0:00:53 > 0:00:55And again, turmoil for Christie.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00And again, turmoil for Christie.I can't believe that. She has been

0:01:00 > 0:01:05penalised again.Elise Christie gets the chance to race for gold. A

0:01:05 > 0:01:12nation holds its breath.Christie tries to make it on the inside and

0:01:12 > 0:01:17she crashes out. Christie is out of that once again.Elise Christie,

0:01:17 > 0:01:23trying to get to the Olympic final. She has crashed again on the final

0:01:23 > 0:01:30bend, yet again she ends up in a distraught heap

0:01:31 > 0:01:37The Olympic flame burning brightly in Pyeongchang on day 11 of these

0:01:37 > 0:01:43Winter Games and a fire in Elise Christie's belly means she is out on

0:01:43 > 0:01:48the ice, hoping to skate in this morning's heats of the 1000 metre.

0:01:48 > 0:01:53She suffered a nasty ankle injury after crashed a night of Saturday's

0:01:53 > 0:01:581500 metres semifinals and after spending some time in visible

0:01:58 > 0:02:02discomfort the 27-year-old left the Gangwang Ice Arena in tears on a

0:02:02 > 0:02:08stretcher after her bid for a first Olympic medal once again ended in

0:02:08 > 0:02:12despair. You she is this morning in the 1000 metre heats, hopefully

0:02:12 > 0:02:16later on, she has been on the ice practising today and in an hour's

0:02:16 > 0:02:21time we expect to see her on the start line. She is going in the

0:02:21 > 0:02:26fifth heat. Let us get the news from the camp. The performance direct for

0:02:26 > 0:02:33short track speed skating is Stuart Blanco. -- is Stewart Laing. The

0:02:33 > 0:02:39news is that a lease is going to try and raise. What does that mean

0:02:39 > 0:02:43western market we've worked really hard over the last two days to get

0:02:43 > 0:02:47into the position she is in now and what we have said all the way

0:02:47 > 0:02:51through is that we take each step as it comes. She is heading an here,

0:02:51 > 0:02:56going to get on the warm up ice, see how her ankle is, and make a

0:02:56 > 0:03:00decision after that.If you were to assess her fitness in percentage

0:03:00 > 0:03:05terms for the layperson, where we did he?Good question, we don't work

0:03:05 > 0:03:11in percentages like that. I would say she is strong, able to do the

0:03:11 > 0:03:14majority of the things we would be looking for in the thousand metres

0:03:14 > 0:03:18and I would say she is probably going to take to the ice around

0:03:18 > 0:03:2480-90% fitness. Our Uihlein lead to look at her when she gets the ice

0:03:24 > 0:03:29and say she is 80-90% and say we will give it a go, what you have to

0:03:29 > 0:03:34be satisfied with?Do be fair, the decision is with her, we have done

0:03:34 > 0:03:39the medical reviews up at HQ, the performance and medical team are

0:03:39 > 0:03:43happy with where she is out, now it's a confidence and safety thing

0:03:43 > 0:03:47which is why she will come down, get onto the warm up ice and we will

0:03:47 > 0:03:51reassess and make sure the ankle is OK and then we will take it from

0:03:51 > 0:03:58there.How is she? She seems quite chirpy on social media, is she well

0:03:58 > 0:04:02mentally?Absolutely, you know what she is like, her usual playful self,

0:04:02 > 0:04:07she's been on social media, wishing all the other Team GB members good

0:04:07 > 0:04:10luck and well done but their performances, she was singing on the

0:04:10 > 0:04:15eyes this morning in training, she's in the best place that she can be.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18That is good news for all her fans and good news for her friends, Sarah

0:04:18 > 0:04:23Lindsay was part of the short track speed skating family for over a

0:04:23 > 0:04:29decade, you've known her since she was 15, she came down from Scotland,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32left school, set herself up in Nottingham, what is your ink of the

0:04:32 > 0:04:37situation?Firstly how amazing she is back on the ice after being

0:04:37 > 0:04:42stretchered off on Saturday, she has an amazing support team, and they've

0:04:42 > 0:04:46got her back on today, she skated this morning and she feels good.In

0:04:46 > 0:04:50this day and age, the way athletes communicate with the public is not

0:04:50 > 0:04:54through press officers, is through the medium of social media and this

0:04:54 > 0:05:03is what she had to say today. To everyone, at I'm just about to go

0:05:03 > 0:05:08and try and compete, I skated this morning for the first time and it

0:05:08 > 0:05:11went quite well considering the circumstances. I'm looking forward

0:05:11 > 0:05:15to seeing if I can get out there today, and like to thank everyone

0:05:15 > 0:05:18who helped me get to this point and everyone for their support back

0:05:18 > 0:05:23home.She was smiling, she was singing on the eyes this morning,

0:05:23 > 0:05:28this is remarkable, isn't it?She's tough, she has one race today, she

0:05:28 > 0:05:33has to get out there and get through the race, she's not going to be 100%

0:05:33 > 0:05:37but that gets very today she buys herself a couple of extra days

0:05:37 > 0:05:41recovery before she has to scape the quarters and semis and the final on

0:05:41 > 0:05:49Thursday. Let's head out to the arena.Wilf O'Reilly will be the

0:05:49 > 0:05:54expert analyst. He can join us now. We'll 80-90% be good enough to get

0:05:54 > 0:06:00through her heat?

0:06:00 > 0:06:04through her heat?I would have thought so, on paper she should get

0:06:04 > 0:06:07through quite comfortable, she is in the fifth heat, she will know what's

0:06:07 > 0:06:13happened at the races prior to her heat, getting through first second

0:06:13 > 0:06:17will qualify, 80-90% should be sufficient even though it's an

0:06:17 > 0:06:25Olympic first round.Who else should we look out for?I think at the

0:06:25 > 0:06:30moment, the Chinese are having a real disaster games. The first time

0:06:30 > 0:06:34there's never been a Chinese skater in the final. They will be looking

0:06:34 > 0:06:41to make amends. The Canadian timber town has had a medal in the 500

0:06:41 > 0:06:45metres and the 1500 and I think Choi, she was looking amazing in the

0:06:45 > 0:06:521500. Quite a large pool of people that could take medals on Thursday

0:06:52 > 0:06:56and as there is said, if Elise Christie skates today she will buy

0:06:56 > 0:07:01herself another 48 hours' time to go into the quarterfinals on Thursday.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06You've seen her, I assume today, how do you think she is looking? She

0:07:06 > 0:07:12looked quite comfortable, the 1000 metres, I say, it's an elongated

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Sprint, the start would be quite important, I think that is where the

0:07:15 > 0:07:18problem is going to be, to be able to start comfortably and get on the

0:07:18 > 0:07:24pace run the word go.I'm assuming we can definitively said she will

0:07:24 > 0:07:27start because they were telling us earlier if they were going to pull

0:07:27 > 0:07:33her out they would have had to have said by 9am our time which would be

0:07:33 > 0:07:4025 minutes ago. That's right, ultimately she could not show up on

0:07:40 > 0:07:45the start line, she would get a did not finish, it's called that she has

0:07:45 > 0:07:50to make herself, does she feel confident and comfortable enough,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54all the medal support team are quite happy that it's not going to be a

0:07:54 > 0:07:59long-term injury if she skates.Just a word on Charlotte Gilmartin and

0:07:59 > 0:08:04Kat Thomson, Charlotte has had two heavy falls, is she in a physical

0:08:04 > 0:08:11and mental state, and good enough to get through?Again, on paper, I

0:08:11 > 0:08:15think both of the skaters are quite comfortably capable of getting

0:08:15 > 0:08:20through to the next round, it is the Olympic Games. One of the things in

0:08:20 > 0:08:23the Olympics that is different from the World Championships, the World

0:08:23 > 0:08:28Championships is an accumulation of points, the Olympics is a one-off

0:08:28 > 0:08:32hit and unfortunately it hasn't been going too well so far.Thank you, we

0:08:32 > 0:08:35will hear you in commentary and we will be joining many of those heats

0:08:35 > 0:08:41to give you the full story. Sarah, from the point of view of someone

0:08:41 > 0:08:44who understands short track speed skating and has been in these

0:08:44 > 0:08:48situations with heavy crashes, trying to get up, to skate with

0:08:48 > 0:08:52pain, when do you feel it and how does it affect you, do you feel it

0:08:52 > 0:08:57at the start? The ankle problem is going to be at the start of the

0:08:57 > 0:09:02race, there is a lot more impact, luckily this is not 500 metres, the

0:09:02 > 0:09:06start in the 1000, it's important to get into a good position early on

0:09:06 > 0:09:10but she has great speed and she can't make moves and can overtake,

0:09:10 > 0:09:15even if she's not 100% from the start it is not crucial. She is

0:09:15 > 0:09:19going to be in-line two, the way she's been skating, I remember you

0:09:19 > 0:09:23said in the semis you felt she was leaving it a bit too late and

0:09:23 > 0:09:27therefore got herself into a slight panicky situation which ended up in

0:09:27 > 0:09:33the crash. Would you rather she simplify things?I think for her in

0:09:33 > 0:09:37the next race she needs to skate clean, get through and I think if

0:09:37 > 0:09:41she makes an early move and gets to the front, takes control of the

0:09:41 > 0:09:46race, she is going to lead in and coast through quite nicely. The 500

0:09:46 > 0:09:51metres, ad is really frightening, the 1500, she sort of dismissed, all

0:09:51 > 0:09:56the way she's been saying 1000 is my aim.Yes, she likes the thousand

0:09:56 > 0:09:59metres, considers at her best distance but I really think we need

0:09:59 > 0:10:06to look at one race at a time and be happy that she has recovered so

0:10:06 > 0:10:10quickly from a nasty crash and she's back on the ice which is great.

0:10:10 > 0:10:15Exactly, incredibly impressive. We'll hear more from Sarah later,

0:10:15 > 0:10:19here are some of the other names to look out for this morning.

0:10:19 > 0:10:27look out for this morning.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32As we mentioned, 22-year-old Kat Thomson fighting for a place in the

0:10:32 > 0:10:37quarterfinals, Charlotte Gilmartin has had two two events. Huge day for

0:10:37 > 0:10:42both curling the men face the fancy pants of Norway and the women got

0:10:42 > 0:10:48the game is back on track with a win against Japan, we've should you a

0:10:48 > 0:10:51record-breaking ice dance competition as two of the very best

0:10:51 > 0:10:55went head-to-head and the costumes stayed intact. Mica McNeill and make

0:10:55 > 0:10:59a more who have been helped by cried funding campaign are the only

0:10:59 > 0:11:04British arbours and will be live for the wrong this morning and we will

0:11:04 > 0:11:11see how the Jamaican bobsleigh team there. The coach but, taking the Bob

0:11:11 > 0:11:16with them but they are by contract, literally. Nigeria, the first

0:11:16 > 0:11:19African nation to compete in bobsleigh are there too. We'll catch

0:11:19 > 0:11:24up on the latest in a curling in case you weren't up in the early

0:11:24 > 0:11:29hours, the men and women from Britain had crucial qualifying

0:11:29 > 0:11:29matches, we

0:11:29 > 0:11:30Britain had crucial qualifying matches, we look at the ice dancing

0:11:30 > 0:11:38before going to the short track speed skating. All the great British

0:11:38 > 0:11:42women in action. The fast and furious 500 metres men's qualifying

0:11:42 > 0:11:50and we will see the gold decider in the 3000 metres relay for the women.

0:11:54 > 0:11:59Catching up on everything else. We will head onto BBC Two after 1pm,

0:11:59 > 0:12:08concentrating on the women's bobsleigh and ice hockey.

0:12:08 > 0:12:16And the news from ice hockey, the men's ice hockey player from

0:12:16 > 0:12:22Slovenia Seagate year glitch has tested positive for a banned

0:12:22 > 0:12:28substance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed he tested

0:12:28 > 0:12:32positive for fenoterol, a drug which opens up the airways, he has

0:12:32 > 0:12:38accepted it and will leave the Olympics within 24 hours.

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Olympics within 24 hours. Three Olympic old medallists, Torvill and

0:12:41 > 0:12:45Dean which is wonderful.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Olympic old medallists, Torvill and Dean which is wonderful. Rhona

0:12:46 > 0:12:57mentioning the drugs story with the Slovenian ice hockey star.

0:12:57 > 0:13:02Slovenian ice hockey star. -- Ziga Jeglic. It looks as if the athletes

0:13:02 > 0:13:11might lose the medals, a drug, Maria Sharapova tested was a dearth for,

0:13:11 > 0:13:18meldonium. What is that men to do? I have no idea! LAUGHTER I would not

0:13:18 > 0:13:27have a clue, once the B sample is in, they will make a decision.The

0:13:27 > 0:13:36Russian athletes were all to be clean, you know.It helps with the

0:13:36 > 0:13:40insurance, that drug, doesn't it?It may not help but the actual sport

0:13:40 > 0:13:42you are playing it's all about training and getting ready for it.

0:13:42 > 0:13:48Absolutely. But as appointing, given that the Olympic Athletes from

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Russia are supposed to be clean. Given everything that we have gone

0:13:52 > 0:13:55through to get to this point, it's disappointing. His wife will be

0:13:55 > 0:14:01furious. She knows it's her bronze level as well and that is not good

0:14:01 > 0:14:05news. Let's have a look at the standings. This is one of the

0:14:05 > 0:14:09biggest days or British curling, bar none, here is work the British men

0:14:09 > 0:14:13were willing into their game today and in very good third place, to be

0:14:13 > 0:14:18honest. Playing really well, Kyle Smith in his rink, getting stronger,

0:14:18 > 0:14:24joint third with Canada. But they did need another good result and

0:14:24 > 0:14:29they were up against Norway and Rhona, you called Norway... Fancy

0:14:29 > 0:14:35pants. They were very exciting trousers. With the hammer in the

0:14:35 > 0:14:39first end, Kyle Smith with this shot to take three.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43first end, Kyle Smith with this shot to take three.Yes, an open draw for

0:14:43 > 0:14:48three, not a hard shot, Norway just did not make the shot in the first

0:14:48 > 0:14:53end. What an opportunity for Britain. Open draw for three, thank

0:14:53 > 0:15:00you.The start, going 3-0 up, into the second end, Norway with the

0:15:00 > 0:15:06hammer.

0:15:06 > 0:15:15Yes, so again just struggling in this game to get off the mark. And

0:15:15 > 0:15:22he is saying, come on, do it more. And he caught the top one, and gave

0:15:22 > 0:15:27Britain won, so 4-0 up for Great Britain. So that is pretty close. Do

0:15:27 > 0:15:33they have to get the measuring stick out? Great Britain had stolen one,

0:15:33 > 0:15:43so they went 4-0 up into the fourth Ed.And again, going into this

0:15:43 > 0:15:46fourth end, it is so imported from Britain to score when they have got

0:15:46 > 0:15:51their last stone and keep that advantage of the lead. So again,

0:15:51 > 0:16:03really nice shot from Kyle. Just a wee Nick, and perfect for Britain.

0:16:03 > 0:16:08And into ends six with Great Britain now leading 6-3, and this was pretty

0:16:08 > 0:16:15impressive.Again, Norway trying to throw

0:16:15 > 0:16:19throw everything at them again, Britain had the hammer and yet

0:16:19 > 0:16:26again, a great shot from Kyle, the draw for three. And thanks very

0:16:26 > 0:16:32much.And 9-3 is a really big lead. Norway carried on.They did.But

0:16:32 > 0:16:38they needed something massive to happen here.Yes, throwing

0:16:38 > 0:16:42everything at it, trying to score a big end to get back in the game, and

0:16:42 > 0:16:47it just wasn't working for Thomas Ulsrud today, everything he tried,

0:16:47 > 0:16:56he struggled. And that pushes the red right into the centre of the

0:16:56 > 0:17:01house, so it gives Great Britain the steel. Under that point, Norway

0:17:01 > 0:17:05conceded. So, the handshakes were made, and that means Great Britain

0:17:05 > 0:17:10are now into second equal with Canada and Switzerland, so looking

0:17:10 > 0:17:14really safe. One more round robin match left against the USA. Would

0:17:14 > 0:17:19you expect them to win that anyway? Certainly the way the boys are

0:17:19 > 0:17:24playing, definitely.Sweden have already qualified, eight matches,

0:17:24 > 0:17:28just one loss. But the Great Britain men getting stronger as the

0:17:28 > 0:17:31competition goes on?They are definitely gaining in confidence,

0:17:31 > 0:17:35their shot play is much more accurate, they are making a few half

0:17:35 > 0:17:40shots before but now they are really on top of it. The ice is winning

0:17:40 > 0:17:45more with the stones being sounded a little, and the boys are playing

0:17:45 > 0:17:49well and looking confident.Rhona was saying earlier on, the question

0:17:49 > 0:17:55she was asked on Radio 2 by Chris Evans. What did he ask you?Can you

0:17:55 > 0:18:04curl on skating ice? Because there are quite a few skating rinks in

0:18:04 > 0:18:07England...

0:18:07 > 0:18:13are quite a few skating rinks in England...Sacrilegious! For the

0:18:13 > 0:18:17curlers, that is. They need the ice very smooth. We have turned up at a

0:18:17 > 0:18:21curling before saying could we just get our feet on the ice, and they

0:18:21 > 0:18:30gasp. No we.Torvill and Dean, get out of here, you can't skate on our

0:18:30 > 0:18:35ice! Let's have a look at the women's standings. Many people may

0:18:35 > 0:18:40have woken up to see Eve Muirhead in action, and again, with the women,

0:18:40 > 0:18:44they have had their ups and downs, they had a really unlucky incident

0:18:44 > 0:18:54against Sweden with a hog line violation against Muirhead. But

0:18:54 > 0:18:57basically they needed a win. It would settle the nerves and leave

0:18:57 > 0:19:02their fate in their own hands. It was against Japan, and they have had

0:19:02 > 0:19:10a very good game so far. But at the end of ends six with the scores dead

0:19:10 > 0:19:15level, what happens here? They had taken three, Japan, and Britain had

0:19:15 > 0:19:17fought back well.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19taken three, Japan, and Britain had fought back well. They had fought

0:19:19 > 0:19:22back and really went for it in the sixth end, but they don't have the

0:19:22 > 0:19:28hammer. But Japan are lying, and they have got that second and third

0:19:28 > 0:19:32counter, so it is so important for Eve to lie second shot, which she

0:19:32 > 0:19:37does perfectly behind cover. So the Japanese skip now needs to do what?

0:19:37 > 0:19:43She could lift this double to take a three, which I feel is a turning

0:19:43 > 0:19:46point in the game, because it certainly turned it in Britain's

0:19:46 > 0:19:54favour now, because they swept this the whole way and just further the

0:19:54 > 0:20:02guard.And that knocked it off line, and meant that Britain stole. They

0:20:02 > 0:20:06had a steal. To steal three is a massive point in the six then.Japan

0:20:06 > 0:20:10got right back in on their tails again, Britain now leading 6-5 with

0:20:10 > 0:20:16the hammer in the eighth. And this is where Japan set up the end well,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20they are actually lying three at this point, and this is a key shot

0:20:20 > 0:20:21Eve

0:20:21 > 0:20:27this point, and this is a key shot Eve.And again, you want to not

0:20:27 > 0:20:31touch that guard, which she doesn't. And she comes in and that the yellow

0:20:31 > 0:20:36back and lies in the shot, and that is fantastic there. It really puts

0:20:36 > 0:20:42the pressure on Japan. So, into the tenth end, Britain now with 85-

0:20:42 > 0:20:57lead. -- now with an 8-5 lead. And open take out, just needs to put it

0:20:57 > 0:21:05anywhere and she has won the game. Perfect. So, a little edgy at times

0:21:05 > 0:21:09from both skips, but some great shot play by the British team, and

0:21:09 > 0:21:14another win on the board. And you sense that the more urgent it gets,

0:21:14 > 0:21:19the better Eve Muirhead plays. Great Britain up to third equal now with

0:21:19 > 0:21:24Japan. South Korea, the host nation, have already qualified, so it is

0:21:24 > 0:21:27semifinals next and that will decide who goes into the gold medal match

0:21:27 > 0:21:31and who goes into the bronze medal match, but Great Britain have one

0:21:31 > 0:21:35more match against Canada, who are struggling.Absolutely, they lost

0:21:35 > 0:21:40the first three and won the next three, but they lost this morning,

0:21:40 > 0:21:44so they are on a sticky wicket right now, they know they have Britain to

0:21:44 > 0:21:49play, Rachel Homan and Eve Muirhead have played a lot of games against

0:21:49 > 0:21:54each other and they know each other well.New light on what is their

0:21:54 > 0:21:59head-to-head record?It is pretty even, I don't know exact numbers. So

0:21:59 > 0:22:03this game coming up is a big game, more sofa Canada than Britain.I

0:22:03 > 0:22:07know how supportive all of those Olympic athletes are to each other,

0:22:07 > 0:22:13and I know Eve Muirhead and all the guys will be sending all their

0:22:13 > 0:22:18positive vibes towards Elise Christie. She really does look happy

0:22:18 > 0:22:21on the exercise bike. I think the relief that that soft tissue damage,

0:22:21 > 0:22:26it might hurt, but it is not going to prevent her skating, and she will

0:22:26 > 0:22:31be out there in heat five of the 1000 metres at around about quarter

0:22:31 > 0:22:35past ten this morning, that is a remarkable recovery facility who was

0:22:35 > 0:22:38taken off on a stretcher after the semifinals of the 1500m and thought

0:22:38 > 0:22:46that her were over. She is looking very strong, so let's just hope, to

0:22:46 > 0:22:53be honest, it is time for her luck to turn, please? Right, let us

0:22:53 > 0:22:56discuss the record-breaking ice dance competition, which after the

0:22:56 > 0:23:00short programme now moved into the free programme. For in a half

0:23:00 > 0:23:05minutes for the two best couples in the world to freely express

0:23:05 > 0:23:10themselves, and you can see that the French pair had such trouble there,

0:23:10 > 0:23:17because

0:23:17 > 0:23:21because Gabriela's dress had a trouble which stopped producing her

0:23:21 > 0:23:26best, they were up against Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Let's join

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Robin Cousins and Katherine Downes. COMMENTATOR: This is the ice dance

0:23:30 > 0:23:37free dance here at the Gangneung Ice Arena, and we will see gold, silver

0:23:37 > 0:23:41and bronze handed out on this final day of the Olympic competition.

0:23:41 > 0:23:46Silver medal position at the moment for the two-time world champions

0:23:46 > 0:23:51Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, the reigning European

0:23:51 > 0:23:55champions, and they are less than two points behind Tessa Virtue and

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Scott Moir, who lead the way at the moment. That wardrobe malfunction,

0:23:59 > 0:24:06her dress falling off during the performance yesterday, really

0:24:06 > 0:24:09knocked them, but still less than a point in it.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15APPLAUSE

0:28:22 > 0:28:26Its silky, it's smooth, it's sublime. From the off, this was

0:28:26 > 0:28:31billed as a battle for goal between them at their training partners,

0:28:31 > 0:28:39Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue. Papadakis and Cizeron saying, be

0:28:39 > 0:28:45that.Individually strong, good, solid skaters. Together, it's

0:28:45 > 0:28:49special, and that's what happens. The music will start and then you

0:28:49 > 0:28:55see, and it is the detail for me, even the way the fingers intertwined

0:28:55 > 0:29:01in the opening move, it just draws you in, come answer your attention.

0:29:01 > 0:29:06And they feel every moment that they are together, there is that

0:29:06 > 0:29:13connection.

0:29:13 > 0:29:26connection.A new season's best, a new world

0:29:26 > 0:29:30new world record, 123.35. And it is going to be a very big ask now for

0:29:30 > 0:29:38Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to claim their second Olympic title. Tessa

0:29:38 > 0:29:43Virtue and Scott Moir, then, the world champions, the 2010 Olympic

0:29:43 > 0:29:46champions, in the gold medal position coming into this free

0:29:46 > 0:29:51dance, but they are going to be extraordinary if they want to win

0:29:51 > 0:29:55this gold medal. They are going to need to beat the new world record

0:29:55 > 0:29:59laid down by Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron just two routines

0:29:59 > 0:30:05ago.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38CHEERING

0:33:38 > 0:33:41CHEERING

0:33:59 > 0:34:01CHEERING

0:34:01 > 0:34:04CHEERING

0:34:11 > 0:34:14It's brilliant but is it enough for Olympic old?

0:34:14 > 0:34:20The world champions from Canada. They wanted to deliver and they

0:34:20 > 0:34:26certainly did! I tell you, I am looking at the screen is trying to

0:34:26 > 0:34:33do the maths and it is tight at the top. Goodness me.They know they

0:34:33 > 0:34:39could not have done any more. Tessa Burchill and Scott Boyer had no

0:34:39 > 0:34:43wriggle room, there was nothing for them to play with, they could not

0:34:43 > 0:34:50leave it out on the ice. They didn't, they absolutely smashed it.

0:34:50 > 0:34:57-- Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. They have done it!The comeback is

0:34:57 > 0:35:05complete. Silver in Sochi four years ago, they took two years away from

0:35:05 > 0:35:11competition, they returned to win World Championship gold last year

0:35:11 > 0:35:21and now it's Olympic gold! Absolutely thrilling. Phenomenal.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25Amazing champions, an amazing performer is! Yes, very different to

0:35:25 > 0:35:34Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. These two are supreme.I

0:35:34 > 0:35:38don't think we could have skated any better and with the pressure

0:35:38 > 0:35:41mounting we sort of felt the weight of the world as we took to the ice

0:35:41 > 0:35:46and we looked at each other and said, let's skate for us, we deserve

0:35:46 > 0:35:49this already and we love this programme, least we were able to do

0:35:49 > 0:35:55that.He went into the programme knowing you needed a massive

0:35:55 > 0:36:07performance to beat a world record scorer. We train with Gaby and her

0:36:07 > 0:36:13partner, we had to come out hungry and have our day we did that, that's

0:36:13 > 0:36:17what we are most proud of, a lot of things can go different ways, we

0:36:17 > 0:36:20stuck to our plan, we are proud to come out of this competition with a

0:36:20 > 0:36:24gold.When you do a world record performance and you don't get the

0:36:24 > 0:36:31gold, what do you feel about that? You know, it's... It's sport, it's

0:36:31 > 0:36:39like that. What is done is done, the points are what they are, we are

0:36:39 > 0:36:44proud of what we did today. We had such a good feeling on the ice, it

0:36:44 > 0:36:49was one of the most incredible experiences we have ever had so far.

0:36:49 > 0:36:55We are just really trying to enjoy that. What a competition. And for

0:36:55 > 0:37:01Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, there are third Olympic gold medal, they

0:37:01 > 0:37:05won one in the team competition in Pyeongchang, in Vancouver in front

0:37:05 > 0:37:09of their home crowd but this, the tightest of the lot, you see the

0:37:09 > 0:37:18brother and sister payer, Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, only

0:37:18 > 0:37:24the second brother and sister pairing to get the medal. Who were

0:37:24 > 0:37:33the others? It was a French team. I have always loved the Canadian

0:37:33 > 0:37:36pairing, the fact they happen dancing and skating together since

0:37:36 > 0:37:40they were kids, over 20 years, this was the gold medal winning

0:37:40 > 0:37:44performance in Vancouver, a huge moment for Canada. They got beaten

0:37:44 > 0:37:50in Sochi, retired, came back again and the only player that have beaten

0:37:50 > 0:37:55them are Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. This was billed

0:37:55 > 0:37:59as the big clash and they were so far clear up the bronze medallist,

0:37:59 > 0:38:06it was about a big two.Amazing event, I got tingles watching both

0:38:06 > 0:38:11performances, completely different styles of skating. The French

0:38:11 > 0:38:15pairing have that beautiful clarity of line, almost like ballet and then

0:38:15 > 0:38:20you have the drama, the emotion that Scott and Tessa bring to the ice.

0:38:20 > 0:38:26Those two styles were completely different. It was a choice. The

0:38:26 > 0:38:34judges are looking at it technically and artistically and in actual fact,

0:38:34 > 0:38:39Gaby, they won the free dance but it was all to do with the short dance,

0:38:39 > 0:38:43but sort of lost them the medal because they were just one and a

0:38:43 > 0:38:46half points behind and it was so tight in the free dance. That was

0:38:46 > 0:38:53the result at the end.I have to ask you, Chris, it was so dramatic when

0:38:53 > 0:38:57she stood on her partner's legs when he was squatting, surely the blades

0:38:57 > 0:39:04heard their legs.It does, trust me. I stood on his legs a few times.But

0:39:04 > 0:39:11it's all about holding tone. You two love this routine. Beautiful to

0:39:11 > 0:39:16watch, fluid, organic. And you could just watch it and not worry about

0:39:16 > 0:39:22anything happening. No dress malfunction today, it was just,

0:39:22 > 0:39:29yes...We have an empathy with these guys, I have worked with them on

0:39:29 > 0:39:34their short dance, such a lovely couple, very gentle, good sense of

0:39:34 > 0:39:37humour, their style of skating is not representative of them because

0:39:37 > 0:39:42they are good-humoured and fund but the quality of skating is second to

0:39:42 > 0:39:46none.Robin Cousins said and commentary when they stayed together

0:39:46 > 0:39:52something special happens.Yes, they have a special aura about them and I

0:39:52 > 0:39:56think they don't realise it, do they, how good they are?Would you

0:39:56 > 0:40:08say the reason they didn't win the gold-medal, Tessa Virtue and Scott

0:40:08 > 0:40:13Moir won the free dance, they lost it because her dress broke. That's

0:40:13 > 0:40:17taking it away from Scott and Tessa, they had an amazing performance.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21What they have done for skating is amazing but look at the clinically,

0:40:21 > 0:40:27it all happened in that short dance. It did, didn't it? As for Nick

0:40:27 > 0:40:31Buckland and Penny Coomes, they have done so well to get here to

0:40:31 > 0:40:35Pyeongchang, you think they'll be happy enough with their performance,

0:40:35 > 0:40:39making it through to the free, finishing 11th?I think for them,

0:40:39 > 0:40:43they would have liked to have finished higher but given the

0:40:43 > 0:40:48adversity they have had with pennies bashing her kneecap in eight lasers,

0:40:48 > 0:40:53Nick has had his heart issues, a couple of years before that, getting

0:40:53 > 0:40:59to this Olympics is an Olympic event in itself. -- Penny smashing her

0:40:59 > 0:41:07kneecap in eight places.Given the issues they had, is there another

0:41:07 > 0:41:12Olympics in them?I think they have decided, this is the third Olympics,

0:41:12 > 0:41:21isn't it?You know what? Never say never. That is a neighbour. We

0:41:21 > 0:41:26thought that after 84 and you know, ten years later, we said, let's give

0:41:26 > 0:41:33it another go.Crazy people! It can happen. For a Tessa and Scott, they

0:41:33 > 0:41:37have been skating together such a long time, the comeback has worked,

0:41:37 > 0:41:41two gold medals from these games, look at how young they were. My

0:41:41 > 0:41:49goodness.Nine and six. It's endearing, in competition now a lot

0:41:49 > 0:41:53of people change partners but to see these guys from such an early age

0:41:53 > 0:41:59staying together for that length of time, it clearly helps. They are 28

0:41:59 > 0:42:03and 30, that's not ancient. No, no, it shows the passion they have for

0:42:03 > 0:42:08it to be determined to come back and not finish where they were as silver

0:42:08 > 0:42:12medallists, they wanted to get back to being gold medallist.Third

0:42:12 > 0:42:18Olympics, we were 35... It would be a third gold medal but a fourth

0:42:18 > 0:42:26Olympics.How old did you say you were?35.

0:42:26 > 0:42:32were?35. I wasn't!She was older! I knew he was going to do that. Thank

0:42:32 > 0:42:35you both so much, thrilling competition, dutiful to see that

0:42:35 > 0:42:44level.Elevated to such a high level.Do you fancy it, run?I love

0:42:44 > 0:42:45watching it, so

0:42:45 > 0:42:45level.Do you fancy it, run?I love watching it, so dramatic, but not

0:42:45 > 0:42:51for me, thanks. An awful lot of skaters in different disciplines

0:42:51 > 0:42:56started off as skaters which is what Elise Christie did, she got fed up

0:42:56 > 0:43:01with the judging process, and she wanted to switch to a sport work she

0:43:01 > 0:43:06could control the outcome, she chose short track, we have seen you can't

0:43:06 > 0:43:11always control bad, she will be skating on the 1000 metre heats,

0:43:11 > 0:43:15taking to the ice in around 15 minutes for her heat, she's just got

0:43:15 > 0:43:20to survive nine laps of the track and through we hope, to the

0:43:20 > 0:43:21semifinals

0:43:21 > 0:43:22and through we hope, to the semifinals on Thursday. We will also

0:43:22 > 0:43:27have the keys of the men's 500 metres and the first-run of the

0:43:27 > 0:43:31women's bobsleigh, a British team in that, Mica McNeill and Mica Moore,

0:43:31 > 0:43:37help from a cramped funding project to get out there. Cars help from a

0:43:37 > 0:43:42crowdfunding project. We will concentrate on short track speed

0:43:42 > 0:43:45skating and women's Bobsleigh.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47skating and women's Bobsleigh.

0:43:56 > 0:44:03COMMENTATOR: they've gone done. Turmoil from Christie. I can't

0:44:03 > 0:44:08believe it. Christie has been penalised again.Elise Christie gets

0:44:08 > 0:44:15the chance to race for gold.A nation holds its breath.Christie

0:44:15 > 0:44:20tries to make it on the inside, she crashes out. Christie is out once

0:44:20 > 0:44:26again.Elise Christie to get into the Olympic final. Christie has

0:44:26 > 0:44:30crashed again on the final bend, yet again she ends up in a distraught

0:44:30 > 0:44:37heap on the floor.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42And I think it's fair to say these Winter Olympics have shown us all

0:44:42 > 0:44:46too clearly that with every glorious winner comes the despair of those

0:44:46 > 0:44:49who lose. Elise Christie has had more than her fair share of that

0:44:49 > 0:44:55feeling. Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland are going out to support

0:44:55 > 0:44:59her, and in the next 15 minutes we will see her back on that ice,

0:44:59 > 0:45:02because she knows that sport and indeed life doesn't always go to

0:45:02 > 0:45:07plan. It's how you deal with the setbacks that defines you, and Elise

0:45:07 > 0:45:12Christie is saying, fine, I can do this, and just wonderful to see her

0:45:12 > 0:45:17smiling, happy, laughing ahead of her heat on the bike, and there she

0:45:17 > 0:45:29is heading out into the prerace area. Do they call it a hotbox? The

0:45:29 > 0:45:39heat box.And maybe what has happened actually freeze Elise up

0:45:39 > 0:45:43mentally, because she has nothing to prove, just by being out there,

0:45:43 > 0:45:46being fit enough and strong enough to line up in her heat, she can

0:45:46 > 0:45:50think of anything else that happens is a bonus. She can be happy that

0:45:50 > 0:45:54she is just back out on the ice and it didn't end on Saturday for her.

0:45:54 > 0:46:00John, hello, good morning. What is your take on what you would like to

0:46:00 > 0:46:06see from Elise Christie and indeed Charlotte Gilmartin and Cap Thompson

0:46:06 > 0:46:12in these heats?I think it is about getting up to the front of the race,

0:46:12 > 0:46:18there was talk about how well Elise would get off the start with the

0:46:18 > 0:46:25ankle, but I want to see the girls get up there, it is quick from the

0:46:25 > 0:46:28start, they need to be as soon as possible and it will keep all of our

0:46:28 > 0:46:31nerves calmed. And Sarah Yu was then it is the push from the start that

0:46:31 > 0:46:36might be the most painful bit if she still has this heavily bruised and

0:46:36 > 0:46:41battered ankle. If the ankle is not 100%, potentially the impact of the

0:46:41 > 0:46:45run at the start might be uncomfortable for her commerce as I

0:46:45 > 0:46:50said, luckily it isn't the 500 metres that she is left with, it is

0:46:50 > 0:46:53the 1000, so I think to get out there and get up near the front

0:46:53 > 0:47:02would be a good move.Give us all a little bit, we will let you guys

0:47:02 > 0:47:05relax, they are firmly behind Elise, all the rest of the team just

0:47:05 > 0:47:12ribbing her luck could change, because her Olympic story so far has

0:47:12 > 0:47:20been one of terrible knock backs, frankly.

0:47:20 > 0:47:24Elise Christie came to Pyeongchang is the overall short track world

0:47:24 > 0:47:27champion, with high hopes of an Olympic medal, and after her triple

0:47:27 > 0:47:31disappointment in Sochi four years ago, it looked like that success

0:47:31 > 0:47:35might just come in her first event, the 500 metres.

0:47:35 > 0:47:40COMMENTATOR:Christie tried to make it on the inside, but she is out of

0:47:40 > 0:47:46it once again!I know it is short track and I am supposed to be

0:47:46 > 0:47:52prepared for this, but it still hurts, you know?Once again,

0:47:52 > 0:47:57heartbreak in the final, and sadly, the 1500 metres would be even worse.

0:47:57 > 0:48:03Christie in third place, and it is between her and Christie as they

0:48:03 > 0:48:08come round the final bend, and Christie has crashed again now in

0:48:08 > 0:48:14the semifinal.Fortunately, no bones were broken, but her right ankle

0:48:14 > 0:48:17still isn't 100%. With short track speed skating, the

0:48:17 > 0:48:21boot is moulded around the ankle, and it is a very delicate area,

0:48:21 > 0:48:24because of the pressures you are going through when going around the

0:48:24 > 0:48:27corner. So on the shimmering they will be looking at Cannes she handle

0:48:27 > 0:48:32the pressure which will be put on the ankle by the boot and also the

0:48:32 > 0:48:37pressure that has been created when she goes round the corner at 40 mph.

0:48:37 > 0:48:41Fortunately, Elise's injury has improved enough to allow her to

0:48:41 > 0:48:46return to training over the past 48 hours. She is strong and able to do

0:48:46 > 0:48:50the majority of the things we would be looking for in the 1000m, and I

0:48:50 > 0:48:55would say she is probably going to take to the ice at around 80 or 90%

0:48:55 > 0:48:58fitness.Elise has received thousands of messages of support

0:48:58 > 0:49:03from members of the public as well as from some of her heroes such as

0:49:03 > 0:49:06Dame Kelly Holmes and Jessica Ennis-Hill, all of which, if she is

0:49:06 > 0:49:13fit, could provide the boost she needs to get that elusive medal.I

0:49:13 > 0:49:19am just about to leave to go down to the rink to try to peak today. I

0:49:19 > 0:49:22stated this morning for the first time and it went quite well

0:49:22 > 0:49:24considering the circumstances, so I'm looking forward to seeing if I

0:49:24 > 0:49:28can get out there to race today. I want to thank everyone who has

0:49:28 > 0:49:32helped me get to this point and everyone from the spore background.

0:49:32 > 0:49:32helped me get to this point and everyone from the spore background.

0:49:32 > 0:49:37That look back on Elise Christie's story so far. What kind of

0:49:37 > 0:49:41personality is she, Sarah, you never really well. She is a huge

0:49:41 > 0:49:50personality. She is a bit kooky and are out there, she is lots of fun

0:49:50 > 0:49:54but she does know how to switch it on and be a professional, and she is

0:49:54 > 0:49:57very professional when it comes to her sport. And it clearly matters to

0:49:57 > 0:50:01her so much that other athletes are supporting her, people who know what

0:50:01 > 0:50:06it's like to be in this position. That is really lovely. Nobody really

0:50:06 > 0:50:10understands what it feels like unless they've been there

0:50:10 > 0:50:14themselves, so I think when it comes from people like that, I think it

0:50:14 > 0:50:21means an awful lot.John, as a skater, is she the best the Britain

0:50:21 > 0:50:25has ever produced?I would say so, yes. The results back that up. She

0:50:25 > 0:50:28just needs to put in that performance over the next few days

0:50:28 > 0:50:32that will reiterate that, and it is great to see all the team around

0:50:32 > 0:50:37her, Joe and Gemma, making her feel comfortable, just as we see that she

0:50:37 > 0:50:41can be as relaxed as possible. It is not about winning medals today, it

0:50:41 > 0:50:45is about qualifying and just doing enough. And full credit to the team,

0:50:45 > 0:50:48they have done a great job patching her up again. And that is what they

0:50:48 > 0:50:53are therefore, they are there to get her around. They have planned a

0:50:53 > 0:50:56different scenarios and well rehearsed and trained on their side

0:50:56 > 0:51:01of things as well, so that is their side of the job.And what is the

0:51:01 > 0:51:03latest on Charlotte Gilmartin, because she has had a couple of

0:51:03 > 0:51:08crashes.She is good, looking forward to the 1000m again, we talk

0:51:08 > 0:51:11about it being more hustle and bustle, and she likes that, she has

0:51:11 > 0:51:14a good race and hopefully she can get into the competition and build

0:51:14 > 0:51:22their confidence.Charlotte goes in heat eight,

0:51:25 > 0:51:29heat eight, Elise in heat three, because you get a sense of the

0:51:29 > 0:51:34hustle and bustle of the pacing of the 1000m. 500 metres you never get

0:51:34 > 0:51:43a chance to recover, 1500 metres seems to hurt a lot, 1000m is in the

0:51:43 > 0:51:47middle.Tactics in the race early on a very important, to get a good race

0:51:47 > 0:51:54from the start. And lane two for Elise, is that a good position for

0:51:54 > 0:51:59her?We want to see her in the lead with about six laps to go, it

0:51:59 > 0:52:02doesn't always play out like that, but she has strengthened a good race

0:52:02 > 0:52:06to start with, and you would want to make it as simple as possible.I

0:52:06 > 0:52:23suspect there will be a big crowd as well, because main

0:52:23 > 0:52:27well, because main -- Choi Minjeong is going in this heat, South Korea

0:52:27 > 0:52:31is the very heart of short track speed skating, they love it, and

0:52:31 > 0:52:35that is Choi Minjeong there. We will find out how she got on and join the

0:52:35 > 0:52:36third heat live.

0:52:39 > 0:52:52COMMENTATOR: Welcome to the gangland Ice -- gangland Ice Arena. We're

0:52:52 > 0:52:57just waiting to see whether there is any late Riparelli in this last

0:52:57 > 0:53:04heat.

0:53:04 > 0:53:08heat. And we are just watching now the highlights of the previous heat,

0:53:08 > 0:53:19this is Choi Minjeong, in the 1500 metres, and she looks comfortable

0:53:19 > 0:53:25and confident as you would expect from someone who has a gold medal in

0:53:25 > 0:53:38her pocket already. Here we go, the confirmation of the result, with

0:53:38 > 0:53:44Choi Minjeong going through. The skaters are out for the third heat.

0:53:44 > 0:53:50The Korean who moved to Kazakhstan a few years ago, Suzanne Schulting

0:53:50 > 0:54:00from the medal and

0:54:00 > 0:54:02from the medal and Netherlands, and Petra Jaszapati from Hungary who

0:54:02 > 0:54:07made the final of the 1500 metres, she is at the back of the moment,

0:54:07 > 0:54:16going wide on the outside. She is a new name in the sport, she has had a

0:54:16 > 0:54:29very good race so far.And the Ashley athlete from Russia still

0:54:29 > 0:54:37raising the speed here with six laps to go. Suzanne Schulting, a former

0:54:37 > 0:54:40world junior champion, leading the way at the moment. Kim is right

0:54:40 > 0:54:49behind her.

0:54:49 > 0:54:54behind her. Jaszapati just hanging at the back by now.Nobody seems to

0:54:54 > 0:55:02want to take this race on. Suzanne Schulting tried to shut the door on

0:55:02 > 0:55:12a Katharina Fritsch kova there. She is on the front, and Jaszapati is

0:55:12 > 0:55:19still on the back for hungry as they take the bell, Kim in the blue of

0:55:19 > 0:55:22Kazakhstan, Suzanne Schulting staying in the front, she will lead

0:55:22 > 0:55:28them home, and relatively unchallenged, she is ahead of

0:55:28 > 0:55:33Efremenkova, the Olympic Athlete from Russia, those two pretty

0:55:33 > 0:55:36comfortable qualifiers. And it shows the conditions of the ice, it is

0:55:36 > 0:55:44looking very good. Almost a second outside of the Olympic record, said

0:55:44 > 0:55:48to have skated sobbing like that in the second row shows the conditions

0:55:48 > 0:55:53are good. And next we will have the fourth heat, but let's just have a

0:55:53 > 0:55:58look at this one. This was a rare thing in short track speed skating,

0:55:58 > 0:56:03a race devoid of controversy. The athletes are bit more relaxed, they

0:56:03 > 0:56:10know what they need to do, and we have had in the last three short

0:56:10 > 0:56:13track days, 34 penalties from 12 different countries, just to give

0:56:13 > 0:56:17you some idea how many issues have been going on, and how many

0:56:17 > 0:56:22penalties have been awarded to all of these countries. And who would be

0:56:22 > 0:56:29a judge or head judge? So, that is confirmation of the results from the

0:56:29 > 0:56:34third heat, Suzanne Schulting and Efremenkova safely through, no video

0:56:34 > 0:56:37review, a pretty straightforward thing, and there they are marching

0:56:37 > 0:56:43away from the arena, and the quarterfinals are on Thursday.

0:56:43 > 0:56:46Kathryn Thomson is in this next one, the 22-year-old who has raised all

0:56:46 > 0:56:55three distances here. A quick look at the line-up for Kathryn Thomson,

0:56:55 > 0:56:59it is pretty tough, she has Jessica Kooreman of the United States who

0:56:59 > 0:57:09was fourth in this event in this event four years ago. Valerie

0:57:09 > 0:57:11Maltais, and Arianna Fontana who won the 500 metres earlier in

0:57:11 > 0:57:18competition here in Pyeongchang. Kathryn Thomson moves around the

0:57:18 > 0:57:21outside, she knows that Arianna Fontana will be challenging at the

0:57:21 > 0:57:24end. Using that speech he has got from the 500 metres, so really she

0:57:24 > 0:57:30knows that is the place where she needs to be. Valerie Maltais from

0:57:30 > 0:57:34Canada moves up the inside. And Kathryn Thomson knows she has to try

0:57:34 > 0:57:38to mix it because she is very much the outside of these four, but she

0:57:38 > 0:57:42is staying as near to the front she can, and she is still in the running

0:57:42 > 0:57:53here at the moment. Valerie Maltais leads, biding her time in third

0:57:53 > 0:57:59place, Arianna Fontana. And the Italian moves into first place.

0:57:59 > 0:58:03Arianna Fontana in blistering form goes to the front, two laps to go

0:58:03 > 0:58:09over the line, with Valerie Maltais in second place, Kooreman in third,

0:58:09 > 0:58:15and Kathryn Thomson losing place with the others. This is going to

0:58:15 > 0:58:18form, Kooreman is trying to mix it to see if she can upset the odds,

0:58:18 > 0:58:26she is going to try to get away on the inside. And Maltais stays on her

0:58:26 > 0:58:30feet, Kooreman has but has to settle for third, and in fourth Kathryn

0:58:30 > 0:58:34Thomson of Great Britain. That was a superb piece of skating by Arianna

0:58:34 > 0:58:41Fontana. Valerie Maltais will have to wait and see what the official

0:58:41 > 0:58:44result is. I wouldn't have thought that the American had right of way,

0:58:44 > 0:58:50so to speak, so the referees are in fact going over to the replay, and

0:58:50 > 0:58:56we will have to wait and see what their final decision is, that you

0:58:56 > 0:59:00can see the Italian Arianna Fontana on the inside track moving through

0:59:00 > 0:59:04very comfortably, and this is the discussion really between the

0:59:04 > 0:59:10Canadian and the American, who was really right, and she is just moving

0:59:10 > 0:59:18up the inside, and Kooreman of the United States clearly not pass the

0:59:18 > 0:59:24Canadian, and I don't think they will be any court on that.Arianna

0:59:24 > 0:59:29Fontana is so consistent, six Olympic medals, but now on the track

0:59:29 > 0:59:33as Kathryn Thomson departs the Olympic Games, her first Olympics,

0:59:33 > 0:59:38having had the experience of all the events, Elise Christie, the world

0:59:38 > 0:59:42champion, is coming up onto the track next. That is confirmation of

0:59:42 > 0:59:48the results of the fourth heat. No video review required. There is

0:59:48 > 0:59:53Elise Christie, clearly not fully fit with that ankle damage. Picked

0:59:53 > 0:59:57up in the crash in the semifinal of the 1500 metres the other day. But

0:59:57 > 1:00:03keen to have a go here. If she can just get through this heat, she will

1:00:03 > 1:00:07have another couple of days to recover. Lara Van Ruijven is ranked

1:00:07 > 1:00:1212th in the world, Andrea Kessler of Hungary, and Magdalena Warakomska

1:00:12 > 1:00:13from Poland.

1:00:24 > 1:00:28And away they go, Christie goes down before they reach the very first

1:00:28 > 1:00:34corner. Her races over before it started, she is still on the ground

1:00:34 > 1:00:42as the race continues, the officials go to check on her, the other

1:00:42 > 1:00:46athletes are coming to a halt, I think we will be restarting the

1:00:46 > 1:00:53race. But whether Elise Christie will be able to restart the race, we

1:00:53 > 1:01:00cannot be sure. Her team-mate Charlotte or Martin will be in heat

1:01:00 > 1:01:07number eight, here it is again.I think she put her toe on the right

1:01:07 > 1:01:14skate into the ice, she caught the blades of Kessler. No words for

1:01:14 > 1:01:20this. She clips the back of the blade of Kessler as she goes on the

1:01:20 > 1:01:26bend, they are allowed to restart. Now the question is, do they feel

1:01:26 > 1:01:33that the fall, I think it's over. APPLAUSE

1:01:33 > 1:01:39I think the Olympic Games is finally over for Elise Christie. She is

1:01:39 > 1:01:44skating over to the side of the track.I don't think it is, they are

1:01:44 > 1:01:48checking the blades, they are allowed to do this, they are

1:01:48 > 1:01:53repairing the eyes. Just checking the blades. When I had my problem in

1:01:53 > 1:01:58Lillehammer I had to leave the ice, here they are allowed to check the

1:01:58 > 1:02:05blades to make sure everything is OK.She is going to go again. Elise

1:02:05 > 1:02:09Christie is not finished. I wondered before the camera was on her, she

1:02:09 > 1:02:15spoke to one of the officials, who pointed to where the exit was. The

1:02:15 > 1:02:19crowd started applauding, I think they thought it was over, Elise

1:02:19 > 1:02:31Christie will take to the start again. Heat five.

1:02:37 > 1:02:44Away they go. Christie at the back of the field, at least she has

1:02:44 > 1:02:48avoided trouble, she can get up to speed, I think the start was going

1:02:48 > 1:02:52to be the hardest.Absolutely, particularly after the fall, she

1:02:52 > 1:02:58can't put pressure on it, now it's a question, nine laps, skaters won and

1:02:58 > 1:03:02two will go through, we are hoping and praying for her to qualify.Six

1:03:02 > 1:03:11and a half laps to go, Van Ruijven from the Netherlands in front,

1:03:11 > 1:03:13Kessler from Hungary second. Elise Christie should not have a problem

1:03:13 > 1:03:18getting through. The draw, pretty kind to her, relatively speaking,

1:03:18 > 1:03:24can she get up to full speed, can she find a way through to finish in

1:03:24 > 1:03:32the first two?The last lap time, nine points 75, she moves through

1:03:32 > 1:03:36into third place, one and two to qualify.Christie ready to make a

1:03:36 > 1:03:41challenge, three laps to go, Van Ruijven comes round, Christie has a

1:03:41 > 1:03:46look at the inside, stays on her feet, she sees a little gap, forced

1:03:46 > 1:03:50out why, staying third, Van Ruijven taking around with three laps to go,

1:03:50 > 1:03:57Christie taking a long way around, goes into the back of her opponent,

1:03:57 > 1:04:03forcing her way into second place. A battle, Van Ruijven from the

1:04:03 > 1:04:06Netherlands leading but have they love to go, Christie in position to

1:04:06 > 1:04:10qualify, Van Ruijven first over the line, risky in second, Kessler

1:04:10 > 1:04:17forth. At the second attempt, the race was completed. She picks

1:04:17 > 1:04:22herself up from the ice, literally, to have a second goal and this time,

1:04:22 > 1:04:27she manages to get the job done, she is through the heat and Elise

1:04:27 > 1:04:32Christie, the world champion, still in the women's 1000 metres, she

1:04:32 > 1:04:38limped away from the start, doing this hardware. She certainly is,

1:04:38 > 1:04:44squeezing through. Wouldn't be surprised if Kessler gets a penalty

1:04:44 > 1:04:48here, she of course was the skater on the outside of Christie, Visteon

1:04:48 > 1:04:53was going down again, manages to stay up, the River Reeves looking at

1:04:53 > 1:05:00the video replay to find out whether or not Kessler, in my opinion

1:05:00 > 1:05:02blocked on Christie but of course Christie finished in a second

1:05:02 > 1:05:08qualifying position, she will go through to the quarterfinal on

1:05:08 > 1:05:12Thursday.Quite a physical race as she is carried from the arena. At

1:05:12 > 1:05:19least not on a stretcher. Running repairs for Elise Christie. We await

1:05:19 > 1:05:24the judges verdict on the race. Was a physical race that she was

1:05:24 > 1:05:28involved in and involved in the physicality.Absolutely, showing the

1:05:28 > 1:05:33courage this young lady has, sheer determination, it would have been

1:05:33 > 1:05:38quite easy to turn round and say I am going to stop, I am injured, but

1:05:38 > 1:05:43there was another incident.Kessler, and then there was another one.

1:05:43 > 1:05:49Kessler comes in onto Christie. Doesn't Christie get involved...A

1:05:49 > 1:05:53little bit as well. There are two issues, you are not allowed, if

1:05:53 > 1:05:58someone comes up the inside, you are not allowed to change lanes, block

1:05:58 > 1:06:08the skater coming up the inside. Looking anxiously at the scoreboard.

1:06:08 > 1:06:17High above the rink. The review is taking place but I'm hoping it's

1:06:17 > 1:06:23coming close to reaching a conclusion now. Elise Christie has

1:06:23 > 1:06:28left the scene of the race. But the result has not been confirmed. As of

1:06:28 > 1:06:41yet.The referee has gone across. Yellow card Elise Christie. That is

1:06:41 > 1:06:46really amazing. I cannot believe they have awarded her a yellow card.

1:06:46 > 1:06:51That really puts the tin hat on her Olympic Games. It's hard to think

1:06:51 > 1:06:58how it could have got any worse. But it just has. Elise Christie is out

1:06:58 > 1:07:02of the Olympic Games. She finished the race in second place, came over

1:07:02 > 1:07:07the line in a qualifying position, she's been given a yellow card, that

1:07:07 > 1:07:11means she has been thrown out of the competition.Of the 1000 metres.

1:07:11 > 1:07:19Over for her. The final event. That's it. We'll have to reflect on

1:07:19 > 1:07:28that shortly. Meanwhile the racing continues. Heat number six.

1:07:32 > 1:07:38The Netherlands in fourth place, the athlete in red from China, going to

1:07:38 > 1:07:43the front, the Olympic silver medallist. Six laps to go.I'm still

1:07:43 > 1:07:52in shock about the yellow card. For Liz Christie. There is a massive

1:07:52 > 1:08:02crash and there is only one skater still up. Seidel up as well. The

1:08:02 > 1:08:07skaters are all over the place. At the front of the race, the Chinese

1:08:07 > 1:08:12athlete the only one who avoided the crash. She has three to go, the

1:08:12 > 1:08:17others scampering around behind her. I'm not sure of what happened, I

1:08:17 > 1:08:23think Seidel was going on the inside of the bed, collided, both skaters

1:08:23 > 1:08:28went down, taking them both down, the skater from Russia went down as

1:08:28 > 1:08:37well with one and a half laps to go. A lap to go.The Chinese skater will

1:08:37 > 1:08:42glide home effortlessly in first place. She wins the heat, the others

1:08:42 > 1:08:48are still racing and the Olympic Athlete from Russia, I think will

1:08:48 > 1:08:56take second. Ahead of the Netherlands. But I think certainly

1:08:56 > 1:09:00the Olympic Athlete from Russia hurting as she crossed the line,

1:09:00 > 1:09:06high-speed, spectacular speed for the three of them.We are now up to

1:09:06 > 1:09:1236 penalties in four days, a yellow card. Can you explain what that

1:09:12 > 1:09:16yellow card means, in football if you get a yellow lid means you get a

1:09:16 > 1:09:22warning but you can carry on as before. Cars yellow card. Tell us

1:09:22 > 1:09:26exciting for the means and why they have given her.It means, short

1:09:26 > 1:09:30track speed skating there is a Labour on Bing and barging, some of

1:09:30 > 1:09:35that intentional, some of it not, when a skater is given a yellow card

1:09:35 > 1:09:40they are taken out of the petition, 1000 metres in this instance. That

1:09:40 > 1:09:43is because the referee felt it was intentional as opposed to

1:09:43 > 1:09:52accidental.What was intentional?As I already said, the camera decision

1:09:52 > 1:09:55we are seeing here are not the camera positions that the referees

1:09:55 > 1:10:01have available to them. It this makes it very difficult, they are

1:10:01 > 1:10:07seeing stuff from different camera angles van der Voort we are seeing.

1:10:07 > 1:10:14-- than what we are seeing. It happened so quickly we have no time

1:10:14 > 1:10:17to reflect but I am sure Clare Balding will be able to do that in

1:10:17 > 1:10:21the studio when the seats have finished. Two more heat is to come,

1:10:21 > 1:10:27we are waiting for the verdict from heat six, that is quite the skaters

1:10:27 > 1:10:32are standing, not disappearing to the dressing room. Just to clarify,

1:10:32 > 1:10:38a yellow card means you are thrown out of that distance. Absolutely. A

1:10:38 > 1:10:41red card would mean you are thrown out of all the competition.Any

1:10:41 > 1:10:51distance. Absolutely. We are seeing, the Chinese skater moves, quite

1:10:51 > 1:10:56comfortably, Seidel of Germany moves into the front, there is no issue

1:10:56 > 1:11:02there. I think the issue really happens a lot later in the race.

1:11:02 > 1:11:03This is after the initial fall.

1:11:10 > 1:11:17We are not really seeing the footage, what is really happening.

1:11:17 > 1:11:24Both girls waiting for the official result from the referee. It's almost

1:11:24 > 1:11:28like the figure skating, the deliberation zone as I would call

1:11:28 > 1:11:37it.The scowling stops when it does not go your way. Kirchhoff was the

1:11:37 > 1:11:39skater who finished in the silver medal position and profited from the

1:11:39 > 1:11:46crash that Elise Christie had in the first race, the 500 metre final.

1:11:46 > 1:11:49There may be two penalties, two different incidents, two different

1:11:49 > 1:11:56labs.When we get to a final in short track speed skating, if enough

1:11:56 > 1:12:00of them I disciplined you can have a medal going to someone in the B

1:12:00 > 1:12:06final.

1:12:06 > 1:12:18final.Two penalties.Do you have any complaints with that decision?

1:12:18 > 1:12:22This is an issue we have been discussing. Rob Wotton we can see, I

1:12:22 > 1:12:28think it was a relatively fair call. -- from what we can see. Both cost

1:12:28 > 1:12:41infringement. Here is heat number seven.

1:12:45 > 1:12:52An Olympic relay gold medallist from Sochi, three-time World Championship

1:12:52 > 1:12:57medallist, won an Olympic bronze in Vancouver. The penultimate heat in

1:12:57 > 1:13:06the women's 1000 metres.Typical tactics by the Canadians.

1:13:07 > 1:13:13tactics by the Canadians. Kim from Korea takes the lead.

1:13:15 > 1:13:20Korea takes the lead. St Gelais and Kim swapping the lead.

1:13:25 > 1:13:30Making her way into the Olympic team, other than John Henry Kruger,

1:13:30 > 1:13:32on the blades that the United States, it's not been a great

1:13:32 > 1:13:38Olympics. St Gelais looking comfortable, winning three silver

1:13:38 > 1:13:40medals at the World Championships, including one in the housing

1:13:40 > 1:13:46bidders. St Gelais overtaken on the outside I Kim from Korea. The gap

1:13:46 > 1:13:55starts to open.Superb piece of overtaking on the outside. St Gelais

1:13:55 > 1:14:02stretching back to him from Korea in the lead.A lap to go. Really spread

1:14:02 > 1:14:10out around the track, we can clearly see who is going to be one and two.

1:14:10 > 1:14:14Kim and St Gelais. The Japanese skater in third. The United States

1:14:14 > 1:14:20bringing up the rear.A much more straightforward race. I don't think

1:14:20 > 1:14:27there will be any issues there, no video replay necessary. We are

1:14:27 > 1:14:31looking at the referees, this American referee Alan Grisham is

1:14:31 > 1:14:37going over to the video replay so we will have to wait for this official

1:14:37 > 1:14:43result, I think that's the incident, just tries to move up the inside,

1:14:43 > 1:14:47normally speaking, if you do get advanced to the next round you have

1:14:47 > 1:14:52to be in a qualifying position, either one or two, even if there is

1:14:52 > 1:14:56a penalty awarded she was not in a qualifying position. Therefore it

1:14:56 > 1:15:01just means that skater gets a penalty. Those two crossed the line,

1:15:01 > 1:15:08clearly better than the other two. One more heat to come, it features

1:15:08 > 1:15:14Charlotte Gilmartin from Great Britain. 27 who crashed out of both

1:15:14 > 1:15:19her events so far. Best result in the thousand metres in the World Cup

1:15:19 > 1:15:23competition this winter was seventh in the Netherlands. A four time

1:15:23 > 1:15:30European Championship medallist. Kim leaves the arena, we have a last

1:15:30 > 1:15:38look at this race. Kim and St Gelais were the first two.Clearly no

1:15:38 > 1:15:42problems. Really about whether there should be a penalty. Awarded to the

1:15:42 > 1:15:47American.

1:15:50 > 1:15:54There is a penalty, and it is just being announced now. And the

1:15:54 > 1:16:04American gets the penalty, and Samir Rachel

1:16:04 > 1:16:09Rachel remains, but she wasn't in a position to potentially qualify

1:16:09 > 1:16:14anyway. Let's get on with the last final. Kim Boutin has a medal

1:16:14 > 1:16:19already. Charlotte Gilmartin therefore Great Britain. Hitomi

1:16:19 > 1:16:30Saito from Japan, bronze medal last year, and CMascitto from Italy is

1:16:30 > 1:16:35straight down already, and she wasn't involved with anybody else,

1:16:35 > 1:16:40so they will not restart the race. It was like what happened to Elise

1:16:40 > 1:16:46Christie, so therefore the starter will not restart the race.

1:16:46 > 1:16:53So you will say that Kim Boutin is the most likely to win this race,

1:16:53 > 1:16:57but Charlotte Gilmartin needs to stamp authority on to this. The

1:16:57 > 1:17:00British camp are extremely down after what happened to Elise

1:17:00 > 1:17:03Christie, but it is important now that Charlotte Gilmartin tucks into

1:17:03 > 1:17:08that second place and maintains her position.Five to go, Charlotte

1:17:08 > 1:17:13Gilmartin in second place behind Kim Boutin of Canada. It is Hitomi Saito

1:17:13 > 1:17:17and Cynthia Mascitto she needs to keep behind her now. Kim Boutin has

1:17:17 > 1:17:21got the speed she needs to come out on top in virtually every scenario

1:17:21 > 1:17:28here.She makes it look so easy, Kim Boutin, even in the curve, two arms

1:17:28 > 1:17:32on her back. It is important that Charlotte really hangs onto the back

1:17:32 > 1:17:36of her tail now. This will be a big race for second place, Charlotte

1:17:36 > 1:17:40Gilmartin being put under pressure from Hitomi Saito of Japan. She is

1:17:40 > 1:17:46in a fight now to qualify, one lap to go. Kim Boutin leads the way, and

1:17:46 > 1:17:50it is Hitomi Saito in second place, Charlotte Gilmartin losing a bit of

1:17:50 > 1:17:54ground now. It doesn't look like she will be able to close the gap, she

1:17:54 > 1:18:00can't, and Kim Boutin wins that heat, as one would expect. It went

1:18:00 > 1:18:07to form, but Hitomi Saito, ranked 23 in the world at this distance in the

1:18:07 > 1:18:11end just had too much speed for Charlotte Gilmartin, who goes out of

1:18:11 > 1:18:17the competition at the first hurdle. We can see that for by the Italian,

1:18:17 > 1:18:22she jumps back up, of course she fell on her own, she is only skating

1:18:22 > 1:18:27the 1000m, she didn't take part in the 500 or the 1500, so I guess the

1:18:27 > 1:18:31nerves got the better of her, and Charlotte Gilmartin they're just

1:18:31 > 1:18:36being taken over by the Japanese. At her best, Charlotte Gilmartin has

1:18:36 > 1:18:41the ability to get through a heat like that?Absolutely.But it wasn't

1:18:41 > 1:18:48to be, and Kim Boutin looking pretty confident with a couple of medals in

1:18:48 > 1:18:53her pocket already. And here's the confirmation pretty quickly, Kim

1:18:53 > 1:18:57Boutin and Hitomi Saito going three, Charlotte Gilmartin in third place,

1:18:57 > 1:19:00so Kathryn Thomson, Charlotte Gilmartin and Elise Christie all

1:19:00 > 1:19:11failing to make it through from the heats of the women's 1000m.

1:19:14 > 1:19:18So, let's take a quick look now, qualification of the

1:19:18 > 1:19:25quarterfinalist. Suzanne Schulting, a medallist

1:19:25 > 1:19:29a medallist last year, Efremenkova who got up off the floor to qualify,

1:19:29 > 1:19:34and the rest of those who have made it through, including Yara Van

1:19:34 > 1:19:39Kerkhof and Kim Boutin.

1:19:40 > 1:19:47Kerkhof and Kim Boutin. Shim Sukhee won a medal in Sochi four years ago.

1:19:47 > 1:19:50Those quarterfinals will be on Thursday.

1:19:50 > 1:19:56CLARE BALDING: And just huge sadness that Elise Christie won't be among

1:19:56 > 1:19:58them, and nor will Charlotte Gilmartin and nor will Kathryn

1:19:58 > 1:20:01Thomson, but for Elise Christie to be brave enough to get back out

1:20:01 > 1:20:05there on the ice, having a fall on the first start of her heat, still

1:20:05 > 1:20:09getting up and going out again, finishing second and then to get

1:20:09 > 1:20:16disqualified, that just seems pain beyond... It's not fair, John.That

1:20:16 > 1:20:20is what sport is, and that is why we keep wanting to watch it, because we

1:20:20 > 1:20:24just don't know what is going to happen. She gave it a good go today,

1:20:24 > 1:20:28and what happened on the start is another twist in the tale, but she

1:20:28 > 1:20:31gave it her best shot and that is all we can ask for.She clearly

1:20:31 > 1:20:36wasn't feeling. If, because she went for it, on this first start, to try

1:20:36 > 1:20:41and get out in front.Yes, she did, I thought she would skate off and

1:20:41 > 1:20:43try and do something later, but she caught the skate of the other girl

1:20:43 > 1:20:49and tripped, and she looked a little bit shaken, probably, from that

1:20:49 > 1:20:53fall, because she wouldn't have been expecting that to happen. And to get

1:20:53 > 1:20:57back up and go again, it probably rocked her confidence a little bit.

1:20:57 > 1:21:01I think going into that race before that she would have been feeling

1:21:01 > 1:21:05quite happy that she was in a good place, and the medical team had done

1:21:05 > 1:21:09a great job and cleared her to race, but I think then that would have

1:21:09 > 1:21:14shook up, and then when we go on to see the actual race. She takes a

1:21:14 > 1:21:18different tactic. You can see the confidence is not there. If she was

1:21:18 > 1:21:22going to sit in the race, you would want to see her go around the

1:21:22 > 1:21:24outside in keep it as clear as possible, because we talked about

1:21:24 > 1:21:28trying to get to the front and after that start that wasn't going to

1:21:28 > 1:21:31happen but then she starts making smaller inside moves. So on the

1:21:31 > 1:21:35restart, you can see that she deliberately going for a slow start,

1:21:35 > 1:21:42to build up the pace gradually, not going to get involved in the

1:21:42 > 1:21:44argy-bargy, but unfortunately makes the decision to go around the inside

1:21:44 > 1:21:46to overtake rather than sweeping round the outside, and therefore

1:21:46 > 1:21:51gets into trouble twice. And that is where she has ended up getting a

1:21:51 > 1:21:56yellow card, because although mentioned by Will you do get a card

1:21:56 > 1:21:59or dangerous skating, but I don't think that was this one, it was the

1:21:59 > 1:22:04fact that she picked up two penalties in two different

1:22:04 > 1:22:08incidents, and I think that amounted to the yellow card. She looks

1:22:08 > 1:22:10confident the back, and looks like she is winding up the Yuchen see

1:22:10 > 1:22:20where she is not as confident as she would be in a race like this, she is

1:22:20 > 1:22:20taking

1:22:20 > 1:22:22taking up the inside options and moving up the track slowly. It is

1:22:22 > 1:22:24shorter to go on the side but more risky?Definitely. Around the

1:22:24 > 1:22:28outside you have more space but you do need the strength, and that is

1:22:28 > 1:22:32where not having as much confidence probably meant that she went the

1:22:32 > 1:22:39easier route.So that undertake was fine?Yes, and you wonder shisha

1:22:39 > 1:22:42granny tax eye but she gets caught in an incident there, and I think

1:22:42 > 1:22:46she does make quite good speed coming out of the corner to make the

1:22:46 > 1:22:50overtake, but obviously the Hungarian girl shuts the door on

1:22:50 > 1:22:54her.And had their just been that one incident, it might have been all

1:22:54 > 1:22:57right.By the sounds of it she would have got a penalty for that, and

1:22:57 > 1:23:01then she gets another penalty here when Chi double pushes against the

1:23:01 > 1:23:05Polish girl, and then that leads to a double penalty which further

1:23:05 > 1:23:14yellow card.So she hasn't done anything dangerous? It is a double

1:23:14 > 1:23:17infringement, so effectively in football it would be two yellow

1:23:17 > 1:23:21cards and therefore the red

1:23:21 > 1:23:21football it would be two yellow cards and therefore the red? Oh,

1:23:21 > 1:23:26dear.And I think they are she can't carry on her speed, obviously the

1:23:26 > 1:23:30girl that is in front, the Dutch girl, hasn't gone quick enough to

1:23:30 > 1:23:37open that gap for Elise to slot into, so then Andrea Kessler from

1:23:37 > 1:23:43Hungary is able to shut the door. She has almost come across the track

1:23:43 > 1:23:48too much.Nicky Gooch, the coach, carrying her off to protect as much

1:23:48 > 1:23:55as possible. In your opinion, John, is the disqualification just?Yes.

1:23:55 > 1:23:59It is a racing incident, and we talk about trying to make it as clear as

1:23:59 > 1:24:01possible, because if you don't you come into the hand of the referee,

1:24:01 > 1:24:06and they have a chance to watch the video back and that didn't had two

1:24:06 > 1:24:10penalties.We are going live back to Pyeongchang to talk to Elise

1:24:10 > 1:24:11Christie.

1:24:14 > 1:24:18Just tell us what is going through your mind right now.To be honest,

1:24:18 > 1:24:26not much. A few days ago, I didn't think I would be getting on the ice.

1:24:26 > 1:24:32I did everything I could to turn this around, I had ligament damage

1:24:32 > 1:24:35in my ankle, and putting a skate on with that is not the comfiest thing

1:24:35 > 1:24:42in the world. And we did everything we could to turn this around, and it

1:24:42 > 1:24:46just wasn't meant to be.If it was any other competition, would you

1:24:46 > 1:24:50have been on that start line today? No, I would've been off the ice for

1:24:50 > 1:24:55five or six weeks. I would have been in rehab. I wouldn't have got on if

1:24:55 > 1:24:58it was the World Championships, and that wouldn't have been my choice, I

1:24:58 > 1:25:01would have been told I wasn't getting on. The only reason they

1:25:01 > 1:25:05gave me the choice is because it was the Olympics. The worst that could

1:25:05 > 1:25:10happen is

1:25:10 > 1:25:14happen is that I fell off the start, but to me that didn't matter. I

1:25:14 > 1:25:19trained all my life this, it was everything to me, and... It's done.

1:25:19 > 1:25:24I think everyone watching will think that you've got a hell of a lot of

1:25:24 > 1:25:35guts.Thanks. I don't know. I just felt like I owe it to Britain, you

1:25:35 > 1:25:41know? I can put my hands are right now and say I don't know why I have

1:25:41 > 1:25:46got the yellow card. When I watched the race, I was kicked on the start

1:25:46 > 1:25:50and fell over, I have never had a yellow card in my life, never mind

1:25:50 > 1:25:57penalties, I barely get penalties. I went to the inside, and on the

1:25:57 > 1:26:01video, I am past the girl, so I have no idea. The only thing I can think

1:26:01 > 1:26:04of is possibly the referee doesn't think it's safer meter race with my

1:26:04 > 1:26:08ankle wages, because he was in courage in me to get off the ice

1:26:08 > 1:26:13after the fall at the start, and if that is it, then fair enough, I can

1:26:13 > 1:26:16see why he might not want me to race like that, because it might not be

1:26:16 > 1:26:24the safest. We know how much work you put in, and you're talking about

1:26:24 > 1:26:27putting short track out there, I think you have done that, you are

1:26:27 > 1:26:33the world champion. How do you some up these games? Because I think it's

1:26:33 > 1:26:41fair to say that it hasn't gone very well. You'll have to ask me

1:26:41 > 1:26:50tomorrow, I think. Right now I'm a bit shell-shocked. I worked hard to

1:26:50 > 1:26:54come back from this injury, most people wouldn't have skated with my

1:26:54 > 1:26:58ankle the way it was, I can barely bend my knee. The only thing I can

1:26:58 > 1:27:02say is I can promise Britain that I will fight back from this and I will

1:27:02 > 1:27:09come back for Beijing, and hopefully I can do Britain proud of then.Back

1:27:09 > 1:27:12to Beijing, so I know that after the last time, you felt like you

1:27:12 > 1:27:17couldn't go on, but this time you don't feel that? It's different this

1:27:17 > 1:27:23time, you can go to Beijing?Yes, I have so much belief in the programme

1:27:23 > 1:27:29and myself, none of that was my physical capability. You know, it

1:27:29 > 1:27:38was just short track. What else can I say? Everyone has been such a

1:27:38 > 1:27:42massive support to me, Team GB, to turn this around. Everyone at home,

1:27:42 > 1:27:47most of the people, anyway, I can't believe how supportive they have

1:27:47 > 1:27:53been, and I definitely think I can come back and medal in Beijing, it

1:27:53 > 1:27:58is frustrating having to wait four years. It wasn't to be this time.

1:27:58 > 1:28:03Listen, despite what has happened, we are all immensely proud of you,

1:28:03 > 1:28:07and you are the world champion, and lots of people come to the Olympics

1:28:07 > 1:28:10and don't win medals, so we're really proud you had the guts to get

1:28:10 > 1:28:13out on that start line, and we are looking forward to seeing you back

1:28:13 > 1:28:17in Beijing.Thank you, and I would like to thank all the kids that have

1:28:17 > 1:28:23sent me messages. I really appreciate it, the kids that have

1:28:23 > 1:28:26sent messages saying they are inspired by me, they have no idea

1:28:26 > 1:28:31what that means to me, but it is amazing that five-year-olds and

1:28:31 > 1:28:34seven-year-olds can find me inspiring, that brings tears to my

1:28:34 > 1:28:38eyes, you know?Thanks very much. Thanks.

1:28:41 > 1:28:44Elise Christie admitting she is still shell-shocked, doesn't

1:28:44 > 1:28:47understand why she got the yellow card, but confirming this is not the

1:28:47 > 1:28:51end of her Olympic challenge, she will be back in four years' time.

1:28:51 > 1:28:55She will be 31 by then, still determined to win a first Olympic

1:28:55 > 1:29:01medal, but her Olympics for this year, for 2018, is over. Sarah, what

1:29:01 > 1:29:04did you make of what she said there, and of what has happened to her

1:29:04 > 1:29:09today?I think it was a really nice and honest interview from her, and I

1:29:09 > 1:29:14think she probably is a little bit shell-shocked, and she needs to let

1:29:14 > 1:29:18things sink in. And book a holiday! Take a little bit of time off. She

1:29:18 > 1:29:22has four years until the next games, and lots to do in between them, but

1:29:22 > 1:29:26I think maybe a bit of downtime. She mentioned that the referee was

1:29:26 > 1:29:30having words with her after the first false start, after she fell on

1:29:30 > 1:29:35the first start for her heat, and is that the referee there with the

1:29:35 > 1:29:40headphones?That would have been one of the referees, yes.And do you

1:29:40 > 1:29:45think he's checking she's all right? Would think he's saying.He would

1:29:45 > 1:29:48have been just checking, the duty of care being the head referee for the

1:29:48 > 1:29:52girls, he would've come over and checked if she was OK, and

1:29:52 > 1:29:55obviously, would have been asking her how she is doing, to find out

1:29:55 > 1:30:01whether she is ready to go again. Is there any right of appeal? No. In

1:30:01 > 1:30:09this instance, no. They have checked the video numerous times, we don't

1:30:09 > 1:30:13see the same footage as they get to see, the referees will see it

1:30:13 > 1:30:16overhead and in front and down the straight, so we don't get to see

1:30:16 > 1:30:20that footage may be until after the event, but yes, there is no right of

1:30:20 > 1:30:25appeal here.

1:30:25 > 1:30:29Sarah, she was saying she doesn't understand why she got the

1:30:29 > 1:30:34infringement, there were undertakes that were not illegal, not worthy of

1:30:34 > 1:30:37a penalty. She has not had the chance to have a look at the video,

1:30:37 > 1:30:42how you feel when you get off, all the adrenaline, what happens during

1:30:42 > 1:30:46the race, it flashes past you very quickly, she might feel differently

1:30:46 > 1:30:50when she looks at the video replay and she has gone and analysed it.I

1:30:50 > 1:30:58think she has a point with racing against Kessler, the Hungarian girl,

1:30:58 > 1:31:03she probably may feel a bit harsh on that because she got alongside her

1:31:03 > 1:31:07and she tried to make space but unfortunately it was not there. With

1:31:07 > 1:31:12the Polish girl, I would say that was a clear penalty.I think when

1:31:12 > 1:31:16your intentions are good and you are not intending to cause trouble or

1:31:16 > 1:31:19cause a penalty, it doesn't feel there, because that's not what you

1:31:19 > 1:31:26are trying to do.Do you think she would have raced differently, a

1:31:26 > 1:31:30fully fit Elise Christie, despite, if the ankle was and still hurting,

1:31:30 > 1:31:33a belief that Elise Christie would have gone round the outside and gone

1:31:33 > 1:31:38I'm better than you lot.Without a doubt, who she was racing against,

1:31:38 > 1:31:42she would have sat at the back and gone round the outside is not gone

1:31:42 > 1:31:46to the front at the start and dominated. She can clearly see where

1:31:46 > 1:31:49she is out, she was obviously disappointed in that interview but

1:31:49 > 1:31:53she realises maybe today she was not at full fitness and there's nothing

1:31:53 > 1:31:59else you can do. She gave it her best shot, today wasn't meant to be,

1:31:59 > 1:32:04she probably realised that with the injury.Desperately disappointing

1:32:04 > 1:32:07for British fans, desperately sad for Elise Christie but so impressive

1:32:07 > 1:32:13she can come out and say after that I am going again, going to try for

1:32:13 > 1:32:17another Olympics. Let's go out to Pyeongchang and speak to Wilf

1:32:17 > 1:32:26O'Reilly, how do you sum up today? Basically, immense courage that she

1:32:26 > 1:32:31has shown to get on the ice, clash blades with the Hungarian Kessler,

1:32:31 > 1:32:36to go back to the start of the 1000 metres, 20-30 metres off the pace

1:32:36 > 1:32:41and close the gap in a qualifying position and what I believe, I

1:32:41 > 1:32:45happened to seeing the actual replay that the video referee sees but what

1:32:45 > 1:32:49I understand is there are two issues that have happened during the course

1:32:49 > 1:32:54of the race and because one was a penalty and the other was a penalty,

1:32:54 > 1:32:58I actually don't feel it was a penalty at all but I haven't seen

1:32:58 > 1:33:02the video footage to confirm that. Basically two penalties means you

1:33:02 > 1:33:08get a yellow card which is a warning for dangerous skating.Do you feel

1:33:08 > 1:33:12at all because Elise Christie is as high-profile as she is, because she

1:33:12 > 1:33:15had the issues are ready, aren't the judges watching her more closely

1:33:15 > 1:33:22than anyone else?If you are one of the favourites you are always being

1:33:22 > 1:33:26watched a lot more closely than any other skaters, generally in my

1:33:26 > 1:33:31opinion what happens, a lot of the well-known names skaters are quite

1:33:31 > 1:33:35often given, sort of, the chance, if you like, the benefit of the doubt

1:33:35 > 1:33:38and are allowed to go through but clearly the referees are under such

1:33:38 > 1:33:43pressure, they are basically saying, based on the footage what they see,

1:33:43 > 1:33:50they are the people, Babel be giving penalties to.To be fair, they have

1:33:50 > 1:33:53been pretty brave, they took choice the home favourite out of the medal

1:33:53 > 1:33:57winning position in the 500, it's not like they are making unpopular

1:33:57 > 1:34:02decisions for everybody. Elise Christie mentioned she thought the

1:34:02 > 1:34:06referee might have given her a yellow card because they perhaps

1:34:06 > 1:34:09might have thought it wasn't safe for her to race but they can't do

1:34:09 > 1:34:13that, can they?I wouldn't think so, if he felt that wasn't safe for her

1:34:13 > 1:34:17to start and he should never have allowed her to start the race, as it

1:34:17 > 1:34:24were. I don't really know, there is something that we are going to

1:34:24 > 1:34:26Seville for the ISU conference in June and the rules and regulations

1:34:26 > 1:34:30will be voted upon and it is something I will be putting forward

1:34:30 > 1:34:36to try and emphasise to the rest of the world if somebody is given a

1:34:36 > 1:34:41penalty, why? This is a big load to British Short track speed skating

1:34:41 > 1:34:45not just because there won't be a single representative left in any

1:34:45 > 1:34:48race for the women but also because of the way the funding structure is,

1:34:48 > 1:34:51you know, whatever you think about, the World Championship nettles, the

1:34:51 > 1:34:56gold medals that Elise Christie she has won, they don't count, its

1:34:56 > 1:35:02Olympic medals. Mothers have a massive effect for the future of

1:35:02 > 1:35:07British are track speed skating?

1:35:07 > 1:35:09British are track speed skating? -- will this have a massive effect?The

1:35:09 > 1:35:15whole world has seen what has happened and hopefully Babel realise

1:35:15 > 1:35:18the sport is about investing in the future, finding new talent,

1:35:18 > 1:35:23hopefully my successes in the past, Nicky Gooch, and Elise Christie's

1:35:23 > 1:35:29success will all continue and contribute to future funding.Elise

1:35:29 > 1:35:33Christie has said she wants to be back in four years' time, can you

1:35:33 > 1:35:38and you know... I did hear that. I mean, the weight Short track speed

1:35:38 > 1:35:41skaters go on the pattern of their career, is it possible to come back

1:35:41 > 1:35:48in your 30s and still be the best? Absolutely. It's all about

1:35:48 > 1:35:53experience. I mean, somebody was asking me, what should she do after

1:35:53 > 1:35:57this and I said maybe she should take a year doing long track speed

1:35:57 > 1:36:01skating, working out and training but taking a break from the

1:36:01 > 1:36:06high-profile level that she has within the sport and hopefully three

1:36:06 > 1:36:10years into Beijing, 2022, start focusing maybe take another route.I

1:36:10 > 1:36:14have to say that long track speed Skating looks quite tempting, nobody

1:36:14 > 1:36:23else in the way. Absolutely! Thank you so much and I'm sorry for you

1:36:23 > 1:36:26guys out there that it's been such a disappointing day but thank you for

1:36:26 > 1:36:33everything you have contributed. Thank you very much. And it is,

1:36:33 > 1:36:38gosh, so much to take in, as Elise Christie said, she can't begin to

1:36:38 > 1:36:43think rationally about this, you are in the moment, you will have an

1:36:43 > 1:36:47emotional response, some up how strong you think she has been,

1:36:47 > 1:36:52Sarah, to want to do this today and also after the first of all, to say

1:36:52 > 1:36:57no, I am not giving up right now. Yes, we should be really, really

1:36:57 > 1:37:01proud that she is back on the ice today and she gave it everything she

1:37:01 > 1:37:09had, it was her one last shot. She had quite a lot of pressure on -- on

1:37:09 > 1:37:12her, the golden girl of the sport, emotionally this build-up for years

1:37:12 > 1:37:16that leads into the Olympic Games, this has been a plan for her for a

1:37:16 > 1:37:21long time. I think she needs to come back down and relax before deciding

1:37:21 > 1:37:25what to do next.I went to see her in Korea before the games and she

1:37:25 > 1:37:29kept talking about how she had to risk it all to gain gold. Do you

1:37:29 > 1:37:35think she has risked too much in the 500, 1500 and today doesn't really

1:37:35 > 1:37:39count because she wasn't fit and therefore was making decisions

1:37:39 > 1:37:42because she didn't feel strong enough but particularly the 500.Not

1:37:42 > 1:37:48really. We talk about her being world champion, when she became

1:37:48 > 1:37:51world champion last year she finished fourth in the 500 metres

1:37:51 > 1:37:56and she did this time. With place Olympic was what she got at the

1:37:56 > 1:38:02worlds, that's no mean feat, very impressive. I think in the 1500 we

1:38:02 > 1:38:07spoke, we underestimated the quality of the semifinal she was in and

1:38:07 > 1:38:10obviously having a silver and gold medallist in your semifinal will be

1:38:10 > 1:38:15tough and watching the replay back from the 1500 metres, she was half a

1:38:15 > 1:38:20metre out of mailing the overtake and go to the final. You are right,

1:38:20 > 1:38:23there was Lee and Choi and they ended up gold and silver in the

1:38:23 > 1:38:28final. She was up against it to finish first two, she had to take a

1:38:28 > 1:38:33risk in the 1500.When we talk about taking a risk, that's not settling,

1:38:33 > 1:38:38make sure you keep moving, you attack to win the race, be in the

1:38:38 > 1:38:42medals, if you start settling, the more you save, you are not moving

1:38:42 > 1:38:47up, you are moving backwards, things you need to try out. Take a risk and

1:38:47 > 1:38:52want to win but that does not mean you risk everything, we are not

1:38:52 > 1:38:56putting it all on the gold medal, she still wanted to be successful

1:38:56 > 1:39:01and take a risk in the race to do as best as she possibly can.In terms

1:39:01 > 1:39:06of talent, training, commitment to the sport, Sarah, she came into

1:39:06 > 1:39:09these games, you know, nothing is a certainty in short track speed

1:39:09 > 1:39:14skating because it seems to be incredibly rough, it's a very rough

1:39:14 > 1:39:19sport, but to leave it now with nothing, with no medal at all, you

1:39:19 > 1:39:22are right, fourth place is best Olympic finish in the 500 metres but

1:39:22 > 1:39:28she goes home with nothing. Doesn't that seem cruel? And if you look now

1:39:28 > 1:39:35at her Olympic experiences, in the last two games, I mean, that is

1:39:35 > 1:39:39desperate. I mean, even in short track speed skating, that is

1:39:39 > 1:39:45unlucky, isn't it?It's all part of the story, isn't it, for when she

1:39:45 > 1:39:51wins, I think.They will make a movie. Do you believe that can

1:39:51 > 1:39:55happen? If this ligament damage is bad and if it has been made worse

1:39:55 > 1:39:59today, she's going to take a long time to recover.With recovery for

1:39:59 > 1:40:04things like that it depends how you treat it initially. She doesn't have

1:40:04 > 1:40:10to do anything else, no other commitments, she can focus on that

1:40:10 > 1:40:14recovery, making sure it's back to. And then decide about training.

1:40:14 > 1:40:19Where are the younger short track speed skaters coming through, John,

1:40:19 > 1:40:24and where are they now? What has Elise done to increase interest in

1:40:24 > 1:40:29the sport? To have a world champion in the sport, so few people

1:40:29 > 1:40:33competing in the country, it's massive, everyone wants to emulate

1:40:33 > 1:40:36what Elise has done and go on and be successful in the World

1:40:36 > 1:40:40Championships and the Olympics. We set up an academy in the last couple

1:40:40 > 1:40:44of years since she became world champion, we've found a new athletes

1:40:44 > 1:40:48from other sports but improving the athletes currently in the sport from

1:40:48 > 1:40:55recent levels, down to club level, in the last week alone we've had

1:40:55 > 1:40:58over 150 people register their interest in the sport, it's not in

1:40:58 > 1:41:03the fairy tale story we wanted people are excited about short track

1:41:03 > 1:41:06speed skating, they are enjoying watching it for some reason. It's

1:41:06 > 1:41:12great to watch. Some of that excitement. They want to have a go,

1:41:12 > 1:41:16it has been massive over the last four years and we've been able to

1:41:16 > 1:41:21move forward, the sport is growing, that's fantastic.People are

1:41:21 > 1:41:23enjoying watching it, let's go back for more with

1:41:23 > 1:41:27enjoying watching it, let's go back for more with Simon. COMMENTATOR:,

1:41:27 > 1:41:37we have a crash, the Netherlands, they have stopped the race. It's not

1:41:37 > 1:41:49the first time we have had a race stopped this evening, local time.

1:41:49 > 1:41:52Daan Breeuwsma, from the Netherlands. Sprawling on the ice.

1:41:52 > 1:41:58What do you make of this?He clashes skates with the skater from

1:41:58 > 1:42:06Kazakhstan. You can see it from the reverse position. Clash blades as

1:42:06 > 1:42:16Daan Breeuwsma stamps on the

1:42:16 > 1:42:18Daan Breeuwsma stamps on the blade of his opponent, they are checking

1:42:18 > 1:42:22the blades are OK, they are a changing them completely, changing

1:42:22 > 1:42:28the blade. I think all three countries,

1:42:34 > 1:42:42including Charles Hamelin. The heat that we have missed so far, an

1:42:42 > 1:42:46Olympic athlete said a new record. A Polish surprise qualifier. There was

1:42:46 > 1:42:53a crash, predictably. A United States athlete was penalised but

1:42:53 > 1:43:00would not have gone through. In the second of the

1:43:03 > 1:43:08second of the heats, Samuel Samuel Girard from Canada went through very

1:43:08 > 1:43:22comfortably. In heat

1:43:23 > 1:43:32number three Seo Yira went through. It was chaotic and untidy. We are

1:43:32 > 1:43:35almost ready. The running repairs on the track have been frequent. As

1:43:35 > 1:43:44they fill the gaps, they spray them frozen again.Talking about running

1:43:44 > 1:43:58repairs, Simon, the Kazakhstan team really working on the

1:43:58 > 1:44:03really working on the blades of Denis Nikisha. They get up to speeds

1:44:03 > 1:44:06of 50 kilometres an hour, it's important they have their equipment

1:44:06 > 1:44:12right.Have you had any more time to reflect on the race of Elise

1:44:12 > 1:44:16Christie?I am still in shock, I came up from downstairs, still in

1:44:16 > 1:44:21shock to see she got a yellow card, I will probably ask someone this

1:44:21 > 1:44:24evening can I see the official reason why, they will probably said

1:44:24 > 1:44:32no but at least I will be able to ask.Packed in here again once more

1:44:32 > 1:44:38as we wait for the rerun of this heat number four in the men's 500

1:44:38 > 1:44:44metres. Such a mad dash, no room for error whatsoever. Particularly in

1:44:44 > 1:44:51the first round, these heats, the seeding order is randomly done by

1:44:51 > 1:44:55the computer. After this, it's done by the fastest skater drawn in the

1:44:55 > 1:45:03number Lane. They will come up to the line shortly. Daan Breeuwsma has

1:45:03 > 1:45:06never finished better than 14th in the World Championship. Denis

1:45:06 > 1:45:15Nikisha six in the world last year. Limb from Korea, the Olympic

1:45:15 > 1:45:20champion. Away they go. Clearly this time. Denis Nikisha from Kazakhstan

1:45:20 > 1:45:25goes to the front.

1:45:27 > 1:45:35He has seen a little gap, and he goes sliding through it.Denis

1:45:35 > 1:45:41Nikisha is storming away now.Lim Hyojun has gone very wide here,

1:45:41 > 1:45:48Charles Hamelin tries to get through on the inside. As they come round

1:45:48 > 1:45:51now, Lim Hyojun takes the bell with the advantage of some considerable

1:45:51 > 1:46:02distance back to second place, and the career wins it.

1:46:02 > 1:46:07the career wins it. Charles Hamelin of Canada is in third.I wouldn't be

1:46:07 > 1:46:15surprised to see Charles Hamelin get a penalty therefore an infringement

1:46:15 > 1:46:21on Denis Nikisha. And that

1:46:21 > 1:46:25on Denis Nikisha. And that is why Daan Breeuwsma got through into

1:46:25 > 1:46:29second.Once again, we saw Lim Hyojun who is in the form of his

1:46:29 > 1:46:33young life here. When you have an Olympic gold medal in your pocket,

1:46:33 > 1:46:38it is easy to take risks, and you feel a lot more relaxed. You see him

1:46:38 > 1:46:40go through, making it look so easy, and this is where the problem

1:46:40 > 1:46:48happened with Charles Hamelin and Denis Nikisha. It is because Lim had

1:46:48 > 1:46:52gone very wide on the corner, and Charles Hamelin saw the opportunity

1:46:52 > 1:46:57and try to go through.Particularly what happens in short track, if you

1:46:57 > 1:47:01are good on the 1500m it doesn't necessarily mean you will be good of

1:47:01 > 1:47:05500 metres, we start to see more and more specialist. Charles Hamelin

1:47:05 > 1:47:09knows he is the culprit, he has walked off the rink. That was more

1:47:09 > 1:47:18of the scowl and stop box for him as he disappears. He was ninth and 13th

1:47:18 > 1:47:22in the other two vents, it is not really been his Olympics. And he

1:47:22 > 1:47:28does get a penalty, he knew it, that is why he walked off. And Denis

1:47:28 > 1:47:37Nikisha from Kazakhstan is advanced, so Daan

1:47:37 > 1:47:40so Daan -- Lim Hyojun, Daan Breeuwsma and Denis Nikisha all go

1:47:40 > 1:47:44through.And skaters who are advanced are advanced to the outer

1:47:44 > 1:47:51lane.And a reminder that we have eight heat here. Now, next up, we

1:47:51 > 1:47:58have the Olympic Athlete from Russia on the right-hand side. And the

1:47:58 > 1:48:08false start gives me a chance to complete this line-up.

1:48:08 > 1:48:14complete this line-up. Ren Ziwei there

1:48:14 > 1:48:20there in the red, and Knegt is the world champion at this distance, he

1:48:20 > 1:48:29is the big Hope for the Dutch

1:48:29 > 1:48:31is the big Hope for the Dutch here all the skaters will now have to

1:48:31 > 1:48:44wait. It was skate and other two who was given the false tarte.

1:48:45 > 1:48:48Turbat two from Kazakhstan, he has done well to get into second place,

1:48:48 > 1:48:54Ren Ziwei is in second, a bit of a gap back to Sjinkie Knegt, the

1:48:54 > 1:48:58Dutchman, putting himself into position, one would think.Very

1:48:58 > 1:49:02similar situation as Elise Christie, at the back. You don't need to

1:49:02 > 1:49:07panic, you still have two laps to go.There will be one lap to go next

1:49:07 > 1:49:12time over the line, Sjinkie Knegt squeezes in on the inside of

1:49:12 > 1:49:21Alexander Sheldon. It is really tight, and Sjinkie Knegt is out of

1:49:21 > 1:49:30it there because the Chinese athlete Ren Ziwei wins it, and the Russian

1:49:30 > 1:49:34athlete benefited from the battle between Sjinkie Knegt and

1:49:34 > 1:49:39Zhumagaziyev.Sjinkie Knegt coming from third place, moving into

1:49:39 > 1:49:44second, and it can go any way.Would you say with an athlete as good as

1:49:44 > 1:49:47Sjinkie Knegt in a race like this, would it not be better for him to

1:49:47 > 1:49:51put himself towards the front earlier where he avoids this sort of

1:49:51 > 1:49:54scenario where he was in a more desperate situation on the last lap

1:49:54 > 1:49:59when he was really under pressure? As I was saying before, when you are

1:49:59 > 1:50:02drawn in the heat on the very outside lane, this is the Olympic

1:50:02 > 1:50:10Games. It is so tight, the level of short track speed skating is so

1:50:10 > 1:50:13tight amongst the athletes, that can make the difference just from your

1:50:13 > 1:50:17lane draw, so obviously he is coming back from fourth place going into

1:50:17 > 1:50:25third place, moving up slowly. So we have to wait and see now what Peter

1:50:25 > 1:50:30Worth, the referee from Great Britain, has to make of this. So,

1:50:30 > 1:50:45Ren Ziwei provisionally first. And just waiting for confirmation of the

1:50:45 > 1:50:47result from this 500 metres. The judges have reached a conclusion,

1:50:47 > 1:50:54thankfully it didn't take too long, so let's have a luck again as

1:50:54 > 1:51:00Sjinkie Knegt try to find a way through. And Sjinkie Knegt is given

1:51:00 > 1:51:05a penalty, and the Dutchman is out, and Zhumagaziyev of Kazakhstan is

1:51:05 > 1:51:13advanced to go through as well as Ren Ziwei, and Aleksandr Shulginov.

1:51:13 > 1:51:20That is the confirmation.Again, flabbergasted with that decision.

1:51:20 > 1:51:24You could see him moving across, closing the gap, and then they

1:51:24 > 1:51:29awarded the penalty.Plenty to talk about with your short track friends

1:51:29 > 1:51:36over dinner later on with the decisions tonight! And now, heat

1:51:36 > 1:51:49number six. The Japanese skater was fifth in the 1000m here. Pavlasek

1:51:49 > 1:52:06nick, the athlete from Russia -- Pavel Sitnikov, and,

1:52:06 > 1:52:13Pavel Sitnikov, and, with Shaoang Liu taking control of this early.

1:52:13 > 1:52:22One or two go through to the quarterfinals, and Abzal of

1:52:22 > 1:52:35Kazakhstan taking control. And Sakho from Japan, he wasn't going to take

1:52:35 > 1:52:42any chances in that race, he got away well, he stayed there, but he

1:52:42 > 1:52:46got away from the others, not least for Pavel Sitnikov, for a while he

1:52:46 > 1:52:50was in a good position, but then he lost his balance is the challenges

1:52:50 > 1:52:56grew in ferocity. But Shaoang Liu of Hungary led from start to finish,

1:52:56 > 1:53:00blocking well, not allowing any skaters to come past him, compose,

1:53:00 > 1:53:07you can just see there, he almost got knocked down as they approached

1:53:07 > 1:53:14this bend, you could see the hand on the backside of the Hungarian

1:53:14 > 1:53:18skater, Liu. And as he is coming out of the bend, knocked off balance,

1:53:18 > 1:53:23both skates on the ice, really carving into the turn to make sure

1:53:23 > 1:53:32he goes across the line first.

1:53:32 > 1:53:34he goes across the line first.A lot of pressure put on Shaoang Liu as

1:53:34 > 1:53:37Pavel Sitnikov has been given a penalty, so Shaoang Liu qualifies,

1:53:37 > 1:53:47as does Ryosuke Sakazume from Japan, and the Kazakhstan skater advances

1:53:47 > 1:53:53as well, so some of these races in the court of finals are going to

1:53:53 > 1:53:58have additional skaters, it will be more traffic. Until this afternoon,

1:53:58 > 1:54:04this evening, we had 34 penalties from 12 different countries. I think

1:54:04 > 1:54:09it is probably up to about 45 penalties now, and now we have a

1:54:09 > 1:54:23North Korean speed skater in the red, Jong Kwang Bom. And the North

1:54:23 > 1:54:30Korean skater goes down, and we will have a restart.

1:54:31 > 1:54:34have a restart. I don't understand that, he fell with nobody in the

1:54:34 > 1:54:37way, no contact with any other skater whatsoever, and they are

1:54:37 > 1:54:43having a restart. , so the second opportunity afforded here. Let's

1:54:43 > 1:54:49watch this once more.He dug his toe from the right skate, and clearly

1:54:49 > 1:54:53you can see here there is no contact whatsoever. The only contact comes

1:54:53 > 1:54:56after he has fallen with the Japanese skater, who manages to stay

1:54:56 > 1:55:02on his feet. That will be the reason why they have restarted, we are up

1:55:02 > 1:55:05in the stands and we can't really see that far down to the ice. That

1:55:05 > 1:55:13was a very nervous start for the loan North Korean short track racer.

1:55:13 > 1:55:19And he will have garage a couple of divot out of the ice with his

1:55:19 > 1:55:25blades, so the repairs are pretty quick here. They pack some ice in

1:55:25 > 1:55:32and then spray it so that it hardens instantaneously and we shouldn't

1:55:32 > 1:55:43have too much of a delay here. Hwang Daeheon is fourth ranked in the

1:55:43 > 1:55:47World Cup in this distance, he is up athlete they have high hopes of, but

1:55:47 > 1:55:53it hasn't worked out so far. For one, it has been brilliant, and for

1:55:53 > 1:55:58Hwang Daeheon it hasn't been quite so good, 14th and 17th in the two

1:55:58 > 1:56:01events so far.Very disappointing considering his World Championships

1:56:01 > 1:56:08performance.

1:56:08 > 1:56:11performance.Thomas Hong of the United States is in this field as

1:56:11 > 1:56:17well. The tracksuit tops are off once again. And they will go once

1:56:17 > 1:56:22more.

1:56:23 > 1:56:35more. Cato Watanabe of Japan, and the North Korean is on the deck and

1:56:35 > 1:56:40out of the race very quickly. Leading the way by a mile here is

1:56:40 > 1:56:47Hwang Daeheon of career, being chased by Watanabe of Japan, quite a

1:56:47 > 1:56:51gap back to Thomas Hong of the United States. And it is all about

1:56:51 > 1:56:55the time, they are trying to skaters fast as possible because the time

1:56:55 > 1:56:58they set in the heat will determine the lane they draw in the

1:56:58 > 1:57:04quarterfinals.It looks like Hwang Daeheon is really going for it, he

1:57:04 > 1:57:10will win this by a mile, and Watanabe will go through to the

1:57:10 > 1:57:14quarterfinals, soap Hwang Daeheon in first place, Watanabe in second,

1:57:14 > 1:57:18Thomas Hong of the United States in three, and still skating around,

1:57:18 > 1:57:23getting ready to come into the finish is Jong Kwang Bom of North

1:57:23 > 1:57:27Korea, but his race was over very quickly. He got into a bit of an

1:57:27 > 1:57:32elbow match almost from the very gun. They didn't take part in the

1:57:32 > 1:57:36limit qualifying events, and the IOC awarded them an extra spot to try to

1:57:36 > 1:57:42promote the event in North Korea, but it clearly he has very little

1:57:42 > 1:57:45experience at this level, and that could be dangerous for the other

1:57:45 > 1:57:51skaters. You can see him there pushing that right hand. And

1:57:51 > 1:57:56Watanabe on the outside, he is just pushing him away, and again, he is

1:57:56 > 1:57:59just knocked off balance, and it will be interesting to see what

1:57:59 > 1:58:03Peter Worth has to make of this. But this man had no trouble whatsoever.

1:58:03 > 1:58:09He is a class act, isn't he? Really comfortable, a great start for him

1:58:09 > 1:58:16in these 500 metres. The short visit to the competition for Jong Kwang

1:58:16 > 1:58:24Bom of North Korea. First international event of any note as

1:58:24 > 1:58:30far as we can tell from him. Yet again, the judges are reviewing the

1:58:30 > 1:58:39action. And I think he will be the culprit in this one. Of receiving a

1:58:39 > 1:58:47penalty, I really think we do, I think we are up to number 47 by now.

1:58:47 > 1:58:52And the skater from the peoples were of career, Jong Kwang Bom, receives

1:58:52 > 1:58:58a penalty from the referee, but it doesn't affect the result at all,

1:58:58 > 1:59:04and that is confirmation of the result. One more heat to come, and

1:59:04 > 1:59:09my goodness me, what a high-quality one it is as well, this is almost

1:59:09 > 1:59:20worthy of an Olympic final. Han Tianyu

1:59:20 > 1:59:26Tianyu of China, Shaolin Sandor Liu, John-Henry Krueger who won Silver in

1:59:26 > 1:59:33the 1000m the other day, and what a field. Someone will have to make way

1:59:33 > 1:59:39here.

1:59:39 > 1:59:43here. Shaolin Sandor Liu thinks he needs to get to the front, and he is

1:59:43 > 1:59:47being chased by Han Tianyu. John-Henry Krueger from the USA at

1:59:47 > 1:59:51the back just has to wait, there is nothing he can really do.This is

1:59:51 > 1:59:56going to be really tight, one lap to go and over the line. Shaolin Sandor

1:59:56 > 2:00:02Liu from hungry leads the way, and Han Tianyu is in second place,

2:00:02 > 2:00:05Seaman Elistratov trying to steal it at the end, I'm not sure if he will

2:00:05 > 2:00:09find a way through, I'm not sure if he found it, such a high-quality

2:00:09 > 2:00:12field, nothing John-Henry Krueger could do about it in terms of moving

2:00:12 > 2:00:15up from the back, it was a high paced, high quality race, on the

2:00:15 > 2:00:23first two over the line, Shaolin Sandor Liu and Han Tianyu.

2:00:23 > 2:00:28I think it says it all, the way they started, one, two, three, four on

2:00:28 > 2:00:34the line. Shaolin Sandor Liu paced himself by going round the outside

2:00:34 > 2:00:38and then it was game over the.For the near shaped it, in a race like

2:00:38 > 2:00:46this with four really good skaters, the lottery of how they start, will

2:00:46 > 2:00:51that be the decisive factor? Probably. The sport is still growing

2:00:51 > 2:00:55and learning. We need to look at the rules and regulations of the first

2:00:55 > 2:00:59round pick, because the seeding of the races is based on the World

2:00:59 > 2:01:03Cups. In World Cup status, this is correct, but in terms of the lane

2:01:03 > 2:01:09draw they get on the 1000 metres, it is done by the computer on the very

2:01:09 > 2:01:13first round. And he looked very comfortable indeed.Shaolin Sandor

2:01:13 > 2:01:21loop going through in qualifying, as well as Han Tianyu from China.

2:01:21 > 2:01:29Elistratov won a bronze the other day in another event. And that

2:01:29 > 2:01:33completes the men's 500 metre heats. The quarterfinal line-up, who has

2:01:33 > 2:01:46impressed you so far?I think Wu Dajing is the man to look to. Like

2:01:46 > 2:01:50the long track yesterday, the 500 metres is such a top event, so many

2:01:50 > 2:01:57people that can qualify. And can take home gold. I don't like to say

2:01:57 > 2:02:03any name, because probably after Thursday evening, they will go out

2:02:03 > 2:02:08in the quarterfinals.The crowd have a chance to grab a drink, a stack,

2:02:08 > 2:02:12and catch their breath. They are resurfacing the ice and then later

2:02:12 > 2:02:17on we have the potential mayhem of the ladies 3000 metre relay finals

2:02:17 > 2:02:22with four times as many athletes on the track. STUDIO: We will certainly

2:02:22 > 2:02:26be back for that. Amazing for the short track speed skating. If you're

2:02:26 > 2:02:30tuning in wondering what happens to Elise Christie, at nine o'clock this

2:02:30 > 2:02:36morning it was confirmed she would line-up for her heat in the 1000

2:02:36 > 2:02:43metres. This was the event in which she is world champion. John and

2:02:43 > 2:02:46Sarah alongside me to analyse what happened. In the first starchy tried

2:02:46 > 2:02:54to take the lead. What happened? She to run, she went off hard. And she

2:02:54 > 2:02:58caught blades with the girl next to from Hungary and tripped over and

2:02:58 > 2:03:07fell. Probably a little bit rattled. What are the rules on the restart?

2:03:07 > 2:03:10They will restart the race if there is a clash before the apex block,

2:03:10 > 2:03:18the middle block of the first corner. If police had fallen there,

2:03:18 > 2:03:21it disturbs the race because she would have stopped Andreas Kessler

2:03:21 > 2:03:27moving forward in the race. The race has been disturbed. We have seen

2:03:27 > 2:03:32other races where they have fallen on their own and carried on.A

2:03:32 > 2:03:36pretty hard impact on the ice. She holds the right ankle, which is

2:03:36 > 2:03:42where the problem has been since a fall in the semifinals of the 1500.

2:03:42 > 2:03:45Nicky Gooch, the coach, made adjustments to her skates and the

2:03:45 > 2:03:49referee talks to her as well. The assumption was it was over and she

2:03:49 > 2:03:54was out, but she lined up again. We all thought that, we sat back in our

2:03:54 > 2:04:02hearts sank, we thought it was finished. She went over to the side,

2:04:02 > 2:04:04sorted out her blades and then started the race again. Different

2:04:04 > 2:04:10tactics this time. She wanted to give it her best shot, but we know

2:04:10 > 2:04:14in 1000 metres she can still make up some ground. It looked like when she

2:04:14 > 2:04:18got going she was skating quite nicely. She catches up with the pack

2:04:18 > 2:04:21and starts to make moves and then you see that she is not her usual

2:04:21 > 2:04:26confident self. Her options are either sweet whites to go round them

2:04:26 > 2:04:31all or pick them off one by one on the inside.I think she was trying

2:04:31 > 2:04:35to make it easy for herself, make the overtaking easy without making a

2:04:35 > 2:04:39big move round the outside. She looks very conscious of her ankle

2:04:39 > 2:04:45while she is skating round. As we see from the first overtake, she

2:04:45 > 2:04:49makes it quite nicely, comfortable, the gap appears and she slots in.

2:04:49 > 2:04:54She read it well and makes it look easy. We start to think, here we go.

2:04:54 > 2:05:00But no, the next one is very first real issue comes. She makes the

2:05:00 > 2:05:04overtake, she gets alongside her, and that's where a lease in her

2:05:04 > 2:05:07interview mentioned she didn't think it was a penalty.But the problem

2:05:07 > 2:05:12is, she causes the crash, and that is the first penalty. She looked a

2:05:12 > 2:05:16bit wobbly, did well to recover and then goes for the undertake again.

2:05:16 > 2:05:21She makes this one quite nicely but I think it's when she starts to

2:05:21 > 2:05:26block and is too forceful on her blocking to shut the track down. And

2:05:26 > 2:05:30that means penalty number two, resulting in the yellow card. She

2:05:30 > 2:05:37knows there, the Bell has gone and somebody has taken over her on the

2:05:37 > 2:05:43inside and there is not enough time to get back to second place to

2:05:43 > 2:05:46qualify. She was deathly trying to hold her position to get through to

2:05:46 > 2:05:52the next round. She is alongside the Hungarian girl there, but she can't

2:05:52 > 2:05:54get enough space to make it comfortable. And that causes the

2:05:54 > 2:06:02crash.

2:06:02 > 2:06:05crash. She is pushing and using her arm a little bit. She doesn't want

2:06:05 > 2:06:09to get back pastor. Nicky Gooch carrying her off, that was always

2:06:09 > 2:06:14the plan because we didn't want her to walk in her skates. Walking round

2:06:14 > 2:06:18in speed skates with long blades is not the most comfortable, so with a

2:06:18 > 2:06:22sore ankle, the idea was to get her off the ice and get her as quick as

2:06:22 > 2:06:25possible with her skates off, because fingers crossed she was to

2:06:25 > 2:06:31redo the next round. It is to Elise Christie's credit that she lined up

2:06:31 > 2:06:35twice and went straight to David McDaid after to give this interview.

2:06:35 > 2:06:40First of all, tell us what's going through your mind.To be honest, not

2:06:40 > 2:06:50much. A few days ago I didn't think I would be getting on the ice. I did

2:06:50 > 2:06:53everything I could to turn this around. I had ligament damage in my

2:06:53 > 2:06:59ankle. Putting a skate on with that is not the comfiest thing in the

2:06:59 > 2:07:04world. We did everything we could to turn this around. It obviously

2:07:04 > 2:07:09wasn't meant to be.If it was any other competition, would you have

2:07:09 > 2:07:15been on the start line today? No, I would have been off the ice for five

2:07:15 > 2:07:19or six weeks. I wouldn't have gone back if it was the World

2:07:19 > 2:07:23Championships, and that would have been my choice... That wouldn't have

2:07:23 > 2:07:26been my choice, I would have been told I couldn't go back. But the

2:07:26 > 2:07:32only reason I got the choice was because it was the Olympics. To me

2:07:32 > 2:07:36being kicked and falling at the start didn't matter. I had trained

2:07:36 > 2:07:42all my life for this, it was everything to me. And, yes, it's

2:07:42 > 2:07:47done.I think everyone watching will think you have a hell of a lot of

2:07:47 > 2:07:55guts.Thanks. I felt I owed it to Britain, you know? I want to get

2:07:55 > 2:08:00short track out there. It's an amazing sport. At times it can do

2:08:00 > 2:08:04this to you. I can put my hands up right now and say I have no idea why

2:08:04 > 2:08:09I got the yellow card. When I watched the race I was kicked at the

2:08:09 > 2:08:14start and fell over. I have never had a yellow card in my life. I very

2:08:14 > 2:08:20rarely get penalties. I went up the inside. I went past the girl on the

2:08:20 > 2:08:25video. I have no idea. The only thing I can think is possibly the

2:08:25 > 2:08:28referee doesn't think it is safe by race with my ankle the way it is

2:08:28 > 2:08:32because he was encouraging me to get off the ice when I fell at the

2:08:32 > 2:08:36start. If that is it then fair enough. I can see why he might not

2:08:36 > 2:08:41want me to race like that, because it might not be the safest. But,

2:08:41 > 2:08:47yeah...We know how much work you put in and you are talking about but

2:08:47 > 2:08:50in short track out there. I think you have done that, you are the

2:08:50 > 2:08:57world champion. How do you sum up these games? I think it's fair to

2:08:57 > 2:09:01say it hasn't really gone very well. LAUGHTER

2:09:01 > 2:09:07You would have to ask me tomorrow. Right now I'm a little bit

2:09:07 > 2:09:12shell-shocked. I worked so hard to come back from this injury. I think

2:09:12 > 2:09:19a thousand people wouldn't have skated with my ankle the way it was.

2:09:19 > 2:09:23The only thing I can say is I can promise of Britain that I will fight

2:09:23 > 2:09:29back from this and I will come back for Beijing. And hopefully I can do

2:09:29 > 2:09:35Britain proud then.Back to Beijing. I know after the last time you felt

2:09:35 > 2:09:39you couldn't go on, but this time you don't feel that. It's different

2:09:39 > 2:09:45this time, you can go to Beijing. Yes, I have so much belief in the

2:09:45 > 2:09:53programme and myself, and none of that was my physical capability. It

2:09:53 > 2:10:01was just... Short track! What else can I say? Everyone has been such a

2:10:01 > 2:10:06massive support to me. Team GB has turned this around. Everybody at

2:10:06 > 2:10:09home, most people, anyway, I can't believe how supportive they have

2:10:09 > 2:10:17been. I definitely believe I can come back to medal in Beijing, but I

2:10:17 > 2:10:22just have to wait for more years. It just wasn't to be this time.Despite

2:10:22 > 2:10:26what happened, we are all immensely proud of you. You are the world

2:10:26 > 2:10:30champion. Lots of people come to the Olympics and don't win medals. We

2:10:30 > 2:10:33are really proud you had the guts to get out of the start line and we

2:10:33 > 2:10:38look forward to seeing you in Beijing. Thank you.Thank you, and I

2:10:38 > 2:10:44would like to thank all the kids who have sent me messages. I really

2:10:44 > 2:10:47appreciate all those kids sending me messages saying they are inspired by

2:10:47 > 2:10:52me. They have no idea what that means to me, but it's amazing that

2:10:52 > 2:10:56five-year-olds and seven-year-olds can find me inspiring. It brings

2:10:56 > 2:11:02tears to my eyes. Thanks very much. STUDIO: Elise Christie doing well to

2:11:02 > 2:11:05hold it together and be as philosophical as she can be. This is

2:11:05 > 2:11:11the rule infringement she committed. If there is more than one

2:11:11 > 2:11:18infringement,...

2:11:23 > 2:11:29As John and Sarah made clear, there are two incidents. The first, John,

2:11:29 > 2:11:35was this 50-50 or was this a lease's fault?As she goes down the straight

2:11:35 > 2:11:40and across the start line, she gets alongside Andrea. -- or was this a

2:11:40 > 2:11:48lease's fault. But then the Hungarian girl is back in front. You

2:11:48 > 2:11:57put your hands... Your fate in the referee's hands. The second one was

2:11:57 > 2:12:01Elise Christie trying too hard to shut the door and making sure the

2:12:01 > 2:12:05girl doesn't come past. It's the last lap and she's trying as hard as

2:12:05 > 2:12:10possible. For me that was a clear penalty. You have seen a lot of

2:12:10 > 2:12:13short track skating between you and have been involved ourselves. Were

2:12:13 > 2:12:19you surprised when the yellow card came up?Yes.Surprised to see the

2:12:19 > 2:12:23yellow card because like Elise says, she's never had a yellow card and

2:12:23 > 2:12:26it's probably the one thing we haven't seen yet from her. It's

2:12:26 > 2:12:30another one that we throw into the mix. We talk about it being a tough

2:12:30 > 2:12:34sport and not fair on Elise, but she finds different ways to put us

2:12:34 > 2:12:38through the mill, sort of thing. We talk about that sport, it's unfair,

2:12:38 > 2:12:43but for it to keep happening to the same person over and over again,

2:12:43 > 2:12:48it's tough. However many times we watched that interview come you

2:12:48 > 2:12:51don't get desensitised to the emotion of it. Every time you watch

2:12:51 > 2:12:57it, you have a lump in your throat, tears in your eyes. It's a sad end

2:12:57 > 2:13:04for this Olympics for her.For anyone watching at home who doesn't

2:13:04 > 2:13:07know Elise, they will be feeling that emotion. And you feel it keenly

2:13:07 > 2:13:11because you know her so well. And I feel the butterflies before she goes

2:13:11 > 2:13:17out to race. I have sweaty palms, I can't breathe watching the race as

2:13:17 > 2:13:22it unfolds. And afterwards, when she wins, I have tears in my eyes happy

2:13:22 > 2:13:27for her, screaming the room down. And when she fails or falls or

2:13:27 > 2:13:32crashes or loses, I feel that too. Such is the interest in Elise

2:13:32 > 2:13:38Christie, this is a global story, not just a British story. The

2:13:38 > 2:13:41overall World Cup champion, the world jabbing at 1500 and 1000

2:13:41 > 2:13:45metres. All the rest of the press wanted to talk to her. And you could

2:13:45 > 2:13:49hear in the crowd, the shock when she went down at the start of the

2:13:49 > 2:13:52heat. The crowd have been supporting her. She spent a lot of time in

2:13:52 > 2:13:56South Korea and they understand their short track speed skating. You

2:13:56 > 2:14:04could see the time she gave to all the media outlets to answer the

2:14:04 > 2:14:07questions that they had. That in itself is draining. The whole

2:14:07 > 2:14:11experience has been exhausting, and yet, within those interviews, to be

2:14:11 > 2:14:15able to say, I am prepared to come back in Beijing and take even more

2:14:15 > 2:14:21of this. That's a testament to what she said about the programme behind

2:14:21 > 2:14:24her, the support she had and what she has been through since Sochi.

2:14:24 > 2:14:27You have seen how she has been able to face up to her issues in these

2:14:27 > 2:14:33games. She has been emotional, but that's her coping mechanism. The

2:14:33 > 2:14:36team around have put everything in place and that will be there when

2:14:36 > 2:14:41she comes on, probably more so, so she can come back and they will make

2:14:41 > 2:14:44sure she's in the best possible place, especially in the next couple

2:14:44 > 2:14:47of months because she will have to go through rehab and make herself

2:14:47 > 2:14:52fit healthy again.Wilf O'Reilly was asking if she might make the

2:14:52 > 2:14:56decision to go to long track skating or indeed cycling. Are those

2:14:56 > 2:14:58realistic options?

2:15:04 > 2:15:08She loves sport, I think she is an athlete, I don't think she will move

2:15:08 > 2:15:12into another sport. I can't speak for her but I think she will want to

2:15:12 > 2:15:16do activity and she might want to go and play some sport but I don't

2:15:16 > 2:15:20think she will switch - due loves short-track.And you can't

2:15:20 > 2:15:23underestimate the skills that are involved in another sport, sort of

2:15:23 > 2:15:27things and I think she would like to have a go at other things edit if it

2:15:27 > 2:15:30gives her that mental break and that freshen up sort of thing and

2:15:30 > 2:15:34hopefully we will see her back on the ice and raring to go.When you

2:15:34 > 2:15:39go through your big debrief with British short-track, do you try and

2:15:39 > 2:15:47work out, why does this happen at the Olympics specifically, when

2:15:47 > 2:15:49clearly, there might be disqualifications but the same

2:15:49 > 2:15:54things do not happen at the World Championships?Yes, there will be a

2:15:54 > 2:15:57big review and hopefully there will be some clear evidence that we can

2:15:57 > 2:16:01point our fingers to certain things but at this moment in time I can sit

2:16:01 > 2:16:05here and say pretty confidently that the guys have done everything they

2:16:05 > 2:16:10possibly can. Yes, we have had some bad luck but that is part of sport

2:16:10 > 2:16:13and we plan for different scenarios, but the guys will be sitting there

2:16:13 > 2:16:16tonight absolutely devastated but they were no getting up tomorrow

2:16:16 > 2:16:20that they did everything they possibly could to get a lease,

2:16:20 > 2:16:22Farrell and Josh and all of the others in the best possible

2:16:22 > 2:16:27condition to compete.Sport is so unpredictable and we have got all of

2:16:27 > 2:16:31our hopes pinned on one athlete. The stronger the depth in our sport and

2:16:31 > 2:16:35the more people we can get involved, then we're not in that situation

2:16:35 > 2:16:39hopefully in four years' time, and there is a much stronger team going

2:16:39 > 2:16:42in and more than one person can be our medal hope. And we have seen

2:16:42 > 2:16:48that in skeleton, with Laura Davies backing up Lizzy Yarnold. And we

2:16:48 > 2:16:51have got some great grassroots, some great clubs doing fantastic work

2:16:51 > 2:16:55with some young kids, and we're really seeing that improving but

2:16:55 > 2:16:59they need the support and help like any other sport. If we get that as

2:16:59 > 2:17:03well, we can really move forward, we've got some fantastic athletes in

2:17:03 > 2:17:07our sport, we just need to keep them coming.Elise Christie's exit from

2:17:07 > 2:17:11these Olympic Games will be the headline on day 11, but here's what

2:17:11 > 2:17:17else has been happening today. Great Britain's men's curling team look to

2:17:17 > 2:17:22be on course for a semifinal spot after a convincing 10-3 win over

2:17:22 > 2:17:28Norway. It was also a very good day for Britain's female curlers, who

2:17:28 > 2:17:31beat Japan eightsix, and they're now well placed to qualify, with a just

2:17:31 > 2:17:38one match, against Canada, to come. Talking of Canada, Tessa Virtue and

2:17:38 > 2:17:42Scott Moir became the most decorated figure skaters in Olympic history

2:17:42 > 2:17:48after winning a second gold medal of these games in the ice dance,

2:17:48 > 2:17:52pipping Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who took the

2:17:52 > 2:17:57silver. And Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland finished in a creditable

2:17:57 > 2:18:0211th position, their third Olympics together. They have both had to

2:18:02 > 2:18:06overcome serious injury issues. Cassie Sharpe lived up to her

2:18:06 > 2:18:11billing as favourite by taking the women's freestyle skiing halfpipe

2:18:11 > 2:18:16gold the Canada. Great day for them. Meanwhile Britain's Rowan Cheshire

2:18:16 > 2:18:19completed her comeback from a horrible crash in so cheap with an

2:18:19 > 2:18:26impressive seventh placed finish. But in qualifying for the men's ski

2:18:26 > 2:18:29halfpipe, Murray Buchan and Peter Speight narrowly missed out on a

2:18:29 > 2:18:36place in Thursdays final. The American trio topped the standings.

2:18:36 > 2:18:40Now, there was more breaking news this morning, with the Court of

2:18:40 > 2:18:43Arbitration for Sport and announcing that a player from the Slovenia

2:18:43 > 2:18:47men's ice hockey team, Ziga Jeglic, had tested positive for a banned

2:18:47 > 2:18:53substance. He will leave the Games within 24 hours after accepting a

2:18:53 > 2:19:02positive test for the band asthma medication. And that news became

2:19:02 > 2:19:05publicly just before Slovenia's game against Norway this morning, and

2:19:05 > 2:19:13this is how they get on with out him.

2:19:13 > 2:19:17Can Norway use their energy, or will it be Slovenia, with the superior

2:19:17 > 2:19:26skill, to reach the quarterfinals and a blood chilling matchup with an

2:19:26 > 2:19:30OAR side who have been a class apart in this tournament so far? Slovenia

2:19:30 > 2:19:44will want to start this one quickly. That one is held onto.

2:19:44 > 2:19:51That one is held onto. Goes across the zone, and that is over the top.

2:19:51 > 2:19:58Another shot and a goal! Or is it?! It is! Took some time for the

2:19:58 > 2:20:04referee to recognise that! 28 seconds of the power play have gone

2:20:04 > 2:20:10and Slovenia have the lead!

2:20:14 > 2:20:16and Slovenia have the lead! Well, he was set up three separate times and

2:20:16 > 2:20:24the first two went right over the net. Then the captain Mursak tried

2:20:24 > 2:20:34for a third time. And Norway score! And Tommy Kristiansen will get the

2:20:34 > 2:20:38credit! This game is up in the! A place in the quarterfinals very much

2:20:38 > 2:20:44at stake!

2:20:44 > 2:20:50at stake! What a pass and that was wave too nonchalant from the

2:20:50 > 2:20:59Slovenian defender Kovacevic. Tommy Kristiansen driving hard to the net.

2:20:59 > 2:21:09It is going to be power play time if as the browser will now go.

2:21:09 > 2:21:14SETH BENNETT: CAPNEXT we are going into overtime - 60 minutes can't

2:21:14 > 2:21:19split these two!

2:21:22 > 2:21:28split these two! Thoresen, can he finish in style! Could be a chance

2:21:28 > 2:21:37now... They score!

2:21:37 > 2:21:43now... They score! Norway have won it in overtime!

2:21:43 > 2:21:46it in overtime! There is no-one in the blue paint, you've got to think

2:21:46 > 2:21:52this is a good goal.

2:21:52 > 2:21:53this is a good goal. Norway are quarterfinalists after beating

2:21:53 > 2:22:00Slovenia in overtime here at the Winter Olympics. And Kent Simpson

2:22:00 > 2:22:02joins us, he was a professional ice

2:22:02 > 2:22:02Winter Olympics. And Kent Simpson joins us, he was a professional ice

2:22:02 > 2:22:06hockey player for nine years, represented Canada and has played in

2:22:06 > 2:22:10the UK for Sheffield Steelers. Can I talk you first of all about how

2:22:10 > 2:22:13Slovenia were affected by missing Ziga Jeglic and also more on what it

2:22:13 > 2:22:18is he has tested positive for wanted you can imagine this was a big blow

2:22:18 > 2:22:21to the team just a couple of hours before they took to the ice if one

2:22:21 > 2:22:26of their best players taken to the court of arbitration and it is

2:22:26 > 2:22:34anti-doping, an asthma medication. And the bed biggest thing is puddle

2:22:34 > 2:22:39and banned substances but because this person might have asthma, all

2:22:39 > 2:22:44you have to do is disclose it and if you does so, typically you can carry

2:22:44 > 2:22:48on playing. So it almost seems like this was Miss communication, the

2:22:48 > 2:22:52team officials did not let the anti-doping officials know that he

2:22:52 > 2:22:55was taking this which means it is a violation. And actually he put his

2:22:55 > 2:23:00hand up and said, yes, guilty, I'm out.Exactly. It does not sound like

2:23:00 > 2:23:06he opposed it was said, I didn't do this. He admitted guilt, which leads

2:23:06 > 2:23:09you to believe that he thought he was innocent. This was something

2:23:09 > 2:23:14that he thought he was allowed to take. But in this day and age, with

2:23:14 > 2:23:16all the anti-doping, it's just incredible. It's just a mistake of

2:23:16 > 2:23:24huge amounts. And talking doing -- talking to Amy Williams last night

2:23:24 > 2:23:29she said she would not even drink from a bottle of water if it had

2:23:29 > 2:23:33already been opened. She would start a fresh one in case something had

2:23:33 > 2:23:36contaminated it.Exactly right, anything you're consuming you've got

2:23:36 > 2:23:40to let your team doctor note and make sure they're B officials know,

2:23:40 > 2:23:44it is that simple.Bring me up to speed on the ice hockey as it

2:23:44 > 2:23:51stands. In the women's final we have got final everybody predicted?Yes,

2:23:51 > 2:23:54it is Canada against USA. It has been a wonderful tournament. We have

2:23:54 > 2:23:59seen other teams playing very well, just not quite to the level of the

2:23:59 > 2:24:02Americans and Canada, and as is usually the case is now going for

2:24:02 > 2:24:06gold.And in the men's?We're just working our way towards the

2:24:06 > 2:24:13quarterfinals and Norway came from behind to beat Slovenia, so, a tough

2:24:13 > 2:24:17day for Slovenia. And you've got the likes of Sweden, Canada, Czech

2:24:17 > 2:24:21Republic, they're waiting for their teams' qualification today.And

2:24:21 > 2:24:25we've seen some fantastic action in it already. I noticed at the end of

2:24:25 > 2:24:29the USA-Canada game in the heat, did you see the fight, in the women's

2:24:29 > 2:24:35game? It adds to the action! Fighting is part of it sometimes?

2:24:35 > 2:24:39Sometimes it is, you have got to push for every inch, but when it is

2:24:39 > 2:24:45Canada-USA, the tension is ramped up that it more. If you think it is

2:24:45 > 2:24:48going to be the gold game and it is going to be even more. And you will

2:24:48 > 2:24:53be part of that commentary team on Thursday. We're going to be heading

2:24:53 > 2:24:56off to Bobsleigh fairly soon, the first of four runs in the women's

2:24:56 > 2:25:02bobsleigh, with Mica McNeill and Mica Moore going for Great Britain.

2:25:02 > 2:25:04They have had an interesting time getting to Pyeongchang. Have a look

2:25:04 > 2:25:10at this story.

2:25:11 > 2:25:14at this story. One of the hard years that you've worked thinking, this is

2:25:14 > 2:25:18the Olympic and is, we want him to go into it in the best shape was a

2:25:18 > 2:25:21ball, and then it kind of gets stopped. It was absolutely

2:25:21 > 2:25:28heartbreaking. BBC Sport understands that British bobsleigh is set to

2:25:28 > 2:25:31withdraw funding from its women's team just five months before the

2:25:31 > 2:25:37Winter Olympics. Mica McNeill says she is gutted and shocked to be told

2:25:37 > 2:25:40by bosses there was no money left to fund her team because of an

2:25:40 > 2:25:45overspend.

2:25:46 > 2:25:49overspend.It was my career low, very, very low, as low as you can

2:25:49 > 2:25:54get. You've worked hard and it is crushed and you don't know if you

2:25:54 > 2:26:02can turn around from that.Athletes don't just give up, we really have

2:26:02 > 2:26:06to be positive and just put everything into it and think, there

2:26:06 > 2:26:14has to be something that we can do. So, just had to try.

2:26:17 > 2:26:19So, just had to try. Obviously, learning that we were not going to

2:26:19 > 2:26:24get our funding for the winter was very difficult, but I think that we

2:26:24 > 2:26:29instantly came together with a plan that we could move forward swiftly

2:26:29 > 2:26:32with, because the season was coming around very quickly, and I think we

2:26:32 > 2:26:40did that very well, and Nico put a lot of hard work into it.

2:26:41 > 2:26:44lot of hard work into it.I honestly didn't know if it was going to work

2:26:44 > 2:26:47and I thought we might get a terrible response, we might get a

2:26:47 > 2:26:51lot of criticism for setting this up, but we set it up and it just

2:26:51 > 2:26:58kind of started rolling. And I think it was day six, we hit 28 grand or

2:26:58 > 2:27:01something, and it was like so emotional, I just found myself

2:27:01 > 2:27:05shopping one day with my mum and she said, what are you doing? I just

2:27:05 > 2:27:16started crying, because everything was just so overwhelming.

2:27:16 > 2:27:18was just so overwhelming. Bobsleigh is such a small sport, you don't

2:27:18 > 2:27:21think that people are watching all looking out for your results. That

2:27:21 > 2:27:25people were willing to support us and help us on our journey was

2:27:25 > 2:27:31amazing. We want to say thank you for all your contributions to our

2:27:31 > 2:27:35campaign, we're a so grateful.We've had a good few days back on the ice

2:27:35 > 2:27:39and we are so excited for the rest of our season. We can't thank people

2:27:39 > 2:27:43enough McKenna some people would have put money in there and they

2:27:43 > 2:27:50might not know actually how much it does mean to our team.

2:27:51 > 2:27:53does mean to our team.At any major champs, anything can happen, and it

2:27:53 > 2:27:57is whoever performs on the day, and I think that me and Mica, what we've

2:27:57 > 2:28:01been working towards is getting that consistency and making sure that we

2:28:01 > 2:28:05can perform on the day.The Olympics, it's every athlete's

2:28:05 > 2:28:11dream, you know, it's kind of the highest level that you can compete

2:28:11 > 2:28:16at. And it would just mean, just to there is so special, and to be

2:28:16 > 2:28:20competing for a medal is absolutely incredible.

2:28:24 > 2:28:29We are about seven minutes away from the first run of four in the women's

2:28:29 > 2:28:34bobsleigh, and Nicola Minichiello is with us, who has competed in the

2:28:34 > 2:28:38Olympic Games in the bobsleigh and also Amy Williams, of course, medal

2:28:38 > 2:28:42winner from Vancouver. Did you get a good night's asleep?Not too bad,

2:28:42 > 2:28:50thank you.She flew in last night! Now, you basically discovered Mica?

2:28:50 > 2:28:53Absolutely and something I'm very, very proud of. The track that I used

2:28:53 > 2:28:59to train in in North Yorkshire, Nicola Tralee came along for a

2:28:59 > 2:29:02school taster day, saw her and loved her and really pushed her to get

2:29:02 > 2:29:08involved. Right through to the Youth Olympics. She is a huge talent and

2:29:08 > 2:29:12the biggest thing, mentally, she's a so strong and so determined.And

2:29:12 > 2:29:16what do Mica and Mica bring to each other, what would make them a good

2:29:16 > 2:29:20combination, they've clearly gone through an awful lot...? Actually

2:29:20 > 2:29:26just a word on Jamaica. Their coach left, what was that all about?A

2:29:26 > 2:29:35whole lot of drama about actually not that much. So, culturally, yes,

2:29:35 > 2:29:38she's German, hugely successful in her own right, she didn't quite fit

2:29:38 > 2:29:43into the team. There were some issues, a of tensions and so the

2:29:43 > 2:29:45Jamaican federation took the very brave step at this point in the

2:29:45 > 2:29:50Olympic cycle, that's not make mistake, virtually all of the teams

2:29:50 > 2:29:54are falling apart at this stage...! They took the decision to move her

2:29:54 > 2:29:57into a role where perhaps she was more suited and she could use her

2:29:57 > 2:30:01skill set, let's put it like that. And she decided that that was not

2:30:01 > 2:30:04what she wanted to do and she was going to create a whole lot of

2:30:04 > 2:30:09drama. She didn't own the sled, she never owned the sled, it is the same

2:30:09 > 2:30:13sled that they had been using all season, however she decided to go to

2:30:13 > 2:30:19the press and cry and talk about this ambassador.I am off and I am

2:30:19 > 2:30:25taking my bob with me!She made it her job to destroy the Jamaican

2:30:25 > 2:30:27team, which is really sad for somebody who has contributed so much

2:30:27 > 2:30:32to the sport. And Jamaica are women competing for the first time in

2:30:32 > 2:30:35this, obviously, we had them in 30 years ago! And also Nigeria, first

2:30:35 > 2:30:42time ever?

2:30:43 > 2:30:49Obviously these equipment will not be the same level as the Germans,

2:30:49 > 2:30:52the Americans and as, but they are here and competing in the games and

2:30:52 > 2:30:56it's wonderful to see. You want them to get down safely and you hope they

2:30:56 > 2:31:00all have enough coaching to be able to get down safely. Hopefully the

2:31:00 > 2:31:04bobsled stays upright and they get over the finishing line. It's not

2:31:04 > 2:31:08about them winning medals, it's about them inspiring a generation of

2:31:08 > 2:31:14young African children who say, they like me, I can take part and I can

2:31:14 > 2:31:17this. Maybe this is a possibility and an opportunity. This is the

2:31:17 > 2:31:21course they will have to cope with. From a driver's point

2:31:21 > 2:31:22course they will have to cope with. From a driver's point of view, where

2:31:22 > 2:31:26are the major issues, what is difficult about it and what do you

2:31:26 > 2:31:31need to do?It's not dangerous or particularly fast, but it's very

2:31:31 > 2:31:36technical. Velocity is key, going through the top level of the track.

2:31:36 > 2:31:42Curves one and two, it's open at the beginning and it's designed to throw

2:31:42 > 2:31:49them into the wall. Curves four is very different to the training.

2:31:49 > 2:31:52Keeping the Riedle this going. The next challenge is to come off curves

2:31:52 > 2:31:58nine and going to a bendy straight, ten and 11, there is no corner to

2:31:58 > 2:32:03it, but it is designed to knock your speed off. Downhill through the last

2:32:03 > 2:32:06two sections, this is where people were having problems last year, but

2:32:06 > 2:32:11they were trying to cope with the top of the track. Carry as much

2:32:11 > 2:32:14speed as possible up the hill through the last two corners. What

2:32:14 > 2:32:24sort of speed will they get up to? Around 125, 128 kph.Amy, you were

2:32:24 > 2:32:30watching the events unfold, and the track is very exciting and things

2:32:30 > 2:32:34can change. The athletes all seem to love it. There are flat sections,

2:32:34 > 2:32:37uphill sections, a unique track with always something going on. It's very

2:32:37 > 2:32:41technical. You can all get down safely in one piece, but it's how to

2:32:41 > 2:32:48get the speed from all those tiny details. We want to mention

2:32:48 > 2:32:52Humphreys, the pilot of the Canadian Bob, going for a third successive

2:32:52 > 2:32:59Olympic gold medal. She has topped the time sheets in practice. She is

2:32:59 > 2:33:02a double Olympic champion coming into this and coming into it you

2:33:02 > 2:33:08would have to say it's hers. But she has had issues with the track and

2:33:08 > 2:33:13hasn't really got into it.

2:33:14 > 2:33:19hasn't really got into it. It's a massively open field.Great Britain

2:33:19 > 2:33:27will go 17th, just before Jamaica. The ice isn't deteriorating as much

2:33:27 > 2:33:33here. It's not a disadvantage. The women's is capped at 20, in the

2:33:33 > 2:33:38men's they had 30.John Jackson and John Hunt in the commentary box.

2:33:38 > 2:33:41Looks like a decent crowd because there will be a Korean team going

2:33:41 > 2:33:46down, and they will be first on the ice. COMMENTATOR: Indeed, Claire.

2:33:46 > 2:33:51Welcome back to the Sliding Centre. We have had around four and a half

2:33:51 > 2:33:55thousand people here every night. Bobsled is the end of the evening

2:33:55 > 2:34:01action in Korea. Welcome back, more excitement absolutely guaranteed.

2:34:01 > 2:34:06The Koreans will be off first. John Jackson is with me and as ever has

2:34:06 > 2:34:14been keeping an eye on the important air and ice temperatures. The ice

2:34:14 > 2:34:17temperatures tonight are around minus eight. That's consistent with

2:34:17 > 2:34:21what we have seen and we know it is good for the British because their

2:34:21 > 2:34:28equipment works well in that sort of temperature. It's good for us.The

2:34:28 > 2:34:34action is about to get underway. The Korean pairing underway first. Kim

2:34:34 > 2:34:49and Tim. No relation. -- Tim and Tim --

2:34:50 > 2:35:00-- Kim and Kim. The pilot is Kim Minseong. They were on the 18th here

2:35:00 > 2:35:06on their World Cup event last March. They got a pretty moderate 5.66

2:35:06 > 2:35:11start that time. They are away to great roars. We will see if they can

2:35:11 > 2:35:17get under that. They will need to, the start record here is 5.2 five.

2:35:17 > 2:35:225.6 to suggest they will struggle to improve what they did last year in

2:35:22 > 2:35:28the World Cup when they only finished 18th.Not a great start

2:35:28 > 2:35:31through two and three. A little tap as they go through four and the flat

2:35:31 > 2:35:38section coming up. They should know the track very well but the limited

2:35:38 > 2:35:41time in racing this season is probably why they haven't settled

2:35:41 > 2:35:46into it. A great line in 212. This is the team that will put down a

2:35:46 > 2:35:52marker. Maybe the first two or three will struggle round it but once we

2:35:52 > 2:35:57get to the fourth and fifth sled and onwards, we will see the Afterburn

2:35:57 > 2:36:05is put down as the world-class pilots come down the track.

2:36:05 > 2:36:08pilots come down the track.A new track record, but we have seen those

2:36:08 > 2:36:14records fall regularly. A pat on the back for that. We will see shortly

2:36:14 > 2:36:21how fast that was with the likes of Humphreys, Meyers Taylor, and the

2:36:21 > 2:36:28Germans to come very early on. It was nice and clean. At the bottom

2:36:28 > 2:36:31was very good. A couple of mistakes at the top but it could be first

2:36:31 > 2:36:35round nerves. It's their first Olympic games, at that home games.

2:36:35 > 2:36:41It has the added pressure. This was beautiful through here, one of the

2:36:41 > 2:36:45best lines we have seen throughout the competition so far. It's

2:36:45 > 2:36:49difficult to thread that through the eye of the needle. The Koreans off

2:36:49 > 2:36:58to what is a good start. Kim and Kim. Next, history in the making,

2:36:58 > 2:37:04Nigeria. Not just the first from Nigeria to contest bobsleigher the

2:37:04 > 2:37:11Olympic Games, they are the first from Africa. Moriam Seun Adigun is

2:37:11 > 2:37:18the pilot with 25-year-old Akuoma Omeoga in the brake position. Moriam

2:37:18 > 2:37:25Seun Adigun was a former Olympic hurdler. Raised in 2012 at the

2:37:25 > 2:37:31Olympic Games. -- raced in 2012. They have gone a little bit quicker.

2:37:31 > 2:37:35A great start. They are very good athletes at the top, but it's now

2:37:35 > 2:37:39how she dries. She has driven the top of the track very well, but we

2:37:39 > 2:37:43can hear her cutting a bit of ice through the entrances into the

2:37:43 > 2:37:47corner. Working a little bit too much, driving out too fast and

2:37:47 > 2:37:52hitting the wall. All in all, just doing too much. You see her nearly

2:37:52 > 2:37:56hit the roof. It's not a good line, but it's because she is doing too

2:37:56 > 2:38:00much at the beginning of the corner. She isn't really an experienced

2:38:00 > 2:38:03pilot, which is why she's making these little mistakes all the way

2:38:03 > 2:38:07down. But for the first run of an Olympic Games, she just needs to

2:38:07 > 2:38:12settle into it.Not too bad, just getting a little bit ragged the

2:38:12 > 2:38:17further she has gone, the Dragons tale at nine and ten. It was scrappy

2:38:17 > 2:38:22thereafter, and she has fallen a second behind, Moriam Seun Adigun.

2:38:22 > 2:38:27The Koreans set the mark. Look at the joy on the faces of the people

2:38:27 > 2:38:31following them. Lots of Nigerian flags around. They are thrilled to

2:38:31 > 2:38:37be here, making a little bit of history.

2:38:39 > 2:38:42history.You would expect it from a pilot of her level and experience.

2:38:42 > 2:38:47Relatively new in the front seat. See how low she is, rising and

2:38:47 > 2:38:52touching the roof. That's not the line you need. A big mistake through

2:38:52 > 2:38:57the chicane. It's all these little mistakes that manifest into bigger

2:38:57 > 2:39:02mistakes, and then a slow time at the bottom. The Nigerian pair clear

2:39:02 > 2:39:11the track. Kaillie Humphries watching on. She goes forth, after

2:39:11 > 2:39:25the Olympic Athletes from Russia. Rodionova, and

2:39:25 > 2:39:30Rodionova, and her brake, Belomestnykh, who used to be the

2:39:30 > 2:39:38brake for Nadezhda Sergeeva.Again, the transition between two and

2:39:38 > 2:39:42three, and four and five, causing the issues. We saw that a little bit

2:39:42 > 2:39:45in the men's race yesterday. The athletes not getting a transition

2:39:45 > 2:39:49right and it's really tricky. Now she's building speed through the

2:39:49 > 2:39:55fastest part of the track. That tap will not help, a bit of airtime. But

2:39:55 > 2:39:58she is holding speeds to stay in front of the Koreans at the moment.

2:39:58 > 2:40:03But time is dropping away. Does she have enough to stay in front as we

2:40:03 > 2:40:07come to the flattest part of the track up the hill.Could easily lose

2:40:07 > 2:40:11out, the Koreans have a chance of staying in front. Indeed, Kim and

2:40:11 > 2:40:19Kim stay in front of the Russians and Nigerians. Not an awful lot in

2:40:19 > 2:40:23it, but Rodionova goes second at the moment. But some real quality to

2:40:23 > 2:40:28come over the course of the next half an hour. You can see how the

2:40:28 > 2:40:33track is holding up over the last few days. Even these sleds, some of

2:40:33 > 2:40:41the slowest in the field, are hitting close to 85 mph. That wasn't

2:40:41 > 2:40:48too bad down the straight. A bit of airtime coming into corner 12. She

2:40:48 > 2:40:51had to overdrive it, which would have cost against the Korean, who

2:40:51 > 2:40:55was really nice at that point. The Times are already quicker than the

2:40:55 > 2:41:00World Cup event of last March, when it was much warmer. Everyone

2:41:00 > 2:41:04watching on for the brilliant Canadian Kaillie Humphries. So many

2:41:04 > 2:41:10fascinating stories. The big headline for her is she is chasing a

2:41:10 > 2:41:13third consecutive gold medal. You will see that some pilots like to

2:41:13 > 2:41:18wear gloves and some don't. Kaillie Humphries is the only person to

2:41:18 > 2:41:22actual goggles, everybody else wears a visor. That's one of the

2:41:22 > 2:41:26differences between her and the rest of the field.Another difference,

2:41:26 > 2:41:32she has Phylicia George on break, I want for athlete. A finalist in the

2:41:32 > 2:41:39100 meter hurdles in London 2012. Her old brake Heather Moyse will go

2:41:39 > 2:41:47later with Alysia Rissling. They will go ninth, fascinating pairing.

2:41:47 > 2:41:52It's very quick out of the blocks. But we will see if there are quicker

2:41:52 > 2:41:56times from the likes of the Americans and Germans. Kaillie

2:41:56 > 2:42:00Humphries has been a little bit inconsistent. We have seen some fast

2:42:00 > 2:42:05Times and some sort of slow times. Has she been playing games? It's not

2:42:05 > 2:42:08a perfect line through there. But you can see the gap she is opening

2:42:08 > 2:42:13up over the Koreans. She will not be worried about them now, she will be

2:42:13 > 2:42:20thinking of staying in front of the Germans. But the bottom half of the

2:42:20 > 2:42:24track has not been great.That up to more than 82 mph. It's a new track

2:42:24 > 2:42:28record, half a second quicker than the Koreans. Kaillie Humphries is

2:42:28 > 2:42:34here and means business. Chasing a third gold medal. And that's a

2:42:34 > 2:42:38pretty good start.It's a pretty good start, but I think she should

2:42:38 > 2:42:42be quicker than that down the track. I don't think it will be enough. You

2:42:42 > 2:42:46can see her going through the track, some little bits overdriven. Try to

2:42:46 > 2:42:49get the muscle memory in there straightaway. Looks like she catches

2:42:49 > 2:42:55the sled... Maybe from the other angle. A decent marker for the rest

2:42:55 > 2:43:00of the teams to follow. But as a run as a whole, I don't think quick

2:43:00 > 2:43:06enough, but we will see.We will, and with some really good to come.

2:43:06 > 2:43:10Bendy 15 was perfect, that line up the hill is exactly what you want.

2:43:10 > 2:43:20Kaillie Humphries, one of the greats. Her campaign is underway.

2:43:20 > 2:43:31The Germans, Jamanka, waiting. And now, for America, Meyers Taylor,

2:43:31 > 2:43:35like Kaillie Humphries, one of the great names in the sport. She has

2:43:35 > 2:43:41won everything, every single big honour except gold medal at the

2:43:41 > 2:43:48Olympic Games. She has been a bronze and silver medallist, picking up

2:43:48 > 2:43:53silver in Sochi. A tremendous athlete, going away with Lauren

2:43:53 > 2:44:00Gibbs, a superb brake.The start record.Five point two to is the

2:44:00 > 2:44:04start record. Seven hundredths quicker than Kaillie Humphries just

2:44:04 > 2:44:09went. Meyers Taylor is on fire. One of the top starters all the time.

2:44:09 > 2:44:13The only team to maybe challenge them are the Germans coming up in

2:44:13 > 2:44:20eighth position. But if Meyers Taylor puts in a good run, and she

2:44:20 > 2:44:24has focused on the last few years on her driving, to be consistent.

2:44:24 > 2:44:27That's not a great line, but does she have enough speed in the sled to

2:44:27 > 2:44:34stay in front of Kaillie Humphries? She is starting to move away now,

2:44:34 > 2:44:40hundreds by hundreds. It didn't cost too much.She was 18 hundredths up,

2:44:40 > 2:44:46and she has increased its to 20 at the finish. Two tents up. Meyers

2:44:46 > 2:44:51Taylor having a storming run, despite seemingly making a real hash

2:44:51 > 2:44:53of the chicane just down the curve nine.

2:44:59 > 2:45:02Their equipment really works and it really likes these faster tracks,

2:45:02 > 2:45:08their sleds just excel, we didn't really see it yesterday because they

2:45:08 > 2:45:14lost so much speed at the top of the track. If she claims this up, she's

2:45:14 > 2:45:18got at least another two tenths is to find in the track. She has taken

2:45:18 > 2:45:23half the wall with her there, John! Yeah, and that used to be her style,

2:45:23 > 2:45:29and that's why she ended up losing the gold on the last run in Sochi

2:45:29 > 2:45:32and ended up with silver, for driving like that. She just needs to

2:45:32 > 2:45:37tidy that up because she doesn't need to worry so much about Kaillie

2:45:37 > 2:45:40Humphries now, it's her team-mate, but this is going to be great race

2:45:40 > 2:45:47over the next four runs.Next up, for Germany, Mariama Jamanka and

2:45:47 > 2:45:50with her, Lisa Buckwitz en brake. Number three in the world. Mariama

2:45:50 > 2:45:57Jamanka, an ex-hammer thrower.

2:45:57 > 2:46:00Jamanka, an ex-hammer thrower. She has not had a particularly good

2:46:00 > 2:46:05start, speed wise.If she gets this right, though, which... It shows

2:46:05 > 2:46:09that this equipment does work, she knows the track well. She finish

2:46:09 > 2:46:13fourth then and now she's getting through clean, so she could also be

2:46:13 > 2:46:17a challenge for the medals.Great run so far, everything looks clean,

2:46:17 > 2:46:24uses the exit of seven well to push yourself down. A little bit high

2:46:24 > 2:46:28there, though. Can she close in on Elana Meyers Taylor at this point,

2:46:28 > 2:46:33is she going to stay in front of Kaillie Humphries? It looks like she

2:46:33 > 2:46:36is now coming towards it, the Germany equipment really likes the

2:46:36 > 2:46:39speed at the bottom of the track. This is going to be interesting. Can

2:46:39 > 2:46:45she get within a tenth of a second of Elana Meyers Taylor? She's just a

2:46:45 > 2:46:47two hundredths off her. Again, mistakes through the chicane didn't

2:46:47 > 2:46:53prove costly. Mariama Jamanka is in this race for gold without a shadow

2:46:53 > 2:46:59of a doubt. What a consistent year she has had. We saw her finish top

2:46:59 > 2:47:03six in all eight races through the winter. She never missed a beat, and

2:47:03 > 2:47:07she's really on song, starting her Olympic Games as well. She is, and

2:47:07 > 2:47:11what a great start, what a confidence builder that is.

2:47:11 > 2:47:15JOHN JACKSON: The mistake that she made coming into exit nine, into the

2:47:15 > 2:47:21chicane, wasn't quite as bad as the one made by Elana Meyers Taylor, and

2:47:21 > 2:47:25that's why she managed to close up towards the back end of the course.

2:47:25 > 2:47:33JOHN HUNT: Kaillie Humphries in third place at the moment.

2:47:34 > 2:47:35third place at the moment. Waiting on the sidelines, Stephanie

2:47:35 > 2:47:41Schneider, for Germany. At next up, another strong American team, Jamie

2:47:41 > 2:47:48Greubel Poser together with Aja Evans. Aja Evans, from South

2:47:48 > 2:47:56Chicago. Jamie Greubel Poser, bronze medallist in Sochi.

2:47:56 > 2:47:59medallist in Sochi. And together with Aja Evans, Jamie Greubel Poser

2:47:59 > 2:48:04won the World Cup race here last March, where sheep eat Elana Meyers

2:48:04 > 2:48:07Taylor in an egg citing Phyllis Chan who is to say they won't be top two

2:48:07 > 2:48:17again here? Let's see how Jamie Greubel Poser can react. This team

2:48:17 > 2:48:21are either a little bit off the pace, and you would expect that, but

2:48:21 > 2:48:26this team are slightly more refined. They've working together for so

2:48:26 > 2:48:30long, the Americans switch their women around a lot on the brake but

2:48:30 > 2:48:35this is the winning pair from four years ago, so she is having a good

2:48:35 > 2:48:40run so far. Is this where she is going to open a little bit of over

2:48:40 > 2:48:44gap if she does not make a mistake on this crucial corner? Almost got

2:48:44 > 2:48:48away with that, but has she got enough in the tank to really keep

2:48:48 > 2:48:53the speed on at the bottom of the track, where these sleds like to

2:48:53 > 2:48:56accelerate? And she is closing in, so this is going to be down to the

2:48:56 > 2:49:02hundredths of a second again just Mariama Jamanka and Elana Meyers

2:49:02 > 2:49:06Taylor both found Goodspeed at the end...And Jamie Greubel Poser is

2:49:06 > 2:49:12very similar! She drops in a close third. The three of them separated

2:49:12 > 2:49:18by just seven hundredths of a second. We're in for another

2:49:18 > 2:49:21crackerjack I think he, John, just like the men's event.We certainly

2:49:21 > 2:49:26are. You can see now that there's three sleds lined up, just seven

2:49:26 > 2:49:30hundredths between them and there's still more to come down who can fit

2:49:30 > 2:49:34in between them. It really is going to be a tight run, and it will be

2:49:34 > 2:49:37like that until we get to the fourth run. Is it going to be the same as

2:49:37 > 2:49:42every other race that we've seen so far, where the medals are literally

2:49:42 > 2:49:45decided by who makes mistakes as they're coming down on that last

2:49:45 > 2:49:50run?Been really impressed by the standard so far. Next, we go for

2:49:50 > 2:49:55Germany, the world number five, Stephanie Schneider, together with

2:49:55 > 2:50:03brake Annika Drazek.

2:50:03 > 2:50:07brake Annika Drazek. Stephanie Schneider, formally a brake, injured

2:50:07 > 2:50:11the year before last, and in the World Cup last year funnily enough

2:50:11 > 2:50:15was ragged at the bottom end of the track, made mistakes into 14 and out

2:50:15 > 2:50:19of 15, so we will watch out for that.That is a team that I thought

2:50:19 > 2:50:23would start a little bit quicker than that, so may be that shows what

2:50:23 > 2:50:30form the Americans are in. This will be another good run, because she's a

2:50:30 > 2:50:33very experienced pilot, in some ways, but can make a lot of

2:50:33 > 2:50:37mistakes. It's just about how she gets down the track. She's been

2:50:37 > 2:50:43driving well, when a little bit long on eight there. But if she gets this

2:50:43 > 2:50:48right, again, just that little tap... But the German sleds like the

2:50:48 > 2:50:54bottom of this track and accelerate. Is she going to start closing it,

2:50:54 > 2:50:58like the others? Maybe not enough track to overtake. She was better at

2:50:58 > 2:51:0615 last year here. Can she improve like Mariama Jamanka hammered she

2:51:06 > 2:51:12has improved but not quite the same extent and she is in fourth place.

2:51:12 > 2:51:16And Kaillie Humphries, trying for this third gold medal, finds herself

2:51:16 > 2:51:22in fifth position within 15 minutes of the start of the competition!I

2:51:22 > 2:51:25think the Canadians haven't got that combination right. I think it is not

2:51:25 > 2:51:29their best line up, if that's what they were looking to go for. We'll

2:51:29 > 2:51:36see the Canadians next. Here's a further look at Stephanie Schneider.

2:51:36 > 2:51:40Only real mistake here, she just runs on top of the ice and almost

2:51:40 > 2:51:44touches the wood. You want to behind on that corner but possibly not that

2:51:44 > 2:51:50high.Potentially, medallist, Stephanie Schneider takes her into

2:51:50 > 2:51:57fourth place on her first run. Elana Meyers Taylor, the leader. Well,

2:51:57 > 2:52:04next to go over Canada, a fascinating combination. The young

2:52:04 > 2:52:13driver Alysia Rissling, but look who is her brake,. Ogilvy,. Ogilvy, a

2:52:13 > 2:52:19brilliant rugby player, fantastic cyclist the Canada Sigel was the

2:52:19 > 2:52:23partner of Kaillie Humphries for those two gold medals. She quit on

2:52:23 > 2:52:26Instagram, Alysia Rissling begged her to come and join her building up

2:52:26 > 2:52:33to these Games and Heather Moyse having thought about it said, OK, I

2:52:33 > 2:52:39am up for this challenge. A brilliant athlete. The youngster

2:52:39 > 2:52:42Alysia Rissling is daring as well, she went really well in Pyeongchang

2:52:42 > 2:52:46last March to finish fourth. They could be a surprise package. They

2:52:46 > 2:52:48certainly could, she has been driving well in training so she

2:52:48 > 2:52:54likes this track. And got through their clean. I was waiting for a tap

2:52:54 > 2:52:59on the wall but it did not come, she managed to get through there. At the

2:52:59 > 2:53:02moment she's driving really, really well. She's got form on this track,

2:53:02 > 2:53:06she likes it, the equipment works well, so this is nowhere the key

2:53:06 > 2:53:10part is, she needs to get this right. As she comes into this

2:53:10 > 2:53:13straight... And that looks like one of the better ones we've seen, other

2:53:13 > 2:53:19than Korea. Oh, that mistake... She nearly crashed into that corner

2:53:19 > 2:53:22there as she came out, that's not going to help her move towards the

2:53:22 > 2:53:26front, but is it going to be enough for her to get in front of Kaillie

2:53:26 > 2:53:31Humphries at the finish? That's going to be close. And she's sixth,

2:53:31 > 2:53:33a little bit behind Kaillie Humphries. So, the Canadians fifth

2:53:33 > 2:53:38and sixth at the moment. The leaderboard all about the Americans

2:53:38 > 2:53:46at the Germans -- and the Germans at the moment. That was a tenth slower

2:53:46 > 2:53:55than Kaillie Humphries. That mistake into 13 was not great. The start,

2:53:55 > 2:53:59she should have been better, she's a little bit over the top of its to

2:53:59 > 2:54:03driver there, she needs to be more behind it. Maybe that's her style,

2:54:03 > 2:54:10but as she comes down towards nine, this was almost a really good line,

2:54:10 > 2:54:16and then she made a mistake going into 13, where she tapped on the

2:54:16 > 2:54:19wall, I don't know whether we will get to see that, just on the exit of

2:54:19 > 2:54:24this corner... No. Almost where the back of the sled hit and they nearly

2:54:24 > 2:54:35rolled in.Next up, for Germany, 24-year-old

2:54:35 > 2:54:4124-year-old world number seven and silver medallist in the world junior

2:54:41 > 2:54:45championships, an ex skeleton athlete made the transition to Bob

2:54:45 > 2:54:48Slate a few years ago, Anna Koehler. Made far too many mistakes in the

2:54:48 > 2:54:54top half of the track from two to four. And she is driving the sled a

2:54:54 > 2:54:56little bit too much coming into the corners, which means she is working

2:54:56 > 2:55:02too hard with the steering. She's going to have to do a lot of work.

2:55:02 > 2:55:05But you can see how much difference in time there is compared to the

2:55:05 > 2:55:09other sleds, and that's because of her mistakes at the top of the

2:55:09 > 2:55:16track. They are just so costly and you just can't build speed up.And

2:55:16 > 2:55:19Anna Koehler not making much impression, really. There is a gap

2:55:19 > 2:55:25between Alysia Rissling and Anna Koehler, they're sixth and seventh

2:55:25 > 2:55:30but there's a cavernous gap between them. Four tenths, which in this

2:55:30 > 2:55:35sport is a massive gap. The front six are quite tight, then a gap to

2:55:35 > 2:55:41Anna Koehler and the others. That you would have thought gives Mica

2:55:41 > 2:55:45McNeill Mica Moore a bit of a chance of getting into the top ten. There

2:55:45 > 2:55:52aren't too many top-class acts to come in.Little mistake here, just

2:55:52 > 2:55:58coming into that corner late and almost like Nico Walther yesterday

2:55:58 > 2:56:09but obviously he tipped over.Next to go, the second pair from Russia,

2:56:09 > 2:56:12this is Nadezhda Sergeeva, number eight in the world, her second

2:56:12 > 2:56:17Olympics. She didn't really achieve anything at all at Sochi. Finished

2:56:17 > 2:56:24really disappointingly there. In 16th place. Her brake is Anastasia

2:56:24 > 2:56:32Kocherzhova. Now, last year at this track, that World Cup event which we

2:56:32 > 2:56:36refer to often, she was pretty ghastly after that she came in nine.

2:56:36 > 2:56:40It completely fell apart for her. Let's see if she's learned any

2:56:40 > 2:56:49lessons. Nadezhda Sergeeva on her way from Russia, and her start is

2:56:49 > 2:56:53OK, not massively explosive but OK. It certainly puts her in the mix at

2:56:53 > 2:56:56the moment with where she did is to be. Just a little bit of over

2:56:56 > 2:57:02driving in three there. You could just see the sled cutting guys.

2:57:02 > 2:57:07Seems to have settled into it now as we come into six and seven. Little

2:57:07 > 2:57:13tap there. -- cutting guys. Coming into nine she really needs to get

2:57:13 > 2:57:19this right. Over driving, sliding around, this is not really massive

2:57:19 > 2:57:22mistakes but it is just little mistakes everywhere which are making

2:57:22 > 2:57:27the time lead away. But she's still hanging in there relatively well,

2:57:27 > 2:57:29considering the German who just came down before her, making similar

2:57:29 > 2:57:34mistakes.It is better than last year for Nadezhda Sergeeva lady she

2:57:34 > 2:57:40goes seventh, half a second off the leaders.

2:57:43 > 2:57:49All shaping up pretty nicely. I can't really see, John, with that

2:57:49 > 2:57:53sort of speed, that sort of time, how the Russian Nadezhda Sergeeva is

2:57:53 > 2:57:56going to be a factor here when it comes to the medal chase tomorrow?

2:57:56 > 2:58:01Certainly not for the medals. I would suggest, you know, at this

2:58:01 > 2:58:06point in the competition, maybe is now trying to get top eight, top

2:58:06 > 2:58:11six... She gets very high there. You can see how much a steering she is

2:58:11 > 2:58:17doing, she almost handbrake turns it round that corner, just doing too

2:58:17 > 2:58:26much.Next ago for Switzerland is 33-year-old Sabina Hafner in her

2:58:26 > 2:58:32third Olympic Games, together with Rahel Rebsamen. Rahel Rebsamen has

2:58:32 > 2:58:38got a twin sister evil in who often breaks as well. Let's see now, world

2:58:38 > 2:58:48number nine together, despairing. -- twin sister Evelyn. Let's see how

2:58:48 > 2:58:56she goes... Her start is pretty average.Yeah, they're not going to

2:58:56 > 2:58:59be one of the best starters in the field but we know that if Sabina

2:58:59 > 2:59:02Hafner gets this right and all they could have a really good run. It

2:59:02 > 2:59:07just depends whether their equipment works. She is good pilot, she has

2:59:07 > 2:59:13shown for form in the past. We will see how it goes. Just ran a little

2:59:13 > 2:59:16bit high there and you do need to use the height of that corner to get

2:59:16 > 2:59:20into what a, but that was just a fraction too high. And that all

2:59:20 > 2:59:25we're talking about in these runs. -- into eight. Again it looks like

2:59:25 > 2:59:30she's holding on maybe for that sort of top ten position, top eight, if

2:59:30 > 2:59:35she can find speed at the bottom. Let's see... And seventh it is the

2:59:35 > 2:59:39Sabina Hafner. She found a little bit, Dinxi? To go comfortably clear

2:59:39 > 2:59:43of the Russian Nadezhda Sergeeva and just a fraction behind Alysia

2:59:43 > 2:59:48Rissling. , so the fair first run for Sabina Hafner, who seems to be

2:59:48 > 2:59:53talking to herself and gesticulating. There must be so much

2:59:53 > 2:59:56going through your mind when you just done a run of 50 seconds like

2:59:56 > 3:00:02that, John.

3:00:02 > 3:00:08That was a really good run. Just the exit of seven, just a little bit

3:00:08 > 3:00:11sooner. That wasn't so bad through there, just a little bit late. You

3:00:11 > 3:00:15can see the difference in the lines between the leading sled and the

3:00:15 > 3:00:21Swiss sled. Dropping at different points. That could be down to style

3:00:21 > 3:00:27or their equipment and how it works and how they fine speed in the

3:00:27 > 3:00:35track.Good start for the Swiss pair. The Austrians wait to go next.

3:00:35 > 3:00:40But before that, we see another Canadian team. The first Olympics

3:00:40 > 3:00:44for Christine De Bruin, the pilot, who only just squeezed into the

3:00:44 > 3:00:50games. At St Moritz she needed to beat the American Britney Rhein

3:00:50 > 3:00:57Bolt. She was in tears, performed moderately, but then the Americans

3:00:57 > 3:01:02performed even worse and those tears turned to smiles as qualification is

3:01:02 > 3:01:06guaranteed. Can she take her opportunity? This pairing is number

3:01:06 > 3:01:09ten in the world.I would have thought their start would be sooner

3:01:09 > 3:01:14than that. She did a bit of work in the first bend. Through the second

3:01:14 > 3:01:21bend, off she goes.

3:01:21 > 3:01:24bend, off she goes. This is the difference between a top pilot and

3:01:24 > 3:01:27one of her standards. It's just little mistakes. It could be the

3:01:27 > 3:01:34thing that costs her time on the run down. One of the best straits we

3:01:34 > 3:01:38have seen so far. It's good, but is it enough to try to build speed and

3:01:38 > 3:01:43pull herself towards the front of the back and see if she can get into

3:01:43 > 3:01:48the top ten? Will be eighth or ninth at the moment for the Canadian,

3:01:48 > 3:01:53Christine De Bruin, crosses over in eighth. She found a little bit of

3:01:53 > 3:01:57extra speed late on, which is encouraging for her future in this

3:01:57 > 3:02:06Olympic Games. She goes ahead of Sergeeva, just

3:02:06 > 3:02:12Sergeeva, just behind Sabina Hafner. The

3:02:12 > 3:02:15The defending champion Kaillie Humphries is currently in fifth

3:02:15 > 3:02:21place.Not a bad run overall, just a bit of mistakes. Both brakemen and

3:02:21 > 3:02:27the pilot running in. What a great shot, trying to get through that

3:02:27 > 3:02:30little gap between two and three. It tight to fit the big sled through

3:02:30 > 3:02:38there without clattering the walls. Deep into the second half of this

3:02:38 > 3:02:44first run.

3:02:44 > 3:02:48first run. The next for Austria, Christina Hengster and Valerie

3:02:48 > 3:02:55Kleiser. Christina Hengster at her second Olympic Games. So much

3:02:55 > 3:02:59experience and not too many years ago was one of the best in the

3:02:59 > 3:03:03world. However, this year results have not been great and she has

3:03:03 > 3:03:08dropped to number 13 in the world rankings. She has been up at three

3:03:08 > 3:03:16and four in her time. You wonder as the years to come by, is she

3:03:16 > 3:03:20struggling to maintain those high standards of yesteryear? She has

3:03:20 > 3:03:23been inconsistent. When she was riding the crest of a wave results

3:03:23 > 3:03:28were good. But she went to her home World Championships and she crashed.

3:03:28 > 3:03:32That seemed to knock her confidence from that point on. Making a little

3:03:32 > 3:03:36mistake at the top of the track, the same as the sled before her. We will

3:03:36 > 3:03:40see. She can either be really, really good or really, really

3:03:40 > 3:03:47average. That was a lower line into the beginning of eight. It's looking

3:03:47 > 3:03:53more like one of the average runs, the speed dropping away. Seven

3:03:53 > 3:03:56tenths back already. This is not a great run from a pilot of her

3:03:56 > 3:04:03standards.No. Christina Hengster through 15, and it will end in

3:04:03 > 3:04:11disappointment here. The top ten missed by a fair margin. She goes

3:04:11 > 3:04:1711th. With a few more talented athletes to come. Christina Hengster

3:04:17 > 3:04:25remaining a long way off her best.A lot of that was down to the start.

3:04:25 > 3:04:31It was a little bit off the pace. You would expect being two tents of

3:04:31 > 3:04:35the start, they would be at least six tenths off naturally anyway. She

3:04:35 > 3:04:40has lost a little bit in the drive between three and four and four and

3:04:40 > 3:04:47five. Coming in a little bit late and getting a little nudge. That's

3:04:47 > 3:04:53why she lost a bit of speed at the bottom as well.Meyers Taylor is a

3:04:53 > 3:04:57fraction ahead of Jamanka of Germany. Greubel Poser is right

3:04:57 > 3:05:02there. Schneider goes up. Kaillie Humphries in fifth. That's the story

3:05:02 > 3:05:12so far of the first run. Next for Belgium, Willemsen and Sara Aerts. A

3:05:12 > 3:05:16very clean World Cup run, but they have been hampered by slow start

3:05:16 > 3:05:24times. We will keep an eye on that as they push away.

3:05:24 > 3:05:28as they push away. Again, Willemsen was one of the top five in the world

3:05:28 > 3:05:33a few years ago and has slipped a little bit recently. A poor start

3:05:33 > 3:05:38again. What chance of you got?You haven't. The issue you have now,

3:05:38 > 3:05:44used to have some of the best equipment but it wasn't just a

3:05:44 > 3:05:47contractor to the Belgian team, so everybody has the same equipment

3:05:47 > 3:05:52now.

3:05:52 > 3:05:55now. So everybody dries relatively the same. It's hard for them to pick

3:05:55 > 3:05:59it up. But she is one of the most consistent drivers on the circuit.

3:05:59 > 3:06:04She goes through a little bit late, has to work hard. If she can get

3:06:04 > 3:06:07four consistent runs then you can pull your way back up the order. But

3:06:07 > 3:06:16she is holding on well here.Into 15, she should be tenth at the

3:06:16 > 3:06:24worst. She just faded back. In behind Sergeeva, just a heartbeat

3:06:24 > 3:06:35away. Willemsen goes tent here. -- goes tenth here. All in all, not a

3:06:35 > 3:06:40bad run, looking at the start time, she has overdriven it a little bit

3:06:40 > 3:06:46and really did well to keep herself within half a second, and this was

3:06:46 > 3:06:50one of the better lines through there. Not doing much work. She has

3:06:50 > 3:06:55a good feel for the front of the sled.Great slow motion shots. Look

3:06:55 > 3:07:01at the way the bobsled moves and wobbles around. The casing is

3:07:01 > 3:07:05presumably relatively light? Most of it is made of carbon fibre so

3:07:05 > 3:07:11doesn't way that much.Jamanka looking after her runners. Chatting

3:07:11 > 3:07:19things through, in a great position. The next for Austria is Katrin

3:07:19 > 3:07:24Beierl and Victoria Hahn. World number 19 together. Best run this

3:07:24 > 3:07:28year was fifth at Winter Berg. Only top ten finish. But 12 months ago

3:07:28 > 3:07:35here at this track she took almost every wall and corner with her, one

3:07:35 > 3:07:40of the most untidy runs. She started by smashing into bend number two.

3:07:40 > 3:07:45There could be a health warning with this run the.We will see how she

3:07:45 > 3:07:49goes this time. She looks quite high. Just manages to get away with

3:07:49 > 3:07:54it. Three was a little bit sloppy. But she just tabs on the wall there

3:07:54 > 3:07:58again. Hasn't been driving that long. It's one of those pilots where

3:07:58 > 3:08:04she can put in one good run, but can she put in four because of the level

3:08:04 > 3:08:10of inconsistency she will have? Into the Dragon's Tail, a big mistake,

3:08:10 > 3:08:17one of the worst entrances we have seen into that. That will scrub away

3:08:17 > 3:08:24any advantage.Katrin Beierl doesn't seem to have learned very much from

3:08:24 > 3:08:33the horrible run here last March. She is 15th.

3:08:33 > 3:08:36She is 15th. Only the Nigerian team are slower. A room full shake of her

3:08:36 > 3:08:44head. She knows it wasn't very good. -- a rueful shake of her head.That

3:08:44 > 3:08:49big mistake at the entrance would have cost her a lot of time. She had

3:08:49 > 3:08:53to work really hard to control the sled. Just little mistakes. This is

3:08:53 > 3:08:58the big one that cost her all that time. A little nudge that puts her

3:08:58 > 3:09:02into a big skid which sends her into the corner the wrong way. And then

3:09:02 > 3:09:08she works hard to turn it from that point and it scrubs off speed.Even

3:09:08 > 3:09:16the high five was quite half-hearted. Great Britain's turn

3:09:16 > 3:09:22now, good luck to Mica McNeil and Mica Moore on the break. The story

3:09:22 > 3:09:25is very familiar, funding pulled from underneath them last year. They

3:09:25 > 3:09:31went crowdfunding. Maybe most of you watching at home right now sent a

3:09:31 > 3:09:36few quid on their way. Nearly 50,000 was raised to help them be here.

3:09:36 > 3:09:42Their training runs have been pretty good.If they can get into the top

3:09:42 > 3:09:45ten or top eight region on this run then it would be a good first run to

3:09:45 > 3:09:50settle the nerves. They want a good start. The British girls on their

3:09:50 > 3:09:59way.Mica has only had ten runs, hadn't driven this track before the

3:09:59 > 3:10:03Olympics started. Their Achilles' heel will be the start. But Mica has

3:10:03 > 3:10:07been driving so well on this track. When she started close to the top

3:10:07 > 3:10:11runners she has been up there with them. She makes a little mistake

3:10:11 > 3:10:16there.

3:10:16 > 3:10:19there. She hasn't been to the Olympic Games before and is

3:10:19 > 3:10:22absorbing the whole atmosphere and embracing it. That's what's coming

3:10:22 > 3:10:26across in her driving. And that's one of the best straits we have

3:10:26 > 3:10:31seen. She is keeping herself in contention, but is it enough to stay

3:10:31 > 3:10:36in the top ten? Starting to pull herself back to the front. She has

3:10:36 > 3:10:43driven the track well. It's a good run.Terrific out of 15. She goes

3:10:43 > 3:10:48sixth. My word, despite the little knock at four and slightly untidy

3:10:48 > 3:10:55after and a slow start, what a good run that was from Mica and Mica.

3:10:55 > 3:11:00This sled is quick. The equipment is quick. They haven't got the start,

3:11:00 > 3:11:04but the reason the equipment is quick is because it is driven well.

3:11:04 > 3:11:08Mica is starting to become a really good pilot. They just need to find a

3:11:08 > 3:11:18bit more horsepower at the top and this is the reason they are flying,

3:11:18 > 3:11:23she has nailed the straight every time. That's one of the best lines.

3:11:23 > 3:11:26Five hundredths of a second off double Olympic champion Kaillie

3:11:26 > 3:11:30Humphries. A fabulous first run, they can be well pleased. They will

3:11:30 > 3:11:35be over the moon. What would be a great story is if they the funding

3:11:35 > 3:11:47marker.Another great story, 30 years after Cool

3:11:47 > 3:11:49years after Cool Runnings the Jamaicans, aiming to be inspired by

3:11:49 > 3:11:54what happened 30 years ago. And make the youngsters of the future

3:11:54 > 3:12:01similarly inspired. Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian has talked

3:12:01 > 3:12:05beautifully about the run they had earlier in the week. They have been

3:12:05 > 3:12:08a little bit disabled with the internal wrangling is. That's now

3:12:08 > 3:12:12has to be put to one side. We will see how the Jamaican pairing gets

3:12:12 > 3:12:20on.Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian is an experienced pilot. She used to

3:12:20 > 3:12:24compete for the US team and has won medals at World Cup level. She has

3:12:24 > 3:12:31got talent behind her, but she is starting to build a new programme in

3:12:31 > 3:12:37the Jamaican setup. A little bit long in eight. Can she get the

3:12:37 > 3:12:43straight right? Coming round the corner in was a bit too far, and

3:12:43 > 3:12:47that's why she had the tap. These little mistakes are costing time.

3:12:47 > 3:12:52Just dropping off as they come into the bottom part of the track.I

3:12:52 > 3:12:56think top ten looks unlikely. Maybe 12 or 13. It's gone slightly worse

3:12:56 > 3:13:07than that for the Jamaicans, nearly eight tenths off the pace. They go

3:13:07 > 3:13:10along side Rodionova, the Russian, joint 15th. Only two have gone

3:13:10 > 3:13:15slower. I think she will be really disappointed with that. They were

3:13:15 > 3:13:20hopeful they could replicate the seventh place of Winter Berg. They

3:13:20 > 3:13:23were, but the difference this week, they have had issues with their

3:13:23 > 3:13:29coaches. She slips on the handle, maybe one of the reasons she got

3:13:29 > 3:13:34excited going into the handle. She missed one and it caused her to fall

3:13:34 > 3:13:38into the bar, if you like. That shouldn't affect the drive, which

3:13:38 > 3:13:42was a little bit messy, but because they didn't have a coach, they had

3:13:42 > 3:13:50no eyes and ears on the track to help them find tune anything.

3:13:51 > 3:13:52help them find tune anything.Meyers Taylor, all smiles, she is the

3:13:52 > 3:14:02leader. The next to go, for Romania, Constantin,

3:14:03 > 3:14:07Constantin, and the brake, Andreea Grecu, she has developed into a

3:14:07 > 3:14:13fantastic pilot herself. But Constantin has the honour here. 17th

3:14:13 > 3:14:17in Sochi. Capable of a bit of a surprise.She is a really good

3:14:17 > 3:14:21driver. They just haven't had the starts they have needed. But when

3:14:21 > 3:14:27she has got it right, she could be one of the surprises in that top six

3:14:27 > 3:14:34or top eight area. But she has to have a perfect run. It's looking so

3:14:34 > 3:14:39good, so far. Building into seven and the big drop off on the exit of

3:14:39 > 3:14:48eight, as it starts to accelerate. Into nine, she nearly got away with

3:14:48 > 3:14:53that straight. Just centimetres away from perfect. Hopefully she can keep

3:14:53 > 3:14:58on building speed, stained in the mix of the top ten, top 12. Get the

3:14:58 > 3:15:04first run down and then settle into the rest. She takes 12th, the

3:15:04 > 3:15:06Romanians doing really well.

3:15:11 > 3:15:16The Romanians do really, really well, a bit like the two

3:15:16 > 3:15:2419-year-olds in the men's event yesterday.She should be happy with

3:15:24 > 3:15:27that, there wasn't many mistakes in that run at all. Just unlucky on the

3:15:27 > 3:15:33big she came to skim the wall, but this is where their issue is, it is

3:15:33 > 3:15:38just at the start. They don't have the most powerful of athletes on the

3:15:38 > 3:15:45sled, so that's why they're off the pace. Just there, that little skim

3:15:45 > 3:15:48off the wall just pushed them across, otherwise they would have

3:15:48 > 3:15:52had the optimal online into that corner.Looking happy. And rightly

3:15:52 > 3:16:00so, they've done very well. It has flown by, run one. We're down now to

3:16:00 > 3:16:09the last pairing. For Belgian, this is An Vennieuwenhuyse and Tony. Now,

3:16:09 > 3:16:15they've been hampered by slow starts for much of the 12 months just gone.

3:16:15 > 3:16:19-- and Tony. Their best World Cup finish was tenth. Last year, though,

3:16:19 > 3:16:23at this World Cup track, they were absolutely beautiful through that

3:16:23 > 3:16:31key nine and. A slow start, one of the slowest we have seen. And she

3:16:31 > 3:16:35also had a crush in unofficial training, then we first got here.

3:16:35 > 3:16:41She is one of those drivers who gets it right and is quick, or she's

3:16:41 > 3:16:45almost hitting every corner. So, it depends on what we are going to see

3:16:45 > 3:16:49from her on this run. It is looking good so far, but is this where it's

3:16:49 > 3:16:53going to fall apart if she doesn't get it right? She got it right last

3:16:53 > 3:16:57year.That is one of the best lines that we've seen through there, but

3:16:57 > 3:17:01she's just been over driving the top of the track and again, a little

3:17:01 > 3:17:06mistake. A lot of her deficit now is down to her start, that's all it is.

3:17:06 > 3:17:09The run has been relatively good compared to some of the others we've

3:17:09 > 3:17:16seen.She was 19th at the start and she goes up to 15th. And that is a

3:17:16 > 3:17:24tie with Kim, in fact. 0.72 of the lead.

3:17:24 > 3:17:38lead. Plenty of support for Sophie in the crowd here. So, that

3:17:39 > 3:17:44completes a run number one, and so pleased she did well through the

3:17:44 > 3:17:49chicane.That was a really good run, very tidy, the only mistake was at

3:17:49 > 3:17:5313, and that would not have cost her too much time. The reason why she's

3:17:53 > 3:17:57seven 10oz behind is just the fact that they were three tenths is

3:17:57 > 3:18:00behind on the start, so all in all she should be happy with that. And I

3:18:00 > 3:18:07think she will be when she reflects. That is run one done and dusted.

3:18:07 > 3:18:10Mica McNeill and Mica Moore in sixth place. Could hardly have asked for

3:18:10 > 3:18:17more. There is our leader, Elana Meyers Taylor. She leads by two

3:18:17 > 3:18:24hundredths of a second from the German Jamanka, who is right on her

3:18:24 > 3:18:27tail, with Greubel Poser in that bronze medal position again.

3:18:27 > 3:18:35Stephanie Schneider, Humphries and the British girls are next - run two

3:18:35 > 3:18:40to follow shortly!

3:18:46 > 3:18:51Everybody has to start somewhere. BBC Get Inspired will help you get

3:18:51 > 3:18:56involved and get active. Go to the BBC website to find our activity

3:18:56 > 3:19:00guides and activity find a. Enter your postcode and the sport you

3:19:00 > 3:19:08would like to try or just click search. So, where will you start?

3:19:08 > 3:19:16Get active, get involved, get inspired. And we'll be heading back

3:19:16 > 3:19:19to the Alpensia Sliding Center just after one o'clock when we are on BBC

3:19:19 > 3:19:23Two for the second run. Nicky Minichiello and Amy Williams are

3:19:23 > 3:19:26with me. Your reaction to the Great Britain women posting a time which

3:19:26 > 3:19:32is sixth quickest?Great start to the competition. We knew she has had

3:19:32 > 3:19:36it, she has really connected well with this track. We know the start

3:19:36 > 3:19:40is not up there with Elana Meyers Taylor, but she's a better driver

3:19:40 > 3:19:43and the combination, they just work really well and it is really

3:19:43 > 3:19:46exciting to see. Not the best start but still able to come back. And

3:19:46 > 3:19:51what did you make of it?Just brilliant, and the fact that they do

3:19:51 > 3:19:59get on so well, great chemistry together in the bob, only 0.25

3:19:59 > 3:20:04seconds behind so it is doable. To come down in sixth place in run one

3:20:04 > 3:20:08is probably better than they imagined, I don't know quite what

3:20:08 > 3:20:11their goals were.I think coming into it they would have been happy

3:20:11 > 3:20:15with top eight but considering how training has gone this week, we're

3:20:15 > 3:20:19looking at top five, top six.The athletes are always moving

3:20:19 > 3:20:24goalposts!

3:20:24 > 3:20:29goalposts!As soon is you get into top five, your goal becomes a medal

3:20:29 > 3:20:32China let's have a look to see where they can improve and what they will

3:20:32 > 3:20:35be analysing before they head out for the second run...So, the start,

3:20:35 > 3:20:41not the fastest at the velocity is good so there holding it.And by

3:20:41 > 3:20:44that you mean jumping into the bob when you're still going fast, rather

3:20:44 > 3:20:49than levelling out?Yeah, because as soon as you actually hold your speed

3:20:49 > 3:20:52you're actually starting to slow down. You want to keep that

3:20:52 > 3:20:57momentum. The lines are clear, there are very few mistakes. You can see

3:20:57 > 3:21:03she's just building all the way. It was a solid line and as we see on

3:21:03 > 3:21:07nine, she had one of the best lines of the competition. How much

3:21:07 > 3:21:11experience does Mica McNeill have of driving? She started in 2011, so

3:21:11 > 3:21:18just before the Youth Olympics in 2012 but at this level, not an awful

3:21:18 > 3:21:21lot, she's still developing.Their best World Cup finish so far is

3:21:21 > 3:21:26fifth, so they are legitimate contenders for a top five place at

3:21:26 > 3:21:30the very least, Amy?And a really good top speed, that is right up

3:21:30 > 3:21:36there with the best bobs coming down. I think this shows great

3:21:36 > 3:21:38potential and I really think everyone needs to stay glued to the

3:21:38 > 3:21:44TV to see what happens next! Considering how much Elana Meyers

3:21:44 > 3:21:47Taylor started ahead of her, and that differential at the bottom,

3:21:47 > 3:21:51Mica has had one of the best drives of the competition there. And as we

3:21:51 > 3:21:55have seen in the other sliding competitions, it is a driver's track

3:21:55 > 3:22:01not a starter's tracked.Yeah, it seems you can get away with not

3:22:01 > 3:22:05being in the top three offer start if you can drive it through the

3:22:05 > 3:22:09corners and not make mistakes, you can still get a medal.Let's have a

3:22:09 > 3:22:14look at the fastest crew out there from the first run, and this is

3:22:14 > 3:22:21Elana Meyers Taylor piloting the US team, with Lauren Gibbs behind her.

3:22:21 > 3:22:25Why are they so strong?Bobsleigh is down to three things. You've got to

3:22:25 > 3:22:31start - they're phenomenal starters. Elana Meyers Taylor in herself is a

3:22:31 > 3:22:34real athlete and together with Lauren Gibbs they get huge velocity.

3:22:34 > 3:22:39And they have the best sled technology in the world. And the

3:22:39 > 3:22:43driver, she's got better and better. The start and the equipment has made

3:22:43 > 3:22:47a huge difference, but that's not take anything away from her, she's

3:22:47 > 3:22:50training will jump in and this is now the only one that she doesn't

3:22:50 > 3:22:54have. As you can see, it's not as neat as Mica, she's not quite got

3:22:54 > 3:23:00the lines. If Mica had this sled and that start, she would be destroying

3:23:00 > 3:23:03absolutely everybody.I guess it is the confidence of. Mica has got

3:23:03 > 3:23:08almost nothing to lose, first Olympic Games. She's happy to be

3:23:08 > 3:23:13there, having gone through the season which was a bit troublesome,

3:23:13 > 3:23:17she's here, there's not really the pressure on her. So she can actually

3:23:17 > 3:23:20go a bit hidden and just perform without the huge pressure on her

3:23:20 > 3:23:24shoulders, and just maybe creep on up there and get confidence with

3:23:24 > 3:23:27every single run.Is their information sharing from the

3:23:27 > 3:23:31different sports? Will the skeleton team be sharing stuff that they've

3:23:31 > 3:23:34learnt about the track, about anything else, with the bobsleigh

3:23:34 > 3:23:40team?We don't normally, generally, however, there is some stuff that

3:23:40 > 3:23:45you are going to be talking about. But then we do drive it quite

3:23:45 > 3:23:50differently, we drive lines quite differently.Yeah, bobsleigh is

3:23:50 > 3:23:56actually more like the luge in terms of the drive lines, because you've

3:23:56 > 3:24:01got more control over the steering. So there will be some sharing but a

3:24:01 > 3:24:03lot of it is not really transferable.Let's talk about

3:24:03 > 3:24:08Jamaica. How did you think it went? Not great, the start was an

3:24:08 > 3:24:13fantastic. You can see she slips off the handle and it settles her, it

3:24:13 > 3:24:22takes her another three or four steps to get in,

3:24:22 > 3:24:25steps to get in, and Carrie Russell will be aware of that. That was

3:24:25 > 3:24:29proper damage.Yeah, it was just scrappy, so they will be going back

3:24:29 > 3:24:33and sitting down and analysing exactly how they make it better for

3:24:33 > 3:24:37the second run.They're 17th now out of 20, which isn't where they should

3:24:37 > 3:24:43be.No, it's not. They would easily have been looking at top ten, top

3:24:43 > 3:24:47eight, and really starting to mix it in there. So they will be

3:24:47 > 3:24:50disappointed but we've seen on this track, anything can happen. And that

3:24:50 > 3:24:54means they will go third in the second run, because they're going to

3:24:54 > 3:24:58go in reverse order. That will be shortly after one o'clock on BBC

3:24:58 > 3:25:02Two. Just to repeat, the British pair are in sixth place, the USA

3:25:02 > 3:25:08leading the way! And that is a very good first run! Now, the women's

3:25:08 > 3:25:123,000m relay has been happening in short-track speed skating, and the

3:25:12 > 3:25:15Netherlands actually set a world record time I winning the B-final.

3:25:15 > 3:25:21But they haven't qualified for the a final. This is not a baton as you

3:25:21 > 3:25:29would expect in a relay competition, and if you thought that short-track

3:25:29 > 3:25:33speed skating was chaotic and full of crashes, well, to be honest, you

3:25:33 > 3:25:42haven't seen anything yet. Let's see the A-final of the women's relay.

3:25:45 > 3:25:47They're playing some dramatic sounding build-up of music in the

3:25:47 > 3:25:51arena. I don't think we need it, we don't need any added drama for this

3:25:51 > 3:26:13one. Imposition two, it is Italy. And Korea going to the front of. Kim

3:26:13 > 3:26:22Boutin takes the first position for Canada. 27 laps Olympic final.

3:26:25 > 3:26:27Canada. 27 laps Olympic final. And away we go! And what a race this

3:26:27 > 3:26:31could be, the scramble to that first corner is taken by Italy, they have

3:26:31 > 3:26:33the early lead! Canada in

3:26:33 > 3:26:33corner is taken by Italy, they have the early lead! Canada in second

3:26:33 > 3:26:42place. And Marianne St Gelais pushed into the action early. China in

3:26:42 > 3:26:46third, Korea in fourth.And it's going to be a very tactical race.

3:26:46 > 3:26:50The Italians don't want to be putting the pressure on too early.

3:26:50 > 3:26:58And that's obviously why the Dutch completed that world record in the

3:26:58 > 3:27:03B-final because this will be much more of a tactical race.Korea still

3:27:03 > 3:27:09biding their time at the back. Pushed into action now is Kim Yejin,

3:27:09 > 3:27:12moving up ahead of the Italians into second place. And now, potentially

3:27:12 > 3:27:17into first. Canada are doing everything they possibly can to

3:27:17 > 3:27:25maintain their position at the front of the race. Italy suddenly find

3:27:25 > 3:27:28themselves at the back. And Kim Boutin is in second place behind the

3:27:28 > 3:27:36Chinese. And the Korean, Choi, in third place at the moment. There was

3:27:36 > 3:27:41no room, because when the change was made, they did well to avoid all the

3:27:41 > 3:27:49traffic around them. They're still tightly packed, all four teams! 19

3:27:49 > 3:27:53laps to go.The skaters are actually blocking any of the other skaters

3:27:53 > 3:27:59from coming up the inside on the exchange.

3:28:00 > 3:28:05exchange.For China, Li Jinyu on the front of the race. Still Korea in

3:28:05 > 3:28:12third place, second it's Canada. Valerie Maltais for Canada is about

3:28:12 > 3:28:15to make the change, and still, there's not much room out there at

3:28:15 > 3:28:21all. China leading at

3:28:21 > 3:28:23all. China leading at the moment, putting the hammer down and showing

3:28:23 > 3:28:31some speed, as change is made once more.I think the Koreans are just

3:28:31 > 3:28:37waiting for that moment to explode. Choi just tucked in behind the

3:28:37 > 3:28:40Chinese, we've always had China and Korea challenging for the

3:28:40 > 3:28:50gold-medal.Zhou Yang hands over to Li Jinyu joiner. In second place it

3:28:50 > 3:28:56is Canada and it is really hotting up, it is anyone's gold-medal.China

3:28:56 > 3:28:59starting to open a slight gap but the Koreans are stuck in third

3:28:59 > 3:29:05place, they can't get through. Have China really decided to go for gold

3:29:05 > 3:29:11and go for the last 12 laps?!There is a little bit of a gap back to Kim

3:29:11 > 3:29:16Boutin now. Choi is in third place, Italy struggling to make an

3:29:16 > 3:29:22impression, back in fourth. As one small, taken up for China and Zhou

3:29:22 > 3:29:30Yang. The gap is opening! Korea are still hanging in there with Choi

3:29:30 > 3:29:35Minjeong, who has got a blistering turn of pace. That was good tactics

3:29:35 > 3:29:37by the Koreans, Canada actually helped them to come back to the

3:29:37 > 3:29:44Chinese team. Looking for some space around the outside!Canada leading

3:29:44 > 3:29:47the way, there will be five laps to go as they come over the line! Owing

3:29:47 > 3:29:51to the front for the very first time, almost! China are still

3:29:51 > 3:29:59leading! Rear town in second place. Handed over to Kim Yejin! Four laps

3:29:59 > 3:30:05to go!

3:30:07 > 3:30:12The Koreans are right on the tail of the Chinese. Korea in a good

3:30:12 > 3:30:19position to potentially win this. Choi

3:30:20 > 3:30:24Choi Minjeong, you can hardly hear yourself think. Choi Minjeong

3:30:24 > 3:30:31leading the way. I think she should hang on to win. Choi Minjeong gets

3:30:31 > 3:30:46it on the line from Fan Kexin.I don't know what to say about that. I

3:30:46 > 3:30:50wouldn't like to be the referee who has to make the decision. When

3:30:50 > 3:30:54Canada went down, they took the Italians down with them, and it's

3:30:54 > 3:31:02short track and very mixed. What a stunning race. The Italians are left

3:31:02 > 3:31:06very disappointed with two of their skaters going sliding into the

3:31:06 > 3:31:09padding. In the closing laps. They have not been able to impose

3:31:09 > 3:31:19themselves at all. It came down to a big battle between China and Korea.

3:31:19 > 3:31:25What a race it was, what a stunning race.

3:31:25 > 3:31:28race.We have to wait until the official result. Everybody

3:31:28 > 3:31:33celebrating here. We don't know what the official result will be. I think

3:31:33 > 3:31:38it will take some time before the referee gets over to the video

3:31:38 > 3:31:43replay to actually decide what happens here. With so many athletes

3:31:43 > 3:31:48out on the ice at the same time, there is so much going on. A lot of

3:31:48 > 3:31:54emotion coming out. Tears of joy for some and disappointment for others.

3:31:54 > 3:32:00We can take a look at this once more.We can see Kim Boutin, the

3:32:00 > 3:32:05Koreans missing their exchange. They come back and exchange and they have

3:32:05 > 3:32:09to touch. But they took the Canadians down, that was the first

3:32:09 > 3:32:17instance.

3:32:17 > 3:32:21instance. In the exchange, the skater, 128, falling down for Korea,

3:32:21 > 3:32:27taking the Canadians with them. It will be very call.Basically taking

3:32:27 > 3:32:32the Canadians out of contention. Absolutely. It could well be Korea

3:32:32 > 3:32:37get a penalty after winning the gold medal, and that will move the

3:32:37 > 3:32:44Chinese into first place. And then I think the Italians got second. And

3:32:44 > 3:32:50that would mean the Canadians have third place. The Koreans are waving

3:32:50 > 3:32:54as if they have won the Olympic gold medal, but it has to be formally

3:32:54 > 3:33:03confirmed. There has been a penalty. Which way has it gone? It has gone

3:33:03 > 3:33:15very quiet here. Two penalties! China have been penalised, Korea

3:33:15 > 3:33:25win, and Italy end up with Silver! The Dutch, having won the pea --

3:33:25 > 3:33:33having won the B-final...The Dutch get a medal for their efforts

3:33:33 > 3:33:40without even making the final! Disappointment for China. Italy were

3:33:40 > 3:33:44despondent because they had a couple of skaters crashing earlier. Maybe

3:33:44 > 3:33:50as a result of that incident, actually. They suffered for it. But

3:33:50 > 3:33:55Canada have been penalised here. It looks to me as if the Canadians were

3:33:55 > 3:34:00impeded by Korea.Absolutely, I'm totally flabbergasted, I can't

3:34:00 > 3:34:04believe it.Plenty for everyone to digest at the end of this session in

3:34:04 > 3:34:08the Ice Arena. No wonder the Dutch can't believe it, they were not even

3:34:08 > 3:34:13on the ice and they have won a medal. That has happened before. I

3:34:13 > 3:34:22think it was Lillehammer, the bronze medal in the 500 metres after a fall

3:34:22 > 3:34:30in the A-final,...The Korean team will be beside themselves with

3:34:30 > 3:34:34winning but they will be mightily relieved. How nervous will they have

3:34:34 > 3:34:39been down there?You have 12,000 Koreans supporting here. To perform

3:34:39 > 3:34:45like this in your home country at the Olympic Games is astonishing.

3:34:45 > 3:34:53There is the final result. Korea are gold medallists in the ladies 3000

3:34:53 > 3:34:58meter relay. Italy winning silver and bronze goes to the Netherlands

3:34:58 > 3:35:03because Canada and China both penalised in the A-final and the

3:35:03 > 3:35:09Dutch won the B-final. Apart from that, nothing happening in the

3:35:09 > 3:35:13relay! STUDIO: The crowd there absolutely loved it. The reaction of

3:35:13 > 3:35:18the Netherlands when they realised they had the bronze stop silver to

3:35:18 > 3:35:22Italy and gold to South Korea for the sixth time in seven runnings of

3:35:22 > 3:35:27the women's relay at the Olympics. A great record. South Korea claiming

3:35:27 > 3:35:30three golds from a possible five in short track speed skating at these

3:35:30 > 3:35:37games. The medal table at the Winter Olympics now looks like this with

3:35:37 > 3:35:45Norway out in front ahead of Germany and Canada.

3:35:45 > 3:35:48and Canada. South Korea, four gold medals for them, and three of them

3:35:48 > 3:35:53have come in short track speed skating. Sarah Lindsay has joined

3:35:53 > 3:35:57us, Nicola Minichiello and Amy Williams. That relay, that was

3:35:57 > 3:36:02bonkers.The relay can be a crazy event and it's really hard to keep

3:36:02 > 3:36:06track when there is so much happening and so many skaters on the

3:36:06 > 3:36:10track at the same time with people coming on and off the track. It's

3:36:10 > 3:36:15fair to say the referees have been kept fairly busy at short track.

3:36:15 > 3:36:18They have, with a lot of disqualifications in the last ten

3:36:18 > 3:36:25days.And all for different reasons. We will look back at what happened

3:36:25 > 3:36:29to Elise Christie now. Her Winter Olympics is over having not

3:36:29 > 3:36:32qualified from the heats to get to the quarterfinals of the 1000

3:36:32 > 3:36:37metres, the event in which she is world champion. It has been a

3:36:37 > 3:36:41desperately disappointing day for her. Sarah, do you have any latest

3:36:41 > 3:36:47from the camp?No. She has been through a lot. I think today was a

3:36:47 > 3:36:57bit of a nail in the Coffin for her. Her last interview, we saw it was

3:36:57 > 3:37:02very difficult for her to reflect so early. But she has gone out and done

3:37:02 > 3:37:06an interview straight after the race and been honest and open, which is

3:37:06 > 3:37:10commendable.We will see that interview in a second, but we will

3:37:10 > 3:37:13take you through how events unfolded for Elise Christie. She made the

3:37:13 > 3:37:18decision she was fit enough to start. This was the heat at around

3:37:18 > 3:37:2510:15am this morning, the first start in the 1000 metres. She ran

3:37:25 > 3:37:28straight from the start, the impact on her ankle might have been

3:37:28 > 3:37:33problematic. She took a trip, clashing with the Hungarian skater

3:37:33 > 3:37:37and went down. She grabbed that her ankle straightaway, and she hit the

3:37:37 > 3:37:43right foot. They restarted the race. We were not sure she was going to

3:37:43 > 3:37:47continue. It didn't look likely, but she went over to the side of the

3:37:47 > 3:37:53barrier. Nicky Gooch was fixing her skates for her, the coach, making

3:37:53 > 3:37:58sure they were still sharp. When she restarted she took her time,

3:37:58 > 3:38:02essentially starting from the back. But in moving up through the field

3:38:02 > 3:38:07she committed two offences.I think her confidence was maybe a little

3:38:07 > 3:38:11knocked. Normally she would make a big move around the outside

3:38:11 > 3:38:17possibly. She made some moves up the inside. The first penalty she was

3:38:17 > 3:38:21given, she was disqualified for that the other day. I think that one was

3:38:21 > 3:38:26particularly unfair. She got up into a qualifying position and we thought

3:38:26 > 3:38:30she had got through and would have another couple of days to refocus

3:38:30 > 3:38:36and progress with her rehab. But unfortunately she was given two

3:38:36 > 3:38:39penalties and given a yellow card, which is almost unheard of, she has

3:38:39 > 3:38:46never received one before.This is the second offence.She was

3:38:46 > 3:38:50disqualified for that. It has gone against her again. This is the

3:38:50 > 3:38:57second.With one lap to go, she has heard the bell and is in qualifying

3:38:57 > 3:39:03position. She has held her ground. She is trying to qualify.Don't be

3:39:03 > 3:39:07too alarmed of the shots of Nicky Gooch carrying her off, that was

3:39:07 > 3:39:12always the plan shows she wouldn't have to walk on the skates. --

3:39:12 > 3:39:16always the plan so she wouldn't have to walk on the skates. It was always

3:39:16 > 3:39:20the plan to pick her up and carry her so she wouldn't have to walk on

3:39:20 > 3:39:24those long skates, because it's very difficult. This is what she said to

3:39:24 > 3:39:29David McDaid earlier.I did everything I could to turn it

3:39:29 > 3:39:34around. I had ligament damage in my ankle. Putting a skate on with that

3:39:34 > 3:39:38is not the comfiest thing in the world. We did everything we could to

3:39:38 > 3:39:45turn this around. It obviously wasn't meant to be.If it was any

3:39:45 > 3:39:49other competition, would you have been on the start line today?I

3:39:49 > 3:39:54would have been off for five or six weeks. I would have been in rehab. I

3:39:54 > 3:39:57wouldn't have got on with a World Championships, and it wouldn't have

3:39:57 > 3:40:00been my choice, I would have been told not to go on. The only reason

3:40:00 > 3:40:05they gave me the choice was it's the Olympics. The worst that could

3:40:05 > 3:40:09happen is I would damage it more. And it will have, I got kicked on it

3:40:09 > 3:40:13falling at the start. But that doesn't matter, I have trained all

3:40:13 > 3:40:20my life for this. It was everything to me. And it's done.I think

3:40:20 > 3:40:23everyone watching will think that you have got a hell of a lot of

3:40:23 > 3:40:30guts.Yeah, thanks. I don't know, I felt I owed it to Britain. I really

3:40:30 > 3:40:35want to get short track out there. It's such an amazing sport.

3:40:35 > 3:40:40Obviously at times it does this to you. Honestly, I can put my hands up

3:40:40 > 3:40:44right now and say I don't know why I got the yellow card. When I watched

3:40:44 > 3:40:48the race I was kicked on the start and fell over. I've never had a

3:40:48 > 3:40:54yellow card in my life. I very rarely get penalties. I went up the

3:40:54 > 3:40:58inside and on the video I went past the girl, so I have no idea. The

3:40:58 > 3:41:03only thing I can think, possibly the referee doesn't think it is safe I

3:41:03 > 3:41:07race with the ankle the way it is. He was encouraged me to get off the

3:41:07 > 3:41:13ice after the faller start. If that is the case then fair enough, I can

3:41:13 > 3:41:16see why he might not want me to race like that because it might not be

3:41:16 > 3:41:23the safest. But, yeah...We know how much work you put in, and you talk

3:41:23 > 3:41:26about putting short track out there. I think you have already done that.

3:41:26 > 3:41:33You are the world champion. How do you some of these games, because, I

3:41:33 > 3:41:38think it's fair to say, it hasn't really gone very well!LAUGHTER

3:41:38 > 3:41:43You would have to ask me tomorrow, I think. Right now I'm a bit

3:41:43 > 3:41:49shell-shocked. I worked so hard to come back from this injury. I think

3:41:49 > 3:41:53a thousand people wouldn't have skated with my ankle the way it was.

3:41:53 > 3:41:59I can barely... The only thing I can say is I can promise Britain I will

3:41:59 > 3:42:06fight back from this. I will come back for paging. And hopefully I can

3:42:06 > 3:42:13do Britain proud then. -- I will come back for Beijing.STUDIO:

3:42:13 > 3:42:16That's the attitude that has made her a world champion. It hasn't

3:42:16 > 3:42:21worked out at the Olympics, in Sochi and again in Pyeongchang. Coming

3:42:21 > 3:42:24into this game is she said it couldn't possibly be as bad as four

3:42:24 > 3:42:29years ago. I fear that it has been. I think it probably has been,

3:42:29 > 3:42:35unfortunately. She is strong. And she is planning on coming back. I

3:42:35 > 3:42:39can't see in a million years her finishing yet, she has a lot of

3:42:39 > 3:42:44business left on the ice.It seems harsh for all this to happen to one

3:42:44 > 3:42:48person, Amy?It does. And from that interview I'm surprised at how

3:42:48 > 3:42:52strong she was able to hold it together in that interview. To have

3:42:52 > 3:42:56downfall after downfall, it can psychologically break you. There is

3:42:56 > 3:43:00so much pressure as an athlete that you put on yourself to get a medal,

3:43:00 > 3:43:05let alone the other pressures where you want to do well to win funding

3:43:05 > 3:43:09for your sport. She said she wants to get short track out there to the

3:43:09 > 3:43:14world and to Britain. She has, and I think in that sense she needs to not

3:43:14 > 3:43:19be so tough on her self. I feel for her desperately. She said she has

3:43:19 > 3:43:24appreciated that support. We are heading to the BBC One o'clock news

3:43:24 > 3:43:30now. Winter Olympic coverage will continue on BBC Two. But Elise

3:43:30 > 3:43:31Christie's games are
