:00:48. > :00:54.Welcome to Wimbledon. Welcome back if you were watching on BBC One. It

:00:55. > :00:59.is Dave three of the Championships and we will focus on Centre Court

:01:00. > :01:03.because both British number ones will be there. Joe Anaconda is about

:01:04. > :01:12.to walk out and Andy Murray will be second on. Lots of stars on many of

:01:13. > :01:18.show courts. Jo Konta is just about to walk out to pre-Donna Vekic who

:01:19. > :01:23.Peter Reid a few weeks ago. Dustin Brown is a talented extrovert. And

:01:24. > :01:37.Rafael Nadal against Donald Young, Battle of the left-handers. Venus

:01:38. > :01:44.Williams will be in action later. And Simona Halep is up against the

:01:45. > :01:48.conqueror of Laura Robson, Beatriz Haddad Maia. We will also keep an

:01:49. > :01:57.eye on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Marin Cilic is still looking tender.

:01:58. > :02:05.One result to bring new and great news for Heather Watson. She looks

:02:06. > :02:15.to be back in her best form. Defeating Anastasija Sevastova of

:02:16. > :02:20.Lithuania. This is a player who put a big names in the past and cooling

:02:21. > :02:28.Jo Konta. That really is a wonderful performance from Heather. She is

:02:29. > :02:33.going to be racing back of the world rankings. She is 102 at the moment

:02:34. > :02:44.but she deserves to be in the top 20 at the least. Well done to Heather.

:02:45. > :02:51.So much to look forward to today. You can follow all the action on the

:02:52. > :02:56.BBC sport website, the red button, the BBC sport app, radio five live,

:02:57. > :03:07.the BBC News Channel. We want to hear from you as well. Please get in

:03:08. > :03:12.touch using this hash tag. We mentioned it Jo Konta on Centre

:03:13. > :03:16.Court. This is her first appearance here, her first-round match was

:03:17. > :03:20.played on Court number one against Donna Vekic. There will be a big

:03:21. > :03:22.cheer for Jo Konta, the British number one and a contender for the

:03:23. > :03:42.title. CHEERING What a wonderful couple of years for

:03:43. > :03:46.Jo Konta. She has made a big breakthrough and she is facing a

:03:47. > :03:52.difficult opponent, Donna Vekic, she beat her in Nottingham and she was a

:03:53. > :03:57.good junior. Jo Konta has got the big weapons, the ground shots and

:03:58. > :04:02.has served. This match is just about to get underway on Centre Court. Let

:04:03. > :04:09.us hear from Jo Konta, she has been speaking to Phil Jones.

:04:10. > :04:16.I was looking forward to playing my first round here, I got to play on

:04:17. > :04:22.Court one which is a beautiful court. I got to play against an

:04:23. > :04:32.opponent who I lost to not too long ago. I did not have any trouble. I

:04:33. > :04:35.hope that continues. An ace to win a match for Joe Anaconda and there is

:04:36. > :04:40.a smile for her as she moves through to the second row with little fuss.

:04:41. > :04:45.What is it like to be a British player at Wimbledon and you will be

:04:46. > :04:52.on Centre Court as long as you progress, I imagine, what is it like

:04:53. > :04:57.for you to play? I think with most players, the longer you are involved

:04:58. > :05:02.in an event, the more you find your footing on the court. Whatever court

:05:03. > :05:07.I will be scheduled on to play, you're still part of Wimbledon and

:05:08. > :05:10.part of this magnificent event. I am definitely going to do my best to

:05:11. > :05:16.try to stay here for a full fortnight. Importantly I will try to

:05:17. > :05:21.compete and enjoy each match. This is my home Grand Slam. It is

:05:22. > :05:25.something I am very proud of and very excited about. When it comes to

:05:26. > :05:30.this part of the season I want to be involved in it as long as I can, to

:05:31. > :05:37.feed off that home crowd. It seems you are peaking at the right time,

:05:38. > :05:42.is that right to say? It is sometimes hard to see if you are

:05:43. > :05:48.peaking or not. I am going into match looking to compete the best

:05:49. > :05:53.that can. We know that the standard of women's tennis is very high. I

:05:54. > :06:02.know I will have a battle in every match. There is no better place to

:06:03. > :06:06.battle than at Wimbledon. SUE BARKER: We will be joining this

:06:07. > :06:12.Centre Court. There she is getting ready for her match against Donna

:06:13. > :06:15.Vekic. We be right back with this match. Let us show you what is

:06:16. > :06:22.happening elsewhere. Play is underway on all the show courts. On

:06:23. > :06:26.Court number three, Heather Watson will face the winner of this match.

:06:27. > :06:31.It looks like Victoria Azarenka, the lady who was reading her notes. She

:06:32. > :06:36.is not exceeded this year. She had our first child at the end of last

:06:37. > :06:42.year. She is up against the semifinalist from last year. That

:06:43. > :06:46.match is featured on the red button. On Court number one, it is Kei

:06:47. > :06:51.Nishikori the against Sergiy Stakhovsky. He is the player who put

:06:52. > :07:04.out Roger Federer in 2013. You can watch that match on the BBC

:07:05. > :07:08.sport website. And on Court two, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, so many people

:07:09. > :07:13.like to watch. He is the 12th seed. He is taking on the Battalion,

:07:14. > :07:19.Simone Bolelli. -- the Italian. It is on the BBC sport website. We will

:07:20. > :07:24.keep you up-to-date with the scores as they go along. Let us go straight

:07:25. > :07:26.back to Centre Court and join the commentators. Kim Clijsters

:07:27. > :07:38.alongside Sam Smith. COMMENTATOR: It is not a bad review.

:07:39. > :07:44.Welcome back to Wimbledon after a long absence. It has been a while.

:07:45. > :07:55.Some changes for due? Quite a few changes, especially in the player 's

:07:56. > :07:59.alia. That area. There is more space upstairs. The food has definitely

:08:00. > :08:06.been upgraded. It was good in the past but now there is more variety.

:08:07. > :08:12.The players are spoiled. I tell you what has changed, Britain now has

:08:13. > :08:18.one of the highest seeds in your Anaconda and a contender for the

:08:19. > :08:23.title. I'm sure you have kept your eye on her. You have players that

:08:24. > :08:28.you watch out for. What has impressed you about Jo over the last

:08:29. > :08:35.18 months? What has impressed me is the consistency that she had. She

:08:36. > :08:44.has really built up her confidence. She is somebody who works hard. She

:08:45. > :08:46.has disciplined. She was coached by Michael Cheng the past. There is a

:08:47. > :09:01.connection. You keep your eye on. It'll be interesting to see how she

:09:02. > :09:05.this match. APPLAUSE Both players walked out to a

:09:06. > :10:07.tremendous reception. It is a packed stadium and the Royal box.

:10:08. > :10:13.Konta won the toss and elected to serve. Of those kind of returns you

:10:14. > :10:17.can see why. This is the third meeting between these two. The first

:10:18. > :10:31.was last year on the American hard courts.

:10:32. > :10:38.It was Donna Vekic who got her revenge on the grass of not come in

:10:39. > :10:45.a few weeks ago. Raqqa the one that the first set comfortably and then

:10:46. > :11:31.lost to tapeworms, 7-6 and 7-5. -- lost to take sets.

:11:32. > :11:38.Donna Vekic had a tough opening match against Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

:11:39. > :11:42.There seems to be every letter of the alpha in that name. It took two

:11:43. > :12:35.hours to come through. Donna was very much a teenage

:12:36. > :12:40.sensation. Got to her first tour final at 16 under first title at 18.

:12:41. > :12:46.She was overwhelmed with all the expectation and hate around her.

:12:47. > :12:54.Back into the world's top 60 and playing some of the best tennis of

:12:55. > :13:03.her life. That was a very good hold. Good start for the Croatian number

:13:04. > :13:09.three. There is a Belgian connection with yourself, Kim, Ante Coric of

:13:10. > :13:17.Konta. That is the key in the quite. Her hitting partner in the red. Tell

:13:18. > :13:22.us about him, he was on tour with you for many years and what he will

:13:23. > :13:26.bring to the game of Jo. He was my hitting partner for the few years.

:13:27. > :13:32.He was a childhood friend and I trained with him when I was 10-12

:13:33. > :13:37.years old. He is not a very outspoken coach. He is not slowed.

:13:38. > :13:43.He is quiet and brings peace into your team and camp. On Court he is

:13:44. > :15:34.quiet. It brings calmness. There is another connection. My old

:15:35. > :15:35.coach helped to get her passport. That is two coaches that I have had

:15:36. > :15:56.that have helped. Both women safely on-board on this

:15:57. > :16:35.Centre Court match in the three. Both of them are five. Both are

:16:36. > :16:38.athletic. Like you can, her father was a goalkeeper, a professional

:16:39. > :16:45.footballer. Her mother was a very good hurdler. He played for the

:16:46. > :18:06.local team in the north of Croatia. Close to the Slovenian border.

:18:07. > :18:13.They have started off at quite a lick. They both look like they have

:18:14. > :18:24.settled into the match from the start. Donna, that shot was so deep

:18:25. > :18:26.and flat, it was difficult with the grip of Jo on the forehand to get it

:18:27. > :18:46.back in time. And very assured the game from this

:18:47. > :18:59.young Croatian. It is on serve in this opening set.

:19:00. > :19:07.You were very good, very young, got lots of press attention. Similar way

:19:08. > :19:11.to Donna but Donna did not handle it. How did you manage it all and

:19:12. > :19:16.how difficult is it? We say she could not cope with the expectations

:19:17. > :19:20.but how difficult is it to deal with the attention? It depends on your

:19:21. > :19:26.personality and depends on the people you have around. I never

:19:27. > :19:30.worked with the manager or management company. The distractions

:19:31. > :19:36.that come after you do well in a Grand Slam with sponsors and photo

:19:37. > :19:45.shoots, it was something that I never really enjoyed that. For many

:19:46. > :19:51.years, early on in my career, that was not apart I wanted to put energy

:19:52. > :19:56.into. It would've been helpful for me to stay focused on playing tennis

:19:57. > :20:51.and try to improve as a young tennis player gain experience.

:20:52. > :21:35.Jo opened up with a routine victory against the player from Chinese

:21:36. > :21:37.Taipei. Just drop four games. She was a player she lost two at the

:21:38. > :21:58.French Open just over one month ago. I think the tennis gods have been

:21:59. > :22:02.having some fun with Jo. In the second road, she must've looked at

:22:03. > :22:07.the draw and felt, I am playing Vekic who I lost to a couple of

:22:08. > :22:41.weeks ago. Big revenge. Those tennis gods can be nastier.

:22:42. > :22:48.When you play someone like Donna who likes to attack straight on with the

:22:49. > :22:51.return, you automatically put more pressure on your own service game.

:22:52. > :24:13.Trying to make a lot of first serves.

:24:14. > :24:21.Donna certainly knows her way around London extremely well. She won the

:24:22. > :24:26.under 12 nationals in Croatia after starting at six at a local tennis

:24:27. > :24:31.club. She realised she needed training in better facilities so off

:24:32. > :24:35.to England to train at Northwood, at the junior tennis initiative with

:24:36. > :24:38.David Felgate. He is a name who you might remember as he coached Tim

:24:39. > :24:50.Henman. She was there from 9-18. David Felgate also worked with CD

:24:51. > :25:04.release. Another Belgian. This is higher level from both

:25:05. > :25:07.women. Very positive start from Konta and it needed to be. Vekic has

:25:08. > :25:54.came out with real intent. Just a little miscue. Konta able to

:25:55. > :26:00.hold. You have known that Wim Fissette since juniors, is his first

:26:01. > :26:06.name short for anything? Is it short for Wimbledon? Maybe. It could be a

:26:07. > :26:49.new nickname for him. It is not short for anything. Keep it simple.

:26:50. > :26:54.Because they have played recently they know each other's game well,

:26:55. > :26:56.what to expect from the opponent and what to do. They have just kept

:26:57. > :27:37.going since then. His upper body is too close to the

:27:38. > :27:38.ball. She is not making enough space to let her arm flow through the

:27:39. > :28:03.shot. Superb from Konta. I love her

:28:04. > :28:07.footwork. Especially from where we are sitting. It is very nice to see

:28:08. > :28:11.the intensity from the return onwards. How low she is able to stay

:28:12. > :28:29.through the entire rally. Vekic is very aware that she did not

:28:30. > :28:33.get off to a good start after she played in the final in Nottingham

:28:34. > :28:34.and dropped the opening set very easily. She has started very well

:28:35. > :29:42.here. Wonderful control from the young

:29:43. > :29:53.Croatian. It remains on serve here in this opening set.

:29:54. > :30:02.How difficult is it when you have played somebody a pew weeks ago and

:30:03. > :30:05.you come into a match like this and you play them so soon, how do you

:30:06. > :30:13.keep all the memories from that match out of your head? It works

:30:14. > :30:19.both ways. It can be easy at times because you remember the things that

:30:20. > :30:23.went wrong or that you did well. You don't have to specifically go back

:30:24. > :30:27.and watch videos of your opponent because you feel it. You know what

:30:28. > :30:34.it felt like when you played them. I guess it also depends on whether you

:30:35. > :30:38.won or lost. For Donna, having won that match, it would have given her

:30:39. > :30:46.confidence, more belief to step out here today and to really believed in

:30:47. > :30:52.her chances. For Donna, that a win is maybe more of an advantage today.

:30:53. > :30:58.It is certainly a warm one, I hope everyone is taking an plenty of

:30:59. > :31:36.water or a few other beverages which I think are available!

:31:37. > :31:43.You'll see plenty of looks from Dahmer to her player box. A full

:31:44. > :31:55.team in there, including good friend Stan Wawrinka. -- from Donna. I

:31:56. > :31:58.think she'd prefer being known for her tennis rather than her

:31:59. > :32:03.boyfriend. I remember watching a match occurs in Rome, I think she

:32:04. > :32:11.played about three and half hours, he stayed right until the end. He is

:32:12. > :32:15.a good lad, Stan. And I have seen her at the French Open, going

:32:16. > :32:21.through all his matches. It works both ways. You know what that is

:32:22. > :32:26.like, or those years with Lleyton Yes, I have seen a lot of five set

:32:27. > :33:30.matches. But it helps. They are both playing very good

:33:31. > :33:43.tennis. Vekic has come out here with real

:33:44. > :33:45.belief and intent from that win a couple of weeks ago in Nottingham,

:33:46. > :35:49.the warm up events for Wimbledon. Great finish to the game. Another

:35:50. > :36:22.tough service hold for Britain's Johanna Konta.

:36:23. > :36:30.A real sort of flexibility about Donna Vekic. I don't know if that's

:36:31. > :36:34.anything to do with in her early life she did a lot of gymnastics,

:36:35. > :36:39.which I think is good preparation for tennis. You used to do the

:36:40. > :36:41.splits occasionally? Yes, my mother was a gymnast. She used to stretch

:36:42. > :36:54.us out a lot! I always said, I had the strength in

:36:55. > :36:57.my legs from my dad because he was a footballer and my flexibility from

:36:58. > :37:27.my mother, because she was a gymnast.

:37:28. > :37:52.Konte, a smart move there. Just creeping into the shade at the back

:37:53. > :37:56.of the court. It is a hot one out there. I think we might have a top

:37:57. > :38:14.of 27 degrees today, and they are really going for it out here.

:38:15. > :39:02.We can do heat here, you know, Kim. It's unusual...

:39:03. > :39:09.I like how she stepped in after a big serve like that. She stays on

:39:10. > :39:11.the court after she lands and it looks like she knows there is a

:39:12. > :39:40.shorter ball coming. She is not going to challenge.

:39:41. > :39:50.Margins vary tight. Still on serve, Vekic leading 4-3.

:39:51. > :39:58.It is super out there, here this afternoon, and also in the women's

:39:59. > :40:02.game particularly since you have been away, Kim. But taking a look at

:40:03. > :40:07.this Vekic forehand, you need a really good weapon now, don't you?

:40:08. > :40:13.Can you talk us why through why this is such a good shot? Her shots

:40:14. > :40:18.automatically are flat and had. I think on grass that is a great

:40:19. > :40:23.combination to have and makes it very tough for your opponent. I'm

:40:24. > :40:27.actually surprised about the way she's moving, she seems to be

:40:28. > :40:33.moving, to me, better I expected her to move. But her forehand

:40:34. > :40:39.naturally... A lot of girls prefer to hit their backhand, feel a bit

:40:40. > :40:43.more comfortable hitting their backhand, but I think Donna, she's

:40:44. > :40:47.really going for her shots. Like we said before, I think that match in

:40:48. > :40:52.Nottingham they played really, helped her to know where her great

:40:53. > :41:00.game plan should be a and to know she needs to play the best of tennis

:41:01. > :41:02.to try and beat Johanna here today. Speaking of gymnastics, you might

:41:03. > :41:09.have got a bit of a glimpse of one of the greats, Nadia.

:41:10. > :41:45.There she is. First gymnast ever to score a perfect ten. It was a long

:41:46. > :41:48.time ago now, 1976, 41 years ago, multiple Olympic gold medallist and

:41:49. > :42:02.a big friend of Simona Halep, was playing later on Court Number One.

:42:03. > :42:14.UMPIRE: Miss Konte challenging the ball. The ball was called out. 12

:42:15. > :42:15.Hawk-Eye cameras positioned around this Court, beaming down onto the

:42:16. > :42:27.mark. UMPIRE: The call stands. Donna

:42:28. > :42:34.looking very relieved. We need the technology. So, Konte in a little

:42:35. > :42:55.spot here on serve for the first time.

:42:56. > :43:08.It's the pressure of the return Donna puts you under. 0-30, an

:43:09. > :43:15.important point to win. The nerds get there a little bit. First break

:43:16. > :43:21.points on the counterpoint. -- the nerves get there a little bit.

:43:22. > :43:42.That was a scary moment if you are a Konte fan. Really held her ground

:43:43. > :44:24.well there. There is the break. Came after just

:44:25. > :45:35.34 minutes. Vekic now in the driving seat of this opening set.

:45:36. > :45:41.When you serve for the first set in a game like this, it was nice to win

:45:42. > :46:11.that first game, to give yourself a little bit of a lead.

:46:12. > :46:25.That a tough serve to read. Why? It doesn't change much, whether she

:46:26. > :46:30.goes out wide or down the T, almost like Lindsay Davenport when she used

:46:31. > :46:34.to serve. It was a very tough serve to read.

:46:35. > :46:41.She will be very happy with that comparison right now, she'd be

:46:42. > :47:11.delighted to take this first set. She has got two chances to do so.

:47:12. > :47:18.It really has been a helter-skelter opening set of tennis. The pace they

:47:19. > :47:24.started off with, from the first ball. When the tempo is so high,

:47:25. > :47:27.it's sometimes easy just to stay in that crosscourt rally and keep going

:47:28. > :47:31.and going, but it's important not to do that, to try and mix it up and

:47:32. > :47:36.move your opponent around. Especially Donna, because it's not

:47:37. > :47:51.like she is the best move out there. -- mover out there.

:47:52. > :48:00.Two set point saved by this very disciplined 26-year-old, meticulous

:48:01. > :48:04.in her preparation. Seemingly dealing with all the attention and

:48:05. > :48:07.eyes on her over this fortnight, particularly in the lead up. Such a

:48:08. > :48:40.great run at Eastbourne last week. Serving out for the set in this kind

:48:41. > :48:48.of arena is never plain sailing. Konte with a chance to rake back. --

:48:49. > :48:51.break back. Konte is also the player who is not going to give you

:48:52. > :48:58.anything for free, you are going to have to win your points. She so

:48:59. > :49:10.consistent. At closing out a set or a Mac, makes it even harder. -- or a

:49:11. > :49:15.Mac. -- match. Challenging the call on the left, centreline, the ball

:49:16. > :49:20.was called out. Too many players like to challenge first and second

:49:21. > :49:24.serves, they feel it breaks up their rhythm. She must have thought it was

:49:25. > :49:28.in, she was wrong. You are allowed three incorrect challenges a set and

:49:29. > :49:31.you get an extra one if it goes into a tie-break. Oh, dear! I think she

:49:32. > :49:46.was hoping with that first one. Jo had a couple break points in the

:49:47. > :49:52.beginning of the match and another one here.

:49:53. > :49:59.And it is an immediate break back. Konte stays alive in this vital

:50:00. > :50:20.opening set. Kim, she has had the most amazing 18

:50:21. > :50:25.months. Winning in Sydney at the start of the year, the beginning of

:50:26. > :50:29.the Australian summer, and a tournament you have won, Miami,

:50:30. > :50:35.which is a huge event on the tour. Inside the top ten and looking like

:50:36. > :50:39.she belonged there. But a couple of years ago she was 150 in the wild,

:50:40. > :50:46.in the satellites. Have you spoken to her about this transformation?

:50:47. > :50:51.Not really, but you can just see the confidence building over the last 18

:50:52. > :50:58.months, like you said. She knows that she belongs up there. Like I

:50:59. > :51:02.said, she's very disciplined. She works extremely hard and it shows.

:51:03. > :51:05.She really knows what her game is supposed to be out there. That is

:51:06. > :51:36.something that is important. Players are ready. Quiet please,

:51:37. > :51:38.thank you. Konte, serving to stay in this

:51:39. > :52:32.opening set. It takes a lot to shake Jo these

:52:33. > :52:38.days, 30 matches won on the tour and only halfway through the year. Not

:52:39. > :52:49.at the top of the rankings for matches won, but not far off.

:52:50. > :53:00.She really raised her level. When she was set point down, she really

:53:01. > :53:05.took it to Donna Vekic and was even a little more aggressive, I thought.

:53:06. > :53:11.She is full of confidence coming off that wonderful week in Eastbourne,

:53:12. > :53:12.where she beat Jelena Ostapenko and then the world number one, Angelique

:53:13. > :53:24.Kerber. A couple of aces in the game. A very

:53:25. > :53:33.straightforward hold and Konte levels up in this opening set.

:53:34. > :53:38.SUE BARKER: We are living Centre Court on BBC Two. If you want to

:53:39. > :53:42.continue watching this match, it is now on BBC One. If you want to

:53:43. > :53:49.continue watching Joe Konte, this match is now on BBC One.

:53:50. > :53:53.Here on BBC Two, we will be heading over to Court number three, to see

:53:54. > :54:01.another British player in action, Aljaz Bedene, in that match is just

:54:02. > :54:05.underway. Early stages of the match in the first set, that is where we

:54:06. > :54:14.will be joining in just a moment. Before we do that, let's round up

:54:15. > :54:20.some news from earlier today. Great news for Britain with Heather

:54:21. > :54:27.Watson, she has come through against the Latvian, the 18th seed. Heather

:54:28. > :54:31.6-0, 6-4. Ranked outside the top 100, that is certainly going to

:54:32. > :54:37.change when the rankings are brought out after the Championships. Really

:54:38. > :54:40.a resurgent Heather Watson, now working with Colin, which has made a

:54:41. > :54:43.big impression. She looks back to her best and back into the third

:54:44. > :54:46.round for the third time. Let's hear what she had to say after she left

:54:47. > :54:55.the court. Congratulations, an incredible start

:54:56. > :54:58.to the Mac, you came out with such intensity. You spoke the other day

:54:59. > :55:03.and said you knew she was going to be a threat. Were you surprised at

:55:04. > :55:10.how you both started? Yeah, I felt very good at the

:55:11. > :55:15.beginning of the match. Very on it and relaxed, more relaxed than I was

:55:16. > :55:19.in my first match. I obviously, I know how she plays, she's a great

:55:20. > :55:25.player and I was expecting her to be playing her best, so I was prepared

:55:26. > :55:29.that. Yeah, she started to step up in the second set, which I knew she

:55:30. > :55:34.would, but I was able to keep my cool and just stick with her.

:55:35. > :55:37.The intensity you showed, the mental strength you showed just to keep

:55:38. > :55:42.going and not letting anything get on top of you, even when she did

:55:43. > :55:46.come back, how important is that for everything Wimbledon throws at you?

:55:47. > :55:50.It is very important, yeah. She's a great player and I have to expect

:55:51. > :55:58.that she's going to raise her level after that first set and try

:55:59. > :56:00.something new. So it's just, I have to do remain calm and just adjust my

:56:01. > :56:04.game. In terms of your own performance,

:56:05. > :56:07.what's pleasing with you with how you are playing out there, you are

:56:08. > :56:11.covering the grass so well. Just everything really. I feel like

:56:12. > :56:16.I'm seeing the ball very big and moving well, which is very important

:56:17. > :56:20.for the grass. I hit a few double faults today, but all in all I feel

:56:21. > :56:25.like I am serving well. As Aitor Karanka took the first set, they

:56:26. > :56:29.only played two matches by the time you took your Mac. Do you have a

:56:30. > :56:37.preference on who you play? I have no idea. Whoever wins, it's a very,

:56:38. > :56:41.very tough match. Taking this one match at a time question yes, I have

:56:42. > :56:46.no idea what the draw is. OK, congratulations.

:56:47. > :56:54.That is the best way to do it. Victoria Azarenka won the second set

:56:55. > :56:57.as well to put out the 15th seed. Victoria Azarenka, former world

:56:58. > :57:01.number one, looks to be getting back to her best as well. It is Heather

:57:02. > :57:05.Watson against Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

:57:06. > :57:17.And one other result to bring you, the eighth seed, has beaten the big

:57:18. > :57:25.hitter from the United States, Jennifer Brady. Cibulkova Only just

:57:26. > :57:26.over five or two but she packs a punch. She's through to the next

:57:27. > :57:40.round at Wimbledon once again. And she is happy! Well done. One of

:57:41. > :57:45.the popular players on the tour. This is Andy Murray at earlier

:57:46. > :57:48.today, we were watching him practice, going through with Matt

:57:49. > :57:53.Little all those training exercises he does, and then a warm up as well.

:57:54. > :57:58.There was a limp Berrigan, which was a bit of a worrying sight for all of

:57:59. > :58:01.us watching Andy Murray. -- a limp again. He will need to be at his

:58:02. > :58:06.best against Dustin Brown. Ivan Lendl looking on. Dustin Brown loves

:58:07. > :58:10.playing on the grass courts and he loves to be on the big Show court.

:58:11. > :58:11.It could be a tricky one for Andy Murray. That is second on Centre

:58:12. > :58:20.Court today. And there are other matches being

:58:21. > :58:25.played at the moment. This matches our feature on the red button,

:58:26. > :58:29.another of the great entertainers, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the 12th seed. He

:58:30. > :58:39.is a set up and it is on serve in the second against Bolelli. K

:58:40. > :58:45.Nishikori has taken the opening set against Sergiy Stakhovsky. He put up

:58:46. > :58:53.Federer in 2013. You can follow that much on the BBC sport website.

:58:54. > :58:57.So, we have Johanna Konta on Centre Court on BBC One, and here on BBC

:58:58. > :59:01.Two we are going to concentrate on Aljaz Bedene of Great Britain. As

:59:02. > :59:10.you can see it is 3-3 in the opening set. Let's join Jamie Baker and John

:59:11. > :59:15.Inverdale this -- for this one. COMMENTATOR: Middleweight battle

:59:16. > :59:21.between two of the lightest men on court. That was a brilliant winner

:59:22. > :59:26.from Dzumhur. Both of these guys tipping the scales at just 70

:59:27. > :59:30.kilograms. And an interesting subplot to this match is that they

:59:31. > :59:37.are the best of friends off court. And in the first round Dzumhur

:59:38. > :59:47.didn't have any kit to play in here at Wimbledon somehow. So Bedene lent

:59:48. > :59:54.him his. And 48 hours later they are playing each other. And before you

:59:55. > :00:02.ask we don't actually know if Dzumhur has brought his own kit or

:00:03. > :00:03.is using bed's again. 3-3, early break of serve for the Brit and then

:00:04. > :00:47.hit back rapidly. Is it easier or is it almost

:00:48. > :00:52.impossible to play your best mate? It can be difficult. It can feel

:00:53. > :00:55.almost like a practice. If you are good friends then you will have

:00:56. > :00:57.practised a lot together. Then the second round at Wimbledon, one of

:00:58. > :01:05.the biggest matches of your career. Third place from Bedene in this

:01:06. > :01:15.match. The British number three got here

:01:16. > :01:26.because of that victory over Ivo Karlovic in the first round. Ivo

:01:27. > :01:34.Karlovic served 44 aces. It was even Stephens. And then matter to hit two

:01:35. > :01:38.of the best shots he has hit in his life, bang, bang, that was the game

:01:39. > :01:44.in the end. It must've given him an enormous boost in confidence going

:01:45. > :01:47.into this match. The end of that match was almost like a dream. It is

:01:48. > :01:56.how you would want to finish any match. We are just looking at Aljaz

:01:57. > :02:08.Bedene's connections. That this is coach, Nick. And just behind is the

:02:09. > :02:14.team of Damir Dzumhur. Enjoying the Wimbledon son. The Bosnian came

:02:15. > :02:19.through his first match with the loss of just four games. He is not a

:02:20. > :02:24.mug on the surface. His first port of call is not the net. He will stay

:02:25. > :02:30.at the baseline for as long as it takes. We have seen some variety

:02:31. > :02:31.from, some drop shots. The first few were not successful but he has shown

:02:32. > :02:53.he has got lots of good fuel. He is just five. That has to make

:02:54. > :03:12.him a contender for the shortest player. -- five feet, nine inches

:03:13. > :03:19.tall. That is a great shot from Bedene. I am not sure what Dzumhur

:03:20. > :03:24.is aggravated about. There was something he was not happy with.

:03:25. > :03:25.That approach shot was deep enough but not quite accurate into the

:03:26. > :03:55.corner. That is a beautiful shot. This

:03:56. > :03:56.backhand pass is the match that won him -- is the shot that won him the

:03:57. > :04:18.match against Ivo Karlovic. If you are an occasional tennis pure

:04:19. > :04:26.but love Wimbledon, you might not be aware of the radical intrigue

:04:27. > :04:32.surrounding Aljaz Bedene. -- political. He is Slovenian by birth

:04:33. > :04:37.but has British nationality, he got that more than a couple of years

:04:38. > :04:39.ago. And he has been trying ever since to become eligible to play for

:04:40. > :05:15.Great Britain in the Davis Cup. He has lived here for over one

:05:16. > :05:19.decade now. When the doctor, he does feel he has been given a bad deal by

:05:20. > :05:23.the International tennis Federation. He is not able to represent Great

:05:24. > :05:28.Britain at the moment. Great Britain would not mind having him in the

:05:29. > :05:29.team with a backhand like that. Three in this game. A second break

:05:30. > :05:41.of serve. You must have played with him? I

:05:42. > :05:46.have practised with him a lot. I came up against them for the first

:05:47. > :05:47.time in Slovenia at the futures tournament on clay when I was a

:05:48. > :06:08.teenager. Here are out of it now, you can give

:06:09. > :06:14.an honest answer, should he be eligible to play for Great Britain?

:06:15. > :06:20.That is a tough question. In my view, personally, no. I can totally

:06:21. > :06:33.understand why he feels aggrieved by what has happened. Without going

:06:34. > :06:37.into the details, he submitted his application before the ITF decided

:06:38. > :06:41.to change the rules. They changed the rules but then said he was no

:06:42. > :07:09.longer eligible. That is the basis of his appeal.

:07:10. > :07:19.That was just wide from Bedene. Dzumhur has had some nice touches

:07:20. > :07:23.around the net. To finish this, do you think that the British tennis

:07:24. > :07:30.community would be happy to see him playing for Great Britain? No

:07:31. > :07:40.question, delighted. My view is that he had represented Slovenia as a

:07:41. > :07:44.senior tennis player. That is where my opinion comes in. If it had been

:07:45. > :07:48.junior tennis, that is a different story. It was senior tennis so I can

:07:49. > :07:53.see why the rules have gone that way. He is also one of the nicest,

:07:54. > :07:57.most respectable professional men on the tour. You can see from the level

:07:58. > :08:02.of his tennis he would be an amazing asset to the team.

:08:03. > :08:10.That is the first set for the British number three. He has started

:08:11. > :08:12.well and then had the depth of the next few games but getting better as

:08:13. > :08:32.the set went on. Four aces from Bedene in that first

:08:33. > :08:36.set. He really is very lean. He would not think he would be one of

:08:37. > :08:42.the biggest servers on the team. It is not just about speed, it is

:08:43. > :08:49.placement. Anybody who has served 20 odd aces any grand slam tennis match

:08:50. > :08:53.has to be feared. He is very consistent with the service action.

:08:54. > :08:57.He has a fast arm. He does that need to force every single serve and that

:08:58. > :09:04.is why we see the accuracy, he is not hitting every single serve at

:09:05. > :09:08.100%. This is the facts and figures, for what it is worth, from the point

:09:09. > :09:12.of view of the media, you were talking about being one of the

:09:13. > :09:17.nicest guys and usually respectful, he is a great guy to deal with from

:09:18. > :09:22.the media's point of view. He always gives more than you expect, he is

:09:23. > :09:28.honest and will look you in the eye. He is one of those players that you

:09:29. > :09:32.hope continues his upwards journey. I would tell him to go out of the

:09:33. > :09:39.stadium because you do not know what is tennis. Whether it is a break

:09:40. > :09:46.point or whatever. The first point it is an unbelievable mistake from

:09:47. > :09:54.my side. Great point for what? What we can take from that which is what

:09:55. > :10:00.Dzumhur was getting agitated about, it was something in the Bedene box,

:10:01. > :10:05.he thinks, applauded the fact that he, Dzumhur, played a bad first

:10:06. > :10:09.point in that game. He feels that if anybody had done something like that

:10:10. > :10:14.in his box he would be disgraced and it is not in the etiquette of the

:10:15. > :10:16.sport. Overreacting? These are the types of things that can boil over

:10:17. > :10:44.when you know everybody so well. I do remember the first day of the

:10:45. > :10:55.tennis in the Olympics in Beijing's...

:10:56. > :11:03.Irrespective of who won the point, the crowd who were not tennis saddy

:11:04. > :11:06.were applauding double faults and the umpire having to explain to the

:11:07. > :11:16.code that you are not supposed to do that. -- to the audience. That is a

:11:17. > :11:21.glorious shot and that was an even better one. Well played, Aljaz

:11:22. > :11:26.Bedene. I was just about to see how good a drop shot this was. Look how

:11:27. > :11:30.quickly Bedene gets up to this ball. There is still hate on it which

:11:31. > :11:46.allows him to get the pace onto the shot across the court.

:11:47. > :11:53.He might not spend much time on the tour in the upper half of the court

:11:54. > :12:08.but he is a very deft player when the need arises.

:12:09. > :12:16.Any of you listening who have been involved in junior tennis, you will

:12:17. > :12:20.know the scourge of people applauding. And how it really annoys

:12:21. > :12:42.you. That is a good opening break from

:12:43. > :12:59.the point of view of Bedene. That was not a great shot, the last

:13:00. > :13:04.one. Slightly surprised by the performance of Dzumhur so far. I was

:13:05. > :13:09.expecting him to be more consistent. I appreciate that the drop shots and

:13:10. > :13:13.on the touch are part of his game. Shot selection is something that has

:13:14. > :13:17.not been as sharp as it normally was. That last shot, there was no

:13:18. > :13:22.speed on the ball and it is difficult to execute a drop shot

:13:23. > :13:26.when there is no speed on the ball. He is still having a conversation

:13:27. > :13:30.with his box or at least with somebody. It is with somebody who he

:13:31. > :13:34.feels have said something they should not have said that the wrong

:13:35. > :13:36.time. He needs to focus on the game because he is one set and one break

:13:37. > :14:02.down after barely half an hour. Bedene, I think he felt the ball was

:14:03. > :14:37.long, but he had thought about it and continued the rally.

:14:38. > :14:43.Perhaps this is the shot that will get Dzumhur back into the match. A

:14:44. > :14:45.couple of times he has taken a backhand down the line early, he has

:14:46. > :15:23.had success with that. It is a very different game to the

:15:24. > :15:29.one that Bedene played a few days ago. There was one rally that was 11

:15:30. > :15:52.shots against Ivo Karlovic. The rest were very quick.

:15:53. > :16:07.Still two break back points for the Bosnian.

:16:08. > :16:16.What are you supposed to do? It is no good just standing there, Dzumhur

:16:17. > :16:27.ran off into the tram lines before... It is all about timing. If

:16:28. > :16:41.you do what he did then you give your opponent an open goal.

:16:42. > :16:54.He has broken back. Bedene saw the opportunity down the line but the

:16:55. > :16:58.ball drifted just wide. As in the first set, an early break for the

:16:59. > :17:23.British player. And an immediate break back from the Bosnian.

:17:24. > :17:48.Another forehand just drifting wide of the sideline.

:17:49. > :17:56.Lovely big forehand from the Bosnian that created that opportunity. This

:17:57. > :18:00.is one of the matches where you think that Aljaz Bedene should be

:18:01. > :18:01.thinking he is in complete control but somehow he is not and it is

:18:02. > :18:16.irritating. And as a consequence of this, he's

:18:17. > :18:23.not focused on the ball in hand. Players of a certain temperament,

:18:24. > :18:25.you are absolutely right. He almost did not blink when he lost serve

:18:26. > :18:48.because he is so level-headed. This is a similar pattern to the

:18:49. > :18:52.first set. Good to get the early break but not able to drive home the

:18:53. > :19:02.momentum straightaway, he needed a second chance.

:19:03. > :19:18.It is all fine margins. Two balls into the tape and Bedene finds

:19:19. > :19:23.himself behind in the second set. When you are of the physical stature

:19:24. > :19:30.that the Bosnian is, is there in the modern game a limit? You are

:19:31. > :19:34.substantially bigger than he is, is very finite point in the men's game

:19:35. > :19:40.nowadays beyond which you cannot play? In terms of you hate? In terms

:19:41. > :19:47.of how far up the rankings you can get. I am sure you can always inject

:19:48. > :19:55.yourself with something and go once it. I was thinking of the two

:19:56. > :20:04.Belgian players. Olivier Rockers got into the top 20. He is playing Kei

:20:05. > :20:09.Nishikori. He's not the biggest player. There is no question, with a

:20:10. > :20:14.certain height and frame, there definitely comes an advantage. That

:20:15. > :20:19.is why the vast crop of players are of that stature. If you are slightly

:20:20. > :20:26.smaller then you have something else to make up for it. That might be

:20:27. > :20:34.your mentality. Just be the fiercest of fierce competitors. Which Bedene

:20:35. > :20:43.clearly is. He has had a fantastic run this year. Three challenger

:20:44. > :21:12.tournaments. And winning this year for him has been a habit.

:21:13. > :21:46.And Dzumhur has been upping the aggression in the last ten minutes.

:21:47. > :21:53.If he had seen the first two drop shots that the Bosnian attempted,

:21:54. > :21:58.you would not believe he would play a shot with such touch and skill as

:21:59. > :21:59.that. He has got his eye in when it comes to the drop shot at the

:22:00. > :22:37.moment. Bedene lines up a potential winner

:22:38. > :23:15.and he just miscalculates. Anything you can do... The power of

:23:16. > :23:22.the skies, that this is first drop shot of the match. Dzumhur is good

:23:23. > :23:30.around the court but no way of reading that. By that point you know

:23:31. > :23:33.it is too late. This is a big game. A chance to square things but he

:23:34. > :23:39.does not want to get broken here, the British number three. He needs

:23:40. > :23:57.some more big serves like that. Currently ranked 58 in the world,

:23:58. > :24:08.Aljaz Bedene, he has been as high as 55. He had a dip that forced him to

:24:09. > :24:12.play on the Challenger tour and that is when he has came back up the

:24:13. > :24:18.rankings. Three challenger wins and one final on the tour as well. When

:24:19. > :24:23.it comes to tight matches, if this was a tight match in 2-3 matches, he

:24:24. > :24:28.would fancy his chances because he has been there so often.

:24:29. > :25:00.He does not want to make mistakes like that.

:25:01. > :25:09.You felt he had got himself back into that match at deuce. A couple

:25:10. > :25:14.of loose shots, especially that shot at deuce, suddenly he is broken and

:25:15. > :25:23.behind. That is a good point about how many matches Bedene has won this

:25:24. > :25:25.year. At one tournaments in a row. At any level you cannot

:25:26. > :25:29.underestimate what that does for your confidence. Especially in the

:25:30. > :25:31.second set, some of the errors we have seen in the last five minutes,

:25:32. > :26:02.they are surprising. That was a good slice backhand from

:26:03. > :26:06.Bedene. That forced Dzumhur into a position we are could not do

:26:07. > :26:11.anything with the ball. Whatever in the world you are watching, looking

:26:12. > :26:15.at the pristine green court and the blue sky, wondering about how warm

:26:16. > :26:22.it is today. You just have to look at the crowd who are using the

:26:23. > :26:26.programmes and anything as fans. We head towards 2pm in the afternoon.

:26:27. > :26:50.It is a really warm summers day here.

:26:51. > :27:00.That ball was kept very loud. He uses the slice well. It is a

:27:01. > :27:03.floating shot to get back into the point. There were some extra

:27:04. > :27:19.aggression through that contact and it skidded through the court.

:27:20. > :27:25.Dzumhur is one of those players who insists on playing the next point

:27:26. > :27:42.with the same ball if he won the previous point with it.

:27:43. > :27:49.There is that variety again. It was not the best drop shot but it is

:27:50. > :27:56.changing things up. It is not allowing Bedene to get comfortable

:27:57. > :27:59.and to set the baseline. That backhand down the line again. Half a

:28:00. > :28:18.dozen of those. SUE BARKER: Let us update you on

:28:19. > :28:25.what is happening elsewhere. On Centre Court, Jo Konta taking the

:28:26. > :28:30.first set over Donna Vekic. 7-4. Saving two set points. She is such a

:28:31. > :28:34.tough competitor, she came back to take the opening set on the

:28:35. > :28:38.tie-break. Well done to the British number one. That happened a few

:28:39. > :28:43.moments ago. She has dropped serve in the opening game of the second

:28:44. > :28:46.set. This is Donna Vekic with the point to go 2-0 up. That matches on

:28:47. > :29:01.Centre Court and is on BBC One. This is the red button feature

:29:02. > :29:07.match. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, twice a semifinalist, seeded 12. He is 2-0

:29:08. > :29:12.up against Simone Giannelli from Italy, who is a qualifier. On Court

:29:13. > :29:25.number one, Kei Nishikori, seeded number nine.

:29:26. > :29:33.Let us stay to see if Sergiy Stakhovsky gets a double break. He

:29:34. > :29:36.was a top 50 player. He defeated Federer here at the Championships.

:29:37. > :29:41.That is one way to save a break point. You can follow that match on

:29:42. > :29:46.the red button and on the BBC sport website. If you have been watching

:29:47. > :29:52.around the courts and watching Aljaz Bedene and Damir Dzumhur. There are

:29:53. > :29:57.lots of flies. They are flying ants. In the newspaper it is official

:29:58. > :30:02.flank and day. It is when the new Queen leaves a nest and starts a new

:30:03. > :30:07.colony. The thing that I didn't think I would say on BBC television.

:30:08. > :30:12.Apparently they are all around Wimbledon. Look at that. I cannot

:30:13. > :30:17.wait to go down to centre Court at the end of the Johanna Conn the

:30:18. > :30:20.match. They are all over the Championships. You can see the

:30:21. > :30:30.players on Court three struggling as well. Back the match.

:30:31. > :30:41.COMMENTATOR: That's a double fault that Ben and eight could -- could've

:30:42. > :30:43.without. Jamie made the point a moment ago, he's just off it at the

:30:44. > :30:57.moment. And maybe one element in all of

:30:58. > :31:04.this, if you missed us saying this right at the outset, he's basically

:31:05. > :31:10.playing his best mate. And maybe it's quite hard to engender that

:31:11. > :31:11.kind of venom you need against your opponent when somebody is in that

:31:12. > :31:53.situation. And the prize for the winner of this

:31:54. > :32:20.patch is a third round match against Gilles Muller or Lucas Rosol.

:32:21. > :32:32.That staunch the flow of games. The Bosnian won four in a row, but Iraq

:32:33. > :32:37.back to 4-2, just one break of serve. One thing you can guarantee

:32:38. > :32:43.is you're not going to get served off the court. You wouldn't be

:32:44. > :32:48.surprised if they have -- the entire match, however long it lasted,

:32:49. > :33:04.wouldn't see that statistic change. There is always a chance, but you

:33:05. > :33:08.don't want to give away points needlessly like that, which is how I

:33:09. > :33:12.am sure Bedene will see that. It just shows you how different this

:33:13. > :33:19.match is from temporary map's first match against Ivo Karlovic went.

:33:20. > :33:23.He's getting a chance every time today, and on Monday he could have

:33:24. > :33:45.gone three games without getting a chance.

:33:46. > :33:55.A bit of cat and mouse there. It is that backhand down the line again.

:33:56. > :34:04.He has had a lot of success with this two Panda down the line. -- two

:34:05. > :34:06.hander. Bedene likes to be positioned on the left-hand side of

:34:07. > :34:33.the court, waiting for the forehand. He is having to play some service

:34:34. > :34:37.here, Bedene. Only fractionally more than 70 miles an hour. I'm sure he

:34:38. > :34:42.said Ivo Karlovic when did you last serve a ball at 70 miles an hour...

:34:43. > :34:54.He would say, when I was 12. So it's a very different challenge for

:34:55. > :35:01.Bedene. At the moment it's one that's proving beyond him in the

:35:02. > :35:07.second set. But equally, every time Dzumhur comes out to serve, you feel

:35:08. > :35:11.there is the possibility of a break, it's just that Bedene mustn't

:35:12. > :35:16.needlessly give points away. And certainly, although he is 5-2 down

:35:17. > :35:22.in this set, Bedene does look like the better version of the kind of

:35:23. > :35:26.similar players, but better in every department. He has a better serve

:35:27. > :35:32.and more damaging forehand, he looks like he's more consistent, it's just

:35:33. > :35:34.a question of working out what's the best way to kind of deploy that on

:35:35. > :35:44.the court. Is this the kind of game, as well,

:35:45. > :35:53.and we can see by the way if you're wondering, all those midges flying

:35:54. > :35:56.round in front of Bedene, this epidemic of flying ants we have at

:35:57. > :36:01.Wimbledon. You can see them flying across the TV screen now, hundreds

:36:02. > :36:06.and hundreds and hundreds of them, and also crawling across the

:36:07. > :36:15.perfectly striped court, as well. But there's a load more there, you

:36:16. > :36:20.can see them. Just as Dzumhur walks out to the court, it's amazing. Its

:36:21. > :36:26.national flying and day-to-day. I'm sure you had that in your diary!

:36:27. > :36:31.Anyway, Bedene needs to hold onto his serve here and see what he can

:36:32. > :36:34.do on the Bosnian's the next time round. The aces have dried up from

:36:35. > :37:23.Bedene, needs one more two now. Challenging a call on the right

:37:24. > :37:29.service line, the ball was called in. Hawk-Eye has been snoozing in

:37:30. > :37:37.the sun for the last 15 minutes but called into action. CHUCKLES

:37:38. > :37:42.And thinking, what on earth are you talking about here?

:37:43. > :38:12.That was the kind of rally that Bedene was in complete control of

:38:13. > :38:17.that rally and yet he somehow lost the point. He just hesitated, he

:38:18. > :38:24.should have been in at the net after that shot.

:38:25. > :38:30.Dzumhur is cursing the fact he didn't make the move for that,

:38:31. > :38:34.because there was nobody at home. If he somehow managed to get that ball

:38:35. > :38:39.back into court, that was a guaranteed point for him. You can

:38:40. > :38:42.see Bedene well out of position. The point before, we often called that

:38:43. > :38:48.no man's land, for anyone who plays, who's watching, the coaches tell

:38:49. > :39:04.them, stay out of no man's land at all costs. The best players do it.

:39:05. > :39:09.Bedene's serve lacking the bite it had a few days ago. Maybe that's

:39:10. > :39:14.partly because, not just because of the conditions, because it is very

:39:15. > :39:17.warm, in the upper 20s, but also the effort of that victory Karlovic,

:39:18. > :39:38.mental and physical. And the unforced errors count

:39:39. > :39:44.continues to rise. 14 from Bedene, just five from his Bosnian opponent.

:39:45. > :39:55.And all too often they have been at key moments, like that. Just to give

:39:56. > :39:56.him some breathing space. UMPIRE: Mr Bedene is challenging the call, the

:39:57. > :40:11.right centre service line. Well... Bedene holds, and he needed that.

:40:12. > :40:46.But he needs this one more. Let's see if his intensity increases

:40:47. > :40:52.in this game. We know he's going to get into almost every single point

:40:53. > :40:55.on the Dzumhur serve. Finding a way to find out those loose errors that

:40:56. > :41:21.have been evident in the last 25-30 minutes.

:41:22. > :41:28.And we mentioned earlier, there's a lot more at stake for Bedene than

:41:29. > :41:32.just this match, the third-round tie against whoever it may be, puts him

:41:33. > :41:39.in the sporting spotlight, which is where he wants to be an needs to be.

:41:40. > :41:44.If he's going to create a rapport with the British sporting public.

:41:45. > :41:46.And this is one of those matches, the odds would favour him. He needs

:41:47. > :42:02.to win this game. But... This second set has drifted away.

:42:03. > :42:04.Rather too tamely for the liking of Bedene, I suspect. So we are all

:42:05. > :42:18.square. It is the best of three now. So do

:42:19. > :42:24.we start from scratch, or has anybody got momentum at the moment?

:42:25. > :42:31.I definitely think Bedene has to start from scratch here. I mean,

:42:32. > :42:37.these are the numbers. You can look at it in isolation. 79% first serve

:42:38. > :42:43.the Dzumhur is not a surprise, given the Paisley are talking about.

:42:44. > :42:46.Interesting for Bedene winning 18% of the points behind his second

:42:47. > :42:51.serve. That is probably the reason he was broken so many times in fact

:42:52. > :42:55.set. I was just trying to put myself in his shoes, in terms of mentally

:42:56. > :42:59.how he would have prepared for the Karlovic match. He would have been

:43:00. > :43:02.very focused on clear, in terms of how big a challenge that was going

:43:03. > :43:07.to beat and the match itself would have taken a lot of out of him. That

:43:08. > :43:11.match was exactly what you said it was going to be. In advance you

:43:12. > :43:15.would say he would serve massive big serves, somehow get the ball back in

:43:16. > :43:20.core and see where we are. If I hold my serve, I have a chance. A simple

:43:21. > :43:24.game plan and. And he did an amazing job of going five sets without being

:43:25. > :43:28.broken. With a guy serving like that down the other end, an amazing

:43:29. > :43:34.effort. Fast forward into this match, someone he knows unbelievably

:43:35. > :43:36.well, knows he will be comfortable and not served out the court,

:43:37. > :43:40.there's all sorts of potential banana skins to have a potential let

:43:41. > :43:44.down, which he did well in the first set but the second set has been a

:43:45. > :43:48.let down. It is now a question for him, he has to snap out of that.

:43:49. > :43:53.This is as good a chance as he is going to get in the second round of

:43:54. > :43:57.a Grand Slam. Again, if you're the student of body language, you'd say

:43:58. > :44:01.he doesn't seem to have a huge amount of energy. There is a bit of

:44:02. > :44:07.bumps lacking at the moment in his meaner. -- a bit of oomf lacking. We

:44:08. > :44:33.are one a piece in sets. That was not a great volley from the

:44:34. > :44:46.Bosnian. If I was Bedene now, every single

:44:47. > :44:50.time Dzumhur had a drop volley, I would be moving two or three steps

:44:51. > :44:51.forward. This first volley looks like it's a drop shot every single

:44:52. > :45:36.time. UMPIRE: The call is challenged on

:45:37. > :45:43.the right baseline. The ball was called in. The ball might have

:45:44. > :45:53.patched the baseline, which might be why it's trajectory was a bit odd.

:45:54. > :46:14.UMPIRE: Mr Bedene has two challenges remaining.

:46:15. > :46:58.Back to the consistent Bedene of the first set.

:46:59. > :47:06.That was more of an inside out backhand. Often talk about inside

:47:07. > :47:08.out forehands, but great use of the spin on the ball to move that away

:47:09. > :47:35.from Bedene. Not wholly convincing, but... He's

:47:36. > :47:41.got his nose in front. And it's also another chance for a lot of the

:47:42. > :47:45.British sporting public and tennis public to know who Aljaz Bedene is

:47:46. > :47:48.and to say his name correctly, by the way. A lot of people in the

:47:49. > :47:56.queue, who are you going to watch, they said Bed-een play, because that

:47:57. > :48:01.is how you would automatically say it. Over the last 18 months he's

:48:02. > :48:03.been asked repeatedly, how exactly do we say your name? It's Aljaz

:48:04. > :48:15.Bedene. That's a loose shot at the start of

:48:16. > :48:21.this first service game from the Bosnian. I was doing Dominic Thiem's

:48:22. > :48:27.match on number one Court last night and there was intermittent laughter

:48:28. > :48:32.from one corner of the crowd. That is great. He said he wouldn't serve

:48:33. > :48:36.a single ace in the whole match, and there we are, at 93 miles an hour,

:48:37. > :48:41.but drifting and drifting and drifting further away.

:48:42. > :48:46.And as I was walking out of number one Court, this guy came up to me.

:48:47. > :48:50.And said, did you hear all the laughter? I said, yeah, what was

:48:51. > :49:04.that all about? He said, I will tell you.

:49:05. > :49:13.He said because none of us really knew who to support in that game,

:49:14. > :49:16.and then one person shouted, "Come on Popsicle!" And we kept saying

:49:17. > :49:25.that throughout the whole match, and it kept us amused.

:49:26. > :49:32.Dzumhur berating himself of that lack of touch there, but Bedene is

:49:33. > :49:37.very swift off the mark. And he's got 30-30 here, we could

:49:38. > :50:24.point. -- big point. We talked about the speed of the

:50:25. > :50:28.Dzumhur serve, that 170 miles an hour, but Bedene not moving up to

:50:29. > :50:34.the ball at all, still 3-5 feet behind the baseline. With the ball

:50:35. > :50:38.coming at him that slowly, as well, for a club player that is sort of

:50:39. > :50:41.decent pace of ball, but at this level, the ball has almost stopped

:50:42. > :50:45.before he actually hits it. It puts all be pressure on him, to try and

:50:46. > :50:50.reenergise the ball on the way back over the net. And if you are still

:50:51. > :50:53.that far behind the baseline, the chances are that ball is going to be

:50:54. > :51:02.below the height of the net, so you have two hit it up.

:51:03. > :51:07.You just feel, actually, a lot of points are being lost here by

:51:08. > :51:13.Bedene, they're just going one after the other after the other in a

:51:14. > :51:15.roller-coaster. The last three points have all been lost to kind of

:51:16. > :51:29.nothing shots. Well, maybe that's a rally that will

:51:30. > :52:22.energise Bedene. And the feel of the sea aster that

:52:23. > :52:25.has kind of settled on this game, maybe this will just lift it a bit.

:52:26. > :53:01.Because he had to chase for that. Backhand down the line winner,

:53:02. > :53:05.again. This has definitely been the shot that's caught the eye from

:53:06. > :53:10.Dzumhur's point of view. This is probably the pick of the bunch.

:53:11. > :53:15.Certainly the hardest backhand he's hit. I just wonder if he can, from

:53:16. > :53:33.his point of view, look for a way to use that shot a little more often.

:53:34. > :53:40.These are nervous times for Aljaz Bedene. He's playing like a man

:53:41. > :53:46.whose very hesitant, when you would expect him to be the exact opposite

:53:47. > :53:49.after his victory against Karlovic a few days ago. Here is a break point

:53:50. > :54:25.for the Bosnian. Early break in the third set for the

:54:26. > :54:33.Bosnian. And, at the moment, Bedene seems to have... He's not getting

:54:34. > :54:42.through the match at the moment. When you think he was 6-3, 1-0

:54:43. > :54:47.serving, Dzumhur was still chuntering away to someone in his

:54:48. > :54:53.box, was all over the place, apart from actually in the match. It's

:54:54. > :54:58.hard to put your finger on why it's turned so dramatically. To me it

:54:59. > :55:03.looks like a combination of almost... Not an exact foot off the

:55:04. > :55:06.pedal from Bedene, but I think mentally he has been a bit loose.

:55:07. > :55:11.Quite a few errors coming in. There is definitely more of variety from

:55:12. > :55:16.Dzumhur. The biggest thing about his game now is he is throwing in quite

:55:17. > :55:22.a few forays to the net and I think that is taking a bit of Bedene's

:55:23. > :55:27.time away, which is adding to his discomfort. There is the Bedene

:55:28. > :55:32.team, just a few rows above them is the Great Britain Davis Cup captain,

:55:33. > :55:37.Leon Smith, watching this. Perhaps Bedene could do with Leon Smith down

:55:38. > :55:41.by the umpire's chair at the changeovers saying, come on mate,

:55:42. > :55:45.galvanise us. This game is very winnable. When you think of bout all

:55:46. > :55:49.the players of the world you could be playing in the second round of a

:55:50. > :55:59.Grand Slam, this is just the kind of guy you want to be up against.

:56:00. > :56:10.A few more like that, please. A big forehand, a big serve. A big fist

:56:11. > :56:20.pump, it feels like something, just inject a bit of energy.

:56:21. > :56:31.I'm not suggesting for a moment that Leon Smith is...

:56:32. > :56:44.What is to stop anyone texting a message to a player and a player

:56:45. > :56:53.looking at his phone at the change of ends? Right the umpire should be

:56:54. > :57:06.on top of that. A couple of unforced errors from the Bosnian.

:57:07. > :57:12.You get a text message or e-mail on your watch these days.

:57:13. > :57:23.It's a hard one to police now, isn't it? Good old-fashioned notebooks...

:57:24. > :57:32.That's a horrible forehand. That was a horrible game all round from

:57:33. > :57:35.Dzumhur. The crowd are suddenly getting into this and saying to

:57:36. > :57:48.Aljaz Bedene, "Come on!" It is very sophisticated now, is in

:57:49. > :57:50.it? The old days if if I scratch my right nostril, go to the backhand,

:57:51. > :59:09.those days are outmoded now. And that shout you heard, which you

:59:10. > :59:13.might have thought would have been from Bedene because of that error,

:59:14. > :59:18.was actually from the man in your picture, Dzumhur. Who was annoyed

:59:19. > :59:25.about something, but I'm not altogether clear what.

:59:26. > :59:34.Well, the ace is back. After a long absence, that is ace number seven

:59:35. > :59:58.for Bedene. That's just about the most

:59:59. > :00:13.convincing hold Bedene has had for a set and a half.

:00:14. > :00:20.This is a funny old game. In five minutes he has gone from not looking

:00:21. > :00:28.down and out, but looking down, and now being in control. I know this

:00:29. > :00:34.from playing myself when my serve was not a weapon that I had, but

:00:35. > :00:38.when I got a lead in an effort to drive home and advantage where the

:00:39. > :00:42.top players are so good at front running, there can be a tendency to

:00:43. > :00:47.over press on your service game because you do not have a few points

:00:48. > :00:53.where there are a couple of big points and when the rally starts you

:00:54. > :00:58.overhit and you rush to the net more quickly to press the advantage. In

:00:59. > :01:02.that last game from Dzumhur's point of view it looked like that, I have

:01:03. > :01:12.to push on, but I do not have the weaponry to do it. A lot of unforced

:01:13. > :01:19.errors from both players in this match so far. But bit by bit they

:01:20. > :01:26.are levelling each other out which is why we find ourselves effectively

:01:27. > :02:13.at even Stevens, albeit with Bedene leading in this set.

:02:14. > :02:43.Did he not commit to that shot completely?

:02:44. > :02:54.That was much better. This is one of the best point we have seen from

:02:55. > :02:59.Bedene since the first set, using all the angles of the court. That is

:03:00. > :03:07.what we expect to see from him, not so much the pace, but moving his

:03:08. > :03:16.opponent around. That would be classed as an outburst of emotion

:03:17. > :03:21.from Bedene! A swinging serve from the Bosnian. Barely any pace. Just

:03:22. > :04:31.taking Bedene so far out of court. Bedene might have fancied that game.

:04:32. > :04:37.He might have seen it as a shift in power taking place. But it did not.

:04:38. > :04:41.We are starting to get to the stage in this match where a break of serve

:04:42. > :04:44.here and there could make the difference. It is why Bedene needs

:04:45. > :05:23.some big first serves like that. An observation which is unusual on a

:05:24. > :05:25.day like today, given how hot and sunny it is, but neither player are

:05:26. > :05:51.wearing a cap. Good point. A good angle from Bedene. That is

:05:52. > :05:58.the difficulty with dealing with the grass court, the grass almost kills

:05:59. > :06:02.the ball. As well as moving wide, Dzumhur had to move forward, which

:06:03. > :06:34.he did not do. Some of these exchanges you can tell

:06:35. > :06:42.that they know each other so well. Dzumhur was waiting with his

:06:43. > :06:49.backhand for that. I have seen it too many times, my friend! A bit of

:06:50. > :06:54.anxiety on the Bedene serve. But that was a beautiful volley. That is

:06:55. > :07:01.just about the best shot he has played today. Possibly one of the

:07:02. > :07:05.only serve and volley is of the match so far. What a time to do it.

:07:06. > :07:18.That was not an easy volley. No angle to work with Renee. -- really.

:07:19. > :07:34.Another outburst of emotion! Positively animated now. That was a

:07:35. > :07:40.big cold. It really was. Even when you are a seasoned campaigner, does

:07:41. > :07:46.it feel different at 3-4 than it does at 1-2. ? Is a break of serve

:07:47. > :07:54.substantially more important now than it was earlier? Yes,

:07:55. > :08:01.definitely, that is the art of matchplay. You hear phrases like the

:08:02. > :08:08.top players always peeking at the business end of the set. Whatever

:08:09. > :08:14.that is, certainly on a grass court, the advantage is serving first and

:08:15. > :08:23.being ahead on the scoreboard. I think it is relevant if you have a

:08:24. > :08:29.very close match. Andy Murray will be in action later on on the Centre

:08:30. > :08:34.Court. He is one of those players where it gets to 4-4 and then he

:08:35. > :08:56.breaks. Aljaz Bedene would like a break of

:08:57. > :09:01.serve here. 4-3 to the good. As we have said repeatedly, he will get

:09:02. > :09:19.these returns back, it is a question of what happens after that?

:09:20. > :09:25.I wonder if Dzumhur has asked for some medical treatment. He asked the

:09:26. > :09:29.umpire to make a phone call, which he has done. There is a double fault

:09:30. > :10:07.to start this game. That is the first one of those that

:10:08. > :10:48.he has made a pig's year of in quite a while.

:10:49. > :10:59.A big point. You sense that. You really do. There is a sense that

:11:00. > :11:07.they both felt it as well. Very nervy. You could feel the tension in

:11:08. > :11:11.the stadium during that point. You are two break points. Which becomes

:11:12. > :11:38.one very quickly. Flying off the outside of his

:11:39. > :11:47.racket, the Bosnian. He thought of throwing them into the sky and then

:11:48. > :11:51.thought better of it. And it happened and so it came to pass.

:11:52. > :11:55.That question you asked, that backhand, how many times have we

:11:56. > :12:07.seen him make that backhand down the line? Now the opportunity for the

:12:08. > :12:13.British number three to take a 3-1 lead. A few more like that will do

:12:14. > :14:03.it. And Aljaz Bedene is a lot happier

:14:04. > :14:19.now than he was a few minutes ago. 2-1. SUE BARKER: And so Bedene takes

:14:20. > :14:25.the third set. Let's update you with what is happening elsewhere. Over on

:14:26. > :14:39.Centre Court it is now one set all. Donna Vekic took the second set. A

:14:40. > :14:45.real battle on her hands for Johanna Konta. You can see that now on BBC

:14:46. > :14:47.One. And on Court Number One Kei Nishikori has got a battle on his

:14:48. > :14:51.hand. He has dropped the second set, losing the time break 9-7. That is

:14:52. > :14:58.our featured match on the red button. Aljaz Bedene, the winner of

:14:59. > :15:17.that match will play the winner of this one. This is Gilles Muller in

:15:18. > :15:17.your picture, he is up against Lukas Rosol. He put out Rafael Nadal a few

:15:18. > :15:18.years ago. Seven games all and juice in the fifth and final set. It has

:15:19. > :15:26.been going on for over two and a half hours. One result, Jo-Wilfried

:15:27. > :15:33.Tsonga is through to the next round. He beat the qualifier from Italy,

:15:34. > :15:41.Simone Bolelli. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been twice a semifinalist here.

:15:42. > :15:47.He is through to the third round. We know he is through to face Sam

:15:48. > :15:57.Querrey, because here he is, he has come through in four sets. He is

:15:58. > :16:02.seeded 24 at these championships and he is through to round three, so it

:16:03. > :16:08.will be Sam Querrey against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next

:16:09. > :16:17.round. That we go now to court number three. JOHN INVERDALE: We

:16:18. > :16:22.have seen the statistics for the third set and Jamie Baker was making

:16:23. > :16:26.the comment that he had not actually seen a differential between the

:16:27. > :16:32.first serve points one and the second serve points one ever so

:16:33. > :16:37.remarkable as Bedene's statistics because they were. 100% points one

:16:38. > :16:42.on first serve and only nine points one on second serve. As a player I

:16:43. > :16:46.am sure he probably was not aware that it was that extreme, but he

:16:47. > :16:50.must have felt as the set was going on that he was doing really well,

:16:51. > :16:54.but the pressure when he missed the second serve, you must have been

:16:55. > :16:59.aware he was not having the influence and the point that he

:17:00. > :17:05.would have liked. Was he using the second serve to put the ball in play

:17:06. > :17:07.and we will see what happens after that? He would not be making a

:17:08. > :17:12.conscious decision to do anything differently than he did in the first

:17:13. > :17:18.couple of sets, but whether he was a little tentative, we talked about

:17:19. > :17:27.him being more attacking in the last 35 or 40 minutes, Dzumhur, so those

:17:28. > :17:33.two things could have had an impact. We are waiting for two players

:17:34. > :17:39.because Bedene went off court at the end of that set. The British Davis

:17:40. > :17:43.Cup captain Leon Smith is in the crowd and when he looks at the

:17:44. > :17:48.statistics after this game, that is something he will say to Aljaz

:17:49. > :17:54.Bedene. That is a differential that is ridiculous. I think he is being

:17:55. > :17:58.attacked by those flying ants that is bedevilling the whole of

:17:59. > :18:08.Wimbledon this year. He did not look too impressed, did he?! The number

:18:09. > :18:13.of flying ants at Wimbledon may have diminished by one in the last few

:18:14. > :18:17.seconds! The only thing you can say for sure is whoever they play in the

:18:18. > :18:23.next round will be very tired because Lukas Rosol and Gilles

:18:24. > :18:30.Muller are still playing after hours and hours and they are into a fifth

:18:31. > :18:34.set. They will be tired on Friday. If Bedene could win this in four,

:18:35. > :18:36.this might be a golden opportunity for the British number three at

:18:37. > :19:01.Wimbledon this year. That was a wild shot from the

:19:02. > :19:05.Bosnian. It is that old saying, just make your opponent play one more

:19:06. > :19:10.shot. It is so relevant at whatever level of the game you are playing.

:19:11. > :19:20.You sense if Dzumhur got broken here... Bedene might run away with

:19:21. > :19:33.this. He is not a happy bunny at the moment.

:19:34. > :19:47.And his mood will not be helped by a shot like that.

:19:48. > :20:03.Four errors, one after the other from the racket of the Bosnian.

:20:04. > :20:09.Bedene is in charge now. That was a gimme start for the British number

:20:10. > :20:13.three. It was strange from the Bosnian. He went through patches

:20:14. > :20:17.where he looked so solid, he had the upper hand. To start a set like

:20:18. > :20:27.that, you would think, I have got the chance to start and keep ahead

:20:28. > :20:34.on the scoreboard. It was an absolute giveaway. That is what

:20:35. > :21:24.happened at the start of the second set and then Bedene conceded the

:21:25. > :21:32.it is worth repeating what we said at the outset. These two are the

:21:33. > :21:40.best of mates. They spend a lot of time together on the tour. And that

:21:41. > :22:05.has perhaps taken a bit of the banks and the venom out of this match.

:22:06. > :22:13.The Bosnian's shoulders are starting to droop now. Bedene can surely see

:22:14. > :23:08.his chance. So effective against Ivo Karlovic on

:23:09. > :23:15.Monday. Less so today, but that ace puts him in control in this fourth

:23:16. > :23:22.set. That is what he had not managed to do in previous sets, drive home

:23:23. > :23:24.the early advantage. He will be looking to see if he can get a

:23:25. > :24:01.double break here. Mistake after mistake now from the

:24:02. > :24:28.Bosnian. Aljaz Bedene was quick, but the

:24:29. > :24:33.options open to him were limited. He was seriously quick up to the drop

:24:34. > :24:37.shot, but the risk you have going crosscourt is you open up the court.

:24:38. > :24:57.It has to be a winner if you go crosscourt.

:24:58. > :25:09.That was a beautifully struck ball, but agonisingly close. Again it is

:25:10. > :25:15.one of these games where you think I could break here and then it is 3-0

:25:16. > :25:18.and then it is almost done. There is another flying ant, this time down

:25:19. > :25:35.the back of Dzumhur's shirt. This would be a good hold for the

:25:36. > :25:57.Bosnian. It really would. That went just long but from either

:25:58. > :26:05.player's point of view they are both getting chances to break. If you can

:26:06. > :26:23.stay in sight in this fourth set, you never know what can happen.

:26:24. > :26:30.You cannot see into our commentary box, but Jamie was pushing Aljaz

:26:31. > :26:33.Bedene into the net there. You wanted him to get the finishing

:26:34. > :26:52.touch. Like that. Perfect execution, he saw

:26:53. > :26:56.the open face from Bedene. He really played that with his feet. He never

:26:57. > :27:59.stopped, he ran all the way through the ball.

:28:00. > :28:11.He will not be very pleased with that. But he still has a break.

:28:12. > :28:18.Let's talk about that beautifully struck volley from Dzumhur in that

:28:19. > :28:22.last game. He was at pace. It is about getting balance and core and

:28:23. > :28:27.everything else and going through the ball and this is a fantastic

:28:28. > :28:32.example of how to do it. At any level the tendency is when you see

:28:33. > :28:38.your opponent in so much trouble, you think, OK, the ball is coming

:28:39. > :28:42.slowly, it is high, I have got this point in the bag and you stop moving

:28:43. > :28:47.and you think it is too easy. But his feet never stop. He is still

:28:48. > :28:53.going after the ball has bounced twice. It means he can contact the

:28:54. > :28:57.ball at the highest possible point and it makes playing the ball easier

:28:58. > :29:05.with every single step that he takes. But the balance at the moment

:29:06. > :29:09.of contact is key. Definitely, it is not a case of running into it like a

:29:10. > :29:19.headless chicken. It is a balanced approach. And he is still in this

:29:20. > :29:23.match, Dzumhur. That was a lackadaisical game by Bedene. Even

:29:24. > :29:29.though he has a break, he has not been serving with the authority and

:29:30. > :29:34.the panache that he did against Ivo Karlovic a couple of days ago. He is

:29:35. > :29:37.vulnerable on serve as well, so this is an interesting stage in this

:29:38. > :30:17.match. Until that. I'm not sure whether the frustration

:30:18. > :30:22.is with the choice of shot or the execution.

:30:23. > :31:13.It is true of so many players, but Bedene's game is different when his

:31:14. > :31:31.first serve is that effective and convincing.

:31:32. > :32:18.That is well played. So many times in this match, we have seen examples

:32:19. > :33:12.of how good the movement is of Aljaz Bedene.

:33:13. > :33:22.That's a good shot. We have been used to seeing lots of winners in

:33:23. > :33:24.this match down the line from the Bosnian's backhand, but not too many

:33:25. > :33:41.crosscourt. And a simple hold for Dzumhur as

:33:42. > :33:47.well. This game is kind of meandering. Meandering towards a

:33:48. > :33:51.conclusion, but you feel that because it is meandering, nobody

:33:52. > :33:56.really has seized it by the scruff of the neck, so actually, it could

:33:57. > :34:00.still go any way. The pattern in the first three sets, there is no way

:34:01. > :34:08.that Bedene can be taking this one for granted at all. There is a

:34:09. > :34:12.pattern in terms of how he is winning points on his service game,

:34:13. > :34:16.just to highlight the point you make. When he gets his first serve

:34:17. > :34:21.in, he is winning eight out of ten point, and when he doesn't, he is

:34:22. > :34:27.losing seven out of ten. He won't be aware of the exact numbers, but he

:34:28. > :34:37.will be aware of how important the first serve is. And that of his

:34:38. > :34:43.opponent. Certainly. 11 aces from Bedene in this match today, just a

:34:44. > :34:52.solitary one from the Bosnian. That was an extraordinary second serve

:34:53. > :34:59.kicker out to the advantage card that almost disappeared into the

:35:00. > :35:05.first row of the stands. -- out of the advantage court. The man from

:35:06. > :35:18.Sarajevo will still think he is in this match. And Bedene has a new

:35:19. > :35:25.racket to serve here. Is that just because, why not? Actually, on a hot

:35:26. > :35:29.day like today, it is perfectly legitimate that the tension is

:35:30. > :35:34.loosening off as the day goes on, and I think that having a slightly

:35:35. > :35:37.tighter racket will allow him to get through the ball a bit more, stay

:35:38. > :36:23.aggressive on the contact. More consistent hitting from Bedene.

:36:24. > :36:27.Against this man, he doesn't need to go for the winner on the first shot

:36:28. > :36:33.of the rally, does he? That is not his game, either. You can see the

:36:34. > :36:40.damage he can do by using the angles of the court. And with a first serve

:36:41. > :36:50.like that -- 125 five miles per hour.

:36:51. > :37:21.-- and with a first serve like that - 125 mph.

:37:22. > :37:26.And there is another second serve point for Bedene that he doesn't

:37:27. > :37:47.win. This is nervy stuff, actually. That is how you calm those nerves,

:37:48. > :38:23.though. Ace number 12. 1-2 from the British number three,

:38:24. > :38:29.keeps his nose ahead. A bit of extra pace on that forehand, followed by a

:38:30. > :38:33.big look up to his team in the box, as if to say, come on, one more

:38:34. > :39:07.push. A decisive start to the game from

:39:08. > :39:16.the Bosnian. There was a shout from the crowd of, come on, Ali. What do

:39:17. > :39:24.the players on the tour call him? Is it Ali, Aljaz? He missed it. I think

:39:25. > :39:56.they call him Aljaz. He made hard work of that, but maybe

:39:57. > :40:55.the ball did just jump up, or maybe he was in the wrong place. Anyway...

:40:56. > :41:04.UMPIRE: New balls, please. A slightly tame game from Bedene

:41:05. > :41:09.there. I suppose he is consoled by the fact that he does have the break

:41:10. > :41:12.of serve in this fourth set. And it is worth going back 48 hours and

:41:13. > :41:17.saying that the whole atmosphere and ambience of this game, and the level

:41:18. > :41:23.of the game, and the pressure and noise, and the intensity, is so

:41:24. > :41:27.different that, in a sense, you allow yourself to be consumed by the

:41:28. > :41:32.atmosphere around you, and it kind of feels that is where he is today.

:41:33. > :41:38.That is one of the challenges for an individual athlete, definitely for a

:41:39. > :41:44.tennis player when they are playing in front of an arena, is, you think

:41:45. > :41:48.about the things you can't control as an individual. But no matter how

:41:49. > :41:53.much you talk about that, there is no question, the energy of a crowded

:41:54. > :41:59.something that plays a massive part. The biggest thing now for Bedene, I

:42:00. > :42:04.think, is keeping up his intensity on every single point, not dropping

:42:05. > :42:09.on the Dzumhur service games, because that can spill over into his

:42:10. > :42:15.service games, which obviously, he doesn't want. It is a hot old Bay on

:42:16. > :42:18.Court number three, and there is a slightly dormant atmosphere, and one

:42:19. > :42:23.or two people are going to be rushing off to get some sort of

:42:24. > :42:31.hydration afterwards, because this is hot stuff for them watching. And

:42:32. > :42:38.Aljaz Bedene needs eight more points, three or foul-mac aces, and

:42:39. > :43:05.he will be done. -- three or four aces.

:43:06. > :44:23.Well, better big hitting from Bedene, and this was an opponent on

:44:24. > :44:31.the canvas after that. But there was a lot more force in those ground

:44:32. > :44:32.shots from Bedene. That was a gallant effort to get his racket

:44:33. > :45:10.onto that in the end. I was just thinking how much Bedene

:45:11. > :45:13.had upped the ante in this game. And then he throws one like that, as he

:45:14. > :45:15.has a few times in this match. The crowd are saying to him, come on,

:45:16. > :45:48.get this done. Well... UMPIRE: McCall is

:45:49. > :45:56.challenged. The ball was called out. I think they may be replaying this

:45:57. > :46:05.one. I am not sure about this one. -- the call is challenged. Dzumhur

:46:06. > :46:08.bashes a ball down the other end in a measure of disgust, because that

:46:09. > :46:13.was quite an aggressive back and that put him in a decent position in

:46:14. > :46:33.the rally. Nonetheless, it is still game point for Bedene.

:46:34. > :46:58.Well, all that matters is the score. And that is what it is. It basically

:46:59. > :47:02.means this is the last role of the dice for Dzumhur from Bosnia. He

:47:03. > :47:07.needs to hold his serve here or Aljaz Bedene will be through to the

:47:08. > :47:38.next round, for the second time in his career.

:47:39. > :47:45.That was the smartest pick-up of a drop shot we have seen today, just

:47:46. > :47:46.pushing it down the line, plays for position and then being rewarded

:47:47. > :48:10.with a smash. That is the way to do it. The

:48:11. > :48:14.British number three lent his shirt and shorts to Damir Dzumhur on

:48:15. > :48:26.Monday for his first round match so that he could win that and set up

:48:27. > :48:34.this tie today. But today, he has shown who wears the trousers in this

:48:35. > :48:40.relationship. The British number three is through to a third round

:48:41. > :48:49.confrontation with Gilles Muller, a big server. But today, on Court

:48:50. > :49:03.number three, the British number three was very much the top dog. I

:49:04. > :49:06.think we have to be brutally honest, Jamie, and say it wasn't the

:49:07. > :49:09.greatest game of tennis we have ever seen, or that this Court has ever

:49:10. > :49:14.had played upon it, but you can only beat who is in front of you, and all

:49:15. > :49:19.those other cliches, and he is into the next round. Bedene, quite

:49:20. > :49:23.rightly, will be delighted to get through that. I don't think he will

:49:24. > :49:28.say it was the best performance of his career, or even this year, but

:49:29. > :49:34.having come back from an amazing win in the first round, to bounce back,

:49:35. > :49:41.any result today that got a win is a job well done, in my view. Against

:49:42. > :49:44.Gilles Muller, it is almost like going back to Monday and playing Ivo

:49:45. > :49:48.Karlovic again, another big server. And he will have to serve better

:49:49. > :49:56.against Miller to have a chance of winning. It will be a tough match.

:49:57. > :49:59.Gilles Muller is one of the big servers on the tour. I watched his

:50:00. > :50:21.first match and he was very in control of his game.

:50:22. > :50:31.Ali as -- Aljaz is having a chat with us at courtside.

:50:32. > :50:40.Many congratulations. What is your reaction to that win? I am a little

:50:41. > :50:46.tired. I was playing quite solid. He gave me a few easy games, which

:50:47. > :50:50.helped, so I am happy. How are you enjoying getting this support? I

:50:51. > :50:55.played my first match on this Court, and they are amazing. I have to

:50:56. > :50:59.thank them, because I think that without them I couldn't have won the

:51:00. > :51:03.first match or this one. Thanks a lot. That equalled your best Grand

:51:04. > :51:09.Slam performance, and it is your best at Wimbledon. You have Gilles

:51:10. > :51:17.Muller next, how far can you go? I played him a few weeks ago. He loves

:51:18. > :51:22.grass. He is a lefty with a big serve. I will fight and see what

:51:23. > :51:30.happens. Fantastic stuff. Well done so far. Cheers. SUE BARKER: Very

:51:31. > :51:35.well done indeed, coming through this match. He had an immense five

:51:36. > :51:38.set match in the first round. Another big server awaits him in

:51:39. > :51:46.round three. Aljaz Bedene is through. Meanwhile, on Centre Court,

:51:47. > :51:50.Jo Konta is involved in an immense battle. You can see it is one set

:51:51. > :51:58.all will stop no tie-break, and she is down 0-30 on her serve, the

:51:59. > :52:03.Centre Court crowd trying to GE her up. These are important moments in

:52:04. > :52:10.this match. That match is live on BBC One. We are going to take you

:52:11. > :52:24.over to Court Number One to see Kei Nishikori against Sergiy Stakhovsky.

:52:25. > :52:34.Let's join our commentators. Peter Fleming is alongside Ronald

:52:35. > :52:40.McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: Sergiy Stakhovsky holding serve in this

:52:41. > :52:51.fourth set. Two hours and 40 minutes we have been on court now. It has

:52:52. > :52:58.been an intense, keenly contested affair during this second round

:52:59. > :53:03.match. It has been. It has been a disappointing performance from

:53:04. > :53:10.Nishikori, not really playing the sort of tennis we might expect from

:53:11. > :53:16.him. But he has done what he does so well. He has fought, he has put the

:53:17. > :53:22.ball back into play, he has run, and he has come up with enough winners

:53:23. > :53:29.to put himself in a pretty good position. He is up to- one in sets,

:53:30. > :53:38.on serve in the fourth. He has the best record of all time in five set

:53:39. > :53:45.matches. Should this go the distance, Nishikori would have to

:53:46. > :53:54.remain the favourite. But it has been hard work.

:53:55. > :53:57.Stakhovsky has lost the only five set match he has contested at

:53:58. > :54:43.Wimbledon. Nishikori has relied on the

:54:44. > :54:48.forehand. The backhand has been surprisingly suspect. He has made a

:54:49. > :55:03.lot of unforced errors of that site, which is unlike him. -- off that

:55:04. > :55:12.side. The previous ground strokes had terrific depth. Now the winners

:55:13. > :55:20.from the racket of Nishikori just creeping ahead of the unforced

:55:21. > :56:03.errors as this match progresses. A solid hold of serve. 3-3.

:56:04. > :56:09.Eighth ace of the match for Stakhovsky. He leads Nishikori by

:56:10. > :57:07.two in that statistical category. Nishikori just knocking himself on

:57:08. > :57:24.the headband there. Not executed as he would have liked.

:57:25. > :57:29.Nishikori is really struggling against the first serve of

:57:30. > :57:35.Stakhovsky. In fact, he has only won one of 13 points in this set when

:57:36. > :58:03.the Ukrainian has put his first serve in play.

:58:04. > :58:08.So, glorious conditions here in south-west London. Of course, the

:58:09. > :58:15.reconfiguration of Court Number One means that there is very little

:58:16. > :58:25.shade. Michael Chang, French Open champion from 1989, part of

:58:26. > :58:31.Nishikori's coaching squad... The spectators here have been milling in

:58:32. > :58:35.and out. There have been a couple of comfort breaks at the end of

:58:36. > :58:43.previous sets. Those who have stayed throughout, we have been on court

:58:44. > :58:47.for two hours and 45 minutes now, witnessed a really enthralling

:58:48. > :58:54.encounter. And they have been a significant feature of this match -

:58:55. > :58:59.be flying ants. It looks like this one has shed its wings, so no longer

:59:00. > :59:09.a sliding and. It is not a long life, but I'm sure it's a happy one!

:59:10. > :59:12.So, we remain on serve in the fourth set, eighth game, Nishikori to

:59:13. > :59:41.serve, 3-4, leading 2-1 in sets. That will perhaps go down as another

:59:42. > :59:46.unforced error from the backhand. That would be harsh, but he hasn't

:59:47. > :00:03.timed that wing very well at all today.

:00:04. > :00:16.A terrific winner from Stakhovsky. The alarm bells will be ringing now.

:00:17. > :00:17.Stakhovsky doing a nice job of stepping up onto the baseline to

:00:18. > :00:31.attack this one. He gets his first points on the

:00:32. > :01:00.board in this service game. 103 mph down the centreline. The

:01:01. > :01:34.seventh ace of the match for Nishikori.

:01:35. > :01:48.Oh, my goodness. Credit to Sergiy Stakhovsky for battling tenaciously

:01:49. > :01:53.to keep himself in the points. Perhaps he hit that one just a

:01:54. > :01:54.little too anxiously. He saw Stakhovsky was closing the gap

:01:55. > :02:21.quickly. That is a difficult shot to try and

:02:22. > :02:49.change directions, when a ball is coming at you with pace.

:02:50. > :02:58.They remain on serve. It is the three hour mark now on Court Number

:02:59. > :03:27.One. Stakhovsky to serve. The serve and volley has been an

:03:28. > :04:12.effective tactic for Stakhovsky. Once again attempting the more

:04:13. > :04:17.difficult target down the line. You have to be in perfect balance and

:04:18. > :06:10.certain that you can time that one to go for it.

:06:11. > :06:26.A blistering backhand to close out that came from Stakhovsky.

:06:27. > :06:34.He will not hit many better backhand than this one. His backhand is his

:06:35. > :06:48.preferred wing off the ground. Finally Court Number One filling up

:06:49. > :06:57.again. It was quite full at the start. But I suppose the weather and

:06:58. > :06:58.perhaps the flying ants have driven some of the spectators away, but

:06:59. > :07:18.they are back. To the top right you can see the

:07:19. > :07:24.construction for the roof that will be in use for the 2019

:07:25. > :07:32.Championships. It is a three-year process. To get it in place and get

:07:33. > :07:49.everything moving properly. Nishikori is serving, the tenth game

:07:50. > :09:19.in the fourth set. 4-5. They are on serve.

:09:20. > :09:45.Unable to control that attempted drop shot.

:09:46. > :09:54.Wonderfully directed from beyond the baseline to close out the service

:09:55. > :09:59.game. It is 5-5. And no doubt the backhands that Nishikori has

:10:00. > :10:05.executed over the last few games will give him hard. It was all over

:10:06. > :10:29.the place in the first couple of sets.

:10:30. > :11:06.to reflect backhand once again. Nishikori did not even attempt to

:11:07. > :11:13.move to run down that one. Yes, this is perfection. -- a great backhand

:11:14. > :12:33.once again. It is that type of day. Kei

:12:34. > :12:35.Nishikori calling a ball boy for a towel. It is that kind of day here

:12:36. > :13:14.on Court Number One. Stakhovsky with another solid hold

:13:15. > :13:23.of serve. No service breaks created or break points opportunities during

:13:24. > :13:27.this fourth set. Stakhovsky won the second set in the tie-break and

:13:28. > :13:29.saved a set point in that breaker. He just may need to do it again here

:13:30. > :14:06.in the fourth. It has become perhaps a little bit

:14:07. > :14:14.more difficult to gain inroads and the Nishikori serve appears as if

:14:15. > :14:15.the starting to hit the ball with a little more confidence from the back

:14:16. > :14:50.of the court. Only the tenth time that Nishikori

:14:51. > :15:20.has served and four lead in the entire match. Just in time to do it.

:15:21. > :15:24.Stakhovsky in conversation with the court. Perhaps the bounce was not as

:15:25. > :15:44.he would have liked it. So we are heading for a fourth set

:15:45. > :16:42.tie-break. Nishikori got down 5-1 in the second

:16:43. > :16:47.set tie-break. It looked as though things were out of control and then

:16:48. > :17:04.he came back to eventually get a set point.

:17:05. > :17:12.Well played. Wrong footing Stakhovsky. That was more of a short

:17:13. > :17:24.lob and a drop shot. Stakhovsky with his first points of

:17:25. > :20:05.this tie-break. He is still only a mini-break down.

:20:06. > :20:05.He has demonstrated his battling qualities throughout this match,

:20:06. > :20:50.Stakhovsky. I'm very well crafted point from

:20:51. > :20:55.Nishikori. A courageous backhand when you consider the number of

:20:56. > :20:59.unforced errors that he has made off that wing in crucial situations

:21:00. > :21:05.today. But he has a deep-seated belief in this shot. A timely

:21:06. > :22:00.winner. Nishikori is edging closer towards

:22:01. > :22:22.the winning line. Getting encouragement from Michael Chang.

:22:23. > :22:37.The serve and volley effective once again for Stakhovsky. A sneak attack

:22:38. > :23:06.really. Nishikori had no idea that he was following that serve in.

:23:07. > :23:18.So, Stakhovsky still only one mini break down. Nishikori now is just

:23:19. > :23:20.composing himself as he prepares to try and progressed through to the

:23:21. > :24:05.third round. He got the impression that Nishikori

:24:06. > :24:13.would be determined not to commit any errors. It brings up match

:24:14. > :24:17.point. Perhaps Stakhovsky had an opportunity to come in behind the

:24:18. > :24:23.backhand down the line. Nishikori was reeling. But he did not and

:24:24. > :24:43.Nishikori regained his equilibrium. So the mini-break secured by

:24:44. > :24:46.Stakhovsky and they are back on serve effectively. One match point

:24:47. > :25:31.goes begging. What a point! A terrific point from

:25:32. > :25:33.both players. Nishikori will be disappointed that he did not put

:25:34. > :25:43.that last one into play. Great defending of the net by

:25:44. > :26:02.Stakhovsky. And in the end he was lucky that

:26:03. > :26:06.Nishikori just missed time to that one because it was easier than a few

:26:07. > :26:27.of the other ones he had put back in the court.

:26:28. > :27:02.Is he thinking about launching a challenge?

:27:03. > :27:19.That fifth double fault of the match from Stakhovsky means it is match

:27:20. > :27:53.point once again. A canny serve from Nishikori. That

:27:54. > :27:58.was only 100 miles an hour but Stakhovsky was unable to time it

:27:59. > :28:03.properly. Well, it was not Nishikori's finest performance, but

:28:04. > :28:09.it was a good fighting effort just the same. No doubt he will gain some

:28:10. > :28:17.confidence from just having come through in difficult circumstances.

:28:18. > :28:22.It took him three hours and 15 minutes but after four keenly

:28:23. > :28:26.contested sets, it is Kei Nishikori, the number nine seed, who goes

:28:27. > :28:37.through to the third round of the men's singles tournament here. 6-4,

:28:38. > :28:44.6-7, 6-1, 7-6. I am sure he will take huge confidence from having

:28:45. > :28:49.prevailed without hitting the highs and playing his best tennis, but he

:28:50. > :28:55.was stubborn, he was competitive, and he hung around to get himself

:28:56. > :29:02.through any bad patches he may have experience. Sergiy Stakhovsky

:29:03. > :29:09.eliminated at this second round stage as he was last year. It is Kei

:29:10. > :29:15.Nishikori who leaves to the celebratory applause of the fans

:29:16. > :29:21.here on Court Number One. He will interact with the fans, signing

:29:22. > :29:29.autographs. Some people will try and grab a selfie as well. All types of

:29:30. > :29:41.things being proffered for the number nine seed to sign. Stakhovsky

:29:42. > :29:50.played well. He very nearly gained the upper hand. He played a poor

:29:51. > :29:57.third set perhaps. That allowed Nishikori just to settle in

:29:58. > :30:03.And for the first time in what is now a three match rivalry, Kei

:30:04. > :30:12.Nishikori gets a victory over Sarah Goss Bukovsky. -- over Sarah Guy

:30:13. > :30:17.Stakhovsky. And as such she goes through to the third round, and

:30:18. > :30:20.that's how he did it. He is now speaking to our post match

:30:21. > :30:25.interview, Lee McKenzie, with who he will share his immediate thoughts

:30:26. > :30:28.after that win. First of all, congratulations for

:30:29. > :30:33.the fifth time here at Wimbledon, you are through to the third round.

:30:34. > :30:38.We dominated at moments but he kept coming back. How tough was by? I

:30:39. > :30:44.knew it was going to be a tough match because I think his best

:30:45. > :30:53.surface is grass. I knew he was going to be a tough player. And

:30:54. > :30:57.especially the last set, he is a didn't get a break. Intends

:30:58. > :31:00.absorbing performance, what will you be working on before the next rung

:31:01. > :31:11.with Roberto Bautista Agut aggrieved? I seem to be playing good

:31:12. > :31:20.enough against Sergiy today. I have two raise my level to be Bautista.

:31:21. > :31:23.When a tough opponent, hot conditions, and there seem to be an

:31:24. > :31:31.awful lot of flying insects around. There were so many. The bugs were

:31:32. > :31:35.hitting my face all the time, so it wasn't easy. But I kept my focus. We

:31:36. > :31:38.know how much she struggled with injury on grass, but you looked to

:31:39. > :31:43.be moving around well out there. How were you feeling? Today was good. I

:31:44. > :31:49.felt very good on the court and I had enough energy. I was ready to

:31:50. > :31:53.play a long match. Yeah, very happy to be healthy again. Roberto

:31:54. > :31:59.Bautista Agut Agu is your next opponent. You have beaten him on

:32:00. > :32:03.four occasions. Have you beaten him on grass before, and how tough will

:32:04. > :32:08.he be? I don't think we have played on grass before so it will be a new

:32:09. > :32:14.match for us. He's a good player, a very solid player from the baseline.

:32:15. > :32:22.So I'll try to play aggressively. Well done today. Thank you.

:32:23. > :32:26.COMMENTATOR: So this was how Kei Nishikori punched his ticket through

:32:27. > :32:35.to the third round during the men's singles tournament. It was on a

:32:36. > :32:39.fourth set tie-break with his battling qualities serving him well.

:32:40. > :32:43.He conceded during that post match interview that he will have two

:32:44. > :32:47.raise his level. He's got three hours and 15 minutes of Grand Slam

:32:48. > :32:51.tennis under his belt during the course of this second round match.

:32:52. > :32:57.Now he's looking to regroup, recover and return, where he will face

:32:58. > :33:04.Roberto Bautista Agut, the 18th seed in that next round. And that will be

:33:05. > :33:11.a difficult proposition for Nishikori. Especially if he plays as

:33:12. > :33:18.he did today. I think he was just a little too erratic off the ground.

:33:19. > :33:23.And Bautista Agu, one of these ground that misses the ground stroke

:33:24. > :33:34.every other Tuesday. If Nishikori is erratic again, then the Spaniard

:33:35. > :33:38.will give him all kinds of trouble. Batista Agut, of course, is not

:33:39. > :33:43.known as a grass court superstar. But the way the game is played

:33:44. > :33:57.today, all surfaces are quite similar, really. I'm sure he'll be

:33:58. > :34:01.to play regardless. Nishikori will be pleased with how he served. Did

:34:02. > :34:06.well behind the first serve and the second, really. But that wasn't the

:34:07. > :34:11.issue. The issue for him was that he didn't really get enough returns

:34:12. > :34:20.into play. Didn't really put Stakhovsky under enough pressure. On

:34:21. > :34:30.the return. Two breakthrough as often as he would have liked, I'm

:34:31. > :34:35.sure. So, that concludes what has been an enthralling second round

:34:36. > :34:38.match up in the men's singles competition. Kei Nishikori through

:34:39. > :34:43.to the third round with a four set victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky. We

:34:44. > :34:47.will hand you over to the commentators for the next match,

:34:48. > :34:51.which is Tracy Austin he will be alongside Nick Mullins here on Court

:34:52. > :35:12.Number One. -- who will be alongside.

:35:13. > :35:24.NICK MULLINS: thank you very much. Good afternoon, everybody and thank

:35:25. > :35:35.you for staying with us on Court One. Our next attraction is one of

:35:36. > :35:39.the main attractions of the fortnight from this championship's

:35:40. > :35:48.perspective. Venus Williams, a second look at her over this

:35:49. > :35:58.fortnight. And it remains the most picture perfect London summer's day.

:35:59. > :36:02.The third day of these championships and it is beautifully warm outside,

:36:03. > :36:10.brought from our broadcast centre out to Court Number One. The most

:36:11. > :36:27.pleasant of walks. TRACY AUSTIN: A perfect summer day.

:36:28. > :36:32.Number one Court. Without its hat on. This summer, as we all know,

:36:33. > :36:39.there is a new roof being put on. It will look very different in a few

:36:40. > :36:46.years' time. Rather like that, when Centre Court was being rebuilt, when

:36:47. > :36:51.its roof is being put on. It's a little bit different. But it will be

:36:52. > :36:56.an even more wonderful Court, Tracy, once it does have a protective cover

:36:57. > :36:59.on in a couple of years. A couple of years before it's completely

:37:00. > :37:03.finished, I'm told. And they're doing such an incredible job. I

:37:04. > :37:07.think they have nine months to work on it, and then they have to take

:37:08. > :37:14.the big cranes than again to get ready and prepped for Wimbledon. --

:37:15. > :37:19.big cranes down. This'll be the second roof at Wimbledon. At the

:37:20. > :37:26.Australian Open they have roofs on three different courts. The US Open,

:37:27. > :37:31.they opened their first roof last year on the Arthur Ashe Stadium,

:37:32. > :37:35.which is quite a project because it is a 23,000 seat stadium. And of

:37:36. > :37:39.course the French Open doesn't have a roof on any stadiums yet, but

:37:40. > :37:45.there are plans for one. Fortunately this year in Paris there wasn't much

:37:46. > :37:50.rain. But it can be a pretty bleak place, Roland Garros, when it is

:37:51. > :37:55.wet. The main court is particularly exposed. But that, too, will have a

:37:56. > :38:01.lid on it before too long. This is what we are looking forward to next.

:38:02. > :38:08.The women's neck second round match between the Chinese Qiang Wang and

:38:09. > :38:12.Venus Williams. Lots of folk here, lots of youngsters for the first

:38:13. > :38:15.time he might be experiencing the magical tournament for the first

:38:16. > :38:22.time. And I dare say watching Venus Williams for the first time. It is

:38:23. > :38:29.on so many people's bucket list, to be able to come to Wimbledon just

:38:30. > :38:34.one time and look at Henman Hill. It's absolutely packed on this

:38:35. > :38:42.glorious afternoon. Verrall gathered in front of the screen, because Andy

:38:43. > :38:49.Murray is on that court, on Centre Court next. -- of a all gathered in

:38:50. > :38:52.front of the screen. The gates opened at half past ten in the

:38:53. > :38:56.morning, and even those with passive that would have been allowed to get

:38:57. > :39:03.onto the outside courts to have nice seats just charge immediately to

:39:04. > :39:06.that area. Well, they charge according to the walls here at

:39:07. > :39:12.Wimbledon. It is a stately march from the gates here at Wimbledon.

:39:13. > :39:17.That screen, as I'm sure you know, is bolted onto the court that we are

:39:18. > :39:32.currently occupying the other side of, Court Number One. Talking of

:39:33. > :39:37.hats... I like his creativity. Venus Williams taking her bag from her

:39:38. > :40:11.coach, David, and wondering out into the sunshine alongside Qiang Wang.

:40:12. > :40:25.Venus Williams, her 20th Wimbledon. Really remarkable. 37 years old now.

:40:26. > :40:30.Yeah, she's been appearing on these lawns for as long as most of us can

:40:31. > :40:37.remember. She was 17 years old when we first saw her here in 1997. And

:40:38. > :40:41.at the age of 37 and watched by her mum, she is the oldest woman in the

:40:42. > :40:46.draw. We can say so many things about Venus Williams, but her draw

:40:47. > :40:51.ability, the fact that she's still here in the year when she's been to

:40:52. > :40:55.a Grand Slam semifinal, let's not forget, in Melbourne, at the start

:40:56. > :40:58.of the year. The way she regenerates herself and keeps coming back

:40:59. > :41:03.year-on-year to be one of the main contenders every year, it seems.

:41:04. > :41:08.Absolutely. Still ranked number 11 in the world. Got to the finals at

:41:09. > :41:14.the Australian Open this year, losing to Serena. That was Serena's

:41:15. > :41:27.23rd major, making history. So nice to see her back in a final once

:41:28. > :41:35.again. Five-time champion here. And getting ready to face the five-time

:41:36. > :41:52.champion am a 25 -year-old Chinese Qiang Wang. The umpire is the

:41:53. > :42:09.Serbian Mariano. She is 25, Qiang, and did her country's the Blessed --

:42:10. > :42:14.and is her country's third-best ranked player. She is one of the

:42:15. > :42:26.compatriots that set out on Monday. Venus, it seems, is in no rush.

:42:27. > :42:30.UMPIRE: 20 seconds in between the points. Try to stay away from

:42:31. > :42:34.bouncing directly in the grass. If you want to challenge, please do it

:42:35. > :42:42.quickly. Any questions? Would you like to call it quits yellow tails.

:42:43. > :42:50.-- would you like to call it? Yellowtail. It is heads.

:42:51. > :42:54.No hesitation. She won the toss, and she will serve. Almost before the

:42:55. > :42:59.coin has settled, she decided that she will be the one who will set the

:43:00. > :43:03.tone for this much. Venus has such an aggressive mind that. As soon as

:43:04. > :43:07.she's that into the All-England Club, steps onto these lawns, she

:43:08. > :43:18.becomes even more aggressive. Which is something that you need to be

:43:19. > :43:23.successful. Five times a singles champion here. Five times between

:43:24. > :43:27.2000 and 2008. The last time she when it was when she beat her sister

:43:28. > :43:31.in the final, and then that wonderful run to the semifinals last

:43:32. > :43:35.summer defying the march of time, as we've been talking about, but she

:43:36. > :43:39.has been doing so often in recent times. Defying another showdown

:43:40. > :43:47.against her sister last summer by Angelique Kerber. -- defied another

:43:48. > :43:59.showdown against her sister. Lost but 6-4, 6-4. -- lost that. And her

:44:00. > :44:03.opponent, who is trying to do something that she's never done so

:44:04. > :44:07.far in her career and reach the third round of the Grand Slam. She

:44:08. > :44:11.has been to the stage, the second round, three times in New York. Once

:44:12. > :44:15.in Melbourne, once in Paris, and once here in London. I think it's

:44:16. > :44:19.safe to say that if she wins this one, this would be the biggest day

:44:20. > :44:29.of her tennis career so far against the great Venus Williams on one of

:44:30. > :44:32.Wimbledon's Big Show courts. Interesting, these two played just

:44:33. > :44:37.recently for the first time at the French Open. That was in the first

:44:38. > :44:50.round. Venus was able to win that in a tight two setter.

:44:51. > :44:56.STUDIO: Well, Venus Williams, five-time champion on Court Number

:44:57. > :45:01.One. We'll be back for the start of her much. Let's show you what is

:45:02. > :45:05.happening elsewhere. Over on Centre Court, Andy Murray has made his way

:45:06. > :45:11.onto court to play his second round match against a real character, the

:45:12. > :45:14.extrovert, the very talented Dustin Brown who beat Rafael Nadal two

:45:15. > :45:19.years ago. As you can see, early stages of that match which is now

:45:20. > :45:24.live on BBC One. If you want to see the defending champion, it is now

:45:25. > :45:27.live on BBC One. This match was the second and centre because of the

:45:28. > :45:31.length of the match before it, involving the British number one

:45:32. > :45:40.woman, Joanna Konta, who fought off a real battle against the

:45:41. > :45:51.21-year-old Croatian, Vecic. Had to come back from 0-30 down to save it.

:45:52. > :45:56.Very emotional scenes as Donna Vekic came so close. Very good for Joe to

:45:57. > :46:00.console her Ribena. In this game that we play in tennis, it is very

:46:01. > :46:05.hard when someone has fought so well and they had to walk off as a loser.

:46:06. > :46:11.But Jo marches on and adhere to the third round for the first time here

:46:12. > :46:14.at Wimbledon. For the first time since 1986 there will be two British

:46:15. > :46:20.women in the third round, because Heather Watson is true. I wonderful

:46:21. > :46:26.victory out on Court Number Two against the 18 fees, Sevastova.

:46:27. > :46:29.Watson showed great promise a couple of years ago and we have expected

:46:30. > :46:33.great things on her. She dropped a little bit down the rankings after

:46:34. > :46:37.that wonderful context against Serena Williams on Centre Court when

:46:38. > :46:43.she had just two points for winning the match. But she seems to be back

:46:44. > :46:46.to her coach. -- back to her best. A new coach, Colin Beecher, seems to

:46:47. > :46:50.be installing confidence and she will be racing her way back up the

:46:51. > :46:53.world rankings once again. Though Heather is through and in the next

:46:54. > :46:58.round on Friday she will face the former world number one, Victoria

:46:59. > :47:09.Azarenka, who came through against the 16th seed Vesnina. Great to see

:47:10. > :47:13.her having a comeback after the birth of her first child last year.

:47:14. > :47:19.So Azarenka against Heather Watson in the third round. And another

:47:20. > :47:27.great British victory here on Wednesday. You may have seen this on

:47:28. > :47:35.BBC Two. Aljaz Bedene has won against his good friend, Dzumhur,

:47:36. > :47:41.Bosnia. -- Bosnia. He beat Ivo Karlovic of the first round. He has

:47:42. > :47:49.another big server in the next, 16 C Gilles Muller. Aljaz Bedene

:47:50. > :47:53.continues him at Wimbledon. -- the 16th seed shall Muller. On Court

:47:54. > :47:58.Number Two this is our future match on the red button which features the

:47:59. > :48:01.former US Open champion Marin Cilic. He was down in this first step to

:48:02. > :48:08.Florian Meyer, they came back when it in the tie-break. -- in this

:48:09. > :48:16.first net. That is on Court Two when you can watch that one on the red

:48:17. > :48:24.button. So, we have Andy Murray on BBC One and Venus Williams here on

:48:25. > :48:28.BBC Two. Back we go. NICK MULLINS: We will be keeping a

:48:29. > :48:32.very close eye on Venus Williams today. Particularly after that press

:48:33. > :48:36.conference, after her win on Monday, Tracy. She was asked about the car

:48:37. > :48:40.crash. I think we all know she was involved in that in Florida recently

:48:41. > :48:45.when a passenger in the other car died. She was invited to add to the

:48:46. > :48:49.statement that she put a previously, but she found it so tough to talk

:48:50. > :48:52.about that she broke down and had to leave the press conference. The

:48:53. > :48:58.accident has resulted in legal proceedings against her. We have no

:48:59. > :49:02.idea how she's feeling, but there must be 1 million emotions going

:49:03. > :49:07.through her mind. Absolutely. I'm for Venus arrived last Tuesday,

:49:08. > :49:10.about eight days ago, in England. It was a couple of days later that the

:49:11. > :49:15.passenger in the other car passed away. That is when the story kind of

:49:16. > :49:26.erupted. So there is a lot on Venus's mind now. The job at hand

:49:27. > :49:29.right now, however, is to win a tennis match at her favourite

:49:30. > :49:35.tournament, in one of her favourite parts of the world. Venus Williams,

:49:36. > :49:37.five times the former champion. She will serve at the start of the

:49:38. > :50:54.second round match on Court One. Looking sharp already. That serve is

:50:55. > :52:04.111, 112 mph. As she has done for such a long time

:52:05. > :52:09.now, she's picking and choosing the events that she plays. She is not

:52:10. > :52:13.overly busy. It has been a long time since she was a regular at all the

:52:14. > :52:17.big tour events during the year. But when she does turn up at events like

:52:18. > :52:21.this, she always seems to be in prime physical shape. This is just

:52:22. > :52:26.her ninth event of the year. I think that 37 it's very smart for Venus to

:52:27. > :52:34.manage her schedule. She's been so consistent throughout 2017. This is

:52:35. > :52:55.the 25-year-old Chinese Qiang Wang. Very consistent. Accurate, moves

:52:56. > :53:04.well. Is she going to have big enough weapons? Well, that serve is

:53:05. > :53:09.her favourite one. The one-hour ride delete macro wide? Yeah. -- the worn

:53:10. > :53:41.out wide. Just a little late on a couple of

:53:42. > :53:49.forehands. Quite interesting, and five foot eight, Wang is on the

:53:50. > :54:01.shorter side these days on the WTA Tour.

:54:02. > :54:17.That they very confident start for the Chinese. A nice hold that will

:54:18. > :54:18.really settles nerves for Wang. A big show courts against five-time

:54:19. > :54:55.former champion. Huge disparity between the second

:54:56. > :55:28.serve and the first served for Venus. That one sitting at 77 mph.

:55:29. > :55:36.One thing we are seeing very early on, Qiang hitting the ball cleanly

:55:37. > :55:42.and hitting its flat and low. And a lobbying the pace from Williams

:55:43. > :55:46.nicely. Keeping her body down low. -- and absorbing the pace from

:55:47. > :56:31.Williams nicely. The second serve is not penetrative.

:56:32. > :56:35.Venus has got to be careful that she doesn't become too predictable on

:56:36. > :57:02.the second serve. She likes to slice it round to the forehand.

:57:03. > :57:11.0-30, Wang had opportunities here. The last three serves in the net.

:57:12. > :57:27.Just needs to stand a little longer. Keep that heads up.

:57:28. > :57:40.She was waiting for it. Waiting for that forehand. You spotted it,

:57:41. > :58:07.seeing the movement. Venus didn't. Talking about that slice serve a

:58:08. > :58:12.Venus, it's helpful to have on the surface. The slice keeps the globe,

:58:13. > :58:14.away from her opponent. But you need to make sure that you mix it up. The

:58:15. > :58:38.slice keeps it low. Venus Williams has come through that

:58:39. > :58:42.challenge and leads on serve 2-1. What kind of changes have you seen

:58:43. > :58:49.in her game, Tracy come if any, over however many years? The last four,

:58:50. > :58:52.five, six? As she has dealt with that march of time. Things that she

:58:53. > :58:57.would have done naturally as a 21-year-old but maybe you can't do

:58:58. > :59:07.as a 37-year-old. Have you seen anything different? Does she do

:59:08. > :59:11.things differently? I think as the game moves on and time moves on

:59:12. > :59:18.every five years, the game improves. And so you have to improve along

:59:19. > :59:21.with that. I think the Venus's forehand is actually better now than

:59:22. > :59:26.it was maybe a decade ago. But that's still the slingshot. That's

:59:27. > :59:29.the shop but he really take the temperature and how confident she

:59:30. > :59:34.is. Whether she's stepping in driving through that side. The

:59:35. > :59:40.backhand is always so technically sound. -- vat the shops where you

:59:41. > :59:45.really take the temperature. The other thing is the willingness,

:59:46. > :59:47.Venus's willingness to move forward. To get the swing volleys and

:59:48. > :00:06.approaches. Beautifully executed volleys.

:00:07. > :00:37.On serve at the start of this second-round match.

:00:38. > :00:50.Those are the types of plays that have helped to win this five times.

:00:51. > :00:52.Big powerful ground strokes. Intercepts the volley. Her coach has

:00:53. > :01:07.been with her almost a decade now. And again. Down low, using the

:01:08. > :01:54.knees. She gets extraordinary power from

:01:55. > :02:04.the backhand. Almost drops down like a lollipop before flying into it.

:02:05. > :02:06.Tremendous technique. Quick take and then accelerates. The motion gets

:02:07. > :02:31.quicker as she makes impact. That is beautiful. These are the

:02:32. > :02:37.types of ground strokes back can be penetrating on grass. Hard, flat,

:02:38. > :03:31.deep. Really moves through this surface.

:03:32. > :04:17.A little frustrated. You will not see much emotion from venous on

:04:18. > :04:33.court. -- from Venus Williams on court.

:04:34. > :04:48.How well did she do from 0-40 to come back and save that service

:04:49. > :04:56.game? She has twice beaten players inside the top 20. Caroline

:04:57. > :04:59.Wozniacki a while ago, and Elena Vesnina a couple of months ago in

:05:00. > :05:11.Rome when she made it to the last 16 on the clay. She came unstuck

:05:12. > :05:47.against that Lana Kuznetsova. -- Svetlana Kuznetsova.

:05:48. > :05:56.That is a shame. It is just out. Magnificent hustling from the

:05:57. > :06:05.Chinese. That was a phenomenal point from both players. This was Venus'

:06:06. > :06:13.pick-up off the return just to stay alive in the point. That was a smart

:06:14. > :06:21.serve. 92 mph. The swing and that slice.

:06:22. > :07:17.The first point she has lost on first serve.

:07:18. > :07:48.Wang. Guaranteed a big television audience back home watching her. Now

:07:49. > :07:53.the third most popular sporting China behind football and

:07:54. > :07:56.basketball. Something like 14 million people playing, so however

:07:57. > :08:03.tidy the percentage is, if you get that fraction of a percentage up to

:08:04. > :08:06.this level you are going to be threatening at some point. I think

:08:07. > :08:13.it goes back to the Beijing Olympics. Looking for gold medals,

:08:14. > :08:19.looking for medal count. She started playing when she was nine years old

:08:20. > :08:28.and so many started. A great programme started. Peter McNamara,

:08:29. > :08:41.two-time Wimbledon champion. A great doubles player. He has been coaching

:08:42. > :08:49.Wang for a while. Won doubles in 1980 and 1982. A great tennis mind.

:08:50. > :08:54.She is more than holding her own non-number one Court. -- on number

:08:55. > :09:17.one quarter. The Chinese did so well, they

:09:18. > :09:22.realised they had to get ramped up quickly because there was not much

:09:23. > :09:29.tennis before the Beijing Olympics. It was decided it was going to be

:09:30. > :09:34.there. Accomplished coaches worked with their juniors. You can see from

:09:35. > :09:41.Wang, her great technique. Simple strokes. Not a lot to go wrong. A

:09:42. > :10:08.nice pop on her first serve. We were watching Japan's Kei

:10:09. > :10:14.Nishikori winning on this court half an hour or so ago. For China, it has

:10:15. > :10:31.been the women's game. That is where they saw profits to be made.

:10:32. > :10:44.A wonderful rally. Tremendous ball striking. So clean. Because of the

:10:45. > :10:50.technique, she is able to hit with a lot of power. The left arm is up.

:10:51. > :11:13.Keeps the upper body in the right position.

:11:14. > :11:18.It must be intimidating, when you are at the opposite end of looking

:11:19. > :11:23.at Venus Williams positioning herself pretty much on the service

:11:24. > :11:28.line. She is almost in the court, even on the first serve. Very

:11:29. > :11:33.aggressive positioning. That is the purpose. Sending the message - I am

:11:34. > :11:54.going to attack this second serve. And she is testing those reflex is.

:11:55. > :11:58.She is banking on herself despite the shorter time period she has to

:11:59. > :12:02.make her mind up, of getting it back, which is what she did just

:12:03. > :12:18.then. When the ball is slower, like that

:12:19. > :13:16.returned, all the way up to the ball on this surface, slower balls. .

:13:17. > :13:32.Break point opportunity for Venus. Wang has saved all four.

:13:33. > :13:39.That is the pressure she exerts. The first break of serve in this opening

:13:40. > :13:53.set for the former champion. That gets to you, when you are

:13:54. > :14:02.always having to save break points. You feel like you're serve is under

:14:03. > :14:07.attack. The scoreline pressure, as well as Venus's return. Venus has

:14:08. > :14:31.not faced break point so far in this match.

:14:32. > :14:37.That ball stopped a bit and then Venus hit too early. Had to make the

:14:38. > :14:58.adjustment. A strange bounce. Two loose points. You can hear

:14:59. > :15:55.Venus's support team - come on, V. Consistent length and questioning

:15:56. > :16:01.from Qiang Wang. Determined not to be driven back. And look at what it

:16:02. > :16:22.has brought her. A couple of break back points.

:16:23. > :16:25.The first break point in this match has come and gone, but she has one

:16:26. > :17:04.more. How well she has done to get herself

:17:05. > :17:17.back into this first set. What hitting from Qiang Wang.

:17:18. > :17:32.You mentioned it earlier. The simplicity of what Qiang Wang is

:17:33. > :17:36.doing. The quality of the ball striking and consistency. The

:17:37. > :17:44.consistency of each stroke. Very simple. Not a huge take-back. Great

:17:45. > :17:48.footwork, getting herself in the correct position, driving through

:17:49. > :17:56.the contact point and quickly recovering. Very alert. When you use

:17:57. > :18:00.the lower body like Wang does, you can absorb the pace and get the

:18:01. > :18:09.quick racket take-back. To absorb the pace of a Venus Williams shot.

:18:10. > :18:14.What she does well also on a surface she is not particularly familiar

:18:15. > :18:19.with is getting the footwork right. She is balanced and in the right

:18:20. > :18:25.position for they shots. Enormously impressive. You need to get down, in

:18:26. > :18:26.case there is a bad bounce at the last second, you can make the subtle

:18:27. > :18:58.adjustment. New balls and back on serve in the

:18:59. > :19:02.set. Great demeanour from Wang. She gets her serve broken and stays even

:19:03. > :19:24.keeled and breaks back. Did not get disappointed.

:19:25. > :19:31.There is certainly a feeling that when you are watching Venus or

:19:32. > :19:35.Sabena, the moment there are a potent shows any sign of frailty,

:19:36. > :19:36.that they are beginning to doubt themselves, that is when problems

:19:37. > :20:57.rack up. Wang has not shown that. A little bit too much air under the

:20:58. > :21:43.drop shot from Qiang Wang. Wow, that is great racket work from

:21:44. > :22:41.Williams. She did a great job of fighting off

:22:42. > :22:45.the first two bullets from Venus. You get so little time to reposition

:22:46. > :22:47.yourself immediately after the serve to get set for the return. She did

:22:48. > :23:22.so well. We are under the flight path today.

:23:23. > :23:31.Every couple of minutes planes will be popping over.

:23:32. > :23:39.They diverted at Flushing Meadows in New York. The flight path tends to

:23:40. > :23:44.stay away from the tennis. Most of the time, unless the wind changes

:23:45. > :24:02.and they have to to fly over Arthur Ashe Stadium.

:24:03. > :24:09.UMPIRE: Miss Wang is challenging the core. This is a big moment. It will

:24:10. > :24:25.be a break point. If you come up with the A 's, that

:24:26. > :24:58.works. -- the ace. That will do. She has a nice fluid service game.

:24:59. > :25:01.Really pushes off with her legs very well and picks up speed as she goes

:25:02. > :25:30.to hit. This is a tightly contested half an

:25:31. > :26:06.hour. Four games each. Tremendous step on the return. --

:26:07. > :26:12.depth on the return. It is a very short take-back. Uses the power.

:26:13. > :26:17.Keeps the body low and pushes forward.

:26:18. > :27:20.A split step from Wang right as Venus hit the ball. Good balance.

:27:21. > :27:32.Tried to go around the post. A couple of these ground strokes from

:27:33. > :27:33.Williams have lost a little of their length, giving Wang an opportunity

:27:34. > :27:48.to get on balance. How significant might that be? She

:27:49. > :27:50.has broken and walks back to the chair a game away from taking the

:27:51. > :28:10.first set. She has looked totally unflustered.

:28:11. > :28:15.It says a lot for the work Peter McNamara has done with her, but it

:28:16. > :28:19.says an awful lot about her self-confidence. Absolutely and to

:28:20. > :28:24.have somebody like Peter McNamara in her camp, a former top-10 player who

:28:25. > :28:28.has played on this court, played big matches, for her to ask questions

:28:29. > :28:35.about emotions and nerves and tactics. She has handled herself

:28:36. > :28:42.beautifully. Broken to go down 4-2 and she stayed with the game plan.

:28:43. > :28:51.She did not get distraught. Now, three games in a row for Qiang Wang

:28:52. > :28:54.and Venus has lost a little bit of intensity. She needs to pick up the

:28:55. > :29:01.weight of her shot again and keep Qiang Wang on her back foot. It

:29:02. > :29:18.remains the most glorious afternoon. Once more, Venus doing things in her

:29:19. > :29:20.own time. The change of racket. She has work to do to stay in this first

:29:21. > :29:53.set. A long serve for the second set.

:29:54. > :29:55.Wasn't able to get across the finish line, let's see if she has learned

:29:56. > :30:18.from that. Heavy, heavy second serve into the

:30:19. > :31:09.body. That is a smart play, when you are playing Venus, six foot one.

:31:10. > :31:14.She continues to pick out the winners. She has got two points for

:31:15. > :31:53.the set. She is halfway towards what would be

:31:54. > :32:02.the biggest day of her tennis life. She has won the first set. SUE

:32:03. > :32:09.BARKER: Are we in for another surprise? Will the tenth seed be the

:32:10. > :32:14.tenth to go? What a comeback in that first set. We will be back in a

:32:15. > :32:32.moment. Meanwhile, this match is on Centre Court.

:32:33. > :32:38.Marin Cilic is serving at match point against Florian Mayer. He was

:32:39. > :32:50.a break at serve down in the first set but came back to win it in a

:32:51. > :33:01.tie-break. He is through in three sets. And a rather controversial

:33:02. > :33:09.match that finished out on court 16. Ruben Bemelmans won it, the Belgian.

:33:10. > :33:18.His opponent very unhappy, he had about five overalls from the umpire.

:33:19. > :33:23.He lost five games in a row and lost that set six games to three and

:33:24. > :33:27.after the celebrations, this happened. He got the wallet out and

:33:28. > :33:34.started throwing coins as the umpire got down from his chair. We will no

:33:35. > :33:37.doubt hear more about that and he will be involved in what promises to

:33:38. > :33:42.be a rather interesting press conference. We will keep you

:33:43. > :34:20.up-to-date. Act we go to this story unfolding on Court One.

:34:21. > :34:26.Absolutely loved that serve because that is Venus's least favourite

:34:27. > :34:40.serve out wide. Stayed up and into her serve, much

:34:41. > :35:12.better than the last two first serves.

:35:13. > :35:18.So typical of what Venus Williams has done over the years. Dropped the

:35:19. > :35:23.first set and then comes out with such a dominant service game at the

:35:24. > :35:28.start of the third. Astonishing effort at the start of this year to

:35:29. > :35:32.reach the final of the Australian Open. Lost in the end to her sister

:35:33. > :35:40.Serena but it kind of set her up for the year. She had semifinals in

:35:41. > :35:44.Miami, lost the Johanna Konta. All of that earned her enough ranking

:35:45. > :35:49.points to break back into the world's top ten again. All of those

:35:50. > :35:54.who thought perhaps her best years were behind her, a few years ago,

:35:55. > :36:10.suddenly having to refocus and look at her as a top ten player again.

:36:11. > :36:21.What a story at the Australian Open. 35-year-old Roger Federer taking the

:36:22. > :36:28.title and 35-year-old Serena Williams. Venus at the time was 36.

:36:29. > :36:42.Really extending the life of tennis players and their mentality.

:36:43. > :36:51.About a decade ago, players would get to 30 and there would be talk of

:36:52. > :36:52.retirement. If they hadn't retired, the rest would be asking them about

:36:53. > :37:12.it! Venus has just turned 37. Increasingly, certainly on the

:37:13. > :37:18.tennis court, life feels pretty good when you are in your 30s. Both the

:37:19. > :37:37.men and women's side of things. It pays to be a 30-something.

:37:38. > :37:42.Nice timing on that return. Venus standing so close, hitting the ball

:37:43. > :37:59.early. Qiang Wang is 25. Some early issues at the start of

:38:00. > :38:57.this second set. That is David Witt, with the dark

:38:58. > :39:06.cap on the right-hand side, Venus' coach.

:39:07. > :39:16.Venus threatened to come forward and I think it was that distraction that

:39:17. > :39:32.Wang saw, made him miss queue on that forehand.

:39:33. > :39:47.Qiang Wang has been incredible and she has faced break points. So

:39:48. > :40:25.sturdy, mentally. Once again, under enormous pressure,

:40:26. > :40:28.she would stand it. She saved seven of eight rate points. Also

:40:29. > :40:33.incredible that Wang has not played a grass court lead up event. The

:40:34. > :40:38.last tournament she played at, was Paris, she lost in the first round.

:40:39. > :40:46.It is a long time to go without a tournament match, about five weeks.

:40:47. > :40:54.Most people feel the need, and she has never won a match at Wimbledon

:40:55. > :41:04.for this year. People feel the need to play some

:41:05. > :41:07.leader events because grass court season is show short. It is such an

:41:08. > :41:23.awkward surface to play on. These two are playing so quickly

:41:24. > :41:38.between points. Looking strong behind her serve

:41:39. > :42:26.again, Venus Williams. I think people are really enjoying

:42:27. > :42:38.what we are seeing. We know all about Venus, we know less about

:42:39. > :42:48.Qiang Wang. What a contest she has helped to make this.

:42:49. > :42:56.Qiang Wang giving Venus Williams a right old battle on Court Number

:42:57. > :43:30.One. Lena made the big splash, two times Grand Slam champion.

:43:31. > :43:39.That loopy shot does not work well on this surface. On clay, it is more

:43:40. > :43:44.beneficial because the label grip on the surface and bounce up high. But

:43:45. > :43:54.here, an uncomfortable position for Wang to punish it.

:43:55. > :44:04.Coming to the net and winning the point. On this surface, you are

:44:05. > :44:08.looking for more big, powerful, flat strokes, slices are affected. --

:44:09. > :44:33.effective. Mixed up her serves beautifully.

:44:34. > :44:41.That was a second serve. Got Williams.

:44:42. > :44:45.She told us coming into this that she likes her serve and we should

:44:46. > :44:59.look out for it. She is forcing errors from Venus

:45:00. > :45:19.Williams, former champion. Chinese tennis learning how to fly

:45:20. > :45:25.again without Li Na over the past few years. She created such waves,

:45:26. > :45:33.winning those Grand Slams. Finalist tier three times. So much press, in

:45:34. > :45:53.China, so much interest. That's the way. We haven't seen that

:45:54. > :45:55.enough. More aggression. More venom on that ground stroke at the sharp

:45:56. > :46:44.angle. She has to continue to look to take

:46:45. > :47:11.the initiative. Talked about how she eased herself

:47:12. > :47:18.back into the world top ten, third oldest player in W TE history.

:47:19. > :47:22.Joining Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to be a top ten player

:47:23. > :47:28.at that age. You bumped into one of your old markers on the way out of

:47:29. > :47:35.this court. How would Chrissy have faced this challenge? How would you

:47:36. > :47:41.have played Venus Williams? What would you have done? It is just such

:47:42. > :47:45.a different game today. So much power. Venus in my opinion is the

:47:46. > :47:52.first player to be six foot one and so agile. The Williams sisters

:47:53. > :47:58.together were the first to be able to be so offensive from a defensive

:47:59. > :48:05.position. The strength, the way they have so much power. They really

:48:06. > :48:14.forced the rest of the tour to spend more time in the gym, to get

:48:15. > :48:19.quicker. To have bigger serves. Every five or ten years, you see the

:48:20. > :48:24.huge improvement and therefore, at 37, I think Venus is a better player

:48:25. > :48:26.than she was when she was 19 or 20. You just have too, in order to keep

:48:27. > :50:02.up. That is just great scrambling from

:50:03. > :50:32.Wang. Tremendous pace. We have been talking, she hasn't

:50:33. > :50:36.played that much on grass, hasn't had a talk on grass in the build-up

:50:37. > :50:40.to this, but one of the things that is noticeable is how she improvises

:50:41. > :50:44.on those shots that she just has to play. They may not come naturally

:50:45. > :50:49.but it gets the ball back over the net and she's doing that

:50:50. > :50:53.brilliantly. On this surface more than any other, those improv skills

:50:54. > :51:01.are necessary. Keep yourself in a point, there is an awkward bounce.

:51:02. > :51:55.A little slow moving to that backhand for Venus.

:51:56. > :52:06.Danger zone here. Didn't push forward into that shocked, she

:52:07. > :52:19.backed off. -- didn't push forward into that shocked. -- shot.

:52:20. > :52:27.That was a brave second serve. The slice went right into the body of

:52:28. > :52:59.Wang. Once again, what can you say about

:53:00. > :53:01.how Wang is playing? Hunting down the point from one end of the court

:53:02. > :53:25.to the other. At what point does she start to

:53:26. > :53:26.think about the doorstep she is on? Very important she doesn't think

:53:27. > :53:52.about it. Couple of brilliant serves from

:53:53. > :54:00.Venus Williams back against the wall. That second serve out to the

:54:01. > :54:17.backhand is her least favourite but she went for it.

:54:18. > :55:00.SUE BARKER: That really was a tense time but great champions find a way

:55:01. > :55:05.to win when they are down in a game. Venus is now back and front in this

:55:06. > :55:09.set and hanging on. We will leave this night and head to Centre Court

:55:10. > :55:21.for Andy Murray. You can continue watching on the red button.

:55:22. > :55:25.Let's join our commentators on Centre Court, Tim Henman, John

:55:26. > :55:33.McEnroe and Mark Petchey. A wayward forehand from Dustin Brown

:55:34. > :55:52.opens the door for Andy Murray. Not the cleanest return he has

:55:53. > :56:01.struck all day but still pretty effective.

:56:02. > :56:09.That was extremely disappointing. Dustin Brown sort of faded. Not

:56:10. > :56:15.really making a good effort at that moment. The legs just gave out.

:56:16. > :56:22.Looks like he might be weary, doesn't seem to have the spring that

:56:23. > :56:30.I've seen in the times I have watched him play. Andy Murray really

:56:31. > :56:32.looking sharp. He has put up with what Brown has to offer. For the

:56:33. > :57:26.most part, not pressed. That is Jamie Delgado, he will be

:57:27. > :57:29.happy with how Murray has been getting round the court. He looked

:57:30. > :57:47.sharp in practice, prior to the tournament.

:57:48. > :58:03.Big target, simple backswing. Maybe he could have done a bit more of

:58:04. > :58:18.that. Are you implying Brown should have

:58:19. > :58:22.taken more risks today? I don't think that's a risk, it is a big

:58:23. > :58:28.target and he has hit it up the line with a backhand, that, to me, is not

:58:29. > :58:47.a risk. That's how people can win them or are winning the matches.

:58:48. > :58:56.I don't know if he is a bit weary from his last match where he had to

:58:57. > :59:01.come from behind but as this match has progressed, he seems to be

:59:02. > :59:07.struggling with the spring in his legs. Explosion not really there. A

:59:08. > :59:59.bit of physical and mental fatigue. He will be happy with his pace,

:00:00. > :00:06.averaging 120 mph on his first serve. Didn't match that on any of

:00:07. > :00:27.his matches on his race to the title last year.

:00:28. > :00:35.He never does the same thing twice, Brown. You felt like, that first

:00:36. > :00:40.point is good, let's try it until Murray counters that. Don't do the

:00:41. > :01:11.thing that worked! Too easy! It was a pretty late challenge. An

:01:12. > :01:58.awful long time. Too long. I don't think it will matter, but...

:01:59. > :02:24.I think he is challenging to slow down Brown a little.

:02:25. > :02:28.It looks like he has another match scheduled tonight. Some exhibition

:02:29. > :02:44.somewhere! When it works, it is certainly

:02:45. > :03:00.entertaining. We talk about good length in tennis.

:03:01. > :03:08.Again, going back to his win over Rafa, 50% of his balls inside the

:03:09. > :03:11.service line and ended up winning the match, so he defies convention

:03:12. > :03:49.in terms of how you think about the game at times.

:03:50. > :03:58.The perfect return against the incoming player.

:03:59. > :04:09.I think a lot of it has to do with the quality Murray's playing. But he

:04:10. > :04:14.has tapped out. In the last half-hour, it looks like he is

:04:15. > :04:18.playing, if possibly, even faster than in the beginning. And the legs

:04:19. > :04:22.seem to have gone so he cannot move to the ball which makes the lower

:04:23. > :04:30.percentage shots more difficult and risky. There is where you have a

:04:31. > :04:41.beating taking place on Centre Court. A couple more games may be,

:04:42. > :04:47.an extra one for Dustin Brown. Fabio Fognini. They have not met on a

:04:48. > :04:57.grass court before. That is who will be waiting for Andy Murray. Murray

:04:58. > :05:02.Fabio Fognini on the clay court, a different kettle of fish but Murray

:05:03. > :05:12.on this surface, playing at this level, including beating Murray. Did

:05:13. > :05:19.he beat him in Davis Cup? Andy beat him. Happy to be playing him on

:05:20. > :06:21.grass. No question. Always guarding against any

:06:22. > :06:58.complacency, Murray. The first moment relapse of

:06:59. > :07:03.concentration. Murray must have heard asked talking about Fabio

:07:04. > :07:31.Fognini in the next round. -- heard us.

:07:32. > :08:16.Exactly. After two doubles to come up with that.

:08:17. > :08:23.No question that Dustin Brown remains true to his beliefs about

:08:24. > :08:24.how he wants to play this game. It has been a colourful journey, as

:08:25. > :08:35.well, to the professional ranks. The camper van his parents bought

:08:36. > :08:37.him at the age of 20 so he could travel around Europe and save on

:08:38. > :09:17.accommodation costs. He will be staying in slightly

:09:18. > :09:22.better accommodation, Dustin Brown, given the success he has had in

:09:23. > :09:26.recent years, but a shorter stay in the capital than he would have

:09:27. > :09:28.liked. And a shorter stay on Centre Court that he would have liked, as

:09:29. > :10:42.well. The hour and 30-minute mark takes

:10:43. > :11:03.over on Centre Court. The drop shot out of trouble out

:11:04. > :11:16.wide. He gave it away, you could see him coming. It is not often you see

:11:17. > :11:25.a match half the length of a women's match. Johanna Konta and Donna Vekic

:11:26. > :11:49.played three hours and ten minutes. That is the Mercy held. -- mercy

:11:50. > :11:54.hold. Murray has come in and done exactly what he needed to do. When

:11:55. > :11:57.you see the top guns do that you get more comfortable on their chances

:11:58. > :12:07.and he is back close to where he wants to be to have a shot at

:12:08. > :12:11.winning this. Two matches ideal. The first-round under his belt after

:12:12. > :12:15.ordinary preparation coming into the event and a step up in class against

:12:16. > :12:22.Dustin Brown, a dangerous, in theory, opponents. To win in

:12:23. > :12:29.straight sets is a good foundation moving forward. Do you think there

:12:30. > :12:36.is a big difference in the speed of the courts here and at Queen's? I

:12:37. > :12:44.think there is a big difference. Last year, it is interesting, there

:12:45. > :12:50.was talk about the courts playing quicker. When you look at rally

:12:51. > :12:56.lengths. Four at Queen's and five and at times six for Murray here at

:12:57. > :12:59.Wimbledon. Whether that makes a difference for Murray in terms of

:13:00. > :13:05.getting through. Huge success at Queen's. He has won it more than

:13:06. > :13:13.anyone else. I do not know if that matters a whole lot. And it does not

:13:14. > :13:17.matter even now that he lost in the first round.

:13:18. > :13:21.I do not think that will have much of an impact on what happens at this

:13:22. > :14:12.Wimbledon. The body serve. Able to take a nice,

:14:13. > :14:59.free swing at the ball. Murray kept in the point. Made him

:15:00. > :15:05.suffer. No need to do that at this stage.

:15:06. > :16:09.It has been a swift dismissal of the challenge from the German.

:16:10. > :16:23.That is how he started it and that is how he ends it with the drop shot

:16:24. > :16:27.return. Murray with a big smile. Not just delighted to get through but

:16:28. > :16:33.the sort of match he would enjoy being a part. The outcome was never

:16:34. > :16:43.in doubt. Lovely moments from Dustin Brown, but Murray were simply out

:16:44. > :16:52.there. He was going to give you a level that he assumed was correct

:16:53. > :16:56.that Brown could not hang with. Brown came out strong and was doing

:16:57. > :17:02.a lot of good things and playing the as well as he could but could not

:17:03. > :17:06.make much of an impact, down 3-4 and that was when Murray took it up

:17:07. > :17:13.another gear and from that point, when he broke out the new balls, it

:17:14. > :17:18.became extremely one-sided. He is one of those guys you would say you

:17:19. > :17:24.do not really want to play, but after you have played him and beaten

:17:25. > :17:28.him as convincingly as Murray has, that is when the big smile comes out

:17:29. > :17:44.on the face. You know, that was all right. Thank you.

:17:45. > :17:50.And he will have thoroughly enjoyed his time out there. It is a rare

:17:51. > :17:59.occurrence for these players to get out on Centre Court. He was not

:18:00. > :18:03.expected to win and to be honest he was outclassed for the large

:18:04. > :18:09.majority, but got the opportunity to play the world's best player at

:18:10. > :18:12.Wimbledon and it has been a wonderful journey for Dustin Brown

:18:13. > :18:21.to get to the professional ranks. A fairly unique one and a unique brand

:18:22. > :18:28.of tennis. Murray on Friday against the Italian, Fabio Fognini. That

:18:29. > :18:32.would be downright normal. Fabio Fognini is a character in his own

:18:33. > :18:40.right, but compared to Brown, he is pretty much a monk out there. The

:18:41. > :18:48.style is totally different. Flashy, expressive, emotional. He plays

:18:49. > :18:56.fast, at times. You do not know what is going to happen. Certainly grass

:18:57. > :18:57.will be his least favourite surface, Fabio Fognini, coming into that

:18:58. > :19:10.match. Brown had opportunities, which will

:19:11. > :19:16.be the only thing Murray will be concerned about, first serve

:19:17. > :19:20.percentage is under 50%. But apart from that, it was perfection on

:19:21. > :19:24.Centre Court once again. We will be hearing from the winner of that

:19:25. > :19:32.second round match. Andy Murray will be chatting.

:19:33. > :19:39.Well done. By the levels of unpredictability being predicted for

:19:40. > :19:43.this match, how straightforward was that? After the beginning... He

:19:44. > :19:51.started very well and was coming up with great drop volleys Andrew Ni

:19:52. > :19:56.going for the returns. Once I got the break in the first set I felt

:19:57. > :19:59.momentum was with me and I saw the shots he was going to play quicker

:20:00. > :20:05.which allowed me to get to some of the drop volleys and come up with

:20:06. > :20:14.passing shots and I played well. What pleased you most. Until right

:20:15. > :20:18.at the end of the match, the last three games, I did not serve well

:20:19. > :20:25.but the rest of the match I served well and got three points. He was

:20:26. > :20:32.not able to attack my second serve and so that was positive. I moved

:20:33. > :20:36.pretty well against guys who played drop shots and come forward you need

:20:37. > :20:44.to move well and I did that. There is no hip under more scrutiny than

:20:45. > :20:49.yours. How is it? It is OK. I have moved well the first couple of

:20:50. > :20:54.matches and it has not affected me. I have had good practices. I feel

:20:55. > :21:01.good. Hopefully it will stay that way. So far, I am happy with how I

:21:02. > :21:09.feel. You have dropped seven games so far. How pleased you with that?

:21:10. > :21:16.Against two guys who have tough game styles. Not easy to read. I did

:21:17. > :21:21.pretty well. I concentrated well on my own service games which is

:21:22. > :21:27.positive, and put a lot of returns back in play, which was positive

:21:28. > :21:30.today. I returned better. It has been a good start and hopefully

:21:31. > :21:36.we'll keep it going. Well done. Thank you.

:21:37. > :21:42.SUE BARKER: It has been a good start and this was a tricky match. Dustin

:21:43. > :21:45.Brown plays unbelievable attacking tennis but Murray stamped his

:21:46. > :21:51.authority on the match to win in straight sets in one hour and 36

:21:52. > :21:59.minutes. That is half the time Jo Konta was on court against Donna

:22:00. > :22:04.Vekic. All going well. The defending champion is through. Boris, that is

:22:05. > :22:09.the way to do it. He looked strong. We argued Monday morning how fit is

:22:10. > :22:16.he? Can he handle the physical problems he apparently has. A couple

:22:17. > :22:21.of days later he is looking strong. He is playing good tennis. Difficult

:22:22. > :22:28.opponents, you do not get a rhythm, and he handle both with brilliance.

:22:29. > :22:34.Can we officially call him a limpless Murray? In the points. But

:22:35. > :22:40.in between the points he looks like he has a limp going on. When you saw

:22:41. > :22:46.him reacting, moving forward, Dustin Brown hitting drop shots. It puts

:22:47. > :22:51.stress on his joints. To see Murray moving well is a good sign and to

:22:52. > :22:55.see how consistently he served. He was not thrilled with the last

:22:56. > :23:01.couple of service games but he only lost ten points on serve in three

:23:02. > :23:03.sets, a great foundation on a grass court and to come through both

:23:04. > :23:19.matches in straight sets is a good start. We do not worry

:23:20. > :23:20.about how he walks between the points. During the points he was

:23:21. > :23:23.getting everything. He looked strong. Before the match... Dustin

:23:24. > :23:26.Brown is accomplished on grass. He likes the big stage. I thought it

:23:27. > :23:34.could be a real match but once Andy started breaking Brown's serve it

:23:35. > :23:41.was a one-way street. He looked in top form. Even Ivan Lendl will be

:23:42. > :23:46.happy, Tim? That is asking a lot! He might be happy but he will not start

:23:47. > :23:52.smiling at. When you come into a tournament with aches and pains.

:23:53. > :23:58.Over two weeks. Five set matches, he did not want to get stuck into an

:23:59. > :24:02.epic match, spending extra time out. To dominate and come through a

:24:03. > :24:07.tricky opponent is a good sign but the challenges will get greater

:24:08. > :24:12.moving forward for Murray. We talked about needing matches under his belt

:24:13. > :24:16.having not had matches coming into Wimbledon. He has had it now. For

:24:17. > :24:23.him the tournament looks different than it did on Monday. Fabio

:24:24. > :24:27.Fognini, different style, the baseline, longer rallies. But we

:24:28. > :24:32.should not talk about the hip. I do not think he has a problem. In the

:24:33. > :24:37.interview he said he was moving well. We should focus on the

:24:38. > :24:41.strengths, not the physical weakness. I will try, but I think

:24:42. > :24:47.the hip will get a mention on Friday. Fabio Fognini, he had

:24:48. > :24:54.trouble with him on clay but should be OK on the grass? The surface is

:24:55. > :25:00.defining. They played six times, 3-3. He beat him in Davis Cup and in

:25:01. > :25:04.Rome in the Masters Series. It helps Fabio Fognini, he knows he has

:25:05. > :25:08.beaten Murray before but they have never played on grass and with

:25:09. > :25:15.Murray's grass court pedigree and the support of the crowd, he should

:25:16. > :25:21.be OK. What a day for the Brits. Four through to the third round, the

:25:22. > :25:29.first time in 20 years. To see Jo Konta playing in difficult

:25:30. > :25:32.circumstances as well as she did, playing Donna Vekic, who she lost

:25:33. > :25:34.two in the final at Nottingham, that will be good for her confidence.

:25:35. > :25:41.Aljaz Bedene doing well. Heather Watson has found form. A good run at

:25:42. > :25:45.Eastbourne beating top players. It has given us something to smile

:25:46. > :25:52.about. We are waiting Rafael Nadal, he is next on this court. But we can

:25:53. > :25:58.show you what is happening elsewhere. Venus Williams has taken

:25:59. > :26:04.the second set 6-4 and is a break of serve up in the third set. That is

:26:05. > :26:11.the featured match on the red button.

:26:12. > :26:20.Petra Kvitova has just left the court. This is her opponent, Madison

:26:21. > :26:26.Brengle, who has a leading head-to-head 2-1 against Kvitova,

:26:27. > :26:31.and she has taken the opening set. Trouble for Petra Kvitova as she

:26:32. > :26:32.continues her comeback. You can follow that on the BBC Sport

:26:33. > :26:41.website. We are ready for our third match on

:26:42. > :26:48.Centre Court, featuring Rafa Nadal the resurgent Rafa is back as he

:26:49. > :26:58.showed in round one. # Don't call it a comeback. Listen

:26:59. > :27:13.to the base go boom. COMMENTATOR: That is the way to do

:27:14. > :27:59.it. # I'm going to take this city by

:28:00. > :28:03.storm and I'm just getting warm. That is Rafa Nadal, a man who is

:28:04. > :28:10.short of grass court tennis. Beware the rest.

:28:11. > :28:15.He was in awesome form. Tim has departed. I think he had a committee

:28:16. > :28:21.meeting or something. Pat Cash is here. Lovely of you to join us. John

:28:22. > :28:29.Millman was watching a lot of big shots going past in that match. John

:28:30. > :28:36.is a great solid tour player. He has had injuries. He has done well over

:28:37. > :28:40.John, over the years, an Australian battler who has come through. He has

:28:41. > :28:47.had injuries and this was a bit out of his league but Rafa, it is the

:28:48. > :28:51.unknown. There are many unknowns in the tournament but how is Rafa going

:28:52. > :28:57.to be if he gets through the first week? It is enticing.

:28:58. > :29:02.Dangerous. We will see how he goes today. Donald Young is a tricky

:29:03. > :29:07.player, playing his best tennis and he should be a good grass court

:29:08. > :29:15.player. He has a tricky left-handed serve. He reminds me of Marcelo

:29:16. > :29:19.Rios. Rafa looks like a prize fighter, keen to get out on Centre

:29:20. > :29:25.Court. Come on, let me get out there! He must be full of

:29:26. > :29:30.confidence. The highlight of his year, his tenth title at the French

:29:31. > :29:33.Open. This is all the gravy coming. He will get a big cheer, I am sure.

:29:34. > :29:52.CHEERING Yes, a huge ovation for both

:29:53. > :29:57.players. Rafa is a popular player all over the world and it has been

:29:58. > :30:01.incredible the comeback of Rafa and Roger Federer when eight months ago

:30:02. > :30:06.we were thinking where they would be and they are playing their best

:30:07. > :30:10.tennis. Last year with Roger going out in the semifinal and he not even

:30:11. > :30:14.playing because of injury, we thought we had seen the best of them

:30:15. > :30:21.and 12 months on, they are the best players of the year so far. Roger

:30:22. > :30:25.from points this year, he is number one and Rafa is number two. It is

:30:26. > :30:31.great to have them back at the top of the game. Carlos Moya is working

:30:32. > :30:35.with Rafa and said he is trying to keep him off the court because he is

:30:36. > :30:43.such a workhorse, he wants to be out there hours. He said he wants him to

:30:44. > :30:48.be more aggressive. He does work, you have never seen anyone work as

:30:49. > :30:52.hard as Rafa. All top players work hard, but he gets satisfaction and

:30:53. > :30:57.confidence by getting a lot of balls. Now he has the confidence and

:30:58. > :31:03.is hitting cleanly... Watcher was different, injured but still

:31:04. > :31:09.performed well in Grand Slams. Rafa almost disappeared for two years. It

:31:10. > :31:15.looks like he was on the way out. Roger, OK, he got injured and we did

:31:16. > :31:20.not know how he would come back. He hits the ball cleanly. He came back

:31:21. > :31:24.with an amazing performance in the Australian Open. For rapporteur

:31:25. > :31:29.comeback like this, I was thinking I do not want to see this champion

:31:30. > :31:35.fading away. He is not hitting the ball cleanly, his serve is not as

:31:36. > :31:40.good. He is not as quick as he was, and to turn around, six months, he

:31:41. > :31:43.is one guy who constantly proves me wrong. I get it wrong quite a lot!

:31:44. > :31:50.He does it all the time to be. Toni Nadal got a lot of stick from

:31:51. > :32:07.people. Rafa Nadal today has a different

:32:08. > :32:13.serve, he plays more aggressive, he is a different player than he was

:32:14. > :32:18.two years ago. If it is possible, it is almost as if he has got more

:32:19. > :32:23.racket head speed. That is hard to believe. He has added some weight to

:32:24. > :32:27.his racket. That will give you more power. As long as you can swing it.

:32:28. > :32:32.If it gets too heavy so you can't swing it, then you have got

:32:33. > :32:40.problems. Rafa has a decent bicep on him! Ten grams extract doesn't sound

:32:41. > :32:48.like much but it is actually quite significant. He said his second

:32:49. > :32:52.serve was chewed up by Federer. Certainly in the spring at Indian

:32:53. > :32:57.wells and in Miami. Roger was hitting winner after winner. I think

:32:58. > :33:02.he realised that he needed to up it a little bit. Otherwise these guys

:33:03. > :33:08.will start chewing up my second serve. A little bit of extra power

:33:09. > :33:13.and weight on the racket has seemed to have worked. What about Donald

:33:14. > :33:20.Young? Playing really good tennis. How will he heard Rafa? He has had

:33:21. > :33:26.one of the better years of his career. A bit too much pressure

:33:27. > :33:35.early on. He has had a nice year so far. He played last week. He lost

:33:36. > :33:38.the Novak Djokovic in semifinals. He has put together a nice round and he

:33:39. > :33:44.is no slouch, this will be a proper match. It certainly will be. He was

:33:45. > :33:50.a junior champion here at Wimbledon and he so far hasn't fulfilled his

:33:51. > :33:55.potential at this tournament. From the United States, Donald Young.

:33:56. > :34:00.Donald Young said he wanted to win all Grand Slams more than once. It

:34:01. > :34:07.was no flight of fancy. The American had just won the prestigious 2003

:34:08. > :34:14.under 16 orange bowl. I really like playing. It feels good. By 16, a

:34:15. > :34:24.number one junior in the world. He won Wimbledon junior title in 2005.

:34:25. > :34:31.With success came the deserved hype, endorsements and agents. Young was

:34:32. > :34:37.labelled the sport's next superstar. It was not to be. He is about to

:34:38. > :34:42.turn 28 and yet his career and world ranking in men's tennis is 38. He

:34:43. > :34:49.represented the US in the Davis Cup but only in the second round of

:34:50. > :34:56.Wimbledon for the second time in seven attempts. Young the younger

:34:57. > :35:01.was a formidable talent of amazing potential, we are left to wonder why

:35:02. > :35:02.Young the elder has not fulfilled that promise. Perhaps him most of

:35:03. > :35:11.all. You were both outstanding juniors

:35:12. > :35:22.and it is tough when you get pressure on you at such a young age.

:35:23. > :35:27.I was fortunate that I Coober Pedy Mane's -- I was fortunate that I

:35:28. > :35:32.could play in the men's at 16 and 17. You are supposed to earn your

:35:33. > :35:43.money on the court, not off the court. He is unfortunately a player

:35:44. > :35:50.who sets an example for what not to do. He is a nice guy. He really

:35:51. > :35:54.tries hard. He did carve a nice career out of professional

:35:55. > :36:01.sponsorship. I think he thought it would be an easy run through.

:36:02. > :36:18.He lost the fight. You could see him throwing his racket, screaming at

:36:19. > :36:22.his team and his box and he really didn't have the heart or the ticket

:36:23. > :36:26.for the fight. I think he is warming to the fact that it is not an easy

:36:27. > :36:32.run for him and he has to dig deep. He has won some good matches lately.

:36:33. > :36:34.Typically you would say, against Donald Young, if you hang in there,

:36:35. > :36:51.he will melt down. Where can he hurt Rafa? Rafa is a

:36:52. > :36:56.big practice horse so he loves to practice on the main court and he

:36:57. > :37:00.can't do that here. So little bit of adjustment. Young is good

:37:01. > :37:04.all-rounder. He has played a tournament before, he has more

:37:05. > :37:09.matches than Rafa. Young will be comfortable right away and Rafa will

:37:10. > :37:12.find his time to get comfortable. He has a good, sneaky left-handed

:37:13. > :37:22.serve. I could see why he had been regarded

:37:23. > :37:32.as the next big thing. He has a big shot. If Rafa gets to the net, Rafa

:37:33. > :37:37.will have too much power. The first set could tell us how long the match

:37:38. > :37:43.will last. You know this tennis court very well, it does look like

:37:44. > :37:51.it is playing quite Sloane. That's Max

:37:52. > :38:00.with the Rafa footwork, you see him may be sliding on the side of it, so

:38:01. > :38:06.it will be interesting to feels more comfortable in the first couple of

:38:07. > :38:09.games. Rafa says it is about getting set for his shots when he doesn't

:38:10. > :38:15.feel comfortable with his footwork. He hasn't felt comfortable on grass

:38:16. > :38:21.for a few years. It will be interesting, I think you will be

:38:22. > :38:26.determined to change that. I've been reflecting on who it would help if

:38:27. > :38:30.this weather continues. If Rafa could get through the first week,

:38:31. > :38:35.who would it help the most? I think it would be Rafa more than any of

:38:36. > :38:39.the other players. We will see, a long way to go and this will be an

:38:40. > :38:44.interesting match. Congratulations, as we said at the top of the

:38:45. > :38:52.programme, 30 years since Pat Cash won Keir on Centre Court. Beating

:38:53. > :39:03.Ivan Lendl. Rate memories. -- great memories.

:39:04. > :39:12.It is a beautiful sunset in the making. Bernard Tomic, the Aussie. A

:39:13. > :39:17.lot of press about him saying he gets bored playing tennis these

:39:18. > :39:22.days. No one tires of watching this man plying his trade. Wonderful to

:39:23. > :39:26.see Nadal back at Wimbledon, they are pleased. Pretty much fully fit.

:39:27. > :39:34.Three-month break at the end of last year. Roger Federer's was six months

:39:35. > :39:38.and it has rejuvenated the careers. A wonderful final they played in

:39:39. > :39:44.Melbourne. Looking forward to seeing that again. For the first time since

:39:45. > :39:52.Wimbledon in 2013, Nadal has chosen not to play a warm up tournament.

:39:53. > :39:56.His body was tired and he wanted to completely re-coop. The way he

:39:57. > :40:01.started in the first round against Millman, he is sharp and keen and

:40:02. > :40:08.looking for his first round since he was runner-up in 2011. For Donald

:40:09. > :40:14.Young, when he walked out on the court, he didn't look anywhere other

:40:15. > :40:18.than in the stands, at the top. Everywhere, to try to soak up his

:40:19. > :40:19.first time on this amazing court. Boris Becker said Wimbledon changed

:40:20. > :40:32.his life so much, he calls it home. Donald Young takes on the great

:40:33. > :40:38.champion, two times Wimbledon champion, Rafael Nadal.

:40:39. > :41:02.That is not the start you want. Do you remember your first match on

:41:03. > :41:18.this court? The sun is really low. Difficult to

:41:19. > :41:28.pick up. Difficult to serve. See how Rafa handles it. He doesn't.

:41:29. > :43:04.Five aces for Young in his opener. The first couple of games, always

:43:05. > :43:49.nerve-racking. A very special court. He would dearly love to hold this

:43:50. > :44:16.opening service game, it almost goes without saying. Break point.

:44:17. > :44:25.The perfect start for Nadal. Yes, he is a practice phenomenon. I know

:44:26. > :44:31.from the other Grand Slams he lost, he would go to Centre Court and

:44:32. > :44:34.practice day after day. It is not possible here so also unknown

:44:35. > :44:40.territory for him. He didn't play last year. Has not been successful

:44:41. > :44:46.at Wimbledon for a number of years. I'm sure he feels a little edgy as

:44:47. > :44:54.well. But making your position clear right away eases the feeling.

:44:55. > :45:05.A towel either side to take less time. There has been a focus at the

:45:06. > :45:08.French Open, they gave him a warning a couple of times. He has to focus

:45:09. > :45:35.on his seconds between opponents. A lot of people ask me, why is Nadal

:45:36. > :45:38.coming back? Of course he is healthy. You watch his serve today,

:45:39. > :45:52.the speed and accuracy. He has improved a lot. His overall

:45:53. > :46:00.game is a lot more proactive and aggressive. The forehand has a

:46:01. > :46:11.better follow-through. He has got a handy forehand himself, Young.

:46:12. > :46:21.Not quite as good as that one, though.

:46:22. > :46:26.You can see that when a way he hits it and it follows through forward to

:46:27. > :46:34.the net and that is something we haven't seen at all from Rafa.

:46:35. > :46:52.Hitting the ball on the line, still a few feet behind the baseline.

:46:53. > :47:00.A natural right-hander, Nadal. Donald Young writes right-handed.

:47:01. > :47:06.Both lefties, obviously! I saw Rafa Nadal in Majorca for the first time

:47:07. > :47:29.and he played with both hands. He looks, like his outfit, he just

:47:30. > :47:34.looks so fresh. He has had an incredible comeback as well.

:47:35. > :47:52.Everyone talks about Roger Federer rightly so but he is right behind.

:47:53. > :47:59.Enough to win at the French Open and in Majorca.

:48:00. > :48:04.There were pictures of him on a boat navigating the island. Anyone would

:48:05. > :48:15.be fresh coming back from that! He said it is a pretty quick boat as

:48:16. > :48:40.well. Another shot that he has fastly

:48:41. > :48:50.improved. Accelerating power. Look at that, he

:48:51. > :49:28.steps forward and bang. Who would have thought we would see

:49:29. > :49:52.Nadal slicing an approach. Both got the natural leftie

:49:53. > :50:10.outswinger. Nadal has had to work hard on it over the years.

:50:11. > :50:17.Quite amazing to think that Nadal, the first time he made the final

:50:18. > :50:23.here, at Wimbledon, as a pro, he played unless band ten matches on

:50:24. > :50:27.the surface. Can you imagine anyone doing that on the clay? He is such a

:50:28. > :50:32.quick learner and he is always looking to improve. He goes on the

:50:33. > :50:36.practice court every single day for the trout or five hours. Doesn't get

:50:37. > :50:45.tired, just wants to get better and better.

:50:46. > :50:52.It is a prime example, for some of the younger guys who wanted to be as

:50:53. > :50:56.good as Rafa Nadal, there are no short cuts. It is called work,

:50:57. > :51:07.discipline, repetition, that is your way to the top. Just listen to the

:51:08. > :51:09.buzz around Centre Court, people pleased he is getting back to his

:51:10. > :51:15.best. He is such an ambassador. On and off

:51:16. > :51:33.the court. The whole family love the sport. His

:51:34. > :51:51.uncle from Barcelona. Rafa Nadal is a Real Madrid fan.

:51:52. > :52:05.He is one of the best volley players on tour.

:52:06. > :52:41.He has a good feel and he likes a drop shot.

:52:42. > :53:11.Good point by Young. Taking the initiative away from Nadal.

:53:12. > :53:24.Shadows nearly all the way across the court. Tough for a lot of fans

:53:25. > :53:38.in that corner. A lot of people complaining about

:53:39. > :53:49.the sun. A beautiful, hot day, the forecast is pretty good.

:53:50. > :53:55.Since they built the roof, the weather seems to have got better! A

:53:56. > :54:26.100 million bill. A solid hold. Just plays a bit

:54:27. > :55:59.easier when you break up. When he made his debut, Donald

:56:00. > :56:04.Young, in 2008, he was 18 and in the top 100. All that was talked about

:56:05. > :56:09.him as a young junior champion here, the next big thing perhaps, it was

:56:10. > :56:13.all going so well. It is tough pressure, he has had a seesaw time

:56:14. > :56:17.pretty much ever since. It is difficult when you are a teenager

:56:18. > :56:25.and the situation is put upon you. Not everyone can handle that. Big

:56:26. > :56:31.contracts, the great American hope, rightly so. He was the best junior.

:56:32. > :56:35.Then to come into the men's, it is a different game. It won't be easy.

:56:36. > :56:39.Donald Young thought it would be like everyone does. Then you have a

:56:40. > :56:45.loss of confidence. People start doubting him. As a young man, it is

:56:46. > :56:57.difficult to cope with all of that. But you are stuck with it. He has a

:56:58. > :57:02.tight-knit family. He is not a top ten player but that doesn't mean he

:57:03. > :57:06.is a bad player. He got back into the top 50s, only five spots of his

:57:07. > :57:15.career high. That was five years ago. He comes back every year. And

:57:16. > :57:17.you get better. It is not easy. New generations are coming knocking at

:57:18. > :57:21.the door and you have keep improving. A lot of talent comes and

:57:22. > :57:31.goes but he has stuck at it. Reach the final of the French Open

:57:32. > :57:42.doubles. Big stage at the end of the

:57:43. > :58:11.fortnight. The locker room is empty. Must feel weird.

:58:12. > :58:17.Second set, second service was up 108 miles an hour. Didn't serve one

:58:18. > :58:36.double fault in his first round. Another area he improved, that

:58:37. > :58:40.second serve. Playing with a bit more speed and accuracy. The top

:58:41. > :58:42.guys otherwise take advantage. There was always a weakness in his second

:58:43. > :59:18.serve on grass. Donald Young struggling with his

:59:19. > :59:34.son. -- Donald Young struggling with the sun.

:59:35. > :59:57.He must have loved starting this year out of pain. First time. In a

:59:58. > :00:03.while. He had to take last summer off.

:00:04. > :00:10.He took the whole autumn off, to get healthy.

:00:11. > :00:25.Started the year in Abu Dhabi. He won the tournament there.

:00:26. > :00:40.He had Federer break up in fifth set. It was one of the best moments

:00:41. > :00:53.in Roger Federer's career, he said, recovering from that.

:00:54. > :01:46.He is never afraid to express himself, Donald Young. At Eastbourne

:01:47. > :01:51.and Queen's when it was not going right he would scream at his mother,

:01:52. > :02:03.cheer for me Laudrup or leave. She cheered ex-Commissioner Mark Poor

:02:04. > :02:12.mother. Here she is. -- cheer for me louder.

:02:13. > :02:56.A tough service game but he comes through it.

:02:57. > :03:12.Look at the flight of that. He stays three or four feet behind that. I

:03:13. > :03:15.heard that it will be Tony's last year on the tour. I hope he changes

:03:16. > :03:39.his mind because this man needs him. Smiles all round. The speed is

:03:40. > :03:43.there. He looks rejuvenated. It looks like he has been left in the

:03:44. > :03:51.box too long and he has been let out! That is nice. They are both

:03:52. > :03:59.looking to get up to the net when they can. And of course the grass is

:04:00. > :04:03.maybe a bit slower, but it is still a grass court and it is difficult to

:04:04. > :04:17.move from side to side and the way to win a point is often to get up to

:04:18. > :04:23.the net. His serve has got an amazing sound on it, a crack. Not

:04:24. > :05:10.the tallest of men, but a great technique.

:05:11. > :05:19.It is always the relentless power of Rafael Nadal that gets you in the

:05:20. > :05:42.end. He He has settled well after that

:05:43. > :05:44.opening game, Donald Young. Just the one break. A good tennis match now.

:05:45. > :06:00.Good points. You do serve there at your peril,

:06:01. > :06:25.don't you? It is a good mixture of direction

:06:26. > :06:32.and spin. That is his favourite corner on the deuce side. He has had

:06:33. > :06:59.a couple of aces already. A bit of self coaching there.

:07:00. > :07:24.Telling him it should have been a forehand. Good camera work.

:07:25. > :07:36.That was a surprising miss. I am watching Rafa. This is great, ma'am,

:07:37. > :08:08.thanks! Well done, Donald Young. Enjoying

:08:09. > :08:21.that seat right now. He was a bit nervous when he first sat on it.

:08:22. > :08:27.Rafael Nadal takes his time. But whenever he has had a warning he has

:08:28. > :08:30.speeded up. It is very seldom in his career that he has had a second

:08:31. > :08:35.warning. It has not been followed through. Do you think it should have

:08:36. > :08:47.been for the sake of the opponent more? Give discretion two Rafael

:08:48. > :08:52.Nadal. I do not think he does it on purpose. It is his rhythm, it is how

:08:53. > :09:02.he feels comfortable. But he is pushing it sometimes. But he has

:09:03. > :09:06.been stuck in his routine for over 15 years and it is difficult to

:09:07. > :09:15.adapt to a faster movement. They are changing the rules to speed up the

:09:16. > :09:25.game, which I like. It is just his habit. In Madrid later this year

:09:26. > :09:32.they are using the clock. It will be an interesting experiment. New balls

:09:33. > :09:37.in play with the sole break achieved at the beginning of the match.

:09:38. > :09:55.Donald Young chose to serve. That wasn't the best of drop shots.

:09:56. > :10:51.A quick recovery at the net. Those are his habits, it is what he

:10:52. > :11:47.does. I like that. I am pretty sure some

:11:48. > :11:53.of the other favourites will take notice of Rafa at the net. They will

:11:54. > :12:01.not admit it, but they will all watch it.

:12:02. > :12:27.A change of racket for Nadal after serving with the new balls. Each to

:12:28. > :12:40.their own. Young is serving to stay in this opening set.

:12:41. > :13:44.Six feet tall. Who is this guy in the back? Another leftie. I have

:13:45. > :14:01.seen him somewhere. REFEREE: Mr Young is challenging the

:14:02. > :14:25.call on the service line. Mr Young has two challenges

:14:26. > :14:38.remaining. You might as well use them.

:14:39. > :14:45.14 points at the net. It feels like more than that. That is between

:14:46. > :15:44.them. Boris, when you used to sit down on

:15:45. > :15:49.this court and when you got up and you were either serving for a set or

:15:50. > :15:55.a Mac, what did you tell yourself? Play it point by point. Think about

:15:56. > :16:01.what was successful before. Why am I up a break? What is the service

:16:02. > :16:07.pattern that I use? What is my opponent's strong side with the

:16:08. > :16:12.return. Do not think it is a match of the score line, focus on every

:16:13. > :16:15.point. Does that become more difficult when you serve for the

:16:16. > :16:24.Wimbledon title? Against Kevin Curran? Very. You forget to breathe.

:16:25. > :16:31.You can't walk properly. But it is all in the eyes of the beholder. You

:16:32. > :16:40.have to keep repeating what you do and not get intimidated by the

:16:41. > :16:55.occasion. I do not think I have ever seen Nadal sit still at the change

:16:56. > :17:02.of ends. Always energetic. There is a real buzz around this court. He

:17:03. > :17:11.has not been to the third round here since he made the final six years

:17:12. > :17:12.ago. A few wins against him with injury last year. Nadal is serving

:17:13. > :17:48.for the opening set. And again. I am repeating myself. He

:17:49. > :18:05.is finding his luck at the net. Seven from nine now.

:18:06. > :19:07.I'm very confident hold. SUE BARKER: He takes the opening set 6-4. Let's

:19:08. > :19:15.show you what has been happening elsewhere. On number one Court,

:19:16. > :19:27.Venus Williams is involved in a real struggle with Wang Qiang from China.

:19:28. > :19:33.A big smile from Venus out on number one Court. It was a real battle, but

:19:34. > :19:40.she is still in the tournament and she will be back for round three. We

:19:41. > :19:46.are moving away from Centre Court. If you want to watch it, you can

:19:47. > :19:51.watch it on the red button. One of the big favourites for the title,

:19:52. > :19:55.Petra Kvitova, is in real trouble against Madison Bradl of the United

:19:56. > :20:01.States, a player who has beaten her twice out of three matches in the

:20:02. > :20:04.last couple of years. The American is 4-2 up in the final set. --

:20:05. > :20:20.Madison Brendel. It looks like her tank is just about

:20:21. > :20:46.empty now. She had to rivet second set to take it 6-1.

:20:47. > :20:53.There have been many mistakes from Petra Kvitova and it has not been

:20:54. > :21:06.easy asking. She has just asked for the trainer.

:21:07. > :21:23.Petra Kvitova wins the rally, but she does not like rallies like that.

:21:24. > :21:24.Madison Brengle does not bring strength to the court, she brings

:21:25. > :21:49.Gyle. A rare mistake from Brengle. She has

:21:50. > :22:09.been pretty secure right the way through.

:22:10. > :22:17.She measured that perfectly. You never know in this match. I saw her

:22:18. > :22:23.first-round match against Johanna Larsson and she was remarkable and

:22:24. > :22:28.she played very well. Here she has had one to refix set -- one great

:22:29. > :22:59.set. She has called for the trainer. If

:23:00. > :23:01.she can hold on here, maybe the trainer can do some magical things

:23:02. > :23:46.and she might survive. Petra Kvitova was one of the joint

:23:47. > :23:55.favourites for the tournament, but she has not played like that this

:23:56. > :24:00.afternoon. Madison Brengle had a win over Serena Williams at the start of

:24:01. > :24:29.the year. Petra Kvitova does not know when the attack is coming.

:24:30. > :24:46.She felt she had to finish the rally on that shot. One of the longest

:24:47. > :25:22.rallies. Ten shots. Her box is willing her forward.

:25:23. > :25:31.It is so key for her to hold here. Otherwise Brengle will feel she is

:25:32. > :26:07.very nearly home. One of the problems we says Ishii

:26:08. > :26:16.has not been able to grip the racket as well as she could even on Monday.

:26:17. > :26:19.There was so much damage to her hand, her nerves were hurt, every

:26:20. > :26:52.finger was in trouble really and gripping has been an issue.

:26:53. > :27:03.She set it up perfectly and normally she would bury that. She just cannot

:27:04. > :27:07.trust herself here. There is the surgeon who did the job on her hand.

:27:08. > :27:19.He was there on Centre Court on Monday. That is the man who told her

:27:20. > :27:36.it was 50-50 if she would ever return to the top level.

:27:37. > :27:46.No wonder she clenches her face. That rally summed up Madison Brengle

:27:47. > :27:56.here. Great scrapping. She is a game away from taking out the double

:27:57. > :28:00.champion. -- clenches her fist. Still, you would not totally rule

:28:01. > :28:14.Petra Kvitova added. Let's see what can be done here. It is her hand.

:28:15. > :28:30.Perhaps the most worrying thing of all, her hand is betraying her.

:28:31. > :28:36.There are also does seem to be another physical problem in that she

:28:37. > :28:43.is running out of energy. It is burning hot. All the emotional tally

:28:44. > :28:48.of the last two matches. Playing here at Wimbledon, her favourite

:28:49. > :28:58.tournament. They are taking her blood pressure as well because she

:28:59. > :29:03.is obviously not 100%. Worrying times. I think conditioning is an

:29:04. > :29:22.issue. I am not sure. We are trying to pick

:29:23. > :29:57.up what we can offer this. Sorry? Not really. It is my stomach that is

:29:58. > :30:12.the problem. Her stomach? This is tricky to pick up.

:30:13. > :30:43.Excuse the silence, but, like you, we're trying to pick something up.

:30:44. > :30:44.But it's obviously not just by hand, as we suspected, there is something

:30:45. > :31:01.else. -- not just the hand. She did turn it around so

:31:02. > :31:07.impressively in the second set. She was all over the place in the first

:31:08. > :31:11.set. 20 unforced errors. Was 1-0 down. Then the second set, then

:31:12. > :31:15.reeled off Mac six games in a row, at that point we thought things

:31:16. > :31:23.would get very tough for the American here, looking for her first

:31:24. > :31:34.win over at Wimbledon. But she has scrapped well. It is smart from

:31:35. > :31:39.Madison just to sit there. She is up now. She needs to start jogging up

:31:40. > :31:43.and down, doing some shadow swings, even hitting a couple of servers

:31:44. > :31:50.with some spare balls. A good idea from Madison. Not easy when you're

:31:51. > :31:55.serving to win a match, you're serving for the match on a big court

:31:56. > :32:00.against the two-time reigning champion, and you have to sit there.

:32:01. > :32:06.So, the doctor has left, the physio has loved, she's on her own now. I'm

:32:07. > :32:11.sure she wasn't feeling 100% -- the physio has left. This has to do with

:32:12. > :32:20.conditioning, she has played so few matches, to come in at this level is

:32:21. > :32:26.very hard. So, Brengle serving for the match. The double break cushion.

:32:27. > :33:02.At one stage she was broken for times in a row. Doing better now.

:33:03. > :33:09.This time, there's so many shots, particularly early on in the

:33:10. > :33:16.forehand, but then it got better. Now it's got worse.

:33:17. > :33:25.APPLAUSE I think this is just a mopping up

:33:26. > :33:45.process now. Sad to see. Three match points.

:33:46. > :33:53.Well, she's got to forget that. Very easy being wrong on the baseline,

:33:54. > :34:16.she was just too nervous to challenge it.

:34:17. > :34:27.APPLAUSE A fine win for Madison Brengle, one

:34:28. > :34:34.of the biggest in her career. A lot of extenuating circumstances, but

:34:35. > :34:39.the double champion is out here. And, for all the credit that she

:34:40. > :34:46.does deserve, Madison Brengle, it is a sad occasion for most of us. Let's

:34:47. > :34:50.hope that, to can come back stronger as the year progresses. -- that

:34:51. > :34:54.Petra Kvitova can come back stronger. She is through to the

:34:55. > :34:59.third round. She's a tricky customer. It was a clever match.

:35:00. > :35:03.I've seen her play many time, this is what you get from Brengle, she

:35:04. > :35:10.makes other players play badly, that her modus operandi, and she does it

:35:11. > :35:13.very well. It's a difficult task. And what's happened to Kvitova out

:35:14. > :35:20.here today is what has happened to many players on the tour, she has

:35:21. > :35:26.been Brengled, you have seen what that is in the first hour and 45

:35:27. > :35:30.minutes. The first hour promised much for Petra Kvitova, but in the

:35:31. > :35:35.end it is defeat in round number two. Madison Brengle goes through.

:35:36. > :35:39.STUDIO: Many people's favourite, including mine, going out. You felt

:35:40. > :35:43.after the second set you was going to seal victory. So sad to see her

:35:44. > :35:47.suffering so much. But she hasn't been doing a lot of training or

:35:48. > :35:52.playing a lot of matches, and it's a very warm day here today at

:35:53. > :36:01.Wimbledon. But credit to Brengle, she played a superb match and she is

:36:02. > :36:04.through. Petra Kvitova, the two-time champion, is out of Wimbledon. Just

:36:05. > :36:06.before we return to Centre Court, where going to tell you about a

:36:07. > :36:09.story, I'm sure you're going to read this in the headlines of the papers

:36:10. > :36:12.tomorrow. It involves a controversial match taking place out

:36:13. > :36:15.on court 16 involving Daniil Medvedev. He wanted to have the

:36:16. > :36:20.umpire changed because during the match he had a number of rules, and

:36:21. > :36:26.this was another one early in the fifth set. Let's listening. --

:36:27. > :36:32.listen in. I think you have something against me. You change his

:36:33. > :36:46.calls. Why? I want to change the referee. What do you mean? The break

:36:47. > :36:53.point, you just did it by yourself. Where the hell is the supervisor? He

:36:54. > :36:58.called for the supervisor. But the referee and the umpire was not

:36:59. > :37:03.changed. Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium went on to take the fifth set 6-3.

:37:04. > :37:08.Daniil Medvedev, who put out Stan Wawrinka in the first round, is out

:37:09. > :37:13.of the Championships but not out of the controversy. He did shake the

:37:14. > :37:17.umpire's hand. But just after that, as Bemelmans was celebrating, this

:37:18. > :37:21.is what he did. He got the wallet out and started throwing coins at

:37:22. > :37:25.the bottom of the umpire's chair as she got down from the chair. And

:37:26. > :37:31.this is what he had to say in the press conference after the match

:37:32. > :37:46.when asked about it. Well, this is what he said to the supervisor...

:37:47. > :37:52.That's what he said to the supervisor. And this is what he had

:37:53. > :37:58.to say to the press. In the heat of the moment I did a bad thing. And I

:37:59. > :38:02.apologise for this. And, yeah, I have nothing to say more. What's the

:38:03. > :38:08.significance of actually throwing recordings? What was it meant to

:38:09. > :38:16.mean? As I said, -- throwing the coins. It didn't mean anything. And

:38:17. > :38:21.I was just... I don't know why I did it. As I said, like, indeed of the

:38:22. > :38:26.moment I was frustrated to lose the match. Maybe there were some bad

:38:27. > :38:34.calls. It can happen in sport. And I was just disappointed. Did you mean

:38:35. > :38:39.that he was being biased? As I said, no, as I answered before, no, not at

:38:40. > :38:46.all. Will you apologise personally to her? If I see her. Apologising

:38:47. > :38:51.there, saying he will apologise to Marianne Alvarez, who was the

:38:52. > :38:58.umpire. No Hawk-Eye of course out on court 16, there are on the Big Show

:38:59. > :39:02.courts but not on the small courts. Somehow I don't think we have heard

:39:03. > :39:08.the end of that controversy -- there is war cry on the big courts. The

:39:09. > :39:14.number two seed Simona Halep is an number one court. Up against Beatriz

:39:15. > :39:18.Haddad Maia. He was a break down but now she is a break-up, serving for

:39:19. > :39:26.the first set. That is the feature match on the red button. Also on the

:39:27. > :39:29.BBC Sport website is Madison Keys, the American, up against Camila

:39:30. > :39:34.Giorgi of Italy, this will be an entertaining match. Everybody

:39:35. > :39:38.tipping Madison Keys to be a big star at Wimbledon, she has a big

:39:39. > :39:42.game to win on grass but she is 5-3 down. You can follow that one on the

:39:43. > :39:47.red button and on the BBC Sport website. But we are heading back to

:39:48. > :39:51.Centre Court, once again, to see Rafael Nadal, who is a break of

:39:52. > :39:55.serve up in the second set against Donald Young. Let's rejoin our

:39:56. > :40:26.commentators Boris Becker and Chris Bradley.

:40:27. > :40:35.Boris Becker mac wrote give it time, Young is on the backhand side. He

:40:36. > :41:25.uses the point, almost. These tough players, they have a

:41:26. > :41:26.couple of people in their team, they have a head coach, but everybody's

:41:27. > :42:31.important. CHRIS BRADNAM: Fourth round here is

:42:32. > :42:32.best, Moya. BORIS BECKER: Great point, whipping it crosscourt,

:42:33. > :42:56.another break point. Nadal might have missed that

:42:57. > :43:00.returned because of what Donald Young expletive! I would have missed

:43:01. > :43:30.it to! There goes the backhand again,

:43:31. > :43:36.getting a bit too flat. That's going to be the one weakness he has to

:43:37. > :43:42.work the most. The rest of his game looks good, looks solid, sometimes

:43:43. > :44:11.even dangerous. But the backhand is questionable.

:44:12. > :44:23.Nadal's average backhand, top-spin speed, is considerably quicker than

:44:24. > :44:27.normal junk's -- van Donald Young's there's a a lot of chattering going

:44:28. > :44:47.on in the box at the moment. It's a big point.

:44:48. > :45:01.Very offensive return by Nadal, wow, that one. He is up a set and a

:45:02. > :45:02.break, the right play, you know, you want to practice the late exchanges

:45:03. > :45:32.of the tournament. Or tell you what, I've never seen

:45:33. > :45:35.him like this in grass, offensive, coming forward. He's 14 from 17.

:45:36. > :45:45.Terrific. Battling hard here. It's just the one break in each set

:45:46. > :46:42.right at the start. Boris, if we talk motivation or

:46:43. > :46:48.ambition for a second, since making the final six years ago, losing to

:46:49. > :46:52.Novak, he lost the second round the following year on this court under

:46:53. > :46:59.the roof for the fifth and final set. Steve Darcis on Court Number

:47:00. > :47:02.One, first round, the -- huge shock. Dustin Brown a couple of years ago

:47:03. > :47:07.before missing last year with a wrist injury. Does that may debate

:47:08. > :47:12.him? Because of that record he really wants to put things right? At

:47:13. > :47:17.first it might scare him, because the track record isn't good at all.

:47:18. > :47:24.But he's a competitor. He is challenged by that. He has a

:47:25. > :47:28.relatively poor record, therefore, it is done his homework, I'm sure

:47:29. > :47:34.he's talked with Tony and Francis go about, what went wrong? What do I

:47:35. > :47:37.have to do to get better? This seems to be the answer, play more

:47:38. > :47:44.aggressive, take more chances, come to the net. And it's working

:47:45. > :47:48.beautifully. We've seen the extraordinary flying ants around

:47:49. > :47:54.Wimbledon today. At times, Henman Hill, whatever you want to call it,

:47:55. > :47:58.has resembled a human nest. Some have flown. Still plenty there,

:47:59. > :48:04.watching this great player ply his trade. It is actually one of the

:48:05. > :48:08.very good spots, my friend and my wife, you know, she actually prefers

:48:09. > :48:13.Henman Hill sometimes because she can have the Pimms in her hand and

:48:14. > :48:34.enjoy it any more relaxed environment. It is a popular spot.

:48:35. > :48:42.APPLAUSE Interesting, on the clay and I'll

:48:43. > :48:48.hit the ball had much higher over the net to get the bounce. -- Nadal

:48:49. > :48:51.hits the ball. Here he goes over very tightly, celebrating speed

:48:52. > :49:17.through that. Totally different style.

:49:18. > :49:51.The man who really goes for the line with the forehand. It's

:49:52. > :50:22.intimidating. UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:50:23. > :50:27.There are Times on Nadal's forehand, the ball is almost wobbling, it is

:50:28. > :50:33.like a fish in water as it moves down the line. It creates so much

:50:34. > :50:37.top-spin. With a little more lid on his racket, and little heavier, he

:50:38. > :50:42.gets more speed out of it. It's very difficult to control. New balls.

:50:43. > :50:47.Young serving to stay in set number two.

:50:48. > :50:55.Oh, if that had hit Donald Young on the full, Nadal would have won the

:50:56. > :51:05.point. One of those idiosyncratic rules in tennis.

:51:06. > :51:22.It's a brutal return, when he chose sparingly to serve and volley.

:51:23. > :51:28.Donald Young is serving onto the body. It is a serve not used often

:51:29. > :51:50.enough. Especially on grass. The smiles have gone. I've seen

:51:51. > :52:37.happier faces. After one hour and 11 minutes, his

:52:38. > :52:42.first match on Court Number One, he was fourth on Court One on Monday,

:52:43. > :52:46.one hour and 46 minutes. Boris, getting through the earlier rounds

:52:47. > :52:51.in Grand Slams as easily as possible is still very important. That's key

:52:52. > :52:54.if you want to have a chance to win the Championship, you have to spend

:52:55. > :52:58.as little energy and time in the earlier rounds, especially in the

:52:59. > :53:02.first week, as you are intent on the draw with your form. There are

:53:03. > :53:06.unlikely that you go all the way, to spend all of your energy in the

:53:07. > :53:11.first week entry. So I think the top guys know that, the favourites know

:53:12. > :53:16.that. They try to play very efficient, of cause. They're looking

:53:17. > :53:21.to find their form. Once they find their form, they feel good about it.

:53:22. > :53:26.You see Andy Murray forming the back performing excellent against Dustin

:53:27. > :53:33.Brown. The top guys gearing up a notch. Just looking to get through

:53:34. > :53:37.as easy as possible. You got a lot of courts in what you call your

:53:38. > :53:42.home, haven't you? I don't know which one to pick sometimes! I think

:53:43. > :53:55.you like the big one, don't you? I agree.

:53:56. > :54:06.A couple more towels requested for Nadal. Really did save time, so he

:54:07. > :54:23.doesn't have to go in the corner. They can bring the towels for him.

:54:24. > :54:31.He'd be good at any sport, wouldn't he, no Bell? I know he's good at

:54:32. > :54:39.football. I think he plays. -- Nadal. And golf, he plays golf. The

:54:40. > :54:40.island where he lives in Majorca, there are beautiful golf courses.

:54:41. > :54:56.You can catch him there often. Oh, he stopped straightaway, so he

:54:57. > :55:01.was committed to the challenge, really, Young. The ball is called

:55:02. > :55:06.in. He doesn't look to convince, though. -- doesn't look too

:55:07. > :55:17.convinced. UMPIRE: Mr Young has one challenge

:55:18. > :55:42.remaining. The young man approved of this one.

:55:43. > :56:47.He wouldn't?! -- who will wouldn't. He keeps his authority on the

:56:48. > :57:05.server. Two set points. -- on the serve.

:57:06. > :57:21.Young comes up with some exceptional points at times. Just doesn't have

:57:22. > :58:02.the consistency. APPLAUSE

:58:03. > :58:03.Well, he gambled that in one. Like the goalkeeper choosing the right

:58:04. > :59:44.corner. APPLAUSE

:59:45. > :59:46.Serve and volley on by a point down. No, it's not Roger Federer, it's

:59:47. > :59:57.Rafael Nadal. He's got a split on his finger, I

:59:58. > :00:02.think. That's why he wears all this tape on the ends of his fingers. He

:00:03. > :00:14.just wants the call but into the trainer, I think, for a repair.

:00:15. > :00:23.He is three from three on the serve and folly. But on break point? --

:00:24. > :01:10.serve and volley. Not by knowledge. Rave lady. -- Not

:01:11. > :01:20.by much. Brave lady. Coming from two sets down to win.

:01:21. > :01:24.STUDIO: Rafa in charge and no doubt looking for the trainer. You want

:01:25. > :01:30.some tape for those sore fingers. I'm sure we will have a little delay

:01:31. > :01:35.here and centre. We will be back. What a wonderful day it has been

:01:36. > :01:38.here at Wimbledon. Let's find out what will feature on our Highland

:01:39. > :01:43.show. Sunshine and tennis, what better way

:01:49. > :01:51.those matches. We will see Joanna Konta, Andy Murray against Dustin

:01:52. > :01:55.Brown, we will also see Rafa Nadal, and we'll show you how Heather

:01:56. > :02:04.Watson got on. We will also have quote of the day and shot of the

:02:05. > :02:08.day. Join us on BBC Two. STUDIO: There's plenty of tennis

:02:09. > :02:13.continuing around the grounds. In the ladies' championship out on

:02:14. > :02:20.Court Number One, Simona Halep was in trouble in the opening set. She

:02:21. > :02:24.was a break down but has taken the first set 7-5. A real battle there

:02:25. > :02:39.for the French Open runner-up. That matches on the red button. Over on

:02:40. > :02:43.Court number three, well, the 17th seed being coached by Lindsay

:02:44. > :02:50.Davenport. A big forehand, but she is trailing a set and a break to be

:02:51. > :02:58.-- to the very talented Camila Giorgi. Out on court 12 is the

:02:59. > :03:04.French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko. The match she played

:03:05. > :03:11.against Simona Halep was incredible. Uninhibited tennis. She is out on

:03:12. > :03:16.Court number 12 and in real trouble against Abanda of Canada. She's

:03:17. > :03:20.dropped the first set but has taken the second. She is struggling in her

:03:21. > :03:26.opening. Here she is with a point to go 3-1 up in the second. But a huge

:03:27. > :03:33.future for this 20-year-old. That matches on the red button and the

:03:34. > :03:39.BBC Sport website, if you want to see Jelena. The order of play for

:03:40. > :03:44.tomorrow, first on Centre Court is Britain's Kyle Edmund who is taking

:03:45. > :03:49.on Gael Monfils, always described as the great showman. Never really a

:03:50. > :03:53.contender for the title, but he is ranked 14th. Then it is Karolina

:03:54. > :03:58.Pliskova and Roger Federer, the Centre Court line-up tomorrow. But

:03:59. > :04:08.what's coming up tomorrow, but back we go. I think Rafa has had some

:04:09. > :04:14.tape and is ready to go. COMMENTATOR: Repairs for Nadal Colly

:04:15. > :04:20.down. -- repairs for Nadal carried out. A long way back from here. Two

:04:21. > :04:23.steps down. He's lost his own service game of each of the two

:04:24. > :04:29.preceding sets. He's got to stop this one well. -- start this one

:04:30. > :04:50.well. They've even got a sponsor for the

:04:51. > :05:09.tape Ewers on his fingers, Nadal. -- he wears on his fingers. He's got

:05:10. > :05:44.ten fingers. Another good exciting rally by Young. A good shot maker.

:05:45. > :05:57.Many have tried and failed to trade forehands with Nadal.

:05:58. > :06:03.There are many cheering for Donald Young now. I think many would like

:06:04. > :06:05.to see Nadal win, but they just want to see more of him. They wouldn't

:06:06. > :06:23.mind another set after this. Looking for the break straightaway,

:06:24. > :06:30.again, Nadal. Nearly six minutes past eight. We have seen a lot more

:06:31. > :06:33.tennis in his three matches than yesterday. Thankfully, they put

:06:34. > :06:42.another ladies' match Ryan last night. -- match on last night. To

:06:43. > :07:13.get some value for the ticket! Today, it's not necessary. Unlucky.

:07:14. > :07:27.Good by the American. The first time he's helped the opening service game

:07:28. > :07:31.of a set. -- he's held. Would you add anything else for Donald Young?

:07:32. > :07:37.Holding serve, get the scoreboard ticking. But anything else? He's got

:07:38. > :07:41.to increase intensity. He has flashes of brilliance, but he's

:07:42. > :07:51.really got to put it on the line. Nothing to lose now. Two sets to

:07:52. > :08:29.love down. He has incredible ability at times. But lacking consistency.

:08:30. > :08:51.That's what I'm talking about. Just let it all out. It's too late. The

:08:52. > :09:08.-- it's too late for strategy. Or no comfort break, I think.

:09:09. > :09:34.Unless she decided to leave. Hope not, her son's playing.

:09:35. > :09:54.Good again, if taken the ball early. Just try something different. I like

:09:55. > :10:20.his attitude. Only offered the one break point so far, Nadal.

:10:21. > :11:10.It's must be the third time he's had Nadal at 30-30. Hmm, you could stay

:11:11. > :11:46.up, son. Could. Strong clear by Nadal. Beautiful

:11:47. > :12:14.through that volley. Not stopping in no man's land. Some players do that.

:12:15. > :12:30.Well, he had a chance flag, Young. He pushed Nadal. One game isn't good

:12:31. > :12:44.enough, you have two build momentum. You have to create your own chances.

:12:45. > :12:52.Interesting enough is Nadal would feel that. He feels that Dion is not

:12:53. > :13:00.giving up, but he's got into fifth or sixth gear now. -- he feels that

:13:01. > :13:13.Young is not giving up. Body serve again. She serves really well,

:13:14. > :13:20.doesn't it, Young? Really good. -- He serves.

:13:21. > :14:05.Which national team is that, jersey-wise? Spain? The scoreboard

:14:06. > :14:19.is ticking for Donald Young. Up, instead of down. How good do you

:14:20. > :14:24.think Donald Young could be? He's been as high as 38th in the world,

:14:25. > :14:30.Donald Young. I think he could be a consistent top 30 player. But,

:14:31. > :14:37.obviously, he's got to improve his back and a little bit. He's not the

:14:38. > :14:47.strongest players physically. Very quick. Sometimes a little bit of

:14:48. > :14:53.firepower is lacking. He's good in doubles now. He's played a lot more

:14:54. > :14:55.done. -- played a lot more double. It's good to see that, isn't it?

:14:56. > :15:18.Just adding to the scores. The way Donald Young has stopped

:15:19. > :15:22.looking up and around, he's just totally focused on the court, the

:15:23. > :15:26.playing surface, the job around. It was wonderful to see behind the back

:15:27. > :15:31.netting before coming out onto the court. His hat with a bit off, he

:15:32. > :15:34.often wears it to be fired. Just like letting the side. Just like

:15:35. > :15:41.letting beast e-mail - he was looking up and around, taking in

:15:42. > :15:47.this historic court. -- just like letting the steam out. It's been a

:15:48. > :15:52.bit too much for some. Come on, it's not that boring! May be heeded

:15:53. > :16:03.another marathon before he sat down. -- may be heeded another marathon.

:16:04. > :16:16.Young is strong faced at the moment. Nadal has to be careful.

:16:17. > :16:20.The thing about tennis, there are so many momentum changes, back and

:16:21. > :16:41.forth. There's always a chance. Serve onto the body. Got away too

:16:42. > :17:47.late. In his own little zone now. It's

:17:48. > :17:49.good to see that fighting spirit. He went doubled the amount. You could

:17:50. > :18:01.hear how hard he was trying, too. It's still very warm. The hottest

:18:02. > :18:44.day of the tournament so far. After that shot, looking to come in.

:18:45. > :19:04.It's beautiful to see. Well, it hit a line, but is it long?

:19:05. > :19:24.No challenge. Oh! That's what you call taking on a

:19:25. > :19:34.return. The best part of the match so far. Real competitive. And with

:19:35. > :19:45.another blistering return. Couldn't take it much earlier than that.

:19:46. > :21:00.Checking his watch, what time of the day it is.

:21:01. > :21:30.Showtime! Look at this. Half-volley drop shot.

:21:31. > :21:47.Is it just me, or is that the point? They agree with you.

:21:48. > :22:46.As we understand that, Boris, should this match go beyond the point where

:22:47. > :22:51.it's light enough, they will close the roof to complete this evening.

:22:52. > :22:55.So we are just hanging in here with Donald Young, he's doing really

:22:56. > :23:01.well, notching the scoreboard. You never know, it's going to be the

:23:02. > :23:03.most magnificent sunsets. It's important information because

:23:04. > :23:09.everybody's worrying what they're going to do in 20, 25 minutes. It's

:23:10. > :23:13.one of the reasons they built the roof, to finish under all

:23:14. > :23:26.circumstances, all matches, on Centre Court. Bob Willis has bowled

:23:27. > :23:36.a few over in his time. Of course, when the roof closes, don't remind

:23:37. > :23:45.Nadal about 2012. What a set of tennis that was from the Czech. He

:23:46. > :23:54.became unplayable, it was extraordinary. As Kyrgios was fourth

:23:55. > :23:55.round a couple of years later. Dustin Brown, the year after that.

:23:56. > :24:39.In the second round. He's totally absorbed now, isn't it?

:24:40. > :25:18.What a forehand from Nadal. Close. He's challenging. I think the

:25:19. > :25:31.ball's borne out. It may be a little late for my taste. And it was out.

:25:32. > :25:44.Sometimes players check with their box whether to challenge or not.

:25:45. > :25:57.Immediate overruled. No complaints, no challenge from Donald Young.

:25:58. > :26:16.Good job, Mr umpire. We often criticise them. Today he's doing a

:26:17. > :26:20.good job. This is definitely the Spanish national team of football

:26:21. > :26:37.for the ladies. They'll have a mixed teams soon.

:26:38. > :26:47.They should be proud of their man. Ten French Opens. It's difficult to

:26:48. > :27:03.comprehend, isn't it? Look at the faces of the people

:27:04. > :27:45.behind. You can see what all the hype was

:27:46. > :28:17.about. A good tennis match now. Mama should be proud.

:28:18. > :28:21.This is a real punching contest now. It's one of the other. Nobody's

:28:22. > :29:01.holding back. Oh, far! Told "far enough", son.

:29:02. > :29:10.That was just over trying. Nothing wrong with over trying. Or

:29:11. > :29:23.overheating. -- overhitting. Two more break points.

:29:24. > :29:40.Nadal breaks. UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:29:41. > :29:44.It's quiet in the crowd. Obviously what was achieved at the start of

:29:45. > :29:52.the year for Nadal and Mr Federer, and since, a real contender, Nadal?

:29:53. > :29:58.We all wanted to see how he's playing on grass. He hasn't shown up

:29:59. > :30:02.in a while. Obviously he hasn't played in a grass court tournaments

:30:03. > :30:08.before, so we couldn't really tell. But what I've seen so far, he looks

:30:09. > :30:13.strong. He looks confident, he looks healthy, he looks hungry. And if he

:30:14. > :30:20.gets another two or three matches like this, nobody wants to play this

:30:21. > :30:27.guy, I'm telling you. The ultimate competitor, and he's going to give

:30:28. > :30:33.it all he's got. Of course everybody's favourite is Roger

:30:34. > :30:42.Federer. But then you have Andy Murray. You have Novak Djokovic. I

:30:43. > :30:47.think the big four back. I think all of them have a very, very realistic

:30:48. > :30:53.chance. It depends how they get through the first week, then the

:30:54. > :30:57.round of 16, then the quarterfinal. But the biggest question I had a

:30:58. > :30:58.Nadal, because we haven't seen him. I think he's answering all the

:30:59. > :31:04.questions. New balls in play. 4-3, Nadal, with

:31:05. > :31:17.the break. So good to see that Nadal is under

:31:18. > :31:54.pressure and fight another day. LAUGHTER

:31:55. > :32:24.Same woman! Not blinking. He beat John Millman 6-1, 6-2, 6-3,

:32:25. > :32:39.first round, Nadal. He has got a competitive set here.

:32:40. > :33:01.UMPIRE: Game, the Dalston the other 64% of first serves -- game, Nadal.

:33:02. > :33:12.Strong performance. There's a lot of contentment in the

:33:13. > :33:19.box for the bowl right now. Look at that score, you can understand why.

:33:20. > :33:29.-- for Nadal. He has brought back some better memories. He must feel

:33:30. > :33:34.like he's in a time machine, no bowl last year, two years ago, he thought

:33:35. > :33:39.that was maybe it -- that last year. But here we are, a brand-new version

:33:40. > :33:40.of him coming back. What a rest will be for you. There's a lesson to be

:33:41. > :33:46.learned therefore quite a few. Spectacular forehand at times. Runs

:33:47. > :35:18.around it, and bang in the corner. Has there ever been a better

:35:19. > :35:24.forehand down the line? There are some good ones over the years. Ivan

:35:25. > :35:32.Ramis wasn't bad. Pete Sampras wasn't bad. There's a guy in Sweden

:35:33. > :36:02.called Bjorn Borg, he wasn't bad either.

:36:03. > :36:21.This is one of the toughest things to do in tennis, even though the

:36:22. > :36:27.grass court season is longer. Really nice companies are. Three of the

:36:28. > :36:32.all-time greatest -- nice company there.

:36:33. > :36:41.I really like his attitude today. Around the court, still trying to

:36:42. > :36:59.ask Nadal the ultimate question of serving for the match.

:37:00. > :37:26.A lot of football fans here tonight! It's an Argentinian shirt.

:37:27. > :37:47.There will be a lot of aching faces this evening. Dustin Brown's shots,

:37:48. > :37:53.what we've seen here, they've been smiling for hours, the crowd.

:37:54. > :38:01.And there's another one! Donald Young does get to ask the question

:38:02. > :38:27.of Rafael Nadal. Well done! This half-volley down the line. Does

:38:28. > :38:33.it break your heart a little, how little serve and fully in play like

:38:34. > :38:36.this is shown on the grass now? Well, it's unfortunate, because it's

:38:37. > :38:39.an important part of the game. You can see the greats, they all adapt

:38:40. > :38:48.their game a little bit, and it's just not enough. From the baseline,

:38:49. > :38:51.everybody does that now. You served by playing a bit more aggressive,

:38:52. > :38:57.you don't have to serve and volley every time. But it's just what we

:38:58. > :39:01.see tonight from Nadal, just adding a new element to his game, therefore

:39:02. > :39:06.he's playing better now than he played years ago. The same thing

:39:07. > :39:14.with Federer. And the way Donald Young was looking ahead than, this

:39:15. > :39:18.match against Nadal on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, will he train

:39:19. > :39:21.his mind to even greater heights? I hope so. I thought about that

:39:22. > :39:31.before. If that's the way he wants to play, that the intensity, he has

:39:32. > :39:35.the quality, but can he do it at court number 17 against nobody?

:39:36. > :39:38.That's always the question. It's easy to play your best on Centre

:39:39. > :39:47.Court against that. Can he do it next week? Two minutes shy of two

:39:48. > :40:03.hours, Nadal serving. For a place in round three.

:40:04. > :40:20.He wants more. So did they. It's time to stand up! What a lightning

:40:21. > :40:36.forehand, perfect shot down the line. Beauty.

:40:37. > :40:40.UMPIRE: Mr Nadal is challenging the call on the far side line. The ball

:40:41. > :41:01.is called out. Of the Tiger. -- are of the Tiger.

:41:02. > :41:39.Different, first and second serve, 0-15, is huge.

:41:40. > :41:53.If Nadal was a sponge, you'd buy one.

:41:54. > :42:26.CHEERING One of the few unforced errors by

:42:27. > :42:31.Nadal, and it's always the same when you serve for the match. It's a

:42:32. > :42:54.different type of pressure. It doesn't matter who you are.

:42:55. > :42:59.Donald Young cannot try any harder! He was out of the picture, I didn't

:43:00. > :43:49.see him any more. Wow! That if a monster! People are

:43:50. > :43:52.standing. So, it it's Donald Young, he is still standing. He's got a

:43:53. > :44:44.lifeline. How can you cope with the pressure?

:44:45. > :45:23.That's the difference. The one big chance he had, the second serve.

:45:24. > :45:48.Just his second double. Of the tournament.

:45:49. > :46:00.UMPIRE: Game, Donald Young. Many more standing now!

:46:01. > :46:45.And well-deserved. The right intensity, good chances.

:46:46. > :46:55.Now you've got to cool down again. The concentration. Can he manage the

:46:56. > :48:06.emotion? UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, as a

:48:07. > :48:10.courtesy to both players, please, no calling out during the rally. Thank

:48:11. > :48:11.you very much. It's tough when you're so excited and you're playing

:48:12. > :48:43.every shot with them. It almost seems that Donald Young is

:48:44. > :48:48.surprised he's still in the match. He almost seems overwhelmed by

:48:49. > :48:57.breaking Nadal. Because he's lost his intensity.

:48:58. > :49:10.APPLAUSE And he's got a break again. To stay

:49:11. > :49:17.in the match began. That asks if he's OK after the slip. -- Nadal

:49:18. > :49:22.asks. It says everything you need to know about Nadal. The light is

:49:23. > :49:27.fading. But we know that Nadal on this court can play until it is

:49:28. > :49:32.virtually pitched up. Extraordinary final against Federer -- virtually

:49:33. > :49:36.pitched dark. Thought about going in but then he thought better of it,

:49:37. > :49:48.young, but he got stuck in the no man's land. You change your mind.

:49:49. > :49:53.Tony and Francisco, that's another reason why, you know, the top guys,

:49:54. > :49:59.Nadal and some of the others we mentioned, just rise above, because

:50:00. > :50:04.they can take a punch or two. There are strong characters, strong

:50:05. > :50:13.personalities. They don't wilt under a storm. And that looks, with the

:50:14. > :50:16.fading light, if the roof did have to be closed, they would have to

:50:17. > :50:20.take the players of court, get that done, bring them back. For Nadal, it

:50:21. > :50:28.lets do this now. For the second time, Nadal serving

:50:29. > :50:40.for the match. Let's see if Younge can rise to the

:50:41. > :50:57.occasion again. -- if Young. APPLAUSE

:50:58. > :51:35.He cut it fine. It skimmed the net. Nadal is solid now. He's been warned

:51:36. > :52:23.before. That'll do it! Two matches, six

:52:24. > :52:30.sets, round three for Afri on adult. -- for Rafael Navarro.

:52:31. > :52:36.STUDIO: Great stuff from Rafa Nadal, and of course from Donald Young.

:52:37. > :52:39.Rafa going to keep the lighting that crowd and is under God. What a day

:52:40. > :52:44.they've had. We will be reflecting on some of the early action --

:52:45. > :52:51.delighting that crowd on Centre Court. We will be hearing from Raqqa

:52:52. > :52:56.very shortly. Pat Cash is sitting alongside me -- we will be here from

:52:57. > :53:00.Rafa. It got more tenth of the match went on. Rafa was playing very well

:53:01. > :53:04.the first couple of sets. Occasionally he just loses the

:53:05. > :53:10.timing. And he loses aggression. You've got to give credit to Young,

:53:11. > :53:14.he broke back coming he played well, he's a very talented player and he's

:53:15. > :53:19.got at all. The fans don't want to be listening to us while this is

:53:20. > :53:22.going on! Rafa is ripping off his shirt! In any events... I got

:53:23. > :53:30.distracted myself! A little late night entertainment for you. Are you

:53:31. > :53:33.still look like that! Back in the day. He's working his way in the

:53:34. > :53:37.tournament. He would be very satisfied with the way that he

:53:38. > :53:41.served. He's a double full at the wrong time, but basically he served

:53:42. > :53:49.well, he's got his rhythm. He mistimed a few balls, but Young is

:53:50. > :53:53.playing well. Rafa will be happy. Just a couple of matches still going

:53:54. > :53:59.on on quotes three and 12. Camilla Georgia Lees 2-0 up in the third set

:54:00. > :54:01.against Madison Keys. Also into a decider, Elaine Ostapenko, the

:54:02. > :54:09.French Open champion, the newest of the Grand Slam champions is 3-2 up

:54:10. > :54:13.against France was of Canada. But we are going to start today at

:54:14. > :54:19.Wimbledon with looking back on the early action at Centre Court.

:54:20. > :54:29.First out onto court was the British number one, Johanna Konta.

:54:30. > :54:34.She was playing Donna Vekic, who had beaten her in three

:54:35. > :54:37.sets in the final of the Nottingham Open.

:54:38. > :54:43.The crowd had queued overnight. We will join the match in the opening

:54:44. > :54:48.And we join it in the seventh game of the first set.

:54:49. > :54:59.Sam Smith and Kim Clijsters were watching.

:55:00. > :55:05.I always said that I have the strength in my legs from my dad and

:55:06. > :55:06.my frack stability from my mother, he was a footballer and she was a

:55:07. > :55:57.gymnast. -- might flexibility. Konta, smart move, you might have

:55:58. > :56:02.seen her creep into the shade in the back of the court. It is a hot one

:56:03. > :56:04.out there. We might have a top of 27 degrees today. And they are really

:56:05. > :56:21.going for it out here. With the circumstances, like in

:56:22. > :56:29.Australia. We can do heat here, you know, Kim!

:56:30. > :57:14.It's unusual. I like how she steps in after a big

:57:15. > :57:18.serves like that. Because she stays on the court after she lands, and

:57:19. > :57:22.it's almost like she knows that there's a ball coming. -- a short

:57:23. > :57:44.ball coming. No, she's not going to challenge.

:57:45. > :57:51.Just right. Margins are very tight in this opening set. Still on serve,

:57:52. > :57:56.Vekic leading 4-3. STUDIO: Some great tennis.

:57:57. > :57:59.Vekic held for 4-3, and then broke the Konta serve to lead 5-3.

:58:00. > :58:02.Vekic served for the set, but that was the moment

:58:03. > :58:04.that Konta broke back, and eventually the set

:58:05. > :58:26.We picked it up at 4-4 in the tie-break, with Vekic serving.

:58:27. > :58:44.I fear it's the first 27 points, with two points clear. And Johanna

:58:45. > :59:10.with a couple of serves to go now. Using that serve out wide. Just

:59:11. > :59:14.going to have to make it harder than it is. Two set points for the

:59:15. > :59:36.British number one. What a comeback from Konta! It's

:59:37. > :59:43.Great Britain one, Croatia zero, as Konta take the opening set by 7-6.

:59:44. > :59:55.It's fabulous, tight tennis as well. Vekic gives as good as she gets.

:59:56. > :59:58.First game of the second set, Vekic broke, and the momentum seemed

:59:59. > :00:01.Searing heat on Centre Court, and an invasion of flying

:00:02. > :00:05.In the fourth game, Konta broke back.

:00:06. > :00:09.But Vekic broke Konta's serve again, and we join it with her

:00:10. > :00:13.serving for the second set to level things up.

:00:14. > :00:26.And we rejoin us Vekic is serving for the second set.

:00:27. > :00:40.What poison. That the combination that you try to practice. -- what

:00:41. > :00:51.poise. Open up into the". It was a perfect example. It's on, and what a

:00:52. > :01:00.fightback from Croatia's Donna Vekic. She levels.

:01:01. > :01:02.Both served much more solidly in the third set,

:01:03. > :01:05.and 12 service holds later they were at six games

:01:06. > :01:07.all in the final set, where of course there

:01:08. > :01:28.There was, however, some truly great tennis.

:01:29. > :01:42.COMMENTATOR: What a point. Konta and 0-30 now. Really great tennis we are

:01:43. > :02:10.seeing about. The ball just skimming the net.

:02:11. > :02:23.Great pick-up. Vekic got to it and kept it really low, so made it hard

:02:24. > :02:43.for Donna with that shot. -- Konta got it.

:02:44. > :03:15.She's likely to use that serve out wide on that side of the court.

:03:16. > :03:20.A fabulous combination from Donna Vekic. The very first break point of

:03:21. > :04:12.this deciding set. And we pick up the match

:04:13. > :04:20.towards the end of the 18th game. It's 30-30, with Vekic serving

:04:21. > :04:39.to stay in the match. COMMENTATOR: There we go. She knew

:04:40. > :04:58.that second serve was coming to the forehand. It has been a battle

:04:59. > :05:11.royale match point for Konta. It's that easy! A titanic battle a couple

:05:12. > :05:13.of weeks ago on the grass of Nottingham with the final set. This

:05:14. > :06:37.is surpassing even that contest. I think when a match gets to such a

:06:38. > :06:40.stage where there is so little separating you, for me, personally,

:06:41. > :06:45.I can just as easily feel the position. I can feel what it's like

:06:46. > :06:50.to be in her shoes. You feel her pain as well, and it could just of

:06:51. > :06:55.easily as been made on that side of the equation. So I feel very proud

:06:56. > :06:58.of myself and very fortunate to have battled through. You had a number of

:06:59. > :07:04.things to contend with. Obviously, a very good opponent. The sheet. And

:07:05. > :07:08.then suddenly flying ants. There was quite an army of flying ants. I

:07:09. > :07:14.think I've definitely taken home a few as a souvenir in my belly and my

:07:15. > :07:20.bags. I definitely ate a few! You're so careful with your nutrition! I

:07:21. > :07:23.know. I try to get the real lean protein. I'm not sure whether flying

:07:24. > :07:26.ants were a good thing or a bad thing, but she certainly tried to

:07:27. > :07:41.take it in her stride. Was always going to be a battle. It

:07:42. > :07:47.really could have gone either way. Really hot conditions, and the girls

:07:48. > :07:51.were chasing everything down. It was a huge match for both of them. Vekic

:07:52. > :07:56.has got a great future. She was touted as one of the best up and

:07:57. > :08:01.coming players. It took her a little while. She's still very Young. You

:08:02. > :08:06.can see the standard of tennis here. Some of it was under extreme

:08:07. > :08:17.pressure on match point, Vekic serves a monstrous ace. She's got a

:08:18. > :08:20.big serve. Konta, there is good serve there, her ground strokes,

:08:21. > :08:24.she's a good all-round player. Should she be getting more

:08:25. > :08:28.aggressive? Winning makes you positive. We are seeing the

:08:29. > :08:34.highlights of her here. A very good crosscourt backhand. You can see she

:08:35. > :08:40.uses the court very well. That's not an easy shot to take out, looking up

:08:41. > :08:44.in the blue sky and the sun. It's a great performance for her, and she

:08:45. > :08:48.will only gain confidence from that. She talks a lot about staying light

:08:49. > :08:52.in the mind. She did that brilliantly, one step at a time.

:08:53. > :08:58.Let's get a quick update on those two matches still going on. Madison

:08:59. > :09:03.Keys is in big, big trouble. 5-1 down in the deciding set against

:09:04. > :09:08.Camila Giorgi. We could be losing another seed therefore Madison Keys.

:09:09. > :09:13.And what about Jelena Ostapenko, the French Open champion? She is playing

:09:14. > :09:23.on Court 12. Oster Pankow was closing in on victory, but the light

:09:24. > :09:27.is dimming fast. -- Ostapenko. She's actually at match point. A goal that

:09:28. > :09:36.certainly goes for her shots. That's about what the stats are, certainly.

:09:37. > :09:40.We can almost hear her grunting from up here. She blew through the French

:09:41. > :09:46.Open. We've never seen anybody come out like that hitting so many

:09:47. > :09:51.winners. Second serve, attacked on the grass. What that was her very

:09:52. > :09:58.first tour win, wasn't it? It's unbelievable. What an amazing story.

:09:59. > :10:06.That fit! There we go. Well done. Ostapenko into the third round. Live

:10:07. > :10:09.shots were from court 12. COMMENTATOR: Is not always easy to

:10:10. > :10:11.transition from such an amazing position under the grass court

:10:12. > :10:15.Wimbledon with everybody watching you.

:10:16. > :10:21.Meanwhile, we've just had match point number three court, where

:10:22. > :10:24.Madison Keys, who is the 17 seed, has been in big trouble against

:10:25. > :10:32.Camila Giorgi. And the Italian has one. So, Madison Keys is out. This

:10:33. > :10:36.just all adds to the feeling that anything can happen at the moment in

:10:37. > :10:40.women's tennis, and particularly on grass where it can be even more

:10:41. > :10:45.unpredictable. Camila Giorgi has been around for a while. Madison,

:10:46. > :10:48.you would think she would be a little bit disappointed. The Giorgi

:10:49. > :10:52.has played almost every tournament is grass court season and is getting

:10:53. > :10:57.the hang of it. She's only small, but she hits the ball really flat.

:10:58. > :11:01.She gets a serve going, it's tough to pick up. Some people feel much

:11:02. > :11:06.more comfortable here at Wimbledon than they do anywhere else. Possibly

:11:07. > :11:13.one of those is Heather Watson. Two years ago, she very nearly took out

:11:14. > :11:14.Venus Williams. Today, she was up on court wasn't hanging about on first

:11:15. > :11:35.set. COMMENTATOR: There it is, our first

:11:36. > :11:37.break point of the match and six minutes on the clock. What a start

:11:38. > :12:13.for Watson, the British number two. Sevastova is a little bit stunned at

:12:14. > :12:33.the moment. That's it. 80 minutes played, and we

:12:34. > :12:47.have our first set point. -- 18 minutes played. Never a better first

:12:48. > :12:52.set of tennis. Just 19 minutes on the clock.

:12:53. > :12:55.STUDIO: Perhaps not surprisingly, Watson went off at the start of the

:12:56. > :13:06.second set. But she is certainly back on form, as it were, as we

:13:07. > :13:19.rejoin her with Sevastova serving to stay in the match.

:13:20. > :13:40.COMMENTATOR: So, how much does Sevastova want this?

:13:41. > :14:03.We have three match points for Heather Watson to defeat the 18th

:14:04. > :14:04.seed, Anastasija
