:05:02. > :05:06.first quarterfinal in six years? And Sam Querrey has already toppled the
:05:07. > :05:11.top seed, next in the firing line is grass court specialist Nicholas
:05:12. > :05:16.Mahut. Where will we see all the stars? First up, Federer is taking
:05:17. > :05:19.on Johnson and we will join that in a moment. Then, the world another
:05:20. > :05:24.one Serena Williams against Kuznetsova and Murray against Kerry
:05:25. > :05:29.is. That is the one we are looking forward to. On Court One, Simona
:05:30. > :05:30.Halep has started her marriage. Venus Williams up against Carla

:05:44. > :05:48.problems with injury. We will update you in a moment, David Goffin takes
:05:49. > :05:49.on the big serving me lost Raonic, the little and large match on Court
:05:50. > :05:59.Number Two. Sam Querrey, the man who put out
:06:00. > :06:04.Novak Djokovic, taking on Nicholas Mahut. We were greeted by gorgeous
:06:05. > :06:08.sunshine today, now some clouds have come over and I hope there isn't
:06:09. > :06:15.rain on the way. Let's find out from Carol. Sue, the forecast was
:06:16. > :06:19.gorgeous for the start of the day, some clouds upon us, we will see a
:06:20. > :06:25.shower but we will be very lucky if we do. Through the afternoon, we
:06:26. > :06:29.will see holes in the cloud developing, some sunny spells,
:06:30. > :06:32.feeling quite humid. Temperatures getting up to 19 Celsius. If we see
:06:33. > :06:39.breaks in the cloud, it could hit 22. Even into the evening it should
:06:40. > :06:45.stay dry. Still with a fair bit of cloud. Tomorrow we start on a cloudy
:06:46. > :06:49.note with light rain but that will clear rapidly during the course of
:06:50. > :06:54.the morning, allowing it to develop into another beautiful day. With
:06:55. > :07:00.some sunny spells, temperatures reaching 22 Celsius but feeling
:07:01. > :07:04.fresher than today. As we head into Wednesday, a little nod heel of
:07:05. > :07:09.high-pressure building and that will settle things down. Wednesday, going
:07:10. > :07:13.to be another beautiful day, try, Thursday we are expecting a little
:07:14. > :07:18.bit more clout with risks of showers but it is a risk at this stage. All
:07:19. > :07:26.in all looking a bit liqueur self... Gorgeous! LAUGHTER is that because I
:07:27. > :07:31.was a little cheeky to you on Saturday? We will not talk about
:07:32. > :07:37.that! LAUGHTER you have proper sunshine so you can stay, Carol.
:07:38. > :07:39.Well done. See you tomorrow! Before we move on with life tennis let's
:07:40. > :07:46.tell you about some results coming in.
:07:47. > :08:00.Coco Vandeweghe is out, beaten by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 21st
:08:01. > :08:04.seed at the tournament. She is through, 6-3, 6-3 on face either
:08:05. > :08:17.Svetlana Kuznetsova Serena Williams. Also safely through, the Australian
:08:18. > :08:21.Open champion. Angelique Kerber, through 6-3, 6-1, they played in the
:08:22. > :08:26.first round of the Australian Open and Misaki Doi had match point
:08:27. > :08:30.against but Angelique Kerber went on to take the match on the title,
:08:31. > :08:35.didn't need three sets today. She is the highest ranked player left in
:08:36. > :08:38.the bottom half of the draw. If she continues to pull off shots like
:08:39. > :08:47.that, she will go a long way in this tournament. So, this first set, a
:08:48. > :08:54.real roller-coaster ride. Here is Madison Keys. 5-3 up in the
:08:55. > :08:59.tie-break, the first set, that much will be shown assuredly on BBC Two,
:09:00. > :09:03.Madison Keys having broken into the world's top ten, she must have
:09:04. > :09:07.missed that. They have changed it again on me, it is 6-3. Three set
:09:08. > :09:17.points for Madison Keys, the number nine seed. And this match. A
:09:18. > :09:24.roller-coaster. Dominika Cibulkova has another break in the third set
:09:25. > :09:28.against Aga Radwanska, former finalist. Cibulkova one Eastbourne,
:09:29. > :09:35.in control at the moment in the third set. That much is on the red
:09:36. > :09:43.button. And the man who put out Novak Djokovic. He is slamming down
:09:44. > :09:49.the aces again, 6-4, 2-1 up on Nicholas Mahut of France. That match
:09:50. > :09:54.on the website. Now I mentioned Kei Nishikori was in trouble with an
:09:55. > :09:59.injury, had to pull out with a rib injury and in all sorts of problems,
:10:00. > :10:04.16 minutes, the first set took and he only wants seven points in that,
:10:05. > :10:07.going the way of Marin Cilic at the moment, worrying times per Kei
:10:08. > :10:13.Nishikori and his fans, we will keep you updated with his progress. A lot
:10:14. > :10:18.to go on today and we will keep you updated but we are going to Roger
:10:19. > :10:22.Federer on Centre Court. Up against the big hitting Steve Johnson, all
:10:23. > :10:28.going the way of Federer at the moment, 6-2, 4-1, let's join Tim
:10:29. > :10:37.Henman, Nick Mullins and Jim Courier, commentators.
:10:38. > :10:43.COMMENTATOR: Federer largely in cruise control. Steve Johnson still
:10:44. > :10:46.swinging away. Let's see what he can connect with. Federer with the
:10:47. > :12:21.break. Federer continuing his form of the
:12:22. > :12:26.opening week, the start of the second week, against the 26 euros
:12:27. > :12:31.Californian, Steve Johnson, a hugely popular man on the tour. Jim, you
:12:32. > :12:36.know him very well, Davis Cup captain, not eight mega John, a
:12:37. > :12:42.smile never far away, a laugh and a joke. He was very happy to see Roger
:12:43. > :12:47.Federer being trawled through a million media commitments yesterday,
:12:48. > :12:52.he said to the guy on the ATP, he said you make sure you keep him out
:12:53. > :13:05.for 3-4 hours longer. It takes a lot more to keep Roger Federer busy. A
:13:06. > :13:12.full four years at university. Coming on to at 22 years of age. On
:13:13. > :13:22.an upper trajectory ever since. Continues to plot. This experience
:13:23. > :13:30.is climbing right now at the moment. Not really shaping on the
:13:31. > :13:34.scoreboard. But this experience will prove to be invaluable. It tennis
:13:35. > :13:41.career which began when he was two years old, we are told by his mum
:13:42. > :13:47.and dad, playing with balloons and beach balls. And here he hears, --
:13:48. > :13:52.here he is, using proper tennis balls.
:13:53. > :14:03.His dad is a tennis teacher. Taught my wife and my brother-in-law. When
:14:04. > :14:11.he was a toddler, they were about ten or 12 years old. But his mum is
:14:12. > :14:13.a maths teacher and I tell you, Steve spent a lot more time with his
:14:14. > :14:36.dad! He won his last 72 matches at
:14:37. > :14:41.college. Unprecedented. One the team come petition of four years he was
:14:42. > :14:47.at school. One individual championships the two years. He
:14:48. > :14:51.would be the most decorated college tennis player in the history of
:14:52. > :15:01.men's college tennis in the United States.
:15:02. > :15:10.When you mention that to Johnny Mac... He will say, I turned pro...
:15:11. > :15:16.But... The record is his, there is his coach on the left, Peter Smith
:15:17. > :15:37.and Craig Boyden, his coach on the tour. Next to him.
:15:38. > :15:43.Certainly when you play that many matches at whatever level, you know
:15:44. > :15:47.how to compete and he has done a good job, Federer making life
:15:48. > :15:53.difficult for him, few opportunities but he is sticking in there.
:15:54. > :16:05.Trying to make Federer serve out this second set.
:16:06. > :16:17.And it looks like he is going to have to.
:16:18. > :16:30.Johnson already guaranteed his highest ever payday. ?132,000 for
:16:31. > :17:27.getting this far. $135,000? Federer for the set...
:17:28. > :17:36.Johnson would definitely like that or hand pass back. Federer decided
:17:37. > :17:38.to go into the forehand but mis-hit the approach shot, had plenty of
:17:39. > :18:02.time. Looked like the point had to be
:18:03. > :18:14.Federer's at in the end, was the American's. The backhand slice down
:18:15. > :18:27.the line, the passing shot. 73. You don't see that too much!
:18:28. > :18:41.Ken Rosewall was 30 71 he won the Australian Open in 1972. And he is
:18:42. > :18:49.bang on course for a place in the mumbled and quarterfinals. Leading
:18:50. > :18:53.by 2-0 sets. -- the Wimbledon. SUE BARKER: Federer in a hurry on
:18:54. > :18:57.Centre Court, his best performance of the tournament so far, we will be
:18:58. > :19:02.back on Centre Court in a moment. Michael Chang... They are talking to
:19:03. > :19:07.Kei Nishikori on court, trying to persuade him to pull out of the
:19:08. > :19:12.match, he is injured, we think it's a recurring of the rib injury that
:19:13. > :19:17.took him out of the previous tournament, his team saying do not
:19:18. > :19:21.go on. No player likes to retire, he wanted to try and find a way back
:19:22. > :19:25.but it was not to be, struggling to win points, what a sad end for the
:19:26. > :19:29.second year in a row for Kei Nishikori. Pulling out of Wimbledon
:19:30. > :19:34.because of injury. It means that Marin Cilic will go through. He will
:19:35. > :19:39.face either Steve Johnson Roger Federer, looking likely to be
:19:40. > :19:45.Federer. Sad end for Nishikori out on Court Number Two. In action at
:19:46. > :19:50.the moment... Madison Keys, a break of serve down in the first set, came
:19:51. > :19:53.back and won the first set tie-break, a break of serve up in
:19:54. > :20:02.the second set, the American going well, that match is on BBC Two. And
:20:03. > :20:07.over on Court Number Three... This match. We thought this was going to
:20:08. > :20:12.be tough and discovering the distance with Dominika Cibulkova who
:20:13. > :20:17.won at Eastbourne. Against Aga Radwanska in your picture. Could be
:20:18. > :20:20.5-5 and you can see that on the red button. We will keep you up-to-date
:20:21. > :20:35.with those matters but we are heading back to Roger.
:20:36. > :20:44.COMMENTATOR: Curnow, Steve Johnson? This is a day he will remember for
:20:45. > :20:45.ever. His time on Centre Court pending on what happens over the
:20:46. > :21:03.next half an hour. If you are going to try and build a
:21:04. > :21:07.game plan, this is the first set he has served first in, you would like
:21:08. > :21:13.to think if he can hold the first couple of games, he can get his nose
:21:14. > :21:20.in front. But... Federer will have other ideas, with the moment up, 2-0
:21:21. > :21:22.sets, he is looking to be ultra-aggressive, try and get an
:21:23. > :22:17.early break in this third set and wrapped things up.
:22:18. > :22:22.One man that hasn't been talked lot about that I have heard far in the
:22:23. > :22:29.Championships is either in the church. He is in the Federer camp.
:22:30. > :22:33.We talked a lot about Edberg last year. Ljubicic was with me los
:22:34. > :22:38.Raonic and he left to go with Federer.
:22:39. > :22:47.He did a great job with me los Raonic. Changed his serve, there he
:22:48. > :22:56.is, in the middle. Added a couple of inches in contact point to me los
:22:57. > :23:03.Raonic's already told serve, using his legs more. That is a rear change
:23:04. > :23:08.for a coach to try and make to a player who already has a great
:23:09. > :23:11.serve. Ljubicic is a confident coach and he hasn't had a lot of
:23:12. > :23:16.opportunity with Roger Federer yet because they haven't played that
:23:17. > :23:17.much. I am curious to see over time what he may bring to the Federer
:23:18. > :23:58.camp. Under so much pressure to try the
:23:59. > :24:03.extraordinary. Someone like Roger Federer. Break point right at the
:24:04. > :24:51.start of this third set. We talked about how important it was
:24:52. > :24:54.for both of these players to get forehands in the first job after
:24:55. > :25:00.adverse serve and they have both got about three quarters.
:25:01. > :25:18.The problem for Johnson is that Federer is pushing him back a lot of
:25:19. > :25:23.times on the return of serve, he is not getting an aggressive first ball
:25:24. > :25:33.forehand that he wants. The problem, Federer, he is pretty good! LAUGHTER
:25:34. > :25:36.yes... And also, grouse, without doubt, is the toughest surface to
:25:37. > :25:40.defend on soap when you have someone who is as aggressive Federer... It
:25:41. > :25:44.is difficult to get the balance right because you feel you need to
:25:45. > :26:03.take more risks, be more aggressive and you make more unforced errors.
:26:04. > :26:12.We mentioned Ken Rosewall, at the end of the second set, 37 when he
:26:13. > :26:15.won the Australian Open in 72, if Federer goes on to win this on
:26:16. > :26:27.Sunday he will become the oldest men's champion here in the Open era.
:26:28. > :26:36.The second slice Arcand passing shot... -- backhand. A couple
:26:37. > :26:55.leaking out! All we need our wooden rackets,
:26:56. > :27:05.white balls, no sitting down and we would be right back in the early
:27:06. > :27:08.70s! Federer's trawl is riddled with challenges in front of him. It is no
:27:09. > :27:23.easy one. Cilic is through. That is who awaits
:27:24. > :27:28.the winner of this one. Kei Nishikori retiring. Having lost the
:27:29. > :27:51.first set 6-1. Tim, who do you think Roger will
:27:52. > :27:54.fear most in the draw? I think that would be Andy Murray if he got
:27:55. > :27:58.through to the final but I agree with you, in the top half of the
:27:59. > :28:03.draw, Raonic has been playing well but I think Cilic is a dangerous
:28:04. > :28:08.floater. They played for an Cilic one in New York.
:28:09. > :28:13.And he played fantastically well against Federer and I think the way
:28:14. > :28:23.he serves, aggressive from the baseline...
:28:24. > :28:28.If and when Federer comes through this match. I think that is going to
:28:29. > :28:59.be a tough challenge. No question that Andy Murray is the
:29:00. > :29:03.best tennis player left in the draw up the sides Roger Federer, no doubt
:29:04. > :29:07.about that. But Federer being able to play Roger Federer at tennis if
:29:08. > :29:14.he were to play Murray in the final...
:29:15. > :29:23.That doesn't mean it is easy by any means, very challenging for Federer.
:29:24. > :29:28.He can get the racket taken out of his hands by Marin Cilic and me los
:29:29. > :29:32.Raonic. If I am in Federer's camp those are the players I would be
:29:33. > :29:39.buried about most because he will have a chance, a sake, if he plays
:29:40. > :29:42.Andy Murray. Those guys, Cilic and Raonic can beat themselves but they
:29:43. > :29:54.can prevent Roger from doing what he wants to do and beaten. Dangerous.
:29:55. > :30:00.Roger played one of the best matches I think I've seen him play at
:30:01. > :30:02.Wimbledon in the semis last year when he beat Murray and he could
:30:03. > :30:37.probably take some confidence from that.
:30:38. > :30:52.Johnson holds on. Still on serve in this third set.
:30:53. > :31:00.Martina Navratilova is turning 60 this year. She is an inspiration and
:31:01. > :31:07.if I was an inspiration to her, she has been one to me. Defecting to
:31:08. > :31:12.America she transformed the spot. Everyone has a lucky break in life,
:31:13. > :31:19.she was my lucky break. She will be the best doubles and singles players
:31:20. > :31:24.to have ever lived. She is so wonderfully joyous when she wins. A
:31:25. > :31:50.pioneer, an activist, an icon. He is still out there giving it all
:31:51. > :31:55.he possibly can on Independence Day. Happy Independence Day, Jim, the 4th
:31:56. > :32:00.of July. Jack Nicholas on the left-hand side and Sir Steve
:32:01. > :32:15.Redgrave on the right. Jack Nicholas has got 18 majors. And nice segue to
:32:16. > :32:23.the piece on Martino who has got 18 majors herself.
:32:24. > :32:28.We have no time for this right now, but perhaps in the pub later, who
:32:29. > :33:08.was the greatest in their sport? But, yes, a rare two-handed backhand
:33:09. > :33:14.winner. Beautifully played across court. It was an ice lolly as well
:33:15. > :33:18.moving away from him. He catches the outside of the ball with the
:33:19. > :33:26.left-hand and it is 15-30. Well, well, well. Straightening our
:33:27. > :34:00.backs again, setting up again. It is a question of tipping your cap
:34:01. > :34:04.and saying, too good. A great return from Johnson, but Federer was able
:34:05. > :34:16.to direct the forehand down the line.
:34:17. > :35:25.Just that early backhand passing shot changed that service game. He
:35:26. > :35:29.took his opportunity. In the context of this match it is his first
:35:30. > :35:33.experience on Centre Court after an hour and ten minutes and he was
:35:34. > :36:36.thinking, I fancy staying out here a bit longer!
:36:37. > :36:44.Such a good effort to get the break of serve, now the key is to keep a
:36:45. > :37:08.hold of it and stamp his authority on this third set.
:37:09. > :37:13.You can hear Johnson muttering to himself about making first serves,
:37:14. > :37:20.which he has not been able to do much of in this game.
:37:21. > :37:42.Well, you tweak the tale of a tiger and you expect some kind of
:37:43. > :37:48.response, but sadly for Steve Johnson, that was handing it back a
:37:49. > :37:52.bit tamely. Federer was able to absorb some of the forehand pace in
:37:53. > :37:56.the middle of that game and that was indecision from Johnson. When he was
:37:57. > :38:02.wondering whether that return was going to go out, he decided to swing
:38:03. > :38:08.at a last minute. Let's see if he can regroup, or he will be
:38:09. > :38:14.disappointed. Sam Querrey is flying the stars and stripes for the United
:38:15. > :38:21.States today. It has been five years since we had an interest from
:38:22. > :38:26.America on the Centre Court. It has been five years since they have had
:38:27. > :38:46.a quarterfinalist anywhere. Mardy Fish. He does spend time with
:38:47. > :39:27.these guys. He is as interested as ever in the sport.
:39:28. > :40:04.UMPIRE: Mr Johnson is challenging the call. The call was called in. Mr
:40:05. > :40:58.Johnson has two challengers left. The wrist of work, Tim, to create
:40:59. > :41:04.that angle. That is right, Federer has got unbelievable racket head
:41:05. > :41:08.speed and a loose wrist to create spin on the ball and give himself
:41:09. > :41:46.margin for error and generate the power.
:41:47. > :41:58.Dustin Johnson ploughing new ground here, never been this far in a Grand
:41:59. > :42:00.Slam. Don't let him plough on too much or Tim Henman will get on at
:42:01. > :42:31.him. Johnson falls, but he wins the
:42:32. > :42:49.point, almost as if Federer was distracted by his slip. It would be
:42:50. > :42:54.interesting to see what part it was. It is pretty unusual because these
:42:55. > :43:01.courts are unbelievably hard. You can dig them up with your feet. When
:43:02. > :43:05.you start digging them up with your racket it gets expensive. That is
:43:06. > :43:14.not going to cost him any money, you can confirm that. He knows how to
:43:15. > :43:16.repair a different because he picked up a bit of turf and stamped it
:43:17. > :43:55.down. That is what happens when you hit a
:43:56. > :44:00.lot of your best service and best approach shots and the ball keeps
:44:01. > :44:02.coming back with interest and you end up making the wrong decision. A
:44:03. > :44:25.poor choice of shot. There is somebody who knows about
:44:26. > :45:27.repairing divots. Danny will it in his Masters jacket.
:45:28. > :45:34.It has been the year of the underdog. But it is a long way back
:45:35. > :46:12.for Steve Johnson. He has played that well. He is
:46:13. > :46:50.refusing to let this moment ago. Steve Johnson when he was in college
:46:51. > :46:57.at Los Angeles he would drive down to account about an hour south of
:46:58. > :47:05.Los Angeles. He would work with a guy named Rodney Marshall, the
:47:06. > :47:16.strength and conditioning coach. We told you how great his record was in
:47:17. > :47:21.college. But he had 18% body fat when they got hold of him. He cut
:47:22. > :47:26.that down to 9% and he has done better than that. He has got himself
:47:27. > :47:33.into top-flight, professional shape. He has to be in better shape than
:47:34. > :47:37.players because he has to hit forehands and avoid the backhand
:47:38. > :47:42.because he needs to cover more court. He cannot stand in the middle
:47:43. > :49:14.and hit beautiful one hand is like Roger Federer.
:49:15. > :49:36.UMPIRE: New balls, please. New balls prompt a change of racket from
:49:37. > :49:42.Federer. Closing in on $100 million in prize money. Djokovic was the
:49:43. > :49:48.first to go through that barrier in Paris. But if he is going to do that
:49:49. > :50:13.here in London, he needs to win on Sunday.
:50:14. > :50:24.And his wife has to worry about paying the mortgage!
:50:25. > :50:29.He set himself up nicely. A wonderful foundation to hit that
:50:30. > :51:25.shot. Despite that double fault, Johnson
:51:26. > :51:49.is having a pretty good set here as far as serving those.
:51:50. > :51:58.Absolutely right, Tim. He is relishing this opportunity on Centre
:51:59. > :52:04.Court. It is brand-new for him. Do you remember your first trip out
:52:05. > :52:10.here? That last in the memory? Yes, 96 in the first round. I first came
:52:11. > :52:17.here when I was a six-year-old with my mum, so I have about 12 years
:52:18. > :52:29.getting myself ready and by the time I came out I save a couple of match
:52:30. > :52:34.point and I was ready for it. Two sets up and it was just before
:52:35. > :52:46.tea-time and the viewers kept coming in. Good work. Jim? 1991I was about
:52:47. > :52:52.the same age and I played in the quarterfinals against Michael Stich.
:52:53. > :53:00.Sad to say I did not extend my time on the court very long. He took me
:53:01. > :53:06.to the Wood she had very quickly, the German. That is what Steve
:53:07. > :53:24.Johnson is building right now, memories.
:53:25. > :53:55.With the scoreboard now, this is a free swing for Johnson.
:53:56. > :54:07.I return in the goodness category. Aggressive.
:54:08. > :54:23.I wonder whether Federer has a sense of what we are being told, that rain
:54:24. > :54:29.might be on the way. He absolutely wants to get this done without any
:54:30. > :54:31.interruption. We were warned that there would be showers at various
:54:32. > :55:05.points this afternoon. It is one thing to get there, but
:55:06. > :55:08.then to be able to control the ball at the end of your run and nudge it
:55:09. > :55:28.down the line. UMPIRE: Mr Federer is challenging
:55:29. > :55:40.the ball on the left-hand side. It was called out. I am a good fan of
:55:41. > :55:54.Hawk-Eye. Mr Federer has two challengers remaining.
:55:55. > :56:04.UMPIRE: Correction, the ball was good. Overruled by the chair. Or he
:56:05. > :56:16.had to do was put his racket up and block it into the open space.
:56:17. > :56:27.Mr Johnson has one challenge remaining.
:56:28. > :56:34.That is interesting. I do not know if interesting is the right word. I
:56:35. > :57:01.think horrible is the last 45 seconds.
:57:02. > :57:08.It has just unravelled rather horribly for Steve Johnson. Federer
:57:09. > :57:18.has the break and he is one game away from taking his place in the
:57:19. > :57:23.quarterfinals. We always know it is small margins and things can change
:57:24. > :57:29.very quickly. But as Jim said, at 15-15 when he came to the net, even
:57:30. > :57:35.if the ball was going out by a foot or two feet, he had the whole court
:57:36. > :57:43.to nudge the volley into the open court, no drama. Instead of being up
:57:44. > :57:48.30-15, he is under pressure and he had a good return and he tried to
:57:49. > :57:52.play it in between his legs and Federer is in the driving seat to
:57:53. > :57:56.finish this one off. Steve Johnson is not the one who looks to play
:57:57. > :58:01.that kind of shot. He was desperate to get a forehand on that sharp and
:58:02. > :58:06.he could not get there on time, so we had no choice but to hit the shot
:58:07. > :58:19.or to watch the ball go by him. It has taken him just over an hour
:58:20. > :59:34.and a half. Once again the spin and the angle,
:59:35. > :59:39.the ambition and the execution. Federer speaks about four
:59:40. > :59:48.languages and Johnson speaks American English pretty well. There
:59:49. > :59:52.are games are a bit like that as well, the amount of dexterity that
:59:53. > :00:00.Federer has compared to Steve. It is a mismatch.
:00:01. > :00:09.Federer is on the verge of another tennis milestone. 306 singles wins
:00:10. > :00:10.at a Grand Slam will put him alongside Martina Navratilova's
:00:11. > :00:47.record. When we talk about the very best...
:00:48. > :00:54.He will take his place in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. 17 Grand
:00:55. > :00:57.Slams, yet to add to his tally this year but maybe here. Maybe here. He
:00:58. > :01:09.was good today. Still a great tournament for Steve
:01:10. > :01:14.Johnson, making the second week of a major for the first time.
:01:15. > :01:19.Competitive. Third set. Great learning experience for him. Chance
:01:20. > :01:21.to play with a great man on a great court.
:01:22. > :01:26.CHEERING APPLAUSE
:01:27. > :01:34.Wonderful moment for the American, 26-year-old Californian.
:01:35. > :01:47.As Jim said, up against a man fluent in more than one language. As fluent
:01:48. > :01:53.as anyone in the language of tennis. He will play Marin Cilic, ninth
:01:54. > :01:56.seed, in the quarterfinals. Cilic eating Kei Nishikori, Nishikori
:01:57. > :02:00.retiring in the second set out on Court number to an hour or so ago.
:02:01. > :02:09.Federer through in straight sets. And he is about to have a chat with
:02:10. > :02:12.us. Huge congratulations. You have done
:02:13. > :02:17.these interviews a thousand times, we tried to work out just how hard
:02:18. > :02:24.you win in straight sets victory cos it looks to us like you have done it
:02:25. > :02:27.easily. How was it? Best of five, always tough. It needs a lot of
:02:28. > :02:32.concentration because the finish line is bar, even if you might be
:02:33. > :02:36.close at the very end. The tennis scoring system, how it works, it can
:02:37. > :02:40.turn quickly and you might be running after the score because of
:02:41. > :02:45.the reset at the beginning of each set, but happy with how I played, I
:02:46. > :02:48.don't think it was as easy as it looked because Steve picked up some
:02:49. > :02:54.nice confidence over the last few weeks, you could see it, nice game
:02:55. > :02:57.for grouse, good serve, great slider, trying to come into the
:02:58. > :03:01.backhand side and make him play passing shots, mixed it up well
:03:02. > :03:06.today. Last year I remember you speaking about your style of play at
:03:07. > :03:11.Wimbledon allowing you to conserve energy. The fact you haven't dropped
:03:12. > :03:14.a set so far, you are in good shape? I would never have thought I would
:03:15. > :03:19.win the first four matches in straight sets, extremely pleased,
:03:20. > :03:23.the matches might be tough at the rest in between are great. We are
:03:24. > :03:28.used to playing sometimes five straight days and other ATP events,
:03:29. > :03:33.you have every second day a day off and for tennis players, or
:03:34. > :03:37.professional athletes, that is huge. You have been coming here since 1998
:03:38. > :03:43.as a professional, your 14th quarterfinal here, the bus and idea
:03:44. > :03:46.how much the intensity picks up from here? It's nice that I'd never
:03:47. > :03:51.missed Wimbledon since the juniors in 98, 99, I got a wildcard, I lost
:03:52. > :03:58.in the first round, five sets, Ford and experience. Look... I think, you
:03:59. > :04:01.can always lose the tournament in the first week but never win it, I
:04:02. > :04:04.did a lot of things right the first week and from now, you really have
:04:05. > :04:10.to start playing your best tennis. Cilic lies ahead, he rushed me off
:04:11. > :04:13.the court like I was not think that the US Open in the semis some years
:04:14. > :04:19.back, I hope to get him back this time, super guy, tough match, from
:04:20. > :04:22.here on, it's going to be difficult. Always a pleasure speaking to you.
:04:23. > :04:29.Thank you. You got it. Thank you, guys.
:04:30. > :04:32.SUE BARKER: what a win for Roger Federer, we thought this would be a
:04:33. > :04:36.tough test for him but like the champion he is, he gets better and
:04:37. > :04:40.better and he needed to be good today, to the delight of his family
:04:41. > :04:44.and friends on the Centre Court crowd. Such a popular player here
:04:45. > :04:46.and all around the world. He marches on through to another Wimbledon
:04:47. > :04:57.quarterfinal. And loving his time out on Centre
:04:58. > :05:02.Court once again. Let's get further reaction from our commentators. From
:05:03. > :05:07.Tim and Jim. Jim, that was pretty special, wasn't it? Certainly
:05:08. > :05:12.special for Steve Johnson but for Roger Federer, he was razor-sharp
:05:13. > :05:18.alp. Had a couple of Rippon chances that he said early in the first set
:05:19. > :05:22.and from there he really took off. Strong performance, feeling good, as
:05:23. > :05:26.he said in his interview. Fresh and ready for the battle ahead with
:05:27. > :05:30.Marin Cilic. We talk about that at the moment but when he was in here,
:05:31. > :05:35.he said I have to be good tomorrow because this guy is dangerous.
:05:36. > :05:39.Certainly is an Johnson has grass court pedigree, winning his first
:05:40. > :05:44.title in Nottingham, got a lot of matches under his belt and he has a
:05:45. > :05:48.difficult game, big serve, big forehand, heavy slice on the
:05:49. > :05:52.backhand. The attacking form of Federer, the way he finishes points
:05:53. > :05:56.at the net, he was able to target bad side of things and if you are
:05:57. > :06:02.hitting chip passes with Federer's movement, you're going to be able to
:06:03. > :06:06.cut things off. We talked about his movement before the match but Jim,
:06:07. > :06:11.what else impressed you? The fact that everything was clicking for
:06:12. > :06:14.Federer. At the net quite a bit, serving and volleying nicely, not a
:06:15. > :06:20.tonne but enough to keep Steve on it. Never as easy and she think it
:06:21. > :06:23.is going to be. We take Roger Federer's skill for granted all
:06:24. > :06:26.there because it looks so easy for him but Steve Johnson poses some
:06:27. > :06:31.challenges for him and Roger was able to pick on the backhand, get in
:06:32. > :06:34.there, more than anything able to neutralise the's first and second
:06:35. > :06:40.serves by getting the ball back into the backhand corner, enough to get
:06:41. > :06:43.those breaks of serve. When Roger came here, he said, I wasn't sure
:06:44. > :06:51.when I started at Wimbledon what form I was in because he didn't get
:06:52. > :06:56.as preview from Holla, he seemed to move up the gears, Stefan has always
:06:57. > :07:01.incurred tend to do and maybe he is wanting to improve him and say
:07:02. > :07:06.hey... No doubt, Federer was honest about where his game was out and he
:07:07. > :07:10.needed to build momentum, seven matches in Stuttgart coming in and
:07:11. > :07:14.when you reflect on the first week's performance he was never really
:07:15. > :07:17.tested but this was a step up again and certainly, against Cilic in the
:07:18. > :07:21.quarterfinals, that will be an interesting match. Cilic is a
:07:22. > :07:25.dangerous competitor, big serve, very strong off both wings and that
:07:26. > :07:30.is where Federer is going to have to be on his game to advance to the
:07:31. > :07:32.semifinals. Before we talk about Cilic, you may not have seen what
:07:33. > :07:37.happened to Kei Nishikori, this is what happened, this is Michael
:07:38. > :07:42.Chang, telling him you have got to stop, he only won a few points in
:07:43. > :07:47.the first set and they kept encouraging him, please stop, he was
:07:48. > :07:54.6-1, 5-1 down and you can see how reluctantly he walks to the net to
:07:55. > :07:57.shake hands with Marin Cilic. He was forced to pull a bit with the second
:07:58. > :08:01.lustre with a calf injury and here he is, we think it is a recurrence
:08:02. > :08:06.of the rib injury that affected him a couple of weeks ago. So sad. Such
:08:07. > :08:12.a strange injury, happening in the warm up tournament, he slipped and
:08:13. > :08:15.fell and his racket jammed him in the rib, it wasn't necessarily
:08:16. > :08:19.atypical sports injury, more of an accidental one and this is a man who
:08:20. > :08:25.has seen his version of injuries and disappointment. He has been on tour
:08:26. > :08:28.for eight or nine years and has not had a clean run of health and he is
:08:29. > :08:34.a gifted, talented, we saw that in full effect when the two players met
:08:35. > :08:38.in the finals of the US Open in 2014 but for Nishikori, it must be
:08:39. > :08:41.getting so tiresome to have to deal with injury and not be able to let
:08:42. > :08:45.his talent speak to its fullest on these big stages. Tim, is it a case
:08:46. > :08:50.that he is one of the little guys, in a way, maybe he is pushing his
:08:51. > :08:55.body so much against the tall, big hitters that it is just proving too
:08:56. > :08:58.much for him? I think in this case it's a little bit more of a freak
:08:59. > :09:03.injury, look at some of the ailments that he has had, calf injury, it
:09:04. > :09:06.sometimes happens when you are changing services, going from clay
:09:07. > :09:10.to grass to hard or whatever, I think when the players are so
:09:11. > :09:15.professional they work so hard, both on and off the strength and
:09:16. > :09:20.conditioning that they do, I would say he has been unlucky but as
:09:21. > :09:25.Federer has seen, it's so important to maintain your health, to work on
:09:26. > :09:28.injury prevention, so that you can keep the consistency and continuity
:09:29. > :09:31.going of a tournament player and that is what Federer has struggled
:09:32. > :09:37.with and he is building for that in this fortnight. He takes on Cilic,
:09:38. > :09:42.grand slam winner. You know, he knows how to win big matches and you
:09:43. > :09:46.were talking about it before, big weapons, he will attack Federer.
:09:47. > :09:50.Yes, Cilic as a player who we haven't seen the best of since he
:09:51. > :09:53.won the US Open, at the end of that season, he played some exhibition
:09:54. > :09:57.tennis, but himself, couldn't play in the Australian Open, lost his
:09:58. > :10:00.momentum that he building your, this could be almost a rebirth at
:10:01. > :10:05.Wimbledon, a circus that should be good for him, going up against
:10:06. > :10:10.Federer, he knows he has won me to play and that's to try and take the
:10:11. > :10:15.racket add Federer's Hans, bully him, rip big serves on big returns,
:10:16. > :10:19.he is a big, long guy, tough to get the ball past but if he allows
:10:20. > :10:23.Federer to get in the match, get his teeth into it, we will see that
:10:24. > :10:26.Cilic doesn't move very well, particularly when you go behind him.
:10:27. > :10:30.Keep the ball in front of them he actually covers the court well,
:10:31. > :10:33.Federer will know that, he will do his best to get into the rallies and
:10:34. > :10:37.the longer the rallies, the more it will favour Federer. Let's take a
:10:38. > :10:41.look at the draw and take us through this, Tim. What you think is
:10:42. > :10:48.potentially going to happen. The top half with no Djokovic, still, niches
:10:49. > :10:55.looming. Yes, get my crystal ball out and... LAUGHTER Sam Querrey is a
:10:56. > :11:01.strong position, up by two sets and a break, Raonic has played for a
:11:02. > :11:04.well on grass. The final at Queen's Club, lost to marry, I would expect
:11:05. > :11:08.him to come through the top part of the draw, to the semifinals and I
:11:09. > :11:16.expect to see him play Federer in the semis. Federer, Raonic in the
:11:17. > :11:19.semifinals and again... I would give Federer the age coming through to
:11:20. > :11:24.the final. The bottom half, lots to play for. A really intriguing match,
:11:25. > :11:31.third on Centre Court with Murray against Nick Rios, there will be
:11:32. > :11:34.fireworks. Tsonga against Gasq, how much does Tsonga have left up to the
:11:35. > :11:38.match yesterday, that matched with Isner was over two days but it was a
:11:39. > :11:43.marathon. It was the stress, it is what it does to your nervous system
:11:44. > :11:48.to have to survive a length much of that length, no net meaty, I am
:11:49. > :11:52.interested in Bernard Tomic and Lucas Pooley, lower seeded players,
:11:53. > :11:55.Tomic at the beginning of the tournament, I looked at the straw
:11:56. > :12:00.and lightest chances because he was in the section with Stan Wawrinka,
:12:01. > :12:08.manic theme, the top-seeded players, he has a real chance. -- Dominic
:12:09. > :12:10.Thiem. He has a chance to get into the quarterfinals, most likely
:12:11. > :12:14.against Tomas Berdych, the 10th seed, there will be a surprise
:12:15. > :12:20.semifinalist most likely in there in the bottom half. As Tim said,
:12:21. > :12:24.somewhat to play for, lot to talk about, it is just getting going.
:12:25. > :12:29.Just a line about Jiri Vesely, how tough he is, he is taller than
:12:30. > :12:35.Berdych, isn't he? He is elected, six feet six, I saw some of match
:12:36. > :12:40.against Joao Sousa and he got a big serve, not the most athletic of
:12:41. > :12:43.movers but then he is in the position to head the ball he can
:12:44. > :12:47.really crush it from both wings and you know, Berdych, these guys know
:12:48. > :12:51.each other so well, there are no secrets out there. They know when
:12:52. > :12:54.you're in the second week of the Grand Slam you have to go out there
:12:55. > :12:59.and produce the goods, as Jim said, lots to look out for. Expect the
:13:00. > :13:03.unexpected in these championships so far, we will have to see if there
:13:04. > :13:08.are more upsets in the future. Certainly is, just stay there, we
:13:09. > :13:11.mainly due again, we will wait for Serena to come onto Centre Court, we
:13:12. > :13:17.may be talking to the boys again but we are ahead to Andy Murray taking
:13:18. > :13:19.on Nick Rios, Andy has been in amazing form throughout the first
:13:20. > :13:23.week, particularly in his third-round match against John
:13:24. > :13:32.Millman. Richey has been talking to Andy.
:13:33. > :13:41.COMMENTATOR: very efficient from Murray. He is in complete control.
:13:42. > :13:48.He has navigated the opening three rounds without dropping a set. Andy,
:13:49. > :13:51.how do you assess your performance against John Millman? I thought of
:13:52. > :13:56.as a good performance, some tough moments at the end of the second
:13:57. > :14:02.set, 5-5 game was really long. Both of us had opportunities, a lot of
:14:03. > :14:06.long points. Physically, it was testing, that period of the match,
:14:07. > :14:12.managed to get through it, third set, I played some really good
:14:13. > :14:15.stuff. How were you about the situation with Novak, they put the
:14:16. > :14:19.score up, the crowd reacted existed you pay much attention to that at
:14:20. > :14:24.the time? Your Robbie asleep aware of it because the crowd made a noise
:14:25. > :14:30.and it is up on the scoreboard. But... You know, after 10-15 seconds
:14:31. > :14:36.you are back to trying to win your own tennis match and that is where
:14:37. > :14:40.the focus is. How do you some of your work in the first week? It's
:14:41. > :14:42.been good, the last two matches I played some good stuff unfinished
:14:43. > :14:49.but of the match as well, was hitting the ball better as the
:14:50. > :14:52.matches went on. Yes, pretty stress-free start to the tournament
:14:53. > :14:56.and hopefully I can keep it going. Novak being the big headline, his
:14:57. > :15:02.departure, everyone saying you are the favoured, is that fair? I don't
:15:03. > :15:07.put much focused on who other people say is the favourite for the
:15:08. > :15:10.tournament. I mean, for Novak's result to have any bearing on my
:15:11. > :15:16.tournament I need to reach the final anyway, so it doesn't change
:15:17. > :15:21.anything for the next 5-6 days. On my side. My job is to try and win
:15:22. > :15:25.obviously, my matches and I have a very tough on the next round, I need
:15:26. > :15:29.to be ready for that. SUE BARKER: he is so cool, he
:15:30. > :15:34.doesn't sound excited but we are excited about this match. Jim and
:15:35. > :15:37.ten, tell people at home what we should look out for, what is coming
:15:38. > :15:43.up? One thing that you will look for is what is happening on the side of
:15:44. > :15:47.the net of Nick Kyrgios, how he reacts on Centre Court against Andy
:15:48. > :15:51.Murray, a player he respects, a man he likes, that will keep him within
:15:52. > :15:55.the boundaries because he is a wildcard. Trip-mac to not only is
:15:56. > :16:00.unexpected what shots he will make but how he will react mentally,
:16:01. > :16:04.that's what makes him a magnet in my eyes for tennis viewers around the
:16:05. > :16:09.world, he has that star quality but we pretty much know what to expect
:16:10. > :16:15.from Murray, don't we, ten? Fingers crossed! Three sets. Kyrgios, he
:16:16. > :16:20.plays some shots that aren't in the text that. He does, he has weapons
:16:21. > :16:24.to make Murray's life uncomfortable, we have seen him out on the scored a
:16:25. > :16:28.couple of years ago when he beat Rafael Nadal, he has a great serve,
:16:29. > :16:34.it's big, he will be looking to serve around 130, but he hits his
:16:35. > :16:37.spots well, Gregory Asia and, if he can dictate with his forehand from
:16:38. > :16:41.the back of the court, he can push Murray back a little bit, there is
:16:42. > :16:45.no doubt he can make life very difficult for Andy. I think Andy has
:16:46. > :16:49.got to look to get as many balls back in the court as he can and then
:16:50. > :16:52.look to dictate from the back of the court because forehand and backhand
:16:53. > :16:58.on both sides, I think Murray has the edge. Tim, you like to predict
:16:59. > :17:04.how many sets. Four six, 7-6 on the fourth, Murray. LAUGHTER Jim, do you
:17:05. > :17:11.want to have a go? I will go with Nostradamus right now. Yesterday we
:17:12. > :17:17.talked about people's Sunday, he talked about his match... 1998? You
:17:18. > :17:21.remembered every single point. 97. It was... We had a bit of a
:17:22. > :17:25.reminisce, I was trying to line-up gym when we talked about Federer's
:17:26. > :17:32.crosscourt history and they jumped from 98, 99 to 2003 when he won it
:17:33. > :17:37.and I said 2001? He wanted to know who Federer lost two in 2001 and I
:17:38. > :17:43.think Tim knew the answer, that is why he wanted the question asked?
:17:44. > :17:51.How many sets did you beat him? Four. Four. This man, so modest.
:17:52. > :17:56.Jim, he is not that modest. He is a bit like rain man! Thank you very
:17:57. > :17:59.much, guys. We are heading off to Centre Court in a moment, Serena
:18:00. > :18:06.Williams will be walking on to court. What a journey it has been
:18:07. > :18:14.for her. From the park courts in Compton, here she comes. She has her
:18:15. > :18:17.headphones on, listening to music, getting her in the mood, she walks
:18:18. > :18:20.onto her favourite Centre Court to take on Svetlana Kuznetsova.
:18:21. > :18:23.CHEERING APPLAUSE
:18:24. > :18:27.These two players know each other so well.
:18:28. > :18:30.Serena knows exactly what she is going to get from Svetlana, she will
:18:31. > :18:34.be moved around a lot and she knows she's going to have to serve well
:18:35. > :18:40.and try and dominate this match. What a journey it has been for
:18:41. > :18:43.Serena, starting as a kid out in Compton, California, being top I her
:18:44. > :18:47.father, cashiers at Wimbledon trying to reach 22nd Grand Slam title to
:18:48. > :18:52.equal Steffi Graf. What a journey for the world number one.
:18:53. > :19:02.Growing up I was in the richest but I had a family and spirit. I went on
:19:03. > :19:14.the court with just a ball and a racket and hope.
:19:15. > :19:50.Serena Williams is the US Open champion!
:19:51. > :21:44.What a career that has been. The greatest ever... Probably. She still
:21:45. > :21:48.is eyeing a 22nd Grand Slam title but she has got a fourth-round match
:21:49. > :21:52.to deal with on Centre Court. Svetlana Kuznetsova, we will be with
:21:53. > :21:55.this match in just a moment but on this very busy day, all fourth round
:21:56. > :22:03.match is being completed, we will show you what has been happening
:22:04. > :22:05.outside and look at this, 8-7 in the third and final set, tennis of the
:22:06. > :22:10.highest quality, one of the great adverts for women's tennis and it
:22:11. > :22:14.has been won by Dominika Cibulkova, 19th seed, she won at the spawn,
:22:15. > :22:20.look what it means to her, they both had match points, a wonderful match,
:22:21. > :22:26.it had it all. Great quality and drama. She has put out former
:22:27. > :22:29.finalist Aga Radwanska, 9-7 in the third set, the crowd on their feet,
:22:30. > :22:35.they loved that match, three hours of brilliant tennis.
:22:36. > :22:44.And just a few moments ago, Simona Halep put out Madison Keys, 6-3 in
:22:45. > :22:48.the third but towards the end, Madison Keys struggling with an
:22:49. > :22:54.injury, Halep taking advantage, 6-3 she is through to the quarterfinals,
:22:55. > :23:00.she will meet Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber. Halep
:23:01. > :23:03.through on Court One. We are ready for Centre Court, they are just
:23:04. > :23:07.about to get under way, Williams against Kuznetsova and in the
:23:08. > :23:10.commentary box, Lindsay Davenport and Sam Smith.
:23:11. > :23:13.COMMENTATOR: We have already had one great on the
:23:14. > :23:18.court in the form of Roger Federer, here is another, possibly the
:23:19. > :23:23.greatest of all time. Not just begin to be great, looking to be historic
:23:24. > :23:30.as well. Four matches away from equalling Steffi Graf's Grand Slam
:23:31. > :23:35.of 22, the defending champion Serena Williams, out here on people's
:23:36. > :23:40.Sunday, very comfortable against Ana Quebec, taking on someone very
:23:41. > :23:48.different in the form of the 13th seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova. Lindsay
:23:49. > :23:52.Davenport, beside me, you were over on Court Number One yesterday, 5-3
:23:53. > :23:55.down against Sloane Stephens, I wonder how the legs are? I was
:23:56. > :24:02.thinking the same thing, always tough to play back-to-back days,
:24:03. > :24:05.especially at majors, more attention and pressure. Kuznetsova had a
:24:06. > :24:10.massive physical and emotional battle yesterday. Quite the opposite
:24:11. > :24:19.for Serena who had one of her best and easiest matches of the
:24:20. > :24:24.tournament. UMPIRE: first set. Serena Williams to serve.
:24:25. > :25:09.What a way to start! APPLAUSE
:25:10. > :25:15.Positive for Kuznetsova. Not many players on the WTA Tour who can come
:25:16. > :25:18.anywhere near the category of athleticism of Serena. But she is
:25:19. > :25:23.one of them, strong mover. One of the few that plays offence
:25:24. > :26:29.and defence well. That's been something that we have
:26:30. > :26:35.been used to from Serena at these championships. Served plenty of
:26:36. > :26:42.bases, 26 and all, but that is her 13th double faults, pretty big
:26:43. > :27:17.number for Serena. Fortunately... Plenty to balance the books.
:27:18. > :27:26.Fine start from the defending champion.
:27:27. > :27:33.I cannot imagine what the job is like organising the Williams layer
:27:34. > :27:40.box tickets... There is her mother. Just on her right, her sister. Doors
:27:41. > :27:44.are locked up tennis watching. Mum goes backwards and forwards between
:27:45. > :27:50.Serena's matches, venous's matches... Venus is just about to
:27:51. > :27:59.take to the court right now over on Court Number One. Various Serena's
:28:00. > :28:04.coach and hitting partner. The other day, when bin is one, so cute,
:28:05. > :28:06.dramatic match, her mother went up and gave a fist pump and she was
:28:07. > :28:18.already running towards the exit. Already to get over on Centre Court
:28:19. > :28:25.for Serena was down a break to Christina McHale. Still cover is the
:28:26. > :28:34.ground well, doesn't she? After all these years. Always so much energy.
:28:35. > :28:39.Are relaxed. She keeps so can during the matches, but you know, two
:28:40. > :28:44.daughters at this level for so long, it is a tough ask. -- trip-mac
:28:45. > :28:57.three. -- calm. It is never a good sign when Serena
:28:58. > :29:02.is playing offence of tennis in the beginning. Inside the baseline, in
:29:03. > :29:07.position for shots. Kuznetsova has got to try and hit the ball steeper
:29:08. > :29:32.and bigger to try and push and keep Serena off the baseline.
:29:33. > :29:41.Svetlana turned 31, the very first day at the Championships. I imagine
:29:42. > :29:44.celebrations were early neutered. I think they will be held over until
:29:45. > :29:54.after Wimbledon and she likes a good party. -- fairly neutered. Huge
:29:55. > :30:00.respect between these two, they get on pretty well off the court.
:30:01. > :30:22.Martinez, the Spanish coach for its Svetlana.
:30:23. > :30:31.It seems like Serena turned a corner over the weekend. One match, maybe
:30:32. > :30:37.two matches, her game looks a little off, she might look a little
:30:38. > :32:15.vulnerable but yesterday, it was slowing, right where she left off.
:32:16. > :32:26.Just behind Patrick is Serena's nephew. There was a documentary last
:32:27. > :32:32.night on Serena. Looks a bit sleepy, maybe you stay up to watch it last
:32:33. > :32:36.night. Maybe he is not into the tennis. He has a history of falling
:32:37. > :32:54.asleep during matches. Kuznetsova has got to find a mix of
:32:55. > :33:00.offence and defence. I would like to see her take a few chances and go
:33:01. > :33:04.for some big forehands. That is how she won the US Open and the French.
:33:05. > :33:20.Sometimes I feel she plays a little too passive these days.
:33:21. > :33:28.Both women have settled in and are safely aboard. It is the 13th
:33:29. > :33:31.meeting between these two. Serena has only lost four times this year
:33:32. > :33:59.and one of them has been to her opponent today.
:34:00. > :34:07.Purser is just so monster. It is the biggest weapon we have had in
:34:08. > :34:10.women's tennis. And time and time again, especially in Wimbledon on
:34:11. > :34:37.the grass, it gives her so many free points.
:34:38. > :34:43.Wow, I sing again as she loves to do, an ominous sign for her opponent
:34:44. > :35:00.today. And this will frighten everyone else
:35:01. > :35:05.in this section of the draw, Lindsay, she is tracking better than
:35:06. > :35:10.she was 12 months ago. That is amazing, even at her age, our desire
:35:11. > :35:17.is so strong. You can see improvement in all areas. First
:35:18. > :35:23.serve percentage, points one on both first and second service. That is a
:35:24. > :35:27.scary sight for her opposition. When you say she is working on her serve,
:35:28. > :35:33.is that her standing with Patrick and Robbie and a bucket of balls and
:35:34. > :35:38.serving messy-mac or is it video analysis, the stats on the Hawk-Eye
:35:39. > :35:42.data? After the French Open she posted the video to one of her
:35:43. > :35:47.social media sites and it was her alone out on the court at seven
:35:48. > :35:55.a.m., she showed her watch, and she said, I refuse to not get better and
:35:56. > :36:00.she had this big bucket of balls and started serving by herself. The more
:36:01. > :36:04.time she spends on the court, the better she gets. The coaching staff,
:36:05. > :36:10.Patrick and Robbie, they break it down and they do all the analysis
:36:11. > :36:13.and they present it to Serena. The Australian Open and French Open
:36:14. > :37:08.losses have no doubt motivated her even more.
:37:09. > :37:16.Lindsay, you have played Serena many times. Where do you serve to her on
:37:17. > :37:19.a grass court? The difference between Venus and Serena, Venus you
:37:20. > :37:25.felt like you had some safety on the forehand wing. Serena, possibly the
:37:26. > :37:30.body, although she has got better at that return over the years. I am
:37:31. > :37:34.always scared of the forehand. When it is on and she is playing well,
:37:35. > :37:38.she gets great reach on that side and she has a tremendous amount of
:37:39. > :37:47.pace. Anything that you can do to get it out of the strike zone. To
:37:48. > :37:53.get her away from the ball. Above where she likes to make contact. Not
:37:54. > :37:57.many players have a good kick-serve. Kuznetsova has a good one. It will
:37:58. > :38:01.be interesting to see whether she can use it today. The court has to
:38:02. > :38:14.be pretty baked to get them up. The most important thing is to be
:38:15. > :38:21.aware of what is happening on the court with Serena. Some days one
:38:22. > :38:27.shot is better than the other, some days she is more confident with
:38:28. > :38:32.certain shots. It is a very bad sign when she is hitting winners from all
:38:33. > :38:39.over. There are already ten in this match. The pressure is building and
:38:40. > :38:41.Kuznetsova was not able to hang on and it was a rather easy break of
:38:42. > :39:02.serve for the defending champion. Anna Wintour has been at the helm of
:39:03. > :39:11.women's Vogue almost as long as Serena has been at the top of
:39:12. > :39:16.women's tennis! She would have been very happy with her two favourite
:39:17. > :41:04.players playing back-to-back here on Centre Court.
:41:05. > :41:13.You do not get many openings in a Serena service type of game. Those
:41:14. > :41:16.are the type of returns that have to get back in the court if you are
:41:17. > :41:38.Kuznetsova. Made it. An excellent job of turning
:41:39. > :41:40.defence into fence, reacting at the beginning of the points and slowly
:41:41. > :41:57.able to turn the tide there. How many times have we seen that?
:41:58. > :42:00.Svetlana would have seen it so often, they have been battling
:42:01. > :42:04.against each other for over 12 years now. Serena has won the majority of
:42:05. > :42:51.their meetings. That was a rather unfortunate timing
:42:52. > :43:19.for a sneeze. I am sure the pollen count is rather high today.
:43:20. > :43:27.Nice variety from Kuznetsova. Such a great mix of power and also finesse.
:43:28. > :43:36.What do you think her game plan is today? You have to fight off the
:43:37. > :43:41.first few shots against Serena. Make returns from her effective service.
:43:42. > :43:44.But she has got to slowly take control of some of the rallies. Use
:43:45. > :44:06.her forehand, open up the court. Again, anything that an opponent can
:44:07. > :44:08.do to get Serena to be off balance. She went wide on the last break
:44:09. > :44:37.point. Serena has only been broken four
:44:38. > :45:03.times in the championship so far. That is the forehand she has got to
:45:04. > :45:18.use. The second serve was just sitting
:45:19. > :46:37.there. What a difference. 118 for the first and 90 on the last.
:46:38. > :46:43.The ration is really digging in. Fourth chance to break in this game.
:46:44. > :46:57.-- Russian. It is not often she goes out wide on
:46:58. > :47:04.break point. Generally she goes down the T. And she has used the wide
:47:05. > :47:08.serve here today and that is why it is so hard to get a sense of Serena.
:47:09. > :47:17.In other matches it is a different shot that fails her out.
:47:18. > :47:39.Again this is what we are not used to seeing. It is the second serve
:47:40. > :47:46.that is problematic in this tournament. Three of the four break
:47:47. > :47:56.point she has gone wide. Let's see where the fifth one goes.
:47:57. > :48:12.Serena is broken and we are back on serve in this opening set.
:48:13. > :48:20.Martina Navratilova is turning 60 this year. She is an inspiration and
:48:21. > :48:26.if I was an inspiration to her, she has been one to me. Defecting to
:48:27. > :48:31.America she transformed the spot. Everybody had a lucky break in life,
:48:32. > :48:35.she was my lucky break. Maybe Martina for every will be the best
:48:36. > :48:40.ever singles, doubles and mixed players. She is an all-round great
:48:41. > :48:49.athlete. She was so wonderfully joyous when she won. A pioneer, an
:48:50. > :48:54.activist, an icon. What a fascinating life she has had,
:48:55. > :48:58.leaving her family in Czechoslovakia, moving to America
:48:59. > :49:03.and going on to become a great champion. That documentary on my
:49:04. > :49:10.Tina is tonight at 10:45pm and 11:40pm if you are watching in
:49:11. > :49:15.Wales. She went on to win so many Grand Slam matches, she won 306 in
:49:16. > :49:22.total and Roger Federer has joined her on that. He defeated Steve
:49:23. > :49:26.Johnson on Centre Court today to equal 306 Grand Slam victories for
:49:27. > :49:30.the great man. He knew he had to lift his game today against a
:49:31. > :49:35.dangerous opponent, a big hitter from America, Steve Johnson, and he
:49:36. > :49:41.do that. His best performance of the championship so far. Roger Federer
:49:42. > :49:46.looking supreme on centre, moving well, attacking all the time and
:49:47. > :49:51.back to his best. Venus Williams will be on Court Number One on the
:49:52. > :49:56.red button. Milos Raonic against David Goffin is on BBC Two, but we
:49:57. > :50:22.are staying on Centre Court. Kuznetsova is looking much more
:50:23. > :50:27.comfortable in this match than in the first few games. She is a bit
:50:28. > :50:32.more accustomed to the Williams' pace. She played a long, tough match
:50:33. > :50:55.yesterday against Sloane Stephens. You have to respect the power of
:50:56. > :51:01.Serena. Kuznetsova was deep in the court, well behind the baseline and
:51:02. > :51:52.Serena recognised that. It was a soft angle.
:51:53. > :52:00.Kuznetsova is settling in here rather nicely. Just under a week ago
:52:01. > :52:05.on Tuesday she was out here against Caroline Wozniacki. That was a tight
:52:06. > :52:13.match. She has certainly got her bearings this year on Centre Court.
:52:14. > :52:26.She could trouble Williams. What a top drawer she has had to burn this
:52:27. > :52:32.fourth-round match with Serena. She is not intimidated by anybody,
:52:33. > :52:35.anywhere, any place. Kuznetsova has the game, she has the power and the
:52:36. > :53:45.ability to move well. A nice turnaround from Kuznetsova
:53:46. > :53:49.from 3-1 down. It is the little things against Serena, being able to
:53:50. > :53:52.win some of those close games. Once you break serve, being able to
:53:53. > :54:32.consolidate it with a hold. Just a little down on her average.
:54:33. > :55:14.Normally it is round of 74, 70 five miles an hour.
:55:15. > :55:29.That was her eighth ace and order is restored.
:55:30. > :55:41.Lindsay, if Serena Williams was 5% down on her best this year, would
:55:42. > :55:45.any of us notice? Or would it be only players standing at the other
:55:46. > :55:48.end of the court who would feel it? I sense in the locker room there is
:55:49. > :55:55.a feeling that Serena now is beatable. Absolutely and I think we
:55:56. > :56:00.have seen it in both the Grand Slam finals, but more interestingly in
:56:01. > :56:07.the Australian Open final. In Paris it did not seem like Serena had a
:56:08. > :56:12.chance. In Australia it was one of the first times I had seen Serena
:56:13. > :56:16.lose a Grand Slam final by just being a little bit tight. The first
:56:17. > :56:21.serve was not there for her in the final set to win the key points and
:56:22. > :56:26.Angelique Kerber was resilient enforcing Serena to play. One of the
:56:27. > :56:31.first times Serena has not been able to hit her way out of a match. Jack
:56:32. > :56:40.Nicklaus, it is great to see him at the tennis. Danny Willett in his
:56:41. > :56:48.Masters jacket. Does he ever take it off? A wonderful achievement for
:56:49. > :56:56.Danny. Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood. Hopefully he will make the Ryder Cup
:56:57. > :57:02.team. Is it golf day in the Royal box? I think it is Ryder Cup day. It
:57:03. > :57:50.is always some sort of day here in Wimbledon.
:57:51. > :58:07.Works. That is about as bad as you will see Serena hit a shot. There
:58:08. > :58:09.are probably a couple of thousand Club players on the Centre Court
:58:10. > :58:24.right now feeling a lot better! An immediate overruled from the
:58:25. > :58:56.umpire in the chair. That is a fantastic example of using
:58:57. > :59:01.the body serve, especially on grass. Slicing that served into Williams,
:59:02. > :59:02.she struggled to make contact with her left hip and it opens up the
:59:03. > :59:24.court. Kuznetsova answering with a love
:59:25. > :59:26.service game of her own. She has got comfortable out here against
:59:27. > :59:48.Williams on the Centre Court, Lindsay.
:59:49. > :00:11.That last forehand was 83 mph. Well above average.
:00:12. > :00:22.Again the second serve, the vulnerable part of Serena's game.
:00:23. > :00:43.Kuznetsova was able to put some pressure on Serena with that return.
:00:44. > :00:48.APPLAUSE Kuznetsova had a forehand early in that rally where she had
:00:49. > :00:54.the time. She was passive and Serena able to take control on this rally.
:00:55. > :00:59.On the surface, if you get a shot and you have time against Serena,
:01:00. > :01:10.you have to play -- you have to play offence against her. Kuznetsova does
:01:11. > :01:35.have the ability to put Serena in awkward places on the court.
:01:36. > :02:14.It is long. Williams just starting to fragment.
:02:15. > :02:20.Kuznetsova in strange circumstances, the rain is coming down. And the
:02:21. > :02:32.Russian will serve for this first set. What drama on Centre Court!
:02:33. > :02:42.Sue Barker: Writeback with this match to see Kuznetsova serving out
:02:43. > :02:50.but the umpire having a look at how wet the court is to see whether they
:02:51. > :02:55.will carry on. It looks as though that are going to carry on. If we
:02:56. > :03:00.can to see the umpire, yes, the players are not going away and look
:03:01. > :03:04.at the pain on Serena's face. She has let her chances slip and she
:03:05. > :03:11.knows it. Still some rain coming down. And this is really tricky,
:03:12. > :03:23.this part of the match. You do not want to risk injury on a slippery
:03:24. > :03:28.surface. They are doing the same on Court Number One. Lindsey and Sam,
:03:29. > :03:33.how wet you feel it is and how, do you think they will go off? It is
:03:34. > :03:39.almost as if somebody had a large watering can and the roof pouring it
:03:40. > :03:46.over the court. Even just during the point. It seems to have stopped. It
:03:47. > :03:50.is the strangest thing. It started raining as Serena was serving and
:03:51. > :03:54.she could not stop the point and it rained through the point. I have
:03:55. > :03:58.looked at the radar, it does not look to be longer, it just a tiny
:03:59. > :04:04.bit of blue around Wimbledon. Does this add to the drama, Lindsey?
:04:05. > :04:09.Absolutely and four Kuznetsova to make this comeback and for Serena to
:04:10. > :04:14.slip on break point when the rain started to come down. But from 3-1
:04:15. > :04:19.down, Kuznetsova has done a remarkable job of turning this first
:04:20. > :04:22.set around. Looking at Serena at the change of end, she looked
:04:23. > :04:30.distraught. She rarely let these chances slip through, does she, Sam?
:04:31. > :04:33.No, one of the questions I have about Williams, we have talked about
:04:34. > :04:41.it a lot in commentary. The first serve as good as ever, the second
:04:42. > :04:44.serve does look a bit problematic. Somebody rang the two in the world
:04:45. > :04:50.and twice a Grand Slam champion who has beaten Serena Williams this
:04:51. > :04:52.year, that opens the door and she could be the defending champion.
:04:53. > :04:59.Anything can happen here. Just to let you know, they are carrying on
:05:00. > :05:07.playing on all courts around the outside courts, including two were
:05:08. > :05:12.David Goffin and Milos Raonic have been playing, and also on Court
:05:13. > :05:16.Number One web venous displaying in her match and is a break of serve
:05:17. > :05:21.down against Carla Suarez Navarro, so not going well for the Williams
:05:22. > :05:23.sisters. But it looks as though Svetlana Kuznetsova does seem to be
:05:24. > :05:29.playing some of her best tennis again, her form drops. She has not
:05:30. > :05:35.been at the stage before but has returned. A tough draw helps, a
:05:36. > :05:38.great first-time winner against Caroline Wozniacki. A win over
:05:39. > :05:43.Sloane Stephens and against Serena in March. She is a player that
:05:44. > :06:07.believes right now. Can she serve it out? Let's see.
:06:08. > :06:25.COMMENTARY: Beware of a fired up Serena.
:06:26. > :06:43.The variety of Kuznetsova has thrown Williams of her game. And Kuznetsova
:06:44. > :07:29.hitting Glo slices, high balls. -- Lowe. Serena has lost her rhythm.
:07:30. > :07:34.After the double fault, Kuznetsova spinning that first serve in.
:07:35. > :07:39.Serving first set on grass against one of the greatest of all times,
:07:40. > :07:43.you have to believe and go for your shots Ulster Kuznetsova does not
:07:44. > :07:46.believe right now. Playing a little passively trying to close this first
:07:47. > :08:04.set out -- go for your shots. The mist has started to fall again.
:08:05. > :08:43.Ever so lightly. I am sure Serena would love it if
:08:44. > :08:50.they closed the roof. Mildly suggesting it! She could serve a
:08:51. > :08:55.couple more aces. She has already had a tumble, so you can understand
:08:56. > :08:58.the concern. She has a legitimate complaint. If there is much to
:08:59. > :09:02.falling out of the sky, they should absolutely not play on grass. The
:09:03. > :09:08.great thing is that Svetlana and Serena have had a chat, they get on
:09:09. > :09:13.well, they could have a conversation here. If they are both unhappy,
:09:14. > :09:21.there is not a what anybody can do about that. -- not a lot. It is just
:09:22. > :09:27.spitting ever so slightly. Moisture in the air. I blame my web
:09:28. > :09:40.applications, I have three on the go! There was a consensus... A ball
:09:41. > :09:45.child run across to get a ball and just slipped. And this is a lot
:09:46. > :09:50.greener in the second week than they would normally be. They need to call
:09:51. > :10:01.the trainer. Trying not to laugh, bless him! He knows he has the
:10:02. > :10:07.cameras on him. He we go. Oh, dear! He rolled over well. He took it like
:10:08. > :10:12.a champion! That is all you need to see in the crowd or at home watching
:10:13. > :10:30.on TV. They do have to get this right. You
:10:31. > :10:34.can see the referee Andrew Jarrod outside our commentary box. He is
:10:35. > :11:19.courtside and is coming on now. That is the bones of it, please do
:11:20. > :11:23.want to play, they do not want to stop and start. They are both so
:11:24. > :11:56.experienced and not taking any risks.
:11:57. > :12:03.APPLAUSE They are going to check the radar. Serena wants the roof. You
:12:04. > :12:12.cannot blame her. The weather is from the West. It is coming over
:12:13. > :12:20.from our right. The tournament does do their best to keep this and
:12:21. > :12:23.outdoor tournament. The other day was interesting, Venus had to play
:12:24. > :12:28.five games under a steady drizzle and they were not playing anywhere
:12:29. > :12:34.else on the grounds. All the outside courts had stopped play. That was on
:12:35. > :12:42.Court One. Exactly, yes. UMPIRE: Ladies and
:12:43. > :12:46.gentlemen, play is suspended. Not much they can do about it if players
:12:47. > :12:54.of this stature say it is too wet to play. Serena has already taken a big
:12:55. > :12:58.humble. You cannot risk it. Maybe this is the sensible decision --
:12:59. > :13:05.tumble. That is the friendship you had been talking about, discussing
:13:06. > :13:11.it as they walk off court. Power, girl power stops play on Centre
:13:12. > :13:14.Court. Long-time friends. Sue Barker: Hugely disappointing for the
:13:15. > :13:18.spectators and players, the last thing they want to do at a crucial
:13:19. > :13:24.stage. A fourth round match at Wimbledon. They will be back very
:13:25. > :13:28.soon, this is just a short shower. Late is continuing elsewhere. That
:13:29. > :13:34.is coming our way. Not great but not rainy. We will keep an eye on Centre
:13:35. > :13:38.Court to see when the players return. But play continues
:13:39. > :13:43.elsewhere. So we will go to Court Number One were older sister Venus
:13:44. > :13:49.Williams is in action and she will have to break now because this young
:13:50. > :13:55.lady Carla Suarez Navarro is 5-4 up and serving for the first set so
:13:56. > :13:58.Serena broke, it is venous able to break? Questioning our commentators
:13:59. > :14:06.Annabel Croft and Simon Reed. -- is venous.
:14:07. > :14:14.COMMENTARY: Suarez Navarro at 5-4 and serving for the first set. A
:14:15. > :14:17.very indifferent start from Venus Williams, out of sorts, very flat
:14:18. > :14:24.and dropped the first three games. She has held her own since. Suarez
:14:25. > :14:29.Navarro starting to make some mistakes. And Cheetah Martinez, the
:14:30. > :14:35.Davis Cup captain from Spain crossing her fingers -- Conchita.
:14:36. > :14:40.Suarez Navarro serves for the set after 35 and it is. It is the latest
:14:41. > :14:42.of rain. It continues. They stopped for a couple of minutes and they did
:14:43. > :15:13.not go off and they are continuing. This is her mother who has hotfooted
:15:14. > :15:45.it from Centre Court to watch here. This is a big match for Suarez
:15:46. > :15:50.Navarro. She got to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, twice Roland
:15:51. > :15:56.Garros and US Open but never reached the last eight here. Got the last 16
:15:57. > :16:08.three-year is ago, Petra Kvitova beat her. She has beaten everyone
:16:09. > :16:15.there. APPLAUSE That such a clever point from Suarez Navarro.
:16:16. > :16:18.She is using her serve very effectively. It is not a massive
:16:19. > :16:23.serve which she got incredible angle on that. Sliced it out wide. Really
:16:24. > :16:33.opening the court into the Open space.
:16:34. > :16:41.Just a little careless. So here, a couple of break. She has already
:16:42. > :17:22.broken once. -- rate points. That is the power of Venus Williams.
:17:23. > :17:26.That has to be the tactic from now. We have seen a mixture of tactics
:17:27. > :17:31.from Venus and she has tried ripping some shots and is so much more
:17:32. > :17:34.impressive on that front foot, hitting through the court and
:17:35. > :17:39.getting the power behind the ball. And Suarez Navarro had no answer
:17:40. > :18:09.when she is playing like that. Really dictating the play.
:18:10. > :18:19.Venus working her way back into the point well will stop a bad error
:18:20. > :18:23.from the Spaniard. Yes, it was. And also a slightly wobbly second serve
:18:24. > :18:31.from Venus Williams, short in the box. She has had problems on the
:18:32. > :18:34.second serve in these championships. It is the last second serve, Venus
:18:35. > :18:49.Williams is per hour. This is a lot quicker. -- 79 mph. That did not
:18:50. > :18:57.miss by much. She is going to challenge. She is not a natural
:18:58. > :19:05.challenge, very close, this. It might be out. We shall see. A little
:19:06. > :19:25.bit of the line. That got the crowd going. A little bit lucky.
:19:26. > :19:35.She seems to be playing without energy in the first ten, 15 minutes.
:19:36. > :19:36.She has found some now. A chance for her to go ahead in the match for the
:19:37. > :20:09.first time. That is service game from Venus, she
:20:10. > :20:16.is leading 6-5. Sue Barker: Venus doing exactly what
:20:17. > :20:21.Serena did on Centre Court, a break when the opponent is serving for the
:20:22. > :20:26.set. 6-5, right back with this could play continues on Court One. That is
:20:27. > :20:29.not the case on Centre Court and tournament referee Andrew Jarrett
:20:30. > :20:34.has decided to close the roof and they will be walking gone in just
:20:35. > :20:37.over ten minutes. So Serena Williams against Svetlana Kuznetsova. That
:20:38. > :20:45.will continue and they will be back on court at around quarter past
:20:46. > :20:51.four. But let's take a look at what is happening on two and we have
:20:52. > :20:54.talked so much about Milos Raonic, but David Goffin had other ideas,
:20:55. > :21:00.taking the first two sets and finding a way to the bait -- to
:21:01. > :21:03.break the big serve Milos Raonic. Ran it with two break points so
:21:04. > :21:10.maybe the Canadian getting back in the match -- Milos Raonic. That is
:21:11. > :21:18.on BBC Two. Back we go to Court Number One.
:21:19. > :21:21.COMMENTARY: Venus a game away from the first set. She has really
:21:22. > :21:26.struggled through it and she has found a way to get in front. Let's
:21:27. > :21:35.see if she can capitalise on this, topsy-turvy match so far. The rain
:21:36. > :21:40.seems to have stopped completely on Court One, it shows you how local it
:21:41. > :21:51.is. Reigning much more on Centre Court than it is here. -- reigning.
:21:52. > :21:59.It is the right shot. Well, it was the right shot. We have seen
:22:00. > :22:03.fantastic backhands down the line from Venus in this opening set but
:22:04. > :22:19.it has been interspersed with erratic play.
:22:20. > :22:27.UMPIRE: Let, second serve. This second serve has got the
:22:28. > :22:31.treatment a couple of times from Venus, I wonder if she will take
:22:32. > :22:35.this on the rise. That was not close. She is getting away with it
:22:36. > :23:05.on second serve. That is stunning. Just a classic
:23:06. > :23:09.backhand, this. So rare in the women's tour. Early preparation,
:23:10. > :23:13.beautiful top-spin of the back of the ball. ?FORCEDWHITE UMPIRE: Let,
:23:14. > :23:37.first serve. Yes. Not quite the impact that she
:23:38. > :23:40.wanted on the backhand that time. Because she hits with so much
:23:41. > :23:45.top-spin, you could see how that construction of a point would work
:23:46. > :23:48.on any other surface. But on grass sitting invitingly to be hit, it was
:23:49. > :24:11.left a little bit stranded. She had to stoop down and did not
:24:12. > :24:18.have the technique to deal with it. So we are in for a break-up. They
:24:19. > :24:20.have met six times before, 3-3 in the head-to-head, they have never
:24:21. > :24:34.had a break in the matches between them but they have this week. Venus
:24:35. > :24:36.winning the first set against Donna Vekic in the first round of the
:24:37. > :25:01.tie-break. You can see Venus moving forward and
:25:02. > :25:06.Suarez Navarro saw that out of the corner of her eye. Yes, she
:25:07. > :25:11.anticipated so well. You can see this ball not doing enough damage.
:25:12. > :25:15.Straight into the strike zone. That is the angle she can create with the
:25:16. > :25:25.backhand, a lot of wrist action and great preparation as well.
:25:26. > :25:37.Should have made it! She knows it. And she is angry with herself. It
:25:38. > :25:41.was there for her. Well, it was the right shot, wasn't it? Yes, Venus
:25:42. > :25:48.just a fraction slower. Out that forehand. That is her coach with
:25:49. > :26:08.Conchita Martinez. You just cannot afford any Sloper --
:26:09. > :26:09.any sloppy errors and high breaks, it is like a penalty shoot out, you
:26:10. > :26:38.have to be really on your guard. Yes. Keeping it simple. Venus. And
:26:39. > :26:40.it worked. She is very quick to spot of short ball, move up to it and to
:26:41. > :26:59.take advantage. That is a great serve! 70 mph. She
:27:00. > :27:04.started slow in the second round and in the last match, but she finished
:27:05. > :27:08.strong. To be honest, if you watched the first ten minutes, you would not
:27:09. > :27:09.have given her a price in this match. Now she is looking pretty
:27:10. > :27:36.good. Suarez Navarro hammering away. And
:27:37. > :27:40.the rain is coming down again. Well, this would be a horrible time to go
:27:41. > :27:45.off right in the middle of a tie-break, just when Venus has
:27:46. > :27:48.started to get her momentum going. I cannot see they are going to
:27:49. > :27:53.continue in this. It is very fine rain, but there is an awful lot of
:27:54. > :28:02.it. They are pausing. Yes, the ground crew are coming on and it
:28:03. > :28:09.looks as if we are going off. Yes, play is suspended. That is tough,
:28:10. > :28:17.really tough. That is the situation and Williams 4- to head in this
:28:18. > :28:22.tie-break. -- 4-2. I do not know who gets the advantage. Venus being up
:28:23. > :28:27.in the tie-break is a huge benefit. Certainly better than being 4-2
:28:28. > :28:30.down. You do get a chance to go back to the locker room and normally you
:28:31. > :28:34.would not get a chance to talk to your coach, they make have spotted
:28:35. > :28:39.something you have not in the match. It did take time to get going and I
:28:40. > :28:46.feel she needs momentum in a match. It is not look good point Not
:28:47. > :28:50.looking happy. It is so random. She never knows on any given day if she
:28:51. > :28:56.will wake up full of energy or no energy. It seems to be the latter.
:28:57. > :29:07.But she has really got some work. It is just so frustrating for
:29:08. > :29:16.everyone. We arrived in beautiful sun sign, a
:29:17. > :29:21.lovely hot Summer's day and you thought we could get going with
:29:22. > :29:27.Wimbledon and enjoy the tennis -- sunshine. Just disruption and
:29:28. > :29:34.emotionally draining for everyone. So a frustrating day so far. We do
:29:35. > :29:39.not expect this to last long. Carol said this could be a passing shower,
:29:40. > :29:44.hopefully this is it. The umbrellas again very much used for the
:29:45. > :30:05.spectators here. Ace seesawing match. Suarez Navarro
:30:06. > :30:10.going 3-0 up and Venus looking in the doldrums. Sluggish, not really
:30:11. > :30:14.moving. At gradually, she got her feet moving. She got the first break
:30:15. > :30:19.backhand the second in time for the tie-break. I feel as if it has been
:30:20. > :30:23.very fluctuating from both of them. Both of them have not been playing
:30:24. > :30:28.well at the same time and I feel Venus has tried out different
:30:29. > :30:33.tactics. She has tried rupiah shots with spin and more height over the
:30:34. > :30:37.net, that did not really work -- loopy. For more impressive on the
:30:38. > :30:41.front foot. Suarez Navarro has held her own and you do not feel her game
:30:42. > :30:44.would transfer well onto the grass court but she can open up the court
:30:45. > :30:50.with it and she uses her serve effectively into the body. An
:30:51. > :30:57.intriguing first set. Very difficult to predict because we have had the
:30:58. > :31:01.two distinctly different stages of the first set. Suarez Navarro but as
:31:02. > :31:07.though she could be a runaway winner after the first 15 minutes but Venus
:31:08. > :31:12.comment back after that. You feel it is in the hands of Venus, she does
:31:13. > :31:15.possess so much more weight shot and power through the court, although
:31:16. > :31:23.her serve is not as effective and she does not serve as many aces. We
:31:24. > :31:29.are going to take a break. It is in the tie-breaker. Six games each. But
:31:30. > :31:34.it is for- two, Williams. Sue Barker: What an unfortunate
:31:35. > :31:36.place to stop, 4-2 in the tie-break. A lot for Suarez Navarro to think
:31:37. > :31:50.about as she waits I'm afraid we have no tennis for you
:31:51. > :31:54.on Court Number One but on Centre Court, they have close the roof and
:31:55. > :32:01.so Serena and Svetlana are making their way back onto court. And they
:32:02. > :32:07.have a five minute warm up, because it is a change of conditions. Five
:32:08. > :32:20.minutes to get used to playing under the roof. So Serena Williams here
:32:21. > :32:25.looking for her 22nd grand slam title, that is what she has been
:32:26. > :32:29.looking for since she lost the title last year but she lost in the
:32:30. > :32:34.semifinal of the US Open, and then lost to my grand slam finals, the
:32:35. > :32:40.first against Angelique Kerber and then at Roland Garros. So much
:32:41. > :32:46.expected this year from her opponent they are, but she went out early.
:32:47. > :32:50.Serena will be continuing our fourth mound weight round match and it is
:32:51. > :32:52.five games all in the first set. Right back with this match in just a
:32:53. > :32:59.moment but a few results to bring it. First of all, this was on Court
:33:00. > :33:05.Number One, Madison Keys was beaten by Simona Halep. Madison was
:33:06. > :33:11.struggling. Unfortunately, an injury, but Simona Halep, just too
:33:12. > :33:16.good. Delighted to be through to the quarterfinal. 6-3 in the final set.
:33:17. > :33:20.Madison Keys, into the top ten for the first time but she will have to
:33:21. > :33:27.wait another year. We will see this young lady once again tomorrow. And
:33:28. > :33:30.she is through to face the Australian Open champion, Angelique
:33:31. > :33:43.Kerber. What about this for a match point? Let's enjoy it one more time.
:33:44. > :33:51.And that is the way to win a match. And what a reaction from Angelique
:33:52. > :33:55.Kerber. The highest seed still in the bottom half of the draw. As you
:33:56. > :34:06.can tell, she is playing very well, losing just four games. Wonderful
:34:07. > :34:13.scenes on court. An even better manage over on Court number three.
:34:14. > :34:19.Cibulkova, the 19 seed, putting out Radwanska. This was a great advert
:34:20. > :34:28.for women's tennis and the quality was just outstanding. Winner after
:34:29. > :34:34.winner. Hard, long, testing rallies. She had had to save a match point
:34:35. > :34:38.against Radwanska but it was a match that had it all. Wonderful tennis
:34:39. > :34:43.and great drama. Anyone who had a ticket on Court three and a match to
:34:44. > :34:47.remember. Cibulkova, not the tallest on the tour but certainly with the
:34:48. > :34:56.biggest art. And she packs a punch. She is through to face either
:34:57. > :35:10.Makarova or Elena McKeever. What a match on Court three. And only 18,
:35:11. > :35:19.Pavlik Cheng of Russia, against a from last year, Svetlana Kuznetsova.
:35:20. > :35:27.That Jake Bugg was just too good. Winning 6-3, 6-3. -- Pavlik chunk
:35:28. > :35:40.of. Everyone was happy with her victory.
:35:41. > :35:54.And Lucy Sakharov, another seed has, has gone out. She will face Carla
:35:55. > :36:00.Suarez Navarro or Venus Williams. An earlier on Centre Court with the
:36:01. > :36:05.roof open, Roger Federer went up a couple of gears, as he knew to
:36:06. > :36:14.against Eve Johnson. He was a dangerous opponent today. Federer
:36:15. > :36:15.was just too good. And the Centre Court rises for the great man once
:36:16. > :36:31.again. One day he puts out Novak Djokavic
:36:32. > :36:39.and now another ace and it will prove to be an ace, although it is a
:36:40. > :36:45.Hawk-Eye on this, but it is Sam Querrey, with a victory over Nicolas
:36:46. > :36:53.Mahut. 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. Sam Querrey goes through at the top of the draw.
:36:54. > :36:57.What a tournament he is having. Serena and Svetlana are on Centre
:36:58. > :37:04.Court but later, Andy Murray against this man. And this is where he has
:37:05. > :37:08.been for the afternoon. He is watching Lleyton Hewitt playing
:37:09. > :37:11.doubles match with Jordan Thompson. You wouldn't think he had a fourth
:37:12. > :37:16.round match at Wimbledon coming up in an hour. He has been filming on
:37:17. > :37:20.his phone as well. Maybe he is going to tell Lleyton Hewitt what he did
:37:21. > :37:24.wrong. And take a few pictures. But that is where Nick Kyrgios has been
:37:25. > :37:27.today, looking very relaxed as he heads to Centre Court later on. Andy
:37:28. > :37:34.Murray has been on the practice court with his team. Getting ready
:37:35. > :37:39.for what could be a very tricky match because Nick Kyrgios looked in
:37:40. > :37:42.some form against Feliciano Lopez. And Andy Murray are so used to the
:37:43. > :37:48.Centre Court atmosphere, used to playing here at Wimbledon on the big
:37:49. > :37:57.occasions. That will be our late afternoon entertainment. Next on
:37:58. > :38:01.Centre Court. So all the spectators have to run for cover, although not
:38:02. > :38:06.too many umbrellas around. We said it was only going to be a little
:38:07. > :38:12.shower. But under the roof we go to Serena and Svetlana, and let's
:38:13. > :38:15.rejoin Lindsey Davenport. And Sam Smith. It has been about half an
:38:16. > :38:21.hour since the players were last on court. Slipping and sliding all over
:38:22. > :38:29.the place. Both deciding it was ready to go on. The referee has made
:38:30. > :38:36.a decision about closing the roof and now they can get on with it. And
:38:37. > :38:37.now it is 5-5 in this first set. Advantage to Serena in these perfect
:38:38. > :39:09.conditions. Kuznetsova has to come back out now
:39:10. > :39:14.and restart this match, serving for the set before the rain delay
:39:15. > :39:20.occurred. She did not start well. She was the first to be broken.
:39:21. > :39:25.Svetlana immediately broke back. A couple of breaks of serve. But this
:39:26. > :39:36.is where we are after 50 minutes of play. Very
:39:37. > :39:47.hard to break Serena's serve on grass. Svetlana has been able to do
:39:48. > :39:58.it twice in this first set. Tougher to break her serve on grass indoors.
:39:59. > :40:06.Kuznetsova will have to make a lot of returns and guessed right. So
:40:07. > :40:09.much easier to serve in these perfect conditions. You don't have
:40:10. > :41:03.to worry about the wind, if there is some, clouds. -- if there is sun.
:41:04. > :41:09.Kuznetsova's slice works so well on grass. You could see the ball just
:41:10. > :41:11.slipping into the racket. She has mixed in that shot successfully in
:41:12. > :41:37.this first set. Serena, safely through her service
:41:38. > :41:53.game. Strange to think that Svetlana has
:41:54. > :41:59.never been beyond the quarterfinals here at Wimbledon. If you
:42:00. > :42:04.quarterfinals. You beat one year, back in 2005. That was a long time
:42:05. > :42:10.ago. But with her game, she has not really featured here for about eight
:42:11. > :42:13.years. And not good losses, either. If you look at her record, she has
:42:14. > :42:18.always been more comfortable on a surface where she has more time. She
:42:19. > :42:24.has some extreme grip, and she grew up training on clay in Spain. But
:42:25. > :42:31.she has a game. She has an effective serve. Underrated. And a forehand is
:42:32. > :42:33.huge when she steps in and commits to hitting it. She has played safe
:42:34. > :42:50.so far in this first set. 1000 tonnes of steel and material.
:42:51. > :43:01.And this is why. Serena being broken at 4-4. The players are a lot
:43:02. > :43:04.happier now, as you mentioned. Kuznetsova was rather passive when
:43:05. > :43:05.she had the chance to serve for the set and now she finds herself
:43:06. > :44:06.serving to stay in it. Again, both servers in this game
:44:07. > :44:11.coming in at 92 mph. Kuznetsova is a player that can hit a serve hard,
:44:12. > :44:27.106, 110. Just being very careful with that first serve.
:44:28. > :44:31.And I was a beautiful second serve, able to keep that one above the
:44:32. > :45:42.strike zone. Ultra-aggressive return by Serena,
:45:43. > :45:50.well inside the baseline. She punished that. A 75 mph second serve
:45:51. > :45:52.right in the middle of the box. Very quickly on the restart, Serena has
:45:53. > :46:09.set point. And that is the aggressive tennis
:46:10. > :46:15.that Kuznetsova has to play more often. Much better, much harder
:46:16. > :46:16.serve there, setting up for a forehand that she can really do some
:46:17. > :47:02.damage with. What a difference a roof makes. And
:47:03. > :47:14.it is the defending champion that takes this opening set by 7-5.
:47:15. > :47:20.I almost feel like we could have a little breather now. As an American
:47:21. > :47:24.whose day has not been great on the results front, we can have a little
:47:25. > :47:30.breather because order is restored on Centre Court. We have spoken so
:47:31. > :47:38.much about Serena's serving numbers, second serve points won, no
:47:39. > :47:42.improvement through the course of the tournament but she finds a way
:47:43. > :47:46.to win. And her opponent had an opportunity to serve out the set,
:47:47. > :47:51.and what does Serena do? She is able to get so much better, and play some
:47:52. > :47:56.of her best tennis at the most critical moments of this first set.
:47:57. > :47:59.We had high hopes on July the 4th for the Americans and two have
:48:00. > :48:04.already gone out, including Madison Keys. And as is the custom, it is
:48:05. > :48:35.Serena and Venus left. Apparently it will take over 7000
:48:36. > :48:44.umbrellas to cover the same area, apparently so. That is a good one. I
:48:45. > :48:48.wonder house is -- how many more years we will be saying, still
:48:49. > :48:51.Serena and Venus? Two or three. Venus is the other day said
:48:52. > :48:56.something about 2020 and that was the first I had heard her talking
:48:57. > :49:01.about playing two when she would be possibly 40 years old. And her
:49:02. > :49:22.younger sister is a sense to the good. -- a set.
:49:23. > :49:28.Interesting to see if those numbers get better for Serena on her serve.
:49:29. > :50:06.Easier to win points in doors. You have a great serve.
:50:07. > :50:12.Umpire -- UMPIRE: This Kuznetsova is challenging the call. The ball was
:50:13. > :50:28.called in. Serena's faster server of the match,
:50:29. > :50:44.121 mph. She has had one at 123 in the previous round. She likes this
:50:45. > :50:49.roof. Much, now. This is a little bit strange, Lindsey. Serena always
:50:50. > :50:54.goes around the other side of the net to get to the umpire's chair but
:50:55. > :50:59.recently she has changed it. She is doing the same as everyone else. For
:51:00. > :51:04.a few years she had to shake the umpire's hand first. She used to
:51:05. > :51:08.almost block them out so that she could get to the umpire's hand
:51:09. > :51:13.first, win or lose. And then that changed a couple of years ago. Did
:51:14. > :51:18.she had you out of it a couple of times? I was already done playing.
:51:19. > :51:25.But one time with Maria Sharapova, it was quite hysterical. But it is
:51:26. > :51:29.odd when the top players change up their routines that they have had
:51:30. > :51:57.for so long. I will have to ask about that.
:51:58. > :52:04.I feel like the power of Serena's game, the server or the ground
:52:05. > :52:08.strokes, is too tough to defend against on an indoor court. It
:52:09. > :52:12.always plays fast because of the grass and it is even more perfect
:52:13. > :52:23.for a big hitter in this type of condition.
:52:24. > :52:33.Roger Federer loves it with the roof closed and so does Serena. It is
:52:34. > :52:37.really different. The area is a lot thicker and more humid, and you are
:52:38. > :52:58.able to hit the ball so cleanly. And it just sounds different.
:52:59. > :53:51.Everything getting away from Kuznetsova now.
:53:52. > :54:03.And it is all going away from the Russian now. Five games in a row
:54:04. > :54:08.now, for Serena, who has taken control of this match after a letup
:54:09. > :55:04.midway through that first set. She has pushed the reset button.
:55:05. > :55:10.Looking back, that rhythm is looking in sync again. Ace number 38 for the
:55:11. > :55:25.tournament. We were a little worried about her
:55:26. > :55:35.second serve. Not really needed at this rate. Problem solved. Serving
:55:36. > :55:37.86% right now. That is one way to defend a possible weak point of your
:55:38. > :56:20.game. Don't hit it much. Making it look very easy now. The
:56:21. > :57:00.defending champion in full control. It begs the obvious question, the
:57:01. > :57:03.sooner this roof went over, it is Serena's advantage, so why did she
:57:04. > :57:13.not hold her ground and say, it's fine, because they are playing on
:57:14. > :57:17.one of the other outsides courts -- outside court right now, why did she
:57:18. > :57:21.not try to keep the roof open? She seems to give him too easily. She
:57:22. > :57:25.was demonstrating that it was slick and they should close the roof, but
:57:26. > :57:33.it is just a given. Everybody knows that Serena, with the roof closed,
:57:34. > :57:41.is even more unbeatable, and Kuznetsova... What was she thinking?
:57:42. > :57:45.I don't know. Maybe she really did feel that it would risk on movement
:57:46. > :57:54.and possible injury. But then, you wait it out. Maybe it is a passing
:57:55. > :58:21.shower. And she will play here, at 0- three down in the second set.
:58:22. > :58:30.It has been a totally different Serena from when they left the
:58:31. > :58:49.court. Late in the first set, Kuznetsova was about to serve for
:58:50. > :58:56.the set. Excuse me, at 5-5. And Kuznetsova has gone away here in the
:58:57. > :59:00.second set, I wonder if there is physical and mental tiredness and
:59:01. > :59:16.starting to kick in. She has had a couple of tough matches, three
:59:17. > :59:27.rounds in the previous set. Oh yes. She can do anything. Incredible
:59:28. > :59:35.reaction from Serena, almost apologising to Svetlana. Aluko but
:59:36. > :59:44.will demand. -- a look of the world in.
:59:45. > :59:50.Is Serena goes on to win this match, she will play again tomorrow in the
:59:51. > :59:56.quarterfinal and that will be three days in a row, but that is when it
:59:57. > :59:59.helps to win so up handsomely. And it started yesterday against Annika
:00:00. > :00:01.Beck, she wasted no time in that match. And right now running away
:00:02. > :00:20.with this one. Juggernaut. And it is a double
:00:21. > :00:28.break. How quickly things can change in just 20 minutes. That is how long
:00:29. > :00:32.they have been back out on court. 5-5 they resumed with the roof
:00:33. > :00:39.closed. It is looking like a very bad decision from Svetlana.
:00:40. > :01:11.That was an aggressive second serve for Serena, one of the best she has
:01:12. > :01:19.hit this tournament. Andrew Jarrett is per hour, she went up and after
:01:20. > :01:22.that with conviction. -- 98 mph. Feels better serving in these
:01:23. > :02:39.conditions, with the roof closed. APPLAUSE. Astonishing tennis from
:02:40. > :02:45.Williams. Her mum Oracene has decided Venus needs to skip over --
:02:46. > :02:53.Venus will win, she has skipped over. The box is always full, so it
:02:54. > :02:59.is all right. Also, the two sisters here switch off as well. Venus and
:03:00. > :03:05.Serena always have at least one sister in the stand. On Centre Court
:03:06. > :03:10.here, supporting Serena. Good job they have a big family and I'm glad
:03:11. > :03:16.to see the nephew... He is awake! I do not think he is here, the lights
:03:17. > :03:25.not on. And he Serena clearly not that exciting. She is racing towards
:03:26. > :03:27.the quarterfinals. A fantastic display from the defending champion.
:03:28. > :03:48.She looks unstoppable. They survived a little shower. Good
:03:49. > :03:56.for the goldfish! They do like a drop of rain. It might be some cap
:03:57. > :04:01.in the lily pond. It is a great spot, isn't it? Getting ready for
:04:02. > :04:11.their man, Andy Murray up next on Centre Court. Andy will not be long.
:04:12. > :04:16.I wonder if Nick Kyrgios still out watching the Mixed Doubles. That was
:04:17. > :04:26.amazing! And remember in Miami he had a picture of a stock books on
:04:27. > :04:33.side. His match was at six p.m.. Definitely unconventional. A golfing
:04:34. > :04:39.theme to the rail box, former world number-1 Luke Donald in the centre
:04:40. > :04:41.of your screen. I wonder if he will make the Ryder Cup team this year.
:04:42. > :04:55.Matthew Fitzpatrick, another golfer. But the tennis is the main event on
:04:56. > :05:00.Centre Court. Real concentration needed here, Kuznetsova serving to
:05:01. > :05:27.stay in this round 16 match. There was no reaction! Part of you
:05:28. > :05:31.is very glad you are not out there! Exactly. Happy sitting next to you
:05:32. > :05:40.right now. We are at a safe distance. What a role she has been
:05:41. > :05:52.on since getting down 5-4 in the first. Scary tennis. Just
:05:53. > :05:59.unbelievable. Even Svetlana has a little smile. Six times... Excuse
:06:00. > :06:11.me, six times winner, Serena, just remarkable. And that is another.
:06:12. > :06:14.She has been on a mission. Hardly had time to blink and Williams has
:06:15. > :06:29.three match points. What a champion! She is still simply
:06:30. > :06:45.the best. Cheering macro -- APPLAUSE.
:06:46. > :06:51.Still on track for Wimbledon title number seven, to take a collection
:06:52. > :06:57.of Grand Slams to 22. Four matches down, three to go. And the rest of
:06:58. > :07:02.the family can go over the Court Number One. Lindsay, it was like
:07:03. > :07:10.watching two completely separate matches. The roof open and the roof
:07:11. > :07:14.closed. Yes, absolutely. You go through certain wins in a Grand Slam
:07:15. > :07:18.and that was a statement when. The way Serena played that match and the
:07:19. > :07:22.way she was utterly dominating after they came back with the roof closed.
:07:23. > :07:29.She looked unbeatable in the second part of this match. 43 winners to 14
:07:30. > :07:38.unforced errors, you kidding me? That is amazing! Always great to see
:07:39. > :07:45.Svetlana Kuznetsova. It is not to be this year. Beat by the grand slam
:07:46. > :07:51.champion. It is Serena and she will face another Russian in the next
:07:52. > :08:08.round. A good friend of hers, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
:08:09. > :08:18.So Serena Williams is on track, a great recovery. Kuznetsova had her
:08:19. > :08:26.chance. She served that first set and she could not take it. Very much
:08:27. > :08:32.paying the price. You just wonder if this roof is staying closed for
:08:33. > :08:38.Murray. Whether they will open it or not. A great day on Centre Court.
:08:39. > :08:44.Officially day seven. It is the eighth day of play at the
:08:45. > :08:52.Championships after Sunday, it seems to go in a blur. It might stay
:08:53. > :08:57.closed. So Serena has gone through to the quarterfinals. The defending
:08:58. > :09:04.champion in great form, she wins 7-5, 6-0 and she is here now.
:09:05. > :09:08.Sabrina, the huge congratulations. Svetlana has proved a tough opponent
:09:09. > :09:13.in the past, how satisfying was it to win in that manner? It was really
:09:14. > :09:17.good to win. She has played really well against me in the past and she
:09:18. > :09:22.beat me earlier this year so I knew I had to play really well to
:09:23. > :09:27.witness. There was a short shower and conditions got a little slippy
:09:28. > :09:31.and you took a couple of tumbles, how tricky was it? It was really
:09:32. > :09:39.tricky out there. Even though it was not raining hard, it was on the
:09:40. > :09:45.grass and you can fall really easy. And then it was not about that, it
:09:46. > :09:49.was, should I run for the shot or not? I do not necessarily want to
:09:50. > :09:53.fall! Then it became more of a difficulty because of that. You have
:09:54. > :09:56.gone through to your 12 quarterfinal at Wimbledon so congratulations on
:09:57. > :10:02.that. It does mean you have to play your third game in a row in three
:10:03. > :10:06.days. Does that the you? You are one of the greatest players ever, does
:10:07. > :10:10.that sort of thing, you? No, in order to win a tournament, you have
:10:11. > :10:15.to play quarters and semifinals back-to-back and that is how I
:10:16. > :10:20.thought about it. I thought, you have done this over 70, 80 times, so
:10:21. > :10:24.for me, it is an easy transition. Well played today and good luck for
:10:25. > :10:29.the rest of the tournament. Thank you.
:10:30. > :10:34.Sue Barker: Was a story of two Serena Williams. The first looked
:10:35. > :10:39.really distressed and not happy on Centre Court. Kuznetsova was serving
:10:40. > :10:44.for the first set at 5-4. But that is when you grow one turned it
:10:45. > :10:47.around. She did not lose a game after that -- one. She steam-rolled
:10:48. > :10:52.her way around through the second set. Wonderful performance from her
:10:53. > :10:56.like the true champion she is, finding a way to get through the
:10:57. > :11:01.first set and then her dominance going through the match. Serena has
:11:02. > :11:06.gone through to the quarterfinal. And on Court Number One, this is how
:11:07. > :11:11.older system the nurse who was in a similar situation when her Spanish
:11:12. > :11:17.opponent was serving for the first set -- older sister being us. She
:11:18. > :11:24.has turned it around and is going well against Carla Suarez Navarro.
:11:25. > :11:32.That is on BBC Two. And this is the live score. Carla Suarez Navarro has
:11:33. > :11:39.held her opening serve, so it is deuce on the Williams serve. And on
:11:40. > :11:47.Court Number Two, Milos Raonic had dropped the first set but has taken
:11:48. > :11:53.the third is -- 6-4. That match on the red button. On Centre Court,
:11:54. > :11:58.Roger Federer has gone through, Serena Williams has gone through and
:11:59. > :12:01.now we turn our attention to the match we also looking forward to
:12:02. > :12:15.because next on Centre Court, it is you know who!
:12:16. > :12:27.Come on, Andy! Come on, Andy come one, Andy! Come on, Andy! When you
:12:28. > :12:36.have got a guy like that, either follow him! -- you follow him. I
:12:37. > :12:42.think we will be hearing come on, Andy over the next couple of hours.
:12:43. > :12:46.Roger Taylor is watching and everybody wanting to take their
:12:47. > :12:50.seeds for this match. We are not sitting but John McEnroe is here.
:12:51. > :12:55.Interesting match. This is the most interesting round of 16 match. Nick
:12:56. > :13:03.Kyrgios was one man I thought before the match could win it. With Novak
:13:04. > :13:06.Djokovic losing, a lot of players thinking they have a shot. Nick
:13:07. > :13:11.Kyrgios is a grand slam winner in the future. He is not there yet. He
:13:12. > :13:15.doesn't have a complete game at this stage in his career and is not
:13:16. > :13:19.mentally tough enough for the guy I feel is playing better than anybody
:13:20. > :13:26.in the tournament so far. So a multiple grand slam winner, but he
:13:27. > :13:33.has an extraordinary story and he is colourful on and off court. Lee
:13:34. > :13:40.McKenzie his story. With Nick Kyrgios, everybody knows
:13:41. > :13:45.what to expect, right? You are kidding me! Flashes of brilliance.
:13:46. > :13:51.That is impossible! Inspires tennis that gets fans on the edge of their
:13:52. > :13:55.seeds! Look at that, inspiration! He is an entertainer but part of the
:13:56. > :13:59.show is the Australian's volatility. No way! His misdemeanours on
:14:00. > :14:05.numerous but there is a fine line between passion and petulance. I try
:14:06. > :14:10.and find that balance and when I do, I play my best tennis. There will be
:14:11. > :14:14.times I'm negative and showing a lot of emotion and times I really enjoy
:14:15. > :14:17.myself and have a lot of fun. It is tough to find that balance
:14:18. > :14:22.sometimes. It he was accused of not trying by the crowd and he was
:14:23. > :14:26.viewed in the match against Greece Clark -- against Richard Gasquet
:14:27. > :14:31.here. A public falling out against Stan Wawrinka after misplaced as
:14:32. > :14:36.comments was a low point is year and last point -- last month, he pulled
:14:37. > :14:39.out of the Rio games after falling out with the Australian Olympic
:14:40. > :14:43.Committee. Since bursting onto the scene, he has grabbed the attention
:14:44. > :14:50.of the media but his opponent today feels it is not always justified.
:14:51. > :14:53.Just constantly trying to win him up the whole time and it is not fair on
:14:54. > :15:04.him. What did I say on the umpire today is, have you said a swear word
:15:05. > :15:08.in your life? It happens a lot where it doesn't seem like he has done
:15:09. > :15:16.much in comparison to other players and he gets the questions about it.
:15:17. > :15:19.Next question, please. Kyrgios splits opinion in the tennis
:15:20. > :15:25.fraternity and the wider sporting world. I watch him and times and I
:15:26. > :15:29.have felt every one of those emotions that he goes through. He is
:15:30. > :15:34.a young player and when you come out on the scene and you get success,
:15:35. > :15:38.all you think about is doing the best you can possibly do, I'm going
:15:39. > :15:43.to win. And when commentators like myself give opinions on you, you
:15:44. > :15:48.cannot understand people wanting to be negative and looking into your
:15:49. > :15:53.soul and terror and you apart. It is great having characters. I accept
:15:54. > :15:59.they have to do it their own way. It is relatively not very Australian,
:16:00. > :16:02.we are struggling to get our head around that attitude and approach to
:16:03. > :16:07.the sport. He is incredibly gifted and the sky is the limit if he has
:16:08. > :16:12.the application and the work limit but it is hard to put an old head on
:16:13. > :16:15.young shoulders. Are we seeing a new side is the Nick Kyrgios at
:16:16. > :16:21.Wimbledon this year, a little more true -- mature perhaps? It is
:16:22. > :16:25.ridiculous! The discussion with the umpire at match point, it you did
:16:26. > :16:30.not rise to it, is that something you have tried to work on? Yes, but
:16:31. > :16:33.at the same time, it is understandable. You want me once
:16:34. > :16:37.already about the time I was taking between points and I would have gone
:16:38. > :16:44.over by a couple of seconds. They are the rules so I cannot get angry.
:16:45. > :16:49.One of the most watchable players. Sue Barker: I'm joined by another
:16:50. > :16:56.grand slam champion Pat --. He dominates the headlines down on
:16:57. > :17:00.Ashdown under. Yes, he and Bernard Tomic, take up exclusively the
:17:01. > :17:05.tennis headlines in Australia. And the rest of the world as well. From
:17:06. > :17:10.LA, a friend of mine says, not sure I like this guy but I cannot turn
:17:11. > :17:15.off the TV when he plays. It is like that. You are not sure what is going
:17:16. > :17:19.to happen, unbelievably talented and he has the shots and firepower. You
:17:20. > :17:24.think this guy should be winning a grand slam at some stage. Yet he
:17:25. > :17:29.implodes a lot. It is always exciting to see what happens. I
:17:30. > :17:34.would nominate a guy like this to coach him. He is at this stage, I
:17:35. > :17:38.predict Andy Murray will beat him today, he is not ready to take the
:17:39. > :17:43.next step. He has got everything but he doesn't know when to apply it and
:17:44. > :17:48.he doesn't take advantage when he plays of knowing when to come to the
:17:49. > :17:53.net. And this guy knew a couple of things about attacking and he knows
:17:54. > :18:00.about getting volatile at times! Not as much as me! And anyway, he is at
:18:01. > :18:03.that stage where I think it would be really a smart idea after this
:18:04. > :18:08.tournament to hire somebody full-time. Whether it is pat or not,
:18:09. > :18:17.that is a great treasure, not sure if you are available? I do not know
:18:18. > :18:20.if he wants that. I took him away to the junior Davis Cup competition and
:18:21. > :18:26.for me, he was clearly the most talented player. He did what we have
:18:27. > :18:28.seen, he exploded and he would regroup and play unbelievable
:18:29. > :18:33.tennis, shots I have never seen in my life, he was hitting as a
:18:34. > :18:39.16-year-old. I said, listen, if you need help. He said, yes, maybe I
:18:40. > :18:43.would like your help. The captain of tennis Australia said he doesn't
:18:44. > :18:49.really want help, be careful of stepping in in this position. I'm
:18:50. > :18:53.not sure. And friends of mine wanted me off and I thought that was a bit
:18:54. > :18:58.strange. They are right, he likes to do things his own way. We see great
:18:59. > :19:02.champions, they like to do things that own way. Andre Agassi used to
:19:03. > :19:06.do crazy things and fly here and play another tournament. You do not
:19:07. > :19:11.want to take that away from the kid, not that I would if I was working
:19:12. > :19:16.with him. He also does need to put a lid on it sometimes. And he is not
:19:17. > :19:21.winning a lot of friends in the locker room although he is a very
:19:22. > :19:24.nice kid. It is a balancing situation. He is improving all the
:19:25. > :19:30.time and getting better every year and winning tournaments now. Good
:19:31. > :19:34.point, actually. Yes, one of his friends in the locker room is Andy
:19:35. > :19:39.Murray and they get on well. Talk about preparation for a fourth-round
:19:40. > :19:45.match, do get focused and spends time with your team? Nick Kyrgios,
:19:46. > :19:48.less than two hours before, he is out with the Lleyton Hewitt family
:19:49. > :19:54.Court 18 watching late Hewitt claimed a doubles match. This is
:19:55. > :19:58.unusual preparation for a match, I would say that! Everybody has a
:19:59. > :20:04.method is to keep loose. I try to consult and coach at work with Milos
:20:05. > :20:10.Raonic who is struggling out now on Court Number Two. He was extremely
:20:11. > :20:14.wound up before he played and it showed in his play early on. How'd
:20:15. > :20:23.you get yourself lose for a situation where you see a door wide
:20:24. > :20:26.open? And bullied bubble upside. Kyrgios will be the talk of the town
:20:27. > :20:30.if he beats Andy Murray who is playing better than anybody and is
:20:31. > :20:34.favourite to win there is so this is an incredible opportunity for a lot
:20:35. > :20:39.of other players when Novak Djokovic losers. It is difficult not to get
:20:40. > :20:44.wound up. And Lleyton Hewitt has been helping and he is the Davis Cup
:20:45. > :20:47.captain as well. Talking a lot about Nick and now about Andy, this is the
:20:48. > :21:14.story of his championship so far. Job done for Andy Murray. In
:21:15. > :21:37.straight sets. He is a master at it and even by his
:21:38. > :21:43.standards, that was something special. Six games in a row now for
:21:44. > :21:55.Murray. A tour de force from Andy Murray.
:21:56. > :22:04.What a wonderful tan is rally, Murray coming out on top.
:22:05. > :22:15.Unbelievable. -- tennis rally. Utterly brilliant! Smoothly through
:22:16. > :22:19.the first week. Well, the players are on their way
:22:20. > :22:25.for this match. Andy has got better with each match and he looked good
:22:26. > :22:29.against John Millman. He has looked good but the competition is about to
:22:30. > :22:33.get a lot tougher. Kyrgios can take the racket out of your hands with
:22:34. > :22:39.his serve and his game is so unpredictable. I know Murray has
:22:40. > :22:42.never been in a situation for the Monday of the second week of the
:22:43. > :22:48.grand slam is the favourite to win the tournament. It is tough to get
:22:49. > :22:54.better betting odds than Federer, Rafael Nadal and Carla Suarez
:22:55. > :22:58.Navarro -- and Novak Djokovic. Kyrgios can swing for defences and
:22:59. > :23:03.can do his thing but Andy Murray is so well prepared and tough to beat
:23:04. > :23:07.in the best-of-7 wide set matches. His concentration is generally
:23:08. > :23:09.better than that of Kyrgios and the lapses he has, you walked about and
:23:10. > :23:15.he loses it for a couple of minutes, and when you play the best of the
:23:16. > :23:21.best, that is a problem. He is attacking a lot and he is being
:23:22. > :23:25.aggressive which is what Ivan Lendl has wanted. He has gone for his
:23:26. > :23:28.backhand a lot and not messing around and he produced 12 on
:23:29. > :23:33.unforced errors on the backhand in the first couple of sets. At the end
:23:34. > :23:37.of the second coming he played well and John Millman really took it to
:23:38. > :23:42.him. We can see the players coming on here. A big cheer!
:23:43. > :24:01.APPLAUSE. That is a great atmosphere.
:24:02. > :24:05.Everybody standing. They know how important this match is and how
:24:06. > :24:10.entertaining it could be. As John said, it is another step up from
:24:11. > :24:15.John Millman who is a good player who has worked his way through the
:24:16. > :24:21.rankings, but Nick has the firepower and he will keep Andy off-balance.
:24:22. > :24:26.John Millman, straight up the net, hits the ball well, good service,
:24:27. > :24:30.but you do not know what is coming. This is a big match and I watched
:24:31. > :24:33.the US Open they played last year and I have never seen two players
:24:34. > :24:38.will wound up and more miserable on the court than these two! Screaming
:24:39. > :24:42.at themselves constantly. I think it is a good thing for Nick to be on
:24:43. > :24:46.Centre Court because he will have the mind himself and that is a good
:24:47. > :24:52.thing if he keeps a lid on it and keeps the focus going, he cannot
:24:53. > :24:59.throw balls and half-hearted games. The interesting thing is all of a
:25:00. > :25:02.sudden, the pressure is on Andy. Absolutely, it is a different game
:25:03. > :25:10.now, everybody talking about it. Nick has only had $6,500 worth of
:25:11. > :25:14.fines, on his best behaviour here! At sounds good to me! He has a way
:25:15. > :25:20.to go to catch up to some players but he is getting there! He is
:25:21. > :25:23.taking it seriously and is a dangerous player. He is one of the
:25:24. > :25:28.top five, six contenders of this tournament. The biggest improvement
:25:29. > :25:34.for me is his backhand which is so much better than it was a year ago.
:25:35. > :25:38.You can use it as a weapon. That she can use it as a weapon and he
:25:39. > :25:43.redirects like Murray. That is another part of his game that keeps
:25:44. > :25:47.you uncertain. You cannot get a feel for what he can do. He hits the
:25:48. > :25:55.backhand and he sit across court. But I saw him play Milos Raonic at
:25:56. > :26:00.Queen's and he puts you in serious trouble but he lets you back in the
:26:01. > :26:05.point two or three times. And Murray is such a good athlete that he
:26:06. > :26:10.cannot afford to do that against him because he will lose a lot of those
:26:11. > :26:15.points. Murray moves so well, Pat. I think he is in the form of his life.
:26:16. > :26:20.It is whether he can keep it together. Under these circumstances.
:26:21. > :26:24.He is playing better than 2013. He had a great clay-court season and is
:26:25. > :26:29.moving well, serving big. The players in the locker room had
:26:30. > :26:32.picked out quickly break point down, Andy goes straight down the middle,
:26:33. > :26:38.that is his favourite serve. He looks towards that. So they cover
:26:39. > :26:45.some of this new and bigger serving of Murray. But by and large, he is
:26:46. > :26:51.playing fantastic tennis. It is good to see Ivan... Not good for the
:26:52. > :26:57.opponents. And not for John! Not of us likes to see that. We have to put
:26:58. > :27:01.up with the jokes. That is one reason why you try to increase your
:27:02. > :27:12.ranking because the higher you go, the less you have to listen to it!
:27:13. > :27:18.But he did a great job. Andy 12 Grand Slams. There is more
:27:19. > :27:23.adrenaline and more belief from Murray and he is more offensive off
:27:24. > :27:28.the return, coming to the net more and that is the final piece of the
:27:29. > :27:31.puzzle for Andy Murray to win more Grand Slams is his willingness to
:27:32. > :27:36.move forward. Novak Djokovic was able to do that, Roger has been
:27:37. > :27:43.trying and is very close to winning a major. It is key for Murray and
:27:44. > :27:50.also, Kyrgios. Ivan Lendl let Murray believe he could win the grand slam
:27:51. > :27:54.and he got so close. Yes, and for me, it is always about Andy's mental
:27:55. > :28:00.application. I have said it time and again. His emotional management on
:28:01. > :28:04.court. We all do it, that is the way it is. You have ups and downs in a
:28:05. > :28:10.match and it is keeping that steady and balanced. Talking to Ivan after
:28:11. > :28:15.these guys broke up, without saying exactly what he said, he said that
:28:16. > :28:20.Andy was not listening to him so what was the point being there? Andy
:28:21. > :28:24.has improved without him but the missing link is the mental thing and
:28:25. > :28:30.that has clicked back. It may not click back instantly, but it
:28:31. > :28:33.certainly has improved in a couple of weeks. Everybody is joining
:28:34. > :28:36.Wimbledon here, it is packed on Henman Hill and this is the Mac
:28:37. > :28:42.everybody has been talking about. When the draw was made, we thought
:28:43. > :28:46.Kyrgios, this tempestuous talent, against Murray. Even bigger
:28:47. > :28:50.consequences with Novak Djokovic out because Andy is favourite to win the
:28:51. > :28:53.title and with that comes the expectation and the pressure. So
:28:54. > :28:57.they will be enjoying themselves on Henman Hill. We talked about the
:28:58. > :29:03.firepower of Kyrgios and the serve is also a weapon. The serve is
:29:04. > :29:09.really good and like Roger Federer, at times, he plays so fast. So you
:29:10. > :29:13.find yourself, you look up and he is about the serve and you do not get a
:29:14. > :29:17.terms to get set and if he gets on a roll, it happened so quickly and he
:29:18. > :29:21.can afford to take more chances off the return. But believe it or not,
:29:22. > :29:27.to me, the fact he has flowed himself down at times on bigger
:29:28. > :29:31.occasions, at the end of games, that has helped. Because sometimes, he
:29:32. > :29:36.beat himself when he went too fast. Now he is starting to get that you
:29:37. > :29:40.can sometimes think about it and go, let me think, what should I do here?
:29:41. > :29:45.And he comes up with something good. Andy has been quiet in the
:29:46. > :29:48.Championships would Nick has been ranting at his entourage! Yes, not
:29:49. > :29:54.sure how they had put up with that, to be honest. And his brother was
:29:55. > :29:58.sent away in the French Open. He kicked him out. He wanted his father
:29:59. > :30:03.and sister to stand up and cheer when he won the points. Funny, some
:30:04. > :30:07.players will be like that. You do not want to take all that away from
:30:08. > :30:11.his character but that could be a reason he doesn't have a top name
:30:12. > :30:16.coach because they might not put up with that. His firepower is the
:30:17. > :30:20.serve and deserved 35 aces to beat Rafael Nadal a couple of years ago
:30:21. > :30:24.in the second round. I would expect him to serve about the same and I
:30:25. > :30:29.think Andy can get his racket on so many balls. Look for those aces down
:30:30. > :30:42.the middle of the court on the lower part of the net. So you think a
:30:43. > :30:47.coach would say no? Murray seems to have got better, but it together.
:30:48. > :30:48.Nick said he would a lot from winning the first set against Andy
:30:49. > :31:02.in the Grand Slams at the US I think it will be really tight and
:31:03. > :31:06.I think Murray will win. At the end of the day, if he shoots 35 aces,
:31:07. > :31:15.what are you going to do? That will make Andy nervous. He could really
:31:16. > :31:19.trouble and the's second serve. There will be big shots but Murray
:31:20. > :31:25.is a legend, the best player in the tournament now. He is the best
:31:26. > :31:31.player at scrambling Ishant and making a player play an extra shot.
:31:32. > :31:34.He really is fantastic at it. Finally, we know what to expect from
:31:35. > :31:41.Andy but I think we will learn more from Nick Kyrgios. He cannot afford
:31:42. > :31:49.to give away points. Let's see what happens. This is a tremendous upside
:31:50. > :31:53.for him. John McEnroe is on his way to the commentary box and we are
:31:54. > :31:57.ready for this match. Such an busy day on this magic Monday with all
:31:58. > :32:02.fourth-round matches being played. Roger Federer has gone through, as
:32:03. > :32:08.has Serena Williams. But all eyes on Centre Court. World number two, Andy
:32:09. > :32:17.Murray, up against the talented Australian, Nick Kyrgios.
:32:18. > :32:22.This is your Monday evening entertainment for the next three or
:32:23. > :32:34.four hours, however long it might be. Roger Federer may have equal
:32:35. > :32:38.Jimmy Connors' record on Wimbledon quarterfinals but the experts say
:32:39. > :32:46.that this year's Wijnaldum is Andy Murray's Toulouse. Will he be out,
:32:47. > :32:50.bleary eyed, playing with his daughter after a late-night
:32:51. > :32:59.champions dinner? On the other side of the net, the mantle of Superbrat
:33:00. > :33:05.has laid unclaimed for four decades. I just set down. It is easily
:33:06. > :33:12.claimed by Nick Kyrgios, a regular recipient of code violations and the
:33:13. > :33:18.use of inappropriate language. But he is going to be a big fixture for
:33:19. > :33:21.the next decade. Anyway, here we go. With the most eagerly anticipated
:33:22. > :33:57.confrontation of Wimbledon 2016 so far.
:33:58. > :34:06.How important is it for Nick Kyrgios to get off to a good start in this
:34:07. > :34:10.match? I think it is important because he has never beaten Murray
:34:11. > :34:14.and he needs to believe. The crowd will be with him. He needs to
:34:15. > :34:21.entertain, but he needs to compete harder than he ever has. The
:34:22. > :34:28.instinct might be that Killie us's server is the biggest one on court
:34:29. > :34:34.but Andy Murray has served 23 aces so far in this tournament. --
:34:35. > :34:38.Kyrgios's server is the biggest one on court. Kyrgios has served 79 aces
:34:39. > :35:01.so far. I think that is an example of what I
:35:02. > :35:06.was talking about. Pursue in a ball that he could've taken in the air.
:35:07. > :35:13.Making things difficult for himself. His backhand is so much better than
:35:14. > :35:48.it was a year ago. Pushing forward, taking time away from Murray.
:35:49. > :35:54.Those balls could not go much lower over the net without going in the
:35:55. > :36:02.net. They are goading each other to go big. Murray missed the two
:36:03. > :36:04.hander. UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your
:36:05. > :36:51.enthusiasm until after the point, thank you.
:36:52. > :37:01.An opportunity for Kyrgios to have a nice look at a second serve. He
:37:02. > :37:13.could not be too happy with that return.
:37:14. > :37:18.We could have a lot of long rallies in this match but we are going to
:37:19. > :37:23.have a lot of short ones as well. Dustin Brown against Kyrgios a few
:37:24. > :37:31.days ago... It was a five set match and the longest rally in the entire
:37:32. > :37:39.game was six shots. He is an old school serve-volley. He just makes
:37:40. > :37:44.things happen in a hurry. Kyrgios is someone who will be top ten in six
:37:45. > :37:49.months or less if he competes every point. That is what it boils down
:37:50. > :37:58.to. Why is he reticence to go for it? I don't know. -- why is he
:37:59. > :37:59.reticence to go forward. He is quick, I can see no reason for him
:38:00. > :38:33.not to move forward. Murray will be happy with that. It
:38:34. > :38:37.is a beautiful return. You could see that he had a hit up. Murray is the
:38:38. > :38:39.one who is starting to become more aggressive and more willing to move
:38:40. > :38:58.forward. Beautifully engineered until the
:38:59. > :39:05.final piece of the jigsaw from Andy Murray there. Kyrgios is pretty
:39:06. > :39:14.quick. He did about as well as he could under the circumstances.
:39:15. > :39:20.That is a lovely server. Taking a little bit of extra time helps him a
:39:21. > :39:40.lot, I think. I am aware that it is our past five
:39:41. > :39:43.on Monday evening, and a lot of you will just come in from school or
:39:44. > :39:47.work, and might not have actually seen Nick Kyrgios play before. You
:39:48. > :39:49.will see a lot more service like that over the course of the next
:39:50. > :40:14.couple of hours. And you are going to see Murray, as
:40:15. > :40:25.he did there, for Simeon, goading him in. -- force him in. Curiosity
:40:26. > :40:34.or not very comfortable up at the net. -- Kyrgios is still not very
:40:35. > :40:44.comfortable. But emphatic serving from Kyrgios to square early on. And
:40:45. > :40:48.John is keeping one eye on events on Court Number Two because his charge,
:40:49. > :40:55.do we call him a charge? I am not sure what we call him but he is
:40:56. > :40:59.someone who I thought... Milos Raonic. I thought he could win the
:41:00. > :41:04.tournament but he has his hands full. He was two sets down against
:41:05. > :41:10.David Goffin but he has squared things up at two all. UMPIRE: Mr
:41:11. > :41:19.Kyrgios is challenging the call. The ball was called in.
:41:20. > :41:45.Kyrgios has decided to don the headband. He has a Mohawk haircut.
:41:46. > :41:52.It does not see Mikey really needs it in this weather. -- it does not
:41:53. > :41:57.seem like he really needs it in this weather.
:41:58. > :42:15.There may be a financial incentive. I thought that.
:42:16. > :42:24.Bullinger Roger Federer there. Just charging forward. -- pulling a Roger
:42:25. > :42:31.Federer. Not a bad idea against Murray's server. He has a beautiful
:42:32. > :42:34.feel with those hands. I would like to see Kyrgios take serves and
:42:35. > :42:45.coming more often. He would be even more dangerous. The perceived wisdom
:42:46. > :42:50.has always been that Murray's second serve is gettable. But is it less so
:42:51. > :42:54.now? I think it has got better and it is clearly something he is very
:42:55. > :43:04.aware of, looking to mix it up and put a little more on it.
:43:05. > :43:20.We keep talking about serving but serving and returning are the two
:43:21. > :43:28.key elements of the game. If you look at Kyrgios's returning, what do
:43:29. > :43:32.you think he needs to do and how can he improve on that as a way of
:43:33. > :43:44.getting at the best servers? I think he's doing a better job. His back
:43:45. > :43:51.and -- back and along while ago has improved. It is something that to
:43:52. > :43:57.some degree you are born with. I don't know with Kyrgios, if it is
:43:58. > :44:03.going to happen as easily as he thinks. So this is an example where
:44:04. > :44:07.if he ever decides to get a coach, if he realises that he wants to be
:44:08. > :44:14.the best player in the world, it is just not going to happen for him.
:44:15. > :44:19.Whether he gets a coach or not, I still think he could be a top ten
:44:20. > :44:25.player, but a multiple Grand Slam player, he needs to be more
:44:26. > :44:28.disciplined with his approach to the sport. The Royal Box today full of
:44:29. > :44:40.comedians, golfers and rugby players. Jack Nicklaus came onto
:44:41. > :44:47.ESPN, the Golden Bay, and he had three grass courts at his house. A
:44:48. > :44:53.huge tennis fan. I'm not sure why he needs three but he can afford them.
:44:54. > :44:59.He should stage a tournament. He should do. That is a good idea. The
:45:00. > :45:12.Golden Bay open. It has a ring to it. -- Kyrgios. I think that would
:45:13. > :45:33.work in Florida in June. They get good weather.
:45:34. > :45:39.Murray taking pace off the ball, and then really reading into it. That
:45:40. > :45:50.makes that forehand seem like it is coming even quicker. Tough to deal
:45:51. > :45:59.with. A lovely touch from the big man. Is that variation in pace at
:46:00. > :46:02.the hardest thing? You watch a lot of players and their means speed is
:46:03. > :46:06.pretty similar, from the start of the match until the end, but he
:46:07. > :46:10.varies it so much you are not quite sure whether it is going to be a
:46:11. > :46:22.fast one, a slow one, or how to respond to it. Absolutely. Dead on.
:46:23. > :46:30.Serve and volley. Good recognition by Nick when he saw Murray go to the
:46:31. > :46:34.one hand. You have to sprint forward, whoever you are. Who were
:46:35. > :46:43.you play, for that matter, it is a good move. -- whoever you play.
:46:44. > :46:53.I don't know how you say it in Cricket but he has a live armour.
:46:54. > :47:00.There are some fast ball is up in the box. 134 mph, that is a spinner
:47:01. > :47:06.anyway. Phil Tufnell, I don't think he ever ball the ball at 134 mph but
:47:07. > :47:15.anyway. But at that speed, it is probably not coming back. I should
:47:16. > :47:18.say that yesterday he was serving second serves at 129 mph. Second
:47:19. > :47:41.serves. Kyrgios moves very well for a guy at
:47:42. > :48:01.six feet two, two and a half. He is good at taking the pace of.
:48:02. > :48:18.UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. Right baseline. Ball is called
:48:19. > :48:44.out. The first test for Hawk-Eye. A popular hometown decision.
:48:45. > :48:59.The rapier and the bludgeon and the simplest touch from Kerry -- Kyrgios
:49:00. > :49:03.there. I know that Nick appreciates Andy a lot, but you are looking at a
:49:04. > :49:16.guy, if he gets his act together, to me he will win multiple Grand Slams.
:49:17. > :49:28.Some players seem 21 when they are 21. Nick Kyrgios somehow seems a lot
:49:29. > :49:35.older already. He looks older. He has not been acting that way enough.
:49:36. > :49:44.He has been undisciplined at times. Playing matches against guys this
:49:45. > :49:54.good, especially in the best of five set matches. I suppose there is a
:49:55. > :49:57.feeling about this match that if it went to five sets, it would be a war
:49:58. > :50:05.of attrition and Murray would probably win. But actually Kyrgios
:50:06. > :51:00.has won his last 45 set matches so he is prepared to grind it as well.
:51:01. > :51:09.That is going to be a key shot for Murray in this match. A two and up
:51:10. > :51:14.the line, forcing Kyrgios to go for a low percentage forehand on the
:51:15. > :51:19.run. He can hit it on the run. But he has to do something theatrical.
:51:20. > :51:25.He has to entertain, as opposed to what he needs to do to get back in
:51:26. > :51:32.the point. It is a very fine line. He is an excellent player already,
:51:33. > :51:34.make no mistake. In the media, we enjoy giving people labels and
:51:35. > :51:39.everybody loves creating this bad boy image to surround him, but if
:51:40. > :51:43.there was going to be a turning point, how much do you think that
:51:44. > :51:49.match point yesterday against Lopez, when he was given a time violation
:51:50. > :51:52.at match point, and perhaps even six months ago he might have gone
:51:53. > :51:57.ballistic about that, but he just took it and got on with the game,
:51:58. > :52:00.winning the point and the match. Well, first of all, I am surprised
:52:01. > :52:06.that he was given a time violation for taking too long. Because he is
:52:07. > :52:11.one of the quickest guys. Without question. I thought that was a lame
:52:12. > :52:13.call by the umpire. The guy was sitting there waiting for his
:52:14. > :52:18.opponent after time. And it was match point. At any rate, he handled
:52:19. > :52:33.it well. I knew I was working with you John
:52:34. > :52:36.today, and I would've loved to have been alongside you want court three
:52:37. > :52:42.earlier today, watching the most fantastic women's match between
:52:43. > :52:50.Radwanska and Cibulkova. On the penultimate point of the match,
:52:51. > :53:03.Cibulkova was given a time violation and adopt a serve. -- docked a
:53:04. > :53:11.serve. She went mildly ballistic. And that is a beautiful shot. I
:53:12. > :53:14.don't think there is a great deal of difference speed wise between first
:53:15. > :53:20.and second serves, but good for her. She is a great competitor. This
:53:21. > :53:49.shot, Kyrgios positioning himself to close to the net.
:53:50. > :53:57.The first game that anyone has had the slightest sniff of a break.
:53:58. > :53:59.Listening to Tim Henman earlier on today, he was predicting a lot of
:54:00. > :54:08.tie-breaks in this match. And if it comes to a tie-break,
:54:09. > :54:33.weapons like that will help. An excellent effort by Nick Kyrgios
:54:34. > :54:49.with some solid serving. He likes to hit the back and flat
:54:50. > :55:36.for the most part but he really comes over that forehand.
:55:37. > :55:46.These guys that come out of the box doing what they need to do, good
:55:47. > :55:50.serving so far. I set in on Roger Federer's press conference and he
:55:51. > :55:55.says it does not actually make any difference at all. But it probably
:55:56. > :56:08.does, in terms of not being in the draw any more. You have got to be
:56:09. > :56:14.kidding me. How much, now, is everybody, not just Roger and Andy,
:56:15. > :56:17.but maybe the guys on the fringes, if you like, Milos Raonic and
:56:18. > :56:19.Kyrgios, how much are they thinking that the door might be slightly more
:56:20. > :56:36.open than it was before? He tried the head fake but it did
:56:37. > :56:43.not work. But you cannot get ahead of yourself. The proverbial one
:56:44. > :56:47.match at a time is true. I congratulate a guy like Sam Querrey,
:56:48. > :56:52.who has the win of his life and then comes back and is able to beat
:56:53. > :56:57.Nicolas Mahut at pretty convincingly. That is hard to do
:56:58. > :57:03.because the let down is inevitable. But the opportunity on that top half
:57:04. > :57:07.of the draw? Roger Federer's eyes lit up when he saw Djokovic go out.
:57:08. > :57:11.He would have won a major last year, the last couple of years, I can
:57:12. > :57:15.assure you, if Djokovic was not there. His knees started to feel a
:57:16. > :57:23.whole lot better, I have news for you. He has moved the best I've seen
:57:24. > :57:27.him since the surgery. The dust is coming off. I heard Richard Krajicek
:57:28. > :57:31.and Pat Cash saying that he was playing almost as well now as he was
:57:32. > :57:40.12 months ago. This is a guy who has won it seven times. This is an
:57:41. > :57:43.incredible opportunity. Marin Cilic, congratulations to him, but that is
:57:44. > :57:52.going to be a battle. Cilic is ready. This is the one that we all
:57:53. > :57:58.looked at. And he walked the US Open last year, didn't he? The year
:57:59. > :58:34.before. He dominated Federer. Easily. He knows he can do it now.
:58:35. > :58:42.I'm not sure who was the cat and he was the Maoists there at Murray was
:58:43. > :58:52.the cat at the end. -- and who was the mouse. He seemed unwilling to
:58:53. > :59:13.move forward, but he did not do too much damage with the forehand.
:59:14. > :59:27.That is just a phenomenal shot. The first fist bump of the match. He is
:59:28. > :59:33.better inside the baseline. He has got Kyrgios in trouble. We have not
:59:34. > :59:35.had a single break point in this match so far, but Murray is looking
:59:36. > :00:22.at one at the moment. Anything you can do. I like the fact
:00:23. > :00:26.that Kyrgios is not rushing. He is measuring his thought process. This
:00:27. > :00:29.is big for him. To get some belief. He has not beaten Murray ever. He
:00:30. > :00:47.has barely won a set. That is a good job, from 0-30. A
:00:48. > :00:54.good challenge by Murray. That is the hardest serve I think Kyrgios
:00:55. > :01:02.has hit. He is fired up. More in hope than expectation, Murray. So
:01:03. > :01:13.from 0-30 to 30-40 one point, four each. That took some of the weight
:01:14. > :01:19.from that but still 124 mph. And even for perhaps the greatest return
:01:20. > :01:25.of serve in the game, one of the best two anyway. I would say the
:01:26. > :01:50.second. Yes, that was beyond his reach.
:01:51. > :02:06.Beautiful shot. That, to me, is that a smart way for Kyrgios to play, he
:02:07. > :02:14.has good hands with that backend. I like it a lot now. Take it early.
:02:15. > :02:22.Put some serious pressure on Murray. -- backhand.
:02:23. > :03:35.That is majestic from Murray. Starting to see now why players and
:03:36. > :03:39.fans of the sport anticipated this match so much. Starting to play some
:03:40. > :04:03.really excellent tennis. Murray hesitated on that ball, that
:04:04. > :04:11.is the type of ball he needs to move in on and push forward. You would
:04:12. > :05:00.never know what Ivan Lendl was thinking! You could guess!
:05:01. > :05:11.Go for it. You often don't need commentators when Kyrgios is
:05:12. > :05:39.playing. He provides all we need. Well, a clean hit from Murray off
:05:40. > :05:48.what looked a very long second serve, but it was in.
:05:49. > :05:55.Martina Navratilova is turning 60 this year. She is an inspiration and
:05:56. > :06:01.if I was an inspiration to her, she has certainly been one to me.
:06:02. > :06:04.Defecting to America, she transformed the sport. Everybody has
:06:05. > :06:11.a lucky break in life, she was my lucky break. Martina forever will be
:06:12. > :06:15.the best singles, Mixed Doubles they are ever. An all-round athlete.
:06:16. > :06:25.Really it without being robotic and would fully joyous when she won. A
:06:26. > :06:34.pioneer, activist, icon. - me Martina is tonight at 10:45pm.
:06:35. > :06:37.11:40pm in Wales. Growing up in war-torn Czechoslovakia to becoming
:06:38. > :06:40.a great champion, that is the night, the life of Martina Navratilova. --
:06:41. > :06:56.tonight. COMMENTARY: The influence on John
:06:57. > :07:01.McEnroe extends far and wide. He doesn't do anything without John's
:07:02. > :07:09.say so. He was two sets down and now two apiece and a break up in the
:07:10. > :07:16.fair. You have earned your money. Had some work to do, Todmorden --
:07:17. > :07:28.Todd Martin saw him. It ain't over till it's over.
:07:29. > :07:34.Logie Baird, was it? That was one of his phrases. It is getting late
:07:35. > :07:59.early, that was another. A slight error of judgment from
:08:00. > :08:05.Kyrgios. We all have those. He is shaking his head. Did I do this, did
:08:06. > :08:22.I do that? Used to be a football manager in
:08:23. > :08:27.this country related and his phrase was, if we were still top of the
:08:28. > :08:27.table on January the 1st, we would have thought Christmas had come
:08:28. > :08:43.early. It sounds like him. Only four aces from Kyrgios, but a
:08:44. > :09:10.lot of unreturnable serves. Kyrgios so far has composed himself
:09:11. > :09:18.well and is playing well. He has put pressure on Andy Murray as expected.
:09:19. > :09:23.It is close early on. And the upside for Kyrgios is so big for him. The
:09:24. > :09:29.pressure on him now, the favourite, Murray. So this could be interesting
:09:30. > :09:31.to see how he handles this pressure. The favourite of the tournament,
:09:32. > :09:47.leaving forward here. -- think. Could you say that Andy Murray has
:09:48. > :09:51.never been on the second Monday of a Grand Slam the favourite to win
:09:52. > :10:03.this? Yes, ever. This is all new territory for him. It is pressure,
:10:04. > :10:04.but it is a tremendously good feeling. He has worked hard to get
:10:05. > :10:18.here. And after what happened... I expect
:10:19. > :10:31.he would appreciate it a lot more right about now.
:10:32. > :10:45.Iceland, in the end, got their comeuppance. Beautifully worked. And
:10:46. > :10:51.finished off as well. You certainly wonder why he doesn't move forward
:10:52. > :10:57.more often when he is given the chance. He has got sweet hands. That
:10:58. > :11:07.is just a gift, isn't it, to have that ability? God-given talent.
:11:08. > :11:40.It is an engrossing game but you feel both players, they are still in
:11:41. > :12:19.third gear. There is a lot more to come.
:12:20. > :12:29.Kyrgios charging... Murray doing what Ivan Lendl used to do and
:12:30. > :12:39.hitting it straight at his opponent at the net. That is proper play when
:12:40. > :12:44.a guy is trying to squeeze forward and cut you off and not give you
:12:45. > :12:52.options. This is Kyrgios who will try that the drop volley game. And
:12:53. > :12:56.right here, not a lot Murray can do perhaps. So that is the right way,
:12:57. > :13:01.especially if he is sticking his racket out and going for it. If you
:13:02. > :13:06.do that, absolutely what a player like Murray should do. Why do all
:13:07. > :13:11.players not do that? I have no idea. Players do have a tendency,
:13:12. > :13:16.especially in doubles, to get extremely close to the net. If you
:13:17. > :13:23.can get them to rethink and back off. Not as much an issue in
:13:24. > :13:32.singles, where they don't come in as often as they used to.
:13:33. > :13:41.Sue Barker: I'm sorry, we are coming to the end of our transmission on
:13:42. > :13:46.BBC One so time to switch over to continue watching this, on BBC Two.
:13:47. > :13:53.Murray against Kyrgios continues now on BBC Two. And coming up later, we
:13:54. > :13:59.have today at Wimbledon, the day at eight 30p.m. . A busy day with
:14:00. > :14:02.fourth-round matches being played in the men's and ladies Championships.
:14:03. > :14:06.Everybody watching the big screen at Wimbledon, all eyes on Andy Murray
:14:07. > :14:10.and Nick Kyrgios. If you want to continue watching, we will see you
