 Boys' Singles champion.

:55:50. > :56:39.It could be a begel in the first set.

:56:40. > :56:44.There we are. That will do for Jurgen Melzer. Something on the

:56:45. > :56:58.board. I am sure he was feeling

:56:59. > :57:02.uncomfortable out here in this grand arena with nothing on the board. But

:57:03. > :57:52.still, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to serve for the first set.

:57:53. > :58:49.He has had a handful over the 130 mph mark.

:58:50. > :58:56.The sun was in his eyes? He has room to play with, some point in hand,

:58:57. > :59:18.but that was careless. And there it is, this time. An

:59:19. > :59:30.emphatic first set from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. 23 minutes of unpleasantness

:59:31. > :59:37.comes to an end for Jurgen Melzer. Tsonga in good shape. I am not sure

:59:38. > :59:43.when you saw them come out... I thought we thought it would be

:59:44. > :59:49.closer. It could be in the match to come. But Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

:59:50. > :59:53.pulverising Melzer there. It is interesting, when you reflect on the

:59:54. > :00:01.head-to-head. Perhaps it is a matchup that does not work. Melzer

:00:02. > :00:07.has the game to play well on grass. First serves is a good start but

:00:08. > :00:15.winning 43% behind the first serve and 33% behind a second serve will

:00:16. > :00:20.not get the job done. Tsonga with more unforced errors but more

:00:21. > :00:28.winners. He will hit wild shots, but he will hit impressive ones, as

:00:29. > :00:35.well. In summary, four Melzer, it will be a set he wants to put behind

:00:36. > :00:44.him and to get off to a fast start in the second set -- for Melzer. It

:00:45. > :00:53.is all about the selfie these days. He has just taken a very bad one.

:00:54. > :01:00.Delete that, try again. Stern look. He is not going to check it out. He

:01:01. > :01:05.knows it is good. He has done a bit of retail therapy. The T-shirt, the

:01:06. > :01:17.baseball cap... So what was he wearing when he came here? Not a

:01:18. > :01:21.lot. I will buy my clothing today. Talking about Jurgen Melzer, I said

:01:22. > :01:28.he struggled a bit at Queen's. He did but he had a decent run in the

:01:29. > :01:33.Netherlands last week. Got to the semifinals but he will be wondering

:01:34. > :01:37.what he can do differently now, because there is no answer, really,

:01:38. > :01:49.to... I suppose it was the power of Tsonga. At least Melzer here with

:01:50. > :02:48.new balls will start this second set.

:02:49. > :02:55.Six or seven really good ground shots there from Melzer in the rally

:02:56. > :04:16.but unless he moves forward, he does not get any reward from them.

:04:17. > :04:30.Beautifully done. You talk about his power, but the touch is there as

:04:31. > :04:37.well. And having been up 40-15 on his opening service game on this

:04:38. > :04:40.second set back to deuce, it only increases the importance of this

:04:41. > :05:28.game. He doesn't want to go down an early break.

:05:29. > :06:47.You do begin to think about the importance of this game just to get

:06:48. > :06:55.Melzer up and running in this set.
