:00:18. > :00:27.Shall I compare the two summers day? Thou art lovely and more temperate.

:00:28. > :00:41.Rough winds do shake the Darling buds of May. And some are's group

:00:42. > :00:51.youth has too short a date. Often it is gold complexion gained.

:00:52. > :01:02.By chance, on nature 's changing course. You cannot be serious. That

:01:03. > :01:15.ball was on the line. But by internal summer shall not fade. Nor

:01:16. > :01:21.lose possession of that fair. Thou shall one dressed in his shade when

:01:22. > :01:38.in eternal lines to time. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see. So

:01:39. > :02:16.long lives this and this is life. Welcome to Wimbledon 2016.

:02:17. > :02:22.Those words we just heard from William Shakespeare still resonate

:02:23. > :02:28.400 years after his passing. What a perfect way to welcome the start of

:02:29. > :02:33.the Championships as Wimbledon celebrates its 130th year. It is a

:02:34. > :02:37.tournament is steeped in history and tradition and remains the most

:02:38. > :02:40.prestigious prize in tennis. Two of the great champions who have won

:02:41. > :02:46.here, Boris Becker and Martina Navratilova say that Centre Court to

:02:47. > :02:52.them is like coming home. Good afternoon. I feel very much the same

:02:53. > :02:56.here in this beautiful BBC studio. What an outlook we have over the

:02:57. > :03:00.grounds. Wimbledon is always special. This will be my home for

:03:01. > :03:03.the next two weeks and we look forward to steering you through what

:03:04. > :03:07.will prove to be a magical tournament. The weather has been

:03:08. > :03:10.kind to us on the opening day, bathed in sunshine and play is

:03:11. > :03:17.underway and here are some of the stars you can see this afternoon.

:03:18. > :03:21.Novak Djokovic begins his campaign to win a third straight Wimbledon

:03:22. > :03:24.and a fifth consecutive grand slam. The top seed faces British number

:03:25. > :03:32.five James Ward in the opening match on Centre Court. French Open

:03:33. > :03:38.champion Garbine Muguruza was the runner-up at Wimbledon last year and

:03:39. > :03:41.start title bid here. Seven time champion Roger Federer loves this

:03:42. > :03:48.place but has not won a Grand Slam in four years. Venus Williams is a

:03:49. > :03:52.familiar face at the All-England Club, the five-time champion begins

:03:53. > :03:56.her 19th Wimbledon today. Former British number one Laura Robson beat

:03:57. > :04:01.Angelique Kerber at this stage the five years ago but has since been

:04:02. > :04:05.plagued by injury. Angelique Kerber's star has risen after she

:04:06. > :04:10.won the Australian Open earlier this year. Milos Raonic has a super serve

:04:11. > :04:17.and he is here with his new super coach, John McEnroe will be in the

:04:18. > :04:22.Canadian's corner. And those are some of the key names to look out

:04:23. > :04:26.for. Djokovic against James Ward is on Centre Court. Garbine Muguruza

:04:27. > :04:31.next and Roger Federer completes the line-up on Centre Court today. On

:04:32. > :04:36.Court Number One, Venus Williams taking on the 19-year-old. And then,

:04:37. > :04:40.Sam Groth of Australia takes on the number five seed Kei Nishikori and

:04:41. > :04:43.Laura Robson takes on Angelique Kerber on Court number one third.

:04:44. > :04:49.The other matches we will be looking for, Madison Keys, the ninth seed,

:04:50. > :04:53.having just broken into the top ten for the first time. Milos Raonic,

:04:54. > :04:58.who made the final at Queen's Club will be on later this afternoon.

:04:59. > :05:03.Alex Ward of Great Britain got a wildcard and he takes on the

:05:04. > :05:11.talented David Goffin and Naomi Broady is also in action as she

:05:12. > :05:16.takes on one of the seeds here. Just say throughout the we will have live

:05:17. > :05:22.coverage as always on BBC One, BBC Two and the red button. And up to 15

:05:23. > :05:26.courts are available to watch. And if you can't watch, you can listen

:05:27. > :05:30.to live commentary on radio five live and five live sports extra.

:05:31. > :05:36.Wimbledon on the BBC is covered from every angle. Let us tell you what

:05:37. > :05:39.has been happening so far after play got underway at 11:30am. Sabine

:05:40. > :05:45.Lisicki, a former runner-up is sailed through against Shelby Rogers

:05:46. > :05:49.of the United States. Who had such a good run at the French Open

:05:50. > :05:57.recently, dropping just four games as she reached the second round. She

:05:58. > :06:03.is through to face Sam Stosur, the 14th seed, who came through against

:06:04. > :06:08.her Polish opponent. The former US Open champion winning 7-5, 6-3. Sam

:06:09. > :06:15.Stosur against Sabine Lisicki in round two. And the first seed out of

:06:16. > :06:22.the championship is the 25th seed. The Romanian was defeated by a

:06:23. > :06:30.German opponent 6-1, 6-4. The first seed to go out of this year 's

:06:31. > :06:34.championship. In the men's event, Marin Cilic, the 19th, former US

:06:35. > :06:41.Open champion has gone through in straight sets against Ryan Baker of

:06:42. > :06:46.the United States. Who is 32 years old, plagued by injury. -- Brian

:06:47. > :06:53.Baker. He came up against and inform Marin Cilic. And we have lost one

:06:54. > :06:58.seed in the men's championship as well. Philipp Kohlschreiber of

:06:59. > :07:06.Germany has gone out. Losing to Herbert of France. Herbert is the

:07:07. > :07:14.partner of Nicolas Mas at in the Men's Doubles, they are the top

:07:15. > :07:19.seeds at Wimbledon. And Adrian Mannarino, we were watching this

:07:20. > :07:22.earlier on BBC Two. Playing Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, he was not

:07:23. > :07:31.able to take a set of the Frenchman who went through in straight sets.

:07:32. > :07:34.6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Mannarino France goes through and sadly for Kyle Edmund he

:07:35. > :07:42.is out of the tournament in the first round. So that is what has

:07:43. > :07:46.been happening so far today. I say it has been bathed in sunshine, it

:07:47. > :07:49.was lovely. We had a little bit of rain when I first popped in today

:07:50. > :07:54.but let us find out what the weather holds for the rest of the day with

:07:55. > :08:00.Carol Kirkwood. A fabulous view over Henman Hill, they were being used as

:08:01. > :08:06.parasols rather than shelter from the rain. We are not inspecting rain

:08:07. > :08:09.this afternoon. It should stay dry. The cloud will come over and the

:08:10. > :08:14.temperature is down a touch but the sun comes out and we will get

:08:15. > :08:19.temperatures of up to about 21 or 22 Celsius. This evening we are looking

:08:20. > :08:23.at a fine evening ahead with amounts of cloud but sunny spells but

:08:24. > :08:27.staying bright. Tomorrow is a different story. We are accepting

:08:28. > :08:32.rain. It will probably come around mid-afternoon. It should clear early

:08:33. > :08:37.evening but as we head into Wednesday, more rain on the cards

:08:38. > :08:42.around lunchtime. It will be with us for a few hours when it arrives and

:08:43. > :08:45.as it clears, we are once again looking at showery outbreaks of rain

:08:46. > :08:50.on and off throughout the aiming. The more showers on Thursday but

:08:51. > :08:57.hopefully, this forecast may change, things may move a little bit faster

:08:58. > :09:02.than we think at the moment. Thank you Carol. It is the opening day of

:09:03. > :09:06.the Championships and that means the defending champion opens up play.

:09:07. > :09:08.Here he comes, Novak Djokovic leading out Britain's James Ward in

:09:09. > :09:19.this opening round. A huge cheer for both players

:09:20. > :09:22.because James Ward has certainly played his part in Britain's Davis

:09:23. > :09:27.Cup success with that magnificent victory over John is now but he is

:09:28. > :09:32.up against the man of the moment, Novak Djokovic, undefeated in the

:09:33. > :09:35.major championships for 12 months. Djokovic up against James Ward in

:09:36. > :09:40.the opening match on Centre Court. That match is now over on BBC Two.

:09:41. > :09:47.James Ward has finally got back into this match. He was 6-0, 3-0 down but

:09:48. > :09:53.has now broken Djokovic and has won two games. That game is now over on

:09:54. > :09:57.BBC Two. We are going to be heading over to Court Number One because the

:09:58. > :10:03.five-time champion Venus Williams is the number eight seed up against

:10:04. > :10:07.Donovan Ricketts of rosacea, who promised so much at 16 years of age

:10:08. > :10:13.but has not done that well in the last couple of years. She is toted

:10:14. > :10:18.toe with Venus Williams at the moment, 4-4. Venus serving with an

:10:19. > :10:26.advantage, we will join our commentators Tracy Austin and Kris

:10:27. > :10:31.Bradman. COMMENTATOR: Another challenge, we have had plenty of

:10:32. > :10:37.those in the match. Break point in this game. There have been two

:10:38. > :10:49.breaks of serve in a row. No luck there.

:10:50. > :11:04.The story of the match, the first two games, Williams served first,

:11:05. > :11:07.holding from 15-40. We got to breaks in a row and Venus Williams is

:11:08. > :11:14.really struggling behind her second serve so far. Three from 13.

:11:15. > :11:23.Opponent looked very nervous at the start but she is pushing Venus here.

:11:24. > :11:27.She has only won two main draw matches on the tour this year, not

:11:28. > :11:32.coming in with confidence. Playing on this historic court can add

:11:33. > :11:37.nerves as well. On top of that, playing Venus Williams who has won

:11:38. > :11:41.here five times. But Vekic has looked a bit more comfortable in the

:11:42. > :11:49.last few games. The tickly when she broke Venus in that seventh game.

:11:50. > :11:55.She has made some unusual unforced errors. Venus got broken in that

:11:56. > :12:01.seventh game. Some wild errors missing by seven or eight feet. She

:12:02. > :12:05.has not found her rhythm completely yet either. Just her 20th match of

:12:06. > :12:10.the year. Her first on grass. Has not played since the French. A lot

:12:11. > :12:16.of strapping on her upper left leg. She talked about being able to push

:12:17. > :12:21.off on the serve as we have seen. 36 years young, ten days ago. Donna

:12:22. > :12:29.Vekic only has ten hours left as a teenager. She turns 20 at midnight.

:12:30. > :12:38.Serving to stay in this opening set, Vekic at 4-5.

:12:39. > :12:43.What was interesting is that when Vekic broke, she lost the first

:12:44. > :12:49.point of the next game and got very down on herself quickly and then

:12:50. > :12:51.served a double fault. Two double faults in a row. The nerves showed

:12:52. > :13:14.up when she got up in the match. David Felgate on the right, Stan

:13:15. > :13:17.Wawrinka, Vekic's boyfriend in the crowd as well. On the line, first

:13:18. > :13:29.ace. David Felgate the coach of course,

:13:30. > :13:52.second stint as Vekic's coach. Venus reaching for that ball,

:13:53. > :14:19.expecting it to come to her. Terrific hold. Interesting when she

:14:20. > :14:27.was down, she came out and serve an incredible game. Went after it.

:14:28. > :14:33.Played so passively in the eighth game when she was up eight rate. It

:14:34. > :15:00.is amazing how the mind gets in the way in sports.

:15:01. > :15:23.Tough enough taking on Venus Williams for the first time at

:15:24. > :15:25.Wimbledon on Court Number One, she doesn't want to take on herself as

:15:26. > :16:08.well, Vekic. Not much on that second serve at

:16:09. > :16:09.all. Three from 14. So predictable to a right-hander's forehand as

:16:10. > :16:47.well. Got away with it. A little fist pump

:16:48. > :16:59.from Stan Wawrinka, first time I have seen any reaction from him.

:17:00. > :17:00.Talk us through this folly, Tracy? I thought it was going to be a swing

:17:01. > :17:30.folly. -- volley. Such a great range at the net. Vekic

:17:31. > :17:35.actually hit a great shot, tried to keep it down low and away from

:17:36. > :17:37.Williams. One big stretch to the right, long arm and she has got the

:17:38. > :18:20.point. Vekic looking so much more promising

:18:21. > :18:23.since the beginning of the match when she was awfully timid. Really

:18:24. > :18:45.going after her ground strokes now. One from four on break points so

:18:46. > :19:37.far. Solid play, really took it to Venus

:19:38. > :19:44.there. Really impressive in the last couple of games. Better footwork,

:19:45. > :19:48.looking more alert. Hitting with more authority and conviction on her

:19:49. > :19:54.ground strokes. Altogether looks like she believes she can win this

:19:55. > :20:03.set. She look very nervous when she walked on the court. It is

:20:04. > :20:06.remarkable, she has won two of the last 13 matches, losing first-round

:20:07. > :20:11.everywhere, including the qualifying. She dropped down to the

:20:12. > :20:16.$15,000 event at is born a couple of weeks ago but it has been a very

:20:17. > :20:21.lean time. After all of the hype is a 16-year-old. It was an amazing

:20:22. > :20:30.start for her, runner up in Tashkent in her first main draw event but it

:20:31. > :20:36.has been different since. It is often difficult to deal with those

:20:37. > :20:42.huge expectations. You are not used to losing, your confidence takes a

:20:43. > :20:53.hit. Hammond matches has she watched? Always there and always

:20:54. > :21:03.supporting. She is terrific at supporting opponent's shots as well.

:21:04. > :21:06.Vekic serving for the set. This is the same side Vekic served with when

:21:07. > :21:10.she was up a break in the eighth game. I would say if she plays with

:21:11. > :21:44.a bit more aggression in this game. This is the sort of tennis we saw

:21:45. > :21:51.Vekic produced to get into the top 50. Venus needs to do more on that

:21:52. > :21:52.second serve. Any opportunity with the ball sitting up, she has to take

:21:53. > :22:22.a bigger cut to the corners. Big deep breaths. Third double

:22:23. > :22:50.fault, for the year, she has twice as many double faults as aces.

:22:51. > :23:02.She'd missed it. The youngster has got a lot of support here on Court

:23:03. > :23:42.Number One. Two set points. If you don't take it, Venus will.

:23:43. > :24:30.Vekic had that forehand that she didn't do enough with.

:24:31. > :24:38.To smile is back again. She is almost playing the match with the

:24:39. > :25:24.crowd. The quality of this match has really

:25:25. > :25:32.heightened as we go deeper into the first set. Longer rallies and better

:25:33. > :25:52.hitting by both players. From two set points to break point.

:25:53. > :26:08.That second serve kicked off the line. Williams did not get a good

:26:09. > :26:43.hit at it. One from four on break points,

:26:44. > :27:29.Williams. The margins are so small. I feel

:27:30. > :27:32.like Vekic just act off about 20% when she had those set points. Her

:27:33. > :28:47.court position backed up about three feet. Williams took advantage.

:28:48. > :29:01.That is tough. Venus is getting down so low for these strokes. She is six

:29:02. > :29:23.feet one, 180 ?5. Amazing how quickly things can turn

:29:24. > :29:28.around. When she set up the two set points, the noise from the crowd,

:29:29. > :29:43.she couldn't help but smile. That has long gone. Vekic doesn't have a

:29:44. > :29:45.lot of my twins this year. -- match wins. Whereas Williams has a

:29:46. > :30:33.lifetime experience. It is only the second point Vekic

:30:34. > :30:58.has one in the last 11. Is that Wishaw thinking session Mark

:30:59. > :31:34.she's walking already. -- wishful. It wasn't that far in. Venus getting

:31:35. > :31:56.a much read on the Vekic serves, only 48% in.

:31:57. > :32:06.She has used the wrong foot as well today.

:32:07. > :32:13.Such a good shot on the grass. Turf for your opponent to get the

:32:14. > :34:06.traction to turn. 63 minutes, two set points, serving

:34:07. > :34:12.at 6-5, that will hurt. It well, you have to wonder if it is too much to

:34:13. > :34:19.overcome the 19 old, were so little experience in these situations. Such

:34:20. > :34:28.an interesting change of momentum throughout that set of Vekic looking

:34:29. > :34:34.nervous to start, Venus was playing solid but not overpowering, so it

:34:35. > :34:42.let Vekic hang around in the set. She started to gain some confidence.

:34:43. > :34:49.19% of second serve points 14 Venus. That was problematic. It is unlikely

:34:50. > :34:58.we will see that again in the second shared. -- set. She will feel more

:34:59. > :35:02.comfortable, positive in the scoreline. It was Vekic who blinked

:35:03. > :35:12.when she was up the break, a couple of times in that set. She won the

:35:13. > :35:19.spin of the coin and chose to receive. Gave her time to settle

:35:20. > :35:23.those nerves. They moved it well in the opening service game is. She has

:35:24. > :35:27.got to tell herself she is in this, and before the match, the reason she

:35:28. > :35:31.was nervous because of her form, she didn't anticipate getting as close

:35:32. > :35:41.as she has here. She will take that into the second set. In any shape or

:35:42. > :35:45.form. You try to find a way. There has been a lot of talk about the

:35:46. > :35:47.dress Vekic is wearing, it has had to be altered by the company. It is

:35:48. > :36:16.too flimsy and short. Not a good wrong foot. Vekic missing

:36:17. > :36:20.a lot of the first serves at the net, their head is coming down too

:36:21. > :36:22.quickly. She needs to relax at arm and keep that head up a little bit

:36:23. > :36:35.longer. Venus's returns have found the group

:36:36. > :37:18.now. How important is opening service

:37:19. > :37:25.game for Vekic? More important for Vekic, because you had those two set

:37:26. > :37:37.points, she had her hopes up and they disintegrated at that point.

:37:38. > :37:38.See if she gets broken yet if Williams could run away with the

:37:39. > :38:42.second set. That is nice! Vekic has time to get

:38:43. > :38:48.set and to an load, she has done eight a big job, the forehand -- a

:38:49. > :39:51.great job. Awfully good passing shot. To

:39:52. > :40:02.reflect balance to get that outside leg nice and strong do hit that

:40:03. > :40:09.forehand. Well done, really good from 0-30, gets her nose in front,

:40:10. > :40:12.second set. That was an important game to hold, because of Vekic had

:40:13. > :40:16.her chances, it is missed opportunities by her on Court One.

:40:17. > :40:19.The same applies with James Ward over on Centre Court, he said

:40:20. > :40:26.against the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, who had three break

:40:27. > :40:35.points to go 6-5 up, now serving to say, stay in the second set. It is

:40:36. > :40:45.15-30 on his serve. You can see that on BBC Two. But we are staying on

:40:46. > :40:48.Court One here. A bit of mental baggage for Venus, she would have

:40:49. > :40:50.loved to have got the break on the second. A good message from Vekic

:40:51. > :41:11.that hold. Very difficult shot to hit from

:41:12. > :41:14.Vekic. The ball coming across from the court from her, and redirected

:41:15. > :41:38.up the line, accuracy. Very smart shot, didn't go to the

:41:39. > :42:40.place but just the placement. Seven single Grand Slams Venus has.

:42:41. > :43:26.13 in doubles with Serena, three gold at the Olympics.

:43:27. > :44:30.From 0-30, Venus holding on. Vekic making a macro is irritated by how

:44:31. > :44:36.many times Venus is catching the ball. She has got to keep those

:44:37. > :45:39.instructions out of her head, she has enough on her platter.

:45:40. > :45:49.There was the kind of mistakes Venus has to be frustrated by. That is a

:45:50. > :45:54.return which is very makeable, she should be in the offensive position

:45:55. > :46:05.after that return. First match on grass.

:46:06. > :46:18.It is the winning ball back. Both of the Williams sisters might make a

:46:19. > :46:24.grass tournament to their schedule. This has worked well for them. There

:46:25. > :46:47.are not many who could do that. There has been no sign of any signal

:46:48. > :46:54.on the first match back. She is at home. It is amazing. For both

:46:55. > :47:12.players at well, it seems easy traction. -- as well.

:47:13. > :47:31.Fantastic length. Venus looked comfortable on these ground strokes.

:47:32. > :47:45.Getting into a good rhythm, nice length. The bird flu on the court

:47:46. > :47:56.there -- flew. . That is super. Stays in front,

:47:57. > :48:22.Vekic. It is remarkable, this match is one

:48:23. > :48:30.hour and 17 minutes, the five Wimbledon titles for Venus. This

:48:31. > :48:35.battling, back in the top ten having one last year. That is a phenomenal

:48:36. > :48:45.achievement. It is just the fatigue side, winning matches a day, if she

:48:46. > :48:52.can be a serious contender. It is more important for Venus than other

:48:53. > :48:57.players do have quicker matches and hasn't played doubles for a couple

:48:58. > :49:03.of years, played in France trying to get ready for Rio. Here as well. She

:49:04. > :49:11.didn't want to spend so much time on the court, give herself more of a

:49:12. > :49:15.shot when she is in the singles. And at 36, that's another element

:49:16. > :49:20.because she is really breaking all the rules. We've seen a few players

:49:21. > :49:28.at this level, Chris Evert retired when she was 34. I don't see Venus

:49:29. > :49:39.slowing down as far as motivation. She still enjoys the challenge.

:49:40. > :49:44.Number eight in the world, Venus Williams. Set up, second set,

:49:45. > :50:08.serving with new balls. Does often struggle with the balls,

:50:09. > :50:18.doesn't she? But sickly on first serve -- particularly.

:50:19. > :50:33.Going at it as soon as she can. We mention Vekic, she has played for

:50:34. > :50:35.tournaments. She has played some matches, the problem is she hasn't

:50:36. > :51:07.had many wins on the grass. No prizes for guessing it that was a

:51:08. > :51:19.catch or not. 112 miles an hour with new balls. New balls give it a

:51:20. > :51:32.slight advantage to the server, it moves through the court quicker.

:51:33. > :51:47.She is saying the ball is dead. Can sometimes happen when you hit it, it

:51:48. > :52:51.goes soft. The umpire says no. They are new balls.

:52:52. > :53:04.Keeping her eye on the umpire, she knows she has two speed up between

:53:05. > :53:16.points on serve. 20 seconds between. Big serving from Venus. She is not

:53:17. > :53:27.happy, Vekic, about the time Venus is taking over the serve or ball

:53:28. > :53:28.tosses. But three first serves from Venus, couldn't get her racket to

:53:29. > :54:34.contact in time. So often we talk rugby offensive of

:54:35. > :54:39.Venus, but she is good at defensive as well. -- talk about the

:54:40. > :55:01.offensive. That ball is short in the court,

:55:02. > :55:14.Venus needs a step forward and more top-spin on that.

:55:15. > :55:20.People did not hear the call, so Vekic is challenging that mis-hit.

:55:21. > :55:27.Is it out? Good challenge. They both got to

:55:28. > :57:15.challenge is wrong in the first set. It is a great innovation, Hawk-Eye.

:57:16. > :57:19.Great for the players, it is fair at the end of the day if they use their

:57:20. > :57:25.challenge wisely will stop it build strong for the crowd. -- it builds

:57:26. > :57:56.drama for the crowd. Oh, so solid at the net. She has not

:57:57. > :58:03.missed a volley yet. This is where Venus spends more time than usual on

:58:04. > :58:23.this surface, at the net, when she is successful. It did look a little

:58:24. > :58:26.wide, Venus does not look convinced. It has courted, you are right. It

:58:27. > :59:00.was a quick challenge. It has got a similar feel to the

:59:01. > :59:05.first set, it will be about the bigger point. You were world number

:59:06. > :59:09.one at 16, you won big points. How do you get over that line? It is

:59:10. > :59:15.just about feeling, but interest and believe you'd won so many matters,

:59:16. > :59:19.you have played so many big matches and you stay in the moment. I find a

:59:20. > :59:26.lot of the players start thinking ahead to far, like when Vekic got

:59:27. > :59:30.those two set points, she then backed off from being clear on the

:59:31. > :59:35.strategy and the tactic she needed to employ in the next points,

:59:36. > :59:40.instead of thinking big picture, I can win over Venus Williams. It is

:59:41. > :59:48.about staying calm, keeping your heart rate low and keeping clear. It

:59:49. > :59:55.is easier said than done. That is for sure. It is not a coincidence

:59:56. > :00:01.that top players are all able to do all of the above, over and over

:00:02. > :00:08.again in their career. It is good to see Vekic after that terrible form

:00:09. > :00:15.coming in in terms of results. She is having a chat about the time

:00:16. > :00:26.Venus is taken? She is ranked 112th in the world, it doesn't feel like

:00:27. > :00:34.that at all. Still only 19. Nine hours and a quarter, teenage years

:00:35. > :01:20.behind her. Vekic backing up just a little bit.

:01:21. > :01:22.On grass, you really need to hold your ground use your legs push

:01:23. > :01:39.forward. Too late to challenge now. Not a

:01:40. > :01:44.good time to challenge as well. Unless you are pretty sure at this

:01:45. > :02:05.point, save it for bigger points I think. It was in, Hawk-Eye tells us.

:02:06. > :02:24.To me, this is a good sign, when Venus starts to hit winners on the

:02:25. > :02:31.forehand, she stays down because that is the side that can break down

:02:32. > :02:35.and spray. 15 winners therefore Williams but she is still behind

:02:36. > :03:16.Vekic, who is on 23, overall in the match.

:03:17. > :03:25.On serve in this second set, four breaks in the first set. Twice we

:03:26. > :03:28.had back-to-back breaks. Over an hour and a half now as well, for a

:03:29. > :03:41.set and a half. The backhand down the line has been

:03:42. > :05:17.spot on. Really great also hiking by both

:05:18. > :05:23.players. Having to get the legs way down and get the racket head

:05:24. > :05:39.underneath the ball. A lot of power from both players.

:05:40. > :05:46.Venus just widening the court there are little, getting a sharp ankle.

:05:47. > :06:09.-- angle. Makes me giggle, the come on from

:06:10. > :07:10.the Croatian. We have talked about the lack of

:07:11. > :07:14.form coming in, the lack of wins and her ranking on the slide. But

:07:15. > :07:18.sometimes just one win or a performance can turn everything

:07:19. > :07:22.around? Absolutely. I think even if she doesn't win this match, her

:07:23. > :07:28.confidence has grown. To be able to stay toted toe and have two set

:07:29. > :07:34.points in the first set. Recognise her game is strong enough to compete

:07:35. > :07:38.at this level with a top ten player. David Felgate, her coach will be

:07:39. > :07:44.feeding this as well, saying what she did well. A good form and a good

:07:45. > :07:49.run is just around the corner. Just keep working hard and putting in the

:07:50. > :07:56.hours. That is what you see in press conferences, they go out every day.

:07:57. > :08:02.Just to go out and give 100%. You figure that in the end it will pay

:08:03. > :08:07.off. As you said, it can take one good match to turn things around.

:08:08. > :08:17.She must feel like she is in a slump right now.

:08:18. > :08:33.Stan Wawrinka, and his agent and Donna's there on the right.

:08:34. > :08:55.Fifth ace. No doubt Venus is serving better as the match goes on. Not

:08:56. > :09:35.only the first service assented. Great play. Make it awkward, the

:09:36. > :09:41.smile is back. Terrific pass from Vekic. Every time she gets the vast

:09:42. > :09:52.an Venus's racket, she hits a winner but she gets this one down low.

:09:53. > :10:01.How do you defend that? Venus could tell you she was going to hit that

:10:02. > :10:41.one and would still ace you. Trying for the angle but lost the

:10:42. > :10:44.racket head speed. We have not really yet seen a drop shot or a

:10:45. > :11:09.deliberate short ball to bring someone in.

:11:10. > :11:30.On cue. What telepathy. Took advantage of it well as well. Most

:11:31. > :11:43.players like to come into the net on their own terms.

:11:44. > :11:56.Stunning return. Can really see at times in this match why there were

:11:57. > :12:30.some at excitement about this young woman when she was 16.

:12:31. > :12:39.Now then. One of those big points we talked about. Six break point for

:12:40. > :13:13.Vekic, she has broken twice. Big points, Williams solid as a

:13:14. > :14:53.rock. Absorbing the pace. Terrific end to the game. A mini

:14:54. > :14:57.battle. To Williams. 116 mph. Just one mile per hour shy of her fastest

:14:58. > :15:02.serve today. At a crucial moment and that is the sign of a good server,

:15:03. > :15:38.they can come up big at the crucial moments.

:15:39. > :15:49.She wasn't ready, she was concerned about the serve, the ball sort of

:15:50. > :15:56.crawled over, didn't it? Often times I think Vekic has to be ready

:15:57. > :16:02.quicker for that second shot. That head continues to come down too

:16:03. > :16:23.quickly on the serve. Hence the ball in the net.

:16:24. > :16:31.Just tightening the rains here, Williams. You just don't feel she is

:16:32. > :16:37.going to miss. You feel they has that extra gear to go to in the big

:16:38. > :16:43.moments. Particularly on this surface. At this tournament. You

:16:44. > :16:53.feel that she has 25% more belief when she walks into these grounds.

:16:54. > :17:19.Venus won here for the first time when Donna was three.

:17:20. > :17:35.Brilliant. Punishing ground strokes from Williams.

:17:36. > :17:49.Terrific footwork to get enough room. Two more break points, two

:17:50. > :17:51.from five converted so far. Vekic has got to feel like these are match

:17:52. > :18:53.points. So again, you go back to those

:18:54. > :18:57.chances in the first set for Donna Vekic and same in the second. That

:18:58. > :19:01.break point when she was rallying well and she suddenly went for an

:19:02. > :19:08.ambitious forehand down the line. What happens in that moment, hoping

:19:09. > :19:11.to hit the winner? I think that is a little scar tissue on the year. So

:19:12. > :19:16.many losses under your belt and so few wins that you can pull from. You

:19:17. > :19:20.start to have those doubts that creep into your head just before

:19:21. > :19:27.point of contact rather than playing on instinct and belief behind you.

:19:28. > :19:31.The doubts start to creep in and that is such a difficult time for an

:19:32. > :19:37.athlete to get out of her slump and try to get back to where they are

:19:38. > :19:46.feeling positive on the court. We can see that Vekic can hit the ball

:19:47. > :19:51.beautifully. First serve percentage could be higher, 51%. She clearly

:19:52. > :20:02.needs to be about 65, especially against someone like Williams who

:20:03. > :20:07.returns so well. It has taken an hour and 49 minutes. The five-time

:20:08. > :20:52.former champion will serve for the match. At a set and 5-4.

:20:53. > :23:01.Finishing with a flourish here, Williams. Three match points.

:23:02. > :23:13.A tough opener. First match on the grass this year for Venus Williams

:23:14. > :23:18.ends in success. Terrific effort by Donna Vekic. Just the big points to

:23:19. > :23:21.Williams. So often in her career, she wins them, she did today. She is

:23:22. > :23:40.through to round two. And there are plenty pleased about

:23:41. > :23:48.it as well. 71st Grand Slam main draw. Vekic will turn 20 tomorrow,

:23:49. > :23:53.she will be back for more, hopefully she will find her belief and

:23:54. > :23:57.confidence. They enjoyed her performance, the crowd. They really

:23:58. > :24:04.tried to get behind her as well. She gave Venus Williams a run for her

:24:05. > :24:09.first round money. Amazing record here. Five titles, eight finals,

:24:10. > :24:28.three other quarterfinals. Always dangerous here at Wimbledon.

:24:29. > :24:42.You can just tell at 36 years old she soaks it up and takes it in.

:24:43. > :24:49.First match on this opening day comes to an end, the crowd will be

:24:50. > :24:54.able to get some refreshment before the next match takes to the court.

:24:55. > :24:58.The court played magnificently, as you would expect. A super day that

:24:59. > :25:00.opens the championship this year. Plenty of sunshine and with warmth

:25:01. > :25:19.in the sunshine as well. It was straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

:25:20. > :25:23.Venus Williams talks to us. Some high-quality tennis at the today. A

:25:24. > :25:28.tough introduction back to Wimbledon, how would you assess your

:25:29. > :25:33.performance? The first round is never easy and she played good

:25:34. > :25:38.tennis. She is working hard. I come out and I had the players to feel

:25:39. > :25:43.free and go for it. I felt like I couldn't hit the winner to start

:25:44. > :25:46.with, she ran everything down. You took control back and must be

:25:47. > :25:53.delighted with how you finished off both sets. Won yes, the first set

:25:54. > :25:59.had some hairy moments, bound some set points. That is where experience

:26:00. > :26:05.kicks in. That is where I felt I had the chance to win the most important

:26:06. > :26:10.points. Definitely needed the experience. You are in your 19th

:26:11. > :26:14.Wimbledon and playing against a 19-year-old, experience on your

:26:15. > :26:18.side. People are quick to mention your age and your health, what is

:26:19. > :26:24.the secret to keeping going and playing these matches at a

:26:25. > :26:28.high-level? You have got to enjoy the battle. Every single time you

:26:29. > :26:31.walk on the court it is a battle. You never know how your opponent

:26:32. > :26:36.will play, the wind might blow, you might play badly. You just have to

:26:37. > :26:42.enjoy it and fight every single time. The crowd love seeing you

:26:43. > :26:49.here, how special is it after all these years coming to Wimbledon? You

:26:50. > :26:54.only live once, so you have to enjoy it. You have to do it while you are

:26:55. > :27:00.fairly young. And I guess somehow I am still fairly young. You just have

:27:01. > :27:09.to live in the moment. When it is over, it is over. Certainly not over

:27:10. > :27:16.yet. Congratulations. Thank you. Venus proving what a great champion

:27:17. > :27:21.she is. The five-time champion digging deep at the end of each set,

:27:22. > :27:25.saving set points against a very talented young player. She keeps her

:27:26. > :27:29.dream alive. She calls Wimbledon the love of her life and enjoys being

:27:30. > :27:38.here. The great champion is through to the next round.

:27:39. > :27:49.Venus goes through in straight sets. 7-6, 6-4. Let us remind you and tell

:27:50. > :27:54.you what has been happening elsewhere. We have some match points

:27:55. > :28:04.and a bit of a shock. Ana Ivanovic, the 23rd seed has gone out, 6-2,

:28:05. > :28:09.7-5. This is the young lady who put out Harriet Dart in the qualifying,

:28:10. > :28:14.13-11 in the third set. Britain's Harriet Dart, beaten in the

:28:15. > :28:19.qualifying. What a story that is. Madison Keyes is through. The

:28:20. > :28:24.American number nine seed losing just four games to Laura Sigman and

:28:25. > :28:26.of Germany. She is through to face Kerstin Filkins of Germany in the

:28:27. > :28:40.next round. -- Sigman and. That is what has been happening in

:28:41. > :28:45.the ladies. Ivo Karlovic, six feet ten with a massive serve has put up

:28:46. > :28:48.Borna Coric of Croatia, one of the rising stars. No answer to the big

:28:49. > :29:04.serve of the Croatian. David Ferrer also through, he missed

:29:05. > :29:07.the Championships last year because of an injury but lost just four

:29:08. > :29:15.games on his way through to the second round.

:29:16. > :29:23.Huge cheer the David Ferrer, and a huge cheer the Novak Djokovic, the

:29:24. > :29:29.defending champion, he is put out Britain's James Wharton, he was one

:29:30. > :29:36.setup, but James Ward made it battle that, and Djokovic going through

:29:37. > :29:45.6-0, 7-6, 6-4, James Ward's burst appearance on Centre Court. -- first

:29:46. > :29:51.appearance. Novak Djokovic, he loved his Centre Court last year, winning

:29:52. > :29:55.the final, winning the championship yet once again, he holds all the

:29:56. > :30:00.macro all for grand slam titles and is the one to beat. The man who is

:30:01. > :30:07.trying to be Tim is Andy Murray. He will make his debut at this year's

:30:08. > :30:11.chairmanship tomorrow. We have been seeing Murray with his pre-bummer

:30:12. > :30:15.than photo shoot, and we went to visit him underground. --

:30:16. > :30:26.pre-Wimbledon. You are on top of the world at

:30:27. > :30:32.Canary Wharf last year, you've gone underground. It is the only

:30:33. > :30:39.semi-date we've had. You have come off the back of your fifth Queen's,

:30:40. > :30:43.how much did that title mean to you? I came into Queen's with only a

:30:44. > :30:51.couple of days preparation on the grass, said play some good tennis

:30:52. > :30:57.was nice. Any time you can break a record, do something that's not been

:30:58. > :31:04.done before, it gives you a lift. Queen's, as a tournament, means a

:31:05. > :31:09.lot to me. You have had a great season, you've got to the final of

:31:10. > :31:17.two Grand Slams. Is that enough EU, or do you measure success on winning

:31:18. > :31:24.them? -- is that enough for you. I can't win all of them, I'm putting

:31:25. > :31:31.my self in the positions. My a Chrissy has been go, I've had the

:31:32. > :31:36.best clay-court series. -- my accuracy. Although I didn't get what

:31:37. > :31:41.I wanted, there is still the Olympics to come, two Grand Slams.

:31:42. > :31:47.The season is far from finished yet. In order to beat Novak Djokovic,

:31:48. > :31:52.what do you do? I know when I go on the court, if I want to win, I have

:31:53. > :31:58.to play a great match. You have to be tactical, you have to be fresh,

:31:59. > :32:02.and therefore the better you are. You have to play a greater match. If

:32:03. > :32:07.I do play, it would have to be in the final. I would sign up for that

:32:08. > :32:20.now. Just wait and see. Your grand slam victories, how much was at

:32:21. > :32:26.having your coach back? I've spoken to him, timings didn't work out in

:32:27. > :32:30.the past. To have him back is great. I enjoy working with him in the

:32:31. > :32:35.past, we had a lot of success together. How does the relationship

:32:36. > :32:41.work? Do you start from the beginning or way you left off? We

:32:42. > :32:46.start from where we were. I have a team in place before he came back,

:32:47. > :32:54.and I started working with Jimmy Delgadillo. My results were good.

:32:55. > :33:01.How long does it take his ethos to involve trade into your match and

:33:02. > :33:06.psychology? Was it there in Queen's? That can have an immediate impact.

:33:07. > :33:12.In terms of making changes in your game, that can take a little bit

:33:13. > :33:17.longer, that takes time on the practice court for them to get

:33:18. > :33:25.better. You can't he told Justice serve better having his experience

:33:26. > :33:26.in the team will be a benefit. I am sure he will help me in the next few

:33:27. > :33:44.weeks. Looks a very dramatic photo shoot.

:33:45. > :33:50.It is interesting, Ivan Lendl back, he had so much success. He did have

:33:51. > :33:56.success, and Andy has had a great couple of years coming back from the

:33:57. > :34:00.back injury. I think he is happy to have Ivan Lendl back in his team,

:34:01. > :34:06.just to get that extra bit of experience. He had his best couple

:34:07. > :34:11.of years when he was on his team. Andy Murray place tomorrow. You'd

:34:12. > :34:18.come back from watching Venus Williams. She still plays so well.

:34:19. > :34:22.36 years old, still moves well and has those champion instincts. She

:34:23. > :34:27.does, because she didn't play that well today. She got through that

:34:28. > :34:30.match. It was in the crucial moment where she was able to elevate her

:34:31. > :34:38.game. I think that went been as macro walk through the grounds here,

:34:39. > :34:42.she improves by 25% -- when Venus. Just with the knowledge her game

:34:43. > :34:50.matches up with the service, with the big serve. She plays around the

:34:51. > :34:59.forecourt very well. She gets down so low, most of the points will be

:35:00. > :35:03.long. That bodes for her. You think about the ailments she has had, do

:35:04. > :35:08.you think she has another grand slam in her or is she happy to be just

:35:09. > :35:13.playing and enjoying computing? A bit of both, she think she can be

:35:14. > :35:19.dangerous again. She did well in the grand slam, got to the quarters of

:35:20. > :35:25.the US Open, fourth round here and broken to the top ten again at 35.

:35:26. > :35:29.Nobody really wants to see the name next to Venus at London because she

:35:30. > :35:35.has so much experience and so many wins here. She has won 76 matches,

:35:36. > :35:40.or something like that. And outrageous number of matches. At 36,

:35:41. > :35:45.I think her passion is still just as strong as when she was 17. That says

:35:46. > :35:50.a lot because it was Richard who said at the beginning of their

:35:51. > :35:55.careers, they have so many things they want to move on to. The fact

:35:56. > :35:58.they've gone on and on some other things and being away from tennis

:35:59. > :36:03.for a bit of time has helped them than their careers. It is amazing

:36:04. > :36:09.how tennis has changed since Venus first appeared on the scene. It was

:36:10. > :36:14.Venus and Serena who made a big change. Every ten years there is

:36:15. > :36:17.some change, and the change they brought was they could hit

:36:18. > :36:23.offensively from defensive positions. There was no place to go

:36:24. > :36:27.to, there was power from the serve, from the backhand. When they were

:36:28. > :36:31.eight feet behind, they could still make winners. They made the rest of

:36:32. > :36:40.the tournament stronger, they spent time in the gym. People had to be

:36:41. > :36:44.more physical. Those two, Venus and Serena, really heightened the level

:36:45. > :36:50.where everyone had to be so much physical with their game. Tracy,

:36:51. > :36:57.stayed there, because we will be going to Centre Court soon. We were

:36:58. > :37:01.talking about Venus Williams and the illnesses she has had, but someone

:37:02. > :37:08.who has had a tab time as Law Robson. Wrist surgery and last week

:37:09. > :37:22.she had an injured by a -- injured fire. -- Laura Robson.

:37:23. > :37:30.Laura, what do you make of the draw, the Australian champion? Are you

:37:31. > :37:37.cursing your luck? Definitely not cursing it, they're always tough

:37:38. > :37:46.games here. Going into it, I knew any match would be tough. She is a

:37:47. > :37:58.hard opponent. She has won a slam this year. It is interesting to see

:37:59. > :38:06.how we match up. 24 years Britain has been waiting for a junior

:38:07. > :38:10.champion, they have one now. It is your history here, having been

:38:11. > :38:16.junior champion. Does it count for a lot? Do you feel more confident? It

:38:17. > :38:21.is always a special atmosphere playing here. I live ten minutes

:38:22. > :38:25.away, it is my home tournament. Every match on any court is a

:38:26. > :38:32.special one. I've been very lucky to play on visually every court in this

:38:33. > :38:35.place. I am super excited and thrilled to be a part of the

:38:36. > :38:41.tournament. Hoping to ready play well as well. Generally, over the

:38:42. > :38:47.last few months, would it be fair to say you've been fit in that time?

:38:48. > :38:51.You have been able to play tennis. Finally healthy and fit. This is the

:38:52. > :38:56.longest period of time in a long while. It is nice to play a

:38:57. > :39:02.tournament back-to-back, and I'm not worried about hurting my wrist.

:39:03. > :39:09.Little niggles come up like every other player, but nothing, touch

:39:10. > :39:15.wood, nothing big. You said your brain was switching off at deuce.

:39:16. > :39:19.Have you can't be on switch? I hope so, we will find out. It is

:39:20. > :39:24.something that comes with confidence and having that inner belief you

:39:25. > :39:33.will make the Romeu on the big points. That is a work in progress

:39:34. > :39:37.-- make the ball. Russell Fuller was asking the questions there. Great to

:39:38. > :39:45.say she is healthy, and she is going on Court One. Back in 2008, everyone

:39:46. > :39:49.expecting so much, she loved the big occasions, but these injuries, and

:39:50. > :39:59.when he has surgery, it is so hard. Especially from a rest. Laura was a

:40:00. > :40:04.highly touted junior, and she beat Angelique Kerber in 2011, but that

:40:05. > :40:09.was before she was part of the elite, and Laura was on the rise.

:40:10. > :40:14.She has nothing to lose, the crowd will be in her favour. Hopefully she

:40:15. > :40:19.can use that to feed off their energy and Kerber, it has been an

:40:20. > :40:23.interesting year, starting after with a win at the Australian Open

:40:24. > :40:30.and then struggling to put match wins on the board, because of the

:40:31. > :40:36.expectations. Remember, she lost in the first round of the French Open.

:40:37. > :40:47.Laura Robson, go out and use your skill on the grass. Does it work

:40:48. > :40:54.well Angelique Kerber doesn't play much left hand shops. Any match in a

:40:55. > :41:02.grand slam, first round, you have nerves, but she feels more confident

:41:03. > :41:07.at Wimbledon. Kerber won't like playing Robson, who can hurt. She

:41:08. > :41:14.feels so comfortable her. Angelique Kerber has played well on grass, she

:41:15. > :41:17.won last year. It has been so topsy-turvy this year, it has been

:41:18. > :41:22.Serena Williams and then everyone fighting to win to become number two

:41:23. > :41:31.in the world. Nobody has sustained it. Whether it is Kerber or

:41:32. > :41:36.Muguruza. It has been up and down. It gives people who are ranked 70

:41:37. > :41:40.and 80, it gives players that are ranked lower that feeling, why not

:41:41. > :41:50.me? I've seen someone else ranked at my level upset a normal player. You

:41:51. > :41:59.mentioned Catrina Muguruza -- Garbine Muguruza. You can see that

:42:00. > :42:04.the monkey is off her back. She won't be asked, when will you win

:42:05. > :42:11.your first grand slam title? There are more expectations of... People

:42:12. > :42:15.were saying last year, that big game, she moves well, she seems to

:42:16. > :42:20.handle her emotions on court. She is regal the way she walks out there.

:42:21. > :42:28.They were in 19 hurt the next number one when Serena Williams retires. I

:42:29. > :42:34.think we were. We have seen so many players who have gotten to number

:42:35. > :42:43.one and in the last five years, that trend has changed. They have

:42:44. > :42:47.struggled. Garbine Muguruza, the star attraction on the ladies tour.

:42:48. > :42:57.After that French Open win. There she is on your left, facing Camila

:42:58. > :43:07.Giorgi. Let out on to Centre Court at the Djokovic's first game.

:43:08. > :43:12.Garbine Muguruza stepping out onto court, she wowed the crowds last

:43:13. > :43:16.year. What can she do this year? She is one of the players who have

:43:17. > :43:35.embraced social media, as you will see here.

:43:36. > :43:42.This is my first tournament, and I won my first tournament in

:43:43. > :43:55.Venezuela. This was last year when I reached

:43:56. > :44:08.the final, I lost to Serena. I was so disappointed, as you can

:44:09. > :44:24.see. A very expressive face. This one is from Beijing when I won

:44:25. > :45:00.the trophy. This one is when I realised I won

:45:01. > :45:10.the Grand Slam and they fell down and hurt my knee. It is bleeding

:45:11. > :45:12.here. This was a day in between Paris where I finally got to see the

:45:13. > :45:26.sun, and I wanted to take a self be. What a talent she is, moonwalk in,

:45:27. > :45:33.got all the moves. She can probably cook as well. She is not too shy.

:45:34. > :45:38.Star attraction for the women's game. She can make a fortune but you

:45:39. > :45:44.can go right to the top of the rankings. Beautiful smile, well

:45:45. > :45:51.spoken, takes the media well. Just so much power. Big serve, to hit to

:45:52. > :45:56.all the locations. She hits the ball early and on the rise, not a typical

:45:57. > :46:02.Spanish player for they have so much access of top-spin. She goes after

:46:03. > :46:05.their shots, flat to the corners. We expected so much from her, but she

:46:06. > :46:12.had a bit of a foot injury and struggles for the first few months,

:46:13. > :46:16.but in Miami came around, played better in Rome, got to the

:46:17. > :46:20.semifinals and in the French Open, need we say more? Took the title

:46:21. > :46:27.from Serena Williams, which is a big ask. She has been onto the phone to

:46:28. > :46:33.Rafael Nadal, asking how you change on the grass, moving from one to

:46:34. > :46:39.another. He has helped. We are all ready for this. Last year's finalist

:46:40. > :46:46.against a tricky Italian, Camila Giorgi.

:46:47. > :46:56.COMMENTATOR: This is big for Garbine Muguruza. What she did last year,

:46:57. > :47:16.suddenly she is a star. Played just one match since she won

:47:17. > :47:58.in Paris, lost in Majorca. We have seen it straightaway, no

:47:59. > :48:07.surprise us, they both go after the ball. Both will be camped on their

:48:08. > :48:09.baseline, but agreed to your geek, he will be on the baseline. Her job

:48:10. > :48:41.is to push Muguruza back -- Giorgi. Terratec started. Neither of these

:48:42. > :49:22.players come to ball being dictated to. -- of comfortable.

:49:23. > :49:30.You can probably hear the Italian contingent, the battle between Spain

:49:31. > :49:35.and Italy, and Spain and Italy in your 2016 starting at five o'clock.

:49:36. > :50:05.There is dad in the middle. He is a character.

:50:06. > :50:25.Huge trading from the ground, and even mega power from behind the

:50:26. > :50:25.baseline, got the racket through, so confident is Muguruza after that

:50:26. > :50:51.Paris when. A great play from the Italian. It is

:50:52. > :50:55.interesting with ten two, she is unusual. She has a male idol. -- it

:50:56. > :51:22.is interesting with Giorgi. It is not just power, real talent in

:51:23. > :51:36.the hands as well. We thought it might be an attractive

:51:37. > :52:44.match, and the early signs are good. Again, as soon as she sees the

:52:45. > :52:47.opportunity, she is in quick as a flash. Very precise with her setup,

:52:48. > :53:28.like her idol, Serena Williams. Some wonderful shot from Muguruza.

:53:29. > :53:37.You'll be will be feeling hard done by, didn't do very much wrong in

:53:38. > :53:44.that service game. Super returning from Muguruza. Looks for every

:53:45. > :53:49.opportunity. Released at up to Serena in that Paris final, meant

:53:50. > :53:55.and also with her game, it was like Serena was being beaten by a younger

:53:56. > :54:02.version of herself. Keep an eye on where Muguruza comes from, she

:54:03. > :54:38.stands on the baseline, that is impressive. Like her idol.

:54:39. > :54:46.She was standing about one metre inside the baseline to take that.

:54:47. > :54:53.However much she misses, Angie has been missing a lot this year, she

:54:54. > :55:06.has not changed her stance one iota -- and she has been.

:55:07. > :55:17.Thrilling. Smiles all around. She has such an explosive game, it is

:55:18. > :55:23.all or nothing with Giorgi, she has a Mac live timing and has the body

:55:24. > :55:24.of a gymnast. She used to be a gymnast before she was a tennis

:55:25. > :56:00.player, she is some athlete. Both trained to within an inch of

:56:01. > :56:04.their lives. Muguruza is six foot, Giorgi is five foot six. Doesn't

:56:05. > :56:31.look as tall as that, but that is the reality.

:56:32. > :56:42.A feisty riposte, there is Muguruza's coach. This could be

:56:43. > :57:26.another world number one. Yes, she's not sure but she is not

:57:27. > :57:35.going to challenge. So, two breaks to start this match.

:57:36. > :57:42.With Giorgi, it is all about consistency. We've seen the attitude

:57:43. > :57:44.and stroke making, can she keep it going? She is still 2020 and test

:57:45. > :58:07.side. Hardly had time there, but she found

:58:08. > :58:53.some, she found the space, too. Results over the last few mums have

:58:54. > :58:58.not been too good for Giorgi, she's been struggling with a back injury,

:58:59. > :59:01.and anyone who has had a bad back knows it affects everything you do,

:59:02. > :59:14.training, anything you want to do. It is a struggle.

:59:15. > :59:21.Consequently, results have been tough to take. Seven times she has

:59:22. > :59:26.been a first-round loser. She was seeded last year coming into

:59:27. > :59:27.Wimbledon. Seeded 31 and now she picks up Muguruza in the first

:59:28. > :00:07.round. Do either of these players know the

:00:08. > :00:13.word defence? They don't know the word compromise. It was not in the

:00:14. > :00:15.Spanish coaching manual or the Italian one, it is like someone has

:00:16. > :00:40.ripped it out. These, you have to watch from

:00:41. > :00:45.Georgie. She was unfortunate in the juniors, her serve was absolutely

:00:46. > :00:52.terrible. It is miraculously good compared to how it used to be. But

:00:53. > :01:11.this is a major weakness and why she is down in the rankings.

:01:12. > :01:23.Last year she served more double faults than any other player on the

:01:24. > :01:28.tour, 458. It tells you how good the rest of her game is though that she

:01:29. > :01:58.gets the wooden spoon the last few seasons for the double faults.

:01:59. > :02:09.It was Giorgi who made the play and made the angle. Getting very

:02:10. > :02:44.animated. Not going to have too many long

:02:45. > :02:53.rallies. First strike absolutely vital here.

:02:54. > :03:06.Conchita Martinez, a former champion here of course.

:03:07. > :04:11.Excellent work from Giorgi, staying with Muguruza. Very hard for Garbine

:04:12. > :04:16.and her camp to prepare for this kind of match. You can only really

:04:17. > :04:21.prep for the speed and the type of ball coming at you. Giorgi is so

:04:22. > :04:27.instinctive and makes a lot of late decisions. It is not a comfortable

:04:28. > :04:58.opening match on the grass that is still quite soft at the moment.

:04:59. > :05:06.Another outstanding point from the Spaniard. Be picked up on the

:05:07. > :05:11.half-volley helped. Have a look at this, how precise the footwork is

:05:12. > :05:16.and how early the setup is as well. A lovely replay. The body weight

:05:17. > :05:41.going into the shot, great transfer and a clean strike.

:05:42. > :05:46.Still no backward move from Giorgi. She is doing OK in this rally. Toted

:05:47. > :07:04.toe. Look where she was as she hit that

:07:05. > :07:08.forehand. Not such a stable side of her two ground strokes. A very big

:07:09. > :07:14.Western grip, sort of like a frying pan grip. Sometimes she doesn't use

:07:15. > :07:15.the wrist and get the racket head through the ball and doesn't like

:07:16. > :08:12.being jammed back there. Giorgi working so hard but the

:08:13. > :08:31.natural power does seem to be greater in the Spaniard.

:08:32. > :08:38.Too many misses, critically on that forehand. Doesn't quite have as much

:08:39. > :08:43.cover on the ball and put as much spin on it as someone like Serena

:08:44. > :08:47.Williams. It can balloon if you go hard and fast into it. That is the

:08:48. > :09:15.tactic that Giorgi has brought out here today.

:09:16. > :09:19.One of the longest games of the tournament so far, it has lasted ten

:09:20. > :09:44.minutes up to now. It may turn out to be a very

:09:45. > :09:55.significant game. Five break points saved.

:09:56. > :10:04.Born in Caracas, spent her childhood in Venezuela before moving to

:10:05. > :10:08.Barcelona to train. When she plays, she plays very much for Venezuela as

:10:09. > :10:14.much as Spain although she plays under the flag of Spain. Yes,

:10:15. > :10:18.Conchita Martinez spent many years courtside persuading her that Spain

:10:19. > :10:23.would be a good idea. I think she was always going to represent Spain

:10:24. > :10:28.in the Fed cup. But there is a strong pull towards Venezuela where

:10:29. > :10:37.she likes to spend her holidays. Her mother from Venezuela, her dad, from

:10:38. > :10:40.Spain. As you can imagine, it was huge in both countries. Piller where

:10:41. > :10:46.what is handy about being Spanish is that she was in Majorca for coming

:10:47. > :10:49.out it to the new grass court tournament. She was not ready for

:10:50. > :10:53.that after Paris but she felt she had to go. The upside of losing

:10:54. > :10:58.early is that she spent a lot of time with a Rafael Nadal and his

:10:59. > :11:03.coach. They talked a lot about winning a slam and resetting your

:11:04. > :11:08.goals and not forgetting it but putting it away and starting from

:11:09. > :11:14.zero. How to keep building on the success. I think that was a useful

:11:15. > :11:23.few days she spent out there. She probably would not have got that if

:11:24. > :11:29.she was Venezuela in. A lot of movement in the crowd. Coming in

:11:30. > :11:45.after the Djokovic and James Ward match. You can hear the buzz.

:11:46. > :12:08.Neither of them have served badly but have not held serviette.

:12:09. > :12:16.It is bizarre because both players were on the move and accepting that

:12:17. > :12:40.that ball was in. Giorgi as well as Muguruza, and it was.

:12:41. > :12:49.As we saw, a tracker over the tournament. If she does have another

:12:50. > :13:02.good run here, most of her aces will be collected around the tea in both

:13:03. > :13:17.boxes. At last a whole and a comfortable one as well. -- hold.

:13:18. > :13:22.Fifth Wimbledon for her. Before last year she had done virtually nothing

:13:23. > :13:53.here. Her best was second round a couple of times.

:13:54. > :14:03.Oh. I was going to say well watched. It was brave to take that on the

:14:04. > :14:08.drive volley but the last shot was not pretty. Typical of the younger

:14:09. > :14:11.generation, not so comfortable with the conventional volley, just

:14:12. > :15:06.gripping the racket too tight. Yes. Didn't she do well? You can see

:15:07. > :15:12.Muguruza being pushed off her baseline. Taking the ball so early

:15:13. > :15:32.and hitting it so very hard. Really punches above her weight.

:15:33. > :16:04.And crucially, does not allow her opponents any rhythm.

:16:05. > :16:56.A bit of a boost for Camilla Giorgi but it is Muguruza who leads 3-2.

:16:57. > :16:59.STUDIO: We will be back with this match in the moment but we will show

:17:00. > :17:03.you what is happening elsewhere on the opening day of the

:17:04. > :17:07.Championships. This match is on BBC Two. Milos Raonic of Canada. He was

:17:08. > :17:19.in the final of Queen's two weeks ago. He leads Carreno Busta of

:17:20. > :17:23.Spain. On Court Number One, Kei Nishikori, the fifth seed. They

:17:24. > :17:28.break of serve up against the big serving Australian Sam Groth. He

:17:29. > :17:33.leads 5-3, that is currently available on the red button. And out

:17:34. > :17:40.on court five, what a match this is. Going just over three hours, Lukas

:17:41. > :17:44.Rosol is serving at deuce. He was the player who put out Rafael Nadal

:17:45. > :17:50.in 2012. Up against Sam Querrey, who has come back from two sets down to

:17:51. > :17:55.level it and it is 7-7 in the fifth and final set. That is also

:17:56. > :18:00.available online by connected TV, the BBC sport website or the BBC

:18:01. > :18:04.sport app. Drama out there on Court number five. To quickly tell you

:18:05. > :18:09.that Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, semifinalist back in 2014 is

:18:10. > :18:14.through. He was out on Court 16. His ranking has dropped out of the top

:18:15. > :18:20.ten down to 37 in the world. Good form from him, through in straight

:18:21. > :18:28.sets. Grigor Dimitrov through to the second round at Wimbledon. That is

:18:29. > :18:30.what is happening elsewhere. COMMENTATOR: Muguruza, 3-2 with a

:18:31. > :19:02.break. It seemed like a might as well

:19:03. > :19:12.challenge. The far side from us, a far better view. She decided that on

:19:13. > :19:55.her own accord. I don't think anyone gave her advice.

:19:56. > :20:05.Muguruza doing the right things. If you keep your focus against Giorgi,

:20:06. > :20:06.eventually she will blow out. The ranking, 30 or 67, tells its own

:20:07. > :20:19.story. When you see a highlight reel of her

:20:20. > :20:23.matches, you wouldn't believe she is ranked 67 in the world. But the

:20:24. > :21:07.results speak for themselves as you say. Her shotmaking is an real.

:21:08. > :21:27.Giorgi moving even further up to take this second serve. And there is

:21:28. > :21:33.the result. Stand and deliver. And it was not a bad second serve.

:21:34. > :21:39.Within a foot of the service line. Didn't have a lot of work on it or

:21:40. > :21:42.spin to kick off the court. When the courts are soft, first day at

:21:43. > :21:56.Wimbledon, just wait until they harden up.

:21:57. > :22:46.You will notice that the second serve can sometimes fly over faster

:22:47. > :22:50.than the first served. There is not a lot of control when the ball and

:22:51. > :23:25.the arm gets above shoulder height. It is difficult to imagine the team

:23:26. > :23:30.talk she and her dad go through match by match. I am sure most of it

:23:31. > :23:35.is go for it and trust your shotmaking ability which is

:23:36. > :23:40.prodigious. With Muguruza, it is go for the forehand a little bit more.

:23:41. > :23:51.But I wouldn't think it is too complicated. She is a rather subdued

:23:52. > :23:53.character of court. That is well balanced by her dad, Sergio, who is

:23:54. > :24:06.very exuberant. Yes. Stayed true to herself. Got a

:24:07. > :24:58.lot of the whip on this shot. Not quite. Didn't come back.

:24:59. > :25:43.Muguruza with a chance to break for the third time.

:25:44. > :25:59.It is 5-2. And it is very much as we thought it might be. Giorgi

:26:00. > :26:00.occasionally standing toe to toe and winning a fair amount of points but

:26:01. > :26:22.not enough. Just can't stay with her long

:26:23. > :26:26.enough. I think it is impressive, a nice article in yesterday's Sunday

:26:27. > :26:32.Times. Muguruza was very honest about when she came on to court last

:26:33. > :26:40.year in the final against Serena Williams, she rather underestimated

:26:41. > :26:44.the aura of Serena and the prestige of the occasion. She didn't really

:26:45. > :26:50.understand how much pressure was involved until she walked on court.

:26:51. > :26:55.And it rather through her. At 12 months on a winning in Paris, she

:26:56. > :27:02.felt so calm walking out on the main court at Roland Garros and she looks

:27:03. > :27:08.very calm out here. She looks like Serena as if she owns this court.

:27:09. > :27:17.And just has such presence on the big stage. I don't think it is

:27:18. > :27:19.phasing her at all. After 38 minutes, Muguruza serves for the

:27:20. > :28:05.first set with new balls. Three aces now. If you have done

:28:06. > :28:17.your homework on Muguruza, you would shift a little over to that

:28:18. > :28:20.centreline. She loves that serve. Two aces in the game and another one

:28:21. > :29:32.down the tea. Three set points. Muguruza with plenty of margin for

:29:33. > :29:46.error. Much more constant, she takes the first set 6-2.

:29:47. > :29:55.I think the crowd are very happy with what we have seen. 6-2 set was

:29:56. > :30:01.pretty rough on Giorgi. She played at such a high level. Notice the

:30:02. > :30:07.three double faults, in five service games she hit one in her last three

:30:08. > :30:10.service games. You cannot play one of the best players in the world

:30:11. > :30:15.from a point down when you're on your server. It is difficult to

:30:16. > :30:21.hold. You are putting yourself on such a bad spot. Great win to error

:30:22. > :30:28.ratio for Muguruza. She hits a lot of winners, but she doesn't make too

:30:29. > :30:41.many mistakes. That will do very nicely for the first set.

:30:42. > :30:51.Total commitment, awesome power, and two very different bodies, but the

:30:52. > :31:51.same intent. No challenge. It is asking a lot of

:31:52. > :31:57.any player to play the kind of tennis that she does. But I can't

:31:58. > :32:02.see her changing. Don't hold your breath for the B game. It is not

:32:03. > :32:37.happening. A little pause now, I think. He's

:32:38. > :32:51.not a good tennis watcher, is he, Dad? No.

:32:52. > :32:59.For Giorgi, the problem is that the way her game style fits nicely into

:33:00. > :33:05.Muguruza, rigorous allows pace. She doesn't like changes of spin and

:33:06. > :33:16.flight and being pulled up the court and back, but that is not Giorgi 's

:33:17. > :33:26.game. She has got to cut out errors like that. A couple of doubles. A

:33:27. > :33:43.gross mistake there, and here are two break points for Muguruza.

:33:44. > :33:51.We should mention, to be fair, he has had an operation on his nose a

:33:52. > :33:52.couple of months ago, and he is still recovering. He hasn't gone

:33:53. > :34:26.overboard with the suncream! Not by much. She looks up to her

:34:27. > :34:30.box, they don't give her any signal. She still looking. She is now going

:34:31. > :34:33.to challenge. She took an awful long time to do it. Somebody finally

:34:34. > :34:49.signal from her box. If you are in the player box, you

:34:50. > :35:37.want to keep your head down on those ones, don't you?

:35:38. > :35:56.APPLAUSE Game for the Italian. It is still a

:35:57. > :36:00.mountain to climb. Muguruza proved in Paris that she is the real deal.

:36:01. > :36:07.Possibly the next number one in the world? It is highly likely, isn't

:36:08. > :36:09.it? She is a player who is not only capable but there's lots of room for

:36:10. > :36:17.manoeuvre in terms of drawing her game. She is uncomfortable with the

:36:18. > :36:21.low balls and the second serve as a work in progress, but she embraces

:36:22. > :36:27.it. She loves people. She wants to be number one. Which went to the

:36:28. > :36:30.Paris final she said, no one with members the runner up. She wants it.

:36:31. > :36:47.And that is half the battle. She is not afraid of being number one.

:36:48. > :36:58.She stayed in the same hotel and the morning after, everyone was coming

:36:59. > :37:01.up to her and saying well done, and she was teeming at everyone and had

:37:02. > :37:45.time for everyone. -- beaming at. I didn't see the kitchen sink being

:37:46. > :37:56.thrown across there, but it might have been. It might have been the

:37:57. > :37:59.freezer! Nothing is held back. The only uplift where she can improve it

:38:00. > :38:36.is to up her intensity. APPLAUSE

:38:37. > :38:44.Smartly done. Just watch her finish this point. Early preparation really

:38:45. > :40:27.precise. Remind you of anyone? We're having to leave this match on

:40:28. > :40:31.BBC One. We are coming to the end of our transmission. If you want to

:40:32. > :40:36.continue watching, it is on the Red Button. Coverage continues on the

:40:37. > :40:40.Red Button as Muguruza holds serve at 1-1 in the second set. The tennis

:40:41. > :40:44.continues on BBC Two and at the moment watching Milos Raonic, who

:40:45. > :40:51.has taken the first set from Pablo Carreno Busta. Doing very well out

:40:52. > :40:54.on number to court. Just before we go, rounding up some of the key

:40:55. > :40:58.results from the opening day of the Championships. The defending

:40:59. > :41:01.champion was back on Centre Court, back on form with a straight sets

:41:02. > :41:10.victory over Britain 's James Ward. He romped through the first set and

:41:11. > :41:14.was a battle, 7-6, 6-4, but Novak Djokovic extends is winning streak

:41:15. > :41:21.in Grand Slam is the 29th. He is the man to beat right now. David Ferrer

:41:22. > :41:32.didn't take long. The only lost four games against Dudi Sela of Israel.

:41:33. > :41:39.And this appointment for Alex Ward who had a wildcard into the boot

:41:40. > :41:46.draw. He met the number 11 seed, David Gotham. He went out in

:41:47. > :41:51.straight sets. And this is a real battle that has been taking place on

:41:52. > :41:56.Court number five, three others at 22 minutes. That was his 33rd ace of

:41:57. > :42:06.the match, Sam Querrey going through against Lukas Rosol. Venus Williams

:42:07. > :42:14.is thrown straight sets over Donna Vekic operation, 7-6, 6-4. She had

:42:15. > :42:20.to dig deep towards the end of those sets, but Venus Williams is through

:42:21. > :42:24.to the second round. So, it is time for us to say goodbye on BBC One,

:42:25. > :42:28.but we have 20 of tennis to come on day one of the Championships. Roger

:42:29. > :42:34.Federer will be on Centre Court later. Britain 's Laura Robson will

:42:35. > :42:40.take on Angelique Kerber on Court Number One. Lots to look forward to

:42:41. > :42:44.in the sunshine. Join us for more tennis over on BBC Two. Goodbye.
