:00:25. > :00:24.I know who killed Abigail Toms. Her Majesty will present the

:00:25. > :02:13.Wasn't that clever? Thank you for those wise words, Boris. It is men's

:02:14. > :02:18.semifinals day today at Wimbledon 2017 and in a couple of hours, we

:02:19. > :02:22.will know the final two who will contest Sunday's final. Anticipation

:02:23. > :02:26.and excitement in the air, it is always a tense day, but those who

:02:27. > :02:31.hold their nerve when they line up to serve will make it through. This

:02:32. > :02:35.championship has had many twists, turns, surprises and shocks, this

:02:36. > :02:38.final four is not the big four were expected, but the Booty of the grass

:02:39. > :02:43.means even today with one overwhelming favourites to win, we

:02:44. > :02:50.should expect the unexpected. -- the Booty. This is the line-up.

:02:51. > :02:53.Sam Querrey is the big serving American who beat Andy Murray in the

:02:54. > :03:02.quarters. He's much more than an ace machine. He has game suited for

:03:03. > :03:09.grass. His opponent is the cool and classic Croat Marin Cilic who

:03:10. > :03:16.already has a grand slam title and also serves basis for fun and loves

:03:17. > :03:21.the surface. -- aces. Roger Federer is audibly the greatest player of

:03:22. > :03:25.all-time, winning here seven times, 18 grand slam titles, and a win sees

:03:26. > :03:33.him reach a record 11th Wimbledon final. Not surprisingly, he is the

:03:34. > :03:36.one to beat. Facing the Swiss legend is Tomas Berdych, runner-up here in

:03:37. > :03:43.2010, and on the way to the final, he beat Roger Federer. The Czech has

:03:44. > :03:48.the Murray but he will need to fire on all cylinders today to stand a

:03:49. > :03:56.chance. -- has the armoury. This is the order on Centre Court. Querrey

:03:57. > :04:01.against Cilic, followed by Federer against Berdych, watch the drama

:04:02. > :04:08.unfold this afternoon on the BBC. Our 45 minutes -- 45 minutes ago,

:04:09. > :04:13.Querrey and Cilic were poised to walk onto Centre Court, Sam Querrey

:04:14. > :04:29.is the first American to walk on Centre Court in the semifinals

:04:30. > :04:36.since... Andy Roddick. Earlier, Tomas Berdych, beaten by Rafael

:04:37. > :04:42.Nadal in the 2010 final, was warming up. And he was hitting here with

:04:43. > :04:47.Federer in preparation for Wimbledon, did he learn anything? We

:04:48. > :04:53.shall see. That is the man Berdych has the beat, and Federer's

:04:54. > :04:58.quarterfinal victory over Milos Raonic was magnificent. Majestic,

:04:59. > :05:04.not enough words to describe how this man is at the tennis player

:05:05. > :05:09.Andy sporting icon. Good afternoon. We are blessed to have Roger Federer

:05:10. > :05:11.in the sport, playing in his 19th consecutive championships here,

:05:12. > :05:17.bidding for his eighth Wimbledon title, to take his grand slam title

:05:18. > :05:22.up to 90. Record after record with Roger. And this is the great man a

:05:23. > :05:28.couple of moments ago on the players balcony with his friend and agent

:05:29. > :05:31.Tony, watching the outside courts. You would not know he has a

:05:32. > :05:34.Wimbledon semifinal this afternoon, but that is the way he prepares for

:05:35. > :05:38.it. And he will be ready when the time comes. I wonder if he will be

:05:39. > :05:43.worried about the weather? Probably not, they have got the roof on

:05:44. > :05:46.Centre Court, but will they need that today?

:05:47. > :05:51.Let's find out from Carol. I don't think so! We are looking at a lot of

:05:52. > :05:56.cloud around but we will see a break and sunny intervals as well. In the

:05:57. > :06:01.sunshine, temperatures as high as 22 Celsius, but under the cloud, more

:06:02. > :06:05.like 20. We also have a noticeable north-westerly breeze. Through the

:06:06. > :06:10.afternoon, that will ease. Into the evening, we have a similar scenario

:06:11. > :06:15.with cloud, but we will see sunny breaks in that the temperature is

:06:16. > :06:19.slipping. Tomorrow, fairly cloudy, the cloud building through the

:06:20. > :06:25.morning. From noon until three o'clock, a 40% chance of light rain.

:06:26. > :06:31.After that, the risk diminishes. Richard Brittain up. And it will

:06:32. > :06:36.turn more humid -- that will brighten up. Highs of 24 Celsius. We

:06:37. > :06:42.can cope with that, Carol, thank you! You can watch all the matches

:06:43. > :06:45.from the Doubles, the boys and girls competition and the wheelchair

:06:46. > :06:48.Championships on the BBC sport website and the red button. And we

:06:49. > :06:53.would like you to join in the competition -- the conversation as

:06:54. > :07:00.well. So many ways you can continue to watch Wimbledon. Before we go to

:07:01. > :07:06.Centre Court, we were just update Court 17, were Alfie Hewitt is

:07:07. > :07:11.facing Gustavo Fernandez and going well, taking the first set 6-4,

:07:12. > :07:20.three games all, and that match will be on BBC Two soon. Now we are going

:07:21. > :07:25.to Centre Court for the first of the men's semifinals, Sam Querrey

:07:26. > :07:29.against Marin Cilic. They played here in 2012, the second longest

:07:30. > :07:34.match in the history of the Championships, it could be a long

:07:35. > :07:38.afternoon. It is six games all, but Querrey has a mini-break of serve in

:07:39. > :07:44.the tie-break. So let's join this live with our commentators John

:07:45. > :07:50.McEnroe and John infidel. -- John infidel.

:07:51. > :08:02.Just when you thought Querrey had the initiative, nobody does. Cilic

:08:03. > :08:05.much more animated than the big American. And whatever happens here,

:08:06. > :08:27.it will be set point after this. That is a tight return all there.

:08:28. > :08:36.Almost too much time to think about that one. That was a second serve

:08:37. > :08:39.from big serving, big hitting Sam Querrey, at 88 hours per hour. It is

:08:40. > :09:08.set point for the American. Six all, six all. We should not be

:09:09. > :09:14.surprised at the margins have been so then when they have played here.

:09:15. > :09:17.The good thing about this set, it has not just been about serves.

:09:18. > :09:22.There has been neat footwork and nice touches at the net, good ground

:09:23. > :09:25.strokes. Because there have been matches this championship this year

:09:26. > :09:31.when you have had big guys against big guys and there have been no

:09:32. > :09:35.rallies. I did a much earlier in the championship, the longest rally in

:09:36. > :09:40.the first sets was four shots. This has been engaging and it maybe on

:09:41. > :09:41.simmer at the moment and maybe it will boil over as the afternoon

:09:42. > :10:04.progresses. That was in, more than in hope and

:10:05. > :10:14.expectation. That was very close. Yes. It never really moved to the

:10:15. > :10:22.other side. I think he sensed that ball was just out. Sam is determined

:10:23. > :10:27.to stay closer to the baseline, to return the second serve. Someone has

:10:28. > :10:34.just fallen over in the stands. It is set is all -- six all, second

:10:35. > :10:41.serve. Employee tennis terms, a scene that means he will get a first

:10:42. > :10:45.serve back. -- in tennis terms. Various members of the Armed Forces

:10:46. > :10:51.going into the stand on the left of Sam Querrey. The umpire is on the

:10:52. > :10:59.phone to Wimbledon officials, just to clarify the situation here. I

:11:00. > :11:02.can't see if it is a man or a woman but somebody has clearly collapsed,

:11:03. > :11:11.five or six rounds back from the court edge. And it is not

:11:12. > :11:20.particularly warm here today. McGhee, the low 70s in temperature.

:11:21. > :11:27.And Sam Querrey watching like a hawk what is going on there at the

:11:28. > :11:33.moment. I think this happened with Marin in an earlier match, there was

:11:34. > :11:37.a big delay. It happened at Queen's as well. This time for it. You hope

:11:38. > :11:59.whoever it it is OK. Our line of sight, it is a lady.

:12:00. > :12:06.Obscured by people standing up in front of her. She is able to walk

:12:07. > :12:12.away from courtside and is being assisted down the steps by a couple

:12:13. > :12:24.of the members of the Armed Forces here. So hopefully, she is going to

:12:25. > :12:30.be all right. In the meantime, for the games Giants, the stress level

:12:31. > :12:43.just went up. -- for these two Giants. A lot more time than these

:12:44. > :12:48.two anticipated. So does he gets a first serve back? Yes, he is going

:12:49. > :13:19.to get a first serve. Should he gets a first serve?

:13:20. > :13:31.Oh, maybe it was the delay. Maybe his mind wasn't quite there, that is

:13:32. > :13:38.a bad error from Cilic. So Sam Querrey. One big serve away from the

:13:39. > :13:57.opening set of this Wimbledon semifinal.

:13:58. > :14:15.Well, two errors from Cilic on the backhand side and advantage USA.

:14:16. > :14:21.Well, you did say it was more important for Querrey to win that

:14:22. > :14:26.opening set, so he has done what you requested. And Cilic, who is to say

:14:27. > :14:31.how much that unfortunate incident with the lady played with his mind?

:14:32. > :14:38.Those were two errors the like of which he had not hit the previous 45

:14:39. > :14:47.minutes. Yes. That is unfortunate, surprisingly poor. Even with the

:14:48. > :14:51.tension and stress. That's why they place them up, that's why you don't

:14:52. > :14:57.know for sure because everything pointed, especially earlier in the

:14:58. > :15:01.tie-break, that Cilic would pull it off, he has never lost to Querrey

:15:02. > :15:07.and he has been here more often. Arguably, his form has been better.

:15:08. > :15:13.Yet Sam Querrey has just hung around and competed harder than he ever

:15:14. > :15:24.has. His belief, you can see it. With him. He is not a man that shows

:15:25. > :15:33.a lot of emotion. But this opportunity, when you see a

:15:34. > :15:38.defending champion injured and beaten down, you can capitalise and

:15:39. > :15:43.see... He never thought he would be in this position. A Wimbledon final.

:15:44. > :15:49.He is two sets away from a Wimbledon final. This is amazing. When they

:15:50. > :15:52.met here in that match a couple of years ago that was the second

:15:53. > :15:56.longest match in Wimbledon's history, it was also 8-6 in the

:15:57. > :16:10.first set tie-break, but on that occasion to Cilic. Most people would

:16:11. > :16:17.have picked Cilic. He just looked like he felt the pressure got to

:16:18. > :16:19.him. He is not the first guy that has happened to, or woman. Nor will

:16:20. > :16:36.he be the last. And you know they get given volumes

:16:37. > :16:40.and volumes and volumes of statistics and facts and figures

:16:41. > :16:46.about these matches every day. From the press room. But there is one

:16:47. > :16:50.thing I thought, really? This is not to jinx Marin Cilic so early in the

:16:51. > :17:03.second set. But I could not believe that no

:17:04. > :17:15.number seven seed has ever got to the final of Wimbledon. In the Open

:17:16. > :17:25.era, isn't that just amazing? Has a 24 seed? Just so he doesn't feel so

:17:26. > :17:37.bad! I doubt that. 24 seeds making it to the final. That was the one

:17:38. > :17:38.fact I didn't have! In a million facts, it was the one I was looking

:17:39. > :17:59.for! 133 miles per hour. Going to be

:18:00. > :18:19.upset if you are Cilic right now, he will feel like he blew that set.

:18:20. > :18:26.If Roger Federer is going to win the second match, if, who would he

:18:27. > :18:35.rather play in the final which marked Odyssey not care? He probably

:18:36. > :18:40.doesn't care, knowing him. -- in the final? Or does he not care? This

:18:41. > :18:46.would be one way to ease the pain if Cilic could finally get the service

:18:47. > :18:52.break. Two errors from Cilic cost him that tie-break. And two errors

:18:53. > :19:35.from Querrey giving him a brooch back in.

:19:36. > :19:43.A little slow to react to that short ball, if used stand as far back as

:19:44. > :19:49.Cilic on the return, you had better get yourself back into a better

:19:50. > :19:50.position. Especially if you hit it cleanly. And you should anticipate

:19:51. > :20:19.sure to reply. -- is sure to reply. Well, Cilic was eyeing up an early

:20:20. > :20:27.break. But things are falling away of Querrey at the moment. It is

:20:28. > :20:30.almost worse for Cilic. He was able to get the break point, finally, and

:20:31. > :20:35.then not capitalise. So that will intensify his frustration after

:20:36. > :20:46.having dumped the first set and the tie-break. We will have to be real

:20:47. > :20:50.careful right here. He will be aware that Querrey has played three long

:20:51. > :20:56.five set matches and he would think that the longer he is in this game,

:20:57. > :21:00.the more he is really in this game? He let an opportunity slip.

:21:01. > :21:05.Adrenaline could be a wonderful thing. I suspect Sam is running on

:21:06. > :21:38.some of it right now. Sam's likes to me have more life

:21:39. > :21:58.than they did earlier in the Murray match. -- leg.

:21:59. > :22:04.Maybe by the nature of the circumstances as well, do you think

:22:05. > :22:09.Querrey did not get enough credit for how well he played against

:22:10. > :22:16.Murray? Because of the injury, yes. He started to play incredible tennis

:22:17. > :22:25.towards the latter stages, the last two sets. He is not somebody... He

:22:26. > :22:53.actually relaxed. You can hear the flawed as the ball

:22:54. > :23:05.hits the back of the court. -- the noise. Sam showed the tennis world

:23:06. > :23:11.something when he was able to capitalise against his four match

:23:12. > :23:12.points playing Anderson and came back. A lesser man would have gone

:23:13. > :24:00.away and lost that. Great play! From Cilic. Must have

:24:01. > :24:10.been shaking a bit at the start of that game, but he holds on. That is

:24:11. > :24:17.a pretty important game. I know it is early in the second set, but

:24:18. > :24:19.emotionally, Cilic is on a bit of a downer right now. He's got to battle

:24:20. > :24:33.through that. Being the favourite, expectation

:24:34. > :24:44.comes with that. A lot of people were talking about Cilic even before

:24:45. > :24:47.this event. Especially as the draw has unfolded for him. Pretty big

:24:48. > :25:00.favourite to get to the final. That is a colossal serve out wide

:25:01. > :25:27.from Querrey. Not doing a lot of serve and volley,

:25:28. > :25:35.but then again, they don't need to. Four aces from Querrey, seven from

:25:36. > :25:46.Cilic so far. Less than a minute. Querrey is leading. So is the key

:25:47. > :25:50.thing for Cilic to hang in there for the moment the ship and get to

:25:51. > :25:54.neutral, and then see where we go from there? Yes, the first thing,

:25:55. > :26:00.make sure you don't lose your own serve. You put as much energy as you

:26:01. > :26:09.have and focus in the step one. Step two would be, because Sam Querrey

:26:10. > :26:15.has played a lot more than his opponent, to make this guy work. You

:26:16. > :26:21.can see that Querrey, his forehand is his other weapon. And when you

:26:22. > :26:29.give this guy the opportunity, he can really debilitate you. And he

:26:30. > :26:34.has done an excellent job of that in this event. You have got to make

:26:35. > :26:40.this guy work hard point in and point out if you are Cilic. I don't

:26:41. > :26:45.particularly like his strategy of standing as far back off the return

:26:46. > :26:50.as he is, he is giving up some court positioning. And he is allowing

:26:51. > :26:59.Querrey to dictate more of these points. These two great men that I

:27:00. > :27:05.grew up watching, Rudd labour there. And these great conversations

:27:06. > :27:10.generation to generation, the physicality is so different. The

:27:11. > :27:19.weapons people have at their disposal. We can talk for about

:27:20. > :27:24.whether Laver would be a great player in this era, but here he was

:27:25. > :27:28.a different size, that might prevent him competing. If he had these

:27:29. > :27:32.rackets, he could have done some damage. But he has served at 130

:27:33. > :28:16.mph? Probably not that big. Oh, he hung in there, Cilic! Shot

:28:17. > :28:21.selection on the second overhead. The ball did not bounce high enough

:28:22. > :28:26.so he was forced to go to the slice. He should have won the point a

:28:27. > :28:29.couple of different times, hand it to Cilic for battling. That is

:28:30. > :28:46.exactly what he needs to do, hang in there.

:28:47. > :28:54.I put Sam played a great first point. Probably contributed to that

:28:55. > :29:18.double fault. First one of the match.

:29:19. > :29:28.Sam is not budging so he is convinced that was wide. Which just

:29:29. > :29:57.goes to show... Well, that ball did not really go

:29:58. > :30:22.through to Querrey, so he was reaching for it.

:30:23. > :30:27.For Cilic it is about being gritty and determined and resolute at the

:30:28. > :30:38.moment. You talked about what Cilic needs to

:30:39. > :30:42.do and one of those would be to extend rallies and make him work

:30:43. > :30:47.harder but that is easier said than done. When you're trying to deal

:30:48. > :30:52.with Querrey's serve and his forehand... You don't get in a lot

:30:53. > :30:59.of long points. I would like to see him standing

:31:00. > :31:18.close on the second serve. On the last one he retreated further

:31:19. > :31:22.behind the baseline. He hit a good return but you need to hit it deep

:31:23. > :31:30.otherwise Querrey can take over the point with one shot. Or at least mix

:31:31. > :31:52.it up. Querrey misfiring a bit at the moment.

:31:53. > :32:14.But 0-30 on Querrey's serve is only an opportunity. That is a heck of a

:32:15. > :32:34.play. Especially with the half-volley he had to hit.

:32:35. > :32:45.That was the biggest serve he has hit, to go wide at 132, nothing

:32:46. > :32:47.Cilic could do. 0-30 on the Querrey serve, you are not halfway towards

:32:48. > :33:22.the game. APPLAUSE

:33:23. > :33:28.Cilic clenches his fist. And in the context of this match, this is one

:33:29. > :33:31.of those very rare points, a break point opportunity. And in this case,

:33:32. > :33:51.it is on Sam Querrey's serve. Not a good time for the wind to kick

:33:52. > :33:59.up if you are serving. Serve and volley second serve and gets away

:34:00. > :34:14.with it. There was the raw, look at his mouth. -- roar.

:34:15. > :34:30.Querrey watched that really well. The swirling wind, what it going in

:34:31. > :34:38.or coming out? -- was it. It was very well done considering the

:34:39. > :34:51.circumstances. That is a good hold. Cilic shakes his head.

:34:52. > :34:57.Because the number of break point we are going to see in this match,

:34:58. > :35:02.however long it goes, will probably count on the fingers of two hands so

:35:03. > :35:08.if you get a chance you have to take it. Absolutely, and especially make

:35:09. > :35:15.your opponent Burn it, make him hit a ball, a tough volley -- make your

:35:16. > :35:20.opponent earn it. When you get a second serve, and it is makeable,

:35:21. > :35:25.that is when you tear your hair out. Querrey has plugged away, he has

:35:26. > :35:31.continued to execute at a high level. And he has got to be starting

:35:32. > :35:37.to believe that he can get to a Grand Slam final. Cilic is the one

:35:38. > :35:44.who feels his centres are reeling a bit and he is starting to battle

:35:45. > :35:49.himself -- his senses. How deep can you dig in order to get to a

:35:50. > :35:54.Wimbledon final, for either of these guys, for the first time? From

:35:55. > :35:59.Querrey's point of view, there must be the thought that this might be my

:36:00. > :36:03.one and only opportunity to get to a Grand Slam final, don't blow it.

:36:04. > :36:09.There is some truth to that but then again he did not think he would be

:36:10. > :36:14.here in the first place. You have got both sides of your mind, the

:36:15. > :36:18.good and bad, telling you different things and you have got to try to

:36:19. > :36:21.focus on this unexpected opportunity. He certainly seems

:36:22. > :37:21.relaxed. There was a yelp of frustration from

:37:22. > :37:31.Querrey. But nowhere near the Richter scale

:37:32. > :37:53.of Cilic earlier. Former England rugby captain

:37:54. > :38:11.Lawrence Dallaglio. What are we all going to do with our

:38:12. > :38:19.Saturday mornings after the last few weeks? Ace number ten.

:38:20. > :38:28.We did not expect there to be a whole lot between these two tall men

:38:29. > :38:30.and there is not. The second longest match ever played here was when they

:38:31. > :38:48.last played at Wimbledon. And it has all the makings of a long

:38:49. > :38:57.one again. Querrey has never been in this position. He has played a lot

:38:58. > :39:17.of tennis to get here. He has got to be feeling something in those legs.

:39:18. > :39:29.I was going to say a good strike but it was just long.

:39:30. > :39:34.This is a replica of the situation in Querrey's previous service game

:39:35. > :39:50.but he managed to escape from that. It will be hard at this time. The

:39:51. > :39:57.first signs of some fatigue and a little bit lethargic out there.

:39:58. > :40:02.Cilic might feel he can finally take advantage of it. There was a mini

:40:03. > :40:04.roar from Cilic is that drifted long and stand-by for a real big one if

:40:05. > :40:42.he breaks here. Brilliant. There is the big roar

:40:43. > :40:52.from Cilic. The first break of the match.

:40:53. > :41:02.It could be a big moment. It certainly can. You could see that

:41:03. > :41:05.one guy was battling nerves little bit, recognising the amount of

:41:06. > :41:09.opportunities he had, frustrated he was not able to pull out the first

:41:10. > :41:13.set in a tie-break he thought he should have won and frustrated he

:41:14. > :41:17.had not broken already with the couple of opportunities. But I

:41:18. > :41:25.believe sensing that for the first time Querrey got a little bit weary,

:41:26. > :41:29.a tiny bit. And you could see him reaching for some balls,

:41:30. > :41:33.understandable given that he has played three consecutive five set

:41:34. > :41:37.matches and maybe the reality of what he could be accomplishing, to

:41:38. > :41:43.get to a Wimbledon final, hit him and you have to credit Marin Cilic

:41:44. > :41:53.for continuing to battle as hard as he did and finally getting rewarded

:41:54. > :41:59.for it. Now Querrey again, soon, he may not win this set, but he has

:42:00. > :42:04.defined another dear, another wind, so he can get himself to a position

:42:05. > :42:18.again where he feels he can pull this off -- another gear.

:42:19. > :42:28.It is a fascinating battle of wills, mental and physical strength. At the

:42:29. > :43:02.moment, it might be advantage Cilic. And he is missing a few at the

:43:03. > :43:06.moment, Querrey, and the whole mental side of sport is laid bare

:43:07. > :43:11.here for as on Centre Court. No matter what sport you are playing,

:43:12. > :43:14.that is a fascinating duo, I wonder what they're talking about, Sachin

:43:15. > :43:19.Tendulkar, the greatest batsmen of all time and Eddie Jones, the

:43:20. > :43:38.England coach. -- England rugby coach.

:43:39. > :43:45.They are probably talking about, I didn't realise they made them this

:43:46. > :43:49.tall in tennis! Think if you put Sachin Tendulkar and Eddie Jones

:43:50. > :44:07.together they would be the same size as Marin Cilic!

:44:08. > :44:17.Shot. Eddie is actually wondering if Cilic has a grandparent who came

:44:18. > :44:27.from Lowestoft and he might be able to play in the back row for England.

:44:28. > :44:32.Strong emotional effort by Cilic to re-establish himself here in the

:44:33. > :44:57.last ten minutes or so. The seventh seed, he has been ranked

:44:58. > :45:03.as high as six in the world, finished in the top ten on two

:45:04. > :45:10.occasions, top 15 on four other occasions. He has been knocking on

:45:11. > :45:15.the door. And he was knocking on the door last year, two set up against

:45:16. > :45:19.Federer and lost in five. He will not be thinking about that at the

:45:20. > :45:25.moment but he might do in 48 hours' time. You look at his drawer, Rafael

:45:26. > :45:31.Nadal, I had to deal with him, Andy Murray, I don't have to deal with

:45:32. > :45:35.him. This is a golden opportunity. To win this, he is only going to

:45:36. > :45:46.have to beat one of the top four. At the most. Shot. Actually one of

:45:47. > :46:19.the top 15. That was hit hard. He has really got

:46:20. > :46:32.his eye in at the moment. In Tendulkar speak.

:46:33. > :46:43.It was a canny serve from Querrey but just long. That was a canny

:46:44. > :46:48.serve as well. One of the few times Cilic did try to take that second

:46:49. > :46:56.serve on early and Sam immediately went right into the body. That is a

:46:57. > :47:17.gutsy hold from the American. He doesn't seem to have a whole lot

:47:18. > :47:23.of spring in the legs at the moment. Clearly what he would need to try to

:47:24. > :47:29.take a good swing, attack are served if given the chance. He has do hope

:47:30. > :47:33.that Cilic tightens up here. Otherwise he is going to have to sit

:47:34. > :47:41.back down in a minute or two and regroup mentally. You can see him

:47:42. > :47:45.trying to chew on something to give him a bit of energy because he knows

:47:46. > :47:54.he will be in for the long haul, especially if he does not win this

:47:55. > :48:01.game. That is our first look at the Hill today. They might not be as

:48:02. > :48:05.partisan in this match as they undoubtedly will be in the second

:48:06. > :48:09.when I think Tomas Berdych will find himself very much the underdog when

:48:10. > :48:12.it comes to the affections of the crowd, but almost everybody has that

:48:13. > :48:20.when Roger Federer is on the other side of the net. That is for sure.

:48:21. > :48:23.So here is the opportunity for Marin Cilic to square things up at one set

:48:24. > :48:55.apiece. And even the net is against Querrey

:48:56. > :50:16.at the moment. APPLAUSE

:50:17. > :50:23.With a swagger and another big serve, Cilic squares this semifinal.

:50:24. > :50:29.SUE BARKER: After one hour and 20 for minute it is honest even on

:50:30. > :50:34.Centre Court. We will be right back with this match. Everybody here on

:50:35. > :50:39.the Hill enjoying watching the drama unfold on Centre Court. They came

:50:40. > :50:41.here earlier to claim their place on Henman Hill because they have the

:50:42. > :50:44.match they are enjoying right now and coming up later, a man with the

:50:45. > :51:38.most impressive record. The one and only Roger Federer will

:51:39. > :51:43.be in action on Centre Court later against Tomas Berdych. Other matches

:51:44. > :51:48.being played here at Wimbledon today and out on court 17, Alfie Hewett,

:51:49. > :51:52.the French Open champion, started well by taking the opening set

:51:53. > :51:55.against Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina, the number two seed, but

:51:56. > :52:02.lost the second set in a tie-break and is down a break in the third.

:52:03. > :52:08.That match is on BBC Two. And on the red button, the feature match is on

:52:09. > :52:14.Court Number One web Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina are one

:52:15. > :52:17.set and 5-1 up over Groenefeld and Tesco, just one game away from

:52:18. > :52:22.booking their place in the final. That is on the red button -- and

:52:23. > :52:29.Peschke. We are heading back to Centre Court.

:52:30. > :52:37.JOHN MCENROE: The force may be with Cilic at the moment but it is key

:52:38. > :52:46.for Querrey that he holds at the start of this third set. And the

:52:47. > :52:48.kick second serve is giving Cilic plenty of time to unload off that

:52:49. > :53:13.return. That was a shriek from Querrey. And

:53:14. > :53:20.the first sign of anger and frustration, and maybe tiredness as

:53:21. > :53:39.well. I would be amazed if there was not some of that.

:53:40. > :53:49.Guess who is picking up on it. Cilic.

:53:50. > :54:01.So three break points right at the start of this third set. And the

:54:02. > :54:19.pendulum swinging towards Croatia. He needs two more of those.

:54:20. > :54:24.He has got to give it everything he had got here and just go big. Or go

:54:25. > :54:42.home. Mr Querrey is challenging the call

:54:43. > :54:53.on the right sideline, the ball was called out. It was a great strike,

:54:54. > :54:57.124 mph. The umpire called it. Second service. And he had a great

:54:58. > :55:17.vantage point, just. Neatly played by Querrey. An

:55:18. > :55:22.agonising moment, you thought it might have drifted wide, but from 0-

:55:23. > :55:25.42 deuce. You can see where Cilic can get in trouble because he is so

:55:26. > :55:32.far back on that second serve return. He has to jump on that short

:55:33. > :55:34.dotball but it ended up costing him the point and perhaps the game --

:55:35. > :56:18.shorter ball. You can't hit a tennis ball any

:56:19. > :56:31.better than that. He was on the full run gone absolutely crushes it.

:56:32. > :56:42.He saw that early, both players going behind their respective

:56:43. > :56:45.opponent, both seem to have gotten away from that. I think that would

:56:46. > :57:02.be a strong move to utilise that more often.

:57:03. > :57:10.It is only the first game of this third set but this may have

:57:11. > :57:22.considerable bearing on the passage into the final.

:57:23. > :57:31.APPLAUSE Well done, Querrey. He kept his

:57:32. > :57:37.head. There was some scurrying from Cilic on the other side. He has

:57:38. > :57:53.shown some excellent hands and feel throughout this tournament.

:57:54. > :58:13.They long, topsy-turvy first game of the third set. -- a long first game.

:58:14. > :58:17.And in the final analysis, who is to say how significant that could be?

:58:18. > :58:21.Because if Cilic had broken, it would've been a marked advantage.

:58:22. > :58:26.You would still say he has the edge and is probable winner at this

:58:27. > :58:31.particular point but in order for Sam to keep positive and also not

:58:32. > :58:35.let the fatigue infiltrate his mind more, that was an extremely

:58:36. > :58:41.important game and very well done to pull it out.

:58:42. > :58:49.That could give him that second wind, that extra boost, that extra

:58:50. > :58:54.gear he is going to need to get to the final. And Cilic is thinking, I

:58:55. > :58:58.should have broken, I should be 1-0 up. A few mind games he has to deal

:58:59. > :59:20.with here. One of those balls rejected out of

:59:21. > :59:27.hand by Cilic. They have been hit so hard, it lost

:59:28. > :59:41.all its fluff. Both guys having a pretty good day

:59:42. > :59:48.percentage-wise come up in the high 60s. Five percentage points higher

:59:49. > :59:54.than either one of them has served during the entire tournament.

:59:55. > :59:58.Pretty clear right now that Cilic, physically, is the fresher of the

:59:59. > :00:52.two. Fairly straightforward for the

:00:53. > :00:57.Croat. One set all, one game all. That is exactly what you want to do

:00:58. > :01:03.if you are Cilic, you came so close to breaking. Win the game quickly.

:01:04. > :01:32.Get back on Querrey's shoulders. Keep making him work hard.

:01:33. > :02:12.Well,... The heartbeat goes up a notch. And then back again.

:02:13. > :02:20.He is not moving as well as he was an hour ago. No, and he has taken

:02:21. > :02:38.the air out of the building, as they say, a bit.

:02:39. > :02:53.Oh! So he is emotionally flat. Physically fatigued. And getting a

:02:54. > :02:58.bit Kelis. And showing signs of frustrated -- and getting a bit

:02:59. > :03:03.Kelis, and showing signs of frustration. All bad signs. The

:03:04. > :03:17.crowd saying, come on, Sam. Two big points.

:03:18. > :03:26.A very tired to serve at 133 miles per hour from Querrey. He looked

:03:27. > :03:39.exhausted. But it is still break point.

:03:40. > :03:48.Big moment here, Cilic thinks he has won it. And Querrey only half played

:03:49. > :04:01.the shot because he thought it was long. But it wasn't. On the back of

:04:02. > :04:07.the line. And Cilic in front. Well, he didn't half plate, that ball

:04:08. > :04:14.caught the line it held up a little bit, extremely tough to tan doll --

:04:15. > :04:19.to handle. And Cilic officially on a roll. Four service games in a row

:04:20. > :04:27.from Querrey and he could have won all of them. He could have lost all

:04:28. > :04:36.of them. Talking about Cilic? Yes. Energy wise, Querrey has dropped

:04:37. > :04:42.down. Cilic has picked up on it. And it is going to be a tall order now

:04:43. > :04:49.for Querrey. He's got to dig deeper. And perhaps more than he did against

:04:50. > :04:54.Murray. If you think that was the best effort of his career, pull that

:04:55. > :04:57.out, no question about it. At times like this, you look at what has

:04:58. > :05:06.happened over the last week here at Wimbledon, and Querrey has beaten

:05:07. > :05:15.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kevin Anderson. He has beaten Andy Murray. 76, 6-4,

:05:16. > :05:20.6-1, 6-1. That is an awful lot of high octane tennis, with huge prizes

:05:21. > :05:24.at stake. Exponentially getting bigger and bigger with every round

:05:25. > :05:28.that goes by and with every opponent that comes your way. At some points,

:05:29. > :05:36.surely, somebody will take the air out of the balloon. Exactly right.

:05:37. > :05:41.The emotions and the expectations increase. Pressure. And you

:05:42. > :05:48.sometimes try to find energy where it is not there. And believe me, it

:05:49. > :06:04.is not a good feeling. Advantage Cilic.

:06:05. > :06:12.He benefited by that ball, Querrey guessed right. He is playing with a

:06:13. > :06:20.lot of more energy, hitting a very clean ball at this moment. He has

:06:21. > :06:27.settled in quite nicely. His first-ever opportunity at a final

:06:28. > :06:35.for Cilic here. Don't forget, he has not been here before. He has been in

:06:36. > :06:45.a US Open semifinal and he has won the US Open. He beat Kei Nishikori

:06:46. > :06:54.in that final. That will cheer Querrey up no end. Beautifully clean

:06:55. > :07:04.strike. Sam is also Australian, he was in 2010. First ever quarter at

:07:05. > :07:22.Roland Garros was this year as well, Cilic. Oh. How quickly things can

:07:23. > :07:31.change! Never a break until you have held yourself.

:07:32. > :07:49.A lot of ball down single now. -- bouncing. And from nowhere, Querrey

:07:50. > :07:50.has maybe caught himself back into this match. Two opportunities here

:07:51. > :09:07.to break back. Well, what do you know? What do you

:09:08. > :09:14.know? Well, we saw when he played Murray, he was 6-3, 6-4 down at

:09:15. > :09:19.service break and suddenly, three straight games, two breaks in a row.

:09:20. > :09:33.That was something else. He just pulled a rabbit out of the hat here.

:09:34. > :10:31.He has utilised that serve beautifully to pull Cilic of the

:10:32. > :10:45.court. Still standing pretty far back.

:10:46. > :10:49.You've got to love this game, haven't you? The ebb and flow, it is

:10:50. > :11:06.just crazy. Five minutes ago, Sam Querrey was as

:11:07. > :11:13.good as out of this tournament. And now... I don't know about quite that

:11:14. > :11:18.far, but he certainly was in trouble. As he proved in his match

:11:19. > :11:23.against Anderson when he lost those match points, as he proved big-time

:11:24. > :11:28.against Murray. Even the third set, when he was down, Murray was serving

:11:29. > :11:33.for that set and he extended it into a tie-breaker. The amount of effort

:11:34. > :11:36.he gave to in the second, hanging in in the third and benefiting in the

:11:37. > :11:45.fourth and fifth because of Murray's injury. And now seeds of doubt back

:11:46. > :11:50.in Cilic's mind. That's why it makes it so interesting to watch two guys

:11:51. > :11:57.out there. Sometimes, you are battling yourself. You always your

:11:58. > :12:05.opponent. And you have to be able to shrug off a lot of bad things. That

:12:06. > :12:11.can happen very quickly. At 15-15, 2-1, Cilic, he had a backhand, it

:12:12. > :12:14.was an open court. He had not missed that for a while, he mis-hits it and

:12:15. > :12:27.next thing you know, he has lost his serve. What makes Roger Federer is

:12:28. > :12:31.so amazing, he always looks so relaxed, and you can see how

:12:32. > :12:35.stressful it can be. The stress is all over Cilic's face at the moment.

:12:36. > :12:41.He was slumped more than sitting upright at the change of ends.

:12:42. > :12:43.Thinking, I was in charge of this game a couple of moments ago. And

:12:44. > :13:45.now I'm behind. How did that happen? UMPIRE: correction. We the points.

:13:46. > :14:41.Overruled by Sam Keothavong. -- James.

:14:42. > :15:19.I always thought after I dumped a serve like Cilic, why did I not do

:15:20. > :15:26.that the last time? What happened?! Moving on through that as he held

:15:27. > :15:30.easily. Querrey has played a lot more tennis, he's got to be feeling

:15:31. > :15:39.it. Keep the intensity and composure, if possible. Work this

:15:40. > :15:45.guy and every possible shot. Sam has got a little life in that arm, that

:15:46. > :15:48.is for sure, the server seems to be the last thing to go. He is a big,

:15:49. > :16:19.powerful man. Difficult being in the crowd for a

:16:20. > :16:24.match like this. Because you have got your eyes fixed on these two

:16:25. > :16:30.gladiators in the ring. But it is hard to keep applauding aces or

:16:31. > :16:35.unreturnable serves. So if it sounds a bit flat at the moment, it is not,

:16:36. > :16:42.everybody here is just engrossed in the battle that is happening in

:16:43. > :16:52.front of them. And that is great tennis. Two big hits from Cilic. A

:16:53. > :16:58.break of serve on each side already in this set. There is more happening

:16:59. > :17:47.out there than it maybe appears. Take that. And swinging Sam is still

:17:48. > :17:58.swinging. And as long as he is, he is in there? You have covered boxing

:17:59. > :18:03.over the years, correct? These guys are the heavyweights out there. And

:18:04. > :18:07.they are just swinging away. A bit more subtlety to beg games as their

:18:08. > :18:12.careers have moved along. But these guys better at the net. Both these

:18:13. > :18:17.guys exhibit touch when they need to. But ultimately, they are powered

:18:18. > :18:26.punches. They will try to knock you out. And why shouldn't you if you

:18:27. > :18:32.are six feet six inches tall? You find angles more easily than us mere

:18:33. > :18:38.mortals. Half an hour after the opening game of the third set, which

:18:39. > :18:41.was really tight the whole way, Querrey won it and even though there

:18:42. > :18:47.were breaks of serve after that, here we find ourselves by virtue of

:18:48. > :18:54.him serving first, the pressure bit by bit wrapping up on Cilic to try

:18:55. > :19:06.and keep things level pegging. And we might be heading towards, as

:19:07. > :19:12.predicted, a second tie-break. The thing about Sam Querrey, he doesn't

:19:13. > :19:18.waste a lot of energy emotionally. His serve is very efficient. He is

:19:19. > :19:24.not standing as far back as Cilic. Subsequently, not having to cover as

:19:25. > :20:00.much ground off a return. That should help a bit.

:20:01. > :20:05.Twice as many aces from the racket of Cilic in this match as we have

:20:06. > :20:27.had from Querrey. Sam has more aces in the tournament,

:20:28. > :20:30.but he has played a lot of more. He will have had to work a lot harder

:20:31. > :20:48.to get here than Cilic. You have got to think that is going

:20:49. > :21:02.to pay off. A commanding hold from Cilic. This is when you look at the

:21:03. > :21:20.scoreboard, 1- all, for- all. In which way is this going to go? --

:21:21. > :21:22.4-4. Big shots from Cilic. Every shot is great, from both guys.

:21:23. > :22:42.Starting with the serve. Well, if you thought Sam Querrey was

:22:43. > :22:47.a one trick pony, think again. The touch with Sam Querrey, throughout

:22:48. > :23:00.this event, he's got -- on a real nice job.

:23:01. > :23:31.Twisted enough -- just enough to make you respect what he is doing.

:23:32. > :23:57.Well, the beauty and the beast from Querrey in that game. And Cilic is

:23:58. > :24:09.going to have to serve to stay in the set. The adrenaline is pumping a

:24:10. > :24:22.lot of hard in Cilic right now than it was a couple of games ago. He

:24:23. > :24:28.senses Sam is not quite at 100% physically. Earlier in the set, he

:24:29. > :24:36.took advantage of it, and gave it back. And Sam Querrey is battling

:24:37. > :24:43.hard, playing well, doing a lot of good things. A lot of good things.

:24:44. > :24:51.Showing that he is deserving to be out there. It wasn't a fluke that he

:24:52. > :24:55.has gotten this far. Second year in a row he is in the quarterfinals and

:24:56. > :25:00.looked to all the world like he was going to lose tomorrow. Turns out to

:25:01. > :25:05.be the biggest win of his life to give him the chance to get to a

:25:06. > :25:10.Wimbledon final. That is what his coach has been telling him the last

:25:11. > :25:14.couple of days. You can not ask for anything more than this chance. I

:25:15. > :25:19.hope he didn't take five seconds to look at the scores being flashed up

:25:20. > :25:23.on the scoreboard during the break, two came up, both featuring Croatian

:25:24. > :25:27.players in the veteran is Doubles and his former coach, Goran

:25:28. > :25:32.Ivanisevic, also in the veterans Doubles. They both lost. I don't

:25:33. > :26:11.think that will have a lot to do with the outcome of this.

:26:12. > :26:20.Sam hitting the ball extremely cleanly. Cilic is definitely...

:26:21. > :27:04.Wavering. Very tight right here. What a rally! What a winner at! It

:27:05. > :27:09.looked like Sam Querrey was going to come in and make him hit a passing

:27:10. > :27:17.shot. He chose not to, he took a little bit of the stress off Cilic.

:27:18. > :28:07.Stepping up when he needed to. Not wanting to be down 0-30.

:28:08. > :28:41.Well, he clobbered that. But he clobbered it wide.

:28:42. > :28:57.Hanging tough. Using his height again. Querrey has done it. Cilic,

:28:58. > :29:02.that shall slice out wide. -- short slice. You just have to guess with

:29:03. > :29:08.the pace and placement of these two guys. 250 aces between them in

:29:09. > :29:29.Wimbledon this year. Looking for how to decipher whether

:29:30. > :29:37.the serve is going to come. Toss being the obvious one. Study

:29:38. > :29:43.tendencies with the coaches, where did these guys like the serve? It is

:29:44. > :29:54.clear they can do anything they want.

:29:55. > :30:12.Well, at the moment, Querrey is hitting the ball like he was at the

:30:13. > :30:22.outset. And after that run of four or five games where he was always

:30:23. > :30:26.under threat on his serve... He is hanging on in a quite

:30:27. > :30:28.straightforward manner. The force Cilic the serve to stay in the set

:30:29. > :30:40.again. We anticipated this would be

:30:41. > :30:48.extremely close and we are getting what we hoped for and expected.

:30:49. > :30:51.These two guys, they have never been in this position before, with a

:30:52. > :30:57.chance to do something maybe Cilic thought could happen, Querrey

:30:58. > :31:01.certainly wondered if it would ever happen, getting to a Grand Slam

:31:02. > :31:07.semi, much less the chance of a final. You want to see both of them

:31:08. > :31:13.play up to their ability and it appears they have. Sam has been

:31:14. > :31:18.sharp, hitting the ball great. Cilic for the most part has also been

:31:19. > :31:26.hitting exceptionally well. Look at that beautiful view. The greatest

:31:27. > :31:30.city in the world, I'm sure you'd agree! I love London but I'm going

:31:31. > :31:39.to have to respectfully disagree! New York would be mine. They both

:31:40. > :31:42.have their attributes! This is an amazing complex. When is that Ruth

:31:43. > :31:53.ready on Court Number One? The year after. -- the year after next.

:31:54. > :31:57.Anticipation rising here in the crowd. They know this set will be

:31:58. > :32:07.over in the next couple of minutes. Really? Ten maximum! He has just

:32:08. > :32:28.predicted a break. I didn't say that!

:32:29. > :32:44.And this really is now about being calm in the eye of the storm. So

:32:45. > :32:51.quiet you can almost hear their hearts beating.

:32:52. > :32:56.I think it is not a partisan crowd so they are just loving the contest,

:32:57. > :33:18.the battle. Made it! Incredible shot! How did he

:33:19. > :34:55.make that? Federer like. Watch what happens here when it lands.

:34:56. > :35:04.Emphatically at 134 mph, his 19th ace of the match. The same position

:35:05. > :35:08.he talked about in the first set, more important for Querrey to pull

:35:09. > :35:20.out this breaker as it was way back when. Implications for him would be

:35:21. > :35:24.greater, tougher to overcome. He has not been there as often in this

:35:25. > :35:28.situation, he has never beaten Cilic. He has played a lot more

:35:29. > :36:04.tennis. He needed a good start there.

:36:05. > :36:38.That was a cannonball crosscourt forehand from Cilic. When he first

:36:39. > :36:48.hit the serve at 130, and that forehand around 100.

:36:49. > :36:55.They are going to give it everything they have right now, as they should.

:36:56. > :38:27.Go down guns blazing. 1-1, 6-6, 2-2. The perfect time for them to switch

:38:28. > :38:34.sides because both of them could use a breather after that. Querrey

:38:35. > :38:47.almost got this smash back, I don't know if that angle shows it. We know

:38:48. > :38:54.how you feel mate. Cilic peppering the back can all the way through

:38:55. > :39:19.that rally. But even a rally like that only gets you one point.

:39:20. > :39:33.APPLAUSE Some very, very clean ball striking,

:39:34. > :39:41.at an absolutely critical time. Both these guys, really. One error, one

:39:42. > :40:00.piece of brilliance, one bit of luck.

:40:01. > :40:15.There is the error. There is the error.

:40:16. > :40:22.He perhaps did not quite commit to that as he has on some other shots.

:40:23. > :40:41.And that really hurts, that one. He is a big baseball fan, Sam

:40:42. > :40:46.Querrey, and like a picture he just hurled a ball to the other end of

:40:47. > :40:55.the court because those two points, both on his serve, give Cilic three

:40:56. > :41:15.points for a two sets to one lead. -- like up pitcher.

:41:16. > :41:22.The roar from the Croat, he is one set away from a first Wimbledon

:41:23. > :41:47.final. It is always interesting why players

:41:48. > :41:52.play tennis in the first place. Cilic was actually born not in

:41:53. > :41:57.Croatia but Bosnia-Herzegovina and the whole town there did not have a

:41:58. > :42:02.single tennis court when he was growing up. When he was four years

:42:03. > :42:07.old, they suddenly put one in, and he was one of the very first people

:42:08. > :42:16.to ever play tennis on it, and here we are, 24 years later, with him six

:42:17. > :42:22.games away, maybe seven, from a Wimbledon final on Sunday afternoon.

:42:23. > :42:31.It is a point we have made several times as we look at these statistics

:42:32. > :42:37.from the third set. The early exit of Wawrinka and the defeat of Nadal

:42:38. > :42:42.and then Andy Murray going out to Sam Querrey, is that Cilic has had

:42:43. > :42:45.to Kohlschreiber, Florian Mayer, Steve Johnson, Roberto Bautista

:42:46. > :42:53.Agut, Gilles Muller. He has not had to play anybody ranked higher than

:42:54. > :42:58.the 16th seed which Muller was, in the last round, and he could not

:42:59. > :43:02.have imagined he could find himself with the opportunity of playing Sam

:43:03. > :43:06.Querrey in a Wimbledon semifinal for the chance to be out here on Centre

:43:07. > :43:16.Court in 48 hours' time. You can only beat the guys... That are put

:43:17. > :43:20.in front of you. Exactly right and that is what he has done and he has

:43:21. > :43:25.battled hard. There have been moments when this could have slipped

:43:26. > :43:30.away. Not only does he get that energy from winning the tie-break

:43:31. > :43:35.but he gets to go out and serve first so he will presumably take a

:43:36. > :43:46.lead right away. What have you got left, Sam, whatever you got left in

:43:47. > :43:47.the tank? -- what have you got left. Physically, emotionally, the effort

:43:48. > :44:07.he has given to get to this point... At least when he played Murray he

:44:08. > :44:15.could see he had really slowed down and was struggling to move but it is

:44:16. > :44:21.not the case with Cilic. The movement has been excellent, his

:44:22. > :44:25.intensity has been sky-high. And he can taste it. Mr Cilic is

:44:26. > :44:33.challenging the call on the left sideline, the ball was called out.

:44:34. > :44:40.It was a close call, 30-0 up on his serve. And he got the call. And

:44:41. > :44:58.Querrey shakes his head. And shrugs his shoulders.

:44:59. > :45:05.You can see Cilic keeping that intensity high. You better believe

:45:06. > :45:09.he is going to try to take it to Querrey right here and try to finish

:45:10. > :45:15.this big man from Southern California off. He thought he had to

:45:16. > :45:20.show a lot of hard to beat Murray and Anderson but he will have to

:45:21. > :45:30.find another gear to get to a Grand Slam final. Huge service game for

:45:31. > :45:34.Querrey here. And he knows it. Let's start like that. He is a little bit

:45:35. > :45:40.angry about how hasn't he was on those last couple of points on his

:45:41. > :45:44.serve in the tie-break, one backhand and one forehand but no mistake

:45:45. > :45:51.there, getting out a bit of frustration right now.

:45:52. > :46:03.Cilic's body language now is all positivity, he is prowling along the

:46:04. > :46:31.baseline like a big cat. Like a panther. Sam's heart skipped

:46:32. > :46:33.a beat then. It did! He had an open court and chose to let it go, not

:46:34. > :47:08.out by much. He took a deep breath before he hit

:47:09. > :47:18.that one. As well he should have. Get into this set. That is a good

:47:19. > :47:47.effort. At 30-30 then he could have been a

:47:48. > :47:50.bit jittery. But one finessed ace and one piledriver and we are all

:47:51. > :49:23.square. I think it is a good move by Sam to

:49:24. > :49:27.try to take it to Cilic when he gets a second serve opportunity. He just

:49:28. > :49:41.missed that, bad luck. He thought he had got that.

:49:42. > :50:06.That looked to be a little long, not called or challenged so he must've

:50:07. > :50:12.it hit some line. -- must have seen it. Querrey was 30-30 on his own

:50:13. > :50:23.serve in the last game and produced a couple of paces. Cilic looking to

:50:24. > :50:27.do the same. -- a couple of aces. Mr Cilic is challenging the call on the

:50:28. > :50:32.right fight sideline, the ball was called out. It was close, I thought

:50:33. > :50:53.Id missed by little bit but very close.

:50:54. > :51:06.How much of a boost would this be it Querrey could get this next point?

:51:07. > :51:23.Just when you thought he was taking an eight count on the canvas.

:51:24. > :51:44.And Cilic misses his first serve again.

:51:45. > :51:53.Just when you thought it was safe to go and put the kettle on! You have

:51:54. > :51:59.got to give a lot of credit to Querrey for pulling that break off

:52:00. > :52:03.early in the fourth. He just twisted things up once again! He was helped

:52:04. > :52:08.by Cilic missing so many first serves but you still have to make

:52:09. > :52:16.the most of it. No question, but nonetheless he does not waste a lot

:52:17. > :52:20.of emotional energy, clearly, and Cilic sensed that this thing could

:52:21. > :52:26.be over but you have still got to execute. And Querrey had some depth,

:52:27. > :52:32.he threw in a couple of different looks even though he missed that

:52:33. > :52:36.return at 15-15. It put a question in the mind of Cilic if he would do

:52:37. > :52:46.that again and he got hesitant and he just did not play a good game.

:52:47. > :52:52.Wow. I know! Where is this going now? Where is this match going? And

:52:53. > :52:58.of course if it did end up being in the fifth set... Another one of

:52:59. > :53:02.those marathons. We have been there before. It you have not been with us

:53:03. > :53:08.from the word go, the last time these guys met here at Wimbledon it

:53:09. > :53:13.was 17-15 in the fifth set in the second longest match ever played

:53:14. > :53:16.here. The first time they met was only 6-4 in the fifth, here at

:53:17. > :53:25.Wimbledon eight years ago. That is a very positive start from

:53:26. > :53:34.Cilic, though. Querrey will really want to

:53:35. > :54:05.consolidate that break right here. The quality of this tennis, after

:54:06. > :54:10.two and a half hours. Absolutely. Say thank you to these guys, they

:54:11. > :54:12.have been giving everything they have got and there has been some

:54:13. > :54:36.quality stuff. That is what you want to do if you

:54:37. > :54:51.see someone who is six feet six coming into the net. Get it low.

:54:52. > :55:02.Oh! I think that was long. Mr Cilic is challenging the call. It was not

:55:03. > :55:06.called and Cilic immediately challenged. It felt like he missed

:55:07. > :55:10.it. A lot closer than he wanted it to be. That was an unbelievable

:55:11. > :55:29.miss. That is a monstrous forehand from

:55:30. > :56:08.Querrey. That was a monstrous forehand from

:56:09. > :56:13.Cilic. It sure was. Unfortunately, it went too big, too close to the

:56:14. > :56:40.line when he did not really need to. APPLAUSE

:56:41. > :56:47.Well, I am sure those two ladies were saying, they didn't hit the

:56:48. > :56:59.ball like this in our day! That is a tremendous effort by

:57:00. > :57:08.Querrey, to get these last couple of games.

:57:09. > :57:23.is shameful Cilic. Mr Querrey is challenging the ball, the ball was

:57:24. > :57:29.called in. Are you strictly neutral in this matter? I would like to see

:57:30. > :57:34.an American guy, it has been a while for us to make a run and it would be

:57:35. > :57:39.a nice boost for the sport back in America. I respect Marin, I like

:57:40. > :57:51.him, I am happy they are both playing well. So that was no? You

:57:52. > :57:57.how ratings are! Is it better do have Murray in the finals here or

:57:58. > :57:59.Sam Querrey? A lot of people in the crowd hit would have been

:58:00. > :58:02.disappointed when they came today that there is no Andy or Rafa but

:58:03. > :58:06.what they have been given it an athlete treat with these guys

:58:07. > :58:23.playing to the best of their ability.

:58:24. > :58:29.And you still wouldn't put hardly any money, a couple of times, on the

:58:30. > :59:10.outcome. -- dimes. But of course Querrey knows that

:59:11. > :59:13.all, all being the operative word, he has to do is hold three service

:59:14. > :59:30.games and we will be going into a fifth set. That was a SWAT but a

:59:31. > :59:34.majestic swat. He has become quite the competitor over the years, he

:59:35. > :59:39.has learned to intensify his efforts. He had added subtlety to

:59:40. > :59:46.his game at times, ultimately it is about the power and he has always

:59:47. > :59:52.been a great ball striker. The crowd still eagerly awaiting the next

:59:53. > :59:56.match that will be played here. I expect while enjoying this. A lot of

:59:57. > :00:01.them will have taken up their position to watch Federer but

:00:02. > :00:05.actually now find themselves probably just cheering for one or

:00:06. > :00:15.the other for no obvious reason, they will just have latched on to

:00:16. > :00:26.Sam or Marin. And if you can't be here, it's great to be out there.

:00:27. > :00:31.Cilic is always first out after the change of ends, eager to get on with

:00:32. > :00:43.it. Querrey more measured. That delivery has certainly served

:00:44. > :00:53.him well over the course of this match. Cilic giving himself some

:00:54. > :01:03.more time by standing further back. But he has to cover more ground.

:01:04. > :01:14.Sam has done a good job using the geometry of the tennis court to his

:01:15. > :01:23.advantage to keep this so close. Another ball. That is a tall order.

:01:24. > :01:48.A smacked forehand from the baseline. Crosscourt.

:01:49. > :02:00.He made it last time. Cilic turf trying to make him work. Break him

:02:01. > :02:11.down physically if possible. Not giving up on a 40-0 point. -- just

:02:12. > :02:22.trying to make him work. Hoping if it goes to a fifth set it will

:02:23. > :02:25.finally catch up with Querrey. Only the second double fault of the match

:02:26. > :03:03.from Querrey. The stern looking face of Cilic at

:03:04. > :03:12.the moment. A small percentage in his mind must be thinking, I should

:03:13. > :03:21.almost be out of here by now. Why did I give up that early break here?

:03:22. > :03:28.Why did I hit that forehand quite as hard as voted the second break? It

:03:29. > :03:32.was right there for me. He has got to move past them. He was 4-1 up in

:03:33. > :04:35.that first set tie-break. APPLAUSE

:04:36. > :04:41.Comprehensive enough. But Querrey still in control.

:04:42. > :04:47.Service break. Leading 4-3. We will be back in centre in a moment. What

:04:48. > :04:53.we can show you what happened early in the semifinal of the ladies

:04:54. > :05:00.doubles. The number two seeds came through in straight sets. That is

:05:01. > :05:10.how they finished things off, 7-5, 6-2. They go to the ladies final on

:05:11. > :05:11.Sunday. They will play the winner of the match currently on Court number

:05:12. > :05:33.one over on BBC Two. That is over on BBC Two. Another

:05:34. > :05:46.very competitive semifinal. But we are heading back to Centre court.

:05:47. > :05:54.The onus is on Cilic to break Querrey in the next couple of

:05:55. > :05:58.service games the American has come otherwise we are heading to another

:05:59. > :06:08.set. The latest of the five set encounters between these two guys.

:06:09. > :06:23.Querrey would be fourth consecutive to get his first-ever grand slam

:06:24. > :06:33.final. And somebody somewhere, I know, is going through the record

:06:34. > :06:38.books at the moment. Aren't you, somebody? To see when the last time

:06:39. > :07:08.anybody won four consecutive matches to get a grand slam final.

:07:09. > :07:19.It was in the hitting zone. But you still have it to hit it. It is nice

:07:20. > :07:37.when you don't have to move. That ball hit the line. Froze

:07:38. > :07:46.Querrey. He was expecting the crosscourt ball. Now Querrey has a

:07:47. > :07:52.game on his hands. Chalk flew up. There you go. I've heard that

:07:53. > :08:00.somewhere. Brilliant, brilliant from Cilic.

:08:01. > :08:11.APPLAUSE Extremely awkward shot for Cilic.

:08:12. > :08:28.Right here. What do I do? Beautiful. Get the break point. Second serve.

:08:29. > :08:43.You know when Cilic has won a game. He lets the world know. Usually on

:08:44. > :08:49.to that type of thing. Rally behind. The more energising of the two.

:08:50. > :09:01.Querrey cannot believe that drop shot went in. And he has lost this

:09:02. > :09:08.game from 30-0. Not as close as he was to taking the fifth set. Not

:09:09. > :09:27.with those new balls. And now the force is with Cilic.

:09:28. > :09:41.Brilliant. And double brilliant. Do not count Querrey out yet. We have

:09:42. > :09:46.talked about these two playing up to their abilities. They sure have.

:09:47. > :09:51.That was some touch. It was an extremely tough shot to pull off.

:09:52. > :10:07.Who needs Rafael Nadal against Andy Murray? Oh! Goodness me. Querrey's

:10:08. > :10:12.anxiety, thanks to, frustration. As a courtesy to both players please

:10:13. > :10:18.switch off all mobile phones. That was a very truthful look from the

:10:19. > :11:08.American. If that had just crept over.

:11:09. > :12:37.The decibel count goes up on the Cilic side.

:12:38. > :12:51.Cilic looks to the box. And the box looked to Cilic. They just nod. A

:12:52. > :13:02.lot of positive encouragement, obviously, from the box. Cilic, you

:13:03. > :13:07.can emotionally hear his intensity. Only won one round in Australia.

:13:08. > :13:14.Gloucester 's next tournament to Justin Brown. It took him until he

:13:15. > :13:22.was in Istanbul in May when he was above 500 for the year. -- he lost

:13:23. > :13:31.his next tournament to Justin Brown. Look at him now. He won Istanbul.

:13:32. > :13:38.His least favourite surface, clay court. Did not do much in Madrid, or

:13:39. > :13:43.room. In the French he had his best. Final in Queens. Yes, he had match

:13:44. > :13:49.point. But this is everything you dream about. Especially with the

:13:50. > :13:55.rough start he had to endure. It all seems to have come together for him

:13:56. > :14:10.at the perfect time. His health, his belief, his draw... Came from the

:14:11. > :14:39.final. Sam Querrey with something to say about it, I suspect.

:14:40. > :14:49.Suddenly that sense of inevitability about a fifth set between these

:14:50. > :15:04.two... Is drifting towards the horizon.

:15:05. > :15:09.Some really clean ball striking by both guys. Querrey hanging tough as

:15:10. > :16:03.he has in the entire event. Querrey unsaved by the -- Querrey

:16:04. > :16:12.unfazed by the prospect of serving for the match. And still we go on.

:16:13. > :16:26.For all of the shrieks of encouragement and roars of

:16:27. > :17:37.encouragement, he just cannot shake off the pesky American.

:17:38. > :18:18.Measured and controlled. From Cilic. And he is one game away from the

:18:19. > :18:27.final. We could be two games away from a fifth set. You have paid your

:18:28. > :18:35.money. The pressure on Querrey again, though. There is no question

:18:36. > :18:40.about that. Having to work hard. This is why you saw there, Wendy

:18:41. > :18:45.said, you know, I am going to save myself for this next game. -- when

:18:46. > :18:52.you said. I need all of the energy can get to save for the next

:18:53. > :18:55.tie-break. Two players in the locker room getting edgier. Not knowing if

:18:56. > :19:03.they will be needed, expected out here. In the next ten, 15, 20

:19:04. > :19:08.minutes. Or if they have just sit back and wait another hour or so.

:19:09. > :19:11.Always a tricky one to follow. I imagine Roger is quite cool, whereas

:19:12. > :19:17.Tomas Berdych will be getting twitchy. I have seen him in many a

:19:18. > :19:22.locker room. The matter what happens it does not seem to affect him. I

:19:23. > :19:26.saw Cilic get blown out by Novak Djokovic the in semifinals at the

:19:27. > :19:37.Open. All ending in one hour and a half. He said, the crowd can see me

:19:38. > :19:55.soon. Let's see if Sam can hang tough and take this to a tie-break.

:19:56. > :20:33.Not the way you want to start off. Third double fault of the match.

:20:34. > :20:44.The line judge called it out, so did Cilic.

:20:45. > :21:08.Margins. Tiny margins. Cilic can smell the final.

:21:09. > :21:16.Querrey cast his eyes to the heavens.

:21:17. > :21:21.CHEERING Because after almost three hours,

:21:22. > :21:52.two match points. For Cilic. He got tight on that one. That is

:21:53. > :21:59.for sure. Popped a second chance. -- but a second chance. Got it.

:22:00. > :22:05.Piledriving winner, down the line, from Cilic. No man in the open era

:22:06. > :22:11.has ever needed so many attempts to reach his first Wimbledon final. But

:22:12. > :22:15.at the 11th time of asking, on Sunday afternoon, for Cilic,

:22:16. > :22:33.opportunity knocks. And perhaps in the end Querrey just

:22:34. > :22:37.ran out of gas. I think a little bit. He had a great, great

:22:38. > :22:42.tournament. He consistently dug deeper than I have ever seen him. He

:22:43. > :22:47.had tremendous resolve. He fought hard here. He played well. Just

:22:48. > :22:52.about as well as he could. I would have to think the legs went out on

:22:53. > :22:56.him just a little bit. Cilic keeping the pressure on. Cilic has had

:22:57. > :23:01.better results. He is a slightly better player and he proved that in

:23:02. > :23:06.the end. And we mentioned it about three hours ago that no number seven

:23:07. > :23:12.seed in the open era has ever got to the final of Wimbledon. So he has

:23:13. > :23:16.broken that hoodoo. Thank goodness. I know that was uppermost in all of

:23:17. > :23:30.your minds. Talking about going is that this

:23:31. > :23:44.-- talking about Goran Ivanisevic, he will need to keep going. You have

:23:45. > :23:51.to kill Roger 75 times in a match to beat him. Well, that is what Cilic

:23:52. > :23:57.will have to do if he is to face Roger Federer. For the moment it is

:23:58. > :24:06.about celebrating today. He won't think about that quite yet. Let him

:24:07. > :24:09.enjoy the moment. The game time will come to pass. Over the course of the

:24:10. > :24:14.evening. He will wake up tomorrow, do the same routine. It has been an

:24:15. > :24:25.amazing run. He is back in a grand slam final. We were able to witness

:24:26. > :24:31.and world-class tennis at the US Open. Cilic has a great smile. He is

:24:32. > :24:38.really charming, as well. And as the crowd disperses, we will be back in

:24:39. > :24:43.about ten, 15 minutes time as Tomas Berdych and Roger Federer take to

:24:44. > :24:48.Centre Court. They will know that after that four sets victory over

:24:49. > :24:53.Querrey, their opponent on Sunday afternoon here will be Cilic.

:24:54. > :25:00.After 11 attempts you are now a Wimbledon finalist. How does that

:25:01. > :25:04.sound? Unbelievable. Especially the way this tournament unfolded from

:25:05. > :25:08.the first one where I was playing great tennis. Today was a

:25:09. > :25:12.hard-fought battle. Sam played really high-level tennis, especially

:25:13. > :25:18.that first set. He was serving big. Hitting big from the back of the

:25:19. > :25:23.court. I had my chances. I was 4-1 up in the tie-break. I did not

:25:24. > :25:29.convert that. I felt I moved better on the return games. I was making

:25:30. > :25:34.him play more on his service games. Overall I felt the level was really

:25:35. > :25:37.high. You and Sam have fought some tremendous battles at Wimbledon over

:25:38. > :25:43.the years. Some pretty long ones, as well. Apart from how well you

:25:44. > :25:50.played, do you have a psychological advantage over him today to help you

:25:51. > :25:54.get the edge? -- did you have. I would not say so. Sam Cane out

:25:55. > :26:01.serving huge, hitting big. -- came out. He was playing really well stop

:26:02. > :26:06.that pushed me to play big tennis towards the end of the match. I was

:26:07. > :26:10.glad unlocking a little bit to get the break back in the fourth set. To

:26:11. > :26:16.get that advantage. To get back into the match. Your coach has said that

:26:17. > :26:20.you are a nice guy off court, you need to be meaner on court. Do you

:26:21. > :26:26.feel you are doing that, is it helping you? I feel I am positive on

:26:27. > :26:31.the court. That is important, I think. The way I am playing.

:26:32. > :26:34.Emotions are helping me a little bit. And with my team supporting me

:26:35. > :26:40.all the time, obviously, we've worked a lot on that. It is paying

:26:41. > :26:44.off big-time. Roger Federer spoke before the tournament about the fact

:26:45. > :26:48.you can go deep at Wimbledon this year. You could potentially face the

:26:49. > :26:55.final. Does it really matter who you meet on Sunday? It is definitely

:26:56. > :27:03.going to be a huge match between Roger and Tomas Berdych. Tomas

:27:04. > :27:07.Berdych is playing well. Roger is obviously playing his best tennis of

:27:08. > :27:11.his career on this court. It definitely feels like home. Whether

:27:12. > :27:16.it is going to be I will be ready, try to play my tennis, and focus on

:27:17. > :27:22.my own game. Many congratulations on making it through to the final.

:27:23. > :27:27.Thank you. A big smile from Cilic. They have had their long battles at

:27:28. > :27:32.Wimbledon. This was a mere two hours and 56 minutes. He mentioned his

:27:33. > :27:40.coach. Not only delighted with that celebration, but also delighted with

:27:41. > :27:42.the way that he raised the level of his players just in that final game

:27:43. > :27:47.to seal victory on his second match point. They rise to him. His team

:27:48. > :27:57.are delighted. Cilic is through to his first ever Wimbledon final. That

:27:58. > :28:03.is a celebration almost worthy of yours. That was back in the day when

:28:04. > :28:12.you did not have colour television. It was good to see him celebrating

:28:13. > :28:15.so much. Only he knows how much he has. Nowadays it is impossible

:28:16. > :28:19.without a great courage behind you. It is wonderful to see him

:28:20. > :28:23.acknowledge him. He raised the level of his play. He didn't want to to

:28:24. > :28:27.another tie-break let alone a fifth set. We said before that match

:28:28. > :28:31.started that the first set would be mighty important. They both played

:28:32. > :28:36.at a high level. Cilic had a chance in the first set when he was 4-1 up.

:28:37. > :28:40.We thought well if this is going to be Querrey's opportunity it is now

:28:41. > :28:44.to get his nose in front. But it showed the quality of Tennessee has

:28:45. > :28:49.been playing. He did not panic. He had his chances. -- the quality of

:28:50. > :28:52.tennis he has been playing. The tie-break was always going to be

:28:53. > :28:56.vital and he was able to come through. Talking about that third

:28:57. > :28:58.set tie-break, Cilic played well. We have picked up some points.

:28:59. > :29:01.set tie-break, Cilic played well. We have picked up some points. This was

:29:02. > :29:09.strong play from Cilic early on in this tie-break. Very much so. He

:29:10. > :29:14.kept putting Sam Corner to corner, making the big man from American

:29:15. > :29:19.move. That will always be an advantage when you are moving

:29:20. > :29:22.smoother on the court, and Cilic is tall himself. There were some

:29:23. > :29:28.wonderful rallies, even though there was some good serving, as well. To

:29:29. > :29:32.do that you have to get in position. Hitting corner to corner. The

:29:33. > :29:37.movement was pretty impressive, as well. We were wandering Cilic's

:29:38. > :29:41.tennis racket was over the net when he hit that. He got away with it.

:29:42. > :29:46.This is when Sam was serving. He loses brave service points from 4-3.

:29:47. > :29:51.That shot did not have much conviction. It was almost like he

:29:52. > :29:55.was wanting to hit the back and down the line then follow up in the net.

:29:56. > :30:05.You cannot come back from that, can you? It just started to look like it

:30:06. > :30:10.was fading. His legs were heavier. Some are recovering. Credit to him,

:30:11. > :30:15.he came back. We saw a new side of Querrey. Sam is a fighter. Not the

:30:16. > :30:19.sunny California guy. He showed something and he should be proud of

:30:20. > :30:22.it, he beat Andy Murray in the quarterfinal, he just played a

:30:23. > :30:27.semifinal. That is the way he should continue. Get ready for his home

:30:28. > :30:31.grand slam. Cilic is looking dangerous, isn't he? We have known

:30:32. > :30:37.that for a few years since the US Open. It is the unpredictability for

:30:38. > :30:40.me. He can be erratic. When he is on, that is when he is dangerous,

:30:41. > :30:44.because he has big weapons and he can impose his style of play. A

:30:45. > :30:47.question over whether he can keep that consistency going against the

:30:48. > :30:52.winner of the next match. Absolutely. We talked about the big

:30:53. > :30:56.surf the big forehand, as well. We were talking about some of his

:30:57. > :31:02.rallies. -- the biggest serve. He has a big wing span.

:31:03. > :31:09.He does not mind rallying from the baseline, even slicing the backhand

:31:10. > :31:13.and come in behind it and that makes him versatile and dangerous. To win

:31:14. > :31:16.the US Open you have to have a lot more than just a big serve. We have

:31:17. > :31:24.been waiting for this breakthrough in awake for Marin. -- in our way.

:31:25. > :31:29.He has a great grass court record and we always felt he had a bit more

:31:30. > :31:34.game. Absolutely. This was Cilic, just wonderful hitting, from both

:31:35. > :31:37.sides, we have to pay credit to Sam Querrey as well

:31:38. > :31:43.it is a big part of the men's game. You talk about the domination of the

:31:44. > :31:47.serve but they do a good job of getting back into the rally and

:31:48. > :31:53.trying to neutralise things and then it becomes a baseline exchange. As

:31:54. > :31:56.with a lot of guys, it is going to be about Berdych Federer, if they

:31:57. > :32:00.can get on the offence and that is what Cilic did better in the

:32:01. > :32:03.baseline exchanges, he was the one who was able to hit the corners and

:32:04. > :32:09.create an opportunity to move forward. That extra aggression in a

:32:10. > :32:13.big match is what can pay off and it did for Cilic. It is beginning to

:32:14. > :32:21.fill up in Centre Court, it is buzzing outside on semifinal stage

:32:22. > :32:25.-- on men's semifinals day. There was only one man left standing of

:32:26. > :32:26.the big four in men's tennis and it is the man with the most impressive

:32:27. > :33:21.numbers. that is the scene out on the hill.

:33:22. > :33:25.He is a record-breaking machine, isn't he? He certainly is, you go

:33:26. > :33:29.through the numbers and it is amazing what he has achieved. We

:33:30. > :33:32.reflected this time last year with his knee injury and taking six

:33:33. > :33:38.months off and how long it would take him to recover from, and then

:33:39. > :33:41.winning in Australia. But behind the scenes he is so relaxed. I was in

:33:42. > :33:46.the locker room with him an hour and a half ago and he was there playing

:33:47. > :33:52.basketball, practising his putting, watching stupid things on you Tube!

:33:53. > :33:56.I want do you not think you should focus a bit! That is the way he has

:33:57. > :34:02.always been. He will have his game face by now, but he is has a very

:34:03. > :34:06.stress free existence. When you play that way and you're hitting the ball

:34:07. > :34:09.as sweetly as he does you don't have any worries. He should not be

:34:10. > :34:14.worried but everybody has their own routine, some players set themselves

:34:15. > :34:20.awake. Novak and Andy keep to themselves, Roger is the opposite.

:34:21. > :34:24.The jokes around and so forth, also fought his way of overcoming the

:34:25. > :34:27.nerves. You must be nervous as well, he is human, it means a lot to him

:34:28. > :34:32.otherwise he would not be playing that is how stays relaxed and he is

:34:33. > :34:35.doing a good job. And when you said he took time off, we wondered if

:34:36. > :34:40.that was the last we would see of him. He was having holidays but

:34:41. > :34:46.doing some serious training. Absolutely. And every aspect of his

:34:47. > :34:50.game and his life he get spot on and the scheduling is important. After

:34:51. > :34:53.Wimbledon, speaking to his knee specialist, they said you are

:34:54. > :34:58.looking at three months to get away from things and get it absolutely

:34:59. > :34:58.sorted so you have the chance of continuing your career. Here they

:34:59. > :35:27.come. So he is back on the court he loves,

:35:28. > :35:32.Roger Federer, up against Tomas Berdych. Not an easy matter, Berdych

:35:33. > :35:37.is one of the hardest hitters on tour. Very much so, as much as we'd

:35:38. > :35:42.respect Roger's accolades over the years, he has a match on his hands.

:35:43. > :35:45.Tomas Berdych beat him before, he is an accomplished grass court player

:35:46. > :35:50.and a Wimbledon finalist himself and the type of player that Bob is Roger

:35:51. > :35:54.because he takes time awake. If you give Roger time he will toy with

:35:55. > :36:02.you. If you take it away, even he struggled at times and that is what

:36:03. > :36:04.Berdych as to do, be the first man to take the initiative away and

:36:05. > :36:07.start dictating rallies and it is easier but it is the only way you

:36:08. > :36:10.have a chance. So how do you take the initiative away? It is something

:36:11. > :36:14.I expected to see a lot more from rabbits when he played in the

:36:15. > :36:18.previous round against Federer -- from Milos Raonic. Obviously the

:36:19. > :36:22.serve is your first opportunity, you have to be aggressive and hopefully

:36:23. > :36:26.have a high percentage drop but from the back of the court you got to

:36:27. > :36:30.take the ball early and Berdych hit the ball flat and that means it will

:36:31. > :36:34.go through the court quicker. He can try to push Federer back but if he

:36:35. > :36:39.is playing slower balls with slides, that is when Federer can attack from

:36:40. > :36:42.both wings. For Berdych, he has do have the mindset that I have nothing

:36:43. > :36:46.to lose, I'm playing the greatest player in the history of this

:36:47. > :36:51.tournament and maybe in the whole game. I have had a great tournament.

:36:52. > :36:56.If I'm going out, I have to live and die by the sword. I hope he can be

:36:57. > :36:59.aggressive and try to make life difficult for Federer. Federer has

:37:00. > :37:06.not dropped a set not just in this tournament but in Halle as well so

:37:07. > :37:10.easier said than done. I was going to say he is on the run of his life

:37:11. > :37:14.but his life is always like this so it is nothing unusual! And another

:37:15. > :37:19.point in his favour, it is his court and his crowd and players get

:37:20. > :37:22.intimidated. They walk slower and played slow and by the time they are

:37:23. > :37:27.playing normal they are down by two sets to one like Milos Raonic was.

:37:28. > :37:31.Berdych has been here before and needs to put away the fact that he's

:37:32. > :37:35.playing Roger Federer. He only has to seed there is a player on the

:37:36. > :37:43.other side and pretend it is not Wimbledon! -- he has to see the

:37:44. > :37:48.player. He does have that champion's aura, Federer. He does. When you

:37:49. > :37:52.play Federer, every game is a home game for him because he is so

:37:53. > :37:56.popular. It was almost reflected in the previous match, it was kind of

:37:57. > :38:01.like, this is an important semifinal but we are waiting to watch Federer!

:38:02. > :38:04.Now he is out there, the scent of expectation, you can see the crowd

:38:05. > :38:08.coming back in and getting ready for this one -- sense of expectation.

:38:09. > :38:23.And the serve of Federer, we have been looking at the

:38:24. > :38:25.stats from his match against Milos Raonic and in the very first set,

:38:26. > :38:29.you look at him hitting the corners, one side and the other. I guess that

:38:30. > :38:31.is what he does, he has great placement. It is his foundation. He

:38:32. > :38:33.does not waste any energy and time and he frustrates the other player

:38:34. > :38:37.because you can't touch the return. By the time you look at it you are

:38:38. > :38:44.down a set and a break. He has a very smooth motion. He really lift

:38:45. > :38:49.his legs up when he is serving and actually serves from about six feet

:38:50. > :38:55.five, a bit like the size of his opponent, and that is where he gets

:38:56. > :39:01.it right. That is just two feet from the line, 0% in the deuce court. For

:39:02. > :39:06.the top guys the green area should be closer to a foot or 18 inches but

:39:07. > :39:10.when you see him hitting it like that, in the first two sets against

:39:11. > :39:13.Raonic he only lost three points behind his first serve and it is

:39:14. > :39:17.difficult to play against obviously do when your opponent is holding

:39:18. > :39:19.serve so easily but it puts enormous pressure on your own server because

:39:20. > :39:24.you are thinking that if you drop serve want in a set that is probably

:39:25. > :39:28.going to beat the set over. It is to raise it and put pressure on the

:39:29. > :39:33.opponent's sir, returning well and also holding his own. We cannot find

:39:34. > :39:38.fault with his game but the forehand has been winning a lot of points.

:39:39. > :39:41.From every part of the court. I think his whole ground stroke game

:39:42. > :39:46.has improved so much in the last year. He tries to take the ball much

:39:47. > :39:50.earlier and stay on the line and if he is behind he goes right back onto

:39:51. > :39:57.it, always staying on the pedal. We does not let the other guy breeze,

:39:58. > :40:03.he mixing run and for and anybody to have a chance, you have to make the

:40:04. > :40:08.35-year-old run! He was 3-0 down in this tie-break and then the forehand

:40:09. > :40:13.took over and it was like a forehand rampage. This was the one, a great

:40:14. > :40:16.approach from Raonic and then... He was covering up the line and he was

:40:17. > :40:24.in the right place and he still got beaten. You can see the arc he has

:40:25. > :40:28.got on the ball, to swerve it back into the court, having been down 3-0

:40:29. > :40:34.and a double break, that was the shot that won him the tie-break. We

:40:35. > :40:39.think of Raonic as being a big hitter but is Tomas even bigger? I

:40:40. > :40:44.think Raonic on a good day, yes, but he was intimidated and did not play

:40:45. > :40:49.like last year. Berdych is as big a hit, maybe even with a bigger

:40:50. > :40:51.backhand. Berdych does not have to run around his, he can stay in the

:40:52. > :40:58.middle of the court and ticket early on both wings. -- take it early.

:40:59. > :41:05.Berdych has the big serve, and I think he believes again now. For his

:41:06. > :41:10.sake certainly he has had a great tournament and he does not want to

:41:11. > :41:15.rest on his laurels now. He is another hugely imposing opponent,

:41:16. > :41:20.6'5", very strong and muscular. He has weapons on both sides from the

:41:21. > :41:26.back of the court because he drives his backhand well and can hit it

:41:27. > :41:30.flat through the court. The areas he asked to look at are the first

:41:31. > :41:34.serve, keeping the percentage high, if he gets any looks at second

:41:35. > :41:37.certainly has to be aggressive and take it early and push Federer back

:41:38. > :41:41.and the more time he gives in, the more running he will have to do.

:41:42. > :41:43.That is Berdych. Phil Jones can tell us more about this big hitting

:41:44. > :41:52.player from the Czech Republic. There is going under the radar in a

:41:53. > :41:57.tournament and then there is stealth, Tomas Berdych style. He

:41:58. > :42:01.stand in the semifinals strangely unnoticed until now. Even when his

:42:02. > :42:06.chance came to show his Wimbledon worse, a quarter final against

:42:07. > :42:12.three-time champion, Novak Djokovic, it proved a huge anti-climax. It is

:42:13. > :42:16.it? I think he has devoted. That is hugely disappointing for everybody

:42:17. > :42:21.but they will understand, the 12 time Grand Slam champion does not do

:42:22. > :42:26.that lightly. Pretty much from the beginning I felt there was something

:42:27. > :42:30.is not usual with him. And the speed of the ball from him was not coming

:42:31. > :42:35.the way you are used to but still, it is no back, and when he decides

:42:36. > :42:38.to go on court, he will commit to fight. It is not the best way to go

:42:39. > :42:45.through but it is sport and I everything. Denied the euphoria that

:42:46. > :42:49.normally goes with a quarterfinal victory, Berdych is at least

:42:50. > :42:53.physically fresh and Roger Federer will ignore the 11th seeded player

:42:54. > :43:01.at his peril. Berdych beat him en route to the final in 2010. Federer

:43:02. > :43:07.is beaten. It is the winner of this young man's Korea, the making of

:43:08. > :43:11.Tomas Berdych. But defeat for Federer is the exception rather than

:43:12. > :43:14.the rule against Berdych. He has won 18 of their 24 career classes

:43:15. > :43:20.including twice this year. I played him in the Austrian Open, I got

:43:21. > :43:25.killed, and in Miami, I had a Matt Boyd and I lost. Now let's make the

:43:26. > :43:29.third one -- a match point. I hope it will be a good one and probably

:43:30. > :43:36.the best player right now. And with the form and the way of playing. I

:43:37. > :43:43.think that is the biggest challenge for me and I'm looking forward to

:43:44. > :43:47.it. And briefly, Boris, the fact he had a match point against Roger in

:43:48. > :43:50.Miami he has to remember it. It should give him reason to be

:43:51. > :43:55.confident, to go out and believe he can win. Boris and Tim, thank you,

:43:56. > :43:58.they are ready to go and we are ready for this second men's

:43:59. > :44:01.semifinal here at Wimbledon and Tim and Boris are on their way to the

:44:02. > :44:07.commentary box to join Andrew Castle.

:44:08. > :44:12.ANDREW CASTLE: The 35-year-old Roger Federer has not dropped a set yet,

:44:13. > :44:17.92 tournament victories, and he still loves the game also he first

:44:18. > :44:23.played with that man, his father Robert who is up in the players box,

:44:24. > :44:28.watching his son proudly once again. Tomas Berdych has his whole crew as

:44:29. > :44:33.well. He has been to at least the semifinals of all the Grand Slams

:44:34. > :44:37.now. He has beaten Federer on this stage before. A warm welcome for a

:44:38. > :45:59.former finalist. TIM HENMAN: One thing we did not

:46:00. > :46:03.touch on, Boris, was movement. We talk about the attacking skills of

:46:04. > :46:06.the top players but they all defend well and the defensive skills of

:46:07. > :46:49.Berdych could definitely be tested today.

:46:50. > :47:11.BORIS BECKER: Not by much, a brave attacking backhand from Berdych.

:47:12. > :47:18.Likely to be a fair amount of support early on in this match for

:47:19. > :47:19.Tomas Berdych. Federer comes in as such a heavy favourite, people would

:47:20. > :47:45.love to see a match here. Berdych could not have hit that

:47:46. > :47:56.approach shot much deeper but he still got past. --

:47:57. > :48:31.Stefan Edberg in the coaching box next to his mum. And on the left was

:48:32. > :49:18.a former French player. Close. To getting his first break of

:49:19. > :49:22.the match. Remember Berdych has not played on this court yet. It is so

:49:23. > :49:50.different than any other court in the world.

:49:51. > :49:59.This is some heavy hitting from Berdych, he will perhaps have to do

:50:00. > :50:06.this for three hours or more. Mum, Hannah, back right, dad Martin in

:50:07. > :50:11.the middle. And that is Esther, they will be celebrating the second

:50:12. > :50:21.anniversary on Sunday. That is a good effort. Under pressure.

:50:22. > :50:27.Does the head to head matter a great deal in this? It has been a long

:50:28. > :50:31.time for Berdych seven matches in a row he has lost to Federer although

:50:32. > :50:36.he has beaten him here. He is aware of it and we touched on Miami where

:50:37. > :50:40.he had match point, obviously on a different surface, but Berdych has

:50:41. > :50:45.won on six occasions so he knows he can beat him and he has beaten him

:50:46. > :50:49.on this court. All that is in the past, he has to come out and deliver

:50:50. > :50:53.the goods today. It shows that both players are veterans and they know

:50:54. > :50:54.each other's game inside out and the beauty is they have beating each

:50:55. > :50:59.other before. -- beaten each other. Let's see how

:51:00. > :51:21.Berdych handles the Federer serve. They have played each other 24 times

:51:22. > :51:27.but I watched them practice the Thursday before the tournament on

:51:28. > :51:37.one of the outside courts. I have to say, Federer... He was getting the

:51:38. > :51:42.better of those exchanges. With a twinkle in your high-tech

:51:43. > :53:34.Beautiful exchange, Federer trying to move Berdych from side to side

:53:35. > :54:13.with the approach shot was a bit too much in the middle.

:54:14. > :54:21.Dad Martin was a train engineer in the Czech Republic. And when being a

:54:22. > :54:29.train engineer in the Czech Republic was tough work.

:54:30. > :54:38.His son has done a good job in holding on here in the first couple

:54:39. > :54:46.of service games. A struggle in the first game and saved a break point

:54:47. > :54:55.so a good start for him, 2-1. He is from the eastern side of the Czech

:54:56. > :55:02.Republic. He comes from the same place as Milan Baros, the former

:55:03. > :55:07.Liverpool footballer. His mum was a doctor, his dad was a train

:55:08. > :55:10.engineer. This is not a man who is out there to entertain and sometimes

:55:11. > :55:15.these big men get a hard time in the press that there are not telling

:55:16. > :55:19.jokes like Goran Ivanisevic in the old days but he is a workman on

:55:20. > :55:25.court, Boris. Very much so, different family background. Born a

:55:26. > :55:31.long way behind the Iron Curtain and the upbringing was very different to

:55:32. > :55:36.if you were raised in England or Germany or America and also his

:55:37. > :55:39.personality, very hard-working and disciplined and dedicated, a true

:55:40. > :55:46.professional. But that means at the same time he is not a storyteller,

:55:47. > :55:53.he is not a jokester, nor should he be because he wants to be a great

:55:54. > :55:56.tennis player. The crowd are all coming back in after the first

:55:57. > :56:01.semifinal, this is the second with Federer serving at 1-2, not waiting

:56:02. > :56:10.for the crowd to settle, just getting on with this semifinal.

:56:11. > :56:17.We have seen quite a lot in Federer's matches, he likes to start

:56:18. > :56:22.with that slow one out wide indeed deuce box and by what wonder if the

:56:23. > :56:25.players should cover that more. It depends if they have done their

:56:26. > :56:26.homework, normally you would study the night before with your coaching

:56:27. > :56:42.team. Nowadays they have everything in

:56:43. > :57:03.technology. You can Google up! Google up.

:57:04. > :57:14.He continues to do what he has been doing so well throughout the

:57:15. > :57:19.championship are holding serve easily. He has not dropped a set so

:57:20. > :57:23.far. We saw Rafer Nadal doing the same thing at the French Open. The

:57:24. > :57:29.only has dropped his serve three times in the tournament so far. --

:57:30. > :57:34.he only has dropped. That was Tony Godsick on the left-hand side, a bit

:57:35. > :57:51.of ambush marketing! There is not any more famous via's

:57:52. > :57:55.box. If you are a tennis fan watching anywhere now right in the

:57:56. > :57:59.world. This gentleman won the tournament four times, the great Rod

:58:00. > :58:21.Laver. If you want to promote something, now is the time!

:58:22. > :58:33.How fast was that recovery by Federer? Turning defence into

:58:34. > :58:35.attack. I have to check his passport, I don't believe he is 35!

:58:36. > :59:25.He runs like he is 25! If you want to have a chance against

:59:26. > :59:28.the great man from Switzerland you have to make him run. It does not

:59:29. > :01:09.mean you can win the point easily though.

:01:10. > :01:19.You know what we are seeing here. The constant feeling of pressure

:01:20. > :02:05.building. Up to the job so far. Just hanging on.

:02:06. > :02:13.Federer doing such a great job of biding his time with a slice

:02:14. > :02:22.backhand. Landed right on the baseline. Really checked up. Berdych

:02:23. > :02:27.not in the right position. Berdych has only faced 12 break point in the

:02:28. > :02:30.tournament prior to this match. He has faced two in three service games

:02:31. > :02:55.here. Well done, Berdych, again. A

:02:56. > :03:02.surprising missive from Federer on the forehand side. Going over the

:03:03. > :03:09.lower side of the net. Impressive return from Federer, as well. Deep.

:03:10. > :03:20.Tomas did well to fight that one off.

:03:21. > :03:28.Berdych happy to direct his attack given a choice. To the Federer

:03:29. > :03:33.forehand, it seems. Same strategy. He serves the first one wide. Roger

:03:34. > :03:54.blocks it back. Then he goes for the forehand to control the point.

:03:55. > :04:08.He has had to play 25 points on his serve so far. Sharing the evidence,

:04:09. > :04:15.he is panting quite heavily, feeling the work. -- showing. It is a bit of

:04:16. > :04:21.hard work playing Federer on Centre Court, up to five? If you get up to

:04:22. > :04:25.five. CHUCKLES

:04:26. > :04:39.He got lucky. Federer has had his fair share so far, really. A little

:04:40. > :04:51.help from the net. Nothing Berdych could do about this one, though.

:04:52. > :05:11.Third break point against the Berdych serve.

:05:12. > :05:26.Wow. It's just unbelievable, isn't it? It's almost like he has got

:05:27. > :05:32.three tennis rackets and he is throwing everyone of them at the

:05:33. > :05:37.ball. It's incredible. Berdych is playing great. Defending everyone.

:05:38. > :05:41.But Federer out the anti-everytime. He said it was a wonderful

:05:42. > :05:46.opportunity, Berdych, to play the greatest of them all. It is a great

:05:47. > :05:59.challenge to play Roger Federer. -- but Federer has upped the ante every

:06:00. > :06:05.time. We have isolated some of this play. Tim, have played him. You need

:06:06. > :06:08.good footwork, certainly on a grass court. You cannot always have the

:06:09. > :06:17.perfect balance. Houston he keeps his head on so many shots. -- how

:06:18. > :06:22.still he keeps his head. This is wonderful. 35. Happy to take plenty

:06:23. > :06:26.of time off to take rest. But when he is moving like this to play the

:06:27. > :06:31.ball, it is a rather aesthetically pleasing thing to watch. And you

:06:32. > :06:40.sometimes feel with his age that early on in a set, or tournament, it

:06:41. > :06:43.might take him a bit longer to find his rhythm. But he comes out in a

:06:44. > :06:50.big match. There is no going through the gears. It is straight to the top

:06:51. > :06:56.gear and he starts dominating. I just wonder what top gear is. Cars

:06:57. > :07:03.used to be 50, then you talk about six gear, then Formula 1 cars

:07:04. > :07:21.probably have about eight, nine. He keeps lifting them. -- cars used to

:07:22. > :07:27.have fifth gear, then you talk about sixth gear. Talking about Formula 1,

:07:28. > :07:34.Nico Rosberg is in the crowd. Is this an exhibition, or is it the

:07:35. > :07:37.semifinals of Wimbledon? Because it is the semifinals at Wimbledon he

:07:38. > :07:46.has got himself into the zone early. Dangerous. He does not want to give

:07:47. > :07:50.his opponent the slightest of hope. It is rough for Berdych. Because he

:07:51. > :07:54.has played well. He has come out, timed the ball, been aggressive.

:07:55. > :07:58.They have been on court for 22 minutes, but it seems like 18

:07:59. > :08:05.minutes of it has been Berdych serving. Look at how he is sweating.

:08:06. > :08:11.He has had to change his shirt. And it's quite a cold Friday afternoon.

:08:12. > :08:34.Just 22 minutes. It is a boiling hot summer day for us.

:08:35. > :08:44.That is outstanding. That has to be one of the worst shots he has ever

:08:45. > :08:51.hit. It is always good to have these to remind him. Gutsy for him to try

:08:52. > :09:12.it. That is how much confidence he has. Anything.

:09:13. > :09:22.Venus feeling it now. I thought he was good against Milos Raonic on

:09:23. > :09:41.Wednesday, but he is better today. -- he is feeling it now.

:09:42. > :09:47.Berdych has put his head down. Continue the best he can. This is

:09:48. > :10:11.three out of five sets. There you go. Average service game

:10:12. > :10:17.one minute for Federer. Berdych, half a marathon. Boris thinks that

:10:18. > :11:20.is great. CHUCKLES

:11:21. > :12:22.The return was lucky, but there wasn't any luck in this.

:12:23. > :12:29.He continues to do well, Berdych. He is down a break. Not only the single

:12:30. > :12:40.break. Second semifinal at Wimbledon.

:12:41. > :12:47.Lendl one of his other countrymen to reach the final. 1973 was the

:12:48. > :12:52.boycott year. He comes into this match absolutely ready, he says.

:12:53. > :12:57.Could not be in a better position after that Novak Djokovic

:12:58. > :13:11.retirement. Close matches. But well rested. We know. Is that a picture

:13:12. > :13:16.of Novak Djokovic each on his shoes? Is that an imprint after he kicked

:13:17. > :13:23.him out in the previous round? That was his parting gift. He gave them

:13:24. > :13:27.to Tomas. I wish I could have been playing better, but at least you can

:13:28. > :13:35.play my shoes. Do you think Rafael Nadal gave Sumter Federer? I highly

:13:36. > :13:42.doubt that. -- gave some to Federer. He is not out of it. Such a big

:13:43. > :13:48.hitter. He thumps the ball. New balls, which will change the game up

:13:49. > :14:10.a little bit. Does he go back out wide again?

:14:11. > :14:20.The interesting twist is that it is Federer won 92% of first serves and

:14:21. > :14:31.100% on second serves. -- the interesting statistic. Just a bit of

:14:32. > :14:40.an advantage. There goes that one, Boris. Yes. What it illustrates is

:14:41. > :14:51.how hard it is to get into a rally with somebody who moves and hits

:14:52. > :15:12.like Federer. First serve percentage is at 80%.

:15:13. > :15:21.That is difficult to do. He makes it look like buttering toast. Good

:15:22. > :15:25.tennis from Berdych. If you want to be critical, the approach shot was

:15:26. > :15:32.too short. But it is just the consistency of Federer. Big return.

:15:33. > :16:14.30-30. That is half a chance. Looks to me the seventh double fault

:16:15. > :16:15.only for Federer in this tournament. The first of this match confirmed by

:16:16. > :16:47.some margin. After serving a double fault at

:16:48. > :16:50.30-30, then to hit a second serve, down break point. 109 mph into the

:16:51. > :17:28.corner. Wonderful shot. It is a very good

:17:29. > :17:34.first serve. You mentioned it, Berdych really isn't backing up.

:17:35. > :17:46.Talking about the big muscles getting involved in that.

:17:47. > :18:13.And get a break point just because he can. -- gets a break point.

:18:14. > :18:42.He has had a lot of strong ground strokes deepening up the middle.

:18:43. > :18:53.Serving with new balls. For Federer to lose on his serve, if that is the

:18:54. > :19:02.case... Yes, this is unusual indeed. That double fault closes out the

:19:03. > :19:06.game. There is a silent on Centre Court as his progress is halted. For

:19:07. > :19:11.the sake of the match it may not be a bad thing. Credit where credit is

:19:12. > :19:14.due, Berdych has played a strong game. Created the opportunities. He

:19:15. > :21:14.was gifted that break point. Yes, he can, Boris. Just after five

:21:15. > :21:18.o'clock local time. It has been pretty much one-way traffic. A

:21:19. > :21:24.fantastic passage of play for Berdych, who has been here before.

:21:25. > :21:29.You can tell. A shift of momentum. Federer was in the driving seat. The

:21:30. > :21:36.question was by how much he would win the first set. All of a sudden,

:21:37. > :21:42.new balls, a little bit different, Berdych jumped on a couple of

:21:43. > :21:48.Federer's serves. He was gifted, certainly, by some double faults,

:21:49. > :21:53.breaking the Federer serve. He broke Federer and Novak Djokovic, but lost

:21:54. > :21:59.to Rafael Nadal, nervously, in the final of 2010. But he has vast

:22:00. > :22:02.experience now at the age of 31. It is great to see him on this stage

:22:03. > :22:10.producing his best tennis. Because he had a lock to resist there. Now

:22:11. > :22:19.what from Federer? -- a lot to resist.

:22:20. > :23:06.Serving to stay in this first set, Federer.

:23:07. > :23:12.Most people in here, thought that was going miles out. If they hit

:23:13. > :23:15.something like that at the club it would be going out. But watch the

:23:16. > :23:56.talks in --. Watch the top-spin. Just a small lapse of concentration.

:23:57. > :24:03.Slightly overconfident from Federer. It cost him the serve. But it is

:24:04. > :25:08.back to square one, 5-5. Pretend nothing happened.

:25:09. > :25:15.I was concerned about Berdych's defensive skills, but he has done a

:25:16. > :25:33.great job fighting off those shots from Federer in those rallies.

:25:34. > :25:46.That could be a costly error. It is a bit like a golfer missing a four

:25:47. > :25:47.foot putt. I do not think the bounce was as bad as Berdych made out

:25:48. > :26:17.there. His third challenge of the first

:26:18. > :26:21.set. Federer has no challenges remaining. He will get another

:26:22. > :26:44.challenge if we go to a tie-break. Set up nicely with the big first

:26:45. > :26:46.serve, 127 mph. And with all of the time he needed. Cannot afford to

:26:47. > :27:08.miss those. To the line. I was going to say that

:27:09. > :27:20.I saw Chalke, but they don't have that any more. They call it titanium

:27:21. > :27:21.pigment. I prefer chalk. It is better. Especially when John McEnroe

:27:22. > :27:51.is talking about chalk flying up. It is a tactic Federer has used a

:27:52. > :27:56.lot in this tournament. He did it against steroid, Milos Raonic, and

:27:57. > :28:11.against a big man to go straight at them. Good tactic. -- he did it

:28:12. > :28:19.against Zverev. It is a way to save a couple of break points. The stun

:28:20. > :28:45.gun says 130, but it sounded like 150.

:28:46. > :29:01.I don't think it is that difficult to the crowd want to win -- to work

:29:02. > :29:12.out who the crowd want to win. That is fantastic, isn't it? Well done.

:29:13. > :29:17.Once again, Tomas Berdych. 6-5 first set. He went down a break. He broke

:29:18. > :29:22.when Federer was using the new balls. Now Federer has to serve to

:29:23. > :29:27.stay in the first set. He has no challenges remaining. That could yet

:29:28. > :29:30.be key. He has been quoted as saying that having all of the experience in

:29:31. > :29:35.the world, which he has come is one thing, but he wants to play like an

:29:36. > :29:38.18-year-old sometimes. We saw it earlier with that errant drop shot.

:29:39. > :29:44.He wants to play all of the shots he wants to play. Sometimes he would

:29:45. > :29:49.not like to be so experienced, he would like to play with experience.

:29:50. > :29:55.Berdych sending this one off, or doing his best. But he is hanging in

:29:56. > :30:01.there. Good job. He did well to get a tennis racket on this. No word on

:30:02. > :30:09.Andy Murray, is there? Any word about any scams? No. Fingers

:30:10. > :30:13.crossed. I'm sure in the next couple of days, or certainly soon, he will

:30:14. > :30:21.be seeing a specialist to find out what the problem is. We hope he

:30:22. > :30:26.makes a speedy recovery. And Novak Djokovic, who pulled out with a bad

:30:27. > :31:27.shoulder when he was playing against Milos Raonic.

:31:28. > :31:35.He could have done more with that point. Lucky with the net cord, and

:31:36. > :31:44.had another pretty open forehand. Just over hit it.

:31:45. > :31:49.You don't get many chances against Federer, and the one or two you get,

:31:50. > :32:09.you have to use them. Tie-break to decide the set. It

:32:10. > :32:24.seems like a fair outcome. Federer gets his challenge.

:32:25. > :32:33.I feel this tie-break is more important for Berdych van for

:32:34. > :32:55.Federer. -- more important for Berdych than it is for Federer.

:32:56. > :33:04.He is just pounding the forehand side. Berdych seems to be going to

:33:05. > :33:06.the Federer forehand a lot, and if you are going to do that, you have

:33:07. > :33:17.to go with strength. I think that was a clear tactical

:33:18. > :34:29.masterplan here. He gets the point the old-fashioned

:34:30. > :35:43.way, backhand approach, volley winner.

:35:44. > :35:47.Precision does it. Not necessarily the speed, but aiming it right into

:35:48. > :36:18.the corner. Couldn't get that ball up and down

:36:19. > :36:25.quick enough. Forehand return with slice. Zipping through the court.

:36:26. > :36:30.And just like in the first set before we got to the tie-break,

:36:31. > :36:34.Federer had the advantage and he is paid back again. Two big serves

:36:35. > :37:00.would put Berdych in a tremendous position.

:37:01. > :37:14.That's a bad one. Federer had moved to that side. The coaching camp for

:37:15. > :37:18.Berdych obviously feeling the pain. The mistake was to miss the shot,

:37:19. > :37:37.but I am surprised he keeps going to the forehand.

:37:38. > :38:14.Federer, two points away from the first set, on his own serve.

:38:15. > :38:24.I think she might have tickets for the final two.

:38:25. > :38:33.The ball boy is still looking for the ball.

:38:34. > :38:46.And that is the way. And Federer exclaims his delight. First set, in

:38:47. > :38:55.53 minutes. That wasn't easy. Had a break, squandered it, but got

:38:56. > :39:02.through the breaker. Set to Roger. SUE BARKER: It was tight but Federer

:39:03. > :39:05.is still yet to drop a set that these championships. We will be back

:39:06. > :39:11.with this semifinal in just a moment, where he stays on course for

:39:12. > :39:15.his eighth Wimbledon title, his 19th Grand Slam victory, Roger Federer.

:39:16. > :39:17.We will be back with that, and then tomorrow it is the ladies who will

:39:18. > :39:37.take their place in the sun. I grew up dreaming and reading about

:39:38. > :39:41.Wimbledon. Fresh ice cream. Wimbledon is the Golden Globe you

:39:42. > :39:46.are aiming for. Immediately fell in love with it. This is just heaven.

:39:47. > :39:51.The whole tournament is rare in much the same and there are a lot of

:39:52. > :39:58.awesome things. This tournament is always special. I feel a lot of

:39:59. > :40:07.support. The big stage. You walk on Centre Court and there is such a

:40:08. > :40:14.harsh, before everybody explodes. -- there is such quiet before everybody

:40:15. > :40:15.explodes. Quite a fairy tale. The best part of my life and I don't

:40:16. > :40:28.want that part to end. SUE BARKER: It is the two players

:40:29. > :40:33.who have looked so impressive over the past two weeks. A sixth time for

:40:34. > :40:44.Venus, or a first for Garbine Muguruza? That is tomorrow, but back

:40:45. > :40:51.we go, Federer won set up on Centre Court.

:40:52. > :40:58.Marin Cilic awaits in Sunday's men's final. That is the championship

:40:59. > :41:11.matchup. A great weekend ahead here at Wimbledon.

:41:12. > :41:19.A little credit to Berdych. That was Federer's toughest set of the

:41:20. > :41:26.championship so far. He had to dig a little deeper.

:41:27. > :41:33.I said it was more important for Berdych, because the favourite is

:41:34. > :41:40.clear, Roger Federer. Anything but a victory would be a big surprise.

:41:41. > :42:08.So you want to start with that first set.

:42:09. > :42:17.Well, that gets put into the same draw as that upshot in the first

:42:18. > :42:24.set. Appalling! A delight to four players everywhere. I don't know

:42:25. > :42:25.quite what the rush was to hit the drop volley. Could have easily let

:42:26. > :43:05.the ball bounce. 92 tournament victories worldwide,

:43:06. > :43:11.18 Grand Slam championships. No one has one more. The first victory for

:43:12. > :43:13.Federer was in 2001. He is most famous for arriving with that

:43:14. > :43:17.forehand down the line to beat Sampras on this very court, before

:43:18. > :43:24.he lost to Tim Henman in the quarterfinal. But everybody saw

:43:25. > :43:28.Federer first once upon a time. Even as a junior he certainly had

:43:29. > :43:37.something about him. When he won in Milan in 2001, it was, OK, fine. He

:43:38. > :43:42.was actually a junior with a temper. He broke rackets and screamed.

:43:43. > :43:48.Totally different to what he is now. Something must have changed along

:43:49. > :43:51.the way. I will tell you what happened, his parents said, we are

:43:52. > :43:54.not going to drive you to the tournaments any more, you are

:43:55. > :43:58.embarrassing the family. You can't act like that. We don't want

:43:59. > :44:06.anything to do with you if you do. So that is when he changed.

:44:07. > :44:16.Bjorn Borg was the same. Racket chucking, smasher of equipment.

:44:17. > :44:30.Henman was worse! Banggaard I was well behaved all the

:44:31. > :44:44.time. -- thank God I was well behaved.

:44:45. > :44:54.It is that one again. He will make one by the end of the match. As a

:44:55. > :44:57.player, you have to be stubborn, convinced about your capabilities.

:44:58. > :44:59.Certainly, he has all the reasons too, so he keeps trying the shot

:45:00. > :45:29.until he is going to make it. This time he went to the backhander

:45:30. > :45:33.couple of times. No good. These first ten minutes of the second set

:45:34. > :45:38.are important for Berdych. Federer is serving first and has his nose in

:45:39. > :45:40.front with the first set. An early break here could make it extremely

:45:41. > :46:04.uphill battle. Throwing the ball back. Would have

:46:05. > :46:32.been a great souvenir. The Wimbledon museum here is

:46:33. > :46:38.award-winning, by the way. If you do visit outside of the two tournament

:46:39. > :46:43.weeks, come to the museum. It is excellent. Tim has got some stuff in

:46:44. > :47:19.there, and I'm sure you have, too, Boris. I do.

:47:20. > :47:26.For the grass tennis historian, I love the way Federer uses every

:47:27. > :47:30.aspect of the game. The backhand slice, the drop shot, he stays back,

:47:31. > :47:37.serves and volleys. He is really the full Monty.

:47:38. > :47:42.That is what makes him so difficult to play against, because he has so

:47:43. > :47:48.mini different games that can hurt you. -- he has so many different

:47:49. > :48:11.games. A great second serve from Federer

:48:12. > :48:15.but it is amazing how effective the kick-serve is on grass. In the old

:48:16. > :48:58.days, when the ball would skip through, that really reared up.

:48:59. > :49:06.Not always technical, but there are things you can take from the

:49:07. > :49:13.analysis of all of the plays. It is all put into the Hawk-Eye system.

:49:14. > :49:20.And it is how a player backs up the big serve. You can say a 140 mph

:49:21. > :49:24.serve, it is not everything. It is how you place it. Federer's

:49:25. > :49:29.placement is something you have both talked about. This is extremely

:49:30. > :49:38.accurate on both sides. Going out wide, 60% of the time. 63% on the

:49:39. > :49:42.left. What does he do when the ball comes back into play? He hits the

:49:43. > :49:47.forehand 90% of the time, the shot he wants to get into play. And look

:49:48. > :49:51.where he is distributing the ball. It is a bit like the wagon wheel in

:49:52. > :49:56.cricket, that is where he is hitting it. To the corners, to the lines,

:49:57. > :50:00.and the work on the ball as well with the top-spin. The serving

:50:01. > :50:04.statistic is interesting because against a big man, someone like

:50:05. > :50:09.Berdych with a long reach, when you are going wide it has to be accurate

:50:10. > :50:12.because they can get onto it. I am surprised Federer has not used the

:50:13. > :50:17.body serve more, but maybe that is something he is keeping up his

:50:18. > :50:22.sleeve for later in the match. I think he wants to get Berdych out of

:50:23. > :50:24.the court, out of position. Berdych on the run is not as effective as

:50:25. > :52:10.when he has time. A couple of fast returns, one of the

:52:11. > :52:13.second serve at 35 and 15, and that one off a 125 mile-per-hour first

:52:14. > :53:15.serve, gives Federer the first break point opportunities of the set.

:53:16. > :53:20.Strong return by Federer, taking the ball on the rise. Not giving Berdych

:53:21. > :54:14.the time to set it up. This is exciting, this is

:54:15. > :54:19.entertaining, this is how you play on grass. Don't you think with

:54:20. > :54:22.Berdych's first serve, when it is that powerful and Federer is

:54:23. > :54:28.blocking it back, there is an opportunity for Berdych to serve and

:54:29. > :54:49.volley? Absolutely. Not every serve, but every second or third serve.

:54:50. > :54:58.Well, how he managed to get to this one and to whip the forehand, I am

:54:59. > :55:02.not sure. Really nothing wrong with that from Berdych, and that was line

:55:03. > :55:48.ball, and Berdych still cannot get out of his own service game.

:55:49. > :55:54.Another feather in the cap of the big man from the Czech Republic.

:55:55. > :56:06.Over five minutes, and that is why they stand. His coach, Stepanek, has

:56:07. > :56:11.been added to the team recently. Stepanek took a player to 29th in

:56:12. > :56:38.the world in singles. So he has the full team up there. A physio.

:56:39. > :56:42.It is becoming a very physical contest, both players having to work

:56:43. > :57:14.hard on their points. She may be watching her husband in

:57:15. > :57:25.the Wimbledon final on their anniversary on Sunday. Either that,

:57:26. > :57:30.or they could be at home in Monte Carlo. This set will go a long way

:57:31. > :57:31.to deciding that. If he loses it, he will be in real trouble. He is

:57:32. > :57:55.hanging in at the moment. Long service game, Berdych, quite a

:57:56. > :58:14.quick one for Federer. It all serves to build momentum in a set.

:58:15. > :58:25.Berdych has the expression and the walk of a man who has been through

:58:26. > :58:32.the mill already. Been on the ropes a couple of times. He has taken some

:58:33. > :58:41.body shots. And there is another. Second semifinal of the

:58:42. > :58:47.Championships. Federer, of fiercely this is one of the sporting stories

:58:48. > :58:53.of all time. But a year ago, he lost to Milos Raonic in the semifinal. He

:58:54. > :59:01.immediately took six months off. You cannot take six months off and then

:59:02. > :59:06.win the Australian Open. Then he wins Indian Wells and Miami, two

:59:07. > :59:11.massive tournaments. Then he takes the whole of the clay-court season

:59:12. > :59:16.of, plays a bit of grass, and now this again. It is an amazing story.

:59:17. > :59:21.He is playing tournaments and winning them, seemingly at will,

:59:22. > :59:25.Boris. Normally after six months off, the golden rule is that it

:59:26. > :59:29.takes as much to come back to where you left. He left in pain with knee

:59:30. > :59:36.trouble and needed to recover, so for him to prolong his career, it

:59:37. > :59:43.was to do just that. Talking about prolonging careers, we must mention

:59:44. > :59:49.Sir David at Umbro, who has won BAFTAs in black-and-white, colour,

:59:50. > :59:56.HD and 3-D. He is an absolute legend. -- Sir David Attenborough.

:59:57. > :00:01.This broadcast would not be the same without him. He was the man who put

:00:02. > :00:06.colour cameras into Centre Court. Great to see him in the Royal Ox. It

:00:07. > :00:10.is great to see one legend watching the other. Maybe that was the

:00:11. > :00:47.attraction. The match each other for cases in

:00:48. > :01:29.this match. -- aces. Started to see that Berdych is

:01:30. > :01:34.moving a little bit heavier now. He has been running like a rabbit, but

:01:35. > :03:14.we are starting to see the effect. Federer had all of the time in the

:03:15. > :03:27.world take a passing shot. He picked a lob.

:03:28. > :03:40.It is the second-half volley he has had to play off the baseline. That

:03:41. > :03:43.is Martin Stepanek there. Berdych's coach. Delighted with what this man

:03:44. > :04:08.has done to start this game. Interesting when Federer is in doubt

:04:09. > :04:22.he comes to the net. Berdych is challenging the call.

:04:23. > :04:42.Berdych has two challenges remaining.

:04:43. > :05:05.Hello. What ever you can do. Tremendous tactical awareness from

:05:06. > :05:13.Berdych. Not exactly inexperienced, is he? A finalist in 2010. And a

:05:14. > :05:20.semifinalist last year. He was out after three straight sets quite

:05:21. > :05:26.easily. Short in the rallies. Keeping them nice and tight. And

:05:27. > :05:38.again. Great response, isn't it, to the

:05:39. > :06:02.disappointment of the first set? Stop it. That's ridiculous. Look at

:06:03. > :06:06.the height over the net. Then look at where it landed. On the other

:06:07. > :06:19.side of the court. It was an unbelievable shot. The angle. Now

:06:20. > :06:26.break point at 3-3. It is a tough game, mentally, this, for Berdych.

:06:27. > :06:30.He has hit so many great shots and so many great returns. He has had

:06:31. > :06:48.break point opportunities and might have nothing to show for it.

:06:49. > :06:57.They great champion. Three times a finalist against you, Boris. They

:06:58. > :07:04.were amazing matches to watch. And I still can't remember many better

:07:05. > :07:07.backhand players than him. He never gave you any forehand to serve out,

:07:08. > :07:17.didn't he? He showed a lot of backhand. Yes. He had an open grip.

:07:18. > :07:23.Looking to serve you -- looking for you to serve him on the backhand.

:07:24. > :07:28.One of the great movers of the game. And a fine man. It used to be easier

:07:29. > :07:33.to play somebody that you do not like. But we got on really well off

:07:34. > :07:38.the court. Even though we had so many Wimbledon finals. We had so

:07:39. > :07:44.much respect despite that. Did you talk much? There wasn't any friction

:07:45. > :07:48.on the court. No drama. No nasty mess. With some players you have

:07:49. > :07:52.that. I don't want to mention any names, we all know them. But for

:07:53. > :08:09.this guy it was always all about the sport, which I love.

:08:10. > :08:22.Cilic awaits the final come his first Wimbledon final. -- Cilic

:08:23. > :08:23.awaits the final, his first Wimbledon final. And believe me he

:08:24. > :10:56.will be watching this. First set, we saw Federer take the

:10:57. > :11:00.early lead. He was experimenting. Expressing himself. He looked

:11:01. > :11:09.supremely confident. There was payback with a tough tie-break.

:11:10. > :11:13.Certainly times in Tomas Berdych's Korea where losing that first set,

:11:14. > :11:20.and being under so much pressure, might have told. -- career. But he

:11:21. > :11:21.has not gone anywhere in this second set. He is still standing his

:11:22. > :11:43.ground. No, no, stop it.

:11:44. > :11:49.CHUCKLES That is one of those which really

:11:50. > :11:52.only Federer plays. You are meant to move your feet.

:11:53. > :12:21.LAUGHTER Not just flick the wrist.

:12:22. > :12:27.STUDIO: Federer goes ahead. We are leaving this night on BBC One

:12:28. > :12:32.because it is time to go to the news. But it continues right now

:12:33. > :12:39.over on BBC Two. This semifinal continues right now over on BBC Two.

:12:40. > :12:42.Federer and Berdych are fighting it out for a place in the final, but

:12:43. > :12:47.earlier today it was Cilic, the number seven seed, who booked his

:12:48. > :12:48.place and his first Wimbledon final, beating Sam Querrey in four

:12:49. > :12:52.place and his first Wimbledon final, beating Sam Querrey in four sets.

:12:53. > :13:00.This was match point. Keep an eye out for an amazing celebration. Yes!

:13:01. > :13:05.That's it from Cilic. That is what it means to him to be in the

:13:06. > :13:10.Wimbledon final. He has only got to the quarters before, but he has

:13:11. > :13:15.booked his place. The former US Open champion celebrating on Centre Court

:13:16. > :13:19.earlier today. Cilic is through. Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych are

:13:20. > :13:25.battling it out, that's both on BBC Two. We also have plenty of mixed

:13:26. > :13:29.doubles action to come with Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis. And the

:13:30. > :13:32.defending champions. They will be playing in the mixed doubles

:13:33. > :13:36.semifinals, as well. Then we look ahead to tomorrow and a wonderful

:13:37. > :13:49.ladies final between five-time champion Venus Williams... The

:13:50. > :13:54.ladies final, that is. That is it today from us on BBC One. But the

:13:55. > :13:56.semifinal between Federer and Berdych continues over on BBC Two.

:13:57. > :13:59.Goodbye.
