:01:03. > :01:12.Good evening and welcome back to Sochi, to the Winter Olympics of
:01:13. > :01:16.2014. It's 11. 10pm. Soon we will be head up to the mountains for the
:01:17. > :01:25.final gold medal on day one of the Games and that will be in the
:01:26. > :01:28.women's moguls. Everyone still reacting to the Opening Ceremony.
:01:29. > :01:32.The Russians seem happy with that display. Lots of reaction at home. I
:01:33. > :01:35.asked my seven-year-old nephew what he thought, he said it looked very
:01:36. > :01:40.expensive. Which it was indeed. A lot of money lavished on these
:01:41. > :01:43.venues. The athletes are enjoying the facilities. It's time now for
:01:44. > :01:47.the sport to live up to all that investment and very much take
:01:48. > :01:51.centre-stage. This is the highlights programme that will be with you
:01:52. > :02:04.every evening. This is what we have coming up:
:02:05. > :02:16.In a moment we will be live with the women's moguls final.
:02:17. > :02:26.We have highlights from a magnificent men's snowboard
:02:27. > :02:31.slopestyle final. And we bring you all the news from
:02:32. > :02:38.the cross-country and biathlon centre for a day of history.
:02:39. > :02:43.Don't forget you can get in touch with us. This is how, if you are on
:02:44. > :02:47.social media use the hashtag BBC Sochi and we will see exactly what
:02:48. > :02:53.you are thinking. You will have seen the women's moguls, if you have been
:02:54. > :03:00.watching. We will head back out to the park. I want to ask you a
:03:01. > :03:05.question about what they're wearing, given it's a speed sport, how come
:03:06. > :03:11.they're in clothing that I would say is pretty wind-resistant, that would
:03:12. > :03:17.create - well, slow you down. Why aren't they in tight gear?
:03:18. > :03:23.Well, for the most part the moguls are where they're generating speed.
:03:24. > :03:27.It's not plus 50mph where lycra will make a huge difference in terms of
:03:28. > :03:32.resistance and you have that freestyle element on those two
:03:33. > :03:37.jumps. While lycra is stretchy, you don't want to be too constrained, so
:03:38. > :03:41.baggier clothes are better. Thank you for the explanation. We
:03:42. > :03:46.know the final six in the line-up. We have two of the Canadian sisters
:03:47. > :03:49.in there and the defending champion, as well who looks to be improving.
:03:50. > :04:14.Let's see the medals decided. Six of them left. It's now or never.
:04:15. > :04:19.She bids to be the first Olympic medallist in moguls for Japan. She's
:04:20. > :04:33.never been a medallist. She is having a real crack at this final
:04:34. > :04:38.run, though. A final jump. A big floated back flip. It's fast through
:04:39. > :04:48.the clock. The best we have seen from her tonight. Saving her best
:04:49. > :04:52.until last. Setting up for the first kicker
:04:53. > :04:55.here. Leading with the right arm. Rotation around. 360. Used to be
:04:56. > :05:10.known as a helicopter. Now needs to be up in the 21s really
:05:11. > :05:17.to have any sort of chance of a medal. The second jump was again a
:05:18. > :05:21.little scruffy. Halfway between a straight back somersault. At this
:05:22. > :05:26.level with six going for only three medals, little mistakes like that,
:05:27. > :05:35.little details like that can be costly. She will lead the way in
:05:36. > :05:43.gold medal position. It's OK, 20. 66. It's not spectacular. She will
:05:44. > :05:45.need a bit of luck to add that medal to her positions in previous
:05:46. > :05:55.Olympics. Eliza Outtrim now from the USA. A
:05:56. > :06:00.study of concentration at the top. Skied beautifully tonight. Now she
:06:01. > :06:12.goes for the final time in a bid for an Olympic medal. 360. Around it
:06:13. > :06:17.goes. A bit on the top of the bumps. Now she's established a good rhythm.
:06:18. > :06:22.Down the centre of the course. Not as tight and as easy as it was in
:06:23. > :06:27.the previous round. Second kicker could be key.
:06:28. > :06:48.Back-flip. Home in a time of 31. 49. Good stuff
:06:49. > :07:02.from Eliza Outtrim. Still to come, Britteny Cox from Australia. Kearney
:07:03. > :07:05.will be last to go here in Sochi 2014.
:07:06. > :07:11.Her head getting bounced forward there.
:07:12. > :07:15.Normally she's got such control over her upper body, her legs and
:07:16. > :07:19.shoulders, but it wasn't as good as it could have been. I am not sure
:07:20. > :07:31.it's enough to put her in first position. 20. 66 is the score to
:07:32. > :07:34.beat. A nervous wait. Silver medal position for the moment with four to
:07:35. > :07:46.come. You have to think she's not going to walk away with a medal.
:07:47. > :07:55.The Australian, Britteny Cox is ready to go. She will get straight
:07:56. > :08:03.into it. Staring down the hill. She's away. Here we go. Absorbed
:08:04. > :08:11.well. Floats around the 360. Good landing. Right back into the moguls.
:08:12. > :08:14.The Australian flag is on her knees to show the judges exactly what's
:08:15. > :08:22.going on below the waist. Good skiing. Nice, still calm upper body.
:08:23. > :08:26.Nothing wrong with this so far. Skis got parted from the snow. The
:08:27. > :08:35.back-flip, not a perfect landing but the speed is fast. It's pretty good
:08:36. > :08:38.from Cox. One li mis mistake which we might see again in replay.
:08:39. > :08:47.Nervous times for the Australian coaches.
:08:48. > :08:57.Aiko Uemura leads for Japan. Second is the USA. Britteny Cox landing the
:08:58. > :09:01.first kicker. There was one little mistake, two-thirds of the way down
:09:02. > :09:05.the mid-part of the course. It might just have cost her the chance to
:09:06. > :09:11.lead. There it is. Skis got separated. It's a fine line between
:09:12. > :09:16.pushing for a medal and being an also-ran here. That wasn't the best
:09:17. > :09:21.landing of the second kicker. As she floated around the straight
:09:22. > :09:30.back-flip, just got bounced sideways on touch down.
:09:31. > :09:32.20. 66 to beat. She's gone under 20. Silver medal position. Three down
:09:33. > :10:07.and three to go. Justine Dufour-Laponte ready to go.
:10:08. > :10:12.Has to be in control for the first kicker. Floats around the 360. Good
:10:13. > :10:17.landing. Skiing again, absorbing again. The poles are working
:10:18. > :10:27.overtime from left to right. Wonderful timing through these
:10:28. > :10:32.turns. Away she goes. Pushing hard. Middle part of the course dealt
:10:33. > :10:36.with. Final kicker, back-flip. Nice landing. 31. 56. Happy with her
:10:37. > :10:52.performance. Is it good enough to beat that 20. 0.66?
:10:53. > :11:04.Lots to enjoy here. A great landing there. Ready to absorb the next
:11:05. > :11:08.bump. A back-flip off the second one, on the soft snow and let them
:11:09. > :11:14.run for the line. Not in full control as she crossed the line.
:11:15. > :11:19.It's got to be enough. It's got to be enough. The middle part of the
:11:20. > :11:26.course, the turns count for 50%, remember. That's where medals are
:11:27. > :11:29.won and lost. She leads the way! She's guaranteed a medal with just
:11:30. > :11:34.two to come. She's in gold medal position at the moment. The
:11:35. > :11:43.Canadians will have at least one medal from the 2014 Women's Olympic
:11:44. > :11:52.Moguls final tonight. Gold medal position. Now her older sister will
:11:53. > :12:01.ski and then the defending champion Hannah Kearney.
:12:02. > :12:12.The penultimate skier in the final round, Chloe Dufour-Laponte. She's
:12:13. > :12:18.away. Her sister leads the way. Here's Chloe. Good first turn.
:12:19. > :12:23.Floats around the 360. The landing is good. Similar pattern so far to
:12:24. > :12:27.what we just saw from Justine. Really attacking the middle part of
:12:28. > :12:31.the course. Knees and skis locked together. This is beautiful bump
:12:32. > :12:36.skiing. Nothing wrong with this. It might just come down to the finest
:12:37. > :12:41.margin. Maybe the time will separate them. Can she land well enough? A
:12:42. > :12:45.little twitch on landing. That might be the difference between the two
:12:46. > :12:58.sisters. Surely it will be good enough for a medal? Chloe now waits
:12:59. > :13:02.for the judges to deliberate on her performance. There is the first
:13:03. > :13:09.kicker. Good landing. Very similar to what we saw from her sister.
:13:10. > :13:19.Wasn't good so solid off the second kicker.
:13:20. > :13:24.The money turns in the middle part of the course were skied to near
:13:25. > :13:30.perfection. But this landing might just make the difference between
:13:31. > :13:36.first and second. If she goes into second she will be guaranteed a
:13:37. > :13:39.medal. It's as simple as that. The landing wasn't totally stable. That
:13:40. > :14:02.might put her behind her sister. Let's see what the judges make of
:14:03. > :14:06.it. 21. 66. She's second. Whether those three remain on the podium is
:14:07. > :14:13.all now down to the defending champion, Hannah Kearney. Two medals
:14:14. > :14:19.guaranteed for the Canadians. They had gold and silver at the moment.
:14:20. > :14:25.Their fate and the fate of the sisters is in the hands of Hannah
:14:26. > :14:30.Kearney. No skier has ever successfully defended an Olympic
:14:31. > :14:34.moguls Crown. There have been golds and silvers, silvers and golds, but
:14:35. > :14:40.no back-to-back gold. Can it happen tonight? She's away. The champion in
:14:41. > :14:46.2010 in Vancouver, off to a good start in 2014. And then in trouble!
:14:47. > :14:56.Not back in full control. She might have blown it there. It might be
:14:57. > :15:00.gold for Justine. Kearney has lost composure. Twitching from
:15:01. > :15:04.side-to-side. Back in command now. The damage might have been done. The
:15:05. > :15:14.landing and the final kicker is good. She punches the air. But I am
:15:15. > :15:21.not sure that is good enough for back-to-back golds. Will she get a
:15:22. > :15:31.medal. Nervous moments. They can barely look at each other.
:15:32. > :15:37.KearneyBrian Carney made Kearney made a mess of the take-off. She was
:15:38. > :15:42.improvising through the first few turns after she touched down. The
:15:43. > :15:53.flight was good. Beautiful to watch. But this might have just cost her
:15:54. > :15:58.the gold. Second jump was pretty solid. She might just scrape by with
:15:59. > :16:03.a bronze. That would be cruel to Aiko Uemura, who may finish out of
:16:04. > :16:06.the medals again or will Kearney be heavily penalised and pushed out of
:16:07. > :16:12.the medals completely? Who's going to get the gold here tonight? Will
:16:13. > :16:19.it be Justine Dufour-Lapointe or Kearney? It's third for Kearney.
:16:20. > :16:25.Justine Dufour-Lapointe takes gold for Canada, with her sister, Chloe,
:16:26. > :16:29.in second. Hannah Kearney comes through with the bronze medal. The
:16:30. > :16:36.record books remain unchanged, no skier has ever won back-to-back bump
:16:37. > :16:42.titles. Gold to Justine Dufour-Lapointe, silver to Chloe
:16:43. > :16:46.Dufour-Lapointe, two of the three sisters on the podium, a remarkable
:16:47. > :16:51.story for the family from Montreal with the champion of four years ago
:16:52. > :16:59.relegated to bronze medal and spare a thought for Aiko Uemura, of Japan.
:17:00. > :17:05.She's missed it again. Seventh, six, fifth, fourth and fourth again
:17:06. > :17:10.tonight. The celebrations can start for Dufour-Lapointe sisters. In a
:17:11. > :17:15.way you feel sorry for Maxim, who's there, the oldest sister, no medal
:17:16. > :17:19.for her tonight. Tears of joy as she celebrates with her younger sisters.
:17:20. > :17:27.Justine is the Olympic moguls champion for 2014. Chloe takes the
:17:28. > :17:32.Sirte. -- silver. Fabulous competition. The Canadians have
:17:33. > :17:36.their first couple of medals in the skiing programme at the Olympic
:17:37. > :18:04.winter Games. Well, wonderful scenes there and a
:18:05. > :18:07.fantastic story as well for Canada and for the Dufour-Lapointe sisters.
:18:08. > :18:11.Let's get the reaction, as we see the winning run. Let's get the
:18:12. > :18:17.reaction from Ed and from Graham. What did you make of it as a
:18:18. > :18:21.competition? A fantastic competition. The difference
:18:22. > :18:26.separating the two sisters was just down to speed on the last run.
:18:27. > :18:30.Justine was about two tenths of a second quicker than Chloe. That was
:18:31. > :18:34.what made the difference between those two. Hannah Kearney really
:18:35. > :18:38.lost it after the first kicker. Landing and didn't get the pole
:18:39. > :18:42.plant. That's so important in moguls, because it stabilises your
:18:43. > :18:49.upper body and controls the speed. If you lose the rhythm, you won't
:18:50. > :18:53.make the good turns. She never quite looked comfortable
:18:54. > :18:57.in any of her runs. We see again the family celebrating and Canada
:18:58. > :19:06.overjoyed at that, a gold and silver. Ed, is their family one with
:19:07. > :19:11.a strong Olympic sporting tradition? Well, there is another family in the
:19:12. > :19:16.free skiing fold, alongside the moguls, there is free skiing slope
:19:17. > :19:20.style and half pipe, which debut at these Games. There are three
:19:21. > :19:26.brothers from New Zealand, the Wells brothers. They have a younger
:19:27. > :19:31.brother who is also a really good skier. They will all compete in the
:19:32. > :19:35.ski half pipe. I'm sure they will chat to the Dufour-Lapointe sisters
:19:36. > :19:40.after these medals to get the tips in the Athletes' Athletes' Village.
:19:41. > :19:42.To both Ed and Graham and to Matt who gave us commentary there,
:19:43. > :19:47.congratulations again to Canada. We have moved position. I hope you like
:19:48. > :19:53.it, with the palm trees and boll soy in the background -- Bolshei in the
:19:54. > :20:05.background. This is what is still to come tonight:
:20:06. > :20:15.We'll be seeing how Britain's pair of Billy Morgan and Jamie Nicholls
:20:16. > :20:23.got on in the first ever slope style snowboard final. We'll also find out
:20:24. > :20:27.how history was made in the biathlon.
:20:28. > :20:43.We report on an Iron Lady, aiming for her fourth winter gold. You've
:20:44. > :20:46.just seen the extreme park under the flood lights and at night, but this
:20:47. > :20:52.morning it was bathed in sunshine for a debut event. It was men's
:20:53. > :20:55.slope style snowboard, we had two British competitors, Billy Morgan
:20:56. > :21:00.and Jamie Nicholls. I was very, very excited to get the chance to go up
:21:01. > :21:03.there and see what it was all about. There is definitely an air of love
:21:04. > :21:09.and friendship here at the extreme park, where competitors from the
:21:10. > :21:14.USA, Canada, from Norway, Finland and from Great Britain are into the
:21:15. > :21:17.final of the men's slope style in snowboarding. For them, it's a
:21:18. > :21:22.first-time experience. For everyone here, this is a debut event.
:21:23. > :21:26.Excitement is building. This is the BBC commentary box. Ed Lee in here
:21:27. > :21:33.doing his prep for the final. Hey there. I sense a real anticipation
:21:34. > :21:38.here, something big is going to happen. This is the single most
:21:39. > :21:42.exciting period of snowboarding I've ever witnessed. I've watched Jamie
:21:43. > :21:47.and Billy grow up. There's a tiny part of me that's really worried I
:21:48. > :21:50.might cry, if they medal. Jamie Nicholls went straight through to
:21:51. > :21:53.the final from qualification. Billy Morgan had to go into the semifinals
:21:54. > :21:57.this morning. Were you impressed with what he came up with? Yeah, he
:21:58. > :22:01.came out and laid down his stock run, but he laid it down perfectly.
:22:02. > :22:05.Good luck to them and to you as well. Don't cry. I won't, I promise
:22:06. > :22:10.I won't cry. You go out there and enjoy this. I promise it will be one
:22:11. > :22:14.of the spectacles of the Games. We have two runs, it will be the best
:22:15. > :22:18.score from those two runs that counts. Sage Kotsenburg, one of the
:22:19. > :22:24.most creative, stylish riders out there. Snowboarding can be accused
:22:25. > :22:29.as being a bit sterile and similar with some of the jumps, but this is
:22:30. > :22:33.the snowboarder's snowboarder. Oh, he's stepped this one up for the
:22:34. > :22:39.finals. He has indeed. He's left some in the tank here. Lay back,
:22:40. > :22:43.hand drag up the connone rail. Coming in switch here now. What did
:22:44. > :22:47.I tell you, the speed, he's going so deep. There must be speed from
:22:48. > :22:51.somewhere now. All the riders are going bigger. There's the double
:22:52. > :22:56.tail grab. He seems to have so much time. Into the third and final jump.
:22:57. > :23:03.Backside double 14, oh, 1260. A great run from Sage Kotsenburg,
:23:04. > :23:12.very, very strong. Look at this grab here! Look at that! I think they're
:23:13. > :23:17.calling that the Holy Grail. That's the highest score we've seen so far.
:23:18. > :23:21.Massive score there for Sage Kotsenburg of the USA. He tries to
:23:22. > :23:25.give America what would be their first Olympic Gold Medal on Russian
:23:26. > :23:30.soil. But next up, at the top of that run, is Billy Morgan.
:23:31. > :23:33.COMMENTATOR: We have Billy Morgan and Jamie Nicholls stood together.
:23:34. > :23:36.They're going back-to-back. These boys are so calm and mature about
:23:37. > :23:43.their performances. Billy Morgan proffered that today. The boy from
:23:44. > :23:49.Southampton dropped in. 270 on, 270 off. Into the up rail. A nice board
:23:50. > :23:54.slide. Look how composed he looks. Came off a bitterliy there. Into the
:23:55. > :24:02.cannon rail. Backside rodeo off. Oh, no! No. He can't believe it. I think
:24:03. > :24:07.the snow is a little bit soft here. I'm looking for excuses. A bit
:24:08. > :24:10.slushy. The good news is Billy Morgan has another run to try to
:24:11. > :24:15.make up the marks. Now on course, Jamie Nicholls.
:24:16. > :24:20.COMMENTATOR: Jamie and a fantastic rail rider, outside 270, 270 off.
:24:21. > :24:25.450 out there. No-one else doing that one. Little hand down, but
:24:26. > :24:28.still he's far more technical than anyone else in that part of the
:24:29. > :24:33.rail. He's one of the best on the rails. He's no slouch on the jump.
:24:34. > :24:40.Are we going to see the cab 14? There's one, two, three, four, yes!
:24:41. > :24:46.Into this second jump, switch back side, he wanted the 1260. Yes, he's
:24:47. > :24:57.got it! Going for nine. Now the triple. Yes! Oh, Jamie puts it down!
:24:58. > :25:02.I held my breath there. Oh, Jamie Nicholls for Great Britain! He puts
:25:03. > :25:05.down an absolutely stonking run. Beautiful, very technical rails.
:25:06. > :25:09.There are a couple of small mistakes, we know how fussy the
:25:10. > :25:14.judges have been about execution. Here's the backside triple. He's
:25:15. > :25:18.really corked that on the last hit there. Slightly overrotated. All I'm
:25:19. > :25:25.doing here is picking hairs. Because that's what the judges are doing.
:25:26. > :25:29.Absolutely. Jamie's got a score on the board. Looked so excite whenned
:25:30. > :25:34.he finished his run and then disappointed with the score. Buff
:25:35. > :25:39.he's into second place. -- But he's into second place.
:25:40. > :25:44.COMMENTATOR: This is one of the most elegant boarders. He has a beautiful
:25:45. > :25:49.style. Lovely 450. This is glorious. Riding backwards here. He's going
:25:50. > :25:53.for the triple. Oh, no. Get ready, ladies and gentleman, for a master
:25:54. > :26:01.class in liquid snowboarding. You have to say he's the form man coming
:26:02. > :26:04.into this event. This should be the back triple. That leaves the
:26:05. > :26:11.competition in a really interesting place. Jamie Nicholls has landed a
:26:12. > :26:15.good, safe run. He's in the silver medal position, but three of the big
:26:16. > :26:18.guns all had falls or mistakes. They have to put everything into their
:26:19. > :26:24.second run. Other-wise they leave here with nothing.
:26:25. > :26:28.COMMENTATOR: Mark McMorris. Talk about pressure, it was his gold to
:26:29. > :26:32.lose. That's what everyone was saying. He's been the poster boy for
:26:33. > :26:40.team Canada coming into the Games. Switch into the first jump. Switch
:26:41. > :26:48.triple. Really deep, really clean. Backside triple. Oh, but he's down.
:26:49. > :26:51.It's good enough for silver. Jamie Nicholls has been knocked into
:26:52. > :26:57.bronze medal position. Members of Team GB are here to support Billy
:26:58. > :27:02.and Jamie. Casy, what do you make TV so far? It's amazing, just to see
:27:03. > :27:07.everyone throw down, especially on a perfect day. Everyone supporting,
:27:08. > :27:29.it's really cool. Now Billy Morgan, second run. It's now now or never.
:27:30. > :27:37.Into the business end of the course. One, two, three... He's put it down
:27:38. > :27:45.very, very cleanly. Is this the front side double, yeah. Oh, no. Oh,
:27:46. > :27:51.no. Well, he had to go for it. He had to. Such a shame because the top
:27:52. > :27:55.half casy looked much smoother. That was the best one I've seen so far
:27:56. > :28:01.until the fall. I'm so gutted for him. It's not over for Great
:28:02. > :28:05.Britain. Jamie Nicholls. Currently in bronze medal position. Can he
:28:06. > :28:12.best that? Oh, he's not going to improve. It all comes down to this.
:28:13. > :28:18.It's a solid take off. Oh, my goodness! Third position, he bumps
:28:19. > :28:26.Jamie Nicholls out of the medals. Staale Sandbech from Norway. He's a
:28:27. > :28:29.goofy rider. Anything riding left-foot forward is backwards or
:28:30. > :28:32.switch. We talk about that and it is the equivalent of trying to write
:28:33. > :28:35.with your left hand. Whilst being attacked by a flock of seagulls.
:28:36. > :28:45.Wearing a chip hat. The entire top section of the
:28:46. > :28:53.course, he's done backwards. With a chip hat on being attacked by
:28:54. > :28:59.seagulls. Yeah. That 1260 into frontside 14, oh, my goodness,
:29:00. > :29:05.frontside 1440, this has got to be backside 1440. Backside triple. The
:29:06. > :29:14.top section was so technical. Beautiful. The rails were
:29:15. > :29:19.phenomenal. Second place! Sage Kotsenburg, the Gold Medal. Staale
:29:20. > :29:22.Sandbech from Norway will take silver. Canadian, Mark McMorris,
:29:23. > :29:28.riding with a broken rib, takes bronze.
:29:29. > :29:34.Jamie Nicholls, from Great Britain, in sixth. So that was America's
:29:35. > :29:37.first Olympic Gold Medal on Russian soil. The first time they've
:29:38. > :29:42.competed in an Olympics here. Here are Jamie and Billy now. What has
:29:43. > :29:46.the reaction been like since you competed in that final? It's been
:29:47. > :29:51.crazy, like, I just can't believe I was part of it, you know, such a
:29:52. > :29:57.crazy final. Just today was kind of a life changer really. You know,
:29:58. > :30:01.unbelievable just to be at the Olympics and compete in the finals
:30:02. > :30:05.and both getening to the finals is just -- getting to the finals is
:30:06. > :30:09.amazing for British snowboarding. I'm just happy. It struck me being
:30:10. > :30:13.there, it's a sport where everybody is happy for each other, to see each
:30:14. > :30:17.other do well and land big tricks? Yeah, absolutely. Kind of going
:30:18. > :30:20.around the circuit all the time and seeing the tricks that have been
:30:21. > :30:24.done before, come into the Olympics and everybody is putting it down on
:30:25. > :30:28.the big stage has been amazing. I've never seen all the big tricks I've
:30:29. > :30:32.ever seen go down in the same context and in the same runs. It was
:30:33. > :30:37.unbelievable. I'm massively proud to be part of it. Did you feel that you
:30:38. > :30:41.really had to go for it? Yeah, absolutely. I think fourth or 12th,
:30:42. > :30:46.it doesn't matter. I thought I'd just go all out and I just wanted to
:30:47. > :30:51.put a really good run down. And to go as big as possible. I went a
:30:52. > :30:56.little bit too big. I didn't manage to land it.
:30:57. > :30:59.I put all eggs in one basket, which my mum wouldn't have told me to do.
:31:00. > :31:05.I went for it. Jamie, you had an hour in a medal position. Yeah. I
:31:06. > :31:10.was actually in second for a while, then I was bumped to third then I
:31:11. > :31:14.was just standing there. I kind of knew, the last three guys, they were
:31:15. > :31:18.all potential winners. I knew I would probably get bumped out. I'm
:31:19. > :31:21.just happy to go there and put the run down I wanted to do today.
:31:22. > :31:26.Obviously I tried to step it up second run and kind of messed up the
:31:27. > :31:31.first rail. To be honest, what I did today I've never done in my entire
:31:32. > :31:41.life of snowboarding, I'm super happy to have done that run. The big
:31:42. > :31:46.moment Yeah, a switch 14. Then I did a switchback nine. Then I got my
:31:47. > :31:53.backside triple 14 in the same run, pretty happy. Terms of a winner, how
:31:54. > :31:57.good an example of your sport is Sage Kotsenburg? He's amazing. Like,
:31:58. > :32:01.I've been watching that guy for so many years now. He's a good friend
:32:02. > :32:07.of mine too. He's just, he brings creativity to snowboarding. The
:32:08. > :32:11.grabs he does, the tricks he does is insane. Today is showed that
:32:12. > :32:14.creativity won it. Fair play to him. It also shows, from your points of
:32:15. > :32:18.view, that you can get to an Olympic final from a dry ski slope in
:32:19. > :32:21.Halifax or dry slope in Southampton, how much do you hope that the kids
:32:22. > :32:32.that were watching this morning will think - that's a sport I can do? I
:32:33. > :32:36.needed something else to do and it filled everything. I had so much fun
:32:37. > :32:41.when I was younger snowboarding with my friends at the dry slopes I went
:32:42. > :32:44.to and going to snow Domes and small competitions and that and without
:32:45. > :32:48.that in my childhood when I was younger my life wouldn't be the same
:32:49. > :32:52.today. I hope kids can go out and get inspired and have fun and enjoy
:32:53. > :32:57.the life that I have. Well, let's get a feel from Olly Williams of how
:32:58. > :33:01.people were reacting on social media and the kind of language they were
:33:02. > :33:05.using. Today was a day that everybody fell in love with
:33:06. > :33:09.slopestyle. Thousands of people watching, thousands tweeting, not
:33:10. > :33:15.least a Wimbledon champion in Andy Murray watching, getting as carried
:33:16. > :33:20.away as the rest of us, tweeting, saying, hang on maybe we can have
:33:21. > :33:25.two medallists. You get back to your phone and there was a tweet from
:33:26. > :33:30.Andy Murray. I couldn't believe it, he tweeted both of us and said we
:33:31. > :33:36.rode well and maybe we could get two medals. You know, we didn't, but we
:33:37. > :33:42.tried our best. I think also you got a proposal of marriage, didn't you?
:33:43. > :33:47.Yeah, there is a few of those messages! I think Billy's fan club
:33:48. > :33:53.has grown, as well. Did you see your numbers rocket up? I think it
:33:54. > :33:58.tripled today, my followers, got lots of new fans. Got to keep them
:33:59. > :34:02.happy. It's not the end of slopestyle either, the women
:34:03. > :34:07.tomorrow and James Wood later in the week. Of course you guys will be
:34:08. > :34:12.looking forward to seeing how he tackles pretty much the same thing
:34:13. > :34:16.you do? He has been working hard on tricks recently. I think he took a
:34:17. > :34:21.hit to his hip. I am sure he has more to offer. The rest of the
:34:22. > :34:25.freestyle team are going to go back in strong, they've good things to
:34:26. > :34:32.show. Much more from these guys and everyone else at BBC Sport on
:34:33. > :34:36.Twitter and Facebook. Thank you so much, thank you to Billy and Jamie.
:34:37. > :34:41.Let's head back out to the mountains to Ed and Graham. You heard Ed and
:34:42. > :34:45.how excited he was. Guys, what's your reaction to what Jamie and
:34:46. > :34:50.Billy have done today and what the sport has done in terms of putting
:34:51. > :34:54.down a marker? Well, it was a phenomenal day. It
:34:55. > :34:58.was shown in its best light. There are a couple of falls in the final
:34:59. > :35:03.but the drama added to it. The fact that both the lads had the maturity,
:35:04. > :35:07.I am so proud of them both, I want to say that now. They had brilliant
:35:08. > :35:12.performances. I think as they said, they've inspired a lot of people
:35:13. > :35:17.today. We had a combined snowboarder and ski programme, we need to get
:35:18. > :35:22.that programme properly funded by UK Sport so we can work on a four-year
:35:23. > :35:26.cycle towards the next Olympics and really start to treat it like we
:35:27. > :35:30.treat skeleton and short track speed skating.
:35:31. > :35:34.That's a good point to put to both of you. Do you feel that having
:35:35. > :35:37.performed as you have done and both making the final, that you deserve
:35:38. > :35:40.more funding, that the sport deserves to be taken more seriously
:35:41. > :35:45.maybe at home? Yeah, I mean, it would be great, you know. Obviously,
:35:46. > :35:50.to get more facilities in the UK too, and maybe even have like a
:35:51. > :35:57.place like they have in the US, a place where people and kids can
:35:58. > :36:03.actually learn new tricks in a safe environment. It will be awesome.
:36:04. > :36:10.Yeah, I think having facilities like that in the States to use, it
:36:11. > :36:16.reduced risk, environments as we call them, foam pits, trampolines
:36:17. > :36:19.and progression for all sports really, centres would help progress
:36:20. > :36:22.sports in general in the UK. Congratulations for what you have
:36:23. > :36:26.achieved at this Olympics and thank you for coming down here. It's late
:36:27. > :36:30.at night, it's nearly midnight and they've had a busy day. Thank you so
:36:31. > :36:34.much. Really appreciate it. Let's look now at who's been making
:36:35. > :36:44.headlines on the first day of real competition here at the Winter
:36:45. > :36:48.Olympics. Sven Kramer took gold in a new
:36:49. > :36:51.record. He led the way for a Netherlands clean sweep of the
:36:52. > :37:09.medals. In the men's luge at the halfway
:37:10. > :37:15.mark Felix Loch leads the way, Russia's figure skaters will sleep
:37:16. > :37:20.sound soundly tonight victory in the pairs routine has put them in the
:37:21. > :37:28.box seat for gold in this inaugural Olympic team event.
:37:29. > :37:41.It's time now to head out to the cross-country ski centre. We are
:37:42. > :37:49.particularly going to focus on Marret Bjorkan.
:37:50. > :37:53.Day one of the winter Olympics and we have come to the cross-country
:37:54. > :38:02.venue. We are in a hidden valley away from the alpine events. This is
:38:03. > :38:14.the centre and that's absolutely beautiful.
:38:15. > :38:36.Amazing speed. The top seeds are in the front.
:38:37. > :38:46.We have Bjoergen, the defending champion. Two fallers there. They
:38:47. > :38:49.haven't lost too much time there but it will be interesting to see
:38:50. > :38:54.whether they lose a couple of seconds. There were definite
:38:55. > :39:04.stumbles there. So, halfway through the event. Skiing changed from
:39:05. > :39:11.classic into skating. Bjoergen first in, first out - just.
:39:12. > :39:17.You can see the leading five have got away from seven seconds. It may
:39:18. > :39:25.not have grown more than half a second.
:39:26. > :39:31.Kalla is stuck in third place the whole way around. If she wants the
:39:32. > :39:35.gold she's got to be biding her time. I suspect they'll make the
:39:36. > :39:38.break when they come around the back of the stadium and that's where
:39:39. > :39:45.they'll get the opportunity to overtake.
:39:46. > :39:54.Look at Kalla coming through on the inside, the Swedish athlete. This is
:39:55. > :40:01.a concerted bid to break up the Norwegian dominance. Again it could
:40:02. > :40:05.be too early for Charlotte Kalla. It's a bold move. With a
:40:06. > :40:09.minute-and-a-half still on the clock to race the climbing now starts.
:40:10. > :40:13.That little burst from Kalla could be expensive. But look at the gap
:40:14. > :40:17.that's opening between second and third.
:40:18. > :40:30.The first gold medal of the cross-country programme is about to
:40:31. > :40:36.be won. Charlotte Kalla of Sweden but Marit Bjoergen has come through
:40:37. > :40:40.on the inside. Brilliant tactically. Can she defend this title? She's the
:40:41. > :40:48.World Champion. She's the woman in form. She knows Kalla is still
:40:49. > :40:55.there. She's closing in on another superb piece of Winter Olympic
:40:56. > :41:01.history. It could be a truly golden fortnight for Bjoergen. Kalla is
:41:02. > :41:12.surely going to have to settle for second place now. Kalla is still
:41:13. > :41:20.driving for the line but Bjoergen has started here, it's gold again.
:41:21. > :41:32.Kalla has to settle for silver. It's a brilliant bronze for Heidi Weng.
:41:33. > :41:41.Bjoergen was too strong. It's a Norway one and three. You have to
:41:42. > :41:54.feel a bit for Johaug. How much more can we expect during Sochi? I have
:41:55. > :41:57.it now, now I can relax and the rest of it. Six races so everything is
:41:58. > :42:02.possible. We will see. Good luck. Thank you.
:42:03. > :42:06.A fantastic gold medal for her and Norway was very hopeful that total
:42:07. > :42:10.could be added to. They look to a man upon whom they've relied so
:42:11. > :42:15.often and more often than not he has come up trumps. Let's rejoin Rob
:42:16. > :42:19.Walker to tell us the full story of one of the greatest athletes in
:42:20. > :42:27.Winter Olympic history. This is the stunning
:42:28. > :42:41.state-of-the-art cross-country and biathlon centre.
:42:42. > :42:56.Already a legend in this sport. Is this the day he goes one better?
:42:57. > :43:07.Landertinger could definitely feature. What drama lies in store
:43:08. > :43:12.here? This is crucial for Bjoerndalen. His shooting has let
:43:13. > :43:17.him down at times. Yes, that's clear. Massive moments at the range
:43:18. > :43:22.now. There is the miss! The action keeps on coming here. The whole of
:43:23. > :43:27.Norway will be holding their breath. He has missed with the first shot!
:43:28. > :43:35.He is a great skier. He is going to have to be. His dreams of a 12th
:43:36. > :43:49.medal just took a step backwards. Landertinger. Grinding across the
:43:50. > :43:53.line. He leads by 13 seconds. Bjoerndalen has only missed one. He
:43:54. > :44:00.has been around for so long, he has won it twice. Keeps on ticking. The
:44:01. > :44:17.margin he has to close keeps on growing. Here's Bjoerndalen across
:44:18. > :44:21.the line. What about Soukup? Could he break Norwegian hearts here?
:44:22. > :44:30.Under the floodlights creates the most amazing atmosphere. Soukup
:44:31. > :44:40.could well take the lead here. He was on course to beat him. Fourcade
:44:41. > :44:44.gone. It's going to be a 7th gold for Bjoerndalen. A hat trick in this
:44:45. > :45:02.event alone. He on this moment and on this day joins his compatriot.
:45:03. > :45:05.12 medals in total then for Ole Einar. He is an extraordinary
:45:06. > :45:08.athlete and becomes the oldest to win an individual gold medal at the
:45:09. > :45:13.age of 40. We are going to shift our attention to tomorrow's blue ribbon
:45:14. > :45:16.event, which is the men's downhill. It's a course that has already
:45:17. > :45:20.thrown up a lot of debate with the veteran and much decorated skier
:45:21. > :45:24.Body Miller saying it's treacherous. That it really is dangerous. Now
:45:25. > :45:27.Graham Bell when he hears about a challenge wants to take it on. I
:45:28. > :45:30.still think this is one of the most impressive things in British
:45:31. > :45:35.television, what he does with a camera on his helmet. Let's see
:45:36. > :45:42.Graham's run down the downhill course in Sochi. Just looking out at
:45:43. > :45:46.the start gates is intimidating. Let's have a look at it.
:45:47. > :45:56.Pushing out hard, it's already quite rough and bumpy. You're onto the
:45:57. > :46:00.first tight turn. This is the toboggan. You come out high in this
:46:01. > :46:09.turn because we're setting up for the steepest, fastest part of the
:46:10. > :46:19.course. We're going down the valley now. Good speed down here. 46%, just
:46:20. > :46:27.ran a little bit wide, coming out into this turn. Wow. That is an
:46:28. > :46:33.insane start to the men's downhill. Now you have the toughest part of
:46:34. > :46:40.the course coming up. Over the Russian trampoline, massive flight
:46:41. > :46:51.and onto this really icy, bumpy part of the track. High on the ski here.
:46:52. > :47:00.Onto this section called big pan, eight sweeping turns with lots of
:47:01. > :47:15.rollers. They use water injection to make it really rough and bumpy. My
:47:16. > :47:21.legs are burning up. Still the two biggest jumps on the course to come.
:47:22. > :47:28.The first of these is the lake jump, good flight over there. See how
:47:29. > :47:36.rough and bumpy the snow is here. It doesn't give you a chance to relax.
:47:37. > :47:42.Even out on the flat section. In sight of the finish, as we go over
:47:43. > :47:52.this jump. Smoother down here, tuck in towards the line. Wow, wow, that
:47:53. > :47:59.is one of the most testing Olympic downhill courses I have ever skied.
:48:00. > :48:04.I raced five and skied four with a camera, that's tough.
:48:05. > :48:07.You could hear the effort, but also I don't think Graham, I've ever
:48:08. > :48:11.heard you say that strongly this course is really difficult. What is
:48:12. > :48:19.going to happen, do you think in tomorrow's downhill? I think it will
:48:20. > :48:22.be a great race. The fact that Bode Miller says it's treacherous, he
:48:23. > :48:28.actually likes it that way. He's one of those racers that likes it tough,
:48:29. > :48:31.likes it dangerous, I think it puts him as one of the favourites to win
:48:32. > :48:40.tomorrow. It's like the course has been designed for him. And he's been
:48:41. > :48:45.going very well in training. Could you see Svindal being one to
:48:46. > :48:53.challenge him? I definitely, Svindal has been skiing superbly well in
:48:54. > :48:58.downhill this year. He's podiumed in the big races. He's leading the
:48:59. > :49:01.World Cup of standings. Miller wants it a little bit more, and he will
:49:02. > :49:06.throw everything at it. He's a bit of a changed character to what he
:49:07. > :49:11.was. His wife's there in the finish area. He's had a lot, his brother
:49:12. > :49:18.died last year. There's a lot going on in his mind. He really, really
:49:19. > :49:21.wants to win this. He's arguably the biggest name in
:49:22. > :49:24.Alpine skiing. A lot of people will be supporting him around the world,
:49:25. > :49:28.as well as team USA. Thanks to Graham. He will be back on course
:49:29. > :49:31.early tomorrow morning and you can join us. Watch the men's downhill
:49:32. > :49:38.from 6am tomorrow morning. All the highlights in the evening at
:49:39. > :49:40.7pm. We will have coverage throughout the day on BBC Two. Let's
:49:41. > :50:16.look at the medals table then: Switzerland at ice hockey, their
:50:17. > :50:24.very own version of take me out. No liky, no lighty. There was extreme
:50:25. > :50:31.knitting at the snowboard slope style. Awesome.
:50:32. > :50:42.And further proof, if required, that women's ice hockey is a cut-throat
:50:43. > :50:46.business. There are ways of tackling the moguls. And ways of tackling the
:50:47. > :51:05.moguls. It's been a day of ups and downs, of
:51:06. > :51:08.bumps and jumps at the Winter Olympics. I hope you've enjoyed the
:51:09. > :51:12.full flavour of it and please be with us again from very first thing
:51:13. > :51:16.tomorrow morning. We will see you then. My new word in Russian is
:51:17. > :51:22.paka, bye-bye.
