:00:08. > :00:13.This is a national programme. Now we are going to take you over to women

:00:14. > :00:20.women... -- over to Wimbledon. Her Majesty to present the trophy.

:00:21. > :00:48.Brilliant. Oh, yeah. SUE BARKER: Wimbledon 2017 is under

:00:49. > :00:54.way and Day 1 didn't disappoint with stories everywhere you looked.

:00:55. > :01:04.She has done it. It's great to see her back, playing as well as this.

:01:05. > :01:07.It's another of those magical Centre Court stories. Venus Williams. Her

:01:08. > :01:16.first match on grass this year, starts with a win. The smile says it

:01:17. > :01:33.all for Heather Watson. Finishing in style, Rafael Nadal beware the rest.

:01:34. > :01:41.And Konata to win the watch. Done it before. The sign of a champ. Now for

:01:42. > :01:49.Day 2 and a look at two more greats of the men's game.

:01:50. > :01:57.# It takes two to make a thing go right

:01:58. > :02:08.# It takes two to make it out of sight... #

:02:09. > :02:16.Yes, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are today's headline acts

:02:17. > :02:19.with so much anticipation about Federer, in particular, at this

:02:20. > :02:23.year's Wimbledon but plenty to enjoy as well on the outside courts, you

:02:24. > :02:28.can watch our comprehensive coverage on BBC Television, the red button,

:02:29. > :02:37.BBC Sport website and apps. So there are so many ways you can watch the

:02:38. > :02:38.tennis unfold here on Day 2 of the Championship.

:02:39. > :02:44.Some of the stars who will be on court arriving here today. Angelique

:02:45. > :02:48.Kerber she will open up Centre Court today in the absence of defending

:02:49. > :02:55.champion, Serena Williams. Juan Martin Del Potro, he halls an early

:02:56. > :03:01.start. He is on court at 11.30. The 2009 US Open champion and former

:03:02. > :03:07.semifinalist here. And Novak Djokovic has just arrived on one of

:03:08. > :03:22.the outside courts here, Court 10, practising with his team, with Andre

:03:23. > :03:27.Aggassi. So, let's have a look at the order

:03:28. > :04:05.of play. Centre Court gets under way at 1.00pm:

:04:06. > :04:20.Other watches we will be following out on Court Two:

:04:21. > :04:29.we will go to the Edmund-Ward match shortly.

:04:30. > :04:42.That is tea what we have on offer. I'm up above Henman Hill and they've

:04:43. > :04:46.spoilt me today with two of the all-time greats, Billie Jean king

:04:47. > :04:51.and Boris Becker. What a treat for me. Lovely to see you back, I know

:04:52. > :04:59.you love this tournament My 57th year. That tells you how much I love

:05:00. > :05:02.it. Every year. How exciting is it, this year in both the men and

:05:03. > :05:06.women's? Wide open. Unbelievable. I was using that red button yesterday

:05:07. > :05:11.trying to watch all the different courts because I need to watch them,

:05:12. > :05:18.I don't get to watch as much any more. I was all over the place on

:05:19. > :05:25.the BBC with that red button. So I suggest to people, if you are home,

:05:26. > :05:28.you can watch almost any court at Wimbledon, so just check what

:05:29. > :05:34.matches you want, fantastic. You can avoid me. No, I don't want to avoid

:05:35. > :05:42.you. If you come down here you have to watch these courts. I know. On

:05:43. > :05:44.the app you can watch any match you like. And you can hear the

:05:45. > :05:48.announcers. Keep learning. He with always have to keep learning. What

:05:49. > :05:52.did you learn yesterday from Andy Murray what were your thoughts? That

:05:53. > :05:58.he was fit enough to win. The good news. He had a wobble. The funny

:05:59. > :06:05.thing was, once the points started he was fit as a fiddle. I don't know

:06:06. > :06:11.how many drop shots he caught. Once the point ended he started limped.

:06:12. > :06:16.I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I'm sure he has something. The

:06:17. > :06:20.overriding problem is a lot of expectation. He is the champion. The

:06:21. > :06:23.whole country wants him to repeat, the bigger problem. I think the hip

:06:24. > :06:26.is something he will manage, otherwise he wouldn't have played.

:06:27. > :06:34.He was good enough to win yesterday. I'm sure he is sore this morning a

:06:35. > :06:40.little bit but he is good enough to go all the way. You think? I think

:06:41. > :06:46.it really helps to have every other day off, and you don't have to worry

:06:47. > :06:50.about bad weather any more because you have the roof. That's huge,

:06:51. > :06:55.especially if you have a niggle. I don't think there is ever a match

:06:56. > :07:01.people play, if we didn't have niggles. If he says it is good

:07:02. > :07:07.enough - I hope he does the right thing for himself and not worry too

:07:08. > :07:13.much. I know he wants to play for the country, show up for Britain.

:07:14. > :07:19.But I think he needs to take care of himself. Sometimes, if it is not

:07:20. > :07:23.right, it is a short-term loss for a long-term gain but he looked fine

:07:24. > :07:26.yesterday. That's him out on the practise court now. Still with a

:07:27. > :07:30.limp going on, as Boris said. As expected. It was interesting, Phil

:07:31. > :07:35.Jones after the match, he asked him about the injury and the limp. In

:07:36. > :07:38.your press conference you made an interesting comment about people

:07:39. > :07:41.perreceiving things or being on court with your body language or

:07:42. > :07:47.maybe there is a limp there that people are looking into more than it

:07:48. > :07:54.actually is. Yes, I was just saying I don't know if he always sort of -

:07:55. > :08:00.I don't think I have the smoothest walk at the best of times. I don't

:08:01. > :08:04.know, just because my hip has been sore and everyone has been talking

:08:05. > :08:10.about t like everyone thinks that I'm, I don't know hobbling on the

:08:11. > :08:16.court more or just because my hip has been sore for a few weeks that I

:08:17. > :08:23.have been limping a little bit and I don't even realise. But I'm not in

:08:24. > :08:27.pain when I'm walking on court. I felt fine. That's positive He is

:08:28. > :08:32.fine then, go for it. You can knotted reach the places he reached,

:08:33. > :08:38.a crazy player, he must have caught 25 drop shots. He was totally fine

:08:39. > :08:42.and after he went back to living. Maybe because he had this problem

:08:43. > :08:46.for a while, it became his walk now. I wouldn't hit too many drop shots

:08:47. > :08:49.against him. Too quick. Great anticipation, they are testing his

:08:50. > :08:56.hip. They did the right thing but after the first three or four, you

:08:57. > :09:02.say - forget that, this guy is 100%. They have such a great team. Talking

:09:03. > :09:09.about two ice baths today. One would finish me off. One at Wimbledon and

:09:10. > :09:15.another before he goes to bed. Doing the right thing. Great supporting

:09:16. > :09:21.team. Without it, it is impossible. Not only Ivan Lendl and Jamie. It is

:09:22. > :09:24.everybody else. You know, to win Wimbledon you need to have the

:09:25. > :09:28.perfect team in every shape and former. I think Andy has that. It

:09:29. > :09:35.makes such a big difference to have the money today. I look at the teams

:09:36. > :09:39.and their overheads and I go - great. That helps you stay at your

:09:40. > :09:47.optimum level all year long. They are a brand now. That's why they can

:09:48. > :09:54.play in their mid-30s. Roger Federer is an example. You don't have to

:09:55. > :10:00.stop at 30 or 31. Or back in the days, 26. The recovery wasn't the

:10:01. > :10:03.same and you got slower. We didn't have the information available,

:10:04. > :10:07.nutrition, technology. All these things help a player stay as long as

:10:08. > :10:11.we can. Yesterday, Stanislas Wawrinka going out. It wasn't good

:10:12. > :10:19.to see him play yesterday. I'm a big fan of Stan the Man but he is not

:10:20. > :10:22.comfortable on grass. He never won this tournament. The only one he

:10:23. > :10:28.never won. There was always a question mark and the young guns, we

:10:29. > :10:34.talk about the fear. There is no fear. They don't care who is on the

:10:35. > :10:38.other side. 21 years' young and they can all play and slowly but surely

:10:39. > :10:45.the gap is closing. The young guns are starting to arrive. That will be

:10:46. > :10:49.interesting. There will be a passing of the guard but right now hold on

:10:50. > :10:52.to what we have. And yesterday, Aljaz Bedene, after four-and-a-half

:10:53. > :10:55.hours out there, he finally broke Ivo Karlovic, a mammoth match. Yes

:10:56. > :11:01.for everybody playing him, every 28 minutes, you have a chance for the

:11:02. > :11:07.other 27, one side to the other, you cannot touch it. Karlovic had 44

:11:08. > :11:16.aces. Maybe he hit ten in the whole match but he broke t he did t the

:11:17. > :11:21.only break of the match and good for him. A big celebration at the end.

:11:22. > :11:26.He hung in. You have to keep hanging in. Like you said, you walk back and

:11:27. > :11:31.forth. Nice shot. You get no rhythm. Really difficult. What #23r your

:11:32. > :11:37.thoughts on Jo Konta. She came in having lost at the French Open but

:11:38. > :11:42.came in having done well at Eastbourne. She had a bad fall. I

:11:43. > :11:46.saw that fall, wow, whiplash. I thought she played really well. So

:11:47. > :11:50.interesting her story, how she got the sports psychologist and changed.

:11:51. > :11:54.She used to be a choke. Everybody said - stay with her, she'll choke,

:11:55. > :11:59.she's not very good. She has changed everything. Her mentality. Became a

:12:00. > :12:03.citizen here. All the right things. I love listening to her in her

:12:04. > :12:10.interviews. She figured it out, the only way you will win, one ball at a

:12:11. > :12:16.time. Don't get too high or low. She has figured it out. Given herself

:12:17. > :12:23.the opportunity to be the best she can be, what a price to pay a will

:12:24. > :12:27.the of players don't want to pay the price. The only thing that went off

:12:28. > :12:33.a little yesterday was her forehand but she figures it out and adjusts

:12:34. > :12:36.well, compared to how she used to be, although we talked about her

:12:37. > :12:39.having a little trouble adjusting but she's smart. She played a little

:12:40. > :12:46.Grasse coming in and she has adjusted -- played a little grass.

:12:47. > :12:50.It is a surface where you have to adjust. Yes, no two ways around it.

:12:51. > :12:54.They play grass these two weeks of the year and it is a different

:12:55. > :13:00.surface to where everybody is coming from. They need to pick up a

:13:01. > :13:04.tournament. I'm amazed some of these players not choosing some to play.

:13:05. > :13:08.Even Novak Djokovic decided to play at Eastbourne. He would've been a

:13:09. > :13:13.different player today if he hadn't played the four matches. This is a

:13:14. > :13:18.surface where you have to adapt, as you say. At Wimbledon you want it

:13:19. > :13:23.shine. This is the place to shine and I think Konta is embracing that

:13:24. > :13:30.fact. She is a better player now on grass than she was a couple of weeks

:13:31. > :13:34.ago. Thank you for the moment. We will look ahead to today but what

:13:35. > :13:40.about the weather. It was lovely and sunny when we got here but clouded

:13:41. > :13:42.over now. Let's find out what is in store with the lovely Carol

:13:43. > :13:47.Kirkwood. Well you are right, it has cloud you

:13:48. > :13:50.had over as you can see but through the afternoon the cloud will break

:13:51. > :13:56.and there will be further sunny spells, although a bit cloudier than

:13:57. > :14:00.today. Only a 10% risk of a shower this afternoon. Right enough

:14:01. > :14:05.yesterday there was only a 20% and we saw one but we expect it to stay

:14:06. > :14:10.mostly dry. Not just through the afternoon but through into the

:14:11. > :14:13.evening. You will notice this evening a build-up in cloud again.

:14:14. > :14:17.The temperature just coming down a little bit. For tomorrow, it'll be

:14:18. > :14:21.hot, humid and a lot of sunshine around. Temperatures, 27 to 28 with

:14:22. > :14:27.a low probability of hitting 30 Celsius. So a sticky feel to the day

:14:28. > :14:32.and so, just before I go, Sue, your favourite subject, the pollen levels

:14:33. > :14:37.today Will. Today here at Wimbledon they are high. And that is not good

:14:38. > :14:44.news for you, is it Carol? I have warned you and it is going to start

:14:45. > :14:49.happening from tomorrow I'm going to start asking you questions about the

:14:50. > :14:53.drew. You are part of the team now, are you ready? Yes. Get looking. Gl

:14:54. > :14:56.questions tomorrow. And get your antihistamine. No-one suffers from

:14:57. > :15:02.hay fever here. No. No. I'm ready. I take something for it. Now we will

:15:03. > :15:07.look ahead to today and the big act on Centre Court is Roger Federer T

:15:08. > :15:11.looks like he is playing the best tennis of his career. -- it looks

:15:12. > :15:16.like he is playing the best tennis of his career. He come into 2017,

:15:17. > :15:18.won the Australian Open, his 18th Grand Slam title. He has been

:15:19. > :15:30.talking to Jonathan overend. Roger Federer remains the boss on

:15:31. > :15:41.Centre Court. Well, Roger, 14 years since your

:15:42. > :15:45.first victory and five years since your last and yet you are the

:15:46. > :15:49.favourite again. Can you believe that? I don't know who says that,

:15:50. > :15:57.but it is strange for a 35-year-old, who has not played the clay court

:15:58. > :16:02.season at all to come in here as the season. That's why I don't believe

:16:03. > :16:06.everything I hear. How strategic was that decision to miss the clay court

:16:07. > :16:09.season, in terms of your career management? Well, I think it was

:16:10. > :16:14.more decisions based on health, looking forward to still a tough and

:16:15. > :16:21.gruelling year. You know I'm not 22 any more where I can just play every

:16:22. > :16:25.tournament I see and just go Pacman and go, yum, yum and eat everything.

:16:26. > :16:29.I have to be smart about my scheduling. I felt like my best

:16:30. > :16:35.chance to do well here at Wimbledon was to not play Paris. It was a

:16:36. > :16:41.tough decision. The first time in my life actually I pull out of a major,

:16:42. > :16:47.feeling 100% ready to G the first time in basically 18 years I had six

:16:48. > :16:53.months to myself with my family, with my wife and I could dictate

:16:54. > :17:00.where I wanted to be and when to do what. It is supposed to be nice and

:17:01. > :17:06.refreshing. I think it shows on the tennis court ever since. What was

:17:07. > :17:10.the best thing you did? I did a lot of hiking in the Swiss mountains, I

:17:11. > :17:14.enjoyed. We went to the Hamptons outside of New York shortly before

:17:15. > :17:20.the US Open. Went to the Paris fashion show. Did my first trip with

:17:21. > :17:24.my wife away from the kids. Stuff that we normally never have time to

:17:25. > :17:29.do. Fantastic. And then this season and you win in Australia, an 18th

:17:30. > :17:34.Grand Slam. Did you honestly believe you could win another one? I mean I

:17:35. > :17:39.believed I could win another one, but not Australia. I was hoping to

:17:40. > :17:45.be 100% ready and match-ready and here at Wimbledon. Australia was for

:17:46. > :17:49.me, more of a stepping stone to be quite Hones. I thought if I could

:17:50. > :17:53.make the quarters or semis that would be unbelievable, because we

:17:54. > :17:59.have to not forget also I started the season as 17 in the world. It

:18:00. > :18:05.Should you triumph here again, five years after your last, where would

:18:06. > :18:08.that rank in terms of all your great achievements? Extremely high.

:18:09. > :18:14.Australia, it almost felt like the best win of my career. I don't know

:18:15. > :18:18.how to tell you. It felt that amazing. It came that much of a

:18:19. > :18:23.surprise. I'm playing so much more relaxed and free tennis. Ever since

:18:24. > :18:28.winning Australia, I can even play more freely. I'm trying to remind

:18:29. > :18:31.myself every single point I play, keep going for your shots. Enjoy

:18:32. > :18:35.your things and good things will happen. Worrying for opponents.

:18:36. > :18:41.Well, never a guarantee you will still pull off the good shots. You

:18:42. > :18:47.might hit the back fence. So nice, he talks as well as he played and

:18:48. > :18:53.going on about that match against Rafa at the Australian Open. To come

:18:54. > :18:59.back from a break down in the fifth against Rafa, almost ununheard of. I

:19:00. > :19:04.love his honest words and he does it in five languages. The guy has the

:19:05. > :19:07.Full Monty. Not only the best player, a very intelligent man.

:19:08. > :19:10.Father of four. Very honest. He didn't believe he was going to win

:19:11. > :19:13.Australia. He had a six-month break, testing the waters, whether his

:19:14. > :19:20.fittedness and playing level is back. All of a sudden he wins

:19:21. > :19:25.against Nadal and ever since then he is playing. You said he is playing

:19:26. > :19:31.his best tennis, he has to because the competition is better. If you

:19:32. > :19:37.look at his year, he has played 26 matches, won 24, only lost two and

:19:38. > :19:41.had match points in both matches that he lost. Think about that. I

:19:42. > :19:49.have been watching him forever. All the women we call him Our Husband.

:19:50. > :19:55.Howl the women go - how did Our Husband do today? We love him that

:19:56. > :20:02.much. How can you not love him? He is honest, he speaks so many lancing

:20:03. > :20:08.wadges. I love to watch how his head is so still. How he watches the ball

:20:09. > :20:13.and how dynamic his body S he is the best-ever. His preparations before

:20:14. > :20:18.each shot is mazing with foot work. He has prepared faster than any

:20:19. > :20:21.other player in the history of the game. The greatest ever. And the

:20:22. > :20:25.one-handed backhand now is such a threat because the racket face is

:20:26. > :20:30.bigger. He has a bigger sweep spot. I'm telling you, he is playing

:20:31. > :20:37.better than ever and I think taking that six months off was the major

:20:38. > :20:41.thing. He is so swift in that he man axe his time perfectly. They really

:20:42. > :20:47.have a lot of thought on his schedule, like he mentioned. I think

:20:48. > :20:54.he is amazing but when he is out there, I think deep down to the core

:20:55. > :21:00.ever of his being, he thinks - I always have a chance if I play well.

:21:01. > :21:07.He is amazing, I just think... I can't say enough, nobody can, he can

:21:08. > :21:12.do everything. And I think he is better at net than he used to be,

:21:13. > :21:17.finding his backhand volley, particularly. When I spoke to him

:21:18. > :21:21.recently I said was it the love of winning or the fear of losing. He

:21:22. > :21:26.said he never fears losing but he loves winning. His motivation. The

:21:27. > :21:30.ultimate for any sportsman and women. The feeling on Centre Court,

:21:31. > :21:35.having match points. We are chasing. He has won so much but for him to

:21:36. > :21:42.keep chasing, the interesting thing think is, he can not get rid of

:21:43. > :21:48.that. He has it until the end of time but as long as he can do it

:21:49. > :21:56.with the tennis raect, he will do it. He is looking more aggressive I

:21:57. > :22:02.tell us, a lot of us hated the losing, rather than the wink. The

:22:03. > :22:07.pain of losing. Well he said the opposite. He doesn't have much pain,

:22:08. > :22:12.he doesn't lose. Even when he loses, he has match point. He dud stand

:22:13. > :22:16.pain, I suppose. Now moving on to Novak Djokovic, a different year for

:22:17. > :22:22.him. He came into Wimbledon last year holding all four Grand Slam

:22:23. > :22:27.titles. Now he has none but he won the title the Eastbourne.

:22:28. > :22:38.Nof be a, your trip is Eastbourne, it was well worth it? -- Nova zm, It

:22:39. > :22:41.was. It feels like a good decision. I felt as the tournament was

:22:42. > :22:45.progressing, I was raising the level and quality of tennis, which is

:22:46. > :22:48.something that I was hoping for and looking forward to. Right now, I

:22:49. > :22:52.couldn't ask for a better preparation for Wimbledon. I made

:22:53. > :22:57.the decision to go to Eastbourne because I felt like I needed to have

:22:58. > :22:59.official tournament and official matches on grass, which requiring

:23:00. > :23:06.time for adaptation, adjustment of the movement and, you know, it is a

:23:07. > :23:10.completely different game plan. I really enjoyed myself there and I

:23:11. > :23:15.think I'm coming into Wimbledon, you know, more confident and really

:23:16. > :23:25.excited, of course for what is coming up. Your coaching team for

:23:26. > :23:33.the next two weeks, Andre Aggasi and Mario, so why supply a Wall Street

:23:34. > :23:38.banker? I don't see it like that. We played against each other a lot.

:23:39. > :23:43.Even in Wimbledon. I'm happy to see him not not jacket and suit and tie,

:23:44. > :23:48.I'm happy to see him in his tennis attire. And we'll spend quality time

:23:49. > :23:53.here with Andre, him and myself before Wimbledon and we will take it

:23:54. > :23:57.from there. And if you do win here in two weeks time you will be a

:23:58. > :24:05.four-time Wimbledon champion, the same number of titles Rod Laver. Do

:24:06. > :24:10.those mile stones, do you use them as motivation? Of course it is an

:24:11. > :24:16.incentive, absolutely. As much as I have achieved in my life n my

:24:17. > :24:22.career, I still want to do more. I think that hunger for me, it brings

:24:23. > :24:30.good energy, it brings motivation to you day-in and day-out, to put a lot

:24:31. > :24:36.of North East trying to be the best I can be. -- into trying to be the

:24:37. > :24:44.best I can be. And Boris, it has been a tough year, a tough 12 months

:24:45. > :24:50.for Novak. We shouldn't be surprised. He is human. A year ago

:24:51. > :24:55.on top of the mountain, four titles. So he has all the reasons in the

:24:56. > :24:59.world to put his pedal off the metal a bit. To concentrate more on his

:25:00. > :25:02.family. The result, expecting another baby in September. That was

:25:03. > :25:05.more important to him. I'm family guy, I get that. His head is back

:25:06. > :25:21.into tennis. He has Agassi in his corner. I was

:25:22. > :25:26.so pleased to see him at Eastbourne. Some things you don't get in

:25:27. > :25:32.practise, you get in a match and all of a sudden he is a different

:25:33. > :25:38.Djokovic than he was a few weeks ago. Oh, you have to win matches.

:25:39. > :25:43.You can practise all you want but there is nothing like it when they

:25:44. > :25:47.say "play." It is real. He was right. I think he really needs to

:25:48. > :25:54.figure out his team. Djokovic needs that stability. He really needs T he

:25:55. > :26:02.has Agassi there, but if Ancic is the right guy, fine, he needs that

:26:03. > :26:06.stability, so he knows who is in his camp and what is happening. The

:26:07. > :26:12.disruptions, it is difficult. After losing the French I think he lost a

:26:13. > :26:17.bit of his mojo. Now he is back, you can tell from the interview he is

:26:18. > :26:21.back and wants it again. A great sign. You had so much success with

:26:22. > :26:27.him, Boris, he obviously loves to learn. It is all about the mental

:26:28. > :26:33.side of preparing for the big matches, like at Wimbledon. Well, he

:26:34. > :26:36.knows how to hit a forehand backhand by himself without anybody. It is

:26:37. > :26:39.the moments before the final about the preparation week. Almost it is

:26:40. > :26:47.about the dinners and breakfasts we have together of - why do you want

:26:48. > :26:50.it play still at 30. What is the motivation? Is it history, your

:26:51. > :26:55.children? With players like that, who want so much, it is more than

:26:56. > :27:02.just winning the tennis match, there has to be a story about it. It is so

:27:03. > :27:06.difficult. So desperate to win. Sometimes you canp want it too much.

:27:07. > :27:12.Yes and you choke because you get too tense. If you are too tense you

:27:13. > :27:18.don't have the power and fluidity you need on each stroke. He is a guy

:27:19. > :27:21.who is really #1345r9. Another one, five languages, he speaks even

:27:22. > :27:27.German. He is very interested in the world around him. Did he ask you a

:27:28. > :27:34.lot of questions. A lot. He reminds me of a person who asks a lot of

:27:35. > :27:39.questions. The first thing I ask any player, 10, 11, 12, why do you play

:27:40. > :27:45.tennis. ? That's the person I ask. You can see the different responses,

:27:46. > :27:51.you are asking Djokovic, are you up for this, do you want it play? Why

:27:52. > :27:55.are you still playing? Why? You have to understand that about yourself.

:27:56. > :27:59.Why was it? He wanted to win. The winning. He is such a great athlete.

:28:00. > :28:05.Another one who is phenomenal. His balance, hisibility. Second to none.

:28:06. > :28:11.He is amazing. I call him physically a freak of nature. Most people would

:28:12. > :28:15.get injured the way he is sliding on the court, for sure. They have ankle

:28:16. > :28:21.breaks and knee breaks, he gets up and goes back, because he does so

:28:22. > :28:24.much stretching, so much off-kouft work. -- off-court work. Hard

:28:25. > :28:29.physical labour almost It is paying the price. A lot of players go in

:28:30. > :28:35.and out paying the price. He does it daly, the same way Federer, Murray,

:28:36. > :28:41.all of them. You wake up in the morning, even if you don't feel like

:28:42. > :28:44.it, you get out and have the discipline. That's what people don't

:28:45. > :28:49.see. And an dry Aggassi, I understand why he has gone to him.

:28:50. > :28:54.He had a similar dip in his career and he reinvented himself. Maybe he

:28:55. > :28:59.is hoping that from him? Yes Andre won more majors in his 30s than

:29:00. > :29:03.before. Novak turned 30 a couple of weeks ago. That's the discussions

:29:04. > :29:07.they have - what kept you going, what was the motivation? Also, Andre

:29:08. > :29:11.is very much into his foundation as is Novak Djokovic, you combine the

:29:12. > :29:14.reasons why you want it add another Wimbledon Championship because you

:29:15. > :29:17.want to help others. The message is spreading across, it is more

:29:18. > :29:24.powerful if you are the winner. #r Do you know the platform that tennis

:29:25. > :29:30.players have if you are at the top. We have a global platform to do good

:29:31. > :29:35.and make this world a better place and that's what they are doing. And,

:29:36. > :29:40.he just needs to come in with confidence, win a couple of matches

:29:41. > :29:44.and everyone will forget what happened this year? This is an

:29:45. > :29:49.important tournament to decide how was 2017. You know, if he loses in

:29:50. > :29:53.the quarter-final before, the time is running out to make this a

:29:54. > :29:58.reasonable year, even for his standard so he needs this one. He

:29:59. > :30:07.needs to go ideally all the way and then he can say - I did come back.

:30:08. > :30:14.You have to remember when this tournament is. It is pivotal, right

:30:15. > :30:17.in the middle of the year or a little later but basically the

:30:18. > :30:22.middle. The French and Wimbledon. This is where the year point, it

:30:23. > :30:27.changes everything. If you can win one of those or do well. Then you

:30:28. > :30:31.have the US Open. The players are tired by then. It is very

:30:32. > :30:36.interesting. If you get going now maybe you haven't done well, you

:30:37. > :30:43.will do better by the end of the year. Thank you so much.

:30:44. > :30:55.Alex Ward had a wrist injury and was out for a few months. His ranking is

:30:56. > :31:01.at 869. He has won through the qualifiers to take his place. The

:31:02. > :31:09.first thing to do is wish Susan are very happy birthday. It is a

:31:10. > :31:14.significant one. What a way to spend your 60th birthday, at Wimbledon! It

:31:15. > :31:19.is the best present ever. I am still getting over it and enjoying it. I

:31:20. > :31:24.hope it will continue all day. 12 months ago you came to Wimbledon

:31:25. > :31:29.with Alex and I understand it was quite emotional for you. It was. It

:31:30. > :31:33.was a commendation of him trying to get better at tennis and trying to

:31:34. > :31:40.get to the top and increase his ranking. The fact he got to play,

:31:41. > :31:48.the pinnacle here, is marvellous. It is an outpouring of all those years

:31:49. > :31:54.of hoping the best for him. Given idea of the struggles he has had to

:31:55. > :31:58.enjoy with injury, support, except. Over the years he has had quite a

:31:59. > :32:08.few injuries since he has been playing professionally. His ankle,

:32:09. > :32:17.and he had to come back on crutches. He has had a knee operation. Various

:32:18. > :32:23.stress fractures in his arm. He has just got over some problems in his

:32:24. > :32:32.wrist. He really had to struggle financially. I did not know about

:32:33. > :32:36.that. All through the decision, God bless him, that he wants to carry on

:32:37. > :32:42.playing and he wants to do his best. He feels he has a lot to give and

:32:43. > :32:48.achieve. As his mum, how do you feel when you see him going through those

:32:49. > :32:53.struggles, to see him here competing against fellow Brit on the bigger

:32:54. > :33:02.stage? It is wonderful. I am overjoyed for him. I admire him. The

:33:03. > :33:06.fact he has carried himself so well. I think he has probably shielded me

:33:07. > :33:16.for that he keeps his worries to himself and does not let me know. I

:33:17. > :33:25.hope you and he have the best day today. Thank you very much. Quite a

:33:26. > :33:30.story! These are the guys who were struggling to make ends meet survey

:33:31. > :33:36.could continue to play on the circuit. This match means a huge

:33:37. > :33:43.amount to Alex Ward. He has come through as a qualifier. He has never

:33:44. > :33:53.won a match at Wimbledon. He is break of serve up.

:33:54. > :34:06.New balls in play for Ward. Just the one break in the opening game.

:34:07. > :34:13.He has been very nervous. Still breathing very heavily in the last

:34:14. > :34:17.game. Struggling to settle and low on confidence. He does not have a

:34:18. > :34:42.coach. They parted company very recently.

:34:43. > :35:01.By comparison, it looks like he has played him many times before. He did

:35:02. > :35:05.play after competing against Goffin in the main part of the draw. That

:35:06. > :35:10.is what coming through qualifying does view. He already feels like he

:35:11. > :35:19.has won a tournament by getting here. -- does for you. Sometimes you

:35:20. > :35:27.need an outside motivational force. We heard from his mother earlier on.

:35:28. > :35:34.He had maxed out his credit cards. He has ?35,000. He can probably

:35:35. > :35:35.clear a lot of it, maybe all of it, and take his mother out for dinner

:35:36. > :35:55.on her birthday. It is a great story. Mother on the

:35:56. > :35:56.right. Best birthday present she could ever have wished for, she

:35:57. > :36:19.says. Just errors like that from Edmund.

:36:20. > :36:27.There have been a number of matches that have gone away from him at the

:36:28. > :36:31.end. His focus. In a match like this committee is overwhelming favourite.

:36:32. > :36:36.There is pressure. When he came on to court, he did not look like he

:36:37. > :36:43.was ranked 50 in the world and his opponent was in the 800s.

:36:44. > :36:56.He played a very shaky first service game because of nerves. Alexander

:36:57. > :37:02.Ward is embracing the situation. During his Wimbledon career, Kyle

:37:03. > :37:08.Edmund has not embraced it. He has lost in the first round the last

:37:09. > :37:17.four years. That does not help his cause. He has lost confidence

:37:18. > :37:23.recently. Every time he misses his first serve, Ward is stepping in and

:37:24. > :37:30.trying to get the first out. Very attack minded. He is opening up his

:37:31. > :37:38.shoulders and having a go. He is not afraid at all. Kyle Edmund has only

:37:39. > :38:01.lost one point behind his first serve.

:38:02. > :38:12.Full house on Court three. 2000 seats and many of free fraud. Many

:38:13. > :38:38.rushed here when the gates opened. -- many of them a free for all.

:38:39. > :38:51.Great work ethic. If you speak to anybody who knows anything about

:38:52. > :39:33.him. He will have to serve out the

:39:34. > :39:38.opening set, Ward. After everything we have talked about, the litany of

:39:39. > :39:46.injuries, it has been one thing after another. Here he is at 27. He

:39:47. > :39:53.still has a huge desire to keep playing. That is why Wimbledon is so

:39:54. > :39:57.important to him. To have qualified and make the money. That literally

:39:58. > :40:03.can pay for his expenses throughout the year. When you see the prize

:40:04. > :40:10.money announced, some think it is way too much money. These players

:40:11. > :40:16.need that money to pay for expensive, without hiring a coach.

:40:17. > :40:23.It is an expensive game, tennis. You see what the top players are making

:40:24. > :40:28.that at the bottom, not nearly so much. You have to admire Ward. He

:40:29. > :40:34.loves it. What a great result to qualify. He has a chance to take a

:40:35. > :41:04.set lead. He has only lost one point behind

:41:05. > :42:43.his first serve. That is what the second serve diffs

:42:44. > :43:10.-- deserved. In the middle of the box. First break point for Edmund.

:43:11. > :43:19.That was a bad mistake from Kyle Edmund. Played eight couple of

:43:20. > :43:22.really good points. Gets the break point down second serve and floats

:43:23. > :43:38.the backhand long. You come in with little confidence

:43:39. > :43:44.and to make an error like that, on your first break point. It just

:43:45. > :44:11.amplifies everything. Absolutely. Set point for Ward.

:44:12. > :44:28.Mum's Thursday is going rather well at the moment. -- mum's birthday.

:44:29. > :44:36.With his history coming into this, he will leave no stone unturned. No

:44:37. > :44:44.room for nerves will stop he lost his way a bit with the forehand of

:44:45. > :44:50.Kyle Edmund but the stats are impressive. That is low for Kyle

:44:51. > :44:56.Edmund. Total force errors about the same. Ward has more winners. He has

:44:57. > :45:01.been very aggressive. Any second serves he has attacks have been

:45:02. > :45:08.impressive. The good ratio on first service points one. Ward with 58%

:45:09. > :45:15.winning on his second serve point. That is a good ratio. It is very

:45:16. > :45:20.solid. He came into the net six times and won five out of six. You

:45:21. > :45:27.could see right from beginning Ward's hand was to put pressure on

:45:28. > :45:31.Edmund right away of his serve. I am going to get the first strike in

:45:32. > :45:37.that is what he did to create the first break. He is eager. He does

:45:38. > :45:41.not look nervous at all. He is enjoying the occasion. Their big

:45:42. > :45:45.start to the second set for Kyle Edmund. He must re-establish himself

:45:46. > :46:14.as he was nervous in the second set. In a way, this is the worst possible

:46:15. > :46:27.draw for Edmund. He is British but ranked 869. He is a set down.

:46:28. > :46:36.He has lost to Dolgopolov before. He has not won a set at Wimbledon. That

:46:37. > :47:02.is amazing. Eye-macro double faults have wanted

:47:03. > :47:21.him at times. He does not get many opportunities

:47:22. > :48:36.to use Hawk-Eye. He think of things with Ward, for

:48:37. > :48:41.example, playing in Tunisia in the futures event. He had to buy some

:48:42. > :48:46.balls to hit with. That is what he is used to. How he has embraced this

:48:47. > :48:48.today, everything else he has gone through, it is literally remarkable.

:48:49. > :49:06.It is. He is getting new balls every nine

:49:07. > :49:17.games. That was superb. The forehand was well measured. A good forehand.

:49:18. > :49:26.Economic ul. It looked solid. Got it back nice and early. Gets a very

:49:27. > :49:27.good follow-through. Always looking to move forward afterwards. A good

:49:28. > :49:58.instinct. He also has not been afraid to trade

:49:59. > :50:31.blows with the Kyle Edmund forehand. A big shot. A world-class shot.

:50:32. > :50:44.Never even won a match on tour, this man.

:50:45. > :50:52.He looks so calm. He has had a lot of injuries and other things. It is

:50:53. > :50:56.surprisingly new see how he plays he has not won on tour. He has the

:50:57. > :51:16.game, certainly. His father was terrific when he was

:51:17. > :51:18.interviewed. I really don't have any part to play. Helping and supporting

:51:19. > :51:50.and being a shoulder. The ball was called in. That was

:51:51. > :51:54.wishful thinking. I think he was just enjoying Hawk-Eye. I don't

:51:55. > :52:59.think he realises you only get three of them.

:53:00. > :53:13.They say the let's even out. I have never agreed with that. It has to be

:53:14. > :53:32.the most insincere apology in tennis. Sorry about that.

:53:33. > :53:51.That forehand is a monster. It keeps him in front. SUE BARKER: We will be

:53:52. > :53:52.right back with this match but there is plenty happening today in the

:53:53. > :54:02.Championships. Cockayne Akers has been out since

:54:03. > :54:16.2015. He even thought about retirement. He beat Milos Raonic.

:54:17. > :54:23.Del Potro has taken the opening set. On Court 12, as seed in trouble. No

:54:24. > :54:28.great surprise. Richard Gasquet is playing David Ferrer. He is 5-3 up

:54:29. > :54:33.in the opening set. You feel that will go the distance. That match is

:54:34. > :54:41.available on the red button or on the BBC Sport website. This was out

:54:42. > :54:48.on Court ten. Novak Djokovic is completing his warm up. Just as he

:54:49. > :54:53.did down at Eastbourne when he went to play their last week, signing

:54:54. > :54:58.autographs for having self is taken. He really does give back to the fans

:54:59. > :55:02.will stop he loves going to Eastbourne. He met seagulls for the

:55:03. > :55:07.first time. He said that was a little bit strange. We will see

:55:08. > :55:12.Novak later on on Centre Court. ' what number three. -- back to court

:55:13. > :55:56.number three. As we mentioned earlier, it is not

:55:57. > :56:02.the biggest serve but it is accurate and varied. Not a bad serve. He will

:56:03. > :56:04.not serve many aces with it. He can set himself up and take over the

:56:05. > :56:59.rally. Like that. He has settled down a bit. Two bad

:57:00. > :57:59.forehands in rainbow. -- a row. He is challenging the call. Another

:58:00. > :58:11.one for Hawk-Eye to look at. Not close enough. There is not a bad

:58:12. > :58:13.court here. It used to be the site of the old graveyard court, number

:58:14. > :58:28.to. The expression of changes with

:58:29. > :59:47.Edmund. -- never changes. The serve is not as big a weapon as

:59:48. > :59:51.his forehand but it is a very potent serve. He can get a lot of three

:59:52. > :00:07.points with it and build his game around it. Keeps his nose in front.

:00:08. > :00:19.Kyle Edmund 's coat shirts -- without a coach at the moment. Does

:00:20. > :00:22.the modern game become too reliant on coaches? Do they lose

:00:23. > :00:29.responsibility for themselves in matchplay? They do. More so on the

:00:30. > :00:34.women's circuit. The coaches are allowed to come on court. I think

:00:35. > :00:41.the reliance is even more. That is the case. You have to know what is

:00:42. > :00:46.in yourself. With some might Kyle Edmund, he has weapons in his game.

:00:47. > :00:53.What he does not have at the moment is Plan B or plan C. He'd does not

:00:54. > :00:58.defend well. He is good when he is aggressive and on but, particularly

:00:59. > :01:04.when he is losing matches, so many places he looks brittle. You

:01:05. > :01:09.concentrate on your weapons because that is what will take you further

:01:10. > :01:13.but you have to focus on other things of the game. He needs to

:01:14. > :01:18.learn to defend better and have more of a presence on the court. It is

:01:19. > :01:23.not that he does not try in matches but he seems to rack set sometimes

:01:24. > :01:28.when a result is not going his way and he is being outplayed rather

:01:29. > :01:32.than trying something different. What about expressing himself? That

:01:33. > :01:40.is what I mean, presents. Looking like he is 50 in world or higher. He

:01:41. > :01:44.does have a bit of a step to him in this set. There is a bit of a

:01:45. > :01:49.different about him. He is looking like he is ready. In their first

:01:50. > :02:12.set, he did not give it away but he was very tight at the beginning.

:02:13. > :02:20.That was better, that sliced backhand back. Got there nice and

:02:21. > :04:25.early and got it back deep. Good start to the game for him.

:04:26. > :04:56.Brilliant. What a way it get the break.

:04:57. > :05:06.He did well here. An excellent full cross-court. He stayed well on that

:05:07. > :05:13.one. That's what you want to see, getting pumped up.

:05:14. > :05:56.! Few have tried. Tim Henman went through that year, didn't he.

:05:57. > :06:02.Andre Agassi keeping an eye on this. Trying to get out of the sun, mind.

:06:03. > :07:23.Got to put a hat on. Novak Djokovic is in this quarter.

:07:24. > :08:55.Is it Agassi's observations, homework?

:08:56. > :09:04.A man interested in the right there, Leon Smith. In charge of British

:09:05. > :09:10.tennis and Davis Cup captain. He is trying to help Kyle, of course but

:09:11. > :09:16.all-British in this match, he will take a further seat back to have a

:09:17. > :09:21.neutral look. He has a job on his hands at the moment. If Alexander

:09:22. > :09:27.Ward continues with the form he has, he will be looking for a Davis Cup

:09:28. > :09:33.place, why not? It is wide open now on the British team. Obviously Andy

:09:34. > :09:38.and some matches he is not going to play but after that, it's quite wide

:09:39. > :09:44.open if you take Kyle and after that, there's a lot of players vying

:09:45. > :09:49.for a spot. Scotty Lloyd, obviously coming in to take over at the LTA in

:09:50. > :09:58.January next year. A few changes coming.

:09:59. > :12:19.Not too sure about his shot selection there, Kyle Edmund. A big

:12:20. > :12:41.point. He was off balance and tried for a winner down the

:12:42. > :12:49.Just gone off the boil in the last two or three games, Ward. Just

:12:50. > :12:53.making a lot more errors now. I guess that's the difference between

:12:54. > :12:55.Futures when you can get away with that, but not here. Exactly. You

:12:56. > :13:02.have to keep that level going. He hung in there. A bit shaky at the

:13:03. > :13:41.start of that game. Let's see how Edmund copes with

:13:42. > :13:44.serving out this second set. A few hiccups, didn't he, Ward, serving

:13:45. > :14:13.out the first. Well, he really pulled down on that

:14:14. > :14:18.one. He'll need to take a little bit of time after that. Just get

:14:19. > :14:20.yourself ready again, visualise where you are going to serve this

:14:21. > :14:37.ball. Good depth here from Edmund in this

:14:38. > :16:38.rally. ! The pressure he was putting on

:16:39. > :16:45.Edmund there, close to the baseline, taking the ball on. A good point

:16:46. > :16:48.there for Ward. He needs a good serve here, doesn't he? He certainly

:16:49. > :17:06.does. Oh - that forehand there from

:17:07. > :17:12.Edmund, so much spin on the ball that it slowed it up and gave Ward a

:17:13. > :17:29.lot of time on that passing shot. Really should have made that.

:17:30. > :18:24.66 minutes in the all-British affair, and it is 1-1 sets. SUE

:18:25. > :18:31.BARKER: So this will turn into an endurance test. We will be back with

:18:32. > :18:34.the match in a moment. Look around the grounds who is this on the

:18:35. > :18:39.practise court? That looks like uncle Tony so there is Rafa. Looking

:18:40. > :18:46.very relaxed. He had an amazing French Open, winning a 10th title.

:18:47. > :18:51.Losing just 35 games. And he looked impressive on the grass here

:18:52. > :18:55.yesterday, losing just six games. Rafa in form and enjoying himself

:18:56. > :19:01.out on the practise courts. He is certainly a danger.

:19:02. > :19:05.Venus Williams on the practise court today. Following her emotional press

:19:06. > :19:10.conference yesterday when she talked about the car accident that happened

:19:11. > :19:16.last month. I can't believe how she is coping with all of that and

:19:17. > :19:19.playing here but she is a contender in this very open ladies

:19:20. > :19:26.Championship. A day off today. She'll be back on court tomorrow.

:19:27. > :19:33.Sitting there with her mum, who is always courtside with her. Such

:19:34. > :19:42.family support for Venus and Serena, wherever they play and here is Jo

:19:43. > :19:48.Konta. And how impressive she was yesterday, winning her match. It was

:19:49. > :19:52.a player she lost to at the French Open. No wonder she is smiling.

:19:53. > :19:57.Looking very much at home on the grass and as we talk about this very

:19:58. > :20:01.open ladies Championship. Will we have a British winner? She is

:20:02. > :20:07.capable of it. She has had a terrific year and playing very well.

:20:08. > :20:12.So that's Jo Konta who will be back in action again tomorrow. So that's

:20:13. > :20:21.what is happening out there. Now back to the match. COMMENTATOR: One

:20:22. > :20:26.break was enough to secure that last set. So now Ward needs to

:20:27. > :21:23.re-establish himself. That was a little bit closer than he

:21:24. > :21:31.intended. The width of the forehand there, the pace, a low ball he had

:21:32. > :21:39.to go up and attack, Kyle Edmund and you can see with the grip change, he

:21:40. > :21:41.got the racket head under the ball so well there and that extreme whip

:21:42. > :22:08.brought it up nice and high. You can see the difference, the

:22:09. > :22:15.weight of shot from Kyle Edmund is taking his toll a little bit on

:22:16. > :22:20.Ward. The depth from the middle of the second set onwards, he is

:22:21. > :22:22.starting to hit the ball very close to the line. Always pressure on Ward

:22:23. > :22:39.now. He is starting to relax now. Well,

:22:40. > :22:48.actually it is impressive because, as you said at the beginning and you

:22:49. > :22:54.are absolutely right, there is a lot of pressure on him on this match. He

:22:55. > :22:57.hasn't won at Wimbledon. He is supposed to win this match bishops

:22:58. > :23:01.the rankings, comfortably and Alexander Ward is a gritty player.

:23:02. > :23:07.He has come through qualifier. It is not a nice match to play in some

:23:08. > :23:13.ways for Kyle Edmund. I don't think he handled the first set well. But

:23:14. > :23:19.now he is on top and looking like he is enjoying himself a little bit.

:23:20. > :24:44.Having a bit more fun out here. A whole different body language.

:24:45. > :24:53.He has really lost his way at the moment. Eight points lost in this

:24:54. > :25:02.set. The forehand that was so good in the first set now is not finding

:25:03. > :25:07.its target. He has lost a bit of confidence. What does he have to do?

:25:08. > :25:11.Go back it basics, much would the ball, keep feet moving, go back to

:25:12. > :25:15.the beginning? Make the margins smaller, don't go quite as much

:25:16. > :25:22.until he gets the rhythm back. Don't get negative. Still hit the ball

:25:23. > :25:28.hard but don't go for as much. Don't go for the lines as much as he has

:25:29. > :25:34.been doing, until he gets confidence back.

:25:35. > :25:44.Three out of five is a very long journey, something else he has no

:25:45. > :25:46.experience of. Ye, ebbs and flow and the best of five-set matches,

:25:47. > :26:37.sometimes your form can drop a bit. Oh, I thought for one minute he was

:26:38. > :26:44.going to full-length drive on that one. Had it been Dimitrov or Boris

:26:45. > :26:48.Becker, this would've been a full-length dive, right here, now

:26:49. > :26:55.they would've gone for a full-length dive. Come on, go. Oh, no. Did he

:26:56. > :26:59.think about it? I don't think he wanted to dirty the whites. He

:27:00. > :27:08.wanted to keep nice and clean. You know. It's Wimbledon.

:27:09. > :27:21.Lovely. He He struggled with that. He was getting caught, hitting it

:27:22. > :27:44.late. And two big backhands in this game. That was superb.

:27:45. > :27:53.Slipped. Very deep in the court there. It's just the energy levels

:27:54. > :27:58.have changed so much between the two. Certainly at the beginning Ward

:27:59. > :28:03.was the one that was sort of taking the ball on, close to the baseline,

:28:04. > :28:14.being aggressive. Now Edmund has taken over. Another break point.

:28:15. > :28:30.Four games in a row for Edmund. Double break. Another clenched fist.

:28:31. > :28:39.If he makes those improvements with his mind and the defence and so on,

:28:40. > :28:45.how good do you think Kyle Edmund could be? Well, I think he's got, if

:28:46. > :28:52.you look at the technical side, the way he hits the ball, I think you

:28:53. > :28:59.could say he gets top 20. I think he's got that - the shell, the large

:29:00. > :29:05.part of his game but there's so much involved in it and if the mind -

:29:06. > :29:09.that has to be, that's if not the biggest weapon, it is certainly

:29:10. > :29:13.right up there. The mental side of the game, you know, the fight,

:29:14. > :29:17.knowing when to change your game, win at all costs, dig deep. Never

:29:18. > :29:23.accept the fact that you are going to be beaten, all that stuff, the

:29:24. > :29:28.defensive side, it is huge, it is not easy to improve. And he has to

:29:29. > :29:32.improve that big time, to go with the big boys. But game-wise,

:29:33. > :29:37.technically looking at the way he hits the ball, he's potentially top

:29:38. > :29:49.20. But there's a lot more in it than that.

:29:50. > :29:58.Can you, imagine, though, if he can win this match, what a relief it is

:29:59. > :30:04.going to be for him after his Wimbledon record. I mean, it is a

:30:05. > :30:09.whole different ball game if he can get a win under his belt here.

:30:10. > :30:11.Sometimes that only takes one shot to bring back confidence.

:30:12. > :30:27.Absolutely. Let alone a win. So much more aggressive now but

:30:28. > :30:28.aggressive in the right way. Not wildly aggressive. This is

:30:29. > :30:44.controlled aggression. Called out by the umpire, not the

:30:45. > :31:13.line judge. Suddenly, the rankings look about

:31:14. > :31:17.right. Exactly. Amazing how he has turned it around. All credit to him.

:31:18. > :31:25.It certainly did not look this way in the beginning. I was critical,

:31:26. > :31:29.the way he was walking around the way he was conducting himself out on

:31:30. > :31:31.the court with no presence that he has changed it around. A lot of

:31:32. > :32:19.credit. He's suddenly looks really weary. He

:32:20. > :32:56.does. You are right. That is the sort of presence he has

:32:57. > :33:43.to have. That is the sort of game Kyle Edmund has to play, a big game.

:33:44. > :34:00.Still nothing happening for board. He lost the last five games. Three

:34:01. > :34:31.from four on the break points, Edmund.

:34:32. > :34:39.The crowd have gone away from the match a little bit. There is an air

:34:40. > :34:45.of inevitability about it at the moment.

:34:46. > :35:03.That will get them going a little bit.

:35:04. > :35:12.John, this man had so many injuries. Ankle problems, stress fractures.

:35:13. > :35:20.Knees surgery. This time last year he got his ranking up to a height of

:35:21. > :35:26.242. Then he found out he had problems with tendons in his wrist.

:35:27. > :36:00.He has not had the best of luck. He is such a hard worker. He is a

:36:01. > :36:01.grinder. He puts 100% into it every day, whenever he can. When you have

:36:02. > :36:02.a catalogue of injuries, trying to make the breakthrough, going all

:36:03. > :36:08.around the world to scrap for points and your body breaking down... He

:36:09. > :36:13.has the game. He will go up. He just looks a bit tired, a bit flat in the

:36:14. > :36:17.last few games. I am not sure if it is just the accumulation of the

:36:18. > :36:21.qualifying and all the press and stuff that has gone with it which

:36:22. > :36:30.has zapped his energy. I do not know.

:36:31. > :37:05.Edmund has to-macro challenges remaining. I am not sure what he was

:37:06. > :37:11.trying to do. He came in fast and was trying to hit a winner down the

:37:12. > :37:13.line. He cannot afford to let the line wonder, even with a break of

:37:14. > :38:02.serve. That is the best shot he has hit for

:38:03. > :38:41.a long while. He has still only lost five points

:38:42. > :38:45.and first-served, 32 from 37 now. It is impressive. Just over half his

:38:46. > :39:05.first serves going in. A change of balls. 23 Celsius today,

:39:06. > :39:12.not much of a breeze. Perfect playing conditions. A bit cloudy as

:39:13. > :39:21.well, which is also good for the players. They don't like sunshine

:39:22. > :39:32.beaming out of them. Serving issues when that is glaring at you. This is

:39:33. > :40:59.almost perfect. The new balls, Ward serving to stay in the set. 1-5.

:41:00. > :41:11.Well done, a good hold. Edmund is going to have the serve out for the

:41:12. > :41:15.set. And we will be back to see if Edmund

:41:16. > :41:19.can serve out the set. Plenty is happening here, beginning on Centre

:41:20. > :41:24.Court and Court Number One. This is vice chair's runner up Angelique

:41:25. > :41:28.Kerber leading the way, the first match on Centre Court in the absence

:41:29. > :41:34.of the defending champion Serena Williams. She is the top seed

:41:35. > :41:38.against the qualifier from the United States, Irina Falconi. So if

:41:39. > :41:42.you want to watch this match, you can do, it is on the red button.

:41:43. > :41:49.Hoping not for the same fake as the French Open when she lost in the

:41:50. > :41:52.opening round. This is Thanasi Kokkinakis who has taken the second

:41:53. > :41:57.set 6-3 against Juan Martin del Potro. So many injuries, it is great

:41:58. > :42:03.to see him playing well again. That match has a long way to go, the

:42:04. > :42:07.featured match on the red button. And David Foret is battling on, he

:42:08. > :42:14.was ranked as high as three in the world, that has dropped to 39 --

:42:15. > :42:23.David Ferrer. He is two sets to love up against Richard Gasquet. And last

:42:24. > :42:27.year's runner up Milos Raonic starting his match, not the best

:42:28. > :42:30.year but that serve will win him some quick points. Available on the

:42:31. > :43:33.red button and on the BBC website. But back we go.

:43:34. > :45:34.UMPIRE: Challenging the call to the right of baseline.

:45:35. > :46:54.The depth on the first backhand and this one is excellent. Extended so

:46:55. > :47:53.well on that shot. Since losing their first set, Kyle

:47:54. > :48:03.Edmund has conceded just five games and moves into a to-macro sets to

:48:04. > :48:18.one lead. A couple of results to bring new in the meantime. Zverev is

:48:19. > :48:23.through. He won in straight sets. He put out Andy Murray at the

:48:24. > :48:28.Australian Open. His brother will be in action later today. That is

:48:29. > :48:32.something he has in common with Andy Murray, having a brother on the

:48:33. > :48:44.tour. A fine win in straight sets for him. The 24th seed is also

:48:45. > :48:50.through. She is a former quarterfinalist. She put out Jo

:48:51. > :48:55.Konta at Edgbaston. Now she is coached by Pat Cash. Pat is in her

:48:56. > :48:57.corner. There he is watching. I am sure he will be absolutely delighted

:48:58. > :49:10.with that result. A lot of matches going on but on

:49:11. > :49:16.Court Number 10 we have seen over Djokovic play. Now there is a big

:49:17. > :49:20.crowd around because Roger Federer is out there. He missed the

:49:21. > :49:30.clay-court season Brett comes in here with some grass court play. --

:49:31. > :49:36.but comes in here. He is many people's favourite for the title.

:49:37. > :49:50.You would not bet against him. He has only lost two matches. He will

:49:51. > :49:51.be on Centre Court later today for the back is what is happening

:49:52. > :50:33.elsewhere. He can ill afford to lose the first

:50:34. > :50:38.game in this set, Ward. He knows the pressure that is being put on him. A

:50:39. > :50:40.worrying time for him. He has to somehow dig in and hold this service

:50:41. > :51:00.game. He has just gone right off the boil.

:51:01. > :51:03.45 minutes, he is not the same player he was. He seems to have lost

:51:04. > :51:30.that sparked. Is it his turn, Ward, to be

:51:31. > :51:39.bellowing out, come on, or do something to get hyped up? He is

:51:40. > :51:43.always walking around, attacking the ball. The second serve doing some

:51:44. > :51:56.damage. At the moment it is just flat. That is better.

:51:57. > :52:03.He must give everybody here, most importantly his opponent, the body

:52:04. > :52:05.language that I am just going to fight like I have never fought

:52:06. > :52:45.before. It is a very comfortable scoreboard

:52:46. > :52:51.now. You can see the difference, even when they walk to the chair. It

:52:52. > :52:59.is so apparent. I am sure Ward does not realise that that he is now

:53:00. > :53:05.walking about the speed I ran. Very slowly trudging. He did not sit down

:53:06. > :53:12.there but it is all sort of laboured. Edmund is just sort of

:53:13. > :54:27.skipping away to get ready for the next point.

:54:28. > :54:38.That is what he was doing earlier on. Second serve, he was aggressive,

:54:39. > :54:45.but in a good way. He was not taking wild swings at the ball. He was not

:54:46. > :54:52.getting ahead in the rally for a while.

:54:53. > :56:34.It is a runaway really, isn't it? It is. It has become so easy now for

:56:35. > :56:40.Edmund, dictating play. So much more pace, controlling the points. You

:56:41. > :56:53.never know what will happen in the best of a five set match.

:56:54. > :57:04.That ball for Ward, it looked like the legs were weary. Getting out

:57:05. > :57:15.wide to the forehand in the middle of the net. No spring.

:57:16. > :57:22.He was busy after losing in prequalifying. Ward was arranging

:57:23. > :57:27.all the tournaments. He got the call that he got a wildcard into

:57:28. > :57:37.qualities and had to change his plans.

:57:38. > :57:47.He was not quick getting out to the ball. He is playing completely

:57:48. > :57:56.within himself stop he is on cruise control. He has done so well to turn

:57:57. > :58:05.it around so quickly. He did so well at the beginning.

:58:06. > :58:11.He was so nervous he was struggling to breathe. Coaches talk about that

:58:12. > :58:40.a lot. Deep breaths all the time. Four from ten on the break points

:58:41. > :59:15.now. He is on the verge now of his first

:59:16. > :59:35.match win at Wimbledon, Kyle Edmund. If he gets this done, it will do the

:59:36. > :59:40.power of good. What a relief him if he gets this win under his belt at

:59:41. > :59:46.them was in full all of a sudden he will love the tournament. I am sure

:59:47. > :59:49.he would say, I love playing at Wimbledon you lose four first rounds

:59:50. > :59:55.in a row and it is not your favourite Tuan and, whatever you

:59:56. > :00:04.say. Suddenly you win a match and love this place. -- your favourite

:00:05. > :00:09.tournament. That was a superb backhand by anybody's standards. He

:00:10. > :00:15.has hit a few of those today. Got good extension will stop a lot of

:00:16. > :00:20.power on that side. It is not just his forehand, that is his big weapon

:00:21. > :00:31.but the backhand as well, when that is on, it is dangerous.

:00:32. > :00:39.Kyle Edmund has never shied away from hard work. Andy Murray has been

:00:40. > :00:41.generous with his time of season training with him. I think the first

:00:42. > :01:06.time, it was, oh, that training! It is a shame the wheels have come

:01:07. > :02:07.off the way they have for Ward, so promising in that opening set. Yes.

:02:08. > :02:26.When you get to 40-0, the great players good at securing that game

:02:27. > :02:30.and they almost treat the point like a break point against them. Great

:02:31. > :02:34.players are greedy with every point, every point is valuable, no matter

:02:35. > :02:46.what the score is. Getting to that finishing touches

:02:47. > :03:02.time. Mr Ward has two challenges

:03:03. > :03:59.remaining. Well done! I love that rally! A

:04:00. > :04:06.crowd pleaser. Yes, the other way. Still makes the volley. Here he

:04:07. > :04:09.goes. I'm going to charge over the other side. No, the ball is that

:04:10. > :05:21.way, OK. He did well to stop that ball like

:05:22. > :05:25.that, it wasn't easy, there was not much pace on the ball to begin with.

:05:26. > :06:40.A good approach. It is a fabulous hold from love- 40.

:06:41. > :07:03.On the scoreboard. I guess one of the big things on his

:07:04. > :07:09.wish list is being injury free for a pretty good run of time. Exactly, it

:07:10. > :07:14.is tough enough in his position grinding out these challenges,

:07:15. > :07:20.futures. Just trying to claw back some points to get his ranking up.

:07:21. > :07:24.And then your body breaks down with obscure or injuries and things. To

:07:25. > :07:29.put it mildly, it is frustrating. Bad enough if you are a top player,

:07:30. > :07:35.but you have security, he has no security. He is literally playing to

:07:36. > :07:41.pay his bills. It is tough, it is not easy. He doesn't have the

:07:42. > :07:46.luxury, his career earnings is $189,000, to take a busier with him

:07:47. > :07:52.and to maintain his body. So he will become more injury prone as a result

:07:53. > :07:56.anyway -- to take a physiotherapist. Yes, this Wimbledon is a gift. He

:07:57. > :08:01.lost in the previous qualifier, now he is in the first round, he can pay

:08:02. > :08:16.some bills. Some expenses for the rest of the year. It is not easy.

:08:17. > :08:19.Edmund, 4-1 up in the fourth with a double break after one hour and 15

:08:20. > :09:09.-- 59 minutes. Challenging.

:09:10. > :09:33.UMPIRE: The ball was called out. APPLAUSE. That is a great call! You

:09:34. > :09:41.have got Hawk-Eye and 2020 on the line. Unbelievable! Smiles all

:09:42. > :10:18.round. Back to where he was in the first

:10:19. > :10:26.set on that point. That is what has been missing. Controlled aggression.

:10:27. > :10:34.Good length here and he steps in, he cracks the ball away. It would be

:10:35. > :11:31.some comeback, wouldn't it? If you don't hit your ground stroke

:11:32. > :11:36.in the right area playing the Kyle Edmund, if it is not deep enough and

:11:37. > :11:39.he takes over with that forehand, it is a big weapon. That was a huge

:11:40. > :11:54.forehand he hit. A game away from his first win at

:11:55. > :13:03.Wimbledon. How much better has his return of

:13:04. > :13:08.serve been after that first serve? It has picked up in the last set and

:13:09. > :13:18.a half and his depth has been so much better as well, Kyle Edmund.

:13:19. > :13:32.It is an amazing angle. Edmund is pretty confident this one is wide.

:13:33. > :13:52.He is right. You have got to love Hawk-Eye, what an innovation! He

:13:53. > :14:27.stood tall on that and here he is. With three match points.

:14:28. > :14:37.Edmund wins his very first match at Wimbledon. Just of the two hours

:14:38. > :14:42.against a man around 869. At British start for the British number two.

:14:43. > :14:47.The fairy tale of the qualifier Alexander Ward comes to an end. The

:14:48. > :14:52.story maybe it's just beginning to for Edmund. This is a very fine

:14:53. > :14:55.performance at a dodgy start and he was on a hiding to nothing Kyle

:14:56. > :15:01.Edmund going up against another fellow Brit with a ranking in the

:15:02. > :15:06.800s. Everybody expects him to win, he has not win a match at Wimbledon.

:15:07. > :15:11.A lot of pressure, he started badly, a set down, but he had the faith in

:15:12. > :15:15.his ability to come back. Is game improved. He started being more

:15:16. > :15:19.aggressive in the right way, his serve going better, his backhand

:15:20. > :15:24.down the line was awesome. This will do him a power of good. He's not the

:15:25. > :15:31.most emotional chap but I bet inside, he is saying, well done. We

:15:32. > :15:34.have got that monkey off the back, let's go forwards. Your final

:15:35. > :15:39.thoughts for Alexander Ward? A great effort, he just ran out of gas and

:15:40. > :15:45.he looked a bit flat and is tired. He has made a bit of money now and

:15:46. > :15:50.hopefully he can get back out on the circuit and push his ranking up.

:15:51. > :15:55.He's got a lot of game. He works hard. He is a difficult player to

:15:56. > :16:01.beat. But today, he just ran out of steam, understandable. He can

:16:02. > :16:06.certainly afford to buy his mother a birthday present now! Yes, about

:16:07. > :16:10.time! Not the complete celebration she would have hoped for but a

:16:11. > :16:19.special day for the Ward family. Absolutely.

:16:20. > :16:33.APPLAUSE. A big hand for this all British

:16:34. > :16:39.affair. Edmund, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, he must be thrilled.

:16:40. > :16:45.After that first set, how proud you of the fightback and your first win

:16:46. > :16:51.at Wimbledon? It is nice to get my first win. The first set was tricky.

:16:52. > :16:58.Even the first point, he came out and really attacked me. After I got

:16:59. > :17:02.broke, it was very even in the first set, but he had the upper hand with

:17:03. > :17:06.the break. So it is just trying to find ways. The slow return the

:17:07. > :17:10.momentum the difficult bit is turning it and once I had it, it

:17:11. > :17:17.became a bit easier for me to read the game. Well done to Alex.

:17:18. > :17:25.Qualifying. He had a long injury layout. It is good to see nice guys

:17:26. > :17:29.like he is doing well. I'm happy for me that I win but unfortunately for

:17:30. > :17:33.him, he has to lose. What is the hardest part about playing somebody

:17:34. > :17:37.you know so well and who knows you so well like Alex was the mark I

:17:38. > :17:41.don't know. I used to train quite a bit with him at Roehampton but he

:17:42. > :17:47.has been recently in Barcelona training. I have not seen much of

:17:48. > :17:53.him. It is difficult. And we both, our game styles maybe would be more

:17:54. > :17:58.suited to clay. I have never seen him play on grass because I have

:17:59. > :18:01.always been on a hard court. It is difficult and he win three matches

:18:02. > :18:05.in qualifying so I knew he would feel good. How important was this

:18:06. > :18:09.victory for you in the context of the year you are having and how hard

:18:10. > :18:19.you are working? It is good, just nice to get the win at Wimbledon.

:18:20. > :18:25.The home Grand Slam. It is one of those dreams, the tournament is, and

:18:26. > :18:29.it has not been a good tournament for me in recent years. It is nice

:18:30. > :18:33.to get the win. I only live up the road now so it is really local for

:18:34. > :18:37.me, so it is nice to just get the win. Huge congratulations, well

:18:38. > :18:44.done, Kyle. Thanks a lot. Yes, he will sleep a

:18:45. > :18:49.lot better this evening, Kyle Edmund. It could release him and it

:18:50. > :18:53.could be the player we have seen do well at the US Open and the third

:18:54. > :19:00.round of the French Open with big wins against big names. Potentially

:19:01. > :19:04.a big name next, Gael Monfils, the 15th seed. But on his day, he will

:19:05. > :19:07.give anybody a run for their money. If he continues the form he showed

:19:08. > :19:11.after the first set, he was really impressive.

:19:12. > :19:17.All sides of his game working well, the server we expect, the forehand

:19:18. > :19:21.winner expect, but I thought it was the backhand that was amazing and

:19:22. > :19:25.the length of the ball in the last three sets. A lot of credit, this

:19:26. > :19:37.was a difficult match for him mentally. A lot of pressure on him

:19:38. > :19:46.and he came through well. The first time he has had to shake hands with

:19:47. > :19:53.a win at SW19. Well done, Kyle Edmund. He is true in four sets, in

:19:54. > :20:01.two hours and three minutes. -- he is through. SUE BARKER: that

:20:02. > :20:04.will be a huge relief to him and he could play Gael Monfils if he comes

:20:05. > :20:10.through his opener. That is core to number three. Plenty of tennis here

:20:11. > :20:14.today and on BBC Two, we will go to Court Number One to see last year's

:20:15. > :20:22.runner up Milos Raonic, big serve once again this year, he is facing

:20:23. > :20:25.Jan-Lennard Struff, of Germany. On serve in this opening set. So let's

:20:26. > :20:30.join Jamie Baker alongside Andrew Castle.

:20:31. > :20:38.Well, that is a nice time to come up with a massive serve down the

:20:39. > :20:49.middle. Six foot five and 135 malls per hour, he is no slouch. -- mph.

:20:50. > :20:57.There it was a game, a fourth ace for him. 40 minutes had been played

:20:58. > :21:03.here. There have been break points. Struff has saved all five that he

:21:04. > :21:10.has faced. And the one break point but he faced. I should say Raonic,

:21:11. > :21:18.as we looked at his serve, he opened the match with 141, 139, 135. A

:21:19. > :21:25.second serve ace at 119. Look at this delivery. It hardly comes as a

:21:26. > :21:30.surprise to anybody, of course, a semifinalist at Wimbledon three

:21:31. > :21:35.years ago, and last year a finalist at Queen's where he was a point or

:21:36. > :22:30.two away, losing to the same man both times, Andy Murray.

:22:31. > :22:45.Nicely done. Milos Raonic just hitting the ball into the Open

:22:46. > :22:48.space. Quick cold. Threshold. Jamie Baker, why when people are talking

:22:49. > :22:53.about who is possible Wimbledon champion this year it is the name of

:22:54. > :22:57.Milos Raonic not come up? I think there has probably been a couple of

:22:58. > :23:01.things this year, a couple of injuries this year, he has not been

:23:02. > :23:04.quite as consistent maybe in previous years. But we can see from

:23:05. > :23:09.his form he will always be a contender here. But I think the

:23:10. > :23:14.biggest factor in why there is not much chat is everybody is talking

:23:15. > :23:18.about the resurgence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and what will

:23:19. > :23:22.happen in terms of Murray and Jock itch, will they get back into 50?

:23:23. > :23:29.When you have analysed all that, you think about Milos Raonic -- Novak

:23:30. > :23:32.Djokovic. The biggest casualty in the men's draw is Stan Wawrinka. He

:23:33. > :23:38.did not look like he wanted to be out there against young Daniil

:23:39. > :23:45.Medvedev, serving towards the end and losing a bit of heart. But Milos

:23:46. > :23:48.Raonic at Queen's lost to eight -- Thanasi Kokkinakis on the same day.

:23:49. > :24:00.They took many casualties in that tournament. But here at Wimbledon,

:24:01. > :24:02.Jan-Lennard Struff certainly playing somebody you could win the

:24:03. > :24:30.tournament, 5-6. That was there, wasn't it? The first

:24:31. > :25:04.meeting between these two players. Struff is 27. He is ranked world

:25:05. > :25:13.number 53, as high as 49. Playing near a career high. He is confident.

:25:14. > :25:16.This is the marginally more difficult game for the right-hander

:25:17. > :25:26.to serve at this time of day, if you look at the shadows. Neatly done. We

:25:27. > :25:31.are going to go to tie-break to decide the first set. Struff will

:25:32. > :26:08.take that. Considering he has saved all the points.

:26:09. > :27:05.A good start for Raonic, the ever reliable big first serve.

:27:06. > :27:19.Excellent footwork. Keeping himself to the side of the ball on arrival.

:27:20. > :28:54.Easing into the court, the pressure reverts to Raonic.

:28:55. > :29:03.That is a way, there is a big let's go from Raonic as Struff misses Long

:29:04. > :29:10.on the backhand side. And he will feel the pressure from Raonic at the

:29:11. > :29:14.other end. He has win 30 consecutive points on his own serve. If you go

:29:15. > :29:22.down a mini-break against a player like Raonic or John Isner, you can

:29:23. > :29:25.go down pretty quick. That is his father in the light blue shirt, an

:29:26. > :29:53.engineer by trade, watching his boy, Raonic.

:29:54. > :30:00.That was a real chance to accelerate in that tie-break. The second serve

:30:01. > :30:01.was right into the forehand slot of Raonic, he will be disappointed in

:30:02. > :30:34.that. Raonic trying to snap a streak of

:30:35. > :30:36.tie-break losses. Against Roger Federer in the semifinal, and Andy

:30:37. > :31:01.Murray. Heavy return straight down the

:31:02. > :32:22.middle. Perfectly legitimate option. He was a moment of truth after 52

:32:23. > :33:33.minutes. That was a bit of a battle, wasn't

:33:34. > :33:50.it? From both players. Raonic wins the tie-break. A big showed from

:33:51. > :33:55.Raonic, he's taken the first set. Over on Centre Court the runner-up

:33:56. > :33:59.is opening proceedings, Angelique Kerber. She taken the first set. If

:34:00. > :34:03.you want to watch that match you can.

:34:04. > :34:16.Over on Court Number Two, one Martin Del Plata has taken this.

:34:17. > :34:33.It is good to see him back on the court.

:34:34. > :34:51.Also playing is Ferrer. He got a very nasty blister on his right

:34:52. > :34:53.heel. Such experience here. I have a feeling that one will go on for some

:34:54. > :35:02.time. That's happening on Court number 12.

:35:03. > :35:08.Lovely weather at Wimbledon. No sign of rain. Plenty happening on the

:35:09. > :35:14.second day of the Championships on Centre Court later, where we have

:35:15. > :35:17.got Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to look forward to. Let's rejoin

:35:18. > :36:20.Court Number One. How often do we see this at the

:36:21. > :36:35.start of a set? Straightaway. A chance for Raonic.

:36:36. > :36:47.Is that OK? Three break points, Raonic did particularly well on the

:36:48. > :36:55.break of serve. It caught the service line and slowed up. He

:36:56. > :37:25.hasn't broken yet, he's had five chances.

:37:26. > :37:32.He has a nine match losing streak at these major championships and has

:37:33. > :38:05.not picked up a win since the US Open in 2014.

:38:06. > :38:17.That's a mistake, and Raonic has the breakthrough. That is to go along

:38:18. > :38:28.with the tie-breaker. It's the harsh nature of the scoring

:38:29. > :38:33.system. Seven minutes ago he was getting ready to start a tie-break

:38:34. > :38:41.and before you know it, you are a set and a break down, compounded by

:38:42. > :38:43.the fact that he knows his opportunities to break Raonic are

:38:44. > :38:48.going to be very far and few between. Raonic's average speed is

:38:49. > :39:10.130 mph. Remember, he won 14 of the last 15

:39:11. > :39:12.points towards the end of that set on his own serve. So Struff is up

:39:13. > :40:44.against it. That one had a lot more in it. When

:40:45. > :40:47.he played the first forehand he must have been six feet out of the

:40:48. > :41:33.tramline. He played himself into trouble.

:41:34. > :41:43.Does not seem to be going very easily for him, this first service

:41:44. > :41:48.game. Fen-3-mac has been here before.

:41:49. > :42:06.That was unlucky, he read when it was going, but it caught the line.

:42:07. > :42:51.So often leads to a mis-hit. That's a very intelligent forehand,

:42:52. > :42:53.just use the angle. You could see the spin taking it away from his

:42:54. > :43:33.opponent with every single meter. Three times a Grand Slam doubles

:43:34. > :44:18.champion. Working with me -- working with Raonic.

:44:19. > :44:27.Break points saved, and the break of serve backed up as Raonic extends

:44:28. > :44:40.his lead. Quarterfinalist at the Australian

:44:41. > :44:49.Open this year. Lost to Rafael Nadal, who played a magnificent

:44:50. > :44:51.semifinal against Grigor Dimitrov. Pretty handy five set final against

:44:52. > :45:02.Roger Federer as well. Dangerous times for the German

:45:03. > :45:40.player now. This could get away quickly. Opening

:45:41. > :46:50.his shoulders of it. He is not short of power.

:46:51. > :47:00.Four straight points and two break of serve. He is cruising.

:47:01. > :47:11.Quite a lax game once again. He is ranked 53 in the world but he cannot

:47:12. > :47:23.get the job done. It is hard to understand why. Whether it is

:47:24. > :47:27.self-inflicted or whether it is the knowledge of what's coming down the

:47:28. > :47:38.other end, first-served percent below 50%. Always having to fight

:47:39. > :47:53.for every single point. Raonic born in Montenegrin but moved

:47:54. > :48:00.to Canada when he was young. His tennis is made in Canada, who has

:48:01. > :49:29.done pretty well with male tennis players at the moment.

:49:30. > :49:47.Another tidy game. We've mentioned that he's struggled in the majors.

:49:48. > :49:57.He is a quality player. It would be nice if he got a decent draw now and

:49:58. > :50:06.again. He last to Dominic Thiem in the Australian Open. And Tomas

:50:07. > :50:22.Berdych in the French. Those sort of drawers, you can do nothing about.

:50:23. > :50:27.It does show that there is a little bit of luck. To get that in

:50:28. > :51:25.consecutive slams is bad luck. Raonic in control of this first

:51:26. > :51:32.round attack. Roger Federer has stopped doing his sneak attack. I

:51:33. > :51:39.once asked him what it is like to have his experience. He said

:51:40. > :51:43.sometimes I wish I did not have it, sometimes I want to play like an

:51:44. > :51:48.18-year-old who does not know what he's doing but just plays for the

:51:49. > :51:59.joy to win. I am not going to lose too much sleep feeling sorry for

:52:00. > :52:15.him! You played on this court with him.

:52:16. > :52:18.This court is like an egg with its top taken off, a new roof is going

:52:19. > :52:34.on soon. Does it feel like a big court? It

:52:35. > :52:39.does. It used to have the roof and you could not actually see the last

:52:40. > :53:03.few seats so it felt bigger than it was.

:53:04. > :53:08.It was a massive industrial site all winter and they just packed away.

:53:09. > :54:25.They've somehow made it presentable to this tournament.

:54:26. > :54:31.Second serve of 130 mph. It's an amazing service motion. Look at the

:54:32. > :55:03.wrist angle to start with. It's an amazing momentum from that

:55:04. > :55:05.first set tie-breaker. Struff made a couple of mistakes but it has been

:55:06. > :55:13.one-way traffic. Raonic has got himself a nice, newly

:55:14. > :56:53.strong racket. Two breaks of serve out the

:56:54. > :56:58.difference in this second set. He will serve for a two set lead.

:56:59. > :57:07.We will be back to see that but we can tell you what else is happening.

:57:08. > :57:10.Angelique Kerber was a break of serve up but dropped her serve. That

:57:11. > :57:22.match is now live on BBC One. On Court Two, where are they? On the

:57:23. > :57:28.red button. They are somewhere. It is Del Potro who is 2-1 up. It is

:57:29. > :57:49.3-3 for the former semifinalist. One result to bring you and what a

:57:50. > :57:56.match this was. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has lost. She

:57:57. > :58:03.certainly had her chances. She could not take them. Finally secured

:58:04. > :00:12.victory on her second match point. Quite a dramatic match.

:00:13. > :00:26.138 mph, into double figures and aces, Milos Raonic. Last year's

:00:27. > :00:35.runner up with a set point. That is nicely done, two breaks of serve.

:00:36. > :00:48.His coach looks British happy with his progress so far. 2:30 p:m., now.

:00:49. > :00:53.So a number of different slightly odd habits. He used to play with a

:00:54. > :00:57.sleeve on his right arm and it became something of a trademark. You

:00:58. > :01:03.might remember that. The company that sponsors him for clothing, he

:01:04. > :01:08.they had a tag line, believe in the sleeve. And he has a gumshield when

:01:09. > :01:15.he is beating between games, he takes that alt. -- and when he is

:01:16. > :01:22.having food between games. The start of the second set was so crucial and

:01:23. > :01:27.so difficult for Struff. You would expect Raonic to be on top in most

:01:28. > :01:32.categories, which he is. But the key was always going to be the first

:01:33. > :01:37.five, ten minutes of the second set, after a close first set. How many

:01:38. > :01:42.times we see it with the top players against the challenge, if you like.

:01:43. > :01:45.A slight drop-off from the lose of the set and the top player

:01:46. > :01:53.accelerates and before you know it, there is a big gap. Struff has a job

:01:54. > :01:59.on his hands to combat from two sets down. No doubt about it. You can

:02:00. > :02:04.only take one point and one game at a time. You can see the confidence,

:02:05. > :02:12.carving across the ball on the backhand side, the swing has become

:02:13. > :02:15.that much easier. Much more carefree from Milos Raonic. Struff to serve

:02:16. > :02:34.at the beginning of the first set. -- third set.

:02:35. > :02:43.He lost to Britain's Dan Evans, Struff, last year in the first

:02:44. > :02:50.round. Such a shame that Dan Evans has really been the dark -- the

:02:51. > :02:55.architect of his own downfall. Testing positive for cocaine and he

:02:56. > :03:51.will face a lengthy ban now. The same pattern in set number two.

:03:52. > :03:58.Raonic is well over his opponent. It is hard -- that turn down the middle

:03:59. > :05:22.setting him up for how he wants to dictate the rest of the point.

:05:23. > :05:32.Well, no doubt delighted with this. He faced Federer here at Wimbledon

:05:33. > :05:40.lashes. 2-1 down in the semifinal. Acquitted himself pretty well. He

:05:41. > :05:43.beats David Goffin in a round of 16 from two sets down. These matches

:05:44. > :05:50.fade into the abyss and you forget them with each passing shot week and

:05:51. > :05:54.month. But Raonic has to be considered a major threat for the

:05:55. > :06:21.Championships this year. 2-0 and a break.

:06:22. > :06:30.Of course, all those matches for the top players, they really contribute

:06:31. > :06:32.to who they are today. And whenever they get into difficult situations,

:06:33. > :06:39.they do remember those situations, I have done that before and I can do

:06:40. > :06:40.it again. And their opponents are quite aware of that situation as

:06:41. > :08:45.well. He is just caught reaching a game

:08:46. > :08:49.for the forehand side. It can get swirly in here and the wind was

:08:50. > :08:59.pulling the ball back towards the net.

:09:00. > :09:15.That is an amazing service action, isn't it? Massive wrist movement and

:09:16. > :10:08.the snap of the racket head through the ball. Two sets and 2-0.

:10:09. > :10:20.It does look a bit swirly, was it when you played? Yes, it does tend

:10:21. > :11:06.to change very quickly, you keep your feet movement going.

:11:07. > :11:26.Serving in the slot again and that was beautiful timing from Raonic. It

:11:27. > :11:50.hit the sweet spot of the racket. A great deal of subtlety on this

:11:51. > :11:53.court. Both these men six tall. Relying heavily on power on the

:11:54. > :12:04.surface. UMPIRE: Let, the surface. -- first

:12:05. > :13:37.service. Advantage, Struff. A break point against Struff, but he

:13:38. > :13:46.holds serve and at least he is in this set, although a break down at

:13:47. > :13:54.2-1. The best German at the moment is Sascha Zverev, who is one of

:13:55. > :14:01.these next-generation players. And they will have their own tournament

:14:02. > :14:08.in Milan. So it is 21 years of age and under. Later this year, before

:14:09. > :14:15.the O2. Yes, the top eight players in that age group. It is a fantastic

:14:16. > :14:21.thing, and somebody we know well, Ross, working in the ATP, has been

:14:22. > :14:28.massively behind that project. Is it going to be best-of-7 or best-of-5

:14:29. > :14:35.sets? There is a shorter school system, the best of five, the first

:14:36. > :14:38.four. That is a great idea. And shorter warm-ups, so a shot clock

:14:39. > :14:44.counting down from the moment the players walk on the court. That is

:14:45. > :14:48.going to be five minutes. And the other thing they are going to do is

:14:49. > :14:57.no net chords. That is going to be funny. Somebody is going to let it

:14:58. > :15:03.roll through and say, that was let. It takes a little getting used to,

:15:04. > :15:55.that rule. But will Zverev qualify for both? That is the question.

:15:56. > :16:33.Racking them up, it Jamie. A Baker's doesn't. -- dozen.

:16:34. > :16:48.They will need to rename that in tennis matches, I don't think I ever

:16:49. > :16:53.got to 13 aces in a tournament. Come on, use serve the big! -- you served

:16:54. > :17:17.a! UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:17:18. > :17:25.Let's be very honest about the record. You are a Wimbledon Singles

:17:26. > :17:31.champion. I will take that! This is the club championship every year for

:17:32. > :17:36.full members and temporary members. And you won it. I was able to squeak

:17:37. > :17:42.through in the final this year. Against? A tough battle against a

:17:43. > :17:47.good buddy, John Doran. Charles was in the draw playing Rafael Nadal. He

:17:48. > :18:08.has won it about 14 times. Outside of the Championships, this

:18:09. > :18:38.is a private tennis club with naturally a strong membership.

:18:39. > :18:53.It is about time he had an easy service game, a hold to love. 3-2,

:18:54. > :18:59.Milos Raonic. So what did you win for your club come huge victory? I

:19:00. > :19:06.won a lovely Trophy which is now back in a very secure Cabinet of the

:19:07. > :19:10.club somewhere. And a nice voucher for the amazing dining room

:19:11. > :19:18.restaurant which we enjoyed from time to time. Which is far more than

:19:19. > :19:24.I deserve. That's true! It is a fantastic private club. And always,

:19:25. > :19:30.looking to the future, to keep it at the very forefront of what sport can

:19:31. > :19:36.do. And they have connections with a number of other great clubs

:19:37. > :19:41.including Augusta, where the Masters golf takes place. And there is Lee

:19:42. > :19:45.Charles on the left looking at his phone. Honestly, we did not know

:19:46. > :19:50.that would happen. He is the coach at Queen's club and he is from

:19:51. > :19:55.Somerset. He is very strong and he has won this club championship a lot

:19:56. > :20:15.and he is part of the player liaison team here. At the Championships.

:20:16. > :20:23.I don't think there is anyone in this tournament that has a bigger

:20:24. > :20:30.forehand than Lee Charles. Nobody here has a bigger serve than this.

:20:31. > :20:37.It is the noise of the thing! That was only 128 mph. He started the

:20:38. > :20:53.match with 141 mph. We're not going to say it is

:20:54. > :21:04.interesting all the time, but it is certainly effective.

:21:05. > :21:21.Here we go. One minute, job done. Struff, not a great deal of rallies

:21:22. > :21:24.for people to enjoy on Court Number One as they continue to throw the

:21:25. > :22:49.heavy artillery at each other. Perfect grass court tactic. Back

:22:50. > :23:03.behind, always difficult to change direction.

:23:04. > :23:10.The pattern of quick service games continues in this first-round match.

:23:11. > :23:18.First set tie-break was absolutely crucial. Raonic won it. And rather

:23:19. > :23:26.run away with set two and three. So far. So far, he is running away from

:23:27. > :23:32.Struff. But with these quick service games, you can easily have a couple

:23:33. > :23:36.of quick returns out of the middle of the racket and in a flash, you

:23:37. > :23:42.can be back on serve again. So nobody can take for granted victory

:23:43. > :23:48.from two sets and one break. That is what was surprising the first set,

:23:49. > :23:51.set and a half, Raonic was in Struff's service game every time.

:23:52. > :23:55.Often his pattern of returning is he goes called for a couple of games

:23:56. > :23:59.and suddenly he strings a number of points together and that makes him

:24:00. > :24:03.even more difficult to play against because at that point, you have no

:24:04. > :24:10.rhythm. Then he gets the break and, OK, I would just space on other 140

:24:11. > :24:22.mph serve! -- I will just face another.

:24:23. > :24:38.The number three seed playing on this court next. Dominic Thiem

:24:39. > :24:41.against 90 Jan Micro is next. -- Vasek Pospisil is next. This is the

:24:42. > :25:21.first in the sunshine. UMPIRE: Mr Raonic has two challenges

:25:22. > :26:15.remaining. And just as we said, when it is only

:26:16. > :26:16.one break, of course, a loose shot on the first point, a good point

:26:17. > :26:53.from Struff and it is 0-30. He doesn't really have a blocked

:26:54. > :26:58.return, does he? Like Federer, utilising more of a volley to meet.

:26:59. > :27:05.The shortened backswing. A couple of times, in this match, you thought

:27:06. > :27:15.that might have helped him. The first to take a swing is Struff.

:27:16. > :27:33.Plenty of top-spin on that, bringing the ball down. This could be the

:27:34. > :28:03.last mini battle for Raonic, as he closes in on victory.

:28:04. > :28:12.UMPIRE: Out! The crowd very keen to see an

:28:13. > :28:47.exchange or two. It was quickly corrected on the

:28:48. > :28:50.sideline. And that is good line judging, there was no chance he was

:28:51. > :28:54.getting his racket on that. So impressive when you have not been

:28:55. > :28:57.under that much pressure, that serve is unplayable. Totally, it had some

:28:58. > :29:32.kick on it, at 134. Despite all the aces, he really

:29:33. > :29:37.doesn't serve many double faults, that is only his third. 49 had been

:29:38. > :30:38.played. Another break point. Look how far outside the tramline

:30:39. > :30:55.Sears. Gets nicely balanced. Great timing. That's why people don't

:30:56. > :31:08.volley fights at this time. Three break points in the game. I'm

:31:09. > :31:41.returnable on the left side. -- it was not returnable.

:31:42. > :31:46.The approach shot straight down the middle, he had no angle to work with

:31:47. > :32:18.but moving his feet created an angle.

:32:19. > :33:32.Some aces, some doubles. Some great passing shots.

:33:33. > :33:43.Mr Raonic is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:33:44. > :33:57.The line judge called this out, just caught the edge of the line. The bad

:33:58. > :34:31.news is Raonic gets a first serve. Big serve and forehand going back.

:34:32. > :37:08.He's one game from a place in the second round.

:37:09. > :37:15.It is very hard to know what to do with Raonic serving, you can try and

:37:16. > :37:19.change your position, move up the court, start doing handstands and

:37:20. > :37:28.press ups. His red is not easily broken. It's a very fair point. Last

:37:29. > :37:35.opportunity to make some type of impression. Do something completely

:37:36. > :37:43.off the wall. It's about anything to try and help Raonic miss his first

:37:44. > :37:49.serve and then can you get a racquet on the second serve? Fen-3-mac has

:37:50. > :37:55.five break points in this match but the first set tie-break was crucial.

:37:56. > :39:24.Raonic has never lost at the first round.

:39:25. > :39:33.He's got 0-30 again, well played. That's about the best return from

:39:34. > :39:37.Struff in the match. He did so well to get the return back. Clever

:39:38. > :39:42.approach, did not try to do too much, just ask the question of

:39:43. > :40:11.Raonic on the backhand pass. Second game in a row 40-30.

:40:12. > :40:45.Will that be the difference? He wouldn't mind that one back.

:40:46. > :40:55.Very calmly done from Raonic, no need to put any more pace on that.

:40:56. > :41:55.All about taking it off. He did the hard work the serve.

:41:56. > :42:07.And that's away. It has taken in just over two hours, but Struff has

:42:08. > :42:08.broken through, he's broken serve, when Raonic was serving for the

:42:09. > :42:19.match. Would you believe that? This would be the best comeback at

:42:20. > :42:26.Wimbledon of all time. But fair play. You would presume the wind had

:42:27. > :43:57.been taken out of his sails but he kept in there.

:43:58. > :44:59.Looks a different player than a few minutes ago. Body serve.

:45:00. > :45:21.Raonic seemed to be on the verge of the second round but maybe not. He's

:45:22. > :45:32.come back from 2-0 once in his career. That was the US Open. He

:45:33. > :45:50.defeated his opponent and it was the last time he won a match at a Grand

:45:51. > :45:57.Slam. Maybe today is the day? The pressure of the match has shown at

:45:58. > :46:01.the start of the second and third set however he did regroup over the

:46:02. > :46:10.course of ten, 15 minutes and having had that opportunity and not getting

:46:11. > :46:12.it, he regrouped really well. In my view he deserves a break of serve

:46:13. > :46:26.for his efforts in this match. Just a few minutes ago, Milos Raonic

:46:27. > :46:28.of Canada was serving for the match, but lost his serve for the first

:46:29. > :48:03.time. He does have a two set lead. Is he feeling good, or is he feeling

:48:04. > :48:07.good? Yes. Breaking the Raonic serve on grass is a badge of honour and a

:48:08. > :48:31.feather in the. His coach never sure was very much

:48:32. > :48:52.but he will be having kittens on the inside.

:48:53. > :48:59.Just anticipating the ball down the middle on the first serve. Stealing

:49:00. > :49:44.slightly to the middle and could not recover.

:49:45. > :50:03.Both players receive one additional challenge.

:50:04. > :50:14.Milos Raonic is challenging the ball. Ball was called in.

:50:15. > :50:44.Eight aces so far and this is the ninth.

:50:45. > :51:30.He did really well with this one. A few games ago, shot of the match

:51:31. > :51:50.with a backhand pass up the lane. Still recovered in time.

:51:51. > :52:32.Just as in the first set tie-break, he takes the mini-break first.

:52:33. > :52:38.There's been a couple of times when you can see the right tactic. You

:52:39. > :52:50.don't feel like that one needs to be near the line. So much power on it.

:52:51. > :52:56.He lost in the first round of Queen's Club. It is quite some time

:52:57. > :52:59.to wait. There is no substitute for being in a match situation even when

:53:00. > :53:31.you are as experienced. Pretty close to the line. That is

:53:32. > :53:41.his game plan and he's sticking with it. His record was broken at about

:53:42. > :53:44.this point in the first set tie-break, and tension can creep

:53:45. > :53:57.into the game of anybody. You can see the roof behind him. No

:53:58. > :54:00.need for it today. Not as bright as it was earlier but no suggestion of

:54:01. > :54:25.any rain. This is a big point. He put himself in a difficult

:54:26. > :54:39.position. It is becoming a little bit predictable. Doing well to knock

:54:40. > :54:55.the ball back into play for 132 mph serve.

:54:56. > :55:00.Positive tennis but I wondered whether he had a play on that

:55:01. > :55:25.volley. You mentioned the word tension

:55:26. > :55:29.minutes ago. Here's the effect of it. Not doing enough with the

:55:30. > :55:32.volley. Still a good passing shot. He will be kicking himself. He knew

:55:33. > :56:09.it straightaway. Very nicely played. This has been

:56:10. > :56:56.quite tense. Just landed wide. Off and running.

:56:57. > :57:05.It has been challenged and I think we will see confirmation. Game, set

:57:06. > :57:07.and match, Raonic. It was by no means easy and he will be relieved

:57:08. > :57:29.to get into the second round. Warm applause, which will delight

:57:30. > :57:37.Milos Raonic, the man who defeated Roger Federer in the semifinal last

:57:38. > :57:41.year. He was a semifinalist as long ago Glasgow 2014, that as long ago

:57:42. > :57:50.as 2014. There's nothing to suggest he cannot

:57:51. > :57:56.put another run together. Absolutely, he's got the weapons, he

:57:57. > :58:00.is tailor-made for grass courts. I was very impressed with the way that

:58:01. > :58:08.he came out, he was very intent, ready to play at the start. I don't

:58:09. > :58:12.think this will do him any harm and you would only expect him to get

:58:13. > :58:26.better with each match. He has always struggled with

:58:27. > :58:37.problems. He was moving well. This unfortunate loss rate continues in

:58:38. > :58:47.the major tournaments. He's made his contribution in the singles.

:58:48. > :58:58.Milos Raonic advances. He got to the fourth round at the French Open. He

:58:59. > :59:06.has got used to being into the latter stages.

:59:07. > :59:17.We could see a lot of him during the Championships.

:59:18. > :59:30.He was the first Canadian man to reach a grand final, a piece of

:59:31. > :59:32.sporting history for him. Vastly experienced. He's going to play

:59:33. > :59:53.another man of vast Congratulations, a big battle but

:59:54. > :59:58.you must be pleased that you eased your way through that match in

:59:59. > :00:02.straight sets. Yes, it's a very important victory for me. I created

:00:03. > :00:07.a lot of opportunities for myself, did not make the most of them. It

:00:08. > :00:11.was important that regardless of the process I got it done today. In

:00:12. > :00:15.terms of where you think your game is, you've been practising on grass,

:00:16. > :00:23.playing a lot on grass, where do you think you are in comparison to this

:00:24. > :00:30.time last year? I think I'm a better player. Now it's about finding the

:00:31. > :00:35.rhythm. It is matches like today that are very important for me to

:00:36. > :00:42.get through. Next that you got Mikhail Youzhny. You have beaten him

:00:43. > :00:45.a couple of times. How difficult prospect is he? He knows how to

:00:46. > :00:49.play. He knows how to go out there and get the job done. It is

:00:50. > :00:52.important that I am very disciplined and I bring my best tennis and

:00:53. > :00:58.hopefully I can play as much on my terms as possible.

:00:59. > :01:08.SUE BARKER: HE WILL CERTAINLY BE HAPPY TO get under that his belt

:01:09. > :01:11.having gone out in the opening round at Queen's Club.

:01:12. > :01:15.He said he never felt better coming into Grand Slam and will build on

:01:16. > :01:20.the experience he got from getting through to the final and losing to

:01:21. > :01:23.Andy Murray last year and with a serve like that, you can never write

:01:24. > :01:26.him off. Raonic through in straight sets. Some lovely scenes. The

:01:27. > :01:27.weather is beautiful. Playp under way on all courts. Many results to

:01:28. > :01:38.bring you up-to-date with as well: David Ferrer is through, this match

:01:39. > :01:44.against Richard Gasquet, two of the games' greats out there. Gasquet

:01:45. > :01:47.twice has been a semifinalist, Ferrer twice a quarter-finalist but

:01:48. > :01:52.Ferrer, who is not seeded at the Championships for the first time. In

:01:53. > :01:58.fact in a Grand Slam, not seeded for the first time since 2005 and he was

:01:59. > :02:02.ranked as high as 2003. These were the rallies they were producing on

:02:03. > :02:03.court 12. A tough first round between those two but Gasquet, the

:02:04. > :02:18.22nd seed is out, Ferrer is through. And Juan Martin Del Potro, the US

:02:19. > :02:20.Open champion a few years ago, a semifinalist here, he came through

:02:21. > :02:24.against Thanasi Kokkinakis in four sets. Still lovely to see Kokkinakis

:02:25. > :02:30.back on tour. He's had so many injuries on and off since 2015.

:02:31. > :02:36.But's back on court but it is Juan Martin Del Potro who goes through to

:02:37. > :02:58.the next round. Muguruza is through. She was a

:02:59. > :03:07.finalist in in 2015 and won in 2016 and is safely through to the next

:03:08. > :03:13.round. Earlier in the day we saw Kyle Edmund going through, defeating

:03:14. > :03:19.Alex Ward. We know he'll face Gael Monfils. He has come through against

:03:20. > :03:23.Daniel brand of Germany. So in round 2, things Monfils against Kyle

:03:24. > :03:28.Edmund. So that's what has been happening

:03:29. > :03:38.and this is what is happening at the moment: this is Centre Court.

:03:39. > :03:51.That match is live on BBC One if you want to watch. Over on Court Two.

:03:52. > :03:56.Former finalist there, Agnieszka Radwanska earliy stages of her match

:03:57. > :04:06.with Jelenka Jankovic ta. Is our feature match on the red button. And

:04:07. > :04:10.Katie Boulter has taken the first set. A story this is, the

:04:11. > :04:16.20-year-old from Great Britain, a wildcard. A great junior career and

:04:17. > :04:20.she has taken the first set against a very experienced player Christina

:04:21. > :04:25.McHale. Five British players have already made it through the first

:04:26. > :04:29.round. If Katie can make it, it'll be the first time since 2006 that

:04:30. > :04:36.six British players have made it through to the second round. We will

:04:37. > :04:42.keep an eye on her. You can watch on the BBC Sport website. Over the past

:04:43. > :04:47.few months I have been travelling around the world reminiscing with so

:04:48. > :04:51.many of the great champions, some of my friends for a Wimbledon document

:04:52. > :04:54.that went out on Sunday. A travelled to Stuttgart to interview the seven

:04:55. > :04:55.time champion here, Roger Federer. Here are some of the Roger's

:04:56. > :05:20.memories from playing at SW 19. Great moment walking through the

:05:21. > :05:26.gates and asking where is the locker room and where can we warm-up, what

:05:27. > :05:32.are we allowed to do, when do we play, what are the routines?

:05:33. > :05:38.Everything was so new. It is like living in a dream world back in the

:05:39. > :05:43.day, I remember it, very, very vividly. Memories of the unioniour

:05:44. > :05:50.Championship, which he won. Now he needed a breakthrough moment as a

:05:51. > :05:55.grown-up. The 2001 fourth round against Sampras was a surreal

:05:56. > :06:03.experience. . A few times I was like - is it a dream or reality. Then I

:06:04. > :06:07.was like - it must be real, it is an unbelievable feeling I have right

:06:08. > :06:12.now. I remember warming up, the five minutes with Pete hitting balls, I

:06:13. > :06:20.was so nervous. I would hit the ball, I would follow and Pete would

:06:21. > :06:24.hit back to me and I was like - this is so cool, it is Pete Sampras on

:06:25. > :06:33.is so cool, it is Pete Sampras victory in five sets. He was on his

:06:34. > :06:39.way. The first to topple Sampras in five years. The service was pretty

:06:40. > :06:45.big. He returns well. He moves well. He has all the shots. At this point

:06:46. > :06:53.I said - this kid is going to be good. Little did I know I would win

:06:54. > :07:03.18 Majors and do everything in the sport. I could see he was going to

:07:04. > :07:16.Your first Grand Slam. Is that still the one that's so special? ? Ye, it

:07:17. > :07:21.was so emotional so, real. I can tell how raw it is. It just

:07:22. > :07:24.happened. So many eye motions. I was young and it was unexpected at

:07:25. > :07:27.everything. It was absolutely the most magical moment in my life. My

:07:28. > :07:32.career could have' stopped right then and I would've been a complete

:07:33. > :07:40.human being of a tennis player, really. Roger Federer, Wimbledon

:07:41. > :07:45.champion, you better get used to that. Thank you. It is an absolute

:07:46. > :07:51.dream for me coming through. I was always joking around when I was a

:07:52. > :07:59.boy - I'm going to win this. And now I have. I have so much support from

:08:00. > :08:04.back home and everyone here. What is your message to them? Oh, yes, a lot

:08:05. > :08:09.of people came from Basle, home, and it is so nice to share this moment

:08:10. > :08:17.and thanks to everybody, it's great. Congratulations. Roger Federer. It

:08:18. > :08:24.became an annual convenient. Roger won the next four finals. He was the

:08:25. > :08:41.best of a golden generation. Tennis as it had never been played before.

:08:42. > :08:52.Rafael Nadal finally ended Roger's run in 2008 in the final. When you

:08:53. > :08:57.are winning, it is easy for people to love you, you are supposed to be

:08:58. > :09:02.the best. Everything is great. Everything you touch turns to gold.

:09:03. > :09:05.But when you lose and you get the support, I think that means so much

:09:06. > :09:20.to you. He was still winning again, to the

:09:21. > :09:24.extent if he won in 2009 he would pass beyond Bjorn Borg's five titles

:09:25. > :09:29.and Roddick was his opponent on court and not the only person in

:09:30. > :09:35.Roger's thoughts. The record was on the line of getting through. My wife

:09:36. > :09:42.was pregnant with twins, nobody knew that other than the family and my

:09:43. > :09:45.friends and it was like this sort of perfect summer, really for me.

:09:46. > :10:08.COMMENTATOR: Under the gaze of a former champion.

:10:09. > :10:15.Bjorn Borg was there, John McEnroe was there. Pete was there

:10:16. > :10:20.Absolutely, exactly. Pete came. Four and a quarter hours. 37 service

:10:21. > :10:25.games without being broken. Until that last game. I know, I couldn't

:10:26. > :10:32.break Andy. He was playing that well. The only break I got, got me

:10:33. > :10:37.the win. It was totally crazy but it shows that you just have to

:10:38. > :10:41.sometimes mentally push and stay around and physically believe you

:10:42. > :10:49.can manage. And it paid off. It was amazing. I fell in love with the

:10:50. > :10:53.club but not only just the atmosphere of the tennis tournament

:10:54. > :10:58.and its history but also the people at the club. Everyone was so super

:10:59. > :11:09.friendly. I can't wait for the day to come that I will go there and

:11:10. > :11:13.wave for the Championship. Now he is having his sights on an eighth

:11:14. > :11:16.Wimbledon title. That would be special, playing his best tennis at

:11:17. > :11:20.the age of 35, Roger Federer. He will be on court later today. We're

:11:21. > :11:28.heading to Court Number One to see who many people would be the women's

:11:29. > :11:39.champion, Karolina Pliskova. She has served over 200 aces. Well she is

:11:40. > :12:00.Court One. Over to our commentators. COMMENTATOR: Well the players have

:12:01. > :12:03.almost completely their warm-up. Slightly depleated spectator numbers

:12:04. > :12:11.after the previous match but they will return. Here is the

:12:12. > :12:15.head-to-headp between the two players: they've played one over

:12:16. > :12:27.time. Pliskova came through that. You can

:12:28. > :12:33.see Court One looking a little thread bear around the edges,

:12:34. > :12:40.really, reminiscent of how Centre Court looked in the late 2,000s and

:12:41. > :12:44.20007 and 2008 before the roof was attached and the court returned to

:12:45. > :12:49.its glory. You can see that it bears the scars of battle. They only have

:12:50. > :12:53.a nine-month window for the building because the cranes have to be

:12:54. > :12:57.removed but when they are in full flow there are eight giant cranes

:12:58. > :13:11.around the court getting the work done as quickly as possible but it

:13:12. > :13:21.won't be ready until 2018. Not as pretty as it normally is but it'll

:13:22. > :13:28.be worth the wait we're told. Our chair um spire from the people's

:13:29. > :13:37.republic of China is Juan Zhang, who likes to be known as Jennifer Zhang.

:13:38. > :13:46.A few empty seats at the moment as people head out for some late lunch

:13:47. > :13:48.or an early tea and some strawberries, something a little

:13:49. > :13:53.more refreshing but they will return. Pliskova has made a bit of a

:13:54. > :13:59.name for herself in the women's game in the last couple of years and they

:14:00. > :14:02.will want to see her in action, particularly the big serve which has

:14:03. > :14:06.brought her countless aces this season.

:14:07. > :14:12.Pliskova will serve. Here we go, fighting for a place in the second

:14:13. > :14:39.round of the Championships. Pliskova has been the ace leader in

:14:40. > :14:48.the last couple of years and ace leader as well this year. She has a

:14:49. > :15:18.great service motion and repeatable. So helpful under pressure.

:15:19. > :15:27.Nicely done. She glides elegantly around the court, Karolina Pliskova.

:15:28. > :15:33.This is where she improved, looking to move forward in the last couple

:15:34. > :16:00.of years but also her movement. She has gotten stronger.

:16:01. > :16:13.Nicely done for Rodina. She has to keep the ball out of the middle of

:16:14. > :16:30.the court, where Pliskova where Pliskova can get on balance.

:16:31. > :16:49.She's so lethal with the powerful, flat ground strokes.

:16:50. > :16:58.Just a little sloppy from Pliskova. A couple of unforced errors. Always

:16:59. > :17:01.extra nerves the first few games of a first round any tournament. And

:17:02. > :17:35.you can double that in a Grand Slam. Well, this is a surprising start.

:17:36. > :17:39.The coach there to Karolina Pliskova watching on. Break point for

:17:40. > :18:02.Evgeniya Rodina in the opening game. Rinse and repeat for Pliskova. The

:18:03. > :18:31.big serve, short reply on the return and then takes control of the point.

:18:32. > :18:46.Late call. We might get a challenge here from Rodina. She decided

:18:47. > :18:47.against it. Awfully early to challenge, unless you feel pretty

:18:48. > :19:10.sure. Pliskova comes through her first

:19:11. > :19:14.service game but it wasn't as straightforward as she might have

:19:15. > :19:24.imagined. A little bit of resistance from Rodina who is a decent baseline

:19:25. > :19:27.counter-puncher. Rodina with a www. Not a lot of power on the serve or

:19:28. > :19:39.at the baseline, will be consistent. Rodina can be dangerous if she gets

:19:40. > :19:45.to net. She's been a decent doubles player over the years. Quite useful

:19:46. > :19:48.with the volley. We'll see if she gets too many opportunities at the

:19:49. > :20:04.front of court. Pliskova looking up, maybe thinking

:20:05. > :20:09.that last ball from Rodina might have been long. That first serve, 86

:20:10. > :20:11.miles per hour. A clear disparity between the two in the power

:20:12. > :20:48.department. That will be taken care of. Not too

:20:49. > :20:51.much damage at that pace. The return sent straight back to the Russian's

:20:52. > :21:15.feet. Yeah, that second serve was just

:21:16. > :21:19.looped in. Rather lamely. First serves are going to be imperative

:21:20. > :21:59.for Rodina. Her second be serve is so attackable.

:22:00. > :22:08.That was a tremendous frurn Pliskova. Such a clean ball striker.

:22:09. > :22:33.You get the feeling she hasn't quite found that rhythm yet.

:22:34. > :22:42.That is beautiful. Again, adding that element to her game, she has

:22:43. > :22:47.such heavy ground strokes, gets her opponent in a defensive position and

:22:48. > :22:55.then sneaks forward. A nice feel on this volley.

:22:56. > :23:35.Pliskova, on the move. Great accuracy.

:23:36. > :23:41.Evgeniya Rodina is not convinced about that, she thought she might

:23:42. > :23:44.have made that first serve but carries on without losing the

:23:45. > :23:53.challenge. Oh, that was close, that might be worth a look. UMPIRE: Mrs

:23:54. > :24:06.Pliskova challenges the call. COMMENTATOR: It was called out by

:24:07. > :24:08.the line judge. But Hawkeye will give us the decisive answer. It z it

:24:09. > :24:36.got the back edge. Nothing Rodina can do about that.

:24:37. > :24:39.Starting to loosen up. Just hitting with freedom, a loose arm. Break

:24:40. > :25:12.point again. Longest rally of the match, 13

:25:13. > :25:15.strokes. Pliskova with a little peek over at the base linesman. She

:25:16. > :25:24.thought another ball was long, mid-rally. It is important for

:25:25. > :25:27.Rodina to hold. You can feel Pliskova is starting to get a it

:25:28. > :25:50.good rhythm. -- get a good Third break point for our number 3

:25:51. > :25:53.seed. Champion in Eastbourne on Saturday on the grass with victory

:25:54. > :26:21.over Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

:26:22. > :26:38.That's a good exchange. 19 strokes. Lots of power. Better from Rodina,

:26:39. > :26:44.to absorb the pace. Technically, these ground strokes...

:26:45. > :27:17.Rodina is just about holding in to this service game.

:27:18. > :27:22.Well, long first games. 12 minutes on the clock already and not quite

:27:23. > :27:41.through the second game. And Rodina got there in the end. A

:27:42. > :27:47.tenacious hold from the Russian. So, that second game lasted getting on

:27:48. > :27:51.for eight minutes, during which Rodina had to defend three break

:27:52. > :27:56.points but came through unscathed eventually. Pliskova with a lot of

:27:57. > :27:57.mistakes on the return of serve. I wonder whether that will continue or

:27:58. > :28:51.if she'll find her rhythm? That's the toughest serve for a

:28:52. > :29:04.righty to get that in the angle. And Pliskova's favourite serve.

:29:05. > :29:33.Tough to read the Pliskova serve. She can hit the spots nicely.

:29:34. > :29:37.Second double fault for Karolina Pliskova and needs to tread

:29:38. > :29:51.carefully here at 30-30. hopefully I can play as much on my

:29:52. > :30:06.terms as possible. That's what makes her serve so tough

:30:07. > :30:12.to defend. Slow ball out wide, she took the pace off it. 98 mph. Ten

:30:13. > :30:40.mph slower than the quickest delivery she's grown so far.

:30:41. > :30:46.The first set remains on serve, currently.

:30:47. > :30:56.That's the scene over London looking down toward the financial centre.

:30:57. > :31:02.Across the city to the south-west, the leak and Wimbledon Park. The

:31:03. > :31:07.Centre Court roof remains open. It has not closed yet and you can see

:31:08. > :31:17.the work suspended on Court Number One. They've got two nine-month

:31:18. > :31:20.windows with which to finish that roof and add a second covered court

:31:21. > :31:33.to the already brilliant facilities here.

:31:34. > :31:50.The players are grateful for a bit of shade.

:31:51. > :32:02.There's a huge influx of spectators at the change of end after the

:32:03. > :32:08.Raonic victory. Tennis fans want a quick lunch, a sandwich and a drink,

:32:09. > :32:12.then back to watch. Tickets are like gold dust and you don't want to

:32:13. > :32:52.waste your afternoon. When she hit like that it is so

:32:53. > :33:15.beautiful to watch. Very good play, that second ball

:33:16. > :33:17.wrong foods your opponent. Rodina moves inside nice and early, well

:33:18. > :33:54.out in front. I love the way Pliskova moves up to

:33:55. > :34:16.the shorter of very quickly. -- shorter ball. Terrific food work.

:34:17. > :34:21.Rodina is refusing to be bullied out of these points. She's holding her

:34:22. > :34:52.own right now. Just a quick take back straight

:34:53. > :35:43.through the ball. Did not even move her feet.

:35:44. > :35:48.Yes. This time, Pliskova makes no mistake and secures the break of

:35:49. > :36:10.serve. She has a little bit of momentum

:36:11. > :36:12.behind her after a shaky start. It is forgiveable. Difficult opponent.

:36:13. > :36:25.Seems to have calmed down. Now with the break under her belt

:36:26. > :36:40.she can loosen up. That was good. It was lucky but find

:36:41. > :37:11.the line. Fourth ace from the Czech player.

:37:12. > :38:29.Quickest serve of the match. After some nervy games she has

:38:30. > :38:31.settled down. Relaxing into her strategy and is in a pretty

:38:32. > :38:39.commanding position in the opening set. It is amazing how a match can

:38:40. > :38:50.turn around so quickly. She is starting to boss the points. Has

:38:51. > :39:02.stretched the lead. You wonder if the belief has started to dissipate.

:39:03. > :39:15.She is my favourite as of now. Tennis is so wide open. And picking

:39:16. > :39:32.a favourite of someone who has not been past the first round.

:39:33. > :40:05.Can he do something to remedy the deficit?

:40:06. > :40:21.Pliskova thought about stopping and challenging, and that really

:40:22. > :40:27.affected her rhythm. Two former champions, Venus Williams and Petra

:40:28. > :40:28.Kvitova, even though Petra Kvitova is only playing her third tournament

:40:29. > :40:38.back after so many months. Lake Pliskova, she has had a victory

:40:39. > :40:51.on grass. Petra Kvitova got the victory in

:40:52. > :41:33.Birmingham, Pliskova in Eastbourne. She doesn't get a lot of pop on her

:41:34. > :41:42.serve. She needs the first served to connect because the second serve is

:41:43. > :41:43.very slow. Reminds me of another Russian with a troublesome second

:41:44. > :42:02.serve. Perfect. Amazing how many of these softer

:42:03. > :43:07.serves she has missed. Very subtle backhand slice. It is so

:43:08. > :43:17.handy to have it for when you get out of position. That's a good

:43:18. > :43:34.winner. Your second serve is going to be

:43:35. > :44:47.short. Pliskova get the double break and

:44:48. > :44:56.will serve for the opening set. A little variety, the slice so

:44:57. > :45:14.effective. Fen-2-mac is leading 5-1 in the

:45:15. > :46:03.first set. Watched over by her husband and

:46:04. > :46:08.coach. They are here with her daughter, Anna. She is one of four

:46:09. > :46:31.mothers in the draw. Nice to have some young kids around.

:46:32. > :46:45.Great to have Victoria Azarenka back on tour. She has her son with her.

:46:46. > :46:58.Pretty straightforward in the latter stages of the set.

:46:59. > :47:00.She is striking the ball cleanly with very little resistance from

:47:01. > :47:13.Rodina. There is. The opening set ends in a

:47:14. > :48:13.rather one-sided fashion. Pliskova's coach will be pretty

:48:14. > :48:30.happy with the way that his player has eased towards one set lead.

:48:31. > :48:38.Rodina was able to get to just one break point and was not able to

:48:39. > :48:46.convert whereas Pliskova, a couple of conversions but putting a lot of

:48:47. > :48:51.pressure on the serve. That net approach points, has done really

:48:52. > :49:06.well. She is using her strength in the forecourt as well. Five aces as

:49:07. > :49:11.well. Total winners, that is a very tidy first set. The number that I

:49:12. > :49:17.love the most is ten of 11 at the net. That the area she is starting

:49:18. > :49:18.to add to her game. I love the fact she chose to play is more doubles

:49:19. > :49:40.last year. Her game is about so much more than

:49:41. > :49:43.the serve and the ground strokes. She has some of those improvised

:49:44. > :49:47.shots where you come to the net. She's really worked on the volleys

:49:48. > :49:58.well. Her twin sister is also playing in the Championships.

:49:59. > :50:05.Here we go, set number two. Let's see if Rodina can do something about

:50:06. > :51:15.her domination so far. Starting to give herself a little

:51:16. > :51:26.running commentary, beating yourself up following the unforced errors.

:51:27. > :51:40.Starting to get frustrated. Does she have the tools and her game to

:51:41. > :51:59.bother? Cannot serve any bigger, absorbing from the baseline.

:52:00. > :52:03.Her fastest is 103. That's disheartening when it is business

:52:04. > :52:15.like that. Two break points, a second serve

:52:16. > :53:17.coming the way of Pliskova. She is striking the ball so crisply.

:53:18. > :53:30.With one shot she can crack open the point. So close to the sidelines.

:53:31. > :53:46.That is painful. Pliskova breaks in the opening game

:53:47. > :53:56.of the second set. Leading by a set and a break.

:53:57. > :54:07.Pliskova reached her first major final, losing to Angelique curve are

:54:08. > :54:09.in the final. She was the first Czech player to make the final since

:54:10. > :54:31.1993. Nicely done. At the US Open last

:54:32. > :54:35.year, it was such a huge breakthrough for Pliskova, who had

:54:36. > :54:41.never been past the third round. Saved a match point against Venus

:54:42. > :54:55.Williams, beat Serena Williams, who of course was world number one.

:54:56. > :55:00.After she got that confidence in the majors, she got to the semis at the

:55:01. > :55:24.French. That was really impressive. Clay is not her favourite surface.

:55:25. > :56:58.Is this a golden opportunity for Rodina to switch the flow of this

:56:59. > :57:30.match in her favour? And she's broken. An exchange of

:57:31. > :57:41.breaks of serve in the first couple of games of the second set.

:57:42. > :57:49.Nice job mentally for Rodina because this match was slipping away from

:57:50. > :58:06.She held her serve in the second game and then, six games in a row.

:58:07. > :58:18.It would not be a surprise if Rodina's Mind had wondered. She

:58:19. > :58:27.could have been forgiven for losing an element of concentration but she

:58:28. > :58:31.needs to restore it here. She played the first couple of points with a

:58:32. > :58:32.great sense of urgency. Trying to jar herself to get that

:58:33. > :59:12.concentration back. Pliskova going for a two dropping

:59:13. > :59:16.passes, the second one just a little high. Doing a good job of moving

:59:17. > :59:39.forward on that volley. Pliskova going from the towel, not

:59:40. > :59:40.to cool off but often when a player does that they just need to cool

:59:41. > :00:03.off, mentally. I think Pliskova could move up to

:00:04. > :00:22.the second serve return more. She's waiting for it to come to her.

:00:23. > :00:29.Oh, plenty of heat on that service return. Much better court

:00:30. > :00:32.positioning. She moved inside the baseline when it was still up near

:00:33. > :01:03.her shoulder. Snr oh, well played. - Oh, well

:01:04. > :01:04.played. The court One crowd is getting behind the underdog. As is

:01:05. > :01:44.the way at Wimbledon. Some of the best tennis of the match

:01:45. > :02:09.has been played in this particular game. Game 3 of set number 2.

:02:10. > :02:26.Rodina starting to hone in down the line. Deep in the corner.

:02:27. > :03:02.It's a beauty. And all Rodina can do is stand and stare.

:03:03. > :03:09.77 miles per hour on the second serve. Easy pickings for Karolina

:03:10. > :03:21.Pliskova who earns herself another break point.

:03:22. > :03:26.Another second serve being sent down again here.

:03:27. > :03:35.Or not. Double fault. Break of serve. Pliskova back in control

:03:36. > :03:47.after a little wobble. She leads by a set and by 2-1 games. SUE BARKER:

:03:48. > :03:51.We'll back on Court Number One in a moment. But out on Centre Court,

:03:52. > :03:55.Novak Djokovic's opponent, Martin Klizan was forced to retire because

:03:56. > :03:59.of a knee injury. It was obvious from the very early stages of the

:04:00. > :04:02.match he was struggling. It hampered his movement and they decided to

:04:03. > :04:08.risk no further injury and he elected to retire from the match.

:04:09. > :04:14.The number two seed, Novak Djokovic, the three-time champion through with

:04:15. > :04:17.us playing 11 games of the match. So sad to see Martin Klizan forced to

:04:18. > :04:33.withdraw from the Championship. Not the way that Novak would want to

:04:34. > :04:39.go through, either and a few moments ago Agnieszka Radwanska went through

:04:40. > :04:44.against Jankovic. Jan yank struggling with a back injury. She

:04:45. > :04:49.had a number of set points but in the end the former finalist was too

:04:50. > :04:57.good. And show goes through in a tricky first-round match. So a quick

:04:58. > :05:05.turn around for Roger Federer and Alexandr Dolgopolov do. This match

:05:06. > :05:10.is on BBC One. You can see the seven-time champion, Roger Federer a

:05:11. > :05:15.break of serve up. Over on court 12 we'll keep an eye on the red button,

:05:16. > :05:19.the features match where Katie Boulter, the wildcard from Leicester

:05:20. > :05:23.is 2-1 up with a break of serve. So we'll keep an eye on that. That's

:05:24. > :05:32.what is happening elsewhere. Back to Court One.

:05:33. > :05:36.COMMENTATOR: The first point of the game goes to Karolina Pliskova, as

:05:37. > :06:14.most of the points have. Twice she's been on Pliskova's wide

:06:15. > :06:22.court. She is using that second serve up the T. She really varies

:06:23. > :06:35.her service. Just spots in the box. Always keeps her opponent guessing.

:06:36. > :06:41.Never under any pressure, stress-free as she watches the ball,

:06:42. > :06:48.confident that it would land long Stress-free, a great demeanour.

:06:49. > :07:39.Absolutely. She always seems so even-keelside. -- keeled.

:07:40. > :07:44.There doesn't seem to be any immediate change in the direction

:07:45. > :07:48.this match is heading. 20 minutes for this second set so far. Pliskova

:07:49. > :08:04.keeping her distance on the score board. 1-3.

:08:05. > :08:12.Just the ninth unforced error from Pliskova, compared to 29 winners.

:08:13. > :08:36.Plus 20 differential. Ta is impressive. -- that is impressive.

:08:37. > :08:44.Oh, that is a fantastic passing shot. That's the problem with the

:08:45. > :08:49.approach cross-court. You leave that line open and it's very tough to get

:08:50. > :09:09.there on time but that was a terrific pass, nonetheless.

:09:10. > :09:19.Pliskova maintains her advantage. Has the first set and has a break in

:09:20. > :09:26.the second. 3-2. You can see the workings of the new roof, two years

:09:27. > :09:33.away, as Wimbledon will become the second of the Grand Slam venues to

:09:34. > :09:39.have two roofs. Of course Australia has three, in Melbourne Park on Rod

:09:40. > :09:44.Laver and on the Margaret Court Arena and the Arthur Ash stadium

:09:45. > :09:48.opened its roof last year, an amazing feat of engineering on the

:09:49. > :09:55.biggest tennis stadium in the world. 23,000 fans. Amazing, you really are

:09:56. > :10:02.up in the clouds in Row Z in that stadium but there is a roof now

:10:03. > :10:06.because it does rain a lot in late August, early September in New York.

:10:07. > :10:09.They needed to get it done because they were constantly playing Monday

:10:10. > :10:13.finals. There were three or four Monday finals in a row. The French,

:10:14. > :10:20.they are trying to play catch up. They don't have any. They will, in

:10:21. > :10:25.two or three years' time. They are a bit vague but one court at Roland

:10:26. > :11:10.Garros will have a roof before too long.

:11:11. > :11:17.Well, up for her serve so beautifully. She is 6'1", but gets

:11:18. > :12:05.good extension, good wrist snap at the top.

:12:06. > :12:55.A little too flat. Just a little bit of top-spin on that last forehand.

:12:56. > :13:05.Oh, demou - a sign of perhaps focus just deteriorating slightly. -- oh,

:13:06. > :13:12.now. This has happened before. She did press the reset button and reset

:13:13. > :13:18.her mind but, oh, this is one she'd hate to see again. 40-15 to two

:13:19. > :13:23.unforced errors off that forehand wing.

:13:24. > :13:27.And a second serve coming Rodina's way. Can she create a break point

:13:28. > :13:58.out of this situation? 11 of Pliskova's first serves have

:13:59. > :14:02.gone out wide to the backhand, five to the T. She really likes that out

:14:03. > :14:57.wide here. So, after exactly an hour of play on

:14:58. > :15:05.number one court, Karolina Pliskova h Pliskova has strengthened her

:15:06. > :15:10.lead. This is a must-hold game for the Russian.

:15:11. > :15:32.A positive start. Great body swerve there.

:15:33. > :16:25.Able to take all the pace off the ball for the clean winner.

:16:26. > :16:31.A rather lak lustre game from the number three seed but she's still

:16:32. > :16:54.ahead. So, just a chance to reflect as her

:16:55. > :16:59.coach watches on. This is just such an interesting story. The coach was

:17:00. > :17:09.with Petra Kvitova for seven or eight years. Was with her when she

:17:10. > :17:15.won both Wimbledons in 2011, 2014. When they split up, he was content

:17:16. > :17:21.not to travel any more, spend time in the Czech Republic, he has a

:17:22. > :17:30.young family but when Pliskova broke up with her coach at the end of

:17:31. > :17:37.2016, he got the call from Pliskova and he said it was troo good an

:17:38. > :17:41.opportunity to pass up, to work with such a talented player. So, back on

:17:42. > :17:42.the road he is, and the previous coach of Pliskova is now with

:17:43. > :18:22.Kvitova. So a bit of a swap there. Rodina struggling at times with the

:18:23. > :18:25.basics. She won't get too far in this match if she can't keep the

:18:26. > :18:51.rally alive. UMPIRE: A challenge on the call. The

:18:52. > :18:57.ball was called out. A late call. Yes, if the line judge isn't sure,

:18:58. > :19:00.get it checked. COMMENTATOR: It was in. Two blades of grass, that is he

:19:01. > :19:27.a all. -- that's all. Pliskova gets such a great angle on

:19:28. > :19:41.that serve out wide. She really takes her opponents off the court.

:19:42. > :19:50.She seems to be in cruise control now. Three points for a 5-3 lead in

:19:51. > :19:59.this second set. That ball took part of the frame of

:20:00. > :20:37.the racket. So Evgeniya Rodina on the brink of

:20:38. > :20:43.exiting at the first hurdle. A first round defeat. That at the hands of

:20:44. > :20:50.Karolina Pliskova and surely it is not far away as she prepares to

:20:51. > :21:33.serve to stay in this match at 3-5. Well, she just kept that return back

:21:34. > :21:51.in play, right up the middle. That's a good service game from the

:21:52. > :21:53.Russian. Keeps herself in this match, just, after the change of

:21:54. > :22:10.ends, Pliskova will serve for it. Well, Evgeniya Rodina has had some

:22:11. > :22:14.moments in this match. Hasn't really been given the space to flourish by

:22:15. > :22:26.Karolina Pliskova. Her knee is clearly an issue. She's

:22:27. > :22:33.got it taped and ice has been applied at several of the changes of

:22:34. > :22:38.end. It's interesting this, applying the ice to injuries, mid-match. I've

:22:39. > :22:43.started to see it for the first time, just in the last month. We've

:22:44. > :22:48.been told in the past that you don't ice within an hour of playing. Maybe

:22:49. > :22:58.it is just a bit of time that you put the ice on. Definitely changed.

:22:59. > :23:06.Pliskova has to think that she's going to hold this.

:23:07. > :23:13.There is a buzz in the crowd. Something is causing a disturbance.

:23:14. > :23:24.UMPIRE: Thank you, please take your places, thank you.

:23:25. > :23:33.COMMENTATOR: We're ready to go now. Almost ready to go. 68 minutes

:23:34. > :24:06.played and Pliskova is at 5-4 serving for the match.

:24:07. > :24:10.Rodina is really angry now. Head down. She's chuntering away to

:24:11. > :24:32.herself. Well you could predict a game like

:24:33. > :24:43.this from Pliskova, on closing a match out. She's won 36 matches this

:24:44. > :24:48.year, tied for the most on tour. That one flew up off the line to

:24:49. > :25:22.give Karolina Pliskova three match points.

:25:23. > :25:36.That's it. It didn't take long in the end. And the number three seed

:25:37. > :25:40.eases her way into the second round with victory over Evgeniya Rodina.

:25:41. > :25:46.And takes and enjoys the applause of the appreciative tennis fans on the

:25:47. > :25:52.number one court. An hour and 11 minutes. A nice little warm-up for

:25:53. > :26:00.tougher matches to come for Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova should be happy

:26:01. > :26:08.with that first-round match-up, nine aces. 35 winners. Kept it to a tidy

:26:09. > :26:10.13 unforced errors. Really just played that one nervous game to open

:26:11. > :26:23.the match. APPLAUSE

:26:24. > :26:33.Generous applause for Evgeniya Rodina, followed off court by the

:26:34. > :26:41.number three seed, who stopped just stopped to sign a few tennis balls.

:26:42. > :26:45.Tennis fans from all over the world purchase the big replica balls and

:26:46. > :26:53.make it a mission to get as many signatures as they can. It's not

:26:54. > :27:05.just the kids, grown-ups do it as well. A long name to sign - Karolina

:27:06. > :27:17.Pliskova. I'm sure she's got a shorter, truncated version.

:27:18. > :27:25.So, a fairly straightforward work youted for Karolina Pliskova. She is

:27:26. > :27:31.-- workout for Karolina Pliskova. She's won 6-4, 6-4 and she's talking

:27:32. > :27:36.to Lee. Congratulations, you made the first set look easy, the second

:27:37. > :27:40.set tougher yu I'm sure you are pleased with how you played.

:27:41. > :27:45.Definitely. It is my second appearance in this court. But I

:27:46. > :27:49.enjoyed to play there. I hope I can be better in the next round. You

:27:50. > :27:52.obviously won the trophy at Eastbourne. You come into this as a

:27:53. > :27:58.real danger to so many different players out there. How do you feel

:27:59. > :28:03.your grass court game is just now? Well, so far good. I have one title

:28:04. > :28:06.and started well today. I think I can still improve in the next one

:28:07. > :28:11.and hopefully my game can be dangerous on the grass this year if

:28:12. > :28:19.I serve, if I serve well I think I have a chance it beat everyone. What

:28:20. > :28:25.do you know about your next opponent? Goods to know. I have not

:28:26. > :28:31.seen the draw. I'm expecting a tough one. I don't think we've met. I know

:28:32. > :28:37.her well. We've practised a few times so expecting a tough one. . In

:28:38. > :28:42.terms of the whole experience, how nice is it to be back, the crowd

:28:43. > :28:49.gave you a round of applause. Well, I was happy it was almost full, the

:28:50. > :28:53.court, it is always better to play n tennis, with such a great crowd.

:28:54. > :28:57.So... Congratulations. And this is how she polished off the match and

:28:58. > :29:00.made her way through to the second round, quite comfortably, unreturned

:29:01. > :29:07.serve down the centreline. She served nine aces and 17 unreturned

:29:08. > :29:13.serves. Certainly the cornerstone of her match much she's no one-trick

:29:14. > :29:16.pony, though. She has excellent all-court game but the serve wins

:29:17. > :29:26.her so many free points in every match on every surface. But

:29:27. > :29:30.particularly here on grass. And when she's holding serve easily, that

:29:31. > :29:37.really frees her up on the return games. Pliskova only faced two break

:29:38. > :29:54.points today. So, the spectators didn't have long

:29:55. > :30:00.away from the court. Just an hour, since the hour or so, hour an a

:30:01. > :30:04.quarter since the Milos Raonic match ended. They had an hour and 11

:30:05. > :30:13.minutes of Pliskova's victory. So they're eager for more tennis and

:30:14. > :30:17.the men are next on Court One with a very exciting match in prospect as

:30:18. > :30:20.Dominic Thiem takes on Vasek Pospisil, Thiem in position of one

:30:21. > :30:25.of the best of the single-handed backhands on tour right now. Always

:30:26. > :30:28.a good man to watch. He's playing Vasek Pospisil, who's been a

:30:29. > :30:36.champion here at Wimbledon in doubles in the past. Won the title

:30:37. > :30:43.with Jack Sock of the USA in about 2012, I think.

:30:44. > :30:52.Victory for Karolina Pliskova. The number three seed is safely through

:30:53. > :30:59.to round two. SUE BARKER: Karolina Pliskova, many

:31:00. > :31:02.people'stip for the title. We will leave Court Number One show you what

:31:03. > :31:12.happened with Katie Boulter from Leicester, the 21-year-old playing

:31:13. > :31:16.the experienced American Christina McHale a disappointing end but she

:31:17. > :31:21.certainly played a very good match and I'm sure she has a big future at

:31:22. > :31:26.Wimbledon, but it is Christina McHale who goes through to the next

:31:27. > :31:34.round. Huge disappointment, I am sure. She has learned a lot from her

:31:35. > :31:46.first at Wimbledon. One other result. Petra Martic of Croatia has

:31:47. > :31:55.put the 20th seed out, Daria Gavrilova. Martic of Croatia

:31:56. > :32:04.defeating the 20th seed 10-8. Well done to her. Disappointment out on

:32:05. > :32:09.Centre Court. Martin Klizan, he defaulted in his match against Novak

:32:10. > :32:16.Djokovic. An hour later, here is Alexandr Dolgopolov, walking to the

:32:17. > :32:21.net. We had the trainer on. You could hear the disappointment in the

:32:22. > :32:26.crowd. He is forced to retire. The Centre Court crowd thinking they

:32:27. > :32:31.would see Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, have only seen a set and a

:32:32. > :32:34.bit of both. They are hugely disappointed. Federer through and is

:32:35. > :32:40.still on course for and eighth Wimbledon title.

:32:41. > :32:49.We will wait to see what matches are put onto Centre Court. They have a

:32:50. > :32:52.couple of stand-bys. In the meantime, Court Number Two, Thomas

:32:53. > :32:57.Burdick against Jeremy Chardy, two well-known faces on Court Number Two

:32:58. > :33:04.and early stages of the match. Thomas Berdych leading 2-1.

:33:05. > :33:17.Let's join our commentators. COMMENTATOR: Tomas Berdych with a

:33:18. > :33:31.glimmer of opportunity for break points. He has been caught out by

:33:32. > :33:38.the bounce. He was caught in two minds. Three break points for Tomas

:33:39. > :33:45.Berdych. This is what happens when he is zero and four against this

:33:46. > :33:47.opponent. He panicked. Brushed it into the net unnecessarily. A lot of

:33:48. > :34:14.work to do for the French man now. The mis-hits secured the break point

:34:15. > :34:18.for Tomas Berdych. Thomas Berdych the run-up of 2010 here looking very

:34:19. > :35:02.sharp. This looks like a Third He is a man who stands very tall. He

:35:03. > :35:05.enjoys the grass. He has been semifinal or beyond in all four

:35:06. > :35:35.Grand Slams. Both players are where they are

:35:36. > :35:41.desperate to get on the front foot after the serve lands. When they

:35:42. > :35:50.find their spots behind serve number one, they are dangerous. Chardy with

:35:51. > :35:51.a toehold against the Berdych serve for the first time in the match

:35:52. > :36:07.himself. Chardy looking quizzically at the

:36:08. > :36:28.grass beyond the baseline. A force area from the backhand wing.

:36:29. > :36:36.This is what happens at this stage. He has just lost his last service

:36:37. > :36:40.game and there is hesitancy. He is unsettled already. That is what a

:36:41. > :37:11.seed like Berdych will do to you. That serve was at 129 mph. A rifle

:37:12. > :37:41.shot. An unforced error on the approach.

:37:42. > :38:04.Berdych consolidates the break. Berdych has put himself into a

:38:05. > :38:09.commanding position. A break to the good in the set. Rattling off four

:38:10. > :38:19.straight points after finding himself in a 0-40 hole. I came with

:38:20. > :38:25.one of my players, Josh, who came up against this young man in the junior

:38:26. > :38:29.event in his opening round and Thomas Berdych was the person the

:38:30. > :38:34.other side of the net. A spotty, tall team. He has not changed much.

:38:35. > :38:41.He does not have spots, of course, but he is incredibly strong and even

:38:42. > :38:47.at that tender AG had a big serve. Josh lost 7-5, 6-4. Did himself the

:38:48. > :38:53.world of good in terms of confidence but I think Thomas Berdych went on

:38:54. > :38:58.to win that year. He has always been a big force on grass and his game

:38:59. > :39:00.has evolved nicely over the years, and there is somebody doing

:39:01. > :39:06.meditation. You see the players doing that when they change ends.

:39:07. > :39:10.People spilling in thick and fast to get a glimpse of Berdych. He is

:39:11. > :39:37.sitting pretty at the moment. The radar of Chardy has gone a

:39:38. > :40:09.little bit all -- awry. It is like boxing quit. You have to

:40:10. > :40:13.plan until you are punched in the face -- the boxing quote. He has

:40:14. > :40:15.come up with the strategy, I am sure, but he is up against Berdych

:40:16. > :40:33.who is smothering him. He knows if he does not find his

:40:34. > :40:38.spots regulate, Berdych will be all over him and that in itself is

:40:39. > :40:40.making him tight. There is no leeway against a man like Tomas Berdych.

:40:41. > :41:01.All very little. A nice analogy, Berdych in fourth

:41:02. > :41:07.out of five gears, can cruise through the match because he is a

:41:08. > :41:13.heavyweight. Chardy you feel has to play fifth gear all the way to

:41:14. > :41:16.contest this. Short of the men, slightly lighter in frame. -- the

:41:17. > :41:30.shorter of the two man. Act knowledge in the service hold

:41:31. > :41:36.after falling behind. -- he is acknowledging the service hold.

:41:37. > :41:39.Chardy has to find a way to get a foothold into this man's service

:41:40. > :41:48.game. 0-30, he had last time, but he was

:41:49. > :42:33.denied. That forehand almost buckling the

:42:34. > :42:55.racket in the hands of Jeremy Chardy. Struggling with the pick-up.

:42:56. > :43:16.You feel sympathy for Chardy. It was a great approach and Chardy got the

:43:17. > :43:39.ball up and down well but a great volley from Berdych.

:43:40. > :43:47.Wrong-footed with the forehand. It was the way he deflected it back. So

:43:48. > :43:53.effortlessly from Berdych. This is a typical serve from a top player. A

:43:54. > :44:00.decent return from Chardy. Berdych drops his haunches. Deflects that

:44:01. > :44:03.one. Beautifully done. As we thought coming into the first serve, a

:44:04. > :44:25.priority for both men. Because Berdych has wriggle room he

:44:26. > :44:31.will consider that a positive miss. It did not miss by much. He struck

:44:32. > :44:36.it well. He has leeway to secure the game and with it a possible 5-2

:44:37. > :44:44.lead. Somehow Chardy needs to direct returns to the backhand of Berdych

:44:45. > :44:52.but priority number one is just getting back into the court.

:44:53. > :44:57.Fortune favouring Thomas Berdych. But also tough on another forceful

:44:58. > :45:20.first serve. 124 mph. For me a big statistic is Jeremy

:45:21. > :45:27.Chardy is none from three on second serve points won. Berdych four from

:45:28. > :45:31.five, which indicates when they get mid-rally, the player from the Czech

:45:32. > :45:38.Republic is very much favourite. That is a big factor. When they

:45:39. > :45:42.start trading mid-rally, as anticipated, Thomas Berdych very

:45:43. > :45:49.much in the driving seat of those situations, and he is what, three

:45:50. > :45:57.inches taller. A more burly frame. The playmaker. Chardy has it within

:45:58. > :46:04.him to beat Berdych but he has to play at the pinnacle of his

:46:05. > :46:08.abilities throughout. In their four previous meetings, Thomas Berdych

:46:09. > :46:12.has emerged victorious in all four, the most recent meeting at this

:46:13. > :46:21.tournament at this stage two years ago. Berdych prevailed in four sets.

:46:22. > :46:27.Three of which were decided by a tie-break, which is how close Chardy

:46:28. > :46:33.has come. He has yet to emerge as the victor as he looks to progress

:46:34. > :46:41.to the second round of Wimbledon. For the seventh time. Currently down

:46:42. > :47:07.a break, serving with you balls. -- with new balls.

:47:08. > :47:16.He would normally make that slice nine times out of ten.

:47:17. > :47:55.That was the first point he has won on his second serve. There was more

:47:56. > :48:02.slice on it and he fully committed. Earlier, there was hesitancy. Now he

:48:03. > :48:09.is a lot more into it. That is how it has got to be. Front foot tennis

:48:10. > :48:14.from the French man. It is not enough to wait in the rally with big

:48:15. > :48:15.Berdych. You have to try to bulldoze him out of points quicker than he

:48:16. > :49:20.does you. Interesting to note Berdych stepped

:49:21. > :49:24.up to receive the second serve. Practically bisecting the baseline

:49:25. > :49:39.when he struck it. It brings about deuce.

:49:40. > :49:49.A well executed overhead by Jeremy Chardy. This is an important game

:49:50. > :49:55.for Chardy. If nothing else, psychologically, if he could stay in

:49:56. > :50:00.touch. On the coat-tails of Berdych, it is important. Even if you lost

:50:01. > :50:04.this set, it would bode well going into set two. His third ace of the

:50:05. > :50:19.match. Now the serve of Berdych, which has

:50:20. > :50:46.been dependable so far. Using that to close out this first set.

:50:47. > :51:03.Over 80% of points won behind his first serve, Thomas Berdych.

:51:04. > :51:10.When he is landing his first serve and Chardy is in the rally, Chardy

:51:11. > :51:34.is way beyond the baseline due to the weight of shot.

:51:35. > :52:22.It was the backhand that produced the winning volley but during the

:52:23. > :52:27.course of the point, the forehand blasted Chardy off the court. The

:52:28. > :52:37.number 11 seed takes the opening set in 27 minutes.

:52:38. > :52:45.It was a dictatorial display from Thomas Berdych. An audible crunch

:52:46. > :52:51.every time he committed to the forehand side and serve in

:52:52. > :53:01.particular as we peruse the statistics. Look at the second serve

:53:02. > :53:06.points won disparity. Winners and unforced errors, both in positive

:53:07. > :53:10.territory, so it has been a watchable match. High-quality

:53:11. > :53:14.serving from both. Berdych backing up his serve better than Chardy, who

:53:15. > :53:30.lost the solitary break of serve in the opening set. Thomas Berdych on

:53:31. > :53:38.the front foot throughout. Can he continue in that vein? Will there be

:53:39. > :53:46.a blip, and allowance, that lets Chardy into this?

:53:47. > :54:01.UMPIRE: Time. Take your seat quickly, please, ladies and

:54:02. > :54:04.gentlemen. Berdych electing to change his kit but it is this man

:54:05. > :54:14.who needs a change in fortunes. Jeremy Chardy. Just the one break

:54:15. > :54:20.during the course of the opening set. It proved terminal in the

:54:21. > :55:26.context of the set itself. That is a terrific response from

:55:27. > :55:41.Jeremy Chardy. Any disappointment at losing the

:55:42. > :55:49.first set put to the back of his mind immediately. Producing a very

:55:50. > :55:54.solid service game. Psychologically, this is big. He can now hopefully

:55:55. > :56:01.keep his nose in front in this set, which could be important and might,

:56:02. > :56:05.if he can, get to the business end of the set, maybe a tie-break

:56:06. > :56:11.against Berdych and we saw a couple of years ago he took one of the

:56:12. > :56:13.three tie-breaks on offer. He has to hold onto his serve. That

:56:14. > :56:27.imperative. I guess from a return perspective he

:56:28. > :56:33.has to change the look to Berdych. He knew that coming in, maybe stand

:56:34. > :56:37.back, step to one side, and are Berdych to serve in different

:56:38. > :56:42.directions and see if you can get inside the head of Berdych. It is an

:56:43. > :56:46.uphill battle, but you have to try something different. If you do what

:56:47. > :56:55.you have always done, you will get what you have always got.

:56:56. > :57:03.A well crafted point. Berdych giving the impression of a man playing

:57:04. > :57:36.comfortably within himself. One of the best exponents of serve

:57:37. > :57:41.and fur shot in the game, Berdych. -- first shot. He has beaten all of

:57:42. > :57:51.the big four players in majors. That for me is the outstanding strapline.

:57:52. > :58:24.Both players racing through their service games.

:58:25. > :58:32.That was better from Chardy. Real commitment. He is ranked just

:58:33. > :58:38.outside 70 in the world and Thomas Berdych as low as 15. The difference

:58:39. > :58:44.is that Berdych is totally committed to his game plan. Chardy is still

:58:45. > :58:51.hesitant. Better, it is starting to build. He is getting the flow behind

:58:52. > :58:56.him. The initial couple of points in his service games are critical. And

:58:57. > :58:57.then the self trust, and the momentum in the performance comes

:58:58. > :59:04.along as well. And guess what, if you hold serve to

:59:05. > :59:38.love. Chardy's presence at the net proving

:59:39. > :59:54.impassable. The response he has produced is

:59:55. > :00:07.impressive. Showing no hangover of conceding the opening set in 27

:00:08. > :00:12.minutes. I would love to be a fly on the wall when the French camp were

:00:13. > :00:16.out to dinner in terms of discussion, what is the tactical

:00:17. > :00:21.game plan? He knew he had to bring his best and with that comes a

:00:22. > :00:26.pre-match nervous state as a consequence. There is no leeway. If

:00:27. > :00:32.you do not bring more than eight out of ten, you will be crushed. That is

:00:33. > :00:42.tough. It is a tough, tough draw for Jeremy Chardy and one in which you

:00:43. > :00:45.would imagine if he is down to 71 in the world, one of his goals would be

:00:46. > :00:48.top 15. In terms of preparation leading into Wimbledon, round of 32

:00:49. > :00:55.at Eastbourne. In Queen's, coming through two rounds of qualifying.

:00:56. > :01:02.Ultimately losing in the second round against Feliciano Lopez, who

:01:03. > :01:04.went on to take Queen's, of course. He also beat Berdych en route to

:01:05. > :01:35.that championship. That was great French front foot

:01:36. > :01:41.tennis. The crowd enjoying that, seeing him so free swinging. That is

:01:42. > :01:47.how it has got to be. We have seen some great tennis from this man over

:01:48. > :01:47.the years, but it has been few and far between, those performances of

:01:48. > :02:22.late. We have seen a few injuries in this

:02:23. > :02:26.competition here. Berdych, six feet five, always an uncomfortable moment

:02:27. > :02:31.when you see a player losing their footing on the grass, but seems to

:02:32. > :02:33.be OK. I think it was a straightforward slip, he is OK.

:02:34. > :02:58.Which is good to see. He got there, just couldn't control

:02:59. > :03:09.the rocket had. What an effort from Chardy. Soft hands from Berdych. He

:03:10. > :03:13.is pretty nimble, Chardy. It was very makeable. His dad is a lawyer,

:03:14. > :03:20.his brother is a lawyer. It seems he is almost too cognitive in this

:03:21. > :03:24.match. It is a narrow thought the bridge, you cannot carry too many

:03:25. > :03:42.thoughts. It has got to be simple. See it, bash it.

:03:43. > :03:50.Both players staying behind the baseline. It is the longest rally of

:03:51. > :03:54.the match. Berdych takes the point. During the course of that point, the

:03:55. > :04:32.ball just barely skimming over the tape.

:04:33. > :04:42.Much better from Chardy. That is the first sliced backhand we have seen

:04:43. > :04:48.him make in a while. It Lyft through the Berdych court. Berdych's error

:04:49. > :04:57.on the backhand wind brings up the first break opportunity.

:04:58. > :05:07.He took the speed of it, but the direction was perfect. A slumber for

:05:08. > :05:24.down the centreline on this occasion for Tomas Berdych.

:05:25. > :05:29.Berdych, knew the challenge was imminent from the Frenchman, has

:05:30. > :05:34.raised the bar himself. Bearing in mind he was trailing 0-30 in this

:05:35. > :05:37.game, clawed it back to 30-30. This is really strong tennis from

:05:38. > :06:11.Berdych. Berdych staves of the break point.

:06:12. > :06:20.And we remain on serve in this second set. That was a stern

:06:21. > :06:23.examination. His serve was under scrutiny, that is for sure. Came

:06:24. > :07:19.through unblemished. Again. That last unreturnable serve was a

:07:20. > :07:21.clever one from Chardy. Right into the left hip of Berdych, just

:07:22. > :08:00.handcuffing him. After Berdych had to fend off a

:08:01. > :08:11.break point. Stark contrast, semper aggro -- Chardy has the advantage of

:08:12. > :08:16.serving first. Chardy doing his best just to crank up the pressure that

:08:17. > :08:22.is being applied to the 15th ranked player in the world. You feel the

:08:23. > :08:26.shackles are. Chardy finding his range and starting to relax and

:08:27. > :08:33.settle into this match. When the player relaxes, the symphony begins.

:08:34. > :08:40.There is an element of relaxation in these racket sports. He is finding

:08:41. > :08:45.that right now, you feel. Whereas in the opening set, there was thanks. I

:08:46. > :08:49.think that is because Berdych broke his serve on the. That was wounding.

:08:50. > :08:55.Now hopefully he is back on track and keeping his nose in front. Long

:08:56. > :09:03.may it continue. It will make it an more watchable much, but there is

:09:04. > :09:13.barely every seat in the match. 4000 seater stadium. Berdych, with work

:09:14. > :09:20.to do, playing catch-up in the second set, but asset to the good.

:09:21. > :09:38.-- asset. He has had a lot of traffic going to

:09:39. > :09:45.that backhand side. You can see him trying to simulate in the shadow

:09:46. > :09:51.swinging. That is where Berdych has been directing most of his attack.

:09:52. > :10:10.If he goes to the Chardy forehand, it has been hard.

:10:11. > :10:27.Forceful hitting from both players. It is incessant. There is no letup

:10:28. > :10:29.at all. Lovely forehand finish put away. Look at the court position as

:10:30. > :11:11.well, right inside the baseline. And unreturnable serve followed by

:11:12. > :11:16.NA is from Tomas Berdych. -- by in ace. The edges ahead in the ace

:11:17. > :11:23.count. Ties things up three games all in this second set. Where only

:11:24. > :11:28.Chardy has had a glimmer of a break point opportunity. He couldn't

:11:29. > :11:45.convert so we remain on serve. Chardy to serve, three games all.

:11:46. > :11:56.That will have to go down as an unforced error. Contrast to what has

:11:57. > :11:57.been taking place so far. It was Berdych who was way behind the

:11:58. > :12:40.baseline. Clever choice of serve from the

:12:41. > :12:45.Frenchman. Opting to go to the body of Berdych. If it is going right, it

:12:46. > :12:53.has to go very wide because the wingspan of the Czech player is

:12:54. > :13:27.vast. 128 mph on his fifth ace of the match.

:13:28. > :13:43.UMPIRE: Game, Chardy. New balls, please. On that final point of the

:13:44. > :13:49.seventh game, it was Chardy who was orchestrating things wonderfully.

:13:50. > :13:55.Pulling Berdych left and right, testing his mobility. With all this

:13:56. > :14:02."To aim at, he make no mistake to hold serve. The service games look a

:14:03. > :14:12.lot more credible. He looks like he was playing of his highest career

:14:13. > :14:15.high, 25. He looks good, it is the return game is that somehow, he

:14:16. > :14:26.needs a little extra or a little inspiration from somewhere. First

:14:27. > :14:37.serve percentage has risen for Jeremy Chardy. Not as efficient as

:14:38. > :14:50.he was in the first set, but still, he has conceded a break. Chardy's

:14:51. > :14:56.level has risen. Berdych, still doing his job and holding serve. We

:14:57. > :15:20.remain on serve, Berdych to serve. New balls.

:15:21. > :15:31.What a shot! Forehand from behind the baseline. Fantastic winner.

:15:32. > :15:37.Really going after this with abandon. Look at this, the dynamics

:15:38. > :15:45.around that, throwing the hips through and the shoulders following

:15:46. > :15:54.suit. Great rotational power. It is really igniting nicely now, this

:15:55. > :15:59.match. Winners are bound on show Court Two. Berdych gets on the front

:16:00. > :16:24.foot and crushes that down the line. The final overhead well executed

:16:25. > :17:09.indeed by Berdych. For me, a big change in this second

:17:10. > :17:12.set. Chardy is more intact and up together of his backhand side. We

:17:13. > :17:16.saw several missed in the first set, but not now. More watertight of the

:17:17. > :17:48.drive backhand side. He has done it once again. A

:17:49. > :17:58.wonderful passing shot and Jeremy Chardy brings up break point on the

:17:59. > :18:02.Tomas Berdych serve. Nine times out of ten when you see Berdych coming

:18:03. > :18:06.forward inside the baseline, lining up for the short ball, he is the

:18:07. > :18:08.winner. But Chardy wriggled out of jail. Big moment for the Frenchman

:18:09. > :18:24.here. He has done it. Chardy gets the

:18:25. > :18:38.break to go ahead in this second set. Now, he will be serving for the

:18:39. > :18:50.set. This point, their reaction was greeted with a roar of approval from

:18:51. > :19:02.Chardy. Can he consolidate and draw level at a set each?

:19:03. > :19:26.It has been mesmerising throughout the second set.

:19:27. > :19:36.He is bulldozing his way through these points now. Not fair, wounding

:19:37. > :19:56.the Lions team. Berdych trying to encourage himself.

:19:57. > :20:04.Pumping his fist but producing the winner in the open court. That was

:20:05. > :20:10.another illustration that if you step off the gas in the point and

:20:11. > :20:18.give him an end, Chardy will grasp it with both hands.

:20:19. > :20:36.Has to be high-risk, high reward. Go big or go home.

:20:37. > :20:53.Berdych unleashing the power, once again. Again, the big toll check

:20:54. > :21:04.getting on the front foot. Thrashed it downwards.

:21:05. > :21:08.It is Chardy continuing to play free swinging tennis to bring up set

:21:09. > :22:04.point. Brilliant second set of tennis from

:22:05. > :22:09.Jeremy Chardy. Breaking Tomas Berdych in the eighth game and

:22:10. > :22:22.consolidating the break to take the second set 6-3 in 33 minutes.

:22:23. > :22:36.You feel delighted for the Frenchman. It was an exemplary set

:22:37. > :22:40.of tennis. Unforced errors, Berdych is plus seven. Chardy is plus eight.

:22:41. > :22:45.More to the point, Chardy took the solitary break of serve in that set.

:22:46. > :22:53.Incredible, very, very high level and Berdych only winning a third

:22:54. > :23:04.points in set two. Good job from the Frenchman, but can he continue in

:23:05. > :23:09.that vein. His response, after conceding the opening set was

:23:10. > :23:13.emphatic. He came out, raced through his service games and there was a

:23:14. > :23:16.discernible increase in the intensity of the Tennessee was

:23:17. > :23:24.playing. Going for big shots, swinging more freely. -- tennis he

:23:25. > :23:28.was playing. It was Berdych who buckled, conceding the eighth game.

:23:29. > :23:32.Never a good time to concede a break, but by conceding at that

:23:33. > :23:39.point, it gave Chardy the opportunity to serve out for this

:23:40. > :23:47.second set. He did so with aplomb. They are delighted, aren't they, the

:23:48. > :23:48.Chardy camp. In-laws, girlfriend, and they are all there geeing him

:23:49. > :23:57.on. We are tied at one set all. Third

:23:58. > :24:37.set, Berdych serving. He had Berdych on the run. He knows

:24:38. > :25:14.that is an opportunity gone begging. First above faults of the match from

:25:15. > :25:50.Tomas Berdych. -- double fault. SUE BARKER: one set all. We are

:25:51. > :25:58.having to leave this match on BBC Two, but it does continue on the red

:25:59. > :26:04.button and the BBC Sport website. But here on BBC Two, we are going to

:26:05. > :26:10.take you to Centre Court after the two retirements, Caroline Wozniacki

:26:11. > :26:16.is taking on the May above us, ranked 42 in the world. This is for

:26:17. > :26:18.games all in the first set. Let's join our commentators, Liz Smiley

:26:19. > :26:42.alongside Matthew Chilton. COMMENTATOR: Both players serving

:26:43. > :26:43.solidly. Really good entertainment with some long, hard-hitting

:26:44. > :27:07.rallies. We knew what to expect from Caroline

:27:08. > :27:11.Wozniacki but it is Babos who has come out of the gates firing. She

:27:12. > :27:17.has made ten winners, nine unforced errors and that will be the key for

:27:18. > :27:55.this match, Babos, to keep the unforced errors to a minimum.

:27:56. > :28:01.She seemed to change her mind halfway through the backswing. Very

:28:02. > :28:06.often the reason that happens, you have a quick look to see where your

:28:07. > :28:15.opponent is going and you decide to go the other way. Babos made the

:28:16. > :28:35.move and Wozniacki paid attention to it. Could be a dangerous mistake.

:28:36. > :28:52.There is the Wozniacki connections box. There is a challenge here. I

:28:53. > :28:53.thought I saw a little puff of something right. Let's see what

:28:54. > :29:40.Hawk-Eye makes of this. That is a let off. Babos, a long way

:29:41. > :30:09.behind the baseline. Wozniacki, inside the court.

:30:10. > :30:24.A few more unforced errors starting to creep into Babos' game here.

:30:25. > :30:32.Wozniacki is back in front. Babos will serve to stay in the opening

:30:33. > :30:53.set at 45-macro. -- 4-5. Caroline Wozniacki having a

:30:54. > :31:01.discussion. Telling the umpire to pay attention. Could have got quite

:31:02. > :31:10.awkward the Wozniacki at 1530. This lady here, Timea Babos, doing a good

:31:11. > :31:15.job. She lost her serve early, then broke straight back. A lot of

:31:16. > :31:21.pressure on her. You hit a lot of balls, cover a lot of ground and the

:31:22. > :31:25.pressure to hit big of both sides, to have the courage of your

:31:26. > :31:30.conviction to keep playing like that without making the unforced errors,

:31:31. > :31:34.is a challenge for this lady. She played three grass courts of events

:31:35. > :31:43.ahead of Wimbledon and went out in the first round in all of them. In

:31:44. > :31:50.the new event in Majorca and then at Eastbourne. The first-round exits.

:31:51. > :31:52.She is desperate for a win. Bit of scoreboard pressure here for Babos.

:31:53. > :32:10.Serving in the opening set. Wozniacki, wants something tidied

:32:11. > :32:14.up. A towel, from the grass to the chair! Let's hope she is that tidy

:32:15. > :32:28.at home! She tried to steer it. Just a little

:32:29. > :33:05.bit careful, Babos. Couple of unforced areas, badly

:33:06. > :33:08.timed unforced errors from Babos. She has hit 12 in total. Wozniacki

:33:09. > :33:26.can sense a big opening here. Wozniacki wants this double-checked.

:33:27. > :33:31.She's not convinced it was an ace. It was pretty fast. If it is an ace,

:33:32. > :33:55.it will be the quickest serve of the match and it is in. 190 mph. -- 119.

:33:56. > :34:26.A good angle from Wozniacki. Set points.

:34:27. > :34:39.Lucky first serve that time from Babos. She will get another crack at

:34:40. > :34:49.it. And a second ace. No arguing that time. Good variation from

:34:50. > :35:13.Babos. That one going out wide on the line.

:35:14. > :35:25.That was a terrific return of serve. Set point.

:35:26. > :35:31.SUE BARKER: We will be back for the second set a the moment but we can

:35:32. > :35:37.take you around the grounds and show you what is happening elsewhere.

:35:38. > :35:43.Grigg Dimitrov, seeded 13 at the Championships, involved in a first

:35:44. > :35:50.set tie-break. A real battle against Diego Schwartzman and you can watch

:35:51. > :35:59.that on the red button. And a break of serve in that tie-break. And

:36:00. > :36:04.Feliciano Lopez, champion at Queen's, always a danger on the

:36:05. > :36:13.grass. Seeded 19. Early stages of that match. You can follow it on the

:36:14. > :36:18.BBC Sport website. Dominic Thiem, one of the rising stars of the game.

:36:19. > :36:41.He has had a terrific season of the clay-court.

:36:42. > :36:50.Light beginning to change across Centre Court. Still bathed in

:36:51. > :36:52.sunshine. Hats and sunglasses still being worn. An entertaining first

:36:53. > :37:18.set of tennis. Wozniacki has played explosive

:37:19. > :37:25.tennis at times. And having won the first set, the break of serve, she

:37:26. > :37:54.will to open the second. Giving her an immediate advantage potentially.

:37:55. > :38:05.Babos immediately on the attack. And a smile. No change in tactics

:38:06. > :38:38.though. Going for broke on every shot. Pretty much.

:38:39. > :38:48.Lucky to get away with a second serve, Wozniacki. 72 mph. Babos had

:38:49. > :38:53.a good crack at it but went straight back to Wozniacki. That is part of

:38:54. > :39:22.her game that can get tight. That one hitting the frame.

:39:23. > :39:28.A terrific start to the second set for the Hungarian. Three break

:39:29. > :39:42.points right here. Wozniacki is unhappy. She is

:39:43. > :39:44.managing the ball kids at her end, making sure they have balls on the

:39:45. > :40:00.correct side. She is quite bossy. She did not know much about that,

:40:01. > :40:06.Wozniacki. She throws the ball away in disgust. She has not made any

:40:07. > :40:13.friends in that opening game. Certainly with the way she was

:40:14. > :40:17.instructing the ball boys and girls to go about their business and the

:40:18. > :40:25.way she threw the ball away in disgust. The Centre Court crowd will

:40:26. > :40:32.get behind the underdog Babos here. This is Caroline throwing the ball

:40:33. > :40:38.away in disgust after losing her serve to love.

:40:39. > :41:29.Caroline Wozniacki wants the ball kids to have the balls on one side

:41:30. > :41:30.and Babos wants them to have the balls on the other side. They cannot

:41:31. > :42:08.win. Good variation and good use of the

:42:09. > :42:12.court by Babos. The slice short and wide. Very effective on the grass

:42:13. > :42:35.court. It was long. Up until then she

:42:36. > :42:39.played the perfect point. It was not a confident looking volley. She came

:42:40. > :42:59.to the net but did not look committed to the shot.

:43:00. > :43:26.Wozniacki knew that was a chance to engineer a break point.

:43:27. > :43:41.Babos has a head of steam in this set.

:43:42. > :43:55.Now the ball crew at the other end will have to get used to Wozniacki's

:43:56. > :44:20.preferences for which side the supply will come from.

:44:21. > :44:27.She is not a happy camper, Caroline Wozniacki. That is more words to the

:44:28. > :44:32.umpire. The balls are not where they want to be. She was complaining to

:44:33. > :44:38.the umpire about something and the crowd automatically see that. That

:44:39. > :44:53.is why they have been giving her a hard time. She is a bit grumpy.

:44:54. > :45:10.Another wayward volley. She has enjoyed a lot of success as doubles

:45:11. > :45:12.player as junior and senior. But her volleys, you would expect to be

:45:13. > :45:35.better. The ball kids have it sussed.

:45:36. > :45:36.Putting the ball is exactly where Wozniacki wants them. She has got

:45:37. > :46:15.them drilled. That was a beautiful shot. Admired

:46:16. > :46:20.by the father of Caroline. Did a good job of staying at the point,

:46:21. > :46:21.Wozniacki. This one on the full stretch, dragging it back with the

:46:22. > :46:29.left hand. Wozniacki scores her first game of

:46:30. > :46:42.the second set. We talked about Caroline Wozniacki

:46:43. > :46:51.being number one in the world back in 2010. She has not won a major. I

:46:52. > :46:55.think that starts to weigh on you. People ask you the same question.

:46:56. > :47:01.Will this be the major, will this be the one you will win? This year's

:47:02. > :47:05.Wimbledon is so open and I think everyone is feeling back. When I

:47:06. > :47:10.look at Pliskova, the best result she has had at Wimbledon is the

:47:11. > :47:14.second round. We only have two former champions in the draw, with

:47:15. > :47:20.venous and Kvitova. That feeling makes everybody a little bit jumpy

:47:21. > :47:26.and uneasy in the locker room. Caroline Wozniacki, I think she has

:47:27. > :47:31.not settled today. She is up a set but I have never seen her complain

:47:32. > :47:36.so much, to the ball kids, the umpire, telling him to do his job,

:47:37. > :47:41.to pay attention. She looks unsettled. Normally more composed on

:47:42. > :47:48.court. She obviously thinks this could be her year. A lot of people

:47:49. > :47:55.feel that! Shrewd observers think it could be Kvitova's opportunity for a

:47:56. > :47:59.third. She has won a grass court tournament in Birmingham. Wozniacki

:48:00. > :48:03.was in the final at Eastbourne, beaten by Pliskova, who could be a

:48:04. > :48:19.favourite. It is wide open, as you say.

:48:20. > :48:23.The forehand has been a profitable area. The eighth winner on that

:48:24. > :49:05.wing. Two good. Great disguise on the

:49:06. > :49:39.forehand side. -- too good. Another ace and another love service

:49:40. > :49:41.game from Babos. Her serve is really firing now. She did not make a

:49:42. > :50:46.single ace in the first set. First ace for Wozniacki, closely

:50:47. > :50:51.followed by a second. Bob a hat-trick here. -- she is on a

:50:52. > :51:25.hat-trick here. A brutal return of serve. 2-D Babos

:51:26. > :51:31.forehand. -- it was 2-D Babos forehand. Absolutely unloaded.

:51:32. > :52:09.Wozniacki will still be confident of holding serve. 40-15.

:52:10. > :52:23.Babos with the break of serve, which she set up early in this second set.

:52:24. > :52:29.Pretty much three quarters full, possibly more, on Centre Court. A

:52:30. > :52:33.lot of play on the outside courts. Court Number Two alongside Court 12,

:52:34. > :52:40.on the left, the newest of the big show courts. Number three, saw the

:52:41. > :52:44.longest match of the tournament so far, four and a half hours last

:52:45. > :52:49.night with Aljaz Bedene coming through against Ivo Karlovic. And

:52:50. > :52:55.Centre Court with the concertina trademark roof. Court Number One

:52:56. > :53:11.will have a similar roof when it is completed and ready to go in two

:53:12. > :53:16.years, 2019. The work is under way. They only have a nine-month window

:53:17. > :53:20.to build with eight giant cranes around the court, which get taken

:53:21. > :53:23.down. They need three months of clear space to prepare for the

:53:24. > :53:26.Championships and clear up afterwards. It is a bit of a rush

:53:27. > :54:22.once the building recommences. Wozniacki is happy to be wearing a

:54:23. > :54:28.visor at this end of the court. It is still in bright sunshine.

:54:29. > :54:36.The difficulty at this time of day is when the ball comes from the sun

:54:37. > :54:40.to the shade and from the shade to the sun. That will last a little bit

:54:41. > :54:59.longer yet. And the lob is wide. Another

:55:00. > :55:07.efficient service game for Timea Babos.

:55:08. > :55:14.Wozniacki unable to do any damage on the Babos service game. New balls

:55:15. > :55:21.being produced by the hard-working ball crew. They have been given a

:55:22. > :55:28.new routine they did not practice during their weeks of training.

:55:29. > :55:35.Tonight Caroline Wozniacki has asked them to roll the ball is along the

:55:36. > :55:46.back of the court. And now she has them positioned in an irregular

:55:47. > :55:50.area. I don't remember ever really seeing this sort of performance

:55:51. > :56:35.going on between the player and the ball crew out here. Very irregular.

:56:36. > :56:53.Too good. It was two flats. Too hard. -- it was too flat. A simple

:56:54. > :56:54.game plan for Babos. Hit everything as hard as you can and hopefully it

:56:55. > :57:20.does not come back. She has decided to challenge. After

:57:21. > :57:22.she looked up at her coach. He is in a position to see if it is in or

:57:23. > :58:29.out. What a point. Extraordinary tennis.

:58:30. > :58:36.A left-handed shot played by Babos in the middle of all the fact. The

:58:37. > :58:40.problem was on the return of serve, Babos hitter backhand when she

:58:41. > :58:44.probably should have hit a forehand and then she had to scurry to the

:58:45. > :58:48.left and that is way she played the left-handed forehand and then she

:58:49. > :58:53.never stopped running after that moment. She is smiling. I think she

:58:54. > :59:01.is pleased with herself after pulling off this bit of magic.

:59:02. > :59:12.Wozniacki's overhead. Babos playback cricket shot and set off in pursuit

:59:13. > :59:18.of this. Which she made. Your point, your game. This is the left-handed

:59:19. > :59:25.shot. Played it with her hand halfway up the racket. Made it

:59:26. > :59:45.count. It is still going. She is laughing about it mid-rally.

:59:46. > :59:54.We have got a seriously grumpy player at one end and a really quite

:59:55. > :00:14.happy one at the other. Wozniacki is still down a break.

:00:15. > :00:23.She is getting all the luck. That was the first first serve she has

:00:24. > :00:26.missed in this second set. And she still comes away with the point,

:00:27. > :00:55.helped by a slice of good fortune. That was Babos' point the whole way.

:00:56. > :01:40.She ran into the ball and left herself. Just butchered the volley.

:01:41. > :01:54.Good strike. The crowd enjoyed that. They want another set. They haven't

:01:55. > :01:56.had as much tennis as expected because of the retirements. The

:01:57. > :02:55.match deserves a final set. It was right underneath the umpire's

:02:56. > :03:08.chair. He didn't overrule. Wozniacki felt she got a bit of the line. But

:03:09. > :03:20.the line judge was correct. So Wozniacki will have two serve this

:03:21. > :03:22.day in this second set. Everything organised with the ball crew be hind

:03:23. > :04:17.her. Quick serving. 106 mph. Just short

:04:18. > :04:29.of her fastest serve which has been 107.

:04:30. > :04:34.Babos will have two serve for the second set, if she is to force the

:04:35. > :04:48.decider. Fast game. Fast match, this. One

:04:49. > :04:53.hour and six minutes and we have completed almost two full set. Babos

:04:54. > :04:59.has played some excellent tennis throughout. The serve has been good.

:05:00. > :05:05.Four aces and no double faults. She has hit most of her first serves,

:05:06. > :05:10.particularly in this second set, the numbers have been solid. The winners

:05:11. > :05:17.have outnumbered the unforced errors from Babos, which is key. 22 to 17.

:05:18. > :05:22.It is all about execution. The game plan is clear. She wants to hit big

:05:23. > :05:26.from both sides and she hits the ball very flat, so she will make

:05:27. > :05:30.some errors. But she figures that is the best chance to win against

:05:31. > :05:38.someone who has just great retrieving skills in Caroline

:05:39. > :05:42.Wozniacki. Rarely a cloud in the sky. The weather has been kind to

:05:43. > :05:43.the first week of Wimbledon. There may be a shower tomorrow but the

:05:44. > :05:55.roof has remained open throughout. Can Timea Babos get this second set

:05:56. > :06:47.finished? Serving for it at 5-4. It is not the site is served to when

:06:48. > :06:51.you have a second serve. She generates so much more pace,

:06:52. > :06:53.Wozniacki of the backhand side. She finds it much more difficult to

:06:54. > :07:08.generate pace on the forehand side. Wozniacki complaining about the

:07:09. > :07:16.like. She is complaining about lots of things the night. This time it

:07:17. > :07:54.was the son in her eyes as she tried to play the lob.

:07:55. > :08:06.Terrific point. 15 strokes in total. The coach is on his feet. Did a

:08:07. > :08:13.great job with this backhand, Babos. That one there. Just an impossible

:08:14. > :08:33.shot for Wozniacki to get that back. Two set points.

:08:34. > :08:43.That was out, wasn't it? No challenge. Babos probably regretting

:08:44. > :08:54.the fact she didn't ask for it to be checked. I think it was probably

:08:55. > :09:05.good. Still with a set point in hand.

:09:06. > :09:16.Wozniacki is getting this one double-checked. Babos and her

:09:17. > :09:19.opponent had to their chairs. All we need is the rubber stamp from

:09:20. > :09:28.Hawk-Eye to confirm it was long. Babos takes the second set. This

:09:29. > :09:39.enthralling contest will be going the distance. One set all on Centre

:09:40. > :09:46.Court. Wozniacki, heading off for a comfort break. Last chance to take a

:09:47. > :09:51.look at the numbers surrounding the second set, which was a terrific

:09:52. > :10:02.watch. Just half a dozen points in that set. Wozniacki didn't have any

:10:03. > :10:06.break points one due to some good serving from Babos. Look at the

:10:07. > :10:17.number from the first serve. 84%, terrific number. And the variation

:10:18. > :10:21.from Wozniacki of her second serve, winning 43% of those points. Has

:10:22. > :10:32.kept the unforced errors to a minimum, Babos. Full credit to Timea

:10:33. > :11:03.Babos. She loses the first set and she stays committed to the cause.

:11:04. > :11:09.SUE BARKER: we have a real match on Centre Court and we will be back

:11:10. > :11:15.with the start of the third set in a moment. Plenty happening on the out

:11:16. > :11:23.caught so as Grigor Dimitrov is going well. He won the first set of

:11:24. > :11:29.the tie-break and leads 5-2. That match is the feature match on the

:11:30. > :11:32.red button. Out on Court Two, and match we were watching earlier and

:11:33. > :11:40.Thomas Berdych has just taken the third set on the tie-break, winning

:11:41. > :11:47.it 7-5. It is Berdych who leads over Jeremy Chardy of France. You can

:11:48. > :11:51.follow that on the BBC Sport website. And Feliciano Lopez, locked

:11:52. > :11:58.in battle with add Rhiannon Mannarino. It is a close one, they

:11:59. > :12:06.have been playing 42 minutes. You can follow that one on the BBC Sport

:12:07. > :12:21.website. We have been talking about Dominic Thiem. Going well against

:12:22. > :12:29.pops a sale. -- proper self. One result, Christine Miller of France

:12:30. > :12:40.is through winning in straight sets over Pauline Parmentier. That was

:12:41. > :12:44.out caught three. All of that happening outside, but on this

:12:45. > :12:50.beautiful evening at Wimbledon, what lovely weather we have had today, we

:12:51. > :12:57.are heading back to Centre Court. COMMENTATOR: ready for the final

:12:58. > :13:03.set. Caroline Wozniacki will serve. An hour and 14 minutes played so

:13:04. > :13:11.far. It has been a brilliant match to watch. Let's hope the intensity

:13:12. > :13:48.levels stay high for the deciding set.

:13:49. > :13:56.Wozniacki started serving first in the second set and that was the game

:13:57. > :13:57.she was broken. She has this final pocket of sunshine to deal with

:13:58. > :14:20.here, making life tricky. She just missed it. She is

:14:21. > :14:22.challenging it. I don't think there will be any joy here for Wozniacki.

:14:23. > :14:31.I think it is wide. Worrying start to the final set. For

:14:32. > :15:08.the number five seed. She needs to make absolutely certain

:15:09. > :15:21.with the second serve. Huge return from Babos. What a start to the

:15:22. > :15:41.final set. The Hungarian's French coach is on his feet again.

:15:42. > :15:54.It is in. Surprised silence from the crowd but it was in an Babos has

:15:55. > :16:05.broken in the opening game of the third and final set. You don't see

:16:06. > :16:11.that happening too often from Caroline Wozniacki. Completely

:16:12. > :16:18.misjudged the return. Maybe she did mis-hit it. Just had enough spin on

:16:19. > :16:25.it to drop quickly and land in. Babos, she is ready for the

:16:26. > :16:30.occasion, isn't she? Not wasting any time on the change of ends. The

:16:31. > :17:14.pressure is on the number five seed, Caroline Wozniacki.

:17:15. > :17:29.110 mph. Right in the corner. Tremendous serve.

:17:30. > :17:40.She is serving beautifully here, full of confidence. 40-0.

:17:41. > :18:00.Opportunity to consolidate the early break of serve.

:18:01. > :18:12.That is Babos' first double fault of the match. Worst times to throw in a

:18:13. > :18:49.double fault. 40-0 up, she might get away with it.

:18:50. > :19:04.Nervous looking people in that Wozniacki connections box. It is

:19:05. > :19:05.never a comfortable place to sit. In any one's connection box, I don't

:19:06. > :19:33.think. You know what, that is just a

:19:34. > :19:36.really, really poor Polly. She just got so nervous, she had the whole

:19:37. > :19:44.court and a little bit more. -- volley. She just completely just

:19:45. > :19:52.what should the volley. From 40-0 to deuce. The double fault back came at

:19:53. > :20:03.the start of the game, could prove costly.

:20:04. > :20:21.Deep breath, tries to compose herself.

:20:22. > :20:30.Really choking under the pressure here, Timea Babos. You can see that

:20:31. > :20:35.tightness on the backhand volley. When you get tight, everything

:20:36. > :20:38.closes down and your feet don't get to the ball. Her arm was stiff.

:20:39. > :21:07.Break point. Another unforced error. A game that

:21:08. > :21:11.started so well at 40-0 up. A double fault and a succession of unforced

:21:12. > :21:15.errors came back to haunt the Hungarian. The backhand volley and

:21:16. > :21:24.then the short ball, those are the kind of points that give you

:21:25. > :21:29.nightmares. Is that a significant momentum switched towards Caroline

:21:30. > :22:13.Wozniacki? Can she move it along from here? 1-1.

:22:14. > :22:24.That might just restore the confidence of Timea Babos, nice

:22:25. > :22:33.little drop shot. Pressure is a funny thing, where was that type of

:22:34. > :22:52.shot in the first game when she needed it?

:22:53. > :23:02.Her timing is out. She has been making mis-hit, after mis-hit. Using

:23:03. > :23:21.more of the frame van string. -- van.

:23:22. > :23:26.From 40-0 up, she is only won one point since then, Babos. 40-0 in the

:23:27. > :24:02.previous game. Good wheels from Wozniacki but

:24:03. > :24:46.covered well by Babos. Wozniacki get it done. Moves ahead.

:24:47. > :24:52.Final set is on serve at the moment. SUE BARKER: what a fightback from

:24:53. > :24:56.Wozniacki. We will be back in just a moment on Centre Court, but we can

:24:57. > :25:01.show you what we can look forward to tomorrow on the big show courts.

:25:02. > :25:07.Johanna Konta, up against Donna Vekic. They met in the final of

:25:08. > :25:15.Nottingham and Donna Vekic won that one. She thinks the pressure is all

:25:16. > :25:18.on Johanna Konta tomorrow. Andy Murray up against Dustin Brown, one

:25:19. > :25:24.of the great showman. He put out Rafael Nadal a few years ago here,

:25:25. > :25:30.so he is a dangerous opponent. And then Rafael Nadal takes on Donald

:25:31. > :25:33.Young of the United States. Over on Court Number One Kei Nishikori takes

:25:34. > :25:46.on Sir Guy Stakhovsky, but we know him from putting out Roger Federer

:25:47. > :25:59.here. Over on Court Number Two, Heather Watson, she is enjoying a

:26:00. > :26:05.return to form. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic, who looked very

:26:06. > :26:13.good in his opening round. Don't count him out of this tournament.

:26:14. > :26:29.Plenty of sunshine around here. Back we go to Centre Court.

:26:30. > :26:39.COMMENTATOR: This corner of sunshine continuing to confound Caroline

:26:40. > :26:40.Wozniacki. Another ten minutes and Centre Court will be completely

:26:41. > :26:57.shaded. Babos is targeting that area, but

:26:58. > :27:02.not accurately. The execution is a little bit of from Babos in these

:27:03. > :27:06.last couple of games. She has to keep it in the back of her mind,

:27:07. > :27:16.even though she had the early break, it is still on serve at this point.

:27:17. > :27:36.Tried to go out of the side exit with the first serve.

:27:37. > :27:43.That was the best clean winner we have seen from Wozniacki for a

:27:44. > :27:47.while. Wozniacki in these last few games has gone more aggressive. I

:27:48. > :27:51.know she didn't have to do much in that game that Babos gifted to her,

:27:52. > :28:10.but looking to be more in the court, Wozniacki.

:28:11. > :28:20.Worrying time now the Babos. Two break points the Wozniacki. The ebb

:28:21. > :28:27.and flow of this match has been extraordinary. Wozniacki, on an

:28:28. > :28:54.upward trajectory here. Having missed a few straightforward

:28:55. > :28:59.volleys, you are never sure whether Babos is going to get this right. On

:29:00. > :29:06.this occasion, all is well. The last straightforward volley, where she

:29:07. > :29:23.missed and she had the whole court...

:29:24. > :29:32.Caroline Wozniacki would normally have had bad back. Normally easy

:29:33. > :30:05.pickings for her on that backhand side.

:30:06. > :30:16.He has not been on his feet for a while. His arms folded. His poker

:30:17. > :30:31.face. He knows his player is in trouble. Break point.

:30:32. > :30:39.That was the worst of the lot, and there have been plenty. That is just

:30:40. > :30:47.pressure, that is plain and simple pressure. She tries to steer the

:30:48. > :30:52.volley. If you gave heard this volley 50 times, she would make it

:30:53. > :31:01.49. She was just too careful. She looked up at her coach. He had his

:31:02. > :31:07.head in his hands. That horrendous mistake from Babos has given

:31:08. > :31:15.Wozniacki a 3-1 lead in the final set will stop the Dane is now

:31:16. > :31:32.preparing to serve for a 4-1 advantage.

:31:33. > :32:54.The crowd are doing their best to help her along, as well.

:32:55. > :33:14.The contrast of fortunes for Wozniacki and her father. She seems

:33:15. > :33:32.to be going from strength to strength.

:33:33. > :34:15.Wozniacki absolutely dominant at present. 4-1 in front in the final

:34:16. > :34:19.set. She has been given the opportunity, Caroline Wozniacki, to

:34:20. > :34:26.find her way back into this match and she has grabbed it with both

:34:27. > :34:32.hands. She lost the opening serve of this third set. Babos has 40-0.

:34:33. > :34:38.There was a double fault, a bad volley. A bad shot on the forehand

:34:39. > :34:44.and a short ball she missed and she has not been able to shake off that

:34:45. > :34:50.game, Babos. Good wheels from Wozniacki to cover this and whippet

:34:51. > :34:56.cross-court. She has not been able to shake off the bat shots and the

:34:57. > :35:01.unforced errors are coming thick and fast from Babos. Wozniacki is a

:35:02. > :35:14.tough competitor. You cannot give her too many opportunities.

:35:15. > :35:28.Generous applause for Timea Babos. Her coach trying his best to do what

:35:29. > :35:48.he can. But limited input from the coach. New balls.

:35:49. > :36:01.Terrific shot, Wozniacki. It drew applause from Timea Babos, that

:36:02. > :36:05.shot. Look how much court she has to cover. Not only does she get it

:36:06. > :36:11.back, she hits the winner, the flick of the wrist at the last minute. Too

:36:12. > :37:09.good. Not an easy volley, but one that she

:37:10. > :37:13.would expect to make. There are no free points for Babos, just

:37:14. > :37:14.excellent court coverage from Wozniacki, good anticipation, and

:37:15. > :37:39.making Babos play at everything. Only her second double fault. But it

:37:40. > :37:45.gives Caroline Wozniacki two break points. If she takes one of them,

:37:46. > :38:02.she will serve for the match. And the belief is gone for Babos.

:38:03. > :38:12.Her mind is in the locker room. And it looks as if it will not be long

:38:13. > :38:19.until her body is there, too. One hour and 40 minutes. All sorts of

:38:20. > :38:26.things have happened this evening. It has been thoroughly entertaining.

:38:27. > :38:28.Caroline Wozniacki one game away from finishing it off. Serving for

:38:29. > :39:22.the match. Well, she is on a losing streak,

:39:23. > :39:27.Timea Babos. She has been struggling to get out of the first round of all

:39:28. > :39:31.tournament she has played in since April. This one in motion leak it

:39:32. > :39:40.may be hard to get over, having been in such a commanding position. --

:39:41. > :40:18.this one emotionally may be hard to get over.

:40:19. > :40:39.An ace from Wozniacki, her third. She now has two match points.

:40:40. > :40:48.Back aces. To wrap up this first-round match for Caroline

:40:49. > :40:56.Wozniacki. Really good entertainment on Centre Court. Wozniacki hat to

:40:57. > :41:01.fight back and her concentration seemed to waver in the second set,

:41:02. > :41:08.but she has bounced back to take the bird. Quickly and comfortably, 6-1.

:41:09. > :41:13.And take her place in the second round at Wimbledon. I feel a certain

:41:14. > :41:21.sympathy for Timea Babos, however, who seemed to be in a good place.

:41:22. > :41:25.You look back on matches and sometimes you may not agree on the

:41:26. > :41:32.turning point, but certainly the turning point in this match was the

:41:33. > :41:39.second game of the third set, where Babos had just broken, she had 40-0,

:41:40. > :41:44.there was a double fault and bad volley and an awkward looking

:41:45. > :41:51.forehand shot and from that moment, she was unable to recover. Having

:41:52. > :41:57.said that, Caroline Wozniacki, she has not been number one in the world

:41:58. > :42:02.and had 25 titles for nothing. She is tough to beat and was given an

:42:03. > :42:07.opportunity to find her way back in the match and she grabbed it with

:42:08. > :42:13.both hands and she ran. A long line of autograph hunters of all ages.

:42:14. > :42:20.With balls and programmes and tickets to sign.

:42:21. > :42:42.That was a good bonus match for the Centre Court crowd. It was a fixture

:42:43. > :42:50.they were not expecting. It was added to the schedule following

:42:51. > :42:54.withdrawals in the two Myanmar -- men's matches earlier and it was

:42:55. > :42:59.worth waiting for with Caroline Wozniacki taking the victory.

:43:00. > :43:08.She is talking now to Phil Jones. Well done on getting through. There

:43:09. > :43:13.seemed to be a turning point at the start of the third set, second game.

:43:14. > :43:20.How did you reverse the momentum she built? I am not sure, I kept

:43:21. > :43:27.fighting for every point. I was down a break early in both sets and she

:43:28. > :43:31.had 40-0 on her serve and somehow I managed to pull it out and got over

:43:32. > :43:36.to the easier side to play on with more shade and I started hitting the

:43:37. > :43:43.ball better and more precisely. You are carrying something here from

:43:44. > :43:48.your fine performance at Eastbourne. Did you feel in the same rich vein

:43:49. > :43:53.of form today? I feel like I am in good shape at the first round is

:43:54. > :43:57.always tricky and she is a great player, she serves big and I knew I

:43:58. > :44:02.had to be ready from the first ball and she gave me a lot of

:44:03. > :44:06.competition. When you are in a floating match, you do not know the

:44:07. > :44:11.court you will play on and you are put on Centre Court. I love playing

:44:12. > :44:15.on Centre Court, it is a special feeling to be out there and I love

:44:16. > :44:21.being out there and it is definitely what we train for, to be out there.

:44:22. > :44:26.In terms of what you feel you can do in the tournament, 11 years you with

:44:27. > :44:36.junior champion, I know you love the place, you must feel good about it?

:44:37. > :44:40.Yes, I love playing on grass and I love Wimbledon. I take it one match

:44:41. > :44:45.at a time. Today was tough and I am happy to be through and hopefully I

:44:46. > :44:50.can get good recovery. Well done. SUE BARKER: Caroline will be glad to

:44:51. > :44:55.get that under her belt. A difficult opponent. Her strength is she is a

:44:56. > :45:00.tough competitor and she showed that in the final set, reeling off six

:45:01. > :45:08.games in a wrote in the final set. She will be back for round two. We

:45:09. > :45:14.will drop in on Court Number Two, Tomas Berdych against Jeremy Chardy.

:45:15. > :45:29.Berdych serving for the match. 5-4 he leaves in the fourth set.

:45:30. > :45:37.COMMENTATOR: Thomas Berdych with his 12th ace of the match. Closing in on

:45:38. > :45:38.the finishing line. In this first-round encounter we have seen

:45:39. > :46:04.some tennis of the highest quality. Berdych has been under the cosh

:46:05. > :46:10.throughout with five break point opportunities, the French man, and

:46:11. > :46:17.he has only managed to convert one of them. That is a synopsis of what

:46:18. > :46:22.has been going on here. But Berdych has remained watertight throughout,

:46:23. > :46:27.just incredibly solid. In stark contrast, Tomas Berdych has created

:46:28. > :46:44.two break point opportunities but he has converted both of them.

:46:45. > :46:48.Terrific hitting from beyond the baseline. Bringing up three match

:46:49. > :46:58.points. It has been a high-level match with

:46:59. > :47:19.more winners than on forced errors throughout the match.

:47:20. > :47:28.Tomas Berdych and Jeremy Chardy receiving a standing ovation from

:47:29. > :47:34.the capacity crowd. Tomas Berdych, the number in Leven seed progresses

:47:35. > :47:44.to the second round with a four set victory over Jeremy Chardy. 6-3,

:47:45. > :47:49.3-6, 7-6, 6-4. It took him two hours and 22 minutes and he extends his

:47:50. > :47:54.perfect run in a five match head-to-head rivalry over Jeremy

:47:55. > :47:59.Chardy. The French man played sublime tennis in sets two and

:48:00. > :48:06.three. A wave of concentration in set four. Tomas Berdych progresses

:48:07. > :48:12.to round two. SUE BARKER: He is such a big hitter,

:48:13. > :48:20.a former finalist. Never write him off. There has been some tough

:48:21. > :48:24.first-round matches. Berdych against Chardy, such an experienced player.

:48:25. > :48:29.I wanted to show you the end of that one. Another match point to bring

:48:30. > :48:38.you. Bacsinszky, the number 19 seed, she has gone through against the

:48:39. > :48:50.Olympic gold men -- gold medallist Monica Puig.

:48:51. > :49:01.Now we will head to court 16 where the Queen's champion Feliciano Lopez

:49:02. > :49:06.is playing. It has been that sort of day. We have had one injury after

:49:07. > :49:11.another and this is Lopez with the trainer. He has taken painkillers

:49:12. > :49:22.and had treatment for a foot injury. He won the opening set but he

:49:23. > :49:28.dropped the second set 6-1. Two lefty players with big serves. Will

:49:29. > :49:38.he be able to continue? We will see if the treatment will help. The

:49:39. > :49:43.commentators, Jamie Baker and Dan Lobb.

:49:44. > :49:49.COMMENTATOR: The medical time-out is coming to an end. The physio is

:49:50. > :49:54.still chatting to Feliciano Lopez. There was a lot of manipulation on

:49:55. > :50:04.the left foot. Impossible to say where or what the injury is. There

:50:05. > :50:08.was a slight slip from Lopez in the second game of the match, but that

:50:09. > :50:12.is the only thing we have seen that might have led to this. He got

:50:13. > :50:22.through a tough first set in 50 minutes. Took it 7-5. Early in the

:50:23. > :50:26.second set, he started to show signs of discomfort. And some kind of

:50:27. > :50:43.ailment. That second set went quickly, 26 minutes.

:50:44. > :50:58.Just long. There is no Hawk-Eye on Court number 16.

:50:59. > :51:48.Mannarino checked that the ball was long.

:51:49. > :51:56.Lopez showing great defence and then having an opportunity to win the

:51:57. > :52:00.point. Mannarino perhaps a little too negative when he had the chance

:52:01. > :52:03.to finish things off. Trying to do the right things though, Jamie.

:52:04. > :52:20.Mannarino wanting to get Lopez on the move.

:52:21. > :52:30.There is that tricky serve we have seen so often in the match. The

:52:31. > :52:32.first time we have seen Lopez attack it. Probably the right thing to do,

:52:33. > :53:01.but just missing on that occasion. He is looking comfortable in this

:53:02. > :53:11.rally. He is a tricky player, Mannarino. He has so many different

:53:12. > :53:22.shots at his disposal. And he likes a slice serve. That is never coming

:53:23. > :53:33.back. Such an acute angle. Ace number six for the French man. 29

:53:34. > :53:43.years of age. He made the final of a brand-new grass court event in the

:53:44. > :53:49.build-up to Wimbledon. In Turkey. He lost to a Japanese player in the

:53:50. > :53:59.final. Three very impressive wins against Coric, Verdasco and Seppi.

:54:00. > :54:07.So he is in pretty good form on this surface.

:54:08. > :54:20.The reaction volley from a man who is also in pretty good nick. The

:54:21. > :54:22.crowd enjoyed that. It was a good pick-up from Lopez but Mannarino did

:54:23. > :55:04.the hard work. Every inch of the court being used.

:55:05. > :55:05.This time, Lopez unable to deal with some more wicked ground strokes from

:55:06. > :55:18.Mannarino. He is economical with his movement.

:55:19. > :55:19.He reads the game well. He is seeing the ball like a football at the

:55:20. > :55:50.moment. That was one of those slightly laxer

:55:51. > :55:59.days local -- lackadaisical forehands.

:56:00. > :56:05.Has been struggling with the sun, but it looks as if it is finally out

:56:06. > :56:26.of his way. It sounds like another drop that

:56:27. > :56:47.one, in the crowd. The crowd have dropped a few off the

:56:48. > :57:01.racket of Lopez. Maybe they can blame the sun.

:57:02. > :57:13.A beautiful angle on the forehand side from Mannarino. It is that

:57:14. > :57:19.wristy forehand that allows him to play the shots. Look at how low the

:57:20. > :57:21.swing is. There is not a lot that can go wrong with that. And he has

:57:22. > :57:35.another break point. Lopez is not at all happy with that

:57:36. > :57:37.baseline call. Mannarino's return was called in. There is no Hawk-Eye.

:57:38. > :57:58.He cannot challenge. Well, it has gone. He has lost his

:57:59. > :58:05.serve again. He has too regrouped. -- regroup. That is the fourth break

:58:06. > :58:23.of serve that Lopez has suffered. Was he aware at that point that

:58:24. > :58:39.there was no challenge? It did not look like it. Feliciano Lopez is the

:58:40. > :58:40.Queen's champion. He lost in the final of Stuttgart. The perfect

:58:41. > :59:07.build-up to this tournament. It looks like he will try to change

:59:08. > :59:13.things up as best he can to get out of this pickle, but he is not moving

:59:14. > :00:06.well. You saw him moving gingerly after playing the drop shot.

:00:07. > :00:14.Really nice touch from Lopez again but he is moving gingerly. It looks

:00:15. > :00:17.like he is going to have to find a way of doing as little running as

:00:18. > :00:28.possible. Very tricky against Mannarino.

:00:29. > :00:47.The crowd really enjoying some of these exchanges. It was a good

:00:48. > :00:50.pick-up. Equally good from Mannarino. Look at that on the

:00:51. > :01:05.half-volley. Superb hand skills. That is a disappointing forehand

:01:06. > :01:11.this time from Lopez. Mannarino has done a great job of hanging in there

:01:12. > :01:48.when it has got tight on his own service games.

:01:49. > :02:03.Such clever play from Mannarino. Just moving the ailing Lopez around.

:02:04. > :02:09.Asking all the right questions and the number 19 seed is in a spot of

:02:10. > :02:12.bother out here on Court 16. Mannarino, 3-0 up with a break in

:02:13. > :02:29.the third. Well, if anybody has the game to

:02:30. > :02:37.finish things off quicker than they would like, go for the lines, though

:02:38. > :02:41.for those big shots -- go for those big shots, I guess Lopez would be

:02:42. > :02:45.fairly high on the list. He has got to be served for it, no doubt about

:02:46. > :02:50.that but he would rather not pull the trigger early in the rally. You

:02:51. > :02:55.can see he's got equally a similar amount of graft on his forehand. He

:02:56. > :02:59.would rather be slicing and dicing and working his way into the net may

:03:00. > :03:04.be off the fifth or sixth shot as opposed to the first or second. So

:03:05. > :03:08.if this foot issue or wherever it is, and it certainly looks like it

:03:09. > :03:11.is not going away during this match, he is going to have to alter his

:03:12. > :03:14.game style somehow because at the moment, Mannarino is just making him

:03:15. > :03:21.move far too much. He is too comfortable. The other problem Lopez

:03:22. > :03:25.has is the fact Mannarino just read the game so well. He has the ability

:03:26. > :03:38.to stay one step ahead. So whatever Feliciano Lopez does, it

:03:39. > :03:40.has got to be good to get past this man, who is in a very strong

:03:41. > :04:13.position. His body seems to be letting him

:04:14. > :05:58.down. Just trying to think of positives,

:05:59. > :06:03.Jamie, for Lopez. It is the left foot that is the problem. Because he

:06:04. > :06:10.is a lefty, it is his right leg that is bearing most of the weight on the

:06:11. > :06:13.serve. That hasn't dropped off that much as he flashes a forehand winner

:06:14. > :06:16.and that is what we are talking about, he has the ability to hit

:06:17. > :06:26.those winners from all over the court. So at least he still has his

:06:27. > :06:28.serve. OK, it might not be 100% but a Lopez serve at 80% is still pretty

:06:29. > :06:47.good. APPLAUSE

:06:48. > :06:56.And he still has his sliced backhand and sublime net play.

:06:57. > :06:59.Lopez on the scoreboard in the third set, but he has got to get past this

:07:00. > :07:12.Mannarino serve. One option he has not looked at yet

:07:13. > :07:17.is serve-volley. I don't know how much of a problem that initial two

:07:18. > :07:19.or three steps are but I think his bigger problem, as you say, is going

:07:20. > :07:41.to be on the return games. Well, you bet your bottom dollar

:07:42. > :07:42.that Feliciano Lopez is trying to figure out how he's going to get

:07:43. > :07:52.through this successfully. Brilliant. APPLAUSE

:07:53. > :08:11.Absolutely brilliant. He read that so well. He was on his

:08:12. > :08:15.way, crosscourt, covering the passing shot. One of the best four

:08:16. > :09:10.years -- one of the best volleyers. I would give up on that serve, you

:09:11. > :09:17.know. How do you go about returning serve like that, that angle is so

:09:18. > :09:33.acute, so much spin, it stays low. Oh, it's horrible!

:09:34. > :09:39.Just thinking also on that backhand slice, he really does have two plant

:09:40. > :09:47.the left foot down and maybe that will have an impact. It is such an

:09:48. > :09:57.important shop for him. -- important shot.

:09:58. > :10:08.Mannarino still a break-up and if he keeps on serving like that, then the

:10:09. > :10:26.third set is his. Marc Lopez, there are, with the

:10:27. > :10:29.sunglasses on the top of his head. Feliciano Lopez's doubles partner

:10:30. > :10:40.but no relation, one of the best doubles partnerships in the world,

:10:41. > :10:50.and to his left is Feliciano Lopez's coach, Jose. Nothing they can do, of

:10:51. > :10:56.course. But it is... Very much a team game for these individual

:10:57. > :11:03.players, isn't it? They will be feeling frustrated, worried, as

:11:04. > :11:07.anybody else. Yeah, and having made the decision, you know, he's in the

:11:08. > :11:12.grass court form of his life, coming in from Stuttgart and winning at

:11:13. > :11:16.Queen's, the highs of that and as a team, making the decision not to

:11:17. > :11:22.play Eastbourne to minimise the risk something this happening, it does

:11:23. > :11:26.seem like he has had a real stroke of bad luck somewhere at the start

:11:27. > :11:30.of this match. It just looked so innocuous, if it was indeed that.

:11:31. > :11:36.This is not something which has broken down over the course of the

:11:37. > :11:41.last three or four weeks when he has been playing a lot of matches. So

:11:42. > :11:46.therefore, it is not about conditioning. It is just bad luck. I

:11:47. > :11:49.think something has been picked up. As you say, probably early on in

:11:50. > :11:56.this match. He is still there, though. Obviously, it is one of

:11:57. > :12:06.those days where there is something in the air. We have had our fair

:12:07. > :12:09.share of retirements. O! How is your timing, Mr Mannarino? Yeah, pretty

:12:10. > :12:23.decent. You could hear that Rand and sheer

:12:24. > :13:03.-- random cheer putting Lopez off. They do say, though where the

:13:04. > :13:07.wounded animal. It can be difficult, carded, to play against a player who

:13:08. > :13:18.is obviously struggling? Mannarino so far is doing a fantastic job.

:13:19. > :13:27.I was just about to mention that. Often, it is not that easy but

:13:28. > :13:29.Mannarino has missed the court a couple of times in the last 45

:13:30. > :13:37.minutes. He has dealt with it tremendously.

:13:38. > :13:50.You can see Feliciano Lopez going for broke on the forehand. But it is

:13:51. > :13:53.a double break, now, to Mannarino, ranked 51 in the world. He has been

:13:54. > :14:04.as high as number 27. I think he's going to spend the next

:14:05. > :14:11.game thinking about whether he can even continue. It is not looking

:14:12. > :14:16.good. Well, we have seen one set of treatment. Just waiting for the new

:14:17. > :14:23.balls to come out. The doctor administered what we assumed were

:14:24. > :14:29.painkillers. Maybe he will call for the trainer again. You just hope

:14:30. > :16:03.that he isn't forced to retire. I have to say, this is difficult to

:16:04. > :16:09.watch having seen what he produced it Queen's a few weeks ago. It isn't

:16:10. > :16:11.nice to see someone who clearly is unable to get anywhere near where

:16:12. > :16:33.they want to be. It is not as if he can't move at

:16:34. > :16:37.all. You know, he's definitely hampered. He's not able to in the

:16:38. > :16:40.way he wants but it looks to me as though he's still trying to figure

:16:41. > :16:45.out a way to get through this as best he can with the pain that he

:16:46. > :16:49.in. But for now, it is a third... A set point for the third set, I

:16:50. > :17:09.should say and finished with an ace. SUE BARKER: It is not looking good

:17:10. > :17:14.for Feliciano Lopez but looking good for Mannarino, winning the last two

:17:15. > :17:17.sets 6-1, 6-1 and a foot is travelling Lopez so we will leave

:17:18. > :17:21.this match to go elsewhere but we will keep you up-to-date with the

:17:22. > :17:24.progress if Feliciano Lopez gets back into the match. We will keep

:17:25. > :17:29.you up-to-date with this one and it is on the red button. Let's take a

:17:30. > :17:34.look at a few results which finished late this evening and first up,

:17:35. > :17:37.Grigor Dimitrov, the semifinalist three years ago, winning in straight

:17:38. > :17:43.sets over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina. Dimitrov, who had such a

:17:44. > :17:46.great start to the year, winning the tournament in Brisbane and getting

:17:47. > :17:50.to the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing to Nadal in five sets.

:17:51. > :17:54.He has had a good year and had a good run at Queen's and here through

:17:55. > :18:03.to the second round in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. Dominic Thiem

:18:04. > :18:07.is also in straight sets, the 23-year-old defeating Vasek Pospisil

:18:08. > :18:10.of Canada, who had a very oppressive season on the clay court and now he

:18:11. > :18:16.has started well on the grass, one of the up-and-coming players from

:18:17. > :18:18.Austria, seeded eighth at the Championships, through to face

:18:19. > :18:24.Gilles Simon of France in the next round. Everyone enjoying that out on

:18:25. > :18:30.Court Number One today. And big serving John Isner at match point

:18:31. > :18:35.against American Taylor Fritz, two Americans battling it out on the 4th

:18:36. > :18:38.of July and John Isner won it in straight sets. Not a long match this

:18:39. > :18:45.time, famous for that marathon with Nicolas Mahut but through in

:18:46. > :18:53.straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3, so the 23rd seeded through. -- seed is

:18:54. > :18:58.through. Everybody still milling around here at Wimbledon. Many

:18:59. > :19:01.making their way home. Still very busy on the Hill, enjoying tennis

:19:02. > :19:06.and more tennis is being played, only a few courts in action now but

:19:07. > :19:13.on Court Number Two, we are going to head out to see is that Lana

:19:14. > :19:17.Kuznetsova -- Svetlana Kuznetsova, the three-time quarterfinalist, and

:19:18. > :19:21.winner of the French Open in 2009, taking on a qualifier, and we know

:19:22. > :19:30.how dangerous they can be, 22-year-old Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.

:19:31. > :19:33.Kuznetsova is the seed, number seven at this year's championship so we

:19:34. > :19:34.are going to drop in on this one with Annabel Croft and James

:19:35. > :19:49.Burridge. JAMES BURRIDGE: a really exciting

:19:50. > :19:56.prospect, Ons Jabeur, ranked just outside the top 100 but with a

:19:57. > :20:03.really crafty tennis game. Last taking an top players. As already

:20:04. > :20:09.proven her work this season. And with shots like that, you can

:20:10. > :20:14.understand why. Beat Cibulkova at Roland Garros a month or so ago,

:20:15. > :20:20.making her way to the third round. Annabel, it's going to be

:20:21. > :20:23.interesting. ANNABEL CROFT: It's going to be fabulous, and in the

:20:24. > :20:31.first few games already we have seen so much creative flair from Ons

:20:32. > :20:35.Jabeur. She has got lovely, silky hand skills. We have seen some drop

:20:36. > :20:40.shots, some slices, she can really flatten the ball and be aggressive.

:20:41. > :20:51.She will give Kuznetsova plenty to think about out here.

:20:52. > :20:59.Came through qualifying without losing a set. Won nine of her last

:21:00. > :21:19.12 matches. Qualifiers can be so dangerous.

:21:20. > :21:28.O, not by much! We have seen at a couple of times where she has

:21:29. > :21:32.approached into the forehand corner, Kuznetsova, with the sliced backhand

:21:33. > :21:36.and both times, she has come out winning the point. She is really

:21:37. > :21:42.taking her game to the Grand Slam champion.

:21:43. > :21:57.Lovely point. APPLAUSE You can just see the hands and the

:21:58. > :22:00.finesse of both players come here. That broadcasts from the crowd

:22:01. > :22:03.because she's got the kind of game with the firepower and creative

:22:04. > :22:18.flair. She is an inventive tennis player.

:22:19. > :23:00.O, she just missed! Tennis players tend to prefer to go side to side

:23:01. > :23:03.across the baseline and what Ons Jabeur has been doing is drawing is

:23:04. > :23:10.that Lana Kuznetsova up, back and across and changing directions. She

:23:11. > :23:14.has put her in all sorts of uncomfortable places. First break

:23:15. > :23:16.point to defend. Decent first serve and look at the frustration on

:23:17. > :23:40.Kuznetsova's face. Not a huge serve, is it? It is kind

:23:41. > :23:45.of a very loose, languid style, kind of effortless. No tension in her

:23:46. > :24:02.game. She had almost too much time, then,

:24:03. > :24:14.she was lining it up before the ball was at her.

:24:15. > :24:18.Kuznetsova has definitely struggled on the return of serve, given away

:24:19. > :24:24.quite a few unforced errors off the return already. It is not the pace

:24:25. > :24:29.that is beating her. It is almost having to create the pace.

:24:30. > :24:39.Oh, dear. She got that all wrong. Both these players, I think, just

:24:40. > :25:10.struggling to find a rhythm. Oh, that is just ludicrous! What

:25:11. > :25:17.fabulous touch from Ons Jabeur. So carefree, it is a joy to watch.

:25:18. > :25:22.Well, what a cheeky drop shot that was! I don't think that Lana saw

:25:23. > :25:23.that coming. Again, it was going backwards and she dropped in the

:25:24. > :25:33.short run again. That is the shot she has been

:25:34. > :25:42.looking for. The ground stroke down the line. Well, she's pretty

:25:43. > :25:45.difficult to read because she had thrown in all sorts of different

:25:46. > :25:48.patterns of play already in the first six games so she is certainly

:25:49. > :26:12.Svetlana plenty to think about and no rhythm.

:26:13. > :26:26.Lovely finish from Kuznetsova. Found her target. Carlos Martinez, there,

:26:27. > :26:29.Svetlana Kuznetsova's coach. You can see by that return of serve, that

:26:30. > :26:36.backhand slice, it just sat there rather invitingly. What she really

:26:37. > :26:39.wanted with that slice was the ball to really travel like a spear

:26:40. > :26:42.through the court but if you don't quite get hold of it, it just floats

:26:43. > :26:51.and sits there and gives Svetlana too much time on the ball. UMPIRE:

:26:52. > :26:52.Miss Jabeur challenging the call on the right-hand service line. The

:26:53. > :27:02.ball was called in. SLOW CLAPPING Oh, dear. Second serve. Worth a

:27:03. > :27:48.challenge! Way out! Good, solid service came from the

:27:49. > :27:54.number seven seed. -- service game. So Annabel, why has it been ten

:27:55. > :27:58.years since she has reached the quarterfinal here? I think with the

:27:59. > :28:01.game that Svetlana has, I think it is much more suited to hard courts

:28:02. > :28:05.and of course the clay courts. She comes out the back of the ball with

:28:06. > :28:07.a bit more spin on the forehand and even though she tries to look for

:28:08. > :28:10.the forehand and tries to be aggressive and we have seen already

:28:11. > :28:14.in this match, she can flatten it out on the backhand side, I think

:28:15. > :28:19.that, yeah, it just doesn't suit her. Her game is so much more

:28:20. > :28:23.effective on the other surfaces. I think she has a really great

:28:24. > :28:26.kick-serve but you know, the kick-serve on the grass court can

:28:27. > :28:30.sit up high and with the girls with the double handed backhand and the

:28:31. > :28:35.way the return of serve has become so key in the modern game, you know,

:28:36. > :28:38.players really like to step in and stamped on it, I think the

:28:39. > :28:43.kick-serve has not done as much damage on the grass as on other

:28:44. > :28:48.surfaces. Having said that, she has been such an effective doubles

:28:49. > :28:51.player in her career, winning many titles, 16 doubles titles and two

:28:52. > :28:56.Grand Slam doubles as well. She has a lot of hand skills. We know she

:28:57. > :29:01.can play at the net. You feel she should do better on the grass court.

:29:02. > :29:11.Ons Jabeur serving with new balls at 3-4.

:29:12. > :29:20.That was her best serve. She really had to target Kuznetsova there --

:29:21. > :29:34.target it, Kuznetsova, came at her at 71 mph, short and kicked up.

:29:35. > :29:49.Well, that would have felt good because she has missed a lot of

:29:50. > :29:53.backhand off the return of serve but here, she gets the footwork right,

:29:54. > :29:55.hips and shoulders round and then really launches into that, great

:29:56. > :30:01.weight transference through the ball.

:30:02. > :30:05.UMPIRE: Miss Kuznetsova is challenging the call on the right

:30:06. > :30:24.service line. The ball was called in. SLOW CLAPPING

:30:25. > :30:33.I think the line judge has only got one challenge left, hasn't she?

:30:34. > :30:36.UMPIRE: Correction, the ball was good. Miss Kuznetsova is challenging

:30:37. > :31:17.the call, the ball was called in. She got there in time, but didn't do

:31:18. > :31:41.enough with it. These groundstrokes have got real

:31:42. > :32:07.venom in them, and here's a chance for the number seven seed, Redpoint.

:32:08. > :32:15.That was strange. Kuznetsova thought the shot a copy before that looked

:32:16. > :32:19.well long, so in the end, she got what she wanted. I thought it was

:32:20. > :32:25.long myself, she almost indicated she was challenging but then changed

:32:26. > :32:29.her mind. I'm surprised the umpire did not stop play there. Ons Jabeur

:32:30. > :33:19.had a case to say, I was distracted. She's almost trying to trade with

:33:20. > :33:20.Kuznetsova. She's not winning the toe-to-toe battles from the

:33:21. > :34:23.baseline. It's not for the want of trying.

:34:24. > :34:28.It's the unforced errors of Ons Jabeur which are costing her dearly

:34:29. > :34:40.here, and Svetlana Kuznetsova has two set points.

:34:41. > :34:49.UMPIRE: Game and first set, Miss Kuznetsova.

:34:50. > :34:53.JAMES BURRIDGE: Never in doubt. After an opening 20 minutes or so

:34:54. > :34:57.where we thought this could go all the way to a tie-break, the last

:34:58. > :35:01.three or four games, Annabel, Ons Jabeur has really fallen off in

:35:02. > :35:09.terms of the percentages and unforced errors. Yes, she changed

:35:10. > :35:13.the pattern of play. At the start of the match, she was throwing in all

:35:14. > :35:18.sorts of different mixes of spin and pace and flattening it out as well,

:35:19. > :35:22.everything she was doing was unsettling the rhythm of Svetlana

:35:23. > :35:26.Kuznetsova. But it developed a different pattern towards the back

:35:27. > :35:31.end of the set, they started having more extended rallies from the back

:35:32. > :35:36.of the court, and Svetlana, way more impressive in that department. You

:35:37. > :35:42.can see the very high first serve percentage from Kuznetsova. Jabeur

:35:43. > :36:00.at 52%, will want to get that up. That stat on second serve points won

:36:01. > :36:09.is not a good one for Kuznetsova, she will want to get that up if she

:36:10. > :36:14.progresses. Beautiful view over Wimbledon part, the lake and golf

:36:15. > :36:20.course, absolutely stunning. This is one of my favourite quotes, number

:36:21. > :36:26.two court, it's got a great atmosphere, really beautiful bowl

:36:27. > :36:40.effect, nice place to come to watch tennis in the evening.

:36:41. > :37:12.Still a few people taking their seats.

:37:13. > :37:20.This is what happens in grass court tennis, it is more exaggerated, if

:37:21. > :37:26.you don't get behind the ball, with your body weight, it can be really

:37:27. > :37:32.tricky. You have to have very light extra steps and your feet. Those

:37:33. > :37:55.skills are very, very important on grass.

:37:56. > :38:06.And again, the look on her face says it see - huge frustration for Ons

:38:07. > :38:11.Jabeur. Yes. She looked very relaxed at the start of the match, but all

:38:12. > :38:14.of a sudden, the body language is shifting, she am starting to show

:38:15. > :38:41.her frustration, and Svetlana will be picking up on that.

:38:42. > :38:52.That's more like it. She got her body weight behind that shot.

:38:53. > :38:57.Svetlana will be disappointed she did not do more with that return of

:38:58. > :39:19.serve. It sat there, waiting to be attacked.

:39:20. > :39:26.Ons Jabeur need to settle. There is a danger of this match running away

:39:27. > :39:31.from her. So important to get that first game under your belt, out the

:39:32. > :39:35.message that you're not ready to roll over just yet. You're going to

:39:36. > :39:40.make your opponent work for every single point. Yes, she was just

:39:41. > :39:44.starting to look a little bit dejected. That should lift her

:39:45. > :40:43.spirits up it. Sometimes she doesn't just get

:40:44. > :41:00.balanced on that backhand, she pulls away from it.

:41:01. > :41:58.Kelly Thompson from Great Britain in the chair this evening.

:41:59. > :42:11.Nicely done. She had to watch that ball onto the strings like a hawk.

:42:12. > :42:14.So easy for those shots to go wrong. Well, she really took charge right

:42:15. > :42:22.from the word go in that last rally. Great return of serve, and seizing

:42:23. > :42:25.the opportunity to move forward and cut off the backhand volley angle

:42:26. > :43:03.there. Wow! That's a really nasty fall. Oh,

:43:04. > :43:11.dear! That didn't look good. Kelly Thompson straightaway off the chair.

:43:12. > :43:28.Fortunately, she can get back up, but this was a really nasty tumble.

:43:29. > :44:09.She may not know at the moment quite what she's done. That was nasty.

:44:10. > :44:19.She was running straight back to the area where she had just fallen. On

:44:20. > :44:35.stupor is not called for a trainer or a medical time-out.

:44:36. > :44:44.I'm amazed she hasn't called for the trainer, just even to get checked

:44:45. > :44:51.out, get you to do a few moves, just to see if anything might be damaged.

:44:52. > :44:57.It's more the fact, does she trust the ground beneath her, does she

:44:58. > :45:16.trust her footwork? That can mess with your mind.

:45:17. > :45:26.Indicating there that she was reaching for that ball.

:45:27. > :45:38.Chances for good Nat Sciver -- chances for Kuznetsova for an early

:45:39. > :45:48.break. Oh, that is just delicious! And the crowd loving it, too. It is

:45:49. > :45:55.like waving a wand, isn't it? Look at that, absolutely beautiful. You

:45:56. > :46:06.can almost see the ball holding on the strings. Follows it up with an

:46:07. > :46:26.ace down the T, her third in the match, at a critical time. Two break

:46:27. > :46:40.That says a lot about her self-belief. It was not the shot she

:46:41. > :46:44.intended. It's such a clever slice, it's not your routine slice, she's

:46:45. > :46:52.actually coming on the inside of the ball and fading it. So that when it

:46:53. > :47:11.bounces, it spins away from the opponent, makes it very awkward.

:47:12. > :47:28.About one WAS out, after an incredible backhand slice. She's got

:47:29. > :47:43.quite a box of tricks, hasn't she?! Bringing them all out tonight!

:47:44. > :47:56.Brilliant! Gutsy tennis from Ons Jabeur. Few would be trying this at

:47:57. > :47:58.break point down. Really accelerating through it, and she's

:47:59. > :48:29.got the crowd behind her. How many times do we see in the

:48:30. > :48:31.early stages of the second set, really crucial moments. A chance for

:48:32. > :48:55.2-1. We haven't seen too much of that.

:48:56. > :49:23.That was a bit of a rash error there.

:49:24. > :49:31.She knows she has to do more with that second serve. Kuznetsova is

:49:32. > :49:40.just waiting, ready to pounce. Fifth break point.

:49:41. > :49:55.This time, she gets it. And she knows how crucial it could be in the

:49:56. > :49:59.overall outcome of this match. SUE BARKER: What delightful tennis

:50:00. > :50:06.we are watching, and good that that nasty fall has not affected Haas too

:50:07. > :50:13.much. Just to update you on the Feliciano Lopez match, I'm afraid it

:50:14. > :50:19.is a rather sad end, because here at 3-3, you can see Mannarino has two

:50:20. > :50:24.break points, he breaks, and at this point, Feliciano Lopez up to the net

:50:25. > :50:28.and says, I can't carry on. He knows he can't come back and win it in

:50:29. > :50:35.five sets, that foot injury is just too much. Lopez, champion at

:50:36. > :50:39.Queen's, so much expected of him here, another one who has to retire

:50:40. > :50:43.because of an injury. In fact he's the seventh man in the main draw in

:50:44. > :50:52.this first round to retire because of injuries. And we have had two

:50:53. > :50:56.retirements on Centre Court today. So, very disappointing, so much

:50:57. > :51:03.expect it of Feliciano Lopez, but the 19th seed is out of the

:51:04. > :51:07.Championship said. So, only a couple of matches left on court. Everybody

:51:08. > :51:10.is really enjoying Court No. 2, and we're going to drop in there for the

:51:11. > :51:15.next couple of minutes before the highlights show. Clare Balding will

:51:16. > :51:23.have all the stories of the day. Back we go.

:51:24. > :51:35.JAMES BURRIDGE: Kuznetsova with the break in the second set. She's just

:51:36. > :51:37.beginning to find that finish, isn't she? Beautiful forehand down the

:51:38. > :51:45.line. ANNABEL CROFT: Just a great change

:51:46. > :51:47.of direction. On the front foot, starting to look much more

:51:48. > :52:10.comfortable. Just getting some momentum going.

:52:11. > :52:21.The coach of Kuznetsova will be happy with what he's seen so far.

:52:22. > :52:47.Still just holding that left hip. She must be feeling a bit sore.

:52:48. > :53:45.She's done amazingly just to continue and not have any fuss.

:53:46. > :54:00.Just a little too ambitious. Kuznetsova consolidates, she's 3-1

:54:01. > :54:03.to the good. Yes, you feel as if on stupor and needs to be aggressive,

:54:04. > :54:10.on the attack, trying to win the points, but the minute the rally

:54:11. > :54:41.extends, it's usually Kuznetsova who is coming out on top.

:54:42. > :55:02.Lovely. Much more like it. Looking to take the initiative, great depth.

:55:03. > :55:11.She's certainly got her fair share of support out here, she's really

:55:12. > :55:16.given them something to cheer about. Lovely return from Kuznetsova,

:55:17. > :55:26.really deep. No substitute for that on a grass court.

:55:27. > :55:39.A couple of cheap points now on this Jabeur serve, communion really

:55:40. > :56:05.handy. Just 51% of her first serves are going in right now.
