0:00:38 > 0:00:46Hello, welcome to a full day of coverage from
0:00:47 > 0:00:50coverage from the Winter Winter Olympics. If you're going to win
0:00:50 > 0:00:55gold it is not just about battling the course, it is about battling the
0:00:55 > 0:01:01elements. The first Monday of the Winter Olympics and if it is
0:01:01 > 0:01:09anything like we have seen over the weekend, it's going to be a cracker.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13She has been getting better as the day has gone on. She is tearing down
0:01:13 > 0:01:20the course. The first French woman to win the Olympic mogul.
0:01:28 > 0:01:36Gold in the luge. Red Gerard on whom all American hopes are pinned. Yes,
0:01:36 > 0:01:44revved.Red. You can be the favourite but you have to deliver
0:01:44 > 0:01:52when it counts and that is what he has done. What a win for the German.
0:01:52 > 0:01:58We knew it would be cold, but I don't think anyone realise how much
0:01:58 > 0:02:04the wind can get up. You can see the problem on gondolas, really
0:02:04 > 0:02:11struggling to be safe enough. Wind speeds up to are 45mph. The women's
0:02:11 > 0:02:16giant slalom had to be postponed and that will take place on Thursday. As
0:02:16 > 0:02:21well as the men's down hill. The women's slopestyle did go ahead, but
0:02:21 > 0:02:25many think it was a mistake. Nearly all the competitors had at least one
0:02:25 > 0:02:29fall. None could do their most difficult tricks, because of the
0:02:29 > 0:02:35conditions. We are lucky here in the studio in Salford, there is no wind.
0:02:35 > 0:02:40You can see what a problem it can be. Even right at the top I think
0:02:40 > 0:02:43competitors worrying about what might happen at the jumps and
0:02:43 > 0:02:49therefore being tense and with the snowboarding events whether
0:02:49 > 0:02:52slopestyle or half pipe, the best are completely relaxed and that is
0:02:52 > 0:02:56when they managed to do the cool stuff. But lovely conditions here.
0:02:56 > 0:03:07It is fap is fantastic. We will show row the women's slopestyle, Jamie
0:03:07 > 0:03:11Anderson of Canada was defending her title and we have a lot coming up
0:03:11 > 0:03:17between now and 1 o'clock.
0:03:21 > 0:03:29between now and 1 o'clock. Jamie Anderson defending her title. Also
0:03:29 > 0:03:37lining up was Aimee Fuller of Britain. And Laura Dahlmeier is
0:03:37 > 0:03:46trying to win the sprint pursuit double. Felix Loch finished out of
0:03:46 > 0:03:56the medals in the men's luge. Canada are there to the final of the mixed
0:03:56 > 0:04:02doubles curl. Ing. They will play Russia or Switzerland. Canada will
0:04:02 > 0:04:10hope for more good new in the men's mogul. These timings can change,
0:04:10 > 0:04:15because of the weather. Here is the plan.
0:04:41 > 0:04:50So let's look at the headlines so far. Canada have won their first
0:04:50 > 0:04:54gold with their figure skating team upgrading from the silver they won
0:04:54 > 0:05:06four years ago. The athletes from Russia took silver.
0:05:06 > 0:05:12Russia took silver. Britain's Laura Deas will be the one to watch in the
0:05:12 > 0:05:23Skelton, finishing first and second. After an up and down season, Lizzie
0:05:23 > 0:05:27Yarnold is looking nearly back to her best. She was third and fourth
0:05:27 > 0:05:33in the first two training runs. Which is tremendously exciting, as
0:05:33 > 0:05:38soon as they get on the ice, the I'ms don't lie and they have a --
0:05:38 > 0:05:46the times don't lie. It is great both Laura and Lizzie have got their
0:05:46 > 0:05:51kit right, they're in fantastic conditions and getting to grips with
0:05:51 > 0:05:55the track. We will talk more about that later. We are going to go to
0:05:55 > 0:06:00ice hockey shortly. But here is the best of what has happened so far.
0:06:00 > 0:06:11Switzerland against Jes pan. -- Japan.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Quick shot.
0:06:18 > 0:06:28It goes in! Something of nothing from Benz.It goes wide and then
0:06:28 > 0:06:34Sara Benz picks it up and Fujimoto does not expect this. She thinks
0:06:34 > 0:06:38Benz will pass it back to the point.
0:06:41 > 0:06:46Meier will walk into one and that was too easy. Simply blocked. Meier
0:06:46 > 0:06:53is in trouble in her own end. What a pass and a chance and a goal as
0:06:53 > 0:06:59well. Benz, second of the game.Look at presence of mind from Meier,
0:06:59 > 0:07:07firing it all the way to the blue line. This has just happened in the
0:07:07 > 0:07:12third period - Switzerland on the attack and that is Muller scoring
0:07:12 > 0:07:19for Switzerland. They lead 3-0 against Japan. That match is live on
0:07:19 > 0:07:25the red button. The big story has been about the women's slopestyle.
0:07:25 > 0:07:34Should it have taken place? Very difficult conditions. Jamie
0:07:34 > 0:07:42Anderson, the defend champion, they had their qualifying runs cancelled.
0:07:42 > 0:07:50. Ed Leigh is our man. COMMENTATOR: The women's slopestyle finals after
0:07:50 > 0:07:56the cancellation of qualifiers we have a full quota of riders, 26
0:07:56 > 0:08:00women dropping today. Instead of getting three runs and the best
0:08:00 > 0:08:07score counting, they will only get two.
0:08:07 > 0:08:16two. Klaudia Medlova one of trail blazers of recent years. She dropped
0:08:16 > 0:08:24first ever double rodeo. Big gap out on the double kink rail.
0:08:34 > 0:08:39Setting up for that final module. Into the first of the jumps.
0:08:39 > 0:08:49Super-corked. Goodness me.That was incredible. She got...She
0:08:49 > 0:08:55essentially jumped off the roof of a house and landed on her back.
0:08:55 > 0:09:06Whether that was the wind? It caught her board and stalled the rotation.
0:09:06 > 0:09:12Jessica Jensen dropping in.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Jessica Jensen dropping in. There is a very strong American contingent
0:09:16 > 0:09:23who have made their way into slopestyle.
0:09:23 > 0:09:29The Americans all qualified through their own Grand Prix series. Jessica
0:09:29 > 0:09:40got a fifth place there. Highest result this season.
0:09:40 > 0:09:46Killing speed into the ramp. The body language - both hands held out
0:09:46 > 0:09:54in front.This is I feel a bit... Nervous watching her. That was a
0:09:54 > 0:10:02nice solid switch 540. That is more like it. Into jump two. Now, keep
0:10:02 > 0:10:09your composure. Keep tucked in here. A big backside 720. First place.
0:10:09 > 0:10:14Definitely first place. We haven't seen a run completed over all three
0:10:14 > 0:10:19kickers.
0:10:20 > 0:10:30kickers.First place, easy.Aimee Fuller is about to drop. The rider
0:10:30 > 0:10:37who burst on to the scene with her incredible double black flip and the
0:10:37 > 0:10:43cab double under. Been getting to grips with this course throughout
0:10:43 > 0:10:52training. The 50/50 on that big down rail.Come on Aimee, Fuller. Coming
0:10:52 > 0:11:00off early on the kink rail.
0:11:00 > 0:11:06The results she has been pushing, a top 10 would be a good result for
0:11:06 > 0:11:13Aimee today.Speed is her friend here. The under flip. That is the
0:11:13 > 0:11:21single version there. Didn't feel like she had the speed. You can
0:11:21 > 0:11:27almost hear her say, it's so windy. You can see the wind socks
0:11:27 > 0:11:34horizontal on that second kicker. Just making it over the small side.
0:11:34 > 0:11:43Again wind an issue. It is a shame for Aimee.
0:11:46 > 0:11:50for Aimee.Pray the wind stops. You can hear her saying, waiting for the
0:11:50 > 0:12:04wind to stop. Back up to the top.
0:12:06 > 0:12:12Nornedahl is a very tidy competitor. Really difficult switch grind
0:12:12 > 0:12:22through the kink 180 out.Super technical on the kink rail. She got
0:12:22 > 0:12:30three X games medals in a row. Switching to this first jump. Coming
0:12:30 > 0:12:39up a little short. Needs to tuck in. No speed checks.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41No speed checks.Front side 360 clears it, despite losing her
0:12:41 > 0:12:48composure. Backside 720 and you see the fist of the rider -- first of
0:12:48 > 0:12:53the riders, she has got the control and able maybe not in the prettiest
0:12:53 > 0:13:04way, but she has made it through comfortably.
0:13:04 > 0:13:13comfortably. 73.91, she moves ahead of Jessica Jensen.
0:13:13 > 0:13:19Here is a rider who thinks this competition shouldn't have run in
0:13:19 > 0:13:24these conditions. But pound for pound the bet slopestyle rider in
0:13:24 > 0:13:31the world. Last year she landed the best run anyone has seen by a woman
0:13:31 > 0:13:37in slopestyle. Let's see what she has got. 270 to front side board
0:13:37 > 0:13:44side opt on the end of the double kink. She is going without a jacket.
0:13:44 > 0:13:53So thinking about the wind. Looking very good from Gasser.Cap double
0:13:53 > 0:14:06under flip. That is how you do it. Oh, my goodness! She wants this.
0:14:06 > 0:14:14Sent it huge there. She got the big trick out of the way early. She
0:14:14 > 0:14:19adopted the Hayley Lang land approach, it is just watch this.
0:14:19 > 0:14:27Heroic effort from Anna Gasser though. She has dominated women's
0:14:27 > 0:14:34slopestyle for the last decade and knocked Jenny Jones off her perch
0:14:34 > 0:14:40back in 2012. If anyone can ride this course and find a way around
0:14:40 > 0:14:48the wind it will be this woman. The reigning Olympic champion. The gold
0:14:48 > 0:14:52medallist at X Games, Jamie Anderson.
0:14:58 > 0:15:00Just when you think she will hang up her
0:15:00 > 0:15:02Just when you think she will hang up her snowboarding boots, she finds
0:15:02 > 0:15:09new tricks. Look at that, liquid snowboarding. It is an absolutely
0:15:09 > 0:15:15different league through the rails. So, so stylish, so smooth.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18Confidence and experience shining through, but what will it look like
0:15:18 > 0:15:26here?Massive.Oh my goodness, legs forged from steel. Boxed clever
0:15:26 > 0:15:34there. Opened up, I think that was going to be a double under. Look at
0:15:34 > 0:15:41that! That's exactly what we said. The experience, the confidence, and
0:15:41 > 0:15:45the trust in her tricks, the ability to understand, spatial awareness
0:15:45 > 0:15:50that every point. And she knows it wasn't pretty all the way through.
0:15:50 > 0:15:57That wasn't pretty but experience got her through it. 83 the Jamie
0:15:57 > 0:16:03Anderson. A big smile for her there and a very, very well deserved gold
0:16:03 > 0:16:11medal position after the first run. So good to see.Very good to see.
0:16:11 > 0:16:16The Americans sitting in gold and bronze. Ladies slopestyle after the
0:16:16 > 0:16:25first run, Jamie Anderson, Silje Norendal and Jessika Jenson in the
0:16:25 > 0:16:30medal positions but a lottery after that. Second runs here at the Fina
0:16:30 > 0:16:36's Park venue for all of the freestyle events.A few of the
0:16:36 > 0:16:45windsock.Like a basking shark. You can see, not a cloud in the air,
0:16:45 > 0:16:49this is snow being blown off the hill. More than 45 kilometres of
0:16:49 > 0:16:56dusts. Jamie Nicholls, good to have you back. Aimee Fuller says let's do
0:16:56 > 0:17:06this. So, certainly at the moment the wind socks saying it's good.
0:17:06 > 0:17:14Let's see how she can go on these rails. 50-50 all the way to the end
0:17:14 > 0:17:20there, great start.
0:17:20 > 0:17:26Nice all the way through the double kink.Nose pressed on the final
0:17:26 > 0:17:33section. And through the rails nice and smooth. Snapped that backside
0:17:33 > 0:17:38180 around.
0:17:39 > 0:17:48180 around.Good crab.Come on, AimeePumping into this. -- good
0:17:48 > 0:17:58grab. Through the 360. Now just the last jump. Again, gone huge. Oooh!I
0:17:58 > 0:18:06hope she's OK. What a shame, too speed.That picture says it all.
0:18:06 > 0:18:12There is a snowstorm, a blizzard almost happening down at the bottom.
0:18:12 > 0:18:23Crazy.You can see a spiral of snow on a mini tornado. Next up, Hailey
0:18:23 > 0:18:30Langland. The girl who said you can't judge a book by it's cover but
0:18:30 > 0:18:37you can judge a snowboarder by their method is on course. There is that
0:18:37 > 0:18:43lovely r around, tapping the corner of the close out rail.No one else
0:18:43 > 0:18:48doing that. Not as tidy as she would have wanted to be on the double
0:18:48 > 0:18:53kink. Almost surfing into that feature.Nice.Nothing functional
0:18:53 > 0:19:05about it. That lovely double grab through the 360. Come on Hailey
0:19:05 > 0:19:15Just made it over the knuckles. She has enough speed...Yes.Look at how
0:19:15 > 0:19:21stoked she is. The Americans cheering very, very justifiably. One
0:19:21 > 0:19:28of the smallest and lightest riders in the field has landed a full run.
0:19:28 > 0:19:32Do you think its top three? Definitely top three for me. The
0:19:32 > 0:19:40only question is if it is a gold medal. I don't think it's gold. I
0:19:40 > 0:19:48think, I actually think it might be silver.Oooh, just.Fourth place!
0:19:48 > 0:19:54That's a shame. So, Jessika Jenson stays in third
0:19:54 > 0:20:04place. Laurie Blouin, the Canadian. She has the double nine as well.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07Interestingly, I don't think it's about your best tricks here. It's
0:20:07 > 0:20:11about what can you put together under the circumstances, what is
0:20:11 > 0:20:17your best stock run? Interesting comparing Hailey Langland with
0:20:17 > 0:20:26Laurie Blouin. Hailey Langland with fluid between each feature. -- was
0:20:26 > 0:20:32fluid between each feature.Nice. Sitting back a tiny bit. This is
0:20:32 > 0:20:37where it counts, though.Has held on. Just making it over the
0:20:37 > 0:20:41knuckles.
0:20:41 > 0:20:51Into the last jump. Switch... Yes, got it.
0:20:57 > 0:21:03There you go, second.Look at the black eye sustained in training.
0:21:03 > 0:21:11Second place. Next in, one of the riders who really was not happy
0:21:11 > 0:21:16about this course after the first run, Enni Rukajarvi. Silver
0:21:16 > 0:21:22medallist in Sochi.Keep it simple. Is that your advice?I think so, on
0:21:22 > 0:21:26a day like today, I think it is best to keep it simple. That lovely
0:21:26 > 0:21:32rainbow transition tuck on the broadside and then coming through
0:21:32 > 0:21:42the hardest section. Backside 180. Perfect.Really, really nice. Come
0:21:42 > 0:21:51on Enni. Using the classic line and the Finnish mended. Dropping right
0:21:51 > 0:21:57for the take-off. Lovely.
0:21:57 > 0:22:02for the take-off. Lovely. Cab 540. She has gone big, backside 520. This
0:22:02 > 0:22:11is good! Frontside 360, goes smart and bounces off the knuckle, on the
0:22:11 > 0:22:18spot, on the spot, where is that?I don't know!Currently bronze medal
0:22:18 > 0:22:25position. I think Silje knows that's the end of her medal hopes. She
0:22:25 > 0:22:34slots into third position. Anna Gasser As ridden in four contest and
0:22:34 > 0:22:41won all of them. Ten months ago at the US Open, she lay down the best
0:22:41 > 0:22:46slopestyle run we have ever seen in women snowboarding. What can she do
0:22:46 > 0:22:52today? There is no question she has the tricks.I think she should,
0:22:52 > 0:22:58either she does the cab under and plays it safe... I still think a
0:22:58 > 0:23:02good chance of making the podium. Blazing through the rail section.
0:23:02 > 0:23:13That is so good.Picking up speed. Half cab.Such a hard line, doing
0:23:13 > 0:23:19the 180 and switching to the edge quickly to get on the Braille.A
0:23:19 > 0:23:25single...
0:23:25 > 0:23:34single... Frontside 720 and she has gone huge.Oh my gosh! That is just
0:23:34 > 0:23:40so annoying. One of the best slopestyle riders there is.So
0:23:40 > 0:23:45another rider who again has the firepower of tricks to take this
0:23:45 > 0:23:54down. Julia Marino currently in 11th place. In the world rankings only
0:23:54 > 0:24:02one spot behind Jamie Anderson, currently in second.Very smooth.So
0:24:02 > 0:24:08smooth. Lovely 50-50 to frontside 360.I think that is up there, one
0:24:08 > 0:24:17of the best top sections.Frontside 720. Clipped the knuckle. Jamie
0:24:17 > 0:24:25Anderson knows that she has claimed a second consecutive Olympic gold
0:24:25 > 0:24:32medal. Look at that!Enjoy it.It's the one thing I would say, you know
0:24:32 > 0:24:37what, silver and bronze, they could have gone anywhere, but Jamie
0:24:37 > 0:24:41Anderson, the cream has risen to the top of the slopestyle today, against
0:24:41 > 0:24:48the odds... Against the conditions, she managed to land the run and she
0:24:48 > 0:24:56wanted to do and her experience has told. Look at it.She's waiting.
0:24:56 > 0:25:01Maybe she does want to do something good and not just ride down. I hope
0:25:01 > 0:25:09she goes down and does methods of everything.Let's have a look.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13Lovely first rail. The only rider transferring from the big kick into
0:25:13 > 0:25:23the landing.So smooth.Liquid snowboarding! CHUCKLES
0:25:23 > 0:25:27All of these, it is muscle memory, isn't it, with Jamie Anderson
0:25:27 > 0:25:36question up lovely switch backside 180.Oh no.And you think why, why
0:25:36 > 0:25:46did you biscuit?Yeah. -- why did you risk it?Exposing to the wind
0:25:46 > 0:25:51even more with the board. She must be so happy, especially in these
0:25:51 > 0:25:59conditions as well.Tripod over the knuckle. Jamie Anderson rounds out
0:25:59 > 0:26:05the women's slopestyle final here and her boyfriend, the Canadian
0:26:05 > 0:26:08slopestyle rider is the first in the area to congratulate her. Jamie
0:26:08 > 0:26:16Anderson crowns what has been a very well decorated career, with a second
0:26:16 > 0:26:26gold medal.Unreal.That tells more of today's story than the finish
0:26:26 > 0:26:30area. The wind whistling through this half pipe course. The courage
0:26:30 > 0:26:36of the women should be saluted. Jamie Anderson, Laurie Blouin and
0:26:36 > 0:26:40Enni Rukajarvi taking gold, silver and bronze.
0:26:40 > 0:26:43Enni Rukajarvi taking gold, silver and bronze. Jamie, double Olympic
0:26:43 > 0:26:48champion, how does that feel? Honestly, it feels insane. I of
0:26:48 > 0:26:53course believe in myself and have dreams and goals but the level of
0:26:53 > 0:26:55riding has changed so much in the last couple of years, it wasn't
0:26:55 > 0:27:01nearly as much... In Sochi I knew I had a really good chance. Here I was
0:27:01 > 0:27:05like, I have no idea. There are so many girls who could land a run and
0:27:05 > 0:27:11win this contest. Just let it go.At the end of the day at the Olympic
0:27:11 > 0:27:14final and everyone wanted to ride. It's not how I would have expected
0:27:14 > 0:27:19on how I planned and how I'd plagiarised four years of prep work
0:27:19 > 0:27:24to go into today. I think if you were lucky with the wind, there were
0:27:24 > 0:27:29some calm windows, but the majority of it was super inconsistent. I
0:27:29 > 0:27:34don't think it was a true show of women's female slopestyle, which is
0:27:34 > 0:27:38a real shame for our sport at the end of the day we have big air next
0:27:38 > 0:27:43week. Have to pick ourselves back up is Bastareaud, have a good rest and
0:27:43 > 0:27:46recovery.-- pick ourselves up and stay strong.
0:27:46 > 0:27:50Almost terrifying to watch. Ben is alongside me along with Chemmy
0:27:50 > 0:27:55Alcott. Then went to two games with his snowboard. Have you ever seen
0:27:55 > 0:27:58conditions quite that tricky? We always had to deal with the warmer
0:27:58 > 0:28:03climates in Sochi and Vancouver. Obviously it is a lot here in pond
0:28:03 > 0:28:08Pyeongchang but the wind is the big...The shame of it if they
0:28:08 > 0:28:11weren't given the chance to show what women's slopestyle is all
0:28:11 > 0:28:15about.They are all saying it has progressed so much in the last four
0:28:15 > 0:28:18years, this is where one time to show the world what they can do but
0:28:18 > 0:28:22they weren't able to do that. It was not a test of skill but a test of
0:28:22 > 0:28:27courage but the best girls did win. Even so, Jamie Anderson, brilliant
0:28:27 > 0:28:31as she is, first woman to defend her title, it almost seemed like she was
0:28:31 > 0:28:36dialling it back, as they say.I think a lot of the girls were
0:28:36 > 0:28:40holding back purely to just stay on their feet. You can really tell with
0:28:40 > 0:28:44some of the runs they were affected by the wind. It is almost as if
0:28:44 > 0:28:49someone was tugging them back. Obviously they weren't clearing the
0:28:49 > 0:28:53landings. Sometimes they were overshooting. The wind was playing a
0:28:53 > 0:28:58big part. They wear these big baggy clothes and acts as a parachute,
0:28:58 > 0:29:02doesn't it? Sometimes they are just pulling out of it...Only nine out
0:29:02 > 0:29:10of the 52 girls managed to land a run.Nine out of 52 runs.Yes,
0:29:10 > 0:29:14mental. Look at the height. It must be terrifying when you suddenly get
0:29:14 > 0:29:19a gust and you are up there. These guys have done this most of their
0:29:19 > 0:29:22lives, so they know what speed is required to clear these jumps. For
0:29:22 > 0:29:27them to get it so wrong shows how much wind there actually is. We
0:29:27 > 0:29:31can't see wind, we just use the flags as a guidance as to either put
0:29:31 > 0:29:36on the brakes a little bit or two gunmen it.The Olympic organisers
0:29:36 > 0:29:40defended it saying they didn't believe it was dangerous. There are
0:29:40 > 0:29:43some athletes who were injured and badly injured in qualification or in
0:29:43 > 0:29:46training for this because qualification was cancelled, who
0:29:46 > 0:29:50said they should never have happened.
0:29:50 > 0:29:55It is really tough. It is up to the riders to speak up in times like
0:29:55 > 0:30:01this. A few of them are upset that it did go ahead. There is a meeting
0:30:01 > 0:30:06before the start to say, does everyone agree it should take part
0:30:06 > 0:30:13and no one spoke up.Like Aimee was saying, that they had a meeting, the
0:30:13 > 0:30:17winds died down and that was the go ahead. But they ended up picking up
0:30:17 > 0:30:24again.Here is Aimee Fuller's run. She didn't get a lot of chance to
0:30:24 > 0:30:30practice. She gets her shot in the final, what happens? Here we are,
0:30:30 > 0:30:35the top section is quite good. She got the rail features good. But then
0:30:35 > 0:30:39here obviously she just... Completely got taken out by the
0:30:39 > 0:30:45wind. Over shot the jump and you can see it tilting her on her wrong
0:30:45 > 0:30:52axis. The first thing to hit the floor looked like her hip. There was
0:30:52 > 0:31:00no coming back from that. No, it is an invisible assassin, the wind.
0:31:00 > 0:31:05Jamie Jones won bronze in Sochi and is there this Pyeongchang. Good
0:31:05 > 0:31:10evening to you. How would you sum up that competition and what we saw
0:31:10 > 0:31:20today?It was just a shame. These girls are such good snowboarders and
0:31:20 > 0:31:25the level is so high now and that didn't get shown today, because of
0:31:25 > 0:31:31the wind and the conditions. It simply is so gusty, the wind. You
0:31:31 > 0:31:36can ride when there is a tail wind or a constant wind. But this was
0:31:36 > 0:31:44gusting in and out. I'm ju gutted for the girls. They have trained for
0:31:44 > 0:31:51four years for this and they get just a two-run final. It was I guess
0:31:51 > 0:31:57pot luck.In your view was it too dangerous. Should they have
0:31:57 > 0:32:03postponed today? It's so hard to say. When you're not up there and
0:32:03 > 0:32:10riding yourself. To me, it looked... It did look dangerous to me. When
0:32:10 > 0:32:14they initially started that training, there was a little window
0:32:14 > 0:32:18of opportunity, you could see the wind socks had died down slightly
0:32:18 > 0:32:23and the gusts were not happening. But if you notice as we got closer
0:32:23 > 0:32:28to the end of run one, heading into run two, the wind really picked up
0:32:28 > 0:32:34and even was you know, they were struggling so much. Some of the runs
0:32:34 > 0:32:41that were landed were all in the first run. Whether it was too
0:32:41 > 0:32:46dangerous, snowboarding is an extreme sport and you do take risks,
0:32:46 > 0:32:51but this was a big risk. I'm surprised some of the girls didn't
0:32:51 > 0:32:56speak up at the top when you have a rider meeting. You have talked about
0:32:56 > 0:32:59that, but they speak with the coaches and the judges and make a
0:32:59 > 0:33:04decision and a call about whether it should go ahead. I wonder if they
0:33:04 > 0:33:09all got so in the moment with the training session that that was maybe
0:33:09 > 0:33:14overlooked to consider that hey, hang on, this is... This wind is
0:33:14 > 0:33:19really picking up now.Actually maybe some of that comes down to
0:33:19 > 0:33:23experience, if you have, if your sport has been in the Olympics for a
0:33:23 > 0:33:29long time, you feel more confident saying no, not today. Equally if you
0:33:29 > 0:33:34have got a lot of younger riders who want to get on with it, they're not
0:33:34 > 0:33:39necessarily going to stand up to Olympic organiser say, don't fancy
0:33:39 > 0:33:45this today?Yeah, there is a question over some of the girls
0:33:45 > 0:33:52maybe tried to and maybe some didn't. I think that is Las question
0:33:52 > 0:33:59of some of the -- - that is also a question of some of the coaches. We
0:33:59 > 0:34:06don't know, everything is hearsay on that conversation. Did they feel
0:34:06 > 0:34:13pressure from the TV?Are there any serious injuries because of falls
0:34:13 > 0:34:18today or is everyone OK.I think everyone is OK. There has been some
0:34:18 > 0:34:23bumps and bruises and girls were coming up short and catching the
0:34:23 > 0:34:29edge. Fortunately there weren't any bad injuries. The event did happen
0:34:29 > 0:34:33and the contest did happen. We have to remember that. Some girls did
0:34:33 > 0:34:38land a run. But those runs you were seeing, they were almost identical
0:34:38 > 0:34:44to the runs that we saw in Sochi. We know these girls can do such good
0:34:44 > 0:34:57runs. For snowboarding it is a shame.A word on Jamie Anderson,
0:34:57 > 0:35:04defending her title.Yeah, Jamie Anderson of course has so much
0:35:04 > 0:35:09experience and she really dropped down her level of riding to lapped a
0:35:09 > 0:35:15run. -- land a run. That was the key. She could land a run in almost
0:35:15 > 0:35:20any conditions. She will be over the moon she battled through that. Even
0:35:20 > 0:35:26herself, she was would have liked to have show cased the high new tricks.
0:35:26 > 0:35:32But she is now a two-times Olympic champion. That is pretty cool.Thank
0:35:32 > 0:35:44you. Thanks for staying out late for us. Let her go inside I think now.
0:35:44 > 0:35:50It is fantastic. It is rare, I know it is almost part of psyche of
0:35:50 > 0:35:55snowboarders not so say things that are controversial, it is quite rare
0:35:55 > 0:35:59to hear people say, that was dangerous, irresponsible, shouldn't
0:35:59 > 0:36:05have happened.Yes, there is pressures there. If they say Ben
0:36:05 > 0:36:10Kilner you're next to drop and it was bad conditions, I wouldn't say
0:36:10 > 0:36:16no, because I have trained for four years and I won't say no to a run
0:36:16 > 0:36:20and disappoint people. I think that they have obviously felt the
0:36:20 > 0:36:25precious and don't want the say no. Once the riders start dropping in,
0:36:25 > 0:36:30they can't go back.In ski jumping they have all of these machines
0:36:30 > 0:36:35measuring the wind and if it is too much of a side wind, they have the
0:36:35 > 0:36:45technology to tell them and the decision is made by the judges.
0:36:45 > 0:36:48Maybe they should bring in this technology if it is a problem in the
0:36:48 > 0:36:52future.Today, the girls were starting and on the rail and the top
0:36:52 > 0:36:59it was OK and then it was so gusty. Even that might not have picked it
0:36:59 > 0:37:06up.The other more established sports, the men's down hill
0:37:06 > 0:37:13cancelled because of the wind.Is that an ego things, do the girls
0:37:13 > 0:37:18don't want to say no. In the heads they're doing something crazy and
0:37:18 > 0:37:26difficult and don't want to be the ones who say this isn't safe.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29ones who say this isn't safe. The giant slalom was cancelled and you
0:37:29 > 0:37:36guys, they charge that and they tried that.I'm not sure why they
0:37:36 > 0:37:40haven't gone forward with it to the IOC and tried to postpone it
0:37:40 > 0:37:48further. But it is one of those things it is hard once the event
0:37:48 > 0:37:52starts, they can't draw back. They make it unfair if five people go and
0:37:52 > 0:37:59the rest have to follow. What Jamie Anderson did cleverly was just
0:37:59 > 0:38:03contain it and get your run done, they're difficult conditions, a lot
0:38:03 > 0:38:13of people won't complete. Jenny Jones said in the run up, the tricks
0:38:13 > 0:38:19she did in Sochi wouldn't have got her on the podium. But with that she
0:38:19 > 0:38:26would have won gold.Jamie Anderson is experienced and went in with a
0:38:26 > 0:38:36simple run.It takes confidence to do that and knowledge to back up.It
0:38:36 > 0:38:39was thrilling to watch, but not for the reasons we wanted. A huge shame
0:38:39 > 0:38:45they weren't able to show their most difficult tricks. They can do it.
0:38:45 > 0:38:51But big air still to come and women's half pipe and that is a
0:38:51 > 0:38:57different set. So we are going to go inside. That sheeps the safe efs --
0:38:57 > 0:39:01that seems the safest thing and show you the grace and finesse of ice
0:39:01 > 0:39:08skating.
0:39:08 > 0:39:26? COMMENTATOR: Our first look at the Russia wonder kid. The prodigy.
0:39:28 > 0:39:36She is something else.
0:41:39 > 0:41:44Into the first jumping path and it is the most difficult combination we
0:41:44 > 0:41:49will see.
0:41:50 > 0:41:54will see. A triple loop combination.
0:42:03 > 0:42:11Double axel, triple toe loop.
0:42:11 > 0:42:23Here is the triple flip. Double toe, double loop combination.
0:43:01 > 0:43:11And another triple flip. Last jump, the axel.
0:43:43 > 0:43:49Alina Zagitova. You have a bonus for having the jumps in the back end to.
0:43:49 > 0:43:54Start as she does always, footwork sequence, beautiful spins and lay
0:43:54 > 0:43:59the jumps down, it is fantastic. She just pops up from the ice, doesn't
0:43:59 > 0:44:12she? You don't even see them coming. It is the identical
0:44:12 > 0:44:16It is the identical technique that Mediva has. I would love to go and
0:44:16 > 0:44:19watch and see how these teach these youngsters, because they are
0:44:19 > 0:44:27children.She is 15 years old and she can do that at the Olympics! But
0:44:27 > 0:44:32the talent is undeniable. It is not childish in its performance. She is
0:44:32 > 0:44:3715, but there is such maturity in the choreography and the way she
0:44:37 > 0:44:47moves. What is also very clever is there's pretty much not a single
0:44:47 > 0:44:52movement in this programme that is not designed to get them points. She
0:44:52 > 0:45:00has such confidence, that belies her age. She steps out on to the ice and
0:45:00 > 0:45:06you think there will be no mistakes. And even when, and I have seen her
0:45:06 > 0:45:09mistakes, it doesn't carry through into the rest of the performance, it
0:45:09 > 0:45:18is left behind and after you go.
0:45:18 > 0:45:21Fantastic to hear this could be a medal performance with the music of
0:45:21 > 0:45:34Don Quixote, the music that won the gold medal in 1976.
0:45:37 > 0:45:44157.97 is her season's best.No red lights from the judges, green across
0:45:44 > 0:45:55the board, so everything will count. There is Medvedeva, standing behind.
0:45:55 > 0:46:02158.08, a new season's best for 15-year-old
0:46:04 > 0:46:0615-year-old Alina Zagitova. Surely looking for a medal in the
0:46:06 > 0:46:14individual as well.Her team-mate, Medvedeva will be her nearest rival.
0:46:14 > 0:46:24Our final skaters represent Canada. The gold is already in the bag, so
0:46:24 > 0:46:31just a masterclass then from the
0:46:37 > 0:46:39world champions, Virtue Tessa and Moir Scott. The gold around their
0:46:39 > 0:46:42necks when this is done.
0:50:19 > 0:50:27CHEERING
0:50:47 > 0:50:54CHEERING AND APPLAUSE From the Mulan Rouge to the top of
0:50:54 > 0:51:00the podium, that will put Canada out of sight. The gold is already there
0:51:00 > 0:51:03is but Virtue Tessa and Moir Scott are head and shoulders above the
0:51:03 > 0:51:10rest.Everything that they do, every detail of this is designed
0:51:10 > 0:51:13specifically and only with this music. It wouldn't work anywhere
0:51:13 > 0:51:18else. I think the time they took to do it, plus technically they are
0:51:18 > 0:51:27incredibly strong. That's what that stance is all about -- ice dance is
0:51:27 > 0:51:34all about, the theatre, the performance.
0:51:34 > 0:51:41performance. 118.10 for the Canadians. Easily on top of the
0:51:41 > 0:51:46stack. And as if they didn't already know, confirmation that team Canada
0:51:46 > 0:51:52are the Olympic champions.
0:51:52 > 0:51:55Now you see why Virtue Tessa and Moir Scott came out of retirement
0:51:55 > 0:51:59after Sochi. Oh my word. Patrick Chung, on the left, his first-ever
0:51:59 > 0:52:04Olympic gold medal. A three-time champion that the first time he has
0:52:04 > 0:52:10got an Olympic gold around his neck, which will happen later. Patrick
0:52:10 > 0:52:15Virtue Tessa and Moir Scott have been dancing together since she was
0:52:15 > 0:52:19seven and he was nine or something. You can see it in the synchronicity.
0:52:19 > 0:52:24They get given the Tiger, the mascot, at the venue and then there
0:52:24 > 0:52:28is a medal ceremony later. Germany out in front at the moment with
0:52:28 > 0:52:32three gold medals so far but Canada get on the board with that gold
0:52:32 > 0:52:39medal. And it is possible, highly possible, that Germany could add to
0:52:39 > 0:52:43their gold medal tally. Coming up shortly as the women's biathlon. We
0:52:43 > 0:52:47will be heading there and joining commentary very soon. Adjustments
0:52:47 > 0:52:56and -- I just want some quick reaction.I look at that I think it
0:52:56 > 0:52:59must be the most difficult winter sport out there and then I look at
0:52:59 > 0:53:02slopestyle and think that is the most difficult was that each has
0:53:02 > 0:53:06their element but that is stunning. I think the way they perform, they
0:53:06 > 0:53:10almost mirror each other's movements.They think the same. It
0:53:10 > 0:53:13is just so elegant. When you watch their feet, you don't realise how
0:53:13 > 0:53:20much they are turning, pivoting. It is like they live it with every of
0:53:20 > 0:53:25their being, it is so emotive. Oh my gosh! We should try it.No, we
0:53:25 > 0:53:29shouldn't! Let's had out quickly back to Pyeongchang because we have
0:53:29 > 0:53:33live sport coming your way and is women's by Rotherham. It is the
0:53:33 > 0:53:41pursuit and
0:53:41 > 0:53:46pursuit and Germany's Laura Dahlmeier trying to do the double.
0:53:46 > 0:53:48This is first past the post competition.
0:53:52 > 0:53:57COMMENTATOR: The first to cross the line for the medal and the standings
0:53:57 > 0:54:02from the sprint race are of vital importance. We have four visits to
0:54:02 > 0:54:08the shooting range, two lying down, prone, and two standing up. The key
0:54:08 > 0:54:12fact as far as the German fans are concerned, a great attendance
0:54:12 > 0:54:18despite being bitterly cold, -12, and quite windy. When you take the
0:54:18 > 0:54:22wind chill into account you are probably looking closer to minus 20.
0:54:22 > 0:54:27But there is Laura Dahlmeier. She will begin with a 24 second head
0:54:27 > 0:54:31start. That was her winning margin in the Sprint and all of the women
0:54:31 > 0:54:38preparing and warming up behind her will be chasing down the German. The
0:54:38 > 0:54:42times you can see on the screen is how far behind Laura Dahlmeier they
0:54:42 > 0:54:48finished in the Sprint on Saturday. And just to reiterate, if you are
0:54:48 > 0:54:52watching biathlon for the first time, Laura Dahlmeier getting her
0:54:52 > 0:54:58quest for a golden double underway. It is a ten kilometre race, this
0:54:58 > 0:55:01one. Five circuits of two kilometres, then they visit the
0:55:01 > 0:55:06range at the end of laps one, two, three and four. The real sting in
0:55:06 > 0:55:14the tale is that for every miss at least shooting range, they will have
0:55:14 > 0:55:19two ski one penalty loop of 150 metres, that equates in time to
0:55:19 > 0:55:24around 23-25 seconds of skiing. Number two, a
0:55:26 > 0:55:32brilliant silver medical for her.
0:55:32 > 0:55:41The veteran from France got a bronze in Vancouver.
0:55:41 > 0:55:50The figure to watch on the lime-green is the defending winter
0:55:50 > 0:55:56pursuit champion, Darya Domracheva, who is capable of closing the
0:55:56 > 0:56:02deficit. The shooting range was the reason we had some unlikely
0:56:02 > 0:56:11medallists, no disrespect. Because in the race on Saturday of the 87
0:56:11 > 0:56:15women who took part, only three shot clean. Shooting clean means they hit
0:56:15 > 0:56:21ten out of ten targets at the range. So it is up to these women who are
0:56:21 > 0:56:29starting some 1.5 minutes behind Laura Dahlmeier to be as accurate as
0:56:29 > 0:56:36they can at the range and hope that those in front run into one or two
0:56:36 > 0:56:43problems. But here is Dahlmeier. These are great races, I've really
0:56:43 > 0:56:47been looking forward to this one. When you first start watching
0:56:47 > 0:56:52biathlon, you can't believe that the two sets of skills go so well
0:56:52 > 0:56:57together. Because the men and women who compete here need incredible
0:56:57 > 0:57:01speed, stamina and technical ability for the cross-country skiing, but
0:57:01 > 0:57:05they then need to come into the shooting range, lower their pulse
0:57:05 > 0:57:10and be as calm and composed and collected as possible, aiming at a
0:57:10 > 0:57:16tiny target, when they are lying down it is 4.5 centimetres. That is
0:57:16 > 0:57:24about the same width, diameter as the carbon cheek -- cardboard tube
0:57:24 > 0:57:29of a toilet roll. Then they are back out on what is a very, very tough
0:57:29 > 0:57:36course here, ready for another lung bursting 2.5 kilometre loop. There
0:57:36 > 0:57:45is a little something for everyone. 35 seconds adrift now, Darya
0:57:45 > 0:57:50Domracheva. That thousands she has closed down by 11 seconds and Laura
0:57:50 > 0:57:54Dahlmeier. We would expect the field to start coming together a little
0:57:54 > 0:57:59bit. Very, very hard to lead, albeit with a 24 second head start. You
0:57:59 > 0:58:03know that the rest of the field are quite well bunched and at some
0:58:03 > 0:58:09stage, you would think, Laura Dahlmeier will come under pressure,
0:58:09 > 0:58:14especially in the shooting range for the first of her four visits.
0:58:17 > 0:58:26The course for the cross-country biathlon are stunning. I had a
0:58:26 > 0:58:33little jog round last week whilst we were doing our prep. By daylight, it
0:58:33 > 0:58:37is a beautiful, beautiful setting. No time for these women, including
0:58:37 > 0:58:44Darya Domracheva in the lime-green, to enjoy the surroundings. Absolute
0:58:44 > 0:58:51focus required when they get into the range for the first time.
0:58:51 > 0:58:53Because
0:58:59 > 0:59:10great aerial view. Of the home stadium. Darya Domracheva, she will
0:59:10 > 0:59:15be using this opportunity just to try and get that pulse down, even if
0:59:15 > 0:59:23it's down from about 180 to 160, 150, 140. She is unlikely to be
0:59:23 > 0:59:26taking a full breath in
0:59:26 > 0:59:32efforts at the range. A surprise silver and bronze medallists from
0:59:32 > 0:59:38the Sprint on Saturday are locked together. There was about seven
0:59:38 > 0:59:47seconds, two seconds separating them on the podium on Saturday night.
0:59:49 > 0:59:52Dahlmeier trying to block out the cheering and the noise from the
0:59:52 > 0:59:57crowd. Experts call these moments, building the position. Getting
0:59:57 > 1:00:02themselves ready. This is about rhythm. There is no set order,
1:00:02 > 1:00:10whether you left to right or right to left. White means a hit target. A
1:00:10 > 1:00:16flash of red means a miss and a penalty loop of 150 meet es. This is
1:00:16 > 1:00:21good from Dahlmeier. The last one can be trickiest. She has shot
1:00:21 > 1:00:31clean. She is out pretty much at the same time Olsbu hit her target. She
1:00:31 > 1:00:37has a flash and red, so will have at least one penalty loop. Vitkova has
1:00:37 > 1:00:50shot clean wearing bib No 3. Habert has two penalty loops there.
1:00:52 > 1:00:57Dahlmeier leading. Vitkova in second. Remember, this is first past
1:00:57 > 1:01:05the post, that makes it easier to understand. That was Vittozzi, the
1:01:05 > 1:01:16Italian. A couple of missing for Semerenko. Domracheva has shot clean
1:01:16 > 1:01:22and that is significant.
1:01:25 > 1:01:28and that is significant. Braisaz of France is fifth. Some of the big
1:01:28 > 1:01:35names are going well.
1:01:35 > 1:01:44names are going well. Dahlmeier still in front.
1:01:44 > 1:01:50still in front. Here is the standings.
1:01:50 > 1:02:01standings. Kuzmina is doing well. Olsbu has the one next to her name,
1:02:01 > 1:02:10because she has had one miss.
1:02:10 > 1:02:13because she has had one miss. It is the inner circle, that is the four
1:02:13 > 1:02:18and a half centimetres, the outer circle is the one they will be
1:02:18 > 1:02:23aiming at when they come in for the standing shoot. Lovely rhythm from
1:02:23 > 1:02:38the German. A 17-second advantage at the beginning of her second circuit.
1:02:41 > 1:02:51That miss could prove costly for Olsbu. 50 metres away in minus 12,
1:02:51 > 1:02:57harder than it looks. Laura Dahlmeier is aiming to become the
1:02:57 > 1:03:04third German to win is in fantastic title.
1:03:07 > 1:03:11Dahlmeier swept all before her at the World Championships last year
1:03:11 > 1:03:15and a few people were wondering whether she may have lost a little
1:03:15 > 1:03:20bit of that sparkle on the World Cup circuit this year. A couple of wins,
1:03:20 > 1:03:26six podiums.
1:03:26 > 1:03:35six podiums. Now 13 just got a glimpse. Three is Vitkova. 33 is
1:03:35 > 1:03:43Kuzmina. She won in Vancouver and Sochi. Seven podiums this season.
1:03:43 > 1:03:48The speed is key for her today and she is going brilliantly. Just to
1:03:48 > 1:03:54put that into context, Kuzmina 17 seconds adrift of Dahlmeier, when
1:03:54 > 1:03:58she left the shooting range at the end of that first circuit, she was
1:03:58 > 1:04:0732 seconds adrift. So she is going brilliantly. Domracheva is the
1:04:07 > 1:04:14defending champion. Olsbu is struggling after that penalty loop.
1:04:14 > 1:04:21Good shotting, I make it -- good shooting. Six of the leading 11 shot
1:04:21 > 1:04:27clean on their first visit. Of course, it can all change. But the
1:04:27 > 1:04:33drama is beginning to unfold, because Kuzmina is moving
1:04:33 > 1:04:38brilliantly.
1:04:38 > 1:04:44brilliantly. There is Kuzmina. Second in the World Cup standings.
1:04:44 > 1:04:49She was bitterly disappointed to finish 13th. She missed three
1:04:49 > 1:04:56targets - two in the prone and one in the standing. That is why she
1:04:56 > 1:05:02started a minute adrift of Dahlmeier. Now she is only 14.5
1:05:02 > 1:05:10seconds adrift. Braisaz of France going well in these early stages.
1:05:10 > 1:05:18Olsbu is 44 seconds adrift now. Domracheva is OK, but needs to start
1:05:18 > 1:05:24picking up the speed. She started 46 seconds behind Dahlmeier and has
1:05:24 > 1:05:40drifted three seconds further back. Kuzmina however is getting closer.
1:05:44 > 1:05:4525 is
1:05:48 > 1:05:56We could see some nerves here fluttering as well as the flags. If
1:05:56 > 1:06:00Kuzmina is continuing to ski as well the last time we saw her, she will
1:06:00 > 1:06:07be coming into the range and will be lying down next to Laura Dahlmeier
1:06:07 > 1:06:13before the German has finished her second set of five shots at the
1:06:13 > 1:06:15target and the psychological pressure starts to mount on the
1:06:15 > 1:06:20German.
1:06:34 > 1:06:38Dahlmeier is the first to shoot. She is going left to right and she has
1:06:38 > 1:06:44got a miss slam she has been put under pressure. But so too has
1:06:44 > 1:06:48Kuzmina with her first attempt at the target. They could well be
1:06:48 > 1:06:55coming out of their penalty loop at the same time. Kuzmina taking her
1:06:55 > 1:06:59time over her last effort. It is often the fifth that causes the
1:06:59 > 1:07:04problem. She is really taking her time. Kuzmina only has one penalty
1:07:04 > 1:07:12loop. Vitkova could go into the lead here if she shoots clean. Talking
1:07:12 > 1:07:18about the athlete in lane 3. But there is a miss from the bronze
1:07:18 > 1:07:26medallist and a miss from Olsbu.
1:07:30 > 1:07:38medallist and a miss from Olsbu. Can Braisaz go clean? The lady who was
1:07:38 > 1:07:46last out on the course has shot clean.
1:07:46 > 1:07:53clean. Bescond is a class act and is ninth in the World Cup standings.
1:07:53 > 1:08:01Dahlmeier in the lead with Kuzmina nine seconds behind her. Cadurisch
1:08:01 > 1:08:09is fourth.
1:08:09 > 1:08:12is fourth. The next time they come into the range they will be shooting
1:08:12 > 1:08:18standing up.
1:08:26 > 1:08:35Such a brutal combination of tests. Got to lower their pulse.
1:08:37 > 1:08:43Domracheva, she has that one miss. So she is in eighth place now and 58
1:08:43 > 1:08:51seconds off the pace. Kuzmina is looking good. That is Dahlmeier. She
1:08:51 > 1:08:55and Kuzmina both missing early on with this second visit to the range.
1:08:55 > 1:09:02But it was only one personality loop each. Dahlmeier still leading. But
1:09:02 > 1:09:09Kuzmina is a very quick skier. That is why the two of them are now,
1:09:09 > 1:09:15well, pretty much only a ski length apart. Dahlmeier leads, Kuzmina in
1:09:15 > 1:09:22second. What a great battle this could turn out to be. Plenty of time
1:09:22 > 1:09:26for one or two of the other women to get in the mix, depending on how
1:09:26 > 1:09:36these two get on their their second two visits to the range.
1:09:52 > 1:09:59Kuzmina now decides to take it on.
1:09:59 > 1:10:06Her daughter, Olivia, was born in 2015. So she has come back from
1:10:06 > 1:10:14childbirth, trying to recapture her very best form.
1:10:14 > 1:10:19very best form. First Slovakian to win a winter Olympic gold, she was
1:10:19 > 1:10:24representing Russia up until 2008. Dahlmeier, the five-time world
1:10:24 > 1:10:31champion, having to hang on a bit. Bescond is going well, five finishes
1:10:31 > 1:10:40in the top ten on the World Cup circuit this season. Got an
1:10:40 > 1:10:48individual silver at the world champs a few years ago.
1:10:53 > 1:10:59Cadurisch is going well. Vitkova and Dahlmeier and Kuzmina has won this
1:10:59 > 1:11:07at the range. If you're just joining us the air temperature is about
1:11:07 > 1:11:15minus 12 and it will feel colder for these women at the Alpine Centre. In
1:11:15 > 1:11:23the men's sprint yesterday, there were people crossing the finishing
1:11:23 > 1:11:28line with icicles hanging off their beards - those of them who have got
1:11:28 > 1:11:35a beard. It was incredible to see. Just little pieces of spittle that
1:11:35 > 1:11:42had frozen solid on their way around the course. Kuzmina and Dahl hire
1:11:42 > 1:11:50out on their -- Dahlmeier out on their own. Bescond is 23 seconds
1:11:50 > 1:11:57adrift and she is a bit adrift. All can change. There are still two
1:11:57 > 1:12:06visits left to the range. Standing next time. So they're aiming at a
1:12:06 > 1:12:11bigger target.
1:12:11 > 1:12:18bigger target. Dahl hire clearly felt -- Dahlmeier clearly felt the
1:12:18 > 1:12:23pressure of Kuzmina being alongside her the last time. But where she
1:12:23 > 1:12:30missed, so too did Kuzmina. Which one will be able to hold nerve at
1:12:30 > 1:12:35this third visit to the range? With Bescond at the beginning of that
1:12:35 > 1:12:42straight behind them.
1:13:07 > 1:13:16So Kuzmina getting herself poised, getting herself ready. There she is.
1:13:16 > 1:13:22Going right to left. Oh there is a miss from Kuzmina. Two misses from
1:13:22 > 1:13:28Kuzmina. Dahlmeier just needs to focus on what she is doing. She is
1:13:28 > 1:13:32two away from having a sizeable lead. One away. The last one is
1:13:32 > 1:13:37often the most difficult. Yes, Dahlmeier shoots clean. Kuzmina with
1:13:37 > 1:13:46two penalty loops. That will equate to around 50 seconds. All that hard
1:13:46 > 1:13:52work she produced to close the gap all undone by a matter of
1:13:52 > 1:14:01millimetres, not once, but twice. Cadurisch with two misses now. Oh,
1:14:01 > 1:14:06three for Cadurisch. That is such a shame. She was going so well.
1:14:06 > 1:14:14Bescond still with just the one miss.
1:14:15 > 1:14:18miss. If Vitkova could shoot clean, she would be in second place I
1:14:18 > 1:14:29think. That is good shooting from the woman from the Czech Republic.
1:14:29 > 1:14:34The defending champion, Domracheva, we may have forgotten her. But a
1:14:34 > 1:14:44clean shoot would give her a chance. She has missed one.
1:14:47 > 1:14:50She has missed one. Kuzmina in second and 37 seconds adrift. They
1:14:50 > 1:14:54were side by side. The reason is because she missed two at the range.
1:14:54 > 1:15:00Vitkova is in third and Bescond in fourth.
1:15:08 > 1:15:18World junior silver in the pursuit couple of years ago. Watch out for
1:15:18 > 1:15:23Herman, a former cross-country skier, she's in eighth. We know
1:15:23 > 1:15:29Kuzmina will go absolutely hell for leather now to try and close the gap
1:15:29 > 1:15:34down an Dahlmeier, and we know she is a quicker skier than the German.
1:15:34 > 1:15:38Disappointment on the face of the Slovakian, she was way off with that
1:15:38 > 1:15:49one. Two misses proving so costly. Dahlmeier clean on that visit. Still
1:15:49 > 1:15:52just the one.
1:16:07 > 1:16:10Dahlmeier leading, Kuzmina in second. Vitkova in the bronze medal
1:16:10 > 1:16:16position. Anais Bescond with a penalty loop. Dahlmeier once again
1:16:16 > 1:16:25has a bit of breathing space.
1:16:36 > 1:16:40You can hear the German coaches roaring her on, giving her the
1:16:40 > 1:16:47information. She will have been aware, of course,
1:16:47 > 1:16:50aware, of course, Kuzmina had a couple of penalties, but wouldn't
1:16:50 > 1:16:55know how much her lead was. She will now, courtesy of the coaches. Once
1:16:55 > 1:17:04again, Kuzmina having to push really hard here, in terms of the skiing,
1:17:04 > 1:17:10to make up for that inaccuracy at the range. Maybe she is tiring,
1:17:10 > 1:17:13because she was 37, nearly 38 seconds adrift and she hasn't
1:17:13 > 1:17:19managed to close on that first little section of that climb out of
1:17:19 > 1:17:31the stadium. Bescond trying to close in on Veronika Vitkova. The cosy
1:17:31 > 1:17:40left the range 1.09 address.
1:17:40 > 1:17:47A good target for the Frenchwoman. 21 on the left, Denise Herrmann.
1:17:47 > 1:17:51There she is. She got a bronze in a brilliant cross country race four
1:17:51 > 1:17:56years ago in Sochi. If she can bring that cross-country speed to be for
1:17:56 > 1:18:01here and if she can shoot clean on her next visit to the range, maybe
1:18:01 > 1:18:05she has a chance. There is Domracheva, the defending champion.
1:18:05 > 1:18:10She was one minute and 34 off the pace when she left the shooting
1:18:10 > 1:18:20range for the third time. She has missed twice. So, Dahlmeier
1:18:20 > 1:18:29attempting the double here. This is her last visit to the range. If she
1:18:29 > 1:18:37can shoot clean here she has a chance of producing history on this
1:18:37 > 1:18:44stunning course. Two misses from Kuzmina allowing Dahlmeier a little
1:18:44 > 1:18:51bit of breathing space here, but she has to maintain her focus and her
1:18:51 > 1:18:55concentration. It looks as though she is peaking at exactly the right
1:18:55 > 1:18:59time, which is what she did at the World Championships last year when
1:18:59 > 1:19:04she took an unprecedented five gold medals. Five gold medals at the
1:19:04 > 1:19:10worlds. Can she go two out of two at the early stages of the biathlon in
1:19:10 > 1:19:16the Winter Games, when the stakes are even higher? 24 years of age,
1:19:16 > 1:19:27Laura Dahlmeier. She was ill early on this season. She looks as though
1:19:27 > 1:19:35she is fully recovered. The Germans in the crowd are holding their
1:19:35 > 1:19:39breath. Surely five clean shots here and the gold will be within her
1:19:39 > 1:19:53grasp. Good start, going right to left this time. A little pause. Last
1:19:53 > 1:20:00one is sometimes the most difficult. Not today! That was sensational
1:20:00 > 1:20:06shooting. And before Kuzmina has even taken her first effort,
1:20:06 > 1:20:12Dahlmeier is on her way out of the range and heading for her last two
1:20:12 > 1:20:15kilometre circuit. Kuzmina now under enormous pressure, and that's
1:20:15 > 1:20:19perhaps why she has missed with her first effort. She knew she couldn't
1:20:19 > 1:20:25afford a single mistake. Now just trying to block out the context and
1:20:25 > 1:20:32the other two who have arrived alongside her. One penalty loop for
1:20:32 > 1:20:38Kuzmina, still in with a shout of a medal, of course. Bescond and
1:20:38 > 1:20:45Vitkova side by side. Remember, Denise Herrmann, the German, if she
1:20:45 > 1:20:51can shoot clean, she has a chance. A very fast cross-country skier.
1:20:51 > 1:21:00Vitkova has missed one, now two. Olsbu also coming unstuck. Bescond,
1:21:00 > 1:21:07good shooting from her. If Denise Herrmann can... She has just missed
1:21:07 > 1:21:10one. I was going to save she could just get that last one with her
1:21:10 > 1:21:16skiing speed she might be in with a shout. Dahlmeier from Kuzmina with
1:21:16 > 1:21:20Bescond, those two very close together. They are the three
1:21:20 > 1:21:25medallists at the moment. This is Domracheva. Sheep this time has left
1:21:25 > 1:21:29it too late. She is a wonderful champion. She will have other
1:21:29 > 1:21:35opportunities as well as the relay. Dahlmeier has a lead of almost a
1:21:35 > 1:21:42minute out on the course. What will be a moment of history for her and
1:21:42 > 1:21:45the Germans.
1:21:45 > 1:21:53the Germans.
1:22:00 > 1:22:04Disappointment this time for Domracheva, but don't write her off,
1:22:04 > 1:22:10she is a wonderful champion. The Frenchwoman, Marie Dorin Habert, so
1:22:10 > 1:22:15close to a medal in the Sprint is not so this time. Dahlmeier from
1:22:15 > 1:22:20Kuzmina. Bescond headed out onto the range just a second behind the
1:22:20 > 1:22:25Slovakian. Olsbu, a surprise silver medallist from the Sprint is in
1:22:25 > 1:22:28fourth. Marie Dorin Habert in fifth. The third medallists look on paper
1:22:28 > 1:22:33like they have a big enough gap to assure themselves a place on the
1:22:33 > 1:22:42podium. Number 22, the
1:22:45 > 1:22:46podium. Number 22, the Estonian,
1:22:46 > 1:22:49podium. Number 22, the Estonian,. Dahlmeier bidding for an
1:22:49 > 1:22:54unprecedented double here in the history of women's biathlon in the
1:22:54 > 1:23:00Winter Olympic games. Nobody has done the Sprint pursuit double yet.
1:23:12 > 1:23:18Brilliant shooting, brilliant composure. She just needs to
1:23:18 > 1:23:24maintain her rhythm here. She will be tired, it is a really tough
1:23:24 > 1:23:34course. Kuzmina and Bescond in second and third. This has been a
1:23:34 > 1:23:40wonderful effort from Anastasiya Kuzmina. Her wrongdoing, missing at
1:23:40 > 1:23:48the range. These two, when they left the range for the fourth time, had a
1:23:48 > 1:23:54gap of a roundabout half a minute and Marte Olsbu who was in fourth.
1:23:54 > 1:23:58They are closing and Dahlmeier but surely it will be too little too
1:23:58 > 1:24:04late. 45 seconds, the gap. It was 55 for Kuzmina when she left the range,
1:24:04 > 1:24:09so she has managed to take ten seconds out of that lead, but this
1:24:09 > 1:24:17is Dahlmeier's to lose now. It will be, you suspect, another Winter
1:24:17 > 1:24:20Olympic medal for Anastasiya Kuzmina, but will it be a bronze or
1:24:20 > 1:24:29a silver? Anais Bescond tracking her every move. When you bear in mind,
1:24:29 > 1:24:37Bescond started, she was one minute and 15 behind Laura Dahlmeier. Only
1:24:37 > 1:24:4419th, that is why her bib says 19, only 19th in the sprint. Kuzmina was
1:24:44 > 1:24:4813. This has been much better from the two women currently occupying
1:24:48 > 1:24:54the other medal positions. And now the Frenchwoman trying to go for it.
1:24:54 > 1:25:02Kuzmina has got real quality. Two Golds in the sprint and she knew the
1:25:02 > 1:25:05shorter races were her best opportunity perhaps to get on the
1:25:05 > 1:25:12podium. And here she comes. Laura Dahlmeier, all on her own, in a
1:25:12 > 1:25:17class of her own and she has done the unprecedented double. She grabs
1:25:17 > 1:25:24the German flag. Delight once again, the 24-year-old absolutely superb
1:25:24 > 1:25:29tonight, in brutally cold conditions. She saunters over the
1:25:29 > 1:25:34line, a little look up. She is now a double Winter Olympic champion and
1:25:34 > 1:25:39she is the first woman ever to win the sprint and the pursuit and there
1:25:39 > 1:25:44are still so many more chances of gold to come. And what about this
1:25:44 > 1:25:49battle for the silver? Kuzmina on the left, just edging the
1:25:49 > 1:25:53Frenchwoman. It has been a fantastic effort and a great battle. Oh my
1:25:53 > 1:25:59goodness me, this is so close! I think Kuzmina got it just by two
1:25:59 > 1:26:06tempts second. They took almost half a minute out of Dahlmeier and that
1:26:06 > 1:26:14last lap. Not enough for gold, but Kuzmina and Bescond are worthy
1:26:14 > 1:26:18Winter Olympic medallists. A great battle to the line between the two
1:26:18 > 1:26:27of them. It was so, so close. Olsbu driving those arms, really good
1:26:27 > 1:26:31strength from the Norwegian. She is having a fabulous games. An
1:26:31 > 1:26:34unexpected silver for her in the sprint and that is a fantastic
1:26:34 > 1:26:44effort. She is forth.
1:26:44 > 1:26:46effort. She is forth. 21 is Denise Herrmann, the fantastic
1:26:46 > 1:26:52cross-country skier. When you bear in mind how recently she converted
1:26:52 > 1:26:55to biathlon, sixth place is fantastic. She will have other
1:26:55 > 1:26:59chances to come as well. Laura Dahlmeier has done the double. That
1:26:59 > 1:27:04is barometer Vitkova. Cutting a rather tired figure coming across
1:27:04 > 1:27:22the line. Lena Haecki inside the top ten. A great skier.
1:27:22 > 1:27:31ten. A great skier. Linn Persson there.
1:27:31 > 1:27:46there. And Lisa Vittozzi. Dorothy
1:27:47 > 1:27:53. Disappointment for the rest. A really, really tough night. A good
1:27:53 > 1:28:03effort from the Canadian, inside the top 20, Rosanna Crawford.
1:28:03 > 1:28:08The rest, absolutely shattered, but I think Laura Dahlmeier will have a
1:28:08 > 1:28:14little bit of energy left. Just got a quick glimpse there. She has done
1:28:14 > 1:28:25it! What a fantastic Games it is turning out to be for the
1:28:25 > 1:28:26turning out to be for the German biathlon. Laura Dahlmeier has made
1:28:26 > 1:28:31history on a freezing night here in South Korea. And she will have more
1:28:31 > 1:28:36opportunities to come for further glory. Kuzmina takes the silver,
1:28:36 > 1:28:40Bescond the bronze. A great race and brilliant celebrations from all
1:28:40 > 1:28:43three medallists.
1:28:43 > 1:28:47STUDIO: Pretty impressive from Dahlmeier and Germany, they are
1:28:47 > 1:28:52having a wonderful Games so far. They are at the top of the medals
1:28:52 > 1:28:56table, that is their fourth gold medal. We can see they are moving
1:28:56 > 1:29:01ahead of the Netherlands, who have two gold medal so far, USA with two.
1:29:01 > 1:29:05Norway, Canada, France, South Korea, and Sweden will have won gold medals
1:29:05 > 1:29:11at this time tomorrow, could Great Britain make their way onto the
1:29:11 > 1:29:16table?
1:29:16 > 1:29:22Being disqualified in Sochi her. They have gone down!I thought about
1:29:22 > 1:29:27never skating again fostered it took me two years to get over that. It
1:29:27 > 1:29:33made me tougher than I ever thought I could be.
1:29:33 > 1:29:39Christie aiming to be the first woman to win a short track title.
1:29:39 > 1:29:46Christie leading the charge, it will be tight. She has done it. Elise
1:29:46 > 1:29:51Christie! Here comes Christie on the inside, it is another gold.Proving
1:29:51 > 1:29:58something to the world. One gold, three golds, three golds. When
1:29:58 > 1:30:01something breaks your heart, it takes awhile to love again but I'm
1:30:01 > 1:30:10smiling now. I'm ready for the spotlight.
1:30:13 > 1:30:21This is when the spotlight will shine on Elise Christy. She was
1:30:21 > 1:30:25second fastest in qualifying. Her quarter final is tomorrow at 10. We
1:30:25 > 1:30:31know things can go wrong in short track, but hopefully her semi-final
1:30:31 > 1:30:39at 10 past 11. The final is tomorrow at 5 past 12.A we have a chance
1:30:39 > 1:30:43before we go before to the Pyeongchang for a section that we
1:30:43 > 1:30:50are going to call, Ask Chemmy. She knows everything there is to know
1:30:50 > 1:30:56about winter sports. We set you the challenge to ask her questions. Who
1:30:56 > 1:31:05knows where this may take you. Not restricted to alpine sports. You c
1:31:05 > 1:31:11turn to Ben. First from ice hockey, how do you get the lines on to the
1:31:11 > 1:31:17ice.It is a good question, if the lines were on the top they will
1:31:17 > 1:31:27dull. There is a huge vat of powdered paint that is mixed with
1:31:27 > 1:31:34water and they have these power brooms that sprays it on to the ice
1:31:34 > 1:31:42and seal it with a layer of water. It is unlikely where it is pointed
1:31:42 > 1:31:53on to the grass in rugby it gettious ing on your legs.No.When speed is
1:31:53 > 1:32:05an element of success, why do the mogul skiers not wear slim suits.A
1:32:05 > 1:32:13lot of it is speed. You think maybe they would long for the
1:32:13 > 1:32:19aerodynamics. But they're not in the tucked position and not reaching
1:32:19 > 1:32:24that high velocity, they don't need skin tight suits. However in down
1:32:24 > 1:32:31hill and I have one to show you. This what is we wear. This is a
1:32:31 > 1:32:37really thin Lycra suit that Clare wanted to wear and I said not today.
1:32:37 > 1:32:46This is very retro and this is Salt Lake City.Would mogul skiers wear
1:32:46 > 1:32:53that or watching the slopestyle style they could haven't got caught
1:32:53 > 1:33:00by the wind.You would take the style out...Are you saying we don't
1:33:00 > 1:33:08have style? That is exactly what she is saying. The technology of the
1:33:08 > 1:33:18speed suits has advanced. And our performance director in Britain is
1:33:18 > 1:33:24be hind wind tunnel testing and these suits have come a long way.
1:33:24 > 1:33:30You you see the Austrians go past, you can hear their skis. This is my
1:33:30 > 1:33:33bib from Sochi. It is like Blue Peter. Here is one I made earlier.
1:33:33 > 1:33:42The men don't get their bibs, nor do the girls until the day of the race.
1:33:42 > 1:33:48Because they would spray it to give it less wind resistance and it was
1:33:48 > 1:33:53said to be cheating.Back to the Austrian suits, the whistling is
1:33:53 > 1:34:02created from what? All the suits have to be tested to make them fair.
1:34:02 > 1:34:08This has a small metal plum and they're tested to led air through.
1:34:08 > 1:34:13If they stop air, if they fall, they will fall so fast. They try to
1:34:13 > 1:34:20monitor them. But the Austrians, this suit is one material and the
1:34:20 > 1:34:29Austrians have a tiny divot hole to pass through the speed trap and wear
1:34:29 > 1:34:35one piece under this. But this is 100th of the a second - it could
1:34:35 > 1:34:40first or nothing at all.You have done a lot of testing in wind
1:34:40 > 1:34:49tunnels.Yes you're hand goes out and it can make 0.7 of a second of
1:34:49 > 1:34:55difference over 100 minutes. Snowboarding, you have just got to
1:34:55 > 1:35:02look cool.It is just part of parcel. Baggy clothing...Baggy
1:35:02 > 1:35:12trousers!Red Gerard, not only does he look cool, if we see him. This is
1:35:12 > 1:35:17the ceremony at the event. A lot of people have been asking why are they
1:35:17 > 1:35:21getting Teddy bears. This is a reaction in the crowd for the
1:35:21 > 1:35:25athlete to enjoy that first moment when they know they have won gold.
1:35:25 > 1:35:33They will be getting a medal. There is a medal ceremony. But the medal
1:35:33 > 1:35:39weighs half a kilo the gold. You can see the texture that is to replicate
1:35:39 > 1:35:47the sacred trees in this region and the ribbon is part of the design and
1:35:47 > 1:35:55created using a traditional South Korean fabric.And you get your
1:35:55 > 1:36:00chance to celebrate twice?Yes, I think obviously you want to
1:36:00 > 1:36:04celebrate as many times as you can. I'm sure he will be celebrating
1:36:04 > 1:36:14again at home. And I remember
1:36:14 > 1:36:18again at home. And I remember in Vancouver it took a while to build.
1:36:18 > 1:36:22We have some very exciting news, because in a lot of the sports you
1:36:22 > 1:36:27can tell so much from the training runs, but particularly in the
1:36:27 > 1:36:40sliding sports. In skeleton we have a strong female team that includes
1:36:40 > 1:36:50Laura Deas and she has been getting better results than Lizzie Yarnold.
1:36:50 > 1:36:58In the second training run Laura was fastest. She is setting the pace.
1:36:58 > 1:37:03Flock is strong. Lizzie fourth fastest at the moment. And here are
1:37:03 > 1:37:07the men's training runs and under the radar, the men's team has not
1:37:07 > 1:37:18been talked about at all, you see Don Parsons on his second run, he is
1:37:18 > 1:37:25at the top by a long way. It is telling us the kit is spot on.Yes.
1:37:25 > 1:37:29The athletes are spot on. They're getting to know the track and they
1:37:29 > 1:37:35will build in confidence, because those times matter.Amy said
1:37:35 > 1:37:40although Dom is a surprise, he has a good start. He is going under the
1:37:40 > 1:37:45radar. We are all talking about Lizzie. And Laura is in the same
1:37:45 > 1:37:50boat. They can fulfil their expectation without the expectation
1:37:50 > 1:37:58of country. Dom is a quiet guy.He is very quiet. In Sochi and
1:37:58 > 1:38:03Vancouver he is quiet. Now he has the training runs.He has had some
1:38:03 > 1:38:09good results and he is getting closer. He could be a threat. The
1:38:09 > 1:38:13men's skeleton starts Thursday morning and finishes on Friday. The
1:38:13 > 1:38:18women's starts on Friday and finishes on Saturday. It is going to
1:38:18 > 1:38:24be fascinating and we will be hearing from the expertise of Amy
1:38:24 > 1:38:37Williams. Now to the Sliding Centre. It is the fist run first run of
1:38:37 > 1:38:46women's luge. We saw Felix Loch fail to win. Who could win in the women.
1:38:46 > 1:38:48Let's first out.
1:38:53 > 1:39:01After the watching the guys, will they take it steady?
1:39:11 > 1:39:19She was the first female luger to win a medal for America. And the
1:39:19 > 1:39:25first European to win a medal. Last year, she raced here in the World
1:39:25 > 1:39:30Cup and did OK without being brilliant and finished tenth. She is
1:39:30 > 1:39:35getting married this summer and America at the moment flying high.
1:39:35 > 1:39:40Can Hamlyn start her Olympic campaign in style. Erin Hamlyn for
1:39:40 > 1:39:45the United States, under way. First, a different start from what we were
1:39:45 > 1:39:55used to with the men. They start lower down the track and come into
1:39:55 > 1:40:00bend 4. Their start is shorter so they're straight into the bend and
1:40:00 > 1:40:12it has caught a couple of them out.
1:40:13 > 1:40:18She has her eye in and this is getting the first run to get rid of
1:40:18 > 1:40:24any sort of pre-race nerves and we will see what the speed is. 122K an
1:40:24 > 1:40:34hour. That is 70mph.That is a decent start.
1:40:34 > 1:40:38decent start. The coach happy. That is a new track record. We will see
1:40:38 > 1:40:45how fast it is as the next few sleds come down. The top four have been
1:40:45 > 1:40:52close. But it shows how cold it is, the ice is fast and that could make
1:40:52 > 1:40:58for good racing. And there could be more mistakes. You can't stress it
1:40:58 > 1:41:04enough what you need, they get four runs, you need consistency. There is
1:41:04 > 1:41:09so many of the men who had three good runs and a shocker and that put
1:41:09 > 1:41:19them out of it. Here one of most consistent of all time.
1:41:19 > 1:41:22consistent of all time. 34-year-old Huefner, she is the oldest
1:41:22 > 1:41:27competitor in the event. She has won all three medals at the last three
1:41:27 > 1:41:32Olympics, silver, bronze and gold in Vancouver. If she could get a medal
1:41:32 > 1:41:43she would be the most decorated competitor in luge history. She is
1:41:43 > 1:41:51trying to run down Hamlin's time. She had a better first bend than
1:41:51 > 1:41:57Hahlin. You can see how quickly the women have to get down on to the
1:41:57 > 1:42:01sled. The men have more time to settle. That is just the way the
1:42:01 > 1:42:07track is designed. She starts to build speed into the most important
1:42:07 > 1:42:14part. That is the line you have, you just miss the wall. As she comes
1:42:14 > 1:42:18down, that is building that speed and that is all relevant to the
1:42:18 > 1:42:30start. She has got similar speed to Hamlin.Should beat Hamlin, but only
1:42:30 > 1:42:41just. These two have started strongly.
1:42:41 > 1:42:47strongly. Visually I Huefner very impressive.She lost speed as she
1:42:47 > 1:42:52came into the big Olympic corner. She was a tenth up. As she come
1:42:52 > 1:42:58across the line, she has lost seven hundredth, that doesn't sound like
1:42:58 > 1:43:03much, but in four runs will that cost her a medal? That is the
1:43:03 > 1:43:06perfect line. You come out and you're pointing back to the left
1:43:06 > 1:43:14hand wall. As show you skimmed both sides.
1:43:30 > 1:43:36Third down Sandra Robatscher. She is the world No 9. The standard has
1:43:36 > 1:43:44been set. This is her first run of the Olympics.A good exit. You can
1:43:44 > 1:43:47see the difference in the start. That is why she is down in the red
1:43:47 > 1:43:55light already. The lines are looking good so far. Speed just building all
1:43:55 > 1:44:03the time. Trying to get a nice line into 8. The line drops down as you
1:44:03 > 1:44:09come into this important corner. Maybe because they have got reduced
1:44:09 > 1:44:17speed at this point it is making the track easier. But she is losing time
1:44:17 > 1:44:26down the bottom of the track. She is finishing her run for Italy. That
1:44:26 > 1:44:3414th corner very popular with the spectators. She has fallen a little
1:44:34 > 1:44:40way behind. As you said, John w that loss of speed very late on in her
1:44:40 > 1:44:46run. Strange isn't it you would have thought loss of speed would be hard
1:44:46 > 1:44:54to achieve once you're on the second half of the run.It is quite a
1:44:54 > 1:44:58strange thing, you can see into sliders in almost identical lines
1:44:58 > 1:45:02and one is doing more to achieve than. That is down to their driving
1:45:02 > 1:45:10styles and equipment and how they come into that corner.
1:45:11 > 1:45:25Next art for America is from a Britchner. Like many, she struggled
1:45:25 > 1:45:30early in her training, only 13 here last year. She reported earlier in
1:45:30 > 1:45:34the week Shirov corded herself to be very low after her first week of
1:45:34 > 1:45:40training that on Sunday morning, went quickest of all. A real mixed
1:45:40 > 1:45:45bag. Don't know what to expect clear.Back here. She has found a
1:45:45 > 1:45:52consistent failure that she leave. She is there and the start, but how
1:45:52 > 1:45:57will she cope with the speed and how will she build it? Is she a little
1:45:57 > 1:46:01nervous in just over driving it to make sure she is on the right lines
1:46:01 > 1:46:04customer still dropping back, but that could be relevant to the start
1:46:04 > 1:46:11time. Still building speed. This is the first one where we've seen
1:46:11 > 1:46:14having a bit of trouble, feet down and that will cost a lot of trouble
1:46:14 > 1:46:17as she comes down to the bottom. That is probably not what she was
1:46:17 > 1:46:24wanting. You can see straightaway, she went into straight about a tenth
1:46:24 > 1:46:31down and now three tenths dumb. Disappointed to be half a second
1:46:31 > 1:46:38behind. You can still see clattering into the walls after the US man was
1:46:38 > 1:46:42walking away there. I could sort of see that coming. Her body language
1:46:42 > 1:46:48all week was not great. She was very vocal about the fact her four runs
1:46:48 > 1:46:52on training had got to her.And those poor runs on training are
1:46:52 > 1:46:57still in her head now. This is the whole psychological part of this
1:46:57 > 1:47:01sport. She knows how to drive. You can see in her face, she knows she
1:47:01 > 1:47:05has messed up, got it wrong, not got as much air time as some of the men
1:47:05 > 1:47:09last night. Even a little mistake at that point in the corner could cost
1:47:09 > 1:47:14you nearly two or three tenths and that's what happened to her. Lost
1:47:14 > 1:47:19nearly four tenths because of that mistake. She looks gutted. She looks
1:47:19 > 1:47:24really upset. That was the coach with that arm round her. Another one
1:47:24 > 1:47:31for Germany now. Dajana Eitberger. Seven top six finishes in the World
1:47:31 > 1:47:35Cup this year and comes into the Olympic games ranked number two in
1:47:35 > 1:47:42the world. As she gets underway, she has reported a couple of times that
1:47:42 > 1:47:49she is having terrible difficulties after bend nine into the Dragons
1:47:49 > 1:47:55tale, it is key for her.Key for everyone. It is a tricky corner,
1:47:55 > 1:47:59nine is like no other corner on any other track on the world. You have
1:47:59 > 1:48:02to drive it completely differently to what they are used to. It is
1:48:02 > 1:48:07hard. She has gone a little bit flat. You can see her steering the
1:48:07 > 1:48:11sled and working too hard to get through that, but she has got
1:48:11 > 1:48:18through fairly clean. She will go the speed at the bottom. This may
1:48:18 > 1:48:22keep her in contention. She has got good speed. It might give her a
1:48:22 > 1:48:27little confidence for the next run. A little nudge on the wall at bend
1:48:27 > 1:48:3615. But to be so close to Hamlin and Tatjana Huefner, a perfectly
1:48:36 > 1:48:40satisfactory first go for Eitberger. She will be policed the Dragon's
1:48:40 > 1:48:45tale didn't cause any particular problems. Interesting to watch,
1:48:45 > 1:48:49whereas Tatjana Huefner went through it like an arrow, she had to correct
1:48:49 > 1:48:52herself halfway down. That's because she is not confident with the track
1:48:52 > 1:48:56at that point and her ability to drive it. What she's doing is just
1:48:56 > 1:49:03making sure that she gets through their clean and by that, she is just
1:49:03 > 1:49:06overriding and costing herself some speed. If she goes with the
1:49:06 > 1:49:09confidence of what she knows she can drive, she will be quicker on the
1:49:09 > 1:49:15second run. That is the early order, the top three separated by precious
1:49:15 > 1:49:21little. Next up, this is the best in the world, the Olympic champion from
1:49:21 > 1:49:27Sochi in Russia. Natalie Geisenberger absolutely destroyed
1:49:27 > 1:49:33the field. Let's see what shape she is in. She, of course, is ranked
1:49:33 > 1:49:38number one in the world and has been for the last six years. She is the
1:49:38 > 1:49:44one they all have to beat, on paper, as she begins her quest for another
1:49:44 > 1:49:48gold medal here at the Olympic Games. Geisenberger underway. This
1:49:48 > 1:49:55could be a real sprinkling of top quality. We shall see. She has not
1:49:55 > 1:49:58been off the podium all year and the most consistent pilot throughout the
1:49:58 > 1:50:03whole season, but it's now, none of that matters, this is about the
1:50:03 > 1:50:07Olympic Games and about making sure that she leaves here with the gold
1:50:07 > 1:50:12medal again. That is the only thing she has come for. This is the
1:50:12 > 1:50:20section of the track she needs to get right. She's down with a lot of
1:50:20 > 1:50:24speed. Don't know if that caption was right for the speed, she was
1:50:24 > 1:50:28starting to pick up on the women in front of her. She has great speed
1:50:28 > 1:50:33coming up the hill. She should be in the lead here by a few hundredths.
1:50:33 > 1:50:37Much quicker than Hamlin at that stage and she is seven hundredths of
1:50:37 > 1:50:41a second ahead of the field. So Natalie Geisenberger praise her
1:50:41 > 1:50:48first-hand of the Olympic Games, and it was a pretty tidy hand, as well.
1:50:48 > 1:50:53She sets the early standard. You could just see as she came up to get
1:50:53 > 1:50:57off her sled, looks like she took a deep breath, almost like, OK, first
1:50:57 > 1:51:03one is out the way, I know what the track feels like, I will open the
1:51:03 > 1:51:06traps on the second one and put the afterburners on.Look at the hips
1:51:06 > 1:51:11and thighs working to keep the through line. This is the difference
1:51:11 > 1:51:16between two pilots. You can see almost exactly on the same line.
1:51:16 > 1:51:20That is hours and hours of training and getting used to wake you need to
1:51:20 > 1:51:25be on the corner. Those two pilots are both Olympic champions from
1:51:25 > 1:51:30different Olympics, so they know how to slide. Some very smart talent
1:51:30 > 1:51:35still to come here. A mixed bag through the 30 that next is Kimberly
1:51:35 > 1:51:41McRae, who is an excellent second here in Pyeongchang last winter in
1:51:41 > 1:51:49the World Cup. That was a fine run in sixth place and she is underway.
1:51:49 > 1:51:55And having that result at the test event will give people a little
1:51:55 > 1:51:58confidence that the track sort of suits their style of driving and
1:51:58 > 1:52:02their equipment. It depends now whether she can handle the pressure
1:52:02 > 1:52:07of what those five Olympic rings rings. It is the same race, just
1:52:07 > 1:52:11over two days but it depends how she handles it. It looks like she is
1:52:11 > 1:52:15doing really well at the moment. She has the line, slightly more wavy in
1:52:15 > 1:52:1912 but it looks nice and clean and she is doing a good job. Staying in
1:52:19 > 1:52:26contention, within a tenth.Ahead of Hamlin at their respective stages.
1:52:26 > 1:52:32Down the bend to the 16th and final corner. Lost a tiny bit late on but
1:52:32 > 1:52:37only a fraction. She goes third. That is the way to celebrate! The
1:52:37 > 1:52:44Canadians in good voice. Most of these athletes now will thrive on
1:52:44 > 1:52:49the next run. Some of them will be nervous, especially if it is their
1:52:49 > 1:52:52first or maybe even their second Olympics and they are making a big
1:52:52 > 1:52:59jump up in the standard. Overall, that was a really good run. You can
1:52:59 > 1:53:04see she has dived into the track. A little bit of pressure, just try to
1:53:04 > 1:53:08cut the middle out too much but it worked for her. Maybe that is the
1:53:08 > 1:53:12style she has an she is not overworking the sled too much, still
1:53:12 > 1:53:17keeping herself in medal contention at the end of the first run.Natalie
1:53:17 > 1:53:23Geisenberger, Tatjana Huefner and Kimberly McRae separated by one
1:53:23 > 1:53:35tenth. Now Italy, Andrea Voetter. 19th in Sochi and world ranked 16
1:53:35 > 1:53:39coming in here. She did finish sixth in Innsbruck but that was the first
1:53:39 > 1:53:43World Cup race of the entire winter back in November. To be honest,
1:53:43 > 1:53:50hasn't done a lot since and normally not a fast start-up either.As we
1:53:50 > 1:53:54have seen, it doesn't necessarily... It is not necessarily how fast you
1:53:54 > 1:53:59start but how well you get through this section of the track here,
1:53:59 > 1:54:03where you are coming down the big steep drop into nine. It is all
1:54:03 > 1:54:07about this corner. She has that nice clothesline against the wall and
1:54:07 > 1:54:10straight through. That is a good line. That is the line working for
1:54:10 > 1:54:14the women at the moment. The men have a little more speed and it
1:54:14 > 1:54:18challenges them a little bit more. As she comes down to the bottom of
1:54:18 > 1:54:22the track, the speed is good but it is how close you can keep to these
1:54:22 > 1:54:30top five.Six for her, Andrea Voetter. Probably as good as she
1:54:30 > 1:54:35could have expected bearing in mind what she did in Sochi. The fact she
1:54:35 > 1:54:40has had a relatively quiet season so far also. Andrea Voetter going six
1:54:40 > 1:54:41for the moment.
1:54:41 > 1:54:42far also. Andrea Voetter going six for the moment.
1:54:42 > 1:54:44So the defending champion Natalie Geisenberger setting the pace. Three
1:54:44 > 1:54:49Germans in the top five after the first run of the luge. Back to see
1:54:49 > 1:54:53more of the second run. You may notice my guests have deserted me.
1:54:53 > 1:54:57It is because we were having a conversation about speed. You could
1:54:57 > 1:55:05see with those lugers, the suit built for speed.
1:55:06 > 1:55:08built for speed. Chemmy has persuaded Ben to do something you
1:55:08 > 1:55:12never thought he would do.A man begging to wear lycra. Let's get on
1:55:12 > 1:55:19it. Big jump! There we go. Can I just say... This is one of your most
1:55:19 > 1:55:23ridiculous ideas, as usual.Oh my gosh, you will love it, it is so
1:55:23 > 1:55:31comfortable. Your pecs are little big. You will want to go out on this
1:55:31 > 1:55:37later. This is the future of snowboarding, the world's first,
1:55:37 > 1:55:38snowboarders wearing lycra. Presumably you got help when doing
1:55:38 > 1:55:44this?No, you just contort yourself. This is really going to harm my
1:55:44 > 1:55:52street cred.Looks amazing. Can you get in a tuck position? Look at
1:55:52 > 1:55:56that, he is so streamlined! Honestly, it feels good, doesn't it?
1:55:56 > 1:56:02I don't know.Shall we just sit down and do the rest of the show in it?
1:56:02 > 1:56:06Whilst you do that, we will look at some of the headline makers of day
1:56:06 > 1:56:10three.
1:56:10 > 1:56:14Get me out of this now!
1:56:14 > 1:56:16Get me out of this now!Whilst Ben tries to get this off, let's see
1:56:16 > 1:56:21what the snowboarders wear. Only nine of the 25 women in the
1:56:21 > 1:56:24slopestyle final completed clean runs but Jamie Anderson coped best
1:56:24 > 1:56:28with the wind to successfully defend her title. Led by their most
1:56:28 > 1:56:40enduring partnership of Tessa virtue and Scott
1:56:41 > 1:56:50Moir, a gold medal. And also in the curling they will play
1:56:50 > 1:56:51Moir, a gold medal. And also in the curling they will play Switzerland
1:56:51 > 1:56:59or... We will find out soon who they face. Stay there, stay there, Ben!
1:57:00 > 1:57:08After we remind you how the rules of curling work.
1:57:08 > 1:57:13Curling originated in 16th century Scotland, and appeared in the very
1:57:13 > 1:57:18first Olympic Games in 1924, where Great Britain won gold. The aim of
1:57:18 > 1:57:23curling is to get more stones to the centre of the scoring area, known as
1:57:23 > 1:57:27the house, than your opponent. Sweeping is a key part. It affects
1:57:27 > 1:57:32the distance and direction a stone travels in. Tactics are crucial, in
1:57:32 > 1:57:36particular retailing last stone advantage, known as the hammer. In
1:57:36 > 1:57:41the men's and women's events there are four players in each team, who
1:57:41 > 1:57:45Cole two stones each end. Only one team can score per end and matches
1:57:45 > 1:57:52are over ten ends. This year sees the addition of mixed doubles, a
1:57:52 > 1:57:55shorter and more dynamic event played over eight ends instead of
1:57:55 > 1:58:01the traditional ten.
1:58:01 > 1:58:07So let's go and see some live action. The OA are against
1:58:07 > 1:58:16Switzerland in the gold-medal match. Jackie Lockhart and Steve Cram are
1:58:16 > 1:58:21your commentators. COMMENTATOR: You join us just at the end of this
1:58:21 > 1:58:25first end, with one stone left to play. Switzerland have that hammer
1:58:25 > 1:58:29in this first end and have a chance to score two. You can see we have
1:58:29 > 1:58:38just had a shot played by OAR, which has left a fairly comfortable
1:58:38 > 1:58:44opportunity. They're playing the yellows, Switzerland, OAR playing
1:58:44 > 1:58:49red. It should be fairly straightforward. It is actually
1:58:49 > 1:58:54Logan Green with me. It has been almost a textbook first end for
1:58:54 > 1:58:58Switzerland. If you have the hammer in the first end, scoring one is
1:58:58 > 1:59:04find a pick-up Scott Caplan that's great.Yes, Kerry with her first of
1:59:04 > 1:59:09the game setting the tone and putting the finishing touches on as
1:59:09 > 1:59:15well with the fifth stone. A perfect start for Switzerland. They lead by
1:59:15 > 1:59:22two after the first end. The hammer will transfer to OAR. Married
1:59:22 > 1:59:29couple. We have a few family connections in the curling,
1:59:29 > 1:59:36including the Smith family and Muirhead family. These two are
1:59:36 > 1:59:41actually married.
1:59:44 > 1:59:50actually married. Just explain mixed doubles, one man and one woman, the
1:59:50 > 1:59:54Russians in contrast to the other teams, the other seven teams, they
1:59:54 > 1:59:58have the women playing the first and fifth stone, the last stone and the
1:59:58 > 2:00:02men playing two, three and four. The Russians do it the other way round.
2:00:02 > 2:00:09Olympic Athlete from Russia, sorry.
2:00:12 > 2:00:13It's not a full
2:00:13 > 2:00:19It's not a full house this evening, Korea were in the Roundhouse
2:00:19 > 2:00:24competition, and they were in the round robin. We had a semifinal this
2:00:24 > 2:00:28morning, Canada already through to the gold-medal match tomorrow. The
2:00:28 > 2:00:39winners will take on Norway for the runs medal -- bronze medal, the
2:00:39 > 2:00:49losers, apologies, from this match. That's tonight, or tomorrow, for
2:00:49 > 2:00:55you, it all very confusing!A nicer stone there from Jenny Perret, she
2:00:55 > 2:01:00actually tapped at the back stone, if that had gone over the back line,
2:01:00 > 2:01:02the throwing stones would have been removed from play and the
2:01:02 > 2:01:08pre-position one replaced. They used the maximum tolerance for the shot
2:01:08 > 2:01:16and goddesses the good position.-- got it in a good position.
2:01:16 > 2:01:23Krushelnitskiy has struggled with his shots this week, a little bit
2:01:23 > 2:01:34down on his
2:01:35 > 2:01:39draws. It will be key if they can make those first stones, those draw
2:01:39 > 2:01:45shots. Then they could give Martin Rios and Jenny Perret a bit of a
2:01:45 > 2:01:51headache.He's become a bit of a character, Martin. He's had his
2:01:51 > 2:01:57troubles on the ice this week. Kicked a couple of stones, I say
2:01:57 > 2:02:02kicked, just touched them with his foot and brushed them on occasion.
2:02:02 > 2:02:09It's a bit of an art sweeping your own stone, tippy toe around them,
2:02:09 > 2:02:16particularly when it gets crowded. That one has just over cold little
2:02:16 > 2:02:22bit. Didn't have a great deal of rotation on it. When the stone is
2:02:22 > 2:02:27spinning, it can drift off a little bit. You want to get a good
2:02:27 > 2:02:31rotation, three or four rotations for the full length of the ice. That
2:02:31 > 2:02:40one was maybe about one another. -- one and a half.The Limerick
2:02:40 > 2:02:42athletes from Russia, like quite a few of the teams including the
2:02:42 > 2:02:48British teams, the men and women's team competition starting on
2:02:48 > 2:02:53Wednesday, they have been preparing in Japan. A few days before this
2:02:53 > 2:02:59mixed doubles.
2:02:59 > 2:03:03mixed doubles. This has still got plenty on it.This is looking a
2:03:03 > 2:03:08little bit pacey. They would have liked it to light against the yellow
2:03:08 > 2:03:17stone at the top of the button, so probably six feet too much on that
2:03:17 > 2:03:25one.They are just struggling with the pace a little bit and both ends.
2:03:25 > 2:03:33The coach looks a little frustrated, shall we say. It's very quiet in
2:03:33 > 2:03:38here this evening. When there's only one match on, when there's four,
2:03:38 > 2:03:44there's always shouting, a bit of noise and atmosphere. Just all eyes
2:03:44 > 2:03:48on this particular sheet in front of this, right in front of where we're
2:03:48 > 2:03:52sitting, we've got a great view. There's positive only having one
2:03:52 > 2:03:55game, you can have a bit of crowd interaction between the games, a bit
2:03:55 > 2:04:00of the sick. That sort of thing. I didn't actually notice -- bit of
2:04:00 > 2:04:08music. I was organising the Olympic Games, I would do that.Martin Rios
2:04:08 > 2:04:18trying to come back, a lot more ice this time. Not actually trying to go
2:04:18 > 2:04:21on to the red stone but more likely onto the face of the yellow and line
2:04:21 > 2:04:29them up Onto the red stone.Quite short of speed. Was that the
2:04:29 > 2:04:35deliberate guard out there or has it come up short?I think it's quite a
2:04:35 > 2:04:37bit shorter than what they would have liked going by the body
2:04:37 > 2:04:46language. A big sweep, throws it, jumps up and sweeps it.Plenty of
2:04:46 > 2:04:51ice, is that the first time down that side?I was about to say that,
2:04:51 > 2:04:56most of the play has been down the anticlockwise rotation. If you
2:04:56 > 2:05:00rotate it anticlockwise, it runs straight and turns to the left
2:05:00 > 2:05:04whereas if you come on a clockwise rotation like Martin Rios, it will
2:05:04 > 2:05:10do the same but turn right.Trying to raise this in. And got it, well
2:05:10 > 2:05:18done. That's an excellent shot. She's pretty good at this,
2:05:18 > 2:05:22Bryzgalova. As you said, it's actually the men normally, John
2:05:22 > 2:05:28Morris is expert at these kind of shots, but she has done well.
2:05:28 > 2:05:32There's no way that was nominated shot! They were trying to peel the
2:05:32 > 2:05:37two guards there, I would say. If they were going for that, the real
2:05:37 > 2:05:40risk would have been hitting the yellow guard onto the yellow stone
2:05:40 > 2:05:45on the top of the button and jamming it on the red and leading two
2:05:45 > 2:05:53behind. Far too risky shot to call. They over curled and got lucky.
2:05:53 > 2:06:01Lucky or not, it certainly improved the situation for them. Martin Rios
2:06:01 > 2:06:12trying to come back in, close on that road.-- red. A really nice try
2:06:12 > 2:06:19lair, nice line.A slight tap back but a good position, still roam
2:06:19 > 2:06:28between the two stones.That was Sebastien stock, the two-time
2:06:28 > 2:06:37European champion for Germany, coaching Switzerland at clinics.
2:06:37 > 2:06:44coaching Switzerland at clinics. -- at the Olympics.A similar draw for
2:06:44 > 2:06:52her head to try and tapped that? They're going to follow that one
2:06:52 > 2:06:57down from Martin Rios and tapped it back, try and create space to score
2:06:57 > 2:07:03on this end because it's very difficult at the moment. A really
2:07:03 > 2:07:10good, strong sweeper, excellent... Both of them going to try.An
2:07:10 > 2:07:16excellent position to get full power through the brush head. Actually
2:07:16 > 2:07:21probably overslept that in the end. One of the dangers in jumping up,
2:07:21 > 2:07:25two players out there, you can't really judge the line. If you have
2:07:25 > 2:07:28four players coming have the luxury of have on someone watching the line
2:07:28 > 2:07:38all the time. They over kicked that one of it.By the time they stopped
2:07:38 > 2:07:40sweeping and they realised the line, it's too late to do anything about
2:07:40 > 2:07:45it. With the hammer here, they would have wanted to be in a better
2:07:45 > 2:07:52position than this. The way the stones are lined up there, if
2:07:52 > 2:07:55Switzerland are feeling a little bit frisky, they might be able to make a
2:07:55 > 2:08:01double takeout for the two reds and for themselves in a strong position.
2:08:01 > 2:08:09This look like a takeout.
2:08:13 > 2:08:22This is hanging high. He's leaving it alone. It's just going to catch
2:08:22 > 2:08:30and that's improving the situation dramatically for
2:08:30 > 2:08:34dramatically for Olympics athletes from Russia. They could have put
2:08:34 > 2:08:39some more weight on that and given themselves a bit more chance to make
2:08:39 > 2:08:51it but a bit more tentative there. This is an opportunity, not that he
2:08:51 > 2:08:55has this is only been playing the draw with that level of accuracy,
2:08:55 > 2:08:58but it's not a particularly difficult shots and they will pick
2:08:58 > 2:09:07up two. Easier said than done! Certainly is. This stone has a bit
2:09:07 > 2:09:09more room for error than your bog-standard drawdown onto the
2:09:09 > 2:09:18button. They can use their stone on the button to take the speed out of
2:09:18 > 2:09:26it, but the backstop. That looks like it will do nicely. So, we're
2:09:26 > 2:09:39tied after two. It's never a textbook start. We have
2:09:39 > 2:09:46had some shots that are good and some that are less good. It's been a
2:09:46 > 2:09:50quiet start. Almost reflecting the atmosphere in here. Needs to get
2:09:50 > 2:09:55going with that. You don't get too much hollering going on but when
2:09:55 > 2:10:04Korea were playing, a lot of locals were buying tickets hoping that they
2:10:04 > 2:10:09would have made it through to the semifinals. They started pretty
2:10:09 > 2:10:15well, the first two or three games. I think after three or four
2:10:15 > 2:10:20sessions, we were looking at the four teams and he said, we weren't
2:10:20 > 2:10:24trying to be clever, but we thought there would be no way, Russia,
2:10:24 > 2:10:30Switzerland, Canada, they look like the best teams. The world rankings
2:10:30 > 2:10:39words suggesting that as well. The OAR team being number one in the
2:10:39 > 2:10:42world, in the mixed doubles tour this season. Norway were second and
2:10:42 > 2:10:49the Swiss team were third. So true to form, really. In the final
2:10:49 > 2:10:56stages, we would never write off the Canadians, two Olympic gold
2:10:56 > 2:10:59medallists and already in the final for this game.Even though they were
2:10:59 > 2:11:04the least experienced pair played together, competitively rest of the
2:11:04 > 2:11:11teams here, that -- compared to the rest of the teams, that experience
2:11:11 > 2:11:16that they bought individually, they ended up head and shoulders ahead of
2:11:16 > 2:11:24everyone else. So far, they are in the gold-medal match, Norway the
2:11:24 > 2:11:34only ones who have defeated Canada in the round robin. Kaitlyn Lawes
2:11:34 > 2:11:41and John Morris, the Canada team. I think John Morris has become a real
2:11:41 > 2:11:50fan of mixed doubles. Kaitlyn Lawes was a late replacement for Rachel
2:11:50 > 2:11:59Holman, who is skippering the Canadian women's team.
2:11:59 > 2:12:01Canadian women's team. It's worked out very well for the mixed pair,
2:12:01 > 2:12:05though.Interesting to see some of the nations taking a different
2:12:05 > 2:12:11approach to this. Some of the players out here such as the
2:12:11 > 2:12:15American duo, they'll be taking part of the team event as well. But
2:12:15 > 2:12:18Rachel Holman deciding that it would be better to focus on the team
2:12:18 > 2:12:25format. And John Morris found a new partner and Kaitlyn Lawes isn't a
2:12:25 > 2:12:32bad signing.
2:12:38 > 2:12:41Here is Bryzgalova, try to come around and freeze on that yellow
2:12:41 > 2:12:43stone on the button.
2:12:48 > 2:12:56They'd like to get it down. Great sweep by Democrat, I think he's just
2:12:56 > 2:13:00got that far enough to be in a shot position. -- great sweep by
2:13:00 > 2:13:07Krushelnitskiy.You can see how hard they're working, Martin Rios,
2:13:07 > 2:13:14Krushelnitskiy. They're wearing T-shirts as well. We're wrapped up a
2:13:14 > 2:13:20peer, the cold air being blown into the arena. It's certainly getting
2:13:20 > 2:13:27warm down there.
2:13:27 > 2:13:31This is the real feature of mixed doubles for me. He will take the
2:13:31 > 2:13:41guard away here. That line, that betrayal of stones.-- that betrayal
2:13:41 > 2:13:46of stones. They visit didn't like the situation, trying to change
2:13:46 > 2:13:51things up a bit. We have not seen Martin Rios be particularly accurate
2:13:51 > 2:13:57with these big weight takeouts but pretty good job here. Still leaves
2:13:57 > 2:14:02that don't on the centre line, that's the only criticism of that
2:14:02 > 2:14:14shot. So a chance to bury another one behind.
2:14:14 > 2:14:28one behind.Anastasia Bryzgalova. Sleep, sleep! -- sweep, sweet!So
2:14:28 > 2:14:35the Russian for sweep is sweet! It is funny how the English terms for
2:14:35 > 2:14:41the instructions.
2:14:41 > 2:14:46the instructions. Was she trying to catch her own stone there?I think
2:14:46 > 2:14:51there was a little bit of a contingency in the end and they got
2:14:51 > 2:14:56stuck in no man's land and drifted right through. Important to have a
2:14:56 > 2:15:01plan B on this shots. But they really didn't...Wanted to be on top
2:15:01 > 2:15:07of the first red. When you throw that weight, the stones tend to snap
2:15:07 > 2:15:10and break a little bit later on. That's what caused Russia the
2:15:10 > 2:15:19problem there.
2:15:20 > 2:15:23What Martin Rios has been good at this week is on occasions when
2:15:23 > 2:15:29Switzerland have been two, three or fool-mac down in the latter stages,
2:15:29 > 2:15:35coming up with the kind of moving stones around and working the
2:15:35 > 2:15:43angles. Under pressure when that clock is ticking, each team gets 22
2:15:43 > 2:15:48minutes of thinking time, time between playing shop, you've got to
2:15:48 > 2:15:53make your mind up quickly what you're going to play, you've got to
2:15:53 > 2:15:58see it quickly and execute the shot. I think Martin Rios is a clever and
2:15:58 > 2:16:03crafty player, moving the stones around to get the angles at best
2:16:03 > 2:16:09benefit Switzerland. That is very much 's game. Martin Rios is
2:16:09 > 2:16:15actually a very good player in the team format. He played second for
2:16:15 > 2:16:20the Swiss team and had a lot of success, won some competitions on
2:16:20 > 2:16:25the world curling tour as well. He has had a bit of a rejuvenation
2:16:25 > 2:16:29since starting to take on the mixed format. And then moving into the
2:16:29 > 2:16:37mixed doubles as well. This is exactly the same shot, really, as
2:16:37 > 2:16:43Anastasia Bryzgalova played. The stones have moved over half a stone,
2:16:43 > 2:16:47maybe, but you'd expect them to make an adjustment to the speed.Gliding
2:16:47 > 2:16:56on to their own red. Yes, very good. That is starting to make things
2:16:56 > 2:17:01difficult for Switzerland. All of a sudden, they are starting to look
2:17:01 > 2:17:07scared, Switzerland. Things are scary for them.It is so important
2:17:07 > 2:17:17to have your stone above the T-line, the centre line going away from us.
2:17:17 > 2:17:23That is an almost perfect shot. The great thing about it is that two red
2:17:23 > 2:17:26stones are bang in line straight up the centre line onto the yellow
2:17:26 > 2:17:31stone said it is difficult to remove them and difficult for Switzerland
2:17:31 > 2:17:40to score here.Well, he's going to try to move them around.
2:17:42 > 2:17:48A beauty!Called the angle well, close to see who is lying shot. They
2:17:48 > 2:17:55are having a look.Martin Rios could not have done more. He is cutting a
2:17:55 > 2:17:59frustrated figure but that is a fantastic shot by Martin Rios.Yeah,
2:17:59 > 2:18:06that was starting to look ominous for Switzerland. Again, we will very
2:18:06 > 2:18:10quickly explain what you don't do in mixed doubles is blank and end
2:18:10 > 2:18:15because you lose the hammer. Any normal team game, if the end isn't
2:18:15 > 2:18:21working out, you can blank and carry over the hammer. That role has been
2:18:21 > 2:18:27introduced from the get go to try to invoke a more high-scoring game, try
2:18:27 > 2:18:31to move away from those bank ends and make every end really
2:18:31 > 2:18:37interesting.
2:18:40 > 2:18:47They can still use that stone at the back, just to make sure that Jenny
2:18:47 > 2:18:54Perret... I wouldn't say she is the best with the final stone, she's
2:18:54 > 2:19:00been up and down but she wouldn't be here if she hadn't done very well.
2:19:00 > 2:19:04That is going to ask a question. I am not sure who is lying second
2:19:04 > 2:19:09shot. They are both having a look, the Swiss are having a very close
2:19:09 > 2:19:14look.I don't think it matters too much, the only option they have is
2:19:14 > 2:19:19to fold it down and score one but a very nice shot by OAR and good
2:19:19 > 2:19:22awareness. If they'd dropped it short of the T-line, they could have
2:19:22 > 2:19:32been a chance for two. To them. They are forcing Switzerland to draw for
2:19:32 > 2:19:37one.I was going to say, she can be wrong on both sides and lose two.
2:19:37 > 2:19:48This has got to be just right. So, Jenny Perret... Going to try to
2:19:48 > 2:19:55follow that in.No, I think the first word out of Martin Rios was
2:19:55 > 2:20:02Mac face is never. It doesn't look good from where we are sitting,
2:20:02 > 2:20:08either.They are just standing back and begging for it it is trying. It
2:20:08 > 2:20:18is curling now. She has just about done enough. Just about. Well, a
2:20:18 > 2:20:23long way down there, she was worried, Martin Rios was worried.
2:20:23 > 2:20:31The heart rate, I bet, was rising.A little fist pump saying well done
2:20:31 > 2:20:37but it was close. Anyway, Switzerland picked up just the one,
2:20:37 > 2:20:46leading 3-2 after three ends. The hammer now moves to OAR.
2:20:52 > 2:20:57He is a great character. I have a lot of fun watching him. I've been
2:20:57 > 2:21:01worried a couple of times he was going to break his brush he was
2:21:01 > 2:21:06putting in so much effort, leaning so heavily. Who said curling wasn't
2:21:06 > 2:21:12a physical sport?I think Martin might need a change of T-shirt at
2:21:12 > 2:21:19half-time.
2:21:20 > 2:21:29So, here we go, fourth end. OAR, they are playing the red stones with
2:21:29 > 2:21:34the hammer, meaning they play stone -- the play stone is at the back of
2:21:34 > 2:21:41the house. Normal shot here is tried to draw right up against that red
2:21:41 > 2:21:49stone. I'm already looking at this... We have a great view where
2:21:49 > 2:21:57we are sitting. This is over curling. Maybe a little bit short of
2:21:57 > 2:22:06speed and it just shows how much curl there is on the size.Once it
2:22:06 > 2:22:13starts to slow, it really is turning. And the ice conditions can
2:22:13 > 2:22:16be different from one arena to the next, even one ice rink to another,
2:22:16 > 2:22:24if you're playing a club at home, then you have to get really close to
2:22:24 > 2:22:29the guard to hide it in behind. In the arena, you can pass by a good
2:22:29 > 2:22:34foot and it still Bankstown and gets in there. And each sheet is
2:22:34 > 2:22:40different. The semifinal was played over the far side, and we were
2:22:40 > 2:22:44saying sometimes the outside sheet can played differently to the inside
2:22:44 > 2:22:52ones.There is a lock to take into consideration is. There is the
2:22:52 > 2:23:00stones as well, which we will go into.
2:23:02 > 2:23:10Swept hard by her husband, keeping an eye. Your feet can't touch the
2:23:10 > 2:23:15stone.
2:23:17 > 2:23:21stone. Often Martin Rios is sweeping then he has to get back down the
2:23:21 > 2:23:27other end, get his composure back, heartrate down. He needs a bit of
2:23:27 > 2:23:31finis to deliver the stone. Actually, we were saying that Martin
2:23:31 > 2:23:38Rios is sweating but he is sweeping more stones than anyone, he is
2:23:38 > 2:23:43sweeping every single stone. Jenny is getting a bit of a holiday out
2:23:43 > 2:23:49there, really. She is keeping an eye on the line. The role of skip. This
2:23:49 > 2:24:00one just curling. Just jamming against their own.
2:24:02 > 2:24:07This is where Martin Rios excels. We have seen him do so already in this
2:24:07 > 2:24:16match.Starting to get if you stones in here. Once we have had five play,
2:24:16 > 2:24:18the takeout is possible.
2:24:27 > 2:24:37Anastasia Bryzgalova, going to bring another one in.Yeah, going to come
2:24:37 > 2:24:41down and tap those yellow stone is lined up, and lie in front of them.
2:24:41 > 2:24:48By doing so, we call that freeze, you freeze against the opposition
2:24:48 > 2:24:53stone and it makes it difficult to remove. Russia are in a stronger
2:24:53 > 2:24:55position at the moment.
2:24:59 > 2:25:08Needs to get into the nose or even inside the yellow. Witty good. Just
2:25:08 > 2:25:13nudges the back yellow. I just think she wanted it further over because
2:25:13 > 2:25:19Switzerland can try to make a freeze of their own. It is all getting very
2:25:19 > 2:25:22intricate and close quarters in there.
2:25:28 > 2:25:39So, Martin Rios again needs Jenny Perret to give him the line.
2:25:45 > 2:25:51Not a dissimilar shot to last time but he is staying off this one and
2:25:51 > 2:25:59now thinking about it.That looked heavy. 13 points seven on the clock,
2:25:59 > 2:26:06I'll tell you about that in a minute. Nicely done, really good
2:26:06 > 2:26:13shot by Martin Rios and that has really turned the end on its head.
2:26:13 > 2:26:18Almost perfect shot from Anastasia Bryzgalova has been punished by
2:26:18 > 2:26:24Switzerland, and it can turn around that quickly. We saw 13 points seven
2:26:24 > 2:26:29on the shot clock. That is the time between the two red hog lines which
2:26:29 > 2:26:32gives us a general idea of the speed of the eyes and we are thinking
2:26:32 > 2:26:43about 14 seconds for a draw that would land on the T-line.
2:26:44 > 2:26:51They are going to movies around a little?They are, give it a bit of a
2:26:51 > 2:26:59splat and see how many yellow stone is they can get going.
2:27:00 > 2:27:08Is it going to get past the guard? It is...They got one out of there.
2:27:08 > 2:27:12At a bad result and they are still sitting on the side of the yellow
2:27:12 > 2:27:16stone. -- not a bad result.
2:27:23 > 2:27:27When they are looking to hit it further on the outside to try to
2:27:27 > 2:27:34spring the yellow at the top of the button, and one of the main
2:27:34 > 2:27:40strategies, if you like, of mixed doubles curling is if you have the
2:27:40 > 2:27:43last stone advantage, you want to give yourself space to get one in
2:27:43 > 2:27:47there and score but when you don't have the last stone, like
2:27:47 > 2:27:52Switzerland, they want to keep everything closed down and keep the
2:27:52 > 2:27:55scoring error small for the opposition which is what Martin Rios
2:27:55 > 2:28:03and Jenny Perret are doing very well here.
2:28:06 > 2:28:10So, should have a pretty good idea of this shot. He has just played it,
2:28:10 > 2:28:21after all.He is playing very well already, Martin Rios.
2:28:23 > 2:28:30Positions them nicely between the two red stones.
2:28:30 > 2:28:32two red stones.A little look of consternation between the married
2:28:32 > 2:28:38Russian par. Just trying to work out what to do here and this is one of
2:28:38 > 2:28:43the features of mixed doubles. Even this early on, fourth end, you can't
2:28:43 > 2:28:48take too much time. Each team does have a time-out and each team has a
2:28:48 > 2:28:55power-play, which we will talk about in the second half. In the later
2:28:55 > 2:29:02ends, each team has a chance to try to score more heavily, we will talk
2:29:02 > 2:29:07about it later. They have to make up their minds reasonably quickly.I am
2:29:07 > 2:29:11not too sure, to be honest, they've got a bit of work to do but
2:29:11 > 2:29:16ultimately what they want to achieve is make sure they score here and
2:29:16 > 2:29:21they don't want to fall two or three points behind. They will definitely
2:29:21 > 2:29:26play takeout and try to burst things open. They've got options to get the
2:29:26 > 2:29:32guard back, hit their own on the yellow and try to open it up that
2:29:32 > 2:29:37way. None of those options look appealing but it looks like they
2:29:37 > 2:29:47will go from -- for the run back up Sharon -- for the run back option.
2:29:47 > 2:29:51Which means they will hit the yellow stone which has been sitting up
2:29:51 > 2:29:55there since the beginning, and raise it up into the house. And cross
2:29:55 > 2:30:04their fingers a little bit. No.
2:30:05 > 2:30:12One is not two, but not a good result.
2:30:12 > 2:30:19result. The situation for them, when the hammer is one which you try to
2:30:19 > 2:30:24engineer, an opportunity to pick up two or three, a much better
2:30:24 > 2:30:27opportunity for Switzerland here. I think this is where the dynamic
2:30:27 > 2:30:33between the two teams,, if Jenny Perret doesn't pick up on what
2:30:33 > 2:30:40Martin says, it's all been in vain. Absolutely, and it's an interesting
2:30:40 > 2:30:44internal pressure it puts on the player to finish the job off when
2:30:44 > 2:30:48you've got someone out there who is playing extremely well, making all
2:30:48 > 2:30:53the shots. It's not like you were to be the one to let the heart of down.
2:30:53 > 2:30:58Unlike a skipper who has got to stones to play at the end, you have
2:30:58 > 2:31:04got one stone, then your partner plays two, three and four, and then
2:31:04 > 2:31:08you have got to wait. The gap between the stones you deliver is a
2:31:08 > 2:31:15good few minutes. And then you've got to play a big shot, not easy.I
2:31:15 > 2:31:18got to say, Martin Rios look like a man on a mission there tonight.
2:31:18 > 2:31:23Extremely focused. I think he's giving Jenny Perret a lot of
2:31:23 > 2:31:26confidence out there as well. Looking good for settling at the
2:31:26 > 2:31:33moment. -- Switzerland at the moment.Switzerland have a stone
2:31:33 > 2:31:40right on the button.
2:31:40 > 2:31:43right on the button.Lying two and three but they're trying to protect
2:31:43 > 2:31:48the situation. This is perfect. It looks like it has over macro to a
2:31:48 > 2:31:51little bit but it's a very clever shot because they've actually
2:31:51 > 2:31:59guarded the correct side of the yellow stone. The top of the fourth
2:31:59 > 2:32:08it will go to the Top of the red. I just looked up to see him coming
2:32:08 > 2:32:11down the ice towards me and I wondered what he was doing! Giving
2:32:11 > 2:32:17away one is the best of the bad situation for OAR and as we reach
2:32:17 > 2:32:25the halfway point, Switzerland Willem Nel have a, I can just
2:32:25 > 2:32:29checking -- Switzerland now have a double. I'm just checking. There's
2:32:29 > 2:32:34some repairs being made on the ice. Switzerland have now got a two shot
2:32:34 > 2:32:36lead.
2:32:39 > 2:32:45As they take a break and repair the ice, just a reminder that the Great
2:32:45 > 2:32:53Britain team sadly missed out on just one spot to get into the mixed
2:32:53 > 2:33:01doubles. The men's and women's teams start on Wednesday, and they're
2:33:01 > 2:33:04aiming to do better than bronze here in Pyeongchang.
2:33:12 > 2:33:16We went into Sochi as current world champions, and I guess, having that
2:33:16 > 2:33:19on your CV is always going to make it a little bit tougher for you.
2:33:19 > 2:33:26You're always going to add some pressure. There were expectations
2:33:26 > 2:33:33but it's probably more that we put them on ourselves because it was who
2:33:33 > 2:33:37was going to go and get it for that week. They fought so hard and this
2:33:37 > 2:33:45potentially their last stone of this much. It's got a chance. And that's
2:33:45 > 2:33:53a nice shot from Eve Muirhead. The pressure made us know that we could
2:33:53 > 2:33:57perform at that level, we were the best team in the world we were
2:33:57 > 2:34:02capable of hitting the podium.A big shot here. This to close out the
2:34:02 > 2:34:08match against Great Britain. They have worked it hard. It's pulling up
2:34:08 > 2:34:15but will it get there? It is! And Canada have won it.When we lost
2:34:15 > 2:34:18that semifinal, I'm not going to like it was probably the most
2:34:18 > 2:34:24devastating to the seat of the career.Losing the semifinal was the
2:34:24 > 2:34:30hardest loss, and at the time, we thought it was a quick turnover but
2:34:30 > 2:34:35that's probably what helped us in the end.
2:34:35 > 2:34:43They are the world champions. And now they could be the Olympic bronze
2:34:43 > 2:34:47medallist. The stone will get there and the brushes go in the air and
2:34:47 > 2:34:50Britain have won the bronze medal. To come home with a medal was
2:34:50 > 2:34:55outstanding. I'm still really pleased with that. But I now I think
2:34:55 > 2:34:59I've got a taste of that Olympic podium and although want to do is go
2:34:59 > 2:35:05up it. -- all I wanted to do is go at it.We have got some unfinished
2:35:05 > 2:35:08business and getting the bronze medal was amazing but you always
2:35:08 > 2:35:13want to do better. If we have to break it down into each game, and
2:35:13 > 2:35:16then want to get the play-off status, that will be a brand-new
2:35:16 > 2:35:23competition.We feel like we're in a good place at the moment. We feel
2:35:23 > 2:35:27like we have been working hard and that's something we have to
2:35:27 > 2:35:32constantly say to people, curling is much harder than it looks. We would
2:35:32 > 2:35:36not have to train so much to be at the top of the game if it wasn't. We
2:35:36 > 2:35:41have great win at the European Championships.Scotland, Gold
2:35:41 > 2:35:46medallists here in Switzerland.The gold-medal at the Olympics is the
2:35:46 > 2:35:53only gold medal I'm missing in my collection so it would mean a lot of
2:35:53 > 2:35:58hard work has paid off for me. I have put in a tonne of work to get
2:35:58 > 2:36:01to the position I'm in just now. To stand on top of the podium would be
2:36:01 > 2:36:08something extra special.
2:36:09 > 2:36:14Eve Muirhead and her crew, her Rigg, very experienced. Their third
2:36:14 > 2:36:23Olympics. That brand-new men's team is there, including two of her
2:36:23 > 2:36:28brothers, Thomas and Glen Muirhead. And another set of brothers, Cammy
2:36:28 > 2:36:35Smith and Kyle Smith. They start on she night, Wednesday morning. The
2:36:35 > 2:36:43men a Italy and -- the men play Switzerland and the women's early
2:36:43 > 2:36:48match is against the Olympic athletes of Russia.
2:36:48 > 2:36:56Even Mr T from the 18 has got into this! That is sport, the realms of
2:36:56 > 2:37:03sports spread.Your mother-in-law is a curler?Yes, she loved your
2:37:03 > 2:37:05impression yesterday. There's something for everyone in winter
2:37:05 > 2:37:09spots. I know that the Scots are love mad on curling. Every weekend
2:37:09 > 2:37:16you can go to an ice rink and the curling. It's almost like an
2:37:16 > 2:37:22religion of sport.Do you play?No, but I have a local pond near my
2:37:22 > 2:37:27house that they used to use for curling. It is everywhere. We are
2:37:27 > 2:37:34going to join this tense mixed doubles match again, a place in the
2:37:34 > 2:37:40final against Canada, alongside Logan Gray is Steve Cram. Steve, do
2:37:40 > 2:37:44they take their own stones out there with them?
2:37:46 > 2:37:52That would be a bit of excess
2:37:53 > 2:37:55baggage, 20 kilograms each! There's a lot of funding for curling but I'm
2:37:55 > 2:38:00not sure it would stretch to that. These stones are here for all the
2:38:00 > 2:38:03teams to use, they all get to practice with them beforehand and
2:38:03 > 2:38:09work out which stones they like as well. Each stone is individually
2:38:09 > 2:38:20numbered. I think you set out last year, -- it was sent out last year,
2:38:20 > 2:38:31this information. Just to continue the family thing, Logan Gray, here,
2:38:31 > 2:38:35is the brother of Lauren Gray who was in the film you just watched. It
2:38:35 > 2:38:39used to be the other way around! Laura needs to be Logan Gray's
2:38:39 > 2:38:44sister but she's kind of overtaking me now in the performance stakes now
2:38:44 > 2:38:52in the last two years!
2:38:53 > 2:38:57I know you will be looking forward to Lauren competing this Wednesday
2:38:57 > 2:39:02like everybody else. The men and women competition getting underway,
2:39:02 > 2:39:08both British teams in action on day one, Valentine's Day. #, love
2:39:08 > 2:39:17curling!Base of the teams around here this afternoon getting their
2:39:17 > 2:39:23first taste of the ice and they are getting familiar with their
2:39:23 > 2:39:31surroundings. They have a few days of following some pregames training
2:39:31 > 2:39:36in Japan.
2:39:37 > 2:39:43in Japan. So, so far so good for Martin Rios. What was interesting in
2:39:43 > 2:39:45the semifinal this morning, the first few stones after the break
2:39:45 > 2:39:56were awful. I just wondering if the break isn't to anyone's liking but
2:39:56 > 2:40:00so far so good here.Doesn't seem to be happening this time. I was
2:40:00 > 2:40:04watching this morning and having a good chuckle to myself because it's
2:40:04 > 2:40:09something you see all the time. You have that half-time break, but no
2:40:09 > 2:40:15players on the ice and the ice gets a chance to chill again and it gets
2:40:15 > 2:40:21a bit faster and it catches everybody out without fail.Again,
2:40:21 > 2:40:27we're always watchers that people might be watching curling for the
2:40:27 > 2:40:31first -- conscious that people might be watching curling for the first
2:40:31 > 2:40:35time, this is mixed doubles, the first time in the Olympics. Eight
2:40:35 > 2:40:40ends, as opposed to ten in the other competition. The ice is so
2:40:40 > 2:40:46important, talking about that little break. They
2:40:49 > 2:40:53break. They were out preparing the ice, can you explain why that
2:40:53 > 2:40:58happens?If you took that curling stone out onto the local skating
2:40:58 > 2:41:03rink, they won't go anywhere. They will not go very ska at all. Skating
2:41:03 > 2:41:10ice is a bit warmer and has a very flat surface. Curling is different,
2:41:10 > 2:41:14you can from the BCA a sheen on the ice, and there are little what we
2:41:14 > 2:41:19call -- you can probably see a bit of a sheen on the ice, and there are
2:41:19 > 2:41:24little what we call pebbles, they come from a watering can kind of
2:41:24 > 2:41:28thing, they spray the ice and the droplets freeze on the ice and that
2:41:28 > 2:41:36is what the stones run on, and that is what curling is, running these
2:41:36 > 2:41:43bumps down so the stones go further and straighter.If you're
2:41:43 > 2:41:52interested, as well, don't forget the BBC website get
2:41:52 > 2:41:57the BBC website get inspired, maybe you can find out more about curling.
2:41:57 > 2:42:06I know there are plenty of opportunities around. I'm always
2:42:06 > 2:42:13worried that he's going to slip, Rios. I've described him as not
2:42:13 > 2:42:22being the lightest on his feet but he's certainly very effective.
2:42:22 > 2:42:28That's another big shot from Martin Rios there. Sometimes a little bit
2:42:28 > 2:42:40wary, a couple of stones kicking around the house.
2:42:40 > 2:42:45This semifinal will continue on the red button. We have naturally got
2:42:45 > 2:42:50proper curling stones here in the studio, and did you know that a
2:42:50 > 2:42:53curling stone has a life span of up to 50 years, all made from
2:42:53 > 2:42:54curling stone has a life span of up to 50 years, all made from granite
2:42:54 > 2:42:59in Scotland and they last a long time, people use them as doorstops.
2:42:59 > 2:43:06That's a random fact!Sport and household goods.We want to get
2:43:06 > 2:43:13light of the men's moguls, the three finals are starting. Curling will go
2:43:13 > 2:43:17to the red button. We will go back to that later on to see if
2:43:17 > 2:43:21Switzerland can go through against Canada. The moguls, two jumps, they
2:43:21 > 2:43:27get marks for turning and jumps and speed is also a factor. 20 will
2:43:27 > 2:43:32start the first final, 12 going to the second final and Matt Chilton is
2:43:32 > 2:43:41with the moguls mingle. -- moguls lingo.
2:43:41 > 2:43:44Thank you, good evening from the Phoenix Snow Park. Conditions good
2:43:44 > 2:43:48for the first of three finals. We start off with 20, who will be
2:43:48 > 2:43:53whittled down for 12 and then the super final will involve just six
2:43:53 > 2:43:58men who will do battle for the medals. The judges are in position.
2:43:58 > 2:44:02Five of them looking at the terms which constituted 60% of the overall
2:44:02 > 2:44:08score. Two of them looking at the air. Two kickers, one at the top and
2:44:08 > 2:44:15one at the bottom. And then the time also makes up 20% of the score. The
2:44:15 > 2:44:23pace time is 24.27 seconds. So unique to be close to that to have a
2:44:23 > 2:44:30chance. So, the first of the 20 men dropping in is James Matheson, the
2:44:30 > 2:44:3722-year-old Australian. One of two Australians in this final. He was
2:44:37 > 2:44:43the last man in, he just qualified by the skin of his teeth. That was
2:44:43 > 2:44:46following the second qualification man earlier. Last in and therefore
2:44:46 > 2:44:59first out. Final mother one of the 2018 Olympic men's moguls.
2:45:00 > 2:45:08He has tend terms to begin with. Then he goes aerial. Executed
2:45:08 > 2:45:12beautifully and these are lovely turns from the Australian. Has not
2:45:12 > 2:45:18put a foot wrong war yet. Then first mistake, lost control of the left 's
2:45:18 > 2:45:30key. Off axis of the second kicker and the speed is 26.33 seconds. We
2:45:30 > 2:45:35will see more bare-chested Australians and faster runs. I
2:45:35 > 2:45:41wonder how long they will last. James Matheson was there to salute
2:45:41 > 2:45:51their courage, the Australian fans, topless at the course. He gives them
2:45:51 > 2:45:58something to cheer about. They
2:45:58 > 2:46:00something to cheer about. They also have Matt Graham to come, the
2:46:00 > 2:46:09Australian. That was his second jump. The wind was a factor here and
2:46:09 > 2:46:16you might have seen the women's slopestyle affected by the breeze
2:46:16 > 2:46:25but it is less of an issue for the mogulists. James Matheson six starts
2:46:25 > 2:46:34this first final. -- kick-starts. Nobuyuki Nishi is fired up and ready
2:46:34 > 2:46:44to go. He is a live wire in the bumps. Away he goes. Click a number
2:46:44 > 2:46:53one off axis seven and look at him, unbelievable pace! He is really
2:46:53 > 2:46:58motoring and he has lost control! And he will not be continuing in the
2:46:58 > 2:47:03Olympic final. That is the end of his Olympics barring a miracle
2:47:03 > 2:47:09because only 12 will advance from the stage. He took it on, to his
2:47:09 > 2:47:15credit. It was maximum attack at the top of the track. He really opened
2:47:15 > 2:47:22up a huge amount of speed after his first jump, which was an off axis
2:47:22 > 2:47:27360 but he slightly lost control halfway through the midsection, the
2:47:27 > 2:47:30money terms and couldn't get it back. He was being left behind the
2:47:30 > 2:47:36skis and eventually decided that self-preservation was the best way
2:47:36 > 2:47:53out. So, James Matheson leads so far. These score will be relevant
2:47:53 > 2:48:01for Nobuyuki Nishi. The Japanese still with Sho Endo to come. And
2:48:01 > 2:48:05Daichi Hara, and Ikuma Horishima, one of the precompetition
2:48:05 > 2:48:14favourites. Ikuma Horishima Bob Champion last year. Nobuyuki Nishi,
2:48:14 > 2:48:22photographs of friends, and emotional time for him. He will bow
2:48:22 > 2:48:29out of the Games now.
2:48:29 > 2:48:32out of the Games now. Jimi Salonen next to go, the 23-year-old from
2:48:32 > 2:48:42Finland. Could go for a Cork 180 in the first kicker, let's see what he
2:48:42 > 2:48:47does. Write down the middle, Cork 1080 attempted and landed and on he
2:48:47 > 2:48:56goes. Good start for Jimi Salonen. Now he needs to make the second
2:48:56 > 2:49:00landing, he has done well with the first kicker and the mid-runtimes
2:49:00 > 2:49:06have been good. He is over and down and through in a fast time, 25.16
2:49:06 > 2:49:14seconds. That is more than a second quicker than James Matheson, who
2:49:14 > 2:49:23leads the way. So, Jimi Salonen really raised the bar with this Cork
2:49:23 > 2:49:311080, three lateral twist 's off axis. There was a slight delay on
2:49:31 > 2:49:36landing before he got back into the rhythm of the track but the terms
2:49:36 > 2:49:46world worth watching. -- turns were worth watching. Lots to enjoy, will
2:49:46 > 2:49:53that be enough to give him the lead? It is 72 points and six, so the
2:49:53 > 2:49:57landing after the first jump was costly for him. James Matheson still
2:49:57 > 2:50:06leading the way. Sho Endo next up for Japan. Lots of experience, Sho
2:50:06 > 2:50:16Endo, and he is away. First ten turns leading to the opening kicker.
2:50:16 > 2:50:22Full twisting back somersault, he is a joy to watch when in full flow.
2:50:22 > 2:50:28Seventh in Vancouver, 15th in Sochi, can he push for a medal in
2:50:28 > 2:50:31Pyeongchang tonight? Second kicker. Around he goes, soft landing, good
2:50:31 > 2:50:41terms to finish, 24 point for two seconds -- 24 point two seconds,
2:50:41 > 2:50:51easily the fastest man to night. Pace time, just outside of that.
2:50:51 > 2:50:59That is 15.8 time points more than anybody else has achieved so far in
2:50:59 > 2:51:06the final. The key is a place in the top 12, and the opportunity to
2:51:06 > 2:51:13advance to the men's moguls final number two.
2:51:13 > 2:51:19number two. Nice finish, styled it out with a little iron cross. Sho
2:51:19 > 2:51:22Endo will almost certainly lead the way here. What will the judges give
2:51:22 > 2:51:32him? 82 points 72, that I should think will be good for
2:51:32 > 2:51:38qualification. Mixed fortune for the Japanese tonight. Big mistake from
2:51:38 > 2:51:43Nobuyuki Nishi but Sho Endo has taken the lead with 82 plus. Now the
2:51:43 > 2:51:50Bob Champion, Anthony Benna, in 2015 when the world Championships were
2:51:50 > 2:52:00held in Austria. Off axis and into the bumps. The French got the only
2:52:00 > 2:52:09medal so far when the -- with the women's moguls last night. Steaming
2:52:09 > 2:52:13through the course. They also have Sacha Theocharis coming later. The
2:52:13 > 2:52:18backflip with a grab, slight mistake just before the finishing line. The
2:52:18 > 2:52:22judges will see that and they might mark him down fractionally because
2:52:22 > 2:52:35he went slightly off the ski on his right.
2:52:35 > 2:52:40right. His time, 24.85. Still, Sho Endo the fastest man on the course,
2:52:40 > 2:52:5324.42. Anthony Benna, 30 years old. French fans, French coaches
2:52:53 > 2:52:59delighted last night with 19-year-old prenup from is gold
2:52:59 > 2:53:08medal. Anthony Benna will hope the results go his way, I think. Sho
2:53:08 > 2:53:18Endo leading. Next to ski, the Canadian Marc-Antoine Gagnon, first
2:53:18 > 2:53:24of the Canadians, he might go for a Cork 1080 of the second kicker. He
2:53:24 > 2:53:30is on his way.
2:53:30 > 2:53:32is on his way. Full twisting back somersault, elegant, beautifully
2:53:32 > 2:53:37landed and look at him fly now, Marc-Antoine Gagnon is tearing it up
2:53:37 > 2:53:44on this course. A huge amount of experience, 30 years of age, 30th in
2:53:44 > 2:53:51Vancouver, 23rd in Sochi, there is the 1080 off axis, that has lifted
2:53:51 > 2:53:57the noise levels at the course. They enjoyed that. Gagnon, with one of
2:53:57 > 2:54:03the toughest aerial manoeuvres of them all at high speed. Always safer
2:54:03 > 2:54:07at the bottom of the course. This was his first jump, straight out of
2:54:07 > 2:54:14the aerials, freestyle aerials, fall twisting back somersault. Lost
2:54:14 > 2:54:19control of the left pole for a split second and I wonder if the judges
2:54:19 > 2:54:24spotted that. Probably because they don't miss much. Here is the second
2:54:24 > 2:54:32jump, cork 1080. One, two, three spins laterally. Beautiful jump from
2:54:32 > 2:54:43Marc-Antoine Gagnon. Where will that put him? The score to beat... He has
2:54:43 > 2:54:53scored 78 points 38.
2:54:53 > 2:54:55scored 78 points 38. He is almost a second slower than Sho Endo, who
2:54:55 > 2:55:03leads the way. The first of the Americans, Bradley Wilson. We still
2:55:03 > 2:55:09have Troy Murphy to come later. Bradley Wilson skied beautifully
2:55:09 > 2:55:15earlier today. He has gone 1080, back seated on landing and now he
2:55:15 > 2:55:20will try to make up for it with electrifying turns. He is out of
2:55:20 > 2:55:25control, Wilkie finished? He won't make it...! Oh my goodness me, what
2:55:25 > 2:55:33a leap from Bradley Wilson! No one in the entire competition has gone
2:55:33 > 2:55:44higher or longer. He put in a backflip during that final jump.
2:55:44 > 2:55:51Incredible courage! There was the first jump. Cork 1080, slightly out
2:55:51 > 2:55:57of control but he became more and more out of control until the end he
2:55:57 > 2:56:04was just straight lining it, really, hoping for the best but he didn't
2:56:04 > 2:56:08duck out and he put in an iron cross, what a monumental leap that
2:56:08 > 2:56:16it was. That was Bradley Wilson but I don't think he will be heading to
2:56:16 > 2:56:22the next round. Almost certainly that will not be enough but what
2:56:22 > 2:56:29entertainment from him, brilliant. It was fun, he says, and it was fun
2:56:29 > 2:56:42for us as well. Casey Andringa might try the 1080 as well. From the
2:56:42 > 2:56:47United States of America, Casey Andringa is on his way, just 19
2:56:47 > 2:56:53years old, coming down the middle of the course, a bit of grab on the
2:56:53 > 2:56:58somersault. The turns are beautifully executed by Casey
2:56:58 > 2:57:02Andringa, just a slight problem with one of his ski poles for a second,
2:57:02 > 2:57:09but it is fast and accurate. There is the 1080, down he goes, and he
2:57:09 > 2:57:20crosses the line. That gives him 14 points 73 time points. Bradley
2:57:20 > 2:57:25Wilson is the quickest man on the scoreboard, but then he was straight
2:57:25 > 2:57:31lining for the second half. Casey Andringa was in full control. The
2:57:31 > 2:57:40cat that grab. -- look at that grab. Makes my hands hurt just watching
2:57:40 > 2:57:49that happen. So, the youngest man in the competition is hoping for a
2:57:49 > 2:57:57decent score now to give him a chance of progressing through to the
2:57:57 > 2:58:04next round where only 12 will compete.
2:58:04 > 2:58:08compete. He has 80.73, that has got to be good enough!
2:58:19 > 2:58:24Vinjar Slatten is next up for Norway, didn't score on Friday
2:58:24 > 2:58:29night, then had to return to make a qualifying score earlier tonight and
2:58:29 > 2:58:37skied beautifully, the 27-year-old Norwegian. He is away. First kicker,
2:58:37 > 2:58:41full twisting back somersault, nice and straight and high. Solid form in
2:58:41 > 2:58:47the air and flying through the turns. He is travelling with real
2:58:47 > 2:58:50purpose, knees are absorbing everything that comes his way, the
2:58:50 > 2:58:59second kicker, grabs the tail of his skis, off axis, finish is fast,
2:58:59 > 2:59:0824.99, giving him 15.05 time points, that is a good speed from Vinjar
2:59:08 > 2:59:16Slatten.
2:59:16 > 2:59:25Slatten. Sho Endo leads for Japan with a score of 80.72. Casey
2:59:25 > 2:59:35Andringa is second, Marc-Antoine Gagnon has
2:59:37 > 2:59:39Gagnon has scored 78.38, as Vinjar Slatten waits for the judges, they
2:59:39 > 2:59:46have scored 79.18. He will have a nervous wait to see if that finishes
2:59:46 > 2:59:52in the top 12. There will be a bit of noise because this is the first
2:59:52 > 2:59:57of the Koreans.
3:00:07 > 3:00:12Oh, you didn't get the landing as smoothly as he would have liked! The
3:00:12 > 3:00:20Terence R exquisite. -- the terms are exquisite. Just on the
3:00:20 > 3:00:26borderline between control and lack of it. That was an unusual second
3:00:26 > 3:00:35jump, cork 720 four Choi Jae Woo from Korea. Qualified to curb the
3:00:35 > 3:00:45earlier tonight with an image of fine wine. They enjoy him here. --
3:00:45 > 3:00:53qualified earlier tonight with an enjoyable ride.
3:00:53 > 3:00:57enjoyable ride. He was in control for most of his run, a couple of
3:00:57 > 3:01:06mistakes which have been highlighted in this replay. He went on with an
3:01:06 > 3:01:17old school daffy with a cork 720 and a grab. Might be enough, might be
3:01:17 > 3:01:26enough.
3:01:30 > 3:01:40Only two are definitely, fine, Sho Endo and Casey Andringa, as we get
3:01:40 > 3:01:44to the better skiers. These guys came to directly after the
3:01:44 > 3:01:51qualifying round number one on Friday.
3:01:51 > 3:01:54Friday. France's coming right down the centre line of this course.
3:01:54 > 3:02:02Probably the best chance for France tonight. Approaching the second
3:02:02 > 3:02:11ticker, landed quite heavily. That is fast.
3:02:13 > 3:02:17is fast. The quickest time of the contest so far and he gets the
3:02:17 > 3:02:25highest mark in the tide points bracket. Full twisting back
3:02:25 > 3:02:31somersault on the first kicker. And then he got to work accelerating,
3:02:31 > 3:02:39upper body nice and still. Off he went off the second kicker. Got a
3:02:39 > 3:02:45double cab driver grabbed on the tips of his skis, landed and skied
3:02:45 > 3:02:53awake. That Beth Rigby skied away. That's got to be right up there.
3:02:53 > 3:03:03That puts him in about seventh position at this stage.
3:03:03 > 3:03:15Matt Graham from Australia next to go. 23 is old.
3:03:18 > 3:03:22Seventh in Sochi, not far from the medals four years ago. Full twisting
3:03:22 > 3:03:28back somersault of the first kicker. Beautiful skiing from Matt Graham.
3:03:28 > 3:03:34Now he approaches the second kicker. Can he make discount? It is a 1080,
3:03:34 > 3:03:41beautifully executed. Down it goes, superb from him. It wasn't fast as
3:03:41 > 3:03:52well, under 25 seconds. And the Aussie fans are fully appreciative.
3:03:52 > 3:03:59One of the highest scores of the night so far. He didn't make a
3:03:59 > 3:04:04mistake at all on landing it. I was struggling to spot any areas where
3:04:04 > 3:04:12there were mistakes with the turns. Fantastic skiing from Matt Graham.
3:04:12 > 3:04:19Got to be right up there in the top five. Possibly even higher. The
3:04:19 > 3:04:23Aussies are hoping for a good score. They have got it, he goes into
3:04:23 > 3:04:30second! So, Matt Graham is through to the next round. That's
3:04:30 > 3:04:35guaranteed. We have three definite qualifiers, Sho Endo of Japan, Casey
3:04:35 > 3:04:40Andringa
3:04:40 > 3:04:46Andringa of the USA and Matt Graham. Next up, Philippe Marquis. The
3:04:46 > 3:04:55Canadian, 28-year-old. On his way. Ninth in Sochi four years ago. Full
3:04:55 > 3:05:00twisting back somersault, not a good landing, though. He's in trouble.
3:05:00 > 3:05:07And he bailed out. And that's where his Olympic Games end. Thankfully
3:05:07 > 3:05:11the snow is pretty soft at the side of the course. Although I think you
3:05:11 > 3:05:18might have just hurt himself, Philippe Marquis. He's coming down
3:05:18 > 3:05:21very gingerly and he's done some damage along the way. Let's hope
3:05:21 > 3:05:32it's nothing serious. Bump skier's unease can be fragile. -- Deniz Acar
3:05:32 > 3:05:36be fragile. And his took pounding -- their knees can be fragile and his
3:05:36 > 3:05:48took pounding there. The qualifiers are now, Sho Endo, Matt Graham,
3:05:48 > 3:05:54Vinjar Slatten, Casey Andringa, Marc-Antoine Gagnon now has
3:05:54 > 3:06:01convocation. -- qualification. The trouble started on his first jump.
3:06:01 > 3:06:08He was fighting for balance. He knew it was going to end at the side of
3:06:08 > 3:06:16the course. So it eventually opted out. He came to a half stop, and had
3:06:16 > 3:06:24to put in another turn. He's all right, I think keep fighting. He
3:06:24 > 3:06:33will not be skiing again tonight. Pavel Kolmakov is ready to go, the
3:06:33 > 3:06:35man from Kazakhstan, whose team-mate Yulia Galysheva took the bronze last
3:06:35 > 3:06:47night on this course. 21 years old. Gone for
3:06:47 > 3:06:51Gone for the 1080 corked and landed it beautifully. I love the way this
3:06:51 > 3:06:56guy skis, look at his knees, the blue band is designed to give the
3:06:56 > 3:07:03judges the best possible view of the work it does. Not many do a forward
3:07:03 > 3:07:10flip but he does.
3:07:10 > 3:07:16One of the slowest of the night so fast, not the slowest but not as
3:07:16 > 3:07:22quick as he would have liked. Only netting 13.87 time points. He will
3:07:22 > 3:07:32have to rely on aerial marks and the scores from the turning judges. They
3:07:32 > 3:07:37will surely award him positively after this display. Skis and knees
3:07:37 > 3:07:41absolutely locked together. A front flip with a double grab. Superbly
3:07:41 > 3:07:50executed.
3:07:53 > 3:08:05He's got a 78.22. And that puts him into seventh.
3:08:05 > 3:08:11into seventh. With seventh position for him, we still have six guys to
3:08:11 > 3:08:20come so nothing guaranteed for him. Next to ski from Japan, Daichi Hara.
3:08:20 > 3:08:24He is ready to go. Watching attack the bumps. What an exciting
3:08:24 > 3:08:31prospect.
3:08:31 > 3:08:35prospect. Unusual aerial, little grab, tweaked out, and the terms are
3:08:35 > 3:08:45magnificent so far from Daichi Hara. He's flying. And now he goes Hi,
3:08:45 > 3:08:49back somersault with a grab.
3:08:56 > 3:09:01So far, the quickest man on the course, his team-mate Sho Endo leads
3:09:01 > 3:09:12the way. Jump all of his design, that.
3:09:12 > 3:09:22that. A score in excess for 78.26 or varying near that would guarantee
3:09:22 > 3:09:31qualification. He's got to wait now. They've given him 81.29. Right up
3:09:31 > 3:09:36there.
3:09:36 > 3:09:45there. So, the Japanese in control here. First and third at the moment.
3:09:48 > 3:09:55Ikuma Horishima was the world champion a year ago in Sierra
3:09:55 > 3:10:03Nevada. He is an astonishing bump skier when he gets it right. Full
3:10:03 > 3:10:06twisting back somersault, and spectacular skiing again. A little
3:10:06 > 3:10:13mistake midway through. A pole plant costing him but look at the speed,
3:10:13 > 3:10:18astonishing velocity through the bumps. What a jump, finished and
3:10:18 > 3:10:25landed, 24.0 nine. Fantastic
3:10:25 > 3:10:26landed, 24.0 nine. Fantastic run from Ikuma Horishima. The Japanese
3:10:26 > 3:10:32team on fire tonight. Ikuma Horishima might well move into that
3:10:32 > 3:10:38position with this run. First jump, full twisting back somersault,
3:10:38 > 3:10:41elegant. Skis are locked together, lovely form. Barely twitched on
3:10:41 > 3:10:54landing. Flowed from mogul to Mogul. Here's his second jump. 720 spin
3:10:54 > 3:11:03with the iron Cross as well. A huge amount of distance.
3:11:03 > 3:11:15That has put him fifth. But that's good enough to
3:11:15 > 3:11:17good enough to qualify and that's all that matters. Sho Endo leads
3:11:17 > 3:11:23still.
3:11:24 > 3:11:30Four to come on this first group of 20. Next up, Troy Murphy from the
3:11:30 > 3:11:31USA.
3:11:34 > 3:11:43Troy Murphy, first kicker, two full twist in that single back
3:11:43 > 3:11:48somersault, first one we have seen tonight, beautifully executed by
3:11:48 > 3:11:51Troy Murphy who wasted no time getting into the rhythm of the
3:11:51 > 3:11:57course. The second kicker, full twisting back somersault, a little
3:11:57 > 3:12:06back-seat on landing. Lots to enjoy their from Troy Murphy.
3:12:07 > 3:12:16their from Troy Murphy. 25 years old, mercy. -- Murphy. Member of the
3:12:16 > 3:12:20Park city freestyle ski team in Utah, two lateral twist in that back
3:12:20 > 3:12:29somersault. So it was a double fault. Beautiful terms. -- beautiful
3:12:29 > 3:12:33turns. He went through the aerial route with a single twisting back
3:12:33 > 3:12:40somersault is to conclude. A big degree of difficulty on the jumps,
3:12:40 > 3:12:49landing on the second is not his best moment.
3:12:51 > 3:13:05Troy Murphy needs to get high 70, 78, 79 to be sure of qualifying.
3:13:05 > 3:13:10He's been marked down. Poor landing off the second jump. Might have cost
3:13:10 > 3:13:18him. So, it's two Japanese and two
3:13:18 > 3:13:23Australians making the top four. This is Dmitriy Reikherd now, second
3:13:23 > 3:13:30of the Kazakhstan skiers.
3:13:30 > 3:13:36of the Kazakhstan skiers. In this first final of 20.
3:13:36 > 3:13:39first final of 20. 720 corked off the first kicker. Beautiful turns,
3:13:39 > 3:13:47he is one of the finest skiers in the world. Absolutely ripping it up
3:13:47 > 3:13:55here. Sensational style, big grab on the back somersault. The time is K.
3:13:55 > 3:14:00-- OK.
3:14:02 > 3:14:05-- OK. Dmitriy Reikherd qualify directly for the first final,
3:14:05 > 3:14:08finishing third in the opening convocation run on Friday night with
3:14:08 > 3:14:16only Alexander Schmidt Schleyer and Mikael Kingsbury out -- ahead of
3:14:16 > 3:14:22him. -- Alexander Schmidt
3:14:36 > 3:14:4518th in Vancouver, fifth in Sochi, can he gets another medal for
3:14:45 > 3:14:49Kazakhstan after the bronze courtesy of Yulia Galysheva last night? He's
3:14:49 > 3:14:55into the next round.
3:14:55 > 3:14:59To make to come in the first of the three finals we will see tonight. --
3:14:59 > 3:15:06two to come. Aleksandr Smyshliaev. He is ready to go.
3:15:12 > 3:15:20From the Olympic Athletes from Russia team, under Russian colours
3:15:20 > 3:15:25he was the bronze medallist four years ago in Sochi on home soil.
3:15:25 > 3:15:31Skied beautifully on Friday night to qualify directly. The second-highest
3:15:31 > 3:15:36scorer in the first men's moguls run, and he is absolutely tearing
3:15:36 > 3:15:41down the cause, no mistakes from Smyshliaev. Oh, he's slightly
3:15:41 > 3:15:51overcooked that flight on the second kicker, rather muted celebrations
3:15:51 > 3:15:59from him as he landed, a single Russian flag-waving. Good elements.
3:15:59 > 3:16:06The first jump, full twisting back somersault. Got that right. Made no
3:16:06 > 3:16:12mistakes with the landing, but the second jump, he seemed to possibly
3:16:12 > 3:16:18change his mind about what he was going to do. As he got airborne, I
3:16:18 > 3:16:27was expecting a little more. Back seated, down on his left ski, might
3:16:27 > 3:16:36be scored down, 74.57, he is 14th, with one to come, he is out of the
3:16:36 > 3:16:44Olympics. So, now the world number-1, Mikael Kingsbury, silver
3:16:44 > 3:16:50medallist four years ago behind his team-mate, who won his second
3:16:50 > 3:16:57successive gold who has now retired. Mikael Kingsbury the most successful
3:16:57 > 3:17:05Bob skier of all time. Where he goes, 1080, lands its weekly.
3:17:05 > 3:17:10Kingsbury goes to work. This is what he does best. Absolutely eating up
3:17:10 > 3:17:16the ground. And if he lands this second jump will surely have one of
3:17:16 > 3:17:25the biggest scores of the night. Soft, smooth landing, it is fast and
3:17:25 > 3:17:29high-scoring from the world number-1. He will certainly qualify
3:17:29 > 3:17:36for the next round, he will be one of the top 12 heading into the
3:17:36 > 3:17:39final, number two. He's got to wait for the judges to make their
3:17:39 > 3:17:54assessment. Beautiful dees then -- decent
3:17:54 > 3:18:02decent bin D spin, enough to see him through to the group of 12. 720 iron
3:18:02 > 3:18:10cross off axis, magnificent skiing once again from Mikael Kingsbury.
3:18:14 > 3:18:21Silver medallist four years ago, he is here in search of gold and he is
3:18:21 > 3:18:28through to the next round in fourth position. He has a score of 81 point
3:18:28 > 3:18:3527 -- age 1.2 seven. An incredibly tense finish in the
3:18:35 > 3:18:38semifinal of the mixed doubles curling, they are having the hammer
3:18:38 > 3:18:43in this end but Switzerland to lead 6-5 for the right to meet Canada in
3:18:43 > 3:18:46the final. We rejoin them now.
3:18:50 > 3:18:55Anastasia Bryzgalova watching this stone come down, this is the climax
3:18:55 > 3:19:02of this final stone. They need two to win. Her husband and playing
3:19:02 > 3:19:09partner looks up to the sky with frustration. It hasn't paid off. He
3:19:09 > 3:19:17was trying to move those stones a little bit, wasn't able to do it,
3:19:17 > 3:19:23they moved one of the Swiss stones and this has been a tight affair all
3:19:23 > 3:19:26the way through. Switzerland deploying the power play in the
3:19:26 > 3:19:33seventh end, picking up two moving into the lead. The OAR were very
3:19:33 > 3:19:39much taking control of this but this is now anybody's match. It is and a
3:19:39 > 3:19:48great reaction from Martin Rios. Switzerland not out of the woods,
3:19:48 > 3:19:57they've got some work to do to prevent OAR from scoring the two to
3:19:57 > 3:20:03win the game.Switzerland with the yellow stones, this is the final
3:20:03 > 3:20:11stone from Martin Rios. Sweeping is owned stone, he is all action, isn't
3:20:11 > 3:20:23he, Martin Rios? The world champion, trying to hang on.That is a beauty.
3:20:23 > 3:20:32Well, they have the OAR surrounded. Of course, they have the hammer,
3:20:32 > 3:20:37they've got the last stone, they always want to give themselves the
3:20:37 > 3:20:43upper junior teacher take this to an extra end.
3:20:48 > 3:20:52Anastasia Bryzgalova playing the fifth stone. Last one will be played
3:20:52 > 3:21:00by her husband. Just make sure you get one now? Set yourself up for
3:21:00 > 3:21:07that?Absolutely not. There is still definitely a chance to score a
3:21:07 > 3:21:10couple. They can hit this on the inside and maybe even remove all
3:21:10 > 3:21:16three of these yellows. Anastasia Bryzgalova giving it the old heave
3:21:16 > 3:21:24Ho and see how much she can get moving.
3:21:24 > 3:21:34moving. Fit it too thin. -- hit it. So tight that guard. It is thin and
3:21:34 > 3:21:38therefore two have gone but one still sitting there. So now it is
3:21:38 > 3:21:45over to Jenny Perret. They are sighing. Look at the look there.
3:21:45 > 3:21:57Turns away. Married couple. Could be words later.
3:21:57 > 3:22:01Don't forget, OAR will have the last stone here. It is 6-5 to
3:22:01 > 3:22:09Switzerland. This semifinal winner goes through to meet Canada in the
3:22:09 > 3:22:18gold-medal match. Losers will play Norway in the bronze medal match.
3:22:18 > 3:22:22Jenny Perret with what could be her last stone. She hopes it will be.
3:22:22 > 3:22:28She will not want to come back in the extra end. One more stone for
3:22:28 > 3:22:38OAR. Is she going to try to lie on top of the OAR stone or is she
3:22:38 > 3:22:43blocking the guard in?She's putting the guard up and I'm not sure that
3:22:43 > 3:22:49is a bit negative. What it does do it leaves the opposition a shot to
3:22:49 > 3:22:54win the game. If you drop onto the other side and get it perfect, you
3:22:54 > 3:23:02can score one. Where is now, even if OAR can't come around and tapped the
3:23:02 > 3:23:11yellow stone, they can drive the guard back - two. -- and score two.
3:23:11 > 3:23:17They've been so good all week at picking their shots, deciding what
3:23:17 > 3:23:21to play, and I guess what they are saying is go on, make it.They
3:23:21 > 3:23:30certainly are.Easier said than done.
3:23:30 > 3:23:31done. So, OAR, Alexander Krushelnitskiy and his wife,
3:23:31 > 3:23:40Anastasia Bryzgalova, watching on. He has the chance to win this. That
3:23:40 > 3:23:46Swiss stone needs to be moved. It goes quiet. The two of them watching
3:23:46 > 3:23:55the line. No, they are going for the one, not for the win.I think they
3:23:55 > 3:24:01were, they just have not played it very well.Still going, it is still
3:24:01 > 3:24:09going. And it is Switzerland who win. A huge error from Alexander
3:24:09 > 3:24:12Krushelnitskiy. Well, they asked them to play the shot and he
3:24:12 > 3:24:17couldn't. That is what pressure curling is all about. It is the
3:24:17 > 3:24:21world champions Switzerland going into the gold-medal match against
3:24:21 > 3:24:33Canada. It has been a match that has been to and fro. The married pair
3:24:33 > 3:24:36from OAR are now into the bronze medal match. It is a win for
3:24:36 > 3:24:45Switzerland. That was so exciting, so tense! We
3:24:45 > 3:24:50will head straight back to the moguls. Men's moguls second final,
3:24:50 > 3:24:5512 starters here, the top six will go through to the ultimate final at
3:24:55 > 3:24:59which the medals will be decided. You've seen already how much
3:24:59 > 3:25:02pressure it puts on their knees and if they start to lose control they
3:25:02 > 3:25:08can go of course. Matt Chilton is in our Mogul commentary box.
3:25:08 > 3:25:13COMMENTATOR:
3:25:53 > 3:26:00So, two have gone. The first guy, Sacha Theocharis, failed to finish.
3:26:00 > 3:26:08The city first man who has made it to the foot of the course, the,
3:26:08 > 3:26:19Kolmakov, who has skied solidly tonight. Choi Jae Woo from Korea, he
3:26:19 > 3:26:23prepares to ski for what he hopes will not be the last time. He has to
3:26:23 > 3:26:29put one down. Will he go for the 1080? Here we go, 1080 off axis with
3:26:29 > 3:26:38a good landing. Ripping it up. The crowd are thinking this is going to
3:26:38 > 3:26:46be good enough for the lead but there is work to be done. Oh, no!
3:26:46 > 3:26:52Landed on his face!
3:26:52 > 3:26:57Landed on his face! Well, take your hat off to the young man for having
3:26:57 > 3:27:03a real go, 23 years of age, he decided in his home Olympics he
3:27:03 > 3:27:08really had to throw it down and he went for a massive 720 with a couple
3:27:08 > 3:27:18of grabs but the rotations were too demanding. His spatial awareness
3:27:18 > 3:27:22mid-flight was all over the place and I think he may well be seeing
3:27:22 > 3:27:29stars at the moment. He is minus one piece of hardware and let's hope he
3:27:29 > 3:27:38hasn't hurt himself. It was a huge shunt for Choi Jae Woo. Just
3:27:38 > 3:27:47gathering his thoughts behind the inflatable finish line. He has made
3:27:47 > 3:27:54his way to the finish area but it is all over for Choi Jae Woo. He
3:27:54 > 3:28:02started so well. The 1080 D spin was executed exquisitely at the top and
3:28:02 > 3:28:04the turns mid-course were magnificent for most of the way
3:28:04 > 3:28:08down. I don't know what happened, whether there was a sudden rush of
3:28:08 > 3:28:13blood to the head or whether he thought he had to do something extra
3:28:13 > 3:28:18spectacular to be sure of making the final six but this won't horribly
3:28:18 > 3:28:25wrong. Once round, twice around, down heavily, bounced back up and he
3:28:25 > 3:28:32took a little while to recover after that heavy fall. Of the three that
3:28:32 > 3:28:36have skied so far, only one has finished, and it is Pavel Kolmakov
3:28:36 > 3:28:47leading the way with a tally of 76.10. It is all over for Choi Jae
3:28:47 > 3:28:57Woo. Goodness me, he kept the crowd entertained. That is the end of the
3:28:57 > 3:29:02Korean involvement in tonight's final. Next up, the first of two
3:29:02 > 3:29:14Canadians, Marc-Antoine Gagnon. 26 years old, he is away.
3:29:14 > 3:29:20Full twisting back somersault, lovely landing! Didn't flinch before
3:29:20 > 3:29:25he got stuck into the moguls and he is skiing them quite beautifully, no
3:29:25 > 3:29:30mistakes at all, this is the best of this final so far from Marc-Antoine
3:29:30 > 3:29:41Gagnon. Can he hold it together? Big cork 1080, wonderful run, 25.53 four
3:29:41 > 3:29:43Marc-Antoine Gagnon, who just missed a medal four years ago. He was
3:29:43 > 3:29:51fourth in Sochi. That is the best we have seen from Marc-Antoine Gagnon
3:29:51 > 3:29:57so far.
3:29:57 > 3:30:02The timing on the landing at the top was absolutely perfect. One little
3:30:02 > 3:30:08mistake which they have highlighted in the replay. But apart from that,
3:30:08 > 3:30:15it was excellent. Here is the dig-mac 1080 D spin, pulling the
3:30:15 > 3:30:19skis around in plenty of time to make the landing. Will that be
3:30:19 > 3:30:27enough to take first position? It is! Only just, 77.4 compared to
3:30:27 > 3:30:3376.1.
3:30:42 > 3:30:53Vinjar Slatten. Next To Go For Norway.
3:30:54 > 3:30:59He is the only Norwegian in the final, full twisting back
3:30:59 > 3:31:03somersault, slightly lost control on the landing. Now he's back in the
3:31:03 > 3:31:09groove and these terms are good. Is the place too much, will it catch up
3:31:09 > 3:31:12with him before he reaches the final kicker? He's never looked
3:31:12 > 3:31:15particularly comfortable. The landing was good enough, the speed
3:31:15 > 3:31:28will be fine. That's the fastest time of this second finals so far.
3:31:28 > 3:31:32I'm not convinced he was ever completely comfortable. Here's his
3:31:32 > 3:31:38first jump, testing back, salt. The make -- twisting back somersault.
3:31:38 > 3:31:41The major probably had is just after the landing, his skis got away with
3:31:41 > 3:31:53him. As a result he was absolutely flying. Second jump. Not the neatest
3:31:53 > 3:32:02aerial manoeuvre he's ever performed. But the landing was good.
3:32:02 > 3:32:07And he scored the highest number of time point is in this second final
3:32:07 > 3:32:19so far with 15.94. Marc-Antoine Gagnon is currently the leader.
3:32:19 > 3:32:24They're making him wait for awhile. Obviously a difference of opinion
3:32:24 > 3:32:31within the judges Tower. Its first! 78.87.
3:32:35 > 3:32:39So, only six will go forward from this round. And with seven guys are
3:32:39 > 3:32:46still to come, nothing guaranteed yet. Now the world champion, Ikuma
3:32:46 > 3:32:53Horishima. Wasn't at his best in the previous round. Will he starts to
3:32:53 > 3:32:56turn it on here? You can bet your bottom dollar it will be fast and
3:32:56 > 3:33:02entertaining. That was a little ragged and now he's out of control
3:33:02 > 3:33:13and he's not going to get a medal here tonight. If, Ikuma Horishima,
3:33:13 > 3:33:18he gave it everything. Maximum speed at the top of the course but his
3:33:18 > 3:33:24speed let him down.
3:33:24 > 3:33:25speed let him down. Well, plenty more chances to come tonight for
3:33:25 > 3:33:35Japan. Still got Daichi Hara to ski, and Sho Endo will be the last man on
3:33:35 > 3:33:40the Hill.
3:33:41 > 3:33:43the Hill. He finishes with a flourish but the world champion will
3:33:43 > 3:33:46not become the Olympics champion.
3:33:49 > 3:33:58Six to go. With just six places up for grabs in the super final where
3:33:58 > 3:34:01the medals will be decided. This is where it started to unravel, he
3:34:01 > 3:34:05never got to grips with that first jump. He might have changed is mind
3:34:05 > 3:34:09as to what he would do and he already fails to qualify by this
3:34:09 > 3:34:13stage there he knew that the sensible thing was to try and stop
3:34:13 > 3:34:17as gracefully as possible. But it's not easy. He lost his pole, his
3:34:17 > 3:34:24glove. Rather losses dignity as well.
3:34:25 > 3:34:29well. So, Vinjar Slatten leads, hasn't been a particularly high
3:34:29 > 3:34:38scoring round so far. Marc-Antoine Gagnon is second. Pavel Kolmakov
3:34:38 > 3:34:46holds third. We may well expect some higher scores as the final six make
3:34:46 > 3:34:54a run. Another Kazakhstan were to be true right card. -- another
3:34:54 > 3:35:01Kazakhstan athlete, Dmitri
3:35:01 > 3:35:03Kazakhstan athlete, Dmitri Dmitriy Reikherd. Can he be the first man to
3:35:03 > 3:35:11score over 80? A big de spin 1080, landing sweet. Write down with those
3:35:11 > 3:35:15yellow bands on his knees showing exactly what he's doing to the
3:35:15 > 3:35:20judges. A lack of control for a split-second but he's has recovered,
3:35:20 > 3:35:30huge! Me, poor finish. -- goodness me, poor finish. That will not be
3:35:30 > 3:35:35enough to get him through but he threw everything at it. Go big or go
3:35:35 > 3:35:40home, they say but sadly, he'll be going home. Dimitri Reich started
3:35:40 > 3:35:51really solidly with a big core ten D-spin. A little mistake but he
3:35:51 > 3:35:56never really got back on top of his skis. I now think Vinjar Slatten,
3:35:56 > 3:35:59who leads the way, will become double that he will be making his
3:35:59 > 3:36:07way to the final six. There was too much wrong with this for Dmitriy
3:36:07 > 3:36:15Reikherd to be scored highly enough.
3:36:17 > 3:36:22It puts him down in fourth position. I guess it's still mathematically
3:36:22 > 3:36:30possible that he will see the next five guys fall over. Next ago is
3:36:30 > 3:36:39Casey Andringa. The American 22-year-old. Getting ready to race.
3:36:39 > 3:36:45On his way.
3:36:47 > 3:36:50On his way. First jump landed beautifully, right down the middle
3:36:50 > 3:36:55of the course, one of the tallest man in the competition. His back is
3:36:55 > 3:37:00so still, his arms doing all the work. The skis calving beautifully
3:37:00 > 3:37:09underneath him. This could be quick. Big
3:37:10 > 3:37:13Big D-spin 1080, magnificent mogul skiing from Casey Andringa of the
3:37:13 > 3:37:18United States of America.
3:37:24 > 3:37:29At the moment, we just have one qualifier. Vinjar Slatten leads the
3:37:29 > 3:37:41way, the only man qualifying guaranteed.
3:37:43 > 3:37:45I have a feeling that Casey Andringa might be joining him. One little
3:37:45 > 3:37:52movement from the parallel. Here is his big 1080 jump to conclude.
3:37:56 > 3:38:08Three lateral twists, in credible special awareness. He leads the way.
3:38:08 > 3:38:12The first man to break the 80 mark in the second final and he will
3:38:12 > 3:38:19qualify for the super six. On paper, he's got a 50% chance of getting a
3:38:19 > 3:38:27medal. Six will ski for free medal. -- three medals. Now Michael
3:38:27 > 3:38:34Kingsley, not at his best in the previous round.
3:38:34 > 3:38:39previous round. Kingsbury of Canada. Silver medallist in Sochi four years
3:38:39 > 3:38:44ago. On his way.
3:38:45 > 3:38:48ago. On his way. A big 1080 D-spin, Kingsbury lands solidly and settles
3:38:48 > 3:38:55in. The turns art sheer perfection so far and he has not put a foot
3:38:55 > 3:39:00wrong. Controlling the speed, managing the moguls perfectly. Final
3:39:00 > 3:39:09jump lands sweetly. An exhibition run from Mikael Kingsbury. That's
3:39:09 > 3:39:15got to be early 80s. That's got to be the new lead. May not have been
3:39:15 > 3:39:20at his best in the previous round, but he really moved it up through
3:39:20 > 3:39:28the ears here. -- through the gears. Big 1080 D-spin, look how straight
3:39:28 > 3:39:32his body was. The execution of that is the best we've seen at the
3:39:32 > 3:39:40Olympic bands competition so far. Turns in the mid-part of the course,
3:39:40 > 3:39:43maybe one mistake where his timing was slightly out. And his final
3:39:43 > 3:39:54jump. The landing was a sensational. He skied away with four or five more
3:39:54 > 3:40:05turns. It'll be over 80. It will be the lead, I'm sure. It is .19, with
3:40:05 > 3:40:12three to come.
3:40:15 > 3:40:24By eg Harrah is next to go. -- date she Harrah.
3:40:24 > 3:40:31We have his compatriots to come as well, but Daichi Hara is next on
3:40:31 > 3:40:37course.
3:40:37 > 3:40:43course. Got to grab there, nice stylish jump. Look at his knees go,
3:40:43 > 3:40:47looks like he might lose control at any moment but somehow he finds a
3:40:47 > 3:40:50way to keep them calm. He is blitzing down the tracks, surely
3:40:50 > 3:40:54this will be one of the quickest times of the night so far. He went
3:40:54 > 3:41:02high and long, he's got 24.41.
3:41:02 > 3:41:05high and long, he's got 24.41. It's the second fastest run of this
3:41:05 > 3:41:10round.
3:41:11 > 3:41:15round. 15.81 time points. Look at the spread there. Old School, mix a
3:41:15 > 3:41:23new school.
3:41:27 > 3:41:31Daichi Hara really three this one down.
3:41:44 > 3:41:52So, Hara landed that hard enough and he has gone first. He's in first of
3:41:52 > 3:41:56Mikael Kingsbury, he leads the way, qualified for the super final.
3:41:56 > 3:42:03STUDIO: they're getting better and better, two more men will be coming
3:42:03 > 3:42:07down the course and we will catch them on BBC Two, we are about to
3:42:07 > 3:42:12leave BBC One, the one o'clock news coming your way. When we switch to
3:42:12 > 3:42:16BBC Two, we will conclude that second men's final then the super
3:42:16 > 3:42:23final, and we will also catch up on the men's biathlon. The women's ski
3:42:23 > 3:42:26jumping, only the second time that has been in the Winter Olympics and
3:42:26 > 3:42:31also we will have a review of everything so far at 3pm. So if you
3:42:31 > 3:42:38missed anything, you will be able to catch up.What happened? We are
3:42:38 > 3:42:44postponed again in the grand slalom, high hopes that he will get the
3:42:44 > 3:42:47combined race but they are thinking the gondola might not even be able
3:42:47 > 3:42:52to run.The winds are going up to 45 miles an hour, as soon as it becomes
3:42:52 > 3:42:55dangerous to get up to the top to the mountain, of course you cannot
3:42:55 > 3:43:00start.And with a tail winds it unfair, it's got to be an equal
3:43:00 > 3:43:04playing field for everyone. And as we saw in the flip style, when the
3:43:04 > 3:43:11wind is bad, don't they can't pull off their best tricks. Jamie
3:43:11 > 3:43:24Anderson from the US. Lizzy Yarnold has posted a very fast training run,
3:43:24 > 3:43:30and Dominic Parsons as well, that bodes well for the skeleton, starts
3:43:30 > 3:43:35on Friday. Loads more to come from the Winter Olympics but go to BBC
3:43:35 > 3:43:42Two and we will be picking up those men's moguls final.
