:00:39. > :00:48.Arca macro welcome to men's quarterfinals day here at Wimbledon.
:00:49. > :00:52.If you are just joining now, sit back and enjoy what should be an
:00:53. > :00:57.exciting day, with four fantastic matches scheduled. An Centre Court,
:00:58. > :01:05.the four-time champion Roger Federer bidding to equal Jimmy Connors'
:01:06. > :01:14.record of 11 Wimbledon semifinals. He faces Marin Cilic with big serves
:01:15. > :01:20.and big ground stroke, too. Then the popular Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces
:01:21. > :01:26.Andy Murray. On Court Number One, Sam Querrey versus Milos Raonic. But
:01:27. > :01:30.here comes the players onto Centre Court, and Roger Federer knows this
:01:31. > :01:42.walks so well. CHEERING
:01:43. > :01:49.A big ovation for Roger, and he knows how dangerous it is, because
:01:50. > :01:57.Marin Cilic beat him in the US Open semifinal in straight sets just two
:01:58. > :02:02.years ago. Court Number One, Sam Querrey and Milos Raonic, 180 aces
:02:03. > :02:07.between them at this Championships. Tomas Berdych is playing his fourth
:02:08. > :02:16.game in a row, and he faces Lucas Pouille. -- fourth day in a row. And
:02:17. > :02:18.here come the two big men, Sam Querrey's first Grand Slam
:02:19. > :02:26.quarterfinal, but Raonic knows this game well.
:02:27. > :02:31.APPLAUSE And both of these players coming
:02:32. > :02:36.back from two sets to love down, so they know how to fight back. Milos
:02:37. > :02:41.Raonic has John McEnroe in his coaching team right now, but Sam
:02:42. > :02:43.Querrey is the man who put out Novak Djokovic, and that has changed the
:02:44. > :02:53.tournament completely, so that bees over on Court Number One. The Hill
:02:54. > :02:56.is packed, and the atmosphere is building an Centre Court, everybody
:02:57. > :03:00.cheering as Roger Federer and Marin Cilic make their way to the
:03:01. > :03:08.baseline. I am here with Jim and Tim. Beautiful atmosphere. Yes,
:03:09. > :03:16.everyone is pretty excited. I would say it is fair that we are, to. And
:03:17. > :03:20.lovely weather last. About time, too. Everyone had a difficult time
:03:21. > :03:25.in the first week, it was stop - start, but to get a day like this
:03:26. > :03:28.with a schedule like this, a lot of exciting tennis ahead. The weather
:03:29. > :03:34.affects the grass courts, and who will this favour? The ball will
:03:35. > :03:39.travel quicker in the warm weather, but it also helps the defender a
:03:40. > :03:44.little, so the grass will be drier, you might be able to plant and stop.
:03:45. > :03:47.I think this is a tricky match-up Federer, this guy can take the
:03:48. > :03:52.racket completely out of his hands, Marin Cilic. Monster serves an big
:03:53. > :03:56.cuts on the ground strokes, if he gets time on the ball he can present
:03:57. > :04:00.a lot of trouble for Roger Federer. He has the big shots, I mentioned
:04:01. > :04:05.that the semifinal at the US Open, straight sets, blew him off the
:04:06. > :04:08.court. That is right, and we have to look to see whether Cilic can have
:04:09. > :04:12.an impact in the first three shots of the rallies, when he hits the
:04:13. > :04:15.service. If it comes back, he has to look to dominate with the first shot
:04:16. > :04:22.of the rally, and if Federer is able to nullify that, get an level terms,
:04:23. > :04:25.he is still the most offensive play on grass, he will have the
:04:26. > :04:31.opportunity to dictate play, move forwards. Certainly given Federer's
:04:32. > :04:34.tournament play this year, he has worked his way into the tournament,
:04:35. > :04:38.he has been lacking match fitness, match toughness, and he did well in
:04:39. > :04:43.the first four matches, but a question mark whether he has really
:04:44. > :04:47.been pushed so far. Looking at his statistics, one record after
:04:48. > :04:50.another, and at the age of 34, as hungry as ever for a Grand Slam
:04:51. > :04:56.title. At as been awhile since he has won one, and I think all of us
:04:57. > :05:00.recognise that this is his best chance. This tournament, he likes
:05:01. > :05:03.this the most, it works best with his assets because he has the
:05:04. > :05:07.ability to blunt the force of someone like Cilic, as we saw him do
:05:08. > :05:14.so many times against Andy Roddick. Just get that serve back in play,
:05:15. > :05:20.that will use his skill, but Tim is right, if Cilic can keep this at
:05:21. > :05:24.three shot rallies also, he has more firepower, that will work in his
:05:25. > :05:31.favour. It could be his 40th Grand Slam semifinal. It is unbelievable.
:05:32. > :05:35.It is, the longevity and the consistency, and this is the first
:05:36. > :05:39.time really where he has his rhythm and settled, he had to have the knee
:05:40. > :05:43.operation after the Australian Open, and he probably missed about two
:05:44. > :05:46.months of tennis, and when he was trying to come back, he was ill and
:05:47. > :05:52.had to miss a tournament in America, and then coming back onto the clay,
:05:53. > :05:56.you struggled with his back, so the French Open was the first Grand Slam
:05:57. > :05:59.he had missed in about 17 years, and then he was trying to find his form
:06:00. > :06:04.on the grass, which is a good surface. And looking here at Marin
:06:05. > :06:09.Cilic, he has a big serve, a big wingspan, he will have to attack
:06:10. > :06:12.today. He will, and when he does, he has proven that he can do what is
:06:13. > :06:17.very hard, he can go through the big layers. When he won the US Open in
:06:18. > :06:23.2014, he didn't drop a set from the quarterfinals on. He didn't give
:06:24. > :06:27.them a chance to play. In a few hours, Roger Federer, his artistic
:06:28. > :06:33.ability, if he gives him the brushes today, he will lose. He has to take
:06:34. > :06:39.everything on his side of the net, take chances and hope that that is
:06:40. > :06:46.enough, it may not be. And what impact has Goran Ivanisevic had an
:06:47. > :06:53.Cilic? He looks to be playing his best tennis in three years. He gave
:06:54. > :06:57.him the belief that he can beat the big players on the biggest stages,
:06:58. > :07:00.and in the semifinals and finals at the US Open, that was a classic
:07:01. > :07:06.example, having beaten Federer in straight sets in the semifinals, it
:07:07. > :07:12.was a huge chance for Cilic in the final against Nishikori, and he took
:07:13. > :07:20.it. What Goran has done best I think is he has signified things, don't
:07:21. > :07:28.overcomplicated, look at very simple tennis, keep the serves big, that is
:07:29. > :07:32.when you play your best tennis. He was one of the great men in tennis.
:07:33. > :07:38.Passionate! He had a lot of firepower.
:07:39. > :07:44.UMPIRE: Time. They have called time, so how do you read this one, Jim? I
:07:45. > :07:50.like Federer but I think you will be tested for sets, Tim? I don't like
:07:51. > :07:54.to agree with Jim, so Federer in five! Roger knows at this stage in
:07:55. > :07:59.the tournament you have to keep improving, to know what does that
:08:00. > :08:02.better than him. So here we go. Tim and Jim are on their way to join
:08:03. > :08:27.Mark Petchey. MARK PETCHEY: Marin Cilic has had
:08:28. > :08:36.huge improvement under the tutelage of Goran Ivanisevic. This man has
:08:37. > :08:46.been accustomed to being in the limelight since that win in 2003.
:08:47. > :09:22.The Croatian to begin this quarterfinal.
:09:23. > :09:28.You see the use of the sliced backhand from Roger, a crucial shot,
:09:29. > :09:51.something that Cilic will utilise often today.
:09:52. > :10:00.You talk about all the match-ups during the game, the serve, the
:10:01. > :10:04.return, who can dictate, but I also think the start is important for
:10:05. > :10:05.Cilic. Federer is such a good front runner, he needs to get off to a
:10:06. > :10:16.good positive start. Roger has played over 70 times now
:10:17. > :10:39.out on this court. A very relaxed looking return there
:10:40. > :10:43.from Roger. Looked as though he was going to try to make any kind of
:10:44. > :10:46.massive drive to break the Cilic serve, which has been hugely
:10:47. > :10:53.impressive, gym, so far in this tournament. He really has. Cilic,
:10:54. > :11:00.particularly when he makes his first serve in play, the far right, he
:11:01. > :11:04.makes 90%. Second serve points, well over half, and he has only been
:11:05. > :11:09.broken three times. This is a man who coming into Wimbledon was having
:11:10. > :11:18.a subpar season. He was making about 55% first serves.
:11:19. > :11:52.He is catching some form right at the right time.
:11:53. > :12:20.Tim, you actually played Cilic just the ones at Queen's back in 2007,
:12:21. > :12:28.all that that was about the time you were starting to stop, wasn't it?
:12:29. > :12:34.Nice to see you, too, Petch! Let me get out of the way for that us that
:12:35. > :12:47.just ran over Tim. Not one of my better days at the office.
:12:48. > :13:02.Did you think back then that this guy would be a Grand Slam champion?
:13:03. > :13:04.I do think I did. He must have been an extremely good player to beat me,
:13:05. > :13:30.but... ! It has been hard to break through in
:13:31. > :13:37.this era, Federer and Nadal and Djokovic and Murray hoarding all of
:13:38. > :13:44.the awards until Wawrinka was able to break through.
:13:45. > :13:55.And Del Potro, the tallest man in the open era to have won Slams, six
:13:56. > :13:57.foot six. He has had a hard time capturing that same form, Cilic,
:13:58. > :14:12.since winning the US Open in 2014. But everything has been clicking for
:14:13. > :14:17.him here at the tournament, and he and Federer practised before the
:14:18. > :14:22.tournament, Roger has been quoted as saying that he knew Marin was onto
:14:23. > :14:30.something, he was thumping the ball with extreme confidence.
:14:31. > :14:34.UMPIRE: Game, Cilic. Another tab to the growing
:14:35. > :14:40.collection here at Wimbledon. It has been arguably the big
:14:41. > :14:45.difference Cilic has been the serve under Goran Ivanisevic. If we look
:14:46. > :14:50.at it closely through Hawk-Eye, it is his contact point. Wimbledon
:14:51. > :14:54.2012, when he was throwing the ball, you see the whips in terms of the
:14:55. > :15:01.beehive as we like to call it, the differential, the height above the
:15:02. > :15:04.court as well. Very few aces. If we move it to Wimbledon 2016, we can
:15:05. > :15:09.see how much narrower the band has got, it is much tighter, he has a
:15:10. > :15:16.much more consistent ball toss, it is a little lower as well. Visually,
:15:17. > :15:17.what does that look like? We went back and looked at his serve from
:15:18. > :15:31.2012 and 2016. And if you see here on the left, you
:15:32. > :15:37.can see the bend, you can see the height of the ball toss if we hold
:15:38. > :15:40.it there. But in 2016, look. The way that he serves here, you can see a
:15:41. > :15:46.much lower ball toss, he is just about to go off and take it there,
:15:47. > :15:49.much straighter, and that is one of the big differences, in fact the
:15:50. > :15:53.main difference that Goran brought to the table. It is so much more
:15:54. > :15:55.efficient now, it takes less effort, the ball toss more efficient, and
:15:56. > :16:19.the results are there to be seen. Just one more thought on Cilic's
:16:20. > :16:23.serve, it is not just that he is serving better, making more in play,
:16:24. > :16:28.getting more out of it, it is also harder on the return. The shorter
:16:29. > :16:32.ball toss makes it tougher to read. When you had the ball toss going up
:16:33. > :16:41.so high in the air, and so varied, you could pick it. More to the left,
:16:42. > :16:43.likely going out wide to the ad court, more to the right, likely to
:16:44. > :17:04.be aiming for the T. This is going to be one of the ways
:17:05. > :17:07.that Federer can do some damage to the Cilic serve. He can lean on that
:17:08. > :17:57.and take your time away. Some good points Federer and his
:17:58. > :18:03.first serves the start of this contest. Getting the ball back in
:18:04. > :18:15.play against both of these players has been difficult. Cilic has been
:18:16. > :18:29.getting free points -- 65% free points on his first serve. S Roger
:18:30. > :18:35.getting just under 50%. 49% is awesome, by the way. Cilic's is
:18:36. > :18:38.mind-boggling. Is that one of the differences on a grass court, that
:18:39. > :18:47.ability of Federer to block a little more than Marin is? Yes, he can make
:18:48. > :18:48.things a little shorter. It is almost like using a volley
:18:49. > :19:19.technique. You can see the comparison on
:19:20. > :19:23.Cilic's serve from 2012 to the same stage, the start of this match
:19:24. > :19:27.today, look at the number of aces and free points that he has picked
:19:28. > :19:41.up. He needs a couple more here, though. Federer pressing.
:19:42. > :19:44.That was a pretty shaky approach shot from Cilic. Federer had a good
:19:45. > :19:54.look at it, but couldn't land it. Early stages, first pressure on his
:19:55. > :20:22.serve, understandable to be a little uptight.
:20:23. > :20:27.He talked about having no nerves prior to meeting Federer in New
:20:28. > :20:31.York, he said it was the calmest he had ever felt. Not quite the same
:20:32. > :20:53.Marin Cilic here. It is certainly early days, but he
:20:54. > :20:55.needs to find that first serve to get himself on the offensive, only
:20:56. > :22:27.38% so far. Saves one break point. He has only been broken three times
:22:28. > :22:30.in the tournament, Cilic. A high percentage of break points saved, as
:22:31. > :22:36.well, so no surprise he manages to get through the first scare. And the
:22:37. > :22:41.Cilic, we have talked about how Goran simplified his serve, and it
:22:42. > :22:46.makes me think of the great serves, if not the greatest of all time,
:22:47. > :22:49.Pete Sampras. I did a clinic with him once the champions event, and I
:22:50. > :22:55.had done a piece on forehands, which was my strongest weapon, and Pete, I
:22:56. > :22:58.said, tell these people about your thoughts when you get up to the
:22:59. > :23:04.service line, what are you thinking? And he stood there and looked at me
:23:05. > :23:10.like I was in A.D8, which I might bebut he says, I just stand up
:23:11. > :23:19.there, throw the ball up and hit it. -- looked at me like I was on idiot.
:23:20. > :23:23.Talk about frustration, being on the other side of that, obviously we
:23:24. > :23:29.have seen what Pete has been able to do over the course of his career,
:23:30. > :23:35.but to know that it was natural to him was frustrating. And to have
:23:36. > :23:41.that clarity of thought. Is that what it is, clarity of thought? Or a
:23:42. > :23:58.lack of thought? Or just pure raw talent.
:23:59. > :24:42.UMPIRE: Let, first service. LAUGHTER
:24:43. > :24:48.It is getting the ball of the second service of Federer quickly back into
:24:49. > :25:25.the backhand. Cilic just locking him up there.
:25:26. > :25:33.APPLAUSE That is what Marin Cilic can do if
:25:34. > :25:37.you give him some time. His big swing is on his grand coach, said if
:25:38. > :25:50.you give him something to hit like this, he can absolutely pummel it.
:25:51. > :25:55.He is a pretty good mover for his size into the open court, but I
:25:56. > :25:57.think he is vulnerable to a ball behind him, I did think he changes
:25:58. > :26:09.direction that well. Obviously on this surface where the
:26:10. > :26:24.footing is a little less, too. Good strategy for Federer.
:26:25. > :26:30.He needs to make sure that he gets a look in on their serves when he sees
:26:31. > :26:39.them, and that off backhand could be crucial in terms of his success.
:26:40. > :26:52.When he lands his first serve, you are not going to be picking up to me
:26:53. > :27:03.points. He has already won nine out of 11 when he has landed at first
:27:04. > :27:04.serve. Severin Luthi, and even Ljubicic, just squeeze between the
:27:05. > :27:24.three men at the front. Cilic hits that serve so fast,
:27:25. > :27:26.normally you see the player taking the whips off, but with his height,
:27:27. > :27:46.he hits it flat. He doesn't really go up after it as
:27:47. > :27:50.much with his legs, it is not like it is a volleyball and he is trying
:27:51. > :27:58.to bring it down. But he is so tall he can slide it wide.
:27:59. > :28:04.You watch a player like Ernst Gulbis, or Alex Deibold Wolof, those
:28:05. > :28:08.guys leap out of the building to go up to make their serves even taller.
:28:09. > :28:26.-- Alexandr Dolgopolov. In fact, even Ljubicic when he
:28:27. > :28:32.played Milos Raonic a couple of years ago, he changed Raonic's serve
:28:33. > :28:36.and had a couple of inches added into his jump to try to do just
:28:37. > :28:50.that. To be able to hit the flat one out wide.
:28:51. > :29:07.S not many -ic players with bad serves! Ljubicic, Ivanisevic, Cilic,
:29:08. > :29:13.Raonic. Karlovic. Take that one all the way home!
:29:14. > :29:31.Help me out, boys. I think you got it.
:29:32. > :29:40.Just sticks the dismount, land the plane! That is the only downside of
:29:41. > :29:43.playing down the line, if you don't have the winner, you open a corridor
:29:44. > :29:49.across court, which is a lot of player's favourite one. And by
:29:50. > :30:06.Federer's standards, that is a pretty easy winner.
:30:07. > :30:17.UMPIRE: Game, Cilic. Another winner, 4-3.
:30:18. > :30:21.So to ditch stays in front on centre Court. Let's take you over to Court
:30:22. > :30:26.Number One where it is still on serve here between the big servers,
:30:27. > :30:32.Milos Raonic and Sam Querrey. That match, if you want to watch it, is
:30:33. > :30:40.on the red button. And a match we were following earlier on the BBC
:30:41. > :30:45.One, bath wash. 4-3 up against Joe Konta and Maria Sanchez. That match
:30:46. > :30:57.you can follow online. Back to centre.
:30:58. > :31:01.Solid so far from Cilic, who has three top-5 wins at flames. We
:31:02. > :31:08.talked about Federer at the US Open, on the way to winning there. He also
:31:09. > :31:13.won in 2010 Australia. Andy Murray in the US Open in 2009. He has also
:31:14. > :31:19.lost 11. His overall record against top five players is highlighted some
:31:20. > :31:25.of the limitations he sat in the past. He's won lost 40. Pitching
:31:26. > :31:30.himself against the very best and not ranking quite as high as the man
:31:31. > :31:33.he is taking on today. Both men holding their serve to this stage
:31:34. > :33:18.thus far. UMPIRE: Game, Federer.
:33:19. > :33:25.Federer holding onto his serve, a bit of a change of racket. No
:33:26. > :33:31.noticeable change for Federer either. With someone stepping down
:33:32. > :33:35.of the last season, came out with them little while but then went back
:33:36. > :33:41.to the family life, although he's been in the player box here the last
:33:42. > :33:47.two matches for Federer. Hard to say what no one knew the judge has been
:33:48. > :33:52.burning. They haven't had a lot of match play together since Federer
:33:53. > :33:54.and he started. Federer has been so often injured him as you've
:33:55. > :34:18.mentioned. What could someone bring to Roger
:34:19. > :34:24.Federer's game at this stage of his career?
:34:25. > :34:26.Good, question. It's not about new shots, it's about the strategy, the
:34:27. > :34:32.way he can exploit opponent's weaknesses. And probably just bring
:34:33. > :35:07.a fresh voice. How good was that? The rally itself
:35:08. > :35:12.is fantastic, then the cherry on top with the backhand smash.
:35:13. > :35:18.Still been a few question marks about the state of Roger Federer's
:35:19. > :35:19.facts, but I've seen that lead, he looks like he's in pretty good
:35:20. > :35:32.shape. I suppose that one thing he's
:35:33. > :35:36.brought to the camp is displayed a lot of these players before, and he
:35:37. > :35:43.played Cilic on three occasions, one twice. These guys for Davis Cup's
:35:44. > :35:51.team-mates for many years. Ironically he used to go to Cilic
:35:52. > :36:00.for Scouting reports on players. He called him the tactician on the
:36:01. > :36:05.Davis Cup team. Sure there's a lot of them say that he would have.
:36:06. > :36:31.There's a lot of value there. You have easily played Roger 13
:36:32. > :36:34.times, you won six. What is changed for you as we see the final point
:36:35. > :36:41.here, him mopping up this game. You beat him in Paris in 2003 after he
:36:42. > :36:47.won Wilton, beat him when he won the Australian himself in 2004. What
:36:48. > :36:51.change for you in Roger's in? It was the ability for him to actually
:36:52. > :36:55.defend. Certainly when I had success against him, I felt I was able to
:36:56. > :37:00.take his time away and that would be serving, Bolling, chipping and
:37:01. > :37:05.charging. Decedent became more consistent and aggressive, he gave
:37:06. > :37:09.me less opportunities to move forward on a thing coinciding with
:37:10. > :37:11.the stars coming at the more abrasive, when you give him time to
:37:12. > :37:17.use all the different strengths, that's when it can be a very long
:37:18. > :37:23.afternoon. You can see the conditions changing here in 2001,
:37:24. > :37:30.Federer serve them probably 100% first and second serves. When he won
:37:31. > :37:33.the title in two years later, his serve was 10% behind his first
:37:34. > :37:36.serve. Opposite ends of the spectrum. When you see him dictating
:37:37. > :37:38.from the back of the court, still looking to be offensive. It's a good
:37:39. > :38:57.combination. Federer going toe to toe with the
:38:58. > :39:02.backhand 's there, trying to drive through the ball. He's been slicing
:39:03. > :39:13.so frequently through the tournament that nearly half of his backhand
:39:14. > :39:16.shots have been slices. But with this bigger racket that he switched
:39:17. > :39:23.to larger size frame a couple of years ago, he's been more offensive
:39:24. > :39:30.at that backhand slide coming closer to the baseline, hit more over the
:39:31. > :39:33.ball than he did with his prior racket. I would argue his backhand
:39:34. > :39:36.is probably better today than it was when he won his 17 major titles.
:39:37. > :39:40.With the other racket! But Novak Djokovic has been a stopper for him.
:39:41. > :39:43.When he's has chances, hasn't he? Is no longer here. One time Novak was
:39:44. > :39:50.really under the weight we thought Roger might get to 18, this man
:39:51. > :39:57.Cilic blitzed him at the US Open. Should Cory was waiting in the
:39:58. > :39:58.final. Pretty easy to hand Roger the trophy at that point, right? That's
:39:59. > :40:33.what everyone was thinking. That's asking a lot of himself, even
:40:34. > :41:31.with his considerable talent. He's been searching for a
:41:32. > :41:41.comfortable place, you struck deep, try to drive it... The consistency
:41:42. > :41:44.has been there over the years, not a lot he can do about that. 6-5,
:41:45. > :41:56.Cilic. Cilic has faced a couple of break
:41:57. > :41:59.points, but let's see where he's taken that first served. Of the
:42:00. > :42:03.tournament, he's been targeting the forehand of the right-handed players
:42:04. > :42:08.and he's doing it again today. You can see, 73% of the time in the
:42:09. > :42:12.deuce court, he's gone wide, he's got three aces there. Federer has
:42:13. > :42:16.been on the T serve in the ad court but when he's gone wide, and he's
:42:17. > :42:21.landed it, he's perfect. Two aces out why for Cilic. To steal one of
:42:22. > :42:26.your favourite words, counterintuitive. To mostly but home
:42:27. > :42:30.that was sounds strange. You would think you would be going at
:42:31. > :42:33.Federer's backhand. But here's the reality, Federer is a good at
:42:34. > :42:37.blocking the server of return with his chip backhand, his forehand will
:42:38. > :42:41.block it but it's more if a drive flat block. You can get more free
:42:42. > :42:46.point if you go at his forehand if you land the first served. And also
:42:47. > :42:49.when you are going with the firepower, with the strand, if you
:42:50. > :42:53.hit that spot you are opening up the weakness. If the ball comes back,
:42:54. > :42:57.then Cilic has the opportunity to go into the backhand with the second
:42:58. > :43:11.shot. It's a tactic to look out for an attack stick that's working well
:43:12. > :43:14.so far. -- it's a tactic. With Federer's awareness, do you think is
:43:15. > :43:20.good to start moving over there a little bit? You would hope so. We
:43:21. > :43:53.will see if we get to a tie-breaker. Cilic is overcome on the left
:43:54. > :44:10.challenge. A valuable point is well at this
:44:11. > :44:30.stage of the set. Two challenges remaining. Just
:44:31. > :44:33.putting a little bit of doubt in Cilic's mind before a tie-break am
:44:34. > :44:41.it if they are headed in that direction. It's not been a tactic
:44:42. > :44:44.for Federer, really. Cilic loves to drive his returns anyway. There's a
:44:45. > :45:00.good reason Roger is hugging the baseline.
:45:01. > :45:19.UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Federer able to take this opening set into a
:45:20. > :45:33.tie-break. Doesn't have the best career tie-break record, Cilic. In
:45:34. > :45:56.deficit this year, 17, lost 13. -- he 17, lost 13.
:45:57. > :46:01.Federer doing well to nullify the serve, get into the rally but the
:46:02. > :46:05.slice backhand. Then looking to be aggressive. First point of the
:46:06. > :46:53.tie-break. How good was that? That was taking
:46:54. > :46:57.it to Roger. Smart return, went right through the middle of the
:46:58. > :47:03.core, pushing Federer back, then he glanced at 106 mile an hour forehand
:47:04. > :47:05.to steal a second point. Not sure if that's the fastest in the
:47:06. > :47:07.tournament, but that's the biggest number I've heard so far in the
:47:08. > :47:46.championship on forehand. Before the match, you wouldn't have
:47:47. > :47:52.know in the direction that Cilic has enjoyed, he's landed both of those.
:47:53. > :47:57.It's pretty incredible that Cilic is wanting 100 percentage of serving
:47:58. > :48:01.points that he did in his previous matches. Entering the quality of
:48:02. > :48:31.Roger's ability to blunt big servers.
:48:32. > :48:42.He's had a good success rate against six foot four or above players and
:48:43. > :49:29.Grand Slams, 132, lost six. -- won 32.
:49:30. > :49:37.Just enough about serve to force Federer to lean, another ace out
:49:38. > :50:10.there and a whole handful of set points.
:50:11. > :50:18.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE He survives, one of the four set
:50:19. > :50:37.points. Cilic just checking with the umpire
:50:38. > :51:27.that first served. UMPIRE: Game. What are wonderful
:51:28. > :51:35.tie-breaker that was from Cilic. He grabs the opening set 7-6. We knew
:51:36. > :51:38.with the big weapons he has he was going to be a danger man against
:51:39. > :51:43.Roger Federer, so it's Cilic that has taken the first set. We're going
:51:44. > :51:48.to leave this on BBC Two. It continues right now on BBC One. If
:51:49. > :51:52.you want to keep watching, switch over to BBC One. Just before we head
:51:53. > :51:57.to Court Number One, I can show you that out on court 18, Jamie Murray
:51:58. > :52:05.of Great Britain and his partner Bruno Suarez are facing the French
:52:06. > :52:08.do wrote that are serving for the first set against the number three
:52:09. > :52:15.seeds. If you want to watch Jamie's match, it's on the red button. And
:52:16. > :52:23.the result from the match we were watching other, third round match.
:52:24. > :52:30.It's been won by Babos, 7-5 in the third set. A rough adult how on
:52:31. > :52:33.court and number two. A shame for Sanchez and content. They pushed the
:52:34. > :52:45.number five seeds but it ended in a loss. As I said, we're heading off
:52:46. > :52:49.to number one court. Melas Raonic has taken the first set. It's on
:52:50. > :52:51.serve in the second, let's join our commentators for this one. Peter
:52:52. > :53:09.Fryman at and John Imber Dell. No bother for Raonic. So, tell us,
:53:10. > :53:14.Peter. You mentioned earlier on about that snap of the wrist at the
:53:15. > :53:17.key moment. You've got to take a punch, haven't you, on which way you
:53:18. > :53:21.think it's going to go? Is there any giveaway clues in the way that he
:53:22. > :53:29.throws the ball up and he had said that you can make an educated guess?
:53:30. > :53:34.Unfortunately not. Guessing generally speaking is the worst
:53:35. > :53:39.thing you can do. You want to be able to see some little tidbit and
:53:40. > :53:45.where he tosses the ball, but Raonic can hit the kicker or slice or flat
:53:46. > :53:51.one all from the same ball toss. That one looked to be a
:53:52. > :53:55.kick-serve... Until he hits it, you really can't guess. Where it's going
:53:56. > :53:59.to go, until the ball has travelled three or four feet and by that time,
:54:00. > :54:07.with the power that he hits it, it's often too late. That was actually a
:54:08. > :54:12.fantastic slow Mo, you can see the revolutions of the ball. As easy to
:54:13. > :54:18.follow spinning and spinning, it's like a planet or meteor up in space.
:54:19. > :54:21.If you watch the ball, you can see how many revolutions it's doing.
:54:22. > :54:25.Obviously that impacts what is hitting the ground, massive great
:54:26. > :54:28.kick off the surface. You can see it coming screen there. Look at it
:54:29. > :55:01.going, like a top! So it is. He's hitting the lines with enormous
:55:02. > :55:03.regularity. I'm sure Raonic must be thrilled to death with the form he
:55:04. > :55:34.showed in these first 43 minutes. Sam Querrey is hanging on in there
:55:35. > :55:42.at the moment. Impressive, impressive. Vigilant, if you will,
:55:43. > :55:45.from Raonic to continue attacking, taking chances. It's not in his
:55:46. > :55:59.nature. Ace number five. Actually, yet
:56:00. > :56:03.another unreturned will serve from Querrey. The key thing is, there are
:56:04. > :56:33.less from him than there are from Raonic.
:56:34. > :56:48.The Querrey serve under threat again.
:56:49. > :57:06.That was a very measured response there to that situation.
:57:07. > :57:24.UMPIRE: Two it games all. You went for the whole enchilada. Because he
:57:25. > :57:30.wasn't able to hit a winner, wasn't able to place it well enough, pretty
:57:31. > :57:31.simple response from Querrey required. Just bung into the open
:57:32. > :57:46.court. That is four service games in a row
:57:47. > :57:48.the Querrey has been under threat. One break was enough in the first
:57:49. > :58:51.set for Raonic. Carlos Moreira and the rest of the
:58:52. > :58:56.Raonic team are in situ, but John macro, if you're wondering why where
:58:57. > :59:00.he is, why the camera is not panning on him every five seconds, he is
:59:01. > :59:21.commentating on ESPN on centre Court.
:59:22. > :59:28.He is sending messages to Raonic all the while, saying doing OK. More
:59:29. > :00:00.than OK! Doing brilliantly. Querrey is a bit irritated about
:00:01. > :00:08.losing that opportunity. It was no more than a half chance, but Querrey
:00:09. > :00:12.now feeling the pressure to make the half chances, because he is seeing
:00:13. > :00:24.so few opportunities. That is another game to 15 for Raonic.
:00:25. > :00:35.He is metronomic as far as the serving is concerned, Milos Raonic,
:00:36. > :00:38.that is 15 games of tennis in 48 minutes, so they are not messing
:00:39. > :00:51.around, and that is just picture perfect, is it not? The skies above
:00:52. > :00:55.number one. Raonic has always had a great serve, but it is the addition
:00:56. > :01:03.of this net play, of effective forecourt play that really is making
:01:04. > :01:08.a huge difference to Raonic's ability to impose himself an
:01:09. > :01:11.opponents. Because of course he used to serve, and he missed the first
:01:12. > :01:17.serve, he would say back on the second one, and when playing against
:01:18. > :01:23.quicker players, he would be outmanoeuvred. So in the context of
:01:24. > :01:29.improving his volleying, what specific, is it his footwork? It is
:01:30. > :01:33.largely mental. It is mental, because the most important aspect of
:01:34. > :01:36.being a good net player is being able to defend the net, and to do
:01:37. > :01:41.that, you have to time your split step vertically. You have to get
:01:42. > :01:47.your two feet down onto the court in perfect balance, at roughly the
:01:48. > :01:49.instant the opponent is striking the passing shot, striking the ball.
:01:50. > :02:15.Just takes practice. And awareness. UMPIRE: Mr Querrey is challenging
:02:16. > :02:21.the ball on the far side line, the ball was called in. And so few serve
:02:22. > :02:25.and volley players, they don't come to the net but often. There isn't a
:02:26. > :02:31.great deal of awareness on the tour of the proper way to move.
:02:32. > :02:35.It is surprising that the players don't bring in old school coaches
:02:36. > :02:52.are little more often. It certainly helped Federer when
:02:53. > :02:56.Edberg came in. With every passing year, there are fewer old school
:02:57. > :03:10.coaches, because the old school are getting older!
:03:11. > :03:32.It is always with the passage of time you find yourself being
:03:33. > :03:42.fascinated by the obituaries column in newspapers.
:03:43. > :03:53.Oh, Sam! You didn't want to do that. A rare error really off the Querrey
:03:54. > :04:09.forehand. Usually so secure. UMPIRE: New balls, please. That is
:04:10. > :04:19.the most straightforward service game that Sam Querrey has had for a
:04:20. > :04:29.while. And as one-sided as this match has seemed over the first 52
:04:30. > :04:36.minutes, it is still just 3-3 in the second. If this was a boxing
:04:37. > :04:45.contest, you would feel that Querrey would be three rounds ahead, but he
:04:46. > :04:47.is just one. It is a genius scoring system. It allows players to stay
:04:48. > :05:06.competitive until the bitter end. And that is why all these myriad
:05:07. > :05:09.attempts there are to find a tennis equivalent of Twenty20 cricket are
:05:10. > :05:10.falling by the wayside, because the integrity of the game is dependent
:05:11. > :05:19.on the scoring system. Raonic making it look very simple at
:05:20. > :05:45.the moment. These games are coming and going in
:05:46. > :06:33.the blink of a knife. UMPIRE: Raonic leads 4-3 second set,
:06:34. > :06:38.and one sets to love. Not the slightest possibility of Sam Querrey
:06:39. > :06:42.getting into that game. Are we seeing potentially here as Raonic
:06:43. > :06:48.gets better and better on grass, are we seeing a kind of Sampras like
:06:49. > :06:54.game returning to Wimbledon? It certainly appears that that is a
:06:55. > :06:59.possibility. Raonic not quite the athlete that Pete Sampras was, so he
:07:00. > :07:06.could play the chip and charge style, and be very intimidating at
:07:07. > :07:12.it, and also the serve and volley game, and be very intimidating.
:07:13. > :07:16.However, Raonic one of the few guys who probably does serve as well as
:07:17. > :07:23.Pete Sampras, and I regard Sampras is having the greatest serve of all
:07:24. > :07:30.time. So, yes. I don't know about you, but I think this is the best
:07:31. > :07:34.tennis I have ever seen Milos Raonic play. I thought the best tennis I
:07:35. > :07:37.had ever seen him play was at Queen's in the final, but this might
:07:38. > :07:42.be better than that, because that was arguably the best game of men's
:07:43. > :07:49.tennis on grass this year that has been available for most people to
:07:50. > :07:52.see. Up until a set and 4-1, that was the best he played, but he might
:07:53. > :08:00.actually be playing better now, because he is up against a much
:08:01. > :08:01.bigger server, and still. And he has 2/2 more weeks of McEnroe influence
:08:02. > :08:38.in there. Oh, a ridiculous shot from Querrey,
:08:39. > :08:46.and a magnificent shot from Raonic to win it. This is scary good from
:08:47. > :08:52.both guys. He just said, I will give it a shot, why not, hits a perfect
:08:53. > :08:56.one right at Raonic's feet and he still digs it out.
:08:57. > :09:04.UMPIRE: Mr Raonic challenging the call on the left service line, the
:09:05. > :09:12.ball was called in. Hawk-Eye in the commentary box says that was long.
:09:13. > :09:24.Bad call from the commentary box! UMPIRE: 30-15. Surprise, surprise.
:09:25. > :09:46.UMPIRE: Mr Raonic has two challenges remaining.
:09:47. > :09:55.You can always sensed the vibe of a court just by the noise and by the
:09:56. > :10:03.general ambience, and this crowd are really in this match. We are not
:10:04. > :10:07.having many blistering rallies, we had one in that last game which I am
:10:08. > :10:14.sure we will show you again soon, but this is really compelling stuff.
:10:15. > :10:19.Nice to see a match played at this pace, almost two sets completed and
:10:20. > :10:39.we still haven't played one hour. That is just nasty. I'm sure the
:10:40. > :10:43.crowd on Court One today will say, we haven't got Federer or Murray,
:10:44. > :10:44.but they have got two intriguing games, and this one is certainly
:10:45. > :10:52.living up to its billing. And this guy very much a potential
:10:53. > :11:10.champion here. S not playing like that! That is the
:11:11. > :11:17.first time he has gone and got caught out in that situation. And
:11:18. > :11:21.that is the challenge for Raonic. We saw against Murray he was up a set
:11:22. > :11:23.and 4-1, fell away drastically, so he needs to maintain this level of
:11:24. > :11:35.play for another couple of hours. And that of course is the incentive
:11:36. > :11:38.for Querrey. He has got to believe that Raonic can't keep playing this
:11:39. > :11:42.well indefinitely, so at some point he is going to get a chance, and
:11:43. > :11:49.that is when he has got to take it. Precisely.
:11:50. > :12:00.And that was a chance. Now there is a good example. Querrey attempting
:12:01. > :12:05.to come into the net, almost to take the net away from Raonic, so he is
:12:06. > :12:15.feeling the pressure, the Canadian constantly coming forward.
:12:16. > :12:22.But a couple of errant shots from Raonic.
:12:23. > :12:31.And it has been a while since we have had 30-30 on a Raonic serve.
:12:32. > :12:32.Querrey has to banish thoughts of that forehand into the net and
:12:33. > :12:56.think, this might be my moment. Two forehand errors. And a backhand,
:12:57. > :13:00.three unforced error is from Querrey. He had real chances in this
:13:01. > :13:16.game. And in the final analysis, how key
:13:17. > :13:20.will those couple of points P? Well left by the Canadian. That could
:13:21. > :13:29.have been Querrey's chance, but it wasn't.
:13:30. > :13:32.SUE BARKER: And we will be back to see query macro serve to stay in
:13:33. > :13:35.this set in a moment. Let's update you with what is happening
:13:36. > :13:39.elsewhere. Federer dropped the opening set, and now he is in
:13:40. > :13:46.trouble in the second, Cilic leads 4-2 with that break of serve. That
:13:47. > :13:52.is live over on BBC One. Over on court 18, Jamie Murray and his
:13:53. > :13:56.partner Bruno Soares, than of three seats, they have dropped the opening
:13:57. > :14:02.set and are break of serve down in the second set to Roger-Vasselin and
:14:03. > :14:09.Julien Benneteau of France. And this one is available online, on Court
:14:10. > :14:17.Two, Jonny Marray and his partner adult Shannon is in, they are 2-0
:14:18. > :14:21.down in the opening set, so one break of serve down in that match.
:14:22. > :14:28.That is just starting on Court Number Two, and it is available
:14:29. > :14:34.online. So all of that going on here today, it is men's quarterfinals
:14:35. > :14:40.day, and back we go to court 11. -- number one.
:14:41. > :14:43.JOHN INVERDALE: It is a key moment in this North American face-off here
:14:44. > :14:47.with Querrey serving to stay in the second set, and this is what
:14:48. > :14:51.happened in the first set. All the way to 4-4 on serve, one break of
:14:52. > :14:53.serve, first set to Raonic, and here is a chance to duplicate that exact
:14:54. > :15:46.scenario. Well, what a shot into the absolute
:15:47. > :15:52.apex of the court from Raonic there. PETER FLEMING: Who is this guy? It
:15:53. > :16:41.even had a bit of side spin on it, to take it away from Querrey.
:16:42. > :16:45.Well, Querrey moved his feet really well there, because that ball was
:16:46. > :17:05.coming in like a rocket. Someone in the crowd just shouted,
:17:06. > :17:11.plate again, Sam! -- play it again, Sam!
:17:12. > :17:24.That was distinctly off note and of key. But he still has a .45 each.
:17:25. > :17:44.And he makes it. UMPIRE: Five games all, second set.
:17:45. > :17:45.I don't suppose anybody in the crowd has ever shouted that before in one
:17:46. > :18:20.of Querrey's games, do you? No one has shouted come on, Tim,
:18:21. > :18:29.yet, so that is one thing. Look at his reaction, he knows that was
:18:30. > :18:36.another chance. He is making the right moves. Although not so crazy
:18:37. > :18:42.about the fact that he never took a split step. A split step so often
:18:43. > :18:45.helps you gather your balance so that you will shot making can be
:18:46. > :19:10.more precise. I think a lot of players have the
:19:11. > :19:14.stake in impression that if you keep running, you will get there quicker,
:19:15. > :19:21.maybe so, but you will hit the shot slighty out of balance because of
:19:22. > :19:26.that. I don't see the point. We will get you to do a masterclass on the
:19:27. > :19:48.split step at this next change of ends. That is ambitious!
:19:49. > :19:59.Oh, look at that! Great hands, great touch. 6-5.
:20:00. > :20:04.OK, you are getting your moneys worth here at home, because you have
:20:05. > :20:10.had a service masterclass earlier on from Peter Fleming. Talk about the
:20:11. > :20:17.split step. What does it do and specific stages of a point or shot?
:20:18. > :20:21.You want Europe to feet to land, now he can move either way equally
:20:22. > :20:32.quickly. That is the perfect way to do it, and the better you can time
:20:33. > :20:36.that split step, the two feet land, and it is a nanosecond after your
:20:37. > :20:42.opponent hits the ball, so you can see where the ball is going, and as
:20:43. > :20:46.soon as you land, you are off. In civil terms were people who do
:20:47. > :20:50.aerobics or whatever at home, it is almost like a coursed ability
:20:51. > :20:54.exercise. It gets you to a position of mutual, if you like, from which
:20:55. > :20:59.you can then launch whatever direction you want to go. It is not
:21:00. > :21:03.rocket science, just copy what he did there. Just land on two feet, be
:21:04. > :21:12.equally balanced front to back, left to right, and you are good. Querrey
:21:13. > :21:15.will need to be good here, because yet again the advantage that Raonic
:21:16. > :21:35.has had of serving first, he is serving to stay in the set.
:21:36. > :21:40.He is doing it again, that fantastic slice into Querrey's forehand and
:21:41. > :22:04.then lovely down the line. I watched a lot of the juniors play
:22:05. > :22:07.yesterday, top juniors. And across three or four hours, maybe,
:22:08. > :22:11.cumulatively, if I saw two slices in that time, that is probably one more
:22:12. > :22:15.than I did see. But it is such a great weapon, isn't
:22:16. > :22:30.it? Absolutely, because it also is a
:22:31. > :22:37.great way to take your opponent out of their rhythm. Slices sometimes
:22:38. > :22:39.are more difficult shot to return, especially on a grass court where it
:22:40. > :22:48.slides through the court. For guys hitting the forehand
:22:49. > :22:55.aggressively, it forces them to put top-spin on it. Oh, Sam! Goodness
:22:56. > :23:00.me. All those opportunities he had and didn't take, and now suddenly
:23:01. > :23:05.again, this is what Raonic did to him in the first set, almost coming
:23:06. > :23:09.up on the blindside, and thanks to a couple of errors from the American,
:23:10. > :23:16.here we are, Milos Raonic with two points for a two sets to love lead.
:23:17. > :23:38.And the crowd know how big this moment might be.
:23:39. > :23:43.Oh, that forehand let him down again. And Milos Raonic is two
:23:44. > :23:52.thirds of the way to a Wimbledon semifinal.
:23:53. > :24:05.Sam Querrey walking the tightrope right now, and there is such a fine
:24:06. > :24:11.line between... Well, being a Grand Slam champion, and being a
:24:12. > :24:18.quarterfinalist, a semifinalist, a guy who almost gets there but just
:24:19. > :24:21.never quite gets across the line, and so far today, these two have
:24:22. > :24:29.been absolutely neck and neck apart from the two games on Querrey's
:24:30. > :24:36.serve where he has thrown in three or four unforced errors in key
:24:37. > :24:40.games. In both games! If you give your opponent four unforced error
:24:41. > :24:45.is, you will get broken. But again, look at the number of net approach
:24:46. > :24:54.points won, Raonic 12 out of 15, very has done well when he came in,
:24:55. > :25:01.just came in half the time. Break points won, on a night when Wales
:25:02. > :25:07.are playing Portugal, if Portugal got 95% of possession but Wales get
:25:08. > :25:16.one chance and Joe Allen Gareth Bale or whoever it, that is all that
:25:17. > :25:21.matters -- whoever it might be takes it, that is all that matters. That
:25:22. > :25:26.is the ball game. On the other side of the coin, if you are in Milos
:25:27. > :25:31.Raonic's camp, you are thrilled with the way that he has been able to
:25:32. > :25:37.maintain a very, very strong presence and high level of
:25:38. > :25:43.effectiveness. Querrey hasn't got a sniff on Raonic's serve, has he? Not
:25:44. > :25:51.winning points in a lot of games. And so the pressure has remained on
:25:52. > :25:55.the American, and he has succumbed to it, really. So far. So that is
:25:56. > :26:02.the bad news for Sam Querrey. The good news is that he has lost the
:26:03. > :26:08.first two sets, largely of his own back. If he can pull himself
:26:09. > :26:12.together and just calm himself, steel himself a little more so that
:26:13. > :26:17.he doesn't make unforced errors like that one, then he is still in this
:26:18. > :26:23.match. But of course the pressure is greater with every passing game, and
:26:24. > :26:27.again, for the third set running, Raonic is going to serve first, so
:26:28. > :26:31.Querrey is going to be chasing his tail from the word go, and that is
:26:32. > :26:34.what it has been all the way through by the very nature of it, because of
:26:35. > :26:40.the way he has made his mistakes at the time that he has made them, that
:26:41. > :26:46.is the problem he has got. Yes, he has to just dig in, he has to almost
:26:47. > :26:57.convince himself that this is doable, that he can win this match
:26:58. > :27:06.and that all he needs to do is to buckets of up -- Buck himself up a
:27:07. > :27:14.little bit, round at those unforced error is. Raonic took a toilet break
:27:15. > :27:22.there, he is back now. Our ace producer here, Dave, when we walked
:27:23. > :27:30.in and are half -- one and a half hours ago, he said he had chocolate
:27:31. > :27:35.supplies, when do we want them, and we said, at the start of the third
:27:36. > :27:39.set, and you said it could be two thirds of the way through the match,
:27:40. > :27:49.do you still think that? It was just a line! But you never know. If
:27:50. > :27:50.Querrey does get into automaton mode where he starts banging down aces,
:27:51. > :28:15.this one could go a long time. Pretty safe to say that Querrey will
:28:16. > :29:08.have to go to those lengths, because Raonic looks so secure.
:29:09. > :29:24.Nice and easy does it. So quick, so simple, but a few very serious shots
:29:25. > :29:29.being fired across the bows of everybody else left in this
:29:30. > :29:32.tournament here by Milos Raonic. I would say so, and Querrey needs to
:29:33. > :29:40.do something to turn the tables. Immediately.
:29:41. > :29:44.And he has to banish thoughts of those mistakes he made at the end of
:29:45. > :30:08.the last set. And I'd say the start to the
:30:09. > :30:10.exercise comes on his serve. He needs to start holding a lot more
:30:11. > :30:39.easily, with more regularity. I think that is the first ball that
:30:40. > :30:43.Querrey has hit that has hit the net and gone over. He is smiling, so
:30:44. > :30:53.maybe he feels that the net has changed sides now. Yeah, that's the
:30:54. > :31:13.ticket. Right. And the verdict on that?
:31:14. > :31:21.Querrey screamed at himself. Just dumped it into the open court, but
:31:22. > :32:02.got away with it. Great shot! At the end of a
:32:03. > :32:06.fantastic rally. Sure there is a part of Sam Querrey that is going,
:32:07. > :32:11.what is going on here? I have never seen you play like this before.
:32:12. > :33:12.Don't you know who I am? I am the man who beat Djokovic.
:33:13. > :33:17.Well, you can sometimes read too much into body language, but a
:33:18. > :33:30.definite slump in Sam Querrey's shoulders there. Raonic stays out in
:33:31. > :33:40.front and we will be back here just a moment, but we go back to centre.
:33:41. > :33:43.Cilic is to set sub against Federer on the Centre Court. Federer is
:33:44. > :33:49.missing some key points, and we have never seen that from him before. He
:33:50. > :33:54.is in real trouble. Federer 2-1 up in this set and fighting hard. That
:33:55. > :34:10.is live on BBC One. We will keep you up-to-date with that year as we
:34:11. > :34:12.rejoin Court One. I suppose Querrey's rather lumbering demeanour
:34:13. > :34:18.as he walked to the chair are there, and you could actually see that,
:34:19. > :34:21.that is born of frustration and just thinking is there any possibility of
:34:22. > :34:30.this guys level dropping at some point to allow me into this match?
:34:31. > :34:35.At this point in time, you could forgive him for being slightly
:34:36. > :34:41.tomorrow left because Raonic has served 13 service games and he has
:34:42. > :34:48.lost seven points on serve total. Seven point! That is one every other
:34:49. > :34:53.game. How is Querrey supports to think that he will mount a challenge
:34:54. > :34:56.to break the Canadian if he continues in this vein? We will have
:34:57. > :34:59.this conversation at the beginning of the next game if Querrey manages
:35:00. > :35:22.to hold here. If he does. If it is two apiece after this game,
:35:23. > :35:23.I want you to come up with a return strategy for Sam Querrey in the next
:35:24. > :35:50.game. If Sam Querrey. Raonic was too good
:35:51. > :35:54.for him, he now knows he is too good for everybody. This is when you know
:35:55. > :35:58.things are going your way. This was a great passing shot. Raonic just
:35:59. > :36:12.managed to get his racket on it, bounced it back over the net.
:36:13. > :36:20.Perfect winner. I think that comes under the heading of when your
:36:21. > :36:31.heart, you're hot. When you're hot, you're scolding. Milos Raonic chuck
:36:32. > :36:42.the moment is scolding Sam Querrey. Goodness me. That is the first time
:36:43. > :36:48.Querrey has been red-hot two. Yet, and this is what he needs to be do
:36:49. > :36:53.-- doing if he wants to be competitive. He needs to hit some
:36:54. > :37:05.great shots. That is what he did against Djokovic. Why not? Goodness.
:37:06. > :37:09.That was a shocking call. That was so far in. It was just one of those
:37:10. > :37:22.impetuous things that creep out suddenly for no obvious reason. So
:37:23. > :37:28.just as well Querrey did that. He's still maintaining a genial
:37:29. > :37:40.disposition. Yeah, and that just may be helpful for him. Well, the
:37:41. > :37:59.quality of some of the hitting here...
:38:00. > :38:12.That is well played by Querrey. Neat hands on the approach shot. And no
:38:13. > :38:23.panic. When the volley had to be made.
:38:24. > :38:35.Not without yet more footers. Here we go. Mr Fleming, what does he do
:38:36. > :38:39.on Earth now to get any kind of impact in this game? Well, first
:38:40. > :38:46.things first. He needs to change where he is standing to return
:38:47. > :38:48.serve. OK. And it is not that where he is standing is wrong, it's just
:38:49. > :38:56.that he needs to show something different to hopefully distract
:38:57. > :39:00.Raonic a little bit. Even if he doesn't make any returns, he has to
:39:01. > :39:07.do something to take Raonic out of this rhythm. Whatever he does. Can't
:39:08. > :39:41.work any less. Querrey was so far out of court
:39:42. > :39:57.there. This is a proper masterclass. In attacking tennis.
:39:58. > :40:09.Scoff that on the ground, but it was still beautifully executed. And he
:40:10. > :40:26.almost can't miss at the moment. What a great feeling that must be.
:40:27. > :40:32.Raonic has now had 14 service games. And has lost seven points
:40:33. > :40:42.cumulatively in those. That is why the scoreboard looks like that.
:40:43. > :40:57.Well, that went well. From Querrey's point of view, that game. And
:40:58. > :41:02.obviously this was the volley from Raonic that went over the net and
:41:03. > :41:11.then bounced back onto his side. And there is nothing you can do about
:41:12. > :41:23.that. Except smile ruefully. And hope. The racket so far has been
:41:24. > :41:26.taken out of Querrey's hands. Maybe that is an exaggeration because
:41:27. > :41:35.Querrey has contributed to the position he is in biplane to very
:41:36. > :41:43.bad service games. -- by playing two very bad service games. His level
:41:44. > :41:47.dipped at the key moment. But of course, the fact that Raonic was
:41:48. > :41:54.holding so easily contributed to perhaps the uneasiness of Querrey.
:41:55. > :42:07.Well, less than an hour and a half of this match, and we may not be far
:42:08. > :42:14.from the finishing line. Oh, no. You can't let that ball go. Querrey
:42:15. > :42:18.could have reached this. He has two hit it could be think it is anywhere
:42:19. > :42:29.near the sideline. It wasn't even close, in fact. Come on.
:42:30. > :42:33.Surely Querrey can feel the aggression that Raonic is attacking
:42:34. > :43:36.him with. Well, that was straightforward
:43:37. > :43:41.enough for the American. Quarter to three on a glorious summer
:43:42. > :43:47.afternoon. In the UK, so what does that mean? It is quirky to seven on
:43:48. > :43:50.the West Coast of America and Canada so I suspect a lot of people have
:43:51. > :44:02.said their alarm for around about now. And those people in Vancouver
:44:03. > :44:15.will be a lot happier than those in LA.
:44:16. > :44:32.Also because they are not breathing all of that smog, right?
:44:33. > :44:44.And they don't have a presidential election coming up. No kidding.
:44:45. > :44:57.We'll get your views on that later. Yeah, not likely.
:44:58. > :45:06.Well, the first trump card for Raonic is that serve and yet again
:45:07. > :45:14.he is closing in on another simple service game. That was like Pete
:45:15. > :45:40.Sampras. But, a despairing swing from Querrey
:45:41. > :45:47.the baseball player at that pitch. I guess the good news is, he won a
:45:48. > :45:52.point there. You are a real half-full kind of guy, aren't you?
:45:53. > :45:55.Welcomer here are some facts and figures that will show you that
:45:56. > :46:05.throughout the whole tournament, he has won 82% of the points on his
:46:06. > :46:10.first serve, but today, 92%. This is a battle of the heavyweights. Look
:46:11. > :46:14.at that differential as well. 60-81 today. The battle of the
:46:15. > :46:19.heavyweights, but Querrey has been on the ropes from the word go and he
:46:20. > :46:23.discount get off. Well, first of all, to win 60% of your second serve
:46:24. > :46:32.points throughout the tournament, that is astounding. To be at 81%
:46:33. > :46:37.shows that Raonic has been absolutely dominate from the back of
:46:38. > :46:40.the court, because he has not served and volleyed many times at all on
:46:41. > :46:46.the second serve, but he has attacked the net and won so many
:46:47. > :46:50.points in the forecourt, he has demoralised Querrey. Querrey needs
:46:51. > :46:59.to somehow Buck himself up a little bit here and steel himself and say
:47:00. > :47:08.he is not going down this easily. At least go to a breaker. And if we go
:47:09. > :47:16.back to the toss of the coin, right at the start, it was so key. Because
:47:17. > :47:20.Raonic won the serve or rather won the toss, elected to serve, and he
:47:21. > :47:22.has been in the box seat ever since and Querrey has been chasing him
:47:23. > :47:52.from the word go. We will never know how important the
:47:53. > :48:51.coin toss was. Could have played a role. Nine aces each.
:48:52. > :49:00.It was there to be hit, and boy was it hit. And yet again, in marked
:49:01. > :49:16.contrast to when Raonic is serving, here it is Querrey under pressure.
:49:17. > :49:26.Well, that was a horrible volley from Sam Querrey, an easy winner
:49:27. > :49:33.from Raonic. Yes, one of the first point is that they played today
:49:34. > :49:40.where Raonic showed poor awareness. It was an easy volley for Querrey,
:49:41. > :49:41.just ducked it. And on a second serve, to all intents and purposes,
:49:42. > :50:05.this is match point. Perhaps just a little too passive
:50:06. > :50:11.from Raonic there. It is tempting, isn't it? Because Querrey has had so
:50:12. > :50:13.many unforced errors in big games. He may get the chance to do it
:50:14. > :50:33.again. Well played, Sam Querrey. His heart
:50:34. > :50:41.must have been fluttering a bit at that break point. And we have been
:50:42. > :51:03.here before. So their celebrations are on hold just a
:51:04. > :51:09.little bit longer. Yeah, they've been rather more subdued than say
:51:10. > :51:10.the Aussie fanatics, haven't they? Is that not systematic of the
:51:11. > :51:41.nation? -- symptomatic. Ten aces each, but that is the only
:51:42. > :51:48.statistic that Querrey is level on. Well, what a beautiful volley from
:51:49. > :51:52.Raonic, it really was and it left Querrey at sixes and sevens and
:51:53. > :51:57.eights and nines. He just did not know what to do about that. Yeah,
:51:58. > :52:01.but again that is the symptom of not taking a split step. He was just
:52:02. > :52:20.running and had to stop. That was all he was left with. I am not
:52:21. > :52:24.finished yet, says Querrey. A despairing lunge from Raonic, almost
:52:25. > :52:44.a despairing forehand from Querrey, but it did the job. So solid.
:52:45. > :52:50.John McEnroe, who is commentating on Centre Court on the Federer match
:52:51. > :53:22.against Cilic, he will enjoy watching the rerun of that.
:53:23. > :53:37.Well played, Sam Querrey. Hanging in on that one. That is about one of
:53:38. > :53:42.the first, if not the first approach shot that Raonic has missed today.
:53:43. > :53:51.Only for the second time in this match, Querrey has got to 30 on the
:53:52. > :54:07.Raonic serve. That is extraordinary. Didn't do him much good, though.
:54:08. > :54:12.Well, a big sigh from Sam Querrey as he sat them there, because he is
:54:13. > :54:16.going to have to do what he had to do in the first set and in the
:54:17. > :54:19.second set and on both of those occasions, he came unstuck. He is
:54:20. > :54:27.going to have to serve this time to stay in the match. And he has two
:54:28. > :54:41.just keep doing what he is doing. Yes. Well, breaking for the match is
:54:42. > :54:48.just somewhat more nerve wracking than breaking for a set. Soap Raonic
:54:49. > :54:51.also has two fight those jitters that sometimes arise when you're so
:54:52. > :55:09.close and yet so far from victory. Well, that's the scene that we would
:55:10. > :55:13.love to have had to Mondays ago and it has taken as ten days to get to
:55:14. > :55:19.that point, but it is just a magnificent sight here on Court One
:55:20. > :55:33.at the moment. And there is Alan Jones, champion here in 1969. And
:55:34. > :55:35.here is Milos Raonic. He could be a champion here at some point in the
:55:36. > :57:54.future and it might be this year. Well, he lost the first point in
:57:55. > :57:59.that game, and after that he was OK. So he gets one more shot, another
:58:00. > :58:03.opportunity to go at the Raonic serve and he might be thinking,
:58:04. > :58:20.well, I got to 30 in the last game. If I can get to 40 this time... And
:58:21. > :58:38.if Raonic drops his level. Then who knows? Just didn't get it in the
:58:39. > :58:49.sweet spot. A bit tentative. Nothing tentative about that. He made it
:58:50. > :58:54.look so simple, so easy, and yet the touch required the relaxation
:58:55. > :59:23.required to play that shot is difficult. As effectively as he did.
:59:24. > :59:33.Well played, Sam Querrey! It has taken an hour and 47 minutes. But he
:59:34. > :59:39.took that second serve inside the court and that was a great volley.
:59:40. > :59:52.Extreme measure required and delivered.
:59:53. > :00:08.That was a ridiculous pick-up from Raonic. That could have been the
:00:09. > :00:11.moment for some Querrey. Just about the most difficult shot a player
:00:12. > :00:15.will have to hit is a half-volley, which was just prior to that put
:00:16. > :00:27.away volley, played to perfection. Maybe that fist pump from Raonic
:00:28. > :00:40.indicative of how important he knew that point might be.
:00:41. > :00:49.More in hope than expectation, you expect, from Raonic.
:00:50. > :00:58.That is the first double fault of this match. Sorry, the second. That
:00:59. > :01:04.is his second double fault. Anyway, what a time to serve it and what a
:01:05. > :01:31.chance for Querrey, his first break point of the match.
:01:32. > :01:48.Made it! Made it! And as if from nowhere, Querrey is in this match.
:01:49. > :01:59.You asked at the start of that game or the game before, what does
:02:00. > :02:07.Querrey need to do to have a chance to break through? He showed us in
:02:08. > :02:14.that game at the 15-15 point when he took the second serve, wrapped it
:02:15. > :02:17.and came in behind it that he was willing to become more aggressive,
:02:18. > :02:20.willing to take a few more risks, and they paid off. And this match
:02:21. > :02:37.just may have swung. Well, Raonic may have been eyeing
:02:38. > :02:48.the chequered flag a couple of minutes ago. It has been withdrawn.
:02:49. > :02:55.He's had to make a detour in the pits but having said that, Querrey
:02:56. > :03:00.has still got to serve this out. This set is not done yet. But if we
:03:01. > :03:05.get to 2-1 both these players actually have very interesting
:03:06. > :03:13.records in five set matches. Of course Raonic came back from two
:03:14. > :03:14.sets down to win his last round. Could the worm turned completely
:03:15. > :03:27.here? Mr Querrey is challenging the call,
:03:28. > :03:37.the ball was called out. Fractionally wide, I think.
:03:38. > :04:25.Mr Querrey has two challenges remaining. First serve badly
:04:26. > :04:48.required. Raonic let him off, there. He put a
:04:49. > :04:49.little extra on that, worldwide. Raonic just couldn't catch up with
:04:50. > :05:00.it. -- out wide. Now it's Querrey two points from
:05:01. > :05:24.taking us into a fourth set. Welcomer Raonic berating himself for
:05:25. > :05:31.making the wrong choice, there. He's really berating himself for
:05:32. > :05:55.what happened in the game before. It was called out by the line judge
:05:56. > :06:03.and by the umpire. And that is in, somehow. It's all about fine
:06:04. > :06:10.margins. And by the finest of margins, Sam Querrey is still in
:06:11. > :06:14.this match. STUDIO: So, Sam Querrey right back in this match, he takes
:06:15. > :06:18.the third set. We will be back on this court in just the moment.
:06:19. > :06:23.Something similar happened on Centre Court. Roger Federer is right back
:06:24. > :06:27.in it as well. He was 0-40 down in his service game in the third set,
:06:28. > :06:32.held onto his serve and then broke Cilic, and went on to take it 6-3.
:06:33. > :06:37.The seven time champion fighting hard on Centre Court but still two
:06:38. > :06:46.sets to one down to Marion Cilic. That matches live over on BBC One.
:06:47. > :06:50.Out on court 18, Britain's Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Suarez
:06:51. > :06:55.are in trouble, two sets down to the French pair. And they are number
:06:56. > :07:01.three seeds. So, that match is on the red button. So, a lot still
:07:02. > :07:03.happening here at Wimbledon. Everybody enjoying the tennis on
:07:04. > :07:09.Henman Hill, and plenty more to come. Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried
:07:10. > :07:16.Tsonga next, but let's rejoin Court One. COMMENTATOR: Well, to use a
:07:17. > :07:26.phrase that is often used, didn't see that coming. No, but when you're
:07:27. > :07:31.in the position that Raonic was in, playing the match of your life, and
:07:32. > :07:36.very close to closing it out, sometimes, it can be more difficult
:07:37. > :07:42.than you might anticipate. Querrey did well, raised his play, raised
:07:43. > :07:50.his level of play. Went to net on a few more occasions, and Raonic
:07:51. > :08:03.perhaps missed a few more returns than... Oh boy. Got lucky, there.
:08:04. > :08:05.Missed a few more returns than he had been missing. He had been
:08:06. > :08:22.returning exceptionally well. That was straight out of the meat of
:08:23. > :08:30.the racket from Querrey, there. It's interesting, we haven't really seen
:08:31. > :08:40.Raonic armload on first serves. We haven't seen that too often. No. A
:08:41. > :08:47.loss of 118, 120 mph serves. But that must have been the preordained
:08:48. > :08:50.tactic with the absent John McEnroe saying you don't need to whack them
:08:51. > :09:01.down. Your service good enough anyway.
:09:02. > :09:06.That's a great shot and up until the key moment in the first set it had
:09:07. > :09:48.been. Yes. Said Querrey's main hope, only hope,
:09:49. > :09:53.was that Raonic's level dropped, and it most definitely has done that.
:09:54. > :09:58.Just fractionally, but just enough to give him a chance, again, of
:09:59. > :10:11.looking to break what seemed an unbreakable serve.
:10:12. > :10:17.Well, we saw in the Queen 's final when Raonic finally did drop serve
:10:18. > :10:22.against Andy Murray he went on to drop it three more times in short
:10:23. > :10:42.order. Needs to guard against that, now.
:10:43. > :10:48.That roar was from Raonic. It was a great serve. Took speed off it.
:10:49. > :10:51.Second serve essentially with a high kick. Querrey just never got over
:10:52. > :11:40.it. This game has been engrossing from
:11:41. > :11:54.the word go but actually there is real tension in it, now.
:11:55. > :12:01.Well, playing on the finest margins, there. And he'll be relieved to have
:12:02. > :12:12.held serve, there. Not messing around, are they? The
:12:13. > :12:18.speed of play has been a delight. Couldn't agree more. So nice to see
:12:19. > :12:25.a couple of guys just get on with it. And it's a hot day, too. Not
:12:26. > :12:30.like it's been for the preceding nine days. Hot would be
:12:31. > :12:35.exaggerating, but it is warm. I'm sure those of you watching this on
:12:36. > :12:42.the West Coast of America and if I tell you it is 20 or 21 degrees, you
:12:43. > :12:50.will be going "That's called!" . That sweater weather. -- that's
:12:51. > :14:07.cold. Well they are both playing some great tennis at the moment.
:14:08. > :14:13.If that Paul had hit Raonic it would have been Querrey's point -- is that
:14:14. > :14:31.ball. Momentary lapse in concentration.
:14:32. > :14:47.That is Querrey's first double fault of the match.
:14:48. > :14:53.Obviously it is a huge sporting day from a British perspective today,
:14:54. > :14:56.Wales against Portugal tonight in the semifinals of the European
:14:57. > :15:09.football Championships. You can always make analogies
:15:10. > :15:24.between different sports but this game at the moment... If Querrey is
:15:25. > :15:30.Wales and Raonic is Portugal, you could be two goals down and the
:15:31. > :15:34.opposition have had 95% of possession, but you get one chance,
:15:35. > :15:36.sneak a goal, you can still win 3-2 and that's what Querrey is thinking
:15:37. > :16:07.at the moment. Ye of little faith. Your Welsh
:16:08. > :16:19.brothers! I'm saying they are going to win 3-2 from 2-0 down! But
:16:20. > :16:21.conceded 95% of possession? I don't buy that. Just look at the final
:16:22. > :16:40.score, that's all that counts. You got any Welsh blood in you? Who
:16:41. > :17:19.knows?! Straight from the clay of Roland
:17:20. > :18:07.Garros. And every set, because of the nature
:18:08. > :18:09.of how the sets have gone, follows a similar pattern to the one before
:18:10. > :18:19.with Raonic serving and Querrey chasing his tail. Which is harder on
:18:20. > :18:26.the man serving second, isn't it? It is. Undeniably. Any time you face a
:18:27. > :18:34.break point towards the latter end of the set it becomes a set point.
:18:35. > :18:38.Just that much more pressure. Also something subliminal with always
:18:39. > :18:51.being behind. Just doesn't feel as comfortable. As always being had. --
:18:52. > :18:56.being ahead. Raonic at the moment at least is not winning serves in a
:18:57. > :19:00.minute to love in the way that he was for the majority of the first
:19:01. > :19:07.three sets, so that will give some encouragement to Querrey, at least.
:19:08. > :19:12.And for both sets of coaching teams it's, well, agonising, unbearable.
:19:13. > :19:18.Never quite sure how much enjoyment there is, actually, in being up
:19:19. > :19:24.there, playing every shot. Inwardly thinking, why did you do that? We
:19:25. > :19:26.said not to do that. Of course that's the nature of this sport. In
:19:27. > :19:50.the end it is just these two guys. Yeah, enjoyment probably doesn't
:19:51. > :19:53.explain the feeling. The enjoyment is a fleeting emotion on the final
:19:54. > :20:05.point when your man has won. That was well played by Querrey,
:20:06. > :20:24.wrong footing and then the put away. That was almost the end of the
:20:25. > :21:06.centreline Court judge, there. Oh, boy. Well, query had this game
:21:07. > :21:08.in his pocket and now suddenly Raonic is back in its -- Querrey had
:21:09. > :21:32.this game in his pocket. Raonic is right back in it. That's a
:21:33. > :21:44.real dip from Querrey, a second double fault.
:21:45. > :22:07.You can see Raonic leaping up and down on the baseline, there.
:22:08. > :22:31.He was on it. Just a slight miscalculation.
:22:32. > :22:43.Raonic... Querrey's first serve percentage has dipped down to 55%,
:22:44. > :22:46.now. Which obviously means Raonic will get a look at more second
:22:47. > :23:14.thoughts, and that gave him the chance to do that.
:23:15. > :23:18.You might have questioned whether Querrey had the touch to play a lob
:23:19. > :23:38.like that, but he did in the end. And he throws his eyes to the
:23:39. > :23:42.heavens, Querrey, there. Because he's allowing Raonic to stay in this
:23:43. > :23:54.game with two double faults. And a first serve percentage that
:23:55. > :24:18.keeps tumbling. Insets one and two, all those shots
:24:19. > :24:37.went in. Not so now. -- in sets one and two.
:24:38. > :24:43.Phew, says Sam Querrey. Got that gain over with!
:24:44. > :24:53.-- that game. It feels as though this has been going on for a very
:24:54. > :24:58.long time but it is only two hours and 12 minutes. We haven't even got
:24:59. > :25:04.to half past three in the afternoon yet and we could have a lot, lot
:25:05. > :25:11.more to come. I agree with you. Flying along. For much of the first
:25:12. > :25:31.three sets. More errors being made now on the
:25:32. > :25:40.ground strokes. The quality of the match should have dipped marginally
:25:41. > :25:47.in the last 15 minutes. Yeah, with mental fatigue. You know, there was
:25:48. > :25:50.no way to expect Raonic to maintain that level of play. For, you know,
:25:51. > :26:06.more than two hours. Which isn't to say that he can't
:26:07. > :26:07.rekindle it at some point, soon. That's how he was serving an hour
:26:08. > :26:19.ago. That's how he was serving an hour
:26:20. > :26:50.ago. It's poised on a knife edge. But you
:26:51. > :26:54.would still rather be in the Raonic camp than the Querrey one. Yeah.
:26:55. > :27:03.Raonic perhaps needs to reenergise just a little bit. He came out so
:27:04. > :27:09.red-hot. And the longer you play better than you've ever played, you
:27:10. > :27:10.know, the more you start to think, well, how long can I keep this up
:27:11. > :27:47.for? These are the lucky ones on Court
:27:48. > :27:50.One seeing an enthralling contest between Milos Raonic and Sam
:27:51. > :27:58.Querrey. Been so much more to this than just big serving.
:27:59. > :28:02.Querrey needs to rediscover his first serve and his touch on shots
:28:03. > :28:18.like that, as well. If you have just joined us, Raonic
:28:19. > :28:22.was playing some extraordinary, exemplary tennis for two sets and
:28:23. > :28:39.seven eighths of a set. And Querrey, who was all but out for
:28:40. > :28:40.the count, landed one punch at the end of the third set, and that's why
:28:41. > :29:05.we are here in the fourth. That slice from Raonic served him so
:29:06. > :29:08.well earlier in the match. Yeah, again, the old school style. Pays
:29:09. > :29:32.dividends from Raonic. Querry's first serve returns with a
:29:33. > :30:02.vengeance. Oh! That was like a tracer bullet
:30:03. > :30:14.from the racket of the American. He physically could not have time to
:30:15. > :30:43.that better. -- timed. That's a pretty nice response. That
:30:44. > :31:17.service never coming back. Querrey leads the ace contest at the moment.
:31:18. > :31:40.It was called out, it might just be out. What a rally, though.
:31:41. > :32:13.A big smile on Sam Querrey's face. Not surprisingly.
:32:14. > :32:27.It wasn't an easy attempt. To be fair, it was 115 mph, second serve,
:32:28. > :32:49.out wide. But Querrey would have liked to have put that into play.
:32:50. > :33:00.We're at the umpire's chair, because we think we know the answer. Again,
:33:01. > :33:01.the tiniest of margins. A beautifully struck ball by Sam
:33:02. > :33:17.Querrey, but it went wide. With every passing game, we get ever
:33:18. > :33:25.closer to the moment of truth from Sam Querrey's point of view. Who is
:33:26. > :33:34.playing best at the moment, of these two, do you think? I would say it is
:33:35. > :33:38.neck and neck, right now. I think that Querrey has pegged Raonic back
:33:39. > :33:46.a little bit. It was always going to be difficult for Raonic to play the
:33:47. > :33:49.way he did in set one and two throughout. But he's still showing a
:33:50. > :33:56.great deal of skill at the forecourt. Look at that. When he
:33:57. > :34:01.went back to play that shot, I was thinking of being on centre with
:34:02. > :34:20.Andy Murray and George was Raonic is so much more of a complete
:34:21. > :34:28.player that he knew this was the option, even though he narrowly
:34:29. > :34:30.missed. He likes to play the percentages, Raonic, because that is
:34:31. > :34:49.the sort of player that he is. Querrey served two double faults in
:34:50. > :34:52.the last service game and somehow extricated himself from that. But
:34:53. > :35:11.that is not a good way to start this.
:35:12. > :35:18.He tried to wrong-foot him on the volley, but it's gone wrong. Well,
:35:19. > :35:21.defence has never been what Raonic has been known for. What an
:35:22. > :36:40.exceptional defensive backhand. Another lovely slice from Raonic,
:36:41. > :36:50.set up that opportunity. Querrey will be disappointed by the volley.
:36:51. > :36:55.We played virtually two and a half sets, without any game is getting to
:36:56. > :37:22.deuce, now we have a glut of them. Goodness. What a staggering clean
:37:23. > :37:44.hit from Raonic that was. That is well played by Querrey. Must
:37:45. > :38:05.be feeling the pressure now. His service games are not just going
:38:06. > :38:09.to deuce once, sometimes two, three, four deuces. One break of serve
:38:10. > :38:17.here, you can be pretty sure, would be enough for Raonic. So, Sam hangs
:38:18. > :38:27.on in there, in style, with that backhand down the line.
:38:28. > :38:39.You can just feel the heart rate going up, ever so slightly, on all
:38:40. > :39:18.fronts. Raonic, Querrey, the crowd. Us.
:39:19. > :39:42.A gallant, if abortive effort from Querrey.
:39:43. > :39:46.This is back to the kind of service game that Raonic was delivering in
:39:47. > :40:06.the early stages of this match. And so it is a straightforward hold
:40:07. > :40:22.to love. Sam Querrey will serve to stay in
:40:23. > :40:29.the match, to stay in Wimbledon, to stay in with a chance of reaching
:40:30. > :40:36.the semifinals. That last game was just what the doctor ordered. If you
:40:37. > :40:41.are looking at it from Raonic's perspective, things have slipped
:40:42. > :40:50.away from him ever so slightly over the last set and a half. So, in
:40:51. > :41:01.preparation for these more fraught games to come, more pressurised
:41:02. > :41:06.games, to get into these four and five games, having held to love,
:41:07. > :41:11.it's a great advantage. It allows Raonic to settle and say, all right,
:41:12. > :41:17.life is good still. Now let's pump it up, pump up your energy and
:41:18. > :41:23.focus, really make a push to break here.
:41:24. > :41:29.Two and a half hours of tennis we have had so far. Raonic's first
:41:30. > :41:34.service game took a minute or so. For two and a half minutes, Sam
:41:35. > :41:39.Querrey has spent the entire match serving from behind. The first set,
:41:40. > :41:41.second set, the third set and now in the fourth, serving to stay in the
:41:42. > :42:03.match. Querrey will be thinking that was a
:42:04. > :42:08.kind of nothing point, such a key moment.
:42:09. > :42:18.And that is a something point. That's a big something for Raonic.
:42:19. > :42:49.Did take him out of court, which forced Raonic to go for the winner.
:42:50. > :43:03.Still, he was on it. He was 0-30 in the previous game,
:43:04. > :43:08.but the more you keep finding yourself in that situation, the more
:43:09. > :43:16.the pressure mounts. Double fault number five from Sam Querrey means,
:43:17. > :43:26.after two hours and 31 minutes, Milos Raonic from Canada's stands on
:43:27. > :43:32.the cusp of the Wimbledon semifinals.
:43:33. > :43:55.For two sets and three quarters, he played the most blistering tennis.
:43:56. > :44:01.Querrey, back into the match with a brave finish to the third set. In
:44:02. > :44:04.the end, deservedly so, the number six seed from Canada is through to
:44:05. > :44:12.the semifinals on Friday. Nobody will fancy meeting him between now
:44:13. > :44:20.and the end of this tournament. And, of course, he awaits the winner of
:44:21. > :44:24.that Cilic and Federer match. As you say, it was for two and a half sets,
:44:25. > :44:31.without question, the best tennis I have seen Raonic play. The best
:44:32. > :44:37.attacking tennis. He was coming forward, hitting deft volley
:44:38. > :44:44.winners. But this man, Sam Querrey, pegged him back. Had it not been for
:44:45. > :44:48.just three errant games that Querrey played, one at the end of the first
:44:49. > :44:52.set, one at the end of the second, one at the end of the fourth, this
:44:53. > :45:00.match would still be going on. Querrey, in fact, might be up. So,
:45:01. > :45:08.Raonic beats the man who beat Djokovic. If you are watching the
:45:09. > :45:15.Queen's Tournament, three weeks ago, you will have got a sense that Milos
:45:16. > :45:20.Raonic was starting to become really at home on grass. He was 4-1 up
:45:21. > :45:25.against Andy Murray in the final, Worrell two points here or there,
:45:26. > :45:29.who is to say that Raonic might not have won that? The spectre of the
:45:30. > :45:31.feast is a John McEnroe, commentating on Court One at the
:45:32. > :45:39.moment on Roger Federer against Marin Cilic. I am sure he will know
:45:40. > :45:46.the result of this match. There will be a big smile on his face. Clearly,
:45:47. > :45:52.he has had a considerable, maybe subliminal effect on the Raonic
:45:53. > :45:58.mentality, the Raonic game, and has made him now a contender with a
:45:59. > :46:04.capital C Micro. Not subliminal at all. That is the most fun, the most
:46:05. > :46:14.enjoyable part of their time together, John talking to them about
:46:15. > :46:24.life, tennis, about competing. It has clearly have a positive impact
:46:25. > :46:30.on him. Those are the facts and figures. We thought we were
:46:31. > :46:34.guaranteed at least one tie-break. We didn't get one. Would we have a
:46:35. > :46:40.winner, and he is from Canada. Congratulations on your victory, you
:46:41. > :46:44.are through. An intriguing match? It was. There were some momentum
:46:45. > :46:48.shifts, break point all the way to the end of that third set and all of
:46:49. > :46:51.a sudden he gets the break, holds out for that set and has another one
:46:52. > :46:55.at the start of the fourth. I was glad I was able to get back onto my
:46:56. > :47:00.right path and get the win. That is when you had to be really mentally
:47:01. > :47:05.strong, you used a couple of keywords, momentum shift? It is
:47:06. > :47:08.something that has helped me out a lot, with my previous round, being
:47:09. > :47:15.able to change things around, this time, it getting back on my terms.
:47:16. > :47:19.Good to be here and have a shot at the semifinal. Described the
:47:20. > :47:23.excitement, being through to the semifinals and knowing you are one
:47:24. > :47:27.win away? It's exciting and also humbling at the same time. You have
:47:28. > :47:30.to get that win. I'm going to go out there and give it everything I've
:47:31. > :47:36.got, hope for a better result than last time. You are working a bit
:47:37. > :47:40.with John McEnroe, what has he added to your game? He has added a bit of
:47:41. > :47:45.a mean a change on the court, maybe a bit more positive, getting more
:47:46. > :47:49.energy out of myself so I don't disappear for too long through a
:47:50. > :47:52.match. Obviously I volleyed great today, so I think he has helped me
:47:53. > :47:56.with that as well. Very well done, thank you.
:47:57. > :48:08.So, Milos Raonic from Canada is through to the semifinals. It's
:48:09. > :48:16.nearly four o'clock, so that is 11 o'clock Eastern seaboard time, in
:48:17. > :48:21.Canada. Breakfast time on Victoria and Vancouver Island, and elsewhere.
:48:22. > :48:24.They will be delighted that the maple leaf is flying so powerfully
:48:25. > :48:34.and so strongly here at Wimbledon this year. A final thought, Peter,
:48:35. > :48:37.can he win this now? Absolutely. Absolutely. Will he? Who knows. Tune
:48:38. > :48:48.in on Friday! Raonic absolutely delighted, he is
:48:49. > :48:52.through to the semifinals at Wimbledon. That happened on Court
:48:53. > :48:58.One. Over on Centre Court, right now, he will be facing the win of
:48:59. > :49:02.the match between Federer and Cilic. This is an incredible fourth set
:49:03. > :49:07.tie-break. Federer had a set point and missed it, Cilic has had match
:49:08. > :49:18.points and let them go. This is live on BBC One. Cilic leading seven sets
:49:19. > :49:23.to one. Packed on Henman Hill, as it is on Court 18, where we are going
:49:24. > :49:31.out to see Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Bruno Suarez. They are
:49:32. > :49:34.2-0 down and they have saved some match points, taking that tie-break
:49:35. > :49:38.in the third set. Fighting hard again. They came through a long
:49:39. > :49:39.match in their last match but they are fighting hard. Let's join this
:49:40. > :49:52.one live. The third seeds could have been out
:49:53. > :49:57.by now, but they aren't. They have fended off a couple of match points
:49:58. > :50:04.as they joined forces together at Wimbledon for the first time. They
:50:05. > :50:11.arrived as Australian champions. They beat Radek Stepanek and Daniel
:50:12. > :50:24.Nestor. They have been almost unbreakable
:50:25. > :50:34.after the tie-break, and finally they did crack in the tie-break. It
:50:35. > :50:38.was quite a turnaround, momentum yo-yoing everywhere. They are still
:50:39. > :50:44.very much afloat. These two in your picture are playing terrific serve
:50:45. > :50:53.and volley tennis. They are just like a wall, unblemished, the French
:50:54. > :51:23.team. Neither of them conceding any break points against themselves.
:51:24. > :51:30.You do wonder, with how well these two have played throughout, after
:51:31. > :51:31.two and a half hours, if there might be a little let down after the loss
:51:32. > :52:01.of that very tight third set. Worrell two viewers as old as me and
:52:02. > :52:07.Paul will recognise Edouard Roger-Vasselin's dad, Christophe. He
:52:08. > :52:18.lost in the semifinals, to the eventual winner.
:52:19. > :52:28.So, a guard is here watching his son. And a mum -- a dad is watching
:52:29. > :52:31.his son, a man was watching her son, but Judy Murray might have other
:52:32. > :52:33.things on her mind. She is back. I wondered if she had gone to Centre
:52:34. > :52:53.Court, but she is back in his seat. One of those difficult parental
:52:54. > :52:54.questions. If the youngest son wanders onto Centre Court, she can't
:52:55. > :53:20.be in two places at once. They have settled themselves well
:53:21. > :53:31.enough after the concession of that third set.
:53:32. > :53:38.Very calm, the Frenchman winning at 6-4, 6-4. They have their
:53:39. > :53:43.opportunities to do this in straight sets. The luxury they now have is
:53:44. > :53:48.that they started serving in this fourth set. That almost compounds
:53:49. > :53:50.the pressure onto the third seeds of Murray and Soares, who are
:53:51. > :53:58.constantly playing catch-up, you will. They have been so solid, these
:53:59. > :54:07.two. Edouard Roger-Vasselin just opting to take off his cap.
:54:08. > :54:30.The man keeping it on is Jamie Murray, with new balls.
:54:31. > :54:38.Jamie Murray, right now, the best doubles player in the world. Ranked
:54:39. > :54:44.at number one. A fantastic scrap going on between him and Nicolas
:54:45. > :54:47.Mahut. A handful of points separating them. A decent finalist
:54:48. > :54:58.here last year. Looking to get the semifinals once again.
:54:59. > :55:06.He is opting to dispatch the shades, temporarily. The sun has gone behind
:55:07. > :55:07.a bit of a fluffy cloud, above. We have had gorgeous weather today.
:55:08. > :55:34.Long may it continue. Bruno Soares has been under pressure
:55:35. > :55:39.on his own serve. He has yielded once in each of the opening two sets
:55:40. > :56:06.in his service games. Jamie has remained intact.
:56:07. > :56:31.Roger-Vasselin and three Mac are the first winners here since the 80s.
:56:32. > :56:37.One of the features of this match has been how effective Jamie has
:56:38. > :56:42.been when he has got tied to the net. A wonderful way to neutralise
:56:43. > :56:47.the point. But how fast he is, in response, to close the net down and
:56:48. > :56:55.create the angle. Benneteau buckling under that one.
:56:56. > :57:02.This is what they have been doing so well, they have been serving
:57:03. > :57:05.fantastically when they need to. So good under pressure, the French team
:57:06. > :57:17.today, in both serve and return. Julien Benneteau, the 24-year-old
:57:18. > :57:42.Parisian. Jamie Murray, who turned 30 in
:57:43. > :57:46.February. Jamie Murray OBE now, rewarded in the Queen's birthday
:57:47. > :57:53.honours. He said that as soon as he opened the envelope, the race was on
:57:54. > :57:56.for the knighthood! Oh, confusion. They have only played five
:57:57. > :58:02.tournaments together. They have had great effect and won multiple
:58:03. > :58:16.titles, but this rare occasion, yours!
:58:17. > :58:29.That lady was on the gangway, the ball bounced up a lady's skirt,
:58:30. > :58:32.there, to her shock. This is the quarterfinals of the Men's Doubles.
:58:33. > :58:43.We are going to have a new winners this year, because last year's
:58:44. > :58:52.champions were upset in the first round.
:58:53. > :59:10.Nicolas Mahut, we are talking about the battle he is having with Jamie
:59:11. > :59:14.Murray for the number one spot, Max Mirnyi as well, it is a very
:59:15. > :59:22.wide-open contest this year. Murray and Soares have kept themselves
:59:23. > :59:29.right in it, with the winning of that third set. Here we are, the
:59:30. > :59:35.beautifully appointed court 18, right on the Hill, next to Henman
:59:36. > :59:36.Hill, Murray Mount between Centre Court and caught one. It has been
:59:37. > :59:52.packed from the start. Bait ousted the ninth seeds and also
:59:53. > :00:31.the eighth seeds, so they are on form, the French.
:00:32. > :00:35.Bruno Soares, proud owner of 22 doubles titles down the years. The
:00:36. > :00:45.latest the Australian Open with Murray. Well, it was a very short
:00:46. > :00:50.serve from Bruno Soares, who, at five feet and 11 inches, is the
:00:51. > :00:54.shortest man on court. On occasion he can drop a little low in power
:00:55. > :01:02.and be a taxable as a consequence but not so at the moment. He's
:01:03. > :01:09.really sprung to life. Of course these two serving and a good result
:01:10. > :01:11.in Rio earlier this year, semifinal. This time when they go to Rio, soon,
:01:12. > :01:50.they won't be playing together. You were talking about how,
:01:51. > :01:54.tactically, doubles has moved on in recent times, and the return of
:01:55. > :01:58.serve is something that some of the coaches might talk about. In this
:01:59. > :02:02.power obsessed world there are more subtleties coming into doubles. The
:02:03. > :02:06.Bryan brothers were discussing the fact the lob return is much more
:02:07. > :02:14.prevalent. Jamie has been using a few of them. And on tap, on cue,
:02:15. > :02:20.rather. Couldn't follow up, though. That's a shame because it's a great
:02:21. > :02:25.tactical ploy. But the French have been really countering it very well,
:02:26. > :02:29.it has to be said. Ms drive volleys and good communication, good
:02:30. > :02:33.smashing from them. It certainly changes the look. And that's what
:02:34. > :02:49.good doubles is all about, changing the scenery. And I really have been
:02:50. > :02:52.impressed with his team in this quarterfinal clash of grand slam
:02:53. > :03:00.champion is because they've been so versatile. Soares and have done so
:03:01. > :03:07.much in terms of changing up and changing the picture. Soares has
:03:08. > :03:08.even stood back on first serves. They have just been superbly
:03:09. > :03:27.resilient. Nothing has phased them. I think that in the pre-serve
:03:28. > :03:31.discussion when Benneteau decided he was going to close he didn't realise
:03:32. > :03:35.that Jamie Murray was going to strike a forehand return of that
:03:36. > :03:50.quality. Slow off the mark, the Frenchman, there.
:03:51. > :03:58.Good idea, poor execution from Bruno. But it keeps the net players
:03:59. > :04:03.guessing. It means that Benneteau at the net will not pounce so quickly
:04:04. > :04:14.forward. He will wait back and as a consequence he cannot create so much
:04:15. > :04:22.angle. Jamie had the best lurk at this one and he thought it was wide,
:04:23. > :04:42.hence the challenge -- best look. Hawk-Eye agrees with the Scot.
:04:43. > :04:48.STUDIO: We are leaving this match on Court 18 because we have another of
:04:49. > :04:52.the men's quarterfinals starting on Court Number One. But if you want to
:04:53. > :04:58.continue watching you can, it's on the red button. You can follow
:04:59. > :05:02.Murray and Soares on the red button. We'll keep you up-to-date with it
:05:03. > :05:06.here as well. Before we go to Court One, let's take you to Centre Court
:05:07. > :05:11.and all the drama of the fourth set tie-break which Federer won 11-9
:05:12. > :05:15.with set points and match points all over the place. Such drama. It has
:05:16. > :05:21.all come down and it is back on serve in the fifth and final set.
:05:22. > :05:26.But who will come out on top? Cilic in your picture, or Federer? But we
:05:27. > :05:30.are heading back to Court Number One has Tomas Berdych, in your picture,
:05:31. > :05:35.is taking on Lucas Pouille, playing in his first Grand Slam
:05:36. > :05:43.quarterfinal. Let's join the commentators.
:05:44. > :05:50.COMMENTATOR: Fairly sparsely populated Court One at the moment.
:05:51. > :05:55.Get the feeling things are happening elsewhere. But a fascinating
:05:56. > :06:01.quarterfinal in prospect between this rising talent, the 22-year-old
:06:02. > :06:21.Frenchman, youngest man left in the Men's Singles.
:06:22. > :06:29.Not exactly a buzz yet on Court One. You can see people a bit of a break
:06:30. > :06:55.after the previous quarterfinal. Started confidently enough in this
:06:56. > :07:34.game but Pouille giving Berdych a bit of a look, here.
:07:35. > :07:40.Goodspeed from Berdych once he gets going up to full running speed, he
:07:41. > :07:50.can shift. Didn't think he was going to make this, and he got to it quite
:07:51. > :08:21.comfortably. There that whip. Got that ball down nice and quickly.
:08:22. > :08:28.So there it is, eventually. Bit of a struggle at times but eventually an
:08:29. > :08:33.opening hold of serve for Lucas Pouille the. Mentioned he will be an
:08:34. > :08:37.unfamiliar name to lots of you watching, still just 22 and he has
:08:38. > :08:40.crept up there, there has not been anything explosive leaping onto the
:08:41. > :08:44.scene, he has just made gradual progress. This is his breakthrough
:08:45. > :08:49.in a major, getting to a court of final. In a rich crop of French
:08:50. > :08:53.talent. From the outskirts of Dunkirk, right in the north of
:08:54. > :08:59.France, about as far north as you can get in France, Belgian border.
:09:00. > :09:29.There is his guiding coach, who used to work with Toro among others.
:09:30. > :09:39.Reid Mr Pouille challenging the call, the ball was called in.
:09:40. > :10:06.Not a bad start. Obviously very nervous. Seen it all before. Killing
:10:07. > :10:22.as he has. Seen it all before. Yes, he has.
:10:23. > :10:31.Near enough a perfect service game. Four points, three aces. Tomas
:10:32. > :10:35.Berdych, he really has come into these quarterfinals under the radar.
:10:36. > :10:40.No one has talked about him and he's got great grass court pedigree. But
:10:41. > :10:42.no one expects him to sort of be a threat and here he is in the
:10:43. > :11:10.quarterfinals. Ooh, wonderful work by Berdych.
:11:11. > :11:18.Nearly some great wrong footing by Pouille. Class point from both
:11:19. > :11:21.players. Excellent drop volley, and Pouille, didn't think he was going
:11:22. > :11:24.to get that, just about wrong-footed. Berdych can pick those
:11:25. > :11:52.shots up. Quite often he was pressurised on
:11:53. > :13:29.his own serve by Tomic in the last round, but always responded well.
:13:30. > :13:40.That's a bit better. Just having to graft a bit on his own serve at the
:13:41. > :13:41.moment. Started slowly against Tomic and got better and better as the
:13:42. > :14:19.match went on. Nerves for Pouille in this situation
:14:20. > :14:43.would be perfectly understandable. Just too easy for Berdych. Second
:14:44. > :14:48.serve from Pouille is just sitting a little bit and the moment. Not much
:14:49. > :15:12.really on that. Plenty of time for Berdych.
:15:13. > :15:47.Nicely finished off by Berdych, who is controlling things a bit better
:15:48. > :15:52.at the moment than Pouille. These ground strokes have been very solid
:15:53. > :15:58.so far. I know the match only just started, but looks very comfortable
:15:59. > :16:00.on both wings. Excellent point, set it up dutifully for that volley to
:16:01. > :16:22.finish the point. Break point. Frustration for Berdych, got himself
:16:23. > :16:25.slightly out of position. Clements, partner of Pouille, everywhere he
:16:26. > :16:43.plays. Ooh, what a shot. That was 50-50
:16:44. > :16:48.which way he was going to move, bed, and he gambled. He picked the right
:16:49. > :16:59.spot, gambled, and that is a magnificent passing shot.
:17:00. > :17:13.Break point seen off in emphatic fashion.
:17:14. > :18:05.Attritional stuff early in this match. Berdych having sailed through
:18:06. > :18:35.his service game. Pouille with the struggles.
:18:36. > :18:41.Just not enough punch. The speed was good on the second serve. But he's
:18:42. > :18:47.just not really getting it in the right place. Enough time for Berdych
:18:48. > :18:56.just to get round, hit a forehand away.
:18:57. > :19:31.Early breakthrough for Tomas Berdych. Took some time but he has
:19:32. > :19:35.it. Talked about how unfamiliar some of you might be with Lucas Pouille,
:19:36. > :19:40.but Tomas Berdych is a very, very familiar figure, of course. Been a
:19:41. > :19:44.fixture in the top ten in the world since 2010. And that was a great
:19:45. > :19:53.season for him. He reached the final, here. Lost that one sided
:19:54. > :19:57.affair to Nadal, but had beaten Federer en route. Also a
:19:58. > :20:01.semifinalist in the French Open that year. You mentioned him coming under
:20:02. > :20:07.the radar, he's just not had a good season. He sacked his coach, who had
:20:08. > :20:13.been with Andy Murray. He got thumped by David Coffin, it was 6-0,
:20:14. > :20:18.6-0. So sort of doing things more on his own now. It just wasn't good
:20:19. > :20:21.enough. And he is a player who should be performing better than
:20:22. > :20:25.that. Hasn't reached a final this year. Know, and you look at in just
:20:26. > :20:31.over the years and think, what he does, he does well. But you never
:20:32. > :20:34.think of him as having different game plans. If something goes wrong
:20:35. > :20:46.he's very sort of straight, he hits it very well. His wife watching on
:20:47. > :20:50.as Berdych has the breakthrough. And more and more people joining us here
:20:51. > :20:54.on Court One. We welcome the company. Players waiting for them to
:20:55. > :21:20.settle down. Both players reading it well.
:21:21. > :22:16.Berdych read that one well, but Pouille read that one.
:22:17. > :22:58.Certain amount of noise drifting over from Centre Court.
:22:59. > :23:08.Well, bring on the front foot now. Great chance to hit back. I liked
:23:09. > :23:12.the way in rally there were some nice change apps from Pouille. It
:23:13. > :23:18.wasn't all about power, he varied the pace -- change-ups. Three break
:23:19. > :24:44.points for Pouille to draw level. Well, what a contrast to the opening
:24:45. > :24:53.service game from Berdych when he fired down three aces, helped to
:24:54. > :24:59.love. -- held. And that was a pretty wretched service game. It was awful.
:25:00. > :25:01.Almost like he was a bit flat the way he was gesturing to them, there.
:25:02. > :25:06.Not much energy. Could be a reaction to that sort of
:25:07. > :25:34.interrupted match in the last round. And all this will just fill Pouille
:25:35. > :26:15.with a bit more confidence. Just looks a bit bewildered at the
:26:16. > :26:21.moment. Don't know what it is, but he does look a bit flat. Needs 2G
:26:22. > :26:31.himself up a bit, here. -- he needs to gee himself up.
:26:32. > :27:11.I think something is happening elsewhere. Stay with us.
:27:12. > :27:24.So, Pouille holds and noses himself in front in this set. Fired down a
:27:25. > :27:31.good few double faults already. But we are on serve and Pouille
:27:32. > :27:37.certainly looks a lot stronger now. A few more spectators coming in. Up
:27:38. > :27:40.at the top of the picture there on Court Number One. All sorts of fun
:27:41. > :27:51.and games happening on Centre Court and out on the Hill, of course.
:27:52. > :27:56.Don't want to give any spoilers, give anything away. Guest. If you
:27:57. > :28:01.are a Federer fan you are going to be quite happy. Around the estate.
:28:02. > :28:10.Court number 18, the broadcast centre. What a difference it makes
:28:11. > :28:16.as well to have some good weather. Last week was rather miserable. All
:28:17. > :28:30.caught up now to men's quarterfinal day and the hill is full.
:28:31. > :28:34.Not sure if Pouille just called for the trainer, he had a little chat
:28:35. > :29:03.with the umpire. Just one if it's something to do
:29:04. > :29:08.with the fact he had his right foot heavily strapped in his last match.
:29:09. > :29:54.With Tomic. Might be something to do with that.
:29:55. > :31:16.It was either a very good second serve or a double. Double fault.
:31:17. > :31:23.Again, on that line. A very different Tomas Berdych now.
:31:24. > :31:55.Another chance to break for Lucas Pouille.
:31:56. > :32:02.It's not a massive serve, Berdych's, for a huge man. He is six foot five
:32:03. > :32:28.to start off with, it's coming down from quite a height.
:32:29. > :32:40.Eventually closes it out well, Berdych. But little things to
:32:41. > :32:43.encourage Pouille. Berdych was a bit erratic, wasn't he? Searching, the
:32:44. > :33:00.moment. The bottom line is he even. Obvious pressure for Pouille, he's
:33:01. > :33:05.not used to a situation like a Grand Slam quarterfinal. But there also is
:33:06. > :33:12.for Berdych, he is expected to win here and he knows he should if he
:33:13. > :33:17.hits his best. A great opportunity for him to start his season.
:33:18. > :33:38.Semifinals at Wimbledon, who knows, beyond that.
:33:39. > :33:58.Neither player looking to solid at the moment.
:33:59. > :35:37.So, Lucas Pouille has the hold. I think a trainer is about to appear.
:35:38. > :35:47.I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is that right foot. It's moving
:35:48. > :35:55.well, I haven't seen anything where he has polled perhaps not. -- where
:35:56. > :36:02.he has pulled up. Perhaps not. It is a hand issue. We would not have
:36:03. > :36:16.noticed it. How would you? Blisters? Manicure or something? You
:36:17. > :36:25.have to look your best for the first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Just a
:36:26. > :36:32.blister on that finger. It is not exactly traumatic, is it?
:36:33. > :36:40.He will be fine. He'll live to fight another day. A quick bit of tape
:36:41. > :36:44.applied and off we go again. A lot more spectators coming in, again.
:36:45. > :36:57.The Court One crowd is filling up. A very good approach shot from
:36:58. > :39:30.Berdych. Deserved what he got. Well, a few too many unforced errors
:39:31. > :40:10.from Berdych in this first set. Hot work out there.
:40:11. > :40:26.I said it hadn't been a great season for Berdych, and it hasn't. At least
:40:27. > :40:29.in the majors, in the slams, he's popped up and something. In the
:40:30. > :40:44.majors for a third successive slams this year.
:40:45. > :42:19.Pretty comfortable at the net. This is a drive volley.
:42:20. > :42:30.Big serve when he wants to, Pouille. 131.
:42:31. > :42:47.A cagey start to the match. There has been some good, a few mistakes
:42:48. > :42:54.from both players. Pouille has every chance today against Berdych.
:42:55. > :42:58.Berdych is the higher ranked player, but doesn't look too convincing so
:42:59. > :43:03.far. He doesn't, we've got to give a lot of credit Pouille. This is
:43:04. > :43:09.uncharted territory for him. Quarterfinals, OK, it is not Centre
:43:10. > :43:12.Court, still Court Number One, the biggest occasion of his career by
:43:13. > :43:15.miles, and he has come out and settled well. Berdych had a couple
:43:16. > :43:19.of chances to get ahead and he didn't take it. Now he has allowed
:43:20. > :43:23.the Frenchman too subtle. Now he's starting to enjoy himself out here.
:43:24. > :43:27.It's tough to predict which way the match is going to go. There's not
:43:28. > :43:33.much rhythm to it yet. You would think Berdych's experience would
:43:34. > :43:39.start to come through. He looks flat today. A big afternoon for the
:43:40. > :43:46.French in the quarterfinals. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is about to get
:43:47. > :43:50.underway against Andy Murray. Lucas Pouille here. Four French men in the
:43:51. > :43:57.last 16, two of them in the quarterfinals. Gasquet is through as
:43:58. > :45:26.well. A fairly strong service game from
:45:27. > :47:11.the Number 10 seed. Beautifully done. On the back foot,
:47:12. > :47:18.saw the gap. This is the second passing shot he hit. That sort of
:47:19. > :47:19.position on the backhand side. Shoulder, just directed down the
:47:20. > :47:57.line. If he wins today, he will become the
:47:58. > :48:06.11th man to reach the semifinals on his second appearance. The most
:48:07. > :48:15.recent man to do that was Jankovic. He has had all sorts of injury
:48:16. > :48:35.problems since 2013. A great entertainer on court is here.
:48:36. > :48:44.Motherwell Football Club first did that apparently, not the Icelandic
:48:45. > :48:47.bands. Court One is getting a bit fuller with every change of ends. I
:48:48. > :48:51.know there are something else going on and you have a chance in your
:48:52. > :48:56.viewing habits. We thank you for flying with us today. Berdych
:48:57. > :49:26.serving to stay in set. It's not a match that has really
:49:27. > :49:52.caught fire yet. But we are getting to the nervous stages.
:49:53. > :51:01.Certainly of the more deliberate School of players, Berdych.
:51:02. > :51:13.So it is tie-break time in this first set.
:51:14. > :51:24.As you said, it hasn't really caught fire. But the tie-break, there is
:51:25. > :51:26.always a buzz in the crowd when that happens. We need to get a bit of
:51:27. > :51:38.atmosphere here. Berdych challenges the umpire's
:51:39. > :52:05.authority. First advantage to Berdych. He tried
:52:06. > :53:06.to be too careful on that one. He had an open court. Bad miss.
:53:07. > :53:12.A bad mistake. That was just past half court on the backside. He had
:53:13. > :53:16.enough time to get around and hit a forehand on that one. The confidence
:53:17. > :53:23.wasn't there. Didn't snap into the backhand. Is very clean and tidy
:53:24. > :53:45.start of the tie-break. They are both nervous in this
:53:46. > :54:09.tie-break. That is six double faults for Pouille in this set.
:54:10. > :54:17.Didn't move his feet. Good return, but... You always get a feeling when
:54:18. > :54:21.there is an underdog, Pouille is the underdog, that they need to win that
:54:22. > :54:27.first set. You know, to really have a good chance. You feel it is more
:54:28. > :55:02.important he wins this set than Berdych.
:55:03. > :55:13.Stumbles, but it is long. Berdych in a really commanding position now.
:55:14. > :55:25.Fortunate it was going wrong. -- long. I thought there might be a bit
:55:26. > :55:28.more of a buzz in the tie-break, but not so. It has been a cagey, untidy
:55:29. > :56:19.affair. Wonderful shot, better from both
:56:20. > :56:26.men. The final touch, a gentle caress from Lucas Pouille. There
:56:27. > :56:31.were glimpses in that point of why Pouille is in the quarterfinals.
:56:32. > :56:32.There was the variation, the big pace on the forehand, the touch at
:56:33. > :56:42.the end. That is a gorgeous shot. Well, still in there fighting, in
:56:43. > :57:22.this tie-break. Well, he has certainly come alive
:57:23. > :57:27.now. It is it too late? Maybe not. Still one break point down. But he
:57:28. > :57:33.has played three superb points. This is a good return of serve. As if he
:57:34. > :57:38.was just released from detention and hitting freely. -- released from the
:57:39. > :57:58.tension. A couple of set points for Tomas
:57:59. > :58:21.Berdych. Take set! Emphatically, Berdych
:58:22. > :58:35.claims the first set. It wasn't pretty. But it doesn't
:58:36. > :58:40.matter at all to Tomas Berdych. He takes the first step on the road to
:58:41. > :58:45.the semifinals. I wonder if he will settle down a bit and play like we
:58:46. > :58:48.know he can? As you said, Lucas Pouille, I think the best thing for
:58:49. > :58:53.him would be to win the first set, otherwise it could get away from him
:58:54. > :58:58.a little bit. Was a strange tie-break. It started so badly for
:58:59. > :59:03.Pouille, and in the middle of it he played three amazing points.
:59:04. > :59:07.Berdych, to settle himself, two good serves to set points at 5-4. Took
:59:08. > :59:12.the tie-break and maybe he will start to be a bit freer as well. It
:59:13. > :59:17.was a Conservative sort of set. But a lot of times you don't always play
:59:18. > :59:19.great, sometimes if you can just sit through, he got the job done, wasn't
:59:20. > :59:38.his best. I didn't think people wore them any
:59:39. > :59:43.more. You still got some? Unfortunately they don't fit any
:59:44. > :59:50.more. This is his 52nd straight Grand Slam appearance, testament to
:59:51. > :59:57.his fitness and avoiding injury. The second serve points, they were both
:59:58. > :00:01.in trouble when they were serving. Unforced errors, a fair amount, not
:00:02. > :00:07.too bad. The winners, just shading it for Berdych. Truth to be told, it
:00:08. > :00:12.wasn't a particularly good set. But job was done from Tomas Berdych and
:00:13. > :00:15.we think he will now start to relax a little bit, just play some of his
:00:16. > :00:31.best tennis. We didn't see it in that set.
:00:32. > :00:38.He has the benefit of serving first in this set, Berdych, but a nice
:00:39. > :02:09.start by Pouille. Oh! That will do nicely. There are
:02:10. > :02:15.two ways you can handle this serve. You can wait further back or you can
:02:16. > :02:16.take it on the rise and cut it off, and that is what Pouille did there.
:02:17. > :02:40.Very confident. So, Berdych begins this second set
:02:41. > :02:56.with a hold. Just been struggling to find his way
:02:57. > :03:01.this season, except for those two quarterfinal performances in the
:03:02. > :03:06.majors. This would be such a boost for Berdych if he could make it
:03:07. > :03:15.through to the semifinals and possibly repeat the run of 2010.
:03:16. > :03:23.Things have been blown open in the Men's Singles. Wawrinka losing to
:03:24. > :03:30.Del Potro, Djokovic Alps. The winner of this will play the winner of Andy
:03:31. > :03:36.Murray against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. I think you're right. I think in the
:03:37. > :03:38.last couple of years, any time Djokovic is out of a Grand Slam,
:03:39. > :03:52.everybody fancies their chance. You think a couple of years ago at
:03:53. > :03:58.the US Open, Kei Nishikori Cilic final.
:03:59. > :04:33.Far too many of those. Seven double faults so far in the match.
:04:34. > :04:37.He is also giving Berdych a huge number of second serves to have a
:04:38. > :05:09.look at. We talked about Berdych having a bit
:05:10. > :05:14.of fatigue because of the mental side of that match held over two
:05:15. > :05:20.days, but with Pouille, he hasn't been in this position. Grand slam
:05:21. > :05:22.quarterfinals. His serve is already over the place and fatigue could be
:05:23. > :05:52.setting here too. Rather ragged in that service game
:05:53. > :06:01.and Berdych has the break. He did so well to beat tonic from two sets to
:06:02. > :06:05.one. -- to beat Bernard Tomic. Ran slam tennis is totally different to
:06:06. > :06:11.the rest of the year when you play best-of-3 sets and you don't always
:06:12. > :06:20.get a full day off. Physically and mentally it is a different
:06:21. > :06:23.challenge. He has a lot of training in Dubai in the off-season. That is
:06:24. > :06:26.where he lives now, Lucas Pouille. He says he is getting stronger all
:06:27. > :06:58.the time. APPLAUSE
:06:59. > :07:06.What a point that was. He was the Road Runner in that rally. Just got
:07:07. > :07:12.added to the French Davis Cup team, Pouille, as well. That is a huge
:07:13. > :07:30.honour for him. Yes, qualifying for the French Davis
:07:31. > :07:35.Cup team is tricky! You have to be quite useful! He will move up to
:07:36. > :07:45.21st in the world if he loses here, from his current position of 30.
:07:46. > :08:04.And 21st in the world, in French terms is still number four, behind
:08:05. > :08:19.macro-song two, Gasquet and Monfils. -- behind Tsonga, Gasquet and
:08:20. > :08:23.Monfils. He does look a bit weary, and Berdych is one of the fittest
:08:24. > :08:28.and strongest out there. Although he has had his tussles as well. He had
:08:29. > :08:33.to complete his last match yesterday, Berdych, against Jiri
:08:34. > :08:37.Vesely commit his fellow countrymen. Another of the rising young talents
:08:38. > :08:40.in the game. He was a bit annoyed about it because the previous night
:08:41. > :08:47.he didn't want to play the fifth set, he thought the light was fading
:08:48. > :08:53.and they eventually had to go into a fifth. He has been tested as well,
:08:54. > :08:57.on the stamina front. Lucas Pouille does some damage to the courts on
:08:58. > :09:04.the service line, he drags that rear foot forward when serving.
:09:05. > :09:12.Groundsmen wince! They do, they don't like it when the players do
:09:13. > :09:15.that. He's looking very strong at the moment, Berdych. But without
:09:16. > :09:18.actually setting the heather on fire. He hasn't really had to do
:09:19. > :09:26.anything too outstanding. Let's see if Pouille can find his
:09:27. > :11:15.way back into the set. 0- three. Oh! Beautifully put away. Hi,
:11:16. > :11:24.overhead backhand and a flick of the wrist. That is certainly where his
:11:25. > :11:28.height comes in useful. Good stretch.
:11:29. > :11:42.Well done. A good serve to close it out and get a game in this second
:11:43. > :11:51.set. Interesting to watch his stamina, his fitness, Pouille. Still
:11:52. > :11:52.a reasonably young man, eating stronger with the off-season
:11:53. > :12:37.training. It's not a huge serve, Thomas
:12:38. > :12:41.Berdych come in terms of the actual power, but he picks his spots so
:12:42. > :13:22.well and in terms of the height he gets when it bounces off the court.
:13:23. > :13:34.UMPIRE: Mr Berdych is challenging the call. Right service line, the
:13:35. > :13:38.ball was called out. Very hopeful challenge from Berdych.
:13:39. > :13:57.Sometimes challenging can disrupt your rhythm between first and second
:13:58. > :14:02.serve. He doesn't want to let the Frenchman back in, here. A bit of a
:14:03. > :14:10.sloppy game he's played at the moment.
:14:11. > :14:23.Again, from a commanding position in this game he lets Pouille back,
:14:24. > :14:40.break point. Oh! Well, not far away. He read that
:14:41. > :15:22.so well. He has found a couple of good serves
:15:23. > :15:23.under pressure. Just lining up a view more of his first serves than
:15:24. > :15:54.Pouille. -- a few more. So, Berdych sees off the danger in
:15:55. > :16:00.that game and remains with the advantage in this second set.
:16:01. > :16:09.STUDIO Very much in control, Tomas Berdych,
:16:10. > :16:14.on Court Number One. After all the excitement of Federer are going
:16:15. > :16:19.through in his opening match against Cilic, Andy Murray has started very
:16:20. > :16:25.well. He has a break of serve and has just saved a break point. He is
:16:26. > :16:34.serving, you can see that match on BBC One. Andy's brother Jamie is out
:16:35. > :16:41.on Court Eighteen, battling hard in this doubles match. 4-4, 30-30.
:16:42. > :16:46.Nothing between those teams. A lot happening today. We will keep you up
:16:47. > :16:50.to date with those matches, but back we go to Court Number One.
:16:51. > :16:59.COMMENTATOR: He just gave Lucas Pouille a look, a chance to get back
:17:00. > :17:05.on level terms. But he's doing enough at the moment, Tomas Berdych.
:17:06. > :17:10.He is doing just enough. He's not playing great, by any means. Lost
:17:11. > :17:15.his concentration and became a bit sloppy, but his first serve rescued
:17:16. > :17:19.him. He may be mentally just a little bit tired after all the
:17:20. > :17:26.trouble is that he's had in the last round and the two days and trying to
:17:27. > :17:29.get the match over with. He knows if he can win this second set, he will
:17:30. > :17:50.be in great shape. APPLAUSE
:17:51. > :17:57.Nicely done, there. Got the volley off beautifully. The problems stem
:17:58. > :18:05.from that second serve from Pouille just sitting up and allowing Berdych
:18:06. > :18:07.to take the aggressive tone. He needs to keep the first serve
:18:08. > :18:22.percentage up. We have to remind ourselves that
:18:23. > :18:25.this is a big stage for Lucas Pouille, not just that it is a
:18:26. > :18:29.quarterfinal but it is on Court Number One at Wimbledon. He has had
:18:30. > :18:34.success on the outside courts so far.
:18:35. > :18:45.You can see the pace that he does possess when he accelerates on that
:18:46. > :19:08.forehand. It really is a rocket. I mention his Davis Cup debut coming
:19:09. > :19:10.up for France and that is against the Czech Republic, where he may
:19:11. > :19:22.well face Berdych again. Much better from Pouille. Still just
:19:23. > :19:42.one break adrift. The other members of the French
:19:43. > :19:46.Davis Cup team are Tsonga, who is in action at the moment, Nicolas Mahut
:19:47. > :21:39.and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. APPLAUSE
:21:40. > :21:46.Excellent footwork there from Berdych. He is a tall man, but he
:21:47. > :21:52.moves well on his feet there to get around that forehand. He adjusts and
:21:53. > :22:38.gets the racket back early as he's moving.
:22:39. > :22:48.Well spotted, and tucked it in behind Lucas Pouille and Berdych
:22:49. > :22:58.holds. Again, not a huge amount for the
:22:59. > :23:03.crowd to get its teeth into yet, as Berdych is now moving along very
:23:04. > :23:09.well in the second set, heading towards a two sets to love lead.
:23:10. > :23:16.There will be a roof on Court Number One ready for play in 2019, likely
:23:17. > :23:21.in place before 2018 -- before that, towards the end of 2018, but the
:23:22. > :23:28.first time it will be in play is 2019. This is where all the drama is
:23:29. > :23:32.happening today, Court Number One. That is how you're getting the
:23:33. > :23:46.pictures. Very small camera man up there. It's a cameraman free zone.
:23:47. > :23:53.You used to send brave cameramen up but they are all rather timid now!
:23:54. > :23:58.No, it's able mode operated camera. Gives us the glorious shots across
:23:59. > :24:02.the All-England Club. All England Lawn Tennis Ground croquet club.
:24:03. > :24:50.Pouille, to stay in the second set. He got away with that, but again,
:24:51. > :24:54.it's that second serve. Not picking the spots in the middle of the
:24:55. > :25:13.service box. Berdych should have done better with that.
:25:14. > :25:51.Nicely done by Pouille, a good service game. Making sure that
:25:52. > :25:58.Berdych has to serve for it. Trying to get himself going, Lucas Pouille.
:25:59. > :26:08.So that he can assault the Berdych serve now. It is the Czech player
:26:09. > :26:16.Irving for the set now. -- serving for the set.
:26:17. > :27:07.That was a little bit ambitious. Trying to go down the line after
:27:08. > :27:19.that pace coming at him, going over the fastest part of the net.
:27:20. > :27:29.UMPIRE: Mr Pouille is challenging the call. Well, a challenge coming
:27:30. > :27:34.in from Pouille but it looked clean. Some chalk flew up. Or whatever it's
:27:35. > :27:42.called these days. Titanium pigments. There you go.
:27:43. > :28:08.Mr Pouille has two challenges remaining.
:28:09. > :28:17.Well, nothing going right for Pouille now, off a gentle second
:28:18. > :28:41.serve. It brings Thomas Berdych to two set points.
:28:42. > :28:47.Out! UMPIRE: Game and second set,
:28:48. > :28:50.Berdych. Berdych sales on, to set good.
:28:51. > :29:00.-- he sails on, two sets to the good. Is there any way back in for
:29:01. > :29:05.Lucas Pouille here, John? What is he going to do? What is going to have
:29:06. > :29:08.to happen? At the moment it's comfortable for this man. He's just
:29:09. > :29:14.taking control. He got the early break in the second, when Pouille
:29:15. > :29:19.went off the boil and it looked like he reacted to losing the first set.
:29:20. > :29:22.He has looked a bit tired. He's got to be more consistent, his first
:29:23. > :29:27.serve percentage has got to get bumped up a bit and he's got to try
:29:28. > :29:31.and pick a few more spots on his second serve, go for it a bit more,
:29:32. > :29:38.because he's getting hurt in that position. He is all only holding 33%
:29:39. > :29:43.when he misses his first serve and Berdych is very comfortable on those
:29:44. > :29:48.stats. Pouille remains pretty much as he was in the first set when it
:29:49. > :29:55.went to a tie-break. They were both low down in the 50s. He has doubled
:29:56. > :30:00.the winners now, Berdych, and cut down the unforced errors. There is
:30:01. > :30:04.still not really much in it but it looks to me like Pouille has to do a
:30:05. > :30:08.bit more on his serve and just cut down... It's a bit up and down with
:30:09. > :30:13.him. He looks like he's snapping the forehand and you think he's got it
:30:14. > :30:17.now and then he plays a sloppy shot. Berdych got more solid in that
:30:18. > :30:21.second set, clamped down and didn't do anything to spectacular, just got
:30:22. > :30:26.ahead of his man early on and held on with his serve. Now at 2-0,
:30:27. > :30:33.Berdych has to keep motivated and get off to an early start here.
:30:34. > :30:38.Pouille may be tired but he has to say listen, if I continue like this,
:30:39. > :30:42.I'm going out anyway. I may as well go out fighting and firing. Because
:30:43. > :30:51.he's got that than this. He played superbly against Bernard Tomic.
:30:52. > :31:00.He is trying. It's a quarter-final of a Grand Slam, you have to just
:31:01. > :31:50.put it all on the line. No doubt he is feeling it.
:31:51. > :32:17.Pouille was motoring along here, but perhaps not. Just got careful on
:32:18. > :32:21.that backhand volley and just guided it.
:32:22. > :32:32.There it is. And the ideal start for Pouille.
:32:33. > :32:39.That's his brother on the left side there.
:32:40. > :32:46.Jonathan and his partner in the middle there.
:32:47. > :32:51.In the middle there, Jonathan. It has been a tremendous run by the
:32:52. > :32:58.Frenchman to get here and it's not over yet. He is still in this match.
:32:59. > :33:05.He has to dig deep. He lost in the first round in Stuttgart coming in
:33:06. > :33:26.here, so this is a great adventure, not yet over.
:33:27. > :34:25.Berdych also lost in the first round also in Germany.
:34:26. > :34:38.An improvised role there. He couldn't take a big back swing on
:34:39. > :34:41.this. He shortened it up, got the angle right, that was the important
:34:42. > :35:25.thing. Clips around the outside of the ball. Excellent recovery.
:35:26. > :36:32.Looks like either Ukrainian or Swedish.
:36:33. > :36:44.Again a glimpse of an opening here for Berdych.
:36:45. > :36:58.A few encouraging cries for Pouille. He needs some help.
:36:59. > :38:50.Oh! Better positions now, he is landing
:38:51. > :38:58.a few more first serves but he is certainly looking a little bit
:38:59. > :39:22.tired. Another break point, Berdych. UMPIRE: Net. First service.
:39:23. > :39:30.Bird has it and the road back now for Lucas Pouille gets longer still.
:39:31. > :39:42.-- Berdych. A man with one giant foot already in
:39:43. > :39:44.the semifinals, you fancy, it's difficult to see Pouille coming back
:39:45. > :39:53.into this. It's all happened without a minimum
:39:54. > :39:58.of fuss from Berdych. He's not really been pushed out of his
:39:59. > :40:01.comfort zone. No, he can certainly play better than this but he is just
:40:02. > :40:04.doing enough. Another example here of Pouille, you think he is in
:40:05. > :40:09.charge but he doesn't get close enough to the net. He should have
:40:10. > :40:14.been another two feet in. That volley from that position is a very
:40:15. > :40:18.difficult volley to hit. There were two in that game where he could have
:40:19. > :40:21.closed closer in and had to hit volleys from the service line. You
:40:22. > :40:31.can't really get away with that. UMPIRE: Time.
:40:32. > :40:35.Berdych is closing in on a place in the semifinal. The winner of this
:40:36. > :40:52.will play the winner of the match on Centre Court at the moment. Andy
:40:53. > :40:57.Murray and Jo Tsonga. And new balls. Tomas Berdych with the break.
:40:58. > :41:40.UMPIRE: Net. First service. He needs something, Pouille. He
:41:41. > :41:57.needs a couple of gifts from Berdych to help him on his way.
:41:58. > :42:05.It's just been such a feature, that first serve in the corner. Doesn't
:42:06. > :42:09.serve that many aces for someone that size but it's so accurate. Then
:42:10. > :42:14.he gets that second strike and that's where he can do the damage on
:42:15. > :43:24.that forehand side. That's nicely done. Unfortunate with
:43:25. > :43:28.the slip there, Pouille. It's an opposite effect on the court now.
:43:29. > :43:32.The first week it was because the court was damp and now it's too dry!
:43:33. > :43:38.That touch is lovely. He had that drop that short. Pouille was so
:43:39. > :43:41.quick ready for the next one. Look at the back spin there. Fields that
:43:42. > :44:10.ball over with the back spin. Oh!
:44:11. > :44:14.Stepped into that one. That was one of the best returns
:44:15. > :44:18.he's hit. It was a good body swerve and he managed to get his body out
:44:19. > :44:28.of the way and direct that back down the line. A lot of pace.
:44:29. > :44:56.A little puff of white and Berdych moves along.
:44:57. > :45:05.Oh! That's a pity. Fantastic backhand there and that's his point
:45:06. > :45:11.really. Just so far out. That to me is like a mental error. That's just
:45:12. > :45:18.all the physical side coming in. And not being in a position in the
:45:19. > :45:26.quarters of a Grand Slam, it's caught up with him, it looks.
:45:27. > :45:37.He is trying. He is fighting. He is not giving this away but it's not
:45:38. > :45:50.there. The legs, not getting in the right position enough.
:45:51. > :45:59.Oh, dear! A point that he should have won and he looked rather lost
:46:00. > :46:03.as the ball sailed above his head. Didn't know where it was.
:46:04. > :46:19.Not much a coach can do in this position. Three break points.
:46:20. > :46:35.Oh! Well, that is emphatically done by Tomas Berdych, the double break
:46:36. > :46:40.and motoring towards victory now. You were right what you said there.
:46:41. > :46:44.Not much a coach can do. There is nothing he can do. This is
:46:45. > :46:48.unchartered territory for him. He has had an amazing tournament.
:46:49. > :46:51.Wasn't supposed to be here. He's come through. You learn from an
:46:52. > :46:55.experience like this. If he goes on to lose this match it's not over
:46:56. > :46:58.yet, but he is in big trouble obviously, this will be the sort of
:46:59. > :47:02.thing the coach will say you have to get used to this type of thing. You
:47:03. > :47:07.have to get physically stronger. You have to get used to playing these
:47:08. > :47:11.type of matches and knowing when you get to a Grand Slam this is the
:47:12. > :47:14.thing you are going to expect. It takes sometime sometimes. And this
:47:15. > :47:19.is only his second Wimbledon. He lost in the first round last year to
:47:20. > :47:24.Kevin Anderson, so a massive improvement, not just in Wimbledon
:47:25. > :47:29.but any Grand Slam. Second round of the French this year and in 2013.
:47:30. > :47:32.So, to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, it's not over yet, but
:47:33. > :47:37.it's looking that way, it's a huge step and he is going to move up to
:47:38. > :47:39.21st in the world. He is taking big steps. But this is just a step too
:47:40. > :48:33.far. Sometimes he has to work so hard to
:48:34. > :48:39.get down as a big man to these low balls and squash - look it's like
:48:40. > :49:01.oak trees carrying him around the court. So strong.
:49:02. > :49:06.The other interesting thing about Berdych in the era of super coaches
:49:07. > :49:12.and everyone talking about what they can do, he's not got a coach. He has
:49:13. > :49:19.a physio, a trainer but he hasn't got a coach after splitting with one
:49:20. > :49:28.and doing it himself, doing it pretty well. There is no secret of
:49:29. > :49:38.the fact he wanted Ivan Lendl, but that relationship didn't happen.
:49:39. > :49:45.I think if you were choosing as Lendl, choosing to work with Murray
:49:46. > :49:49.or Berdych, you would know who had the better raw materials to perhaps
:49:50. > :49:50.give you a little bit more success. Although Berdych is hugely talented,
:49:51. > :50:42.as well. Oh! Gorgeous point. Brilliant.
:50:43. > :50:47.Didn't think he was going to get that ball.
:50:48. > :50:50.In a match which has sometimes failed to live up to the hype and
:50:51. > :50:58.excitement, this was an outstanding point.
:50:59. > :51:04.Some high quality from both men there.
:51:05. > :51:24.Now Berdych closes in and Pouille serving to stay in the match.
:51:25. > :52:24.Eight double faults, that's far too high.
:52:25. > :52:35.That's what's got him in trouble. Second serve again, Berdych getting
:52:36. > :53:18.right on top of that serve and putting the Frenchman in trouble.
:53:19. > :53:48.UMPIRE: Advantage Pouille. Still knocking them down at 130mph.
:53:49. > :54:07.But also some very, again fatigue looking shots from Pouille.
:54:08. > :54:17.UMPIRE: Advantage Berdych. So Berdych on the Pouille serve has his
:54:18. > :54:18.first match point. Finally some noise from court number one.
:54:19. > :54:49.APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
:54:50. > :55:46.A great second serve. That's a fantastic second serve from Pouille.
:55:47. > :55:50.STUDIO: Missed opportunities from Berdych there. Sadly, we have to
:55:51. > :55:54.leave this match on BBC Two because we are heading over to Centre as our
:55:55. > :55:59.time is running out on BBC One. If you want to continue matching this
:56:00. > :56:03.match it is on the red button and, of course, we will update you with
:56:04. > :56:07.it over here on BBC Two. We will update you here on BBC Two.
:56:08. > :56:12.But everybody watching the big screen and everybody watching the
:56:13. > :56:17.watch on Centre Court because it's so tight. It's in the tie-break.
:56:18. > :56:23.Tsonga has had a couple of set points. It's 6-6 on Centre Court.
:56:24. > :57:14.Let's join our commentators out there.
:57:15. > :58:56.APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
:58:57. > :59:09.He's done it again. Are you kidding? We all said that's the weaker wing
:59:10. > :59:16.of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. One great cross-court to set up a point. He
:59:17. > :59:25.fought that one off. It was a good return by Andy Murray. Look at his
:59:26. > :59:44.second serve on set point. Might be better when he is just reacting.
:59:45. > :00:37.CHUCKLES Two matches after this one!
:00:38. > :00:48.Oh! That was a very fine volley. He could have used a first serve but
:00:49. > :00:56.didn't get it. That is a great volley from Tsonga, a volley with
:00:57. > :01:04.intent. The return was really close to going over the baseline. That is
:01:05. > :01:06.clearly where Murray was hoping that ball would float, a little long.
:01:07. > :01:17.Surprised it dropped in. The course of potentially five sets
:01:18. > :01:22.in the final match. There seems to be a lock on this first set. -- a
:01:23. > :02:01.lot on it. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:02:02. > :02:09.These guys are going at it! I will tell you that. That is great tennis.
:02:10. > :02:17.What a point. The noise off the racket from both. Just the
:02:18. > :02:20.physicality... This man is made of granite.
:02:21. > :03:24.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Oh! That's why Murray does the
:03:25. > :03:30.hours! Was that a 30 yard run? He had to be balanced when he got
:03:31. > :04:16.there, he had to pick his timing. Jo wasn't equal to it.
:04:17. > :04:30.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE One set to Murray. One step closer
:04:31. > :04:37.to another semifinal at Wimbledon. That was a fine hour and 17 minutes.
:04:38. > :04:42.Both players playing brilliant tennis together.
:04:43. > :04:49.Wow, what a set of tennis that was. Great athlete, unbelievable
:04:50. > :04:54.competitor, Andy Murray. What tension, what drama, what a day we
:04:55. > :04:59.are having on Centre Court. This was the moment that Andy Murray took the
:05:00. > :05:07.first set here. Great approach from him there and then right into the
:05:08. > :05:11.open court, making no mistake. So, that is Andy Murray taking the first
:05:12. > :05:20.set here on Centre Court. I say we've had the most incredible day
:05:21. > :05:24.here today because earlier Roger Federer was in action and came back
:05:25. > :05:29.from two sets to love down against Marin Cilic. This has just happened
:05:30. > :05:37.on Court One, where Tomas Berdych has come through against Lucas
:05:38. > :05:45.Pouille, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2. Lucas Pouille has had a wonderful
:05:46. > :05:53.tournament, getting through to his first quarterfinal. I mention Roger
:05:54. > :05:59.Federer, and what an absolute thriller this was. Two sets down
:06:00. > :06:03.against Marin Cilic but just coming through and getting better and
:06:04. > :06:07.better as the match went on. What a great champion and what a great
:06:08. > :06:12.fighter as well. The Centre Court crowd rise to a great champion, who
:06:13. > :06:20.showed how to come back in a match when he looked down and out. Never,
:06:21. > :06:25.ever count this man out. Wonderful scenes on Centre Court. If they have
:06:26. > :06:35.had a ticket there today, they have had an absolute treat. And he will
:06:36. > :06:38.play Melos Raonic in the semifinal. He came through in the battle of the
:06:39. > :06:45.big servers on Court One, Sam Querrey.
:06:46. > :06:52.Once again he will meet Roger Federer here in a semifinal at
:06:53. > :07:03.Wimbledon. He showed those qualities in the Queen's Club final, carrying
:07:04. > :07:04.them through here to the semifinal once again.
:07:05. > :07:13.This is the scene here, they are what watching Andy Murray and they
:07:14. > :07:18.were cheering loudly during that tie-break. What tension during that
:07:19. > :07:21.tie-break. Certainly the British fans enjoying the fact that Andy
:07:22. > :07:25.Murray has taken the opening set in this match. We knew it would be a
:07:26. > :07:30.tough one, against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He certainly had his
:07:31. > :07:35.chances, but he is as tough as granite, Andy Murray, and he has
:07:36. > :07:42.taken the first set. We are all ready to carry on, straight into the
:07:43. > :07:49.evening. Andy Murray a set up but a long way to go.
:07:50. > :07:56.COMMENTATOR: Andy Murray, returns in play at break point. On all points,
:07:57. > :08:04.OK, Andy Murray gets his racket on the ball a lot, we know that. But on
:08:05. > :08:07.break point, 100% of the time. Good percentage from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
:08:08. > :08:14.as well, indicating the standard he achieved in that first set. I played
:08:15. > :08:18.against some great return is in my day, Jimmy Connors, Andrei Agassi.
:08:19. > :08:27.This guide takes it to a whole new level. These guys, Djokovic and
:08:28. > :08:33.Murray specifically, six foot two and a half, six foot three. Their
:08:34. > :08:40.wingspan, there quick is, it's so tough to get the ball by these guys.
:08:41. > :09:05.They have taken returning to a whole new level. It's amazing.
:09:06. > :09:15.Lleyton Hewitt, what has Jo got left? There will be a little lull?
:09:16. > :09:20.He will be frustrated not to have closed it out. Plus he came back and
:09:21. > :09:26.fought hard from down an early break in that first set as well. He was
:09:27. > :09:31.being aggressive and I thought he really took it to Andy in that
:09:32. > :09:32.tie-break. Looking for his opportunities to move forward. He's
:09:33. > :10:01.going to have to play on the edge. You just wonder if he can have the
:10:02. > :10:05.confidence to keep coming in. At 6-5 serving in that tie-break he went
:10:06. > :10:08.for the big serve-volley and Andy Murray hit a fantastic return of
:10:09. > :10:23.serve and then an even better passing shot.
:10:24. > :10:39.Lleyton, you were around my height. Did you ever think when you saw how
:10:40. > :10:44.good these guys were at returning there should be like weight
:10:45. > :10:50.divisions in tennis! CHUCKLES
:10:51. > :11:03.I wish I had half their service. I would give you two or three inches
:11:04. > :11:05.of height for some of your titles! How well these guys move, especially
:11:06. > :11:23.round the back of the court. So, this is the most important
:11:24. > :11:28.passage of play in this whole match now for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He's
:11:29. > :11:33.disappointed after losing the first set, throwing everything in for an
:11:34. > :11:37.hour and 15, an hour and 20 and he got nothing for it. He must
:11:38. > :11:43.establish himself in this second set. I think the most important
:11:44. > :11:46.passage was 6-5 in the tie-break. Well, that too... When he
:11:47. > :11:59.serve-volleyed. Six straight points for Murray. He
:12:00. > :12:02.knows where we are in the match. This is where the question marks
:12:03. > :12:07.have been over Tsonga and whether he can get over the line in a Grand
:12:08. > :12:10.Slam, over two weeks, best of five set matches. He plays some
:12:11. > :12:14.extraordinary tennis but then he will have some roles and you just
:12:15. > :12:28.can't do it against the best players. -- some lulls.
:12:29. > :13:06.He just popped his return in the middle of the court at 0-30.
:13:07. > :13:21.UMPIRE: 15-40. Mr Tsonga challenging the call, left service line. The
:13:22. > :13:25.ball was called out. His coaches and his girlfriend up there, Jo-Wilfried
:13:26. > :13:29.Tsonga. A little disappointed now in this opening service game.
:13:30. > :13:50.Remember, he went 18-17 -- 19-17 in the fifth against John Isner is a
:13:51. > :13:55.few days ago. He meant to play Richard Gasquet but that was only 24
:13:56. > :13:57.minutes long, 4-2 and out, ask a hurting his back. But Tsonga looks
:13:58. > :14:39.tired. APPLAUSE
:14:40. > :14:46.Deflated might be the better word right now. He worked so hard to get
:14:47. > :14:54.back into the set and in a winning position. He is letting it affect
:14:55. > :15:31.his play right now. Murray sensing that and jumping on it.
:15:32. > :15:50.New balls, please. Murray leads three games to love, second set, and
:15:51. > :15:54.by one set to love. For an hour and a quarter or so, we had an absolute
:15:55. > :16:00.further, and now things have settled down a bit. Andy Murray well in
:16:01. > :16:04.control of this quarterfinal match. There is Court Number One on the
:16:05. > :16:07.right-hand side. In 2019, that will have a roof on and a couple more
:16:08. > :16:28.layers of seats commit 2900 seats. You can see London into the
:16:29. > :16:37.distance. This is Henman Hill. The picnic terrace. Andy Murray quite
:16:38. > :16:45.happy to acknowledge... He will take the Wimbledon trophy instead! That
:16:46. > :16:47.was very slippery, some of those banks, very slippery in the first
:16:48. > :17:10.week. Those darkened windows, the
:17:11. > :17:16.broadcast centre. Newish Court Three. 15,000 people in here now
:17:17. > :17:27.enjoying a ninth consecutive quarterfinal for Andy Murray.
:17:28. > :17:39.You guys both won here. I'm so jealous! What a great feeling.
:17:40. > :17:47.Do you remember your match point, Lleyton? Absolutely. I was fortunate
:17:48. > :17:52.enough to be up two sets to love and a double break. I was trying to
:17:53. > :17:59.block it out when I got up to serve. I got up 40-0, hit a double fault,
:18:00. > :18:02.and then decided to just rally and wait for Nalbandian to make an
:18:03. > :18:18.error. Oh dear! He might think about that
:18:19. > :18:28.one for a lifetime! Make him play another shot. Jo, a tad too lazy...
:18:29. > :19:12.CHUCKLES That's a nice way of putting it.
:19:13. > :19:18.His back hand-held are truly well in that tie-break with a couple of big
:19:19. > :19:35.winners in ages, but already in this set he has made some bad errors. Do
:19:36. > :19:40.you think that is directly related to his head from the first set?
:19:41. > :19:43.Absolutely. He probably knows as well as we do that his record
:19:44. > :19:48.against Andy isn't great. He hasn't one that many sets especially in
:19:49. > :19:54.recent times. To come back now and win in four or five is a big ask. It
:19:55. > :20:02.is certainly looking like it would have to be in five, now.
:20:03. > :20:15.Murray just piles on the pressure, meantime. Relentless. Two rakes.
:20:16. > :20:24.-- two breaks. We saw him play so nonchalantly at 30-0 up and just see
:20:25. > :20:39.what could happen. I remember your first match that you
:20:40. > :20:43.won here, John. I just wanted to say when you asked that... Which one?
:20:44. > :20:52.LAUGHTER We will give you a whole change of
:20:53. > :21:03.ends to talk about it. I just wanted to say that, that's all!
:21:04. > :21:26.Is a picture of Judy Murray just a moment ago. I know parents looking
:21:27. > :21:29.down on their kids playing on Centre Court, nobody had a harder time than
:21:30. > :21:34.your poor mum and dad, John! CHUCKLES
:21:35. > :22:02.5-0 is looming. This is Kyrgios like! Oh! You want to talk about
:22:03. > :22:05.that again? That is what Andy Murray does two players, John. First set,
:22:06. > :22:26.weathers the storm. I know that you have three children,
:22:27. > :22:32.is that correct? If Nick Kyrgios called you tomorrow and said I want
:22:33. > :22:38.you to be my full-time coach, would you be willing to do that? No, I'm
:22:39. > :22:47.Davis Cup coach, or Captain, so... You can't do both? No, my job is to
:22:48. > :22:55.look after the Australian players. I'm here to focus on the Davis Cup
:22:56. > :23:00.and he knows that. He is finding his way at the moment like a log of
:23:01. > :23:06.young kids. He's not going to be at the Olympic Games because he fell
:23:07. > :23:12.out with the Australian chef the mission. There are a lot of things
:23:13. > :23:15.happening behind-the-scenes that the public donors as early know about
:23:16. > :23:19.and it's not for me to go into that, but he was frustrated. He wanted to
:23:20. > :23:23.play the Olympics, but he felt there were certain things and people
:23:24. > :23:26.against him with that. Nick wants to play for Australia and wants to
:23:27. > :23:30.represent his country. I think he would be very good in that
:23:31. > :23:39.environment if he did turn up and play. I looking forward to the
:23:40. > :23:44.opportunity of sitting on the sidelines with him in a Davis Cup
:23:45. > :23:51.game. What happened in America, you guys didn't play? He was sick. He
:23:52. > :23:55.had a virus. He tried to play in Melbourne and medical staff ruled
:23:56. > :24:00.him out an hour before the draw. Final Kyrgios question! Thanks,
:24:01. > :24:06.John. Thank you. Would you recommend to him that he get a full-time
:24:07. > :24:10.coach? Absolutely, but he has do find the right one and he has to put
:24:11. > :24:16.full trust in that person. That is the big thing. Final one, does he
:24:17. > :24:20.have a PO box that John can send his CV to?
:24:21. > :24:25.CHUCKLES I don't know if John would get a
:24:26. > :24:27.response. Congratulations on Milos Raonic, by the way. Yeah, Simi
:24:28. > :24:48.finalist. Important for Tsonga to get on the
:24:49. > :24:52.board, just so that at least he can serve for the first time in the
:24:53. > :24:54.third set and get a lead, get something going again. A long way
:24:55. > :25:18.back right now. Well, he didn't play from the French
:25:19. > :25:28.when he had to pull out in the third round, up 5-2, until Wimbledon. That
:25:29. > :25:32.was that 19-17 -- perhaps that 19-17 match that you mentioned, Andrew,
:25:33. > :25:41.had more of an effect than losing the first set. Pulled out of the
:25:42. > :26:03.French Open with an adductor injury. Inside of the leg.
:26:04. > :26:09.The backhand is getting him into trouble at the moment and you sense
:26:10. > :26:14.that Andy Murray can see that. He's going after that side. The first
:26:15. > :26:17.set, he was trying to open up the backhand more by going to the
:26:18. > :26:21.forehand. Now he's just straight attacking the backhand wing.
:26:22. > :27:33.APPLAUSE Murray just working Tsonga side to
:27:34. > :27:45.side. The physical specimens are the
:27:46. > :27:53.standard in the world of men's tennis.
:27:54. > :27:58.Boy how the complexion and the field around the place changed when
:27:59. > :28:08.Djokovic lost to Sam Querrey on Court One.
:28:09. > :28:16.I don't think Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is going to expend too much energy
:28:17. > :28:21.here, in the latter stages of the second set. Roger Federer making it
:28:22. > :28:27.through to the semifinal stage here despite any a handful of tournaments
:28:28. > :28:34.this year. No Rafael Nadal, wrist injuries kept him out. The news
:28:35. > :28:38.coming out of Mallorca is that he's going to start playing in a couple
:28:39. > :28:40.of weeks' time. How much truth there is do that, we will see. Just a
:28:41. > :29:04.holding press release, really. Only two double faults in the
:29:05. > :29:29.tournament for Andy Murray. UMPIRE: Mr Tsonga challenging the
:29:30. > :29:38.call. Tsonga challenging here. This brings up set point.
:29:39. > :29:47.UMPIRE: Game and second set, Murray. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:29:48. > :29:52.The first set was an absolute classic at 12-10 in the tie-breaker.
:29:53. > :30:02.The second one, about a third of the time, just 26 minutes. Murray wins
:30:03. > :30:06.6-1. That's a pretty revealing is that, that release apprised me, that
:30:07. > :30:13.he has only doubled twice the entire tournament. -- really surprised me.
:30:14. > :30:24.The influence of Ivan Lewis will -- Ivan Lendl, do I have two?
:30:25. > :30:46.Set and a break to your man. You lost! You know... I thought it was a
:30:47. > :30:56.great match. It was unfortunate, Milos had that challenge, 30-40,
:30:57. > :31:03.would have made it 4-1. Turned the tide! But you have got to credit
:31:04. > :31:12.Murray. I am just going to tell you, do something, I don't normally do,
:31:13. > :31:18.props to Lendl. He has done a tremendous job, outstanding, as
:31:19. > :31:25.coach, he has always been meticulous, I have not been close
:31:26. > :31:31.around Andy but I think he has given him everything that he has asked
:31:32. > :31:43.for, belief. Unfortunately, I was the recipient of Ivan getting his
:31:44. > :31:49.first major. Similar for Andy, he had respect and credibility, been
:31:50. > :31:59.there, done that. And eventually won eight slams. This is the exact
:32:00. > :32:08.reason why Murray signed him. Didn't hurt to be nice to him? I remember I
:32:09. > :32:15.was in Australia, when I found out Andy had hired Ivan. I thought it
:32:16. > :32:25.cannot be doing that. Then seconds later, I thought this is going to
:32:26. > :32:39.work! And hats off to Goran, round robin doubles. Playing Bjorkman,
:32:40. > :32:46.Johanssen. Sat through his man having match points against Federer.
:32:47. > :32:54.The two days matches I have seen him play, he was unbelievable, right
:32:55. > :33:07.there, a killer. Hard one to get over. Old enough for all that now?
:33:08. > :33:17.Certainly old enough. Match was on his racket. Serving huge. Tired on
:33:18. > :33:24.his forehand. Especially second serve returns. Here we go. Two sets
:33:25. > :34:35.to Murray. The focus is... Exactly laser like.
:34:36. > :34:59.Wasn't sure about that footwork! Inches in the baseline.
:35:00. > :35:14.Working him over. In squash, you play a working ball, ten, 15
:35:15. > :35:22.minutes, down the wall... Every ball working Tsonga. Tearing strength
:35:23. > :36:47.from his muscles. Good for Tsonga. Good game to win.
:36:48. > :36:55.Well done. You felt like the match was over if he lost serve early. At
:36:56. > :37:12.least he can point to something positive. Head back. We saw him beat
:37:13. > :37:17.Federer here. Two sets down, 2011. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 31 now. Still
:37:18. > :38:00.number 12 in the world. Four times Tsonga has come back from
:38:01. > :38:40.two down to win in five. 10th time Roger had come back from
:38:41. > :38:55.two down. Murray, nine times. How many for you Lleyton? Not as many as
:38:56. > :39:11.ten! I can hear your brain working! Becker.
:39:12. > :39:19.This is Tsonga's chance. There's been a lull. The crowd and perhaps
:39:20. > :39:43.Murray. Get something going. That was an important first serve.
:39:44. > :40:15.Tsonga, looting to dictate play, big forehand.
:40:16. > :40:37.John, you? From two down? Couple of times. Not often! Just won easily?
:40:38. > :40:49.Wish that was true! Now you're in the spirit Lleyton!
:40:50. > :40:56.Actually felt the opposite. Felt I didn't fight hard enough!
:40:57. > :41:07.Competitiveness was never a weakness of yours! One of the epic feats in
:41:08. > :41:18.tennis. Badge of honour. What a volley! If his body is hurting,
:41:19. > :42:47.it'll have been strained with that! Good move. He is going to have to
:42:48. > :42:48.keep doing that. You could see Murray on full stretch. Only chip it
:42:49. > :42:59.back. So it's getting to the net, high
:43:00. > :43:21.back. Murray, championship winner 2013,
:43:22. > :43:30.trying to join Bjorn Borg with the number of Wimbledon wins. Five
:43:31. > :43:45.straight. This guy from America came over! High forehand volley down the
:43:46. > :43:56.line! Tight! Could barely breathe! Zero having much of a sweet spot.
:43:57. > :44:05.I'll have only one record. At the end of my life. Lost the others!
:44:06. > :44:19.Last guy to win a major with a wooden racket! Can't take that from
:44:20. > :44:35.you! The other three guys to beat Bjorn? Was I born? His last
:44:36. > :45:46.Wimbledon, 81. I'll let you ponder. No search engines.
:45:47. > :46:31.Nastase? No. This whipper snapper born in 81!
:46:32. > :46:37.Tsonga has a foothold in this set. Murray has got something to
:46:38. > :47:11.contained with. -- contend with. Very fine return of serve. Murray
:47:12. > :47:42.clearly not thinking it was going in. Got some belief here.
:47:43. > :48:06.Just long! Going to be a challenge. Hawk Eye system. Get the challenge
:48:07. > :48:22.right... But Murray will lose one. Great system. Introduced 2007.
:48:23. > :48:30.Tsonga took a bodyblow, losing the first set tie break 12-10. Finally,
:48:31. > :48:35.Tsonga putting some pressure on the Murray serve. Massive return on
:48:36. > :49:17.break point. Murray had a good look at a return,
:49:18. > :49:44.30-30, Tsonga a different guy out there now.
:49:45. > :49:55.Tennis is such a mental sport. One on one. Nowhere to hide. The
:49:56. > :50:13.pressure that Tsonga could have put on the Murray serve, hitting more
:50:14. > :50:25.forehands... Quality. Dropping the racket head. Backspin. Get it wrong.
:50:26. > :50:57.Double bogey. Gorgeous. Hard to do with that spin on it.
:50:58. > :51:01.Ladies and gentleman, do not call out before the player hits the ball.
:51:02. > :51:29.Thanks. Tough to pull that off consistently.
:51:30. > :52:31.That's for sure. Flat volley we see here... Gives
:52:32. > :52:32.Murray ample time. Easier to pull off the top-spin lob when it sits
:52:33. > :52:50.up. This is frustrating Murray, finding
:52:51. > :53:18.it extremely hard to get back, deuce then Tsonga with the big ace.
:53:19. > :53:36.One way traffic, second set. 2-0 Murray. But this is the glory of
:53:37. > :53:45.five set tennis. The people who have beaten Bjorg at Wimbledon. Arthur
:53:46. > :53:53.Ashe. Roger Taylor. Ebb and flow of five set tennis. It is a different
:53:54. > :54:10.test, for the body. Absolutely. And we do not play it for the rest of
:54:11. > :54:17.the year, first set tie break could go either way, Jo calmed down at the
:54:18. > :54:23.end of the second set. Found his rhythm. It is also difficult, to
:54:24. > :54:30.keep concentration, at this level, no matter how good you are. You have
:54:31. > :54:34.said that as the difficult thing, the concentration, not the
:54:35. > :54:43.physicality. I absolutely believe that. It is the combination, but
:54:44. > :54:49.even more credit, to Mr Federer for what he was able to accomplish
:54:50. > :54:58.today, against somebody playing so well as Cilic. Saved three match
:54:59. > :55:11.points. Two service games. Then a tie break. Trouble in the third set.
:55:12. > :56:29.Jo's having trouble with the racket! Exactly.
:56:30. > :57:01.Don't get in too many long rallies...
:57:02. > :57:06.Murray might be trying to keep him in a couple. Wear him out before he
:57:07. > :57:47.serves. Big hitting here. Jo-Wilfried
:57:48. > :57:48.Tsonga, great depth. Getting the opportunity, to come forward with
:57:49. > :58:21.the big forehand. This is an extremely difficult shot.
:58:22. > :59:12.Ball was moving through the court. Beautiful job, from Murray.
:59:13. > :59:39.Oh! Unreal, unreal! Yet another body blow for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. You
:59:40. > :59:49.wonder what he has left! Brutal! We are leaving here on BBC Two. But
:59:50. > :59:53.this continues, an BBC One. It has got a long way to go. One Show on
:59:54. > :00:04.BBC Two. For tennis, BBC One. Bye.
