:00:14. > :01:08.speed skating. Join us in a moment. The Winter Olympics: Day 14.

:01:09. > :02:15.CLARE BADLING: Hello and welcome. I hope you took your broom to work

:02:16. > :02:20.with you today and you rocked the house. The good news is that it is a

:02:21. > :02:24.transferable skill so it will last children a lifetime with the

:02:25. > :02:30.courses, dogs, cats and the other people with brooms, I'm not so sure.

:02:31. > :02:33.Today was going to to be good for Great Britain because the male

:02:34. > :02:37.curlers were in a gold medal match against Canada. We have got that

:02:38. > :02:40.coming up shortly as well as everything that happened in the

:02:41. > :02:45.short track speed skating wet Elise Christie went in Britain -- where

:02:46. > :02:48.Elise Christie. We have got a lot but we stuck with the action in the

:02:49. > :02:55.Ice Cube and Matthew Pinsent got the call-up. There is a perception about

:02:56. > :02:59.curling that it is a gentle, genteel sport but somehow it stand out from

:03:00. > :03:03.the rest of the other big events but make no mistake, on the ice, this is

:03:04. > :03:19.going to be a battle. In David Murdoch, we have a leader

:03:20. > :03:22.who has been defeated before, both in Turin and Vancouver ending badly.

:03:23. > :03:28.But he believes that this is his time. He also knows that these

:03:29. > :03:31.chances do not come along very often. To finally be here after

:03:32. > :03:36.putting in so much work with these guys, it is the ultimate dream come

:03:37. > :03:41.true. We will do everything we can, fight to the absolute last and I

:03:42. > :03:44.will play that shots to win. Do you go through the same torture that

:03:45. > :03:49.everybody else does watching this board? The macro I have been

:03:50. > :03:55.watching this for 20 years with the family and I tend to be the quieter

:03:56. > :04:01.one. Maybe get anxious towards the end. He is an amazing skip and

:04:02. > :04:06.leader. Yes, he leads the others on and drives them to play the shots

:04:07. > :04:11.that they do. But ultimately, that is curling, it comes down to him.

:04:12. > :04:20.Yes, that's right. That is when I get a flatter! The first end was

:04:21. > :04:24.dramatic, Murdoch needed to limit the damage in the fourth.

:04:25. > :04:31.COMMENTATOR: This needs to ball right for him, he need some luck.

:04:32. > :04:48.The sweepers are just watching it and they will guide it in. A nice

:04:49. > :04:56.draw from the Canadian skip. They have the early lead. At the end of

:04:57. > :05:03.the macro one, they are two behind and then Murdoch went straight into

:05:04. > :05:10.the Hubble -- at the end of end one. Britain got one back in the second.

:05:11. > :05:17.It will be close, it is one but not the two that he wanted. The mistakes

:05:18. > :05:26.were creeping in. Got to catch the guard... Oh, dear. They need to work

:05:27. > :05:31.that hard to get past the stone. We have been hanging on and asking

:05:32. > :05:34.David Murdoch to make the big shots and he said he couldn't keep doing

:05:35. > :05:41.that and even up to three ends, he has been trying to rescue his team.

:05:42. > :05:47.They could not be getting any worse. This has got to be right. He

:05:48. > :05:54.has got to get the two here. He is just looking to get an edge on this.

:05:55. > :06:02.It needs to move... Has got anything now it is starting to turn?

:06:03. > :06:16.Has he even got one? Move your head, we can't see!

:06:17. > :06:27.That was close but yet another little notch ratcheted up. Canada's

:06:28. > :06:31.grip on this match. With one end to go before the break, getting back on

:06:32. > :06:34.the board was crucial. They have done well and this should

:06:35. > :06:41.be good enough for one, I hope and I think it is. Pretty close to a

:06:42. > :06:47.terrible start? It is not the start we wanted against a team of this

:06:48. > :06:55.calibre. We wanted to keep the score close. Is it all over? , no, not

:06:56. > :06:59.until it is over, not until the final stone. If we can get the two

:07:00. > :07:03.back and then put the pressure on to get the scoreline tighter and put

:07:04. > :07:08.pressure on Canada, we need to step up a gear and play some more shots.

:07:09. > :07:11.Great Britain were really up against it.

:07:12. > :07:26.A big gap now. This is a huge mountain to climb. Not a lot of

:07:27. > :07:31.chance if anything. Eight - two after six ends. Murdoch's men needed

:07:32. > :07:38.the hammer and needed to score two to get any chance of getting into

:07:39. > :07:46.the game -- the men have got the hammer. , no. That is sad. It has

:07:47. > :07:53.been the story of this Olympic final.

:07:54. > :08:00.So eight - three down and Murdoch had very few options. It has been a

:08:01. > :08:05.great campaign during these Olympic Games and while they have fought

:08:06. > :08:11.hard in this final two resurrect something to get something going, it

:08:12. > :08:14.has been an uphill struggle. So Brad Jacobs sending down what could be

:08:15. > :08:20.the last stone here. Interesting to see what David Murdoch does if this

:08:21. > :08:28.happens. He just needs to sit here and he does. Canada lead 9-3 and

:08:29. > :08:35.there is a discussion going on with the British team. And that his aid.

:08:36. > :08:43.This is a game over. Enough is enough, Brad Jacobs and his team are

:08:44. > :08:45.the gold medallists with Dave Murdoch and his team, they will

:08:46. > :08:48.reflect surely in the coming hours on a silver medal which was

:08:49. > :08:57.thoroughly deserved. CLARE BADLING: Some, concession in

:08:58. > :09:00.the end, it was too much, the Canadians to strong but please

:09:01. > :09:06.welcome our silver medal winning meant's curling team!

:09:07. > :09:12.We have the skip, David Murdoch, Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews,

:09:13. > :09:15.Michael Goodfellow and the alternate Tom Brewster. Many congratulations

:09:16. > :09:21.and David, I said to you did you want to listen to that and you said

:09:22. > :09:26."no, not really!". Not in any stage did it look like it would fall right

:09:27. > :09:35.for you. No, we wanted to get to a good start and we did not get the

:09:36. > :09:39.confidence. How proud are you the youngster sitting alongside you?

:09:40. > :09:43.Real proud. It has been an incredible few years with the team.

:09:44. > :09:49.Really proud the effort. There has been... They have been great days,

:09:50. > :09:51.tough days and today was one of the slightly tougher days and yesterday

:09:52. > :09:56.and the day before was one of the good days and that is curling, it is

:09:57. > :10:00.a roller-coaster. I am really proud of every one of the guys. It has

:10:01. > :10:05.been an incredible achievement and an incredible fortnight. Greg, for

:10:06. > :10:08.you, the first Olympics for the three of you. David has been around

:10:09. > :10:16.a while, how much did you want to try to win a medal not just for

:10:17. > :10:20.yourself but for him as well? We came in believing we could win a

:10:21. > :10:23.medal and David having been at a few Olympics, we try to take as much

:10:24. > :10:27.experience from him as we could in order to help us achieve that dream

:10:28. > :10:33.of winning an Olympic medal. When we won the semifinal, the aftermath was

:10:34. > :10:37.phenomenal. Today was an opportunity of a lifetime to win a gold medal

:10:38. > :10:42.and unfortunately it did not quite happen but we are still proud of our

:10:43. > :10:46.efforts. Scott, maybe that is the effort to concentrate on, the wins

:10:47. > :10:51.against Sweden and Norway, they were massive. On Friday, we were 5-1

:10:52. > :10:55.against Denmark and we fought back and got the victory. Unfortunately

:10:56. > :11:01.we knew against Norway if we won, it was then us through and that did not

:11:02. > :11:04.quite go to plan and then the Canada game did not go to plan, neither did

:11:05. > :11:09.the China game but we've got to a tie-break in that and we came

:11:10. > :11:13.through that and got to the semifinal and got to the final today

:11:14. > :11:17.and that was unbelievable. Michael, can I ask you a question about how

:11:18. > :11:24.tough the Canadians are? They are confident to eight degree -- to a

:11:25. > :11:28.degree. They are known for getting themselves pumped up. That is the

:11:29. > :11:35.way they are and we tried not to get distracted by that. It works for

:11:36. > :11:40.them and nothing wrong with it. Tom, for you, watching from a unique

:11:41. > :11:47.perspective, what have you learned from this Olympic experience? It is

:11:48. > :11:54.much easier being on the eyes than it is being of it, -- being off it.

:11:55. > :11:59.A fantastic experience though and I will take a lot, the Games and

:12:00. > :12:04.hopefully for me, though the drive on and try to get to the next Games

:12:05. > :12:10.and we are really proud of the guys, they have played great. I do not

:12:11. > :12:14.want to linger on what went wrong in the final but it happened and I will

:12:15. > :12:19.only show you one piece to comment on, David. It happened early on and

:12:20. > :12:27.the writing was on the wall from end three. Do could go to the start of

:12:28. > :12:33.the first end, and we were not quite clinical enough. They forced a lot

:12:34. > :12:36.of pressure on us and we did not respond and we were not quite

:12:37. > :12:41.clinical enough. Unfortunately not our best game, not the best game we

:12:42. > :12:44.were capable of and that is what is hard to take just now, that we did

:12:45. > :12:50.not play as well as we could have. In some of the shots you see, it is

:12:51. > :12:55.quite heartbreaking at times, just throwing them well but not getting

:12:56. > :12:58.the shots. And at times, you have to take that. And so hard when you are

:12:59. > :13:04.then trailing by a long way as you were at the end of end four. Your

:13:05. > :13:11.expression was, "what will I do here? " The decision to concede when

:13:12. > :13:18.you did, that seems to be a group decision. Yes, you have to face

:13:19. > :13:22.reality of the scoreline. You will not get back in the game no matter

:13:23. > :13:28.how much you think you might. The game has gone and you are too far

:13:29. > :13:31.behind and these Games will not miss anything so in some ways you are

:13:32. > :13:38.making it more painful so it was just a decision, that was it. Our

:13:39. > :13:42.dream was gone. The dream was made because you won a silver medal and

:13:43. > :13:53.let's reflect you and show you best bits at this year's Winter Olympics.

:13:54. > :14:09.COMMENTATOR: The stone is a way, is it right? He has done it! He has

:14:10. > :14:14.done it! The fist bump in the air, a brilliant shot from David Murdoch!

:14:15. > :14:19.Again, with a chance for glory... Dave Murdoch may well have done

:14:20. > :14:22.it... He has, Great Britain are in the Olympic final and the British

:14:23. > :14:28.crowd jumping up and down in the stands!

:14:29. > :14:37.Everybody here laughing as you saw your friends and girlfriends,

:14:38. > :14:43.supporters, parents, everybody up there. Ollie is here, I don't know

:14:44. > :14:49.if you are aware, Jackie Lockhart's idea, a bring your broom to work day

:14:50. > :14:53.in honour of you being in the final. People have been bringing them to

:14:54. > :14:55.work. A wide cross-section of society got involved with this.

:14:56. > :15:03.Let's start with the army. Sweeping their way in front of a

:15:04. > :15:10.tank as their demonstration of curling which is a reasonably

:15:11. > :15:23.difficult thing to steer! That is pretty tricky, I would say! Let's go

:15:24. > :15:32.to the florists. We can now go into the office. So many photographs from

:15:33. > :15:39.offices. We have had hundreds of images from up and down the country.

:15:40. > :15:46.Now we have a car park. You can see these people all have their brooms

:15:47. > :15:56.out. Finally we have the staff of the Duke of York. Maybe? Around the

:15:57. > :15:59.use of paper there to set up their ring but everybody is getting

:16:00. > :16:05.involved up and down the country, you have inspired people to, in

:16:06. > :16:08.their own way, try your sport. So many of them are also saying how

:16:09. > :16:13.proud they are of you all and that is lovely to take away as well. You

:16:14. > :16:17.can see many more of those on our website as well. I have one last

:16:18. > :16:23.question for David. Is this it for you? I am going to have a long, hard

:16:24. > :16:27.thing. It has been great to be part of such a good team and it would be

:16:28. > :16:32.ashamed to split it up and I do not know. I need to have a think and a

:16:33. > :16:40.holiday and I have not my body move. I will be seeing my wife soon.

:16:41. > :16:44.-- I have not had my honeymoon. When did you get married? A couple of

:16:45. > :16:55.years ago. A couple of years and you have not had your honeymoon! Thank

:16:56. > :17:00.you so much. Congratulations again. Later in the programme we will find

:17:01. > :17:51.out if the short track speed skaters could add to the medal haul because

:17:52. > :17:51.Short track speed skating is always the Blade runners were in action.

:17:52. > :17:58.Short track speed skating is always dramatic, do

:17:59. > :18:06.Short track speed skating is always head to the mountains for a

:18:07. > :18:16.Short track speed skating is always turn through the slalom in

:18:17. > :18:27.Short track speed skating is always former Olympic skier, Anna

:18:28. > :18:35.Short track speed skating is always 18-year-old girl bracing in the

:18:36. > :18:57.slalom, Olympic Games. Three years ago when

:18:58. > :19:00.the Moroccan federation called my dad and said they were interested in

:19:01. > :19:05.starting a ski team and there was a possibility I could get the Olympic

:19:06. > :19:11.Games and here I am now. I am here with my coach and my team-mate.

:19:12. > :19:19.Nobody else? No physios or anything? No, just my coach. Does he do

:19:20. > :19:26.everything? Yes,. What does it mean to you to be her? It means a lot. It

:19:27. > :19:31.is a big responsibility to represent Morocco and Africa and I want to

:19:32. > :19:35.represent the important values of hard work and perseverance through

:19:36. > :19:43.my sport and also the Olympic ideals. What was your best event to

:19:44. > :19:49.date? It was a slalom in Austria where I got my best points yet. Have

:19:50. > :19:57.you got a goal for today? Just to ski my best. That is a great goal.

:19:58. > :20:04.Good luck. Into Ramone Maria her fourth Riche

:20:05. > :20:13.was the first to set down a marker. She is a good position to finish our

:20:14. > :20:18.Olympics with another medal. Tina Maze is full of confidence after her

:20:19. > :20:27.two goals. She goes into the second leg with every chance of adding to

:20:28. > :20:30.the tally. Performance of the afternoon was undoubtedly that of

:20:31. > :20:36.Mikaela Shiffrin who showed a lot of skill to finish in front, clearly

:20:37. > :20:43.undaunted by the spotlight. If she wins she will be the youngest

:20:44. > :20:49.Olympic female slalom champion in history. At the other end of the

:20:50. > :20:53.scale the Austrian marry Shields is hoping to become the oldest slalom

:20:54. > :21:09.win in history. She and her sister are standing strong. -- Marlies

:21:10. > :21:15.Schild. The snow was really hard so that was good but I did not ski too

:21:16. > :21:20.well. What were the problems? I was stressed out at the start and I

:21:21. > :21:27.needed to put more energy into it and be more confident. Going into

:21:28. > :21:28.the second run we can see if Michaela Schiffer in can hold her

:21:29. > :21:43.nerve and Skeeter glory. She has an advantage of just 500 of

:21:44. > :21:49.the second. She has high arm carriage and everything is going

:21:50. > :21:57.well so far. It is a better start from this young lady. She made no

:21:58. > :22:00.mistakes at the top. She is a textbook technical slalom skier. She

:22:01. > :22:11.has a calm upper body and her skis are moving quickly underneath her

:22:12. > :22:15.like a pendulum. Bernadette and Marlies Schild are still to come but

:22:16. > :22:21.this is the lead for the Austrians here. It has been a beautiful

:22:22. > :22:27.demonstration of the slalom skiing. She has cruised through this course

:22:28. > :22:37.and she leads by more than half a second. It was brilliant. Next up,

:22:38. > :22:47.Marlies Schild. She is attacking right from the get go. She is on her

:22:48. > :22:52.way. She is probably coming to the end of her career so it would be

:22:53. > :22:56.great to see her on the Pope -- podium. Skiing is not quite flawless

:22:57. > :23:07.but in between the mistakes she lets them run. She was the bronze

:23:08. > :23:13.medallist in 2006 and silver medallist in 2010 and can she

:23:14. > :23:18.finally get a gold in 2014? It is a good ski so far. She likes to build

:23:19. > :23:23.it up and then start to really attack on these final steep turns.

:23:24. > :23:28.Beautiful skiing from Marlies Schild. She is really having a go

:23:29. > :23:38.and letting them run and she's skis into gold for Austria. It is the

:23:39. > :23:43.turn of Tina Maze. She is looking for the double, the technical double

:23:44. > :23:50.to add to her downhill gold. She shared that and she was the outright

:23:51. > :23:56.winner of the giant slalom. She is a little way behind and it has not

:23:57. > :24:04.gone to plan so far. The target is missed. No medals tonight for Tina

:24:05. > :24:25.Maze. Marlies Schild is guaranteed an Olympic medal. Maria Hoefl-Riesch

:24:26. > :24:30.has already claimed the gold in the super combined and the super-G and

:24:31. > :24:38.can she add to her tally tonight? No, it is third. At least a silver

:24:39. > :24:48.for Marlies Schild and with one to come Kathrin Zettel is guaranteed a

:24:49. > :24:54.medal. Mikaela Shiffrin has a huge advantage. It is a solid start but

:24:55. > :25:00.not mistake free. It is pretty solid. Let us see if her nerves can

:25:01. > :25:07.hold out here. Yes, very smooth so far. So relaxed as if she was skiing

:25:08. > :25:14.a normal race. It is sensational skiing, this woman is absolutely on

:25:15. > :25:18.fire. No pressure so far. She is in trouble. What a recovery!

:25:19. > :25:25.Unbelievable reflexes there. But how much damage has done to her time? It

:25:26. > :25:29.is still good. She is in front. Mikaela Shiffrin comes onto the

:25:30. > :25:34.final third of the Olympic slalom course and will she be the youngest

:25:35. > :25:40.ever winner of the Olympic slalom or we'll Marlies Schild be the oldest?

:25:41. > :25:47.It is the youngest! Mikaela Shiffrin wins the title at 18 years old. She

:25:48. > :25:51.is the Olympic slalom champion. She takes the gold medal. Marlies Schild

:25:52. > :25:57.take the silver for the second games in a row and Kathrin Zettel takes

:25:58. > :26:01.the bronze. You are already world champion and now Olympic champion,

:26:02. > :26:05.ie prepared for the adulation you will get that time? To be honest,

:26:06. > :26:10.probably not. I guess now I will go to New York for a day or two and

:26:11. > :26:13.then I have some more races in the World Cup season so hopefully that

:26:14. > :26:29.little break in between actually really going home and it will not be

:26:30. > :26:36.quite so much. Kenza Tazi now. She is born in Boston and she is from

:26:37. > :26:45.Morocco. Two races and one will go back to her normal life and for the

:26:46. > :26:49.other one super stardom beckons. Mikaela Shiffrin makes amends a bit

:26:50. > :26:55.therefore the USA missing Lindsey Vonn. It means that the USA have won

:26:56. > :27:00.their second Alpine Gold and it puts them just bit behind Austria in the

:27:01. > :27:04.Alpine skiing medals. The Austrians have the highest total number of

:27:05. > :27:09.medals, including a bronze and a silver today. The final Alpine medal

:27:10. > :27:15.will be decided tomorrow in the slalom for the men. Tomorrow starts

:27:16. > :27:19.with snowboarding and then the parallel slalom finals. Before then

:27:20. > :27:53.though, tonight we have the joy of the six Nations.

:27:54. > :27:59.Wales against France tonight. Once we finished you can turn over and

:28:00. > :28:05.watch that. Tomorrow it is Italy versus Scotland. We are heading back

:28:06. > :28:09.up the mountain because you may have watched the men's ski cross

:28:10. > :28:15.yesterday because it was extraordinary and it was three

:28:16. > :28:26.places for the French and now it is a chance for the women.

:28:27. > :28:32.At first I was afraid, I was petrified, kept wondering how I

:28:33. > :28:36.could ever live without you by my side. I spent so many nights

:28:37. > :28:44.thinking about how you did me wrong that I got strong and Island how to

:28:45. > :28:49.get along. Great words there from Olivia -- Gloria Gaynor's I Will

:28:50. > :28:54.survive, that is what the women have to do today, they have two survive.

:28:55. > :29:00.It all starts here. 28 ladies each take it in turns to put down their

:29:01. > :29:05.fastest time run. A good charge out of the start. Too

:29:06. > :29:18.low! This is the dignity stripper. Going really nicely. She is down.

:29:19. > :29:24.Oh, no! Despite all the thrills and spills, the entire field or made it

:29:25. > :29:27.through to the finals in one piece. The Australian is under threat from

:29:28. > :29:31.the big German. She has been pushed off the course and she has crashed

:29:32. > :29:38.out. She has made her move into first.

:29:39. > :29:43.Beautiful skiing. They come through! Brilliant racing

:29:44. > :29:46.here. I am having a good time!

:29:47. > :29:57.Masterclass there. That was a big crash. A challenging

:29:58. > :30:03.course in difficult conditions lead to further big crashes and this one

:30:04. > :30:08.resulted in an blue acrylic injury for the German athlete who had to be

:30:09. > :30:16.taken off the course in a stretcher. Oh, no, a massive crush! Dived for

:30:17. > :30:19.the inside and they make a move. Neck and neck. Having led all the

:30:20. > :30:22.way, she goes down on the run into the last jump.

:30:23. > :30:27.Lots of big crashes in the semifinals, and the finals shaping

:30:28. > :30:47.up very nicely. I great stuff from Smith. She is

:30:48. > :30:51.pushing Holmlund across. Smith knows that Holmlund is behind her. Into

:30:52. > :30:58.the technical roller section. Smith has gone. No, she is still in this.

:30:59. > :31:06.They are neck and neck into battle for second as they come down. They

:31:07. > :31:10.are screaming. Sandra has got it. You can hear Smith screaming in

:31:11. > :31:13.frustration. She blew it. Smith blew that race. Look at that, absolutely

:31:14. > :31:27.distraught. A good start from David. Working the

:31:28. > :31:36.first role and she is in the lead. Thompson is right there. Katya Crema

:31:37. > :31:47.is also experienced. The younger ones are at the back. And look at

:31:48. > :31:55.Naslund. She has taken herself out. The 37-year-old Frenchwoman of David

:31:56. > :32:03.showing her experience there. The 17-year-old Swede snapping at their

:32:04. > :32:04.heels into that third berm. A little patch of fog. She stayed on her

:32:05. > :32:20.feet. Two Canadians in the final along

:32:21. > :32:27.with a Swedish and a French woman. All eyes to the final. And now it is

:32:28. > :32:33.time. All of this comes down to one race. If Ophelie David can get away,

:32:34. > :32:39.the Canadians will have to hunt her down. Another good line on the

:32:40. > :32:46.inside lane. Superb over the rollers, David. The two Canadians

:32:47. > :32:53.are looking good and our out in front.

:32:54. > :33:00.At the moment it is Marielle Thompson in the lead. Kelsey Serwa

:33:01. > :33:12.just behind as they tuck in. At the moment, there is not any time...

:33:13. > :33:17.Here comes Serwa. And Ophelie David looking good but she has caught a

:33:18. > :33:20.knuckle which will slow her down. Does not look like she has slowed

:33:21. > :33:24.down much though. David will make a move. You can be sure of that.

:33:25. > :33:28.Ophelie David will not let this final go past and ski down into

:33:29. > :33:35.bronze medal position but she has gone. Ophelie David, the Queen of

:33:36. > :33:40.ski cross is out and now the Canadians have a clear run into the

:33:41. > :33:43.finish. Will they sabotage their own homes by battling for silver and

:33:44. > :33:49.gold? They will, you can guarantee it. The three macro will not let her

:33:50. > :33:53.team mate walk away with a gold medal. -- Serwa will not let her

:33:54. > :34:05.walk away. Silver goes to Serwa and Holmlund of

:34:06. > :34:08.Sweden glides in for the bronze. Not quite the one, two and three for the

:34:09. > :34:13.French team we saw yesterday but one and two, that's not bad.

:34:14. > :34:18.Marielle Thompson might have taken goal here but I will tell you the

:34:19. > :34:21.real winner is here - ski cross. Just amazing.

:34:22. > :34:28.CLARE BADLING: 70 people watching will have been in thrall and also

:34:29. > :34:34.properly wanted to take it up. We are waiting to hear every action

:34:35. > :34:37.from Chemmy Alcott, but let's switch focus to short track speed skating

:34:38. > :34:41.and never in her wildest nightmares would Elise Christie imagine that

:34:42. > :34:45.her micro-games would unfold as it has done. It is on a vacation in the

:34:46. > :34:49.final of the 500 metres denied her a silver medal and then she was given

:34:50. > :34:55.a did not finish when she won her heat of the 1500 metres, both she

:34:56. > :34:58.and Jon Eley were in action today. And they safely made it through to

:34:59. > :35:10.the quarterfinals, safely being the operative word in this sport.

:35:11. > :35:21., De two we are in for a great night of skating in the Iceberg Skating

:35:22. > :35:29.Palace. Jon Eley, the flag bearer for Team GB in the opening ceremony.

:35:30. > :35:42.He holds his own , does Jon Eley, tucked in on the pace of May 15 off.

:35:43. > :35:50.We are into the final lap. Up to the line, oh, yes! Victor An takes it

:35:51. > :35:53.and tremendous skating by Jon Eley, the 29 at skipper of the team seeing

:35:54. > :36:00.him through. That was tremendously impressive. We are now moving to the

:36:01. > :36:05.ladies' semifinals. Christy racing from position number one. And Elise

:36:06. > :36:10.Christie... She nearly got knocked over there, she collided immediately

:36:11. > :36:14.then with the Canadian and I am really pleased that she stayed

:36:15. > :36:18.upright. But that was dangerous and now she is in the fourth position.

:36:19. > :36:23.At the moment, she does not seem to have the acceleration but having

:36:24. > :36:28.said that, with one lap to go, it is tight. She is on the outside and

:36:29. > :36:33.still with a lots of work to do, Elise Christie riding into second

:36:34. > :36:34.place and sweeping into the boards and into the finning straight, Elise

:36:35. > :36:44.Christie takes it for Great Britain. So two from two as they both

:36:45. > :36:48.progressed to the semifinals, could Jon Eley make the medal race?

:36:49. > :36:55.COMMENTATOR: Such an experienced competitor, he is focused. Jon Eley,

:36:56. > :37:01.the oldest man in the competition here. You can see how important it

:37:02. > :37:11.is to get the initial spread out of the way. And Liang Wenhao for China

:37:12. > :37:18.in the lead. Come on, Jon Eley, you need a recipe to get past, but Liang

:37:19. > :37:23.Wenhao still pushing at the front but he goes down the inside, what a

:37:24. > :37:28.skater he is and Jon Eley at the moment is back in fourth spot.

:37:29. > :37:32.Victor An who has already got one gold medal and bronze from Sochi

:37:33. > :37:37.will get his way into the final and yes he does, second spot Liang

:37:38. > :37:40.Wenhao, and Jon Eley having to settle for fourth.

:37:41. > :37:44.CLARE BADLING: Disappointment for Jon Eley so now all British eyes

:37:45. > :37:47.were on Elise Christie after two crushing disappointments, would

:37:48. > :37:54.fortune smile on her now? COMMENTATOR: And there is Elise

:37:55. > :38:00.Christie, no legacy but she has dismissed that in her mind, Fan

:38:01. > :38:06.Kexin and the Chinese providing the bookends and the filling is provided

:38:07. > :38:14.by Elise Christie and since at any -- and Shim Suk Hee. The macro Elise

:38:15. > :38:26.comfortable and at the back. Can she said in that position when

:38:27. > :38:31.you are amongst this kind of crowd? There are still six laps to go. She

:38:32. > :38:35.could be waiting for the acceleration, the explosion coming

:38:36. > :38:37.around the outside. She is leaving it very, very late indeed with five

:38:38. > :38:50.laps to go. Come on, Braveheart, is Shim Suk Hee leading the charge of

:38:51. > :38:55.the Chinese. And when will Elise Christie make her move? The

:38:56. > :39:02.Livingston Express. You need to make a move now. Come on, Elise. The laps

:39:03. > :39:06.are going by, only two to go. She is slightly distant, or issue gathering

:39:07. > :39:10.herself for a run, here comes Elise Christie with the long run down the

:39:11. > :39:17.outside, she has ignited the burners and she is up to third. She has gone

:39:18. > :39:20.down the inside, brilliant piece of skating but the Chinese skater has

:39:21. > :39:23.challenged her again on the inside. And she falls and takes Elise

:39:24. > :39:29.Christie out on the line. First place goes to Shim Suk Hee and in

:39:30. > :39:36.second place, Fan Kexin but I think Elise Christie will be advanced, I

:39:37. > :39:38.would like to see that again. She was certainly in a qualifying

:39:39. > :39:45.position and again, turmoil for Elise Christie. To me, I think that

:39:46. > :39:49.is a clear-cut case of being advanced and I will very surprised

:39:50. > :39:57.if Elise does not get advanced will stop she has been the victim of

:39:58. > :40:04.calls that have cost her here. Oh, no! I cannot believe it, Li Jianrou

:40:05. > :40:08.has been penalised and so has Elise Christie and she will not advanced.

:40:09. > :40:14.It is becoming a habit now, I am talking to you with yet more

:40:15. > :40:18.disappointed and heartbreak. What was your view? It looked like you

:40:19. > :40:22.were taken out. It felt like I was pushed from behind and I was knocked

:40:23. > :40:27.off my feet. I don't understand how you can penalised two people but it

:40:28. > :40:32.is done and I have to accept that and that is the problem we have with

:40:33. > :40:39.short track, every referee will track the macro judge ace immersion

:40:40. > :40:43.-- every referee will judge it differently. I don't want to be

:40:44. > :40:47.known as crying on camera. You are doing a very good job, trust me. I

:40:48. > :40:56.really wanted to bounce back and today I was feeling so pumped. This

:40:57. > :41:00.last chance, the Olympics, I wanted to do it for everybody including

:41:01. > :41:03.myself. I was hammering the overtaking procedures, I have never

:41:04. > :41:10.done like that in my life and you have it taken off, the chance taken

:41:11. > :41:13.away... Whether I got a medal or not, it is devastating for the

:41:14. > :41:18.everybody in that final, I have beaten them. I will come back in

:41:19. > :41:20.four years and I will definitely work hard.

:41:21. > :41:23.CLARE BADLING: Elise Christie can do terms with another heartbreak and in

:41:24. > :41:27.the arena, the medals were also being decided.

:41:28. > :41:35.COMMENTATOR: We are away and the Russian got left, Victor An got left

:41:36. > :41:39.behind, he will be really stretched now but he connects with the tale of

:41:40. > :41:44.the line in front and they have a lot of work to do. China in

:41:45. > :41:53.second... Sorry, leading. Wu Dajing of China. And then it is Charle

:41:54. > :42:00.Cournoyer of Canada. Running at a distance but one of the Chinese

:42:01. > :42:05.skaters has gone. Surely Victor An cannot do it, he has gone down the

:42:06. > :42:09.inside, he is astonishing. He attacks the final bend and here he

:42:10. > :42:17.comes, Victor An takes it from Russia. Look at the face! What a

:42:18. > :42:23.skater! This is the ladies' 1000 metres final. And we are away. And

:42:24. > :42:32.already at the front, it is Park Seung-Hi. Jessica Smith moves

:42:33. > :42:33.through again, Dr Bull leading position -- comfortable leading

:42:34. > :42:47.position. Coming around the outside, Shim Suk

:42:48. > :42:56.Hee of Korea. They will be a view for a 1-2. Smith trying to get in

:42:57. > :43:03.the mix. But still at the front and looking very good indeed are the

:43:04. > :43:09.Koreans. And it is Shim Suk Hee, the 17-year-old now being challenged by

:43:10. > :43:14.Park Seung-Hi and now that changes and it is Park Seung-Hi on the

:43:15. > :43:18.front. What is happening here, the Koreans are keeping the pace so

:43:19. > :43:25.high, it is electric. The rest cannot get involved. Jessica Smith

:43:26. > :43:36.in third and Fan Kexin at the act literally clinging to the pace. It

:43:37. > :43:45.is still a Korean 1-2. Fan Kexin is trying to come down the outside and

:43:46. > :43:49.pick up the file -- firepower. Park Seung-Hi takes it. A victory salute

:43:50. > :43:57.for the winner. CLARE BADLING: All along, people

:43:58. > :44:00.said he would love short track speed skating, it is so unpredictable and

:44:01. > :44:04.you have to take the rough with the smooth but that is fine if you get

:44:05. > :44:07.no smooth at all which is what has happened to Elise Christie,

:44:08. > :44:11.absolutely desperate in all three races, she does not register a

:44:12. > :44:14.finish and has no chance of showing her capability. Let's discuss this

:44:15. > :44:19.and also say congratulations to Jon Eley and his third Olympic Games

:44:20. > :44:22.finishing seventh, well done to you and many congratulations in terms of

:44:23. > :44:26.being the team captain and carrying the flag at the opening ceremony.

:44:27. > :44:31.Let's talk about your race this hall and how satisfied are you with the

:44:32. > :44:35.Winter Olympics 2014? Thanks. I am pretty pleased it has been a tough

:44:36. > :44:40.year, didn't go that well in the Olympic qualifiers so I had a lot of

:44:41. > :44:43.work to do but my performance today, I am really pleased, I worked really

:44:44. > :44:47.hard and it has come out today like I wanted it to. The result was not

:44:48. > :44:55.what I wanted but at the end of the day I am happy. And you are not far

:44:56. > :45:01.behind Victor An as he is one of the greatest skaters of all times.

:45:02. > :45:05.Kilogram not too bad. What is your take on what has happened to Elise

:45:06. > :45:10.at these Games? And how do the people around you in your spot pick

:45:11. > :45:14.up again? As a team, we must see how well she has skated and how we have

:45:15. > :45:21.got into such a good position. The frustrating thing was the calls and

:45:22. > :45:25.the last little bits make a big difference, she skated so well and

:45:26. > :45:35.she has to take it and think that in four years time, she will be a real

:45:36. > :45:44.force. If you do not marry handing on the bat and two will appear, if

:45:45. > :45:49.we look at this what do you think happened to? She had so much speed,

:45:50. > :45:54.she was coming around the outside and here it was three laps to go and

:45:55. > :45:58.she had not made any moves at all. She was conserving energy and trying

:45:59. > :46:06.to stay out of trouble and coming around the outside. She comes up the

:46:07. > :46:10.inside their really well and then Li Jianrou of China really challenges

:46:11. > :46:15.the position and there is where I think the incident occurred. That is

:46:16. > :46:19.where they had contact and the second time they had contact you

:46:20. > :46:23.cannot see it from this angle unfortunately. Does she get

:46:24. > :46:28.disqualified because the initial incident leads to a fall? Woodchip

:46:29. > :46:34.got away with it if there had not been a fall? Quite possibly. You can

:46:35. > :46:40.see that she changes lanes almost and that was a very unfortunate

:46:41. > :46:45.call, she comes out of the bend, this is just going into the bend and

:46:46. > :46:49.that is where Li Jianrou goes down from China and takes Elise Christie

:46:50. > :46:53.with her which was ultimately the reason why. You see it again here.

:46:54. > :46:59.Initially the first initial contact when she was going down the

:47:00. > :47:04.straight, they elbow or knock shoulders. Had they held their

:47:05. > :47:10.balance they would have been fine but it is because it runs on. It is

:47:11. > :47:14.like a domino effect. In your considered experience and you have

:47:15. > :47:19.competed and had bad luck and good luck and you have watched an awful

:47:20. > :47:23.lot of short track speed skating, has Elise Christie been desperately

:47:24. > :47:29.unlucky at these games? I have been watching speed skating for 25 years

:47:30. > :47:33.and I have to say that she has been the most unlucky athlete speed

:47:34. > :47:40.skater that I have ever met in those 25 years. It is an incredibly crazy

:47:41. > :47:45.sport if you look at it in the last few days. We hope that at the age of

:47:46. > :47:49.just 23 there was time for her to come back and prove herself in

:47:50. > :47:53.Olympic cycles and World Championships as well. Ollie has

:47:54. > :47:58.been analysing the huge outpouring of opinion on the Internet. A lot of

:47:59. > :48:04.love for Elise Christie and a lot of confusion. At home it must've been

:48:05. > :48:08.very hard for to understand. This person tweeted that of everyone was

:48:09. > :48:12.penalised for the amount of contact she supposedly made them no one

:48:13. > :48:18.would finish. Another person complain that nobody was explaining

:48:19. > :48:23.what decisions the officials were making. Another person said it was

:48:24. > :48:28.standard behaviour in many of the sports and last night in the figure

:48:29. > :48:31.skating somebody won last night and nobody knew why. Apparently rugby

:48:32. > :48:36.league is great at it because you get to see the video referee the

:48:37. > :48:41.decisions being made and you can ask the referee on twitter as well.

:48:42. > :48:45.Another one said that maybe because it happened to us and maybe it

:48:46. > :48:50.happens more often, if the rule is to hold your line on the straight

:48:51. > :48:55.then the decision makes sense. Another tweet here is an agreement

:48:56. > :48:58.on the need for immediate explanations and it is a brutal

:48:59. > :49:03.sport but maybe the negative years because it has gone against us.

:49:04. > :49:09.Wilf, can I ask you that? You had a chance after the finals finished to

:49:10. > :49:14.find out what other nations thought. A lot of consensus from team leaders

:49:15. > :49:18.and media is that the lack of knowledge and understanding for the

:49:19. > :49:22.sport and we talked about that earlier, we needed to have what the

:49:23. > :49:27.referees are seeing and making the calls on. The general public and the

:49:28. > :49:31.TV need to see the same footage and then we can maybe all understand it

:49:32. > :49:36.rather than everybody being totally confused about what it is about.

:49:37. > :49:41.John, I am going to issue you this challenge because I assume you will

:49:42. > :49:45.keep racing for a while. Yes, could you try and fix it so we can find

:49:46. > :49:50.out why they are disqualifying people. I will try my best. As

:49:51. > :49:54.athletes we always say that you do not want to rely on the decision of

:49:55. > :49:58.the referee but you want to keep it as clean as possible and when the

:49:59. > :50:01.calls come we know from the last couple of competitions and how it

:50:02. > :50:05.has gone that you do not want to be in that situation. It is unfortunate

:50:06. > :50:09.and I really feel for her but we have to accept the decision of the

:50:10. > :50:14.referee at the end of the day and as a team we are frustrated. When you

:50:15. > :50:21.watch a skater of the quality of Victor An who can go outside and

:50:22. > :50:23.inside and he holds his balance and he never looks like falling over and

:50:24. > :50:29.that is amazing. He has incredible strength and maybe that will come in

:50:30. > :50:33.time. Thank you so much. We will now switch to biathlon. Russia have won

:50:34. > :50:37.the gold medal in this event for the last two Olympics cycles and Ukraine

:50:38. > :50:40.were trying to win their first gold of these games and athletes had

:50:41. > :50:45.decided to stay here in Sochi despite some of the other athletes

:50:46. > :50:52.going home because of the political unrest. There was a huge amount of

:50:53. > :51:00.support for them. The women's relay is under way to a huge roar from the

:51:01. > :51:03.Russians in the crowd. Ukraine clear five and Russia clear five and a big

:51:04. > :51:09.cheer coming up from the crowd. Eight rounds to clear the targets.

:51:10. > :51:13.What a tussle for gold this is turning out to be at this stage. The

:51:14. > :51:18.French have gone and the Germans have gone for now. One by one the

:51:19. > :51:26.big nations are falling by the wayside but not the Russians and not

:51:27. > :51:38.the Ukrainians. Look at the ground that has been made up. We have got

:51:39. > :51:41.Russia and Norway coming into the stadium side-by-side in third and

:51:42. > :51:47.fourth. What drama lies in store in the second part of this race? The

:51:48. > :51:52.Russians are coming. Look at how quickly they are closing down.

:51:53. > :51:59.Superb shooting and Ukraine could be on their way to the gold. This has

:52:00. > :52:05.been a quartet unbeaten by the opposition, unbeaten by politics and

:52:06. > :52:10.united by passion, it is gold for Ukraine, silver for Russia and

:52:11. > :52:16.bronze for the Norwegians in the women's relay. What an amazing

:52:17. > :52:33.evening for Ukraine! So richly deserved. A wonderful result there.

:52:34. > :52:38.A German athlete has been thrown out of the Olympics for taking a banned

:52:39. > :52:47.stimulant. That is Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle. Bobsleigh

:52:48. > :52:52.athlete has also been sent home, William Frullani. His is for a

:52:53. > :52:57.substance that he could've taken inadvertently through a nasal

:52:58. > :53:02.decongestant. There are more drugs test at this Winter Olympics than

:53:03. > :53:06.ever before. These two cases means that the Winter Olympics has had

:53:07. > :53:10.more positive tests than Vancouver which was incredibly low, only one

:53:11. > :53:15.athlete was caught there. We are going to head behind me into the

:53:16. > :53:19.Bolshoi arena. Four years ago the final was between the USA and Canada

:53:20. > :53:24.and it went into overtime and Canada emerged with a gold medal. This time

:53:25. > :53:25.around they are up against each other in the semifinal and this is

:53:26. > :53:54.what happened. He scores on the redirect. Canada

:53:55. > :53:59.take the lead. They are the stars of this second period. Good interplay

:54:00. > :54:09.on the zone -- in the zone. It is food for thought for the Americans

:54:10. > :54:20.stop tremendous work from the Canadians in the offensive zone. It

:54:21. > :54:26.is an easy goal from there. It goes back to Big Ben there. It is

:54:27. > :54:38.perfection, right there in front and they get their opening goal.

:54:39. > :54:45.He just needs to hold this on the board. The Americans sent everybody

:54:46. > :54:49.in there but Canada are going through to the final. The defending

:54:50. > :54:52.champions will get a chance to defend that title in the gold-medal

:54:53. > :55:05.game against Sweden. Fantastic stuff there, and in the

:55:06. > :55:12.other semifinal Sweden emerged successful. They beat Finland 2-1.

:55:13. > :55:17.They are chasing their third Olympic gold. They have won all of their

:55:18. > :55:22.games so far despite losing some key players to injury so the final will

:55:23. > :55:26.be between Canada and Sweden. Canada are renowned for having strong

:55:27. > :55:30.finishes at the Winter Olympics. In Vancouver they got 14 gold medals so

:55:31. > :55:41.let us look at the table as it stands.

:55:42. > :55:47.The USA are doing all right. They have a lot of bronzes. Germany have

:55:48. > :55:58.slipped a bit and here is our British medals podium. It is getting

:55:59. > :56:05.full up. We have at least one of every colour. Tomorrow Hazel will be

:56:06. > :56:10.back bright and early and we start at 9am with snowboarding and men's

:56:11. > :56:14.slalom which is the last Alpine event to come. There will be

:56:15. > :56:19.coverage all afternoon and we will be back in the evening. It is time

:56:20. > :56:29.now, in what has become a tradition in this programme for the Winter

:56:30. > :56:35.Wonders. Last week we highlighted the Swiss hockey team's taste for

:56:36. > :56:41.slapstick. They have been at it again and they won a bronze medal,

:56:42. > :56:45.congratulations. After the moustache extravaganza last night, this maple

:56:46. > :56:59.leaf chest hair. Should have died it read! Why have we got here then?

:57:00. > :57:04.It is official, Great Britain now have their best ever haul at the

:57:05. > :57:08.Winter Olympics which is largely thanks to these guys for winning a

:57:09. > :57:13.silver in the curling and we offer them the congratulations and they

:57:14. > :57:16.add to the bronze medals and the gold for Lizzy Yarnold. For Elise

:57:17. > :57:20.Christie we will make sure she gets a great big hug because things have

:57:21. > :57:24.not gone her way at all but that is the nature of sport which gives and

:57:25. > :57:29.gives and snatches away and we all know that. You have all trained hard

:57:30. > :57:33.to get where you are today. Good luck to them and I'm sure if you

:57:34. > :57:41.took a broom to work you did good work with it. Goodbye!
