:00:12. > :00:19.This is the national programme, now we are going to take you over to

:00:20. > :00:32.Wimbledon. COMMENTATOR: Present the trophy to a British winner.

:00:33. > :00:45.Brilliant! Oh, yes. That is perfect. Irresistible, majestic.

:00:46. > :00:51.Wimbledon champion again. Wimbledon, a place like no other in

:00:52. > :00:57.the sporting world. 140 years of history, 140 years of grass court

:00:58. > :01:03.tennis, 140 years of glorious memories. During that time

:01:04. > :01:07.generations have seen Legends born, champions made, heroes and heroines

:01:08. > :01:14.striving to win in their pursuit of greatness. 140 years is a long time,

:01:15. > :01:19.but Wimbledon is as relevant today as it was for the first

:01:20. > :01:25.Championships in 1877. To play and win here, even just to be here, it

:01:26. > :01:36.is a privilege. Yes, this place is special.

:01:37. > :01:47.I grew up dreaming and reading about Wimbledon my whole life. It was a

:01:48. > :01:51.family tradition. Wimbledon was sort of our Super Bowl.

:01:52. > :01:55.You could feel that traditional magical thing in those games.

:01:56. > :02:01.Walking through the gates, everything is so new. I was in awe

:02:02. > :02:07.of the whole place. It was just amazing. I immediately fell in love

:02:08. > :02:11.with it. This is just it! Love the court, the atmosphere of the place,

:02:12. > :02:17.the royalty in the box. It was different. You walk out on Centre

:02:18. > :02:26.Court to such a harsh before everybody explodes.

:02:27. > :02:35.UMPIRE: Choir please. This court definitely feels like

:02:36. > :02:38.home. Everything I have is because of this court.

:02:39. > :02:44.I will start again. It is not going to be easy. Thanks to everybody.

:02:45. > :02:49.It is great. Wimbledon is the Golden Globe you are aiming for. I came

:02:50. > :02:58.here for one reason only, to try to win Wimbledon. The waiting is over!

:02:59. > :03:04.It is like living in a dream world. It is a fairy tale. It is the most

:03:05. > :03:10.beautiful thing that can happen to you as a tennis player.

:03:11. > :03:17.Wimbledon in the words of so many great champions. What a proud

:03:18. > :03:20.history this clubhouse. The 2017 Championships are under way, the

:03:21. > :03:24.latest chapter in the greatest Grand Slam tennis tournament. To be

:03:25. > :03:29.crowned singles champion you must win seven matches over two weeks,

:03:30. > :03:33.with the pressure and expectation building with every round. We are

:03:34. > :03:39.ready across the BBC over the next two weeks to bring you a feast of

:03:40. > :03:44.live tennis on BBC One and BBC Two, the red button, the BBC Sport

:03:45. > :03:49.website and app and all social media outlets, including Twitter and

:03:50. > :03:52.Facebook. We want you to join the conversation using hashtag

:03:53. > :03:57.Wimbledon. Please let us know your thoughts.

:03:58. > :04:07.Hello and welcome to Wimbledon 2017, and to our studio, which has had a

:04:08. > :04:11.makeover, but it is always a privilege to be here with the BBC

:04:12. > :04:15.team to bring coverage of this famous tournament at the All-England

:04:16. > :04:23.lawn tennis club in south London. It is a special year for the BBC where

:04:24. > :04:27.we many anniversaries. 90 years since coverage on radio, eight years

:04:28. > :04:31.since television was broadcast and 50 years since colour television was

:04:32. > :04:34.broadcast from Centre Court. We will be looking back into the rich

:04:35. > :04:39.history of the tournament at hear from many great champions of the

:04:40. > :04:43.bars. What about the class of 2017? 15 Grand Slam winner 's, nine in

:04:44. > :04:53.action today. Andy Murray says he is fit and

:04:54. > :04:57.ready. The world number one begins the defence of his title on Centre

:04:58. > :05:05.Court against the unpredictable Alexander Bublik.

:05:06. > :05:10.Venus Williams made her debut in 1997, 20 years and five titles

:05:11. > :05:14.later, she is still among major contenders. She faces Elise Merton

:05:15. > :05:18.is in the first round. Fresh from winning a record tenth

:05:19. > :05:23.French Open, now he is after a Wimbledon hat-trick. He meets

:05:24. > :05:28.Australian John Millman. Jo Konta's great year means she is

:05:29. > :05:36.seeded six. Can she be the first British woman in 40 years to win a

:05:37. > :05:40.singles? Have first-round opponent is Hsieh Su-wei. Petra Kvitova house

:05:41. > :05:47.won the title twice but after a traumatic six months a third. A

:05:48. > :05:57.Wimbledon title would complete the brink of's ram -- Grand Slam set. He

:05:58. > :06:03.faces Medvedev. Heather Watson has slipped down the rankings but is

:06:04. > :06:11.back in form at the right time. She is on Court Number Two. Those are

:06:12. > :06:15.the matches we can look forward to and here is where you can see them.

:06:16. > :06:21.Andy Murray has started his campaign. We will go there shortly.

:06:22. > :06:24.Then Petra Kvitova and Wawrinka against Medvedev. That complete the

:06:25. > :06:29.line-up on Centre Court. Venus Williams is under way on Court

:06:30. > :06:33.Number One and then it is Rafael Nadal and Jo Konta. Let's hope she

:06:34. > :06:38.recovered from the horrendous back injury she sustained at Eastbourne.

:06:39. > :06:43.And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is already through. Not to look forward to.

:06:44. > :06:52.Simona Halep is on and Heather Watson will be on late evening on

:06:53. > :06:57.Court Number Two. A very special visitor here this

:06:58. > :07:00.morning. The new patron of the All-England Club, her Royal Highness

:07:01. > :07:06.the Duchess of Cambridge, who said she wanted to come to meet players.

:07:07. > :07:09.Martina Navratilova is there, amongst others. And also meeting the

:07:10. > :07:14.ball boys and seeing behind-the-scenes and how the club

:07:15. > :07:17.works. The Duchess of Cambridge is the new patron, taking over from Her

:07:18. > :07:23.Majesty the Queen. That was earlier today. Although it

:07:24. > :07:30.is just coming up to 2pm, we have results to bring you. I mention

:07:31. > :07:34.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through. This is how he finished it off against

:07:35. > :07:39.the British wild card Cameron Norrie, in his first Wimbledon. Up

:07:40. > :07:43.against a man in form, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rushing through his match.

:07:44. > :07:48.You will hear more from Cameron Norrie. He had a successful college

:07:49. > :08:00.career in America and we will hear more from him.

:08:01. > :08:05.The big shock of the day and sad news for this man, Nick Kyrgios. We

:08:06. > :08:10.knew he had a hip injury sustained at Queen's Club. He was two sets

:08:11. > :08:15.down against PSU 's Hubert and was forced to retire. -- against

:08:16. > :08:26.Herbert. Dustin Brown is through. This is the

:08:27. > :08:31.man who put out Rafael Nadal in 2015. One of the most charismatic

:08:32. > :08:36.players on the tour. Beating Joao Sousa. He goes through and will be

:08:37. > :08:40.rushing to Centre Court because he will face the winner of Andy Murray

:08:41. > :08:45.or Alexander Bublik. Disappointment for Laura Robson, who

:08:46. > :08:52.is fighting back after a wrist surgery she had in 2014. But she was

:08:53. > :08:59.up against the tall Brazilian with a big serve. The Brazilian was too

:09:00. > :09:05.good on Court number 18 today. And to update you on Court Number One.

:09:06. > :09:10.Venus Williams was leading 3-0 but Elise Merton 's has broken back and

:09:11. > :09:18.they have started in the tie-break with a mini-break for Venus. That

:09:19. > :09:23.matches on BBC Two. That will be on BBC Two shortly. And this match is

:09:24. > :09:31.on the red button. Simona Halep, she has a break of serve. That is the

:09:32. > :09:36.featured match on the red button. The French Open runner-up.

:09:37. > :09:45.We are heading to Centre Court. Henman Hill is always busy when it

:09:46. > :09:49.is an Andy Murray match and he came on as defending champion and this

:09:50. > :09:57.happened about 45 minutes ago, as Andy Murray made his way onto Centre

:09:58. > :10:03.Court. Sasha Bublik with the headphones. There were a lot of

:10:04. > :10:05.people in their seats. They wanted to be there to welcome back the

:10:06. > :10:22.defending champion. CHEERING

:10:23. > :10:30.That happened just about an hour ago.

:10:31. > :10:37.Andy Murray is in a hurry. Taking the first set 6-1 and a break up in

:10:38. > :10:37.the second. We can join this. The commentators on Centre Court Boris

:10:38. > :10:53.Becker and Andrew Castle. ANDREW CASTLE: As characteristic in

:10:54. > :10:59.this match, the exchanges in the forecourt have gone Murray's way. A

:11:00. > :11:08.shrug from Bublik. He is forced into playing another shot. A rally of 19

:11:09. > :11:28.shots, that one. No comparison will look favourable

:11:29. > :11:36.for the Jeunghun Wang, including in career records. 651 matches won for

:11:37. > :11:43.Andy Murray and just three for Bublik, who is new at this level.

:11:44. > :11:50.Two of those were top 20 wins. He is 20 years of age. He has a lot of

:11:51. > :11:57.firepower and has good technique. He has a lot going for him. The

:11:58. > :12:18.question will always be, can you put it together in one go?

:12:19. > :12:34.If you were the coach, coached Novak Djokovic to six titles. This sliced

:12:35. > :12:36.forehand, cometh the word? I would go mad. I would savour every

:12:37. > :13:33.forehand drop shot, pay me extra! The other area you would look at,

:13:34. > :13:38.Boris Becker, is the serve,. Not so much the first, he has a beautiful

:13:39. > :13:48.motion, powerful. The choice of second serve, really going for it,

:13:49. > :13:55.most times. The percentage just low. Three challenges under the Hawk-Eye

:13:56. > :13:59.system per set. If you are correct, you maintain that amount of

:14:00. > :14:16.challenges, if you are wrong, you lose one. And he was... Just. Look

:14:17. > :14:34.at Bublik. He goes down on one need. -- knee. He is a showman. Why not?

:14:35. > :14:39.I am looking for the rappers. There are supposed to be two rappers in

:14:40. > :14:51.the Bublik box. Two seats available, still. Maybe

:14:52. > :15:07.they are late. Rappers have long nights. Spot the rapper. Anybody?

:15:08. > :15:21.Do not tell me, another forehand sliced drop shot, at deuce. Maybe

:15:22. > :15:30.the rappers went to the wrong box. Come on, Bublik, we like Andy Murray

:15:31. > :15:34.play as defending champion, but we quite like this young man, as well.

:15:35. > :16:25.What will he do next? I do not think he knows.

:16:26. > :16:33.There is a little bit of good fortune in that, but even more of a

:16:34. > :16:36.superb touch. That was probably four centimetres further behind than he

:16:37. > :16:44.thought, Andy Murray, but it is gorgeous. I think he wanted to end

:16:45. > :16:53.the game and put his racket there. He has got the touch.

:16:54. > :17:03.Bublik seems to warm up on the server little bit. Much better. He

:17:04. > :17:25.is orchestrating the crowd now. One set and a break down!

:17:26. > :17:31.Sasha Bublik was described as interesting before the match by Andy

:17:32. > :17:36.Murray and that is right. 20 years of age, this is his debut. He lost

:17:37. > :17:40.in qualifying but got in because somebody pulled out. He got into the

:17:41. > :17:45.main draw and he is enjoying his time on the big stage. He has had a

:17:46. > :17:57.couple of wins which makes you take natives that he is part of the last

:17:58. > :18:03.year, 205 in the world. Right now, 135 in the world. He is climbing

:18:04. > :18:10.rapidly. And steadily improving. I like what I see. I do not know if

:18:11. > :18:22.Ivan agrees with that! Bublik is talented, and interesting character.

:18:23. > :18:30.Tennis needs characters. As long as the performance is the objective. He

:18:31. > :18:38.has certainly got style. The substance, presumably, will come at

:18:39. > :18:43.this level. Andy Murray's dad, up in the Royal box, dressed super-smart.

:18:44. > :19:16.The defending champion a set and a break.

:19:17. > :19:26.All of a sudden, he gets some of these. You get a different match.

:19:27. > :19:34.But this hit landed on the commentary box with a boom. The

:19:35. > :19:36.forehand looks effective. It is not a weak shot. Why would he go in with

:19:37. > :20:15.the slice? If we were ever worried about Andy

:20:16. > :21:02.Murray's hip, for me, that answered the question.

:21:03. > :21:18.UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:21:19. > :21:50.UMPIRE: Mr Bublik is challenging the call. The ball was called in. Andy

:21:51. > :21:52.Murray has not served an ace yet, which is unusual, almost an hour on

:21:53. > :22:31.Centre Court. Not by much. That was excellent

:22:32. > :22:49.footwork by Andy Murray. Lovely dexterity in the hands,

:22:50. > :23:41.especially on the backhand side. Andy Murray's box. They should be

:23:42. > :24:00.satisfied with their man, so far. Performing well under pressure.

:24:01. > :24:14.Andy Murray playing a player well outside the top 100 in the world. He

:24:15. > :24:15.has won 129 matches and lost zero against players like this at Grand

:24:16. > :24:46.Slams. Andy is number one in the world and

:24:47. > :24:49.we are back to the big four because Andy is followed by Novak, Rafa

:24:50. > :25:30.Nadal and Roger, all familiar names. That is easy power, and remember at

:25:31. > :25:34.the beginning of his career, where he was happy to soak up the

:25:35. > :25:38.pressure. When that changed, he started to produce his best tennis,

:25:39. > :25:52.taking the ball on inside the baseline. His hand eye coordination

:25:53. > :25:59.is remarkable. Against most of the big serve players he counterattacks

:26:00. > :26:14.and reacts beautifully. You were coaching Novak three years.

:26:15. > :26:18.You called that off in December. He has since said goodbye to the whole

:26:19. > :26:24.team, which was a strange move as far as many were concerned, but he

:26:25. > :26:29.has decided to do that. You coached against Andy Murray many times.

:26:30. > :26:33.Captivating matches. Did you talk to Novak a lot about Andy's game or

:26:34. > :26:42.focus on Novak's game was matter of course. But in the interests of

:26:43. > :26:45.sportsmanship I am not going to tell the world how I told Novak to play

:26:46. > :26:51.Andy Murray but we did have a good record. It is called preparing your

:26:52. > :26:57.player for the best of their abilities. And the media analysis,

:26:58. > :27:04.background checks, following your opponent through tournaments. Would

:27:05. > :27:12.have known with a hip injury, a couple of days before. Those are the

:27:13. > :27:22.did -- details that Ivan does, and Jamie does. A set and a break, Andy

:27:23. > :27:47.Murray. The first match on Centre Court this year.

:27:48. > :29:21.Well done. Another strong service game by Murray. OK, did Novak get

:29:22. > :29:26.nervous playing against Murray, or more against Federer, more against

:29:27. > :29:32.Rafa Nadal? You get nervous against everybody. Those players are human,

:29:33. > :29:39.especially the likes of Murray and Federer.

:29:40. > :29:43.UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:29:44. > :30:05.Absolutely normal. Another low percentage shot by

:30:06. > :30:33.Bublik. Behind the baseline, moving backwards.

:30:34. > :30:52.The big difference between the top players and others is they really

:30:53. > :31:04.have their game and every body adjusts to their game. Bublik and

:31:05. > :31:05.many others find it difficult. Andy Murray, the defending champion, will

:31:06. > :31:21.have to serve for the second set. Certainly an interesting contest.

:31:22. > :31:29.Murray is in for an interesting match. Never really out of third or

:31:30. > :31:34.fourth gear. His hip seems to be OK. He went through four rounds last

:31:35. > :31:37.year before losing a set to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. I run my back if

:31:38. > :31:43.you are injured would certainly help. On the left, his physical

:31:44. > :31:49.trainer, we'll know more than anyone what is going on. You want to go

:31:50. > :31:55.through the first week, if you are one of the favourites, as smooth and

:31:56. > :32:01.quick as possible. Eventually you have to challenge and go four, five

:32:02. > :32:09.sets. It happened to him last year. At this stage of the tournament, it

:32:10. > :32:15.would be more reasons why he wants to go through today very smoothly,

:32:16. > :32:31.just to give their hip more recovery time.

:32:32. > :32:36.Let's see if there are some fireworks at the beginning of this

:32:37. > :32:41.came from Bublik. Andy Murray serving for a two set lead. UMPIRE:

:32:42. > :33:17.Let, first service. Well, that was interesting for two

:33:18. > :33:21.reasons. He played the shortfall in and Murray probably did not think

:33:22. > :33:28.the ball was coming over. He gave up the ghost on the run forward. Maybe

:33:29. > :33:41.because he was surprised at the net call. I wonder if it was the injury.

:33:42. > :34:11.Oh, dear! A little bit worried now. A little bit.

:34:12. > :34:21.You receive. You give one of these talented youngsters a bit of a sniff

:34:22. > :34:27.and they love it. Just a 90 mile an hour serve, not particularly to the

:34:28. > :34:32.line. This is quite a tight game. Andy Murray with three break points,

:34:33. > :35:37.Bublik. Wow, some theatrical shrieks! That

:35:38. > :36:04.forehand error. Murray keeps it together.

:36:05. > :36:21.Bublik has had five break points but taken none of them. Three in this

:36:22. > :36:54.game in a row. It shows his excitement.

:36:55. > :37:07.Oh, wow! What a forehand! Again, the decibel volley from Bublik went up

:37:08. > :37:15.on his last forehand. Matched in complete silence by this piece of

:37:16. > :37:23.work cross-court. He does not miss many of them. At that moment,

:37:24. > :37:49.completely off the court. That is the sign of a champion.

:37:50. > :37:58.Five straight points. Andy Murray recovers from 0-40 down. He is two

:37:59. > :38:06.set up in defence of his Wimbledon championship at Wimbledon. SUE

:38:07. > :38:13.BARKER: So impressive. Andy Murray on his way. We will be right back

:38:14. > :38:19.with this one. Over on Court Number One, Venus Williams took the first

:38:20. > :38:31.set. She has broken twice in the second. She is in charge. That match

:38:32. > :38:36.over on BBC Two. This match is on Court Number Two. Our featured match

:38:37. > :38:45.on the red button. Simona Halep a set and two breaks of serve up. That

:38:46. > :38:59.match on Court Two. Over on Court three, Elina Svitolina in a tough

:39:00. > :39:04.match. She has taken the first set 7-5. A wonderful story for her

:39:05. > :39:12.opponent. She reached three Grand Slam doubles finals, gave up, went

:39:13. > :39:17.off to play cricket and is now playing tennis again. The number

:39:18. > :39:22.four seed has taken the opening set. You can see that on the red button

:39:23. > :39:26.and on the website. Keep up to date with all of those matches. Everyone

:39:27. > :39:28.enjoying the match on Centre Court. That is where we are heading right

:39:29. > :39:42.now. So, here we are, day one at

:39:43. > :39:46.Wimbledon. Just fantastic. 13 days of tennis. Just like the start of

:39:47. > :39:48.the fantastical as you have been looking forward to. I hope you

:39:49. > :40:07.enjoyed it, everybody. Andy Murray is looking to continue

:40:08. > :40:22.his momentum. Trying to get the early break in the third set.

:40:23. > :40:47.When he is walking like this, definitely not right.

:40:48. > :41:08.After Bublik missed that shot, he almost ran into the ball boy. A nice

:41:09. > :41:30.little low five, we call it. Number nine, I believe, double

:41:31. > :42:54.fault. Ten aces. Driving from mid-court, the forehand

:42:55. > :43:06.sliced drop shop playing a half-volley lob. What about the

:43:07. > :43:11.basics! Not bad today. -- not there today.

:43:12. > :43:26.The basics, on a break point commit you do not double fault. I am afraid

:43:27. > :43:34.he has. 11 double faults. Only two sets and one game played. Only his

:43:35. > :43:46.11th tour match. Certainly one to watch. We have seen a number of

:43:47. > :43:59.youngsters we have not seen before. Medvedev is one.

:44:00. > :44:22.And Zverev, your young countrymen. There is certainly a change in the

:44:23. > :44:36.air. Yes, Sasha Zverev. Probably the best in his group. The match will be

:44:37. > :44:44.called off now. The rain is coming down. The umpire will probably get

:44:45. > :44:54.the players just to stay where they are. I do not think the roof will be

:44:55. > :45:01.put across. If it does go across, it will be a lot quicker to commence

:45:02. > :45:09.playing. We have had some new LED lights installed which warm up very

:45:10. > :45:14.quickly. It will be a lot quicker operation. Probably about ten

:45:15. > :45:22.minutes or so. We do not anticipate this will take long. The referee is

:45:23. > :45:28.a former British Davis Cup player. He used to stand around the baseline

:45:29. > :45:38.like you cannot leave. He played with Jonathan Smith in the Davis

:45:39. > :45:44.Cup. We have seen so many difficult falls, including Jo Konta at

:45:45. > :45:49.Eastbourne. She fell on her middle spine. Her thoracic spine was hurt.

:45:50. > :45:56.I saw that and was really worried for a couple of minutes. She got up

:45:57. > :46:01.and have side effects the next day. Here come the team. Clearly they

:46:02. > :46:13.have got information that the next pulse of rain could be stronger than

:46:14. > :46:15.this. They have got to regain the momentum with this sheet and pull it

:46:16. > :46:32.over. That is the end of play just for the

:46:33. > :46:41.moment. Andy Murray after an hour and 21 minutes, a set and 1-0 up.

:46:42. > :46:44.Lots of double faults doing the damage for Bublik. He is

:46:45. > :46:55.entertaining but I do not think he has enough to win this one.

:46:56. > :47:07.Bad news that Nick Kyrgios was forced to pull out earlier on. The

:47:08. > :47:15.tournament has to do without him. Hip problems, it would seem, for

:47:16. > :47:16.Andy Murray. He is in control, the defending champion. Hopefully, more

:47:17. > :47:30.tennis soon. SUE BARKER: What a disappointment

:47:31. > :47:34.this is! Watching the weather forecast this morning there was no

:47:35. > :47:40.sign of rain. Everyone sits and waits. This is the scene on Centre

:47:41. > :47:49.Court. Everyone had linked under umbrellas. Outside, play is

:47:50. > :47:55.continuing on many of the courts. Court 14 is still playing. There

:47:56. > :48:00.they are. Play continuing. That suggests it is not very heavy but

:48:01. > :48:04.protecting Centre Court and Andy and Sasha have made their way back to

:48:05. > :48:09.the locker room. They do not seem to be too worried about the rain on the

:48:10. > :48:17.outside courts. Plenty happening. That is the scene at Wimbledon right

:48:18. > :48:23.now. So, while we wait for the players coming out on Centre Court

:48:24. > :48:30.but let's have a chat with Boris and Andy. It is interesting that they

:48:31. > :48:36.are playing outside, so, what is happening? Is it raining on Centre

:48:37. > :48:40.Court only? That cannot be right. Is that the situation? That is the

:48:41. > :48:46.situation. All the matches are on all of the outside courts. I do not

:48:47. > :48:51.think you have too long a weight, which is good. It is a big relief to

:48:52. > :48:59.all the Andy Murray fans that he is looking good. The beginning, he was

:49:00. > :49:07.a bit testy. He was not sure. Some of the quality of his play, he was

:49:08. > :49:11.more worried about his hip. He had opening break points on the serve of

:49:12. > :49:16.Andy Murray. Once the match got going and he was more confident with

:49:17. > :49:24.his movement, the Murray of old came back. He was up a break and we felt

:49:25. > :49:32.sorry for Bublik. Seemed like it was lost in translation. He started to

:49:33. > :49:37.regroup and play more consistent. A wonderful second set. The beginning

:49:38. > :49:42.of the third set, Bublik decided to hit a couple of double faults,

:49:43. > :49:45.especially on break point and that gave Andy Murray believed. For all

:49:46. > :49:52.Andy Murray fans out there, it is looking good. We were thinking, how

:49:53. > :49:57.many matches has Andy had in preparation for the budding? In the

:49:58. > :50:03.second set, facing the three break points to how well did he play! Once

:50:04. > :50:09.adrenaline flows injuries do not hurt so much was he has not had a

:50:10. > :50:13.lot of tennis. We thought he was playing himself into form in the

:50:14. > :50:17.French Open. Still world number one but had not won that match by his

:50:18. > :50:23.very high standards. One was asking about how much it took out of him

:50:24. > :50:26.winning five tournaments last year. He needed matches. Went to the

:50:27. > :50:34.semifinal of the French Open and we thought this sort of famine for him

:50:35. > :50:39.was over and then he lost to Jordan Thomson, who played great. He

:50:40. > :50:44.definitely does need matches. Stepping back onto Centre Court as

:50:45. > :50:50.defending champion, he is a man for this stage. If he can get two or

:50:51. > :50:54.three matches under his belt, he can play into form. Winning breeds

:50:55. > :51:02.confidence. You can strut your stuff when you have a few wins under your

:51:03. > :51:07.belt. Every player is different. Some players skipped altogether the

:51:08. > :51:13.grass court tournaments. Novak only played a late entry to Eastbourne.

:51:14. > :51:18.He ended up winning it. Every player has a different preparation. Andy

:51:19. > :51:22.Murray, he likes to play Queen's, win it, and come here as a strong

:51:23. > :51:30.favourite. That has changed this year. He has played so many matches

:51:31. > :51:35.in his life, so he never has a lack of matches. On the grass only one

:51:36. > :51:40.prior to the championship. He could not play any exhibitions because of

:51:41. > :51:45.the injury. There was a question of disbelief. He was not sure about it.

:51:46. > :51:53.As the match progressed, he gained in stature and quality. In the

:51:54. > :51:58.second set he started to play really good tennis. We will see some of

:51:59. > :52:02.that good tennis. We were also worried how well he would be moving

:52:03. > :52:08.back he was moving well in this match. He was moving well when he

:52:09. > :52:14.had to move well. It was almost a question of when he was forced into

:52:15. > :52:19.it, he moved well. Being on the court... You can probably see from

:52:20. > :52:26.where you are. Between points, it is a bit of a struggle. He obviously

:52:27. > :52:31.has a wonderful touch. When he pulled wide on that particular

:52:32. > :52:37.forehand, it was remarkable how quickly he reacted. Who knows what

:52:38. > :52:41.is going on? We do know he has had a couple of injections into the hip.

:52:42. > :52:47.The last thing you need with an injury is a break. You are off court

:52:48. > :52:52.and you call down. It is not easy to get yourself warmed up and back on

:52:53. > :52:58.court. That is the last thing you need. The body cools down. You have

:52:59. > :53:07.to warm up again, start all over again. If you have an injury scare,

:53:08. > :53:12.that is the last thing you want. He is a veteran. I am sure they will do

:53:13. > :53:17.everything to get him match fit. All his team must be saying, get through

:53:18. > :53:21.a few more games and have another day with the physio and the train

:53:22. > :53:25.and get yourself better for Wednesday. That is the plan. He

:53:26. > :53:32.wants to go through the first couple of matches without being pushed too

:53:33. > :53:38.hard. Obviously, opponents know about injuries. Everybody is online.

:53:39. > :53:44.Everybody reads the press. Nobody knows how bad it is. The key is, he

:53:45. > :53:47.needs to get through today quite smoothly and quickly, have a day to

:53:48. > :53:54.recover and then be ready for Wednesday. It is lovely looking at

:53:55. > :54:00.you both. What is happening on Centre Court? We are OK. It is a

:54:01. > :54:08.lovely little box in here. We thoroughly enjoy being in this

:54:09. > :54:14.office. It is so fantastic being back at Wimbledon and to have the

:54:15. > :54:20.view that we all have. It is fantastic. The grass is pristine and

:54:21. > :54:26.perfect. It is dressed up so beautifully. It is very tidy. The

:54:27. > :54:36.desk in front of you was very tidy. We knew you were coming. We do make

:54:37. > :54:47.sure things are just so for when Lady Sue turns up. On behalf of

:54:48. > :54:52.everybody watching, including myself, thank you so much making an

:54:53. > :54:57.effort. You will be back working in just a moment. We will hear more

:54:58. > :55:01.from Boris and Andy as soon as the players walk back on court. Play is

:55:02. > :55:08.continuing on other courts. We can just update you. Venus Williams won

:55:09. > :55:18.the first set and is a break of serve up. That match is over on BBC

:55:19. > :55:22.Two. Over on Court Two, the feature match on the red button. Simona

:55:23. > :55:28.Halep is racing through. She has just one. I really good

:55:29. > :55:49.start for the French Open runner up. Over on Court three, Elina

:55:50. > :55:58.Svitolina, the number four seed in the Championships. It is 2-2 up

:55:59. > :56:02.against Ash Barty from Australia. The number four seed a set up. That

:56:03. > :56:08.match also available on the BBC Sport website. The good news on

:56:09. > :56:14.Centre Court, Boris and Andy will be getting ready because the players

:56:15. > :56:23.are back out. They have not been out long so I am not sure

:56:24. > :56:36.let's rejoin Boris and Andy. The pimples on the bottom of the shoes

:56:37. > :56:43.help you stay upright on the grass. Andy Murray I believe will come

:56:44. > :56:50.straight out to serve. I think it is a minute and a half short of a warm

:56:51. > :56:57.up. Is that right? Straight in? Straight in, here we go. A set and a

:56:58. > :56:58.break or two sets and a break to Andy Murray has everyone settles

:56:59. > :57:14.down. The grass court is already very

:57:15. > :59:49.quick. That is without the rain. That was the most important point of

:59:50. > :00:05.the match so far. Some rain coming down quite hard now. The players are

:00:06. > :00:15.off. Here come the crew once again. Neal stubbly is the groundsman.

:00:16. > :00:20.Security of the ball boys and ball girls pushed into the concrete area.

:00:21. > :00:29.It always amuses me that the umpire has two stay up his chair. He is

:00:30. > :00:32.pushed at the right speed in the right to Richard. Another break and

:00:33. > :00:37.they have only been playing for a couple of minutes.

:00:38. > :00:47.The weather forecast was at precisely 2:30pm there would be a

:00:48. > :00:56.light shower for half an hour, and it rained at 2:31pm. The players go

:00:57. > :01:03.through some double doors. You saw Andy Murray disappearing through

:01:04. > :01:08.green double doors and into an antechamber. There are beautiful

:01:09. > :01:12.glass doors, nicely engraved, you go through those two and up the stairs,

:01:13. > :01:17.on the right, the left, normally the right, where the changing rooms are,

:01:18. > :01:22.around, through fire doors and the like and you get to the changing

:01:23. > :01:31.room. Everything close by. The Royal up there. You go past guests. Debra

:01:32. > :01:35.Jeavons, one of the top sports administrators is there, talking to

:01:36. > :01:39.the Duchess of Cambridge, who is a pretty good tennis player. I am

:01:40. > :01:44.fairly sure she beats her husband soundly every time they play. And

:01:45. > :01:48.had thought about trying to become a tennis player. I heard she is an

:01:49. > :01:54.avid player, playing a couple of times a week. This is great for the

:01:55. > :01:59.championship to have her. She is the patron of the All-England Tennis

:02:00. > :02:06.Club now, taking over from Her Majesty the Queen, who held the

:02:07. > :02:08.position 64 years, but I do not think any secret tennis was not the

:02:09. > :02:18.Queen's favourite sport. No doubt about Kate's desire to play and to

:02:19. > :02:22.watch the sport of tennis. She was reminiscing with Sue Barker that she

:02:23. > :02:26.once came to Wimbledon and was thoroughly embarrassed by her father

:02:27. > :02:32.when watching Pete Sampras and Tim Henman. Tim walked past and her

:02:33. > :02:43.father said, "Hello, Pete." And it was Tim! The true athletes. Herds of

:02:44. > :02:48.wildebeest majestically across the plains etc. Here they come in super

:02:49. > :02:59.slow motion and on HD. Magnificent stuff. Make an assessment of this

:03:00. > :03:04.young man Bublik. We talked about Sascha Zverev, one of the new

:03:05. > :03:08.generation of players. From what you have seen of Sasha Bublik so far,

:03:09. > :03:16.what do you think? I like the potential. I like his personality,

:03:17. > :03:23.he is not afraid, he is a showman, he plays to the crowd and has

:03:24. > :03:27.conversations with his opponent. They gave each other a high fives.

:03:28. > :03:36.When they crossed. The umpire has not seen that before. From the

:03:37. > :03:40.tennis point of view, I think he has talent and potential. Sometimes he

:03:41. > :03:45.chooses the wrong shot at the wrong time, but that will come with

:03:46. > :03:52.experience and many more matches. He has only played seven on the ATP

:03:53. > :03:57.Tour. He has power, he is tall, he has a good serve, has good ground

:03:58. > :04:01.strokes. Sometimes he does not know when to do what. Andy Murray seeded

:04:02. > :04:05.number one at Wimbledon the first time. The Australian Open this year

:04:06. > :04:13.was the first time he was seeded number one and he lost to Mischa

:04:14. > :04:18.Zverev, Sasha's older brother. He will play Dustin Brown of Germany in

:04:19. > :04:23.the second round. He knows how to play on a grass court, of course.

:04:24. > :04:29.Further on, Fabio Fognini, who has beaten him this year and in the top

:04:30. > :04:33.half of the draw, we are without Kyrgios. Lucas Pouille could be a

:04:34. > :04:44.factor. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is always a factor. You mentioned Shapovalov.

:04:45. > :04:50.Shapovalov. It took me a week to say that. He is the Wimbledon junior

:04:51. > :05:00.champion and a great lefty. Had a couple of good wins at Queen's. It

:05:01. > :05:04.could be exciting for Andy Murray. Nadal in the same half. Djokovic and

:05:05. > :05:10.Federer in the bottom half. A fascinating men's draw at Wimbledon.

:05:11. > :05:17.SUE BARKER: Very disappointing. Everybody looking at the weather app

:05:18. > :05:20.and mine says it should clear in six minutes. Sad scenes, seeing the

:05:21. > :05:27.covers at Wimbledon on the opening day. It certainly was not for cars.

:05:28. > :05:33.Hopefully play again soon but we can update you with results from earlier

:05:34. > :05:38.and Dustin Brown, he defeated Rafa Nadal in 2015. He came through his

:05:39. > :05:46.opening round against Susa in four sets and will face either Andy

:05:47. > :05:51.Murray or Bublik. A big crowd favourite, Dustin Brown. From one

:05:52. > :05:56.great entertainer to another, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He came through

:05:57. > :06:04.against Cameron Norrie, the British wildcard. Just too good for the

:06:05. > :06:12.Britain today. A former semifinalist here. I am sure we will hear more

:06:13. > :06:20.from Cameron Norrie, playing in his first Wimbledon today and hopefully

:06:21. > :06:24.enjoy the experience. A celebration for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Sad scenes

:06:25. > :06:32.on Court number three were of Nick Kyrgios. This when he was two sets

:06:33. > :06:37.to love down. He had the trainer on court. We knew he had a hip injury.

:06:38. > :06:42.He said it would not be good enough to try to win three sets which she

:06:43. > :06:47.would have to do against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Nick Kyrgios

:06:48. > :06:55.very upset, having to pull out of Wimbledon. Kei Nishikori was in a

:06:56. > :07:03.hurry in his match today, losing just four games.

:07:04. > :07:22.Madison Keys is three. She had a minor wrist surgery after the French

:07:23. > :07:24.Open to remove scar tissue and we wondered how she would get on. No

:07:25. > :07:40.sign of a problem with the wrist. Madison Keys loves the grass courts.

:07:41. > :07:42.Simona Halep loves the clay courts but today you would not know it.

:07:43. > :07:56.Very good on the grass. Simona Halep, who was a finalist at

:07:57. > :08:03.the French Open in the marvellous final against Ostapenko, she is

:08:04. > :08:06.three. We will keep an eye on the clouds and covers at Centre Court

:08:07. > :08:17.but it is the opening day and there are many ways to watch Wimbledon on

:08:18. > :08:23.the BBC. We have every crosscourt, forehand, drop shot and overhead

:08:24. > :08:31.smash covered on the BBC. You can watch action from 15 courts live and

:08:32. > :08:35.on the website, BBC iPlayer and app on your mobile, tablet, games

:08:36. > :08:37.console or connected TV. Press the red button on the TV remote control

:08:38. > :08:47.and you will get coverage to six additional courts.

:08:48. > :08:53.SUE BARKER: Bay waiting patiently on the hill. Rafael Nadal will be on

:08:54. > :09:00.Court Number One in just a moment. He comes in having won his tenth

:09:01. > :09:06.French Open. Here he is looking for his third Wimbledon title and Lee

:09:07. > :09:09.McKenzie caught up with him. Heading into Wimbledon, would you

:09:10. > :09:16.say it is the best physical shape you have been coming into this

:09:17. > :09:22.tournament for a while? For a while, probably yes. It is true I did not

:09:23. > :09:26.play on grass for a couple of years so that is always a challenge but I

:09:27. > :09:34.think I worked well during the whole week and let see if I am able to

:09:35. > :09:40.compete again. How long did it take you to get over your tenth title at

:09:41. > :09:44.Roland Garros? Maybe not physically, but emotionally. Not only Roland

:09:45. > :09:53.Garros that what had happened. All the place it had been intense.

:09:54. > :09:59.Winning ten tournaments. And the tournament in Madrid, at home. It

:10:00. > :10:05.was very special. I needed rest after and I needed to see why people

:10:06. > :10:11.and to stay relaxed. I would have loved to be playing at Queen's, but,

:10:12. > :10:18.it was a little bit too quick, the transition from clay to grass and

:10:19. > :10:24.for my body, I needed to start low on the grass again, which is what I

:10:25. > :10:27.did. I am sure you are sick of talking about the knees, but how

:10:28. > :10:32.much do you have to protect yourself to get through a tournament like

:10:33. > :10:35.Wimbledon, and do you do it by changing your game or

:10:36. > :10:46.rehabilitation? I cannot change much my style, but at the same time, I

:10:47. > :10:50.needs to be healthy. If I am not healthy, everything is more

:10:51. > :10:55.difficult. The experience of injuries in my career, I tell you,

:10:56. > :11:00.it is impossible to compete at the highest level if you have too many

:11:01. > :11:04.problems. Is this the kind of place, once you get through the first

:11:05. > :11:08.match, you can breathe a sigh of relief and assess where your mind

:11:09. > :11:15.is, how your body is feeling? From the beginning, it is not like

:11:16. > :11:25.another event, sometimes on clay, if I play normal, here, you do not know

:11:26. > :11:33.what will happen. It is important to be through the first two rounds,

:11:34. > :11:38.then anything can happen. Joining me in the studio is John Lowe eight.

:11:39. > :11:42.Rafael Nadal, how incredible was that achievement at the French Open?

:11:43. > :11:51.To win the same Grand Slam ten times? We'd never thought we would

:11:52. > :11:54.hear that. It is impossible! The way he won, it looked impossible for him

:11:55. > :12:00.to be beaten and you look at him and think he could win another two,

:12:01. > :12:04.three. Also the Australian Open he played brilliantly. Only because of

:12:05. > :12:09.Roger Federer, this majestic player, who put on the accelerator,

:12:10. > :12:14.otherwise he would have won the first two Grand Slams of the year.

:12:15. > :12:20.This is not his favourite surface, he does not trust it. He is not very

:12:21. > :12:24.comfortable but he has won it. He has the players in the first rounds

:12:25. > :12:28.who can cause problems and they seem to play the matches of their lives

:12:29. > :12:35.when they play him. But this year has been such a good year, maybe he

:12:36. > :12:39.thinks he can win it again. He seems in good shape physically. He seems

:12:40. > :12:49.well and he has played so well this year, I think he has a great shot

:12:50. > :12:52.here. He says he loves to get set for shots and on grass, the feet

:12:53. > :12:55.move a little bit and you can slip. If you are not confident in your

:12:56. > :13:00.stance it can affect you mentally? The first couple of rounds, as he

:13:01. > :13:06.said, if he can get through them, then we will see. There is something

:13:07. > :13:10.about him this year. I am not sure he had the belief he would get back

:13:11. > :13:16.to where he has and he has done it well and quickly and his camp seems

:13:17. > :13:20.confident. He has a good coaching setup with Carlos. I think he feels

:13:21. > :13:25.he can go all the way. He would not enter if he did not think he could

:13:26. > :13:30.win. Carla said he wanted him to be more aggressive and he has. He did

:13:31. > :13:41.not just win the French Open, he demolished them all. -- Carlos. He

:13:42. > :13:45.made it looked like a second-class field the way he took them apart. We

:13:46. > :13:47.will watch to see how he gets closer to the baseline on grass and see if

:13:48. > :13:55.he has the confidence of movement. He is serving well. His volley is

:13:56. > :13:59.good. His slice has improved on this surface. If he wins a couple of

:14:00. > :14:04.rounds, he will be dangerous. Rafa Nadal and Roger, they can have a few

:14:05. > :14:10.months out of the game and it almost does you good, they come back

:14:11. > :14:15.stronger. Federer, what he has done, he belongs on a different planet.

:14:16. > :14:20.Rafer is up there. These players, a couple of years ago, did we think

:14:21. > :14:25.they would be winning Grand Slams any more? Probably not. They are

:14:26. > :14:30.number one and two players so far this year on form. He will look at

:14:31. > :14:34.it and think, I have beaten everybody easily in the French, got

:14:35. > :14:40.one slam under my belt and almost got another. Nobody thinks I can win

:14:41. > :14:47.it. But he does, and that matters. When you look back 12 months ago,

:14:48. > :14:52.Novak Djokovic came here holding all four Grand Slam titles. He is the

:14:53. > :14:57.most extraordinary of the big four. I put Wawrinka in there, not on

:14:58. > :15:02.grass. He is the wildcard in the tournament. We do not know which

:15:03. > :15:07.Novak will turn up. He won Eastbourne, which was great, but his

:15:08. > :15:11.year has been spotty. Some of the things he says in the press, at

:15:12. > :15:16.Eastbourne, he said it is almost good I am not one of the favourites,

:15:17. > :15:20.and will take things slowly. I am thinking it does not sound like a

:15:21. > :15:25.Wimbledon winner. Maybe he is trying to take off the pressure, the great

:15:26. > :15:28.champions thrive on pressure. Maybe this will be the tournament to get

:15:29. > :15:34.it back but in one year, it is amazing it happened to Djokovic,

:15:35. > :15:37.because he looked unbeatable. It shows mentally how important that

:15:38. > :15:42.is. Everybody works on the physical side that the mental side is as

:15:43. > :15:49.important, and it is for Andy Murray. We saw at Queen's when he

:15:50. > :15:53.lost, he had no matches. Holdout of the exhibition matches but looking

:15:54. > :15:58.OK and getting the job on Centre Court done. We are concerned about

:15:59. > :16:01.Queen's. Not just the manner of his losing first round, he did that

:16:02. > :16:08.before and got to the final but it was the way he lost. His forehand, I

:16:09. > :16:14.have not seen it that bad in years. His shots were not penetrating. It

:16:15. > :16:18.was concerning. He has had injury problems. If he gets through the

:16:19. > :16:22.first couple of rounds, loves grass, his best surface, and once he gets

:16:23. > :16:28.here with the crowd supporting him, he will be a big threat. It looks

:16:29. > :16:33.like ground staff are coming on the outside courts and possibly taking

:16:34. > :16:37.off the covers. Looking around the crowds, there are no umbrellas up.

:16:38. > :16:45.The ground staff going on all of the courts. Certainly good signs we will

:16:46. > :16:51.get place soon. This is Centre Court. A hive of activity. They will

:16:52. > :16:55.be getting the cover off and, hopefully, they will get the players

:16:56. > :16:59.on. The roof is staying open. This is the scene at Wimbledon and we

:17:00. > :17:05.have so much tennis to look forward to. The British number one man is on

:17:06. > :17:11.Centre Court. Jo Konta will be on court later. The question

:17:12. > :17:14.surrounding Jo Konta is how she has recovered from the injury following

:17:15. > :17:23.the fall in Eastbourne. Russell went to ask.

:17:24. > :17:30.Good to see you here, looking fit and healthy, how are you feeling

:17:31. > :17:37.after that horrible fall? It was a little bit of a nasty fall.

:17:38. > :17:42.COMMENTATOR: Back did not look good. Watching it back it does not look

:17:43. > :17:46.good, but the initial trauma of it on the court was also magnified

:17:47. > :17:52.because of the shock of it and the way it felt when it happened and it

:17:53. > :17:56.affected me the following couple of days, hence I could not continue at

:17:57. > :18:06.Eastbourne but I am doing everything I can to recover well and making

:18:07. > :18:12.sure I am mentally prepared. You play Hsieh Su-wei in a first round,

:18:13. > :18:18.as you did in Roland Garros. It is exciting and another opportunity to

:18:19. > :18:21.play against her. She is capable. A Wimbledon champion in doubles and

:18:22. > :18:26.can play on grass and most importantly, I will be going in

:18:27. > :18:32.there preparing well and trying to stick closely to the game plan and

:18:33. > :18:35.most importantly enjoying being on court 11. Andy Murray said there are

:18:36. > :18:40.drawbacks about being at Wimbledon as a British player where there are

:18:41. > :18:46.cameras and fans around. Do you enjoy it? Do you find it a

:18:47. > :18:50.distraction? I think it is a good problem to have, a positive thing, I

:18:51. > :18:57.think. It is putting our sport on the map. And it is putting the

:18:58. > :19:02.women's side a little bit more. I think overall it is an exciting

:19:03. > :19:13.things. SUE BARKER: The women's game is so

:19:14. > :19:18.exciting at the moment and Jo Konta talking about her opponent, Hsieh

:19:19. > :19:25.Su-wei, not an easy match. A tricky player. Very tricky and not the draw

:19:26. > :19:31.she would've liked. When she says she is looking forward to being on

:19:32. > :19:34.Court One. She has to believe that, she has two embrace Wimbledon. There

:19:35. > :19:39.were comments she made a week ago when she was a bit abrasive with a

:19:40. > :19:45.reporter who asked a question he was entitled to and she got a bit

:19:46. > :19:50.agitated. That is OK, but you have to embrace the situation like Andy

:19:51. > :19:55.Murray does, like Tim Henman did. If you look at her drawer, 15 women can

:19:56. > :20:01.win this tournament. No one can say there is a clear favourite. If she

:20:02. > :20:05.plays the sort of game she can with her serve, movement and confidence

:20:06. > :20:09.she has, she can be a big threat, but she has to believe she can win

:20:10. > :20:13.it and she has to embrace the situation of being here with the

:20:14. > :20:19.pressure of being a British player. You said there could be 15 who could

:20:20. > :20:25.win it. We have done a brave thing, try to predict the last eight. There

:20:26. > :20:30.it is. We can look at it. This is what we think might happen. We might

:20:31. > :20:37.have to revisit this next Tuesday to see how far we go. Angelique Kerber

:20:38. > :20:48.has not really proven herself here. Jo Konta we have put through to meet

:20:49. > :20:52.Simona Halep. Very tricky. Hold on, where is Kvitova? This is not me,

:20:53. > :21:03.can I tell you! This is not my choice. This is on the seeding, it

:21:04. > :21:08.is not our projection. Kvitova would have to play Jo Konta. I am glad we

:21:09. > :21:14.cleared that up. I was thinking, what has happened here? Unlike the

:21:15. > :21:18.men, they go by the rankings. I am not sure Angelique Kerber would be

:21:19. > :21:22.number one seed and Simona Halep number two had they looked at the

:21:23. > :21:28.grass court play and what Kvitova has done, even though she has been

:21:29. > :21:34.out so long, after being stabbed by an intruder. What a fairy tale

:21:35. > :21:38.return. She said today in interviews that, or yesterday, people saying

:21:39. > :21:43.she is a slight favourite, she said, I am not, I have not played enough.

:21:44. > :21:49.I'm not sure. Winning the tournament a couple of weeks ago, and after the

:21:50. > :21:53.experience she had, everyday, every tournament is a bonus after what

:21:54. > :21:57.happened with her career almost ending and the shock of what

:21:58. > :22:03.happened in that dreadful day. She might go out and be more relaxed. I

:22:04. > :22:09.think she is a slight favourite. Venus Williams is floating around,

:22:10. > :22:13.as well, so many that, on a day, they could win this, if they focus

:22:14. > :22:21.and believe. Anybody could win from the pack. Jelena Ostapenko, the way

:22:22. > :22:26.she won the French Open. She was good at Eastbourne, beaten by Jo

:22:27. > :22:30.Konta, a great day for her, also beating Angelique Kerber on the same

:22:31. > :22:35.day, but you get the feeling Ostapenko could move up a gear from

:22:36. > :22:39.that and will be dangerous. I think so, and I do not think she will

:22:40. > :22:44.have, after people win their first Grand Slam, all the stuff that comes

:22:45. > :22:48.to them after and do not have time to recharge and they have another

:22:49. > :22:52.Grand Slam coming and take months to adjust to winning a Grand Slam, I

:22:53. > :22:58.don't think she is that type of person. She will go out there, see

:22:59. > :23:01.the ball, hit it, go for winners. She is dangerous and I think she

:23:02. > :23:07.will enjoy playing here and it would not surprise me if she won it. It is

:23:08. > :23:12.hilarious, you came in and said where did you win your first

:23:13. > :23:16.tournament? I won my first tournament at Roland Garros! She was

:23:17. > :23:22.a former junior champion and it is amazing how they come back and prove

:23:23. > :23:29.themselves again. They do, and we have the young Canadian in the

:23:30. > :23:34.men's. Shapovalov. He has lost. It was a difficult draw. We met him at

:23:35. > :23:39.Queen's and he is a superstar in the making. If he had got a break in the

:23:40. > :23:46.draw here... He has a game built for grass. I miss that. I was looking

:23:47. > :23:52.forward to seeing him. I think he will win a Grand Slam. Obviously not

:23:53. > :23:58.here. But I think he is going to. We have so many young talented players

:23:59. > :24:02.coming up and superstars at the top, but they will be nudging them and

:24:03. > :24:09.trying to knock them off the throne as soon as possible. It is exciting,

:24:10. > :24:16.the next-generation players. There are exciting players coming through.

:24:17. > :24:21.Men's and women's. I was at the qualifying, doing TV, and you watch

:24:22. > :24:28.the standard of play, and you go wow, they are coming up. Men and

:24:29. > :24:31.women. Everybody believes now. They are fearless, the younger players.

:24:32. > :24:36.They believe they can take on the big guns and beat them. There will

:24:37. > :24:41.be nervous superstars looking over their shoulders the next year or

:24:42. > :24:45.two, because they are coming. So many dangerous players in the draw.

:24:46. > :24:54.Tommy Haas has been given a wildcard, which is great, 39 years

:24:55. > :25:02.of age. He beat Federer in Germany. How dare he? The impossible, beating

:25:03. > :25:06.Roger Federer on grass. You look at how old the players are, no

:25:07. > :25:12.disrespect to Tommy, late 30s, no problem. They manage their careers

:25:13. > :25:17.well. They have the diet, physio, training methods are so good. They

:25:18. > :25:22.believe they can go on till their late 30s, no problem, and it is

:25:23. > :25:28.great to see the experience. We have the youth coming in and the veterans

:25:29. > :25:32.will not go away too easily. Exciting times. Exciting because the

:25:33. > :25:38.good news is the players are making their way back onto Centre Court.

:25:39. > :25:44.Back to Centre Court and, hopefully... There he is. Sasha

:25:45. > :25:50.Bublik. Hilarious. He did interviews with Andy and Roger. He is a

:25:51. > :25:57.character, a precocious talent. Andy getting the job done, two sets up.

:25:58. > :26:03.2-0 up. Not moving probably as freely as we would like to see, but

:26:04. > :26:08.it is great to see him out there. Impact is, he was hobbling around

:26:09. > :26:13.between hitting the ball and sitting at the changeover and look down at

:26:14. > :26:17.times and it was worrying. If he gets through this match, there is

:26:18. > :26:23.not much doubt of that, sneaks through his second, I am sure by

:26:24. > :26:28.then he will be ready to go, but not ideal preparation. They have a three

:26:29. > :26:34.minute warm up. I will talk about Andy in a moment but the other news

:26:35. > :26:47.today, Andre Agassi is here with Novak Djokovic. He has added Mario

:26:48. > :26:52.Andretti. -- Ancic. He did not want to work with Boris any more. Marian

:26:53. > :26:59.Vajda, who had been with him so long. And then brings in Andre

:27:00. > :27:02.Agassi and Ancic. You can understand the team working. Agassi got back

:27:03. > :27:09.from the doldrums and got mentally right. They look happy together,

:27:10. > :27:15.that is good. We talked about Novak. It is the mind. His game, in a year,

:27:16. > :27:19.has not suddenly disintegrated. His forehand and backhand are not

:27:20. > :27:24.different. He is missing wall, because mentally he has lost

:27:25. > :27:30.something, maybe that fight. The French Open, he went away so badly

:27:31. > :27:34.in the third set, but a year ago as champion he would not allow that to

:27:35. > :27:40.happen. They have a lot of work to do to get his mind right. It is the

:27:41. > :27:45.belief. His game does not suddenly go away. Whether it was winning the

:27:46. > :27:50.French, completing all four Grand Slams, or suddenly he relaxed, who

:27:51. > :27:56.knows the reason, but it looks like he has mentally taken months.

:27:57. > :28:02.Agassi, he will get into his head and tell him, come on, you were

:28:03. > :28:06.champion, let's get back. You are better than these players. Get his

:28:07. > :28:12.mind right. That is what they have hired him for, not to change his

:28:13. > :28:15.game. Novak went to play at Eastbourne and met his first Eagles.

:28:16. > :28:20.He thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Andy, all the British

:28:21. > :28:26.fans want to get him through the first round and give him time to

:28:27. > :28:30.give the hip a chance. As I spoke to Boris and Andrew Castle, it is not

:28:31. > :28:38.ideal to have breaks in the matches where you go off because injuries

:28:39. > :28:44.cool down and get worse. Absolutely. He has not had a situation like this

:28:45. > :28:47.a while where he has had injury problems. He will want to get

:28:48. > :28:52.through the match and do the treatment and see how his body

:28:53. > :28:57.recovers, if he gets through this match, tomorrow, to see where the

:28:58. > :29:02.hip is. It is not just the scoreline, which he is willing

:29:03. > :29:08.comfortable, it is the pressure and nervous energy. See how he recovers

:29:09. > :29:13.24 hours later. Hopefully he will be OK. He saved three break points in

:29:14. > :29:17.the second set, just raised the level of his play. We worried about

:29:18. > :29:22.the number of matches coming into this, but you'd never forget how to

:29:23. > :29:29.win the big points. He is such a great champion. This is

:29:30. > :29:33.his best surface. A champion like that, he has got his problems, but

:29:34. > :29:37.look at the chap on the other side, playing against Andy Murray, number

:29:38. > :29:42.one in the world, I have somehow to beat him. It is difficult. As long

:29:43. > :29:47.as he manages his own side of the court, which he is doing well, his

:29:48. > :29:53.attitude seems good today, he looks fine. He walks onto Centre Court, as

:29:54. > :30:05.he says, and it makes you want to blame. You

:30:06. > :30:09.do not need to find motivation. It is his home, where he has made his

:30:10. > :30:12.name. That is what he is feeling. There is even Lendl. I like when he

:30:13. > :30:16.wears his glasses because you do not know what he is thinking. -- Ivan

:30:17. > :30:23.Lendl. Looking at the victories here. He was crying, Ivan Lendl.

:30:24. > :30:28.There is such a strong bond between these two. Andy had lost a lot of

:30:29. > :30:32.Grand Slam finals before he hooked up with Lendl and psychologically it

:30:33. > :30:37.was the thing. We talk about the mental game and that is what was

:30:38. > :30:43.missing. Ivan Lendl had been the same way, losing in finals before he

:30:44. > :30:51.won the French against Jo. And he took it all in and when he won his

:30:52. > :30:57.first Grand Slam, since then he has won too. I think he is going to have

:30:58. > :31:08.a great Wimbledon. We can rejoin Boris Becker and Andrew Castle.

:31:09. > :31:18.So, we have had our second delay on Centre Court. The first one 15

:31:19. > :32:02.minutes and the second one half an hour or so.

:32:03. > :32:26.A double fault is not that crucial. Having said that, 12 in two sets is.

:32:27. > :32:44.That was better. 11 aces for bootleg. -- Bublik. The defending

:32:45. > :32:50.champion always comes out and plays the first match at one o'clock on

:32:51. > :32:55.Centre Court. It is a great honour. Boris Becker you have had the honour

:32:56. > :33:05.of doing that on three occasions. You beat your opponent pretty easily

:33:06. > :33:09.that time. I was looking at the record for defending champions. 2003

:33:10. > :33:22.was the last time the defending champion lost.

:33:23. > :33:32.Before that, Santana lost in 1967. That is not many. The defending

:33:33. > :34:06.champion in control of this one. 2-1 up in the third set.

:34:07. > :34:41.He was hitting his hip afterwards out of frustration.

:34:42. > :34:52.UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:34:53. > :35:05.It just caught the edge. Only his second ace of the match. A

:35:06. > :35:07.champion's I, that is what it is called, Mr Bublik. You will get

:35:08. > :36:02.there one day, hopefully. I believe it is Andy Murray's right

:36:03. > :36:12.hip that is bothering him. I wonder if he is bothered with his serve, I

:36:13. > :37:18.think he might be holding back with the explosiveness.

:37:19. > :37:28.We have statistics for a lot of things but the amount of Paula

:37:29. > :37:35.forehand drop shots we do not have. -- poor forehand drop shots. You

:37:36. > :37:38.must play it in with the exact perfect weight and spin. Bublik has

:37:39. > :37:50.not done that in this match. UMPIRE: Challenging the call. The

:37:51. > :38:07.ball was called in. Mr Bublik has two challenges

:38:08. > :38:43.remaining. The reaction of Andy Murray after

:38:44. > :39:43.that important ball. Wants to finish the match today quickly.

:39:44. > :40:00.Bublik Shaw has a big first serve. 13 aces. Make that 14.

:40:01. > :40:07.Andy Murray still in control of this match will do they have had two rain

:40:08. > :40:15.delays here. The first match on Centre Court in 2017. Roger Federer

:40:16. > :40:24.is many peoples favourite for this event and why not? He has won 157

:40:25. > :40:27.grass court matches in his career. In second place, the man in your

:40:28. > :40:47.picture, Andy Murray. Obviously, when Andy was 15, he went

:40:48. > :40:55.to Barcelona to learn his craft. I am told that grass is his best

:40:56. > :41:08.surface. It is his most successful one. He has won Wimbledon twice. Got

:41:09. > :41:38.an Olympic gold and one Queen's Club five times.

:41:39. > :42:15.It is a dangerous business coming in on the backhand side. Gives a chance

:42:16. > :42:48.to get back. Is it my eyesight or is the son

:42:49. > :43:21.sneaking through the clouds? Getting brighter.

:43:22. > :43:25.We spoke about the inconsistencies in the Bublik game. That was another

:43:26. > :43:50.example. He has done this before. You can

:43:51. > :44:02.tell. Certainly some concerns about Andy

:44:03. > :44:08.Murray and whether he could take to the court with his hip injury. We

:44:09. > :44:10.wondered if he was down on his service speed. We will illustrate

:44:11. > :44:45.that for you in a second. That was a lovely shot. Still the

:44:46. > :44:59.wrong shot to play. I am surprised Andy is still chasing these.

:45:00. > :45:33.34 unforced errors is a not. -- a lot.

:45:34. > :45:43.Do you think he spoke to his coach, his father, before hand? Saying, we

:45:44. > :45:56.will lay the ball in short but not so short it is a winner. There he is

:45:57. > :46:02.will stop every strategy as to be revised once the first set is over.

:46:03. > :46:10.If it was good, you keep it. If it was bad when you change it. Here we

:46:11. > :46:19.go. Andy married just making sure the ball had bounced twice before he

:46:20. > :46:28.touched the net, if he was going to touch the net. A lot of backspin on

:46:29. > :46:40.it. Bublik was going, did he touch the net? No. That is a devastating

:46:41. > :46:45.return. It did not look much but that was a 130 mile an hour serve

:46:46. > :46:53.and Murray knocked it back as if it were nothing. The game is virtually

:46:54. > :46:59.over. Is he down on his first serve speed a bit? Looking back to last

:47:00. > :47:03.year and the final where he lost to Milos Raonic. Into the second week

:47:04. > :47:12.and slightly warmer conditions with the adrenaline flowing. The average

:47:13. > :47:20.speed is 113 miles an hour. Only two and three quarters of a percent or

:47:21. > :47:26.so. I think we are onto something. The difference is not much but it

:47:27. > :47:33.adds up. Eventually, any opponent will read that and get them returned

:47:34. > :47:39.more often than not. And it was much first serve was always his weapon.

:47:40. > :47:58.It does make a difference. Relatively straightforward so far

:47:59. > :48:19.for Andy Murray, the defending champion. He serves for this match.

:48:20. > :48:25.Andy really feeling it now. He lets the arm there. A beautiful follow

:48:26. > :49:07.through on the ground strokes. UMPIRE: Mr Bublik is challenging the

:49:08. > :49:19.call. The ball was called in. He really went for the first match

:49:20. > :50:30.point. Two more to go. Mr Bublik is challenging the call.

:50:31. > :50:42.He knows that Andy Murray has won. Murray said this would be an

:50:43. > :50:51.interesting opponent. He certainly was. Not quite enough substance yet.

:50:52. > :50:58.Plenty of style from Andy Murray as he advances as defending champion.

:50:59. > :51:09.An hour and 44 minutes of play. Two lots of rain delay, one of half an

:51:10. > :51:14.hour, one of 45 minutes. He will be around for a while. Something in his

:51:15. > :51:21.game is well worth watching. Errors creeping in. The shots are an issue.

:51:22. > :51:25.We have seen enough from Andy Murray, knowing what he is capable

:51:26. > :51:31.of. What do you make of that performance? We were not sure at the

:51:32. > :51:39.beginning. We are much smarter now. I think he is fit enough. I think,

:51:40. > :51:50.as the match went on, mostly into the body, into his hip, excellent

:51:51. > :51:54.stuff. In her duties as patron of the all England lawn tennis club,

:51:55. > :51:58.she'll be here a lot I am sure over the next two weeks. She will have

:51:59. > :52:07.enjoyed that performance as Andy Murray makes his way. No doubt he

:52:08. > :52:11.will know that his second-round opponent is Dustin Brown of Germany.

:52:12. > :52:18.That would be an interesting contest. He has got some firepower.

:52:19. > :52:23.Two years ago he came through qualifying, one around and then beat

:52:24. > :52:34.SAR Nadal 6-4 in the fourth set. That is Dustin Brown, who is next

:52:35. > :52:39.for Andy Murray in the draw. Plenty more tennis here on Centre Court and

:52:40. > :52:51.around the grounds on day one of the Championships. Plenty of break point

:52:52. > :52:56.opportunities for Bublik. He has certainly enjoyed himself on the

:52:57. > :53:00.bigger stage. He did not take any of the break point. I think that was

:53:01. > :53:13.probably the most important game of the whole match. He was 15-40 down

:53:14. > :53:24.but Bublik did not convert. He took his first break points and went 3-1

:53:25. > :53:28.and never really looked back. Not a good percentage with the double

:53:29. > :53:34.faults. I like what I see with Bublik. He is talented and

:53:35. > :53:42.promising. Nice to see you again, Boris. We will catch up soon.

:53:43. > :53:47.Three-time champion Boris and two time champion Andy Murray trying to

:53:48. > :53:52.make it number three. Straightforward in the end, an hour

:53:53. > :53:59.and 44 minutes. Andy Murray is talking to Lee McKenzie.

:54:00. > :54:05.A relief for many to see you at Wimbledon and safely through the

:54:06. > :54:11.first round. How you feeling? Pretty good. In the last few days, I was

:54:12. > :54:17.feeling better each day. Getting on the match court is different. The

:54:18. > :54:23.intensity is higher. The adrenaline and stuff, it's sort of helps numb

:54:24. > :54:32.some pain that you have. I moved well today. Yes. I thought I did

:54:33. > :54:37.pretty well for the first match. It was three sets. I'm sure you were

:54:38. > :54:45.hoping for a quick outing. When you see the rain the last thing you want

:54:46. > :54:51.is another fault. I was not thinking too much about it. I felt pretty

:54:52. > :54:56.comfortable underfoot. Normally the court is a bit lush and can be

:54:57. > :55:00.slippery. I did not feel like I was losing my footing at all. With the

:55:01. > :55:06.rain it was good we stopped when we did. The Centre Court was able to

:55:07. > :55:11.try and we got the covers on pretty quick. Sasha Bublik is a real

:55:12. > :55:16.character with a lot of potential. Not often you see a mid-match fist

:55:17. > :55:24.pump between competitors. Some good rallies. I don't see that often. I

:55:25. > :55:28.was chatting to him in the rain delay before we went back out,

:55:29. > :55:33.chatting about Centre Court. We were talking a bit about the match as

:55:34. > :55:38.well, which is pretty rare. He is a bit of a character, different from a

:55:39. > :55:44.lot of the players. He tries different shots. I think the crowd

:55:45. > :55:49.enjoyed the way he plays. Also his personality. Such is the love of you

:55:50. > :55:53.at Wimbledon, the national press were even encouraging the British

:55:54. > :55:58.public to rub a photo of you yesterday to get their healing hands

:55:59. > :56:03.need to help you in your recovery. Before your match with Dustin Brown,

:56:04. > :56:08.what will your recovery be? Does the British public need to get involved

:56:09. > :56:13.in that? I will spend some time at my physio and get into the ice bath.

:56:14. > :56:18.Tomorrow I will have a light practice and work on a few things

:56:19. > :56:26.which could have been better. Dustin comes to the net a lot. Work on my

:56:27. > :56:31.passing shots and lobs and those sort of things. He is unorthodox but

:56:32. > :56:39.plays a bit more from the net than Sasha. The British public can stand

:56:40. > :56:43.down. We will be putting away those photos of Andy because it sounds

:56:44. > :56:47.like his physio has it under control. Obvious problem still with

:56:48. > :56:52.the hip injury. Was not moving as well as we have seen in the past.

:56:53. > :56:58.When you have an injury can write you need a quick match. He won

:56:59. > :57:04.against Sasha Bublik who I am sure we'll hear more from. Everyone

:57:05. > :57:08.delighted with the defending champion through to round two. The

:57:09. > :57:17.opening day of the Championships. After the two briefed -- brief rain

:57:18. > :57:23.delays, we are back out. A lot of big names still to come. We are

:57:24. > :57:31.obviously showing all the tennis on BBC One. There are many ways you can

:57:32. > :57:39.watch Wimbledon across the BBC. We have every crosscourt backhand, drop

:57:40. > :57:44.shot covered on the BBC. You can watch action from 15 courts live and

:57:45. > :57:48.uninterrupted on the website, I player and BBC Sport at your mobile,

:57:49. > :57:55.tablet, games console or connected TV. Press the red button and he will

:57:56. > :58:02.get coverage from up to six additional courts. -- you will get.

:58:03. > :58:09.Let's update you on a couple of matches before we go to number one

:58:10. > :58:16.Court. Elina Svitolina won the first set and she has just held serve in

:58:17. > :58:23.the second set and is 6-5 up against Ash Barty. That is on Court number

:58:24. > :58:27.three. On Court Two, Marin Cilic, another Grand Slam winner seeded

:58:28. > :58:32.seven, up against Philipp Kohlschreiber, who plays so well on

:58:33. > :58:37.the grass courts. Our featured match on the red button. We will keep you

:58:38. > :58:41.up to date with those matches as they progress. We're heading to

:58:42. > :58:48.number one Court. Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open for the tenth

:58:49. > :58:59.time, he is up against John Millman. It has not been great for Hsieh

:59:00. > :59:06.Su-wei at Wimbledon. He has not got past the fourth round since 2010.

:59:07. > :59:13.Zverev is ready and up against John Millman. -- Rafa at Wimbledon.

:59:14. > :59:27.John Millman has two options about his approach. He is playing the King

:59:28. > :59:33.of clay. He can think he will be better off.

:59:34. > :00:01.Or will he think of this is the moment of my life.

:00:02. > :00:44.That was a well constructive point. Ended up hitting the volley.

:00:45. > :00:51.2day the ball keeping lower couple of times a day that's why some

:00:52. > :00:52.people saying that can be vulnerable in the first week of Wimbledon. Very

:00:53. > :01:36.much so. When we sit here and try to work out

:01:37. > :01:38.how Millman can have an impact in this match, we struggle to see where

:01:39. > :02:02.the weapons are going to come from. A couple of errors on the forehand

:02:03. > :02:14.which Millman will not be happy about. We suspect he will have to be

:02:15. > :02:18.consumed by positive thoughts, and if that is to be so, it will be the

:02:19. > :02:32.figures about Rafa Nadal's recent defeats here at Wimbledon, 2012,

:02:33. > :02:40.2013, 2014 and 2015, losing to players below 100 in the world. So

:02:41. > :02:46.get your money on that China I hope he's been reading the same notes as

:02:47. > :02:50.you! But again, when you haven't got a big weapon to really put Nadal

:02:51. > :03:00.under pressure, you feel like you've got to find some rid of your own. --

:03:01. > :03:01.some rhythm. It is difficult to see how Millman can keep the points

:03:02. > :03:44.short. JOHN INVERDALE: Like a batsman off

:03:45. > :04:00.the mark, that will be a source of immense relief to Millman.

:04:01. > :04:10.TIM HENMAN: I think the relief for a batsman is getting a run on the

:04:11. > :04:21.board. The relief for Millman will be when he gets a game on the board.

:04:22. > :04:39.A deft volley and then a very positive one to win the point. We

:04:40. > :04:44.all know about Rafa's strength at the back of the court, but actually,

:04:45. > :04:46.he's dot good feel at the net. If he can finish a point at the net on

:04:47. > :05:27.grass, that's a positive sign. Pretty conclusive first couple of

:05:28. > :05:28.games from Rafa. I suppose more to the point, Millman is not actually

:05:29. > :06:07.in the match yet. To keep the cricketing analogy, Rafa

:06:08. > :06:26.reaches his half-century with this match. This is his 50th game, going

:06:27. > :06:32.back to 2003. There's quite a few self-inflicted wounds from Millman

:06:33. > :07:27.at the moment. He's played and missed a couple of times.

:07:28. > :07:34.After all his heroics in Paris, Rafa decided not to play at Queen's,

:07:35. > :07:43.having initially entered there. So he has not had any actual match

:07:44. > :07:45.practice on grass this year. This might be the perfect way to play

:07:46. > :08:55.himself in. Tremendous rally! The slice on the

:08:56. > :09:02.ball initially from Nadal, and then, Millman keeping the ball so low.

:09:03. > :09:08.Rhydian to defence from Millman, because Rafa Nadal absolutely

:09:09. > :09:34.crushed that shot into the corner. He did well to stay with it.

:09:35. > :09:51.Great hands. Not an easy shot here, but Rafa has got soft hands for a

:09:52. > :10:49.guy that's got so much power. You could see Millman's reaction

:10:50. > :10:52.after that point, a big fist pump this early in the match, I think he

:10:53. > :11:03.realises the importance of getting his side of the scoreboard is

:11:04. > :11:07.working. And that shot, we ought to say, from behind Nadal, that's the

:11:08. > :11:31.new Vista of number one court. And we probably should add, the

:11:32. > :11:36.ever-changing vista. I'm sure we will have time to discuss the

:11:37. > :11:40.current state of number one court, and where we're going in the next

:11:41. > :11:50.couple of years. Tim personally is managing the whole project! Easily!

:11:51. > :12:07.Great shot! Again, good use of the slice from

:12:08. > :12:22.Rafa, but Millman was able to find the outside of the line.

:12:23. > :12:47.And? Clock in the morning in Brisbane, or whatever time it is,

:12:48. > :12:53.they will be pleased, because their man is in the game. To talk about

:12:54. > :12:58.the weaknesses of Nadal is almost absurd, but if you do keep plugging

:12:59. > :13:01.away at his backhand, because he tries to run around it so much, is

:13:02. > :13:07.that do you think the main objective? It's certainly the wing

:13:08. > :13:12.you're going to attack, because his forehand is one of the great shot is

:13:13. > :13:17.in the history of tennis. If you look at Rafa, he is right-handed

:13:18. > :13:23.fundamentally in everything else he does. So playing that shot, as a

:13:24. > :13:28.lefty, your right hand plays an enormous part in the that's where he

:13:29. > :13:31.is strong. For me, his backhand has improved an awful lot in the last

:13:32. > :13:34.six months, he seems to be more aggressive, taking it earlier,

:13:35. > :13:40.looking to drive the backhand crosscourt to then open up his

:13:41. > :13:43.forehand. I don't necessarily say it's a weakness, but it's not as

:13:44. > :13:57.strong as his forehand. So, Rafa comes bounding out for this

:13:58. > :14:02.fourth game, his second service game of this match, and for the first

:14:03. > :14:10.time in this match, the sun is out on Court No. 1. And it feels even

:14:11. > :14:17.brighter as a consequence of all the roof work that's happening above us.

:14:18. > :14:33.It feels more like Roland Garros or US Open.

:14:34. > :14:44.Certainly, with the construction going on, and the roof almost taken

:14:45. > :14:48.off at this phase, it can be a bit windy. You can almost hear it on the

:14:49. > :16:33.microphones, the wind whistling around.

:16:34. > :17:00.Pretty fierce hitting off the forehand wing from Nadal there.

:17:01. > :17:14.Pretty straightforward hold for the Spaniard. Tim, most people watching,

:17:15. > :17:21.wherever they may be, might say, a tennis court is a tennis court. The

:17:22. > :17:25.dimensions are the same. Why is Nadal's game so suited to clay, and

:17:26. > :17:47.less suited to the other surfaces? Really, in a nutshell, way he hits

:17:48. > :17:53.the ball, technique which creates so much spin. On a clay court, got more

:17:54. > :17:57.time to motherboard has not come off the court so quickly, but it bounces

:17:58. > :18:04.higher, and he's able to generate so much racket head speed to make the

:18:05. > :18:06.ball jump off the court. When you're playing against that on a

:18:07. > :18:10.clay-court, because you don't always get even bounce, you are unable to

:18:11. > :18:15.take the ball so only. That means you have to play Schurrle further

:18:16. > :18:20.behind the baseline, and that opens up the angles, and when he can hit

:18:21. > :18:24.with so much spin, he can take you so far off the court, and it's the

:18:25. > :18:42.surface he was born and bred on, his movement is exceptional.

:18:43. > :19:02.And the reality is that that game style, when you hit the ball that

:19:03. > :20:13.aggressively, it's going to work on any surface.

:20:14. > :20:24.I think Millman would like us to blame that one on the wind, up 30-0

:20:25. > :20:25.on your serve early on in the match, it's so important that you don't

:20:26. > :20:48.make unforced errors. Well, a which variety of shots from

:20:49. > :20:58.Nadal, but Millman really the architect of his own downfall. And

:20:59. > :21:04.Rafa, in complete control. Millman did very well to hold his previous

:21:05. > :21:11.service game, when he was down 0-40. But there, up 30-0, we really needed

:21:12. > :21:15.to keep the aggressive, consistent play, a couple of unforced errors.

:21:16. > :21:22.We have seen a couple of drop-volley is from Nadal. It is a shot that he

:21:23. > :21:26.can use well on grass. Because he hits the ball so hard, your opponent

:21:27. > :21:33.can be pushed further and further behind the baseline. With this grass

:21:34. > :21:37.court still relatively new, a bit of moisture in the grass, the ball is

:21:38. > :21:40.not bouncing quite so high not as to change direction, it opens up the

:21:41. > :21:52.front of the court. Well, that's a splendid sight on the

:21:53. > :21:57.opening day of this year's Tampax. We are the court at the far end,

:21:58. > :22:00.which has an open roof at the moment, but it will look very

:22:01. > :22:08.different in a couple of years, when if we do get rain, we will be able

:22:09. > :22:13.to play on under this smart new roof of Court No. 1. But for the moment,

:22:14. > :22:45.it's not going to rain anyway. It's a waste of money!

:22:46. > :22:59.Rafa was really cross about that, you could see. But well played,

:23:00. > :23:03.Millman. And again, that's where you saw Rafa moving forward, it wasn't

:23:04. > :23:08.so easy to change direction, and that's definitely the case on the

:23:09. > :23:12.first couple of days. This court has not had any practice on, so it's at

:23:13. > :23:37.its most Millman. -- at its most lush. I was going to

:23:38. > :23:42.say to you at the change of ends - at what point, if you are in

:23:43. > :23:45.Millman's position, do you say, this set has gone, I will just have a

:23:46. > :23:59.swing now? But here he is now at 0-30 on Rafa's serve. Maybe that's

:24:00. > :24:06.what he did? I think, from Millman's point of view right now, he's got to

:24:07. > :24:11.fight 100% for every point. He's still trying to establish his game,

:24:12. > :24:26.find his rhythm. See if he can have an impact - in ANY area. We were

:24:27. > :24:32.saying it was Rafa's 50th match at Wimbledon - this is his 50th match

:24:33. > :24:39.of the year. And Millman, not even into double figures yet. So he is so

:24:40. > :24:48.lacking in match practice, it's not true, after a lengthy hip injury.

:24:49. > :24:54.And we were talking so much about Andy Murray's hip in the build-up to

:24:55. > :24:58.this year's tournament, but the hip injury is the scourge of the tennis

:24:59. > :25:03.player, as rotation and movement is so fundamental. I think it is also

:25:04. > :25:08.an injury which has become more common because the game is played

:25:09. > :25:09.more open stance, sliding, facing the net, putting much more stress on

:25:10. > :25:24.the hips and groin. Pretty average second serve here

:25:25. > :25:28.from Rafa, straight into the hit zone for the Millman forehand, but

:25:29. > :25:50.certainly, well executed. Is Rafa playing quite quickly, do

:25:51. > :26:25.you get that impression? Obviously, the time between points

:26:26. > :26:29.tends to extend when the pressure is on and the end of the match is

:26:30. > :26:51.getting close, but at the moment, Rafa seems to be a man in a hurry.

:26:52. > :27:31.And from nowhere, Millman has a break point.

:27:32. > :27:39.Playing against a lefty, you feel in the ad court, you've got to try and

:27:40. > :28:37.cover that one out wide. Well, a glimmer of hope there the

:28:38. > :28:40.Millman, but only a glimmer. And he now has two serve to stay in this

:28:41. > :29:40.opening set. There have been several unforced

:29:41. > :29:43.errors already in this match from Millman and a couple of double

:29:44. > :30:23.faults don't help his cause. Well, it was brilliantly worked all

:30:24. > :30:29.the way through from Nadal until that last shot. There was one sliced

:30:30. > :30:34.backhand there, and you can't imagine how many revolutions per

:30:35. > :30:36.second that ball was spinning at. We had the most magnificent view of it,

:30:37. > :31:24.and it was extraordinary. TIM HENMAN: Rafa is capable of

:31:25. > :31:30.putting so much spin on the ball both ways. As you say, on the slice,

:31:31. > :31:32.he really does cut underneath the ball to get that excessive backspin

:31:33. > :31:56.on it. That's the way to do it. Very

:31:57. > :32:16.emphatic opening set of Wimbledon 2017 from Rafael Nadal.

:32:17. > :32:32.SUE BARKER: This was out on Court 17. You can see that Denis Istomin

:32:33. > :32:40.looked as if he had injured himself. In the end he got the trainer on

:32:41. > :32:46.court and was forced to pull out. Donald Young was 2-1 up and a break

:32:47. > :32:48.of serve up, but Denis Istomin was forced to withdraw from the

:32:49. > :32:54.championships because of a knee injury. Donald Young will go through

:32:55. > :32:59.to face the winner of the game between Rafael Nadal and John

:33:00. > :33:03.Millman. Good news as on Centre court Andy Murray won his opener.

:33:04. > :33:09.There was also lots of talk about whether he would be able to play and

:33:10. > :33:13.how bad his hip injury was. But he got the job done in straight sets

:33:14. > :33:25.against the very talented and precocious Alexander Bublik. In the

:33:26. > :33:29.ladies Championships the five times winner Venus Williams seeded ten at

:33:30. > :33:35.these championships went through in straight sets against a very

:33:36. > :33:41.difficult opponent from Belgium. She was pushed in both sets, but she

:33:42. > :33:53.eventually triumphed in both sets, 7-6, 6-4. What a way to finish.

:33:54. > :33:56.Venus Williams round to around -- through to round two. Elina

:33:57. > :34:03.Svitolina came through against a very entertaining player, Ash Barty,

:34:04. > :34:08.winning in this second set tie-break. The tennis was absolutely

:34:09. > :34:14.superb from both players. That is what it means to the number four

:34:15. > :34:19.seed. She knew what a difficult opponent she faced today. Ash Barty

:34:20. > :34:23.had reached the final at Edgbaston. She is through in straight sets and

:34:24. > :34:29.her impressive year continues. Over on BBC Two on centre court Petra

:34:30. > :34:35.Kvitova is coming back from an horrific stabbing from an intruder

:34:36. > :34:44.in December. She only played at the French Open and at Edgbaston. She

:34:45. > :34:51.has broken back in the first set against Johanna Larsson. That match

:34:52. > :34:55.is on BBC Two. On Court number two is Marin Cilic. He has taken the

:34:56. > :35:01.first set from Philippe Kohlschreiber. He is very difficult

:35:02. > :35:06.to be on grass. That is also available on the red button. That is

:35:07. > :36:00.what is happening elsewhere. Back we go to court number one.

:36:01. > :36:08.What you know with John Millman is he is always going to try his best.

:36:09. > :36:32.He is a gutsy competitor and he gets the most out of his game.

:36:33. > :36:41.JOHN INVERDALE: Rafa is a colossus in the tennis world, the sporting

:36:42. > :36:46.world. It is hard to remember a time when he was not playing. The current

:36:47. > :36:53.crop of players, it is hard to imagine an era, it almost feels as

:36:54. > :36:58.if they must have played against Rod Labour because they have been around

:36:59. > :37:05.for so long. Rafa played his first Wimbledon 14 years ago in 2003 and

:37:06. > :37:11.Britain's Lee Childs gave him a hard match. Rafa was 11 years old, wasn't

:37:12. > :37:37.he?! He then lost to a tidy player in the

:37:38. > :37:46.third round. That was his first foray into Wimbledon. Federer is 35

:37:47. > :37:52.and Rafael Nadal is 31 and he is much more part of Andy Murray and

:37:53. > :37:55.Novak Djokovic's age. Roger Federer won that year when Rafael Nadal

:37:56. > :38:12.played for the first time. And here is another Aussie coming

:38:13. > :38:28.off second best at the moment, John Millman. When you reflect on the

:38:29. > :38:29.results of 2017 it feels like the clock has been turned back five

:38:30. > :38:30.years. You had that period of dominance with Federer and Nadal and

:38:31. > :38:33.then you moved to Djokovic and Murray getting through to the last

:38:34. > :38:37.three last year. But it is amazing how well those two have played and

:38:38. > :38:44.performed this year in the biggest events. Millman was talking to the

:38:45. > :38:56.umpire at the last change of ends about something. Someone has brought

:38:57. > :39:02.on an Elastoplast or whatever it might be. You are no at home if you

:39:03. > :39:07.play tennis. A blister on your racket hand is not helpful in a

:39:08. > :39:12.match. You get blisters in other places like your feet and you can

:39:13. > :39:17.take them. But in the palm of your hand with the sweat and the grip, it

:39:18. > :39:25.is very difficult to sustain, especially in the middle of a match.

:39:26. > :39:46.It would have been nice to see the hawk-eyed view there, but you

:39:47. > :39:56.smashed the TV before we started, John! Not in anger I hasten to add.

:39:57. > :40:07.As this is a public forum I would just like to correct that for the

:40:08. > :40:11.record. Broke it, not smashed it. Tim said, I cannot see the TV

:40:12. > :40:18.screen, could you move the stats screen in front of it. I said, of

:40:19. > :40:20.course, then I dropped it. That is what happened. It was fair enough

:40:21. > :40:37.what I said. John Millman would not mind a few

:40:38. > :40:47.more games like that. And more with the crowd. They want to see a

:40:48. > :40:55.contest and they also want to see a lot of Rafa. For a lot of people it

:40:56. > :40:58.is perhaps the one visit to Wimbledon, maybe ever, and they get

:40:59. > :41:01.to see one of the greatest players of all time and they do not want to

:41:02. > :41:35.see him here in an hour and a half. That was a great shot. You heard

:41:36. > :41:37.John Millman say too good. In fact he almost said Toogood before Nadal

:41:38. > :42:46.had hit it. Millman would like Nadal to miss a

:42:47. > :43:25.couple of more like that. Asus three and four of the match so

:43:26. > :43:52.far. We do not think about Rafael Nadal

:43:53. > :44:03.as a serve of Asus like we do with other people. In the league table,

:44:04. > :44:09.where does he say? On the serve a long way down. There are a whole

:44:10. > :44:14.host of people who would serve better, but it is about the one, two

:44:15. > :44:22.punch, especially being a left-hander. He is swinging it out

:44:23. > :44:25.wide to the right-hander and if they have got a two-handed backhand, that

:44:26. > :44:42.is where they are susceptible to the reach. He is serving 66% first

:44:43. > :44:49.serves, which is quite good. In this draw there are probably 20 or 30

:44:50. > :44:56.guys who serve better than him, but the combination of serve and first

:44:57. > :45:01.forehand is good. There is a lot of debate going on here. I am not quite

:45:02. > :45:16.sure what about. Rafa is having his say. Millman was looking bemused.

:45:17. > :45:27.The umpire's microphone is switched off so we cannot hear what is going

:45:28. > :45:38.on. Any guesses? I am wondering whether they forgot the ball change

:45:39. > :45:42.but I do not think they did. If they forgot the ball change, would it

:45:43. > :45:46.require a meeting of the UN like this? I wonder if he has got a

:45:47. > :45:58.blister that he has got some blood on the balls. A trainer came onto

:45:59. > :46:04.the court and then went off. And we are none the wiser. If we are

:46:05. > :46:11.brutally honest, we have not got a clue. But we will work on it. We

:46:12. > :46:17.will try and find the answer. There was a very polite meeting and then

:46:18. > :46:28.everyone ran off. Meanwhile, back at the game... Nadal is still talking

:46:29. > :46:38.about something. We are a ball person short at Rafa's end.

:46:39. > :46:50.Rafa will want his towel at both sides!

:46:51. > :46:55.So now the ball girl has gone to the other side, but Rafa did not ask for

:46:56. > :47:15.his towel. Perhaps not the most conclusive of

:47:16. > :47:21.volleys, but it did the job in the end. I am just hearing that one of

:47:22. > :47:26.the ball boys is being treated by a trainer at the side of the court,

:47:27. > :47:37.but I cannot tell you any more than that.

:47:38. > :48:04.Millman was utterly stranded there. Which way shall I go?

:48:05. > :48:37.Those ground shots that Millman hit there, is that the kind of position

:48:38. > :48:43.that you, for example, would have gone in behind? The reason why that

:48:44. > :48:44.was effective is because he got a defensive reply and he was hitting

:48:45. > :48:45.the short title on the baseline. When he gets pushed five or six feet

:48:46. > :48:46.behind the baseline, that is when he is going to be less effective. To

:48:47. > :49:32.take the ball early against Nadal is going to be very difficult.

:49:33. > :49:43.Oh, what a winner from a great angle from Millman and then Nadal was all

:49:44. > :49:44.over it! And just look how immaculately he plays this shot

:49:45. > :49:59.here. 4000 revolutions a minute that ball

:50:00. > :50:09.was going at. It was just brilliant. The ball boy

:50:10. > :50:38.is backed by the way. That must be a contender for the

:50:39. > :50:49.longest rally at Wimbledon so far I think.

:50:50. > :50:52.34 shots of quality hitting and to finish with a winner like that down

:50:53. > :51:19.the line, impressive science. He is vulnerable in the first week

:51:20. > :52:25.of some tournaments. At 0- 13 Millman might have fancied

:52:26. > :52:58.his chances. Against the big players games can

:52:59. > :53:02.just slip away from you very quickly. Especially on a grass court

:53:03. > :53:38.and only a half a chance. But you do feel that at any point

:53:39. > :53:44.once it has got into its rhythm, you have to play twice against Rafael

:53:45. > :53:45.Nadal. Millman hit some great points there, but Rafael Nadal was still

:53:46. > :55:16.able to stay in the rally. Well, did not see that coming. A

:55:17. > :55:23.grunting rally from the two of them. There are a posse of Aussie fans

:55:24. > :55:27.encouraged by that. And all credit to Millman. You can see by his body

:55:28. > :55:33.language that he is fighting for every point, every shot. And he got

:55:34. > :55:39.his reward. Some great hitting from the back of the court. It was Nadal

:55:40. > :55:50.who ended up making the unforced error here, wide on the break point.

:55:51. > :56:00.He was just about to say something bad, but mercifully we cut away to

:56:01. > :56:04.the Aussie posse. And back on serve and you are kind of neutral again

:56:05. > :56:17.now. But he has to hold serve at 3-3. That is when you perhaps start

:56:18. > :56:29.thinking, will this guy go away, please? For me that is one of the

:56:30. > :56:34.areas where Nadal is so impressive. The way that he is able to put

:56:35. > :56:37.things behind him. He plays every point as it comes and he does not

:56:38. > :56:45.get frustrated with what has gone on before. That ability to deal with

:56:46. > :56:51.adversity. At this stage in the tournament dear against break, that

:56:52. > :57:24.will not upset him. He is relentless on every point.

:57:25. > :57:32.That is just the kind of error he does not want at this stage. That is

:57:33. > :57:37.right, he has got to win the point somehow. He has hit the first serves

:57:38. > :57:46.and has got the short ball. He did not do enough with the approach. A

:57:47. > :57:55.missed return and suddenly you are thinking 40-0. He has to work hard.

:57:56. > :57:59.It is those small margins that mount up between the two players. Do you

:58:00. > :58:15.think of it in those terms? Because now we are back at 30-30.

:58:16. > :58:22.Players always talk about playing every point. There is the scoreboard

:58:23. > :58:26.pressure and those first two point of every game I very important and

:58:27. > :58:29.you have an opportunity to dominate the point. He would have felt he

:58:30. > :58:35.should have won the second point in this game. The second serve and

:58:36. > :59:00.30-30 is a different complexion. And suddenly it exactly the scenario

:59:01. > :59:01.that you are describing. Leyton Hewitt on the right and Jason

:59:02. > :59:21.Stoltenberg on the left. Well, Millman bangs the ball into

:59:22. > :59:37.the ground. That was a game he felt he should have won. As it is Nadal

:59:38. > :59:39.is very much in control now. Is Leyton Hewitt still the Aussie Davis

:59:40. > :59:48.Cup captain? He certainly is. He has a semifinal tie coming up. Nick

:59:49. > :00:38.Kyrgios pulling out today. He would not have been pleased to see that.

:00:39. > :00:52.I'm sure Millman, when he hit that backhand, thought, that's a good

:00:53. > :00:58.shot. And then when it came back maybe not such a good shot after

:00:59. > :01:03.all! When the scoreboard is like this, you get the chance to try

:01:04. > :01:07.these shots, and when it comes off like that, it increases your

:01:08. > :01:27.confidence - if that's possible, in Rafa's case.

:01:28. > :01:43.Oh, the angle of that! We talked about the angles that Nadal is able

:01:44. > :02:30.to get on a clay court. On a grass court, that's pretty impressive.

:02:31. > :02:38.Well, he won't he is thinking about it yet, but he could possibly afford

:02:39. > :02:41.just a moment figures into the future, and wonder about playing

:02:42. > :02:48.either Donald John MacKay or Denis Istomin in the next round. In the

:02:49. > :03:00.quarterfinals, it could be Marin Cilic, who was the favourite before

:03:01. > :03:04.the tournament started. This man in your picture is striking the ball...

:03:05. > :03:08.For a guy who hasn't played a proper match on grass this year, he'll be

:03:09. > :03:11.pretty happy with the way things are going at the moment.

:03:12. > :03:15.TIM HENMAN: Very much so. You touched upon some of the results

:03:16. > :03:21.Rafa has had here in the last three or four years, and he's come unstuck

:03:22. > :03:26.against some tricky players - Lukas Rosol, Dustin Brown, Steve Darcis,

:03:27. > :03:30.real shot makers. But today against Millman, it gives in the opportunity

:03:31. > :03:34.to get that with, and with the confidence of his results in the

:03:35. > :03:37.past six months, he will feel very good at this stage of where his game

:03:38. > :03:43.is at. JOHN INVERDALE: Uncle Toni on the

:03:44. > :03:47.left there. We talk about him all the time in the context of Rafa. At

:03:48. > :03:57.a time when Djokovic is now linking up with Agassi, and we keep talking

:03:58. > :04:00.about the relationship between the top players and their backroom

:04:01. > :04:08.staff, that continuity has been a key element in Nadal's success. It

:04:09. > :04:12.certainly has, and it's horses for courses. Some people like that

:04:13. > :04:16.continuity - I worked with just three coaches in my professional

:04:17. > :04:23.career. I think the continuity with Uncle Toni is going to continue.

:04:24. > :04:28.Carlos Moya coming on board, starting at the beginning of the

:04:29. > :04:33.year, and there is probably nobody outside the team who knows Nadal's

:04:34. > :04:37.game better than Carlos Moya. Both brought up in Majorca, activist many

:04:38. > :04:42.times when Carlos Moya was a professional player. -- practised

:04:43. > :05:03.many times. Well, Millman was a bit of a sitting

:05:04. > :05:08.duck there. But you've still got to make the shot. It was a great pass

:05:09. > :05:10.from Nadal, but Millman again had the opportunity with the approach

:05:11. > :06:37.shot - just not quite doing enough. UMPIRE: Game, Millman.

:06:38. > :06:46.JOHN INVERDALE: I'm not sure his body position was exactly right for

:06:47. > :06:55.that shot! And again, I think we're going to have to blame the swirling

:06:56. > :07:01.wind! Out on Court No. 1, without the total coverage of the roof.

:07:02. > :07:10.Well, he's made Rafa serve out this second set. And Millman has broken

:07:11. > :07:12.him once already this set. And he's wiped down in front of our

:07:13. > :08:16.commentary box, and he was slapping his thigh then, saying, come on!

:08:17. > :08:37.That was great hitting, until, after that pounding from Nadal, Millman...

:08:38. > :08:46.He's smiling. But he's secretly thinking, firstly, it could have

:08:47. > :08:49.been a lot worse. What are you supposed to do when Nadal is hitting

:08:50. > :08:54.it that well, from side to side to side to side? I think he will have

:08:55. > :09:51.been hoping the umpire might have counted him out!

:09:52. > :10:18.So, two set points for a presets to love lead. Rafael Nadal, king of

:10:19. > :10:22.clay, master of grass today. SUE BARKER: Rafa, very much in

:10:23. > :10:25.control of this match, losing just four games, following on from his

:10:26. > :10:30.impressive display at the French Open. We will be right back with

:10:31. > :10:34.this match in just a moment. On Centre Court earlier, the defending

:10:35. > :10:46.champion, Andy Murray, made a successful start to the defence of

:10:47. > :10:48.his title, defeating Alexander Bublik in a very entertaining match.

:10:49. > :10:54.Murray will have been delighted to get through that match in straight

:10:55. > :11:00.sets to give his hip injury a little bit more rest before he's back on

:11:01. > :11:09.court on Wednesday. And Vince Williams is also through, the number

:11:10. > :11:11.ten seed, out on Court No. 1, was up against a very tricky opponent,

:11:12. > :11:16.Elise Mertens of Belgium. And she was made to fight in both sets,

:11:17. > :11:22.coming through the first in a tie-break, winning the second 6-4.

:11:23. > :11:34.So, Venus Williams, semifinalist last year, is through.

:11:35. > :11:42.But the five-time champion is facing a wrongful death lawsuit following a

:11:43. > :11:46.car crash which she was involved in last month. After the match, she was

:11:47. > :11:49.asked in a press conference how she had been coping following the

:11:50. > :11:55.accident. Having gone through all the things you have, what mentally

:11:56. > :12:00.and physically effect it will have on you, when you're just trying to

:12:01. > :12:03.be a tennis player? Have no idea what tomorrow will bring, that's all

:12:04. > :12:10.I can say about it, that's what I've learned. I saw that you wrote on

:12:11. > :12:16.your Facebook some very heartfelt words about the - is there anything

:12:17. > :12:22.else that you would want to say about that? There are really no

:12:23. > :12:25.words to describe how devastating, and... Yeah, I'm completely

:12:26. > :12:52.speechless. I mean, I'm just... Before we take any further questions

:12:53. > :12:59.for Venus, I would ask you to respect her wishes on this. A very

:13:00. > :13:01.emotional Venus Williams, saying, devastated and heartbroken,

:13:02. > :13:06.following that car accident last month. Well, she will be back on

:13:07. > :13:10.court on Wednesday. Before we rejoin Rafael Nadal, I can take you around

:13:11. > :13:15.a few of the matches, starting on Centre Court. This match is

:13:16. > :13:22.currently on BBC Two, Petra Kvitova is a set and 3-2 up against her

:13:23. > :13:30.Swedish opponent. That is on Centre Court. Over on Court No. 3, Aljaz

:13:31. > :13:43.Bedene, in a first set tie-break against Ivo Karlovic. And it has

:13:44. > :13:51.gone the way of Karlovic. So, Aljaz Bedene up against it against the

:13:52. > :13:53.giant Croatian. And back we go no to Court No. 1, we've just missed one

:13:54. > :14:13.point. JOHN INVERDALE: That was a great

:14:14. > :15:22.shot. It just wasn't in! Oh! Well, you thought the lob was

:15:23. > :15:26.going to win it, but it wasn't quite hit well enough. Then you thought

:15:27. > :15:32.the smash would win it - and that was hit well enough. And then, that!

:15:33. > :16:02.That's good enough! You have just got to say, too good.

:16:03. > :16:09.TIM HENMAN: It seems that times that Rafa is returning the first serve

:16:10. > :16:26.better than the second. I know Rafa missed that, but the

:16:27. > :16:28.speed with which he got across the baseline to be in a position to hit

:16:29. > :16:59.that shot, it never ceases to amaze. That's ridiculous! That actually is

:17:00. > :17:04.ridiculous! You knew what he was going to do half a second before he

:17:05. > :17:08.hit it, but just look at this. The execution, this ball is coming

:17:09. > :17:10.pretty quick, and Nadal just chops across it. You can see when it

:17:11. > :17:49.bounces how much side spin is on it. Well, Nadal was goading Millman a

:17:50. > :17:51.bit there. So, we have a break point opportunity, right at the start of

:17:52. > :18:32.the set. An amazing array of stroke play from

:18:33. > :18:49.Nadal. And he's coasting out of the second round. -- coasting now to the

:18:50. > :18:54.second round. When we look at the Dell, where he is hitting his second

:18:55. > :18:57.shot in the rally, after the first serve he's really getting up onto

:18:58. > :19:01.the baseline, and then, when you see the width he's able to get with the

:19:02. > :19:07.forehand mainly, three quarters of his second shots of the rally with

:19:08. > :19:20.the forehand, and then he's able to go both ways. When you are trying to

:19:21. > :19:23.run down those shots, which are mainly forehands, you've got a lot

:19:24. > :21:10.of court to cover. Well, Millman has been here before,

:21:11. > :21:13.and Millman has shot the door emphatically on several previous

:21:14. > :21:19.occasions. Let's see what happens here.

:21:20. > :21:21.REFEREE: Warning, Mr Nadal. Well, it won't be the first that he gets at

:21:22. > :21:35.Wimbledon this year. And that's basically what Rafa

:21:36. > :21:40.thought of his time violation. And I think it was a correct call. Rafa

:21:41. > :21:44.had been trying to get a couple of extra balls from the ball kid, and

:21:45. > :21:49.generally taking a little bit too long between points. Just keep him

:21:50. > :22:00.on his toes, speed things up a little bit.

:22:01. > :22:11.Ace number five from Nadal. But it is so random, Tim? If we had a stop

:22:12. > :22:18.watch here, the variation in times between the points... That's almost

:22:19. > :22:59.brilliant. Good response again from 0-30. But

:23:00. > :23:03.you're only going to stop this when you put a shot clock at the back of

:23:04. > :23:06.the court, starts at 20 seconds, and counts down, and everybody knows

:23:07. > :23:15.where they are? That would make it much more easy to follow. And it

:23:16. > :23:23.would add to the drama. I'm not altogether against it, but I think

:23:24. > :23:29.it needs to be trialled. They're going to trial it in the American

:23:30. > :23:33.hard court season, but the problem is, it's going to be tested at a

:23:34. > :23:37.lower level, when you don't have the crowd watching. And I think one of

:23:38. > :23:43.the areas that will be difficult is when you've got a big crowd. Why

:23:44. > :23:49.does that make a difference? I think there can be crowd interference,

:23:50. > :23:59.when you've got a home player and a sort of enemy on the court, if you

:24:00. > :24:03.like. And also, I'm interested to see who will be policing it, because

:24:04. > :24:11.the umpire has got enough to manage as it is already. Well, it will

:24:12. > :24:18.almost be a fourth official, won't it, somebody in his ear telling him

:24:19. > :24:24.what's going on? When you say you're not altogether against it, does that

:24:25. > :24:32.mean you're not altogether in favour of it? I would definitely like to

:24:33. > :24:38.understand how it would work. For me, one thing that definitely needs

:24:39. > :24:43.to be changed is, 20 seconds in the slams is too quick. It's got to be

:24:44. > :24:47.consistent with the tour. 25 seconds is the right number for me in

:24:48. > :24:57.professional tennis - but it needs 25 seconds. Hawk-Eye's first

:24:58. > :24:59.involvement in this match, I think. Nadal doesn't seem to hope for,

:25:00. > :25:37.strolls to the other! Well, he's done it again. Millman

:25:38. > :25:44.had very few options once he got there anyway. Talk about Hawk-Eye,

:25:45. > :25:49.Hawk-Eye has been an absolutely fantastic addition to our sport,

:25:50. > :25:53.there's no doubt about it. Another area we can look at is when a match

:25:54. > :26:02.starts. Talk about a one o'clock match. Yeah, it was 12 minutes past

:26:03. > :26:10.before a ball was hit. I quite like it in other sports, Champions League

:26:11. > :26:16.final, or rugby international, when it says it is going to start at

:26:17. > :26:18.7.45, it starts at 7.45. That is not possible necessarily in all tennis

:26:19. > :26:41.matches unless it's the first match. Millman is challenging this one.

:26:42. > :26:46.Some lovely striking of the ball in that rally. We have had some really

:26:47. > :26:54.good rallies in this match, but Nadal has come off best in most of

:26:55. > :26:55.them. Unless you play the first match of the court, you don't know

:26:56. > :27:27.what time you're going to start. Get rid of the knock-up, John? In

:27:28. > :27:35.athletics, there is a warm up track. You warm up there, you come on here,

:27:36. > :27:46.you play. As there is in tennis. Millman throws the ball away in

:27:47. > :27:54.annoyance. You sense that he thinks it is all over now, with two breaks

:27:55. > :27:57.of serve. So, the tennis world, according to John Inverdale and Tim

:27:58. > :28:01.Henman, would get rid of the warm-up,, with five seconds with a

:28:02. > :28:09.shot clock. Yeah, and you also then enforce it. First time would be a

:28:10. > :28:13.warning, second time would be a point, third time is a game. Fourth

:28:14. > :28:20.time, you're thrown out of the tournament. Fifth time, you lose

:28:21. > :28:26.your passport! It's very simple! But the premise for doing all this is to

:28:27. > :28:32.make the game a better product for the widest possible constituency.

:28:33. > :28:37.That's where everyone's coming from, this is not some kind of Draconian

:28:38. > :28:42.penalties which people are seeking to impose just out of wilfulness.

:28:43. > :28:49.It's actually to make the product better. Absolutely. What about the

:28:50. > :28:58.break at the end of the set, when players popped off to have a change

:28:59. > :29:03.of clothing? Well, maybe you have to do that, but what you don't need to

:29:04. > :29:08.do is, in a tie-break, and at the end of the first game, to waste 30

:29:09. > :29:24.seconds having a glass of water. There are so many areas. Suddenly, a

:29:25. > :29:27.three and a half hour match becomes two hours 45 very quickly - and

:29:28. > :29:50.television would love that. And Rafa is definitely getting his

:29:51. > :32:05.skates on now. JOHN INVERDALE: Rafa at a rate of

:32:06. > :32:09.knots now. TIM HENMAN: You feel he is going through the gears, having

:32:10. > :32:14.had no grass court matches during this tournament. I think he will be

:32:15. > :32:15.happy with the way he has been able to go out and experiment with a few

:32:16. > :32:49.shots. Millman saw that one coming for

:32:50. > :33:03.once. I think Rafa got caught in five Mins there.

:33:04. > :33:08.One thing I have been impressed with with John Millman today is his

:33:09. > :33:14.attitude. He has never got down on himself. He has played hard for

:33:15. > :33:20.every point and every game that he has got on the scoreboard. It is not

:33:21. > :33:24.going to make any difference in the end result, but he has had the right

:33:25. > :33:44.attitude. Oh, it was in the hitting zone, but

:33:45. > :33:49.what a hit. It is quite easy when you don't care where it is going.

:33:50. > :34:12.Well played, John Millman. Talking about our debate about how

:34:13. > :34:23.long people are taking between points and how long each player is

:34:24. > :34:29.taking between points. It is an average of 23 seconds for Rafael

:34:30. > :34:40.Nadal. At the start of the game he was rushing and he was going from

:34:41. > :34:45.one side of the court to the other. Would you say that was fair enough?

:34:46. > :34:52.It is supposed to be 20 seconds. If the average is 23, is that fair

:34:53. > :34:57.enough? My honest answer is, yes, it is. But I think it is ludicrous in a

:34:58. > :35:03.grand slam that you are playing five sets and it has to be 20 seconds.

:35:04. > :35:09.The wording if it is a soft 20 seconds, but that does not make any

:35:10. > :35:14.sense either, you need clarity. If he is averaging 23, that is

:35:15. > :35:19.fantastic. The problem is when he starts averaging 28. That is when

:35:20. > :35:26.there will be a great area and the umpire will have to make judgment

:35:27. > :35:31.calls. The reason we are having this conversation is Rafa got a time

:35:32. > :36:08.violation. Uncle Toni is taking a selfie! I

:36:09. > :36:19.think he is looking up which restaurant to go to tonight.

:36:20. > :36:28.John Millman was not going to challenge that, but then his box

:36:29. > :36:41.told him to challenge it. They want this game to go on.

:36:42. > :37:34.That was not the greatest call from the Millman box.

:37:35. > :37:54.That was a great shot. And exhibition staff at the end.

:37:55. > :37:58.It might have been Millman's only chance if he had gone for the

:37:59. > :38:25.knockout! It is the right shot to be

:38:26. > :38:44.aggressive, going down the line, but he cannot afford to

:38:45. > :39:03.Rafa let that one go, thinking it was drifting wide, but it was not.

:39:04. > :39:20.I think it's just caught the back of the line. You are still in it, mate.

:39:21. > :39:27.I don't know if you could hear what he was saying there, Millman, but he

:39:28. > :39:56.was saying feet, feet. And Nadal's footwork there was

:39:57. > :39:59.perfect. Talk about staying on the Nadal backhand because you want to

:40:00. > :40:04.stay away from his forehand, but this is where he has really

:40:05. > :40:33.improved, flattening the ball out, good use of the right hand.

:40:34. > :41:09.I am not sure that is a great look. Oh!

:41:10. > :41:31.I should say as well that the gentleman who has got his hat

:41:32. > :41:38.halfway across his face, it is a really bright afternoon. The damage

:41:39. > :41:51.has been done. We had some rain earlier, but you are right.

:41:52. > :42:02.And the damage almost done here for John Millman. You kind of suspect

:42:03. > :42:19.that Nadal will be back in the locker room in ten minutes' time.

:42:20. > :42:43.And it may not have been the greatest contest, this, but for

:42:44. > :42:48.everyone who has been on the number one court, if it is the first time

:42:49. > :42:52.they have done it, they will go home and say, we have seen Rafael Nadal

:42:53. > :42:58.play and we saw him play two shots that were out of this world. It is

:42:59. > :43:02.great for this tournament to have Rafa. He has missed the tournament

:43:03. > :43:07.before through injury and has had some early losses, so the public

:43:08. > :43:12.have not seen him play a massive amount. But when he is in full flow

:43:13. > :43:16.like this, it is great for the game in general. He has looked

:43:17. > :43:21.comfortable out there, his first match on grass this season. His

:43:22. > :43:27.movement has been good, he has been aggressive from the baseline, his

:43:28. > :43:33.service has improved. 68% first serves in the match. He will be

:43:34. > :43:44.going for more. Early days, but a lot of positive signs. Number one

:43:45. > :43:48.court have had a good day to day already, Venus Williams winning in

:43:49. > :43:51.straight sets, but a very competitive match. We have got

:43:52. > :44:02.Johanna Konta coming up in a moment or so. Here they have had if not a

:44:03. > :44:07.masterclass, at least an exhibition. Ten times a winner of the French

:44:08. > :44:13.Open, twice a winner here at Wimbledon. The one and only Rafael

:44:14. > :44:36.Nadal. And again. And again. Two blistering

:44:37. > :45:37.winners back-to-back. And after an hour and three quarters

:45:38. > :45:38.in the Wimbledon sunshine on this opening day, Rafael Nadal has three

:45:39. > :46:12.match points. Finishing in style, he is out of

:46:13. > :46:23.here. He is into the second round. And that is Rafael Nadal, a man who

:46:24. > :46:36.is short of grass court tennis. Beware the rest.

:46:37. > :46:44.It really is impressive to watch Nadal on any surface, but to see him

:46:45. > :46:48.come back to Wimbledon, he looks so comfortable. Admittedly he was not

:46:49. > :46:53.put under pressure by his opponent, but when you look to the strength of

:46:54. > :46:58.his game, he is serving well, he is moving well and he looks fit and

:46:59. > :47:03.healthy. And as you saw in the last game, the power he has in his

:47:04. > :47:08.forehand. You are such a tease, Rafa! He has got a good time,

:47:09. > :47:28.though, you have to say. We will hear what Rafa had to say in

:47:29. > :47:33.a moment or so, but a final word about John Millman who is waiting to

:47:34. > :47:37.go off court alongside Rafa, rather than just packing his bags and

:47:38. > :47:42.leaving town. He is not playing in the doubles, but I suppose he may

:47:43. > :47:45.just hang around and pick up an opportunity to play in the mixed to

:47:46. > :47:53.keep his stay in London a bit longer. But this man has had so

:47:54. > :47:58.little play this year because of a hip injury, five months out of the

:47:59. > :48:06.game, he would have loved the experience of playing on this court

:48:07. > :48:12.and playing against Rafael Nadal. Great camaraderie between the two.

:48:13. > :48:25.And a great ovation as well. Nadal is such a popular figure. He has got

:48:26. > :48:28.a tennis court named after him in Barcelona. He has got an asteroid

:48:29. > :48:36.named after him somewhere in the sky. That smile tells you that

:48:37. > :48:46.Rafael Nadal is very happy to be back here at Wimbledon and into the

:48:47. > :48:50.second round. It was the ideal start. He was not under too much

:48:51. > :48:58.pressure from his opponent but they had some good baseline exchanges.

:48:59. > :49:08.But really dominant straight win. A lot of happy people with the Rafael

:49:09. > :49:13.Nadal autograph. And less than two hours. It was almost like an

:49:14. > :49:18.extended training session, a hard training session. When you watch

:49:19. > :49:24.Rafael Nadal train, you sometimes trains harder than when he is in a

:49:25. > :49:30.match situation. But either way, well done, John Millman. 40,000

:49:31. > :49:35.euros for the first round loser. Well done to Rafael Nadal. The last

:49:36. > :49:39.thing he is thinking about is what money is involved here. All he is

:49:40. > :49:45.thinking about is, could that be the first step towards grand slam try it

:49:46. > :49:52.number 60? He is talking to Rishi Persad.

:49:53. > :50:01.How well do you think you play? I do not know how well I played, but I

:50:02. > :50:04.have been here two years without playing on grass and I have a

:50:05. > :50:11.positive start and positive feelings and I am happy how I finished the

:50:12. > :50:14.match. You missed last year and you saw how popular you were out there,

:50:15. > :50:19.the crowd love you. How much does it mean to be back playing here at

:50:20. > :50:24.Wimbledon again? For all the players it is so special playing here. You

:50:25. > :50:34.can imagine the history I have had here, five finals in a row. So, very

:50:35. > :50:40.happy to be back. I give my thanks to the crowd for the support. For me

:50:41. > :50:45.it is always very special to play here and in London and Wimbledon I

:50:46. > :50:48.am happy to be here. Would you say that physically you are in the best

:50:49. > :50:55.shape you are in for an assault on the title? I do not know. I started

:50:56. > :51:03.the season playing good tennis since the beginning. It has been very

:51:04. > :51:08.special and very emotional and I am happy to compete well again on grass

:51:09. > :51:16.and I am prepared to play the next round. Well done today. Many thanks.

:51:17. > :51:20.SUE BARKER: We have so many wonderful champions at the top of

:51:21. > :51:34.the game and Rafa is one of the nicest. He raced through winning the

:51:35. > :51:38.French Open winning just that most of his games. The two times winner

:51:39. > :51:51.is looking ominously good out on Court number one. Rafa gets through

:51:52. > :51:55.in straight sets. But all the talk was about this man come into

:51:56. > :51:59.Wimbledon. There were doubts over his head injury and he was still

:52:00. > :52:04.limping in between points, but it did not hamper his movement too much

:52:05. > :52:14.today as he went through against the very talented Alexander Bublik in

:52:15. > :52:18.straight sets. Alexander took to social media and said, thank you to

:52:19. > :52:26.Andy, the best day of my life so far. That is wonderful. We will hear

:52:27. > :52:29.much more from him in the future. And Andy Murray goes through in

:52:30. > :52:35.straight sets to the delight of the Centre Court crowd. And after the

:52:36. > :52:43.match Andy spoke to Phil Jones. Well played. Is there a sense of

:52:44. > :52:49.extra pomp and ceremony when you are defending champion on day one on

:52:50. > :52:56.Centre court? Maybe there is a little bit extra nerves possibly.

:52:57. > :53:00.But it is not too different. Once you get out there and get through

:53:01. > :53:04.the first few games you settle down and you remember that you can play

:53:05. > :53:21.tennis. That is what you always do and you settle down pretty quickly.

:53:22. > :53:21.In your press conference there was an interesting comment about people

:53:22. > :53:24.perceiving things about you in your body language and people read more

:53:25. > :53:30.into things than there actually is. I was saying I do not know if I'd

:53:31. > :53:36.always sort of... I do not have the smoothest walk at the best of times.

:53:37. > :53:40.Because my hip has been sore and everybody is talking about it,

:53:41. > :53:45.everybody thinks I am hobbling on the court more, because my hip has

:53:46. > :53:50.been sought for a few weeks and maybe I have been limping a bit more

:53:51. > :53:57.and I do not realise it, but I have not been in pain when I have been

:53:58. > :54:06.walking. Dustin Brown is next. What kind of danger does he pose? He is a

:54:07. > :54:14.little bit similar to Alexander Bublik really. He goes for his

:54:15. > :54:20.shots. He has got really good hands, he volleys well and he serves well

:54:21. > :54:26.and he is quite big. He just takes it on. He does not leave to chance.

:54:27. > :54:33.Anything As his opponent you do not get to dictate the match. It is

:54:34. > :54:37.played on his terms. He is quick between the points. He is a fun guy

:54:38. > :54:44.to watch, but not easy to play against. It will be tough. He likes

:54:45. > :54:48.the grass courts. I am sure a lot of people will remember that he be Rafa

:54:49. > :54:53.here a few years ago and he is very dangerous. SUE BARKER: We do

:54:54. > :54:58.remember that, a very difficult opponent. And a message, Andy, we

:54:59. > :55:02.will be watching and analysing your walk over the next couple of days

:55:03. > :55:07.when you head to the practice course. It is a beautiful evening

:55:08. > :55:11.here and everybody is enjoying watching the tennis. We will be

:55:12. > :55:16.watching Johanna Konta next and she is making her way to Court number

:55:17. > :55:21.one and I am sure that is why Henman Hill is packed so they can watch

:55:22. > :55:26.Britain's number one make her way through to the next round. Venus

:55:27. > :55:33.Williams made it through against Elise Mertens of Belgium. She was

:55:34. > :55:37.tested in both sets. She certainly finished it off in style, one of the

:55:38. > :55:42.points of the match. Look at this. She means business. Venus Williams,

:55:43. > :55:49.five times the champion, safely through on Court number one earlier

:55:50. > :55:53.today. A smile from Venus, but it has been a very difficult time for

:55:54. > :55:58.her. She was involved in a car accident in Florida last month which

:55:59. > :56:03.led to the death of a 78-year-old man. A police investigation

:56:04. > :56:08.continues. She said on social media how heartbroken and devastated she

:56:09. > :56:11.was. She asked not to do any interviews until today when there

:56:12. > :56:15.was a very emotional press conference after her match.

:56:16. > :56:19.Having gone through all the things you have both mentally and

:56:20. > :56:27.physically that will help you deal with this situation when the largest

:56:28. > :56:35.trying to be a tennis player. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

:56:36. > :56:40.You wrote on Facebook some very heartfelt words. Is there anything

:56:41. > :56:48.else you want to say about that? There are really no words to

:56:49. > :56:51.describe how devastating and... Yes, I am completely speechless. It is

:56:52. > :57:11.just... I mean I am just... Before we take any further

:57:12. > :57:16.questions, please be aware she is unable to say anything more about

:57:17. > :57:22.this, so I would ask you to respect her wishes, please. It really puts

:57:23. > :57:27.the tennis results in perspective, a very difficult time for Venus

:57:28. > :57:32.Williams right now. But over on centre court another player has had

:57:33. > :57:38.a difficult time. Petra Kvitova coming back after she was stabbed by

:57:39. > :57:45.an intruder in her department -- palming in December. She won the

:57:46. > :57:49.French Open and the tournament at Edgbaston and she has made a fresh

:57:50. > :58:03.return to Centre court. The 11th seed through against you Larsen. --

:58:04. > :58:10.Johanna Larsson. After the match she spoke to us.

:58:11. > :58:14.Just your eighth match back after such a difficult year and you have

:58:15. > :58:22.gone back on to your favourite Court at Wimbledon and you have one, you

:58:23. > :58:31.must be delighted. I did and it was amazing. It was amazing to be back

:58:32. > :58:35.here at Wimbledon. It is the favourite Court of my career and it

:58:36. > :58:39.was amazing to win on it. After everything you have been to wear

:58:40. > :58:47.their times during the winter that you dated you would be able to get

:58:48. > :58:51.back onto Centre Court? Yes, I am very happy the dream came true and I

:58:52. > :58:57.was able to play here again. It was a tough first round. What pleased

:58:58. > :59:00.you with your performance today and what do you think you can still work

:59:01. > :59:10.on? You have only had eight matches now. Yes, it is training where you

:59:11. > :59:15.cannot really claim and you have to play as well as you can. I was

:59:16. > :59:19.nervous before today and that is why I started badly with my serve and I

:59:20. > :59:29.need to improve my first serve and some groundstrokes. You were out up

:59:30. > :59:38.preparation last week in the run up to Wimbledon, how fit do you feel?

:59:39. > :59:42.It was one of the things, I did not serve well today, but with practice

:59:43. > :59:48.I will get better and better. It is great to see you back.

:59:49. > :59:53.SUE BARKER: It is wonderful to see her back, one of the most popular on

:59:54. > :00:00.tour. The number two seed is to, Simona Halep. She reached the

:00:01. > :00:08.quarterfinals here last year and is safely through the opening round.

:00:09. > :00:15.Another seed safely through in straight sets, and this was a tricky

:00:16. > :00:20.one and a very entertaining match, on Court number three, Elina

:00:21. > :00:46.Svitolina beating Ash Barty. So, that's the ladies singles. In

:00:47. > :00:50.the men's, out on Court No. 2, Marin Cilic put out another tricky

:00:51. > :00:56.opponent, Philipp Kohlschreiber. He knows his way around a grass court

:00:57. > :01:06.as well. But he put him out in straight sets and he will face

:01:07. > :01:12.Florian Mayer in the next round. Marin Cilic, delighted to be through

:01:13. > :01:17.chairs is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one of the great entertainers. He put out

:01:18. > :01:21.the British wild card Cameron Norrie, who has gone to America to

:01:22. > :01:29.play in the college system and was the highest ranked player in college

:01:30. > :01:37.tennis in America, so a big future for him, I'm sure. No big

:01:38. > :01:53.celebration from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga! Nick Kyrgios, this was the sad scene

:01:54. > :02:02.at the end of the second set, he was trailing by two sets to love. It

:02:03. > :02:09.followed an injury kicked up -- picked up at Queen's Club a couple

:02:10. > :02:13.of weeks ago. You can see, a very emotional Nick Kyrgios, having to

:02:14. > :02:22.call it a day. Not the way you want to leave this tournament.

:02:23. > :02:31.Over on BBC Two at the moment, Aljaz Bedene, Britain's number three, is

:02:32. > :02:36.involved in a second set tie-break against the big server from Croatia

:02:37. > :02:44.in the car the, and he's 5-2 up in this one. He lost the opening set

:02:45. > :02:55.tie-break. Karlovic has 22 aces so far. At 6ft 10, he's known for that

:02:56. > :03:00.big serve. That's on BBC Two at the moment. And on the red button, our

:03:01. > :03:06.featured match is Heather Watson, who had fallen down the rankings but

:03:07. > :03:13.came back last week and got to the semifinals at Eastbourne, looks to

:03:14. > :03:24.be back to her best. That match is on the red button. We will keep you

:03:25. > :03:31.up-to-date. So, we have just a few more minutes here on BBC One before

:03:32. > :03:34.we switch over to BBC Two. We had a couple of rain delays earlier, that

:03:35. > :03:43.was unexpected. Coming up, we will be heading to Court No. 1 to see Jo

:03:44. > :03:49.Konta of Great Britain. There have been big questions, we seem to have

:03:50. > :03:53.been talking about lots of injuries, includingJo Konta following that

:03:54. > :03:56.horrendous fall that she had at Eastbourne. Russell Fuller went to

:03:57. > :04:05.ask her how she is doing in preparation for her opening match.

:04:06. > :04:10.Good to see you here, looking fit and healthy, how are you feeling

:04:11. > :04:18.after that horrible fall at Eastbourne? It was a little bit of a

:04:19. > :04:24.nasty fall. Watching it back, it doesn't look good! But the initial

:04:25. > :04:30.trauma of it on court was also magnified because of the shock of

:04:31. > :04:34.it. It definitely affected me for the following couple of days, I was

:04:35. > :04:37.not able to continue at Eastbourne. But in high and doing everything I

:04:38. > :04:45.can to recover well physically and mentally. You're playing this

:04:46. > :04:50.Taiwanese opponent in the first round, just as you did at Roland

:04:51. > :04:55.Garros, which is a bit bizarre? It is, I think it is exciting, but it

:04:56. > :05:00.is another great opportunity for me to play against her. She is very

:05:01. > :05:04.capable on this surface, she's a champion on doubles so she can

:05:05. > :05:08.definitely play on grass. Most importantly, I will be going in and

:05:09. > :05:13.preparing well and trying to stick to my game plan and most importantly

:05:14. > :05:18.enjoy being on Court No. 1. Andy Murray was saying, there are some

:05:19. > :05:23.drawbacks being a British player, at Wimbledon, with all of the attention

:05:24. > :05:27.- do you quite enjoy it or do you find it a distraction? I definitely

:05:28. > :05:34.think it is a good problem to have, it is a positive thing. Again, it is

:05:35. > :05:40.putting our sport on the map, and putting the women's side as well. So

:05:41. > :05:51.I think overall, it's a very exciting thing.

:05:52. > :05:57.Well, Jo Konta walks onto court just a few moments ago, she is up against

:05:58. > :06:02.the woman who defeated her at the French Open, a really tricky

:06:03. > :06:07.opponent. This is not going to be an easy match for Jo. We have still got

:06:08. > :06:11.a few minutes here on BBC One before we move over to BBC Two. Sit back

:06:12. > :06:16.and enjoy the start with Annabel Croft and Andrew Cotter. To label

:06:17. > :06:21.the rewards are many as you rise up the rankings and become one of the

:06:22. > :06:25.best in the world, which Jo Konta is now. But for a British tennis player

:06:26. > :06:30.at Wimbledon, that success brings Russia and expectation. Even with

:06:31. > :06:35.that fall at Eastbourne and withdraw from the semifinal, there is some

:06:36. > :06:38.excitement and expectation of a good run here for Jo Konta, but a tricky

:06:39. > :07:15.opponent here, from Taiwan. Annabel Croft alongside me already

:07:16. > :07:42.highlighted during the knock up the danger of the Hsieh Su-Wei backhand.

:07:43. > :07:51.Well, Hsieh Su-Wei is fully aware of how aggressive Jo Konta is off the

:07:52. > :07:54.return of serve. It's something she worked on incredibly hard in the

:07:55. > :08:08.off-season. She will be looking to stamp her authority on that return.

:08:09. > :08:19.A little bit untidy from Hsieh. ANNABEL CROFT: It was a ball which

:08:20. > :08:29.was easy to attack, she will be a bit disappointed with that.

:08:30. > :08:43.And that's a dodgy second serve, a few early nerves, I think. Two

:08:44. > :09:19.double faults and two break points for Johanna Konta.

:09:20. > :09:28.There will be nerves, too, of course, for Konta, with home

:09:29. > :09:33.pressure and being one of the favourites now.

:09:34. > :10:04.That's well played, though, by Hsieh.

:10:05. > :10:14.That's impressive from the Taiwanese player, two break points seen off.

:10:15. > :10:18.She's really deceptive as a tennis player, because she takes the ball

:10:19. > :10:22.incredibly early and strikes right through the centre of the ball,

:10:23. > :10:32.sometimes she can slice underneath it, and she creates a very good

:10:33. > :10:37.angle and creates pace as well. So, this is a very difficult, tricky

:10:38. > :10:48.opening match, this, for Johanna Konta. And they have met twice, and

:10:49. > :12:09.Konta has lost twice. The quality of the second serve that

:12:10. > :12:26.we've talked about. On -- good depth.

:12:27. > :12:34.Andrew Fitzpatrick, who's up in the support camp, the hitting partner,

:12:35. > :12:39.he has said that he has so much confidence in her serve, he really

:12:40. > :12:41.feels she can pick the spot she wants to hit and she can really nail

:12:42. > :12:55.it. Just too powerful in her first

:12:56. > :13:04.service game, and Johan Konta has her first game on the board.

:13:05. > :13:12.SUE BARKER: I did say that we would only be there briefly, because this

:13:13. > :13:15.match now continues over on BBC Two. If you want to continue watching Jo

:13:16. > :13:19.Konta in this very tricky opener against Hsieh Su-Wei, that now

:13:20. > :13:26.continues on BBC Two. The headlines today... Wins for Andy Murray, Venus

:13:27. > :13:30.Williams, Rafa Nadal and Petra Kvitova, all going through in

:13:31. > :13:33.straight sets. All the talk coming into today was about Andy Murray and

:13:34. > :13:38.his injury. Well, there was a limp in between points, but it didn't

:13:39. > :13:43.hamper him too much, and he has made a winning start to the defence of

:13:44. > :13:48.his title. So now, we wait to see if Britain's number one woman, Jo

:13:49. > :13:52.Konta, and follow suit, because just like Murray, she is a contender for

:13:53. > :13:55.the title. Hope you enjoyed the tennis today. We continue on BBC

:13:56. > :14:02.Two. We may see you there. Goodbye.
