0:00:20 > 0:00:26Welcome back to continued coverage of Winter Olympics. Great Britain's

0:00:26 > 0:00:31women currently in action against China. They're trailing 5-3 and

0:00:31 > 0:00:36these are the absolutely crucial shots at the end of end 7. Here is

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Steve Cram.

0:00:37 > 0:00:43shots at the end of end 7. Here is Steve Cram. Eve Muirhead with two

0:00:43 > 0:00:49stones left. That of course means they have the advantage. Cheers

0:00:49 > 0:00:55ringing around. I will update you with Korea in a few moments. But Eve

0:00:55 > 0:01:01Muirhead, they're starting to find a bit of form now. Got the chance to

0:01:01 > 0:01:10take this Korean stone out. Wants to try and make it difficult for the

0:01:10 > 0:01:18Chinese skip. So still sitting 2. That is important. The minimum they

0:01:18 > 0:01:24would have wanted from this end. Just a little hint of a smile there

0:01:24 > 0:01:30from Eve Muirhead. She has played some nice shots towards the end of

0:01:30 > 0:01:34the previous end. We forced the 1. Now with a chance perhaps of a 2

0:01:34 > 0:01:45here or at least giving themselves that opportunity.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50Wang will want to make this as difficult for Eve Muirhead to get a

0:01:50 > 0:01:542. Needs to lie shot after this.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02She has asked to play a similar shot that she played the shot before. But

0:02:02 > 0:02:15this looks like it's not going to get the roll either.No.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22She knows it's fine.If Great Britain has been lying shot, you

0:02:22 > 0:02:25could have drawn in for their second. If they're unsure, they're

0:02:25 > 0:02:31going to hit this on the nose, pick up a 2 and they're straight back in

0:02:31 > 0:02:43the game.Final stone for Eve Muirhead in end 7.

0:02:43 > 0:02:54Needs the 2. To tie this match up. Needs to hit this China red. Nicely

0:02:54 > 0:03:04on the Ness. -- nicely on the nose. Well done. So... 5-5 after 7 ends.

0:03:04 > 0:03:10It has been a struggle, but just beginning to become a good contest

0:03:10 > 0:03:14between do teams. China have been playing well. Advantage missed an

0:03:14 > 0:03:21opportunity where it could have been 6-3. It wasn't, it was 5-3 and

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Britain thankfully have capitalised on that mistake and managed to tie

0:03:24 > 0:03:31this up after 7. Elsewhere, I mentioned Korea, they now have a 5-3

0:03:31 > 0:03:39lead over Japan. They picked up another one. They had a steal again.

0:03:39 > 0:03:50Switzerland are leading United States 5-3. In a tight match between

0:03:50 > 0:03:55Sweden and Canada, Sweden just with the edge 5-4.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04Happier, Jackie?Yes, we are right back in the game now.I'm happy the

0:04:04 > 0:04:13biscuits have appeared! And I'm happy because Eve Muirhead is a

0:04:13 > 0:04:19little happier. We are at the business end of this game. Into 8, 9

0:04:19 > 0:04:26and 10.

0:04:26 > 0:04:32Line's good. They have to remain focussed and not give away an easy

0:04:32 > 0:04:362. Make it as difficult as possible.

0:04:40 > 0:04:45A lot of rotation on these stones. Coming in at the end.Just finishes

0:04:45 > 0:04:55nicely. Top tee, exactly where you want it to be.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00want it to be.I was mentioning how Wang had a great start to her career

0:05:00 > 0:05:04in the World Championships, Olympic Games, eight or nine years ago.

0:05:04 > 0:05:09Continued that success for a while. Then took some time-out to become a

0:05:09 > 0:05:18mother. And then after well almost three years out came back had the

0:05:18 > 0:05:24World Championships and the next Olympics will be in Beijing, a lot

0:05:24 > 0:05:30of investment going into winter sports in China. The men just missed

0:05:30 > 0:05:34the medal in Sochi. Taking part here the men. No, they're not are they?

0:05:34 > 0:05:48No. That is in the mixed doubles. They made the semi-final I think if

0:05:48 > 0:05:52memory serves me correct.

0:05:52 > 0:06:00It was ages ago!I know! What day is it?It actually started the mixed

0:06:00 > 0:06:10doubles only one week ago.Only a week ago.One week ago today.A

0:06:10 > 0:06:17heavy schedule here at the Curling Centre. But we are always on,

0:06:17 > 0:06:28whatever the weather is doing outside. Curling all the way.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32outside. Curling all the way. That long guard set by Lauren Gray. And

0:06:32 > 0:06:36the corner guard in place for China. Just going to try and come in behind

0:06:36 > 0:06:43it.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47These girls are giving it everything, you can hear them

0:06:47 > 0:06:52huffing and puffing.Good shot though.Yes.I have been impressed

0:06:52 > 0:07:03with the youngster. Very consistent.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11They all now need to make these shots if they're going to win this

0:07:11 > 0:07:15match. China with a hammer in this eighth end and then it will be the

0:07:15 > 0:07:21final end as well, the 10th, unless we get a blank end at some point.

0:07:21 > 0:07:29They all need to play good shots and a good one there from Vicki Adams.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33That was a nice call. That is when you don't want to make a mistake -

0:07:33 > 0:07:38when there's a shot behind the corner. Great Britain still lying 2

0:07:38 > 0:07:43here. Both of them in the top half of the circle. Not much to choose

0:07:43 > 0:07:49between the two seconds. Those statistics don't always tell all of

0:07:49 > 0:08:00the full story. Never quite sure who is having to make the tougher shots.

0:08:12 > 0:08:21Just hangs on at the back. You didn't seem to be too bothered

0:08:21 > 0:08:29sweeping that out at the back there. Another opportunity for Vicki Adams

0:08:29 > 0:08:38to play a nice controlled break down here.

0:08:49 > 0:08:56Just tapped the British stone out. But it was still a good shot. A hair

0:08:56 > 0:09:01high?

0:09:01 > 0:09:09high? We have had a few hair widths earlier on today. You may think, it

0:09:09 > 0:09:17genuinely is at time, remember that shot that Vicki Adams had this

0:09:17 > 0:09:21morning that literally just changed the whole end and in the end lost

0:09:21 > 0:09:26the match. It wasn't her shot, but it led to things happening after

0:09:26 > 0:09:27that.

0:09:37 > 0:09:45They over curled. So they just need to split the house here and ensure

0:09:45 > 0:09:52they lie two stones. If you're watching this in your lunch hour,

0:09:52 > 0:09:56back home, lucky you, if you're having any lunch. I can't remember

0:09:56 > 0:10:06the last time I was fed! An in joke here, I'm worried about my belly! I

0:10:06 > 0:10:13know during the day people are enjoying the curling and plenty more

0:10:13 > 0:10:17to come. Through the weekend as well. All the way through into the

0:10:17 > 0:10:25last day. Eve Muir head's team are to make to it the final it is the

0:10:25 > 0:10:31very last day a week on Sunday. Actually it would be midnight a week

0:10:31 > 0:10:39on Saturday for you at home. Let's hope we can make a date for then.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43But an awful lot of good curling they're going to have to play to get

0:10:43 > 0:10:53that far.

0:10:54 > 0:11:00Bingyu asking her team to come down here and tap the yellow out. They

0:11:00 > 0:11:04have to be careful, because they have got to get past the high guard.

0:11:04 > 0:11:10You saw those stats which have always been a bit in and out. Not

0:11:10 > 0:11:14been the most consistent performance from her. She has been OK with some

0:11:14 > 0:11:22of these shots with weight.

0:11:22 > 0:11:27of these shots with weight. Manages to get that one out there. But

0:11:27 > 0:11:38that's... Very easy to see. If you're Eve at this point, three

0:11:38 > 0:11:41stones left, Jackie, you were talking about trying to split the

0:11:41 > 0:11:49house.It is key that she, when she's playing these shots stays in

0:11:49 > 0:11:56the house. That makes it much more difficult for China to pick up 2

0:11:56 > 0:12:01here. This is going to hit and roll though. So there is an opportunity

0:12:01 > 0:12:08to come down and tap a red, remove the yellow. She can actually only,

0:12:08 > 0:12:14all she needs to hit is half of it. She can roll across to the side of

0:12:14 > 0:12:24the sheet. We needed to keep our shooter in the house there.

0:12:40 > 0:12:46Zhou Yan, has she got enough of that? Now a British one stays and

0:12:46 > 0:12:53has the Chinese one gone? It has. Well not a good shot from her.She

0:12:53 > 0:13:01didn't connect with enough of it.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03didn't connect with enough of it.So the opportunities are presented to

0:13:03 > 0:13:08them in the last couple of ends, they have fnt taken. They had a

0:13:08 > 0:13:15chance to go 6-3 ahead. In the sixth it was. In the sixth end. Didn't

0:13:15 > 0:13:23take that one. You might think Eve has not done well. If you're

0:13:23 > 0:13:28wondering how that is made up, each shot they play is marked out of

0:13:28 > 0:13:35four. So if it is a four out of four you get 100%. But one you get 25%.

0:13:35 > 0:13:43Etc. A worried look on Eve Muirhead's face. A little concerned

0:13:43 > 0:13:51again.She wants to get the right angle on this. She doesn't want to

0:13:51 > 0:13:59jam it on the back. She has rolled across. That is a pretty good

0:13:59 > 0:14:10effort. She is getting a little hoarse there. That won't bother her.

0:14:10 > 0:14:16She has played some really nice shots the last two or three ends,

0:14:16 > 0:14:21Eve Muirhead, we keep saying this, all you can do is make your shots,

0:14:21 > 0:14:32if the opposition make theirs, fair enough. Make yours. So Wang...She

0:14:32 > 0:14:37has played a good shot. She hit and rolled across, but it is behind the

0:14:37 > 0:14:43T. And this an opportunity for Bingyu to come down, sit on top of

0:14:43 > 0:14:51it and make it very difficult for Eve to remove it.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56Eve to remove it. China do have the hammer and this is the first stone.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00Just that graphic was wrong there it has been taken off. It said this was

0:15:00 > 0:15:03the last stone it is not.

0:15:13 > 0:15:23They want want any bounds.Just the one food. She's played this draw

0:15:23 > 0:15:28down here quite a cute times. Not always with great success but this

0:15:28 > 0:15:35one looks much better. A little wide.

0:15:36 > 0:15:44You can see what Eve wants to do. That's not sitting right on top

0:15:44 > 0:15:51which is the way that Wang wanted.

0:15:51 > 0:16:04You heard what Eve said, I just need to get to the nose.

0:16:04 > 0:16:13And this week be a result if they managed to hold China to one. A

0:16:13 > 0:16:26Steel would be even better.Just a control tap, that weight.

0:16:32 > 0:16:45Looking good. Very good from Eve Muirhead.Two in a row.Very good.

0:16:45 > 0:16:53Added to the previous end. Just the one stone left here for China, wine,

0:16:53 > 0:17:00Great Britain with three stones in the house. Decisions. Exactly, she

0:17:00 > 0:17:06has got to decide what shot she wants to play, a couple of options,

0:17:06 > 0:17:12get it wrong, no room for error. She can play the same weight as Eve did,

0:17:12 > 0:17:20the hack weight, it get it fully on the nose and tap it back or as we

0:17:20 > 0:17:25have seen her do so many times, the draw.I would not play the draw if I

0:17:25 > 0:17:32were her. No. Varying degrees of success, I think you are right. A

0:17:32 > 0:17:47bit of weight. The draw is our act 66% come purge to the takeouts.

0:17:51 > 0:17:59So, this is the final stone of the eighth end. The best that China can

0:17:59 > 0:18:11do is lie for one. Has she got this right? She has! China take one. Two

0:18:11 > 0:18:16ends left, one shot in it now. Although China lead this 6-5, it's

0:18:16 > 0:18:21been much better from Great Britain in three ends, not only did they

0:18:21 > 0:18:26stop them going three ahead, wine herself missed that opportunity,

0:18:26 > 0:18:33Great Britain close the gap, they have held China to one, two ends,

0:18:33 > 0:18:37China would have the hammer in the final end on less Great Britain

0:18:37 > 0:18:43decide to lag and end and take the hammer into the final end. Jackie,

0:18:43 > 0:18:52what would you do?I think the way the girls are playing at the moment,

0:18:52 > 0:18:59I think they would like to pick up two here, because that's a

0:18:59 > 0:19:03confidence booster, if you know you can perform well, play well, take

0:19:03 > 0:19:12two. But they have to have a bail out if things aren't going to plan.

0:19:12 > 0:19:19Perhaps convert the blank end and take the hammer down the last to get

0:19:19 > 0:19:29two in the last. Of course, everything Eve wants

0:19:29 > 0:19:33everything Eve wants to do, Bingyu will be trying to do the opposite.

0:19:33 > 0:19:39First and foremost, they have to go for two.Cancel all your afternoon

0:19:39 > 0:19:46appointments, stay with this, two more ends, Great Britain, I think if

0:19:46 > 0:19:49they pull this out of the bag, it would be a massive confidence

0:19:49 > 0:19:55booster. They began this match not playing well, got better as it has

0:19:55 > 0:20:06gone on, all to play for. Just come back to your point about

0:20:06 > 0:20:11back to your point about scoring, OK, get two, then it is 7-6. If they

0:20:11 > 0:20:22were tabled to hold China to one or steal, going to an extra end, they

0:20:22 > 0:20:27would have the hammer.

0:20:27 > 0:20:34would have the hammer.If and but.

0:20:36 > 0:20:42That's not what you are looking for.

0:20:46 > 0:20:52I was just going to say there's been a lot of scoring for one, either

0:20:52 > 0:20:59team, Bingyu scored, Eve scored two, they have not been converting to get

0:20:59 > 0:21:07on the board. Perhaps a big ask. Great Britain girls are getting

0:21:07 > 0:21:12stronger, unfortunately, an error from Lauren.Does not alter your

0:21:12 > 0:21:17thinking, this early in the end? Let's hope not.The strategy of the

0:21:17 > 0:21:25game? Blanking and end.We are still playing three guards. So... Instead

0:21:25 > 0:21:33of going to the wing, two corners, we've got to get... Two centre

0:21:33 > 0:21:42shops, you've got to try and come in behind this. That is a better shot

0:21:42 > 0:21:49from Lauren Gray.

0:22:02 > 0:22:14The guys seen, it took a big curl. Similar shot here.

0:22:19 > 0:22:27Four matches, three others apart from this, all pretty close affairs,

0:22:27 > 0:22:36little cap, well hidden. Pushing the Chinese stone out a little bit. Easy

0:22:36 > 0:22:46to see, Korea still leading Japan, Switzerland's 5-4, similar score

0:22:46 > 0:22:54over USA, Canada and Sweden are tied at five - five. Four very close

0:22:54 > 0:23:02matches.

0:23:02 > 0:23:10An opportunity now for China to get the inside of that yellow. Come

0:23:10 > 0:23:16across and hit the other one. She would be sitting in behind the two

0:23:16 > 0:23:22reds. Be quite keen to steal here.

0:23:30 > 0:23:39Well done!China certainly not going to make it easy for Great Britain at

0:23:39 > 0:23:45all.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53Eve has decided time to get rid of these guards.

0:24:01 > 0:24:06One sits in. At least there is only one now.

0:24:16 > 0:24:27Bingyu asking for another high guard.

0:24:32 > 0:24:37Zhou hasn't cleared this shot for a while. Let's see how accurate she

0:24:37 > 0:24:45can be.Quite accurate. We know from the weight comes off, it takes a

0:24:45 > 0:24:59pool.Enough. Not bad. Gives Great Britain a chance to use that.

0:25:00 > 0:25:06Get rid of both of these. Anna Sloan, needing a good shot all the

0:25:06 > 0:25:13way.

0:25:17 > 0:25:29Just missed that! So close!A little look to the heavens from Anna Sloan.

0:25:29 > 0:25:39Close!

0:25:41 > 0:25:47Still asking you the question, at what point do you decide what to do?

0:25:47 > 0:25:52Do you wait until the mistake happens, how far do you let it go?

0:25:52 > 0:25:57When is it irretrievable? The girls are trying to bail out now and the

0:25:57 > 0:26:03only way they can do that is left a couple of shots, only doing one at

0:26:03 > 0:26:07the moment. Trying to clear out that front. Here we see a change of tack

0:26:07 > 0:26:14ticks.

0:26:33 > 0:26:41Asking the question when whining gets to play her last two.

0:26:41 > 0:26:53Slow up. Slow up!And it just has as well.OK. Tucked in nicely. Hanging

0:26:53 > 0:27:01onto the button.

0:27:05 > 0:27:14Go back to this morning. The closing stages of the match, China were very

0:27:14 > 0:27:21much in control of that and let it slip away from them. They lost 7-6.

0:27:21 > 0:27:26Yes, I think it was a draw she failed to make. The last stone.

0:27:29 > 0:27:35Coming down the same side.

0:27:41 > 0:27:49Sweeping hard, starting to turn. The trouble with coming in here, Bingyu

0:27:49 > 0:27:52comes in, it might make it hard for us to get two.

0:28:00 > 0:28:14What do the girls do here?They have called a time-out straightaway.I

0:28:14 > 0:28:19think what they are worried about, trying to hit the top read, it's so

0:28:19 > 0:28:23straight if you put weight on it you get nothing. It could come in and

0:28:23 > 0:28:30jam.

0:28:30 > 0:28:40She is not going to call the bluff and try this run, is she?

0:28:40 > 0:28:43and try this run, is she?How are you getting two here?If we go

0:28:43 > 0:28:55there...Or she might guard? The only other option, you could free...

0:28:55 > 0:29:00The objective of the game is to get two.She is going to guard this

0:29:00 > 0:29:09site?I think what Glenn is saying if Eve puts a guard out, and wine

0:29:09 > 0:29:15puts another guard, it makes it more difficult. You have got nothing, no

0:29:15 > 0:29:20yellows out there.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25yellows out there. Get into the scoring position.

0:29:37 > 0:29:44No idea what's then but it's not the end of an end. Such an atmosphere

0:29:44 > 0:29:51swirling around the guys.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54swirling around the guys. What do you think? Or is that too much?

0:29:54 > 0:30:10That's lots. You want to guard the far side.Got to make up their mind.

0:30:10 > 0:30:19Did they decide on the guard in the end?I think they did.The clock is

0:30:19 > 0:30:27the thinking time clock. They start with 38 minutes each and we are in

0:30:27 > 0:30:33the 9th end obviously.They're OK for time. I think three and a half

0:30:33 > 0:30:38minutes is what they need. They have got five.Eve Muirhead not trying to

0:30:38 > 0:30:44come in here. She is wanting to protect this position to give her a

0:30:44 > 0:30:53chance with her last stone to score 2.

0:30:55 > 0:31:00She said I want to be level with the red at least.

0:31:04 > 0:31:13Here we go. A conversation from the Chinese point of view obviously.

0:31:13 > 0:31:21They have got a couple of options. They could try the draw and come in

0:31:21 > 0:31:26this side and say OK I'm cutting down the 4 foot area and you're

0:31:26 > 0:31:34going to have to play a nice shot to bite the 4 foot. Or she has the

0:31:34 > 0:31:40option of red on to red on to yellow. She could then open up the

0:31:40 > 0:31:45end if she doesn't get it correct and give us the opportunity for

0:31:45 > 0:31:51after 3 draw for a 2.She made her mind up pretty quickly. There wasn't

0:31:51 > 0:31:59too much discussion. They will use the fact that Great Britain have

0:31:59 > 0:32:03called a time-out also to regroup and look at what they were going to

0:32:03 > 0:32:05play.

0:32:07 > 0:32:17You tell me, I'm trying to work this one out.A bit close! Oh! Just

0:32:17 > 0:32:22missed that. That was a good effort. That was an ambitious shot from the

0:32:22 > 0:32:29Chinese skip, but it means Eve Muirhead has a draw and it's just

0:32:29 > 0:32:36cleared out that side. There is an opportunity to come in from that

0:32:36 > 0:32:43same side into the 4 foot, score 2 and Great Britain would lead. The

0:32:43 > 0:32:47worst that is going to happen is it will be tied going into the final

0:32:47 > 0:32:59end. Can Eve Muirhead make this 2? Clawing back this lead that China

0:32:59 > 0:33:08built. Eve Muirhead trying to continue with a good shot. Trying to

0:33:08 > 0:33:12continue the form she's found over the last three-ends.

0:33:14 > 0:33:19They like the line. It has the weight correct. It is going to start

0:33:19 > 0:33:20turning.

0:33:25 > 0:33:31Needs to turn, needs to keep coming. It looks pretty good. Another good

0:33:31 > 0:33:36shot from Eve Muirhead takes the 2 and now Great Britain lead. Only one

0:33:36 > 0:33:41shot in, but finally they pick up their 2. It is 7-6 to Great Britain.

0:33:41 > 0:33:47One end left. China with the hammer. But it has been so much better from

0:33:47 > 0:33:54Great Britain. It was looking dangerous there before Bingyu played

0:33:54 > 0:33:59her last stone. Unfortunately she didn't make the stone and we had a

0:33:59 > 0:34:05simple draw for 2, which Eve executed well. We have to be careful

0:34:05 > 0:34:12here, we are one up. But we don't have the hammer. Nice shot there.

0:34:12 > 0:34:21Under pressure. What she didn't do there, you said about you know make

0:34:21 > 0:34:23sure that if you give yourself the room to be slightly up in the right

0:34:23 > 0:34:27way. There was no way it was going to be tight to any of the stones

0:34:27 > 0:34:32coming in. It wasn't long. They didn't have to sweep too much to be

0:34:32 > 0:34:39fair. But just got the weight judged perfectly well. I will just quickly

0:34:39 > 0:34:45update the other scores. Korea are for the first time are down. Japan

0:34:45 > 0:34:51picked up 2 in the 9th. But Korea have the hammer in that match in the

0:34:51 > 0:35:02final end. The United States are two down, 6-4 Switzerland lead the

0:35:02 > 0:35:09United States. Sweden are 6-5 up against Canada. Canada have the

0:35:09 > 0:35:16hammer in that one. It is all very tense!A nice stone from Lauren

0:35:16 > 0:35:22Gray.The reason I mention it, this final end there are going to be

0:35:22 > 0:35:29cheers around this arena. You need to stay focussed on your match. As

0:35:29 > 0:35:34you get to the climax of all of these matches, they're all around

0:35:34 > 0:35:40about the same time and the Korean match, if the Koreans even come

0:35:40 > 0:35:51close to looking like winning, they will go crazy in here.

0:35:54 > 0:36:03A nice first stone from Lauren Gray. A corner guard in place for mrn.

0:36:03 > 0:36:08Lauren Gray will try and put a guard on that centre line. A familiar

0:36:08 > 0:36:12pattern.

0:36:17 > 0:36:22Vicki sweeping as hard as she can. Encouraging her to get closer to the

0:36:22 > 0:36:29centre.They did well that, that looked as though it had no chance of

0:36:29 > 0:36:38getting that far across. Still could have done with a little bit more.

0:36:38 > 0:36:39have done with a little bit more. So that British stone is sitting there,

0:36:39 > 0:36:47but they will ignore that. Going to try and come in behind their corner

0:36:47 > 0:36:56guard.China desperately trying to set up the opportunity for a 2 here.

0:36:56 > 0:37:06Needs to curl as well. It starts to as the weight comes off.I think Eve

0:37:06 > 0:37:10will still be able to see this.

0:37:14 > 0:37:20A nice call there from Vicki. She can't see much of the stone. So she

0:37:20 > 0:37:26has got to try and go for it. But the second option is if she catches

0:37:26 > 0:37:30the guard, she is also clearing that out.

0:37:33 > 0:37:37All of these girls, full-time curlers.

0:37:43 > 0:37:47Vicki played a couple of nice similar shots in the previous end.

0:37:47 > 0:37:54So she is a bit more comfortable with this shot. Couldn't see too

0:37:54 > 0:38:07much of that. So played well. How's your nerves?Shattered!I can't

0:38:07 > 0:38:10really, you know, this, every match is important, but to finish after

0:38:10 > 0:38:16three matches with two wins rather than two defeats, so important.

0:38:16 > 0:38:22Nudges that one over. She didn't quite connect in the right place to

0:38:22 > 0:38:29remove both of them.

0:38:29 > 0:38:35remove both of them. The girls playing a comfortable weight. Just a

0:38:35 > 0:38:40nice tap through weight. The sweeper should be able to hopefully hold the

0:38:40 > 0:38:47stone.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59It is starting to move isn't it?

0:38:59 > 0:39:07LAUGHTER. All action, Eve Muirhead, I may as well sweep the other one.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10You have got to match not just the shooter and the stone, it is what

0:39:10 > 0:39:16else is going on and try and move stones as far as you can. That one

0:39:16 > 0:39:21is sitting nicely. She can still see a little bit?She is going to try

0:39:21 > 0:39:29and drive the high yellow on to the ones in the house.

0:39:29 > 0:39:35Just might lose this a bit. Well, almost. Does well. Takes two out.

0:39:35 > 0:39:42The guard at the front and one out of the house.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45of the house. This is a nice call from Eve, she has decided to take

0:39:45 > 0:39:55that corner away. That might be the only opportunity for Bingyu. If they

0:39:55 > 0:40:00get one, then it is tied, you go into an extra end. Great Britain

0:40:00 > 0:40:07would have the hammer. So Eve won't mind the 1.

0:40:07 > 0:40:14Good shot. Anna Sloan. Every stone that just disappears off that

0:40:14 > 0:40:26graphic there with the situation remaining as it is, is good news.

0:40:26 > 0:40:27remaining as it is, is good news. I think even 7-7, extra end, from

0:40:27 > 0:40:31where they were, the way they were playing, I think that's a great

0:40:31 > 0:40:35achievement.Shows a lot of guts and determination and they have had to

0:40:35 > 0:40:38dig in hard here.

0:41:11 > 0:41:17A nice attempt for China to freeze that stone. But she has slightly sat

0:41:17 > 0:41:22on the edge of it. So an opportunity for Anna to spring all of these.Out

0:41:22 > 0:41:30the house. Away it goes.Done a good job there.Very good. Another one

0:41:30 > 0:41:37just disappears.

0:41:37 > 0:41:43just disappears. Smiems appearing in the British camp. Job not done yet.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45-- smiles.

0:41:50 > 0:41:57Tension at the curling - it's what we love slam

0:41:57 > 0:42:01Cheers are starting to ring out elsewhere, but here they need to

0:42:01 > 0:42:09move this.Again she is trying to freeze on to the GB stone. This

0:42:09 > 0:42:16one's going to come up short.I was watching Wang and she made a lovely

0:42:16 > 0:42:25hand action of sweep, sweep, sweep! She doesn't come and help!Only

0:42:25 > 0:42:31shouts words of encouragement. So Eve just going to peel off this

0:42:31 > 0:42:36shot, because at the end of the day, if she leaves that there, it does

0:42:36 > 0:42:40give China the opportunity to come round behind it. And it just needs

0:42:40 > 0:42:51one mistake. Two stones left for Eve Muirhead.Steely determination.

0:42:55 > 0:42:59She has been leading in the last few ends brilliantly well, making her

0:42:59 > 0:43:04shots. She looks good. She is quite happy to roll out of the house

0:43:04 > 0:43:09herself.

0:43:11 > 0:43:14herself. These girls will be preparing for Bingyu to take a 1 in

0:43:14 > 0:43:19this end and move into the extra end. But it has been a clean end and

0:43:19 > 0:43:27it's what they're looking for.The main thing they have managed to do

0:43:27 > 0:43:33since the half way point is just eliminate, there has still been one

0:43:33 > 0:43:37or two slightly loose shots, but eliminate mistakes and keep the

0:43:37 > 0:43:45pressure on. They have picked up their shots when they have needed to

0:43:45 > 0:43:53and Wang has had her opportunities limited. So they will try and play a

0:43:53 > 0:43:56similar shot to the one she did previous.

0:44:00 > 0:44:06Or better than her team mate did. This one looks like it has a lot of

0:44:06 > 0:44:11running in it. What she wanted to do was maybe come in behind it. But she

0:44:11 > 0:44:15has just played way too heavy. Britain can sweep that one past that

0:44:15 > 0:44:25T-line. Didn't even need to really. Well, this is a bait deja vu for

0:44:25 > 0:44:31China, they had a good position in their match with OAR this morning

0:44:31 > 0:44:36and let it slip away. What is Eve going to do? When you see Wang play

0:44:36 > 0:44:42you know, I am sure she wouldn't make two mistakes like that.You

0:44:42 > 0:44:47would think not. I think Eve's wanting to come in and, because

0:44:47 > 0:44:54there is a whole of the 4 open for Bingyu to draw to. You have got to

0:44:54 > 0:44:57play your shot to believe that your opposition is going to make their

0:44:57 > 0:45:03stone and what is the best shot that you can play? They're going to try

0:45:03 > 0:45:10and tap it a bit more into the 4 foot. And the throwing stone she is

0:45:10 > 0:45:15delivering will sit high with their yellow stone just a couple of feet

0:45:15 > 0:45:24behind it.

0:45:28 > 0:45:36As the question of Bingyu. Played this end really well.

0:45:43 > 0:45:52Yes, that's a good shot.It's close enough, just catching their side of

0:45:52 > 0:45:59the red circle. It's a draw here to level this up to take us into the

0:45:59 > 0:46:08extra end. Get this wrong, Great Britain will win. Now how is your

0:46:08 > 0:46:20nerves? Such a good player over the years. Bingyu. So much experience.

0:46:20 > 0:46:25She had three years out, had a child, came back to curling, said

0:46:25 > 0:46:30she was so excited to come back for the world Championships last year in

0:46:30 > 0:46:37Beijing. I didn't do so well. Had to make it through qualifying in

0:46:37 > 0:46:42December to make it to this Olympic Games and this morning, she didn't

0:46:42 > 0:46:46play a good shot at all with her last stone and she needs a very good

0:46:46 > 0:46:55one here to take the shot. She stayed down at the bottom end of the

0:46:55 > 0:47:01ice, I think she likes this, they still need to work this. Is it going

0:47:01 > 0:47:09to come up short? It might just about make it, China get one. Well

0:47:09 > 0:47:18swept. We are tied, 7-7, there will be an extra end, Great Britain will

0:47:18 > 0:47:23have the hammer, they have manufactured this situation really

0:47:23 > 0:47:29well, made their shots, they got level, got in front, China have come

0:47:29 > 0:47:33back and squared it, Great Britain will have the crucial advantage of

0:47:33 > 0:47:39the hammer in the extra end. Been keeping up-to-date with matches

0:47:39 > 0:47:44elsewhere and I can tell you Switzerland's have been victorious

0:47:44 > 0:47:54over the USA, 6-5. Sweden are at 6-5 up, I'm just trying to see what has

0:47:54 > 0:47:59happened, there may well be an extra end in the match against Canada, no

0:47:59 > 0:48:05one is shaking hands, they have tied their match, 6-6, Canada getting one

0:48:05 > 0:48:11in the final end, Sweden carrying the hammer into the final end. All

0:48:11 > 0:48:24quiet in the stands. Korea are one down, I can see Japan lying one at

0:48:24 > 0:48:32the moment. Here is the extra end. So important, wasn't it, Jackie, the

0:48:32 > 0:48:37two they picked up to move that one into the lead. Almost putting enough

0:48:37 > 0:48:45pressure on wine to snatch the victory. We have seen the Great

0:48:45 > 0:48:52Britain girls string a lot of shots together. A nice couple of ends

0:48:52 > 0:49:01completed. -- Wang.

0:49:01 > 0:49:07China just happy to throw short ones up the front. Great Britain cannot

0:49:07 > 0:49:16remove them from play until they have three guards. Lauren Gray being

0:49:16 > 0:49:24asked to try a tip shot. She just wants to catch an edge of a high

0:49:24 > 0:49:33stone. Just a little bit too much weight and it stayed heavy. If there

0:49:33 > 0:49:42is an omen, I think when we have the hammer, that's what Lauren did,

0:49:42 > 0:49:47wasn't that the end, Lauren went sailing through? I'm not saying it's

0:49:47 > 0:49:55a good thing to do, I'm saying, as an omen... OK. You are looking at me

0:49:55 > 0:50:02as though I am...

0:50:02 > 0:50:04as though I am... LAUGHTER if she connected with too much of the stone

0:50:04 > 0:50:10it would have to be replaced, it's a fine, delicate stone, you just want

0:50:10 > 0:50:17to catch an edge, open things up. Once again, I think we are going to

0:50:17 > 0:50:27see her trying the same shot.Age of the seat stuff, this. If you've been

0:50:27 > 0:50:33with us for all of the match, hang in there. This would be a great

0:50:33 > 0:50:40victory for Great Britain if they manage to pull it off.And she

0:50:40 > 0:50:49misses again. Unfortunately. That's a shame. You need the shot to spring

0:50:49 > 0:50:57them, calmly Smith played fantastically. As it stands at the

0:50:57 > 0:51:03moment, two red counters out there for China, guards that they want and

0:51:03 > 0:51:09we don't want to have.

0:51:10 > 0:51:12we don't want to have.Just explain what Jackie is saying, it makes the

0:51:12 > 0:51:20job so much more difficult, even though you have the last stone. The

0:51:20 > 0:51:26more difficult China can make that with the stones out front and

0:51:26 > 0:51:35bringing stones into the bottom. Crowded out. Just towing to make

0:51:35 > 0:51:40Eve's job more difficult. That is a little bit far. Even a short one

0:51:40 > 0:51:48would have been good. Another high guard, two guards can be removed, a

0:51:48 > 0:51:55great shot that Nicky Adams plays. Strong hitter. No messing around

0:51:55 > 0:52:03from Eve Muirhead. She wants Vicki Adams to send at least one here.

0:52:06 > 0:52:13She might get another shot at that. Bingyu going to try and replace

0:52:13 > 0:52:19another guard there.

0:52:32 > 0:52:38To be honest, they want them all in that centre line.I think she sensed

0:52:38 > 0:52:43straightaway she had thrown out a bit heavy, if I understood the hand

0:52:43 > 0:52:51signals.As it is, it stopped on the centre line, just off it and it's

0:52:51 > 0:52:58very difficult for Eve to get two of them here, they are looking to run

0:52:58 > 0:53:03the top red into the red in the house, they have to be careful they

0:53:03 > 0:53:09do not leave their own stone out there.I think even was saying take

0:53:09 > 0:53:14this one, I don't think she's even trying to run it back into the other

0:53:14 > 0:53:25one. Maybe for that reason you said. Yes, you don't want... Yes, that's a

0:53:25 > 0:53:31good call.

0:53:31 > 0:53:38Clearing things out in front. Still two Chinese stones there. Two more

0:53:38 > 0:53:49players left, Vicki Adams's last stone of the match.

0:53:49 > 0:53:57Assuming it is.

0:53:57 > 0:54:07This is a shot that Zhou, I think I said before, played some really good

0:54:07 > 0:54:11take-outs, not necessarily as good with the draw, see how she manages

0:54:11 > 0:54:22to place this, if she does. A good try.I think they have got that too

0:54:22 > 0:54:30far in, they really wanted a high guard there. Given us the

0:54:30 > 0:54:37opportunity to take two red away here. You might have heard the

0:54:37 > 0:54:49groans in the crowd. Well done. The reason? Although Korea had the last

0:54:49 > 0:54:57stone in their match in the extra end, it was actually in the tenth

0:54:57 > 0:55:02end, they weren't able to be successful. Japan have one that,

0:55:02 > 0:55:107-5. Two matches left here, China and Great Britain, then Canada

0:55:10 > 0:55:20Sweden. China trying to prevent Britain from winning this.

0:55:20 > 0:55:22Britain from winning this.Yes, the remaining two sheets of ice that

0:55:22 > 0:55:28have extra ends playing here, they are going to have to concentrate,

0:55:28 > 0:55:33the arena is empty now that Korea have finished.

0:55:37 > 0:55:44The centre line this time.Nice shot on the centre line but once again,

0:55:44 > 0:55:48close to being able to allow Great Britain to lift two of them which

0:55:48 > 0:55:54would be great for us.Just building and Eve Muirhead knows all the time

0:55:54 > 0:56:04it will come down to that last stone. Anna Sloan can help. Well

0:56:04 > 0:56:14played, Anna Sloan!Yes, a nice try, she even moved the red away.

0:56:14 > 0:56:24Time-out being called here by Bingyu.A major improvement on the

0:56:24 > 0:56:33situation. Really good shot from Anna Sloan. Pushing that out, the

0:56:33 > 0:56:41one stone staying in, of course, but compared to where we were at. Things

0:56:41 > 0:56:50looking pretty good. So the two skips left to play, two stones each,

0:56:50 > 0:56:55China going first, time-out cold, the coach is still on his way down,

0:56:55 > 0:57:01he gets 45 seconds to make his way down and then the conversation

0:57:01 > 0:57:08starts.

0:57:21 > 0:57:30You are right about keeping your focus, everybody is leaving, apart

0:57:30 > 0:57:34from the British supporters. Some Canadians left, their match still

0:57:34 > 0:57:43out there, some Swedish flags as well.

0:57:44 > 0:57:49What can you do? You must have been in this position many times? This is

0:57:49 > 0:57:56China's first stone and they have to try and put a centre WADA on. Put

0:57:56 > 0:58:05the centre on. Try for a mistake. -- put a centre guard on. She will try

0:58:05 > 0:58:14and come in. Do a very similar shot as Eve played in the last end.

0:58:14 > 0:58:22Cutting down the playing field that Eve will have to draw her shot too.

0:58:22 > 0:58:33We are going to see the centre guard.

0:58:34 > 0:58:38Indicated just high of the house.

0:58:50 > 0:58:58That's exactly where she wanted it played.Eve will just remove this.

0:58:58 > 0:59:06And then I think we will see Bingyu bring the shot down into the house,

0:59:06 > 0:59:10she will leave it, it's the only thing she can do, she might be a

0:59:10 > 0:59:14little bit close to the centre line but yes, she's asking the question

0:59:14 > 0:59:21of Eve. Do you want to try and hit these or draw?I think it was always

0:59:21 > 0:59:28coming down to that. Eve Muirhead with a draw to win the match. This,

0:59:28 > 0:59:32to give her a clear run as that or as clear as possible, get rid of

0:59:32 > 0:59:40this guard.

0:59:53 > 0:59:58She looks like she's indicating right on the centre, just high, I

0:59:58 > 1:00:06think I would play it to the right of the centre.Because? You are

1:00:06 > 1:00:13leaving the other one completely wide open and even could hit and

1:00:13 > 1:00:17flopped in and I think if you kind of show half of each...I see what

1:00:17 > 1:00:25you mean, the back red is wide open. Come up against bat and flop in? As

1:00:25 > 1:00:31long as she hits on the inside. OK.

1:00:32 > 1:00:41She is trying to reduce the playing field here, the 4 foot area.Explain

1:00:41 > 1:00:45why you wouldn't come just right on to the button. You don't want to

1:00:45 > 1:00:51come too far, you want to make it difficult, because Eve has to ignore

1:00:51 > 1:00:58both of the Chinese stones and play a cool straight forward draw. If you

1:00:58 > 1:01:03come too far you might give her an easy shot and she could tap you back

1:01:03 > 1:01:09and gets her shot. Key she stops high of the 4 foot. This has plenty

1:01:09 > 1:01:14on it as well. This is just going to run. That is what we were talking

1:01:14 > 1:01:24about. It has run too far. On

1:01:25 > 1:01:28about. It has run too far. On the nose hit here.

1:01:30 > 1:01:37Well, if you have been with us all the way through this match, there

1:01:37 > 1:01:41was something that told you it was always going to come down to Eve

1:01:41 > 1:01:45Muirhead and we knew in this final end this what is she has played for,

1:01:45 > 1:01:48it is what the team has been played for. It has been set up. They have

1:01:48 > 1:01:54done so well to get back into this match, initially to go back into the

1:01:54 > 1:02:01limit, limit China to low scoring. So Eve Muir head, this to win the

1:02:01 > 1:02:08match. She just needs to hit this Chinese red stone rigt on right on

1:02:08 > 1:02:15the nose. It is looking good at the moment. And it is. Eve Muirhead

1:02:15 > 1:02:19brings Great Britain home. It has been a tough match. It was one they

1:02:19 > 1:02:24really had to win after a defeat this morning and China played really

1:02:24 > 1:02:31well. There were a few errors early on from Britain, but Eve Muirhead in

1:02:31 > 1:02:36particular got better and better. We can all breathe a huge sigh of

1:02:36 > 1:02:43relief. Great Britain win and move to a two in one record. But it was

1:02:43 > 1:02:50very close. They came out by one shot, 8-7.

1:03:02 > 1:03:14STUDIO: 8-7 the final shower. China did lead 5-3.

1:03:14 > 1:03:17did lead 5-3. Jackie, Great Britain up into second place. They would

1:03:17 > 1:03:21have been all the way down there if they had lost. How big a moment do

1:03:21 > 1:03:26you think it is in the battle for who they might face in medal

1:03:26 > 1:03:31matches?That was a real difficult game for the girls. They showed, you

1:03:31 > 1:03:36know what? They showed real resilience and determination to pick

1:03:36 > 1:03:42up their 2 in the 7th and to do the same again in the 9th. They were a

1:03:42 > 1:03:45much more confident team in the second half. They had to take it to

1:03:45 > 1:03:52the extra end. But they played out the ends as they wanted to.I always

1:03:52 > 1:03:56think the adrenaline that must be coursing through you when you have

1:03:56 > 1:04:02that final stone, knowing she has has to deliver it. But still don't,

1:04:02 > 1:04:11does your hand not start to sweat? LAUGHTER. People ask skips that all

1:04:11 > 1:04:15the time. You're so focussed on the game in hand, you don't have time to

1:04:15 > 1:04:21think about the negotiationtivelity of it -- negativity of it I. You are

1:04:21 > 1:04:25playing about the shot you're going to play. I think Eve was confident

1:04:25 > 1:04:31about the ice, it is pretty straight and she delivered it very well.Well

1:04:31 > 1:04:35backed up by Anna Sloan, who played particularly well to set things up

1:04:35 > 1:04:41for Eve, so she could finish up. Yeah, the whole team played and

1:04:41 > 1:04:46performed very well in the latter half of the game and they scraped

1:04:46 > 1:04:51through the first half, but it is never over until you get to the

1:04:51 > 1:04:5710th, 11th end. That will stand them in good stead moving into the rest

1:04:57 > 1:05:01of the competition. On paper we should these should be easier wins

1:05:01 > 1:05:04for the girls and they haven't been. But they have got the wins under

1:05:04 > 1:05:13their belts and they have to keep stepping it up every game.I'm sure

1:05:13 > 1:05:18we will be hearing from the team when Steve Cram has a chance to

1:05:18 > 1:05:26catch up with them. But three hours of intense action and in the end

1:05:26 > 1:05:30Great Britain winning 8-7. Thank you to Jackie and Steve and they get a

1:05:30 > 1:05:39bit of a break. So let ease just give you an idea of what still to

1:05:39 > 1:05:47come.

1:06:11 > 1:06:26I will be back at 7 o'clock on BBC Two with a round up of the action.

1:06:29 > 1:06:34Later tonight Radzi takes over just after midnight. The medals will the

1:06:34 > 1:06:40decided in the men's skeleton from 12.30. Can Dom Parsons move up from

1:06:40 > 1:06:44fourth into the medal positions? We will find out at about 2 o'clock in

1:06:44 > 1:06:47the morning.

1:07:00 > 1:07:09We will be back 11.20 for the first runs of women's skeleton with Lizzie

1:07:09 > 1:07:14Yarnold and Laura Deas. Can they transfer that training form into the

1:07:14 > 1:07:20actual runs? It will be fascinating to see. Now some women's ice hockey

1:07:20 > 1:07:24and in what could be a dress rehearsal for the final, the United

1:07:24 > 1:07:31States were taking on Canada. Here is what has happened.

1:07:39 > 1:07:50Canada want to get set up in the zone. They're wearing red.

1:07:58 > 1:08:05Augusta still. Back to that blue line. Could be a chance. What an

1:08:05 > 1:08:12opportunity. It's there! Canada score!This is all Augusta. She

1:08:12 > 1:08:23starts this play. What a pass from Spooner. She fires that puck. Rooney

1:08:23 > 1:08:32gets a bit of it, but not enough.

1:08:36 > 1:08:49What a goal. How did that find its way through?Nurse was looking for

1:08:49 > 1:08:53options, looked like she was going to pass and at the last second she

1:08:53 > 1:08:58shoots. Perfectly placed right over the shoulder, top corner from Sarah

1:08:58 > 1:09:05Nurse. What a huge goal from this fourth line.Top spot in group 1 at

1:09:05 > 1:09:13stake for the winner. And a slightly easier route through to the gold

1:09:13 > 1:09:20medal game. And Coyne scores!

1:09:25 > 1:09:29Coyne, the American speedsters scores, 23 seconds in, the come back

1:09:29 > 1:09:38starts here. She comes through the neutral zone. Gets a pass from

1:09:38 > 1:09:48Dekker and then in stride fires this past the keeper. What an enormous

1:09:48 > 1:09:53goal. The Americans were looking for a spark, but they got a bonfire from

1:09:53 > 1:10:07Coyne.Coyne will link it to Dekker. This is powerful spoon. Spooner off

1:10:07 > 1:10:12the skates and in. This will go to review.Let's watch it. I hope the

1:10:12 > 1:10:17referee's in the screen. The referee makes no motion whether this should

1:10:17 > 1:10:23be a called a goal or not. It's got to be a kicking motion. 21 going,

1:10:23 > 1:10:31she is stopping. Ooh, that could be. It her left foot that it goes in.

1:10:31 > 1:10:39Great job from Spooner. Irwin going to the net. She is trying to stop,

1:10:39 > 1:10:44but it is always tricky, when you're trying to stop, you're moving your

1:10:44 > 1:10:50feet.The call has changed. It's a kick. No goal. The call on the ice

1:10:50 > 1:10:55was goal. Video replay says no goal. Interesting the players found out

1:10:55 > 1:11:00the same time as the fans. And everybody else in the arena. Can the

1:11:00 > 1:11:08United States carve out one more chance? Canada killing this off on

1:11:08 > 1:11:13the boards. Final five seconds. They need a quick shot. The last chance

1:11:13 > 1:11:17of game. It goes all the way through. Where is it? The buzzer

1:11:17 > 1:11:24goes, the puck's on the line and we will get some pushing and shoving.

1:11:24 > 1:11:31Turnbull is in there. Oh, boy, this rivalry is spilling over. When she

1:11:31 > 1:11:35goes down on her back it is zero. There is no chance it was a goal.

1:11:35 > 1:11:42You can see the puck and then it all kicked off from there!Review the

1:11:42 > 1:11:49call on the ice stands - no goal. No goal. The result stands.

1:11:49 > 1:11:52call on the ice stands - no goal. No goal. The result stands.

1:11:52 > 1:12:00STUDIO: I wasn't expecting that sort of fisticuffs! If they get to that

1:12:00 > 1:12:06gold medal match again, clearly worth watching.

1:12:06 > 1:12:12worth watching. Finland beat OAR5-1 and the Finner men beat Germany. Now

1:12:12 > 1:12:18we will show you in the men's Norway against Sweden.

1:12:36 > 1:12:51Big shot comes in and the first goal of the game.

1:12:51 > 1:12:55of the game. Sweden take the lead through Lindholm. Sweden have been

1:12:55 > 1:13:00dominant and they're going to look and score another and they get it.

1:13:00 > 1:13:10Just in time.

1:13:11 > 1:13:22Lander and Sweden have their second.

1:13:25 > 1:13:41This is a chance and a goal. Great finish. Arriving late on the the

1:13:41 > 1:13:50scene and Omark wove some magic. We mentioned Omark and that was an

1:13:50 > 1:13:55incredibly good play. Now he has possession again. Trying to feed it

1:13:55 > 1:13:59to the man in the points. Another assist for Omark and another goal

1:13:59 > 1:14:05for Sweden as this game will be put to bed. Beautiful, beautiful work.

1:14:05 > 1:14:14Down low in the zone. The keeper beaten again.

1:14:14 > 1:14:17Down low in the zone. The keeper beaten again. There is good ice

1:14:17 > 1:14:20hockey going on all over. But the ticket everyone wanted was to sea

1:14:20 > 1:14:25South Korea. They have been playing the Czech Republic. We will be

1:14:25 > 1:14:28joining it live, but here are the goals so far.

1:14:39 > 1:14:47Snapshot and South Korea have scored. Ho, Korea in their first

1:14:47 > 1:14:57ever Winter Olympics score the goal. And open the scoring in this game.

1:14:57 > 1:15:02Lovely work and a shop shot and Ho writes his name in the history

1:15:02 > 1:15:16books. Korea lead 1-0. A power play for the Czech Republic. How are they

1:15:16 > 1:15:23going to move the puck around?

1:15:25 > 1:15:32Five skaters against four. The way in which they spread around, try and

1:15:32 > 1:15:41take that advantage. First shot and a goal. That was on stuff! The way

1:15:41 > 1:15:52they worked it around. And some Czech Republic flags flying around,

1:15:52 > 1:15:59that is why you cannot afford to take penalties against this team.

1:15:59 > 1:16:08This will be sent down the ice. This could be a chance. Another snapshot.

1:16:08 > 1:16:16Could not keep it out. Headed in. All the way through the Met. Too

1:16:16 > 1:16:26little too late. Goal from the Czech Republic, they come from a goal

1:16:26 > 1:16:35down. STUDIO: the Czech Republic leading 2-1, we join it in the third

1:16:35 > 1:16:39here at live. We join the commentators. COMMENTATOR: thank

1:16:39 > 1:16:46you. This has been a cracker of a game. The Czech Republic hanging in

1:16:46 > 1:16:51there, riding a bit of a storm and they have done it very, very well.

1:16:51 > 1:16:56Trying to find a way to get an equaliser in the final six minutes.

1:16:56 > 1:17:06Fantastic, the fans out in force making plenty of noise. Cleared. The

1:17:06 > 1:17:15Czech Republic do a great job of recovering. The red shirts of this

1:17:15 > 1:17:21check side have been swarming.

1:17:21 > 1:17:24check side have been swarming. Time is the shout, plenty of time to get

1:17:24 > 1:17:33that clear. Out of play. 2-1, Paul Thompson former Great Britain coach

1:17:33 > 1:17:38alongside me. When you look at this game, how much longer do Korea leave

1:17:38 > 1:17:46it until...They will shorten the bench, Seth. The top three offensive

1:17:46 > 1:17:52lines, just over five minutes to go. They have bent and bent and not

1:17:52 > 1:17:58broken. Still a one goal hockey game and with this crowd behind them...

1:17:58 > 1:18:06Huge giveaway and a great save, has it gone through? It was close.

1:18:06 > 1:18:10Dalton has been magnificent. Made save after save and that is another

1:18:10 > 1:18:16one.Giveaway on the blue line, semi-rake away, holding his

1:18:16 > 1:18:23position. Hoping this one has not gone through. The defence coming

1:18:23 > 1:18:33behind to support.Shuts his ankles at the bike time.He shuts the door.

1:18:33 > 1:18:40I can only imagine what will happen if the Koreans score a second goal.

1:18:40 > 1:18:46This is a purely South Korean team, no mixture like in the women's game,

1:18:46 > 1:18:52that is why they are wearing different jerseys. They have not got

1:18:52 > 1:18:59the landmass of the Korean peninsula. The North Korean cheer

1:18:59 > 1:19:05squad still in attendance making plenty of noise behind the goal. The

1:19:05 > 1:19:10Czech Republic heading back again. The group phase for these teams. The

1:19:10 > 1:19:17Czech Republic won this back in Nagano in 19 98. Bronze medallists

1:19:17 > 1:19:30in Turin. Swift pulling it back. A hard pass. Not able to be taken.

1:19:30 > 1:19:35Quite happy to get that away. They know they are taking time off the

1:19:35 > 1:19:44clock.You want to activate the defence man.

1:19:44 > 1:19:54defence man. It is a shame that Smid did not get a chance. A diving

1:19:54 > 1:20:03attempt. Good play by Regan. So smooth.

1:20:03 > 1:20:09smooth. The alternate captain of the team steps forward.Going down low.

1:20:09 > 1:20:18What can they create? Trying to stuff it short side. Plant. Stiffly

1:20:18 > 1:20:26gets it out, big shot goes over the top. Down the ice it goes. The

1:20:26 > 1:20:34whistle will blow. The Koreans will be almost 200 feet away from where

1:20:34 > 1:20:40they want to be.The Korean coaching staff will think about their line

1:20:40 > 1:20:46matches, if they have to pull the goal, the set play to get this game

1:20:46 > 1:20:51tied up. Normally under two minutes, they will be looking for puck

1:20:51 > 1:20:57possession time. Get a six on five opportunity, just like Slovenia did

1:20:57 > 1:21:03yesterday against the USA but you have to get the puck. Some tight

1:21:03 > 1:21:11games already. Doesn't quite work out. Back to the blue line. Again,

1:21:11 > 1:21:19out at the age of his crease. Dalton has had a terrific, terrific game,

1:21:19 > 1:21:24he has been brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Been one of the

1:21:24 > 1:21:30players whose been bought in from Clinton, Ontario in Canada and he

1:21:30 > 1:21:35has played in the American hockey league, has had some time with a

1:21:35 > 1:21:40Boston team but has been first class, this is his third

1:21:40 > 1:21:44international tournament with the Korean side, he knows exactly what

1:21:44 > 1:21:50this means and when Jimmy was building his team, he was excited to

1:21:50 > 1:21:57be part of it. Nice skating. The Czech Republic will want to keep the

1:21:57 > 1:22:03puck.Keep it down low. They know they can run down the clock, not

1:22:03 > 1:22:13looking to throw pucks into areas for Korea can counter.Big block.

1:22:13 > 1:22:18You got to pay the price. If you want to win the game, you do.

1:22:18 > 1:22:31Offside. That is given. There is Jimmy. Two-time Stanley cup winner,

1:22:31 > 1:22:34former Nottingham pampered, great stint in the UK, to go for it this

1:22:34 > 1:22:39programme some years ago. -- Notting Hamp and third.

1:22:44 > 1:22:49Done a great job. Really. He and Richard. I coached against them, ten

1:22:49 > 1:22:55years ago. To see where their programme has gone over that time,

1:22:55 > 1:23:01great investment, the Asian league holding up as it is. These guys

1:23:01 > 1:23:05being exposed and playing at a higher level, great experience for

1:23:05 > 1:23:09coaching staff and players, giving themselves a chance against one of

1:23:09 > 1:23:16the world's elite teams in the Czech Republic. What they do with junior

1:23:16 > 1:23:21hockey, they are developing at all levels, developing the women's team,

1:23:21 > 1:23:25this is an holistic change for ice hockey in Korea. It has two start

1:23:25 > 1:23:30from the bottom up, Seth, we know that. You can get a quick fix from

1:23:30 > 1:23:36the top down. An offensive face-off, just sorting themselves out, the

1:23:36 > 1:23:42Czech Republic. Here it is. Back to the blue line, straight into the

1:23:42 > 1:23:48body, quick shot, not particularly good. You mention it has to come

1:23:48 > 1:23:53from the bottom, if you are watching this and you are inspired, why not

1:23:53 > 1:24:00head to the Get Inspired section of the BBC website, details on how to

1:24:00 > 1:24:08find your local clubs. Anyone from 15, 16 can start getting involved,

1:24:08 > 1:24:12there are adult leagues you can play in. Plenty of ice hockey going on

1:24:12 > 1:24:20around the UK. Korea want something special.

1:24:21 > 1:24:26special. Grabbing the headlines. By making history, scoring the first

1:24:26 > 1:24:33ever goal for a Korean men's team. At an Olympic ice hockey tournament.

1:24:33 > 1:24:36Wouldn't it be something if they could come back from here and get a

1:24:36 > 1:24:44second?Helped out of the zone. Playing with quite a lot of

1:24:44 > 1:24:50intelligence, this team from the Czech Republic, leaping into spaces.

1:24:50 > 1:24:56Can they start reading this towards the net? Good defensively. Here it

1:24:56 > 1:25:03comes again, to the top. Does not get it through. He wants a second

1:25:03 > 1:25:09look at this. This time it will go through. Can they get another shot

1:25:09 > 1:25:14in on goal, they cannot, cleared all the way down and still Dalton

1:25:14 > 1:25:20remains steadfast.Yes, I'm a little confused by that, good puck

1:25:20 > 1:25:29possession time, no pressure on. Hopefully get the six on five goals

1:25:29 > 1:25:35that will take you into overtime. Going to have a second look at this,

1:25:35 > 1:25:41skating in circles. The Czech Republic team doing a good job in

1:25:41 > 1:25:49the neutral zone. Great play! Another go, that is dropped, very

1:25:49 > 1:25:56nearly beat Frank. Little trick to get high his man in neutral ice and

1:25:56 > 1:26:05then, boom.I daresay we will see a time-out. Looked to run set play, he

1:26:05 > 1:26:11has been their best player, scored a fantastic all, has been in the

1:26:11 > 1:26:22middle of everything.Absolutely. Ho, great little player. The noise

1:26:22 > 1:26:29level will build once again. Will it crescendo with a goal?Frank has

1:26:29 > 1:26:34been good. He hasn't had a lot to do, a lot of it has been from the

1:26:34 > 1:26:40outside, he is comfortable. We have been saying to him, get the Middle

1:26:40 > 1:26:45driver, Richard is talking now, they will have a set play already set up,

1:26:45 > 1:26:50who he wants in what position, if you lose the puck, where you go to

1:26:50 > 1:26:57retrieve it. We slot -- sought the Slovenians do it yesterday. You

1:26:57 > 1:27:06never know.If you were drawing it up, which of the Koreans would you

1:27:06 > 1:27:15see shooting the puck? You can see now on the point is the goalscorer,

1:27:15 > 1:27:20loading up three on the inside by the looks of it. Get a little drop,

1:27:20 > 1:27:24back to the point, have a little play, this face-off is key.

1:27:28 > 1:27:33Pretty much the front for with the way they have played. They should be

1:27:33 > 1:27:43pinched in. Still time. The net remains empty. The Koreans step

1:27:43 > 1:27:54forward. Ho, round the back of the net it goes.

1:27:56 > 1:28:03net it goes. Kovar rushed, two big bodies. Three, four, five players.

1:28:03 > 1:28:11If they do not win the puck it will be over very, very quickly. Swift,

1:28:11 > 1:28:15great defensive work. Got to get going, right up the middle of the

1:28:15 > 1:28:20ice but what can he make happen? Entering a sea of red, putting

1:28:20 > 1:28:27brakes entering the net, maybe one last shot? Bigshot, it goes wide.

1:28:27 > 1:28:38What a start! For these teams. So close. So, so close.

1:28:39 > 1:28:41close. So, so close. That man made history scoring his goals but the

1:28:41 > 1:28:45Czech Republic team will take the accolades and the points as well,

1:28:45 > 1:28:50they had to come from behind to do this but they've played ever so

1:28:50 > 1:28:53well, a team that is very well drilled and they came through a big

1:28:53 > 1:29:00scare at the end.Great game. If that comes off the other side of

1:29:00 > 1:29:06your shin pad and it ricochets... Full credit to South Korea, they

1:29:06 > 1:29:13have come in and never gone away. The Czech style is a little bit more

1:29:13 > 1:29:15experienced, they kept them to the outside defensively but they never

1:29:15 > 1:29:25went away. A great game, fantastic atmosphere.Search a great game.

1:29:25 > 1:29:29Victory of the Czech Republic, disappointment for the Korean fans

1:29:29 > 1:29:33but the fans in the stadium will have enjoy every moment of this. The

1:29:33 > 1:29:43final score Czech Republic beat Korea by 2-1. STUDIO: great stuff,

1:29:43 > 1:29:4711:30pm in South Korea, that is the last live sport other night but it

1:29:47 > 1:29:51starts again in not too many hours and from midnight tonight you can

1:29:51 > 1:29:56watch all sorts of things on the BBC, including a full wrap of the

1:29:56 > 1:29:59day at 7pm on BBC2 and for those who don't stay up through the night,

1:29:59 > 1:30:06quite a lot, this afternoon with Hazel Irvine to wrap up. Some

1:30:06 > 1:30:09breaking news from Pyeongchang, the British International Olympic

1:30:09 > 1:30:13Committee Adam Pengelly has been sent home from the Winter Olympics

1:30:13 > 1:30:17following an altercation with a security guard. The IOC has

1:30:17 > 1:30:21announced his departure, a spokesperson says the IOC wishes to

1:30:21 > 1:30:24apologise for the behaviour of one of its members and feels extremely

1:30:24 > 1:30:28sorry for the incident caused following an interview with the RUC

1:30:28 > 1:30:31ethics...

1:30:45 > 1:30:53Adam was one of three British members of the IOC, a former

1:30:53 > 1:30:57skeleton athletes. He has explained what happened. So this morning he

1:30:57 > 1:31:02was leaving his hotel. He says, I tried to walk past the security

1:31:02 > 1:31:08guard when he told me to go the other way. Hi came close to me and

1:31:08 > 1:31:11asked to see my accreditation. I asked to see his manager. He

1:31:11 > 1:31:16wouldn't take me to his manager and asked to see a photograph of my

1:31:16 > 1:31:22accreditation. It went on for 30 seconds and I ran past him. I didn't

1:31:22 > 1:31:28stop. I have since heard he fell over. But I didn't hear him fall or

1:31:28 > 1:31:33shout out. At no point did I touch him. Although I have been told that

1:31:33 > 1:31:36footage makes look as if I pushed him, this was not the case and if

1:31:36 > 1:31:41anything he was coming towards me. It was my mistake and I'm sorry, I

1:31:41 > 1:31:46should have turned around and I also apologise for swearing. I'm sorry to

1:31:46 > 1:31:52the security guard and I spoke about IOC members being held to a higher

1:31:52 > 1:31:58standard and I have let myself down. Some say there was a fight or

1:31:58 > 1:32:06scuffle. This is incorrect. So Mr Pengilly has been sent home from the

1:32:06 > 1:32:12winter Olympics and there was skeleton action this morning. There

1:32:12 > 1:32:20has been the team luge. This is a competition in which the countries

1:32:20 > 1:32:25that have a depth of luge talent have an advantage, because it

1:32:25 > 1:32:34comprises one female, one male luger. As they come down, they have

1:32:34 > 1:32:39to hit the barrier at the top. It is a knock out. They have to hit the

1:32:39 > 1:32:46pad a as they finish so the next one can start. It is interesting. After

1:32:46 > 1:32:50this, Hazel will take over. Here is what happened in the main

1:32:50 > 1:32:54contenders, starting with the United States in Team luge.

1:33:01 > 1:33:04COMMENTATOR: COMMENTATOR: This could be good if she nails it. If she

1:33:04 > 1:33:08slides like she has been doing. He has looked a bit sort of she is

1:33:08 > 1:33:18going to get down quick or crash. Hopefully she will nail it to give

1:33:18 > 1:33:22the Americans a chance of getting another medal at this Olympics. She

1:33:22 > 1:33:28is in this team ahead of bronze medallist from Sochi, Erin Hamlin.

1:33:28 > 1:33:34This is where she was having problems, on the corner. She is

1:33:34 > 1:33:39still nervous on that. That is why she was having issues. But putting

1:33:39 > 1:33:44her feet down it will slow her down. But will it keep her in contention

1:33:44 > 1:33:49for the next rider. To pull them back into it. She is going to lose a

1:33:49 > 1:33:59bit of time coming up the hill.I'm afraid it has not been a good run.

1:33:59 > 1:34:06Britcher, maybe they will rue not putting Hamlin in.

1:34:16 > 1:34:21Mazda has had an excellent week. This is different, because they're

1:34:21 > 1:34:25coming from a different part of the track. So it is slightly lower. It

1:34:25 > 1:34:32is just the way they slide the track. He has made good adjustments,

1:34:32 > 1:34:37but he is now starting to lose time. Have the teams got what it takes to

1:34:37 > 1:34:41pull them back in the front? This is not the run they need to pull them

1:34:41 > 1:34:50towards the medals.They're two hundredths of a second off. Huge

1:34:50 > 1:34:58pressure on Matthew

1:34:58 > 1:35:01pressure on Matthew Mortensen and Terdiman. They have a big job on to

1:35:01 > 1:35:07get themselves back ahead of Italy. They're up against it I think, John?

1:35:07 > 1:35:15Yes, that mistake there, I don't know whether that will be enough.

1:35:15 > 1:35:21The sleds are a bit heavier. Are they gaining? They are gaining. But

1:35:21 > 1:35:24is there enough track to come up the hill and get up there? It is very

1:35:24 > 1:35:34tight. You can lose a lot of speed up the hill. They have done it by

1:35:34 > 1:35:43two thousandths of a second! At the start of week we explain ed this was

1:35:43 > 1:35:48the only event that is timed down to the thousand. We needed that

1:35:48 > 1:35:51facility to separate the United States from Italy. The United States

1:35:51 > 1:35:59guaranteed fourth. And I bet Summer Britcher is the most relieved person

1:35:59 > 1:36:04in this Sliding Centre.I think she will be. Because that run she had

1:36:04 > 1:36:07was probably better than the two runs she made mistakes on in the

1:36:07 > 1:36:12women's race. But it was still not necessarily good enough. I don't

1:36:12 > 1:36:17know if this team have put in a good enough performance to beat the next

1:36:17 > 1:36:22three teams coming up. They're looking at the Canadians and

1:36:22 > 1:36:27Austrians. But it would take a lot for the Canadians, who have a strong

1:36:27 > 1:36:31team, to make a mistake and come down. You see Chris having to reach

1:36:31 > 1:36:41across and getting that wrong. The doubles teams did well.Summer

1:36:41 > 1:36:46Britcher was fourth quickest only from the first run. Mazda and the

1:36:46 > 1:36:51doubles boys have brought it back for America. They lead ahead of

1:36:51 > 1:36:59Italy and Latvia and this is getting spicy as the Canadians go. Three

1:36:59 > 1:37:12more teams to go. A strong team for Canada. Edney and Wau kir lker and

1:37:12 > 1:37:17Smith to come. Alex Gough is first off.She had a slide into the second

1:37:17 > 1:37:22bend. I don't know if she wasn't quite settled. The quality of her

1:37:22 > 1:37:26over Britcher we have seen. She didn't make any mistakes in her

1:37:26 > 1:37:34race. If she nails this part. That line looks flat. You can almost hear

1:37:34 > 1:37:40it accelerating. There is no sound. And this is good. But she is still

1:37:40 > 1:37:46in the red. She has now started to accelerate. She will put time over

1:37:46 > 1:37:50Britcher, because she made mistakes. Canada, their noses in front after

1:37:50 > 1:37:59the first leg. By 16 hundredths of a second. The very last run on the

1:37:59 > 1:38:03world stage for Sam Edney, who was sixth in the men's individual event.

1:38:03 > 1:38:06She is charged with the responsibilities of trying to grow

1:38:06 > 1:38:11is in Canadian lead over the United States and hand them a guaranteed

1:38:11 > 1:38:17medal. If they can beat the United States they can win a medal. This is

1:38:17 > 1:38:23crunch time for these teams. Now the times are in a way, Mazda's drive

1:38:23 > 1:38:26wasn't that bad. He is starting to pull away. You can see the

1:38:26 > 1:38:30difference between him being a silver medallist and him finishing

1:38:30 > 1:38:40sixth. This will come down to the doubles pairing. Can Edney keep the

1:38:40 > 1:38:48lead for Canada? Just by millimetres. As you say, it is now

1:38:48 > 1:38:52Walker and Smith. There is no doubt that they were better than the

1:38:52 > 1:38:57Americans in the doubles event. They finished fifth. The Americans have

1:38:57 > 1:39:03finished 10th. They need a mistake to allow the Americans in. I reckon

1:39:03 > 1:39:07if they're clean and fast Canada will get a medal.Yes this was

1:39:07 > 1:39:14almost a dead heat. You can see how much they pull out. Unless they make

1:39:14 > 1:39:20a mistake, this is Canada heading for another medal. They're going to

1:39:20 > 1:39:28get the bronze medal at least. They're very high into the 16th and

1:39:28 > 1:39:32final bend A late mistake. It doesn't matter. Canada are

1:39:32 > 1:39:38medallists again. Canada have a bronze medal and it looks with

1:39:38 > 1:39:44Austria and Germany to come that... That the Americans might miss out!

1:39:44 > 1:39:47Although they're still alive. Canada know they have a medal. Guaranteed

1:39:47 > 1:39:59bronze. Look at the joy - unconfined!I wonder if Alex Gough

1:39:59 > 1:40:02at the start thought she would be a double sort of bronze medallist. We

1:40:02 > 1:40:10say that yes, but at least a double medallist. The team in Sochi as well

1:40:10 > 1:40:14were fourth. So these two fourths have now been converted into two

1:40:14 > 1:40:21thirds. It is a sweet feeling for them.It is. This is the sort of

1:40:21 > 1:40:25result that drives these nations forward, and they get more funding

1:40:25 > 1:40:29and get better equipment and they can move from being successful to

1:40:29 > 1:40:37trying to be dominant like the Germans.Wonderful. And Sam Edney

1:40:37 > 1:40:41ends his international career at last an Olympic medallist. Great for

1:40:41 > 1:40:54him.He will be overjoyed.Big pressure now on this young lady.

1:40:54 > 1:40:58Madeleine Egle, who wasn't one of the star names from the ladies'

1:40:58 > 1:41:06event. She finished ninth. The next two won gold and silver in their

1:41:06 > 1:41:11events.

1:41:13 > 1:41:18events.If this is, although she finished ninth, if this is the weak

1:41:18 > 1:41:22link of the team that is going to let the Americans in, this is where

1:41:22 > 1:41:27it will be lost for the Austrians. Will she come down in fronts of the

1:41:27 > 1:41:32Canadian?

1:41:33 > 1:41:39Canadian? I don't think so. She will lose time? This is a good thing for

1:41:39 > 1:41:43the Austrians, she will be so close to Gough, because she wasn't this

1:41:43 > 1:41:46close in the women's competition.I think she needed to be two tenths at

1:41:46 > 1:41:54least in hand of the Americans. She is two hundredths, I think she has

1:41:54 > 1:41:59given Austria a great chance. A question I think whether it will be

1:41:59 > 1:42:04silver or bronze. Of course, that all assumes that the Germans will go

1:42:04 > 1:42:09well themselves. It does. You have still got to get even across the

1:42:09 > 1:42:13line in one piece and not make a mistake. Some of the men have made

1:42:13 > 1:42:17mistakes. But that was from higher up the track. This is surprising

1:42:17 > 1:42:24that he is losing time, compared. For the previous team, the Canadian,

1:42:24 > 1:42:31Sam had a good run, although he is trying to pull it back. It will be

1:42:31 > 1:42:42down to the doubles run. This is the Olympic champion.

1:42:43 > 1:42:47Olympic champion. Silver medallist, 33-year-old Penz and Fischler have

1:42:47 > 1:42:55got to hold if they can superiority over Canada. It is just momentarily

1:42:55 > 1:42:59swung back Canada's way. They had a slide off corner one at the end. So

1:42:59 > 1:43:05now this is the fast part of the track and we start to build speed.

1:43:05 > 1:43:09That could be the mistake. Just there. That cost them a medal. Or

1:43:09 > 1:43:13can they hold on? They still have 14 hundredths in the bag. Another

1:43:13 > 1:43:20mistake. The Americans are only 14 or 15 hundredths behinds. Can they

1:43:20 > 1:43:25hold on?Are Canada about to improve their position here as well? They

1:43:25 > 1:43:33are. A silver medal for Canada. Austria guaranteed bronze. Still

1:43:33 > 1:43:41verse for Canada at least. Bronze for Austria at least. The Americans,

1:43:41 > 1:43:46assuming the Germans don't make a real hash of things, the Americans

1:43:46 > 1:43:54are going to finish out of it.The Americans have missed out by a tenth

1:43:54 > 1:43:58of a second. That is really close. But these are the small differences

1:43:58 > 1:44:04between the teams. All of them you know they just did enough. I thought

1:44:04 > 1:44:08the doubles pairing would have done better. And confirmed them with the

1:44:08 > 1:44:17silver. But she did very well.Egle, she is only 19. She has got an

1:44:17 > 1:44:22Olympic medal.

1:44:22 > 1:44:26Olympic medal. When you look at the difference between these top

1:44:26 > 1:44:31sliders, there is nothing in it. Specially over one run. They have

1:44:31 > 1:44:36had to learn the track from one side. This cost them, that little

1:44:36 > 1:44:43skid. But at least they have come home with a bronze. Well, we are

1:44:43 > 1:44:46thinking that the Germans are just going to glide into this without a

1:44:46 > 1:44:56mistake. The Germans to come. Canada lead.Great celebrations in Canada

1:44:56 > 1:45:01House I'm sure tonight. What a strong team this is. Two gold

1:45:01 > 1:45:10medallists and a bronze medallist to go for Germany.

1:45:10 > 1:45:15go for Germany. Geisenberger if she gets a medal would create a record,

1:45:15 > 1:45:22chasing her fourth gold at Olympic Games.

1:45:24 > 1:45:31All class in the women's event. She won by a long, long way and she is

1:45:31 > 1:45:39the last you expect to make a mistake. She is a class act. The

1:45:39 > 1:45:43German ice queen as she is known. Look at these lines, everything she

1:45:43 > 1:45:51does looks effortless. That is why she is what she is. She is going to

1:45:51 > 1:45:57give their team a chance, the way she sets this up, she will have

1:45:57 > 1:46:08three tenths lead.Copybook stuff, handing

1:46:11 > 1:46:21handing over to Ludwig.

1:46:25 > 1:46:30Felix Loch, his last run a disaster. Giving the doubles team a great shot

1:46:30 > 1:46:38at gold. Not really making any difference. Look at the difference

1:46:38 > 1:46:44in the time. Not really making any inroads. Giving the pairs team at

1:46:44 > 1:46:52least two tenths in the back. They are the quality act.The two tenths

1:46:52 > 1:46:56gap, but final run of the luge series, six exciting days toiling

1:46:56 > 1:47:03down to this, the double Olympic champions now will try and bring it

1:47:03 > 1:47:12home for Germany.Just a little bit late into the corner. These are a

1:47:12 > 1:47:18quality act. As long as they get this right, they are starting to

1:47:18 > 1:47:23melt this, perfect. This is Germany. Walking into another old medal as we

1:47:23 > 1:47:30thought they would. They are the favourites. Starting to pull away.

1:47:30 > 1:47:41-- gold medal. No issues.A big win for them, history made. Germany

1:47:41 > 1:47:46strikes old once again, winning three out of the four luge golds.

1:47:46 > 1:47:55She can celebrate. Two golds at the games and no one in the world can

1:47:55 > 1:48:01say they have not been the best team around. That is the way to enforce

1:48:01 > 1:48:08your suppose it superiority. No mistakes from any of them. Ludwig,

1:48:08 > 1:48:12just sort of lukewarm, his run, the other two were excellent, weren't

1:48:12 > 1:48:19they?These were the favourites. As they always are. The real excitement

1:48:19 > 1:48:24was for the sort of second, third and fourth place and the difference

1:48:24 > 1:48:33between medal positions, we are looking at tenths, hundredths,

1:48:33 > 1:48:36thousands, as a team, a nation. Looking at the quality above

1:48:36 > 1:48:44everyone else.

1:48:44 > 1:48:49everyone else. For sheer consistency and skill, she hasn't put a foot

1:48:49 > 1:48:58wrong. Everyone has had little twitches and mistakes, even the

1:48:58 > 1:49:03men's winner, he wasn't perfect, he got herself into the second

1:49:03 > 1:49:10position. Felix Loch made a massive mistake.

1:49:10 > 1:49:19mistake. But she has definitely been the class act.Ludwig on the right.

1:49:19 > 1:49:28Another old medal one. Really enjoying the luge, John. It's

1:49:28 > 1:49:36obviously skeleton that will dominate the next two days. And the

1:49:36 > 1:49:40Bobsleigh will kick in in the next few days. Confirmation that Germany

1:49:40 > 1:49:50wins. Austria digging up the bronze. That is the luge team relay.

1:49:50 > 1:49:53COMMENTATOR: Germany retaining three of the four titles in the luge in

1:49:53 > 1:49:59these Olympics. All but Perot Felix Loch did the business. Hello, lovely

1:49:59 > 1:50:04to be with you, a bumper edition this afternoon, weather delays we

1:50:04 > 1:50:09accept at an Olympic Games, the game of hurry up and wait is finally over

1:50:09 > 1:50:13for the alpine skier is and it has presented us with a bumper two for

1:50:13 > 1:50:26one offer, two races today. And that is not all. China will be the next

1:50:26 > 1:50:31Winter Olympic hosts but could be first gold in Korea come in the

1:50:31 > 1:50:36pairs figure skating? The free programme to enjoy. Then we are in

1:50:36 > 1:50:41for a thrill ride, every hundredths of a second counts, the bone shaking

1:50:41 > 1:50:46skeleton event for men against a day. But late than never, the

1:50:46 > 1:50:54women's giant slalom begins, Mikaela Shiffrin taking part. And we will

1:50:54 > 1:50:58find out who will be the fastest man on skis in one of the greatest and

1:50:58 > 1:51:05grandest Olympic occasions men's downhill. One at a time on the

1:51:05 > 1:51:10mountain in snowboard cross, a helped skelter bun fight, first

1:51:10 > 1:51:17across the line counts. And it's a real favourite for me in the Winter

1:51:17 > 1:51:21Olympics, I'm not sure it's an event even you Christopher Dean could

1:51:21 > 1:51:26choreograph, and extraordinary thing. They come careering down the

1:51:26 > 1:51:30mountain, jostling for position, short track on snow. You are in for

1:51:30 > 1:51:36a treat but it's iceskating we will talk about. Before we get warmed up

1:51:36 > 1:51:40for the climax of the pairs event we make absolutely no apology for this,

1:51:40 > 1:51:45we have been once again rifling through the back catalogue of

1:51:45 > 1:51:48Torvill and Dean is greatest hits and I asked you the other day but

1:51:48 > 1:51:52you would count as one of your favourite routines. And you said

1:51:52 > 1:51:55firmly for a variety of reasons which we will go into later, Mack

1:51:55 > 1:52:05and Mabel might be the one. Just for you, here it is.

1:55:52 > 1:55:55APPLAUSE

1:56:00 > 1:56:07CHEERING APPLAUSE

1:56:07 > 1:56:15COMMENTATOR: what can you say? Absolute magic. This crowd is

1:56:15 > 1:56:18absolutely standing on their feet, stamping and cheering, the most

1:56:18 > 1:56:27amazing feeling. Jayne Torvill and list of Dean, knowing right from the

1:56:27 > 1:56:32start, no one can touch them. Faultless performance, here are the

1:56:32 > 1:56:37marks.

1:56:38 > 1:56:44marks. -- Christopher Dean.Because they have skated first, it will be

1:56:44 > 1:56:54difficult for any judge to give them a maximum six when there are another

1:56:54 > 1:57:03five hours to go after them. There are five sixes, those Union Jacks

1:57:03 > 1:57:06have every right to be waived, I am sure no one is going to beat those

1:57:06 > 1:57:14marks.Bravo. The late, great, Alan weeks, trading alongside Robin

1:57:14 > 1:57:22Cousins. You want the world title four years, 1980-84, why did you

1:57:22 > 1:57:27pick that?We heard it a year before but we thought we weren't ready for

1:57:27 > 1:57:33it so we went to the BBC Radio Foyle to an library, all the old LPs and

1:57:33 > 1:57:39we would trawl through all the music, put them on the record player

1:57:39 > 1:57:43and listen and listen and we came across this piece and it had an

1:57:43 > 1:57:47overture and it was from beginning to end and it was orchestrated,

1:57:47 > 1:57:56seamless, told a story. And it just seemed right for us. A lot of people

1:57:56 > 1:57:59that follow skating, it's still one of their favourites, lots of steps

1:57:59 > 1:58:05in it. I was tired just watching it, I hadn't seen out in ages.Neither

1:58:05 > 1:58:13had I and it takes us right back in time. I wonder how that actually

1:58:13 > 1:58:18helped in the transition towards Bolero, there is a storytelling

1:58:18 > 1:58:24element of it?Absolutely. Each year we wanted to re-invent ourselves. It

1:58:24 > 1:58:29was like a premier. The Mack and Mabel sort of started that and then

1:58:29 > 1:58:35it went on to Barnum and eventually Bolero and each year you just grow,

1:58:35 > 1:58:38you have more information, you understand more, what goes into it,

1:58:38 > 1:58:44the music am often we Thampi orchestration, we went to Barnum, it

1:58:44 > 1:58:49was how could we find that perfect orchestration but posted together,

1:58:49 > 1:58:54Michael Crawford who introduced us to the musical director of Barnum,

1:58:54 > 1:58:57we got the musicians into the studio and they recorded it for us and then

1:58:57 > 1:59:04Bolero.Let's go trawling through the archives, definitely.When?

1:59:04 > 1:59:13Tomorrow. It is lovely seeing them. I stand thing, as we saw, in the

1:59:13 > 1:59:17pairs event, there are a couple of historical moments we want to share

1:59:17 > 1:59:20with you that probably explains some of the changes over the last few

1:59:20 > 1:59:27years, particularly the Russians, 64-68, dominated it. This was the

1:59:27 > 1:59:37couple that started at. A married couple who want back-to-back in

1:59:37 > 1:59:41Grenoble and it was the start of a Soviet Russian dynasty in the pairs

1:59:41 > 1:59:46event, their skaters won or assured 12 gold medals in a row until Nagano

1:59:46 > 1:59:51in 98.

1:59:51 > 1:59:57in 98.Eventually sport became a... Everybody, they were professional

1:59:57 > 2:00:05sports people. They were employed and they would skate and so they

2:00:05 > 2:00:09took skating to another level, it wasn't just a something recreational

2:00:09 > 2:00:13and a past time, fitting it in between work, they were full-time

2:00:13 > 2:00:20skaters and they took it to a degree and they developed it to an artform,

2:00:20 > 2:00:24the athleticism but that the same time developing the artistic side,

2:00:24 > 2:00:28that is what they were known for. They could do all the jobs and lifts

2:00:28 > 2:00:33and at the same time brought this beautiful elegant quality.

2:00:33 > 2:00:35And after the Protopopovs came the human dynamo

2:00:35 > 2:00:38that is Irina Rodnina - she won three golds in a row,

2:00:38 > 2:00:40first with Alexei Ulanov and the next two with her husband

2:00:40 > 2:00:43Aleksander Zaitsev.

2:00:43 > 2:00:49She was a buzz bomb! This lady could go back to back run-through sent out

2:00:49 > 2:00:53skate almost everyone. When she did forward crossovers she got so deep

2:00:53 > 2:00:58into it and the power she could generate was amazing. I remember one

2:00:58 > 2:01:02championship when the music stopped and they didn't, continuing to the

2:01:02 > 2:01:12end.Three golds in a row.

2:01:12 > 2:01:15first with Alexei Ulanov and the next two with her husband

2:01:15 > 2:01:16Aleksander Zaitsev.

2:01:16 > 2:01:17From elegance to athleticism.

2:01:17 > 2:01:19Another step-change in style in the pairs.

2:01:19 > 2:01:22She was a buzz bomb!

2:01:22 > 2:01:25She brought that athletic side to it, and the East Germans were up

2:01:25 > 2:01:30there as well. Then it moved onto the beautiful elegance of those that

2:01:30 > 2:01:34came after.

2:01:34 > 2:01:36Amazingly, Russian skaters have only lost this title once

2:01:36 > 2:01:38since the Protopopovs - in Vancouver, when they

2:01:38 > 2:01:43were beaten by China.

2:01:43 > 2:01:51That was in 2010. Back on top of the podium in Sochi again. And in the

2:01:51 > 2:01:54free programme of the pairs competition today we expected a

2:01:54 > 2:01:58fight between the Russians and Chinese again, but Canada and

2:01:58 > 2:02:03Germany were also in the mix.

2:02:03 > 2:02:05It all comes down to this, the free programme, watched for us

2:02:05 > 2:02:09by Robin Cousins and Katherine Downes.

2:02:09 > 2:02:15ANNOUNCER:Skating next, representing

2:02:16 > 2:02:27representing Italy,.COMMENTATOR: Skating for a chance of bronze.

2:02:45 > 2:02:50The opening triple twist.

2:03:03 > 2:03:20Side by side, triple toe loop 's next. Very nice.

2:03:32 > 2:03:49Double toe loop. And triple Salchow.

2:03:56 > 2:04:00Always assured with the footwork on the lifts.

2:04:11 > 2:04:19The first of their two throws. Throw triple loop. Got it, gorgeous,

2:04:19 > 2:04:23absolutely lovely.

2:04:42 > 2:04:51And spot on on the side by side spins.

2:06:09 > 2:06:24The second through triple Lutz. And they've got it.

2:07:00 > 2:07:05That's the benchmark. If they want to win a medal, all the others will

2:07:05 > 2:07:10have to beat that.Absolutely. I know her surprise is, not once, but

2:07:10 > 2:07:16twice in one week, they delivered the skate of their lives in the team

2:07:16 > 2:07:22competition and they have just done it again. The triple twist, a level

2:07:22 > 2:07:28three they got in the team event. Level two in the short programme,

2:07:28 > 2:07:34but level three again today. No touch with the right arm. The triple

2:07:34 > 2:07:38loop, again, good height and good flight travel. Lovely running edge

2:07:38 > 2:07:43on the landing. Couldn't have done any better.It's a season's best as

2:07:43 > 2:07:48well.

2:07:50 > 2:07:53well. That catapults them up to the top of the leaderboard, into the

2:07:53 > 2:08:00gold medal position. And they will be pushing for the bronze medal

2:08:00 > 2:08:08position. That's how to kick some ice. The pair that came through in

2:08:08 > 2:08:14eighth position for the Olympic Athletes from Russia. They already

2:08:14 > 2:08:18come through the games with a team silver. Quite a story to this

2:08:18 > 2:08:21programme, Robin. I think it's a rehearsal for the first half and

2:08:21 > 2:08:32then the performance begins halfway through. See if you can spot it.

2:08:48 > 2:08:56Huge triple twist. And yes, they say the first part with just the piano

2:08:56 > 2:09:05is like being in the rehearsal room. Triple toe loop. Double toe loop,

2:09:05 > 2:09:07double loop.

2:09:32 > 2:09:35Timing completely off on the take-offs on what to have been side

2:09:35 > 2:09:44by side triple Salchows. Downgraded to a double, I suspect.

2:10:06 > 2:10:12The hands down there, I think on the second throw.

2:11:05 > 2:11:13Nicely done with the spin.

2:11:19 > 2:11:25No trouble on the throw triple loop.

2:11:30 > 2:11:38And the rehearsal is over and we go into the performance of Swan Lake.

2:11:38 > 2:11:47And the costume change.

2:13:07 > 2:13:10Needed the skate off their season to catch up with the first placed

2:13:10 > 2:13:15Italians, but it wasn't to be for Natalia Zabiiako and Alexander

2:13:15 > 2:13:25Enbert from the Olympic Athletes from Russia. This was the take off,

2:13:25 > 2:13:30and she was ahead of him already. He made the rotation and she did not.

2:13:30 > 2:13:34But because she didn't his job will be downgraded, so it's just the

2:13:34 > 2:13:38double stop what they do have a season's best. But they needed more

2:13:38 > 2:13:47than that. They needed 142 to beat the Italians. The Olympic Athletes

2:13:47 > 2:13:50from Russia, with another pair to come from that country, in second

2:13:50 > 2:13:55place for now. It will be impossible for them to challenge for bronze.

2:13:55 > 2:13:59But this pair are gunning for a place on the podium. And they do

2:13:59 > 2:14:03have their weapons in their arsenal to clinch a medal if they perform

2:14:03 > 2:14:09right here, right now. They were tenth in Sochi at the last Olympics.

2:14:09 > 2:14:15Looking to improve on that, coming to the short programme in six. Could

2:14:15 > 2:14:23they take a gold medal home to France?

2:14:23 > 2:14:30France?Vanessa and Morgan have a throw quadruple

2:14:30 > 2:14:37throw quadruple Salchows planned. But before that, a triple twist to

2:14:37 > 2:14:44come first.

2:14:47 > 2:14:56Lovely twist there. Brilliant control, good height and flight.

2:14:56 > 2:15:06Need the same now on the side by side toe loops.

2:15:07 > 2:15:18And they've got them, two double toe loops to follow.

2:15:19 > 2:15:27If the quadruple throw is going to appear, it will be here.

2:15:32 > 2:15:40They went for it.And made the rotation.

2:16:07 > 2:16:13Double Salchow from Vanessa.

2:17:36 > 2:17:44They need the throw. Yes, the triple.

2:18:48 > 2:18:52It is too tight at the top four mistakes. How much will that have

2:18:52 > 2:18:59cost them? They had their hands down on one of the throws, just doubled

2:18:59 > 2:19:07when they were for a triple. This is the throw, one, two, three... Four.

2:19:07 > 2:19:17Landed on two feet and two hands, but definitely clean. No, he did do

2:19:17 > 2:19:22a triple, she did the double.Hit a big new season's Beth, beating their

2:19:22 > 2:19:31previous mark by a couple of points, 143.19. And that means that Vanessa

2:19:31 > 2:19:34James and Morgan Cipres are our new leaders. They are still in the hunt

2:19:34 > 2:19:39for bronze.

2:19:50 > 2:19:53Yu and Zhang were fourth in the World Championships. They will be

2:19:53 > 2:20:00looking for a medal here. The Chinese looking to transport us to a

2:20:00 > 2:20:04galaxy far, far away.

2:20:32 > 2:20:39Opening with side by side triple Salchows.

2:20:54 > 2:21:06Better there, an easy flight on the triple twist.

2:21:13 > 2:21:27Triple toe loops. She struggled there as well.

2:22:46 > 2:22:50The first of their two back-to-back throws. The loop is lovely on one

2:22:50 > 2:22:58foot.

2:22:58 > 2:23:04foot. The second throw is the Salchow.

2:23:52 > 2:24:00Oh, lost the dismount there as well, on the left.

2:24:03 > 2:24:11on the left. -- on the lift.

2:24:40 > 2:24:45The music from the Star Wars soundtrack, the performance not

2:24:45 > 2:24:51quite stratospheric. The toe loop combination has been downgraded, so

2:24:51 > 2:25:00that has gone from what had been a base of 4.70, has just given them

2:25:00 > 2:25:062.60 points. Again, it is the detail. And they were the leading

2:25:06 > 2:25:17contenders. So close. And mistakes like this are just too costly.

2:25:17 > 2:25:23Slightly awkward. The second throw, plenty of time, just caught the

2:25:23 > 2:25:32heel.They tumble down the standings to fourth. The French still out in

2:25:32 > 2:25:37front, the Italians in second, and the Olympic athletes are brush in

2:25:37 > 2:25:43bronze medal position at the moment. But we do have the best pairs in the

2:25:43 > 2:25:50world yet to come. Ali Savchenko and Bruno Massow looking for the skate

2:25:50 > 2:25:56of their lives. They are just outside the medal positions right

2:25:56 > 2:26:06now by just 0.2 three. No mistakes. A great performance and it could be

2:26:06 > 2:26:16a third bronze medal at the Olympics. They need this to be

2:26:16 > 2:26:21perfect.

2:26:35 > 2:26:45May open with a triple twist. Watch the height that it flies.

2:26:45 > 2:26:54the height that it flies. -- Bay open. The first of the throws. And

2:26:54 > 2:27:03she's got it on one foot. That's clean.

2:27:16 > 2:27:21Triple Salchow, double toe loop, double toe loop. Yesterday it was

2:27:21 > 2:27:30just a double for Bruno, and it cost them dearly. Today, perfection.

2:27:41 > 2:27:53Side by side triple toe loops. Got them. This is looking good.

2:28:04 > 2:28:11Triple Salchow. That is their big, difficult elements done for them.

2:28:42 > 2:28:51Brilliant strengthened control through the lifts. -- strength and

2:28:51 > 2:29:01control.

2:30:57 > 2:31:03Foot perfect. The race for bronze is on.I think the race for gold is on.

2:31:03 > 2:31:08They were out of the medal positions before this free skate. They were

2:31:08 > 2:31:12going to be fighting for the bronze medal place, but that performance

2:31:12 > 2:31:19has now put them on a podium, and what colour that medal will be, we

2:31:19 > 2:31:22will have to find out. But I think that'll be a tough one to beat. They

2:31:22 > 2:31:31will go into the 160s. Beautiful transitions. Slight recognition

2:31:31 > 2:31:36factor, partly because they were choreographed by Christopher Dean.

2:31:36 > 2:31:42He spent time with them last year in the autumn, helping to clean and fix

2:31:42 > 2:31:46these transitions between. And for me it is the detail that will

2:31:46 > 2:31:54separate this from some of the others.

2:31:54 > 2:32:02It's going to be big, absolutely. That is the best they have skated.

2:32:02 > 2:32:13159.31, a season's best. Is that how they clinch the Olympic title?

2:32:13 > 2:32:15they clinch the Olympic title? They will have broken their own world

2:32:15 > 2:32:19record with that free skate score. It was sensational skating, wasn't

2:32:19 > 2:32:25it? And this is the couple with whom they were tussling for the bronze

2:32:25 > 2:32:32medal position.

2:32:32 > 2:32:36medal position. Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada, already team

2:32:36 > 2:32:43champions, going away from these Games with a gold medal. And the

2:32:43 > 2:32:48pressure is on these two now to hang on to a spot on the podium.

2:33:22 > 2:33:32Triple twist.

2:33:36 > 2:33:45The hardest side solo jump element, and now side by side triple Lutses.

2:33:45 > 2:33:49Hands down from Megan. Not sure it was fully rotated either. That will

2:33:49 > 2:33:57be reviewed.

2:33:59 > 2:34:16And is now quadruple through Salchow. And she's got it.

2:34:17 > 2:34:23Nine points from that one element.

2:34:23 > 2:34:36Side by side triple Salchow, double toe loop, double toe loop.

2:35:28 > 2:35:31Throw triple Lutz.

2:35:35 > 2:35:41Throw triple Lutz.

2:37:31 > 2:37:37Fighting for a medal. Fighting to hold onto a podium spot. Eric

2:37:37 > 2:37:41Radford and Megan Duhamel.They are thrilled with skate.But there was

2:37:41 > 2:37:49that mistake.Slightly, on the Lutz. And they're triple twist is not the

2:37:49 > 2:37:56strongest or highest, just level three.

2:37:57 > 2:38:01three. This is the Lutz. That's where the hands went down the.I

2:38:01 > 2:38:08think it was under rotated. And not so with the quad on one foot, so

2:38:08 > 2:38:15good to see them come out and deliver on that quad, boom. It's not

2:38:15 > 2:38:23enough to go ahead of the Germans. They are in the silver medal

2:38:23 > 2:38:30position, Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford. They needed a world record

2:38:30 > 2:38:34to chase down the Germans. In fact from everyone needs a new world

2:38:34 > 2:38:46record to chase down the Germans. So, the world champions from China,

2:38:46 > 2:38:55Sui Wenjing and Han Cong. When they are at their best, they are world

2:38:55 > 2:38:58beaters.

2:39:18 > 2:39:26And they will open their free programme with a quadruple twist, so

2:39:26 > 2:39:31four revolutions in the air from take-off.

2:39:39 > 2:39:44Side by side triple toe loops.

2:39:48 > 2:39:54Oh dear. The triples were fine, but not the combination they wanted

2:39:54 > 2:39:57afterwards with the jumps. Just singles from him.

2:40:08 > 2:40:13Of the triple Salchow for her. That was a problem in the warm up as

2:40:13 > 2:40:18well, with two falls.

2:40:51 > 2:40:59Beautiful lift.

2:41:39 > 2:41:51Triple flip. Absolutely glorious.

2:42:08 > 2:42:12Same there with the throw triple Salchow.

2:43:40 > 2:43:46It's rousing stuff, but is it enough to hold onto their lead? The Germans

2:43:46 > 2:43:51were sublime. The second half was absolutely superb, but a couple of

2:43:51 > 2:43:59very costly errors on those side by side triple jumps. The quad, one,

2:43:59 > 2:44:04two, three, four.

2:44:04 > 2:44:10two, three, four. She had fallen on the Salchow in the warm up.There is

2:44:10 > 2:44:14the hand.On the back of the heel, and then down. But nobody can touch

2:44:14 > 2:44:28them on the throws. It's not going to be enough.

2:44:29 > 2:44:34It's not enough for them to hang onto their gold medal. So Savchenko

2:44:34 > 2:44:42and Bruno Massot of Germany, they are out in front. The final skaters

2:44:42 > 2:44:45of the free skate competition, and these two will be looking to push up

2:44:45 > 2:44:51into the medals as well.

2:44:51 > 2:44:55into the medals as well. Winning silver in the team event already,

2:44:55 > 2:44:58the Olympic Athletes from Russia. They were in the silver medal

2:44:58 > 2:45:03position after the short programme, and they are relying on Christina

2:45:03 > 2:45:12Aguilera for a gold medal.

2:45:22 > 2:45:34Our final team will open their bid for gold with a quadruple twist.

2:45:34 > 2:45:42That was lovely.

2:45:47 > 2:45:58Side by side triples, first triple Salchow. He did, she didn't.

2:46:13 > 2:46:26Big throw, triple Salchow now. Oh, that's gone as well.

2:46:31 > 2:46:39Need to get the composure now for that side by side triple toe loops.

2:46:39 > 2:46:49-- the side by side triple toe loop, with double toe loops to follow.

2:48:43 > 2:48:49Into the throw, triple loop. Beautiful.

2:49:47 > 2:49:51Well, it's not going to be good enough for gold. It's not going to

2:49:51 > 2:49:56be good for silver. Will it be good enough for a medal at all?I think

2:49:56 > 2:49:59they might struggle to be on the podium, to be honest. They certainly

2:49:59 > 2:50:08did not have their normal pizzazz and champion feel about it.

2:50:08 > 2:50:18Tentative, just the double Salchow. Always strong with the throws, but

2:50:18 > 2:50:26overcooked on that one, way too far forward on the toe for the landing.

2:50:26 > 2:50:32Right, is it a medal, then, for the Olympic Athletes from Russia? No.

2:50:32 > 2:50:37It's not.

2:50:44 > 2:50:49143.25. No medal, then, for the Olympic Athletes from Russia, and

2:50:49 > 2:50:54that means that Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot learn that they are the

2:50:54 > 2:51:03Olympic champions. What fight,

2:51:03 > 2:51:06Olympic champions. What fight, what Alion to jump from fourth position

2:51:06 > 2:51:18to the top of the podium. And they are worthy winners. -- what mettle.

2:51:18 > 2:51:23They came out, laid it on the ice, and they were foot perfect. They

2:51:23 > 2:51:31were glorious. And she has been fighting for this moment for a few

2:51:31 > 2:51:36years now. Even with her previous partner, it didn't quite happen. Two

2:51:36 > 2:51:40Olympic bronze medals in the past, but she is now the Olympic champion

2:51:40 > 2:51:46at the age of 34. STUDIO: Really moving scenes, and no wonder - her

2:51:46 > 2:51:51fifth games, the partner, two bronze medals, a 15 year journey, and she

2:51:51 > 2:51:55has finally done it. From your perspective, you worked with them,

2:51:55 > 2:52:01how much did it move you do see them win the gold?I had a lump in my

2:52:01 > 2:52:03throat, just to see them do the performance, but to see the raw

2:52:03 > 2:52:07emotion at the end, and those scenes just now... She is such a

2:52:07 > 2:52:12competitor. To be at the top of your game for 15 years, five Olympic

2:52:12 > 2:52:17medals, and I was talking to her as we were choreographing the routine

2:52:17 > 2:52:20earlier in the year and saying, after the Olympics, what is after

2:52:20 > 2:52:25that? She said, I would like to keep going. She is just a competitor.

2:52:25 > 2:52:30What a difference a day makes. From the short programme, making that

2:52:30 > 2:52:34simple mistake of doubling rather than doing the triple, the other

2:52:34 > 2:52:37teams make their mistakes in the long programme, which was costly,

2:52:37 > 2:52:42but having said that, they were so on their game. It was an all or

2:52:42 > 2:52:46nothing routine.Absolutely beautiful. What was your remit when

2:52:46 > 2:52:52they approached you to choreograph a routine? We wanted to do an ice

2:52:52 > 2:52:57dance routine for pair skaters. I got the call. For Aliona, it came

2:52:57 > 2:53:02naturally. For Bruno, less, but he was really determined to apply

2:53:02 > 2:53:06himself and try to put the style in, because it's all about getting from

2:53:06 > 2:53:10one element to the next one, and how you achieve that. I think that's

2:53:10 > 2:53:16what they looked the best at today. Some people have been mentioning,

2:53:16 > 2:53:24there was a little nod in the costume...There was a little bolero

2:53:24 > 2:53:31going on.The colour as well. It is worth watching, because their

2:53:31 > 2:53:34coaches actually skate this from the sidelines. Watch the two fellows in

2:53:34 > 2:53:41the background. He has watched this every day for nine months. He's just

2:53:41 > 2:53:48with them every step of the way, willing them on.He's practically

2:53:48 > 2:53:55skating it with them. You do. You are that third part, almost. The

2:53:55 > 2:54:00sense of satisfaction at seeing this particular woman achieve her dream

2:54:00 > 2:54:06must be absolute for them too.For so many people. Competitors within

2:54:06 > 2:54:10the sport no of her, she has been around for such a long time. She has

2:54:10 > 2:54:14achieved so much. She's got silver medals, World Championship medals,

2:54:14 > 2:54:20but the gold is the one that she wanted in her trophy cabinet. They

2:54:20 > 2:54:23put the frighteners on everyone who came after them because they moved

2:54:23 > 2:54:27from fourth to first and everyone else was scrambling. The Canadians

2:54:27 > 2:54:32were first, and when you watch their routine, actually, Megan was

2:54:32 > 2:54:36delighted with this because I think she landed a quad at one point. She

2:54:36 > 2:54:39put her hands down there, so straightaway, they are getting

2:54:39 > 2:54:45deductions for that. The simplest of mistakes make all the difference

2:54:45 > 2:54:51when everybody is on their game. But they have got a gold already from

2:54:51 > 2:54:56the team event, so to go home with a bronze... And you can see the

2:54:56 > 2:55:01delight in her face. Tears of joy. You've got to imagine, you climb

2:55:01 > 2:55:08this mountain, and you get to the cliff, and then you jump, and then

2:55:08 > 2:55:14it's done. You've been building to this one moment, this four minutes

2:55:14 > 2:55:18in your career, potentially, where you could be top of the podium, and

2:55:18 > 2:55:24suddenly, you are there, you have achieved it, and it is this rush of

2:55:24 > 2:55:29all emotions at the end. When the young Chinese pair came onto the

2:55:29 > 2:55:35ice, could you sense the pressure that they were under?Their skating

2:55:35 > 2:55:39is beautiful, wonderful, and their abilities, their technique, their

2:55:39 > 2:55:46style, the emotion that they put into it. It has everything. But

2:55:46 > 2:55:50today, I haven't seen them make as many mistakes as that in the past.

2:55:50 > 2:55:56And on this particular day, yeah, it just went south for them, just off a

2:55:56 > 2:56:01little bit.They are only 22 and 25, their first Olympics.You know they

2:56:01 > 2:56:05will be the ones to be watching as we go to China for the next

2:56:05 > 2:56:10Olympics.Home games for them. They will be one of the real favourites.

2:56:10 > 2:56:15When you're at this level, for the next four years, they have to keep

2:56:15 > 2:56:18this up to carry the momentum or keep their momentum going into

2:56:18 > 2:56:24China.Is that quite a thought as a skater? You come off in thing, I've

2:56:24 > 2:56:30got a medal or what ever, and then it all starts again?Yes, for Jane

2:56:30 > 2:56:34and I, through our competitive time, as we finished the World

2:56:34 > 2:56:38Championships, I don't think we took a week off. We were right back onto

2:56:38 > 2:56:41the ice. We were a bit crazy like that, very channelled in what we

2:56:41 > 2:56:46wanted to do. Nowadays, they have to take a break because the amount of

2:56:46 > 2:56:51training

2:56:55 > 2:56:58training that they do, and the elements that they are doing are so

2:56:58 > 2:57:00rigorous on the body, so they have to pace themselves. Year in, year

2:57:00 > 2:57:03out, for the next four years, they have to stay in the forefront and

2:57:03 > 2:57:06keep their momentum. Some people might take a year off, but it is

2:57:06 > 2:57:08hard when you have been out.I don't knew if you appreciated this until

2:57:08 > 2:57:11we started watching, because you have coached and choreographed so

2:57:11 > 2:57:15many people, but since you retired from ice dancing, that is the first

2:57:15 > 2:57:21gold medal at an Olympic Games that you have choreographed.

2:57:21 > 2:57:27Congratulations.Thank you! I feel there is a little bit of British

2:57:27 > 2:57:30gold in there. It is all down to them, they put the work and the

2:57:30 > 2:57:35effort in, I just launched them. But it must be terribly satisfying to

2:57:35 > 2:57:40see a project like this come to fruition.Yes. When you are at in at

2:57:40 > 2:57:45the start of this, the music, the concept, the ideas, the first step

2:57:45 > 2:57:49on the ice, to seeing the pinnacle at the Olympics and then winning a

2:57:49 > 2:57:56gold medal, like I say, a lump in the throat.Congratulations, Chris.

2:57:56 > 2:57:58We're looking forward to the start of the men's short programme

2:57:58 > 2:58:03tomorrow. A quad fest. Thanks, Chris.

2:58:03 > 2:58:08tomorrow. A quad fest. Thanks, Chris. If there is one winter sport

2:58:08 > 2:58:12that Britain can claim to be a winter power in it is bob skeleton.

2:58:12 > 2:58:16What is it about them hurtling down the ice headfirst with your chin

2:58:16 > 2:58:20only five inches from the ice at speeds of up to 90 miles an hour? It

2:58:20 > 2:58:27may be appeals to our eccentric Britishness. There is a great

2:58:27 > 2:58:32tradition in this for our bob skeleton races. Since it has been

2:58:32 > 2:58:35included, they have won a medal at every single games, and so far, it

2:58:35 > 2:58:41is to mangles, one silver, three bronze and counting. Counting is the

2:58:41 > 2:58:45important bit, because with all the talk of the new aerodynamic suits,

2:58:45 > 2:58:51swimming around out there in Pyeongchang, maybe there is more

2:58:51 > 2:58:55scope for gold medals, not just in the women's event but in the men's.

2:58:55 > 2:58:58Matt Pinsent has been trying to ask questions about how we got so good

2:58:58 > 2:59:03at this.

2:59:03 > 2:59:09The sport of skeleton has a proud recent history for Team GB, none

2:59:09 > 2:59:12more so than Lizzy Yarnold's fantastic gold medal in Sochi four

2:59:12 > 2:59:19years ago. COMMENTATOR:Lizzy Yarnold is the Olympic champion.It

2:59:19 > 2:59:25has to be said, in the past couple of years, Lizzie, Laura Deas and Dom

2:59:25 > 2:59:29Parsons, our leading skeleton riders, have been a bit hit and

2:59:29 > 2:59:34miss. On arrival here, the Brits have gone from outside contenders to

2:59:34 > 2:59:38the sleds to beat, topping times in training. It has left some of the

2:59:38 > 2:59:42other nations wondering what on earth is going on.I was notified

2:59:42 > 2:59:48this morning about the speed suits. I am curious to know if that is

2:59:48 > 2:59:54legal. It has nothing to do with the athletes at all. Amy Williams, one

2:59:54 > 2:59:58of my best friends, her helmet in 2010 was a question, so it seems to

2:59:58 > 3:00:02be a recurring thing and I would rather address it before we start

3:00:02 > 3:00:07racing.We are always thinking outside the box, where can we find a

3:00:07 > 3:00:101% difference, improve our equipment? But there is a very

3:00:10 > 3:00:14strict rule book and everything gets checked by a jury that checks every

3:00:14 > 3:00:19single nation. There has been some chat about these British suits. It

3:00:19 > 3:00:23appeared in the paper. Is that a factor in what is making them quick?

3:00:23 > 3:00:29I don't think so. They could just have mentioned this suit, similar to

3:00:29 > 3:00:35British Cadillac cycling saying they made a wheel that was more RAM. They

3:00:35 > 3:00:38have worked on another element of and that is putting people off the

3:00:38 > 3:00:45scent.How is this suit?

3:00:45 > 3:00:48scent.How is this suit?We push the boundaries, this is the Winter

3:00:48 > 3:00:51Olympic Games, nobody sleeps in every nation will get the best kit

3:00:51 > 3:00:56they can and we are exactly the same.Have you cleared it with the

3:00:56 > 3:00:59relevant authorities before racing? All equipment is cleared and agreed

3:00:59 > 3:01:02and checked and everything, absolutely.

3:01:02 > 3:01:04Those aerodynamic suits have been creating a lot of noise

3:01:04 > 3:01:11in the sliding community.

3:01:11 > 3:01:18They have been checked and passed.

3:01:18 > 3:01:21But last night they were ruled as legal and they will be worn

3:01:21 > 3:01:23in anger first in the men's event today, by Dom Parsons

3:01:23 > 3:01:24and debutant Jerry Rice.

3:01:24 > 3:01:26For the host nation, however, the pre-race buzz

3:01:26 > 3:01:29was all about Yun Sungbin, who's bossed the World Cup races

3:01:29 > 3:01:31this season and could win South Korea's first Winter medal

3:01:31 > 3:01:32outside an ice rink!

3:01:32 > 3:01:39He has bossed the World Cup races this season.

3:01:40 > 3:01:42Four runs in total, the first two today,

3:01:42 > 3:01:45watched by Amy Williams, John Jackson and John Hunt.

3:01:45 > 3:01:56COMMENTATOR: Now, for many people, the favourite for gold, Yun Sungbin,

3:01:56 > 3:02:00for South Korea, getting a huge ovation at the top of the track and

3:02:00 > 3:02:19the bottom. We can hear the roar. He hadn't unbelievable clash with due

3:02:19 > 3:02:26Dukurs earlier in the season.UCB difference between him and the other

3:02:26 > 3:02:34races. He is a lot cleaner. The last two riders who have calmed down, the

3:02:34 > 3:02:37left-hand side as you look at the TV screen, there is a little bit of a

3:02:37 > 3:02:42wobble, but his lines are perfect. You see the helmet he has is

3:02:42 > 3:02:48brilliant, but look at the lead he has.He will smash them out of it.

3:02:48 > 3:02:52We expect him to set the standard. It looks really clean and fast and

3:02:52 > 3:02:56he's more than a second quicker than everyone else so fast up blue with a

3:02:56 > 3:03:09track record as well. Next up is Axel Jungk for Germany. Number two

3:03:09 > 3:03:14in the world.Watching the start here, watch how some start with

3:03:14 > 3:03:18their hand over the groove, but he starts with his hand in the middle,

3:03:18 > 3:03:22and I think that's a risky option where you can put too much pressure

3:03:22 > 3:03:27on and pop out the outside runner from its groove. Can that happen,

3:03:27 > 3:03:32Amy?It can. But these athletes concentrate so hard on their start.

3:03:32 > 3:03:36You hope it's a good groove that has been cut. You have to do what you

3:03:36 > 3:03:39feel comfortable with, either on the left or right of your sled, and then

3:03:39 > 3:03:46which group you pick to get the best line. He needs to make sure his core

3:03:46 > 3:03:51is a strong. But so far this German has some really clean rides. Down

3:03:51 > 3:03:55the straight, perfect control, and he was using his feet to toe tap to

3:03:55 > 3:04:01change the angle of the sled. Looking good, but his time relative

3:04:01 > 3:04:10to Yun Sungbin is way off, showing how good the Korean was. Axel Jungk

3:04:10 > 3:04:13from Germany is a high class athlete but he has been made to look

3:04:13 > 3:04:22ordinary by Yun Sungbin.

3:04:22 > 3:04:26His fourth Olympic games, the narrative is, will he be beaten by a

3:04:26 > 3:04:31Korean, having been beaten previously by a Canadian and German.

3:04:31 > 3:04:36Good power, just had to correct himself. His feet would die thou to

3:04:36 > 3:04:42the left, but usually his technique is mustered. The left-hand groove as

3:04:42 > 3:04:47we look at the screen, it seems to be giving them some issues, just

3:04:47 > 3:04:52popping out a little bit. Giving issues controlling the sled. I think

3:04:52 > 3:04:58between him and the Korean, it's for gold and. The bronze is potentially

3:04:58 > 3:05:03up for grabs with everyone else. But he has just made a little mistake.

3:05:03 > 3:05:10Will it make the difference? You see the height he gains with thehe has.

3:05:10 > 3:05:13So good at finding speed on this track usually. We will see how

3:05:13 > 3:05:21unforgiving it is.Dukurs is probably going to go second... No

3:05:21 > 3:05:28comity dropped right off and Yun Sungbin with a devastating first

3:05:28 > 3:05:32run, already has a massive advantage. -- no, he dropped right

3:05:32 > 3:05:38off. Then any of these next wave of athletes do anything about this

3:05:38 > 3:05:41amazing lead Yun Sungbin has already. For the Olympic Athletes

3:05:41 > 3:05:51from Russia, Nikita Tregubov is next. 23 yesterday, a four-time

3:05:51 > 3:05:54world champion, and coming into this Olympic Games ranked number five in

3:05:54 > 3:06:00the world. Equality athlete once again.Clearly up there in the

3:06:00 > 3:06:05rankings. Has nothing to lose. But eyes are on him. We will see how he

3:06:05 > 3:06:10does, and so far he looks like he has some good lines down the track.

3:06:10 > 3:06:14It's all about getting the oscillation, the highs and lows in

3:06:14 > 3:06:19the corner. What he's trying to do in each corner is cancelled them

3:06:19 > 3:06:23out, so no real highs or lows, just keep the fastest line through the

3:06:23 > 3:06:28corner. Into corner 12, looking good, clean into 13. Has to hold

3:06:28 > 3:06:31together and not make any mistakes because there is the uphill section

3:06:31 > 3:06:38coming through part.He is going to go second here, Tregubov. A pretty

3:06:38 > 3:06:42decent run. Into second place behind Yun Sungbin, but three tenths

3:06:42 > 3:06:51behind. Dom Parsons goes next for Great Britain. The 30-year-old from

3:06:51 > 3:06:55London, and his second Olympic Games. Has been flying in training,

3:06:55 > 3:06:59and it's now time, Amy Williams, to put that into practice.Deep breath,

3:06:59 > 3:07:06the nerves are here. He has got a great start, so we will see what

3:07:06 > 3:07:11pushed time he can get. Some good runs at Winter Burke and St Moritz

3:07:11 > 3:07:21this year. Only beaten once narrowly by Yun Sungbin. That's not too bad,

3:07:21 > 3:07:27but not brilliant. You never know, he might have some extra attention

3:07:27 > 3:07:32in his legs. But on race day, anything can happen. He has to put

3:07:32 > 3:07:36down four consistent runs and the pressure of that. So far, not

3:07:36 > 3:07:39looking too bad. His legs are a little bit all over the place. You

3:07:39 > 3:07:42can see he's having to fight a little bit, so let's hope he stays

3:07:42 > 3:07:47relaxed and calm. Good lying there, slightly different to others going

3:07:47 > 3:07:53into corner 12. This is the part of the track to keep it together and

3:07:53 > 3:07:56not make mistakes. A little clip that will probably cost him through

3:07:56 > 3:08:03the uphill section into 14.Should be top ten, maybe closer to five or

3:08:03 > 3:08:08six. Better than that, into fourth place, and he has gone ahead the

3:08:08 > 3:08:13magnificent Martins Dukurs. Less than a tenth of the second of

3:08:13 > 3:08:19bronze.This is what we have seen training with Dom Parsons. When he

3:08:19 > 3:08:22has got it right, he is faster than the Korean, but when he gets it

3:08:22 > 3:08:27wrong, he is still fast. If you can nail the technical parts on the next

3:08:27 > 3:08:31run, corner to Mike and exits nine down the straight, you will move up

3:08:31 > 3:08:37into the bronze medal position at least.Next up is the second Briton,

3:08:37 > 3:08:45Jerry Rice, rated 19 in the world, and his first Olympic games. And

3:08:45 > 3:08:49reading some of his autobiographies, he is quite a character and likes

3:08:49 > 3:08:53some fun and games. But now his Olympic Games gets deadly serious.I

3:08:53 > 3:08:59did a team-building session with Jerry as part of the build-up, and

3:08:59 > 3:09:05he is a really, really nice guy.He comes from St Moritz, so has slid a

3:09:05 > 3:09:09lot there. Great start from him. Perfect body position, just had to

3:09:09 > 3:09:15stay cool, calm and collected, but so far looking really good from

3:09:15 > 3:09:19Jerry.19th in the World Championships last year. Going very

3:09:19 > 3:09:25well, love the first half.He is one of those sliders, if he gets it

3:09:25 > 3:09:29right, he will put himself in the mix. A little bit late there. It was

3:09:29 > 3:09:33good, just needed to put his head down a little bit. He's looking a

3:09:33 > 3:09:37bit too much into the next corner. Needs to lower his head a little bit

3:09:37 > 3:09:42but it's a good run from Jerry Rice. Could easily be top ten. Jerry Rice

3:09:42 > 3:09:48with a wonderful run, going to tenth. Yun Sungbin, a big reader

3:09:48 > 3:09:56here from Tregubov and Axel Jungk.

3:09:56 > 3:10:00Some real big guns to be fired off in the next ten minutes. This is

3:10:00 > 3:10:07Tomass Dukurs. Forth in Sochi and forth in Vancouver. Make no mistake,

3:10:07 > 3:10:13his brother Martins is the headline of that particular double act, but

3:10:13 > 3:10:17Tomass Dukurs still wants to get involved.Faster than his first run

3:10:17 > 3:10:23at that stage. He really wants this, a fast push, and hold it together.

3:10:23 > 3:10:29We will see how he comes out of the first section. 1-4 is really steep

3:10:29 > 3:10:38so the push camps. -- the push counts. That's good, he just let it

3:10:38 > 3:10:44drift, but he knows how to control it into the corner 12.One thing the

3:10:44 > 3:10:48Latvians have is a beautiful style on the sled, nice and relaxed,

3:10:48 > 3:10:51letting the sled and corners do the work for them. His shoulders haven't

3:10:51 > 3:11:01once lifted off the sled. Impressive time.So impressive, three tenths of

3:11:01 > 3:11:04a second quicker than his first run. And that will shoot him well

3:11:04 > 3:11:10forward. He was already beautifully sat in seventh. And that is now what

3:11:10 > 3:11:18Dom Parsons has to do. He is next for Great Britain. Dom Parsons'

3:11:18 > 3:11:24second run. Tomass Dukurs has thrown down a big statement run. Dom needs

3:11:24 > 3:11:36similar here.Exactly the same time as last time there.50.85 in the

3:11:36 > 3:11:39first run. 50.87, given what we have seen from do-gooders, would be

3:11:39 > 3:11:44lovely here.Went Dom Parsons gets it right, he's one of the fastest in

3:11:44 > 3:11:47training. He also gets it faster when he doesn't get it quite right

3:11:47 > 3:11:53and his first run was still fast. That is one of the best lines we

3:11:53 > 3:11:56have seen through there. Will he now start pulling himself forward

3:11:56 > 3:12:01towards the medals and forget about the Latvians and people behind him?

3:12:01 > 3:12:05Come on, Dom! This is what we need. He is catching Dukurs. Smooth

3:12:05 > 3:12:12through the finish. Dom Parsons, what a finish! He has done exactly

3:12:12 > 3:12:21what do Kurds did.Come on, Dom!

3:12:21 > 3:12:24what do Kurds did.Come on, Dom!The medal chase for Great Britain is on

3:12:24 > 3:12:30here. In equal fifth place, Martins Dukurs, the legendary Martins

3:12:30 > 3:12:38Dukurs. Twice a silver medallist at the Wintel in big games. He has to

3:12:38 > 3:12:44chase down Parsons. The fastest push of the day, joint with the Korean.

3:12:44 > 3:12:48Really good push, and these guys are going for it. The medals are up for

3:12:48 > 3:12:52grabs and they want to go into the next day of races as fast as they

3:12:52 > 3:12:58can and in the best position as possible.Looks like he's losing a

3:12:58 > 3:13:03lot of time to Dom Parsons at the top of the track, but is there

3:13:03 > 3:13:07enough time left for Dom Parsons to rein in the legendary Latvians

3:13:07 > 3:13:11slider? How much speed to stay in front drop behind in the uphill

3:13:11 > 3:13:19section?There will only be a tenth in it. Only three hundredths in it.

3:13:19 > 3:13:24Can you believe, Dom Parsons is just three hundredths of the magnificent

3:13:24 > 3:13:29Martins Dukurs? And he knows how close he is. Parsons, make no

3:13:29 > 3:13:34mistake, he's in the mix. Currently in second place, the Olympic Athlete

3:13:34 > 3:13:42from Russia. This is Nikita Tregubov, number five in the world,

3:13:42 > 3:13:48celebrating his birthday yesterday. I hope those celebrations were not

3:13:48 > 3:13:54too heavy, because he needs another good run to keep right in touch with

3:13:54 > 3:13:57Dukurs, Parsons, and maybe close a little bit on the leader, Yun

3:13:57 > 3:14:03Sungbin.Solid start, fifth place. The start and Bush is so important.

3:14:03 > 3:14:07These athletes train their whole lives and all summer to get as fast

3:14:07 > 3:14:11and strong as they can with that explosiveness of the box and then

3:14:11 > 3:14:14they have to go out and learn to slide and drive and how to feel

3:14:14 > 3:14:21comfortable on the sled. Using his feet to steer through that section

3:14:21 > 3:14:24of ten and 11. Good, clean lines. Looking good. Hasn't made any major

3:14:24 > 3:14:31mistakes. In the green, so I think he will have a fast time.No mistake

3:14:31 > 3:14:38of 15. Tregubov is a contender, for sure. He goes first, more than a

3:14:38 > 3:14:42tenth of a second ahead of Dukurs and nearly two tenths ahead of

3:14:42 > 3:14:51Parsons, with one to go. The second run comes to its conclusion with the

3:14:51 > 3:14:55Korean, Yun Sungbin, the last one to go. We have been talking about

3:14:55 > 3:15:00hundredths of a second and tenths of a second. This fella, after the

3:15:00 > 3:15:05first run, was three tenths of a second clear of anybody else. If he

3:15:05 > 3:15:09can put that in again, we could already do half put the gold medal

3:15:09 > 3:15:16around his neck. This starts time, I could hear the guys in the

3:15:16 > 3:15:21commentary box next door, I could hear them. The nominal starting

3:15:21 > 3:15:23time, a season's record.

3:15:28 > 3:15:32It wouldn't surprise me if we saw a new track record at the bottom. He

3:15:32 > 3:15:36will put the afterburners on. He is not quite settled on the sled, but

3:15:36 > 3:15:44it is working for him.Seven hundredths in the lead.

3:15:47 > 3:15:49hundredths in the lead. Yun Sungbin, no mistakes, slight the ring with

3:15:49 > 3:15:57his right foot. Magnificent. Slicks 74 hundredths. A new track record.

3:15:57 > 3:16:02You can hear the crowd outside. Absolutely spectacular run. He was

3:16:02 > 3:16:05using his feet, so he wasn't thinking he was on the perfect

3:16:05 > 3:16:17lines, but that is 50.07. Yun Sungbin has taken the first two runs

3:16:17 > 3:16:25apart here in Pyeongchang, and he is the massive favourite to go on and

3:16:25 > 3:16:28win gold. The massive news for Great Britain is that there are five

3:16:28 > 3:16:32others who will chase the other two medals, and Britain's Dom Parsons,

3:16:32 > 3:16:38in fourth place, is one of those. He has put himself in a great position,

3:16:38 > 3:16:43as Jerry Rice is 12.The end of the second run for the skeleton, halfway

3:16:43 > 3:16:48through the competition. This is getting quite exciting. How

3:16:48 > 3:16:51exciting, I am trying to keep it together. As we have seen, things

3:16:51 > 3:16:59can shift in those top five places, everyone scrambling for medals. Dom

3:16:59 > 3:17:06Parsons held his call and stuck with it. The Latvians just came on

3:17:06 > 3:17:10through, Martins. It is those fine lines, and this is an unforgiving

3:17:10 > 3:17:14track, everyone has to hold it together, have a phenomenal start,

3:17:14 > 3:17:18keep it together for the top section, which is quite flat, get in

3:17:18 > 3:17:24the exit of nine, completely

3:17:25 > 3:17:28the exit of nine, completely nail it, and then the speed in the bottom

3:17:28 > 3:17:32half.Dom Parsons, a big championships, he has been top ten,

3:17:32 > 3:17:37close to a medal but never stood on a podium. It is a different

3:17:37 > 3:17:43challenge now, overnight, for him? They all have to go away, prepare

3:17:43 > 3:17:47their sleds, mentally rest, get their bodies in fighting form and

3:17:47 > 3:17:53come out here and do it all again. Look at the video, or no point? You

3:17:53 > 3:17:58might, or you might say to your coach, any key area? It is just

3:17:58 > 3:18:02about being relaxed, staying together. He trains really hard in

3:18:02 > 3:18:07the summer. And then you need to almost forget it all, forget that

3:18:07 > 3:18:12the day before even happened, because you can't go out there and

3:18:12 > 3:18:19be.What would his ideal mental set up the? Relaxation or aggression? I

3:18:19 > 3:18:25think he needs toforget, I am in the medal position. Forget that,

3:18:25 > 3:18:28because as soon as that is in your head, you start to do different

3:18:28 > 3:18:33things. He's got to stay relaxed and calm, and that will come through.

3:18:33 > 3:18:39His form, the speed etc will just naturally come. The track will be a

3:18:39 > 3:18:45special place tomorrow. It could be Korea's medal to win, and displays

3:18:45 > 3:18:49will be electric. It will go mad, won't it? Great fans, already

3:18:49 > 3:18:53shouting and cheering. If they get a medal, it will be their first of the

3:18:53 > 3:18:58games, I believe, and it will be mental. We want to know that maybe

3:18:58 > 3:19:02we could get one of the other medals. Dom is in a really great

3:19:02 > 3:19:09medal position. Jerry Rice, if he gets in the top ten, even getting a

3:19:09 > 3:19:12top 12 position would be a stunning result from him, so if he can get in

3:19:12 > 3:19:15the top ten, Great Britain and the men will have been putting down a

3:19:15 > 3:19:21really solid result in this men's competition.Runs three and four are

3:19:21 > 3:19:23tomorrow at the same time.

3:19:23 > 3:19:27competition.Runs three and four are tomorrow at the same time. Yun

3:19:27 > 3:19:31Sungbin has the picture of Ironman on his helmet. All eyes on him,

3:19:31 > 3:19:38because it could be the first South Korean ever to win a medal at the

3:19:38 > 3:19:43Winter Olympic Games outside the ice rink. Runs three and four from half

3:19:43 > 3:19:47past midnight UK time. Then it is Lizzie and Laura Deas going in the

3:19:47 > 3:19:52women's event from 11:20pm UK time. A lot to look forward to.Weather

3:19:52 > 3:19:56delays are all part and parcel of the Winter Olympics, especially in

3:19:56 > 3:19:59the Alpine events. I shudder to think how much hot chocolate we

3:19:59 > 3:20:03drank and worse over the years waiting for events to get going, so

3:20:03 > 3:20:11it's nothing new. 20 years ago, we only staged a couple of events in

3:20:11 > 3:20:15the first seven days, then we had a mad scramble, seven events over the

3:20:15 > 3:20:20last five, and so it goes. They have had problems in Pyeongchang, but at

3:20:20 > 3:20:27last, under blue skies, we were green for go this morning.

3:20:28 > 3:20:29green for go this morning. The women's giant slalom officially

3:20:29 > 3:20:40signalled the start of Shiffrin's assault on these games. The men's

3:20:40 > 3:20:46downhill, at long last. And now firmly established as another Winter

3:20:46 > 3:20:49Games favourite, the mayhem and madness of snowboard cross, where

3:20:49 > 3:20:56virtually anything goes. Just as Michael Phelps came to the Winter

3:20:56 > 3:21:02Olympics, the Summer Olympics, even, in 2008, trying to go for an

3:21:02 > 3:21:06outlandish eight gold medals, so looks outlandish the hopes of

3:21:06 > 3:21:20Mikaela Shiffrin, the American Idol going for maybe four Golds.

3:21:21 > 3:21:23going for maybe four Golds. Very few people have won free Golds Alpine

3:21:23 > 3:21:25events, so Mission impossible? Maybe not.

3:21:25 > 3:21:30events, so Mission impossible? Maybe not.I have been working towards

3:21:30 > 3:21:36this for my entire career. It helps with speed to have strength. The

3:21:36 > 3:21:46biggest thingsthing is to be able to master the hill. COMMENTATOR:

3:21:46 > 3:21:52Shiffrin...Every time I get in the start gate, I know what I need to

3:21:52 > 3:22:01do. COMMENTATOR:Shiffrin wins the slalom title.Is right now, I am

3:22:01 > 3:22:04excited with the mindset that I have. COMMENTATOR:Billion by

3:22:04 > 3:22:11Mikaela Shiffrin.I am going to execute. STUDIO: She is an Alpine

3:22:11 > 3:22:18all-rounder, and so was this lady, Chemmy Alcott. What is so special

3:22:18 > 3:22:25about this 22-year-old?She is absolutely incredible, with the

3:22:25 > 3:22:30touch to let her skis run. She has the ability to be strong, powerful

3:22:30 > 3:22:36and precise in technical scheme, but also gliding and speed. He is

3:22:36 > 3:22:40comfortable in the air, so an all-round threat. How unusual is it

3:22:40 > 3:22:43to have someone who looks so naturally suited to both the

3:22:43 > 3:22:50technical and speed events? She is one of the only ones right now,

3:22:50 > 3:22:53because the level of skiing, male and female, is so high that you have

3:22:53 > 3:22:57to specialise in order to be good at that one discipline. The fact that

3:22:57 > 3:23:01she is competitive in so many, it's incredible. When she came to Lake

3:23:01 > 3:23:05Louise last year, people were thinking, she might be going for

3:23:05 > 3:23:10experience because of the Olympic downhill, and she went and won. She

3:23:10 > 3:23:14had the red bib, which meant she was discipline leader. She didn't stop

3:23:14 > 3:23:16the downhills after because she was focusing on the technical

3:23:16 > 3:23:23discipline. It is like a stab in the leg for those who ski downhill only,

3:23:23 > 3:23:27because she had the red bib and she wasn't even racing. How dare she?

3:23:27 > 3:23:35Exactly. She makes speed. Quite a lot of people, myself included, you

3:23:35 > 3:23:40are trying to be nice, clean and fast, but she is not. She's looking

3:23:40 > 3:23:45for speed every time she pushes out the start gate.We shall see how she

3:23:45 > 3:23:49does. We always say on ski Sunday, giant slalom is the easiest to ski

3:23:49 > 3:23:54but the hardest to master. Let's see how she fares with Matt Chilton.

3:23:54 > 3:23:58COMMENTATOR: After four days of strong wind and cold temperatures,

3:23:58 > 3:24:05the weather has settled down and we are ready for the 2018 Olympic

3:24:05 > 3:24:16women's giant slalom. The first skier on the

3:24:17 > 3:24:23skier on the Hill is Moelgg from Italy. Vastly experienced. The

3:24:23 > 3:24:33course is in fantastic shape. Onto the flat section of this piste at

3:24:33 > 3:24:38young Chong. It drops down to 965 metres, so a vertical drop of 400

3:24:38 > 3:24:46metres. It is a course that is greatly appreciated by the top giant

3:24:46 > 3:24:54slalom skiers. They like it's variety of state's, flat caps and

3:24:54 > 3:25:02rollers. She is a little light on that thread. Gets away with it, and

3:25:02 > 3:25:11sets the pace. One minute -- 1:10.62. It was a solid start. The

3:25:11 > 3:25:16best of the

3:25:20 > 3:25:26best of the Italians Brignone. She has also been on the World Cup

3:25:26 > 3:25:33podium in downhill. That was a huge surprise to everybody. Her mother

3:25:33 > 3:25:41won format World Cup slalom is between 1979 and 1984. A good start

3:25:41 > 3:25:45for Brignone. She comes from the sunshine into the shade and then

3:25:45 > 3:25:49back out into this sunny part of the course. There are pockets of blue

3:25:49 > 3:25:56sky all the way down. The racers had to adjust their vision. Nice

3:25:56 > 3:26:01transition there. That is a gate that has caught out both of the

3:26:01 > 3:26:04previous starters. Brignone anticipated it well. The time to

3:26:04 > 3:26:16become a 1:10.62, and Brignone is second. Italy first and second.

3:26:16 > 3:26:19second. Italy first and second. Next ago, for Germany, one of the

3:26:19 > 3:26:27pre-Olympic favourites, the leader in the World Cup season long

3:26:27 > 3:26:34standings.

3:26:34 > 3:26:37standings. This is Victoria Rebensburg, from Germany. Off to a

3:26:37 > 3:26:42really relaxed start.

3:26:49 > 3:26:53She has doubled her advantage, 0.1 three. Standing tall after the most

3:26:53 > 3:26:57technically demanding part of the course. The blue lines are to aid

3:26:57 > 3:27:04visibility. The banana gate, and back into the next roller.

3:27:04 > 3:27:09Rebensburg has just eased up slightly. This banana gate on the

3:27:09 > 3:27:18other roller could be crucial. A beautiful day in John Peel. At last,

3:27:18 > 3:27:29-- Yongpyong. At last, the weather is playing ball. Without that

3:27:29 > 3:27:33mistake a couple of gates from the finish line, Rebensburg may have

3:27:33 > 3:27:41skied into second place.

3:27:42 > 3:27:45skied into second place. Mowinckel for Norway. She has had an

3:27:45 > 3:27:49outstanding season, currently sitting fifth in the World Cup giant

3:27:49 > 3:27:53slalom standings. The World Cup begins in October. That concludes

3:27:53 > 3:28:07this season in mid-March in Sweden. They really strong start from

3:28:07 > 3:28:11Mowinckel. Intelligent skiing. Keeping it nice and tight on every

3:28:11 > 3:28:19turn. Slightly late there. The course is chewing up quite quickly,

3:28:19 > 3:28:24the snow surface degrading as each racer comes down and carves their

3:28:24 > 3:28:28way through the top surface. Relatively soft, the racing surface

3:28:28 > 3:28:34here in Yongpyong.

3:28:35 > 3:28:40here in Yongpyong. Mowinckel almost sees the skis out but does enough to

3:28:40 > 3:28:44go ahead of the German. She made a mistake but gets home and dry, and

3:28:44 > 3:28:53she will be back for the second run. Mikaela Shiffrin is ready to race.

3:28:53 > 3:29:00The American, just 22 years old. She won the slalom Olympic title four

3:29:00 > 3:29:09years ago in Sochi when she was just 18. But she has been dominant in the

3:29:09 > 3:29:17first quarter of the World Cup season. She has won in giant slalom

3:29:17 > 3:29:21twice already this season. She has been totally dominant in her

3:29:21 > 3:29:25favoured discipline of slalom, in which she is the defending champion.

3:29:25 > 3:29:31And the green light has been replaced by the red light at

3:29:31 > 3:29:34intermediate number three. She is late there, fell down the side of

3:29:34 > 3:29:40that roller. She might have lost another ten. Now, she settled in and

3:29:40 > 3:29:45drives for the line. How close is Shiffrin? Good enough for second.

3:29:45 > 3:29:51Wonderful skills on display from Shiffrin.

3:29:51 > 3:29:55Shiffrin. Number eight ready to go for Switzerland, what they charge

3:29:55 > 3:30:02out of the start

3:30:02 > 3:30:05out of the start gate for Lara Gut. Super-G will perhaps be her best

3:30:05 > 3:30:08chance of a medal in these Winter Olympic Games. She has started

3:30:08 > 3:30:15strongly. O! She is down, and Lara Gut can't stop. She has taken up the

3:30:15 > 3:30:21photographers. Goodness me! Lara Gut has only just returned from injury.

3:30:21 > 3:30:31There are maybe a broken camera or two, but Gut is OK.

3:30:33 > 3:30:40Sara Hector, missed a lot of last season with injury. Three top five

3:30:40 > 3:30:45finishes this season though. Pretty straightforward through the first

3:30:45 > 3:30:56turn, quite flat. How close is Hector? 14 hundredths behind. She

3:30:56 > 3:31:01has to stand tall and work the skis through this really tough section.

3:31:01 > 3:31:06The Italian coaches laid out best track and rightly so, made it as

3:31:06 > 3:31:11tough as it can be. The roller, and Sara Hector is keeping herself in

3:31:11 > 3:31:18touch. Manuela Moelgg leads for Italy, the 34-year-old. Incredible

3:31:18 > 3:31:2522-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin is second. Federica Brignone is third.

3:31:25 > 3:31:29Sara Hector is the first of the Swedish skiers. She goes fifth. Word

3:31:29 > 3:31:35will reach the top of the track that the last red gate has to be watched.

3:31:35 > 3:31:45Marta Bassino. A huge roar for the 21-year-old. An out and out giant

3:31:45 > 3:31:54slalom specialist. This is her discipline.

3:31:54 > 3:32:00discipline. And Marta Bassino is just about matching Manuela Moelgg.

3:32:00 > 3:32:05Two hundredths of a second is all that separates the two Italians.

3:32:05 > 3:32:10Lovely skiing from Marta Bassino, as we follow her from the cable-cam

3:32:10 > 3:32:18high above the trees. You can see the speed and also the damage done

3:32:18 > 3:32:25as the snow gets eroded as each skier comes down. A couple of big

3:32:25 > 3:32:30mistakes from Marta Bassino. What a beautiful morning in the mountains

3:32:30 > 3:32:33of Korea. Marta Bassino continues to rack up the errors but finishes

3:32:33 > 3:32:39within half a second of the lead, despite the mistakes, carrying good

3:32:39 > 3:32:49speed all the way down. The Italians are there in force. Frida Hansdotter

3:32:49 > 3:32:55from Sweden. New colours in the Olympic Games for the Swedish team.

3:32:55 > 3:33:03Multicoloured race suit for Frida Hansdotter.

3:33:03 > 3:33:07Hansdotter. Frida Hansdotter, better known as a slalom skier rather than

3:33:07 > 3:33:12a GS skier, having a really good run. Three hundredths off the pace

3:33:12 > 3:33:19of Manuela Moelgg. Frida Hansdotter, a former World Cup slalom champion,

3:33:19 > 3:33:23showing improving form in giant slalom this season. Manuela Moelgg

3:33:23 > 3:33:29still leading the way for Italy. At the next intermediate, Frida

3:33:29 > 3:33:35Hansdotter, having struggled on the steep is 0.94 off the pace but still

3:33:35 > 3:33:40potentially looking at a top ten finish here. Frida Hansdotter of

3:33:40 > 3:33:45Sweden just leads inside the penultimate red and goes seventh. A

3:33:45 > 3:33:50fine run from Frida Hansdotter.

3:33:50 > 3:33:56British number one Alex Tilley from Aberdeenshire. A member of the

3:33:56 > 3:34:02Gordon skiers club. Coached by Noel Baxter, the younger brother of Alain

3:34:02 > 3:34:07Baxter. A good start from Alex Tilley, who has had promising form

3:34:07 > 3:34:12in giant slalom this season. In Killington she set the ninth

3:34:12 > 3:34:18quickest time in the first run. She's a little late there. That was

3:34:18 > 3:34:24right at the bottom of the steep, so may not have been too costly. Taking

3:34:24 > 3:34:30lots of risks here.

3:34:31 > 3:34:35lots of risks here. And Alex Tilley does a full 360 and crashes out of

3:34:35 > 3:34:40the Olympic giant slalom. She was pushing hard, throwing everything at

3:34:40 > 3:34:46this first run. And eventually she ran out of luck. Manuela Moelgg,

3:34:46 > 3:34:52first on the Hill, into top spot. Two tenths clear of Mikaela Shiffrin

3:34:52 > 3:34:55with Federica Brignone in third. Mikaela Shiffrin has the earphones

3:34:55 > 3:35:02in. Manuela Moelgg will be last to ski. What a moment for her. Viktoria

3:35:02 > 3:35:06Rebensburg was the Olympic champion eight years ago at the Vancouver

3:35:06 > 3:35:14games. On the mountain in Whistler she claimed gold. Four years ago in

3:35:14 > 3:35:21Sochi, she was bronze medallist in the Olympic giant slalom. Make no

3:35:21 > 3:35:29mistake, Viktoria Rebensburg is currently on top of the game in

3:35:29 > 3:35:36giant slalom and is contender for victory this time. When in more than

3:35:36 > 3:35:44300 races this season, winning in Killington, in Italy, and two second

3:35:44 > 3:35:52places. And she is still in front of Tessa Worley by three quarters of a

3:35:52 > 3:36:00second. Worley, Viktoria Rebensburg and Shiffrin are three of the top

3:36:00 > 3:36:04names in World Cup giant slalom at all still in this competition along

3:36:04 > 3:36:08with one or two Italians you fancy their chances. Manuela Moelgg will

3:36:08 > 3:36:18be last to ski. Viktoria Rebensburg keeps it smooth all the way, and

3:36:18 > 3:36:23aggressive, the knees absorbing all the terrain changes. She tucks into

3:36:23 > 3:36:26go first. Viktoria Rebensburg leads the Olympic giant slalom by nearly

3:36:26 > 3:36:35half a second. Frida Hansdotter is next to ski, a superb slalom skier.

3:36:35 > 3:36:40Her giant slalom performance this morning was one of her best ever

3:36:40 > 3:36:46giant slalom runs that I have seen. Can she turn it around? She is

3:36:46 > 3:36:54seventh quickest after the first run. Minimum air time. 0.13 is the

3:36:54 > 3:36:57lead over Viktoria Rebensburg with which she starts the second run and

3:36:57 > 3:37:01she adds another three tenths. An electrifying start from Frida

3:37:01 > 3:37:08Hansdotter from Sweden. Has only had one top ten finish in GS this

3:37:08 > 3:37:12season, and hasn't stopped making the podium in slalom racing. This

3:37:12 > 3:37:18could be the giant slalom day of her life. A tenth of a second in front

3:37:18 > 3:37:22of Viktoria Rebensburg as the wind starts to buffer the races coming

3:37:22 > 3:37:26down the track. It was still and calm this morning but the dreaded

3:37:26 > 3:37:31wind has returned to make life difficult for the later starters.

3:37:31 > 3:37:40Frida Hansdotter trails by 0.4 four. The top three divided by a short

3:37:40 > 3:37:45enough time to get in among the provisional medal positions. Frida

3:37:45 > 3:37:49Hansdotter tucks in at the line and goes into silver. Viktoria

3:37:49 > 3:37:55Rebensburg lead me away for Germany. Frida Hansdotter into second for

3:37:55 > 3:37:59Sweden. The Swedish supporters still have Sara Hector, who will be next

3:37:59 > 3:38:11up. A champion eight years ago, leading the 2018 instalment.

3:38:11 > 3:38:14leading the 2018 instalment. Sara Hector's turn, a quarter of a second

3:38:14 > 3:38:16is her advantage over Viktoria Rebensburg after the first run. It's

3:38:16 > 3:38:26not much. But races are won by less. That's a good start, rhythmical, a

3:38:26 > 3:38:30metronomic start from Sara Hector. Then she made a mess of the landing

3:38:30 > 3:38:34of the job and had to check before she could carry on her way. No

3:38:34 > 3:38:42damage done. Not yet, anyway. Might come back to haunt her at the next

3:38:42 > 3:38:49intermediate. A former Junior World Championships in giant slalom, but

3:38:49 > 3:38:55that was a long time ago. Now she has gone behind. Sara Hector heads

3:38:55 > 3:39:00into the teeth of the wind, which is bothering the athletes in the middle

3:39:00 > 3:39:05part of the course. It's at the top, but not bad at the bottom. But on

3:39:05 > 3:39:12the steep it's a factor. Sara Hector, a difference of six tenths

3:39:12 > 3:39:18of a second. At this rate, she will ski out of the medal positions. A

3:39:18 > 3:39:24little late again. Sara Hector tax income are desperately trying to get

3:39:24 > 3:39:30speed across the line, but she is fifth. The wind was definitely a

3:39:30 > 3:39:44factor. Marta Bassino is on her way. For Italy. Giant slalom is her

3:39:44 > 3:39:48thing. This is her specialist discipline. She has been improving

3:39:48 > 3:39:58all the time. Fourth in complex on Italian snow just prior to making

3:39:58 > 3:40:02the trip to Pyeongchang. Started with a lead of a quarter of a second

3:40:02 > 3:40:06over Viktoria Rebensburg. Now hitting the middle part of the

3:40:06 > 3:40:11course. Wind is waiting around the next corner for Marta Bassino. She

3:40:11 > 3:40:17was a little late coming onto the steep. As a result, she trails

3:40:17 > 3:40:21Viktoria Rebensburg by 22 hundredths of a second. The wind seems to have

3:40:21 > 3:40:25eased up slightly in a middle part of the course. There was snow being

3:40:25 > 3:40:31blown around and that has stopped now. Sara Hector had the worst of

3:40:31 > 3:40:35it. Marta Bassino seems to be in relatively calm air, but still

3:40:35 > 3:40:41trails. Enough to put her professionally in the podium

3:40:41 > 3:40:45positions, but I don't think she will be able to dislodge Viktoria

3:40:45 > 3:40:50Rebensburg from gold medal position. Marta Bassino has gone silver. Good

3:40:50 > 3:40:53finish.

3:40:58 > 3:41:09Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway is next up. Look at that, straight into the

3:41:09 > 3:41:14tuck, aggressive and accurate. Giant slalom skiing, she is ripping it up

3:41:14 > 3:41:18on the top. Ragnhild Mowinckel handled the job well. Is she still

3:41:18 > 3:41:26in front, and if so by how much? She has added three tenths to her lead.

3:41:26 > 3:41:29Sensational start from Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway, who has never

3:41:29 > 3:41:35had a World Cup win but has come close this season, a second in the

3:41:35 > 3:41:38Italian giant slalom. On the podium at the valve is their super-g. She

3:41:38 > 3:41:47is capable of winning medals in downhill, super-g and GS in

3:41:47 > 3:41:53Pyeongchang. It. But as she came over the roller. Has it damaged her

3:41:53 > 3:41:57time? 0.38 was the advantage last time the clock stopped. She is now

3:41:57 > 3:42:02in the red zone but only just. She knows she has made errors, she has

3:42:02 > 3:42:07to do let it run and take a risk to remove Viktoria Rebensburg from gold

3:42:07 > 3:42:13medal position. Ragnhild Mowinckel goes first! Gold medal position for

3:42:13 > 3:42:24the Norwegian. What a finish.

3:42:24 > 3:42:26the Norwegian. What a finish. Her outstanding season continues. She

3:42:26 > 3:42:36leads the Olympic giant slalom. Mowinckel has gold at the moment

3:42:36 > 3:42:43with Viktoria Rebensburg in silver and Marta Bassino in bronze. Three

3:42:43 > 3:42:52to go in the Olympic giant slalom. Federica Brignone is next up.

3:42:52 > 3:42:55Federica Brignone is next up. She is a superb technician, but has also

3:42:55 > 3:43:00learned to ski downhill in super-g in recent seasons. And that has

3:43:00 > 3:43:06helped her straight-line speed in giant slalom. 0.26 was the lead at

3:43:06 > 3:43:14the top and it has been reduced. Mowinckel's secret was nailing the

3:43:14 > 3:43:18top ten turns, the current leader, that's where she was better than

3:43:18 > 3:43:22anyone else. Federica Brignone is slightly more cautious. Back into

3:43:22 > 3:43:31the green. Back in front. A little back seated there. Federica Brignone

3:43:31 > 3:43:35is having to work hard through some of these turns. A little late again.

3:43:35 > 3:43:42Mowinckel next split... It's only two hundredths for Federica

3:43:42 > 3:43:49Brignone. It's so tight in this second run. Federica Brignone could

3:43:49 > 3:43:54still ski into a medal position but what colour would it be? Almost home

3:43:54 > 3:44:04for Italy, tucking in and going into silver. With just two skiers to

3:44:04 > 3:44:15come, Ryan Hill Mowinckel is guaranteed a medal! -- Ragnhild

3:44:15 > 3:44:22Mowinckel is guaranteed a medal. Now it's the turn of Mikaela Shiffrin.

3:44:22 > 3:44:280.35 was the advantage after the first leg. Shiffrin pushes out at

3:44:28 > 3:44:33the start, still pushing between Gates one and two. Beautiful turns

3:44:33 > 3:44:37from Mikaela Shiffrin. She is the finest exponent of giant slalom and

3:44:37 > 3:44:41slalom skiing in the world right now, in a league of her own when it

3:44:41 > 3:44:47comes to the technical aspect of the sport. It's a smooth, error-free

3:44:47 > 3:44:52start from Mikaela Shiffrin. Her advantage over Mowinckel has been

3:44:52 > 3:44:55reduced slightly, but it's still green as she comes into the first

3:44:55 > 3:45:01steep section. Nice and high in the line.

3:45:03 > 3:45:06line. Shiffrin is getting after this giant slalom second run. The slalom

3:45:06 > 3:45:14champion four years ago at the age of 18. Now at 22 she is looking for

3:45:14 > 3:45:19her second Olympic title. She could win three or possibly four gold

3:45:19 > 3:45:23medals in Pyeongchang in 2018, and she is on her way to a gold medal

3:45:23 > 3:45:28position, surely, if she stays on her feet. It has been lightning

3:45:28 > 3:45:32quick from Mikaela Shiffrin from top to bottom. One mistake, but she has

3:45:32 > 3:45:37enough in reserve and has the gold medal position with one to go.

3:45:37 > 3:45:41Shiffrin risked everything on the last six turns and nearly came

3:45:41 > 3:45:46unstuck. But she leads the way.

3:45:50 > 3:45:59One skier to come.

3:46:07 > 3:46:13Moelgg is the last skier on the Hill. The veteran Italian. If she

3:46:13 > 3:46:17wins a medal right now, she weren't careful so we have got used over the

3:46:17 > 3:46:20years to see the second run challenges from Moelgg, where she

3:46:20 > 3:46:27puts her foot to the floor and takes chances.

3:46:27 > 3:46:33chances. She trails Shiffrin by 0.21, not the smoothest start for

3:46:33 > 3:46:40Moelgg, but plenty of Touraine left on this course. The Italian can put

3:46:40 > 3:46:45herself back in contention. 0.63 now. She is potentially out of the

3:46:45 > 3:46:51medals. The Italian has made a couple of mistakes. The course has

3:46:51 > 3:46:56seen 29 others go before, so it has suffered erosion with all these

3:46:56 > 3:47:02steel edges slicing through the top surface. Shiffrin will be the

3:47:02 > 3:47:07Olympic champion. Mowinckel will take the silver, Brignone the

3:47:07 > 3:47:12bronze. And I think that Moelgg will leave the giant slalom empty-handed.

3:47:12 > 3:47:18Can she fight back in amongst the medals? Oh, she is only eight.

3:47:18 > 3:47:25Mikaela Shiffrin is the Olympic champion for the second time. She

3:47:25 > 3:47:32begins her quest for a handful of Olympic medals with victory in the

3:47:32 > 3:47:41giant slalom by 0.39 to Mowinckel, with Brignone taking the bronze.

3:47:41 > 3:47:52STUDIO: Shiffrin joins the powerfully elegant ranks of people

3:47:52 > 3:48:00like vanilla company

3:48:00 > 3:48:04like vanilla company only --...She knew she was going out there to win.

3:48:04 > 3:48:12She was pushed by Mowinckel, the Norwegian, who is speaking at the

3:48:12 > 3:48:17right time. She is full of self belief, and that is Norway's first

3:48:17 > 3:48:22medal since 1936.Amazing.Back to Shiffrin, she dominated from the

3:48:22 > 3:48:26start. The extra pushes she was putting in, clean on the skis,

3:48:26 > 3:48:30building a big angle at the top and charging into those gates. Now, is

3:48:30 > 3:48:41this hat-trick/ Quad on here? What about the timetable now? It has all

3:48:41 > 3:48:44got a bit compressed. She potentially could have three races

3:48:44 > 3:48:49back-to-back. She has the defence of her slalom, and maybe the Super-G,

3:48:49 > 3:48:54though that seems to be in doubt. The original programme was perfect.

3:48:54 > 3:48:59The day is being stacked with the crazy wind we had. I would have said

3:48:59 > 3:49:03three, for sure. The slalom tomorrow is risky and anything can happen,

3:49:03 > 3:49:08but she is definitely the favourite. The combined, so comfortable on the

3:49:08 > 3:49:11downhill long boards that I would say that too. I would say that

3:49:11 > 3:49:19Super-G, she has a good chance, but her mother has said

3:49:19 > 3:49:22her mother has said that since there are three different races with

3:49:22 > 3:49:27different equipment on consecutive days, it will be tough. It is hard

3:49:27 > 3:49:32mentally, so her mum has said that there is a chance she won't raise

3:49:32 > 3:49:37the Super-G. I think it depends how she is tomorrow. If she has a great

3:49:37 > 3:49:40race and doesn't expend too much energy, the camp might change their

3:49:40 > 3:49:44mind. That is what they are saying. It is about the combined later on in

3:49:44 > 3:49:51the games.Let's have our quick look at this explosive second run. She

3:49:51 > 3:49:55was vying with Moelgg and she knew she had to go for this. It was not a

3:49:55 > 3:50:00cruise.It was a fight, but she went out the start gate with the bit in

3:50:00 > 3:50:04her teeth as she always does. So disciplined with the upper body. A

3:50:04 > 3:50:09nice little jump, soft landing, always rolling at the top of the

3:50:09 > 3:50:12terms, extending the legs away from her, which means the skis tip up

3:50:12 > 3:50:20onto a big angle and then arc through the snow. It is icy snow.

3:50:21 > 3:50:26When Lara fell earlier, we saw how far she went. This PG carries to the

3:50:26 > 3:50:31bottom of the course, that is her strength, the steep to flat section.

3:50:31 > 3:50:40It was a bit jab to recover and you can see that the Klizan not so

3:50:40 > 3:50:46can see that the Klizan not so coin -- this skis are not so clean. The

3:50:46 > 3:50:49competitors who come later do have to deal with the course that is

3:50:49 > 3:50:56rotted.The front ones get the benefit of the clean course. It

3:50:56 > 3:51:02shows that the women who win our talented across-the-board.All

3:51:02 > 3:51:06right, congratulations, that is gold number two of her career, the first

3:51:06 > 3:51:11of a possible Quad, we shall see. As you said, a fantastic day from

3:51:11 > 3:51:17Norway's perspective as well. We have Mowinckel Cinema is this a name

3:51:17 > 3:51:24we will hear of more? It is her first global medal. She has been up

3:51:24 > 3:51:30there with the girls. The Norwegians rafted me for the last few years,

3:51:30 > 3:51:33she was one of the up-and-coming skiers, and already, she was so

3:51:33 > 3:51:38strong. Now she is finding her own. Look at the skiing, so full of self

3:51:38 > 3:51:44belief. She was in amazing position to attack and she didn't choke. She

3:51:44 > 3:51:48made mistakes, took risks and the speed came. I have got goose bumps

3:51:48 > 3:51:53now, because I am so impressed with how she handled all that pressure.

3:51:53 > 3:51:59The Norwegians are this global talent in ski racing, but she is one

3:51:59 > 3:52:05of the only females out there who are going for it. Really impressive,

3:52:05 > 3:52:13and like you said, in Super-G and downhill...We have the slalom

3:52:13 > 3:52:17tomorrow, and then the first sighting of Lindsey Vonn on

3:52:17 > 3:52:22Saturday. I think everybody is fascinated to see a potential US

3:52:22 > 3:52:31derby between Shiffrin and Vaughan. It may not come on Saturday. --

3:52:31 > 3:52:39Vonn.I think Mikaela Shiffrin. The downhill to use it as practice for

3:52:39 > 3:52:42the Alpine combined. The more time she gets on those long skis, the

3:52:42 > 3:52:46more prepared and comfortable she will be, and the more she will be

3:52:46 > 3:52:50able to attack for that final gold in the Alpine combined. We are

3:52:50 > 3:52:54talking about the women's downhill, but today, at last, the men's

3:52:54 > 3:53:00downhill. We were extremely excited. Chemmy has the screen all sorted

3:53:00 > 3:53:05out.

3:53:08 > 3:53:15out. You have Killie, Zurbriggen, the list goes on. Somebody was going

3:53:15 > 3:53:18to cement themselves into Olympic history today. Perhaps most famous

3:53:18 > 3:53:23of all is, of course, Franz Klammer, who careered down the mountain at

3:53:23 > 3:53:27his home Olympics in 1976 in Innsbruck, a man on the edge of

3:53:27 > 3:53:38control. COMMENTATOR:Here is Franz Klammer, every I will be on him. He

3:53:38 > 3:53:42has been skiing with new skis that have had holes cut in the toes. We

3:53:42 > 3:53:47looked at them and they did not appear to be lie. Look to the

3:53:47 > 3:53:55midpoint time. 13.24, just outside, but he can make it up on the lower

3:53:55 > 3:53:58half. The brilliance of this man, challenging the reigning Olympic

3:53:58 > 3:54:11champion. A magnificent run so far. Franz Klammer going at 15. 22. The

3:54:11 > 3:54:18hero of Austria takes the leap well, survives it well. Cut down, get

3:54:18 > 3:54:30sailor malign. The time... He's done it. Franz Klammer has done it!

3:54:30 > 3:54:33it. Franz Klammer has done it! -- gets to the line.Just listen to

3:54:33 > 3:54:38that. It just still get you going. Pure daring and commitment. They

3:54:38 > 3:54:43don't make them like that these days, do they?Back then, I think

3:54:43 > 3:54:48they used to walk up the slopes. At least now we have machines and get

3:54:48 > 3:54:54to ride on a lift and ski down. Back then, no safety nets, people lining

3:54:54 > 3:54:59it, and yet they were on the limit every single term. You see it with

3:54:59 > 3:55:05hay bales for netting. As a downhill racer yourself, what are the

3:55:05 > 3:55:09conflicting messages that go through your head when you are starting in a

3:55:09 > 3:55:13start gay, just before you go win to take your turn? You feel scared. You

3:55:13 > 3:55:19feel fear, the butterflies in your stomach are telling you this is the

3:55:19 > 3:55:23craziest thing ever. I think these are good emotions to feel when you

3:55:23 > 3:55:26are doing winter sports because it shows you have respect for what

3:55:26 > 3:55:32you're about to do. So many other kids say, I know I am in the Luke

3:55:32 > 3:55:37not allowed to be scared, but I am fearful, and I say, that is natural.

3:55:37 > 3:55:41It is mental to throw yourself down a mountain at 70 miles an hour, but

3:55:41 > 3:55:44it is about accepting that, knowing you will be on the edge and that

3:55:44 > 3:55:49that is the fine line between success and possible disaster, but

3:55:49 > 3:55:53the adrenaline is addictive. We used to interview the guys coming down,

3:55:53 > 3:55:57and the women, and they would come down after throwing themselves off a

3:55:57 > 3:56:00mountain and rationalise the experience in five different

3:56:00 > 3:56:03languages at the bottom to all the different interviewers. It is

3:56:03 > 3:56:12extraordinary, really is. What does the Olympic title do for your CV in

3:56:12 > 3:56:18downhill racing?It is the ultimate. Men's downhill, probably a toss-up

3:56:18 > 3:56:23between the kitsch feel downhill and the Olympics. In Korea, it is a

3:56:23 > 3:56:30sprint downhill, and it comes around every format years. You have done

3:56:30 > 3:56:35thousands of hours of work, mentally and physically, and then you have

3:56:35 > 3:56:39one minute and 40 seconds to put your life on the line and come away

3:56:39 > 3:56:46with ultimate glory. At Sochi, it was a risk and reward course. This

3:56:46 > 3:56:51one has been described as a bit vanilla. It is a motorway, but the

3:56:51 > 3:56:58course they have set up on it is quite technical, with lots of times.

3:56:58 > 3:57:01Since the test event, they have built more to rain and put tunnels

3:57:01 > 3:57:05under the slope, so you have rollers and to rein in there. It is an easy

3:57:05 > 3:57:10slide, but as Stendhal said after the first training run, it is not

3:57:10 > 3:57:17easy to go fast, so I expect to see risk, and that will be rewarded with

3:57:17 > 3:57:21podium positions.Graham Bell is never fearful of any cause, whether

3:57:21 > 3:57:24it is vanilla or the toughest you can imagine. And he does it with one

3:57:24 > 3:57:30ski pole and a camera. He is a five-time Olympian. Your heart is

3:57:30 > 3:57:34always in your mouth when you see this. Enjoy this, one of the great

3:57:34 > 3:57:40pieces of television of any Winter Games.Let's look at the men's

3:57:40 > 3:57:46Olympic downhill at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre. This is what the

3:57:46 > 3:57:49racers have to focus on. It starts pretty much straightaway, because

3:57:49 > 3:57:55you come around this right footed term, and you dive down onto this

3:57:55 > 3:58:01bumpy Traverse, really important to carry the speed over these little

3:58:01 > 3:58:08rollers, through the bumps here. Then really let it fly there. This

3:58:08 > 3:58:17is the Gariwang jump, and onto the roller-coaster section. Steep as

3:58:17 > 3:58:21part of the course here. There are tunnels under the track, and you

3:58:21 > 3:58:26have to really absorb the rollers. Coming up to the second jump now,

3:58:26 > 3:58:33Dragon claw, straight up off there, and heading down towards the forest

3:58:33 > 3:58:40road. This turn here is crucial. It's called the paradise turn, and

3:58:40 > 3:58:48it brings you from the steep onto the flat. It's the third jump. Over

3:58:48 > 3:58:57that. Heading towards the blue Dragon Valley. Really important to

3:58:57 > 3:59:05keep the speed going as you go into this almost half pipe section of the

3:59:05 > 3:59:10course, just rolling from edge to edge. Coming out of the blue Dragon

3:59:10 > 3:59:17Valley, over the little roller, heading towards the magic tree.

3:59:17 > 3:59:25There it is on the left of the course. In sight of the finish, onto

3:59:25 > 3:59:30this little fall away section, carrying speed through the last

3:59:30 > 3:59:39turn, heading towards the last jump. This is a big flight. And across the

3:59:39 > 3:59:49line. Well, the course conditions are absolutely perfect. These

3:59:49 > 3:59:52freezing temperatures have made it absolutely excellent for making

3:59:52 > 4:00:00snow. It's fast, it has grip and it will be a great race.At long last,

4:00:00 > 4:00:04it is a stunning morning, and it has been worth waiting because

4:00:04 > 4:00:10conditions are now perfect for the ribbon event at the Olympic Winter

4:00:10 > 4:00:18Games - men's downhill. Thomas Dressen is a way for Germany.

4:00:18 > 4:00:2424-year-old, made his mark in January by

4:00:24 > 4:00:28January by winning in Kitspiel. What a way to get your first victory on

4:00:28 > 4:00:32the top is course of old. Gravity sends you off to the skier's left

4:00:32 > 4:00:39and you have to fight against that.

4:00:40 > 4:00:46He flies the Gariwang jump. Thomas Dressen was the first to ski in the

4:00:46 > 4:00:51downhill stage of the Olympic combined won by Marcel Hirscher

4:00:51 > 4:00:54earlier in the week. He was the quickest man on the mountain. Nobody

4:00:54 > 4:01:00was able to ski quicker than Thomas Dressen. This is good racing. Hasn't

4:01:00 > 4:01:05put a foot wrong just yet. Getting bounced around. The next jump,

4:01:05 > 4:01:10standing on the right foot and into the Paradise turn, just lost a

4:01:10 > 4:01:14little bit of ground there, but not too much speed. It goes flat after

4:01:14 > 4:01:23the Paradise turn, with the drop and towards the Blue Dragon Valley. The

4:01:23 > 4:01:29narrowest part of the course. Spectacular racing here. Down

4:01:29 > 4:01:32towards the Magic tree. Gets airborne again. We will keep an eye

4:01:32 > 4:01:41on that job because Matthias Mayer flew it in the downhill part of the

4:01:41 > 4:01:46combined. So did Marcel Hirscher. Thomas Dressen kept it relatively

4:01:46 > 4:01:51low and short, his flight. The first man on the course, taking off,

4:01:51 > 4:02:09flying Quebec jump. The time is 1:41.03. Dominik Paris. Out of the

4:02:09 > 4:02:17start like an Italian speed skater. Eight hundredths quicker than Thomas

4:02:17 > 4:02:22Dressen at the intermediate time, onto the bumpy dragon Ridge. Trying

4:02:22 > 4:02:29to stay as high as he can. It has got slightly better for Paris. 18

4:02:29 > 4:02:34hundredths of a second. A big, controlled flight on the Gariwang

4:02:34 > 4:02:41jump. Now heading off to the Dragon claw part of the course. Nine

4:02:41 > 4:02:44hundredths in front. It has been green all the way for Dominik Paris,

4:02:44 > 4:02:51the third best downhill racer of the current season. Had a win on home

4:02:51 > 4:02:57snow earlier in the year at Borneo on a similarly rough and bumpy

4:02:57 > 4:03:02course. Winding down the windows there. Bumpy landing, and Paradise

4:03:02 > 4:03:07turn could sort them out today and Paris didn't make the best of it.

4:03:07 > 4:03:13Down towards the Blue Dragon Valley. It was green all the way and is

4:03:13 > 4:03:19still green despite the mistake. Paris might have taken a new line

4:03:19 > 4:03:23which others might not be able to. He will fly here and actually keeps

4:03:23 > 4:03:32it quite low. We will compare that, see if it brings him the reward.

4:03:32 > 4:03:37Paris is still in front. Six green lights down the course. But it's

4:03:37 > 4:03:44this final time that really matters. Paris tucks in for the line. He

4:03:44 > 4:03:58leads the Olympic downhill. By a quarter of a second.

4:04:01 > 4:04:11First-time Olympian, tenth last year at St Moritz. Didn't skate for as

4:04:11 > 4:04:17Paris did, Brice Roger. Down into the aerodynamic tucked position. A

4:04:17 > 4:04:22high line on the dragon Ridge and in touch at the first intermediate, and

4:04:22 > 4:04:27the second split.

4:04:27 > 4:04:34the second split. Way he goes off to the skier's right.

4:04:38 > 4:04:42the skier's right. 35.47 for Paris. Brice Roger is three tenths slower.

4:04:42 > 4:04:55Left that jump way off to the left. The next jump, tucking in, following

4:04:55 > 4:05:00from the camera high up on the course. It gives you a true idea of

4:05:00 > 4:05:06the incredible speed these downhill races travel at down the snow. 107

4:05:06 > 4:05:10kilometres there. And that's not the fastest part of the course. In the

4:05:10 > 4:05:17red zone all the way for Brice Roger. In towards the Blue Dragon

4:05:17 > 4:05:20Valley, exiting stage towards the magic tree and that's a bigger jump

4:05:20 > 4:05:26than we have seen from some. 107.4 is the latest reading on the speed

4:05:26 > 4:05:31gun. I think Paris will be safe in the gold medal position at the

4:05:31 > 4:05:43moment. His time of 1:40.79, that's what they are all chasing now.

4:05:45 > 4:05:46what they are all chasing now. Roger goes into bronze medal position for

4:05:46 > 4:05:59France. One of the big favourites, Beat Feuz from Switzerland. The best

4:05:59 > 4:06:12downhill skier of the season so far. Claimed the final downhill before

4:06:12 > 4:06:14the Olympics at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Skied pretty

4:06:14 > 4:06:20solidly in

4:06:20 > 4:06:23solidly in training, sitting up and skiing gently in the bottom half of

4:06:23 > 4:06:30his training runs, but make no mistake, a serious contender, a huge

4:06:30 > 4:06:34unit of a man. Incredible jump, slamming the inside edge of the

4:06:34 > 4:06:38right hand skied down into the snow to continue on his way. Beat Feuz

4:06:38 > 4:06:42living dangerously. The Olympic downhill, and he's bringing all the

4:06:42 > 4:06:47risks into this race.

4:06:47 > 4:06:52risks into this race. Beat Feuz is just about hanging in. Need a huge

4:06:52 > 4:07:00amount of strength to pour himself back in over his skis.

4:07:00 > 4:07:03back in over his skis. 120 kph, the latest reading for Beat Feuz as he

4:07:03 > 4:07:09flies down towards the Blue Dragon Valley.

4:07:09 > 4:07:15Valley. Paris's time... And Beat Feuz is faster. A little lopsided on

4:07:15 > 4:07:20landing as he enters the Blue Dragon Valley and sets up for the final

4:07:20 > 4:07:25quarter of the Olympic downhill course. What a flight from Beat

4:07:25 > 4:07:30Feuz. Magnificent downhill skiing from the Swiss. He is going to go

4:07:30 > 4:07:36close here. He may well go into the gold medal position. Beat Feuz has

4:07:36 > 4:07:42put down a magnificent Olympic downhill run. A huge jump to finish.

4:07:42 > 4:07:50Beat Feuz is first! 0.36. Fantastic skiing from Beat Feuz. He's into the

4:07:50 > 4:07:55gold medal position. Full of risk, he took so many chances, but he got

4:07:55 > 4:08:01the reward. Look at that, almost horizontal on the snow. How did he

4:08:01 > 4:08:16keep that ski down there? Andreas Sander will be next up for Germany.

4:08:17 > 4:08:23Along the push and skate for the German. Beat Feuz leading for

4:08:23 > 4:08:27Switzerland, Dominik Paris in second for Italy. German Thomas Dressen,

4:08:27 > 4:08:31first on the course, sitting in bronze medal position at the moment.

4:08:31 > 4:08:46We are yet to see an Austrian, or any of the Norwegians.

4:08:48 > 4:08:55Svindal, Jansrud, both threats for a medal. Andreas Sander into the

4:08:55 > 4:09:02middle part of the course. A decent line for Andreas Sander. Doesn't

4:09:02 > 4:09:07have the bulk we have seen on display from Beat Feuz. Has Andreas

4:09:07 > 4:09:13Sander managed to claw back any time? He heads down towards Blue

4:09:13 > 4:09:18Dragon Valley.

4:09:18 > 4:09:22Dragon Valley. Andreas Sander is half a second shy of the required

4:09:22 > 4:09:27mark. The tightest and narrowest part of the course, the transition

4:09:27 > 4:09:34from Blue Dragon Valley, upwards and over towards the magic tree. Luckily

4:09:34 > 4:09:38there is no breeze, because that could have been nasty if the wind

4:09:38 > 4:09:48got under the tips of those downhill skis.

4:09:50 > 4:09:55The last jump, and Andreas Sander has missed it. He is down in fifth

4:09:55 > 4:10:02position for the moment.

4:10:02 > 4:10:04position for the moment. Aksel Lund Svindal is ready to race in what

4:10:04 > 4:10:13will certainly be his final Olympic downhill. Third in final training.

4:10:13 > 4:10:17Fifth in the second to last training run.

4:10:20 > 4:10:26A decent start for the multitalented Aksel Lund Svindal. Just chucked

4:10:26 > 4:10:35slightly lower on the camber on dragon Ridge. Trailing by a tenth,

4:10:35 > 4:10:40battered and clattered the control gate. The workers go out to make the

4:10:40 > 4:10:43repair and Svindal loses his ideal racing line. Throwing everything at

4:10:43 > 4:10:49his last Olympic cup edition in downhill, but he might be pushing

4:10:49 > 4:10:53too hard, winding down the windows on that big jump. Cinderella will

4:10:53 > 4:11:03have to take the riskiest possible line. -- Swindell will have to take.

4:11:03 > 4:11:06Try to get back into contention here. What a shot of the great man

4:11:06 > 4:11:16in full flight as he lands at 111 kilometres per hour. And now

4:11:16 > 4:11:23Cinderella is in front. The gamble might be paying off for Aksel Lund

4:11:23 > 4:11:27Svindal. Blue Dragon Valley. The big flight, off-balance. Didn't seem to

4:11:27 > 4:11:34any speed. Recovers his poise and gets his dynamic posture back over

4:11:34 > 4:11:40his skis. He leads Beat Feuz by a quarter of a second. Aksel Lund

4:11:40 > 4:11:44Svindal, skiing for a gold medal position for Norway. Just one jump

4:11:44 > 4:11:51to come. It's a long flight, tucking in and going into gold. Aksel Lund

4:11:51 > 4:12:03Svindal steals the lead away from Beat Feuz. Magnificent.

4:12:07 > 4:12:10It wasn't textbook jumping, but he knew the risk might bring him the

4:12:10 > 4:12:24reward. Janssen Road of Norway, number nine. -- Janssen

4:12:24 > 4:12:30number nine. -- Janssen Jansrud of Norway.

4:12:32 > 4:12:44Norway. A little low on the dragon Ridge, but the speed is good. 111, a

4:12:44 > 4:12:49long jump, standing immediately on the inside edge of the right ski.

4:12:49 > 4:12:56Wonderful anticipation and control from the 32-year-old Norwegian. He

4:12:56 > 4:13:02is flying here. Huge again. He knows he has to roll the dice and take a

4:13:02 > 4:13:10real chance with this. Aksel Lund Svindal leads, Beat Feuz second and

4:13:10 > 4:13:17Paris that. They all watch keenly as Jansrud comes into the paradise turn

4:13:17 > 4:13:33at full pelt. 112 on the landing, travelling 38 metres.

4:13:36 > 4:13:42Goodness me, the upper body is all twisted. Like a freestyler, but he

4:13:42 > 4:13:48seemed to land cleanly enough. It's green all the way. Only just, for

4:13:48 > 4:13:53hundreds of a second between the two Norwegians. Which way will this go?

4:13:53 > 4:14:01Yannis

4:14:01 > 4:14:12Yannis -- Jansrud is second, Svindal holds on. Lost control of his left

4:14:12 > 4:14:17ski pole. No one has ever won the Olympic downhill twice in a row. Can

4:14:17 > 4:14:24Mattias Meyer rewrite the record books and win the title he won in

4:14:24 > 4:14:30Sochi four years ago. He pushes out and keeps pushing and skating. He's

4:14:30 > 4:14:42looking for that forward momentum. The reigning champion is on a

4:14:42 > 4:14:45mission as he hits the dragon Ridge and almost goes through the middle

4:14:45 > 4:14:49of the control gate at the bottom. It's a good line to bring him a

4:14:49 > 4:14:56green light. A huge flight off to his right. Stands of the left ski on

4:14:56 > 4:15:01the next turn. Can Matthias Mayer become the first man ever to win

4:15:01 > 4:15:08back-to-back downhill medals? -- gold medals. For hundreds of the

4:15:08 > 4:15:16pace of Svindal. Next, low body position, where ever he feels

4:15:16 > 4:15:21comfortable enough to tuck. Download and looking for good aerodynamic

4:15:21 > 4:15:22shape.

4:15:26 > 4:15:34Good jump again there. Standing on the right foot. Not as quick as

4:15:34 > 4:15:37Aksel Lund Svindal, and he drills the Norwegian now by three quarters

4:15:37 > 4:15:42of a second. Surely, that's too much for Matthias Mayer to claw back.

4:15:42 > 4:15:47Let's see how he takes this jump. He flew that much longer in the

4:15:47 > 4:15:56downhill leg of the Alpine combined. It's not happening for Mayer now.

4:15:56 > 4:15:591.11 seconds off the pace. The Austrians will have to look

4:15:59 > 4:16:05elsewhere. They still have Hannes Reichelt Max Franz and Vincent

4:16:05 > 4:16:13Kriechmayr to come. The champion format years ago is only seven.

4:16:13 > 4:16:16Svindal still the champion in waiting. Ninth best downhiller of

4:16:16 > 4:16:24the season. Peter Fill is not without a chance of being in the

4:16:24 > 4:16:33middle tier, pretty solid in training.

4:16:33 > 4:16:40training. He became the first Italian to win the World Cup

4:16:40 > 4:16:44downhill challenge and did so two years in a row. Peter Fill on his

4:16:44 > 4:16:49way. Dominik Paris, his team-mate, currently in fourth. Phil has had

4:16:49 > 4:16:55time to get a court report over the two-way radio, and he is off to a

4:16:55 > 4:16:59flying start, 100th of a second off the pace of Aksel Lund Svindal, who

4:16:59 > 4:17:03raced with number seven. Peter Fill is on the course with number 13. And

4:17:03 > 4:17:09he is in front at the next intermediate. He was 100th behind,

4:17:09 > 4:17:15then he is 100th in front.

4:17:16 > 4:17:21then he is 100th in front. Peter Fill pushing hard and looking for

4:17:21 > 4:17:26straight line speed, taking all sorts of gambles and, almost

4:17:26 > 4:17:33flattened the curve coming into the Paradise turn.

4:17:33 > 4:17:38Paradise turn. Now the bottom part of the track, the key split, and

4:17:38 > 4:17:44Phil is now quarter of a second removed from Svindal's time, and

4:17:44 > 4:17:51that put him outside a bronze medal position. -- Peter Fill is now

4:17:51 > 4:17:57quarter of a second... I don't think the soft snow will help in the --

4:17:57 > 4:18:01will help him. The time has got worse than he is now half a second

4:18:01 > 4:18:04off the pace, pushing him down to about fourth or fifth position. Last

4:18:04 > 4:18:12jump, Peter Fill lands and crosses the line. He has missed the medals,

4:18:12 > 4:18:27he is sixth, 0.83 the pace. Max Franz, was a bronze medallist at the

4:18:27 > 4:18:33World Championships in San Moritz last February in the World

4:18:33 > 4:18:38Championship downhill.

4:18:38 > 4:18:41Championship downhill. He heads down onto the Dragon Bridge, a high line

4:18:41 > 4:18:46for Max Franz, getting bounced around by the bumps and ruts

4:18:46 > 4:18:51underfoot, but at least they are visible. You can see clearly.

4:18:51 > 4:18:55Visibility is absolutely perfect today, not a breath of wind. We have

4:18:55 > 4:18:58the full Olympic downhill. There were fears that we may have a

4:18:58 > 4:19:06shortened run, a subdued version. But no signs of that. Max Franz is

4:19:06 > 4:19:09absolutely throwing everything, heart and soul, into this downhill

4:19:09 > 4:19:14run. Almost came a cropper there, 0.34 off the pace at the last

4:19:14 > 4:19:22intermediate. The jumping isn't too clever from Max Franz. Top three on

4:19:22 > 4:19:28the bottom left of your screen. Max Franz goes in towards the blue

4:19:28 > 4:19:33Dragon Valley, down to the magic tree. This secretary which has

4:19:33 > 4:19:39needed to be protected while they built and prepared this Olympic

4:19:39 > 4:19:48downhill track. A massive jump from Max Franz, similar to what we saw

4:19:48 > 4:19:53from Matthias Mayer in the combined stage, the downhill stage of the

4:19:53 > 4:19:58combine. Hasn't done him any damage. He's just 1.3 off the pace. Out of

4:19:58 > 4:20:03the medal chances here, Max Franz, just one more opportunity for the

4:20:03 > 4:20:11mighty Austrians, with Vincent Kriechmayr next. Too many errors for

4:20:11 > 4:20:18Max Franz. Vincent Kriechmayr from Austria. The quickest in final

4:20:18 > 4:20:24training.

4:20:24 > 4:20:28training. He can't be disregarded. He is a light, nimble but immensely

4:20:28 > 4:20:33quick downhill skier.

4:20:34 > 4:20:36quick downhill skier. Kriechmayr as a good line into the Dragon Ridge.

4:20:36 > 4:20:43Just about, moved his shoulder clear of the final gate of that section.

4:20:43 > 4:20:48The Austrian is starting to pay close attention to the big screen at

4:20:48 > 4:20:57the foot of the mountain. The next split is key. 35.73 four Svindal,

4:20:57 > 4:21:0235.794

4:21:03 > 4:21:0935.794 Kriechmayr -- 30 5.79 four Kriechmayr. He is throwing

4:21:09 > 4:21:12everything at this Olympic downhill course as he comes into the Paradise

4:21:12 > 4:21:16turn. He might have gone slightly lower than the ideal racing line. We

4:21:16 > 4:21:20will wait for the split as he comes down towards the blue Dragon Valley.

4:21:20 > 4:21:29The speed is OK. Kriechmayr is now half a second off. The Paradise turn

4:21:29 > 4:21:33took its toll on his chance for a medal. He just drifted to low after

4:21:33 > 4:21:42the right foot element. Double jump there. A hop and a skip before he

4:21:42 > 4:21:48prepares for the last element.

4:21:48 > 4:21:51prepares for the last element. He's too far removed, I think, to push

4:21:51 > 4:21:58for a medal now. It is so tight at the top, the top three separated by

4:21:58 > 4:22:02just 0.1 eight. Vincent Kriechmayr might be the best Austrian. He is

4:22:02 > 4:22:04seventh, but that is scant consolation because he is out of the

4:22:04 > 4:22:10medals. 35-year-old Aksel Lund Svindal is the Olympic downhill

4:22:10 > 4:22:17challenge. It is a Norwegian 1-2. Switzerland getting amongst the

4:22:17 > 4:22:23medals. Beat Feuz has the bronze. World Cup wins, been their review

4:22:23 > 4:22:28time to know how that feels. This is different. It is one of those things

4:22:28 > 4:22:33you keep looking up the hill because you want to make sure it's real, no

4:22:33 > 4:22:39one a skiing faster. This is fun. STUDIO: And he will get the freedom

4:22:39 > 4:22:43of Norway because not only is he the oldest guy ever to win that, it is

4:22:43 > 4:22:47no way's first victory, and the Alpine downhill for men is the only

4:22:47 > 4:22:55title they have never won. Wow!

4:22:55 > 4:22:57title they have never won. Wow!13 Olympic medals and not this one for

4:22:57 > 4:23:04Aamodt. Wets how popular a win amongst the whole Alpine fraternity,

4:23:04 > 4:23:10not just amongst the Norwegians? They love this guy.

4:23:10 > 4:23:14He has overcome so much. From here to his Achilles, he has smashed up

4:23:14 > 4:23:18every part of his body. He has had multiple surgeries and has fought

4:23:18 > 4:23:22back to the sport he loves. This is potentially his last ever Olympics,

4:23:22 > 4:23:27so to come away with his gold is amazing. He really pushed it. We

4:23:27 > 4:23:33talked about Franz Klammer's run in 1976, and he was on the tails of his

4:23:33 > 4:23:40skis, giving it all.He was not overturning on the soft snow, he was

4:23:40 > 4:23:43flattening the skis as soon as he could. The tips coming up, but

4:23:43 > 4:23:47always fighting for the aerodynamic position. It wasn't clean or

4:23:47 > 4:23:51perfect, but the winner wasn't going to be the guy who came down over

4:23:51 > 4:23:56skiing it, it was the guy who just charged and went for it. You made a

4:23:56 > 4:24:02great point that this is one of the downhill is for men that has more

4:24:02 > 4:24:08turns, but he was able to work it down, using gravity, and from this

4:24:08 > 4:24:14section, he was invincible, so fast down here, just loose, like he is

4:24:14 > 4:24:17skiing on eggshells, losing snow contact there, but not fighting what

4:24:17 > 4:24:22the skis want to do, which is to go straight downhill.Huge flight. He

4:24:22 > 4:24:26is a two-time world champion but no global medals in downhill since

4:24:26 > 4:24:312014. He missed the podium completely in all of his events in

4:24:31 > 4:24:34the last Olympics. Some people thought it was all over at that

4:24:34 > 4:24:38point.He is one of the guys on the World Cup tour who wasn't able to

4:24:38 > 4:24:46come and do a recce of the track. Jansrud, his team-mate, did that and

4:24:46 > 4:24:52they do help each other. Ironically, the one person who challenged

4:24:52 > 4:24:56Svindal today was Jansrud. He charged the halfway point and then

4:24:56 > 4:25:01Jansrud gave it to Svindal.He had half a second.On this downhill,

4:25:01 > 4:25:08that was an eternity. Then a few heavy edge sets, working against

4:25:08 > 4:25:13gravity, and you can see he just lost speed. A really good run.

4:25:13 > 4:25:19Technically, a lot cleaner in the air. He was able to land with a nice

4:25:19 > 4:25:23flat ski. That was a substantial lead, but at the end of that term,

4:25:23 > 4:25:26tipping inside with the inside shoulder, the weight transfers off

4:25:26 > 4:25:32the outside ski and it isn't able to power any more.Apart from that

4:25:32 > 4:25:38wobble, his looked the tidy run, by far, and it was slower.I have had

4:25:38 > 4:25:42runs where I got down and thought, that was amazing, turn to look at

4:25:42 > 4:25:45the scoreboard and I was dead slow. Sometimes you feel fast and you're

4:25:45 > 4:25:49just making the gates and it's messy, and that's the way to go.

4:25:49 > 4:25:53That's why full risk is the way. You have to be safe and strong enough to

4:25:53 > 4:26:02pull it but like Svindal show today, it is the limit you have to find.He

4:26:02 > 4:26:06upgraded his Sochi bronze to silver in Pyeongchang. The world champion

4:26:06 > 4:26:10gets on the podium here. For quite a long time, all of Switzerland might

4:26:10 > 4:26:16have thought that Beat Feuz had this.Me too. He was skiing well in

4:26:16 > 4:26:21training. He was standing up to not give his time away to the other

4:26:21 > 4:26:24competitors. It was quite uncharacteristic today, made a lot

4:26:24 > 4:26:27of mistakes and looked like he was trying too hard, for me. I'm picking

4:26:27 > 4:26:35it apart because he came third. It was incredible. Beat Feuz was going

4:26:35 > 4:26:38for the win today, and instead of trusting his instincts, he tried a

4:26:38 > 4:26:45little too hard. 110% goes against your speed. We mentioned some of the

4:26:45 > 4:26:53greats of the sport, Fritz Strobl, Franz Klammer and Killie, but this

4:26:53 > 4:26:56guy, Beat Feuz, one day for him, but Svindal surely fits in with those

4:26:56 > 4:27:03legends of the sport. It is entirely appropriate that he wins this one,

4:27:03 > 4:27:07surely.Someone who has overcome so much adversity and put their body on

4:27:07 > 4:27:11the line for so many years with so much talent deserves to have an

4:27:11 > 4:27:14Olympic gold. It was a gaping hole for him and now it is filled.I

4:27:14 > 4:27:18can't wait for the men's Super-G tomorrow. Speed event after speed

4:27:18 > 4:27:22event. Sometimes the weather does what in our favour. Chemmy, thank

4:27:22 > 4:27:26you. Alpine headline makers are go-go, but there are plenty of

4:27:26 > 4:27:32others across the whole Olympic programme.

4:27:32 > 4:27:35programme. Britain's Dom Parsons is in the hunt for the medal at the

4:27:35 > 4:27:40halfway stage of the men's skeleton. He's in place, three hundredths of a

4:27:40 > 4:27:44second away from bronze. The British men made it to make wins out of

4:27:44 > 4:27:50three in the round-robin stage of the Carling. Kyle Smith is ayes team

4:27:50 > 4:28:02beat Japan 6-5, a very tight one. But -- of the curling. Eve

4:28:02 > 4:28:06Muirhead's team suffered their first loss, 7-4 down against the USA.

4:28:06 > 4:28:13Mixed fortunes for Eve and women. Mikaela Shiffrin, as you saw, has

4:28:13 > 4:28:16her first gold of these games, with the American producing a superb

4:28:16 > 4:28:25second run to win the giant slalom. And 35-year-old Aksel Lund Svindal

4:28:25 > 4:28:33has become the oldest ever gold medallist in Alpine skiing. Some

4:28:33 > 4:28:38more news from today concerns IOC member Adam Pengilly, who has been

4:28:38 > 4:28:40sent home from Pyeongchang following an altercation with a security

4:28:40 > 4:28:46guard. A spokesperson said:

4:29:01 > 4:29:05He has apologised for swearing at the official but denies any physical

4:29:05 > 4:29:08altercation, insisting, at no point did I touch. The former skeleton

4:29:08 > 4:29:15slider told us, this was my mistake and I am sorry. I have spoken about

4:29:15 > 4:29:18IOC members being held to a higher standard and I have let myself and

4:29:18 > 4:29:26others down. Now, there is a magnificent grandeur to men against

4:29:26 > 4:29:29mountain in the men's downhill, but it is completely bonkers in the next

4:29:29 > 4:29:34sport we will be seen. It is of course snowboard cross. From the

4:29:34 > 4:29:38sublime to the wonderfully ridiculous, you might say. It is not

4:29:38 > 4:29:42for the faint-hearted. I like to call it the Forrest Gump of the

4:29:42 > 4:29:44events at the Winter Olympics, because you just never know what

4:29:44 > 4:29:54you're going to get.Merciless format. It is a beautiful thing.

4:29:54 > 4:30:04This is far from being over. It's going to be difficult to catch. This

4:30:04 > 4:30:08boy has so much board speed. This is very tight. The Italian has gone

4:30:08 > 4:30:18down. Wow!To talk about this, Ben Kilner has joined us, and Maisie

4:30:18 > 4:30:22Potter, who actually dares to do this event. Congratulations. Maisie,

4:30:22 > 4:30:30you were a member of the British men's snowboard cross -- of the

4:30:30 > 4:30:33British snowboard cross team, but you have hobbled up on crutches

4:30:33 > 4:30:38because you felt trying to qualify. This is the sport you love - what is

4:30:38 > 4:30:42the appeal? The unpredictability, every race and every course is

4:30:42 > 4:30:45different, so the athletes, we travel, and likely with the half

4:30:45 > 4:30:49pipe, it is similar, our courses always different, which is exciting.

4:30:49 > 4:30:55Tell me about the injury.

4:30:55 > 4:31:01I came up short on my heel bone and caught it and broke it.Is your

4:31:01 > 4:31:08season over?I think so, it's a rehab of 4-6 months.Having seen

4:31:08 > 4:31:12snowboard cross at the last three or four Olympic Games, how did you

4:31:12 > 4:31:17first get involved and what's the appeal?I really like snowboard

4:31:17 > 4:31:21cross because it brings all the aspects of snowboarding together.

4:31:21 > 4:31:26You have the jumps, the calming, and it's a head-to-head race. Its first

4:31:26 > 4:31:35across the line. It's real racing. It sure is, Ben, this made its debut

4:31:35 > 4:31:40at Turin games in 2006 at Bardonecchia and was an instant hit.

4:31:40 > 4:31:45What's the appeal? The fact there are so many crashes in the sport, I

4:31:45 > 4:31:49think it brought it to everyone's attention. It's absolute carnage. At

4:31:49 > 4:31:57times. But they go so fast down this course, to go over these jumps at

4:31:57 > 4:32:04the speed they do, it takes remarkable talent. It's a great

4:32:04 > 4:32:08spectacle.Apart from the injuries, what's the hardest thing to handle

4:32:08 > 4:32:14about the sport?That's a good question. I would say adapting

4:32:14 > 4:32:17quickly, which is where the experience comes into play. The more

4:32:17 > 4:32:21courses you have ridden, the more they reappear again, so you learn to

4:32:21 > 4:32:26adapt quicker to that particular course.Anybody who skis and

4:32:26 > 4:32:29snowboards is used to concentrating on their own game, as it were. You

4:32:29 > 4:32:33have to find your way down the course, but at any point somebody

4:32:33 > 4:32:38could cross your mind or bump you. That's the brutal aspect of the

4:32:38 > 4:32:42sport, things can be out of your control and you can lose your place

4:32:42 > 4:32:47in the final. It's definitely emotional sometimes.Amazingly,

4:32:47 > 4:32:50given the heron scaring nature of the racing, there has been

4:32:50 > 4:32:55remarkable

4:32:56 > 4:33:02remarkable consistency to the Olympics so far.

4:33:02 > 4:33:04Seth Wescott for America winning and 2006 and 2010.

4:33:04 > 4:33:07And now Frenchman Pierre Vaultier is back again trying to defend

4:33:07 > 4:33:09the title he won in Sochi.

4:33:09 > 4:33:10But, in this sport, nothing's a done deal.

4:33:10 > 4:33:12We recommend that you do not look away.

4:33:12 > 4:33:16Tim Warwood and Ed Leigh in the commentary box.

4:33:16 > 4:33:23COMMENTATOR: Pierre Vaultier, Kevin Hill, red and green, but Jarryd

4:33:23 > 4:33:27Hughes is closest to the camera.I was going to say, keep your eye on

4:33:27 > 4:33:34the Australian closest to the camera there. In the black bib on the

4:33:34 > 4:33:40right-hand side of the screen. It was a long one. It's between one and

4:33:40 > 4:33:44four seconds that they can leave the gate. It's a random opening. Jarryd

4:33:44 > 4:33:55Hughes, what a start from the white bib of the Austrian. He is lowest

4:33:55 > 4:34:03seed, 24th, but he is very quick with the Olympic champion reeling

4:34:03 > 4:34:07him in. They are jostling for position trying to close the door on

4:34:07 > 4:34:17each other. Nothing too tight yet. They are coming into this

4:34:18 > 4:34:22They are coming into this huge booter with Pierre Vaultier with a

4:34:22 > 4:34:26beautiful jump to go ahead of the family. Jarryd Hughes jostling for

4:34:26 > 4:34:30third place on the inside, desperately wants that from Markus

4:34:30 > 4:34:35Schairer.The Austrian in the yellow bib will not let it go easily.

4:34:35 > 4:34:40Jarryd Hughes knuckled that one. Pierre Vaultier has enough distance

4:34:40 > 4:34:45to make sure he doesn't get dragged down by the others. A brilliant

4:34:45 > 4:34:55race. Oh, oh! Bat was huge. An enormous crash there. Pierre

4:34:55 > 4:35:02Vaultier first, Jarryd Hughes in second and Haemmerle in third. But

4:35:02 > 4:35:08the blue bib has pulled up straightaway. Pierre Vaultier

4:35:08 > 4:35:15looking majestic, bossing this heat. The back protector will have done

4:35:15 > 4:35:23its job there, that's for sure. Let's hope so. We go back to the

4:35:23 > 4:35:29top, Nikolay Olyunin. And the precocious young Frenchman, Merlin

4:35:29 > 4:35:32circuit, living up to the hype bestowed upon him by some of the

4:35:32 > 4:35:38greats of snowboard cross. Cameron Bolton and Alex Pullin, the two

4:35:38 > 4:35:43Australians both there in blue and yellow. Michele Godino in the black

4:35:43 > 4:35:48bib.

4:35:54 > 4:36:02That's the gate, and they are in. Nikolay Olyunin is out in front,

4:36:02 > 4:36:13even though Merlin Surget get was good. Merlin circuit just

4:36:17 > 4:36:20good. Merlin circuit just behind Bolton as they going to the front.

4:36:20 > 4:36:24All fit into the back as we get first and second with a tiny bit of

4:36:24 > 4:36:34daylight. Merlin Surget going low on his heels. He will not let this one

4:36:34 > 4:36:37slip I don't think.Lovely work from Alex Pullin squashing the job.

4:36:37 > 4:36:43Nikolay Olyunin opening to the tight left-hander. More than 90 degrees

4:36:43 > 4:36:48round that corner.Cameron Bolton going from second to fifth in a

4:36:48 > 4:36:59heartbeat. Keep your eye on the blue bib of Cam Bolton. We have seen

4:36:59 > 4:37:05people pass here, so there is a battle for third. He's gone! He's

4:37:05 > 4:37:12gone down really hard. The two Australians make it through behind

4:37:12 > 4:37:16the Russian. Nikolay Olyunin in first, Alex Pullin second, Cam

4:37:16 > 4:37:26Bolton third.

4:37:26 > 4:37:29Bolton third. And Michele Godino went down very hard. That jump, we

4:37:29 > 4:37:33have seen a lot of people struggle with it. At this point in the race

4:37:33 > 4:37:37your adrenaline is peaking, you are on the limit, and you are so buzzed

4:37:37 > 4:37:45up that you just want to get in that top three. .The top three advanced

4:37:45 > 4:37:54to the semifinals. I do

4:37:56 > 4:38:03to the semifinals. I do like Mick Dierdorff's style, keep an eye on

4:38:03 > 4:38:10him closest to us.

4:38:10 > 4:38:16him closest to us. I'm going to go with the green bib of Hagan Kinney

4:38:16 > 4:38:25and the yellow booter of Paul Berg. And maybe Dierdorff in the white.

4:38:25 > 4:38:29I'm pinning my tail on Mick Dierdorff's donkey! That doesn't

4:38:29 > 4:38:39even make sense. The riders are ready, watch the gate. They are

4:38:39 > 4:38:45gone, with Dierdorff closest to the camera, going out very well. But the

4:38:45 > 4:38:55Canadian Christopher Robanske is out in front. Regino Hernandez as well.

4:38:55 > 4:38:58He's flying out in front in his silver helmet. Dierdorff, by

4:38:58 > 4:39:05Christopher Robanske. It's a huge jump, and four of them are down.

4:39:05 > 4:39:09There is going to be an incredible race for third now. Hopefully the

4:39:09 > 4:39:16director lets go of Regino Hernandez and Mick Dierdorff out in front,

4:39:16 > 4:39:20because the drama is unfolding behind them in the battle for third.

4:39:20 > 4:39:25It's all about qualifying in the top three positions, advancing through,

4:39:25 > 4:39:30get in the top three to get through to the next round. At some point

4:39:30 > 4:39:33Dierdorff will glance behind him and see there is nothing there and

4:39:33 > 4:39:37hopefully take his foot off the gas, because if these two start to really

4:39:37 > 4:39:44push then they will be in danger of knocking themselves out.

4:39:46 > 4:39:48knocking themselves out.The captain takes the win. Regino Hernandez.He

4:39:48 > 4:39:56really popped off that.Really composed.Ethic in third is the blue

4:39:56 > 4:40:00bib of Christopher Robanske.The Canadian will go through. I would

4:40:00 > 4:40:05like to see that again, because there was a crash at the back I

4:40:05 > 4:40:11think Hagen Kearney might have fallen off his own accord, catching

4:40:11 > 4:40:21his heel edge.Spots in the finals for the three. Who will join them?

4:40:21 > 4:40:24The fourth and final of the quarters will tell us as we go back to the

4:40:24 > 4:40:30top. Martin

4:40:30 > 4:40:37top. Martin Noerl, Baumgartner, Perathoner,. It has to be blue and

4:40:37 > 4:40:46yellow for me, Baumgartner and Emanuel Perathoner.

4:40:46 > 4:40:49Emanuel Perathoner. And the best thing to do is fly under the radar,

4:40:49 > 4:41:00don't be anyone's threat stop the green bib of Ken Vuagnoux, keep an

4:41:00 > 4:41:05eye on him.

4:41:06 > 4:41:08eye on him. Martin Noerl doing really well. And Baumgartner in

4:41:08 > 4:41:19second with the orange goggles. Brilliantly squashed going to the

4:41:19 > 4:41:24second knuckle, Perrott owner. Very tight in the first three here. --

4:41:24 > 4:41:29Emanuel Perathoner. Emanuel Perathoner coming up the inside and

4:41:29 > 4:41:38they are inches apart.Baumgartner in the blue has all the work to do.

4:41:38 > 4:41:46Brilliant speed.Baumgartner has sized through them. And the white

4:41:46 > 4:41:55booter of Anton Lindfors of Switzerland. -- the white bib.

4:41:55 > 4:41:59Baumgartner has gone big with the board is coming together between

4:41:59 > 4:42:14Emanuel Perathoner and Baumgartner. Anton Lindfors of Finland, so close.

4:42:14 > 4:42:21I think it was Lindfors and Baumgartner.Brilliant racing.The

4:42:21 > 4:42:25last four jobs where everything we hoped they would be. Brilliant,

4:42:25 > 4:42:31brilliant racing. Martin Noerl lead for so long, taking control of the

4:42:31 > 4:42:36race. It was so close.Wow, Lindfors jumping over the front of the

4:42:36 > 4:42:41Italian. Emanuel Perathoner couldn't do anything about it. Good clean

4:42:41 > 4:42:45racing from all of them.Brilliant racing. This is why we love boarder

4:42:45 > 4:42:47cross.

4:42:51 > 4:42:56Pierre Vaultier is the defending Olympic champion. The five-time

4:42:56 > 4:42:59overall World Cup winner and reigning world champion is in there.

4:42:59 > 4:43:04Nikolay Olyunin, the Russian has looked invincible so far. The two

4:43:04 > 4:43:08Australians, Cameron Bolton and Alex Pullin, Austrian Haemmerle and then

4:43:08 > 4:43:16Jarryd Hughes. Hughes is closest to us. Pierre Vaultier was like

4:43:16 > 4:43:19lightning out of the gates as they free fall into the first feature,

4:43:19 > 4:43:25the bird bath.Pierre Vaultier out in the lead. Look how he is

4:43:25 > 4:43:31extending it.Aleksandar Haemmerle in the white bib and then Jarryd

4:43:31 > 4:43:37Hughes in third. But it's about to start moving, pulling in the yellow

4:43:37 > 4:43:44bib. Pierre Vaultier looking comfortable, moving into the

4:43:44 > 4:43:49slipstream.The two Australians move in together. Alex Pullin and Bolton.

4:43:49 > 4:43:55Jarryd Hughes in second position. Keep an eye on Aleksandar Haemmerle

4:43:55 > 4:44:00in the white bib. Going hard and low on the outside. Bolton pulling and

4:44:00 > 4:44:06looking to go long. What a fantastic race. Jarryd Hughes leading as

4:44:06 > 4:44:11Pierre Vaultier tries to hold him. Pierre Vaultier is down! Aleksandar

4:44:11 > 4:44:17Haemmerle as well.We have the two Australians, Alex Pullin and Jarryd

4:44:17 > 4:44:21Hughes. These two have beef but they will make it through and it's a yard

4:44:21 > 4:44:25sale for third place with everyone else going down. I think the Olympic

4:44:25 > 4:44:28champion went down of his own accord. I don't think there was any

4:44:28 > 4:44:34kind of coming together. I can't see from here, but I think it's Pierre

4:44:34 > 4:44:39Vaultier who is up. It is!It is Pierre Vaultier, the Olympic

4:44:39 > 4:44:44champion, playing his get out of jail free card. We saw Haemmerle go

4:44:44 > 4:44:48down and hit the outside of the net. I think it was him who took out the

4:44:48 > 4:44:53Russian, Nikolay Olyunin. Pierre Vaultier is more than 20 seconds

4:44:53 > 4:44:57behind but he's not against the clock. And look at the body language

4:44:57 > 4:45:04between these two. Pierre Vaultier loses the leads to Jarryd Hughes.

4:45:04 > 4:45:11And Haemmerle on the outside... It is over jumped by Nikolay Olyunin.

4:45:11 > 4:45:15Nikolay Olyunin tries to go around the top and as Pierre Vaultier came,

4:45:15 > 4:45:21his tale took out the front of Nikolay Olyunin's board.Did you see

4:45:21 > 4:45:25Alex Pullin had to ride through Pierre Vaultier. It was like NASCAR

4:45:25 > 4:45:30racing. He was holding his line while Pierre Vaultier, he knows of

4:45:30 > 4:45:36Pierre Vaultier's board was spinning around his leg. He has had to hop up

4:45:36 > 4:45:40and strap back in. Pierre Vaultier pretty confident he has made it down

4:45:40 > 4:45:46in third. No photo finish for his finals qualification. But it doesn't

4:45:46 > 4:45:54matter. These three will have the opportunity to battle it out for

4:45:54 > 4:45:56medals in the men's snowboard cross finals.

4:46:04 > 4:46:11Gametime. The adrenaline kicks in. Christopher Robanske E, Anton

4:46:11 > 4:46:16Lindfors

4:46:17 > 4:46:25Lindfors in white, -- Christopher Robanske. It was another long wait.

4:46:25 > 4:46:30Anton Lindfors drops out of the sky closest to us. Regina Hernandez in

4:46:30 > 4:46:40the red bib.He is gone. Christopher Robanske.

4:46:40 > 4:46:43Robanske. Baumgartner. The two North Americans chasing down with the

4:46:43 > 4:46:49Spaniard. But look how wide Robanske has gone. It is a great move from

4:46:49 > 4:46:52Baumgartner, underneath Hernandez, as they go down that enormous step

4:46:52 > 4:46:59down and into the big, sweeping right-hander.Baumgartner, the

4:46:59 > 4:47:08champion, leading. The blue bib of Robanske... And we have lost

4:47:08 > 4:47:17someone.I think it was the white bib of Anton Lindfors. Oh, no!

4:47:17 > 4:47:24Lindfors clips Robanske, as they came through. Dominoes, just taking

4:47:24 > 4:47:29each other out there. There is no sign of anyone behind him. There has

4:47:29 > 4:47:33been more drama for second and third. All of a sudden, we are not

4:47:33 > 4:47:41looking at the camera angle. Where is Baumgartner?I have just seen him

4:47:41 > 4:47:49raise his hands into the air for second place. What on earth happened

4:47:49 > 4:47:55there?Goodness only knows. The director has lost everyone, they are

4:47:55 > 4:48:07so spaced out. I can see the place out of the window. It is the black

4:48:09 > 4:48:19Cape of Mick Dierdorff.As we have said -- the black bib.That race

4:48:19 > 4:48:22will also be under review by the jury he had to try to figure out

4:48:22 > 4:48:32exactly what went on. We lost it here in the commentary booth.

4:48:32 > 4:48:34here in the commentary booth. That was Mick Dierdorff that went down

4:48:34 > 4:48:47there.He has come from last place. And Robanske...He takes down the

4:48:47 > 4:48:52German.

4:48:55 > 4:49:02German. Christopher Robanske takes out Martineau. They were carrying

4:49:02 > 4:49:20way too much speed. -- Martin knurled...

4:49:20 > 4:49:24knurled... Regina -- regina Hernandez makes the final, as does

4:49:24 > 4:49:30Baumgartner and Mick Dierdorff. A fantastic view from the helicopter

4:49:30 > 4:49:37appear of this spectacular course. Back up to the top. Six men, three

4:49:37 > 4:49:42medals, who will take it?I am looking forward to this. This will

4:49:42 > 4:49:51have plenty of action, like a higher price clothing sale. Jarryd Hughes

4:49:51 > 4:49:58in the white.Mick Dierdorff in the black.

4:49:58 > 4:50:01black.There he is, the Olympic champion, in the red, Pierre

4:50:01 > 4:50:08Vaultier.So slick, so fast, so quick on the start. And so is this

4:50:08 > 4:50:17man, regina Hernandez. He has been breathtaking out of the gate. --

4:50:17 > 4:50:23regina

4:50:23 > 4:50:29regina Hernandez Nick Baumgartner is ready for this. On the outside, the

4:50:29 > 4:50:38man who has raced so well this season, Alex pulling, also

4:50:38 > 4:50:44season, Alex pulling, also known as Cumpy. Listen to the noise. -- Alex

4:50:44 > 4:50:49pulling.

4:50:52 > 4:50:56pulling. Jarrod in the close is lying to us.Hernandez getting out

4:50:56 > 4:51:05well, Pullin getting out well. Vaultier get out into the lead.

4:51:05 > 4:51:10There is daylight between him and Jarrod use.Baumgartner is out on

4:51:10 > 4:51:18the outside making up some places. Jarrod use Thaksin behind Vaultier,

4:51:18 > 4:51:26trying to get some slipstream. Pullin is enforced as Hernandez goes

4:51:26 > 4:51:31massive.Three men down. It is a question of who is taking which

4:51:31 > 4:51:36colour of medal. Pierre Vaultier is out in front, Jarryd Hughes goes

4:51:36 > 4:51:46high, Hernandez, through the home straight, through the whale tail.

4:51:46 > 4:51:50Can Jarrod use defender silver medal position? This is going to go to a

4:51:50 > 4:51:58photo finish. They will hit the jump at the same time the bottom. It is

4:51:58 > 4:52:04formation flying. Pierre Vaultier makes it two gold medals in a row,

4:52:04 > 4:52:10back-to-back, Sochi and Korea. He was breathtaking. No one can hold a

4:52:10 > 4:52:15candle to the Frenchman. Let's take a look back at his action. What a

4:52:15 > 4:52:23great race. Vaultier led from the start. So much on that jump. We have

4:52:23 > 4:52:28seen a lot of people come down there. Pullin was in fourth

4:52:28 > 4:52:35position. He went down. The two Americans got up so quick. And it is

4:52:35 > 4:52:39a great race down the finishing straight between Hernandez and

4:52:39 > 4:52:45Hughes. Ultimately, the Australian prevailed.What a race! Smiles all

4:52:45 > 4:52:55round. Double Olympic champion there, Pierre Vaultier. Official

4:52:55 > 4:53:01results are in, and they look like that. Alex pulling did not finish.

4:53:01 > 4:53:13-- Alex Pullin. Hernandez in bronze. Jarrod use, silver, and a gold medal

4:53:13 > 4:53:17goes to Pierre Vaultier.STUDIO: And Vaultier becomes the second Olympic

4:53:17 > 4:53:20champion to successfully defend the title in four editions of this one,

4:53:20 > 4:53:24all the more remarkable when it is such an unpredictable sport. Maisie,

4:53:24 > 4:53:35what was your impression of what was an is amazing final.Plenty of

4:53:35 > 4:53:38crashes which I am sure everyone will want to see. The final was

4:53:38 > 4:53:44quite clean. The first three raced really well.Speaking of crashing,

4:53:44 > 4:53:47Pierre Vaultier was involved in one in the semifinal. It was confusing

4:53:47 > 4:53:52but he had to get up and get to the bottom in order to secure his place

4:53:52 > 4:53:56in the final. He got out in front in the final, which is almost a safe

4:53:56 > 4:54:05place to be. You want to get away from the crowd as much as you can.

4:54:05 > 4:54:10Pierre has had a history of injuries. I think he broke his back,

4:54:10 > 4:54:18and he had a recent injury in 2014. The last Olympics, he raced without

4:54:18 > 4:54:26an ACL.Could this be! There was one broken bone that we know of. Nikolay

4:54:26 > 4:54:29Olyunin, the silver medallist in Sochi, we have heard he broke his

4:54:29 > 4:54:37leg. You are a tough lot!I guess so!Tell me what you thought of the

4:54:37 > 4:54:40course itself. It was a big course they had to race. What were the

4:54:40 > 4:54:46components that will have taken them by surprise?I guess, the whole

4:54:46 > 4:54:51course was big. There was no easy section. You had to be on the whole

4:54:51 > 4:54:57time, be really big movements on those jumps. There is a lot of kick

4:54:57 > 4:55:03in them, as you can see. The start section was impressive, with a three

4:55:03 > 4:55:07metre drop.A big drop. You have to hit everything at top speed here,

4:55:07 > 4:55:12then, don't you?Yes, even in training, when the guys are going

4:55:12 > 4:55:16down the course of the full-time at full speed, they have to fully

4:55:16 > 4:55:18commit to it right from the start, and I think you were saying earlier

4:55:18 > 4:55:24that some of the women have not yet completed the course in training.

4:55:24 > 4:55:29Some of the girls have been struggling a little bit, but just

4:55:29 > 4:55:34because it's the Olympics. It's obviously a lot bigger, but we have

4:55:34 > 4:55:39had a couple more training days for that reason. What gives this guy

4:55:39 > 4:55:43Vaultier the charmed life in this sport, and consistency, when all

4:55:43 > 4:55:49around him, every sporting chaos? Is he the one?He has good board

4:55:49 > 4:55:54control. His technique is perfect. When he gets into traffic, he does

4:55:54 > 4:56:00seem to just get through it. It does not faze him too much.Ben, you are

4:56:00 > 4:56:05a half pipe specialist to try, but have you had a go?I did it in the

4:56:05 > 4:56:14youth Olympics a long time ago. That was my last time.

4:56:14 > 4:56:18was my last time. I thought it was not from me and that I would've

4:56:18 > 4:56:24backed -- that I would go back to half pipe.Tomorrow, we're looking

4:56:24 > 4:56:30forward to seeing

4:56:31 > 4:56:32forward to seeing Zoe Lee Gillings-Brier in her fourth games.

4:56:32 > 4:56:43There is a feeling that

4:56:43 > 4:56:44There is a feeling that Lindsay Jacobellis can make amends this

4:56:44 > 4:56:49time. Is it possible? She is one of the ones to watch. She has been

4:56:49 > 4:56:54hunting that gold for long enough now. It would be great if she could

4:56:54 > 4:56:57finish a career with that goal. We have some other girls who are very

4:56:57 > 4:57:01dominant. One from Italy who has been strong in the last World Cup,

4:57:01 > 4:57:09back-to-back wins, and confident going into these games. The

4:57:10 > 4:57:13going into these games. The Olympic and world champion as well.We have

4:57:13 > 4:57:16seen defending champions come back and are somehow able to produce

4:57:16 > 4:57:22their best once again. Either Sam Kovar, for those who don't know how,

4:57:22 > 4:57:27what would be the characteristics by which she separates herself from the

4:57:27 > 4:57:31other riders? She is very strong, and I would say the bottom section

4:57:31 > 4:57:39is her strength. Like Pierre, she stays flat on her board.Looking

4:57:39 > 4:57:43forward to it. Maisie, thanks very much indeed. A good day for France,

4:57:43 > 4:57:50and also for both Norway and for Germany, because they have now

4:57:50 > 4:57:53surpassed their total of eight gold medals at the last games and they

4:57:53 > 4:57:58are on their way, perhaps, to a record equalling 12. Well played to

4:57:58 > 4:58:08Germany, giving very well at the top. Today at the

4:58:08 > 4:58:14top. Today at the Games, live at 7pm. At APN, Winter Olympics Extra.

4:58:14 > 4:58:22We have the women's slalom and amends Super-G.

4:58:22 > 4:58:30amends Super-G. -- APM. We will see you for more, and the best is yet to

4:58:30 > 4:58:38come, I expect. That's all for now. Goodbye. COMMENTATOR:Jacobellis is

4:58:38 > 4:58:46down!Oh my goodness! Talk about saving the best till last. The

4:58:46 > 4:58:52gamble may be paying for Aksel Lund Svindal. Lightning quick.Mikaela

4:58:52 > 4:58:58Shiffrin!Musgrave announces his arrival at the top of the sport.

4:58:58 > 4:59:00What a finish that was! Theresa come on,
