:02:29. > :02:33.She is an code number one. We will also be following Heather Watson,
:02:34. > :02:37.the British number one. It is her fifth appearance at Wimbledon. She
:02:38. > :02:42.reached the third round in 2012 and she has been in tremendous form this
:02:43. > :02:48.summer. This was the scene when the gates opened this morning and they
:02:49. > :02:52.all walked patiently in. But they are all trying to get the best view
:02:53. > :02:55.because there is a star-studded line-up today. Here are the matches
:02:56. > :03:01.we will be following here on BBC One.
:03:02. > :03:07.Two-time champion Rafael Nadal suffered a first round shock defeat
:03:08. > :03:10.last year. The world hopes history will not repeat itself today.
:03:11. > :03:25.last year. The world hopes history will
:03:26. > :03:33.Roger Federer has won seven titles at the all England club. He is on
:03:34. > :03:38.Court number one against Paolo Lorenzi.
:03:39. > :03:48.Ten years since Maria first won Wimbledon and she is still winning
:03:49. > :03:51.big titles. The newly crowned French champion plays Samantha Murray on
:03:52. > :03:55.Court one. And after the illness, Heather

:05:05. > :05:13.through in straight sets today. -- what a summer.
:05:14. > :05:18.So that is some results from earlier today. We will just take you around
:05:19. > :05:27.the grounds and show you what is happening live at the moment. Over
:05:28. > :05:30.on centre court, Sabine Lisicki has started well against Julia Glushko.
:05:31. > :05:36.That will be on the red button shortly.
:05:37. > :05:45.On Court three, Leyton Hewitt is involved in a battle but he is used
:05:46. > :05:49.to those. That match will be on BBC Two very soon.
:05:50. > :06:02.Add on court 17, Yaniv Fitch, the man that Andy Murray beat in the
:06:03. > :06:13.Senate files last year. -- Jesse Yaniv Fitch.
:06:14. > :06:22.see the great man, Roger Federer, number four seed. Five games to one
:06:23. > :06:34.serving against Paolo Lorenzo. Let's watch this against Tim Henman and
:06:35. > :07:13.Simon Read. SIMON READ: Federer looking good.
:07:14. > :07:24.Lorenzi is ranked 83 in the world. He has not won a grandson match. --
:07:25. > :07:45.a Grand Slam match. He had a decent backhand volley. I
:07:46. > :08:05.think he missed one in about 1986, I think was the last one.
:08:06. > :08:17.Federer started pretty much at the baseline but is coming forward more
:08:18. > :08:35.and more now. Good placement from Federer. Not the
:08:36. > :08:44.fastest serves BC, at 190 mph, but the variation of the placement is
:08:45. > :08:50.good. Not the first time he has been picked off on his run forward. A
:08:51. > :09:08.good serve but Federer is not the most natural mover at the net.
:09:09. > :09:16.And that hasn't changed even though he has won all the tournaments? He
:09:17. > :09:18.has not really won them from the net, so his natural instinct is not
:09:19. > :09:49.as good as some. The conditions of the game have
:09:50. > :09:52.changed and sometimes he ends up covering the middle. There is the
:09:53. > :10:33.first set, 6-1. Those are the stats. The yellow is
:10:34. > :10:43.the person who has done better in those particular areas. Very
:10:44. > :10:51.impressive. How would you rate that?
:10:52. > :10:57.Certainly a very good start. The first round is never easy in any
:10:58. > :11:02.tournament. I am sure there would have been a few early nerves so
:11:03. > :11:08.Federer. Certainly 6-1 in under half an hour, he will be very happy and
:11:09. > :11:32.keen to build on that in the second set.
:11:33. > :11:43.The fans that follow him are all the way around the world. He will be
:11:44. > :11:48.enjoying peace and hoping it lasts a little while longer. -- they will be
:11:49. > :12:57.enjoying this. Federer has such good racket head
:12:58. > :13:05.speed. It only needs to be about a millimetre out for a big mis-hit.
:13:06. > :13:13.A bit awkward, there. Lorenzi lost his serve in his first service game
:13:14. > :13:17.in the first set. He needs to try to build a bit of pressure with the
:13:18. > :13:18.scoreboard, if he can build pressure early on, just keep his nose in
:13:19. > :13:42.front. Lamenting looking down at the grass,
:13:43. > :14:59.but I do not think there is any problem there.
:15:00. > :15:07.That is just soft mistake. He played a couple of good points to get back
:15:08. > :15:11.from 15-42 to use, and then it is just a rallying shop. Can't afford
:15:12. > :15:20.to make those mistakes against anyone, let alone Federer. -- he
:15:21. > :15:24.paid a few good points to get back from 15 to 40, two to use, and then
:15:25. > :16:24.it is just a rallying shot. Lorenzi must have feared that when
:16:25. > :16:31.he came in, but he had no other option. The right shot, set the
:16:32. > :16:36.point of well but you see that approach shot just landing over the
:16:37. > :16:38.service lines. Gives Federer time was the ball has bounced just to
:16:39. > :17:08.pick up the passing shot. Just a growl from Federer. You can
:17:09. > :17:10.see where Lorenzi's approach shot landed there, got the defensive
:17:11. > :17:18.reply from Federer. Third ace. Another 100 of those and
:17:19. > :18:49.we will have a match our hands. Great instincts! Lorenzi saves the
:18:50. > :19:13.four break points. Congratulations to him. Federer,
:19:14. > :19:19.multi-zillionaire, father of four, but I do not see any lessening of
:19:20. > :19:23.intensity. Absolutely not, and from what I hear from the training
:19:24. > :19:27.camps, he has been working incredibly hard, and that is a great
:19:28. > :19:30.sign because he knows that if he is not improving he will get left
:19:31. > :19:42.behind, and he still has a massive passion for the game.
:19:43. > :19:50.I think there has always been talk in the press of, when is he going to
:19:51. > :19:54.retire? When should he retire? I just think while he has got a
:19:55. > :20:14.passion and a love for the game, he should play as long as he can.
:20:15. > :20:23.There was a period last year when he was being picked off by players he
:20:24. > :20:24.would normally beat. That was more injury related. His back had not
:20:25. > :20:34.been good. He had not been able to train as
:20:35. > :20:38.much as he would like. And I think because he makes the game look
:20:39. > :20:39.ridiculously easy, people do not appreciate the work that goes into
:20:40. > :20:57.it. UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Certainly
:20:58. > :21:07.made that look easy. And he has brought in fact life. -- that man.
:21:08. > :22:30.Only they know what difference he has made to Federer's game.
:22:31. > :24:18.It is the challenge to try to get foreign -- Federer on the back foot.
:24:19. > :24:25.And that is when the shoe is on the other foot. Lorenzi could not get on
:24:26. > :25:16.the offensive. It was Federer that was dictating play.
:25:17. > :25:30.He certainly did, and you get a feel from watching these rallies who has
:25:31. > :25:34.the upper hand and who can turn defence into attack. Federer was
:25:35. > :25:39.slightly on top in the rally and then Lorenzi got an opportunity. He
:25:40. > :25:55.would certainly like that backhand volley again.
:25:56. > :26:12.Too long. Federer breaks. He has a firmer grip on the match.
:26:13. > :26:17.I want to delve deeper into your statement a few minutes ago about
:26:18. > :26:21.Federer having a passion to play the game. Is it possible to
:26:22. > :26:26.differentiate passion for playing the game and a passion for success?
:26:27. > :26:30.A lot of people would say, yes, he wants to carry on playing the game,
:26:31. > :26:38.he obviously loves it, but there does come a point where he is less
:26:39. > :26:43.successful where he would say, that is enough. The two go hand in hand.
:26:44. > :26:48.He always loved the game and started as a youngster. But it is linked to
:26:49. > :26:53.success because we all know it is much more fun winning and losing.
:26:54. > :27:00.The challenge will be when his form does dip, and it will do eventually.
:27:01. > :27:06.He cannot play forever. It will be interesting to see when he is not
:27:07. > :27:09.winning all the tournaments whether that passion remains. Right now he
:27:10. > :27:15.is one of the favourites for this tournament. The other players move
:27:16. > :27:20.so well. They can take the ball early on a hard court. But certainly
:27:21. > :27:25.on grass, even the way he moves and how offensive he is, you would
:27:26. > :28:22.definitely give him a good chance this fortnight.
:28:23. > :28:29.This is where it is very hard for Lorenzi. He is desperately trying to
:28:30. > :28:32.get a foothold in the match, and once a Federer gets in the league,
:28:33. > :28:42.he's one of the best front runners. -- once Federer gets in the lead.
:28:43. > :29:08.Rapid holes. -- I rapid hold. becomes more aggressive and that is
:29:09. > :30:55.worrying for his opponent. APPLAUSE
:30:56. > :30:56.Just occasionally, he looks a real threat, Lorenzi, with a few moments
:30:57. > :31:41.like that. A slight mis-hit. Federer just
:31:42. > :31:46.questioning. And he is going to challenge. It's not his favourite
:31:47. > :31:53.piece of technology. But he'll still have a go at it.
:31:54. > :32:01.Never grown to love it, has he? He doesn't mind it when he gets a call
:32:02. > :32:22.reversed. I really don't quite understand why
:32:23. > :32:27.he doesn't like it because at the end of the day you don't want bad
:32:28. > :32:31.calls influencing a match and it's a very, very difficult job calling the
:32:32. > :32:48.linesman, the ball is travelling so fast.
:32:49. > :32:54.Gives his raquet a little shake. He enjoyed that. When you've got the
:32:55. > :32:56.option of technology to clarify calls, I think it's a brilliant
:32:57. > :33:27.addition to the game. So another break and it's 4-1.
:33:28. > :33:36.UMPIRE: Federer leads 4-1. Only 48 minutes. The crowd have been
:33:37. > :33:45.lapping it up. Inside here, there's our court. Still called Henman Hill?
:33:46. > :33:50.Was that a question? Hm. Of course. What else could it be called? Well,
:33:51. > :33:56.I did hear someone in the restaurant this morning called it Murray Mound
:33:57. > :34:06.and I thought no, you've got squatters rights, slander.
:34:07. > :34:13.Very difficult to get a grip on this match. You said what a good front
:34:14. > :34:18.runner he is. There has been criticism about him that when he
:34:19. > :34:24.goes behind, he's stubborn, he doesn't really go to a plan B, he
:34:25. > :34:29.won't compromise. Do you buy into that? Well, he certainly does have
:34:30. > :34:33.different game plans and styles. Certainly when your A game has been
:34:34. > :34:40.so good and successful, I think in his mind, if he's not playing well,
:34:41. > :34:46.his first resort is to play better, to improve plan A that when he's in
:34:47. > :34:50.this type of form and situation in a match, he's so good at being
:34:51. > :35:00.aggressive and finishing the job off in a pretty short period of time.
:35:01. > :35:30.Oh, fantastic! There's one for the papers tomorrow.
:35:31. > :35:37.Federer is definitely trying to serve and volley a little bit more
:35:38. > :35:41.and be a bit more aggressive. UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenging the
:35:42. > :35:51.ball on the right. The ball's not out. Almost under his breath.
:35:52. > :36:00.And he's got it. What's not to love about Hawkeye in a situation like
:36:01. > :36:17.that? Looks like he's having a really good
:36:18. > :36:55.time at the moment. That for me shows in actual fact a
:36:56. > :37:01.frailty on Federer's volley. It's a nice serve, but poor volley.
:37:02. > :37:13.UMPIRE: Game Federer. The gap opening ceremony even wider. It's
:37:14. > :37:17.all well and good. All well and good serving a volley and when you're up
:37:18. > :37:22.against a guy that's never won a Grand Slam match, it's whether this
:37:23. > :37:25.type of game plan can really work against one of the best players in
:37:26. > :37:27.the world. That is a challenge because it would be a good element
:37:28. > :39:24.of his game to have working well. UMPIRE: Game second set. The second
:39:25. > :39:43.was easier than the first. No wonder Stephan is smiling. We'll
:39:44. > :39:54.be right back here, but let us show you some results from outside.
:39:55. > :39:57.Radwanska, the runner-up beating her opponent of Romania. That was
:39:58. > :40:06.completed after rain stopped play last night, so was this one with
:40:07. > :40:19.Wozniacki. She beat Peer comfortably. Next for Caroline,
:40:20. > :40:25.Naomi Broady, the wild card. Lisicki was on court as runner-up.
:40:26. > :40:31.Bartoli has retired. She wasn't on court long, lost just three games to
:40:32. > :40:45.Glushko. So back to winning ways. We'll continue to follow this match
:40:46. > :40:51.out on court 17 which has gone the distance between Janowicz and
:40:52. > :40:56.Devvarman. It's 2-1. He's just lost a break point there, but if you want
:40:57. > :41:22.to watch that match, it's live on the red button.
:41:23. > :41:29.Maria will be getting ready for his match next on Court One and it may
:41:30. > :41:33.not be far away with Federer in control, one set away from the
:41:34. > :41:41.second round. It's Sharapova against Britain's Sam Murray, that's next,
:41:42. > :41:46.but let's rejoin Tim Henman and Simon Read, our commentators.
:41:47. > :41:48.FORCEDWHITE SIMON READ: Looks like much of the same. TIM HENMAN: Great
:41:49. > :42:23.volley. Really decisive. Good angle TIM HENMAN: Lorenzi thought he was
:42:24. > :42:25.going to go for the slower kick outwide and be able to hit it down
:42:26. > :42:37.the middle. FORCEDWHITE SIMON READ: Looks
:42:38. > :42:42.perfectly relaxed at the moment. Is there an element with this volley
:42:43. > :42:47.which is that it looks like it's coming back a little bit in the
:42:48. > :42:54.game? Also to protect his legs to a certain extent that, he doesn't want
:42:55. > :42:59.to get involved in too many rallies? I think it's minister to do with an
:43:00. > :43:02.element of surprise. He is serving and volleying 31% behind his first
:43:03. > :43:06.serve, so only three in ten, but at least it's going to put that element
:43:07. > :43:11.of doubt into his opponent's mind, is he going to serve volley and stay
:43:12. > :43:17.back, how do I hit the return and it's not really going to influence
:43:18. > :43:20.the outcome of this match, he's dominating it comfortably. Certainly
:43:21. > :43:23.against the better players in the second week, that's where it is
:43:24. > :43:50.important, just to be serving and volleying a point again.
:43:51. > :43:57.There must have been a few nerves even for Federer as he came in. They
:43:58. > :44:18.may have gone now. Starting to feel sorry for Lorenzi
:44:19. > :44:20.at the minute. Slightly concerned that Federer might charge him for
:44:21. > :46:14.this lesson. Decent ratio? I think it's a good
:46:15. > :46:19.sign when Federer's finishing the point at the net, you know,
:46:20. > :46:22.sometimes using the serve and volley, looking to come in behind
:46:23. > :47:25.the forehand sometimes, but it means he's on the front foot.
:47:26. > :47:28.APPLAUSE Wonder if there's too much respect
:47:29. > :48:08.there. The less said about that point, the better. Yes.
:48:09. > :48:25.UMPIRE: Game Federer. APPLAUSE
:48:26. > :48:32.Talk about his passion for playing and winning. I wonder if just a part
:48:33. > :48:36.of that is Rafa Nadal who lingers just three Grand Slams behind him?
:48:37. > :48:40.It's very interesting and it's amazing how, you know, that rivally
:48:41. > :48:46.has evolved over the years and certainly going back to the 200
:48:47. > :48:51.final, that was the best match I've ever seen, it was incredible, Rafa's
:48:52. > :48:58.first title here and Federer was really racking up the grand slams -
:48:59. > :49:02.2008. When he passed Sampras and got to 15, 16 and now at 17, you just
:49:03. > :49:06.thought, can that ever be reached and Rafa on the back of the French
:49:07. > :49:11.Open's been slowly accumulating and now he's up to 14, just won his
:49:12. > :49:15.ninth French. I never thought that he would be able to catch him, but
:49:16. > :49:20.certainly my opinion has changed over the last couple of years and I
:49:21. > :49:26.really wouldn't be surprised if Rafa can certainly get up to 17, if not
:49:27. > :49:51.more. Just about to start on Centre Court.
:49:52. > :50:00.Off the top of the forget. Made it impossible for Lorenzi and had it
:50:01. > :50:35.virtually on the baseline. -- the net.
:50:36. > :50:53.I sometimes watch Federer volley like that and almost feel that the
:50:54. > :51:06.harder the volley is, the better he actually executes the shot.
:51:07. > :51:12.APPLAUSE I wonder on a personal level,
:51:13. > :51:16.watching Federer, you beat him six times, are you thinking, I did all
:51:17. > :51:21.right? Not in these conditions that's for sure. It was on quicker
:51:22. > :51:24.courts where I felt I could take his time away and when I got the
:51:25. > :51:32.position at the net, I was the favourite. Certainly one year when
:51:33. > :52:00.he beat me here, I wasn't the favourite.
:52:01. > :52:18.Even he would have been impressed if he had have made that shot.
:52:19. > :52:34.UMPIRE: Advantage Federer. Just can't let Federer be stepping into a
:52:35. > :52:37.passing shot, you have to get him on the defensive. If he can step in,
:52:38. > :54:09.he's going to put you off. Listen to the crowd. They want every
:54:10. > :54:32.extra minute they can get out of this match.
:54:33. > :54:38.UMPIRE: Deuce. A collective groan but the coach
:54:39. > :55:03.liked it. APPLAUSE
:55:04. > :55:38.Advantage Lorenzi. APPLAUSE
:55:39. > :55:50.It's like he's won the match. And feeling appreciated.
:55:51. > :55:57.We love Italians really. He's competed well. He's enjoyed it out
:55:58. > :56:46.there and he's hanging in for what it's worth.
:56:47. > :57:44.APPLAUSE Nearly pulled it off.
:57:45. > :58:07.UMPIRE: Game Federer. It stands now at 4-1.
:58:08. > :58:23.He won't be feeling too unhappy having got his game in the third
:58:24. > :58:28.set. It's tough when this happens. A lot
:58:29. > :58:33.of other courts around the world, that ball would have hit the Ball
:58:34. > :58:35.tape and flown way over the baseline.
:58:36. > :58:40.Only a certain amount of tension that you can put between the two net
:58:41. > :58:47.posts, otherwise they'll collapse, so this sell isn't the tightest net
:58:48. > :58:59.there is. The ball really pings off the net in the US.
:59:00. > :59:01.Last year Federer was bundled out of the second round here.
:59:02. > :59:04.Last year Federer was bundled out of the second round Yes, if we allow
:59:05. > :59:13.ourselves to look a little further ahead, in the next round, if Federer
:59:14. > :59:16.comes through this, he'll play Muller or Beneto, both big servers.
:59:17. > :59:35.Both have grass court pedigree. Muller, who is from Belgium, big
:59:36. > :59:41.lefty serve, has been playing mainly on the challenges circuit this year.
:59:42. > :01:16.Has won one or two tournaments and qualified here.
:01:17. > :02:29.Lorenzi coming in on a pair of twos, there.
:02:30. > :02:44.UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Federer again away.
:02:45. > :03:00.Fascinating shot. They are absolutely loving it. On a day like
:03:01. > :03:06.this, just give us a job! It must be great to coach Roger Federer. What
:03:07. > :03:10.you think he added? I think it is more on the mental side. Perhaps a
:03:11. > :03:20.little bit to do with strategy, and obviously big match experience. The
:03:21. > :03:25.won six Grand Slams, twice here in 1988 and 1990. The game has changed
:03:26. > :03:29.a massive amount but any time you have an opportunity of picking the
:03:30. > :03:37.brains of a great champion, it is definitely worthwhile. I was
:03:38. > :03:43.surprised that Roger got a burger is part of his team. I did not really
:03:44. > :03:58.see it coming but I think it is a great addition. -- Federer got
:03:59. > :04:21.Edberg as part of his team. And also keeping things fresh.
:04:22. > :04:24.Certainly at the age of 32, he has been playing pretty much at the
:04:25. > :04:26.highest level since he was about 18, and having a bit of fresh input is
:04:27. > :04:46.good. Federer looks like he's absolutely
:04:47. > :05:57.fed up with himself. Lorenzi would have enjoyed that,
:05:58. > :06:23.between Federer on grass. Doesn't happen too often.
:06:24. > :06:35.I think he's going to challenge. No, he nodded up.
:06:36. > :08:14.Looked like Federer wanted to finish on a winner.
:08:15. > :09:34.A flashing blade moving Florenzi around pretty easily there.
:09:35. > :09:42.Now, perversely, there is more applause when Federer loses a point
:09:43. > :10:33.and when he wins it. They just want to see as much as they possibly can.
:10:34. > :12:12.There has been a fair amount of aggressive backhands.
:12:13. > :12:19.It is almost like Federer was showboating at that point, wanted to
:12:20. > :13:08.finish on the cleanest, hardest, most well struck shot of the match.
:13:09. > :13:13.He is going to challenge. Well, he has got three challenges remaining.
:13:14. > :14:33.He might as well. The crowd are loving this. I do not
:14:34. > :15:19.think it is time for the camp to get too nervous just yet.
:15:20. > :15:31.And almighty cheer to the Italian. It shows the magnitude of the task.
:15:32. > :15:36.Saluting the crowd every game he wins. Even the Federer fans are
:15:37. > :16:20.clapping loudly, because they get just a little bit more.
:16:21. > :17:13.He certainly played that point a bit more cautiously.
:17:14. > :17:43.First double fault of the match her Federer. -- full Federer. Surely
:17:44. > :18:02.coincidence. So here is match point number six.
:18:03. > :18:11.But with one crucial difference. He has the ammunition.
:18:12. > :18:23.Is he going to challenge? He has challenged. I think it was out.
:18:24. > :18:39.Very nearly. The terrific opponent, an a lovely afternoon here on Court
:18:40. > :18:53.One. The players have delighted everyone here. Some glorious
:18:54. > :19:05.moments. We were privileged to see the hour and 33 minutes.
:19:06. > :19:12.Paolo Lorenzi actually played his part. He did. He was always going to
:19:13. > :19:18.be up against it. Never won a Grand Slam and lost his previous match, --
:19:19. > :19:21.previous 12 matches, but he went there and played some good points.
:19:22. > :19:33.Getting a fantastic reception from the Court One crowd. So he departs
:19:34. > :19:43.without giving an ovation, but so, too, for Federer. You regard him as
:19:44. > :19:48.a contender here? Absolutely. It was the ideal start. He is serving at
:19:49. > :19:52.70% first serves, winning good advantage on first and second
:19:53. > :20:01.serves. He did not drop serve all afternoon. He will realise that
:20:02. > :20:11.appreciate that challenges are going to get tougher as he progresses
:20:12. > :20:15.throughout the fortnight. He is looking into the eyes of the people
:20:16. > :20:29.around him. Talk about his passion for the game.
:20:30. > :20:38.He may be a coat of the step slower, but the shot making is still
:20:39. > :20:41.glorious. Most definitely on this surface. When he's getting on the
:20:42. > :20:47.front foot and dictating with his serve and dominating with his
:20:48. > :20:55.forehand, he is still going to be a match for everyone. It will still be
:20:56. > :21:00.fantastic in ten days' time if we can have the four top seeds through
:21:01. > :21:07.to the men's semifinals. And he never seems to be in a hurry.
:21:08. > :21:16.They're signing virtually everyone's autograph.
:21:17. > :21:22.A very happy crowd here on Court One. They have seen the master at
:21:23. > :21:54.work. The hour and 33 minutes just flew
:21:55. > :21:58.by. He dropped just five games. Congratulations. An excellent
:21:59. > :22:03.performance, which would have given you a lot of pleasure? Yes, I'm very
:22:04. > :22:10.happy always getting through my first round. The grass is very green
:22:11. > :22:14.and slippery sometimes, so it is nice to get the win and I thought I
:22:15. > :22:19.played very well. Got a lot of breaks, served well and played some
:22:20. > :22:23.transition game coming to the net, so I'm happy. In the way it is the
:22:24. > :22:31.perfect performance for your first match here in 2014? Yes, you want to
:22:32. > :22:38.feel eager to play, motivate, inspired, and also wanting to not
:22:39. > :22:41.just win the first round, but not underestimating anybody but trying
:22:42. > :22:44.to win the tournament. That is why I'm here again, and getting the
:22:45. > :22:49.first one out of the way is good. You talk about him motivated and
:22:50. > :22:53.inspired. We talked about that the other day. As soon as he walked out,
:22:54. > :22:57.I suppose even you, although you have walked out here hundreds of
:22:58. > :23:02.times, it gives even you a lift? Have you met yes, and walking down
:23:03. > :23:07.the tunnel, I am very laid-back and casual. -- yes, walking down the
:23:08. > :23:13.tunnel, I am very laid-back and cashable. But there is that moment
:23:14. > :23:18.where it is like, OK, here we go, and you do feel some pressure. And
:23:19. > :23:24.thought on your opponent. A lovely character. The crowd liked how he
:23:25. > :23:30.died but he has won his last 12 matches, has not won a grandson. Do
:23:31. > :23:38.you feel a little bit sorry for him? -- he has not won a Grand Slam. I
:23:39. > :23:41.did not know his record, to be honest. I know he can serve-volleys
:23:42. > :23:47.on the grass and that is always nice to see. He did a good job forcing it
:23:48. > :23:52.tried to make plays but maybe he did not serve as big as maybe you have
:23:53. > :23:55.to days on the grass, to serve-volley consistently. The
:23:56. > :24:03.feeling sorry bit, honestly, I had a little bit in the juniors, when you
:24:04. > :24:08.think, the other guy is better than I am, he deserves it more. But that
:24:09. > :24:14.has all gone. I have put in my fair share of hard work, and you feel
:24:15. > :24:20.like you deserve it, always! You deserved it today. Thank you. SUE
:24:21. > :24:24.BARKER: The ultimate competitor. A perfect start the Roger. Just three
:24:25. > :24:31.men over the age of 30 have won Wimbledon. You would be very brave
:24:32. > :24:36.to bet against him this year with his Wimbledon record. Seven times,
:24:37. > :24:42.he has been the champion here. Gary mentioned poor old Paolo Lorenzo's
:24:43. > :24:51.record in Grand Slams -- Paolo Lorenzi. It is the second worst in
:24:52. > :24:59.Grand Slam history. Only a Costa Rican has a worse record. Federer is
:25:00. > :25:03.three and his great rival is over on Centre Court at the moment. They are
:25:04. > :25:09.in the same half of the draw this year, Rafael Nadal, and it is quite
:25:10. > :25:13.a struggle with a tricky opponent. He was down break points in the
:25:14. > :25:20.opening game. It is life over on BBC Two. Martin Kitson took a set of him
:25:21. > :25:27.over in Paris a couple of years ago. On Court Two, ground itch of Canada
:25:28. > :25:38.is having a great day. He is up against Matthew Ebdon of Australia.
:25:39. > :25:45.-- me last round itch. Heather Watson has just started her campaign
:25:46. > :25:50.out on Court three. She has got a tough match against a player just
:25:51. > :25:58.ranked seven places above her. So Heather in action against Ireland
:25:59. > :26:07.Tomljanovic of Croatia. -- Ajla Tomljanovic. A couple of results to
:26:08. > :26:13.bring you. Late in the is through. The champion here in 2002. Had a bit
:26:14. > :26:17.of a battle on his hands against his Polish opponent, but he won it in
:26:18. > :26:26.four to the delight of the Aussie fans on courtside. The former
:26:27. > :26:32.champion is through. You will need -- he will need to be at his best in
:26:33. > :26:38.the next round as well as he will face Jerzey Janowicz of Poland. He
:26:39. > :26:47.was taken in the distance by his Indian opponent, and won it 6-3 in
:26:48. > :26:50.the final set. We will be looking forward to Maria Sharapova walking
:26:51. > :26:55.out on Court One in a moment but first, a word about Roger Federer.
:26:56. > :27:00.Ultimate competitor, as I said. He will not feel sorry for his
:27:01. > :27:03.opponent, will he? Never. What a perfect opening-round match. He was
:27:04. > :27:07.able to play the style of tennis he wants to play. As he said, he was
:27:08. > :27:15.working on his transition quite a bit. That is what Edberg is trying
:27:16. > :27:20.to get him to do, come to net more. He played well and he will be happy
:27:21. > :27:25.with his first-round performance. Particularly with what happened last
:27:26. > :27:31.year. He wants to put the record straight, having lost, which was
:27:32. > :27:34.such a big shock. He does not underestimate anybody in the first
:27:35. > :27:39.round now. He had an amazing streak of Grand Slam finals will stop that
:27:40. > :27:45.came to an end and he does not want to give away too much in the early
:27:46. > :27:49.rounds. He will try to get through a bit more comfortably and quickly so
:27:50. > :27:58.he gets to the quarterfinal, semifinal stage with those reserves.
:27:59. > :28:01.And Rafael Nadal, a tricky opponent who has done well in other
:28:02. > :28:07.tournaments. He could do with an easier start, couldn't he? He lost
:28:08. > :28:16.in the second round and first round the last two times. He has a tough
:28:17. > :28:25.draw all the wealth through -- all the way through. Rafael Michelle
:28:26. > :28:29.came in and how he was talking, he said he is better this year --
:28:30. > :28:33.Nadal. He said that his Kudryavtseva is responding better. -- he said
:28:34. > :28:35.that his is responding better. -- he said
:28:36. > :28:39.that knee is responding better. If it is at all compromised, it is
:28:40. > :28:46.virtually impossible for him to play well. Such an unforgiving surface,
:28:47. > :28:49.the grass. We are looking forward to Maria Sharapova, up against the
:28:50. > :28:55.British wild card Sam Murray. We spoke to summary earlier and now she
:28:56. > :28:59.is with her very excited family. I'm joined by Sam Murray's family before
:29:00. > :29:08.they head into Court One. Nervous, I imagine. Dad, how are the nerves?
:29:09. > :29:14.Tilting up now. We have been waiting for this moment. We are about to go
:29:15. > :29:19.in, proud, excited and the nerves are starting to work. I caught up
:29:20. > :29:23.with some early on and she seemed cool and calm but I suppose it is
:29:24. > :29:31.always harder for the family. Yes, some seems to handle it well. -- she
:29:32. > :29:36.seems to handle it well. I hope she can relax on Court. When you hear
:29:37. > :29:41.that your daughter is playing Maria Sharapova, when you first hear that
:29:42. > :29:48.it must sound incredible. Yes, but it is a great opportunity. Really
:29:49. > :29:51.excited. How long have you been involved in her career? I suppose
:29:52. > :30:01.you have to do all the running around? Yes, we have transported her
:30:02. > :30:10.two places ever since we -- she was five. And what about you? I have
:30:11. > :30:13.watched her since he was five and transported her, too. We hope she
:30:14. > :30:19.will have a wonderful day. As long as she's happy. I just must point
:30:20. > :30:23.out, Andy Murray, there is an Andy Murray in the ranks, a slightly
:30:24. > :30:29.different Andy Murray to the one we are used to at Wimbledon. You are
:30:30. > :30:34.the uncle. Yes. I'm looking forward to the game. I spoke to my niece in
:30:35. > :30:41.the players' Lounge. She seems. I hope she placed her best and that is
:30:42. > :30:51.all we ask of her. We wish her all the best. I hope your nerves are OK.
:30:52. > :30:58.I bet her uncle Andy Murray gets a table whenever he wants one! Here
:30:59. > :31:06.comes Maria Sharapova and Sam. What a big moment for Sam. On Court
:31:07. > :31:13.against Maria Sharapova. She has won five Grand Slam 's, she is a savvy
:31:14. > :31:19.businesswoman as well. She has been launching a new project, a pop-up
:31:20. > :31:39.shop in Wimbledon Village. We sent our reporter to meet her.
:31:40. > :31:47.It has been ten years since you last won at Wimbledon. Does it feel like
:31:48. > :31:53.that long ago? It does feel like a long time ago. I don't member very
:31:54. > :31:57.often unless someone reminds me. When I look back, it seems so fresh
:31:58. > :32:04.on my mind, the moment of getting on my knees, it was an experience on
:32:05. > :32:11.its own. You do the same celebration now. Is it automatic? I'm not quite
:32:12. > :32:16.sure why I keep doing the same celebration. I just want to get done
:32:17. > :32:22.on my knees, you have played the last point and you won it. I always
:32:23. > :32:28.struggle with that because it is super awkward but I don't win as
:32:29. > :32:32.many matches as you do. Don't say that! It has been two weeks since
:32:33. > :32:40.you won in Paris. Congratulations. Does it feel weird that it is such a
:32:41. > :32:44.quick turnaround? It does, in a way. It describes EU have the two
:32:45. > :32:50.biggest tournaments so close together -- it is crazy that you
:32:51. > :32:57.have. You can take the confidence and hope to bring it to Wimbledon.
:32:58. > :33:01.But you only have a few days to celebrate. The mentality changes
:33:02. > :33:06.when you get to London. I am quite superstitious. I always go in the
:33:07. > :33:18.same shower and locker room. Next time I play you, I will take your
:33:19. > :33:24.shower! I don't mind. I can shower anywhere pretty much. I usually put
:33:25. > :33:30.my left shoe before my right, for some reason. I feel like you have
:33:31. > :33:36.more superstitions when you play. I used to do the hair thing. Only now
:33:37. > :33:49.that keeps thinking that I keep going that. -- only now that
:33:50. > :34:01.Djokovic. It will be our national TV now. OK, Novak, do you hear that?
:34:02. > :34:08.Are member talking to you about the Spice Girls. I have a good memory.
:34:09. > :34:14.-- I remember. Is that the kind of music you listen to before matches?
:34:15. > :34:26.I did when I was younger. What is your favourite song? Spice Up Your
:34:27. > :34:36.Life. I will be working for the BBC over Wimbledon. Are there any tips?
:34:37. > :34:42.Anything I should tell John McEnroe? Tell him everything you think, tell
:34:43. > :34:53.it as it is. Basically, I should abuse him? Please, you have got to
:34:54. > :35:00.do it. If you say so. We will have to put Laura back on court very
:35:01. > :35:05.soon. Lovely interview. Maria Sharapova, so relax, enjoy in the
:35:06. > :35:12.interview. Nice to hear from her. She is going to be looking again...
:35:13. > :35:17.Another player who has not done so well looking to come back. It is
:35:18. > :35:21.nice to see her do an interview when she is not straight off the court.
:35:22. > :35:27.You get a glimpse of her personality. It has been tough the
:35:28. > :35:31.last two years for her at Wimbledon. Another victory at the fringe this
:35:32. > :35:36.year. She said it is very tough for her. I think it is her arm. She has
:35:37. > :35:44.a bad shoulder. The balls are heavier here. It is tough to recover
:35:45. > :35:49.and be 100%. We will see how her campaign goes. The big rivalry with
:35:50. > :35:53.Serena Williams which has blossomed over the past couple of years. A lot
:35:54. > :35:58.of people would think that would be the final. They are the two
:35:59. > :36:04.favourites. They are in the same quarter two Grand Slams in a row.
:36:05. > :36:08.They work going to meet at Paris. Bruce Sharrock either did not play
:36:09. > :36:13.the second half of last year. She will get her ranking up this year --
:36:14. > :36:21.Maria Sharapova did not play the second half. What advice would you
:36:22. > :36:24.give to Sam Murray? You have got to embrace the moment. Sometimes
:36:25. > :36:29.players are completely overwhelmed and forget to play. She has got to
:36:30. > :36:34.keep it simple and remember to breathe. It can be overwhelming, the
:36:35. > :36:41.show courts. We wish Sam well and hope her family enjoyed as well.
:36:42. > :36:45.Thank you for dropping in the studio. We will just pop over to
:36:46. > :36:50.Centre Court because potentially a real shock. Rafael Nadal has dropped
:36:51. > :36:56.the opening set to Martin Klizan of Slovakia. That much is currently
:36:57. > :37:05.over on BBC Two. Rafa Nadal who lost early in the last two years in
:37:06. > :37:09.public in. Here we are on Court One for Maria Sharapova against Sam
:37:10. > :37:20.Murray. Nervous moments for some Murray. The
:37:21. > :37:29.woman who strides back to her seat now has been here many times -- for
:37:30. > :37:35.Sam Murray. A daunting task for Samantha Murray. If possible, a
:37:36. > :37:42.challenge to be enjoyed and savour as well. I think what an opportunity
:37:43. > :37:46.for Sam Murray. She is very hard working. She hits the ball well. She
:37:47. > :37:52.has played at university in the States. She has played a lot of
:37:53. > :37:57.matches there. It is just a matter of her hopefully hitting a couple of
:37:58. > :38:01.good shots early on in the opening games of this match. Otherwise,
:38:02. > :38:14.everything can go terribly wrong. You just need a little bit to give
:38:15. > :38:17.you some confidence. You find out a lot about yourself on days like
:38:18. > :38:23.this, whether you can rise to the occasion, whether you will wither
:38:24. > :38:53.away. Maria Sharapova is going to get us under way.
:38:54. > :39:06.Interesting. Did I hear you mention the server being the one thing we
:39:07. > :39:14.will watch for Maria? Only in tournaments in particular, she can
:39:15. > :39:25.serve a slew of doubles. She knows how to battle through that somehow.
:39:26. > :39:31.If anything were designed to let Sam Murray settle into a match, it was
:39:32. > :39:55.those opening two points. She just missed that but it was not
:39:56. > :39:58.a bad rally to get your strokes going. A big serve and she returned
:39:59. > :40:42.it quite well. We got used to seeing Maria struggle
:40:43. > :40:50.early in her matches at the French and even in Madrid in the final she
:40:51. > :40:52.was a set down before she won that. Three of her matches at the French,
:40:53. > :41:07.she was down a set. In other words, Sharapova tends to
:41:08. > :41:14.make life difficult for herself. You could see the toss was so low. This
:41:15. > :41:24.is her Achilles heel. The double faults she frozen. Strangely enough,
:41:25. > :41:31.it is not normally because her toss is too low. Often her toss is very
:41:32. > :41:41.high. -- the double faults she throws in.
:41:42. > :42:01.An opportunity, not a menacing serve either.
:42:02. > :42:10.Such a deliberate player, Sharapova. Takes all the time in the world and
:42:11. > :42:18.powers of concentration. Gathers herself for a moment before coming
:42:19. > :42:23.back to serve. I am sure she might get a warning at some stage, if not
:42:24. > :42:29.in this match. Sooner rather than later. Taking a bit too much time.
:42:30. > :42:43.They are trying to be somewhat stricter this year.
:42:44. > :42:52.Three double faults in her opening service game. Sets a dangerous tone
:42:53. > :42:58.for Sharapova. She tends to work them out of her system a little bit
:42:59. > :43:02.as the tournament goes on. She certainly goes for her second serve.
:43:03. > :43:11.There are merits to that thought process. But also risks. You don't
:43:12. > :43:16.want to throw in an easy second serve, go for a big one and you risk
:43:17. > :43:20.missing it. You know that against players like Serena Williams, they
:43:21. > :43:34.gobble up the second serve if it is not full tilt.
:43:35. > :43:38.As with so many players, it is the toss that is the problem rather than
:43:39. > :44:00.the racket. Gasped of admiration from the crowd.
:44:01. > :44:05.The power of the return. That is a pleasure to watch. So often when
:44:06. > :44:09.players are hitting with all of their velocity, they are unable to
:44:10. > :44:10.change it and then hit a little delicate shot. Beautiful
:44:11. > :44:29.combination. Might have woken Maria up, the big
:44:30. > :44:43.blasted return on the previous point.
:44:44. > :44:53.She had her chances there Sam Murray. But Sharapova holds
:44:54. > :45:05.eventually. I think we highlighted it beforehand, her serve, Sharapova.
:45:06. > :45:09.Again, you look further down, they were talking beforehand about
:45:10. > :45:14.possible quarterfinal meeting with Serena Williams. Looking a long way
:45:15. > :45:18.ahead. There are certainly elements of her game she would need to
:45:19. > :45:26.tighten up. Certainly the top half of the draw seems to be very much
:45:27. > :45:33.the tougher of the two halves. I regret that as they tweak the men's
:45:34. > :45:38.seeding a bit, they could not tweak the seedings and shift to wrap a
:45:39. > :45:45.bit. If she had done better last year they might have.
:45:46. > :45:49.They are so strict about colour. I am amazed they let her have black
:45:50. > :46:13.ankle supports. They have cracked down on any little
:46:14. > :46:17.flashes of non-white. I suppose ankle supports might come under
:46:18. > :46:37.medical clothing and be exempt. Sam Murray trains at the LTA
:46:38. > :46:48.training centre in Bath. Challenging that, I think, Sam
:46:49. > :47:36.Murray. Just looking. The return comes back so quickly
:47:37. > :47:42.these days. You really have to be on your marks after you have hit your
:47:43. > :48:01.serve. The quality of returning is stupendous everywhere.
:48:02. > :48:11.Every service game for Sam Murray is going to be a battle of survival.
:48:12. > :48:24.Survives very well. Good holes. -- good hold. To hear the noise...
:48:25. > :48:35.APPLAUSE What a lift it gives you. Perhaps
:48:36. > :48:40.she is daunted by it. I would think she would be totally lifted by it.
:48:41. > :49:01.Half of playing well is getting the adrenaline going.
:49:02. > :49:13.That second serve of Maria, she goes pretty full tilt at it, but it has a
:49:14. > :49:18.combination of spin in it. Perhaps for grass shears trying to use a bit
:49:19. > :49:37.more slice bring it into the body -- perhaps for grass she is trying.
:49:38. > :49:47.Good to hear that Sharapova's voice is in fine working order! I would
:49:48. > :50:15.say that as a matter of opinion. Well, not exactly what you would
:50:16. > :50:22.call the traditional sort of approach shot to come in behind.
:50:23. > :50:52.Sharapova really punished for that. Challenge immediately from
:50:53. > :50:54.Sharapova. You doubt if she is going to get any joy, but it was very
:50:55. > :51:03.close. UMPIRE: Sharrock -- Sharapova has
:51:04. > :52:04.two challenges remaining. Taking her half chance. Just a
:52:05. > :52:07.terrific return of serve. She anticipated that, went right after
:52:08. > :52:40.it correctly. Break point. Lovely shot. That is the best shot
:52:41. > :52:47.she has had so far. She appreciated that herself. A little cry of, come
:52:48. > :52:52.on! It was a pretty deep, good return. She had to get it exactly
:52:53. > :52:59.right. Almost throwing her whole body into that shot.
:53:00. > :53:33.In the end, that is probably the serve that Maria will probably
:53:34. > :53:51.utilise more, out wide, keeping it low.
:53:52. > :54:06.It is a hold again for the number five seed. Again, if you were to
:54:07. > :54:12.offer some encouragement to Sam Murray, there have been
:54:13. > :54:18.opportunities. Don't be afraid. They will come again as well. We talked
:54:19. > :54:23.about the time that Sharapova had off towards the end of last year
:54:24. > :54:27.with a shoulder injury and feels she took a long time to come back and
:54:28. > :54:34.build up the strength in her shoulder. It is only now she is
:54:35. > :54:38.getting back to full capacity. In interviews, she has said she had to
:54:39. > :54:42.put up with a lot of poor results in the period she was coming back
:54:43. > :54:47.because she just was not fit. She had trouble still with her shoulder.
:54:48. > :54:57.She said that it was not much fun, having to put up with losing
:54:58. > :55:03.matches. But she stuck it out. There are only two players in my mind to
:55:04. > :55:09.have concentration like Sharapova has. One on the mend's side and her
:55:10. > :55:18.on the women's side. It is now dial Billy Budd -- it is Nadal who
:55:19. > :55:22.concentrates on every single point. She has incredible concentration and
:55:23. > :55:28.determination. People coming back in after taking a break, it is still
:55:29. > :55:33.hot. This will be a full Court One within a few games. Samantha Murray
:55:34. > :55:45.to serve. Highways think the second service
:55:46. > :55:50.game when you are the underdog is the most difficult. You put all of
:55:51. > :55:54.your resources into the first service game and you are so happy to
:55:55. > :56:37.win it and there is a tendency to relax.
:56:38. > :57:24.That was your fault, Andrew! Most things are.
:57:25. > :57:36.downloader for that ball and that probably is the biggest challenge
:57:37. > :57:49.for her. -- to get down lower. She is so tall.
:57:50. > :58:05.She did not get that. Maybe she thinks she did. Let us see if she
:58:06. > :58:18.made a long arm. Maybe she did! Simultaneous racket". Great effort.
:58:19. > :58:31.If Samantha Murray cannot close out this service game, she will regret
:58:32. > :58:33.that volley at the net. It was hard to read that it came back without
:58:34. > :00:24.hitting the ground twice. There it is. Sharapova has the
:00:25. > :00:55.break. could really have been forgiven to
:00:56. > :01:08.thinking that Maria had given that ball up. She has to re-focus now.
:01:09. > :02:40.Sharapova is beginning to time her serve.
:02:41. > :02:41.She knows it's only really been her big, hard shots that have won her
:02:42. > :02:57.points. An ace and Sharapova's serve seems
:02:58. > :03:09.to be working well now. She's a break up. SUE BARKER: SO MARIA
:03:10. > :03:16.SHARAPOVA COMFORTABLY in front in this match. Heather Watson is a set
:03:17. > :03:21.up, and a break up against Tomljanovic. If you want to watch
:03:22. > :03:27.that match, it is live on the red button.
:03:28. > :03:32.On Centre Court, well drama, Rafael Nadal is up against Martin Klizan.
:03:33. > :03:35.He's lost the opening set 6-4. He's lost a break point there. He's
:03:36. > :03:40.trying to fight his way back into this match. The world number one in
:03:41. > :03:43.real trouble on Centre Court. That's live on BBC Two. Here on one, we're
:03:44. > :03:57.heading back to Court No 1. Sharapova collecting herself. It all
:03:58. > :04:04.looks good for the number five seed at the moment. Just that concern for
:04:05. > :04:08.Sam Murray that once Sharapova begins to get going on all
:04:09. > :04:28.cylinders, she'll be hard to live with.
:04:29. > :05:00.More and more spectators are coming into court one.
:05:01. > :05:31.I'd rather that players got rewarded financially by the prize money they
:05:32. > :05:38.get at Wimbledon, even if they lose. Good serve.
:05:39. > :05:43.I'd rather see them get prize money than get given money without playing
:05:44. > :05:53.matches. I'm all in favour of the wild cards.
:05:54. > :06:29.That came through fast! It's hard to stop the panic coming
:06:30. > :06:55.in. The second serve devoured by
:06:56. > :07:00.Sharapova. She has a double break now, romping to this set.
:07:01. > :07:06.This is where it comes into your head, the panic. You don't want to
:07:07. > :07:08.be gobbled up in a match like. This you want to make a good fist of it.
:07:09. > :07:31.You know the goodwill is with you. Two errors like that from Sharapova
:07:32. > :09:18.would encourage her. Sam Murray couldn't be faulted
:09:19. > :09:28.there. Sharapova has some wonderful shots in her lockier.
:09:29. > :09:46.Sharapova is hitting the ball very well and she's moving very well. She
:09:47. > :11:15.looks in great shape. Certainly going for her shots, Sam
:11:16. > :11:21.Murray. I don't think she has any option. If she plays carefully and
:11:22. > :11:34.keeps the ball in, it gets demolished by Maria.
:11:35. > :12:20.Good Once again shot. Saved by Murray.
:12:21. > :12:31.She would love this set not to be 6-1. She would love to add another
:12:32. > :12:46.game to her collection here. A chance to get a break back.
:12:47. > :12:58.It's not to be. Maria Sharapova must have an internal clock as well. 25
:12:59. > :13:08.seconds is the maximum they're allowed and it's always 23, 24.
:13:09. > :13:15.It's funny you say that, because when she's been told that she's
:13:16. > :13:18.taking too long and given a semi-warning, she says, "How many
:13:19. > :13:40.seconds was that? And she has the set now, Maria
:13:41. > :13:46.Sharapova. The number five seed against the British wildcard Sam
:13:47. > :13:50.Murray. Sue Barker: We will be back with this match in a moment. Let's
:13:51. > :13:53.take you around the grounds and on Centre Court, Rafael Nadal is
:13:54. > :13:57.fighting back like the great champion he is. He's finding a way
:13:58. > :14:03.to win, finding his way back into this match against Martin Klizan,
:14:04. > :14:08.who took the first set 6-4. Rava is -- Rafa is up a break. That's live
:14:09. > :14:13.on BBC Two. On court three, heather Watson going
:14:14. > :14:20.well, 6-3, now 5-1, two breaks of serve. Looks like that's 5-2 now.
:14:21. > :14:27.She'll coming out to serve for the match in a moment on court three.
:14:28. > :14:51.Watch that live on the red button. On court two, Raonic is winning
:14:52. > :15:01.against Matthew Ebden Mad son Keyes is through. -- Key ises through. A
:15:02. > :15:06.very talented player. She's through 6-3, 6-3. Back we go to court one.
:15:07. > :15:13.What's to happen here for Virginia to come back, she's probably not
:15:14. > :15:18.going to win the match, but she'd love to compete. What does she have
:15:19. > :15:21.to do better? It's very close indeed. She just has to be able to
:15:22. > :15:50.focus on one point at a time. First serve percentage is a little
:15:51. > :15:56.bit low, just over 50%. She's got a zbre first serve. -- she's got a
:15:57. > :16:10.very good first serve. When you play somebody with
:16:11. > :16:13.concentration as good as Sharapova, you've got to try to match them in
:16:14. > :16:28.that area. She's just rushing it a little bit
:16:29. > :17:35.now. Sharapova looking at the ideal start
:17:36. > :18:04.to this second set. There is the break for Maria
:18:05. > :18:13.Sharapova. She is a set up and a break up. Sharapova is in total
:18:14. > :18:18.control. Sue Barker: We'll be back on court one in a moment. On Court
:18:19. > :18:23.Three, Heather Watson has come out to serve for the match. She's won it
:18:24. > :18:27.in some style. This big serve forcing the error from her opponent.
:18:28. > :18:37.Watson is through to the second round here at Wimbledon. A big smile
:18:38. > :18:41.from Heather, the British number one and a victory for her. Well done,
:18:42. > :18:43.Heather. That's what's been happening out on court three. Let's
:18:44. > :18:50.go back now to Court One. Maria Sharapova is perfectly
:18:51. > :19:20.comfortable in this environment. You could just see the confidence
:19:21. > :19:45.beginning to ebb away from Sam Murray.
:19:46. > :19:50.You certainly don't get any tounts experiment, up know -- opportunities
:19:51. > :19:54.to experiment, maybe I should go for a big return or a bit of a different
:19:55. > :20:09.one. She doesn't give you any breathing space.
:20:10. > :22:14.She hung with Sharapova as long as she could, but vergely the class of
:22:15. > :22:18.Sharapova tells. We were talking that it was a decade ago that she
:22:19. > :22:22.won as a 17-year-old. You never would have thought that she wouldn't
:22:23. > :22:24.win Wimbledon again. It was incredible that match when she
:22:25. > :22:48.played with such confidence on Centre Court in the final.
:22:49. > :23:21.There's only six months difference in age between these two.
:23:22. > :23:27.She steps up the volume and the power. You fear for Samantha Murray
:23:28. > :24:11.now. She got away with a drop shot very
:24:12. > :24:20.early in the match, but that was a little bit a desperation shot.
:24:21. > :24:26.Easily taken by Sharapova. She has the double break in the second set.
:24:27. > :24:54.It was only a matter of time. Scenes from the match and a day that
:24:55. > :24:57.Sam Murray would have dearly loved to have enjoyed. I'm sure she's
:24:58. > :25:00.still enjoying the experience, if that's possible when you're on the
:25:01. > :25:05.end of a sound beating, at the moment. When you see the draw and
:25:06. > :25:11.are not a particularly experienced player, at the top level of the
:25:12. > :25:19.game, you see that have you to play, I would say Sharapova or Serena or
:25:20. > :25:24.Venus, your heart would sink, because those players, including
:25:25. > :25:29.Maria, are the players who can just demolish you. If you see the draw
:25:30. > :25:34.and you have a player who's 20th or 30th in the world, you know you have
:25:35. > :25:39.a whisper of a chance. With the very top players, even in your wildest
:25:40. > :25:44.dreams it's highly unlikely. It's these big hitters as well.
:25:45. > :25:49.Looking at the record of Maria Sharapova, last 41 first-round
:25:50. > :26:18.matches and slams, she's only lost once.
:26:19. > :26:27.I don't think I can fault Sam Murray on her choice of shots. But it's
:26:28. > :26:44.difficult to execute. She wants to play aggressively.
:26:45. > :27:08.If only she could tie a few of those together.
:27:09. > :27:34.I would give the umpire a second look on that serve. It was very
:27:35. > :27:52.close to the line. That's what Sam Murray has to do,
:27:53. > :28:26.take the second-serve chances. She took that one well.
:28:27. > :28:33.Like all the best players, you can see the reaction to this shot that
:28:34. > :28:48.she's not one for easing up in any way.
:28:49. > :28:55.into the open court. That was a lovely Sarah. Maria Sarah -- Maria
:28:56. > :29:09.Sharapova getting a little bit more adventurous with her serve. She is
:29:10. > :29:26.tremendously focused and determined. Samantha Murray is now serving.
:29:27. > :29:36.That was just too bad. I have to say that Samantha Murray seems to have
:29:37. > :29:41.all the ingredients to be ranked a lot higher than the position she is
:29:42. > :29:49.currently in. But that is one of the wings that happens. Unless you get
:29:50. > :30:29.good draws and get a lot of winds, your ranking can slide down.
:30:30. > :30:47.That was good play, forceful play by some anthem array. -- Samantha Power
:30:48. > :31:36.re-. It is a proud day but very hard to
:31:37. > :31:47.watch sometimes. That was so on there. It was such a good service.
:31:48. > :32:02.Maria Sharapova just times at absolutely perfectly. But absolutely
:32:03. > :32:04.brilliant. This is break point. Samantha Murray will be absolutely
:32:05. > :32:11.mortified if she does not get a game in this set. She does not have one
:32:12. > :32:23.yet. Another break for Maria Sharapova. She will serve very
:32:24. > :32:31.shortly for the match. There will be a debate, I am sure, about the
:32:32. > :32:41.wildcards. The LTA said they were not going to go beyond a certain
:32:42. > :32:44.ranking this year. 247th in the world, people will save why are they
:32:45. > :33:00.getting an invitation to the first round of the grand slam tournament?
:33:01. > :33:14.I know. But what can you say? If you think about the draw being 128
:33:15. > :33:27.players... Some joy came up in the arena beakers Heather Watson's wind
:33:28. > :33:30.came up on the screen. -- because. I think 108 players get in and then
:33:31. > :33:38.there is a bunch of wildcards and qualifiers. The ranking is quite low
:33:39. > :33:45.in order to get in. Wildcards in the past have made their mark and scored
:33:46. > :33:48.some famous victories. I do not think it is going to be this way
:33:49. > :34:21.today. Maria Sharapova serving for the match.
:34:22. > :34:37.Well done! Tremendous stuff. She has hit a lot of good shots here to win
:34:38. > :35:04.the point and she hung in so well. A great serve and a lovely follow
:35:05. > :35:08.up. You mentioned before that it is surprising that Maria Sharapova had
:35:09. > :35:15.not won more Grand Slams because she beats virtually everybody. She has a
:35:16. > :35:21.terrible record against Serena Williams. Unfortunately, Serena
:35:22. > :36:05.Williams is in the same quarter as her.
:36:06. > :36:26.things that she will cling to from this match and for encouragement.
:36:27. > :36:38.The crowd are willing Samantha Murray on. But Maria Sharapova is
:36:39. > :36:40.not in the habit of showing mercy. Just moments away from her place in
:36:41. > :36:56.the second round. Closer still. A Swiss player awaits
:36:57. > :37:28.in the next round. And she takes the match with an ace.
:37:29. > :37:34.The number five seed is through. Hopefully it will still be a day for
:37:35. > :37:40.Samantha Murray to remember. Maria Sharapova showed a dominant
:37:41. > :37:50.performance. She starts her bid for a second Wimbledon title. It was a
:37:51. > :37:57.first-class performance. She struggled with her service action a
:37:58. > :38:04.little. Other than that, she was the personification of efficiency. She
:38:05. > :38:12.has practised quite a bit on the grass courts. It looks as if she is
:38:13. > :38:17.in fantastic shape. A word for some anthem Murray. We knew it was going
:38:18. > :38:31.to be tough work for her. -- Samantha Murray. It is very, very
:38:32. > :38:40.hard to play against this woman. Maria Sharapova looks in great
:38:41. > :38:48.shape. She looks very well and full of confidence. Arguably, she is the
:38:49. > :38:51.most famous female athlete in the world and she carries herself very
:38:52. > :38:58.well. She comes up with great performances. She is signing some
:38:59. > :39:06.autographs. She will have some rest tomorrow. She will probably have a
:39:07. > :39:15.fourth-round meeting with Angelique Kerber. It is a tough draw for her.
:39:16. > :39:26.But she is off to a great start. That match was completed in 58
:39:27. > :39:48.minutes. It was very much one-way traffic. The score 6-1, 6-0. SUE
:39:49. > :39:56.BARKER: well done to Maria Sharapova but the score does not reflect the
:39:57. > :40:00.match. Maria Sharapova on her way. She was disappointed with her
:40:01. > :40:04.performance in Wimbledon last year but she is on her way and her
:40:05. > :40:19.campaign has started. The number five seed is safely through. Let's
:40:20. > :40:38.show you some other results today. Richard Gasquet winning his match.
:40:39. > :40:53.in straight sets. He is the eighth seed in these championships.
:40:54. > :41:06.This is the match out on Court number three. A British wildcard.
:41:07. > :41:17.We will keep an eye on that match and that match is on the red button.
:41:18. > :41:29.We are going to join the match on Centre Court. Rafael Nadal is on
:41:30. > :41:36.court. It is the match of the left-handed players. We can join our
:41:37. > :41:51.commentating team of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming.
:41:52. > :41:59.That looked good to me. Rafael Nadal is going to challenge that. It
:42:00. > :42:36.looked as if it was perfectly placed.
:42:37. > :42:42.You would have to say that was not a great game from the two-time
:42:43. > :43:44.Wimbledon champion. Rafael Nadal was way off the court
:43:45. > :45:50.there. It was a very tough shot to execute.
:45:51. > :46:13.We will not write this man off just yet. He has had some great results.
:46:14. > :46:30.He has gone totally to with some excellent players. He is being
:46:31. > :46:42.coached by a great coach and he has a fitness coach as well. He has a
:46:43. > :46:47.very tall frame. He can pack a wonderful punch. He times the ball
:46:48. > :47:00.exceptionally well. This is interesting. If Rafael Nadal wins
:47:01. > :47:07.this match 6-3 or 6-4, it will benefit his opponent. But if he can
:47:08. > :47:12.break back, it would be a huge lift for him. He could steal this and
:47:13. > :47:43.that would be absolutely amazing. People are just filtering back into
:47:44. > :48:09.the arena. It is very hot in here indeed.
:48:10. > :48:23.PETER FLEMING: that was an impressive shot.
:48:24. > :48:47.He was expecting that to come very deep.
:48:48. > :48:54.This match has been going on for two hours now. There was a 45 minute
:48:55. > :49:15.warm up beforehand! John McEnroe making the point about
:49:16. > :49:22.watching Rafael Nadal. I would urge anyone to go and watch these guys
:49:23. > :49:45.crack this. He looks as if he is chopping down trees. UMPIRE: new
:49:46. > :49:50.balls, please. We have never witnessed anyone with
:49:51. > :49:57.the speed on the racket head like this man, Rafael Nadal. The rackets
:49:58. > :50:03.are lighter than perhaps they have ever been. The grip on the racket is
:50:04. > :50:11.smaller. You feel as if you can wrap your hands around it. This is a
:50:12. > :50:13.commentary box full of continental grips! What is this new thing,
:50:14. > :51:42.top-spin? He has got those new tennis balls so
:51:43. > :51:46.he has that extra velocity. It is a great opportunity for him to get
:51:47. > :52:45.that second break he needs to get back in this set.
:52:46. > :52:55.He is keeping a close in the second set. Just one break of serve so far.
:52:56. > :53:01.Let's try and blind you with science. We have been talking about
:53:02. > :53:10.this new top-spin thing and we have some graphics here. This is
:53:11. > :53:31.revolutions per minute. Rafael Nadal on the right-hand side at the top.
:53:32. > :53:48.He hits more top-spin by 30 or 40%. Would you know what the all-time
:53:49. > :53:58.high is? You do the mathematics. Let's not! Mathematics was my best
:53:59. > :54:06.subject! When you watch Rafael Nadal up close. He hits the ball so
:54:07. > :54:09.violently. It is a miracle that he hits so many forehand shots as
:54:10. > :54:33.cleanly as he doors, especially on grass. -- as cleanly as he doors.
:54:34. > :54:38.The grass courts are definitely much slower than they used to be. A much
:54:39. > :55:05.truer bouncers well. That was a bad miss. That was a bad
:55:06. > :55:08.bounce. He did not adapt to that. It is amazing. That is one of the first
:55:09. > :55:30.bad bounces of the match. How grass court tennis has changed.
:55:31. > :55:33.There has only been one serve and volley point in this match. That
:55:34. > :56:28.many? This is a great effort on behalf of
:56:29. > :56:34.the player from Slovakia. He could have let this set goal just as
:56:35. > :56:39.easily. He is quietly trying to find a way back into this match. -- let
:56:40. > :57:17.this set slip. Expect the unexpected. Rafael Nadal
:57:18. > :57:30.could easily have left one of those balls. I thought it was going out.
:57:31. > :57:33.He headed. -- he hit it. Look at what he did with that drop volley.
:57:34. > :58:06.That was a very dubious decision. That was it big point. -- a big
:58:07. > :58:16.point. That is a great way to put it. He looks weary. These Slovakian
:58:17. > :58:22.player is not very well conditioned and it is showing at this point in
:58:23. > :59:41.the match. -- these Slovakian player.
:59:42. > :59:54.On one of -- on one occasion when they played in Paris, it was quite a
:59:55. > :59:57.similar scenario. And that all could win this quite easily. -- Rafael
:59:58. > :00:12.Nadal. John, that's spooky. One break,
:00:13. > :00:48.fourth set, 6-3. I think it's two sets to one. Ball
:00:49. > :00:54.was called out. There is a challenge.
:00:55. > :01:02.Everybody seems to be settling, moving. Everyone's off to get a cup
:01:03. > :01:13.of tea and go to the loo because it is two sets. SUE BARKER two sets to
:01:14. > :01:21.one, Rafa beginning to take control on Centre Court. We're back there in
:01:22. > :01:27.a moment. On Court 3, Dan Smethhurst has had a couple of break points
:01:28. > :01:34.against John Isner in this game. If you want to watch that match, it's
:01:35. > :01:46.on the red button. On court one, Bouchard is live on
:01:47. > :01:52.BBC Two. That's just getting under way.
:01:53. > :01:56.On court 12, Lopez, who's had a wonderful summer on grass, finalist
:01:57. > :02:03.at Queen's, the winner at Eastbourne, he is 2-0 up, and 3-4 in
:02:04. > :02:33.the third set. Follow that match online.
:02:34. > :02:45.Serena loves the big occasions. She loves Centre Court. She may be on
:02:46. > :02:48.quite soon. She's taking on Anna Tatishvili of the United States.
:02:49. > :02:54.That's still to come. Let's rejoin this match at the start of the
:02:55. > :02:58.fourth set. It's definitely not easy, when you
:02:59. > :03:02.have to wait as Serena Williams is at the moment and Anna Tatishvili, a
:03:03. > :03:07.big moment for her. You don't know what's going on. You're following a
:03:08. > :03:11.men's match that could go five sets, may last five hours, it's difficult
:03:12. > :03:23.to prepare. Tennis is one of the only sports like that. JOHN MCENROE:
:03:24. > :03:28.There should be more time on court. That makes it trickier. Roger
:03:29. > :03:31.Federer won in one hour and 31 minutes, somewhere in that
:03:32. > :03:37.neighbourhood. That's as quickly as it can happen. But this easily could
:03:38. > :03:46.go, not easily, but it could potentially go a couple more hours.
:03:47. > :03:53.Imagine, if you followed the John Isner Nicholas N -- Mahut match! I
:03:54. > :04:01.was thinking back to super Saturday in 1984. I was the last match on
:04:02. > :04:09.that evening. I was in the stands! 11. 20 you finished! Final the next
:04:10. > :04:12.day? Yes, thankfully now in the US Open, finally, just a couple years
:04:13. > :04:16.ago, they finally took a day off. It took about 35 years, but they
:04:17. > :04:23.finally get the two players, the finalists, a chance to recuperate. A
:04:24. > :04:28.Monday finish? This year. Next year it's a Sunday finish, but Friday
:04:29. > :04:35.semifinal. Big changes Hallelujah. To the calendar here next year. The
:04:36. > :04:41.French Open winner will have three weeks between instead of the two.
:04:42. > :04:44.Wimbledon is moving back a week. Great news for this guy, who is
:04:45. > :04:49.always winning the French. Give him a chance to celebrate and rest for a
:04:50. > :05:12.week, start off, play an event, a week later, not a couple days later.
:05:13. > :05:20.Hugh do you defend -- how do you defend that shot? That's
:05:21. > :06:29.unbelievable. The only way would be to go for the return.
:06:30. > :06:36.That's just what he wanted there, a quick service game, put the pressure
:06:37. > :06:42.right back on Klizan, who is three in three lifetime, best of five.
:06:43. > :06:49.He's never come back from even a two sets to one deficit in his career.
:06:50. > :06:57.Really? Not even in Davis Cup? He was two sets to one up in all three
:06:58. > :07:05.matches that he won in five. He's going into unknown territory
:07:06. > :07:08.against the greatest, if not the greatest competitor in tennis
:07:09. > :07:09.history, then right up there in sports history.
:07:10. > :08:56.Any sport. first-serve percentage dropping, as
:08:57. > :09:35.this match has gone on, getting desperate.
:09:36. > :09:40.He's winning half the points that they're playing when he misses his
:09:41. > :09:48.first serve. He's trading from the back of the court pretty well.
:09:49. > :10:12.People might win 60% of the points on their first serve against Nadal,
:10:13. > :10:15.when they get their second serve in, he will punish you. On clay, his
:10:16. > :11:04.opponents win 30% or so. APPLAUSE
:11:05. > :11:08.That is a well deserved round of applause for both these guys. That
:11:09. > :11:11.was the sort of point Klizan was playing in the first set. Can he put
:11:12. > :11:36.a few together here? That was close. It looked like it
:11:37. > :11:42.caught It must something. Have hit the service line. That's why he
:11:43. > :12:44.didn't challenge. Also why he didn't make contact.
:12:45. > :12:49.Nadal's confidence is growing as this match has gone on, hard earned,
:12:50. > :13:04.well done. It's a strong hold. If he gets
:13:05. > :13:08.through this match, it will certainly prepare him for the rest
:13:09. > :13:16.of the tournament. This one is a long way from over.
:13:17. > :13:26.SUE BARKER: If he gets through, it will be interesting for us, because
:13:27. > :13:32.he will face Lukas Rosol, who has won in four sets.
:13:33. > :13:39.It could be a repeat of that match two years ago, with Rosol on his
:13:40. > :13:42.Wimbledon debut producing relentless ground strokes, which put Rafael
:13:43. > :13:47.Nadal out of the championships. That will be one to look forward to.
:13:48. > :13:56.Rosol is through. Rafa still with work to do.
:13:57. > :14:04.ANDREW CASTLE: He does have some work to do here, 5pm on a sunny
:14:05. > :14:09.Tuesday. Dimitrov in great form yesterday. Federer today. Djokovic
:14:10. > :14:14.was superb. But there is something to be said, Peter, for having a
:14:15. > :14:18.match and one of the star names to play themselves in, especially Rafa
:14:19. > :14:23.with the French Open and everything else. PETER FLEMING: I would have
:14:24. > :14:27.thought so. Rafa wasn't feeling that great, we heard rumours. He was
:14:28. > :14:32.limping around the other day. He looks pretty good today, moving
:14:33. > :14:36.well. I don't know. I just think because he hasn't won many grass
:14:37. > :14:42.court matches that this is a great bonus for him. To come through a
:14:43. > :14:54.tight one will give him a lot of confidence early on.
:14:55. > :15:02.You assume that he's going to glide through this but Klizan hitting the
:15:03. > :15:24.ball beautifully. UMPIRE: Mr Klizan challenging
:15:25. > :15:50.theical. Right baseline, ball was called in.
:15:51. > :15:55.Shaky looking there and a good look at that backhand, went for the
:15:56. > :16:36.tougher shot up the line. That's the second time he's done
:16:37. > :16:40.that! I'm going to stand up in the commentators' box and applaud that!
:16:41. > :16:46.Oh, my goodness. That is way too good. Look at this:
:16:47. > :16:50.He also does a pirouette to go with it. Doesn't he get dizzy when he
:16:51. > :17:25.does that. Unbelievable. The kick serve really kicks and then
:17:26. > :17:27.the spin on the far end that Klizan had to deal with. A premium on foot
:17:28. > :17:43.work. There's the break. That really could
:17:44. > :18:00.be telling. They're going to have quite a few
:18:01. > :18:04.points where they can choose from for the highlight roll tonight for
:18:05. > :18:15.Rafael Nadal. You talk about finding a way back into a match. This is
:18:16. > :18:19.will and desire at its best. He's just broken Klizan.
:18:20. > :18:43.Mentally. He is going to turn the screw now.
:18:44. > :19:02.He's going to make Klizan suffer. He sees the finish line and he is
:19:03. > :19:03.guns blazing right now. I didn't see Klizan's string break, but he's
:19:04. > :19:17.looking to change something. It's unusual for Rafael Nadal to be
:19:18. > :20:01.held up. Normally it's the other way round.
:20:02. > :20:10.In the old days that would have been a backhand. In the tram lines
:20:11. > :21:07.hitting forehands. Backhand slice. You wonder, is it possible to hit it
:21:08. > :21:08.harder than this? I mean physically. Probably not possible to swing
:21:09. > :21:53.harder. So, of all the numbers and all the
:21:54. > :21:58.stats that get crunched and put on bits of paper and the rest of, it I
:21:59. > :22:03.suppose, the most jaw-dropping statistic on Nadal will always have
:22:04. > :22:07.to be the French Open. To play the French Open, which is on clay, best
:22:08. > :22:12.of five sets, the clay court championship of the world, to win it
:22:13. > :22:17.nine times out of ten that you play it - I mean, six or seven years ago,
:22:18. > :22:24.we were saying he could win ten of these or a dozen. I was fortunate
:22:25. > :22:28.enough to be around in the era of BjornBorg, he played the French Open
:22:29. > :22:34.eight times and won it six. He lost to one guy, who beat his twice. His
:22:35. > :22:39.career record at the French was 48 and two. I thought that was
:22:40. > :22:51.unbelievable, which it is. It is. To think that this guy seven times, 66
:22:52. > :22:54.and one. 66 and one at the French? Bjorn achieved the French-Wimbledon
:22:55. > :23:07.double three times. Nadal has done it twice. He could do it again.
:23:08. > :23:11.He's tied right now with peat -- Pete Is he Sampras. Your favourite
:23:12. > :23:16.this week? I picked Djokovic. But I tell you something, it is truly a
:23:17. > :23:18.pleasure to watch this guy play. I hope they are all in the second
:23:19. > :25:01.week. He sure needed that. John, early on
:25:02. > :25:09.in a major, did you like to play tough matches like this? No. So two,
:25:10. > :25:14.two and two would have been OK? Yeah, OK. The stress level is high
:25:15. > :25:18.as you come out. You want to get your feet, well feet wet is the
:25:19. > :25:25.term. You know you don't actually want to get in too big a. If you
:25:26. > :25:27.come through one it's a major bonus. If you do. If you're not an
:25:28. > :26:16.emotional wreck. That counts me out. week and talking about grand slams,
:26:17. > :26:41.Martin Klizan hasn't gone away entirely yet.
:26:42. > :26:52.Absolutely suffocating when you play him, you have no chance whatsoever
:26:53. > :26:55.to relax. That was a pretty good Did you return. Ever hit with him? Not
:26:56. > :27:08.with Martin no. Oh, Rafa, once. I'm a lefty, it didn't matter to
:27:09. > :28:16.him. That's frustrating for any player,
:28:17. > :28:22.when you have the point one, the guy's guessed wrong and you miss
:28:23. > :28:40.that which was relatively straightforward.
:28:41. > :28:51.Shuch a good shot. -- such a good shot. It's incredible. It is.
:28:52. > :28:53.It's just laser-like into the corner. It's dipping, it's fast.
:28:54. > :29:40.It's difficult to read. firmly played. Considering the lack
:29:41. > :29:58.of success he has had with that lately, that was very nicely done.
:29:59. > :30:11.UMPIRE: time violation, rewarding, Rafael Nadal. -- warning.
:30:12. > :30:22.Perhaps it did affect him. He did not make any eye contact with the
:30:23. > :30:28.umpire. He is an umpire that takes no nonsense. This match has been
:30:29. > :30:49.going for over two hours now. Perhaps that was the straw that
:30:50. > :31:19.broke the camels back. Enough is enough.
:31:20. > :31:36.I wonder if Rafael Nadal will look over at the umpire. After that time
:31:37. > :31:42.violation, he wrapped that all around the frame. If he was angry.
:31:43. > :31:50.--, he did not show it. I totally disagree. It is not the first time
:31:51. > :32:00.that he has gone over 20 seconds. We do not know about. -- we do not know
:32:01. > :32:08.that. It seems to have come out of nowhere. The umpire should say to
:32:09. > :32:20.him that he was getting close and he should have warned him initially. In
:32:21. > :32:38.Grand Slam play, it is 20 seconds. Ivan Dodig was 25? It is 20. I
:32:39. > :32:46.thought. It is important. It is the spirit of the code. I hope it is not
:32:47. > :32:51.the reason why Rafael Nadal lost his serve. But we must give his opponent
:32:52. > :32:58.credit that he is still out there and still working very hard. It
:32:59. > :34:54.looked inevitable. Now there are questions that still remain.
:34:55. > :34:59.actually control the ball better friendly hit it harder. He was able
:35:00. > :35:14.to control that wishes forehand stroke. -- that vicious.
:35:15. > :35:20.That was wonderful, really good. That is why these top layers are so
:35:21. > :36:05.amazing. What a response! How do you play at
:36:06. > :36:19.defensively than that? -- better defensively. Remember the score at
:36:20. > :36:29.the French Open. The identical score. If Rafael Nadal halls here,
:36:30. > :38:10.it will be the same. -- hauls the score here.
:38:11. > :38:57.He played such a strong point. For was the volley? Why did he not
:38:58. > :38:59.close that out? He search -- that certainly was a point that he should
:39:00. > :40:08.not have lost. What a physical specimen he is.
:40:09. > :41:42.After two hours and 52 minutes on Centre Court he has match point.
:41:43. > :42:29.He has defended a match point and here is a break point.
:42:30. > :42:43.UMPIRE: the ball is challenged, or sideline. The ball was called out.
:42:44. > :43:19.Ad vantage, Rafael Nadal. UMPIRE: challenge, the ball was
:43:20. > :43:31.called out. Game, set, match, Rafael Nadal.
:43:32. > :43:40.Who is to say that this Manuel Neuer be here for the full fortnight? --
:43:41. > :43:56.that this man, Rafael Nadal. He looked good. He was challenged. It
:43:57. > :44:05.was a very tough match. The biggest cheer of the day is when he takes
:44:06. > :44:10.his shirt off! Very rurally will you see Rafael Nadal this happy after a
:44:11. > :44:29.first-round match. -- not very often. The female champion of last
:44:30. > :44:35.year looking on. He is going to want to win so badly in the next round.
:44:36. > :44:48.That goes without saying. There is some stress involved in playing a
:44:49. > :44:54.player that you lost to previously. Still the fact that his next
:44:55. > :45:01.opponent has done it on this court, that will make it interesting. The
:45:02. > :45:09.crowd is absolutely loved this effort by both of these players.
:45:10. > :45:20.Definitely one of the better matches in the men's championship so far.
:45:21. > :45:39.John McEnroe got the score line that he predicted almost one and a half
:45:40. > :45:49.hours ago. Here is how he secured his place in the second round. There
:45:50. > :45:56.is not any gap in the draw now. He cannot get enough of winning. That
:45:57. > :46:08.is one thing I can issue you. Any competitor gets tired. You do not
:46:09. > :46:20.get tired of winning. Signing with his right hand. He plays with his
:46:21. > :46:33.natural hand. But what about his uncle Tony? He suggested that he
:46:34. > :46:53.play left-handed. There are still not many left-handed players in the
:46:54. > :47:08.top 100. These Slovakian player did very well here today. -- the player
:47:09. > :47:17.flames -- from Slovakia. This arena has absolutely come alive after this
:47:18. > :47:34.match. Serena Williams well, on Centre Court next. -- will arrive.
:47:35. > :47:42.That is it. Rafael Nadal is safely through the first round. He talks to
:47:43. > :47:50.our commentator now. Very well done. 700 victories at
:47:51. > :48:01.this level. You are the 11th player in history to do that. What do you
:48:02. > :48:05.think? It is absolutely great. I have had a very long and successful
:48:06. > :48:13.career and I am very happy. That is more important to me. But this
:48:14. > :48:19.competition is very dangerous. I am very happy to go through. You have
:48:20. > :48:26.said that all odd, it is the early rounds and they are dangerous. What
:48:27. > :48:30.are the overriding emotions today? I am always happy when I am able to
:48:31. > :48:36.play on Centre Court. It is a very magic place. I have unbelievable
:48:37. > :48:45.memories from this court. I am very happy to be able to play here. What
:48:46. > :48:59.about the way you played here today? You came back from one set down.
:49:00. > :49:05.Have you found your feet on grass? My goal is to try to win, always.
:49:06. > :49:15.The next match will be a tough one, that is for sure. For the last three
:49:16. > :49:21.years, I have not played very much on grass and that affects my
:49:22. > :49:26.confidence. But I must play with the right attitude and think positive
:49:27. > :49:33.thoughts. The next round is important. Your opponent, a player
:49:34. > :49:41.who will -- beaches here a number of years ago? He is very dangerous, he
:49:42. > :49:52.placed many shots from the baseline. I will try. We wish you well.
:49:53. > :49:59.Congratulations. Thank you. SUE BARKER: Rafael Nadal has the
:50:00. > :50:05.toughest draw of the top four players. Some absolutely gorgeous
:50:06. > :50:09.rallies out on Centre Court. A real treat for the fans out there. Serena
:50:10. > :50:21.Williams will arrive on Centre Court shortly. But let's update June with
:50:22. > :50:51.what has happened around S W 19. John Isner out on Court three.
:50:52. > :51:02.I think she is OK. You can follow that match on number one court on
:51:03. > :51:12.BBC Two. Here is what is happening on Court 18.
:51:13. > :51:20.Some results to bring you. Angelique Kerber, seeded nine at these
:51:21. > :51:25.championships, she triumphed in straight sets. Next up, she plays
:51:26. > :51:41.Heather Watson. The Luciano Lopez is through, but he
:51:42. > :51:56.had to do with the hardware. -- the hard way. Some very close sets.
:51:57. > :52:03.That brings you right up to date with what is happening. As you can
:52:04. > :52:07.see, it is still very busy here at Wimbledon. Many people watching on
:52:08. > :52:12.the big screen and enjoying the absolutely or just weather. It is
:52:13. > :52:24.totally glorious. -- absolutely gorgeous. This is how Heather Watson
:52:25. > :52:33.went through to the second round. She did it in straight sets. A lot
:52:34. > :52:46.of British fans all to support her. -- out there. Look at this for a
:52:47. > :52:54.reaction. She reached the third round two years ago. She is doing
:52:55. > :52:59.very well right now. Earlier today, Roger Federer was out on Court
:53:00. > :53:06.Number One. He was out on court for just an hour and 33 minutes. He beat
:53:07. > :53:11.his Italian opponent. The seven times champion is through to the
:53:12. > :53:17.second round. After the match, he spoke to Gary Richardson.
:53:18. > :53:24.Congratulations. An excellent performance and one that will have
:53:25. > :53:33.given you a lot of pleasure? Yes. The grass is very green and
:53:34. > :53:38.slippery. It is nice to get the match won and I thought I played
:53:39. > :53:43.very well. I got a lot of breaks. I thought I served very well. I
:53:44. > :53:51.thought I came to the net very well. A perfect performance for your first
:53:52. > :53:59.match. Yes. I am eager to play, I am motivated and inspired. I want to
:54:00. > :54:02.win the first round and I am not underestimating anybody. I want to
:54:03. > :54:07.win this championship. That is why I am here. Getting the first match out
:54:08. > :54:13.of the way is always a great feeling. You talk about being
:54:14. > :54:16.motivated and inspired. As soon as you walk out here, you have walked
:54:17. > :54:26.out here hundreds of times, it must give you a huge lift. When I walk
:54:27. > :54:32.in, I am very happy and delighted to go on court but when you step out on
:54:33. > :54:37.the grass, it is very different. I know that this is it. You feel some
:54:38. > :54:46.pressure, of course. A thought on your opponent. He lost his last 12
:54:47. > :54:52.matches. Do you feel a tiny bit sorry for him? I know you are the
:54:53. > :54:58.opponent and you want to get through. I did not know about his
:54:59. > :55:02.record, to be honest. I know he can serve and volley some on the grass
:55:03. > :55:09.and that is great to see. I thought he did a good job and forced me, he
:55:10. > :55:22.tried to make me play. He does not serve as big as you have to on the
:55:23. > :55:26.grass. But feeling sorry? I had a lot of that when I played junior
:55:27. > :55:32.tennis. That is all gone. I have put in my fair share of hard work. I
:55:33. > :55:45.feel like I deserve it, always! Thank you. Thank you. SUE BARKER: at
:55:46. > :55:51.the age of 32, he is still in with a chance of winning a Grand Slam.
:55:52. > :56:01.Serena Williams is looking for her 18th Grand Slam title. She means
:56:02. > :56:07.business. A great big round of applause for the world number one
:56:08. > :56:12.seed. This is an American against an American. Her opponent became an
:56:13. > :56:22.American citizen in April of this year. She was born in Georgia. Tracy
:56:23. > :56:27.Austin, this is one of yours! We could use some more. Serena Williams
:56:28. > :56:33.was angry after she lost in the French Open. She said she was going
:56:34. > :56:40.to go home and practice and practice. She means business indeed.
:56:41. > :56:40.In 20 14 she has had some difficulty.
:56:41. > :56:45.practice. She means business indeed. In 20 14 she has had some
:56:46. > :56:52.difficulty. In 2013, she had an amazing year. She was so focused.
:56:53. > :56:56.Think about the pressure that she has in every match that she plays.
:56:57. > :57:00.She is the favourite for every competition that she goes into. If
:57:01. > :57:06.she loses, it is always a huge shock. In the French Open, she was
:57:07. > :57:10.absolutely destroyed. Especially the way that it happened, it was not
:57:11. > :57:15.even close. But that is when she is dangerous. She has won this
:57:16. > :57:24.championship five times and she is very, very hungry. I want to see
:57:25. > :57:33.that hunger returned to her game. -- come back to. Let's find out if she
:57:34. > :57:46.is ready. She has been speaking to Gary Richardson.
:57:47. > :57:52.It is never easy to have a lot of pressure and you are expected to go
:57:53. > :57:59.out and win every time you step on a court. You can look on pressure as a
:58:00. > :58:05.privilege or a burden. Does it feel like 16 years you have in coming
:58:06. > :58:16.here? It does not. I remember every moment. You remember each moment but
:58:17. > :58:25.what is the best moment? Definitely the last one, 2012. The Wimbledon
:58:26. > :58:30.champion. I remember interviewing you in Central London find your book
:58:31. > :58:36.came out. There is information in there about desire and emotion.
:58:37. > :58:50.Where does that come from? You cannot go and diet. I was born with
:58:51. > :58:55.it. -- and buy it. It started as a fire ant -- a flame and grew into a
:58:56. > :59:01.fire. When you are not playing tennis, how do you relax. I love
:59:02. > :59:10.painting. I do a lot of painting and relax. Can I just ask about your
:59:11. > :59:24.French Open defeat? How long did it take you to get over that? Who says
:59:25. > :59:32.I am over it? Are you not over it? Yes, I doubted. Disappointment in
:59:33. > :59:39.Paris. Does that burn inside you that it did not go well for you?
:59:40. > :59:44.Have you come here with more desire? You must come in here with a lot of
:59:45. > :59:55.desire. Hopefully I will be here. I am ready. I am excited. She was in
:59:56. > :00:03.great form. She is the ultimate competitor. Absolutely. She started
:00:04. > :00:07.15 years ago on the tour. Richard, her father, said they had so many
:00:08. > :00:12.interests and that he would be gone from the game very soon. But she is
:00:13. > :00:17.now 32 years old. It is great for supporters. I remember when Venus
:00:18. > :00:23.Williams won her first championship and I interviewed her. She asked me
:00:24. > :00:26.if I could bring in -- if she could bring in her younger sister and she
:00:27. > :00:31.said that she would be great as well. Now they have both won the
:00:32. > :00:38.tournament five times. An incredible story. This is Serena's 56th Grand
:00:39. > :00:44.Slam appearance and she is still a favourite. Absolutely. She has been
:00:45. > :00:53.able to extend her career because she has had some breaks. I think
:00:54. > :00:59.that is really beneficial and has given her a chance to get some
:01:00. > :01:05.perspective. She has been ill. When something is taken away from you, I
:01:06. > :01:09.think you realise that you do not want to go anywhere. She thinks why
:01:10. > :01:16.do I want to go anywhere else? She knows that she does this well. Thank
:01:17. > :01:21.you. Here on BBC Two, in just over ten minutes, we will go over to BBC
:01:22. > :01:35.One. We will follow this much. Now we go to Centre Court.
:01:36. > :01:40.Let's join our commentators. We are waiting for Serena Williams to start
:01:41. > :01:46.her campaign. She has played 79 matches and won 70 of them, five
:01:47. > :01:50.times the champion as Sue Barker was mentioned 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010 and
:01:51. > :02:04.2012. There's mum, who needs a hat in the
:02:05. > :02:12.competitors stand, looking straight into the sun. Tatishvili became an
:02:13. > :02:34.American citizen in April this year. Lindsay, Anna really struggling of
:02:35. > :02:43.late. Her last nine matches at this level have all been lost.
:02:44. > :02:49.If you're Serena and come intoing this tournament, still in shock
:02:50. > :02:52.after this second-round loss at French Open, this is exactly the
:02:53. > :03:20.type of first round that she would want.
:03:21. > :03:24.Serena has 79 wins and Tatishvili with two wins here at Wimbledon.
:03:25. > :03:48.Advantage Serena. Nothing wrong with that forehand,
:03:49. > :03:49.though. That's a great job by Tatishvili to
:03:50. > :04:17.go after the return. Ridge fally called a fault and then
:04:18. > :04:54.corrected. The raise of the eyebrows as if to say, "Oops, sorry."
:04:55. > :05:24.Wow. Great hitting from Tatishvili. So often it starts with just getting
:05:25. > :06:27.a read on the Serena serve. That's Marty Mulligan who was a fine
:06:28. > :06:34.player here. He happens to run a clothing
:06:35. > :06:48.company. Anna Tatishvili is wearing that,
:06:49. > :07:42.hence his interest in the match. That shot is going to be the shot.
:07:43. > :07:45.Tatishvili, it's a very hard, flat and low ball. That's tricky to
:07:46. > :08:32.handle on the grass. That's a couple of times that
:08:33. > :09:25.Tatishvili has had break point with a second serve.
:09:26. > :09:34.Absolute laser for a return there. Serena has to get used to her serve
:09:35. > :09:36.coming back. She's almost been caught flat footed after she's
:09:37. > :10:27.finished her service delivery. Close indeed, four break points
:10:28. > :10:39.Serena Williams has had to save in this game.
:10:40. > :11:07.An opening game that's now lasted eight minutes.
:11:08. > :11:13.She doesn't hold back, does she? She has a game plan to attack all her
:11:14. > :11:44.shots. Credit Tatishvili who has come out
:11:45. > :11:46.here not with a lot of confidence, but she's come out here looking like
:11:47. > :12:07.she believes. SUE BARKER: This first game is
:12:08. > :12:10.proving to be a battle. If you want to continue watching this, can you
:12:11. > :12:16.over on BBC Two. This match on Centre Court moves now over to BBC
:12:17. > :12:20.Two. We talked at the top of the programme about the great four
:12:21. > :12:25.champions on court, well Rafa, Roger and Maria are through, will Serena
:12:26. > :12:31.join them? Find out over on two. For now, though, bye-byement
