:00:09. > :00:22.Welcome to Wimbledon here on BBC Two, we are with you throughout the
:00:23. > :00:36.afternoon and into the evening. Wins for Muguruza and Dimitrov, but we
:00:37. > :00:54.are going to head for live tennis. Gael
:00:55. > :01:08.Monfils is playing against Mannarino. Mannarino, a player who
:01:09. > :01:15.has the ability to beat the big players, he has done it before. He
:01:16. > :01:21.beat Lopez in the last round. Although Lopez retired on that
:01:22. > :01:28.occasion. A tough five-setter where he was fined ?7,000 for barging into
:01:29. > :01:43.a ballboy. Fined for unsportsman-like behaviour. There
:01:44. > :01:54.have been so many Frenchmen who have impressed. Jamie, what is it about
:01:55. > :01:59.the French? They always have such a big crop of players at the Grand
:02:00. > :02:03.Slams, it is always the discussion around the nation, would you rather
:02:04. > :02:08.have a few years where you have a champion and less players around the
:02:09. > :02:23.top hundred or I think they have 11 or 12 inside the top 100, that is
:02:24. > :02:31.just incredible. The winner of this plays the winner of Gulbis and
:02:32. > :02:41.Djokovic. A player who reached the third round in 1996. One thing about
:02:42. > :02:47.Monfils in that second round match, I thought he was extremely focussed.
:02:48. > :02:51.I don't know if this is something he has been talking with with his coach
:02:52. > :02:56.or whether it was a respect for the Centre Court atmosphere and the
:02:57. > :03:01.stage he was playing on. So, on so many occasions when you watch
:03:02. > :03:07.Monfils, you're not sure what you will get. He can play any shot at
:03:08. > :03:18.any time. That is what makes him so exciting to watch. John Long from
:03:19. > :03:23.Australia is in charge of this one. Court 12 is always one of the
:03:24. > :03:29.popular outside courts. Plenty of seeds have come and gone here. Just
:03:30. > :03:38.takes just over a thousand spectators. Many of these have been
:03:39. > :03:42.queueing through the night as always and the weather again slightly
:03:43. > :03:46.cloudy, but plenty of sunshine as there has been all week. We have
:03:47. > :04:01.missed about half an hour of play on that opening day so far.
:04:02. > :04:11.Gael Monfils bidding to reach the fourth round for the first time hear
:04:12. > :04:13.at Wimbledon. Got to this stage five times before. Never gone that extra
:04:14. > :05:52.mile. Nice to serve at a decent pace, Gael
:05:53. > :05:56.Monfils. That is a wonderful finish from Mannarino, using that wonderful
:05:57. > :06:15.forehand of his to guide it down the line.
:06:16. > :06:25.Not that time. Aside from that forehand winner, they have both been
:06:26. > :06:48.very tentative in this opening game. Wow this net... Getting in on the
:06:49. > :06:57.act in the opening service game. Monfils holds.
:06:58. > :07:08.That was a cagey start from both players, you will see as the match
:07:09. > :07:15.goes on, how comfortable Mannarino is on the grass. A very short swing.
:07:16. > :07:24.And you will see his flat trajectory is very effective on this surface.
:07:25. > :07:32.Mannarino at 51 in the world. Lives in Malta. This is his seventh
:07:33. > :07:48.Wimbledon. Last year knocked out by Novak Djokovic in the second round.
:07:49. > :08:07.UMPIRE: Mr Mannarino challenging the call. The ball was called in.
:08:08. > :08:52.Mr Mannarino has two challenges remaining.
:08:53. > :09:02.Had just enough pace, Monfils was taking all the pace off every shot.
:09:03. > :09:05.The longest rally with 21 shots. But everything comes back with slice,
:09:06. > :09:23.asking Mannarino to inject the pace. I wonder if that is going to be a
:09:24. > :09:27.tactic for Monfils in the match. I'm almost laughing watching him play
:09:28. > :09:30.that point, you think he has got so much time and he has this ability to
:09:31. > :09:48.put some serious pace on the ball. Lovely touch from Mannarino. Monfils
:09:49. > :10:05.well behind the baseline, taken out by that delicious slice.
:10:06. > :10:17.Not bad, 121mph from Adrian Mannarin.
:10:18. > :10:33.He is hoping to reach the last 16 for the second time.
:10:34. > :10:45.It has been a cagey start from Monfils.
:10:46. > :11:36.A couple of missed returns as well in the opening two service games
:11:37. > :11:38.from Mannarino. That backhand return, you wouldn't expect him to
:11:39. > :12:18.miss too many of those. He looks out of sorts. There is not
:12:19. > :12:20.much the umpire can do about it. I think complaining that the ballboy
:12:21. > :12:57.took forever to find the ball. Five times the ball has clipped the
:12:58. > :13:24.net and we are only into the third game of the match!
:13:25. > :13:38.He hasn't had to do a lot to earn this break point, Mannarino.
:13:39. > :14:20.First serve to the rescue for Monfils.
:14:21. > :14:31.Scrappy game, but a fine finish from Gael Monfils.
:14:32. > :14:55.He is still talking about the ballboy who couldn't find the ball.
:14:56. > :15:00.He is still stuck in first gear isn't he? Even just the chats he is
:15:01. > :15:06.having with the umpire shows you from what was a very focussed
:15:07. > :15:11.performance against Kyle Edmunds in the fist rounds, you can deal from
:15:12. > :15:16.his demeanour, this is the type of a match that is much more of a
:15:17. > :15:22.challenge. His career is littered with these types of performances. He
:15:23. > :15:27.Los being on o' - loves being on the big stage. The Centre Court match
:15:28. > :15:31.perfect for him. Out here on Court 12, it is still a great court to
:15:32. > :15:35.play on, but it is against somebody he knows very well, it is much more
:15:36. > :15:41.lore key, there is not much interest in it. For him it is a very
:15:42. > :15:53.different and more difficult mental challenge. Mannarino comes here,
:15:54. > :15:54.both come here in decent form. He reached the final in Turkey on the
:15:55. > :16:08.grass. Monfils obviously got to the final
:16:09. > :16:27.at Eastbourne. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the final.
:16:28. > :16:33.Good patient tennis from Mannarino. Always looked in control of the
:16:34. > :16:39.point. Lovely grass court tennis from Mannarino. Following that
:16:40. > :16:48.backhand into the net. Not an easy smash. But dealt with that well.
:16:49. > :16:59.Beautiful touch. Watched that like a hawk on to his racket. I looked like
:17:00. > :17:00.he was maybe a bit slow behind this, but watching his opponent all the
:17:01. > :17:32.time. You can tell by Mannarino, he is
:17:33. > :17:34.using all the different aspects of grass court tennis. Look how wide he
:17:35. > :17:48.is serving out here. No chance. Very assured service game
:17:49. > :19:03.from Adrian Mannarino. Missed it, should have come in
:19:04. > :19:08.behind that last shot. There was more intensity to Gael Monfils, you
:19:09. > :19:13.can tell by the sound of the ball off his racket on the forehand side.
:19:14. > :19:15.It shows the different gears that he can find. The question is whether he
:19:16. > :19:35.will use it. Three break points for Adrian
:19:36. > :19:55.Mannarino. Wow! Fabulous forehand. From Adrian
:19:56. > :20:04.Mannarino, gives him the early break on Court 12.
:20:05. > :20:10.He has a wonderfully care free forehand doesn't he, Adrian
:20:11. > :20:15.Mannarino. Not too flustered with it. It is not the prettiest forehand
:20:16. > :20:20.you will ever see, but on this surface, because it's so flat, it is
:20:21. > :20:24.so effective. With both of his ground strokes, forehand and back.
:20:25. > :20:30.You can see from here the back swing is so short, there is a lot of pace
:20:31. > :20:35.coming off the court and he can use that on either wing beautifully. A
:20:36. > :20:40.good point on Adrian Mannarino is to say OK his ranking is around 50 at
:20:41. > :20:48.the moment, he has been higher, but almost on this surface you can add a
:20:49. > :20:54.lot of spaces on top of that, because on top of what his actual
:20:55. > :20:58.game style in terms of swings, actually add the left-handedness to
:20:59. > :21:02.that and you will see his serve is not the quickest, but it is hard to
:21:03. > :21:10.read and it spins off the court. He is a nightmare for any player on
:21:11. > :21:14.this surface. He has never beaten two seeded players at a Grand Slam
:21:15. > :21:53.before. If he carries on like this, who knows?
:21:54. > :22:31.It is a lonely place being a coach. Gael Monfils' coach in the black
:22:32. > :23:14.T-shirt. Bet he can't believe his luck,
:23:15. > :23:19.Jamie? Yes, it is looking like a very difficult afternoon ahead for
:23:20. > :23:22.Gael Monfils. We talked about the difficulties Adrian Mannarino
:23:23. > :23:28.possesses. It is so important that Monfils has a plan for this match.
:23:29. > :23:39.And it looks at this moment like he doesn't!
:23:40. > :23:46.Spraying every ground stroke wide at the moment. Look at that - ten
:23:47. > :24:08.unforced errors in just six games. That is the shot. Which we have been
:24:09. > :24:18.used to from Gael Monfils. But it has just been missing.
:24:19. > :25:09.That is the type of shot Monfils can get out of this game.
:25:10. > :25:19.Beautiful! Over the highest part of the net. Wonderful forehand from
:25:20. > :25:21.Monfils. What a display of skill and strength and timing. That ball
:25:22. > :25:48.barely got above his shoe laces. How can you account for this? The
:25:49. > :25:54.way wardness from Monfils. I think those who have watched him play down
:25:55. > :25:59.the years have got used to it. He can go AWOL during sets and then a
:26:00. > :26:04.click of a finger he can be back in. Sometimes it is a frustration for
:26:05. > :26:08.his fans who have seen so much brilliance from him over the years.
:26:09. > :26:14.Can you imagine being his coach? Where you might have had a plan,
:26:15. > :26:19.done all the preparation, discussed what was good in the previous match
:26:20. > :26:25.and then certainly from a viewer's point of view, looking at the first,
:26:26. > :26:29.how long have we been playing, 20 on minutes, and you just think, well,
:26:30. > :26:33.it looks like he hasn't come out of second or third gear and the
:26:34. > :26:56.question is, why not? And nobody really knows other than him!
:26:57. > :27:29.Adrian Mannarino with the new balls. And the break.
:27:30. > :27:37.If every single tennis player was the same and you knew what you were
:27:38. > :27:49.going to get every time, it would be a boring sport to watch!
:27:50. > :28:13.Still serving out wide, Adrian Mannarino.
:28:14. > :29:07.That was a tentative point from both players. Very passive from Monfils.
:29:08. > :29:18.Oh, no! He had done all the hard work. And now he has two break
:29:19. > :29:22.points to defend. Monfils got very lucky in that point. Look at that
:29:23. > :29:28.slice - it is not doing anything, it is sitting up. The pressure of
:29:29. > :29:49.15-30. At some point, one of these players
:29:50. > :29:55.will start hitting the ball with some conviction!
:29:56. > :30:23.UMPIRE: Mr Monfils challenging the call. It was a pushed backhand.
:30:24. > :30:38.There was no intent behind that shot and it might be his undoing.
:30:39. > :30:41.Equally, what was Monfils doing challenging that? Two break points
:30:42. > :31:11.saved. Who's going to take this match by
:31:12. > :31:25.the scruff of the neck? It's there to be taken by somebody.
:31:26. > :31:33.Now that's good old-fashioned grass court tennis. A great use of the
:31:34. > :31:37.left-handed advantage. Closed this ball down. A lot of commitment and
:31:38. > :32:03.conviction on that volley. Fabulous from Monfils! A brutal
:32:04. > :32:08.example of how you turn defence into attack. Yeah, the first flash of
:32:09. > :32:13.brilliance so far in this match from Monfils. Mannarino doing a good job
:32:14. > :32:17.of making him hit one more ball. Monfils up to the task of putting
:32:18. > :33:27.that smash away. This time he gets it!
:33:28. > :33:36.Forehand did enough damage and Monfils is back on level terms.
:33:37. > :33:53.Court 12 on the middle Saturday here at Wimbledon.
:33:54. > :34:31.That sound is really causing Monfils problems.
:34:32. > :35:00.Loads of space down the line, Mannarino chose to go across court.
:35:01. > :35:13.Oh! Wonderful bit of flair there from Monfils, all in vain in the
:35:14. > :35:30.end, but the crowd loved it. The nonchalance of that.
:35:31. > :35:46.That came is basically Gale Monfils in a nutshell. I was about to say I
:35:47. > :35:50.was getting ready for the change of ends, more conviction to Monfils
:35:51. > :35:55.having got the break back and then at 40-0 no need for the trick shot,
:35:56. > :35:59.no chance of winning the point off it. It's absolutely, you are
:36:00. > :36:03.correct, it sums him up in a nutshell. But also makes him very
:36:04. > :36:07.difficult to play against because you actually, how do you get rhythm
:36:08. > :36:10.against that? You are not sure what's happening. That ball wasn't
:36:11. > :36:16.at full stretch, it wasn't too much pace, he could have easily picked
:36:17. > :36:26.that up. But the crowd love him for it. He has been taking lessons from
:36:27. > :36:33.Dustin Brown who he actually played at Roland Garos when he beat him it
:36:34. > :36:39.was his 400th Tour level win. And yet he has never progressed beyond a
:36:40. > :36:46.semifinal in a major, has six titles on the ATP Tour, the last one in
:36:47. > :36:55.2016 in Washington. And never reached the fourth round here. Can
:36:56. > :37:15.he banish those demons? From 4-2 down, to 5-4 up.
:37:16. > :37:36.That's a great shot. No angle to work with for Mannarino there.
:37:37. > :39:00.Both these players really struggling for rhythm. We have been on court
:39:01. > :39:44.over half an hour now. There is definitely an understanding
:39:45. > :39:48.in Monfils' play that Mannarino struggles to generate his own pace
:39:49. > :39:54.but it's finding the balance between doing enough with those shots so
:39:55. > :40:22.that you are not giving too much of an advantage to the opponent.
:40:23. > :40:30.Yeah, beautifully orchestrated point that time from Monfils. Chose his
:40:31. > :40:47.moment to attack and now it's a set point.
:40:48. > :42:12.Both these two are making really hard work of this opening set.
:42:13. > :42:20.It's infuriating for Monfils. He's deliberately trying to take the pace
:42:21. > :42:25.off this ball and asking this man in the picture to inject it, that time
:42:26. > :43:02.it didn't work out and Mannarino holds.
:43:03. > :43:15.Great rally. What a great chase even from Adrian Mannarino. I thought it
:43:16. > :43:42.was a bit of a lost cause, but a great effort.
:43:43. > :43:51.Boy did he need that game, he leads 6-5 in this opening set.
:43:52. > :43:57.STUDIO: Tense time on court 12. We will be back with this match. We can
:43:58. > :44:06.show you what's been happening elsewhere. Querrey has gone through
:44:07. > :44:11.against Tsonga. He needed to hold serve to stay in the match but he
:44:12. > :44:15.was broken so Querrey is through and it's the same thing happened to
:44:16. > :44:20.Tsonga at the French Open when he came out the next day and lost his
:44:21. > :44:26.serve in the 4th set. So it's Querrey through to face Kevin
:44:27. > :44:33.Anderson in the next round. A couple of matches on Centre Court.
:44:34. > :44:43.That match is live on BBC One. On court number one last year's
:44:44. > :44:53.finalist Raonic is 5-4 up Ramos-Vinolas, that
:44:54. > :46:27.is on the red button. The body language is speaking
:46:28. > :47:16.volumes here. Head down, shoulders hunched.
:47:17. > :47:26.Gosh! Mannarino has the last laugh. Another one of those points that's
:47:27. > :47:32.good to watch but you have to question what Gael Monfils is doing.
:47:33. > :47:39.Nevertheless, good finish from Mannarino.
:47:40. > :48:05.We head to a tie-break. Monfils will start. But who will finish?
:48:06. > :48:11.He can look half-hearted and ininterested sometimes, Gael
:48:12. > :48:57.Monfils. Didn't really get his feet right for
:48:58. > :49:41.that shot. Only played a set and he looks exhausted.
:49:42. > :49:52.A 10th forehand unforced error from the racket of gael Monfils. I think
:49:53. > :49:58.that's 16 overall. Certainly a couple more of those in this
:49:59. > :50:26.tie-of-break would be enough to lose the set now.
:50:27. > :50:38.Oh, he should be finishing those off and he just got another piece of
:50:39. > :50:51.luck. A 19-shot rally when no one really wanted to take it on.
:50:52. > :50:59.He finally opens the shoulders and let's rip. That's the one-two punch
:51:00. > :51:04.with a big serve and big forehand that you do think that Monfils would
:51:05. > :51:07.be able to repeat over and over again, especially on this surface,
:51:08. > :51:11.you could win so many points in that manner. Certainly hasn't
:51:12. > :51:44.materialised in this match so far. That's beautiful from Mannarino.
:51:45. > :51:48.Stayed low on it and then whipped it up. That's one of Mannarino's best
:51:49. > :51:56.forehands of the match so far. A bit of extra work with his feet to get
:51:57. > :52:02.up to that ball. It gave him a bit more pace.
:52:03. > :52:51.A good healthy crowd here on 12. Just about 1,000 packed in here.
:52:52. > :52:56.Are they going to watch an upset? The world number 51, Adrian
:52:57. > :53:00.Mannarino, with the advantage in this tie-break.
:53:01. > :53:12.Oh! Wow! Look at the execution on this. What
:53:13. > :53:16.was so impressive was how aggressive, you could hear the spin
:53:17. > :53:22.of the ball touching the strings. Look at that catching the line, a
:53:23. > :53:58.little puff of white something, not chalk.
:53:59. > :54:11.Now Mannarino has three opportunities to take this first
:54:12. > :54:20.set. It has been a cagey 50 minutes. Neither player really wanting to
:54:21. > :54:34.seize the initiative. Two chances on his serve.
:54:35. > :54:40.He takes it with the first. A mediocre set but it belongs to
:54:41. > :55:00.Adrian Mannarino. The intensity has been lacking,
:55:01. > :55:05.Jamie. In the end, Adrian Mannarino did just enough. You look for the
:55:06. > :55:09.yellow on these graphics. To be honest, it's one side, a bit on the
:55:10. > :55:15.other. Yeah, that's the summary of the set. Nothing massively sticking
:55:16. > :55:17.out. Normally you look at serve dominance, no amazing numbers from
:55:18. > :55:23.either player. What you do look at is the unforced
:55:24. > :55:28.error count from Gael Monfils of 17 and a few of those at big times. In
:55:29. > :55:32.a way, in the context of this match, and Mannarino trying to cause an
:55:33. > :55:38.upset, the biggest - potentially the biggest moment of that set was at
:55:39. > :55:42.4-2, he was 15-30 and short forehand he missed, a potential chance for
:55:43. > :55:46.double break. Monfils obviously got back into the set. From Mannarino's
:55:47. > :55:50.point of view and his state of mind to win that set, having had that
:55:51. > :55:54.leading position, is absolutely massive. If he had lost that first
:55:55. > :55:55.set I think the chances of causing an upset would have gone down
:55:56. > :56:10.considerably. Confirmation of the break points
:56:11. > :56:15.won. Monfils has had six opportunities.
:56:16. > :56:27.And his coach is lost for words. He has the chance to set the tone in
:56:28. > :56:36.this second set. He will be serving first. A busy bustling court here,
:56:37. > :57:36.Court 12 alongside Court Two. That's more like it from Monfils.
:57:37. > :58:14.Approached that with a degree of confidence there.
:58:15. > :58:21.Perfect example of how a left-hander can wreak havoc with his serve on
:58:22. > :59:24.the grass. Meat and drink for Mannarino. He
:59:25. > :59:29.takes the opening game of this second set.
:59:30. > :59:34.STUDIO: Little between these Frenchmen on court 12. It is
:59:35. > :59:44.advantage Mannarino at the moment. We are going to leave that match at
:59:45. > :59:47.the moment. I am not sure... We are going to leave this match. It
:59:48. > :59:53.continues on the red button. This match continues on the red button.
:59:54. > :00:04.And on the BBC Sport website. We are going to leave it and head
:00:05. > :00:09.over to Court Two where Kerber is taking on Rodgers. Rodgers, who lost
:00:10. > :00:14.in the first round for the past two years, but she is a quarter-finalist
:00:15. > :00:18.at the French Open and defeated Halep in the Australian Open. The
:00:19. > :00:20.top seed in the picture is in some trouble here. Let's drop in and join
:00:21. > :00:37.it. A nice disguise on that backhand
:00:38. > :00:41.shot from Kerber. She has been the victim of two equally as good from
:00:42. > :01:58.her opponent, Kerber. Oh! Well played! Shelby Rogers, but
:01:59. > :02:05.what good running by the No 1 seed. That is what it takes to take a
:02:06. > :02:10.point off the world No 1. That created the opportunity to hit into
:02:11. > :03:05.the open court and just too much space for Kerber to recover.
:03:06. > :03:14.She is battling well to hold her advantage. And by a break in the
:03:15. > :04:12.third game of the match. Good variety in the serving
:04:13. > :04:58.department. The first ace from Kerber.
:04:59. > :05:10.First love game. And very much the first uncontested game up to now
:05:11. > :05:20.it's been even Steven with the No 1 seed being asked a lot of questions
:05:21. > :05:25.by the No 70 in the rankings. This is Angelique Kerber's tenth
:05:26. > :05:30.Wimbledon, that runner up finish in 2016, when she won two other Grand
:05:31. > :05:35.Slams in that year. It has been her best year on Tour so far. The
:05:36. > :05:44.gentleman on the right, Torben Beltz is that gentleman in the white hat,
:05:45. > :06:08.he is Angelique Kerber's coach. No 1 player in the world.
:06:09. > :06:24.The crowd swelling at news of the No 1 seed being a break down gets
:06:25. > :07:51.around the lawns and... Rogers to serve with new balls.
:07:52. > :08:00.Will she live to regret that? She wasn't trying to hit a winner off
:08:01. > :08:03.that ball, just trying to get it back deep and in good court position
:08:04. > :08:46.and ended up pushing it long. Well at the moment she is being
:08:47. > :08:56.matched when they get into an end to end rally.
:08:57. > :09:36.She did a better job on that second serve than the first serve. The
:09:37. > :09:39.first serve was a pit of -- bit of a push. The second one went away from
:09:40. > :09:56.the Rogers backhand. There was a long conversation in
:09:57. > :11:12.that last game, Kerber, with her coach.
:11:13. > :11:26.Well that's been a very interesting half hour. And Kerber, she hasn't
:11:27. > :11:36.dropped a set so far in the Championship, four in four in the
:11:37. > :11:43.first game. And then 7-5, 7-5 in the second round. Her opponent having
:11:44. > :11:47.opportunities. It is a question, Liz, whether Shelby Rogers will take
:11:48. > :11:51.her opportunities in the next game. She has to continue doing what she
:11:52. > :11:57.has been doing up to this point. Good serving, good use of the court.
:11:58. > :12:01.She will need to keep an eye on the unforced errors, Shelby Rogers,
:12:02. > :12:06.because now in the match she has got nine winners and three unforced
:12:07. > :12:12.errors. That is a good ratio for her. She hits back off the -- big
:12:13. > :12:19.off the ground and quite flat. It is a great opportunity to win the first
:12:20. > :12:20.set for Rogers. Getting quite a lot of encouragement it would seem from
:12:21. > :12:58.the crowd. Such a contrast between court
:12:59. > :13:03.position in that point. Kerber on the baseline or inside the baseline.
:13:04. > :13:07.Rogers just a long way behind the baseline, scurrying from side to
:13:08. > :13:27.side. Kerber just dominating that point.
:13:28. > :13:43.No. Just a quick look up at a coach. A bit of a brain fade there from
:13:44. > :13:45.Kerber! Don't think that was the right shot to be selected. I think
:13:46. > :14:24.he would agree with you. Suddenly got much harder for Rogers.
:14:25. > :14:28.Just in the moment. Can I win this set? Can I carry on calmly as I have
:14:29. > :15:25.been playing so far? Forget about the position.
:15:26. > :15:32.UMPIRE: Miss Kerber is challenging the call. Won't be any joy here for
:15:33. > :16:05.Kerber. Gives her more time to clear her head.
:16:06. > :16:13.Just listen to the crowd's reaction! They have been sensing that this
:16:14. > :16:21.could be a surprise right from the word go. And they can feel it.
:16:22. > :16:29.I didn't think Rogers had done quite enough that last point on that slow
:16:30. > :16:34.ball, I thought she was going to go for something bigger, but she went
:16:35. > :16:38.straight back to Kerber. Kerber had to hit an awkward forehand. She
:16:39. > :16:46.didn't give herself a huge amount of room to hit the forehand and that's
:16:47. > :16:50.what drew the error. Shelby Rogers is giving Kerber everything she can
:16:51. > :16:55.handle. Instead of going for the big one it was right in the hitting zone
:16:56. > :17:04.almost of Kerber and she just pulled it wide. Good variety though from
:17:05. > :17:12.Rogers. Good serving. She's had a bit of change of pace from time to
:17:13. > :17:20.time. And there is two points in that first set. The second serve
:17:21. > :17:35.points won for Rogers, 55%. She would like to improve that.
:17:36. > :17:41.If she can keep the unforced errors under control, Shelby Rogers, she
:17:42. > :18:23.will be right there in this match. Oh yes! Smart play from Rogers. It
:18:24. > :18:29.was the volley that won the point, but it was the sliced backhand from
:18:30. > :18:31.Rogers that made it really difficult for Kerber. Just had to pop it up
:18:32. > :20:09.and Rogers was there. Ah! Just couldn't quite get the
:20:10. > :20:14.smash away, Kerber, the second one she struck better than the first one
:20:15. > :20:25.and then Rogers unable to drag it back into the court.
:20:26. > :20:53.It is a bit of an understatement to say Angelique Kerber needed that
:20:54. > :20:59.start. She finished the game better than she started. A let caught she
:21:00. > :21:03.got and a couple of awkward over heads, it could have been a
:21:04. > :21:11.different result. It could be, the fact she did manage to win it. But
:21:12. > :21:25.her opponent is certainly playing well.
:21:26. > :23:08.I thought that would have been a worth a challenge. Yes, indeed.
:23:09. > :23:17.That is well long. The task has got a little bit harder suddenly for
:23:18. > :23:28.Rogers. That is a weapon that can get her
:23:29. > :23:57.back on course. Oh! She wouldn't like a replay of
:23:58. > :24:05.that. She just wiped her grip at the end of that with her skirt, as if to
:24:06. > :24:07.say, Gee, maybe my grip slipped. She is wearing sweat bands on both
:24:08. > :24:17.wrists though. Most of the players these day get
:24:18. > :24:23.the ball person to give them the towel almost after every point, but
:24:24. > :24:28.both these girls are playing rather quickly between points. And bless
:24:29. > :24:34.them for that! Less than the required 20 seconds! Oh, that's
:24:35. > :24:50.finely done. Ace No 3 was a bit of a wobbly game.
:24:51. > :24:54.She held her nerve. No sign it must be said that of Kerber being
:24:55. > :25:50.particularly troubled, except with the scoreboard.
:25:51. > :25:56.Again at 79mph that second serve, really just in the middle of the
:25:57. > :25:58.square there for Rogers. Well struck return. Immediately Kerber on the
:25:59. > :26:12.defensive. A big point this one. Well struck. Right in the hitting
:26:13. > :26:14.zone for Rogers. Didn't have to move at all. Just turned the shoulders.
:26:15. > :26:30.Two break points. Oh! She knew what she wanted to do,
:26:31. > :26:34.Rogers, just the execution. She saw Kerber was a long way behind the
:26:35. > :27:01.baseline and thought, I'm just going to play the drop shot.
:27:02. > :27:11.Well... Couple of big shots from Rogers. I think just got the feeling
:27:12. > :27:17.that maybe Kerber was just trying to sort of find her way early in the
:27:18. > :27:30.second set and then that lady to her credit, winner and then another
:27:31. > :27:35.winner. So that is ten winners for Shelby Rogers and two came in that
:27:36. > :27:40.game and other forceable shots. That is how she has got to this position
:27:41. > :27:55.against the No 1 player in the world. It is a lovely court this No
:27:56. > :27:59.2. Changed them around. 2 and 3. 2 used to be much closer. Now in the
:28:00. > :28:08.distance. But the crowd seem to love it and it has an atmosphere. Which
:28:09. > :28:13.the old Court Two has lost. I'm getting a nod from a much more
:28:14. > :28:20.experienced person. No one liked playing on the Court 3 thousand that
:28:21. > :28:22.used to be Court Two. Not so many of the old names. Is there to be a
:28:23. > :28:57.shock here? Must be thinking, I'm the one who
:28:58. > :29:03.should be making my opponent run around the place! She is having to
:29:04. > :29:05.do more than her fair share, thanks to this lady's quality and composure
:29:06. > :29:28.and just general good tennis. Amazing what confidence can do,
:29:29. > :29:32.Barry. Shelby Rogers had never won a match in two previous attempts at
:29:33. > :29:38.Wimbledon. And she is in the third round for the first time and playing
:29:39. > :29:44.like she is completely at home on a grass court.
:29:45. > :29:59.And again. Just winners rolling off the Rogers racket.
:30:00. > :30:18.Have they come to the right place for the story of the day? Well
:30:19. > :30:28.that's her first love game. Flashed by and she's 3-1 to the good. A set
:30:29. > :30:41.and 3-1. The No 1 seed certainly in trouble.
:30:42. > :30:48.She did well to reach it but she had no chance of controlling it. This is
:30:49. > :30:53.a desperate slice backhand from Kerber. She's tried to outhit
:30:54. > :31:00.Rodgers, hasn't been successful in that department so that's a new look
:31:01. > :31:12.from Kerber, behind the baseline to hit that.
:31:13. > :31:21.Rodgers probably thinks, you know what, why not? It's hard to run
:31:22. > :31:47.around a lefty serve that is swinging into you, though.
:31:48. > :32:31.A 10th forehand winner from Rogers. It's been a good weapon for her.
:32:32. > :32:41.On the WTO tour these days a coach can come down and have a little
:32:42. > :32:46.pow-wow or read the riot act or what not. I don't like that. I don't, I
:32:47. > :32:50.wonder what you would be saying to Kerber if you were in that position?
:32:51. > :32:54.I like the fact you can't do it at Grand Slams, it's part of the
:32:55. > :32:58.problem-solving process of having to win a match. Kerber is behind the
:32:59. > :33:09.pump. 11 winners to Rogers '21. She's got
:33:10. > :33:15.to make sure she goes through the process here, Kerber, and not try
:33:16. > :33:24.and focus too much on what the score is at this point. She has to find a
:33:25. > :33:28.way to solve the riddle of breaking Rogers' serve. She needs to solve it
:33:29. > :33:34.pretty soon. The coach will probably be thinking
:33:35. > :34:23.no time like the present. Love the way she does that! Looks as
:34:24. > :34:29.though she's going to give it a real wallop and then gets out the frying
:34:30. > :34:39.pan and pushes it forward! Just controlled.
:34:40. > :34:49.The serve's good. I think the umpire is right again. It was called out.
:34:50. > :34:55.It was overruled by the umpire, correctly.
:34:56. > :35:02.On the line. She better keep a count, we know what happens if you
:35:03. > :35:15.lose count of how many challenges you have left.
:35:16. > :35:22.Oh! The ball just seemed to get away from her. It completely stopped, the
:35:23. > :35:25.ball. Kerber just didn't make the required adjustment. A step too far
:35:26. > :35:42.away. Terrific game from Rogers there.
:35:43. > :35:49.Kerb certificate going to serve with new balls and Rogers is getting a
:35:50. > :35:55.new restring. And hoping that racket serves her as well as the previous
:35:56. > :36:06.one. She has to establish some authority here, Kerber.
:36:07. > :36:31.It appears to be very difficult for her.
:36:32. > :36:42.Just rolling that second serve in, Kerber. No racket head speed. The
:36:43. > :37:19.toss gets out in front and it just becomes a push, the serve.
:37:20. > :37:28.You get the feeling that one break's not enough here in this second set.
:37:29. > :37:33.You feel like Rogers needs the insurance of the second break. Two
:37:34. > :37:59.unforced errors. 73mph that serve. That's not going
:38:00. > :38:17.to bother anybody. A chance for Rogers to lead 5-2.
:38:18. > :38:28.That's better from Kerber. She desperately needed that. She got
:38:29. > :39:15.away with a slow second serve, though, Kerber. Just 75mph.
:39:16. > :39:25.You have to say that from a spectator's point of view that keeps
:39:26. > :39:31.the pot boiling nicely. You would think Kerber is yet to be able to
:39:32. > :39:35.break the Rogers' serve and if you have a set and 5-2 and you haven't
:39:36. > :39:48.lost serve, the match is yours for the taking, isn't it? But to her
:39:49. > :39:53.Kerber is a fighter. There is the fist pump after that last point. You
:39:54. > :40:01.don't get to number one by letting tough matches go. Fight to the end.
:40:02. > :40:04.There might be one or two, am I being unfair, that would be
:40:05. > :40:09.surprised she is at number one with the service she offers quite often?
:40:10. > :40:13.Yes, but the other parts of her game, retrieving, big hitting, they
:40:14. > :40:18.make up for the lack of pace on the serve. The serve isn't always like
:40:19. > :40:26.that. From time to time Kerber can serve very effectively. It's just
:40:27. > :40:36.when she gets tight it tends to get short and soft. Those two words
:40:37. > :40:41.would not apply to the serve of Shelby Rogers so far. Can she
:40:42. > :40:50.continue a successful run? That's a good mix-up. Kerber was
:40:51. > :40:53.looking for the one back to the backhand side and Rogers just went
:40:54. > :41:15.the other way. She didn't move on to the ball.
:41:16. > :41:20.She's waiting for the ball to come to her, Kerber. Was one step too far
:41:21. > :43:09.away from the ball. Great tennis! Terrific point. Kerber
:43:10. > :43:19.was completely out of that point, at least two, maybe three times, and
:43:20. > :43:27.found a way. And then hit the winner. Rogers on the full stretch.
:43:28. > :43:31.There is the stab from Kerber. Is it going to make the difference? Break
:43:32. > :44:01.point for the number one seed. The best player in the world in the
:44:02. > :44:09.ladies game at the moment, according to the rankings, has found herself.
:44:10. > :44:23.Rogers had 30-0 in that game, just a little bit cautious, wasn't she?
:44:24. > :45:50.This time she does give it a wallop. She's hit a lot of balls the last
:45:51. > :45:55.couple of games where she has hit the big shot and hasn't moved
:45:56. > :46:06.forward. On this point she does exactly that.
:46:07. > :46:54.She's seemingly unphased by the fortunes of the last game.
:46:55. > :47:03.She will be feeling a lot better now, Angelique Kerber. How fortunes
:47:04. > :47:12.can change. Suddenly the outsider has to serve to stay in the set. Ten
:47:13. > :47:18.minutes ago, or maybe more, Shelby Rogers had a point or 5-2 and in the
:47:19. > :47:24.last couple of games Kerber has won three games in a row now, the last
:47:25. > :47:27.couple of games Rogers has hit the big shot and just hasn't made the
:47:28. > :47:32.move forward. You know this lady on screen is one of the best
:47:33. > :47:36.retrievers, she's going to get everything back. You really do need
:47:37. > :47:41.to come in and finish the point. We saw her do it once in that last
:47:42. > :47:45.game. It's easy to be critical, but if she could make herself come
:47:46. > :48:00.forward on those balls, rather than giving Kerber too many bites at the
:48:01. > :48:04.cherry to stay in the point. The crowd certainly are well involved in
:48:05. > :49:24.this ladies third round match. You can just see the wheels going in
:49:25. > :49:45.Rogers' head, I need to stay aggressive, I need to stay positive.
:49:46. > :51:11.Tremendous return from Kerber. Just getting the back edge of the line.
:51:12. > :51:22.There is a let-off. That serve, once again, hit slow, it was on the line.
:51:23. > :51:25.If I was Rogers I would be right inside the baseline, making Kerber
:51:26. > :51:34.look at me on these second serves. And again, you know the serve is
:51:35. > :51:55.shaky. Often that second serve is the best
:51:56. > :52:07.opportunity you have in the point to hit a really aggressive shot.
:52:08. > :52:36.Oh! You just don't know what's going to come next. Angelique looks up to
:52:37. > :52:42.the sun as if to say the sun got in my eyes, maybe it was a quick glance
:52:43. > :53:21.down the other end, Rogers was covering the forehand.
:53:22. > :54:12.Quite a lot of stories in this game. 5-5.
:54:13. > :54:21.There were opportunities there for the unseeded player. She tried to be
:54:22. > :54:25.aggressive, Rogers, off that second serve and it just was awkward enough
:54:26. > :54:32.because it was curling into her. It's hard to run around on that
:54:33. > :54:38.second court when you are playing a lefty to hit a forehand off that
:54:39. > :54:44.shot. But at this stage of a match the subtlies are just so small. I
:54:45. > :54:49.feel like Rogers needed to intimidate a little bit more when
:54:50. > :54:59.she has the opportunity on the Kerber second serve. She hasn't won
:55:00. > :55:09.a singles match at Wimbledon before this year. First round in Nottingham
:55:10. > :55:16.she lost. So really didn't have much form coming into the Championships,
:55:17. > :55:22.Rogers. She's ranked number 10 only in the United States.
:55:23. > :55:32.But she seemed to have the right attitude when she came out.
:55:33. > :56:05.She's proved she has confidence. And she has - she will keep believing.
:56:06. > :56:32.She was hardly balanced to play that.
:56:33. > :56:41.Just got the edge of of the line, that forehand from Rogers, I think.
:56:42. > :56:59.It was more out than in. But it just got a piece.
:57:00. > :57:45.Just what she needed, a big first serve.
:57:46. > :57:53.Kerber did a great job of getting that first serve back, it was right
:57:54. > :58:16.in the corner. Making her opponent play another ball.
:58:17. > :58:25.Well, you could argue both those shots were misguided. The first
:58:26. > :59:00.actually played the second she didn't guide into play.
:59:01. > :59:14.Tremendous from Rogers. Just catching Kerber in that forehand
:59:15. > :00:02.corner. Big hitting from both ladies at this stage in the match.
:00:03. > :00:13.So the crowd have been increasingly excited and now comes the tie-break.
:00:14. > :00:45.To up the atmosphere even more. Kerber will open it.
:00:46. > :02:33.Big hitting from the number one player of the world. That's the shot
:02:34. > :02:47.that won the point. First success for the server in this
:02:48. > :03:14.tie-break. 4-1, it always looks such an
:03:15. > :04:00.advantage, but it's only one break. APPLAUSE
:04:01. > :04:05.UMPIRE: 5-1. A tired looking shot there from Shelby Rogers there in
:04:06. > :04:10.that last point. She's covered a lot of court here, but physically,
:04:11. > :04:18.Kerber looks like the one that is getting stronger than Rogers.
:04:19. > :04:28.Looking a little weary. A run of five points for the number one seed.
:04:29. > :04:44.Rogers has to make this one count, surely.
:04:45. > :05:02.APPLAUSE UMPIRE: 6-1, Miss Kerber. But she
:05:03. > :05:03.doesn't. Five opportunities. For Angelique Kerber to tie this match
:05:04. > :05:33.at one set all. COMMENTATOR: Just waiting for the
:05:34. > :05:38.departure of an unwelcome guest that's quite small and that cannot
:05:39. > :06:19.be seen on camera, but has now departed.
:06:20. > :06:34.Not good enough. Not good enough for her, Angelique Kerber. UMPIRE: One
:06:35. > :06:38.set all. COMMENTATOR: For so long it looked
:06:39. > :06:44.as though she might be the victim of a big upset, but she's steadied the
:06:45. > :06:52.ship and she now has a third set to play. Carry herself through to round
:06:53. > :06:55.four, if she can. That's why she's the world number one because she
:06:56. > :06:59.knows the big points and how to win them. We will be right back with
:07:00. > :07:19.this match. We can update you with results from earlier.
:07:20. > :10:15.That's a good solution to the problem for Shelby Rogers, to be
:10:16. > :10:17.able to come forward and make those winning volleys. I'd like to see her
:10:18. > :12:10.do it just a little bit more. That's the type you saw in the first
:12:11. > :12:11.set-and-a-half from Shelby Rogers, just forcing the play and moving
:12:12. > :12:48.forward. UMPIRE: The ball was called in.
:12:49. > :12:51.Maybe it did get a piece of the line. We're going to see a
:12:52. > :13:28.challenge. UMPIRE: Advantage. Fighting for everything she's worth
:13:29. > :13:34.here, Shelby Rogers, she knows she has to hold here. The momentum of
:13:35. > :13:53.this match has really changed quite significantly after that tie-break.
:13:54. > :14:00.UMPIRE: Advantage Miss Kerber. COMMENTATOR: Fourth break point for
:14:01. > :14:43.Kerber. UMPIRE: Advantage Miss Kerber.
:14:44. > :16:01.COMMENTATOR: And a fifth. That one didn't go over. Angelique
:16:02. > :16:07.Kerber, she's just making Shelby Rogers play every single ball.
:16:08. > :16:12.Tremendous amount of pressure on Rogers now. Sixth opportunity for
:16:13. > :16:37.Kerber to break in this game. Ah.
:16:38. > :16:39.UMPIRE: Deuce. That's a soft unforced error from
:16:40. > :17:01.Kerber. Is She certainly has made a play for
:17:02. > :17:05.the last couple of points. Up until then, Kerber had just been really
:17:06. > :17:29.tough in this game. Rogers has a game point.
:17:30. > :17:43.APPLAUSE Great care and happiness. A little
:17:44. > :17:46.bit slow, wasn't she, Rogers, to get up to that. Too much court for her
:17:47. > :18:10.to cover in the next ball. So many of the Rogers forehands went
:18:11. > :18:17.up the line. This time she went back across court. Kerber was there,
:18:18. > :18:32.though. Seventh break point. Opening game now into the 13th minute.
:18:33. > :18:41.Oh what a shame that it should end a game like that. How crucial will it
:18:42. > :18:47.prove to be? First double fault for the match, for Shelby Rogers, right
:18:48. > :18:51.there. That's a disappointing way for her to lose the serve she
:18:52. > :20:33.struggled vie landly. -- valiantly. Haven't seen that before from
:20:34. > :20:39.Rogers, to be able to smack the return of serve and come to the net.
:20:40. > :20:44.Cuts down the amount of time that Kerber has to hit that next shot.
:20:45. > :20:58.Second serve is getting softer and softer from Kerber.
:20:59. > :21:08.The first serve that time was just 80mph, 84mph. The second one was
:21:09. > :21:12.70mph. Shelby Rogers has really got to pay attention to that and be
:21:13. > :21:17.aware that Kerber is feeling it on the serve.
:21:18. > :21:26.UMPIRE: Fault. Miss Kerber is challenging the ball. It was called
:21:27. > :21:50.fault. By the preverbal whisker. There is a
:21:51. > :21:59.moth, or some kind of bug still bothering Kerber.
:22:00. > :22:17.Is That's a terrific point from Shelby Rogers.
:22:18. > :22:32.Oh! She's living dangerously, isn't she,
:22:33. > :23:21.Kerber. Second serve, break point. UMPIRE: Advantage Miss Kerber. Game,
:23:22. > :23:26.Miss Kerber. New balls, please. Miss Kerber leads 2-0. Happy position in
:23:27. > :23:30.spite of her play. It's not brilliant from Kerber. What is
:23:31. > :23:35.brilliant is the fact she's fighting hard. The tennis itself isn't
:23:36. > :23:39.brilliant. The last two points from Shelby Rogers became too much, two
:23:40. > :23:48.unforced errors and the game has gone.
:23:49. > :25:52.UMPIRE: Game, Miss Rogers. Miss Kerber leads, two games to one,
:25:53. > :26:07.final set. Big applause for that hold
:26:08. > :26:11.confidently by Rogers. Second serve was 11mph. That's a bit of a
:26:12. > :26:19.difference, isn't it, between the two? We've talked about Rogers
:26:20. > :26:24.throughout this match. She has some terrific weapons. She's hit big from
:26:25. > :26:30.the back of the court. She's had the serve there, but it's the unforced
:26:31. > :26:32.errors. There they are right there from Rogers.
:26:33. > :26:43.Certainly, when you are playing against the number one player in the
:26:44. > :26:49.world, 36 unforced errors is just way too many.
:26:50. > :26:54.Um pipe: Time. If you look at that stat alone. It's quite amazing we
:26:55. > :26:59.are in the third set here. Because the winners have been there as well
:27:00. > :27:06.for a lot of the match, but just have abandoned her in the tie-break,
:27:07. > :27:08.Rogers. So back on the job, again. Kerber just with her nose in front,
:27:09. > :28:21.at the moment. Nice point from Rogers. Continuing
:28:22. > :28:25.to go after it here. It's all-or-nothing, really. Playing
:28:26. > :29:40.against someone who is on the top of the tree of women's tennis.
:29:41. > :29:49.Second let called and a point from Rogers. The crowd in unison.
:29:50. > :29:59.Certainly enjoying the contest. Oh. She gave her a chance, but
:30:00. > :30:51.Kerber couldn't take it. Just when you thought Kerber was
:30:52. > :30:58.getting on top, Rogers comes straight back at her with a good
:30:59. > :31:01.game. That second serve of Kerber's though, if she happens to get
:31:02. > :33:02.through this match, it just is really a problem for her.
:33:03. > :33:36.20 forehand winners from Rogers in this match.
:33:37. > :33:45.UMPIRE: Out. Ms Kerber is challenging the call on the
:33:46. > :33:51.baseline. The ball was called out. I haven't seen an umpire overrule more
:33:52. > :34:02.with Hawk-Eye in the court than this guy has. He's done a great job.
:34:03. > :34:09.UMPIRE: Ms Kerber has two challenges remaining. I think he's been right
:34:10. > :34:18.every time. He has. He hasn't missed a beat. The umpires are so reluctant
:34:19. > :34:23.to overrule when they have Hawk-Eye. Just when you thought maybe Shelby
:34:24. > :34:28.Rogers had run her race - Did we doubt her? Come on. Well, look at
:34:29. > :34:31.unforced error count. Sure, sure. It's incredibly high. We did doubt
:34:32. > :34:41.her for a little bit. But maybe we shouldn't have! The balance between
:34:42. > :34:45.winners and errors is fascinating. In a way, that makes her interesting
:34:46. > :34:51.to watch. The difficult thing for Kerber is that she has to come out
:34:52. > :34:52.and serve, which has been the Achilles heel. There's the unforced
:34:53. > :35:07.errors Kerber has to get a high percentage
:35:08. > :35:10.of first serves in here. Shelby Rogers has to look to be aggressive
:35:11. > :35:13.off the second serve, which has been in the 70mph range. All the pressure
:35:14. > :36:12.on the world number one Well played Shelby Rogers.
:36:13. > :36:13.Aggressive grass court point, waiting for the short ball and the
:36:14. > :36:41.volley into the open court. Unlucky there for Rogers, she had
:36:42. > :36:50.the right idea. Big return off the second serve. Just couldn't quite
:36:51. > :36:54.get it far enough away from Kerber to make her stretch.
:36:55. > :37:19.UMPIRE: Fault. He's right. He is right.
:37:20. > :39:03.Shelby Rogers is the player to make all the plays and Angelique Kerber
:39:04. > :39:19.is the one that's just trying to hang in.
:39:20. > :39:35.Got the feeling she really didn't want to hit that slice drop shot,
:39:36. > :40:10.but she did. Full credit to Shelby Rogers.
:40:11. > :40:52.Just ticked over the two-hour mark, this match.
:40:53. > :41:10.Just a little bit late getting to that ball, wasn't she, Shelby
:41:11. > :41:12.Rogers, just didn't quite decide early enough. It ended up to be
:41:13. > :42:20.dropping by the time she got to it. APPLAUSE
:42:21. > :42:26.You have to hand it to her, Angelique Kerber. Beautifully timed
:42:27. > :43:03.drop shot. Oh! She didn't hesitate here,
:43:04. > :43:07.Rogers. She started to move forward as soon as she hit the big forehand,
:43:08. > :43:47.therefore she was in good position to hit the swinging volley.
:43:48. > :44:01.UMPIRE: Ms Rogers is challenging the ball on the baseline. The ball was
:44:02. > :44:09.called in. She thought it was out. Did Shelby actually make a... Two
:44:10. > :44:10.break points. UMPIRE: Ms Rogers has two challenges
:44:11. > :44:31.remaining. The crowd want her to do this. Can
:44:32. > :44:33.you feel it. The crowd enjoy this style of play. It's all or nothing,
:44:34. > :45:36.it's big hitting. It's been a contest which has had so
:45:37. > :45:41.much to predict any outcome, even with the number one player in the
:45:42. > :45:46.world having gained the advantage. That would be a mistake. You would
:45:47. > :45:51.have thought once Kerber won that second set handily and then she got
:45:52. > :45:53.that early break, but in the third said - but the serve, the serve is
:45:54. > :46:09.the problem for Kerber. It doesn't have as much on it as it
:46:10. > :46:13.needs to. More winners than the number of unforced errors, that's
:46:14. > :46:18.the key for Rogers in this match. Kerber is doing what Kerber does
:46:19. > :46:24.best - that is just making her opponent play one more shot,
:46:25. > :46:33.covering the court well. Nothing dramatic.
:46:34. > :47:00.A beautiful afternoon, wonderful tennis match.
:47:01. > :47:12.Oh, couldn't get to it, Rogers! Terrific point. Both girls just
:47:13. > :47:14.digging out everything they possibly can, a couple of shots there were
:47:15. > :47:46.really awkward. Battled all along because of
:47:47. > :47:50.themselves and in spite of themselves. Certainly has you on the
:47:51. > :48:33.edge of the seat. No. It's becoming quite a telling
:48:34. > :48:35.weapon in this third set. That drop shot has served her well, Kerber,
:48:36. > :49:30.off that backhand side. Shelby Rogers has given so much, on
:49:31. > :49:47.the edge of defeat here. But you wouldn't know it.
:49:48. > :49:48.Can't see that style changing any time soon, all or nothing from
:49:49. > :50:17.Rogers. Oh, dear. Her serve has been such a
:50:18. > :50:19.good weapon for Rogers. That's only the second one of the match, only
:50:20. > :50:37.the second double. She was nowhere to be seen then,
:50:38. > :50:51.Kerber. Completely fooled by that. She's determined she's going to make
:50:52. > :51:23.her serve out for it. Because she knows what might happen.
:51:24. > :51:34.Beaten at her own game. And not for the first time. It's been such a
:51:35. > :51:37.feature of this match, the big hitting from Rogers. The unforced
:51:38. > :51:42.errors have been quite substantial also. But gee, when that ball goes
:51:43. > :52:50.in and stays hit. Well! I think she might be a bit
:52:51. > :52:53.nervous. I think she may be. The most remarkable thing about
:52:54. > :52:59.Angelique Kerber, when she serves, is that the serve is rolling in,
:53:00. > :53:04.75mph, but she backs it up so incredibly well. We've seen, haven't
:53:05. > :53:10.we, in this match, that Shelby Rogers, she's been having a crack at
:53:11. > :53:16.the return and Kerber, to her credit, is just steadfast on the
:53:17. > :53:21.baseline. From the second serve to the ground strokes, such a big
:53:22. > :53:25.discrepancy in the Kerber game. What she does, she does so well, making
:53:26. > :53:29.her opponent play and making them hit to the corners and if Shelby
:53:30. > :53:51.Rogers is equal to the task, she can very easily break serve here.
:53:52. > :54:30.Excellent for the ladies game, this contest.
:54:31. > :54:38.Terrific first point. Good exchange from the baseline. Rogers was in
:54:39. > :54:45.trouble. She got back into the point. Then she just went for the
:54:46. > :55:02.slice, thought she'd drop it in short, just lacked the execution.
:55:03. > :55:17.No surprise that Kerber has got two first serves in. She really knows
:55:18. > :55:20.how important that is in this game. And the slice drop shot off the
:55:21. > :55:32.backhand side scores her another point.
:55:33. > :56:04.Another first serve from Kerber. Very well placed.
:56:05. > :56:17.Two match points for the number one seed.
:56:18. > :56:43.Oh, it's long! And Kerber is through. And the crowd stand to both
:56:44. > :56:51.of them. It's been a wonderful contest. Punch and counterpunch,
:56:52. > :56:57.brilliant success and great fallibility. Somehow she's still in
:56:58. > :57:09.the Championship, but she must be wondering quite how. Her opponent
:57:10. > :57:35.Shelby Rogers who makes her exit very quickly, contributed so much
:57:36. > :58:04.and she knows she could, maybe should have won.
:58:05. > :58:10.The crowd enjoying an entertaining match there. Kerber from a set and a
:58:11. > :58:13.break down. All Shelby Rogers will be asking herself some questions
:58:14. > :58:17.about what happened in that second set. She got negative. Angelique
:58:18. > :58:23.Kerber has gone through to the second week of Wimbledon.
:58:24. > :58:31.Milos Raonic has cruised through into the second week of the
:58:32. > :58:37.Championships. She beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas. He goes through to
:58:38. > :58:48.face either Afner or Alexander Zverev. Raonic, last year's's runner
:58:49. > :58:57.up is safely through. -- That was on Ofner. Number one court. Radwanska
:58:58. > :59:02.was winning on Centre Court, beating Baches Baches. Baches Baches took
:59:03. > :59:10.the first set. After that it was all over Radwanska. -- Bacsinszky. She
:59:11. > :59:20.raised the level of her play. . She is through to the second week after
:59:21. > :59:29.a roller-coaster of a year. Another through to Monday is the 24th seed
:59:30. > :59:36.with a big serve. She is marching through the Championships.
:59:37. > :59:43.Riske won that match. Her coach, Pat Cash will be delighted.
:59:44. > :59:47.She will keep an eye on this match. She faces the winner of this one.
:59:48. > :59:52.Caroline Wozniacki up against Anett Kontaveit. If you want to watch that
:59:53. > :59:56.one, you can, it's on the Red Button.
:59:57. > :00:04.Kontaveit has a break of serve there. We are heading over to Court
:00:05. > :00:16.12 this entertaining match between the two Frenchmen.
:00:17. > :00:29.Monfils against Mannarino. We can join this match. We can join it in
:00:30. > :00:35.the company of Jamie Baker and Jameses Burgess.
:00:36. > :00:50.COMMENTATOR: Monfils serving to stay in the fourth set.
:00:51. > :01:01.Genius from Monfils. We've seen flashes of this over the last three
:01:02. > :01:08.hours That's definitely one of the best. He's got nothing to lose at
:01:09. > :01:26.the moment. He was broken in the second game of
:01:27. > :01:35.this fourth set, having been 3-5 down in the third he took it 7-5.
:01:36. > :01:47.Then just had an uncharacteristic three minutes.
:01:48. > :01:54.Umunna: Game, Monfils. Mannarino leads.
:01:55. > :02:05.COMMENTATOR: Court 12, on the middle Saturday of Wimbledon. This match
:02:06. > :02:10.has ebbed and flowed. These two were very cagey for the first hour. They
:02:11. > :02:19.let rip and the ground strokes came thundering down the court. Mannarino
:02:20. > :02:23.taking the first set. Back came Monfils, far more assured, hugely
:02:24. > :02:28.entertaining. Then just when he thought he had the match in his
:02:29. > :03:01.pocket, Mannarino has struck back, serving to take us to a fifth set.
:03:02. > :03:09.UMPIRE: Mannarino is challenging the call.
:03:10. > :03:16.COMMENTATOR: The umpire is from Australia in the chair. Oh! Just.
:03:17. > :03:30.Just long. UMPIRE 30-0, Mr Mannarino has two
:03:31. > :03:55.challenges remaining. Three set points. Points. Oh, no. A
:03:56. > :04:20.little careless with that one. He had break points and set points
:04:21. > :04:24.of his own in the previous set. In the end, it was Monfils who took it.
:04:25. > :04:52.This is where he needs his concentration, more than ever.
:04:53. > :05:36.We are going all the way. We're going to a decider. As we enter
:05:37. > :05:55.another hour, here on Court 12. Based on what you've seen, Jamie
:05:56. > :05:59.Baker, who do you think has what it takes to enter the fourth round?
:06:00. > :06:04.It's a very tough one to call. I mean, there has been so many shifts
:06:05. > :06:19.and swings and momentum in this match. I think when you look back
:06:20. > :06:24.across... Interestingly, set for in terms of stats they were similar to
:06:25. > :06:30.set one to where Monfils kind of really wasn't at the races. I think,
:06:31. > :06:36.when you look across the course of the three hours, the way Monfils
:06:37. > :06:38.started you thought there was a real danger he might actually go out in
:06:39. > :06:42.straight-sets. You didn't know whether he was
:06:43. > :06:47.genuinely going to get his teeth into the match. From Mannarino's
:06:48. > :06:52.point at view, at the worst, he could have won all four of these
:06:53. > :06:55.sets legitimately. What has been impressive from his point of view,
:06:56. > :07:08.is that he's stuck with this and he has got a chance in this fifth set.
:07:09. > :07:22.UMPIRE: Time. Mannarino came through a tough second round match, won it
:07:23. > :07:27.6-2 in the fifth. Gale Monfils hasn't dropped a set but he's lost
:07:28. > :07:38.all three Fife set matches here at Wimbledon. -- Gael Monfils.
:07:39. > :07:43.UMPIRE: Can I ask you to take your seats, please, thank you. He's's
:07:44. > :07:49.never reached the fourth round here either. Five times to the third
:07:50. > :08:18.round, but no further. Just on the line. We've seen this a
:08:19. > :08:35.lot the serve volley. He has had a lot of success on it.
:08:36. > :08:41.Mannarino has this forehand which he hits so flat, it creeps over the
:08:42. > :09:17.net. Monfils, again, another moment of
:09:18. > :09:54.madness. He was like this similarly in the last set.
:09:55. > :10:08.Brilliant time for an ace, using that slice to good effect. The man
:10:09. > :10:15.in the black T-shirt there, bottom left of your picture, Monfils'
:10:16. > :10:19.coach. Oh, brilliant put away by Mannarino. But Monfils will be
:10:20. > :10:36.kicking himself. There have been moments in this
:10:37. > :10:42.match when Monfils has just checked out. Yeah, it's quite incredible.
:10:43. > :10:47.OK, that was a good point from Mannarino to finish and break point,
:10:48. > :10:51.but the real important times in the match, you know, he's got the
:10:52. > :11:01.opportunity to serve first in this fifth set to get his nose in front.
:11:02. > :11:06.Two or three just inexplicable errors gifting it to Mannarino.
:11:07. > :11:15.Having wrestled the momentum almost gifted it back to his opponent. It's
:11:16. > :11:23.a very hard sport. Lovely body serve there from Mannarino. Hasn't got the
:11:24. > :12:05.hardest serve or the fastest, but it's a very canny serve.
:12:06. > :12:14.Plenty of conviction from this man. It's like a slap that forehand, real
:12:15. > :13:03.whip to it that time. Oh, he had to watch it, didn't he?
:13:04. > :13:10.That was fantastic sprinting to the net by Mannarino. It's woken the
:13:11. > :13:15.crowd up. There's the serve and volley again on the first point from
:13:16. > :13:30.Monfils. That time getting the better of his opponent.
:13:31. > :13:40.Now where has that shot been? It's the most outrageous skill to produce
:13:41. > :14:29.that power from that position. Yeah, that's much more like it.
:14:30. > :14:35.Complete control of the point. Really good movement from Monfils.
:14:36. > :14:55.Got up to this ball. He got his body through it. 12 ace for Monfils.
:14:56. > :15:06.-- Twelfth ace for Monfils. Maddening to watch Monfils, you have
:15:07. > :15:15.a man who seems to just drift out one moment for an hour or so.
:15:16. > :15:19.Straight back in. Hit shots from the middle of the racquet and then look
:15:20. > :15:22.totally uninterested. Its with a nts until really the end of the second
:15:23. > :15:27.set where he produced a couple of big shots and the crowd really got
:15:28. > :15:31.behind him and there was like, OK, thank you, this is what we've come
:15:32. > :15:36.out to see, to support you. Talked about it earlier in the match, it's
:15:37. > :15:45.a different prospect for him than what he had in the second round
:15:46. > :15:51.begins Kyle Edmund. He loves the big stages in the world. That is where
:15:52. > :15:54.he plays his big tennis. He said after his second round victory he
:15:55. > :16:00.doesn't like the grass. He is struggling to cope with the
:16:01. > :16:09.movement, the mentality, saying he's guilty of thinking too much. Well,
:16:10. > :16:16.at the moment, he may not be here next week. He's never been here in
:16:17. > :16:28.the second week of Wimbledon. The 15th see seed in real trouble here
:16:29. > :17:10.on Court 12. His compatriot, Adrian Mannarino 2-1 up.
:17:11. > :17:21.Oh, he's made it! He was out of the point virtually, ten second ago.
:17:22. > :17:28.APPLAUSE Brilliant tennis from both players.
:17:29. > :17:54.This forehand down-the-line, one of Monfils' best in the whole match.
:17:55. > :18:05.Seals the deal that time. Once again, it's pinpoint accuracy from
:18:06. > :18:09.Mannarino's ground strokes. It's not the pace that does the damage, it's
:18:10. > :18:11.accuracy and it's the flight on the ball. Stays very low on this
:18:12. > :18:24.grass-court. Again, Mannarino likes to serve out
:18:25. > :18:31.wide for that first serve, then comes closer for the second.
:18:32. > :18:34.It's just a dreadful shot from Monfils. No commitment to that
:18:35. > :19:07.return, at all. Well, Mannarino is dictating the
:19:08. > :19:17.tempo and the energy here at the moment.
:19:18. > :19:34.A penny for the thoughts of the 15th seed now. Staring down the barrel in
:19:35. > :19:52.this fifth set. What's he got left in the tank? He's
:19:53. > :19:53.never won five sets here at Wimbledon. Does he believe he can
:19:54. > :20:35.win? Hello, that might wake him up! Ever
:20:36. > :20:59.the showman, Gael Monfils. UMPIRE: Game Monfils. Mannarino
:21:00. > :21:05.leads 3-2. We have been talking about this throughout the match,
:21:06. > :21:12.Jamie, he loves a stage, Gael Monfils there might be an element
:21:13. > :21:18.he's out on Court 12, not Centre, not 1, not even Court 2 against a
:21:19. > :21:21.player that probably not many people have heard of and it just doesn't
:21:22. > :21:24.excite him. It doesn't motivate him. Which is extraordinary when be you
:21:25. > :21:30.consider we are here at Wimbledon and there's a fourth round place at
:21:31. > :21:35.stake? It's not exciting enough. It's almost like to come out here,
:21:36. > :21:39.having had the good win in the second round, on the big court, to
:21:40. > :21:44.come out here and win three, four and three without any fuss, not much
:21:45. > :21:48.noise, those are not the kind of days, the kind of occasions that
:21:49. > :21:55.Gael Monfils is playing tennis for it. It did look a bit like that in
:21:56. > :21:58.the start. Now we're in the fifth set, a break down, the court is
:21:59. > :22:02.packed. More noise now and energy in the court.
:22:03. > :22:05.You would expect him now, it's like the difficult parts of his match
:22:06. > :22:09.where it might have been flat are over. It's the fifth set.
:22:10. > :22:13.He knows the cam are and the spotlight are on him. Will he
:22:14. > :22:26.produce his best tennis to get back into this match? -- Cameras.
:22:27. > :23:10.Mannarino has other ideas. World ranking of 51.
:23:11. > :23:14.Very passive from Monfils, but wonderful from Mannarino. He's in
:23:15. > :23:56.total control at the moment. Take that! He is doing all the
:23:57. > :24:06.running in this match, Adrian Mannarino.
:24:07. > :24:40.UMPIRE: Game, Mannarino. Mannarino leads 4-2. Final set.
:24:41. > :24:43.Big moment now for Mannarino. He's reached the fourth round just once
:24:44. > :25:16.before. Well Monfils has just gone missing.
:25:17. > :25:44.He's a shadow of the player seeded 15 here at Wimbledon.
:25:45. > :26:25.APPLAUSE Fantastic point and forehand winner
:26:26. > :26:27.from Monfils there, but does it do enough to cancel out all the loose
:26:28. > :26:43.play? Oh, yeah. We've been saying
:26:44. > :26:46.throughout the match, when he presses forward, when he takes the
:26:47. > :26:57.initiative, Monfils is a different player.
:26:58. > :27:00.He's come back from being down once before in this match, can he do it
:27:01. > :27:34.now? Oh, no. A very, very nervy shot
:27:35. > :27:44.there from Adrian Mannarino. It's totally understandable. He's 4-2 up,
:27:45. > :28:03.in the deciding set, against the 15th seed.
:28:04. > :28:14.UMPIRE: Advantage, Mannarino. Once again, having dug in and made enough
:28:15. > :28:18.balls on that last break point, Monfils a brain cram drop shot at
:28:19. > :28:33.deuce. One more chance for Mannarino.
:28:34. > :28:46.Oh, and he's got the luck as well. It could be a defining break.
:28:47. > :28:49.Mannarino here, on Court 12, he leads 5-2 in the final set against
:28:50. > :29:11.Gael Monfils, the number 15 seed. He can't quite believe it, can he? I
:29:12. > :29:16.think he felt in the middle of this match he had the authority and the
:29:17. > :29:22.control. He was hitting it harder. He was hitting it flatter. There was
:29:23. > :29:27.an injection of energy. But since about the third set, it's just
:29:28. > :29:33.evaporated. The main point is the timing of those lapses. Having
:29:34. > :29:38.somehow managed to get 2-1 lead, at the start of that fourth set, he put
:29:39. > :29:42.in a really cheap game. It looked like Mannarino was starting to
:29:43. > :29:46.physically falter as well. He got a bit of hope. I think, we obviously
:29:47. > :29:51.are talking a lot about Monfils' performance here. I think it's worth
:29:52. > :29:56.highlighting how difficult a player Mannarino is to play on the grass.
:29:57. > :30:02.Not just his game style and the way he makes things difficult for the
:30:03. > :30:06.opponent, but also the fact that he's left-handed and the different
:30:07. > :30:08.angles that presents for Monfils. He's been a very difficult player to
:30:09. > :30:21.play against. Serving for the match. You can't control them. They have a
:30:22. > :31:31.mind of their own. Two pointsway.
:31:32. > :32:19.-- away.
:32:20. > :32:27.That was brilliant from Mannarino. The pace, the angle, the pressure!
:32:28. > :32:38.He has been by far the braver, here on Court 12.
:32:39. > :32:40.Just one more point. And that's what he's thinking. A
:32:41. > :33:02.place for the fourth round awaits. Wow! Nerve-wracking stuff.
:33:03. > :34:09.Monfils is still in it, just. Oh! That is absolutely sublime! He
:34:10. > :34:33.had no right to hit that shot! And once again from Adrian
:34:34. > :35:01.Mannarino, the shot of the week. A second match point.
:35:02. > :35:12.He's done it! Fortune favours the brave.
:35:13. > :35:17.Adrian Mannarino for the second time into the fourth round at Wimbledon
:35:18. > :35:23.after three hours, 31 minutes of pulsating tennis.
:35:24. > :35:28.Gale, the 15th seed is out. Once again, that record, I'm afraid
:35:29. > :35:32.it's come back to haunt him. He fails to go beyond and win in five
:35:33. > :35:35.sets. But the day belongs to this man in your picture. The world
:35:36. > :35:48.number 51, Adrian Mannarino. He must be exhausted. Yet never five
:35:49. > :35:53.setter for Adrian Mannarino. But what entertainment out on the court.
:35:54. > :35:59.The crowd really enjoying that. Super points at the end.
:36:00. > :36:07.This was the player fined $9,000 when he bumped into the ball boy.
:36:08. > :36:13.But guaranteed ?137,000. So he will not mind too much. But Gael Monfils
:36:14. > :36:17.is out of the tournament once again. He has not yet fulfilled his
:36:18. > :36:22.potential at the championships but Adrian Mannarino is back on Monday.
:36:23. > :36:29.A day of rest well earned by Adrian Mannarino.
:36:30. > :36:34.Over on BBC One, we are watching Centre Court, Novak Djokovic in
:36:35. > :36:41.action against Ernests Gulbis. That match is on BBC One.
:36:42. > :36:46.There is Gulbis and there's the crowd and Djokovic. That's on BBC
:36:47. > :36:52.One. We are heading over to court number
:36:53. > :37:00.one. There is a story brewing here as the former world number one,
:37:01. > :37:04.Caroline Wozniacki is a set and a break down to Anett Kontaviet who
:37:05. > :37:08.beat her on the grass last year. So we are dropping in to watch this one
:37:09. > :37:31.with Sam Smith and Chris Bradnam. This is the classic case of the
:37:32. > :37:35.counterpuncher against the player. Kontaviet has all of the answers
:37:36. > :37:47.today. The last five games, it's become very one-sided.
:37:48. > :37:55.Wozniacki can't find the answers. She came in with huge confidence.
:37:56. > :38:01.Winning 37 matches, qualifying in ITFs.
:38:02. > :38:10.Winner in Rome. Winner in Stuttgart.
:38:11. > :38:46.This is a must-win service game, Sam.
:38:47. > :38:54.Mentally out here, Wozniacki is the far superior of the two. But she
:38:55. > :39:05.can't get this into a street fight, not at the moment.
:39:06. > :39:19.The crowd are trying hard for this popular player, as she gets on the
:39:20. > :39:23.scoreboard again. Just to repeat what we were saying
:39:24. > :39:28.earlier, Sam, she cannot have her father come and have a chat to her
:39:29. > :39:34.right now about how to solve this power conundrum. She's got to work
:39:35. > :39:38.it out for herself. We haven't seen her doing much different. She's
:39:39. > :39:42.battling away, or Kontaviet is going to get tight and open the door for
:39:43. > :39:46.her. She is an outstanding match player.
:39:47. > :39:52.If you look in terms of statistics on tour, the player that saves most
:39:53. > :39:54.of the break points and converts most break points, usually, Caroline
:39:55. > :40:00.Wozniacki is at the top of that list. She is a player that works
:40:01. > :40:05.things out. She has options here. I would like to see her use flight.
:40:06. > :40:10.She's got to hold her ground on the baseline. The ball is coming at her,
:40:11. > :40:15.it is big, heavy, listen to the sound of it, you know it's hard. Or
:40:16. > :40:26.she could take it along the deck with that little backhand.
:40:27. > :40:34.So, after just 47 minutes, Kontaviet, the boss, in this
:40:35. > :40:55.remaining third round, the only one left as a set and 2-1.
:40:56. > :41:08.A very famous man back in the states, David Lee. The San Antonio
:41:09. > :41:14.basketball player. He is also pretty tall. But pretty
:41:15. > :42:17.much anonymous here wandering around at Wimbledon!
:42:18. > :42:28.That's a switcher. Well, she always loved watching
:42:29. > :42:34.Martina Hingis play when she was growing up. Thinking about how she
:42:35. > :42:52.worked out her matches on court, and didn't need any help.
:42:53. > :43:06.Well, got a little lucky. It's another one of those, got to
:43:07. > :43:12.hold serve, here games. The problem has been behind the second serve for
:43:13. > :43:16.Wozniacki. Four from 15, Kontaviet, she's hammered it.
:43:17. > :43:33.Getting just over 55% of first serves in.
:43:34. > :43:42.First time she's ever won main draw matches here at Wimbledon,
:43:43. > :43:48.Kontaviet. This first round. The last three years in 14, qualified
:43:49. > :44:29.and won the first round. So this is a huge breakthrough.
:44:30. > :44:36.She's keep pushing, Caroline. It's a little exasperating the way she's
:44:37. > :44:45.playing. But she loves competing. This is what she wants to do.
:44:46. > :44:57.Sleaze just going to keep working away, trying to stay close.
:44:58. > :45:02.-- she's. I sense she knows there are enough
:45:03. > :45:18.errors in the Kontaviet game to make the second set very interesting.
:45:19. > :45:28.Importantly, it's that close on that scoreboard.
:45:29. > :45:36.Such a steady rise up the rankings for Kontaviet, Sam, hasn't it? It's
:45:37. > :45:42.always a good thing. You tend to stay there. She won the title before
:45:43. > :45:47.coming here. Beating Wozniacki on a grass court last year in her only
:45:48. > :45:52.previous meeting in Nottingham. She has huge self-belief.
:45:53. > :45:55.She was a very good junior. Winning the Volvo championships, and the
:45:56. > :46:00.junior slam. It is the perfect launch pad to go into the pros. I
:46:01. > :46:08.think I remember seeing her the first time at a $10,000 event in
:46:09. > :46:19.Edinburgh. It was a pretty awful day. I saw this figure practicing on
:46:20. > :46:23.an outside court. I wondered who it was. I didn't know, didn't check,
:46:24. > :46:37.then later I saw it out on the match court. That already was a sign that
:46:38. > :46:42.is someone that really wanted it. Glenn Sharpe is her coach. He has
:46:43. > :46:46.done a terrific job. Sometimes it's tough love in the communication. But
:46:47. > :46:50.what a player, though. This is a serious threat against the
:46:51. > :47:23.world number two. These are a seven mile an hour
:47:24. > :47:26.difference. And that is Kontaviet hitting the ball harder than average
:47:27. > :47:56.than Novak Djokovic! Well she can take pace off when she
:47:57. > :48:01.needs to as well. A real thinker on the court.
:48:02. > :48:18.The ball isn't totally flat on it, she's got some cover on it as well.
:48:19. > :48:25.By cover, I mean she's prepared to hit the back of the ball and play
:48:26. > :48:37.with some spin to give her some margin. Super.
:48:38. > :48:41.Hasn't blinked yet and why would she, she's beaten the world number
:48:42. > :48:50.one and the world number six this year. I know this is Wimbledon but
:48:51. > :48:51.she's been a fourth round two years ago, qualified against Venus
:48:52. > :49:27.Williams, she likes the big stage. Four from 17 now on the second
:49:28. > :49:32.serve. That second serve is just getting
:49:33. > :49:36.munched, isn't it. So noticeable with Kontaviet. Eve no-one the
:49:37. > :49:39.knock-out. Respect out here but great intent had she can come out
:49:40. > :49:50.and blow Caroline out of the court. The difference a first serve makes.
:49:51. > :51:16.Most of them in that game. Plenty more coming back into this
:51:17. > :51:22.new-look Court One. Kontaviet has played pretty much the perfect
:51:23. > :51:33.match, hasn't she Sam. She's got 60% first serves in. Would like a little
:51:34. > :51:36.more than that. Over a quarter of first serves and tough enough for
:51:37. > :51:42.Wozniacki to crack that nut. Let's see if you can have a go at it
:51:43. > :51:47.to see if she can chase it down. She just feels she a close enough
:51:48. > :51:53.here. She has kept it to the one break. Done well. The percentage is
:51:54. > :52:00.up 20% from the opening set that gives her a fighting chance. What
:52:01. > :52:03.she's looking for is what Sharapova says "a little door" to open. That's
:52:04. > :52:19.all she needs. She's close enough. Sometimes Wozniacki must think to
:52:20. > :52:24.herself "why can't these up and comers hit the ball sole?" New balls
:52:25. > :53:51.in play. I would say that I trust the
:53:52. > :53:56.forehand more than I trust the backhand of Kontaviet. It will be
:53:57. > :54:17.interesting to see in the clutch where Wozniacki directs traffic.
:54:18. > :54:20.Eit. It will be interesting to see in the clutch where Wozniacki
:54:21. > :54:24.directs traffic. Must have held her breath for a
:54:25. > :54:29.second. But she was up to the task.
:54:30. > :54:49.Oh, dear, good job she made that volley.
:54:50. > :55:03.Outstanding. An hour and a minute and she's away.
:55:04. > :55:37.One game away from the fourth round at Wimbledon.
:55:38. > :55:46.I was amazed in that last game Wozniacki hit to the forehand. I
:55:47. > :55:49.don't think she's really figured out, it was a pretty long time ago
:55:50. > :56:34.that they played. I'm very surprised at this.
:56:35. > :56:44.Whenever she misses like that, there's not much of a reaction. His
:56:45. > :56:46.eyes narrow, Glenn Sharpe but I don't think she judges herself, she
:56:47. > :57:00.just improves herself. And now to ask the serve it out
:57:01. > :57:14.question. It is a big question, Sam. She
:57:15. > :57:19.played a brilliant service game in her last service game.
:57:20. > :57:26.Yes, I think it slightly worries, me, though, when she has been 4-2 up
:57:27. > :57:33.and 5-3 up, Wozniacki has been able to get through the games quickly. I
:57:34. > :57:40.was vetting on court yesterday, watching Venus Williams, sitting
:57:41. > :57:43.next to a former Wimbledon champion, Anne Jones, chatting about one thing
:57:44. > :57:49.or another. She said that tennis match is all about pressure. It's
:57:50. > :57:54.about when you apply it. For me, in this, we were chatting about the
:57:55. > :57:59.Watson, Azarenka battle, a feeling that Watson lost the match at start
:58:00. > :58:04.of the second match because she didn't apply pressure coming from
:58:05. > :58:08.the third set, I would say at 4-2, Kontaveit did not apply pressure.
:58:09. > :58:12.She almost allowed Wozniacki to get through quickly. Wozniacki is coming
:58:13. > :58:15.off a love service game now, I think it will be hard to serve out as
:58:16. > :58:28.she's not applied the pressure. Red-faced for two reasons,
:58:29. > :00:05.gentlemen. She got it! Four poise in a row.
:00:06. > :01:24.Wozniacki is back in the second set. What a smart game from the former
:01:25. > :01:31.World Number 1 who used to win 60, 70 matches a year for fun in 2010,
:01:32. > :02:37.20 11. Now watch Wozniacki applied pressure right here.
:02:38. > :02:45.Two very positive points. It is great to see Kontaveit looking to be
:02:46. > :03:15.so proactive, but she is taking some big risks, playing for lines.
:03:16. > :03:32.Oh! It takes your breath away. They make them tough in Estonia, this is
:03:33. > :03:46.a great reset from Kontaveit. Three more break points.
:03:47. > :03:56.Caroline loves the situation. This is what she plays for, out and out
:03:57. > :03:59.competitor. She doesn't fear the lower ranked players, she doesn't
:04:00. > :04:42.fear anyone, she just gets on with what she knows she has to do.
:04:43. > :04:50.In the last 15 minutes, there have been so many errors from this
:04:51. > :04:51.backhand of Kontaveit. You can't show too much weakness against a
:04:52. > :05:16.former World Number 1. Fabulous! She will serve for the
:05:17. > :06:28.match again. She has got another chance. She
:06:29. > :06:32.trusts herself, doesn't she? And the fact she doesn't judge herself when
:06:33. > :06:38.she makes errors. Heather Watson yesterday when her forehand was
:06:39. > :06:41.letting her down and is today it is Kontaveit's backhand, but you felt
:06:42. > :06:46.Heather was being tough on herself with the errors. You don't get that
:06:47. > :06:50.with Kontaveit. I think it is different mentalities and styles,
:06:51. > :06:55.making mistakes is part of their game. They have to do that because
:06:56. > :07:01.they go for big shots. If you are a safer and more reactive player like
:07:02. > :07:08.Wozniacki and Heather Watson, and J Lane Jankovic, a lot of
:07:09. > :07:10.counterpunches out there, they really don't tolerate missing --
:07:11. > :07:27.Jelena Jankovic. It hurts them so much.
:07:28. > :09:35.Second time Kontaveit serves for the match.
:09:36. > :09:42.In the opening set, Caroline was losing a lot of the shorter points,
:09:43. > :10:04.now she is winning the majority of them. That is a big turnaround.
:10:05. > :10:08.Three breaks of serve in a row, she never knows when she is beaten,
:10:09. > :10:20.Wozniacki. She did look a little tight in that
:10:21. > :10:22.game, Kontaveit. Just fantastic resistance from this woman. To force
:10:23. > :11:03.the tie-break. She played a tie-break in Nottingham
:11:04. > :11:08.last year on the grass, in their previous meeting. Kontaveit the
:11:09. > :11:56.winner of that match, but she lost the tie-break in the opening set.
:11:57. > :12:03.Well, she has got to back herself all the way now, hasn't she? It
:12:04. > :12:05.sounds easy to say, very difficult to do and there can't be a moment of
:12:06. > :13:18.doubt out here. She has not taken those out of the
:13:19. > :13:28.air, back row one, she allows Wozniacki to defend, at our peril. I
:13:29. > :13:32.believe Caroline has the street fight she was looking for! She has
:13:33. > :13:39.been behind in the scoreline don't forget this entire match. And she is
:13:40. > :13:41.still behind in the scoreline, until she manages to level if she can
:13:42. > :16:06.level up this second set. Getting a reaction from the box. Ten
:16:07. > :16:21.minutes ago, this woman was two points from winning the match. It is
:16:22. > :16:25.now one set all. Your thoughts? Well, how many years have we set
:16:26. > :16:34.here and watched Caroline Wozniacki do what we have just seen? She just
:16:35. > :16:39.about kept Kontaveit in range. She was getting pummelled all over the
:16:40. > :16:43.place, but there is a lot to be said for hanging in. That is her
:16:44. > :16:47.mentality. That is the environment she has been brought up in, a very
:16:48. > :16:55.sporting and competitive home life, in a very healthy way. And she does
:16:56. > :17:02.it not just for a couple of matches, she does it for every single match
:17:03. > :17:06.and practice session. More serves in for the first serve, that was the
:17:07. > :17:09.big difference for Caroline Wozniacki, just protected the second
:17:10. > :17:13.serve, although she did take a hammering, but she did not have to
:17:14. > :17:18.play as many second serves. It was a more proactive set in many ways, I'm
:17:19. > :17:23.surprised it was five winners. With numbers like that, how on Earth did
:17:24. > :17:30.Kontaveit lose that second serve? Look at the breaks won. A World
:17:31. > :17:34.Number 1, two time grand slam final is coming you don't get many
:17:35. > :17:38.chances. She makes you self-doubt because her defence is very good, do
:17:39. > :17:44.we need to see anything technically different from the Estonian to win
:17:45. > :17:47.this match now? She has a big problem now, when that ball is
:17:48. > :17:51.floating in the air, she has the transition and finish the point. She
:17:52. > :17:57.has been a little guilty of restarting a point from the back of
:17:58. > :18:10.the court. Still smiling, Glenn Schaap. Or is he squinting?
:18:11. > :18:11.Kontaveit, this is a pretty important service game at the start
:18:12. > :19:04.of set three. It is good footwork to release the
:19:05. > :19:30.forehand. Just looking down at this young
:19:31. > :19:34.Estonian now, you say what the she have to do? I don't believe she
:19:35. > :19:37.knows what she is going to do out here and the fact the forehand is
:19:38. > :19:44.starting to miss which has brought her so much success is a big worry
:19:45. > :19:52.if you are a Kontaveit fan. Wozniacki is clocking all of this.
:19:53. > :19:55.Having not got the win in two sets and is now up against it at the
:19:56. > :19:59.start of the third. It was interesting in the tie-break
:20:00. > :20:03.Wozniacki hits second service Commission was not looking to run
:20:04. > :20:07.round and unleash the forehand, like it almost got a little too big for
:20:08. > :20:11.her at that time. Something for him to ponder over in the development of
:20:12. > :20:18.this young future star. Yes, you will note that yes, she has beaten
:20:19. > :20:23.Angelique Kerber this year, but that was a tour event. Beating a top
:20:24. > :20:46.player in a grand slam is a different ball game.
:20:47. > :20:53.The applying now for the big prizes, Caroline Wozniacki. She has achieved
:20:54. > :20:57.the goal, it wasn't to win slams originally, it was to be World
:20:58. > :21:01.Number 1. She has had a number of injuries these last few years so I
:21:02. > :21:09.think she feels like she is playing on borrowed time. Stayed down on
:21:10. > :21:11.that beautifully. It is a wonderful one for the photographers. Look at
:21:12. > :21:38.this. Look at Wozniacki controlling the
:21:39. > :21:43.tempo now of this match. Playing a little quicker between points. The
:21:44. > :21:58.top players, they know all the tricks of the trade!
:21:59. > :22:19.This is how good it is going to have to beat to win points against
:22:20. > :23:09.Wozniacki, the dynamic of this match has completely changed.
:23:10. > :23:17.Well, Kontaveit now has to do a Wozniacki in this set and stay tight
:23:18. > :23:23.on the scoreboard. This is a must win service game. For Wozniacki the
:23:24. > :23:26.go-ahead, with all her experience, that is a tall mountain. Dashed to
:23:27. > :24:29.go ahead. Kontaveit, over the last hour and a
:24:30. > :24:33.half, has begun to realise what an believable the solid base game
:24:34. > :24:48.Wozniacki has and what she brings to the court, very tough to break down.
:24:49. > :24:55.Superb! So quick. So determined. Her basic flat speed is nothing
:24:56. > :24:59.exceptional. But there is a hunger and a desire to move. She loves the
:25:00. > :25:56.physical part of the game and she sees everything so early.
:25:57. > :26:03.Just occasionally on that backhand, when Kontaveit is very stressed, her
:26:04. > :26:10.racket gets very close to the body and she almost has to fight the
:26:11. > :26:15.ball. Look at the wake Caroline plays, how beautifully positioned
:26:16. > :26:16.she is in relation to her body when she strikes the backhand. She really
:26:17. > :26:41.keeps her hands away from her. She got away with it. Back on the
:26:42. > :27:53.scoreboard. That is a big hold. It gives her a
:27:54. > :28:02.chance. Yes, like a Wozniacki in the opening set and the second, just
:28:03. > :28:07.keeping it to one break. Super shots, it just shows you how
:28:08. > :28:13.physical this sport is, the demands it makes new. Point after point
:28:14. > :28:19.after point. Very tough again today. Mental strength is going to make a
:28:20. > :28:24.difference, it always does. And certainly, for the winner of this
:28:25. > :28:26.title, which is so open, who wants to be the favourite? Not many hands
:28:27. > :29:03.go up. New balls in play for Wozniacki.
:29:04. > :29:30.Serving with the break. 2-1, final set. One hour and 35 minutes played.
:29:31. > :29:52.That was a wonderful pick-up. It is a huge return. So much easy power.
:29:53. > :29:59.Instance challenge. It bodes well normally. It was swinging away,
:30:00. > :30:09.wasn't it? What a great call from the line
:30:10. > :30:56.judge! No fist pump, look at that. Wozniacki has two challenges
:30:57. > :31:45.remaining. Still a lot of pressure on the
:31:46. > :31:49.Wozniacki second serve. It went up by 20%. It needs to stay high in the
:31:50. > :32:17.decider. To do it. Too strong. Break point.
:32:18. > :32:46.Back of his seat has been unemployed for quite a time.
:32:47. > :32:53.When I watch Caroline, you do not get this level of mental toughness
:32:54. > :32:56.overnight. This has been schooled since June your days. The
:32:57. > :33:02.competitive environment she grew up in with two sportspeople in Mum and
:33:03. > :33:15.dad is a big factor, but she has done this from day one engineers.
:33:16. > :33:25.Junior champion here 11 years ago. She was a couple of match point down
:33:26. > :33:31.in the semifinal to Radwanska's little sister. She is tough. It has
:33:32. > :33:41.taken a lot of training backed up with superb physical condition. In
:33:42. > :33:51.the same quarter as Rob balaclava as a senior.
:33:52. > :35:49.Another many battle won by the Dean save the break point.
:35:50. > :36:00.Again, another one of those shot back points of less than four shots.
:36:01. > :36:03.She was not winning those in the first and it has changed in the
:36:04. > :36:15.second and that is one of the reasons that she is in front.
:36:16. > :36:24.Hesitated. You know she is going to win the longer points because by the
:36:25. > :36:29.lover stomach averages it is harder and harder to hit against her.
:36:30. > :36:44.Insurance points. Caroline Wozniacki is the boss of
:36:45. > :37:04.the third round. It has taken an hour and 43 minutes
:37:05. > :37:11.but there is breathing space. Gritting her teeth. Making her
:37:12. > :37:15.opponent self-doubt as only she can. A great counterpuncher who has added
:37:16. > :37:22.a bit of aggression. Look at what this means. So much to admire. It
:37:23. > :37:28.would be a shame it was the act he hangs up a racket without a Grand
:37:29. > :37:35.Slam title. An ambassador on and off the court. All of these top players
:37:36. > :37:44.who have got pretty close, they are all scrabbling as fast as they can
:37:45. > :37:49.be Serena comes back. Saying, we better get a move on. It is
:37:50. > :37:51.stressing them all out. She was 5-3 down in the second set and has only
:37:52. > :38:15.lost two games. After an hour and three quarters,
:38:16. > :38:32.Wozniacki 4-1, double break, final set.
:38:33. > :38:42.Such a smart play in terms of pattern from Bosnia Aki. You get the
:38:43. > :39:13.return down the line, straight onto the open play. I love her patterns.
:39:14. > :39:25.That is maybe why she does not go in much. If she loses, and it looks
:39:26. > :39:30.like she will, then this is the learning window, isn't it? That she
:39:31. > :39:32.is going to have a transition game because these big ground shots will
:39:33. > :40:55.take her foreword. That is terribly polite, isn't it?
:40:56. > :41:25.Yes. That is just a mental error. Just
:41:26. > :41:30.not able to sustain the intensity and the intent that she began this
:41:31. > :41:53.match with. That seems a very long time ago.
:41:54. > :42:07.Around 40 minutes ago, Kontaveit was a set and 5-4, 30-0, two points from
:42:08. > :43:44.the next round. She is serving to stay in the match.
:43:45. > :43:50.I feel this young lady has just realised how hard it is to try to
:43:51. > :43:58.hit through and pass Caroline Wozniacki and the lot of the pace
:43:59. > :44:02.has gone out of her ground strokes and is the first set. If you're
:44:03. > :44:06.going to pass Caroline you have to do it in two sets and you have to
:44:07. > :44:09.keep up the average speed. Good preparation against Wozniacki is
:44:10. > :44:29.hitting on a wall for three hours. You just saw there, you just felt
:44:30. > :44:35.sometimes contemplate when Wozniacki was 40-0 did not compete that well
:44:36. > :44:39.and almost felt the game had gone. With Wozniacki it is just reset, it
:44:40. > :45:10.does not matter the score, she will try to drag every game back.
:45:11. > :45:16.Looking to get the job done right here. She never lets you brave. That
:45:17. > :45:45.is what all the top players do. What have I got to do? Please with
:45:46. > :47:20.very little emotion, Caroline, it is all business.
:47:21. > :47:30.Every time she is playing a point, after it Kontaveit is causing
:47:31. > :47:45.high-rise. This is a very late tactical change-up. Yes.
:47:46. > :47:59.Match point saved. Contemplate's turned to hang in this third round.
:48:00. > :48:05.A while ago, you said, let's see how Kontaveit finishes. Your thoughts? I
:48:06. > :48:10.think she did very well to hang in there. She is learning the
:48:11. > :48:16.difference mentally between she is at 38 in the world and with the top
:48:17. > :48:19.ten player, that is why Wozniacki is back in the top ten now the injuries
:48:20. > :48:25.and out of the way and she has her team sorted out and she has done a
:48:26. > :48:29.lot of work on her forehand. Caroline has been very smart. She
:48:30. > :48:34.has talked a lot about time in the gym. Not as many hours on the
:48:35. > :48:38.practice good because she is very aware she has to manage her body
:48:39. > :48:44.because her body has been through a lot more than maybe an out and out
:48:45. > :48:53.striker. She has run over 2000 metres and thus match. So many of
:48:54. > :49:06.those are short sharks prints. She is warming up. No smiles yet from
:49:07. > :49:12.Team Wozniacki. They might be just a couple of minutes away. For the
:49:13. > :49:13.first time, Wozniacki serving for the match after an hour and 55
:49:14. > :50:07.minutes. This court is really getting baked
:50:08. > :50:10.and hardening up. At the start of the Championships it was maybe a bit
:50:11. > :50:16.harder than previous years because of the heat with three heatwave we
:50:17. > :50:18.had in mid June. Caroline struggles off of her forehand side to generate
:50:19. > :50:33.much of her own. That was a little sloppy from
:50:34. > :50:36.Wozniacki. You would imagine she would target the backhand to close
:50:37. > :50:57.out this match. Which has been the more unreliable author is Tony on.
:50:58. > :51:33.Close. Challenged. Match point or break point. The ball was called
:51:34. > :51:45.out. Kontaveit as two challenges
:51:46. > :53:35.remaining. Match point Wozniacki. Kontaveit... That is why clothing is
:53:36. > :53:40.so tough. Kontaveit can hit lots of shots to nothing because she is not
:53:41. > :53:53.under any pressure, not the sort of pleasure she was under when she was
:53:54. > :53:56.a set and 5-3. Look out. -- look how intense Caroline is getting. With
:53:57. > :54:12.every match point that comes and goes it is going to get harder.
:54:13. > :54:32.It is challenged. The reaction from Wozniacki, she felt she has made
:54:33. > :54:39.this. Not sure. She has won it. These mile at last. Just over two
:54:40. > :54:45.hours. Eight case of what might have been for the 21-year-old. For a
:54:46. > :54:52.Caroline Wozniacki, she never knows when she is beaten. What the
:54:53. > :54:56.fantastic win. She has given herself a six chance to join the last eight
:54:57. > :55:03.club at Wimbledon. She is through to the second week at Wimbledon. When
:55:04. > :55:07.you look at the last 16, she is one of the most mentally tough players
:55:08. > :55:10.out there and one of the great competitors left in the
:55:11. > :55:17.Championships. Contemplate learned a valuable lessons. She fancied her
:55:18. > :55:22.chances. She was not good enough and did not apply the pressure when she
:55:23. > :55:28.had the opportunity and if you do not do that against the best players
:55:29. > :55:33.in the world you end up paying for it. You will end up hearing a lot
:55:34. > :55:47.more from Kontaveit. Remember the name. If you look at the last 16
:55:48. > :55:58.line-up, considering the upsets we have had, the wonderful matches,
:55:59. > :56:05.three and CD players, Rob Burrow call -- Rybarikova. The form book
:56:06. > :56:13.has not been too bad. Wozniacki plays another good hitter. Good
:56:14. > :56:18.practice for that. Look at the faces. That young lad. I have got
:56:19. > :56:29.Caroline's autograph. Can I have one? She is fantastic for the game.
:56:30. > :56:34.You mentioned the number one spot. She finished 2010 and 2011 at number
:56:35. > :56:39.one. About a Grand Slam. She got some criticism for that. She has
:56:40. > :56:49.supported women's tennis through and through. I do not think... People
:56:50. > :56:53.would not be disappointed if Wozniacki won Wimbledon this year.
:56:54. > :56:58.What would happen back in Denmark? She has had her ups and downs with
:56:59. > :57:02.injuries and she lost some form a few years ago but she is so good at
:57:03. > :57:08.bouncing back and tiny in there and believe they have come right in the
:57:09. > :57:15.end. As a young player that is what you want to follow. That is an
:57:16. > :57:23.example. A comeback win two points from defeat. She is with Phil Jones.
:57:24. > :57:31.Congratulations. How did you manage to turn that around? I have no idea.
:57:32. > :57:37.She was playing really well. I wasn't playing my best tennis. I was
:57:38. > :57:43.trying. It wasn't going my way. I could not get many serves in. I did
:57:44. > :57:47.not feel myself. I felt I had to keep digging deep and she started to
:57:48. > :57:53.get nervous towards the end of the second set and I went for it. I had
:57:54. > :57:59.nothing to lose. I got lucky. In the third set I played really well. What
:58:00. > :58:04.is going through your mind at the end of the second set? You have to
:58:05. > :58:11.get the returns deep. That is all I was thinking. Do not let anything
:58:12. > :58:16.pass you. I was lucky to get that one. Into the fourth round for a
:58:17. > :58:23.sixth time. You want to join the last eight club desperately. Your
:58:24. > :58:26.thoughts? Yes. It is really strange. I love playing on grass and I have
:58:27. > :58:33.not managed to get past the fourth round many times. Hopefully this
:58:34. > :58:38.year. A great warm up for your next match against a big hitter, it will
:58:39. > :58:41.stand you in good stead. It is going to be difficult but I am happy to
:58:42. > :58:47.have escape this one. Looking forward to the next one. The door is
:58:48. > :58:53.open. You know what it is like to reach a Grand Slam final. Will that
:58:54. > :58:58.give you an edge? I think of the next match, one match at the time,
:58:59. > :59:03.not too far ahead. I have been playing great tennis but I have to
:59:04. > :59:10.say in the moment. You have been on a great role, keep it going. Thank
:59:11. > :59:15.you. She will be delighted to keep herself out of trouble, two points
:59:16. > :59:18.away from going out of the Championships, but champions managed
:59:19. > :59:25.to raise their game and she did that at the end of the second set and
:59:26. > :59:31.took control in the third set. 6-2. A big smile, she is desperate to get
:59:32. > :59:38.to the quarterfinals. She watched it as a kid and she wants to go into
:59:39. > :59:52.the tournament further next week. On Centre Court, this match on BBC One,
:59:53. > :59:59.2-0 and Novak Djokovic had a break point but he is serving to stay in
:00:00. > :00:04.the set. On BBC Two we are going to drop in on court three. He was the
:00:05. > :00:09.man of the moment last year. Marcus Willis battled his way through
:00:10. > :00:15.qualifying and then played Fiddler on Centre Court. His fairy tale came
:00:16. > :00:22.through. -- Roger Federer. Up against the number two seeds. They
:00:23. > :00:24.lost the first set but they have raised through the second set. Let
:00:25. > :00:43.us join our commentators. Court number three, the defending
:00:44. > :00:47.champions, Herbert and Mahut, cruising in the first set and then
:00:48. > :00:53.they had a fright, the British wildcards, Willis and Clarke, 6-1,
:00:54. > :01:02.winning the second set and we are tied at one set all. Serving the new
:01:03. > :01:07.balls. They have been very impressive, to come back from the
:01:08. > :01:20.first set when the French pair were far better.
:01:21. > :01:28.Yes, they showed a lot of character in the second set to snatch that
:01:29. > :01:32.6-1, but there was good energy from Clarke and Willis, they have been
:01:33. > :01:36.bounding around gleefully, having the time of their lives, lovely way
:01:37. > :01:46.to spend a Saturday early evening. No better place.
:01:47. > :01:56.One year ago, Marcus was playing Roger Federer on Centre Court. He
:01:57. > :02:03.thought his chance might have gone. He lost to Marchenko in qualifying,
:02:04. > :02:07.the final round, as well. And in the doubles, five set winners in the
:02:08. > :02:14.first round and doing well, here. Catching the line. They have had a
:02:15. > :02:20.lot of things going their way but you make your own mark. Yes, moments
:02:21. > :02:25.of brilliance and inspiration from the British pair, both standing back
:02:26. > :02:28.respectfully on the serve of Mahut but the French men have been below
:02:29. > :02:50.par at times and the British pair have taken advantage.
:02:51. > :02:58.As you can hear, from the noise of the crowd in attendance, four times
:02:59. > :03:01.as many as at the start, this is one of three matches today that did not
:03:02. > :03:07.have any court assignment to begin with. And they put them on the show
:03:08. > :03:17.court at six o'clock on a Saturday evening.
:03:18. > :03:32.The defending champions on the board again in the third set.
:03:33. > :03:38.What has been interesting, we were saying that throughout the
:03:39. > :03:44.tournament, Clarke and Willis hitting 23 aces, Mahut and Herbert,
:03:45. > :03:48.just nine. An interesting point, the French taking the speed of Mack the
:03:49. > :03:54.serve to dictate the first set thereafter, normally the volley and
:03:55. > :03:58.the British pair are really cracking down, six aces, opposed to their
:03:59. > :04:04.opponents with only two. Very dictatorial off the serve.
:04:05. > :04:10.Encouraging for the partisan crowd, who are understandably getting right
:04:11. > :04:16.behind them. We have had a fault and a correction. And the challenge.
:04:17. > :04:39.Yes, understandably. That was a bit long. Let us have a look. Come on!
:04:40. > :04:45.They will take it! Even reverse the Hawk might have struggled to see
:04:46. > :04:46.that that one was in. Hawk-Eye was not named after ruthless, but that
:04:47. > :05:12.is a nice touch. -- ruthless. I think Clarke, Lewis was frozen in
:05:13. > :05:19.disbelief at his partner had missed that volley but he could not see
:05:20. > :05:23.beyond the Frenchman in his way. He was obscured as well, having a
:05:24. > :05:29.little nap? Stay awake! Support your boys! This is not a typical Saturday
:05:30. > :05:42.afternoon weather. Says the Scotsman! Factor 400!
:05:43. > :05:47.This is a big moment in the match for Clarke and Willis, they had
:05:48. > :05:58.momentum after winning the second set 6-1. The French are plenty of
:05:59. > :06:00.support in attendance as well. That is the box for Mahut, just behind
:06:01. > :06:31.the Blitz. -- the British pair. Willis has always had that type of
:06:32. > :06:37.skill and that was sublime, solos with his hands, look at that, that
:06:38. > :06:51.takes a lot of self trust. -- so loose with his hands. He has done it
:06:52. > :06:55.again. We mentioned he is very much, I asked what the secret was to
:06:56. > :07:00.having that touch at the net and he said his legs. Yes, you must pick
:07:01. > :07:04.the right sort of ball, if it is coming to very fast it is very
:07:05. > :07:15.difficult to hit the drop volley off map. The signal behind the back from
:07:16. > :07:21.Marcus. Big point for the defending champions. That was an untimely
:07:22. > :07:29.double fault from Clarke, hopefully he can redeem himself landing the
:07:30. > :07:30.first served. The French team with a break point opportunity early in
:07:31. > :07:54.this third set. He has been rock solid at the net.
:07:55. > :08:00.Winning three points from their in this game alone. Very few empty
:08:01. > :08:03.seats and there are a lot of people waiting to get in outside. This will
:08:04. > :08:31.probably be filled up very shortly. That point was set up by a fabulous
:08:32. > :08:35.return of serve by Nicolas Mahut. It really was and the log from Willis
:08:36. > :08:39.was good but this man is so sprightly to get over his backhand
:08:40. > :08:40.side and turn that into the forehand smash quickly. The second
:08:41. > :08:51.opportunity for the French. That is a good call, to say to
:08:52. > :09:12.Marcus, leave it. That is a family of Clarke. Not bad,
:09:13. > :09:20.what are you doing today? I am going to see Jay, playing at Wimbledon.
:09:21. > :09:31.Nice! Then you get them coming out of the woodwork. Maybe a couple,
:09:32. > :09:35.perhaps for your granny. It is every player's... If you can play at
:09:36. > :09:39.Wimbledon... It keeps all of your friends quite. Exactly the same!
:09:40. > :09:58.They have done it again! The umpire says they made the return
:09:59. > :10:19.but they are disputing that. That was a stern look from the
:10:20. > :10:29.umpire in the chair, first served. -- first serve.
:10:30. > :10:39.What about Jade Clarke by Derek? Smiling. It makes it so much more
:10:40. > :10:44.entertaining when you are the boys watching are thoroughly enjoying it.
:10:45. > :10:49.It is there to see some humour and emotion, isn't it? Another tennis we
:10:50. > :10:57.see sometimes is a little bit expressionless. -- some of the
:10:58. > :11:04.tennis we see. Well played by Marcus. He had to be careful when he
:11:05. > :11:12.slept that he did not touch the net, which he did not. Saving two break
:11:13. > :11:20.points. Deadlock on the scoreboard and there is a lot of energy around
:11:21. > :11:25.the British camp right now. Really closing down then it quickly,
:11:26. > :11:31.Willis, just that little stumble afterwards but the ball was dead and
:11:32. > :11:40.buried. There was an issue. -- there was no issue. If, for any reason,
:11:41. > :11:44.the ball had not gone over, bounced on the other side of the net, that
:11:45. > :11:48.would be a requirement for the eagle eye umpire to see what came first,
:11:49. > :11:55.touching the net or the ball dropping onto the net.
:11:56. > :12:15.We have had a lot of talk this week about the court and the weather and
:12:16. > :12:20.the dryness of the court as well. We have had a look, what do you think?
:12:21. > :12:24.The courts are looking good. I think there has been a little bit of
:12:25. > :12:28.complaint from the players but not much, just because they are dry but
:12:29. > :12:33.they are playing very well. I think there is a lot of residue, dust and
:12:34. > :12:39.loose grass and the end of the play of the day but they have this
:12:40. > :12:44.massive vacuum cleaner that can claim all of the court. Part of the
:12:45. > :12:50.ritual at the end of play. -- they can clean up all of the court. Even
:12:51. > :12:54.if it gets dusty around the baseline, the vacuum cleaners will
:12:55. > :13:07.pick all of that up. And they are playing very fast as well. That is
:13:08. > :13:09.like a wicket, where he is standing. The courts also get watered every
:13:10. > :13:27.night as well. They are on service. Beautiful look, shall court number
:13:28. > :13:34.three, and beyond, in the distance, Court Number Two. As we have the
:13:35. > :13:40.players balcony, and just inside, the restaurant, they often spill
:13:41. > :13:46.over the top to enjoy some of the play. Formerly the graveyard court,
:13:47. > :13:51.Court Number Two. These traditional ears would love this to be the
:13:52. > :13:54.graveyard court was taking on the second seeds, the defending
:13:55. > :14:01.champions with this French pair. Great effort so far. We have lost a
:14:02. > :14:16.number of seeds already, the Bryan brothers are out. Jamie Murray
:14:17. > :14:22.losing against Bruno Suarez, cell... And the 15th seeds are also gone. In
:14:23. > :14:26.the same have, at the foot of the draw. And right at the foot of
:14:27. > :14:32.Wimbledon, if you have not been here, you do not realise the climb
:14:33. > :14:38.that is required to get to court number 18, were in the depths, at
:14:39. > :14:44.the bottom of Church Road. He mentioned earlier a lot of people
:14:45. > :14:48.waiting outside to get in some is a little delay. Here you go, take your
:14:49. > :15:04.time. Job done. And we will get under way again.
:15:05. > :15:13.It is a pretty steep climb from here to Murray Mount or Henman Hill. Yes,
:15:14. > :15:17.and often it can take a while because of the hustle and bustle,
:15:18. > :15:31.you have to go weaving around three different people. Dominic Thiem and
:15:32. > :15:40.Donaldson getting under way, but Djokovic and Gulbis also playing on
:15:41. > :15:48.Centre Court. That is a good serve, from Marcus. Djokovic delighted, his
:15:49. > :15:53.second seeds starters, having not posted great results but he is
:15:54. > :16:03.through against Gulbis. -- second seed status. He just took a little
:16:04. > :16:08.bit of back that serve, Marcus Willis, his variety on the service
:16:09. > :16:18.game has been excellent, keeping his opponents guessing. Just 93 mph but
:16:19. > :16:24.it is precision rather than power. He continents with his partner is
:16:25. > :16:28.very well, left and right, difficult for the contenders to get any
:16:29. > :16:39.rhythm. Swinging one-way from Marcus and the other from Clarke. They had
:16:40. > :16:48.a fine victory in the first game, great noise, they were taking their
:16:49. > :16:54.shoes off and everything. But as a reference to last year... There is a
:16:55. > :17:07.challenge coming here. -- that is a reference to last year.
:17:08. > :17:12.There was a complaint from Marcus that maybe that should have been
:17:13. > :17:18.spotted and the call should not have been made. They have done very well
:17:19. > :17:29.with their challenges, so far, the British pair.
:17:30. > :17:38.The majority of these fans, if they had not seen these teams before,
:17:39. > :17:44.which is the number two seeds and which is the wildcard? You could not
:17:45. > :17:46.say with confidence which was which? There is a massive disparity between
:17:47. > :18:01.the rankings as well. The immediate challenge from Clarke.
:18:02. > :18:08.The French pair pretty confident that clipped the line. Let us see.
:18:09. > :18:17.Going pretty gung ho with the challenges!
:18:18. > :18:27.That was unlucky. When that came off his racquet, it did look like it
:18:28. > :19:16.might be in. Just enough spin to take that out.
:19:17. > :19:26.Size 13 feet! Just as well he has co-sponsorship and clothing deal!
:19:27. > :19:28.That was a good service from the defending champions. 3-2, the third
:19:29. > :19:49.set. I wonder, this is the first time
:19:50. > :19:51.that Herbert and Mahut have come to Wimbledon as defending champions,
:19:52. > :19:57.the additional pressure perhaps telling a little bit? Because
:19:58. > :20:01.performances of late have not been to the standard they have set
:20:02. > :20:06.themselves? It is difficult to get performance consistency, there are
:20:07. > :20:10.so many good teams out there, they are just pecking at your heels all
:20:11. > :20:15.the time, especially when you are this heralded team at the French
:20:16. > :20:18.pair. It is just tough to retain that level of consistency that you
:20:19. > :20:24.could see with Jamie Murray and Bruno Suarez, going out last
:20:25. > :20:32.night... It is very difficult. Taking that 7-5 in the end. It is
:20:33. > :20:39.amazing, testament to the depth of men's tennis, you have the British
:20:40. > :20:46.wild card pair, here. 708 in the world, and Clarke, 882. And they are
:20:47. > :20:50.contesting this match really well. Up against the second seeds. And the
:20:51. > :20:58.reigning champions! Quite outstanding. Clarke serving at 2-3
:20:59. > :21:12.in the third set. Maybe they have not reached the
:21:13. > :21:16.standards they have set themselves, Wellington onto Grand Slams, they
:21:17. > :21:21.had that fine win in the first round, taking out Gonzalez and
:21:22. > :21:23.Donald Young, who reached the final of the French Open before losing to
:21:24. > :22:11.Harrelson and Venus. They have been using this formation
:22:12. > :22:16.quite a lot on the serve of Clarke. What it means is that when Marcus is
:22:17. > :22:21.down that the net, the returners do not know which way she will go, left
:22:22. > :22:27.or right, and her fears quick off the mark, he can pick off the return
:22:28. > :22:31.of the net and he is so a deft -- adept with half volleys and his
:22:32. > :22:37.artistry. He can normally get the volley away. But if he gets that
:22:38. > :22:43.wrong, he gets burned. The return tactic against this is normally to
:22:44. > :22:53.hammer the return down blind. -- down the line. But away from Clarke
:22:54. > :22:58.to secure another point. Look at that fine first volley. Mahut tried
:22:59. > :23:03.to intervene but his body weight was going backwards and Clarke could
:23:04. > :23:14.stamp all over that one. Into the Open court.
:23:15. > :23:24.Marcus has been serving well. But also Clarke. Three games each. The
:23:25. > :23:25.third set. There could be some after son having to be applied later this
:23:26. > :23:49.evening! -- after son. She already has the water and the
:23:50. > :23:54.sunglasses... Nicely done. Monday and Tuesday in the village, there
:23:55. > :23:59.were more than a few red faces and red arms and various other things.
:24:00. > :24:08.It is not just what that some people are drinking as well! Their souvenir
:24:09. > :24:49.glasses. -- water that some people are drinking.
:24:50. > :25:00.The French team have been without written in the serving deliveries,
:25:01. > :25:02.yielding six double faults already, very uncharacteristic, not just
:25:03. > :25:09.getting the run of the challenges either. The British are just
:25:10. > :25:12.clipping the lines, all-important lines. That is nice from the
:25:13. > :25:39.languid, six foot four tall Herbert. What about that return from Clarke?
:25:40. > :25:44.That was like a missile! That was very loud on the microphone! He
:25:45. > :25:48.really got a hold of that. Keeping that nice and low. How could you not
:25:49. > :26:39.enjoy yourself? The cloud has gobbled up the sun
:26:40. > :26:42.temporarily, which is a rarity for this week. It has been sun-kissed
:26:43. > :26:47.throughout and the players will probably welcome that little relief
:26:48. > :26:52.from the dazzling sunshine. The temperatures have been kinder to
:26:53. > :26:59.date, a little bit lower, 26 degrees. Very little breeze. Ideal
:27:00. > :27:05.for the ball tosses and the like. I guess a lot of these fans will be
:27:06. > :27:13.getting ahead of themselves with a possible British wind? Who knows? --
:27:14. > :27:18.possible British winners. Nice to have some doubles on BBC Two, plenty
:27:19. > :27:22.more next week but we are leaving this, to continue watching you can
:27:23. > :27:26.do so on the Red Button and also on the website. I am sure you will
:27:27. > :27:31.understand we were moving, heading straight to Centre Court to see the
:27:32. > :27:36.18 time grand slam champion, seven times Wimbledon champion, Roger
:27:37. > :27:41.Federer, in his match against Mischa Zverev, the brother of Sasha. They
:27:42. > :27:43.have just got under way. You have only missed one point. Tim Henman
:27:44. > :27:58.and Mark Petchey are with this one. Encouraging start, the opening point
:27:59. > :28:19.from Zverez against the Roger Federer server. -- serve.
:28:20. > :28:26.There will be more of what that came from today, the serve and volley
:28:27. > :28:27.tactics will be limited, you would feel, on a fairly frequent basis by
:28:28. > :28:58.Zverez. He could not have hit that approach
:28:59. > :29:01.any better, Zverez. Hypothetically, that is a good tactic if you can
:29:02. > :29:09.play strong to the forehand to open up the backhand. And especially
:29:10. > :29:13.being left-handed, you have a chance to come forward. But you have to go
:29:14. > :29:24.into the forehand of Roger Federer with some firepower.
:29:25. > :29:35.UMPIRE: Game Federer. First point went Mischa's way. The next four
:29:36. > :29:50.went Federer's. That type of rally that develops is
:29:51. > :29:52.something that Zverev will be keen not to allow to happen on his own
:29:53. > :30:18.service games here. It was a clinic in Australia how he
:30:19. > :30:23.returned the Zverev serve after Zverev had earlier put out Murray in
:30:24. > :30:27.the tournament. One of their differences is how
:30:28. > :30:28.close Federer stayed to the baseline consistently on the return not
:30:29. > :30:55.giving Zverev time to get in. Federer sending a couple of early
:30:56. > :31:00.messages with those passing shots. For a big guy at the net, sometimes
:31:01. > :31:03.it's easier to react and dive to the side. Not as easy to get your body
:31:04. > :31:57.out of the way down the middle. He will have considered that a real
:31:58. > :32:11.chance to give himself the first break point of the match.
:32:12. > :32:16.Interesting to note just how often he went into the body of Federer
:32:17. > :32:35.with his first serve, almost 50% of the time on the deuce side.
:32:36. > :32:40.Because Federer stays on the baseline, that's why he's trying to
:32:41. > :32:52.tuck him up there with the bigger serve.
:32:53. > :32:56.He's created two break points against Federer this year and broken
:32:57. > :34:02.once. That's better. Had he taken Tim
:34:03. > :34:05.Henman's advice he might have got a couple of break points early in this
:34:06. > :34:50.match. That first serve was actually out. Hawk-Eye tells us.
:34:51. > :34:56.Tough to see how Zverev will have an impact in the rallies when he's
:34:57. > :35:12.playing from nine feet behind the baseline.
:35:13. > :35:18.Little more challenging for Federer but a hold all the same.
:35:19. > :35:29.SUE BARKER: Federer 2-1 up. We'll be right back on centre. One result to
:35:30. > :35:37.bring you. Younger brother Sascha is through winning in straight sets
:35:38. > :35:40.against Ofner of Austria. He will next take on Milos Raonic, last
:35:41. > :35:49.year's finalist on Monday. That will be in the Fourth Round on Monday.
:35:50. > :35:52.Just 20 years of age. Many people's tip to be a world number one. More
:35:53. > :35:57.of him on Monday. Over on Court No 1, another of the
:35:58. > :36:00.up-and-coming youngsters, 23-year-old Dominic Thiem, who is
:36:01. > :36:04.trying to break into the top five. He's seeded eight at these
:36:05. > :36:09.championships. It is a look ahead to the future, his opponent just 20
:36:10. > :36:14.years of age, Donaldson. That match is on the red button and BBC Sport
:36:15. > :36:18.website. Over on court 2, we've got Martina
:36:19. > :36:21.Hingis here. She is partnering Jamie Murray in the doubles. He
:36:22. > :36:25.disappointingly lost in the men's doubles yesterday. They are the top
:36:26. > :36:31.seed in the Mixed Doubles. They are taking on a British pair. They're
:36:32. > :36:35.5-3 up. That match is on the red button. That's what's happening
:36:36. > :36:49.elsewhere, back we go. COMMENTATOR: Federer just finding
:36:50. > :36:53.his way into this match, just checking what sort of different
:36:54. > :36:58.tactics Zverev is bringing to the party tonight.
:36:59. > :37:00.Slightly awkward time of day at the far end for another ten minutes or
:37:01. > :38:00.so. Just classic return against the
:38:01. > :38:34.serve, volley. That's the danger when you don't
:38:35. > :38:53.find the body, goes into the pocket. 124mph and Zverev has only taken a
:38:54. > :39:35.couple of steps into the court. He's always had a good record
:39:36. > :39:42.against left handers if they're not from Majorca in Spain. Career-wise
:39:43. > :39:47.he's won 115 matches and lost 36. 23 of those against Rafa. If we take
:39:48. > :39:55.Federer from when he really became the player he is... That we see
:39:56. > :39:59.today from when he won Wimbledon in 2003, he is 92 match victories
:40:00. > :40:01.against left handers with just 26 losses. Of course, 23 of those to
:40:02. > :40:12.Nadal. I'm not going to make you name the
:40:13. > :40:16.three. I'd be impressed if you even got one
:40:17. > :40:38.actually. I'm putting my thinking cap on.
:40:39. > :40:45.An empty court. Zverev nowhere to be seen and trailing Federer in his
:40:46. > :41:00.wake at the moment. 4-1 already. This is the hardest you've worked in
:41:01. > :41:02.many years, isn't it, Tim? You've got me going now! It's a good trivia
:41:03. > :41:19.one. Three lefties since 2003? While you think about that, here's
:41:20. > :41:24.another thought, why do you think it is that Zverev has decided since
:41:25. > :41:28.Australia to move so deep against Federer off the return? He's moved
:41:29. > :41:32.on his second serve six metres further back. In Australia, super
:41:33. > :41:37.aggressive, up inside the baseline. He's gone so much deeper against it.
:41:38. > :41:41.What would be the logic for that? I can't answer that question because
:41:42. > :41:46.if you ask me, it's a mistake. The one thing that you can do more
:41:47. > :41:50.easily on a hard court is take the ball earlier because you've got a
:41:51. > :41:55.perfect bounce. On a grass court, after six days of play, it's not
:41:56. > :41:59.always easy to take the ball early. If Zverev is going to play this far
:42:00. > :42:03.behind the baseline, when they get into rallies, where the serve is
:42:04. > :42:12.taken out of the equation, I'd be surprise today he won 20% of the
:42:13. > :42:14.points -- surprised if he won 20% of the
:42:15. > :42:39.points. I'm going to throw out my first
:42:40. > :42:46.lefty - didn't he in Asia lose to Vinolas? That's correct.
:42:47. > :43:28.You've got me totally distracted now. I'm not even watching this
:43:29. > :43:51.match! A shout out to Wayne Arthurs. No. It is with a country with an A,
:43:52. > :44:00.Austrian. Kubec? Meltzer. Put me out of my misery. Delbonas as well. In
:44:01. > :44:26.the midst of changing racquets in 2013.
:44:27. > :44:37.He will be happy he's had the opportunity to play out here on the
:44:38. > :44:38.Centre Court. There was a time in his career where he was thinking of
:44:39. > :45:00.stopping. He had wrist fractures, fractured
:45:01. > :45:05.ribs, herniated disc in his back. It's phenomenal that he is out here,
:45:06. > :45:07.partly due to his brother's love of tennis and his willingness to
:45:08. > :45:27.support Mischa to get him back. It's just not meant to look that
:45:28. > :46:05.easy. Exactly what I was thinking. Federer trying to work over Zverev's
:46:06. > :46:09.forehand. I think it's easier for Zverev to take his chip backhand
:46:10. > :46:10.earlier, play into the forehand keeping him further behind the
:46:11. > :46:32.baseline. A terrific return. Federer unsure,
:46:33. > :47:09.for once, what to do. Caught in two minds whether to play
:47:10. > :47:34.the ball as a volley or pick up the half-volley.
:47:35. > :47:38.Just the second break of the Federer serve this year. You Deserve This
:47:39. > :47:57.House earned it well. -- Zverev earned it well. He was
:47:58. > :48:02.ranked inside the world's top 50 in 2009, courtesy of those injuries and
:48:03. > :48:07.lack of motivation dropped all the way outside the ATP top 1,000 by
:48:08. > :48:12.March 2015. For him to be back this year with a career high of 29
:48:13. > :48:18.earlier, currently playing at 30 in the world, is just a wonderful story
:48:19. > :48:22.for the Zverev family which has a few more chatters to be written by
:48:23. > :48:29.the younger brother as well. But now the focus on Mischa. Father on the
:48:30. > :48:34.right in the white cap. His mum behind. Not always watching. Down in
:48:35. > :48:44.Australia, fortunate to be there this year, she was having a little
:48:45. > :48:47.stroll, while Sasha was out there in a tight battle. She wasn't wanting
:48:48. > :49:04.to watch. Willing to watch her son against Federer.
:49:05. > :49:25.Going to go a long way long. With Federer going down the middle on a
:49:26. > :49:27.few passing shots, you're eager to react, basically couldn't get his
:49:28. > :49:56.racquet out of the way of it. Clinically put away. Trying to
:49:57. > :49:58.utilise those skills at the net, find the angles rather than the
:49:59. > :50:14.pace. Linesperson taking another direct
:50:15. > :51:18.hit. All credit to Zverev, 4-1 first set,
:51:19. > :51:22.looked like Federer could run away with things. He's dug his heels in,
:51:23. > :51:55.played a couple of great games to get the score back level.
:51:56. > :52:00.Good pressure being applied by Federer.
:52:01. > :52:05.The way he's stepping into the backhand and really being
:52:06. > :52:11.aggressive, that's been a definite change this year.
:52:12. > :52:42.UMPIRE: Correction. Called out, overruled by the chair.
:52:43. > :52:53.107mph forehand winner which unleashed the power.
:52:54. > :52:59.As you say, Tim, his ability to step in this year, particularly on the
:53:00. > :53:04.return and hit over it and there's his backhand in full flow, it's been
:53:05. > :53:08.a major winning shot this year. It certainly has. In some respects
:53:09. > :53:12.that's a slightly easier backhand when the ball is low. The one that's
:53:13. > :53:16.really been impressive is when it's up high, shoulder high, with the
:53:17. > :53:23.one-handed backhand and certainly when it's come from a left-hander
:53:24. > :53:27.with heavy spin, not easy to do. But I really feel that Federer is
:53:28. > :53:32.looking to be more aggressive on that side.
:53:33. > :53:38.That's why Zverev wants to get to the net, he will be punished off the
:53:39. > :53:45.backhand side as well as the forehand, also the spin rate, the
:53:46. > :53:52.control he has compared to Zverev. That looks like one of your forehand
:53:53. > :53:59.spin rates. That could be slice as well! Nine games in, looking at the
:54:00. > :54:03.stats, first serve percentage for Zverev 82%. It's not as if he's just
:54:04. > :54:06.rolling it into the middle of the box. He's being aggressive. He'd
:54:07. > :55:52.like to keep that up. Things moving along at quite a pace.
:55:53. > :56:19.Just 28 minutes for the first ten games.
:56:20. > :56:33.It's almost like he used the change of pace on that forehand, looped it
:56:34. > :56:34.high, kept the ball deep. Not something you expect to see on a
:56:35. > :56:46.grass court. Certainly not oblivious to the
:56:47. > :57:52.pressure at times, Federer. Live by their sword, die by their
:57:53. > :57:55.sword. You know when Federer is up against it, he's going to be
:57:56. > :58:18.aggressive, not scared to finish the point at net
:58:19. > :58:28.What a phenomenal rally and such a good point as well.
:58:29. > :00:01.Smart tennis from Zverev. Very deep return. He has an opportunity to
:00:02. > :00:03.press Federer with the backhand and this sets up another break point
:00:04. > :00:36.opportunity. UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenging the
:00:37. > :00:38.call. Right in front of us. There was no confidence. The call was a
:00:39. > :01:13.little bit late. That is why. You could hear just how important
:01:14. > :01:30.that was to Federer. So easy in these situations to say
:01:31. > :01:34.that it is Federer who has gone off the ball rather than give credit to
:01:35. > :01:40.his opponent, who is employing these deeper tactics and when he finds the
:01:41. > :01:44.time he has a nice blend with his backhand, pushing some and hitting
:01:45. > :01:48.some of them as well. He has certainly surprised me with some of
:01:49. > :01:52.the baseline exchanges, he has stayed in there and when he has the
:01:53. > :02:00.opportunity to move forward he has done so. Federer is in a match right
:02:01. > :02:07.now. The foundation has been laid by the serve of Zverev, 77% first
:02:08. > :02:13.serves in the court. You can see Federer pulling out a tissue from
:02:14. > :02:19.his bag. He is not 100%, I do not think, health-wise. It was picked up
:02:20. > :02:31.after his last match, doing his interviews. Struggling a little bit
:02:32. > :02:34.with the cold. It was given to him by one of his boys. I am sure he
:02:35. > :05:19.appreciated that! Such a difficult ball to volley,
:05:20. > :05:26.there was no pace, dipping quickly. And that big second serve at 40-0.
:05:27. > :05:30.Not looking so clever right now. He served a double fault. Suddenly back
:05:31. > :06:06.at deuce and no two points away from losing the first set.
:06:07. > :06:20.In the end, they did not come back to haunt him but it did make life
:06:21. > :06:23.tougher going into the tie-break. Of course, they played a tie-break in
:06:24. > :07:14.their last outing which Federer won. Even the best in the world need a
:07:15. > :07:19.little bit of luck at times! He gets so many crisp returns you do not
:07:20. > :07:20.expect to see that mis-hit, recognised with the apology from
:07:21. > :07:34.Federer. Definitely out. Another great
:07:35. > :07:55.pick-up from Zverev. He has got three challengers, this
:07:56. > :08:23.is purely for peace of mind at this stage in the set.
:08:24. > :08:32.He accomplishes the goal of hanging onto both service points in style as
:08:33. > :08:38.well. In his previous service game he missed a few first serves but,
:08:39. > :08:49.come the tie-break, time and again that finds its mark.
:08:50. > :09:00.He really has not frequented the middle on his serve at all in the
:09:01. > :09:04.opening set, Zverev, but in the tie-breaker he has gone there and a
:09:05. > :09:40.couple of times he has kept Federer guessing on the return.
:09:41. > :09:48.Again, he has gone there a couple of times in this tie-breaker he gets to
:09:49. > :09:53.within one point of Federer. He did a great job of sticking in the first
:09:54. > :10:12.set early on and he has done a great job of sticking in this tie-break.
:10:13. > :10:18.Slight benefit with the serve and volley on his second serve in the
:10:19. > :10:22.set that Zverev thought he might come in and he dropped the return
:10:23. > :10:23.little bit short. Potentially thinking about that. And Federer
:10:24. > :10:54.pounced. He used the dimensions of the court
:10:55. > :11:23.to perfection, corner to corner. That brings up three set points.
:11:24. > :11:35.Subtlety. And, then after, severe power, directed straight at Zverev
:11:36. > :11:39.and the opening set goes to the 18 time grand slam charging. --
:11:40. > :11:45.champion. SUE BARKER: Roger Federer takes the
:11:46. > :11:50.first set on the tie-break. This happened a short time ago, Martina
:11:51. > :11:55.Hingis in the Mixed Doubles with Jamie Murray, the top seeds. Looking
:11:56. > :12:00.at Martina Hingis, winning five grand slam singles championships, 17
:12:01. > :12:08.grand slam doubles championships in the women's doubles and the Mixed
:12:09. > :12:14.Doubles, winning 6-3, 6-0. Very much the favourites to take the title,
:12:15. > :12:20.Jamie Murray and by Tina Hingis. On Court Number One, Dominic Thiem has
:12:21. > :12:24.taken the first set 7-5, on serve in the second, so much expected of this
:12:25. > :12:28.young man, one of the youngsters tipped for the top, that is the
:12:29. > :12:33.feature match on the Red Button. And back to the match we were watching
:12:34. > :12:39.on BBC Two, with Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis, Jay Clarke is just 18
:12:40. > :12:42.and Marcus Willis is making such a name for himself, getting through
:12:43. > :12:48.qualifying last year and playing Federer, 2-1 up against the
:12:49. > :12:51.defending champions and the number two seeds, that could be a big story
:12:52. > :12:57.and if you want to watch that, it's on the Red Button and the website.
:12:58. > :13:07.And over on Court 12, defending champions in the Mixed Doubles,
:13:08. > :13:12.Heather Watson, going well. 4-1 up with two breaks in the first set.
:13:13. > :13:15.Also on the Red Button and the website. That is what is happening
:13:16. > :13:19.around the grounds. Back to the main court.
:13:20. > :13:26.This has been a highly entertaining opening set, the sort of tennis
:13:27. > :13:31.perhaps we do not see enough of these days, the role serving and
:13:32. > :13:34.volleying of Zverev, and more sporadic from Federer but some
:13:35. > :13:45.wonderful passing shots. Some subtle tennis. Some wonderful strategy
:13:46. > :14:09.employed by both men out there. Lots to savour.
:14:10. > :15:09.It was going slow enough to see this one.
:15:10. > :15:18.That sometimes is when you don't make the shot, you put the thought
:15:19. > :15:22.into the bind over an opponent that you might go there again and Federer
:15:23. > :15:27.are shaping up to make another lob and Zverev was backing off, but he
:15:28. > :15:28.was strong enough to pick up that volley, one of the strongest,
:15:29. > :15:46.fittest players out there, Zverev. Sometimes when serving and
:15:47. > :15:52.volleying, the faster the return comes, the easier it is and Federer
:15:53. > :16:28.took off the pace and Zverev had to keep that half volley deep.
:16:29. > :16:44.UMPIRE: Thank you, Madam, can we have the ball back? Thank you. You
:16:45. > :16:49.can throw it! I do not think the lady who picked the ball up was
:16:50. > :16:57.particularly keen to give it back! She had hidden it behind her! Behind
:16:58. > :17:02.her back! Trying to keep a souvenir. The shot is still open, isn't it?
:17:03. > :17:15.These tennis balls are quite expensive.
:17:16. > :17:31.Strong start. To get up and running. 77 and three, Roger Federer, when
:17:32. > :17:40.winning the opening set at Wimbledon, his losses to Jo Wilfried
:17:41. > :17:46.Tsonga in 2011, he was 2-0 up and the winner in 2013 and Novak
:17:47. > :17:52.Djokovic in the final of 2014 but it is not an occurrence or I lead that
:17:53. > :18:35.happens too often. That he loses. Zverev will have his work cut out.
:18:36. > :18:42.We talk about little steps and getting into position, he is one of
:18:43. > :18:50.the best are taking a big step to cover a lot of ground to get to the
:18:51. > :19:07.ball but he needs to. -- that he needs to. Quick between points, in
:19:08. > :19:14.terms of pace. You can see how he has changed his return profile
:19:15. > :19:19.against the serve and volley today, in his opening rounds, just 53%,
:19:20. > :19:24.getting the ball back into play to get a chance to play and today he
:19:25. > :19:28.has had to go after it with Zverev coming after him, almost nightly 3%,
:19:29. > :19:41.he has been driving through the ball. -- 93%.
:19:42. > :19:47.Different attacks need different defences and that is why the
:19:48. > :19:51.top-flight stay at the top because they can't find whatever is thrown
:19:52. > :19:55.at them through the course of the Grand Slam, he has got away with
:19:56. > :20:00.this, Fergus Murphy decided there was no hindrance, strictly speaking
:20:01. > :21:46.that probably should have been replayed.
:21:47. > :21:53.That was shot that losing talent. Such class and quick thinking
:21:54. > :21:59.because that was another terrific pick-up from Zverev. Look at that.
:22:00. > :22:01.It looked like he could defend the situation against anyone and against
:22:02. > :22:10.anybody else he would have. Unbelievable shot. And this is a
:22:11. > :22:14.break point. That is saved. With an immaculate delivery. Terrific tussle
:22:15. > :23:16.at the start of the second. I thought this might be a dying art,
:23:17. > :23:21.the serve and volley play, but we certainly do not want this to go out
:23:22. > :23:24.because it is exhilarating. It creates such a shotmaking skills
:23:25. > :23:48.from your opponent, as well. If there is any consolation for
:23:49. > :23:51.Zverev right now, he is forcing Federer to produce perfection. The
:23:52. > :24:10.unfortunate news for the German is that he is delivering.
:24:11. > :24:37.That was a stunning returning game and it stunned the German.
:24:38. > :24:45.Sheer excellence from Federer in that particular game, Zverev did
:24:46. > :24:50.nothing wrong, serving well on the break point after getting passed by
:24:51. > :24:59.that wonderful backhand from Federer. And Zverev will be
:25:00. > :25:00.wondering, what else can he do to keep this match as competitive as it
:25:01. > :25:17.currently is? And all is very well with this man's
:25:18. > :25:23.world. This is why - look at this, what a pick-up from Zverev, he cuts
:25:24. > :25:34.down the angles, you think, until Federer produces that. Pure
:25:35. > :26:13.instinct, isn't it? And a little bit of talent thrown in as well.
:26:14. > :26:20.He doesn't have the raw power of Zverev on the forehand side that is
:26:21. > :26:25.younger brother does, Federer did not give him anything, 90 mph on his
:26:26. > :27:03.second serve, that is pretty routine for him.
:27:04. > :27:08.It is not really easy, psychologically, for Zverev, he has
:27:09. > :27:13.played a lot of good tennis and he is down one set and a break and he
:27:14. > :27:18.might start to push a little bit too hard. In actual fact, he just has to
:27:19. > :27:19.keep doing the same thing and hope that the levels from Federer drop a
:27:20. > :27:41.little bit. And that feels like me hope, the way
:27:42. > :27:50.that Federer is playing. Not a lot of it based on reality. He has
:27:51. > :27:55.beaten Nishikori, David Ferrer, Morena Baccarin Australia, Stan
:27:56. > :29:28.Wawrinka. He has got quality, this man. -- Andy Murray in Australia.
:29:29. > :29:32.I'm not surprised his backers are, having to bend for so many of these
:29:33. > :30:05.low volleys. -- his back is sore. Quality second serve, 104mph, deep,
:30:06. > :30:09.sliding into the body. If he misses his spot by six inches
:30:10. > :30:24.it will be in the hitting zone of Federer's return.
:30:25. > :30:58.UMPIRE: Game, Zverev. Nice, gritty hold
:30:59. > :31:05.The 29-year-old is still very much competitive. They said he got a
:31:06. > :31:08.little tired in the start of the third set in the previous round.
:31:09. > :31:12.Said his opponent started reading his serve, but ended up going five.
:31:13. > :31:17.Maybe just feeling a little bit, as you say Tim. Federer not only hits
:31:18. > :31:22.the winners, but he forces you to work so incredibly hard all the time
:31:23. > :31:24.with the amount of balls that he's getting back into court at the
:31:25. > :31:31.height he's getting them into court as well.
:31:32. > :31:35.That's the challenge when you're playing Federer on any surface. He
:31:36. > :31:41.can hurt you in so many ways. He's got such a good serve. He hits his
:31:42. > :31:45.spots. Get the ball back into play, dominating with his forehand.
:31:46. > :31:50.He's not scared to come forward. He's a great athlete. Not many areas
:31:51. > :32:21.to attack. Federer halfway to victory after a
:32:22. > :32:34.set-and-a-half here. UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenging the
:32:35. > :32:36.call, left far side line. The ball was called out. I think he missed
:32:37. > :32:56.one of these in '98, but not since! UMPIRE: Mr Federer has two
:32:57. > :33:30.challenges remaining. Swing and a miss as it just holds up
:33:31. > :34:20.and jumps up off the line. He's been in imperious form in this
:34:21. > :36:02.second set, has not put a foot wrong.
:36:03. > :36:44.That last volley brings up his third hold of the second set. Zverev needs
:36:45. > :36:46.to find a way to get competitive here in the second set and find a
:36:47. > :37:07.way to break back. At this stage is there anything he
:37:08. > :37:09.can do or is he solely reliant on Federer just dropping off the kind
:37:10. > :37:14.of performance that we're seeing from him right now? It would
:37:15. > :37:18.certainly help Zverev's cause if Federer missed a few first serves,
:37:19. > :37:24.which doesn't happen too often at the business ends of these sets. If
:37:25. > :37:27.he does see some second serves, I think he's got to put himself in a
:37:28. > :37:32.position at the net where Federer is trying to beat him with his
:37:33. > :37:39.backhand. It's easier said than done.
:37:40. > :37:41.Just managed the one point against the serve in this second set has
:37:42. > :38:37.Zverev. That was off a first serve. That is a slight problem as well,
:38:38. > :38:40.because he doesn't have the real power and Federer sees him so far
:38:41. > :38:44.behind the baseline. You see the pace that Federer starts running
:38:45. > :39:04.after he hits that serve. He gets so tight to the net.
:39:05. > :39:12.Just so clever. Talk about keeping good depth in tennis. But it was the
:39:13. > :39:16.shortness of that ball that caused the problem for Zverev. And it was
:39:17. > :39:19.intentional. Zverev using the slice, Federer able to sneak in. Tight to
:39:20. > :39:46.the net again. APPLAUSE
:39:47. > :39:50.It's good tennis from Federer, don't get me wrong. Down a set and a
:39:51. > :39:53.break, against possibly the greatest grass court player in history, he's
:39:54. > :39:58.got to be prepared to take a few risks.
:39:59. > :40:09.UMPIRE: Game Federer. Standing seven, eight feet behind the
:40:10. > :40:17.baseline to return the second serve. I don't think it's going to be
:40:18. > :40:23.successful. Catches win matches.
:40:24. > :42:21.UMPIRE: Game Zverev. He'll be hoping that I don't say
:42:22. > :42:31.that after the next game, otherwise it is a long, long journey back for
:42:32. > :42:37.Mischa Zverev down two sets to love. To be fair that would have been
:42:38. > :43:00.harder to drop. Even in front of 15,000 people.
:43:01. > :43:15.Seven and one against the Zverev family's, Federer, as they pop over
:43:16. > :43:20.to see the throngs of people out here. What a pleasure that the
:43:21. > :43:23.weather has been so fabulous so that people can enjoy that particular
:43:24. > :43:28.spot here at Wimbledon. So many magical little corners of this
:43:29. > :43:30.wonderful ground. That is arguably the most famous after Centre Court
:43:31. > :44:41.these days. Sent back with such accuracy this
:44:42. > :44:43.ball here from Zverev. Little short on the approach. Still had to be
:44:44. > :45:31.executed the passing shot. I don't think that really shot
:45:32. > :45:36.through like the previous serve on the ad side. That one he just

:46:43. > :46:47.points against the defending champions, Herbert and Mahut. They
:46:48. > :46:50.weren't able to take it and now they've dropped the fourth set. That

:47:07. > :47:10.they have put out the 13th seeds 6-1, 6-3. Such a good partnership
:47:11. > :47:15.these two and going through the championships well here again. The
:47:16. > :47:19.defending champions safely through. That's what's been happening

:47:25. > :47:31.COMMENTATOR: Eyes firmly on the prize, not wanting to take a longer

:47:35. > :47:39.It's only Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Novak Djokovic who know how to come

:47:43. > :49:07.Trailing two sets to love. A number of good body second serves

:49:14. > :49:14.them the chance to swifl out of the way and -- swivel out of the way and
:49:15. > :49:57.hit a shot like that. Hasn't really bothered about where
:49:58. > :49:58.Zverev is at the net. He's gone with raw power, sometimes straight at the
:49:59. > :50:34.German. Good hold for Zverev at the start of
:50:35. > :50:38.this third set. I can't fault him in the way he's gone about his own
:50:39. > :50:43.service games. For me, the return games, when he's got the opportunity
:50:44. > :50:48.to be more aggressive on second serve is something that he could
:50:49. > :50:51.possibly change. To be quite honest, the second serve of Federer is
:50:52. > :51:13.possibly going to be the shortest ball he gets.
:51:14. > :51:18.He ended up having to produce a fairly decent shot there, but at the
:51:19. > :51:22.same time, you can see part of the problem for Zverev, when he stays so
:51:23. > :51:25.deep, he is unable to really capitalise on a short ball from
:51:26. > :51:28.Federer early in the rally as well. He was chasing to get up to his

:53:43. > :53:46.UMPIRE: Game Federer. Just let the court do the work and it takes all
:53:47. > :53:58.the bounce out of the ball. UMPIRE: New balls please.
:53:59. > :54:04.Zverev is still sticking in here at the start of the third. I can't see
:54:05. > :54:14.his fitness coach, who works with the Zverev brothers. I don't think
:54:15. > :54:18.he's back out from working with Sasha on his cool round and recovery
:54:19. > :54:22.- oh, there he is, in the glasses on the left-hand side. Can you see him
:54:23. > :54:27.in the blue shirt. What a wonderful job he's been doing and over the
:54:28. > :54:32.years as well, working of course, with Andy Murray along with others.
:54:33. > :55:35.He's one of the best in the business.
:55:36. > :55:40.That's the one-two combination from Federer down low, force your
:55:41. > :56:24.opponent to hit the ball up and then try to pick him off.
:56:25. > :56:48.Mum and dad urging their elder son on.
:56:49. > :56:55.Jez Green waxes lyrical about Mischa's fitness. He says he's one
:56:56. > :56:59.of the strongest and fastest he's ever worked with.
:57:00. > :57:06.If you can't put your racquet on the ball, it doesn't matter what your
:57:07. > :57:35.physical attributes are. That was as clean as they come
:57:36. > :57:46.And the pressure too much for Zverev. Federer breaks early in the
:57:47. > :57:51.third. SUE BARKER: So a break of serve for the seven-time champion on
:57:52. > :57:55.Centre Court. There's a story brewing over on court number three
:57:56. > :57:59.where Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis, this is break point in the second
:58:00. > :58:05.game of the fifth set. Against the number two seeds and the defending
:58:06. > :58:10.champions! Amazing scenes out on court number three. They are loving
:58:11. > :58:13.it out there. They've already had three match points in the fourth
:58:14. > :58:19.set, which they lost. It's in the fifth set. They are now 2-0 up and
:58:20. > :58:25.points for 3-0 up actually. So that is the score at the moment. Jay
:58:26. > :58:26.Clarke and Marcus Willis there. That's our feature match on the red
:58:27. > :58:46.button. More good news it is all happening,
:58:47. > :58:56.with British winners all over the place outside. Smith and Skupski
:58:57. > :59:05.there. That's what's happening outside. Back we go.
:59:06. > :59:08.What a story that would be on Court 3, looking like a wise decision from
:59:09. > :59:43.the wildcard committee. It's been interesting to look at
:59:44. > :59:48.Zverev's profile here. We talked about the second serve. But it's
:59:49. > :59:52.been a lot deeper his profile returning the first serve from
:59:53. > :59:58.Federer compared to Australia. About four metres deeper than when he was
:59:59. > :00:02.down under. He's making less returns today from a deeper position against
:00:03. > :00:13.Federer, winning less points as well.
:00:14. > :01:02.There is that quote from Winston Churchill, you should occasionally
:01:03. > :01:07.look at the results from a strategy and we can see this beautiful view
:01:08. > :01:14.of Centre Court, maybe the strategy from Zverev needs to be taken and
:01:15. > :01:18.about. I am sure Federer is that enough pressure on serve today. --
:01:19. > :01:59.has felt enough pressure. He delayed the swing up the ball but
:02:00. > :02:02.the ball was not delayed once it touched the racquet, it fired past
:02:03. > :02:13.Zverev. Not only that, look at his footwork
:02:14. > :02:15.after the return, he covered the drop shot if Zverev was going to go
:02:16. > :02:45.there, well inside the baseline. Again, it is how he sees the ball
:02:46. > :02:50.but quickly, to manufacturing the perfect type of turn off that serve.
:02:51. > :02:53.He has been hitting through the majority of the balls and he
:02:54. > :03:13.definitely drops in there, with nothing on it.
:03:14. > :03:17.Quality from Zverev but the footwork and then the power to beat him from
:03:18. > :04:01.that far behind the baseline... Well played, Zverev. Good
:04:02. > :04:28.perseverance to defend that error. Perseverance pays off back. -- pays
:04:29. > :04:33.off. SUE BARKER: With the break of serve
:04:34. > :04:38.in the third set. Following this match, it has been an eventful day,
:04:39. > :04:45.Clare Balding will have to day at Wimbledon and all of the highlights
:04:46. > :04:47.from earlier. The middle Saturday of Wimbledon has a fantastic
:04:48. > :04:51.atmosphere, loads of people get here because they cannot during the week
:04:52. > :04:55.and we will have the best on court action and what the big names have
:04:56. > :05:00.to say and the shot of the day and anything that has been happening on
:05:01. > :05:08.social media. In theory, I will be joined by Boris Becker and Martina
:05:09. > :05:13.Navratilova. But where is Boris? SUE BARKER: We lost Boris Becker
:05:14. > :05:18.this morning. We were on the members lawn and he was on the players land.
:05:19. > :05:26.All of the highlights will follow the conclusion of this match.
:05:27. > :05:34.That was the end of the classic point although this time the hotdog
:05:35. > :05:39.did not produce the winner, as it has done so many times in his
:05:40. > :05:45.career. He was virtually smiling in that rally. Any other athlete that
:05:46. > :06:28.is more relaxed in the heat of battle... ?
:06:29. > :06:36.He can afford to be a little bit relaxed, it is not as though his
:06:37. > :06:41.greatness is in any dispute at all, it is just a question of how great
:06:42. > :06:48.people will describe him when he finally decides to hang up his
:06:49. > :06:54.racquet. That day has receded quite far away after the way he has played
:06:55. > :06:59.in 2017. Some wondered if he would even make it through to the lagoon
:07:00. > :07:31.politics. People are now talking Tokyo. -- the Rio Olympics.
:07:32. > :07:39.This is meant to be the third round of Wimbledon, not an exhibition! He
:07:40. > :09:03.appears to be everywhere at times. A gentle stroll to the chair from
:09:04. > :09:16.Federer, not even waiting to see if his opponent finish that. --
:09:17. > :09:20.finished that off. He looks relaxed but there is clearly an intensity
:09:21. > :09:27.that still burns brightly within him. Absolutely. Coming up to ten
:09:28. > :09:32.past eight on Saturday, he wants to make sure he finishes this off and
:09:33. > :09:52.move himself into the second week. It is hard to see what, if anything,
:09:53. > :09:56.Zverev can do to delay that particular passage. His father,
:09:57. > :10:06.Robert, in the background. They love their time here at Wimbledon. That
:10:07. > :10:14.would not be out of place in squash. His 500 and 55 match record is not
:10:15. > :10:20.necessarily 100% accurate but Amir Khan certainly exude confidence on
:10:21. > :10:23.the squash court, as he does on the tennis court. A couple of games from
:10:24. > :10:49.victory. The reaction from Zverev said it
:10:50. > :10:54.all. That had to be going right. The lines are there to be hit. They will
:10:55. > :12:04.certainly need repainting after this match! -- had to be going out.
:12:05. > :12:14.That is the problem, he was caught on little bit stranded deep off the
:12:15. > :12:15.baseline. Federer serving and volleying beautifully on the second
:12:16. > :13:08.serve. You don't need to worry about what
:13:09. > :13:13.your opponent is doing whenever you hit the ball but hard, do you? Just
:13:14. > :13:30.picked a spot and whack it. The wrong shot from Federer. He
:13:31. > :14:22.should have gone around the net post!
:14:23. > :14:28.The first time on Centre Court for Zverev and he has acquitted himself
:14:29. > :14:39.pretty well against one of the best players of all time on this surface.
:14:40. > :14:44.But you feel that his time out here is closing very shortly after the
:14:45. > :14:51.next game. He has taken on Federer five times and is yet to win one
:14:52. > :14:55.set. He has taken him to the tie-break on three occasions. In
:14:56. > :14:58.fact, there is only one other left-hander in the world who has
:14:59. > :15:03.managed to beat Federer more than once. Rafa Nadal is the obvious one
:15:04. > :15:09.but Franco Scolari managed to get a couple against Federer but it is not
:15:10. > :15:18.that left-handers have any sort of advantage against this man. Even
:15:19. > :15:24.limit which on the right-hand side. And the fitness trainer. What a
:15:25. > :15:29.fantastic job he has done with the Swiss stars, they're both look like
:15:30. > :15:40.they have not lost one step over the years. Federer has not put a foot
:15:41. > :15:48.wrong today. He was challenged in the opening set and he responded.
:15:49. > :16:59.After one hour and 48 minutes, he is serving for the match.
:17:00. > :17:06.Perfection, he finishes off the challenge from Zverev. Roger Federer
:17:07. > :17:11.moves through to a meeting with Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round.
:17:12. > :17:17.That was a lovely contest. Old school tennis being deployed by
:17:18. > :17:36.Zverev. But once again, he fights off most challengers in some style.
:17:37. > :17:44.Federer will take the plaudits but I think Zverev but in a very good
:17:45. > :17:49.performance, digging his heels in in the first set, fine serve and volley
:17:50. > :17:52.tennis. But it did not take long for Federer to continue to go through
:17:53. > :18:00.the gears. Another straight sets win. And through to the second week.
:18:01. > :18:04.An attractive match, enjoyed by everyone, including his wife. And
:18:05. > :18:11.his parents. An attractive match on Monday as well. In prospect, with
:18:12. > :18:19.Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian started the year strongly and has
:18:20. > :18:23.yet to win against Federer. 5-0 is the statistic there. A lot of people
:18:24. > :18:33.will tune in to watch those two face-off against each other. Over
:18:34. > :18:37.1100 matches won on tour and how many million autographs has he
:18:38. > :18:45.signed over the years? And he continues to do so, his love of the
:18:46. > :18:50.sport undiminished. The miles he has flown, the miles on the clock in
:18:51. > :18:54.terms of his body. Yet he does not seem to have lost any of the joy
:18:55. > :18:59.that the experiences and he steps onto any court around the world,
:19:00. > :19:00.particularly this one. A very special place for him over the
:19:01. > :19:20.years. A lot of smiles within Centre Court,
:19:21. > :19:28.so many fans here. He wins in straight sets. And he will discuss
:19:29. > :19:33.that win with Lee McKenzie. Congratulations. Three sets in under
:19:34. > :19:37.two hours, Zverev trying to throw everything at you but at times he
:19:38. > :19:42.had him ducking for cover. A lighted? I thought it was a good
:19:43. > :19:45.match, it was fun to play against a serve and volley player, you will
:19:46. > :19:50.see Lance and passing shots and drop shots so I thought it was nice to
:19:51. > :19:54.see that again and the crowds were unbelievable again and Mischa Zverev
:19:55. > :20:03.is a great guy and we really fed off each other, very happy. On paper it
:20:04. > :20:06.is the toughest had at Wimbledon so far. Do you feel battle hardened
:20:07. > :20:09.heading into the second week and do you need to be? Yes, it is important
:20:10. > :20:13.to get through the first week with a good feeling and I think I got that,
:20:14. > :20:19.first with the walkover, that did not give me much information but I
:20:20. > :20:23.saved my energy. Crucial energy, looking down the stretch but we have
:20:24. > :20:27.one round at a time and I must say it is always the first goal to get
:20:28. > :20:33.to the second week so I made that today. I am very happy to just sit
:20:34. > :20:37.back and relax today and come back stronger on Monday. Grigor Dimitrov
:20:38. > :20:41.in the next round, he has been likened to you in the past but has
:20:42. > :20:46.never beaten you in the five times you have met. Will he be tough?
:20:47. > :20:51.Every time I play against him he is stronger than before. He is in the
:20:52. > :20:56.perfect age, he is starting to understand his game best, he is
:20:57. > :21:00.physically strong, mentally he took the next step, that is what you
:21:01. > :21:04.expect from a player of his calibre. He had a Great Run in Australia,
:21:05. > :21:08.almost beat Rafa Nadal in the semifinals, we almost could have
:21:09. > :21:11.played in the finals. I am ready for a tough one but I am sure it will be
:21:12. > :21:17.another exciting match because he is a great shotmaker. Well done.
:21:18. > :21:23.SUE BARKER: What a glorious match that will be. Two of the best ball
:21:24. > :21:27.strikers in the world. Zverev played his part, you can tell the great
:21:28. > :21:31.friends but Roger Federer marches on into the second week, yet again,
:21:32. > :21:37.with another straight sets win on Centre Court Federer is on his way.
:21:38. > :21:44.From the superstore on Centre Court, to a big story that is taking place
:21:45. > :21:49.on Court number three. The British duo, the wildcards, Jay Clarke, just
:21:50. > :21:55.18, and Marcus Willis, the fairy tale story last year, up against the
:21:56. > :22:01.number two seeds, defending champions, Mahut and Herbert. It is
:22:02. > :22:06.for- two to the British team in the fifth and final set. And Jay Clarke
:22:07. > :22:23.is serving, Mark Donaldson and ball hand on commentary.
:22:24. > :22:36.Challengers have been their friend today, for the most part. They have
:22:37. > :22:43.had a fair bit of good fortune. Especially with the first couple of
:22:44. > :22:53.sets. Yes, good return. Acknowledged by both Jay Clarke and Marcus. A
:22:54. > :22:57.very good player, Herbert. There is keenness in their step, the French
:22:58. > :23:02.are marching around in the return positions, there is good energy.
:23:03. > :23:08.They took an extra bit of time, Jay Clarke calling Marcus back. Just for
:23:09. > :23:16.confirmation. That is a superb serve. And the pressure as well, it
:23:17. > :23:21.hits one of our cameramen. There is a big smile on his face as well. It
:23:22. > :23:27.is actually the cameraman bringing you that shot right there!
:23:28. > :23:46.Unperturbed. By the violent tennis ball!
:23:47. > :23:56.What have you! Packed house on a Saturday night. Never mind U2 and
:23:57. > :24:08.Knowle Gallagher at Twickenham! This is what it is all about! -- Knowle
:24:09. > :24:12.Gallagher. One of the easier call stomach. That was a big point, that
:24:13. > :24:35.is a gift for Mahut. They cannot sit still in the Willis
:24:36. > :24:45.Clarke camp, it is getting twitchy. Our heart rate monitor would be very
:24:46. > :24:56.interesting! And Ball is gone. -- dot ball is gone. -- that ball. 5-2.
:24:57. > :25:15.And one game away, the defending champions in big trouble!
:25:16. > :25:23.People still spilling into the court to catch a glance of this, it really
:25:24. > :25:28.is would be a seismic result for the British pair, the wildcards, who
:25:29. > :25:33.would have thought this? This is how they secured the last game to get to
:25:34. > :25:37.5-2. Wonderful kick serve from Jay Clarke and terrific hand skills from
:25:38. > :25:43.Marcus Willis, who has been so inventive at that. So effective
:25:44. > :25:49.together, look at the energy they have created. If they can turn this
:25:50. > :25:55.around, then Jay Clarke will make even more headlines in the Derby
:25:56. > :26:04.Telegraph! After coming back from two sets down in the first round...
:26:05. > :26:37.They find themselves just one game away.
:26:38. > :26:45.What a return from Jay Clarke! Causing confusion down the middle,
:26:46. > :26:49.which is normally reinforced in doubles but because the service
:26:50. > :26:50.partner went for the cross, it caused a little confusion. Solid
:26:51. > :27:14.return from Jay Clarke. And it is caught and returned. These
:27:15. > :27:18.two have been playing together forever and they have achieved a
:27:19. > :27:19.heck of a lot, the other two on the side of the net, they got together
:27:20. > :27:50.just weeks ago! So, after three hours and ten
:27:51. > :27:57.minutes, at 11 minutes past eight on a glorious Saturday evening, the man
:27:58. > :28:02.who made so many headlines last year, Marcus Willis, will serve. His
:28:03. > :28:03.18-year-old partner, Jay Clarke, might just be moments away from
:28:04. > :28:54.history. The finishing line, although inside,
:28:55. > :29:02.is proving hard to cross right now. -- in sight. He is a kid, he is a
:29:03. > :29:08.teenager, but he just knew what he had to do. That was incredibly
:29:09. > :29:09.mature. That timely cross and exquisitely put away. Still work to
:29:10. > :29:25.do. The Patriots really getting behind
:29:26. > :29:49.the British wildcards. In comes Herbert. What a serve!
:29:50. > :29:59.Again, the slice down the T brings up match point! 40-30. They might
:30:00. > :30:11.look calm. Inside, it is a different story.
:30:12. > :30:20.Witness the wildcards sending this crowd wild! The defending champions
:30:21. > :30:24.go out! SUE BARKER: Look at the family
:30:25. > :30:29.celebrating in the crowd. Massive scenes on Court number three. The
:30:30. > :30:33.crowd on their feet, they have seen the British wildcards but out the
:30:34. > :30:39.defending champions, what an incredible story this is! Well done
:30:40. > :30:42.to Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis. Wonderful scenes out there and I am
:30:43. > :30:46.sure they will be celebrating for the rest of the weekend. What a way
:30:47. > :30:50.to finish this first week here at Wimbledon. Clare Balding is next
:30:51. > :30:55.with Today at Wimbledon, stay tuned for that and I will be back on
:30:56. > :30:59.Monday for more from 11:30am on BBC Two. Goodbye!
