:00:44. > :00:56.Week one at Wimbledon was packed with action. But today, it shifts up

:00:57. > :00:59.a gear. The last 16 in the men's and women's all play, big names,

:01:00. > :01:04.champions wherever you look. It is a day like no other in the Grand Slam

:01:05. > :01:07.calendar. Stick with us, you won't want to take your eyes off it. This

:01:08. > :02:24.is magical, Manic Monday. It is that sort of day, there is so

:02:25. > :02:28.much happening here at the All England Club. It is my favourite day

:02:29. > :02:33.of the Championships, my favourite day of any Grand Slam. And knows a

:02:34. > :02:38.prize that the queues were so long this morning, because there's great

:02:39. > :02:42.tennis on all the courts here today. Here comes Jo Konta, with the

:02:43. > :02:51.pressure building in the second week of Wimbledon. She's looking relaxed.

:02:52. > :02:55.Rafael Nadal, also arriving, he certainly knows how to handle the

:02:56. > :03:00.pressure, the two-time champion, up against Gilles Muller today, who has

:03:01. > :03:08.served 72 aces so far. Caroline Garcia is facing Jo Konta today. She

:03:09. > :03:11.reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, and said then that she

:03:12. > :03:18.thought the pressure of being a hometown player. No pressure on her

:03:19. > :03:21.today. This is 19-year-old Ana Konjuh, and grass really could be

:03:22. > :03:25.her best surface. She is the youngest player left in the drawer,

:03:26. > :03:31.and she's facing the oldest player left, Venus Williams, five-time

:03:32. > :03:40.champion and the only former champion left in the winning score.

:03:41. > :03:45.All eyes are on this court again, in the corner, where Andy Murray likes

:03:46. > :03:49.to be, with his team, doing some gentle serves a. He has been there

:03:50. > :03:55.for about 40 minutes or so. There's Ivan Lendl. Everybody looking for

:03:56. > :03:59.the limp, but as Tim keeps telling me, it is not what happens between

:04:00. > :04:04.the points, it is only what happens during the points which matters, and

:04:05. > :04:16.he has looked so good so far at Wimbledon. It is a lovely day here.

:04:17. > :04:22.Here we are in pink! What a day this is, Tracy Austin, isn't it lovely?

:04:23. > :04:26.This is THE best day of the Grand Slams, because you have the men and

:04:27. > :04:32.women laying all on one-day. It a feast for everyone. You have just

:04:33. > :04:35.been out on the practice courts, we've got superstars practising

:04:36. > :04:43.everywhere. Murray, on his favourite court. Yeah, he's keeping his

:04:44. > :04:48.routine. It is my favourite day. It is not so brilliant when you've got

:04:49. > :04:51.to make the schedules, you're going to upset some people! It's almost as

:04:52. > :04:57.if you haven't enough show courts. Have got so many a lot of matches. A

:04:58. > :05:04.good day to have a ticket. It certainly is. Being out here, this

:05:05. > :05:09.is where matches are won and lost. This is where it happens. Yesterday

:05:10. > :05:14.I sat right up there in the clubhouse, and think that's the best

:05:15. > :05:19.seat in the house on Sunday, because from 11 o'clock until about two

:05:20. > :05:23.o'clock, you see everybody coming through, and you know someone is

:05:24. > :05:26.coming as in other cameras are focused on them. What I found

:05:27. > :05:32.interesting was how everybody is so different when they practise for

:05:33. > :05:37.their 40 minutes of. Some are more intense than others, I love to see

:05:38. > :05:42.how they try to get their form. And this is where it is different. The

:05:43. > :05:49.other Grand Slams, you play on Sunday, whereas here, you have the

:05:50. > :05:54.day off. The girls and guys can come in here and have a practice, as you

:05:55. > :06:03.say, and the sort of regroup. It is almost like a tournament of two

:06:04. > :06:08.hearts. Tim, you may have your hill here, but I heard from a member that

:06:09. > :06:19.Aorangi Park, before it was called that, was actually a field, and

:06:20. > :06:26.apparently, it was called Barker's Field. I am prepared to go with

:06:27. > :06:31.that! I think it is only fitting, because I played most of my best

:06:32. > :06:35.tennis on the practice courts! Let's have a look at who will be playing

:06:36. > :06:41.today. Offending champion and top seed Andy Murray has won his last 25

:06:42. > :06:47.matches against French players. Benoit Paire will be trying to break

:06:48. > :06:50.that streak today. Jo Konta is aiming to become the first British

:06:51. > :06:57.woman to reach the quarterfinals since 1984. She faces France's

:06:58. > :07:02.Caroline Garcia, who is yet to drop a set in these Championships. Former

:07:03. > :07:07.Queen's Club champion Mahgoub Dimitrov says he's paying better

:07:08. > :07:11.tennis than ever this year. But he will need to be, because he faces

:07:12. > :07:19.the great Roger Federer this afternoon. Teenager Ana Konjuh is

:07:20. > :07:26.the youngest player left in the draw, born in 1997, the year Venus

:07:27. > :07:33.Williams made her Wimbledon debut. Rafa Nadal is yet to drop a set so

:07:34. > :07:40.far this year and he faces fellow left-hander Gilles Muller, who at 34

:07:41. > :07:45.is in the best form of his career. World number one angelic further has

:07:46. > :07:49.had to battle her way into the second week. She plays another

:07:50. > :07:57.former finalist, Djokovic ago rather, who has looked impressive so

:07:58. > :08:02.far. Adrian Mannarino is the lowest ranked player left in the draw and

:08:03. > :08:12.the Frenchman is dangerous on grass. Can he stop Novak reaching the

:08:13. > :08:16.quarterfinals for the ninth time? Those are the matchups, and let's

:08:17. > :08:25.show you where they will be. If you have a ticket for Centre Court...

:08:26. > :08:31.Equally impressive, over 11 court, Jo Konta is first up, followed by

:08:32. > :08:41.Rafa and then Novak. Getting it under way on Court No. 2,

:08:42. > :08:50.the world number one, Angelique Kerber.

:08:51. > :09:06.And on Court No. 3, plenty of experience in that first match. And

:09:07. > :09:10.still it comes. French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, can she cause

:09:11. > :09:10.another big upset, when she takes on the number four seed, Elina

:09:11. > :09:23.Svitolina? And don't forget, you can watch

:09:24. > :09:30.every match and every point across the BBC platforms. Wherever you are,

:09:31. > :09:37.the website, social media, 5 Live, they will keep you up to date as

:09:38. > :09:45.well. Depending on your TV provider, you can watch six matches on the red

:09:46. > :09:50.button. Let's just show you what is happening right now. Because the

:09:51. > :09:55.matches are beginning to get under way. This is out on Court No. 2, and

:09:56. > :10:07.we will be going to this one fairly soon - Angelique

:10:08. > :10:20.Kerber up against Muguruza, who mini people are tipping could be the

:10:21. > :10:30.champion here, including myself! On Court No. 3, they're just completing

:10:31. > :10:41.their warm up. Over on Court Number 12, it's Jelena Ostapenko. Over on

:10:42. > :10:51.Court No. 18, we will be keeping an eye on the only qualifier left in

:10:52. > :10:54.the draw, Petra Martic. It is absolutely exhausting getting

:10:55. > :11:00.through all of those, Tracy! It is all happening, it is incredible. It

:11:01. > :11:04.is, we have Angelique Kerber against Muguruza, the two ladies who lost to

:11:05. > :11:07.Serena Williams in the last two finals, and they are playing in the

:11:08. > :11:11.fourth round, it's mouthwatering. In the bottom half of the glaucoma you

:11:12. > :11:14.have Victoria Azarenka, the mother coming back, and playing against

:11:15. > :11:20.Simona Halep. Think that is an incredible matchup. Azarenka is only

:11:21. > :11:25.in her second tournament back, but she's starting to play. Both of

:11:26. > :11:31.those ladies are former semifinalists. And a huge day for Jo

:11:32. > :11:40.Konta? It is, she has had an impressive first week. She had a

:11:41. > :11:45.fantastic match on Centre Court against Vekic. I feel her form is

:11:46. > :11:48.progressing so nicely. She's serving well, progressive from the back of

:11:49. > :11:54.the court, so hopefully she can continue that for the rest of the

:11:55. > :12:02.week. We came here thinking Kvitova, and then Pliskova, they've both gone

:12:03. > :12:08.out. Let's take a look at the leading ladies now, with Lee

:12:09. > :12:11.McKenzie. This year, it is more wide open than ever. By the end of the

:12:12. > :12:25.second round, over half the women's seeds had fallen. Serena Williams is

:12:26. > :12:29.pregnant, Maria Sharapova absent. No single person is dominating women's

:12:30. > :12:34.tennis, no-one is invincible. The young sharks are circling. They're

:12:35. > :12:38.fearless, with nothing to lose. For the older players, it is their

:12:39. > :12:43.experience that is now their strength. There's so many names in

:12:44. > :12:49.the mix, it is almost like the Grand National. There is no girl where I

:12:50. > :12:55.say, this one will be in the final. It is very hard. It feels that

:12:56. > :12:59.anybody can beat anybody else. There's 16 women left in the draw,

:13:00. > :13:02.and I legitimately think there's ten who have the chance to win the

:13:03. > :13:08.title. As we enter the second week, who are the danger women we should

:13:09. > :13:14.be looking out for? You have Simona Halep Mahut got to the semifinals a

:13:15. > :13:19.couple of years ago. Angelique Kerber has not played that well, but

:13:20. > :13:23.she's fighting her way through. Muguruza, who won the French Open

:13:24. > :13:27.last year, finalist at Wimbledon a couple of years ago. But she has not

:13:28. > :13:31.been consistently playing at the elite level this year create Johanna

:13:32. > :13:37.Konta is being looked at as a favourite here, but she has also

:13:38. > :13:39.been playing very consistently, and I think that's something which could

:13:40. > :13:45.be the difference maker. I think she has every potential to win. An

:13:46. > :13:52.outsider for me would be Coco Vandeweghe, who has a huge serve.

:13:53. > :14:05.Venus Williams I would say still has a lot of weapons in even though

:14:06. > :14:10.she's the oldest woman in the draw. As the five-time former champion,

:14:11. > :14:14.her game can translate, and she can win next Saturday. It is all going

:14:15. > :14:20.to come down to whoever can take the moment and take the extra motivation

:14:21. > :14:23.of knowing, maybe Serena is not here, Sharapova is not here, but I'm

:14:24. > :14:28.good enough to win a Grand Slam. That's what it comes down to, trying

:14:29. > :14:31.to win those seven matches in a row. There is no such thing as a sure

:14:32. > :14:35.thing when it comes to the Grand National, and at Wimbledon, in the

:14:36. > :14:48.ladies this year, it's the same story. It is so exciting, because

:14:49. > :14:54.it's so wide-open? It is, the only former champion you have is Venus,

:14:55. > :14:59.and she's 37. If we look at the top half of the draw first, that's such

:15:00. > :15:09.a tough match for Angelique Kerber against Muguruza. But also, Coco she

:15:10. > :15:17.can blow people off court on grass. She really can. Caroline Wozniacki,

:15:18. > :15:26.an in Gribble story, she was 74 in the world last year, and now, she's

:15:27. > :15:30.back in the top ten. Never been true to the quarterfinals here before.

:15:31. > :15:37.Yeah, not really the game to translate onto this surface. This

:15:38. > :15:42.19-year-old Ana Konjuh is something special, isn't she? She really is.

:15:43. > :15:47.She seems to love grass, and now playing against Venus. Franco wasn't

:15:48. > :15:54.even born when Venus played her first major. She hits the ball so

:15:55. > :15:59.hard and so flat. Jelena Ostapenko wins the French Open, nobody really

:16:00. > :16:03.puts her in as a favourite? She was such an outlier at the French Open,

:16:04. > :16:09.number 47 in the world when she won. Fearless, just turned 20, and she's

:16:10. > :16:13.continuing on this path of winning these 3-set matches and playing with

:16:14. > :16:17.such mental toughness. She's someone you have got to pay attention to,

:16:18. > :16:23.because I think grass is a better service for her than clay, because

:16:24. > :16:26.she hits so hard and flat. Simona Halep, Tim, she's quite small,

:16:27. > :16:33.compared to some of the other women. She is, but again, she's a great

:16:34. > :16:37.ball striker, and works with Darren Cave Hill. Darren is someone I've

:16:38. > :16:40.known for a long time. I spoke to him before the tournament and he

:16:41. > :16:45.said she was still struggling to get over the French Open final, but the

:16:46. > :16:48.best way to get over that is to get back on court and through to the

:16:49. > :16:53.second week. I don't think there is the same level of focus on her heavy

:16:54. > :17:00.she is the world number two. I would like to see her go through. We have

:17:01. > :17:07.been discussing the women. Now, we can join Phil Jones to have a look

:17:08. > :17:14.at the men. Week one, and the famous four started firing. In week two, it

:17:15. > :17:19.is time for them to go into overdrive. We are not sure if the

:17:20. > :17:26.champion is in full working order. Second seed Novak Djokovic seems to

:17:27. > :17:32.be back near his finely tuned best as he pursues a fourth Wimbledon

:17:33. > :17:36.title. Rafa Nadal, seeded fourth, has found the straightest of roads

:17:37. > :17:40.into the second week for sub a relaxed Rafa is a dangerous Rafa.

:17:41. > :17:44.Roger Federer is polling, hardly troubled so far. And if anyone knows

:17:45. > :17:53.how to accelerate through the gears, Federer does. It is Grigor Dimitrov

:17:54. > :17:58.up next for the Swiss great. Can the Bulgarian who shocked Andy Murray

:17:59. > :18:03.here three years ago derail one of the big four once more? Milos Raonic

:18:04. > :18:11.has funded his way into the second week, his serve in excellent working

:18:12. > :18:17.order. But he will have a tough game against Alexander Zverev, tipped as

:18:18. > :18:22.a future champion. Marin Cilic, three wins, no sets dropped and

:18:23. > :18:28.showing the requisite engineering for a title push. He looks fast, fit

:18:29. > :18:33.and focused. Austrian Dominic Keane was unsure whether he had the wheels

:18:34. > :18:40.for grass. But the French Open semifinalist looks to have adapted

:18:41. > :18:49.well to this to range of it is time to put pedal to the metal in pursuit

:18:50. > :18:52.of the ultimate prize. Tim, discuss! It is amazing, you look at all these

:18:53. > :18:58.matchups, and there's some good ones. I can't see anything else

:18:59. > :19:03.other than the big four. That's not necessarily going out on a limb! It

:19:04. > :19:10.will be either Federer, Nadal, Murray or Djokovic! Certainly

:19:11. > :19:14.Federer and no doubt, their level was outstanding in the first week.

:19:15. > :19:17.Murray, a bit similar to the French Open, where he came in without any

:19:18. > :19:23.great form, but has got through his matches. Again, I think he will come

:19:24. > :19:29.through today against Benoit Paire. I think Raonic against Zverev will

:19:30. > :19:35.be very, very interesting. Two huge servers. Raonic has got grass court

:19:36. > :19:46.pedigree but Zverev is hugely promising. Has not dropped a set,

:19:47. > :19:52.either. Lefty against lefty, you don't see that so often. Gilles

:19:53. > :19:57.Muller has had a great grass court season, but I don't see him winning,

:19:58. > :20:00.I think he could get a set but I think Rafa is playing too well.

:20:01. > :20:07.Hitting the ball so aggressively, serving well. Easy on the eye,

:20:08. > :20:11.Grigor Dimitrov against Roger Federer, similar styles.

:20:12. > :20:20.Technically, easy on the eye! Absolutely! Just to clear that up!

:20:21. > :20:26.But again, I think they've got very similar styles, they've both got all

:20:27. > :20:36.the shots, but I just think Federer is a better version right now. Is --

:20:37. > :20:42.Grigor Dimitrov started the year off so well, it is good to see him back

:20:43. > :20:51.on track, he hasn't lost a set. You mentioned easy on the eye, but they

:20:52. > :21:03.are not easy on the ear, as we found out!

:21:04. > :21:09.# Never let you go! # After all that we've been through

:21:10. > :21:24.# I will make it up to you # I promise... Cut! Stick to tennis!

:21:25. > :21:29.I think we've heard enough! On the piano is Tommy Haas's father-in-law.

:21:30. > :21:35.What do you think of that, Tim? I think we can safely say, don't give

:21:36. > :21:38.up the day job. But it also goes to show how good the technology is,

:21:39. > :21:44.because that has definitely been enhanced. Do you think? Without

:21:45. > :21:50.doubt! Let's take a look at the stats going into this second week,

:21:51. > :21:52.how many seeds are left. Well, there are 13 in both the men's draw and

:21:53. > :22:09.the women Straw. Seven of those titles on the women's

:22:10. > :22:19.side belong to Venus Williams. 14 nations represented in the fourth

:22:20. > :22:23.round. Any surprises, what do you see today, maybe Coco Vandeweghe,

:22:24. > :22:29.what do you think? I'm just excited to sit back and watch it all unfold.

:22:30. > :22:36.There are so many matches on the lower courts as well. So many stars,

:22:37. > :22:43.they really have to spread them out. Certainly, Coco Vandeweghe against

:22:44. > :22:48.Wozniacki is a popular match -- a popcorn match. What is a popcorn

:22:49. > :22:53.match? Just something to watch. Muguruza has been playing much

:22:54. > :22:57.better, and she has not been to the final of any tournament since

:22:58. > :23:05.winning the French Open last year. That's not really handling the

:23:06. > :23:10.attention very well. And yet, this tournament, Conchita Martinez in the

:23:11. > :23:13.box with her, she seems to be a little bit,. She hasn't lost a set.

:23:14. > :23:21.When she dialled in, she's very tough to beat. Angelique Kerber,

:23:22. > :23:27.number one in the world, in danger of losing that ranking. She fought

:23:28. > :23:32.her way through the last ground, so maybe she will find confidence from

:23:33. > :23:39.that. Lots of popcorn matches in the men's, and big servers as well, Sam

:23:40. > :23:44.Querrey against Kevin Anderson! Yeah, there are going to be a couple

:23:45. > :23:48.of tie-breaks there. Hopefully someone breaks in the fifth,

:23:49. > :23:53.otherwise we could be here for a couple of days with that one! But

:23:54. > :23:57.outside of the top four, I'm interested in Raonic against Zverev,

:23:58. > :24:04.we've got Raonic warming up just over there. Two players who play

:24:05. > :24:11.very well on grass, another one to watch out for. And Zverev, 20 years

:24:12. > :24:20.of age, he's had a fantastic year, winning Rome, getting through to the

:24:21. > :24:24.finals at Halle, a number one in waiting. Absolutely, there is no

:24:25. > :24:31.doubt in my mind. He's looking to the long-term, working with Andy's

:24:32. > :24:34.former fitness trainer. He said, let's give this two years. You have

:24:35. > :24:40.the fundamentals, you hit the ball so well. But you're 6ft 6ins,

:24:41. > :24:45.needing to add a bit more muscle. And so they slowly got him at it,

:24:46. > :24:50.without a lot of pressure, slowly he's moved up the rankings. You look

:24:51. > :24:54.at him, with all the weapons, you think, future number one. Briefly,

:24:55. > :25:01.Benoit Paire, plays Andy Murray today, a difficult opponent? Yeah,

:25:02. > :25:05.expect the unexpected. He's got that French flair, no doubt about it. An

:25:06. > :25:11.unbelievable to hand it back and, a Shakey forehand, and over five sets,

:25:12. > :25:16.I think Andy will be too good. He could get a set, but I see Murray

:25:17. > :25:24.coming through. That makes us feel very good! Thank you very much, both

:25:25. > :25:28.of you! We have been loving the sunshine, but I watched Carol

:25:29. > :25:37.Kirkwood this morning, and she mentioned me at least twice today...

:25:38. > :25:42.Today, we have a lovely moment, 22 Celsius, blue skies. Up until one

:25:43. > :25:49.o'clock, there is a 20% risk of showers. Up to six at this evening,

:25:50. > :25:56.the risk does up to about 30%. But that still means there is a 70%

:25:57. > :26:02.chance it could stay dry. Moving into the evening, the risk

:26:03. > :26:04.diminishes once again, and temperature comes down a little bit.

:26:05. > :26:10.Tomorrow, it is quite a different story. We will start the day cloudy

:26:11. > :26:13.with splashes of rain. And as we go through the day, especially from

:26:14. > :26:19.mid-afternoon onwards, there is the risk of some heavy and persistent

:26:20. > :26:23.rain. That risk is 80%, so not so good. But on Wednesday, the rain

:26:24. > :26:30.fears and the sun comes back out, Sue. We will go with those

:26:31. > :26:38.percentages, 70% it's going to be dry today! We will be keeping you

:26:39. > :26:43.up-to-date with all the matches in the last 16, but we're heading out

:26:44. > :26:46.to Court No. 2 to see the world number one Angelique Kerber,

:26:47. > :26:49.surprisingly has not won title this year. But she playing well, up

:26:50. > :26:56.against another former runner-up, Muguruza. It is on serve in the

:26:57. > :26:57.first set. Let's join our commentators, Louise Pleming,

:26:58. > :27:14.alongside Chris Brunt and. A repeat of the match they played

:27:15. > :27:16.against each other here in the third round two years ago, when Muguruza

:27:17. > :27:53.made the final. Such a big match, big names, playing

:27:54. > :28:24.early in a Grand Slam, fourth round. Just missing that one, Angelique

:28:25. > :28:27.Kerber, but I like how she's going into that forehand of Muguruza, and

:28:28. > :28:29.then looking for the backhand down the line, to get her out of

:28:30. > :28:49.position. Called out. No challenge. Angelique

:28:50. > :28:51.Kerber challenge on the very first point of the match, and got it

:28:52. > :29:24.wrong. There's couple of things we will be

:29:25. > :29:28.looking for today, to see what Muguruza can do, and one of those

:29:29. > :29:33.is, how many times can she come forward off the right ball? On this

:29:34. > :29:39.one, Angelique Kerber had too much time. She's got the options, to go

:29:40. > :30:22.crosscourt, or to use the lob. Again has to be careful op which

:30:23. > :30:40.ball she's going to move forward on, because Kerber is ready.

:30:41. > :30:49.Poor positioning. That's the other thing that Kerber needs to take care

:30:50. > :30:55.of. That creates opportunities for Muguruza. Two things I'm really

:30:56. > :30:57.focussing on is the amount of times forwards and how far Kerber is

:30:58. > :31:23.behind that baseline. There's amazing presence on court -

:31:24. > :31:25.this woman - regal. Yes, all attitude, isn't it? Terrific

:31:26. > :31:40.attitude. Just over 4,000 seats - a full

:31:41. > :32:07.house, pretty much full. That's where Kerber must take some

:32:08. > :32:14.risks today. She has to be the one that's going to change up the flight

:32:15. > :32:16.of the ball. She has to go down the flight of the line more often today

:32:17. > :32:49.than Muguruza. It is a little breezy, but nothing

:32:50. > :33:21.serious. A lot of clarity about Muguruza, how

:33:22. > :33:25.she has to play today. She's clear of the game-plan. Can she continue

:33:26. > :34:19.to execute it as well as she's in the past?

:34:20. > :34:39.Now, what is fascinating, is you have said Louise, is how often will

:34:40. > :34:44.Muguruza come forward to the net? She did it a lot against Kerber

:34:45. > :34:49.here. No question about it. In 2015, I remember seeing her come forwards

:34:50. > :34:54.about 72, 73 times, which is phenomenal. Can just notice here

:34:55. > :34:57.where the hit point is in comparison. Hugely different from

:34:58. > :35:02.Muguruza. The amount of times she can get inside that baseline and

:35:03. > :35:08.limit the time that two metres behind. Look where Kerber is

:35:09. > :35:11.tracking. That is opening up opportunities for Muguruza to go

:35:12. > :35:17.through the three-quarter part of the court. It is an interesting

:35:18. > :35:21.stat. That conversation must have been had with Kerber. She has to be

:35:22. > :35:29.able to redirect the balls from Muguruza and take time away.

:35:30. > :35:36.Second stint in the Kerber corner. Do you agree with that? Totally. I

:35:37. > :35:41.think when Muguruza first came to our attention is when she beat

:35:42. > :35:47.Serena Williams at the French Open, 2014. 6-2, 6-2. She did it by taking

:35:48. > :35:51.the returns in early. She beat her again, obviously n the final here.

:35:52. > :36:16.Lost to her in the final here two years ago.

:36:17. > :36:34.These stats are interesting though, This young lady does not cruise

:36:35. > :36:42.through the court as much as Muguruza. She needs that assistance

:36:43. > :36:49.by standing up closer. To create power - good play again

:36:50. > :39:37.from Muguruza. Well, that is exactly what Muguruza

:39:38. > :39:42.does not like. She does not want to be the one backhand of Kerber,

:39:43. > :41:10.pushing her around the court. She wants to dictate.

:41:11. > :41:16.Eight unforced error from Muguruza, from one from Kerber. Does has to

:41:17. > :41:37.get the balance right, Muguruza. Martinez looks more nervous than the

:41:38. > :41:42.two players - the former champion. Too much time again for the pass.

:41:43. > :42:29.Here is the first break point. That is the reason why Muguruza must

:42:30. > :42:34.come in on the backhand side. When you are tracking across on the

:42:35. > :42:42.backhand side you cannot see your opponent coming in on the forehand,

:42:43. > :42:47.it's a different -- coming in. On the forehand, it's a different

:42:48. > :42:52.story. Interesting.

:42:53. > :43:00.Didn't even look up. She may be expecting it.

:43:01. > :43:10.20 seconds between points allowed. UMPIRE: Advantage Miss Muguruza.

:43:11. > :43:25.It is moving to 25 minutes from next year, men and women, in all events.

:43:26. > :43:31.First mini-battle is won by Muguruza. Leads first set.

:43:32. > :43:38.SUE BARKER: What a tight match this is on court number two. On this busy

:43:39. > :43:42.day we will take you around the grounds. On court 12 Jelena

:43:43. > :43:46.Ostapenko, a break of serve up. She was two breaks of serve up. So

:43:47. > :43:55.Svitolina had one back. That match is on the red button. And on the BBC

:43:56. > :44:01.Sport website. On court number three, Kuznetsova is serving for the

:44:02. > :44:05.first set against Radwanska. Such a versatile player, Svetlana and

:44:06. > :44:11.always tough to beat. She's on the BBC Sport website. On court 18

:44:12. > :44:17.Magdalena Rybarikova. She has just broken back. So it is back on serve,

:44:18. > :44:24.4-4 against Petra Martic, the only unseeded match in the last 16. We

:44:25. > :44:28.will keep you up-to-date with that. And you may not know who that man

:44:29. > :44:35.is, but you will know him very well by the end of the afternoon because

:44:36. > :44:40.he will face Andy Murray. That is Benoit Paire, from France.

:44:41. > :44:44.So, that match second on Centre Court. There are wonderful matches

:44:45. > :44:50.all day long. We've so much to get through. You can find it on our BBC

:44:51. > :44:52.platforms, the app, 5 Live. Wherever you are, you can follow Wimbledon

:44:53. > :45:15.today. Hawk-Eye tells us that Muguruza was

:45:16. > :45:33.up to 28 seconds between every point in that last game.

:45:34. > :45:45.Close! I think the crowd were encouraging the challenge there.

:45:46. > :46:32.This is the third part of game for Muguruza which she needs to take

:46:33. > :46:34.care of. That backhand down-the-line can do damage today. She can hit

:46:35. > :46:49.that on a dime. She really wants this game,

:46:50. > :47:16.Muguruza. Dealing with love to break right here.

:47:17. > :47:26.She needs to take care of how many errors she's going to play today.

:47:27. > :47:39.Literally hitting a brick wall, Kerber.

:47:40. > :47:51.Looking to get after the second serve.

:47:52. > :48:18.Wonderful memories for Conchita. Champion here, '94.

:48:19. > :48:27.Phenomenal tennis now. Terrific improvising from Kerber. Again just

:48:28. > :48:32.showing what a brick wall she is. How good her defensive skills are. A

:48:33. > :48:34.tough smash there from Muguruza. Nerves of steel. Really let that get

:48:35. > :48:54.low. But executing... Missed it.

:48:55. > :49:02.It did look wide. UMPIRE: The ball was called out.

:49:03. > :49:38.Huk eye is busy. -- Hawk-Eye is busy.

:49:39. > :49:50.APPLAUSE A super battle. The contrast.

:49:51. > :49:54.Again, for me, Muguruza has to be particularly careful which side she

:49:55. > :49:58.comes in. You can just see Kerber - her chest is open to the court on

:49:59. > :50:00.that forehand. She can see her opponent coming in and attacking.

:50:01. > :50:36.That gives her options. 7-13 now going forwards. Already up

:50:37. > :50:42.to 13. She knows it will be tricky. Kerber's so good at making it

:50:43. > :50:45.awkward. Will she keep doing it? Can she beat Kerber from the back of

:50:46. > :51:29.the court? And she will continue to. This is a

:51:30. > :51:32.good point, but Muguruza, the last couple of volleys, she's just let

:51:33. > :51:35.that ball drop a little bit. She needs to keep moving in on top of

:51:36. > :51:48.the net. Two of her four aces have been that

:51:49. > :52:07.one. Just missing. She wants to be the aggressive

:52:08. > :52:13.player out there. But she is, at times, just a little impatient,

:52:14. > :52:15.Muguruza. Those numbers are starting to rack

:52:16. > :52:45.up a little for the Spaniard. That's the side that will make more

:52:46. > :52:52.errors. She's in some trouble.

:52:53. > :53:53.Two more break points for Kerber. Of course, Louise, finalist for the

:53:54. > :53:57.last two years, these two. But a fourth round this year, mainly

:53:58. > :54:01.because Muguruza has slipped down the ranking, struggling to find a

:54:02. > :54:05.game. They both have that in common, haven't they? Absolutely. After

:54:06. > :54:14.success. Yes. You have to wonder what it is - is it a little mental

:54:15. > :54:18.fatigue for Kerber who goes day in, day out, competing at the highest

:54:19. > :54:22.level. Like a Djokovic, who is just so pure with the way they play.

:54:23. > :54:28.Their mentality is tough. They just always turn up. I think ticking

:54:29. > :54:34.every box day-to-day wears you out. I think it is just a little mental

:54:35. > :54:38.debris we have seen from Kerber over the last six months. I think she'll

:54:39. > :54:44.definitely push through it. She's such a great competitor. It is like

:54:45. > :54:52.building a business. Building it is easy. Staying there, it's much more

:54:53. > :54:56.difficult. What has Kerber improved in her game since being world number

:54:57. > :55:01.one? Is there anything? She has to take care of a few things. I don't

:55:02. > :55:03.know that she's improved anything. She has to be careful about where

:55:04. > :55:17.she stands. It is a stunning day again in SW 19.

:55:18. > :55:43.Kerber serving for the first set. I think today Kerber needs to

:55:44. > :55:57.continually be not reluctant in going down-the-line. She has to

:55:58. > :56:20.You have to wonder is Muguruza getting in two minds - am I getting

:56:21. > :56:31.too aggressive? Am I making too many errors? Such a fine balance.

:56:32. > :57:03.Needs a lot more of that. Particularly off the second serve.

:57:04. > :57:08.Did everything absolutely correctly there Muguruza. Came in on the back

:57:09. > :57:14.end side. Could just see that ball sitting up. Takes a good swing at

:57:15. > :57:30.this one, then lets that ball drop. Two set points.

:57:31. > :57:35.Has to trust herself, Muguruza. Kerber's great at making her

:57:36. > :57:41.opponent self-doubt. That's been missing too much today,

:57:42. > :58:28.that shot. Well done!

:58:29. > :58:33.APPLAUSE first set in 43 minutes.

:58:34. > :58:39.SUE BARKER: Angelique Kerber, such a good match player. We will be back

:58:40. > :58:44.with this match. It is a busy day here and for Andy Murray, second on

:58:45. > :58:49.Centre Court. Johanna Konta is out as well.

:58:50. > :58:55.Jo was out on a practise court earlier today.

:58:56. > :59:04.Konta has a tough opponent today. It is 2-2 in the head-to-head. Yes, a

:59:05. > :59:09.very tricky match. Garcia won 7-6 in the final set. A lot of tension in

:59:10. > :59:14.it. Garcia came off court saying she played the better points in the

:59:15. > :59:18.tie-break that bit better. Garcia has a big serve, big ground strokes

:59:19. > :59:23.and aggressive return of serve. In many ways you could say she's

:59:24. > :59:28.similar to Johanna Konta, although I would say Johanna Konta does

:59:29. > :59:33.everything a little bit better. The sound from the strings of Konta's

:59:34. > :59:37.ball it sounds good. She's been in incredible form of late. She's never

:59:38. > :59:42.got to the second week of Wimbledon. How much more will the pressure will

:59:43. > :59:47.building inside her? No question it will be building. She has all these

:59:48. > :59:52.kind of processes, formulas and a mind set she applies to every single

:59:53. > :59:58.match. I think that is what has impressed everybody. We all want to

:59:59. > :00:02.know what is going on. She gives nothing away. She takes care of what

:00:03. > :00:05.she's doing on her side of the court and does not worry about the option.

:00:06. > :00:09.She only worries about what she can control. At the moment, whatever

:00:10. > :00:18.that formula is, it is definitely working. It certainly is. Thank you.

:00:19. > :00:27.Svetlana Kuznetsova has taken the first set against Eiger Radwanska.

:00:28. > :00:28.Jelena Ostapenko has also taken the first set of her match against

:00:29. > :00:52.Svitolina. Back we go. Louise, you do a lot of coaching,

:00:53. > :00:55.what would you have said to Muguruza at that sit down? She's got to find

:00:56. > :01:31.bigger targets, just be patient. It's that self-doubt. Be she's just

:01:32. > :01:33.not executing at the net. It is, it's a little self-doubt and

:01:34. > :01:48.frustration as well. Playing nowhere near as much

:01:49. > :02:07.doubles, these days, the gurus at - is that hurting her now?

:02:08. > :02:14.I would love to see the difference, when she comes in on the backhand

:02:15. > :02:22.side, how many times she will converting, as opposed to on the

:02:23. > :02:27.forehand side. She furnished 2015 at number three, I wonder what an!

:02:28. > :02:44.Martinez thinks about the singles-doubles combo.

:02:45. > :03:10.It's interesting, it's a completely different complexion from 2015.

:03:11. > :05:12.Right now, Muguruza would have won that first set.

:05:13. > :05:23.Winning three quarters of the points behind this solid first serve. This

:05:24. > :05:31.is just the tenth second serve she's had to hit.

:05:32. > :05:37.And they do come. Especially when opponents get on to

:05:38. > :05:58.her second serve. What I think Kerber likes about this

:05:59. > :06:02.match is the fact that she's the number one player in the world, and

:06:03. > :06:07.she's been carrying so much expectation over the last 12 months,

:06:08. > :06:10.I think this match she would possibly even feel like the

:06:11. > :06:19.underdog. It has taken a lot of pressure off her, and she's playing

:06:20. > :06:22.some great tennis. That's a part of her tennis she has not coped with,

:06:23. > :06:45.the mental side since becoming world number one.

:06:46. > :06:50.Last year, three Grand Slam finals, winning two of them. It was always

:06:51. > :07:18.going to be something to follow! Beating Serena at the Australian,

:07:19. > :07:56.losing to her at the US Open. Again, Kerber is just so solid. Her

:07:57. > :09:39.placement is so efficient. Just trying to press that little bit

:09:40. > :10:10.too much, Garbine Muguruza. Another break point.

:10:11. > :10:15.You win Grand Slams, you become the number one player in the world, and

:10:16. > :10:19.your coaching team says, what can we improve quality you look at Kebede

:10:20. > :10:32.she really hasn't improved that much. In fact her game, mentally,

:10:33. > :10:36.has fallen apart somewhat. Great serving from Muguruza. You look at a

:10:37. > :10:41.player like Ana Ivanovic, wins the French, comes the number one player

:10:42. > :10:44.in the world, and they were thinking, what can we improve? And

:10:45. > :10:56.that took so much confidence away from her.

:10:57. > :11:03.Emerging, you're the number one player in the world, you've won a

:11:04. > :11:07.Grand Slam, and you need to go back to, I need to get better. And she

:11:08. > :11:26.didn't take that conversation well at all.

:11:27. > :11:42.Fantastic hold, Muguruza leads 2-1, second set. This is a real battle.

:11:43. > :11:46.We will be right back with that. SUE BARKER: We are going to update

:11:47. > :11:51.you know with what is going on elsewhere. Kuznetsova took the first

:11:52. > :11:56.set, but it's on serving the second. They have just had a marathon game,

:11:57. > :12:02.lasting over ten minutes Radwanska saving four break points. That match

:12:03. > :12:08.is on the red button and on the website. And also, on Court Number

:12:09. > :12:18.12, Jelena Ostapenko, she's just faced a break point against

:12:19. > :12:20.Svitolina. It's 2-2 in the second. Over on Court No. 18, they have had

:12:21. > :12:47.a break apiece in the second set. Deep in thought, Muguruza, that was

:12:48. > :13:32.a good hold, saving the break point in the last game.

:13:33. > :13:35.Again, that's where she is really hurting herself today, those

:13:36. > :14:02.unforced errors. And now Angelique Kerber has made

:14:03. > :14:27.one. She's been so solid off that win today.

:14:28. > :14:50.Sometimes you wish you could merge a counterpuncher with a big striker

:14:51. > :15:02.into one, and you've got the perfect player! Yes!

:15:03. > :15:12.That's where you've got to be really careful, as a coach. The message you

:15:13. > :15:19.give to your athlete, some players take things in extremes and some

:15:20. > :15:23.take the message very subtly. For me, today, Muguruza has taken it a

:15:24. > :15:27.little bit too far on the extreme side of things. Because she needs to

:15:28. > :15:31.be aggressive, but she also needs to build the point. She's been a bit

:15:32. > :15:48.too aggressive. Like that. Yeah, and that is the art

:15:49. > :15:53.of coaching, being able to know how your athlete absorbs things, their

:15:54. > :16:01.personality. She's getting more and more uptight! It's not an easy job!

:16:02. > :16:14.It's much easier to play, I think she's thinking right now!

:16:15. > :16:16.She has shown America enormous amount of emotion on court,

:16:17. > :17:04.Muguruza. Should have made it, really. If you

:17:05. > :17:10.start missing so many volleys... Sheep tracks this perfectly, but

:17:11. > :17:11.again, everything starts to tighten up a little bit when you start

:17:12. > :17:49.missing so many. 12 out of 25. I was just going to say before that

:17:50. > :17:53.point, Chris, Muguruza, if she's to come forward, she had to set up the

:17:54. > :18:03.pattern into the forehand to open up the backhand, and then move

:18:04. > :18:33.forwards. If she doesn't do that, she's a sitting duck for Kerber.

:18:34. > :18:50.CHRIS BRADNAM: Was that panic? LOUISE PLEMING: Yeah, I think so. It

:18:51. > :18:56.feels like she can't compete from the back, she's not as solid, she's

:18:57. > :19:00.missing too many points today. Just not timing it quite right there,

:19:01. > :19:19.Muguruza. It is a very, very one day again. It

:19:20. > :19:23.has been building up for the last two or three days. They do an

:19:24. > :20:04.amazing job, it does occasionally happen.

:20:05. > :20:56.It's a crowd pleaser! Well, this will help Garbine, just being able

:20:57. > :20:58.to put this one away, get back some confidence that she's got the right

:20:59. > :21:13.game plan. Another break point saved for

:21:14. > :21:39.Muguruza. Just going back to the point chairs

:21:40. > :21:42.we see Muguruza moving forward beautifully onto this one, I asked

:21:43. > :21:45.Martina Navratilova not long ago her thoughts on the fact that top

:21:46. > :21:51.singles players slavery little doubles these days. Martina played

:21:52. > :21:54.all of it, in days when the prize money was nothing like today, her

:21:55. > :22:00.opinion was, play both, especially as Muguruza did so well playing both

:22:01. > :22:04.two years ago, but play less tournaments. Your thoughts? Because

:22:05. > :22:10.it is the way she plays, she loves to come forwards? I see the

:22:11. > :22:14.argument. I think for a player like Garbine Muguruza, it is a fine line.

:22:15. > :22:19.For the big hitters, I feel the players who play with more power,

:22:20. > :22:21.they need to play a little bit more often to keep the momentum and

:22:22. > :22:34.confidence. But look at the change here now. Angelique Kerber in 2015,

:22:35. > :22:42.40 5% up inside the court. I should take a step back there. This is the

:22:43. > :22:48.comparison, and she is up in the court, no question about it. It has

:22:49. > :22:53.been Kerber that has been stepping back and HER contact point has been

:22:54. > :23:17.further back in the court. Muguruza has just made too many errors.

:23:18. > :23:27.But I think that's a good point, Martina Navratilova thinking it is a

:23:28. > :23:30.good idea to play singles and doubles, there is no question, it

:23:31. > :23:53.does help the movement forward, it keeps you sharper at the net.

:23:54. > :23:57.Back in behind the movement of Kerber. She loves to run open court,

:23:58. > :24:24.Kerber. She keeps coming back! She has got a

:24:25. > :24:34.tracking device on that like it, hasn't she, Chris?! Phenomenal

:24:35. > :24:50.mover. When you see players practising

:24:51. > :25:22.against a wall for three hours... Just pushing that forehand wide,

:25:23. > :25:26.she's so frustrated with herself, Muguruza, she can hardly believe it.

:25:27. > :25:46.She said she wasn't happy with her forehand in that first match.

:25:47. > :25:52.But you talk about a brick wall, Chris, and so many of the past

:25:53. > :25:56.champions have all practised on a brick wall. Martina Navratilova

:25:57. > :26:01.always talks about how she played against a brick wall. Roger Federer,

:26:02. > :26:05.and unfortunately around our countryside, we're losing those

:26:06. > :26:11.brick walls, they're being knocked down partially in Australia. Juniors

:26:12. > :26:14.always used to play on them, especially at busy times, because

:26:15. > :26:16.they had no right of way on the courts, the adults were on them.

:26:17. > :26:30.Yeah. The court has shrunk, Kerber has

:26:31. > :26:35.done that to Muguruza, she's made her feel like a postage stamp. Shame

:26:36. > :26:36.that quick, that good at anticipating where you're going to

:26:37. > :27:08.hit the ball. Muguruza has felt the pressure to be

:27:09. > :27:13.more aggressive, trying to take time away from her opponent. She's hit a

:27:14. > :27:38.lot of winners today, but it has really been negated by the errors.

:27:39. > :27:51.That's nice. Just being a bit more steady in her rallies, to wait for

:27:52. > :27:52.the right shot. To use these backhand - the backhand is really on

:27:53. > :28:37.today. It's her first break point. That's a gruelling point. It is

:28:38. > :28:41.about 25, 36 Celsius at the moment, in the shade - there's not a lot of

:28:42. > :28:56.it on this court. That's right. You can just see both

:28:57. > :29:26.players just taking a little extra time.

:29:27. > :29:36.SUE BARKER: What a match this is, such high quality tennis. We're

:29:37. > :29:41.going to move away from it, though. Jo Konta will be walking out on

:29:42. > :29:46.Court No. 1 in a moment. You can continue to watch this match,

:29:47. > :29:50.though, on the website or on the red button. Elsewhere, Jelena Ostapenko

:29:51. > :29:53.is out on Court Number 12, just one game away, in fact just two points,

:29:54. > :30:01.away from going through to the quarterfinals. That's a feature

:30:02. > :30:09.match on the red button. Over on Court No. 3, Svetlana Kuznetsova has

:30:10. > :30:13.just broken Agnieszka Radwanska. That's also on the red button and on

:30:14. > :30:23.the BBC Sport website. Over on Court No. 18, it is the qualifier Martic,

:30:24. > :30:25.the qualifier, who has taken the second set. That one is also on the

:30:26. > :30:39.website. You can probably hear a big cheer,

:30:40. > :30:45.Johanna Konta coming out to take on Garcia, through to the second week

:30:46. > :30:48.of Wimbledon for the first time. A big welcome. Not a big crowd on

:30:49. > :30:56.Court One but still a big welcome for Britain's number one.

:30:57. > :31:04.That was just a short time ago and Tracy Austin is standing with me out

:31:05. > :31:09.on Court Number One. This is a tricky match for Johanna Konta. It

:31:10. > :31:15.is, Caroline Garcia plays well on grass, she did well last year and

:31:16. > :31:18.has had a good year so far, Grand Slam quarterfinals in her home

:31:19. > :31:21.country, that is a breakthrough for her, second week of a Grand Slam for

:31:22. > :31:26.the second Grand Slam, she must be full of confidence. I've got to

:31:27. > :31:31.think that contest, she is playing so well, I've been really impressed

:31:32. > :31:34.with where she has come so quickly. Only two or three years ago she was

:31:35. > :31:38.outside the top 100, we didn't really know who Johanna Konta was

:31:39. > :31:43.and as of last year she broke into the top ten and seems to be managing

:31:44. > :31:46.the whole situation beautifully. This is a lot because for Caroline

:31:47. > :31:51.Garcia she has lots of pressure playing in the French Open but she

:31:52. > :31:54.can share the pressure with Mladenovic and Cornet and a few

:31:55. > :31:58.other French women. For Johanna Konta, Heather played well but it's

:31:59. > :32:01.pretty much all on Johanna Konta's shoulders. They are getting ready

:32:02. > :32:05.for the coin toss. You talked about how Johanna Konta has improved, she

:32:06. > :32:09.got a sports psychologist involved a few years ago. Mentally she has

:32:10. > :32:14.evolved and improved but she keeps on improving all of her game, the

:32:15. > :32:17.big backhand has improved and her movement has really improved. She

:32:18. > :32:20.has gotten stronger, she's become a better athlete and always had a good

:32:21. > :32:24.backhand, especially across the court but the forehand could be

:32:25. > :32:29.brittle so she could rely on that stroke much more now. It all comes

:32:30. > :32:33.back to... It is a weapon now. It is but it all comes back to the

:32:34. > :32:37.mentality and that sports psychologist. She can really trust

:32:38. > :32:41.herself in the big moments and we saw that in the second round here

:32:42. > :32:44.against Donna Vekic. That was a tight match and lots of British

:32:45. > :32:49.people became fans of Johanna Konta the way she was able to handle that

:32:50. > :32:52.situation. Vekic played incredible tennis, so powerful, both young

:32:53. > :32:56.ladies serving big, and that's probably the biggest weapon Johanna

:32:57. > :33:02.Konta has, her serve, her ability to serve her way out of trouble.

:33:03. > :33:06.Caroline Garcia's Selt doesn't look the best, it is stuttering as a

:33:07. > :33:10.service motion but that is a weapon too. It is stilted and kind of

:33:11. > :33:14.manufactured but again she is a great athlete. In fact Andy Murray

:33:15. > :33:18.about six years ago, when Garcia beat Sharapova at the French Open

:33:19. > :33:21.and Andy Murray Tuohy did, not sure, it was a good tweet in the end

:33:22. > :33:24.because it put pressure on Garcia but he tweeted about the fact that

:33:25. > :33:28.this is a future world number one. It's interesting because the mental

:33:29. > :33:33.part is what Garcia has struggled with as well, when got a big moments

:33:34. > :33:38.she would kind of flinch and blink at the big moments. She has just

:33:39. > :33:42.started, she won the French Open in doubles last year with Mladenovic, a

:33:43. > :33:44.big win in her home country. May be playing on the big stage there and

:33:45. > :33:49.finally getting through has kind of loosened her up. That is Caroline

:33:50. > :33:53.Garcia up against John Konta, certainly enjoying her time on the

:33:54. > :33:57.grass. Didn't do well at Birmingham, Edgbaston but came good at

:33:58. > :34:04.Eastbourne playing well and the first week she has been impressive.

:34:05. > :34:07.Let's see her story so far. COMMENTATOR: Welcome to Court One,

:34:08. > :34:16.Johanna Konta, British 11, world number seven, high hopes for her. --

:34:17. > :34:21.British number one. She has to break now and she has the double break in

:34:22. > :34:29.this first set. Very businesslike performance from Johanna Konta. A

:34:30. > :34:33.challenge from chez Siu Wai and it's an ace to win the match for Johanna

:34:34. > :34:40.Konta and it's a very tidy and impressive performance. -- she Siu

:34:41. > :34:51.Wai. Vekic now in the driving seat in the opening set. What a comeback,

:34:52. > :34:55.Konta takes the opening set 7-6. It is long. What a fightback from

:34:56. > :35:02.Croatia's Donna Vekic, she levels the match and takes the second set.

:35:03. > :35:09.It is supercompetitive out there. Fabulous combination hitting. Donna

:35:10. > :35:17.Vekic takes a little tumble. Konta is composed as ever and hangs on.

:35:18. > :35:27.What a battle and what resilience. Well played. First set to the

:35:28. > :35:31.British number one. Jo Konta, three down, four to go. To end 40 years of

:35:32. > :35:41.you know what. We certainly know what, do we? It

:35:42. > :35:44.was interesting, I read about her coach who writes down the tactics

:35:45. > :35:51.and makes her learn them and then recite them to him before she goes

:35:52. > :35:54.on the court just so it is in the brain. It's important as an athlete

:35:55. > :35:59.to know what is the best way for you to get in your zone. When I used to

:36:00. > :36:04.play I used to write things I needed to do down and keep looking at them.

:36:05. > :36:07.For Johanna Konta she worked with that mental coach and she knows what

:36:08. > :36:11.she must do to feel comfortable and relaxed when she goes out to be in

:36:12. > :36:14.her comfort zone. He wasn't happy with the tie-break she played

:36:15. > :36:20.against Garcia in Indian Wells earlier this year when she lost a

:36:21. > :36:23.third set tie-break 7-1. He said you drop your head and you were negative

:36:24. > :36:27.and it's all about the body language and showing the opponent. It's

:36:28. > :36:31.interesting because Johanna Konta is normally so good at that, you can't

:36:32. > :36:35.tell whether it is 1-1 in the first set or a 5-5 in the third set, she

:36:36. > :36:39.goes about her business. That is what I've been so impressed with.

:36:40. > :36:43.You went through it, and all the expectations of the British public,

:36:44. > :36:49.and I feel it is just starting to open up now because they didn't pay

:36:50. > :36:53.much attention when she won Stanford Lasky. May be the truth tennis fans,

:36:54. > :36:57.or even Sydney this year, Miami was the biggest title in the spring.

:36:58. > :37:00.When she beat Vekic there were lots of eyes watching that match and the

:37:01. > :37:03.way she was able to come through in the tight moments and she faced

:37:04. > :37:07.break points in the late stages of the third and came up with the

:37:08. > :37:13.clutch serves and that's really crucial. She was down 0- 33 times.

:37:14. > :37:21.Caroline Garcia has an aggressive game, it is a game that is good for

:37:22. > :37:24.grass. Absolutely and that's what it's about today, who can take the

:37:25. > :37:27.initiative, serve well, they've both be serving extremely well but who

:37:28. > :37:32.can get the next strike? This was her early in the tournament, that is

:37:33. > :37:37.her serve. It is good placement as well with that serve. Absolutely and

:37:38. > :37:41.that for both players who can serve to all four corners of the box and

:37:42. > :37:44.looking for the second shot to start to dictate play. They are more than

:37:45. > :37:47.willing to move forward and that's important on the grass to finish off

:37:48. > :37:51.points at the net and both players have been doing that. Look at that

:37:52. > :37:55.footwork, Unibet alertness and willingness to look forward and

:37:56. > :38:00.finish points off. I will say that Garcia has had a fortunate draw. She

:38:01. > :38:05.has played three lower ranked players, in the third round, who

:38:06. > :38:09.took out Kvitova. This is very much a step up for Garcia playing Konta,

:38:10. > :38:15.the ball will come at her much harder. I think that Wim Fissette

:38:16. > :38:20.will say you had to give the ball deep and not let her attack and keep

:38:21. > :38:24.on the baseline. Deep and make her move. Tracy, you've got to go and do

:38:25. > :38:28.some work. Tracy is on her way to the commentary box because the

:38:29. > :38:33.players are about to come out to play. We will watch that and we are

:38:34. > :38:34.ready for this. Tracy Austin is on her way to join Nick Mullins for

:38:35. > :38:44.this one. COMMENTATOR: Caroline Garcia,

:38:45. > :38:49.23-year-old Frenchwoman, from Lea, just outside the world's top 20 just

:38:50. > :38:57.now, the country's best player come up against Britain's number one --

:38:58. > :39:01.Lyon. Here is the sixth seed, sharing top billing and the

:39:02. > :39:06.morning's headlines, two Britain is embarking on the second week of

:39:07. > :39:08.Wimbledon, Andy Murray across on Centre Court later. Right now Jo

:39:09. > :39:25.Konta has all the attention to herself.

:39:26. > :40:34.Konta won the toss and invited Garcia to serve first.

:40:35. > :40:48.My goodness. Caroline Garcia's serve is one of her big assets. And she is

:40:49. > :40:50.being taken to the cleaners early on here by Jo Konta. Three break right

:40:51. > :41:46.at the start. Perfect start to Jo Konta's week, a

:41:47. > :41:52.week that she hopes will end up being the week of her life.

:41:53. > :41:55.Tracy Austin has hopped across into the commentary box, good afternoon,

:41:56. > :42:08.Tracey. Afternoon. It is a busy players' box but the

:42:09. > :42:11.most important person is on the left-hand side, a relatively new

:42:12. > :42:20.coach, the Belgian, Wim Fissette, who took over at the start of the

:42:21. > :42:35.year to help evolve her game. That is her boyfriend Jackson Wade. In

:42:36. > :43:09.the sunshine, in the fourth round at Wimbledon, Johanna Konta to serve.

:43:10. > :43:24.This really is going to be a server's duel. Caroline Garcia's

:43:25. > :43:33.father. Louis Paul. Dad and coach. Right now being her coach is the

:43:34. > :43:59.most dumb at most important thing. -- the most important thing.

:44:00. > :44:15.Gosh, that's really impressive. Gently working her way into this

:44:16. > :44:17.match. Just so focused, alert, great footwork, and striking the ball

:44:18. > :44:57.cleanly so soon. Beforehand has improved immensely

:44:58. > :45:02.for Jo Konta. That's still the weaker side. That's the side her

:45:03. > :45:07.opponents will stand by to target. The backhand is so solid. -- the

:45:08. > :45:39.forehand. Terrific pick-ups from Konta.

:45:40. > :45:44.Excellent depth from Garcia but short take-back. No problem with

:45:45. > :46:05.those deep shots. I guess one of the things we will

:46:06. > :46:12.have all noticed early in these opening exchanges is how low both

:46:13. > :46:15.players get to the ball, Wim Fissette will enjoy that,

:46:16. > :46:19.flexibility in the news, almost seeing the ball at head height.

:46:20. > :46:23.That's so important to get down with the legs, use the legs for power,

:46:24. > :46:27.also helps you get the racket head down in case you need to adjust to

:46:28. > :46:40.an awkward bounce at the last moment.

:46:41. > :46:45.15 years ago Andy Murray picked out as a potential number one, pushing

:46:46. > :46:52.Maria Sharapova all the way at the French Open. Has the attributes to

:46:53. > :46:56.do that, still hasn't quite broken into the world's top 20. It is a

:46:57. > :47:08.huge compliment that can also bring a lot of pressure as well.

:47:09. > :47:18.Interesting Garcia has an abbreviated motion. But she still

:47:19. > :47:27.gets to the important point. Trophy homes, good knee Ben Gummer upper

:47:28. > :47:34.body turn -- good knee bend, upper body turned.

:47:35. > :47:39.Yes, I'm sure as much as Caroline Garcia will have been thrilled to

:47:40. > :47:42.hear that from Andy Murray a few years back she might be cheesed off

:47:43. > :47:48.every time she plays now we always have to mention that fact.

:47:49. > :47:56.But it's that kind of serve and so much else about her game that

:47:57. > :48:16.prompted Andy Murray to suggest she might be the world's best one-day.

:48:17. > :48:25.Garcia is on the board, Konta with an early break of serve in this

:48:26. > :48:36.fourth-round match leads to- one. SUE BARKER: Konta leaves on Court

:48:37. > :48:45.One. Venus Williams on the Centre Court winning on serve against Ana

:48:46. > :48:50.Konjuh. That match is on the BBC sport website and a red button.

:48:51. > :48:53.Cracking match on Court two, 1-1 between Angelique Kerber and Garbine

:48:54. > :49:00.Muguruza. Muguruza took the second set 6-4 and has... No, she is

:49:01. > :49:04.serving so it is not a break point but that matches on the red button,

:49:05. > :49:11.the featured match on the red button. Over on Court 12 Jelena

:49:12. > :49:16.Ostapenko has actually lost five match points in her match against

:49:17. > :49:19.Elina Svitolina and it's in the tie-break. That matches on the red

:49:20. > :49:27.button on the BBC bbc.co.uk/sport stop the French Open champion. That

:49:28. > :49:31.is on Court 12. Over on Court 18 and Magdalena Rybarikova on serve in the

:49:32. > :49:35.third and final set. One of those players will be through to the

:49:36. > :49:40.Wimbledon quarterfinal for the first time. One of those we will update

:49:41. > :49:45.you with but one result to bring you is Kuznetsova has beaten Radwanska

:49:46. > :49:50.in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, yet to drop a set at the Championships. Big

:49:51. > :49:53.smile, through to her first Wimbledon quarterfinal in ten years.

:49:54. > :50:04.She's the first through to the quarterfinals. Back the go.

:50:05. > :50:11.COMMENTATOR: Jo Konta might be carrying the rather undefinable

:50:12. > :50:19.weight of expectation today heading into the second week, so impressive

:50:20. > :50:23.at the back end of the first week. It was the second round wrestle with

:50:24. > :50:29.Donna Vekic that was the big one third hours. I think that was the

:50:30. > :50:35.best match of the first week, certainly on the women's side. So

:50:36. > :50:37.much drama and the points were being won it wasn't because of unforced

:50:38. > :50:50.errors, incredibly aggressive tennis.

:50:51. > :50:57.That win against Vekic is the only time she's appeared on Centre Court

:50:58. > :51:06.so far this fortnight. This is the third time she's been on number one.

:51:07. > :51:11.Contact continuing to have easy service games, only lost one point

:51:12. > :51:36.on serve. Early days but that's a really good sign.

:51:37. > :51:43.Rather resigned look on the face of the French woman at the moment, such

:51:44. > :51:46.is the level of Konta's game. Garcia must be getting frustrated because

:51:47. > :51:51.she is sending the ball is back with tremendous pace and depth and Konta

:51:52. > :51:54.with the lower legs, lower body getting down so well and absorbing

:51:55. > :52:36.the pace and sending them back with interest. And accuracy.

:52:37. > :52:42.First strike tennis, big serve gets the week reply and the second shot

:52:43. > :53:13.takes control. Hm, Garcia got caught there. The

:53:14. > :53:58.slight hesitation cost her. Hitting the tape, just got a little

:53:59. > :53:59.out of Konta's strikes, didn't adjust with the left wrist to bring

:54:00. > :54:06.the ball back in play. Well played, Garcia. Still Konta

:54:07. > :54:45.with the break, 3-2. A woman who is getting used to

:54:46. > :54:49.turning the pages of British tennis history. She's the first since Laura

:54:50. > :54:54.Robson to get into this second week, four years ago that Robson got

:54:55. > :54:57.there. This is the opportunity, I'm sure you know, if you've read the

:54:58. > :55:04.papers and listen to the radio and us this morning, an opportunity for

:55:05. > :55:13.her to become the first British quarterfinalist since Joe Drury. Do

:55:14. > :55:17.we need to mention 40 years since Virginia? Let's start with the

:55:18. > :55:23.quarterfinals and Joe Drury, shall we? Yes. This is very makeable and

:55:24. > :55:27.doable, amazing how quickly Konta has begun to become comfortable in

:55:28. > :55:32.this position as part of the elite in the game. She's done so much work

:55:33. > :55:38.off the court. In the mental department, that is really what she

:55:39. > :55:41.needed. She is a quick student. She just looks so comfortable out on

:55:42. > :56:44.court managing everything. Tracy Austin talking about Konta's

:56:45. > :56:49.progression as a player. She was out of the top 100 a few years ago

:56:50. > :56:52.semifinalist last year in Australia, her big Grand Slam breakthrough,

:56:53. > :56:56.quarterfinalist in Melbourne this year, lost to the eventual champion

:56:57. > :57:34.Serena Williams. Breaking new ground here at Wimbledon.

:57:35. > :57:56.She is swinging hard and swinging with confidence at the moment.

:57:57. > :58:07.She might think about challenging that. Marija Cicak puts her finger

:58:08. > :58:12.out decisively indicating it was wide and Konta takes that claim.

:58:13. > :58:14.Confirmation as well that our friends at Hawk-Eye tell us it was

:58:15. > :58:36.out. That was right on the line. Applause

:58:37. > :58:39.from the dad, from the coach. Smart return, deep down the middle. If you

:58:40. > :58:41.don't get the line you get them brown patches and the awkward bounce

:58:42. > :59:01.too. It is one thing to serve big but to

:59:02. > :59:02.be able to serve big at clutch moments, that's the added element

:59:03. > :00:00.for the best servers in the game. That's a brilliant return.

:00:01. > :00:04.Blistering. She just has a little more time facing the second serve,

:00:05. > :00:12.89 mph instead of over 100, which is the norm for the Konta first serve.

:00:13. > :00:23.It is a breezy day. It is rattling the effects microphones.

:00:24. > :00:46.A missile to the Konta forehand, she was late.

:00:47. > :00:54.That is the big serve to save that crucial break point. She saved seven

:00:55. > :00:56.of 11 break points that she has faced in the tournament so far, make

:00:57. > :02:05.that eight of 12. Hmm. Konta having to dig, but did

:02:06. > :02:14.well in that service game, applause from her coach and hitting partner

:02:15. > :02:19.as well, Andrew Fitzpatrick. You might have been imagining talking

:02:20. > :02:23.about strengthening that, and it is what separates those were excellent

:02:24. > :02:28.and those who become champions. That is really the difference at the end

:02:29. > :02:31.of the day, who handles the big moments, and particularly on the

:02:32. > :02:45.grass court, opportunities, and go very quickly, and you have to try to

:02:46. > :02:56.capitalise on those small windows. Those break points, keep the focus.

:02:57. > :03:02.She has to make sure that you doesn't make contact on the other

:03:03. > :03:13.side of the net. Great job by Garcia there.

:03:14. > :03:19.See, I think shot selection is still needed to be improved for Garcia,

:03:20. > :03:25.that was a hard ball coming across the court, and she tried to hit it

:03:26. > :03:33.up the line accurately - that is high risk. Go deep and hard back to

:03:34. > :03:41.middle or crosscourt. Made that one, but a lot of risk to it. It is one

:03:42. > :03:46.of the things that Wim Fissette was being very honest about, saying that

:03:47. > :03:49.Garcia has all the shots, a very big selection to choose from, but it is

:03:50. > :03:57.the timing - knowing when to play which one.

:03:58. > :04:06.I think that is what Andy Murray saw, the ability for Garcia to

:04:07. > :04:13.strike the ball well, hit the ball cleanly, good athlete, has weapons.

:04:14. > :04:16.But she has oftentimes been brittle in the past - it is getting better

:04:17. > :04:43.in the big moments. The best thing you can do as a

:04:44. > :04:48.player, if you do not feel confident in big moments, is have certain

:04:49. > :04:53.patterns that you go to for comfort, and I feel like Konta knows - she

:04:54. > :05:03.gets a bowl, OK, these are the places that I can hit the ball to,

:05:04. > :05:18.really clear with that. A shake of a French faced, Konta still ahead 4-3.

:05:19. > :05:22.-- fist. It is interesting you talked about the mental approach,

:05:23. > :05:26.Tracy, and how much stronger Jo Konta has become, but she was

:05:27. > :05:30.rattled in Indian Wells by Garcia when she lost the third set. One of

:05:31. > :05:35.the few occasions this year when somebody has actually managed to

:05:36. > :05:40.wheedle their way into the mind of Konta, and she will remember that,

:05:41. > :05:45.Konta, and so will Garcia. Absolutely, but with Konta, she is

:05:46. > :05:49.such a quick learner, and she is so interested in getting better, she

:05:50. > :05:52.always talks about the mantra. In press conferences, there are several

:05:53. > :05:56.things you will hear every single press conference, I just go out

:05:57. > :06:01.every day and try to improve as a tennis player. Small goals like

:06:02. > :06:05.that, and it takes the big picture focus and pressure off, and are so

:06:06. > :06:11.many players do that in order to take the expectations away. And you

:06:12. > :06:16.really have to learn about yourself as a person and as a player, and

:06:17. > :06:22.that is why it takes usually a couple of years for players to feel

:06:23. > :06:30.more comfortable on tour. What they like to do on a off days, I saw Jo

:06:31. > :06:37.practising yesterday about 11 until 12, then probably off for the rest

:06:38. > :06:40.of the day, just resting. Catching Poldark, that is what she has been

:06:41. > :06:46.doing, her favourite show at the moment. She has been carrying

:06:47. > :06:51.assault around Wimbledon, on and off the court, with such confidence, she

:06:52. > :06:55.has been chatting about her new flat up the road in Putney, baking

:06:56. > :06:59.muffins, watching Poldark. She is in a good place at the moment, a good

:07:00. > :07:10.place in his first set with a break of serve, 4-3.

:07:11. > :07:20.APPLAUSE Into the forehand again,

:07:21. > :07:26.predominantly on that side, a little more than half of the time going to

:07:27. > :07:34.the forehand wing, about 60-40, the forehand wing on this side.

:07:35. > :07:44.And I think that is because the forehand of Garcia is not quite as

:07:45. > :07:47.sturdy. Doesn't get to the contact us consistently as she does on the

:07:48. > :08:09.backhand, Garcia. Oh! She hasn't hit a backhand in

:08:10. > :08:40.this game yet. My goodness, she wrapped herself around this.

:08:41. > :08:47.Hmm. And after the adventure that was Konta's previous service game,

:08:48. > :08:54.having to fend off a break point, that one much more straightforward.

:08:55. > :09:01.It so often happens in a match - the player who serves the opening game

:09:02. > :09:05.gets broken, a few extra nerves, and it was Garcia who lost her serve

:09:06. > :09:09.that opening game, played from behind ever since. Here she is,

:09:10. > :10:04.serving to stay in this first set. A lot of rhythm to this match, very

:10:05. > :10:34.quick points. Vice Konta is managing to get those

:10:35. > :10:39.returns of serve in very well, running at 76% in this one. Yes, she

:10:40. > :10:44.is reading the return very well, she is on it, and depth has been

:10:45. > :11:07.phenomenal, just so dialled in. Konta has only made three unforced

:11:08. > :11:18.errors. The focus is extraordinary from Konta.

:11:19. > :11:25.Watcher at every point, she finishes, she looks down at the

:11:26. > :11:29.ground, she might looked up at her support box, but no clue about

:11:30. > :11:33.anybody else in the stadium - that is exactly the way you want it, just

:11:34. > :11:59.going through her routine before each point.

:12:00. > :12:09.UMPIRE: Let, first serve. Garcia getting an astounding 86% of her

:12:10. > :12:40.first serves in. And she withstood the mental

:12:41. > :12:49.pressure well, Caroline Garcia, and she will force Konta to serve for

:12:50. > :12:57.the set. A little technical masterclass, Tracy, on this Garcia

:12:58. > :13:04.serve. She is an -- unusual in that she does not touch the ball with a

:13:05. > :13:15.racket. The abbreviated motion there, when she gets to that point,

:13:16. > :13:20.with the left knee bent, legs quite close together, but the left arm

:13:21. > :13:26.reaching up, beautifully extended, and then get the left hip out over

:13:27. > :13:37.the baseline, continues to dip down and then push forward and -- uncoils

:13:38. > :13:50.with her whole upper body. Over the top of the ball and lands on the

:13:51. > :13:54.left foot, inside the court for the next couple of minutes we will be

:13:55. > :13:58.concentrating on the serve of Johanna Konta, and if it goes well,

:13:59. > :14:29.she will be a set to the good in the next few minutes. Here it is, 5-4.

:14:30. > :14:37.Once again on the second serve, the depth of the return from the French

:14:38. > :14:39.player. Nice start from Garcia, putting a little pressure on Konta,

:14:40. > :15:03.down 0-15. Yes, nicely done, because she was

:15:04. > :15:11.under enormous pressure from the return. That was a heck of a pick-up

:15:12. > :15:13.from Konta there, a laser beam of a return, and then Konta had all the

:15:14. > :16:21.time in the world for the pass. A couple of second serves this game,

:16:22. > :16:28.and Garcia has attacked, she has played a very aggressive game.

:16:29. > :17:23.APPLAUSE A bit more aggressive, taking

:17:24. > :17:27.control of the conversation earlier, Tracy.

:17:28. > :17:45.Yeah, no signs of nerve, Konta, going back to her game plan.

:17:46. > :18:25.111 mph down break point, really impressive.

:18:26. > :19:25.She has had to take the long route. Here is a set point for Konta.

:19:26. > :19:55.Tough for those watching - imagine what it is like to be playing!

:19:56. > :20:02.APPLAUSE And again, you cannot say enough of

:20:03. > :20:07.the quality of the return, and again it is on the second serve.

:20:08. > :20:09.That is the key, Garcia all of a sudden having more time to produce

:20:10. > :20:39.the return. Oh, late goal. It is confirmed by

:20:40. > :20:45.the umpire that it was out from her view, but Caroline Garcia wants to

:20:46. > :20:49.double-check. She has got three challenges up her sleeve, so she

:20:50. > :21:08.might as well, such a critical point. Oh, it is in!

:21:09. > :21:15.Oh, now Jo Konta wants to talk about this, because the ball was called

:21:16. > :21:18.out, and she would say that she has stopped playing. The umpire was

:21:19. > :21:29.saying that it was so late that it did not

:21:30. > :21:38.disrupt hub she registered her objections but the objections were

:21:39. > :21:48.turned back. The break of serve has gone.

:21:49. > :22:30.Back on serve. Pretty crucial point there, Hawk-Eye still in play.

:22:31. > :22:36.So let's sea of con two can dismiss that last game and move forward. --

:22:37. > :22:50.so let's sea if those shots not hit with as much

:22:51. > :23:24.authority from Konta. Lost this game mentally, three

:23:25. > :24:23.unforced errors before this game. Let's have a listen to that moment

:24:24. > :24:27.when the challenge was made, and Jo Konta said, what made you think,

:24:28. > :24:29.Marija Cicak, that I would challenge before the ball was called out?

:24:30. > :24:48.Let's listen to the audio on this. Pretty much simultaneously, maybe

:24:49. > :24:58.Konta just a little air and of just a little ahead of the call. So the

:24:59. > :25:03.call came after Konta hit the ball and struck the ball, and that is

:25:04. > :25:08.what's Marija Cicak is saying. Konta did challenge it, but in challenging

:25:09. > :25:17.it, it turned out that the ball was good. Eventually, Miss Garcia luck

:25:18. > :25:22.that Marija Cicak and said, was that in or out, and she said I think it

:25:23. > :25:25.was long, but if you want to challenge, and she said sure,

:25:26. > :25:33.because she had three remaining. And it was in by just a few blades of

:25:34. > :25:44.grass. Look at that, that is the manufacturer's name, that is in by

:25:45. > :25:51.the depth of the ink! SUE BARKER: We are leaving this match on BBC Two,

:25:52. > :25:55.but it is over on BBC One now. Well, such a busy day here, we are going

:25:56. > :25:58.to round up the scores for you here on BBC Two in just a moment, but

:25:59. > :26:06.back to the match we were watching earlier between Angelique Kerber and

:26:07. > :26:07.Garbine Muguruza, it is an serve, Muguruza leading 4-3, so let's

:26:08. > :26:33.rejoin the commentary team. Topsy-turvy final set continuing,

:26:34. > :26:41.Kerber twice a break up, Muguruza ahead for the first time.

:26:42. > :26:48.APPLAUSE Real conviction there, we know

:26:49. > :26:54.Kerber has not moved forward that much in this match, but she has been

:26:55. > :27:09.solid when she has to. 5-7. Comfortable hold. And with

:27:10. > :27:13.Muguruza holding four break points, saving four in the last service

:27:14. > :27:18.game, maybe she was just taking a bit of a breather there. They are

:27:19. > :28:09.locked again. Yeah, it has been so tight, this third set.

:28:10. > :28:17.Could have closed in a little bit more, Muguruza, not to allow this

:28:18. > :28:24.want to bounce. That is the toughest volley - a couple of steps in, she

:28:25. > :28:26.just stops to early. Not an easy shot, relying on a good bounce

:28:27. > :28:56.there. Just look at that scoreboard still,

:28:57. > :29:09.we have been saying that so much in this match, so tight!

:29:10. > :29:23.Still believing, that is the best way, Muguruza, forwards. That is

:29:24. > :29:29.incredible, isn't it? What a number, 16 for Muguruza, just one for

:29:30. > :29:41.Kerber. Kerber has been to the net seven times, Muguruza 52 times!

:29:42. > :29:52.Really good service game here from Muguruza. Serving at 64% first

:29:53. > :30:08.serves. A smile? From can cheat? Or was it a grimace? -- Conchita.

:30:09. > :30:35.Former Wimbledon Championships Conchita Martinez has played every

:30:36. > :30:38.single shot, the Davis Cup and Fed Cup champion, long while retired,

:30:39. > :30:42.but after this match she will have an ice bath, go and see the physio

:30:43. > :30:46.to get rid of the tension before she has to go again. She has to play

:30:47. > :30:50.legends this week as well, of course she will. But I think the difference

:30:51. > :30:54.for Muguruza is she said it has just been great to be able to speak to

:30:55. > :31:00.Conchita Wurst matches, she said I trust what she says, she's done it,

:31:01. > :31:05.she's won it, and she can help Muguruza incredibly this week. They

:31:06. > :31:11.have a really good relationship and there is lots of trust built up and

:31:12. > :31:13.that is key for the coach- player relationship, you must 100% trust

:31:14. > :31:18.what your coach is saying and the fact she has done it, 94, she beaten

:31:19. > :31:26.body pretty good in that final as well. Allowing Martina to win her

:31:27. > :31:29.tenth Wimbledon. Been a great asset for Muguruza this week, Conchita

:31:30. > :31:49.Martinez. The crowd rallying for both. Kerber

:31:50. > :32:04.to stay in the match. Smart play again from Muguruza. I

:32:05. > :32:06.love what she is doing, back channelling all of those balls

:32:07. > :32:07.through the middle of the court forcing Kerber to come up with

:32:08. > :32:45.something a little special. Fortune will favour the brave in

:32:46. > :32:48.these situations. That was a very interesting shot from Kerber under

:32:49. > :33:22.pressure. She has not wavered from her mindset

:33:23. > :33:25.and game plan today. She has been aggressive from the first shot,

:33:26. > :33:46.Muguruza. That was an interesting shot from

:33:47. > :33:56.Muguruza, straight through the middle but not beforehand, of the

:33:57. > :33:59.back-end. -- not the forehand, off the back-end. Two quarterfinal

:34:00. > :34:15.points. Torben Beltz is going to fall off

:34:16. > :35:21.his chair if he's not careful. UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Miss

:35:22. > :35:26.Muguruza. You can see what it means. The

:35:27. > :35:30.battle of the finalists from the last two years is over, Muguruza has

:35:31. > :35:35.done, she gritted her teeth, stayed faithful to the way she does best,

:35:36. > :35:41.the winning smile says it all. She is through to her second

:35:42. > :35:45.quarterfinal at Wimbledon. Very much a woman of conviction to the way she

:35:46. > :35:59.has needed to play today, Garbine Muguruza. Very impressive. 4-6, 6-4,

:36:00. > :36:07.6-4 in two hours and 20 gruelling minutes. SUE BARKER: What a

:36:08. > :36:09.wonderful match of those watching on court two, what a treat,

:36:10. > :36:16.high-quality tennis, and Muguruza goes through. Well, this is the busy

:36:17. > :36:20.day when all last 16 matches are being played. This match is on Court

:36:21. > :36:25.One, Britain's Jo Konta took the first set in a tie-break 7-3 against

:36:26. > :36:30.Caroline Garcia. That matches live on BBC One if you want to watch it.

:36:31. > :36:34.Over on Court 3 Coco Vandeweghe is serving, she was a break of serve up

:36:35. > :36:37.against the former world number one Caroline Wozniacki and it is now

:36:38. > :36:43.back on serve. That is on the red button and website. Overall on Court

:36:44. > :36:48.12 Marin Cilic in your picture has a break of serve, although facing a

:36:49. > :36:55.break point against poverty Bautista Agut. The 18th seed. Over on Court

:36:56. > :37:00.18, the battle of the big servers, Sam Querrey, former champion at

:37:01. > :37:04.Queen's. That is on serve. That is on the red button and BBC sport

:37:05. > :37:07.website. We are going to head off to Centre Court, where Andy Murray will

:37:08. > :37:11.be second on court and he may be getting ready now because Venus

:37:12. > :37:14.Williams is one game away from going through to the last eight. We are

:37:15. > :37:17.going to stay with this one on centre and join and Smith and Gigi

:37:18. > :37:34.Salmon for this one. It has been an impressive display

:37:35. > :37:42.from Venus Williams, 18 year age gap between these two in their first

:37:43. > :38:36.meeting. The experience of Venus Williams shining through.

:38:37. > :38:45.Under pressure, treble match point down and country-macro hangs in

:38:46. > :39:26.there. -- Konjuh. Not finished yet. Treble match point down,

:39:27. > :39:29.country-macro has shown some mettle. She has shown calmness, she is a

:39:30. > :39:31.huge ball striker, as you've seen in the last few minutes she hits the

:39:32. > :39:51.ball harder than Williams. But for the majority of the 59

:39:52. > :39:58.minutes they have been it has been Venus running the show and serving

:39:59. > :39:59.brilliantly. Konjuh a little naive strategically against one of the

:40:00. > :40:08.greats. Not an awful lot Konjuh could have

:40:09. > :40:56.done about that. Well saved from the 19-year-old from

:40:57. > :41:00.Croatia. She faced triple match point to Venus Williams but she came

:41:01. > :41:14.up with some serve this and the match goes on. -- came up with some

:41:15. > :41:19.serves. Still very much, though, Sam Smith, Venus Williams in control of

:41:20. > :41:23.this one. Yes, she just fancied a little longer out here on her

:41:24. > :41:27.favourite court. I was about to shower her with praise with a

:41:28. > :41:32.wonderful service performance, managing it from the baseline with

:41:33. > :41:37.young Konjuh. It's such a privilege to have Billie Jean King at this

:41:38. > :41:42.year's Wimbledon 50 years on, I'm sure she went mind me saying, since

:41:43. > :41:46.she won the triple Crown, singles, doubles and mixed and did it all

:41:47. > :41:49.again in 1973. It is something Anyika Onuora was on four at the

:41:50. > :41:53.start of this one, still in the doubles and mixed but I fear it

:41:54. > :41:58.might be stretched too far with the triple Crown this year. -- Konjuh.

:41:59. > :42:46.But we've got to stay positive. Peter Simple now for Konjuh, she

:42:47. > :42:49.must break the Williams serve but it doesn't look that simple after that

:42:50. > :42:56.race. She will struggle because Williams has most of the time serve

:42:57. > :43:07.down the middle of that T and Konjuh seems to lack standing outside by

:43:08. > :43:11.the double strand lines. -- tramlines. She has had a couple of

:43:12. > :43:14.break points, Konjuh, in the second set. It is possible. She can get

:43:15. > :43:32.herself into that position. To do so I would suggest she shifts

:43:33. > :43:41.over towards that side. I'm sounding like a broken record. I think she

:43:42. > :43:48.likes it out there. A couple more match points for Venus Williams. She

:43:49. > :44:10.had three on the Konjuhserve and now has three on her own.

:44:11. > :44:16.There it is. Just over an hour, the five-time Wimbledon Championships or

:44:17. > :44:20.her box, including her mother, are on their feet because Venus Williams

:44:21. > :44:30.is back in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. An excellent

:44:31. > :44:39.performance from Venus Williams. She has done the twirl, takes her seat.

:44:40. > :44:44.Sam Smith, it is incredible what we continue to see from Venus Williams

:44:45. > :44:48.year after year. She's 37 years of age but the hunger and is still

:44:49. > :45:00.there in spades. She doesn't think it's remarkable. But for Konjuh, she

:45:01. > :45:04.played her first Wimbledon in 97. Williams was expected to have a good

:45:05. > :45:08.run here. I don't think she is happy with her last eight finish. I think

:45:09. > :45:13.there is much more to come from Williams, watched by one of her

:45:14. > :45:20.biggest fans and supporters, she will know that Billie Jean was up

:45:21. > :45:24.there. Venus is nicely coming on to the boil at this year's Wimbledon.

:45:25. > :45:29.What a tasty quarterfinal match against the French Open champion

:45:30. > :45:36.Jelena Ostapenko. Venus Williams is used to big hitting by now.

:45:37. > :45:41.So, Venus Williams, five times champion, the only former champion

:45:42. > :45:45.left in the ladies tournament is through to the last eight at

:45:46. > :45:53.Wimbledon once again at the age of 37. And still a contender for a

:45:54. > :45:58.Grand Slam title. A 12 from Venus and she is through to the

:45:59. > :46:02.quarterfinals tomorrow. We have been promised we may get a little rain

:46:03. > :46:05.later, there are a few clouds around but everyone still enjoying the

:46:06. > :46:08.Wimbledon experience and even if you have a ground passed today it is so

:46:09. > :46:12.wonderful, so much happening around the All-England Club today on this

:46:13. > :46:19.Alnwick Monday, as we call it, and you can obviously see all of the

:46:20. > :46:25.courts on the red button, the BBC sport app and website. -- manic

:46:26. > :46:30.Monday. Before we head back to Centre Court let's remind you of

:46:31. > :46:33.some matches that have already been completed. Svetlana Kuznetsova was

:46:34. > :46:37.not on court long, another straight sets victory for her, the seventh

:46:38. > :46:44.seed going through against Radwanska 7-2, 6-4 -- 6-2. Such experience,

:46:45. > :46:47.former Grand Slam winner, and nobody really talking about her but she has

:46:48. > :46:54.raced through the Championships this year. The French Open champion is

:46:55. > :47:00.also three and will face Venus Williams, Jelena Ostapenko. She hit

:47:01. > :47:04.42 outright winners in this match and she won it on her eighth match

:47:05. > :47:13.point against the number four seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6, so

:47:14. > :47:17.Ostapenko goes through. Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia had a battle

:47:18. > :47:22.out on Court 18 against the qualifier Petra Martic of Croatia

:47:23. > :47:26.but came through in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and goes through to face

:47:27. > :47:36.either Coco Vandeweghe or Caroline Wozniacki.

:47:37. > :47:43.And we saw an incredible match on Court two, worthy of a final.

:47:44. > :47:47.Everyone enjoying it, the spectators that were there. Quality tennis from

:47:48. > :47:51.start to finish and it went to Garbine Muguruza, the former French

:47:52. > :47:55.Open champion winning 6-4 in the third set against the top seed

:47:56. > :48:02.Angelique Kerber, who will lose her number one ranking after that loss.

:48:03. > :48:06.Garbine Muguruza has again built for the grass and she could go a long

:48:07. > :48:10.way here, a former finalist at the Championships. Some wonderful scenes

:48:11. > :48:17.out on Court two, they thoroughly enjoyed the match, standing ovation

:48:18. > :48:21.for both players. As I said, it is so busy, Henman Hill is busy as

:48:22. > :48:26.well. We have Jo Konta playing on Court Number One, that match is on

:48:27. > :48:54.BBC One. Coming up next, a very familiar face on Centre Court.

:48:55. > :49:28.Wimbledon Championships and, a supreme performance.

:49:29. > :49:35.SUE BARKER: There is a real buzz on Centre Court, as there always is

:49:36. > :49:40.before Andy Murray matches. Auris, you know all about this and about

:49:41. > :49:45.this day in the second week when it all starts for the top players,

:49:46. > :49:48.doesn't it? You call it manic Monday and I call it Magic money because if

:49:49. > :49:52.you like tennis this is maybe the best day of the year, the best 16

:49:53. > :49:56.players, male and female, have to play today on various courts so I

:49:57. > :50:00.can imagine it is a scheduling nightmare as to who to put on, we

:50:01. > :50:05.just saw Kerber and Muguruza on Court Number Two but somebody has to

:50:06. > :50:09.be on two and somebody on one and I'm sure everybody wants to be

:50:10. > :50:13.underscored but obviously there is a home favourite coming in Andy Murray

:50:14. > :50:16.and afterwards we will see Roger Federer, those guys deserve to be

:50:17. > :50:21.here. I'm just hearing on Court Number One Jo Konta has been broken

:50:22. > :50:25.in the second set in her match against Caroline Garcia, that match

:50:26. > :50:29.is on BBC One if you want to see it. We hear the players for this match

:50:30. > :50:34.are on their way. Andy Murray knows this walk well but this is a new

:50:35. > :50:39.experience for Benoit Paire. Yes and in all likelihood the Frenchman will

:50:40. > :50:43.see the effects of Leon. This is a very different Court, very special

:50:44. > :50:46.court. Having said that he is in the round of 16, both players have

:50:47. > :50:53.played before on one occasion when Morais won. -- Marie won. Let's see

:50:54. > :50:57.how Murray starts because he had two days off after this scare against

:50:58. > :51:05.Fognini on Friday night so we will see Harry comes out of the blocks.

:51:06. > :51:08.The French player is a shot maker, bit on the unpredictable side but

:51:09. > :51:13.that will be entertaining for the people. Marie sees to that, every

:51:14. > :51:16.opponent has been unpredictable and a little different, this year. It

:51:17. > :51:20.looks that way, Murray has his own troubles with the hip, we shouldn't

:51:21. > :51:25.talk about that any more. He needs to improve inform me in the second

:51:26. > :51:31.week he must step up to the plate, Federer, Nadal and Murray and

:51:32. > :51:36.Djokovic are in great form but obviously, walking out as we speak

:51:37. > :51:43.at a beautiful time of the day,... Stand-by for the roar.

:51:44. > :52:00.That is Benoit Paire and Andy Murray, huge cheer, everyone

:52:01. > :52:03.standing to welcome back the defending champion. Andy Murray on

:52:04. > :52:07.Centre Court, Jo Konta on Court Number One. This is some new

:52:08. > :52:11.experience for British fans here, Boris. To have so many players

:52:12. > :52:15.playing at the same time, in fact there are two. The success rate in

:52:16. > :52:20.the first week was excellent. Obviously we expect this man to be

:52:21. > :52:24.in the second week. It was Konta's first time in the round of 16 so

:52:25. > :52:28.it's a great day for British tennis. It certainly is and you mentioned

:52:29. > :52:32.Andy's match against Fognini, on paper it looked straightforward but

:52:33. > :52:38.it was anything but in the fourth set. Yes, we all expected a fifth

:52:39. > :52:41.set but the crowd was on their feet. We talked about maybe closing the

:52:42. > :52:43.roof because it was getting darker late out there. But he found the

:52:44. > :52:49.magic and won the last five games and really came back. That's really

:52:50. > :52:53.the type of atmosphere he likes, he plays his best tennis in so

:52:54. > :52:57.hopefully the crowd gets behind him early so he can raise his emotions.

:52:58. > :53:01.He is trying to go into the quarterfinals for the tenth

:53:02. > :53:05.consecutive year, Andy Murray. What a record that is. We've talked about

:53:06. > :53:07.his rather unorthodox opponents. Let's look at his story so far in

:53:08. > :53:20.the Championships. You get out there and get through

:53:21. > :53:23.the first few games you settle down and remember that you can play

:53:24. > :53:29.tennis and that's what you always do. When you are out there in the

:53:30. > :53:33.middle of it you are trying to learn a little bit from each point you

:53:34. > :53:39.play. Plenty of style from Andy Murray. He's not an easy guide to

:53:40. > :53:45.read and he was playing shots you don't see many guys try, never mind

:53:46. > :53:50.pulling off. That's too good. Did somebody say he had a hip problem?

:53:51. > :53:54.It's been great so far, happy with how I've been living, no reason why

:53:55. > :54:00.I can't have a good one. That is brilliant, Murray through to the

:54:01. > :54:04.third round at Wimbledon. I feel like I let Fabio Duarte to a few too

:54:05. > :54:08.many of the points. Well played, Fabio Fognini. There was a lot going

:54:09. > :54:15.on on the court, Fabio got a point penalty which is very rare. Point

:54:16. > :54:21.penalty, using an obscenity. It's the game. A good one to get through

:54:22. > :54:25.and the crowd at the end were great. What a way to finish! As the

:54:26. > :54:28.tournament goes on and you want to be the aggressor, the dictator,

:54:29. > :54:34.that's something I work on in practice.

:54:35. > :54:40.SUE BARKER: Well, Andy knows he will have to improve on that third-round

:54:41. > :54:45.match against Fabio Fognini but the great champions do. They know that

:54:46. > :54:49.every round you have got it up your game. This is a two-week tournament,

:54:50. > :54:52.not a one-week tournament and you have to pace yourself a little. If

:54:53. > :54:55.you play your best tennis on the first Wednesday or Thursday you will

:54:56. > :55:00.not have it in the second week so that plays into his favour. Ten

:55:01. > :55:06.times in the round of 16 going to the quarterfinal. You want to raise

:55:07. > :55:12.your level depending on your position. Obviously he is a horse

:55:13. > :55:14.that jumps only as high as necessary. In the second week in

:55:15. > :55:19.order for him to defend the title he needs to improve a little bit.

:55:20. > :55:23.Murray has looked good. We've talked a little bit about the limp and that

:55:24. > :55:26.he has been limping a little bit over the week but he is moving so

:55:27. > :55:41.fast on the court, lots of people have been testing him. Without

:55:42. > :55:45.having a chance to win. In the press conference when people asked him

:55:46. > :55:49.about it, he said maybe I finally started to what, maybe it's not a

:55:50. > :55:52.problem, maybe it's the way I walk. Between the points he is sort of

:55:53. > :55:58.wobbling but once the points start he is fit as a fiddle. Physically he

:55:59. > :56:02.is 100%. He has a great team around him that will get him fit. It does

:56:03. > :56:05.look like there is a little bit of a limp. What about his opponent today?

:56:06. > :56:09.Benoit Paire is a rather flashy player and very different from

:56:10. > :56:15.others. Let's find out more about him. This is the first time I'm in

:56:16. > :56:21.the second week in Wimbledon so I'm really happy. My game is good this

:56:22. > :56:26.week, but it's the first week so we will see in the second week. For the

:56:27. > :56:30.first week it was very good. I hope for the next week it will be the

:56:31. > :56:36.same. This man was absolutely unplayable today. I feel more

:56:37. > :56:42.confident on grass, I won some matches this year in Stuttgart. I

:56:43. > :56:46.feel good, I want to play hundred percent in all of the matches I

:56:47. > :56:50.play, the most important thing is to play fully in every point that's

:56:51. > :56:54.what I'm saying and for the moment it is working so I will try and do

:56:55. > :56:58.the same against Andy. It will be tough against Andy, it's never easy,

:56:59. > :57:04.but I played him one time on clay and lost in three sets and I will

:57:05. > :57:08.try this time to make it different. For me I know that Andy Murray is

:57:09. > :57:12.the king here but I will try and do my best to see if I can win. He was

:57:13. > :57:18.a little injured before the tournament and I saw his first two

:57:19. > :57:26.matches he won easily in three sets against two players, brown and

:57:27. > :57:31.public. I don't have any problem. He will be 100% and I will have to play

:57:32. > :57:34.a good match if I want to win. -- Alexander Bublik. The most famous

:57:35. > :57:37.court, the Centre Court at Wimbledon, is very special but I've

:57:38. > :57:42.never played on the skort and it will be special for me and I'm happy

:57:43. > :57:46.and proud to be on the skort. I hope I'm going to make a good match

:57:47. > :57:52.because I feel confident so my goal is to win the match.

:57:53. > :57:57.He is certainly a lot better on this surface now because it was three

:57:58. > :58:01.years ago he was very outspoken about playing in Wimbledon. To quote

:58:02. > :58:09.him from his press conference he said: simple, I hate Wimbledon. How

:58:10. > :58:11.dare he, Boris? Yes, you shouldn't be allowed back in the club after a

:58:12. > :58:15.statement like that. Not every player is comfortable on the grass

:58:16. > :58:19.so they blame it, that's very much part of our history and whoever wins

:58:20. > :58:26.Wimbledon is part of the record books. Having listened to him a

:58:27. > :58:30.little bit he has a very bushy beard. I don't know if that is

:58:31. > :58:35.superstition, or if that is the look nowadays. He mentioned he played in

:58:36. > :58:39.Stuttgart as a warm up on a grass tournament, he mentioned he will try

:58:40. > :58:43.everything. You are supposed to try everything, you don't have to

:58:44. > :58:47.mention it. Let's look at the drop shots and forehand slides, some of

:58:48. > :58:51.the flashy shots he likes to play. Such an on traditional play but he

:58:52. > :58:54.has a good backhand. He has one of the best backhands in the game, he

:58:55. > :58:59.runs around the forehand to play the backhand at times and a very

:59:00. > :59:02.interesting shotmaker. He goes for shots that other people would just

:59:03. > :59:06.bumble back. Very difficult as an opponent to find the right strategy.

:59:07. > :59:10.I suppose it's difficult when playing somebody who is so flashy

:59:11. > :59:14.and unpredictable it's not easy down the other end, is it? You have to

:59:15. > :59:17.watch your own form and watch the other guy at the same time and that

:59:18. > :59:21.has been a problem with Andy in the first week, especially in the

:59:22. > :59:25.Fognini match, maybe watching the other guy too much at times what he

:59:26. > :59:31.was doing. Obviously Andy has a strategy right but it depends a lot

:59:32. > :59:35.on the player and the way he is serving. As far as Andy is concerned

:59:36. > :59:40.he has proved he can win matches when not playing well. That is

:59:41. > :59:44.really important, isn't it? It's the sign of a winner and the sign of a

:59:45. > :59:48.champion. You cannot always play your very best, you have to play

:59:49. > :59:53.good enough, especially in the early rounds when you expect to be in the

:59:54. > :59:57.second week of a Grand Slam. I think Andy has just done that, coasted

:59:58. > :00:01.nicely, had two days off on Saturday and Sunday so the training sessions

:00:02. > :00:06.are interesting, what you will do on the Saturday or Sunday but I'm sure

:00:07. > :00:10.they found the right way. All of the players are playing with injury,

:00:11. > :00:13.almost everyone has a needle. If you go to the locker room now everyone

:00:14. > :00:19.is with the train are getting taped up somewhere. There isn't a player

:00:20. > :00:22.who steps on the court who is 100%. We will move out of I like the carry

:00:23. > :00:29.on talking because the players are about to walk out. It is going to be

:00:30. > :00:33.important for Andy to get off to a good start, isn't it? Absolutely. He

:00:34. > :00:37.wants to have the crowd behind him early. They really lifted him on

:00:38. > :00:41.Friday night. He wants to get the timing right early. He wants to be

:00:42. > :00:46.the first one to break the other guy's serve because that sets you in

:00:47. > :00:56.a nice mood in the match. OK, so we are getting here Boris. Thank you,

:00:57. > :01:01.on your way to the commentary box. I will just update you on BBC One, Jo

:01:02. > :01:08.Konta is playing on Court Number One and she is down 4-1, down a double

:01:09. > :01:10.break of serve in the second set, although she won the first set. That

:01:11. > :01:21.is over on BBC One. But now it is British number one,

:01:22. > :01:57.defending champion Andy Murray, starting on Centre Court.

:01:58. > :02:14.No shortage of eccentric opponents for Andrew Murray during this

:02:15. > :02:29.tournament, but he is definitely playing against one in Benoit Paire.

:02:30. > :02:39.UMPIRE: Mr Paire is challenging the call, the ball was called out. One

:02:40. > :02:48.of the earliest challenges I have seen in a match. My call stands,

:02:49. > :03:11.30-0. Expect the unexpected today. UMPIRE: Mr Paire has two challenges

:03:12. > :03:20.remaining. He has just finished a very nice lunch upstairs, coming

:03:21. > :03:26.down to support his countrymen. Bash -- countryman.

:03:27. > :03:34.This is what you are looking for after you didn't have a match over

:03:35. > :03:39.the weekend. How different is that? Everybody needs to regenerate, all

:03:40. > :03:43.the stocks of food and drink comes in, but two days since Andy Murray

:03:44. > :03:51.played, one day break for everybody, but two days since the Fognini

:03:52. > :03:57.match. That is the tricky part, Saturday and Sunday, obviously a

:03:58. > :04:02.long one on Friday night, so I'm sure they took it easy on Saturday,

:04:03. > :04:13.but you want to get a proper practice on the Sunday. To start

:04:14. > :04:15.ready on the Monday at 2:30. So far they have done everything right, he

:04:16. > :04:37.has won five points in a row. This 28-year-old is from Avignon,

:04:38. > :04:44.Benoit Paire. Six tall, they call him the Stork, a man who hit 66

:04:45. > :04:55.winners in his previous match, 13 of those were drop shots. He is going

:04:56. > :05:14.to hit a lot of crop shots, maybe some shots you have not seen before.

:05:15. > :05:28.He has had a few run-ins, has Benoit Paire, notably at the Olympic Games

:05:29. > :05:33.in Rio, he didn't want to wear the official French kid or stay in the

:05:34. > :05:37.Olympic Village either. Wonderful defence from Murray - and

:05:38. > :05:45.anticipation too. First time on Centre Court for the

:05:46. > :06:29.Frenchman. Oh, that is well played, Paire, he

:06:30. > :06:34.was patient. Very good, he settled in with that point. A couple of

:06:35. > :06:38.times he had a look at the short ball to come in, that was one of

:06:39. > :06:44.them, short reply waiting for the ground stroke - this is good. Murray

:06:45. > :06:55.giving him a little present there, hitting the backhand high in the

:06:56. > :07:23.middle of the court. APPLAUSE

:07:24. > :07:30.That is his weaker side. During the course of this match,

:07:31. > :07:34.when Murray has a choice of whether to go to the forehand or backhand

:07:35. > :07:36.side, on the bigger point is, I suspect he will pick out the

:07:37. > :08:04.Frenchman's forehand as a target. And there is the difficult thing

:08:05. > :08:09.with Paire, you do not know which corner to take sometimes, so the

:08:10. > :08:14.backhand is very quick, he takes it early, and on the forehand it is the

:08:15. > :08:18.complete opposite. Thierry Champion on the right with the Black Watch,

:08:19. > :08:34.former player, he has been coaching Paire for a year.

:08:35. > :08:42.I think he was a top 100 player, we were playing around the same time,

:08:43. > :08:45.good on the clay court. He has got a project on his hands with Benoit

:08:46. > :09:05.park, certainly dealing with a talent.

:09:06. > :09:17.That is a big double. Intimidation factor on Centre Court, where the

:09:18. > :09:22.player has never played, and this is the most famous tennis court in the

:09:23. > :09:40.world, and unless you have played on it, you are bound to have nerves.

:09:41. > :09:48.Well, his backhand is just an all day long weapon, a wonderful stroke,

:09:49. > :10:00.short ball here, the ability to do much with the ball on that side.

:10:01. > :10:10.And that is the end of the game, and it was a good one. Just changed his

:10:11. > :10:16.mind there, Murray, thinking about the drop shot. This is rather like

:10:17. > :10:22.the match he might have enjoyed the other day with Ernests Gulbis versus

:10:23. > :10:27.Novak Djokovic, Gulbis certainly not favoured to win the match, but he

:10:28. > :10:35.threw everything against the man who was favoured. He sort of run out of

:10:36. > :10:53.steam towards the end - or actually in the middle.

:10:54. > :11:03.Murray tries to dictate the points early, it is the right thing to do.

:11:04. > :11:47.You are bound to make a couple more unforced errors.

:11:48. > :12:17.Yeah, there it is, watch out for that one.

:12:18. > :13:39.That was better by Murray, the shots had a bit more power on them.

:13:40. > :13:50.And he has made it on that Rob Bonnet, that is a beautifully played

:13:51. > :14:22.shot. -- on the drop volley, that is a beautifully played shot.

:14:23. > :14:29.After a difficult first service game, on the other hand, I am a

:14:30. > :14:41.little bit surprised by the tactics of Murray. Indeed, well, there is

:14:42. > :14:47.the break. SUE BARKER: Hmm, worrying times for Andy Murray in the opening

:14:48. > :14:52.stages of this match. Jo Konta is one break back, but Garcia is

:14:53. > :14:58.serving for the set once again. Jo Konta fighting hard, that much over

:14:59. > :15:04.on BBC One, Jo having won the first set, Garcia serving for the second,

:15:05. > :15:07.that is over on BBC One. Back we go to Centre Court.

:15:08. > :15:14.A job on their hands, Jamie Delgado and a ban land, I wonder what you

:15:15. > :15:20.can say when you are playing against Benoit part or preparing someone for

:15:21. > :15:32.a match against him. I guess just concentrate on your own game. I

:15:33. > :15:39.thought Andy's first game was good, although at times a bit too passive.

:15:40. > :15:56.Leading the other player dictate too much

:15:57. > :16:03.A little bit of ill fortune for Murray, certainly not going his way

:16:04. > :16:11.today so far. He had to turn here, some would say

:16:12. > :16:17.he would have made that 99 times out of 100 normally. That is partly

:16:18. > :18:19.Paire's game plan. Well, you have to say that the least

:18:20. > :18:26.two of those points, maybe three, were a donation to the Andy Murray

:18:27. > :18:30.winning Wimbledon again fund! I mean, you have a break serve and

:18:31. > :18:40.then throw in a drop shot on second point? 15-0 up?

:18:41. > :18:47.How can you coach a guy like this? I mean, the word is that he doesn't

:18:48. > :18:51.overwork, and yet he has played every single week that was available

:18:52. > :18:57.to him to play tournaments, nobody has played more on the circuit, so

:18:58. > :19:11.he likes to play - not train. I can understand that.

:19:12. > :19:34.Talking about his backwards movement, it is a bit slow.

:19:35. > :19:53.Magnificent, this, back-spin giving a little bit of air, it bites into

:19:54. > :20:04.the turf and would have hit the net, I think. Either way. Three break

:20:05. > :21:14.points. This would be an important hold for

:21:15. > :21:14.Murray, to settle the ship a little bit.

:21:15. > :21:39.Still break points Paire. That is a very fine approach, on a

:21:40. > :21:44.slightly weaker side, and he has broken again, and Murray is having a

:21:45. > :21:50.right rant and they rave about his player's box.

:21:51. > :21:57.And the reason he is having a rant and they rave is that Paire is

:21:58. > :22:01.playing well, and a couple of times Andy will feel he should have got

:22:02. > :22:08.the ball deeper or into a better place, but either way he is losing.

:22:09. > :22:12.And as we said at the top of the programme, very difficult to find

:22:13. > :22:19.the right strategy against Paire, because nobody plays like that. Who

:22:20. > :22:30.would do six drop shots by now? Run around the forehand? Murray has

:22:31. > :22:34.played Alexander Bublik in the first round, pretty eccentric, Dustin

:22:35. > :22:38.Brown was somebody who was happy to play any sort of game to get the job

:22:39. > :22:42.done. You have got to love these guys having a go, then Fabio

:22:43. > :22:46.Fognini, and there is only one of him, I can tell you that! Great

:22:47. > :22:56.match, Murray had to win the last five games to get through, and now

:22:57. > :22:57.Benoit Paire. They played last year in Monte Carlo, so they have a bit

:22:58. > :23:37.of history between the two. Just as in the last game where he

:23:38. > :23:43.had a break of serve, Benoit Paire comic he goes for the drop shot and

:23:44. > :23:48.loses the point with a 15-0 lead. 30-0 and you are odds-on to hold

:23:49. > :24:08.your serve, 15-0, even Stephens again. Even Stephen, highlighted!

:24:09. > :24:16.I think he is debating with his coaching team, they want him to step

:24:17. > :24:17.into the court and take it earlier, where his comfort zone is more

:24:18. > :24:34.behind the baseline. That is very, very crucial, that the

:24:35. > :24:50.coaching team and player have to agree on what is right.

:24:51. > :25:09.Writes a pretty unconventional starts to a match, isn't it?

:25:10. > :25:17.Especially on a grass court, Andy Murray has made 15 out of 16 first

:25:18. > :26:11.serves and has lost his serve twice. It is very weird.

:26:12. > :27:09.Longest rally of the match so far, 17 strokes.

:27:10. > :27:11.And I think the best one for Andy Murray, starting to lift his game a

:27:12. > :28:19.little bit - it is time! The courts get a nice rest on this

:28:20. > :28:37.middle Sunday, but just catching a ridge.

:28:38. > :28:50.Well, that backhand is a gift, isn't it?

:28:51. > :28:56.Beautiful shot, not a bad second serve, just into the comfort zone of

:28:57. > :29:16.Benoit Paire - nothing you can do about it.

:29:17. > :29:20.That is an unforced air on the forehand that he needs to try and

:29:21. > :30:02.avoid. -- unforced error. That was hit into the body of the

:30:03. > :30:14.Frenchman, and he had to run around - and missed it.

:30:15. > :30:37.APPLAUSE UMPIRE: New balls, please. It was an

:30:38. > :30:46.important old, he could not afford to go to macro breaks down. 4-3,

:30:47. > :30:48.Paire. Murray is holding on, fighting hard

:30:49. > :30:52.in the first set but still a break of serve to the Frenchman. We will

:30:53. > :30:56.be back on Centre Court soon but on Court Number One, Britain's number

:30:57. > :31:01.when you Ana Konjuh is fighting hard, 2-2 in the third and final set

:31:02. > :31:07.against Caroline Garcia. That matches on BBC One so Johanna Konta

:31:08. > :31:10.on BBC One, 2-2 in the third set. But we are heading back to Centre

:31:11. > :31:18.Court, so much happening on this very busy day at Wimbledon.

:31:19. > :31:26.ANDREW CASTLE: Carl Froch, delighted to see him up in the box, the Cobra,

:31:27. > :31:28.out of Nottingham, three-time super middleweight champion and another

:31:29. > :31:35.double world champion, there, David Haigh. Cruiserweight and heavyweight

:31:36. > :31:41.champion of the world. Great sports stars up there today, Sir Ben

:31:42. > :31:46.Ainslie, the successful sailor -- most successful sailor in Olympic

:31:47. > :31:47.history with his wife on the right-hand side, there, enjoying

:31:48. > :32:01.their day. A nice tradition to bring all of the

:32:02. > :32:03.sports stars out and give them seek in the Royal Box. Brian Moore, the

:32:04. > :32:17.esteemed rugby commentator. Paire with the break in hand.

:32:18. > :32:26.UMPIRE: Please take your seat, sir. Thank you. Laying down the law.

:32:27. > :33:05.The third time he is at 15-0 and the third time he did the drop shot,

:33:06. > :33:22.trying to lose the point, it seems like, anyway.

:33:23. > :33:42.He got that ball toss so far up and in front, really got after that,

:33:43. > :33:44.with an angular motion. He seems like a big bundle of nerves but he

:33:45. > :34:12.somehow holds it together. The number six in France plays like

:34:13. > :34:20.this, two Frenchman in the last 16 of Wimbledon in action today, Manor

:34:21. > :34:28.Reno against Djokovic, the other. -- Adrian Mannarino against Djokovic.

:34:29. > :34:37.You almost get the impression that he refuses to play the point,

:34:38. > :34:57.sometimes. Like, "No, I don't want to".

:34:58. > :35:13.And the book serves up in the Royal Box will appreciate the work going

:35:14. > :35:20.in on the Paire forehand side, a bit like working the ribs. And

:35:21. > :35:33.eventually, reaping the reward. Don't miss.

:35:34. > :35:52.And I'm not sure whether that was meant that way. It is fragile, the

:35:53. > :35:56.forehand side, isn't it? It could go anyway, he could play a drop shot,

:35:57. > :36:01.hit the winner, or miss. UMPIRE: Let, first service. It makes it so

:36:02. > :37:12.difficult for Murray, where to play. So now, Benoit Paire has suffered a

:37:13. > :37:32.pair of breaks. Eight games played, four breaks of serve.

:37:33. > :37:46.Murray has just got to hold on now, just got to find a way to hold.

:37:47. > :37:49.Concentration is certainly holding. Andy Murray, in the last ten

:37:50. > :37:59.minutes, has really knuckled down to his task.

:38:00. > :38:21.You can see Joely Richardson in there, part of the Richardson

:38:22. > :38:22.Redgrave NST of acting, and Matthew Pinsent, all enjoying this much.

:38:23. > :38:43.Roger Federer later, as well. There she is, Joely Richardson.

:38:44. > :38:46.Leslie Manville is up there as well, a former actress of the year on this

:38:47. > :38:51.wonderful stage, Centre Court, today. UMPIRE: Stop, Mr Murray is

:38:52. > :39:00.challenging the call on the right baseline, the ball was called in.

:39:01. > :39:20.The point was stopped by Murray... UMPIRE: The call stands. 40-15.

:39:21. > :39:39.APPLAUSE UMPIRE: OK?

:39:40. > :39:43.That was pretty funny because the ball had a ready hit the backstop by

:39:44. > :39:47.the time Benoit Paire hit the ground. Boris, you are the diving

:39:48. > :39:53.bloke. Tell us what he did wrong, here. I'm still trying to make sense

:39:54. > :39:59.of it. The ball way past him, he throws the racket and then his body.

:40:00. > :40:08.I don't think that promises to much from the Frenchman. Eccentric,

:40:09. > :40:12.colourful. Lovable, different! Unpredictable. It won't surprise

:40:13. > :40:17.you, Boris, that his favourite player growing up was marriage is a

:40:18. > :40:27.thin. There you go. -- is favourite player growing up was. -- was Marat

:40:28. > :40:33.Safin. The game is the same, based on a massive backhand and

:40:34. > :40:35.individuality on court. Henman Hill is packed. Thousands of people

:40:36. > :40:56.watching it on the big screen. UMPIRE: Mr Murray has two challenges

:40:57. > :41:20.remaining. Magic Monday, everybody plays.

:41:21. > :41:38.Murray just held this parting shot. He likes to go crosscourt with these

:41:39. > :41:40.but just held it. -- passing shot. Did not overplay it down the line.

:41:41. > :41:55.You don't have to swing hard. He is certainly walking very

:41:56. > :42:12.awkwardly, isn't he? The first serve of Benoit Paire, to

:42:13. > :42:14.stay in this set, now. Walking like a man twice his age but running like

:42:15. > :42:35.a gazelle. Murray really trying to expose the

:42:36. > :43:26.Paire forehand, now. The right thing to do.

:43:27. > :43:34.APPLAUSE First-class second serve. You can

:43:35. > :43:38.call it a little bit lucky. Just clipped the line. After double

:43:39. > :44:03.faulting the previous one. Oh, that was a message backhand. In

:44:04. > :44:05.a way, this is how the game has changed, the base, the physicality

:44:06. > :44:08.bees players hit from, you can't just play tennis to get that

:44:09. > :44:19.strength. It requires off court work.

:44:20. > :44:26.The quality has improved. It is becoming a really good tennis match

:44:27. > :45:27.now. Well, Paire is shouting at his box.

:45:28. > :45:44.Obviously in French! I couldn't tell you.

:45:45. > :47:08.Andy Murray looking to make his tenth consecutive quarterfinal at

:47:09. > :47:12.the Championships. Only Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors have

:47:13. > :47:15.achieved ten quarterfinals in a row at the same Grand Slam championship,

:47:16. > :47:18.they did it with a couple of Grand Slams each but it is a remarkable

:47:19. > :47:21.record and he can call upon so many happy memories of this court, the

:47:22. > :47:28.first of his Olympic gold medals came here at London 2012, and he

:47:29. > :47:33.backed it up with victory in Rio 2016. So a genuine superstar of the

:47:34. > :47:35.game who really, in some ways, Boris, is thinking that the

:47:36. > :47:40.tournament is just beginning for him. Three matches last week

:47:41. > :47:44.including Fognini but four this week. That's right. He's got an

:47:45. > :47:51.amazing record here and it shows you how important this tournament is for

:47:52. > :47:54.him, having been obviously born and raised with Wimbledon but to achieve

:47:55. > :48:00.that takes a lot of character and a lot of practice over the years. He

:48:01. > :48:09.is expected to be in the second week. And he knows that the job at

:48:10. > :48:15.hand will get more and more difficult. That has been the

:48:16. > :48:30.storyline a little bit of the first set so far.

:48:31. > :48:39.UMPIRE: Mr Paire is challenging the call on the right service line. The

:48:40. > :48:41.ball was called out. SLOW CLAPPING It does not look like a convinced

:48:42. > :49:11.challenge. UMPIRE: The call stands. Well, it was not a bad play, was it?

:49:12. > :49:19.Knocking it insured. Murray actually handled this very well. -- insured.

:49:20. > :49:30.That is the fourth time he has done it, played the drop shot at 15-0.

:49:31. > :49:50.Oh, yes, the old serve and reverse forehand drop volley play!

:49:51. > :50:00.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE This is so irritating for Benoit

:50:01. > :50:05.Paire's camp. It must be, and for him, as Murray surges to two break

:50:06. > :50:10.points, which are set points. This is not the play. It is just too

:50:11. > :50:35.easy. Beautiful shot. Yes, and he could

:50:36. > :50:41.have hit the forehand but the backhand is better.

:50:42. > :50:50.Paire is playing or nothing, now. -- all or nothing.

:50:51. > :51:10.Did you see the backspin on that? Lee Westwood is up there in the

:51:11. > :51:15.Royal Box, and Ernie Els. They would have appreciated this one. This

:51:16. > :51:19.being just stopped dead on the court. It might have even come back

:51:20. > :51:31.and it was only set points down, mind you.

:51:32. > :51:44.Oh, well played, sir. It must be so frustrating for Murray.

:51:45. > :51:50.So close to winning the first set and getting a bit of control of the

:51:51. > :52:04.match and the next thing you know, it is game point, Paire.

:52:05. > :52:21.Tie-break it is. UMPIRE: Both players receive one additional

:52:22. > :52:25.challenge. The first tie-break for Murray here at the Championships,

:52:26. > :52:30.Benoit Paire played a very important one against Jerzy Janowicz and also

:52:31. > :52:33.had one against the yen Hugues-Herbert but the key one was

:52:34. > :52:37.against Dutra Silva in the first round and he won that, 12-10, to

:52:38. > :52:59.take a 2-1 set lead. Murray has got to stay solid now,

:53:00. > :53:21.has got to weather the storm. UMPIRE: Let, first service.

:53:22. > :53:51.That was a bad time for that. Six doubles.

:53:52. > :53:58.APPLAUSE He dropped his racket in

:53:59. > :54:53.frustration. APPLAUSE

:54:54. > :54:59.One-way traffic here on Centre Court. First set of this

:55:00. > :55:21.fourth-round match. Her boy is well in control at 5-0.

:55:22. > :55:32.APPLAUSE The way the first set has been going

:55:33. > :55:37.I'm not surprised one bit about the scoreline in the tie-breaker. Do you

:55:38. > :55:45.think Paire was absolutely on the limit of his play? Just the absolute

:55:46. > :55:52.limit of unpredictability. And then a tie-break, it is not complicated

:55:53. > :56:15.shots that you are looking for, it is simplicity, often. UMPIRE: Let.

:56:16. > :56:27.APPLAUSE He has got an honourable point. Yes,

:56:28. > :56:55.you don't want to lose a breaker 7-0.

:56:56. > :57:03.And it is a win, 7-1. First set, Murray, and from 4-2 down in the

:57:04. > :57:09.first set, he was under threat but came through.

:57:10. > :57:16.SUE BARKER: We have seen this so many times before when Andy Murray

:57:17. > :57:19.is put under pressure but somehow he finds a way to come through it, and

:57:20. > :57:24.has taken the opening set. We are leaving this on BBC Two but don't

:57:25. > :57:30.worry, if you want to watch it, it is on BBC One so Andy Murray's match

:57:31. > :57:34.is now on BBC One. Here on BBC Two, let's round up the stories of the

:57:35. > :57:36.day so far and great news for Britain's Johanna Konta, this

:57:37. > :57:43.happened a short time ago on Court Number One, an error from Caroline

:57:44. > :57:48.Garcia and a very emotional Johanna Konta, falling to her knees. This is

:57:49. > :57:51.how much it means to her to be through to her first-ever Wimbledon

:57:52. > :57:56.quarterfinal and what a battle she had against a very talented

:57:57. > :58:01.Frenchwoman on Garcia, but she fought so hard. No sign of nerves

:58:02. > :58:05.but huge emotion and the crowd were absolutely delighted, the first time

:58:06. > :58:08.there has been a British woman through to the quarterfinals since

:58:09. > :58:16.Jo Durie in 1984. What a story and let's hear what she had to say after

:58:17. > :58:20.the match. Huge congratulations. We saw you after the final point, the

:58:21. > :58:26.reaction, just give us an idea of what you are feeling. To be honest,

:58:27. > :58:31.it was just so, such a tough match to play, she is really in impressive

:58:32. > :58:35.form so it is very hard to get any rhythm really out there when she is

:58:36. > :58:38.serving so well and she really gets her first strike in. It was a bit

:58:39. > :58:42.breezy which also made it a bit difficult for both of us. But

:58:43. > :58:48.overall, I think it was more that I was happy, I was able to get enough

:58:49. > :58:51.returns in in that game and I was really trying to stay light on my

:58:52. > :58:56.feet and strong through my body, really, to try and neutralise her.

:58:57. > :59:00.Forges seesawed throughout the match. Most definitely come again,

:59:01. > :59:05.there was very little between us today. I was happy with how I could

:59:06. > :59:08.compete and did not pay too much attention to necessarily the good

:59:09. > :59:11.things that she was doing and try to keep in mind the good things I was

:59:12. > :59:15.doing. We saw in your match against Donna Vekic are you seemed to relish

:59:16. > :59:20.the top situations and you've done it again in front of a home crowd.

:59:21. > :59:24.What is it -- what is it about the challenges you relish so much? To be

:59:25. > :59:29.honest, it is those positions, those situations that I dream of, I dreamt

:59:30. > :59:33.of when I was a little girl, and even now, to be part of those

:59:34. > :59:38.battles on big stages. I think that is really what it is about, to be a

:59:39. > :59:42.professional athlete. Speaking about dreams when you were a little girl,

:59:43. > :59:46.you are the first British woman to a quarterfinal at Wimbledon since Jo

:59:47. > :59:51.Durie in 1984. What does that mean to you? That's pretty special! Yeah,

:59:52. > :59:56.very excited about that and really looking forward to the fact I get to

:59:57. > :00:02.play again. Well done today, huge congratulations. Thank you. Proving

:00:03. > :00:05.yet again what a great match player she is achieved through to the last

:00:06. > :00:08.day tomorrow, and she will play the winner of the match we are dropping

:00:09. > :00:13.into now on Court Number Two between Simona Halep, the number two seed,

:00:14. > :00:18.there she is, up against Victoria Azarenka. Simona Halep is a set and

:00:19. > :00:21.3-0 up, and a points to make it 4-0 so let's drawn-out commentators,

:00:22. > :00:38.Annabel Croft and Matt Chilton. Really tightly contested opening

:00:39. > :00:41.set. The first set was decided via the tie-break. Since then,

:00:42. > :00:53.Azarenka's game has rather disintegrated. Having been in

:00:54. > :00:55.contention for the first hour, she's got an awful lot to do to get akin

:00:56. > :01:09.to this. Yes, too many unforced errors

:01:10. > :01:14.flowing off her racket. And she has been left unbalanced when playing on

:01:15. > :01:34.the back foot, pushed behind the baseline.

:01:35. > :01:46.A look of despair on the face of Victoria Azarenka, another first

:01:47. > :01:52.serve in the middle of the net. It has been a noisy match, hasn't it?

:01:53. > :01:56.Very noisy, maximum volume from both players. Simona Halep never seemed

:01:57. > :02:02.to get stressed out in that opening set, despite being a breakdown a

:02:03. > :02:13.couple of times. Azarenka, has been far more emotional. Good serve, best

:02:14. > :02:22.we have seen for a while from Victoria Azarenka. , it was a

:02:23. > :02:24.fantastic serve, it really had some swerve on it, came around the

:02:25. > :02:40.outside of the bulge -- of the ball. Well, we have

:02:41. > :02:48.had this trouble throughout the match, the baseline at Azarenka's

:02:49. > :02:54.end is smudged. It had a 3-set match on it before, involving Muguruza and

:02:55. > :02:57.Angelique Kerber, and it's difficult for the players to spot the

:02:58. > :03:08.baseline. It's the second time Azarenka has got that wrong.

:03:09. > :03:11.The courts have taken a real pounding in the first week, with the

:03:12. > :03:35.hot weather. Halep has been pretty miserly with

:03:36. > :03:58.the unforced errors - that's just her eighth.

:03:59. > :04:10.ANNABEL CROFT: That's a fantastic shot. Really, this match shares you

:04:11. > :04:14.said, in that first set, there was so little between them. It was very

:04:15. > :04:19.much about who could get inside the baseline, on the front foot and

:04:20. > :04:26.controlling the play. MATT CHILTON: Seven and a half

:04:27. > :04:34.minutes for this game. Oh, that's perfect from Simona Halep! What a

:04:35. > :04:37.shot! Yeah, using the pace of the serve there. Coming right round the

:04:38. > :04:57.outside of the net post almost. Halep has done brilliantly! What a

:04:58. > :05:05.point! Amazing sprint from the back of the court to pick up the drop

:05:06. > :05:10.shot. It was a great pick-up from Azarenka, but look at the foot speed

:05:11. > :05:16.of Halep - she's so nimble and agile around the court, can change

:05:17. > :05:18.direction. And she was in control of the racket face when she got there

:05:19. > :05:35.as well. A scream of relief, more than

:05:36. > :05:45.anything, I think, from Victoria Azarenka. She needed to get that

:05:46. > :06:09.out! Already had one warning for chucking her racket.

:06:10. > :06:25.To strong. Loose again from Victoria Azarenka, who has now hit 29

:06:26. > :06:28.unforced errors. Michael Joice is living every shot with his charge

:06:29. > :06:40.here this afternoon. There is another loose one. It looks as if

:06:41. > :06:42.the fairy tale return to tennis, after having given birth to her son,

:06:43. > :07:15.is coming to an end this afternoon. If you didn't think you were

:07:16. > :07:38.watching a tennis match, you would think they were both in pain.

:07:39. > :07:55.Halep is just not missing anything. 5-0 in front, what a dominant second

:07:56. > :07:59.set. And her coach is thrilled. Well, her level has gone up and up

:08:00. > :08:03.and up from about midway through that first set. She's really

:08:04. > :08:07.battened down the hatches, no real unforced errors or loose shots,

:08:08. > :08:14.she's really working hard, intensity levels, so good. She's on a roll

:08:15. > :08:19.right now, and you can't see any change up in this now. We're quickly

:08:20. > :08:28.heading towards the finish line. Azarenka is cutting quite detected

:08:29. > :08:34.figure at the moment. -- quite a dejected figure at the moment. She

:08:35. > :08:37.defeated Heather Watson in three sets are defying expectations in

:08:38. > :08:46.many ways, getting to this stage of the tournament, to the last 16. I

:08:47. > :08:51.think it's been incredible what she's achieved already in this

:08:52. > :08:55.tournament. She had only played a few matches before coming into

:08:56. > :09:01.bumbled and, having had a baby, not having been seen on the tour since

:09:02. > :09:04.the French Open last year. I guess she is now paying the price, up

:09:05. > :09:10.against a player who has played so many matches, just really, really

:09:11. > :09:21.match tight, that's the biggest difference between the two of them.

:09:22. > :09:22.There's Michael Joyce, it could be all over for him, and for Victoria

:09:23. > :09:43.Azarenka. Oh, she was there. Even from that

:09:44. > :09:51.last point, you can see her anticipation, she's reading the

:09:52. > :09:55.play. Johanna Konta will play the winner of this one, and it looks

:09:56. > :10:17.increasingly like it will be Simona Halep.

:10:18. > :10:26.I don't think either of them have returned serve as well as you would

:10:27. > :11:28.respected -- as you would have expected, actually.

:11:29. > :11:38.Oh, what a shot! The very best of Victoria Azarenka. It may be too

:11:39. > :11:47.little, too leg, but that was a shot to save. Yeah, shower at off the

:11:48. > :11:57.angle on the move there, and such a loss of change of direction. -- such

:11:58. > :12:20.a great change of direction. This is where she needs to keep

:12:21. > :12:24.everything under control, kicked that intensity level up. Of course

:12:25. > :12:33.it will be at the back of her mind, what happened at the French Open.

:12:34. > :12:39.That's a fabulous shot. She was so in control of that match against

:12:40. > :12:47.Ostapenko, let that lead slip. Let a lead slip against Wozniacki in

:12:48. > :12:54.Eastbourne ahead of this. So, there's a little bit of? There. She

:12:55. > :12:55.needs to close this out. That serve was all about direction, rather than

:12:56. > :13:18.pace. Exasperation now spilling over for

:13:19. > :13:31.Victoria Azarenka. She knows she better than this.

:13:32. > :13:39.Into the net, and one more time, Azarenka stares at the turf. Her

:13:40. > :13:47.Wimbledon just about over now, after her 30th unforced error. 90 minutes

:13:48. > :13:54.since the match began, and Simona Halep has match point.

:13:55. > :14:12.You can sense the tension in Halep Sheila play right now, because at

:14:13. > :14:16.the moment there is not a lot on her ball, she's almost playing and

:14:17. > :14:27.hoping that Azarenka is going to miss.

:14:28. > :14:37.Fantastic return again from Azarenka. She's not finished with

:14:38. > :14:41.this just yet. There was an interesting reaction there from

:14:42. > :14:43.Halep at the end of that point, looking up at Darren Cahill and a

:14:44. > :15:04.little bit of applause there. Oh, lovely touch! Azarenka is

:15:05. > :15:14.battling her way back! She's broken Halep's serve.

:15:15. > :15:23.Well, what a fightback from Victoria Azarenka. Real determination and

:15:24. > :15:29.grit about the way she's performed in the last couple of games. Simona

:15:30. > :15:35.Halep is just struggling to finish this off. A place in the

:15:36. > :15:40.quarterfinals at Wimbledon at stake. Huge moment for Simona Halep, a

:15:41. > :15:46.chance to take on Johanna Konta on Centre Court tomorrow, you would

:15:47. > :15:53.imagine. Well, here's that reaction we talked about. Quite interesting

:15:54. > :16:00.moment, that. I don't know whether that was about, you told me to serve

:16:01. > :16:05.on the forehand on a big point, and she got nailed on it! There's

:16:06. > :16:11.usually a bit of backchat going on. It will definitely be in her mind,

:16:12. > :16:14.what's happened in the recent past. Yeah, particularly that French Open

:16:15. > :16:25.final. It is that fear of the finish line, and you can sense that. Darren

:16:26. > :16:35.Cahill looks a little wound up for the first time.

:16:36. > :16:58.Azarenka, serving to stay in the match - again.

:16:59. > :17:10.That's a big shot. Well, that BRAVE that time. Good footwork, dancing

:17:11. > :17:18.around the FSA, striking it into the forehand corner. Likes to move out

:17:19. > :17:54.to that side. Didn't hold back that time.

:17:55. > :18:01.She's hitting absolutely exasperated with herself. It's more about her

:18:02. > :18:10.footwork, I think, the mind is willing, the body hasn't quite

:18:11. > :18:12.followed behind it. Michael Joyce is doing his best from a distance to

:18:13. > :18:27.try and help her along. In the opening set, which was very

:18:28. > :18:29.tight, decided on a tie-break, Azarenka had so much success when

:18:30. > :18:58.she was prepared to come to the net. Too strong that time. Two more match

:18:59. > :19:16.points for the number two seed. He doesn't give much away, does he,

:19:17. > :20:04.up there? Cool as a cucumber. Victoria Azarenka, scrapping for

:20:05. > :20:44.everything here. She WILL not let this go.

:20:45. > :20:54.It's out. UMPIRE: Miss Halep is challenging

:20:55. > :21:00.the call, the ball was called out. I'm not sure she's going to have to

:21:01. > :21:04.much look. There was that look again up at Darren in the support camp.

:21:05. > :21:36.He's trying to calm her down, I think. Definitely nerves jangling.

:21:37. > :21:42.Too strong from Halep! Down the line, to give her another match

:21:43. > :22:10.point. It's wide, and Halep will play

:22:11. > :22:17.Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals! Victoria Azarenka's return to tennis

:22:18. > :22:21.ends in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Three very good

:22:22. > :22:32.victories, but in the end she came up against the world number two.

:22:33. > :22:40.Simona Halep relishes that win over Victoria Azarenka. Yes, huge relief

:22:41. > :22:43.for Darren Cahill and a lovely smile on the face of Simona Halep. She

:22:44. > :22:48.really had to dig deep to control her nerves - well done. A straight

:22:49. > :23:00.sets win for Simona Halep. SUE BARKER: Very impressive indeed,

:23:01. > :23:05.she's such a good mover around the court and also a great Matchplay.

:23:06. > :23:10.So, Simona Halep is through to the last eight, where she will meet Jo

:23:11. > :23:14.Konta of Great Britain. Earlier today, she beat Caroline Garcia of

:23:15. > :23:20.France out on Court No. 1. There was so little between them until that

:23:21. > :23:23.last game. And you can see what it meant to Jo. All the expectation on

:23:24. > :23:30.her shoulders, but she held her nerve and was rock solid right at

:23:31. > :23:33.the end. Through to the quarterfinals here at Wimbledon for

:23:34. > :23:36.the very first time. She met Simona Halep twice before, and Jo has won

:23:37. > :23:42.both of them, including at Miami this year, although both went to

:23:43. > :23:45.three sets. If Halep does beat Jo Konta, then she will be the new

:23:46. > :23:53.world number one. So much to play for in that match which will be

:23:54. > :23:56.tomorrow. And so much to play for over on Centre Court, where it has

:23:57. > :23:59.been a little tense for Andy Murray. He was a break of serve up in this

:24:00. > :24:11.second set, but it's now level. Andy did take the first set on the

:24:12. > :24:22.tie-break. You can watch that one over on BBC One. Now, let's check on

:24:23. > :24:28.results from earlier today. Garbine Muguruza, former French Open

:24:29. > :24:37.champion and finalist here, defeated Angelique Kerber 6-4 in the final

:24:38. > :24:44.set. Disappointment for Kerber, who will lose the world number one spot.

:24:45. > :24:48.It's Muguruza, whose game is so suited to these grass courts, who is

:24:49. > :24:53.through to the last eight, where she will place that Lana Kuznetsova.

:24:54. > :25:10.Kuznetsova defeated Aga Radwanska in straight sets.

:25:11. > :25:19.Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia came through. What a story this has

:25:20. > :25:23.been, she came and played at Surbiton, and also at Nottingham.

:25:24. > :25:26.She has played herself into form, and she's through to the last eight

:25:27. > :25:33.here at Wimbledon for the very first time. What a story that is. Not

:25:34. > :25:40.seeded at the Championships, but through to the last eight. And

:25:41. > :25:43.tomorrow, she will meet Coco Vandeweghe, who pulled off a

:25:44. > :25:49.surprise by beating Caroline Wozniacki, the former world number

:25:50. > :25:53.one. Coco Vandeweghe, coached by Pat Cash, who was encouraging her to

:25:54. > :25:56.serve big and to be aggressive from the back of the court. And she

:25:57. > :26:07.didn't let Wozniacki settle in that match. So, the 24th seed also

:26:08. > :26:12.through to the last eight. No problems, either, for five times

:26:13. > :26:20.champion Venus Williams, seeded ten at this tournament. She defeated Ana

:26:21. > :26:29.Konjuh of Croatia, one of the up-and-coming players. The

:26:30. > :26:35.37-year-old Venus goes through. She's met 219-year-olds, and now she

:26:36. > :26:45.will meet a 20-year-old, Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated Svitolina,

:26:46. > :26:48.6-3, sevensix. The French Open champion hit 42 winners, she really

:26:49. > :26:55.is fearless and ferocious on the court and she won it with her eighth

:26:56. > :27:01.match point. She will be through to face Venus Williams - that will be

:27:02. > :27:04.one to look forward to as well! Only the one men's match has been

:27:05. > :27:10.decided, and Marin Cilic, the seventh seed, was in a hurry,

:27:11. > :27:18.defeating Bautista Agut in straight sets. He's always dangerous on a

:27:19. > :27:25.grass court. And he's being coached by Jonas Bjorkman. I spoke to him,

:27:26. > :27:27.and he said he was telling him to be aggressive and get inside the

:27:28. > :27:35.baseline, and he's certainly doing that. Marin Cilic, through to the

:27:36. > :27:41.quarterfinals, for the fourth straight year. Over on Court No. 3,

:27:42. > :27:53.the eighth seed, Dominic Thiem, is in trouble against Tom Burdick.

:27:54. > :27:57.Sodding against Tomas Berdych. Rugolo see both players here, on the

:27:58. > :28:05.red button and on the BBC Sport website. Around we go again! Sam

:28:06. > :28:09.Querrey has come back, after dropping the first set to Kevin

:28:10. > :28:20.Anderson. But Sam Querrey has come back to take the second and third

:28:21. > :28:26.set, and it's 3-3 in the fourth. We'll be heading to Court No. 1 in a

:28:27. > :28:28.moment. Rafa Nadal is on court at the moment, but something rather

:28:29. > :28:33.strange happened to him just as he was coming on to court am awaiting

:28:34. > :28:41.with Gilles Muller there. We know he has all of these superstitions. And

:28:42. > :28:47.then... Now, he hits his head on the door frame! Gilles Muller turns

:28:48. > :28:54.around, are you all right?! He goes, I think so! But he gives his head a

:28:55. > :29:01.bit of a rubber on the way out! He sees the funny side, well done,

:29:02. > :29:09.Rafa! That was a short time ago with Rafa. I think he's absolutely fine,

:29:10. > :29:14.the match is already under way. And we'll be joining that match, Rafa

:29:15. > :29:26.against Gilles Muller, who's a real ace machine. We can now join that

:29:27. > :29:30.match, and Rafa has a break point as we join it. We can now join Jamie

:29:31. > :30:17.Baker and Simon Reed for this one. That is as good a shot as he has

:30:18. > :30:23.played in the match. The classic one-two punch from Gilles Muller.

:30:24. > :30:23.Look how simple that backhand is, straight back and through, direct

:30:24. > :30:32.tactics. Didn't he respond to the danger

:30:33. > :30:51.immediately? So chances are that this could

:30:52. > :30:56.develop into a really good scrap between two very different players.

:30:57. > :31:00.There's been a lot of talk about Rafa Nadal, is he playing better

:31:01. > :31:04.tennis now than he ever has? We've been looking at a few things to

:31:05. > :31:09.compare with the last time he won at Wimbledon in 2010 and this year.

:31:10. > :31:14.Particularly his backhand, he is hitting fewer forehands than he was

:31:15. > :31:18.when he won in 2010. Everyone is talking about how he is running

:31:19. > :31:21.around less. We are used to seeing him in the tramlines. That is the

:31:22. > :31:25.best thing, he's hitting more backhand and secondly, this is where

:31:26. > :31:30.it gets interesting, he is also hitting his backhand quicker and

:31:31. > :31:35.with more spin so 79 mph if his average backhand speed this year

:31:36. > :31:40.compared with 76 mph in 2010. And this is where it gets even slightly

:31:41. > :31:49.more interesting is that actually, in terms of his contact point, here

:31:50. > :31:53.it is, in 2010, 19% of his backhand 's were inside the baseline and this

:31:54. > :31:58.year so far, 29%. Everybody knows the firepower Rafa Nadal has on the

:31:59. > :32:01.forehand side but as an opponent, do think that if you drop the ball

:32:02. > :32:05.short anywhere on the court, he's going to step in on the backhand,

:32:06. > :32:07.that is unbelievably difficult to play against. No hiding place.

:32:08. > :32:51.Absolutely. A good return. 26 is his

:32:52. > :32:53.career-high, Nadal at two and if he gets to the final, he will go number

:32:54. > :33:04.one. UMPIRE: Mr Muller is challenging the

:33:05. > :33:11.call on the right-hand service line. The ball is called in.

:33:12. > :33:42.That was a chance, there. He might not get a better one to really put

:33:43. > :33:45.the pressure on Rafa. You can see what he was trying to do, the slice

:33:46. > :33:47.really did the job of staying low and he gave himself the opportunity

:33:48. > :34:22.of the short forehand. Nadal has won 28th successive sets

:34:23. > :34:26.in Grand Slams between Rome and Gareth and now the first half of

:34:27. > :34:28.this tournament. -- in Roland Garros and now the first half of this

:34:29. > :35:08.tournament. Really well played, Gilles Muller.

:35:09. > :35:13.Not given the credit for too much skill but there was a lot of skill

:35:14. > :35:15.in that. There really was and so far in these baseline exchanges, Muller

:35:16. > :35:49.is more than holding his own. Another good return. 125 mph serve,

:35:50. > :36:27.no problem for Muller, who has got break point.

:36:28. > :36:36.Nadal got lucky with the net cord. But it was inviting for Muller. That

:36:37. > :37:17.was a big second serve for Nadal, 101 mph, into the body.

:37:18. > :37:27.Exquisite touch. APPLAUSE And super ground strokes to set it

:37:28. > :37:30.up. Absolutely fantastic. This shot here, back behind Nadal, refusing to

:37:31. > :37:39.give him a running forehand pass and there is the touch to finish it off.

:37:40. > :38:14.This sets up a second break point. APPLAUSE

:38:15. > :38:21.Oh, wow, so much to applaud. What a forehand. They must be thrilled. But

:38:22. > :38:26.his returning has been brilliant. Any time he has had a chance to get

:38:27. > :38:30.on a second serve, or the first serve has not been accurate enough,

:38:31. > :38:36.he has been very aggressive, trying to get the first hit in, keep Nadal

:38:37. > :38:40.on his back foot, and it has worked so far. And Nadal knows a break down

:38:41. > :39:07.against mullah is not a place you want to be. -- against Muller.

:39:08. > :39:54.APPLAUSE Just clipped the top of the net

:39:55. > :40:10.which didn't help Rafa. It is all going Muller's way at the moment.

:40:11. > :40:47.APPLAUSE Three aces, now.

:40:48. > :41:37.APPLAUSE Nadal chasing in after that

:41:38. > :42:09.backhand. APPLAUSE

:42:10. > :42:11.UMPIRE: New balls, please. There seems no doubt about Gilles Muller

:42:12. > :42:24.this afternoon. Well, this is not what we expected.

:42:25. > :42:29.Neither of us expected Muller to be this good at the start. Know, and we

:42:30. > :42:32.talked about the Nadal confidence, just starting to see the first

:42:33. > :42:37.couple of looks up to his box where the confidence perhaps if slightly

:42:38. > :42:39.in doubt. You know, I was out on Court 14 this morning watching him

:42:40. > :42:43.practice and he was absolutely ripping the ball as hard as the

:42:44. > :42:48.good, very intimidating for a player to actually see that. However, I've

:42:49. > :42:53.noticed at the start of this match, he's probably hitting the ball only

:42:54. > :42:56.two thirds of that place so it is amazing what a matchup and what a

:42:57. > :43:00.match can do. I was watching a bit of practice, two and the interesting

:43:01. > :43:04.thing with Rafa in practice if he hits the forehand much flatter and

:43:05. > :43:09.really follows through whereas in matches, it is like a Lasse Svan

:43:10. > :43:13.goes over the back of his head. And I think it depends on the style of

:43:14. > :43:16.player he is playing, on the grass, and the moment in the match because

:43:17. > :43:21.that extra spin you are talking about is giving him a bit of extra

:43:22. > :43:26.margin at a certain point in time in the match.

:43:27. > :43:44.After just 28 minutes, Nadal serving to stay in the set.

:43:45. > :43:50.UMPIRE: Mr Nadal challenging the call. The ball was called out. Not

:43:51. > :43:55.much space between ball and line here, if any. SLOW CLAPPING

:43:56. > :44:25.15-0. So much time. He is coping with all

:44:26. > :44:29.the spin so well. And really, when you see Nadal in this position with

:44:30. > :44:31.the forehand, you would not expect Muller to have the time to hit a

:44:32. > :44:58.winner off it. The drop shots are working! And they

:44:59. > :45:01.need to. Yes, that is two out of two and you are expecting the big

:45:02. > :45:07.forehand. Very hard to read the drop shot.

:45:08. > :45:37.APPLAUSE Is the case. -- his third base.

:45:38. > :45:51.APPLAUSE Fine serving but how on earth does

:45:52. > :45:54.he get a break? Muller's serve. Muller at the moment has dropped

:45:55. > :46:16.just two points behind his first serve and four behind his second.

:46:17. > :46:48.APPLAUSE Nowhere near sorting out this serve,

:46:49. > :46:58.54% of Muller's serves our unreturned.

:46:59. > :47:08.Not find yet to push the panic button.

:47:09. > :47:17.Well, he's hardly quaking with nerves.

:47:18. > :47:44.Muller's played with total belief, it seems. Three set points.

:47:45. > :47:52.UMPIRE: Game and first set, Muller, 6-3. Well, it was pretty academic,

:47:53. > :48:05.6-3, 33 minutes. And that was simply outstanding.

:48:06. > :48:10.Yeah, and it all got away from Rafa Nadal very, alarmingly quickly. I

:48:11. > :48:14.think that was the one question, everybody said, and I include

:48:15. > :48:19.myself, in the first three rounds, he looked so good but he had been

:48:20. > :48:22.playing against players that given their rhythm, not grass court

:48:23. > :48:25.players, where you would say they were very comfortable. I must say,

:48:26. > :48:28.I'm not surprised to see you go off the court at the end of the first

:48:29. > :48:35.set. That is not what he was expecting. -- to see him go off. You

:48:36. > :48:44.can see the unreturned serves from Muller, 15. And 13 winners to Rafa's

:48:45. > :48:51.seven. His serving stats look fantastic. What was extraordinary

:48:52. > :48:59.was he was able to break. Yeah, and I think Nadal's uncertainty and

:49:00. > :49:03.feeling of anger in this match will be absolutely, in terms of how

:49:04. > :49:09.little impact he has made on the Muller service games, it is not that

:49:10. > :49:13.Muller has got an unbelievably high first serve percentage but Nadal has

:49:14. > :49:17.only managed to win two points in total in the whole of the first set

:49:18. > :49:21.behind the first serve so he has got a big puzzle to solve common here,

:49:22. > :49:25.very big puzzle, and Muller is the type of player that Nadal has lost

:49:26. > :49:28.to here before, people like Dustin Brown, Nick Kyrgios, Lukas Rosol, a

:49:29. > :49:32.big serve and something a bit different and on top of that, he's a

:49:33. > :49:38.left-hander which makes it all the more difficult. And of course, with

:49:39. > :49:39.his reach, he denies Rafa the serve from the left caught out wide which

:49:40. > :49:52.he has been doing more and more. Never got beyond the third round,

:49:53. > :49:58.here. But it has been a simply wonderful year for him. His first

:49:59. > :50:06.two titles. A career-best ranking. At the age of 34. We have heard that

:50:07. > :50:11.kind of story so many times. We have and I do think in the big picture of

:50:12. > :50:17.our sport, I think it is great that we have contrasting surfaces wearer

:50:18. > :50:21.player like Muller, who is obviously better suited to a fast court, can

:50:22. > :50:25.challenge the top players in the world because that is ranking,

:50:26. > :50:29.coming in, seeded 16 here, he should be able to challenge the top players

:50:30. > :50:33.in the world. If every match was on a clay court or that player's best

:50:34. > :50:36.surface and every surface was a similar speed, it would be far too

:50:37. > :50:42.predictable and we know Rafa would be able to kill every single player.

:50:43. > :50:50.But here is a tournament, which he has won twice, Nadal, and as we have

:50:51. > :50:53.said, he has been playing some of the best tennis, the best grass

:50:54. > :51:01.court tennis, it seems, of his career. And yet... He was not close,

:51:02. > :51:06.there. Absolutely fascinating. APPLAUSE

:51:07. > :51:15.What can he conjure up, the great man?

:51:16. > :51:21.That is the first set he has lost. Since right the way through Roland

:51:22. > :51:30.Garros and right the way through here. UMPIRE: Time.

:51:31. > :51:40.Well, he has called time but Nadal is not exactly in a hurry. UMPIRE:

:51:41. > :51:41.Second set, Nadal deserve. Can you see the labels? Absolutely towards

:51:42. > :51:54.the court. So it will be Nadal to start the

:51:55. > :52:28.second set. Nothing wrong with the way he is

:52:29. > :52:29.serving, it is just Muller has picked it so well and return so

:52:30. > :53:02.well. And of course, the way Muller has

:53:03. > :53:05.been serving, he may only have to string one good return game

:53:06. > :53:27.together. It's not like he has to do it every single game.

:53:28. > :53:35.APPLAUSE The timing went, there. Not sure if

:53:36. > :53:50.it was a dodgy bounce. It did not seem to be.

:53:51. > :54:01.APPLAUSE Give him a bit of a boost. A quick

:54:02. > :54:10.look around and a pledge of the fist up to uncle Tony and Francisco.

:54:11. > :54:31.Fascinating to see if he brings any extra dynamic.

:54:32. > :54:35.Almost sympathetic applause for Rafa as he races down to the baseline,

:54:36. > :55:18.here. APPLAUSE

:55:19. > :55:23.The key thing for Muller is that he doesn't get vertigo as to where he

:55:24. > :55:36.is right now and what he has done in the first set.

:55:37. > :55:44.Doesn't look as if it's happening at the moment. That is an unbelievable

:55:45. > :55:48.serve, that ball swinging, I mean, to the left shoulder of the

:55:49. > :55:59.centreline umpire. No way Nadal can get to that.

:56:00. > :56:05.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE He read it but he couldn't do

:56:06. > :57:07.anything about it. APPLAUSE

:57:08. > :57:12.Well, it looked a bit dicey for a moment, there but once again, the

:57:13. > :57:16.big serve came out. I think we saw in that game the difficulty of

:57:17. > :57:20.playing such an offensive player. If Nadal is going to win this match, it

:57:21. > :57:25.is not going to be a question of him hitting ground stroke winners with

:57:26. > :57:29.Muller stood on the baseline. He's going to have to hit passing shot

:57:30. > :57:30.winners on the first and second ball of the rally. Straightaway, he will

:57:31. > :57:49.be asked the question. He lost the point but again, you can

:57:50. > :57:50.see from that low shot how well he picked the serve and how well he

:57:51. > :58:09.reacted to it. Well done. Some slice that was from

:58:10. > :59:10.Nadal. APPLAUSE

:59:11. > :59:12.Muller, rooted to the spot, there. A little hop and a skip from Nadal and

:59:13. > :59:24.he is 2-1 up. Yes, confidence sometimes is a

:59:25. > :59:31.difficult and a long journey to find and yet, it can disappear very

:59:32. > :59:36.quickly. At the end of last year, at the point where he withdrew from the

:59:37. > :59:39.World Tour Finals and took a long break, do you think, like what you

:59:40. > :59:42.said at the start of this match, if he wins this tournament, he's back

:59:43. > :59:45.to world number one, is just an indication of how many matches he

:59:46. > :59:49.has won in such a short period of time. I think for him, because he

:59:50. > :59:53.has been so dominant on the clay court for so many years, to go and

:59:54. > :59:56.effectively do that again this year, I think would have answered a lot of

:59:57. > :00:00.questions in his head. You can see straightaway when he arrived at

:00:01. > :00:04.Wimbledon, chose not to play a grass court warm up event, did not feel he

:00:05. > :00:12.had to. He could just rest and recharge the batteries and the

:00:13. > :00:16.confidence is absolutely there. Yes, 42 wins, title wins, in Monte Carlo,

:00:17. > :00:18.Barcelona for the tenth time, Madrid and then Roland Garros for the tenth

:00:19. > :00:51.time. Dad and girlfriend, looking a little

:00:52. > :01:59.anxious. So confident. Anyone watching who

:02:00. > :02:04.thinks that was a very straightforward volley, Gilles

:02:05. > :02:21.Muller made that look very, very easy.

:02:22. > :02:27.SIMON REED: Remember, this is a guy who has lost his last 22 matches

:02:28. > :02:59.against top five players. SIMON REED: He's looking around for

:03:00. > :03:04.confirmation from his people. Maybe someone shouted out to him. He's not

:03:05. > :03:37.right. Now, then... So good. That serve out wide is so

:03:38. > :03:42.affect if, even to a lefty. JAMIE BAKER: It looks to me like

:03:43. > :03:48.Nadal is having real problems reading that serve. It's not like

:03:49. > :03:49.every single serve is on the line, is the variety that he brings as

:03:50. > :05:27.well as the accuracy. A little "vamos" from Rafa on the

:05:28. > :05:47.mistake of Muller - you don't often hear that.

:05:48. > :06:07.No. Super second shot from Nadal, but still ends up losing the point.

:06:08. > :06:18.All it took in the first set was one bad service game.

:06:19. > :06:33.That ball took off after it landed. Yes, and every single warrant that

:06:34. > :06:37.the Dow is winning at the moment is followed up by some form of positive

:06:38. > :06:43.energy release, and I think this is exactly the type of match when you

:06:44. > :06:57.expect to see all of his competitive brilliance coming out.

:06:58. > :07:08.With serve so far in the second set. Jamie, do you think there has been a

:07:09. > :07:14.better competitor than Rafa Nadal? I think in terms of these situations,

:07:15. > :07:20.probably not. He's somebody who is able to shrug off disappointment,

:07:21. > :07:24.both in the big picture but also within the match. His desire to just

:07:25. > :07:30.compete for the very next point, no matter what has happened... I mean,

:07:31. > :07:32.a few years ago, in the final here, against Roger Federer, when

:07:33. > :07:37.everybody was saying he was struggling on grass, the iconic

:07:38. > :07:40.moment, when he lost the first set heavily, the first point of the

:07:41. > :07:47.second set the big "vamos" straightaway. Observing him in this

:07:48. > :07:51.match today, think about it from his point of view, how dominant he is on

:07:52. > :07:55.the clay, and everything about him when he prepares for a clay-court

:07:56. > :07:59.match is, if I take care of things on my side of the court, I'm going

:08:00. > :08:03.to win the match. Now, put yourself in his frame of mind on a grass

:08:04. > :08:08.court, it's the opposite, where sometimes, actually, it's not within

:08:09. > :08:15.his control. So, to compete the way he does, with that contrast, is

:08:16. > :08:21.outstanding. As you say, he has been picked off by similar players

:08:22. > :08:37.2-miler in the past here. -- to Muller in the past here.

:08:38. > :08:42.Might be worth a challenge. It was swinging, but did you get a little

:08:43. > :09:41.bit of the line on the way? It did. I wonder if he saw Rafa out of the

:09:42. > :10:17.corner of his eye, moving to the forehand side.

:10:18. > :10:26.Fabulous return. That might put a bit of a dent in his confidence. Big

:10:27. > :11:26.reaction from Nadal after this one - best return in the match so far.

:11:27. > :11:32.He's served nine aces and dropped just four points when that first

:11:33. > :12:42.serve has gone in in the match so far. A bit of a headache for Nadal.

:12:43. > :13:02.The Nadal supporters are getting louder and louder now.

:13:03. > :13:18.Gilles Muller taking some of his own medicine there.

:13:19. > :13:47.Super-slim picking his game up - the problem is now, how does he break

:13:48. > :13:53.the Muller serve? Being ahead on the scoreboard might make a difference

:13:54. > :13:59.in this set, because Gilles Muller has not really blinked on his

:14:00. > :14:03.service game yet. Nadal is turning the volume up every single time he

:14:04. > :14:10.wins a point. Almost like that's his biggest hope at the moment, for

:14:11. > :14:17.Muller to start thinking, hang on, I'm playing against Rafa Nadal at

:14:18. > :14:22.Wimbledon on Court No. 1! A lot of people say that when you get older,

:14:23. > :14:26.that's when the nerves hit you, but at the age of 34, it doesn't seem to

:14:27. > :14:28.be affecting Muller. There may come a time later in the match when it

:14:29. > :15:37.will, but not yet, that's for sure. What a rally! One of the rallies of

:15:38. > :15:46.the tournament. What a get that was from Muller! One millimetre,

:15:47. > :16:24.apparently! He doesn't deserve that, Muller. Sensational!

:16:25. > :16:37.So, how will he react to this? His second double.

:16:38. > :16:41.Remember, Rafa has had one break point - in the fifth game of the

:16:42. > :17:21.first set. Nothing since. That won't sit easily with him. And

:17:22. > :17:25.I do think that is a tell-tale sign that he is just not reading the

:17:26. > :17:27.Muller serve at all. There was no commitment to that at all - very

:17:28. > :17:46.reactive. Well, it was perfectly set up for

:17:47. > :17:52.him. It was a challenging ground stroke from Nadal, and it leads to

:17:53. > :18:19.two break points. It has worked a dream for him, that

:18:20. > :18:36.serve. He's into double figures on aces now. He needs another.

:18:37. > :18:51.Beautifully controlled into the corner. Another big first serve on

:18:52. > :18:53.the big point. Nadal was there that time, just wasn't able to get enough

:18:54. > :19:37.length on that return. The frown on his face, Nadal, he's

:19:38. > :19:56.missed a couple of big shots, that perhaps the worst.

:19:57. > :20:01.Well, Muller again serving really well to get out of trouble, but

:20:02. > :20:12.Nadal did have his chance and he couldn't take it.

:20:13. > :20:21.JAMIE MURRAY: These games can be such a momentum shift in goal, the

:20:22. > :20:24.question is, will Nadal see that as a positive, for having his first

:20:25. > :20:27.chance? Or will Muller taken courage meant from having saved two break

:20:28. > :20:45.points? This is not how it has been in the

:20:46. > :22:00.first week. He's got so many looks on the Nadal

:22:01. > :22:04.serve, the Dow has got very few on his. It's the shape of that return

:22:05. > :22:05.that's causing all the damage, very flat, skidding through the grass

:22:06. > :22:56.court. Another super point. Lightning

:22:57. > :23:03.quick, Nadal, around the court there. Muller is making Nadal play

:23:04. > :23:05.so many uncomfortable shots, and that low forehand was tremendous

:23:06. > :23:25.leap dealt with by Nadal. And when you're playing this well,

:23:26. > :23:29.you get the look as well. Break point. And, of course, if he gets

:23:30. > :23:50.it, he will serve for a two-set lead.

:23:51. > :24:02.I don't believe that! Nadal, with his head down, but Muller played so

:24:03. > :24:21.well then. Boy, oh, boy. This was not in any

:24:22. > :24:26.game plan. And really, Rafa hasn't played badly, there have been some

:24:27. > :24:30.poor shots along the way, but Muller has been outstanding. He has, he has

:24:31. > :24:36.executed his game plan absolutely perfectly. His serve has probably

:24:37. > :24:40.caused Nadal more trouble than he had imagined. The reason for the

:24:41. > :24:41.applause, just on the screen, we've seen Andy Murray's result coming

:24:42. > :24:57.through. The word I'm thinking about is

:24:58. > :24:59.rhythm. Everything Muller has done has prevented Rafa Nadal getting

:25:00. > :25:05.into his normal match rhythm, and that's why we see like on that last

:25:06. > :25:12.point, the shot selection was not correct, didn't have any pace. So,

:25:13. > :25:15.we've been doing just 70 minutes, and here's Muller, serving for a

:25:16. > :25:50.two-set lead against the double champion here at Wimbledon.

:25:51. > :25:54.Yes, that it bounce up a little higher, but normally, he would pick

:25:55. > :26:57.that off without any problem. Worth a challenge?

:26:58. > :27:05.UMPIRE: Mr Muller is challenging the call, the ball was called out. It

:27:06. > :27:29.seemed close. Mr Muller has no challenges remaining.

:27:30. > :27:35.Well, it's been as good as that for most of the match. Two set points

:27:36. > :28:07.for a two-set lead. Was that tightness or just a

:28:08. > :28:57.one-off? Such a good shot from Muller! He's

:28:58. > :29:06.challenging, and he's moving towards the chair, is Nadal. He knows that

:29:07. > :29:15.Muller's shot landed. Here's confirmation. And would you believe

:29:16. > :29:24.it, Rafa Nadal is two sets down to Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. And you

:29:25. > :29:31.can hear the muttering in the crowd, no-one came here expecting this. Why

:29:32. > :29:37.would they? But they know that Muller has played really well this

:29:38. > :29:45.year, he is at a career high of 26, he's won ten matches on grass. But

:29:46. > :29:51.really - he's been the boss! He has, it's been an incredible performance

:29:52. > :29:54.so far. All thought, OK, on a grass court, he could cause Nadal some

:29:55. > :29:59.problems, but it's been the combination. We didn't quite expect

:30:00. > :30:05.his game to make Nadal look so out of sorts. Actually, in the last two

:30:06. > :30:09.or three games, we have seen him miss a few routine balls, which will

:30:10. > :30:13.go down as unforced errors, but can't call them unforced errors,

:30:14. > :30:18.because he's feeling so uncomfortable with what Muller has

:30:19. > :30:22.brought to the party, and that's the result. Looking at the stats, it

:30:23. > :30:28.says four unforced errors in total for Nadal in this match, and yet

:30:29. > :30:30.he's two sets down, because so many of the errors have been forced by

:30:31. > :30:44.this guy. One more set will do it. He has

:30:45. > :30:49.beaten Nadal here before, in 2005, 12 years ago, when Rafa was just 19

:30:50. > :30:55.years of age, just beginning to know all about it. -- and we were just

:30:56. > :31:03.beginning to know all about him. And now we do. For everyone who has seen

:31:04. > :31:07.him this year, they are saying he has played as well as he ever has in

:31:08. > :31:11.his life. I do think the other thing worth mentioning, the question at

:31:12. > :31:17.the start of this match would have been, we know Muller will play

:31:18. > :31:22.fantastic tennis, but does he have the fitness to do it over five sets?

:31:23. > :31:26.The first two said to have taken one hour and 15 minutes, so I'm not sure

:31:27. > :31:34.that's a factor any more. -- the first two sets. Here we go, then.

:31:35. > :31:38.Can he come back? Three times in his career he has come back from two

:31:39. > :32:25.sets to love down and gone through. SUE BARKER: We predicted this would

:32:26. > :32:30.be a tricky opponent for Rafa, and it is proving to be. We're leaving

:32:31. > :32:34.that match here on BBC Two, but it continues now on BBC One, so if you

:32:35. > :32:43.want to continue watching it, switch over now to BBC One. Here, we will

:32:44. > :32:47.head off to Centre Court to see Roger Federer against Grigor

:32:48. > :32:52.Dimitrov. Just a short time ago, Andy Murray completed a straight

:32:53. > :32:56.sets victory against Benoit Paire, a tricky opponent. He wasn't at his

:32:57. > :33:00.very best but he got the job done and won the last point. He is

:33:01. > :33:04.through to the quarterfinals here at Wimbledon once again. Andy Murray,

:33:05. > :33:13.through on Centre Court. After the match, he spoke to Lynne McKenzie.

:33:14. > :33:22.Congratulations, Andy. Benoit Paire, a pretty difficult game to read.

:33:23. > :33:26.Yes, I thought I did pretty well today. Perhaps a couple of sloppy

:33:27. > :33:30.service games, but that was by far the best I have hit the ball so far

:33:31. > :33:36.in the tournament, so really pleased with that. He is not an easy guide

:33:37. > :33:41.to play. He has one of the best backhands and can play every shot,

:33:42. > :33:46.so it is not always easy to say where you should be playing the

:33:47. > :33:51.ball. A challenge was overruled in the third set, but it looked like it

:33:52. > :33:58.didn't upset you too much. You had a little joke about it. How

:33:59. > :34:04.frustrating is that when it happens? Well... It's not that frustrating.

:34:05. > :34:08.It is one point. We probably played about 300 out there, and it was the

:34:09. > :34:14.first point of the game. Obviously, you want to try and win every point.

:34:15. > :34:19.That is the mindset, but it is only just one point, and it wasn't an

:34:20. > :34:25.important one. Maybe if it happened at 5-5 in a tie-break, it would be

:34:26. > :34:30.different. It was fine. It's still worth having the discussion when you

:34:31. > :34:36.are changing ends to clarify? Yeah, I guess so. That happens all the

:34:37. > :34:39.time. Pretty much in every match, there are discussions between

:34:40. > :34:44.umpires and players. Sometimes it is good just to get it off your chest,

:34:45. > :34:49.and get an understanding of what the umpire once in those situations as

:34:50. > :34:53.well. In the build-up to Wimbledon, the uncertainty of the injury, if

:34:54. > :34:57.someone had said you would be through to the quarterfinals with a

:34:58. > :35:04.level you are playing at, would you have taken that? Sure. Two weeks ago

:35:05. > :35:08.I was resting. I was also a little bit concerned. When you are having

:35:09. > :35:12.issues a few days before a big event, it's frustrating, but I

:35:13. > :35:18.managed it well. I think I've played some good stuff. Today, like I said,

:35:19. > :35:22.was the best I have played so far in the tournament. Yeah, I'm doing

:35:23. > :35:28.well, so hopefully keep it up. Congratulations. Cheers. He is

:35:29. > :35:34.safely through and he will face Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals on

:35:35. > :35:40.Wednesday. Anderson saved four match points in the fourth set, but Sam

:35:41. > :35:45.Querrey finally got the job done in the fifth set, 6-3. The battle of

:35:46. > :35:48.the big servers ends with Sam Querrey, former Queen's champion,

:35:49. > :35:58.going through in five sets to face Andy Murray on Wednesday. SUE

:35:59. > :36:13.BARKER: The match between Milos Raonic and

:36:14. > :36:18.is on the red button. Tomas Berdych has a break of serve in the third

:36:19. > :36:23.set against Dominic Thiem. That one is also on the red button and on the

:36:24. > :36:29.website. But we are heading to Centre Court. We have Rafael Nadal

:36:30. > :36:34.on BBC One, but on BBC Two, you may have heard a roar and a short time

:36:35. > :36:41.ago, because this man is walking onto court - Grigor Dimitrov

:36:42. > :36:50.followed by Roger Federer, and the crowd always likes to welcome him

:36:51. > :36:53.back to his favourite court. CHEERING

:36:54. > :37:09.AND APPLAUSE Rafa is on BBC One, Roger on BBC

:37:10. > :37:14.Two. It is a busy day, isn't it? Take

:37:15. > :37:21.your breath. It is happening everywhere here. How did you feel

:37:22. > :37:30.Murray played? I thought the most important thing was that he moved

:37:31. > :37:37.great. He is perhaps B plus heading towards capital a minus. I

:37:38. > :37:45.congratulate our lone American, Sam Querrey, because he has backed up

:37:46. > :37:48.his great result of last year. After having those match points in the

:37:49. > :37:53.fourth, a lesser man would have gone away and lost the plot a little bit,

:37:54. > :38:00.so that was a strong effort. It certainly was. Rafa, two sets down.

:38:01. > :38:05.We were talking the start of the programme about what a tough

:38:06. > :38:13.opponent Muller is. He comes to Dennett. That is really the point.

:38:14. > :38:19.He has got a great serve. And he has a great volley. It seems to be the

:38:20. > :38:25.year where you have got to be over 30 to have success. We have Rafa on

:38:26. > :38:30.Court Number One, Roger here, and this match will be beautiful to

:38:31. > :38:34.watch, won't it? No question about it. You are watching the most

:38:35. > :38:39.beautiful player who has ever stepped on a court. What about us,

:38:40. > :38:47.John? We were OK, but not at this level. And Grigor Dimitrov is trying

:38:48. > :38:51.to copy his game. He has done a pretty good imitation. It is

:38:52. > :38:56.definitely a poor man's Federer, but I have to say that I am hopeful he

:38:57. > :39:00.steps up, emotionally, mentally and in terms of the ability he can bring

:39:01. > :39:04.to the table, like he did against Nadal in the semis in Australia. I

:39:05. > :39:11.saw him in a semi-here. He played great against Novak. He played great

:39:12. > :39:20.against Nadal. He hasn't won either of those, so here is the

:39:21. > :39:25.opportunity, Mr Dimitrov, to do it. He has only lost 18 games. Has he

:39:26. > :39:33.played someone of this guy's level yet? No, but he is in good form. He

:39:34. > :39:38.had a stretch on the clay-court season when he wasn't doing well. He

:39:39. > :39:42.started the year well. He had the semifinal of the Queen's Club. He

:39:43. > :39:52.can show what he is made of right here tonight. Let's took at the

:39:53. > :39:55.career of Grigor Dimitrov. Confidence is one of the most

:39:56. > :40:01.important things right now. I am feeling great, my body is on a good

:40:02. > :40:05.schedule. I think I am finding a good balance. Nine years ago, Grigor

:40:06. > :40:11.Dimitrov found the perfect balance to win the boys' singles title at

:40:12. > :40:19.Wimbledon. He describes it as one of his greatest memories. It is special

:40:20. > :40:23.and I cherish it a lot. You never know how many times you will be able

:40:24. > :40:28.to do that, so you take it as it is, you try to make the most out of it.

:40:29. > :40:35.A quarterfinal win over Andy Murray in 2014 was further evidence that he

:40:36. > :40:38.seemed destined for great things. It was a spectacular moment for me, and

:40:39. > :40:43.I am looking forward to getting out there and playing on that the court

:40:44. > :40:49.again. It's special. I've played on those courts a few times, and I have

:40:50. > :40:53.a feeling I know how to get to Centre Court now, which is great,

:40:54. > :40:57.not like the first time. It is all exciting and positive things. Since

:40:58. > :41:02.that semifinal appearance three years ago, he has struggled for

:41:03. > :41:07.consistency. He believes he is in a good place. I feel I am in a better

:41:08. > :41:13.place in my life, I am a better player, physically and mentally. I

:41:14. > :41:17.am a completely different player. . Baby Federer from an early age, he

:41:18. > :41:29.faces the daddy himself. I am looking forward to playing my game

:41:30. > :41:38.and playing on my terms. What does he have today... To do today, Boris?

:41:39. > :41:43.They are so similar in looks and in technique, I think it is about

:41:44. > :41:50.personality, to really show your position, and not only to play nice

:41:51. > :41:54.tennis but to win. They have called time, so we had better go. There

:41:55. > :42:00.will be some beautiful backhand is out on court. Thanks to Boris and to

:42:01. > :42:05.John McEnroe. Rafael Nadal, two sets to love down, over on BBC One. John

:42:06. > :42:11.McEnroe is about to join Andrew Cotter in the commentary box.

:42:12. > :42:21.COMMENTATOR: It is a match for those who love the beauty of tennis. And

:42:22. > :42:49.we are about to have a contest that will equal the aesthetics.

:42:50. > :43:20.APPLAUSE A sprightly start from Dimitrov.

:43:21. > :44:20.A helping hand for Federer's first point.

:44:21. > :44:28.To me, Dimitrov has a tendency to toss the ball a little to his left,

:44:29. > :44:34.which gives in that slice out why. He loves to pump up to speed up the

:44:35. > :45:07.middle. He will often go out quite here. -- go out wide.

:45:08. > :45:16.He seems to have settled in nicely, Dimitrov, but already, under a

:45:17. > :45:18.little bit of pressure. You don't want to plant your feet, as he did

:45:19. > :45:38.there. UMPIRE: Mr Federer is challenging

:45:39. > :45:46.the call. The ball was called in. One part of his game when he's not

:45:47. > :45:55.the very best is sometimes his challenges. Let's see if he is

:45:56. > :46:03.right... No. He would prefer Dimitrov to hit a second serve.

:46:04. > :47:19.Guess what... Gets a double. In the very first game,...

:47:20. > :47:29.A good hold in the end for Dimitrov, and a good response to the pressure

:47:30. > :47:34.from Federer. Psychologically, and you and Boris spoke about it before

:47:35. > :47:37.the match, their games are so similar, but the psychology - they

:47:38. > :47:41.have played five times and Federer has won them all. That is that they

:47:42. > :47:48.covered all he has to overcome. One of them. You need to make better

:47:49. > :47:52.decisions, better discipline under pressure. In the past, he has gone

:47:53. > :48:13.for a lower percentage shots too often. That is the key thing.

:48:14. > :48:26.APPLAUSE Dimitrov has an incredible ability

:48:27. > :48:32.to slide, which, to me, he over does at times, and it puts him

:48:33. > :48:41.off-balance too often. That gets exposed by the top players. You

:48:42. > :48:45.don't see them reaching and getting out of position.

:48:46. > :49:32.What a return from Dimitrov - full stretch, fired back across Federer.

:49:33. > :49:41.Well, Federer holds with a good deal more comfort than Dimitrov. A full

:49:42. > :50:14.crew in attendance, as usual, for Federer.

:50:15. > :50:22.I'm not sure who has improved more, which is a fairly miraculous thing

:50:23. > :50:33.to say, considering Roger will turn 36 next month. Grigor seems to have

:50:34. > :50:39.gotten his game back on track. I keep waiting for him to make that

:50:40. > :50:46.breakthrough, and it's a tall order. The top four guys... We thought it

:50:47. > :50:48.was happening in 2014, that he would kick on from there. He seems to

:50:49. > :51:47.coming back now. Sir Ben Ainslie. A lot of former

:51:48. > :51:52.sports men and women on Centre Court today. Fresh back from the America's

:51:53. > :52:07.Cup. Both these men have stunning

:52:08. > :52:15.backhands, but Federer's is such a great weapon. Ever since he got that

:52:16. > :52:16.racket with a bigger sweet spot, he has said that with more authority

:52:17. > :52:55.and belief. A loose one from Federer finally

:52:56. > :53:03.sees out the game for Dimitrov, and we remain on serve. Danny Valverde

:53:04. > :53:08.watching, coaching Dimitrov. He held off on going to the bigger racket

:53:09. > :53:13.for a long time. 2013 Federer eventually went to that. Explain the

:53:14. > :53:18.difference and why he was reluctant. The reluctance was how much he won,

:53:19. > :53:24.how great he is, and how much he had accomplished with the 90 square

:53:25. > :53:28.inches frame. I don't know if it was stubbornness. Whatever combination

:53:29. > :53:32.of things it is that forced him to slice it more and not step in, where

:53:33. > :53:42.people kept encouraging him, coaches. His latest coach had a

:53:43. > :53:48.tremendous backhand, and it seems to have finally occurred to Roger,

:53:49. > :53:51.along with this bigger frame, more room to operate, easier to come

:53:52. > :53:58.over. Let's not forget, the court was playing faster than in all the

:53:59. > :54:02.years I have played or covered it, so that helped. And that has led to

:54:03. > :54:07.something that is one of the great accomplishments that I have ever

:54:08. > :54:11.seen, because I was coaching Milos Raonic and he lost. He didn't play a

:54:12. > :54:18.tournament for six months because of an injury, and the first tournament

:54:19. > :54:22.back, he won against Nadal. Come on, amazing. A little bit special

:54:23. > :54:38.serving. All those who disappeared after the

:54:39. > :54:40.Murray - Paire match coming back into Centre Court, being a little

:54:41. > :54:59.noisy. Grigor Dimitrov does have a tendency

:55:00. > :55:04.to try to overheat, go for too much. He has to play within himself. I

:55:05. > :55:18.know he is excited. There is no question, playing this great man.

:55:19. > :55:35.A phenomenal mover, still. All those years of competition, the surgery he

:55:36. > :56:11.had last year with the knee. He is like the bionic man.

:56:12. > :56:23.It's Federer holds. Of all the talent we talk about, we have

:56:24. > :56:26.mentioned before that perhaps the greatest one of Roger Federer's is

:56:27. > :56:30.that his body has given him so many years. He has had a couple of things

:56:31. > :56:34.with his knee and his back, but by and large, he is pretty unscathed,

:56:35. > :56:38.perhaps because of how well he moves. No question, that is a big

:56:39. > :56:51.part of it. He does not count it at all. -- he does not pound it.

:56:52. > :57:48.Beautiful. He has gotten better at that in the last year or two.

:57:49. > :57:54.Dimitrov knows he's up against most of the crowd in here today as well,

:57:55. > :58:00.although he is a very popular player. Most of his box is on his

:58:01. > :58:23.side, I believe! Hand open, a good decision by Grigor

:58:24. > :58:29.there, to go to the ball early, not to go too big. I do your time --

:58:30. > :58:48.bide your time. Dimitrov started well. A little

:58:49. > :59:02.shake in his first service game, but he looks pretty comfortable.

:59:03. > :59:10.Grigor has worked very hard on his fitness. That was a big issue for

:59:11. > :59:14.him, particularly early on, and he has done an excellent job of trying

:59:15. > :59:17.to match the extraordinary levels of fitness that he sees from the top

:59:18. > :59:25.players. If he ever is going to get over the hump, he knew that he had

:59:26. > :59:28.to work exceptionally hard to work to the point where he could go the

:59:29. > :59:32.distance, which he did, which is why that defeat to Nadal, the best match

:59:33. > :59:37.he ever play, was so debilitating, even though he went there next week

:59:38. > :59:42.and played in his home country, in a small event that he won, the rest of

:59:43. > :59:47.the year, for the most part, has been pretty poor, considering what

:59:48. > :59:53.he showed in Australia. He was working with Roger Rashid, a

:59:54. > :59:59.tremendously fit coach himself. He was working for a while with a

:00:00. > :00:11.physio trainer who had been with Warren Roger Federer for a while.

:00:12. > :00:17.You look at Dimitrov, and you see how fit he looks. One of the best

:00:18. > :00:18.matches of the last five years was that match with an adult. It was

:00:19. > :00:53.incredible. -- with Nadal. Dimitrov giving a look and deciding

:00:54. > :00:54.not to challenge. You can see that the court has been taking some

:00:55. > :01:20.punishment in this Championships. Over the years, his return of serve

:01:21. > :01:29.has been Dimitrov's weakness. He's not at the level necessary to win

:01:30. > :01:37.slams, also it appears. Still just a single point for Dimitrov Federer.

:01:38. > :01:41.-- against Federer. Another part of his game, presumably, that I've

:01:42. > :01:47.heard he's worked on, and he has improved, but it's still a work in

:01:48. > :01:48.progress. Too often he tries to go for too much, when it's not there

:01:49. > :02:16.for him. If that ball looks behind the person

:02:17. > :02:20.you're playing, look to go and cover the line, because it can be hard to

:02:21. > :02:28.pull it back crosscourt from that position, if you're Federer.

:02:29. > :02:36.Struggling a bit, with the cold, little out of sorts. He needs a

:02:37. > :02:46.bigger racket! I doubt that! Started slow in his last match,

:02:47. > :03:05.eventually got going. Not in full flow, that. This is his

:03:06. > :03:08.opportunity to get his act together, get something going. Particularly

:03:09. > :03:39.with the head-to-head. Long time with Andy Murray, Daniel

:03:40. > :03:49.Verdu, and a spell with Tomas Berdych. -- Daniel Vallverdu.

:03:50. > :04:03.APPLAUSE UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:04:04. > :04:07.. Dimitrov keeps his nose in front. While he can do that, even Roger

:04:08. > :04:16.Federer will feel a bit of pleasure, latter stages of the set. -- the

:04:17. > :04:21.latter stages. It is astonishing, we've run out of superlatives, to be

:04:22. > :04:30.doing what he's doing at 28 is outstanding, but to be doing it in

:04:31. > :04:34.his 30s, no signs of wilting at all. Not at all. The guy's love for the

:04:35. > :04:41.game is so phenomenal and such a great asset. We all love to play,

:04:42. > :04:44.but losing the top people emotionally. You almost hate losing

:04:45. > :04:49.more than you love winning, most people -- losing beats up people. Or

:04:50. > :04:56.John loves all of it, and he has, I would say a unique ability -- Roger

:04:57. > :05:02.loves all of it. He has a unique ability to shrug it off. Nadal is

:05:03. > :05:08.battling to - one. But he looks like he's tearing him up a little bit. He

:05:09. > :05:14.competes better than anyone, but this guy loves the press conferences

:05:15. > :05:23.and the travel, he loves everything. They enjoy their time together.

:05:24. > :05:31.New balls for Roger Federer. And he did the sensible thing of shutting

:05:32. > :05:37.things down for the clay-court season. No need to win another

:05:38. > :05:38.French Open, a tall order for his game. The stress. Why bother doing

:05:39. > :05:50.that? Those other type of balls, he's got

:05:51. > :05:58.to make Federer hit some tough ones, make him earn it. Stay disciplined.

:05:59. > :06:02.He is a human being, I believe Roger is a human being, you know, I think

:06:03. > :06:08.you bleeds like all of us, has emotion.

:06:09. > :06:15.Focus each and every ball. You're going to be there every second of

:06:16. > :06:27.this match if your Dimitrov. Easier said than done when this

:06:28. > :07:06.guy's coming at you, sovereignty. -- smothering you.

:07:07. > :07:15.APPLAUSE Well, the merest hint of a chance to

:07:16. > :07:21.Dimitrov on the Federer serve is snuffed out. Just a hint of

:07:22. > :07:29.perspiration on the brow of Roger Federer. Great conditions. The heat

:07:30. > :07:46.was stifling for most of the first week. But now is the perfect time to

:07:47. > :07:53.play, at 5pm -ish. A unique day, the second Monday. A great day.

:07:54. > :08:05.You get to see Djokovic, he is on later.

:08:06. > :08:08.Swinging a little bit, the sun is pretty bright out there at the

:08:09. > :08:37.moment. Used to catching balls here. And immediate challenge from

:08:38. > :08:51.Federer. With that shot overhead, he said,

:08:52. > :08:51.I'll take my chances with the challenge. Another good challenge

:08:52. > :09:30.from Federer. Oh, it's good, this time. Just from

:09:31. > :09:35.Dimitrov. It is a good fight from Grigor there. He was under some

:09:36. > :09:40.serious pressure. That's the ball you don't want to miss. Perhaps the

:09:41. > :10:09.easiest one there is. You've got to be able to handle it. Well played.

:10:10. > :10:17.Yes, they play similar, but to me, Federer has more firepower. He hits

:10:18. > :10:30.the ball harder. He -- the pressure is on Dimitrov.

:10:31. > :10:38.APPLAUSE You don't hear that too often from

:10:39. > :10:46.Federer, getting animated. This is his chance. Well, that's a really

:10:47. > :10:51.poor shot. It will cost him big time.

:10:52. > :11:11.This time it's Dimitrov, looking to his coaches.

:11:12. > :11:21.He likes that serve out wide. It is the preferred way for him. Roger has

:11:22. > :11:42.to be alert to it. -- the preferred play.

:11:43. > :13:04.Good coaching. What does that mean? Is it signalling him?

:13:05. > :13:12.UMPIRE: Mr Dimitrov is challenging a call. The ball was called out. Mike

:13:13. > :13:18.likely to be disbanded. Hawk-Eye will be the judge. -- to be

:13:19. > :13:19.disappointed. Well wide. UMPIRE: Mr do a job has two challenges

:13:20. > :13:57.remaining. -- Mr Dimitrov. Oh, long! Long from Dimitrov. Chance

:13:58. > :14:09.number three coming for Roger Federer.

:14:10. > :14:16.You're already serving after the modest rally of the match. -- the

:14:17. > :14:36.longest rally. That forehand, that cost him.

:14:37. > :14:43.Oh, another mistake has sat up for him as well. Dimitrov falters and

:14:44. > :15:00.Federer closes in on this first set. It seems to be not controlled,

:15:01. > :15:04.Dimitrov, because Federer has been holding with slightly more is. But

:15:05. > :15:09.Dimitrov was coping, and then very quickly and got away from him. So

:15:10. > :15:13.what with slightly more ease. Now this man is marching towards a one

:15:14. > :15:17.set lead. I was talking about the discipline necessary. The shot

:15:18. > :15:22.selection. At tense and important moments. And you have to follow

:15:23. > :15:27.through. It's not the first or second ball, but every now and then

:15:28. > :15:30.you get into one of those rallies. The 18th shot can be as meaningful

:15:31. > :15:35.as the first, and you've got to stay with it. You can't give someone this

:15:36. > :15:40.great a free point. In the end, you know, you missed to four hands in a

:15:41. > :15:45.row and then you look up and you're sitting on the chair and this guy

:15:46. > :15:50.that has won it seven times is saying, OK, thank you. Because he's

:15:51. > :15:54.testing, probing, daring him to do that, and he obliged. That's pain. I

:15:55. > :16:01.sometimes Dimitrov against Federer will chase his big shots even more.

:16:02. > :16:05.He will think, I've got to do something special to beat this guy.

:16:06. > :16:09.There's no question. It has actually been proven over time. That's

:16:10. > :16:12.another reason why they're so tough to beat. Roger Federer serving for

:16:13. > :16:31.the set. Beautifully done there. Moving

:16:32. > :16:45.forward quickly, that the mis-hit. -- that is a mis-hit.

:16:46. > :16:52.I get the feeling that Federer is moving better. In addition to

:16:53. > :17:06.hitting it harder, in addition to having been there 100 times more.

:17:07. > :17:30.APPLAUSE Closed out as he is closed out so

:17:31. > :17:41.many games before, a hold to love. And Roger Federer is in control.

:17:42. > :17:46.Analysing the big four or however many big players there might be,

:17:47. > :17:51.what sort of form they are looking in. The bowl having a bit of a tough

:17:52. > :17:56.match at the moment. We don't know how Djokovic is going to get on.

:17:57. > :18:02.Andy Murray came through OK. You can't fault Roger Federer's

:18:03. > :18:07.performances so far. It's hard to fault too many things about this

:18:08. > :18:11.guy. Especially the way he's gone about his business over the years at

:18:12. > :18:16.this tournament. He's just got an uncanny sense of knowing when the

:18:17. > :18:23.other guy's going to blink, when he's feeling pressure, when to move

:18:24. > :18:28.forward. When to sort of bite his time, all of these qualities, if you

:18:29. > :18:37.can bind them and add them all up, in addition to he's one of the top

:18:38. > :18:41.guys of all time, you can go down the list, his backhand, forehand is

:18:42. > :18:46.one of the best shots that we've ever seen in tennis. The movement,

:18:47. > :18:51.he's moving better than this guy. Why is that's somebody explain that

:18:52. > :18:57.to me. He's 35, the other guy is 26. He's just better. He's a better

:18:58. > :19:03.move, I guess that's what it boils to. What's Grigor Dimitrov's best

:19:04. > :19:10.shot? His forehand, right? How did he miss all of those? The pressure

:19:11. > :19:18.got to him. Federer's pressure. Dimitrov won the coin toss.

:19:19. > :19:52.He will serve to start this second set.

:19:53. > :20:00.He plays so quickly, Federer, too. I think the first set was 34 minutes.

:20:01. > :20:05.It just happened so fast. You never relax against this guy.

:20:06. > :20:11.Well, you think you're playing well and beating and living with him, the

:20:12. > :20:12.next time you're sitting down in the changing rooms. -- competing with

:20:13. > :21:22.him. So, a good start, a good start to

:21:23. > :21:44.the second set for Grigor Dimitrov. Talking about who the winner might

:21:45. > :21:50.play in this one, Milos Raonic or Alex Zverev. That would be

:21:51. > :22:05.interesting, Federer against Raonic in the semifinal last year.

:22:06. > :22:11.Well, you're looking at a future number one in all likelihood with

:22:12. > :22:17.Zverev, a few years down the road. And you are looking at the guy in

:22:18. > :22:24.the finals of Wimbledon. You see that Roger's draw is not simple, by

:22:25. > :22:31.any means. I'm wondering as I watch this, hoping for a competitive set

:22:32. > :22:35.so that Dimitrov can figure out a way to lift is gained. I don't even

:22:36. > :22:40.think Federer is playing his absolute best yet -- to lift his

:22:41. > :22:57.game. You better find another one or two of your own. His father.

:22:58. > :23:02.APPLAUSE So, nothing from either player in

:23:03. > :23:18.this second set. STUDIO: We have to leave this match.

:23:19. > :23:22.If you want to continue watching, you can. It will be our featured

:23:23. > :23:27.match on the red button. We will of course keep you up-to-date with it

:23:28. > :23:32.here on BBC Two. But we're going to the big story that is unfolding over

:23:33. > :23:36.on Court Number One, with Rafael Nadal, the two time champion, 2-1

:23:37. > :23:44.down to the big server from rocks Blood, Joel Moon love. He was 2-0

:23:45. > :23:47.down, but he's fighting back -- the big server from Luxembourg, Gilles

:23:48. > :23:57.Muller. Jamie Baker is alongside Simon Reed.

:23:58. > :24:04.COMMENTATOR: Nadal fighting like a lion. Muller, who played lights out

:24:05. > :24:07.tennis for one hour and a quarter, taking those first sets. The

:24:08. > :24:46.pressure being exerted. Aimed by game now. -- game by game.

:24:47. > :25:37.Great disguise! How quick was he onto it?! And then Muller totally

:25:38. > :25:41.deceived. We are starting to see more and more points like this.

:25:42. > :25:42.Nadal is finding a way to get into the Muller service game. Great touch

:25:43. > :26:58.to finish that one-off. CHEERING

:26:59. > :27:02.Enough power! Nadal with a big fist up to his band

:27:03. > :27:44.of followers. You can hear the growing of

:27:45. > :27:52.disappointment. -- the groan of disappointment.

:27:53. > :28:31.Oh, he needed to be 6-foot for them. -- 6-foot for then. What a time to

:28:32. > :28:33.come out of the second serve like that, 110 mph out wide and following

:28:34. > :29:20.it in. Just super! Nadal like a call yorked

:29:21. > :29:26.spring there. You can be denied, and yet he was. -- equal Yalda spring.

:29:27. > :29:32.-- he couldn't be denied, and yet he was.

:29:33. > :30:01.And Nadal is now one out of ten on break point opportunities.

:30:02. > :30:10.Umpire label Mr Miller is challenging the call, the ball is

:30:11. > :30:15.called out. -- UMPIRE: Mr Muller is challenging the call, the ball is

:30:16. > :30:18.called out. Here is another break point for the Spaniard. UMPIRE:

:30:19. > :30:54.Advantage Nadal. Again, Nadal standing so far back.

:30:55. > :30:59.He has got the break, and it is 3-2. Jamie, one break has been enough in

:31:00. > :31:03.each set so far, and I can't see that changing. It has, but this has

:31:04. > :31:08.turned into just such a fantastic contest between these two players,

:31:09. > :31:13.especially on the moolah service game. It is a tactical battle. Nadal

:31:14. > :31:29.has really dropped off the baseline to return the serve, and the result

:31:30. > :31:36.has been that molar Fiat -- Muller... Ned Al's positioning has

:31:37. > :31:38.had the desired effect, and the net result is that he is getting into

:31:39. > :32:00.more points, -- Nadal's positioning. Just a great contest. Playing the

:32:01. > :32:05.tennis of his life. Is it going to be enough? He has unsettled Nadal,

:32:06. > :32:50.but can he unseat him? CROWD GROANS

:32:51. > :32:52.That wasn't in the script, because he seemed to make a very quick move

:32:53. > :34:05.to it. For so long, it was Nadal not being

:34:06. > :34:23.able to read the Muller serve, and now the tables have turned.

:34:24. > :34:31.For the first couple of sets, it was Ned Al being bossed around, and

:34:32. > :34:34.that, too, has changed completely. --

:34:35. > :35:01.And now the pendulum is moving pretty quickly. UMPIRE: New balls,

:35:02. > :35:08.please. We talked about red at the start of the match. You get the

:35:09. > :35:13.feeling now, especially on the Nadal service game, it is not the normal

:35:14. > :35:16.rhythm he would expect against some of the baseline players he has

:35:17. > :35:19.played in the first couple of rounds, but he has settled into the

:35:20. > :36:20.rhythm that is comfortable for this match.

:36:21. > :36:59.So, the love service game, still Nadal 4-3.

:37:00. > :37:11.So, what is the way forward now? Will there be a chance for Muller to

:37:12. > :37:19.break? It looks as if it is receding, that chance, with each

:37:20. > :37:26.successive Nadal service game. Nadal, at the moment, terrific

:37:27. > :37:30.serving stats in this set so far. He has dropped just one point behind

:37:31. > :37:40.his first serve, and one point behind his second. It is a tough ask

:37:41. > :37:47.for Gilles Muller. He, too, is a terrific competitor. Through his

:37:48. > :37:55.career, he has had to battle with injury, a lack of success, a lack of

:37:56. > :37:58.confidence, probably. Jamie Delgado seemed to change it around two or

:37:59. > :38:03.three years ago when he got hold of him, then there was another injury,

:38:04. > :38:09.and then this year, he has just gone up another level. You mentioned

:38:10. > :38:13.confidence, and we have been talking about it in respect of Nadal, but

:38:14. > :38:19.Gilles Muller has won ten grass court matches in the tournaments he

:38:20. > :38:57.has played, so he is also very confident.

:38:58. > :39:08.Making the big man change direction. We really didn't see many of these

:39:09. > :39:12.points in the first couple of sets, Nadal just dominating with his

:39:13. > :39:39.forehand. People play as many of those as he can. -- he will play.

:39:40. > :39:50.That backhand set it up. He is hitting the backhand better now. He

:39:51. > :39:53.is, when he is seeing the short ball, he is looking and feeling more

:39:54. > :40:59.comfortable. APPLAUSE

:41:00. > :41:07.I thought the earlier shot was going long, and the dull for a split

:41:08. > :41:32.second stop. -- and Nadal for a split second...

:41:33. > :41:39.No mistake that time. And he moves to within a game of taking this to a

:41:40. > :42:44.fifth set. Oh! You had to feel Von Miller then.

:42:45. > :42:46.A really good volley, but no reward. Again, Nadal giving himself the time

:42:47. > :43:25.to get a full swing on that return. Another huge stretch. So difficult

:43:26. > :43:40.to pass. That is a great example of keeping

:43:41. > :44:26.your hands in front, allowing him to deal with that pace.

:44:27. > :44:33.Muller keeps the Spaniard honest, forces him to serve out in this

:44:34. > :44:37.fourth set. SUE BARKER: And we will be right back to see if he does do

:44:38. > :44:43.that. We will update you with what is happening on Centre Court. Just a

:44:44. > :44:52.few moments ago, Roger Federer, with a set point, serving at 5-2, taking

:44:53. > :44:59.another big serve. That set took just 27 minutes. Dad is happy, and

:45:00. > :45:03.Roger is happy. He is 2-0 up in sets, 6-4, 6-2. That was a short

:45:04. > :45:08.time ago, and they are back playing. If you want to watch that match, it

:45:09. > :45:13.is our featured match on the red button. You can follow it on the

:45:14. > :45:17.website as well. Other matches going on at the moment, on Court Number

:45:18. > :45:31.Two, Sasha is very, the 20-year-old, is 5-3 up at 1-1. He has a break of

:45:32. > :45:36.serve. -- Sasha Zverev. Tomas Berdych is edging towards victory.

:45:37. > :45:40.He is a break up in the fifth set. He was the runner-up in 2010. That

:45:41. > :45:50.match is on the red button and on the website. Back we go to see Rafa

:45:51. > :46:13.serve. COMMENTATOR: Two and a half hours we have been going.

:46:14. > :46:28.APPLAUSE He got just the return he wanted. He

:46:29. > :46:46.has still dropped just one point behind his first serve in the set.

:46:47. > :46:53.And that is a superb volley. Generally, he has missed one or two

:46:54. > :46:58.here. He is one of the best volley players in the world. Really good at

:46:59. > :47:03.picking the right time to come in and finish. When you think of the

:47:04. > :47:04.work he has put into that area of his game throughout his career, just

:47:05. > :47:21.fantastic. Oh!

:47:22. > :47:44.APPLAUSE Magical Nadal. Three set points.

:47:45. > :48:10.Is it going to be possible to deny him right now? Mother is going off,

:48:11. > :48:22.just like Nadal went off after the opening set. -- Muller is going. He

:48:23. > :48:26.played some fantastic tennis towards the end of that set. It is

:48:27. > :48:31.impressive how he has bounced back from the first hour and a quarter of

:48:32. > :48:35.this match. As you mentioned, Simon, how dominant he has been his serve

:48:36. > :48:41.in the fourth set, I think that really has been as a result of being

:48:42. > :48:45.able to get into more of Muller's service games. He has felt more

:48:46. > :48:50.comfortable and confident, only dropping one or two points on serve

:48:51. > :48:56.in the fourth set, and we are now in a one set shoot out, but Muller is

:48:57. > :49:00.in the position almost that Nadal was in sets one and two. The tables

:49:01. > :49:06.are turned. The question is, how can Muller regroup and when he comes

:49:07. > :49:10.back on the court, the key thing will be that he needs to have the

:49:11. > :49:15.belief that he can win this final set. If he doesn't, coming up

:49:16. > :49:26.against a competitor like Nadal, it's hard to believe how he's going

:49:27. > :49:31.to be able to do it. There is an chair with uncle Tony. Carlos Moya

:49:32. > :49:38.takes over next year as the main coach, but he is not here.

:49:39. > :49:51.But Nadal was just really turning it on at the end of that fourth set,

:49:52. > :49:58.and it seems that the skill he has, coupled with the competitiveness, he

:49:59. > :50:03.is undeniable at the moment. I guess the bookmakers would have Gilles

:50:04. > :50:08.Muller at long odds against right now. Absolutely. Watching a match

:50:09. > :50:11.like this, one of the true greats of the game, you understand what

:50:12. > :50:14.separates great players from good ones. How many times in this

:50:15. > :50:18.tournament have we watched matches where a player goes two sets down,

:50:19. > :50:24.and it is not an extreme change, but they lose a bit of edge, and the

:50:25. > :50:28.third set is not as competitive. Straightaway, in that third set, as

:50:29. > :50:32.soon as Nadal won his first point, he showed Muller that there is still

:50:33. > :50:35.a match to be played here, right away. That is impossible to

:50:36. > :50:40.underestimate how big a skill and talent that is. Yes, and couple that

:50:41. > :50:46.with the record he has a matches like that, he is like a tidal wave.

:50:47. > :50:54.That is the reason why he is able to build his reputation in the first

:50:55. > :51:03.place. As he builds momentum with his achievements, it gets stronger

:51:04. > :51:10.and stronger and stronger. The serve for Muller is so key. It was the

:51:11. > :51:18.foundation of him going to sets up. -- two sets up. If he can keep

:51:19. > :51:25.holding serve, you never know. Maybe there is one bad service game left

:51:26. > :51:39.in Rafa, but it doesn't look like it at the moment. He is a fascinating

:51:40. > :51:50.watch. Even when he is still, which he rarely is. He is never still!

:51:51. > :52:21.They had a real treat, the 13,000 of them here around this court.

:52:22. > :52:33.We've been waiting for the umpire. He's back. Here we go, then, for

:52:34. > :52:41.this deciding set. Can Rafa come from two sets down and win a Grand

:52:42. > :53:02.Slam match? For the fourth time in his career.

:53:03. > :54:03.That's good to see. He has wiped the slate clean.

:54:04. > :55:22.Well, it was almost impossible to dig that one out.

:55:23. > :55:58.That is an encouraging start for his supporters. Just like Nadal after

:55:59. > :56:01.the first set, he has regrouped. Nadal's form, which was patchy in

:56:02. > :56:09.the first set, better in the second, even though he lost it, he has got

:56:10. > :56:14.stronger and stronger. He has got to a level where we doubt that the man

:56:15. > :57:03.from Luxembourg can reach. His serving is now of monumental

:57:04. > :58:14.proportions. 17 aces now. And that is the return that caused

:58:15. > :58:25.Nadal so much trouble in those first two sets. Obviously, Nadal's serving

:58:26. > :58:54.as vastly improved. -- has vastly improved since then.

:58:55. > :59:06.Oh, yes! There is the new Nadal backhand in all its glory. No wonder

:59:07. > :59:14.they are all on their feet. We have been talking about Nadal not having

:59:15. > :59:15.a weak opening any more. If ever you needed evidence... What a backhand

:59:16. > :59:54.that is! -- a weaker wing. APPLAUSE

:59:55. > :00:49.From the sublime... UMPIRE: Mr Nadal is challenging the

:00:50. > :00:57.call, left baseline. Was it because it hit the line, or was it just

:00:58. > :01:04.behind the line? The line it was. The call stands.

:01:05. > :01:17.UMPIRE: Mr Nadal has two challenges remaining.

:01:18. > :01:28.Oh, yes! A whole box of tricks has been unleashed now.

:01:29. > :01:33.The return was impressive. But equally how quickly he got into

:01:34. > :02:14.position. To hit that forehand winner.

:02:15. > :02:26.APPLAUSE The first serve was in. By one

:02:27. > :02:27.millimetre, he challenged it. That challenge, whether it could be

:02:28. > :02:45.costly. Good staff from Gilles Muller! Still

:02:46. > :03:04.assured on serve. He's telling Nadal, you've got to

:03:05. > :03:12.work for this, I'm not bowing down to you. How is it the bowl has

:03:13. > :03:17.managed to turn this match around? We look that serve placement of the

:03:18. > :03:22.first two sets, you can see, not the usual serving place for a lefty, not

:03:23. > :03:29.using the wide serve much at all. Some due 1% going down the middle.

:03:30. > :03:33.Skip that an sets three and four and look at that, specifically the wide

:03:34. > :03:38.serve on the out court, 60% out there. Also on the deuce court,

:03:39. > :03:43.favouring the wide serve us well. Gilles Muller, you are two sets up,

:03:44. > :03:47.why are you changing the winning tactic? Because Rafa Nadal has

:03:48. > :03:50.dropped back his returning position significantly. Three or four metres

:03:51. > :03:54.sometime in the first serve and equally back on the second serve.

:03:55. > :04:00.When Moulin is stepping up to the line he's thinking, where can I

:04:01. > :04:06.serve? -- when Muller. He has the, of course on a grass court -- he has

:04:07. > :04:55.to go wide. It has been enough to get two breaks.

:04:56. > :05:09.GASPS Such care and precision from Nadal!

:05:10. > :05:14.This is fantastic tennis. At this stage in the fifth set, every single

:05:15. > :05:42.point is so important. Oh, so good! Again, you can see, the

:05:43. > :06:40.shot was enough to win the rally in the end.

:06:41. > :06:51.Oh, it's just brilliant. He is challenging. It looks that first

:06:52. > :06:58.view as if it was in. It went in at huge pace, too.

:06:59. > :07:11.Unbelievable shot. Just so much spin on that, bringing it down to worth

:07:12. > :07:19.at the very last moment. -- down to earth.

:07:20. > :07:43.Listen to them! They love his spirit, Rafa Nadal.

:07:44. > :07:51.UMPIRE: Mr Muller is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:07:52. > :08:38.Oh! Just in case you didn't see it first time, I'll do it again!

:08:39. > :08:50.Oh! Three fantastic shots! Nadal might have thought that the return

:08:51. > :08:54.was going to be an outright winner. This is the pick-up of somebody who

:08:55. > :08:58.is comfortable at the net. Did nothing more than just but his

:08:59. > :09:02.racket out, let the pace and the ball do all of the work. -- put his

:09:03. > :09:20.racket out. Did you see the wicked swing on

:09:21. > :09:50.that?! It came to serve out wide, and you

:09:51. > :10:27.can see how Rafa was forced to take it and he still won the point.

:10:28. > :10:38.APPLAUSE He was pushed off balance. For the

:10:39. > :10:43.first time we're starting to see some hesitation from Muller. That

:10:44. > :10:44.was a short return from Nadal, expecting Muller to come forward

:10:45. > :10:57.into the net off that one. APPLAUSE

:10:58. > :11:14.A wonderful climax. There is no doubt that Gilles Muller

:11:15. > :11:20.has upped his game significantly between sets four and five. He has,

:11:21. > :11:24.I think the break after the end of the fourth set, she really took the

:11:25. > :11:28.opportunity to regroup. Also the fact that he is serving first in

:11:29. > :11:32.this fifth set could well make a difference, if he can hold one or

:11:33. > :11:36.two more times, suddenly being able to apply that scoreboard pressure on

:11:37. > :11:47.adult's service game could be a factor. You know, at this point, it

:11:48. > :11:50.has been a bit of a chess game in terms of the serve and return. But

:11:51. > :11:52.when you get to the real climax of the fifth set, willpower is

:11:53. > :11:55.really... It really does come down to that. A big shout from Muller

:11:56. > :12:00.when he helped that service game. He's definitely here for the fight.

:12:01. > :12:07.But if it's a battle of willpower, you wouldn't want to take on Nadal.

:12:08. > :12:15.That is a fair point. Prince Felix of Luxembourg. A big tennis player.

:12:16. > :12:16.Here to support his man, who is given a fabulous account of himself

:12:17. > :12:34.here. So, one break has been enough in

:12:35. > :12:52.every set so far. A bit of coaching there from

:12:53. > :13:10.Francesco Roy. Not seen by the umpire.

:13:11. > :13:23.Oh! A change of mind? Very unusual boldly from Nadal, that. -- very

:13:24. > :14:19.unusual volley. He stumbles slightly fair. -- there.

:14:20. > :14:23.It wasn't a confident volley, that. No question Nadal is giving himself

:14:24. > :14:27.a bit of a talking to on the volley here. Again, trying to hit that shot

:14:28. > :14:29.but just got far too much length on it. You've got to do one or the

:14:30. > :15:55.other -- trying to hit that shot. CHEERING

:15:56. > :16:06.Oh, just a sliver of a chance. But Nadal holds. Looking a little edgier

:16:07. > :16:10.then. We have seen in the last hour. He's certainly looking for a bit

:16:11. > :16:14.more conviction on those vollies. But the positive sign from the

:16:15. > :16:19.Bell's point of view is that he is looking to take the initiative. --

:16:20. > :16:23.from Nadal's point of view. Taking the territory that Muller hasn't

:16:24. > :16:46.taken. He knows that if he doesn't do that, his opponent well.

:16:47. > :17:44.APPLAUSE Electric speed, it was just too

:17:45. > :17:48.good. So well played from Muller, that

:17:49. > :17:53.forehand approach, so many times a player will be looking to hit that

:17:54. > :17:55.deep, so clever, bouncing on the surface, making it so much harder

:17:56. > :18:40.for Nadal to pick that up. A shot that would have been a

:18:41. > :18:58.formality in the first hour or so. But he wasn't missing a thing.

:18:59. > :19:40.Brilliant play! Superb exhibition of that play from Gilles Muller. Still

:19:41. > :19:44.very much in this. STUDIO: Yes, this is really tense,

:19:45. > :19:49.the fifth and final set, we'll be right back with it. Over on Centre

:19:50. > :19:55.Court, Roger Federer is cruising through, 6-4, 6-2. Now three match

:19:56. > :20:00.points against Grigor Dimitrov. That's on the red button, our

:20:01. > :20:05.featured match. Only been on here one hour and 27 minutes. When you

:20:06. > :20:10.see Raza struggling out on number one court, no, the first one gone --

:20:11. > :20:14.when you see Rafa. So much expected of this match, Roger up against the

:20:15. > :20:19.much role. He looks to be playing the best tennis of his career,

:20:20. > :20:22.trying to surge back into the world top ten. But it has certainly been

:20:23. > :20:31.all Federer today out on Centre Court. That is out! And so Roger

:20:32. > :20:35.marches on, and the crowd rises to him once again. We thought this

:20:36. > :20:39.might be a really tricky match for him. Dimitrov has been racing

:20:40. > :20:47.through his first three rounds. But no, Street sets win. -- straight

:20:48. > :20:50.sets win. The delighted fans on Centre Court really appreciated

:20:51. > :20:56.seeing him out on his favourite quote once again. 35 years old, and

:20:57. > :21:00.off he goes -- on his favourite quote. This will be on the red

:21:01. > :21:06.button feature match, Sascha Zverev 2-1 up against Milos Raonic. Making

:21:07. > :21:11.a break point there. That is on the red button. Back we go to Court

:21:12. > :21:14.Number One. COMMENTATOR: No brakes so far in

:21:15. > :21:33.this fifth set, no break points either.

:21:34. > :21:45.We thought it would be a match of tie breaks. There hasn't been won,

:21:46. > :21:49.and there won't be won, because this obviously will go the distance. It

:21:50. > :22:37.might well. Yes, he thought there would be a

:22:38. > :22:56.chance there to really put Nadal under pressure.

:22:57. > :23:19.Yes! Two or three metres behind the baseline.

:23:20. > :23:31.APPLAUSE Perfect serving from the Spaniard.

:23:32. > :23:40.CHANTING Nadal, Nadal. It must be tough for

:23:41. > :23:48.Muller to hear. UMPIRE: Thank you, ladies and

:23:49. > :24:08.gentlemen, the players are ready. APPLAUSE

:24:09. > :24:14.So often, and still so impressive. It's almost like in these last few

:24:15. > :24:15.games Muller has got used of the new return position of Nadal, he is got

:24:16. > :24:49.his rhythm back. They say that line has a rich vein

:24:50. > :24:57.for him on the out-of-court. -- the out-of-court.

:24:58. > :25:40.Mondal just not able to get the ball in play. Such a big game.

:25:41. > :25:47.GASPS A love service game for Gilles

:25:48. > :26:07.Muller. And it is so impressive. He looked

:26:08. > :26:11.at the end of the fourth set as if he was being overwhelmed by

:26:12. > :26:17.everything that Nadal brings to the court, physically, mentally, the

:26:18. > :26:23.whole package. But far from it. Yes, he did a fantastic job of

:26:24. > :26:29.regrouping. I do think in this fifth set he's been much more comfortable

:26:30. > :26:32.in his service game. Really finding his rhythm again, understanding what

:26:33. > :26:37.the Dell is trying to do to unsettle him. We've seen a lot more serve and

:26:38. > :26:41.volley from him over the last couple of sets, because Nadal being so far

:26:42. > :26:46.back, he saying, OK, if you're going to give me that much space, I'm

:26:47. > :26:50.going to come in and take it. Whether that will really pay off in

:26:51. > :26:54.the telling moments of the fifth set, we will have to wait and see.

:26:55. > :27:00.History tells you that Nadal comes through this. But maybe Muller

:27:01. > :27:31.hasn't read the history books. CHANTING

:27:32. > :27:36.Rafa, Raph. -- Rafa. Three hours and 12 minutes, we've been going. Nadal

:27:37. > :28:00.serving to stay in Wimbledon 2017. CHEERING

:28:01. > :28:32.The pressure. UMPIRE: Thank you, ladies and

:28:33. > :29:13.gentlemen, thank you. GASPS

:29:14. > :30:00.I don't believe that's... His second double fault of the

:30:01. > :30:11.match. A pedigree serve, but can he do it

:30:12. > :31:36.again? CHEERING

:31:37. > :31:59.Oh! It has been so good for him, that serve. Never better than that.

:32:00. > :32:10.We talked earlier in the match about producing tennis at the right times.

:32:11. > :32:20.Back to the wall for Nadal - an ace and to make big serves.

:32:21. > :32:33.-- two big serves. CHEERING

:32:34. > :32:36.We just witnessed something special. I was going to say unbelievable, but

:32:37. > :33:09.of course it is believable from Nadal. He is the ultimate Warrior.

:33:10. > :33:18.Oh! APPLAUSE

:33:19. > :33:26.The standard in this fifth set has been extraordinary. And in the last

:33:27. > :33:28.few minutes, as well, what a pick-up from Muller. A good move from Nadal,

:33:29. > :33:38.trying to sneak in. He got the curve, but too much

:33:39. > :34:54.length. An exquisite pick-up from Gilles

:34:55. > :35:00.Muller. In this cauldron of an atmosphere, and 11,000 of the 13,000

:35:01. > :35:05.who are here are against him, and he produces shotmaking like that. I

:35:06. > :35:11.know. We have to say, we have just witnessed brilliance from both

:35:12. > :35:16.players. For what Nadal did in that game at 15-40 was just, as you said,

:35:17. > :35:20.we say unbelievable, but not unbelievable because it is Nadal. We

:35:21. > :35:28.talked about willpower, everything you would want in this situation,

:35:29. > :35:32.Nadal has. But we cannot estimate the underestimate Gilles Muller. To

:35:33. > :35:37.come out and hold like that and just throw it straight back to Nadal and

:35:38. > :36:03.say, come on, I'm ready. Give it to me again. And he probably will.

:36:04. > :36:43.So, Nadal serves for the second time to stay in this.

:36:44. > :36:52.APPLAUSE We mentioned earlier, because the

:36:53. > :36:58.sets went so quickly, that it was unlikely to be a physical fatigue

:36:59. > :36:59.factor, and I think that remains, even though we have been going for

:37:00. > :37:43.three hours and 22 minutes. CHEERING

:37:44. > :37:49.A lot of people are laughing, it's that good. And for the first time in

:37:50. > :37:53.the match, Gilles Muller reading the Nadal drop shot. The strength it

:37:54. > :37:58.took for Nadal to jump up and get that much pace on that wall. One of

:37:59. > :39:01.the hardest shots in tennis. -- on that ball.

:39:02. > :39:09.Super angle at a stretch from Muller. Once again, he is two points

:39:10. > :40:39.from finishing this. How can he possibly be denied? And

:40:40. > :40:45.yet, he just might. It's still Muller who looks the more likely to

:40:46. > :40:46.break serve. It's a question of, what can Nadal do to upset the

:40:47. > :41:06.Muller rhythm again? Muller has helped a lot in his last

:41:07. > :41:08.two service games. Beautiful touch here to go ahead again. -- Muller

:41:09. > :41:37.has held till love. At full stretch, and again, got the

:41:38. > :41:41.control somehow. Just a stunning volley from Muller, dropping it

:41:42. > :42:40.short so Nadal has no chance to get there.

:42:41. > :43:27.Amazing how wide he was when he tried that.

:43:28. > :43:34.He hasn't used the slice much, Nadal. That time, the change of

:43:35. > :44:07.pace, just catching Muller off-guard.

:44:08. > :44:17.Was it the shot? I can see why he went for the shot, because Nadal

:44:18. > :44:19.really is so far back in the courts. It is a difficult shot when there is

:44:20. > :44:49.not much pace to work with. Well, it was another serve with a

:44:50. > :45:38.lot of spin. He has made errors. As you can see,

:45:39. > :45:55.40 of them. But none may be more significant than that one.

:45:56. > :46:00.He follows it up with that. That's a tell-tale sign. Here is Nadal, then,

:46:01. > :46:33.with break point. Oh! What a serve! That is the first

:46:34. > :46:38.break point Nadal has had in this set. Having gone wide so many times,

:46:39. > :46:50.such a good decision to go down the T with that serve.

:46:51. > :46:58.After making two horrific errors, he has played the last two points well.

:46:59. > :47:02.Great discipline on that volley, going behind Nadal. It is such a

:47:03. > :47:14.more difficult shot than running onto a forehand pass.

:47:15. > :47:35.Again, down the middle,... A quite extraordinary contest. He has been

:47:36. > :47:41.on the tour 17 years, Gilles Muller. This would be the winner of his

:47:42. > :47:46.career. It is almost like everything has been building up through all the

:47:47. > :47:51.years to this performance. Yeah, and it has. He has been really fantastic

:47:52. > :47:56.from the word go, and even the two set he lost, you cannot say he

:47:57. > :47:59.played bad tennis. He is playing against one of the players, if not

:48:00. > :48:04.the greatest competitor, that we have ever seen in the game. Just in

:48:05. > :48:09.that last game, you thought, are we seeing signs of mental fatigue, with

:48:10. > :48:13.the errors, or a bit of tension creeping in? As you rightly said,

:48:14. > :48:15.Simon, he bounced back with two fantastic points just when he needed

:48:16. > :48:34.it. So, Nadal serving for the third time

:48:35. > :49:45.to stay in the match. He chose to hit the forehand there,

:49:46. > :49:48.interestingly. It is still a forehand you would expect Nadal to

:49:49. > :49:49.make, but these are the type of errors that can creep in when the

:49:50. > :50:21.pressure is on. It looked for a fleeting moment as

:50:22. > :51:41.though it might creep over. A wonderful change of direction

:51:42. > :51:44.there. That is the shortest second serve we have seen for a while from

:51:45. > :52:19.Nadal. Muller, alert to it. So sharp, Nadal. It looks as though

:52:20. > :52:43.he has just come out on court, after three hours and 37 minutes.

:52:44. > :53:07.It's the second massive match that Gilles Muller has had. In this

:53:08. > :53:23.second round, he says two match points and won his match. Here, he

:53:24. > :53:35.has had two match points. -- he saved two match points.

:53:36. > :53:47.UMPIRE: Mr Nadal is challenging the call. It looked in, and Nadal,

:53:48. > :54:38.having challenged, is moving across. UMPIRE: The call stands.

:54:39. > :54:47.Almost identical spot to the first one. Those second serve

:54:48. > :54:51.opportunities, you can see Nadal talking to his box after the last

:54:52. > :54:55.one. At this point in the match, you need to make all of those because

:54:56. > :55:23.you know Muller has got big serves in him.

:55:24. > :56:05.He did so well to judge the bounce as well as he did.

:56:06. > :56:14.The new version of the Nadal backhand strikes again. That's

:56:15. > :56:15.exactly why he is standing a bit further back - a good hit on the

:56:16. > :56:52.ball. Well, it's the match of Wimbledon so

:56:53. > :56:58.far. Three hours and 41 minutes, and the entertainment has never flagged.

:56:59. > :57:03.We sensed there could be something special when Muller started so well,

:57:04. > :57:12.took that first set. We were really surprised when he took the second.

:57:13. > :57:22.Nadal has just dug in and shown all the extreme qualities that we love

:57:23. > :57:26.him for. Well, he almost had it too easy in the first three rounds,

:57:27. > :57:34.didn't drop a set all the way through. And he won Roland Garros at

:57:35. > :57:42.a canter. Suddenly, this guy has come along to railroad him. And he

:57:43. > :57:55.has held his nerve so well, Gilles Muller.

:57:56. > :58:38.So, Nadal, serving for the fourth time to stay in Wimbledon.

:58:39. > :58:51.Again, he kept so cool. Nadal, continuing to ask the question. And

:58:52. > :59:51.there is the answer. Oh! Did so well to wrong-foot Nadal.

:59:52. > :01:13.No wonder he's cursing. After three and three quarters

:01:14. > :01:19.hours, we continue. Still looks as fresh as a daisy. There they are on

:01:20. > :01:41.Henman Hill. Having a great time. This is some match.

:01:42. > :02:07.Muller continues to look high school. -- ice cool.

:02:08. > :02:15.It's as if he's played these matches all his life. You're right, he looks

:02:16. > :02:47.so calm. He doesn't waste any energy at all.

:02:48. > :03:35.The return asked the question. Muller, that time, not with the

:03:36. > :03:40.answer. It just does not take much to go from one look like a

:03:41. > :03:41.comfortable service game... One double-faulted and Nadal has a

:03:42. > :04:46.sniff. The stakes are higher. Nadal making

:04:47. > :04:51.sure of that. It was Nadal's length on his ground strokes doing all the

:04:52. > :05:31.damage. Not allowing Muller to take advantage of the forecourt.

:05:32. > :05:50.Here is a guy who's lost his last 22 matches against top five players,

:05:51. > :05:58.who's been on the tour 17 years and never won at idle until this year.

:05:59. > :06:01.He's won two this year. Now he's in the match of his life against a

:06:02. > :06:07.Rafael Nadal who's been playing some of the best tennis of his career.

:06:08. > :06:12.It's safer nominal performance. It really is, and he's looked

:06:13. > :06:17.completely unfazed from the staff, he had believed from the start that

:06:18. > :06:24.he had the game on this surface to trouble Rafael Nadal and he's been

:06:25. > :06:29.proved absolutely right. It's not so much the quality of his tennis,

:06:30. > :06:34.which of course has been impressive, but the way he's handled himself on

:06:35. > :06:37.the court in these really, really high-pressure moments against one of

:06:38. > :06:44.the greats of the game. He hasn't looked faced at any point. He made a

:06:45. > :06:51.couple of errors at 6-6, but he bounced back. And he's had to take

:06:52. > :07:10.on most of the crowd. About 95% of them. Rooting for Nadal.

:07:11. > :07:32.For a fifth time, he serves to stay in the match.

:07:33. > :07:49.Brilliant. I'm surprised Muller didn't come in behind his forehand.

:07:50. > :07:50.Could have had Nadal on the ropes. Exquisite touch, though, from the

:07:51. > :08:41.Spaniard. Again, Merlot so clever, didn't go

:08:42. > :08:48.for anything too much. -- Muller so clever. There's hardly been a

:08:49. > :09:29.flicker of emotion from him right the way through.

:09:30. > :09:33.They've seen him come through situations like this year after

:09:34. > :09:38.year. I'm sure they believe he's going to

:09:39. > :10:28.do it again. Nadal says to him, not that time! I

:10:29. > :10:35.may have been burnt many times out there, but ready for this. Fantastic

:10:36. > :10:40.forehand from Nadal. You can see him muttering to himself all the time,

:10:41. > :10:56.willing himself to get ahead in one of these Muller service games.

:10:57. > :11:05.Whichever way he chooses to go on that serve, especially in the last

:11:06. > :11:12.15 to 20 minutes, just out of the reach of Nadal.

:11:13. > :11:37.It's not going to stop him going there.

:11:38. > :12:22.A game that backhand return. Muller didn't have a prayer. -- a gain

:12:23. > :12:34.How quick was Rafa in there? Great movement from Nadal. Not only that,

:12:35. > :12:37.when he got up to the net, didn't try to do too much, played himself

:12:38. > :13:18.into position. The slice just undid him. It is

:13:19. > :13:27.break point for Nadal, only his second break point of the set. His

:13:28. > :13:55.record isn't good, as you could see. He trusted in that backhand. And

:13:56. > :14:01.Muller trusted in his. What a response from Gilles Muller! You

:14:02. > :14:16.thought... Nadal asking the questions. What a passing shot!

:14:17. > :14:34.It can get windy on Court One. Muller thought this was sailing out.

:14:35. > :14:42.Inside the line! Second chance for Nadal.

:14:43. > :14:56.Just couldn't get close enough to pull the trigger. That volley was

:14:57. > :15:02.just short enough from Gilles Muller. If that had been a foot or

:15:03. > :15:03.so deeper it would have been straight into the stride of Rafael

:15:04. > :15:20.Nadal. One of his biggest mistakes in four

:15:21. > :15:33.hours. Could it be his most costly? UMPIRE: thank you, thank you,

:15:34. > :15:55.players are ready. Nadal just making sure, he's going

:15:56. > :16:02.to challenge, but I think it's a forlorn challenge. An unusual

:16:03. > :16:05.mistake for him to make. Confused look from Nadal because it was a

:16:06. > :16:23.great return. Just pushing that long.

:16:24. > :16:31.The volley wasn't quite good enough. And Nadal again and electric in his

:16:32. > :17:09.movement. UMPIRE: Correction. Replay the

:17:10. > :17:15.point. And he will get a first serve. That's really tough on Nadal

:17:16. > :17:26.losing a first serve on the correction. Good correction, too.

:17:27. > :17:36.UMPIRE: First service. Mr Nadal with no challenges remaining.

:17:37. > :18:28.Wouldn't you know it? That was travelling.

:18:29. > :18:39.With all his strength, he couldn't do enough. Too short. Suitably

:18:40. > :18:43.mopped up by Muller. Having saved four break points, Muller has this

:18:44. > :19:27.to go ahead again. And Nadal not too aggrieved that the

:19:28. > :19:32.intervention, the correct intervention, from the umpire. And

:19:33. > :19:38.it was important. We are fortunate to be so close to the players,

:19:39. > :19:44.studying Nadal's facial expressions in between those points. I'm not

:19:45. > :19:48.sure the crowd were quiet during any of those pounds -- points, but Nadal

:19:49. > :19:54.was so calm between the points, shaking off the previous point. The

:19:55. > :20:00.overall was unlucky, but he viewed it as being out of his control. It

:20:01. > :20:06.was the second serve return, he mis-hit it and he knew it was a

:20:07. > :20:12.chance. Very frustrated. But look at Muller, he hasn't blinked. Mentally

:20:13. > :20:17.for him is quite a phenomenal performance. Even for Nadal this is

:20:18. > :20:23.a big match. He's played maybe 15 or 20 of these matches in this -- in

:20:24. > :20:29.his life, similar to theirs. Muller, never. This is new territory. He's

:20:30. > :22:16.found out what strong character he's got.

:22:17. > :22:34.I think it's out. We can't see the line judge. Yes, it is out.

:22:35. > :23:26.Backhand to the rescue. He was concerned about the serve being

:23:27. > :23:32.called out, he can't challenge, out of challenges. We're pretty sure it

:23:33. > :24:12.was out. Indeed, we've had that confirmed by Hawk-Eye.

:24:13. > :24:25.How brave was heaved there? Great play from Nadal. But for Gilles

:24:26. > :24:30.Muller, two second service from 0-30. Almost reverting to just

:24:31. > :24:31.hoping Nadal makes the error. It's not what's got him into this

:24:32. > :25:02.position in the match. It's in. A simply glorious shot.

:25:03. > :25:50.It's his third match point. 55 minutes, nearly, after his first.

:25:51. > :26:53.He's done it so many times it's almost mundane.

:26:54. > :27:03.How on earth did he get to that first one? He had no right! Just

:27:04. > :27:12.when you thought this slice was enough. Just getting a racket onto

:27:13. > :27:51.it. Quite a good match, this! It's growing, isn't it?!

:27:52. > :27:56.Bit of a stumble but I don't think he would have got to it. Magnificent

:27:57. > :29:04.play from Gilles Muller. Just got a bit of a kick. Muller was

:29:05. > :29:05.really going for that, trying to be aggressive. You can hardly blame

:29:06. > :29:33.him. It was a little ambitious. Nadal, on

:29:34. > :30:09.the baseline, would probably have got to that.

:30:10. > :31:54.Nadal in a frenzy. Looks like Muller has been in a fridge!

:31:55. > :32:03.He's got no challenges. I think it was OK. I can understand why he is

:32:04. > :32:47.perturbed but that is the problem. The 11th time he goes in front in

:32:48. > :33:01.this set. Gilles Muller will be licking his

:33:02. > :33:10.lips about this. Marin Cilic earlier on today beat Roberto Bautista Agut.

:33:11. > :33:16.A bit of a contrast to this. He was in court for about ten minutes. Just

:33:17. > :33:27.as well there is a day off in between matches in the Grand Slams.

:33:28. > :33:36.We know all about the strengths of Nadal, mental and physical. What is

:33:37. > :33:41.so impressive about Muller is that he has matched him, physically and

:33:42. > :33:45.mentally. Absolutely, all the chances he has had, you look, he has

:33:46. > :33:50.been a better player in this fifth set, he has been the one who has

:33:51. > :33:54.looked like he could win this match. Very dominant on his service games.

:33:55. > :33:58.Nadal is quite simply just refusing to be beaten. Through every ounce of

:33:59. > :34:16.his competitive instinct. For the seventh time, he serves to

:34:17. > :34:37.stay in the match. He is pointing to something, I don't

:34:38. > :35:13.quite know what it is. It is part of a temporary structure

:35:14. > :35:23.at the top of this Court One stadium. Something reflecting back

:35:24. > :35:32.on him. Maybe there is a reconstruction going on, not during

:35:33. > :35:38.the tournament but all around it. UMPIRE: If we can have four or five

:35:39. > :35:41.people stand behind that balcony. LAUGHTER

:35:42. > :35:47.Use asking the spectators to stand up!

:35:48. > :36:53.Super, aggressive play from Gilles Muller. Nadal couldn't cope with the

:36:54. > :36:59.power. Absolutely, it is Muller again, all the success in the return

:37:00. > :37:46.games. Hard down the middle, just so affected. -- effective.

:37:47. > :37:52.They are saying that he did the right thing, I think that's the

:37:53. > :38:03.right tactic from them even if it wasn't from him. Got to keep him

:38:04. > :38:51.buzzed. After getting pinned in that corner,

:38:52. > :39:20.he found the forehand he wanted. He needed to be that good.

:39:21. > :39:35.Team Nadal are willing the man on but you have to wonder how much

:39:36. > :39:38.pressure can he withstand? It feels like every single game, he is 0-30

:39:39. > :40:54.or break point down. What on earth was that? He went for

:40:55. > :40:57.the drop shot and then I think flashbacks of what happened in the

:40:58. > :41:32.last game changed his mind. Would have been a clean winner.

:41:33. > :41:37.Can't forgive himself for that but it will all be forgotten in a few

:41:38. > :42:19.seconds time. He gritted his teeth but he came out

:42:20. > :42:46.smelling of roses. It is totally in the balance. All

:42:47. > :42:54.the signs would point normally to Nadal here, physically, mentally,

:42:55. > :43:00.performance wise. And yet, what we have seen in the last four hours or

:43:01. > :43:04.so, makes it a 50-50 call. Absolutely and even this fifth set,

:43:05. > :43:11.Muller has looked like the more likely to come through this match.

:43:12. > :43:17.Almost all the way through it. Nadal will just be absolutely kicking

:43:18. > :43:21.himself in the last game. 15-30, a slow second serve and dumping it in

:43:22. > :43:27.the net. Do you think there will come a point when stamina plays a

:43:28. > :43:31.part? Presumably. It hasn't been the most sapping of matches even though

:43:32. > :43:38.it has lasted over four hours. I think you are right. I think it will

:43:39. > :43:42.come in at some point. More men to lead and physically. We have seen a

:43:43. > :43:47.few errors from Muller but he has always managed to regroup on the

:43:48. > :43:49.next point or a couple of points later, just in time. At some point,

:43:50. > :44:09.somebody has to blink. This is not just the best much of

:44:10. > :44:15.the tournament but the longest one also. Just overtaken Bedene against

:44:16. > :45:45.Karlovic. Nadal trying to muscle his way past

:45:46. > :45:52.Muller. Muller with the better timing. It was the first forehand of

:45:53. > :45:55.Nadal in that round, he played himself out of position but that is

:45:56. > :46:04.too good from Gilles Muller from that shocked onwards. -- from that

:46:05. > :46:18.shot onwards. UMPIRE: Mr Muller challenging the

:46:19. > :46:20.call. He's using one challenge here. I think he has seen some chalk on

:46:21. > :46:30.the ball. UMPIRE: Mr Muller with two

:46:31. > :47:46.challenges remaining. So Nadal now has three challenges

:47:47. > :48:02.left to complete reset at 12-12. Muller with three also. Just

:48:03. > :48:11.thinking of those 23 aces,. A lot of free points from Nadal. Certainly in

:48:12. > :48:17.sets three and four, the impact of his serve started. It's a

:48:18. > :48:31.celebration of what has been a great afternoon and a riveting evening.

:48:32. > :48:42.UMPIRE: Thank you, you can continue the next changeover. Thank you.

:48:43. > :49:07.It is the first time I have heard an umpire deal with a Mexican wave in

:49:08. > :49:19.that way. Very effective, stopped immediately!

:49:20. > :50:37.It really is marvellous play from Muller.

:50:38. > :51:00.Generally, his service games have been so much easier than Nadal's.

:51:01. > :51:03.Yes and I think what Nadal did with his return position really worked,

:51:04. > :51:08.in terms of dropping back and giving him some time. It does look to me

:51:09. > :51:12.like Muller has found a way to tackle that, using the wide service,

:51:13. > :51:19.especially on the ad court, then following it in with a volley.

:51:20. > :51:22.Nadal, it is time to really make that up slightly, give Muller

:51:23. > :51:23.something different to look at because it has been very comfortable

:51:24. > :51:32.in his service games. It is a light evening, we will be

:51:33. > :51:50.fine for light. 8:20pm, we have got at least another

:51:51. > :51:58.hour and a quarter of daylight. But it is starting to become a real

:51:59. > :52:08.marathon. Still packed out on the hill. Hardly anyone is left -- has

:52:09. > :52:21.left Court Number One. It is the ninth time he has served

:52:22. > :54:10.to stay in the match. A really good serve. Couldn't even

:54:11. > :55:31.block it back. The wind is beginning to get up. It

:55:32. > :55:38.is a pretty well in closed court but you can see Muller's shirt being

:55:39. > :55:58.ruffled quite a bit. You can hear it a little bit as well.

:55:59. > :56:06.Nadal just going all the way back to his instincts, just doing everything

:56:07. > :56:17.he can to make his opponent play as many balls as possible.

:56:18. > :56:26.The longest rally in this match, 12 shots.

:56:27. > :56:36.Not what you normally associate with a Nadal match.

:56:37. > :58:05.Still not a flicker of emotion from him. As if he does this every day.

:58:06. > :58:19.Such a contrast, they make, with Nadal, so full of hustle and bustle

:58:20. > :58:25.and energy, emotion. This guy. He would be a great poker player. Yes,

:58:26. > :58:31.there is no way you want to take Nadal at his own game. He is by far

:58:32. > :58:38.the best at that. Muller has done such a great job of reacting to what

:58:39. > :58:43.Nadal has done. Served and volleyed so much. Keeping the ball so low,

:58:44. > :58:48.every passing shot Nadal has to come up with is very often from below the

:58:49. > :58:59.height of the net. Immediately giving Muller more time to see the

:59:00. > :59:00.next shot. Nadal comes up with a tenth time to stay in the

:59:01. > :59:51.tournament. Just looking down, this set has

:59:52. > :59:58.lasted 132 minutes. Just this one set which is bound to be longer than

:59:59. > :00:35.the whole of the Cilic match. Against Roberto Bautista Agut.

:00:36. > :01:20.Now then. More pressure on the Nadal serve.

:01:21. > :01:26.Fed up with himself because he felt he would have a good chance to get

:01:27. > :02:09.some match points there. Think of the ball kids. Match point

:02:10. > :02:53.number five. After 17 years, it's the win of his

:02:54. > :03:01.life and the double champion is beaten. A titanic match. Nadal, as

:03:02. > :03:08.ever, so sporting. It is Muller's day.

:03:09. > :03:34.He's waited a tennis lifetime for this. Nadal loses nothing in defeat,

:03:35. > :03:41.but try telling him that. He played his part in a quite magnificent

:03:42. > :03:48.match and he played awfully well. On this day, this evening, it wasn't

:03:49. > :03:58.good enough. People standing all around this Number 1 Court.

:03:59. > :04:24.What a man he is, Rafael Nadal. Will you ever hear a loud ovation? Just

:04:25. > :04:31.incredible. Muller proved he has the mental strength of a champion. Great

:04:32. > :04:36.that Nadal can stop, having been beaten, and he must be bitterly

:04:37. > :04:43.disappointed, but he signs some autographs. He is a fantastic role

:04:44. > :04:48.model. (STUDIO) and that is the biggest

:04:49. > :04:53.upset of these championships. The longest match of Wimbledon 20 is

:04:54. > :04:58.deemed so far. Rafa Navarro, the fourth seed, has gone. Beaten by

:04:59. > :05:05.Gilles Muller, 34 years old. Let's hear from him now.

:05:06. > :05:11.Many congratulations. How do you feel after that epic match against

:05:12. > :05:16.one of the game's great players? Tired! It was a long match. I was

:05:17. > :05:22.two sets up. Rafa stepped it up and that the end it was just a big

:05:23. > :05:27.battle. I had match points, I believe I had four and didn't make

:05:28. > :05:31.them so it was getting really tough. I was also watching the sky because

:05:32. > :05:38.I was feeling it would be over pretty soon. When I had the last two

:05:39. > :05:46.match points, I said give it a shot, go 100%. Great feeling to win. Rafa

:05:47. > :05:51.came back from two sets down and its 2-2, a lot of people think Rafa will

:05:52. > :05:56.win. How did you keep your composure and your belief in the fifth set? I

:05:57. > :06:00.didn't feel like I played bad in the fourth set so I told myself to keep

:06:01. > :06:06.it up and if it's not happening, he's just too good. I started

:06:07. > :06:10.serving a bit better, maybe. At the end it's just the matter of a few

:06:11. > :06:18.points here and there. It's tough to say what made the difference at the

:06:19. > :06:22.end. When you won, what was the feeling like knowing you had done it

:06:23. > :06:25.in such a big match with so much at stake? I don't know, I haven't

:06:26. > :06:30.really realised what just happened! It's a great feeling. I was worried

:06:31. > :06:34.it would be over pretty soon. I was thinking about what to do, to come

:06:35. > :06:40.back the next day and finished the match. I'm just glad it's over and

:06:41. > :06:44.I'm in the quarterfinals. Were you aware of Prince Felix of Luxembourg

:06:45. > :06:52.in the stands? I heard he was going to come. We know each other, he's a

:06:53. > :06:53.big tennis fan, the Royal family of big tennis players. Great fun to

:06:54. > :07:05.have him here. Well played. Gilles Muller, the 16th seed, from

:07:06. > :07:14.Luxembourg, has knocked out Rafael Nadal. Four hours and 48 minutes.

:07:15. > :07:19.15-13 in the fifth set. Wimbledon have just announced there will be no

:07:20. > :07:25.further played tonight. Novak Djokovic, who was due to follow that

:07:26. > :07:30.match, will have to come back tomorrow. It's a huge result for

:07:31. > :07:35.Muller. He's got a good record on grass this year but everyone thought

:07:36. > :07:39.Nadal was in the form of his life, having won his tenth French Open

:07:40. > :07:46.championship. John McEnroe and Tracy Austin are with me. All of the last

:07:47. > :07:53.16 apart from Djokovic and man Arena in action. Your reaction? Nadal was

:07:54. > :07:58.playing great leading up to this tournament. He was unbelievable on

:07:59. > :07:59.the clay. You get
