:03:57. > :04:06.Murray's victory over Novak Djokovic ended a 77 year long wait for a

:06:35. > :06:41.champion, totally outclassing David Goffin. 6-once he has taken the
:06:42. > :06:47.first set. We will be heading there in a moment. I mentioned the fans
:06:48. > :06:56.queueing to go courtside, some of them were not so lucky but they have

:08:28. > :08:33.already two seeded players have gone. Let's first comp -- confirmed
:08:34. > :08:54.the order of play on Centre Court. Over on Court Number One Azarenka is
:08:55. > :09:02.seeded eighth, first up on Court Number One. Grigor Dimitrov against
:09:03. > :09:09.Ryan Harrison, a qualifier from the United States. Other matches we will
:09:10. > :09:19.be keeping an eye on, Tomas Berdych against Victor Hanescu. Then Venus
:09:20. > :09:24.Williams, the five-time champion, seeded 30 at this event, she will be
:09:25. > :09:34.on Court Number Two. James Ward has just got under way with his match
:09:35. > :09:38.against Youzhny. Don't forget you can follow many of the matches on
:09:39. > :09:50.the red button and online as well, and we will be hoping to go to the
:09:51. > :09:55.Konta match against Peng on BBC Two because that is a tight match in the
:09:56. > :10:12.third set. I mentioned some seeded players are out, and first Sam
:10:13. > :10:19.Stosur, who has promised so much here at Wimbledon is out in the
:10:20. > :10:52.first round. And one big surprise followed by another, Maria Kirilenko
:10:53. > :10:57.has put out Stephens. We are heading live to Centre Court for Andy Murray
:10:58. > :11:00.against David Goffin. Let's join our commentators, Tim Henman, John
:11:01. > :11:40.McEnroe and Mark Petchey. That is good. That second serve only
:11:41. > :11:59.75 mph in the middle of the box, it was really there to be punished.
:12:00. > :12:10.The fastest serve he has hit 124. His percentage of first serves
:12:11. > :12:22.is quite high so far and that is making life a whole lot easier for
:12:23. > :12:48.him. Almost 70% for him in this particular match.
:12:49. > :13:17.It is a much better idea to take that serve to his forehand.
:13:18. > :13:38.That was his fastest serve of this match at 124. The gap that appeared
:13:39. > :14:05.before this contest between these two is becoming very apparent.
:14:06. > :14:23.Just missed it. Two excellent athlete. Murray exceptional, and
:14:24. > :14:28.this ball was a fantastic ball. Made sure he didn't hit the posts, had a
:14:29. > :14:34.couple of things to contend with. He is up a set and a break, no
:14:35. > :16:30.unnecessary risk. Stunning defence from Murray. He is
:16:31. > :16:36.breathing hard, considering it is 6-1, 3-1 he seems to be feeling the
:16:37. > :17:06.effects. Keeps himself closer to Andy Murray
:17:07. > :17:13.in this second set, certainly closer than he was in the first. Are you
:17:14. > :17:24.guys ready for my theory on the serve or the volleyer? Did you think
:17:25. > :17:30.you would see the day when male players would be serving and staying
:17:31. > :17:35.back virtually every point? No, I didn't. When we saw Lleyton Hewitt
:17:36. > :17:43.playing in the 2002 Wimbledon final did you think you would ever
:17:44. > :17:50.watch... Neither one of them served and volleyed once. So we didn't
:17:51. > :18:19.think that what happened. Along comes a tennis manufacturer who is
:18:20. > :18:23.struggling. They suddenly develop a tennis racket tailor-made for the
:18:24. > :18:30.serve and volley. Some string company that has been struggling
:18:31. > :18:35.changes it to quicken them up a little. Then Tim Henman comes along.
:18:36. > :18:43.For me that is the big little. Then Tim Henman comes along.
:18:44. > :18:52.the surfaces. I think they need more variety. I hope you are right. Which
:18:53. > :18:58.I don't often say! In two weeks you will be saying it even more. We need
:18:59. > :19:02.more variety in the style of play. Some will choose that method, others
:19:03. > :19:28.will stick to their guns. Sure Andy Murray has played this
:19:29. > :19:41.first match through in his mind, I'm not sure whether he could envisage
:19:42. > :19:56.it going quite as well. 131, speeding things up.
:19:57. > :20:10.Blistering pace, and blisteringly quick. Goffin just being overwhelmed
:20:11. > :20:37.out here. Why wouldn't Goffin there, if you
:20:38. > :21:08.get the wide ball, come forward? Dare I say, serve and volley.
:21:09. > :21:36.There is one he was moving for. That was one serve and volley point out
:21:37. > :21:37.of 38. Let's see if the stat man trading in the basement decides
:21:38. > :21:47.that. -- hiding. You got your wish, John, it has gone
:21:48. > :22:09.through! He puts so much anger on the
:22:10. > :22:10.defensive crosscourt forehand that he leaves his opponent with no
:22:11. > :22:33.choice. Shouldn't he put it crosscourt?
:22:34. > :22:52.Goffin? Yes, give him another shot instead of just giving it to him?
:22:53. > :22:59.Great conditions, not too hot but it is warm, no wind, and Murray is on
:23:00. > :23:24.it. Just unable to find Goffin's side of
:23:25. > :24:17.the court. The Belgian serve is under siege once again.
:24:18. > :24:32.Hard work for Goffin but it paid off.
:24:33. > :24:44.Almost one hour gone, Andy Murray within touching distance of a 2-0
:24:45. > :24:57.lead, as we are in touching distance of London. I would be hard pushed to
:24:58. > :25:11.name them all. There is the London Eye, you can do better than that,
:25:12. > :25:26.Tim. Battersea Power Station? Just put up on the board that Fernando
:25:27. > :25:38.Verdasco went down, disappointing for him. The balls are little
:25:39. > :25:40.heavier, this is Goffin's best shot at getting back in this match right
:25:41. > :26:17.now. Extremely disappointing. He has got
:26:18. > :26:42.to be with that forehand up the line. He has missed way too many.
:26:43. > :26:52.Absolutely delightful from Goffin. You just saw his best shot, that is
:26:53. > :26:56.where Murray is scrambling to deal with that two-handed backhand. We
:26:57. > :27:10.saw him a couple of years ago, an excellent feel for the ball.
:27:11. > :27:19.He has got to be more aggressive like that and take it on at an
:27:20. > :27:26.angle, not let it sort of pull him off the court and reach for it. For
:27:27. > :28:01.him it is such lazy footwork, for a guy that moves that well.
:28:02. > :28:09.We talk about the playing styles and surfaces, it seems that nowadays
:28:10. > :28:14.when a player is not playing so well there really isn't a plan B, it is
:28:15. > :28:53.whether they can do plan A better. I think the
:28:54. > :29:05.6-1, 5-3 down. He could use a little sympathy right now. Please, show me
:29:06. > :29:11.some love! Murray is going to look to get the break right here so he
:29:12. > :29:20.can start serving some new balls in the third. Probably only a four out
:29:21. > :29:22.of ten for that dive, wasn't it? It looked like one of these football
:29:23. > :30:30.falls. JOHN MCENROE: He has the skills at
:30:31. > :30:32.the net. That sliced backhand he has to put more on that. That will help
:30:33. > :31:14.him, too. I thought he was going to scissor
:31:15. > :32:01.kick like Pete Sampras. TIM HENMAN: Do you reckon he was
:32:02. > :32:43.impressed with his hang time?! MARK PETCHEY: John, if you were
:32:44. > :32:48.allowed to get down on the court with Goffin right now, what would
:32:49. > :32:53.you look to do? It is a tough call. A lot of this is in his head. He is
:32:54. > :32:57.playing a better player. There are some major problems. Tim is correct,
:32:58. > :33:03.if he does get a look at his second serve, he has to make something
:33:04. > :33:10.happen. I just think that it is too often the case - my favourite thing
:33:11. > :33:15.that I tell kids at my tennis academy, make sure you don't beat
:33:16. > :33:19.yourself. It feels like at the end of the day, Murray puts him in
:33:20. > :33:27.positions to dare him to do too much and he's done that too often. If he
:33:28. > :33:32.could just allow himself to sort of play under that guise, perhaps
:33:33. > :33:37.Murray possibly could tighten up. That is the only thing you can hope.
:33:38. > :33:42.It is a tough predicament as well. You have to be aggressive, you have
:33:43. > :33:45.to take the ball on, you have to flatten out the backhand down the
:33:46. > :33:49.line. That is more of a high-risk strategy. He is not going to beat
:33:50. > :33:54.Murray by keeping the ball in the court. When he takes shots on he
:33:55. > :33:57.makes unforced errors and you say to him don't miss. That is why he is
:33:58. > :34:13.ranked 104 in the world. There's a perfect example of beating
:34:14. > :34:20.yourself. Absolutely no reason for that. Especially when you are a set
:34:21. > :34:23.and 5-4 down. He didn't miss the ball because he slipped. He slipped
:34:24. > :34:43.AFTER he missed it. I hate to beat a dead horse -
:34:44. > :34:47.there's another point where he's quick, use your quickness to your
:34:48. > :34:48.advantage. He should have been volleying that away. I don't care
:34:49. > :34:57.that he doesn't go to net much. Four points won out of 32 for
:34:58. > :35:29.Goffin. I think we could say that is the
:35:30. > :36:12.right tactic but poor execution. SUE BARKER: Tremendous start from
:36:13. > :36:17.the defending champion. We will be right back on Centre for the start
:36:18. > :36:21.of the third. On Court 1, this is a match you can watch on BBC Two,
:36:22. > :36:27.Victoria Azarenka, the eighth seed, is serving to stay in the second set
:36:28. > :36:31.against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Azarenka has only had two matches
:36:32. > :36:34.since January because of a foot injury and didn't play here last
:36:35. > :36:39.year. Hoping to turn that around. That is over on BBC Two.
:36:40. > :36:44.Other results to bring you. Disappointing news for British
:36:45. > :36:50.tennis here. Johanna Konta, a match we were following on BBC Two, has
:36:51. > :37:02.gone out but she lost to the very experienced Shuai Peng of China, 6-4
:37:03. > :37:10.in the final set. 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 the score on Court 12.
:37:11. > :37:15.A big shock - Fernando Verdasco, the man who led Andy Murray two sets to
:37:16. > :37:22.love last year in the Championships, he's gone out to Marinko Matosevic
:37:23. > :37:30.of Australia. He's been in form on the grass. The outspoken Aussie is
:37:31. > :37:38.celebrating out on Court 8. He is a dangerous one to go forward. Kimiko
:37:39. > :37:52.Date-Krumm of Japan is also out, she was beaten by Ekaterina Makarova 7-5
:37:53. > :37:55.in the third set. Also, these are the matches on the
:37:56. > :38:00.red button and on BBC Two. Tomas Berdych is two sets to one up
:38:01. > :38:29.in his match against Victor Hanescu. TIM HENMAN: He needs 71 more of
:38:30. > :38:42.those, John! JOHN MCENROE: I would change gears
:38:43. > :38:47.dramatically here! MARK PETCHEY: That wasn't one of his
:38:48. > :39:06.fastest, just 102. Again, a chance to move forward.
:39:07. > :39:40.Instead, he backed off. And put himself in a defensive position.
:39:41. > :40:05.Now Goffin is a little fatigued at 15-30. Already breathing hard.
:40:06. > :40:28.Staying on the theme of volleying, I was asked a question the other day -
:40:29. > :40:34.who is the best was asked a question the other day -
:40:35. > :40:39.100 of the singles in the men's? Who did you say? My pick? Rafael Nadal.
:40:40. > :41:21.He volleys alright. Murray not doing anything too
:41:22. > :41:24.elaborate out here. Goffin is the one that is trying to conjure up
:41:25. > :42:32.something. UMPIRE: Stop! Mr Murray is
:42:33. > :42:42.challenging the call on the baseline. The ball was called in.
:42:43. > :43:07.JOHN MCENROE: The chalk doesn't fly up anymore because it is titanium
:43:08. > :43:20.pigment or something. Andy Murray thought it was long. Is it much more
:43:21. > :43:25.fun with chalk or with Hawk-Eye? It was much more fun with chalk and no
:43:26. > :43:28.Hawk-Eye! You were never wrong with Hawk-Eye? I would have been proved
:43:29. > :43:35.wrong often had I been playing now. That was a good effort by Goffin to
:43:36. > :44:23.hold there. MARK PETCHEY: Therein lies the
:44:24. > :44:27.problem for Goffin. When he does build a point and go long with
:44:28. > :44:28.Murray, he doesn't seem to make any progress and Murray dominates
:44:29. > :44:48.proceedings. CROWD: Come on, Andy!
:44:49. > :44:52.TIM HENMAN: Goffin plays his forehand with a lot more spin. In
:44:53. > :44:57.these conditions, it is not going through the court.
:44:58. > :45:08.That went through the court! I often wonder why I don't see any player,
:45:09. > :45:12.especially the top players, don't do more of that when they are up 30-0
:45:13. > :45:36.to serve-volley. Murray has been to the net eight
:45:37. > :45:37.times. Six out of eight Goffin. Doesn't seem like he's been up there
:45:38. > :45:42.that much. They must have included the
:45:43. > :47:11.warm-up(!) MARK PETCHEY: Great example from
:47:12. > :47:26.Murray of not overcommitting himself.
:47:27. > :48:06.JOHN MCENROE: Excellent variety, keeping Goffin off balance. His
:48:07. > :48:10.sliced backhand is far superior to Goffin's. He doesn't know what to do
:48:11. > :48:15.with it, Goffin. TIM HENMAN: When Murray was up 30-0,
:48:16. > :48:17.he went on to race through. Goffin is back to 30-30.
:48:18. > :48:23.UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenging the call on the right far side line. The
:48:24. > :48:25.ball was called in. MARK PETCHEY: I think he broke a
:48:26. > :48:42.string on the return anyway. TIM HENMAN: In actual fact,
:48:43. > :48:50.shouldn't he get first serve because he broke a string? Goffin? He is
:48:51. > :48:57.getting a first serve. That is unreal. Can you change that rule? I
:48:58. > :49:00.want to change a few rules. If you break your string, you should
:49:01. > :49:05.want to change a few rules. If you get a second. Agreed! You have to
:49:06. > :49:07.wait for the challenge, right? What's another couple of seconds? It
:49:08. > :49:21.is first. UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenges the
:49:22. > :49:27.call on the right far side line. The ball was called in. Checking for the
:49:28. > :49:30.titanium pigment on the ball, which he has seen.
:49:31. > :49:47.Mr Murray has one challenge remaining.
:49:48. > :50:06.A simple put-away for Goffin. It's been anything but simple for the
:50:07. > :50:13.Belgian today. Not an awful lot for his camp to get excited about.
:50:14. > :50:18.Leading so far in the third set. Did you notice how quickly he was able
:50:19. > :50:24.to move to the net, though? That is the type of speed work players don't
:50:25. > :50:28.practise enough. They work quite a bit on side to side, maybe towards
:50:29. > :50:31.the service line. That is where your confidence would grow if you were
:50:32. > :50:36.able to take balls on before a guy had a chance to set himself up. That
:50:37. > :50:41.is where Goffin will become a better player, if he is able to sort of get
:50:42. > :50:51.his confidence back and get his ranking back. It will be because of
:50:52. > :50:54.that very reason. The way that Nishikori used his speed, he has to
:50:55. > :51:15.do that. Look how tall Shaq is. He Nishikori used his speed, he has to
:51:16. > :51:18.is a 7ft 1in I believe. You are not talking about Andy's
:51:19. > :51:23.is a 7ft 1in I believe. You are not there, are you? Sorry, you are in
:51:24. > :51:27.great shape, too! His wife wasn't in such great shape last year. She was
:51:28. > :51:32.recovering after such great shape last year. She was
:51:33. > :51:33.they couldn't travel to Andy's finest hour, but they are here
:51:34. > :51:59.today. That was one of Goffin's great
:52:00. > :52:13.successes today - getting the opening point on Murray's serve.
:52:14. > :53:04.Goffin is looking dangerous for the first time today. Much better. The
:53:05. > :53:09.slice is starting to work for him, too. A good little run. First time
:53:10. > :53:34.he's been ahead on the score as well.
:53:35. > :53:48.I would have loved to have seen him challenge Murray there and move
:53:49. > :54:23.forward, forcing him to hit a tough passing shot at 0-30.
:54:24. > :54:36.Murray less than perfect with the approach shot. Goffin - perfection
:54:37. > :54:56.personified with the pass. A bit of a shift, perhaps, coming
:54:57. > :55:20.here. A couple of break-points for Goffin.
:55:21. > :55:27.That is like doing all of your studying, acing a test, but to get
:55:28. > :55:30.the A you have to sign it - and he forgot! He's got to make that shot,
:55:31. > :55:48.the easiest shot of the rally. A positive way to save the second
:55:49. > :56:41.break-point. UMPIRE: Mr Goffin challenging the
:56:42. > :56:47.call on the left baseline. The ball was called out.
:56:48. > :56:51.MARK PETCHEY: Did you think this was even close?
:56:52. > :57:03.UMPIRE: The call stands. Advantage, Murray.
:57:04. > :57:07.MARK PETCHEY: He's done pretty well given he's got no sense of where the
:57:08. > :57:28.baseline is! JOHN MCENROE: It is going to be
:57:29. > :57:49.tough for him to hold after blowing that last game.
:57:50. > :58:08.He slipped a little bit. footing just long enough - that
:58:09. > :58:54.first step right there, point over. Just flexing his
:58:55. > :00:15.the first point of the game. Such a flat, pure hit on the
:00:16. > :00:16.backhand. Last year it was amazing to watch the difference between
:00:17. > :00:20.Novak backhand. Last year it was amazing
:00:21. > :00:24.to watch the difference Djokovic's backhand and Andy Murray's backhand.
:00:25. > :00:50.Andy's stays so low in comparison. Wow, where did that come from? What
:00:51. > :00:58.about that shot! I think his eyes were open, I'm not sure. At least it
:00:59. > :01:11.brought a smile to his face. You know what he is saying, was that
:01:12. > :01:22.really in? How many more times will he hit that shot before he makes it?
:01:23. > :01:35.Perhaps never. This is actually, for him, a big point because this would
:01:36. > :01:39.have been deuce, Murray would be back in the game and it would be
:01:40. > :01:44.have been deuce, Murray would be over in ten minutes. But when you
:01:45. > :01:50.are trying to figure a way to beat anybody, it makes that shot more
:01:51. > :01:56.important. It brings a big smile to his face. Maybe he can start to find
:01:57. > :02:01.some confidence again, and hopefully... Because he is an
:02:02. > :02:07.interesting player to watch. So it would be nice to see him figure out
:02:08. > :02:16.a way to get himself at least into the top 50. He has lost six Grand
:02:17. > :02:25.Slams in the opening round, but to be fair he has had some tough
:02:26. > :02:30.draws. Tomas Berdych, Jo Wilfried Tsonga... Come on, they are bad
:02:31. > :03:36.draws. And now Murray! It is happening far too often that
:03:37. > :03:42.Goffin has lost Murray's serve rather quickly, as he is about to do
:03:43. > :04:03.here. The pressure is right back on him.
:04:04. > :04:12.You are right, it is the other way to put pressure on your opponent, on
:04:13. > :04:36.their serve, either return great or hold your serve comfortably.
:04:37. > :04:52.He has been befuddled by that slice all match long. You sense that he
:04:53. > :04:58.needs to do a little bit more with it, respected and hit it back the
:04:59. > :05:03.same way to Murray. Murray has made a bit of a change to his racket, he
:05:04. > :05:08.likes to do that through the course of the season. On a quicker court
:05:09. > :05:18.like this he likes to have a smaller grip, on the clay he builds it up a
:05:19. > :05:22.bit, and in Miami he was playing with a 16th, 19 string pattern, but
:05:23. > :05:29.it has gone back to the racket he used to play with in 2008, with an
:05:30. > :05:39.18-20 string pattern that gives him some control that he feels he had
:05:40. > :05:41.lost for some reason. Shouldn't he used the racket the same way that he
:05:42. > :06:51.used last year? He has started muttering to himself
:06:52. > :07:03.down that end of the court. That is good.
:07:04. > :07:11.That is what everyone has been calling on him to do, more serve and
:07:12. > :07:17.volleys. He has struggled to get himself into the net because Andy's
:07:18. > :07:22.shots have been particularly deep, especially on the left-hand side
:07:23. > :07:28.where he has managed to keep the ball in the last third of the court
:07:29. > :07:34.44% of the time. He has split the attack up pretty well, as you would
:07:35. > :07:38.expect. That is all the more reason that Goffin should be thinking of
:07:39. > :07:43.ways to move forward because it is difficult for him to dictate play
:07:44. > :07:49.from the baseline. If you difficult for him to dictate play
:07:50. > :07:53.type of serve that you want, you are in control. There has been moments
:07:54. > :07:58.when you see him at the net like in the last point when he came in, he
:07:59. > :08:03.has the capabilities to volley adequately, better than adequately,
:08:04. > :08:07.but it is one of those scenarios that they don't practice it so if
:08:08. > :08:11.they miss a couple of balls they immediately lose all their
:08:12. > :08:19.confidence and don't want to go back there. With the hands he has shown,
:08:20. > :09:57.the feel for the game, he could be a very good volleyer.
:09:58. > :10:24.Eventually they take their toll. Goffin, to his credit, walked out
:10:25. > :10:26.Eventually they take their toll. overwhelmed, trying to figure out
:10:27. > :10:30.what he could do and he has tried some different things. He doesn't
:10:31. > :10:36.have a lot of options but he has played well, better in this last
:10:37. > :10:43.couple of sets. It would be nice if he could get rewarded in some way
:10:44. > :11:00.for his efforts, at least get this to a tie-break. Look at that! The
:11:01. > :11:09.drinks are on me tonight, boys! Serve and volley, the first one of
:11:10. > :11:19.the year. It was worth the wait as well.
:11:20. > :11:27.You had better know what you are up against. If you just got some new
:11:28. > :11:46.balls, that shot is going to be that much harder. The ball is going to be
:11:47. > :11:56.That is an incredible recovery he made. I don't know how he got that
:11:57. > :12:03.return. That is the last point of the rally, I would sure like to know
:12:04. > :12:04.how he got himself in the point. I bet Murray wishes he had moved
:12:05. > :12:37.forward. Goffin thought the serve was out.
:12:38. > :12:47.You cannot challenge your own serve, or can you? It is a good
:12:48. > :12:50.question, can you or not? We should check the rules. Possibly you can.
:12:51. > :13:08.Another one to add to the list! He is still thinking about the 45
:13:09. > :13:51.point. He took his time. He got the right
:13:52. > :13:52.spot in the end. He took up a pretty deep position and a good position it
:13:53. > :15:20.seemed. Just looking up at the sky. He has had to take more of a chance
:15:21. > :15:54.on the second. He has put more on and that has helped him.
:15:55. > :16:08.Delight on one side of the court, and disappointment etched on
:16:09. > :16:15.Murray's face. A valiant efforts here in the third set from Goffin,
:16:16. > :16:23.making a real fight of it and putting more pressure on Murray. He
:16:24. > :16:27.is yet to drop serve, but if he did the third set would loom large.
:16:28. > :16:34.There was a debate at the start of this tournament, I saw you with
:16:35. > :16:42.Andy's mum on Henman Hill, Murray Mound, was even a debate? Somebody
:16:43. > :16:56.brought up the conversation and Judy was honest enough to say you cannot
:16:57. > :17:00.change the name now. There is Judy. Another shot of number one Court,
:17:01. > :17:09.which will also be getting one of these beautiful roofs some years
:17:10. > :17:20.from now. 2019, there will be continuous play no matter what the
:17:21. > :17:22.weather is. There is the man behind many of the plan is happening here
:17:23. > :17:46.at the All-England Club. The good news for Murray is that he
:17:47. > :17:51.is certainly making Goffin work for it. So if he were for some reason
:17:52. > :17:55.not to win this set, I cannot imagine Goffin could keep this
:17:56. > :18:04.effort up for another couple of hours. And it may even pay off in
:18:05. > :18:52.the next few minutes. There is another quick hold. Once
:18:53. > :19:02.again, so how much longer can Goffin survive this?
:19:03. > :20:13.She doesn't look an duly stressed. -- unduly.
:20:14. > :20:23.For the last hour he hasn't been playing like a guy at 107 in the
:20:24. > :20:24.world. He has really picked it up and given Murray something to think
:20:25. > :21:24.about here. Not a lot of Goffin, but what there
:21:25. > :21:26.is a free winter that one. He could use another unforced error to add
:21:27. > :21:54.into the tally. Now he finds himself in a precarious
:21:55. > :22:01.situation. Seemed like he thought he had this game in the bag, up 40-0.
:22:02. > :22:38.You cannot afford to take your foot off the gas at 2-0 down.
:22:39. > :22:47.If he did think he had it in the bag, Murray will look like a thief
:22:48. > :22:57.if he takes it out of An outstanding return of serve, and
:22:58. > :23:17.it He has been
:23:18. > :23:27.entire set. Murray's service He has been
:23:28. > :23:31.moving along rapidly, having to dig deeper and deeper. Then he relaxed
:23:32. > :23:38.at 40-0. deeper and deeper. Then he relaxed
:23:39. > :23:42.shot, it wasn't bad actually, a lot of guys wouldn't have gone for it,
:23:43. > :23:48.but the carelessness and then a double faults, and suddenly it is
:23:49. > :23:54.just about over. That is what the great players do to you. You never
:23:55. > :24:00.feel like you can relax, and if you do, something bad almost always
:24:01. > :24:07.happens. Let's see if he will learn something from this type of match.
:24:08. > :24:12.Will he feel better about himself or have the effect of more of the same?
:24:13. > :24:14.He has played pretty well but he doesn't have an awful lot to show
:24:15. > :24:30.for it. One thing is for sure, Murray will
:24:31. > :24:34.not be relaxing here. He wants to put this match to bed. Serving for
:24:35. > :25:34.it. Neither player using the traditional
:25:35. > :27:22.form of volley. Goffin executing better there in this game.
:27:23. > :27:51.Goffin running out of breath and running out of time now as well.
:27:52. > :28:02.Match point. What a perfect start to the defence of his title here. He
:28:03. > :28:09.got a stern test in the third set, after overwhelming the diminutive
:28:10. > :28:20.Belgian in the first couple. Murray moves through swiftly into the
:28:21. > :28:27.second round. I thought he looked great, he was solid as a rock. I
:28:28. > :28:31.think I enjoy pretty much every minute of that. Goffin for his part
:28:32. > :28:37.put up the good fight, especially the last couple of sets, but just
:28:38. > :28:38.not the same league. I hope he can learn from the good
:28:39. > :28:42.the last couple of sets, but just not the same league. I hope he parts
:28:43. > :28:54.of this as he gets a pretty nice round of applause leaving, gets
:28:55. > :28:58.himself back in the mix. It is always a special occasion for any
:28:59. > :29:02.tennis player to come out on Centre Court at Wimbledon, and almost four
:29:03. > :29:02.David Goffin against the defending champion as well,
:29:03. > :29:08.David Goffin against the defending champion but he was a man who came
:29:09. > :29:10.out here and got to savour the moment that very few players do,
:29:11. > :29:49.very few champions do. that sealed it. Goffin was unable to
:29:50. > :29:57.make any real impression on the serve throughout the contest.
:29:58. > :30:05.Murray's girlfriend absolutely delighted. And the people who have
:30:06. > :30:08.been managing his back. There was very little sign of any physical
:30:09. > :30:18.problems out there for Murray today. It follows that back operation in
:30:19. > :30:28.September of last year. And that is about as big smile as you will get
:30:29. > :31:02.to see until he gets to win thing again.
:31:03. > :31:14.He dominated in every category, and he is going to share his thoughts
:31:15. > :31:22.with Garry Richardson now. Many congratulations, an excellent and
:31:23. > :31:36.pleasing performance for you? Yes, I thought it was a very high standard.
:31:37. > :31:42.To win in three, confidence wise, fantastic for you? Yes, sometimes
:31:43. > :31:47.you can win in three sets and not play well, it can be scrappy. But in
:31:48. > :31:49.terms of the way I struck the ball today, it was a good start. What was
:31:50. > :31:51.it like to go out on Centre Court as the defending champion? It was nice
:31:52. > :31:52.just I was nervous this morning, I was nervous yesterday, and walking
:31:53. > :31:54.to the court, it brings back a lot of good memories, and obviously, it
:31:55. > :31:59.is nice to walk out to a full crowd for the first match. I got a nice
:32:00. > :32:06.and then once you sit down in the chair, it is time to get ready for
:32:07. > :32:12.this year and move on from last year and try and play my best. It brought
:32:13. > :32:15.back memories, which memory, match point, anyone in
:32:16. > :32:17.back memories, which memory, match Obviously, last year
:32:18. > :32:22.back memories, which memory, match memory I have had, but I have had
:32:23. > :32:24.back memories, which memory, match lot of tough moments on that court
:32:25. > :32:28.as well just so there are a Obviously, last year was the best
:32:29. > :32:33.memory I have had, but I lot of things I think about when I am on my
:32:34. > :32:33.way to the court. Obviously, I played the
:32:34. > :32:34.lot of tough moments on that court Olympics here as well. Many close
:32:35. > :32:35.matches here, I have lost semifinals and finals as well, but obviously,
:32:36. > :32:41.winning last year is the best memory! Many congratulations.
:32:42. > :32:47.SUE BARKER: He often comes here from his home, just about half an hour
:32:48. > :32:50.away, he loves just being on Centre Court in the peace and quiet,
:32:51. > :32:59.remembering everything that happened last year. A comfortable winner
:33:00. > :33:05.today. Just over two hours. So, that is it, Murray is through. Let's get
:33:06. > :33:14.some more reaction from our commentators, Mac, Tim and Mark.
:33:15. > :33:22.First of all, Mac, we wanted him to have a decent win Was He Aggressive
:33:23. > :33:28.Enough For You? I Thought He Did Great. He Had An Opponent Who Was
:33:29. > :33:32.Not As Confident As He Would Have Liked To Have Been. He Took
:33:33. > :33:33.Advantage Of That In The First Set but we hope that David Goffin will
:33:34. > :33:38.become a really good player once again. But there was nothing he
:33:39. > :33:43.could really do to hurt Andy. So there was comfort in that. And then
:33:44. > :33:47.Andy was always playing well. Will he needs to be more aggressive down
:33:48. > :33:48.the road, against a tougher opponent?
:33:49. > :33:56.did exactly what he needed to do today, but he looked very sharp.
:33:57. > :33:58.Him, he was talking about Centre Court, which you love as well
:33:59. > :34:03.yourself, how much of an Court, which you love as well
:34:04. > :34:08.is that? Definitely. The experience he has gained throughout his career,
:34:09. > :34:16.backed up by what happened last year, I think it is a big advantage.
:34:17. > :34:20.Goffin has only won three matches on the tour this year. Andy mentioned
:34:21. > :34:24.he was nervous this morning, and yesterday, and he would have been
:34:25. > :34:29.keen to get under way. He played fantastically well, he looked like
:34:30. > :34:34.he was timing the ball well. It is always a little bit slippery out
:34:35. > :34:38.here, but he moved well. In terms of an opening performance, it was ten
:34:39. > :34:45.out of ten for him. Mark, you know him well, this was a nice match for
:34:46. > :34:51.him to get out of the way, because his opponent could not really hurt
:34:52. > :34:52.him that much? Yes, and with the Amelie Mauresmo situation,
:34:53. > :34:57.him that much? Yes, and with the important for him to come out and
:34:58. > :35:04.put a marker down, so that people do not start bringing that up. I think
:35:05. > :35:11.from Andy's point of view, he will be delighted. Is always his own
:35:12. > :35:14.harshest critic, and I think even he will find it difficult to find fault
:35:15. > :35:20.with that performance today. Let's look ahead, because we like to do
:35:21. > :35:33.that, and his possible opponent in the next round?!
:35:34. > :35:36.JOHN MCENROE: It sounds on paper like a pretty good draw. Anybody
:35:37. > :35:41.that winds round at Wimbledon deserves respect.
:35:42. > :35:46.SUE BARKER: Absolutely. He lost to James Ward at Queen's, and he also
:35:47. > :35:52.lost to James Ward in Paris. If that is true, then I am leaning even more
:35:53. > :35:58.heavily than I already was in favour of Mr Andy Murray. Dangerously
:35:59. > :36:04.looking forward through the tournament, it is not a bad draw
:36:05. > :36:09.that he has got? It is a very, very good draw. It is hard to envision a
:36:10. > :36:14.scenario in my opinion, with all respect to the other players, but at
:36:15. > :36:19.the very least, he is not in the quarters. And that is when things
:36:20. > :36:23.start to get tougher and tougher. And there is a guy who I believe has
:36:24. > :36:28.the potential to win Grand Slams soon in that section of the draw.
:36:29. > :36:33.But I think any of us would be hard pressed to make a case for anyone
:36:34. > :36:37.besides one of the top for winning it. As we look at potential
:36:38. > :36:43.opponents, Tim Henman, which is always dangerous to do, as we know,
:36:44. > :36:44.and a lot of seeded layers have already gone out, but just have a
:36:45. > :36:49.look at that. already gone out, but just have a
:36:50. > :36:54.look at that. I have got a feeling, in the quarterfinal, there could be
:36:55. > :36:57.Dimitrov in the quarterfinals? That's right. When you look at the
:36:58. > :37:01.grass court pedigree of his potential first four opponents,
:37:02. > :37:07.there is not too much to fear. But you do not take anything for
:37:08. > :37:10.granted. I think David Ferrer has played some good tennis on grass, I
:37:11. > :37:15.remember him playing Andy out here, and it was a tough match. But I
:37:16. > :37:19.think Andy will be happy with the draw, and happy with his performance
:37:20. > :37:26.today, which gives him the to build on. And I am sure he will be
:37:27. > :37:31.delighted that on day one, we have had him beating Rafa Nadal in the
:37:32. > :37:36.final! Thank you very much, guys. So, Andy Murray is safely through.
:37:37. > :37:39.We will be heading to see Grigor Dimitrov in a moment. First, a look
:37:40. > :37:44.at what has been happening elsewhere. There have been a number
:37:45. > :37:52.of shocks, but not on Court Number two, where sixth seed Tomas Berdych
:37:53. > :37:53.is through, despite dropping a set. He could meet Bernard Tomic in the
:37:54. > :38:04.next round. And disappointment for James Ward of
:38:05. > :38:08.Great Britain. He only won five games against Mikhail Youzhny, but
:38:09. > :38:18.he is a proven performer on the grass.
:38:19. > :38:23.And Victoria Azarenka came through, it will save straight sets, but she
:38:24. > :38:31.was a break of serve down in that second set against the very
:38:32. > :38:36.experienced Lucic-Baroni, a former semifinalist here from the 1990s.
:38:37. > :38:45.Azarenka, who has been recovering from a foot injury, is through.
:38:46. > :38:52.She will be pleased to get that one under her belt. So, Murray is
:38:53. > :38:53.through on Centre Court. We spoke about a possible quarterfinal with a
:38:54. > :39:22.certain man who won at Queen's. # Who do you think you are?
:39:23. > :39:28.# You are never going to break my heart.
:39:29. > :39:33.He was the king of Queen's, and we will be seeing him in action on
:39:34. > :39:37.Court Number one in a moment. Let's just take you around the grounds to
:39:38. > :39:44.see what is happening. Venus Williams, seeded number 30 at these
:39:45. > :40:02.Championships, out on Court Number three. Over on 18, Dan Cox of Great
:40:03. > :40:10.Britain is two sets down. We will keep you up-to-date with how those
:40:11. > :40:14.matches proceed. Grigor Dimitrov has been tipped as the next big champion
:40:15. > :40:18.for so long and he is beginning to make his breakthrough this year. Up
:40:19. > :40:27.against a qualifier from the United States, Ryan Harrison.
:40:28. > :40:40.ANDREW CASTLE: A fascinating matchup for the first round.
:40:41. > :40:42.Dimitrov, probably one of six, seven or eight men that you can probably
:40:43. > :41:32.see winning this Championship. The service has been dominant in
:41:33. > :41:33.this match so far. It has not been lacking in interest cause of it,
:41:34. > :42:03.though. PETER FLEMING: If he continues to
:42:04. > :42:10.make this high percentage of first serves, there is not much a draft
:42:11. > :42:20.can do about it. Well, that was an impressive serve-volley combination.
:42:21. > :42:27.It is not what we will see from Harrison Time after time, but if he
:42:28. > :42:41.could become adept at that, it would be a nice addition.
:42:42. > :42:51.That is well held from Ryan Harrison. He has not come out here
:42:52. > :42:54.with any sense of fear or trepidation, by the looks of things.
:42:55. > :43:03.He has come through three tough trepidation, by the looks of things.
:43:04. > :43:11.rounds of qualifying, and finds himself out here now, not easy. He
:43:12. > :43:32.is a better player than his ranking suggests.
:43:33. > :43:41.That is a terrific point. Harrison showing us the athletic ability this
:43:42. > :44:07.was a nice little shot. He knew that the drop volley was on the cards.
:44:08. > :44:12.him win a lot recently, obviously winning at Queen's Club. But this is
:44:13. > :45:45.getting to the money end of the set now.
:45:46. > :45:51.ANDREW CASTLE: Just 29 minutes played, no breaks of serve, no break
:45:52. > :45:54.points, but just one or two signs in the last couple of games that both
:45:55. > :46:00.players are beginning to tick up the serve, and getting their return into
:46:01. > :46:04.gear. I think just a little bit of tension now as we get towards the
:46:05. > :46:12.business end of the set. You chose to look at Ryan Harrison's athletic
:46:13. > :46:21.ability on that first point. But Dimitrov has a real talent they both
:46:22. > :46:29.do. Absolutely, Dimitrov has got a lot. And with each week, with each
:46:30. > :46:34.win, it appears as though he becomes more and more confident, and more
:46:35. > :46:43.and more creative. This guy, though, Ryan Harrison, is the one who could
:46:44. > :46:51.use some of that. He needs to win a few more matches, and relax a little
:46:52. > :47:01.bit into what he could become. As we have seen, an ability to hit shots
:47:02. > :47:03.is one thing he has got. He has got to hold serve once again to take
:47:04. > :47:28.this into a tie-break. Danger now for Harrison. These small
:47:29. > :47:31.moments, these little differences. First point of a game on a grass
:47:32. > :47:49.court seems bigger than the first point of the game on a clay court.
:47:50. > :47:59.Well played, Harrison! It really was. Nice approach shot, got it to
:48:00. > :48:02.skid through the quarter little bit. Harrison, at 6ft 2, and very
:48:03. > :48:40.athletic, not an easy guide to pass. That is one of the few times that
:48:41. > :48:52.Dimitrov has opted to hit over the backhand return today.
:48:53. > :48:53.UMPIRE: Correction, first service. That was unlucky, a perfect return
:48:54. > :49:37.of serve. Here is a threatening moment for
:49:38. > :49:42.Harrison. The weapon which Dimitrov likes to bring to bear is the
:49:43. > :49:43.forehand. And he worked his way into position to bring it into play on
:49:44. > :50:22.that point. That is well held! From 0-15, that
:50:23. > :50:28.sliced approach, 30-30, big ace, super play full exactly, clearly
:50:29. > :50:35.those wins in the call of occasions have really helped him. He showed
:50:36. > :50:43.some steel in that game. Tie-break to decide the first set.
:50:44. > :51:18.I thought he had been caught out by the bounce, but he just reached.
:51:19. > :51:23.PETER FLEMING: And perhaps, with the way Dimitrov has been serving, that
:51:24. > :52:50.many break might be enough. Only the fifth point against the
:52:51. > :52:53.Dimitrov serve, and it was a point Harrington had to win. Credit once
:52:54. > :53:45.again to his competitive instinct. Well, it looks like this tie-break
:53:46. > :53:50.is going to Dimitrov. At 5-1, he would be expected to win probably 99
:53:51. > :53:57.out of a hundred, from this point, on this surface. So, much will
:53:58. > :54:02.depend on how Ryan Harrison of the United States responds to this.
:54:03. > :54:07.Dimitrov has just upped his game little bit, right from his first
:54:08. > :54:31.return, on the second point of the tie-break.
:54:32. > :54:42.And that is wired as well. And this has gone south quickly for him. Yes,
:54:43. > :54:45.when you are serving in a game, the opponent has to win at least four
:54:46. > :55:04.points to get the break. In a tie-break, much less is required.
:55:05. > :55:12.First set to Grigor Dimitrov. A one-sided tie-break after a very
:55:13. > :55:18.even 12 games. He is off and running, just like he was at Queen's
:55:19. > :55:21.Club. It looks to me like he is going to be a threat at this
:55:22. > :55:28.tournament, even at this early stage. Fleming
:55:29. > :55:28.tournament, even at this early looks comfortable. Quite happy
:55:29. > :55:43.patrolling this grass court surface. Such a graceful athlete.
:55:44. > :55:51.ANDREW CASTLE: So, let's have a look at the first serves in. Points won
:55:52. > :55:56.on first serve, dominant from Dimitrov. When the ball was in play,
:55:57. > :56:08.Dimitrov marginally more likely to win the point. It was a good set. It
:56:09. > :56:20.was a very good set. In the end, Harrison just made a few too many
:56:21. > :56:23.errors off the ground. They talk about Grigor Dimitrov being one of
:56:24. > :56:30.the most marketable athletes in sport, it is an area, Peter, which
:56:31. > :56:36.values youth and potential for the future. His partnership with Maria
:56:37. > :56:39.Sharapova means that he is not just on the back pages, he is in the
:56:40. > :56:45.middle and on the front sometimes as well. It is certainly a glamorous
:56:46. > :56:52.partnership, is it's not? Yes, you can just watch the way he interacts
:56:53. > :56:58.with the fans, with the line judges, with other players, even. He is an
:56:59. > :57:07.electric personality, he seems to get on with everybody a Italian GQ
:57:08. > :57:15.have called him the most stylish player, I am sure he enjoyed that!
:57:16. > :57:21.Not all of it is positive, he got chased around in Acapulco, and some
:57:22. > :57:26.girls ripped his shirt off! When I asked him about it, he did not look
:57:27. > :57:30.like hated every moment of it! But I think it is all, is a bit of a
:57:31. > :57:33.shock, because he calls himself a country boy, rather than a city boy,
:57:34. > :57:39.although he gives off the glamorous vibe, that I think he quite likes a
:57:40. > :57:53.quiet life. But those days are gone for a while. And so now it is up to
:57:54. > :57:54.Ryan Harrison to recover from that first set tie-break, which got away
:57:55. > :58:12.from him quickly. Ryan Harrison has accepted what
:58:13. > :58:28.Grigor Dimitrov said. Clearly wide. UMPIRE: Mr Harrison has two
:58:29. > :58:43.challenges remaining. He is all nervous 23-year-old energy
:58:44. > :58:46.and positivity, isn't he? You can see a lot of Roger Rashid's work in
:58:47. > :59:19.him. It looked as though he mishit that
:59:20. > :00:15.ball a little bit. He comes from an athletic
:00:16. > :00:19.background, Ryan Harrison. His dad played for Oklahoma State, and
:00:20. > :00:26.grandad was a running back at Woolwich level. He has got a brother
:00:27. > :00:33.who they reckon is as talented as he is. -- at college level. You can
:00:34. > :00:48.see, Ryan has spent some time in the gym, a bit of a barrel chest there!
:00:49. > :01:14.We used to have fun with his dad Pat, the barrel belly!
:01:15. > :01:22.Griddle's dad is a tennis coach, his mum a sports teacher, and a former
:01:23. > :02:13.volleyball player. So that is an athletic background as well.
:02:14. > :03:00.Business as usual for both guys. On serve here to start the second.
:03:01. > :03:55.Any time your net, the goal is to keep the ball as
:03:56. > :04:14.low as possible. Dimitrov certainly accomplished that.
:04:15. > :04:38.No signs of break of serve, the first set was a very one-sided tie
:04:39. > :04:46.breaker, Dimitrov upping the pace. Talking earlier about the rackets
:04:47. > :04:52.these players are using, that is the old type of rackets that Pete
:04:53. > :04:58.Sampras used. 90 square inches. On that racket. It says something, I
:04:59. > :05:06.think it has a paint job, it is a very individual racket. Talking
:05:07. > :05:09.about going to 93, 95, maybe 98 square inches this summer when he
:05:10. > :05:14.experiments. It is a very personal thing, not much of a sweet spot on a
:05:15. > :05:18.small rackets like that. How do you decide what is the right racket for
:05:19. > :05:23.you if you are a club player? None of them well string the rackets as
:05:24. > :05:28.tightly, you wouldn't want to string your racket as tightly as these guys
:05:29. > :05:37.do. Because of the sweet spot? Yes, it makes the sweet spot smaller. It
:05:38. > :05:49.gives you less power. And how do you choose a frame? You asking me? Yes.
:05:50. > :05:51.gives you less power. And how do you It has two feel-good. It has two
:05:52. > :05:58.feel-good. If you can play test it, even better. - two feel-good.
:05:59. > :06:04.APPLAUSE You have two walk out of the shot
:06:05. > :07:02.though. Really pleased. My new artillery.
:07:03. > :07:14.APPLAUSE Dimitrov so confident with his serve
:07:15. > :07:22.I would say, more than anything. Because he is serving so well, I can
:07:23. > :07:23.go for whatever I like, if I make a few errors, it doesn't matter, I
:07:24. > :07:44.will bail myself out. APPLAUSE
:07:45. > :07:48.Oh yes. The final shot was the headline act but what made it
:07:49. > :07:53.possible was the undercard. It was the first one here, make your
:07:54. > :07:58.opponent play. Exactly, any time you get the ball on the ground, in that
:07:59. > :08:14.sort of situation, you have succeeded.
:08:15. > :08:26.APPLAUSE On par game Dimitrov.
:08:27. > :08:29.That was a missed opportunity, he wanted to force Dimitrov to play one
:08:30. > :09:11.more shot. Here comes another one. Technically speaking you might have
:09:12. > :09:16.wanted to change when the polls change, but almost no players change
:09:17. > :09:25.their rackets when they are about to serve. - the balls. Roger Federer
:09:26. > :09:26.changes before the balls are about to change. Most guys will change the
:09:27. > :09:46.game after. Dimitrov did there. APPLAUSE
:09:47. > :09:54.This is Harrison under pressure now. He has played well so far, he hasn't
:09:55. > :10:02.dropped his serve. It is a difficult ball to handle and he is facing zero
:10:03. > :10:04.-30 against an opponent who has given him a lot of difficulty up to
:10:05. > :10:20.this point. Just wide. This is an important
:10:21. > :10:26.moment in the match. If Harrison can get himself out of this game, it
:10:27. > :10:29.would be an enormous feather in his cap. I'm not sure I fancy his
:10:30. > :10:56.chances at this point. APPLAUSE
:10:57. > :11:06.Dimeck trough to good. - Dimeck was too good. Harrison has taking a body
:11:07. > :11:11.blow. Watch this. That is the natural balance you were talking
:11:12. > :11:18.about. Roger Rashid will have watched that game and his scorecard
:11:19. > :11:22.would have put ten out of ten. Could not have played a better return
:11:23. > :11:26.service game than Dimitrov did then. All four returns back into
:11:27. > :11:35.play. Forced Harrison to do something special. The American this
:11:36. > :11:43.time not up to the task. Now he is looking at a giant hill to climb. He
:11:44. > :11:50.will have to do what he hasn't done so far. Exactly, Dimitrov has served
:11:51. > :11:57.so well. Thus far. 67% first serves in play. He has been so dominant. He
:11:58. > :12:05.has only lost three points on his first serve. 25 of 28.
:12:06. > :12:12.Harrison started the year at 100 in the world, that means you get into
:12:13. > :12:16.the Grand Slams, you are one of the last guys into the Grand Slam which
:12:17. > :12:19.is a 100 in the world, that means you get into the Grand Slams, you
:12:20. > :12:22.are one of the last guys into the Grand Slam which is 140 is no good
:12:23. > :12:27.really, because you do not get into the slams. You have to try to
:12:28. > :12:36.qualify. Which he did this time, to his credit.
:12:37. > :12:47.140 will get you into almost no main tour events. It is challenging
:12:48. > :13:03.material. You don't want to hang around at that level for too long. -
:13:04. > :13:07.Challenger. Oh yes. APPLAUSE That is a goalkeeper going one way
:13:08. > :13:14.or another trying to save a penalty. He is waiting for that one, already
:13:15. > :13:17.swinging the racket. That was quick. He did well, guessing correctly, and
:13:18. > :13:45.timing be passing shot was no mean feat. - the passing shot.
:13:46. > :15:00.How about this? This is an impressive response from Harrison.
:15:01. > :15:11.APPLAUSE That was a point and a half from
:15:12. > :15:13.Dimitrov. The defensive shots he played early on in the rally were
:15:14. > :15:24.terrific. That was exquisite. The first piece of largess from
:15:25. > :17:00.Dimitrov today. themselves. - himself. He has done a
:17:01. > :17:05.lot right in this game. He got 20-40, played an exquisite point,
:17:06. > :17:07.but was undone by the drop shot from Dimitrov. Other than that, he's done
:17:08. > :17:42.nothing wrong. There she - he got two 0-40. What a
:17:43. > :17:45.game that is. What a game. That is a guy who is confident. He has won a
:17:46. > :17:52.lot of big matches. guy who is confident. He has won a
:17:53. > :18:01.matches. 0- 40 down, no problem, one at a time. After Andy Murray and
:18:02. > :18:05.walking out of the defending champion, this was the name I looked
:18:06. > :18:07.at today. I thought I would like to see him play. I hope others feel
:18:08. > :18:24.that way. When Chris commode the then
:18:25. > :18:34.tournament director, now executive chairman of the ATP Tour, when he
:18:35. > :18:40.gave a wildcard, two wildcards, to Dimitrov five or six years ago, he
:18:41. > :18:53.was criticised, which is ridiculous. - Chris Kermode. I guess Chris has
:18:54. > :19:00.had the last laugh in several different ways.
:19:01. > :19:08.A lot of people in this trawler that Harrison would beat on this form. -
:19:09. > :19:41.this draw. The task of winning this one is a
:19:42. > :19:42.lot more difficult now because Dimitrov seems to have another gear
:19:43. > :20:09.now that he can move to. We often see it, the first round or
:20:10. > :20:17.two, especially at Wimbledon, because of the grass. The top guys
:20:18. > :20:22.are nervous. If you can somehow English in front of them, and take
:20:23. > :20:29.advantage of that. - inch in front of them.
:20:30. > :20:43.APPLAUSE Dimitrov is in control of his game.
:20:44. > :20:47.It was a mistake from Harrison but credit to him, he did very well to
:20:48. > :20:53.keep this low. Where did Dimitrov appear from there? It was almost
:20:54. > :21:06.perfect. He should have got the second one back though. APPLAUSE
:21:07. > :21:29.On par the ball was called in. - UMPIRE:. Was it wide? That is good.
:21:30. > :21:36.I can rarely remember seeing two guys more comfortable on a grass
:21:37. > :21:39.court on day one. Last year the grass was moist, people were
:21:40. > :21:44.slipping and sliding. It was difficult over the first couple of
:21:45. > :21:49.rounds, you didn't want to turn the TV on. But these two are moving so
:21:50. > :21:55.well, great credit to this man, he is playing a superb match. He is
:21:56. > :21:59.being outplayed. He is, the court looks incredibly lush and it looks
:22:00. > :22:06.as though it might be slippery that it really hasn't been that bad. For
:22:07. > :22:11.both these guys who get around the court so well, they have made it
:22:12. > :22:18.look pretty routine. Dimitrov especially. I should say the winner
:22:19. > :22:23.of this match advances in a section that Andy Murray is in. Players
:22:24. > :22:29.never look at it the same way the press do. Witches, who are you
:22:30. > :22:34.playing the quarterfinal? - which is. Players play a point at a time
:22:35. > :22:38.and think of it in those terms. You will ask a player who you have in
:22:39. > :22:48.the second round and they don't know. But the winner of this match
:22:49. > :22:52.indie Andy Murray section, potential quarterfinal for Dimitrov. - in the.
:22:53. > :22:54.David Ferrer in that session as well.
:22:55. > :22:58.quarterfinal for Dimitrov. - in the. David Ferrer He has been in the
:22:59. > :23:51.quarterfinal in this year on a few occasions.
:23:52. > :23:53.like that one. With the returning player you have to capitalise in
:23:54. > :24:42.this situation. APPLAUSE UMPIRE: Game Dimitrov. APPLAUSE
:24:43. > :25:04.UMPIRE: Dimitrov leads 5-3, second set.
:25:05. > :25:10.Dimitrov almost secured the second break. His last return game, how he
:25:11. > :25:49.would love to do that right here. I wonder if he was thinking what
:25:50. > :25:55.would I wonder if he was thinking what
:25:56. > :26:50.my cheeky drop shots here? Yes. Dimitrov going through the gears
:26:51. > :26:57.playing with real intensity here in the first round. I'm extremely
:26:58. > :27:02.impressed. He has worn Harrison down from a mental perspective. Harrison
:27:03. > :27:11.has still hit the ball well. Towards the end of the second set he was
:27:12. > :27:13.really overrun. We will be back with Dimitrov 's match in a moment. On
:27:14. > :27:23.Centre Court short time Dimitrov 's match in a moment. On
:27:24. > :27:29.sets. An emphatic start, 6-1, 6-4, 6-5, he defeated David Goffin from
:27:30. > :27:33.Belgium. Next up the player from Slovenia. Two hours and two minutes
:27:34. > :27:40.on Centre Court and he has his sights on another title, but still a
:27:41. > :27:46.long way to go. Bernard Tour surfing at match point against the Russian.
:27:47. > :28:00.- Tomic. Next up he will at match point against the Russian.
:28:01. > :28:05.Berdych, the number six seed. The big server from South Africa Kevin
:28:06. > :28:13.Anderson is in Andy Murray 's quarter of the draw. He came through
:28:14. > :28:17.6-3, 6-5, 6-2. The Slovenian is hoping to be granted a British
:28:18. > :28:25.passport in time for the Davis Cup tie in March. Anderson is
:28:26. > :28:32.Later on we will see this man on court, Novak Djokovic, finalist last
:28:33. > :28:52.year, losing to Andy Murray. Third on Centre Court against, Golobev. We
:28:53. > :28:56.have Venus Williams, a setup, on serve in the second. Li Na has come
:28:57. > :29:01.back from a break down to take the opening set on Centre Court. Jeremy
:29:02. > :29:08.Chardy is up a break in the fourth set. You can follow them on the red
:29:09. > :29:14.button command line. Back we go to Court One. - online.
:29:15. > :29:21.COMMENTATOR: The chances of winning a point on that line so slim.
:29:22. > :29:57.APPLAUSE his aggressive shot, but it has led
:29:58. > :30:08.to errors far more often than he would have liked.
:30:09. > :30:17.That is an interesting play. Harrison opting to take the ball
:30:18. > :30:46.early and come in and test Dimitrov on the pass.
:30:47. > :30:54.took him all around the world. The ITF are to be congratulated for
:30:55. > :30:57.putting on so many small events which have no economic value, but
:30:58. > :31:04.contribute to the development of the game. The national associations,
:31:05. > :31:08.getting together under the ITF, putting on junior tournaments all
:31:09. > :31:13.around the world, and this young man was a Grand Slam junior champion at
:31:14. > :31:23.Wimbledon, and also at the US Open back in 2008.
:31:24. > :31:40.Just slightly overran that and played it between his legs... Lost
:31:41. > :32:20.the point! His coach, Roger Rashid, will be pulling his hair out!
:32:21. > :32:24.Once again over hitting the forehand. The tactic has promise, he
:32:25. > :32:43.just needs to execute it better. Ryan Harrison has not come out and
:32:44. > :32:44.done anything particularly wrong, apart from a couple of errors here
:32:45. > :32:50.and there. The second apart from a couple of errors here
:32:51. > :32:53.was finding his range on the return little bit. Number ten in the United
:32:54. > :33:12.States, Harrison. The people above him, not exactly
:33:13. > :33:14.household names. PETER FLEMING: No, we have got a lot
:33:15. > :34:00.of work to do. There were a lot of smiles on a lot
:34:01. > :34:03.of women's faces as we arrived in our commentary position, and it was
:34:04. > :34:30.not just for forehands like that. He has got what ever it is that
:34:31. > :34:57.counts as it. Watch this. And then there is another one...
:34:58. > :35:17.Yes, nicely played. It is this sort of innovation which Harrison has not
:35:18. > :35:34.played perhaps as much as he could. That could be the death knell for
:35:35. > :35:40.Harrison. The scoreboard has a horrible cemetery to it. --
:35:41. > :37:05.symmetry. To come through qualifying, Ryan
:37:06. > :37:20.Harrison had a great effort, especially in the final round.
:37:21. > :37:29.The person he but got to the fourth round in the main draw in 2010.
:37:30. > :37:46.Wow! Yes, well done, Harrison, but have you seen anything like this
:37:47. > :37:54.from Dimitrov? It is rare. Just how he connected with the ball. That is
:37:55. > :38:15.a squash shot, to even think about it...!
:38:16. > :38:33.UMPIRE: Mr Harrison is challenging the call, the ball was called in.
:38:34. > :38:54.UMPIRE: Game, Dimitrov. New balls, please.
:38:55. > :39:02.ANDREW CASTLE: So, two sets and three love up. He has got the ball
:39:03. > :39:05.on a string, hasn't he? He really does. I would
:39:06. > :39:08.on a string, hasn't he? He really most impressive is just his balance
:39:09. > :39:14.around the court. He gets most impressive is just his balance
:39:15. > :39:21.quickly, but slides into the shot so often. Almost never appears to lose
:39:22. > :39:32.his balance on this slick surface. Reminds you of Roger Federer. Baby
:39:33. > :39:40.Fed was what they said about him. Along the line from Roger Rasheed is
:39:41. > :39:44.Tony, who left the IMG stable to manage Roger. This fellow has been
:39:45. > :39:53.around a bit. I can only assume that he is managing Grigor Dimitrov now?
:39:54. > :39:59.Yes, you're right. And he has another prodigious talent to deal
:40:00. > :40:03.with. The similarities with Federer are obvious. Whether or not Dimitrov
:40:04. > :40:08.has got that killer streak to go ahead. And in this generation of
:40:09. > :40:12.great players as well. To go ahead and win one of these big ones. I
:40:13. > :40:14.think personally he does, but we will see. Certainly showing signs of
:40:15. > :40:27.it. He is probably 2-3 years away from
:40:28. > :42:31.being at his peak. This was a threatening draw for
:42:32. > :42:34.Grigor Dimitrov. Ryan Harrison, semifinalist at Eastbourne back in
:42:35. > :42:58.2012. Newport, a semifinalist as well, in Rhode Island.
:42:59. > :43:18.Terrific touch. Makes it look so easy. He is peaking
:43:19. > :43:20.too early, Peter. Not necessarily. No reason to say that he cannot keep
:43:21. > :44:14.this up for two weeks. PETER FLEMING: I tell you what, she
:44:15. > :45:08.has kept her cool! LINE JUDGE: Out.
:45:09. > :45:29.UMPIRE: Game, Dimitrov. I know she is not flinching, I just
:45:30. > :45:34.wonder whether she is actually seeing the ball coming, because it
:45:35. > :45:38.is such a quick motion, and it is getting there in about .6 of a
:45:39. > :45:44.second. She sees the funny side. She is making the calls, though, so
:45:45. > :45:59.clearly, she sees something right! Tuff Crawford Ryan Harrison, playing
:46:00. > :46:02.this man. -- tough draw. I see that Ryan has qualified in the men's
:46:03. > :46:07.doubles event here as well as the singles. So he put in a shift of
:46:08. > :46:13.work to get to the first round in the doubles as well as in the
:46:14. > :46:18.singles. He has had to qualify in that as well, so he has already made
:46:19. > :46:22.a significant contribution, and we are only halfway through day one at
:46:23. > :46:28.the Championships. What happened to American tennis, anyway? You have
:46:29. > :46:35.got about 20 seconds! PETER FLEMING: Dropped off a cliff.
:46:36. > :46:57.I guess everything goes in cycles, but we are not in a good one
:46:58. > :47:07.UMPIRE: Dimitrov is challenging the call, the ball was called out.
:47:08. > :47:55.Soccer and the rest! A lot of competition for these great
:47:56. > :48:08.athletes. At Ryan Harrison, here's great athlete as well. It is just a
:48:09. > :48:35.matter of belief, a lot of the time. She almost ducked into that one as
:48:36. > :48:49.well! I am getting slightly concerned for her.
:48:50. > :49:03.all the rest of it, when you eulogise about a player, people get
:49:04. > :49:04.the wrong end of the stick. But you can understand why people fall in
:49:05. > :49:12.the wrong end of the stick. But you love with this Guy's play. It has
:49:13. > :50:31.been a bit of a masterclass, you would have two say.
:50:32. > :50:32.just a little bit too much pace. Harrison did not have enough time to
:50:33. > :51:18.get back into court. This was a deft touch, but you would
:51:19. > :51:20.have to say, where was Harrison? The drop shot was always going to be the
:51:21. > :51:55.most dangerous option. PETER FLEMING: So, a mini
:51:56. > :52:05.opportunity for Harrison to get back into this third set.
:52:06. > :52:51.Oh, it has landed in. Just tipped down with the topspin.
:52:52. > :52:55.He is extremely flexible physically, rivalling Djokovic in that
:52:56. > :53:35.department. It is a must now. He has just been more accurate, more
:53:36. > :53:53.dominant, from the middle of the court, then Harrison has been.
:53:54. > :54:16.They went to live in Paris, he went there as a young man, used to enjoy
:54:17. > :54:20.getting out of the city, cycling around the lanes and everything
:54:21. > :54:29.else. Very much a country boy, Dimitrov. But is that what you have
:54:30. > :54:33.to be now, at 13, 14, 15, like Andy Murray, going to Spain at that age,
:54:34. > :54:37.is that what you have to do, you have to be on the road, giving up
:54:38. > :54:44.your education, in order to achieve? I do not know. I would like
:54:45. > :54:51.to think not. But the more we see the great champions, they are pros.
:54:52. > :54:58.Certainly by the time they are 16. It is a lot to give up, isn't it?
:54:59. > :55:05.Yes. Ryan Harrison, the American player here, his father, Pat
:55:06. > :55:09.Harrison, coached for John Newcombe in Texas, so he was always around
:55:10. > :55:16.the big tennis camps in the United States. He went pro without going to
:55:17. > :55:20.college. That was always extremely unusual. Nowadays, it seems to take
:55:21. > :57:04.longer. He just about had his hand out to
:57:05. > :57:13.shake hands, and he has missed it! He played virtually perfect point.
:57:14. > :57:20.He did. Again, well done Harrison for sticking around. And perhaps
:57:21. > :57:52.Dimitrov needed to just charge that only a little more.
:57:53. > :58:00.Oh, do you know what?! It is a magnificent performance, a really
:58:01. > :58:05.superb effort. Ryan Harrison played his part in that match, but what a
:58:06. > :58:10.first-round performance. If we do not see a lot of Grigor Dimitrov at
:58:11. > :58:16.these Championships, I think that would be a huge surprise. White
:58:17. > :58:21.brilliant at times. He served supremely well, his forehand was
:58:22. > :58:29.virtually flawless, and he finished so well from the forecourt. That was
:58:30. > :58:35.as good as we could have was be hoped for from Grigor Dimitrov. It
:58:36. > :58:39.is amazing to watch him move and play. And it has been amazing to
:58:40. > :58:45.watch in developed over the years. Ryan Harrison, for so long, the next
:58:46. > :58:50.great hope of American tennis, he is only 22, and he played his part
:58:51. > :58:55.today. But what are you to do against Grigor Dimitrov? He will now
:58:56. > :59:07.be with his partner, Maria Sharapova, and there is something
:59:08. > :59:11.different about this 23-year-old, and it is thrilling to watch. And
:59:12. > :59:23.the crowd wherever he goes adore it. Whether it is for his tennis,
:59:24. > :59:25.for the lifestyle...! Yes, and he has got a lot of time for his fans.
:59:26. > :59:33.He does, he was has got a lot of time for his fans.
:59:34. > :59:37.Club when he gave a racket out, he spoke to somebody in a wheelchair at
:59:38. > :59:39.the side of the court. So, tennis is lucky to have this kid, and we will
:59:40. > :59:49.see where he goes. Personally, lucky to have this kid, and we will
:59:50. > :59:52.think he can win the thing. Well, if that is any indication, if he can
:59:53. > :00:00.continue to play with that sort of form against increased opposition,
:00:01. > :00:06.continue to play with that sort of stronger opposition, then yes. He is
:00:07. > :00:11.on his way to a really good thing. A match that we were denied at Queen's
:00:12. > :00:16.Club when he had to pull out of the quarterfinal, Alexandr Dolgopolov
:00:17. > :00:19.against Dimitrov, two of the great young talents, that could happen
:00:20. > :00:24.here, and I think we would all love to see it. Potentially, Grigor
:00:25. > :00:30.Dimitrov, quarterfinal opponent for Andy Murray, and what a prospect
:00:31. > :00:34.that would be. It is a long, long way away, but it is one that I think
:00:35. > :00:54.we could afford to look forward to. the court, it brings back a lot of
:00:55. > :01:01.good memories. What a great day to be out on the grass. It is a great
:01:02. > :01:07.atmosphere. In terms of confidence a real boost.
:01:08. > :01:15.I think it Israeli important early on in the tournament to have - is
:01:16. > :01:19.really important. Not to over analyse, to play your game. It is
:01:20. > :01:24.important how you are going to start. I'm looking forward to the
:01:25. > :01:30.next round. Given what you've already achieved in London you had
:01:31. > :01:34.the perfect build-up at Queen's. It was great for me to win that title
:01:35. > :01:39.and it gives me a lot of confidence. That is in the past now, I
:01:40. > :01:43.appreciate that title. But now I'm competing at a high level. People
:01:44. > :01:53.have suggested this could be the moment you breakthrough. Are you
:01:54. > :01:57.close to breaking through big-time? Throughout all the years I've been
:01:58. > :02:04.playing quite decent tennis that recently my performance has been
:02:05. > :02:10.raised a little bit. I have a lot of matches under my belt, a bit more
:02:11. > :02:17.experience. I'm going to look for match by match. You are playing very
:02:18. > :02:25.well, congratulations on your performance today. He really is, he
:02:26. > :02:30.is very much a guy on the up improving his world ranking every
:02:31. > :02:34.year. Now up to 13, closing in on the big four. Seeded 11 but many
:02:35. > :02:36.people feel he could go all the way. At some point maybe this year he
:02:37. > :02:43.could claim the title. Wonderful talent. He signs every autograph. He
:02:44. > :02:49.is certainly one to watch in the future. Dimitrov is through. As Andy
:02:50. > :02:57.Castle was mentioning he is in Andy Murray 's quarter of the draw.
:02:58. > :03:06.He never looked in any trouble. Defeating David Goffin of Belgium.
:03:07. > :03:17.The Centre Court was packed to see him walk onto court. As soon as he
:03:18. > :03:25.left the court he spoke to Gary. Congratulations, a pleasing win. It
:03:26. > :03:29.was a very high standard. Maybe a bit nervous at the beginning. In the
:03:30. > :03:33.second and third set I thought the level was very high. He had some
:03:34. > :03:39.unbelievable passing shots. He was playing very well. The win in three,
:03:40. > :03:44.confidence wise, fantastic for you to start like that. Sometimes you
:03:45. > :03:50.can win in three sets and not play well and it can be a scrappy match.
:03:51. > :03:54.In terms of where I struck the ball today it was good. You've
:03:55. > :03:58.experienced every emotion on Centre Court, what was it like to go out
:03:59. > :04:04.there as the defending champion? It was nice, I was nervous this morning
:04:05. > :04:08.and yesterday. Walking to the court brings back a lot of good memories.
:04:09. > :04:17.It is nice to walk out to a full crowd for the first match. I got a
:04:18. > :04:22.nice round of applause. It's time to get ready for this year, and move
:04:23. > :04:29.onto last year. It brought back memories, which memories? Match
:04:30. > :04:33.point? Anyone particularly? Last year was the best memory I've had
:04:34. > :04:38.that I've had a lot of tough moments on that cold. There are a lot of
:04:39. > :04:43.things, when I'm on my way to the court, and I played the Olympics
:04:44. > :04:50.here, many close matches here. - on the court. Winning last year is the
:04:51. > :04:56.best memory. A great way to start, many congratulations. Thank you for
:04:57. > :05:00.joining us. We know Andy Murray will face this man, from Slovenia, ranked
:05:01. > :05:02.90 T in the world. He came through in straight sets on court five
:05:03. > :05:22.against Ferranti. - Pablo Andujar. Jeremy Chardy France has defeated
:05:23. > :05:32.Dan Cox, the wildcard of Great Britain in four sets. Jeremy Chardy
:05:33. > :05:34.is to to face metals the Australian who came through earlier today
:05:35. > :05:57.beating Fernando Verdasco. Marcus Buckland is here serving and
:05:58. > :06:02.match point. - at Baghdatis. He is ranked 119 at the moment but in
:06:03. > :06:13.tremendous form winning in four sets today. Li Na is also three, from
:06:14. > :06:21.China, seeded two at these championships, defeating the
:06:22. > :06:23.qualifier from Poland, 7-5, 6-2. She was a break down in the opening set
:06:24. > :06:38.but she came back, in straight sets. Out on Court Number Two this
:06:39. > :06:43.happened a moment ago, Venus Williams five times winner here is
:06:44. > :06:51.through bit in three very close sets. She was struggling against the
:06:52. > :07:00.Spanish player. Venus is though, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. - through. On BBC1
:07:01. > :07:03.and BBC Two we will keep you up-to-date with the results but
:07:04. > :07:15.there are many different ways you can watch Wimbledon in 2014. Don't

:08:02. > :08:10.player. - iPlayer. Wimbledon 2014, across the BBC. So many ways you can
:08:11. > :08:16.enjoy Wimbledon. Here comes Novak Djokovic. Arriving earlier today.
:08:17. > :08:20.Seeded number one this year. Earlier this year he suffered a wrist injury
:08:21. > :08:24.but he is back on form after making the final at the French Open. Chris
:08:25. > :08:28.Bowers has written a book about Novak Djokovic and relationship with
:08:29. > :08:33.his own country Serbia, and went to meet him as he goes for a second
:08:34. > :08:37.Wimbledon title. He was the man on the other side of the net when Andy
:08:38. > :08:40.Murray one Wimbledon, 12 months later he is back. How does he feel
:08:41. > :08:46.about having played a part in his friends becoming the first British
:08:47. > :08:49.Wimbledon champion in 77 years. Regardless of losing that much, I
:08:50. > :08:56.enjoyed it, being part of a very special moment for British tennis,
:08:57. > :09:01.for Andy. He deserved to win the match, he was the better player. In
:09:02. > :09:06.the more important moments. It is never easy when you are losing big
:09:07. > :09:12.matches. Wimbledon is always a dream tournament for me, a tournament that
:09:13. > :09:16.has given me so much motivation, inspiration to become a professional
:09:17. > :09:20.tennis player in my early childhood days with the tennis racket. This is
:09:21. > :09:24.the tournament I always wanted to win. The highlight of my career and
:09:25. > :09:32.the best memories I have is the 20 11th victory, on Wimbledon 's Centre
:09:33. > :09:34.Court. With six Grand Slam titles to his name Djokovic has established
:09:35. > :09:38.himself as one of the all-time greats. One of the people who played
:09:39. > :09:44.an important part in moulding him as a young star was the woman who began
:09:45. > :09:49.coaching him at age five. - youngster. The lessons she taught
:09:50. > :09:55.him in Serbia are still remembered. She meant the world to me, she was
:09:56. > :09:59.like my second mother. She was the person who loved this sport so much.
:10:00. > :10:05.She went beyond any kind of boundaries. She put all of her life,
:10:06. > :10:11.energy, love, passion, everything in tennis. She has taught me a lot of
:10:12. > :10:14.the basic things on the court. My kind of mindset, thinking, she has
:10:15. > :10:25.deeply engraved that in my mind kind of mindset, thinking, she has
:10:26. > :10:30.or five years. To have her pass away was of course very hurtful moment
:10:31. > :10:35.for me and my family. But at least I was happy to share the Wimbledon
:10:36. > :10:41.trophy with her when she was alive in 2011. I'm sure she is watching me
:10:42. > :10:47.from the sky and wishing I still compete and still have this hunger
:10:48. > :10:54.for practice, for improvement, for Wimbledon. What about this year?
:10:55. > :10:58.It's been nearly 18 months since his last Grand Slam victory that there
:10:59. > :10:59.is a new addition to his team. Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris
:11:00. > :11:11.Becker. There is a confident air in camp
:11:12. > :11:15.Djokovic. I always look forward to playing at Wimbledon. Not just
:11:16. > :11:18.because it's a Grand Slam but because it is the most important
:11:19. > :11:25.tournament, the most traditional one. It carries the most value,
:11:26. > :11:28.those are some kind of sensations that you have experienced as a
:11:29. > :11:32.those are some kind of sensations tennis player when you are on the
:11:33. > :11:39.court, especially in Centre Court. Having Boris on board, will
:11:40. > :11:44.definitely help. I hope. And we are working on a lot of things in my
:11:45. > :11:48.game. Mostly, to get myself in the right mindset. And to have a very
:11:49. > :11:58.positive approach to this years event. It wasn't easy to bounce back
:11:59. > :12:02.from Roland Garros, losing in the final, but he knows how I feel, what
:12:03. > :12:08.I experience, the challenges and facing as a top player in the big
:12:09. > :12:11.events. As you mentioned, he has won three times here so it feels like
:12:12. > :12:17.home soil and hopefully we can have a great two weeks. He will certainly
:12:18. > :12:20.have a great week if he can make it through the final and win the
:12:21. > :12:24.tournament once again as he has done once before. You wonder, that
:12:25. > :12:29.emotional toll of losing the French Open final, how much that will
:12:30. > :12:35.affect Novak Djokovic. He is coming on court with Andrey Golubev.
:12:36. > :12:48.APPLAUSE He may be ranked number two bit he
:12:49. > :12:55.is the number one seed, he is the bookies favourite, 7-4 to win the
:12:56. > :12:59.title. - but. After the form he showed last year in the final, he
:13:00. > :13:04.very nearly got his way back into that match against Andy Murray.
:13:05. > :13:09.Tremendous pedigree, on all surfaces, Novak Djokovic. The
:13:10. > :13:13.opening round against Andrey Golubev ranked 54 in the world although he
:13:14. > :13:17.has been as high as 33. He has never got past the first round of
:13:18. > :13:22.Wimbledon in three attempts. What a way to start here, on Centre Court
:13:23. > :13:25.against the top seed. Boris Becker will be watching from Novak
:13:26. > :13:30.Djokovic's box, three-time champion is in his corner. Let's hear from
:13:31. > :13:43.our commentators John Lloyd and Chris Bradley.
:13:44. > :13:55.Be careful of damaging the court, if you throw a racket. Any questions?
:13:56. > :14:01.Damaging the court no matter where wouldn't be great.
:14:02. > :14:16.COMMENTATOR: The umpire is saying that to all of the players. Please
:14:17. > :14:19.don't damage the court. I like that, it's another thing, you have to
:14:20. > :14:23.throw your racket in a way that doesn't cause a divot. There is now
:14:24. > :14:45.a crosscourt technique on how to throw your racket. - grasscourt.
:14:46. > :14:53.There is quite a buzz around the Centre Court. Everyone taking
:14:54. > :14:58.pictures. Remembering 12 months ago. 27 years old now, Djokovic. Elevated
:14:59. > :15:07.to top seed, ranked number one in the world. Grasscourt performance,
:15:08. > :15:17.is the formula the all England committee uses. 44 titles for the
:15:18. > :15:23.Serb, six majors. Boris has been brought in to try to help him win
:15:24. > :15:28.the big matches. He has lost quite a few major finals in the last couple
:15:29. > :15:31.of years. He has, I think people say do you have two have been a great
:15:32. > :15:35.player to be a great coach and the answer is no, you do not. There is a
:15:36. > :15:42.lot of evidence, but having said that, at Grand Slams, at crucial
:15:43. > :15:45.periods, in an event, to have someone who has been there and done
:15:46. > :15:49.it, can possibly make the difference. It is only minor things
:15:50. > :15:53.but that can be the difference perhaps going out in a final with
:15:54. > :15:58.just a little bit more confidence, or reacting to semifinals, or
:15:59. > :16:01.whatever it is. A grand slam winner can help you in that regard. I think
:16:02. > :16:07.Boris Becker signing up was very good, but this is the key, this is
:16:08. > :16:11.where he was the king, Boris Becker, and he will be at home here. I'm
:16:12. > :16:15.sure when he walked into the gates for the first time during this two
:16:16. > :16:18.weeks there was a bit of a swagger about him and that will have
:16:19. > :16:26.transmitted through to Novak Djokovic. It is all part of it.
:16:27. > :16:35.A year younger, Golubev, 26, six but one, one inch shorter than Djokovic,
:16:36. > :16:41.or three centimetres. - six feet. 33 in the world, in October 2010. His
:16:42. > :16:46.fourth visit to Wimbledon. In the main draw. He lost a couple of years
:16:47. > :16:52.in qualifying but he has never won a main draw match. The first round in
:16:53. > :16:58.2009 he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the second year to Tomas Berdych. In
:16:59. > :17:20.the third round, 2011, information of those three first rounds,
:17:21. > :17:23.the third round, 2011, information bet he's on a talented player. - but
:17:24. > :17:28.he's on his way up with his ranking. They have met a couple of times
:17:29. > :17:32.before, both times in Indian Wells, not many games rescued by Golubev.
:17:33. > :17:41.Does grass change any of that early on? The first match at a grand slam,
:17:42. > :17:44.it always throws up a little bit of doubt in anybody. If you nerds creep
:17:45. > :17:54.in. Golubev here on the Centre Court. - some nerves creep in. Will
:17:55. > :17:58.he go up the level. Some players get inspired, they come out on the
:17:59. > :18:01.Centre Court, play against one of the big guns, they play
:18:02. > :18:04.fantastically. We've seen that the last few years with upsets,
:18:05. > :18:07.sometimes they freeze, you don't know. It's fascinating to see what
:18:08. > :18:11.will happen, will he come out on strike the ball the way he can, if
:18:12. > :18:17.he does that, we could have a big match. The fans are fanning
:18:18. > :18:27.themselves, it's been a beautiful start to day one. Jake Garner, in
:18:28. > :18:30.the chair from the United States. Djokovic has mentioned coming in the
:18:31. > :18:36.air, he hasn't played a warm up grasscourt tournament since 2010. --
:18:37. > :18:41.coming in here. He says making the transition from clay to grass, he's
:18:42. > :18:45.felt a bit of his twinge in the right wrist, he had a problem in
:18:46. > :18:48.Monte Carlo against Federer and missed a couple of tournaments.
:18:49. > :18:52.There was talk you might miss the French, he didn't have an operation.
:18:53. > :18:58.-- he might. When you make the transition from clay to grass why
:18:59. > :19:01.would he feel his wrist more? Particularly at the start you hit
:19:02. > :19:05.the ball a bit late on grass, the ball comes through faster, it comes
:19:06. > :19:10.at you at different angles, it comes off the court very quickly, it comes
:19:11. > :19:16.lower. A lot of times, grass is a difficult surface to get used to,
:19:17. > :19:21.and to time the ball. Sometimes you can get, your wrist can get tweaked
:19:22. > :19:26.a little bit. It can happen. I don't think not playing the warm up
:19:27. > :19:29.tournament is any big deal. When you're as good as Novak Djokovic and
:19:30. > :19:31.you've had a good run at the French Open, you have the matches in
:19:32. > :19:35.you've had a good run at the French bank. It's not like he doesn't know
:19:36. > :19:39.how to play on grass. Good grasscourt players are just very
:19:40. > :19:45.quickly. I and large. Boris Becker did a pretty good job. I don't know
:19:46. > :19:49.what is more remarkable, coming here at 17 and winning it all coming back
:19:50. > :19:54.12 months later and winning it at 18. It is remarkable. There is no
:19:55. > :19:59.doubt that is the reason why he has been brought in, he's lost five of
:20:00. > :20:05.his last six major finals, Djokovic. It's interesting, I
:20:06. > :20:08.watched him sitting alongside, in the French Open, especially the
:20:09. > :20:13.final against Rafa Nadal, he doesn't say very much. Respected, during the
:20:14. > :20:18.matches. But when there was some negative body land which, during the
:20:19. > :20:28.back-end of the third set -- language, Boris was tend to the
:20:29. > :20:32.dozen. -- tend to the dozen. With these great players who have won
:20:33. > :20:34.Grand Slams, you watch people on TV and generally speaking they are
:20:35. > :20:39.pretty good at disguising their emotions. You look at most of them
:20:40. > :20:42.and you think they are pretty much in control. They have no doubts
:20:43. > :20:47.about what they are going to do but that is wrong. The great players, do
:20:48. > :20:54.occasionally have little doubts before big matches. That is why to
:20:55. > :20:58.have a grand slam player like Boris Becker in your camp, he knows how
:20:59. > :21:05.help you with little things, to say what you're feeling, he's been there
:21:06. > :21:54.and done it. UMPIRE: Djokovic to serve. Ready.
:21:55. > :22:00.APPLAUSE A few unusual things
:22:01. > :22:05.APPLAUSE seeing Djokovic serve and volley.
:22:06. > :22:08.Then he hit a drive, two-handed backhand volley, his first shot,
:22:09. > :22:12.that was a bit strange. backhand volley, his first shot,
:22:13. > :22:35.the reflex volley, an interesting start.
:22:36. > :22:46.APPLAUSE He is hitting the ball right out in
:22:47. > :22:50.the middle. A few comments from Boris Becker. That is a pretty
:22:51. > :22:57.fearsome start. I don't think you said, Novak looked a bit nervous in
:22:58. > :23:00.that first game! -- he said. All guns firing from the first second
:23:01. > :23:05.out there. Six months together with Boris, on the grass he will come
:23:06. > :23:17.into his own. It will be all eyes on the relationship, as it will be with
:23:18. > :23:19.said Berg, the fatback factor. -- Fedberg. Golubev needs to start
:23:20. > :23:24.well. The first time on Centre Court it
:23:25. > :24:57.takes a while to get your bearings. He is probably breathing a little
:24:58. > :26:11.heavier than normal. A bit erratic in this game. Golubev.
:26:12. > :26:20.A couple of tight round strokes. APPLAUSE
:26:21. > :26:59.Pretty tight in Golubev 's box as well. Break point straightaway.
:27:00. > :27:41.That's dangerous. Mixing up the volley is a good idea that that
:27:42. > :27:47.serve, you either have to get it into the body or it has to go a lot
:27:48. > :27:49.wider. That one was into the nice hitting zone of Novak Djokovic, he
:27:50. > :28:17.will love those. APPLAUSE
:28:18. > :28:28.A little slip from Djokovic at the start of that point. Different
:28:29. > :28:41.footwork patterns required on the grass. No heavy steps.
:28:42. > :28:58.APPLAUSE Nails are disappearing already after
:28:59. > :29:47.seven minutes. It's a big day for everybody in the Golubev camp.
:29:48. > :29:53.APPLAUSE A good try. Little steps to put the
:29:54. > :30:37.brakes on. volley as well. This is a big game
:30:38. > :31:57.already. JOHN LLOYD: Excellent sliced
:31:58. > :32:03.backhand there from Djokovic. Keeping it very low. A lot of work
:32:04. > :32:18.on the ball, it is really skidding off the court.
:32:19. > :32:28.Amazing how much the serve as improved over the last two or three
:32:29. > :32:34.years. Used to bounce it umpteen times, that has been restricted. He
:32:35. > :32:37.also had that hitch in his motion for a while, when he was serving
:32:38. > :32:46.double faults all over the place. Corrected all of that. Wow! That was
:32:47. > :32:53.a sweet, one-handed backhand. Applauded by everybody, including
:32:54. > :33:46.the opponent. Well, it is a very sharp start,
:33:47. > :33:51.composed start, by Novak Djokovic. You mentioned the sliced act hand,
:33:52. > :33:55.John, and the way he comes in - of the three services for Djokovic,
:33:56. > :33:59.which one do you think his game is best suited for? I think here's a
:34:00. > :34:05.better player on hard courts than anything else. That is the surface
:34:06. > :34:09.to me where he can play his best tennis. I think it suits his game.
:34:10. > :34:13.He can play well on every surface, he is a great clay-court player, it
:34:14. > :34:17.is just unfortunate that there is a certain Rafa Nadal around. But he
:34:18. > :34:25.can play on anything. His game is very well-balanced. He does not
:34:26. > :34:29.struggle anywhere. I think he is excellent on every surface, it makes
:34:30. > :34:34.no difference to him. But I do think he has added things to his game on
:34:35. > :34:40.the grass. There is a lot more bite on that slice than there used to be.
:34:41. > :34:43.His first serve has improved unbelievably over the last four or
:34:44. > :34:48.five years, and I think his second serve has also improved out of
:34:49. > :35:01.sight. His service now is awesome, a lot of pace on it, a lot of variety.
:35:02. > :36:13.APPLAUSE. Just another illustration of how
:36:14. > :36:19.hard Djokovic makes you work, even though he lost that point, twice,
:36:20. > :36:28.really. He had no right to even be in the point.
:36:29. > :36:41.He forces you to aim for more, to get closer to the lines, because
:36:42. > :36:43.otherwise you are not getting any points, and that is when the errors
:36:44. > :36:57.start to flow. Well, that is the second slip from
:36:58. > :37:15.Mr elastic. It is unsettling, perhaps. You can
:37:16. > :37:18.see that he slips, but his eyes are still on the ball. That is all he is
:37:19. > :37:28.thinking about, getting up to make the winner.
:37:29. > :37:35.He is one of the players, Djokovic, that slides on a grass court.
:37:36. > :37:40.Amazing, even with the pimpled shoes. Has there ever been a more
:37:41. > :38:10.flexible player? Nice.
:38:11. > :38:14.UMPIRE: Advantage, Djokovic. Well, he has certainly come out with
:38:15. > :38:17.a plan to be aggressive and come in whenever he can. He is not getting
:38:18. > :38:32.that much reward out of it so far. This game is so crucial, though. If
:38:33. > :39:15.he can just hold this game, it will give him a bit of confidence.
:39:16. > :39:28.Too good. UMPIRE: Game, Djokovic.
:39:29. > :39:37.It is a bleak scoreboard, but it could be 2-2. It could be, but at
:39:38. > :39:42.that speed, it has to be perfect, the direction of the service, at
:39:43. > :39:51.118mph, he is going to get punished, if it is not perfect.
:39:52. > :39:56.He has not played badly and he is down 4-0. That is where you can
:39:57. > :40:08.start to think... The way he has started, cheap points
:40:09. > :40:43.must feel like a national holiday. A familiar face, David Spearing, the
:40:44. > :40:48.Championships longest serving Stuart. He has held that seat in the
:40:49. > :41:25.players box for 18 years. It underlines your point, not
:41:26. > :41:27.playing a grass court warm up tournament before coming to
:41:28. > :41:32.Wimbledon has not made any difference to Djokovic at all. As
:41:33. > :41:36.long as you have a good run at the French, I do not think you need it.
:41:37. > :41:42.I think next year, when it is a three-week gap, that is a different
:41:43. > :41:45.matter. But with a two-week gap, it is a quick turnaround, and if you
:41:46. > :41:50.have got to the later stages of the French, I do not think the matches
:41:51. > :41:55.are there. The top players, literally, it takes you an hour or
:41:56. > :42:01.two to get used to the grass. You start swinging the ball, you just
:42:02. > :42:05.automatically, it is like Rafa Nadal, he immediately moves three
:42:06. > :42:11.feet closer to the baseline. It is just instinct, not something you
:42:12. > :42:15.have to get the grass court manual out. Novak has had plenty of
:42:16. > :42:24.matches, he knows what is best. Well,
:42:25. > :42:34.times this year. Apart Well,
:42:35. > :42:39.problem. Stan Well,
:42:40. > :42:46.Australian, federal twice and Nadal, his
:42:47. > :42:53.Golubev must be feeling a bit lonely. This is what happens, when
:42:54. > :42:55.you go up against one of the greats. You are out of your comfort zone and
:42:56. > :44:08.you start going for too much. His coach. And he is feeling it,
:44:09. > :45:03.too. His eyes narrow when he is looking
:45:04. > :45:21.at the reaction after the errors of Djokovic.
:45:22. > :46:15.UMPIRE: Game and first set, Djokovic.
:46:16. > :46:20.Wow! Not bad! 24 minutes. It makes that second game of the match, when
:46:21. > :46:25.Golubev, he had game point, he was saving break point, but once he got
:46:26. > :46:36.that first break, it has been an uphill battle ever since. It is just
:46:37. > :46:41.awesome to watch. Word is Golubev go from here? It is interesting. There
:46:42. > :46:48.has always been a lot of talk about, will they ever bring in coaching on
:46:49. > :46:52.court? This to me is one of the reasons why we do not have it and
:46:53. > :46:56.shouldn't. Because they have come on with a game plan, and obviously it
:46:57. > :47:00.is not working, there could be reasons for it, it could be that he
:47:01. > :47:06.is not executing it the right way, or whatever. But now, does he change
:47:07. > :47:08.things, does he do it on his instinct, or does he keep on the
:47:09. > :47:14.game plan which he and his coach have sorted out and no it is is that
:47:15. > :47:27.it, isn't it? It is a complete and utter whitewash. 71% first serves
:47:28. > :47:35.in, he will take that for the rest of the two weeks. Golubev is not
:47:36. > :47:44.winning points on his serve, he is winning more on his second serve!
:47:45. > :47:48.Now, does he change it up? He is almost trying too hard, that is what
:47:49. > :47:53.I think. He has just got to pull its down a little bit. It is easy to
:47:54. > :49:15.say, but at the moment he is just taking too many chances.
:49:16. > :49:30.123mph, and it was effortless as well.
:49:31. > :49:59.It even feels like it is more than that.
:50:00. > :50:10.How low did he get on that backhand?!
:50:11. > :50:14.UMPIRE: First game, second set. New we get so many stats now, and as a
:50:15. > :50:16.player, you have got to feel the stats, things like serve direction,
:50:17. > :50:35.so you can read it. JOHN LLOYD: Well, the variation is
:50:36. > :50:38.pretty good, isn't it? He has not lost a point yet when going out
:50:39. > :50:54.wide. There is a good mix. Just keep your eye on Djokovic's
:50:55. > :50:57.body. He seldom moves the wrong way. He reads it so well, his eyes are
:50:58. > :51:17.wide open. All players have habits, but
:51:18. > :51:23.Djokovic, on the return, his eyes get saucerlike. It is like is
:51:24. > :51:46.reminding to watch the ball. And that is what happens when you
:51:47. > :51:51.are getting beaten so easily and a little bit of panic comes in, and
:51:52. > :51:52.you try a second serve for an ace, and you serve a double fault of.
:51:53. > :52:18.This is what happens. The Serb was not that bad, but
:52:19. > :52:22.Djokovic was on to it straightaway. Reading everything. It must be a
:52:23. > :52:32.horrible feeling for Golubev. Absolute nightmare.
:52:33. > :52:37.You obviously want to enjoy the experience of playing on the
:52:38. > :52:39.greatest tennis court in the world, but trust me, you do not enjoy it
:52:40. > :53:39.when you are getting demolished. UMPIRE: Game, Djokovic.
:53:40. > :53:43.That is 8-0, in 32 minutes. He is serving an volley into much now. It
:53:44. > :53:49.is not a surprise tactic any more, and Djokovic is onto it. His serve
:53:50. > :53:51.is not strong enough to serve-and-volley, only
:53:52. > :54:01.that he is doing it twice again, and it is not working.
:54:02. > :54:09.That was a bit of a casual first volley. Boris will be putting that
:54:10. > :54:50.in the book. It is just beautiful rhythm, there
:54:51. > :55:00.is so little that can go wrong with this serve. A few years ago, he was
:55:01. > :55:06.up to 29 bounces. I just did not think he wanted to hit one. No,
:55:07. > :55:11.well, he had that hitch in his serve, and you watched it, you would
:55:12. > :55:16.be feeling sorry for him, the serve was so bad. I remember the French
:55:17. > :55:21.Open, he could hardly even spin it in, although he still ended up
:55:22. > :55:30.getting to the quarterfinals. His serve was so bad, you thought, he is
:55:31. > :55:41.never going to recover. UMPIRE: Game, Djokovic.
:55:42. > :55:50.The frightening thing as well is, Djokovic is playing so within
:55:51. > :55:53.himself. You can understand why Golubev is trying so many different
:55:54. > :55:59.things, because everything he has tried, the door has been slammed in
:56:00. > :56:04.his face. No question. But he is just a little bit over the top. It
:56:05. > :56:13.is easy to say it, but he has gone outside of his comfort zone. It is
:56:14. > :56:16.not working. It is understandable, because he is starting to panic. He
:56:17. > :56:21.looks calm, but believe me, inside right now, this is a very tough
:56:22. > :56:25.position to be in, and he does not know how to get out of it. He is
:56:26. > :56:30.playing against someone where, the ball is coming back at him in awful
:56:31. > :56:34.places, and his feet, it does not matter what he does, it is just
:56:35. > :56:38.coming back at him, and he does not know how to find a way through the
:56:39. > :56:44.defences. He is pushing too hard. He has got to relax, easy to say,
:56:45. > :56:53.somehow get on the board, not push it quite as much. Novak will miss
:56:54. > :56:56.occasionally, he is human - I think. Sir Jackie Stewart. Steve Rider,
:56:57. > :57:25.also enjoying the tennis. Played Eastbourne last week,
:57:26. > :57:33.Golubev, and lost to Bernard Tomic, four and four. He took a set off
:57:34. > :58:03.Murray at the French. APPLAUSE
:58:04. > :58:07.. That was a more patient point, he built that point. He did not try to
:58:08. > :58:11.go for it when the percentages were not in his favour. He has just got
:58:12. > :58:18.to win one game, and get on the board. The crowd are getting ready!
:58:19. > :58:33.They are! That was 102mph on that second
:58:34. > :58:36.serve, it was deep, it was in a good position on the court, but what does
:58:37. > :59:16.he do? He hits a clean winner. The defensive skills of Djokovic - a
:59:17. > :59:19.great defender. Andy Murray said at the French - great success comes
:59:20. > :59:28.from great defence. Absolutely right.
:59:29. > :59:34.You feel for him. 30-0 up in this game. The crowd are now starting to
:59:35. > :59:55.get behind him. UMPIRE: Game, Djokovic.
:59:56. > :00:01.Well, we will be needing the record books soon, if this continues.
:00:02. > :00:08.And the great players, they are hungry for every point. They just do
:00:09. > :00:14.not want to think, well, 6-0, 6-0, maybe lose a game. Their thought is,
:00:15. > :00:17.every point, they try and win. There is no feeling sorry or anything like
:00:18. > :00:28.that. That does not enter their head.
:00:29. > :00:39.believe that. He read that so quickly. He played it beautifully,
:00:40. > :00:45.did all the hard work. He picked that and was on it in a flash. He
:00:46. > :01:26.couldn't resist the smile afterwards.
:01:27. > :01:42.APPLAUSE What a mixture there, of pace,
:01:43. > :01:44.accuracy and touch. Do you remember days like this when you can do no
:01:45. > :02:57.wrong? Not like this, no. Number 38, Golubev. He has ranked 56
:02:58. > :03:02.in his rollover ranking. Look at that school board, that is how
:03:03. > :03:05.complete Djokovic is at the moment. -- scoreboard. You can hear the
:03:06. > :03:11.murmuring in the crowd, they are looking at this, seeing an
:03:12. > :03:15.exhibition basically, of amazing tennis in the first round of
:03:16. > :03:21.Wimbledon when normally it takes you a bit of time to get your bearings
:03:22. > :03:28.no matter who you are. It is a joy to watch, this is where he picked
:03:29. > :03:35.up, anticipated this backhand volley, flipped it over crosscourt,
:03:36. > :03:39.doing that fist pump at that score in the match, he is eager. He is
:03:40. > :03:46.eager. In this year, elevated to be on top seed with the formula we
:03:47. > :03:50.mentioned earlier. It's almost like he has the memory of last year and
:03:51. > :03:58.he wants to make a huge impression right from the off. I agree. Again,
:03:59. > :04:05.it is Boris Becker who talked long and hard about the impact, he could
:04:06. > :04:06.have. They have had six months together since January, this is the
:04:07. > :04:12.biggest impact he will together since January, this is the
:04:13. > :04:13.favourite surface. They are desperate for Golubev the crowd, to
:04:14. > :04:31.get on the scoreboard. APPLAUSE
:04:32. > :04:36.If he had lost that point he could have almost gone home. From the
:04:37. > :04:40.start in the crowd you could hear when the lob went up it was like,
:04:41. > :04:48.please, you have two win this point. He did. Just maybe. -- to win.
:04:49. > :05:04.APPLAUSE In the way the crowd have helped him
:05:05. > :05:38.focus on one point at a time. It must be pretty difficult right now.
:05:39. > :06:21.A massive cheer for Golubev who has a game on the board. This match if
:06:22. > :06:24.you want to continue watching is now moving to BBC Two because we're
:06:25. > :06:28.coming to the end of our transmission on BBC1. Before we
:06:29. > :06:32.leave our update you with some of the big stories of the day. First of
:06:33. > :06:39.all let's round up some of the major results. Tomas Berdych, former
:06:40. > :06:43.runner-up, number six seed has one in four sets. He is through to round
:06:44. > :06:56.two. APPLAUSE
:06:57. > :07:02.He will face this man, Bernard Tomic of Australia, who came through
:07:03. > :07:10.against the Russians, 6-4, six - three, 6-2. That will be tasty. --
:07:11. > :07:11.the Russian. In the ladies championship Venus Williams came to
:07:12. > :07:36.a 3-set battle against Before we go Tim Henman has joined
:07:37. > :07:44.me to reflect on what was an emotional return for Andy Murray. He
:07:45. > :07:49.was on Centre Court one year on from becoming the first man for 77 years
:07:50. > :07:52.to win the Wimbledon title. It was an emotional day for Andy Murray and
:07:53. > :08:04.we followed him every step of the way.
:08:05. > :08:09.Wimbledon is underway, the weather is glorious, there is so much
:08:10. > :08:17.excitement, a real buzz around the ground. Wimbledon champion is on
:08:18. > :08:24.court. He relishes pressure here, you did the hard work last year. I
:08:25. > :08:28.think he'll be fine. I expect to be nervous, I expect to feel the
:08:29. > :08:31.pressure as they go towards the court. I hope when I walk out of
:08:32. > :08:35.there I can enjoy it for a few moments. After the first couple of
:08:36. > :08:38.games you start to settle into the match. As he steps back out to
:08:39. > :08:54.Centre Court expectations are high. An ideal day, an ideal start to his
:08:55. > :09:09.defence. He has a firm hold on this opening
:09:10. > :09:47.round match. He overwhelmed the diminutive
:09:48. > :09:54.Belgian, out muscled him, out for two. He needs through swiftly into
:09:55. > :09:58.the second round. -- moves through. Sometimes you don't play well and it
:09:59. > :09:59.is a scrappy match but in terms of the way I struck the ball today, it
:10:00. > :10:14.was a good start. Well done Andy, at the start of the
:10:15. > :10:18.day you look at the stats, only twice in Wimbledon 's history has a
:10:19. > :10:23.defending men's champion lost in the first round. Don't give us any
:10:24. > :10:27.wobbles, he didn't. He didn't, he was spot on, he said he was nervous
:10:28. > :10:32.yesterday. He thought he would be nervous this morning. Starting his
:10:33. > :10:35.preparation. He looked like he was pretty keen to get on with it and
:10:36. > :10:39.wanting got on the court he seemed like he found his rhythm so quickly
:10:40. > :10:43.from the back of the court. He struck the border so cleanly. He was
:10:44. > :10:48.offensive, he served consistently, he took his chances when he got
:10:49. > :10:52.them. It was a perfect start. He will be glad to have that under his
:10:53. > :10:56.belt. Sometimes the build-up is more nerve wracking than the actual
:10:57. > :10:59.tournament. Sometimes you take into consideration he had an early loss
:11:00. > :11:04.at Queen's. They would never have read into that much, I don't think
:11:05. > :11:08.it was going to have an impact on his performance at Wimbledon. --
:11:09. > :11:12.match. It makes that period between the end of Queen's and the start of
:11:13. > :11:15.Wimbledon that bit longer. He's had time to get used to the conditions
:11:16. > :11:19.that you have plenty of time to think about your first-round match.
:11:20. > :11:23.I'm sure he would have played through in his mind different
:11:24. > :11:26.scenarios. And the best scenario would have been coming out, getting
:11:27. > :11:30.an early break of serve, winning the first set coming getting two sets
:11:31. > :11:33.pretty quickly and winning in straight sets, that is exactly what
:11:34. > :11:37.happened. He will be chuffed with the way that happens. Although
:11:38. > :11:41.Goffin doesn't have huge weapons he is a tricky player, you cannot let
:11:42. > :11:46.him into the match. Andy had to stay strong all the way through. We know
:11:47. > :11:50.at this level there are no easy matches. Goffin probably hasn't had
:11:51. > :11:55.the best of form this year. In the past we have seen what sort of
:11:56. > :11:59.natural skills he has, he is very talented. He perhaps doesn't quite
:12:00. > :12:03.have the weight of shot to trouble the best players, and certainly not
:12:04. > :12:08.to trouble Andy today. That and he still has deeply professional, go
:12:09. > :12:11.out there and execute his game plan. -- to be. Concentrate on the things
:12:12. > :12:18.he can control, his preparation and performance. He did all of those
:12:19. > :12:21.things, there was not an element of his game that he looked like he was
:12:22. > :12:26.struggling with. The courts always a bit slippery, he moved well, he
:12:27. > :12:30.served consistently. It was a good start, I don't think we should over
:12:31. > :12:36.analyse it, there is a way to go. Oh let's. People don't know a lot about
:12:37. > :12:40.him but it should be comfortable. I will have to do my research because
:12:41. > :12:48.I don't know a lot about him that it was a good start today. James would
:12:49. > :12:52.beat him at Queen's. -- James Ward. Tim and I were courtside on Centre
:12:53. > :12:57.Court when anti-war come to court and it was a wonderful atmosphere.
:12:58. > :13:01.-- when Andy came on to court. The crowd stood when he won in straight
:13:02. > :13:05.sets. Andy is up and running, so is Wimbledon. Goodbye for now.
