:01:44. > :01:46.The last 8 includes Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Djokovic. Their
:01:47. > :01:51.proven form here makes them favourites to go through, but as we
:01:52. > :01:54.saw with Rafa, upsets do happen. Well to day 9 for some more

:02:40. > :02:43.Murray. By this evening, eight will become four and we'll know the
:02:44. > :02:47.line-up for the men's semifinals here at the Championships. The
:02:48. > :02:52.tension is high and the stakes are high as the tournament reaches the
:02:53. > :02:57.business end. Good afternoon on court today are four quality men's
:02:58. > :03:01.quarterfinals at Wimbledon and if Andy triumphs today, it'll be the
:03:02. > :03:08.first time in 50 years that a British man and a British woman have
:03:09. > :03:10.made it through to a Wimbledon semifinal, after Jo Konta's
:03:11. > :03:14.incredible victory yesterday. These are special days for British tennis
:03:15. > :03:21.and we are lucky to witness these two playing at their best. While we
:03:22. > :03:25.are here at the BBC celebrating 90 years of covering the Championships,
:03:26. > :03:29.guess what this, could be one of the best. But, we won't get ahead of
:03:30. > :03:31.ourselves. We will go back to today. It is men's quarterfinals day. Here
:03:32. > :03:44.is how they match-up in draw order: Already a great British Wimbledon
:03:45. > :03:56.Andy Murray could make it Bert by reaching the semifinals for the 8th
:03:57. > :04:05.time. Murray faces Sam Querrey. 34 Giles Muller is in the form of his
:04:06. > :04:09.life but maybe the best is still to comfort big-serving left-hander. He
:04:10. > :04:15.is up against Marin Cilic who has flieded through the draw. He has yet
:04:16. > :04:19.to drop a set. Milos Raonic reached the final last year and the
:04:20. > :04:25.big-hitting Canadian knows how to beat the best at Wimbledon. He plays
:04:26. > :04:27.Roger Federer, who is in an unprecedented 50th Grand Slam
:04:28. > :04:29.quarterfinal. But the record he really wants is an 8th Wimbledon
:04:30. > :04:38.title. The Wimbledon grass brings out the
:04:39. > :04:47.best in Tomas Berdych and the Czech is aiming to reach the semifinals
:04:48. > :04:50.for the second year in a row. Berdych must overcome three-time
:04:51. > :04:55.champion, Novak Djokovic. He's had a tough 12 months but it looks like
:04:56. > :05:00.the former world number one is back to his best. Well those are the four
:05:01. > :05:08.matches we can look forward to. Here on BBC One, we will be a be heading
:05:09. > :05:13.to Centre Court to watch Andy Murray who has just taken the first set and
:05:14. > :05:17.following him it is Roger Federer against Milos Raonic and on BBC Two
:05:18. > :05:19.shortly, Giles Muller has taken the first set against Marin Cilic, will
:05:20. > :05:20.shortly, Giles Muller has taken the first set against Marin Cilic, will
:05:21. > :05:23.it be another upset and Tomas Berdych against Novak Djokovic. All
:05:24. > :05:29.those matches to look forward to. Everyone enjoying the weather here
:05:30. > :05:32.today. Up on Henman Hill we had horrible rain yesterday but I'm
:05:33. > :05:39.pleased to say it has been good so far. Let's find out if there is rain
:05:40. > :05:42.on the horizon. Here's Carol? Not today. We are looking at cloud
:05:43. > :05:46.continuing to break up. Plenty of sunny spells. We have a northerly
:05:47. > :05:51.breeze which is adding a chill to the forecast. It should ease through
:05:52. > :05:57.the afternoon and with highs up to 22 or 23, it'll feel pleasant. As we
:05:58. > :06:00.head on into the evening, very much the same. The temperature only
:06:01. > :06:07.dropping by a couple of degrees and it should stay dry. Into tomorrow,
:06:08. > :06:13.again it is a bit more of the same. We are looking at a fine start to
:06:14. > :06:16.the day, some sunshine around. A little bit of fair weather cloud
:06:17. > :06:23.bubbling up through the afternoon but that won't cause problems. If
:06:24. > :06:28.anything, it is going to be a degree or so warmer than we are looking at
:06:29. > :06:30.this afternoon. One thing, the pollen levels today and tomorrow
:06:31. > :06:35.will be high. Thank you very much, Carol. It is a
:06:36. > :06:41.little blustery, that may affect players on Court Number One where
:06:42. > :06:48.they don't have the roof. We were wondering how tired Giles Muller
:06:49. > :06:57.might be, well it seems not, he has taken the first set off Marin Cilic.
:06:58. > :07:01.Ta match on BBC Two in a moment. -- that match. And here on Centre
:07:02. > :07:16.Court. Well, it was Andy Murray on court against Semi
:07:17. > :07:24.-- Sam Querrey and he made the walk on to Centre Court to huge cheers,
:07:25. > :07:32.the defending champion. Well that was about an hour ago up against the
:07:33. > :07:39.big-sevening American, Sam Querrey and Murray struck in the first game.
:07:40. > :07:46.He broke his serve. And that's key, and Murray kept his serve. Here he
:07:47. > :07:51.is at 5463 with set point. -- at 5-3 with set point. So Murray takes the
:07:52. > :07:58.first set in 28 minutes. He is on his way. So that was a short time
:07:59. > :08:03.ago. On to the second set now. It is on serve with Querrey leading 3-2.
:08:04. > :08:11.Let's join the commentators, John McEnroe and Andrew Castle. ANDREW
:08:12. > :08:20.CASTLE: Well, Querrey was dealing with nerves and two or three minutes
:08:21. > :08:27.can make a difference. Big Sam Querrey who beat Djokovic last year.
:08:28. > :08:35.He beat Rosol. He is a fighter. It is hard, John McEnroe to know what
:08:36. > :08:41.he can do to change, to bring himself into this match as a factor.
:08:42. > :08:45.If you were coaching him what would you say? Obviously the serve is a
:08:46. > :08:50.big factor in terms of what particular shot can keep him in the
:08:51. > :08:54.shot but to me, the emotional intensity, he needs to show more
:08:55. > :08:59.fight, more grit. Outward emotion. To me, he needs to engage more
:09:00. > :09:05.people in the crowd to get more respect. To me. It is not his
:09:06. > :09:11.nature. 'S shy guy. Tall guy, from Santa Monica, likes to hide under
:09:12. > :09:15.his hat, do his thing. He is an excellent player and if you want to
:09:16. > :09:21.do something extraordinary on this court and get to your first semi in
:09:22. > :09:25.a slam, you have to get out of your comfort zone, to me. Or at least a
:09:26. > :09:36.little bit. Two former champions at Queen's
:09:37. > :09:39.Club. Querrey winning that event in 2010. Five timesp Andy Murray a
:09:40. > :10:08.champion. I wonder if Querrey is all the way
:10:09. > :10:15.back, you know physically. It is a bit of a concern watching him move
:10:16. > :10:20.around so far, early in this first set-and-a-half. Two tough
:10:21. > :10:53.five-setters on route to his quarter here.
:10:54. > :11:04.The big legs there of Sam Querrey. What would be a slight concern is if
:11:05. > :11:08.he was unable it get over to that volley. Murray makes life miserable
:11:09. > :11:14.up there and keeps it low and makes you hit tough shots. It is one of
:11:15. > :11:19.his favourite plays, to drop the two-hander down to the big Guy's
:11:20. > :11:41.feet. I watched him do it plenty to Raonic last year in the final.
:11:42. > :11:49.If you are a fan of Querrey, I'm hoping that when given the
:11:50. > :11:52.opportunity, he is going to become more aggressive on that second
:11:53. > :11:58.serve, in particular. Murray, smartly, keeping his percentage
:11:59. > :12:19.high, 70% so far. Not giving query a whole lot of opportunities.
:12:20. > :12:27.Oh - what? That was unusual. Lucky. It landed like an egg going flat on
:12:28. > :12:43.the top of the net. Look at this. And it has top-spin on it, normally,
:12:44. > :13:20.that would pop up a little higher. Still game point.
:13:21. > :13:28.Changes at 7 and now the 9th game we're playing, you would think it
:13:29. > :13:33.would be a prime moment. You mentioned that the balls are even
:13:34. > :13:39.more beat up. They count the warm-up as two games. And you're not exactly
:13:40. > :13:42.going too big in the warm-up. This is a chance for Murray to step it
:13:43. > :14:01.up. Querrey is getting frustrated he is
:14:02. > :14:18.not able it bring his A-game to the occasion, so far.
:14:19. > :14:24.Well, you cannot just counter his backhand when he is in this mood.
:14:25. > :14:28.The first one a cross-court, the second one, laser-like down the
:14:29. > :14:34.line. Sam was far back. He chose to come in. And he never could get
:14:35. > :14:36.himself comfortable, get in a good position. Excellent play. Suddenly,
:14:37. > :14:54.0-40, second serve. Murray thought the serve was out. He
:14:55. > :15:08.would not challenge and stop the point.
:15:09. > :15:17.Let's look at a replay and see if in fact that serve was in that Murray
:15:18. > :15:24.was complaining about. It may not matter. Still break point. Oh, that
:15:25. > :15:27.was top of the net. Lowest, hard on the net as well. Three foot high
:15:28. > :16:07.there. Oh, ow. Self-flagellation on Centre
:16:08. > :16:21.Court. Here's the point. You could argue over that. I could. This will
:16:22. > :16:24.be a get away if Querrey gets it. He is still grumbling about that 0-40
:16:25. > :16:39.call. And that is a beautiful, beautiful
:16:40. > :16:51.shot You love it. I did love it. Such greatp hands. He gets it down
:16:52. > :16:59.low again. Querrey is forced to come up and improvise.
:17:00. > :17:08.Whatever it was, it was a thing of beauty to see.
:17:09. > :17:28.The third at 0-40 was out. -- the serve. It was.
:17:29. > :17:32.He is hoping it doesn't matter. He is getting his fourth opportunity
:17:33. > :17:47.here. UMPIRE: Game Murray, new balls,
:17:48. > :18:03.please. Murray leads by 4-3, second set and
:18:04. > :18:07.by 1-0. Well there you go, Andy Murray assumes total control of this
:18:08. > :18:11.quarterfinal and this backhand is just a stunning shot.
:18:12. > :18:18.How do you attack it? Unless it is unbelievably low, you are cutting
:18:19. > :18:25.the ball, so it stays just above the surface or hitting it so hard. You
:18:26. > :18:30.can't hit through it. It is a good point which is why, if I were game
:18:31. > :18:37.planning against Murray, if I'm coming in, I'm not coming in on that
:18:38. > :18:44.side. I'll make him beat me on the forehand. Look at the variety.
:18:45. > :18:54.Big targets, nowhere near the line, you know he is not going to miss any
:18:55. > :18:59.of these, like Djokovic. Well, we had a set yesterday when Jo Konta
:19:00. > :19:03.was playing and her forehand was hit harder than Murray's. She hits an
:19:04. > :19:08.incredible well-paced forehand and backhand but a lot of what Murray
:19:09. > :19:12.does is deliberate. He is mixing up the paces. I was taught by someone
:19:13. > :19:17.who told me - never hit the same shot twice. It seems like Murray had
:19:18. > :19:23.that same sort of guidance when he was young. It makes it so difficult
:19:24. > :19:30.and miserable to play him. To get a feel for what he is going to do. How
:19:31. > :19:34.do you game plan, if you are Querrey for the low backhand volleys at your
:19:35. > :19:54.feet? Awfully tough to deal with. UMPIRE: Let, first service.
:19:55. > :20:01.I don't know if Sam understood how important it was for that hold at
:20:02. > :20:26.0-40, to get back, if he could've won that game.
:20:27. > :21:07.You'd Bert step it up now, if you're Querrey. -- you'd better step it up.
:21:08. > :21:43.You have to find that gear. Murray showing his first signs of
:21:44. > :21:55.some tightness. So, he is trying to stop him from
:21:56. > :22:35.getting a huge lead. Oak, yes, coming in with power this
:22:36. > :22:41.time and exerting power by hitting his foot. Andy Murray, disappointed
:22:42. > :22:45.with that, a poor game from him. But credit to Querrey for attacking.
:22:46. > :22:53.Well, what he did was, he hit it quite a bit harder which wouldn't
:22:54. > :22:57.allow Murray the time to set up that low ball. That is an incredible game
:22:58. > :23:01.for Querrey. A game-saving, a match-changing game for him. She'll
:23:02. > :23:43.be pleased. That's Abbey Dixon, Sam's partner.
:23:44. > :23:48.Murray is going to be forced to regroup, mentally. Things seemed to
:23:49. > :24:25.be all going his way. And that is upping the heat. 133
:24:26. > :24:29.miles per hour. Two games to Querrey. We've talked about
:24:30. > :24:45.Querrey's character. He is very shy. I don't think he likes the limelight
:24:46. > :24:52.too much. But he was on a show in America called the Million air
:24:53. > :24:58.Matchmaker. It is like the Bachelor, and the girl who won the chance to
:24:59. > :25:06.go out with him never returned his texts. That's a bunch of baloney.
:25:07. > :25:10.How is your book going? I hope it is going OK. A couple of people are
:25:11. > :25:18.interested. That's your second volume. How many volumes do you have
:25:19. > :25:24.in you? A trilogy, or maybe when I'm 70, or 75 or maybe not but in the
:25:25. > :25:28.meantime I'm going to tell you something for Querrey. That 4-3 game
:25:29. > :25:34.to be a career-changing game. If he wins this - because he was out... He
:25:35. > :25:41.was done. I'm telling you. If he steps it up here. I'm not saying he
:25:42. > :25:45.is an incredible player but this is an opportunity that I didn't expect
:25:46. > :25:50.I would see. An hour played in this quarterfinal. First set to Murray on
:25:51. > :26:59.one break. He had a break but lost it in this second set.
:27:00. > :27:06.Jamie Delgado in the middle there. He played over 20 Wimbledons
:27:07. > :27:37.himself. Smart play. It is. Take it. Take it
:27:38. > :27:42.to the opposition. Absolutely. It is tougher to come up with that when
:27:43. > :28:14.you are trying to stay in the game. Suddenly we may have a match here.
:28:15. > :28:23.It's hard to know what the score is when you look at Sam Querrey.
:28:24. > :29:17.UMPIRE: Let, first service. It is a bit of a turn-up. From a set
:29:18. > :30:06.and a break, Murray now, set-point down.
:30:07. > :30:18.You can't ask for a better weapon ban Sam Querrey had inheres
:30:19. > :30:21.forehand. He mis-hit that -- band Sam Querrey had in his forehand. He
:30:22. > :30:49.mis-hit that and what a disappointment.
:30:50. > :31:00.That is a strange loss of control and the backhand that Murray hit
:31:01. > :31:23.previously wasn't exactly out of the middle. Second set point to Querrey.
:31:24. > :31:39.Why not? Fantastic forehand top-spin deep into the court. He gets the
:31:40. > :31:44.short ball and then crunches it. And suddenly, it's game on. Not since
:31:45. > :31:48.2009 have we seen an American semifinalist at this level, which is
:31:49. > :31:54.hard to believe, and Sam is saying, if you don't want to win it, I will.
:31:55. > :31:59.It is inexplicable to see what happened in the last ten minutes. It
:32:00. > :32:03.just shows you what nerves can do to anyone. He seemed to be just
:32:04. > :32:11.cruising along, no real stress or sweat. Outplaying Querrey and Ben
:32:12. > :32:20.out of nowhere, he is back in the mix, big-time. That game there, to
:32:21. > :32:27.get that break, the initial break, suddenly put shock waves through
:32:28. > :32:32.this crowd Andy Murray's game dropped off considerably in that
:32:33. > :32:38.set. Just lost the ones that survive in this tournament until that one.
:32:39. > :32:46.That was to Fabio Fognini. Querrey is a different capital -- a
:32:47. > :32:49.different kettle of Fish. Querrey only had two opportunities, bottom
:32:50. > :32:56.right of the page, and took two of them. Well done to Sam Querrey. He
:32:57. > :33:00.has had a lot of coaches over and one of the shots they have them
:33:01. > :33:03.working on is taking the backhand early. You can't neutralise people
:33:04. > :33:09.without backhand, you have to take it on, and straight from the
:33:10. > :33:15.practice Court Two Centre Court, it paid off. You can see the pace he
:33:16. > :33:21.can get on any ball. You saw it in a COBOL code when he beat Thiem,
:33:22. > :34:24.Kyrgios and Nadal to win the thing. -- you saw it in Acapulco.
:34:25. > :34:33.This would be the last thing you would want, to build up momentum and
:34:34. > :34:39.beliefs and dump your game in the first service game -- dump your
:34:40. > :35:10.serve in the first game of the third set.
:35:11. > :35:33.Oh, that's got to be a challenge. Mr Querrey is challenging the ball on
:35:34. > :35:37.the baseline. The ball was called in. That's got to be very close.
:35:38. > :35:43.Maybe it caught the side of the line. Let's see. The call stands.
:35:44. > :36:15.Was that first serve? Well, that's very commendable,
:36:16. > :36:20.obviously, for Murray, but extremely disappointing for Querrey. He had
:36:21. > :36:27.belief for the first time in this match. That is what, I mean, I know
:36:28. > :36:31.it's early and he could come back, but that's when you've really got to
:36:32. > :36:34.bear down. That's extremely unfortunate for the big American
:36:35. > :36:51.there to dump serve. Not a good game.
:36:52. > :36:59.I'll tell you, the best guys, the challenges -- the champions, they
:37:00. > :37:05.shrug it off. It wasn't easy for Murray to move past that, but he did
:37:06. > :37:12.it. If you look at his body language and you didn't know the score, you
:37:13. > :37:45.would think it would be Querrey that just blew the second.
:37:46. > :37:51.That's a good job by Querrey to keep his composure. A well struck Murray
:37:52. > :38:13.forehand. That came off, out wide. Swinging a
:38:14. > :39:20.little bit early on that ball. It must be nice for Murray to play
:39:21. > :39:32.somebody relatively normal in tennis terms. He has played Boo Blick, who
:39:33. > :39:36.was a little zany in tennis terms, Dustin Brown and Fabio Fognini. They
:39:37. > :39:44.are definitely top ten in zany tennis terms. Maybe top five?
:39:45. > :39:58.Definitely. Kyrgios would be up there. Definitely top ten, for sure.
:39:59. > :41:12.He has got a few tricks up his sleeve.
:41:13. > :42:02.we will be right back with this match but let's have a look at the
:42:03. > :42:11.feature of British tennis. McCue has just put out the sixth seed in the
:42:12. > :42:22.Junior Championships. He is one of Andy Murray's regular training
:42:23. > :42:27.partners here and he loves taking on board all the advice he has to give.
:42:28. > :42:33.He has certainly taken it on board, because he has gone through really
:42:34. > :42:43.well and is through in the Junior Championships here at Wimbledon. Not
:42:44. > :42:49.such a great game for the Liverpudlian brothers. They have
:42:50. > :42:58.gone out on straight sets. Back we go now to Centre Court.
:42:59. > :43:07.In the bright sunshine, after an hour and 12 minutes of play, it is
:43:08. > :43:21.two sets to one to Andy Murray. That annoys you, doesn't it? When it
:43:22. > :43:27.hits the line and stops. I think it annoys everybody. You expect it to
:43:28. > :43:32.come in a certain area and suddenly it is held up and you are away in
:43:33. > :43:37.front of it. I can't understand why the line pigment make such a
:43:38. > :43:41.difference. Why can't it move through the court in the same way?
:43:42. > :44:10.Why can't it bounce in the same way? I knew it annoyed you.
:44:11. > :44:18.That was certainly an unusual passing shot. He was forced to
:44:19. > :44:45.squash shot it, Murray. It almost worked.
:44:46. > :44:55.Querrey tried stepping in and it's pretty clear that most of this
:44:56. > :45:00.match, Murray isn't going for his biggest serve. Encouraging, dare him
:45:01. > :45:14.to do it. Get that percentage down. Currently at 62%. 114 mph. Seemed to
:45:15. > :45:46.be at the wheel of Querrey, dumped into the net.
:45:47. > :45:53.Easy to say from here, but the aggression affected the pitch. No
:45:54. > :46:00.need to hit it that far. People so got to play some percentage tennis.
:46:01. > :46:04.A quick visit to the shot before they got here. In fact, that might
:46:05. > :46:25.have come from Southfields tube station, I think.
:46:26. > :46:36.That's just the type of adjustment you hope to see. When he is
:46:37. > :46:46.aggressive and forces Murray to hit that passing shot.
:46:47. > :47:32.Get around on as many forehands as possible if you are Querrey.
:47:33. > :47:38.Oh, yes. That was time standing still. When that goes over your
:47:39. > :47:49.head, everything goes into slow motion. Very annoying if you are the
:47:50. > :47:56.guy. Oh, no, I know it's going in. You know it. Nicely done. And he's
:47:57. > :48:02.wondering what happened on that first service game once again in
:48:03. > :48:18.this third set. One set all, break to Murray once again. Barker: We
:48:19. > :48:27.will be back on centre in just a moment but this is the match on BBC
:48:28. > :48:31.Two at the moment and Gilles Muller is on 92% of first serves in this
:48:32. > :48:35.match. An awesome percentage, so really difficult for Marin Cilic.
:48:36. > :48:40.That tie-break could be very close. We will continue to keep you
:48:41. > :48:42.up-to-date with that much on BBC Two here are BBC One as well. Back we go
:48:43. > :49:01.to Centre Querrey was down a set and a break
:49:02. > :49:05.and there will be no panic from him, because he came back. He knows he
:49:06. > :49:09.can do that. Look at the way that string reverberates after contact.
:49:10. > :49:17.That's the biggest change in the game. Not the frame but the way the
:49:18. > :49:25.strings are. I don't want to call it a rookie mistake but Querrey was
:49:26. > :49:30.tight and gave away that first set, then he found something he didn't
:49:31. > :49:31.expect and break twice to win the second set, only to dump serve at
:49:32. > :49:45.the start of the -- only to dump serve at the start
:49:46. > :49:55.of the third. That's not going to do it if you are playing Murray. He's
:49:56. > :49:56.got sweet hands. You have not to give him plenty of time to assess
:49:57. > :50:27.his options. Frustrating, as he sent some
:50:28. > :50:35.vulnerability from Murray, Querrey must have seen it, pulled out the
:50:36. > :50:38.second set, and that the is when you really have to you recognise your
:50:39. > :50:40.opportunity. A golden chance for him to really take it to the number one
:50:41. > :51:30.seed. He hasn't done it. Murray, as we have seen so often,
:51:31. > :51:37.showing such emotional strength in coping with whatever he has two.
:51:38. > :51:45.Back in the drivers seat at one set all. Can Querrey do the unexpected
:51:46. > :52:34.again? That would really be surprising. Get back into this set?
:52:35. > :52:46.That rose up off the court, didn't it? Reared up and the speed is one
:52:47. > :52:51.thing, but when it bounces up off of the six foot six frame of Sam
:52:52. > :52:56.Querrey, that's something else. New balls. Those balls are flying
:52:57. > :53:01.through the air. This is what they mean by saying that he can take the
:53:02. > :53:02.racket out of another player's hand. There's sometimes just nothing you
:53:03. > :53:20.can do. Game, Querrey. Thank you very much.
:53:21. > :53:29.It's amazing how he seems to be noticeably limping, shrinking. Yes,
:53:30. > :53:33.and then he sprints after a ball like a gazelle. Now, listen, I know
:53:34. > :53:34.you don't with Gopher these graphics and bits and bobs, but we think you
:53:35. > :53:54.were like this. Look at the difference in his
:53:55. > :54:05.backhand, do you like that? Is this graphic acceptable for you? I do
:54:06. > :54:15.like that. Having worked with me, he likes the detail. Was he a detailed
:54:16. > :54:23.man? Absolutely. Very much. For me, I am more about feeling it, but the
:54:24. > :54:29.great players can shift on what they see in the match. Nonetheless, I
:54:30. > :54:33.would have told you from the very beginning that Querrey needed to be
:54:34. > :54:43.more aggressive of the return of serve, no question. Everyone is up
:54:44. > :54:48.there in the Royal box today. They are waiting to see whether this
:54:49. > :55:03.becomes a great match or not. This, the opening offer of Centre
:55:04. > :55:05.Court today. Roger Federer versus Milos Raonic, last year's semifinal
:55:06. > :55:27.next up. You don't see him laughing off too
:55:28. > :55:59.many misses. Normally very dependable with that shot.
:56:00. > :56:11.Cue more than made up for it there. A half-volley drop shot. Just
:56:12. > :56:14.getting the pace of the ball as you move your racket away from it, ever
:56:15. > :57:00.so slightly. Just wonderful. What used to be a rare and beautiful
:57:01. > :57:03.thing is now commonplace, isn't it? The accuracy on passing shots has
:57:04. > :57:15.made for being so difficult. That's true.
:57:16. > :57:28.You still think it would be tougher to hit that type of shot at 15-40
:57:29. > :58:21.than 40-15. Querrey has got to still move forward.
:58:22. > :58:31.Really, these are great days for British tennis. Johanna Konta into
:58:32. > :58:37.the semifinals, Andy Murray who's been in eight of the last
:58:38. > :58:44.quarterfinals, only Dimitrov managed to beat him in a quarterfinal, the
:58:45. > :58:51.LTA really are trying to improve British tennis. The matching of a
:58:52. > :59:02.worth of money as well from local businesses and councils to add
:59:03. > :59:06.covers to courts and facilities so that the inspiration of this man can
:59:07. > :59:13.be followed up. I see all these kids playing around at sports days on my
:59:14. > :59:16.way in my motorcycle, I'd love to see them playing tennis rather than
:59:17. > :59:42.the egg and spoon race, but bless them for being active.
:59:43. > :00:18.Murray is trying to get this second set, get up two sets to one.
:00:19. > :00:26.It was a bit about up here. Sam Querrey's just trying to step even
:00:27. > :00:31.close and hope that you get a mistake. Rob Lee not going to happen
:00:32. > :00:37.on that shot. Just stand there and lead the entire court open --
:00:38. > :00:42.probably not going to happen. Take one for the team if necessary. Just
:00:43. > :01:01.hover over him and make him hit you! This is a little tense, isn't it?
:01:02. > :01:11.This game is a bit tense. As well it should be.
:01:12. > :01:16.Bury up a break for - three, lost three straight games and served
:01:17. > :01:27.twice. -- Murray. The bad part of his mind reminding
:01:28. > :01:37.him right now that he's done that, he's got to overcome that.
:01:38. > :01:43.Oh! That's what you can do to an 84 mph second server. Querrey forcing
:01:44. > :01:55.himself forward. Mis-hit. Slightly. Is that the sun coming out just at
:01:56. > :02:46.that moment? History repeating itself in the
:02:47. > :02:54.second set, although he didn't serve for that. The sun is in a terrible
:02:55. > :03:00.position for the ball toss, he's going to have to adjust that tours.
:03:01. > :03:29.Further over to the left-hand side. -- adjust that toss.
:03:30. > :03:37.Well, it's a challenge, but I'm not sure Murray is convinced it's going
:03:38. > :03:41.to be successful. Unbelievable that Querrey has done it again. And
:03:42. > :03:50.exactly the same way, with his driving backhand. Well, couldn't buy
:03:51. > :03:56.a first serve in that game, son or not.
:03:57. > :04:15.UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenged the call, the ball was called in.
:04:16. > :04:56.SLOW CLAPPING CHEERING
:04:57. > :05:00.Giggle that is a tremendous, tremendous lob. How was the drop
:05:01. > :05:12.shot -- that was a tremendous lob. Querrey is a bit weary from all the
:05:13. > :05:22.running he did at that point, he might have to go for that.
:05:23. > :05:25.It's a good job, the chance to lead for the first time in this match,
:05:26. > :05:33.finally. The last time he was in that
:05:34. > :06:01.position was when he lost his opening service game.
:06:02. > :06:48.GASPS APPLAUSE
:06:49. > :06:52.Looking to go after that second serve.
:06:53. > :07:25.Querrey hit one of the best ones he had in the match today.
:07:26. > :07:50.Have you got any theories as to what is going on here? I mean, whilst I
:07:51. > :07:55.salute Sam Querrey's effort coming back inserts two and three from a
:07:56. > :07:59.break down, there certainly has been a bit of a let down. Andy Murray's
:08:00. > :08:05.standard when he's been in those positions. I think the people that
:08:06. > :08:12.are so long in tennis, you can see pretty clearly in this particular
:08:13. > :08:13.match how emotions pretty clearly in this particular
:08:14. > :08:19.play such a huge factor. In a match of this magnitude. There's never
:08:20. > :08:26.been a big match, arguably, for Querrey. If you can win this he will
:08:27. > :08:31.get to his first ever slam. We know how much pressure Murray has been
:08:32. > :08:35.under. Not the same now, he's won it twice, been there and done that. And
:08:36. > :08:41.yet out there he's trying to actually execute, he's probably not
:08:42. > :08:44.100% physically, he couldn't quite get it over, there can't be any
:08:45. > :08:50.other reason, the just tightened up. He's human. You know, he's going
:08:51. > :08:55.down after somehow, you got to move past that, that's the tough part.
:08:56. > :09:02.The best guys do it better than everyone else. You say forget about
:09:03. > :09:09.it, a lot easier said than done. Incredible chance for Querrey in
:09:10. > :09:16.this set. The crowd has really been a nonfactor so far. Unlike the
:09:17. > :09:55.contact match yesterday. -- the Johanna Konta match.
:09:56. > :10:02.As I say, is the most important tie-breaker of Sam Querrey's life to
:10:03. > :10:03.take place. The most important couple of minutes, potentially, in
:10:04. > :11:01.his career. So far this tournament, Querrey has
:11:02. > :11:04.won three and lost one. Andy Murray just played the one against Benoit
:11:05. > :12:27.Paire, you might remember, from the first set.
:12:28. > :12:42.the discipline. He's got to that return. -- he's got to make that
:12:43. > :13:08.return. Oh! Why he didn't let that one
:13:09. > :13:25.bounce. It's got to increase the speed as it
:13:26. > :13:30.is coming down a little bit from that high up. The bounce takes that
:13:31. > :14:00.out of the equation, but too late now.
:14:01. > :15:17.Well, a terrible, terrible tie-break so far for some wary. -- for Sam
:15:18. > :15:20.Querrey. It started with that return. On the second serve just
:15:21. > :15:28.went from bad to worse. That's right. Unfortunate for Querrey, as
:15:29. > :15:33.hard as he's worked to get back in this set, what an opportunity.
:15:34. > :15:40.Murray is hobbling. There's no question... Is certainly not walking
:15:41. > :15:45.like... Is running well! We'll see if it affects his serve and all. I
:15:46. > :16:32.don't think so there. UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenges the
:16:33. > :16:36.call at the left nearside lying. It's a challenge, I think it was in.
:16:37. > :16:42.We've been told again and again that Andy is fine.
:16:43. > :16:50.That he is as fit as ever and he's always walked like he's walking now.
:16:51. > :17:02.As a man with a metal hip, I can tell one who's got a hip problem Oh!
:17:03. > :17:11.He needs to finish this off. He's had enough leads in this match both
:17:12. > :17:16.in the second set and the third set. We don't want to lose... I say we,
:17:17. > :17:22.not impartial! He doesn't want to lose this first point.
:17:23. > :17:26.This is the end where the sun is an issue. It has poked its head out
:17:27. > :18:00.again. That's a heck of a shot. Querrey
:18:01. > :18:05.returning the favour. He's seen enough of those in this match. He
:18:06. > :18:07.elected to get the first deal in. How quick can we see him do it this
:18:08. > :18:36.time? Yes! Good serve out wide, it brings
:18:37. > :18:37.in the third set. 2-1, Murray in the sunshine of Centre Court, this has
:18:38. > :18:55.not been easy. Well, you know what, John, I suppose
:18:56. > :18:59.if it was easy, everybody would be doing it. That's true. And you have
:19:00. > :19:04.to credit Murray with coming up with the goods there. Sam Ward like that
:19:05. > :19:09.tie-break back. He did play it well. -- Sam Ward like.
:19:10. > :19:15.This is the service motion. He's been talking about it himself for
:19:16. > :19:22.weeks, we've noticed that he is likely hippie, of the right hip, as
:19:23. > :19:25.far as we can tell. It's not stopping him winning matches, which
:19:26. > :19:31.is the key element. And when he's running he's absolutely fine. Firmly
:19:32. > :19:37.enough, when you miss serves, it hurts more! -- funnily enough. Did
:19:38. > :19:41.you notice that, everything hurts more when you miss? It's when you
:19:42. > :19:47.have trouble sleeping with hip problems that you have to speak to a
:19:48. > :19:53.surgeon. Did you never have anything? No, I got the hips right.
:19:54. > :19:59.This has been interesting, for sure, this match. The ebbs and flows were
:20:00. > :20:05.routine for Murray. Some cause for concern. He has shown some real
:20:06. > :20:12.fortitude when he's needed to. Sam has stepped it up at times,
:20:13. > :20:17.unexpectedly. Not able to seize that opportunity, and you wonder how many
:20:18. > :20:22.more he's going to get at this stage, unless Murray is hurt.
:20:23. > :20:26.Querrey has been the guy who has had the tough road to the quarters. He
:20:27. > :20:32.seems to have found his second wind. He was a bit sluggish early, tight.
:20:33. > :20:41.The first set was run away, the second set he should have lost. This
:20:42. > :20:45.set, looked out of it. Again, he hit that chance, as you pointed out, not
:20:46. > :20:56.a good tie-break. Let's see if he can shrug that of.
:20:57. > :21:00.Well, it does appear at the moment that he is really taking quite a bit
:21:01. > :21:10.off his serve. Some of it may be tactical, because
:21:11. > :21:11.Sam has done a better job as this match has progressed, attacking the
:21:12. > :21:37.second serve, some of it physical. Well, vignetting bad, the net,
:21:38. > :21:44.stopping Murray on full sprint there -- the netting there. It looked like
:21:45. > :21:50.a jet landing on the aircraft carrier. Decelerating with a bad
:21:51. > :21:52.hip. Don't use the net if you can, if the point is over. Like a
:21:53. > :22:08.wrestler just bouncing on it! Oh! The court is a bit firm, we saw
:22:09. > :22:18.that in the heat. The kick-serve bounces up a lot higher than normal.
:22:19. > :22:35.He has won 57 matches at Wimbledon has Andy Murray over his career.
:22:36. > :22:44.Only just Sir Richie and Arthur Gore have more wins at Wimbledon. Who?
:22:45. > :22:49.Sir Richie was more of a roll and a table tennis player but he won a
:22:50. > :22:54.gold, silver and bronze at the London Olympics. He lost of the Gore
:22:55. > :23:00.in the final, who has won the most matches, there you go. -- he lost to
:23:01. > :23:03.offer Gore. How did I not know?! He was a notable rower, it says. In
:23:04. > :23:30.notable rower, playing tennis! Seeing Sam just out there, you know,
:23:31. > :23:38.I know that's the way he operates, it's the way he's been.
:23:39. > :23:57.You know, he may never have the opportunity again.
:23:58. > :24:59.UMPIRE: New balls, please. He's got a tremendous serve on him.
:25:00. > :25:04.His father Michael was drafted by the Detroit Tigers baseball team,
:25:05. > :25:08.but he turned that down and went to play college baseball. And then he
:25:09. > :25:13.went into the financial world, his father. He was the absolute inverse,
:25:14. > :25:21.Sam. He was offered a scholarship to go to an American university, but
:25:22. > :25:25.elected to turn pro instead. The USC, the University of Southern
:25:26. > :25:34.California, a great university. One of my daughters goes there. It's not
:25:35. > :26:04.cheap, is it? No, it's not. Tracy Austin's kids... It goes on and on.
:26:05. > :26:11.Murray is certainly giving off the vibe that he's not right. That's
:26:12. > :26:18.right. So, Sam seems to be picking up on that.
:26:19. > :26:26.He's recognising this incredible opportunity he has.
:26:27. > :26:37.There it is again. It's not the 98, it shouldn't go that wide. That's
:26:38. > :26:42.exactly what you should attempt to hit if you're Querrey, well done.
:26:43. > :26:59.Relatively safe shot for him. That triple break point.
:27:00. > :27:08.And he's pulled off the playing surface once again! Andy Murray, and
:27:09. > :27:13.he hobbles to the change of ends. And that is the only way you can
:27:14. > :27:16.really describe this gate, he might have straightened up a little bit as
:27:17. > :27:23.he was walking past his opponent there. But that's not permanent. For
:27:24. > :27:28.the first time, Murray has a lead in a set first. He has a lead with a
:27:29. > :27:34.break of serve -- Murray. That is a pretty strong effort from him. He
:27:35. > :27:40.has battled exceptionally hard -- Sam Querrey has a lead. As the match
:27:41. > :27:45.has gone on, it appears that Murray is losing some steam on the servers,
:27:46. > :27:50.no question, he's not moving quite as well. He has lost his last 35 set
:27:51. > :28:02.matches, Murray. The last one he won was against Tsonga here last year.
:28:03. > :28:11.He's been certainly around the tour, his fitness level, after he got his
:28:12. > :28:15.first Wimbledon, two sets up. Johannsson at Queen's Cup as well.
:28:16. > :28:19.Think about the physical work is done since then. That's not going to
:28:20. > :28:27.happen, is it? It's just this hip area. At 26 or 27 my hip started to
:28:28. > :28:32.go, it never was the same. I have a much better idea how to handle it,
:28:33. > :28:36.deal with it. Physios and doctors and people around the sport, but
:28:37. > :28:40.it's still a tricky spot. The way that they torture their bodies, they
:28:41. > :29:27.just swing so hard. It's called the line. Very
:29:28. > :29:46.disappointing for Andy Murray, of course.
:29:47. > :29:49.And the thing is that Querrey today is moving better than he has right
:29:50. > :30:01.now. The entire part of this match so
:30:02. > :30:13.far, he's looking like he's got himself going big-time.
:30:14. > :30:24.Boy, he tiptoed around that last backhand but to take a swing at the
:30:25. > :30:28.forehand was impressive. It looked like he was hoping that return would
:30:29. > :30:30.go out instead of trying to set him up for that backhand. Still an
:30:31. > :31:14.excellent return by Murray. He has kept his man positive over
:31:15. > :31:22.the course of the last two years, get him to two Wimbledon
:31:23. > :31:28.quarterfinals. He lost to Anderson in the fourth set and still
:31:29. > :31:38.rebounded. He has shown some mental fortitude here. In the third round,
:31:39. > :31:45.he was forced to wait overnight in the fifth set against Tsonga. Came
:31:46. > :31:50.out and broke serve. This is quite an eventful five matches now for
:31:51. > :32:17.Querrey. That's it. Taking you back to 2012,
:32:18. > :32:22.when he contested the second longest match in Wimbledon history. Last in
:32:23. > :32:32.the third round to Cilic, 17-15 in the fifth. He's looking to take this
:32:33. > :32:34.to a fifth and if he gets this break, that will be an odds-on
:32:35. > :33:06.probability. Not missed by much, either. Sam's on
:33:07. > :33:08.it right now. Remember, he's never, ever been in a Grand Slam semifinal.
:33:09. > :33:47.Uncharted territory. You know, the fire is not fair, is
:33:48. > :33:54.it, for Murray, who so quickly well whip around and talk to the box, use
:33:55. > :33:58.the energy from the crowd and his coaches, his wife. Everybody, he
:33:59. > :34:06.will engage. He is flat as a pancake.
:34:07. > :34:14.Definitely not right, whether its concentration are entirely physical,
:34:15. > :34:18.either way the combination sees him down 4- and a quarter set. And just
:34:19. > :34:23.to finish the point on Sam Querrey and his marathon antics, he played
:34:24. > :34:32.the doubles here with Gilles Muller and they lost first round in five
:34:33. > :34:39.sets. He I said Warrior. We haven't given enough credit to his fitness.
:34:40. > :34:43.And Murray, we've got to be extremely concerned because he has
:34:44. > :34:48.gone extremely flat, emotionally out of it right now. He's sizing up
:34:49. > :34:52.things as we speak. We don't know physically what's going on. He's
:34:53. > :34:57.going to have to do try to tap into something and regroup so that by the
:34:58. > :35:04.beginning of this fifth set, which would be extremely surprising if we
:35:05. > :35:09.don't see it, he's ready to go. Five set matches, the ebbs and flows of
:35:10. > :35:13.concentration are so different to three sets. It's still the ultimate
:35:14. > :35:20.test and I love it. It's what Grand Slams are about. I hope they never
:35:21. > :35:25.lose it. I agree and I think they should at the very least have a
:35:26. > :35:30.tie-breaker in the fifth set. I would even say may be slightly
:35:31. > :35:36.earlier in the fifth set. It's been a tussle already for both these
:35:37. > :35:40.guys, emotionally, physically. But it goes to a fifth, Querrey looks
:35:41. > :35:55.like he is cruising, cruise control now.
:35:56. > :36:05.Murray almost being forced to guess, he's that confident in his movement
:36:06. > :36:13.at the moment, that's for sure. He would have thought we'd be looking
:36:14. > :36:15.at that graphic. -- who would have thought we'd be looking at that
:36:16. > :36:44.graphic? The marathon match you referred to,
:36:45. > :36:48.Cilic beat Querrey in the second longest match at Wimbledon. That may
:36:49. > :36:57.happen again, the way things are going. The way things are going,
:36:58. > :37:00.Cilic is up in his match and Querrey is heading for a fifth set.
:37:01. > :37:26.Unbelievable. Everything is working at that moment
:37:27. > :37:45.for the big man from Southern California.
:37:46. > :37:54.I don't think Murray wants to be serving second in the fifth set. He
:37:55. > :38:30.will make a real effort to at least make Querrey serve this out.
:38:31. > :39:10.He's feasting on that second serve now. Believe it or not, set point
:39:11. > :39:55.for Sam Querrey. He's hitting off one leg at the
:39:56. > :40:35.moment. No sense of balance to his stroke.
:40:36. > :40:41.The racket head, you lose control of that if the base isn't there. Set
:40:42. > :41:00.point. A quick match. Only two hours and 15 minutes.
:41:01. > :41:14.That's the end of that. Once again, Querrey going five sets. It's been
:41:15. > :41:20.awhile since Murray was pushed that much here but one wonders at the
:41:21. > :41:27.beginning of this fifth set whether Murray can find something from
:41:28. > :41:31.somewhere or whether he will call a medical time-out. Technically, he
:41:32. > :41:38.wouldn't be able to because he was taking this injury on court with
:41:39. > :41:50.him. Who was the last man to win 35 setters to win a -- to win three
:41:51. > :41:54.five setters to win a Grand Slam? I think it was Roger Federer in
:41:55. > :41:58.Australia. Sam Querrey could be the next man up. I think he would have
:41:59. > :42:05.had a very sizeable bet that that wouldn't have happened. I'm
:42:06. > :42:11.surprised actually that Murray hasn't called the trainer. He needs
:42:12. > :42:17.to pull that leg right out. It feels so compressed. You can feel the
:42:18. > :42:20.difficulty he is having in that right hip area and no matter how
:42:21. > :42:25.many reassurances we have had from the Murray camp, that he is fine,
:42:26. > :42:32.that is not the evidence I have seen with my own eyes. As this match has
:42:33. > :42:38.progressed, Querrey has dominated, sensing vulnerability and taking
:42:39. > :42:46.full advantage, to his credit. Let's give credit to his fitness, people.
:42:47. > :42:48.Because he is looking better than he looked at the beginning in terms of
:42:49. > :43:05.his movement. That is saying something.
:43:06. > :43:09.And that man, Mr Rod Laver, know something about winning here. And
:43:10. > :43:34.everywhere. That's an excellent volley by
:43:35. > :43:38.Querrey. He's done a nice job mixing up the Punch follies, using some
:43:39. > :44:06.touch of his own. Why doesn't he go up there more often?
:44:07. > :44:20.He needs the crowd on this one, Murray, get him out of his bunk.
:44:21. > :44:47.I think he played a match, was it here, I don't know if you remember
:44:48. > :44:53.it, where he hit 15 misses in a row. Was that against Cilic? The Cilic
:44:54. > :45:01.matching 2012. 17-15 in the fifth. Out on Court Number Two, it went on
:45:02. > :45:10.for ages, the second longest match in history. The Whaley is looking at
:45:11. > :45:15.the moment, he could be one of the great returners in history. This is
:45:16. > :45:22.a very important game, because Murray didn't have anything going at
:45:23. > :45:28.all in the fourth set, even at the end of the third set. It's been 45
:45:29. > :45:30.minutes since Murray had any kind of winning with them. He needs to hold
:45:31. > :47:43.here to have any chance. That is beautifully done by Querrey.
:47:44. > :47:50.It's as good as I've ever seen him move. I can't believe how well he's
:47:51. > :47:54.getting round the court. After two tough five setters. You didn't think
:47:55. > :47:55.you'd get another chance there, but he did, and he's got a view break
:47:56. > :48:27.points. It had to be perfect because you saw
:48:28. > :48:50.it. It just didn't bounce high enough for this guy, he's so tall.
:48:51. > :48:56.And it's away and there's just no base that he's hitting off, there's
:48:57. > :49:02.no strength in the lower half of the body. His average first serve speed
:49:03. > :49:09.is way down from what it normally is. Four or five miles an hour less
:49:10. > :49:14.generally in this tournament but he's really lacking pace. Querrey is
:49:15. > :49:21.getting a lot of returns back, subsequently. He couldn't possibly
:49:22. > :49:28.have expected to be in this position right now. This is an unbelievable
:49:29. > :49:38.chance for him. The last man in a Grand Slam semifinal from the United
:49:39. > :49:45.States of America, Andy Roddick. And in that semifinal, 2009 Wimbledon,
:49:46. > :50:10.he put on a masterclass tactically to beat Andy Murray.
:50:11. > :50:13.He sure looks unstoppable at the moment. Everything working for
:50:14. > :50:49.Querrey. And since that dominant performance
:50:50. > :50:53.in the third set tie-break, it's just been one-way traffic, hasn't
:50:54. > :50:59.it? Nine games to Querrey and just one to Murray. That is insects four
:51:00. > :51:05.and five. Clearly physically there is an issue. It's not making excuses
:51:06. > :51:11.for the home player. We have enjoyed over the years the top seed care.
:51:12. > :51:18.We've got to hand it to Querrey. I remember last year when Milos Raonic
:51:19. > :51:24.was making his run, he was slated to play Novak Djokovic Chile quarters
:51:25. > :51:35.who he's never beaten, but instead he's playing Sam Querrey at the
:51:36. > :51:42.moment. It was a great opportunity for both of you and you've got to
:51:43. > :51:47.take advantage of it. Murray appeared to be in cruise control,
:51:48. > :51:53.his Battle impeded. You put yourself in a position, he did beat Novak
:51:54. > :51:59.last year, so you knew he was capable. And then he backed it up by
:52:00. > :52:07.beating Matthew, which showed great professionalism. It's only one break
:52:08. > :52:47.but it feels like this is really slipping away.
:52:48. > :53:38.He could really use the crowd now. Trying to find the will and
:53:39. > :54:39.wherewithal to play this out. Querrey exposing this physical
:54:40. > :54:43.issues Murray seems to be having to get down, twist around and deal with
:54:44. > :55:30.that low ball. Hard to imagine that Andy Murray,
:55:31. > :55:36.even in the physical state that he's in, is not going to have at least a
:55:37. > :55:52.half chance somewhere along the line to break back.
:55:53. > :55:59.But, first things first, you have to hold serve. I mean, to go down 4-0
:56:00. > :56:51.now, that would be curtains. He's not only expecting the very
:56:52. > :57:02.things you just said, he'll get his chance.
:57:03. > :57:06.Just casting a faint shadow over the net that ball is it just dribbled
:57:07. > :57:29.over. it's a whole blood serve for Murray
:57:30. > :57:35.but he won't have been too pleased to hear that new balls are coming
:57:36. > :57:42.out now. Querrey, who has a nice service with them and a break of
:57:43. > :58:15.serve. -- it's a hold of serve for Murray.
:58:16. > :58:29.It was called good. The chair was in our way. He has used that top-spin
:58:30. > :58:35.very well to chop those balls. Getting the baseline on the
:58:36. > :58:55.sideline. How is this for a service with? Is in it. Yes. The left there
:58:56. > :59:01.is Sam Querrey's partner. That is a monumental service game. I mean,
:59:02. > :59:06.what are you going to do? 160 mph ace to start with and there more of
:59:07. > :59:11.the same. A reminder that Murray hasn't won a six -- a five set match
:59:12. > :59:18.since defeating Sunda at this stage last year. This is a tough time for
:59:19. > :59:24.him. He has an injury that he hasn't wanted to talk about but it has
:59:25. > :59:29.appeared to be present for some weeks now, as Sam Querrey closes in
:59:30. > :59:32.on this famous victory. The last time Querrey played a five setter
:59:33. > :59:39.was here at Wimbledon in the first round last year. He won it 12-10. He
:59:40. > :59:45.played a five setter two days ago. And he played one on Friday that
:59:46. > :59:54.went into Saturday. And in doubles. Before these ones, though. Sam is
:59:55. > :59:58.working big time, because I've never seen him even better. But you do
:59:59. > :00:04.feel good when your opponent feels bad. That is a good point, an
:00:05. > :00:16.important point. It has kept him in it.
:00:17. > :00:25.Querrey has pick it up, so works in reverse, too.
:00:26. > :02:07.Querrey is moving well out there, hustling. Really, taking it too Andy
:02:08. > :02:55.Murray, outstanding last couple of sets.
:02:56. > :03:00.There it is again. Unbelievable hustle.
:03:01. > :03:04.He knows these are virtual match points and he is digging deep.
:03:05. > :03:15.As well he should. Up thank you.
:03:16. > :03:30.-- UMPIRE: Thank you.
:03:31. > :03:46.UMPIRE: Mr Querrey challenges the call. The ball is called in.
:03:47. > :04:34.Certainly for Sam worth looking. Maybe...
:04:35. > :04:37.Oh! UMPIRE: Game Querrey.
:04:38. > :04:57.Wow! And that point doesn't mean we have
:04:58. > :05:03.to say goodbye to Andy Murray. Best point of his life you just watched.
:05:04. > :05:08.Not a man who shows his emotions easily.
:05:09. > :05:12.Best point of his life by far, right there. Wonderful to be here to watch
:05:13. > :05:18.it. UMPIRE: Thank you.
:05:19. > :05:33.On the line. UMPIRE: The ball is called in.
:05:34. > :05:41.UMPIRE: Call stands. Three points away. The biggest victory of his
:05:42. > :05:47.life. Yes, he beat Djokovic here last year n the third round but
:05:48. > :05:52.there were circumstances. Who would have thought he would which the last
:05:53. > :05:56.two sets against the number one player, defending champion, 6-1,
:05:57. > :05:59.6-1, fourth and fifth set. I have to say it again, there is definitely
:06:00. > :06:03.something wrong with Andy Murray, physically. There is no question
:06:04. > :06:09.about that. When you lose the fight, when you
:06:10. > :06:17.are not feeling, that is the first thing, not to compete 100%.
:06:18. > :06:22.And it's away. The defending champion, the the top seed is one
:06:23. > :06:29.point away from relinquishing the title he won last year, with that
:06:30. > :06:30.victory over Milos Raonic. This has been double quick, sets
:06:31. > :07:32.four and five. Game, set match point. That is it.
:07:33. > :07:35.That it should finish on a huge Querrey ace, certainly physically
:07:36. > :07:39.Andy Murray not right, and we will find out more about that, but Sam
:07:40. > :07:47.Querrey, a piece of tennis history for him.
:07:48. > :07:52.This is his 42nd appearance in one of our Grand Slams. And no wonder
:07:53. > :07:58.his coach and his partner are delighted. Nobody has ever had to
:07:59. > :08:02.wait longer to get through to his first Islam semifinal, and it is sat
:08:03. > :08:08.Wimbledon where he has done so well in the past. Of course, the
:08:09. > :08:14.questions will revolved round Andy Murray, how bad is the hip. He has
:08:15. > :08:20.not been walking right. Anticipate he will be taking a firly
:08:21. > :08:25.significant amount of time off at the least, to try to get that thing
:08:26. > :08:32.back on track. Querrey, this is the greatest win of his life.
:08:33. > :08:40.Considering the circumstances. He's, you have to feel amazing for him.
:08:41. > :08:44.If Cilic and Muller get a sniff of this on Court One, they will be very
:08:45. > :08:50.surprised to see the score line in sets three and four. 6-1, 6-1. That
:08:51. > :08:54.is where the questions will be asked about Andy Murray and his fitness.
:08:55. > :08:58.Nobody could have tried harder to have kept that secret or kept his
:08:59. > :09:04.Championship efforts in defence of the Wimbledon he won last year
:09:05. > :09:08.alive. But thaw is it, Andy Murray is still signing autographs to his
:09:09. > :09:14.eternal credit. Sam Querrey makes hiss way back here, he is a
:09:15. > :09:18.semifinalist at Wimbledon, fabulous, a shire man, retiring man, doesn't
:09:19. > :09:23.love the spotlight but his tennis did the talking today. Two hours and
:09:24. > :09:27.42 minutes, perhaps if Andy Murray had taken that two set lead, he was
:09:28. > :09:34.a set and break up, it could have been different. The bottom line is,
:09:35. > :09:38.Murray is out, Querrey is in and he is talking to Leigh. Slayer of
:09:39. > :09:41.Wimbledon champion last year it was Djokovic, this time Andy Murray,
:09:42. > :09:45.what an incredible performance, congratulations. Thank you. I'm
:09:46. > :09:49.still in a bit of shock myself, it was just, you know, the last point I
:09:50. > :09:53.was happy to hit the serve and I am thrilled right now. Andy took the
:09:54. > :09:59.first set in 28 minute, he looks like he was in discomfort but you
:10:00. > :10:04.played incredibly well, what was the difference out there today? You
:10:05. > :10:09.know, I didn't start my best, I kept wit, kept swinging away and found a
:10:10. > :10:15.groove in the fourth and fifth set. Everybody seemed to be falling my
:10:16. > :10:18.way. It is incredible to you you the first American through to the
:10:19. > :10:22.semifinals bah back 2000s 9. How special does it feel? It feels
:10:23. > :10:26.great. Mine, this is is a dream come true, and to be in the semifinals,
:10:27. > :10:30.and to have it at Wimbledon makes it a bit more special. It is important
:10:31. > :10:35.for you to enjoy the moment but not dwell on it too much, because in
:10:36. > :10:38.less than 48 yours you will if your first Grand Slam semifinal, Cilic
:10:39. > :10:43.and Muller are schroging it out. What will prep be for you in the
:10:44. > :10:48.next couple of days before you head into the biggest moment of your
:10:49. > :10:54.tennis career? I will enjoy it longer and have an easy day
:10:55. > :11:00.tomorrow. Well done. Also for the record,
:11:01. > :11:04.amazing that an American man hasn't won a Grand Slam title for 14 years
:11:05. > :11:09.but big Sam is through, and two matches away from taking the title.
:11:10. > :11:14.You wouldn't bet against it after that, wonderful serving from Sam,
:11:15. > :11:18.and that has been the big weapon hes had. Had. You have to feel sorry for
:11:19. > :11:21.Andy Murray, his movement was hampered in the last three sets but
:11:22. > :11:27.Querrey questions, it has been a long wait for him, but he is at last
:11:28. > :11:31.through to the last four. And a big smile on Centre Court, but
:11:32. > :11:37.a big shock here at Wimbledon, as it is Querrey who goes through and
:11:38. > :11:41.Murray is out. And joining me is Tim Henman. When
:11:42. > :11:46.you have a serve like Sam Querrey has on a grass court, you know, you
:11:47. > :11:50.are in with a chance against anyone? Yes, very much so, that has been
:11:51. > :11:55.emphasised by Querrey's performance here over the year, he beat Djokovic
:11:56. > :12:00.last year, we have seen the damage the serving can do with Muller who
:12:01. > :12:03.put out Nadal. That will be an important factor in Querrey's game.
:12:04. > :12:07.You have got to give him credit for the level of tennis that he played
:12:08. > :12:12.but there is is a big question mark over what has been Andy Murray's
:12:13. > :12:16.fitness over the last three or four weeks and today, to see him in so
:12:17. > :12:20.much discomfort, it is one thofz thins where you hope if you have a
:12:21. > :12:24.niggle it might improve as the tournament has gone on but it is
:12:25. > :12:29.evident for everybody to see it has deteriorated and movement is such an
:12:30. > :12:35.important part in his game. You thought he is going well, then there
:12:36. > :12:38.was a dip in form, then it became evident in the third, fourth and
:12:39. > :12:45.fifth sets he couldn't move that well. No, and, the movement is
:12:46. > :12:48.obviously a hinder rans physically but it a distraction mentally.
:12:49. > :12:52.Murray was up a set and break, you think perhaps he can take advantage
:12:53. > :12:58.of this, and get two sets to love up, but you can see lots of the
:12:59. > :13:01.noments today, you, yes, he was hobbling and trying to change
:13:02. > :13:05.direction, pushing off the compression in the hip joint is
:13:06. > :13:11.uncomfortable, and, you know, at this level, at this stage of the
:13:12. > :13:16.tournament, you know you have to be, 100 percent, or very close to it,
:13:17. > :13:21.and that is not the case for Andy, so it is disappointing. As you say,
:13:22. > :13:25.it is that, because you have to push off, that is what you have to do in
:13:26. > :13:30.tennis, a hip injury will affect almost every part of it. The sefrks
:13:31. > :13:34.he was serving like 80mph, 09mph. You can't do that. No, no, and you
:13:35. > :13:40.see the average speeds there, it is is a long way down, and your legs,
:13:41. > :13:44.that is where the major amount of power comes from, it is the
:13:45. > :13:49.foundation you drive up to, without being able to use both legs, the hip
:13:50. > :13:54.connecting your legs and core is so important, and that was an area that
:13:55. > :13:57.obviously Murray was down significantly, and, yes, as it is a
:13:58. > :14:03.physical issue it becomes a distraction, up a set and an you
:14:04. > :14:08.think can he get up? That didn't materialise, a break in the third
:14:09. > :14:12.set, that went to the tie-break, even though Querrey was down two
:14:13. > :14:17.sets to one you felt he had the energy to keep making Murray work,
:14:18. > :14:22.and rushes through the fourth is it 6-1. That will boost his confidence.
:14:23. > :14:26.With Murray's movement, the writing was on the wall. Querrey, you know,
:14:27. > :14:30.he was very much aware of what was happening down the other end. He was
:14:31. > :14:33.going to capitalise on it. He was going to move it, and attack the
:14:34. > :14:40.serve s they were sitting up. That is is right. I think he did a good
:14:41. > :14:43.job on second of move forking Ward. That was another great angle.
:14:44. > :14:47.Sometimes when you are playing an opponent that is a bit injured it
:14:48. > :14:52.can become a distraction for you, but I think Querrey was very clear
:14:53. > :14:56.in his game plan, he wanted to be offensive, mainly behind the serve.
:14:57. > :15:00.Hen he got short balls on the Murray serve he was looking to step in. The
:15:01. > :15:05.more you can take your time away from an opponent that is not moving
:15:06. > :15:10.so well the better it will be. You see how laboured that is from
:15:11. > :15:14.Murray, he is normally good at using his skills to get the ball back in
:15:15. > :15:17.play. You can't run it will be difficult. It is not easy to
:15:18. > :15:22.maintain your focus and concentration but a cow have to
:15:23. > :15:25.think should I change my game plan, should I start drop shot, but he
:15:26. > :15:29.kept with his plan of hitting the big shot. You are right. That is
:15:30. > :15:34.where experience comes into it. Querrey has opinion on the tour many
:15:35. > :15:39.time, he has had big win, this is the biggest on the biggest stage,
:15:40. > :15:43.and you know, he did a very good job in staying focussed on his own game,
:15:44. > :15:47.he knew that the aggression and taking time away from Murray was the
:15:48. > :15:52.right way to play, whether he was injured or not, but with Murray a
:15:53. > :15:56.step or two steps slow, your gaps get bigger from the back of court.
:15:57. > :16:01.You can move him one way or another, or go behind and that was going to
:16:02. > :16:05.pay off for him. It is a new look Querrey, because we have talked so
:16:06. > :16:10.much about the big serve, that is the big weapon but he has more than
:16:11. > :16:14.that. Yes, definitely. He is capable of playing on any surface because of
:16:15. > :16:19.the opportunities, the serve sets up, but... He loves the serve
:16:20. > :16:24.forehand combo. He is not the only one that likes to bang the big serve
:16:25. > :16:30.and get forehand into play. He moves well. He can use the slice. He
:16:31. > :16:35.stayed in the rally to wait for his opportunity, and, certainly when he
:16:36. > :16:40.got them with the fourth and fifth sets to win, that is impressive. And
:16:41. > :16:44.also the fact, as we see there, what a point as John said, this is the
:16:45. > :16:51.point of his life, because there was no coming back for Murray from that.
:16:52. > :16:57.Even Andy's box knew it as well that was key. It S it is break point for
:16:58. > :17:01.a double break in the fifth, and you know, often with Querrey's serve, a
:17:02. > :17:04.single break will be enough, but up 5-1 even in a Wimbledon
:17:05. > :17:09.quarterfinal, you felt like that was going to be a final nail in the
:17:10. > :17:13.coffin. As far as Querrey go, playing five set, this is the third
:17:14. > :17:20.five setter in a row, so any doubts about his fitness gone. Very much
:17:21. > :17:24.so. This is, we have had that blip with the long match with Nadal and
:17:25. > :17:29.Muller and knock on effect of Djokovic, but that is where Querrey
:17:30. > :17:32.has been fortunate with day on, day off and he has had long matches but
:17:33. > :17:37.he will get his day off tomorrow to make sure he has the chance to have
:17:38. > :17:42.an easy day to rest and recuperate and come back for a big day on
:17:43. > :17:46.Friday. It was horrible to see Andy struggling so much. You feel for
:17:47. > :17:50.him. We have all played with injuries and we know how bad it is.
:17:51. > :17:55.Sometimes completing the match was good. He could have thrown in the
:17:56. > :17:59.towel earlier I think he knew the writing was on the wall. You can see
:18:00. > :18:04.there there is no real chance for him to chase down the balls we have
:18:05. > :18:07.seen him do for so long, and again given the circumstances with the
:18:08. > :18:10.schedule they play, there are going to be tournament where you are
:18:11. > :18:15.injured and you will have to pull out, but as the defending champion
:18:16. > :18:18.and home-grown player at Wimbledon, the biggest tournament of the year
:18:19. > :18:26.to go out in these circumstances is disappointing. There lot of people
:18:27. > :18:30.say why didn't he take an injury time out, he could have had the
:18:31. > :18:35.trainer on during change of ends but the hip is an injury you can't
:18:36. > :18:39.treat. I don't think there is a great deal you could do, especially
:18:40. > :18:44.if you have been treating it for so long, the week before he had three
:18:45. > :18:51.days without practise, think he had an injection then to try and settle
:18:52. > :18:55.it. It is over a two week vent, sometimes injuries can improve and
:18:56. > :19:00.you might sort of run them off if you like, but this one has
:19:01. > :19:04.deteriorated unfortunately, and, you know, the last two sets we have seen
:19:05. > :19:09.how much it hampered his game. I have never had a hip injury but I
:19:10. > :19:13.think this will be a long time out. They will need to find out what is
:19:14. > :19:18.wrong with it. Playing the last five matches or so. Hopefully he hasn't
:19:19. > :19:23.done long-term damage but he needs a few weeks off now. It has been a
:19:24. > :19:28.torrid year, world number one at the end of last year, so much to
:19:29. > :19:34.celebrate. Went to his training camp. Then shingles in February, an
:19:35. > :19:39.illness in April. Other injuries, it hasn't had a chance to string
:19:40. > :19:43.matches together. Add not only that, but to give him the foundation from
:19:44. > :19:48.the practice court and gym, because as you say an incredible finish last
:19:49. > :19:54.year, but really perhaps didn't have enough time to rest and recuperate
:19:55. > :20:02.to give his body a chance to recover before his training block in Miami.
:20:03. > :20:08.We know how hard he pushes himself. In hindsight, he was in the final at
:20:09. > :20:12.Doha, then straight back on treadmill. He played the Australian
:20:13. > :20:15.Open with shingles, that is when the rash came out and still he probably
:20:16. > :20:22.didn't give his body enough time to recover. He has always been playing
:20:23. > :20:25.catch up. In the French Open he was ill the week before but still found
:20:26. > :20:29.way to get to the semifinals and likewise he has had problems the
:20:30. > :20:35.week before, lost at Queen, it has been difficult for him. In hindsight
:20:36. > :20:40.when Croy look back at last year, because he entered every tournament
:20:41. > :20:44.to try and finish at number one, may be if he had paced himself and been
:20:45. > :20:53.number one in February, he wanted it. To get the number one, to finish
:20:54. > :20:57.the year is a Monday yuesmt Article 50 achieve. He could have taken more
:20:58. > :21:02.time off to say I'm not going to play an exhibition, I will probably
:21:03. > :21:07.go straight to Australia to give myself more time. He is such awe
:21:08. > :21:12.competitor, he is playing some the best tennis of his life. She
:21:13. > :21:17.probably thinking. Co-on Melbourne, I will win another Islam. It is
:21:18. > :21:22.probably time to sit down with his team, his medical team and you know,
:21:23. > :21:29.plan out the next couple of months leading up to the US Open. That is
:21:30. > :21:33.what he has to get his body right before he can start. He has to
:21:34. > :21:37.rebuild. Confidence wise, he will be done. Again, you get to number one
:21:38. > :21:42.in the world, there is only one place to go, that is down. He still
:21:43. > :21:46.played some great tennis and he has lots to play for for the rest of the
:21:47. > :21:52.year. Hard court is is a great surface, he has won the US Open. You
:21:53. > :21:56.would like to think he will qualify for the World Tour Finals. He has to
:21:57. > :22:01.get healthy. That is the most important thing, there is plenty of
:22:02. > :22:05.good tennis ahead of him. He has won a lot of great matches but he
:22:06. > :22:09.expected a lot of himself and he go along with the ride. It will be
:22:10. > :22:14.tough for Andy Murray, that is the big shock. He is oud. Roger Federer
:22:15. > :22:20.will be walking on Centre Court for his quarterfinal match against Milos
:22:21. > :22:23.Raonic, and I am sure the big talking round is what a surprise
:22:24. > :22:29.that was that Andy Murray is out, and a huge disappointment for the
:22:30. > :22:34.home fans as well. But over on BBC Two at the moment, it is Gilles
:22:35. > :22:39.Muller against Marin Cilic. Muller has broken. This look like this is
:22:40. > :22:45.going to go into a fifth set. Set. I don't know where he gets the energy
:22:46. > :22:51.from. He is heading into a fifth set against Marin Cilic. The winner of
:22:52. > :22:57.that one will be facing Sam Querrey in the semifinal. Well, what a story
:22:58. > :23:00.here, so that means that now Jo Konta is the only Briton left in the
:23:01. > :23:04.Championship. That will add to the pressure and expectation on her
:23:05. > :23:07.young shoulder, we will take you back to yesterday and hear from Jo
:23:08. > :23:13.about her amazing victory in the quarterfinals.
:23:14. > :23:18.It's a very special day for Johanna Konta.
:23:19. > :23:24.It is extra special for British tennis fan, they have waited 33
:23:25. > :23:30.years to be able to say one of their own is in the quarterfinals.
:23:31. > :23:39.Whenever you engage in one of these Titanic tussle, you seem to have the
:23:40. > :23:44.belief. Wow. Her trademark. My trust in my own ability has got
:23:45. > :23:49.to be there. The situation at moments like this,
:23:50. > :23:54.it is more from experience than necessarily what I believe I can or
:23:55. > :24:00.cannot do. I have always believed in my own ability. I have needed to
:24:01. > :24:06.accumulate experiences and time. That is a magnificent tie-break from
:24:07. > :24:11.Halep. Konta has to come from behind the win I go into every Championship
:24:12. > :24:18.to be involved in the event till the very end.
:24:19. > :24:22.But, I am fully aware that every match I will get to play will be a
:24:23. > :24:29.testing one and will challenge me. Most standing. Look at that.
:24:30. > :24:35.Somehow, Johanna Konta has forced a final set. I don't take anything for
:24:36. > :24:39.granted and I demand of myself my best effort and my full commitment
:24:40. > :24:40.to what I do, and to make sure I prepare well and I do the best I can
:24:41. > :25:06.out there. British tennis history the made. You
:25:07. > :25:09.are the first British woman since 1978 to #r50e68 reach the semifinals
:25:10. > :25:14.at women don and winning that match means you will be in the top five of
:25:15. > :25:17.the women's rankings when they are out next week. I didn't know about
:25:18. > :25:20.that. OK.
:25:21. > :25:26.Thank you. Congratulations. Thank you. When you tot up these
:25:27. > :25:29.achievements do you pat yourself will be in the top five of the
:25:30. > :25:30.women's rankings when they are out next week. I didn't know about that.
:25:31. > :25:32.OK. Thank you. Congratulations. Thank
:25:33. > :25:35.you. When you tot up these achievements do you pat yourself on
:25:36. > :25:39.the back and go "Well done"? It is difficult, because I guess, in both
:25:40. > :25:46.in the position we are in tennis, things move quickly, before you know
:25:47. > :25:52.it it is already an ex event next week, because things are so
:25:53. > :25:55.fast-moving, it is almost an art to reflect well, and to acknowledge the
:25:56. > :25:59.good things you do, and that is something I work on to make sure I
:26:00. > :26:04.acknowledge the good things I am doing, but I'll let you know after
:26:05. > :26:12.Wimbledon how my pat on back went, OK?
:26:13. > :26:17.She has remained focussed. Hasn't got carried away with the hype No,
:26:18. > :26:20.you hear her speak and being told she will be top five in the world. I
:26:21. > :26:24.am sure she is trying to stay in the moment of what she is doing because
:26:25. > :26:29.her performances have been fantastic, I think the match she
:26:30. > :26:33.played on Centre Court against Vic kick when she won 10-8 in the third
:26:34. > :26:38.was such good quality tennis, that is the foundation for her moving
:26:39. > :26:41.forward. She has a great opportunity against Venus, and I think she has
:26:42. > :26:45.done very well to sort of use the crowd, but remain focussed. She
:26:46. > :26:55.hasn't been distracted. That is very important when you are playing at
:26:56. > :27:01.hope. Halep moves so well, she runs everything down. Jo had to stay
:27:02. > :27:05.positive in going for her Shotts. In the most CIDical moment, it went to
:27:06. > :27:10.the second set tie-break, that is do or die, she was clear, she hits well
:27:11. > :27:14.on her receive s when she gets the chance to dominate from back to
:27:15. > :27:19.court she goes for the shots and that is it in her game and she
:27:20. > :27:23.continues to do that, you know, time and time again, irrespective of the
:27:24. > :27:27.score, she talks about process not outcome, and that is absolutely
:27:28. > :27:32.right, and, yes, for sure, believe that she can keep on winning.
:27:33. > :27:35.Scheeps improving every year, she adds something all the time. There
:27:36. > :27:40.is such a a weakness, that is gone there is no weakness in her game
:27:41. > :27:45.now. No, she moves well, we talked about the serve and the ground
:27:46. > :27:50.stroke, she has a good understanding of the game, when to go up the line,
:27:51. > :27:54.from her point of view, she know how good she can be, she is raising the
:27:55. > :27:58.bar, she is challenging herself, when you reflect over the last
:27:59. > :28:04.couple of years she was outside 150, and then, just continued to improve.
:28:05. > :28:07.That is great for her, but it is up is an important role model for the
:28:08. > :28:11.younger generation, she can see what the hard work has been able to
:28:12. > :28:16.achieve for her. And what really impresses thin who has played in
:28:17. > :28:21.game, is how you play the big point, how well you play them, and he
:28:22. > :28:25.showed no sign of nerves when it got to the end. No, it would have been
:28:26. > :28:29.easier for her to instead of playing each point as it comes to start
:28:30. > :28:34.thinking about the score board when she was getting closer to victory,
:28:35. > :28:39.when she starts hitting the spots on serve because she has plenty of
:28:40. > :28:45.power, she is going to be tough for anyone to beat. And just looking at
:28:46. > :28:49.her playing Hal, but it will be a different sort of match against
:28:50. > :28:54.Venus, you couldn't get more different players. Venus has the
:28:55. > :28:58.weapons to hurt Jo. As I have said many times before on grass it is the
:28:59. > :29:03.toughest surface to defend on, you want to be the one being offensive
:29:04. > :29:09.so we have to look to see who gets on the 06 fence earlier in the
:29:10. > :29:14.rally, Venus has a great serve, she can dictate from the back of court.
:29:15. > :29:19.That is what Jo will try to do. How can you exploit the weaknesses?
:29:20. > :29:22.Against Venus hit behind her, try to get her change direction, any second
:29:23. > :29:26.serve opportunities look to be aggressive and you probably will be
:29:27. > :29:30.saying the same from the other end of the court. Every player says it
:29:31. > :29:34.will take it one match at a time. This is is a Wimbledon semifinal. I
:29:35. > :29:39.don't know if you remember your first one, you can't ignore it is a
:29:40. > :29:44.huge occasion. It is, but it is one to imbraes I think because... Easier
:29:45. > :29:49.said than done. It is, but I think the lead up in this tournament,
:29:50. > :29:52.obviously, she played on the show courts in the first week, she had a
:29:53. > :29:59.great match on Centre Court, the memory of being there and playing so
:30:00. > :30:04.well, beating Halep in two hours 40 minute, she will be raring to go,
:30:05. > :30:06.but to be fair, you know Venus knows her way round that court well as
:30:07. > :30:16.well. She has a certain presence, she has
:30:17. > :30:21.the presence of the champion? I think she is representing her
:30:22. > :30:25.family, she thinks, Serena Williams has been dominating for many years
:30:26. > :30:35.and she is not here, it is over to Venus. Is she 37? 37! Amazing just
:30:36. > :30:42.how the veterans, men and women, are playing. Your friend, Roger Federer,
:30:43. > :30:46.is about to step onto Centre Court, we talk about Venus Williams knowing
:30:47. > :30:53.this court! Roger probably knows it better than anyone. Always relaxed
:30:54. > :30:58.and cool. This is a repeat of last year 's semifinal, and he lost to
:30:59. > :31:01.Milos Raonic. As we have said, this is a very different Roger Federer
:31:02. > :31:12.this year. And what a cheer for the great man.
:31:13. > :31:19.So, Roger is on the court and we will continue the build-up to this
:31:20. > :31:24.match, we are going to Centre Court but this has also been happening on
:31:25. > :31:30.Court One. This is over on BBC Two at the moment. Gilles Muller was
:31:31. > :31:35.coming out to serve for the set, the fourth set, and he has taken that.
:31:36. > :31:39.He has got a heck of a left-handed serve! That is going the distance,
:31:40. > :31:46.against Marin Cilic, that is overrun BBC Two. But left-handed serve, it
:31:47. > :31:52.swings as much as any left-hander I have seen! And what is impressive is
:31:53. > :31:56.how well Muller is hitting the spots, he is really finding the
:31:57. > :32:01.corners, hitting the angles and against Marin Cilic, he has a very
:32:02. > :32:05.long reach, he is getting him wide to force them to take one of his
:32:06. > :32:11.hands off the racquet and that match is for anyone, two sets each. It
:32:12. > :32:17.will be interesting to know if the score from the Andy Murray match has
:32:18. > :32:20.been on? It will have been. They will be other than that and that
:32:21. > :32:24.will add to the pressure, knowing that Sam Querrey is three for the
:32:25. > :32:29.winner to play in the semifinals. There is a huge opportunity for
:32:30. > :32:32.someone. This is a Wimbledon quarterfinal! Many are hitting the
:32:33. > :32:39.ball as well as he is and with such confidence, this is fun? It
:32:40. > :32:48.certainly is and this is his 50th Grand Slam quarterfinal. And his
:32:49. > :32:54.100th Wimbledon match. A lot of people do not play 100 Grand Slam
:32:55. > :32:58.matches! Be interesting when you reflect on 12 months ago, he was
:32:59. > :33:03.struggling with his knee and that was going to keep him out for the
:33:04. > :33:07.rest of the year. He is fit and playing some of the best tennis I
:33:08. > :33:12.have seen. But with the server that Raonic has, he can really cause
:33:13. > :33:18.problems so the first set could be important for both. With Rafa Nadal
:33:19. > :33:23.and with Andy Murray, we have seen the big servers can cause the big
:33:24. > :33:32.upsets. Lee McKenzie caught up with last year 's finalists, talking
:33:33. > :33:42.about that five set thriller. Andy Murray! He defeats Raonic. What was
:33:43. > :33:46.the overriding emotion? The frustration stuck with me, for the
:33:47. > :33:48.first few months, until I had a chance to review everything at the
:33:49. > :33:54.end of the year when my tennis slowed down and then I was able to
:33:55. > :33:59.turn this into a very positive emotion. It is a clear fact that it
:34:00. > :34:04.has been the best moment I have had on a tennis court, a lot of things I
:34:05. > :34:08.did not have before the final, it helped me develop. Next up is Roger
:34:09. > :34:14.Federer, you will have fond memories of last year when he became? It was
:34:15. > :34:27.a great match for me. -- when you beat him. Roger Federer falls,
:34:28. > :34:31.knocked out by Milos Raonic. Being present and sharp, every single
:34:32. > :34:36.point, having to play some of my best tennis, to just have a chance.
:34:37. > :34:42.Are you happy with where you are? Isn't all about getting to world
:34:43. > :34:48.number one? But not necessarily say I am happy, just because I want to
:34:49. > :34:52.achieve things, I want to get to certain standards and certain
:34:53. > :34:55.pinnacles and points. This is a fantastic tournament but you never
:34:56. > :34:59.really get to truly appreciate it until you step away from it, until
:35:00. > :35:04.it is over because everything gets caught up in the moment and when you
:35:05. > :35:09.start appreciating things too much or think too far ahead, that is a
:35:10. > :35:13.danger. You want to be in a sense of fight or flight and you want to be
:35:14. > :35:21.able to be in this difficult situations and get the best out of
:35:22. > :35:24.yourself. He really made a breakthrough, Milos Raonic, last
:35:25. > :35:29.year but since then he has had a number of injuries and he only
:35:30. > :35:33.reached two finals since. You thought he would propel himself up
:35:34. > :35:37.the rankings? He lost, Andy Murray was the only man to beat him in the
:35:38. > :35:43.Queen 's final and the final at Wimbledon and you are looking for
:35:44. > :35:47.Raonic to kick on from that but it has not happened as quickly as you
:35:48. > :35:51.might have expected but getting back onto the grass at Wimbledon, he has
:35:52. > :35:57.found his form again. He lost the first round at Queen's, that was not
:35:58. > :36:01.the ideal preparation but he is putting himself in contention and
:36:02. > :36:07.this is a match that a lot of people have been looking forward to. Coming
:36:08. > :36:11.through in five sets against Zverev. He has spent two hours and 45
:36:12. > :36:18.minutes on court, Roger Federer five hours and 45 minutes. Racing through
:36:19. > :36:24.the draw! You don't get paid for overtime! Conserving his energy.
:36:25. > :36:29.Last year we could see shots in that piece, in some ways Roger made that
:36:30. > :36:34.decision of having to take his time out, he never talks about injuries
:36:35. > :36:37.but he was not fit? He was struggling with his knee and the
:36:38. > :36:41.knock-on effect of the surgery was he was unable to do the training he
:36:42. > :36:46.could do for his legs and last year he looked like he had lost weight in
:36:47. > :36:51.his legs, he did not have the same definition and strength and having
:36:52. > :36:54.handles six months off, that gave him the chance to build up the
:36:55. > :36:59.strength to support that knee. And the way he has played this year and
:37:00. > :37:04.how aggressively has been, it has been incredible to watch and a 35,
:37:05. > :37:10.you are asking if he is playing the best of his career! Hard to argue
:37:11. > :37:13.that. People thought when he went out at the semifinals, we would
:37:14. > :37:17.never see him again but he comes back bigger and stronger than ever.
:37:18. > :37:22.The most incredible year when you think about the matches he has one.
:37:23. > :37:27.It defies logic, when you take a big time away from the tour, it normally
:37:28. > :37:31.takes a long time to get back into the rhythm of tournament and
:37:32. > :37:37.matchplay but he has hit the ground running in Melbourne and to get
:37:38. > :37:42.through to the final and be 3-1 down in the fifth, against Rafa Nadal,
:37:43. > :37:47.who has beaten him in so many Grand Slam finals, and then when his 18th
:37:48. > :37:53.major and back that up in Indian Wells and Miami, incredible to
:37:54. > :37:55.watch. He is being more aggressive, he looks like he is trying to move
:37:56. > :38:01.up the court and be even more aggressive than in the past?
:38:02. > :38:05.Certainly on the backhand side he has been incredibly aggressive off
:38:06. > :38:10.the forehand but his backhand, he is taking things earlier and attacking
:38:11. > :38:15.from that wing as well. The reality, at 35, nearly 36, if there is one
:38:16. > :38:20.area that will not be getting better is his speed of movement so he might
:38:21. > :38:24.as well be aggressive so your opponent cannot get you to run so
:38:25. > :38:29.much. That is the double positive, less running and more aggression.
:38:30. > :38:36.Talking of running, where do you have to be right now? In the
:38:37. > :38:41.commentary box alongside Boris and Mark Petchey. I hope you have got
:38:42. > :38:47.your trainers on! Off you go! The quarterfinal, Raonic against
:38:48. > :38:53.Federer, and Tim is off to join Mark Petchey and Boris Becker.
:38:54. > :39:02.If there is one player here that can lift the Centre Court crowd who was
:39:03. > :39:07.not British after a disappointing loss for a British player, it is
:39:08. > :39:12.Roger Federer. Plenty of anticipation as he steps onto the
:39:13. > :39:15.special Court, contesting his 100th match here at Wimbledon against the
:39:16. > :39:28.man he lost to last year in the semifinals. New balls are needed, I
:39:29. > :39:34.think. Well, just one of them. That would help in a tennis match! Raonic
:39:35. > :39:42.getting the new one after that five minute round-up! They more not
:39:43. > :39:54.missed an opportunity, either of these, to get that age. -- H.
:39:55. > :40:01.Interesting. He has really gone away from the bodies serve at Wimbledon
:40:02. > :40:39.this year, since he stopped working with Carlos. Straight into the body.
:40:40. > :40:54.140 mph. Third serve. Of the match. It did warm up properly. The fastest
:40:55. > :41:10.of the tournament so far is 142 from Raonic.
:41:11. > :41:32.Last year in the semifinal against Federer, he delivered one at 146
:41:33. > :41:38.mph, and went quicker at 147 against Andy Murray in the final. But he
:41:39. > :41:39.lost the point. It is not just about speed, it is about placement as
:41:40. > :42:30.well. You don't get that any opportunities
:42:31. > :42:35.and that is a pretty good one, early on, from Raonic. It took Federer a
:42:36. > :43:25.little bit but finally winning his first point.
:43:26. > :43:52.This is a big call from Hawk-Eye. What else do you expect? Perfection.
:43:53. > :43:59.A little test early on from Federer and he comes through with flying
:44:00. > :44:03.colours. Very much so, the other day he lost his first service game and
:44:04. > :44:09.was asked afterwards what happened and he admitted he was nervous. Even
:44:10. > :44:32.the great ones get a little bit nervous at the beginning.
:44:33. > :44:46.That is going to be the key. For Federer to win. To handle Raonic,
:44:47. > :45:09.the second serve. The first one is like going to the casino.
:45:10. > :45:18.There was a little more pace on the second serve and the first couple he
:45:19. > :45:22.threw him out 101, 100 and three, he is looking for plenty of variety
:45:23. > :45:24.here. And of course he is not shy on his second serve, to get that into
:45:25. > :45:51.the 130s. That is right game plan for Raonic,
:45:52. > :46:03.to keep the rally is short and attack on every possibility but
:46:04. > :46:27.beware, the returns will come. -- the rallies.
:46:28. > :46:35.When he hits that approach shot he has to move into the middle and
:46:36. > :46:38.Federer a couple of times went behind the tall Canadian, who is
:46:39. > :46:45.unable to make that move to the forehand side. Smart passing. But
:46:46. > :47:04.not a good enough approach shot. Or were attacking. -- poor.
:47:05. > :47:23.His first point went wide in the semifinals, if he has a second, last
:47:24. > :47:24.year he went exclusively with the kick serve into the Roger Federer
:47:25. > :47:55.backhand. Federer had a chance of returning
:47:56. > :48:11.the first serve. Into the rally. But Raonic penetrated a bit too much.
:48:12. > :48:14.The first potential serve and volley point from Raonic, he missed the
:48:15. > :48:42.first serve. You said it, he is not shying away
:48:43. > :48:56.from hitting the second serve pretty hard. Roger was able to read it.
:48:57. > :49:10.That was too good. Another 138 mph bullet from Raonic. It came back.
:49:11. > :49:15.The Raonic forehand mopping things up. His serve has been interesting
:49:16. > :49:21.in these championships, working with Carlos Moya, who finished work with
:49:22. > :49:26.Rafa Nadal, if we look at serving last year in 2016, we could see a
:49:27. > :49:31.little bit of this from Rafa Nadal in terms of the body serve, he went
:49:32. > :49:36.with a lot more than we will see this year, he went outside to the
:49:37. > :49:42.forehand a lot but if we look at 2017, he has virtually not gone with
:49:43. > :49:45.that body serve at all this year. Any specific reason you can tell
:49:46. > :49:52.from that? He started the match with the body serve on Roger Federer, on
:49:53. > :49:55.grass that is an excellent choice, I'd do not know why he would not
:49:56. > :49:58.play that before and hopefully he will change his strategy today
:49:59. > :50:05.because that is an important part of the service strategy. He stopped
:50:06. > :50:12.working with Krajicek before the championship so actually, I do not
:50:13. > :50:22.know with coaches right now? Who is his official coach? Knowles is here.
:50:23. > :50:28.The three times champion. He doesn't have his super coach.
:50:29. > :50:48.If he wins Wimbledon, Mark Knowles will become a super coach!
:50:49. > :50:59.Just catching the back edge. Tim, did you get lost? I think I did 30
:51:00. > :51:10.minutes with Sue Barker. I just had to recover! I am glad to be here
:51:11. > :51:48.alongside new boys for this. -- alongside you boys.
:51:49. > :51:52.That was the only way he was going to win this point. And he will take
:51:53. > :52:08.it. That is a lovely view of what goes
:52:09. > :52:20.on on the surface of the court. The wide surface -- serve, exploited
:52:21. > :52:27.perfectly by Federer. It took him a couple of minutes to really get into
:52:28. > :52:33.that match. I think he is now increasing his intensity. That fly
:52:34. > :53:06.was bothering him. We saw another body serve from
:53:07. > :53:33.Raonic. He had to run a long way after that
:53:34. > :53:38.shot, we had a look at that earlier in the tournament, there is an 11
:53:39. > :53:41.metre differential between his forehand side and the ones that he
:53:42. > :54:08.has run around on his backhand to hit it with the first shot.
:54:09. > :54:15.That is a bad mess from Raonic but very good athletic ability from
:54:16. > :54:36.Federer to get the ball back and play. -- bad mess.
:54:37. > :54:46.Was that a small chance? Of returning the serve again? After
:54:47. > :54:51.missing the forehand he felt Raonic was safe with that backhand down the
:54:52. > :55:07.line and Federer would have fancied his chances of making that pass.
:55:08. > :55:17.That was a serve and volley from a natural rally, he does not like to
:55:18. > :55:18.hit them down into the shoelaces. This gives Federer another break
:55:19. > :55:47.point. He has made it! Terrific run. And
:55:48. > :55:50.perhaps Raonic overcommitted himself to the backhand corner and could not
:55:51. > :56:00.get his big frame out of the way and that is a big blow early on for the
:56:01. > :56:04.Canadian. I think the body-line tactic on the serve is interesting
:56:05. > :56:08.but also on the passing shots, when Federer played one of his earlier
:56:09. > :56:13.matches, it was against Zverev, looking to go down the middle and
:56:14. > :56:17.this is another example, straight at the body. And for the big man it is
:56:18. > :56:23.sometimes easier to dive one way or the other rather than get your body
:56:24. > :56:30.out of the way. It was either a winner or an easily put away shot
:56:31. > :56:37.and you are right, that is one of the weaknesses of Raonic, his
:56:38. > :56:41.mobility, his movement. Well, that was a good volley from Raonic but
:56:42. > :56:45.not a great one. And that is what top players do, they extract
:56:46. > :56:54.perfection from you on every single shot. And he was punished heavily by
:56:55. > :56:59.not putting it away. And the criticism of Raonic is always, why
:57:00. > :57:09.don't you come in more? Because he is not comfortable at the minute, he
:57:10. > :57:39.likes to have the target. And Federer will exploit that.
:57:40. > :57:49.If you are wondering who the winner was between Miller and Cilic, Cilic
:57:50. > :58:04.was the winner, in the fifth set. -- Muller.
:58:05. > :58:13.Safe to say you would have pretty long odds on having Cilic against
:58:14. > :58:24.Querrey in the semifinals in the top half of the draw.
:58:25. > :58:32.That is the beauty of live sport, we watch this, even though Federer is
:58:33. > :58:37.the favourite to win this match, you are never sure, like last year, he
:58:38. > :58:44.looked in pole position and Raonic found a way to wrestle a couple of
:58:45. > :58:47.sets in a role off Federer. One of those players he can take the
:58:48. > :00:34.racquet out of the hands of the top players, with that type of delivery.
:00:35. > :00:51.Cheeps himself close in this opening set, Raonic.
:00:52. > :00:58.We talk about Raonic's serve and Federer in so many different way,
:00:59. > :01:03.but one of the shots perhapsings that it was not talking about
:01:04. > :01:10.enough, is his backhand slice at time, it is almost his Camille I
:01:11. > :01:15.don't know shot, it fits in with his surround, if you look the way he can
:01:16. > :01:21.defend, bring you in on that slice backhand, it is something that
:01:22. > :01:25.forces opponents to get down low, that racket up above the ball chips
:01:26. > :01:29.it down and he has used it a lot here on the grass courts at
:01:30. > :01:39.Wimbledon, compared to how he started the year on the grass
:01:40. > :01:43.courts. 71% of on that stunning run he had
:01:44. > :01:48.in Australia through to Indian Wells and Miami, just 50% of the time as
:01:49. > :01:53.he hit over his backhand on the grass, so again, it's the shot he
:01:54. > :02:01.plays with equal measure here on the grass courts. Ken? He had one of the
:02:02. > :02:20.best backhand slice ever. UMPIRE: The ball is called in.
:02:21. > :02:23.It takes away the power, takes away the rhythm from the opposition and
:02:24. > :02:51.slow downs the pace. Kim of coursing, four time runner-up
:02:52. > :02:54.here, but Federer looking to become the second oldest man to reach the
:02:55. > :03:01.last four year, after Ken Rosewall who managed it back in 1974 aged 39.
:03:02. > :03:07.What a phenomenal achievement that is.
:03:08. > :03:19.The greatest player ever not to win Wimbledon.
:03:20. > :03:34.That is what a natural valuier does. He plays with... People ask whether
:03:35. > :03:39.you can learn that and practise that? No, you can't.
:03:40. > :03:48.UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Just three points taken off the
:03:49. > :04:09.Federer serve. Just three points taken off the
:04:10. > :04:11.Federer serve. Rod flavour, doesn't need
:04:12. > :04:14.introduction, it is grey to see him round at so many tournaments now.
:04:15. > :04:36.He has done it all. -- Laver. Laver, doesn't need introduction, it
:04:37. > :04:38.is grey to see him round at so many tournaments now.
:04:39. > :04:41.He has done it all. -- Laver. Raonic likes to have a big serve and
:04:42. > :04:59.attack with the second shot instead of serving volleying.
:05:00. > :05:06.Sometimes when his serve is so fast it doesn't give him that much time
:05:07. > :05:08.to get to the net, he coming in behind the second shot, he can gain
:05:09. > :05:44.a better court position. He will have to be careful with that
:05:45. > :05:49.backhand down the line, he doesn't want to hit many of those, the
:05:50. > :05:51.moment Roger runs over there and has this ball on his racket, he can
:05:52. > :06:15.produce magic. He has more time to come in. Like to
:06:16. > :06:17.see him do that a lot more often. Mark Knowles there in the middle,
:06:18. > :06:45.many this grey cap. APPLAUSE
:06:46. > :06:51.I thought for a moment after Federer's passing shot, if he had
:06:52. > :06:54.got this in an awkward position it could have been coming back at him
:06:55. > :06:56.pretty rapidly. When it comes at you that quickly it will keep you
:06:57. > :07:19.further back from the net. It is not often that Raonic serves
:07:20. > :07:40.this well and is sill down a break. 75% of first serves in.
:07:41. > :07:50.Only two aces. That high first percentage, such a
:07:51. > :08:07.big server, Federer seems to read the Raonic serve pretty well so far.
:08:08. > :08:17.UMPIRE: Federer leads 5-4, first set.
:08:18. > :08:22.Boris, he has the at van tackle he doesn't have huge grip change, he is
:08:23. > :08:27.not coming to his backhand side the the adjustment he can make is
:08:28. > :08:31.swifter than some of other players. Absolutely he doesn't have the huge
:08:32. > :08:43.western grip an backhand as well, so with one grip he can play either
:08:44. > :08:45.side, he can block it. Dvantage he doesn't have huge grip
:08:46. > :08:48.change, he is not coming to his backhand side the the adjustment he
:08:49. > :08:50.can make is swifter than some of other players. Absolutely he doesn't
:08:51. > :08:53.have the huge western grip an backhand as well, so with one grip
:08:54. > :08:55.he can play either side, he can block it.
:08:56. > :08:56.Sir Ian McKellen taking a closer look at both players during the
:08:57. > :08:59.change over there. And Dame Maggie Smith who has been
:09:00. > :09:10.in so many wonderful movies, over the years, too numerous to mention,
:09:11. > :09:15.and, a pleasure to see her in the best exotic marigold hotel, the last
:09:16. > :09:19.one I saw with her in it. Federer's best at the moment,
:09:20. > :10:23.slightly better than Raonic's and he serves for the first set.
:10:24. > :10:36.UMPIRE: Right baseline, the ball is called out.
:10:37. > :11:07.That is the skill land it there but it also takes a lot of courage to
:11:08. > :11:13.take it into an opponent's strength. Two set points.
:11:14. > :11:17.One needed. The fifth ace of the set and Federer
:11:18. > :11:35.wraps it up, 6-4. Serving clinic when row look at the
:11:36. > :11:39.stat for Federer. Federer. 71% of first serves finding their mark and
:11:40. > :11:47.only losing three points. One behind the first serve.
:11:48. > :11:53.Certainly a God way to put pressure on your point's serve when you hold
:11:54. > :12:04.serve as consistently as Federer has done. It is interesting where Raonic
:12:05. > :12:08.only won 65% of his first serves. That's a warning statistic, that is
:12:09. > :12:12.where he is going to get his points. It is probably worrying for Raonic
:12:13. > :12:17.he got 70% of his first serves in and still lost the set.
:12:18. > :12:31.So what is the game plan here for Raonic? A bit of score board
:12:32. > :12:36.pressure, he has to make sure he holds on to his sever, he is serving
:12:37. > :12:41.first in the second set and needs to built Mohammed tum. He lost his
:12:42. > :13:21.serve in the first set, and there is no better front runner than Federer.
:13:22. > :13:31.I wonder whether this lack of serves into the body just allows Federer to
:13:32. > :13:35.know there is only two options he has to guard against and not a third
:13:36. > :13:40.one on both sides. I am surprised by this strategy. It doesn't make
:13:41. > :13:55.sense. It is easier for the runner.
:13:56. > :14:06.He is going for a change, he started the match at about Avraming 133mph,
:14:07. > :14:11.Raonic. Which is eight miles up on his tournament so far, he came out
:14:12. > :14:13.with a deaf lit plan to try and rock Federer with pace, it hasn't quite
:14:14. > :14:36.worked. He did have one love 15! 15! He is not trying to pass Raonic
:14:37. > :14:40.but playing at his feet. It was a good passing shot. When you a
:14:41. > :14:44.forehand land on the service line you going into Federer's strength.
:14:45. > :15:25.You can't play four feet in and four feet inside the baseline.
:15:26. > :15:32.It has been very conservative in terms of pace, when he has allowed
:15:33. > :15:39.Federer to set up for pass, it's a dangerous ploy just to make it.
:15:40. > :15:43.And it St a dangerous ploy when row going so Kvitovatively not near the
:15:44. > :15:51.line, Federer very adapt at making the first passing shot to set up a
:15:52. > :15:59.better opportunity with the second. Early break point chance for
:16:00. > :16:01.Federer. Conservatively not near the line,
:16:02. > :16:03.Federer very adapt at making the first passing shot to set up a
:16:04. > :16:05.better opportunity with the second. Early break point chance for
:16:06. > :16:19.Federer. Is a dangerous ploy when row going
:16:20. > :16:21.so conservatively not near the line, Federer very adapt at making the
:16:22. > :16:24.first passing shot to set up a better opportunity with the second.
:16:25. > :16:25.Early break point chance for Federer.
:16:26. > :16:27.So desperate the keep it on the Federer backhand he was willing to
:16:28. > :16:31.flirt with disaster and disaster struck for Raonic. He is a break
:16:32. > :16:36.down early here, in the second set. And the one thing he will have to
:16:37. > :16:41.contend with as the set develops is how well Roger has been serving. You
:16:42. > :16:48.talked about conservative to the line, he has been conservative with
:16:49. > :16:50.his serve. 75 on the add. If you look at Federer's quickly, look at
:16:51. > :17:04.that for accuracy. Unbelievable.
:17:05. > :17:13.That is the story. When Raonic, why he hasn't gone on to win a Grand
:17:14. > :17:26.Slam. Ultimately you have to hit the line, in these type of matches.
:17:27. > :17:38.Obviously Federer feels it. The momentum on his side.
:17:39. > :18:40.You also feel like you can have a little fun out there. Now.
:18:41. > :18:53.That is one of the other problems, he durt hurt you off both flans,
:18:54. > :18:55.there is times a ten mile an hour differential between forehand and
:18:56. > :19:00.backhand return. Federer has a safe zone to go there. He has the chance
:19:01. > :19:05.to bide his time and when you are thinking about playing Federer on a
:19:06. > :19:08.grass court, conservatively it is not going to do it.
:19:09. > :19:27.Raonic has got the weapons. He has to be aggressive.
:19:28. > :19:35.Very much like last year, just get the feeling he hasn't really
:19:36. > :20:06.developed so much more, in the last 12 months.
:20:07. > :20:20.Fd has the luxury of being a break up, the return games are not as
:20:21. > :20:25.important. Not as importance but there is there a danger if you don't
:20:26. > :20:33.keep plugging in you lose your rhythm? He has to staying a sieve,
:20:34. > :20:44.you have the platform to really go for the kill in this set. That won't
:20:45. > :20:48.do it. Just hesitation, it is not a natural
:20:49. > :20:54.move forward, he is not somebody that is serve and volley, he serves
:20:55. > :21:13.and then runs the net to volley in. Not one of his finer displays.
:21:14. > :21:46.No volley needed. Another ace to add to the collection. We have seen some
:21:47. > :21:51.of the best of Roger in the 41 minutes this match has been going, I
:21:52. > :21:55.know the argument about who is greatest player ever is redundant
:21:56. > :22:00.because of different circumstances, surface, technology, but is he the
:22:01. > :22:06.most complete player you think you have ever seen, Tim? Absolutely. I
:22:07. > :22:10.think when you look at all facet of his game and I have experienced it
:22:11. > :22:16.on this court, you are really tried to work out where you can attack and
:22:17. > :22:20.his serve, as we swau the accuracy first and second serve is fantastic,
:22:21. > :22:24.he is very good at getting the ball back in play on the return of serve,
:22:25. > :22:30.when he gets the chance to attack off the forehand. His backhand is
:22:31. > :22:34.probably the most improved shot in tennis, he moves well, he is
:22:35. > :22:40.volleying confidently, there are just no weaknesses in his game. .
:22:41. > :22:45.And the longevity, the fact he is 14 years between his first and 18th
:22:46. > :22:49.Grand Slam, is just remarkable. There are so many trials and
:22:50. > :22:51.tribulations overs such a long period, and he stuck with it, and
:22:52. > :23:38.still is winning. When Federer started working with
:23:39. > :23:42.Edberg he enjournaled him to volley more, Roger thought it was a panic
:23:43. > :23:46.tactic. -- encouraged.
:23:47. > :23:57.Looking pretty good to me now. What Stefan encouraged him to do,
:23:58. > :24:02.when he was up 30, 40-0, serve and volley to become more comfortable,
:24:03. > :24:03.and then as a change up, when he was behind to be aggressive, he was
:24:04. > :24:20.confident to do it. We have talked about the racket
:24:21. > :24:25.change in terms of his backhand, the slightly bigger head he went to,
:24:26. > :24:29.surface area, the ball, it has become a weapon rather than a shot
:24:30. > :24:35.he defended at times but how much did that contribute to his ability
:24:36. > :24:39.to serve and volley with Stefan, the two coincided. It is a small piece
:24:40. > :24:43.of the puzzle that came together. There is no doubt it has been a huge
:24:44. > :24:54.benefit on the backhand side but more pop on the serve. A bit of help
:24:55. > :25:11.on the volleys and things have come together nicely.
:25:12. > :25:22.It goes to show as a top player you have to look to improve, find ways
:25:23. > :25:27.to do it. That point from Raonic, 90mph, Federer chips it back, what
:25:28. > :25:38.is the strategy from Raonic? He is not winning the baseline exchanges.
:25:39. > :26:02.Another one of these unforced errors, he can't afford them any
:26:03. > :26:06.more. It has been very predictable with
:26:07. > :26:09.his second serve, almost again exclusively going into the backhand
:26:10. > :26:13.of Federer. Just floating the ball back, with
:26:14. > :26:15.nothing on it, forcing Raonic to generate pace and placement, at the
:26:16. > :26:23.same time, straight after the serve. And no first serves in this game,
:26:24. > :26:59.not helping. Talked about some of Raonic's shots
:27:00. > :27:39.being a bit safe, that was OK from Federer.
:27:40. > :28:24.That is what he needs now. He needs clean winners.
:28:25. > :28:44.Spun further up and caught Raonic in it. 4-1 double break, second set.
:28:45. > :28:51.We have seen that slice backhand, Raonic has come in virtually every
:28:52. > :28:54.time up the line, look at this, look at Federer's eyes looking down the
:28:55. > :28:59.court here, the ball is south his hands and he is still able to look
:29:00. > :29:03.at where his opponent is. It is remarkable. I don't know anyone who
:29:04. > :29:08.serves like that, looking for the down the court for as long. It is
:29:09. > :29:13.certainly one of his trademark, but one of the things he does well, is
:29:14. > :29:19.elevate, great use of the legs. Legs. Watch how his feet keep going
:29:20. > :29:29.up and up and up. There is where so much of the power is generated.
:29:30. > :29:33.That is a good foot off the ground. Great balance after the serve to
:29:34. > :29:37.move for the second shot, if it does come back.
:29:38. > :29:44.It is easy power, that is what contributes to the great accuracy.
:29:45. > :29:48.Easy power, good accuracy but limited stress on the body. You can
:29:49. > :29:55.look at that on every shot. The technique is to good, that I'm'll
:29:56. > :29:59.sure that plays a large part into why he's really remained injury
:30:00. > :30:05.free. Very disappointing that he got injured bathing the babies.
:30:06. > :30:53.Dangerous past time! You always feel when the rally gets
:30:54. > :31:50.longer, that Federer has got the edge.
:31:51. > :31:58.Safe to say that Raonic has not find his rhythm in many areas but as a
:31:59. > :32:08.big man, footwork is not really getting into position.
:32:09. > :32:21.Federer is running too many points on his second serve. -- is winning.
:32:22. > :32:30.67% behind his second serve and only losing two points behind his first.
:32:31. > :32:46.That looks like an exhibition. The shackles are off. Let's play. He is
:32:47. > :32:49.one of the few players that can carry matches when it is this
:32:50. > :32:56.one-sided because you can still sit here and looked on in amazement at
:32:57. > :33:02.just how good it is. Slightly concerned that Federer might charge
:33:03. > :33:11.for this lesson! It always takes two and I am disappointed with Raonic,
:33:12. > :33:18.but someone of his visit, he has not imposed himself, where he has played
:33:19. > :33:20.before. He beat him, after all, last year in the semifinal. He is not the
:33:21. > :33:44.same player. How much is Federer charging by the
:33:45. > :34:08.hour? Is it still six figures? Or is it seven figures for the hour?
:34:09. > :34:15.He was very lucky to get away with that, to be honest. He is just too
:34:16. > :34:19.safe, he has the forehand that he wants but he has to dominate with
:34:20. > :34:23.that shot and Federer had all the time in the world to step in and
:34:24. > :34:33.crunch that backhand pass, I am surprised to see him missing it.
:34:34. > :34:37.It is still under one hour, maybe he wants to finish the job on his
:34:38. > :35:11.serve. Not much his corner can do. At this
:35:12. > :35:15.very moment. They talked about strategy and all of the details
:35:16. > :35:55.involved. Ultimately, it is about the player.
:35:56. > :36:04.That is a great pass, don't get me wrong, but if you give a top player
:36:05. > :36:05.some idea of where you are going, every time they are going to do
:36:06. > :36:29.something like this. 137 macro spur hour. -- 137 macro
:36:30. > :36:47.mph. That was a couple of pacey
:36:48. > :37:29.deliveries yet again from Raonic. He has come back from 2-0 down
:37:30. > :37:40.before and that was against David Goffin in the round of 16, Raonic
:37:41. > :37:44.winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, David Gough and is not here because of an ankle
:37:45. > :37:52.injury after slipping into the covers at the back of the court. A
:37:53. > :37:57.lot of those fans will be glad they came today. Not the best weather
:37:58. > :38:02.earlier on today but as the day has gone on, as predicted, the clouds
:38:03. > :38:05.have lifted and the sunshine came out, as it has for the majority of
:38:06. > :38:10.this championship so far. The weather forecast is set fair for the
:38:11. > :38:17.rest of the week as well, which is great. This tournament is thankful
:38:18. > :38:28.to have a roof but it does look its best with the roof open. Federer
:38:29. > :38:36.served for the second set. He has to change quickly. If Federer finished
:38:37. > :38:43.this, he has to do a better job of getting his nose in front in the
:38:44. > :38:45.third and be more aggressive. Federer is not going to come out and
:38:46. > :39:09.lose this match, you have to win it. It wasn't the fastest first serve,
:39:10. > :39:30.but the placement was the key. It is tough to change any tactic
:39:31. > :39:34.when you cannot put your racquet onto the ball, and that is what
:39:35. > :39:44.Federer has done on his service games in the second set. It has
:39:45. > :39:47.taken less than one hour for Federer to take the 2-0 lead here on Centre
:39:48. > :40:02.Court. SUE BARKER: He is flying, Roger
:40:03. > :40:13.Federer, he is in a hurry on Centre Court. On Court Number One, this is
:40:14. > :40:16.on BBC Two, Novak Djokovic, 3-2 up, on serve against Tomas Berdych, the
:40:17. > :40:23.former finalist. That match is over on BBC Two. The big news here at
:40:24. > :40:30.Wimbledon today is this man, Sam Querrey, has put out Andy Murray, he
:40:31. > :40:35.was limping his way to the net, in a lot of pain, in the third set but he
:40:36. > :40:42.battled on but unless one hour, he lost the fourth and fifth sets. He
:40:43. > :40:46.was only fitting service of about 80 or 90 mph and was unable to move
:40:47. > :40:51.around the court. But this man played the match of his life, he
:40:52. > :40:55.stayed firm, big serves, particularly on the forehand side,
:40:56. > :40:59.and Sam Querrey, big smile, he has been waiting so long to make it
:41:00. > :41:04.through to a Grand Slam semifinal and has finally achieved it. Putting
:41:05. > :41:09.out the defending champion for the second year in a row because he beat
:41:10. > :41:12.Novak Djokovic last year but huge disappointment for Andy Murray and
:41:13. > :41:19.he will face many weeks off as he tries to get his hip right. That was
:41:20. > :41:25.on Centre Court, Sam Querrey will face this man, Baron Cilic, who
:41:26. > :41:30.defeated Gilles Muller. He could not pull off another upset. Look at that
:41:31. > :41:34.reaction! He said afterwards that he could see the school on Centre Court
:41:35. > :41:39.and he knew that Sam Querrey had gone through, this is a huge
:41:40. > :41:43.opportunity for him, he lost in the quarterfinals for the last four
:41:44. > :41:49.years. Baron Cilic is through on Centre Court. Aaron Cilic against
:41:50. > :41:56.Sam Querrey in the semifinal. -- Marilyn Cilic. That is what is
:41:57. > :42:02.happening elsewhere, Roger Federer senior must be very happy with his
:42:03. > :42:06.son. Raonic is not on court, so the king of the court, as they say, is
:42:07. > :42:13.waiting for the third set. Back we go. His many fans are thrilled with
:42:14. > :42:19.how things have progressed. He has been suffering before the tournament
:42:20. > :42:25.with a cold that is getting better day by day but he has wisely but on
:42:26. > :42:29.his jumper, as Raonic has taken leave of the court at the end of the
:42:30. > :42:34.set, something that has become a frequent occurrence in tennis. Not
:42:35. > :42:43.everybody is a great lover of it. If I am honest. It is too long, it has
:42:44. > :42:47.taken eight or nine minutes and I understand the urgency at times but
:42:48. > :42:57.it is becoming a little bit of a habit with most players. Is there
:42:58. > :43:00.any solution? It is difficult. How can you say that somebody in a five
:43:01. > :43:09.set match cannot have a comfort break? It does seem to take too long
:43:10. > :43:15.these days. From the point of view of Raonic, he needs to try anything
:43:16. > :43:18.to break up this rhythm. There is an argument to say that you can have
:43:19. > :43:23.one of them free of charge and others cost you one point, or if you
:43:24. > :43:27.have two medical time-outs, you get the point penalty, would you need
:43:28. > :43:34.this? It would certainly make the players think twice. That is one of
:43:35. > :43:38.the ideas people talk about. Players take advantage of the rules. You
:43:39. > :43:45.cannot blame the players. The rule needs to be improved. It is like the
:43:46. > :43:50.start time of the matches, one o'clock normally ends up starting at
:43:51. > :43:55.12 minutes passed and related to other sports, Champions League
:43:56. > :44:01.finals or rugby international, when they say it is 7:45pm, it will be
:44:02. > :44:15.that. It is harder when you have another match coming on following
:44:16. > :44:18.you. But this is taking too long. Even the crowd think it is taking
:44:19. > :44:26.too long, there is a slow handclap for Raonic. He had the crowd against
:44:27. > :44:29.and before the match started and is not helping his cause but he is
:44:30. > :45:07.running to the baseline. He has yet to get up and running in the match.
:45:08. > :45:14.And that is what he does to you, if you have to wait for ten or 15
:45:15. > :46:59.minutes for the match to continue. It was an excellent start to the
:47:00. > :47:19.game. It is getting a little bit more tricky for Raonic.
:47:20. > :47:23.You would expect this, like most of the second serves, to be going into
:47:24. > :47:34.the Roger Federer backhand. That was well left, in the end, from
:47:35. > :47:56.Raonic. If he ever had a chance to come
:47:57. > :48:06.back, it starts right here, holding serve. That is the basic principle.
:48:07. > :48:11.And then just taking a lot more chances, playing a lot more
:48:12. > :48:35.aggressive tennis. He is past the point of taking prisoners.
:48:36. > :48:42.I might be clutching at Strauss, but this is only the seventh point he
:48:43. > :48:52.has won on the Federer served. -- clutching at straws.
:48:53. > :49:14.This is what a bathroom break will do to you.
:49:15. > :49:21.That is a good serve but in similar situations, Federer would have found
:49:22. > :49:48.a way to get that ball back into play, Raonic has to do the same.
:49:49. > :49:59.Raonic established himself in that rally. Federer played the slice. He
:50:00. > :50:29.had the opportunity to be aggressive and go forward.
:50:30. > :51:16.The first chance for Raonic to break. It did not last long.
:51:17. > :51:27.Federer almost angrily hitting the ball back. Opening the window
:51:28. > :51:32.slightly for Raonic, three forehand errors in this game.
:51:33. > :51:57.You get the feeling there is still unfinished business from last year's
:51:58. > :51:58.semifinal. Tennis players do remember when things were not going
:51:59. > :52:16.so well. That was an important game, not to
:52:17. > :52:22.allow the momentum to change, you could see his long-time coach
:52:23. > :52:33.getting up, and at 1-0 in the second, you would not expect him to
:52:34. > :53:16.get frustrated. He has watched tighter matches in the past.
:53:17. > :53:27.We talked about it. Federer wanting the ball back. Very makeable. The
:53:28. > :53:30.volley from the Canadian. And he hits it wide. It is not his comfort
:53:31. > :54:03.zone. But I like his attitude, he is
:54:04. > :54:29.fighting and giving everything his best shot.
:54:30. > :54:37.Amber reality is, there is only so much that Raonic can do, his game is
:54:38. > :54:42.not quite as complete as Federer's. He has the heavyweight shots and the
:54:43. > :54:47.fast serve but when Roger is playing at his best, it is no great surprise
:54:48. > :54:55.that the head-to-head is 9-3 four Federer. You talked earlier about
:54:56. > :55:00.what he can do differently, what is the game plan for Raonic? This is
:55:01. > :55:05.where his shots have dropped before Federer hits the winner, being
:55:06. > :55:12.predictable, taking the ball to the backhand side. There are too many
:55:13. > :55:16.red dots on the left-hand side. And Federer is very quickly reading his
:55:17. > :55:21.intention. And pretty much steps there before he gets the ball. You
:55:22. > :55:28.have to be more unbridgeable, you have to be more dangerous, really.
:55:29. > :55:37.You have to go for it, you are down 2-0. You have nothing to lose. It is
:55:38. > :55:43.a cliche to attack the strength to get to the weakness. But with
:55:44. > :55:49.Federer's backhand against his nemesis, Rafa Nadal, it has become a
:55:50. > :55:54.strength rather than a shot he uses to get into play. The backhand from
:55:55. > :55:57.Federer is the most improved shot in tennis but Rafa Nadal has had the
:55:58. > :56:02.most success against Federer and when he does, he takes his time
:56:03. > :56:08.away, he is aggressive and he keeps him on the back foot. Raonic is not
:56:09. > :56:09.going to play the same way as the left-handed Rafa Nadal but he has to
:56:10. > :56:56.look to attack. You have to cut out those unforced
:56:57. > :57:06.errors. That was the second serve return. He did hit that smash.
:57:07. > :57:39.Thankfully, Raonic ducked down! Normal service has resumed on the
:57:40. > :57:41.Federer serve, no blemishes this time around. The pressure is
:57:42. > :58:15.building once again on the Canadian. This runaround is not going to work,
:58:16. > :58:19.it is too fast and having too many big steps around, everybody knows he
:58:20. > :58:23.is doing that and he will open up the forehand side. The footwork was
:58:24. > :58:27.not quick enough, by the time he was going to hit that forehand, it was
:58:28. > :58:35.around his ankles and that put him in a defensive position.
:58:36. > :58:43.It is because he wants to protect the backhand side. Once you're in
:58:44. > :58:45.the quarterfinal of the Grand Slam, you are supposed to have no
:58:46. > :59:23.witnesses. That was better. Good, aggressive
:59:24. > :59:29.approach, he really got some work on that size, he kept low. Federer, if
:59:30. > :59:31.anything, just lifting his head on the backhand early and that caused
:59:32. > :00:18.the misfit. -- mis-hit. He has established himself in this
:00:19. > :00:24.third set. He's taken the mouth guard out that he likes to wear, and
:00:25. > :00:28.he's chewing on the dates that he dislikes intensely but does it just
:00:29. > :00:32.because he knows it is good for his energy levels throughout the five
:00:33. > :00:39.sets. Boy. Tough day at office. Getting a
:00:40. > :00:43.less sop from Federer in having to eat dates.
:00:44. > :00:48.-- lesson. He has taken out his mouth piece.
:00:49. > :00:58.He wanted to fix the alignment of his body, rather than the orthotics,
:00:59. > :01:02.he needed a different approach. Top down and got a fitness trainer from
:01:03. > :01:07.outside tennis, he felt like he was getting injured too much. He
:01:08. > :01:12.certainly has left no stone uncovereded. And you have to respect
:01:13. > :01:16.that. He is not the most talented player, he thinks a lot about it. He
:01:17. > :01:20.wants to improve. He reached a Wimbledon final last year, he is a
:01:21. > :01:28.solid top ten player in the world, nothing wrong with that, but going
:01:29. > :02:08.to the extra, he needs to improve on one or two things, maybe three.
:02:09. > :02:52.Amazing how much ease, very little effort Federer wins his service
:02:53. > :02:56.games. That is hard psychologically when you play someone who keeps
:02:57. > :03:08.holding serve and you are grinding it out. Saving break points.
:03:09. > :03:17.V he can see the finish line. Doesn't want to exert too much
:03:18. > :03:25.energy. Just wants to finish it here.
:03:26. > :03:34.Let us see what Raonic has to say about that. Really had to keep his
:03:35. > :03:36.nose in front, and hope maybe he can get through to five all, six all if
:03:37. > :03:53.a tie-break. It has happened before tennis,
:03:54. > :03:55.matches have swung round. People have come back from two sets to
:03:56. > :04:19.love. I am sure you came back many times
:04:20. > :04:25.from two sets to love down, did you ever lose from two sets up? On one
:04:26. > :04:32.very painful occasion against an American. Riley didn't like playing
:04:33. > :04:41.back in the day. Brad Gilbert. Oh no, I know. That's painful! Oh, I'm
:04:42. > :04:45.sorry, didn't know. I wouldn't have asked if I'd known it was Brad. I
:04:46. > :05:21.think it was even at match point. UMPIRE: Game Raonic. New balls
:05:22. > :05:35.please. Is serve and volley working
:05:36. > :05:41.perfectly there, but he is going to have to try and figure out
:05:42. > :05:45.something, Raonic, to upset the rhythm of Federer on serve. Let us
:05:46. > :05:48.look at where wronger has been directing most of his sever, as you
:05:49. > :05:53.can see the large majority, first point of the game have been going
:05:54. > :05:57.into the backhand side. It is almost time, isn't it when you see that
:05:58. > :06:01.kind of number to take a gamble and sit on the backhand return and try
:06:02. > :06:07.and make something great happen and give the one out wide? Absolutely,
:06:08. > :06:11.he must have figured out that is where Federer likes to serve.
:06:12. > :06:17.Players like to keep their routine, the especially the winner formula.
:06:18. > :06:22.Also when Raonic has only had one break point opportunity and that is
:06:23. > :06:26.when Federer made three unforced errors on the forehand you have to
:06:27. > :06:31.think why doesn't he stand on the baseline, why doesn't he stand six,
:06:32. > :06:36.seven feet behind the baseline to change things up? Look at that, when
:06:37. > :06:40.he played Federer last year, 71mph off his backhand, that has dropped
:06:41. > :06:43.to 66. Maybe the times is just not there for him as well. Which is
:06:44. > :06:46.obviously converse will giving Federer more time, which is not a
:06:47. > :06:51.good thing. He hasn't had the best of years as
:06:52. > :06:55.well. Last year he came in with a good
:06:56. > :07:00.Queen's Club final. He lost first round there.
:07:01. > :07:13.He was injured in the spring. Just his second double fault of the
:07:14. > :07:34.tournament. It it is not exact laming for the
:07:35. > :07:39.middle of the box on the second as well.
:07:40. > :07:48.-- exactly aiming. That is where you feel if he took
:07:49. > :07:53.gamble, which he is at that stage now, and sits there with a backhand
:07:54. > :07:54.grip and tries to rip the return, because that is feeding his
:07:55. > :08:23.forehand. Like London buses.
:08:24. > :08:32.As if you'd know! Went on in 95 I think was the last time. By mistake!
:08:33. > :08:34.UMPIRE: Right centre service line, the ball is called out.
:08:35. > :09:00.Sorry, that was the Tube. This has suddenly become very
:09:01. > :09:11.interesting. Just a little dip from Federer on the serve, expected him
:09:12. > :09:12.to make that as well. Break point opportunity, you feel Raonic has to
:09:13. > :09:37.take. Well if you have one chance in the
:09:38. > :09:43.match and you play it safe, the next one with the frame. Have a look at
:09:44. > :09:53.the second receive. Rolled it back on the Federer's forehand. .
:09:54. > :10:04.Not going to get the job done. UMPIRE: Mr Raonic challenges the
:10:05. > :10:49.call. Ball is called in. UMPIRE: The call stands.
:10:50. > :10:56.Oh, that is the best shot of the match from Raonic.
:10:57. > :11:11.And he has to run an considerable distance to make it.
:11:12. > :11:27.Maybe the moment of inspiration that Raonic needs to mount a come back.
:11:28. > :11:35.Federer responds. Obviously the most critical moment for him in this
:11:36. > :12:37.match. SUE BARKER: Which have come to the
:12:38. > :12:41.end of our transmission here on BBC one, if you want to continue
:12:42. > :12:46.watching the match it is our featured match on the Red Button, we

:13:13. > :13:15.is Andy leaving this afternoon with a member of his management team. You
:13:16. > :13:20.will be able to see him limping back out to the car park, it happened
:13:21. > :13:24.about in the third set, he was, he did take the first set and the third
:13:25. > :13:30.set but couldn't contain Querrey at all, so sad news that Andy Murray is
:13:31. > :13:31.out of Wimbledon, we will have more for you over on BBC Two, bye.
