0:00:10 > 0:00:16Previously at the Winter Olympics... Skiing for the gold medal position

0:00:16 > 0:00:25for Norway! Magnificent! The Vikings are celebrating!PFO TA makes it two

0:00:25 > 0:00:32gold medals, back-to-back!Mikaela Shiffrin is the Olympic champion for

0:00:32 > 0:00:41the second time!It is day seven...

0:01:24 > 0:01:30CHANTING

0:01:48 > 0:01:54CHEERING

0:02:33 > 0:02:39On the first day of the Korean New Year, we are in the skeleton zone!

0:02:39 > 0:02:40Dom Parsons needed to embrace the fear and enjoy the expectation

0:02:40 > 0:02:43then he might, just might become Britain's first medallist at these

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Winter Olympic Games.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50All he had to do was travel twice down a sliding track just under

0:02:50 > 0:02:53a mile long at 80 miles per hour with his chin a few

0:02:53 > 0:02:55centimetres from the ice and without bumping any sides.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56What's so hard about that?

0:02:56 > 0:03:02Welcome to Today at the Games, here's what's coming up...

0:03:02 > 0:03:05It's been 24 years since the last British male won an individual

0:03:05 > 0:03:10Winter Olympic medal.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15Sitting fourth after two runs, could Parsons make the podium?

0:03:15 > 0:03:22In snowboarding, we'll find out which woman can boss the cross...

0:03:22 > 0:03:24A feast of alpine skiing with the women's slalom

0:03:24 > 0:03:29and men's super-g...

0:03:29 > 0:03:31In most winter sports Britain is lucky to have

0:03:31 > 0:03:35one medal contender, but in skeleton we get two

0:03:35 > 0:03:40as Yarnold and Deas slide into action...

0:03:40 > 0:03:45And joining me today... Skeleton pioneer Alex Coomber, Olympic

0:03:45 > 0:03:49champion and choreographer in demand, Christopher Dean. Our Alpine

0:03:49 > 0:03:53expert has always is Chemmy Alcott. Welcome.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56He was sliding at a blistering pace in the practice rounds,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58then after runs one and two Dom Parsons found himself just 0.03

0:03:58 > 0:03:59seconds behind the medals.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Could he go faster and claim GB's first medal of the games?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Here's Matt Pinsent.

0:04:09 > 0:04:14Day two of the men's skeleton competition and a fantastic chance

0:04:14 > 0:04:18for a piece of British history. Dominik Parsons and fourth

0:04:18 > 0:04:22overnight, a tiny fraction behind the position for a medal. A

0:04:22 > 0:04:26fantastic atmosphere in the grandstand with friends, family and

0:04:26 > 0:04:31team-mates turning out to cheer him on... Day three started with the

0:04:31 > 0:04:39overnight leader and local hero, Yun Sungbin. Hull a big moment for

0:04:39 > 0:04:49Korea.No Asian skeleton athlete has other won a medal in this. Can he go

0:04:49 > 0:04:56under 50 seconds? As he gets to the line... Not quite.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58line... Not quite. 50.18 reinforcing his position as the gold medallist

0:04:58 > 0:05:05in waiting. Next, setting off in the silver medal position at the moment,

0:05:05 > 0:05:12Nikita Tregubov...He is one second behind not even halfway down.50.5,

0:05:12 > 0:05:20every single run a position Nikita Tregubov. One of the greats for

0:05:20 > 0:05:26Latvia. The silver medallist in Sochi and Vancouver, Yun Sungbin.

0:05:26 > 0:05:32Yun Sungbin will find an athlete who is too good for him.The best

0:05:32 > 0:05:43straight so far!Dukurs in second place. Just ahead of Tregubov.We

0:05:43 > 0:05:49need you there, come on!A great step forward from run number one.

0:05:49 > 0:05:54Even if you cannot get past Dukurs or Tregubov now, on Parsons, surely

0:05:54 > 0:05:59you cannot allow the gap to grow between himself and the other two

0:05:59 > 0:06:08riders?He had incredible speed down the track. Hull two tenths of a

0:06:08 > 0:06:15second off at the moment. He finishes...Right in the mix! He

0:06:15 > 0:06:21goes ahead of Tregubov into third place.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28place.Tomass Dukurs followed, but he could not beat the Briton.Great

0:06:28 > 0:06:33Britain's Jerry Rice remained hot on the heels of the top ten.Rice,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35rice, rice!

0:06:42 > 0:06:45This is David and Judith Parsons, nervously waiting for their final

0:06:45 > 0:06:50run. What do you make of his first three runs? They are the best I've

0:06:50 > 0:06:57ever seen him do. Each one, one after the other, they were so close

0:06:57 > 0:07:03to whatever Dukurss

0:07:03 > 0:07:10does.And how is it now?It is exciting but nerve

0:07:10 > 0:07:17as well. I think that he can do it. Using right frame of mind. -- he is

0:07:17 > 0:07:26in the right frame of mind.Could Dom Parsons be about to create some

0:07:26 > 0:07:31British history? The final heat is run in reverse order. The fastest

0:07:31 > 0:07:34man, Yun Sungbin, goes last. Jerry Rice came with the aim of finishing

0:07:34 > 0:07:40in the top 12 and for him it was to be a momentous day...Jerry Rice,

0:07:40 > 0:07:47what a games he has had. And 51 seconds! A marvellous run!

0:07:47 > 0:07:53Eventually he finished in tenth. Pushing hard to break into the top

0:07:53 > 0:08:01three, Tomass Dukurs.He will come back fighting, he wants a medal.He

0:08:01 > 0:08:07is quicker than Kaymer but his final time needs to be in the really low

0:08:07 > 0:08:1850s to put pressure on. That would cut the mustard. -- that will not

0:08:18 > 0:08:24cut the mustard.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26cut the mustard.The four-time world champion, Tregubov in fourth

0:08:26 > 0:08:31place... This fellow has been so consistent. He has gone 50.5 every

0:08:31 > 0:08:39run so far.We hope he has guidelines for his competition but

0:08:39 > 0:08:43we need him to make a little mistake somewhere, to help Dom Parsons out a

0:08:43 > 0:08:52little bit.Lovely and clean through 15. The final curve for Tregubov.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56He's got another 50.5, four on the bounce for him! We know Parsons can

0:08:56 > 0:09:05go quicker. That is the excitement. I know!Dom Parsons, next. Sit

0:09:05 > 0:09:11tight, everybody. He says that he thrives on the pressure. His

0:09:11 > 0:09:16nickname is The Wizard. Let's see if he can work the Winter Olympic magic

0:09:16 > 0:09:21and get himself a medal. The equation is simple. Directly against

0:09:21 > 0:09:26Tregubov. You follow their relative times together. If his time goes

0:09:26 > 0:09:31green and Tregubov's name, he is in good shape. He starts off behind...

0:09:31 > 0:09:39Hold it together and stay calm, do not concentrate on the end result.

0:09:40 > 0:09:45The lines are good at the moment. This is good sliding. We need you to

0:09:45 > 0:09:50keep it together! We are building into the fastest part of the track.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54Exhilarating downhill. Is this the corner where we build it into the

0:09:54 > 0:09:58medal? Does it have enough pace? This will be key, coming down the

0:09:58 > 0:10:04track... Will this run get Great Britain their first Olympic medal of

0:10:04 > 0:10:09the Winter Olympics? He is marginally in front of Tregubov!

0:10:09 > 0:10:20Uphill... Spend 16... Is this to be? No! He misses out by two hundredths

0:10:20 > 0:10:25of a second. Tregubov celebrates a guaranteed medal. Dom Parsons, he

0:10:25 > 0:10:32may be agonisingly missing out.My word.He knows that he has missed

0:10:32 > 0:10:37it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41it.Next, Martin Raw Dukurs in second place. Just in front of Dom

0:10:41 > 0:10:47Parsons.

0:10:47 > 0:10:52We do need a mistake from Dukurs. He hasn't produced many of those over a

0:10:52 > 0:10:55glittering career which has seen him win silver medals at two Olympic

0:10:55 > 0:11:01Games.That was a mistake there! A big mistake he has never made

0:11:01 > 0:11:08before. Is he able to keep the time, is he also going to drop a vital

0:11:08 > 0:11:13split-second down the track? He has made two mistakes at the top of the

0:11:13 > 0:11:18track. He comes in late. The time is ebbing away... This is where Dukurs

0:11:18 > 0:11:24could lose on his speed. The mistake at the top, it is two hundredths,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28that is all we need.He is in the red...

0:11:28 > 0:11:36CHEERING He is behind Dom Parsons!

0:11:36 > 0:11:42Unbelievably, he has his medal!Come on, Great Britain!Dom Parsons has a

0:11:42 > 0:11:53bronze medal because Martins Dukurs was unable to hold it together. The

0:11:53 > 0:11:58great Latvian. Settle back and enjoy what we think will be the gold medal

0:11:58 > 0:12:04performance from Yun of Korea, starting a mile clear of his

0:12:04 > 0:12:08competitors. One save run will see him reach the gold medal he. No

0:12:08 > 0:12:14Asian athlete has ever won a medal. Yun is seconds away from the gold.

0:12:14 > 0:12:20He is a superstar in Korea. He wins by the biggest margin in history! A

0:12:20 > 0:12:28track record to finish off. 1.63 seconds. Incredible for Yuna track

0:12:28 > 0:12:34record, the fourth run and absolutely smashing it. We do have a

0:12:34 > 0:12:39bronze medal for Great Britain with Dom Parsons.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Bronze medallist at the Olympic Games, the first medallist for Team

0:12:43 > 0:12:48GB here at Pyeongchang. Give us your reaction? It hasn't sunk in yet. I

0:12:48 > 0:12:56thought I had lost it. After the fourth run, I thought it had gone

0:12:56 > 0:13:05away. I looked at the time, made a couple too many mistakes in that run

0:13:05 > 0:13:11Bert Martins made more. The last person I thought. You're great on

0:13:11 > 0:13:23TLC, she is 93, she has stayed up too?-- your great Aunt Elsie.

0:13:23 > 0:13:28STUDIO: This was Dom Parsons being awarded his bronze medal, the man

0:13:28 > 0:13:34from Walthamstow. The first man to win a skeleton medal since 1948 for

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Great Britain. He was still doing the maths to know whether he made it

0:13:38 > 0:13:44back onto the podium. He has, he did. That is his for life. I caught

0:13:44 > 0:13:52up with the Olympic gold medallist from 2010 Amy Williams.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55We saw him go through the range of despair and delight? We were doing

0:13:55 > 0:14:00the same in the commentary box! I don't know how he held it together!

0:14:00 > 0:14:10He put down such good runs. The final run... He slipped down! And

0:14:10 > 0:14:12final run... He slipped down! And we saw Dukurs coming down. That was it.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17He thought he had lost it and suddenly he was in the bronze

0:14:17 > 0:14:20position and have that medal.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22Amy Williams was so

0:14:22 > 0:14:24Amy Williams was so thrilled. Alex Coomber was watching it earlier.

0:14:24 > 0:14:35Your thoughts on who was the best on all four runs? This race was a

0:14:35 > 0:14:38unique race. It is unlike any other track we have been on. The fastest

0:14:38 > 0:14:41starters were not necessarily getting those medals. Ironically

0:14:41 > 0:14:47between the medallists we have the fastest starter and the 21st

0:14:47 > 0:14:53starter. The Koreans had an advantage, they had been on the

0:14:53 > 0:14:57track a lot and from Yun Sungbin we saw that his steering, he basically

0:14:57 > 0:15:02got it down to only really needing to do small toe taps. You will see

0:15:02 > 0:15:07other sliders shifting their body weight as they go through the bends

0:15:07 > 0:15:10but he knew it so well that the toe-tapping was enough for him and

0:15:10 > 0:15:16he literally had the fastest time on every split.

0:15:16 > 0:15:21A lovely, sunny day on the sliding track and they wanted to see South

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Korea's first gold medal is not on skates. They have won Bundu short

0:15:25 > 0:15:30track speed skating, one in speed skating and one in figure skating.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Watch him going down, his toe just comes out, it is not a reaction

0:15:33 > 0:15:36because he thinks he is doing something wrong, he's purposely

0:15:36 > 0:15:42using it to steer, then bringing his legs nice and close together again,

0:15:42 > 0:15:48getting a good aerodynamic position and he is only steering when he

0:15:49 > 0:15:52really needs to which created a lot of speed down the track. He was head

0:15:52 > 0:15:55and shoulders above the rest but Dom Parsons was close to winning a

0:15:55 > 0:15:58silver medal, had he not made that mistake in his fourth run, he would

0:15:58 > 0:16:01have got a civil, but so would Martins Dukurs have got a silver if

0:16:01 > 0:16:05he did well in his last run. He looked disappointed, though after

0:16:05 > 0:16:10his run because he thought that was it, Don.He was two hundredths off

0:16:10 > 0:16:13the silver in the end, we always knew there would be chopping and

0:16:13 > 0:16:16changing places which made it exciting. They have a start record

0:16:16 > 0:16:19on the track and the downtime record but they don't have the top speed

0:16:19 > 0:16:24record and if they did, Dom had Beattie fastest top speeds ever of a

0:16:24 > 0:16:30men's skeleton on that track, he was the only slider to break 81 mph.He

0:16:30 > 0:16:35becomes the first man to win medal in skeleton since John Cramond in

0:16:35 > 0:16:391948 and you have got to look at this picture because just to admire

0:16:39 > 0:16:43his helmet! He was an RAF pilot in World War II who came back into the

0:16:43 > 0:16:51sport of sliding when the war ended and went to the games in 1948 and

0:16:51 > 0:16:53won a bronze medal and ended up writing on winter sports for the

0:16:53 > 0:16:58Observer so he was a wonderful guy within Winter sports but John

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Cramond, who died in 1978, the last man before Dom Parsons.I think he

0:17:02 > 0:17:05would have been very proud. Thankfully technology has got

0:17:05 > 0:17:14better. Underneath your neck.The style as well!The women have been

0:17:14 > 0:17:16more successful in the 21st century and we will be reflecting on Lizzie

0:17:16 > 0:17:21and Laura and how they got on later. That is the very short list of six

0:17:21 > 0:17:25British men who have won individual medals at the Winter Olympics and

0:17:25 > 0:17:28obviously, Chris has won a gold medal but as part of a pair so you

0:17:28 > 0:17:30don't get in.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32Andrew Musgrave was hoping to write his name onto that list

0:17:32 > 0:17:34in the 15k cross country race.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36After Britain's best ever showing in the skiathlon on Sunday,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39where he finished seventh, Musgrave was aiming for better.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Every four years they change from classic style to freestyle,

0:17:44 > 0:17:47which Musgrave much prefers but amongst a field

0:17:47 > 0:17:53of 119 from 62 different countries, Musgrave melted.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57He said he went off slowly intentionally but could never pick

0:17:57 > 0:18:02up the pace and admitted to having a shocker as he finished only 28th

0:18:02 > 0:18:06more than two minutes behind the historic winner -

0:18:06 > 0:18:11Switzerland's Dario Cologna, who became the first cross-country

0:18:11 > 0:18:19skier to win the same individual event three times in a row.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25COMMENTATOR: This is going to be awesome. Lindsey Jacobellis

0:18:25 > 0:18:28extending her lead in the early stage of the course! She has got the

0:18:28 > 0:18:34clear line. This is a lap of honour for Lindsey Jacobellis, the

0:18:34 > 0:18:40American... Oh, drama! Lindsey Jacobellis is down! This is

0:18:40 > 0:18:43incredible! Lindsey Jacobellis has thrown her gold medal away in the

0:18:43 > 0:18:48last 100 metres. This is ridiculous.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Such drama in the women's snowboard cross - can't believe

0:18:51 > 0:18:52that was 12 years ago.

0:18:52 > 0:18:57Aged 32, Lindsey Jacobellis is still hunting for that elusive

0:18:57 > 0:19:01gold medal but snapping at her heels are some very talented youngsters.

0:19:01 > 0:19:08Expect 16-year-old Julia Pereira de Sousa from France to push her close.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12The first of four quarterfinals saw Zoe Gillings Brier going for GB.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14She needed to finish in the top three to progress to the semis.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Zoe, here in the white bib, looked like she might make it

0:19:17 > 0:19:23through after overtaking on the inside into third position.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25But defending Olympic champion Eva Samkova snuck past, denying Zoe

0:19:25 > 0:19:28a spot in the semifinals.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32The 32-year-old mum was pleased with that finish,

0:19:32 > 0:19:34and we pick up the action with the first semifinal.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37Here's Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood...

0:19:40 > 0:19:45COMMENTATOR: Keep an eye on Lindsey Jacobellis in the green bid. Eva

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Samkova, the favourite in red, Charlotte Banks, Nelly Moenne

0:19:48 > 0:19:53Loccoz, blue and yellow, Alexandra Jekova in white and the Blackbeard

0:19:53 > 0:19:58of the Canadian, Tess Critchlow. Here we go, the first semifinal,

0:19:58 > 0:20:05this will be good. Eva Samkova goes out brilliantly in the master

0:20:05 > 0:20:09trousers.Charlotte Bankes again with a brilliant start and then a

0:20:09 > 0:20:15terrible bird bath.Or going big, Lindsey Jacobellis in the green.

0:20:15 > 0:20:20Nelly Moenne Loccoz leading with Lindy Jacobo somehow yields. The

0:20:20 > 0:20:23white bib proving lucky for Alexandra Jekova who is making a

0:20:23 > 0:20:27move on the Frenchwoman.Brilliant squash from Jacko Palace, taking all

0:20:27 > 0:20:32of the jump and went long and low and now she's got three metres out

0:20:32 > 0:20:36in front of Eva Samkova. Nelly Moenne Loccoz on the inside, all the

0:20:36 > 0:20:40way through, Charlotte Bankes, from nowhere, how did she get from the

0:20:40 > 0:20:44back to the front? She was not able to make it stick although she tried

0:20:44 > 0:20:48to force Lindsey Jacobellis who can now apply the flush and crush on

0:20:48 > 0:20:54her. Riding light to the top of the corner. On the inside!Alexandra

0:20:54 > 0:20:57Jekova almost down and now back to back, she over jumped, Charlotte

0:20:57 > 0:21:02Bankes is out and Eva Samkova takes advantage, sliding into second,

0:21:02 > 0:21:06Alexandra Jekova in third, behind Lindsey Jacobellis who looks to be

0:21:06 > 0:21:11losing speed on her on the home straight.Eva Samkova, the Olympic

0:21:11 > 0:21:14champion in a master trousers, can ride the final straight so well and

0:21:14 > 0:21:18Lindsey Jacobellis with a nervous look over her shoulder. She will

0:21:18 > 0:21:22remain in second and advance but that is a warning shot to Lindsey

0:21:22 > 0:21:26Jacobellis. She needs to be further ahead in the final on the straight

0:21:26 > 0:21:30if she wants to take the win because she has not got the speed that Eva

0:21:30 > 0:21:34Samkova has.

0:21:41 > 0:21:48Back up to the top again now for the second of the semifinals. There is

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Julia Pereira De Sousa Mabileau.16 years old, were racing way beyond

0:21:52 > 0:21:56her years and there is no short of talent on this side of the draw,

0:21:56 > 0:22:00either.And the youngster has gone out like a wet cat, absolutely

0:22:00 > 0:22:07flying, here. So she obviously didn't read the script. Both of the

0:22:07 > 0:22:17French upfront with Michaela Moy. -- the Italian flying through the

0:22:17 > 0:22:20section but Pereira De Sousa, tucked in behind them and it is actually

0:22:20 > 0:22:27Chloe Trespeuch shoe dies out in front. -- who dives out in front.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49thank you to the team as well, I still think the Italian outfit are

0:25:49 > 0:25:53the best so they get a gold medal for that and that is their second

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Now to the men's super-g, the second fastest alpine

0:26:03 > 0:26:04event after the downhill.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06There's more control gates, making it more of a technical discipline,

0:26:06 > 0:26:11but it's still a case of get down that mountain as fast as you can!

0:26:11 > 0:26:14It was bright and clear for the superfast super-g and first of the

0:26:14 > 0:26:17big names that was the defending champion.

0:26:17 > 0:26:23With Norwegian posted an early target time of 1:24.60 two. His

0:26:23 > 0:26:27compatriot, Aksel Lund Svindal al, was going for the speed double,

0:26:27 > 0:26:31never done before by a man at the same games. But he could not nudge

0:26:31 > 0:26:37his fellow Norwegian off top spot. Up next was an Austrian skiing

0:26:37 > 0:26:42legend, and Matthias Mayer got off to a flyer with a run of power,

0:26:42 > 0:26:46aggression and precision, setting a brilliant time of 1:24.40 four. Beat

0:26:46 > 0:26:54that!Yes!World champion beat Furze was the last of the super-g stars to

0:26:54 > 0:26:58grace the slopes, a slight slip midway down cost him dearly. He

0:26:58 > 0:27:02would have to settle for silver, behind that Common Mateus Maier.

0:27:02 > 0:27:07After his downhill gold in 2014, the Austrian becomes only the second man

0:27:07 > 0:27:12to win gold in both the downhill and super-g discipline the Olympics.

0:27:12 > 0:27:21Beat Furze took the silver and Kjetil Jansrud the bronze.

0:27:30 > 0:27:31It's that time again.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Here's Paddy with the latest from the Game of Stones.

0:27:38 > 0:27:44In the women's competition, a day on from Britain's team your head, but

0:27:44 > 0:27:49meanwhile, out on the ice, something strange has been happening. This is

0:27:49 > 0:27:54the Canadian team, as near as you can get to stone cold certainties in

0:27:54 > 0:28:02this sport. And they keep losing. Three games, three defeats, and this

0:28:02 > 0:28:08is what they are saying in Canada. Bottom of the round robin, a

0:28:08 > 0:28:12sweeping change is needed if they are to avoid an unthinkable early

0:28:12 > 0:28:17exit. Normal rank on the men's rink, Canada top but Britain's Dean Smith

0:28:17 > 0:28:23were still in touch and up against the second favourites, Sweden, and

0:28:23 > 0:28:26their formidable skip. But Kyle Smith and crew did not fear the

0:28:26 > 0:28:31Norsemen. In fact, in the third end, the Swedes were left with no way out

0:28:31 > 0:28:35and the Brits did the pillaging. Great Britain stealing, to keep the

0:28:35 > 0:28:40pressure on.Despite not having the final shot, points are rarer get

0:28:40 > 0:28:43such skilled opponents and it would get even better for Smith and

0:28:43 > 0:28:49company.There you go, nice shot, Kyle Smith continuing a great form

0:28:49 > 0:28:53he has shown already this evening. Halfway through, 5-3 up but then the

0:28:53 > 0:28:56Swedes started turning the stones with some supreme work, taking a

0:28:56 > 0:29:03crucial three. 6-6 going into the ninth end but for all Smith's

0:29:03 > 0:29:06excellent early work, this was the defining shot of the match, he

0:29:06 > 0:29:13needed to clear out both red stones here. He's missed it! Over and

0:29:13 > 0:29:16probably out. Well, what a chance that was. You won't get too many of

0:29:16 > 0:29:23them.Sweden took tee, leaving Britain needing to do the same in

0:29:23 > 0:29:27the final end, always unlikely. This was curling's version of a knockout

0:29:27 > 0:29:33blow. -- Sweden took two. He's going to go and that's it, Sweden know

0:29:33 > 0:29:37they've been in a tough match against Great Britain, two wins and

0:29:37 > 0:29:41two losses after four.Three of the medal hopefuls in the first four

0:29:41 > 0:29:44games but we are one of those medal hopeful so we know we need to

0:29:44 > 0:29:47compete against them and we do compete against them, we are just as

0:29:47 > 0:29:51good as them on any given day and I think we showed that today. We are

0:29:51 > 0:29:57disappointed but it is not the end of the world.

0:29:57 > 0:29:58Still to come.

0:29:58 > 0:29:59Can Hanyu do it again?

0:29:59 > 0:30:03The man from Japan starts the defence of his singles title.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05One down, three to go.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08Mikaela Shiffren tries to slalom her way to a second gold of the Games.

0:30:08 > 0:30:13She's aiming for four.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16Great in practice - now Lizzy Yarnold and Laura Deas

0:30:16 > 0:30:18hope to go even better in the real thing.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21Hold on tight for the first two rounds of the skeleton.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09silk and chiffon!

0:31:09 > 0:31:10Onto ice skating and the men's singles.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Expect jumps like you've never seen before.

0:32:21 > 0:32:27the roar! And the roof comes off the rink! Sublime from the defending

0:32:27 > 0:32:36Olympic champion. This is one of the strangest sights in sport, the

0:32:36 > 0:32:40shower of Winnie the Pooh bears. It's an Olympic record. Over to the

0:32:40 > 0:32:46king of the quads, Nathan Chen, the only athlete to land five in a

0:32:51 > 0:32:58COMMENTATOR: The opening combination... The quadrupole Lutz

0:32:58 > 0:33:04and down. He would have wanted that combination but he fell. And also on

0:33:04 > 0:33:10the triple axel... He has gone. There has been so much attention on

0:33:10 > 0:33:16this young man's shoulders. He is 18 years old. Because of what he can

0:33:16 > 0:33:18achieve at his best but you get the impression this may not be his

0:33:18 > 0:33:28games.Even Tigger couldn't bounce back. Nathan Chen was only 17th and

0:33:28 > 0:33:33his medal chances seemingly out of sight. Up next, Shoma Uno from

0:33:33 > 0:33:38Japan, famed as the first man to successfully land a quadruple flip

0:33:38 > 0:33:46in competition. Could he make it a Japanese one two. COMMENTATOR: The

0:34:14 > 0:34:20is retiring at the age of 26 after these last games. He turned to

0:34:20 > 0:34:25Charlie Chaplin for his inspiration. COMMENTATOR: It's a triple toe

0:34:57 > 0:35:02Would Jin Boyang's routine be snappy enough to get the lead? COMMENTATOR:

0:35:45 > 0:35:49the quad, isn't he?He has not been beaten this season and going into

0:35:49 > 0:35:53the competition, in America, it was a given that he would come away with

0:36:31 > 0:36:32do?

0:36:32 > 0:36:35history today, what did Vincent Zhou do?He made a quad Lutz for the

0:37:06 > 0:37:15most beautiful storyteller is Javier Fernandez?Yes, he tells a story,

0:37:15 > 0:37:21this is the Charlie Chaplin routine that he was performing. The jumps

0:37:21 > 0:37:25are immaculate. He is tidy in the air, he has a clean landing. He

0:39:15 > 0:39:19retain her title? It seemed inevitable. This is her signature

0:39:19 > 0:39:22event. She started in an accomplished style and was fourth

0:39:22 > 0:39:30after her first run.In good shape as she goes for the double.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34Meanwhile, the slalom specialist was flying. In second place. But Wendy

0:40:05 > 0:40:12Her advantage is significant. It looked like the wind has eased off

0:40:12 > 0:40:17for Mikaela Shiffrin. She finds the worst of it. A clean start. Four

0:40:17 > 0:40:22racers in the past have done the GS and Olympic double in the same

0:40:22 > 0:40:35games. Andrea Mead Lawrence has done it. The first mistake for Mikaela

0:40:35 > 0:40:44Shiffrin. In 2002, in Salt Lake City. Can Mikaela Shiffrin do it?

0:40:44 > 0:40:50Not only is she looking for the GS slalom double, she is looking to

0:40:50 > 0:40:55defend the slalom gold. She won four years ago in Sochi. Finishing with

0:40:55 > 0:40:59incredible speed! She gets into second. She will not make it two

0:40:59 > 0:41:05gold medals. She made that mistake, that error cost her the chance to

0:41:05 > 0:41:16lead the race. Next, poised for the final time today and on her way,

0:41:16 > 0:41:21Frida Hansdotter. She had a solid fast run. And Goode giant slalom day

0:41:21 > 0:41:29yesterday. She likes this hill. A majority of her advantage is intact.

0:41:39 > 0:41:45Hansdotter has never won and Olympic medal. Can she put that right today?

0:41:45 > 0:41:53She was sixth in the giant slalom yesterday. The former World Cup

0:42:06 > 0:42:12silver at worst.

0:42:12 > 0:42:17silver at worst. The last skier... Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. She

0:42:25 > 0:42:30Holdener trailing by a 100th of a second. She has got the worst of the

0:42:30 > 0:42:34wind. It is whipping in from the skiers left to the skiers right. Up

0:42:34 > 0:42:43into the goggles. She hasn't done much damage. Here on in, she could

0:42:43 > 0:42:49begin to relax a little more. She has got to push through every one of

0:43:35 > 0:43:36of the games. Christopher Dean makes an elegant exit. Tell me about Frida

0:43:36 > 0:43:40Hansdotter?She is consistent, she has delivered all season. She has

0:43:40 > 0:43:45got second places, five of them. Always the bridesmaid. Today she

0:43:45 > 0:43:49lifted her game. I don't want people to think she won today because

0:43:49 > 0:43:58Mikaela Shiffrin had an off day, she deserved it. She charged like I've

0:43:58 > 0:44:03never seen her do before. She was really calculated. And the major

0:44:03 > 0:44:06shock is Mikaela Shiffrin isn't even on the podium?

0:44:08 > 0:44:10victories in this discipline committee hasn't been beaten in a

0:44:10 > 0:44:15major tournament since 2011 but she looked off. We know that she vomited

0:44:15 > 0:44:20before the first run. She wasn't all there today. There was hesitation in

0:44:20 > 0:44:25her skiing, we never see that. There is a lot of norovirus going around,

0:44:25 > 0:44:31well over 300 cases.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33well over 300 cases. It's very disappointing for Mikaela Shiffrin,

0:44:33 > 0:44:35more chances for her to come.

0:44:35 > 0:44:37Well, one skeleton competition down and one Olympic medal.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40Now it's the turn of the women, Laura Deas went fast in practice

0:44:40 > 0:44:43and Lizzy Yarnold is looking to become the first ever Brit

0:44:43 > 0:44:46to defend a Winter Olympic title.

0:44:51 > 0:44:59Laura Dees, one of the fastest starters in the field...

0:44:59 > 0:45:06starters in the field...It is down to you, in that moment. Nobody else.

0:45:06 > 0:45:15I love this sport. I am in it because I want to win.Lizzy Yarnold

0:45:15 > 0:45:17is the Olympic champion!

0:45:23 > 0:45:28Welcome to be Sliding Centre, as 20 women prepared to go for their first

0:45:28 > 0:45:33heat of the skeleton. Lizzy Yarnold, the defending champion, goes off in

0:45:33 > 0:45:3814th in this opening round, Laura Deas is intent.Excitement in the

0:45:38 > 0:45:44camp is as you would imagine, it is huge. Everyone on cloud nine and the

0:45:44 > 0:45:48girls, they have been concentrating on their race, they've got to go out

0:45:48 > 0:45:51today and do what they've done in training. Both have been putting

0:45:51 > 0:45:58down the fastest runs and

0:45:58 > 0:46:00down the fastest runs and they are in a really good place. We are on

0:46:00 > 0:46:03the track where it is really cold. The ice will be very hard. Then

0:46:03 > 0:46:06they've got to stay and keep cool, they are both good enough to bring

0:46:06 > 0:46:12home a medal. Day one and we are very excited!

0:46:12 > 0:46:16Jacqueline Lolling from Germany is without doubt the most excess will

0:46:16 > 0:46:20scan it and Olympian in the last 18 months. The preevent favourite, a

0:46:20 > 0:46:26bit of corrective work to do early. Because of the group they are using

0:46:26 > 0:46:30on the left-hand side is all sort of just giving them a bit of a waddle

0:46:30 > 0:46:35because it is not quite cut properly. This is one of the best

0:46:35 > 0:46:39sliders, she takes a high, diving line-out. Maybe that is her style

0:46:39 > 0:46:44and she needs to use this to get the speed in and use the exit of 70 per

0:46:44 > 0:46:46Sivera crossing to wait as she now builds speed into the crucial

0:46:46 > 0:46:53corner.Looking beautiful so far, perfect line, her body position, she

0:46:53 > 0:46:58looks cool and calm on the thread, so far, I reckon we're going to see

0:46:58 > 0:47:05another track record.Definitely, coming up the hill, but she going to

0:47:05 > 0:47:10Berlin from even further?Absolutely superb, the world champion, just

0:47:10 > 0:47:14setting the mark a little bit higher. Laura Dees is next. Laura,

0:47:14 > 0:47:21the 29-year-old, her first Olympics. Has start time, exactly what I was

0:47:21 > 0:47:25hoping for. She has got an incredible start. She is a strong

0:47:25 > 0:47:31and powerful girl.Number seven in the world, two higher than Lizzy

0:47:31 > 0:47:35Yarnold, she has started the run well. She certainly has an cheesy

0:47:35 > 0:47:39using the corners well to push her across and in and around the track,

0:47:39 > 0:47:43to try to use the track to her benefit and get where she needs to

0:47:43 > 0:47:49be by not doing too much. Is she losing a bit of time? That will be a

0:47:49 > 0:47:53costly mistake but is it enough to just keep her in the mix? Because of

0:47:53 > 0:47:58her start, we know these speeds, she will lose a couple of tenths by the

0:47:58 > 0:48:03time she gets across the line.As long as she does not lose too much,

0:48:03 > 0:48:07that rub on ten down the chicane might be costly for Laura Deas, and

0:48:07 > 0:48:16suddenly, she is two tenths behind. Lazy time. She cannot win a medal on

0:48:16 > 0:48:19this run but she can certainly lose it with mistake so she needs one in

0:48:19 > 0:48:29the bag. She has been sliding well all week. She is a quality athlete.

0:48:29 > 0:48:33The Olympic champion, Lizzy Yarnold, underway.A couple of mistakes

0:48:33 > 0:48:38between four and five. She is settling into the sled. She's an

0:48:38 > 0:48:42Olympic champion and a quality athlete but she has got the pressure

0:48:42 > 0:48:48on these games of wanting to keep hold of her title. One of the better

0:48:48 > 0:48:53runs in. Is it enough? Is she going to lose speed by having to do too

0:48:53 > 0:48:56much work? This could be the run that puts her at the top of the pile

0:48:56 > 0:49:00going into the second one. It's going to be close, needs to be clean

0:49:00 > 0:49:04out of 15, close to the right-hand wall, the final turn to home and she

0:49:04 > 0:49:11goes first! Quicker than Jacqueline Lolling.Having a little chat,

0:49:11 > 0:49:15whether there is an issue with her, I'm not quite sure. She did not look

0:49:15 > 0:49:22happy, there.Lizzy Yarnold leading after the first run. Run two is not

0:49:22 > 0:49:31far away.Let's open Laura has gone away, all she needed to do was get

0:49:31 > 0:49:35her steering better in corner nine and have a clean straight.Laura

0:49:35 > 0:49:39Deas is underway. She needs a big run, she needs to settle into her

0:49:39 > 0:49:46run and do what you did before it but make the small adjustment in the

0:49:46 > 0:49:49corner down towards the Dragon's tale, the top part of the track was

0:49:49 > 0:49:53really good but she started to lose a bit of speed as she came into

0:49:53 > 0:49:56corner eight, maybe doing a bit too much on the sled to achieve the

0:49:56 > 0:50:01line. Now she's relaxed, can she find the speed here? This is the big

0:50:01 > 0:50:06part.Good girl, she's done it, nailed it, come on, keep it

0:50:06 > 0:50:14together, she's got to stay relaxed and

0:50:14 > 0:50:16and keep position in the uphill section and I think she will hold

0:50:16 > 0:50:20onto the lead. She's got to go, really, I think under 52 seconds at

0:50:20 > 0:50:23the finish. 16, again a wobble. She has not quite got under 52 seconds

0:50:23 > 0:50:27but how that will affect her final standings after run two, we will

0:50:27 > 0:50:34have to wait and see.

0:50:34 > 0:50:38Lizzy Yarnold, then, off and on her way.She is so good at performing

0:50:38 > 0:50:42under pressure. She loves the pressure, Sheila was the thrill, and

0:50:42 > 0:50:48she always competes really well in four run races, like World

0:50:48 > 0:50:53Championships and Olympic Games, there's always four runs over two

0:50:53 > 0:50:56days... She just made the same mistake some other sliders have made

0:50:56 > 0:50:59in the top part of the track so she needs to keep it together and keep

0:50:59 > 0:51:04calm, still a lot of time in the lead.If you make mistakes, recover

0:51:04 > 0:51:08well. She needs to do that. Definitely and she's just about got

0:51:08 > 0:51:11away with it, coming through a bit sideways, I think that might cost

0:51:11 > 0:51:15her some speed so is it enough for her to stay in front of Jenin

0:51:15 > 0:51:18because this will be close? I think she might drop behind the Austrian

0:51:18 > 0:51:23as we go into the second day. This will be very close between

0:51:23 > 0:51:27Jacqueline Lolling, Janine Flock and Lizzy Yarnold who finishes now,

0:51:27 > 0:51:32dropped back to third place, a tenth of a second off the leader. Lizzy

0:51:32 > 0:51:35Yarnold and Laura Deas for Great Britain, third and fourth and still

0:51:35 > 0:51:40very much in this Olympic event. It was a much faster track than it had

0:51:40 > 0:51:43been in training.

0:51:45 > 0:51:49I have got a bit of a sore throat and sign has been going on.Was that

0:51:49 > 0:51:53the issue at the end of the first run?I'm struggling to breathe

0:51:53 > 0:51:57enough. It is a brilliant track and has been a great first night of

0:51:57 > 0:52:00racing. This is the bit I love, going home and everybody getting

0:52:00 > 0:52:05nervous and I get a great night's sleep and then fighting again

0:52:05 > 0:52:08tomorrow.They are both in a good position at the moment, very close

0:52:08 > 0:52:11to the top and really tight so it's going to be a great couple of runs

0:52:11 > 0:52:15tomorrow. Yeah, I will be shutting myself hoarse. It's really nice to

0:52:15 > 0:52:20be sitting in fourth, only seven hundredths out of the medals. How

0:52:20 > 0:52:24much of an inspiration was done today? It was a emotional watching

0:52:24 > 0:52:28it go from heartbreak to elation in the space of a few minutes! What an

0:52:28 > 0:52:32inspiration. He has worked so hard for so many years and I'm so pleased

0:52:32 > 0:52:38for him that it came out in the end. You could tell how much Laura Deas

0:52:38 > 0:52:42is enjoying the experience, moving up from six to fourth after two

0:52:42 > 0:52:45runs, Lizzy Yarnold fastest on the first run, not quite so smooth on

0:52:45 > 0:52:48the second and she is in third but only a tenth of a second behind the

0:52:48 > 0:52:54leader. Alex, everything to play for, there. This race is turning out

0:52:54 > 0:52:58as we thought, the same as the men, chopping and changing, they are

0:52:58 > 0:53:02faster, not as fast, coming first or ninth, getting the top speed and

0:53:02 > 0:53:06then a slower start. Amongst the girls, Lizzy Yarnold set a track

0:53:06 > 0:53:09record but she did not have a top speed, Jacqueline Lolling had the

0:53:09 > 0:53:13top speed but she did not have the fastest art, Chanel had the fastest

0:53:13 > 0:53:19art and then Laura in the second run was two hundredths of the fastest

0:53:19 > 0:53:23downtime so they are all in the mix. You don't know what will happen.I

0:53:23 > 0:53:26was worried about Lizzy Yarnold at the end of the first run and you

0:53:26 > 0:53:31could see her saying she felt dizzy and the performance analyst had to

0:53:31 > 0:53:35help her up and off the track and she said afterwards she was

0:53:35 > 0:53:40struggling to breathe. She is not 100% right, whatever she says.Know

0:53:40 > 0:53:45and hopefully it is nothing to worry about but she did not look 100%. She

0:53:45 > 0:53:49said that there's a lot of dust and it is very cold and we know that she

0:53:49 > 0:53:53has suffered in the past from this problem with her balance and her

0:53:53 > 0:53:57ears. She did a second run, not as good as the first but she still

0:53:57 > 0:54:02ended up right in the mix. Tomorrow is another day.The second run was

0:54:02 > 0:54:08not just a case of one mistake, it was all a bit...From top to bottom,

0:54:08 > 0:54:12if we are perfectly honest, it was not great. She did not look

0:54:12 > 0:54:15comfortable. She was skittish, trying to work against the sled a

0:54:15 > 0:54:19bit and maybe she needs to get down the run, get it out of the way and

0:54:19 > 0:54:23focus on tomorrow. How impressed were you with Laura Deas,

0:54:23 > 0:54:27particularly the second run?She was amazing, almost the perfect run,

0:54:27 > 0:54:31literally, very little you can criticise about it and having had

0:54:31 > 0:54:35not such a great first run, I think the mental ability to come back and

0:54:35 > 0:54:39really fight hard for the second one shows that she is not going to let

0:54:39 > 0:54:43anyone walk over her and I think she's definitely one to watch

0:54:43 > 0:54:46tomorrow.Third and fourth runs to come tomorrow morning. We will be

0:54:46 > 0:54:52live with both of them... We are on BBC Two now but we will be on BBC

0:54:52 > 0:54:55One tomorrow.

0:54:55 > 0:55:00Here's Paddy with the best of the rest from Pyeongchang.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02Another day, another that speed skating gold medal, this time Esmee

0:55:02 > 0:55:06Visser in the women's 5000 metres. She was not even expected to make

0:55:06 > 0:55:10the squad which tells you something about the Netherlands' depth in this

0:55:10 > 0:55:14sport, they have no won six out of seven speed skating gold medals at

0:55:14 > 0:55:18this games and a Dutchman turned Canadian won the other one. Now to

0:55:18 > 0:55:22the top seed world of the women's freestyle aerials, only two the six

0:55:22 > 0:55:25finalists landed clean jumps and one of those was the winner, Hanna

0:55:25 > 0:55:30Huskova, who picked up Belarussian's first gold of the limpets. The

0:55:30 > 0:55:34catchily titled Olympic Athletes from Russia were fancied to win

0:55:34 > 0:55:38men's ice hockey gold but lost their first match to Slovakia. They took

0:55:38 > 0:55:42their frustration out on poor old Slovenia, finishing 8-2, and the

0:55:42 > 0:55:46Americans next. It's been an eventful few days for the Jamaican

0:55:46 > 0:55:49bobsleigh team. First their coach walked out and threatened to charge

0:55:49 > 0:55:54them to use the sled, which she said she was responsible for. Now be a

0:55:54 > 0:56:01producer is providing an alternative sled. Maybe they

0:56:01 > 0:56:03sled. Maybe they will make a movie about it one day! Ski jumping was in

0:56:03 > 0:56:05the original Winter Olympics and Robert Johansson has the moustache

0:56:05 > 0:56:08of a man who might have been there in 1924. Nothing old-fashioned in

0:56:08 > 0:56:10his technique today, though, this magnificent man turned flying

0:56:10 > 0:56:17machine leads the way for Norway in the qualifying for the large hill.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21The first day Germany have not won a gold medal but they are still at the

0:56:21 > 0:56:28top of the table. We are in 21st spot, Great Britain with our bronze.

0:56:28 > 0:56:31Let's go off piste...

0:56:33 > 0:56:37A bit of a theme to the various messages we have had today, kids

0:56:37 > 0:56:42being creative, curling Lego although I'm nodule De Smidt for the

0:56:42 > 0:56:46stones. A jelly bowl on the head and a colander, good use of kitchen

0:56:46 > 0:56:55utensils.Nice body position! And there is the two man Bob. Look at

0:56:55 > 0:56:59this, curling in the kitchen and look at our detailed this is. They

0:56:59 > 0:57:09have built a house.Commitment. Let's go for red-hot, ice-cold.

0:57:09 > 0:57:17First up in slalom, you have been telling us about out of all the

0:57:17 > 0:57:21other.She's not fighting it. She's still going.Still going, picking up

0:57:21 > 0:57:28speed, still going. All of the fuss over the VA are in football, all you

0:57:28 > 0:57:33need is to be a dextrous referee. Look at this in ice hockey, getting

0:57:33 > 0:57:39in there, no goal-line technology needed, I can see it is not a goal.

0:57:39 > 0:57:44Next it is women's freestyle skiing aerials. As Tom Petty once said, I'm

0:57:44 > 0:57:48free, free falling, it has got to hurt but what a recovery. She tried

0:57:48 > 0:57:56to style it out but her is will be burning because look at her coach!

0:57:56 > 0:58:00Say what you really think! Finally, proof that hot countries can compete

0:58:00 > 0:58:07at the Winter Olympics, this is Nigeria in the women's skeleton.

0:58:07 > 0:58:16Next it is the housewives favourite, double's topless flag beret who put

0:58:16 > 0:58:20clothes on today, finishing last but proudly carrying the Mexican flag,

0:58:20 > 0:58:26live long, the Olympic spirit! Tomorrow's

0:58:26 > 0:58:27live long, the Olympic spirit! Tomorrow's schedule is super

0:58:27 > 0:58:32exciting. What would your words B-2 Elise Christie going in the 1500

0:58:32 > 0:58:36metres?Don't overthink it, do your thing, trust your instincts. She is

0:58:36 > 0:58:39hopefully going to have quarterfinals, semifinals and final

0:58:39 > 0:58:43tomorrow morning and the final two runs for Laura Deas and Lizzy

0:58:43 > 0:58:48Yarnold.Possibly the most exciting skeleton race we have ever seen,

0:58:48 > 0:58:52definitely.If that isn't inspiration to tune in, I don't know

0:58:52 > 0:59:02what is, and if you get up early, Izzy Atkin, you will see Katie

0:59:02 > 0:59:04Summerhayes as well, both of them with World Championship medals,

0:59:04 > 0:59:06going in the sling slopestyle and I would like to mention another

0:59:06 > 0:59:09programme if you want to change weight from live sport, there is a

0:59:09 > 0:59:13Winter Olympics special Pointers at 6:25pm on BBC One tomorrow. I was

0:59:13 > 0:59:17competing with Jenny Jones and Amy Williams was there as well, Robin

0:59:17 > 0:59:20Cousins, Wilf O'Reilly, Jayne Torvill, it was a heck of a line-up

0:59:20 > 0:59:25so watch it! Team GB's first medal of the games is in the bag. After

0:59:25 > 0:59:35the provider. See you tomorrow. Bush Parsons the provider.

0:59:51 > 1:00:00Christie is out of it once again!
