:00:39. > :00:46.Hello and welcome back to Wimbledon were, I am pleased to say, the rain
:00:47. > :00:52.had moved away, that covers are off and players are on the outside
:00:53. > :00:56.courts. That is the good news for all of the patient spectators who
:00:57. > :01:00.have waited most of the day. We only had about 20 minutes play early in
:01:01. > :01:06.the afternoon, so everyone has been watching the Centre Court on the big
:01:07. > :01:11.screen and we will be heading off to Court Number One in just a moment to
:01:12. > :01:16.see Johanna Konta. At the moment on Centre Court is the man of the
:01:17. > :01:22.moment, Marcus Willis, with a fairy tale story. He is playing Roger
:01:23. > :01:27.Federer. He had his serve broken in the opening set, that he had a break
:01:28. > :01:33.point against Federer's serve. If you want to see that match, it is on
:01:34. > :01:37.BBC One. But Marcus Willis has been smiling all the way through and
:01:38. > :01:42.enjoying the moment. It is a carnival atmosphere on Centre Court
:01:43. > :01:48.right now. Let's show you what is happening out on court well where
:01:49. > :01:53.Heather Watson is 31 up with a break of serve and it means we have
:01:54. > :01:58.another break point. They are close in the rankings, said this is a
:01:59. > :02:04.tough match for header. If you want to watch that, it is on the red
:02:05. > :02:10.button. It is on Court number 12. We are heading to Court Number One
:02:11. > :02:16.Britain's number one, Johanna Konta, up against this young lady, Monica
:02:17. > :02:25.Puig. Monica Puig has come back and broken her serve and it is 3-2 to
:02:26. > :02:26.hire in the second set. Sam Smith is alongside Simon Read, our
:02:27. > :02:39.commentators. Yes, it is old change. Johanna Konta
:02:40. > :02:44.had a break point in her last game, but Monica Puig is going to show a
:02:45. > :02:54.very different side to us than she showed yesterday. Broken for the
:02:55. > :03:00.first time. I am sure it is a terrible American expression, but
:03:01. > :03:05.I'm sure it does the job. We would all like a do over sometime and that
:03:06. > :03:16.is what Monica Puig has the chance of doing here. A third base.
:03:17. > :03:20.Yesterday I thought she was struggling with the dimensions of
:03:21. > :03:22.the court and the depth perception. She did not find her timing or her
:03:23. > :03:53.rhythm. Just a flick of the top of the net
:03:54. > :03:57.did not help Johanna Konta. It is difficult for her, she had the match
:03:58. > :04:02.completely under control yesterday and now it is tantalisingly away
:04:03. > :04:07.from her. There were a couple of signs at the start of the second set
:04:08. > :04:09.when Monica Puig was feeling more comfortable and then off they came
:04:10. > :04:58.because of the rain. Monica Puig made her debut three
:04:59. > :05:03.years ago and got to the third round. In the last few weeks she has
:05:04. > :06:12.really come to the fore. Her coach is Juan Todero.
:06:13. > :06:20.Yes, the margins are just working against Konta. I feel like this
:06:21. > :06:24.match is flipped on its head because in those baseline rallies yesterday
:06:25. > :06:26.it was Konta who was winning nine times out of ten and she would come
:06:27. > :06:49.out on top of those points. They are right up against the cold
:06:50. > :06:54.and believe me it is cold here. It is cold and windy today. Yesterday
:06:55. > :06:58.it was warm and they were very pleasant conditions in which to play
:06:59. > :07:15.tennis and to watch. But not today, it is a bit of a fight.
:07:16. > :07:24.Good second serve. Her serve has been a big weapon for her, but it
:07:25. > :07:28.let her down in her last service game when she served her first
:07:29. > :07:32.double to concede the break. She does not miss many of those. Per
:07:33. > :07:44.second service is one of the best in the tour.
:07:45. > :07:53.Just a little slow to react to that. It is a shot we have seen more and
:07:54. > :07:57.more in women's tennis. Venus and Serena brought it in and now it is
:07:58. > :08:01.something you would go away and practice. It is very tough to get
:08:02. > :08:09.the first ball after your serve from right under your feet.
:08:10. > :08:27.It has been well documented what a sea change been in the last 12
:08:28. > :08:33.months, mainly thanks to the Australian Open. Last year she was
:08:34. > :08:39.ranked 126. This year she is seeded for the first time. And she looked
:08:40. > :08:50.great in Eastbourne. She beat Petra Kvitova on the way. In the end she
:08:51. > :08:57.lost to Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal. But she is looking so
:08:58. > :09:03.confident. But difficult moments in the first 20 minutes that we have
:09:04. > :09:09.had this afternoon. She knew this would be tough and now Puig is
:09:10. > :09:19.showing us that she really can do something special here. One title to
:09:20. > :09:25.her credit in Strasbourg in 2014. She is the first Puerto Rican to
:09:26. > :09:30.ever win a WTA title. Not too many grass course around, as we were
:09:31. > :09:33.saying yesterday. Or as you were saying, none. It is not holding her
:09:34. > :10:00.back, though, is it? No. Is it my imagination or is Puig a
:10:01. > :10:01.fraction slow today. To me her timing does not look quite right on
:10:02. > :10:37.her forehand. She got really down to that one.
:10:38. > :10:40.With all the rain we have leading up to the Championships in the first
:10:41. > :10:47.few days the courts are still really soft. It is not hardening up and the
:10:48. > :10:48.ball is not bouncing up and these are not playing as the courts would
:10:49. > :11:15.do 20 years ago. She was in pole position, that was
:11:16. > :11:22.for sure. Maybe there was doubt in her head as to whether it was going
:11:23. > :11:45.out. It needs an mother do over. -- another.
:11:46. > :11:54.A really good serve. For a woman of five foot seven she does have a
:11:55. > :12:29.penetrating serve. There was bought at baseline just
:12:30. > :12:32.before that looked like it could have been proud, but she went with
:12:33. > :12:42.it and won the point impressively. Again, the served doing the trick
:12:43. > :15:21.for Monica. Thought about a challenge, but not
:15:22. > :15:27.getting involved. Sometimes what's very handy for opponents of Puig is
:15:28. > :15:32.that you get the same ball coming straight back at you. It's flat,
:15:33. > :15:50.hard and heavy. But once you can get your hand around it straightaway.
:15:51. > :16:02.A bit of work to do on that second serve as well. He wants to be back
:16:03. > :16:12.in Miami, doesn't he? Not his natural habitat. Not Miami weather.
:16:13. > :16:37.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Exhalation from Konta, but to be
:16:38. > :16:41.honest she was gifted that game. The ball is picking up a lot more
:16:42. > :17:38.moisture, and she just has a lot more compromising her game.
:17:39. > :17:53.It is just out. It was Puig changing things up, getting the angles. Super
:17:54. > :18:00.point from her. Konta did well to stay in it as long as she did.
:18:01. > :18:23.Come on! APPLAUSE
:18:24. > :18:57.The wind at the moment is stronger than ever.
:18:58. > :19:05.When it switched to the Konta forehand, didn't look quite so
:19:06. > :19:11.secure. The Konta forehand has improved a lot. She seems as if
:19:12. > :19:15.she's fighting it a little and Puig would be well advised to go hard and
:19:16. > :19:23.fast and early into it as fast as possible.
:19:24. > :19:59.APPLAUSE Outstanding serving from Jo Konta.
:20:00. > :20:12.UMPIRE: New balls please. Miss Gunter leads by five games to four.
:20:13. > :20:16.Amazingly, Jo Konta hasn't won a match at Wimbledon. First round
:20:17. > :20:25.defeat in 2012 to Christina McHale and the following year Jelena
:20:26. > :20:29.Jankovic. Sharapova as well. She hasn't exactly picked her opponents
:20:30. > :20:34.very well! You said there were boxes to be ticked and this will be
:20:35. > :20:42.another. Yes, this will be a huge weight off her shoulders. It will be
:20:43. > :20:46.fascinating if Jo Konta puts in a really solid career. Who knows
:20:47. > :20:52.what's around the corner for her? I don't think we will be talking about
:20:53. > :20:56.the first few years of her career any more. Talking about the
:20:57. > :21:00.transformation in the last 12 months, it has been extraordinary.
:21:01. > :21:07.Even if you knew her really well and rated her very highly, you couldn't
:21:08. > :21:12.have imagined she would be playing this well if you had watched her
:21:13. > :21:20.last year. Fine rain is coming down. We may not have a lot of time left
:21:21. > :21:28.in this match, in this particular chapter of it. But we are going to
:21:29. > :21:46.continue and Puig is serving to stay in the match.
:21:47. > :21:57.APPLAUSE It's hard for the players to be able
:21:58. > :22:03.to concentrate. Still fine rain. But they've obviously decided they are
:22:04. > :22:26.going to continue this. It really is a vital stage of the match.
:22:27. > :22:35.Miss Konta is challenging the call. The ball was called out.
:22:36. > :24:04.That would be brilliant in any conditions, that return. But she's a
:24:05. > :24:06.very resilient character, Monica Puig. Going to need all of that,
:24:07. > :24:36.here. How about that? It wasn't a brisk
:24:37. > :25:05.return but she sprung a real surprise with that shot.
:25:06. > :25:33.So, Konta has got to work hard to get this done in the second set.
:25:34. > :25:55.Fourth ace. What I like from Konta is that in the last five or ten
:25:56. > :26:03.minutes it has been spitting with rain, but no sense of her upping the
:26:04. > :26:10.tempo all rushing out here, that's always the temptation. Still margin
:26:11. > :26:15.for error. She has much more compromise in her game than Puig,
:26:16. > :26:20.but she's not trying to whiz through the points, getting ahead of
:26:21. > :26:21.herself. It's as if the conditions are perfect and she's just plugging
:26:22. > :26:40.away one point at a time. As if to prove us wrong... Puig has
:26:41. > :26:51.been returning yorkers, hasn't she? Very tough to pick those off Jo
:26:52. > :27:00.Konta's toes. Another cracking serve.
:27:01. > :27:06.Apart from that game where she was broken, she served consistently well
:27:07. > :27:18.both yesterday and today. Obviously difficult to read.
:27:19. > :28:10.Favouring it going to her backhand. Puig couldn't get to the drop shot.
:28:11. > :28:17.In the past, Jo Konta will have lost matches which have gone close like
:28:18. > :28:21.this, but her coach introduced her to a psychologist and she doesn't
:28:22. > :28:28.lose close matches now. Certainly not too many of them. He's a very
:28:29. > :28:32.measured guy as well, there is her boyfriend there, and get he gets on
:28:33. > :28:39.well with dad, I think that's always important! Good science! They have
:28:40. > :28:44.got a good relationship it because Esteban coached a very good Spanish
:28:45. > :28:50.player called Roberto Bautista Agut to the top 20 in the world and he
:28:51. > :28:55.has a young family with him and he wasn't that keen on travelling, but
:28:56. > :29:00.Jo knew him from when she worked out in Texas. I think Jo Konta practised
:29:01. > :29:04.that every tennis Academy in the world! Had she worked with Esteban
:29:05. > :29:09.there and she knew exactly what she wanted and she was good enough to
:29:10. > :29:17.say OK, let's give it a go. Jo Konta's mother not here for a good
:29:18. > :29:19.reason. Too nervous, I understand. Serving to stay in the match for a
:29:20. > :29:43.second time. She has such a good temperament. And
:29:44. > :29:45.very good technique. It's a simple game, efficient league produced.
:29:46. > :29:51.That is a good package. Two protracted backhands from each
:29:52. > :30:15.player. Clear thinking. Not too accustomed
:30:16. > :30:56.to net play. That is super defence from Jo Konta.
:30:57. > :31:25.The loudest noise we've had so far. Konta on the brink of her first ever
:31:26. > :31:59.win at Wimbledon. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:32:00. > :32:06.Did she finish with a flourish! Is a magnificent final game from the
:32:07. > :32:15.British number one. Torturous conditions. Cold, wet, windy. But
:32:16. > :32:22.she found enough to beat Monica Puig, who is playing much better
:32:23. > :32:27.today than she was yesterday. A different opponent, a lot of hanging
:32:28. > :32:32.around. My question yesterday was, how would Jo Konta handle being the
:32:33. > :32:44.favourite, and I think the verdict is, no problem at all. Monica Puig
:32:45. > :32:49.obviously very disappointed. Because she was a break up in this second
:32:50. > :32:56.set, it looked very threatening. But Konta rallied well. As we said
:32:57. > :33:01.before, the process she goes through, she describes her career as
:33:02. > :33:05.a process, but the process she went through allowed her not to get too
:33:06. > :33:16.down on herself, break back and then she was wonderful at the end. She's
:33:17. > :33:21.got such a solid game and that is emotional underbelly as well. She
:33:22. > :33:27.needed it today, that was a banana skin, that match. Handle everything.
:33:28. > :33:35.It's been tough. To come on 24-hour 's later in the middle of a match,
:33:36. > :33:38.not easy at all. Good signs for Jo can adjust stable. That's what you
:33:39. > :33:47.want on these kind of days and she delivered. She will play the winner
:33:48. > :33:51.of Eugenie Bouchard and Elena Rybarikova, likely to be Eugenie
:33:52. > :33:59.Bouchard. That would be another huge match. Let's not carried away, but
:34:00. > :34:07.the the side of the draw she is in, it is loaded. Very tough. An hour
:34:08. > :34:12.and 15 minutes, it took. She is courtside now with Lee McKenzie.
:34:13. > :34:18.Well, British summer Time might have gone but you are still here, your
:34:19. > :34:22.first win at Wimbledon, congratulations double yellow thank
:34:23. > :34:30.you so much! What pleased you most about your performance? It was
:34:31. > :34:34.definitely a tricky first round and she is playing very well so I knew I
:34:35. > :34:40.had to be there every single point. The conditions didn't make it easy
:34:41. > :34:47.for both of us. Also in the middle, I think it was 5-4, it even started
:34:48. > :34:51.drizzling a bit. There were a lot of obstacles. I was happy I was able to
:34:52. > :34:57.stay focused as I did and really just panicked and not rush and keep
:34:58. > :35:01.playing. I imagine the predators are temptation is, when you start to
:35:02. > :35:08.feel that precipitation in the air, you just want it done. -- the
:35:09. > :35:12.temptation is. Yes but I managed to keep myself present and not rush
:35:13. > :35:17.anywhere and enjoy being out there and almost wish to stay out here as
:35:18. > :35:22.long as possible. The things that please you most about your game or
:35:23. > :35:26.things to work on before your next opponent? Very happy with how I've
:35:27. > :35:30.been able to serve and also return. It's important to get the first
:35:31. > :35:34.strike in on this surface. The person who gets the upper hand
:35:35. > :35:39.earlier in the point tends to come through. It's about staying
:35:40. > :35:45.offensive and really looking to dictate out there. Congratulations,
:35:46. > :35:51.enjoyed it. Thank you. She really should enjoy it. She had to dig deep
:35:52. > :36:00.because Puig came out firing in that second set. She managed to break
:36:01. > :36:07.Konta and Konta really had to play hard to stay in the match. Well
:36:08. > :36:12.done, Jo Konta. The British number one is through, winning her first
:36:13. > :36:18.ever match here at Wimbledon. She's got a big future, hasn't she? Inside
:36:19. > :36:25.the world plus top 20 right now. We move from Court number one to Centre
:36:26. > :36:31.court right now, where he man of the moment, Marcus Willis, is playing
:36:32. > :36:36.his compatriot, -- is playing his hero, Roger Federer. A wonderful
:36:37. > :36:43.atmosphere. We will bring this to you on BBC Two in about ten minutes,
:36:44. > :36:47.we will be moving to centre court. Marcus is on Centre Court and his
:36:48. > :36:52.good friend Dan Evans is on Court two, playing Alexandr Dolgopolov.
:36:53. > :36:57.This is a tough one. Dolgopolov so entertaining to match. Daniel
:36:58. > :37:06.staying with him at the moment. -- to watch. A couple of results to
:37:07. > :37:11.bring you and Bernard Tomic, this match started yesterday afternoon,
:37:12. > :37:19.it stopped at two sets all and then it was restarted and comic had to
:37:20. > :37:23.just hold one service game to take it and he did. Through to the next
:37:24. > :37:29.round here at Wimbledon. And we're going to hear a lot more about
:37:30. > :37:36.Alexander Zverev of Germany, seeded 24. He's only a teenager but beat
:37:37. > :37:47.Roger Federer in the semifinals at Halle. He beat a tough opponent in
:37:48. > :37:54.Paul-Henri Mathieu, who certainly knows his way around a grass court.
:37:55. > :37:58.Remember the name, Alexander Zverev. We will show you Heather Watson, who
:37:59. > :38:04.took the first set 6-3 against Annika Beck but is now two breaks of
:38:05. > :38:11.serve down in the second at 3-0. Let's join Jo Durie and John
:38:12. > :38:16.Inverdale. COMMENTATOR: If you joined us at the
:38:17. > :38:18.end of the first sector meet you would have thought everything was
:38:19. > :38:22.going swimmingly for Heather Watson. But she's gone off the boil a bit
:38:23. > :38:27.and now things are going more difficultly.
:38:28. > :38:38.She is not missing as much now, Annika Beck. Consistently hitting
:38:39. > :38:42.the ball to the corners. When this match began we talked about this
:38:43. > :38:47.match being one of those matches you really wouldn't have a bet on
:38:48. > :38:51.because they are both around 40 in the world rankings and they passed
:38:52. > :38:55.each other either way alternate weeks. A very hard game to call in
:38:56. > :38:59.advance and even now a hard game to call because the emissions are still
:39:00. > :39:03.having a major impact here. We are right out on the far extremities of
:39:04. > :39:11.the court circuit and the wind is substantial out here.
:39:12. > :39:19.Yes, well, there you go. Annika Beck has been doing that regularly in
:39:20. > :39:24.this set. I think she's also come to terms with the wind a bit better.
:39:25. > :39:25.She's moving her feet around the ball now, which Watson has been
:39:26. > :39:38.doing for the first set. Our unofficial Beaufort scale for
:39:39. > :39:40.the wind speed is those three young Silver Birch is at the back of the
:39:41. > :39:55.court there! Which have been blowing all over the
:39:56. > :39:57.place. When we played the first three games this morning, they were
:39:58. > :41:31.almost 90 degrees. well, that is the rate of. As
:41:32. > :41:39.promised, we're in is in boxes in Britain is, in and of the moment, on
:41:40. > :41:44.centre court against Roger Federer. He has got 40-0 to the first game on
:41:45. > :41:46.the third. Wonderful atlas here on centre court. We will join that now
:41:47. > :41:51.with John McEnroe and Andrew Castle. COMMENTATOR: If you are just joining
:41:52. > :41:53.us, this is Marcus Willis is that he's the man who has been dominating
:41:54. > :42:03.the headlines at Wimbledon. The 25-year-old.
:42:04. > :42:08.APPLAUSE Has certainly use that shot
:42:09. > :42:14.extensively in this match, at least 15 signs, not won a lot of voice.
:42:15. > :42:21.Federer is onto it. -- a lot of voice. There are very few players
:42:22. > :42:40.ever who have had a better touch and feel than Federer. Oh!
:42:41. > :42:48.Anything over the net was good, after this. Just flicks it up. A
:42:49. > :42:55.little too much pace for with outgoings a get a lot easier to win
:42:56. > :43:08.the game at the net than that, that if the shore.
:43:09. > :43:23.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Toying with the great man!
:43:24. > :43:47.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE UMPIRE: Game, Willis. New balls,
:43:48. > :43:54.please. He is ahead of Roger Federer in this set! I reckon his girlfriend
:43:55. > :43:59.should take a little shop of the scoreboard there. Leave the first
:44:00. > :44:07.two sets out on the left. In fact, just do the games! Sharing a court,
:44:08. > :44:13.sharing a scoreboard with Roger Federer. An experience he is clearly
:44:14. > :44:14.enjoyed. The first set was over in half an hour. The second set was
:44:15. > :44:26.better. He is playing better and in the
:44:27. > :44:43.match now. He has always been an evening sort of guy!
:44:44. > :44:55.Are you saying he enjoyed the night like a little too much? Great
:44:56. > :44:56.company, great fun. 25 years of age the light goes on. You have got to
:44:57. > :45:36.sleep. To Marcus Willis's credit, he has
:45:37. > :45:37.lost four stone in weight. He has got three coaches. I will tell you
:45:38. > :45:51.about them in a second. He made pledges to his coaches when
:45:52. > :45:57.they started working together to always compete and think, to turn on
:45:58. > :46:05.your heart light is what they call that. You have got to respect that.
:46:06. > :46:18.How could we afford a coach if he made 300 bucks this year?
:46:19. > :46:28.He has been playing in French and German league matches and he coaches
:46:29. > :46:40.himself. I guess. His dad is an accountant as well. For the first
:46:41. > :46:43.time he has got something to look at with this prize money in the second
:46:44. > :47:18.round. I have watched Federer over the
:47:19. > :47:44.years and I am surprised that he has let him pull him out like that.
:47:45. > :48:07.That is a good job mixing up the serve.
:48:08. > :48:20.Settled into the Centre Court match and he keeps the lead.
:48:21. > :48:28.There are bound to be some people asking where has he been? A decent
:48:29. > :48:34.junior career, always a good guy to have around, loaded with talent, he
:48:35. > :48:39.played squash and tennis, clearly a good all-rounder. Where was he? It
:48:40. > :48:42.is a self discipline issue. He was sent home from Australia for not
:48:43. > :48:49.having a racket to practice and his funding was cut. The same story. But
:48:50. > :48:55.now a 25 with Jennifer his girlfriend with him advising him and
:48:56. > :49:00.helping him he has suddenly got to this stage. Let's hope he sticks
:49:01. > :49:10.with it. These days players peak in their late 20s, early 30s. Everybody
:49:11. > :49:26.is interested in this match. Next time the roof closes, he might want
:49:27. > :49:28.to think about going somewhere else? Perched in the Royal box is Mr and
:49:29. > :50:01.misses Federer watching their son. Great hands. He is trying everything
:50:02. > :50:04.and it is starting to work. An overhead from the baseline. Federer
:50:05. > :52:02.cannot believe what he is seeing. And Pedro's eight at 34 he has done
:52:03. > :52:09.it all in the game. Marcus Willis at 25 can still make his weight in the
:52:10. > :52:11.game. 49 of the players are 29 years of age or older. The average age is
:52:12. > :54:28.getting higher. He said no chance you disrespect me,
:54:29. > :54:33.the seven time champion from Switzerland.
:54:34. > :55:00.Have you checked the last time a club player has come from two sets
:55:01. > :55:00.down... I've done a lot but not that!
:55:01. > :55:06.STUDIO Loving the atmosphere on centre
:55:07. > :55:13.court, it's like a Davis Cup tie. Plenty happening outside but the
:55:14. > :55:17.rain has cleared. Not good news for Heather Watson. She took the first
:55:18. > :55:21.set 6-3 and now she is a break of serve down in the third. Not sure
:55:22. > :55:26.what's wrong with her but it is certainly going be German's way.
:55:27. > :55:31.That match is live on the red button. And Marcus Willis's good
:55:32. > :55:45.mate Dan Evans is out on court against Alexandr Dolgopolov. Going
:55:46. > :55:49.well for Dan Evans. 6-3, and on Court Number One you can also follow
:55:50. > :55:56.this online as well. They have not started yet. Grigor Dimitrov is
:55:57. > :56:00.taking on Gilles Simon. That will be a nice match. That is what is
:56:01. > :56:16.happening outside, but back under the roof we go.
:56:17. > :57:13.UMPIRE: Mr Willis is challenging the call.
:57:14. > :57:21.And here we go, it is in! He has had plenty of challenges at Club
:57:22. > :57:41.matches. You definitely need them. It is the
:57:42. > :58:23.first time I have heard people applaud when Federer has missed!
:58:24. > :59:14.He loves that afflict lob. For a split second it looked like maybe
:59:15. > :59:40.that would have been the right shot had it been deeper. -- conflict.
:59:41. > :59:56.Happy to cut it quite that close. Well played from break point down.
:59:57. > :00:03.He talked about concentration being more difficult to maintain. On the
:00:04. > :00:08.subject of experience he says sometimes it is a hindrance. He
:00:09. > :00:17.wants to play like an 18-year-old who knows nothing, that free spirit.
:00:18. > :00:26.You can see the type of level that Willis had when he played some of
:00:27. > :00:49.these rallies. That ball was dipping rather quickly. It was well handled.
:00:50. > :01:04.He had rojo backing up on that second serve.
:01:05. > :01:41.He is feeding off the crowd's energy.
:01:42. > :01:50.Of all the people who have helped him over time, the parents who have
:01:51. > :01:55.stayed with him, his new girlfriend, this lovely Jennifer, his family,
:01:56. > :01:59.and he has stayed on the road in some of the lesser-known venues on
:02:00. > :02:04.the road, until you get it yourself it will not happen. He had all the
:02:05. > :02:11.help in the world, he was an excellent junior at 15. They all
:02:12. > :02:15.told him the same stuff, go to bed earlier, eat Right, now he gets it.
:02:16. > :02:24.I hope he does well from here on whatever happens. It has been a
:02:25. > :02:28.lovely story. So he wasted a lot of time and years and he has got an
:02:29. > :02:37.opportunity to make up for some of that. It would be a shame if he did
:02:38. > :02:46.not. My dentist does not look like that.
:02:47. > :04:43.She has been a great influence on Marcus here.
:04:44. > :05:01.Federer is going to make him work that much harder.
:05:02. > :05:12.It is not going to be easy for him to do. You cannot challenge your own
:05:13. > :05:14.serve? As far as I knew you cannot, in the seniors, yes you can, but not
:05:15. > :05:32.here. That was a beautiful shot. He has
:05:33. > :05:43.tried this numerous times. Federer has been onto it.
:05:44. > :05:50.That is exactly what you expect from a guy who has been there and done
:05:51. > :06:01.that, one of the all-time greats. Arguably one of the all-time greats.
:06:02. > :06:17.This is happening way too fast for Willis.
:06:18. > :06:28.The fairy tale had at least a few moments. Reality has set in. On
:06:29. > :06:37.Centre Court playing Roger Federer, you can understand it. Andy Murray
:06:38. > :06:43.in 2012. Seven victories. The greatest match I have ever seen
:06:44. > :06:48.without doubt involve Roger Federer on this very court against Rafael
:06:49. > :06:57.Nadal. He has given us stunning memories here. He did something
:06:58. > :07:03.pretty quickly I did not anticipate which was break Pete Sampras' record
:07:04. > :07:07.of 14. He used to be the king of discord. For ten or 12 years it was
:07:08. > :07:51.Pete Sampras. UMPIRE: Let, second serve. This is
:07:52. > :08:08.good, he gets a second serve? That is the new rule.
:08:09. > :08:17.That was unusual to say the least to see him miss that ball. You feel the
:08:18. > :08:56.pressure to close this out. Even seven time Wimbledon champion
:08:57. > :09:09.are human. Two inexplicable misses. But they shrug it off so easily and
:09:10. > :10:43.so well. Just move on. He is out. As Federer advances, the
:10:44. > :10:48.handshake will be warm. What a wonderful tournament and what a
:10:49. > :10:55.great story for Marcus Willis. We hope that he pushes on and uses this
:10:56. > :11:01.as a platform for greater things. He had a huge squad in, friends, family
:11:02. > :11:24.and relatives to support him against one of the best.
:11:25. > :11:30.Now he is getting emotional now. That is right, you have done
:11:31. > :11:52.something really good. Roger Federer will be back for more.
:11:53. > :11:57.Whilst Willis could not get another victory at the Championships, and a
:11:58. > :12:13.victory, Federer is going for an eighth title. Goodbye, Marcus. Look
:12:14. > :12:19.at that. Just hang in with Roger. Exactly. He is standing next to
:12:20. > :12:35.Roger Federer. Who would ever have thought that was even possible. His
:12:36. > :12:42.mum are here, Cathy and James are so proud of their boy. He wants to play
:12:43. > :12:49.this Club match tomorrow. It might be a bit of a let down. There they
:12:50. > :12:53.are. I would recommend that his shoulder is hurting a little bit.
:12:54. > :13:00.Take a break and hang around Wimbledon. An interesting match.
:13:01. > :13:04.Roger Federer is through to the third round. He is talking to Gary
:13:05. > :13:08.Richardson. Many congratulations on your win.
:13:09. > :13:15.You have experienced so many things on Centre Court and today was very
:13:16. > :13:18.different against your opponent, wasn't it? Very different, I thought
:13:19. > :13:23.Marcus brought some unbelievable energy to the court with his fans
:13:24. > :13:27.and with his personality, so it was very refreshing to play against an
:13:28. > :13:31.opponent like this who drew in the crowd and made some great
:13:32. > :13:37.shotmaking. He played some great shots, but at times you were playing
:13:38. > :13:40.most of the crowd. I always knew it would be a completely different
:13:41. > :13:45.match that everything I have played here before at Wimbledon. For me it
:13:46. > :13:49.is always very special to play on Centre Court at Wimbledon, but for
:13:50. > :13:54.him it was the first time. It was like when I walked out in 2001
:13:55. > :13:58.against Pete and I had nothing to lose and you can just enjoy
:13:59. > :14:01.yourself. Marcus did that wonderfully and I had the pressure
:14:02. > :14:02.on my shoulders even though I thought it was a pressure
:14:03. > :14:24.pre-tournament. Yes, my mindset going in was that I
:14:25. > :14:31.was playing a player ranked top 50. I wish the best for him, I hope he
:14:32. > :14:38.can rise in the rankings and it was a pleasure for me to play against
:14:39. > :14:43.him. How is your fitness? Do you feel you are 100%? How do you feel
:14:44. > :14:47.tonight? It's the second round, the grass is still very fresh so it's
:14:48. > :14:51.difficult to move on it. You have to be careful not to slip around. Tough
:14:52. > :14:56.playing against an opponent who is coming in a lot. Obviously I'm happy
:14:57. > :15:00.to be in the third round. Well done on your win.
:15:01. > :15:04.STUDIO One thing is the shore, Roger will
:15:05. > :15:09.never give anything away about any injury at all. This is a moment
:15:10. > :15:14.Marcus Willis will never forget. How gracious of Roger to congratulate
:15:15. > :15:18.him. He's been following the story, he said he's been watching Marcus
:15:19. > :15:22.come through and reading about him. He's certainly had his moment and
:15:23. > :15:29.given us someone the full memories over the past few days. I hope you
:15:30. > :15:31.enjoy his experience on centre court. Let's hear what he has to
:15:32. > :15:39.say. Many congratulations. Tell me about
:15:40. > :15:47.the experience of being out there on centre court. Yeah, it's daunting,
:15:48. > :15:52.it's tough. I was playing all right, panicking a bit on the big points
:15:53. > :15:58.but I settled into the match. I played a bad game at 4-4 in the
:15:59. > :16:03.third but he does that committee puts you under a lot of pressure.
:16:04. > :16:06.There were times when you were celebrating, you were hitting
:16:07. > :16:11.fantastic shots and it was almost like you have won! Yes, I'm enjoying
:16:12. > :16:15.it out there. If I'm playing well and competing with Roger Federer for
:16:16. > :16:19.a couple of sets, I'm doing the right thing. I still have a lot of
:16:20. > :16:28.improving to do. What sort of springboard do you hope it can be
:16:29. > :16:32.for your career? I just need to keep going and... I'm out of the
:16:33. > :16:36.tournament. It sounds funny but I'm disappointed to lose, I went out
:16:37. > :16:40.there hoping to win. It's been a fantastic few weeks. You can hold
:16:41. > :16:44.your head very high. You said in the build-up to this match you haven't
:16:45. > :16:48.always been quite as dedicated. Do you think you might sort of change
:16:49. > :16:51.now? Over the past few years I've been a lot better but the results
:16:52. > :16:57.did not come straightaway. I'm just going to keep doing what I've been
:16:58. > :17:03.doing. I'm going to knuckle down and use experiences like this to make me
:17:04. > :17:10.contribute even harder. Jamie Vardy has shown in football, a non-league
:17:11. > :17:14.player five years ago and now an England player. Can you draw
:17:15. > :17:18.comparisons? He's been playing fantastically well, what a story.
:17:19. > :17:23.I'm just going to keep my head down and keep working. I know you don't
:17:24. > :17:26.know where you're playing next week but sometime in the next month there
:17:27. > :17:31.will be a tournament somewhere in the world. How many people will be
:17:32. > :17:36.watching your next match, do you think? I have no idea. The crowd
:17:37. > :17:39.have been amazing today, thanks to them. You will have a little
:17:40. > :17:45.celebration tonight? I'm absolutely exhausted, so I might wait and let
:17:46. > :17:50.things calm down. I find myself a beer now! You have, go and enjoy it.
:17:51. > :17:55.He's probably earned himself a couple! Tim is with me in the studio
:17:56. > :17:58.and we can talk to our commentary team just before the next
:17:59. > :18:03.commentators come in, because they are going to put another match on
:18:04. > :18:10.Centre Court. Mac, that was pretty special, it was like a Davis Cup tie
:18:11. > :18:14.on Centre court. It was fun, there was a lot of energy like a football
:18:15. > :18:17.match. I think that's what we expected and hoped for. He was
:18:18. > :18:23.clearly quite overwhelmed in the beginning and it was a bit nerve
:18:24. > :18:26.wracking that it would be a complete and utter mismatch. Once he settled
:18:27. > :18:30.and got the game under his belt he started to play a bit better. He
:18:31. > :18:34.started to throw the kitchen sink at Federer, which was fun. I hope he
:18:35. > :18:39.doesn't stick with it, commit and see what he's made of, see what he's
:18:40. > :18:44.got. It's easy to get fired up when you're playing Roger Federer at
:18:45. > :18:49.Wimbledon, that's a no-brainer. Where is he playing next week? That
:18:50. > :18:53.club match or something... He's playing in the Coventry league. He's
:18:54. > :18:59.got to fire up tomorrow, he's got a big match! I was looking for him to
:19:00. > :19:06.try to get eight games in a shirt, a souvenir from Federer, but I didn't
:19:07. > :19:11.quite see the eight. If they let him in the locker room after the match,
:19:12. > :19:14.he can get it! He looked like he competed well in the second and
:19:15. > :19:18.third sets because he's quite unorthodox, it looked like he was
:19:19. > :19:22.hitting his spots well on the server. A couple of nervous moments
:19:23. > :19:27.in the third set. I think he's actually got some pretty good hands.
:19:28. > :19:32.Obviously the fitness has been a big issue and his movement is a big
:19:33. > :19:36.issue. To me he's got an ability to use different shots. He's good at
:19:37. > :19:41.the net. He could get fitter, so let's hope he does that for
:19:42. > :19:47.starters. As long as you go out and do the best you can and maximise
:19:48. > :19:52.what you've got, your ability, then you've got nothing to do except feel
:19:53. > :19:56.some pride. When he gets something like that in a losing effort and you
:19:57. > :19:59.walk onto the centre Court at Wimbledon, you had better commit. It
:20:00. > :20:06.would be an absolute shame if he didn't. Chris had a run like that in
:20:07. > :20:11.2008. He went through qualifying and the prequalifying and everyone got
:20:12. > :20:15.terribly excited, there were pictures in the newspapers... What
:20:16. > :20:21.happened to him? He's coaching in the doubles, he's still in the game.
:20:22. > :20:26.But he said, about Marcus, he makes the game ugly and awkward to play
:20:27. > :20:33.against, and that's a big plus. Making people play worse than you...
:20:34. > :20:38.Maybe he can hire Radek Stepanek as a coach! He could learn from him!
:20:39. > :20:43.What advice would you give him, Mac? You talked about his strengths, the
:20:44. > :20:48.serving and volleys. It seems to be a game suited to grass. He has to be
:20:49. > :20:52.able to move on to other services -- surfaces as well. The reality check
:20:53. > :20:58.might be that, I haven't seen him play on any other surface apart from
:20:59. > :21:06.highlights on YouTube. These days it's more about movement and
:21:07. > :21:11.athleticism. On grass people stay back a lot. He's more old school,
:21:12. > :21:16.and anomaly, trying to rob shots and volleys. He's got to be able to move
:21:17. > :21:20.on a slower hard court and God forbid to see him on clay, what
:21:21. > :21:24.happens there! There are some issues but at this particular point that
:21:25. > :21:30.should be easy inspiration to try to get as fit as possible. Absolutely,
:21:31. > :21:34.OK, Mac. Andy Carroll thank you very much. Tim, hopefully it has whetted
:21:35. > :21:38.the appetite. When you put in the hard work, and he has, he's lost
:21:39. > :21:44.weight and train hard, just to feel what it's like to be playing matches
:21:45. > :21:49.on the big stage, it has to motivate him? No doubt about it. We've
:21:50. > :21:54.reflected on that journey. This was his eighth match and he had never
:21:55. > :22:00.even played a match let alone won a match at to a level. To beat a guy
:22:01. > :22:05.like Ricardas Berankis, it's a great achievement on any surface.
:22:06. > :22:09.Hopefully he will go away and decompress and soak up the last ten
:22:10. > :22:13.or 12 days of action and then think how am I going to move forward?
:22:14. > :22:19.Everything John talked about, he has to get fitter again. He has to
:22:20. > :22:23.improve his forehand. He struggles to generate pace. He has to keep
:22:24. > :22:28.working at those strengths, because he has got a good lefty turf and
:22:29. > :22:32.keep moving forward, not a lot of people do that. He's got a lot of
:22:33. > :22:37.challenges ahead but hopefully he will continue to embrace them. Let's
:22:38. > :22:42.look back at some of the best moments of his match-up on Centre
:22:43. > :22:47.Court. This was a nice moment, Roger letting him walk out in front. We
:22:48. > :22:55.were down there, it was such a huge cheer and he will never forget that.
:22:56. > :23:00.Definitely not. In the warm up he got a cheer from the crowd. This is
:23:01. > :23:07.where he is dangerous. Good variation, good slice, good feel for
:23:08. > :23:13.the game. A couple of shots, as this lob shows, he will remember these
:23:14. > :23:17.points when he has got the seven time champion running around Centre
:23:18. > :23:23.Court. We knew he was nervous in the first set and he looked nervous, but
:23:24. > :23:28.once he got himself into it, for two sets he was competitive with the
:23:29. > :23:35.greatest player of all time! Ras can be a bit of a leveller. It's still
:23:36. > :23:43.lush out there. -- grass can be a leveller. His attitude, saying, how
:23:44. > :23:52.far was that in? I loved his attitude. He has really thrived in
:23:53. > :23:59.it. Not necessarily that difficult when you're playing in front of
:24:00. > :24:03.15,000 people at home! We see this sport is so hard and it's so
:24:04. > :24:07.disciplined, to see someone out there enjoying the moment and
:24:08. > :24:13.embracing it... Absolutely, it is very special. Saying at home in the
:24:14. > :24:17.biggest tournament in the world is not that difficult. In a month's
:24:18. > :24:21.time when he is playing a Futures event in the far east or Central
:24:22. > :24:26.America, when there are a couple of men and their dog watching, then
:24:27. > :24:30.it's harder to embrace it. But that's where he's at. It will be
:24:31. > :24:37.interesting to see what this does for his ranking. He was 772 coming
:24:38. > :24:41.into prequalifying. To have qualified and then won a round, it
:24:42. > :24:45.will probably triple or quadruple the number of points he had and get
:24:46. > :24:51.him into some tournaments. Roger understands it, he gets it. He said
:24:52. > :24:55.it's not just a great story for tennis, it's a great story. And
:24:56. > :24:59.hopefully an inspiration to youngsters, to say you can go out
:25:00. > :25:05.there and enjoy yourself. Absolutely. When you reflect on how
:25:06. > :25:09.far he's come and the interest it's created, it's absolutely massive. We
:25:10. > :25:12.needed that at this time of year, with tennis being the focal point of
:25:13. > :25:17.British sport right now, the more young kids we can get playing the
:25:18. > :25:20.game, you've got Murray and Federer and Djokovic who inspire so many,
:25:21. > :25:24.but having a home-grown hero like this for the first couple of days of
:25:25. > :25:32.the championships can only be a good thing. His serve, he known as
:25:33. > :25:37.Willbomb, an as a lefty serve that's very effective. It is. You don't see
:25:38. > :25:45.that many lefty serves but he is able to hit his spots. He hits the
:25:46. > :25:54.good slower one out wide and he can hit it on the deuce box. I'm so glad
:25:55. > :25:57.the tournament committee put this on centre court. It would have been
:25:58. > :26:03.lost if it was out on Court one. With the roof closed it was almost
:26:04. > :26:07.more magical, wasn't it? It was so noisy! When you put the lid on
:26:08. > :26:12.15,000 people it really keeps the noise inside. I think it's been a
:26:13. > :26:17.magical story and when you think about a person coming through that
:26:18. > :26:20.journey, number 772, playing the seven times champion on centre
:26:21. > :26:25.court, I've been asking a few people what is the lowest ranked player
:26:26. > :26:28.ever to play a singles match on Centre Court, I haven't found the
:26:29. > :26:32.answer but I'm going to look into it! What I thought was also magical
:26:33. > :26:36.at the end was seeing his parents embrace. He's talked about how much
:26:37. > :26:40.they gave up to help him in the early years. Your parents did, my
:26:41. > :26:45.parents did. For them to see that, they will never forget that. It's
:26:46. > :26:49.been a very special time for us to watch, the spectators, but family
:26:50. > :26:52.and friends who been so close, they will have lived through the highs
:26:53. > :26:57.and lows. This certainly has been a very big high. I think he will go
:26:58. > :27:04.out and celebrate with his lads who have been queueing for a feed days.
:27:05. > :27:13.Yes, he can afford to buy a few drinks now! That is the difference
:27:14. > :27:19.can he has earned ?50,000. He said... Now this will give him the
:27:20. > :27:23.chance to travel and do more. It is expensive down at that end of the
:27:24. > :27:27.rankings. No doubt about it, this is an opportunity for him to reinvest.
:27:28. > :27:31.If you're not making any money, you're not getting any income,
:27:32. > :27:34.you're looking for a bit of sponsorship or funding from the LTA.
:27:35. > :27:39.It's an opportunity for him to invest in himself. Post-Wimbledon
:27:40. > :27:44.you're going to be looking to play abroad and see what opportunities
:27:45. > :27:49.there will be, whether it is Futures or Challengers, there's not a lot of
:27:50. > :27:53.prize money at that level. Hopefully he can get a good schedule and keep
:27:54. > :27:58.moving up the rankings. He can certainly invest in a couple of
:27:59. > :28:01.beers tonight! It is one of the magical days of Wimbledon. It was a
:28:02. > :28:07.great story. Thank you very much, Tim. There is going to be another
:28:08. > :28:10.match on Centre Court but outside, it has been raining and play has
:28:11. > :28:17.been stopped on the outside courts, but as you can see, the umbrellas up
:28:18. > :28:23.and play is likely to start again at 7pm. Hopefully still some more play
:28:24. > :28:27.fall of those people who have waited all day to watch the tennis. The
:28:28. > :28:32.lucky ones have been on centre court but not a lot outside. Hopefully
:28:33. > :28:36.some still to come this evening. We have had some matches completed and
:28:37. > :28:44.some results to bring you, starting with Britain's women's number one,
:28:45. > :28:48.Jo Konta. Seeded for the first time ever and winning her first match at
:28:49. > :28:54.the championships, defeating Monica Puig 6-1, 7-5.
:28:55. > :29:03.And Petra Kvitova, twice a champion here, seeded ten in this tournament,
:29:04. > :29:13.she has come through 6-0, 6-4 over Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Always a
:29:14. > :29:18.danger on this surface. Well, Alexander Zverev has already proved
:29:19. > :29:21.he's a big danger on men's tour. He's seeded 24 and he beat Roger
:29:22. > :29:30.Federer in the semifinals of a warm up tournament on grass in Halle. He
:29:31. > :29:37.has come through comfortably against a tough opponent, France's
:29:38. > :29:41.Paul-Henri Mathieu. Want to look out for in the future. So is Austria's
:29:42. > :29:50.Dominic Thiem. He is seeded eight and he has come through against
:29:51. > :29:53.Austria's Florian Meyer. Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev two
:29:54. > :29:59.rising stars of the game. The one at the top of the rankings, there is
:30:00. > :30:02.only one, Novak Djokovic. He was on centre court earlier this afternoon.
:30:03. > :30:07.A wonderful match, so entertaining. Great tennis and he came through in
:30:08. > :30:12.that tie-break 7-5 to defeat a Adrian Mannarino, who is celebrating
:30:13. > :30:22.his 20th birthday today. Djokovic just too good on the day. He does
:30:23. > :30:26.his bow to all four corners. Getting the appreciation from the whole
:30:27. > :30:36.crowd and I'm sure his coach, Boris Becker. He's looking in awesome
:30:37. > :30:42.form. Well, Heather Watson was playing Annika Beck on Court 12 when
:30:43. > :30:47.she had a very, very heavy fall. This is just before the rain came
:30:48. > :30:52.down. Heather obviously concerned. It is rather nasty, not sure I do
:30:53. > :30:57.actually want to see it too much, but there we go. She has had it
:30:58. > :31:02.strapped, she had the icepack on for some time and she had it strapped,
:31:03. > :31:07.but they are now off the court and Annika Beck was going so well in
:31:08. > :31:13.that match. Watson took the first set 6-3. Today she hasn't dropped a
:31:14. > :31:20.game. They will be resuming their match hopefully very soon if the
:31:21. > :31:24.weather holds. So, we are going to Centre Court. There will be another
:31:25. > :31:29.match played. It has been moved from court three and it is another tough
:31:30. > :31:36.first round, Tsvetana Pironkova who has been a semifinalist here,
:31:37. > :31:39.against Belinda Bencic. She is seeded seven. Just got under way,
:31:40. > :31:43.it's in the opening game. Let's join our commentators.
:31:44. > :31:53.COMMENTATOR: Yes, the opening game here on centre.
:31:54. > :32:16.Explosive shot from Pironkova. Really powers through. This is where
:32:17. > :32:19.today's ladies are so comfortable on this surface. They have had their
:32:20. > :32:34.best results on grass and it's going to be an absolute battle today.
:32:35. > :32:43.Clean, concise hitting from the world number 71. Pironkova is also
:32:44. > :32:50.coming in with some really good confidence and backing up with a
:32:51. > :32:59.fabulous performance at the French Open. She lost to Samantha Stosur in
:33:00. > :33:03.the quarterfinals. Had a great win against Agnieszka Radwanska, which
:33:04. > :33:10.will help her confidence. She will have a lot of self belief. She has
:33:11. > :33:14.won nine of the last 11 matches, Belinda Bencic recovering slightly
:33:15. > :33:18.from injury, missed the whole of the clay-court season with a back
:33:19. > :33:19.injury. Slowly getting back into her groove and finding her feet on
:33:20. > :33:34.grass. -- Belinda Bencic fascinates me,
:33:35. > :33:38.actually. She plays tennis a bit like a chess player. She's had a lot
:33:39. > :33:42.of work with Martina Hingis and her mother, so she really understands
:33:43. > :34:02.how to construct points. There is Martina, sitting next to the father.
:34:03. > :34:10.It's just great to see players who think about how they want to play.
:34:11. > :34:14.They don't just go out there and play linear tennis, hard and fast
:34:15. > :34:16.through the middle of the court. They learn how to open up the court
:34:17. > :34:39.and be aggressive on the right ball. That is exquisite from Pironkova.
:34:40. > :34:47.Beautifully weighted lob. Three early break points. You just have to
:34:48. > :34:53.wonder as well, Bencic is coming here after losing in the first round
:34:54. > :35:03.at Eastbourne last year. Things not going as well for her this year.
:35:04. > :35:09.You can do all the running you like if you are Pironkova, but that was
:35:10. > :35:43.hit straight down the middle. Yeah, good recovery here from
:35:44. > :35:48.Bencic. Of course these two players have been waiting for what seems
:35:49. > :35:52.like an eternity to get on court. This match was supposed to be on
:35:53. > :35:57.Court three. It's been moved here at the last minute to centre court.
:35:58. > :36:00.When you deal with the fact that not just your playing later but a
:36:01. > :36:02.totally different atmosphere and feel, you're under the roof and on
:36:03. > :36:25.centre court. Yeah, I love Pironkova. Her best
:36:26. > :36:29.asset I think would be her movement. She's an interesting character, she
:36:30. > :36:35.doesn't give you much. Her game face pretty solid. Great athlete on the
:36:36. > :36:39.court. I don't think it would have bothered her, in fact I think it
:36:40. > :36:43.would have rather excited her that she is playing on Centre Court.
:36:44. > :36:49.She's very confident at the moment, played a lot of matches on Philippe
:36:50. > :37:32.Chatrier in Paris. This will not be a daunting point for her.
:37:33. > :37:42.Yeah, beautifully placed that time from Bencic. I don't think there's a
:37:43. > :37:47.player that uses their legs better than this. Look how low she gets
:37:48. > :37:48.down, she really sets that outside leg behind the ball. Perfect play
:37:49. > :38:25.for grass. Big, heavy hitting from both these
:38:26. > :38:30.two, so early on. I just love this young lady at 17, she has won four
:38:31. > :38:35.tournaments. She just comes with bucket loads of character and she's
:38:36. > :38:37.certainly be player of the future. Just 19 years of age, still doing
:38:38. > :39:00.remarkable things. Yes. All about the placement for
:39:01. > :39:05.Bencic. The shot before, she just rolled her wrists so beautifully to
:39:06. > :39:10.take her opponent out of court. Absolutely, she is so calm with her
:39:11. > :39:12.shotmaking. She just waits for Pironkova to commit and then goes
:39:13. > :39:58.back in behind. I think if you're a coach and you
:39:59. > :40:03.wanted to model a perfect grass court game around any two players on
:40:04. > :40:11.the tour, I think you're looking at them right now. There's few other
:40:12. > :40:16.girls on the tour who play as flat, as effective on grass as these two
:40:17. > :40:50.ladies who are on the court right now.
:40:51. > :41:00.Oh! Bencic has come out firing in the second set. Well, the crowd are
:41:01. > :41:04.really going to see a fantastic match today. The conditions on the
:41:05. > :41:08.court are playing a bit slower. They're going to have a lot of long
:41:09. > :41:13.rallies. This is just really good tennis. Two break points then for
:41:14. > :41:38.Pironkova to defend. Well, Bencic needs just one. Came
:41:39. > :41:42.back from love in her own service game and she has broken Pironkova.
:41:43. > :41:58.She has the early break here on centre. A little bit unusual, the
:41:59. > :42:06.way Bencic says. Considering Melanie Molitor, Martina Hingis's mother and
:42:07. > :42:10.had a lot of say in building her game. But she's a bit more extreme
:42:11. > :42:17.than Martina. She has a different bodies Lyle -- body style as well,
:42:18. > :42:21.Martina was a bit more slight and she could use her opponent's ball a
:42:22. > :42:26.bit more. But you look at Belinda and she's quite a strong girl. She's
:42:27. > :42:30.tall and she uses her physicality well. I love how she uses her legs.
:42:31. > :42:36.I remember seeing her in juniors when she was 13 or 14 and she spent
:42:37. > :42:41.hours and hours on the back courts and feeding and just working really
:42:42. > :42:50.hard. She's just a product of hard work. She's just a really strong
:42:51. > :42:52.character when she's on the court, she is thinking, I just love her
:42:53. > :43:07.attitude and what she does out there. A view more people coming to
:43:08. > :43:13.join us here on Centre Court. When they hear a rising star of women's
:43:14. > :43:19.tennis and a former semifinalist, they think, why not?
:43:20. > :44:38.Katarina that is great play. Terrific serving, great combinations
:44:39. > :45:25.from Bencic. Great action on her serve. And accurate.
:45:26. > :45:32.Plenty of moisture inside the Centre Court with the roof on. The ball is
:45:33. > :45:45.sitting up a little. Just a little bit slower.
:45:46. > :45:57.She had to play one more shot but she consolidates and confirms the
:45:58. > :46:01.break. This is a player that is coming back from not just one but
:46:02. > :46:05.two serious injuries. The back injury that ruled her out of the
:46:06. > :46:09.clay-court season and a thigh injury in the grass court season. She has
:46:10. > :46:18.not played much tennis. Yes, exactly.
:46:19. > :46:26.You've got to love that. Using the pace from Pironkova's serve, leaning
:46:27. > :47:01.into it and cuts off the angle. This is perfect returning.
:47:02. > :47:09.She really likes to move the ball around. She is confident with going
:47:10. > :47:17.line, Bencic. She doesn't just play passively through the centre of the
:47:18. > :47:29.court. There are so many shots where she is not doing something of it.
:47:30. > :47:38.She is not only playing on the shelves, the return of serve is so
:47:39. > :47:50.effective. She is getting it deep and using all of the angles. That is
:47:51. > :48:20.solid, 85%. Three more break points for the 19-year-old.
:48:21. > :48:30.She is not to be messed with in this sort of form. Another break. And we
:48:31. > :48:34.are 18 minutes into this match. If you look at these players and the
:48:35. > :48:41.differences of what they bring to the match. The big thing that Linda
:48:42. > :48:47.Bencic can ring is that she likes to take the ball early. We will see how
:48:48. > :48:52.finishing the ball a lot more at the net and Pironkova. That is perhaps
:48:53. > :48:57.where she can exploit Pironkova's game. She knows she is not going to
:48:58. > :49:02.move forward. If I was Bencic, I would be chipping and ringing
:49:03. > :49:07.Pironkova in a bit. She doesn't have great hands at the net. She is not
:49:08. > :49:10.comfortable moving forward, she doesn't like to finish the point at
:49:11. > :49:16.the net unless it is a high drive volley. The traditional volley, she
:49:17. > :49:24.is not great. I think we will see a little of that from the lender. Just
:49:25. > :49:29.play a few mind games here. This is Pironkova's favourite surface. She
:49:30. > :49:37.reached the semifinal back in 2010. She beat Venus Williams and lost in
:49:38. > :49:41.the semifinal. She then reached the quarterfinals a year later. She
:49:42. > :49:44.loves playing here and the grass. But it is a different set of
:49:45. > :49:50.circumstances when you play under the roof. So many people have talked
:49:51. > :49:52.about the different dimension. Bencic owning the stage here, she
:49:53. > :50:15.leads 4-1. Just about got away with it. One
:50:16. > :50:20.thing to watch. We listen and we hear coaches talk about getting your
:50:21. > :50:22.outside leg behind the ball. That is one thing Bencic does incredibly
:50:23. > :50:48.well. Just absolutely no spin at all
:50:49. > :50:53.coming from Pironkova's racket. You could read the writing of the ball
:50:54. > :51:17.the minute it comes off the string, it is so flat.
:51:18. > :51:25.Not enough from Pironkova. She has been moved this way and that way.
:51:26. > :51:31.Bencic just finds the killer to rub it in. It is terrific awareness at
:51:32. > :51:33.all times for Bencic. Anything short she is up at the net and very
:51:34. > :52:06.comfortable moving forwards. First challenge for Hawk-Eye. Oh.
:52:07. > :52:28.Well in. At least a good millimetre. Once again, Bencic up 40-0, eight .4
:52:29. > :53:02.5-1. It is on the line. She has not put a
:53:03. > :53:07.foot wrong so far, Belinda Bencic. I love how she is controlling this
:53:08. > :53:13.match. See how she uses that outside leg. She finds it so easy then to
:53:14. > :53:14.move forwards and take the ball early. Constantly looking to take
:53:15. > :53:58.charge of the match. It was gaping, wasn't it? Sometimes
:53:59. > :54:03.you have too much time. That is when a mistake can creep in. A rare
:54:04. > :54:28.mistake from Bencic. That is cheeky. Beautifully
:54:29. > :54:33.executed. Look at the composure here from Bencic. She is so calm and
:54:34. > :54:36.thinking at all times, very clear with her decisions. Amazing for a
:54:37. > :54:49.19-year-old. Clever, took the weight of that
:54:50. > :54:51.completely, just left the slice and the grass do the talking, spinning
:54:52. > :55:49.away. Just 85 mph, that serve. That is just too good from Bencic.
:55:50. > :55:54.How about this for placement? It is that extreme grip on the forehand.
:55:55. > :56:04.Just finds contact in front, nice and easy with that. And she has
:56:05. > :56:16.found it again. She is just having a field day, Belinda Bencic. She is
:56:17. > :56:27.enjoying that. Martina Hingis is enjoying it as well.
:56:28. > :56:41.One set point saved but still more to come here. Needs to kill the pace
:56:42. > :57:00.of this first set which is racing away from her.
:57:01. > :57:10.There is her father, a constant companion, always travelling with
:57:11. > :57:20.her. Has been coaching her for her whole career. He has done a great
:57:21. > :57:52.job. Just thought about questioning it. Set point here to defend.
:57:53. > :58:03.Gutsy tennis from Pironkova. For the first time in the match, she has
:58:04. > :58:09.fought an and taking the battle back to Bencic. She is having to find
:58:10. > :58:13.something extra. She can do damage with that backhand, hitting it so
:58:14. > :58:16.hard and flat, penetrating into the corners and that gives her the
:58:17. > :58:43.opportunity to use the forehand a bit more, great clay.
:58:44. > :58:54.It is really interesting, at the US Open last year, the average rally
:58:55. > :58:56.was about 3.4, 3.5, for the women. And at the moment, Pironkova's
:58:57. > :59:29.average rally is 5.8. Off her serve. Didn't need to hit that shot. She
:59:30. > :59:37.went to a little bit too much. Bencic is winning the rallies taking
:59:38. > :59:41.about 4.2, 4.3. She is able to control the points a bit quicker off
:59:42. > :59:50.her own serve. Pironkova needing that extra shot. But what I find
:59:51. > :59:55.fascinating is that an grass she plays much faster than hard court
:59:56. > :00:00.and it is taking two extra shots to finish the points here. That is
:00:01. > :00:03.because of the dampness within the stadium, the moisture, it is putting
:00:04. > :00:31.a bit more weight on the ball. That is a fine comeback from
:00:32. > :00:35.Pironkova. Defended two set points. She is asking the question of her
:00:36. > :00:42.opponent. If you want this set, serve it out. Just looking at some
:00:43. > :00:49.of the quality of these points. The last point, incredible. The way
:00:50. > :00:56.Bencic is so confident off her return. This is a good serve, just
:00:57. > :01:00.look how far out wider she is. She rips it down the line, Pironkova
:01:01. > :01:04.having to come up with something, another level. A terrific forehand,
:01:05. > :01:09.which is not her strength on that side. She is having to play some
:01:10. > :01:15.really solid tennis just to hang in here and try to get a game. This is
:01:16. > :01:19.a great performance from Belinda Bencic. In another 12 months, if she
:01:20. > :01:26.can have a full 12 months are playing solid tennis, Bencic. We
:01:27. > :01:31.could look at a win at Wimbledon next year or the following year. I
:01:32. > :01:35.would really think that is going to happen for sure. At the moment,
:01:36. > :01:39.Serena and Muguruza are still leading the charge at in another 12
:01:40. > :01:44.months, if she doesn't have that gap she had this year. This young lady
:01:45. > :01:52.is going to win this tournament for sure. Centre Court under the roof,
:01:53. > :02:00.fourth match here today on day three of the Championships. First week.
:02:01. > :02:04.Bit of a bonus for the Centre Court crowd and those watching at home. It
:02:05. > :02:09.has been a mixed bag for those who have made their way here today with
:02:10. > :02:18.mother nature intervene in. That is the polite way of putting it. We are
:02:19. > :02:41.in England. Serving for the first set, 5-2.
:02:42. > :02:47.What is so beautiful about that backhand is she disguises it so
:02:48. > :02:53.well. One time ripping it crosscourt and then she delivers down the line.
:02:54. > :02:56.Look at her hands, stays low again and gets her body weight moving
:02:57. > :03:04.forward. I love looking at that outside leg. If you can just get
:03:05. > :03:09.players moving and setting up the shots with their feet as well as
:03:10. > :03:25.Belinda Bencic, it is remarkable. It is flying off the centre of the
:03:26. > :03:32.racket, isn't it? It is a lesson. It is amazing how she is playing. A
:03:33. > :03:34.total of 17 winners in this first set alone for Belinda Bencic, an
:03:35. > :03:53.astonishing figure. Anything you can do... Pironkova can
:03:54. > :03:58.do a little bit better. That is exactly what she needs to start
:03:59. > :04:02.doing. Use the line more, be more aggressive and try to dictate from
:04:03. > :04:37.that first shot. Don't let Bencic control.
:04:38. > :04:50.Where did that come from from Pironkova? Again, just looking for
:04:51. > :04:58.opportunities here. Trying to mix it up a little bit, hast to change it
:04:59. > :05:07.up a bit. She has saved two set points, can she say one more?
:05:08. > :05:21.No, that is your lot. Belinda Bencic taking control, not offering any
:05:22. > :05:27.more chances, she closes at the first set here in 35 minutes, 6-2.
:05:28. > :05:32.STUDIO: She knew this would be a tough first round and she is playing
:05:33. > :05:37.her top game at the moment. Bencic comfortably takes the first set 6-2.
:05:38. > :05:42.Centre Court continues under the roof I am sorry to say that outside,
:05:43. > :05:46.all of those spectators patiently waiting for play to resume on
:05:47. > :05:50.outside courts, the rain is falling quite heavily. It is quite dark,
:05:51. > :05:54.they will lose the light soon as well. The covers are on, no
:05:55. > :05:59.immediate prospect of play I am afraid. We will remain hopeful
:06:00. > :06:05.because they can play here if the clouds clear a little bit up until
:06:06. > :06:09.about 9p outside. Nobody giving up just yet. Whether we will get any
:06:10. > :06:12.more play this evening on the outside courts but great we will
:06:13. > :06:18.have play an centre, let go back there.
:06:19. > :06:25.COMMENTATOR: It is the positioning of Bencic that we have been
:06:26. > :06:29.impressed with in the first 35 minutes. How low she gets to the
:06:30. > :06:35.ball and how she is committed to the shot. For a player who has barely
:06:36. > :06:43.played any tennis. She is buying some terrific tennis out here,
:06:44. > :06:50.really enjoyable to watch. If you are Pironkova, what are you thinking
:06:51. > :06:57.here? Getting up after a two minute break to press that reset button. We
:06:58. > :07:00.have seen a few short balls, she has not mixed it up much in the first
:07:01. > :07:15.set, what will she be thinking now? There is an example of what Bencic
:07:16. > :07:20.is doing to Pironkova. She has to take a leaf out of that book, she
:07:21. > :07:25.needs to try and go down the line a little bit earlier in rallies. She
:07:26. > :07:33.is not able to control as quickly as Belinda. As we saw before, the
:07:34. > :07:49.average rally is 5.5 with Pironkova and 4.4 with Bencic.
:07:50. > :07:58.Belinda can just open up the court a lot better than Pironkova. Hope
:07:59. > :08:04.forehand crosscourt is more powerful, she is getting the short
:08:05. > :08:53.ball back and going for the line early.
:08:54. > :08:59.She didn't get it right on that occasion, Bencic. But how she can
:09:00. > :09:06.get that ball to penetrate through on the forehand. A little bit
:09:07. > :09:07.unlucky the butt that is what she is trying to set up. The pattern of
:09:08. > :09:32.play. And the other area where Belinda
:09:33. > :09:37.Bencic is so good. She has to come into the net 14 times and has
:09:38. > :09:42.executed on that is a good conversion rate. Pironkova just four
:09:43. > :10:02.times she has tried to move forwards.
:10:03. > :10:18.That is a fabulous comeback, great tennis.
:10:19. > :10:24.The other thing that is also interesting with Belinda Bencic, she
:10:25. > :10:29.really likes to move forward in the court. She wants to take that
:10:30. > :10:34.contact mice and early. 14 times she has come in but she is a good metre
:10:35. > :10:45.inside the net so she is pressing all the time. That is terrific
:10:46. > :10:48.quality, just one metre back, everything is looking to move
:10:49. > :10:51.forwards. That is great stuff for her and great as a shunning and
:10:52. > :11:13.mentality for grass. She just has to weather the storm,
:11:14. > :11:18.Pironkova. She has to hope that Bencic cannot keep this level up for
:11:19. > :11:30.another set. She has to be optimistic here.
:11:31. > :11:37.That is where she has got to be a little more assertive. She needs to
:11:38. > :11:45.try and press and move in the court a little bit more. Just doesn't have
:11:46. > :11:53.the weight of shot that Bencic has. She needs to take that step
:11:54. > :12:01.forwards. That is just ridiculously good. So good from Bencic. Again,
:12:02. > :12:07.her legs. She gets down so low. She neutralises this ball, terrific.
:12:08. > :12:20.That is perfect for grass court tennis.
:12:21. > :12:29.Those are the kind of shots that Pironkova has to make. Not just get
:12:30. > :12:35.back but do something with them. She is getting frustrated because the
:12:36. > :12:36.Bencic is playing so well, she can hit a good shot but it comes back
:12:37. > :12:55.with more on it. Right idea but let down in the
:12:56. > :14:39.execution. Just getting a little frustrated and
:14:40. > :14:44.impatient with that forehand. The forehand sits up a little bit more
:14:45. > :14:49.for Pironkova. She has to use a backhand and get the ball a bit flat
:14:50. > :15:15.and hard into the backhand side of Bencic, to then open up the court.
:15:16. > :15:26.Bencic is playing so subtly as well. Every so often she is going to fire
:15:27. > :15:33.down a thunderbolt. She's always keeping her opponent guessing. Isn't
:15:34. > :15:37.that a terrific view of the roof? So great that they can play here at
:15:38. > :15:44.Wimbledon. It was very frustrating at the French Open.
:15:45. > :15:52.She's down. It was really frustrating at the French Open,
:15:53. > :15:57.there were a couple of days when it just rained nonstop. Just to know
:15:58. > :16:01.that there is absolutely no tennis... Just seeing that slip by
:16:02. > :16:21.Bencic, the right foot just not gripping.
:16:22. > :16:28.So it easy to slip in the early days of the tournament as well,
:16:29. > :16:34.particularly when there is a bit of moisture on the court, sap in the
:16:35. > :16:38.grass. Particularly as players have to get used to a different style of
:16:39. > :16:45.footwork, the smaller steps, the adjusting steps.
:16:46. > :17:04.She reads this like a book, doesn't she? That is just such good
:17:05. > :17:07.returning. We've seen that time and time again. Another break point here
:17:08. > :17:24.for Bencic. Oh! So close. That really would have
:17:25. > :18:47.been amazing. She's got to keep the amount of
:18:48. > :18:53.balls in court, Pironkova. A high percentage of balls in, just
:18:54. > :18:55.frustrate Belinda a little. We've seen a couple of errors starting to
:18:56. > :19:22.creep in. That's another error, that is
:19:23. > :19:29.frustration. It's a long rally, but that is the sequence that Pironkova
:19:30. > :19:34.really needs to trust. She has to use that backhand more often,
:19:35. > :19:39.penetrate into Bencic's backhand. If she can make the rally is more like
:19:40. > :19:42.this, keep pushing Bencic around a bit, physically perhaps tire her a
:19:43. > :19:57.bit. Pironkova can run all year. Good game to win for Pironkova. She
:19:58. > :19:59.was broken early in the first set, she couldn't afford to be broken
:20:00. > :20:21.early in the second. brought three just in the bottom
:20:22. > :20:27.corner of the picture, where we should have been before the change.
:20:28. > :20:35.You can see Court Number One just in the distance. By 2019, that one will
:20:36. > :20:42.have a roof as well. The roof will be taken off there and year by year
:20:43. > :20:47.they will slowly make it ready. That will certainly help beat the battle
:20:48. > :20:51.with nature, won't it? Well, yeah. It's tough for everybody but it
:20:52. > :20:55.would certainly be great for these and spectators to watch more than
:20:56. > :21:02.one match and least. We are watching Centre Court. Like I said, at the
:21:03. > :21:06.French Open this year it was really frustrating not to have any action.
:21:07. > :21:07.You could feel the frustration with everybody walking around, just
:21:08. > :21:20.trying to find something to do. Interesting half of the draw, this
:21:21. > :21:31.one. Belinda Bencic in the same half as Serena Williams. Potential, if
:21:32. > :21:37.everything goes to plan, for her to meet in the semifinal. That's going
:21:38. > :21:39.to be an interesting one, for her. I'm sure plenty of other players
:21:40. > :22:03.have an opinion on that! Terrific anticipation here from
:22:04. > :22:12.Pironkova. That was a really tough volley to get up. Belinda did a
:22:13. > :22:19.great job of just trying to somehow get that volley over.
:22:20. > :22:29.It's just superb tennis. Spreads the court so well, opens the court up so
:22:30. > :22:33.wide with the serve and that leaves a big gap down the line for her to
:22:34. > :23:09.play into. Such simple but effective tennis.
:23:10. > :23:17.Didn't quite get to the pitch of that. Is just held up a bit and she
:23:18. > :23:21.didn't use her feet to take the one extra step. The contact is a bit
:23:22. > :23:33.low, she should have been another one or two feet inside the court.
:23:34. > :23:42.Wow! Look at that from Bencic. That was coming at a rate of knots. Soft
:23:43. > :23:49.hands. This is terrific tennis. What a shot from Pironkova. That just
:23:50. > :23:53.went through the air so quickly. She got the ball to dip and that's what
:23:54. > :24:20.you want, but just terrific hands from Bencic.
:24:21. > :24:35.Well, the quality of this match, James, is really, really high. I'm
:24:36. > :24:38.so impressed with the way both of these girls are playing, but Belinda
:24:39. > :24:51.Bencic, she's just a standout. Pironkova, this is her 14th season
:24:52. > :24:53.on the tour. So much experience, she's going to need every ounce of
:24:54. > :25:14.it here. Well, it's the teenager doing all
:25:15. > :25:20.the running, isn't it? Virtually every shot is right out of the meat
:25:21. > :25:24.of the racket. There is not one shot that Bencic isn't being effective
:25:25. > :25:28.on. From the middle of the court, she is splitting the court really
:25:29. > :25:32.well. She can go off with the backhand, she can go on with the
:25:33. > :25:36.forehand, she can go into the corners really well. So many layers
:25:37. > :26:47.get stuck playing in the middle of the court. -- so many players.
:26:48. > :26:58.APPLAUSE Well, that is hard, isn't it? When
:26:59. > :27:02.the forehand is going for the line for Pironkova, it's hard for her to
:27:03. > :27:09.move over quickly to the backhand and get outside the ball. Just
:27:10. > :27:13.skewing away from her racket. She's saved two break points in the last
:27:14. > :27:25.service game and she has got another two to save here.
:27:26. > :27:41.A demonstration of complete tennis here from Belinda Bencic.
:27:42. > :27:48.Frighteningly talented at just 19 years of age. Well, I think we knew,
:27:49. > :27:52.didn't we, when she was 17 years of age she won St Petersburg, hurt and
:27:53. > :28:03.Bosch, Tokyo. She can play on all surfaces. She's
:28:04. > :28:07.certainly one of the marketable players on the WTA Tour and she's
:28:08. > :28:14.going to be around for a long time. -- one of the marquee players.
:28:15. > :28:23.Amazing, look at that. And on the move, such a hard shot to hit. Such
:28:24. > :28:28.a smooth player, getting the racket nice and early back. As we saw
:28:29. > :28:34.before, positioning is key for her. She's always looking to move
:28:35. > :28:39.forwards. This one stays low. Judged with precision, down the line. Just
:28:40. > :28:45.incredible intuition for a young tennis player. She's so smart and
:28:46. > :28:49.she understands the dimensions of the court extremely well. The
:28:50. > :28:55.youngest player to break into the top ten since 2009. Just slightly
:28:56. > :28:59.fallen out because of injury problems to her back and then to her
:29:00. > :29:05.thigh. She is seeded number seven here. With the break in the second
:29:06. > :29:25.set. -- try that for size! This is a good
:29:26. > :29:30.option for Pironkova at the moment. If I was her I would be trying to
:29:31. > :29:37.change it up, change the pace, variation. That is smart play. That
:29:38. > :29:41.was better than an English kick, wasn't it? Did that hurt? You've
:29:42. > :29:43.been waiting for that for a long time!
:29:44. > :29:56.CHUCKLES I shouldn't say things like that, I
:29:57. > :30:03.should keep it a lot more Switzerland. Should be more neutral!
:30:04. > :30:06.Bencic, where is she from... Are you here all week?
:30:07. > :30:24.CHUCKLES Haven't seen a hick up from her yet,
:30:25. > :30:46.have we, Bencic? Terrific focus. She has been staying on track so far.
:30:47. > :30:53.Just catches the line. She's going to be rewarded if she has that
:30:54. > :30:56.mentality. She needs to keep looking for that ball to be a bit more
:30:57. > :31:01.aggressive of the forehand and then come forwards. This is not an easy
:31:02. > :31:03.shot either. We've seen a couple of times she hits the smash off the
:31:04. > :31:24.bounce. Oh! Wow. Another one. Well, if
:31:25. > :31:29.Serena Williams is watching this, she will be starting to think gosh,
:31:30. > :31:36.this player is really seeing it extremely well. This is fabulous
:31:37. > :31:37.grass court tennis. Look at that, such good balance. Nice early
:31:38. > :31:55.timing. And of course Serena Williams knows
:31:56. > :32:01.all about Belinda Bencic, because Bencic beat her en route to winning
:32:02. > :32:05.the title in Toronto last summer. She also beat Simona Halep and
:32:06. > :32:12.Eugenie Bouchard. Talk about turning points, that was a huge one for her.
:32:13. > :32:43.Yeah, nice touch there. Wow, there's nothing you can do about that. Does
:32:44. > :32:47.she believe, Louise? Does Pironkova believe she can beat Belinda Bencic
:32:48. > :32:49.on this sort of form? Well, you would have to think so. She's never
:32:50. > :33:09.beaten her before, but... -- spoiling us. Her dad approves of
:33:10. > :33:15.yellow yes, she plays points like this and goes out after and tries to
:33:16. > :33:19.get Bencic moving. Belinda Bencic is not one of the best movers on the
:33:20. > :33:22.tour. Her anticipation is incredible, her intuition is
:33:23. > :33:27.fabulous, but the movement, not so much.
:33:28. > :33:40.You've got to be kidding me! What a shot from Belinda Bencic! Well, this
:33:41. > :33:46.is incredible. Her end range control is just really just amazing. Look at
:33:47. > :34:11.that. Sometimes you just have to stand and applaud, don't you?
:34:12. > :34:28.That's the second one for Pironkova. Is it for Bencic -- Zip for Bencic:
:34:29. > :34:31.none for her. It's just pressure, building up on her. Serve has been
:34:32. > :34:41.fairly consistent. She it now. -- her serve has been fairly
:34:42. > :34:47.consistent. She needs it now. Oh dear.
:34:48. > :34:57.Well, I think we're just seeing an example of the new generation of
:34:58. > :35:02.players. This is the mentality and this is the mindset that the players
:35:03. > :35:09.like Garbine Muguruza and Belinda Bencic, this is what is going to win
:35:10. > :35:15.them Wimbledon one day. Muguruza is already getting very close last
:35:16. > :35:22.year. Last year when Muguruza played Angelique Kerber, she attempted to
:35:23. > :35:28.come in 75 times, something around that number. She executed something
:35:29. > :35:32.like 50 times. That is where she has got the added advantage. The
:35:33. > :35:38.willingness to move forwards. She's come into the net 20 times today in
:35:39. > :35:44.this match and executed 13. If she's willing to do that more and more,
:35:45. > :35:53.that's where I think the new trend of Wimbledon player has two B. A big
:35:54. > :35:56.summer awaits her. If all goes to plan, she will be heading off to
:35:57. > :36:05.Rio. I think Stan Wawrinka is in line to
:36:06. > :36:09.partner her in the Mixed Doubles. That's quite a combination. Here she
:36:10. > :36:33.is, 5-2, serving for the match. You can't blame her for looking for
:36:34. > :37:09.that drop shot. She can't beat her in any other avenue.
:37:10. > :37:27.Oh yes! Pironkova is not done yet. Fantastic fighting spirit. Well, she
:37:28. > :37:32.did everything right in this rally apart from smashing through the
:37:33. > :37:34.middle of the court. She just sort of went to one of the open sides and
:37:35. > :38:48.paid the price. That is what Pironkova will be
:38:49. > :38:55.hoping, that perhaps Bencic might just tighten up a fraction here.
:38:56. > :39:06.Wow. Brilliant first serve, sent straight down the T. Band match
:39:07. > :39:12.point to boot. -- and match point. Oh! It was written, wasn't it? And
:39:13. > :39:58.that just didn't follow the script. She just does that pattern so well,
:39:59. > :40:07.Belinda Bencic. Serving wide to the forehand, getting that big space to
:40:08. > :40:10.hit into. Second attempt, to round up the match.
:40:11. > :40:27.Whoa! Hello, where have you gone? That first serve was only 95 mph.
:40:28. > :40:45.Again, that pattern, serve wide, open the court into the backhand.
:40:46. > :40:58.All day Bencic has done that. Is it a case of third time lucky?
:40:59. > :41:16.You can forgive her for feeling the tension here. Desperate to put this
:41:17. > :41:33.one away, get her Wimbledon campaign off to a flying start.
:41:34. > :41:40.That's about the first time I haven't seen Belinda really use her
:41:41. > :41:47.feet well there, just a little sluggish. She didn't take those
:41:48. > :41:51.extra little steps. Again, this is where Pironkova, if she can just
:41:52. > :41:53.stay there mentally, she is just feeling the tension on the racket of
:41:54. > :42:23.Bencic. What has she got left? Wow. That's more like it from
:42:24. > :42:29.Bencic. Must have been just a momentary blip! 'S brave playing,
:42:30. > :42:53.it's such self belief that Belinda Bencic is playing with.
:42:54. > :43:00.That was brave, equally brave from a wrong cover.
:43:01. > :43:07.-- from Pironkova. Massive from baseline to baseline. You could read
:43:08. > :43:12.the writing on the wall, couldn't you? So flat. Just so much spin on
:43:13. > :43:30.that. She's made it! And listen to the
:43:31. > :43:37.crowd! They want more. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:43:38. > :43:48.Can she find a way? Will Bencic let her?
:43:49. > :44:01.Change of racket, perhaps. That might be the answer. Well, its new
:44:02. > :44:02.balls for Peron -- Pironkova. She will have to be very happy with
:44:03. > :44:51.that, Pironkova. And that first mistake on the first
:44:52. > :44:57.opening shot of this game is now proving costly. It is a good return.
:44:58. > :44:59.She can just get the end of the racket under the ball, a slice
:45:00. > :45:21.return. I have seen that a couple of times
:45:22. > :46:31.in the last two games. She didn't hit that shot with any
:46:32. > :47:43.conviction. A consummate professional,
:47:44. > :47:53.exceptional performance from Belinda Bencic. She set out her stall early
:47:54. > :47:59.and she never let it slip. Could she be the one to spring a few surprises
:48:00. > :48:04.over the coming fortnight? Look at that smile. She is so comfortable
:48:05. > :48:08.out here today. It was an exceptional performance. She did not
:48:09. > :48:13.put a foot wrong throughout the whole match. Just little hiccup when
:48:14. > :48:18.she was serving for the match, but her ability to turn that background,
:48:19. > :48:26.come back and play an aggressive returning game, I really thought on
:48:27. > :48:30.Cavell would hold serve there. But what a performance from Bencic.
:48:31. > :48:34.There is the announcement that there will be another match and the crowd
:48:35. > :48:43.are loving that. They are so excited. They will get more tennis.
:48:44. > :48:49.-- I really thought Pironkova would hold serve. Belinda Bencic was so
:48:50. > :48:53.comfortable. I am very impressed. I think 2016 here at Wimbledon could
:48:54. > :48:59.be a little surprise for this lady. She will go into the second round
:49:00. > :49:04.where she will play an American qualifier. If she keeps on playing
:49:05. > :49:13.like that, a semifinal against Serena Williams could well be in
:49:14. > :49:20.store. The Centre Court crowd are pretty ecstatic. They are getting
:49:21. > :49:29.another match. Belinda Bencic's days finished and she can afford a little
:49:30. > :49:33.jig to finish. People on the phone saying, do you know what, you know I
:49:34. > :49:41.said I would be home at 8:30pm, I think I will stay for a little more.
:49:42. > :49:45.Let's hear from our winner, Belinda Bencic, eight consummate
:49:46. > :49:52.professional through in easy style. Here she is with Gary Richardson.
:49:53. > :49:59.Many congratulations. What a thrill for you on Centre Court. A dream
:50:00. > :50:05.came true. It was my dream to play on Centre Court and to win. That I
:50:06. > :50:12.could play today meant so much to me. The lovely thing for you, during
:50:13. > :50:15.the Roger Federer match which happened earlier, they took you out
:50:16. > :50:20.there to show you what it is like. There was a huge cheer and you went,
:50:21. > :50:26.oh my goodness, this is so exciting! Tell me about that moment. The
:50:27. > :50:30.supervisor told me I am going to play on Centre Court and she took me
:50:31. > :50:35.down to see the atmosphere. Roger won the point and it was really good
:50:36. > :50:40.response. I was really happy. Sorry for the opponent but I was really
:50:41. > :50:47.happy that Roger could play in three sets. For you today, what a
:50:48. > :50:52.fantastic win. With such a range of shots, you have played so well. I
:50:53. > :50:57.was totally focused. I cannot explain why I have played so good
:50:58. > :51:02.but I feel that this will be my court hopefully soon and I felt so
:51:03. > :51:06.comfortable. Very well done, great match, thank you. Thank you very
:51:07. > :51:11.much. SUE BARKER: It really was a very
:51:12. > :51:16.good match. She enjoyed herself on Centre Court. I think we will see
:51:17. > :51:20.how many more times out there. She is certainly one who could go deep
:51:21. > :51:26.into the tournament, not just this year but for many years to come.
:51:27. > :51:30.Belinda Bencic, putting out a very difficult opponent today, Pironkova.
:51:31. > :51:38.She goes through and it is great having someone like Martina Hingis
:51:39. > :51:46.in your corner as well. Well, they have put another match on. You will
:51:47. > :51:55.be able to see it on the red button because they will not be on for ten
:51:56. > :52:07.minutes and we will be off air at 830 PM when it will be Today at
:52:08. > :52:13.Wimbledon with Clare Balding, John McEnroe and Lindsay Davenport. There
:52:14. > :52:20.was a frustrating day with the rain. They will be following the fortunes
:52:21. > :52:24.of Heather Watson, Johanna Konta and Marcus Willis. We have heard
:52:25. > :52:31.tomorrow they will be starting play earlier at 11am because there are
:52:32. > :52:38.still 15 first matches to be completed. There is a lot of
:52:39. > :52:47.catching up to do. We are on the air at 11:30am but if you want a junior
:52:48. > :52:52.in at 11 o'clock you can on line and on the red button. There is also
:52:53. > :52:59.commentary on the radio. This is the scene here. It is typical. They have
:53:00. > :53:05.got the covers on but it is not raining. I cannot believe they are
:53:06. > :53:11.watering the courts! Anyway, we are going to take you to a match which
:53:12. > :53:16.started out on Court Number Two earlier today. It features Dan
:53:17. > :53:21.Evans, here's the big friend of Marcus Willis. He is up against
:53:22. > :53:25.Alexander Dolgopolov and he is leading 4-3. It is going on serve.
:53:26. > :54:20.Our commentators are Jamie Baker and Barry Davies.
:54:21. > :55:01.JAMIE BAKER: A great example of the new balls there.
:55:02. > :55:06.BARRY DAVIES: Jeff! CHEERING
:55:07. > :56:04.For get the Gasquets and Wawrinkas of the world. Look at that.
:56:05. > :57:43.That gives some tale of his confidence.
:57:44. > :58:25.Came in very quickly then after his serve.
:58:26. > :59:56.Dolgopolov was already walking up court to take his seat! He just knew
:59:57. > :00:03.there was no way he would get the ball back, but he might have caught
:00:04. > :00:12.the eye of his opponent. Slightly more difficult game that one. Yes,
:00:13. > :00:19.it was. He is in trouble at 15-30. Although the wind unquestionable got
:00:20. > :00:27.up, that serve was on the last point when he walked into the net, but the
:00:28. > :00:33.point I was trying to make at 15-30 was Evans with a slower first serve,
:00:34. > :00:35.98 mph, which shows how clearly he is thinking Dolgopolov is using his
:00:36. > :01:40.pace of the first serve. Beautiful understanding from
:01:41. > :01:41.Dolgopolov. Just knowing in these conditions that short ball is going
:01:42. > :03:04.to die. No threat to the Ukrainian. Very
:03:05. > :03:16.quick service action when he wants to get an extra bit of power.
:03:17. > :03:23.There is every chance the conditions are getting worse. The wind
:03:24. > :03:36.presumably would help to drive the court? It seems there are spots of
:03:37. > :03:47.rain falling constantly. It is not moving the weather vane very much.
:03:48. > :04:13.He is a good umpire, Bernardes. He understands the problem. There is
:04:14. > :04:15.no, I am telling you to play on. He knows it is a difficult test for the
:04:16. > :04:41.players. He made that look ridiculously
:04:42. > :04:45.simple! Really very well played. Difficult to make the case it is
:04:46. > :04:48.slippery when you can control as well as that. This is a stunning
:04:49. > :06:28.touch from Evans. I know he missed this volley but it
:06:29. > :06:31.is really sharp movement from Evans, seeing Dolgopolov is opening his
:06:32. > :07:19.face, it is definitely the right tactics for Evans.
:07:20. > :07:31.Mark Hilton in the front row. The coach of Dan Evans. Yes, somebody
:07:32. > :07:35.who has helped Dan at various points in his career. Next to him, Nathan
:07:36. > :08:38.Rooney in the red. This is the option Evans has. He has
:08:39. > :08:39.the ability to play such direct tennis and there is not a lot
:08:40. > :09:21.Dolgopolov can do. Lucky at the end. A rally of some
:09:22. > :09:32.quality that. Some fish are slicing from both
:09:33. > :10:14.players. -- vicious. He has put it out. What a chance for
:10:15. > :11:20.Dan Evans. They are still not happy, Dolgopolov
:11:21. > :11:25.in particular. SUE BARKER: The umpire got involved
:11:26. > :11:30.and the supervisor got involved, but they asked them to play an even
:11:31. > :11:35.though the rain was falling. One more point was played. The set is
:11:36. > :11:40.tied at six games all. That is when they decided there would be no play.
:11:41. > :11:48.Six games all. When they come back tomorrow they will be at the start
:11:49. > :11:54.of the tie-break. Just 46 minutes played before the rain came down.
:11:55. > :11:59.That was earlier today, but there are still play going under way. You
:12:00. > :12:05.can see the lights on under Centre Court. Eugenie Bouchard is up
:12:06. > :12:21.against Magdalena Rabada Cove. Time for me to say goodbye. Today at
:12:22. > :12:28.Wimbledon is next and Clare will be here. So much to look back on with
:12:29. > :12:33.Marcus Willis and Johanna Konta. Lindsay Davenport and John McEnroe
:12:34. > :12:38.will be with Clare for that. Play gets underway tomorrow at 11 o'clock
:12:39. > :12:43.so you can follow it on the red button and you can also follow it on
:12:44. > :12:48.connected TV, on the app and online. All of that tomorrow. We are told
:12:49. > :12:52.the weather will be a lot better. We will be on the air from 11:30am on
:12:53. > :13:04.BBC Two. For now, from me, good night.
:13:05. > :13:14.On the 30th of June, we'll be coming together
:13:15. > :13:18.to commemorate the centenery of the Battle of the Somme.
