0:00:36 > 0:00:41Hello and welcome to Day 4 of the Winter Olympics.

0:00:41 > 0:00:49Today, Elise Christie takes to the ice -

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Britain's only hope of multiple medals and first chance to win

0:00:51 > 0:00:53a gold at these Pyeongchang Games.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56She will fly around at speeds of 30 miles an hour on blades

0:00:56 > 0:00:57just a millimetre wide.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Short track is notoriously rough and Christie was on the wrong side

0:01:00 > 0:01:03of the judges in all three of her races four years ago.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06As we know, sport can be defined by the finest of margins both

0:01:06 > 0:01:07in millimetres and milliseconds.

0:01:07 > 0:01:13This morning, millions of us will be cheering her on.

0:01:23 > 0:01:28In Korea we are very superstitious. We hate the number four. Try to stay

0:01:28 > 0:01:39away from that.They've all gone down!

0:01:39 > 0:01:44I had quite a lot of abuse over the Internet that I had to deal with.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48It's been very tough. I'm finding it quite hard.

0:01:51 > 0:02:01Toward off bat luck, we make kites. On them, we write down our name and

0:02:01 > 0:02:12birthday. -- two ward off bad luck. And just like that, the bad luck is

0:02:12 > 0:02:20gone.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26South Korea is the hotbed and heart of short track speed skating. They

0:02:26 > 0:02:28love it.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30That is the Gangneung Ice Arena where our focus

0:02:30 > 0:02:31will be this morning.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34In her heat on Saturday, Christie set a new Olympic record

0:02:34 > 0:02:35as she won comfortably.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37That time was eclipsed by South Korea's Choi Minjeong,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40who's a six time world champion.

0:02:40 > 0:02:48Christie is in the second quarterfinal.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08Sarah Lindsay was part of the British Short track team for nearly

0:03:08 > 0:03:1220 years. Chemmy Alcott has been to four Olympic Games. They both know

0:03:12 > 0:03:16what it's like to deal with this situation. Sarah, let's talk about

0:03:16 > 0:03:21the intensity of short track. The fact you are there with other

0:03:21 > 0:03:25competitors, having to be physical. Yeah, four people on the track

0:03:25 > 0:03:33altogether. I think for Elise, she gets out in front and then people

0:03:33 > 0:03:36will be fighting behind her. She gets a clear run and she can just

0:03:36 > 0:03:41cruise through the first couple of rounds. When it comes to your

0:03:41 > 0:03:46moment, Chemmy, she admitted how nervous she was before the

0:03:46 > 0:03:50qualifying heat, how do you control yourself during the day to produce

0:03:50 > 0:03:56your best performance?Elise has such a big personality. It's about

0:03:56 > 0:04:00distraction. She doesn't look like she's staying in the zone for long.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04You get so fatigued just thinking about your event. She's had a few

0:04:04 > 0:04:13days since qualifying to look at everybody's else form. Instead of

0:04:13 > 0:04:17being Elise Christie with the hopes of a nation on her, she has to be a

0:04:17 > 0:04:22girl enjoying the moment. You know her well, tell us more about Elise

0:04:22 > 0:04:26Christie. How would you define her and what is she like? She is a huge

0:04:26 > 0:04:31character. We have seen a little bit of that. I hope we see more. She can

0:04:31 > 0:04:37be a little bit kooky and crazy. You almost have to be in all winter

0:04:37 > 0:04:42sports. But she knows how to switch on. She's a real professional and

0:04:42 > 0:04:49works so, so hard. And every single day is so important to her.She has

0:04:49 > 0:04:54worked an awful lot on her fitness. Where are your key muscles for short

0:04:54 > 0:04:59track, what do we need to work on? Obviously you use your whole body.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03There isn't a lot of upper body involved, apart from your core. It's

0:05:03 > 0:05:13mostly all legs and your glutes. And she has worked a lot on that big

0:05:13 > 0:05:17muscle appear, the mind. Who has helped her, and how she used her

0:05:17 > 0:05:24resilience as the strongest quality? She has a very good support network.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28There's a support staff in all areas. She's well looked after now,

0:05:28 > 0:05:35and everything she needs is taken care of. She has worked really hard

0:05:35 > 0:05:42on that side. She is naturally quite emotional. It's nice for us. If she

0:05:42 > 0:05:46loses, she will lie on the floor and cry. But if she wins then she will

0:05:46 > 0:05:50really celebrate so you will feel that emotion. There doesn't seem to

0:05:50 > 0:05:53be any guard. But when she takes to the ice, she is so

0:05:53 > 0:05:55be any guard. But when she takes to the ice, she is so effective. We can

0:05:55 > 0:06:03look at her feet on Saturday. At the time this was an Olympic record. Her

0:06:03 > 0:06:07start has not been her strongest point historically, but she has

0:06:07 > 0:06:11worked really hard on it. She worked to get out in front ahead of the

0:06:11 > 0:06:16pack, and they then have to work to catch up before they can even think

0:06:16 > 0:06:21about overtaking. They can catch up and stay in her slipstream, but they

0:06:21 > 0:06:26don't have the speed to overtake. Her lines into and around the bend?

0:06:26 > 0:06:33She goes into and quite wide to build up speed as fast as possible.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37She knows nobody can overtake her in the first two or three laps so she

0:06:37 > 0:06:42is clear to take any line she wants. In the last couple of laps she was

0:06:42 > 0:06:45shot down the track and skate tighter so people can't consider

0:06:45 > 0:06:51overtaking. There is no space to try.The world record-holder over

0:06:51 > 0:06:57500 metres. In your opinion, is any medal on OK result, or do you think

0:06:57 > 0:07:05it's gold or nothing?I think any medal is a result for Team GB and

0:07:05 > 0:07:08the result for our sport, because it's been quite a long time since we

0:07:08 > 0:07:12achieved that. But for Tempo Mac, I think only gold will do for her. --

0:07:12 > 0:07:21but for Elise.Even in the 500?I don't think it's her best event. In

0:07:21 > 0:07:24the 1000 and 1500 I am more confident in because there is no

0:07:24 > 0:07:29room for mistake in the 500 metres. Just one little slip, if she tries

0:07:29 > 0:07:33to make a move and kills her speed, anything like that could interrupt

0:07:33 > 0:07:38her race and there is no time to recover. That's the only difference

0:07:38 > 0:07:41with the 500, it's exciting and fast, but there is no room for

0:07:41 > 0:07:41with the 500, it's exciting and fast, but there is no room for

0:07:41 > 0:07:48error.Having qualified as fast as she did, what does that mean for the

0:07:48 > 0:07:51quarterfinals? Does she need to win that quarterfinal to get a good lane

0:07:51 > 0:07:57in the semifinals? It's the time, she got second-fastest time to give

0:07:57 > 0:08:02her lane one, which is a huge advantage, she can just time trial

0:08:02 > 0:08:05the first round, hopefully. She can get to the front and skate how she

0:08:05 > 0:08:10wants in the race. She doesn't have to deal with anyone else's tactics

0:08:10 > 0:08:15or variables and she can float through that. The faster time gets

0:08:15 > 0:08:17you a better lane draw for the next round and it makes qualifying

0:08:17 > 0:08:22easier.She has tried to make it clear, and I don't know if it's a

0:08:22 > 0:08:27psychological trick, or if it's true in her head, winning three medals at

0:08:27 > 0:08:31the World Championships was her redemption, that's the top of the

0:08:31 > 0:08:34individual sport, but she wants to do it at the Olympics for everybody

0:08:34 > 0:08:39else.That's true. She is completely her own person and is very

0:08:39 > 0:08:45headstrong. She believes the World Championships is harder on paper to

0:08:45 > 0:08:49achieve what she has done there. There are fewer people in the

0:08:49 > 0:08:55Olympics. The top 30 or so have already been selected and they are

0:08:55 > 0:08:59racing at the Olympics, so there are less rounds to do. On paper it

0:08:59 > 0:09:02should be easier but the Olympic Games is the Olympic Games and it's

0:09:02 > 0:09:12huge. There are lots of things to deal with that not

0:09:12 > 0:09:15deal with that not your normal preparation. There is more light and

0:09:15 > 0:09:21attention on the ice rink at the Olympics. If it is really bright in

0:09:21 > 0:09:25there and you don't judge the corner at the exact same way you normally

0:09:25 > 0:09:29would, you take this much difference in how you go into the corner and

0:09:29 > 0:09:33the line you take down the straight, and it can impact the next corner.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Little things like that, but at least we don't have to deal with the

0:09:36 > 0:09:46weather!Wilf O'Reilly will Beer the commentary box, the first British

0:09:46 > 0:09:53man to bring short track skating to the fore.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55into this country's sporting history, by winning only

0:09:55 > 0:09:57the 11th gold in British Winter Olympics history.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00And we are all getting excited. In our commentary box

0:10:00 > 0:10:02will be Wilf O'Reilly, the first British short track speed

0:10:02 > 0:10:03skater to make an impact.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06He won two gold medals when short track was a demonstration sport

0:10:06 > 0:10:07at the 1988 Olympics.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09He's been talking to David McDaid.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11What did you take away from her performance the other night? What

0:10:11 > 0:10:16was nice to see was how relaxed she was. I was watching her and watching

0:10:16 > 0:10:20her boyfriend in the final of the 1500 metres after she skated the

0:10:20 > 0:10:24Olympic record, and she was so relaxed. One thing she has to

0:10:24 > 0:10:28realise, she has three races, the quarterfinals, she has drawn lane

0:10:28 > 0:10:32number one. After that, go to the dressing room and relax. I'm hoping

0:10:32 > 0:10:40for the semifinal, and many of us are predicting, many commentators,

0:10:40 > 0:10:44former top sport short track speed skaters, including Apollo, and we

0:10:44 > 0:10:49all think Elise Christie will win gold. Not just the BBC expert but

0:10:49 > 0:10:58many short track experts are predicting Elise Christie.Choi

0:10:58 > 0:11:04Minjeong of Korea skated an Olympic record after Elise. She is in the

0:11:04 > 0:11:11last heat, so the second quarterfinal. That means Elise will

0:11:11 > 0:11:14have about ten minutes longer recovery time, assuming she gets

0:11:14 > 0:11:17through to the semifinal, which I think she will. All these aspects

0:11:17 > 0:11:22will help. The fact she is so relaxed. Nicky is looking relaxed as

0:11:22 > 0:11:27well. The whole GB camp is looking very good.We hope she will stay

0:11:27 > 0:11:31relaxed. We hope you and the other experts are right and Elise Christie

0:11:31 > 0:11:38will be standing on the podium, if not on top, then at least somewhere.

0:11:38 > 0:11:43Wilf O'Reilly is feeling good about this.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48Wilf O'Reilly is feeling good about this. 12 World Championship medals,

0:11:48 > 0:11:53ten European titles, 17 European Championship medals. The World Cup

0:11:53 > 0:11:57title holder and the 500 metre world record-holder. All the stats behind

0:11:57 > 0:12:03Elise Christie.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05So Elise and short track speed skating is our main

0:12:05 > 0:12:06focus this morning.

0:12:06 > 0:12:13Here's what else is coming up here on BBC One until 1:00pm.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16Austria's Marcel Hirscher is proclaimed as one

0:12:16 > 0:12:20of the greatest skiers of all time, but he has yet to secure

0:12:20 > 0:12:21an Olympic gold medal.

0:12:21 > 0:12:22The combined offers him a first chance.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Germany's Natalie Geisenberger defends her title in the women's

0:12:24 > 0:12:27luge and she's in pole position with two runs to come.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Her great friend Felix Loch threw away that position -

0:12:30 > 0:12:32it's a slippery old sport.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36We've got more cross-country action with the men's and women's sprint,

0:12:36 > 0:12:38featuring Britain's Andrew Young in his third Olympics

0:12:38 > 0:12:40and his favourite event.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44And over on the red button, it's the gold medal match

0:12:44 > 0:12:51in the mixed doubles between Canada and Switzerland.

0:12:55 > 0:13:01Coming up next, the best of the men's combined competition before

0:13:01 > 0:13:05building up to Elise Christie.

0:13:13 > 0:13:20Let's take a look at some of the headlines on day four...

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Snowboarder Chloe Kim, an American teenager

0:13:22 > 0:13:26with South Korean parents, lit up the Phoenix Snow Park

0:13:26 > 0:13:29with a brilliant display to claim gold in the women's half pipe.

0:13:29 > 0:13:34The first-ever medal in mixed doubles curling has gone

0:13:34 > 0:13:36to the Olympic Athletes from Russia - they won the bronze

0:13:36 > 0:13:44play-off against Norway.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49Japanese short track skater Kei Saito has become the first

0:13:49 > 0:13:53athlete to be expelled from these Olympics for a doping violation.

0:13:53 > 0:14:00He tested positive for a banned masking agent prior to the Games.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06It was interesting, Sarah, just ask you one more thing about Elise

0:14:06 > 0:14:10Christie and her mental state this morning. She said after

0:14:10 > 0:14:15qualification heats, she had almost never felt nerves like it. How will

0:14:15 > 0:14:19she control things this morning? They will go back to a much more

0:14:19 > 0:14:24familiar format now, so her feet was one race on its own on the day and

0:14:24 > 0:14:28you have a huge build-up over weeks and weeks to perform in that first

0:14:28 > 0:14:32race. Now they are going back into heats, semis and finals within a

0:14:32 > 0:14:37couple of hours, so you don't have a lot of time to overthink things and

0:14:37 > 0:14:41psych yourself out. She can go into her normal routine that she has

0:14:41 > 0:14:46practised a million times before. It's better for her today.Before we

0:14:46 > 0:14:50head off for the Alpine events, they have all been cancelled and

0:14:50 > 0:14:53postponed. We finally get some action. And great news from the

0:14:53 > 0:14:57skeleton training runs.

0:14:57 > 0:15:03Everyone says it is just training, but they have so much confidence and

0:15:03 > 0:15:09we are seeing all the equipment and technology is working. On that track

0:15:09 > 0:15:13they're a force to be reckoned with. They have new suits. They have just

0:15:13 > 0:15:19revealed. Whistling like the Austrian skiers. The times look

0:15:19 > 0:15:30good. Laura Deas is posting fast time. Laura Deas was the... You know

0:15:30 > 0:15:37sliding under the radar. But very like what Amy Williams did in

0:15:37 > 0:15:41Vancouver and came through and won the gold. Lizzie Yarnold was only

0:15:41 > 0:15:48sixth in run three. On the the four training run she moves up. Right up.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53She is getting more familiar with that track. She is looking stronger.

0:15:53 > 0:15:59And Laura, not such a quick run, but still very encouraging. The men, Dom

0:15:59 > 0:16:03Parsons has said well, listen, all of it is about the women. So I have

0:16:03 > 0:16:07no pressure. But he has been consistently the fastest and he was

0:16:07 > 0:16:15on run 3 and run 4 he just was a little bit further down. But fifth

0:16:15 > 0:16:21fastest. Only seven hundredths behind the New Zealand leader. So

0:16:21 > 0:16:27encouraging stuff from the training runs in skeleton and those times are

0:16:27 > 0:16:31significant. All the pros look at the training times, because you

0:16:31 > 0:16:36can't hold back in skeleton.They're so confident and they're exploring

0:16:36 > 0:16:45new lines. Laura didn't look fast, because she was trying a new

0:16:45 > 0:16:51entrance. It takes guts to try something new. Dom is right in

0:16:51 > 0:16:57there. It is so exciting. It is. That kind of confidence spreads

0:16:57 > 0:17:03through the team. That is great. From Andrew Musgrave's record finish

0:17:03 > 0:17:10in a cross country race to what Ellise might do and the skeleton

0:17:10 > 0:17:16athletes and the four-man bob. Just in a sentence, could you explain

0:17:16 > 0:17:22what the men's combined competition is?It is the original alpine

0:17:22 > 0:17:28competition, show casing the different skills, the down hill and

0:17:28 > 0:17:34the technical agility of slalom. The favourite has never won a gold in

0:17:34 > 0:17:37the Olympics, although he is regarded as one of the greatest of

0:17:37 > 0:17:51all time. To take us through the men's combined, Matt and Graham.

0:17:52 > 0:17:57The first alpine ski racer at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. With all

0:17:57 > 0:18:03the delays with the wind we have had to wait until this Tuesday for the

0:18:03 > 0:18:07men's alpine combined to get under way. It is a shortened course,

0:18:07 > 0:18:12because of the wind. Graham Bell will take you through it.We are

0:18:12 > 0:18:17starting on top of the roller costar section. There are tunnels under the

0:18:17 > 0:18:24course coming up on what would be the second jump

0:18:26 > 0:18:34the second jump in the down hill. That is paradise turn and heading

0:18:34 > 0:18:40towards the blue Dragon Valley.

0:18:43 > 0:18:55towards the blue Dragon Valley. This combined race is a match of two.

0:18:59 > 0:19:14There is still a bit of wind about. Coming to the final jump now.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18Coming to the final jump now.He has a couple of reasonable results on

0:19:18 > 0:19:24the World Cup this season. But there will be plenty of interest now. As

0:19:24 > 0:19:29he prepares to race.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35he prepares to race. Hirscher in action for the first time since the

0:19:35 > 0:19:43last winter Olympics when he claimed a silver in the slalom. In the World

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Championships in 2015 he got gold. The next year he claimed silver in

0:19:47 > 0:19:53the alpine combined event.

0:19:59 > 0:20:06In training his runs... That was a big jump there. Luckily he was

0:20:06 > 0:20:13balanced as he took the air. This is a good run from Hirscher. Can he can

0:20:13 > 0:20:17afford to give away time as long as he stays in the top 30. That is the

0:20:17 > 0:20:23most important thing he has to do today. Put down a damage limitation

0:20:23 > 0:20:34run.That is good.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38He will be pleased. That was a jump that took him by surprise however.

0:20:38 > 0:20:43He flew!

0:20:54 > 0:21:03What happened to him? He must have had an incident. Not often you see a

0:21:03 > 0:21:07guy straddling a gate. The binding exploded there. Goodness me.That

0:21:07 > 0:21:15ski off as well.Thankfully both skis are off. He got tangled in the

0:21:15 > 0:21:22safety netting. It is so grippy this snow, his ski overloaded and pinched

0:21:22 > 0:21:28him in on the gate. Now to some down hillers. These guys will be

0:21:28 > 0:21:32interesting. They will have an impact into what is happening with

0:21:32 > 0:21:37the slalom.

0:21:42 > 0:21:48Svindal won't be turning up for the other competition. The down hill day

0:21:48 > 0:21:56has been moved to Thursday.Oh, he is late in the line going into the

0:21:56 > 0:22:01blue Dragon Valley. His knee is no good enough to race slalom. You get

0:22:01 > 0:22:05that short, sharp pressure in on the gate. Down hill, you can build the

0:22:05 > 0:22:12pressure and get away with being strong and slow and powerful. Look

0:22:12 > 0:22:17how much looser and more relaxed he is than the slalom skiers we have

0:22:17 > 0:22:26seen.35 years young now, Svindal. Here with one thing in mind - to win

0:22:26 > 0:22:29the Olympic down hill on Thursday. He is in second position at the

0:22:29 > 0:22:34moment. That is just another training run. Here is the Olympic

0:22:34 > 0:22:42down hill champion. Meier claimed the gold in Sochi four years ago and

0:22:42 > 0:22:51became as a result a national hero in Austria. As all previous Austrian

0:22:51 > 0:22:59Olympic down hill champions do.I think there is seven in total. He

0:22:59 > 0:23:09will defend that title on Thursday. Mayer tackles the alpine combined.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14Away he goes.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19Away he goes. Dressen's split 14.08. Mayer is in front at the first

0:23:19 > 0:23:26intermediate.Looking for signs of wind on the track. It looks like

0:23:26 > 0:23:31Mayer's having a fairly clean run with no gusts. Through the paradise

0:23:31 > 0:23:37turn. That is the left-hander where people have been cutting it off and

0:23:37 > 0:23:43going through the gat. It looked there was a bit of a head wind

0:23:43 > 0:23:54there.Next intermediate for Dressen. He is in touch. Six

0:23:54 > 0:24:00hundredths off the pace. It is clean it is fast - oh, it is huge! What a

0:24:00 > 0:24:10jump! He almost put an old school twister in there. Spectacular skiing

0:24:10 > 0:24:19from Mayer. He has some air time and he has got some speed.Still the

0:24:19 > 0:24:23fastest time from the first man down the mountain. But Mayer has come

0:24:23 > 0:24:34close. Good finish. Mayer has skied into third position. Via a

0:24:34 > 0:24:43spectacular jump which gave him a huge amount of height and distance.

0:24:44 > 0:24:53Jansrud on his way. He along with Svindal, the trail blazers for the

0:24:53 > 0:24:59Norwegian men's team.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04Norwegian men's team. Jansrud with a chance to win one, two, possibly

0:25:04 > 0:25:09three medals - if everything goes according to plan.What's happened

0:25:09 > 0:25:16is the tail wind that Dressen had has died away, rather than the guys

0:25:16 > 0:25:21getting a strong head wind, it is more a lack of tail wind. Jansrud is

0:25:21 > 0:25:27doing a good job in difficult conditions. He does haven't that

0:25:27 > 0:25:34advantage of a tail wind.Within half a second of Dressen's lead.

0:25:34 > 0:25:41This could set things alight rather. There is his great team mate, his

0:25:41 > 0:25:50mate, Svindal, he is in second. He has skied into fourth.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58has skied into fourth. Innerhoffer the bronze medallist in Sochi.

0:25:58 > 0:26:04Innerhofer came in for bronze nor Italy. He has got to put down a

0:26:04 > 0:26:10serious run. He has to go close, if not quicker than Dressen and he is

0:26:10 > 0:26:17quicker at the first split.Good stuff in the Italian. He does like

0:26:17 > 0:26:28it icy and he has got that today. Innerhofer had a difficult time in

0:26:28 > 0:26:34January. Did the double, crashing twice in the two biggest down hill

0:26:34 > 0:26:38races of the season. Got away with it. No injuries. How close is he to

0:26:38 > 0:26:46Dressen here? It is a good run, he is fifth with start No 25 Innerhofer

0:26:46 > 0:26:53is in the mix. No change. It is still Dressen who leads.

0:27:05 > 0:27:15The race is under way. He should be the first man to complete the

0:27:15 > 0:27:23course. He has won a World Cup combined event already this season.

0:27:23 > 0:27:28He is starting on a nice, clean track. There is a lot of offset in

0:27:28 > 0:27:33this slalom run. And he has an early start number. He will need to put a

0:27:33 > 0:27:38good run down. It is 2.23 down on the winner of the first run,

0:27:38 > 0:27:43Dressen. So he will be disappointed with his down hill. But he could

0:27:43 > 0:27:48gate medal from this position if he puts a great slalom run.No one has

0:27:48 > 0:27:56gone before him. He has a nice fresh canvas and he is carving some sweet

0:27:56 > 0:28:07turns the French man. His combined time added to slalom is 2.07.54.

0:28:07 > 0:28:17That is the bench mark now. Here he is, a regular slalom specialist. He

0:28:17 > 0:28:21will attack the first part of the course. You can tell the difference

0:28:21 > 0:28:25between those who ski regularly top level slalom and those who

0:28:25 > 0:28:28occasionally dabble. He is still in the green, but nearly all the

0:28:28 > 0:28:35advantage has gone.He is really skidding. You can see that from the

0:28:35 > 0:28:40snow coming out from under the skis. This is the tricky undergate, the

0:28:40 > 0:28:46banana as he comes on to the final pitch.Still potentially God enough

0:28:46 > 0:28:55to go into -- good enough to go into silver medal position. First to

0:28:55 > 0:29:04second separated by 0.43. With swarz finish with a flourish? He has come

0:29:04 > 0:29:10close, within 0.33.

0:29:17 > 0:29:25Now the Hirscher. Skied a beautiful down hill leg this morning. The one

0:29:25 > 0:29:30thing that is missing from his trophy cabinet is an Olympic gold.

0:29:30 > 0:29:36Can he put that right today? It is looking good. But not as clean as

0:29:36 > 0:29:44the Frenchman on the top part of course. He is going for it now.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48Risking everything on this second run.He is adding to his lead. He is

0:29:48 > 0:29:53doing what he does best in the alpine skiing world - the wind is

0:29:53 > 0:29:59there, but he is battling through it. He doesn't seem to car. The wind

0:29:59 > 0:30:05is whipping up, trying its best to distract Hirscher. Can he do enough

0:30:05 > 0:30:12to move into gold medal position? Yes, comfortably, more than a

0:30:12 > 0:30:21second! Glorious skiing.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26There is the man who could change things around. Alexis Pinturault

0:30:26 > 0:30:33from France. He pushes hard out of the start gate but doesn't have an

0:30:33 > 0:30:38awful lot over Hirscher coming into the second leg of today's Alpine

0:30:38 > 0:30:44combined. 0.28 is the lead, starting well enough. Counter rotated as he

0:30:44 > 0:30:50went on the turn, but it's a great recovery from Pinturault. Again, the

0:30:50 > 0:30:54same mistake, jutting out on the turn. Hirscher was so good on the

0:30:54 > 0:30:57lower part of the course.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07It's still good enough potentially for silver medal position. But

0:31:07 > 0:31:11Marcel Hirscher was so quick in the bottom half. There is no way

0:31:11 > 0:31:17Pinturault can move into gold. He has gone into second.Didn't have

0:31:17 > 0:31:21the wind Hirscher had on the lower part of the course. He could catch

0:31:21 > 0:31:26up some but I think it's all decided now. Hirscher, gold. Pinturault,

0:31:26 > 0:31:37Silver.Pinturault gave it everything. Back to the top.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43everything. Back to the top. With just want to come, Hirscher and

0:31:43 > 0:31:56Pinturault are guaranteed medals. Can Muffat-Jeandet be beaten to

0:31:56 > 0:32:04bronze?Can he squeeze into the bronze medal position? If he wants

0:32:04 > 0:32:10the bronze, he has to finish within 1.01 seconds of Marcel Hirscher.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14Trailing the great Austrian at the split. But that was tidy. That was

0:32:14 > 0:32:19OK.

0:32:19 > 0:32:25OK.It's growing, 1.566 and almost certainly out of reach. The French

0:32:25 > 0:32:30are starting to think they will take two medals out of the men's Alpine

0:32:30 > 0:32:36combined. Thomas Dressen living dangerously, but finishing in ninth.

0:32:36 > 0:32:41The medals are decided. At last, Marcel Hirscher is an Olympic

0:32:41 > 0:32:46champion. He takes the men's Alpine combined gold medal. Pinturault with

0:32:46 > 0:32:56silver. And the bronze medal goes to Muffat-Jeandet. STUDIO:

0:32:57 > 0:33:02It's very difficult to switch from downhill to slalom skiing. They are

0:33:02 > 0:33:10changing their whole equipment, dynamic really charging skis and

0:33:10 > 0:33:14it's really different skills. It's been favouring the slalom and

0:33:14 > 0:33:18technical skiers in last few seasons. We saw the podium today,

0:33:18 > 0:33:24out and out slalom skiers. The downhill was shortened. I read that

0:33:24 > 0:33:28they took ten gates out of the slalom to try to make it fair. The

0:33:28 > 0:33:35downhill was slower than it should be. Apart from Matthias Mayer, who

0:33:35 > 0:33:38had huge air, a lot of them had less air than in the downhill special

0:33:38 > 0:33:42because they went around the top of the jumps. It changed the line.

0:33:42 > 0:33:48Marcel Hirscher with his first Olympic gold medal.I know!People

0:33:48 > 0:33:51talk about him as one of the greatest technical skiers of all

0:33:51 > 0:33:56time. Talk us through him.

0:33:56 > 0:33:57greatest technical skiers of all time. Talk us through him.Look at

0:33:57 > 0:34:00this confidence, only Hirscher could charge through that wind gust. You

0:34:00 > 0:34:06couldn't even see the bottom of the gate. He accelerated through the

0:34:06 > 0:34:10bottom section. His position and attention to detail, he is on the

0:34:10 > 0:34:10edge

0:34:10 > 0:34:12attention to detail, he is on the edge of the angle. You can see the

0:34:12 > 0:34:16base of the skis more than other skiers because he lays over the top

0:34:16 > 0:34:21of the turn and there is a big risk in that.Switching from downhill to

0:34:21 > 0:34:22slalom.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24in that.Switching from downhill to slalom. Matthias Mayer, the

0:34:24 > 0:34:30defending downhill champion, he started in the slalom, Svindal

0:34:30 > 0:34:36didn't, but...That is just a struggle, but he fell really well,

0:34:36 > 0:34:42he didn't panic.I don't know about the cameraman!We believe the course

0:34:42 > 0:34:48worker is OK, the one he took out. It is very icy and steep. He's

0:34:48 > 0:34:52looking where he's going, he's chilled out. The worst thing to do

0:34:52 > 0:34:57when you fall in skiing is digging in your feet. That's why so many

0:34:57 > 0:35:01tourists injure their ACL because they try to stop themselves falling.

0:35:01 > 0:35:09You have to relax your body.Jelly time, don't dig your feet in.

0:35:09 > 0:35:22Lessons in how to fall. Let's look at the medal table.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28It's not want to see whether Great Britain can make it onto the table.

0:35:28 > 0:35:39That's coming up this morning. -- it's not long to see.

0:35:42 > 0:35:52They've gone down!Can Elise Christie make a clean start?

0:35:52 > 0:36:04Christie is out of the gate quickly. Christie leads.Christie wins it.

0:36:04 > 0:36:08STUDIO: This is Elise Christie's morning, and she will compete in

0:36:08 > 0:36:14that arena in less than 13 minutes. Counting down to her quarterfinal in

0:36:14 > 0:36:22the 500 metres. About a week ago I went out to Seoul to chat with her.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25Four years ago in Sochi our own Elise Christie had high hopes of

0:36:25 > 0:36:36glory. But her Winter Olympic dream turned into a nightmare.

0:36:40 > 0:36:46They've gone down! Christie might receive a penalty for that.When I

0:36:46 > 0:36:51got off the 500, I was upset. Christie has been penalised again.

0:36:51 > 0:37:00Can't believe this has happened.In the 15 I was actually confused.Oh

0:37:00 > 0:37:09no, I can't believe it.What on earth is going on?When I got off

0:37:09 > 0:37:20the 1000, I was more numb than anything else.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24After that, there was a lot of death threats and online abuse. It's

0:37:24 > 0:37:29mostly came from Korea. I spent six months afterwards feeling scared of

0:37:29 > 0:37:34being in my house on my own and going out on my own. So many at once

0:37:34 > 0:37:39made it feels so real. It was a very difficult time.Do you think you are

0:37:39 > 0:37:46more resilient is now to all of that, and to the outside world?Yes

0:37:46 > 0:37:52and no. Definitely more resilient in terms of, I get that people are

0:37:52 > 0:37:56hiding behind their computer screen now.How different do you think you

0:37:56 > 0:38:03are now mentally to four years ago? Very different. I was naive four

0:38:03 > 0:38:06years ago and less confident than I am now. My mental state back then

0:38:06 > 0:38:12relied on my outcomes. So if I didn't do well, it would affect my

0:38:12 > 0:38:15whole season. Because I lost a lot of confidence and couldn't fight

0:38:15 > 0:38:20back from it. One of the biggest changes for me was accepting

0:38:20 > 0:38:24failure. Now I feel I am prepared to go out and put everything into

0:38:24 > 0:38:28winning. If I don't win than I am still happier than if I had just

0:38:28 > 0:38:34settled for a medal. We are in Korea, and they are very keen on

0:38:34 > 0:38:38short track speed skating. It's very cool. Even on the streets I get

0:38:38 > 0:38:41stopped and people want to take pictures. They just really happy to

0:38:41 > 0:38:45see you. It makes you feel a lot better about that online abuse

0:38:45 > 0:38:50because you know in the street everybody is just happy to see you.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54You seem incredibly relaxed. Definitely. There's nothing I could

0:38:54 > 0:39:00have done more to put myself in a better place. It is what will be. I

0:39:00 > 0:39:03have no control if somebody wants to take me out in the first round to

0:39:03 > 0:39:07get me out of the competition. There will be so many people rooting for

0:39:07 > 0:39:12you, and it could yet be one of the great tales of redemption. It would

0:39:12 > 0:39:20be great.Yeah. I got my redemption at the World Championships.She's

0:39:20 > 0:39:24done it, the world champion, Elise Christie. But I see the Olympics as

0:39:24 > 0:39:28a way to give back to everybody who supported me through that hard time

0:39:28 > 0:39:33and I would love to come home with the gold medal so everybody who has

0:39:33 > 0:39:36supported me thinks it's worthwhile. They are the reason I kept going. I

0:39:36 > 0:39:40didn't want to do it any more. Everybody was full of compliments

0:39:40 > 0:39:44and support and I felt I had to do it because everybody had put so much

0:39:44 > 0:39:52into it and believed in me. I had to at least try. That's important,

0:39:52 > 0:39:55everybody must know that I tried my best and did everything I could. So,

0:39:55 > 0:40:03yeah, that's the goal.STUDIO: She knows what she needs to do, she

0:40:03 > 0:40:07knows what she wants to do. In the warm up area, Elise Christie with

0:40:07 > 0:40:12her coach, Nicky Gooch, going through that routine, Sarah,

0:40:12 > 0:40:16practising her start and getting relaxed. She's getting into the

0:40:16 > 0:40:21game, getting ready for the start. You need to be really focused and

0:40:21 > 0:40:24get the absolute right level of arousal. You have to be ready to go

0:40:24 > 0:40:33from the gun and relax into it and get the laps done. She was so

0:40:33 > 0:40:36interesting, that line between being safe and contained and doing what

0:40:36 > 0:40:40you know you can do, because she could win a medal almost with her

0:40:40 > 0:40:43eyes shut. But then racing with the idea that the same thing could

0:40:43 > 0:40:47happen again and she could get disqualified. She has to take

0:40:47 > 0:40:52whatever risks to win. She isn't going there for a bronze or silver

0:40:52 > 0:40:56medal. You have to fully commit to the gold. If she was in second

0:40:56 > 0:41:00place, for example, and there was the risk of her making an overtake

0:41:00 > 0:41:03for gold, she will not settle for silver and I think she will go for

0:41:03 > 0:41:08it. Although its killer for us, I think it means she can then walk

0:41:08 > 0:41:12away knowing she gave it everything. If she settled, she would not be

0:41:12 > 0:41:17happy.She said at the World Championships just after the

0:41:17 > 0:41:21Olympics that she did sort of settle for playing safe. And her boyfriend,

0:41:21 > 0:41:27who is also a world champion, got cross with her.We know what she can

0:41:27 > 0:41:32do, we know her potential. But with Elise, it comes down to confidence.

0:41:32 > 0:41:38We talked about Marcel Hirscher being a great ski of all time, that

0:41:38 > 0:41:45is never having had a gold medal at the Olympics.Elise Christie is

0:41:45 > 0:41:49similar, she is the best, and she has a shelf full of trophies and

0:41:49 > 0:41:53medals and there is no other title left to be won apart from the

0:41:53 > 0:41:57Olympics.What are the rules in terms of interference? It might take

0:41:57 > 0:42:03you a date to explain it, but what are you allowed to do Testa with

0:42:03 > 0:42:09regards overtaking and contact with other skaters.Contact is

0:42:09 > 0:42:13inevitable, but it can't be deliberate. You normally overtake on

0:42:13 > 0:42:16the inside in the faster races because going round the outside is

0:42:16 > 0:42:20further and nobody has the speed. You overtake on the inside and you

0:42:20 > 0:42:24have to be level with the person you are overtaking going into the corner

0:42:24 > 0:42:27otherwise that person could shut down the track. If you make it level

0:42:27 > 0:42:37then you have to do is leave the Space.I suspect that arena will

0:42:37 > 0:42:41keep filling as we get closer to the final with South Koreans very keen

0:42:41 > 0:42:45on short track speed skating. A lot of Japanese fans there as well and a

0:42:45 > 0:42:49lot of British fans have travelled over to support Elise Christie and

0:42:49 > 0:42:54Charlotte Gilmartin and the others. Elise normally has a good crowd

0:42:54 > 0:42:59following her. She has a very close family and lots of support from GB

0:42:59 > 0:43:02will stop Elise Christie will be in the second of the four

0:43:02 > 0:43:07quarterfinals.The commentary team are in position, primed and waiting

0:43:07 > 0:43:12for what could be a moment of Winter Olympic history. Wilf O'Reilly is

0:43:12 > 0:43:17alongside Simon Brotherton.

0:43:17 > 0:43:23COMMENTATOR: Good morning, everyone. We are hovering above the finishing

0:43:23 > 0:43:28line, and we wonder who will cross it first in a couple of hours' time.

0:43:28 > 0:43:32Not long until the quarterfinals in the women's 500 metres. Elise

0:43:32 > 0:43:36Christie in the second of the quarterfinals. Less than three

0:43:36 > 0:43:41quarters of a minute for each one, they are so fast and so much can

0:43:41 > 0:43:46happen in a short space of time. But when you look at Elise Christie's

0:43:46 > 0:43:49draw for the quarterfinal, Wilf O'Reilly, let's be honest, it's as

0:43:49 > 0:43:54good as she could have hoped for. Absolutely. I think she has drawn an

0:43:54 > 0:44:00excellent race, depending on the others, of course. She has the first

0:44:00 > 0:44:05in a lane, the shortest distance to the first block. She had a superb

0:44:05 > 0:44:09start on Saturday, so I expect nothing else than for her to make it

0:44:09 > 0:44:13comfortably through the quarterfinals. What is the key to

0:44:13 > 0:44:17the 500 metres? Is it getting the first bend in the first place? It

0:44:17 > 0:44:21does help. If you have nobody in front of you, you can get to the

0:44:21 > 0:44:26first bend first, and she is so good at high speed and she can skate away

0:44:26 > 0:44:35from the rest of the group. The skaters are getting ready. Arianna

0:44:35 > 0:44:40Fontana is the Italian skater with whom Elise Christie collided in the

0:44:40 > 0:44:43Olympic final four years ago. Thankfully they are not together in

0:44:43 > 0:44:48the last eight this time, in the quarterfinal, I should say. There is

0:44:48 > 0:44:56Fontana.

0:44:56 > 0:45:02I was calculating - two winners will go into two semi-finals, the other

0:45:02 > 0:45:09will go into the other semi-final. If Fontana win and Christie, they

0:45:09 > 0:45:15will probably meet in the semi-final.

0:45:16 > 0:45:19semi-final.Fontana five-time Olympic medallists, she is yet to

0:45:19 > 0:45:32win a gold. Van Kerkhof is there and St Gelais. Her form is really good.

0:45:32 > 0:45:38She was second

0:45:38 > 0:45:45She was second in the World Championship. Maliszewska on the

0:45:45 > 0:45:49outside. Four and a half laps of the track. The quarter-finals are under

0:45:49 > 0:45:57way and... Not at the first attempt. I think that was Fontana from Italy

0:45:57 > 0:46:03on the inside. Of course, the race is only allowed one false start.

0:46:03 > 0:46:08This means we can see on the inside in the blue, Fontana was the first

0:46:08 > 0:46:14one I think... As the skaters come back to the line, the referee, the

0:46:14 > 0:46:21starter will inform which skater was given the false start. It is

0:46:21 > 0:46:26actually Maliszewska from Poland who was just trying to steal a march on

0:46:26 > 0:46:38the others. Here we go and they're away. Fonn tana... Van Kerkhof has

0:46:38 > 0:46:45gone down. Fontana on the front and they stop the race, because she fell

0:46:45 > 0:46:52to the ice so early. The skaters have to go through the first turn

0:46:52 > 0:46:55without colliding, without any problem, otherwise the starter will

0:46:55 > 0:47:01restart the

0:47:01 > 0:47:06restart the race and I must say St Gelais was very aggressive there.

0:47:06 > 0:47:12You can see it here again. She got that left arm just in front of her,

0:47:12 > 0:47:16although she wasn't completely past her, you see van Kerkhof of the

0:47:16 > 0:47:23Netherlands going down.St Gelais was not going to give an inch there.

0:47:23 > 0:47:32So important to get the right position going into that first bend.

0:47:32 > 0:47:39It could be interesting that St Gelais could receive a penalty. We

0:47:39 > 0:47:44have seen a lot of video reviews. We saw them on the first night on

0:47:44 > 0:47:50Saturday. But usually at the end of the race. This time as early as the

0:47:50 > 0:48:01first corner. That's right. The referee from the United States

0:48:01 > 0:48:06looking at this video replay. It was an aggressive piece of skating by

0:48:06 > 0:48:10the Canadian. I would be very interested to see whether or not she

0:48:10 > 0:48:16will receive a penalty.

0:48:16 > 0:48:20will receive a penalty.Somebody's night could be over already here. A

0:48:20 > 0:48:26very prominent skater indeed. Absolutely. How will this affect the

0:48:26 > 0:48:31others nut later heats in terms of their state and mind and warm up

0:48:31 > 0:48:37time? Will it affect much for them? We should a decision by the way

0:48:37 > 0:48:41shortly.I think that this young lady will have to leave the ice. We

0:48:41 > 0:48:49have to wait for the official result.

0:48:49 > 0:48:55result.Anxious moments for St Gelais as we wait for the outcome of

0:48:55 > 0:49:00this first video review.

0:49:01 > 0:49:08this first video review. A Mariann St Gelais has been penalised and the

0:49:08 > 0:49:13three-time Olympic silver medallist is forced to leave the ice before

0:49:13 > 0:49:17the quarter-final.Frederick Blackburn, the Canadian coach not

0:49:17 > 0:49:23looking very happy at all. It is very unusual to see this. But she

0:49:23 > 0:49:27was so aggressive into that first turn. The referees had no option

0:49:27 > 0:49:37really.She blocked van Kerkhof off with that left arm and shoulder. So

0:49:37 > 0:49:46two of these three will go through to the semi-final.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49to the semi-final. Let's if they can get around the first bend at the

0:49:49 > 0:49:55third time of asking. Fontana has the speed to go out in front. Van

0:49:55 > 0:50:02Kerkhof in second. The outsider is Maliszewska and Fontana leading the

0:50:02 > 0:50:08way. It is a four and a half lap race. The absence of St Gelais has

0:50:08 > 0:50:13made life easier for Fontana and given van Kerkhof an opportunity to

0:50:13 > 0:50:19go through as well. Maliszewska is staying in the running. I'm not sure

0:50:19 > 0:50:23if she will have the speed the get past the Dutch woman. Fontana all

0:50:23 > 0:50:29the way. She looks as if she will lead from start to finish. Van

0:50:29 > 0:50:36Kerkhof in second and third Maliszewska. Fontana, the silver

0:50:36 > 0:50:43medallist in 2014 and van Kerkhof are through.Not a very quick time.

0:50:43 > 0:50:5143.14. That will mean Fontana will she goes through, I predicted she

0:50:51 > 0:50:58would win and if Elise Christie does win, depending on her time and the

0:50:58 > 0:51:03remaining times, that Fontana could meet Christie in the semi-final.

0:51:03 > 0:51:09Here we are again. Watching the end of this first quarter-final. That

0:51:09 > 0:51:21was in the end straight forward for Ariana Fontana.

0:51:21 > 0:51:26Ariana Fontana. She made it look easy. You try to conserve your

0:51:26 > 0:51:31energy, because you're coming back out in half an hour to do another

0:51:31 > 0:51:40full sprint of 500 metres.Now it is Elise Christie.

0:51:48 > 0:51:58There is Elise Christie, the world record holder at this distance.

0:52:04 > 0:52:13The start needs to be good. Away they go the first time. Boutin

0:52:13 > 0:52:22leads. Christie second. Seidel with plenty of work to do. Christie,

0:52:22 > 0:52:25smart move, sliding through on the inside. Takes the advantage over

0:52:25 > 0:52:30Boutin. These two are the favourites to go through from this. They should

0:52:30 > 0:52:35be the class of the field and at the moment that is kwha it looks like.

0:52:35 > 0:52:40It will be interesting to see the time. Christie leading the way.

0:52:40 > 0:52:44They're on the last lap. At the moment she is going through. Boutin

0:52:44 > 0:52:51is behind her. Up to the line and... Elise Christie takes it. Boutin

0:52:51 > 0:52:56slides over the line on her backside. But Elise Christie has

0:52:56 > 0:53:00successfully negotiated the first hurdle of the day. That was a superb

0:53:00 > 0:53:11time, a new Olympic record I think if that time remains.The unofficial

0:53:11 > 0:53:21time says 42.71. Let's look at the race again here.Superb start from

0:53:21 > 0:53:26the Canadian, it worked well for Christie. She had the first one and

0:53:26 > 0:53:31a half laps to relax. She is normally, you have the heats, the

0:53:31 > 0:53:35quarter-finals and the semi-finals and the final all in the same time.

0:53:35 > 0:53:41This quarter-final for her was trying to get into the racing and we

0:53:41 > 0:53:45can see Keszler sliding out coming into the last turn. I don't think

0:53:45 > 0:53:49the referees will have any say to that. It is Christie No 1 and Boutin

0:53:49 > 0:53:59No 2.It is confirmed as a new Olympic record, 42.703 seconds.

0:53:59 > 0:54:03Christie and Boutin are through and Christie is going faster and faster

0:54:03 > 0:54:13here.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39Away they go in this third semi-final. Fan from China is in

0:54:39 > 0:54:49this and she is at the front. She is the five-time world champion.

0:54:51 > 0:54:55Prosvirnova in second. Biney bringing up the rear. She was third

0:54:55 > 0:55:01in the world junior Championships only last year. So a big step up for

0:55:01 > 0:55:16her. Prosvirnova goes to the front. Kexin parked up in second place. The

0:55:16 > 0:55:23two Chinese athletes are challenging, but Kexin and

0:55:23 > 0:55:28Prosvirnova are the first two over the line.A superb bit of skating

0:55:28 > 0:55:32from Prosvirnova and a surprise the two Chinese skaters didn't

0:55:32 > 0:55:37qualified. They have Dom nayed this -- dominated this 500 metres over

0:55:37 > 0:55:46the last four Olympics and now one has been knocked out. A superb start

0:55:46 > 0:55:54from Fan. A bit of argy-bargy through the first turn and Christie

0:55:54 > 0:56:00having skated that Olympic record, she will be for sure on the inside

0:56:00 > 0:56:08for that semi-final.

0:56:08 > 0:56:12for that semi-final.Maame Biney couldn't be competitive, but

0:56:12 > 0:56:19Prosvirnova, that is a sensational result for her. That is her best

0:56:19 > 0:56:23performance of season. There is confirmation. Fan through in second

0:56:23 > 0:56:35place. Behind the Russian athlete. We lose Han Yutong. The home crowd

0:56:35 > 0:56:43getting excited. Another of the favourites to take the gold here.

0:56:43 > 0:56:48The 19-year-old.

0:57:02 > 0:57:18The last quarter-final. Clean start and Valcepina goes to the front. Qu

0:57:18 > 0:57:29in second. No panic from Choi Minjeong. Still Choi had a look and

0:57:29 > 0:57:35couldn't find a way through. Valcepina is looking good here. A

0:57:35 > 0:57:39bit of air and Minjeong is still searching and sliding and trying to

0:57:39 > 0:57:46find a way through. She has the speed and Valcepina is now under

0:57:46 > 0:57:51pressure. Qu is there. But Valcepina is back. It will be a photo finish.

0:57:51 > 0:57:58What a sensational final lap. Amazing skating this. The Koreans

0:57:58 > 0:58:05and the Chinese have dominated this event over the years. Now the

0:58:05 > 0:58:09Europeans, Valcepina was my outside winner for getting into the final.

0:58:09 > 0:58:17We are going to have to wait for the photo.Qu looked as if she was first

0:58:17 > 0:58:27across the line. What a desperate lunge to line that was. They're away

0:58:27 > 0:58:32cleanly first time. Minjeong you could see was having a look and

0:58:32 > 0:58:39finally she made her move. She did and it looks like Choi has made it.

0:58:39 > 0:58:45The roar tells you that Choi Minjeong has gone through in second

0:58:45 > 0:58:52place behind Qu and Christie is by the fastest qualifier. She will be

0:58:52 > 0:58:58ensured of having the inner lane for the semi-final.The European

0:58:58 > 0:59:06champion, Valcepina going out, for a long time, she looked good. She did.

0:59:06 > 0:59:13It all went wrong for the Italian at the end. There is the photo finish

0:59:13 > 0:59:23and Choi Minjeong one of the favourites joining Chunyu Qu in the

0:59:23 > 0:59:29Cem Ji final. -- semi-final. There is confirmation of the result of the

0:59:29 > 0:59:33fourth quarter final.

0:59:42 > 0:59:51Next up is the men's 1,000 metres.

0:59:51 > 0:59:57They're just resurfacing the ice. Elise Christie is the fastest

0:59:57 > 1:00:03qualifier in a new Olympic record time. From her point of view, so far

1:00:03 > 1:00:10so good, potentially two races to go.

1:00:18 > 1:00:25STUDIO: And the reaction from Sarah Lindsay on how she did.She built

1:00:25 > 1:00:31her speed. She had a little gap to build her speed into. Sets it up

1:00:31 > 1:00:35perfectly. Lots of speed into the corner, flies out and straight up

1:00:35 > 1:00:39the inside. Not any kind of contact, going through completely cleanly

1:00:39 > 1:00:44with lots more speed than the other girls. Perfect execution of the

1:00:44 > 1:00:50overtake.Is she is somebody who bills with confidence and having set

1:00:50 > 1:00:55another Olympic record and winning her quarterfinal easily? It's all

1:00:55 > 1:00:59about confidence for Elise. She knows she has even more speed. Even

1:00:59 > 1:01:02when you are time trialling in front, there is nothing to judge

1:01:02 > 1:01:06against apart from the clock. Now she knows she has been behind

1:01:06 > 1:01:12somebody, she can set up and execute such a perfect overtake. It was an

1:01:12 > 1:01:16undertaker, actually. And it's waiting for that moment on spotting

1:01:16 > 1:01:26the gap, so her instinct is sharp. There is no panicking, no

1:01:26 > 1:01:29There is no panicking, no rushing, there is no time to think, but trust

1:01:29 > 1:01:32your instincts. The others are trying so hard to qualify behind.

1:01:32 > 1:01:39They are trying to keep up.There were a few shocks in some of the

1:01:39 > 1:01:43other quarterfinals. Notably, the disqualification of Canada's

1:01:43 > 1:01:49Marianne St Gelais. It's a shame, she is an excellent skater and

1:01:49 > 1:01:53silver medallist in the last Olympics. Always a huge force in the

1:01:53 > 1:01:57500 metres. She was disqualified from the start, so she is out, and

1:01:57 > 1:02:03one of the main forces is now out of 500 metres. We can see from these

1:02:03 > 1:02:11shots, you end up with bodies all over the place. Canada's Marianne St

1:02:11 > 1:02:16Gelais, on the first corner.I think it's a little bit unfair. It was the

1:02:16 > 1:02:21same thing I got disqualified for! Nobody has the lane or priority

1:02:21 > 1:02:26until you get to the middle block of the first corner. You always expect

1:02:26 > 1:02:30a bit of argy-bargy at the start with everybody going for it.And if

1:02:30 > 1:02:36they fall before the first corner you get to rerun it, don't they?

1:02:36 > 1:02:39Before the middle block of the first corner. If you fall over and there

1:02:39 > 1:02:44is contact then they will restart the race.So it's worth being

1:02:44 > 1:02:49aggressive at the start?Normally. That's what happened to you?Is the

1:02:49 > 1:02:53second time I have seen it happened. The judge got band who made the

1:02:53 > 1:02:59decision.The referee from that Olympics did serve a two-year ban

1:02:59 > 1:03:08because of his decision. But they don't rerun the Olympics! That's it.

1:03:08 > 1:03:13Do you feel you are living through Elise now?Maybe that's what's

1:03:13 > 1:03:18happening. Me and Elise are very close and I love her very much. I

1:03:18 > 1:03:21would love to see her do it because I know how much it means to her and

1:03:21 > 1:03:25I know what it means to be in that situation. And she has a huge

1:03:25 > 1:03:29turn-off pressure on her to perform. If she can handle this, then she can

1:03:29 > 1:03:40handle anything. 1110 AM will be the next time we see Elise Christie. We

1:03:40 > 1:03:46will have a bit of a break now, catching up on ice hockey from

1:03:46 > 1:03:49women's group letter A, and the defending champions Canada who are

1:03:49 > 1:03:53looking for a fifth consecutive gold medal, so dominant, up against

1:03:53 > 1:04:02Finland. COMMENTATOR: Canada holding a pretty strong edge. The last

1:04:02 > 1:04:07meeting, crucially, was a 4-3 victory for Finland, so they know

1:04:07 > 1:04:12what it takes in the group phases of the competition to beat this Canada

1:04:12 > 1:04:18side, having done it not so long ago. Other meetings between them

1:04:18 > 1:04:23have taken a couple of empty net gold medals. They have been close

1:04:23 > 1:04:27going into the final few minutes of games. That'll be one of the keys to

1:04:27 > 1:04:33the game, not making mistakes like that. This could be an opportunity.

1:04:33 > 1:04:41Brilliant! Going to the back door. There was the fake. What a start for

1:04:41 > 1:04:50Canada. Terrific pressure, melody picks up the pass and creates the

1:04:50 > 1:04:56211 with Augusta.

1:04:58 > 1:05:02211 with Augusta.Taking control for Canada. Spooner was offside again.

1:05:02 > 1:05:07What a finish!

1:05:12 > 1:05:17What a finish! Play continues. This is remarkable. They thought it was

1:05:17 > 1:05:21in the back of the net. The referee was standing right there and waved

1:05:21 > 1:05:30it off. You know they will go to a video replay to see

1:05:30 > 1:05:33video replay to see if the puck went in and out in the blink of an eye.

1:05:33 > 1:05:39That's a goal. The puck was wobbling on her. That happens at the end of

1:05:39 > 1:05:48the period. But this is a goal. After video review, we have a good

1:05:48 > 1:05:52goal.They will put the time back on the clock that elapsed from that

1:05:52 > 1:06:03moment. Canada now leading 2-0.

1:06:04 > 1:06:11Working it back towards the blue line.

1:06:11 > 1:06:19line. The pressure in the end paid for Canada.

1:06:19 > 1:06:24for Canada. You can only stem the tide for so long.

1:06:28 > 1:06:36Finland think about allying change. 4-0.Terrific pass from Rebecca

1:06:36 > 1:06:48Johnson. And look at the shop from Saunier. So precise.

1:06:54 > 1:06:59The good opportunity for Finland is to try to make something happen. Can

1:06:59 > 1:07:09they use the puck wisely? It's forced over the line. It's a goal of

1:07:09 > 1:07:13history.

1:07:15 > 1:07:19history. Back and right at it. Needed three bytes of the cherry,

1:07:19 > 1:07:26but she wasn't going to mess.Very fast, terrific execution. Really

1:07:26 > 1:07:36caught Finland on their heels early on.

1:07:36 > 1:07:47on. Just playing it out. The netminder, Shannon Szabados, not

1:07:47 > 1:07:53called on enough from a Finnish perspective.Canada through to the

1:07:53 > 1:07:56quarterfinals after a strong performance against the Finland

1:07:56 > 1:08:02side, they hung in their

1:08:02 > 1:08:05side, they hung in their, but couldn't do enough. STUDIO: Well

1:08:05 > 1:08:08done to Finland for scoring, but they couldn't do enough to overturn

1:08:08 > 1:08:13Canada. The United States against the Olympic athletes of Russia, we

1:08:13 > 1:08:17will show that to you later. I suspect that will be a mean old

1:08:17 > 1:08:24match. In terms of the semifinals for a Elise Christie coming up at

1:08:24 > 1:08:2911:10am, it looks like she will be in a separate semifinal to Arianna

1:08:29 > 1:08:33Fontana of Italy, and significantly, Choi Minjeong of South Korea, going

1:08:33 > 1:08:38into the other semifinal. Is that good news, Sarah? It's swings and

1:08:38 > 1:08:42roundabouts. It means she probably has a slightly easier semifinal that

1:08:42 > 1:08:46you could have had, which is great, but if you beat those people in the

1:08:46 > 1:08:51semis then you don't have them in the final. This is not just a

1:08:51 > 1:08:571-person short track speed skating team. We'll see Josh Cheetham at his

1:08:57 > 1:09:00first Olympics and Farrell Treacy. Their first Olympic games. They both

1:09:00 > 1:09:07have very different tactics. Josh likes to read and control the race

1:09:07 > 1:09:12where he can, if he's feeling good. I expect him to be slightly higher

1:09:12 > 1:09:17up in the field. Farrell is happier to sit back and let the race happen.

1:09:17 > 1:09:24Take advantage of moves. He can let the race happen. Hopefully he has

1:09:24 > 1:09:30got rid of the nerves in his first round on Saturday. It's so tough in

1:09:30 > 1:09:33your first Olympic race.Add you noticed in the last few years an

1:09:33 > 1:09:37explosion of interest in short track speed skating because of what Elise

1:09:37 > 1:09:41has done around the world?I think a lot more people have been interested

1:09:41 > 1:09:45in the last few years and with Elise Christie's profile, and the better

1:09:45 > 1:09:50we are and the more medals we win, the more people are interested in

1:09:50 > 1:09:54watching. And with Elise being such a character, people are interested

1:09:54 > 1:09:59in her as a personality and that helps bring attention. If you want

1:09:59 > 1:10:03to get involved, go to the BBC website, get inspired, and you can

1:10:03 > 1:10:08find details of a club near you where you can learn to do short

1:10:08 > 1:10:12track speed skating. It's pretty exciting.Absolutely. They are

1:10:12 > 1:10:16trying to recruit new youngsters. We are quite weak there. At the top end

1:10:16 > 1:10:20it's an amazing team that's very well funded and looked after, but

1:10:20 > 1:10:25finding the talent for the sport, there isn't a lot happening there at

1:10:25 > 1:10:30the moment. There is the start of the show, the star of the team so

1:10:30 > 1:10:33far, Elise Christie having successfully qualified for the

1:10:33 > 1:10:39semifinals, 500 metres. Now double the distance, we can go back to Wilf

1:10:39 > 1:10:43O'Reilly and Simon Brotherton. COMMENTATOR: Welcome back to the

1:10:43 > 1:10:49Gangneung Oval. This is the first heat in the men's 1000 metres. The

1:10:49 > 1:10:531000 metres starting with eight heats of Paltrow, the first two from

1:10:53 > 1:10:59each heat going through, so potentially four races to be crowned

1:10:59 > 1:11:02Olympic champion. Britain's Farrell Treacy is in the first heat against

1:11:02 > 1:11:08the Hungarian world silver medallist in this event last year. And last

1:11:08 > 1:11:14season's World Cup winner over 1000 metres.

1:11:14 > 1:11:23metres. John Henry Kruger also in this heat, from the United States.

1:11:23 > 1:11:29Not an easy task for Farrell Treacy. Has some of the best skaters in the

1:11:29 > 1:11:37world in this first heat.Farrell Treacy raced in the 500 metres at

1:11:37 > 1:11:41the weekend, went out in the first heat. His best result in the 1000

1:11:41 > 1:11:48metres was 15th place in Shanghai this season.Nine laps to complete

1:11:48 > 1:11:55for the skaters in this 1000 metre heat.Farrell Treacy is the last to

1:11:55 > 1:12:06come to the line. Josh Cheetham is also racing for Great

1:12:07 > 1:12:14nine laps of the track as they fight for first place.

1:12:16 > 1:12:18for first place. Kruger of the United States currently in second

1:12:18 > 1:12:25behind the Chinese. Farrell Treacy gliding around at the rear.Kruger

1:12:25 > 1:12:30is at the front at the moment, trains with the Dutch team. He likes

1:12:30 > 1:12:39to make the race hard.

1:12:39 > 1:12:46to make the race hard.Krueger was a little unhappy in the 1500 metres

1:12:46 > 1:12:49over the weekend. He likes to have the bit between his teeth and make

1:12:49 > 1:12:53things happen. They are skating negative splits, every lap getting

1:12:53 > 1:13:02gradually quicker. He is doing what exactly he is always used to doing.

1:13:02 > 1:13:11A collision, it means Farrell Treacy finds himself in second place.

1:13:14 > 1:13:17Krueger leading the way with Farrell Treacy tucked in behind. Those are

1:13:17 > 1:13:22the only two standing at the moment, as they take the bell. Krueger will

1:13:22 > 1:13:28glide around in first place. Farrell Treacy, as it stands, he's heading

1:13:28 > 1:13:36through to the next round as they crossed the line. Real drama with

1:13:36 > 1:13:42the Japanese and Chinese competitors hitting the

1:13:43 > 1:13:48hitting the deck.I think the Japanese skater will be the skater

1:13:48 > 1:13:57to receive the penalty. It's not about timing, it's about positions.

1:13:57 > 1:14:04Skaters won and two qualify for the quarterfinals.Let's look at the

1:14:04 > 1:14:16incident again. What do you make of that?

1:14:16 > 1:14:20that?Not quite past, trying to get the left hand across him. Clearly

1:14:20 > 1:14:27wasn't passed, so I think the Hungarian will be the skater that

1:14:27 > 1:14:31receives the penalty. Peter Wirth, the British referee, going to the

1:14:31 > 1:14:36referee review. And what about Farrell Treacy? Superb skating from

1:14:36 > 1:14:41him. He stays out of trouble. You can either go to the front and stay

1:14:41 > 1:14:45out of trouble, or go to the back and stay out of trouble, and he

1:14:45 > 1:14:50opted for the latter. The referees having a look at it, not

1:14:50 > 1:15:01surprisingly. It is a penalty for the Hungarian. That's a big name out

1:15:01 > 1:15:06of the competition very early. This is last season's World Championship

1:15:06 > 1:15:11silver medal.

1:15:13 > 1:15:18The great news for Britain is Farrell Treacy goes through in the

1:15:18 > 1:15:25men's 1,000 metres. Sakazume, who was not at fault for that crash,

1:15:25 > 1:15:30also advances. The pressure here building. The skaters of his

1:15:30 > 1:15:39experience shouldn't be making those sort of simple mistakes. Here we go

1:15:39 > 1:15:45with the second heat.

1:15:47 > 1:15:53with the second heat. Breeuwsma from the Netherlands is there.

1:16:07 > 1:16:12Lim Hyojun is there. The Canadian leading. It seems to be a new

1:16:12 > 1:16:19strategy, what they do is negative splits, every lap getting faster as

1:16:19 > 1:16:30Lim storms around. The crowd are going wild in this 12,000 arena.

1:16:31 > 1:16:36Cournoyer reasserts his authority. Exchanging the lead between them.

1:16:36 > 1:16:42Four laps to go. Breeuwsma in the navy kit of the Netherlands having a

1:16:42 > 1:16:49look on the inside. There wasn't any way through. Now it is Yoshinaga

1:16:49 > 1:17:01from Japan on the front and the race is on here.

1:17:01 > 1:17:05is on here. Lim leads from Yoshinaga. They come around to take

1:17:05 > 1:17:16the bell, one lap to go. Lim leads. Yoshinaga senses he can go through.

1:17:16 > 1:17:27He will go through. Hyojun and Yoshinaga go through.A very fast

1:17:27 > 1:17:32race, a lot of passing and moving and Lim looks very comfortable and

1:17:32 > 1:17:37relaxed. I don't know why it seems like it is, but these skaters don't

1:17:37 > 1:17:42seem to be performing to their full potential. The thing about Lim he

1:17:42 > 1:17:48was good at the start of the season and won the World Cup race in

1:17:48 > 1:17:53Hungary, but he had a back injury which meant he was ruled out of

1:17:53 > 1:17:58everything else. So nobody was sure what his form was going to be. But

1:17:58 > 1:18:03based on his gold medal at the weekend, we know now and he has

1:18:03 > 1:18:11carried that form on in the heats of the 1 thousand metres.

1:18:13 > 1:18:20the 1 thousand metres.Tactics very important. If you get caught at the

1:18:20 > 1:18:30back, then...There is confirmation of the race. A race that didn't

1:18:30 > 1:18:34require any video review. Now there's a thing!The first one of

1:18:34 > 1:18:43the night!

1:18:44 > 1:18:52the night!Girard a world silver medallist in 2016.

1:18:52 > 1:19:00medallist in 2016. Elistratov a former world champion at 15 hundred.

1:19:00 > 1:19:06Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev is in this field as well. And Watanabe from

1:19:06 > 1:19:13Japan, his best result this winter ninth in Shanghai in the World Cup.

1:19:13 > 1:19:25Waiting for confirmation as to whose fault that was. It is position 3.

1:19:26 > 1:19:31Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev is in the last chance saloon. Girard

1:19:31 > 1:19:35considered one of next big things in world short track speed skating,

1:19:35 > 1:19:41goes to the front. Just missing a medal at the weekend. Nurbergen

1:19:41 > 1:19:47Zhumagaziyev gliding through on the inside to go to the front. This is a

1:19:47 > 1:19:53nine-lap race. Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev leading from Girard of

1:19:53 > 1:19:59Canada, who goes around the outside and Elistratov, who is in good form,

1:19:59 > 1:20:04currently in third. Watanabe at the back and finding it difficult to get

1:20:04 > 1:20:11a look in. Next time over the line they will have four laps to go.

1:20:11 > 1:20:20Girard controlling this race. He was He was fourth in the 15 hundred.

1:20:20 > 1:20:25These guys are used to the longer distances. The two at the front are

1:20:25 > 1:20:33the two you would expect to go through on paper.

1:20:33 > 1:20:37through on paper. Watanabe getting involved now. Elistratov nodded off

1:20:37 > 1:20:42and may pay for it as they take the bell. Elistratov has got to find a

1:20:42 > 1:20:49way past the Japanese skater, he just nudges him out of way. And

1:20:49 > 1:20:53Elistratov takes second. He was put under pressure but responded and

1:20:53 > 1:21:00forced his way through.

1:21:00 > 1:21:03forced his way through. We say you snooze you loose and that is what he

1:21:03 > 1:21:13did.What about Girard? He is a medal contend snerer. Yes

1:21:13 > 1:21:21absolutely. His team mate Hamlin got the penalty on Saturday. The

1:21:21 > 1:21:28Canadians are looking to do some stuff here.

1:21:30 > 1:21:42stuff here.Elistratov was put under pressure, but he kept his cool.Yes.

1:21:42 > 1:21:50Held his nerve and secured his place in the next round.

1:21:51 > 1:22:01in the next round. Confirmation of the result.

1:22:01 > 1:22:09the result. A clean heat between those athletes as we get ready for

1:22:09 > 1:22:14heat 4.

1:22:16 > 1:22:24heat 4. Thibaut Fauconnet from France. Ziwei from China. Knegt from

1:22:24 > 1:22:30the Netherlands, about Olympic silver medallists here. A bronze

1:22:30 > 1:22:40medallist in this event in Sochi. And Roberts Zvejnieks from Latvia.

1:22:40 > 1:22:52Fauconnet is in good form. Knegt is the big name in this heat.

1:22:53 > 1:23:03the big name in this heat. Heat No 4. Nine laps. Knegt trying to muscle

1:23:03 > 1:23:17his way in, but Fauconnet, the 32-year-old, settling in second.

1:23:17 > 1:23:30Zvejnieks with the band across his mid rift at the back.

1:23:31 > 1:23:36Fauconnet usually likes to lead from the front. Knegt making it look

1:23:36 > 1:23:47easy. Can Ziwei keep second.

1:23:47 > 1:23:49easy. Can Ziwei keep second.Roberts Zvejnieks nearly had them on the

1:23:49 > 1:23:53floor. He is doing everything he can. Knegt is staying out of

1:23:53 > 1:24:00trouble. They have three laps to go. Fauconnet is back into second. Ziwei

1:24:00 > 1:24:06on his tail. A gap to the Latvian who is just regrouping and I think

1:24:06 > 1:24:15may be we won't be seeing him again. They take the bell and Knegt was

1:24:15 > 1:24:24sent wide. Ziwei. Knegt from the Netherland in first ahead of Ziwei

1:24:24 > 1:24:30of China.All the skaters, I'm surprised at the level of

1:24:30 > 1:24:37uncertainty among the skaters, they're not dominating. Fauconnet

1:24:37 > 1:24:40likes to go to the front. They seemed to be so nervous and seemed

1:24:40 > 1:24:45to be holding back. How you tell the real uncertainty in a skater in a

1:24:45 > 1:24:48race like that? They're not taking the initiative of the race and

1:24:48 > 1:24:56taking the race to the others.

1:24:56 > 1:25:04taking the race to the others. Knegt is not fully committed.

1:25:04 > 1:25:15is not fully committed.Knegt forced very wide with a lap to go.

1:25:15 > 1:25:21very wide with a lap to go. It was touch as go as to whether they they

1:25:21 > 1:25:29were going to touch down. The China skater on his left shoulder. The

1:25:29 > 1:25:33referees will be having a look at that.Knegt, he is the big hope for

1:25:33 > 1:25:39the Dutch isn't he?Absolutely. He won three weeks ago. He won all

1:25:39 > 1:25:45three distances at the European Championships and the Europeans,

1:25:45 > 1:25:51there are four European leaders in the semi-finals.How mainstream is

1:25:51 > 1:25:55short track speed skating in the Netherland. Not all the viewers will

1:25:55 > 1:26:00know that you have lived there for 20 years. We know long track is a

1:26:00 > 1:26:06big thing. What about short track. What is the standing? It is growing

1:26:06 > 1:26:10in popularity and tonight the king of Holland is in the arena watching.

1:26:10 > 1:26:23He gets around. He was at the long track last night.

1:26:24 > 1:26:30And here we go once again they're having a look at the replay. There

1:26:30 > 1:26:35were one or two incidents to look at. Certainly he was involved. He

1:26:35 > 1:26:40certainly was. You can see the skaters all looking at the big

1:26:40 > 1:26:46screen, the big monitor in the centre of the rink here. We can see

1:26:46 > 1:26:50Wang with the Latvian skater. Didn't allow him enough space to go

1:26:50 > 1:26:56through. I would probably suspect that the Latvian would be...

1:26:56 > 1:27:07Receiving the penalty. At the moment, Knegt and Ren from China the

1:27:07 > 1:27:13two going through. That is the thing with these races, it is not a case

1:27:13 > 1:27:18of one incident they're looking at. Often there are two or three in the

1:27:18 > 1:27:28race. We have the skaters for the next heat warming up the presence of

1:27:28 > 1:27:39referee. They have reached a conclusion. A penalty to... Ziwei of

1:27:39 > 1:27:48China. Ziwei is penalised.

1:27:48 > 1:27:54China. Ziwei is penalised. So Fauconnet of France will go through

1:27:54 > 1:27:58and Zvejnieks advances as well, having been the victim of the

1:27:58 > 1:28:03illegal manoeuvre. That means there has been two advancements now. That

1:28:03 > 1:28:12is the second advancement.Hamlin from Canada on the inside, a

1:28:12 > 1:28:19three-time Olympic gold medallist. Lepape from France. Shulginov from

1:28:19 > 1:28:30Russia. He disappeared from the start before anyone was ready and

1:28:30 > 1:28:36Dajing, a two-time world champion nearest the camera. Away they go.

1:28:36 > 1:28:42Hamlin on the inside. Dajing was quickly trying to take this race by

1:28:42 > 1:28:51the scruff of the neck. Both there, Lepape moving around. Hamlin as

1:28:51 > 1:28:57well. Wu of China has got other ideas. Hamlin squeezes back into

1:28:57 > 1:29:04second. First and second to qualify. Dajing on the front for China. Six

1:29:04 > 1:29:14laps to go. Hamlin of Canada in second.

1:29:14 > 1:29:21second. Lepape. Tight squeeze with Lepape being forced out by Hamlin.

1:29:21 > 1:29:29Dajing still leads. Shulginov from Russia in third. Just a bit of a gap

1:29:29 > 1:29:40opening up. Lepape sneaks inside the Russian into third. Dajing and

1:29:40 > 1:29:46Hamlin look as if they're a class above the others. The Russian

1:29:46 > 1:29:50Shulginov is out of contention. They take the bell. They're on the last

1:29:50 > 1:29:57lap. Hamlin leads. Dajing is there. Lepape is having a look. They

1:29:57 > 1:30:06stretch for the line and lamb Hamlin and a photograph between Wu and

1:30:06 > 1:30:13Lepape.

1:30:13 > 1:30:19That would be a new Olympic record, if ratified. A quick sprint at the

1:30:19 > 1:30:23end with Hamelin of Canada taking it. We await confirmation from the

1:30:23 > 1:30:29photo finish to see who will join him going through.Absolutely, you

1:30:29 > 1:30:35can see on the front, Wu Dajing of China making it looked very easy.

1:30:35 > 1:30:39Hamelin making it through on the inside. Unusual for him to come

1:30:39 > 1:30:44through so late. But again, a new Olympic record with Sebastien Lepape

1:30:44 > 1:30:51trying to squeeze through.Wu Dajing has qualified in second. The Olympic

1:30:51 > 1:30:55record has been ratified. Despite the best efforts of Frenchman

1:30:55 > 1:30:57Sebastien Lepape, he couldn't force his way through despite a good

1:30:57 > 1:31:02effort on the last lap. Charles Hamelin and Wu Dajing both going

1:31:02 > 1:31:08through. And we have an Olympic record set in the process as well

1:31:08 > 1:31:11stop Josh Cheetham of Great Britain is still to come in these 1000 metre

1:31:11 > 1:31:24heats. A conveyor belt of heats.

1:31:28 > 1:31:41We have the 1000 metre world champion in this heat, Seo Yira.

1:31:41 > 1:31:58Tommaso Dotti from Italy in this as well as De Laat of benevolence. --

1:31:58 > 1:32:04of the Netherlands.

1:32:04 > 1:32:07of the Netherlands. Had to settle for eighth place in the 1500 metre

1:32:07 > 1:32:10final. There were nine skaters in that final with a real congested

1:32:10 > 1:32:20field. Seo Yira is one of the big local favourites, tucked in behind.

1:32:20 > 1:32:27De Laat was sixth in the 1500 metre at the weekend. Seo Yira it's the

1:32:27 > 1:32:35front with four laps to go.

1:32:35 > 1:32:37front with four laps to go.De Laat moves into second place with three

1:32:37 > 1:32:47laps to go.

1:32:49 > 1:32:54Stay to Masoe. He is scrambling and trying to keep in touch.Seo Yira

1:32:54 > 1:32:59has

1:33:00 > 1:33:06has some work to do without time to do it. Seo Yira, the 1000 metre

1:33:06 > 1:33:11world Jami, is knocked out at the first time of asking. It seems so

1:33:11 > 1:33:16strange that these top performers, year in and year out, and that these

1:33:16 > 1:33:20Olympic Games, they are not producing. That was an extraordinary

1:33:20 > 1:33:28finish. But Seo Yira, with more than a lap to go, finding himself at the

1:33:28 > 1:33:32back of the field suddenly. This was the manoeuvre. Even Tommaso Dotti of

1:33:32 > 1:33:39Italy was able to slide through on the inside of the Korean. Left the

1:33:39 > 1:33:44door open and paid the price. Absolutely. You can see the crowd

1:33:44 > 1:33:50looking at the action replay, as the Chinese skater went up the inside of

1:33:50 > 1:33:54Seo Yira. He didn't touch him, didn't close the door, so I would

1:33:54 > 1:34:00question whether or not Han Tianyu would make the next round. But it's

1:34:00 > 1:34:05down to the referee to make the final call. It's fair to say, the

1:34:05 > 1:34:12home crowd are open-mouthed at the prospect of Seo Yira not being in

1:34:12 > 1:34:16the competition. Waiting for official confirmation of the result.

1:34:16 > 1:34:23There is a penalty, we are hearing.

1:34:30 > 1:34:35So, Seo Yira is advance. I didn't need to tell you, you could work

1:34:35 > 1:34:44that out from the crowd reaction around the stadium.

1:34:44 > 1:34:50around the stadium. De Laat and Seo Yira go through. Tantanmen route is

1:34:50 > 1:34:59penalised. -- Han Tianyu is penalised.He is raising his hands

1:34:59 > 1:35:03as if to say, I didn't touch him. Healthy having a home skater into

1:35:03 > 1:35:07the next RAM. It would have been big news if he went out. In Heaton of

1:35:07 > 1:35:12the seven we have Josh Cheetham from Great Britain making an Olympic

1:35:12 > 1:35:18debut at the age of 25.

1:35:18 > 1:35:25debut at the age of 25. European bronze medallist in 2016. Up against

1:35:25 > 1:35:38Confortola of Italy, Bykanov of

1:35:40 > 1:35:55Israel and Hwang Daeheo of career. -- of Korea. Hwang Daeheo goes to

1:35:55 > 1:36:01the front for Korea. Confortola of Italy moving through on the outside

1:36:01 > 1:36:06to assume control at the front of the race. Josh Cheetham swinging off

1:36:06 > 1:36:11the back a little bit with four laps to go. It's Confortola of Italy

1:36:11 > 1:36:18leading from Hwang Daeheo of Korea. It'll be interesting to see what

1:36:18 > 1:36:23happens with a fight going on at the front for first and second place.

1:36:23 > 1:36:27Josh Cheetham is still close enough to take advantage if there are any

1:36:27 > 1:36:35problems further ahead of him. It's tight the front. Hwang Daeheo of

1:36:35 > 1:36:43Korea is leading

1:36:43 > 1:36:45Korea is leading the way with Bykanov of Israel in second. Josh

1:36:45 > 1:36:52Cheetham will not be able to close the gap.

1:36:52 > 1:36:56the gap.It will be interesting to see whether Bykanov of Israel

1:36:56 > 1:37:04doesn't receive a penalty on the challenge of Confortola. I looked

1:37:04 > 1:37:07down at the referee at the first bend when the collision took place

1:37:07 > 1:37:15and the referee made a little note. On his iPad. It'll be interesting to

1:37:15 > 1:37:20see, Bykanov got a penalty in the 1500 metre first round, and he might

1:37:20 > 1:37:25receive a penalty in this race as well. It will be interesting to see.

1:37:25 > 1:37:32There it is.Do you think Bykanov could be penalised on that move,

1:37:32 > 1:37:38after Tommaso Dotti?Possibly. You can feel when a skater is coming up

1:37:38 > 1:37:46on the inside. No doubt about the winner, Hwang Daeheo, the winner of

1:37:46 > 1:37:51the 2016 youth Olympic gold medal in the 1000 metres. Now on the biggest

1:37:51 > 1:37:55stage of all, the world number two at this distance this year. Josh

1:37:55 > 1:38:00Cheetham with his first taste of the Olympics. Stayed upright and got

1:38:00 > 1:38:07round.That's right, it was a very tough race.There is a penalty. And

1:38:07 > 1:38:14Bykanov is penalised. So Confortola of Italy goes through instead. And

1:38:14 > 1:38:22Josh Cheetham is credited with third place. The first two go through.

1:38:24 > 1:38:26place. The first two go through. So Bykanov, a real quality skater, goes

1:38:26 > 1:38:31out on the penalty. So this is the final heat, number eight in the 1000

1:38:31 > 1:38:44metres. The Olympic Athlete from Russia, 19 years of age.

1:39:01 > 1:39:11False start.

1:39:19 > 1:39:31You would expect Shaolin Liu to win this, and it was he who caused the

1:39:31 > 1:39:43false start. Away they go after the restart. Nine laps of the track.

1:39:44 > 1:39:51Pukitis at the back for Latvia. Skated very well in the 1500 metres.

1:39:51 > 1:39:55I expected to challenge early in this race. Sitnikov on the outside

1:39:55 > 1:40:03goes inside Shaolin Liu of Hungary. Looks like he could go up another

1:40:03 > 1:40:09gear or two. Suddenly, three of them on the deck. Shaolin Liu is the only

1:40:09 > 1:40:19one upright at this in time.

1:40:20 > 1:40:29Shaolin Liu has left the other three on the deck.I don't know if you

1:40:29 > 1:40:33remember the Olympic final in Salt Lake City, when all the skaters went

1:40:33 > 1:40:41down. The new rule now is that the referee can stop the race. He will

1:40:41 > 1:40:46go to the video replay and look who the culprit is. That person will

1:40:46 > 1:40:50receive a penalty and not be allowed to restart the race.Did you see

1:40:50 > 1:40:57anything that stood out to you?It looked very much like the Russians

1:40:57 > 1:41:02skater, he might be the one to receive the penalty

1:41:02 > 1:41:05skater, he might be the one to receive the penalty. Shaolin goes up

1:41:05 > 1:41:11the inside. From where I'm sitting, it's the Russian who is getting up

1:41:11 > 1:41:16off the ice. Even before the result has been announced coming is getting

1:41:16 > 1:41:29off the ice knowing he was wrong, smashed into JR Celski.Sitnikov, a

1:41:29 > 1:41:33bit like a player who doesn't wait for the referee to waive the red

1:41:33 > 1:41:39card in his face, already making his way off. We will have three skaters

1:41:39 > 1:41:43in the last heat. There was already a false start. Running repairs on

1:41:43 > 1:41:49the track. That's right. When JR Celski went down he bashed his

1:41:49 > 1:41:53skates. You can see the skates being repaired. I remember in Lily hammer

1:41:53 > 1:41:59when I broke my blade I was not allowed to change it. Here now, the

1:41:59 > 1:42:04rules and regulations have improved and got better. It looks like JR

1:42:04 > 1:42:08Celski is changing his blade.I don't want to bring up old wounds,

1:42:08 > 1:42:14but isn't that like to be asked to race with a flat tire? You could say

1:42:14 > 1:42:19that. You can see the Americans changing blades. There was a

1:42:19 > 1:42:25collision going into that.JR Celski, he seems like he's keeping

1:42:25 > 1:42:29his cool, very experienced American. Absolutely. They work with this in

1:42:29 > 1:42:35training. It's a bit like in Formula 1, they come into the pit and change

1:42:35 > 1:42:43their tyres. Here they are coming in and changing their blades. It would

1:42:43 > 1:42:46be the longest pit stop in Formula 1 history, he has been sat there for

1:42:46 > 1:43:01couple of minutes. JR Celski, eight time medallist.

1:43:04 > 1:43:12Shaolin Sandor Liu of Hungary, Elise Christie's boyfriend. Elise Christie

1:43:12 > 1:43:16spends time training with the Hungarian team in Budapest. It was

1:43:16 > 1:43:19interesting to see him in the heat box before the quarterfinal talking

1:43:19 > 1:43:28to the girls from Hungary. It almost feels like a part-time team-mate.

1:43:28 > 1:43:32The heat box? That's where the skaters prepare for the race before

1:43:32 > 1:43:40they physically go onto the ice.

1:43:40 > 1:43:46they physically go onto the ice. JR Celski, of course...Finishing

1:43:46 > 1:43:51repairs on the track. The pit stop for JR Celski continues on the far

1:43:51 > 1:43:55side of the track. A reminder that the semifinal involving Elise

1:43:55 > 1:43:59Christie in the women's 500 metres will be coming up in the not too

1:43:59 > 1:44:10distant here. So stick with us, because around ten minutes after

1:44:10 > 1:44:15midday, we will know who has won the women's 500 metre gold medal. But

1:44:15 > 1:44:19Elise Christie has to get there first. Away we go with just the

1:44:19 > 1:44:23three of them, we have lost Sitnikov, the Olympic Athlete from

1:44:23 > 1:44:26Russia, who knew he would be thrown out, he just walked off the ice

1:44:26 > 1:44:32straightaway. At the front, the Hungarian, Shaolin Sandor Liu, the

1:44:32 > 1:44:38World Cup number one. JR Celski of the USA and Pukitis of Latvia at the

1:44:38 > 1:44:42front.Now there are just three skaters in the race, it makes it

1:44:42 > 1:44:45very complicated. Only two of them will go through to the next round

1:44:45 > 1:44:50and all three of them are very evenly matched. It's not about who

1:44:50 > 1:44:56can make the race quickly, it's more of a tactical race. You can see how

1:44:56 > 1:45:00much slower they are going than the previous races. 10.64 in the

1:45:00 > 1:45:06previous lap. They look like skaters keeping their powder dry with

1:45:06 > 1:45:12Shaolin Sandor Liu leading the way with JR Celski in second and Pukitis

1:45:12 > 1:45:16in third. Pukitis is trying to move through on the inside with JR Celski

1:45:16 > 1:45:22getting squeezed out.

1:45:22 > 1:45:33Just three laps to go. It looks like these two might be going through.

1:45:33 > 1:45:37Sandor Liu looking good. They will take the bell and this time over the

1:45:37 > 1:45:45liner. Here it comes. One lap to go. And Liu leads. Staying at the front.

1:45:45 > 1:45:53And Pukitis is in second. And Sandor goes through and Pukitis in second

1:45:53 > 1:46:00and Celski couldn't find a way through.That is a very good skate

1:46:00 > 1:46:05by the Hungarian skater. Boyfriend of Elise Christie and Elise is sat

1:46:05 > 1:46:10in the corner watching that race. And preparing herself of course for

1:46:10 > 1:46:16the next up and coming semi-final. Elise Christie just limbering up.

1:46:16 > 1:46:24Doing a few squats a few stretches, saying as loose as poss kwlibl. --

1:46:24 > 1:46:30possible. I wonder what is going through her mind. Here are the

1:46:30 > 1:46:35highlights from that last heat which we finally saw reach a conclusion.

1:46:35 > 1:46:39The favourite of the four was the man who crossed the line in first

1:46:39 > 1:46:47place. But Pukitis has done well.He has.

1:46:50 > 1:46:59has.Next on the track will be the semi-finals of the women's 500

1:46:59 > 1:47:15metres. That will come at 12 minutes past the hour.

1:47:19 > 1:47:25Charles Hamlin is the quartest qualifier in the men's. Farrell

1:47:25 > 1:47:32Treacy has gone through as well for Britain. Christie in the second of

1:47:32 > 1:47:37the semi-finals. How long do we have to break before we go into the

1:47:37 > 1:47:42women's semi-finals. They're just resurfacing the ice.You would

1:47:42 > 1:47:49expect about 20 minutes before we come back to the next. They have in

1:47:49 > 1:47:54fact two breaks.

1:47:55 > 1:47:58fact two breaks.We have had the quarter-finals in the women's 500

1:47:58 > 1:48:04metre and the heats in the men's 1,000 metres. Farrell Treacy from

1:48:04 > 1:48:09Great Britain is through to the quarter-finals in the 1,000 metres.

1:48:09 > 1:48:15Josh Cheetham has gone out. Next out on to the ice the semi-finals of

1:48:15 > 1:48:21women's 500, including Britain's Elise Christie.

1:48:21 > 1:48:27STUDIO: Elise very calm. She has been warming up. Her coach Nicky

1:48:27 > 1:48:35Gooch, who has been to plenty of Olympics is on hand. She said to me

1:48:35 > 1:48:39she would come through social media. I think she is probably messaging

1:48:39 > 1:48:47her mum.Or playing a game.Playing a game or talking to her mum.She

1:48:47 > 1:48:54looks Coombe as a cucumber.She is fine. Just getting ready.Let's

1:48:54 > 1:48:55reflect on Farrell Treacy.

1:48:55 > 1:48:59fine. Just getting ready.Let's reflect on Farrell Treacy. You have

1:48:59 > 1:49:03to have a bit of luck. Farrell Treacy at the back here. Benefits

1:49:03 > 1:49:10from a crash that takes out the middle two skaters.I thought that

1:49:10 > 1:49:15would be his tactics. He is trying to stay out of trouble. He sat there

1:49:15 > 1:49:21and knew there would be moves and a couple of messy skaters and there

1:49:21 > 1:49:25would be a fall of some sort. He has taken advantage. If he had done all

1:49:25 > 1:49:30the work he would have been tired by the end. Not only did he qualify

1:49:30 > 1:49:33through nice and easy. He probably has saved his legs for the next

1:49:33 > 1:49:39round.And at his first Olympics he is into the last 16.A brilliant

1:49:39 > 1:49:44start for him and he gets at least one more race. So as much experience

1:49:44 > 1:49:50as possible. It is fair to say the man who inspired so much interest in

1:49:50 > 1:49:55short track speed skating is Wilf O'Riley. You heard him from the

1:49:55 > 1:50:00commentary box. Here is his story.

1:50:02 > 1:50:07I grew up with my mum alone. She played the roles of being the father

1:50:07 > 1:50:16and the mother. Mum bought me a pair of these in-line skates where the

1:50:16 > 1:50:22four wheels were in the front. My mother was helping me from one side

1:50:22 > 1:50:29of the living room at the other at her despair as the carpet slowly

1:50:29 > 1:50:33moved to one side. He said only skate one way and then it will move

1:50:33 > 1:50:41back. I was able to in-line skate from my house to the ice rink in

1:50:41 > 1:50:45about 15, 20 minutes, going down through the underpasses, the speeds

1:50:45 > 1:50:52and the bumps on the roads, gives a terrific feeling of freedom. It was

1:50:52 > 1:51:00a natural transition for me from in-line skating to ice. I started

1:51:00 > 1:51:10figure skating. I remember watching John Curry with my mother winning

1:51:10 > 1:51:18Olympic gold.He did not put a foot wrong.That was my first aspiration

1:51:18 > 1:51:25to even take up the sport. Somewhere I realised, I want ed to be that

1:51:25 > 1:51:32more competitive. The rough and

1:51:32 > 1:51:35more competitive. The rough and tum -- tumble if you like. Figure

1:51:35 > 1:51:41skating didn't give me the thrill. There was a very good speed skating

1:51:41 > 1:51:46club at Birmingham and they were called the Birmingham mow Hawkes,

1:51:46 > 1:51:53which now a proud honorary member. They had a time troo trial and you

1:51:53 > 1:51:59had to go three laps and do that under 40 seconds. I remember the

1:51:59 > 1:52:05starter calling me to the line, saying are you ready. I was shaking

1:52:05 > 1:52:13in my skates, not in my shoes. I made the time and that was my first

1:52:13 > 1:52:26time of joining the Birmingham club. That it is the dash. O'Reilly wide

1:52:26 > 1:52:31on the outside. After the first day when I won the 500 going to bed that

1:52:31 > 1:52:37evening and putting my medal under the cushion and waking up in the

1:52:37 > 1:52:42morning and making sure it was still there - I wasn't dreaming or it

1:52:42 > 1:52:49wasn't real. It was very real.No one can get near him. O'Reilly wins.

1:52:49 > 1:52:56Then I did it own. The second day. Can O'Reilly hold on? He has lost an

1:52:56 > 1:53:03edge. O'Reilly gets it. A second gold.Winning the 1,000 metres -

1:53:03 > 1:53:10that was amazing in itself. The sport's given me an incredible

1:53:10 > 1:53:15amount. I was this young lad living in Birmingham and this has happened

1:53:15 > 1:53:23to me. It can really happen to anybody. Now he is a fantastic

1:53:23 > 1:53:30commentator and been a huge inspiration, including your brother.

1:53:30 > 1:53:36He was the superstar of our sport when we were children. I remember my

1:53:36 > 1:53:40brother had fallen over and he must have been maybe six years old. He

1:53:40 > 1:53:49was crying. Wee scrap of a thing and Wilf scooped him up and told him to

1:53:49 > 1:54:04finish the race. He won the hearts of my parents. You have been an in

1:54:04 > 1:54:11spiration to others, notably Chemmy Alcott. She will try anything.I'm

1:54:11 > 1:54:17glad we are showing this.It is very graceful.Is it?You make it look

1:54:17 > 1:54:23difficult which is good. I think you improved.I am learning from the

1:54:23 > 1:54:31best. I was a bit close to your Derry air there. Sorry it is hard to

1:54:31 > 1:54:39keep the hints low. I can see why their legs get ruined. When I was in

1:54:39 > 1:54:47Seoul and all the kids were on the ice. Tiny kids.Incredible, tiny

1:54:47 > 1:54:52kids from four years old and they're in this low position. We would go

1:54:52 > 1:54:55for World Cups and see them skating and this is the sort of thing that

1:54:55 > 1:55:00we are trying to achieve. I'm trying to get into that position still.

1:55:00 > 1:55:06They're doing I it at such a young age.Wilf started as a figure

1:55:06 > 1:55:11skater, so did Elise Christie. She is now at her third Olympics and

1:55:11 > 1:55:22shortly she will be skating in the systemy final of the 500 metres. She

1:55:22 > 1:55:32gone diskwaled by the four years -- disqualified four years ago. As you

1:55:32 > 1:55:37can see, they have finished making all the preparations to the ice rink

1:55:37 > 1:55:45and I think certainly it is filling up. Huge atmosphere there. It seems

1:55:45 > 1:55:50to me Elise Christie rising to the occasion. But she has got to finish

1:55:50 > 1:55:55in the first two to get to the final. There are the skaters for the

1:55:55 > 1:55:58first of semis, let's rejoin Wilf and Simon.

1:55:58 > 1:56:04first of semis, let's rejoin Wilf and Simon. COMMENTATOR: Elise

1:56:04 > 1:56:11Christie gathering her thoughts. Real nerve-jangling moments now. And

1:56:11 > 1:56:17for everyone watching as well. So fast this event, it is over in three

1:56:17 > 1:56:22quarters of a minute. No room for errors. Any mistake and there is

1:56:22 > 1:56:26hardly any time to put it right. Here come the skaters for the first

1:56:26 > 1:56:36semi-final. Choi Minjeong No 6 from Korea. A multiple world champion.

1:56:36 > 1:56:49Fontana from Italy. Prosvirnova was impressive in the quarter-final. And

1:56:49 > 1:56:56Fan Kexin the world champion. There is Prosvirnova getting ready for

1:56:56 > 1:57:00this first semi-final.Choi has an ideal race. She was start on inner

1:57:00 > 1:57:14lane. The lanes behide it side it, the fastest time in their previous

1:57:14 > 1:57:19late allows them to line up.So Christie has the No 1 spot.

1:57:19 > 1:57:28Absolutely.The crowd excited at the presence of Choi Minjeong, but being

1:57:28 > 1:57:37asked to quiet endown for the start. Away they go. Four and a half laps

1:57:37 > 1:57:47and Fontana makes the best start. Five-time Olympic medallist leads.

1:57:47 > 1:57:57At the back Fan has a lot to do. But Fontana is putting the pressure on.

1:57:57 > 1:58:01Fontana and Choi Minjeong leading. And Fan has got ground to make up.

1:58:01 > 1:58:08Can she do it here? Fontana is being put under pressure by Choi Minjeong.

1:58:08 > 1:58:14They came to the line and Minjeong takes the front, Fontana in second.

1:58:14 > 1:58:23Fan is not going to make it into the final. Choi Minjeong looked strong

1:58:23 > 1:58:33and she won. Fontana is through to the final again and Fan finishing in

1:58:33 > 1:58:41third place. Prosvirnova from the Olympic Athlete from Russia is

1:58:41 > 1:58:52fourth.A surprising result. Fontana made it look easy. You see all sorts

1:58:52 > 1:58:58of problems. She slowed the race down and as soon as the collision

1:58:58 > 1:59:03happened there, with the Russian skater, taking Fan out completely, I

1:59:03 > 1:59:07would be surprised to see whether a penalty is awarded and she will be

1:59:07 > 1:59:13advanced.We await confirmation of the time it could be an Olympic

1:59:13 > 1:59:21record time. We saw the record go earlier on today. To Elise Christie

1:59:21 > 1:59:27with a 42.07. The record may have gone. Choi Minjeong first over the

1:59:27 > 1:59:34line. Fontana in second. Just waiting for the official

1:59:34 > 1:59:41confirmation of the result.

1:59:41 > 1:59:46Slight delay. These skaters for the second semifinal were waiting to

1:59:46 > 1:59:53start but they've been told to hang on for a moment. They are waiting

1:59:53 > 1:59:57for confirmation of that Olympic record time, and that there is an

1:59:57 > 2:00:02open tea, and it looks like there is a chance there might be. -- there is

2:00:02 > 2:00:06no penalty. Hopefully, the discussion will not last for long.

2:00:06 > 2:00:12It is a penalty.

2:00:13 > 2:00:15It is a penalty. Fan Kexin penalised, the world champion

2:00:15 > 2:00:18penalised, she didn't go through anyway and the Olympic record has

2:00:18 > 2:00:27gone. Choi Minjeong, 42.4 to two her time, she is in fantastic form.

2:00:27 > 2:00:38Now... Elise Christie, 4.5 laps to make it into the Olympic final and a

2:00:38 > 2:00:46chance to race for gold. Away they go and they are away first time and

2:00:46 > 2:00:50Christie second to that first corner. The Canadian, Kim Boutin

2:00:50 > 2:00:55taking it. Qu Chunyu in third place and Yara Van Kerkhof at the back.

2:00:55 > 2:01:02Christie closing the door as Qu Chunyu had a look but Boutin got out

2:01:02 > 2:01:05of the blocks quickly. Christie challenging on the inside. Forced

2:01:05 > 2:01:12wide. Qu Chunyu has gone down. Yara Van Kerkhof is at the front.

2:01:12 > 2:01:20Christie in second place at Van Kerkhof leads from Christie who is

2:01:20 > 2:01:25holding off the challenge, Boutin. Around the bend they come, up

2:01:25 > 2:01:30towards the line, Christie and Van Kerkhof in a photo for first place.

2:01:30 > 2:01:36Boutin I think that over the line. Well, amazing race! Elise had a

2:01:36 > 2:01:40little bit of a problem at the start allowing Boutin to get in front of

2:01:40 > 2:01:45her so it will be a decision for the referees to make. What will happen

2:01:45 > 2:01:53here? We can see it again. Boutin got a superb start, Christie

2:01:53 > 2:01:58stumbled through the first corner. Boutin was knocked off balance and,

2:01:58 > 2:02:04of course, if Christie is remaining in second place, if I was the

2:02:04 > 2:02:12referee here, I would clearly be penalising Boutin.So, number 67 on

2:02:12 > 2:02:19the deck, the 2016 world champion, Qu Chunyu, but you can see it is

2:02:19 > 2:02:24parents care staff and you can easily get caught up in it.

2:02:24 > 2:02:29Absolutely. And your chances of gold can go in an instant. There was the

2:02:29 > 2:02:33desperate luge for the line.Yara Van Kerkhof and Elise Christie

2:02:33 > 2:02:41stretching for it. Just waiting for official confirmation. Van Kerkhof

2:02:41 > 2:02:47marginally in front of the Christie. It is still a provisional result.

2:02:47 > 2:02:5543.19 the time. And you just never know with these video reviews, do

2:02:55 > 2:03:04you? It is a bit of an anxious wait. I think that Boutin will probably be

2:03:04 > 2:03:10the skater that gets the penalty. And it could be that the Chinese

2:03:10 > 2:03:17skater advances to the final.Or I is on to the scoreboard that hangs

2:03:17 > 2:03:25high in the centre of this impressive arena. -- all eyes on the

2:03:25 > 2:03:31scoreboard. We are almost ready for the decision. And we have a penalty.

2:03:31 > 2:03:39Qu Chunyu is penalised and will finish last. And Kim Boutin

2:03:39 > 2:03:43thoroughly delighted, she has advanced from third place into the

2:03:43 > 2:03:50final. Yara Van Kerkhof, Elise Christie and Kim Boutin all going

2:03:50 > 2:03:54through into the final. Here is the confirmation of the result from the

2:03:54 > 2:03:59second semifinal. Elise Christie gets the chance to race the gold.

2:03:59 > 2:04:02Two down, one to go.

2:04:10 > 2:04:15So, we will just have the ladies 500 metres semifinals, this is the

2:04:15 > 2:04:21line-up for the final, Choi Minjeong, who set a new Olympic

2:04:21 > 2:04:27record in that semifinal, Arianna Fontana, Yara Van Kerkhof, Elise

2:04:27 > 2:04:37Christie and Kim Boutin, they are the skaters going for gold. And in

2:04:37 > 2:04:43the B final, Sofia Prosvirnova. She will take the next placing. So,

2:04:43 > 2:04:47Christie going for gold later on.

2:04:47 > 2:04:55So, she will be drawn fourth of five?Yes, she's never going to win

2:04:55 > 2:04:59the start from blame four but she has proved she has a strong overtake

2:04:59 > 2:05:06but I think it will get messy. We all wanted it to happen easy but

2:05:06 > 2:05:11that is the truth!Just keep your heart rate high! Let's have a look

2:05:11 > 2:05:19at her semifinal. Bearing in mind Choi Minjeong and Arianna Fontana

2:05:19 > 2:05:23windproof in the first semifinal, Elise Christie, has start in this

2:05:23 > 2:05:27semifinal.She was a little slow off the line in this race. Not too bad

2:05:27 > 2:05:35but then she slept which killed her speed. She had to build back up and

2:05:35 > 2:05:39close the gap. She was under pressure because she knew the

2:05:39 > 2:05:40Chinese was behind her looking

2:05:40 > 2:05:41pressure because she knew the Chinese was behind her looking to

2:05:41 > 2:05:47take the second place. She flew through with loads of speed and,

2:05:47 > 2:05:52actually, Boutin close the door a little bit even though Elise was

2:05:52 > 2:05:58through, which I think caused the crash.Maybe that is why she looked

2:05:58 > 2:06:03so relieved afterwards.Yes, I thought she thought she was going to

2:06:03 > 2:06:09get disqualified. So, there will be five in the final.Elise Christie

2:06:09 > 2:06:12was clearly passed and not given the space. Then there was a pile-up

2:06:12 > 2:06:22kind.Is it better if

2:06:22 > 2:06:24kind.Is it better if -- there is more people in the final? Does she

2:06:24 > 2:06:29have a clearer run? If she doesn't get the lead, which I'm not

2:06:29 > 2:06:35convinced she will, then she's going to be one of those people scrapping

2:06:35 > 2:06:40for position. You can the slow motion what's because you can see

2:06:40 > 2:06:45the desperation of how much she wants it, the Golden Boots, only

2:06:45 > 2:06:46world champions allowed to

2:06:46 > 2:06:47wants it, the Golden Boots, only world champions allowed to wear the

2:06:47 > 2:06:50golden straps on their boots. And she is going to have to fight for

2:06:50 > 2:06:56it. She is going to have to be hugely confident under lucky.Yes,

2:06:56 > 2:07:00she has been thrown a curve ball, so we hope she's going to go through

2:07:00 > 2:07:05nicely. She does have great overtaking skills and great top

2:07:05 > 2:07:09speed so let's have a bit of faith. Let's have a look at two of her

2:07:09 > 2:07:15major dangers. Arianna Fontana, the skater she took out four years

2:07:15 > 2:07:15major dangers. Arianna Fontana, the skater she took out four years ago

2:07:15 > 2:07:19and got disqualified, and also on the inside Choi Minjeong, who was

2:07:19 > 2:07:24going to have the support of the home crowd.Yes, she will have the

2:07:24 > 2:07:28whole crowd behind her, so you have to pretend that cheering is for you.

2:07:28 > 2:07:36Arianna has a strong start, but not the same top speed as Elise so I

2:07:36 > 2:07:42think Arianna Fontana might lead the race, tired towards the end which is

2:07:42 > 2:07:47where the overtaking might happen. And you said Choi Minjeong is

2:07:47 > 2:07:52looking powerful, so her top speed is incredibly good.Yes, she went

2:07:52 > 2:07:57round the outside of Arianna in that last race and took a gap out on her

2:07:57 > 2:08:03and then Arianna Fontana did the work. That would make her more

2:08:03 > 2:08:09tired, and she was slipstreaming, so she did have an awful lot of speed

2:08:09 > 2:08:14at the end.So she is a little thread. Might give you a chance to

2:08:14 > 2:08:20send Elise a little text! It is going to be an incredibly exciting

2:08:20 > 2:08:21and tense final 4500

2:08:21 > 2:08:22going to be an incredibly exciting and tense final 4500 metres and

2:08:22 > 2:08:27it'll happen at around 12:10pm, and we will bring it to you live with

2:08:27 > 2:08:32all of the build-up, all of the reaction as well. Who knows what'll

2:08:32 > 2:08:36happen? In short-track speed skating nothing is guaranteed. In the

2:08:36 > 2:08:39women's halfpipe we had one of the hottest favourites for gold these

2:08:39 > 2:08:47Games. A teenager, from the USA representing the USA, both her

2:08:47 > 2:08:51parents are South Korean, David Habluetzel, so she had a load of

2:08:51 > 2:08:54attention, said she felt like Kim Kardashian. Everyone else was trying

2:08:54 > 2:09:07to keep up with Chloe Kim. Eddie Jones is the commentator.

2:09:07 > 2:09:13Such a relaxed rider, Liu Jiayu. She has been taking her cues from some

2:09:13 > 2:09:21of the most creative riders. She opens up with one of the hardest

2:09:21 > 2:09:24tricks, the switch method.This is a celebration of snowboarding. Get

2:09:24 > 2:09:31ready.

2:09:31 > 2:09:38Beautiful, nice height on the second hit. And there is the 900...She is

2:09:38 > 2:09:47so high! Here is the front ten... And she is gone! If she had landed

2:09:47 > 2:09:56that, we would have had a big game on our hands.Difficult and big and

2:09:56 > 2:10:00hard, and if you were to award standout trick of the day, that

2:10:00 > 2:10:12would be the switch method.89.75. Come on, Arielle Gold.

2:10:12 > 2:10:16Interestingly, her dad said to her when she first got into

2:10:16 > 2:10:20snowboarding, he said, look, most girls do things the way girls do

2:10:20 > 2:10:25things but you need to snowboard like the boys do, follow your

2:10:25 > 2:10:35brother, who is also a pro. That is an interesting comment... Yes!

2:10:35 > 2:10:41Absolutely huge 1080 to kick things off, switch seven, building up the

2:10:41 > 2:10:44speed, building the amplitude, then the crippler. She has lost some

2:10:44 > 2:10:54amplitude.She really has. Frontside nine... Huge McTwist, heave Ho at

2:10:54 > 2:11:01the bottom, her hands are in the air and is it enough?

2:11:01 > 2:11:18Lovely crab, lands high. 85!That is an 11 point shift, that is huge.

2:11:18 > 2:11:26Chloe Kim will be gifted the lap of honour. She tweeted this before she

2:11:26 > 2:11:32realised. She has tweeted, I wish I had finished my reckless to sandwich

2:11:32 > 2:11:39but my stubborn self decided not to and now I am getting h-angry.She is

2:11:39 > 2:11:45eating this pipe up for breakfast, though.Please do the back-to-backs.

2:11:45 > 2:11:53She's not holding back. She is going! Yes! Back-to-back tens. Big

2:11:53 > 2:11:59front line to the flat, had her legs turned on, there is the McTwist

2:11:59 > 2:12:10defying logic, and the final seven, your Olympic champion.While...

2:12:10 > 2:12:16While... Following the footsteps of Shaun White in Vancouver, landing

2:12:16 > 2:12:22back-to-back 1080s when she didn't need to. The composter when she was

2:12:22 > 2:12:32over the board, you need to know that you are landing that 1080.

2:12:33 > 2:12:3998.25! A phenomenal run from Chloe Kim. Look at that, look at what it

2:12:39 > 2:12:45means to her. It isn't just the Americans in the crowd. The South

2:12:45 > 2:12:51Koreans, who have claimed her as their own, now she has claimed gold

2:12:51 > 2:13:02for two nations. So, confirmation of the result. In

2:13:02 > 2:13:08bronze medal position, Arielle Gold. Just missing out, Kelly Clark.

2:13:08 > 2:13:14Silver, Liu Jiayu. In gold medal position, dominating the women's

2:13:14 > 2:13:22snowboard half-pipe, it is Chloe Kim.

2:13:22 > 2:13:30Chloe Kim!

2:13:33 > 2:13:39Well done. How are you feeling? How you feeling with the support here?

2:13:39 > 2:13:44Someone just hooked me up with some ice cream so I am down with that.

2:13:44 > 2:13:49You tweeted you are h-angry earlier on, did it help that final pipe run?

2:13:49 > 2:13:54You know, I was getting very h-angry and just not stoked because my

2:13:54 > 2:14:00stomach was rumbling and I had to be like I should hold it because I'm

2:14:00 > 2:14:07going to get drug tested but I had to do it. But, you know, I think I

2:14:07 > 2:14:10transferred all that anger from having an empty stomach into my

2:14:10 > 2:14:13third run and it worked.Massive congratulations.

2:14:17 > 2:14:22STUDIO: I had a gold medal, I will talk about too much information, and

2:14:22 > 2:14:30by 19 days, Chloe Kim is the youngest person to win a gold-medal

2:14:30 > 2:14:36on the snow. Her father later said when I came to the United States,

2:14:36 > 2:14:42this was my American hope. Now this is my American dream.Amazing and

2:14:42 > 2:14:46female riding needed that because we saw the slopestyle, they needed to

2:14:46 > 2:14:52back off because of the conditions. Chloe Kim didn't back off. She

2:14:52 > 2:14:57showed everyone what the sport of snowboarding is right now, how

2:14:57 > 2:15:01progressive and amazing it is. In that interview, so raw and young.I

2:15:01 > 2:15:07love that, h-angry and angry, hungry because you are angry. When you are

2:15:07 > 2:15:13a teenager... You only think about food and when to go to the loo! I

2:15:13 > 2:15:18love the fact she says all of that in her interview. Well done, she was

2:15:18 > 2:15:22sensational. On the Red Button at the moment, if you want to watch an

2:15:22 > 2:15:26alternative to the short-track speed skating, if you can't take the

2:15:26 > 2:15:29pressure of the short-track, it is the gold-medal match in the mixed

2:15:29 > 2:15:37doubles and it is Canada and Switzerland, 2-2.

2:15:39 > 2:15:43I like the mixed doubles, the way they shout at each other.

2:15:43 > 2:15:48Especially when they are married! What can we expect, how should we

2:15:48 > 2:15:56cope? I'm not sure. She knows Elise too

2:15:56 > 2:15:59well. She has lain four which is an ideal

2:15:59 > 2:16:05but you don't know how the race will go. She has such good speed, you had

2:16:05 > 2:16:10to stay calm with her and trust her to do her thing.

2:16:10 > 2:16:18To settle down, we will see the 5000 B2 relay heats for the men. To warm

2:16:18 > 2:16:24ourselves up into it. I don't know how relaxed.

2:16:24 > 2:16:30We don't have a British team in?We didn't have a strong enough

2:16:30 > 2:16:36selection to make up a team. There is no baton change, the

2:16:36 > 2:16:42changeover is done by your team-mate coming in, in front of you, and you

2:16:42 > 2:16:48have to push them to give them the speed. Four already on the track and

2:16:48 > 2:16:53four have to get in front of their skaters, it can get messy.

2:16:53 > 2:16:54We can enjoy this and

2:16:58 > 2:17:04loads of people will be tuning in to Elise Christie's final but you want

2:17:04 > 2:17:07to understand short track and who belted to explain than Wilf

2:17:07 > 2:17:18O'Reilly. It can get messy out there. It can.

2:17:18 > 2:17:24These 5000 metre relayed. In the first semifinal, Kazakhstan,

2:17:24 > 2:17:34Netherlands, Canada and China. China on the front, with Woo. Girard for

2:17:34 > 2:17:39Canada at the front.

2:17:47 > 2:17:51Kadlec starred in the blue, Kazakhstan going down. A gap opening

2:17:51 > 2:17:57back to the Netherlands. The Kazakhstan have lost a little

2:17:57 > 2:18:07ground.45 laps of this 111 metre track, still 40 laps to go. No built

2:18:07 > 2:18:11danger even though the Kazakhstan team went down. Canada likes to lead

2:18:11 > 2:18:24this from the front.Cournoyer there. He has Wu behind him. What is

2:18:24 > 2:18:29the usual of time a skater will be active in the race, how long is a

2:18:29 > 2:18:33turn? Normally 1.5 laps, they exchange to

2:18:33 > 2:18:39the next skater, the last two have to be completed by the same skater.

2:18:39 > 2:18:45It is not compulsory to use 1.5 laps, quite often teams will do

2:18:45 > 2:18:52another two then back. Will they always take it in turns?

2:18:52 > 2:18:55If you have a weaker skater, will they miss a turn?

2:18:55 > 2:19:02Absolutely.Change as often as you like, everyone has to be involved

2:19:02 > 2:19:07for at least one lap at some point but there are no changeovers in the

2:19:07 > 2:19:17final two laps. A version of the Madison in cycling.

2:19:25 > 2:19:30Do they have to change over in a certain manner?

2:19:30 > 2:19:35Imagine, connecting around the outside, going to the front of the

2:19:35 > 2:19:43race. The Netherlands still in second place.De Laat, not one of

2:19:43 > 2:19:48the biggest names in the squad, has very good form, he has performed

2:19:48 > 2:19:55credibly in these Games. Canada at the front with Cournoyer leading the

2:19:55 > 2:20:05way. Behind him, the Chinese team. The Netherlands in third. Breeuwsma

2:20:05 > 2:20:10who we saw in the 1000m heats, for the Dutch. Who will be the overall

2:20:10 > 2:20:15favourites? The Dutch team have won the wild

2:20:15 > 2:20:22championships last year. These skaters on the ice, they will be the

2:20:22 > 2:20:26four finishing skaters that complete two laps.

2:20:26 > 2:20:32The Netherlands challenging, not much room. Almost colliding with one

2:20:32 > 2:20:38of the Chinese skaters. China on the front, Canada second. Ren leading

2:20:38 > 2:20:43the China.

2:20:43 > 2:20:49the China. In second place, Canada in the shape of Cournoyer.

2:20:49 > 2:21:02Kazakhstan in third. The changeover now.

2:21:04 > 2:21:10The last 20 laps. The skaters coming in on the inside, changing, trying

2:21:10 > 2:21:15to stay as smooth as possible, it is about weight transfer, you don't

2:21:15 > 2:21:21want to lose speed during the transfer. As the skaters, round, and

2:21:21 > 2:21:24push the skaters through. It's a wonder they stay upright as

2:21:24 > 2:21:33often as they do. It is so congested. At the moment, Ren at the

2:21:33 > 2:21:39front, Dion for Canada. On the outside, China leading from Canada.

2:21:39 > 2:21:45The Dutch bringing up the rear at the moment. Not finding it easy.

2:21:45 > 2:21:57Finding their way through the traffic. The Dutch in third place.

2:21:58 > 2:22:07Girard is there, in second place. As the gap has been closed by the

2:22:07 > 2:22:14Dutch at the back... There is a fall, Kazakhstan have gone down.

2:22:14 > 2:22:19China, Canada and the Netherlands on the track. China have Ren leading

2:22:19 > 2:22:25the way from Canada. The Dutch have caught back, in third. On the

2:22:25 > 2:22:31coat-tails of the others. Racing for the Netherlands is Visser.

2:22:31 > 2:22:38Struggling in third place. We hope the concept on team stay wide on the

2:22:38 > 2:22:45track. -- the Kazakhstan team. Kazakhstan are back up and running

2:22:45 > 2:22:49but out of contention in this semifinal, with eight laps to go.

2:22:49 > 2:22:59Girard in second place. Hannant of China. The Dutch on the back. Han of

2:22:59 > 2:23:02China. The Dutch have not been able to assert any authority on this

2:23:02 > 2:23:09race. The Canadians in second look

2:23:09 > 2:23:15comfortable, with five

2:23:15 > 2:23:18comfortable, with five laps. So congested on the track. China

2:23:18 > 2:23:30need from Canada. With Xu. Just avoiding the change over was Hamelin

2:23:30 > 2:23:40of Canada. Looking to make the change. Girard into the race. Next

2:23:40 > 2:23:53time, one lap to go. On the front, it is Han.

2:23:53 > 2:23:59it is Han. As they crossed the line. But at the expense of the Canadian

2:23:59 > 2:24:08being deposited into the cushioning. Girard.

2:24:08 > 2:24:10Girard. Connect Magra did whatever he could to make sure he got

2:24:10 > 2:24:24through. Knegt.Clearly, China have qualified. What exactly happened

2:24:24 > 2:24:29between the Netherlands and the Canadian team, that will have to be

2:24:29 > 2:24:35decided by the referee looking at the video replay.Lots of bumping

2:24:35 > 2:24:45and barging. That was earlier. He did well to stay up on his skates.

2:24:50 > 2:25:01An element of wacky races out that at times! Here is the instant with

2:25:01 > 2:25:04Knegt and Girard. I am a little biased but there is a

2:25:04 > 2:25:13lot of room when Knegt comes through, he is not on the inside.

2:25:13 > 2:25:16Unfortunately a collision, arms in the air. There was enough room. If

2:25:16 > 2:25:25the referee sees it that way... We will have to wait and see.Girard

2:25:25 > 2:25:31colliding with the side of the track.

2:25:31 > 2:25:35track. Han clearly first over, China definitely through to the medal

2:25:35 > 2:25:42race. The Dutch will be nervous, hoping they get through. Canada

2:25:42 > 2:25:46feeling disgruntled their efforts came to a premature end, yards from

2:25:46 > 2:25:51the line.

2:25:51 > 2:25:54the line. Watering the ice. No surprise to see the judge is looking

2:25:54 > 2:26:07at that. Knegt with his right skates... Clearly there was a gap,

2:26:07 > 2:26:13and I am a little bit biased. We will have to leave these decisions

2:26:13 > 2:26:19to the chief referee. Do you think the Dutch might be in

2:26:19 > 2:26:23trouble? They could very well be.Peter,

2:26:23 > 2:26:32having a look at that one. Here it is once again. Knegt closing in, he

2:26:32 > 2:26:37saw the gap, did he take Girard out.

2:26:41 > 2:26:45It did rather looked that way. Still waiting for the official

2:26:45 > 2:26:54result. Canada all staying in the arena hoping there is a reprieve, a

2:26:54 > 2:26:58penalty which means they would go through. And yes, the Netherlands

2:26:58 > 2:27:07had been penalised. Knegt fouling Girard coming through on the inside,

2:27:07 > 2:27:13catching him with his skates as he came past. China and Canada qualify.

2:27:13 > 2:27:20A new Olympic record time is confirmed for China.

2:27:20 > 2:27:25confirmed for China. Kazakhstan are in the other final. Only eight

2:27:25 > 2:27:31teams. Everyone gets to race twice, not on the same day. These

2:27:31 > 2:27:35semifinals are to decide who goes through to compete for the medals,

2:27:35 > 2:27:42and for placings. A big blow to the Dutch. It did look

2:27:42 > 2:27:48a fairly straightforward decision. Welcome to short track at the match

2:27:48 > 2:27:51Mark thrills and spills all the way through. We get ready for this

2:27:51 > 2:27:57second semifinal.

2:27:58 > 2:28:05second semifinal. The Republic of Korea.

2:28:05 > 2:28:13Korea. And Hungary, a very good line-up, very productive, they have

2:28:13 > 2:28:23a good, strong line-up.

2:28:25 > 2:28:31Japan, and the United States.

2:28:38 > 2:28:4545 no doubt incident packed laps ahead of us here.

2:28:45 > 2:28:50As the Dutch continue to die jest that last lap in the previous

2:28:50 > 2:28:52semifinal.

2:28:53 > 2:28:59Here we go. -- digests. Sprinting as if it was a

2:28:59 > 2:29:05two lap race X Knysh Mark Hungary are on the front, the red shoulders

2:29:05 > 2:29:14on their jerseys. The Hungarian national colours.

2:29:14 > 2:29:16The Hungarian national colours. The red dot of Japan on the back of

2:29:16 > 2:29:23their skin suits.

2:29:23 > 2:29:26their skin suits. Kruger for the United States. As they make the

2:29:26 > 2:29:36first change. Knock for Hungary who lead.

2:29:39 > 2:29:44Korea have gone from first gear to third and the crowd is like turning

2:29:44 > 2:29:49on a switch. It certainly is and there are still 40 laps to go. They

2:29:49 > 2:29:54have seen who is in the final now from the previous semifinal, they

2:29:54 > 2:30:08want to stay out of trouble, and the front place is the best place to be.

2:30:09 > 2:30:16Everyone manages to negotiate the changeover. A real combination of

2:30:16 > 2:30:21stamina, speed and skill technical skill, on the ice, bringing the

2:30:21 > 2:30:26elements of short-track speed skating here.Note the skaters on

2:30:26 > 2:30:31the inside of the track are confidently following the skaters on

2:30:31 > 2:30:34the track because if there is a fool they have to touch the other skaters

2:30:34 > 2:30:41so you can imagine they have a button they have to hand over in

2:30:41 > 2:30:48track and field, here there has to be physical contact.Korea still

2:30:48 > 2:31:00lead, hungry, two, USA, three, Japan four with 22 laps... 32 laps to go.

2:31:00 > 2:31:07There is an official helpfully standing in front of the lap board.

2:31:07 > 2:31:12That is handy! The USA moving around the outside showing their faces out

2:31:12 > 2:31:20front for the first time. It was Krueger who made that move. Tran on

2:31:20 > 2:31:32the front, Knoch, three, still tightly packed. 28 laps to go.

2:31:32 > 2:31:37America tucked into second place, a surprisingly world-record for them

2:31:37 > 2:31:41after their World Cup number three this year in Shanghai. They haven't

2:31:41 > 2:31:49really produced a lot of good results this season but in the

2:31:49 > 2:31:52Shanghai World Cup this season, they did in fact escaped that world

2:31:52 > 2:32:00record.Hungary still leading, 25 laps remaining in this 5,000 metre

2:32:00 > 2:32:09men's relay semifinal. Viktor Knoch in second place, United States

2:32:09 > 2:32:14getting more active in the last few laps and currently on the front. We

2:32:14 > 2:32:21have seen a couple of good times from Tran. The USA trying to come

2:32:21 > 2:32:28through on the inside with Celski. You might end up getting overtaken

2:32:28 > 2:32:32by Korea who are right there with him but the USA hold the

2:32:32 > 2:32:40second-place spot, hungry out in front with Shaolin Liu.Hungry

2:32:40 > 2:32:47making this look very easy at the moment. They were disappointing at

2:32:47 > 2:32:52the European Championships, but have they got it right here? They look

2:32:52 > 2:32:59composed and unruffled, Hungary. Very comfortable indeed.

2:33:00 > 2:33:02Very comfortable indeed. Knoch, chased down by the United States.

2:33:02 > 2:33:06The crowd are wondering when Korea will start to hit the front. They

2:33:06 > 2:33:12brought every time their team get anywhere near position one on the

2:33:12 > 2:33:20ice, currently in second place. Hungary from Korea. 15 laps to go.

2:33:20 > 2:33:31In action for Korea is Kim Dokyoum. Shaolin Liu in the front for

2:33:31 > 2:33:35Hungary. They've maintained that first place position for quite

2:33:35 > 2:33:40awhile. Are the Koreans biding their time here? Haven't seen too from

2:33:40 > 2:33:55Japan.I would be expecting the Koreans, in second place... He is

2:33:55 > 2:34:02taking the acceleration out the outside. Now they go into the lead.

2:34:02 > 2:34:10Ten laps to go and Korea hit the button. Suddenly Hungary are looking

2:34:10 > 2:34:16ruffled, hassled. Shaolin Liu throw into the race and it looks as if

2:34:16 > 2:34:20Korea were keeping their powder dry until the final stages of this

2:34:20 > 2:34:28semifinal. Korea now leading, hungry and second, Japan three in a battle

2:34:28 > 2:34:34with USA.Seven laps to go. And, of course, first and second qualify so

2:34:34 > 2:34:37Hungary are happy to sit there to try and follow the Korean team, they

2:34:37 > 2:34:43don't need to win, they need to finish first or second. Japan are

2:34:43 > 2:34:51closing rapidly.Hungary and second, Japan working hard, the USA getting

2:34:51 > 2:34:54distanced, there are not in contention but Japan have not given

2:34:54 > 2:35:05up the chase. It is hungry in second place. Just trailing Korea. Three

2:35:05 > 2:35:12laps to go, 2.5 laps to go it is Korea and Hungary leading the way.

2:35:12 > 2:35:18USA in third place but the home crowd are getting excited now. Korea

2:35:18 > 2:35:22at the moment are heading into the Olympic final and looking to bring

2:35:22 > 2:35:28it home for them is Lim Hyojun. He is being chased by Shaolin Liu.

2:35:28 > 2:35:37Korea take it from Hungary. Those two take it to the final. Both Japan

2:35:37 > 2:35:40and the United States at various points tried to get involved in the

2:35:40 > 2:35:47front of the races but it was Hungary and ultimately Korea who won

2:35:47 > 2:35:50the day, safely through to the final. They will go for the medals

2:35:50 > 2:35:55tomorrow. It was impressive that when they put the pedal to the floor

2:35:55 > 2:36:01they really did.It did and Hungary are very happy. So, there we are,

2:36:01 > 2:36:06the hosts Korea are through to the final along with Hungary.

2:36:06 > 2:36:14STUDIO: That crowd will be getting very excited because they will be

2:36:14 > 2:36:22getting cited for the vinyl of the women and Elise Christie also has an

2:36:22 > 2:36:24opportunity to win her first Olympic medal...

2:36:46 > 2:36:51Elise Christie needs to make a clean start. Elise Christie out of the

2:36:51 > 2:37:01gate quickly. She still leads. Christie wins it.And there she is,

2:37:01 > 2:37:05going through the motions, warming up with her coach keeping her calm.

2:37:05 > 2:37:09She is she's going to have to risk it all, she is prepared for that,

2:37:09 > 2:37:13despite what happened four years ago to the day when she was disqualified

2:37:13 > 2:37:17in the final of the 500 metres in Sochi. Let's tell her story in more

2:37:17 > 2:37:25detail. I knew I was capable of medalling,

2:37:25 > 2:37:32skating the best I'd ever skated. Arianna Fontana overhauled by

2:37:32 > 2:37:38Christy, they've gone down.I had the speed so I moved up.

2:37:38 > 2:37:41Unfortunately, the girl hit me off my feet which meant I hit everyone

2:37:41 > 2:37:53else as I went down. Here comes Fontana, Christie takes it from

2:37:53 > 2:37:57Fontana.She's been penalised again. I'm gobsmacked, don't have a clue

2:37:57 > 2:38:04what happened. Here comes Christie. The Chinese skater challengers her,

2:38:04 > 2:38:11and she falls and takes Christie out again.

2:38:14 > 2:38:17I have had a few people threateningly and stuff. Cyber

2:38:17 > 2:38:24bullying, basically.What is it like to get a death threat?When it

2:38:24 > 2:38:28happens to you, you believe that person and those people are

2:38:28 > 2:38:32genuinely threatening your life. So it becomes very scary and I spent

2:38:32 > 2:38:38about six months after feeling scared of being in my house on my

2:38:38 > 2:38:44own or going out on my own just because so many at once made it feel

2:38:44 > 2:38:49so real. For me at the time, it was such a big loss. It was the thing

2:38:49 > 2:38:54that I'd dedicated everything too. I'd worked ridiculously hard for it.

2:38:54 > 2:39:00There's nothing anyone could do. I was just so scared and alone. As

2:39:00 > 2:39:07parents, you'd want them to cope. The bubble around the team and the

2:39:07 > 2:39:10bubble around the child, the athlete, it is difficult for a

2:39:10 > 2:39:14parent because you don't have very much access to your child at all.

2:39:14 > 2:39:19From a point where you are thinking I don't want to do this any more to

2:39:19 > 2:39:23becoming the world champion, that is some turnaround, isn't it?I think,

2:39:23 > 2:39:30just, the first one was the biggest deal.Christie leading the charge,

2:39:30 > 2:39:36it is going to be tight, she's done it! She is the world champion, Elise

2:39:36 > 2:39:41Christie!I remember screaming, and I never act like that.

2:39:45 > 2:39:51My emotions stay in the box. So for me to scream like that was just

2:39:51 > 2:39:57incredible. When I got crowned overall world champion, that was

2:39:57 > 2:40:03really when I couldn't take it in any more. I couldn't believe it. It

2:40:03 > 2:40:09is the biggest achievement in short-track to be crowned overall

2:40:09 > 2:40:12world champion, bigger than the Olympics, the biggest thing you can

2:40:12 > 2:40:18do. So it was an incredible season. Yes, I think... It was a great time,

2:40:18 > 2:40:25you know?You are obviously very emotional thinking about it.Yeah, I

2:40:25 > 2:40:32think... You are on the journey with them, and on a daily basis you are

2:40:32 > 2:40:36investing that emotion so I think when she achieves, then that means a

2:40:36 > 2:40:43lot to me as well.Where are your medals? They will be put on display,

2:40:43 > 2:40:47I have to figure out which way I want to do it yet. Boxed ones are

2:40:47 > 2:40:55all championship. What would she be like if she won the Olympic gold?

2:40:55 > 2:40:57Yeah, I think...

2:41:01 > 2:41:10Yeah, I don't know.When she was a little girl, it's something hadn't

2:41:10 > 2:41:12gone the whole way, she'd throw her skate in the cupboard and shoe was

2:41:12 > 2:41:16never going to do it again. Now we know how much it means to her and

2:41:16 > 2:41:20how much it means to the team and we are excited and hoping she will

2:41:20 > 2:41:25achieve her dream. Is there room for an Olympic one? Three beaks-mac is

2:41:25 > 2:41:30here. The tree is not to go out and sit in second place and pick up a

2:41:30 > 2:41:36medal. The dream is to go out and win the gold. That might mean we

2:41:36 > 2:41:40replicate Sochi but I'm not scared. I'm not scared of doing that in

2:41:40 > 2:41:45terms of how hard I've worked, I feel like I deserved to go out and

2:41:45 > 2:41:49to win, no matter what anyone else is going to say about it.

2:41:49 > 2:41:52to win, no matter what anyone else is going to say about it.

2:41:52 > 2:41:58So much has gone into these moment, not just for herself, but from her

2:41:58 > 2:42:04parents, her mum, Angela, who is out there. She's very close to her mum,

2:42:04 > 2:42:09and she always supports her. Every competition, she's there. In

2:42:09 > 2:42:13Vancouver, we spent some time together, so her and her mum are

2:42:13 > 2:42:18very close and she uses her as a real confidant.Well, she has passed

2:42:18 > 2:42:22through every step so far, jumped every hurdle and now it is time for

2:42:22 > 2:42:26the final and this is how Elise Christie has got there.

2:42:26 > 2:42:29the final and this is how Elise Christie has got there.Away they go

2:42:29 > 2:42:35first time in the race to the opening corner and it is taken by

2:42:35 > 2:42:46Boutin.Christie in second place. Christine now, smart move sliding in

2:42:46 > 2:42:52on the inside, takes the advantage over Boutin, they are the favourites

2:42:52 > 2:42:56to go through, they should be the class of the field and this is what

2:42:56 > 2:43:02it looks like. This will be interesting to see, the time that

2:43:02 > 2:43:06Elise Christie posts here. They are on the last lap, at the moment she

2:43:06 > 2:43:12is going through, Boutin is behind her, here comes Christie, up towards

2:43:12 > 2:43:17the line! Elise Christie takes it, Boutin slides over the line on her

2:43:17 > 2:43:19backside but Elise Christie has successfully negotiated the first

2:43:19 > 2:43:25hurdle of the day.

2:43:25 > 2:43:29hurdle of the day. 4.5 laps to make it into the Olympic final and a

2:43:29 > 2:43:37chance to race for gold. Away they go and they are away first time and

2:43:37 > 2:43:43Christie, second to the first corner, Boutin of Canada are taking

2:43:43 > 2:43:47it. Qu Chunyu in third place, Yara Van Kerkhof at the back. Christie

2:43:47 > 2:43:55closing the door as Qu Chunyu had a look. Kim Boutin got out of the

2:43:55 > 2:44:00blocks quickly and Christie challenging on the inside, goes to

2:44:00 > 2:44:04the front, forced wide, Qu Chunyu goes down and Yara Van Kerkhof is at

2:44:04 > 2:44:09the front. Christie in second place but Yara Van Kerkhof leads from

2:44:09 > 2:44:14Christie. Christie holding off the challenge of Boutin in third. Around

2:44:14 > 2:44:19the bend they come, up towards the line... Christie and Van Kerkhof in

2:44:19 > 2:44:22a photo for first place. Boutin third over the

2:44:22 > 2:44:26a photo for first place. Boutin third over the line. So, no pressure

2:44:26 > 2:44:30in the quarterfinal but the semifinal was tense. There will be

2:44:30 > 2:44:33five skaters of the 500 metres and for the first time Elise Christie

2:44:33 > 2:44:37will not be on the inside lane, she will be drawn four. What does she

2:44:37 > 2:44:42need to do and how much can you plan your tactics? It puts her at a

2:44:42 > 2:44:45disadvantage being on the outside because it is a shorter track to get

2:44:45 > 2:44:50the first block, the closer you are to the inside. That goes against

2:44:50 > 2:44:55her. She is still fast off the start so hopefully she will get into

2:44:55 > 2:45:01second or third. And she has a great top speed, and she has the skills to

2:45:01 > 2:45:05overtake. There will be so much going on, it is impossible to

2:45:05 > 2:45:09predict. Nobody will sit there and settle, it'll get interesting.You

2:45:09 > 2:45:14are part of the British team setup the nearly 20 years. Can you explain

2:45:14 > 2:45:24to people tuning in for the first time, what makes a great skater?

2:45:24 > 2:45:30A little bit crazy. You have to enjoy the feeling of speed. It helps

2:45:30 > 2:45:34to be athletic. The technical side of things is huge, I don't think

2:45:34 > 2:45:40anyone can be a natural. Getting in young enough, skating at an early

2:45:40 > 2:45:42age is crucial which Elise obviously did.

2:45:42 > 2:45:47You know from your expense of skiing downhill, you have to love your

2:45:47 > 2:45:55sport and, edition -- Experience. Especially overcoming the adversity

2:45:55 > 2:45:58from four years ago. She does it because she loves it and not to

2:45:58 > 2:46:04prove a point. You can only do this risky sport if you love every

2:46:04 > 2:46:10minute.It is a roller-coaster. She is emotionally invested. So is

2:46:10 > 2:46:19her coach. Nicky Gooch is the only man to have had the name in the

2:46:19 > 2:46:26record books, he took bronze in 1994. He is guiding her through.

2:46:26 > 2:46:31Every step of the way from when she started at 16.You have a very close

2:46:31 > 2:46:37relationship. Almost brother- Sister relationship.

2:46:37 > 2:46:43I was watching them prepare before they left. In between skates, they

2:46:43 > 2:46:48were teasing each other, throwing blocks at each other, but they are

2:46:48 > 2:46:53very good friends as well. And that matters. Elise will want to

2:46:53 > 2:46:58do it for Nikki, for her mum, for everyone watching because she knows

2:46:58 > 2:47:04this is the big stage as far as public attention is concerned. Wilf

2:47:04 > 2:47:07O'Reilly is the one who got Britain interested in short track speed

2:47:07 > 2:47:15skating. Wilf O'Reilly is here from the

2:47:15 > 2:47:18commentary box. In that last semifinal, Elise under pressure but

2:47:18 > 2:47:23looking good. She had a slight slip on the first

2:47:23 > 2:47:32corner. I think she panicked a little bit. Boutin skated away,

2:47:32 > 2:47:39Elise cruised along smoothly behind her. Yes, the Chinese girl skated

2:47:39 > 2:47:45right the way through. Boutin. Everyone was everywhere. The Dutch

2:47:45 > 2:47:49girl had the benefit of everyone being knocked over almost.

2:47:49 > 2:47:55Into the final, no world champion but we do have Choi Minjeong. And

2:47:55 > 2:48:03Fontana. Elise took Fontana out in Sochi.

2:48:03 > 2:48:11Five people in that final.Elise has only ever had in every round in the

2:48:11 > 2:48:15number one start date. Because of the collision, and she finished

2:48:15 > 2:48:20behind the Dutch girl, she will have the fourth start position. Joyce

2:48:20 > 2:48:30will have number one. Then Fontana. On the outside, Boutin will be

2:48:30 > 2:48:36number five. She has such a good start. We have to pray she doesn't

2:48:36 > 2:48:41get squashed in. Boutin comes across the line very quick from the start

2:48:41 > 2:48:47and you can get boxed in between number three and number five. It is

2:48:47 > 2:48:53important she stays relaxed. She has so much speed. It is a spent, but

2:48:53 > 2:49:00you have 4.5 laps. She doesn't need to panic. And doesn't need to take

2:49:00 > 2:49:07unnecessary risks. If she gets her medal and I am confident she will,

2:49:07 > 2:49:11then she can build on that, gain confidence, move on to the next

2:49:11 > 2:49:20distance. Wilf O'Reilly, thank you. We will be

2:49:20 > 2:49:25hearing more shortly. Putting it in context, with the

2:49:25 > 2:49:31times she was posting, are you thinking any medal is good news?

2:49:31 > 2:49:39It will always good -- be good news for the sport. For Elise, if she

2:49:39 > 2:49:44gets a medal, she knows she has two more. As long as she skates her

2:49:44 > 2:49:49best, she knows she has plenty in the tank. She will take that

2:49:49 > 2:49:55confidence on. I hope she doesn't make mistakes. If she is not at her

2:49:55 > 2:49:59best she will be disappointed and I don't want that to affect her

2:49:59 > 2:50:03confidence. She has talked about learning to

2:50:03 > 2:50:07embrace failure after Sochi, turning it into a learning experience, I

2:50:07 > 2:50:14went for it, gave it my best and failed, that is a cake, I am going

2:50:14 > 2:50:16to try again. That comes down to taking the risk

2:50:16 > 2:50:25to win. You can't just expect -- you can't just accept a failure. If she

2:50:25 > 2:50:30doesn't settle the second, it doesn't matter if she lost but took

2:50:30 > 2:50:35the risk she needed to win, she will be happier than if she sat behind

2:50:35 > 2:50:40and cruised in second or third for a medal.

2:50:40 > 2:50:48Looking at what she has done about turning it into a positive.

2:50:49 > 2:50:53It is important, this final will be noisy, they have one of their own in

2:50:53 > 2:50:58the final. She has two channel that sound. They love the sport. There

2:50:58 > 2:51:05are so many fans. You have been doing training camps there, you have

2:51:05 > 2:51:12to be comfortable with the track and culture. She talked about the death

2:51:12 > 2:51:17threats, the social media. This is where the sport has changed, Lindsey

2:51:17 > 2:51:24Vonn has had it. Even that she has learned to control.

2:51:24 > 2:51:31There are positives and negatives. She has moved past that now and show

2:51:31 > 2:51:39what a hero she is. The resilience not to shy away from the attention.

2:51:39 > 2:51:48To enjoy the situation rather than letting it make her nervous.

2:51:51 > 2:51:54letting it make her nervous. They have done a lot of training here,

2:51:54 > 2:52:02making sure there are no issues. Everything seems to be very settled.

2:52:02 > 2:52:05They have done everything they possibly can to be in the best

2:52:05 > 2:52:09position today. We just have to have faith everything they have done is

2:52:09 > 2:52:14enough. Only moments away, we are heading

2:52:14 > 2:52:18back to Pyeongchang, the arena is starting to fill up because the

2:52:18 > 2:52:24crowd adore their short track speed skating. To quote Kennedy, only

2:52:24 > 2:52:29those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. We know you

2:52:29 > 2:52:32can't win gold unless you go for it, that is what Elise Christie is

2:52:32 > 2:52:35prepared to do.

2:52:44 > 2:52:52In Korea, we are very superstitious. We hate the number four.

2:52:52 > 2:52:56We try to stay away from that. COMMENTATOR: They have all gone

2:52:56 > 2:53:03down!

2:53:03 > 2:53:07I have had quite a lot of abuse over the Internet which has been tough as

2:53:07 > 2:53:18well. I am finding it quite hard.

2:53:19 > 2:53:27On the kites, we write our name and our birthday. We let them fly high.

2:53:27 > 2:53:41As they saw, we release them. And just like that, it is gone.

2:53:45 > 2:53:50Elise Christie is up against the home crowd, up against their

2:53:50 > 2:53:55favourite, Choi Minjeong. If you could whisper something to her, what

2:53:55 > 2:53:58would it be? Enjoy every second. She is prepared,

2:53:58 > 2:54:04she is ready and had to go out now and show what she can do.

2:54:04 > 2:54:08We will definitely enjoy watching this as we had Ubak to Wilf O'Reilly

2:54:08 > 2:54:16and Simon Brotherton for the final of the

2:54:16 > 2:54:204.5 laps for Olympic glory for somebody in this women's 500m, they

2:54:20 > 2:54:26have been gripping the crowd into a frenzy. Most people joining in with

2:54:26 > 2:54:31the music. The skaters will be introduced shortly, what is the key

2:54:31 > 2:54:37here? Is it about the psychology? Keeping your nerve, holding your

2:54:37 > 2:54:43nerve as much as it is about what is in your legs at this level?

2:54:43 > 2:54:47Absolutely, the psychology on the ice, waiting in the box where the

2:54:47 > 2:54:53skaters prepare, but in the changing rooms. The Brits will be close to

2:54:53 > 2:55:00the Korean team, walking past them. Psychology is happening backstage.

2:55:00 > 2:55:08The skaters come into the arena, it is packed. Who can keep their nerve?

2:55:08 > 2:55:13We are about to be introduced. What will Elise Christie have been doing

2:55:13 > 2:55:17since the semifinal? In the changing room, the equipment

2:55:17 > 2:55:23would have been checked. There was performed with Boutin. Everything

2:55:23 > 2:55:30will be checked exactly to make sure everything is OK. She will have gone

2:55:30 > 2:55:36on to the bike, spinning the leg, getting the lactic acid out. Talking

2:55:36 > 2:55:42about strategy. How much of an issue is it that we have five skaters

2:55:42 > 2:55:47instead of four? It does make it difficult

2:55:47 > 2:55:51particularly for Elise, if she goes into the first corner in fourth

2:55:51 > 2:55:58place, you have to protect your place and set the path to take over

2:55:58 > 2:56:04from the skate in front of you. Another key will be, don't panic,

2:56:04 > 2:56:08early in the race, if you where you want to be.

2:56:08 > 2:56:15Here we go. What a raw. This is it, this is what they had been working

2:56:15 > 2:56:29for. And from gun to tape, under three quarters of a minute. -- What

2:56:29 > 2:56:35a roar. Onto the ice for the first gold medal race in the women's short

2:56:35 > 2:56:44track. Elise Christie, consistently good at this distance, silver

2:56:44 > 2:56:48medallist in the World Championships on two occasions, twice second

2:56:48 > 2:56:53overall at this distance in the World Cup competitions. This is not

2:56:53 > 2:56:57the event or one of the events in which she is world champion but she

2:56:57 > 2:57:03is the world record-holder. There is an element of showbiz about the

2:57:03 > 2:57:06final which was missing from the earlier rounds, in the

2:57:06 > 2:57:17introductions. Choi Minjeong, just 19 years of age,

2:57:17 > 2:57:23the overall World Cup world champion, at the age of 16, seven

2:57:23 > 2:57:30senior wad championship gold medals for her.

2:57:30 > 2:57:37Silver medallist in Sochi four years ago, Fontana. Position number three,

2:57:37 > 2:57:46now. European 1500 metres silver

2:57:46 > 2:57:52medallist this year already, Van Kerkof.

2:57:58 > 2:58:05There she is. Is this to be her moment.

2:58:10 > 2:58:18Kim Boutin, writes number one at 1000m this season. 23 years of age,

2:58:18 > 2:58:21from Quebec, the outside.

2:58:26 > 2:58:33Who has looked good today, so far, for you?

2:58:33 > 2:58:38Choi, after that last semifinal, looks incredibly good. What has been

2:58:38 > 2:58:44impressive is Fontana has been starting way better. It is nearly

2:58:44 > 2:58:51time. The Olympic final of the women's 500 metres.

2:58:52 > 2:58:59women's 500 metres. The nation holds its breath.

2:58:59 > 2:59:05Away they go, the final is on, they get away first time. Van Kerkof not

2:59:05 > 2:59:10with a great start, Christie moving through on the inside, right behind

2:59:10 > 2:59:16Choi. Fontana leads the way, Boutin of Canada in second. Elise back in

2:59:16 > 2:59:22fourth, she has work to do to get into contention. We know she has got

2:59:22 > 2:59:27the speed. Fontana still needs from Boutin. Christie trying to hug the

2:59:27 > 2:59:37inside line. No room past Boutin, almost

2:59:38 > 2:59:45Christie is out of it once again! Fontana! It is a photo finish on the

2:59:45 > 2:59:49line between Arianna Fontana and Choi Minjeong but in her quest for

2:59:49 > 2:59:54gold, Elise Christie ends up on the floor again. She crashed out of the

2:59:54 > 3:00:01final four years ago and history repeats itself in Korea. She doesn't

3:00:01 > 3:00:06finish the race. One chance gone, ending in bitter, bitter

3:00:06 > 3:00:10disappointment for Elise Christie who is doubled over at the moment,

3:00:10 > 3:00:18she has two more attempts to claim an elusive Olympic medal.Well,

3:00:18 > 3:00:22well, well, what do I say? She's crossing the line now so she has

3:00:22 > 3:00:27officially finished the race. We don't know what the decision is

3:00:27 > 3:00:34going to be. Fontana in tears. She isn't the only one in tears at the

3:00:34 > 3:00:39end of this race, it was a mad scramble to the first bend and Elise

3:00:39 > 3:00:43Christie is so, so upset down there at the moment but let's look at the

3:00:43 > 3:00:52race again. -- but let's look at the race again. You can see Boutin

3:00:52 > 3:00:59pushing the Korean but that won't help Elise Christie at all. It'll be

3:00:59 > 3:01:05interesting to see who crossed the line first. Was it Arianna Fontana

3:01:05 > 3:01:09or Choi Minjeong? That wasn't the angle we needed but it is a photo

3:01:09 > 3:01:11finish for first place and provisionally Yara Van Kerkhof

3:01:11 > 3:01:17third.

3:01:17 > 3:01:27third. This is the shot we need. And it is Arianna Fontana.

3:01:27 > 3:01:32it is Arianna Fontana. Arianna Fontana from Italy is the Olympic

3:01:32 > 3:01:37champion. It is has sixth Olympic medal and, for the first time in her

3:01:37 > 3:01:43Korea, it is a gold one.An outstanding athlete, disappointment

3:01:43 > 3:01:47for Christie but let's not take it away from Arianna Fontana. She has

3:01:47 > 3:01:52had all the colours and now, finally, a gold-medal.Arianna

3:01:52 > 3:01:56Fontana is the Olympic champion in the women's 500 metres. Choi

3:01:56 > 3:02:04Minjeong second. Yara Van Kerkhof, provisionally, is third.

3:02:04 > 3:02:08provisionally, is third. Boutin and Christie in last place in the final.

3:02:08 > 3:02:12A crushing blow for Elise Christie. She has to go away and put it behind

3:02:12 > 3:02:19her and tried to come back for the 1,000 and 1500 but there is a video

3:02:19 > 3:02:23review going on as you can see so it is a provisional result at the

3:02:23 > 3:02:28moment.

3:02:28 > 3:02:33moment.Sometimes the skaters know if they've been in a little bit of a

3:02:33 > 3:02:37push or shaft and clearly Arianna Fontana was at the front, she made

3:02:37 > 3:02:42it, and you can see here is Boutin pushing the Korean on the outside so

3:02:42 > 3:02:48the penalty will go to her. And as Elise Christie tries to go up the

3:02:48 > 3:02:52inside, you can see the left-hand of Boutin coming across which is what I

3:02:52 > 3:03:00think stopped Christie going on the inside.Still they haven't

3:03:00 > 3:03:05officially announce the winner. We could see that Fontana cross the

3:03:05 > 3:03:11line in first place. It is a penalty for Choi Minjeong of Korea! She's

3:03:11 > 3:03:16been penalised and the home crowd cannot believe it. Arianna Fontana

3:03:16 > 3:03:22is the Olympic champion, Yara Van Kerkhof takes silver, and Kim Boutin

3:03:22 > 3:03:27from Canada has the bronze!Well, that is outstanding, amazing! I've

3:03:27 > 3:03:33never seen anything like that happen before. The difference is that the

3:03:33 > 3:03:38referee sees the race from a different angle than what we do or

3:03:38 > 3:03:43the television so he has clearly seen something we have not.Let's go

3:03:43 > 3:03:52back to Elise Christie as the Canadians celebrate, late in the day

3:03:52 > 3:03:56after that video review. Do you think police was in a position that

3:03:56 > 3:04:00the laps were going by, she wasn't in the front and she reached a point

3:04:00 > 3:04:04where she thought if I stay where I am now I'm not going to get a medal

3:04:04 > 3:04:08anyway, I have to do everything I possibly can and I'll take my

3:04:08 > 3:04:12chance, I've got to make a move? Do you think that is what was going

3:04:12 > 3:04:16through her mind?I don't think so. There was a gap which was going up

3:04:16 > 3:04:22the inside because I think Boutin was pushing the Korean on the

3:04:22 > 3:04:25outside and I thought Elise was going to go up the inside and the

3:04:25 > 3:04:30left-hand of Boutin, so from the angle we are seeing on the

3:04:30 > 3:04:35television, it would've been clearly... I would have been calling

3:04:35 > 3:04:40Boutin but the referees have other angles. You've been there, won a

3:04:40 > 3:04:44lot, had a lot of disappointment along the way. By the way, we cannot

3:04:44 > 3:04:51show you Elise Christie because we are on host pictures so the pictures

3:04:51 > 3:04:56are provided for us. Here is the final again. You've dealt with

3:04:56 > 3:04:59disappointment as well as victory. She's going to have to be incredibly

3:04:59 > 3:05:05strong mentally now to come back and perform at her best. This is a

3:05:05 > 3:05:09massive, massive disappointment, after everything that happened four

3:05:09 > 3:05:15years ago, all the problems that ensued four years ago, to come back

3:05:15 > 3:05:19and become the world champion and now this has happened again.

3:05:19 > 3:05:24Amazing, in one word. I'd put her down for a medal. Superb skating by

3:05:24 > 3:05:29Arianna Fontana and Yara Van Kerkhof and a big disappointment for Elise

3:05:29 > 3:05:36Christie.Well, well done, Arianna Fontana, second four years ago, now

3:05:36 > 3:05:41the Olympic champion. It was a great skate from her but what a

3:05:41 > 3:05:45disappointment for Elise Christie. She has two more chances.

3:05:45 > 3:05:46disappointment for Elise Christie. She has two more chances.

3:05:46 > 3:05:50STUDIO: Hopefully we will be able to catch up with Elise Christie and get

3:05:50 > 3:05:57her thoughts on it. We were watching that final. Talk is through what

3:05:57 > 3:06:01went wrong. She had a good start, she was aggressive and got away

3:06:01 > 3:06:12fast. It was pretty messy, there is five people in there. There is no

3:06:12 > 3:06:17room for error. Her hand gets taken out. There is always contact. Little

3:06:17 > 3:06:22bits and pieces you can't do anything about. I feel terrible for

3:06:22 > 3:06:26her. She was skating is so well, I am sure she will be very

3:06:26 > 3:06:31disappointed.The Dutch skater, Van Kerkhof took her hand out, she lost

3:06:31 > 3:06:35her balance and she fell but you see this aggression from the very

3:06:35 > 3:06:35her balance and she fell but you see this aggression from the very

3:06:35 > 3:06:40difficult start position in lane format, gets to the inside but

3:06:40 > 3:06:43doesn't quite have the pace to do what we've seen how to do before, to

3:06:43 > 3:06:50undertake.There are three people in front of you so when it is close and

3:06:50 > 3:06:55when the skaters are in front of you, you can't overtake them at one

3:06:55 > 3:06:59time so you wait for the field to spread out so by the time she has

3:06:59 > 3:07:03caught up, she's biding her time. She had a little slip which was

3:07:03 > 3:07:08difficult to see.Looks like she might get through there, but she

3:07:08 > 3:07:13gets knocked out. Had she finished fourth, she would have been promoted

3:07:13 > 3:07:21to bronze but in going for it she has risked everything. She said she

3:07:21 > 3:07:26would do that, so she's taken a risk, she has tried her best, and

3:07:26 > 3:07:30today was not per day. But we still have to make distances to go, her

3:07:30 > 3:07:36favourites.The home crowd in shock because Choi Minjeong who just got

3:07:36 > 3:07:40beaten in the photo finish then gets disqualified so no medal for Korea,

3:07:40 > 3:07:45no medal for Great Britain, gold going to a stalwart of

3:07:45 > 3:07:46no medal for Great Britain, gold going to a stalwart of short-track

3:07:46 > 3:07:49speed skating, Arianna Fontana, and Italy celebrate.Yes, Arianna

3:07:49 > 3:07:53Fontana has been around for a long time, she has won everything and

3:07:53 > 3:07:58done Olympic silver for her it is the same situation where this is the

3:07:58 > 3:08:03last thing she has to win. You can see from the shots of her

3:08:03 > 3:08:08celebrating and crying this means an awful lot to her as well.Going back

3:08:08 > 3:08:13to Elise, in terms of what she can build on now, how quickly does she

3:08:13 > 3:08:18turned her brain around and say, right, that's gone, I am back in the

3:08:18 > 3:08:22present, I still have the 1,000 and 1500?She needs to be methodical,

3:08:22 > 3:08:28watch the racing, make peace with it, move on and be ready. She has a

3:08:28 > 3:08:31few days left before she competes against a while sure she will manage

3:08:31 > 3:08:36to turn things around for herself because the positives from this is

3:08:36 > 3:08:41she is skating really well so it is just how the skating go somehow

3:08:41 > 3:08:48dead-mac sometimes. We will hear from her. She is with David. Well,

3:08:48 > 3:08:52Elise, clearly very disappointed, tell us, if you can, what is going

3:08:52 > 3:08:57through your mind right now?I was knocked over, I didn't follow my

3:08:57 > 3:09:06own... Doesn't give you any benefit when someone gets a penalty in the

3:09:06 > 3:09:14final. I've worked so hard for the 500. It has been taken away from me.

3:09:14 > 3:09:23Even in the semifinal, I got crashed in. And ended up in lane format. --

3:09:23 > 3:09:30four. I know it is short-track and I'm supposed to be prepared for this

3:09:30 > 3:09:34but it still hurts.I know and we all feel for you. Millions of people

3:09:34 > 3:09:40watching back home and we have seen your journey and they are support

3:09:40 > 3:09:43you have everywhere is rarely behind you but you have come back from this

3:09:43 > 3:09:48before and I am sure you are strong enough to do it again.Hopefully.

3:09:48 > 3:09:53I've got a few days to be said. Obviously, it is a week until my

3:09:53 > 3:10:07best distance. I have to stay positive. I can't see to live with

3:10:07 > 3:10:10this feeling. I got a bad draw and got knocked over and that is that.

3:10:10 > 3:10:17You have a lot of strong people behind you. Charlotte, Martin, your

3:10:17 > 3:10:23roommate, who will be for you tonight. As you say, there is a lot

3:10:23 > 3:10:26to build on. Two Olympic records, wasn't to be tonight but your

3:10:26 > 3:10:33favourite distances to come. There are positives to take. Yeah,

3:10:33 > 3:10:39definitely, but I don't think I will be taking much positives tonight.

3:10:39 > 3:10:44Listen, Elise, thank you, and so sorry about today and we will be

3:10:44 > 3:10:47supporting you for the next distances.

3:10:47 > 3:10:51Everybody just wanting to reach out and give her a hug. It is disturbing

3:10:51 > 3:11:01to see how that upset.Hopefully, she is emotional, and she has always

3:11:01 > 3:11:06been emotional and hopefully that gets all of that out and she isn't

3:11:06 > 3:11:11going to hold it in. She doesn't really have a filter. You always see

3:11:11 > 3:11:18the real Elise, she's always out there. It is good for people to see

3:11:18 > 3:11:23how much it really means. She is devastated right now.She has said

3:11:23 > 3:11:28before I don't want to be remembered as the girl who cried on TV. You are

3:11:28 > 3:11:33right. She is so raw and she feels hard done by so let's have a little

3:11:33 > 3:11:38look at that crash because she says she was taken out. If you watch a

3:11:38 > 3:11:47hand go down, her hand is knocked away and that unbalances her. She is

3:11:47 > 3:11:50trying to get back outside the markers on the short bend. Watch her

3:11:50 > 3:11:56hand.

3:11:56 > 3:11:58hand.A lot of weight is going through her hand

3:11:58 > 3:12:01hand.A lot of weight is going through her hand to steady her. Her

3:12:01 > 3:12:05hand is taken away from her which is out of her control.

3:12:05 > 3:12:07hand is taken away from her which is out of her control.Yara Van Kerkhof

3:12:07 > 3:12:11then gets moved up to a silver medal position because Choi Minjeong gets

3:12:11 > 3:12:19disqualified. Do you get any right of appeal? No, once the race is done

3:12:19 > 3:12:24and the decision is made, then it is over.As I mentioned earlier, for my

3:12:24 > 3:12:28key is to the day since this happened in Sochi. We will take

3:12:28 > 3:12:29another look at that,

3:12:29 > 3:12:30happened in Sochi. We will take another look at that, just in terms

3:12:30 > 3:12:34of... It isn't history repeating itself because it is different.

3:12:34 > 3:12:38Arianna Fontana was in the final, she now has the gold medal from

3:12:38 > 3:12:44Pyeongchang. And Elise was it different person, and different

3:12:44 > 3:12:47skater, a risk taker, went out the inner, took out Arianna Fontana and

3:12:47 > 3:12:54got disqualified. It is another one of those 50-50 calls. If you are

3:12:54 > 3:12:58level with the skater, you should be OK, which, to me, it looks like she

3:12:58 > 3:13:05was. But you just don't know. When there is contact and crashes, the

3:13:05 > 3:13:09referee doesn't always have the same view as you have and the different

3:13:09 > 3:13:14angles we have on TV so we just have to accept their decision, as hard as

3:13:14 > 3:13:19it might be.For the second Olympics in a row, Elise Christie will feel

3:13:19 > 3:13:24she was robbed.Yes, because it wasn't down to her own skating. She

3:13:24 > 3:13:30has to take the positive from that. She still has two distances to go.

3:13:30 > 3:13:30All

3:13:30 > 3:13:32She still has two distances to go. All her emotions are into this first

3:13:32 > 3:13:37distance. And there has been so much expectation on her because she is so

3:13:37 > 3:13:41strong. Hopefully, she will put it behind her and move on, which she

3:13:41 > 3:13:46will because she is the comeback queen.Exactly. You've got to be so

3:13:46 > 3:13:51strong, mentally. It is so heartbreaking. We wanted to see an

3:13:51 > 3:13:55interview with her afterwards as a world champion with her positive

3:13:55 > 3:14:01attitude.With a medal of any colour!Yes, she went for the win or

3:14:01 > 3:14:06she was going to crash. But she crashed because she got taken out

3:14:06 > 3:14:12and your sport is brutal. It is so heart-wrenching.There's this awful

3:14:12 > 3:14:18saying, the short-track in the Olympic Games...But it isn't any

3:14:18 > 3:14:25consolation. It is disappointing, first and foremost for Elise, for

3:14:25 > 3:14:29her family, for her coaching team. Let's go out to Wilf O'Reilly who

3:14:29 > 3:14:34has had time to digest what has happened. In your opinion, is Elise

3:14:34 > 3:14:43right to feel that she was robbed of the chance of a medal?

3:14:44 > 3:14:46the chance of a medal?As I said, one of the things I saw from the

3:14:46 > 3:14:51angle we were watching, it looked more like Boutin should have

3:14:51 > 3:14:56received the penalty. That wouldn't have helped Elise at all, but

3:14:56 > 3:15:00clearly the camera angles that the referees C, and this is something we

3:15:00 > 3:15:05have been trying to get changed, that we also have the same camera

3:15:05 > 3:15:11angles as the referees, it

3:15:11 > 3:15:13angles as the referees, it makes more sense to the people watching. I

3:15:13 > 3:15:18said Elise was trying to go through on the inside, you could see that,

3:15:18 > 3:15:25it looked to me that Boutin's left hand was trying to block Elise and,

3:15:25 > 3:15:29ultimately, Choi Minjeong got the penalty, and I've lost the plot

3:15:29 > 3:15:38completely!It is one of those incidents where short track speed

3:15:38 > 3:15:44skating is more difficult understand than it should be.

3:15:47 > 3:15:51what we need to understand, looking at it in a positive way is Elise has

3:15:51 > 3:15:56had these disappointments in Sochi, the first disappointment here. I

3:15:56 > 3:16:00said before, just to get a medal would be the way to move forward.

3:16:00 > 3:16:09She has been forced again. She has the 1500 and 1000 still to go. She

3:16:09 > 3:16:16needs now, and the British camp and back in the UK, get behind her, stay

3:16:16 > 3:16:19positive. It is just the start of the Olympics.

3:16:19 > 3:16:25You don't want her slipping into a feeling, it doesn't work for me at

3:16:25 > 3:16:29the Olympics, I'm OK at the World Championships.

3:16:29 > 3:16:35Absolutely. The most important thing now. The thing the British camp has

3:16:35 > 3:16:40to do, be positive. Everything was according to plan. The final is

3:16:40 > 3:16:45where it didn't work out. It is not the end, we still have two

3:16:45 > 3:16:49distances. The next race is on Saturday?

3:16:49 > 3:16:58That is correct. We still have a few days to get ready. She will have a

3:16:58 > 3:17:02day off from training tomorrow. I haven't seen any of the GB team but

3:17:02 > 3:17:07I assume she will have a day off to regather her thoughts, maybe spend

3:17:07 > 3:17:14time with family. That is where she has had the support. That is where

3:17:14 > 3:17:25she will resort to, I feel. Thank you.

3:17:25 > 3:17:32So Sensible, always. Let us look at Elise Christie's schedule.

3:17:32 > 3:17:38Three opportunities to win an Olympic medal. One of them has gone

3:17:38 > 3:17:44from having made the final, I am afraid Elise Christie crashing out

3:17:44 > 3:17:48that final, finishing fourth, but no medal.

3:17:48 > 3:17:56On Saturday, the 1500 metres heats. On Tuesday, 1000 metres heats.

3:17:56 > 3:17:58Thursday, the semifinal and final of that.

3:18:05 > 3:18:11I think the next few days are crucial to her. Hopefully as Wilf

3:18:11 > 3:18:17said, GB will get behind her, be positive, pick her back up.

3:18:17 > 3:18:22That will be a huge thing for her. You had been in this position. Who

3:18:22 > 3:18:31do you go to? I imagine her mum, to be honest, a hug from your mum.

3:18:31 > 3:18:37She has a few close people around her, her mum is one of them. I am

3:18:37 > 3:18:42sure she will spend time with them, and with Nick, they will turn it

3:18:42 > 3:18:48into something more practical and look at the positives, and move on.

3:18:48 > 3:18:55As we have seen in winter sport, it doesn't matter what, an awful lot

3:18:55 > 3:18:59can go wrong. This is the women's luge, the final

3:18:59 > 3:19:05run, with Emily Sweeney.

3:19:39 > 3:19:43COMMENTATOR: Any mistake at this point, and this is what she has been

3:19:43 > 3:19:47doing, a massive mistake, she is struggling to keep under control,

3:19:47 > 3:19:55she is crashing, a Big Bang. Hitting her head on the wall. She looks OK.

3:19:55 > 3:20:01She is distraught, poor Emily. This slide, she starts to turn into

3:20:01 > 3:20:06the corner. Going at such an angle it will turn have violently back the

3:20:06 > 3:20:11other way and from that point she is struggling to stay in control. You

3:20:11 > 3:20:18can see the angle, almost 180 degrees, it slips her around. She is

3:20:18 > 3:20:24completely out of control. What can she do? It hits the bottom. She

3:20:24 > 3:20:31nearly spends all the way around. She looks OK. She is saying she is

3:20:31 > 3:20:34fine. Probably feeling a bit claustrophobic with the amount of

3:20:34 > 3:20:41people around her. Hopefully as she works around, maybe her neck is

3:20:41 > 3:20:45stiff, going to the far side, she will get a big applause from

3:20:45 > 3:20:52everybody. Absolutely.

3:20:52 > 3:20:59We were gossiping here, it is rare they actually come off the sled, the

3:20:59 > 3:21:08sled itself can cause damage. -- gasping.

3:21:08 > 3:21:12It is incredible what the body goes through.

3:21:12 > 3:21:20Building up to medal contenders. Germany in second position. You

3:21:20 > 3:21:29would think a gold medal guaranteed. Let us join our commentators.

3:21:29 > 3:21:35Welcome, a fascinating stage. Down the run goes Frisch, part of the

3:21:35 > 3:21:40German team not long ago but now sliding for Korea, and pretty well.

3:21:40 > 3:21:50She has had a great four runs, that line into 12 was great but is it

3:21:50 > 3:21:54enough? Time is slipping away. Is the remaining going to pick of

3:21:54 > 3:22:01another position? Frisch, is she losing it late in the

3:22:01 > 3:22:08day? She is. Ultimate disappointment for her. The unlikely Stramaturaru

3:22:08 > 3:22:20still leads with now just six to go. Stramaturaru, to remind you, has had

3:22:20 > 3:22:25two distant finishes in the Olympic Games before. As Frisch takes the

3:22:25 > 3:22:30acclaim of the Korean crowd. There was nothing really wrong with

3:22:30 > 3:22:35that run, no big mistakes, just the remaining slider has put in such a

3:22:35 > 3:22:41fantastic run. She has been brilliant, the

3:22:41 > 3:22:4332-year-old from Romania. Frisch has acquitted herself really

3:22:43 > 3:22:49well this week. Just got a little bit ragged at the end.

3:22:49 > 3:22:57Maybe forcing the bottom too much. Embracing the crowd and the

3:22:57 > 3:23:03atmosphere. As we head towards the final sliders.

3:23:03 > 3:23:09This is it, the top six now. MacRae has a big start over the remaining.

3:23:09 > 3:23:16Going for Canada. Barring a disaster for her, she should be about to move

3:23:16 > 3:23:23herself to the top of the leaderboard. Third in the wild

3:23:23 > 3:23:28championships, fifth in Sochi. She has pedigree.

3:23:28 > 3:23:41She has been sliding well. You can't really hear anything from the sled.

3:23:41 > 3:23:47This is the key corner, nailing it straight, perfect. The running blade

3:23:47 > 3:23:51just touched the wall as it brushed part but didn't knock her of course.

3:23:51 > 3:23:56That should be the optimum line as she pulls away, coming into almost

3:23:56 > 3:24:02the final corner and up the hill. McRae has been excellent, what a

3:24:02 > 3:24:10week for the Canadian. She goes to the front with a 46.6, really quick,

3:24:10 > 3:24:16excellent work from her. That puts a little bit of pressure on Hamlin,

3:24:16 > 3:24:21the American bronze medallist from Sochi. Hamlin you would have thought

3:24:21 > 3:24:24will hold her position but McRae has done what she should have done, put

3:24:24 > 3:24:30the pressure on. A great one. No big mistakes.

3:24:30 > 3:24:36Adjusting her hands in the second corner. This was perfect. The camera

3:24:36 > 3:24:41shows how close she was to the wall. You can see the difference in the

3:24:41 > 3:24:46lines, the other is slightly flatter. She is carrying more speed

3:24:46 > 3:24:50so that little wave, trying to find the optimum balance between a flat

3:24:50 > 3:24:53line and slightly wavy line to carry the speed.

3:24:53 > 3:24:57The culmination of the women's individual championship at the

3:24:57 > 3:25:02Games.

3:25:03 > 3:25:07Games. Geisenberger is clear but the battle of the medals promises to be

3:25:07 > 3:25:12tight. Hamlin amongst the mix, creating history by being the first

3:25:12 > 3:25:18American to win a medal in this event back in Sochi. Hamlin gets

3:25:18 > 3:25:25married shortly. This will be one heck of a wedding present.

3:25:25 > 3:25:31She needs to put a big run in here. Do not worry about the Canadian. You

3:25:31 > 3:25:35need to worry about the third-place position. All she wants to see when

3:25:35 > 3:25:40she comes down is at number one spot. She can't do anything about

3:25:40 > 3:25:46the slide is coming next. A little bit early. Those other mistakes

3:25:46 > 3:25:50costing people medals. She will definitely drop behind the Canadian

3:25:50 > 3:25:58but how many more spots will she drop? Will she hold on? This will be

3:25:58 > 3:26:03close.Always the buzz ability of mistakes still to come. Hamlin has

3:26:03 > 3:26:08been untidy. She cannot beat the Canadian. Hamlin is ALP of the

3:26:08 > 3:26:18medals. McRae just gets a little bit closer to them. Still with four to

3:26:18 > 3:26:20come. McRae leading.

3:26:23 > 3:26:27This is what we have been seeing from a lot of the athletes, the

3:26:27 > 3:26:32pressure, they know they have to get that corner nine write down the

3:26:32 > 3:26:40chicane, named the Dragons tell. Coming onto nine a bit too early. --

3:26:40 > 3:26:46Dragon's Tail. It is coming early which is why she puts her feet down.

3:26:46 > 3:26:53That is the difference coming down the front and being behind.

3:26:53 > 3:27:01Three Germans in the last four. I'd Burger is in fourth place, her

3:27:01 > 3:27:17first Olympic Games, age 20 seven. -- Eitberger. She may well get a

3:27:17 > 3:27:25medal heaping stats of pressure on Huefner and Gough to come.

3:27:25 > 3:27:33-- stacks. Number two in the world. All these sliders have been so

3:27:33 > 3:27:38consistent, there is nothing between them in terms of equipment their

3:27:38 > 3:27:43driving styles. It is all about, they know how to get down the track,

3:27:43 > 3:27:46it is about how they can handle the mental pressure of the optimum line

3:27:46 > 3:27:53and making sure they are building speed, especially as they come down

3:27:53 > 3:27:57corner eight and nine which has cost so many people. And it but late into

3:27:57 > 3:28:0112 but she has got through straight, this should be enough to hold onto

3:28:01 > 3:28:08the lead and put pressure on the next person. Holding a big gap.

3:28:08 > 3:28:15Looking as if she will be fourth at the very worst. We knew from the

3:28:15 > 3:28:19men's anything can happen with the big three. A strong one. She knows

3:28:19 > 3:28:29it.

3:28:29 > 3:28:34Could we see a clean sweep of the podium for Germany.

3:28:34 > 3:28:38That was a big one.She knows it. That has happened many times in

3:28:38 > 3:28:49history, the last time was 2006. Eitberger has done all she can and

3:28:49 > 3:28:54waiting in the wings is Alex Gough who is currently in third place.

3:28:54 > 3:29:01Knees probably trembling. What Gough needs to do now is absolutely jewel

3:29:01 > 3:29:06that straight. If she gets back slightly wrong or slightly out of

3:29:06 > 3:29:12the optimum line, she might struggle to stay in front. She needs to be

3:29:12 > 3:29:16inch perfect all the way down the track.

3:29:16 > 3:29:21The crowd here getting so excited and rightly so. This scrap the

3:29:21 > 3:29:26medals is astonishing. Alex Gough, fourth in the singles in

3:29:26 > 3:29:32Sochi, fourth in the team relay. She is not going to finish fourth again,

3:29:32 > 3:29:40is she? She is potentially less than 60 seconds away from a medal.

3:29:40 > 3:29:43Eitberger has stacked so much pressure on the shoulders of the

3:29:43 > 3:29:5030-year-old from Canada. We need to keep a look, is it going

3:29:50 > 3:29:56to stay green or will it be read by the time we get to the bottom? There

3:29:56 > 3:30:03is not going to be much difference. Going down to the most suitable

3:30:03 > 3:30:09point. Get this right and you will give yourself a chance -- pivot bolt

3:30:09 > 3:30:16the Icher pivotal point. Will it be Olympic Ronson for Canada or

3:30:21 > 3:30:31The speed is telling off! Is she going to miss out on a medal again?

3:30:33 > 3:30:40Eitberger is guaranteed a medal and Gough will have to rely on two

3:30:40 > 3:30:46absolutely legendary luges to mess up unless the two because she is out

3:30:46 > 3:30:52of the medals again unless that doesn't happen. That is crushing for

3:30:52 > 3:30:59the Canadian. It is so, so tight between these, it is unbelievable

3:30:59 > 3:31:03how close this is going to be. When she looks back at this now, the

3:31:03 > 3:31:08little mistakes, did she overdrive this corner? Did she do too much?

3:31:08 > 3:31:15She knows, you can see how disgruntled she is. The next two

3:31:15 > 3:31:21people down, and Olympic champion, and an Olympic champion.Incredible

3:31:21 > 3:31:27scenes.They are not used to making mistakes. This is Tatjana Hufner in

3:31:27 > 3:31:38second place currently. Eitberger, Gough, McRae. After three runs,

3:31:38 > 3:31:46Hufner was second, she daily legend of the sport.

3:31:46 > 3:31:50of the sport. Silver, gold in Vancouver and a bronze. The German

3:31:50 > 3:31:57coaches watch on.I think it is unlikely that Hufner can give

3:31:57 > 3:32:00Geisenberger anything to think about in regard to the gold. Although we

3:32:00 > 3:32:09never know. Hufner usually rock-solid, can she hold her

3:32:09 > 3:32:17unnerve?We will find out when we get to the bottom. Because it is so

3:32:17 > 3:32:22close, if she makes one mistake, it is easy for her to drop back two

3:32:22 > 3:32:28places bumping the Canadian back-up into bronze. That could be that

3:32:28 > 3:32:34mistake! She has drilled a straight. Is it enough? Is it to much to keep

3:32:34 > 3:32:40the curve and speed? This could be it. This could be the difference. Is

3:32:40 > 3:32:45she going to lose it up the hill? This is so dramatic! Up the hill to

3:32:45 > 3:32:55the line! Hufner, Eitberger, Gough... She's out! The Canadian

3:32:55 > 3:33:03can't believe that! The Canadian has a medal, the youngster has a medal

3:33:03 > 3:33:08and the magnificent Hufner has blown it or is there another sting in

3:33:08 > 3:33:12detail yet with Geisenberger to come yet? That is the best ever Canadian

3:33:12 > 3:33:16result. Never before has a Canadian been in the three in the women's

3:33:16 > 3:33:20event. So dramatic, of all the people to blow it, you have thought

3:33:20 > 3:33:28it to be Hufner. We didn't think it would be Felix Loch in the men's

3:33:28 > 3:33:32event but he cracked under the pressure as well. With one person to

3:33:32 > 3:33:38go, is the German ice Queen going to fall at the last post? What an

3:33:38 > 3:33:42extraordinary climax to an extraordinary event. The gold medal

3:33:42 > 3:33:47will be one either by this young lady, Natalie Geisenberger, to

3:33:47 > 3:33:52create history to win it for the second time, or if she has a Felix

3:33:52 > 3:33:59Loch moment, the gold will go to an Olympic debut taunt, also from

3:33:59 > 3:34:06Germany, Eitberger.She looks nervous. More nervous than I have

3:34:06 > 3:34:10seen her on any of the other runs. Is this the point where the pressure

3:34:10 > 3:34:15gets to her? Even though she is an Olympic champion, is the pressure

3:34:15 > 3:34:20getting to her?She has three tenths of a second in hand more than Felix

3:34:20 > 3:34:26Loch can. The best in the world, Geisenberger, the best many have

3:34:26 > 3:34:32seen in their lifetime. As you can see from the caption, she has nearly

3:34:32 > 3:34:37half a second now. We have seen from people making mistakes at the end of

3:34:37 > 3:34:41the Dragon's tail, it can cost them over half a second so if she gets

3:34:41 > 3:34:48this corner right now, she is on her way to be an Olympic champion in

3:34:48 > 3:34:522018. She is not going to lose that amount of time in these last few

3:34:52 > 3:35:00corners. She is still holding that 45 hundredths of a second.Big lead

3:35:00 > 3:35:04for Geisenberger, she will do it once again, like she did at Sochi,

3:35:04 > 3:35:14she is the tenth German to win and only the third to win it twice! A

3:35:14 > 3:35:20great day for Germany, than! Geisenberger wins gold, Eitberger

3:35:20 > 3:35:25the silver, and for Canada, Gough is third time. Geisenberger deserves

3:35:25 > 3:35:30that, she's been magnificent.Yes she has earned the Germans are so

3:35:30 > 3:35:36happy. Possibly certainly as well after Felix Loch lost the medal the

3:35:36 > 3:35:44other night, their golden girl has pulled it off.She has indeed.

3:35:44 > 3:35:50Geisenberger and Eitberger embrace. The experienced Geisenberger and the

3:35:50 > 3:35:55youngster or the younger Eitberger together in celebration for Germany.

3:35:55 > 3:36:01The mood in the camp had turned quite after what happened to Felix

3:36:01 > 3:36:06Loch but the natural order has now been restored.Germany have

3:36:06 > 3:36:11dominated the sport for so many years and it continues. It will be

3:36:11 > 3:36:15the same in another four years, they put so much into this and you can

3:36:15 > 3:36:22see why. She is a class above the rest. She's been in a podium in

3:36:22 > 3:36:27every World Cup race. It just looks effortless. Her lines have been

3:36:27 > 3:36:31perfect, she's been the most consistent slider all the way

3:36:31 > 3:36:35through the competition, and, as we know, consistency wins medals and by

3:36:35 > 3:36:39being the most consistent, she has got the best medal of all.

3:36:39 > 3:36:48Absolutely fantastic. I hope you all enjoyed that. The German flag flying

3:36:48 > 3:36:51high, Natalie Geisenberger proves herself unequivocally the best in

3:36:51 > 3:36:56the world. STUDIO: That concludes the action in

3:36:56 > 3:37:05the luge. Friday and Saturday for the women in the skeleton. Germany,

3:37:05 > 3:37:12what a Winter Olympics there having, five gold medals for them.

3:37:12 > 3:37:13what a Winter Olympics there having, five gold medals for them. We were

3:37:13 > 3:37:17hoping Great Britain would have made it onto that medal table. Elise

3:37:17 > 3:37:22Christie got through to the final of her 500 metres but with five skaters

3:37:22 > 3:37:28in it it was a bit of a sense of deja vu as Elise Christie was taken

3:37:28 > 3:37:36out on the stage, trying to get into the middle position, watch her hand,

3:37:36 > 3:37:37and the Dutch skater Yara Van

3:37:37 > 3:37:38the middle position, watch her hand, and the Dutch skater Yara Van

3:37:38 > 3:37:43Kerkhof coming across with her skates, almost skating over her

3:37:43 > 3:37:48fingers, Sarah. You are wearing cut proof gloves, people worry about you

3:37:48 > 3:37:53and your fingers, but that very rarely happens. She has kicked hand

3:37:53 > 3:37:56from underneath her and you have a lot of weight going through your

3:37:56 > 3:38:03hand through corners so Elise had no hope of staying on her feet. What

3:38:03 > 3:38:06are the rules of interference? The whole of your body is your line,

3:38:06 > 3:38:11including your hand.Yeah. Intentional interference is not

3:38:11 > 3:38:17allowed. You are supposed to pass the skater cleanly, which she didn't

3:38:17 > 3:38:18do, but the

3:38:18 > 3:38:19the skater cleanly, which she didn't do, but the referees don't

3:38:19 > 3:38:23necessarily see everything.There were angles we've only just seen

3:38:23 > 3:38:28because we saw a special camera trying to follow it and if the

3:38:28 > 3:38:31referees, and getting the benefit of the angles, they can't make informed

3:38:31 > 3:38:36decisions.They have their cameras and they have certain things they

3:38:36 > 3:38:43have to go by and look at. You just have to go with their decision. So,

3:38:43 > 3:38:47no medal for TeamGB, no medal for Elise Christie, and this was the

3:38:47 > 3:38:53reaction the performance director, Stuart Lang.

3:38:53 > 3:38:58That was tough to watch, as a spectator. For yourself, what I'll

3:38:58 > 3:39:04fought on what happened? So, watching the race back, it happened

3:39:04 > 3:39:08so quickly, and there was quite a lot of things that happened with

3:39:08 > 3:39:12overtaking inside, there were a few grabs from a few people. We haven't

3:39:12 > 3:39:16been able to sit down with our performance analyst and watch it

3:39:16 > 3:39:18back so I don't want to point fingers.

3:39:18 > 3:39:22back so I don't want to point fingers. Elise ended up in the bald,

3:39:22 > 3:39:26hugely disappointed, but some of that is the nature of short-track.

3:39:26 > 3:39:30There was a penalty which didn't help Elise.Unfortunately not. I

3:39:30 > 3:39:38think the collision and the tussle with Kim Boutin meant Elise lost her

3:39:38 > 3:39:38footing

3:39:38 > 3:39:39with Kim Boutin meant Elise lost her footing in the corner, Kim ended up

3:39:39 > 3:39:43with the bronze and Belize has the nicht in soul destroying fourth

3:39:43 > 3:39:51place.An athlete is distraught, how do you handle that situation? We

3:39:51 > 3:39:53have brought our psychologist out with us and we have scenario planned

3:39:53 > 3:39:58a lot of this. Elise is here to compete over three different

3:39:58 > 3:40:03distances so we have role-played what happens if the first one

3:40:03 > 3:40:09doesn't go to plan. We will regroup, refocus, give her time to die just

3:40:09 > 3:40:13and obviously there is a load of emotion that goes into making an

3:40:13 > 3:40:18Olympic final and to cope with what has just happened. And you are the

3:40:18 > 3:40:21man who is interested in the psychological side and you have done

3:40:21 > 3:40:26a lot of work with her over the years about that. Immediately, the

3:40:26 > 3:40:31mind is cast back to what happened in Sochi and it is almost like it

3:40:31 > 3:40:35has mirrored again. How do you make sure she doesn't get into that

3:40:35 > 3:40:39mindset?I think we go back and we come back to some of the processes

3:40:39 > 3:40:46we play. I won't go into the details of what those are but, crucially,

3:40:46 > 3:40:54Elise is in a much more robust place. She hasn't got a penalty and

3:40:54 > 3:41:00she has finished the race in fourth place. Obviously, none of us wanted

3:41:00 > 3:41:07it to be written this way. But we come back on Saturday, she has the

3:41:07 > 3:41:111500 metres, something she is world champion at, and we will come out

3:41:11 > 3:41:15fighting again.I take it you'll be underlining the fact that she broke

3:41:15 > 3:41:19two Olympic records here and she has to make distances to come in which

3:41:19 > 3:41:23she is on paper, in medals times, much stronger than she is in the

3:41:23 > 3:41:28500.We look at her, she has speed, power, the world record for the 500

3:41:28 > 3:41:34metres but isn't something... As you can see in the racing, you have to

3:41:34 > 3:41:39give everything. The 1500 metres and 1,000 are her more favourable events

3:41:39 > 3:41:45and we will sit down and focus on those.Everyone back home is

3:41:45 > 3:41:49watching Elise and rooting for her so pleased to underline that to her

3:41:49 > 3:41:56whenever you get to see her.I will do, thank you.

3:41:56 > 3:41:59Elise's boyfriend was there, the first one to put his arms around

3:41:59 > 3:42:03her, and he is saying these things happen. Is that Nicky Gooch? We

3:42:03 > 3:42:09think so. You just need to be comforted. As you all know, sport is

3:42:09 > 3:42:15cruel, it isn't about how many times you fall down but about how many

3:42:15 > 3:42:20times you can get back up again. She can go away, and cry but she has got

3:42:20 > 3:42:25to be back and on it on Saturday. The support staff will make sure

3:42:25 > 3:42:29she's there as well. She has a lot of people helping her and she is a

3:42:29 > 3:42:33tough cookie and she will come back strong. And Stuart Lang is very

3:42:33 > 3:42:38sensible. They knew it was going to go one way or the other, either we

3:42:38 > 3:42:44are celebrating or not. They have to prepare for any scenario and there

3:42:44 > 3:42:47could be any outcome. You have to prepare for these things, you can't

3:42:47 > 3:42:51just prepare to win.Even if they prepared to win, they would have had

3:42:51 > 3:42:55to deal with that, too, so that she isn't over aroused and excited so it

3:42:55 > 3:43:00is amazing they have those plans in place. There is her mum, she will

3:43:00 > 3:43:04offer comfort and support because it has been another dramatic day in the

3:43:04 > 3:43:09life of Elise Christie. We will see you over on BBC Two shortly.

3:43:09 > 3:43:12When I am on the ice, I am free.

3:43:21 > 3:43:27Away they go, clean start. Up towards the line! The new Olympic

3:43:27 > 3:43:31record. Away they go and they are away first

3:43:31 > 3:43:37time. Christie challenging on the inside, up towards the line!

3:43:37 > 3:43:42Christie into the final. Away they go, the final is on, they get away

3:43:42 > 3:43:48first time. Christie hugging the inside line... Christie crashes out

3:43:48 > 3:43:51in her quest for gold! Elise Christie ends up on the
