0:00:33 > 0:00:37Hello and a very warm welcome to Day 2 of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games
0:00:37 > 0:00:40here in Pyeongchang, and what a first 24
0:00:40 > 0:00:47hours we have had.
0:00:49 > 0:00:55Charlotte Kalla becomes the skiathlon Winter Olympic champion.
0:00:55 > 0:01:02And the hosts have gold! They have struck gold!
0:01:03 > 0:01:05struck gold! This is great skating from Elise Christie! She is safely
0:01:05 > 0:01:08through to the quarterfinals.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10Hopefully more of the same today, and we'll head first
0:01:10 > 0:01:14to the Gangeung Ice Arena and Day 2 of the Team Figure Skating.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17On Friday, we saw the Olympics Athletes from Russia,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, lead the pairs
0:01:19 > 0:01:21short programme.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24While in the men's, it was Japan's Shoma Uno who impressed.
0:01:24 > 0:01:29But it was the Canadians who were leading the overall competition.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32Today, it was the turn of the ice dancers and the women
0:01:32 > 0:01:35in the short programme, and after that, the top five
0:01:35 > 0:01:36countries will return for the free skate.
0:01:36 > 0:01:37We'll see the pairs today.
0:01:37 > 0:01:43Kat Downes and Robin Cousins can talk us through this one.
0:01:48 > 0:01:53COMMENTATOR: As you can hear from the roar of the crowd and the waving
0:01:53 > 0:01:56from the Star Spangled Banner is in the audience, these are the first of
0:01:56 > 0:02:01the big names when it comes to ice dance, Maia Shibutani and Alex
0:02:01 > 0:02:05Shibutani of the US, brother and sister, three-time World
0:02:05 > 0:02:09Championship medallists and social media addicts.
0:04:07 > 0:04:15Terrific six loops of twizzles there. Always such precision with
0:04:15 > 0:04:20these two skaters.
0:05:10 > 0:05:16Neat as pins, those two. They have been since they burst onto the scene
0:05:16 > 0:05:19as juniors. They were junior world champions and it was the precision
0:05:19 > 0:05:24and their technical ability that really stuck out then and it is what
0:05:24 > 0:05:29has carried them through, their technical prowess that has always
0:05:29 > 0:05:43carried them forward. There is such precision in the technical detail.
0:05:44 > 0:05:51Wow! That is a leap up. I mean, that is at least ten points higher than
0:05:51 > 0:05:58everybody else. This is the first chance, then, four B Blackcomb to
0:05:58 > 0:06:02decide, which are you? These are the Canadians, Tessa Virtue and Scott
0:06:02 > 0:06:07Moir, the reigning world champions, silver medallists from Sochi in the
0:06:07 > 0:06:13last Olympics, and they were deeply disappointed with that. Took a
0:06:13 > 0:06:15couple of years when from competition and came back to win the
0:06:15 > 0:06:20World Championship last year. -- away from competition.I'm going to
0:06:20 > 0:06:21let you watch.
0:09:23 > 0:09:27If you couldn't tell that that is a class apart, then you are probably
0:09:27 > 0:09:32watching with your eyes closed.I absolutely love watching Tessa and
0:09:32 > 0:09:39Scott 's gate. -- Scott 's gate. They've been skating together for
0:09:39 > 0:09:46over 20 years. So let's see what the judges made of this. 80.51, a
0:09:46 > 0:09:54massive score. Canada were top of the team standings before they
0:09:54 > 0:09:58skated and they are now very much at the top of the team standings. We
0:09:58 > 0:10:02will have a clearer picture after the last couple has skated, and they
0:10:02 > 0:10:07are out on the ice at the moment. Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri
0:10:07 > 0:10:13Soloviev are the last couple to skate in the ice dance short
0:10:13 > 0:10:19programme, the Olympic Athletes from Russia. Heading out onto the ice and
0:10:19 > 0:10:23in the absence of their team colours, there is a massive bank of
0:10:23 > 0:10:29Russian supporters away up to my left all in the red, white and blue.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30I don't know about you but I couldn't take my eyes off her
0:13:30 > 0:13:34earrings! They had a life of their own!I think that is one of the best
0:13:34 > 0:13:45skates they have had this season. 74.76, then, for the Olympic
0:13:45 > 0:13:50Athletes from Russia and they are in third place behind the USA and
0:13:50 > 0:13:58Canada.Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes team event ice dance...
0:13:58 > 0:14:02These are the results for the ice dance short dance, Tessa Virtue and
0:14:02 > 0:14:06Scott Moir head and shoulders above the rest as we would expect of the
0:14:06 > 0:14:11world champions from Canada out in front, and the pair from the USA out
0:14:11 > 0:14:16in second with the Olympic Athletes from Russia in third. This is the
0:14:16 > 0:14:18last short programme before we go through to the long programme which
0:14:18 > 0:14:24is where the medals will be decided. Carolina Kostner from Italy looking
0:14:24 > 0:14:28to bring all of her maturity from experience to help out Italy, who
0:14:28 > 0:14:35are in fifth place after the first three elements of this competition,
0:14:35 > 0:14:40the men's, the pairs, the ice dance. They are clinging on to that last
0:14:40 > 0:14:43qualification place for the long programmes and the opportunity to
0:14:43 > 0:14:50compete for a medal. Karolina Grohova, 31 years old, for Italy. --
0:14:50 > 0:14:52Carolina Kostner.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29Triple toe loop after the triple flip, but she fought for it and made
0:15:29 > 0:15:31it happen.
0:15:45 > 0:15:50Much better with the triple loop.
0:17:39 > 0:17:43CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Just a couple of moments then fork
0:17:43 > 0:17:52Carolina Kostner, but solid, solid skating, just as you'd expect from a
0:17:52 > 0:17:57woman of her experience.It's a beautiful, beautiful programme and
0:17:57 > 0:18:02choreographic li we talked about content and if you go away, the
0:18:02 > 0:18:06song, it's all about the things that would happen, the desperation if you
0:18:06 > 0:18:13were to leave me and she feels it. It's glorious.
0:18:17 > 0:18:25It's glorious.75.10, so well down on her season's best. This is the
0:18:25 > 0:18:33skater for team Canada, our leaders at the moment. This lady in charge
0:18:33 > 0:18:38of the ladies' short programme, they are likely to stay up there. Kaetlyn
0:18:38 > 0:18:43Osmond, silver medallist at the last World Championships and she'll be in
0:18:43 > 0:18:49the mix as well when it comes to the individual medals, I should think.
0:19:14 > 0:19:21Had triple triple of choices triple flip. Triple toe loop. Not the way
0:19:21 > 0:19:25she would want to do it though.
0:19:40 > 0:19:47Oh! Great body lean there Rhondda triple lutz but managed to correct
0:19:47 > 0:19:54it for the landing. -- one that triple lutz, but managed to correct
0:19:54 > 0:19:55it for the landing.
0:21:38 > 0:21:43CHEERING AND APPLAUSE A bit rough around the edges perhaps
0:21:43 > 0:21:46from Kaetlyn Osmond, but she was skating with real abandonment,
0:21:46 > 0:21:51perhaps because she already knew that team Canada have qualified, so
0:21:51 > 0:21:56they are so far in front they could not be knocked out of the top five.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59The pressure was off for Kaetlyn Osmond and she skated as though she
0:21:59 > 0:22:06was just out there to enjoy it, didn't she?
0:22:11 > 0:22:15didn't she? 71.38 as well, quite a long way down on her personal best,
0:22:15 > 0:22:18so again, some rather perplexed looking faces in the Canadian box,
0:22:18 > 0:22:22but they are already through to the long programme so team celebrations
0:22:22 > 0:22:27for team Canada because they will be through to compete for the medals,
0:22:27 > 0:22:34but all eyes on the ice because this is Russia's ice princess. Evgenia
0:22:34 > 0:22:39Medvedeva but representing the Olympic Athletes from Russia, back
0:22:39 > 0:22:45to back World Championships for her and out to lay down a marker to her
0:22:45 > 0:22:47young countrywoman, who pipped her to the European Championship. It was
0:22:47 > 0:22:52a bit of a shock, Evgenia Medvedeva coming back from injury though. But
0:22:52 > 0:23:05she's here to save the gold medal is mine, Hans off. -- Hans off.
0:24:47 > 0:24:59Very solid triple flip, triple toe loop combination.
0:25:06 > 0:25:10Lovely triple loop.
0:25:48 > 0:25:59CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:26:03 > 0:26:10Deep inhalation of breath at the end. Absolutely exquisite from
0:26:10 > 0:26:14Evgenia Medvedeva.A lovely, beautiful performance. Seven clean
0:26:14 > 0:26:20tick boxes there as well, all greens as they happened, so no question of
0:26:20 > 0:26:28the technical ability, but she just has this, I said al fin earlier, so
0:26:28 > 0:26:32light on the ice. There's great power of speed but it's so light,
0:26:32 > 0:26:34effortless.
0:26:37 > 0:26:51Yes, she has, it's a new season's best for Evgenia Medvedeva, 81.06.
0:26:51 > 0:26:55Here are the individual standings. Evgenia Medvedeva representing the
0:26:55 > 0:27:01Ellie Slee -- Olympic Athletes from Russia, way, way out in front, takes
0:27:01 > 0:27:04ten points. Carolena Carstens in second and Kaetlyn Osmond, the world
0:27:04 > 0:27:09silver medallist in third. We've reached the business end of this
0:27:09 > 0:27:12team competition, the short programmes are over and done with
0:27:12 > 0:27:15and with ten teams we started with here have been whittled down to the
0:27:15 > 0:27:21five best in the world.
0:27:24 > 0:27:28five best in the world. The Italians, the five times singles
0:27:28 > 0:27:32champion she was, she came 11th at the Sochi games in the singles, he
0:27:32 > 0:27:37came 11th in the pairs. Here they are, teamed up together at
0:27:37 > 0:27:46Pyeongchang.And making their Olympic debut here. Their team-mates
0:27:46 > 0:27:53performed the short programme. What can they do with this free
0:27:53 > 0:27:58programme?
0:28:09 > 0:28:17Oh, much stronger than they have done the triple twist in practice.
0:28:31 > 0:28:46They can make the triple toe loops that they want. Lovely.
0:28:56 > 0:29:01Triple salchow, double toe, double toe, excellent. I'm not sure about
0:29:01 > 0:29:05the camera angle but the jumps were good.
0:29:44 > 0:29:52Gorgeous throw and triple loop.
0:31:39 > 0:31:43One big element left, throw and triple lutz. Beautiful.
0:32:25 > 0:32:30What a show! Oh, that is how it feels to get green boxes across the
0:32:30 > 0:32:38board. Look at that!I knew that scream was coming. That was
0:32:38 > 0:32:41absolutely superb! Probably the best I have seen them skate and they have
0:32:41 > 0:32:48not been together that long. Oh, I love this. When it works like this.
0:32:48 > 0:32:54That was absolutely superb. We shall see. They're skating has moved on
0:32:54 > 0:32:58leaps and bounds but goodness me, those green boxes came up quickly.
0:32:58 > 0:33:04Oh, my goodness, it's big!
0:33:05 > 0:33:07Oh, my goodness, it's big! 138.44, a new season's best. What a
0:33:07 > 0:33:14performance from the Italians.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17performance from the Italians. These are some big Canadian chances for a
0:33:17 > 0:33:26gold medal, perhaps, even in the individual. If Megan Duhamel and
0:33:26 > 0:33:30Eric Radford can't recapture top spot for team Canada, then who can?
0:33:30 > 0:33:34Silver at last year's team event. They are going for gold this time.
0:34:03 > 0:34:13Opening with a triple twist.
0:34:22 > 0:34:37Side by side, triple lutzes.
0:34:37 > 0:34:44And now the biggest element of the pairs championship, if they go for
0:34:44 > 0:34:52it, it is a throw quadruple salchow. Take that breasts.
0:34:52 > 0:34:57They
0:34:57 > 0:35:06they have got it clean, hands down but they made the rotation.
0:36:11 > 0:36:21Now a triple lutz coming, there, down, got it.
0:38:12 > 0:38:19CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Big tricks from Canada's big guns
0:38:19 > 0:38:23and that is surely enough to see them back into the gold medal
0:38:23 > 0:38:28position.Absolutely. Probably one of the best performances they have
0:38:28 > 0:38:33given of the season so far which is what they want. "Yes, Yes, yes", she
0:38:33 > 0:38:40says.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43says.148.51 and that is a massive lead for them in the pairs free
0:38:43 > 0:38:48skate event, ten points clear of the Italians in second and that puts
0:38:48 > 0:38:53Canada back up to the top of the standings as we return to the ice
0:38:53 > 0:38:59for the final couple for this pairs free skating competition and they
0:38:59 > 0:39:03are the recently crowned European bronze medallists, Natalia Zabiiako
0:39:03 > 0:39:12and Alexander Enbert.
0:39:15 > 0:39:24They represent the Olympic Athletes from Russia, currently in silver.
0:40:02 > 0:40:08Triple toe loop, double toe loop, double loop, just to be slightly
0:40:08 > 0:40:16different in the combination.
0:40:29 > 0:40:35They would have wanted those to be side by side triple salchows.
0:41:00 > 0:41:10Very nice, triple flip.
0:42:14 > 0:42:26Huge throw triple loop.
0:43:26 > 0:43:33That will be costly. That is a shame.
0:44:02 > 0:44:06Just an untimely trip, wasn't it, from Natalia
0:44:06 > 0:44:08Just an untimely trip, wasn't it, from Natalia, came out of nowhere.
0:44:08 > 0:44:12Did very well to save it. She didn't fully go to the floor. We will see
0:44:12 > 0:44:20whether or not they get a deduction.
0:44:22 > 0:44:28133.28, the deduction for the knee down, the trip, could prove costly,
0:44:28 > 0:44:31way down on their personal best and the Olympic Athletes from Russia
0:44:31 > 0:44:37were in the Silver medal position after the ladies Short skate but we
0:44:37 > 0:44:43will see where that leaves them in the overall standings.
0:44:43 > 0:44:47the overall standings. Let's have a look at the free skating results.
0:44:47 > 0:44:52Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford way out in front, taking ten points.
0:44:52 > 0:44:55Brilliant performance from the Italians in second and the Olympic
0:44:55 > 0:45:00Athletes from Russia after that costly trip, only take eight points
0:45:00 > 0:45:08and third position. Of course, this is a team event. Let's see how the
0:45:08 > 0:45:16team standings are going into the final day.
0:45:18 > 0:45:23Look at Italy, just one point behind the USA as well, in fourth position.
0:45:23 > 0:45:27Japan is not yet out of it, they have some brilliant individual
0:45:27 > 0:45:32skaters skaters to come perhaps tomorrow. It all comes down to what
0:45:32 > 0:45:38happens in the men's, ladies' and ice dancers when they fight it out
0:45:38 > 0:45:41for the medals tomorrow. Canada are the ones to chase down,
0:45:41 > 0:45:42for the medals tomorrow. Canada are the ones to chase down, they have a
0:45:42 > 0:45:456-point lead over the rest of the field in the gold medal position.
0:45:45 > 0:45:50After the short programme it was ten teams, that's whittled down to just
0:45:50 > 0:45:55the five best in the world. Canada wants to catch. It comes down to
0:45:55 > 0:45:58team tactics today, doesn't it, because we knew who we were going to
0:45:58 > 0:46:02see skating in the short programmes, but it comes down to which skaters
0:46:02 > 0:46:08do you put out on ice to try to chase down those medals in the final
0:46:08 > 0:46:12day of competition? For those teams that are big enough, Canada, Japan,
0:46:12 > 0:46:17the USA, the Olympic Athletes from Russia, they have a choice the
0:46:17 > 0:46:21Italians, the only male they have will be competing so he has to be on
0:46:21 > 0:46:25board, but the others will be deciding who they want to rest, who
0:46:25 > 0:46:30might be a medal contender in a few days' time, or do they go, I'd want
0:46:30 > 0:46:36to compete now as well. We saw Meagan Duhamel has to be in the mix
0:46:36 > 0:46:40for gold in the pairs, short and long programme for this team event,
0:46:40 > 0:46:44so everybody has a different tactic, not only from a team's point of view
0:46:44 > 0:46:49but from the skaters' point of view. How do you go out, what do you want
0:46:49 > 0:46:53to do, what do you want to say to the world? You have a team
0:46:53 > 0:46:56competition, do you want to get out there and try at first. The team
0:46:56 > 0:47:04competition matters. The skaters we are seeing in action are here for
0:47:04 > 0:47:06individual glory in the main, but they still want to take home team
0:47:06 > 0:47:09medal, don't they?Absolutely. They are skaters who are part of a team
0:47:09 > 0:47:13that would never be close to being on a podium in their individual
0:47:13 > 0:47:19events, so collectively as a team it is nice. We saw the first team gold
0:47:19 > 0:47:23medal go out in Sochi, here we are, Games number two and let's see what
0:47:23 > 0:47:28happens today. It will be a bunfight, I think, to be honest.
0:47:28 > 0:47:33Canada are way out in front. Who are your favourites to chase them down?
0:47:33 > 0:47:36Japan have some superstars, particularly when it comes to the
0:47:36 > 0:47:40men.Do with the men, they do with the ladies. They don't really the
0:47:40 > 0:47:48dance. You have to say it's USA
0:47:48 > 0:47:50dance. You have to say it's USA who have a chance in all three, then you
0:47:50 > 0:47:52have the Olympic Athletes from Russia, it doesn't really matter who
0:47:52 > 0:47:55they pick, they are all in the mix. It's definitely Canada's gold to
0:47:55 > 0:47:58lose but let's see who decides to come up from behind and maybe try to
0:47:58 > 0:48:02pick them to the post.Canada's gold to lose, they came away with the
0:48:02 > 0:48:06silver in Sochi, looking to go one better here and there in a brilliant
0:48:06 > 0:48:10position going into the final day's competition, six points clear of the
0:48:10 > 0:48:14rest of the field with the Olympic Athletes from Russia in silver and
0:48:14 > 0:48:18United States in bronze, Italy one point behind them and Japan in
0:48:18 > 0:48:23fifth. It's really tight as we see where the medals will go.
0:48:23 > 0:48:25Well, the team event concludes tomorrow and we'll have extended
0:48:25 > 0:48:27highlights of that here on BBC4.
0:48:27 > 0:48:28Can the Canadians take that gold medal?
0:48:28 > 0:48:30Yesterday, we saw Sweden's Charlotte Kalla take the first
0:48:30 > 0:48:33gold medal of the games in the women's skiathlon.
0:48:33 > 0:48:35She finished just ahead of Marit Boergen, whose silver
0:48:35 > 0:48:40made her the most decorated woman in Winter Olympics history.
0:48:40 > 0:48:42Today it's the turn of the men and Great Britain does
0:48:42 > 0:48:46have an outside chance of a medal in Andrew Musgrave.
0:48:46 > 0:48:52He's been talking to Graham Bell.
0:49:01 > 0:49:06Pyeongchang, your third Winter Olympics. What have you learned from
0:49:06 > 0:49:09Vancouver and Sochi?When I first went to Vancouver I was pretty
0:49:09 > 0:49:13young, still a junior, not that experienced. I was definitely just
0:49:13 > 0:49:20going to find out what the Olympics was like. Sochi, I went there and I
0:49:20 > 0:49:22did slightly underperformed compared to what I thought I should be able
0:49:22 > 0:49:28to do. Like, I've learned a lot, especially after Sochi, about how to
0:49:28 > 0:49:32peak form, how to deal with pressure on things like that. So I think a
0:49:32 > 0:49:38lot more experience going into this Games than I was last time. You won
0:49:38 > 0:49:41the Norwegian Championships ahead of Sochi and that kind of got you of
0:49:41 > 0:49:47press. Is it put extra pressure on you ahead of Sochi?I think I did
0:49:47 > 0:49:52get a bit affected by it. I trained a little bit too hard, did a little
0:49:52 > 0:49:56bit too much in the lead up and I didn't do what I normally do, and I
0:49:56 > 0:50:00let things go to my head. That's one of the things I've learned. In Sochi
0:50:00 > 0:50:05you said you skied like a tranquillised badger. Why a badger?
0:50:05 > 0:50:09It's a very good question! I don't know, the first thing that came into
0:50:09 > 0:50:13my head when I was so annoyed with the race. I don't think I was ever
0:50:13 > 0:50:17going to be one of the favourites for a medal but I should have done
0:50:17 > 0:50:22better than I did.The guy who you beat just a few weeks before won the
0:50:22 > 0:50:27gold.Just too good on the day, what a spectacle.Yeah, he did. I
0:50:27 > 0:50:31outperformed myself on that day, I think and if I'd have done the same
0:50:31 > 0:50:35again in the Olympics I could have obviously been there fighting for
0:50:35 > 0:50:39the medal, whereas I feel now that I should be able to be at that level
0:50:39 > 0:50:45without having to have a super exceptional day. What do the British
0:50:45 > 0:50:50team have that gives them an advantage over say the Norwegians,
0:50:50 > 0:50:55all the Swedes, or the Russians? What gives you an edge? The fact we
0:50:55 > 0:51:01are a small team, sometimes it's a disadvantage, but sometimes it can
0:51:01 > 0:51:04be an advantage. Like we look at things differently. We've come from
0:51:04 > 0:51:08a different background, where is the big teams do the same things,
0:51:08 > 0:51:13they've always done. They've got this big structure and it's kind of
0:51:13 > 0:51:16hard to change. So we can come in and like think of things we've done
0:51:16 > 0:51:18differently that may work that they've never even thought of
0:51:18 > 0:51:23trying.Looking good for Pyeongchang. Which disciplines,
0:51:23 > 0:51:29which events, are you targeting? The 15 kilometre is the skate race so it
0:51:29 > 0:51:33will be pretty much my main event and the 30 kilometre, which is a
0:51:33 > 0:51:37combination of both classic and skate. You do the first 15
0:51:37 > 0:51:42kilometres classic and the second 15 kilometres skate, that's also good
0:51:42 > 0:51:46for me because we finish in my best style so it's those two races I'm
0:51:46 > 0:51:54really targeting. So what are your hopes and expectations from
0:51:54 > 0:51:58Pyeongchang?I was fourth at the World Championships last year and I
0:51:58 > 0:52:02feel like I've done -- I've become a better skier this year than last
0:52:02 > 0:52:07year, so this year it's realistic for me to be fighting for a medal in
0:52:07 > 0:52:15the 30 K and 15 K. Bring home a medal, that is the goal.
0:52:15 > 0:52:16COMMENTATOR: The first
0:52:16 > 0:52:19COMMENTATOR: The first event in the men's cross
0:52:19 > 0:52:27programming they cross-country programme, the 30 kilometre men's
0:52:27 > 0:52:31skiathlon. They are under way. This is a race we've been looking forward
0:52:31 > 0:52:36to for the last few months, bearing in mind the form of some of the very
0:52:36 > 0:52:39best in the world. There's so much history on the line for so many
0:52:39 > 0:52:44competing here today.
0:52:48 > 0:52:50competing here today. The first man to successfully defend a third
0:52:50 > 0:52:54title, the dominant force on the World Cup circuit hoping to become
0:52:54 > 0:52:58the youngest ever Winter Olympic champion, seven, that was Krueger
0:52:58 > 0:53:05who fell, a real shame, and 27, that's Toni Livers back in his
0:53:05 > 0:53:11fourth Games. That's a real shock. The good news from their
0:53:11 > 0:53:14perspective, I guess, is that hopefully the pace won't be too
0:53:14 > 0:53:18fast, they'll have an opportunity to get back but that's Krueger, who was
0:53:18 > 0:53:21fresh and rested for these games. Let's see if we can get another
0:53:21 > 0:53:28indication as to what happened. You can see at the front there, it looks
0:53:28 > 0:53:32like it's Krueger that goes down first, and then gets caught up with
0:53:32 > 0:53:41the two athletes from Russia, 11 and 16. Watch seven, he trips on the
0:53:41 > 0:53:45right skied, it looks like there's a collision centrally, you're on top
0:53:45 > 0:53:51of each other. You have 11.This is the ultimate test of the
0:53:51 > 0:53:55cross-country skier. Half the race in freestyle, half the race in
0:53:55 > 0:54:01classical. Look at this from Andrew Musgrave, oh, my goodness me. What
0:54:01 > 0:54:06an effort, what a performance so far. He's just got to keep it going.
0:54:06 > 0:54:10Even if he doesn't end up on the podium, what confidence this will
0:54:10 > 0:54:17give him for his best event, the 15 K. No Briton ever inside the top 25
0:54:17 > 0:54:20of any cross-country ski race in the history of the Winter Olympic Games,
0:54:20 > 0:54:27and can you believe it, he's absolutely flying at the moment.
0:54:27 > 0:54:31Musgrave is doing all the hard work here. He's the silver medal
0:54:31 > 0:54:39position. I'm just enjoying saying that! I really am. Less than four
0:54:39 > 0:54:43kilometres to go. Krueger clearly feels that going hard with four K to
0:54:43 > 0:54:49go is his best chance of getting on the podium and may be winning this
0:54:49 > 0:54:53race. If you're new to cross-country skiing, you're more used to watching
0:54:53 > 0:54:56distance running, the same principles of bravery apply. To go
0:54:56 > 0:55:03this far out shows you his intent. Now a few athletes coming past
0:55:03 > 0:55:10Andrew Musgrave. Needs to hold on here, the Briton. Maurice Manificat
0:55:10 > 0:55:16is in second place with defending champion in third. A few metres open
0:55:16 > 0:55:23up between Andrew Musgrave and the men who are currently not battling
0:55:23 > 0:55:29for three medals, battling for two. It's Norway one, two and three at
0:55:29 > 0:55:33the moment. They are definitely losing down on Krueger and they have
0:55:33 > 0:55:38a monstrous crime still to contend between now and the Finnish --
0:55:38 > 0:55:47monstrous climb. Here it is. He is seriously hurting now. His lead has
0:55:47 > 0:55:54been halved, from 22 seconds, two 11. Heerkens Martin Johnsrud Sundby
0:55:54 > 0:56:00in second place, Hans Christer Holund just behind him. Norway
0:56:00 > 0:56:05occupying all three medal positions at the moment. Their lungs will be
0:56:05 > 0:56:07absolutely bursting. Simen Hegstad Krueger, having fallen right at the
0:56:07 > 0:56:16start of the race, is going to finish the day in a blaze of glory.
0:56:16 > 0:56:18An absolutely incredible recovery against one of the best skiathlon
0:56:18 > 0:56:25fields ever assembled. Simen Hegstad Krueger is the Winter Olympic
0:56:25 > 0:56:30champion. He was down at the start, but he wasn't out. You didn't give
0:56:30 > 0:56:36up. The very epitome of what the Winter Olympics is all about. Martin
0:56:36 > 0:56:40Johnsrud Sundby upgrades bronze from four years ago da Silva. Hans
0:56:40 > 0:56:44Christer Holund coming home for the bronze and we're still waiting for
0:56:44 > 0:56:50Andrew Musgrave, a sensational effort from the Briton. It really
0:56:50 > 0:56:54is. Dario Cologna just ahead of him, Andrew Musgrave in sevens. The best
0:56:54 > 0:56:58previous performance by a British cross-country skier is 29th will
0:56:58 > 0:57:05stop Musgrave announces his arrival at the top of the sport and says, we
0:57:05 > 0:57:09Brits can be world class as well. What race, what a finish from
0:57:09 > 0:57:14Musgrave and among his scalps the World Cup leader who could only
0:57:14 > 0:57:18finish intense.I thought
0:57:18 > 0:57:18World Cup leader who could only finish intense.I thought going out,
0:57:18 > 0:57:23we had a lap and a half to go, I was pretty confident, I thought I would
0:57:23 > 0:57:27be able to get a medal and I was feeling really good and then just
0:57:27 > 0:57:31tried to keep up on the last lap underwent a bit hard and slipped
0:57:31 > 0:57:35back through the field. What do you need to do to beat the Norwegians?
0:57:35 > 0:57:43Go faster than them! No, I don't know, I think it's a completely
0:57:43 > 0:57:46different race when it is an individual start and I think I just
0:57:46 > 0:57:51needed a race to get back into it. A couple of days easy training now and
0:57:51 > 0:57:55I should be up there ready to fight. That's all from us now, we'll be
0:57:55 > 0:57:59back here tomorrow at the same time is right here on BBC Four, with the
0:57:59 > 0:58:03conclusion of the figure skating team event and all the actions of
0:58:03 > 0:58:07the women's snowboard slope style final. If you want to watch it live,
0:58:07 > 0:58:17head over to BBC One at midnight. Thanks for watching.
0:58:21 > 0:58:31Absolutely amazing. Look at that style. It's beautiful.
0:58:33 > 0:58:36Well, you've got to say that she looks absolutely amazing on a
0:58:36 > 0:58:39snowboard.
0:58:42 > 0:58:46That is why she constantly topping podiums around the world, ladies
0:58:46 > 0:58:47gentlemen!
