0:00:05 > 0:00:13the best of the sunny conditions to be found further east. Bye now.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41Good morning and welcome to coverage of the middle Saturday of the Winter

0:00:41 > 0:00:46Olympics here on BBC One. We are with you until 1.45 and this is the

0:00:46 > 0:00:49biggest day so far of these games for the British team. There has been

0:00:49 > 0:00:53good news already. Before we get into skeleton and short track speed

0:00:53 > 0:00:58skating, a second medal of the games, this time won by the youngest

0:00:58 > 0:01:00member of the team, 19-year-old Izzy Atkin landing a clean running

0:01:00 > 0:01:07freestyle skiing to secure her place on the podium.Next to drop will be

0:01:07 > 0:01:14Great Britain's Izzy Atkin.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19The biggest one of her life starts now.Mechanical with the 450, laid

0:01:19 > 0:01:26it down beautifully.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29it down beautifully. She comes up from the side and tilt the skis onto

0:01:29 > 0:01:34it.

0:01:34 > 0:01:40it. This run is flowing for her now. Dare I say it, the best rails we

0:01:40 > 0:01:51have seen from her. Come on, Izzy Atkin.

0:01:51 > 0:02:01Atkin. Final junta... -- final jump. And it's super-clean! Its

0:02:01 > 0:02:12third-place! 84.6.

0:02:12 > 0:02:20third-place! 84.6. She's down. Great Britain's Izzy Atkin takes a bronze.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Talk spirit. There were tonnes of big names in the field. It could

0:02:23 > 0:02:29have been anyone's. I was standing at the bottom after my final run. I

0:02:29 > 0:02:32knew I had skied the best I could on my heart was racing. I can't believe

0:02:32 > 0:02:33it.

0:02:37 > 0:02:42She held her nerve. She didn't push it too far. Izzy Atkin, at the age

0:02:42 > 0:02:47of 19, lives in Park City, Utah. She was born in the USA became to the

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Britain for the first time in five months old. Her grandma Betty still

0:02:50 > 0:02:55lives in Birmingham and her dad Mike, who is out there with her mum

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Zoe, they said that grandma Betty would have recorded it and watched

0:02:58 > 0:03:04it all this morning. And that is what she has been rewarded with, a

0:03:04 > 0:03:07bronze medal, seeing her granddaughter on the podium. Katie

0:03:07 > 0:03:12Summerhayes, by the way, finished seventh. That is the start of what

0:03:12 > 0:03:15could be an exceptional day here for the British team. There is so much

0:03:15 > 0:03:22to look forward to on a very special Saturday.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Saturday.Three medals for Great Britain! What a night.Olympic long

0:03:31 > 0:03:39jump champion Greg Rutherford.Mo Farah for Great Britain!Jessica

0:03:39 > 0:03:50Ennis is the Olympic champion.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26It's funny how these things tend to happen on Saturday. Six years on

0:04:26 > 0:04:29from Jess Ennis-Hill, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah, it's time

0:04:29 > 0:04:34for Elise Christie, Lizzy Yarnold and Laura Deas to skate and slide

0:04:34 > 0:04:38into the limelight. It's the midway point of these Winter Olympics, the

0:04:38 > 0:04:42biggest and best British team ever sent to a winter games, and it has a

0:04:42 > 0:04:46chance today to make history. Never has a British athlete retained a

0:04:46 > 0:04:51winter Olympic title. Never have British athletes filled two places

0:04:51 > 0:04:55in the top three of a Winter Olympics boards. Never has a skater

0:04:55 > 0:05:03from these shores won a gold medal in short track speed skating. In

0:05:03 > 0:05:082014 and 15, Lizzy Yarnold was the skeleton supremo. She was Olympic

0:05:08 > 0:05:11champion, world champion, European champion and World Cup champion.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16Then she stepped away, exhausted. She had achieved everything. She got

0:05:16 > 0:05:21married, she do a course in book-keeping, she made lampshades.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Then two seasons ago, she got back on a sled with one goal in mind -

0:05:24 > 0:05:30retaining her Olympic title. She is third at the halfway stage, one

0:05:30 > 0:05:34tenth of a second behind the leader. And right on her tellies her

0:05:34 > 0:05:39team-mate and friend, 29-year-old Laura Deas. She is lapping up the

0:05:39 > 0:05:43experience of her first Olympics and setting hugely impressive times. She

0:05:43 > 0:05:47was the second fastest on 12 to move up to fourth place, tantalisingly

0:05:47 > 0:05:54close to the podium. When Elise Christie was at school, she was

0:05:54 > 0:05:57teased and bullied for being pale and thin. They called her skeleton.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01She took up bigger skating and then switch to a sport where she thought

0:06:01 > 0:06:05she could control the outcome - short track speed skating. She has

0:06:05 > 0:06:11been through the best and worst of experiences in the last ten years. A

0:06:11 > 0:06:15ten time European champion, 12 medals at world level, three World

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Championship titles, including the coveted overall gold medal. And yet

0:06:19 > 0:06:25at the Olympics, she has a score to settle. Buoyed by support from Jess

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Ennis-Hill and Kelly Holmes, Christie has a first Olympic medal

0:06:28 > 0:06:35in mind. You have to go back to February three, 1924 to find the

0:06:35 > 0:06:39last time that a British team won more than one medal on the same day

0:06:39 > 0:06:45at a Winter Olympics, and if one of them was to become champion... Well,

0:06:45 > 0:06:52they would join this very exclusive list of ten. In 1924, the men's

0:06:52 > 0:06:57curlers took Britain's first ever Winter Olympics gold. In 1936, it

0:06:57 > 0:07:03was the men's ice hockey team. Then figure skater Jeannette Altwegg won

0:07:03 > 0:07:10told in 1952. In 1964, bobsledder 's Tony Nash and Robin Dixon topped the

0:07:10 > 0:07:19podium. At Innsbruck in 1976, the late, great John Kerry was the star.

0:07:19 > 0:07:25And four years later, Robin Cousins too was all gold on the ice. In

0:07:25 > 0:07:301984, Jayne Torvill in Christopher Dean's Bolero was legendary. Salt

0:07:30 > 0:07:36Lake City saw Rhona Martin and co-win curling gold. Then skeleton

0:07:36 > 0:07:41sliders Amy Williams in 2010 and Lizzy Yarnold in Sochi topped the

0:07:41 > 0:07:46podium.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51podium. And there are the three faces of the women who today could

0:07:51 > 0:07:57step into those history books, Elise Christie, Laura Deas, Lizzy Yarnold.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02We have got a couple of hours of live sport here that will thrill

0:08:02 > 0:08:05you, excite you. Anything could happen. These are sports in which

0:08:05 > 0:08:12nothing is guaranteed, but the first round of the 1500m is at 10.15,

0:08:12 > 0:08:19followed by Elise Christie at 11.10 and in the final is at midday. The

0:08:19 > 0:08:20skeleton runs, ran three.

0:08:33 > 0:08:44If you want to get in touch, use the hashtag # BBC Olympics.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49hashtag # BBC Olympics. We have experts in short track with us,

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Sarah Lindsay and Jon Eley have competed at three Olympics each in

0:08:52 > 0:08:55short track speed skating. They know Elise Christie well. They know what

0:08:55 > 0:09:00happens. And Alex Coomber was the woman who in the 21st century

0:09:00 > 0:09:03restarted this revolution in skeleton. She won a bronze medal and

0:09:03 > 0:09:08since then, it has been silver and gold all the way for the skeleton

0:09:08 > 0:09:14sliders. It's a big day, Sarah. Some of what you hope for form today.I

0:09:14 > 0:09:22just want a -- Elise to do her best so she can be happy with what she

0:09:22 > 0:09:28has done.Yeah, some great performances and everyone coming

0:09:28 > 0:09:32away with a smile.Alex, how would you describe the skeleton

0:09:32 > 0:09:38competition?I can't wait. The girls are so different. It will be so

0:09:38 > 0:09:43exciting. We will see changes amongst the top sliders and the last

0:09:43 > 0:09:46run will be incredible. You said yesterday it could be the most

0:09:46 > 0:09:49exciting skeleton competition we have ever seen. Here is what has

0:09:49 > 0:09:54happened so far.

0:09:59 > 0:10:04She is a quality athlete, but she has the pressure on in these games

0:10:04 > 0:10:13of wanting to retain her title. Is she going to lose speed? This could

0:10:13 > 0:10:19be the run that puts her at the top of the pile. It's going to be close.

0:10:19 > 0:10:28Needs to be cleaned. She goes first! Quicker than Loelling. Clearly,

0:10:28 > 0:10:34Lizzy Yarnold is here for business. Obviously, it's not going to help,

0:10:34 > 0:10:38but I think she's used to this. At least it has happened before, so

0:10:38 > 0:10:43it's not like it's the first time. Her team will know what to do to get

0:10:43 > 0:10:51her ready.Come on, Laura, keep this together. She has just got to stay

0:10:51 > 0:10:56relaxed. I think she is going to hold onto the lead. She has got to

0:10:56 > 0:11:06go under 52 seconds at the finish. Again, a wobble.I'm only seven

0:11:06 > 0:11:09hundredths away from a medal position. This is a sport where

0:11:09 > 0:11:13anything can happen and things can change in a split-second. I want

0:11:13 > 0:11:19stay positive. Is this enough for her to stay in front? She might drop

0:11:19 > 0:11:28behind the Austrian.Very close between Loelling and Lizzy Yarnold,

0:11:28 > 0:11:36who has dropped back to third place, a tenth of a second off the leader.

0:11:36 > 0:11:44I have a sore sinus thing going on. I'm struggling to breathe enough. It

0:11:44 > 0:11:50is very cold here. I am doing lots of steaming. I think I am still well

0:11:50 > 0:11:56in the mix.She is well in the mix. She is in third place, a tenth of a

0:11:56 > 0:11:59second behind the leader. This morning, she said, I have my eyes on

0:11:59 > 0:12:04the prize.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10the prize. She is the big race performer, Alex, and although in the

0:12:10 > 0:12:14last two years her form has been in doubt, she has struggled to get back

0:12:14 > 0:12:19to the heights of 2014-15. What do you think we saw yesterday and what

0:12:19 > 0:12:25can we expect from her? It's true. The season has not been great for

0:12:25 > 0:12:28her, but she has come back. She set a track record on the first run when

0:12:28 > 0:12:34she wasn't feeling great. What can she do when she is fine? Hopefully,

0:12:34 > 0:12:39she had last night to sort herself out, maybe had a good rest. She is

0:12:39 > 0:12:45ready for this. She has had this balance problem and a slight

0:12:45 > 0:12:53blacking out during a run. We are not worried about that, we?Well, I

0:12:53 > 0:12:56am assuming she has a great team who will keep an eye on that. They will

0:12:56 > 0:13:01not let her do anything that will endanger her or injure her. She has

0:13:01 > 0:13:06had this for a long time and they are used to dealing with it.And she

0:13:06 > 0:13:12is always so calm and methodical. Laura Deas, we know less about. Many

0:13:12 > 0:13:17have never heard of her until yesterday.

0:13:17 > 0:13:22And now she is forth. Her improvement was exceptional.I have

0:13:22 > 0:13:26been really impressed with her. I did think the nerves would get to

0:13:26 > 0:13:31her, but seeing her interviewed yesterday, she was calm and

0:13:31 > 0:13:36motivated. You can see she knows what she wants to do. She is in the

0:13:36 > 0:13:40perfect place in fourth. She is not in a medal position at the moment.

0:13:40 > 0:13:46The same thing happened with Dom. People talk about being under the

0:13:46 > 0:13:50radar and having no pressure. The pressure is only what you put on

0:13:50 > 0:13:53yourself. She wants a medal, so fourth place for her is a

0:13:53 > 0:13:59disappointment.Definitely. The fact that her first run was not great and

0:13:59 > 0:14:04she came back fighting, and she had the second best time on the second

0:14:04 > 0:14:09run. Most of the girls had a worse second run and it is a four run

0:14:09 > 0:14:16race, so if she can keep improving, I would be amazed if she is not up

0:14:16 > 0:14:19there in the medals at the end.We have had lots of questions about

0:14:19 > 0:14:24skeleton. Alex, you are so knowledgeable. Let me repeat what

0:14:24 > 0:14:29you said about why it is called skeleton? It was originally called

0:14:29 > 0:14:32the skeleton bobsleigh, meaning you stripped everything off a

0:14:32 > 0:14:36bobsleighed and what have you got left? Just the bottom and the

0:14:36 > 0:14:39runners. Then as skeleton tried to find its own identity, we became

0:14:39 > 0:14:45skeleton bob, then we dropped the word Bob and we are skeleton. So it

0:14:45 > 0:14:48is just the bare bones. Rosie and Johnny have been watching carefully

0:14:48 > 0:14:52and they want to know, how do they slow down and is it saw when you

0:14:52 > 0:14:58fall off?At the end of the track, once they have come of the finish

0:14:58 > 0:15:04line, you will see that all of the women are pushing up. The track also

0:15:04 > 0:15:08goes uphill and eventually, they will hit a bit of foam or a mat and

0:15:08 > 0:15:13you go from sliding really fast to coming almost to a complete stop.

0:15:13 > 0:15:19Falling off is common. You can come right off your sled, but you can get

0:15:19 > 0:15:29back on it. The hits look worse on TV than when it happens in reality,

0:15:29 > 0:15:35because you ping off and you have protection on the sleds. Right at

0:15:35 > 0:15:40the front, there are metal bumpers. So although it looks like the

0:15:40 > 0:15:46athlete is slamming into the wall, it is normally the sled. And what do

0:15:46 > 0:15:53you need as qualities to be a good skeleton slider?Skeleton is one of

0:15:53 > 0:15:56the most difficult sports to teach. I have taught on novice courses and

0:15:56 > 0:16:00you can tell within the first one or two runs whether someone will be

0:16:00 > 0:16:04good, because you have to be so quick thinking. It has to be so

0:16:04 > 0:16:09instinctive. You can't teach someone to think fast. Everything is coming

0:16:09 > 0:16:13at you so quickly. You need to be steering for the band that is coming

0:16:13 > 0:16:20in 20 or 30 metres, early. If you do it later, it is too late. So it is

0:16:20 > 0:16:26about quick thinking, staying calm in a pressured situation, having a

0:16:26 > 0:16:29fast start, maintaining your aerodynamic position, not getting

0:16:29 > 0:16:35worried and fiddling about. So it is a combination, but ultimately, a lot

0:16:35 > 0:16:42of it is just instinctive. That is where the Britons have tended to be

0:16:42 > 0:16:44good in identifying people who seem to be able to do it naturally. Both

0:16:44 > 0:16:50Laura Deas and using Arnold came through the talent ID programme. --

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Lizzy Yarnold. Lizzy talks about listening to an orchestra of

0:16:53 > 0:16:56information. So she really does highlight the speed at which your

0:16:56 > 0:17:00brain is working. But also physically, you have got to be

0:17:00 > 0:17:07brave.Yeah. Ultimately, it's a contradictory sport. You have to be

0:17:07 > 0:17:11fast and explosive as you are starting, but in a split-second you

0:17:11 > 0:17:15then have to be relaxed and you have to try and let yourself work as one

0:17:15 > 0:17:20with the track. You can't fight it as you go down, because it will

0:17:20 > 0:17:28always win and slow you down. So it is a contradictory sport. It is

0:17:28 > 0:17:33hugely mental. The mental side of it is probably more important than the

0:17:33 > 0:17:38physical side. It is just that combination of attributes. If you

0:17:38 > 0:17:44get a good package together, you have a good slider.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48Laura Deas and Lizzy Yarnold came from other sports. They are

0:17:48 > 0:17:52competitive. The World Cup is not exactly glamorous, you don't go into

0:17:52 > 0:17:56it if you want to be mollycoddled. You are talking about driving

0:17:56 > 0:18:01halfway around Europe and the world, hours on the road, staying in places

0:18:01 > 0:18:07that you would not go on holiday. It is cold and early start, late

0:18:07 > 0:18:12starts, it is a brutal sport. You are going out, and you are often

0:18:12 > 0:18:18getting battered as you go down this cold, icy, unforgiving track. But

0:18:18 > 0:18:23weirdly, that is what the draw is. And you want to do it again. If you

0:18:23 > 0:18:30say so! You saw Lizzy at the end of the run, Jen Ryan helping her off

0:18:30 > 0:18:34the track, undoing the top of her suit, because she was struggling to

0:18:34 > 0:18:38breed. But she recovered quickly and looked happier as she walked off the

0:18:38 > 0:18:44track. -- Tabriz.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48If you can do that when you are not feeling great, what is she capable

0:18:48 > 0:18:54of when she feels better today? We will focus fully on skeleton from

0:18:54 > 0:18:5811:30 on BBC One. Let's turn our attention to short track speed

0:18:58 > 0:19:03skating. You can't guarantee anything in this sport. It's

0:19:03 > 0:19:07roughest, toughest, most unpredictable event of the lot.

0:19:07 > 0:19:13Tight corners, slipping and sliding, shoulders charging, it is ruthless.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15Last Tuesday, Elise Christie was on the deck in the final of the 500

0:19:15 > 0:19:25metres, she finished fourth in the end and is trying to stay positive.

0:19:25 > 0:19:32Is this to be her moment? It's tough, I worked so hard for the

0:19:32 > 0:19:37500, and it has been taken away from me. I know it's short track and I am

0:19:37 > 0:19:41supposed to be prepared for this, but it still hurts, you know?

0:19:41 > 0:19:53I don't know Will it is I can't see living with this feeling, you know?

0:19:53 > 0:19:58I think that night was obviously pretty rubbish, but after that, the

0:19:58 > 0:20:03next day, I woke up and I thought about everything. I have said to you

0:20:03 > 0:20:07guys before, it's short track, it out of my control. My hand was

0:20:07 > 0:20:12kicked and it was an accident, short track, nothing I can do about it.

0:20:12 > 0:20:17For me, my focus is mainly on the 1001st, I have the 1501st, I will

0:20:17 > 0:20:22see what I can do without and pick up a medal. The 1000 is the one I

0:20:22 > 0:20:26will try to get the gold in.It seems like you are philosophical and

0:20:26 > 0:20:31I know this is experience helping you get over this.Definitely. It

0:20:31 > 0:20:34was nowhere near as dramatic as Sochi. What happened, I couldn't

0:20:34 > 0:20:39have done anything about. I know that, as frustrating as it is, I

0:20:39 > 0:20:45have to move forward now. Thanks to everyone who has sent me

0:20:45 > 0:20:53lovely messages of support, I never expected that, so it's amazing. My

0:20:53 > 0:20:57two eras, Jessica Ennis-Hill Kelly Holmes both sent me a tweet, that's

0:20:57 > 0:20:59amazing -- Heurelho Gomez.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Sportsmen and women understand sport is crazy and harsh at times, but

0:21:06 > 0:21:10they've gone through things like this before, and I can get through

0:21:10 > 0:21:11this and come out the other end.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13this before, and I can get through this and come out the other end.

0:21:13 > 0:21:18So good to hear Elise speaking with so much more confidence, to be

0:21:18 > 0:21:20honest, she get over these things quickly and shares her emotions with

0:21:20 > 0:21:28all of us. She, let's not forget, is supreme in this sport. She won three

0:21:28 > 0:21:33gold medals at World Championships in 2017, including the overall

0:21:33 > 0:21:38title, first European skater to do that. But at the Olympics so far, it

0:21:38 > 0:21:42has not gone well. Disqualified in all three events at the Winter

0:21:42 > 0:21:45Olympics in Sochi, and crashing in the 500 metre final at the Olympics.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49But this happens all the time, doesn't it, in short track speed

0:21:49 > 0:21:55skating. This is her today. It is part and parcel of sport,

0:21:55 > 0:21:59things go wrong. It happens in a lot of sport. For us, this is not an

0:21:59 > 0:22:03unusual circumstance, like we said, but today she will come again and

0:22:03 > 0:22:07focus. I know there was a lot of talk after Tuesday about what the

0:22:07 > 0:22:11team have got to do to help Elise switchback in, she would know what

0:22:11 > 0:22:12to do.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14switchback in, she would know what to do. There has been no divine

0:22:14 > 0:22:18intervention. It is the plan as usual, we will crack on and get on

0:22:18 > 0:22:20with it, coming back to be ready today.

0:22:20 > 0:22:26Does her approach need to be calm, or is it good to have anger there?

0:22:26 > 0:22:30Who knows with Elise. One day she will bounce off the walls and

0:22:30 > 0:22:33perform brilliant, other times she is focused and doesn't talk a lot.

0:22:33 > 0:22:39You are never sure with her, but she has refocused. Word from camp is she

0:22:39 > 0:22:43is in a good place and feeling positive, and is ready to go today.

0:22:43 > 0:22:50Given what happened on Tuesday, John, she fell, yes, didn't win a

0:22:50 > 0:22:55medal, but finished and got a result.Completely different to

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Sochi, she finished fourth, our best result in the sport since 1994, that

0:22:59 > 0:23:03is a massive positive for the team. It was a disappointment she didn't

0:23:03 > 0:23:08get the medals you wanted, but she had another chance to go again, and

0:23:08 > 0:23:12refocus.Today is three times the distance. On Tuesday, it is over so

0:23:12 > 0:23:13refocus.Today is three times the distance. On Tuesday, it is over so

0:23:13 > 0:23:17quickly. Looking at it again, she was fighting to try to get up there

0:23:17 > 0:23:22to win a medal.Watching the race back over and over, she didn't do

0:23:22 > 0:23:26one thing wrong. She couldn't have made a better decision. Sometimes

0:23:26 > 0:23:31the decisions go against you. She did a good start, but got boxed in

0:23:31 > 0:23:34because of Lane four. She took advantage and responded well to

0:23:34 > 0:23:38that. It created something else to happen. All the things that went

0:23:38 > 0:23:42wrong, nothing was to do with her performance. She is performing

0:23:42 > 0:23:45really well, I hope she takes confidence from it, even though it

0:23:45 > 0:23:51was not the result she wanted. Her boyfriend there, Nicky Gooch coming

0:23:51 > 0:23:57in, they said to her, don't go through the interviews. She said she

0:23:57 > 0:23:57wanted to, because

0:23:57 > 0:23:58through the interviews. She said she wanted to, because the quicker she

0:23:58 > 0:24:01does them, the quicker she gets through it.She is an emotional

0:24:01 > 0:24:06athlete, she likes to go out and be upset, but that is how she turns

0:24:06 > 0:24:10things around so quickly. One of the few people I know that can switch

0:24:10 > 0:24:14energy quickly. If I was like that after a race, I would be knackered.

0:24:14 > 0:24:20She feeds of that.Sometimes you can't change your personality, you

0:24:20 > 0:24:24can't become a completely different individual because you are a

0:24:24 > 0:24:28sportswoman. Making the most of who you are is sometimes the key.I

0:24:28 > 0:24:33think some of that can be the reason why she does so well, and the reason

0:24:33 > 0:24:38why she can also make mistakes. That big personality, and all that

0:24:38 > 0:24:42emotion, she just has to channel it in the right way.We will see her

0:24:42 > 0:24:46heat in a couple of minutes. They are running a bit behind. We have

0:24:46 > 0:24:52the opportunity to see Team GB's second medal of the Olympic Games.

0:24:52 > 0:24:58Izzy Atkin, you will see her on the right-hand side, she is about to

0:24:58 > 0:25:04receive her bronze medal from the freestyle skiing slopestyle. That

0:25:04 > 0:25:08will give everybody confidence, two medals already does help. Gold went

0:25:08 > 0:25:18to Sarah Hoefflin of Switzerland. I'm liking their outfits. I love the

0:25:18 > 0:25:22officials, the volunteers, helping to put the officials in place.

0:25:22 > 0:25:31Just a reminder, down there, coming up next, Elise Christie going in

0:25:31 > 0:25:37lane three. She will still be racing fearless. Also, Charlotte Gilmartin

0:25:37 > 0:25:43and Cap Thomson, catching up what happened in their heat as they try

0:25:43 > 0:25:47to make their way to the semifinals. It is a busy day for Elise, not a

0:25:47 > 0:25:51bad thing that three races come quickly after each other, there is

0:25:51 > 0:25:58no time to think. For Izzy Atkin, 19 years old, youngest member of Team

0:25:58 > 0:26:04GB. She knew exactly what she had to do, because everybody was falling,

0:26:04 > 0:26:09basically, all over the place. They were going for big tricks and jumps,

0:26:09 > 0:26:14and she thought, as Jenny Jones did four years ago, land a run that is

0:26:14 > 0:26:20clean and she could land a medal. That is exactly what happened. On

0:26:20 > 0:26:28the right there.

0:26:31 > 0:26:37ANNOUNCER:Bronze medallist, Great Britain.

0:26:41 > 0:26:48Britain. Izzy Atkin.

0:27:06 > 0:27:11All of Izzy Atkin's family out there watching her, and her grandma Betty,

0:27:11 > 0:27:16watching from Birmingham, this is a wonderful moment. A second medal of

0:27:16 > 0:27:21these games for Team GB, for Izzy Atkin, her first experience of an

0:27:21 > 0:27:27Olympics, she is coming back with a medal. Based in Utah most of the

0:27:27 > 0:27:31time, but she showed bravery there and a bit of Knauss. We have talked

0:27:31 > 0:27:34about intelligence in skeleton, and how much you have to think, how

0:27:34 > 0:27:38instinctive do you have to be in short track speed Skating making

0:27:38 > 0:27:42decisions quickly and changing your mind? You can have your race tactics

0:27:42 > 0:27:46planned to a tee, but there are so many people on the ice with you that

0:27:46 > 0:27:50can change those things for you. You had to be able to adapt to other

0:27:50 > 0:28:03people's decisions.Four years ago in

0:28:07 > 0:28:08Sochi, in 1500 metres, Elise Christie won her semifinal

0:28:08 > 0:28:11relatively easily, but put her left skate, as she pushed it forward, she

0:28:11 > 0:28:14put it to the left of the finishing line, and the cameras picked that

0:28:14 > 0:28:16up. Officially, she hadn't crossed the line. It was the weirdest

0:28:16 > 0:28:19disqualification of the lot.It is a rule in our sport. The camera picks

0:28:19 > 0:28:21it up because it is used for the photo finish.

0:28:21 > 0:28:22it up because it is used for the photo finish. It is classed as a

0:28:22 > 0:28:25non-finish. As we said earlier the week, you can go anywhere you want

0:28:25 > 0:28:28on straight ways when you race, but at the finish line, you have to

0:28:28 > 0:28:33crossed the finish line. With two laps ago, moved into second place.

0:28:33 > 0:28:40Arianna Fontana, who won on Tuesday, she is in this race, not in the same

0:28:40 > 0:28:45heat, but in the 1500 metres again. Elise Christie, easy as you like,

0:28:45 > 0:28:48thinks she has qualified for the final, no panic at all. She looked

0:28:48 > 0:28:59up at the board, didn't she, and saw a penalty.Just devastating. It is a

0:28:59 > 0:29:04rule, but it is not something that you think is going to happen.I

0:29:04 > 0:29:08talked to her about it when I went to see her, and she said she had

0:29:08 > 0:29:12never done it before. Usually, the cameras wouldn't pick that up. But

0:29:12 > 0:29:17you can see it there. Let's handover to heat five, Elise Christie, let's

0:29:17 > 0:29:21join Simon Brotherton. COMMENTATOR: Elise Christie on the

0:29:21 > 0:29:25ice for the first time since the 500 metre final the other day. A quick

0:29:25 > 0:29:35run through of the runners and riders, Zhou Yang from China,

0:29:35 > 0:29:42currently in second position there, number 137. Zhou Yang is the

0:29:42 > 0:29:50two-time and defending Olympic champion at this distance. Bianca

0:29:50 > 0:29:58Walter. It is a 13.5 lap race. Elise Christie there, just tucked in in

0:29:58 > 0:30:02third place. The game, the skaters here jostling for position. Volta is

0:30:02 > 0:30:15in the lead. Ten laps remaining. Nothing to worry about now.Three of

0:30:15 > 0:30:19the six will go through.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31The Olympic silver medallist in the relay four years ago in second. Zhou

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Yang is third. In fifth place at the moment, Elise Christie biding her

0:30:35 > 0:30:40time. Zhou Yang moves around the outside. Bianca Walter from Germany

0:30:40 > 0:30:48tries to follow her up into second place at the moment, behind the

0:30:48 > 0:30:51defending Olympic champion.Elise is comfortable at the speed at the

0:30:51 > 0:30:58moment. Six laps to go, one, two and three will qualify. She really needs

0:30:58 > 0:31:02to start thinking about making a move. The Canadian also having that

0:31:02 > 0:31:07thought as well. Moving through on the outside. Now they start to wind

0:31:07 > 0:31:10it up with five to go. Zhou Yang on the front. Bianca Walter skating

0:31:10 > 0:31:19well. Christie in five. She tries to go on the inside. A little bit of a

0:31:19 > 0:31:24gap back to them from the front three. Zhou Yang staying out of

0:31:24 > 0:31:30trouble, the Olympic champion on the front. Christine now starts to show

0:31:30 > 0:31:34some of her speed that we know she has got in her legs. Christie around

0:31:34 > 0:31:39the outside, draws up level with the Olympic champion from China. Elise

0:31:39 > 0:31:45Christie sweeping round at the Bell into first place. That's more like

0:31:45 > 0:31:48it from the World Champion. Elise Christie now can ease up a little

0:31:48 > 0:31:53bit. She knows she's going through. That was a tremendous return to the

0:31:53 > 0:31:56ice after what happened the other day. Safely through to the

0:31:56 > 0:32:03semifinal. Elise Christie of Great Britain. It showed how confident she

0:32:03 > 0:32:08was in this race, just took her time, waited and waited, and waited.

0:32:08 > 0:32:12Didn't do an awful lot of work. When she put the foot down, it was around

0:32:12 > 0:32:16the outside and left everybody standing.Very assured performance

0:32:16 > 0:32:24from the World Champion. We can see the move from Christie around the

0:32:24 > 0:32:29outside of the Olympic champion. She made that look so easy, sitting down

0:32:29 > 0:32:36deep on the straight, getting the maximum leg extension. And just

0:32:36 > 0:32:44totally concentrated on the process rather than the medal.Pace, control

0:32:44 > 0:32:48and dominance in that heat from Elise Christie. A reminder that this

0:32:48 > 0:32:55event goes all the way from the heat to the final in this session, here,

0:32:55 > 0:32:59so we will have the semifinals. They go straight from this, no

0:32:59 > 0:33:07quarterfinals, they go straight into the semifinals and the final.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17The three you would have expected to go through with the three who went

0:33:17 > 0:33:23through. We have the sixth and final heat here in the women's 1500m to

0:33:23 > 0:33:29go. The skaters are on the ice already. The three-time World

0:33:29 > 0:33:35Championship medallist is in the field. Also the Hungarian, the

0:33:35 > 0:33:4019-year-old.

0:33:40 > 0:33:5019-year-old. Choi Minjeong of Korea. Sofia Prosvirnova, the Olympic

0:33:50 > 0:33:54Athlete from Russia, and the Chinese athlete on the outside on the

0:33:54 > 0:34:02left-hand side. Away they go.

0:34:02 > 0:34:08left-hand side. Away they go. It is fair to say that Choi Minjeong is

0:34:08 > 0:34:11the favourite for gold here.Well, we have seen so many turn ups for

0:34:11 > 0:34:15the books in the last few short track days, so I wouldn't put my

0:34:15 > 0:34:18money on anyone at the moment. That was a superb piece of skating by

0:34:18 > 0:34:25Elise Christie. The good thing about this event rather than the 500 is

0:34:25 > 0:34:29that once they have started, they have time to get settled in. No need

0:34:29 > 0:34:35to panic in this one.

0:34:35 > 0:34:42to panic in this one. At the front is Kaminaga from Japan. Choi

0:34:42 > 0:34:47Minjeong moves around the outside. And before you know it, all the way

0:34:47 > 0:34:54to the front of the race. It's all about jostling for the right

0:34:54 > 0:35:00position, as the Chinese skater moves through.

0:35:04 > 0:35:15moves through. Li Jinyu is leaving for China -- she is leading.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17for China -- she is leading. Choi Minjeong seems very comfortable in

0:35:17 > 0:35:23third place. And Prosvirnova, the Olympic Athlete from Russia, tries

0:35:23 > 0:35:29to move on the inside. Everyone is still pretty much in contention.

0:35:29 > 0:35:39Lana Gehring from the USA is up into fourth, a bit of jostling.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44fourth, a bit of jostling. As Choi goes around the outside, Prosvirnova

0:35:44 > 0:35:51is stuck in third place. Superb piece of skating from her. Can she

0:35:51 > 0:35:56retain that third spot to qualify for the semifinal?Choi Minjeong is

0:35:56 > 0:36:04looking good. Her form has looked superb this week. Prosvirnova is

0:36:04 > 0:36:11third at the moment. There will be one lap to go. Choi Minjeong staying

0:36:11 > 0:36:17out of trouble at the front. There will be a battle for the other two

0:36:17 > 0:36:21places. Choi Minjeong is trying to ease off the gas. She slides over

0:36:21 > 0:36:28the line. It is a photo finish between the Hungarian and the

0:36:28 > 0:36:37Chinese athletes. She made that look very comfortable. That means that

0:36:37 > 0:36:43two of the Korean skaters are now through to the semifinals. That will

0:36:43 > 0:36:47help Elise Christie. Normally, there are always three Korean skaters in

0:36:47 > 0:36:51the final. And I wouldn't say they are teams getting, but they will not

0:36:51 > 0:36:55hinder one another. So a strong skate from Elise Christie and from

0:36:55 > 0:37:06Choi Minjeong.

0:37:17 > 0:37:26It could be Super Saturday! But the first thing that has happened

0:37:26 > 0:37:29smoothly is Elise Christie winning her heat. It is such a different

0:37:29 > 0:37:33pace in the 1500m. They go very steady

0:37:33 > 0:37:35pace in the 1500m. They go very steady. But when she swept through

0:37:35 > 0:37:40to overtake, she can turn on the afterburners, can't she?Did she

0:37:40 > 0:37:44make that look easy? Just trying to save a bit of energy. She didn't do

0:37:44 > 0:37:49a lot of work until later in the race, when she did a nice overtake.

0:37:49 > 0:37:54Loads of speed, and that she settled down for the finish. She has talked

0:37:54 > 0:37:59a lot about the 1000m. She is putting a lot of expectation on

0:37:59 > 0:38:02herself for that, her favourite distance. But she is world champion

0:38:02 > 0:38:06in this. Is that just a way of telling people not to concentrate on

0:38:06 > 0:38:12the 1500?It is a bit of a protection mechanism, but she is

0:38:12 > 0:38:16world champion in the 1500m and it does play to her strengths because

0:38:16 > 0:38:20the field opens up at the end. And although she is strong, she is fast

0:38:20 > 0:38:26as well.

0:38:26 > 0:38:32as well.Does she not enjoy the 1500? It does start to hurt a bit?

0:38:32 > 0:38:36The legs start to hurt at the last five laps. So I think that is why

0:38:36 > 0:38:40she prefers the shorter distance. The lovely thing is that her success

0:38:40 > 0:38:47has prompted more athletes to get involved in short track speed is --

0:38:47 > 0:38:53's skating.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58There were others in action in the heats of the 1500m. Let's find out

0:38:58 > 0:38:59how they got on.

0:39:04 > 0:39:10Next, heat two featuring Kathryn Thomson from Great Britain, the

0:39:10 > 0:39:1622-year-old Scot in the middle of your picture.

0:39:21 > 0:39:25Han Yutong was fifth in the World Championship a couple of years ago.

0:39:25 > 0:39:33Anna Seidel is from Germany.

0:39:35 > 0:39:45Anna Seidel is from Germany. And Capcom Thompson goes to the front.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48-- Kat Thomson. The helmet numbers signify their ranking at the World

0:39:48 > 0:39:56Championships. We can see that Marian Saint July -- Marian Saint

0:39:56 > 0:40:01Delay is wearing the number two, signifying that she was second at

0:40:01 > 0:40:04the World Championships last year. She is competing on her 28th

0:40:04 > 0:40:10birthday today. She is considered one of those capable of winning a

0:40:10 > 0:40:15medal in this event. At the front for the United States, Jessica

0:40:15 > 0:40:23Kooreman. And there is Kathryn Thomson from Great Britain. She is

0:40:23 > 0:40:29at the front with nine to go.

0:40:37 > 0:40:43You can feel the pressure coming from the back as St Gelais moves

0:40:43 > 0:40:49through to take the lead.

0:40:53 > 0:40:58through to take the lead.Kat Thomson is now in fifth place.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02Valcepina has yet to make a move, letting everybody else do the

0:41:02 > 0:41:14bumping and jostling and barging for position. St Gelais in second place.

0:41:14 > 0:41:23And the German goes down, tangling with Kooreman of the United States.

0:41:23 > 0:41:34Thomson in with a chance, but now Valcepina makes a move.Valcepina

0:41:34 > 0:41:40moving through comfortably. The first, second and third will qualify

0:41:40 > 0:41:48for the semifinals with one lap to go.Han Yutong from China is

0:41:48 > 0:41:53leading. Valcepina of Italy is in third. There is a bit of a gap to

0:41:53 > 0:42:00the United States and Kooreman. Thomson comes through in fifth

0:42:00 > 0:42:05place, meaning she will not go through.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14through. But you could be reinstated. Here is the first

0:42:14 > 0:42:20problem that was caused. You can see the American, Jessica Kooreman,

0:42:20 > 0:42:25changing the line, coming from the outside into the inside. Anna Seidel

0:42:25 > 0:42:34then tried to move up the inside and collides skates.

0:42:47 > 0:42:56Cleanly away this time. Charlotte Gilmartin from Great Britain moving

0:42:56 > 0:43:01around on the outside.

0:43:12 > 0:43:19On the inside is the Singaporean, trying to nudge her way through.

0:43:24 > 0:43:28trying to nudge her way through. And on the outside, the Australian, who

0:43:28 > 0:43:34has trained in Korea with a Korean coach. It will be interesting to see

0:43:34 > 0:43:39how she fares, the Queensland from Brisbane. Perhaps not surprisingly,

0:43:39 > 0:43:41she decided that elsewhere there would be a better standard of

0:43:41 > 0:43:49training and facilities for her.

0:43:50 > 0:43:54training and facilities for her. The Dutchwoman is in second. Efremenkova

0:43:54 > 0:44:03having a look on the inside.

0:44:03 > 0:44:09having a look on the inside.Seven laps to go. A lot time of 10.82, so

0:44:09 > 0:44:14at some point, the pace has to be picked up as Schulting of the

0:44:14 > 0:44:20Netherlands goes into the lead. There was a sudden change in tempo.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24Charlotte Gilmartin is in second place at the moment for Great

0:44:24 > 0:44:32Britain. Efremenkova goes down. A slight collision with Deanna Lockett

0:44:32 > 0:44:38of Australia.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42of Australia. Schulting leads the way. They will have three laps to go

0:44:42 > 0:44:49this time. And unfortunate for by the skater from Russia. At the

0:44:49 > 0:44:53front, Schulting is making this look easy. Charlotte Gilmartin was to

0:44:53 > 0:44:57finish in second place to get a better seeding for the next

0:44:57 > 0:45:02semifinal.There is going to be a battle for second place. Schulting

0:45:02 > 0:45:07leads the way for the Netherlands. Charlotte Gilmartin holding second

0:45:07 > 0:45:10place. Deanna Lockett from Australia in third. They are the first three

0:45:10 > 0:45:16over the line.

0:45:17 > 0:45:21over the line. Charlotte Gilmartin is safely through to the semifinal.

0:45:21 > 0:45:27Let's have a look at the race again here, Wilf.We can see Lockett

0:45:27 > 0:45:31battling to retain third place. Under Russian skater again in the

0:45:31 > 0:45:36same

0:45:38 > 0:45:41same turn that saw the Korean fall. I am still questioning the quality

0:45:41 > 0:45:46of this ice.

0:45:46 > 0:45:52We can see Charlotte Gilmartin coming across the line. Interesting

0:45:52 > 0:45:57to see what, in fact, her final position would be. If she has given

0:45:57 > 0:46:02away second place.Which she may have done. There is no need for that

0:46:02 > 0:46:08whatsoever. She should have skated to the line.Ekaterina Efremenkova,

0:46:08 > 0:46:13the Olympic Athlete from Russia, is penalised. Gilmartin going through

0:46:13 > 0:46:18in third place.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21Gilmartin qualifies, but she got a ticking off for not finishing

0:46:21 > 0:46:25properly.Always skate to the line. Long-standing rule, skate to the

0:46:25 > 0:46:30line.She had a crash in the heats, hurting her ribs when she whacked

0:46:30 > 0:46:35into the wall. She was determined to do better. She will be thrilled. She

0:46:35 > 0:46:39will be pleased. She has really good skills in the 1500 metres, she comes

0:46:39 > 0:46:44late at the end and attacks. She will be up for it and she has had a

0:46:44 > 0:46:49week off to prepare, so she will be ready to go. In the next round,

0:46:49 > 0:46:53let's skate to the line.Exactly. You want to get that message to

0:46:53 > 0:46:53let's skate to the line.Exactly. You want to get that message to her.

0:46:53 > 0:47:02Let's look at the qualifiers. Kim Boutin benefited so much from the

0:47:02 > 0:47:04disqualification of the Corrie and in the 500 metres to get a bronze

0:47:04 > 0:47:15medal for Canada. Elise Christie has been drawn in semifinal three. Choi

0:47:15 > 0:47:21Minjeong is in her semifinal. She will have a lot of home support. Who

0:47:21 > 0:47:21are the

0:47:21 > 0:47:24will have a lot of home support. Who are the dangers? The top two go

0:47:24 > 0:47:30through to the final. The top two go through. Obviously, Elise and

0:47:30 > 0:47:33Charlotte in the same race. That will separate the field a little

0:47:33 > 0:47:37bit.We are loving short track, and we will get straight back out there,

0:47:37 > 0:47:44because it is the men's 1000 metres. Elise Christie will watch closely

0:47:44 > 0:47:49because her other half is competing in the fourth quarter final, let's

0:47:49 > 0:47:56rejoin Simon Brotherton.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59COMMENTATOR: Will come back. We are almost ready to go with the

0:47:59 > 0:48:04quarterfinals in the men's 1000 metres, four races to win it. They

0:48:04 > 0:48:09had the heats the other day, we have the quarterfinals now and two heats

0:48:09 > 0:48:17of four in the semifinals to go through to the final.

0:48:17 > 0:48:20through to the final. Shaolin Sandor Liu was the World Cup winner this

0:48:20 > 0:48:23winter, but he's not in this first quarterfinal. It is a strong

0:48:23 > 0:48:34line-up. We have the gold medallist in the 1500 metres. We have Thibaut

0:48:34 > 0:48:45Fauconnet. The world ranked number two from Korea, Hwang Daeheon. And

0:48:45 > 0:48:52we have the World Champion. All three of them in the quarterfinal.

0:48:55 > 0:49:01Including, the Olympic gold medallist from the 1500, and the

0:49:01 > 0:49:06current World Champion.

0:49:24 > 0:49:32Fall is start for this first quarterfinal. It's very unusual to

0:49:32 > 0:49:41have three Koreans. We can see it again. I'm not sure if

0:49:41 > 0:49:43again. I'm not sure if it was Daeheon, the second skated from the

0:49:43 > 0:49:56outside. Position three, one false start.Hwang Daeheon didn't finish

0:49:56 > 0:49:59the other day. Cleanly away this time. Scuffling into the first

0:49:59 > 0:50:10corner. Fauconnet, the Frenchman, outnumbered here.Nine laps, and

0:50:10 > 0:50:13extended sprint as Fauconnet needs to do something if he wants to go

0:50:13 > 0:50:18through to the next round. Skaters one and to qualify. At the front it

0:50:18 > 0:50:26is Hwang Daeheon. Fauconnet in third place. Six laps to go. Over the line

0:50:26 > 0:50:32this time, in second

0:50:32 > 0:50:40this time, in second place... As Fauconnet was forced wide.

0:50:40 > 0:50:48The Koreans really not playing teams skating, but they are so dominant,

0:50:48 > 0:50:55they make it impossible. They are changing the lead.Like a team

0:50:55 > 0:51:09pursuit, doing a bit on the front. At the

0:51:10 > 0:51:15At the front is Lim Hyojun. Leading is Lim Hyojun from Korea, followed

0:51:15 > 0:51:18closely. All three going for it. Sweeping through on the inside to

0:51:18 > 0:51:24take first place, the World Champion, who we didn't see until

0:51:24 > 0:51:32the end of the race, he timed his race to perfection, and ending up on

0:51:32 > 0:51:36the.

0:51:38 > 0:51:43the. Fauconnet fourth, provisionally.Running exceptionally

0:51:43 > 0:51:48well. Skating very wide, very relaxed early on. Saving his energy.

0:51:48 > 0:51:52He is the World Champion. He has skated better than I have seen him

0:51:52 > 0:51:57all week so far.A tough draw for the Frenchman here. You've got the

0:51:57 > 0:52:00world number one, the Olympic champion, the world ranked number

0:52:00 > 0:52:08one. It was almost an impossibility for him.You are not supposed to

0:52:08 > 0:52:12race as a team, but questions would have been asked if they had messed

0:52:12 > 0:52:23it up and the Frenchman went through.

0:52:25 > 0:52:29Hwang ended up on the floor. The skate has to be flat on the ice.

0:52:29 > 0:52:35They could award a penalty to the third skater. The hand coming across

0:52:35 > 0:52:38the inside.

0:52:40 > 0:52:46All about the skate that crosses the line.A perfectly timed effort from

0:52:46 > 0:52:49Seo Yira, the World Champion. He looked unruffled, unlike the other

0:52:49 > 0:52:53two as they stretched.

0:52:53 > 0:53:03And a penalty for Hwang of Korea.

0:53:08 > 0:53:10Hwang out, and the second of these quarterfinals coming up very

0:53:10 > 0:53:17shortly. The running repairs to the ice here. That's right. As Hwang was

0:53:17 > 0:53:22going over the finish line, he is trying to push his skate out in

0:53:22 > 0:53:27front of him, because that is the marker when the stopwatch is

0:53:27 > 0:53:31stopping, and whether he is going to qualify or not, and the back of his

0:53:31 > 0:53:41skate bug deep into the ice. What they will do is prepare the ice --

0:53:41 > 0:53:46repair the ice.They have a spray, it looks like a fire extinguisher.

0:53:46 > 0:53:53That's right.I can see one of the officials is about to spray the

0:53:53 > 0:53:58eyes.

0:53:59 > 0:54:04eyes. Once the fresh eyes has been plastered down onto the surface...

0:54:04 > 0:54:09There we are.

0:54:10 > 0:54:15There we are.Quite a deep rut in the ice before the finish line. I

0:54:15 > 0:54:20hope the remaining skaters don't have any problems with thata feud

0:54:20 > 0:54:29Dutch fans in tonight Derek Campbell, former Olympian and

0:54:29 > 0:54:36Olympic gold medallist, coaching the Canadian team for 12 years now.

0:54:36 > 0:54:42Amazing success is back in Vancouver.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45Vancouver.Hopefully, the repair is almost complete now. We will be able

0:54:45 > 0:54:50to continue the quarterfinals. Farrell Treacy will go in the third

0:54:50 > 0:54:57quarter final in a few minutes time. Really is quite a nasty gouge out of

0:54:57 > 0:55:02the ice made by Hwang in his desperate attempt to finish in the

0:55:02 > 0:55:09first two in that first quarterfinal.Incredibly

0:55:09 > 0:55:13disappointed to have drawn his own team-mates in this. The races are

0:55:13 > 0:55:19made up conceding points. It's only recently that the seeding points

0:55:19 > 0:55:24don't matter any more. When I skated, they kept skaters apart from

0:55:24 > 0:55:29one another. That was a little bit unfair. Now it is all about your

0:55:29 > 0:55:32world ranking, and based on a world ranking, that is where you are

0:55:32 > 0:55:37placed into the race. You can see they are refreezing the rut in the

0:55:37 > 0:55:45ice. Repairs complete and we are almost ready to go. A packed house

0:55:45 > 0:55:50inside the Ice Arena again tonight. They love short track racing in

0:55:50 > 0:55:54Korea. Locally, it is one of the hot tickets, short track.Almost one of

0:55:54 > 0:55:57the impossible tickets.

0:56:13 > 0:56:19Samuel Girard is the world silver medallist from 2016.

0:56:25 > 0:56:33A World Championship gold medals last year. Six laps to go, this time

0:56:33 > 0:56:46over the line. Kazuki Yoshinaga moving up. A lot of work to do.

0:56:46 > 0:56:49Samuel Girard comes around the outside, moving up the inside.

0:56:49 > 0:56:54Samuel Girard finishing in fourth place the other day. One that the

0:56:54 > 0:56:59Canadians have high hopes for in the years ahead, just 21 years of age

0:56:59 > 0:57:01from Quebec. Samuel Girard looking comfortable on the front at the

0:57:01 > 0:57:08moment. Having a look on the inside was Kazuki Yoshinaga, Yuri

0:57:08 > 0:57:14Confortola, the XP rinsed Italian, 31 years of age.

0:57:15 > 0:57:1831 years of age.Two that is to go, Samuel Girard still on the front

0:57:18 > 0:57:25with Yuri Confortola in second place. DeLaet in third place.Samuel

0:57:25 > 0:57:31Girard looking comfortable still. Yuri Confortola ahead of the Lark,

0:57:31 > 0:57:36who looks annoyed at himself at that.A comfortable skate from

0:57:36 > 0:57:41Samuel Girard from the front, controlling the race. Talat making

0:57:41 > 0:57:45the slip early on in the race and has to pay the penalty now by not

0:57:45 > 0:57:50qualifying.It has been a long time since Confortola was at the top of

0:57:50 > 0:57:56his game.

0:57:56 > 0:58:03his game. Bags of experience, and he used it in this quarterfinal. We can

0:58:03 > 0:58:07see Girard moving through very, very comfortably indeed. Here is the

0:58:07 > 0:58:20challenge for the line. A lot trying to squeeze up the inside.

0:58:20 > 0:58:21to squeeze up the inside. Confortola has qualified for the semifinal.

0:58:21 > 0:58:25Girard looked good, but DeLaet will be frustrated because his form is

0:58:25 > 0:58:30better than that.Absolutely. Confirmation that Confortola from

0:58:30 > 0:58:35Italy goes through behind Samuel Girard of Canada. Next up on the

0:58:35 > 0:58:41track will be the third quarterfinal, featuring Great

0:58:41 > 0:58:45Britain's Farrell Treacy, second in his heat behind John Henry Kruger of

0:58:45 > 0:58:54the United States.

0:59:00 > 0:59:13Farrell Treacy Ryosuke Sakazume. A tough one for Tracey.Big guns in

0:59:13 > 0:59:19this 1000 metres. Farrell Treacy moving through comfortably to the

0:59:19 > 0:59:24front with eight laps to go. It's all about jostling for positions.

0:59:24 > 0:59:34Farrell Treacy comes through. John-Henry Krueger of America

0:59:34 > 0:59:42cruising around the outside. Farrell Treacy trying to get

0:59:42 > 0:59:51involved and lost a little bit of speed as John-Henry Krueger is in

0:59:51 > 0:59:57second.

1:00:02 > 1:00:07John-Henry Krueger moving through up the inside with three laps to go,

1:00:07 > 1:00:11looking comfortable indeed. These two skaters fighting for that

1:00:11 > 1:00:20qualifying position. Two laps to go, in third is Ryosuke Sakazume from

1:00:20 > 1:00:23Japan. A gap back to John-Henry Krueger and Farrell Treacy hanging

1:00:23 > 1:00:29off the back at the moment.

1:00:36 > 1:00:44I was looking at the referees, and it could go anyway, to be honest,

1:00:44 > 1:00:52Simon.Knegt was involved in an incident the other day as well, for

1:00:52 > 1:00:56which he was penalised. The Dutch look a little unsure in the crowd.

1:00:56 > 1:01:00But Elistratov has shown that his form is really good so far with the

1:01:00 > 1:01:05bronze medal in the 1500. This distance is shorter than that, but

1:01:05 > 1:01:11again, he had the experience to stand his ground at the front. There

1:01:11 > 1:01:16you see Farrell Treacy getting involved early on.And here is the

1:01:16 > 1:01:24move on Knegt. He seems to be coming out to make sure he is going into

1:01:24 > 1:01:30the term.Knegt looks as though he forced John-Henry Krueger out wide.

1:01:30 > 1:01:36That could be a possible penalty for Knegt. He won the bronze medal four

1:01:36 > 1:01:40years ago at this distance.Which I think was the first Dutch medal in

1:01:40 > 1:01:46short track at the Olympic Games. That is true.Which is a very

1:01:46 > 1:01:49different scenario to the Dutch dominance in long track speed

1:01:49 > 1:01:54skating, which has continued across the way in the Oval, right next to

1:01:54 > 1:01:59this ice Arena. So do you think Knegt will be concerned?I saw him

1:01:59 > 1:02:04giving John Henry a pat on the back as if to say sorry.John-Henry

1:02:04 > 1:02:10Krueger is standing out just beyond the padding, waiting for a decision

1:02:10 > 1:02:15which he hopes might give him a reprieve. But provisionally,

1:02:15 > 1:02:19Elistratov and Knegt where the first two. And yes, Knegt has been

1:02:19 > 1:02:26penalised. He is out, so one of the medal favourites has gone. Semen

1:02:26 > 1:02:34Elistratov goes through. Ryosuke Sakazume the advances as well and

1:02:34 > 1:02:38the victim of the move by Knegt is John-Henry Krueger of the United

1:02:38 > 1:02:42States. And in fourth place, Farrell Treacy of Great Britain.

1:02:42 > 1:02:47Disappointment for the Dutch. The national coach of Hollund will not

1:02:47 > 1:02:52be happy with that decision at all. That is twice that Knegt has been

1:02:52 > 1:02:55involved in incidents at these and begins. Here comes the fourth

1:02:55 > 1:03:05quarterfinal.

1:03:25 > 1:03:32And we have a false start.I am not sure if that was the number one,

1:03:32 > 1:03:43Hamelin, on the inner lane. Of course, not forgetting the racers

1:03:43 > 1:03:47are only allowed one false start. If they do it again, they have to leave

1:03:47 > 1:03:52the ice. It was very close.

1:03:53 > 1:04:01the ice. It was very close.I think it is Dajing for China.

1:04:01 > 1:04:14it is Dajing for China. Away they go. Scrapping for that first place.

1:04:33 > 1:04:41Hamelin trying to move through the inside.Wu Dajing is looking very

1:04:41 > 1:04:46comfortable, controlling the race from the front, a tactic I used to

1:04:46 > 1:04:50enjoy. If you are going to tire towards the latter part of the race,

1:04:50 > 1:05:00it's better to be at the front than at the back.

1:05:01 > 1:05:05at the back.Hamelin in second place. Still looking good for

1:05:05 > 1:05:13Canada. The two Latvians are hanging the coat-tails of this group. A bit

1:05:13 > 1:05:27of barging. Hamelin was forced out wide, managed to stay on his feet.

1:05:27 > 1:05:35Charles Hamlin was there and the Latvian was also involved in a photo

1:05:35 > 1:05:42finish.'S stunning skating from all the skaters. The way Peter Worth is

1:05:42 > 1:05:45calling these races, it wouldn't surprise me if there are possibly

1:05:45 > 1:05:52two penalties here, maybe one from Charles Hamelin and one for Wu

1:05:52 > 1:06:01Dajing.Hamelin almost ended up on the deck. You can see the Hungarian

1:06:01 > 1:06:08crossing over, forcing easy and onto the inner of the rink. And this was

1:06:08 > 1:06:14later, when Hamelin tries to squeeze around the outside. And then exactly

1:06:14 > 1:06:21the same thing happens here with Wu Dajing trying to go around outside.

1:06:21 > 1:06:27He is not allowed to cut inside.

1:06:27 > 1:06:29He is not allowed to cut inside. You can see Wu Dajing making a mistake

1:06:29 > 1:06:36on the right pivoting leg.

1:06:36 > 1:06:39on the right pivoting leg.Pretty close on the line here, with Hamelin

1:06:39 > 1:06:46from Canada.

1:06:46 > 1:06:55from Canada. That was close. We will have to wait and see for the

1:06:55 > 1:07:02official result, because if Charles Hamelin does receive a penalty, that

1:07:02 > 1:07:10will mean Pukitis of Latvia will move through to the semifinal. This

1:07:10 > 1:07:18is the final judges' liberation from these quarterfinals.

1:07:21 > 1:07:23these quarterfinals. Wu Dajing, trying to dive in at the front of

1:07:23 > 1:07:29the race. It was all or nothing for him.The Chinese are having a

1:07:29 > 1:07:36disastrous game so far.

1:07:36 > 1:07:39disastrous game so far. This is an event that Korea has dominated over

1:07:39 > 1:07:44the years. Only twice as anyone other than a Korean won this event.

1:07:44 > 1:07:55Here comes the referee's decision. There is a penalty and Wu Dajing is

1:07:55 > 1:07:59penalised for his attempt to chop his way into the front. Shaolin

1:07:59 > 1:08:04Sandor Liu from Hungary goes through, as does Charles Hamelin

1:08:04 > 1:08:16from Canada. And Wu Dajing finishes last.

1:08:17 > 1:08:30So here were with the line-ups, those who have gone through.

1:08:54 > 1:09:00It is a day that promises so much. Six minutes away from the semifinals

1:09:00 > 1:09:04of the 1500m in short track speed skating, but this is the scene at

1:09:04 > 1:09:10the Alpensia Sliding Centre ma Laura Deas in fourth place at the halfway

1:09:10 > 1:09:13stage of the skeleton competition. And Lizzy Yarnold just in front of

1:09:13 > 1:09:18her in third. The British and Welsh fans are out in force. That is Laura

1:09:18 > 1:09:22Deas' camp cheering her on, and Lizzy has made it clear that she is

1:09:22 > 1:09:28here to defend her Olympic title. So we just want to give everybody who

1:09:28 > 1:09:32is watching around the country a little smile, a little cuddle,

1:09:32 > 1:09:36because the white tiger which is the mascot of Pyeongchang of these

1:09:36 > 1:09:40Winter Olympics, we have our two at the front of the table and I know a

1:09:40 > 1:09:43lot of people are watching at Nottingham eye centre. Hello to you

1:09:43 > 1:09:49and good luck to both Charlotte Gilmartin and police Christie --

1:09:49 > 1:09:52Elise Christie. There is also curling at the moment. The British

1:09:52 > 1:09:56women are in action against the host nation, South Korea. That has just

1:09:56 > 1:10:00started and it is on the red button and will be uninterrupted coverage.

1:10:00 > 1:10:04But we will tell you what has happened a little later. Oh, my

1:10:04 > 1:10:09word. Let's head out to the sliding centre shortly. You know about Lizzy

1:10:09 > 1:10:13Yarnold. She is the defending champion. She carried the flag at

1:10:13 > 1:10:22the opening ceremony, but what about her team-mate, Laura Deas? Who is

1:10:22 > 1:10:25she and how did she get into discussing? Nick Cudd has been

1:10:25 > 1:10:27finding out about her mindset, and she is ready for liftoff.Ignition

1:10:27 > 1:10:32sequence start.

1:10:34 > 1:10:37sequence start.You never quite know what's going to happen. It's down to

1:10:37 > 1:10:45you in that moment. There's nobody else.Talk about not feeling like a

1:10:45 > 1:10:52skeleton athlete. You weren't always a skeleton athlete.Yes, it was

1:10:52 > 1:10:56unusual in the fact that I came from an equestrian background. How big a

1:10:56 > 1:11:01switch was that? Your whole life, your mindset must have changed.I

1:11:01 > 1:11:05had never been in that sort of gym environment before. I had literally

1:11:05 > 1:11:08never stepped inside a gym until I was put through my paces for the

1:11:08 > 1:11:12skeleton trial. So it was a massive shock for my body. The focus also

1:11:12 > 1:11:17became different because as a rider, it was much more about how the horse

1:11:17 > 1:11:21feels, how they are moving and what is happening underneath me. All of a

1:11:21 > 1:11:24sudden, it was about, how am I feeling? In a way, there are

1:11:24 > 1:11:29parallels as well, with that sensitivity to what is happening

1:11:29 > 1:11:33underneath you and having to plan a route and think quickly. Those

1:11:33 > 1:11:37things transfer well, so was a good crossover in some ways. How much

1:11:37 > 1:11:41does your relationship with Lizzy helped? She says you are her best

1:11:41 > 1:11:45friend, but to work together must also help you both perform. It's

1:11:45 > 1:11:50nice to have someone with you who understand everything you're going

1:11:50 > 1:11:54through. If you have a tough gym session together, there is always

1:11:54 > 1:12:00someone to have a cup of tea with and talk about it with, which is

1:12:00 > 1:12:04nice. We push each other in a positive way as well. As soon as we

1:12:04 > 1:12:06step on the track, we are supercompetitive. We both want to

1:12:06 > 1:12:13win. And the fact that we both see ourselves as podium contenders means

1:12:13 > 1:12:18we are constantly pushing each other forward. But we are part of a wider

1:12:18 > 1:12:22team and everybody could bring their A-game on race day. There has been

1:12:22 > 1:12:28so much British success in skeleton at recent Olympics. Have you watched

1:12:28 > 1:12:34while Amy Williams has won her gold medal and a Lizzy Yarnold in 2014?I

1:12:34 > 1:12:37vividly remember sitting and watching Amy do her first two runs

1:12:37 > 1:12:43at Vancouver. And I remember this powerful feeling of thinking, wow,

1:12:43 > 1:12:47I'm in the same programme as this athlete who is leading at the

1:12:47 > 1:12:52Olympics. If she can do it, I can. I have always carried that with me.

1:12:52 > 1:12:55The fact that Lizzy then went on to do the same thing has just

1:12:55 > 1:13:01reinforced that. It is an exciting time for our programme. And what do

1:13:01 > 1:13:06you feel is possible for you?I definitely feel I can win a medal. I

1:13:06 > 1:13:12have beaten every person in that field, so I know if things go right

1:13:12 > 1:13:18and I bring my A game, I can be on the podium.Laura Deas, full of

1:13:18 > 1:13:23confidence and really enjoying herself. Every shot we have seen of

1:13:23 > 1:13:28her, she looks relaxed and excited. She looks to be smiling, but this is

1:13:28 > 1:13:33the serious end of the competition. She is in fourth place. She is 17

1:13:33 > 1:13:39hundredths behind the leader, Loelling. And in third place is the

1:13:39 > 1:13:43defending champion, Lizzy Yarnold. Let's head out to Alpensia because

1:13:43 > 1:13:48Amy Williams is there. It's going to be chilly, but it's a hot night of

1:13:48 > 1:13:55action on the track. What can we expect?Like you say, we can't wait.

1:13:55 > 1:13:58We are going to have two of our British girls fighting for those

1:13:58 > 1:14:07medals, both wanting to win, both wanting gold, silver, bronze. The

1:14:07 > 1:14:09atmosphere including credible. We have loads of supporters behind me.

1:14:09 > 1:14:15I can't wait for the races to start. They haven't had a chance to slide

1:14:15 > 1:14:19on it today, but they have walked the track. What does that tell them

1:14:19 > 1:14:22and what do you expect to see Laura and Lizzy trying to do on their

1:14:22 > 1:14:29third run?To be able to walk the track on the morning of your race is

1:14:29 > 1:14:36a good feeling. You want to be able to look at the ice. It actually just

1:14:36 > 1:14:40calms your nerves. I didn't track walk before my race in Vancouver,

1:14:40 > 1:14:43and it settles you. It is something to do as well, because you have a

1:14:43 > 1:14:48lot of hours to kill before the evening race. So you are going

1:14:48 > 1:14:52through the mental imagery of the track in your head. They have only

1:14:52 > 1:14:55had six runs to learn the track here, so the more times you can go

1:14:55 > 1:15:01through it in your head, shut your eyes and go through every corner. It

1:15:01 > 1:15:06is like replaying your perfect lines in your head.We have seen lots of

1:15:06 > 1:15:11shots of Laura in the warm-up area. She looks fine. Lizzy set a track

1:15:11 > 1:15:14record in her first run yesterday and then looked dizzy and said she

1:15:14 > 1:15:19was short of breath. How is she?

1:15:19 > 1:15:20Back here,

1:15:20 > 1:15:26Back here, she said she was short of rest. And she has a cold. She said

1:15:26 > 1:15:31she found it hard to breathe. She looked fine throughout the run. I

1:15:31 > 1:15:35was watching her eyes, everything was spot on, it was just coming up

1:15:35 > 1:15:39to the finish line that she needed to get her breath back, which is

1:15:39 > 1:15:45fine. The team are happy and confident. Laura is in a good place.

1:15:45 > 1:15:51Yeah, we are looking forward to it so much.Great copper Tichit naked.

1:15:51 > 1:15:56-- competition ahead. We will bring you everything and we will go

1:15:56 > 1:16:01through from

1:16:01 > 1:16:04through from the leader, third will be Lizzy Yarnold, and fourth Laura

1:16:04 > 1:16:09Deas. Alex, you know what it is like. The whole which the

1:16:09 > 1:16:13competition, they want to get on with it.It. Definitely. This is it,

1:16:13 > 1:16:18this is D-Day. This is what they have been working for, the

1:16:18 > 1:16:21combination of four years is now. As luck would have it, we have

1:16:21 > 1:16:25action all the way, they are ready for the short track semifinals,

1:16:25 > 1:16:30three semifinals in the 1500 metres, Charlotte Gilmartin will be in the

1:16:30 > 1:16:34second, and believes Christie will be in the third. Sarah, I love

1:16:34 > 1:16:39asking you, what would you whisper in Elise's if you could?Get the job

1:16:39 > 1:16:44done. She needs to

1:16:44 > 1:16:45in Elise's if you could?Get the job done. She needs to get through

1:16:45 > 1:16:49without incident or problem. She needs to float through and get into

1:16:49 > 1:16:53the final.What would you say to Charlotte Gilmartin?Get in there.

1:16:53 > 1:16:57This is her strength, she loves to race, and she is one step away from

1:16:57 > 1:17:03aching the final. The first of the semifinals.

1:17:03 > 1:17:08COMMENTATOR: They are almost ready to go, just lining up down below us

1:17:08 > 1:17:17on the ice here. Kim Alang has number one position, Kim Boutin

1:17:17 > 1:17:29second. Pierron from France. Marianne St Gelais from Canada

1:17:29 > 1:17:33currently on the outside in second place. St Gelais, the 2016 World

1:17:33 > 1:17:39Champion.

1:17:39 > 1:17:43Champion. Anna Seidel from Germany won the European Championship 1000

1:17:43 > 1:17:51metre bronze medal earlier this year already. 13.5 laps of the track. The

1:17:51 > 1:17:53skaters jostling for position as you

1:18:07 > 1:18:11Kim Boutin, bronze medallist from the 500 metres. Two Canadians at the

1:18:11 > 1:18:17front going around the outside. Marianne St Gelais leading from her

1:18:17 > 1:18:24compatriot Kim Boutin at the moment with Han Yutong of China third. Kim

1:18:24 > 1:18:28Alang of Korea, an Olympic gold medallist in the relay four years

1:18:28 > 1:18:37ago in the white Jersey of Korea in fourth. Seidel of Germany in five.

1:18:37 > 1:18:44Pierron and Valcepina at the back. The crowd warming as the Korean Kim

1:18:44 > 1:18:49goes through and takes the lead. She makes that look very easy. Very

1:18:49 > 1:19:02comfortable. A lap time of 9.2 seconds. Not incredibly fast. She

1:19:02 > 1:19:08comes around the outside. The first two go through to the final. Kim

1:19:08 > 1:19:14Boutin leading the way. Kim Alang in second place with Marianne St Gelais

1:19:14 > 1:19:19third the Canada. Work to do the Han Yutong of Korea. The other two are

1:19:19 > 1:19:24out of it. Sliding out of contention was St Gelais. Amazing that

1:19:24 > 1:19:30Valcepina and also Pierron didn't come into collision with her.

1:19:30 > 1:19:41Leading the way, now trying to catch up Han Yutong. Almost level now. A

1:19:41 > 1:19:48scrap to the line. Kim Boutin in second for Canada. She maintains

1:19:48 > 1:19:55second spot, but the Korean over the line in first place, Kim Alang.

1:19:55 > 1:20:02Boutin in a photo finish. What a disappointment for Marianne St

1:20:02 > 1:20:05Gelais, the 2016 World Champion ended up smacking against the

1:20:05 > 1:20:09padding at the side of the eyes. Interesting to see what the referees

1:20:09 > 1:20:13make of that from Marianne St Gelais. She collided going up the

1:20:13 > 1:20:20straight with Kim Alang. Kim Alang moving around the outside. Kim

1:20:20 > 1:20:24Boutin having a look and letting her come through comfortably as the pace

1:20:24 > 1:20:28increases.

1:20:29 > 1:20:34increases. Seidel going down there. This appointment for her. This is

1:20:34 > 1:20:39where the question really is, is Kim Alang moving inside, protecting the

1:20:39 > 1:20:45inside lane? What will the referee make that? I have seen a lot of

1:20:45 > 1:20:50decisions in the men's racing when the skater, what we used to do when

1:20:50 > 1:20:58I skated, cross track, now it is called blocking, preventing the

1:20:58 > 1:21:03skater. If you change your line, you run the risk of getting a penalty.

1:21:03 > 1:21:08Might there be an issue for Kim Alang? There could very well be. I

1:21:08 > 1:21:13can see the referees talking to one another, looking at that pass of

1:21:13 > 1:21:18Marianne St Gelais moving up the inside. I can see the video referee

1:21:18 > 1:21:24from Holland shaking his head. We will have to see what the official

1:21:24 > 1:21:29result will be.Let's look at it once again. Hopefully, this is the

1:21:29 > 1:21:38key incident. Yes, it is.You can see, Kim Alang, she was very

1:21:38 > 1:21:42fortunate.One of the officials was almost wiped out, and two

1:21:42 > 1:21:48backmarkers could have collided with her.The Canadians having a battle

1:21:48 > 1:21:56here with the Koreans. If this Korean gets a penalty then there

1:21:56 > 1:22:00really will be war on the ice.

1:22:04 > 1:22:12Kim Boutin and Marianne St Gelais, Boutin and Han Yutong in a photo

1:22:12 > 1:22:16finish for second place as it stands. St Gelais also waiting,

1:22:16 > 1:22:22hoping that maybe she might be advanced. That would mean, of

1:22:22 > 1:22:26course, so far, one advantage, they would be seven people in the final.

1:22:26 > 1:22:32Despite talk of around the table and viewing of video evidence, is this

1:22:32 > 1:22:35one position in the end? Yes, the referee makes the final

1:22:35 > 1:22:43call, he can be advised by the video referee, but ultimately, it's down

1:22:43 > 1:22:50to the final referee to make that decision. The chief referee, as it's

1:22:50 > 1:22:55officially known. They are writing something down. So

1:22:55 > 1:23:00it would appear there has been a call, that maybe on St Gelais or

1:23:00 > 1:23:05Kim.What is your feeling?I would have thought the Korean crossed into

1:23:05 > 1:23:09Marianne St Gelais, so I would call that it would go with a penalty to

1:23:09 > 1:23:13Kim.

1:23:18 > 1:23:22And the result is that Marianne St Gelais has been penalised. Kim

1:23:22 > 1:23:31Alang, Kim Boutin both going through.As I already said, the

1:23:31 > 1:23:34angles the referee looks at are completely different to the angles

1:23:34 > 1:23:38we see here and you see at home, the view was on TV. That always makes it

1:23:38 > 1:23:43more difficult. They should look at that, so we can see what they are

1:23:43 > 1:23:48making the decision on. Charlotte Gilmartin for Great Britain, Suzanne

1:23:48 > 1:23:52Schulting on the right-hand side of the screen, Fontana from Italy, the

1:23:52 > 1:24:00Olympic 500 metre champion. Ter Mors has already won a medal here. Deanna

1:24:00 > 1:24:06Lockett for Australia, Charlotte Gilmartin from Worcestershire and

1:24:06 > 1:24:12Kikuchi from Japan. If Lockett of Australia wants to make anything of

1:24:12 > 1:24:17this race, in fifth place at the moment, she needs to make the race

1:24:17 > 1:24:21as quickly as possible, because she is not good leaving it to the last

1:24:21 > 1:24:263-4 laps when high-speed kicks in. Schulting of the Netherlands and Ter

1:24:26 > 1:24:30Mors in one and two.The difference between the pair of them is in the

1:24:30 > 1:24:38helmet, the orange one for Suzanne Schulting. Ter Mors, who was so

1:24:38 > 1:24:41impressive on the oval across the Plaza the other night still looking

1:24:41 > 1:24:47for an Olympic medal in short track. She has twice finished fourth.

1:24:47 > 1:24:51Charlotte Gilmartin in second place in behind the very much informed

1:24:51 > 1:24:58figure of Ariana Fontana. Fontana a six time Olympic medallist finally

1:24:58 > 1:25:02getting a gold the other day. Going to the front is Ter Mors with 8.5

1:25:02 > 1:25:08laps to go.Ter Mors, of course, doesn't like the argy-bargy. She

1:25:08 > 1:25:12prefers long track speed skating. She proved her fitness is good, so

1:25:12 > 1:25:16she will try to do negative splits, every lap getting quicker. The last

1:25:16 > 1:25:23lap was 10.3.Gilmartin with work to do with seven laps to go, but still

1:25:23 > 1:25:27in the group is Ter Mors... O! Down she goes again! Charlotte Gilmartin

1:25:27 > 1:25:34has crashed out as she did in the heats of the 500 metres. But she's

1:25:34 > 1:25:39back on her skates and back up and running on the ice, but a lap behind

1:25:39 > 1:25:44everybody else. Meanwhile at the front, Ter Mors. Ter Mors on the

1:25:44 > 1:25:53front ahead of Fontana, Schulting in third place. Bringing up the rear is

1:25:53 > 1:26:00Kikuchi of Japan. We are going to see Ter Mors move through again into

1:26:00 > 1:26:03first place with relapsed to go. We have to wait and see what happens

1:26:03 > 1:26:08here. Schulting tried to go into the back of Fontana.Fontana wasn't

1:26:08 > 1:26:12about to give way. Ter Mors leads the way on the front. Fontana in

1:26:12 > 1:26:18second place, Lockett trying to make a challenge, but she goes wide. Ter

1:26:18 > 1:26:22Mors of the Netherlands leads. Fontana in second place. Kikuchi

1:26:22 > 1:26:30challenging in third. The first two over the line, Ter Mors and Arianna

1:26:30 > 1:26:35Fontana. Deanna Lockett of Australia crashed just going into the final

1:26:35 > 1:26:37bend, and unfortunately, the Queensland unable to challenge for a

1:26:37 > 1:26:44place in the final. That was superb skating by Arianna Fontana. She has

1:26:44 > 1:26:50got one gold in the pocket. Ter Mors has another gold in the pocket, two

1:26:50 > 1:26:59gold medallists going through to the final. We have A and B finals. It

1:26:59 > 1:27:04determines the final placing. This is the second semifinal, and

1:27:04 > 1:27:08Charlotte Gilmartin.I couldn't see what happened there. Schulting

1:27:08 > 1:27:14trying to come up the inside.

1:27:14 > 1:27:17trying to come up the inside. The Italian completely blocking her out.

1:27:17 > 1:27:22We have to weight, still, for the official result there.Arianna

1:27:22 > 1:27:29Fontana finished with the bronze medal in this event in Sochi. This

1:27:29 > 1:27:36was the end of the race for Lockett from Australia. Disappointment for

1:27:36 > 1:27:41Charlotte Gilmartin, though. Crashed out of her other event as well.

1:27:41 > 1:27:45Yeah, incredibly disappointing. As I said, had she finished second in the

1:27:45 > 1:27:49race, might have meant that she would have gone into another

1:27:49 > 1:27:55semifinal, which could have been a little bit easier.Once more, the

1:27:55 > 1:28:03judges deliberating. Hopefully, not for too long. Next onto the track

1:28:03 > 1:28:06will be the final of the semifinals, the last one featuring Elise

1:28:06 > 1:28:16Christie.The move from Fontana, she just moves across, we have to weight

1:28:16 > 1:28:25for the official result, of course. So, Ter Mors and Fontana are

1:28:25 > 1:28:31qualifying for the semi... From the semifinal. Confirmation of the

1:28:31 > 1:28:43result. Kikuchi and Schulting into the B finals. Here we go.

1:28:43 > 1:28:47Elise Christie needs to finish in the first two to get into the

1:28:47 > 1:28:52Olympic final. Choi Minjeong, the world record-holder, seven time

1:28:52 > 1:29:04World Championship gold medallist on the inside. Petra Jaszapati. Valerie

1:29:04 > 1:29:11Maltais from Canada. What will Christie do here? Will she adapt the

1:29:11 > 1:29:15same tactics as she did in the first round, not doing very much, and

1:29:15 > 1:29:20leave it for a final burst of speed at the end? I'm fairly convinced,

1:29:20 > 1:29:23looking at the field, there's no real specialist 1500 metres gators

1:29:23 > 1:29:28in this race. That is horribly the tactics, the race plan, what she

1:29:28 > 1:29:39will adapt to. Choi sat behind Christian fifth, China one and two.

1:29:39 > 1:29:45In the first race of the day, Christie was confident enough in her

1:29:45 > 1:29:49speed to bite her time early on in the laps, which is what she has done

1:29:49 > 1:29:53initially here. Moving up a little bit now. Moving in front of Valerie

1:29:53 > 1:29:59Maltais into second place. We have Li Jinyu and Zhou Yang of China at

1:29:59 > 1:30:02the front at the moment with Christie in third. She has got to

1:30:02 > 1:30:08finish in the first two here. Just moves into second place behind Li

1:30:08 > 1:30:13Jinyu, world bronze medallist in the junior championship last year. Tight

1:30:13 > 1:30:17up the front, not too much room there. Two Chinese athletes continue

1:30:17 > 1:30:22to dominate up until now.Christie skating and ice lines into the turn.

1:30:22 > 1:30:29Not going in too tight, squeezed onto the first block, that happened

1:30:29 > 1:30:35in the first final. Looking comfortable. Multi tries to attack

1:30:35 > 1:30:40around the outside.Making a move around the outside. Christie looking

1:30:40 > 1:30:47boxed in as multi makes a move. Multi, Zou, Leigh and Christie with

1:30:47 > 1:30:53four laps to go. At the front, Valerie Maltais, sixth in Sochi in

1:30:53 > 1:30:592014. She has a gap here, multi. Christie has a little bit of work to

1:30:59 > 1:31:03do now, as Choi Minjeong goes around the outside. Choi goes towards the

1:31:03 > 1:31:07front. Christie comes through on the inside, good move from her, two that

1:31:07 > 1:31:16is to go, Christie and Choi neck. Christie doesn't want to crash

1:31:16 > 1:31:16is to go, Christie and Choi neck. Christie doesn't want to crash. Choi

1:31:16 > 1:31:22Minjeong leads the way. Zhou Yang and Christie as they go round the

1:31:22 > 1:31:30front. Christie has crashed again now! Right on the final bend yet

1:31:30 > 1:31:35again. She ends up in a distraught heap on the floor. She was almost

1:31:35 > 1:31:40there. She was almost about to qualify. She could see the line in

1:31:40 > 1:31:46front of her and, once more, Elise Christie, this time tangling with

1:31:46 > 1:31:50one of the Chinese athletes ends up on the deck against the padding at

1:31:50 > 1:32:00the side of the track. Choi Minjeong qualifies first. Petra Jaszapati,

1:32:00 > 1:32:07the defending limply and champion.

1:32:07 > 1:32:10And unfortunately and sadly from a British point of view, Elise

1:32:10 > 1:32:17Christie is on the ground and hasn't crossed the line.My heart goes out

1:32:17 > 1:32:28to this young lady. She skated a fantastic race. You Seou

1:32:30 > 1:32:34fantastic race. You Seou -- you see Choi steaming around the outside. A

1:32:34 > 1:32:43collision. It appeared as if Li might have cut her blade into

1:32:43 > 1:32:49Christie's cut resistant racing suit on the inner side of the right

1:32:49 > 1:32:58skate. An awful disaster. You can see it again. Which it looks like

1:32:58 > 1:33:03she might be taken off by stretcher from the pictures on the ice. A

1:33:03 > 1:33:09disaster here for Elise Christie. What terrible pictures for the

1:33:09 > 1:33:16second time in a few days. She finishes on the floor, the world

1:33:16 > 1:33:20champion down. But hopefully in terms of these Olympic Games, not

1:33:20 > 1:33:25out. Hopefully, she will be able to pick herself up and go and try again

1:33:25 > 1:33:33in her favourite event, the 1000m. You see her coming around the

1:33:33 > 1:33:39outside. We only see the angle here and whether she passed Li of China.

1:33:39 > 1:33:46She has clearly not passed her. Maybe the knock on the left shoulder

1:33:46 > 1:33:55on Li causes her to go down. We need to go back a bit. She clearly takes

1:33:55 > 1:34:01Christie out. But the big question is, is Elise in front of Li at this

1:34:01 > 1:34:08point?The other question is, hopefully she is not badly injured,

1:34:08 > 1:34:13either from the impact of the crash or from the blade of the Chinese

1:34:13 > 1:34:16skater. It goes without saying that you can do a lot of damage with

1:34:16 > 1:34:23those blades. They are extremely sharp. We are waiting for the final

1:34:23 > 1:34:29decision.Quite a hush. It is the quietest this arena has been the

1:34:29 > 1:34:36whole time. You can't see Elise Christie, but we will give you an

1:34:36 > 1:34:40update. She is still on the ice. The stretcher is there. They are still

1:34:40 > 1:34:45pending to her, but she is out of our line of vision at the moment. We

1:34:45 > 1:34:50can't quite see. Elise Christie is now being placed on a stretcher. And

1:34:50 > 1:34:57while the judges reach their conclusions on that semifinal, Elise

1:34:57 > 1:35:05Christie Yan Valery Maltais have received a penalty.

1:35:07 > 1:35:10Unfortunately, the sad sight here in the Gangneung Ice Arena which we are

1:35:10 > 1:35:13watching from the commentary box is of a stretcher being wheeled from

1:35:13 > 1:35:18the arena with Elise Christie laying on top of it. They are the

1:35:18 > 1:35:25qualifiers for the A final and unfortunately, the world champion is

1:35:25 > 1:35:29not among those who will race for gold later today.

1:35:29 > 1:35:37CLARE BALDING: That is desperately sad for Elise Christie. She has been

1:35:37 > 1:35:41penalised in that semifinal. There is always half eight chance in short

1:35:41 > 1:35:45track speed skating that you might get advanced to the final, but far

1:35:45 > 1:35:47more seriously than whether she is in the final is how badly she is

1:35:47 > 1:35:54injured. Sarah Lindsay and Jon Eley are looking at these shots with me.

1:35:54 > 1:36:00We know this is a tough and unpredictable sport, but she has had

1:36:00 > 1:36:04a rougher end of the draw in two Olympic Games so far than with have

1:36:04 > 1:36:11ever seen.It is difficult for her. We talk about it being part of the

1:36:11 > 1:36:15sport, but for someone to have that much bad luck is just heartbreaking.

1:36:15 > 1:36:19But again, we always talk about her coming back and her ability to get

1:36:19 > 1:36:23back on the track and race. Today around a corner, she just left

1:36:23 > 1:36:27herself a bit too much to do and the referee saw her as impeding the

1:36:27 > 1:36:31Chinese girl on the last corner. So it is a tough call, but I can see

1:36:31 > 1:36:34why the referee made that decision. But as we all feel so passionately

1:36:34 > 1:36:41about Elise, it is tough for her to take.Sarah, your immediate reaction

1:36:41 > 1:36:47was that it was not her fault, but she is not clear, is she?The

1:36:47 > 1:36:55Chinese falls and takes Elise down so doesn't look like the Chinesego's

1:36:55 > 1:37:02fault at first glance. Elise has just left too much to the end. It is

1:37:02 > 1:37:06all down to the finish. On the one hand, she was relaxed and confident

1:37:06 > 1:37:09and she knew she had the speed at the end and she let the skaters

1:37:09 > 1:37:15battle it out.But from that angle, it looks as if Li Jinyu brings her

1:37:15 > 1:37:23skate across and trips her up.She does have to skate, though. And Li

1:37:23 > 1:37:31is off-balance. Elise is trying to turn around the corner, so that

1:37:31 > 1:37:34point, Elise has clearly not done it on purpose. She is trying to get in

1:37:34 > 1:37:40front of Li, but she unfortunately left it too late and Li goes down.

1:37:40 > 1:37:46The most important thing now is that hopefully, she is in good health.

1:37:46 > 1:37:50Absolutely. In your mind, what a fair decision from the referees?

1:37:50 > 1:37:58Very much so. It is just that we are so passionately behind Elise that

1:37:58 > 1:38:01every call that is against her, we think negatively, but actually, the

1:38:01 > 1:38:07referee made the right decision. On the last shot weasel, it looked as

1:38:07 > 1:38:13if Li Jinyu's blade striker on the bridge -- on the last shot weasel.

1:38:13 > 1:38:17She is going to feel desperate, but hopefully in terms of injury, it

1:38:17 > 1:38:21depends whether blade made contact. How much support and protection is

1:38:21 > 1:38:26there on the shin?I don't think it was from the blade. When she held

1:38:26 > 1:38:36her ankle when she first tried to sit up, you are wearing cut proof

1:38:36 > 1:38:41suits.Well luckily, in the sport of skeleton, you are not having to deal

1:38:41 > 1:38:45with anyone else on the track at the same time. Alex Coomber is now going

1:38:45 > 1:38:48to be discussing the third run of the skeleton, the situation at the

1:38:48 > 1:38:52halfway stage is that Laura Deas is in fourth place. Lizzy Yarnold in

1:38:52 > 1:38:57third. We will see their third run in just a second.

1:39:01 > 1:39:08Laura Deas, one of the fastest in the field.

1:39:08 > 1:39:18the field. It's down to you in that moment. There's nobody else. I love

1:39:18 > 1:39:25this sport. I'm in it because I want to win.

1:39:32 > 1:39:35Never in the history of the Winter Olympics have two British athletes

1:39:35 > 1:39:41been on the podium in two positions in the top three, but we have a

1:39:41 > 1:39:45situation here where it may just happen. Jacqueline Loelling with the

1:39:45 > 1:39:50way for Germany ahead of Janine Flock. And just one tenth behind the

1:39:50 > 1:39:52leader is the defending champion Lizzy Yarnold. And seven hundredths

1:39:52 > 1:40:00behind her is Laura Deas. This Alpensia Sliding Centre takes an

1:40:00 > 1:40:07awful lot of driving and Alex, it needs quick thinking as well as good

1:40:07 > 1:40:12technique?-Ness. Everything is coming at you so fast, you don't

1:40:12 > 1:40:16have time to think. If you are thinking, I don't know what I'm

1:40:16 > 1:40:21going to do, that will cause disaster. That is why you track walk

1:40:21 > 1:40:24and that is why you see them thinking about their runs in their

1:40:24 > 1:40:29heads.They will have walked the track this morning. Lizzy Yarnold is

1:40:29 > 1:40:33in third place, but she was the fastest on the first run and Laura

1:40:33 > 1:40:39Deas was second fastest on the second run. They could move up.

1:40:39 > 1:40:42Let's find out what happened in round three. Commentary comes from

1:40:42 > 1:40:49Amy Williams, John Jackson and first, John Hunt.

1:40:49 > 1:40:52Welcome to the sliding centre ahead of round three of women's skeleton,

1:40:52 > 1:40:57everybody trying to get the best view in the house. Round three goes

1:40:57 > 1:41:03from the leaders down, one to 20. Ready to go, Jacqueline Loelling.

1:41:03 > 1:41:08Second place at the moment, Janine Flock of Australia. Lizzy Yarnold,

1:41:08 > 1:41:13the defending champion, goes third, and Laura Deas is in fourth place.

1:41:13 > 1:41:19John Jackson, double Olympian, and Amy Williams are with us in the

1:41:19 > 1:41:24commentary box. John Jackson, what is the news on temperatures? The ice

1:41:24 > 1:41:27temperature is -8, which is good for the British equipment. Anything

1:41:27 > 1:41:33below -6 and the British men and women have been flying, so that is a

1:41:33 > 1:41:39good start.Look at that study of concentration on Jacqueline Loelling

1:41:39 > 1:41:45my face. She admitted after her two runs yesterday that she was very

1:41:45 > 1:41:49nervous. This is the young German who has dominated this event is at

1:41:49 > 1:41:55the last two years. She leads by just a fraction, two hundredths of a

1:41:55 > 1:42:01second, ahead of

1:42:01 > 1:42:07second, ahead of Flock. She is one of the slowest starters. Her best

1:42:07 > 1:42:12start has been 5.34 in the early rounds. Loelling is under way. And

1:42:12 > 1:42:16she is slow again. But John Jackson, she has a happy habit of making up

1:42:16 > 1:42:23good speed through the run.She is one of the most consistent sliders

1:42:23 > 1:42:28we have. She has won four World Cup races this year. But is that start

1:42:28 > 1:42:34going to be her Achilles' heel when it comes to the medals? I think the

1:42:34 > 1:42:39girls that out start her could go faster. But she did not make one

1:42:39 > 1:42:42mistake yesterday, but is that the mistake that will allow the other

1:42:42 > 1:42:50girls to move up, especially the British girls behind her? But she

1:42:50 > 1:43:00has been the best slider so far. Time is going to be important.

1:43:02 > 1:43:04Time is going to be important. 52.04 is OK, but only average when you

1:43:04 > 1:43:08bear in mind what so many of the girls did in run the ball one. The

1:43:08 > 1:43:13track seemed to slow down in one number two yesterday, Aimee, that is

1:43:13 > 1:43:19not a time the other girls should be worried about. It's to say. After

1:43:19 > 1:43:23the first run, you can see if it is a good or bad track. I think she

1:43:23 > 1:43:28will be a bit disappointed with that because she did do fast yesterday.

1:43:28 > 1:43:34But she did take a big hit in the crucial part of the track, exit

1:43:34 > 1:43:42nine. That would have bled speed from her.And yesterday, she was

1:43:42 > 1:43:49seventh off, which allows you time to settle.Second place, Austria's

1:43:49 > 1:43:53Janine Flock. Austria have never won a medal in this. Flock seems to be

1:43:53 > 1:43:58near her best. She was former world number one in 2015. Now she has a

1:43:58 > 1:44:05much quicker start.

1:44:10 > 1:44:13She probably has nerves in her legs, increasing the tension. When she

1:44:13 > 1:44:19gets it right, she flies. On her first run yesterday, she hit the

1:44:19 > 1:44:25wall coming out of nine. Then she had a great second run. It is about

1:44:25 > 1:44:32getting the steers in the right place, minimising the oscillations.

1:44:32 > 1:44:37Way better, that was good from Janine. She really wants an Olympic

1:44:37 > 1:44:42medal.

1:44:43 > 1:44:51medal.Two bends to go for Flock. And she has finished ahead of

1:44:51 > 1:44:56Loelling. She is a tenth of a second ahead. Janine Flock for Austria

1:44:56 > 1:45:02giving it everything. That is her coach, who was my coat in Vancouver.

1:45:02 > 1:45:10He will be thrilled. He wants another medal. That was a good run

1:45:10 > 1:45:14for Janine. I am happy for her. She is a good buddy of mine, trains

1:45:14 > 1:45:22really hard in Austria.

1:45:22 > 1:45:25really hard in Austria. That was her going through corner two, a crucial

1:45:25 > 1:45:30corner as there is a flat section afterwards. You could see her using

1:45:30 > 1:45:38her body and legs to steer. She is in great shape. Lots of British fans

1:45:38 > 1:45:45here. And a key five minutes coming up for the Britons. Lizzy Yarnold,

1:45:45 > 1:45:51the Olympic champion from Sochi, goes third, starting this third run

1:45:51 > 1:45:57a tenth of a second off the lead as was, Loelling. We are looking for a

1:45:57 > 1:46:02start time

1:46:03 > 1:46:08start time of sub 520. Decent start, John Jackson. She made mistakes on

1:46:08 > 1:46:12her second run yesterday, which is why she is now behind. She had the

1:46:12 > 1:46:16lead after the first run. If she puts in a big one here, she will be

1:46:16 > 1:46:23in the lead at the bottom. Her run yesterday was phenomenal. She made

1:46:23 > 1:46:30mistakes on the second run, but now she has got through that part OK.

1:46:30 > 1:46:35That is not bad.

1:46:37 > 1:46:40That is not bad. She is keeping herself in the mix with the Austrian

1:46:40 > 1:46:48slider.There is not going to be much between them. Did that tap on

1:46:48 > 1:46:54ten cost her some speed? Only a bit. Yarnold is two hundredths off the

1:46:54 > 1:47:03lead. She has moved ahead of Loelling. She was lucky. When she

1:47:03 > 1:47:08took that hit, it was parallel, so her sled wasn't skidding into it.

1:47:08 > 1:47:15She continued straight into corner 12, so it didn't cost her much time.

1:47:15 > 1:47:21That line into corner Twell, if you get it right, if you get it right,

1:47:21 > 1:47:26you can use the pressure. The line into 12 pushes you round the g-force

1:47:26 > 1:47:30to create speed. You can see the differences between the two leaders,

1:47:30 > 1:47:35separated by a couple of hundred. Slightly different lines, and that's

1:47:35 > 1:47:41why Lizzy lost out.

1:47:41 > 1:47:49From Lizzy Yarnold to Laura Deas, starting this third run in fourth

1:47:49 > 1:47:58place. She has probably been the most consistent in terms of time

1:47:58 > 1:48:02wise of all of these athletes over the first two runs. And again, a

1:48:02 > 1:48:12fast starter. We are looking for 5.10 as a start. She is away nicely.

1:48:12 > 1:48:18She is so strong, so powerful, her background is in question is, but do

1:48:18 > 1:48:24you know what, she trained so hard in the gym. -- background is

1:48:24 > 1:48:29equestrian. A fast start on this unique track. Let's see what Laura

1:48:29 > 1:48:35can do, can she work with the track? Can she find speed in every one of

1:48:35 > 1:48:39these corners? Brilliant from her there. She nailed it. That has been

1:48:39 > 1:48:44the best we have seen. She didn't get it quite right yesterday, but

1:48:44 > 1:48:49she got it back on run two.Speed dropping off slightly relative to

1:48:49 > 1:48:54Flock. Flock, Yarnold, Laura Deas not separated by Matt on the line.

1:48:54 > 1:49:02Speed did drop off rapidly, Laura Deas. Laura stays in fourth place.

1:49:02 > 1:49:10She is 19 hundredths of the leader, Janine Flock. A significant five

1:49:10 > 1:49:16minutes, highly significant. Laura Deas has done fine, the quickest run

1:49:16 > 1:49:23of her three, and Flock leads from Yarnold, Loelling, Laura Deas in

1:49:23 > 1:49:26fourth place. Heading into the fourth and deciding run.I was

1:49:26 > 1:49:31surprised she dropped that file below. There, that is probably it.

1:49:31 > 1:49:36She definitely had the best exit of nine. The clip into the corner there

1:49:36 > 1:49:41has to have been the reason for taking away the speed and giving her

1:49:41 > 1:49:47a slightly lower time. With a start like that, if she can clear it up on

1:49:47 > 1:49:52her second run, the fourth and final of the race.Anna Fernstadt goes

1:49:52 > 1:49:58fifth for Germany, and Olympic debutant. She is so young, just 21.

1:49:58 > 1:50:05Fernstadt, like Loelling, is not a good starter. She is slower

1:50:05 > 1:50:08Fernstadt, like Loelling, is not a good starter. She is slower.

1:50:08 > 1:50:13Fernstadt has put herself under pressure to close on the front four.

1:50:13 > 1:50:16The difference between a fast and slow start, with a fast start, you

1:50:16 > 1:50:23can make little errors. Not big ones, when you have a slow start

1:50:23 > 1:50:27like the Germans, you have to be perfect everywhere. What the Germans

1:50:27 > 1:50:31are good at doing, because they build speed, you can see how quick

1:50:31 > 1:50:38they are at the bottom of the track. You can't hear her as much, and that

1:50:38 > 1:50:42is why Laura lost speed, because you can see the g-force. She is not

1:50:42 > 1:50:54really gaining. So it is not working.Offer the 14th bend, she is

1:50:54 > 1:50:58breathing down Laura Deas's neck for fourth place. She found some impetus

1:50:58 > 1:51:04late there. She did. The lines at the bottom of the track, she is

1:51:04 > 1:51:09finding speed all the time, building and building. If she had the same

1:51:09 > 1:51:14start as Laura Deas, she would win the competition by 3AW4-mac tenths,

1:51:14 > 1:51:15easily.

1:51:18 > 1:51:23Her line is perfect. The best line we have seen out of nine. She did

1:51:23 > 1:51:30clink and have a skid. I think that was actually the finish. The slides

1:51:30 > 1:51:36are being weighed, there is a maximum and minimum they can all be.

1:51:36 > 1:51:39Fernstadt has improved her position. Next, going six, another German,

1:51:39 > 1:51:48Tina Hermann. Her debut Olympics as well. She is 25, world ranked number

1:51:48 > 1:51:53two. She has been ranked in the top three in skeleton for the last four

1:51:53 > 1:51:57years. That tells you all you need to know about her ability and

1:51:57 > 1:52:03consistency. Herrmann has had an identical start so far, 5.2 four.

1:52:03 > 1:52:08She is wondering left a little bit, which is a tiny bit slower.

1:52:08 > 1:52:13Struggling to get the perfect line she wanted. She is an incredible

1:52:13 > 1:52:18driver. I did expect her to be further up the field, but she did

1:52:18 > 1:52:22not have the best day yesterday. Let's see what she can do today, day

1:52:22 > 1:52:27two, runs three and four. She will have thought about it overnight.

1:52:27 > 1:52:32Throughout training runs, you have videos on entrances and exits, and

1:52:32 > 1:52:37you go home and study them, see the perfect line, and watch other

1:52:37 > 1:52:43sliders. On race day, you just have to go out and do it.Herrmann, then,

1:52:43 > 1:52:48can she close like Fernstadt did? A remarkable finish by Fernstadt.

1:52:48 > 1:52:53Herrmann now crosses the line. She has closed a little bit of the

1:52:53 > 1:53:00deficit as well to go a tenth behind Fernstadt. Those two Germans,

1:53:00 > 1:53:06Fernstadt and Herrmann, they have kept pressure on Laura

1:53:06 > 1:53:11Fernstadt and Herrmann, they have kept pressure on Laura.

1:53:11 > 1:53:13kept pressure on Laura. Fernstadt and Herman have kept themselves

1:53:13 > 1:53:17alive.The fastest run of the heat so far. She has picked up her game

1:53:17 > 1:53:25from yesterday. Will she be able to close in on the likes of Lizzy

1:53:25 > 1:53:30Yarnold, Flock and Loelling as they come into the fourth and final run?

1:53:30 > 1:53:37It is exciting heading into run free, even more so now. -- run

1:53:37 > 1:53:44three. Good crowd again tonight. We now move on to the Latvian, that is

1:53:44 > 1:53:51Lelde Priedulena. Can she find a stunning run? By that, I mean a

1:53:51 > 1:53:58comfortable sub 52 second run. She might just apply pressure. If she

1:53:58 > 1:54:03can't find it, I would have thought that is probably her chances of a

1:54:03 > 1:54:09medal gone. Fast starter usually, but not as quick this time.Everyone

1:54:09 > 1:54:12starts a little bit slower. Sometimes the eyes can be sticky at

1:54:12 > 1:54:18the top of the run, and maybe sleds aren't moving as freely in that cut

1:54:18 > 1:54:25out that they slot into at the start.11th in the world,

1:54:25 > 1:54:30Priedulena. Carrying a knee injury, and carrying it effectively.Also,

1:54:30 > 1:54:37this is day two, and we don't usually have these corporate -- on

1:54:37 > 1:54:42petitions over two days. Her run is looking really, really good. It is

1:54:42 > 1:54:47maybe the equipment is not working for her in these conditions.Final

1:54:47 > 1:54:50couple of bends for Priedulena. Let's see how close she can get to

1:54:50 > 1:54:56the 52 second Mark.

1:54:57 > 1:54:59the 52 second Mark. Priedulena doesn't improve her position. She

1:54:59 > 1:55:06has now dropped fully half a second off the medals. You would think, in

1:55:06 > 1:55:11terms of the medal chase, that is it for her. Sliding pretty well still.

1:55:11 > 1:55:15That was her quickest run of the three. That is all you can ask for,

1:55:15 > 1:55:21improve run on run, get a PB each time you go down. Watching her at

1:55:21 > 1:55:27the start loading onto the sled. Each sled is individual to each

1:55:27 > 1:55:31athlete. The saddle is moulded to their body and fits perfectly. A

1:55:31 > 1:55:37really good line there.

1:55:38 > 1:55:40really good line there.Priedulena for Latvia in seventh place.

1:55:40 > 1:55:48Canadian flag is now out for Elisabeth Vathje. By her own

1:55:48 > 1:55:52admission, she blamed herself fairly and squarely for a messy first run,

1:55:52 > 1:55:57such a good second run. She was the quickest of all in heat two. World

1:55:57 > 1:56:04number three, she comes in to the Olympic Games as one of the

1:56:04 > 1:56:11favourites to do really, really well. Vathje with a point to prove.

1:56:11 > 1:56:17That is the slowest start of her three.Yesterday, she made a mistake

1:56:17 > 1:56:24on the first run.

1:56:24 > 1:56:27on the first run. Her balance point was out all the way down. On the

1:56:27 > 1:56:30second, she got on the sled very high on the fighting the sled

1:56:30 > 1:56:35through seven. On the second run yesterday, she had the fastest run

1:56:35 > 1:56:39of everybody yesterday. This is the run where she needs to move forward.

1:56:39 > 1:56:46The mistake at seven will cost her possibly, but I don't think she will

1:56:46 > 1:56:51be able to move up towards the Germans.52.01 yesterday, uphill to

1:56:51 > 1:57:02the finish now. Will she get near that? No. 52.3 seven.

1:57:02 > 1:57:05that? No. 52.3 seven. Disappointment to merely sinful run two. Back to

1:57:05 > 1:57:12disappointment for Vathje. It clearly will not happen. She is a

1:57:12 > 1:57:16second of the medals. It hasn't quite clicked with her. She is

1:57:16 > 1:57:21getting it sometimes. Other times, she isn't. You have to go for

1:57:21 > 1:57:27consistent runs to be in with a medal hope. Really good lines there.

1:57:27 > 1:57:31Just, just get away with it. Sometimes on this track, we are

1:57:31 > 1:57:34talking centimetres to the left or to the right to completely ruin your

1:57:34 > 1:57:42race.Vathje is going to struggle. And obviously, we're now heading

1:57:42 > 1:57:47towards the bottom half of the leaderboard, so there will be no

1:57:47 > 1:57:52change to the top end with Flock leading by a whisker from Yarnold,

1:57:52 > 1:58:00the defending champion. Loelling and Laura Deas. Kimberley Bosch showed

1:58:00 > 1:58:03last March that she knows the track. She was an excellent third in the

1:58:03 > 1:58:10World Cup, usually quick away, looking for 513, she gets 517.

1:58:10 > 1:58:16Consistent of the blocks. Very good start from her. Anything that is

1:58:16 > 1:58:22above 520 is a good start. She is not quite as experienced as other

1:58:22 > 1:58:26riders. It takes a lot of years to learn how to slide and feel it

1:58:26 > 1:58:31through the sled, how to become one being, you and yours sled, to work

1:58:31 > 1:58:37together and not fight each other as you go down the track. She is not

1:58:37 > 1:58:42finding the speed. The lines are really good, but it seems to be

1:58:42 > 1:58:52taking away. She is over driving the sled.Looking at her, she might be a

1:58:52 > 1:58:58chipping ahead of Vathje. She does. Kimberley Bos improves on her

1:58:58 > 1:59:07position.For a slide of her sort of training age, if you like, and her

1:59:07 > 1:59:10development, if she finished top eight in the world, that would be a

1:59:10 > 1:59:14great result. Not every single one of these athletes is aiming for the

1:59:14 > 1:59:18medals if they know it is completely out of their reach. For them, they

1:59:18 > 1:59:23might be after a top ten. They might be after a top eight, personally,

1:59:23 > 1:59:28for their funding back home, they might need a top ten, 12 top eight.

1:59:28 > 1:59:33This could be what she is aiming for, and could be the result she is

1:59:33 > 1:59:44aiming for in her mind. We move on now to the Swiss, Marina

1:59:44 > 1:59:50Gilardoni, wonderfully consistent. I think there will be a lot of people

1:59:50 > 1:59:54in the skeleton world who would be really pleased for her if she could

1:59:54 > 1:59:59maintain a top ten position through until the end here. She is 30 now.

1:59:59 > 2:00:05She was ranked as high as number five a couple of years ago. That was

2:00:05 > 2:00:08the year she was fourth in the World Championships. She has slipped to

2:00:08 > 2:00:12world number 16, but she is really, really consistent. Slightly slower

2:00:12 > 2:00:18start than we are used to with her, 528, it puts her on the back foot.

2:00:18 > 2:00:23It drops her from yesterday. I am wondering if she has been recovering

2:00:23 > 2:00:27from a hamstring injury most of the season, I wonder if that is

2:00:27 > 2:00:30affecting her from yesterday, so she is pushing hard when she didn't run

2:00:30 > 2:00:35as fast which is why she dropped off at the start. Her runs were good

2:00:35 > 2:00:40yesterday. When she was doing well, she was one of the top sliders. Now

2:00:40 > 2:00:44she is not starting at the front, you can see where her driving isn't

2:00:44 > 2:00:48quite where it needs to be to have the same effect as what the Germans

2:00:48 > 2:00:54are doing and pulling up the field. It is just little mistakes here and

2:00:54 > 2:00:58there.I don't think this will improve Gilardoni's position.

2:01:08 > 2:01:21We are halfway through run number one. Flock leads narrowly.

2:01:25 > 2:01:30You can see her going through the track in her head, through her body,

2:01:30 > 2:01:33that visualisation where you can shut your eyes and go through any

2:01:33 > 2:01:42track in the world because it is so much in that mental imagery.

2:01:43 > 2:01:47Confirmation of Flock's narrow lead over Lizzy Yarnold. So close. That

2:01:47 > 2:01:52leaderboard will not change now as we move into the second half of the

2:01:52 > 2:02:03standings. Unbelievable view across to the ski jump. Jane Channell is

2:02:03 > 2:02:08about the fastest starter here. She has been electric off the blocks,

2:02:08 > 2:02:16but she has been losing it down the bottom end of the track.Terrific

2:02:16 > 2:02:24speed to carry her through the top portion of the track.

2:02:24 > 2:02:27portion of the track. Normally, she would be starting to go green, but

2:02:27 > 2:02:31because of her style, maybe this track is in connecting with the

2:02:31 > 2:02:35Canadians because they are not doing as well as they should. She is

2:02:35 > 2:02:39currently ranked fifth in the world. You don't expect to see sliders of

2:02:39 > 2:02:43that calibre this far back in the pack. So something is not

2:02:43 > 2:02:46connecting. You can hear a lot of noise and that is her helmet

2:02:46 > 2:02:54scraping against the ice.

2:02:54 > 2:02:56scraping against the ice.She has a small chance of nipping into the top

2:02:56 > 2:03:06ten. But her speed has fallen away again. She stays in 11.She will be

2:03:06 > 2:03:09disappointed with that. When you are ranked fifth in the world going into

2:03:09 > 2:03:17the Olympics, that means she has had podiums.

2:03:17 > 2:03:23podiums. She was second place in Whistler. And she has always been

2:03:23 > 2:03:28around that kind of placing. So to not get into the top ten, she would

2:03:28 > 2:03:31definitely want to have her fourth and final run to make sure she is in

2:03:31 > 2:03:39the top ten. A bit of a clip there. She needs to have steered harder as

2:03:39 > 2:03:45she enters corner 12. Those lines on your screen need to be as flat as

2:03:45 > 2:03:49possible. You don't want the highs and the lows as that is a longer

2:03:49 > 2:03:57journey around each corner. It's not going to happen at the fourth

2:03:57 > 2:04:02Olympics for America's Katie Uhlaender. She was fourth in Sochi,

2:04:02 > 2:04:09only 400s of that bronze medal -- only four hundredths off that bronze

2:04:09 > 2:04:15medal. She was in tears earlier as to how her Olympics has gone, in the

2:04:15 > 2:04:19full knowledge that this will probably be her last one.Her

2:04:19 > 2:04:24training runs at the beginning of the week, she was really quick. She

2:04:24 > 2:04:30was up there with the likes of Lizzy and Laura. You thought maybe this

2:04:30 > 2:04:35would be her year, and it hasn't happened, for whatever reason.

2:04:35 > 2:04:43Whether she got the setup wrong yesterday... She said the ice has

2:04:43 > 2:04:50been good for her, but something has not quite settled. Again, there were

2:04:50 > 2:05:00no big mistakes, she's just losing speed all the way the track.

2:05:00 > 2:05:07speed all the way the track.Exactly the same. It's a shame. She wants it

2:05:07 > 2:05:12so bad, and sometimes that could be no problem. She has that extra

2:05:12 > 2:05:17tension in her body. She is thinking about it so much in her head that

2:05:17 > 2:05:23she is stopping it flowing through her body and relaxing. Can't hide

2:05:23 > 2:05:27the disappointment in her face. She said she has had a rough week. She

2:05:27 > 2:05:33has. I don't know whether a lot of the stuff in her head has come from

2:05:33 > 2:05:36this Russian doping thing, because it was not long ago that she thought

2:05:36 > 2:05:40she was getting upgraded to a bronze medal and end up all got changed.

2:05:40 > 2:05:45She has been holding on to the fact that she was going to get that medal

2:05:45 > 2:05:50for so long and then it got swept away, but it is still ongoing. So

2:05:50 > 2:05:55that might be playing on the back of her mind and slowing her down.

2:05:55 > 2:06:04Another of the Canadians. This is Mimi Rahneva. There is a theme

2:06:04 > 2:06:11developing here. She is really quick away here. But slowly but surely, it

2:06:11 > 2:06:16ebbs away.

2:06:17 > 2:06:19ebbs away.Yeah, the Canadian men didn't do as well as expected, just

2:06:19 > 2:06:26like their women. Not quite sure whether it is their sleds or whether

2:06:26 > 2:06:38they just haven't clicked. So far, this is looking like a solid run. We

2:06:38 > 2:06:45predominantly steer through our shoulders. That was well controlled.

2:06:45 > 2:06:53Sometimes you can just do too much. You can oversteer the sled. Every

2:06:53 > 2:06:57time you steer the sled, you are cutting into the ice, which slows

2:06:57 > 2:07:02you down.

2:07:02 > 2:07:09you down. She nips up to tenth place. That was a good run from her.

2:07:09 > 2:07:14I'm not surprised that that is what has happened. She is only two

2:07:14 > 2:07:19hundredths lower than Loelling on that run Thomas the potential is

2:07:19 > 2:07:25there. This is where we speak about consistency and how the top sliders

2:07:25 > 2:07:29are putting consistent runs in to be in medal positions, whereas she has

2:07:29 > 2:07:35only had one good run out of three. That is why she is back where she

2:07:35 > 2:07:38is.CLARE BALDING: And all of that means that with just one run to

2:07:38 > 2:07:42come, Lizzy Yarnold is two hundredths of a second behind Janine

2:07:42 > 2:07:52Flock, the leader from Austria.

2:07:55 > 2:08:00Alex Coomber was watching that third one closely. Lizzy has moved up a

2:08:00 > 2:08:03position, but Laura is perhaps unlucky to be where she is.

2:08:07 > 2:08:11I don't think unlucky. She made one mistake, but that is what this track

2:08:11 > 2:08:15does. Make one mistake, and it will set you back. She had the fastest

2:08:15 > 2:08:20split until the very last split. If she can hold it together on that

2:08:20 > 2:08:24second run... Lizzy is not as settled as she normally is, but she

2:08:24 > 2:08:28is quite a heavy athlete and this track has a lot of other hills. She

2:08:28 > 2:08:34is ten kilos heavier than Laura and has the momentum to keep going.

2:08:34 > 2:08:37Lizzy has also got that very calm outlook. She is here to do one

2:08:37 > 2:08:42thing. She is here to be the first British winter Olympian to ever

2:08:42 > 2:08:45successfully defend a title. She doesn't mind putting pressure on

2:08:45 > 2:08:50herself and this is how she performed in the third one, moving

2:08:50 > 2:08:54from third to second position. She will go second last and if she can

2:08:54 > 2:08:58set a good time on her final one, all the pressure goes on to Janine

2:08:58 > 2:09:07Flock. But this was not smooth. Now, she took a big hit on the wall.

2:09:07 > 2:09:13Janine Flock has a much smoother line. The smoother you are, you are

2:09:13 > 2:09:16going a shorter distance. That is where you want to be. But Lizzy is

2:09:16 > 2:09:22going up and down. She's still maintaining her speed.Laura Deas

2:09:22 > 2:09:29has to be proud of what she is doing. She is phenomenal. Hopefully,

2:09:29 > 2:09:34she will do what she did yesterday. Yesterday, she didn't have a great

2:09:34 > 2:09:38first one, but she pulled together and improved on her second run. She

2:09:38 > 2:09:42will probably be cross with herself. She was thinking that she could move

2:09:42 > 2:09:50the rankings. And she was up on the clock early on.She was flying, but

2:09:50 > 2:09:57she made one mistake and slid sideways. That wiped her speed. But

2:09:57 > 2:10:00you believe that any of those top six athletes could end up with a

2:10:00 > 2:10:05medal.We have said this all along. There are just over three tenths

2:10:05 > 2:10:09between first and sixth place. You are talking about 20 centimetres

2:10:09 > 2:10:13after they have done their four miles. It is nothing and it will

2:10:13 > 2:10:18come down to the last few minutes. 12.45 is their final run to decide

2:10:18 > 2:10:22the medals. But the big news from the short track speed skating this

2:10:22 > 2:10:26morning is that there is to be no final four Elise Christie. She had a

2:10:26 > 2:10:31horrible looking fall in the semifinal of the 1500m and she

2:10:31 > 2:10:35looked in real pain afterwards. She has been taken away from the ice

2:10:35 > 2:10:40rink on a stretcher. She has been taken to hospital. She was penalised

2:10:40 > 2:10:44for this incident, so even if she had been fit and healthy, she would

2:10:44 > 2:10:47not have been allowed to escape in the final. Sarah Lindsay and Jon

2:10:47 > 2:10:51Eley are with me. You have skated with her and you are friends of

2:10:51 > 2:10:58hers. This is so hard after her fall in the final of the 1500m and after

2:10:58 > 2:11:05what happened in Sochi. This was her being taken away. Her physio is with

2:11:05 > 2:11:09her, tried to console her, but it is so upsetting. We wanted today to be

2:11:09 > 2:11:13her comeback because her first distance didn't go to plan. We all

2:11:13 > 2:11:16knew she was skating well, so to see her being stretchered off to

2:11:16 > 2:11:22hospital is heartbreaking.Jon Eley, there is a good team around her, but

2:11:22 > 2:11:27it needs to be a good medical team as well to check that she is OK

2:11:27 > 2:11:31physically as well as mentally. That is the most important thing. Forget

2:11:31 > 2:11:35about the race, let's make sure she is OK. Fingers crossed, she can

2:11:35 > 2:11:39write again, but if not, the guys around her will make sure she is

2:11:39 > 2:11:42safe.Let's head out to the Gangneung Ice Arena and get the

2:11:42 > 2:11:49latest.Really unfortunate and disturbing scenes at the Gangneung

2:11:49 > 2:11:53Ice Arena where a short while ago, Elise Christie was taken off the ice

2:11:53 > 2:11:56in a stretcher after crashing out in the 1500m semifinal. We have an

2:11:56 > 2:12:03update. She has been taken to hospital and she has gone for a

2:12:03 > 2:12:09scan. On what, we don't know. We will hopefully find out more in due

2:12:09 > 2:12:15course. From where you were sitting, how did it look? The penalty was

2:12:15 > 2:12:19right. She gave it her best shot. She came around outside of the

2:12:19 > 2:12:23Chinese skater and had a bit more speed, but was not quite past her.

2:12:23 > 2:12:27That means that when the left hand comes across to stabilise you as you

2:12:27 > 2:12:33go around the corner, she caught the Chinese girl, knocked her off

2:12:33 > 2:12:39balance. The Chinese girl falls and takes Christie with her. I was

2:12:39 > 2:12:45concerned about whether she had been cut on the right ankle. So whether

2:12:45 > 2:12:50it is broken or whether there is a cut, we don't know. I have been

2:12:50 > 2:12:56trying to contact the performance director. She has gone to hospital,

2:12:56 > 2:12:59but I have not been able to contact anybody yet. We will have to wait

2:12:59 > 2:13:05and see.We certainly hope it was nothing serious. All we know is that

2:13:05 > 2:13:11Elise Christie has gone to hospital for a scan.Fingers crossed, because

2:13:11 > 2:13:17Tuesday would be the heats for the 1000m, her favourite distance. She

2:13:17 > 2:13:24is a tough cookie, though. She is really tough and hopefully, she will

2:13:24 > 2:13:28be OK and keep us on the edge of our seats and save it all for the last

2:13:28 > 2:13:34day.Jon, in terms of the wider impact on short track speed skating

2:13:34 > 2:13:37in this country, the development programme is stretching. You need

2:13:37 > 2:13:42athletes to come into this. How important is it that we don't just

2:13:42 > 2:13:51focus on Elise Christie as the one person, because she is not the only

2:13:51 > 2:14:01one?No, we have had some great successes.

2:14:01 > 2:14:04successes. Everybody has been really interested in short track in the

2:14:04 > 2:14:07last few months. If we can continue to do that through programmes like

2:14:07 > 2:14:12Discover your goal that UK sport are running and also through our website

2:14:12 > 2:14:17with people registering their interest, people can join a club.

2:14:17 > 2:14:20South Korea is the place where short track speed skating is at its most

2:14:20 > 2:14:25popular. They have two skaters in this final of the 1500m. Let's head

2:14:25 > 2:14:27back out to join will fan Simon.

2:14:32 > 2:14:35Here is the line-up for the final and the home crowd are beside

2:14:35 > 2:14:38themselves with excitement at the possibility of Choi Minjeong or even

2:14:38 > 2:14:41Kim Alang claiming the gold medal. The South Korean president is in the

2:14:41 > 2:14:48stands in front of us, watching proceedings. Choi Minjeong, the

2:14:48 > 2:14:51overall World Cup winner, a seven time World Championship gold

2:14:51 > 2:15:01medallist, two-time overall world champion, is only 19 years old. In

2:15:01 > 2:15:06length two, Kim Alang, Olympic gold relay medallist from Sochi in 2014,

2:15:06 > 2:15:12two-time world champion in the relay as well. Imposition three, Kim

2:15:12 > 2:15:17Bhutan from Canada. 500m bronze medallist at the Olympic Games in

2:15:17 > 2:15:23Pyeongchang. Her world ranking of this event for this year is three.

2:15:23 > 2:15:30And imposition four, Petra Jaszapati, world and European silver

2:15:30 > 2:15:38medallist in the relay. Next up, the youngest in the field at 17 years of

2:15:38 > 2:15:43age. From China, Li Jinyu, a world junior bronze medallist only last

2:15:43 > 2:15:49year.

2:15:49 > 2:16:00year. And the Netherlands are represented here. Ter Mors was the

2:16:00 > 2:16:02Olympic champion in the long track speed skating and came fourth in

2:16:02 > 2:16:09Sochi.

2:16:09 > 2:16:14Arianna Fontana, the 500 metre Olympic champion, six Olympic medals

2:16:14 > 2:16:24in her career. What a line-up, and a congested looking field as well.

2:16:24 > 2:16:32This is going to be some race, I can tell you.Do you make Choi the

2:16:32 > 2:16:36favourite?Choi has to be one of the favourites. Santana has the gold

2:16:36 > 2:16:41medal, she might sit back and wait, and weight, using her explosive

2:16:41 > 2:16:46speed at the end.Using her experience here, keeping everybody

2:16:46 > 2:16:55waiting, taking her time. Getting to the line when she is ready.

2:16:55 > 2:17:03And away they go. First time of asking, 13.5 laps of the track. A

2:17:03 > 2:17:08final that we were rather hoping Elise Christie would have been

2:17:08 > 2:17:12participating in. But unfortunately, if you have just tuned in, her

2:17:12 > 2:17:16semifinal ending up in the padding on the outside of the track when she

2:17:16 > 2:17:21crashed on the final end. These seven are bracing for Olympic glory.

2:17:21 > 2:17:30Choi moves around the outside. Ter Mors in second. Kim Boutin of Canada

2:17:30 > 2:17:34in third.Choi Minjeong on the front for career. Ter Mors in second

2:17:34 > 2:17:38place. Kim Boutin of Canada in red and black moving to the front of the

2:17:38 > 2:17:44field. Choi Minjeong asserting authority. Fontana moving around on

2:17:44 > 2:17:48the outside. She wants to make sure she is at the business end of this

2:17:48 > 2:17:52all the way through. Fontana has the bit between her teeth having finally

2:17:52 > 2:17:58got that first Olympic gold medal to adds to her collection.Nine laps to

2:17:58 > 2:18:02go, it is about getting in the right place with seven skaters in the

2:18:02 > 2:18:06final, it is always difficult to come from the back when the

2:18:06 > 2:18:11challenge comes on. Choi will be looking to do that. Ter Mors moves

2:18:11 > 2:18:17into second place.Ter Mors making sure she is at the pointy end of the

2:18:17 > 2:18:21race it. Kim Boutin leads the way. Ter Mors of the Netherlands in

2:18:21 > 2:18:28three. Choi Minjeong in fourth. Her compatriot Kim Alang in five. The

2:18:28 > 2:18:41two outsiders, Li Jinyu. At the back, Fontana takes the lead now

2:18:41 > 2:18:47with just four laps to go. Boutin charging around the outside.Boutin

2:18:47 > 2:18:51wasn't going to give way. Ter Mors goes to the front for the

2:18:51 > 2:18:55Netherlands. Looking for a first Dutch gold in short track in the

2:18:55 > 2:19:00Olympics. Choi Minjeong tries to go around the outside. Choi Minjeong

2:19:00 > 2:19:05makes her move with two laps to go. Boutin on the front. Choi Minjeong

2:19:05 > 2:19:10has the speed. There is daylight now. The crowd getting really

2:19:10 > 2:19:14excited here. Choi Minjeong is one lap from the gold medal at the

2:19:14 > 2:19:19Olympic Games. Choi Minjeong sprinting away. The battle is now

2:19:19 > 2:19:23for second place. Gold for Choi Minjeong, second place in the end

2:19:23 > 2:19:29for Li Jinyu of China. Kim Boutin of Canada takes third. Its bronze for

2:19:29 > 2:19:34her. The home crowd have got what they wanted to see, gold the Choi

2:19:34 > 2:19:39Minjeong, who was the big favourite going into this race. She was

2:19:39 > 2:19:43favourite, favourite going into the 500 metres, she got the penalty, and

2:19:43 > 2:19:49now she's got the gold.Choi Minjeong didn't finish the last

2:19:49 > 2:19:53race, she didn't finish the final, but she finished this one off in

2:19:53 > 2:20:01style.The coaches there really enjoying this. 12,000 spectators in

2:20:01 > 2:20:06the arena loving every minute of this. You can see the emotion on her

2:20:06 > 2:20:10face. She can't believe it.When she made her move, what a blistering

2:20:10 > 2:20:15turn of pace she had. Nobody could live with it.This is superb

2:20:15 > 2:20:21skating, going around the outside and clearly firing on all cylinders,

2:20:21 > 2:20:29making it look so easy. Her power to weight ratio is the nominal. An

2:20:29 > 2:20:34extraordinary burst of pace, and then everybody else racing for the

2:20:34 > 2:20:39other medals, four silver, Choi Minjeong put in a race, the

2:20:39 > 2:20:4317-year-old Li Jinyu of China near the back for most of the race, she

2:20:43 > 2:20:48timed her effort well. A great victory, a dominant victory for Choi

2:20:48 > 2:20:54Minjeong. Don't forget, she was the overall World Champion at the age of

2:20:54 > 2:20:5816. She has seven world titles of various descriptions and is still

2:20:58 > 2:21:03only 19 years of age. Including, twice, overall world champion. This

2:21:03 > 2:21:09tops the lot, gold in front of a home crowd. It certainly does. Kim

2:21:09 > 2:21:16Boutin also getting a medal.A second time in these games, but Choi

2:21:16 > 2:21:21Minjeong takes the gold. Li Jinyu joiner, China and Korea utterly

2:21:21 > 2:21:27dominated this event, and this is only the fifth time it has been

2:21:27 > 2:21:32held. Korea have won three of those, five Olympic finals with China

2:21:32 > 2:21:38taking the other two. And again, Korea and China first and second.

2:21:38 > 2:21:42This time in that particular order. Boutin will be delighted with her

2:21:42 > 2:21:47second medal of the games. A second bronze medal for her. Kim Alang of

2:21:47 > 2:21:55Korea in fourth. Ter Mors of the Netherlands in fifth, and does a

2:21:55 > 2:22:10patty of hungry insects. The party starts now for the home crowd.

2:22:12 > 2:22:18-- Petra Jaszapati in sixth.

2:22:18 > 2:22:22STUDIO: A third gold of these Winter Olympics for the host nation, Choi

2:22:22 > 2:22:24Minjeong taking advantage and

2:22:24 > 2:22:24Olympics for the host nation, Choi Minjeong taking advantage and

2:22:24 > 2:22:30powering on in the last lap.She was impressive. Hugely confident. She

2:22:30 > 2:22:34sat in, she has not done any work, and used her speed at the end and

2:22:34 > 2:22:38made a massive gap. She looked really strong.The disappointment

2:22:38 > 2:22:42for everyone tuning in for the final was that Elise Christie was not

2:22:42 > 2:22:45there after a heavy fall in the semifinal. She has been taken to

2:22:45 > 2:22:52hospital and is having an x-ray. The chef de mission was at the Ice Arena

2:22:52 > 2:22:56and has been talking to David McDaid.

2:22:56 > 2:23:01I hoped to be chatting in better circumstances, but unfortunately, we

2:23:01 > 2:23:07hear that Elise has been taken to hospital. Information is obviously

2:23:07 > 2:23:11thin on the ground, do you have anything you can tell us about that?

2:23:11 > 2:23:17I was in the stand there, she has taken a heavy fall into the barrier.

2:23:17 > 2:23:20I have spoken to the performance director Stuart line, an ambulance

2:23:20 > 2:23:26has taken her to hospital. At this moment in time, we don't know what

2:23:26 > 2:23:30has happened, but she will get scans just now. That is all we know at

2:23:30 > 2:23:35this moment in time.It has been a good couple of days for Great

2:23:35 > 2:23:40Britain, getting a couple of bronze medals, but at the short track, it

2:23:40 > 2:23:44has not gone for us.At the moment, I am not bothered about medals, I am

2:23:44 > 2:23:49thinking about Elise, and hopefully, the injury is not a significant one,

2:23:49 > 2:23:53but it is a proportion that she has gone to hospital to get a scan, but

2:23:53 > 2:23:57it looked a heavy fall.I spoke to Charlotte Gilmartin, and she said

2:23:57 > 2:24:02Elise would not be on a stretcher if she was OK. All we can say is thank

2:24:02 > 2:24:05you for speaking to us, and I hope we get some good news soon.Thank

2:24:05 > 2:24:11you. STUDIO: A good reaction from Mike

2:24:11 > 2:24:15Haley, it is not about medals, it is about whether Elise Christie is OK.

2:24:15 > 2:24:19We are not getting any information yet, but we hope the scans does not

2:24:19 > 2:24:23show a break. Both mentally and physically, we hope she can recover

2:24:23 > 2:24:29from this.Fingers crossed that she will be OK. She has a few days

2:24:29 > 2:24:35before the 1000 metres. But it was a tough fall. She went in hard to the

2:24:35 > 2:24:41barrier, feet first. As you can see, she doesn't fall until the fifth

2:24:41 > 2:24:46block which means she is close to the barriers when she goes down.

2:24:46 > 2:24:49Just there, she has very diddled time to react and get herself away

2:24:49 > 2:24:54from going in feet first. In short track, that is normally the worst.

2:24:54 > 2:25:00You try to spin around to go in with your back?Yeah.Possibly that

2:25:00 > 2:25:06happened because she was trying so hard to stay on her feet. She is

2:25:06 > 2:25:09desperate to finish, trying and overtaking move to put in the top

2:25:09 > 2:25:14two, only the top two qualify for the final. She talked all about the

2:25:14 > 2:25:191500 metres being an irrelevance, and it being all about the 1000, it

2:25:19 > 2:25:24was a way of deflecting pressure. This mattered hugely to her, and

2:25:24 > 2:25:29unfortunately for Elise, you can see there, in real pain. As she was put

2:25:29 > 2:25:33onto the stretcher, both the shock of it, and huge disappointment of

2:25:33 > 2:25:38not being in the final and the pain. It can be a surreal moment in the

2:25:38 > 2:25:44Olympics and you fall. I have been there. It all flashes before your

2:25:44 > 2:25:48eyes very, very quickly. You don't quite know what has happened. You

2:25:48 > 2:25:52have got all these thoughts about where you will go in the next race.

2:25:52 > 2:25:59It very quickly hits you so hard that your day is over. It is such a

2:25:59 > 2:26:03difficult sport, this. It seems to be that when we go to

2:26:03 > 2:26:06it, something happens. Unfortunately for Elise, it nearly always involves

2:26:06 > 2:26:12her. Is it ever easier than this? The final was pretty clear there. It

2:26:12 > 2:26:15was good that it was mentioned everyone stayed on their feet. In

2:26:15 > 2:26:20the semifinal, Leigh and Troy came first and second in the final. She

2:26:20 > 2:26:24was pushing them all the way to the semifinal, sushi was in great form,

2:26:24 > 2:26:30so fingers crossed she can get back to help and get ready for Tuesday.

2:26:30 > 2:26:37But let's see how she was.Elise Christie has said the 1000 is her

2:26:37 > 2:26:41favourite event and the event she is strongest at. It is the 1000 metres

2:26:41 > 2:26:47now for the men. And this final features Elise Christie's boyfriend,

2:26:47 > 2:26:51skating for Hungary. He will be concerned about how she is. She will

2:26:51 > 2:26:55be hugely boosted if he can win a medal, he is at the back in the

2:26:55 > 2:27:01Hungarian

2:27:01 > 2:27:04Hungarian shirt and his name is Shaolin Sandor Liu.

2:27:08 > 2:27:13COMMENTATOR: Welcome back, everyone. What a final in prospect, nine laps

2:27:13 > 2:27:20ahead of these five skaters as they take to the ice. John Henry Kruger

2:27:20 > 2:27:29took his semifinal by the scruff of the neck. He hung in at the front.

2:27:29 > 2:27:36Girard was advanced to the final. Normally there are four skaters in

2:27:36 > 2:27:43the thousand metre final, six in the 1500, because of Samuel Girard being

2:27:43 > 2:27:47advanced, we have five skaters. Sometimes having five skaters in

2:27:47 > 2:27:521000 metres can make the race far more complicated, because you always

2:27:52 > 2:27:55will be attacked from behind because the fifth skater doesn't sit

2:27:55 > 2:28:04comfortably. Only nine laps, all the coaches waiting anxiously for the

2:28:04 > 2:28:10start of this race.

2:28:13 > 2:28:24The skaters about to come forward and be introduced one by one.

2:28:24 > 2:28:31John-Henry Krueger making it through to the final. He's in bonus

2:28:31 > 2:28:40territory now, having got this far. He certainly is.

2:28:40 > 2:28:46He certainly is.Next up, one of the two Koreans in the final. Seo Yira,

2:28:46 > 2:28:56the current world champion. Imposition three for this final.

2:28:56 > 2:28:58Imposition three for this final. The Canadian Samuel Girard, the

2:28:58 > 2:29:0221-year-old. He was fourth in the 1500 metres. Can he get a medal this

2:29:02 > 2:29:17time? Listen to the raw in a moment. , the national sporting hero, Lim

2:29:17 > 2:29:26Hyojun, the Olympic 1500 metre champion. Shaolin Sandor Liu from

2:29:26 > 2:29:30Hungary at the 2016 World Champion over 500 metres, the World Cup

2:29:30 > 2:29:33champion from this year at this distance. And he was second in the

2:29:33 > 2:29:42World Championship last year.

2:29:45 > 2:29:53The 1000 metre short track final.

2:29:53 > 2:30:01Shaolin Sandor Liu on the outside. Girard muscled out of it.

2:30:08 > 2:30:14Just making sure he is in the right place when it kicks off late on.

2:30:14 > 2:30:21Girard on the front. John-Henry Krueger coming into second place.

2:30:21 > 2:30:29Seo Yira in fourth and come at the back, Shaolin Sandor Liu.The move

2:30:29 > 2:30:35by John-Henry Krueger overtaken by Girard of Canada. It can make the

2:30:35 > 2:30:41difference to whether he gets a medal or not.

2:30:44 > 2:30:47The boyfriend of Elise Christie is back in fifth place, but looking

2:30:47 > 2:30:55comfortable.Looks as if he has another gear and he will need it.

2:30:55 > 2:31:02Girard of Canada leads the way.

2:31:02 > 2:31:07Girard of Canada leads the way. Seo Yira is in third. And Shaolin Sandor

2:31:07 > 2:31:13Liu has gone down! There are only two left. It is Girard in front with

2:31:13 > 2:31:19John-Henry Krueger on the last lap. And it is Girard of Canada who takes

2:31:19 > 2:31:22the gold medal, and John-Henry Krueger of the United States wins

2:31:22 > 2:31:28the silver! What an upset, how about that? The home crowd can't believe

2:31:28 > 2:31:36it. Both of their skaters went down. They certainly lost one of them,

2:31:36 > 2:31:40limit your junk across the line in third place. Shaolin Sandor Liu of

2:31:40 > 2:31:49Hungary in what drama. Both Korean skaters going down. Girard skated

2:31:49 > 2:31:53the most strategically good race at the front. John Henry down on his

2:31:53 > 2:32:01knees, he can't believe he has a silver medal. And what

2:32:01 > 2:32:05disappointment for Liu from Hungary. Charles Hamelin is congratulating

2:32:05 > 2:32:08his team-mate, and there is John-Henry Krueger of the USA.

2:32:08 > 2:32:11Everything I read about Samuel Girard coming into these Olympic

2:32:11 > 2:32:15Games suggested that people felt he was the next big thing for Canadian

2:32:15 > 2:32:20skating, but even he would not have necessarily expected to be Olympic

2:32:20 > 2:32:24champion in this race. Superb piece of skating by John-Henry Krueger and

2:32:24 > 2:32:31Samuel Girard of Canada, as both of the Korean skaters are looking up to

2:32:31 > 2:32:37the big screen to find out who will be taking the bronze medal.

2:32:37 > 2:32:41Unofficially, it is Hyojun who takes the bronze, but we will wait for

2:32:41 > 2:32:56confirmation.It got really tight. Seo Yira tries to dive in. And then

2:32:56 > 2:33:03Liu was taken out completely. John Henry almost went down as well. I

2:33:03 > 2:33:08think the penalty will go to Seo Yira. I'm not sure whether Lim

2:33:08 > 2:33:15crossed the line third. That is an officially what the results as at

2:33:15 > 2:33:21the moment. But there is the Olympic champion, Samuel Girard of Canada.

2:33:21 > 2:33:25What a moment for him. And also John-Henry Krueger, who raced

2:33:25 > 2:33:29aggressively, put himself in a position to get something and help

2:33:29 > 2:33:31animate the racing all the way through and got a fantastic reward

2:33:31 > 2:33:38for it. There is the Olympic champion, Samuel Girard. Shaolin

2:33:38 > 2:33:43Sandor Liu gets a penalty. So after poor Elise Christie leaving the

2:33:43 > 2:33:51track on a stretcher, he is penalised in the final. And Seo Yira

2:33:51 > 2:33:56is given as third with the bronze medal, behind John-Henry Krueger and

2:33:56 > 2:34:00the gold medallist Samuel Girard, with limits your John, the winner

2:34:00 > 2:34:09the other day in the 500m, down in fourth place.

2:34:14 > 2:34:22Laura Deas, one of the fastest in the field.

2:34:22 > 2:34:30the field. It's down to you in that moment. There is nobody else.

2:34:31 > 2:34:33moment. There is nobody else. I love this sport. I'm in it because I want

2:34:33 > 2:34:41to win.Lizzy Yarnold is the Olympic champion!

2:34:45 > 2:34:49We are 12 minutes away from the final and medal deciding one of the

2:34:49 > 2:34:53skeleton with Lizzy Yarnold, the defending champion, in second place,

2:34:53 > 2:34:58just 200 for the second behind Janine Flock of Austria and

2:34:58 > 2:35:02tantalisingly close to the podium is Laura Deas. A good run from her

2:35:02 > 2:35:09could see her move into the medals. She is 19 hundred behind the leader,

2:35:09 > 2:35:14nine hundredths behind the place. Alex, you think she could do it?

2:35:14 > 2:35:21Yeah. Both of them arrive there. 19 hundredths is nothing. It was always

2:35:21 > 2:35:28going to come down to this last run. It is even the last 100m that has

2:35:28 > 2:35:33been the defining moment for these sliders. And they go in reverse

2:35:33 > 2:35:37order, so it will all build up to those final four and we will be

2:35:37 > 2:35:41their lives for the whole of the fourth and deciding one of the

2:35:41 > 2:35:43skeleton. Looking for a pick me up after what happened to Elise

2:35:43 > 2:35:48Christie. Our hearts go out to her. She is in hospital, waiting for an

2:35:48 > 2:35:52x-ray to see how badly hurt she has been by that fall in the semifinals

2:35:52 > 2:35:56of the 1500m. But earlier this morning, there was a massive boost

2:35:56 > 2:35:59for the British team because Izzy Atkin, won a bronze medal in

2:35:59 > 2:36:07freestyle skiing for skiing slopestyle. This was how she did it.

2:36:08 > 2:36:14Next to drop will be Great Britain's Izzy Atkin. The biggest run of her

2:36:14 > 2:36:19life starts now.

2:36:20 > 2:36:24life starts now.Mechanical with the 450. Laid it down beautifully. Locks

2:36:24 > 2:36:33that in so beautifully. She tilts the skis on to it.

2:36:35 > 2:36:41the skis on to it. This run is flowing for her. There I see it,

2:36:41 > 2:36:50best rails we have seen from her. Come on, Izzy Atkin.

2:36:50 > 2:37:06Come on, Izzy Atkin. Final jump.And it's super-clean! It is the place!

2:37:06 > 2:37:1584.6.

2:37:15 > 2:37:2184.6. She's down. Great Britain's Izzy Atkin takes the bronze! Talk us

2:37:21 > 2:37:25through it.There were tonnes of big names in the field. It could have

2:37:25 > 2:37:30been anyone's. I was standing at the bottom after my final run. I knew I

2:37:30 > 2:37:33had skied the best I could and my heart was racing, but I can't

2:37:33 > 2:37:38believe it.

2:37:39 > 2:37:43She made sure she was clean and the youngest member of Team GB has a

2:37:43 > 2:37:47bronze medal for her efforts. Congratulations to Izzy Atkin. Her

2:37:47 > 2:37:52Olympic debut, and she will be holding onto that bronze medal with

2:37:52 > 2:37:59both hands. It means that for the first time since February the 3rd,

2:37:59 > 2:38:031924, the British team has a chance of winning two medals at the Winter

2:38:03 > 2:38:11Olympics on the same day. Laura Deas and Lizzy Yarnold both hope they can

2:38:11 > 2:38:15be on the podium. That would be the first time that has happened at a

2:38:15 > 2:38:18Winter Olympics for British athletes and four Lizzy Yarnold, her main aim

2:38:18 > 2:38:21here was to become the first Briton to successfully defend a winter

2:38:21 > 2:38:31Olympic title. Could this be the crescendo of her career? And often

2:38:31 > 2:38:40scared, sometimes petrified. When I put my helmet on, I say to myself

2:38:40 > 2:38:51"Why am I doing this? " But fear is your friend. One step, two steps,

2:38:51 > 2:39:01moving faster, no turning back now. You need to pinpoint focus.

2:39:01 > 2:39:06Peripheral vision filtering constantly, taking in an orchestra

2:39:06 > 2:39:14of information. Not just using your eyes, you are using your sense of

2:39:14 > 2:39:20smell, the pressure in your chest. You are feeling the G-forces in your

2:39:20 > 2:39:30neck and arms. The slightest move can change everything.

2:39:30 > 2:39:38can change everything. Working in fractions. And then, there is

2:39:41 > 2:39:44fractions. And then, there is calm. Alex Coomber is with us, who won a

2:39:44 > 2:39:48bronze medal in 2002 and started this 21st century sliding phenomenon

2:39:48 > 2:39:52which has meant that at every Winter Olympics since you, a British woman

2:39:52 > 2:39:56has won a medal in skeleton. Is it going to happen again today? If I

2:39:56 > 2:40:03had to lay my cards on the table, definitely. Hopefully two.Well, if

2:40:03 > 2:40:06you want to catch up with Lizzy Yarnold, you have to go to her,

2:40:06 > 2:40:10because she doesn't spend a lot of time in the UK. The skeleton sliders

2:40:10 > 2:40:14move around Europe and are often based in Austria, which was where I

2:40:14 > 2:40:25went to talk to her last month.

2:40:26 > 2:40:30When I'm about to start sprinting, you're looking at the weather, the

2:40:30 > 2:40:34snow, whether the eyes looks wet or there was frost forming on the top.

2:40:34 > 2:40:44Everything is completely heightened. Sound, sight, smell, everything. All

2:40:44 > 2:40:50this information is coming together to try and have the fastest run.

2:40:50 > 2:40:54It's just a complete orchestra of information. And then you're lying

2:40:54 > 2:41:06on the sled and the whole thing is rattling. It is violent.

2:41:11 > 2:41:24She's going to win the gold medal, surely!Good to see you!

2:41:24 > 2:41:27surely!Good to see you! It was the most amazing two weeks of my life.

2:41:27 > 2:41:33As soon as I saw my parents, it wasn't just my gold medal, it was my

2:41:33 > 2:41:38family's, my friends' and everyone who supported me and got me there.

2:41:38 > 2:41:44Elizabeth Yarnold!

2:41:46 > 2:41:51Elizabeth Yarnold!Perhaps not surprisingly, after Suchy, you

2:41:51 > 2:41:55needed to step away. Was that always the plan or did it come after you

2:41:55 > 2:42:01that you went, I can't do this any more?I hadn't yet become a

2:42:01 > 2:42:05champion. There were still so many goals that I had. So I quickly

2:42:05 > 2:42:13knuckled back down and focused in on the new challenges.

2:42:14 > 2:42:18the new challenges. I was really pushing myself and expecting a lot

2:42:18 > 2:42:21of myself, and it drove me to a point of physical and mental

2:42:21 > 2:42:28exhaustion. Trying to drive yourself to get everything out of every

2:42:28 > 2:42:32training run with the determination to win, I didn't realise how much of

2:42:32 > 2:42:38a toll it was taking. And what did you do with your time away?We moved

2:42:38 > 2:42:43house. I did a few craft courses that were so different to skeleton.

2:42:43 > 2:42:46Lampshade making! I did a few university courses and stuff like

2:42:46 > 2:42:52that.When you pull on the superwoman suit and become Lizzy

2:42:52 > 2:43:00Yarnold, the athlete again, do you feel different? No. Everything is

2:43:00 > 2:43:04just down to the best of my ability, so I don't feel like a huge step

2:43:04 > 2:43:12change from Lizzy at home to Lizzy the athlete. In all of life, I think

2:43:12 > 2:43:15I just have huge expectation or hope for myself. The reason I came back

2:43:15 > 2:43:20to skeleton after being Olympic champion is because I love being an

2:43:20 > 2:43:27athlete. I feel hugely honoured to work with a different team from the

2:43:27 > 2:43:30one that took me to Sochi. There are still so much to learn and explore.

2:43:30 > 2:43:34It is hard work, but it is fun. You never know what will happen until

2:43:34 > 2:43:42the finish line, so it will be a brilliant race.Lizzy Yarnold, so

2:43:42 > 2:43:48composed as an athlete. She seems so focused on this massive target, to

2:43:48 > 2:43:54make history.Yeah. The next 45 minutes could literally change her

2:43:54 > 2:43:59life. It was life-changing winning one gold medal. To win two is

2:43:59 > 2:44:05incredible. I know what she is like. She will not be thinking about that.

2:44:05 > 2:44:10She will not think about anything other than getting herself ready,

2:44:10 > 2:44:14setting her sled up, calming her nerves. She will not worry about

2:44:14 > 2:44:20what anyone else is doing. She knows she can do this. And for the first

2:44:20 > 2:44:24time, we have two skeleton at it in with a chance. Laura Deas is just

2:44:24 > 2:44:31behind the third placed position that she would need to get a medal.

2:44:31 > 2:44:34But they have such long and difficult preparations, so

2:44:34 > 2:44:39unglamorous. All the training, the being away from home. When it comes

2:44:39 > 2:44:42to these moments, it is there one shot at glory and out there

2:44:42 > 2:44:47supporting them are friends and family, always crucial to any

2:44:47 > 2:44:55athlete's life, their mums. That is run three done. I wanted to find the

2:44:55 > 2:44:59two important mums, the biggest supporters. We have sued ease and

2:44:59 > 2:45:07Judith, Lizzy's mum and Laura's mum. How are you feeling? Not bad at this

2:45:07 > 2:45:13moment, but during the run, I was incomplete bits. I didn't know

2:45:13 > 2:45:21whether to be sick or cry or both. Is it worse today than yesterday?

2:45:21 > 2:45:26Yes. I didn't think it could be, but it was! I don't know what the next

2:45:26 > 2:45:33one will be like. Don't come near me.And how about you, Judith? You

2:45:33 > 2:45:40have been here before. We have been through it before. Yesterday, I was

2:45:40 > 2:45:44really nervous. Today, I feel so much better, really excited. I know

2:45:44 > 2:45:51Lizzy is good under pressure. So I feel relaxed and I am enjoying

2:45:51 > 2:45:54today. But we were saying earlier how lucky we are that Lizzy and

2:45:54 > 2:45:57Laura started at the same time and as families, we have become good

2:45:57 > 2:46:04friends. We are rooting for the Brits.

2:46:04 > 2:46:09Who are these crazy people behind? Do you know them?

2:46:12 > 2:46:20My family are here, her dad, her brother, cousins, people watching in

2:46:20 > 2:46:25New York. People watching all over. It is fantastic. She gets married in

2:46:25 > 2:46:32a few months. You are going to be mother of the bride soon!

2:46:32 > 2:46:37Lizzy got married recently to James, so we have James up the top. We have

2:46:37 > 2:46:45Lizzy's sisters, and James' family, hello to the Yarnold and Bolton

2:46:45 > 2:46:51family cheering them on at home.We are all cheering Lizzy Yarnold and

2:46:51 > 2:46:56Laura Deas on. It is going mad here and we have one run left. Who is

2:46:56 > 2:47:01going to bring home the medals? I Jolly hope it is both of them. For

2:47:01 > 2:47:07their mum's sate! Fantastic stuff from Amy, and the

2:47:07 > 2:47:12person most concerned for Elise Christie is her mum Angela, and the

2:47:12 > 2:47:17news on Elise is she has not broken any thing, and Shaolin, her

2:47:17 > 2:47:22boyfriend, says she will be ready to race on Tuesday. A desperate day for

2:47:22 > 2:47:26Elise Christie not getting through to the final of the 1500 and getting

2:47:26 > 2:47:30taken dolls Buttle, but the news at the moment looks OK. She will

2:47:30 > 2:47:37hopefully recovered to be on the ice on Tuesday. We hope she will get the

2:47:37 > 2:47:41rub of the luck, because, my word, she deserves it. We will go to the

2:47:41 > 2:47:49fourth and final skeleton run. Alex, on this track, you said what and was

2:47:49 > 2:47:54an advantage it is for Lizzy Yarnold. She is the heaviest slider

2:47:54 > 2:47:59in the whole field. Some of the lighter girls are producing meat

2:47:59 > 2:48:04runs, and you wonder why they are not getting down faster with speed.

2:48:04 > 2:48:08There are uphill sections in this track. If you are lighter, you don't

2:48:08 > 2:48:13have moment to get you down. For Lizzy, she can afford to make

2:48:13 > 2:48:16mistakes and it doesn't affect her that much because she has a momentum

2:48:16 > 2:48:25to keep her travelling. The lighter girls could potentially catch up but

2:48:25 > 2:48:29don't have time because it is short. Good news today that she is not

2:48:29 > 2:48:34suffering from the dizziness that affected her yesterday. After the

2:48:34 > 2:48:37first round, looking disorientated and admitting she was short of

2:48:37 > 2:48:42breath. She has been steaming to clear her sinuses. It is dusty and

2:48:42 > 2:48:49very cold. The fourth run will happen late at night, 9:45 in South

2:48:49 > 2:48:58Korea. But adrenaline always helps. She won't be worried about that now.

2:48:58 > 2:49:03This is it, the preparation and training, the worry, and anxiety,

2:49:03 > 2:49:07getting through the first runs yesterday, getting back on the track

2:49:07 > 2:49:10today, it's almost a time to clear your mind and not think about

2:49:10 > 2:49:17anything.She takes her hat off and looks straight at Zheng, and says it

2:49:17 > 2:49:27is fine. She is feeling strong. At the top of the run, the elite coach

2:49:27 > 2:49:32shouts them on and says go. If Lizzy can have a cleaner and smooth the

2:49:32 > 2:49:38run, she has a chance. This is the two hundredths, it is the distance

2:49:38 > 2:49:42and it is not far.Let's look at Laura Deas, because you have said

2:49:42 > 2:49:47throughout, no one is driving the track better than her, but she lost

2:49:47 > 2:49:52time in the later section of her third run.The first run she was

2:49:52 > 2:49:57flying, first at all the checks. She had a hit and came out, the angle

2:49:57 > 2:50:03she hit was bad. Instead of hitting and coming off the side and carrying

2:50:03 > 2:50:07on straight in a parallel, she came in sideways and came out sideways.

2:50:07 > 2:50:13She was breaking for the element she was hitting. If she can clean the

2:50:13 > 2:50:20exit up, and she did, it she is 19 hundredths of gold, which she can

2:50:20 > 2:50:26easily do.She can move to the top. As I said, the top six, any of them

2:50:26 > 2:50:31can change. It is really, really tight, nothing in the timings.

2:50:31 > 2:50:38Hundredths of a second if they can stay smooth, if they can stay

2:50:38 > 2:50:41relaxed, if they can think of the thoughts ahead of time they need to,

2:50:41 > 2:50:47they need to be sharp and ready. The supporters are doing a great job.

2:50:47 > 2:50:51Making them realise they have got an awful lot of people behind them.

2:50:51 > 2:50:55Whatever happens, they will hug and love them, but they would love even

2:50:55 > 2:51:00more to celebrate a medal, maybe two. All still to come in the final

2:51:00 > 2:51:02run of the skeleton.

2:51:04 > 2:51:12Lots of British fans here. Lizzy Yarnold...

2:51:14 > 2:51:20Yarnold heads to the finish. Yarnold is two hundredths off the

2:51:20 > 2:51:25lead. Lizzy Yarnold to Laura Deas.

2:51:25 > 2:51:31A fast starter. She is so strong, so powerful.

2:51:31 > 2:51:36Brilliant from Herb there!

2:51:38 > 2:51:45Laura stays in fourth place. -- from her there.

2:51:49 > 2:51:54They both started sliding into thousands nine, and both came from

2:51:54 > 2:51:57different sporting backgrounds, but both of them at least, both hugely

2:51:57 > 2:52:01competitive. How much does it help, when you did it, you are on your own

2:52:01 > 2:52:06with no one to support you, but they have each other. It is great. When I

2:52:06 > 2:52:10competed, there were other girls in the team, MS Stuart was the second

2:52:10 > 2:52:18girl in my team. In Salt Lake, we needed one more race, she pushed out

2:52:18 > 2:52:21of the groove with her sled in Calgary, which lost our second

2:52:21 > 2:52:28place. We did nearly have two girls a long time ago. To have someone

2:52:28 > 2:52:31else there, Lizzy said, it is difficult to understand what it is

2:52:31 > 2:52:35like, because not many people have done this. To have them both there,

2:52:35 > 2:52:38they know what it is like to go into a bend well, they know what a good

2:52:38 > 2:52:44run feels like, they know a bad start or a good start. To talk to

2:52:44 > 2:52:48someone without having to constantly explain makes a difference, you can

2:52:48 > 2:52:55relax.Absolutely. The record of female skeleton sliders from Great

2:52:55 > 2:53:00Britain over the 21st-century Olympics has been outstanding. Alex

2:53:00 > 2:53:03Cooper in 2002 taking bronze, Shelley Rudman four years later,

2:53:03 > 2:53:08Silver. Then we had our first Olympic champion in skeleton, Amy

2:53:08 > 2:53:11Williams in 2010, before Lizzy Yarnold followed up four years ago.

2:53:11 > 2:53:14Let's join up live.

2:53:18 > 2:53:22COMMENTATOR: Tremendous excitement here, this final run is well

2:53:22 > 2:53:29underway, and we join the action live here, watching on. The United

2:53:29 > 2:53:38States athlete, this is Kendall Wesenberg, in 17th place. She has

2:53:38 > 2:53:44had an Olympics to remember, moments of really untidy sliding, little

2:53:44 > 2:53:48flashes of excellence as well. She is one for the future, definitely.

2:53:48 > 2:53:53She's certainly is. A slide of her experience, it is learning what the

2:53:53 > 2:54:01games can bring and building has mentally, using this to develop her

2:54:01 > 2:54:07skills. Great line through there into the big corner, 12. She will be

2:54:07 > 2:54:11happy with this run down the bottom. One of her tidy ones, pushing into

2:54:11 > 2:54:18the big Olympic corner. This is bend 15, curve 16 brings them home, of

2:54:18 > 2:54:29course. At the line, Wesenberg goes 52.6 five. Only 17, all still before

2:54:29 > 2:54:33her.That was a very good final run from her. She will be happy with

2:54:33 > 2:54:38that. Coming down in first place, you want to see the fact that you

2:54:38 > 2:54:41are standing there on the leaderboard and you don't drop any

2:54:41 > 2:54:47places. A good solid run, quite a new athlete. Not as experienced as

2:54:47 > 2:54:52the top of the field. She has a lot to learn, but first Olympics, you

2:54:52 > 2:54:57couldn't ask for more. Using her toes, dropping off the corner too

2:54:57 > 2:55:04much. Corner nine, the tricky corner, really good. Probably didn't

2:55:04 > 2:55:11have the same speed into it, but she is all smiles standing on the

2:55:11 > 2:55:16podium.As each athlete ticks by, the tension will ratchet up. We hope

2:55:16 > 2:55:21you are enjoying the event at home, do Jaclyn Narracott of Australia in

2:55:21 > 2:55:3516th place currently. Top 15 finish, eighth at St Moritz.

2:55:35 > 2:55:39eighth at St Moritz. Narracott needs a really good one here, close to 52

2:55:39 > 2:55:43seconds. If you can, it would be lovely. You can see how beautiful

2:55:43 > 2:55:49the ice is, the shine on it, spritz with water in between runs, freshly

2:55:49 > 2:55:54prepared, which keeps the ice in a good condition. It is not breaking

2:55:54 > 2:55:59up or anything, maintaining it. A really big skid there. It will be

2:55:59 > 2:56:04hard eyes, -7 out there. You have to have your runners set up and stay

2:56:04 > 2:56:11calm on the sled. The crowds around the Olympic bend. The run to bend 15

2:56:11 > 2:56:17can be so tricky. She seemed

2:56:17 > 2:56:20can be so tricky. She seemed slow through there. 52.80 two. She is

2:56:20 > 2:56:26pleased with her week's work.Great supporters there, travelling all the

2:56:26 > 2:56:29way from Australia, her parents are out there. They are happy to see

2:56:29 > 2:56:38their daughter compete in a and Olympic Games. Dom Parsons will be

2:56:38 > 2:56:48out there.I saw him earlier. We can see her just skidding off the

2:56:48 > 2:56:52corner line. She did her work in the wrong place in the corner and had to

2:56:52 > 2:56:58fight. She clips the wall there. She has to work harder into corner 12 to

2:56:58 > 2:57:04control the sled.A good example of friendships developing in the sport,

2:57:04 > 2:57:07Narracott and Wesenberg embrace. Some closest friends are those from

2:57:07 > 2:57:12other nations and countries, closest friends are splattered all around

2:57:12 > 2:57:15the world for me, because of ten plus years of being with them

2:57:15 > 2:57:21through the winter months.Next to go and currently in 15th is Sophia

2:57:21 > 2:57:29Jong from Korea. The Koreans have done so well. Many of you were blown

2:57:29 > 2:57:37away by her performance, spectacular winning the men's skeleton. At 24,

2:57:37 > 2:57:45still time to improve. Some good runs at the top of the track. She

2:57:45 > 2:57:49let herself down at the bottom with speed. She made a couple of

2:57:49 > 2:57:55mistakes, which is why she is so far back in the pack. I thought she

2:57:55 > 2:57:59would be higher up with the track knowledge. But her ability has meant

2:57:59 > 2:58:04she hasn't quite got it right. A heavy knock into the big corner. You

2:58:04 > 2:58:09can hear her feet and helmet on the ice. Messy as she comes into the big

2:58:09 > 2:58:13Olympic corner under the Olympic logo. She will lose a bit of ground

2:58:13 > 2:58:18here because of that. Once you make a collision like that, speed drops

2:58:18 > 2:58:25off so quickly. Jeong still a good deal quicker and goes first. Quicker

2:58:25 > 2:58:30than Narracott and those that went before. A chance now for the next

2:58:30 > 2:58:373-4 athletes to leapfrog Jeong as well. She has had so much pressure.

2:58:37 > 2:58:41She is a young, up and coming athlete. This is her home track and

2:58:41 > 2:58:46home games, the pressure that comes with it to do so well. And in the

2:58:46 > 2:58:51men's race, one got gold, so she is definitely one to watch for the

2:58:51 > 2:58:55future, she has an incredible start on her. She just needs that

2:58:55 > 2:59:01experience to keep it under control when the pressure is on. You can see

2:59:01 > 2:59:05there, the two athletes and how different the lines are. It is only

2:59:05 > 2:59:10a few inches, but it can make a huge difference. You can see how much

2:59:10 > 2:59:17faster than the Korean slider she was. Really starting to overtake.

2:59:17 > 2:59:24Kim Meylemans next for Belgium, the 21-year-old, 14th place for her. She

2:59:24 > 2:59:27slaps her thighs, a little bit like Michael Phelps at the start. Just

2:59:27 > 2:59:39getting that crucial fast start. Not blinding off the blocks, 520, 522.

2:59:39 > 2:59:46Her best run of her campaign so far was on the first run today.

2:59:46 > 2:59:50Hopefully, if she puts another good run in today, she will be happy with

2:59:50 > 2:59:54her final day and walk away with a smile and a bit of relief it is all

2:59:54 > 2:59:58over and the pressure has finished of being at the Olympic Games. It is

2:59:58 > 3:00:02about putting consistent runs in. Another good one here. She needs to

3:00:02 > 3:00:06get this right. Centimetres the other way and she would have got

3:00:06 > 3:00:10through clean. She starts to build speed into the big Olympic corner

3:00:10 > 3:00:18and the exit through the speed trap. Two top ten World Cup finishes this

3:00:18 > 3:00:24year. Curve 16 will bring her games to an end as well. 52.26 is her

3:00:24 > 3:00:30time. That is the quickest of all of her four runs. An excellent way to

3:00:30 > 3:00:35finish your Olympic Games.

3:00:35 > 3:00:39We can see Lizzy Yarnold's dad in the big red coat. They are all

3:00:39 > 3:00:44waiting in anticipation of what will happen. That was a good run from

3:00:44 > 3:00:50her. She has good body position on the sled. Her head is low, her

3:00:50 > 3:00:54shoulders are flat. We do a lot of work in wind tunnels throughout the

3:00:54 > 3:00:59summer, perfecting body positions. Even when she takes that hit, look

3:00:59 > 3:01:06how low her shoulders stick on the sled. That is what you need to do.

3:01:06 > 3:01:12Her coach seems happy as well.Yes, the ex-skeleton slider for Austria.

3:01:12 > 3:01:21He has won many medals in his time. So Meylemans' job is done. The IOC

3:01:21 > 3:01:27president is having a night out, and why not? This is an exciting event

3:01:27 > 3:01:31and will crank up greatly in the next 25 minutes. Katie Uhlaender has

3:01:31 > 3:01:35had a games she will want to forget. If anybody needs a confidence

3:01:35 > 3:01:41restoring good last run, it is her, in tears after run two yesterday.

3:01:41 > 3:01:47She wanted this so badly. Her Olympic chase for a medal has been

3:01:47 > 3:01:53many years in the making. She tried to go to the summer games in London.

3:01:53 > 3:01:57Here, almost because she wants it so bad, the tension is in her body and

3:01:57 > 3:02:03she doesn't look as relaxed as other sliders. She has always had a unique

3:02:03 > 3:02:09way to steer, using her legs quite far apart. I so want it for her and

3:02:09 > 3:02:21I want her to feel happy with how she has performed.

3:02:21 > 3:02:29she has performed. That was the slowest run of the lot.

3:02:31 > 3:02:34slowest run of the lot.I think out of all the athletes here, she will

3:02:34 > 3:02:40be the most disappointed because it is her fourth games. She came fourth

3:02:40 > 3:02:44in Sochi four years ago. She was flying at the beginning of the week

3:02:44 > 3:02:49in training. She was probably an outside chance for a medal, but you

3:02:49 > 3:02:54thought she would put pressure on the front runners. But it hasn't

3:02:54 > 3:03:01worked out for her.She has made a few mistakes. She was a bit too

3:03:01 > 3:03:06high. She is having to work harder, so she has not settled on her sled.

3:03:06 > 3:03:16Nice to see her smile, at least. Two of the next three are really slick

3:03:16 > 3:03:21off the blocks. Jane Channell will be next. She is 12th at the moment.

3:03:21 > 3:03:30She has put together three really consistent runs, assisted, of

3:03:30 > 3:03:33course, with this terrific start. If anybody is capable of cutting five

3:03:33 > 3:03:44seconds from her start, it might be her.

3:03:44 > 3:03:49her.5.05 is consistent with what we have seen from her. But is that

3:03:49 > 3:03:55going to kill her velocity at the top of the track? The Canadian

3:03:55 > 3:03:57equipment hasn't really been working. They have made little

3:03:57 > 3:04:09mistakes all the way down the track. This is the one that she should have

3:04:09 > 3:04:13been putting in all the way through competition, but hasn't managed to

3:04:13 > 3:04:26find it.That was her best effort so far.

3:04:26 > 3:04:32far. She finishes with a cracking 52.09 and that is more like it. It's

3:04:32 > 3:04:38a little too late, but what a strong finish. That was an incredible one

3:04:38 > 3:04:42and she is probably wishing she had managed it in the other three, but

3:04:42 > 3:04:48she can be happy. She has finished on a strong one. She had the best

3:04:48 > 3:04:53start in the whole field. She is an incredible sprinter, training so

3:04:53 > 3:05:01hard in the summer. The Canadians have a nice Bush House, so all year

3:05:01 > 3:05:06round, they can push their sleds on the ice, -- they have an ice push

3:05:06 > 3:05:13house.That run will put pressure on the next three sliders, because they

3:05:13 > 3:05:19are so close. That was a really good run. That would be mixing it with

3:05:19 > 3:05:26the top five women. Here is the likeable and consistent Marina

3:05:26 > 3:05:32Gilardoni from Switzerland. She starts her final run in 11th place.

3:05:32 > 3:05:37She is 30 now and this might be her last Olympic Games. She had a

3:05:37 > 3:05:41distinguished career which took her as high as number five in the world

3:05:41 > 3:05:49two years ago.

3:05:49 > 3:05:57two years ago.Her push has always taken her down the track. She's in a

3:05:57 > 3:06:00strong animal. He has had hamstring issues in the last few years, and

3:06:00 > 3:06:06her drive is not quite as good. With some tracks, the push can take you

3:06:06 > 3:06:10quite far. This track is unforgiving. There are uphill

3:06:10 > 3:06:19sections and you have to drive it as well as you can push it.

3:06:19 > 3:06:25well as you can push it.La Dhoni was ragged after kerbs seven. --

3:06:25 > 3:06:32Gilardoni was ragged after kerbs seven -- kerbs seven. At the moment,

3:06:32 > 3:06:36Canadian Jane Channell holds the lead but things will change

3:06:36 > 3:06:42dramatically as we head to the top ten.

3:06:43 > 3:06:46ten.The next couple of sliders are Canadians as well, so this is for

3:06:46 > 3:06:49bragging rights to see who finishes top in their nation at the Olympic

3:06:49 > 3:06:56Games.

3:06:56 > 3:06:59Games. It is about who will make the tea and coffee for the next couple

3:06:59 > 3:07:04of weeks when they get home in training! Great to see the

3:07:04 > 3:07:13difference in the lines between the leader and the Swiss. She is going

3:07:13 > 3:07:16further around the corner because all of those ups and downs, which

3:07:16 > 3:07:23cost extra time.

3:07:23 > 3:07:31cost extra time.Next to go for Canada is Mimi Rahneva. She is in

3:07:31 > 3:07:35tenth place and a feature of her sliding is this explosive, terrific

3:07:35 > 3:07:40start.

3:07:44 > 3:07:49start. There have been just 400s between all of her starts.Very

3:07:49 > 3:07:54consistent. That is what you want, four consistent runs added up

3:07:54 > 3:08:01together. And that is what this girl has, which allows her more mistakes

3:08:01 > 3:08:08on the bottom. But she is having to fight as she comes out of corner

3:08:08 > 3:08:16nine. Another clip on the same corner that some of the top riders

3:08:16 > 3:08:22have also been clipping into.

3:08:22 > 3:08:24have also been clipping into. And uphill, as we keep stressing, once

3:08:24 > 3:08:31the speed is lost, it's hard to get back. That speed will be a

3:08:31 > 3:08:37disappointment.

3:08:37 > 3:08:42disappointment. Costly mistakes are an equation we are getting used to.

3:08:42 > 3:08:47Yes, every athlete here is just fighting. It is the last run. For

3:08:47 > 3:08:50some people, it means they relax and have nothing to lose and they have

3:08:50 > 3:08:54the ride of their life. For others, they are still fighting because they

3:08:54 > 3:08:58still really want to move up and it is that psychological battle of

3:08:58 > 3:09:02whether it will improve their sliding or cause mistakes like that

3:09:02 > 3:09:09and give extra tension in their sled and their body.We are 15 minutes

3:09:09 > 3:09:11away from knowing if Janine Flock will win Austria's first-ever gold

3:09:11 > 3:09:16in this event. Or maybe Lizzy Yarnold to win gold again.

3:09:16 > 3:09:21Jacqueline Lolling for Germany in third place. Germany have never won

3:09:21 > 3:09:28gold. Laura Deas in fourth place. All the drama to unfold shortly.

3:09:28 > 3:09:32Elisabeth Vathje of Canada is ninth at the moment. Bad first run, better

3:09:32 > 3:09:39second run, slightly indifferent third one.She has not had the

3:09:39 > 3:09:45consistency that the top sliders have had. That is where I -- why she

3:09:45 > 3:09:56is back where she is.

3:10:16 > 3:10:27She is going for it. Pretty straight on the final curve. Well done,

3:10:27 > 3:10:31Elisabeth Vathje. She gets married next month, and that will send her

3:10:31 > 3:10:35to the ceremony is much happier. There will be an element of

3:10:35 > 3:10:44frustration as well. If only she had done that on all four.

3:10:44 > 3:10:48done that on all four. She is a really good slider. She has been

3:10:48 > 3:10:52consistently up there, ranked third in the world. She knows she can do

3:10:52 > 3:11:02better, but she has put down a great performance.

3:11:02 > 3:11:09performance. A bit too late, but she has moved up and she is in the lead

3:11:09 > 3:11:13by quite some bit.To put that into perspective, the potential

3:11:13 > 3:11:18medallists would love a 51.82 to round off their runs.That is the

3:11:18 > 3:11:23fourth fastest run of the whole competition. However, we now move

3:11:23 > 3:11:32on. In eighth place is Kimberley Bos for the Netherlands at her first

3:11:32 > 3:11:42Olympic Games. She is just 24. Can she finish with a flourish?

3:11:42 > 3:11:47she finish with a flourish? Again, wonderfully consistent. 400s span

3:11:47 > 3:11:53her starts so far.She has had a really good Olympic Games for

3:11:53 > 3:12:01someone so young in her sliding development. Some of these young

3:12:01 > 3:12:13sliders are just building experience towards the next Olympics.

3:12:18 > 3:12:27Really going for it. She takes the lead, for the moment. What an

3:12:27 > 3:12:34incredible run, finishing on a high. I think Vathje thought she would

3:12:34 > 3:12:41hang around for a bit longer. But everyone is giving it their best.

3:12:41 > 3:12:47Seven to go, building up to the medal chase. If they're starting to

3:12:47 > 3:12:52be a bit of speed coming into the track as the night wears on? The

3:12:52 > 3:12:57temperature is dropping as it gets later. The ice temperature is

3:12:57 > 3:13:03dropping, which will suit some people's equipment.Yesterday, no

3:13:03 > 3:13:09one went under 52 seconds. It is certain to happen soon.I was

3:13:09 > 3:13:17thinking the same about the ice and whether the conditions different

3:13:17 > 3:13:20from yesterday, meaning a few different degrees could make all the

3:13:20 > 3:13:26difference and suit some sliders. In seventh place, the last athlete to

3:13:26 > 3:13:36go who can't hold onto medal potentials. Love the Priedulena.

3:13:36 > 3:13:45She's usually a good starter as well.

3:13:45 > 3:13:56well.Very good line into corner one.

3:13:59 > 3:14:07You have two load onto the sled after sprinting and be still and

3:14:07 > 3:14:14calm and feel what is happening through your body.

3:14:18 > 3:14:29through your body.Priedulena has been excellent on this final run.

3:14:31 > 3:14:35That is good enough to take her ahead of Kimberley Bos for the

3:14:35 > 3:14:42moment. Priedulena finishes no worse than seventh place at the Olympic

3:14:42 > 3:14:49Games.She would have definitely taken that at the start. She is 11th

3:14:49 > 3:14:52ranked in the world, so for her to get in the top ten was probably her

3:14:52 > 3:14:57goal. To be able to finish off in this position, she has definitely

3:14:57 > 3:15:00come out with her A game and brought her best performance when it

3:15:00 > 3:15:07matters. That is where she is managing to get her speed. She has

3:15:07 > 3:15:16done so well to learn this track in a really six runs you are given.

3:15:16 > 3:15:2314th in Sochi, improved on that with a vengeance here in South Korea. And

3:15:23 > 3:15:31now, we come to the potential medallists. Tina Hermann next. She's

3:15:31 > 3:15:37in sixth place. Two tenths of a second off Jacqueline Loelling. She

3:15:37 > 3:15:41has been improving and improving all the way. If you are looking for

3:15:41 > 3:15:46times here, 51.8 or better would put some pressure on Laura Deas and

3:15:46 > 3:15:52Jacqueline Loelling, that's for sure.

3:15:53 > 3:15:56sure.A 51.83, one of the quickest. She has found the settings from

3:15:56 > 3:16:01yesterday that she needed to tweak. This will put pressure on the next

3:16:01 > 3:16:062-3 side is coming. Whether it is good enough to get into the medals,

3:16:06 > 3:16:14I'm not sure. It will put pressure on Fernstadt and Anna

3:16:14 > 3:16:16I'm not sure. It will put pressure on Fernstadt and Anna. The tricky

3:16:16 > 3:16:2215th to negotiate, lovely from Herrmann. My work, she has had a

3:16:22 > 3:16:28good Olympic Games. She goes 51.8, which we thought she would need to

3:16:28 > 3:16:33crank the pressure up on the other five looking for medals. That was an

3:16:33 > 3:16:38incredible run by her. She has the fastest push of all the Germans. She

3:16:38 > 3:16:42is tiny, tucks into the sled. That was a beautiful run, really

3:16:42 > 3:16:48perfectly, almost full list, just to watch the times and splits get

3:16:48 > 3:16:51faster and faster, and her lead getting bigger and bigger. Look at

3:16:51 > 3:16:56her, that is how to come out. Her eyes are looking into corner 12

3:16:56 > 3:17:04where she wants to enter. A very good run by Tina, the German, there.

3:17:04 > 3:17:08Very impressive indeed. That now means the likes of Laura Deas,

3:17:08 > 3:17:12Jacqueline Loelling, Lizzy Yarnold, they really need to be on their

3:17:12 > 3:17:21game. 52 seconds may not be good enough.

3:17:21 > 3:17:23enough. Carbon copy here, Anna Fernstadt, improvements seen right

3:17:23 > 3:17:31the way through the competition. She is just 14 hundredths off Loelling

3:17:31 > 3:17:36in third place. Laura Deas to come next, of course. Fernstadt needs to

3:17:36 > 3:17:41do what Herrmann has just done. The start is a little bit slower, but

3:17:41 > 3:17:45that will be the best out of her competition so far. She is giving

3:17:45 > 3:17:51110%. She wants to beat her German rival, the sliders are probable you

3:17:51 > 3:17:55best friends. But when you get here on race day, you are in your own.

3:17:55 > 3:18:01You had to get to the bottom as fast as you can. So far, this is looking

3:18:01 > 3:18:08clean and looking good. Little bit... She is having to control it

3:18:08 > 3:18:12there. Slightly controlled the skid, but so far, pretty clean. The time

3:18:12 > 3:18:17is bleeding away a little bit more. Like most of the Germans, can she

3:18:17 > 3:18:22make it back in the bottom three corners? They are good at that, good

3:18:22 > 3:18:27at holding speed. Herrmann had her nose in front, keeps her nose in

3:18:27 > 3:18:33front. Herrmann goes up to fifth place as Fernstadt drops back.Wow.

3:18:33 > 3:18:42Maybe the 52 second Mark isn't enough. These are the small margins.

3:18:42 > 3:18:48Six hundredths of a second is the blink of an eye. The bottom line is,

3:18:48 > 3:18:53the next four chasing medals have do be right on it.You could see she

3:18:53 > 3:18:59was longer on the exit of nine, the sled and her runners stayed on for

3:18:59 > 3:19:03longer. She didn't have the right angle. Just had the fight at the end

3:19:03 > 3:19:12of the straight. Hold it together! How are we all? Laura Deas goes next

3:19:12 > 3:19:18for Great Britain in fourth place. It doesn't tell the measure of her

3:19:18 > 3:19:24consistency at this Olympic Games. Let's not forget as well, for Laura,

3:19:24 > 3:19:29her first Olympic Games, aged 29. Stunningly consistent, good starter.

3:19:29 > 3:19:35We want that 51.8 or better. First, though, we need the usual good

3:19:35 > 3:19:40start. Can she get under 5.1 here to get a cracking shot at this? She has

3:19:40 > 3:19:47got it. Laura Deas has a super start. She matches her start from

3:19:47 > 3:19:51run three. Can she hold it together now? She has to stay calm. She will

3:19:51 > 3:19:58have seen everyone leaving the changing rooms, look at her there.

3:19:58 > 3:20:03Perfect lines and perfect sliding. Hold it together, Laura.Four temps

3:20:03 > 3:20:09up on Hermann. She has her eyes on the middle if she can.She has to

3:20:09 > 3:20:14come out clean. Little clip, and now she can't clip into the corner just

3:20:14 > 3:20:18if. Perfect. She has improved on that. We have do hope the exit of

3:20:18 > 3:20:24nine was enough to keep moving up the leaderboard.Lovely, right up

3:20:24 > 3:20:30the middle, dead centre, slightly high on the entrance to 16. She is

3:20:30 > 3:20:35confirmed at fourth at the very worst. Laura Deas has done all she

3:20:35 > 3:20:44can. Will it be enough, though? 51.9, I'm not sure. I'm sure she

3:20:44 > 3:20:47would have occurred 51.8.She was slowly losing time the further she

3:20:47 > 3:20:53got down the track towards the bottom. She had an incredible start.

3:20:53 > 3:20:58You could see she was not as relaxed as on her previous run. She knows

3:20:58 > 3:21:03that badly she wants to move up. Just there, that's what did it. She

3:21:03 > 3:21:08didn't have the perfect line that she had on the run before. She did

3:21:08 > 3:21:12perfect her steer and didn't clip. Let's see what's going to happen.

3:21:12 > 3:21:17She has moved on up. She is still up on the leaderboard, standing in

3:21:17 > 3:21:22first place.Look how close Hermann got to her. Laura Deas, confirmed

3:21:22 > 3:21:29fourth, can it get any better for her? Jacqueline Loelling, two years

3:21:29 > 3:21:32of complete excellence. She admitted to nerves at the very start of the

3:21:32 > 3:21:40competition, and they have shown. Loelling, funnily enough, has two 52

3:21:40 > 3:21:46second runs to learning. If she does that here, Loelling is in trouble.

3:21:46 > 3:21:50She has had a magnificent two years, really, the world's best.Loelling

3:21:50 > 3:21:54is ranked number one in the world and she has a full nominal track

3:21:54 > 3:22:00record. She has been up there winning medals, week in, week out.

3:22:00 > 3:22:04Four podium finishes. She does truly believed to be up here on the

3:22:04 > 3:22:10podium.How does it look to you?The deficit is still from the start,

3:22:10 > 3:22:14Laura started quicker. But she is making little mistakes it. Is this

3:22:14 > 3:22:19going to be the run that sees Laura Deas move up into a medal? That is a

3:22:19 > 3:22:23big skid there. That could be the mistake that gives Laura Deas what

3:22:23 > 3:22:27she needs. Still building speed. I don't know how she comes down to the

3:22:27 > 3:22:33bottom of the track.Second last curve, wide on it, nothing between

3:22:33 > 3:22:37Loelling and Laura Deas. Loelling just touches Laura Deas out. She

3:22:37 > 3:22:43does what she does all of the time, and that is find speed very, very

3:22:43 > 3:22:49late. She has got amazing credentials. Loelling guaranteed a

3:22:49 > 3:22:54medal.The Germans are just so good at this. They're not the best

3:22:54 > 3:22:59starters in the world, and yet, they build speed with every single corner

3:22:59 > 3:23:04down every single track in the world. They get faster and faster

3:23:04 > 3:23:10and find it somehow. Their equipment works so well for them. Look at her

3:23:10 > 3:23:14there, beautiful position. She nailed that. She wasn't as straight

3:23:14 > 3:23:19as she wanted to, but it was better than Laura's run. Look at her there,

3:23:19 > 3:23:24she is world number one, and can she now creep up and maybe get world

3:23:24 > 3:23:30number one in this Olympics and get a gold? Is it enough?Lizzy Yarnold

3:23:30 > 3:23:34next, the Olympic champion, can she make history and win it again? First

3:23:34 > 3:23:41things first before Janine Flock goes, Lizzy has got to stay ahead of

3:23:41 > 3:23:45Loelling.She started well and needs to focus on her against the track.

3:23:45 > 3:23:50This is what it is all about now. Don't worry about the German or

3:23:50 > 3:23:54Austrian, she needs a perfect run. She cannot make a mistake at all on

3:23:54 > 3:23:58this run. Everything is looking good so far. The lines are good, good

3:23:58 > 3:24:04control. Good speed as the corner drops away now. Into nine. This is

3:24:04 > 3:24:11crucial. She has the tuck. Look at the Gap, she's got half a second. Is

3:24:11 > 3:24:14this the run that gives her her second gold medal and defend her job

3:24:14 > 3:24:21as an Olympic champion?Just bend 15 to negotiate. A big lead over

3:24:21 > 3:24:25Loelling. This could be silver bull is the Yarnold. She goes to the

3:24:25 > 3:24:31front and how! Look at the time, 51.46 to pile the pressure on Janine

3:24:31 > 3:24:36Flock!That is a gold medal winning run, I'm sure of it. We are looking

3:24:36 > 3:24:43at a two time Olympic champion. Janine Flock to come, though. What

3:24:43 > 3:24:48pressure now on the Austrian. Lizzy Yarnold, a sensational final run.

3:24:48 > 3:24:53She knows it as well. She does know it. That was a track record,

3:24:53 > 3:24:58unbelievable. She made a mistake there, but she had so much time in

3:24:58 > 3:25:02her bag to be able to play with. Janine Flock is going to be up there

3:25:02 > 3:25:06in the changing room, it is silent in the changing room. She is the

3:25:06 > 3:25:11only one there. She knows this run has to be the run of her life to be

3:25:11 > 3:25:16able to take over the lead. But I'm not sure she can do it. I believe

3:25:16 > 3:25:20Lizzy Yarnold has put down potentially a gold medal run. Come

3:25:20 > 3:25:25on, Janine, hold it together, girl. You have a good bridge. She can do

3:25:25 > 3:25:31this, mentally, she needs to focus now.For Austria, who have never won

3:25:31 > 3:25:35a medal, Janine Flock, former world number one, needs the run of her 28

3:25:35 > 3:25:41years to tip out Lizzy Yarnold. It looks a big ask. She has a decent

3:25:41 > 3:25:47enough start, though. That is not going to be enough. She made a

3:25:47 > 3:25:50little mistake there. This will drop away, that is all the time she has

3:25:50 > 3:25:58lost. This is how good Lizzy's run will have been. Can she build it up

3:25:58 > 3:26:03as she comes down the run? This is not about her staying in front of

3:26:03 > 3:26:08Lizzy, this is come is you going to drop behind the silver or even the

3:26:08 > 3:26:13bronze? It is a big gap to Laura Deas. The run is good, it looks like

3:26:13 > 3:26:17she will hold onto bronze medal position. Time is dropping away.

3:26:17 > 3:26:22Dropping away all the time. It looks like Lizzy Yarnold is going to win

3:26:22 > 3:26:27gold again. Has Laura Deas got a medal in her? Flock goes forth.

3:26:27 > 3:26:36Yarnold wins gold again!Yes! Yes! Laura Deas has won bronze as well.

3:26:36 > 3:26:40Lizzy Yarnold, what a performance, the first British athlete to

3:26:40 > 3:26:44successfully defend her Olympic title. And for Laura Deas, who

3:26:44 > 3:26:50dream. Medals at Badminton, she has now got one at the Olympic Games.

3:26:50 > 3:26:56Janine Flock crestfallen, you have got to feel for her. That, having

3:26:56 > 3:27:01started off in the lead, missing out on a medal is a killer for her. But

3:27:01 > 3:27:07Lizzy Yarnold's done it again, and a great day for Great Britain at the

3:27:07 > 3:27:11Winter Olympics!I just want to give... I am so happy for our girls,

3:27:11 > 3:27:16but I want to give Janine a hug. I have slid with Janine my entire

3:27:16 > 3:27:21life. I know how much she wants the medal. She wasn't able to hold it

3:27:21 > 3:27:25together and she made those tiny mistakes. My heart goes out to

3:27:25 > 3:27:31Janine, look at her coach, Mickey. She couldn't keep it together. That

3:27:31 > 3:27:37is where Lizzy is so strong, mentally. Lizzy is so tough, and she

3:27:37 > 3:27:42knows how to win. We now have a gold medal again, and we have a bronze

3:27:42 > 3:27:47medal by Laura Deas. She thought she had lost it like Dom did in the men.

3:27:47 > 3:27:53Her fiance is there. There will be a big party tonight in Team GB.In

3:27:53 > 3:27:55Winter Olympics history, Great Britain have never won three medals

3:27:55 > 3:28:03in a single day. Earlier, of course, Izzy Atkin's wonderful bronze, and

3:28:03 > 3:28:06two here, continuing Great Britain's unbelievable run of success in

3:28:06 > 3:28:12women's skeleton. It's a story that you couldn't have made up, the stuff

3:28:12 > 3:28:16of dreams. It certainly is. This is where skeleton now, British

3:28:16 > 3:28:22skeleton, has been a Sport in women's sport, to dominate in the

3:28:22 > 3:28:26world in both men and women. This sport is about to move on leaps and

3:28:26 > 3:28:32bounds.You've just got to take your hat off to Lizzy. This winter,

3:28:32 > 3:28:39myself included, she had basically two decent World Cup runs. The rest

3:28:39 > 3:28:44was a bit of disaster, to be honest with you. How she put herself right

3:28:44 > 3:28:49for the big day when it counts, it illustrates what a big game player

3:28:49 > 3:28:57she is. Two gold medals. An real. Only certain athletes can deal with

3:28:57 > 3:29:01the pressure and it is such a hard place to be, leading, and you had to

3:29:01 > 3:29:06put down the run of your life like Jenin. I feel for her so badly. She

3:29:06 > 3:29:12so wanted a medal and to get gold. She wasn't good enough today, and

3:29:12 > 3:29:15she couldn't put down four consistent runs, like Lizzy and

3:29:15 > 3:29:20Laura. A massive shout out to the entire British team. The support

3:29:20 > 3:29:25structure that goes behind those two girls winning those medals from

3:29:25 > 3:29:29Danny hold Croft, the head of performance, who has been their

3:29:29 > 3:29:33strength and conditioning coach over the years, Andy Schmidt at the head

3:29:33 > 3:29:40coach at the top, Rachel Blackman built and designed their sleds with

3:29:40 > 3:29:46James Rock, everyone else within the team, so many people to thank for

3:29:46 > 3:29:51the performance of the two girls. Here is Lizzy, then. My word, what a

3:29:51 > 3:29:57moment for British sport. And the discussions were beforehand, Flock,

3:29:57 > 3:30:01Loelling, superb exponents of this sport, never have tasted this

3:30:01 > 3:30:08pressure before. Lizzy thrives on it.She certainly does. This is what

3:30:08 > 3:30:12happens. A little bit of pressure, her second run yesterday, she was

3:30:12 > 3:30:16all over the place. She dropped back from gold into second position. But

3:30:16 > 3:30:23then, today her first run was good. That last run was absolutely

3:30:23 > 3:30:26phenomenal from Lizzy. You could see the other three competitors at the

3:30:26 > 3:30:32bottom, when they saw the time, they were like that... Wow. That is

3:30:32 > 3:30:35phenomenal. That is what champions are made of.Jacqueline Loelling

3:30:35 > 3:30:43there. So young, so brilliant, but second place for her. Germany, of

3:30:43 > 3:30:54course, have effectively no great track record in this event.

3:30:54 > 3:31:03A couple have finished behind Amy Williams. What happened there is

3:31:03 > 3:31:06that potentially, Janine Flock would have been able to see the clock and

3:31:06 > 3:31:17has put her off.

3:31:24 > 3:31:29Celebrations all-round! CLARE BALDING: Lizzy Yarnold has done it,

3:31:29 > 3:31:32the only gold medallist from the Sochi Olympics becomes the first

3:31:32 > 3:31:36winter Olympian from this country ever to successfully defend her

3:31:36 > 3:31:40title. And Great Britain move to 16th on that board, the first time

3:31:40 > 3:31:46ever that the team has won three medals on the same day at a Winter

3:31:46 > 3:31:50Olympics. One gold and now three bronze and for the first time ever

3:31:50 > 3:31:55that two athletes from this country have finished in the top three of

3:31:55 > 3:32:01the same event. Lizzy Yarnold, at the age of 29, cannot believe what

3:32:01 > 3:32:05she has achieved. This is a fabulous comeback from an athlete who had

3:32:05 > 3:32:11achieved everything. In 2015, she reigned supreme. She was European

3:32:11 > 3:32:15and World Cup holder. She could win it all. She stepped away, then came

3:32:15 > 3:32:21back. She had to fight her way back. This is her first win and the most

3:32:21 > 3:32:26important win, the only win that matters, since she stepped back into

3:32:26 > 3:32:31that team. Full credit to the skeleton setup, to her family and to

3:32:31 > 3:32:35Laura Deas. Because Laura Deas has pushed her all year. They have

3:32:35 > 3:32:41trained together and for Laura to a medal as well is so just. Alex

3:32:41 > 3:32:44Coomber is alongside me, bronze medallist from Salt Lake City. This

3:32:44 > 3:32:48is a day you must be so proud of, because you started this happening

3:32:48 > 3:32:54again and now there are two of them on the podium. To be honest, when I

3:32:54 > 3:32:58started, I was competing in World Cups and doing well and nobody knew

3:32:58 > 3:33:03what a skeleton was. You had to explain yourself constantly. We went

3:33:03 > 3:33:08to races where one man and his dog might be watching. In the last 16

3:33:08 > 3:33:14years, sometimes I think, what have I done? I am literally lost for

3:33:14 > 3:33:19words, it is incredible. We said one medal, hopefully two. On the day,

3:33:19 > 3:33:24they kept their heads look where we are. They have both come through the

3:33:24 > 3:33:28talent ID programme, Girls For Gold. This is a tremendous moment for

3:33:28 > 3:33:32girls everywhere who think, could I become an Olympic champion? And I

3:33:32 > 3:33:38end up at the Winter Olympics? Well, you could. The list of success in

3:33:38 > 3:33:41skeleton for the third Olympics in a row, Great Britain takes the gold

3:33:41 > 3:33:52medal. But Alex Coomber here said things off.

3:33:52 > 3:33:55things off. I wonder whether this might be the last time we see Lizzy

3:33:55 > 3:34:02Yarnold at a major competition. What else would be left to achieve?Yeah,

3:34:02 > 3:34:07what does she do? I know what Lizzy is like. If she decides she has

3:34:07 > 3:34:10achieved everything, she will just find another challenge and I'm sure

3:34:10 > 3:34:15she will be successful. This is so impressive. She said they track

3:34:15 > 3:34:23record on her fourth and final run. She was chasing Janine Flock. She

3:34:23 > 3:34:27didn't have much in hand over Jacqueline Loelling, but this run

3:34:27 > 3:34:32means she wins the gold medal by more than half a second.Of all the

3:34:32 > 3:34:36runs, that last one was her best. You could see that she knew she had

3:34:36 > 3:34:42nothing to lose. She was confident that she knew how to drive this

3:34:42 > 3:34:47track to the best of her abilities and she did her stuff.Let's see it

3:34:47 > 3:34:53from the beginning again. You said that her build and although her

3:34:53 > 3:34:58mental attitude have put her in a good position for this course on

3:34:58 > 3:35:01this day.Literally, nothing seems to faze her. She gets on her sled.

3:35:01 > 3:35:07She is not the fastest starter, but she always has a decent start and

3:35:07 > 3:35:12she is good at relaxing quickly. She doesn't get fazed by the fact that

3:35:12 > 3:35:18she can't be the perfect run. She knows there are some tricky corners.

3:35:18 > 3:35:22And in this run, she went through the difficult areas really well,

3:35:22 > 3:35:30picking up speed constantly.And even

3:35:30 > 3:35:35even that speed, she is thinking ahead.Definitely. Once you are

3:35:35 > 3:35:39through the tricky bits, the best thing is to relax, and she never

3:35:39 > 3:35:43loses that. Some of the sliders have a hit and a panic, but she never

3:35:43 > 3:35:48lets up faze her. She just relaxed back into it and picked up speed

3:35:48 > 3:35:53down the bottom of the track.Great champions are consistent. They work

3:35:53 > 3:35:57hard, have comportment and are competitive, but the greatest pull

3:35:57 > 3:36:00out the run of their lives at the moment that it matters the most, and

3:36:00 > 3:36:04that is what Lizzy Yarnold has done this afternoon. She was short of

3:36:04 > 3:36:08breath and dizzy after her first run. She has been struggling with a

3:36:08 > 3:36:11sinus problem. She has been struggling to believe she was still

3:36:11 > 3:36:15the best in the world. Today, it has all come together in the most

3:36:15 > 3:36:20magnificent way. She can recover from the odd bump. She is a double

3:36:20 > 3:36:30Olympic champion.Incredible. Of course she wanted to win a medal,

3:36:30 > 3:36:34but the relief of actually doing it... Everyone thought she would

3:36:34 > 3:36:39just turn up and walk away with it, but that is not what happens. The

3:36:39 > 3:36:43top four all changed places in that last run. We always said this would

3:36:43 > 3:36:49be an exciting race and would come down to the last 100m of the track.

3:36:49 > 3:36:54And it meant everyone had a chance. And Laura Deas, equally, going in

3:36:54 > 3:36:57for fastest, knew that with a good run she could move up the

3:36:57 > 3:37:01leaderboard. In the end, it took a mistake from Janine Flock to move

3:37:01 > 3:37:07her up the table. Talk us through this.Laura Deas has been so

3:37:07 > 3:37:08consistent on this track

3:37:08 > 3:37:12this.Laura Deas has been so consistent on this track. To have

3:37:12 > 3:37:16some of the fastest times in training, it is a difficult track. A

3:37:16 > 3:37:19lot of the other women took a long time to learn how to drive this

3:37:19 > 3:37:24track. Six runs is nothing, literally six minutes of practice in

3:37:24 > 3:37:26preparation for an Olympic final. But she knew she could control

3:37:26 > 3:37:32herself well. She is good at understanding the principles of

3:37:32 > 3:37:37driving a sled. She has been in the sport for a long time and she is a

3:37:37 > 3:37:44very fluid driver, very neat. She has nailed some of the difficult

3:37:44 > 3:37:48parts of this track, which a lot of the other girls didn't do. That

3:37:48 > 3:37:52meant she was consistent and all of her runs were pretty similar and

3:37:52 > 3:38:00really good.Laura and Lizzy also started at the same time in 2009.

3:38:00 > 3:38:05They are both 29. Their families are good friends because they have been

3:38:05 > 3:38:09on the circuit together for so long. So as a team effort, they are

3:38:09 > 3:38:14together and Lizzy will be as pleased that Laura has a medal as

3:38:14 > 3:38:19she is to have won it.Laura has had to really fight for her place on

3:38:19 > 3:38:23this team. She has done some of the minor international circuits and has

3:38:23 > 3:38:28had to work her way up into the World Cup team and qualify for the

3:38:28 > 3:38:31Olympics. At her first Olympics, to come away with a bronze medal is

3:38:31 > 3:38:41awesome.It is testament to the skeleton team. So impressive. These

3:38:41 > 3:38:45are the lives seems, Laura Deas on the right, Lizzy Yarnold laughing in

3:38:45 > 3:38:49the middle. They can't believe they are both on the podium, the first

3:38:49 > 3:38:54time that this has happened with Winter Olympics British athletes!

3:38:54 > 3:38:59Scenes of joy and happiness as Laura Deas steps up to receive her mascot,

3:38:59 > 3:39:05the white tiger, the mascot of these Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. She has

3:39:05 > 3:39:12finished third. She is on the podium in the women's skeleton. And the

3:39:12 > 3:39:19silver medallist, credit to her, Jacqueline Loelling of Germany. Real

3:39:19 > 3:39:22strength in this competition from the Germans. They had three in the

3:39:22 > 3:39:30top six.

3:39:30 > 3:39:35top six. And now we have the double Olympic champion, the gold

3:39:35 > 3:39:49medallist, Lizzy Yarnold.First place, Great Britain! Lizzy Yarnold!

3:39:54 > 3:39:59She was so brave in setting this out as her target, "I'm going there to

3:39:59 > 3:40:08do one thing, to make history". Ladies and gentlemen, the athletes!

3:40:08 > 3:40:12So we don't get a national anthem at this stage. That will happen later

3:40:12 > 3:40:17in the Medal Plaza when she receives her gold medal, but she is saying to

3:40:17 > 3:40:22Laura and Jacqueline Loelling, come up here, let's have a hug. It is a

3:40:22 > 3:40:25close community. The skeleton athletes know what they have been

3:40:25 > 3:40:31through. Look at that shot, look at that leaderboard. Two British

3:40:31 > 3:40:34athletes in gold and bronze medal position in the skeleton at the

3:40:34 > 3:40:40Winter Olympics.

3:40:40 > 3:40:42Winter Olympics. What a moment and it means that Lizzy Yarnold cements

3:40:42 > 3:40:48her place in sporting history.

3:40:57 > 3:41:01The British ice hockey team has been covering itself in glory at the

3:41:01 > 3:41:07Olympics. They defeated Japan and Canada, considered the best team at

3:41:07 > 3:41:14Garmisch-Partenkirchen.When all the points were added up, Jeannette

3:41:14 > 3:41:20Altwegg has won the Olympic figure skating title. It looks like a good

3:41:20 > 3:41:27start. This is a fast run by the Britons. They could be on their way

3:41:27 > 3:41:33to a gold medal.

3:41:34 > 3:41:36to a gold medal.Superb artistry, superb athleticism. John Curry did

3:41:36 > 3:41:45not put a foot wrong.Robin Cousins completes his long free skating

3:41:45 > 3:41:50programme to a great round of applause. Cousins, the gold

3:41:50 > 3:41:55medallist of 1980.

3:41:56 > 3:41:59medallist of 1980.The people are standing and applauding. The Union

3:41:59 > 3:42:03Jacks are flying around the rink. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean

3:42:03 > 3:42:09have won the gold medal.

3:42:09 > 3:42:12have won the gold medal. It's looking good. She's done it! Its

3:42:12 > 3:42:22Olympic gold for Great Britain. Surely it is gold for Great Britain!

3:42:22 > 3:42:29Oh, yes! Amy Williams is the queen of speed in Canada. There goes Lizzy

3:42:29 > 3:42:37Yarnold. She's going to win the gold medal, surely! Lizzy Yarnold is the

3:42:37 > 3:42:44Olympic champion, oh, my goodness! The Olympic champion, can she make

3:42:44 > 3:42:51history and win it again? A sensational final run! Lizzy

3:42:51 > 3:42:54Yarnold, what a performance, the first British athlete to

3:42:54 > 3:43:00successfully defend her Olympic title!So since 1924, Great Britain

3:43:00 > 3:43:06have only won 11 gold medals at the Winter Olympics and never before had

3:43:06 > 3:43:10anyone won two. Today that changes, because Lizzy Yarnold has done it.

3:43:10 > 3:43:16She came back to defend her title. Alex, put into context how difficult

3:43:16 > 3:43:22that was to achieve and how much we should admire her for doing it.We

3:43:22 > 3:43:26have said that no female has tried to retain this title. One reason is

3:43:26 > 3:43:33because it is so hard. The four years of training, this is a brutal

3:43:33 > 3:43:37sport, physically, emotionally, mentally. You are away for half the

3:43:37 > 3:43:42year, separated from family. So to go through all of that having won

3:43:42 > 3:43:47wants and to even come back and try again when ultimately, she had a

3:43:47 > 3:43:50high chance of failure, having not done particularly well in the

3:43:50 > 3:43:54season, but to have the mental grip to come back and say, I don't care,

3:43:54 > 3:43:59I am going to show you what I can do.Brilliantly summed up. While

3:43:59 > 3:44:03everyone in skeleton syllabus, the world of short track speed skating

3:44:03 > 3:44:09cries with Elise Christie, because Sarah, once again today, it was an

3:44:09 > 3:44:13event that finished in desperate scenes as Elise Christie was taken

3:44:13 > 3:44:17away on a stretcher after this incident in the semifinals of the

3:44:17 > 3:44:241500m.It's a terrible shame for Elise. That is two distances down.

3:44:24 > 3:44:28We still have one to go. We have had the good news that nothing is

3:44:28 > 3:44:33broken. She will be back on Tuesday and she has put it all down to the

3:44:33 > 3:44:37last day, but we need to all get behind her and wish her all the

3:44:37 > 3:44:45best. Hopefully, she can pull it out of the bag.Jon, we see her being
