:00:11. > :00:13.Bristol is a national programme. We are going to argue over to

:00:14. > :00:28.Wimbledon. Larkham to Wimbledon on ladies

:00:29. > :00:33.finals day. This was the moment that guy been a good loser was cloned

:00:34. > :00:50.-- Muguruza. She lost two years ago to Serena Williams and today she

:00:51. > :00:58.took on a player who inspired her as a youngster. Venus Williams so

:00:59. > :01:02.sporting in defeat. Muguruza is the new champion at Wimbledon. She has

:01:03. > :01:07.played so well throughout the Championships, and the dropping a

:01:08. > :01:16.set. She saved two said points in the first set and raised through the

:01:17. > :01:21.second set. The crowd rise to a new star. Her coach Conchita Martinez

:01:22. > :01:26.absolutely delighted. Only the second Spanish woman to win the

:01:27. > :01:33.title at Wimbledon. We will be hoping to speak to Muguruza so on.

:01:34. > :01:41.We are heading back to Centre Court for the men's doubles. We can show

:01:42. > :02:00.you what happened in the set point in the third set. Marcelo Melo and

:02:01. > :02:15.Lukasz Kubot serving. Mail and Kubot take the boat set. It is Oliver

:02:16. > :02:19.Marach and Mate Pavic serving. Let us join the commentators John Lloyd,

:02:20. > :02:44.Peter Fleming and Mark Petchey. He has only hit two lobs. But they

:02:45. > :02:48.have both been spectacularly good. One on a break point that really

:02:49. > :02:55.turned the tide in their favour and this one made of the same. That was

:02:56. > :03:14.a terrific pick-up. The lob was simply better.

:03:15. > :03:21.For the first time we feel as though Kubot took a calculated risk in the

:03:22. > :03:29.tie-break sitting on his full rant with a terrific return but here we

:03:30. > :03:37.have another very big point. What will Marakh decide to do? That

:03:38. > :03:55.works. Terrific serve. Kubot pretty certain that was where

:03:56. > :05:47.the serve was going. Interesting that they decided on the

:05:48. > :05:52.tie-break to stand back, but they have not done it in open play, and

:05:53. > :05:53.why they thought then it was a good idea and subsequently haven't. Very

:05:54. > :06:26.interesting. Because service games like this just

:06:27. > :06:52.build your confidence. That was some response by Kubot. He

:06:53. > :07:00.got so much pace on the ball. Completely surprised Marakh. Yes. In

:07:01. > :07:06.a service game like that it does not matter where you are standing,

:07:07. > :07:11.you're not breaking serve. Often it is good to get your opponent to

:07:12. > :07:16.think a little. Get them out of their comfort zone. What is this?

:07:17. > :07:18.Maybe we should try something different. You have already

:07:19. > :07:51.succeeded if you get that response. Yes, on that last serve, a good

:07:52. > :07:57.example of why doubles on grass is difficult. It is difficult to break

:07:58. > :09:18.serve because you often get slightly erratic bounces.

:09:19. > :09:31.The ninth ace of the match, the 77th of the tournament. Just 32 for Kubot

:09:32. > :09:50.and properly which, considering how well the serve, is not a lot.

:09:51. > :10:04.The trainer working on the top part of the need for Marakh. I guess that

:10:05. > :10:13.would be the quad. Perhaps the quadriceps tendon down there. It

:10:14. > :10:15.certainly does not seem to be impairing him much. He is still

:10:16. > :10:35.getting around the court pretty quickly.

:10:36. > :11:17.Smiles from the team, still enjoying the challenge ahead of them.

:11:18. > :11:22.It has been a while coming that that is the first volley from Melo in

:11:23. > :11:58.particular. Then he was cautious with that one

:11:59. > :12:08.as well after the miss on the first point. Here is a chance. Yes, and

:12:09. > :12:14.that time Marakh to just a little off of the return, I load the ball

:12:15. > :12:22.to drop. When you rip the returns as he has done throughout this match

:12:23. > :12:40.you give your opponents waist high volleys. He made sure he got that

:12:41. > :12:45.serve in. Sometimes you feel like this profile of hitting the ball is

:12:46. > :12:49.hard as you can it does not get to utilise scoreboard pressure. If you

:12:50. > :12:54.never make your opponent play on a big point like that in some ways you

:12:55. > :13:06.never get to know how composed they are. It seemed like a decent play

:13:07. > :13:07.maybe even to drop back, get both of them on the baseline, give yourself

:13:08. > :13:29.more time. Good serve. It checked a little bit,

:13:30. > :13:36.that ball. Yeah, it is virtually impossible to return a serve that

:13:37. > :13:39.hits the service line. The ball just checks and it is impossible to time

:13:40. > :14:03.it properly. He invented a shot. An overhead lob.

:14:04. > :14:23.It was unbelievably successful. Kubot trying to help his partner

:14:24. > :14:37.out. Just claimed his move slightly wrong. He has made it. Nothing wrong

:14:38. > :15:03.with the timing off of the return. Beirut back into this final beckons

:15:04. > :15:07.for Marakh and Pavic. I thought that I'd got away from him a little bit

:15:08. > :15:34.but he reacted well. Just connected with a couple of

:15:35. > :15:55.forehands. Out of this world. That could have been Novak Djokovic.

:15:56. > :16:11.He left hand of Novak hitting that return, perfectly timed.

:16:12. > :16:21.Too good, too much power, that was vicious from Marek but his partner

:16:22. > :16:25.set it up well for him. Yeah, it and again Marakh's backhand mate have

:16:26. > :16:57.had the fence but he could not get out of the way. That was a rocket.

:16:58. > :17:26.The Croatian is on fire. Cannot put a foot wrong at the moment.

:17:27. > :17:36.Kubot this time response. 120 Zevon. Marakh challenging the call. They

:17:37. > :19:14.have touched 130 today. Some nice finishing touches to a

:19:15. > :19:19.again a stunning return from Kubot who is matching Pavic's achievement

:19:20. > :19:21.in the last game. Lovely passage of play between these two teams right

:19:22. > :20:12.now. Did not need to hit that that hard.

:20:13. > :20:19.If he is staying at home you lose the point anyway. See if you cannot

:20:20. > :20:55.put it into play. It does not have to be an out late winner.

:20:56. > :21:05.They break back. Quality game from Kubot. His partner was calling out.

:21:06. > :21:12.I think he was correct. Prudence made the day and he made it anyway

:21:13. > :21:18.just to be sure. Breaks traded for the first time today. How could you

:21:19. > :21:27.possibly have predicted this? Two breaks on a roll, the way they have

:21:28. > :21:33.been serving. Yet, the second serve was short. In the middle of the box.

:21:34. > :21:44.I suppose the longer this match wears on the more fatigued or four

:21:45. > :21:49.players' nerves become and serves that they might have hit in the

:21:50. > :21:59.first set or two where they might have taken a risk are now falling by

:22:00. > :22:05.the wayside. Those serves... They are more worried about double

:22:06. > :22:16.faulting, so allowing the return teams to get their rackets on a few

:22:17. > :22:25.more returns. Intrigued building with those couple of breaks.

:22:26. > :22:27.Certainly the Croatian can remain after the last game, a bit of food

:22:28. > :23:08.for thought for Kubot and Melo. That was a quality second serve,

:23:09. > :23:14.continuing where you left off in the previous game. That has been one of

:23:15. > :23:23.the big differences between the two. Kubot and Melo winning over 60% of

:23:24. > :23:24.their points on the second serve compared to just over 40% for their

:23:25. > :24:05.opponents. He is not missing at the moment on

:24:06. > :24:07.the return. Yeah, but I do not understand why they persist with

:24:08. > :24:16.that formation when you have a right-hander who is able to serve

:24:17. > :24:20.though serve out wide. Play orthodox so he cannot does push the ball up

:24:21. > :24:32.the line, make him go crosscourt in front of the net. It is not an easy

:24:33. > :24:54.shot to hit. A good volley from Melo. Yes, again it was a net court.

:24:55. > :25:40.This is just breathtaking returning. Every single one has been a winner

:25:41. > :25:47.or has found the shoelaces of Kubot or Melo as they have come in and raw

:25:48. > :25:49.power this time delivered to the ball from Pavic. We have seen Marach

:25:50. > :26:48.hit some beautiful forehands today. Took too long between the serve. Too

:26:49. > :26:52.much time to think about that serve. It is more the quality of returning

:26:53. > :26:57.than any real change in strategy from the team of Pavic and Maric

:26:58. > :27:00.that has contributed to that. You need to get the other team to think

:27:01. > :27:04.a little bit brother than just playing on instinct though it has

:27:05. > :27:14.been the quality that has forced them to think. They changed their

:27:15. > :27:15.position and you could see Kubot looked very nervous about that

:27:16. > :29:53.second serve. Once again Kubot struck the returns

:29:54. > :30:04.venomously but right at the net men. Easily put away.

:30:05. > :30:18.From Pavic, on the line. How cool we did he put away that overhead? --

:30:19. > :30:57.coolly. There is no doubt that Pavic has

:30:58. > :31:02.been the best player on court the last four, five games. He has gone

:31:03. > :31:08.up a level. It is amazing to think he peaked at 295 in the world in

:31:09. > :31:18.2013 in singles. He never finished a year higher than 317 in the world.

:31:19. > :31:34.When you see him hit the ball as beautifully as he has at times.

:31:35. > :31:40.And having dropped their serve and gaining the break for the first time

:31:41. > :31:47.in the fourth set, that is an impressive sequence of games. Both

:31:48. > :31:51.players, both teams have been taken the distance in the run through to

:31:52. > :31:57.the Wimbledon final and both will feel confident, if and when we get

:31:58. > :32:05.to a deciding set. Of course, there will be no tie-breaker. Who knows

:32:06. > :32:08.how epic this meant's doubles final will end up proving to be? Still

:32:09. > :32:39.work to be done in the fourth set. He is absolutely everywhere at the

:32:40. > :33:18.moment, isn't he? He mistimed that. There was concern

:33:19. > :33:23.about Pavic coming into the match, whether he had hurt his hand in the

:33:24. > :33:30.semifinals. We have not seen any sight of that but that one certainly

:33:31. > :33:36.stung the Austrian. How is this returning Chris Nike is not missing

:33:37. > :33:42.now! He is just timing the ball. -- how is this returning?. It is great

:33:43. > :33:53.returning. But, again, he is catching its late. Serve it wide,

:33:54. > :33:54.force him to stretch and see if you can get crosscourt. That is not

:33:55. > :34:35.easy. He gave him the total off pace

:34:36. > :34:50.balls. He was all over it, also. He missed

:34:51. > :34:56.his target by about two grommet three inches, otherwise it would

:34:57. > :35:18.have been a brutal return. -- by about two, three inches.

:35:19. > :35:28.Getting fluid on board as he takes the balls from the ball boy. As he

:35:29. > :35:30.lines up to try to take this meant's doubles final into a fifth and

:35:31. > :36:07.deciding set. Good hands. Could have thought he

:36:08. > :36:09.hit a winner on the first. Prepared for the next that came at him and

:36:10. > :37:23.put that away. A good point. Just the third stubble for the team.

:37:24. > :37:57.More than offsetting that with 11 aces.

:37:58. > :38:05.A couple of points, being vigilant with the ball coming back from a

:38:06. > :38:07.somewhat surprising situation. Just shy of three hours in the match and

:38:08. > :38:34.we have a couple of set points. And it will be a fifth and deciding

:38:35. > :38:44.set that determines the winner of the men's doubles competition here

:38:45. > :38:52.at the Wimbledon Championships. Not a lot of need for Hawk-Eye, off the

:38:53. > :38:57.final return from Melo which hit the canvas on-the-fly. They were

:38:58. > :39:07.favourites coming into this final. The number four seeds. Kubot and

:39:08. > :39:15.Melo but you have to say that Marach and Pavic of the form players,

:39:16. > :39:22.through the fourth set and they were fantastic. When you consider the

:39:23. > :39:26.percentage of first serves made by Kubot and Melo, the fact they were

:39:27. > :39:30.broken twice will be concerning and may be for the first time in this

:39:31. > :39:40.match, they need to change their strategy to protect their serve.

:39:41. > :39:44.They did not need to change anything in the first three sets, but now you

:39:45. > :39:51.feel they need to think about things differently. Yes, I could not agree

:39:52. > :39:57.more. Interesting. I suppose Pavic just hack to go, because why would

:39:58. > :40:02.you go in that situation? You have been dominant and now you allow your

:40:03. > :40:13.opponent a break to pull themselves together. It has been a constant

:40:14. > :40:17.cause debate, the bathroom breaks at the end of sets and medical

:40:18. > :40:21.time-outs taken in matches. You kind of feel the only way you can

:40:22. > :40:26.possibly govern them is by literally having one free one each, a medical

:40:27. > :40:34.time-out and a bathroom break at the end of a set, and the next one you

:40:35. > :40:40.take, you lose a point. Do you need to go, or just use it to compose

:40:41. > :40:48.yourself? There is one of the great names and personalities in the world

:40:49. > :40:55.of tennis. How many years we loved listening to John Barrett on the

:40:56. > :41:08.BBC. His wife in front of him to the left, Angela Mortimer Barrett, the

:41:09. > :41:19.winner here in... Way back when. 61, I bet it was. Is that a guess? I

:41:20. > :41:26.think it was 61. Australian Open in 58, French Open in 55. Just the

:41:27. > :41:34.semifinal at the US Open in 1961. You looked that up quickly, Peter.

:41:35. > :41:45.Quick recall, John. This man is a whizz around computers. People find

:41:46. > :41:50.their way affectively around the Centre Court for the next 45

:41:51. > :41:56.minutes, one hour, or more. No tie-breaker to decide it. The

:41:57. > :43:13.winner takes all. Perhaps he expected the return to be

:43:14. > :43:18.struck with a little more power. That time, Pavic did a nice job of

:43:19. > :44:19.just feeling it. It dropped well inside the baseline.

:44:20. > :44:31.The statement of intent made by Kubot. It was a stronghold. Plenty

:44:32. > :44:48.of volume in terms of the come ons. Huw -- huge intensity out there.

:44:49. > :44:56.Good to see Rod labour in attendance for the men's doubles final. Great

:44:57. > :45:07.to see him around the grounds. It adds to the occasion. How many great

:45:08. > :45:23.champions had Rod Labour as their idol growing up? A lot. -- Rod Laver

:45:24. > :45:27.as their idol? So many great champions. A couple of the really

:45:28. > :45:33.great players of tennis have almost taken back to a different level,

:45:34. > :45:37.becoming almost artists rather than athletes on the court and you

:45:38. > :45:46.certainly felt Rod Laver was one of those.

:45:47. > :45:54.Arguably a man who is taking to the court tomorrow can be in the same

:45:55. > :45:57.category in what he has achieved over the years. What he has given to

:45:58. > :46:18.the crowds around the globe, as well.

:46:19. > :46:42.That spurred Kubot on to a needy hot streak. He is certainly capable of

:46:43. > :47:16.it. There is not a lot you can do about

:47:17. > :48:01.that. A perfectly placed volley. Short

:48:02. > :49:35.enough so that Kubot could barely reach it.

:49:36. > :49:44.A good point, very good point. Excellent volley Abba net.

:49:45. > :50:41.-- an excellent volley at the net. Calm at the net. Good angles.

:50:42. > :50:46.It is going to be fascinating to see what makes a difference between

:50:47. > :50:56.these teams because you have seen a little bit of everything. Some will

:50:57. > :51:03.argue that experience wins and certainly this team have that. There

:51:04. > :51:10.account is heavily in favour than the team they are playing against,

:51:11. > :51:10.but who knows? Nude experience of being here

:51:11. > :51:24.-- the inexperience of being here in this situation perhaps allows them

:51:25. > :51:30.to play more freely. You think perhaps Pavic has been the deciding

:51:31. > :51:37.factor in how things have unfolded. If he can continue the hot streak he

:51:38. > :51:40.has hand, he is going to be offering up chances. They did have an epic

:51:41. > :51:59.semifinal. 17-15, Melo and Pavic. Did that take a little more out of

:52:00. > :52:13.their legs than the team they are taking on today?

:52:14. > :53:16.Spectacular reactions here. Good anticipation as to where the

:53:17. > :53:39.overhead might go. Beautifully guided return from

:53:40. > :56:55.Kubot. You do feel that serve, if you can

:56:56. > :57:02.get pressure on the service game and create that moment when we saw in

:57:03. > :57:06.the fourth, when the double fault came, they could be the possibility

:57:07. > :57:30.it would come again. He lost to the rhythm completely, Kubot.

:57:31. > :57:40.We had that brief sequence of games in the fourth with a couple of

:57:41. > :57:45.breaks and a real shift in momentum. This fifth set is unfolding in a

:57:46. > :57:52.similar fashion to the opening three with utter dominance on serve, so

:57:53. > :57:55.far, from both teams. It really is a waiting game, John, in terms of

:57:56. > :58:01.opportunities that have presented themselves throughout the match.

:58:02. > :58:06.Exactly. Business as usual in this first five games. Nobody has got

:58:07. > :58:11.ahead in the game on the returning side. As we get closer to the

:58:12. > :58:14.business end, and we are almost getting there, then the pressure

:58:15. > :58:22.mounts, when you are that close to winning your first Wimbledon title.

:58:23. > :58:30.And then we might see serves getting shorter and double faults thrown in

:58:31. > :58:34.and someone take charge. Pavic did on that amazing run he had when he

:58:35. > :58:39.opened up his shoulders and was hitting winners all over the place.

:58:40. > :58:42.Do you think it will happen tonight? Probably not. Remember, we have an

:58:43. > :59:34.11pm curfew. Two pretty accurate serves to start

:59:35. > :02:28.off this game. You do not want to be playing this

:02:29. > :02:58.game is your reactions are just a little dull. Could be dangerous.

:02:59. > :03:32.Just missed three out of the team first serves in this final set. We

:03:33. > :03:36.have been here before when we haven't been expecting a break of

:03:37. > :03:40.serve and all of a sudden it comes out of nowhere and that could well

:03:41. > :03:51.be what happens again but Melo making good use of the new balls, he

:03:52. > :03:54.phoned his spots spectacularly. Melo getting a little bit of instruction

:03:55. > :04:02.about which way to go for the return. Looking almost as if it was

:04:03. > :04:08.to the backhand side, to cover the backhand side with the first serve

:04:09. > :04:16.coming down. 11 is attempted winning Wimbledon for Melo. He has been in

:04:17. > :04:31.the final in 2013. This will be Kubot's 12 time.

:04:32. > :04:41.Perseverance pays off in the end. Which of these two teams have

:04:42. > :05:41.persevered and will ultimately walk away with the glory?

:05:42. > :05:50.Just over swung at that return. That second serve was 91 which was OK but

:05:51. > :05:51.it was straight mac in the middle of the service box. Certainly

:05:52. > :07:07.returnable. Spectacular return that time from

:07:08. > :08:05.Melo. At full stretch. Melo did an amazing job of being

:08:06. > :08:26.able to control that ball that was coming at him with such velocity.

:08:27. > :09:03.Visual and audio effects. True surround sound. A little bit

:09:04. > :09:20.exaggerated. They threw everything at that game,

:09:21. > :09:54.Melo and Kubot, but ultimately came away with nothing.

:09:55. > :10:05.Good moving. Very good moving. Managed to get on top of that one

:10:06. > :10:15.quick. So the chip coming. Took two quickstep sound punch that one away.

:10:16. > :10:16.Yeah, nicely played, little dead shot from Maric to keep the ball

:10:17. > :10:34.low. That took a bit of courage to make

:10:35. > :10:40.that serve because he took all of the pays off of it. Marach ended up

:10:41. > :10:42.serving in early at the ball and did not get the pace he was looking for

:10:43. > :11:08.in the return. Good cross he made there. That was a

:11:09. > :11:22.high volley for him to go across on. He gambled. Kubot should have done

:11:23. > :11:25.more with the volley relief. Yet, but it is a difficult one to pull

:11:26. > :11:35.the trigger on in that situation. You want to be careful with it. He

:11:36. > :13:14.had a good look at that return. The box believe that I of relief.

:13:15. > :13:20.Edgy moments for Kubot and Melo to get through. It looked as though

:13:21. > :13:25.Pavic was finding his range on the returns and getting onto everything

:13:26. > :13:43.but a terrific serve from Kubot at 30-30 into the body...

:13:44. > :13:53.This would in many ways be his finest moment. He won in Australia

:13:54. > :14:11.in 2014. Melo also a Grand Slam winner. Pavic won the mixed doubles

:14:12. > :14:15.last year. Of course the scoreboard giving Kubot and Melo a slight

:14:16. > :14:21.advantage because any break points they reached will be match points.

:14:22. > :14:23.That is never fun. To serve when you are going match points in the final

:14:24. > :15:43.set. Just a little delay in the rhythm.

:15:44. > :17:25.The pressure is at its maximum. That can contribute to moments like that.

:17:26. > :17:42.Good reactions. Also some clean living. Beyond belief. Yes, he

:17:43. > :18:03.wasn't there, just stuck his racket out of the last second. Nice step.

:18:04. > :18:10.You just wonder whether the problem he has been having with his legs and

:18:11. > :18:15.is the fourth set and the mass outing and just above his knee and

:18:16. > :18:19.his quad, if you can keep here serving, maybe he is not getting up

:18:20. > :18:33.as much as he was earlier in the match. Yes, and of course the left

:18:34. > :18:41.knee is the one that does all of the jumping. You jump on the left knee

:18:42. > :19:20.and land on it so it is taking some punishment.

:19:21. > :19:28.That was a good serve. 101 on the second serve. Melo clearly was

:19:29. > :19:59.distracted by the move that Pavic made.

:20:00. > :20:09.Kubot has got the bit between his teeth. He has had the luxury of

:20:10. > :20:15.getting a few more second serves. Melo if he can find something hell

:20:16. > :20:20.is going to increase the pressure on this man exponentially. He is

:20:21. > :20:28.struggling to find first serves. He desperately wants a free point.

:20:29. > :20:29.Thing is getting very complicated. I was going to say, he is taking a

:20:30. > :21:10.long time. Brilliantly read by Kubot. Nice

:21:11. > :21:41.creativity when he got there. The short forehand is good in theory

:21:42. > :21:56.perhaps but in practice did not get the job done.

:21:57. > :22:00.He may well look to the heavens. That was much closer than he

:22:01. > :22:52.intended it to be. Both teams have been here already at

:22:53. > :22:59.this tournament, deep into a fifth set. But this has the extra

:23:00. > :23:04.incentive and the extra pressure of having a Wimbledon title attached to

:23:05. > :23:09.it, whoever comes out on top in the end, and Kubot and Melo are

:23:10. > :23:12.potentially very close to winning this. More work ahead of them on

:23:13. > :23:33.serve. You get the feeling that most of the

:23:34. > :23:40.10,000 people still left in Centre Court have invested three and a half

:23:41. > :24:21.hours in this match and now is the payback.

:24:22. > :24:28.He has made it. That is just outrageous. The pace that he hit it

:24:29. > :24:59.with coupled with the angle. What a pick-up from Melo. That was a

:25:00. > :25:23.great move. That was lovely doubles. Rather than committing his weight

:25:24. > :25:29.forward he held his balance so he could move one way or the other.

:25:30. > :26:25.Just so much fun to watch. Great angle from Melo, just taking

:26:26. > :26:28.the racket out of Marach's hands. It has been his best serve, that one

:26:29. > :26:52.out wide, the backhand side. That does not augur well for us

:26:53. > :26:59.getting home tonight. At 11pm. We will be postponed and have to come

:27:00. > :27:04.back tomorrow. Think how well the other team had served when you think

:27:05. > :27:07.about the last game be played and the length of it and they had to

:27:08. > :27:11.endure before safely coming through in the end. They will be looking for

:27:12. > :27:51.something a little less problematic here.

:27:52. > :28:00.Apologises but would love three more of these. If the tennis gods are on

:28:01. > :29:18.his side, who is he to argue? This is the moment they have been

:29:19. > :29:27.working for and patiently waiting for. Produced by some wonderful

:29:28. > :29:35.returns. The first helped by good fortune. The last couple have been

:29:36. > :29:38.absolutely sensational. It is two championship points for Kubot and

:29:39. > :30:15.Marach. Heart in the mouth for both sides.

:30:16. > :30:23.Could Melo have done any more with the shot before that. Don't believe

:30:24. > :30:49.he had that much time. A courageous second serve, as well.

:30:50. > :30:55.If they had more of a chance on the first one, there was no chance for

:30:56. > :31:41.Kubot on that. The perfect delivery. What an end to a game that had

:31:42. > :31:45.everything in it. Quality all the way through, championship points,

:31:46. > :31:54.but, ultimately, another hold of serve. And how positively will Kubot

:31:55. > :33:10.and Melo react? UMPIRE: Mr Kubot challenging the

:33:11. > :34:29.call. The ball was called out. Two I'd definitely better than one

:34:30. > :34:35.of them, two racquets were better, they shovelled the back cover, in

:34:36. > :34:39.fact, it was Kubot who managed to get his string onto the ball, they

:34:40. > :34:44.both went for it, he was all over the place. -- shovelled it back

:34:45. > :34:58.over. So much raw emotion in these

:34:59. > :35:04.moments, so many different stories to get through, so money stages of

:35:05. > :35:37.winning major titles. -- so many stages.

:35:38. > :35:48.The shoe is on the other foot, Kubot is feeling the pressure.

:35:49. > :35:53.They are going to get a warning here also, if they are not careful. There

:35:54. > :36:12.has been a long time between points. Kubot responding in a similar

:36:13. > :36:16.fashion as Pavic in the previous game, although with a championship

:36:17. > :36:22.point staring him in the face, he delivered an ace. Bringing the best

:36:23. > :36:57.out of each other. One of the biggest stages, if not

:36:58. > :37:03.the biggest stage in the world and everything on the line. And those

:37:04. > :37:11.last two players, Kubot and Pavic, in the service games, have produced

:37:12. > :37:21.some fantastic serving. And we continue to be enthralled by this

:37:22. > :37:34.Men's Doubles final. Kubot electing to not even sit down. Aidan Turner

:37:35. > :37:36.and Bartoli continuing to talk about many of the permutations that could

:37:37. > :38:01.still occur here. Virginia Wade. Continuing to witness

:38:02. > :38:05.this drama unfolding. Barracudas struggled in his previous game, he

:38:06. > :38:13.will be looking for a few more free points. Which he does not get on the

:38:14. > :39:19.opening point of the game. One of the best backhand returns the final.

:39:20. > :39:28.It looked like he had quite a bit of time, he was onto that forehand.

:39:29. > :39:37.That was a time to play, to see how nervous your opponent is right now.

:39:38. > :39:41.Like you said before, it does not matter how hard, he will still lose

:39:42. > :39:54.the point is, pulled out in, see what happens. -- pull it in.

:39:55. > :40:25.Well, that is a full-blooded swing, that return, he connected perfectly

:40:26. > :40:43.and that beats Pavic as he crosses perfectly.

:40:44. > :41:33.Calm as you like. There is ice in his veins.

:41:34. > :41:39.Well, one continues to wonder what the catalyst for victory will be for

:41:40. > :41:50.either of these teams, over one hour has gone in the final set alone.

:41:51. > :41:54.Four hours, ticking over. And we are kept guessing. Who will be the

:41:55. > :44:05.victor is out here? -- victors. Kubot apologises and he apologises

:44:06. > :44:12.for a long time. They are playing in good spirit, in this final and Pavic

:44:13. > :44:17.was right, that ball was travelling out but it was travelling at to

:44:18. > :44:22.quickly apace. To get out of the way. It certainly got a lot cooler

:44:23. > :44:28.than it was in the middle of the day and also a lot darker, we are about

:44:29. > :44:33.ten minutes past eight in the evening and blankets are being

:44:34. > :44:39.passed around in the Royal box. We need some of them down here! I am

:44:40. > :44:44.just wondering at what stage they will make a decision in terms of

:44:45. > :44:55.closing the roof and putting the lights on and all that. On a clear

:44:56. > :45:01.day,... Nine o'clock? But it is not clear at all today. Therefore, it

:45:02. > :45:08.might be closer to half past eight. I was on court to when Curry was

:45:09. > :45:14.playing Jo Wilfried Tsonga and at a quarter past eight on a nice

:45:15. > :45:19.evening, we thought this will we get done tonight, added five minutes to

:45:20. > :45:23.nine, it was much too dark. There will be some discussions about what

:45:24. > :45:26.to do. Maybe one of these teams will take the decision out of their

:45:27. > :46:59.hands. Deft touch. That bounced like

:47:00. > :47:03.sandbag! It is amazing how close to the net... Almost leaning over.

:47:04. > :48:55.Right on top of the net. He had a few ciders, but with that

:48:56. > :49:01.motion, you question whether that will stack up on a break point, it

:49:02. > :49:08.is a very flat trajectory and for the most part it does work. But if

:49:09. > :49:19.Marach and Pavic can get themselves to that break point situation, it

:49:20. > :49:25.might just crack. -- a few sighters. It has dropped in. It looked like

:49:26. > :49:30.they were out of trouble and that was a miraculous pick-up from Kubot.

:49:31. > :49:39.He just did not do enough of that. The back edge.

:49:40. > :49:57.And backs to the wall stuff for Kubot and Melo.

:49:58. > :50:10.What a point he played there! His nerves! The first volley, I think,

:50:11. > :50:27.was quite deep. And that was also very deep.

:50:28. > :50:39.Inspirational play. Three break points. The first one is saved in

:50:40. > :50:41.routine fashion but there is nothing routine about the situation they

:50:42. > :51:10.find themselves in. That is a stunning serve. Credit to

:51:11. > :51:15.Kubot, the weather Pavic is playing, that felt like it was the only way

:51:16. > :51:27.they could where they could win the point, just not allowing them to

:51:28. > :51:38.touch it. -- the way that Pavic is playing.

:51:39. > :51:46.That is great serving. Just questioning whether the technique

:51:47. > :52:38.would hold up, they answered that affirmatively.

:52:39. > :52:50.That second service lacked just a bit of nerve, into the middle of the

:52:51. > :53:25.box. And Pavic had a wonderful return, back at his feet.

:53:26. > :53:33.Well, it was good scrambling but he was never really in the point after

:53:34. > :53:36.the return and again, credit to Kubot are finding that terrific

:53:37. > :54:18.first serve when he needed it the most. -- for finding.

:54:19. > :54:25.I am not sure what happened. It was nowhere near the line. It didn't

:54:26. > :54:47.come through, as he expected it. UMPIRE: Time violation warning,

:54:48. > :55:04.Kubot and Melo. Quite right. Break points have come and gone. And Kubot

:55:05. > :55:08.and Melo hang on. Now, legitimately, both teams feel they could be

:55:09. > :55:16.Wimbledon champions, no matter what way this end -- this ends up going,

:55:17. > :55:22.that was courage under fire, Kubot and Bella. Finding that ace at

:55:23. > :55:31.15-40. Returning spectacularly well, he was back in the groove. Once

:55:32. > :55:38.again, Kubot just not wanting to sit down and he is keeping himself warm.

:55:39. > :55:41.Rod Laver will enjoy what he is watching. He knows what it takes to

:55:42. > :55:49.play with courage when your back is against the wall. To play your best

:55:50. > :55:52.tennis when everyone else, including yourself, is potentially doubting

:55:53. > :55:57.it. This is unknown territory for both teams, they have never even

:55:58. > :56:01.played each other before. No one here has a Wimbledon title to their

:56:02. > :57:22.name and they desperately seek one of them.

:57:23. > :57:32.Nice volleying. Unfortunately, their opponents cover every inch of the

:57:33. > :58:16.court. That was a good follow. Full

:58:17. > :58:25.stretch, Billy Strong, nudging that one. As soon as March held his

:58:26. > :58:58.ground, he was in trouble. -- really strong.

:58:59. > :59:08.Pavic, just in front of us, starting to flex his left leg or his left

:59:09. > :59:10.hip, I do not know whether he tweaked that or if he was in some

:59:11. > :59:26.degree of pain... Neither team has flinched in the

:59:27. > :59:41.final set. It took a long time to develop the

:59:42. > :00:10.last half set has been fascinating. There was nothing on that serve at

:00:11. > :01:18.all. Against that grimace, he has to

:01:19. > :01:25.serve next, he would dearly love to do that with a break in the bank as

:01:26. > :01:30.well. He may not get that luxury. He has not always find that accuracy

:01:31. > :01:32.down the T, but he did that time, when he needed that the most, great

:01:33. > :01:56.response from Melo. He struggles on the backhand side,

:01:57. > :02:02.if you get in there with pace, he can almost always only go down the

:02:03. > :02:10.line or inside the doubles line, but Melo is once again directing the

:02:11. > :02:11.traffic at a decent velocity, 117 out wide and the 0-30 lead has

:02:12. > :03:34.vanished. Courage, calmness and precision on

:03:35. > :03:40.serve from Melo, he digs his team out of trouble, that was a lightning

:03:41. > :03:45.start from Pavic in that game and look at that, they are not dead even

:03:46. > :03:49.on the scoreboard but in terms of total points one. And again, we

:03:50. > :03:55.continue to wonder and wait to see what the difference will be. It is

:03:56. > :04:02.amazing to think that as a team, March and Pavic have yet to win any

:04:03. > :04:06.title together. They have individually, but not together and,

:04:07. > :04:15.well, if they were to do it here, in the circumstances, it would be quite

:04:16. > :04:21.something. I wonder if they have thought about closing the roof,

:04:22. > :04:27.producing, I would think. Half past eight at night, we certainly do not

:04:28. > :04:41.have that much more good light to play, there is no blue sky.

:04:42. > :04:49.With it so finely balanced here, it would take a brave decision to stop

:04:50. > :04:54.it right now, for shore. They will have to go to the last second and

:04:55. > :05:29.hope against hope somehow it finishes.

:05:30. > :05:36.Getting those second serves in the strike zone. Melo. Middle of the

:05:37. > :06:40.net. And still they continued to

:06:41. > :06:42.entertain. A good move in from Melo, keeping the ball low, but great

:06:43. > :07:37.vision here from Marach. He said it is not the same, it is

:07:38. > :08:35.not the same when it is not sunny. They want it to close now, I think.

:08:36. > :08:44.As tough as it is to pick up the serve, as the light fades, it is

:08:45. > :08:47.perhaps even tougher to pick up the first volley when it comes back at

:08:48. > :09:01.that pace. Both teams are suffering a little bit here.

:09:02. > :09:50.Did they get the signals wrong? They must have.

:09:51. > :10:02.Both guys moving in the same direction. Yes. Just kicked in at 96

:10:03. > :10:06.mph, giving extra time to get the racket through the shot and drag it

:10:07. > :11:21.back crosscourt. Blanket coverage of the match

:11:22. > :11:27.continues. 11-10 in the final set. STUDIO: We will cover this live on

:11:28. > :11:34.BBC Two. The lights can come on after the roof closes and it can

:11:35. > :11:40.continue until 11pm. The longest men's final was 19-17. The

:11:41. > :11:47.tournament referee is chatting to the players to see whether they can

:11:48. > :11:51.keep going for another two games. If they can, they will try to get the

:11:52. > :11:55.match concluded and then close the roof. There is another final to come

:11:56. > :12:02.after this, the ladies' doubles final. Today at Wimbledon will not

:12:03. > :12:07.be happening but we will try in the gaps between the matches to bring

:12:08. > :12:13.the highlights of the fabulous singles final between the women.

:12:14. > :12:18.Garbine Muguruza and Venus Williams. But this match continues so I hand

:12:19. > :12:23.you over to Mark Petchey, Peter Fleming and John Lloyd.

:12:24. > :12:30.The gentleman on the court having a word with the umpire, you sense it

:12:31. > :12:36.might have been a precursor for this game to be the final one before the

:12:37. > :12:45.roof is shut and the lights come on. It is 8:37pm.

:12:46. > :12:57.But, who knows? That may be the start of something special here for

:12:58. > :13:27.Kubot and Melo. He was there. He tried to cut it as

:13:28. > :14:01.finely as possible over the top of the dart-macro to keep it alone.

:14:02. > :14:11.Such a good move from Pavic. His forehand return has been down the

:14:12. > :14:14.line, but he had the courage to cut off the crosscourt return after the

:14:15. > :14:45.Brazilian hit a pretty good one. And there he is again. Alert and

:14:46. > :15:27.agile after over four and a half hours.

:15:28. > :15:44.And this is it, isn't it? Yes. You would expect the players to leave

:15:45. > :15:50.the court while this happens. UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, play

:15:51. > :16:03.is suspended for approximately ten minutes while the roof is closed.

:16:04. > :16:10.STUDIO: While the roof closes let us take this opportunity to recapture

:16:11. > :16:16.on a wonderful day of tennis. We have to go back to 1908 since a

:16:17. > :16:24.37-year-old won the ladies' championship, Charlotte Cooper

:16:25. > :16:27.Sterry stop Venus Williams was trying to emulate her, playing

:16:28. > :16:34.Garbine Muguruza, 14 years her junior. Would age, experience or

:16:35. > :16:39.youth win the day? You reach the last round and feel,

:16:40. > :16:47.what I am doing is right. I have a lot to give. I am a glass half full

:16:48. > :16:51.kind of person. It is 50-50, the chances. I have another opportunity

:16:52. > :16:56.and have to do my best with it. It is not over till it's over. It was

:16:57. > :17:00.the ninth time Venus had taken this walk. She did not look at pictures

:17:01. > :17:03.of herself on the walls. She knows how to cope with days like these,

:17:04. > :17:18.how to win matches like this. For Muguruza, a

:17:19. > :17:20.second Wimbledon final. Last time she said it went by so fast against

:17:21. > :17:23.the younger Williams. Venus makes the most of time. She delayed a few

:17:24. > :17:26.moments, as if to emphasise she is the queen around here. The wait was

:17:27. > :17:50.worth it because what followed was truly extraordinary.

:17:51. > :17:58.And again, come the big moments in big games, the noise increases and

:17:59. > :17:59.the powerless. The decibels level went up. Brilliant hitting from

:18:00. > :18:26.both. It was well long and she is trying

:18:27. > :18:28.to impose her will and presence, Williams. She knows the pressure

:18:29. > :18:43.Muguruza is under. Forehand error again from the

:18:44. > :19:20.Spaniard. Williams two points away. And a mistake, again, and it is the

:19:21. > :19:21.first serve of Muguruza that has disappeared and gives Williams the

:19:22. > :20:09.two set points. And a rally in. She could not do it

:20:10. > :20:15.at the end and Muguruza holds firm. Still one more to go. Clearly, Venus

:20:16. > :20:19.was targeting the forehand. As she should. Muguruza impressively held

:20:20. > :20:35.steady. What a time to find that first serve

:20:36. > :21:01.again from Muguruza. There was a sigh of relief.

:21:02. > :21:26.The forehand worked well in that rally for Muguruza.

:21:27. > :21:36.And that is how to stand up to set points. Muguruza played so well.

:21:37. > :22:27.They know how important that was. Not afraid of a double fault, it is

:22:28. > :22:42.part of her game. But it does put the pressure on.

:22:43. > :22:55.I think she is going to challenge. Yes. And a big moment. It is worth

:22:56. > :23:04.challenging. My goodness! It is not even close! The linesman today are

:23:05. > :23:11.tighter than the players. Everyone is feeling the pressure.

:23:12. > :23:21.She fell on her heels and lost her balance. When you get nervous, your

:23:22. > :23:42.feet sometimes get tangled and that is what happened there.

:23:43. > :23:53.Both players struggling on the forehand side. Suddenly, from having

:23:54. > :24:02.two set points in the previous game, Williams is facing break point.

:24:03. > :24:10.Wow. This is a nervy game for both players. They both have the same

:24:11. > :24:32.weakness at the moment, the fragility in their forehand.

:24:33. > :24:46.There will be another chance for Garbine Muguruza.

:24:47. > :25:28.First blood to Garbine Muguruza. And William suddenly looks a little bit

:25:29. > :25:43.weaker. Muguruza still has two survey it out, but what a position

:25:44. > :26:07.she is aided in this final. -- she has to serve it out.

:26:08. > :26:18.Wow. That is tremendous from Venus and the movement to get up to it

:26:19. > :26:25.quickly and time it so well. Indecisive on this one. It was very

:26:26. > :26:58.tough. Down at Muguruza's feet. The crowd gasp as they thought

:26:59. > :27:05.Muguruza went long. But she gets away with it. She had control in the

:27:06. > :27:21.first part of the set, but now hers has gone off.

:27:22. > :27:33.She went for it on the final forehand, Williams, but it is

:27:34. > :27:36.Muguruza getting closer. They are very physical rallies. The movement,

:27:37. > :28:04.the explosive first step. How did she get that ball? It could

:28:05. > :28:08.be the shot of the set. For all the world, Venus Williams was in control

:28:09. > :28:09.of the rally and then she bowed her head as she watched this land in the

:28:10. > :28:33.corner. Two set points for Muguruza. Still fighting. Venus had two set

:28:34. > :29:16.points earlier. Muguruza one left. And Muguruza has the first set in

:29:17. > :29:21.this final. STUDIO: Muguruza saving set points

:29:22. > :29:27.and taking the set 7-5. We're going back to centre core for live tennis

:29:28. > :29:31.because the final of the men's doubles has just resumed. We can be

:29:32. > :29:36.join Mark Petchey, Fleming, and John Lloyd.

:29:37. > :29:44.It was a quick warm up. No real warm up, to be honest. So difficult

:29:45. > :29:50.perhaps for the players off the return straightaway. They came up,

:29:51. > :30:49.warmed up their serve and got on with it.

:30:50. > :30:55.The ball boy tripping up over the canvas towards a photographer, who

:30:56. > :31:11.threw it back. It hit the front of his lens.

:31:12. > :31:19.A strange start on the restart. For next week's was number one, Marcelo

:31:20. > :31:31.Melo. 100 minutes this final set has taken

:31:32. > :31:35.already. One wonders how deep into the evening we can go. We have

:31:36. > :31:45.another couple of hours this could've feasibly go. Melo did well

:31:46. > :31:51.on that game. The resumption is always difficult. But he served

:31:52. > :31:55.well. Some good volleys from his partner to back him up and now

:31:56. > :31:59.pressure switches to the other side of the court. And I would say

:32:00. > :32:09.another couple of hours is highly feasible. It has a tendency, the

:32:10. > :32:10.roof, to make things slower at times and I wonder if that will help both

:32:11. > :33:00.teams. To create more opportunities. Slotted it into the space with

:33:01. > :33:07.precision. And then moved in behind it. He has done that a few times. A

:33:08. > :34:10.good start to the game. Unbelievable fortune for Melo. Not

:34:11. > :34:22.even trying to disguise how happy he is about it. They had a couple of

:34:23. > :34:38.championship points earlier in the set. They will have three more now.

:34:39. > :34:50.What a remarkable victory for Melo and Kubot. Winning Wimbledon for the

:34:51. > :35:03.first time as a team and in quite simply astonishing fashion.

:35:04. > :35:10.We thought the match could go along into the night. The celebration is

:35:11. > :35:17.certainly well. He is world number one once next week. He has already

:35:18. > :35:26.have that number next to his name once before in 2015 and 2016. Kubot,

:35:27. > :35:33.who won the Australian Open in 2014, is now the Wimbledon champion. And

:35:34. > :35:36.Melo adds to his title in Roland Garros will stop but let's spare a

:35:37. > :35:42.thought for the other two players in this magnificent final who end up

:35:43. > :35:48.the runners up, who played more than their fair share in the drama that

:35:49. > :36:00.unfolded over the last four hours and 41 minutes. Those are not tears

:36:01. > :36:04.of joy under their 4-3. -- Pavic. But what a performance from the

:36:05. > :36:12.Croatian and the Austrian. What a resumption. Did they lose a point on

:36:13. > :36:17.the resumption? Did Melo lose one point on his serve? Spectacular

:36:18. > :36:18.serving and then even more dynamic returning to break and win the

:36:19. > :36:35.title. Fabulous scenes there were Lukasz

:36:36. > :36:46.Kubot and Marcelo Melo. We will be back to see the trophy presentation

:36:47. > :36:52.later on. We will be showing, the single's final. We were updating you

:36:53. > :36:56.on what happened earlier on the final during the final of the

:36:57. > :37:26.Ladies' Singles final. I am so impressed with the weight

:37:27. > :37:31.Muguruza was able to stay so positive and find her forehand

:37:32. > :37:35.again. Because that is what she has been struggling with since winning

:37:36. > :37:40.the French. It has been a little bit more erratic and inconsistent. That

:37:41. > :37:41.is what stood out during these championships. Much more reliable

:37:42. > :38:03.ground strokes. No sign of any lack of power at the

:38:04. > :38:13.start of the second set from Venus Williams.

:38:14. > :38:34.An interested observer somewhere in the world will be Serena Williams.

:38:35. > :38:43.Maybe she can't bear to watch it live, she will watch it on tape

:38:44. > :38:45.later. She might not want to watch it if it continues to go the way of

:38:46. > :39:15.the Spaniard. Just cannot afford to miss neutral

:39:16. > :39:32.balls like that. Right at the start of the second

:39:33. > :39:55.set, Venus Williams in all sorts of trouble.

:39:56. > :40:07.Blistering back and says Venus Williams on that occasion. Some

:40:08. > :40:20.heavy hitting from both players here at the moment.

:40:21. > :40:26.Too many mistakes from Venus Williams at the moment. Too deep in

:40:27. > :40:30.the court. Muguruza is controlling court position here. As hard as

:40:31. > :40:48.Williams is hitting it. Challenge from Muguruza. A big

:40:49. > :41:00.decision for our virtual friends. Good challenge. She shook her head

:41:01. > :41:08.emphatically. It is a huge turn of events from an ace to losing your

:41:09. > :41:20.serve. Gabine Muguruza it is firmly in control of this final now.

:41:21. > :41:34.That is lovely from Venus Williams. That was a difficult half-volley.

:41:35. > :41:47.Beautiful hands and feel to gently caress that. I don't know if it is

:41:48. > :41:54.physical or she's lost a bit of spirit, but she doesn't seem to have

:41:55. > :42:06.as much energy, Williams. Some uncomfortable speeds to deal with.

:42:07. > :42:12.The winners, the energy coming from Muguruza now. The energy coming from

:42:13. > :42:17.the Spaniard is tiring out Venus Williams at the moment. I don't see

:42:18. > :42:29.a whole lot emanating from the American's side.

:42:30. > :42:40.This is a must hold, can't go down the double break.

:42:41. > :42:59.Too good. This match is slipping away from Venus Williams. Muguruza

:43:00. > :43:28.is plain wonderful tennis. Break point again.

:43:29. > :43:32.And Muguruza housing, has the double break. Surely has one hand on this

:43:33. > :43:49.trophy? -- has it. Suddenly this court, where she has

:43:50. > :44:13.had so much success must be a very dark place.

:44:14. > :44:26.24 unforced errors now. Just 11 from Muguruza.

:44:27. > :44:36.It is painful to watch if you are a supporter of Venus Williams. But she

:44:37. > :44:43.is wilting here. Woody Harrelson, watching on. Anyway, three break

:44:44. > :44:48.points for Garbine Muguruza. And the crowd, trying to lift their

:44:49. > :45:02.favourite, this great champion. She is in a very deep hole.

:45:03. > :45:10.And the end surely is coming quickly. Muguruza with a

:45:11. > :45:16.stranglehold on this match. It not over yet, but Williams already looks

:45:17. > :45:20.a beaten figure. Garbine Muguruza, to step out onto Centre Court, to

:45:21. > :45:34.serve for the Ladies' Singles championship.

:45:35. > :45:48.Goodness. You want to see this title taken, you don't want to see a meek

:45:49. > :46:04.surrender. I think we are seeing both. The

:46:05. > :46:12.combination is going to make it six love in the second.

:46:13. > :46:20.Everything is with her now and there is noise inside Centre Court, but

:46:21. > :46:38.just one more point for Garbine Muguruza and it will all be hers.

:46:39. > :46:50.It might end on this. The umpire says it's good, so the challenge. I

:46:51. > :47:14.hope it doesn't end this way. It doesn't, so we will play again.

:47:15. > :48:05.We will have to wait just a little bit longer. Two more chances.

:48:06. > :48:19.This challenge might end this way. We look to the challenge, we look to

:48:20. > :48:24.the screen. Garbine Muguruza, if it is long she is the champion. It is

:48:25. > :48:30.and it is a sorry way for this final two end, but what a victory for

:48:31. > :48:34.Garbine Muguruza. She is the Wimbledon champion and tears of this

:48:35. > :48:41.spare a couple of beers ago as she lost to Serena Williams. But

:48:42. > :48:48.overwhelming joy now as she is the champion. And the sad end to Venus

:48:49. > :48:53.Williams who played so well throughout this championship and

:48:54. > :48:57.promised so much. But all the smiles belonged to Garbine Muguruza, the

:48:58. > :49:04.moment is hers, the title belongs to the Spaniard.

:49:05. > :49:14.A day to savour but Garbine Muguruza. She said she was

:49:15. > :49:20.determined to enjoy this moment. And lifting the Venus rose water dish

:49:21. > :49:25.and seeing her name. And look at how many times it says Williams, either

:49:26. > :49:32.Serena or Venus. It is rare for anybody else to live this trophy.

:49:33. > :49:36.She came out to packed crowds on the balcony. Unfortunately, they took

:49:37. > :49:41.the trophy away from her. She said it was all too soon. She hadn't had

:49:42. > :49:48.time to hold it in her hands for long enough. Only the second

:49:49. > :49:53.Spaniard since Conchita Martinez in 1994 to win Wimbledon. And there is

:49:54. > :49:56.the woman who has helped her through this fortnight. She has come through

:49:57. > :50:01.with the loss of only one set and the only person to beat Venus

:50:02. > :50:06.Williams six love in a set here at Wimbledon. The trophy presentation

:50:07. > :50:19.has been happening but the Men's Doubles. The Duke of Kent, President

:50:20. > :50:30.of the All-England Club and executive, making the presentation

:50:31. > :50:35.to Kubot from Poland and Melo from Brazil. On the presentation has

:50:36. > :50:40.happened but the Girls' Singles champion and for the first time in

:50:41. > :50:48.25 years it has been won by an American. The third seed who beat

:50:49. > :50:51.her fellow American. Clare lives the trophy and very shortly, on centre,

:50:52. > :50:59.there is still another final to come, because we will be showing the

:51:00. > :51:04.final of the Ladies' Doubles final. The roof is now close. On centre,

:51:05. > :51:10.those players will be appearing shortly. We can find out what Venus

:51:11. > :51:16.Williams said after her defeat in the final. Venus, commiserations,

:51:17. > :51:22.how would you sum up the challenge posed by Garbine Muguruza today? I

:51:23. > :51:28.have never played her on grass, so it was a different experience. She

:51:29. > :51:31.played really well. It was a wonderful two weeks for me. I don't

:51:32. > :51:36.have any complaints, she played amazing. Do you think we

:51:37. > :51:43.underestimated just how difficult it would be to win a Grand Slam title

:51:44. > :51:46.at the age of 37? I am thinking more about what I need to accomplish, I

:51:47. > :51:57.don't necessarily think what other people think. Or your age? Not at

:51:58. > :52:00.all. You had to set points which is very high quality and very

:52:01. > :52:09.competitive, at the end of the first set, what do you remember? I try to

:52:10. > :52:13.win those points, obviously. She played some amazing tennis. I would

:52:14. > :52:18.like to have had more opportunities in the match, but she played

:52:19. > :52:22.amazing, so I give her a lot of credit. The two sets were very

:52:23. > :52:28.different, where you feeling very tired in the second set? I felt I

:52:29. > :52:34.went for a little bit too much. You have to go for it, so I don't have

:52:35. > :52:37.any regrets. Do you think the exertions of the last fortnight have

:52:38. > :52:41.caught up with you? Every match is different and you give your best

:52:42. > :52:49.effort and like I said, she played very well. Two grand slam finals

:52:50. > :52:54.this year, I must assume you are very proud of your achievement? It

:52:55. > :53:00.is great tennis this year, I look forward to the next major and giving

:53:01. > :53:07.it my best shot. Is your appetite still as great as ever? I love the

:53:08. > :53:12.game, sometimes it is wins and losses, mostly wins, so there will

:53:13. > :53:16.be more. We will see you next year. Thank you.

:53:17. > :53:23.Venus Williams has been coming here for 20 years and is not ruling it

:53:24. > :53:26.out coming back next year. She will be 38 next year. The women

:53:27. > :53:32.contesting the Ladies' Doubles finals, are walking out. Garbine

:53:33. > :53:36.Muguruza becomes the first person ever to beat both Williams sisters

:53:37. > :53:43.to win a grand slam title, having won the French and Wimbledon at well

:53:44. > :53:49.and 23 she has many great years ahead of her. But Venus, not saying

:53:50. > :53:52.this will be her last Wimbledon. She very much still wants to come back

:53:53. > :53:58.and who knows, Serena may be back again next year. The first set was

:53:59. > :54:04.populous tennis, it was so powerful, so full of pace and amazing accuracy

:54:05. > :54:09.and then Venus, it was like the battery ran out in the second set.

:54:10. > :54:15.Garbine Muguruza, won the Ladies' Singles for Spain. If you have tuned

:54:16. > :54:19.in to watch in margin with Alan Yentob, that will follow the tennis,

:54:20. > :54:23.but we are in for a late finish because we still have the final of

:54:24. > :54:29.the Ladies' Doubles to come. I shall handed over to David Mercer and Liz

:54:30. > :54:33.Smiley to tell you about it. The pair in your picture are only

:54:34. > :54:43.playing their second tournament together. Their first was at

:54:44. > :54:51.Eastbourne the week before. They lost in the first round. Liz Smiley,

:54:52. > :54:57.the doubles champion here with Kathy Jordan, they have done better this

:54:58. > :54:59.time? They are up against one of the best teams in women's tennis these

:55:00. > :55:36.days. You might have just picked up the

:55:37. > :55:40.umpire saying angel. That is the anglicised name she is commonly

:55:41. > :55:55.known as. That is the name by which he likes to be called. Here are the

:55:56. > :56:19.Olympic champions,. They were the champions at Roland

:56:20. > :56:24.Garros in 2013 and at the US Open. The following year, they were both

:56:25. > :56:34.ranked number three in the world. They very seldom play with other

:56:35. > :56:40.partners. Elena Vesnina got married last year and her maid of honour is

:56:41. > :56:47.her doubles partner. They have never won here at Wimbledon. They were

:56:48. > :56:53.runner-up in 2015 and runner-up at the French as well. They are looking

:56:54. > :57:11.for their first Wimbledon doubles title.

:57:12. > :57:31.Slightly older at 30. Her partner is 29. Chan, 23 years of age.

:57:32. > :57:41.It's not surprisingly is two teams have not played against each other,

:57:42. > :57:46.given the fact that this is only their second event together. It is

:57:47. > :57:53.interesting they have just gelled immediately. You see that sometimes

:57:54. > :57:57.the doubles pairings, they don't have to play for a long time to

:57:58. > :57:59.understand each other or where their partner is hitting the ball, they

:58:00. > :58:20.have an chemistry. Ekaterina Makarova, the grand slam

:58:21. > :58:27.titles won with her partner today. It is an impressive record. In the

:58:28. > :58:38.majors they have reached the finals of all of them. They would love to

:58:39. > :58:50.make it three the night. Ten doubles title for Katarina. A few more for a

:58:51. > :59:01.Elena Vesnina. She has won 16 doubles titles. And of course, those

:59:02. > :59:03.two majors. They have both won Mixed Doubles grand slam titles with the

:59:04. > :59:19.same man, Bruno Soares. Nine wins as a team, one win in 2007

:59:20. > :59:27.and this is the route to the final, just losing the one set in the

:59:28. > :59:34.quarterfinals. One break in each set of that particular match. It was

:59:35. > :59:44.very tough. The Australians themselves have been runners-up. The

:59:45. > :00:03.Australians reached three grand slam finals and lost the lot in 2013.

:00:04. > :00:10.Here is angel, born in Taipei. Has won 12 doubles titles, nine with her

:00:11. > :00:15.sister. But she was playing with Martina Hingis and they were playing

:00:16. > :00:29.with the number one seeds in this event. Monica Niculescu is an

:00:30. > :00:30.unusual player on the tour, she will play particularly on the forehand

:00:31. > :00:54.and an exaggerated slice forehand. She doesn't have any grand slam

:00:55. > :01:04.titles. Her world ranking is 25. This is their route, little bit

:01:05. > :01:10.different than the semifinal. They ended up winning 9-7 in the third

:01:11. > :01:15.set, two other matches went the distance. They have not faced a

:01:16. > :01:26.seeded player. They are the ninth seeds.

:01:27. > :01:37.The umpire, one of the full-time officials on the women's WTA to. Lot

:01:38. > :01:53.more aces, you can see from the Russians. One more points but then

:01:54. > :02:08.they have played a lot of you are games. Rather more efficient at

:02:09. > :02:12.converting break points on paper. They are the highest seeds left in

:02:13. > :02:18.the/ when the number one seeds had the defaults.

:02:19. > :02:26.Bethany Matt Dixon and suffered a terrible injury.

:02:27. > :02:32.The top section of the drawer opened up once the number one seeds were

:02:33. > :02:46.gone. The number two seeds, we will see here. I am sure many of the

:02:47. > :02:53.people were queueing the resale tickets. Then they can say, not only

:02:54. > :02:59.did I go to Wimbledon and sat on the Hill, then I saw a Wimbledon final

:03:00. > :03:05.on Centre Court. Wonderful thing for them. Most famous tennis court in

:03:06. > :03:07.the world. There is always a queue of people whose dream it is to watch

:03:08. > :04:03.a final. Tough for all four ladies to have to

:04:04. > :04:04.wait so long that remarkable Men's Doubles going past the four-hour

:04:05. > :04:47.mark. It is all in the timing when you

:04:48. > :04:53.cross and just too much space down there, left a little bit early,

:04:54. > :04:54.Makarova was good enough to hit the forehand up the line. Very solid off

:04:55. > :05:11.the ground. She had shoulder treatment during

:05:12. > :05:46.the semifinal, Chan. You can see why Niculescu and Chan

:05:47. > :05:50.combine well. Excellent volleys from Niculescu at the net. She is always

:05:51. > :06:18.looking to inject herself into the point.

:06:19. > :06:22.If you strike the ball well, there is a lovely resonance under the

:06:23. > :07:46.roof. Perfect conditions. On the full stretch, the return was

:07:47. > :07:47.unable to hit an effective lob. Not a bad idea. Vesnina really closes in

:07:48. > :08:14.on the net. That is why we need to have the

:08:15. > :08:25.lights on and roof closed. That is quite a sunset in the distance. That

:08:26. > :08:29.is a beautiful sight. Red sky at night, Shepherd's delight. Red sky

:08:30. > :09:49.in the morning... Shepherd's warding. -- warning.

:09:50. > :09:59.When you are struggling on serve, 0-30, you love to see your partner

:10:00. > :10:54.doing that for you. There was too much power from

:10:55. > :10:57.Makarova first on the big ground stroke and then on the overhead. The

:10:58. > :11:08.first break point goes to the Olympic champions.

:11:09. > :11:16.Vesnina makes an extraordinary noise when she strikes the ball. It sounds

:11:17. > :11:55.like "hiya". Hello to you. What she lacks in pace, Niculescu,

:11:56. > :12:28.she makes up for with direction. And pinpoint accuracy on the serve.

:12:29. > :12:35.The backhand hits a flat and powerfully. -- was hit so flat and

:12:36. > :13:24.powerfully. Vesnina and Makarova probably

:13:25. > :13:33.thought they had pretty good net position but a screamer up the line

:13:34. > :13:39.from Niculescu. Two break points saved.

:13:40. > :14:06.That was an overall by the umpire. No challenge. -- overrule.

:14:07. > :14:11.That second serve, 71 mph, it was difficult for champ to withstand

:14:12. > :14:41.that pace of shot. -- for Chan. The perfect start for the number two

:14:42. > :14:54.seeds. They have had a long day, the ball

:14:55. > :15:32.kids. Excellent hands from Makarova.

:15:33. > :15:34.Niculescu had worked her way so close to the net, she had no time to

:15:35. > :17:50.react. I do not think there is any other

:17:51. > :17:54.player I can name who is playing today who hits a forehand like

:17:55. > :17:58.Niculescu, and to be able to squeeze that the line, it is such an unusual

:17:59. > :18:29.shot. The favourites justifying their

:18:30. > :18:36.favouritism with this fine start. It is a spectacular sight, the roof at

:18:37. > :18:41.night. We will be spoiled when we have two. One on Centre Court and

:18:42. > :18:46.one on Court Number One. I think that is the London eye in the

:18:47. > :18:50.distance. Mind you, we are still behind the Australian Open, because

:18:51. > :19:03.you have three. We do, but that is OK. It is constant communication

:19:04. > :19:12.between Vesnina and Makarova on the change event, between between

:19:13. > :19:16.points. -- change of ends. Both of them have won two singles titles

:19:17. > :19:27.apiece and they have both won in Eastbourne, one of the lead up

:19:28. > :19:31.championships. Vesnina in 2013 and Makarova in 2010. Makarova ranked as

:19:32. > :20:30.high as number eight in singles and her partner as high as 13.

:20:31. > :20:36.That first serve, 79 mph. That really does put Chan on the back

:20:37. > :20:44.foot immediately, particularly against the hitters like Vesnina and

:20:45. > :20:45.Makarova. I wonder how much the shoulder injury is contributing to

:20:46. > :21:23.the lack of speed. It was just long. Two points for the

:21:24. > :22:42.double break. That is a wonderful angle from Chan.

:22:43. > :22:47.Niculescu is trying to work her way into the point at the net, but she

:22:48. > :22:52.did not needed on that particular occasion. It was a great angle from

:22:53. > :23:28.Chan. Still in trouble, fighting hard to hold.

:23:29. > :23:32.The next shot from Chan was not effective enough. That is easy

:23:33. > :23:45.pickings. Slightly extravagant, I thought,

:23:46. > :24:18.that choice of shot from Vesnina. She thought Vesnina was going to

:24:19. > :24:21.cross. Goes up the line, Chan, but Vesnina was not going anywhere.

:24:22. > :24:44.Fourth break point in this game. terrific poach. Niculescu has to

:24:45. > :24:49.keep doing that, even if she gets burned a couple of times down the

:24:50. > :25:37.line. She have to keep trying to help Chan.

:25:38. > :25:47.Perhaps a little unfair the 4-0 scoreline on Chan and Niculescu.

:25:48. > :26:12.They have fought really hard in the two service games, but no reward.

:26:13. > :26:16.UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, please make sure the flashes off on your

:26:17. > :27:37.cameras. Thank you. That is the problem with the sliced,

:27:38. > :27:40.blocks returned from Niculescu. If she gets it wrong, it is floating

:27:41. > :28:51.high and is easy pickings. And the object is to keep the

:28:52. > :28:55.receivers guessing as to which way the partner will move? Correct and

:28:56. > :29:00.also to pick their spot, be definitive about where they want to

:29:01. > :29:26.hit and do not worry about the person at the net.

:29:27. > :29:37.I cannot imagine it happened to you, but if you are losing 5-0, are you

:29:38. > :29:43.saying to each other, we had better try something different? I think you

:29:44. > :29:49.mentioned the scoreline is probably not an accurate reflection of the

:29:50. > :29:54.quality of the match so far. Niculescu had opportunities to hold

:29:55. > :30:00.as did Chan. But they lack a little bit of power. Certainly not from

:30:01. > :30:05.Chan, but Niculescu, even though she is darting from side to side and is

:30:06. > :30:11.doing her best at the net, her return lacks power and the serve of

:30:12. > :30:15.both of these ladies lacks a bit of power, which gives the Russians

:30:16. > :30:21.advantage because they want to be aggressive both sides. You have to

:30:22. > :30:36.forget about the score at this point and just focus on this game. We have

:30:37. > :31:02.had one love set today, the second set of the singles final.

:31:03. > :31:09.My point about lack of power was illustrated. Niculescu hit the

:31:10. > :31:14.forehand on the line and anybody else who hits that it is probably a

:31:15. > :31:17.winner because you have the whole court, because it does not have

:31:18. > :31:29.pace, the Russians are able to run its down and stay in the point. --

:31:30. > :31:31.run it down. A terrific return and then the classic interception. These

:31:32. > :31:55.two are playing really well. A bit adventurous with that shot, I

:31:56. > :32:40.think. It drops in. They are challenging

:32:41. > :32:44.the decision. Outside edge. Two set points. When things aren't going

:32:45. > :32:54.your way, they just go your way, don't they?

:32:55. > :33:31.STUDIO: Makarova and Vesnina are clearly aware play can not go beyond

:33:32. > :33:35.11pm. Taking the first set 6-0. Earlier in the day we had British

:33:36. > :33:43.winners in the wheelchair doubles final with Gordon Reid and Alfie

:33:44. > :33:51.Hewett beating Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer France. The Frenchman

:33:52. > :33:59.saved four match points before, finally, netting the ball that gave

:34:00. > :34:03.victory. Tomorrow we will have more British interest, because in the

:34:04. > :34:07.women's doubles finals, Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain teams up

:34:08. > :34:13.with her doubles partner and we will show you that from the 11am live on

:34:14. > :34:17.BBC Two. A great crowd on Court Number 3, the first time the

:34:18. > :34:22.wheelchair finals have been staged there and about 2000 people packed

:34:23. > :34:26.in to see it and as you can see, thousands left at Wimbledon, as the

:34:27. > :34:34.clock ticks past 10pm and we live with the final of the ladies'

:34:35. > :34:37.doubles. Makarova and Vesnina taking the first set 6-0. We can rejoin

:34:38. > :34:48.David Mercer. Almost the perfect set.

:34:49. > :34:55.Overambitious on a fume shots, the Olympic champions.

:34:56. > :36:52.Oh yes! Mixing the power with finesse. It started with the Vesnina

:36:53. > :37:51.lob. They haven't put a foot wrong, the Russian pair.

:37:52. > :38:02.Makarova and Vesnina pick up the second set where they left the

:38:03. > :38:10.first. Let's see who opens proceedings here serving. It'll be

:38:11. > :38:12.Niculescu. They are changing ends. Niculescu served from the other end

:38:13. > :38:35.in the first set. Too early. Way too early from Chan.

:38:36. > :38:36.All the time in the world for Makarova to hit the ball up the

:38:37. > :39:40.line. It is a bit like a heavyweight

:39:41. > :39:42.against a flyweight at the moment. It is a big problem for them on the

:39:43. > :40:35.serve, both Chan and Niculescu. Much better timing that time. The

:40:36. > :40:36.crowd urging on Chan and Niculescu. They'd love them to get a game, but

:40:37. > :41:47.still facing break point. Slides that slice down the line.

:41:48. > :41:54.When you are playing against a shot like that, you think, she can't keep

:41:55. > :42:07.hitting that up there. But it is her favourite shot of that side.

:42:08. > :43:08.Good variety from the Russians. We have seen some timely lobs from both

:43:09. > :44:04.Makarova and Vesnina. Sitting there waiting for it,

:44:05. > :44:58.Vesnina. As a player, do you start to think

:44:59. > :45:03.about love and love? It is getting quite desperate for Niculescu and

:45:04. > :45:06.her partner, Chan. It is difficult to see where they can change this

:45:07. > :45:11.because they are both struggling with the pace of shot on the serve.

:45:12. > :45:15.Coupled with the fact the Russians are just gaining in confidence,

:45:16. > :45:21.every service game, expecting to either break or at police go close.

:45:22. > :45:26.So that is putting more pressure on. First serve points won just 38%.

:45:27. > :45:43.Second serve points one is worse. I remember Steffi Graf against

:45:44. > :45:54.Natasha 's grave in the French Open, 6-0, 6-0 and I think it was about 36

:45:55. > :46:44.minutes. Steffi Graf could do that to people at her best.

:46:45. > :47:50.She got herself into an awkward position, Niculescu. But just did it

:47:51. > :47:54.just in time. -- adjusted it. Doing its best to get over her left

:47:55. > :48:03.shoulder, Niculescu. Good footwork in the end. There was the chance to

:48:04. > :48:23.get to their first game point of the match.

:48:24. > :49:57.Not willing to give an inch, are they, the Olympic champions?

:49:58. > :50:45.Bay are absolutely determined to be ruthless. So you should in this

:50:46. > :51:00.professional age. The days of giving someone a game have long since gone.

:51:01. > :51:09.I don't know if those days ever existed, did they? I was told by my

:51:10. > :51:14.parents, in the juniors, if you are beating somebody 6-0, you ought to

:51:15. > :53:23.give them again. -- again. Now than! It is like please, can I

:53:24. > :53:25.just win this point. Their first break point, their second game point

:53:26. > :56:04.of the match. As Vesnina urges Makarova to go

:56:05. > :56:08.higher, because that is what it sounds like. The order of play

:56:09. > :56:16.tomorrow, from two o'clock on Centre Court it will be the men's final,

:56:17. > :56:20.Marin Cilic trying to win his first title against Roger Federer trying

:56:21. > :56:28.to win his eighth. We have Jamie Murray playing alongside Martina

:56:29. > :56:33.Hingis and Heather Watson. But coverage starts earlier because from

:56:34. > :56:38.11 o'clock on BBC Two we will be on for the wheelchair doubles final.

:56:39. > :56:42.That features Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain. Let's see if the

:56:43. > :56:51.love, love scoreline can be achieved by the Russian pair.

:56:52. > :58:15.One last chance the Chan and Niculescu to get on the scoreboard.

:58:16. > :58:22.Niculescu is trying everything and so is Chan. To be able to move into

:58:23. > :58:28.the court and take that ball in the air, I think it seems like they can

:58:29. > :58:42.do. They are underpowered and they have

:58:43. > :59:10.been overwhelmed. Two championship points.

:59:11. > :59:24.APPLAUSE A third Grand Slam title than for

:59:25. > :59:35.the Russians. Makarova and Vesnina. They played quite superbly. And a

:59:36. > :59:53.first title here at Wimbledon. And for the opponents, they have got

:59:54. > :00:02.to console themselves by saying, in our second tournament together, have

:00:03. > :00:05.reached the Wimbledon final. STUDIO: Very impressive from

:00:06. > :00:11.Makarova and Vesnina winning 6-0, 6-0 and venting their defeat in the

:00:12. > :00:18.final last year which was at the hands of Venus and Serena Williams.

:00:19. > :00:26.Venus was involved in the Lady single final earlier today and she

:00:27. > :00:29.put up a brave fight, but Garbine Muguruza was ruthless. Venus seemed

:00:30. > :00:36.to run out of energy and she made too many mistakes. Garbine Muguruza

:00:37. > :00:41.went to Hawk-Eye to challenge and the ball was confirmed out and that

:00:42. > :00:46.meant Garbine Muguruza at the age of 23 has won her first Wimbledon title

:00:47. > :00:49.and becomes the first minute to do so since Conchita Martinez since

:00:50. > :00:55.1994 and only the second Spanish woman ever. She holds that aloft as

:00:56. > :01:00.the Wimbledon champion. He will follow in those footsteps tomorrow?

:01:01. > :01:08.It will be either Roger Federer or Marin Cilic. Good night for now.

:01:09. > :01:21.No-one... ..tells us... ..what to choose.

:01:22. > :01:59.Take this island like a dose of medicine

:02:00. > :02:17.Emerging from the mists of afternoon thunderstorms

:02:18. > :02:24.Waterfalls pound your head into shape

:02:25. > :02:32.Let the sea beat your longing out of you

:02:33. > :02:43.Restless spirits to whom no priest or pundit bid farewell

:02:44. > :02:57.Strange names of disparate tongues from far-flung places

:02:58. > :03:04.Let this island medicine intoxicate you

:03:05. > :03:12.Let the liquor dance a spirit dance in your veins

:03:13. > :03:24.This is where you come to find yourself

:03:25. > :03:30.Into the forest, into the cane fields

:03:31. > :03:42.Among the lost things of this island, find yourself whole again.

:03:43. > :03:46.For over a decade the British artist Chris Ofili

:03:47. > :03:51.has made the Caribbean island of Trinidad his home.

:03:52. > :03:54.For me, one of the attractive things about Trinidad is

:03:55. > :04:06.and it still feels like it's brand-new.

:04:07. > :04:20.From his explosive early works featuring riotous colours,

:04:21. > :04:23.collage and, infamously, elephant dung,

:04:24. > :04:31.Chris Ofili has always pushed the possibilities of painting.

:04:32. > :04:36.But his time in Trinidad has been a creative rebirth.

:04:37. > :04:40.There's so much of it and it's so powerful -

:04:41. > :05:00.It's just a very kind of painterly island.

:05:01. > :05:06.is to find a way to bring those elements together

:05:07. > :05:20.His latest project attempts just this.

:05:21. > :05:24.It's a remarkable collaboration, a giant tapestry,

:05:25. > :05:28.almost three metres high and over seven metres wide,

:05:29. > :05:31.that is centrepiece of a new Ofili exhibition

:05:32. > :05:42.Created alongside a team of master weavers,

:05:43. > :05:54.it's taken nearly three years to complete.

:05:55. > :06:02.that weaves together the sights and sounds of Trinidad...

:06:03. > :06:07...with nods to both the classical world and, unexpectedly,

:06:08. > :06:15.the Italian footballer Mario Balotelli.

:06:16. > :06:20.And he's called it The Caged Bird's Song.

:06:21. > :06:25.It brings to mind the idea of the question of sweetness of the song.

:06:26. > :06:34.Is the sweeter song the song of the uncaged bird

:06:35. > :06:44.And what that really is asking about liberation and constraint

:06:45. > :06:50.and how that could potentially relate to...

:06:51. > :07:15.The story begins four and a half thousand miles away from Trinidad...

:07:16. > :07:25.This former Victorian swimming baths is home to Dovecot Studios,

:07:26. > :07:32.one of the world's leading creators of hand-woven tapestries.

:07:33. > :07:36.Back in 2013, the studio was approached by the Clothworkers,

:07:37. > :07:40.a London livery company with a rich textile history,

:07:41. > :07:48.who were looking to make a bold new commission.

:07:49. > :07:54.We were hoping for a contemporary, a modern, vibrant tapestry,

:07:55. > :07:55.and we were looking for an established,

:07:56. > :08:03.Dovecot came up with a short list, and then,

:08:04. > :08:10.when we found that Chris was very keen to experiment outside his usual

:08:11. > :08:15.field, to go in to tapestry, we were absolutely delighted.

:08:16. > :08:22.The Clothworkers wrote and asked if I would consider making a tapestry

:08:23. > :08:29.Which, to me, at the time, seemed like a commission.

:08:30. > :08:31.Which is something that I would normally run away from

:08:32. > :08:35.because I felt that the fear is that they would want to have a say in

:08:36. > :08:44.raised a level of anxiety that I didn't really want to take on.

:08:45. > :08:49.So I think I sent back a number of, like, questions

:08:50. > :08:53.and they were pretty much a list of things I wasn't going to do, like

:08:54. > :08:55.I didn't want to see where it was going to go,

:08:56. > :08:59.and I didn't want to have a conversation about content.

:09:00. > :09:03.On every front, you just nixed them.

:09:04. > :09:12.I thought, no, now they've agreed to everything,

:09:13. > :09:18.that means that they've got something up their sleeve.

:09:19. > :09:22.The way that Chris works with colours really is fascinating,

:09:23. > :09:25.and we thought that would very much fulfil the bill.

:09:26. > :09:31.We wanted a Chris Ofili piece, we wanted him to be happy.

:09:32. > :09:37.At home in Trinidad, Ofili created a vibrant design for the tapestry -

:09:38. > :09:44.a triptych, painted - rather mischievously - in watercolour.

:09:45. > :09:52.because the subject is pretty much about water and fluidity.

:09:53. > :09:57.And I also thought it would be funny to see if the weavers could actually

:09:58. > :10:03.So I found myself making a watercolour

:10:04. > :10:06.and trying to release the pigment even more,

:10:07. > :10:11.and almost giggling at the fact that it was almost impossible for them to

:10:12. > :10:14.There's no way they're going to be able to do this.

:10:15. > :10:28.and met them, they had a kind of solidity to them, and a confidence,

:10:29. > :10:30.a creative confidence, about their own process.

:10:31. > :10:33.Thankfully, they were really open to the challenge of it.

:10:34. > :10:42.as to whether or not they could achieve it.

:10:43. > :10:45.For the weavers, it was a major undertaking.

:10:46. > :10:50.and complexity would take years of their lives.

:10:51. > :10:57.Haven't you chosen something quite challenging?

:10:58. > :11:01.Because watercolours must be incredibly difficult to weave and to

:11:02. > :11:07.The watercolour is, like, multi-layered, so you're often

:11:08. > :11:12.looking at the colours underneath to come up through, as well.

:11:13. > :11:26.They want... They did a colour strip, wove it in front of me,

:11:27. > :11:33.and they started to put together threads to make that turquoise fizz

:11:34. > :11:36.in front of my eyes, when you look at it as a solid colour.

:11:37. > :11:40.And I realised that was completely different to my understanding of it.

:11:41. > :11:49.And so I felt as though I could just let go and float with this process.

:11:50. > :11:53.These are the bobbins that we use for weaving with.

:11:54. > :11:56.If you're wanting to weave something that looks all the same colour,

:11:57. > :11:59.but you don't want it to look flat like cardboard,

:12:00. > :12:02.you would make a mix with very close colours,

:12:03. > :12:12.and then it would just gently look like the same colour.

:12:13. > :12:17.you get more of an idea of what it's going to weave up like.

:12:18. > :12:20.So these are more subtle, different variations of these colours.

:12:21. > :12:23.I can see these... That's right, yes.

:12:24. > :12:27.I think we lifted the colour from the original image.

:12:28. > :12:30.But there's almost no pure colour in here, is there?

:12:31. > :12:33.It's all a mix... It's all a mix, yes. ..which watercolour is, really.

:12:34. > :12:38.Absolutely. Making those mixtures means that we can get the subtlety

:12:39. > :12:42.and the richness. But it also means that we can blend one colour

:12:43. > :12:45.into another to get that... This watercolour effect.

:12:46. > :12:54.Watercolour and wool are such completely different materials. Yes!

:12:55. > :12:56.He's a master colourist, Chris Ofili, so,

:12:57. > :12:59.he wanted to challenge them by using a watercolour pigment,

:13:00. > :13:02.which is the most free-flowing of the pigments,

:13:03. > :13:06.and so you get this wonderful paradox between this spontaneous,

:13:07. > :13:15.which then becomes this permanent fixed three-dimensional object

:13:16. > :13:23.There is that great variation in the watercolours themselves, very lush,

:13:24. > :13:27.and then almost non-colour and the use of charcoal.

:13:28. > :13:32.Midweek colours? Yeah, midweek colours, and the weekend colours are

:13:33. > :13:34.the popping colours that you get around.

:13:35. > :13:45.And he's drawn in charcoal and his clothing is turquoise.

:13:46. > :13:48.I remember putting the turquoise down and the colour just suddenly

:13:49. > :13:53.I remember thinking, "Oh, no! I've screwed it up!"

:13:54. > :14:00.And then, I just thought, this is kind of hilarious.

:14:01. > :14:03.That they are now going to capture that moment,

:14:04. > :14:06.and I still see it when I look at it.

:14:07. > :14:07.You're a bit of a sadist, aren't you?

:14:08. > :14:12.No! No! I think it was just to see if...

:14:13. > :14:19.It was a way of trying to have a dialogue, really.

:14:20. > :14:24.So, what of the actual narrative within Ofili's tapestry design?

:14:25. > :14:27.Both the glowing colour palette and much of its imagery draws

:14:28. > :14:32.inspiration from his adopted island home of Trinidad.

:14:33. > :14:43.and try and get to the bottom of the caged-bird phenomenon.

:14:44. > :14:48.I like to almost observe it from a distance.

:14:49. > :14:51.You could be running around the Savanna,

:14:52. > :14:54.and somebody would come towards you, walking,

:14:55. > :14:56.and they're carrying a little bird in a cage.

:14:57. > :15:00.Then you can go to these competitions, which is like

:15:01. > :15:07.a kind of orchestra of little birds in cages, singing, you know.

:15:08. > :15:10.In the mornings in Trinidad, there's incredible birdsong.

:15:11. > :15:23.Keeping songbirds is a surprisingly macho subculture on the island.

:15:24. > :15:27.The birds are fed a local seed grass, known as crab eye,

:15:28. > :15:34.to help them perform to the best of their abilities.

:15:35. > :15:37.I grew up here and my grandfather used to mine then, my father,

:15:38. > :15:42.and now I have them. I inherit some of them even from my grandfather.

:15:43. > :15:47.These birds live up to 30, 35 years.

:15:48. > :15:56.The notes of the birds singing is just pleasing to my ear.

:15:57. > :16:00.When I listen to my birds, I have to play music, I like that song.

:16:01. > :16:15.I haven't, to this day, got myself my own caged bird.

:16:16. > :16:23.I do think it's a beautiful thing to be able to have around.

:16:24. > :16:28.Some of the songs of these caged birds are just...

:16:29. > :16:37.And they really just kind of captivate you and throw you

:16:38. > :16:52.MUSIC: You're Goin' Miss Your Candyman by Terry Callier

:16:53. > :16:55.Chris, he appreciates what we have here.

:16:56. > :17:02.This place is just such a rich bed for anyone who wants to study

:17:03. > :17:09.and the various nuances associated with such, you know?

:17:10. > :17:14.Especially those who have a particular creative energy.

:17:15. > :17:30.The natural world has been a huge source of delight for him,

:17:31. > :17:40.There's a tropical world, the colours are more vivid.

:17:41. > :17:49.You know, the sun shines more brightly.

:17:50. > :17:52.He's not the only artist to have moved to that kind of

:17:53. > :18:08.And I think it's inevitable that what you see around you becomes...

:18:09. > :18:15.becomes part of the landscape, becomes part of your repertoire.

:18:16. > :18:22.a great artist is that they often make a story their own.

:18:23. > :18:32.You know, what you're looking at, really, in the tapestry,

:18:33. > :18:39.And what's happening behind the curtain.

:18:40. > :18:42.And then when the curtain closes again,

:18:43. > :18:46.the man holding the caged bird, the lady holding the bird seed

:18:47. > :18:53.But just to try to understand the journey you went on, this is,

:18:54. > :18:56.in the end, one image, but you went through

:18:57. > :19:00.You didn't just arrive at that idea.

:19:01. > :19:03.There was a point at which I was quite clear on what the image was

:19:04. > :19:06.going to be. But I wanted to be able to render it with ease.

:19:07. > :19:10.And so, in order to do that, you kind of have to go through a few

:19:11. > :19:14.different iterations, really, of the same thing.

:19:15. > :19:19.To see what happens when a curve moves left instead of right,

:19:20. > :19:22.or a stroke is done from the bottom up, or the top down.

:19:23. > :19:24.And it's just to see which flows better.

:19:25. > :19:28.The fluidity is also part of the process of making,

:19:29. > :19:41.The sense of flow and the presence of water is everywhere in Ofili's

:19:42. > :19:58.A couple sit by a waterfall with a river swirling around them.

:19:59. > :20:06.The man is busy serenading, while the woman sips a cocktail.

:20:07. > :20:11.And the cocktail is being poured by a strange, abstracted figure,

:20:12. > :20:18.based on an image of the Italian footballer Mario Balotelli in tears.

:20:19. > :20:22.So, Chris, where does it all begin with Mario?

:20:23. > :20:27.Um... I was interested in the fact that maybe the tears,

:20:28. > :20:30.his tears, could become part of the cocktail. Ah!

:20:31. > :20:34.Yeah, that there's this kind of deep underlying sadness to him

:20:35. > :20:41.that's being transferred into this potion, or drink.

:20:42. > :20:45.But, in this case, I wanted to really collage the image that I was

:20:46. > :20:51.For it to be there, still in its raw state.

:20:52. > :21:12.connects various threads in Ofili's own story.

:21:13. > :21:15.Born and raised in Manchester to Nigerian parents,

:21:16. > :21:19.Chris's explorations of race and Afro identity -

:21:20. > :21:39.have always been a distinctive feature of his work.

:21:40. > :21:42.he won the Turner Prize for paintings

:21:43. > :21:46.that included a poignant depiction of Doreen Lawrence,

:21:47. > :21:53.grieving her son Stephen's brutal murder.

:21:54. > :22:01.For me, it's about trying to make a painting about tremendous loss.

:22:02. > :22:05.I mean, I focused on the image that was strongest to me,

:22:06. > :22:09.which was of Doreen, his mother, crying.

:22:10. > :22:13.And that just seemed like such a powerful image.

:22:14. > :22:17.When I finished the painting it felt like that raw emotion, that sorrow,

:22:18. > :22:24.it felt like that was actually in the room.

:22:25. > :22:28.As for Balotelli, the son of Ghanaian immigrants to Sicily,

:22:29. > :22:32.he was later fostered by an Italian family.

:22:33. > :22:36.But his footballing gifts are often overshadowed by his own volatile

:22:37. > :22:49.reputation, and racism within the game.

:22:50. > :22:59.So...I can't, in my heart, say that I think he's a wonderful footballer.

:23:00. > :23:01.Because he's wearing the wrong-colour shirt.

:23:02. > :23:05.But I think there are other qualities to him

:23:06. > :23:10.that are outside of his abilities as a sportsman.

:23:11. > :23:15.Qualities that seem much more mythical.

:23:16. > :23:20.I think, you know, the fact that he's a black African Italian.

:23:21. > :23:33.He symbolises the way race plays a part, still, in sport.

:23:34. > :23:41.I think he's a maverick, in a way that you don't often get.

:23:42. > :23:44.I've worked with images of him before,

:23:45. > :23:48.and this is another one, I'm still trying to figure it out.

:23:49. > :23:56.And I think, with him, it's also not fixed.

:23:57. > :24:00.So I've cast him in this sense, as a...

:24:01. > :24:06.Which you've done... You've done a bit of cocktail...

:24:07. > :24:12.Yeah. I like that idea of almost being in disguise, really.

:24:13. > :24:15.But you're also able to take on another personality

:24:16. > :24:20.Is that because when you were doing it you were trying

:24:21. > :24:22.to kind of get a glimpse of the world as it was,

:24:23. > :24:27.See it differently, yeah. To try and see things differently momentarily.

:24:28. > :24:40.Let's just say there are great cocktail waiters in the world.

:24:41. > :24:44.There must be something other than just mixing drinks.

:24:45. > :25:01.Adopting masks and alternative personas

:25:02. > :25:19.Much of the island's multicultural population is the colonial legacy.

:25:20. > :25:23.Generations of African slaves and indentured Indian labourers

:25:24. > :25:30.toiled on its sugar and cocoa plantations.

:25:31. > :25:34.When we think about the Amerindians who lived here...

:25:35. > :25:45...and constructed, if you want, on their slaughter.

:25:46. > :26:12.Trinidad's annual carnival is a visceral celebration

:26:13. > :26:30.When rebellion is put down, as most of them have been...

:26:31. > :26:38.revolt on behalf of, or against, do not disappear.

:26:39. > :26:43.The people's attitude to these things also doesn't disappear.

:26:44. > :26:53.Right? What happens is that this moves into the culture.

:26:54. > :26:57.And that is why art and culture functions in

:26:58. > :27:00.such subversive ways in a kind of way,

:27:01. > :27:05.because you're looking for them to frontally to be saying one thing,

:27:06. > :27:22.and then they are saying something else, you know?

:27:23. > :27:25.It's a very interesting thing about our Carnival, we have, like,

:27:26. > :27:33.In our mythology we have so many shape shifters.

:27:34. > :27:36.You know, there are so many characters that change perspective,

:27:37. > :27:39.and change their outward appearance

:27:40. > :27:49.When you put on a costume, especially a blue devil,

:27:50. > :27:54.You know what I mean? Your energy is raw.

:27:55. > :27:58.It's raw. You kind of cast away your inhibitions.

:27:59. > :28:00.And as we say in Trinidad, you are free of yourself.

:28:01. > :28:05.I don't know, maybe that's part of what Chris

:28:06. > :28:26.experiences here. A certain level of freedom.

:28:27. > :28:32.The thing about Chris is that he... He disappears in a place like this.

:28:33. > :28:38.His blackness includes him in the society,

:28:39. > :28:43.in a way that if he was a white artist, he would not.

:28:44. > :28:50.His otherness is different here than it would be in England.

:28:51. > :28:55.For somebody who is a transplant from somewhere else,

:28:56. > :28:58.but a transplant from somewhere else that he doesn't know at all,

:28:59. > :29:16.the fact that Trinidad's full of people with different histories,

:29:17. > :29:19.did you just somehow absorb that and then sort of

:29:20. > :29:30.one of the attractive things about Trinidad is that it's still quite

:29:31. > :29:34.mysterious. And you think you are going in one direction,

:29:35. > :29:37.and you realise you're actually not going in that direction.

:29:38. > :29:40.If anything, it's kind of kept things open.

:29:41. > :29:50...it to feel... To still feel like life is still being collaged

:29:51. > :30:00.Meanwhile, bringing Ofili's watercolour design to life

:30:01. > :30:04.remains a daunting task for the weavers.

:30:05. > :30:07.And yet, the whole art of tapestry-making

:30:08. > :30:13.is incredibly exacting, and labour-intensive.

:30:14. > :30:18.For centuries, tapestries were cherished for these very reasons.

:30:19. > :30:23.They were to the north of Europe what fresco was to the south.

:30:24. > :30:30.Vast projections of power, wealth and sophistication.

:30:31. > :30:37.would have stretched three miles if laid end to end.

:30:38. > :30:42.But the intricate processes involved in creating tapestry have changed

:30:43. > :30:47.Everything has to be made from scratch,

:30:48. > :30:51.and Ofili's original watercolours dramatically scaled up.

:30:52. > :30:55.looking forward to working with Chris

:30:56. > :31:00.after his work doing some set designs of backdrops for a ballet,

:31:01. > :31:05.we thought that he can imagine his work on that sort of scale.

:31:06. > :31:08.And so we knew that they would work well.

:31:09. > :31:17.You can see at the bottom it says, "Please enlarge by 877%."

:31:18. > :31:21.So from that we get a line drawing that we call the cartoon -

:31:22. > :31:31.Each mark has to be made not just on the front of

:31:32. > :31:33.the warp thread but also all the way round.

:31:34. > :31:43.And we're looking at the lines that are actually on the warps.

:31:44. > :31:48.We are constantly referring back to the image with the small cartoon

:31:49. > :31:50.sitting over the top. Already from this conversation,

:31:51. > :31:54.I can see how exhausting this must be.
