:06:47. > :06:51.I was focused. I was extremely focused, I would say. I think I was
:06:52. > :06:56.much more nervous during my first final. Having played once already
:06:57. > :07:02.before helped me to deal with the pressure. She is such a big hitter,
:07:03. > :07:06.Sabine Lisicki. I had a bad record against her, I lost the last three
:07:07. > :07:12.matches we had played, when in the qualifying at Wimbledon. And angling
:07:13. > :07:21.Mauresmo was in your corner and is now with Mr Murray! She helped you a

:07:25. > :07:32.gave me the right advice and helped me to channel the pressure. -- she
:07:33. > :07:38.helped me to learn this live. I'm going to cry already! LAUGHTER
:07:39. > :07:42.This is the dream come true. Do you remember much about it was a table?
:07:43. > :07:49.I remember it well, especially the last game when I had my dad and my
:07:50. > :07:53.friends, trying to get me across the line to finally win the title. I
:07:54. > :07:57.remember I wanted to hit that spot on the server and I did it, and I
:07:58. > :08:06.just fell on my knees, saying, oh, my God! I could not believe it. It
:08:07. > :08:13.took me a good month to realise that I really did win Wimbledon. Have you
:08:14. > :08:24.watched it back many times? Probably 364 times! One everyday! LAUGHTER

:08:28. > :08:33.doing different stuff, it's difficult as well. Every time I need
:08:34. > :08:41.a boost, I'd go on YouTube and I watch it. It goes pretty quickly! It
:08:42. > :08:46.brings back a huge smile on my face. Now I can go back to work! You've
:08:47. > :08:50.got the trophy and won a Grand Slam and more importantly you have become
:08:51. > :08:55.above the club sold forever you will be able to be due on the lawn as
:08:56. > :09:05.Wimbledon champion. Which is nice. We will be seeing your having lunch
:09:06. > :09:12.for many to come. I will tell my boyfriend. LAUGHTER
:09:13. > :09:20.. Changing the subject very quickly, Tim, what can we talk
:09:21. > :09:23.about? A day of champions on court. It certainly is. Roger Federer on
:09:24. > :09:27.Court One, Rafael Nadal on Centre Court. When you reflect on their
:09:28. > :09:31.performances last year it was a very different scenario for them so they
:09:32. > :09:35.will be very keen to get off to a good positive start. They are both
:09:36. > :09:41.in good form, Roger Federer women in Germany on grass, and a Rafael Nadal
:09:42. > :09:46.winning in Paris. -- Roger Federer winning in Germany. It will be
:09:47. > :09:51.interesting to see how they start their campaign. Rafael Nadal did not
:09:52. > :09:57.do at Wimbledon very well last year, he lost in the second round two
:09:58. > :10:00.years ago, and then he lost in the first round last. Russell has been
:10:01. > :10:20.talking to him as he tries to recapture past glories. COMMENTATOR:
:10:21. > :10:26.Nadal is on the ascendancy on this court. There's a new man in tennis!
:10:27. > :10:31.Rafael Nadal! Wimbledon is the second Grand Slam at which I had
:10:32. > :10:35.success in my career. I had been in five finals, winning two, it's
:10:36. > :10:40.great, it is a tournament I love so much, I am excited to be back and
:10:41. > :10:47.looking forward to playing. These great championships have produced
:10:48. > :10:54.huge, huge upsets. This is one of the biggest in history. I did not
:10:55. > :10:59.play tennis for seven months after I lost. My knee was not 100%. I think
:11:00. > :11:14.I did not prepare myself well for that. Opportunities are not forever
:11:15. > :11:22.and if you have some mistakes with your serve... COMMENTATOR:.
:11:23. > :11:33.Outstanding. Wimbledon history performance! From Steve Darcis.
:11:34. > :11:42.Nadal has lost in the first round of a major. The need is better in every
:11:43. > :11:47.practice. Much better. -- my knee is better. It is important for me that
:11:48. > :11:50.my knee is giving me the chance to practice more than I did in the last
:11:51. > :11:59.couple of years, I think I am practising well, after 2012, you
:12:00. > :12:03.imagine that you will probably not have the chance to be back at your
:12:04. > :12:10.best level, and finally I did. I came back, I played an amazing year
:12:11. > :12:21.last year, and busier, for the first six of the year, I'm playing very
:12:22. > :12:27.well again. I would best to have another second part of the season, a
:12:28. > :12:32.positive one. SUE BARKER: he is such a gracious champion. He has not done
:12:33. > :12:37.as well as he would have liked in the past two years. What part does
:12:38. > :12:40.confidence play? It plays a part, for me it is also physical with
:12:41. > :12:45.Rafael Nadal. We all knew about his knee. The grasscourt is a service
:12:46. > :12:50.when you have to bend low and you put more stress on to your lower
:12:51. > :12:54.back and your knees. I think it will probably go to two phases, the first
:12:55. > :12:58.is in practice, to test his body and see if he reacts well, and then to
:12:59. > :13:02.but everything to the side when you walk on court and stay positive.
:13:03. > :13:06.He's just won the French Open once more which is beyond amazing. To
:13:07. > :13:10.carry this confidence, in the week of practice, look at all the small
:13:11. > :13:16.details. If you look at this, a fabulous record, that he has at
:13:17. > :13:22.Wimbledon, only in the last two years, was it the injuries? Thinks
:13:23. > :13:27.the last. It surprised me. I felt that coming onto grass it would be a
:13:28. > :13:32.good surface because it was soft on his knees, but I think Marion is
:13:33. > :13:38.right, the ball sometimes does state much lower, there is more bending
:13:39. > :13:43.from the knees and the back, -- it does stay lower. It was so sad to
:13:44. > :13:45.the when he played against Steve Darcis and was struggling so much
:13:46. > :13:51.but it is the sign of a great champion, he was able to come back
:13:52. > :13:54.from that, the way that he has played in Paris, it's inevitable
:13:55. > :14:00.that he can say with confidence now. I think the first round is
:14:01. > :14:03.always tricky in any tournament. Given those circumstances from last
:14:04. > :14:08.year, he will be very keen to get a win and if his belt today, and build
:14:09. > :14:12.on that for the rest of the tournament. Will the weather be a
:14:13. > :14:19.factor? It is sunny. Last year it was cold and damp. If I could point
:14:20. > :14:22.something out, everyone on clay, when they drew no doubt they would
:14:23. > :14:29.want to book their flight tickets for the next day. On grass, they
:14:30. > :14:34.will think, if there is a high seed that I can take on, it might be him.
:14:35. > :14:38.Sometimes, from the opener, they play out of their minds because they
:14:39. > :14:42.know that in a way that he is beatable on that surface. I think
:14:43. > :14:47.that is something that he has two take into account as well, but
:14:48. > :14:51.playing in sunny conditions will help him. He is on Centre Court
:14:52. > :14:56.against Martin Klizan who has made the third round of two Grand Slams
:14:57. > :14:59.and is left-handed, always tough. Back to the weather, everyone sees
:15:00. > :15:06.that in the first few days the courts and a bit slippery, and that
:15:07. > :15:11.can make it tricky. With this really hot weather, that will help to dry
:15:12. > :15:14.them a bit. The courts are always hard. I think that will favour
:15:15. > :15:18.Rafael Nadal, that they dry out and the ball will bounce high which he
:15:19. > :15:25.likes, he can get underneath it for his forehand. He is always such a
:15:26. > :15:29.great champion, such a great person, so humble, he always treats every
:15:30. > :15:33.player with such respect. He will go out on the court today knowing that
:15:34. > :15:36.he's got to put in a good performance to make sure that there
:15:37. > :15:42.are no upsets in his part of the draw. Talking of upsets, it was not
:15:43. > :15:48.just him, Roger Federer lasted, he looked so comfortable on grass, and
:15:49. > :15:54.out he went. I was totally shocked. By that Wednesday, last year was
:15:55. > :15:59.historical in so many different ways, we won't see a like that for a
:16:00. > :16:03.long, long time. I think his opponent said before the match, I
:16:04. > :16:08.will just serve and volley and come to the net as much as possible just
:16:09. > :16:14.to not look ridiculous against Roger Federer. And he did not look
:16:15. > :16:19.ridiculous, he actually beat him. You can always have a bad day, and I
:16:20. > :16:23.think that Roger had a bad day, and his opponent had an amazing day and
:16:24. > :16:28.went very fast on grass. It is hard, you can be one break down and lose
:16:29. > :16:33.this that basically. It was a very special championship last year. It
:16:34. > :16:37.was an incredible result, his opponent was serving and volleying
:16:38. > :16:42.and we haven't seen that on grass from a few years. Cynthia! It was
:16:43. > :16:50.amazing how well he played, that today. -- seems you! And then he
:16:51. > :16:56.lost in straight sets to Philipp Kohlschreiber, trying to play the
:16:57. > :17:00.same style. It is hard to predict that type of result. It just goes to
:17:01. > :17:05.show, Rafael Nadal had an upset, Roger lost in the second round
:17:06. > :17:09.lasted, they will both be very, very motivated to mature that doesn't
:17:10. > :17:16.happen this year. It could be a beautiful semifinal. Noone we
:17:17. > :17:19.mustn't get ahead of ourselves. I had Murray winning it yesterday!
:17:20. > :17:24.Lorenzi has never beaten a top ten player so it is a tough draw for him
:17:25. > :17:29.to face the great federal. It is and he doesn't have much of a grasscourt
:17:30. > :17:34.pedigree. From Roger Federer's point of view he is so comfortable. On
:17:35. > :17:39.Court One of those top guys realise they will have to play a few matches
:17:40. > :17:42.on Court One. You absolutely want to play there when it is hot and sunny
:17:43. > :17:45.because you don't want to be there in the rain, you will have
:17:46. > :17:50.interruptions. That is the beauty of the Centre Court roof. If you are
:17:51. > :17:54.there you can guarantee you will finish match. I think Roger Federer
:17:55. > :18:00.will again be keen to put in a solid performance and get the job done.
:18:01. > :18:04.Incredible, this day of champions, if you look at the record, the
:18:05. > :18:08.number of Grand Slams that they both have one, and Rafael Nadal could
:18:09. > :18:13.possibly catch Roger Federer, we never thought that could happen.
:18:14. > :18:19.He's on 14. And you would not count him out of winning Wimbledon this
:18:20. > :18:22.year. Rafael Nadal could have a double digit number of French
:18:23. > :18:29.opens, I don't know if people realise that. Winning the same Grand
:18:30. > :18:33.Slam more than ten times! In Indian Wells, they played doubles involving
:18:34. > :18:41.Roger, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Just amazing to be
:18:42. > :18:48.part of this kind of era, where we can watch all of them competing
:18:49. > :18:55.against each other. And Andy Murray. It's a long way to go but he already
:18:56. > :19:01.has 12. Wonderful for these two, you cannot count Roger out but he hasn't
:19:02. > :19:06.had the best year. That's right. The problem is when you said above that
:19:07. > :19:11.high there's only one way to go. At the age of 33 -- when you set the
:19:12. > :19:15.bar that high. Perhaps he plays less consistently than in previous years
:19:16. > :19:20.but on this surface is still has a great chance. It is hard for him in
:19:21. > :19:24.Australia, Paris or New York because the other players move so well, they
:19:25. > :19:29.are so aggressive from the baseline, they can take the ball so early on,
:19:30. > :19:34.perfect hands but on grass is the most attacking of any player. He
:19:35. > :19:37.still serves so well and dictates with his forehand, and on the other
:19:38. > :19:43.side of the coin grass is the toughest surface to defend on, and
:19:44. > :19:49.Djokovic, L and Murray rely on the defensive skills. Roger does not. He
:19:50. > :19:52.knows that if he dies he has to rely on the next point. I still think
:19:53. > :19:58.he's got a good chance this fortnight. I need a one word
:19:59. > :20:02.answer. Yesterday John McEnroe said that Rafael Nadal was the best at
:20:03. > :20:09.playing the volley. Lindsay Davenport said what about Roger. Who
:20:10. > :20:14.do you say? Roger, but he's not in the top 100. It's amazing to me that
:20:15. > :20:20.I went down the top 100 and I did not find a genuinely good volleyer.
:20:21. > :20:27.15 years ago, you had Stefan Edberg, Pat Sampras, lots of
:20:28. > :20:34.different people. -- Pete Sampras. I think Rafael Nadal is better at the
:20:35. > :20:40.volley than Roger. Do you think Stefan Edberg will bring something
:20:41. > :20:44.to Roger's game? It is one to watch out for. Is a lovely match ups.
:20:45. > :20:48.Moving to the ladies championship, Serena Williams is the top seed but
:20:49. > :20:51.her build-up has not gone well, she went out in the second round at the
:20:52. > :20:56.French Open and at the weekend she was asked if she had got over that
:20:57. > :21:03.loss. Your defeat at the French Open, how long did it take you to
:21:04. > :21:14.get over that? Who says I am over it! LAUGHTER
:21:15. > :21:19.You are not over it, then? Yeah. I doubt it. Knowing no. -- knowingly,
:21:20. > :21:29.no. I just love Serena. She is so honest
:21:30. > :21:34.all the time. She's probably not over it. I saw her yesterday on the
:21:35. > :21:39.practice court. I think she cannot wait to win her first match here,
:21:40. > :21:43.just to get over it. I think she is playing this much over and over
:21:44. > :21:47.again in her head and this is why she is number one because she
:21:48. > :21:54.absolutely hates to lose. She can't wait to get on the court. She just
:21:55. > :21:57.wants to walk on and win. They say beware the wooded warrior and she
:21:58. > :22:02.was wounded in the French Open. Absolutely. This court is playing
:22:03. > :22:08.differently to the Centre Court. She was surprised by the way the ball
:22:09. > :22:11.was bouncing. It is more sandy so there is much more play and it is
:22:12. > :22:18.slower. That's totally caught her by surprise. She had a very tough day.
:22:19. > :22:22.And her opponent played amazingly. It has happened so many times
:22:23. > :22:27.against top players. And it has happened to her. If we look at her
:22:28. > :22:34.grand slam record, the same age as Roger Federer, but 17 grand slam
:22:35. > :22:39.titles behind the great Martina. I know that you would love to join
:22:40. > :22:42.Martina and Chris Evatt, Margaret Court way out in front because she
:22:43. > :22:49.won the Australian Open ceremony times, but Serena Williams is one of
:22:50. > :22:53.the greatest champions. One appreciated as well, on and off the
:22:54. > :22:58.court, people don't know her so much from the outside, I know her from
:22:59. > :23:01.the locker room, she is so funny. She has a very good sense of humour
:23:02. > :23:06.and she loves to make fun of herself. And they have such a close
:23:07. > :23:10.relationship, with Venus, and they share the same locker room. It is
:23:11. > :23:16.obvious to see how close they are and how much they help each other,
:23:17. > :23:19.in their daily routines. I often see Serena taking food from the
:23:20. > :23:26.restaurant and bringing it to Venus, this is how close they are. It shows
:23:27. > :23:33.you what amazing champions they are both. Venus has won five times the.
:23:34. > :23:37.We will never forget that. And she has had health issues set is great
:23:38. > :23:47.that she is here. Somebody not so close to Serena is Maria Sharapova.
:23:48. > :23:50.There is a rivalry there. If she can't take the farthest point in the
:23:51. > :23:56.locker room, that is where she will be. One locker will be for Serena,
:23:57. > :23:59.the furthest one away will the one where Maria is. It is a tough
:24:00. > :24:08.relationship. 2-mac but that is good. Need that. I love Serena, to
:24:09. > :24:11.be honest. They obviously have some different issues. I think for the
:24:12. > :24:17.crowded makes it more interesting, because on the court they are really
:24:18. > :24:23.there to beat each other! LAUGHTER Absolutely! Maria will be on Court
:24:24. > :24:26.One, which is a disappointment for Samantha Murray, her opponent today,
:24:27. > :24:32.I think she hoped she would be on Centre Court. We can hear from some
:24:33. > :24:36.married now. You've got the right surname for Wimbledon. But you've
:24:37. > :24:39.got a huge task ahead of you, Maria Sharapova, fresh from winning the
:24:40. > :24:44.French Open, how do you feel about everything that will happen in the
:24:45. > :24:48.next two hours? To start with and just really excited about playing
:24:49. > :24:52.somebody on her level, testing myself, seeing what I can do about
:24:53. > :24:57.-- against someone of that standard and to play on a show court is
:24:58. > :25:00.incredible. When you heard the draw, with their mixed emotions
:25:01. > :25:04.because they were easier matches but it is a big occasion. First I was
:25:05. > :25:10.shocked and then I thought it was a dream draw. You don't get the
:25:11. > :25:15.opportunity to play against someone like her. I am used to playing in
:25:16. > :25:20.Challenger Events and this big occasion, it's really exciting. Your
:25:21. > :25:25.physical preparation is done, mentally how do you cope with a day
:25:26. > :25:29.like today? Micah Richards helped me come he has been through these big
:25:30. > :25:37.matches before, he is experienced -- my coach has helped me. I am just
:25:38. > :25:41.looking forward to it now. Maria says she will try to find videos of
:25:42. > :25:47.the way you play, is that strange for you to hear? She will have a job
:25:48. > :25:52.to find them! It is nice to get that. I've been watching some videos
:25:53. > :25:57.of her and I know how she plays. I know what I will do when I play
:25:58. > :26:02.her. She's giving you respect, taking you seriously. What would be
:26:03. > :26:06.a good achievement for you today? I will go out there to try to win. I
:26:07. > :26:13.want to put my game on the court, do my best. I want to show what I can
:26:14. > :26:18.do. You came here last, is it still that same huge sense of occasion
:26:19. > :26:34.before you even play? I think everyone feels that, at Wimbledon,
:26:35. > :26:39.it is such a special event. I feel more relaxed and comfortable now. I
:26:40. > :26:43.did work here one year, after my first year at university I worked in
:26:44. > :26:48.accreditation so it's a bit of a change! A very big day today. Enjoy
:26:49. > :26:54.every second, and thank you for talking to us. SUE BARKER: She says
:26:55. > :26:59.she is feeling comfortable and relaxed, she may feel less relaxed
:27:00. > :27:02.as she walks on court. It's inevitable. Nervous energy is a good
:27:03. > :27:07.sign. It shows she cares about what she's doing. It is important. If she
:27:08. > :27:10.can go there and certainly when you play big matches for the first time
:27:11. > :27:15.it can go quickly so it is in port and that she takes her time, and in
:27:16. > :27:19.between points, has a plan, the way she wants to play, goes out there to
:27:20. > :27:26.really enjoy it. She's got a tough match but what a great opportunity
:27:27. > :27:30.she's got. Nothing to lose. A lot to gain. Irrespective of the result she
:27:31. > :27:33.can hopefully build on this the future. We've got to let you go
:27:34. > :27:36.because you've got a big date on Centre Court.
:27:37. > :27:38.future. We've got to let you go because you've got a big date on Not
:27:39. > :27:45.that sort of date. Another sort of date! With your lovely Wimbledon
:27:46. > :27:52.trophy! Will you walk out with that? My gosh, I'm so excited. I call it
:27:53. > :27:56.my sunshine. When I'm in my room and I wake up and I see the replica of
:27:57. > :28:01.the trophy, however dark it is outside that is my pure sunshine. I
:28:02. > :28:05.know that you will get a huge welcome. Sorry you are not there
:28:06. > :28:08.playing but great to have you back as the reigning champion. We'll see
:28:09. > :28:13.more view throughout the champion. Thank you, and Tim as well. A
:28:14. > :28:19.beautiful sunny day, very warm on the members lawn. Dealers suffer
:28:20. > :28:25.from hay fever? Ali I am fine. The pollen levels have been very high.
:28:26. > :28:29.What are they like, Carol? Very high. Look at that magnificent
:28:30. > :28:36.view. The picnics are out, there is a kaleidoscope of summer colours and
:28:37. > :28:40.a cacophony of noise. It is raised every few minutes is another point
:28:41. > :28:44.is scored on the outside courts with a ripple of applause. The sun is
:28:45. > :28:48.shining, a beautiful afternoon, as we go through the afternoon you will
:28:49. > :28:52.find that the cloud begins to build a little. Still some sunshine coming
:28:53. > :28:57.through it. As it gets thicker from 4pm onwards we are at risk of
:28:58. > :29:01.showers. It's a 40% risk of a shower, like yesterday, it will
:29:02. > :29:06.continue into the evening but diminish with time. We're looking at
:29:07. > :29:10.light winds, temperatures in the low 20s, so feeling nice. And if
:29:11. > :29:18.anything, as we head into tomorrow, the risk of showers and images even
:29:19. > :29:22.further. SUE BARKER: Great news, perfect weather for tennis. Rain
:29:23. > :29:28.disrupted play yesterday, one unfinished match on Court One, but
:29:29. > :29:31.this is Centre Court and Julia Glushko in her first Wimbledon faces
:29:32. > :29:35.Sabine Lisicki, who has the honour of opening up Centre Court in place
:29:36. > :29:39.of the defending champion. She was a finalist last year. Then the battle
:29:40. > :29:45.of the left-handers, Martin Klizan against Rafael Nadal. Rafael Nadal
:29:46. > :29:50.wants his 700th tour victory here today. And then the Serena Williams
:29:51. > :29:55.in her 56 Grand Slam appearance up against a fellow American. And the
:29:56. > :30:02.match to be finished, it was quite eventful, Juergen Meltzer, suffering
:30:03. > :30:06.stomach problems against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, it could be over quickly
:30:07. > :30:10.because Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming out to serve for the match. Roger
:30:11. > :30:16.Federer would be up against Paolo Lorenzi, and then Samantha Murray,
:30:17. > :30:21.her big day, against the champion from 2004, the French Open winner,
:30:22. > :30:25.Maria Sharapova, and then we look at the future because Eugenie Bouchard
:30:26. > :30:32.is tipped to be a feature wooden one, she was semifinalist at the
:30:33. > :30:35.French Open and at the US Open, and against the very experienced
:30:36. > :30:40.Hantuchova. That is what is happening on Court One. That starts
:30:41. > :30:45.at 1pm. At the moment, Lleyton Hewitt, the former champion, has
:30:46. > :30:49.made a great start. He is serving for a double break. That is on Court
:30:50. > :31:10.three. You can watch that on the red button.
:31:11. > :31:18.Nishikori, the highest ranked Japanese man ever, against De
:31:19. > :31:44.Schepper, also on the red button. The early stages of this match on
:31:45. > :31:51.Court number 18, you can follow that online. So much happening here at
:31:52. > :31:54.Wimbledon on day two of the Championships. We are heading over
:31:55. > :32:09.to watch Stanislas Wawrinka, the fifth seed here, up against Joao
:32:10. > :32:30.Sousa, and the commentators are John Lloyd and Andrew Cotter.
:32:31. > :32:45.ANDREW COTTER: He has dealt well with the pressure of these break
:32:46. > :32:57.points. John Lloyd: He was lucky to get away with them, a bit of a let
:32:58. > :33:36.off there. Huge forehands from Wawrinka in this game.
:33:37. > :33:51.There it is, a break for Wawrinka. It is just odd as well, given the
:33:52. > :33:57.previous service It is just odd as well, given the
:33:58. > :34:03.games by Joao Sousa, he really put himself in bother there. But
:34:04. > :34:12.Wawrinka has the break in this first set.
:34:13. > :34:24.That is a joy to watch, that backhand. A one-handed backhand from
:34:25. > :34:39.Wawrinka, for me the best in the world.
:34:40. > :34:48.First double fault of this match. He should get a prize for that, some
:34:49. > :35:01.compensation. There might be a few of those from
:35:02. > :35:34.Wawrinka as well, four aces so far. A good second serve that was, he
:35:35. > :35:41.belted that one. He is very confident on the second serve, he
:35:42. > :35:50.will go for seconds over 100 mph, he has no fear of it.
:35:51. > :36:02.So, a good hold to back up that break of serve, Wawrinka looking
:36:03. > :36:06.comfortable now. Magnus Norman in the bright orange T-shirt, his
:36:07. > :36:14.coach. All fairly happy, just that one game, that aberration from Sousa
:36:15. > :36:18.and Wawrinka took advantage. It is strange because he started
:36:19. > :36:22.confidently and played some very comfortable service games in the
:36:23. > :36:27.corners and then backing up in the next shot with some big ground
:36:28. > :36:34.strokes. He looked very comfortable, then suddenly he throws in an awful
:36:35. > :36:37.game and just handed the break to Wawrinka really. Wawrinka will
:36:38. > :36:43.certainly take those opportunities when they come his way, that was
:36:44. > :36:47.given to him really. I have to stressed that Sousa is a man who
:36:48. > :36:53.comes here with a bit of pedigree on grass. He got to the semifinals in
:36:54. > :37:05.the Netherlands, where he lost to Benjamin Becker, he did take one set
:37:06. > :37:14.off Roger Federer. He seems to be served and volleying more than he
:37:15. > :37:19.ever has done. He has put that into his repertoire, he certainly did it
:37:20. > :37:32.at Queen's and seems to be doing so today as well. Bright sunshine here
:37:33. > :38:08.on Court Two, and new balls for Sousa to stay in the set.
:38:09. > :38:20.At this level, they have such big first serves. He has had two big
:38:21. > :38:22.second serves, Wawrinka, and hasn't made a return on either of them.
:38:23. > :38:52.Just missed that one! What we have had from Sousa, three
:38:53. > :39:04.service holds to love, and one break. It takes just one game of
:39:05. > :39:11.falling off the pace, going to sleep a little bit, and the big players,
:39:12. > :39:12.and Wawrinka is certainly one of those, will pounce, serving for the
:39:13. > :39:40.set. Excellent combination there.
:39:41. > :39:41.Wawrinka, deep serve out wide, then gets round the next
:39:42. > :39:47.Wawrinka, deep serve out wide, then gets round the shot on the forehand
:39:48. > :40:21.and puts his opponent in an almost impossible position.
:40:22. > :40:40.That was a fairly ruthless combination.
:40:41. > :40:58.Wonderful return by Sousa. The pace of Wawrinka's serve was decent, but
:40:59. > :41:00.not the position. Straight into the hitting zone there. Sousa have no
:41:01. > :41:13.problem with that backhand. Ace number five brings up set point
:41:14. > :41:32.for the number five seed. That is the way to do it. Just over
:41:33. > :41:39.25 minutes' time. SUE BARKER: Stanislas Wawrinka makes
:41:40. > :41:43.a good start here at Wimbledon, we will be right back with them in a
:41:44. > :41:52.moment. Lleyton Hewitt is marching on, he has taken the first set
:41:53. > :41:58.against his Polish opponent, 6-2. That is on the red button if you
:41:59. > :42:30.want to watch that. Court 12 is also on the red button,
:42:31. > :42:40.semifinalist, Petkovic, totally in control of her match.
:42:41. > :42:51.COMMENTATOR: The first set comfortably goes the way of
:42:52. > :42:57.Wawrinka. He has a tattoo on his left arm, we got a little short of
:42:58. > :43:15.that tattoo. It fills up almost all of his forearm.
:43:16. > :43:31.Never tried, never failed... That is what he has filled his left arm
:43:32. > :43:57.with. Sousa serving at the start of this second set.
:43:58. > :44:05.He has got a weary air, Stanislas Wawrinka. He looks a beaten man, but
:44:06. > :44:37.far from that. Challenges are available here on
:44:38. > :45:01.Court Two. It was wide. It is not going to get the job
:45:02. > :45:06.done, that mid-court forehand. That is the pressure that, when you play
:45:07. > :45:08.against the top players, the length has to be a lot better than that.
:45:09. > :45:24.Otherwise that is going to happen. He has annoyed himself there because
:45:25. > :45:29.his movement was not good. He looked like he was waiting for the ball to
:45:30. > :46:09.come to him, instead of moving for the ball.
:46:10. > :46:22.Just toying with Sousa. That is the best point we have had so far.
:46:23. > :46:27.Nicely done from both players. That was an excellent volley from
:46:28. > :46:47.Wawrinka, not easy. He developed that one beautifully, nice and deep.
:46:48. > :46:59.He has got to be careful with his Portuguese chuntering because it is
:47:00. > :47:04.a Brazilian in the chair. Sousa speaks six languages so he can throw
:47:05. > :47:05.in another language if he is worried about getting caught saying
:47:06. > :47:44.something! So, Wawrinka at the start of this
:47:45. > :47:59.second set has the break. The boost for the number five seed.
:48:00. > :48:08.It is unfortunate for us that it is in Portuguese. I have got absolutely
:48:09. > :48:19.no idea what he is complaining about. You literally have no idea,
:48:20. > :48:32.John! Literally no idea! That is the best way to deal with it. A winning
:48:33. > :48:35.smile. It cannot be about the calls because there has been no
:48:36. > :48:43.controversy about that. Maybe he finally snapped about Portugal's
:48:44. > :48:52.form in the World Cup. I don't know what he is complaining about there.
:48:53. > :48:55.Wawrinka with the break. Portuguese viewers, e-mail in! I have no idea
:48:56. > :49:27.why he lost it there. He is unhappy with the sky. Wawrinka
:49:28. > :49:39.is playing very quickly between points, taking hold of them very
:49:40. > :49:44.fast. Sousa has lost his rhythm. Riding that wave of disgruntlement
:49:45. > :50:01.from his opponent. I'm still trying to work out what he
:50:02. > :50:06.might have been upset about. He didn't show any discontent during
:50:07. > :50:32.the point. Anyway, serving, break down.
:50:33. > :51:09.That will do nicely. He needs to get himself moving forward again.
:51:10. > :51:30.Another hold to love for Sousa. He is sort of making the cardinal sin
:51:31. > :51:36.of throwing these errors together in bunches. As you said, he has been
:51:37. > :51:43.holding his serve so easily at times and then the two games he lost, he
:51:44. > :51:48.played three almost in a row. Really Wawrinka has not had to do much to
:51:49. > :51:56.break. It's not like he played stunning shots. He has just played
:51:57. > :52:01.solid tennis and he is up one set and a break and he is coasting at
:52:02. > :52:09.the moment because his opponent keeps throwing in these awful
:52:10. > :52:15.service games. Three of the last four years he has gone out in the
:52:16. > :52:23.first round so maybe he was summoning the referee in Portuguese.
:52:24. > :52:31.Anyway, that continues but I think Joao Sousa is more or less happy.
:52:32. > :52:36.But yes, Wawrinka is a different player now, it seems, and I wonder
:52:37. > :52:43.how far he can go in this Grand Slam. It should be able to suit his
:52:44. > :52:47.game, he is serving very well indeed, as we saw at Queen's, and he
:52:48. > :54:30.is looking comfortable here. That last forehand from Wawrinka, it
:54:31. > :54:35.is just that flexibility in movement there. It was a decent forehand from
:54:36. > :54:40.Sousa that attacked him, he should have done better with that but often
:54:41. > :54:47.looks unbalanced on grass. He doesn't recover as well as the top
:54:48. > :54:57.four seeds, for example. That he does as well as anybody in the draw,
:54:58. > :55:04.the first serve. He can find corners all day long, 128 mph too, that is a
:55:05. > :55:25.big serve. The quickest of the match.
:55:26. > :55:39.Serving exhibition towards the end that game. And Sousa is not in happy
:55:40. > :56:04.place. Wawrinka have plenty of time in that
:56:05. > :56:06.want to line up the approach shot on his favourite side, and he didn't do
:56:07. > :57:06.enough with it. Nicely done there from Wawrinka.
:57:07. > :57:12.That sliced backhand from a defensive position, managed to
:57:13. > :57:14.really hit plenty of pace with it and put his opponent back in an
:57:15. > :57:35.awkward place. This was a tough volley, very low.
:57:36. > :58:05.He did well, punched that one away. Good technique.
:58:06. > :58:20.Wawrinka is not at his very best yet, doing just enough.
:58:21. > :58:37.The hold for Sousa, Wawrinka with the advantage in the second set. SUE
:58:38. > :58:46.BARKER:, Let's show you what is happening on Court number three,
:58:47. > :58:50.Lleyton Hewitt breezed through the first set but he is one break of
:58:51. > :58:58.serve down in the second set. If you want to watch it, that is on the red
:58:59. > :59:02.button. Over on Court 17, a bit of an upset here. Jerzy Janowicz has
:59:03. > :59:12.dropped the opening set to Somdev Devvarman of India. You can watch
:59:13. > :59:20.that one online if you want to. Here is Maria Sharapova going through her
:59:21. > :59:25.warm up routine. The French Open champion, and for many people
:59:26. > :59:42.favourite to win another title here. She will be on Court Number One here
:59:43. > :59:44.today up against some -- Sam Murray, a wildcard from Great
:59:45. > :59:47.Britain. Back we go now to court to. Murray, a wildcard from Great
:59:48. > :00:50.Britain. Back we go now to court You need danger pay for that! What a
:00:51. > :01:47.great second serve that was. 74 mph, but the kick on that, the angle!
:01:48. > :01:58.Sousa not getting close to his opponent's service. Three Stanislas
:01:59. > :02:09.Wawrinka service games at the moment, not threatening. There are
:02:10. > :02:13.times when the ball is on his racket, Sousa, and as I say, the top
:02:14. > :02:18.players, they can find a way to get the ball back low, especially with
:02:19. > :02:24.crisp volley in bad at the moment he's just not doing enough with the
:02:25. > :03:11.return. When he does get it back, puts it high.
:03:12. > :03:20.Well done, there. He spotted Stanislas Wawrinka charging and
:03:21. > :03:29.tried to sneak in, Wawrinka, the ball was going very low, and Sousa
:03:30. > :03:42.just spotted that one. Nice angle. Another hold to love from Sousa.
:03:43. > :03:47.Wawrinka Intel to control. Sousa has been broken twice, but every other
:03:48. > :03:52.service game he has had comic he has held to love. It's rather strange.
:03:53. > :03:57.You can see by Wawrinka Bos reaction a few times in the match, he is
:03:58. > :04:02.leading by a set and a break but his opponent has been getting on his
:04:03. > :04:06.case a bit, even though he has been winning comfortably, he's still not
:04:07. > :04:10.feeling the ball right. He's making a field board mistakes which he
:04:11. > :04:15.wouldn't normally do, and he's not totally happy. He is at a set and a
:04:16. > :04:19.break, it is not like he's doing badly, but a player knows when he's
:04:20. > :04:24.feeling the ball well, when he's coming off the strings -- when it is
:04:25. > :04:28.coming off the strings in the right place, when he's moving well. I
:04:29. > :04:37.don't think that he feels at the moment that it is quite fair. He
:04:38. > :04:44.started working with Magnus Norman couple of years ago now. He took
:04:45. > :04:48.something on his forehand, and just played little things and that has
:04:49. > :04:53.made a big difference. There he is come here is a fine coach. He
:04:54. > :04:59.tweaked a few things, as you said, but the main thing was the mental
:05:00. > :05:03.side, I think. He got Wawrinka believing that he could win a Grand
:05:04. > :05:07.Slam. I don't think Wawrinka really believed it himself. You might have
:05:08. > :05:09.said things but deep down he didn't really believe it until Magnus
:05:10. > :05:25.Norman came into his life as his coach. New balls. Wawrinka serving.
:05:26. > :05:58.One break-up in the second set. -- one break up. A second serve ace.
:05:59. > :06:05.Absolutely right to get annoyed at himself. When you get a second serve
:06:06. > :06:14.against Wawrinka you'll have to do something because the first serves,
:06:15. > :06:30.he is getting no joy of those. -- of those. Only two double faults in
:06:31. > :06:53.this match, and both of them from Wawrinka. He has no fear on that
:06:54. > :06:57.third of! 100 and I'm miles an hour, you just served a double fault on
:06:58. > :07:00.the previous point, he gets a second serve and belts it down the middle
:07:01. > :07:03.at 109 miles an hour, you just served a double fault on the
:07:04. > :07:06.previous point, he gets a second serve and belts it down the middle
:07:07. > :07:44.at 109 mph! Lets see if he does the same thing on this one! Just working
:07:45. > :07:50.with the backhand for a shot or two. It's wonderful to watch, that free
:07:51. > :09:10.backhand. Suddenly Sousa is serving to stay in the second set.
:09:11. > :09:17.We have not seen too many of them in this much but that was a beauty! He
:09:18. > :09:21.has not needed to hit too many come he's been so comfortable. This one,
:09:22. > :09:24.unbelievable. The best one-handed backhand in the world. That is an
:09:25. > :10:03.absolute bullet. He's OK. The first slip of the day.
:10:04. > :10:07.It's that sort of area, three or four feet towards the back of the
:10:08. > :10:12.court, which tends to be a bit more slippery. Tomas Berdych underscored
:10:13. > :10:43.yesterday went over three or four times, but that is the first slip of
:10:44. > :10:53.the day. Sousa hanging on, just come in the second set. -- hanging on,
:10:54. > :10:57.just, in the second set. Just mention of Magnus Norman, we saw him
:10:58. > :11:01.in the coaches stand and talked about him being a very good player
:11:02. > :11:05.and is off, a former world and the two and he almost won a Grand Slam
:11:06. > :11:10.in the French Open, and then he made his name as a coach with the Swedish
:11:11. > :11:13.players, Robin so doing, I always like to mention him because he is a
:11:14. > :11:17.like to mention him because he is forgotten figure, it has now been
:11:18. > :11:21.three years since he last played, but he still harbours ambitions of
:11:22. > :11:31.coming back. He's 29, he had glandular fever and it was a vicious
:11:32. > :11:35.bout. He was right up there, challenging the biggest names,
:11:36. > :11:43.Rafael Nadal, federal Mac, and Djokovic, and now he is a forgotten
:11:44. > :11:46.figure in the game. -- Federer. Amazing how that happens, you would
:11:47. > :11:50.expect him to come back from glandular fever but he hasn't been
:11:51. > :11:55.able to. You keep hearing occasional things in the press that he is going
:11:56. > :12:01.to come back at some stage but it's an awful long time to be at, at his
:12:02. > :12:06.age, but Magnus Norman did a very good job with him. And he's invented
:12:07. > :12:11.a new type of tennis ball, new cover for the tennis ball so we will see
:12:12. > :12:17.if anything comes of that. He's branching out. It would be great to
:12:18. > :12:29.see Robin back playing. That one is definitely worth a challenge.
:12:30. > :12:43.UMPIRE: The call is being challenged. It was called in. That
:12:44. > :12:54.certainly was a challenge! Cruel! Mr Sousa has two challenges remaining.
:12:55. > :13:13.Unbelievable! So close to the lines on these second service. He is just
:13:14. > :13:29.fearless. Three second serve aces so far from Wawrinka. That is the sort
:13:30. > :13:34.of area he has thrown in today, he hasn't been pushed enough for it to
:13:35. > :13:38.worry him but he was off balance on that backhand. It was a very
:13:39. > :13:49.comfortable shot, and he shouldn't be making those sort of mistakes.
:13:50. > :13:56.Just shy of one hour on court, and a couple of set points for a two -
:13:57. > :14:40.zero lead for Stanislas Wawrinka. It is good from Sousa. When more set
:14:41. > :14:58.point for the Swiss player. -- one more set point.
:14:59. > :15:09.it was going wide, it would have been a double fault. Just a sloppy
:15:10. > :15:13.shot. That is two, in this game. It looked like he wasn't sat on the
:15:14. > :15:20.ball on his backhand side, off-balance. -- he was not set on
:15:21. > :15:22.the ball. He's put himself in a bit of trouble in this game, and he
:15:23. > :15:50.certainly hasn't needed to. Sousa looking for the confirmation,
:15:51. > :16:03.which came. Set point once again. There it is now. Wawrinka in
:16:04. > :16:07.control, in this first-round match. Again, without being entirely
:16:08. > :16:15.convincing. No, I think he has served very well, I think he is
:16:16. > :16:20.playing OK, Wawrinka, but he doesn't have to play any better than this.
:16:21. > :16:25.His first serve percentage dropped dramatically in that set, from 70%.
:16:26. > :16:34.But he is winning every point when he gets it in. I feel more winners,
:16:35. > :16:37.only four unforced errors, that seems surprising that, I thought it
:16:38. > :16:43.was much more than that but he did what he had to do, played OK, served
:16:44. > :16:50.well, held serve and then was given a break from Sousa and just held on.
:16:51. > :16:55.That is all he's had to do. A long and lively chat going on between
:16:56. > :17:03.Sousa and the umpire. About what, we can only speculate! He's not
:17:04. > :17:07.complaining about the calls because he would have challenged with
:17:08. > :17:11.Hawk-Eye, he would have done that once or maybe twice but he's been
:17:12. > :17:15.going on and on for the last five or six games and I've got no idea that
:17:16. > :17:40.there is any dispute going on. I've got no idea what it's about.
:17:41. > :17:49.Sousa playing in the main draw of Wimbledon for the first time, up
:17:50. > :17:56.against the number five seed, he hasn't really threatened him, he is
:17:57. > :17:58.trailing by two sets and he was -- he will serve to start this third
:17:59. > :19:41.set. If he keeps the belief, Sousa, she
:19:42. > :19:46.could come back a little in this match because Wawrinka isn't playing
:19:47. > :19:59.particularly well. If Sousa elevates his game a little, here. -- he could
:20:00. > :20:03.come back a little, in this match. Sousa holds, he is two sets down but
:20:04. > :20:10.he has taken the first game in this third set.
:20:11. > :20:18.SUE BARKER: stand very much in control. To continue watching that
:20:19. > :20:22.much, it is life on the red button -- Stanislas Wawrinka still very
:20:23. > :20:26.much in control. We are moving away in a moment. That matches online,
:20:27. > :20:30.you can follow and online, not on the red button. Go to the website.
:20:31. > :20:38.We are leaving court to and we are going to Centre Court. An Day two it
:20:39. > :20:41.is a tradition that the defending champion would begin play but Marion
:20:42. > :20:45.Bartoli, as we heard earlier, has retired from the game, yet she will
:20:46. > :20:49.be here, she will walk onto Centre Court once again to celebrate her
:20:50. > :20:54.victory but we are also jettisoned about the life of Elena Baltacha.
:20:55. > :21:00.Marilyn will be joined on court by a nine-year-old who is a pupil at the
:21:01. > :21:05.Elena Baltacha Academy. They will walk on court together soon. I'm
:21:06. > :21:11.joined by Martina Navratilova, nine times champion, a special day for
:21:12. > :21:15.her, and also for Judy Murray, congratulations on Andy's will
:21:16. > :21:20.yesterday, Federation Cup captain and you knew Elena very well. Very
:21:21. > :21:24.well. I watched play her first tournament 20 was mine, I knew her
:21:25. > :21:28.through all her career and for the last two and a half years Tuesday
:21:29. > :21:38.big part of the British Federation Cup team, and for the last two years
:21:39. > :21:40.I have a pattern of her tennis academy. Martina, it is a special
:21:41. > :21:44.day, you've been very much involved in the charity matches for Elena,
:21:45. > :21:48.and you are wearing your wristband. You've beaten me there, you've got
:21:49. > :21:53.to! We are raising money for the Academy. What Elena did, she started
:21:54. > :21:56.the Academy while she was still playing on tour, it's amazing
:21:57. > :22:01.because when we got home we want to rest. Elena put that passion into
:22:02. > :22:05.tennis, the passion she had for tennis, and enabled children from
:22:06. > :22:09.underprivileged backgrounds to play tennis. If we can keep that going
:22:10. > :22:13.and raise money for the Academy, even though Elena is unfortunately
:22:14. > :22:18.not here, her dream lives on. Absolutely. Such an awful time. It
:22:19. > :22:24.is likely that the world of tennis has rallied. They really have. Not
:22:25. > :22:28.just in this country. All around the circuit, the women's circuit, and
:22:29. > :22:57.the men's circuit, everyone has got behind it, it's about raising enough
:22:58. > :23:00.money to keep the Academy going for years to come and making sure that
:23:01. > :23:02.what Elena set out to achieve continues and that we remember her
:23:03. > :23:05.that way. Incredible to think that one year ago she was at Wimbledon
:23:06. > :23:07.and planning her wedding but her body was letting her down, she
:23:08. > :23:09.retired from tennis in November, one month later she married her
:23:10. > :23:12.long-time coach and just one month after that she was diagnosed with
:23:13. > :23:14.liver cancer and sadly lost her fight with the disease on May four.
:23:15. > :23:17.Many charity matches were held around the country including one at
:23:18. > :23:19.Queen's Club. We are here today to celebrate her life. She was a dream
:23:20. > :23:23.to work with. The best athlete I have ever worked with because she
:23:24. > :23:27.was the ultimate professional. She was one of my favourite people in
:23:28. > :23:31.the world. On court she was a really fierce competitor, the heart of a
:23:32. > :23:40.lion, and as a person, kind, funny, selfless, humble, appreciative, she
:23:41. > :23:50.was an absolute gem. She was also quite long time. She was 30 years
:23:51. > :23:54.old, she had just retired and she had so many amazing things that are
:23:55. > :24:01.feet and then we were up against this fight. We lost her one month
:24:02. > :24:04.ago to liver cancer. We've got three Mixed Doubles matches going on at
:24:05. > :24:10.each of the Venice of the three major tournaments. We've got a host
:24:11. > :24:12.of the best British players and the best international players.
:24:13. > :24:19.Everybody has turned out to support this. The Wimbledon champion, Andy
:24:20. > :24:31.Murray! You could see how proud she was,
:24:32. > :24:35.representing her country, how much joy she had on court, she is truly
:24:36. > :24:37.missed. Life goes on, we want to have fun and have a great day for
:24:38. > :24:49.her today. Shameful, get off the court! Who is
:24:50. > :25:31.this joker? Not everyone can do it! Just a gust
:25:32. > :25:34.of wind took it away. I have noticed that you are not grunting today,
:25:35. > :26:00.what is up? We all know that you do it. I've heard some imitations
:26:01. > :26:06.already. Talk to us! SHRIEKING NOISES. Drop it a couple of octaves
:26:07. > :26:12.and lifted up! This is what all tennis players secretly want to do
:26:13. > :26:15.and believe they can do. I have been looking at you and you have such an
:26:16. > :26:39.amazing hat. Can I have one? Game, set and match, Team Ross!
:26:40. > :26:43.Bally was obviously a great person. You can see by the turnout, a lot of
:26:44. > :26:45.the players have managed to make it, and it just shows how well respected
:26:46. > :26:49.she was. and it just shows how well respected
:26:50. > :26:53.she One of the biggest things was a character, her personality, and that
:26:54. > :26:54.is why so many people left. The reaction shows what an unbelievable
:26:55. > :27:06.wife I had, one in a trillion. SUE BARKER: such a fun day, Elena
:27:07. > :27:10.would have loved it and would have been proud of the way everyone
:27:11. > :27:14.turned up. She was such a battle on court. In every part of her life
:27:15. > :27:20.because she had terrible health issues from the age of 19. She had a
:27:21. > :27:25.liver condition from the age of 19, back surgery, foot surgery, some in
:27:26. > :27:27.a different issues to deal with but she kept fighting, trying to get
:27:28. > :27:31.better and putting herself through it, the fact that she made top 52
:27:32. > :27:36.years in a row with all of this going on, it's amazing when you know
:27:37. > :27:40.about it how she got out of bed in the morning, incredible heart, just
:27:41. > :27:46.a huge, huge fight. Prediction about one and she went a little titles, so
:27:47. > :27:50.much to be proud of. -- the British and one. Marion Bartoli will be on
:27:51. > :27:55.court, not to defend her title, but she was talking about the memories,
:27:56. > :27:58.a special day, a nice tradition. Know whether tournament makes you
:27:59. > :28:01.feel more like the defending champion than Wimbledon. That is
:28:02. > :28:06.what makes it so special. When you win the title, make sure that you
:28:07. > :28:10.can play on Monday for a man, to stay for a woman, you get trophies
:28:11. > :28:15.everywhere, your name on the board, it's a fantastic place to be the
:28:16. > :28:19.defending champion. We enjoy it. Knows that so many people are here
:28:20. > :28:21.to salute the defending champion. The Mac it is wonderful that Marion
:28:22. > :28:24.is coming out to do The Mac it is wonderful that Marion
:28:25. > :28:30.is coming out that coin toss and she has a little girl from Elena's
:28:31. > :28:35.Academy with her. What an incredible experience and all through the Rally
:28:36. > :28:39.for Bally events, there were kids from the Academy, they were joining
:28:40. > :28:42.in on the cordon off the court, something they will never forget. It
:28:43. > :28:46.was wonderful yesterday when Andy got a standing ovation, it is
:28:47. > :28:51.something to come back as defending champion, she says she will be in
:28:52. > :28:57.floods of tears. It won't be a pretty sight! It's a fantastic
:28:58. > :29:02.occasion. And a lovely time. In this and a lovely time. In this is a to
:29:03. > :29:05.come out. I think she wants to get some of the cobwebs out from lasted
:29:06. > :29:10.because the nerves got to her, clearly, and no she gets to be the
:29:11. > :29:14.defending champion. A good opportunity for her, and hopefully
:29:15. > :29:19.we will see a great match. We're just going to pause for the
:29:20. > :29:25.announcement of Marilyn, and the young girl from the Academy, on the
:29:26. > :29:29.court. -- Marion. It is traditional for the reigning champion to open
:29:30. > :29:34.the play this afternoon on Centre Court. As you may know, last's
:29:35. > :29:39.champion, Marion Bartoli, has since retired from competitive tennis.
:29:40. > :29:41.Although she is not defending her title, we are delighted to tell you
:29:42. > :29:43.that she title, we are delighted to tell you
:29:44. > :29:51.that will be joining as on Centre Court in a few moments time.
:29:52. > :29:57.APPLAUSE -- that she will be joining us. In
:29:58. > :30:01.May this year, tennis and Wimbledon last one of its most popular
:30:02. > :30:04.characters when the former British and one, Elena Baltacha, passed away
:30:05. > :30:21.from liver cancer. She was just 30 years old.
:30:22. > :30:25.children from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn to play tennis.
:30:26. > :30:30.As a special tribute to Elena, we have invited a young player from her
:30:31. > :30:35.academy, to perform the coin toss before today's opening match. She
:30:36. > :30:39.will be joined in this by our lady's singles champion. Ladies and
:30:40. > :30:50.gentlemen, in celebration of the life of Elena Baltacha, police
:30:51. > :30:55.welcome on court Ellie Miller and ballot Marion Bartoli.
:30:56. > :31:54.APPLAUSE for Marion and Ellie. Here come the
:31:55. > :31:59.players. Sabine Lisicki and the Israeli player stepping on to Centre
:32:00. > :32:04.Court. We are going to stay here for a few minutes longer. We will return
:32:05. > :32:09.to Court One and head off to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Jurgen
:32:10. > :32:16.Melzer in a moment, but just a reaction, a wonderful ovation for
:32:17. > :32:22.mar grand and Ellie. As far as Elena's academy, the reaction, her
:32:23. > :32:24.legacy will live on. It will. The response has been incredible. Not
:32:25. > :32:31.just from Britain and round the world. I am sure all the funds,
:32:32. > :32:37.there is a trustee board, set up to make sure that her philosophy of
:32:38. > :32:40.delivering tennis into areas where maybe it didn't exist and giving
:32:41. > :32:45.children a chance to play will be at the core of it. Hopefully we will
:32:46. > :32:48.make it work for a long time. An academy like that to help kids that
:32:49. > :32:52.don't have a chance is close to your heart. The opportunity for children
:32:53. > :32:57.to be able to play tennis. It is an expensive sport, especially if you
:32:58. > :33:02.are starting up. A safe, healthy environment. I want to make sure
:33:03. > :33:05.there is not a one year deal. I will nudge the tennis committee to pay
:33:06. > :33:10.attention and raise money for it. Good. It is lovely. One of the
:33:11. > :33:14.coaches for the academy is here, Nino her husband is here and
:33:15. > :33:18.everyone needs to rally round him, because he suffered so badly. It is
:33:19. > :33:25.a tough time for him, they were together about eight years, but they
:33:26. > :33:28.were day in, day out, they were so intwined in each other's lives. And
:33:29. > :33:34.planning the next part of it. That is the sad thing about it. They just
:33:35. > :33:38.literally got married when she was diagnosed with cancer, so very tough
:33:39. > :33:42.time for him. I I know he has been buoyed by the incredible support
:33:43. > :33:47.that he has had from everybody and the way everybody has shown their
:33:48. > :33:50.love and respect for her. Marian, in tears there, making the decision to
:33:51. > :33:51.retire is difficult but when you come back you think,
:33:52. > :33:56.retire is difficult but when you come back you I could have been
:33:57. > :34:00.playing out here. I think her body was beat up last year, she is living
:34:01. > :34:02.it up, was beat up last year, she is living
:34:03. > :34:06.it being champion and this is her moment in the sun, even if she is
:34:07. > :34:10.not. Why you -- while you are here, as far as the Championship is
:34:11. > :34:15.concerned the lady, how excited are you that so many new names are
:34:16. > :34:21.emerging but the old guard is there. The new generation is knocking on
:34:22. > :34:26.door, so it is nice to see the new players coming through. The
:34:27. > :34:30.Americans, Townsend and Madison Keys playing great tennis. The new
:34:31. > :34:35.generations are coming and they are here to stay. I am sure Ellie, as
:34:36. > :34:40.they Leigh the court, Marian will be heading up to the Royal Box. Ellie's
:34:41. > :34:46.dad Kevin is in the Royal Box. I am sure she will be inspired by what
:34:47. > :34:52.she will see and will think I want this. If it doesn't inspire her, she
:34:53. > :34:57.needs to get another job. This will do it. That is Marion Bartoli
:34:58. > :35:02.leaving Centre Court. We wish them well. Thank you for your company.
:35:03. > :35:07.Good luck to Andy. And Jamie. Of course. Absolutely.
:35:08. > :35:11.Well we are heading off to Court Number One in a moment, but the
:35:12. > :35:16.practice court, they have been busy and there is Roger Federer, he will
:35:17. > :35:20.be on court later on, on Court Number One.
:35:21. > :35:23.And that is after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga completes his match against Jurgen
:35:24. > :35:27.Melzer. This is what happened last night,
:35:28. > :35:32.when the rain came down, and well, Jurgen Melzer was not a happy man
:35:33. > :35:36.out on Court One. He had a stomach upset. He left the court a number of
:35:37. > :35:41.times. He had led by two sets to one. He wanted the match stopped
:35:42. > :35:44.because of bad light but it was eventually stopped because of the
:35:45. > :35:49.rain. It may only have a few points to go. As they walk on to court now
:35:50. > :35:56.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be serving for the match, at 5-4, so let us
:35:57. > :36:03.join our commentators on Court One, it is Tim Henman and Matt Chiltern.
:36:04. > :36:15.UMPIRE: Two minutes gentlemen. So the conclusion of this first
:36:16. > :36:23.round match between Jurgen Melzer, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, about to get
:36:24. > :36:27.under way. Final set, 5-4. Tsonga to serve. It could be just a single
:36:28. > :36:34.game. Under three hours. Not a long match, for a five setter.
:36:35. > :36:38.Of course Jurgen Melzer will hope it lasts a bit longer. Certainly not a
:36:39. > :36:41.long match to this point, but certainly a strange match. It was
:36:42. > :36:47.very very difficult to predict what was going to happen in the first
:36:48. > :36:51.set. It was Melzer that had the chance, didn't take the chances,
:36:52. > :36:56.Tsonga took a break point opportunity and ran away with it, to
:36:57. > :37:00.win it 6-1 and it was a role reversal in sets two and three.
:37:01. > :37:04.Melzer took the chances. And went up two sets to one. Then we had
:37:05. > :37:07.temperature weird situation with Melzer with the stomach upset,
:37:08. > :37:11.having to leave the court. And kind of doing deals with the umpire.
:37:12. > :37:15.Working out how he was going to get to the loo. Do what he needed to do,
:37:16. > :37:21.get back and continue playing. That is right. He had had his toilet
:37:22. > :37:24.break and when he down 5-2, two break, he pretty much had written
:37:25. > :37:28.off that set. He said I have to go and the umpire said I will have to
:37:29. > :37:31.give you a time violation if you are not back in time. He wasn't.
:37:32. > :37:41.Hopefully he is feeling better today.
:37:42. > :37:45.The umpire there, from San Marino. UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen this is
:37:46. > :37:54.the resumption of a rain delayed match. Mr Tsonga to the right of the
:37:55. > :37:57.chair, leads 5-4, final set. That explains it.
:37:58. > :38:04.Courtesy of the umpire. Tsonga just needs one game to progress to the
:38:05. > :38:10.second round. He will be serving with a break, at 5-4 in the final
:38:11. > :38:15.set. We said, I am sure he has played
:38:16. > :38:18.this game through, in his mind, many times last night and this morning.
:38:19. > :38:23.It will be interesting to see where he goes, with his first serve.
:38:24. > :38:27.If he goes for the big one up the middle. That is the aggressive
:38:28. > :38:30.option, if we goes out wide that is the more conservative option,
:38:31. > :38:34.looking to make the first serve in the court.
:38:35. > :38:42.-- if he goes out wide. It's the fifth meeting between these two men.
:38:43. > :38:46.Melzer has never beaten Tsonga. They played at Roland Garros this year.
:38:47. > :38:51.Second round Tsonga beat Melzer on that occasion, in straight sets. So
:38:52. > :39:02.a more competitive contest here on the grass.
:39:03. > :39:11.So they are going back to the match balls that were in play last night.
:39:12. > :39:18.The ballboys putting away the warm up balls.
:39:19. > :39:27.Court Number One not quite full, but it will be. Every day a sell-out.
:39:28. > :39:30.May have Roger Federer on court number one next. Might be within the
:39:31. > :39:51.next 15, 20 minutes. This was the story last night. 90%
:39:52. > :39:59.of the crowd very much behind the flamboyant Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried
:40:00. > :40:04.Tsonga. So what you say, big up the middle
:40:05. > :40:07.or slow out wide? Big one up the middle.
:40:08. > :40:11.It is what Tsonga is about, isn't it.
:40:12. > :41:03.Going for his shots. Serving for the match. 5-4.
:41:04. > :41:39.The umpire checking that Tsonga did want to challenge. He did question
:41:40. > :41:44.the call. UMPIRE: Mr Tsonga challenged the
:41:45. > :41:47.call. On the left service line. He has decided to challenge, a change
:41:48. > :41:53.of mind. He was given another challenge there by the umpire which
:41:54. > :41:55.almost unencouraged him to think it might have been in, but it was a
:41:56. > :42:37.long way out. Longest rally of the match. Brings
:42:38. > :42:50.up three match points for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
:42:51. > :42:59.UMPIRE: Mr Tsonga has one challenge remaining.
:43:00. > :43:06.Three hours exactly since this match began yesterday.
:43:07. > :43:15.And Tsonga finishes ittoffs with his 20th ace.
:43:16. > :43:23.-- finishes it off. So a brief encounter on Court Number One. Ends
:43:24. > :43:28.in a flash. With Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrating his first round win over
:43:29. > :43:46.Jurgen Melzer five sets, two days, and in the end three minutes this
:43:47. > :43:50.afternoon. A south-west exit for Melzer today
:43:51. > :43:55.but he put up a fight. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be dedelighted --
:43:56. > :43:59.delighted to finish that off and get to the second round. In the whole
:44:00. > :44:05.match he was pretty ordinary. Very up and down with his performance,
:44:06. > :44:10.didn't look like he was timing the ball particular lrly well, quite a
:44:11. > :44:15.few mishits, but through to round number two. And warmly applauded,
:44:16. > :44:24.off Court Number One, stopping to sign a few tennis balls on his way.
:44:25. > :44:28.So a brief glimpse of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out on Court One. They would
:44:29. > :44:33.have wanted to see a little more, but the pay off is that Roger
:44:34. > :44:42.Federer will be coming on to court shortly to play Paolo Lorenzi of
:44:43. > :44:46.Italy. We didn't get the big Tsonga
:44:47. > :44:50.celebration, I guess when you have hit four points it doesn't merit the
:44:51. > :44:55.dance across the grass For the big dance it needs a build up in
:44:56. > :45:00.adrenaline and after three more minutes on the court he probably
:45:01. > :45:05.felt just happy to be through to the next round, where he will look to
:45:06. > :45:11.play a lot better. Now all the kids are coming down and
:45:12. > :45:16.jostling for position. Trying to get a squiggle from the Frenchman on a
:45:17. > :45:25.piece of paper or a ticket on one of these giant tennis balls.
:45:26. > :45:37.So s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has come through, a five setter, over Jurgen
:45:38. > :45:41.Melzer, 6 1, 3 6, 3-6. It was a bizarre encounter with Melzer's
:45:42. > :45:45.illness yesterday and the ebb and flow of the match was extraordinary,
:45:46. > :45:52.with Tsonga coming and going in terms of his form and accuracy round
:45:53. > :45:57.the court and Melzer's problems. Very odd, but in the end they got it
:45:58. > :46:02.done and the line judges are troubling off as well, so their work
:46:03. > :46:09.was short and sweet out here on Court Number One as well.
:46:10. > :46:17.So Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has beaten Jurgen Melzer by three sets to two.
:46:18. > :46:21.In the first round. He has got the rest of the day off, maybe called
:46:22. > :46:26.back into aion tomorrow, under three hours in the end. Four point, nefrz
:46:27. > :46:31.even got going. Didn't score a point.
:46:32. > :46:39.-- Melzer never. Number 14 seed through to round two.
:46:40. > :46:42.And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is now talking to Leigh. A huge battle,
:46:43. > :46:48.quick work today but you must be relieved to get that oh and done
:46:49. > :46:51.with? I am happy, it was not an easy match, it was tough yesterday, today
:46:52. > :47:00.I just came for one game, but I did it well, so I am happy to go through
:47:01. > :47:05.this one, and now I will have a, and I will continue. The way you won the
:47:06. > :47:11.first set, how surprised were you that Melzer came back in that style?
:47:12. > :47:15.Sorry How surprised were you that Melzer came back? Yesterday, I
:47:16. > :47:21.played a good first set, then I had many break points in the first game,
:47:22. > :47:26.and finally, I lost it, and and then, then he played a lot better,
:47:27. > :47:33.he was a little bit more aggressive, he didn't give me time, you know,
:47:34. > :47:39.to, to play, and it was not easy I for me, then I came back, I staying
:47:40. > :47:44.a sieve, and finally, I am here, speaking with you, so it was good.
:47:45. > :47:48.-- I stayed aggressive. It was a quick match but how disruptive is it
:47:49. > :47:53.when you have to come back for a second day when you are looking
:47:54. > :48:00.forward to the second round? It is never easy, because any way, you,
:48:01. > :48:06.you expect a day of rest, and you have to practise, you have to to be
:48:07. > :48:13.focussed on what you do, and that is not easy, so it was important for me
:48:14. > :48:19.to be really focussed, you know, as soon as I was on the court, and I
:48:20. > :48:23.did it. Thank you. Well done. SUE BARKER: Big smile from
:48:24. > :48:27.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he is through to the second round, he will be pleased
:48:28. > :48:30.to have that one under his bell. That was tricky and he could have a
:48:31. > :48:35.tricky second round. He could face Sam Querrey who has to finish his
:48:36. > :48:39.match. That would be tasty, two players who are proven on this
:48:40. > :48:42.surface, he is one of the game's great entertainer, twice a
:48:43. > :48:46.semifinalist, we will try and forget what happened last year when he went
:48:47. > :48:48.out in the second round. He has been to the last four twice here at
:48:49. > :48:54.Wimbledon. Let us tell you what has been
:48:55. > :48:59.happening elsewhere. On court 18 Petkovic, 20th seed. She was a
:49:00. > :49:07.semifinalist at the French Open. She cruised through in straight sets
:49:08. > :49:11.today. 6-1, 6-4.
:49:12. > :49:16.And round the grounds here we go back to Court No. Two where Stan is
:49:17. > :49:20.not far away from completing his victory now, two points away.
:49:21. > :49:28.Against Joao Sousa of Portugal. That match is on line if you want to
:49:29. > :49:33.follow that one. And on Court Three Lleyton Hewitt is
:49:34. > :49:38.involved in a battle. It is in a tie-break. It is ten points all. He
:49:39. > :49:44.was a break of serve but he has battled back. He is known as the
:49:45. > :49:50.Aussie battler. Ten points all. What an important set that will be. Out
:49:51. > :49:56.on court 12 Kei Nishikori in action. Two sets to love up. It is on serve
:49:57. > :50:02.in the third set but what a talent he is from Japan. Seeded 10. We will
:50:03. > :50:07.be keeping an eye on him if you want to follow it it is on line. That
:50:08. > :50:15.made you dizzy! On court 14 Janowicz, what a come back from him.
:50:16. > :50:21.He dropped the first set to Devvarman. He is 4-2 up in the third
:50:22. > :50:25.set. On his way to a 2-1 lead in that one. A semifinalist last year
:50:26. > :50:30.so he is defending a lot of points here. On Centre Court Sabine Lisicki
:50:31. > :50:36.who has the honour on this lady's day here, as last year's runner-up,
:50:37. > :50:43.two love up in her match against. That match is also on line.
:50:44. > :50:48.And I am delighted to say I am joined by Andrew Castle. We will
:50:49. > :50:51.talk a bit of tennis why not talk football as well. We have been
:50:52. > :50:57.following the World Cup. What is that? Today England play their final
:50:58. > :51:01.game in Brazil against Costa Rica. Here at Wimbledon, Gary is with a
:51:02. > :51:05.man who knows what it is all about to manage England. It is Steve
:51:06. > :51:08.McLaren. Later today England play their final
:51:09. > :51:13.game. What have you made of it? I mean, I think, I think it, the
:51:14. > :51:16.nation's in shock, I am in shock, because I think it happened so
:51:17. > :51:21.quickly, it is one game, the second game, and then obviously, Costa Rica
:51:22. > :51:24.winning and we are out. It is normally, I am involved with three
:51:25. > :51:28.tournaments before, you get through the group. You go to the
:51:29. > :51:33.quarter-finals, there is a build up, expectation, or sense of failure,
:51:34. > :51:38.but now it has been just so quick, two games, finished. Why has it gone
:51:39. > :51:43.wrong for England, in a nutshell? Why? I look at England. It is
:51:44. > :51:47.totally different. I think it is trying to adapt to how the modern
:51:48. > :51:51.game is going, and we talk about England two years ago, I remember
:51:52. > :51:55.watching them, it was two banks of four, one compact defending deep.
:51:56. > :52:00.Relying on counter attack, set plays to win games and we did that with
:52:01. > :52:05.Sven in three tournament, and you go out on penalties. Now, and rightly
:52:06. > :52:09.we are trying to adapt with the younger players coming through.
:52:10. > :52:14.Expand the game, open it up and that left us vulnerable at the back. If
:52:15. > :52:18.you don't defend well you don't win tournaments or games. Harry Redknapp
:52:19. > :52:22.said some of the Tottenham players didn't want to play for England on
:52:23. > :52:26.certain occasions, what do you feel about that? It was an extraordinary
:52:27. > :52:31.quote. That is the thing within football, that can be band died
:52:32. > :52:36.about. When you get a hectic schedule and the players are playing
:52:37. > :52:41.in Champions League football and you get friendlies, and they are not so
:52:42. > :52:43.high profile, and they have injuries and the club comes first towards the
:52:44. > :52:46.iped of the season You can understand what Harry is saying
:52:47. > :52:50.about that, but you know, I have worked with England very very
:52:51. > :52:53.closely, over many years and I have worked at club level, and everyone
:52:54. > :52:59.wants to play for their country, everybody. Give us three names. Who
:53:00. > :53:04.is going to win the World Cup? That is a really really tough one. Out of
:53:05. > :53:08.European teams I would say Germany have the best chance. Brazil because
:53:09. > :53:15.they have to, the intensity is there for them. Mens and women's champions
:53:16. > :53:19.at Wimbledon? I think Djokovic can't go for from that. The William, one
:53:20. > :53:22.of the Williams sisters has to be the favourite. Steve, good to see
:53:23. > :53:26.you. -- Williams.
:53:27. > :53:29.He will be enjoying the tennis. He picked Djokovic after the
:53:30. > :53:33.performance yesterday, talking there about the England team and the
:53:34. > :53:36.pressure on them, we have seen it here with Tim and more so with Andy,
:53:37. > :53:41.the pressure that is put on British player, but on the England team in
:53:42. > :53:45.football it is more so. Not only is it pressure, it veers towards abuse,
:53:46. > :53:47.if you look at social media. If you look at Wayne Rooney and the
:53:48. > :53:52.treatment that he gets on line, he is a big boy, he can handle it. He
:53:53. > :53:57.loves his tennis as well. His wife takes the two children out there,
:53:58. > :54:02.and the vitriol poured on is probably borderline illegal at
:54:03. > :54:08.times. Immoral is certainly the way. When you say pressure, it is wrong,
:54:09. > :54:12.they have to go and do it. It is our national game, the beautiful game,
:54:13. > :54:16.but would you want to put yourself into that? Are we paying the price
:54:17. > :54:20.for having a big money Premier League, where not enough English
:54:21. > :54:23.players is developing through the system? I don't know. Two games. 90
:54:24. > :54:27.minutes gone. They have to get something. The Costa re-can manager
:54:28. > :54:32.says England is the mother nation of football. I mean, he is expecting a
:54:33. > :54:36.response, but they are still playing for Secretary-General something
:54:37. > :54:40.against England. We know how hard it is to play anything when it doesn't
:54:41. > :54:45.mean anything. Was it Lampard is captain. And nine changes. It is
:54:46. > :54:50.probably goodbye to Frank. Great servant. I like Sterling though.
:54:51. > :54:53.Absolutely. And did you like Djokovic or Murray yesterday? Who
:54:54. > :54:57.impressed you the most? Dimitrov, because I was on that match on Court
:54:58. > :55:01.One, it was beyond belief. The start to the Championship, a lot of people
:55:02. > :55:06.look in great form. Someone who is looking in great form here, was
:55:07. > :55:10.Stanislas Wawrinka, when we last called in he was only two points
:55:11. > :55:15.away from winning his match. He completed that victory, here match
:55:16. > :55:19.point at 30-40. Seeded five at the Championships but he is the world
:55:20. > :55:25.number three. He is the Australian Open champion. A mild mannered man
:55:26. > :55:28.and he is through. Sop Stan the man is through to the
:55:29. > :55:35.second round. -- so.
:55:36. > :55:39.But we will be heading out to Court Number One, because Roger Federer is
:55:40. > :55:43.coming out here. It is lovely to see him back on court. He will try to
:55:44. > :55:46.want to dismiss what happened last year as well. Like Rafa. It is
:55:47. > :55:52.interesting. Apparently Roger Federer has had a bad six months.
:55:53. > :55:58.His wife has sievely drivered twin, he is at number four in the world.
:55:59. > :56:03.He has beat enMurray. Good run at the Australian Open and it has been
:56:04. > :56:07.a bad year. He still wants to play, he still has an appetite or the
:56:08. > :56:11.game. He thinks he can be a factor, and on a grass court why not? I
:56:12. > :56:16.would expect to see him go deep in the tournament again. Here he is,
:56:17. > :56:21.coming out for the 16th time here at Wimbledon. A huge ovation, there is
:56:22. > :56:26.Federer fans with the caps on, but there is so many Federer fans, he
:56:27. > :56:31.has been a great champion at this tournament. This generation is a
:56:32. > :56:37.joke, isn't it, really. We have Rafa later on on centre we have him on
:56:38. > :56:40.number one. Serena is playing. It is just, this is such a celebration
:56:41. > :56:46.this first week. When it comes down to it you expect in the men's game
:56:47. > :56:52.for the big boys sob standing. You can probably add Wawrinka to that,
:56:53. > :56:55.Dimitrov. Wrong Serb still the boss though. Interesting how Edberg is
:56:56. > :57:01.working with him. Does he need Federer to shorten the points and
:57:02. > :57:07.take the forecourt against Murray, Nadal and Djokovic? Does he need do
:57:08. > :57:14.that. What is Edberg adding. That is the way he played. Roger doesn't
:57:15. > :57:19.have Stefan's volleys. You can ask Stefan eEdberg all day long, have
:57:20. > :57:23.you caught him yet. Has anybody seen him? Hopefully we will see him on
:57:24. > :57:28.Court One. Federer is on Court One and he is a seven time champion but
:57:29. > :57:42.he is keep and eager for title number eight.
:57:43. > :57:47.It is nice having achieved so much here at Wimbledon. It has always
:57:48. > :57:51.been my dream to be able to play here, and let alone to win, and I
:57:52. > :57:55.remember watching berk and Edberg playing each other in all the
:57:56. > :57:58.finals, and just dreaming that maybe one day I could be that guy too.
:57:59. > :58:06.What has it been like working with Stefan. Are you similar characters
:58:07. > :58:11.in way? Somewhat, but different actually. I think I am more
:58:12. > :58:16.outgoing, I like to have a crowd round me, friends and family, I like
:58:17. > :58:20.when everybody is round and it is happening and lively, whereas he
:58:21. > :58:24.needed maybe a bit more down time and time to focus and that, I can
:58:25. > :58:30.switch within a minute, you know, from being like, OK, let's go, I can
:58:31. > :58:36.do that very easily, but it is clearly a pleasure, having him by my
:58:37. > :58:41.side, and getting advice and support from him, very inspiring and
:58:42. > :58:46.motivating. What advice can he possibly give you? It is the little
:58:47. > :58:52.things he doesn't need to teach me how to hit a backhand or forehand.
:58:53. > :58:58.It is when to use which shot and maybe give me that one advice, in
:58:59. > :59:03.the right moment, to give me peace of mind or motivate me in a
:59:04. > :59:08.particular moment. You are 33, do you feel 33? No, because I am 32. I
:59:09. > :59:13.am OK. You are 33 in seven weeks. Seven weeks is a long way away, it
:59:14. > :59:22.is like two weeks is a long way way, I hope I am still here. No, I am
:59:23. > :59:28.aware of it. Do you feel 32 -- 32? File 24. I can't believe how old I
:59:29. > :59:33.am. This career and this tennis life goes by in a flash. It really is. It
:59:34. > :59:37.is fun because it means you are busy, enjoying it but at the same
:59:38. > :59:43.time it is super sad that it is just, it all happens too fast. I was
:59:44. > :59:48.thinking to myself Agassi was 35, 36 when he played you in 2005 wasn't
:59:49. > :59:58.he, so you are going to be round for a long time yet, I would have
:59:59. > :00:04.thought. I don't know how long I will be around. I will push as far
:00:05. > :00:09.as I can. I hope to be successful to the very end. It is fun still
:00:10. > :00:18.playing, because my big goal ten years ago was to look at the
:00:19. > :00:23.longevity, that I play injury free, that I take care of my schedule,
:00:24. > :00:27.that I will still be around 32, 34, and that is exactly what I'm doing,
:00:28. > :00:33.so I am happy that my plan is working.
:00:34. > :00:38.He is still so hungry for the game, and talking about Andre Agassi being
:00:39. > :00:46.36, the game has moved on even from then. It is physically more.
:00:47. > :00:49.ANDREW CASTLE: He had a really bad back last year, there wasn't too
:00:50. > :00:55.much whingeing, but I think he was suffering. He has that polished feel
:00:56. > :00:59.about him, but there is the heart of a fighter and there, and I don't
:01:00. > :01:19.think he would hate it too much if he could win another slam or two,
:01:20. > :01:24.and keep Rafa from taking over his record.
:01:25. > :01:31.SUE BARKER: I think play has just got under way here between two
:01:32. > :01:56.30-year-olds. Your commentators are Tim Henman and Simon Reed.
:01:57. > :02:02.SIMON REID: There will be some good moments however long this match
:02:03. > :02:36.takes. Interesting, Tim, Roger is not
:02:37. > :02:42.rushing into the net. TIM HENMAN: And I don't think he
:02:43. > :02:49.will. The court is not particularly quick. He is happy to stay on the
:02:50. > :02:52.baseline. Happy to stay on the baseline that maybe finish the point
:02:53. > :03:11.at the net, wait for the opportunity to move forward.
:03:12. > :03:23.A little bit of luck, but he has earned that over the years. It is
:03:24. > :03:27.fascinating looking back, he beat Sampras, and then you beat him in
:03:28. > :03:33.the quarterfinals. It was very different, the conditions, and the
:03:34. > :03:35.change has been the grass. It is 100 ascent rye-grass now, which is much
:03:36. > :04:09.tougher, so the ball is much slower. The theme remains the same. On
:04:10. > :04:19.grass, it is very difficult to defend, so you want to be offensive.
:04:20. > :04:23.Whereas nowadays you might set the point up with your server and coming
:04:24. > :04:41.behind the second or third shot. And on the return, probe, and when
:04:42. > :04:46.you see an opportunity, make the move. It is another interesting
:04:47. > :04:56.aspect. When Federer has a target, he can be very good.
:04:57. > :06:03.When his opponent is staying back, he can be a bit more cautious.
:06:04. > :06:10.Interesting to see the Italian making the move forward. I think
:06:11. > :06:15.even this early stage, he realised he wasn't being too at the baseline,
:06:16. > :06:16.and felt like you would take the opportunity of following in a few
:06:17. > :07:03.serves. It is going well, three break
:07:04. > :07:56.pointss saved. Cloudier gallop Eni A pity. It was a terrific athletic
:07:57. > :08:07.stretch on the volley. The crowd have enjoyed it. And even at this
:08:08. > :08:23.early stage, you really feel that it is important for the Lorenzi just to
:08:24. > :08:35.get into this match. A lovely rally, but it is fed who importantly wins
:08:36. > :08:50.it, and you can see how pleased he was at doing just that.
:08:51. > :10:05.He still moves with such grace and balance and speed.
:10:06. > :10:11.A little shake of the head from Fedorov. He doesn't want to accept
:10:12. > :10:53.shots like that. -- Federer. Didn't last long. Never is the
:10:54. > :12:04.fastest serve, but a mph with perfect positioning.
:12:05. > :12:14.Worth a go for Lorenzi? It is about him trying to find the balance.
:12:15. > :12:22.Federer is not going to beat himself. Second ace for Federer, and
:12:23. > :12:47.it is 3-0. You will know an awful lot about
:12:48. > :13:02.Federer. Just to put you in the picture with Lorenzi. He is just a
:13:03. > :13:10.few months younger. 17 slams for Federer, and I'm afraid Lorenzi is
:13:11. > :13:21.in his 13th major and has never won a match. He has a ranking of 83. He
:13:22. > :13:30.had a high of 49. This year he has got to the final in Sao Paulo. He
:13:31. > :13:38.has never won a match at Wimbledon. He has no proven record. It is a
:13:39. > :13:41.tough ask for him today, but he has to go out there and appreciate he
:13:42. > :13:47.has nothing to lose and lots to gain, and try to enjoy the whole
:13:48. > :13:53.process, have a game plan, decide the way he wants to play. If he just
:13:54. > :13:58.goes out there reacting to the way Federer is playing, it will be over
:13:59. > :14:04.very quickly. UMPIRE: Faults. Lorenzi is
:14:05. > :14:15.challenging the call. The ball was called out.
:14:16. > :14:47.UMPIRE: 15-0. Mr Lorenzi has two challenges remaining.
:14:48. > :15:03.He had plenty of time to pick the passing shot.
:15:04. > :15:20.I think this is the classic 1-to punch on the return of serve.
:15:21. > :17:56.That wasn't coming back, and it is 4-1, Federer.
:17:57. > :18:05.Tim, you talked about all the talents that Federer had, and one
:18:06. > :18:09.word I want to focus on is speed. A lot of good judges say to me that
:18:10. > :18:14.they think he has just lost a bit of speed, maybe not much else, but a
:18:15. > :18:24.little bit of speed. I think it is inevitable. It may only be a quarter
:18:25. > :18:29.of a step, but if you are a quarter of a step moving to the ball and a
:18:30. > :18:35.quarter of a step getting back, it all adds up, and he will be compared
:18:36. > :18:42.to the movement of Nadal and Djokovic and Murray. But it is also
:18:43. > :18:47.his balance and his anticipation. And if he is doing too much running
:18:48. > :18:53.out wide and at the baseline, it won't be impacted his game style. He
:18:54. > :18:57.is the one who always wants to look to get to the front and dictate the
:18:58. > :19:06.point. It is an aspect to look out for, but he wants to keep the point
:19:07. > :19:09.is an aspect to look out for, but he wants to keep the points relatively
:19:10. > :19:25.short as he has done well so far here.
:19:26. > :19:41.Again, the timing impeccable. Once the ball gets below the height of
:19:42. > :19:55.the net, it is very difficult to generate much with the volley.
:19:56. > :20:29.He is just starting to fray a little bit, Lorenzi. There is just no let
:20:30. > :21:02.up with Federer. UMPIRE: 15-40. A rare gift from
:21:03. > :21:04.Fedorov, but as it happens, Lorenzi is still down -- a rare gift from
:21:05. > :21:26.Federer. Federer is fed up with himself
:21:27. > :22:22.there. And Federer looking increasingly
:22:23. > :23:01.good. He is just starting to dismantle Lorenzi's game, it seems.
:23:02. > :23:21.Lorenzi, he has never won Grand Slam match. Another gift.
:23:22. > :23:30.CROWD: Come on, Roger! I think he missed a volley in 1986, I think was
:23:31. > :24:11.the last time. Federer started at the baseline, but
:24:12. > :24:22.is coming forward more and more now. Again, good placement from federal,
:24:23. > :24:27.-- Federer, not the fastest, but the placement is good. It is not the
:24:28. > :25:00.first time he has been picked off when he has run forward.
:25:01. > :25:08.He hasn't really won tournaments from the net, so it isn't his
:25:09. > :25:32.natural place. Someone like Ed Berg was so good in the way he covered.
:25:33. > :25:37.The conditions of the game have changed, and sometimes he volleys
:25:38. > :25:41.well, but sometimes he ends up covering the middle.
:25:42. > :25:47.So, there is the first set, 6-1 in 24 minutes.
:25:48. > :25:54.UMPIRE: New balls, please. SUE BARKER: And the Federer fans are
:25:55. > :25:59.delighted with that. If you want to continue watching this match, you
:26:00. > :26:02.can over on BBC One. We are going to be taking you hear over to see
:26:03. > :26:09.Lleyton Hewitt in just a moment. But before that, Kei Nishikori of Japan
:26:10. > :26:18.is through in straight sets against Kenny De Schepper. He is another of
:26:19. > :26:27.those tipped for the top, a real talent from Japan. Over on Centre
:26:28. > :26:34.Court at the moment, Sabine Lisicki in control there. Last year's
:26:35. > :26:40.runner-up is 6-2 and 2-1 up with a break of serve. That is on the red
:26:41. > :26:53.button if you want to follow it. On court 17, Jerzy Janowicz is making a
:26:54. > :27:05.comeback against Farman of India. -- Devvarman. We will keep an ion that
:27:06. > :27:09.out on court 17. We are going to head to court number three to see
:27:10. > :27:14.this man, Lleyton Hewitt, competing in his 61st Grand Slam event, such a
:27:15. > :27:33.battler. He is involved in another battle here. Your commentators are
:27:34. > :27:43.Peter Fleming and one Macintosh. PETER FLEMING: A scoreline of six
:27:44. > :28:03.games to one where he failed to hold serve in the first set. It has been
:28:04. > :28:09.a strange match, because Hewitt really dominant in the first and
:28:10. > :28:21.third sets, but went away in the second set. He had seven set points
:28:22. > :28:24.that he dropped. Both players have slipped a lot on this court's
:28:25. > :28:51.surface. And this guy, Przysiezny, when he is
:28:52. > :29:25.feeling confident, he is a player, but it hasn't happened but often
:29:26. > :29:29.today. We have seen flashes of Przysiezny's brilliance as he again
:29:30. > :29:36.struggles to get a foothold on this surface. The backhand in particular
:29:37. > :29:40.whether it has been crosscourt or down the line, has been impressive.
:29:41. > :30:35.Just not consistent or frequent enough from his point of view.
:30:36. > :30:43.the net, secured his balance, and it brings about great point, that final
:30:44. > :30:47.forehand volley. Still covers the net, as well as
:30:48. > :32:03.most. UMPIRE: Ball was called out. The
:32:04. > :32:10.lines man was unsided. That is why there was no call.
:32:11. > :32:29.The umpire was correct overall. UMPIRE: Advantage, deuce.
:32:30. > :32:39.Pascal is flustered I think. "I don't understand this conversation."
:32:40. > :32:50.Covering the net very well on that occasion.
:32:51. > :33:23.Creating an acute angle on that final finishing volley.
:33:24. > :33:31.Mately Przysiezny shoulds -- holds serve. First time he has done so,
:33:32. > :33:37.four attempts, having failed to hold serve in the course of that third
:33:38. > :33:45.set. So approaching two-and-a-half hours of play now. The fans here, it
:33:46. > :33:51.has been a rather strange game. Hewitt in the aseven Dan city the
:33:52. > :33:56.opening set,/ascendancy, the third set, in coatle control. The second
:33:57. > :34:00.set, Hewitt went off the ball a bit. -- total control. He failed to
:34:01. > :34:04.capitalise on chances and opportunities that he created.
:34:05. > :34:43.So Hewitt to serve, going with serve, second game, fourth set.
:34:44. > :34:48.Przysiezny longing to see if there is chalk on the ball. Seventh ace of
:34:49. > :35:34.the match for Hewitt. He has played that drop shot
:35:35. > :35:45.successfully a few times but that time a dismal effort.
:35:46. > :36:15.Tony Roach, the coach of Lleyton Hewitt. Since 2011.
:36:16. > :36:20.He know has done ten everything in tennis he has done in tennis
:36:21. > :36:52.everything you could think of. Great coach.
:36:53. > :36:58.An unwanted characteristic of Przysiezny's game, the enforced
:36:59. > :37:10.errors during the course of this game.
:37:11. > :37:16.I was surprised to see those 16 enforced errors next to Hewitt's
:37:17. > :37:58.name. I would have thought it was more than that.
:37:59. > :38:16.11th ace of the match for Przysiezny.
:38:17. > :38:30.So remain on serve here in set number four, Przysiezn leading two
:38:31. > :38:38.games to one. Trailing 2-1.
:38:39. > :38:55.So Lleyton Hewitt, 16th straight Wimbledon appearance, the champion
:38:56. > :38:59.in 2002. Engaged in big exchanges from the baseline, that is where
:39:00. > :39:02.Przysiezn has produced some terrific winners.
:39:03. > :39:08.Particularly from his backhand, but those moments of brilliance, an
:39:09. > :39:18.unwanted counter balance have been the high number of unforced errors.
:39:19. > :39:24.Preponderance ed counter balance have been the high number of
:39:25. > :39:29.unforced errors. Preponderance What that graphic doesn't show is that
:39:30. > :39:36.Hewitt produced the most lovely love earlier on in the match.
:39:37. > :39:41.We have seen all facets of his game, outbursts of emotion, some
:39:42. > :39:46.blistering back hands. But during that second, when he
:39:47. > :39:50.conceded those seven set points in the tie-break, just became a bit
:39:51. > :39:52.conservative. So we are on serve, fourth game, fourth set, Hewitt
:39:53. > :40:51.leading 2-1. Well, once again, the drop shot from
:40:52. > :40:57.Przysiezny and as his' tempted to change direction, lost traction with
:40:58. > :41:04.the turf -- as he attempted. Found himself on the court. Tossed the
:41:05. > :41:27.racquet in frustration and exasperation as much as anything
:41:28. > :41:40.else. UMPIRE: Ball was called out. So
:41:41. > :41:43.Hawk-Eye called into action here. What will the verdict be? The replay
:41:44. > :42:52.because it was in. Przysiezny having conversations with
:42:53. > :42:54.his inner voice. Mutterings occurring in his mind. He
:42:55. > :43:14.needs to focus on the task at hand. That was the third double fault of
:43:15. > :43:17.the match for Hewitt. The second was to concede the second set tie-break.
:43:18. > :43:22.16-14. A bruising exchange to conclude that
:43:23. > :43:46.second set. The racquet being used as a
:43:47. > :43:50.basketball from Przysiezny. There have been many moments in the match
:43:51. > :44:09.where it has been all-or-nothing, in his strokeplay and shot selection.
:44:10. > :44:19.Przysiezny is going through a bad moment. Can Hewitt capitalise? He
:44:20. > :44:23.looks to close out this first round match, which remains on serve here
:44:24. > :44:30.in set number four. More than two-and-a-half hours on
:44:31. > :44:33.court now. There has been a topsy-turvy match up tow this point.
:44:34. > :45:13.-- up to this point. Hewitt covering the net very
:45:14. > :45:17.effectively. Wonderful racquet head control.
:45:18. > :45:23.Again, firing himself up, giving the crowd something to cheer about.
:45:24. > :45:47.The spectators have been a source of inspiration for Hewitt.
:45:48. > :45:56.His body language displays signs of deflation, despondency in fact. This
:45:57. > :46:05.man's play, aside that that let up in set number two, he has been of a
:46:06. > :46:10.consistently high level. Oh, fantastic.
:46:11. > :46:22.A hyped up Hewitt has fashioned three break points. He appeared to
:46:23. > :46:27.have done enough, but look at the retrieval skills. The racquet head,
:46:28. > :46:33.brilliant from Lleyton Hewitt. And that is what it means to him.
:46:34. > :47:09.Big moment now, in the course of this match.
:47:10. > :47:37.Still break point. Both players have struggled with
:47:38. > :47:39.their footing. Particularly outside the tram lines where the grass is a
:47:40. > :48:21.bit greener. Break point number four.
:48:22. > :48:26.Lleyton Hewitt's mother in the yellow T-shirt. Applauding her son's
:48:27. > :48:35.efforts. His father on the left in the baseball cap.
:48:36. > :48:41.12th ace. 124mph. Out wide to the backhand side from
:48:42. > :50:01.Przysiezny. Hewitt prevails to bring about his
:50:02. > :51:05.fifth break point opportunity. Hewitt. Hewitt leads 3-2. Intark
:51:06. > :51:08.that looked long and that gives Leighton the break. We will be back
:51:09. > :51:14.with this match in a moment. Let us show you what has been happening
:51:15. > :51:21.elsewhere. Radwanska is through, out on court two. She won, runner-up two
:51:22. > :51:26.years ago, semifinalist last year, losing 9 listen 2347 the third to
:51:27. > :51:31.Sabine Lisicki. She is through, the opening round.
:51:32. > :51:37.-- 9-2. That was a match finished and this is Caroline Wozniacki the
:51:38. > :51:48.16th seed, who has gone through against Peer. The formed number one
:51:49. > :51:52.will face broady I in round two. -- Broady. Sabine Lisicki had the
:51:53. > :52:00.honour of opening Centre Court as the runner-up last year, she wasn't
:52:01. > :52:06.on long. So Sabine Lisicki became the first German woman through to a
:52:07. > :52:11.Grand Slam final since Steffi Graf last year. Welcome to Centre Court
:52:12. > :52:16.this year. Those are some results so let us update court 17th. We have
:52:17. > :52:21.been following this. Janowicz, seeded 15. It is going the distance.
:52:22. > :52:25.It is in the fifth and final set. If you want to watch that it is live on
:52:26. > :52:31.the red button. That is on court 17. Over on Court
:52:32. > :52:38.One, Roger Federer in action, and going very well indeed against Paolo
:52:39. > :52:42.Lorenzi, 6-1, 4-1 with so the seven time champion in command on Court
:52:43. > :53:32.One. We are heading back to Court No. Three.
:53:33. > :53:41.One wonders whether Przysiezny has given up in some part of his mind
:53:42. > :53:44.here, his body language doesn't an -- appear to be very positive.
:53:45. > :53:57.Rather lacklustre behind the baseline.
:53:58. > :54:09.Well, very strange, in terms of what he chose to do during that point.
:54:10. > :54:10.This is a give away point here, this is seriously, you don't do that when
:54:11. > :54:29.you are winning. He has given up the ghost here,
:54:30. > :54:34.mentally. He is in the middle of a horror
:54:35. > :54:40.stretch is Przysiezny. He entered this first round match up
:54:41. > :54:47.on Court No. Three, looking to end a 13 match losing streak. His only win
:54:48. > :54:53.in 2014 came in the first round of the Australian Open. So really, he
:54:54. > :55:00.has got out of the winning habit. Fought tooth and nail to take the
:55:01. > :55:01.second set on a tie-break. Just gave up, that previous service game
:55:02. > :55:27.against Hewitt. Produces his 13th ace of the match.
:55:28. > :55:32.He is a break down. Hewitt is just, the way he bend to
:55:33. > :55:35.get those returns of serve back in play, somehow. Makes his opponent
:55:36. > :56:13.play one more shot. Well, a game where he held serve to
:56:14. > :56:18.love. Really efficient fashion, but he is
:56:19. > :56:21.still a break down, and during this change of end now, one wonders what
:56:22. > :56:27.must be going through his mine. There was a real let down mentally
:56:28. > :56:30.on Hewitt's previous service game from Przysiezny, now he has to
:56:31. > :56:34.summon up resilience, some belief and just try and hang in a point at
:56:35. > :56:37.a time if he hopes to turn this round and take to it a fifth and
:56:38. > :56:41.deciding set. Well also from his side he has to regroup, because he
:56:42. > :56:47.lost it there on that service game, to play that shot between his leg,
:56:48. > :56:51.when he had plenty of time to do, percentage shot, and Lleyton Hewitt
:56:52. > :56:57.saw that as well, so all that does is just fuel Lleyton Hewitt's fire
:56:58. > :57:02.up. He thinks I have this fellow now, he is sort of mentally just
:57:03. > :57:06.playing sloppy shots and losing heart, and that just, when you play
:57:07. > :57:10.against someone like Lleyton Hewitt. This shot here, this is ridiculous.
:57:11. > :57:17.It is fun to watch it but it is stupid. If you are a coach you would
:57:18. > :57:23.go, you don't hit that shot up less you are up. That was not good. This
:57:24. > :57:30.is Wimbledon, this is a Grand Slam after all, and that is inexcusable.
:57:31. > :57:36.His third consecutive appearance here at Wimbledon. Made the second
:57:37. > :58:13.round on both previous occasions. In trouble here.
:58:14. > :58:20.Excellent rally there. Looks like he's engaged back in the battle
:58:21. > :58:49.again there, with that point. At least he is focussed again.
:58:50. > :58:55.Stark contrast to Przysiezny. The intensity level of Hewitt has
:58:56. > :59:47.remained height throughout. sets to one, you can't make an error
:59:48. > :00:53.like that. A rare trip forward to the net for
:00:54. > :01:37.serve and volley. Oh, overruled!
:01:38. > :01:47.UMPIRE: Challenging the ball on the left. The ball was called in. Replay
:01:48. > :02:13.the point. Mr Przysiezny has one challenge remaining.
:02:14. > :02:25.Hewitt has out a few problems this afternoon with his ball toss. That
:02:26. > :02:28.was a terrible mistake. That second serve was just waiting to be
:02:29. > :02:32.attacked. Straight on to his forehand, 88. You just can't miss
:02:33. > :02:53.those sort of returns. Lleyton Hewitt's serve has gone off
:02:54. > :02:59.this game. It is a huge opportunity. That is in. A very impressive return
:03:00. > :03:04.to bring about the second deuce. That is what he has got to do. You
:03:05. > :03:18.have to make sure you don't miss it. UMPIRE: Let, first service.
:03:19. > :03:20.Not getting any punch in the server the moment. It is likely is getting
:03:21. > :03:43.a little bit tight, Lleyton Hewitt. He made sure he got batting, slowed
:03:44. > :04:14.it down, 78 miles an hour. -- got that in.
:04:15. > :04:18.Another unforced error on the backhand wing from Przysiezny means
:04:19. > :05:35.he is serving to stay in the match. He just seems to wander in and out,
:05:36. > :05:41.sometimes brilliant, just looks so good, and then throws in a couple of
:05:42. > :05:55.points where you wonder, is this the same player?
:05:56. > :07:28.117 mph, second serve, he goes for. Unpredictable.
:07:29. > :07:32.Hewitt couldn't really go at that forehand, miss timed it a little
:07:33. > :07:56.bit. That looked like it bounced twice
:07:57. > :08:21.before it hit the net! Followed by stroke play like that.
:08:22. > :08:31.He has so much talent, but you can't have this up and down to Grand Slam,
:08:32. > :08:39.you have to be more solid. And again, that really is a bit extreme,
:08:40. > :08:43.but it has been the match in microcosm from Przysiezny's point of
:08:44. > :09:04.view. Brilliance followed by unforced error is.
:09:05. > :09:53.121 miles per hour on a second serve ace at deuce to stay in the match.
:09:54. > :09:59.on it in a flash. Poor shot selection there. That is the wrong
:10:00. > :10:02.position to player drop shot. Lleyton Hewitt had about half an
:10:03. > :10:14.hour to spare getting to that ball. He is just not thinking.
:10:15. > :10:24.And Lleyton you know is thinking of finishing this game. When you are
:10:25. > :10:39.playing somebody who is so unpredictable, you just don't know.
:10:40. > :10:47.So, Przysiezny ultimately holds serve, but Lleyton Hewitt still has
:10:48. > :10:53.the opportunity to close out this match. He leads 5-4 and by two sets
:10:54. > :10:59.to one approaching three hours of play.
:11:00. > :11:12.The outcome of this match to a large extent in his hands now. His service
:11:13. > :11:16.game has been very solid. It will be interesting to see if he takes the
:11:17. > :11:20.pays off his first serve and makes sure he gets a large percentage in
:11:21. > :11:24.rather than going for cheap point, and keep his opponent from attacking
:11:25. > :11:30.his second serve, because you just don't know what he is going to do.
:11:31. > :11:33.It is bizarre playing against someone like that, because the
:11:34. > :11:39.rhythm is not there, and you can't read his game. I don't think he
:11:40. > :11:45.knows what he's going to do. It's not like he has a plan. I think the
:11:46. > :11:49.ball just comes and he just goes for it one way or the other, and if it
:11:50. > :11:56.works, it works, and if it doesn't, next point. So, Lleyton Hewitt
:11:57. > :12:27.preparing to serve for the match. He leads 5-4 and by two sets to one.
:12:28. > :12:48.Well wide. He is looking at his racket questioningly.
:12:49. > :13:20.UMPIRE: The ball was called in. 30-0. No challenges remaining.
:13:21. > :13:48.So, three match points the Lleyton Hewitt.
:13:49. > :14:02.UMPIRE: Game, set and match Hewitt. Celebrations abound the late in
:14:03. > :14:09.Hewitt who has secured his passage through to the second round courtesy
:14:10. > :14:16.of a 4-macro-set win over Michal Przysiezny. Lleyton Hewitt is
:14:17. > :14:23.through to the second round, to the delight of the Aussie contingent
:14:24. > :14:27.here on Court three. SUE BARKER: Well, those
:14:28. > :14:32.here on Court three. SUE BARKER: Well, those Aussie fans,
:14:33. > :14:36.Lleyton Hewitt has given them so much to cheer about over the years,
:14:37. > :14:40.now 33 years of age, he is always tough to beat and always good on a
:14:41. > :14:47.grass court. A former champion here. So he could face Jerzy Janowicz in
:14:48. > :14:53.the next round, who is currently serving for the match. What a treat
:14:54. > :14:59.that would be in the second round. So, we move away from court number
:15:00. > :15:01.three, and we head over to Centre Court in a moment to see the current
:15:02. > :15:34.world number one. Well, he is the current world number
:15:35. > :15:36.one, but ceded two at the Championships, because grass court
:15:37. > :15:46.performances recently are taken into account. He is under against Martin
:15:47. > :15:52.Klizan, so let's join this match with Peter Fleming and Andrew
:15:53. > :15:58.Castle. ANDREW CASTLE: That is not the first
:15:59. > :16:12.speedy forehand we have seen from Martin Klizan. He hit a 100 mph
:16:13. > :16:14.return off Nadal's second serve. Here we are, 12 minutes played, and
:16:15. > :16:40.it has been great. PETER FLEMING: Klizan appears to
:16:41. > :16:46.come to come into this game quite determined. Last year at the French
:16:47. > :16:51.Open, on the clay that Nadal has dominated in Paris, the nine of the
:16:52. > :17:02.ten years that he has played there, Klizan got a set. So he has gone toe
:17:03. > :17:08.to toe in Nadal's backyard and picked up a set. In fact, it was the
:17:09. > :18:05.first set. Nadal had to work hard to get into that match and then win.
:18:06. > :18:16.The double fault there may illustrate that Rafa is very well
:18:17. > :18:19.aware of the threat that Klizan presents, so maybe he is over
:18:20. > :18:46.pressing. They are certainly going to take to
:18:47. > :19:09.Martin Klizan, this crowd, especially if he can get ahead.
:19:10. > :19:23.First ace. That's not fair. Why not? I don't know. You want Klizan
:19:24. > :19:31.to get ahead here, to make a match of this?
:19:32. > :19:34.You know Rafa can grind you down from the back of the court, but when
:19:35. > :20:06.he's heating aces as well. He has poked it long. He has already
:20:07. > :20:12.had joy disguising a shorthand drop shot. It is the pressure that Nadal
:20:13. > :20:37.puts on you to hit the perfect approach shot.
:20:38. > :20:52.UMPIRE: Game, Nadal. Nadal leads two games to one, first
:20:53. > :20:58.set. What an intriguing start. Rafael Nadal comes in as a
:20:59. > :20:58.favourite, obviously the man with a reputation,
:20:59. > :21:01.Rafael Nadal comes in as a favourite, obviously the man the
:21:02. > :21:07.charisma, all of that, but you still have to go out there and get the job
:21:08. > :21:15.done. The last three grass court matches that he has played, he has
:21:16. > :21:26.lost. In 2012, he lost to Lukas Rosol, you remember that. Last year,
:21:27. > :21:31.Steve D'Arcy. It was a first ever Grand Slam first round loss to
:21:32. > :21:40.Nadal. And then he lost to Dustin Brown of Germany. So, Rafa would
:21:41. > :21:44.have felt quite a bit of trepidation coming into this match, undoubtedly.
:21:45. > :21:49.He looks ready sharp, though, thus far. Klizan came out really
:21:50. > :21:58.slugging. UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly,
:21:59. > :22:07.please, ladies and gentlemen. Time. As this first set wears on,
:22:08. > :22:13.hopefully Nadal will relaxed a little bit more and settle into what
:22:14. > :22:16.he wants to do. Can Klizan keep up this sort of intensity for an
:22:17. > :22:24.extended period of time? UMPIRE: Please take your seats.
:22:25. > :22:52.Players are ready. So, game four. Each game has had break points.
:22:53. > :22:56.I think that might be worth a challenge. At nothing. I think it
:22:57. > :24:12.was an overrule. That was a Dimitrov -like move, it
:24:13. > :24:58.was Djokovic -esque. Very quick around the court.
:24:59. > :25:06.today that Klizan has taken the backhand up to the line. Rafa
:25:07. > :25:25.nowhere to be seen. Not an easy shot.
:25:26. > :25:35.UMPIRE: Two games all, first set. He looks pretty confident. How long can
:25:36. > :26:30.he last at this pace? He looks to have a very clear game
:26:31. > :26:37.plan. That is Martin down, a fine career, excellent strategy. Nadal
:26:38. > :26:42.always move to try to get that forehand.
:26:43. > :26:59.UMPIRE: Out. He will just skip to his right, our
:27:00. > :27:04.left as we look down the court. Klizan perhaps looked to punish the
:27:05. > :27:57.forehand early in the rally, the gap that Nadal leaves.
:27:58. > :28:08.Well, that's time, Nadal quick to react. He did actually get it,
:28:09. > :28:13.but... It is a long way down, isn't it? The knee is not perhaps perfect
:28:14. > :29:12.these days, 28 years of age. UMPIRE: Nadal leads three games to
:29:13. > :29:21.two, first set. Martin Klizan, six foot three, a
:29:22. > :29:25.high of 26 in the world last year. He has won couple of titles, Saint
:29:26. > :29:41.Petersburg in 2012. He was named ATP new, of the year. He became the
:29:42. > :29:46.first Slovakian since Dominic Hrbati. He had an injury and
:29:47. > :29:53.Fountains of lower down in the rankings than he wanted to be this
:29:54. > :29:56.year. He made the third round of the Australian Open this year, and beat
:29:57. > :30:01.Kei Nishikori at the French Open. Seppi is clearly confident. Caught a
:30:02. > :30:10.finalist in Eastbourne. 24 years old.
:30:11. > :30:16.UMPIRE: Time, please. He is unafraid of the reputation who
:30:17. > :30:19.is facing. Unafraid, perhaps. But equipped to master it? That is
:30:20. > :32:49.another matter. bearing as Carroll Cichiera and
:32:50. > :33:01.others from that part of the world. That was a miraculous shot.
:33:02. > :33:23.He is getting quite a bit of joy out of attacking the Nadal forehand.
:33:24. > :33:34.I think the crowd are delighted to see Klizan come out here and go toe
:33:35. > :33:38.to toe with Nadal. So often the big names come out here with such an
:33:39. > :33:42.advantage over the lower ranked players because they have played so
:33:43. > :33:44.many more times in this environment, but Klizan seems to be
:33:45. > :35:08.enjoying himself. anyone in the game today. It comes
:35:09. > :36:25.in, says, pass me, go on. UMPIRE: Correction, replay the
:36:26. > :36:32.point. There is normally somebody who feels hard done by hand on this
:36:33. > :36:33.occasion it will be Martin Klizan. He had a wonderful ball on the
:36:34. > :37:05.baseline. Yeah, there you go. The lines and 50
:37:06. > :37:21.millimetres thick, everywhere but the baseline, where they are 100.
:37:22. > :37:55.He is not going to let Nadal camp out in this backhand corner.
:37:56. > :38:08.UMPIRE: New balls, please. Brilliant 34 minutes, really enjoyable first
:38:09. > :38:16.round match. Rafael Nadal not used to winning matches on grass, even
:38:17. > :38:23.though here's the Wimbledon champion. It must be difficult to be
:38:24. > :38:27.one of the top three, four, five guys in the world, every single
:38:28. > :38:33.player that you play against, these highly tuned athletes coming at you
:38:34. > :38:38.with nothing to lose. Sure it must be and the thing that really
:38:39. > :38:43.impresses me is how Ned Dell comes out in such an emotional state every
:38:44. > :38:51.single match he plays because it requires such a huge amount of
:38:52. > :39:02.effort to play the way that he does. And he almost never seems to suffer
:39:03. > :39:10.a let down. A let down or indeed an emotional meltdown, because when you
:39:11. > :39:18.get so into it, you can overheat, but he seems to manage it perfectly
:39:19. > :39:26.time and time again. It is a hot day in here today. It must be 24, 20
:39:27. > :39:32.five Celsius. It feels around about that at the moment. The possibility
:39:33. > :39:44.of showers later on, but my old and scattered, so hopefully Wimbledon
:39:45. > :39:51.will miss them, unlike last night. Martin Klizan of Slovakia, top man
:39:52. > :39:53.from that country, from the biggest city in his country. Serving with
:39:54. > :42:45.new tennis balls here. It is another fine service game with
:42:46. > :42:51.Martin's coach looking down on. Parity after 38 minutes. Anybody in
:42:52. > :42:57.the Klizan camp would have taken that. Ned Dell has been serving a
:42:58. > :43:01.lot of the backhand. It would strike me that the backhand is pretty
:43:02. > :43:07.consistent on the return, doesn't need to take a big swing like Novak
:43:08. > :43:23.Djokovic. Nadal has got a match on his hands at the moment.
:43:24. > :43:30.Well, the first slip for Klizan today. When you do go outside of the
:43:31. > :44:17.tramlines, it is still very green. It is always the move recovering
:44:18. > :44:27.back to the middle of the court, isn't it? It is that push. It is
:44:28. > :44:58.scary. It looks like he didn't get into trouble there but it was close.
:44:59. > :45:39.The second serve was short and slow, 81 mph, and duly punished.
:45:40. > :45:50.The clarity of the game plan from Klizan is impressive, but so is the
:45:51. > :45:56.execution of that game plan. Intelligent man. Speaks six
:45:57. > :46:17.languages, brings that intelligence to his play.
:46:18. > :46:32.Rafael Nadal will want that volley back, that was a terrible one. Yes,
:46:33. > :46:34.but Klizan is impressing with how he's getting around the court. That
:46:35. > :47:14.is a nervous volley. This huge surprise. The volley was a
:47:15. > :47:20.shocker on the panel to in point. The second serve would signify
:47:21. > :47:30.something of a crisis. -- the penultimate point. We talk about the
:47:31. > :47:37.jaw-dropping exploits of Rafael Nadal with his nine French Opens of
:47:38. > :47:44.course but Klizan has played a lot of matches this year. In Munich he
:47:45. > :47:48.qualified in one tournament, eight victories in nine days so he is
:47:49. > :47:53.hardened for battle and he will expect to be tested in this coming
:47:54. > :48:03.game, but he is a thankful recipient of that bonus there. I didn't see
:48:04. > :48:09.that volley quite as harshly as you did. I thought perhaps Nadal thought
:48:10. > :48:25.he needed to hit it into the open court, Klizan got up there very
:48:26. > :48:32.quickly. The double fault is a bit of a shocker. Well, you know? That's
:48:33. > :48:39.why they play the matches. They are not played on paper. You have got to
:48:40. > :48:43.get the job done. Fergus Murphy just saying to Rafael Nadal saying, get
:48:44. > :48:51.on with it. Between games, you have got to be ready. Perhaps a little
:48:52. > :48:53.shell-shocked there. Nadal needs to break, otherwise the first set is
:48:54. > :49:57.gone. You are right, Andrew, he is
:49:58. > :49:58.certainly going to put as much pressure on Klizan as possible in
:49:59. > :50:45.this situation. Klizan mishit a couple of backhands
:50:46. > :51:23.but fortuitously they both landed in the court.
:51:24. > :51:28.That was a bold second serve. He has got such a clear idea of what he
:51:29. > :52:01.wants to do. Take that! Martin Klizan, number 51
:52:02. > :52:09.in the world, 50 places between him and the guy he is playing, but he
:52:10. > :52:16.has taken the first set 6-4. He ended the set the same way he began
:52:17. > :52:20.it, aggressively. He has taken a set from Rafael Nadal before at the
:52:21. > :52:27.French Open so perhaps this won't surprise him. Now we welcome to the
:52:28. > :52:33.commentary John McEnroe. Something going on here? How are you? I'm
:52:34. > :52:42.great. I heard you a bit last night in the Andy Murray documentary,
:52:43. > :52:48.really nicely done. Thank you. We normally wave at each other across
:52:49. > :52:55.the court, don't we? I was doing Roger's match, obviously his wasn't
:52:56. > :53:04.competitive, then I see Klizan... How do you pronounce it? We have
:53:05. > :53:11.been saying Klizan. At the break point he stood way over Nadal daring
:53:12. > :53:16.him, and he got the double faults, then suddenly he thought Rafael
:53:17. > :53:22.Nadal will pick it up, 0-30, this guy is going to get tight. He is
:53:23. > :53:29.looking dangerous. What did you make of the Nadal volley that played
:53:30. > :53:39.Klizan in? I watching you with John Inverdale yesterday saying Nadal has
:53:40. > :53:43.the best volleys in the game. I do think he has tremendous volleys. The
:53:44. > :53:48.thing is that his movement is so keen to him that when he is not
:53:49. > :53:56.confident with that, the rest of his game suffers, but make no mistake,
:53:57. > :54:05.this guy is a dangerous first-round opponent. He didn't qualify in the
:54:06. > :54:09.Australian com he got in with the lucky loser and you can see his
:54:10. > :54:15.confidence is starting to come back. Missing time with some injuries, and
:54:16. > :54:22.this guy is like back to work. I think he got to number 30 in the
:54:23. > :54:27.world. It was 26 in the world, and one qualifying in Munich this year.
:54:28. > :54:32.He has been through the ringer a bit, I think he is better than he
:54:33. > :54:37.has ever been right now and that makes it a handful for the Dell. It
:54:38. > :54:43.has to be a great advantage for him from a physical standpoint playing
:54:44. > :56:02.on grass rather than clay. Let's see what happens from here.
:56:03. > :56:11.UMPIRE: Correction, first serve. It looked to be clearly in, no doubt
:56:12. > :56:28.about it. The linesman called it out, quickly overruled.
:56:29. > :56:33.That is the shot that has brought him so much joy so far today,
:56:34. > :57:08.attacking Nadal's forehand. I would use that serve more and
:57:09. > :58:25.more. Dare him to go big, he is a streaky player. Open the court up.
:58:26. > :58:34.These guys, Carlos Costa, has been with him for years, uncle Tony...
:58:35. > :58:38.Worried because the results have not been there for him on this surface
:58:39. > :59:07.in the last couple of years. He could play Rosal. A succession of
:59:08. > :59:30.inspired opponents to get rid of first.
:59:31. > :59:45.The splits again. He is OK. I think that is smart played by Nadal to
:59:46. > :59:51.bring him forward, use that slice. He is not that comfortable at the
:59:52. > :00:25.net, he much prefers to dictate off the ground with the forehand.
:00:26. > :00:31.that serve. He doesn't like to change. When he gets something in
:00:32. > :01:33.his head he likes to stick with it. Nothing he can do there.
:01:34. > :01:49.That is really strong! It is. Guess who, by the way? David Beckham?
:01:50. > :02:00.LAUGHTER . You've got me. Who is it? Hugh
:02:01. > :02:09.Jackman. Is that him? The Mac I would not have thought that. We're
:02:10. > :02:20.not convinced. I might have to challenge! We will get Hawk-Eye
:02:21. > :02:21.Ahmad! -- we will get Hawk-Eye on that. That is the way the match
:02:22. > :04:02.began! He thought that was going to go
:04:03. > :04:36.along and did not even swing at it. Unbelievable! It is incredible, that
:04:37. > :04:41.footwork. Try that if you are a tennis player and see how many times
:04:42. > :05:43.out of ten it goes in! That was double break points down.
:05:44. > :05:49.Martin Klizan has done a wonderful job of taking Rafa out of his
:05:50. > :06:08.comfort zone. He doesn't look at all happy right now.
:06:09. > :06:15.If you are going to hit a serve and a 100 mph to a left-hander who hits
:06:16. > :07:18.it that well you had better catch the line. You've got to place it
:07:19. > :07:23.just right. He did. It is amazing, since he came near her as a
:07:24. > :07:31.17-year-old in 23, beat Mario and Jake and Lee Childs who is now
:07:32. > :07:37.coaching at Queen's Club, you are going to have to beat him, Nadal,
:07:38. > :07:41.execute the game plan from beginning to end because he won't give
:07:42. > :07:45.anything away. What is even more amazing that, did you see when he
:07:46. > :07:51.hit the ball to win that game and jumped up and pumped his fist? He is
:07:52. > :07:54.down 6-4 in the first round of Wimbledon and this guy looked like
:07:55. > :08:01.he just reached the finals again. That is so admirable. He's got to be
:08:02. > :08:07.wondering what he's got to do to beat these guys like because Rosol,
:08:08. > :08:13.Steve Darcis, and Klizan, all good professionals but they are inspired
:08:14. > :08:16.on grass every time. He is taking the Jimmy Connors and Lleyton Hewitt
:08:17. > :08:20.method which is to try harder than these guys. No matter what, you keep
:08:21. > :08:27.giving more than 100%, and eventually, most of the guys fall in
:08:28. > :08:32.some way, shape or form. A couple of the people that you mention did not,
:08:33. > :08:38.but there were extenuating circumstances. Knee problems, wet or
:08:39. > :08:58.cold conditions, these conditions suit Nadal pretty well, considering
:08:59. > :09:03.it is the first round. I guess the important question is, when you look
:09:04. > :09:04.at how slight he is and how hard he is hitting the ball, how long can he
:09:05. > :09:31.keep this up? He is trying to throw his character
:09:32. > :09:37.onto the other end of the court! And trying to get the crowd on his side
:09:38. > :09:40.and make them realise, I am in a tough match, I need your help, if
:09:41. > :09:47.you want me around in the second week. But we like this guy Klizan
:09:48. > :09:55.that we have never heard of at the moment, would be the crowd's
:09:56. > :09:58.response! We will give them an opinion poll, which of these two
:09:59. > :10:01.players they would like to see in the second week! LAUGHTER
:10:02. > :10:26.. He has been so successful with that
:10:27. > :10:29.risky shot of the high part of the net, the short part of the court,
:10:30. > :10:55.time and again that is where he has scored winners.
:10:56. > :11:00.Forget the crowd, ask Roger Federer if he wants to cede Nadal in the
:11:01. > :11:06.second week! They are in the second half. -- ask him if he wants to see
:11:07. > :11:11.him in the second week. One hour and seven minutes into this match, one
:11:12. > :11:17.set, and no break in the second, a little early to be an upset alert.
:11:18. > :12:50.-- on upset alert. Klizan complaining to Martin Damm,
:12:51. > :12:55.up there in the box, in these conditions, I am slipping and
:12:56. > :13:00.sliding. Just take a look at the school. It's pretty nice for Klizan
:13:01. > :13:20.at the moment. -- just take a look at the score. That would fall into
:13:21. > :13:23.the category, get a grip! The studs on the bottom of the grasscourt
:13:24. > :13:29.tennis shoes. They come out once a year and there are a lot of
:13:30. > :13:39.regulations, not just on the length and the stiffness of the things and
:13:40. > :13:47.how many per square inch. UMPIRE: Mr Klizan is challenging the call. The
:13:48. > :14:07.ball was called out and has been overruled in. End of game. It is on
:14:08. > :14:11.the serve. Interesting match here. SUE BARKER: a fascinating match on
:14:12. > :14:17.Centre Court. We will be right back with it. Let's update you with what
:14:18. > :14:22.is happening elsewhere. On Court three, Heather Watson, the British
:14:23. > :14:27.and one, has taken the first set against Tomljanovic of Croatia.
:14:28. > :14:30.6-3. It is 1-1 in the second set. It's looking good for Heather at the
:14:31. > :14:40.moment. That is live on the red button. And live on BBC1 is this
:14:41. > :14:44.match on Court One, Samantha Murray of Great Britain, a wild card,
:14:45. > :14:51.against the number five seed Maria Sharapova. Semantics going well, she
:14:52. > :14:57.has had points to level it at 2-2. -- Samantha Stosur going well. And
:14:58. > :15:02.Roger Federer has won his match 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, against Paolo Lorenzi,
:15:03. > :15:18.that was earlier on Court One. Back to Centre Court. -- Samantha Murray
:15:19. > :15:22.is going well. Martin Klizan served out the first set because a double
:15:23. > :15:26.fault came out of nowhere for Nadal, Nadal has not looked comfortable but
:15:27. > :15:31.the spirit and willing are there, and if the tennis is flowing, Martin
:15:32. > :15:35.Klizan will get a barrage. But at the moment he is more than holding
:15:36. > :15:54.his own, leading by one set, trailing 3-2 in the second. JOHN
:15:55. > :16:00.MCENROE: You will have to explain to me what that is! He is looking to be
:16:01. > :16:08.nominated for the worst drop shot of the. That is definitely at the top
:16:09. > :16:11.of the list! He is 2-3 on those. Noone no need to look any further.
:16:12. > :16:45.That is a nice way to retaliate. A slice with not a lot of pace,
:16:46. > :16:49.harder to generate your own power. Nadal would be well served to use
:16:50. > :17:14.that shot more often. I suspect he will. That is a great return.
:17:15. > :17:25.This is what he has been waiting for. He often goes back on the
:17:26. > :19:53.second serve. He smothered that one. The reward, two break points.
:19:54. > :20:05.Magnificent stuff! It is. He's like a goalkeeper at the back of the
:20:06. > :20:12.courts, Martin Klizan. This whole game, ever since that drop shot, it
:20:13. > :20:13.seems like Klizan is going uphill. It seems that the backward points
:20:14. > :20:59.are being played on gaffer's scratch There is the breakthrough! And Nadal
:21:00. > :21:10.is finally in the match, forcing himself forward. But also
:21:11. > :21:14.unpredictable, which was helpful there. He stepped back a few times,
:21:15. > :21:19.stepped in just enough to give Klizan something to think about, a
:21:20. > :21:28.magnificent game he just played, unbelievable game to break. That was
:21:29. > :21:32.big-time. That backhand return at 15-30 was illustrative of his
:21:33. > :21:37.willingness to change. The Mac I don't think Klizan will be trying to
:21:38. > :21:43.drop shot any time soon! If you're drop shot can be volleyed by the
:21:44. > :21:50.opponent, it did not work. And this is new ball is now. Back in
:21:51. > :22:07.business. All the twitches and polls. 4-2. -- all the twitches and
:22:08. > :22:12.polls. Nine times out of ten I am not sure that Nadal would want new
:22:13. > :22:14.balls. He likes big fluffy balls with a little more time on this
:22:15. > :22:44.surface. No, sir! Just when he has got his
:22:45. > :23:45.nose in front, errors. He does have some options on his
:23:46. > :23:51.serve. This is where he needs to take advantage of it. Get a little
:23:52. > :24:04.more slice and spin and more pop if he decides to hit a big one at the
:24:05. > :24:06.middle. -- up the middle. He ended it uses the body serve. That came in
:24:07. > :25:08.handy, then. That is a bit cold. Having broken,
:25:09. > :25:13.Rafael Nadal wins the game. We could use a great match to get going. I
:25:14. > :25:21.love it. I don't know if this will be one of those. If Nadal will do
:25:22. > :25:25.what he did at the French Open last, coming back from one set and then
:25:26. > :25:30.easing his way past his opponent, in fourth and fifth gear, but we could
:25:31. > :25:37.use a good match. Did you see Gregor tore Dimitrov yesterday, John? I
:25:38. > :25:43.did. I think is finally ready to make that next step and this is
:25:44. > :25:49.tough stuff to challenge the top four guys. What did you make of
:25:50. > :25:53.Murray yesterday, Peter? I didn't see him but we saw him at Queen's
:25:54. > :26:00.Club and also in Paris, and he seemed to playing well. Federer.
:26:01. > :26:07.Easy win today. Nothing to suggest that we won't see the big names
:26:08. > :26:14.making it through. This guy, Klizan, has put a lot of effort in. Peter,
:26:15. > :26:19.you mention the frail frame, and it looked to me, we are right near him,
:26:20. > :26:25.Martin, at four - two, looked weary. Part of it was mental. Finally Nadal
:26:26. > :26:33.at gotten to him. Part of him was perhaps thinking about this down to
:26:34. > :26:39.drop shot. Can you say hello? Hello, everyone on the Hill. We can't
:26:40. > :26:45.change their name, it is still Tim Henman Hill. And he's got the
:26:46. > :26:56.trophy. Consolation, Tim gets to keep his cell! -- Andy has got the
:26:57. > :27:01.trophy. Tim gets to keep the Hill! Rafael Nadal, in a bit of trouble
:27:02. > :27:02.after losing the first set, but in control in the second set at the
:27:03. > :28:01.moment. I would have thought he could have
:28:02. > :28:06.left that one. It did look like it was going long but you don't have a
:28:07. > :28:12.whole lot of time to decide, that's visual. No! Probably around one
:28:13. > :28:31.second from serve to ball coming back. The hold forced Nadal to serve
:28:32. > :29:05.it out, at the very least, try to grab the lead again.
:29:06. > :29:12.The fact that she has committed and forced in self over the years to
:29:13. > :29:18.step closer on the return, you can see it is starting to pay off --
:29:19. > :29:23.that he has committed and forced himself to step closer on the
:29:24. > :30:02.return. It is like when he changed his serve to play in the U.S. Open.
:30:03. > :30:13.That is the first part of the job done. He has kept himself in with a
:30:14. > :31:26.chance. And now Rafael Nadal will serve for the set.
:31:27. > :31:34.previous shot and volleyed it, he chose to wait. That is two Mrs he
:31:35. > :32:36.would like back. Again love down. Was that a mishit return? I think
:32:37. > :32:42.so, it didn't come out of the middle, did it? It might have gone
:32:43. > :32:48.where he wanted it to go but... He didn't hit it cleanly but that
:32:49. > :32:50.worked out for him. Tried to get it into the body, now he has got to try
:32:51. > :33:02.to break some points and level this No mistakes this time, watched it
:33:03. > :33:20.like a hawk. He made this volley look easy. It
:33:21. > :34:02.most certainly is not. He missed one of those reverse
:34:03. > :34:04.forehands, didn't he? Just measured that one. The footwork was beautiful
:34:05. > :35:03.to watch. Nadal makes it one set all here on
:35:04. > :35:07.Centre Court, one hour and a half of intensity from both players. I
:35:08. > :35:15.wonder if Klizan can survive the inevitable onslaught now over the
:35:16. > :35:20.next ten or 15 minutes. Fortunately we are going to find that out very
:35:21. > :35:29.soon. How much energy did he expend? Peter pointed out that it
:35:30. > :35:37.was not a good sign. He looks whipped right now. He has a long way
:35:38. > :35:42.to go. This is key for Klizan to get back on track, get the lead and not
:35:43. > :35:49.let Nadal take over and start dictating. Easy for me to say in the
:35:50. > :35:55.commentators' booth. Perhaps going for a toilet break will give him a
:35:56. > :36:01.moment to pull himself together. Klizan is not the sort of bloke to
:36:02. > :36:06.buckle. Having started the year just outside of 100, his schedule this
:36:07. > :36:12.year, what price he has paid for these sorts of opportunities and he
:36:13. > :36:17.has been all over the place. He went to Rio, Sao Paulo, Colombia, made
:36:18. > :36:35.the final of that. Qualified in Munich, he beat some tough guys on
:36:36. > :36:39.clay, he won two rounds of the French Open, the quarterfinal at
:36:40. > :36:49.Eastbourne so he has paid the price to get back into the game at this
:36:50. > :36:58.level. We figured out by two -- figured out part of why he is
:36:59. > :37:04.wearing that now! You can hardly be surprised that his wrist became an
:37:05. > :37:16.issue at the end of last year. It is one of the reasons he has had to
:37:17. > :37:24.battle back. He has got that sort of look of Karol Kucera about him. They
:37:25. > :37:36.sort of wonder around and then strike. I like the way he carries
:37:37. > :37:44.himself on court. Look at these stats. SUE BARKER: Fascinating match
:37:45. > :37:49.and we will be back at the start of the third set, but let's show you
:37:50. > :37:55.what has been happening on Court three. Britain's Heather Watson is
:37:56. > :38:04.through. A wonderful when for her. The British fans are delighted with
:38:05. > :38:17.that victory. She will next meet the finalist at Eastbourne or Radwanska.
:38:18. > :38:22.Over on Court 18, Richard Gasquet is through but he had to do it the hard
:38:23. > :38:31.way against James Duckworth of Australia. Gasquet of France through
:38:32. > :38:38.to round two, so that is what has been happening elsewhere. Let's
:38:39. > :38:45.rejoin Centre Court. ANDREW CASTLE: We have only got one
:38:46. > :38:56.player at the moment, sadly. Here he comes, dashing back on court. 28
:38:57. > :39:03.years of age, world number one shortly after he won the greatest
:39:04. > :39:11.match that I ever saw. The Wimbledon final? For me. Me too. He has been
:39:12. > :39:16.part of the greatest clay court match with Novak Djokovic last year
:39:17. > :39:23.in the semifinals, the six-hour match they played in Australia.
:39:24. > :39:29.Probably arguably the greatest match ever played in Australia.
:39:30. > :39:35.Wimbledon... He has just got to work out the Open. He has played some
:39:36. > :39:40.great players there. We hope Rafael Nadal will still be around for
:39:41. > :39:45.another three or four years. I doubt very much whether he will still be
:39:46. > :39:48.playing when he is fed's age, that is five years away. Roger is
:39:49. > :40:06.approaching his 33rd. He has spent more time on the floor
:40:07. > :40:11.than on his feet! He started complaining early in the second set
:40:12. > :40:18.I think. His concentration was thrown a bit then. And he looks like
:40:19. > :40:26.he is down even though the score is tied. He has done a lot of good
:40:27. > :42:33.things, he should start focusing on that.
:42:34. > :42:55.Nadal is getting Klizan to take more chances, go big four more difficult
:42:56. > :43:03.parts of the court. Only half of those have succeeded. The first two
:43:04. > :43:05.have been disastrous. He succeeded with the disguise but forgot to
:43:06. > :43:53.execute. Nadal could taste that. He worked so
:43:54. > :44:31.hard to put himself in a position to break.
:44:32. > :44:53.That has got to be one of the best points you will ever see on this
:44:54. > :45:14.court. Tell the guy to try! He was down and he pirouetted.
:45:15. > :45:22.The ability to fall over and get back up again, this childlike thing,
:45:23. > :45:33.it is a distant memory for most of us. But watching Nadal do that, it
:45:34. > :45:42.is like he has springs or something. Pirouette and up! He knows he is
:45:43. > :45:49.involved in this point, and he loves winning these. Who wouldn't? They
:45:50. > :45:53.should send a tape of this to every junior in the draw to show these
:45:54. > :45:55.kids what it is like to give everything you have got. That was
:45:56. > :46:12.amazing. No wonder. There is hardly a
:46:13. > :46:16.sportsman out there, including footballers like Lionel Messi, they
:46:17. > :46:33.look at this guy and they know he is something special.
:46:34. > :49:09.The ability to change a game in the middle of the match, the change of
:49:10. > :49:14.strategy, is key. Insert one, Nadal had a quarter of balls inside the
:49:15. > :49:59.baseline. Inset two that is a big difference.
:50:00. > :50:09.UMPIRE: The ball was called out. Klizan challenging to no avail.
:50:10. > :50:24.Things are slipping away rather quickly at the moment.
:50:25. > :50:34.UMPIRE: Mr Klizan has two challenges remaining. Is there anyway Klizan
:50:35. > :50:36.can win this match from here? There is a way but it is more difficult
:50:37. > :50:55.than it was 20 minutes ago. It is almost as though the third set
:50:56. > :50:58.is gone. He has to pull himself together and regroup. It certainly
:50:59. > :52:47.will be if he loses this game. And the third set is under the
:52:48. > :52:54.complete control of the world number one, the number two seed, Rafael
:52:55. > :53:00.Nadal. Here I am sitting in the commentary box with McEnroe and
:53:01. > :53:09.Fleming. I used to like watching you two play. We used to like to play
:53:10. > :53:21.together. I loved it. I watched you play at the Olympia once, I loved
:53:22. > :53:29.that. We didn't take them! We just cranked up... That was fun. We knew
:53:30. > :53:34.each other inside out and we fared off each other and I think you can
:53:35. > :53:39.see in this situation why tennis is such a mental game, particularly
:53:40. > :53:44.when it is one on one. This guy battled so hard to get into the head
:53:45. > :53:51.of Klizan and now the guy looks fraught. I want to know what Fleming
:53:52. > :53:55.did to get inside your head. He used to be more vociferous than I was.
:53:56. > :54:04.When we first started playing, I had to calm this guy. No way. God is my
:54:05. > :54:15.witness, this guy was more emotional than I was. Peter, it is time to
:54:16. > :54:26.step up and tell the truth after all these years. For about a year or two
:54:27. > :54:35.he was like that, then he became the calm, mature man that we know. That
:54:36. > :57:14.is enough from you two! Two breaks of serve, Nadal in control.
:57:15. > :57:21.This is surprising, a chance for Klizan to get one of these breaks
:57:22. > :57:42.back. I didn't see this coming. It looked good to me, but my eyes
:57:43. > :57:43.have started to deceive me. Nadal decided to challenge. It looks like
:57:44. > :58:26.a perfectly placed serve. You would have to say that was a
:58:27. > :58:27.shockingly poor game from the two-time Wimbledon champion there.
:58:28. > :59:27.The giveaway gift. Nadal way off the court there. It
:59:28. > :59:37.was a tough shot to execute but he knew that if he hit it right it was
:59:38. > :59:43.a winner. SUE BARKER: We are leaving Centre Court on BBC Two because the
:59:44. > :59:48.match continues right now on BBC1. If you want to continue watching,
:59:49. > :59:56.switch over now to BBC1. Before we bring you more on live tennis on BBC
:59:57. > :00:01.Two, one result to bring you. The Canadian Milos Raonic is through
:00:02. > :00:11.against Matthew Ebden, the Australian. One of the future stars
:00:12. > :00:33.of the game. That was a result from earlier on court three right now,
:00:34. > :00:41.John is no playing Daniel from Great Britain. Over on court 12, Feliciano
:00:42. > :00:59.Lopez going well today, two tie-break sets, he is in control
:01:00. > :01:04.there. Gael Monfils is just starting his campaign, possibly looking for
:01:05. > :01:08.an early break in his match. That is on court 18. We'll keep you

:02:15. > :02:18.BARKER: Some anyways to follow Wimbledon. Another result from
:02:19. > :02:22.earlier, the former World War I, Caroline Wozniacki, a comfortable
:02:23. > :02:28.winner today of a Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-3 6-0 commission of phases
:02:29. > :02:33.Naomi Broady of Great Britain and the next round. A wonderful Winford
:02:34. > :02:39.Caroline today and she had fun in her press conference after the
:02:40. > :02:43.match. -- a wonderful win for Caroline today. Remit you had a

:14:22. > :14:27.Some like to give the other one a chance, having won the toss, giving
:14:28. > :14:31.the opponent the chance to serve might create an early opportunity

:18:57. > :19:01.an intriguing matchup, Hantuchova with so much experience, she has
:19:02. > :19:04.been higher up in the rankings against the young pretender, Eugenie
:19:05. > :19:10.Bouchard showing so much promise this year. One of the WTA's rising

:21:41. > :21:45.over-press. Over the years she has tended to do that, driven by rather
:21:46. > :21:55.a nervous disposition, particularly at the start of each match. Perhaps
:21:56. > :23:09.too eager, the Canadian. Hantuchova just and so much pressure
:23:10. > :23:14.from the Bouchard ground strokes. -- and so much pressure. Bouchard not
:23:15. > :23:16.moving an inch of that baseline, ready to take the ball on as early
:23:17. > :25:10.as possible. Good for Daniela Hantuchova, and
:25:11. > :25:13.good for the match. Yes, it always feels good to get onto the school
:25:14. > :25:41.board at the start, helps to settle any nerves. -- get onto the school
:25:42. > :25:53.board. -- get onto the score board. So sweet from Hantuchova! She is
:25:54. > :26:21.very quick to cut off the angle on the volley, showing the feel that
:26:22. > :26:28.she possesses. Good attacking play by frantic over again. -- by
:26:29. > :27:06.Hantuchova again. She was right onto that forehand. More pensive now.
:27:07. > :28:12.Break points against her. Hired a chance to draw some early
:28:13. > :28:17.conclusions? Daniela Hantuchova, such an experienced player, enjoys
:28:18. > :28:21.playing on grass. Really feels comfortable moving out here. A
:28:22. > :28:34.player with a lot of variety. Not afraid to move forwards. She stands
:28:35. > :28:44.in fourth place in the number of wins achieved in grasscourt matches,
:28:45. > :28:53.as you say, she likes it, but the Canadian flag will certainly be
:28:54. > :28:57.waving during the contest. I think it is an intriguing opening between
:28:58. > :29:01.the experienced player and the gang player. But the young player that
:29:02. > :29:07.has already been into Grand Slam them a fan of this year, losing to
:29:08. > :29:11.the champion on each occasion. Quite incredible. And it was only two
:29:12. > :29:16.years ago that she won the Girls' Singles title at Wimbledon. She
:29:17. > :29:19.really has progressed through the ranks incredibly quickly. And she is
:29:20. > :29:24.a fun player to watch, Eugenie Bouchard. I love the way she looks
:29:25. > :29:38.to take the ball early, I love her attitude on the court. And the fact
:29:39. > :29:46.that she is absolutely fearless. She has been given an early test here.
:29:47. > :32:11.Daniela Hantuchova, 2-1, with the early break.
:32:12. > :32:49.It is just coming back too quickly at the moment. Hantuchova really
:32:50. > :32:52.getting a good read of Bouchard's second serve. She is there, early
:32:53. > :33:51.preparation. Just as I was complimenting Daniela
:33:52. > :34:16.Hantuchova, she misses two in a row. Welcome to the club!
:34:17. > :34:25.She took full advantage of those two errors. And she will feel a little
:34:26. > :34:45.better for that fact. Quite a lot of available space that
:34:46. > :34:51.she put the ball into there. Bouchard is a player who is always
:34:52. > :34:56.looking to take time away from her opponents. Across all services, hard
:34:57. > :35:06.court, clay court, grass court, it is the same type of aggressive game
:35:07. > :35:10.she is trying to play. It will be interesting how this match
:35:11. > :35:14.progresses for her, and should she win today, how she progresses in the
:35:15. > :35:20.tournament because there is so much more expected of her now, having
:35:21. > :35:29.made two semifinals at the Australian Open, the French Open.
:35:30. > :35:39.It is always interesting for me to see how young player deals with the
:35:40. > :35:41.expectations and the pressure. To those who much is given, much is
:35:42. > :36:01.required. Look how far forward she was to
:36:02. > :36:38.receive the first serve there. Shot off the line, always makes it
:36:39. > :37:03.difficult for players. Pushing the window open a bit.
:37:04. > :37:07.If you don't get the serve in exactly the right place, that is
:37:08. > :37:31.what is coming back at you. Excellent game for the Canadian.
:37:32. > :38:50.Aggressive from the first point. Pushed it far too far! Again,
:38:51. > :38:56.Hantuchova showing us the feel she has and Bouchard did a good job to
:38:57. > :39:01.get to it. No control once she got there. Six straight points against
:39:02. > :39:26.the server. Not a well disguised drop shot from
:39:27. > :40:01.Bouchard, Hantuchova up there with plenty of time.
:40:02. > :40:09.That is the beauty of sport, it surprises you so often. Who would
:40:10. > :40:13.have said there would be eight consecutive points against the
:40:14. > :40:26.server? Both players here are very strong returners. Hantuchova is
:40:27. > :40:32.really one of the best professionals out there in the women's game.
:40:33. > :40:36.Watching her prepare for her practice, training sessions,
:40:37. > :40:40.matches, she is always so meticulous with how she goes about everything
:40:41. > :40:49.and she is still going strong at the age of 31. Still keen to push on.
:40:50. > :42:21.Plenty of girls playing into their 30s today.
:42:22. > :42:35.First challenge of the match. And the player wins. Back to the first
:42:36. > :43:59.serve. Will she be right again? She is!
:44:00. > :44:08.Only just! UMPIRE: First serve, 30-0. Just adds a bit to the
:44:09. > :44:33.confidence, that is the way she is playing, certainly justifying it.
:44:34. > :46:19.Just a little too flat on that forehand, Hantuchova.
:46:20. > :46:31.An eventful game. Two successful challenges, one double fault. Game
:46:32. > :48:22.two Hantuchova, 3-5. So, the first place but now comes
:48:23. > :48:28.the problem - she has to break. Yes! The expectation, the pressure
:48:29. > :48:34.now on Hantuchova to serve out this opening set. She has been playing
:48:35. > :48:39.better tennis so far. Looking to take time away from Bouchard,
:48:40. > :48:42.rushing her on that forehand side, doing everything that Bouchard wants
:48:43. > :49:07.to do out here better. Fluffy clouds in the cluster, but
:49:08. > :49:35.who is hanging on a breeze? A little clap there from the coach,
:49:36. > :49:51.with the message don't miss the chance!
:49:52. > :50:36.She is nothing if not determined. A quality that Hantuchova has to
:50:37. > :51:06.match. That wasn't a bad approach from
:51:07. > :51:11.Hantuchova but Bouchard not moving back at all from the baseline,
:51:12. > :51:56.cutting off the angle. Three break points, square at 5-5.
:51:57. > :52:01.Excellent adjustment from Hantuchova, gave herself the room,
:52:02. > :53:58.the space to play this forehand. Well played from the Canadian. The
:53:59. > :54:01.crowd have warmed to it now. They were a bit quiet at the beginning.
:54:02. > :55:16.Now what? It is obvious which side Hantuchova
:55:17. > :55:19.really wants to attack in this match, trying to rush Bouchard on
:55:20. > :56:25.that forehand side. Oh, I say! How about this from
:56:26. > :56:34.Hantuchova. Great anticipation, holding her ground and keeping that
:56:35. > :57:52.backhand so compact. Break point again.
:57:53. > :58:00.So the Canadian back in the driving seat. Yes, she really kept her
:58:01. > :58:14.composure there. Tight moments in the match. Doing what she does best,
:58:15. > :58:22.holding her ground. Not backing off. Persevering with her game plan. I
:58:23. > :58:27.think what makes her stand out so different as well from a lot of the
:58:28. > :58:31.up and coming players is her attitude and her composure on the
:58:32. > :58:40.court. She doesn't allow herself to get too flustered, always projects
:58:41. > :58:48.are very cool, calm exterior. She has very positive body language. She
:58:49. > :58:58.is one of a family of four children, two sisters, one her twin. Sometimes
:58:59. > :59:10.bigger families make you learn to defend and fight your corner a
:59:11. > :59:12.little more. Eugenie, and her twin Beatrice, named after the royal
:59:13. > :00:31.daughters. excellent change from Hantuchova,
:00:32. > :00:35.very well disguised, took her racket back as if she was going to play a
:00:36. > :01:46.backhand and changed it at the last possible moment.
:01:47. > :01:50.Arguably the best forehand she has hit in the set and it has brought
:01:51. > :02:19.her a set point. UMPIRE: The call is being
:02:20. > :02:23.challenged. The call was out. She has been successful tries, she needs
:02:24. > :02:41.to succeed this time as well. -- twice. And she is not. And the set
:02:42. > :02:47.has gone. The coach and the player will be slightly kicking themselves
:02:48. > :02:52.because Hantuchova played the best two shots of the set, the backhand
:02:53. > :02:57.and a crosscourt shot and then the late drop shot but she has lost a
:02:58. > :03:07.bit unity. She had her chances, served the set at 5-4, just could
:03:08. > :03:11.not get it. The disbelief on Hantuchova's phase when a Hawk-eye
:03:12. > :03:23.showed that that shot was out. Even I thought it caught the line as
:03:24. > :03:29.well. Doing what she does at the sit down, Hantuchova always has her eyes
:03:30. > :03:39.closed, visualising. That is what she wants to do in the next game. A
:03:40. > :03:43.high percentage of first serves from Dani Aranzubia over but could not
:03:44. > :03:50.convert 20 got herself into play. Bouchard would like to do better
:03:51. > :03:54.behind her second service -- a high percentage of first serves from
:03:55. > :03:58.Hantuchova but she could not convert them when she got herself into play.
:03:59. > :04:13.Only five unforced errors from Bouchard, quite surprising. Bouchard
:04:14. > :04:22.really mixing it up. I feel she could use the bodies of more in this
:04:23. > :04:30.match. Hantuchova peppering the serve out her, choosing to go out
:04:31. > :05:36.wide on the deuce side. That peppering it at her. Kept a very
:05:37. > :05:42.low. That was strange. You can get that sometimes on grass,
:05:43. > :06:34.particularly when it hits the line. They should of the line at times.
:06:35. > :06:45.Oh! I do not think it is serious but it was an unpleasant moment for her.
:06:46. > :06:49.Average! She did not actually turn it, fortunately. Either ankle. --
:06:50. > :07:27.Welch. A well played forehand from
:07:28. > :07:40.Bouchard, almost played it like a half-volley. Absorbing all the plays
:07:41. > :07:58.from Hantuchova. -- all the pace. UMPIRE: The call is being
:07:59. > :07:59.challenged, the ball was called out. Deuce Ms Bouchard has two challenges
:08:00. > :09:44.remaining. That was certainly meant. That is a
:09:45. > :09:52.bit wild! Bouchard slightly escaping a difficult game. She did. Got
:09:53. > :09:59.herself out of trouble. Again really holding her ground after that serve
:10:00. > :10:13.for the next shot. Just determined not to Berdych behind that baseline.
:10:14. > :10:17.-- determined not to Berdych move. It will be interesting to see if
:10:18. > :10:22.Hantuchova continues with her game plan, peppering of the Bouchard
:10:23. > :10:48.forehand, whether she will mix it up a little more on the serve.
:10:49. > :11:21.That is wild. Difficult for the spectators. The shadows are growing.
:11:22. > :11:23.Amp iMac Ms Bouchard is challenging the call on the centreline. The ball
:11:24. > :11:48.was called good. Ms Bouchard has one challenge
:11:49. > :11:57.remaining. The ball was good. The first days of the match for Daniela
:11:58. > :12:10.Hantuchova. -- the first days of the match. She used her challenges early
:12:11. > :13:06.in this second set, Bouchard. She is starting to read Hantuchova's serve
:13:07. > :13:12.now. Not that time. It is a shot that has been effective for her in
:13:13. > :13:21.this match. Just over playing at that time. -- just over playing it
:13:22. > :13:48.that time. Bouchard now with a chance.
:13:49. > :14:02.Smart play from Hantuchova. Back behind her opponent. Bouchard
:14:03. > :14:17.looking to cover this basis. That was well watched from Hantuchova.
:14:18. > :14:26.Hantuchova persevering with hers serves to the Bouchard forehand.
:14:27. > :14:33.Being rewarded. -- with her serves. The opening games of the second set
:14:34. > :14:49.going to deuce. We have had a total of three from two games in the first
:14:50. > :14:54.set. And both servers had to battle. She might slip, Bouchard. Very
:14:55. > :16:17.square on. That is smart from Hantuchova. Held
:16:18. > :16:18.on to the forehand, changing the direction of play at the last
:16:19. > :17:24.possible moment. More buzz in the crowd, some people
:17:25. > :17:31.have returned to their seats, having taken a long tea break and missed a
:17:32. > :17:40.good set. Their last! Absolutely. We did expect some rain this afternoon
:17:41. > :17:44.that it has held off. -- their loss. Only one person that I think of when
:17:45. > :17:52.I see a player closing their eyes, Arthur Ashe. A long time back. Sadly
:17:53. > :17:56.no longer with us. Time for a look at the weather I never got an
:17:57. > :18:02.opportunity to see him play. An interesting character. Ask Jimmy
:18:03. > :18:19.Connors committee will tell about him! -- ask Jimmy Connors, he will
:18:20. > :18:25.tell you about him. So she has to come from behind in this set and
:18:26. > :18:39.indeed in the match. Needs to find her best and make it consistent.
:18:40. > :18:53.Solid volley. Not an area of the court that Daniela Hantuchova is
:18:54. > :18:54.afraid of. A very experienced player, has played a lot of doubles
:18:55. > :20:08.in her time. Crisp, clean volley. Hantuchova becoming a little too
:20:09. > :20:14.predictable about her serve this direction. -- about her service
:20:15. > :20:53.direction. New balls, new racket. You see that
:20:54. > :20:59.pretty much with all the players these days, as soon as the new micro
:21:00. > :21:02.balloons -- balls come out, they go to change their racket, they go for
:21:03. > :21:45.something a little tighter. Oh! This is where Bouchard is so
:21:46. > :21:46.dangerous when she has the time, winding up for that forehand.
:21:47. > :22:45.Excellent footwork. Yes! Excellent return from Hantuchova,
:22:46. > :23:11.hard, deep, straight down the middle, jamming Bouchard.
:23:12. > :23:30.Again, getting Bouchard with the depth on that return of serve.
:23:31. > :23:46.Second serve, break point. That is not her favourite line, that one!
:23:47. > :24:36.No! The fourth case -- gaze from
:24:37. > :25:07.Bouchard. -- her fourth ace. Oh! Hantuchova very quick onto that.
:25:08. > :25:14.SUE BARKER: At this point we will leave this match. Continue watching
:25:15. > :25:17.on the red button if you wish. We will bring you the Serena Williams
:25:18. > :25:23.match on Centre Court in a moment, but a short time ago on Centre Court
:25:24. > :25:26.Rafael Nadal won his match in four sets. It was a tight encounter
:25:27. > :25:31.against Martin Klizan of Slovenia who took the opening set, against
:25:32. > :25:37.the world number one, but like all great champions Rafa and deep and
:25:38. > :25:41.came through in four. Next he meets Lukas Rosol, who beat him in the
:25:42. > :25:44.second-round two years ago in five thrilling sets so it's a really
:25:45. > :25:49.tough draw for an adult that he is through and it was a glorious match
:25:50. > :25:54.the crowd on Centre Court. - it is a really tough draw for Nadal. That
:25:55. > :25:58.was a short time ago. And now the world and the one in the ladies game
:25:59. > :26:03.is just beginning her match against Anna Tatishvili of the USA. It is a
:26:04. > :26:17.close opening game so we will join them with our commentators, Lindsay
:26:18. > :26:26.Davenport and David Mercer. DAVID MERCER: Serena has had to save
:26:27. > :26:31.several break points already, and now a double fault. So an opening
:26:32. > :26:33.game that has already lasted eight minutes and we are back to deuce for
:26:34. > :27:01.the sixth time. She doesn't hold back, does she?
:27:02. > :27:05.LINDSAY DAVENPORT: She has come out with a game plan, to attack all her
:27:06. > :27:11.shots. Hitting them very hard and flat but not with a of margin. --
:27:12. > :27:30.not with a big margin. That credit to Anna Tatishvili, who
:27:31. > :27:54.has come out here not with a lot of confidence, but she has come out
:27:55. > :28:00.here looking like she believes. A good left-handed forehand from
:28:01. > :28:04.Tatishvili. It is not often that you see Serena with the fist pumps in
:28:05. > :28:28.just the first game, trying to get herself going, trying to get some
:28:29. > :28:36.energy flowing. A ten minute opening game, nobody predicted that!
:28:37. > :28:41.Especially on Serena's serve! Always a challenge to try to break her and
:28:42. > :28:59.her great serve on grass. Tatishvili game close. -- she came close.
:29:00. > :29:05.The first serve will be key for Tatishvili. She needs a high
:29:06. > :29:10.percentage of first serves. It is not a strength of her game so if
:29:11. > :29:18.Serena sees too many second serves she will be aggressive and start a
:29:19. > :29:28.point on her own terms. -- start the point.
:29:29. > :29:51.There is Anna Tatishvili's father, Dmitri, taking copious notes.
:29:52. > :30:47.guiding Serena's career over the last few years. They certainly worth
:30:48. > :31:16.an item at one time but now the relationship is just good friends.
:31:17. > :31:24.That was a bit too low to attempt that shop. Scrambling from Serena
:31:25. > :31:31.who slipped early in her rally but was able to get her balance back.
:31:32. > :31:35.That wall was way too low to hit a drive with any spin. Very difficult
:31:36. > :31:47.to get those over the net if you don't hit up on it. For so long,
:31:48. > :31:52.Serena was solely coached by her mother and father, and getting that
:31:53. > :31:58.new voice in her area a few years ago from Patrick certainly helped,
:31:59. > :32:00.got her motivated and focused on getting to number one in the world,
:32:01. > :32:25.winning more Grand Slams. We don't want any injuries, we had a
:32:26. > :32:38.lot early on in the Championships last year. No damage done, apart
:32:39. > :32:45.from pride. Very nearly went right over on the left ankle, did well to
:32:46. > :32:48.recover. That is two slips in this game, that might cause her to move
:32:49. > :34:00.more tentatively now. Tennis is a cruel game. Tatishvili
:34:01. > :34:08.has played well for 15 minutes, she has had gained points, a total of
:34:09. > :34:14.five, and yet the Scot says 2-0. She has had her chances early, and a lot
:34:15. > :34:15.of times if you don't take those chances early it gets even more
:34:16. > :34:44.difficult. Serena letting out some frustration
:34:45. > :34:51.with this one. Tatishvili so far has been able to push her back over that
:34:52. > :34:52.baseline. Serena is trying to reassert her dominance from that
:34:53. > :35:10.position. Serena Williams had an incredible
:35:11. > :35:17.year last year, 11 titles won. 78 matches won, four lost. Just three
:35:18. > :35:33.titles won so far this year. Her big sister has got the faster
:35:34. > :35:39.serve but I have to say I think Serena's has the better service
:35:40. > :35:40.motion. Absolutely, Serena with her perfect toss and simple motion, very
:35:41. > :36:53.little can go wrong. Again, Tatishvili going after her
:36:54. > :36:55.return. Followed it forward. Serena is not accustomed to opponents
:36:56. > :37:19.attacking her serve. Five aces already from Serena
:37:20. > :37:24.Williams and she has withstood a very powerful opening assault from
:37:25. > :37:31.Tatishvili, and with studied very well. Yes, able to get to this first
:37:32. > :37:35.sit down, still hasn't lost a game, and Tatishvili has played some of
:37:36. > :37:41.her best tennis and has nothing to show for it. This has made Serena
:37:42. > :37:46.moves focus from the very first point and she is all business out
:37:47. > :37:50.here. You can see how much winning here and getting another Grand Slam
:37:51. > :37:57.title under her belt means to her. Quite rightly she judges herself by
:37:58. > :38:06.the highest of standards, and to be halfway through a year, many of
:38:07. > :38:11.which thought she had a shot at the Grand Slams, holding all four majors
:38:12. > :38:15.at the same time, but we old-fashioned types say there is
:38:16. > :38:23.only one Grand Slam you have to win. That is going to be difficult
:38:24. > :38:27.to do, but Serena has not been to a quarterfinal of a Grand Slam yet
:38:28. > :38:36.this year. She had a shock second-round defeat in Paris, and
:38:37. > :38:41.that doesn't make her very happy. If you are wondering what happened to
:38:42. > :38:43.the young Spaniard who beat her in Paris, she lost in the first round
:38:44. > :39:01.yesterday to a young American. Always this hiatus after the first
:39:02. > :39:04.three games because they let people in, people have nipped out to get
:39:05. > :40:17.some refreshment. I really hope that Tatishvili
:40:18. > :40:19.converts these game points because she deserves to be on the
:40:20. > :40:46.scoreboard. There are some coaches who write
:40:47. > :40:52.down things all the time. You wonder... It has to be a nervous
:40:53. > :40:58.habit, right? I'm not sure what you could possibly write down about that
:40:59. > :41:18.point. Played perfectly by his daughter. Held serve to love.
:41:19. > :41:31.Do you remember Jankovic's mother a few years ago, she took a sip of
:41:32. > :41:36.water after every point that her daughter won. Did she take many
:41:37. > :42:00.toilet breaks? Several! I think he is writing the pistol to
:42:01. > :42:38.the Wimbledon committee. Second double fault from Williams.
:42:39. > :42:51.That is so good! Serena had time with this backhand. Tatishvili has
:42:52. > :42:57.done a good job so far with her pace and depth, but that is one of the
:42:58. > :42:58.first time is Serena has had time to settle for one of her ground
:42:59. > :43:43.strokes. -- to set up. Serena thought about challenging
:43:44. > :43:51.because she was almost walking to the chair, thinking she would serve
:43:52. > :44:01.the ace. How about that for dismissing a Serena Williams serve!
:44:02. > :44:05.Tatishvili again going forward to make contact well inside the
:44:06. > :44:25.baseline, cutting off the angle beautifully there.
:44:26. > :44:36.For someone who has really been struggling, she has had some success
:44:37. > :44:42.on the secondary circuit this year. She won on Daytona Beach, more
:44:43. > :44:48.motorsport than tennis, but she has come out here with a very positive
:44:49. > :44:53.attitude, hasn't she? Absolutely, she has come out here wanting to
:44:54. > :44:58.make things happen. So often the other players are so in awe of
:44:59. > :45:02.Serena that they are passive. You have got to give credit to
:45:03. > :45:08.Tatishvili for playing her style of game, which is so tough to do
:45:09. > :45:16.against Serena with her power. So far Serena has been able to handle
:45:17. > :45:35.it, but she has made a couple of scary moments for Serena.
:45:36. > :45:43.After the match, Lindsay! You've got it. I'm more of a Pimms girl
:45:44. > :47:00.though! That is the best return we have seen
:47:01. > :47:06.from Serena so far. Always takes a few games to get your timing down in
:47:07. > :47:10.a grass court match. Serena didn't play any tournaments coming in.
:47:11. > :47:34.Seems to be finding her groove now. A very impressive game indeed from
:47:35. > :47:41.Serena Williams. Now we can have a little look at Hawk-eye. The service
:47:42. > :47:51.direction concentrating very much on the T. Absolutely but still mixes
:47:52. > :47:56.her locations, and that is what makes her serve so difficult to
:47:57. > :48:01.defend against. She uses the same toss but yet is willing to mix up
:48:02. > :48:32.her location even on the big points. Six aces now.
:48:33. > :49:08.Serena Williams is flowing now, feeling more confident with her
:49:09. > :49:10.ground strokes and now the serve finding its mark. Three set points
:49:11. > :49:40.after exactly half an hour. SUE BARKER: After that marathon
:49:41. > :49:47.first game it has been all Serena Williams. Some results to bring you.
:49:48. > :49:53.Out on Court three, where John Isner has gone out in straight sets
:49:54. > :49:58.against Daniel Smethurst. He has been coming here to get inspired
:49:59. > :50:06.since the age of seven, always dreaming of playing here and it is
:50:07. > :50:21.his first wild card here. It is a loss for him but no disgrace against
:50:22. > :50:36.John Isner. And Monfils threw in straight sets, one of the great
:50:37. > :50:42.entertainers. And on Court One, Bouchard took the first set 7-5, but
:50:43. > :51:02.it is five - five against Hantuchova on Court One. This match is on the
:51:03. > :51:08.red button, but here on two we RE joining the Centre Court.
:51:09. > :51:17.COMMENTATOR: Where Serena Williams finished off that set in style,
:51:18. > :51:23.winning the last nine points. Doing a little bit of gardening!
:51:24. > :51:41.Tatishvili is serving at the start of the second.
:51:42. > :51:49.So important for Tatishvili to get off to a better start in the second
:51:50. > :51:54.set. Serena Williams definitely elevated her game after the first
:51:55. > :51:57.three or four in that first set. You have to try to slow her down now, if
:51:58. > :52:43.you can. Anything a little short on the
:52:44. > :53:22.second serve will be heavily punished by Serena.
:53:23. > :53:36.That is well played. Serena very careful here when she went wide for
:53:37. > :53:41.that forehand not to slip. After a couple of falls out on this slick
:53:42. > :53:51.grass court, she has been a bit more careful. Just asking the umpire for
:53:52. > :54:09.confirmation of the call. That is the type of tennis right
:54:10. > :54:15.there that Serena is so successful on the grass with. The big return,
:54:16. > :54:29.setting herself up for an easy shot.
:54:30. > :54:44.She slipped and got stuck and couldn't move!
:54:45. > :54:55.Her right foot was just anchored, she couldn't move it. She is such an
:54:56. > :55:01.explosive mover and she pushes off so hard on her feet. She has had a
:55:02. > :55:10.bit of a scare from sliding out so many times, and now she is trying to
:55:11. > :55:18.be more precise it is not as natural for her. Nothing like an old Panama
:55:19. > :55:32.hat, is there? Very elegant. Just composing herself a little.
:55:33. > :56:04.She moved very tentatively to that return.
:56:05. > :56:15.We have our first Hawk-eye challenge. Alison Hughes from
:56:16. > :56:25.Newcastle in the chair. Good challenge. So that goes down as an
:56:26. > :57:27.ace, her ninth already. It is actually one of the few times
:57:28. > :57:33.we have Serena at the net so far. She hasn't ventured her way forward
:57:34. > :57:39.too often yet and a lot of that is due to Tatishvili and the style of
:57:40. > :57:42.play, her hard, flat ground strokes, but that is the place Serena wants
:57:43. > :58:01.to be, especially here at Wimbledon. The aces count reaches ten, and the
:58:02. > :58:36.score reaches 1-1. She didn't move out of that
:58:37. > :59:03.backhand, Serena, just reached for it.
:59:04. > :59:13.There are times when you think she is a bit optimistic, going for a
:59:14. > :59:17.big, flat shot off that return. A case for saying, OK, let's get back
:59:18. > :59:25.into the rally and then I can give it a good whack.
:59:26. > :59:33.That is a nice forehand there, but definitely Tatishvili would benefit
:59:34. > :59:38.from learning a little bit of top-spin. Get a little bit more
:59:39. > :00:21.margin on her shots, especially when she is pulled wide, not in position.
:00:22. > :00:28.all thought that this had 6-1, 6-1 written all over it, in less than an
:00:29. > :00:37.hour but she is doing far than that. -- credit to Anna Tatishvili because
:00:38. > :00:43.we all thought that. Serena Williams definitely has a game phased on,
:00:44. > :00:49.very focused. Have you been on the London eye yet? I could not do that.
:00:50. > :00:53.It is safe. I have no head for heights at all, but you are inside
:00:54. > :00:58.one of those capsules. In an aeroplane, I can look out of the
:00:59. > :01:08.window. It is when I am on a cliff, or something like that. A good crowd
:01:09. > :01:16.still upon the hill? It is still going to be Tim Henman Hill? I have
:01:17. > :01:24.heard some people say the Murray Mount. Tim is paying me to say that!
:01:25. > :01:39.I thought maybe a Wimbledon title for Andy Murray might change things!
:01:40. > :01:40.UMPIRE: Quiet please, ladies and gentlemen, the players are ready.
:01:41. > :02:39.Quiet please. Thank you. Oh! There are no half measures in
:02:40. > :02:51.this match! Look at that. Aggressive shots. Serena more tentative on her
:02:52. > :03:03.backhand so far come it using that as a setup shot, willing to pull the
:03:04. > :03:19.trigger, more so with her forehand. Good movement by the centres service
:03:20. > :03:25.judge. Oh! Wasn't there a song about slip-sliding away? This court is
:03:26. > :03:32.still slippery. Did you get out of the way? It might have gotten that
:03:33. > :03:36.line judge. You feel more comfortable here on the fifth day,
:03:37. > :03:47.and that is when it starts to harden a bit.
:03:48. > :03:57.Love game for Serena Williams as she draws level. People will ask why the
:03:58. > :04:02.players would feel more comfortable, is it because the green
:04:03. > :04:06.has been worn off? Yes, as the tournament goes on you will see more
:04:07. > :04:19.brown patches and they are easier to move on. Excellent timing. You will
:04:20. > :04:21.see the players are more tentative in the doubles alleys, where it is
:04:22. > :04:58.still green and lush. We used to see it getting very one
:04:59. > :05:03.right at the T of the service box. That is no longer the case. The
:05:04. > :05:09.players playing entirely on all behind the baseline. -- on all
:05:10. > :05:19.behind the baseline. In the days when we did not have a
:05:20. > :05:23.roof over the Centre Court we had all those replays of the old
:05:24. > :05:28.matches, of John McEnroe against Bjorn Borg, and so on, that area of
:05:29. > :05:30.the court, around the T was one, now it is pristine, even in the second
:05:31. > :06:37.week. -- it used to be worn. Creating the angle that time rather
:06:38. > :06:39.than relying on the power and this is the first break point of the
:06:40. > :07:22.second set. Well done! Good playing from
:07:23. > :07:26.Tatishvili to save break point. Serena being a little tentative,
:07:27. > :07:35.missed timing the backhand, and Tatishvili immediately pounced. --
:07:36. > :07:35.Serena did not time her backhand properly, and Tatishvili immediately
:07:36. > :08:03.pounced. She has done a lot of her training
:08:04. > :08:49.at the Chris Evatt Academy, has Tatishvili. -- Chris Evatt.
:08:50. > :09:04.3-2 as Serena gets the first break of the second set. Hiding away there
:09:05. > :09:11.is Chris herself, looking very floral. She is calling the match for
:09:12. > :09:16.American TV. I think she would have some great insights into Tatishvili,
:09:17. > :09:20.who practices out her academy. Chris has a hand in a lot of up and coming
:09:21. > :09:31.professionals now. Heather Watson beat one of her pupils earlier
:09:32. > :09:35.today. No problems! That was a tough draw for her. It is lovely to see
:09:36. > :09:41.Heather back to form and fitness after a tough year last year.
:09:42. > :09:44.Unfortunately Laura Robson has had a tough year with injury and hopefully
:09:45. > :09:50.we can get them both back healthy and 2015. That would be nice. What a
:09:51. > :09:54.lovely way to spend an English summer's evening, sitting on the
:09:55. > :09:58.Hill, watching on the giant screen, or walking around the courts, plenty
:09:59. > :10:18.of action going on all over the place. And this famous old lady with
:10:19. > :10:21.her new top, the roof. News at ten? There is Trevor McDonald. What a
:10:22. > :11:00.great newscaster he was. And a lovely gentleman.
:11:01. > :11:05.In the opening game Tatishvili had four break points but was not able
:11:06. > :11:17.to convert any and has not seen a break point since. She hasn't seen
:11:18. > :11:21.much of the ball! It is just whistling past! That is what happens
:11:22. > :11:24.with Serena when she gets calm and focused and confident it becomes
:11:25. > :11:55.more and more difficult to even make a return.
:11:56. > :12:14.Fabulous serving. You will notice 53 minutes on the clock. That is the
:12:15. > :12:21.length of the match. You whispered that this was your prediction! I
:12:22. > :12:26.can't believe it! I am sneaky, I'm entitled to be in my old age! That
:12:27. > :12:30.was the time I thought Serena would take to win the match but with those
:12:31. > :12:41.first three games of the match, Tatishvili has delayed that.
:12:42. > :12:48.And good for her that she has. Because most of we pundits who
:12:49. > :12:52.pretend we know something about this game thought this would not last an
:12:53. > :13:00.hour. She has two last six more minutes but might be able to do it!
:13:01. > :13:03.-- she has to last six more minutes. She might do it particularly if she
:13:04. > :13:11.gets a few unforced errors to help her on her way. She hasn't won a
:13:12. > :13:15.main draw much and is last summer, and now she's coming out to Centre
:13:16. > :13:27.Court to face Serena Williams. She has not won a main draw match since
:13:28. > :13:32.last summer. Would she be able to fake confidence, as we said, she had
:13:33. > :13:33.those few chances early in the match, those slipped away but she
:13:34. > :13:53.has competed well. And there is no question that Serena
:13:54. > :13:58.has got much better as this match has progressed. Wasn't hitting
:13:59. > :14:04.through the court nearly as well early on but has now gotten more
:14:05. > :15:01.confident of the ground. -- off the ground.
:15:02. > :15:09.Chest when Serena seemed to be producing some fine form. -- chest
:15:10. > :15:13.when she seemed to be brewed using fine form, a couple of break points
:15:14. > :15:51.slip away with a couple of unforced errors.
:15:52. > :16:01.Great hitting from Serena there. As soon as she has got used to the pace
:16:02. > :16:02.of Tatishvili she has been able to control the majority of baseline
:16:03. > :16:46.rallies. Four games in a row for Serena
:16:47. > :16:56.Williams them has taken her to the verge of victory. After those first
:16:57. > :17:01.three or four games where Serena did not look sure of herself, now she
:17:02. > :17:05.has got accustomed to playing a match on grass, she is more used to
:17:06. > :17:15.the balls and how they bounce, this bead of the court. She is flowing.
:17:16. > :17:19.-- the speed of the court. If you have a lovely serf like she has,
:17:20. > :17:24.normally very solid about head, that's lovely throwing action.
:17:25. > :17:28.Amazing how sometimes some of the players on the tour don't have that
:17:29. > :17:34.natural motion of throwing a ball and Serena naturally has that arm
:17:35. > :17:45.strength, that great emotion. It is a very natural shot for her. She
:17:46. > :17:50.would be pretty good at baseball. Or a quarterback in American football?
:17:51. > :17:59.I wonder how far she could throw a football. If I put Bayview Hail Mary
:18:00. > :18:06.'s. You must ask about. Serving for a place in the second round. -- you
:18:07. > :18:29.must ask her that. That is being more aggressive with
:18:30. > :18:32.the backhand. A view times we have seen Serena guiding the backhand,
:18:33. > :18:38.trying to make it and know she is feeling more confident, taking a
:18:39. > :18:47.view things of that wing as well. -- now she is feeling more confident,
:18:48. > :19:06.taking a few swings of that wing as well. Tatishvili has made the one
:19:07. > :19:07.hour mark but it may not last much longer because Serena has three
:19:08. > :19:44.match points. A successful start to her 15th
:19:45. > :19:49.Wimbledon campaign, and really the only moment of threat were those
:19:50. > :19:53.break points in the very first game. Absolutely, once Serena settled into
:19:54. > :19:56.the match, getting through those first few games of her first
:19:57. > :20:01.grasscourt match this season, she seemed to get more confident, and
:20:02. > :20:09.she got so much better as the match went on. Being the old fashioned man
:20:10. > :20:14.that I am, how nice that Tatishvili is not just walking off, she is
:20:15. > :20:25.waiting. It was the old Wimbledon tradition, you came on together, you
:20:26. > :20:28.walked off together. Serena is always very generous to her
:20:29. > :20:36.opponents in the handshake and the comments afterwards. And also with
:20:37. > :21:01.the fans, finding time for autographs.
:21:02. > :21:08.Some noise in the crowd because they have been told they will be an
:21:09. > :21:11.additional match on the Centre Court featuring the runner-up at the
:21:12. > :21:14.French Open, Simona Halep. She will begin shortly in a further much on
:21:15. > :21:30.the Centre Court. That's a real bonus for the crowd. What an honour
:21:31. > :21:39.for Simona Halep as well. This is the new thing, is Alfie. I would not
:21:40. > :21:52.have a clue how to do one of those. You don't do those! A great
:21:53. > :22:03.souvenir! A photograph, and a headband as well. Simona Halep may
:22:04. > :22:21.not make it onto the court because Serena will still be there! 16 aces
:22:22. > :22:28.from Serena Williams in a match that lasted 61 minutes, very impressive.
:22:29. > :22:34.Winning 70% of the points behind her first serve. This is the 71st
:22:35. > :22:49.victory at Wimbledon for Serena Williams. 6-1. And 6-2. Over Anna
:22:50. > :23:00.Tatishvili. And she will be back in action on Thursday. But her first
:23:01. > :23:08.task after the match is to have a chat. Serena congratulations. A very
:23:09. > :23:13.tough first game of the match but it seemed that got out of the way and
:23:14. > :23:18.you won it, you got rolling. Last time I played her, she ended the
:23:19. > :23:22.match very tough and she started out where she ended, so you know, she
:23:23. > :23:26.can hit really, really hard so I was ready for that. She took a tumble. A
:23:27. > :23:33.little slippery. How were conditions? On a Mac it was weird, I
:23:34. > :23:37.usually feel really good and I kept falling today, but it's probably
:23:38. > :23:43.just getting my bearings. I didn't play much grass last year. I think I
:23:44. > :23:46.will be OK. If anyone knows your way around Wimbledon it is you. The
:23:47. > :23:50.crowd seemed to appreciate you, you got a great reaction when you came
:23:51. > :23:54.off court after winning. It is great, I love playing at Wimbledon,
:23:55. > :23:58.you dream of coming here when you are young and to break is such an
:23:59. > :24:03.honour for me. Every time I step out on the court it makes we want to
:24:04. > :24:09.keep coming for years and years. We look forward to chatting with you
:24:10. > :24:12.later in the tournament. Thank you. SUE BARKER: Serena Williams,
:24:13. > :24:18.smiling, leaving Centre Court. She had a long wait after the Nadal
:24:19. > :24:21.match went on for four sets but after that epic opening game at all
:24:22. > :24:29.went one way. Serena Williams, the top seed, the favoured the title,
:24:30. > :24:33.through straight sets. That has been happening on Centre Court. On Court
:24:34. > :24:38.Number One, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, the number 13 seed, is true,
:24:39. > :24:45.although Daniel Agger each of the first -- served for the first set.
:24:46. > :24:48.Bouchard took the first set 7-5, is a finalist at the Australian Open
:24:49. > :24:52.and the French Open, a staff of the future, she is through her opening
:24:53. > :24:57.match. This is what she had to say afterwards. Congratulations, a
:24:58. > :25:04.straight sets win but that looked it up much. It absolutely was. Your
:25:05. > :25:07.first match is always tough, especially at Wimbledon. I was a
:25:08. > :25:12.little nervous. I did not play my best. Until the end, and that is
:25:13. > :25:16.what matters. You practised on grass at the weekend but to play a match
:25:17. > :25:20.of that intensity, that's the kind of match that you want to help you
:25:21. > :25:25.get through to the later rounds of the tournament. Fishel. She is a
:25:26. > :25:29.really good player, it's a really tough match and she wasn't giving me
:25:30. > :25:34.many chances. I did not play quite as aggressively as I wanted to. At
:25:35. > :25:38.the end when it counted I upped it a bit. You've been following the World
:25:39. > :25:44.Cup, where you are blade watching Nixon: Smite? I was! I did not watch
:25:45. > :25:48.much of it but I randomly turned on the TV and it was goalless, and then
:25:49. > :26:04.in the next few men it is, they scored two goals so I am happy that
:26:05. > :26:06.they won. And a lot of people are happy that you one. Congratulations.
:26:07. > :26:11.SUE BARKER: A play with a big feature, but you'll only Jankovic is
:26:12. > :26:16.out, she was beaten by Kaia Kanepi, who has twice been a quarterfinalist
:26:17. > :26:23.at Wimbledon, and she has put Jiminy Jankovic out in straight sets, 6-3,
:26:24. > :26:29.6-2. -- yelling at Jankovic. Another seed is out of the Championships.
:26:30. > :26:36.Let's round at the British players in action today. -- let's round them
:26:37. > :26:40.up. Daniel Smethurst was that his first ever Wimbledon facing the
:26:41. > :26:46.number nine seed, the giant John Isner. A brave effort but Daniel
:26:47. > :26:56.went down in three sets, but it was an entertaining match on Court
:26:57. > :27:00.three. Samantha Murray was up against Maria Sharapova on Court in
:27:01. > :27:05.one, her first appearance on the big show courts. The number five seed
:27:06. > :27:10.came through in straight sets, six - one, 6-0 but the match was closer
:27:11. > :27:16.than the score suggests. Maria threw in 58 minutes. It could be Maria
:27:17. > :27:22.Sharapova and Serena Williams in the quarterfinal. But good news for
:27:23. > :27:27.Britain, have the Watson, the British and the one, is through,
:27:28. > :27:38.against Ali and Tomljanovic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-2. - she is having a
:27:39. > :27:42.wonderful year, Heather, impressive at Eastbourne and the crowd enjoying
:27:43. > :27:46.her victory on Court No three. After the celebrations, Heather had this
:27:47. > :27:49.to say in her press conference because she was asked about the
:27:50. > :27:53.three British players were into the second round, herself, Andy Murray
:27:54. > :27:59.and Naomi Broady. This is what she said. Being from Guernsey I could
:28:00. > :28:07.not stay in Guernsey, I had to leave, so I tried looking at options
:28:08. > :28:13.in the UK, different ones, and even around Europe, but when I went to
:28:14. > :28:17.visit the academy I knew it was the place me and I was very excited and
:28:18. > :28:23.wanted to go there and one of the main reasons was that the weather
:28:24. > :28:31.was very good, and also it was so competitive, not just in tennis but
:28:32. > :28:36.in all the sports. So for me, I could not stay here, I don't think,
:28:37. > :28:43.because it just wasn't for me. I think also the weather plays a big
:28:44. > :28:48.part. Has anyone ever asked you, anyone from the LTA, what they can
:28:49. > :28:53.do to better suit a player like you who has gone abroad? They did not
:28:54. > :28:55.ask me. I had the choice. I chose Florida but they supported my
:28:56. > :29:02.decision and supported me through it. They could easily have let me
:29:03. > :29:09.be. That tennis being an expensive sport to be involved in, every
:29:10. > :29:13.little helps. SUE BARKER: Heather explaining why she did not come
:29:14. > :29:16.through the LTA system with Andy Murray and Naomi Broady. Sam Smith
:29:17. > :29:21.is with me. This point often comes about Wimbledon. What are the LTA
:29:22. > :29:25.doing with their money because apart from the three winners, and that he
:29:26. > :29:28.did not come to the LTA system and neither did I, neither did Tim or
:29:29. > :29:40.Greg Rusedski. Other people have to go elsewhere. Is there a system?
:29:41. > :29:44.Clearly Heather, when she was 12, going to the States, huge decision,
:29:45. > :29:48.when she felt she had to make, she clearly did not think there was a
:29:49. > :29:53.system she could go into, one that would be successful, so you'll have
:29:54. > :29:57.to make other arrangements. I think that has happened with the LTA. They
:29:58. > :30:02.know they have to make changes. Now they are beginning to make good
:30:03. > :30:05.changes by ringing in Bob Brett as performance director and bringing
:30:06. > :30:11.people in that know the game so well -- bringing him in. Is it not just
:30:12. > :30:18.shovelling buttocks? I do hope that bringing in new people means making
:30:19. > :30:22.changes - shovelling the decks. Being around British tennis for a
:30:23. > :30:26.long time, trying to create a system with players in Britain, it doesn't
:30:27. > :30:31.seem to work in Britain. It comes from individuals making their own
:30:32. > :30:35.way. Sometimes not finding an easy part. Sometimes being close to
:30:36. > :30:39.leaving the game running out of money and maybe finding a way -- an
:30:40. > :30:44.easy path. Usually it comes from amazing parents who go the extra
:30:45. > :30:47.mile. From our generations, great coaches. That wonderful relationship
:30:48. > :30:52.with them, they see you through thick and thin. A good support
:30:53. > :30:56.network. Of course you need funding and help and this is where the LTA
:30:57. > :30:59.have played a good role. When I was on the tour there were things that
:31:00. > :31:06.they helped me with which would have been a struggle. One of the wise old
:31:07. > :31:10.Australian players once told me, you only value what you earn. When you
:31:11. > :31:17.don't have much support, you have to learn it. What you are given, not so
:31:18. > :31:21.much. Unfortunately, I always think the LT eight try to help players
:31:22. > :31:23.with the best of intentions but it is not helping them in many ways -
:31:24. > :31:42.the LTA. It takes away their hunger. going to Florida, I know players of
:31:43. > :31:54.Heather's generation who are not going to do that. That is what you
:31:55. > :32:04.have to do. There are some young boys coming through the juniors. I
:32:05. > :32:11.think Brett is going around making sure they are using the new coaching
:32:12. > :32:17.system, not the outdated one. We have always had good juniors. Tim
:32:18. > :32:23.was not a good junior, he blossomed later on. I am of the school that
:32:24. > :32:28.says so much effort has to go into the young kids, get great coaching,
:32:29. > :32:34.and that's when you need the support when you are really young, to get
:32:35. > :32:39.noticed at ten or 11 or 12. I really believe that if you are really good,
:32:40. > :32:44.and people are desperate to find British tennis players male or
:32:45. > :32:51.female, if you are really good you will make it happen. I always feel
:32:52. > :32:55.in Britain it all seems to go at the top end of the game instead of right
:32:56. > :33:01.at the start. If you look at Russia for example, all of their great
:33:02. > :33:07.coaches are at seven, eight, nine years of age. That is where their
:33:08. > :33:13.money goes. We have been having this conversation for a few years,
:33:14. > :33:20.haven't we? And we are going to keep having it, aren't we? I No, thank
:33:21. > :33:23.you very much! Tomorrow Andy Murray will be on Court Number One but
:33:24. > :33:55.let's have a look at Centre Court first up. The D -- lefty Dellacquia
:33:56. > :34:02.up against Radwanska. On Court One, Andy Murray is first up against Blaz
:34:03. > :34:10.Rola, expected to win comfortably but there is no such thing as an
:34:11. > :34:12.easy match in tennis. Andy Murray had a day off the show courts
:34:13. > :34:14.easy match in tennis. Andy Murray had a day off the show courts but he
:34:15. > :34:21.has been here on the practice courts, going from the routine that
:34:22. > :34:29.took him to the Wimbledon title one year ago. Amelie Mauresmo is behind
:34:30. > :34:33.him. And he plays tomorrow after a comfortable first day. It was an
:34:34. > :34:34.emotional return to the defending champion and we followed him every
:34:35. > :34:52.step of the way. So, Wimbledon is under way. The
:34:53. > :34:58.weather is glorious, there is so much excitement around the grounds
:34:59. > :35:02.and that is because Britain's Wimbledon champion is here. Andy
:35:03. > :35:08.relishes pressure here at Wimbledon and I think he did the hard work
:35:09. > :35:14.here last year, he will be fine. I expect to be nervous, I expect to
:35:15. > :35:20.feel the pressure. I hope that when I walk out there I can enjoy it for
:35:21. > :35:22.a few moments. After the first few games you settle into the match and
:35:23. > :35:38.it is fine. Ideal day, ideal start to his
:35:39. > :35:52.defence. He has a very firm hold on this
:35:53. > :36:30.opening-round match, leading 2-0. He overwhelmed the diminutive
:36:31. > :36:36.Belgian in the beginning couple, alt muscles him and Andy Murray moves
:36:37. > :36:41.swiftly into the second round. Sometimes you can win in three sets
:36:42. > :36:46.and not play well and it can be a scrappy match, but in terms of the
:36:47. > :36:58.way I struck the ball today, it was good. SUE BARKER: The crowd gave him
:36:59. > :37:05.a huge ovation when he walked onto the as champion. The big four all
:37:06. > :37:10.have to have at least one match on Court Number One, they cannot all
:37:11. > :37:26.stay on centre. Here is the scene after seven o'clock, people enjoying
:37:27. > :37:33.tennis still on the Hill. If none of -- we can join this match and
:37:34. > :37:42.watching this one is Virginia Wade and Jason Goodall.
:37:43. > :37:47.COMMENTATOR: It is an excellent service game from the Italian. Both
:37:48. > :37:54.girls have made great starts with a break of serve beach. Three apiece.
:37:55. > :37:56.Some good ball striking and particularly some excellent all
:37:57. > :38:19.court tennis from Ivanovic. Schiavone, holding her own pretty
:38:20. > :38:51.much. There haven't been too many wild
:38:52. > :38:57.backhands. Schiavone has been using a slice backhand to good effect,
:38:58. > :39:05.keeping the ball nice and low. We have kept remembering that Ivanovic
:39:06. > :39:12.is six foot tall and generally likes of all that sits up a little bit.
:39:13. > :39:19.That is great play. Has she made a mistake at the net? She has been
:39:20. > :39:24.very good. Both players have chosen their moments wisely to move
:39:25. > :39:48.forwards. Well I never! Old school. Some serve
:39:49. > :39:55.and volleying from Ivanovic, of course she has had three tournament
:39:56. > :39:59.victories this year, more recently in Birmingham. It is always
:40:00. > :40:02.important to come into the Championships with some confidence
:40:03. > :40:07.and if you are able to win one of the few tournaments you get to play
:40:08. > :40:13.before Wimbledon, it is a huge bonus. It really is. Changing
:40:14. > :40:19.surfaces, you need to spend time on the new surface. If you are going to
:40:20. > :40:24.play, you might have to spend more time adjusting to play on grass,
:40:25. > :40:30.depending on your style, but it is really good to see her in such good
:40:31. > :40:34.form. Since she won the French Open, she couldn't cope with the
:40:35. > :40:47.expectation on her. She started off that year and injured her thumb,
:40:48. > :40:55.which didn't help. I honestly think that Ivanovic, all of that
:40:56. > :40:59.extraneous attention for her was very difficult for her to cope with
:41:00. > :41:05.and keep her attention on the tennis, where it needed to be. Of
:41:06. > :41:12.course her best result here was in the semifinals in 2007. Of course
:41:13. > :41:22.she is a former world number one, now ranked just outside the top ten,
:41:23. > :41:27.11 in the world. New balls. I don't know who that is going to help
:41:28. > :41:35.actually. Usually it is the server, but maybe not.
:41:36. > :41:44.Just out, that ball. It is just hard to believe that neither of these
:41:45. > :41:52.players has done well at Wimbledon at all. It is hard to believe it is
:41:53. > :41:53.so long since Ivanovic was in the semifinal. Just hasn't been able to
:41:54. > :42:34.execute on the grass. What an angle! And superb variation
:42:35. > :42:37.because initially you had the heavily sliced backhand which was
:42:38. > :42:44.nice and deep, and coming on the outside edge of the ball on the
:42:45. > :42:52.forehand, causing all sorts of problems for Ivanovic. The sun
:42:53. > :43:01.hasn't quite gone down so it is always difficult for the players to
:43:02. > :43:03.pick the ball up there. Still the first server is not consistent
:43:04. > :43:24.enough, only 42% of first serves in. Too bad. I mean, obviously because
:43:25. > :43:28.it is grass we are seeing Francesca hit more slice backhands and
:43:29. > :43:32.sometimes the slice sits up a little bit but we have seen a few of her
:43:33. > :43:47.magnificent top-spin backhand is as well. -- backhands.
:43:48. > :44:09.She has been so aggressive with that second serve return position, well
:44:10. > :44:15.inside the baseline. That allows her to get the first strike in the
:44:16. > :44:22.rally. She really nailed that ball. It was coming right for us, Jason,
:44:23. > :44:32.in the commentary box, and it had something behind it. You didn't
:44:33. > :45:07.notice but I ducked behind you so I was OK! First serve paying off.
:45:08. > :45:25.A little disappointing for Schiavone not to win that point. She had her
:45:26. > :46:02.chances. Even those Schiavone's rankings have
:46:03. > :46:09.dropped a little bit, she is still fiercely competitive. One of the
:46:10. > :46:15.oldest women in the top 100, but still in superb physical shape. She
:46:16. > :46:17.sure is. She has to chase a lot of balls always when she plays, and she
:46:18. > :46:52.never gives up. That is an important hold. I think
:46:53. > :47:00.coming into the match, Virginia, many would have thought Ivanovic was
:47:01. > :47:04.a firm favourite here and might have won the match comfortably but
:47:05. > :47:08.Schiavone has played some wonderful tennis in this opening set. It has
:47:09. > :47:19.been a wonderful combination of styles. The issue for Ivanovic is in
:47:20. > :47:24.her desire to overpower Schiavone. She has got to be careful not to go
:47:25. > :47:28.for too much, she has got to be patient. This is the first time we
:47:29. > :47:46.have seen her do the toss over. That was a case of when the ball
:47:47. > :48:02.came right into the sun, I don't think she saw it terribly well.
:48:03. > :48:08.Fantastic shot. Wasn't absolutely the best serve out wide but it did
:48:09. > :48:17.open up the court for her. Probably a little distracting to
:48:18. > :48:35.have them shout out at this stage. Of course this is their first
:48:36. > :48:40.meeting on this particular surface but Ivanovic has had a lot of
:48:41. > :48:41.success against Schiavone in the past, winning all five of their
:48:42. > :49:16.meetings. So it is getting nice and tight at
:49:17. > :49:21.the tail end of this opening set. There has been some lovely variation
:49:22. > :49:25.that we have seen from both players. Particularly Schiavone on
:49:26. > :49:31.the backhand. We know that she prefers to play her tennis on a clay
:49:32. > :49:35.court, but on a grass court it is the sliced shots, particularly the
:49:36. > :49:47.backhand, that can work so effectively. The top-spin backhand
:49:48. > :49:53.here is the Reg Trail. The beauty of the slice is that it stays low. She
:49:54. > :49:59.has radical changes in the effect of the bounce on her backhand. Once in
:50:00. > :50:06.a while I like to see her utilising the slice against a tall player like
:50:07. > :50:11.Ivanovic, but sometimes on the backhand slice she gets a little too
:50:12. > :50:19.underneath the ball, knifing through it. It stands up a little bit. I'm
:50:20. > :50:26.impressed with the way Ivanovic is handling it. It is a big game,
:50:27. > :50:27.certainly Schiavone needs a lot more firsts nerves than she has been able
:50:28. > :50:56.to find as yet. She was ready and waiting. It is
:50:57. > :51:03.always risky approaching crosscourt to your opponent's forehand. An
:51:04. > :51:10.illustration in point of all of those backhands. She got them really
:51:11. > :51:36.deep and low, and showed us some top-spin as well.
:51:37. > :51:49.Bonus for Schiavone. In fact, I think that ball almost came up to
:51:50. > :51:55.short for Ivanovic. She didn't judge it as being that short. Her 10th
:51:56. > :52:12.unforced error. Look at this aggressive position
:52:13. > :52:15.that Ana takes up when she gets a look at the second serve. You can
:52:16. > :52:25.almost say that she burned the double there. -- earned. The second
:52:26. > :52:38.for the Italian. That is a huge difference, only 35%
:52:39. > :53:17.of points won when she misses it. Sometimes when you serve out wide to
:53:18. > :53:21.the forehand side, you don't quite get the angle on it and it goes
:53:22. > :53:40.right into the middle of the racket, the sweet spot of the opponent.
:53:41. > :53:54.Absolutely brilliant. Superb tennis from Schiavone.
:53:55. > :54:03.It is absolutely terrific to see Schiavone playing with such variety
:54:04. > :54:08.and skill. You remember when she won the French a few years ago how
:54:09. > :54:31.excited we were. We all loved it because she is one-of-a-kind.
:54:32. > :54:38.It is funny you mention that, because even though that was played
:54:39. > :54:47.on clay, which everyone thinks as primarily defensive, it was a real
:54:48. > :54:52.feature win, wasn't it? I remember even at the end when it got really
:54:53. > :54:59.tired, she just kept coming to the net. I think it was a tie-break in
:55:00. > :55:04.the second set, and so easy, especially on clay, to start getting
:55:05. > :55:08.nervous about coming in and getting past and you have to stay aggressive
:55:09. > :55:19.and she kept coming in, and it paid off.
:55:20. > :55:28.A good tactic to use on a grass court, but it behind your opponent.
:55:29. > :56:08.-- put it. this set? I always think so.
:56:09. > :57:13.Especially on grass. It has been highly competitive, both
:57:14. > :57:20.players attempting to raise the level of their game towards the end
:57:21. > :57:26.of this set. I think there were a few tame points in this game, which
:57:27. > :57:34.is something we haven't had. We have had every single point being really
:57:35. > :57:39.repeated through to the end, so let's see if Schiavone can pull
:57:40. > :57:44.herself together to play a good game here. We saw Ivanovic with some very
:57:45. > :57:49.good body language. Do you think that is a good thing or is she
:57:50. > :57:55.generally prone to overdoing it? I agree, she is generally prone to
:57:56. > :58:00.overdoing it a lot. It is such a necessity not to over celebrate
:58:01. > :58:05.because it raises your heart rate instead of what she is trying to do,
:58:06. > :58:12.really stay calm, but I didn't mind it then because it was getting a
:58:13. > :58:17.little tight at 5-5 and she needed to increase her adrenaline a little
:58:18. > :58:22.bit. But she has got to make a choice, Ivanovic, on whether she
:58:23. > :58:30.goes for broke on some of the points in this game.
:58:31. > :58:35.I don't know if that was all she could do or if that was going for
:58:36. > :59:02.broke. Definitely the latter. Ivanovic needs to still keep the
:59:03. > :59:31.patients quota. It is an ace! It is a lovely serve.
:59:32. > :59:32.Nigel was always asking her to get more height, elevation, spin,
:59:33. > :59:56.control. A great scoop up. Yes, I think
:59:57. > :00:02.Jason... As we all know, when you want to remain aggressive, you want
:00:03. > :00:04.to remain hitting the ball but you have got to put more spin on as a
:00:05. > :00:54.safety factor when you get nervous. net so far. Tactics working well. It
:00:55. > :01:24.has been a tight opening set. Only fitting that a tie-break will decide
:01:25. > :01:27.matters after 43 minutes. They have been to three sets a couple of times
:01:28. > :01:39.before but not for quite a long time. Once on clay. Way back, almost
:01:40. > :01:52.ten years ago, Ivanovic winning all the previous contests. A sensible
:01:53. > :01:58.forehand. She waited until she saw Ana Ivanovic moving one way or the
:01:59. > :02:02.other. One thing you can never accuse Francesca of is doing the
:02:03. > :02:26.wrong thing. She is always trying to do the right thing. And some lovely
:02:27. > :02:49.variation. Wonderful feel. Three very good points from her.
:02:50. > :03:12.It's just flattened out nicely, the serve. Good pace on that.
:03:13. > :03:23.That was an interesting shot. I got the feeling that Schiavone stopped
:03:24. > :03:26.because she thought she had hit it out and because she stopped Ivanovic
:03:27. > :03:32.looked over and saw that she had stopped and also thought the ball
:03:33. > :03:57.had gone out and hesitated. A bit of good fortune for Schiavone. Not what
:03:58. > :04:04.she wanted! Such a big difference. Changing ends with an advantage of
:04:05. > :04:10.5-1, compared to 4-2, a third double fault for the Italian. She rushed
:04:11. > :04:18.that second serve. Not something she's usually guilty of. Now it is
:04:19. > :04:50.for Ivanovic to maintain an interest in this tie-break. Very well played
:04:51. > :04:55.from Ivanovic. Tricky shot. Done nicely, brushed the back of the
:04:56. > :05:04.ball. Aggressive intent with the feet as well. Through the ball
:05:05. > :05:07.beautifully. -- throwing the ball beautifully. A couple of points, a
:05:08. > :05:09.bit of good fortune with the double fault, and Ivanovic is right back in
:05:10. > :05:58.it now. That is that! A superb pass. Always
:05:59. > :06:06.risky coming in crosscourt to your bone and's forehand. -- to your
:06:07. > :06:09.opponent's forehand. You have do follow the line of the ball as
:06:10. > :06:13.opposed to moving to the middle of the court. I thought that was the
:06:14. > :06:21.only place she could play that. She played it a little late, and boy,
:06:22. > :06:24.was that good! A big change from 1-4 to-4. Schiavone is under pressure
:06:25. > :06:54.now. - from 1-4 two 5-4. Accountability missed that one! Such
:06:55. > :06:58.a good rally. -- I cannot believe that she missed that one! A couple
:06:59. > :07:08.of digs from Schiavone, she had to work so hard to stay in the rally.
:07:09. > :07:11.Which she'd dare serve that whites to the forehand? -- would she dare
:07:12. > :07:46.serve that whites to the forehand? Disappointing for her, because she
:07:47. > :07:58.played an intelligent second serve, a slow, heavy, deep one.
:07:59. > :08:20.See if it gives any more little instructions, although nobody is
:08:21. > :08:24.looking at him. Plenty of drama throughout this first set but both
:08:25. > :08:29.are now getting a little tight, Virginia. With that forehand and
:08:30. > :08:33.backhand that she missed, Ivanovic, that had to be pure tension and
:08:34. > :08:36.indecision when it gets sites like that because she hasn't missed any
:08:37. > :08:44.of them. She has been hitting them so well. A Schmeichel when it gets
:08:45. > :08:47.tight, like that. The key for Ivanovic seems to be picking her
:08:48. > :08:55.target and hitting with a little more spin, keeping the ball, making
:08:56. > :09:01.sure that she hates it firmly. -- that he hits it firmly.
:09:02. > :09:39.Another chance to wrap up this opening set.
:09:40. > :09:50.And she does! A superb set of tennis but it is Ivanovic who eventually
:09:51. > :09:58.prevails after 52 minutes. Sub-6. -- 7-6. SUE BARKER: What an
:09:59. > :10:02.entertaining match, Ivanovic coming back in that tie-break to take the
:10:03. > :10:07.opening set. Let's take you around some of the other courts where play
:10:08. > :10:11.continues in the evening. Simona Halep is on Centre Court, you can
:10:12. > :10:16.watch this on the red button, she was recently runner-up at the French
:10:17. > :10:23.Open, and she is taking on Pereira of Brazil, Simona Halep has taken
:10:24. > :10:29.the opening set 6-2. On Court Number Two, Tara Moore of Great Britain, a
:10:30. > :10:35.wild card ranked 250 that her opponent Vera Zvonareva also needed
:10:36. > :10:40.a wildcard because her ranking is in and around 526, she has had a year
:10:41. > :10:44.and a half away from tennis because of surgery but she was once
:10:45. > :10:48.runner-up at Wimbledon. Zvonareva has a break of serve but a brave
:10:49. > :10:53.performance on Tara Moore, impressive last year at Wimbledon.
:10:54. > :11:01.Colour solids Navarro has won her match in straight sets. -- Carless
:11:02. > :11:07.Wallace Navarro. -- Carla Suarez Navarro. She is safely through.
:11:08. > :11:12.We've still got 20 minutes of live tennis to go before John is here
:11:13. > :11:16.with Today At Wimbledon. The highlights of a very entertaining
:11:17. > :11:17.day at the Championships. With 20 minutes to go, let's rejoin the
:11:18. > :11:30.action on Court One. So, Ana Ivanovic, one set to the
:11:31. > :11:35.good, had to battle bravely throughout the course of it, to get
:11:36. > :11:40.the better of Francesca Schiavone. Didn't have great form coming into
:11:41. > :11:44.this tournament, has not had the best of seasons, 1/3-round
:11:45. > :11:47.appearance was a highlight, but really rolled back the years and not
:11:48. > :11:53.opening set, played some sterling stuff. -- in that opening set. It
:11:54. > :11:57.was Ivanovic that opening set. It was Ivanovic came back and fought
:11:58. > :12:05.back bravely in the tie-break, coming from 4-1 down to eventually
:12:06. > :12:08.when it 8-6. Quite a discussion with the umpire at the changeover from
:12:09. > :12:15.front just go. They could not remember which side they were due to
:12:16. > :12:19.play. I believe the discussion was the fact that Ivanovic's coach is
:12:20. > :12:30.constantly, and it is still going on, making signs.
:12:31. > :12:42.As far as I could tell, as we picked up once, Ivanovic's coach was making
:12:43. > :12:55.hand signals all the time. That is illegal but a lot of coaches do it.
:12:56. > :13:03.It is going to be hard that Schiavone to pull herself together
:13:04. > :13:05.and regroup - -- for her to pull is off together and become motivated
:13:06. > :13:09.again after playing for almost one hour and losing one set. It might
:13:10. > :13:48.encourage her. She has served a couple of doubles
:13:49. > :13:50.now. Many of those have been because Ivanovic takes up this most
:13:51. > :13:58.aggressive position when she gets a look at the second serve. -- this
:13:59. > :14:02.nice, aggressive position. It can be intimidating for a server to glance
:14:03. > :14:12.up and see a player moving inside the baseline, ready to take the ball
:14:13. > :14:15.on the rise. It certainly is. How many times has she just connected
:14:16. > :14:23.very smoothly with that serve to the forehand? Schiavone has tried to mix
:14:24. > :14:29.it up and go really wide. That one was a little more to the middle, but
:14:30. > :14:40.many times Ivanovic has connected perfectly.
:14:41. > :14:56.We have not seen her kicking a ball yet, but she does that well! To a
:14:57. > :15:02.good! You didn't mention Italian football, did you? You know that is
:15:03. > :15:24.a no-no! LAUGHTER I didn't mention it, I promise! From
:15:25. > :15:32.40-15, deuce. She could not quite control it. It was a bit of a turn
:15:33. > :15:36.from Ivanovic. The problem for Schiavone has been that she doesn't
:15:37. > :15:41.get the width on that sliced serve, right into the hitting zone, nice
:15:42. > :15:45.variation from Ivanovic, she's been going crosscourt with the winning
:15:46. > :15:49.return lately, that one went up the line, keeping her opponent guessing
:15:50. > :16:01.and her reward is an opportunity to break now. Nicely done. Important
:16:02. > :16:05.not to panic on the big points, to stick with the patterns of play that
:16:06. > :16:10.you know have worked feel, not only throughout your career but in this
:16:11. > :16:31.particular match. -- the ones you know have worked for you.
:16:32. > :16:45.A better second serve, though. She tried to smother it and the kick
:16:46. > :16:46.just got it away from her. I don't think he's reading, I think he's
:16:47. > :17:13.taking a picture! Needed to work hard for the hold but
:17:14. > :17:18.got there in the end. And that has been a problem for Schiavone
:17:19. > :17:22.throughout the match. Her serve is one of the weaker shots and Ivanovic
:17:23. > :17:28.has had a specific game plan in mind when trying to return it. The yellow
:17:29. > :17:32.balls, her position of contact with the return, the blue Bulls represent
:17:33. > :17:35.the second serve so many of those second serve so well inside the
:17:36. > :17:40.baseline and that takes time away from Francesca. Definitely the right
:17:41. > :17:46.thing to do against somebody like Francesca, who varies her serve a
:17:47. > :17:53.lot, but are second serve doesn't have as much priority -- her second
:17:54. > :18:00.serve doesn't have as much rioting. Latterly she has kept the second
:18:01. > :18:06.serve deep, but that is a challenge. I'm not sure that Francesca was
:18:07. > :18:11.ready for the serve. That is the best time to serve, isn't it?
:18:12. > :18:18.LAUGHTER This time she's making sure that she
:18:19. > :18:20.is ready! Players who suffer from hay fever do not relish playing on
:18:21. > :18:51.the grass at Wimbledon. That is just perfect. Was this
:18:52. > :18:55.particularly difficult? She has had some magnificent sliced backhand
:18:56. > :18:58.is, but then she realises that it is just a defensive push back and then
:18:59. > :19:06.she comes into the net and she has the entire court. That is the key,
:19:07. > :19:12.realising that your opponent has to defend in that situation, then
:19:13. > :19:15.that's the right time to sneak in. Almost waiting until they have their
:19:16. > :19:23.heads down and studying the ball, and then they are not watching you!
:19:24. > :19:31.Just chasing that ball toss a bit. Around this time last night it
:19:32. > :19:38.started to shower. Should! -- This report contains flash photography. !
:19:39. > :19:50.Hash! All right. Ivanovic has added more to her game in this last six
:19:51. > :20:02.months. She started to play really well last year. It provides her with
:20:03. > :20:11.more options. Silk -- still troubled sometimes when the ball stays low be
:20:12. > :20:19.given but she is nice and tall. Not quite as good as any Oscar Radwanska
:20:20. > :20:37.and that shot. -- not quite as good as Agnieszka Radwanska at that shot.
:20:38. > :20:54.A superb strike. A high advancing serve that got a good steep return
:20:55. > :21:05.and somehow she manages to find the line, smack in the middle of the
:21:06. > :21:27.line. I feel as if the intensity has gone a little from Schiavone. I'm
:21:28. > :21:30.not sure if that is a problem. Schiavone is by nature a battler.
:21:31. > :21:38.And we mentioned before that the long much she played down in
:21:39. > :21:43.Melbourne -- that long much, four hours 44 minutes, took the record. I
:21:44. > :22:01.can't remember who won the match! She also played a marathon at the
:22:02. > :22:05.U.S. Open one year. And that one was against that really good Japanese
:22:06. > :22:11.player who isn't playing any more. I can look it up! It went on for three
:22:12. > :22:18.days. There was rain and it went on for hours and hours. It was
:22:19. > :22:27.incredible. And she won that one. She will remind you that she did win
:22:28. > :22:33.16-14 in the third set in Melbourne. The longest ever much there, as far
:22:34. > :22:48.as the women are concerned. -- the longest ever match there. Ai
:22:49. > :23:01.Sugiyama. That is the wonder of notes!
:23:02. > :23:09.Just tried to be too good with that one. Isn't it amazing, with the game
:23:10. > :23:13.that Schiavone has, and the fact that she has won the French Open,
:23:14. > :23:18.isn't it amazing that she hasn't done better on grass? It is a little
:23:19. > :23:23.late in her career now to expect her to go all the way bet she has
:23:24. > :23:30.certainly had many years when her tennis was so good, she could have.
:23:31. > :23:34.-- that she has had many years. The best result was the quarterfinal in
:23:35. > :23:51.2009, she has reached at least the quarterfinals in all four of the
:23:52. > :23:57.major tournaments. Just a little too flat, that final forehand.
:23:58. > :24:00.major tournaments. Just a little too flat, that Sometimes when the ball
:24:01. > :24:04.clipped the top of the net it is easy to get a little flat-footed in
:24:05. > :24:43.situations like that, dance around the top of the ball. SUE BARKER: She
:24:44. > :24:48.means business. We'll be back with this much in a moment. Let's update
:24:49. > :24:51.you on Centre Court. Last time we were there Simona Halep had taken
:24:52. > :24:54.the first set against Paire of Brazil, 6-2. She means business.
:24:55. > :24:57.We'll be back with this much in a moment. Let's update you on Centre
:24:58. > :25:01.Court. Last time we were there Simona Halep had taken the first set
:25:02. > :25:06.against Paire of Brazil, 6-2. She is well on her way to round two. That
:25:07. > :25:14.match is on the red button and so is this one. Tara Moore against Vera
:25:15. > :25:18.Zvonareva. Zvonareva was one break at them the first set and has taken
:25:19. > :25:22.that one, they are in the early stages of the second set so the
:25:23. > :25:29.British wildcard, Tara Moore, is battling on, on Court Two. That is
:25:30. > :25:33.on the red button. Simona Halep will be online so you can watch her much
:25:34. > :25:37.online. We are staying with this much for the next few minutes but
:25:38. > :25:41.coverage is starting on the red button so to keep watching this you
:25:42. > :25:45.can keep watching by using the red button although in a few minutes
:25:46. > :25:50.John will be here with all the highlights of today's play. For the
:25:51. > :26:00.next few minutes we are staying on Court One. Of course it has been a
:26:01. > :26:06.competitive start to the second set, as it was for much of the first set.
:26:07. > :26:13.A few dark clouds in the distance. Fingers crossed we will get through
:26:14. > :26:18.the match without any interruptions. A downpour that sent the players
:26:19. > :26:22.scuttling to Bill Groom. The referee made a quick decision to send
:26:23. > :26:28.everyone home. Many of the matches had to be finished earlier today.
:26:29. > :26:32.These two will hope this one can get finished as well, nothing worse than
:26:33. > :26:36.a sleepless night worrying about the outcome of a match and having to
:26:37. > :26:49.come back the next day to finish it. No breaks of serve in the second set
:26:50. > :26:52.as yet. New balls. 1-2. I am not sure that Schiavone meant to hit the
:26:53. > :27:09.ball so short but it was certainly effective. It will be hard to scoop
:27:10. > :27:14.up. That is awfully good, isn't it? We saw that in the opening set,
:27:15. > :27:19.superb control of the volley. It's always tempting to go deep but the
:27:20. > :27:22.short one is the more effective one. Schiavone did well to get the ball
:27:23. > :28:32.to come down on her toes and she handled the volley so well.
:28:33. > :28:40.SUE BARKER: We are running out of time, just ten seconds to see the
:28:41. > :28:47.end of this rally, which Schiavone has one. We'll be back tomorrow at
:28:48. > :28:53.11:30am. Stay tuned for John with Today at Wimbledon, coming next.
