0:00:40 > 0:00:45Welcome back to the coverage of the first full day of competition of the
0:00:45 > 0:00:49Winter Olympics, 2018. The scene in Pyeongchang, where every venue has
0:00:49 > 0:00:54been lit up. It is sensational, the crowds that have been at the short
0:00:54 > 0:00:59track and the long track speed skating, crowds have gathered for
0:00:59 > 0:01:03the ski jumping, we will be showing you that. Action in the luge, the
0:01:03 > 0:01:10headlines are that the host nation South
0:01:11 > 0:01:16South Korea have won their first gold medal, the 1500 metres in the
0:01:16 > 0:01:20men's short speed skating. We have our guests in the studio, huge
0:01:20 > 0:01:26relief and delight that Elise Christie is safely through her
0:01:26 > 0:01:29qualification for the 500 metres speed skating?We can all breathe a
0:01:29 > 0:01:33sigh of relief! She has dusted off the cobwebs, smashing her first
0:01:33 > 0:01:37race, she looks really relaxed and happy. She set a fast time, an
0:01:37 > 0:01:42Olympic record at the time, she was overtaken but she will be second
0:01:42 > 0:01:47fastest going into the quarterfinals on Tuesday.Yes, in all-important
0:01:47 > 0:01:52lane one, it gives her a clean start, she can get in front. Leading
0:01:52 > 0:01:55from start to finish. She told us how nervous she felt in her
0:01:55 > 0:01:58interview afterwards can sometimes it's getting going, that's what you
0:01:58 > 0:02:04want to do.You need that first day, the first moment on ice done and
0:02:04 > 0:02:09dusted. Then, it's a sigh of relief, you can concentrate and feel calm.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13You could see it in her face. It was good to see. Those nerves, that you
0:02:13 > 0:02:18are at the Olympic Games, it plays on the minds of a dot of athletes.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22This is her third Olympics now, but when you have been you don't know
0:02:22 > 0:02:26what it is like to be at an Olympics. The extra nerves playing
0:02:26 > 0:02:30on you, your legs are extra shaky, you haven't quite got it.I'm sure
0:02:30 > 0:02:35that having the first day, the first moment on ice, now she's a happy
0:02:35 > 0:02:41girl.And it is a normal competition, you race against the
0:02:41 > 0:02:46same people... But it isn't really! And she's done such a good job by
0:02:46 > 0:02:49saying she had redemption, she wants to do this for friends and family
0:02:49 > 0:02:53but that in itself is pressure if you want to do it for other people.
0:02:53 > 0:02:57Let's give you an idea of the timing of events over the next few hours
0:02:57 > 0:03:01here on BBC One... We will be catching up with the action from the
0:03:01 > 0:03:01second
0:03:01 > 0:03:05catching up with the action from the second run of the men's luge. Then
0:03:05 > 0:03:11the ski jumping. They call it "The normal hill" but it is big enough!
0:03:11 > 0:03:17Men's snowboarding was happening earlier on this morning.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21Then, as a unified team, career taking to the ice against
0:03:21 > 0:03:28Switzerland. -- Korea. That is live now on the red button, if you would
0:03:28 > 0:03:30like.
0:03:38 > 0:03:43Do the skeleton athletes, Laura Deas and Lizzy Yarnold, is there anything
0:03:43 > 0:03:49they can learn from watching the luge, for the skeleton? Not really,
0:03:49 > 0:03:52it is the same track but you go round the corners slightly
0:03:52 > 0:03:55differently. Bobsleigh drivers may try and take a different line, the
0:03:55 > 0:03:59bobsleigh is a lot bigger and heavier, trying to get those angles.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03To be fair they are probably doing something completely different in
0:04:03 > 0:04:08the gym. You have to concentrate on you and your racer, you do the same
0:04:08 > 0:04:11things, having your mealtimes, and doing your training sessions but you
0:04:11 > 0:04:17need to fit in your sliding times and training times. You will always
0:04:17 > 0:04:20watch your own sports, training times they will be looking at
0:04:20 > 0:04:26others, taking videos and looking at exits and entrances.Do they look at
0:04:26 > 0:04:34other people's kit. If you see something...It is so secretive. You
0:04:34 > 0:04:38have a massive rule book. Exactly like Formula 1, they are all pretty
0:04:38 > 0:04:41much the same but it is a millimetre of difference here and there that
0:04:41 > 0:04:45can make them a different speed. The runners are covered on a training
0:04:45 > 0:04:50day, covered up and then they whip off the runner covers, and off you
0:04:50 > 0:04:54go. On race day you cannot get close. It is very secret, nobody is
0:04:54 > 0:04:59allowed to touch the slides when they are in parc ferme May, it is
0:04:59 > 0:05:05strict as to when you are allowed near the sled or not. It's
0:05:05 > 0:05:10strict as to when you are allowed near the sled or not. It's the first
0:05:10 > 0:05:18day of the men's kludge. Felix Loch and Ludwick not far behind the
0:05:18 > 0:05:24leader... David Gleirscher. Let's pick up with Ron two with John Hunt
0:05:24 > 0:05:29and John Jackson...
0:05:29 > 0:05:34COMMENTATOR: Here is our leader, David Gleirscher. We were talking
0:05:34 > 0:05:39about his excellent training routines. His first run beyond his
0:05:39 > 0:05:44wildest dreams. He is leading into round two. Can he now back it up
0:05:44 > 0:05:56with another flying run? 47.652, his time to lead after his first run. We
0:05:56 > 0:06:01will hear the word "Consistency" all through the week. Throughout all of
0:06:01 > 0:06:09the disciplines. Gleirscher has to prove that he can do it again.Yes,
0:06:09 > 0:06:15I have mentioned about the consistency and how exit two and
0:06:15 > 0:06:18exit nine is key, a little early on to the corner there, coming through
0:06:18 > 0:06:25to seven. As the corner begins to drop away, this is the key point
0:06:25 > 0:06:30here. That is a great line. He is going to start pulling away from the
0:06:30 > 0:06:34guy in front. A big mistake. This isn't about the guy who has gone
0:06:34 > 0:06:38down but staying in front of Felix Loch and the other guys, as he comes
0:06:38 > 0:06:48up to the finish line.Around they come to the line, it seemed
0:06:48 > 0:06:54Gleirscher was smooth. Slower than the first run. Two tenths of a
0:06:54 > 0:07:02second slower. That opens up the door for Felix Loch and others.Yes,
0:07:02 > 0:07:06the track is now harder, it has had a lot of action where they have been
0:07:06 > 0:07:10scraping the top of the ice off, and crashing into it. This little
0:07:10 > 0:07:16mistake will not have helped him. But it wasn't such a bad run. The
0:07:16 > 0:07:21speed is still there in the sled. Hopefully, as we see, the next
0:07:21 > 0:07:28couple of fast guys come down. Whether that is the norm, those two
0:07:28 > 0:07:36tenths, whether it has cost him.And here, representing the Olympic
0:07:36 > 0:07:43athletes of Russia, Roman Repilov, a really good first run. Just what we
0:07:43 > 0:07:47were expecting from him, putting him into fourth place. He needs to
0:07:47 > 0:07:53consolidate that. Can he get closer to Gleirscher, and apply pressure on
0:07:53 > 0:07:58the great Felix Loch, coming after him?Is a great opportunity for for
0:07:58 > 0:08:03this young man to stamp his name in the Olympic history books. He needs
0:08:03 > 0:08:06a good and consistent run, we have seen that he is quick in training
0:08:06 > 0:08:13throughout the week. He can put on a good run here. Going down the track,
0:08:13 > 0:08:16into seven. Coming into the big drop in Corner eight, exonerating again.
0:08:16 > 0:08:25This is key. Can he stay in the medals? He will put pressure on the
0:08:25 > 0:08:28leading Austrian. Making his way down the track, towards the speed
0:08:28 > 0:08:36trap.This is exciting. He has closed the gap on Gleirscher but it
0:08:36 > 0:08:40terrible mistake there! Around to the finish, you lost some ground. I
0:08:40 > 0:08:48felt sure that he would take the lead. How did it unravel so late?He
0:08:48 > 0:08:51came out of 15 a little too bar round, he drove himself into the
0:08:51 > 0:08:57wall. That's all it was. It cost him. You can see the light turns
0:08:57 > 0:09:03green, meaning he was in front. The 28, 29 hundredths that he is behind
0:09:03 > 0:09:09is because of the tap on the wall. It has cost him the lead but it
0:09:09 > 0:09:14shows how dangerous this guy is. But could happen on the last run? Could
0:09:14 > 0:09:18it cost an Olympic gold medal? Something like that you will not see
0:09:18 > 0:09:23from Felix Loch, I am sure. You can see the crowd are getting into the
0:09:23 > 0:09:28rhythm of things but here is the great man himself, Felix Loch.Yes
0:09:28 > 0:09:39indeed. Bidding for his third straight gold medal. He has
0:09:40 > 0:09:43Gleirscher and Repilov in his sights. Let's see, if ever you could
0:09:43 > 0:09:49put your money on someone to deliver... In the white heat of
0:09:49 > 0:09:54competition. It is this German, he is still only 28 years old. 20 when
0:09:54 > 0:10:00he won his first gold.A great start. You can see those lines are
0:10:00 > 0:10:07smooth. Less than the blink of an eye in it. He did it on the first
0:10:07 > 0:10:11run. In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, the light has gone
0:10:11 > 0:10:16green. He is in front. Pulling away, that was inch perfect. Could not
0:10:16 > 0:10:21have been any closer to the wall. Just sliding around on the corners
0:10:21 > 0:10:25on some of those exits but he still pulls away. It is obviously working
0:10:25 > 0:10:31for him, with that setup that he has. That mistake had just happened
0:10:31 > 0:10:37from the athlete prior to him. It is a big margin. Stamping his authority
0:10:37 > 0:10:44on this Olympics. What a big run, to come from behind. Now, at the end of
0:10:44 > 0:10:49run two, Felix Loch put himself nearly two tenths of a second ahead
0:10:49 > 0:10:55of the leader on run one, David Gleirscher. That is all about
0:10:55 > 0:11:00applying pressure. Two down for Felix Loch, and the defending
0:11:00 > 0:11:04Olympic champion is in a wonderful position now.It is like on the
0:11:04 > 0:11:08first run he said, I'll take it easy on you guys, you got a chance, lull
0:11:08 > 0:11:12them into that false sense of security and then open up on the
0:11:12 > 0:11:23second run, show his authority. You can hear the American athlete, that
0:11:23 > 0:11:34he is on his way before you see him. There is a lot of support here for
0:11:34 > 0:11:47Chris Mazdzer. He is fit after his first run.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51first run.He will have seen a couple of the guys putting in fast
0:11:51 > 0:11:56runs. It is whether he is concentrating on them or on the
0:11:56 > 0:12:00track. At the end of the day you cannot control what these athletes
0:12:00 > 0:12:04are doing. It is you against the track. That is what he needs to
0:12:04 > 0:12:14focus on. It is definitely something with the American sledge. That was
0:12:14 > 0:12:19inch perfect!Really good, this. This was the run that he needs to
0:12:19 > 0:12:26put down, to get in contention. He will potentially put himself into a
0:12:26 > 0:12:30medal position with this run. It is really close. He is doing really
0:12:30 > 0:12:37well to keep himself in. He inches
0:12:43 > 0:12:49ahead of Fischnaller. Absolutely superb. Edging into fourth place,
0:12:49 > 0:12:54101,000th of the bronze medal. Fabulous from the American. He will
0:12:54 > 0:13:06be delighted. What would he be like if he misses out on a bronze medal
0:13:06 > 0:13:09by one thousandth of a second. To miss out on a medal by that much,
0:13:09 > 0:13:15that would be heartbreaking. And in context, he was 30th in Vancouver
0:13:15 > 0:13:21and 30th in Sochi. To put himself now in fourth position, nobody will
0:13:21 > 0:13:29go past him for that. But it is Rupert Staudinger next, in his first
0:13:29 > 0:13:35run he had a disaster at the very start. Clap your hands. He taps the
0:13:35 > 0:13:39ice. As if to say, come on, Rupert. You know that you are better than
0:13:39 > 0:13:48that... I hope he has a really good run here. Explosive start, then
0:13:48 > 0:13:54relax. That is the idea. That's a much better start, getting through
0:13:54 > 0:14:01there clean. Let's see what Rupert can do, with the lines that we know
0:14:01 > 0:14:05he can drive. A small slide off the corner there bet it's a much better
0:14:05 > 0:14:11start than he had. It's a more mature reflection. If he can get
0:14:11 > 0:14:15through and show what he can do. I spoke earlier about how perhaps they
0:14:15 > 0:14:21chose the wrong run a site but sometimes these smaller nations,
0:14:21 > 0:14:25they do not have a lot of equipment. They only have one set of runners
0:14:25 > 0:14:29but it either works in these conditions or not. He gets a little
0:14:29 > 0:14:34behind the sledge, a little bit... None of these guys have massive
0:14:34 > 0:14:38amounts of funding like some of the bigger winter sports. A lot of them
0:14:38 > 0:14:41are self-funded, making it difficult to compete against the top of the
0:14:41 > 0:14:48world when you are self-funded.Four tenths quicker than his first run.
0:14:48 > 0:14:54Better from Rupert Staudinger.
0:14:58 > 0:15:02He will hopefully just regain a bit of confidence. Hopefully tomorrow
0:15:02 > 0:15:10when he comes back tomorrow for his third run he will have that start
0:15:10 > 0:15:16sorted out and exit line. So we have a good run tomorrow and see where
0:15:16 > 0:15:24that leaves them for the final run. Adam Rosen, 25th after the first run
0:15:24 > 0:15:28which was a shade disappointing but to recap it did not look untidy by
0:15:28 > 0:15:32any means. It looks good but it comes back to the equipment. If you
0:15:32 > 0:15:37only have one set of runners and that is all you can put on, they
0:15:37 > 0:15:47might not suit these conditions. Runners are really finicky and
0:15:47 > 0:15:54almost like pliers on the Formula 1 tyre. Certain runners like certain
0:15:54 > 0:16:00conditions. And because these guys are limited in their funding and
0:16:00 > 0:16:04they have limited support, they just do not have the ability to buy the
0:16:04 > 0:16:10equipment they need. And again this is a great run from AJ. But the
0:16:10 > 0:16:17speed is not there and they do not have the equipment because they do
0:16:17 > 0:16:21not have that support. And you can see why in the Olympic Games he
0:16:21 > 0:16:27finished 16th, because we have seen worse than that from the guys in
0:16:27 > 0:16:35front of him but it is just the equipment. That is Graham Holmes. He
0:16:35 > 0:16:40will be running the luge for the military. It looks exactly the same
0:16:40 > 0:16:43kind of run and exactly the same time from Adam Rosen. Smooth and
0:16:43 > 0:16:49controlled.Just not especially quick. I think AJ should be happy
0:16:49 > 0:16:53with today. Maybe not with his overall time but the way he has
0:16:53 > 0:16:58performed. He can only drive the equipment he has got. And the drives
0:16:58 > 0:17:02he has put in has been equal to some of the top guys but he just does not
0:17:02 > 0:17:07have the equipment to be able to be up there with them.Good
0:17:07 > 0:17:07have the equipment to be able to be up there with them.Good job, mate.
0:17:07 > 0:17:14Good job. John Jackson saying good job at Felix Loch is the one out in
0:17:14 > 0:17:23front, overtaking Gleirscher. What did you make of that from Adam
0:17:23 > 0:17:28Rosen?Very consistent, his times between the first and second run
0:17:28 > 0:17:31very similar so consistency is calee and he learning with every single
0:17:31 > 0:17:44one. -- consistency is key. It is nine, ten and 11, those corners are
0:17:44 > 0:17:52quite wonky so they need the best exit.If you get something wrong in
0:17:52 > 0:17:57luge, my word it goes wrong. Let's take a look at this, the Slovakian
0:17:57 > 0:18:02flying through the air and then comes crashing down.It is all the
0:18:02 > 0:18:06angles and a centimetre to the left or right, you could just clip a
0:18:06 > 0:18:10corner but all the speed and it lifts you up and then you need to
0:18:10 > 0:18:15try to get back on track as quickly as you can in the next corners.Have
0:18:15 > 0:18:22a look, this is horrifying. He did really well to get it back under
0:18:22 > 0:18:28control, Ninis. The air and then trying to get his body position back
0:18:28 > 0:18:34as quickly as possible. That is so tricky and the race is lost or won
0:18:34 > 0:18:39because of that. You could fracture a bone. You could do. It would need
0:18:39 > 0:18:47to be a bad angle. Normally you get a lot of bruising. And you just get
0:18:47 > 0:18:54on with it. When you're learning, we to cut up a camping mat and stick it
0:18:54 > 0:19:00on the elbows or ankle bones and hips.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04hips. Then it is aerodynamics, and you do not want to hit a wall
0:19:04 > 0:19:14without both.Well I think the Indian, competing in his last
0:19:14 > 0:19:19Olympics and look at this, going to see his fans in the crowd and
0:19:19 > 0:19:28they're just going wild. It is quite a commitment, it is -6 out there.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31Winter sports athletes spend six months of the year abroad travelling
0:19:31 > 0:19:35around the world. Six months training in the summer so your whole
0:19:35 > 0:19:39family and friends, they're part of your journey supporting new year
0:19:39 > 0:19:43after year. And look at that, they're all part of it and enjoying
0:19:43 > 0:19:49that excitement for him.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51that excitement for him.Sometimes you need to remember to enjoy it,
0:19:51 > 0:19:56you're so focused on your competition and you're just in this
0:19:56 > 0:20:02bubble. And sometimes you can forget to get in there and enjoy it.My key
0:20:02 > 0:20:06thing, unless I was relaxed and enjoying it I never raced well. It
0:20:06 > 0:20:12took me a long time year after year to realise hang on, why do I not
0:20:12 > 0:20:16perform as well, I had broken track records in training and never quite
0:20:16 > 0:20:20did it on race day and took a long time to make me realise that I have
0:20:20 > 0:20:28to enjoy it and be in a happy place as Elise
0:20:38 > 0:20:41Christie is.I've chosen to do this board, I need to enjoy it and then
0:20:41 > 0:20:43the results happen. For most of us it is how long the competition
0:20:43 > 0:20:47lasts, all day long and now it is 10:35pm in Korea and still has not
0:20:47 > 0:20:49finished, one more gold medal to be decided today in the ski jumping,
0:20:49 > 0:20:51normal hill. This is how it works.Ski jumping
0:20:51 > 0:20:54takes place on either the normal hill or large hill. Competitors
0:20:54 > 0:20:57typically jump further than the length of a football pitch at speeds
0:20:57 > 0:21:03of 90 miles an hour. Distance is the biggest factor in success. But
0:21:03 > 0:21:08points are also awarded for style in our run, posture, flight and
0:21:08 > 0:21:11landing. Points for distance are determined by where a jumper land in
0:21:11 > 0:21:16relation to the Cape point which is the equivalent of a passport in
0:21:16 > 0:21:20goal. If an athlete jumps beyond that mark they earn extra points. If
0:21:20 > 0:21:26they come up short they lose points. Each competitor has two jumps which
0:21:26 > 0:21:32are combined in the final standings.
0:21:39 > 0:21:47Back at the ripe old age of 45 is Kasai.Talking is through the walls
0:21:47 > 0:21:51there. And they're running late there and have not yet finished the
0:21:51 > 0:21:54first round. It is the final round that will decide the medals. But
0:21:54 > 0:21:59let's see the best of what has already happened with Williams.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03let's see the best of what has already happened with Williams.
0:22:03 > 0:22:12It is going to be difficult, but the ten points back and difficult to
0:22:12 > 0:22:22make that up. There is the double Olympic champion and a reasonable
0:22:22 > 0:22:32distance for Simon Mann. Just happy to be back. He did not even know if
0:22:32 > 0:22:38he would be retiring. He has had no results to write home about four
0:22:38 > 0:22:45years. 2011 the last time he had anything worth writing home about.
0:22:45 > 0:22:53And now he is back and loving it.
0:23:01 > 0:23:08He has come through a lot recently, Simon Ammann. He has been switching
0:23:08 > 0:23:24the knee that he tries to land on. And Prevc of Slovenia now.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27And Prevc of Slovenia now. Hoping to go one better from his Sochi
0:23:27 > 0:23:43performance. Just waiting for the flag to drop.
0:23:43 > 0:23:51Keeping relentless focus on the ground ahead of him. The other
0:23:51 > 0:23:58athletes warming up in the background. And it is the red light.
0:23:58 > 0:24:08Prevc. Maybe a bit out of warm this season. Just the one World Cup
0:24:08 > 0:24:17bronze but considered to be a big medal threat by Slovenia.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19medal threat by Slovenia. Bronze on the large hill, silver on the normal
0:24:19 > 0:24:26hill in Sochi. Only ninth on the large hill at the World
0:24:26 > 0:24:31Championships last year. It has not quite gone his way. And this is a
0:24:31 > 0:24:35form sport as I say. Not that easy even if you have a good long-term
0:24:35 > 0:24:41track record to pull out of the short-term slump in ski jumping.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44Especially with an event like this. And particularly when you're dealing
0:24:44 > 0:24:54with these rather annoying little wind intermissions.
0:25:03 > 0:25:12Looking on the left, Robert Johannson of Norway. A candidate for
0:25:12 > 0:25:29best facial hair! You would think he was listening to BBC coverage!
0:25:35 > 0:25:41We await developments. A little pause for the wind. The jury waiting
0:25:41 > 0:25:48for the wind to be more favourable before they give the all clear to
0:25:48 > 0:25:51Simon Ammann. Probably running about 30 minutes behind schedule. You
0:25:51 > 0:25:58might be able to hear the inner venue announcement team encouraging
0:25:58 > 0:26:01the fans to get up on their feet and downs in order to stay warm. Not the
0:26:01 > 0:26:06worst option.
0:26:06 > 0:26:11-- and dance.
0:26:11 > 0:26:15It was around -8 win the competition started but I suspect it may have
0:26:15 > 0:26:26dropped down to around -10, -11 by now. Prevc is going to try again.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36The gate has been lowered a little bit so you have less speed tacking
0:26:36 > 0:26:47down the in run.
0:26:57 > 0:27:10The distance to be to get where you want to be. The red light again.
0:27:10 > 0:27:12want to be. The red light again. The coaches having animated discussions
0:27:12 > 0:27:18between themselves about
0:27:18 > 0:27:21between themselves about this when condition. More agonising waiting.
0:27:21 > 0:27:29Second-place facial hair contest,
0:27:40 > 0:27:45Richard Freitag.
0:27:59 > 0:28:04Really impressive in qualifying and that should be enough to get him
0:28:04 > 0:28:13through.
0:28:14 > 0:28:26through. Geiger of Germany. Now these selenium, 34 years old.
0:28:26 > 0:28:36Ninth place in Sochi in 2014. A reasonable distance on that. 97
0:28:36 > 0:28:44metres. Damien of Slovenia and now around 12 athletes still to go in
0:28:44 > 0:28:53this first round. It has been an on-off event.
0:29:16 > 0:29:20Pulling off the kind of jump you really want to pull off in an
0:29:20 > 0:29:26Olympic final. A beautiful jump coming through that green laser that
0:29:26 > 0:29:33shows you the distance to beat, just about duck Telemark landing and the
0:29:33 > 0:29:37arm up in the air, the coaches celebrating and that is the
0:29:37 > 0:29:41traditional fist pump from the Polish coach. And the judges love
0:29:41 > 0:29:50it. One of 31.8.
0:29:50 > 0:29:54it. One of 31.8. Hula going into the provisional lead. And we're starting
0:29:54 > 0:30:00to see athletes who had no real right to be contenders in the final
0:30:00 > 0:30:06pulling out some sensational jumps. We've seen Geiger in this
0:30:06 > 0:30:10first-round pulling out a phenomenal jumper Germany and he is by no means
0:30:10 > 0:30:15the leading ski jumper in Germany looking at it on paper. Now down to
0:30:15 > 0:30:23second place because Hula of Poland, not your leading Polish contender as
0:30:23 > 0:30:28that is Kamil Stoch, he has just pulled out a phenomenal job. 111
0:30:28 > 0:30:34metres. That really is sensational. We having this problem with the
0:30:34 > 0:30:39wind.
0:30:40 > 0:30:44The wind conditions are swirling, it is difficult so the athletes are
0:30:44 > 0:30:48forced to wait at the start gate and wait for the jury, controlling the
0:30:48 > 0:30:51orange light that you can see in the corner of your screen, to give them
0:30:51 > 0:30:56the yes or the know. If the light turns red, then Andreas has to get
0:30:56 > 0:31:00off the gate because the wind conditions are no good. If the
0:31:00 > 0:31:04orange light goes green, he is good to go. The coach will drop the flag
0:31:04 > 0:31:11and that will tell him that he can jump. Normally if you have to wait
0:31:11 > 0:31:15that long, you think that there will be a red light sooner rather than
0:31:15 > 0:31:21later. There is the red light, so Andreas Stjernen will shuffle off.
0:31:21 > 0:31:25That's good, she has the chance to recapture will stop we are in the
0:31:25 > 0:31:31middle of the first two rounds of this final. This graphic shows the
0:31:31 > 0:31:37Red Arrows, the wind that is unacceptable to the jury. We had 50
0:31:37 > 0:31:41athletes, of which 30 will qualify for the second round. The bottom 20,
0:31:41 > 0:31:48we get rid of them after the first jump. Sorry, we will see you later.
0:31:48 > 0:31:52If we jump again, we take all the points from the second round which
0:31:52 > 0:31:56you are watching now, add all the points from that, and it gives you
0:31:56 > 0:32:01an Olympic medallist. Here goes Andreas Stjernen... 29 years old.
0:32:01 > 0:32:05Qualified in 15th place. Just a little short of the distance to beat
0:32:05 > 0:32:12line. It brings out a reaction from Andreas Stjernen. He can see the
0:32:12 > 0:32:16line as well as you. A little short. 104 metres, I think it will be more
0:32:16 > 0:32:21than enough to get him through to the second round. As I just told
0:32:21 > 0:32:25you, the score in the first round counts towards the medals. If you
0:32:25 > 0:32:29don't jump as well as you want to, even if you get through to the
0:32:29 > 0:32:33second round, you may have fatally hobbled your chances of getting a
0:32:33 > 0:32:37medal. We wait to see what the judges give to Andreas Stjernen.
0:32:37 > 0:32:43They liked it. The maximum score from the judges is 20. Discard the
0:32:43 > 0:32:47highest score and the lowest. He is 17 points off Stefan Hula, who we
0:32:47 > 0:32:54just saw from Poland. That's a relatively big gap to catch up on.
0:32:54 > 0:32:5926-year-old Markus Eisenbichler from Germany. Third at last year's World
0:32:59 > 0:33:04Championships last year... Not too bad, a little short of the line. And
0:33:04 > 0:33:10at this point, you are getting to jumps who should really be pushing
0:33:10 > 0:33:14further each time. This is the top ten that we are seeing now. The
0:33:14 > 0:33:18reason they are jumping is because they are best in the world and
0:33:18 > 0:33:22paper. Theoretically every single person should be pushing the
0:33:22 > 0:33:26envelope a little more. Not the case here with Markus Eisenbichler. He
0:33:26 > 0:33:31has already said he isn't afraid of the cold weather. He's used to
0:33:31 > 0:33:36jumping in -25, now it is -10 so no trouble! That was Markus
0:33:36 > 0:33:45Eisenbichler.Yes!He has changed his mind! The judges are giving him
0:33:45 > 0:33:52a teams, 18.5s. Into second place provisionally with 121.6 points. It
0:33:52 > 0:33:57gives you an idea of how well Stefan Hula jumped. Still ten points adrift
0:33:57 > 0:34:06and suddenly, Stefan Hula is an Olympic gold medal contender. His
0:34:06 > 0:34:09team-mate, Dawid Kubacki, very impressive in qualifying. Not any
0:34:09 > 0:34:13more, where did that go, he says. Where was my qualifying form? Not
0:34:13 > 0:34:18there. Two World Cup bronze medals as an individual, but I don't think
0:34:18 > 0:34:25we will see any more from him. A surprisingly bad jump. 88 metres...
0:34:25 > 0:34:31Timing off the end run was not fantastic. His body shape looks OK.
0:34:31 > 0:34:35You can see that he struggles a little on the landing. Relatively
0:34:35 > 0:34:38clean. It doesn't matter, your star points count for nothing if you do
0:34:38 > 0:34:44not have the distance. Despondent, I think. That's how to sum up his
0:34:44 > 0:34:54face. 92 points. In 27th place. Dawid Kubacki, so impressive in
0:34:54 > 0:34:58qualifying, doesn't even make the second round. That's how quickly
0:34:58 > 0:35:01things can turn around in this sport, it's unpredictable and great
0:35:01 > 0:35:08fun. Now, the 26-year-old from Japan, Junshiro Kobayashi. We've
0:35:08 > 0:35:16already seen his brother, Ryoyu Kobayashi. Junshiro Kobayashi got
0:35:16 > 0:35:22his first-ever World Cup win this season. He is in fourth. But now
0:35:22 > 0:35:26well short for the second time in a row, the athlete coming down and it
0:35:26 > 0:35:34feels like, why didn't I deliver? 93 metres, it isn't good enough. Don't
0:35:34 > 0:35:40look at me, it wasn't my fault! His younger brother Ryoyu is five years
0:35:40 > 0:35:48younger and he got a distance of 108 metres. If you wonder why the older
0:35:48 > 0:35:52brother looks a little disappointed right now, it will be because he has
0:35:52 > 0:35:57just managed to jump 50 metres shorter of his brother five years
0:35:57 > 0:36:05younger. -- 15 metres. That doesn't feel good! Right now, Junshiro
0:36:05 > 0:36:09Kobayashi isn't going through to the second round, unless somebody else
0:36:09 > 0:36:14does even worse. And I doubt it's going to be the defending world
0:36:14 > 0:36:21champion, Stefan Kraft...
0:36:21 > 0:36:28champion, Stefan Kraft... Solid! Not very spectacular but solid. Steven
0:36:28 > 0:36:37Croft has been inconsistent, -- Stefan Kraft.
0:36:38 > 0:36:41Stefan Kraft. If you add the results together, in 20th place. Not great
0:36:41 > 0:36:45if you are the defending world champion. Qualifying fifth on
0:36:45 > 0:36:51Thursday night, essentially his Olympic debut. That jump may not
0:36:51 > 0:36:56necessarily put him in contention. 103.5 metres isn't too bad, it
0:36:56 > 0:37:01depends on what the judges think. That is a good-looking landing. He
0:37:01 > 0:37:07is nervously optimistic. But the judges like it. 18.5s. Into second
0:37:07 > 0:37:15place. It is good, very good. Medal contention. Still nine points off
0:37:15 > 0:37:23Cooler and that monster jump! I'm wondering, will anyone catch him? --
0:37:23 > 0:37:28Hula.
0:37:33 > 0:37:36Hula. Robert Johansson and his moustache onto the starting gate, we
0:37:36 > 0:37:50are in a run of three Norwegians. Daniel Andre Tande and Johann Andre
0:37:50 > 0:37:52Forfang are also medal contenders. Let's see how Robert Johansson gets
0:37:52 > 0:38:03on... He looked a little unsettled in the air... Is coach looks
0:38:03 > 0:38:07reasonably content. I'm not sure he held his form well enough for the
0:38:07 > 0:38:14judges. That may be a little low. There were a lot of little
0:38:14 > 0:38:20adjustments going on. Landing isn't too bad, you want to keep your skis
0:38:20 > 0:38:25just about shoulder width apart. That is a Telemark landing, where
0:38:25 > 0:38:31you bend your knee and you transfer your weight from your front foot to
0:38:31 > 0:38:41your back foot. It's an all right score. It shows the level that the
0:38:41 > 0:38:45athletes are demanding of themselves, it is going up. Going
0:38:45 > 0:38:48into the competition. It's a handsome score, very respectable,
0:38:48 > 0:38:53but he knows that he is now 12 points off the lead. It's a big
0:38:53 > 0:38:58distance... And here comes Johann Andre Forfang... He won the last
0:38:58 > 0:39:04pre-Olympic World Cup, a reasonable distance there. The issue for this
0:39:04 > 0:39:10man is consistency. If he can put together two good jumps in a row,
0:39:10 > 0:39:16you will be a contender. It rarely happens. In the last World Cup, it
0:39:16 > 0:39:20did happen, he beat the Olympic champion from 2014, Kamil Stoch. We
0:39:20 > 0:39:28will see him in a feud jumps time. He does have a win under his belt,
0:39:28 > 0:39:33Forfang.
0:39:40 > 0:39:45So, Forfang, 125.9 points, into second place. Very solid! The first
0:39:45 > 0:39:58time that we have seen someone get close to Stefan Hula. Of Poland.
0:39:58 > 0:40:03Daniel Andre Tande has been on antibiotics or this week after an
0:40:03 > 0:40:11infection. It doesn't really make a difference... A little short.
0:40:11 > 0:40:15difference... A little short. 103.5 metres, a couple of metres off what
0:40:15 > 0:40:20Forfang just did. Equal with the world champion who we saw moments
0:40:20 > 0:40:28ago. Stefan Kraft. In the final round I will tell you a story about
0:40:28 > 0:40:35Daniel Andre Tande. He is afraid of heights! I shall explain... He
0:40:35 > 0:40:39turned 24 last month, and he is the ski flying world champion, they go
0:40:39 > 0:40:44over hundreds of metres, 200 plus metres. But right now, he isn't
0:40:44 > 0:40:51flying quite how he would like to. Starting to feel like the Norwegian
0:40:51 > 0:40:52coach...
0:40:55 > 0:40:59Tenth place, I think Daniel Andre Tande with his little wave was just
0:40:59 > 0:41:02waving goodbye to a chance of an Olympic medal tonight. You never
0:41:02 > 0:41:06know. We have seen some of the top jumpers are not getting what they
0:41:06 > 0:41:13want here. You never know what is going to happen in the final round.
0:41:13 > 0:41:16Top in qualifying, Andreas Wellinger surprised himself as much as anyone
0:41:16 > 0:41:20else. He ruined his chances of a Middle four years ago. He had a bad
0:41:20 > 0:41:28first-round jump. -- a medal. 22 years old. A chance to put that
0:41:28 > 0:41:33right if we get a green light in the wind... His coach looks down, and he
0:41:33 > 0:41:44gives it the green flag... A solid take-off... A good distance. Just
0:41:44 > 0:41:52not quite the longest jump that we have seen. But 104.5, depending on
0:41:52 > 0:41:57the scores from the judges. It is going to leave Andreas Wellinger
0:41:57 > 0:42:07just about in contention. Here is that form. Hold it... Do not let it
0:42:07 > 0:42:17waver.
0:42:25 > 0:42:32They have already seen Andreas Wellinger and Markus Eisenbichler
0:42:32 > 0:42:40looking good for Germany tonight. And Karl Geiger. And we have another
0:42:40 > 0:42:47German now... Richard Freitag. This man is their favourite. He has a
0:42:47 > 0:42:55chance of winning. A good distance...
0:42:55 > 0:43:05distance... 106 metres, that will be a contender. Still five metres off
0:43:05 > 0:43:08Hula's monster jump earlier on. There's a good chance of Richard
0:43:08 > 0:43:13Freitag going second year. His final jump last week was only the 28th
0:43:13 > 0:43:18best, when he has been among the top three or top for all season. He was
0:43:18 > 0:43:21unsettled by the wind. That cannot be helpful tonight. It is a real
0:43:21 > 0:43:31struggle. That was good! That looks like it could put him in contention.
0:43:31 > 0:43:36See how the judges reacted? They loved it! As soon as you see 19s on
0:43:36 > 0:43:47the board, you know someone will be a very happy man. Now, the defending
0:43:47 > 0:43:51Olympic champion won the normal cell and the long hill in 2014,
0:43:51 > 0:43:55qualifying in second place here. -- the normal health. How does he do
0:43:55 > 0:44:00tonight?
0:44:00 > 0:44:07It's a big jump, that's what he has got extra!
0:44:07 > 0:44:08It's a big jump, that's what he has got That is up there. The Polish
0:44:08 > 0:44:14fans are loving it. He is bidding to be the first man to successfully
0:44:14 > 0:44:19defend a normal
0:44:22 > 0:44:25defend a normal hill title. He could be the first to do the double in
0:44:25 > 0:44:35both games. In 2002 we had Simon Ammann who did it. Will Kamil Stoch
0:44:35 > 0:44:39be able to do the double? The last jumper of the night. Let's see where
0:44:39 > 0:44:44he will fit in here... A little off course down there. But there is the
0:44:44 > 0:44:55fist bump. And 125.9, into second place. Will Kamil Stoch be able to
0:44:55 > 0:45:05do it? Up there with Forfang of Norway but they both trail Polish
0:45:05 > 0:45:08Hula by more than five points. It will be interesting because Hula
0:45:08 > 0:45:15came from nowhere to lead this Olympic ski jump final after one
0:45:15 > 0:45:19round of two. We knew that he was having a strong season. We knew that
0:45:19 > 0:45:25he was up to 30th in the world and right now, look at this. Hula, from
0:45:25 > 0:45:27nowhere, is first!
0:45:27 > 0:45:31We having this problem with the wind.
0:45:31 > 0:45:36Poland in a very strong position to win the gold medal. The wind
0:45:36 > 0:45:40obviously causing delays but also affecting the jumpers in different
0:45:40 > 0:45:45ways. So some of them jumping much shorter than the qualifying
0:45:45 > 0:45:51distances.Would that be why? I think that has an effect. When you
0:45:51 > 0:45:56get into this kind of environment and you are disrupted, jumpers have
0:45:56 > 0:46:00gone out and come back three or four times and not been able to junk. You
0:46:00 > 0:46:07need such mental capacity to keep on top of it. We had a Bulgarian
0:46:07 > 0:46:10contender who really mass debate and some others did not. And it will be
0:46:10 > 0:46:14telling when it gets even colder this evening who is able to master
0:46:14 > 0:46:19that on this final jump when it is all one thing. It is 11 o'clock
0:46:19 > 0:46:23there now and how cold is it? According to the temperature gauge I
0:46:23 > 0:46:31have here it is minus ten. I think that is on the side!Looking at more
0:46:31 > 0:46:37like minus 13. Absolutely. Just seeing some of the highlights. How
0:46:37 > 0:46:42long before they start the final round?Theoretically in around half
0:46:42 > 0:46:48an hour, 40 minutes time. It is scheduled for half an hour ago so
0:46:48 > 0:46:54you tell me. I think they will try to turn it around as quickly as they
0:46:54 > 0:46:58can and hopefully we will all be home for midnight!I doubt it very
0:46:58 > 0:47:08much! So do I! How many of those that we have just seen God they go
0:47:08 > 0:47:12in reverse order?Yes so you have 30 going in the final and it will take
0:47:12 > 0:47:18at least 45 minutes.
0:47:18 > 0:47:27at least 45 minutes. We will definitely see Kasai compete in his
0:47:27 > 0:47:32eight Olympic Games. All very exciting out there. We will be back
0:47:32 > 0:47:40their lives and that will be the final medals of the day to be
0:47:40 > 0:47:45decided. In the ski jumping. But first we have this guide to the
0:47:45 > 0:47:54region that hosts these Winter Olympics.
0:47:55 > 0:48:04Hello and welcome to Pyeongchang. As the locals would say...
0:48:04 > 0:48:11Home to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. And first to be held here in
0:48:11 > 0:48:16South Korea. We're roughly 200 kilometres east of the capital city
0:48:16 > 0:48:20of Seoul and spread across four locations where will we will have
0:48:20 > 0:48:25plenty of drama and thrills and spills. And excitement. All that
0:48:25 > 0:48:33over the next two weeks. In Pyeongchang so far the majority of
0:48:33 > 0:48:40recorded temperatures have been -10 degrees or lower.
0:48:42 > 0:48:48So we looked to be on course for the coldest Winter Olympics to date.
0:48:48 > 0:48:52South Korea is one of the world's leading providers of technology and
0:48:52 > 0:48:58that is being embraced here at the Winter Olympics. I am ready.
0:48:58 > 0:49:05Actually I'm not, it is a little bit scary. Nice to meet you. Out of the
0:49:05 > 0:49:16gate and what a start. Tell me a joke!
0:49:16 > 0:49:19Tell me a joke! There is also the chance to be a pilot in the
0:49:19 > 0:49:24dangerous world of bobsleigh. But don't worry because I have got my
0:49:24 > 0:49:34lucky egg. That was insane! The food in South Korea is superb. Chicken
0:49:34 > 0:49:45Rahman and of course kimchee which is fermented cabbage. Everything you
0:49:45 > 0:49:49need before you head out for a good time. Or you could find yourself
0:49:49 > 0:50:04here singing along to some of your favourite kapok.
0:50:06 > 0:50:11# Gangnam Style.
0:50:13 > 0:50:18Pyeongchang also has some incredible temples like this Buddhist temple
0:50:18 > 0:50:24here. A national treasure which is a beautiful example of Korean
0:50:24 > 0:50:26architecture which celebrates the rich history and culture and
0:50:26 > 0:50:35religion of the country. Over the course of the next couple
0:50:35 > 0:50:39of weeks the most amount of medals ever will be handed out inside the
0:50:39 > 0:50:44Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium. It promises to be absolutely
0:50:44 > 0:50:50spectacular. Strap yourself in, this is Pyeongchang 2018.
0:50:50 > 0:50:56Brilliant stuff from Tim. Just sorry I did not manage to have a go at the
0:50:56 > 0:51:01karaoke. Now the first medals were awarded in Skiathlon in the early
0:51:01 > 0:51:06hours of the morning and the field included Marat pure organ of Norway.
0:51:06 > 0:51:12Athlete.
0:51:26 > 0:51:29-- Marit Bjoergen.
0:51:29 > 0:51:33-- Marit Bjoergen.
0:51:33 > 0:51:37Plenty of women still in touch. Want to deny Marit Bjoergen this golden
0:51:37 > 0:51:44opportunity.
0:51:44 > 0:51:48opportunity.Still at least seven people who have the pedigree to take
0:51:48 > 0:51:53these last few kilometres and make it their own. But they're all up
0:51:53 > 0:51:58against someone in Marit Bjoergen who has done it time and time again.
0:51:58 > 0:52:02The last two Olympics Skiathlon is she has fended off everyone. And it
0:52:02 > 0:52:08must play on their minds now of the rest of the pack. What would Marit
0:52:08 > 0:52:12Bjoergen do, what should I be doing now.Absolutely and I think she will
0:52:12 > 0:52:17be hard to beat if it comes down to the final sprint. To me she looks
0:52:17 > 0:52:21very comfortable. I think she still has something in the tank. She will
0:52:21 > 0:52:29be feeling confident going into that last lap on the course.Heidi Weng
0:52:29 > 0:52:39just hanging on to the leading group.
0:52:40 > 0:52:45group. Diggins in there as well. Heidi Weng just on the back of that
0:52:45 > 0:52:56group. Then a five second gap to the leader of the second group. Just
0:52:56 > 0:53:01about to get very interesting here. Marit Bjoergen has not had this race
0:53:01 > 0:53:07all to herself and there are women here who genuinely can put under
0:53:07 > 0:53:11pressure in the closing stages. But how brave are they willing to be and
0:53:11 > 0:53:15how much will they have to push on that really steep hill coming into
0:53:15 > 0:53:21the stadium at the end of this loop. Ever Anderson, what a story that
0:53:21 > 0:53:26would be for Sweden. Impossible to overstate the rivalry between Sweden
0:53:26 > 0:53:33and Norway in this sport. Everyone clear the decks, sit down and watch
0:53:33 > 0:53:38this.
0:53:40 > 0:53:43this. Christine Calor coming ahead, and Sweden would love to take this
0:53:43 > 0:53:51opening run.
0:53:51 > 0:54:03opening run. -- Charlotte Kalla. Marit Bjoergen in third place, right
0:54:03 > 0:54:11alongside Parmakoski. Parmakoski just behind. And this is a really
0:54:11 > 0:54:18bold move from Charlotte Kalla. We know she has the class to become a
0:54:18 > 0:54:22Winter Olympic champion because she already is one in ten K. Can she do
0:54:22 > 0:54:28it here today? This is a big move from Charlotte Kalla. For me Marit
0:54:28 > 0:54:36Bjoergen played it badly. And that cost her some valuable seconds. This
0:54:36 > 0:54:42is a big move from Charlotte Kalla. That is a gap and look at this hill
0:54:42 > 0:54:49as well. Charlotte Kalla the Swedish fans have been saying that this is
0:54:49 > 0:54:53third time. If she is going to win this Olympic gold medal it has to be
0:54:53 > 0:54:58today but all of the conditions are in her favour. The snow underfoot in
0:54:58 > 0:55:03terms of what conditions are like, it all plays into what she likes. No
0:55:03 > 0:55:08real dominant force this season. Charlotte Kalla, now a sizeable gap.
0:55:08 > 0:55:13And not long left to go at all. Marit Bjoergen will have to do
0:55:13 > 0:55:18something special. Four seconds could mean an awful lot here and I
0:55:18 > 0:55:24think that is really big what she has just done.Charlotte Kalla has
0:55:24 > 0:55:28taken it to the Iron Lady. Remember Marit Bjoergen can still make
0:55:28 > 0:55:38history. That is the Austrian, a really classy performer. But
0:55:38 > 0:55:41Charlotte Kalla has raced smart and she has got this raised at the
0:55:41 > 0:55:48moment. The Swedish bands in the stadium getting ready to be very
0:55:48 > 0:55:55excited because it is not just Charlotte Kalla, but ever Anderson
0:55:55 > 0:56:00also still in the mix. So the momentum at the moment is with the
0:56:00 > 0:56:10suite. Only one Norwegian in the top three. And there is Marit Bjoergen.
0:56:10 > 0:56:18Anderson right behind her.Look at this hill as they climb, if
0:56:18 > 0:56:23Charlotte Kalla does this, people already love her personality in
0:56:23 > 0:56:27Sweden, she's a emotional and she says what she thinks, someone people
0:56:27 > 0:56:32really want to in terms of the way that she reacts. And not only
0:56:32 > 0:56:34potentially going to win the gold medal but will also become the first
0:56:34 > 0:56:40Swedish woman to become a three times Olympic gold medallist in
0:56:40 > 0:56:44cross-country skiing. She would put herself even further out there as a
0:56:44 > 0:56:48national hero if she can take the gold medal.Really working hard
0:56:48 > 0:56:55going up this hill. Last time some tactics still played to take it easy
0:56:55 > 0:57:00but now this is 100% all out and put everything on the line. And Marit
0:57:00 > 0:57:08Bjoergen not giving up yet. She will not give up until the end.If she
0:57:08 > 0:57:13makes up this gap and wins the gold medal it surely would confirm Marit
0:57:13 > 0:57:18Bjoergen is the greatest female cross-country skier of all time.It
0:57:18 > 0:57:21would be pretty special. Charlotte Kalla is no slouch so that would be
0:57:21 > 0:57:26incredible. But she is incredibly competitive, Marit Bjoergen and I
0:57:26 > 0:57:29know that she just will not give up. She still believes that she can do
0:57:29 > 0:57:36it.This is getting tight for second and third. We know the class of
0:57:36 > 0:57:48Marit Bjoergen but Anderson of Sweden is
0:57:48 > 0:57:51Sweden is there and with a gap as it is unless there is an absolutely
0:57:51 > 0:57:58huge move up that brutal hill coming into the stadium from Marit
0:57:58 > 0:58:02Bjoergen, this looks very much as though it could be a winning lead.
0:58:02 > 0:58:0837 years of age, Marit Bjoergen, Father Time marches on. She has the
0:58:08 > 0:58:14class to close the gap but she needs to do something right now. Charlotte
0:58:14 > 0:58:18Kalla will be hurting, she was brave and bold, she will be starting to
0:58:18 > 0:58:23feel this and Marit Bjoergen may come under pressure from the Finnish
0:58:23 > 0:58:28athlete who pushed so close to the world title last year. There is
0:58:28 > 0:58:39Marit Bjoergen, number eight. Anderson now in fourth place. Marit
0:58:39 > 0:58:44Bjoergen needs to find something. She could still produce history. Any
0:58:44 > 0:58:48medal would make the greatest on her own of all time. And you mentioned
0:58:48 > 0:58:55the history were Charlotte Kalla, if she wins a medal here she will be up
0:58:55 > 0:59:00there with the Alpine skier as the greatest Swedish individual
0:59:00 > 0:59:05medallist with six Winter Olympic medals. That is the gap. Surely this
0:59:05 > 0:59:11is too much even for Marit Bjoergen. Even for Marit Bjoergen, I think she
0:59:11 > 0:59:17might have let it go too much, too little and too late from there.
0:59:17 > 0:59:20Phenomenal skiing from the ladies behind but I think Charlotte Kalla
0:59:20 > 0:59:24has skied the perfect race today. And Marit Bjoergen absolutely not
0:59:24 > 0:59:32having it her own way Parmakoski still hopped on heels. And maybe she
0:59:32 > 0:59:37does not have that finishing spirit in her. Parmakoski definitely
0:59:37 > 0:59:42working hard to stay on tail. And Parmakoski, it shows that she is
0:59:42 > 0:59:47finding it easy enough to stay in contention with Marit Bjoergen. If
0:59:47 > 0:59:55had something, Parmakoski would not be able to stay as close as she is.
0:59:55 > 0:59:59Charlotte Kalla has raced superbly. Marit Bjoergen now has a little gap
0:59:59 > 1:00:11over Parmakoski. This will be a sweet moment for Charlotte Kalla.
1:00:11 > 1:00:16The grimmest turns to a smile, she will secure the first gold of the
1:00:16 > 1:00:232018 Winter Olympics here in Pyeongchang. A big effort from
1:00:23 > 1:00:27Parmakoski trying to close down Marit Bjorgen. There will be history
1:00:27 > 1:00:33for the Norwegian today but not in the position to which she has grown
1:00:33 > 1:00:35accustomed. Charlotte Kalla, Sweden's Golden girl, has delivered
1:00:35 > 1:00:42perhaps the performance of her life. So bold, so brave and it is she who
1:00:42 > 1:00:47becomes the skiathlon Winter Olympic champion. History is secured for
1:00:47 > 1:00:52Marit Bjorgen. She is right to celebrate her silver medal. It makes
1:00:52 > 1:01:03her the most decorated female Winter Olympian in history and
1:01:03 > 1:01:05Olympian in history and she has other chances for gold. Parmakoski
1:01:05 > 1:01:07did her very best to put the Norwegian and the Swede and
1:01:07 > 1:01:11depression. She completes the podium after silver this year. -- last
1:01:11 > 1:01:18year, bronze now. Sweden's Charlotte Kalla, what a race and what a

1:01:22 > 1:01:23performance! STUDIO: Rob Walker describing the action there along
1:01:23 > 1:01:28with Rob Williams and Posy Musgrave. Holly Ward be commentating on the
1:01:28 > 1:01:36final round in the ski jumping.Day one will go into Day two,
1:01:36 > 1:01:41remarkably.Amazing! He won't get a day off...Neither should he! Get
1:01:41 > 1:01:46him out there! It was tougher in the old days. And to prove is mildly
1:01:46 > 1:01:51chilly here in Salford, but we want to assure everyone that we are not
1:01:51 > 1:01:57wimping out of getting cold just because we are here, we've done our
1:01:57 > 1:02:03time, when it comes to your nostrils freezing up, we'd been there! I
1:02:03 > 1:02:09remember going back 24 years. I brought the souvenirs to prove it!
1:02:09 > 1:02:13At the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, the coldest game is on record, ever.
1:02:13 > 1:02:18It was about -6 in the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang and in
1:02:18 > 1:02:24Lillehammer it was -12 and going down... That was all they gave us!
1:02:24 > 1:02:32New heated seats? No blankets...And it was before microfibre stuff!
1:02:32 > 1:02:39Steady!Polystyrene, not given a blanket but a nice plastic to blend
1:02:39 > 1:02:43into the background. This one came from to ring. The one from Lily
1:02:43 > 1:02:51hammer they had to chip off me with a chisel by the end of it! -- Turin.
1:02:51 > 1:02:55Part of me was forever numbed. Those were the best games for me that
1:02:55 > 1:03:02after a brilliant start, I think we will have an equally fantastic
1:03:02 > 1:03:07Winter Olympics, and with the cold. It'd be good to see the action
1:03:07 > 1:03:12continue.Yes, it's time to go back to the ski jumping. The first of the
1:03:12 > 1:03:17jumping medals is about to be decided. Kamil Stoch going for the
1:03:17 > 1:03:22double 22 rival Simon Mann who did it a couple of times but it is a
1:03:22 > 1:03:33Polish competitor -- Simon Ammann. Let's go back to Ollie Williams for
1:03:33 > 1:03:37the second of the jumps...
1:03:37 > 1:03:38Let's go back to Ollie Williams for the second of the jumps...
1:03:38 > 1:03:41COMMENTATOR: Hazel, thank you. I can find some people here who
1:03:41 > 1:03:45would take advantage of heated seats, if you can provide! Welcome
1:03:45 > 1:03:49back. It is the final round, four jumpers in, 30 made it through from
1:03:49 > 1:03:56the first round. Every point they score now, it is added to their
1:03:56 > 1:03:59points from the first round. That is how we get a total. The gentleman
1:03:59 > 1:04:08you are watching right now, he is for Slovenia and it is Jernej
1:04:08 > 1:04:16Damjan, 101 points in the first round. Let me give you some context
1:04:16 > 1:04:23for Hula, the leader. It will take something relatively spectacular to
1:04:23 > 1:04:28see Jernej Damjan be a contender at the end here. Hula got 108. He will
1:04:28 > 1:04:36turn that frown upside down. He is not sure. Now in second place. He
1:04:36 > 1:04:39won't be a contender coming into this but he got through to the
1:04:39 > 1:04:45final. We are going in reverse order... The competitors with the
1:04:45 > 1:04:49lowest qualifying scores from the first round are going first...
1:04:49 > 1:04:54Meaning we build up to the grand finale of this fascinating Polish
1:04:54 > 1:05:03duel. Between the defending Olympic champion Kamil Stoch and out of
1:05:03 > 1:05:10nowhere, Stefan Hula. Now, from the Czech Republic, it is Roman
1:05:10 > 1:05:14Koudelka. The coach not massively thrilled, he has come straight off
1:05:14 > 1:05:19the rostrum. 103 metres in the first round, to get through to the second
1:05:19 > 1:05:22round, that would have been good enough but now we are attempting to
1:05:22 > 1:05:29win medals. Look at that, tongue out, working at the jump. 103 metres
1:05:29 > 1:05:36is probably not good. Two factors to the scoring of the ski jump. First
1:05:36 > 1:05:40is the distance... You can see the green line, the laser light crossing
1:05:40 > 1:05:46the landing area. You can see that, it isn't CGI, it is inside of the
1:05:46 > 1:05:50arena. If you beat the green light, you are essentially beating the
1:05:50 > 1:05:57first-place athlete. Otherwise, you are not. Then there is the point
1:05:57 > 1:06:01where you can see there is a red marking. If you advance beyond it,
1:06:01 > 1:06:05you get more points for your distance and if you do not make it,
1:06:05 > 1:06:11you don't get as many. Simple as that. The second half of scoring is
1:06:11 > 1:06:15your style. You need to look good in the area with a bold jump. Hold your
1:06:15 > 1:06:21form and land property. Telemark landing, I will point that out to
1:06:21 > 1:06:28you now. This is Jonathan Learoyd, competing for France but he has
1:06:28 > 1:06:31British parents. The closest thing to a British competitor here. A
1:06:31 > 1:06:38solid long jump, the coaches love it! As does Jonathan Learoyd, only
1:06:38 > 1:06:4217 years old. Can you believe it? In the final of the Olympic ski jump at
1:06:42 > 1:06:50the age of 17. The jump distance was very strong. By his standards, that
1:06:50 > 1:06:58is good. Only a young teenager who doesn't come from a country with
1:06:58 > 1:07:05much ski jump heritage. He allows himself a little smile, at the
1:07:05 > 1:07:11bottom.
1:07:11 > 1:07:15bottom. The judges liked it. 103.8 points, putting him in third place
1:07:15 > 1:07:27for now. We still have 24 people left to go. Now, with a bronze and
1:07:27 > 1:07:36silver in Sochi, we have Peter Prevc... What a jump! He brings out
1:07:36 > 1:07:43the big guns when he needs to. 113 metres. That's as far as anybody has
1:07:43 > 1:07:48jumped this week on this hill. A fantastic distance! Watch the form
1:07:48 > 1:07:56and see how still he remains all the way down... Leaning forwards and
1:07:56 > 1:08:07blazing through the green line. That is exceptionally strong, that is
1:08:07 > 1:08:14what Sweden know he is capable of. Look at those scores from the
1:08:14 > 1:08:17judges. Absolutely phenomenal! He is one of the only ski jumpers to ever
1:08:17 > 1:08:23get perfect 20s. Like perfect temperament in gymnastics, it is
1:08:23 > 1:08:35very rare. He is one of five or six. -- a perfect ten in gymnastics. We
1:08:35 > 1:08:42are going to wait for the Bulgarian, Vladimir Zografski, he waited for
1:08:42 > 1:08:47ten minutes in the first round due to a wind stoppage. If you get
1:08:47 > 1:08:52crosswinds on the course, if they are not fair, the jury shuts down
1:08:52 > 1:08:57the hill for a while. Vladimir Zografski is waiting at the side of
1:08:57 > 1:09:03the gate. You can see that bar across the front there. If it turns
1:09:03 > 1:09:06to green, Zografski will shuffle across and go down but he cannot do
1:09:06 > 1:09:11that until the jury say yes, they've done that now. The light behind goes
1:09:11 > 1:09:16red to orange. When it goes Green, Zografski will be given the OK. It
1:09:16 > 1:09:21has to be said, after sitting there for ten minutes in the first round,
1:09:21 > 1:09:26having to compose himself again and again, he delivers a brilliant jump.
1:09:26 > 1:09:34What will get this time? 106.8 points on the first time around. A
1:09:34 > 1:09:44great distance again.
1:09:46 > 1:09:53Almost up there with Peter Prevc. His dad was a ski jumper in the 1982
1:09:53 > 1:09:58Olympics. That is a really strong score. That angle, leaning so far
1:09:58 > 1:10:04forward. Keep your skis in the shape of a V, they are your wings. They
1:10:04 > 1:10:08give you the live. The Telemark landing. And you're back leg. If you
1:10:08 > 1:10:17hold it, the judges are looking for it.
1:10:17 > 1:10:27it. Solid judging. A great Olympics for Zografski so far.
1:10:27 > 1:10:33for Zografski so far. So, eight competitors so far.
1:10:33 > 1:10:37competitors so far. Peter Prevc leading. You never know, as much as
1:10:37 > 1:10:40this is about these competitors in their second rounds, trying to
1:10:40 > 1:10:47deliver huge scores, if it goes wrong, suddenly you can be at the
1:10:47 > 1:10:51back. With 234 points, Peter Prevc comedy never know, it might be
1:10:51 > 1:10:56enough for something?
1:10:57 > 1:11:00enough for something? The 28-year-old from Austria, twice a
1:11:00 > 1:11:05world silver medallist in this event... If you remember Marcus
1:11:05 > 1:11:12Platt, who
1:11:12 > 1:11:18Platt, who competed -- who competed in the louche, he is his uncle. It's
1:11:18 > 1:11:22an impressive Olympic heritage for Gregor Schlierenzauer. A six time
1:11:22 > 1:11:33Olympic uncle. This is his third family... Into the air. Just about
1:11:33 > 1:11:42at the point, the construction point, the construction point. If
1:11:42 > 1:11:47you go at above, you get more points, if you don't, you get fewer.
1:11:47 > 1:11:55He is 1.5 metres over the Cape point for the hill, which is 98 metres. He
1:11:55 > 1:12:00gets a small bonus on his score. Then you at the judges points, and a
1:12:00 > 1:12:04wind compensation score, and a gate compensation score for that to
1:12:04 > 1:12:09ensure everyone is happy. Then we come up with the score you see
1:12:09 > 1:12:18appearing before your eyes. So, scoring 103.6.
1:12:18 > 1:12:20scoring 103.6. -12.9 means that there was a tailwind behind. If you
1:12:20 > 1:12:23get a boost from the wind, you get points taken off due to level it
1:12:23 > 1:12:27out. Where you see that for the wind, that means you essentially got
1:12:27 > 1:12:3312.9 points worth of wind benefit. And we are taking them back,
1:12:33 > 1:12:37otherwise it is unfair. Similarly, jumping into a headwind, we will
1:12:37 > 1:12:42give you extra points because you had to work harder. It's all about
1:12:42 > 1:12:48ski jump levelling the playing field and acknowledging the wind is never
1:12:48 > 1:12:58the same for two competitors. Tailed off a little bit the last couple of
1:12:58 > 1:13:04years, he has come really close to the podium before. And what about
1:13:04 > 1:13:12tonight?
1:13:12 > 1:13:15He isn't going to do it. That's the answer. Now we have the green light,
1:13:15 > 1:13:20there are some big jumps in this round. If you are not hitting the
1:13:20 > 1:13:28green line, we can count you out. 103 metres for Michael Hayboeck,
1:13:28 > 1:13:35it's unlikely to do much. To be competitive here and go above Peter
1:13:35 > 1:13:45Prevc, he would need 125 points or so, which is probably unlikely! The
1:13:45 > 1:13:49Telemark landing, hold it until you get past what is essentially a fall
1:13:49 > 1:13:57line. The judges liked it. Only gets 110.5 points. It doesn't matter how
1:13:57 > 1:14:01much the judges like your jump, if it did not go far, you've got to do
1:14:01 > 1:14:08both. These are the standings so far... Slovenians will be reassured
1:14:08 > 1:14:12about that. They were worried that Peter Prevc wasn't really going to
1:14:12 > 1:14:22perform. Michael Hayboeck in third, who we just saw.
1:14:24 > 1:14:26who we just saw. He has special bindings, see if you can see those
1:14:26 > 1:14:31little hooks holding the skis and boots together, as you go down,
1:14:31 > 1:14:36making sure that they don't separate. There are a few safety
1:14:36 > 1:14:39mechanisms in place, ensuring you never end up away from your skis.
1:14:39 > 1:14:53Look at that from Prevc! He is on the left there.
1:15:00 > 1:15:07You might just be able to make out this helmet and that is a lion or a
1:15:07 > 1:15:15tiger painting on top of his helmet because his last name, Kot, it means
1:15:15 > 1:15:23cat in Poland. So this is Kot for Poland. To Polish athletes and this
1:15:23 > 1:15:28is another guy who really can compete. He has watched his
1:15:28 > 1:15:32team-mates Kamil Stoch and Stefan Hula putting themselves in great
1:15:32 > 1:15:39medal positions.
1:15:39 > 1:15:46medal positions. But he could do it. He's from a dynasty of Polish
1:15:46 > 1:15:51jumping that has been so much fun to watch over the last 20 years. He
1:15:51 > 1:15:56also will have to wait because this is the wind delay we have been
1:15:56 > 1:16:01talking about. If wind conditions are not right you shuffle back off
1:16:01 > 1:16:11the gate and someone gives you that Patching blanket. -- fetching. Maybe
1:16:11 > 1:16:15you should be allowed to have a cape. So essentially he's being
1:16:15 > 1:16:20smuggled until such time as the wind conditions change. Meanwhile Peter
1:16:20 > 1:16:28Prevc getting to sit in the hot seat. The actual warmth of that hot
1:16:28 > 1:16:33seat to be determined! And he will remain there until such time as
1:16:33 > 1:16:39someone out jumps him.
1:16:39 > 1:16:43someone out jumps him. Now Kot coming back out of the blanket. Have
1:16:43 > 1:16:48the conditions changed? He was part of the Polish team that took gold at
1:16:48 > 1:16:57the World Championships last year. So we have Kamil Stoch the defending
1:16:57 > 1:17:01Olympic China -- champion, Stefan Hula, and now Kot and when you put
1:17:01 > 1:17:07them in one team right now they're looking like a pretty unstoppable
1:17:07 > 1:17:12force. There is a team event at this Olympics and you would be wise at
1:17:12 > 1:17:20this point to back Poland. Now will the wind let him jump this time? Now
1:17:20 > 1:17:26is the answer to that. This is the frustration of ski jumping. You wait
1:17:26 > 1:17:31and wait but the wind will not let you go. When it turns red on the
1:17:31 > 1:17:36graphic that means that the wind is not acceptable for jumping. Not only
1:17:36 > 1:17:43wind speed but the cross wind as well. Crosswind obviously not safe
1:17:43 > 1:17:47because you need to make sure your competitors stay within the bounds
1:17:47 > 1:17:54of the course. But equally I know from the camera angles you see that
1:17:54 > 1:17:57ski jumping looks jaw-dropping in terms of how high up the athletes
1:17:57 > 1:18:03are but if you were to be there underneath, there are about ten, 15
1:18:03 > 1:18:07feet off the ground at all times but never really more like that. You're
1:18:07 > 1:18:12relatively close to the ground all the time. And these lines are little
1:18:12 > 1:18:18sprigs of pine and they are put in mind so that you have depth
1:18:18 > 1:18:23perception. You could look at those lines and that lets them know how
1:18:23 > 1:18:29far off the ground they are. Otherwise if you look at a bright
1:18:29 > 1:18:34white surface on its own it could be really difficult to actually know
1:18:34 > 1:18:39whether you are a couple of feet or ten feet above the ground. So that
1:18:39 > 1:18:43is how the ski jumpers know how close they are to landing, they use
1:18:43 > 1:18:56these little lines of pines. So we're waiting for the wind. Kot
1:18:56 > 1:19:04waiting for the wind and all those behind as well. Right the way
1:19:04 > 1:19:11through to Kamil Stoch and Stefan Hula as well. There is a waiting
1:19:11 > 1:19:15room, these guys are in there. And you just have to sit there and bide
1:19:15 > 1:19:21your time. It becomes a mental challenge even more so than it
1:19:21 > 1:19:26already is. Because you need to retain your focus. Great for him
1:19:26 > 1:19:33because he has already jumped. Peter Prevc can afford to spend as long as
1:19:33 > 1:19:37he likes hanging around in hot seat because his work is done. But all
1:19:37 > 1:19:47these guys out there ready to jump, they have to wait for however long.
1:19:47 > 1:19:54Making these movements to keep warm. Anything that you can do to keep
1:19:54 > 1:20:01warm. Even if it just means adjusting those bindings are little
1:20:01 > 1:20:06bit. And these are the coaches and they have nothing to do except to
1:20:06 > 1:20:10wait and waive those flags when they want their athlete to jump.
1:20:10 > 1:20:16Otherwise they stand in the cold and watch for years of their work fly
1:20:16 > 1:20:26past them and hope it works out.
1:20:27 > 1:20:28past them and hope it works out. So Kot, will the cats be let out of the
1:20:28 > 1:20:37bag? Time ticking away, expressionless. Athletes still
1:20:37 > 1:20:40warming up in the background. The coach waiting with the flag. As soon
1:20:40 > 1:20:48as he drops that, Kot gets to go and there it goes. At last Kot gets to
1:20:48 > 1:20:58go. Straight in the Lakes, locking the ankles. And the distance a
1:20:58 > 1:21:05little underwhelming after all of that. The Polish coach did not
1:21:05 > 1:21:10deliver that fist pump. Practically the first time I've seen that. So
1:21:10 > 1:21:18once again in slow motion, the timing so critical. Holding that
1:21:18 > 1:21:27form. Telemark landing. A good landing as well. The judges liked
1:21:27 > 1:21:45it. Good enough for fourth place right now. And we move on.
1:21:49 > 1:21:55Ito from Japan.
1:22:00 > 1:22:08Waiting for the green light. Another wind delay. The gentleman at the
1:22:08 > 1:22:14front leading the way in keeping warm! And Ito has nothing much more
1:22:14 > 1:22:18to do than just to keep moving, trying to keep warm and waiting for
1:22:18 > 1:22:24the wind delay to be over. This entire event has been affected this
1:22:24 > 1:22:27evening. Nothing like this on Thursday, very different wind
1:22:27 > 1:22:35conditions. And now at least -12 out there. So small wonder the
1:22:35 > 1:22:39competitors behind his right shoulder are jumping up and down.
1:22:39 > 1:22:46Here goes Ito.
1:22:46 > 1:22:50Here goes Ito. Just leaning to the right little bit at the end. A
1:22:50 > 1:22:54little bit short distance. I think he will be happy enough with that.
1:22:54 > 1:23:03102 metres. Not challenging for a medal but probably what you would
1:23:03 > 1:23:08have expected from Ito. He only came back from a shoulder dislocation a
1:23:08 > 1:23:14short time ago. That happened in November. One of many ski jumpers
1:23:14 > 1:23:18with an injury story to tell. Just had to lean into the landing a
1:23:18 > 1:23:40little bit. Into fifth place. Now next up
1:23:54 > 1:24:02will be McKenzie Boyd-Clowes. Coming from a country with virtually no ski
1:24:02 > 1:24:06jump heritage, Canada. This sport is about the Scandinavians, the Eastern
1:24:06 > 1:24:12Europeans and occasionally Japan. That is where you get most of the
1:24:12 > 1:24:16medallists from but Canada and the US are starting to produce athletes
1:24:16 > 1:24:20that can deliver on the Olympic stage and that is really exciting
1:24:20 > 1:24:25for ski jumping. Now you have much more genuine conversation. And this
1:24:25 > 1:24:32week McKenzie Boyd-Clowes has looked fantastic. They train together,
1:24:32 > 1:24:41Canada and the US, forming what they call unofficially team US and
1:24:41 > 1:24:49Canada. It seems to be paying off. Those red arrows again holding us
1:24:49 > 1:24:54up. The jury must be satisfied that it will turn blue and stay blue
1:24:54 > 1:24:59portly sometime. The coaches on the left trying to stay warm, shifting
1:24:59 > 1:25:07their feet. Peter Prevc hanging on to see if someone can touch that
1:25:07 > 1:25:15score.
1:25:16 > 1:25:21score. Now McKenzie Boyd-Clowes getting the green light.
1:25:22 > 1:25:29getting the green light. Not quite as good as his last job. I think
1:25:29 > 1:25:34that illustrates it was not quite so good. 98.5 metres. Disappointing for
1:25:34 > 1:25:40McKenzie Boyd-Clowes. He had a really good first-round jump. This
1:25:40 > 1:25:47time around could not quite deliver on it.
1:25:47 > 1:25:51And he will have two be content with being out of the medals but he is
1:25:51 > 1:25:57going to finish I would suggest about 20, 30 places higher in the
1:25:57 > 1:26:03standings and I think most people would have put him. Probably
1:26:03 > 1:26:14finishing around 20th overall. That is a solid effort.
1:26:14 > 1:26:17is a solid effort. So Olympic athlete from Russia, Kornilov. He
1:26:17 > 1:26:21used to have a lucky charm that he would touch, keep an eye out for
1:26:21 > 1:26:30that. 31 years old.
1:26:31 > 1:26:42that. 31 years old. 48th in Sochi, his home Olympics.
1:26:42 > 1:26:47The coach tells him hang on, we do not have the green light. It is
1:26:47 > 1:26:53frustrating.
1:26:53 > 1:26:56frustrating. Really frustrating for these guys because they have been
1:26:56 > 1:27:02working for four years to come here. And these gusts of wind are just
1:27:02 > 1:27:06coming out such an unfortunate moment for them. With this
1:27:06 > 1:27:12disruption in the rhythm, you just end up having to spend an extra
1:27:12 > 1:27:17couple of minutes at the top on that start gate contemplating what you
1:27:17 > 1:27:21need to do. And if you overthink this sport that can be quite
1:27:21 > 1:27:28damaging. Stefan Kraft was recently addressing his issues with
1:27:28 > 1:27:35inconsistency this season, he had a fantastic year in 2016, 2017 but he
1:27:35 > 1:27:40really struggled this season and he said it is because sometimes in ski
1:27:40 > 1:27:43jumping you worry too much about things and you lose the kind of
1:27:43 > 1:27:50natural feeling for it. A bit like golf, you start to think so much
1:27:50 > 1:27:54about an individual error that you lose your natural affinity and the
1:27:54 > 1:28:00moment you do that in ski jumping, the landings go, the take-offs and
1:28:00 > 1:28:04timing is so critical. If you're outdoor form it can be really
1:28:04 > 1:28:10difficult to get back it. -- if you are out or form. So if you need to
1:28:10 > 1:28:14spend an extra minute at the top of the start gate, that can have a real
1:28:14 > 1:28:22impact. Kornilov will try again. Watched the light on the bottom
1:28:22 > 1:28:30right hand side and there we go, it is green. The inn run, legs
1:28:30 > 1:28:35straight.
1:28:35 > 1:28:41straight. The landing was a little bit disorganised and the distance is
1:28:41 > 1:28:47no good. 96.5 metres.
1:28:53 > 1:29:00A little adjustment with the left arm.
1:29:00 > 1:29:07arm. Coming down into the landing. And the left ski just needed a
1:29:07 > 1:29:16couple of corrections. 95.7 overall. Probably not good enough to do
1:29:16 > 1:29:22anything like what he was looking for.
1:29:23 > 1:29:30for. Kasai, probably the world's most popular ski jumper, 45 years
1:29:30 > 1:29:36old. Olympics number eight, jumping in a final. Shock silver medallist
1:29:36 > 1:29:42at Sochi 2014 but probably not tonight. The Japanese fans do not
1:29:42 > 1:29:48care, they love him. He has talked about competing in the 2026 Winter
1:29:48 > 1:30:01Olympics. He would be 53. Imagine doing that at 53.
1:30:01 > 1:30:07Imagine doing that now, frankly! The concentration on his face is
1:30:07 > 1:30:09fantastic, eight Olympics, a new
1:30:09 > 1:30:09concentration on his face is fantastic, eight Olympics, a new
1:30:09 > 1:30:14record, nobody has done that at the Winter Olympics. In any sport. Did
1:30:14 > 1:30:17not even bother with a warm up jump tonight. He got straight into it.
1:30:17 > 1:30:22Only after he did that. It's the kind of privilege that it Olympics
1:30:22 > 1:30:30would give you. 98 point -- 90 9.4, not great in the scheme of things
1:30:30 > 1:30:37but he will get a great reception. We move on to Andreas Stjernen.
1:30:37 > 1:30:51Norway is a big ski jumping country. He has been a little short tonight.
1:30:51 > 1:30:57He has never really challenged in this final.
1:30:58 > 1:31:06this final. The second round, he may be a little low, I would suggest.
1:31:09 > 1:31:16It's incredibly late at night now, it is 11:46pm local time. As Hazel
1:31:16 > 1:31:21was saying earlier, day one is about to turn into Day two! Temperatures
1:31:21 > 1:31:31at about minus 12. 111.3. Slightly lower than his first-round score.
1:31:31 > 1:31:35It's enough to put him in third for now. What an impressive man this
1:31:35 > 1:31:40was! He's only 21 years old, and he delivered such a stunning job,
1:31:40 > 1:31:46particularly for an American ski jumper, Kevin Bickner, they look so
1:31:46 > 1:31:51much better than they have done four and eight years ago. The American
1:31:51 > 1:31:56unit have been so exciting to watch. Consistency will get you up there.
1:31:56 > 1:32:01Can he deliver a second great jump? Watch the green line... It doesn't
1:32:01 > 1:32:06come for us.
1:32:07 > 1:32:11come for us. The first job was really fantastic, the second is what
1:32:11 > 1:32:20we ordinarily expect. A reminder to everyone watching, they come back
1:32:20 > 1:32:31later in the Olympics. It is a slightly larger hill and a slightly
1:32:31 > 1:32:35longer distance. Nobody here is going home after this. All
1:32:35 > 1:32:40competitors have one more individual event to come. Even though Kevin
1:32:40 > 1:32:45Bickner is out of the medals tonight he can take his momentum from that
1:32:45 > 1:32:50incredible first-round jump and transfer it to the large later on.
1:32:50 > 1:32:58Back to Norway, waiting for the green light, Daniel Andre Tande. It
1:32:58 > 1:33:04flicks the back of his hair, the wind, as the gust swirls. It is -12
1:33:04 > 1:33:07degrees. It doesn't take into account the wind chill, I would
1:33:07 > 1:33:15estimate that we are looking at... Probably about -16 and -17 where
1:33:15 > 1:33:20Daniel Andre Tande is sat right now. You get to know about that, on your
1:33:20 > 1:33:24face! You can see the problem, the wind in the middle, about five or
1:33:24 > 1:33:32six metres per second, that is why the jury have paused. It looks like
1:33:32 > 1:33:37Daniel Andre Tande could be sat there a while. Tande is the man I
1:33:37 > 1:33:43told you about who was afraid of heights. It is unlikely for a ski
1:33:43 > 1:33:47jumper to be afraid of heights but when he was painting his grandmother
1:33:47 > 1:33:51's house, standing on a ladder on the first floor looking down, his
1:33:51 > 1:33:56fear was so paralysing it would take in 30 minutes to get off. So he used
1:33:56 > 1:34:01ski jumping as a kid to get over it. Now he jumps in the Olympics! That's
1:34:01 > 1:34:14one way of getting over it... What a jump! Tande delivers. From his
1:34:14 > 1:34:20grandmother's ladder to an incredible Olympic jump for Daniel
1:34:20 > 1:34:31Andre Tande. An excellent distance. 111.5 metres. Just short of what we
1:34:31 > 1:34:40saw before from Peter Prevc.
1:34:40 > 1:34:42saw before from Peter Prevc. I think we will see Daniel Andre Tande going
1:34:42 > 1:34:46into the lead, and Peter Prevc could move into the hot seat. He is
1:34:46 > 1:34:51impressed, Daniel Andre Tande is very impressed! Judges, are you with
1:34:51 > 1:35:04us? They love it! That's the overall title to watch for. The new leader,
1:35:04 > 1:35:11Daniel Andre Tande. A handshake to Peter Prevc. That is the marker laid
1:35:11 > 1:35:19down for the remaining 11
1:35:19 > 1:35:21down for the remaining 11 or 12, now, just 20 years old from
1:35:21 > 1:35:25Slovenia, Bartol. He's having the same problems as everyone else, he
1:35:25 > 1:35:31has two rate for the green light -- to wait for the green light. There
1:35:31 > 1:35:35are ways you can mitigate this. If the wind becomes too much of a
1:35:35 > 1:35:40factor, the gate you see him on now, they can actually move. They can
1:35:40 > 1:35:44move the gate up or down. Going down, it shrinks the amount of in
1:35:44 > 1:35:49run that you have. That is essentially the gap between the gate
1:35:49 > 1:35:53and where you take off. With less speed coming down because the gate
1:35:53 > 1:35:59is lower down from you cannot go so fast and basically it is safer. They
1:35:59 > 1:36:06may adjust the gate but right now it hasn't happened. He is back out
1:36:06 > 1:36:18again, waiting for the coach to see if he has the green light.
1:36:19 > 1:36:26There is the coach, a time-honoured
1:36:26 > 1:36:33ski tradition to have a flag that like that that you let drop.
1:36:33 > 1:36:38like that that you let drop. It's a red light again. Another weight in
1:36:38 > 1:36:44the cold for him. The officials will come down with a blanket. I feel
1:36:44 > 1:36:48like a range of fetching blankets have been used this evening! And in
1:36:48 > 1:36:54the waiting room, they are just trying to stay awake. It is almost
1:36:54 > 1:37:00midnight!
1:37:00 > 1:37:04midnight! It is tough, no matter where you are, on the top or in the
1:37:04 > 1:37:09waiting room. Frankly right now, it is tough to be a fan at the bottom!
1:37:09 > 1:37:22Maybe not so tough, if you are in the hot seat, Daniel Andre Tande.
1:37:22 > 1:37:29Helmet off, let those locks experience of the
1:37:30 > 1:37:33experience of the -- let those locks experience of the Chile Mack South
1:37:33 > 1:37:40Korean air! Here we go again, the windy situation... It is close to
1:37:40 > 1:37:45going red. As soon as it is above four metres per second, it becomes
1:37:45 > 1:37:55an issue. They are going to try. Tilen Bartol of Slovenia, he settles
1:37:55 > 1:38:03in. 119 points in his first round. Well-placed.
1:38:03 > 1:38:07Well-placed. He would need around about 123 points. To go ahead of
1:38:07 > 1:38:13Daniel Andre Tande. That's essentially what he scored. Here he
1:38:13 > 1:38:18goes...
1:38:21 > 1:38:27goes... It isn't going to be 123 points, I tell you that right now.
1:38:27 > 1:38:30The distance wasn't quite there. 102 metres, that is down about nine
1:38:30 > 1:38:36metres short of what we just saw Daniel Andre Tande do. No shame on
1:38:36 > 1:38:41Tilen Bartol, he's only 20 years old. He wasn't picked as a contender
1:38:41 > 1:38:46here really. If he gets in the top 15, a top 20 finish, it would easily
1:38:46 > 1:38:50be the biggest result of his career. 23rd in the World Cup rankings right
1:38:50 > 1:38:57now.
1:38:57 > 1:39:08now. He goes fifth for now. That brings up a man you have seen having
1:39:08 > 1:39:16almost too much fun this evening, Simon Ammann, two
1:39:17 > 1:39:23Simon Ammann, two Olympics gold medals at Salt Lake City in 2002. It
1:39:23 > 1:39:27all went wrong in Sochi. He thought about walking away. No big results
1:39:27 > 1:39:33for years. He came back and he made his way to Pyeongchang. He had so
1:39:33 > 1:39:36much fun in qualifying in the first round but if you were watching his
1:39:36 > 1:39:39first-round jump earlier, he was the happiest man alive. If he does it
1:39:39 > 1:39:44again, he may actually have a shot at a medal here. 119.4 points in he
1:39:44 > 1:39:53first round. If you can get a 125 year, it isn't out of the question,
1:39:53 > 1:40:02but he would push himself into first place. -- 125 here. If anybody can
1:40:02 > 1:40:09do that, it is Simon Ammann, a man who has so much experience of
1:40:09 > 1:40:14winning gold medals. Under pressure. Pressure like this. The pressure of
1:40:14 > 1:40:19sitting at the top and waiting for the wind to be right. And bringing
1:40:19 > 1:40:27home an Olympic medal. What is interesting about landings, you have
1:40:27 > 1:40:30seen Telemark Blandings. It doesn't matter which led you land on, the
1:40:30 > 1:40:35right leg or the left leg can be forward but ordinarily ski jumpers
1:40:35 > 1:40:41choose one and stick with it. For Simon Ammann... You can see them
1:40:41 > 1:40:46moving the gate, they are going down. I will come back to Simon
1:40:46 > 1:40:50Ammann in a minute, they shorten the Enron, meaning you don't get so much
1:40:50 > 1:40:56speed and it mitigates the wind effect. You will see on Simon
1:40:56 > 1:41:00Ammann's score there will be a gate adjustment, because he did not have
1:41:00 > 1:41:05as much speed and he could not go as far, we will give him some points to
1:41:05 > 1:41:14compensate. 3.2 gate compensation points. However he does, he will get
1:41:14 > 1:41:19those extra points. Simon Ammann, at the 1998 Olympics where he started,
1:41:19 > 1:41:24he used to land on his right knee. Then he had trouble with it so he
1:41:24 > 1:41:31switched to his left knee and won all his with it so he switched to
1:41:31 > 1:41:35his left knee and won all his on he switched to his left knee and won
1:41:35 > 1:41:38all his on the left. Now, he has tried to switch back, and he is in a
1:41:38 > 1:41:49no man's land. Pulling a face, and shuffling back again.
1:41:49 > 1:41:53shuffling back again. We use a golf analogy, messing with the parting
1:41:53 > 1:41:57strategy. If you win five majors and go if you years without it, then you
1:41:57 > 1:42:02have an entirely new way of putting, that is what Simon Ammann is doing.
1:42:02 > 1:42:10The talk before these Olympics was that his landings were a mess but
1:42:10 > 1:42:14now the four-time Olympic champion has turned up, looking sensational
1:42:14 > 1:42:19all week long. I cannot wait. When we get the wind under control
1:42:19 > 1:42:22eventually, I cannot wait to see this jump. If Simon Ammann lands it,
1:42:22 > 1:42:28we could have a story! But it is going to have to be big. Very, very
1:42:28 > 1:42:37big. We will still have after him the best part of ten more to come.
1:42:37 > 1:42:42Before we know who is going to be crowned the first ski jump Olympic
1:42:42 > 1:42:48champion of Pyeongchang 2018. Look at the view, imagine being there!
1:42:48 > 1:42:54And thinking about -- Simon Ammann thinking of sliding out, you can see
1:42:54 > 1:42:58him with the gold and black helmet. You reach about 55 mph going down.
1:42:58 > 1:43:03By the time you land, it is almost 60 mph, and in contact with the
1:43:03 > 1:43:10crowd. If you are wondering how you get into this, on the left of what
1:43:10 > 1:43:15you are looking at now, there are four or five Bunny hills, for want
1:43:15 > 1:43:20of a better phrase. They gradually go up in size. You start at ten
1:43:20 > 1:43:25metres, then 30, then 50, then 100, and you gradually build up. So
1:43:25 > 1:43:30eight-year-olds do not have to face this if they want to get into ski
1:43:30 > 1:43:35jumping, it's not very practical. You go to the much smaller hill and
1:43:35 > 1:43:38you do a small jump with virtually no danger attached to it. You build
1:43:38 > 1:43:45on your skills and become a ski jumper. Because it is so rare in the
1:43:45 > 1:43:49UK and the facilities do not exist, sometimes it is hard to imagine
1:43:49 > 1:43:53where ski jumpers come from from other countries. But it is gradually
1:43:53 > 1:43:58built up, over gradual increases on the Hill. There have been ski jumps
1:43:58 > 1:44:04in the UK. In the 1950s, 60 tonnes of snow were brought to Edinburgh
1:44:04 > 1:44:08from Norway. There was a jump created for a Scottish championship
1:44:08 > 1:44:11which apparently brought in about 10,000 fans. Hampstead Heath had a
1:44:11 > 1:44:17ski jump back in the day, they had one for a year in the 1950s.
1:44:17 > 1:44:22Manchester had won in 1960 over reddish Vale. It had 40 foot of
1:44:22 > 1:44:26scaffolding surrounding it. There was a ski jump built at Wembley in
1:44:26 > 1:44:331961. But other than that, since the 1980s, there hasn't been anywhere in
1:44:33 > 1:44:36the UK. There was talk five or ten years ago that they would build one
1:44:36 > 1:44:43in Wrexham. Naturally. It was going to cost about £7 million for a new
1:44:43 > 1:44:46national ski jump facility and needless to say, that did not
1:44:46 > 1:44:51happen.
1:45:18 > 1:45:25STUDIO: Simon Ammann with a blanket on, not sure of that will do good,
1:45:25 > 1:45:29to be honest. These guys on the biggest guys, don't carry a lot of
1:45:29 > 1:45:34weight, there's not much of them, they will get cold standing around
1:45:34 > 1:45:39up there. They probably will. Weight is an interesting thing in ski
1:45:39 > 1:45:42jumping, the reason these guys are not big is because the lie you are
1:45:42 > 1:45:47the better you find your aerodynamics and the further you go.
1:45:47 > 1:45:51But there are rules brought into the sport to make sure you cannot be too
1:45:51 > 1:45:54underweight because in previous years people tried to subsist on as
1:45:54 > 1:45:59little as 200 calories a day to try to stay as light as possible. It
1:45:59 > 1:46:03just wasn't healthy, so now your body mass index has to be above a
1:46:03 > 1:46:07certain point, otherwise they trim your skis, literally trimmed them
1:46:07 > 1:46:11back so you have smaller wings and cannot get the advantage. So weight
1:46:11 > 1:46:25has been a big issue in this sport. But that blanket, I
1:46:27 > 1:46:30feel like blankets might also be an issue in the sport because if I was
1:46:30 > 1:46:32up there right now I would be wanting a blanket possibly ten times
1:46:32 > 1:46:35the size of that cocooned around me. I don't know about body-mass index
1:46:35 > 1:46:38upon the top of the ramp, the un-run, but I am impressed by the
1:46:38 > 1:46:40number of people down there, it is gone midnight, officially day two,
1:46:40 > 1:46:46and the last bus back to Seoul has gone, it is impressive. It is
1:46:46 > 1:46:49impressive, the atmosphere has been fantastic. It must be hard for the
1:46:49 > 1:46:53athletes on the hill to look down below and see there are still
1:46:53 > 1:46:57hundreds of fans lined up because like you say, where we are right
1:46:57 > 1:47:01now, it is not like the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are taking place in
1:47:01 > 1:47:05a city. This is in the mountains, there is a small resort here, but
1:47:05 > 1:47:10you are by no means next to an urban metropolis. You are in the sticks by
1:47:10 > 1:47:15the standards of recent Winter Olympics, so very few spectators
1:47:15 > 1:47:23here will be anywhere near anything they could call home, absolutely.
1:47:23 > 1:47:26Now, we might have a little bit of action. Let's see if Simon Ammann
1:47:26 > 1:47:30can get away this time.
1:47:35 > 1:47:39Got away per that orange light to turn green, thousands of people in
1:47:39 > 1:47:42the arena, millions around the world is willing that Lauren should like
1:47:42 > 1:47:50to just turn green. Go on! Go on! -- that orange light to turn green.
1:47:50 > 1:47:56It's not looking good, is it?
1:47:56 > 1:47:58It's not looking good, is it? Simon Ammann, if anyone has the mental
1:47:58 > 1:48:02capacity to deal with this, he has, but boy will he want to get this
1:48:02 > 1:48:09jump under way in the near future. It's red again, look at the coach's
1:48:09 > 1:48:15face! Oh! This is stressful.
1:48:24 > 1:48:31Breathe out. Simon Ammann will sit there again. He knows how to wait,
1:48:31 > 1:48:35Simon Ammann, he was champion in 2002 en route to the double and
1:48:35 > 1:48:38waited eight years to return to do it again in Vancouver when he took
1:48:38 > 1:48:43another goal, with a double double at that point, so he is waiting a
1:48:43 > 1:48:47very long time, but in all seriousness, is there a danger as he
1:48:47 > 1:48:50tries for a sixth time to get a second jump completed that this
1:48:50 > 1:48:57event might not be done tonight?I don't know, is the answer to that. I
1:48:57 > 1:49:03think they will go to the end, they have ten more to go, and it would
1:49:03 > 1:49:07seem an awkward time to have to make that decision. If they do make that
1:49:07 > 1:49:11decision they would have to rule out this entire round then go from there
1:49:11 > 1:49:14and either reschedule or take the first-round result, but it looks
1:49:14 > 1:49:18like we will get under way, and here goes Simon Ammann with a cheer from
1:49:18 > 1:49:22the fans because finally there is some action. How will this jump
1:49:22 > 1:49:27look? It's good, but not as good as it needed to be. He is happy because
1:49:27 > 1:49:37he is just glad to be back, and boy, as
1:49:37 > 1:49:40as he put in some impressive performances. I don't think we would
1:49:40 > 1:49:43see him with a medal around his neck again. 16 years after he won double
1:49:43 > 1:49:45gold in salt lake city, eight years after double gold in Vancouver 2010.
1:49:45 > 1:49:49But Simon Ammann is easily going to win the medal for the happiest man
1:49:49 > 1:49:55in the arena tonight, even if someone else wins gold. He had a
1:49:55 > 1:49:59smile on his face before he even landed. It's just happy to be back.
1:49:59 > 1:50:04It has been a long time for a four-time Olympic champion since he
1:50:04 > 1:50:07did anything of note on the world circuit, it was 2011 the last time
1:50:07 > 1:50:16he picked up a major medal. His score is 236.6, goes into second
1:50:16 > 1:50:19place. I'm confident that school will be overtaken but you never
1:50:19 > 1:50:24know, the way the conditions are and these weights at the top. Anything
1:50:24 > 1:50:28could happen, and at the moment, Simon Ammann could be on track to
1:50:28 > 1:50:35get another Olympic medal, and that would
1:50:36 > 1:50:45would equal the 1980s and 1990s finishers.
1:50:46 > 1:50:54finishers. But there is a long way to go. Green light. Flagged down.
1:50:54 > 1:50:58Finally, a little bit of consistent action, and Robert Johansson makes
1:50:58 > 1:51:14his way down. Oh! What a jump! What a jump! And the aerodynamics of the
1:51:14 > 1:51:18moustache paid off because that is a fantastic jump from Robert Johansson
1:51:18 > 1:51:24of Norway. He was only 19th in qualifying, looked like he wouldn't
1:51:24 > 1:51:27pull out much here at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The
1:51:27 > 1:51:30only member of the Norwegian team that doesn't have a World Cup win
1:51:30 > 1:51:36this season. I think he's about to take the lead. From his team-mate,
1:51:36 > 1:51:42Daniel Andre Tande. Phenomenal jump. LAUGHTER
1:51:42 > 1:51:48Daniel Andre Tande. Phenomenal jump. LAUGHTER. Disposed of the normal
1:51:48 > 1:51:53fist bumps. High fives. Tande I think knows that he will probably be
1:51:53 > 1:52:00kicked out of the hot seat. Fabulous jump, 249.7, Robert Johansson into
1:52:00 > 1:52:07first place, and we are starting to run out of people still to come.
1:52:07 > 1:52:15Ryoyu Kobayashi, the younger Kobayashi brother.
1:52:15 > 1:52:18Kobayashi brother. Oh, it's good, too. Not quite as far as it may be
1:52:18 > 1:52:22needed to be, but now we are into the business end of this
1:52:22 > 1:52:26competition, the wind letting us get a few jumps in, and we are starting
1:52:26 > 1:52:30to feel the excitement of an Olympic final that we always know could go
1:52:30 > 1:52:42any way of eight or ten ways. Good, straight form. Love that facial
1:52:42 > 1:52:45expression, look at that, concentration. Almost gulping in the
1:52:45 > 1:52:52scenery in front of him. Down into the Telemark. It is a good jump. I
1:52:52 > 1:52:59don't know if it will be good enough. It's a good jump.
1:53:02 > 1:53:09It is his Olympic debut, his brother's Olympic debut. 240.8, into
1:53:09 > 1:53:12third for now. That unseats Simon Ammann, no medal for Samantha man
1:53:12 > 1:53:21here. -- no medal for Simon Ammann. At the moment one, Robert Johansson,
1:53:21 > 1:53:27two Tande, the Norwegian, and Ryoyu Kobayashi in number three. Now Karl
1:53:27 > 1:53:31Geiger, surprise German sensation. He is a well-known German ski
1:53:31 > 1:53:38jumper,
1:53:38 > 1:53:42jumper, opportunities have been handed to people like Karl Geiger by
1:53:42 > 1:53:49injury. He is taking that opportunity. Watch this jump. Good,
1:53:49 > 1:53:58solid jump. Not enough, I think, to get into the medals. But he, as a
1:53:58 > 1:54:0224-year-old, ranked 16th in the world, is not expected to be
1:54:02 > 1:54:10operating at the top end. He's having a great Olympics so far.
1:54:15 > 1:54:23Distance of 105 metres on this jump. Couldn't see anything massively
1:54:23 > 1:54:25wrong from a judging point of view, I think it's just the distance
1:54:25 > 1:54:34that's going to disappoint him. The judging scores are good, it is that
1:54:34 > 1:54:38distance, 236.7, more importantly, fourth place, he just misses out.
1:54:38 > 1:54:44Robert Johansson gets to hang out in that hot seat. Markus Eisenbichler,
1:54:44 > 1:54:49another German. This man does have major event form, medal in the world
1:54:49 > 1:54:59-- bronze medal in the World Championships last year.
1:54:59 > 1:55:04Again, it's pushing, but it's not maybe enough. Oh, another three or
1:55:04 > 1:55:14four on that... 106.5 will be a little lower than he needed. We have
1:55:14 > 1:55:18had 113.5 from Robert Johansson. That is the target to beat at this
1:55:18 > 1:55:23point. If anyone goes above 113.5 at this point they are getting
1:55:23 > 1:55:27themselves probably an Olympic medal, possibly an Olympic gold, but
1:55:27 > 1:55:34when you get back to 106 like this one, a bit of an iffy landing, that
1:55:34 > 1:55:40won't do it from Markus Eisenbichler.
1:55:41 > 1:55:52Eisenbichler. Fourth place. Stefan Kraft, the world champion. World
1:55:52 > 1:55:57champion in both events, normal hill and large hill. Phenomenal 2016-17,
1:55:57 > 1:56:03struggled this year, now would be a very good time to come out of that.
1:56:03 > 1:56:10He has to wait for the wind. He would be the third Austrian to win
1:56:10 > 1:56:14an Olympic normal hill title if he can pull out something fantastic
1:56:14 > 1:56:22when he gets back green light. -- get back green light. Still here,
1:56:22 > 1:56:30phenomenal for those fans. Well past midnight local time. All these
1:56:30 > 1:56:37delays, -12, Winter Olympics fans, love them! So, we will wait for
1:56:37 > 1:56:41Stefan Kraft. He was second when they held the World Cup on this hill
1:56:41 > 1:56:49a year ago as a test event. So he has form here as the world champion.
1:56:49 > 1:56:56He holds the ski flying world record, once travelled 253.5 metres
1:56:56 > 1:57:01in the air. Imagine that! We are looking at 100 metres over this
1:57:01 > 1:57:08Hill. That is more than double the record he holds. And now he has the
1:57:08 > 1:57:18green light, what does he have here? Again, it's not quite up there, and
1:57:18 > 1:57:23he slaps his hands down onto his lies and knows the world champion is
1:57:23 > 1:57:27not going to become Olympic champion. -- onto his legs. Not
1:57:27 > 1:57:37tonight. 103 metres on that jump will not be enough. He can produce
1:57:37 > 1:57:42the most artistic, perfectly styled jump in the world. But it's not
1:57:42 > 1:57:48going to get him on the podium if he doesn't jump far enough. That is the
1:57:48 > 1:57:51reaction from the coach, on the verge of tossing that flag away.
1:57:51 > 1:57:55Stefan Kraft, eighth place, that is a phenomenally disappointing jump.
1:57:55 > 1:58:00What did I tell you? It's not his season.
1:58:03 > 1:58:10We are running out of people who can unseat Robert Johansson. One of them
1:58:10 > 1:58:17is Andreas Wellinger, one qualifying, 124.9 points from his
1:58:17 > 1:58:24first round. This looks like it could be good! It's long. It looked
1:58:24 > 1:58:34like it might be golden. 113.5. That is exactly the same distance as
1:58:34 > 1:58:41Robert Johansson. Wellinger held a 5-point advantage from the first
1:58:41 > 1:58:45round. As long as the judges don't see anything wrong wrong with this,
1:58:45 > 1:58:50and it
1:58:51 > 1:58:53and it looked good, into that Telemark, maybe taking an extra
1:58:53 > 1:58:57second two to get in there. Beautifully held, the coaches all in
1:58:57 > 1:59:07favour of that. -- the coach is all in favour. And Andreas Wellinger, I
1:59:07 > 1:59:12think, is going to go first, there he is, first place, Andreas
1:59:12 > 1:59:19Wellinger, with only four more to watch. The first of which is his
1:59:19 > 1:59:24team-mate Richard Freitag. He is the German the Germans thought was going
1:59:24 > 1:59:28to win. Suddenly you have Andreas Wellinger to deal with. And that is
1:59:28 > 1:59:36not going to push Wellinger off the top. Richard Freitag... He looked so
1:59:36 > 1:59:42good at the start of the season, and in the last few weeks, his form has
1:59:42 > 1:59:46evaporated.
1:59:46 > 1:59:52Don't get me wrong, still an exceptionally good job but at the
1:59:52 > 1:59:55time he really needed to push Bourday. You see him land, in case
1:59:55 > 1:59:58you're wondering where they measure it from, it is the middle point of
1:59:58 > 2:00:03the feet. If you land with your feet together, you measure from the boot
2:00:03 > 2:00:11laces. If you land with your feet apart, that is the landing distance.
2:00:11 > 2:00:15Richard Freitag misses out on a medal and he goes sixth. We have
2:00:15 > 2:00:23athletes remaining. -- three athletes remaining. Johann Andre
2:00:23 > 2:00:38Forfang. 22. And all the pressure on the world. -- in the world.
2:00:38 > 2:00:43Consistency has been his issue all along. He has beaten Kamil Stoch
2:00:43 > 2:00:48before. He knows how to win, even at this young age. He has the green
2:00:48 > 2:00:56light.
2:00:56 > 2:01:01light. Has it got the length? It's good, but is it good enough? It may
2:01:01 > 2:01:13have fallen short. Might have fallen short. 109.5 metres. He had a
2:01:13 > 2:01:181-point advantage over Wellinger from the first round. I don't know
2:01:18 > 2:01:23that is going to be enough. This is where your style points coming. It's
2:01:23 > 2:01:28possible to win with a jump that isn't as far as your Bibles, if it
2:01:28 > 2:01:31looked better and the judges liked it more. -- as your rivals. It's
2:01:31 > 2:01:38happened before and will happen again but you don't want to rely on
2:01:38 > 2:01:49it. And it is second place, Forfang. Wellinger has 29.5 three. So far in
2:01:49 > 2:01:53front but now we have two incredible jumpers to come, starting with the
2:01:53 > 2:02:01man defending his Olympic title, Kamil Stoch. 125.9, from the first
2:02:01 > 2:02:06round. He needs an even bigger jump now.
2:02:10 > 2:02:21I don't think he got it. I think Wellinger might hold onto this.
2:02:21 > 2:02:27Kamil Stoch had been looking to become the most successful Polish
2:02:27 > 2:02:34Winter Olympian in history. Just needed that one more gold medal to
2:02:34 > 2:02:37do it. Would have been the first athlete to win consecutive men's
2:02:37 > 2:02:48normal hill gold. I think that won't be what he needs.
2:02:53 > 2:03:01That tells you that Andreas Wellinger thinks he's probably safe.
2:03:01 > 2:03:09And he is, and he is, there is the result. Not even a medal for the
2:03:09 > 2:03:13defending Olympic champion. What an unpredictable sport this is.
2:03:13 > 2:03:20Wellinger knows he is one jump away, one jump from being an Olympic
2:03:20 > 2:03:29medallist and it is this man, Stefan Hula, for Poland, jumping for gold.
2:03:29 > 2:03:38Into the air. How long is it? Does it have the length? Oh, it's close!
2:03:38 > 2:03:46I don't think is going to be enough. 105.5 metres, surely not enough.
2:03:46 > 2:03:50They have to wait for the scores. Stefan Hula needed more. Such a
2:03:50 > 2:03:57phenomenal first jump. He has a six, seven point lead almost from the
2:03:57 > 2:04:02first round. But did he need more?
2:04:07 > 2:04:11His form looks good all the way down, almost motionless, bringing
2:04:11 > 2:04:15the legs together. It is a fine Telemark landing as well. But is the
2:04:15 > 2:04:26distance enough? I don't think it is.
2:04:26 > 2:04:33is. It's nowhere near enough, Stefan Hula is fifth, 248.8. And your
2:04:33 > 2:04:38Olympic champion is Germany's Andreas Wellinger. Everyone thought
2:04:38 > 2:04:46his team-mate Richard Freitag would be the gold medallist. Wellinger won
2:04:46 > 2:04:49qualifying and announced himself, saying he didn't mind the pressure
2:04:49 > 2:04:56and he came back and back again with phenomenal jumps. And he is your
2:04:56 > 2:05:01Pyeongchang 2018 men's normal hill Olympic champion, the first German
2:05:01 > 2:05:10to do that since the mid-19 90s. A series of sensational jumps in the
2:05:10 > 2:05:15trickiest of conditions. The Silver Medal, to Norway's Johann Andre
2:05:15 > 2:05:20Forfang.
2:05:20 > 2:05:24Forfang. Bronze, Robert Johansson. No one could have predicted that.
2:05:24 > 2:05:30The world champion is off the podium, the Olympic champion is off
2:05:30 > 2:05:34the podium. Wellinger, the 22-year-old who, four years ago,
2:05:34 > 2:05:38ruined his first round jump and took himself out of the reckoning in
2:05:38 > 2:05:46Sochi, comes back and delivers. He is the Olympic champion. The Germans
2:05:46 > 2:05:54are on the medal table. STUDIO: They are, and in a big way. That is
2:05:54 > 2:06:00Germany's first gold medal in the normal hill
2:06:01 > 2:06:04normal hill since 1984, so a very long time to wait and it's been
2:06:04 > 2:06:08worth the wait for those German fans. Either that or they are just
2:06:08 > 2:06:16cold and are just trying to keep warm! May be a bit of both. Germany
2:06:16 > 2:06:19winning gold, Poland, bereft because their top two haven't managed to do
2:06:19 > 2:06:19it.
2:06:19 > 2:06:23their top two haven't managed to do it. The time-out there is now 20
2:06:23 > 2:06:28past midnight! I've been at four kills tournaments over the years for
2:06:28 > 2:06:31ski jumping and I've never known anything to last this long, way
2:06:31 > 2:06:37beyond midnight. Worth it for Germany. Some of you will be binge
2:06:37 > 2:06:41watching the Winter Olympics into the small hours. No need, it appears
2:06:41 > 2:06:46they are willing to turn night into day for us. That's what we've got
2:06:46 > 2:06:52and that has put our timing is way off and no complaints, great to see
2:06:52 > 2:06:58some live sport. But we have quite a bit to catch up with, especially
2:06:58 > 2:07:02snowboarding and ice hockey. It is the snowboarding first because it
2:07:02 > 2:07:07made its Winter Olympics debut in Nagano in 1998. The parallel giant
2:07:07 > 2:07:10slalom we were watching them but we had to wait a long time before
2:07:10 > 2:07:16Saatchi, four years ago, to see slopestyle, co-opted from the very
2:07:16 > 2:07:23trendy ex-games and it has made a huge impression. The riders are
2:07:23 > 2:07:27writing a series of rails and kickers to impress the judges and in
2:07:27 > 2:07:38Sochi Billy Morgan became the first rider to take part in the sport.
2:07:40 > 2:07:44Is this going to be a last Olympics? Before the Olympics came up I
2:07:44 > 2:07:51thought this was going to be my last one but I'm hoping that it separates
2:07:51 > 2:07:55the slopestyle and the Biggar and I can do the big air. If they separate
2:07:55 > 2:08:05them I could just do the big air. You did a triple backslide Rodeo,
2:08:05 > 2:08:11the first man to do that.My God!It stands to reason that big air is
2:08:11 > 2:08:15your discipline. When that was included in the Olympics did you rub
2:08:15 > 2:08:20your hands like this, saying oh, yes?Not really because I thought I
2:08:20 > 2:08:24had done the quad, which was amazing but it was also the scariest thing
2:08:24 > 2:08:30I've ever done.Was it?Because it was on such a specific jump I
2:08:30 > 2:08:33thought I hope I don't have to do it under pressure. Stoked to get it
2:08:33 > 2:08:38done. And the big air in the Olympics, I'll have to give it
2:08:38 > 2:08:45another go.Is it still scary?Yeah, well, I only did it once and I
2:08:45 > 2:08:50haven't done it since. We keep coming out with the objective to try
2:08:50 > 2:08:56it again. But we haven't had a jump big enough yet or I've been too
2:08:56 > 2:09:00scared, one of the two!Are you conscious that you've changed
2:09:00 > 2:09:08snowboarding?I'm glad I did it and got the world's first title but I
2:09:08 > 2:09:12wish I'd kept the gates closed for longer because now there is a few
2:09:12 > 2:09:18guys who have done it.
2:09:18 > 2:09:20guys who have done it.How is the build-up to this Olympics compared
2:09:20 > 2:09:25to the last?I think it's been quite similar. We are always chasing the
2:09:25 > 2:09:31new tricks, trying to up snowboarding as much as possible so
2:09:31 > 2:09:35it is the same goal. The tricks have moved on a lot since then.A lot of
2:09:35 > 2:09:40the guys go to the gym and the airbags and things like that to
2:09:40 > 2:09:49train. You do power Acquah balance -- power acrobatic balance snow
2:09:49 > 2:09:55jump, you mix it up.I mix it up as much as possible. I was an acrobat
2:09:55 > 2:09:58when I was younger and I tried to bring it into my training now and I
2:09:58 > 2:10:05do a lot of kicking up in the air. It is like doing squats but instead
2:10:05 > 2:10:11I'm doing leg pressing a human, so there is more balanced. I try and do
2:10:11 > 2:10:14a lot of gymnastics and trampolining, in the gym, skating a
2:10:14 > 2:10:21bit, and I do some acro to keep everything going.
2:10:26 > 2:10:30What can we expect from you in Pyeongchang? You can expect me to
2:10:30 > 2:10:36try my hardest.That's the answer! And I will, I'll try my hardest. I
2:10:36 > 2:10:41don't like to think about whether I can get a medal because it is such a
2:10:41 > 2:10:45role of the dice on the day. If everybody falls over, I'll
2:10:45 > 2:10:49definitely win but if everybody lands it makes it a harder game, you
2:10:49 > 2:10:55know.How excited are you about the inclusion of big air? It's epic, two
2:10:55 > 2:11:00chances to show off what we can do. We've always done the big air as
2:11:00 > 2:11:03well, it hasn't been sprung on us and we've got to suddenly learn new
2:11:03 > 2:11:08things. I'm glad they've included it and given us a chance to show what
2:11:08 > 2:11:15we can do.Billy had a top ten finish in Sochi in slopestyle, he's
2:11:15 > 2:11:20better event is the big air. With Bradford's Jamie Nicholls, who was
2:11:20 > 2:11:24sixth, they are back for more and we have another member of the team,
2:11:24 > 2:11:29Bedford's Rowan Coultas. Motivated after watching Jamie Jones claiming
2:11:29 > 2:11:35Britain's first ever women Jon Snow in the women's no style four years
2:11:35 > 2:11:39ago -- on snow. Two qualification runs today with a possible final
2:11:39 > 2:11:44looming tomorrow. Phoenix Park is the most easterly of the Mountain
2:11:44 > 2:11:50Cluster venues in the Gangwon Mountains, the so-called Korean Alps
2:11:50 > 2:11:53and it is where most of the snowboard and freestyle skiing
2:11:53 > 2:11:57events are staged. It can be pretty windy and Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood
2:11:57 > 2:12:04are looking at what they are facing. Welcome to the slopestyle course in
2:12:04 > 2:12:08Phoenix Park. There's almost no natural snowfall in career meaning
2:12:08 > 2:12:13the course has been constructive almost from man-made snow.Because
2:12:13 > 2:12:15of that it has incredible consistency which has enabled the
2:12:15 > 2:12:19course designers to create the most aesthetically pleasing course we've
2:12:19 > 2:12:27seen. It looks like it's been made from marble. There are six different
2:12:27 > 2:12:34modules. Let's have a look. The first three modules are the rails
2:12:34 > 2:12:41but they aren't the standard options, we've got rainbows, boxes,
2:12:41 > 2:12:45Hitchings, double kinks. Without question the most creative course
2:12:45 > 2:12:49we've ever seen.Because of that the judges are going to have a real
2:12:49 > 2:12:54headache, so many choices and options through the course that
2:12:54 > 2:13:04cater to every style of rider. All of these features are massive.
2:13:04 > 2:13:06of these features are massive. This is almost a bonus feature for the
2:13:06 > 2:13:13riders, halfway between the rails and the kickers, the double dip.It
2:13:13 > 2:13:16offers the riders something completely unique but we think the
2:13:16 > 2:13:23main purpose is to split them. For these two, the angle take-offs, jump
2:13:23 > 2:13:26number one. It looks like the kickers have collapsed but they are
2:13:26 > 2:13:30built that way. With the standard straight kicker they offer a
2:13:30 > 2:13:36multitude of choices. Then it is jump number two which from here
2:13:36 > 2:13:43resembles the frozen ramparts of an ice Palace. Finally something we
2:13:43 > 2:13:46recognise, two standard kickers on the last jump. I think it's the best
2:13:46 > 2:13:52course ever.Absolutely. It is like a code that the riders will have two
2:13:52 > 2:13:57crack. Interesting to see who can decipher them. Wouldn't your kids
2:13:57 > 2:13:57love a
2:13:57 > 2:14:02decipher them. Wouldn't your kids love a go at that! Double kinks and
2:14:02 > 2:14:06rainbow boxes. If someone can make a fortune with a soft play version
2:14:06 > 2:14:11that is perfect for a wet Saturday. Qualification was made up of two
2:14:11 > 2:14:15groups or heats, and in each group the riders get two runs, these
2:14:15 > 2:14:19scores are added together and the top six in each group will go
2:14:19 > 2:14:23through. Billy Morgan was in heat one. Let's join Tim Warwood and Ed
2:14:23 > 2:14:33Leigh. COMMENTATOR: is a lot of speculation about Sebastien Toutant,
2:14:33 > 2:14:39one of the bastions over the last decade.A very solid rider. It is
2:14:39 > 2:14:46about style and this man has it in the absolute bucketload. Back 180 on
2:14:46 > 2:14:56and off, holding that rail very nicely. Slide 270.
2:15:01 > 2:15:04Twist and drag. Beautiful, that was the butter we were talking about
2:15:04 > 2:15:11when you balance on the nose and slide of the take-off.1260, really
2:15:11 > 2:15:16nice.
2:15:17 > 2:15:22nice. Front side, double court, nearly caught the first 720 of that.
2:15:22 > 2:15:28Then with room to spare on the backside ten at the bottom. Really
2:15:28 > 2:15:34nice.Rangefinder for me. Rangefinder, exactly.Look at this,
2:15:34 > 2:15:38beautiful.And again, a completely different line through the rails
2:15:38 > 2:15:44from everybody else.Lovely, just the composure, it's a good
2:15:44 > 2:15:47guideline, if someone can grab all the way through a trick like that
2:15:47 > 2:16:00you know you they are in control. Nothing too special, low 70s? 78.1,
2:16:00 > 2:16:04very impressive. That is the first indicator we have seen that the
2:16:04 > 2:16:11judges are looking for clean lines. Here we go. Take a breath, this will
2:16:11 > 2:16:18be the benchmark, smiles all round, Marcus Kleveland, burst onto the
2:16:18 > 2:16:23scene at 11 or 12.13, there were rumours this kid could do doubles at
2:16:23 > 2:16:3111 but he was one of the first to do a triple 13.Switched to 70 on, 270
2:16:31 > 2:16:39off. A lot of speed and the kink rail. Then a gap, 270. Another
2:16:39 > 2:16:43different line here. Huge gap, lip side to fake it and I think that
2:16:43 > 2:16:46might have been a little mistake, but this kid can roll with the
2:16:46 > 2:16:52punches, switch into the first of these jumps, huge switchback, wow!
2:16:52 > 2:16:59How did he stop that rotation? Switch 1260. This is the Marcus we
2:16:59 > 2:17:14know. Bottom jumper. 1442 finish. He had so much time to spare, finished
2:17:14 > 2:17:25with four foot in the air.We have a new leader in heat one of the men's
2:17:25 > 2:17:28qualifiers in slopestyle. It is about getting that out of the way,
2:17:28 > 2:17:32calming your Olympic nerves, getting the score on the board. He has done
2:17:32 > 2:17:42it in emphatic style. Carlos Garcia-Knight, Kiwi out of
2:17:42 > 2:17:48Christchurch in New Zealand. Switch up on the rails.Looked like he lost
2:17:48 > 2:17:52a bit of control them through the kink on that, nice, technical, the
2:17:52 > 2:17:59judges will like to see that, taking on a lot more of that rail. Then
2:17:59 > 2:18:11flip, just leaving a hand behind. 540 of the track. So front side with
2:18:11 > 2:18:17the roast beef grab through the legs into a backside. Lovely 1260! This
2:18:17 > 2:18:23is looking good, this is looking really good. Switch backside, 1260,
2:18:23 > 2:18:27three and a half rotations, he's happy with that, and so he should
2:18:27 > 2:18:33be. What a solid run.We saw him do that in practice yesterday, and it's
2:18:33 > 2:18:42a very, very solid run, isn't it? Behind Marcus Kleveland, the best we
2:18:42 > 2:18:54have seen so far.Really solid run. 80.1, you are correct. Moves into
2:18:54 > 2:19:10second place just behind Marcus Kleveland.Which Roisland will we
2:19:10 > 2:19:16see, Eddie?I think the ones we love, the consistent ones.
2:19:16 > 2:19:18Disappointing for the Norwegian, the pressure on a little for all these
2:19:18 > 2:19:27guys. With Marcus Kleveland doing so well, he is absorbing a lot of the
2:19:27 > 2:19:32expectation for them. Had weight backside to 70, so taking off and
2:19:32 > 2:19:41spinning over the rail -- had weight backside 270.Nice, cheeky frontside
2:19:41 > 2:19:46five, clean over it.He used it as a straight kicker, didn't he? Tricky
2:19:46 > 2:19:55one there.Well held, looking good for Roisland. Backside spin. Really
2:19:55 > 2:20:00nice, the 1080 puts it down. Now was the sun comes out into this bottom
2:20:00 > 2:20:07jump for him, big 1440, hand patches the air, you called it, -- punches
2:20:07 > 2:20:10the air, we saw the consistent Roisland there. There are a couple
2:20:10 > 2:20:13of moments where you thought it might not happen for him, he was sat
2:20:13 > 2:20:18on the back a tiny bit.Melon grabbed there. Front hand on the
2:20:18 > 2:20:23heel edge of the snowboard between the legs. A nice shot of his pants
2:20:23 > 2:20:30there! Free of charge. Waiting for the judges to pick this apart. 76.5,
2:20:30 > 2:20:36so he slides in just
2:20:38 > 2:20:45so he slides in just behind Toutant at the moment. The Korean
2:20:45 > 2:20:52snowboarder will not start, and neither
2:20:52 > 2:21:01neither will Van Der Velden, so Nichols. Lookout EC he made that
2:21:01 > 2:21:06look. Very nice.
2:21:06 > 2:21:08look. Very nice. 180 on, 360, backside seven off the track, took
2:21:08 > 2:21:17it for speed.Best rail section we have seen so far.Frontside ten. His
2:21:17 > 2:21:22adrenaline will be peaking at the moment. Backside 1260. Looking good
2:21:22 > 2:21:31from Jamie Nicholls. Just to cap ten. Very nice.Very smart. Score on
2:21:31 > 2:21:40the board, that's what we've said. We'll see a really nice 720 grab.
2:21:40 > 2:21:45What is beautiful in a lot of these things is is adjusting them, he is
2:21:45 > 2:21:53changing the access to the rotation, really confident.1260, slight hand
2:21:53 > 2:21:58drag for him there. Those rails up top with the best we have seen so
2:21:58 > 2:22:05far. 71.5 six. That is a lot lower than I thought we were going to see.
2:22:05 > 2:22:11So the first runs here at men's slopestyle qualification. No
2:22:11 > 2:22:21surprises to see Marcus Kleveland in first.
2:22:21 > 2:22:25first. Very little between Jamie Nicholls and Chris Corning.
2:22:25 > 2:22:30Interesting second run here, not least because we would see Marcus
2:22:30 > 2:22:33Kleveland throw down a more adventurous run than we saw in run
2:22:33 > 2:22:40one. Bergrem, not one of the riders currently sat in 11th who has the
2:22:40 > 2:22:45potential to blast into the top six -- one of the riders. He felt on the
2:22:45 > 2:22:51third jump so he needs to clean up here. Intentionally coming off the
2:22:51 > 2:22:56rainbow rail early so he can find the transition then get back onto
2:22:56 > 2:23:03the rail. Lovely intensity. Packed in the tricks there.Nice rail
2:23:03 > 2:23:10section so far. 180 on, 360 off. Stopped it. He almost overcook that
2:23:10 > 2:23:17but he stopped it, so frontside... 1080. He did so well to get around
2:23:17 > 2:23:20there.But it's not looking intentional at the moment, looks
2:23:20 > 2:23:27like he is surviving rather than... 1216 hour switching to the spot and
2:23:27 > 2:23:37jump, 1262 cloudburst. Three and a half rotations. He's put it down,
2:23:37 > 2:23:42it's clean, but I don't know if it is clean enough. For me there was
2:23:42 > 2:23:45just a little, not hesitation, but he didn't look comfortable and in
2:23:45 > 2:23:50control through the last 360.Is summed it up perfectly when you said
2:23:50 > 2:23:55that run didn't look intentional. It looked like he was just in for the
2:23:55 > 2:24:00ride.From the track, that midpoint... Look at that, that's
2:24:00 > 2:24:04cost him.The judges want to see the boards landing perfect, they will
2:24:04 > 2:24:08get their protractor is out and be able to spot the 90 degrees
2:24:08 > 2:24:14measurement.So another one of the big hitters jumped up into fifth.
2:24:14 > 2:24:20Does he remain a fifth?Wow, that I didn't see, that was not better than
2:24:20 > 2:24:27Jamie Nicholls's first run.Your current leader, Marcus Kleveland.
2:24:27 > 2:24:30This kid is ice cold, his preparation for Korea has been
2:24:30 > 2:24:37nothing short of breathtaking. He said had earlier on, he entered four
2:24:37 > 2:24:41contest this year, four slopestyles, one big air, and won all three
2:24:41 > 2:24:45slopestyles.And how about that, completely different rail line
2:24:45 > 2:24:52through the top section, that big gap, little nose but, 540 off,
2:24:52 > 2:24:58switching to the first of these angled jumps, speed here...
2:24:58 > 2:25:06Alley-oop against the run of that angle.I quite like the fact that he
2:25:06 > 2:25:13has fallen over.It means his human. LAUGHTER
2:25:13 > 2:25:18has fallen over.It means his human. LAUGHTER. Absolutely ridiculous!
2:25:18 > 2:25:22Here it is, the angle of that kick firing him to the left and he is
2:25:22 > 2:25:26rotating to the right. That's called an alley-oop, you rotate against the
2:25:26 > 2:25:33transition.You could just tell on the run-in that he didn't have
2:25:33 > 2:25:37enough speed for this. The body formed their as is tuxes head
2:25:37 > 2:25:44underneath into that last corkscrew -- tuxes head in.I don't see many
2:25:44 > 2:25:53people upsetting 83.7 one.
2:25:54 > 2:25:55people upsetting 83.7 one. Callas Garcia-Knight currently in second
2:25:55 > 2:26:01place and I think he has room for improvement.Does he try and improve
2:26:01 > 2:26:07on that run, try to shoot across the bow of Marcus Kleveland here?He had
2:26:07 > 2:26:12to show the news coming, put pressure on him.Love the switch up,
2:26:12 > 2:26:19don't we?We love it.And then through the king, you see him
2:26:19 > 2:26:23landing in the middle of that.It doesn't look pretty because it is
2:26:23 > 2:26:27not flowing but it is so technical to keep your edges clean and get
2:26:27 > 2:26:34them through the kinks and the metal.Really nice.Really squaring
2:26:34 > 2:26:42that off, isn't he?Double Cork 1080 from him, put it down really nice.
2:26:42 > 2:26:49Oh, little bit short. There is no one else who does those like that,
2:26:49 > 2:26:55the way he rolls over the top of it. He grabs tail on it, doesn't he, and
2:26:55 > 2:26:59really winds it over. Then landing that deep potentially cost him,
2:26:59 > 2:27:07there he is, rolling over the top. What will the judges say here? It is
2:27:07 > 2:27:15irrelevant, to be honest. He doesn't care, he has an 80 in the bag.
2:27:15 > 2:27:19Settled yourselves, Jamie Nicholls currently in seventh, just outside
2:27:19 > 2:27:25the top six qualifying spot. He needs this run. Hamish McKnight
2:27:25 > 2:27:30seeing him off there, head coach of the British team. The boy from
2:27:30 > 2:27:37Bradford coming into this first jump. Switch 180, 360 off, missed
2:27:37 > 2:27:45the grab on that. Backside 270, 270 off. Making it look so easy. A
2:27:45 > 2:27:54difficult trip, 180 on, 360 off, into the saddle.Muscle memory
2:27:54 > 2:27:57starting to kick him now for Jamie Nicholls as he comes into the
2:27:57 > 2:28:09kickers.Slight 1080, needs to put this down here.Massive.O...Jamie!
2:28:09 > 2:28:15It was huge! He saw everyone else coming up short on baton Centre,
2:28:15 > 2:28:20didn't he?He really did.I will dwell on this point here because we
2:28:20 > 2:28:24will not get another chance having not seen him make it. I genuinely
2:28:24 > 2:28:37think he has been robbed here.I think he has as well.Like-for-like
2:28:37 > 2:28:42you have Bergrem in sixth place who made a massive mistake, Jamie
2:28:42 > 2:28:49Nicholls had one small... Grabbed his hands. I don't think the two
2:28:49 > 2:28:57matchup, I really don't.Absolutely massive. Should have landed there,
2:28:57 > 2:29:06and he still gone. So Jamie's Olympic slopestyle done and dusted.
2:29:07 > 2:29:11Lletget confirmation of the result. Top six will qualify directly for
2:29:11 > 2:29:19the finals. -- Lletget confirmation.
2:29:23 > 2:29:27Painfully close for Jamie Nicholls and Chris Corning.
2:29:29 > 2:29:30STUDIO: Sadly no
2:29:30 > 2:29:34STUDIO: Sadly no place in the final four Billy Morgan. Once again,
2:29:34 > 2:29:38arguably his biggest chance will come in the new event, big air, two
2:29:38 > 2:29:43weeks today on day 15 but let's get into the second heat, a big moment
2:29:43 > 2:29:55for both Jamie and Rowan Coultas.
2:30:00 > 2:30:04Is one of the most experienced Norwegian riders, in his third
2:30:04 > 2:30:10Olympics, the defending silver medallist, riding the pipe in
2:30:10 > 2:30:14Vancouver and then he did slopestyle and got the Silver Medal in Sochi.
2:30:14 > 2:30:19Yeah.One of the most stylish and consistent and measured riders,
2:30:19 > 2:30:26beautiful to watch. That lovely lip slide and he came off the rail early
2:30:26 > 2:30:32which people have been thinking is a mistake. How easy is that? That
2:30:32 > 2:30:35flow, very similar to Marcus Cleveland.Yes, the switch is worth
2:30:35 > 2:30:48noting. That's 270 gap. We have been told that the saddle isn't scoring
2:30:48 > 2:30:52as high, it is a setup for these jumps and that's a perfect front
2:30:52 > 2:30:59side 1080.
2:30:59 > 2:31:02side 1080. Backside 1260, was it? The control to slow that down.
2:31:02 > 2:31:08Absolutely beautiful. I think we might have seen the highest score of
2:31:08 > 2:31:14the day.The posy struck when he landed made it that like he was
2:31:14 > 2:31:28modelling for a catalogue shoot. Phenomenal control. This is the
2:31:30 > 2:31:33best of Staale Sandbech we are seeing. We wondered if Chris Corning
2:31:33 > 2:31:39suffered by going first in the last round. The most interesting man in
2:31:39 > 2:31:43preparation here, two career ending injury is that he has come back from
2:31:43 > 2:31:48and here he is at the Olympic final. For him, relatively safe through the
2:31:48 > 2:31:56rail section, that back 270, and a big gap to the down bar.He landed
2:31:56 > 2:32:01it beautifully, absolutely square between his bindings.Switch
2:32:01 > 2:32:08backside, 1260. He make it look like 1080.It snaps on the landing,
2:32:08 > 2:32:19didn't it?Front side into the cork, going up side down. The triple.
2:32:19 > 2:32:26Boom, the backside triple cork, he absolutely nailed it.He's the most
2:32:26 > 2:32:31determined and focused competitor you will ever see. Look at the
2:32:31 > 2:32:38landing, the triple cork backside 1440. A knowing smile there from
2:32:38 > 2:32:46Mark McMorris. Next we have Seppi Smits, the Belgian, 26-year-old,
2:32:46 > 2:32:55goofy footed. Learning in the snow dome and perfecting his riding at
2:32:55 > 2:33:04the park. Lovely style, very languid.Switch backside 270 gap on
2:33:04 > 2:33:16the top rail. Switch backside. No messing around.
2:33:16 > 2:33:19messing around. Frontside 540, setting up now for the switch into
2:33:19 > 2:33:25the first of the three jumps. Switch backside 1080. One of the first men
2:33:25 > 2:33:32to put all of those 1080s in four directions. 1260, well held. Now,
2:33:32 > 2:33:38the jump.
2:33:38 > 2:33:41the jump. Backside 1260, to finish. Fascinating to see what he gets the
2:33:41 > 2:33:50score. I had a chat after the first heat with the judges to qualify --
2:33:50 > 2:33:55to find out what they are looking for. The right-hand side of the
2:33:55 > 2:34:00rails, where Chris Corning and Jamie Nicholls went, is the easy side.
2:34:00 > 2:34:11Seppi Smits going down the middle. 78.36. This kid is the real deal,
2:34:11 > 2:34:16Redmond Gerard from Colorado. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, one of seven
2:34:16 > 2:34:20kids, he's the sixth. They moved to Denver and he's grown up
2:34:20 > 2:34:28snowboarding. Going with a very similar line to Jamie Nicholls.Oh,
2:34:28 > 2:34:32nice, the first person we've seen up and over the goalpost.50-50,
2:34:32 > 2:34:38broadside through the double kink. So hard to stay on the rails there.
2:34:38 > 2:34:45The melon grab.He needs to pick up the speed, he really does. He is
2:34:45 > 2:34:49slight and he might struggle with speed on the jumps.Yes, it's purely
2:34:49 > 2:34:59a case of inertia for Red.Yeah. I think it's 900 there. Well held.
2:34:59 > 2:35:02Because your trajectory coming into the landing, you are dropping much
2:35:02 > 2:35:10faster. Triple cork 1440! How did he get it around? There was no room, I
2:35:10 > 2:35:15thought he'd land on his head! Let's see how close his head is on the
2:35:15 > 2:35:23second one. He landed with his legs bent, his head between his legs.
2:35:23 > 2:35:2682.55, interesting that the judges normally like seeing a bit more
2:35:26 > 2:35:32amplitude and space on the big tricks. The world's best Biggar
2:35:32 > 2:35:35rider, he's been focusing on that for a while and he hasn't been
2:35:35 > 2:35:41beaten by any of the big guns in a year. -- best Biggar rider. His
2:35:41 > 2:35:46slopestyle has suffered as a result. The weakest part of his game,
2:35:46 > 2:35:51interesting to see how he fares. It really will come on the first rail
2:35:51 > 2:35:59he missed half of this section. Backside 270, the kink rail, this is
2:35:59 > 2:36:07similar to Jamie Nicholls. Backside rodeo knows grab.We saw the full
2:36:07 > 2:36:16extent of his wingspan.Big double cork 1260. Second jump. Frontside
2:36:16 > 2:36:251080. Now into the jump, what can he do?Winding up hard. Triple cork
2:36:25 > 2:36:311440, nearly putting it to the knuckle. And how he held on.Wow.A
2:36:31 > 2:36:35few people winding up into the big spins have struggled to find the
2:36:35 > 2:36:40distance. It's like the pop you need for the 1440 is taking away from the
2:36:40 > 2:36:50distance. 83.45, that's enough for second place from Max Parrot.
2:36:52 > 2:36:57Coultas will be looking to enjoy his first Olympics. No pressure on the
2:36:57 > 2:37:04young man.Nobody's got... He's got a love of speed and style, Rowan.
2:37:04 > 2:37:11He's here on merit -- he's got a lot of speed. We saw in his first league
2:37:11 > 2:37:17contest, he went out and enjoyed himself. The samurai sword grab he
2:37:17 > 2:37:23has on his 1260 melon, a thing of beauty.Taking a very funky line in,
2:37:23 > 2:37:32he'll lose a lot of speed. Yeah. Corr!A weird line into that jump
2:37:32 > 2:37:37and he had to cut very hard to get it off. He'll be relying on his
2:37:37 > 2:37:42second run. I think that will have done his nerves good.Back to back
2:37:42 > 2:37:48at the Brits. So, Billy Morgan. No longer sporting that incredible
2:37:48 > 2:37:50moustache you see on his profile picture. Coming straight down the
2:37:50 > 2:38:04middle. 270 on, 270 off.Backside 270. A huge gap. Look at the style.
2:38:04 > 2:38:13Cheeky little Millet flip over the A-frame. Backside rodeo. Billy cited
2:38:13 > 2:38:19that speed was an issue into the jumps. What has he got? Triple cork.
2:38:19 > 2:38:26Ooh, well held, just.Oh, and he knew, didn't he? Didn't have enough
2:38:26 > 2:38:34speed. Most of the time... He's warming up. Sending the triple is
2:38:34 > 2:38:41very deep there. He made that look so easy, the triple. It is tucked
2:38:41 > 2:38:46and cook from Billy on this one. He has to commit here. Opening up a bit
2:38:46 > 2:38:53early. Sixth place with a straight air and a mistake on the first jump.
2:38:53 > 2:38:59The two Canadians out in France, Mark McMorris and Max Parrot. -- out
2:38:59 > 2:39:09in front. Mark McMorris, first-place qualifier at the moment. The most
2:39:09 > 2:39:14dominant rider of the last eight years, in slopestyle. He is the
2:39:14 > 2:39:22consummate rider, isn't he?Yeah, every time he lands, you know?
2:39:22 > 2:39:31That's why he's in first place right now. 270. Backside 360, locking in
2:39:31 > 2:39:40the Grange.Landing forward slide you've got a foot each way -- in the
2:39:40 > 2:39:47grind. 50-50. My goodness.Backside 1260, so perfect.The landing was
2:39:47 > 2:39:51like laying your head down on a pillow. Look how easy the landings
2:39:51 > 2:39:59are.The triple, yes, easy! The ground came up to meet him, he
2:39:59 > 2:40:02didn't have to do a thing, he just waited for the Earth to rise with
2:40:02 > 2:40:08his feet.Ending in Sochi in 2014 with a broken rib and he still made
2:40:08 > 2:40:12it into the bronze medal position. He's coming here for gold, make no
2:40:12 > 2:40:20mistake. 86.83, the highest score we've seen today and no surprise.
2:40:20 > 2:40:23Redmond Gerard is the first really consistent American slopestyle
2:40:23 > 2:40:28rider.
2:40:30 > 2:40:36rider.This is the best bit of his run.
2:40:36 > 2:40:40run.Beautiful frontside air, catching the transition. So
2:40:40 > 2:40:42difficult, he wouldn't have been able to see the landing. He's coming
2:40:42 > 2:40:49over blind.Completely blind. Oh, hello!That was lovely. It wasn't
2:40:49 > 2:40:57clean last time, it's brilliant seeing that. Polished.
2:40:57 > 2:41:01seeing that. Polished.Massive, well held. Going very wide, and now the
2:41:01 > 2:41:11big double crippler that he does. Way better.Yeah, much cleaner.He
2:41:11 > 2:41:18knew it.Such a shame. Disappointment for Redmond Gerard.
2:41:18 > 2:41:22We talked about it, his weight. He doesn't have the mass to drive him
2:41:22 > 2:41:34over the kickers. Max Parrot, currently in second place. A man who
2:41:34 > 2:41:39is known as a big air rider. Struggling on the rails. We thought
2:41:39 > 2:41:45he would struggle on the enormous rail setup but he's proving them
2:41:45 > 2:41:51wrong.That's so hard.Lipsyte 's 270 and the risk of catching the
2:41:51 > 2:41:56tail of your snowboard with it.He wants to qualify first.Really?He
2:41:56 > 2:42:01differently wants to.He has a lot of work to do to overhaul Mark
2:42:01 > 2:42:09McMorris.Backside rodeo knows grab, I really like that trick. A really
2:42:09 > 2:42:13weird line.He can go for the front triple.Yeah I've been thinking
2:42:13 > 2:42:21that. He's going to go big here, isn't he. Something big here.
2:42:21 > 2:42:30Backside triple. Playing it safe. Playing it safe!When you're talking
2:42:30 > 2:42:37about Max Parrot, with the cap 1800 on his back, yes, he's playing it
2:42:37 > 2:42:50safe. All wrong. They of .3 -- 87 point three. Roland Coultas.Come
2:42:50 > 2:43:04on, Rowan.All the elements are there.A beautiful run.That's nice.
2:43:04 > 2:43:10Fast 270.
2:43:10 > 2:43:18Fast 270. The gap board slide 270, perhaps coming off a bit early. This
2:43:18 > 2:43:24is where it went wrong last time. Oh, no, he has gone again. It wasn't
2:43:24 > 2:43:28right for him, whatever was up with the binding is putting him off
2:43:28 > 2:43:31because the rails weren't as clean as he wanted them either.
2:43:31 > 2:43:38Disappointing for Coultas. Limps in. Billy Morgan. That picture!
2:43:38 > 2:43:45Fantastic moustache. Billy had the ingredients in the first run. He
2:43:45 > 2:43:51made it to the finals, is is a question of putting it to the final.
2:43:51 > 2:43:58Very clean, nice and fast through the top section. He got onto the
2:43:58 > 2:44:05double kink very nicely there. He made sure he had plenty of the rail
2:44:05 > 2:44:12and he just his Speedwell.
2:44:12 > 2:44:14and he just his Speedwell. He had to open up, he knew he wasn't going to
2:44:14 > 2:44:23get it around. Such are his keen senses there, he knew.Oh, Billy!
2:44:23 > 2:44:31And the disappointment tells.Yeah, a shameful Billy Morgan.I love that
2:44:31 > 2:44:35grab.Really nice double ground. He had the spatial awareness to open up
2:44:35 > 2:44:41on the triple. If he had committed it could be a different scene.
2:44:41 > 2:44:50Confirmation of the result in qualification heats two.
2:44:54 > 2:44:57into the second heat, a big moment for both Jamie and Rowan Coultas.
2:44:57 > 2:45:02Do you feel your first score should have gone higher than what it did?I
2:45:02 > 2:45:08was gutted, I was genuinely gutted. I felt I was clean through the
2:45:08 > 2:45:11rails, I was doing something different from everyone else on the
2:45:11 > 2:45:17house thing in the third section, and 71, I wasn't happy with.We
2:45:17 > 2:45:21wondered why it was that little bit lower.I don't understand, but
2:45:21 > 2:45:25that's how it goes sometimes in competitions, just today obviously
2:45:25 > 2:45:29wasn't my day. I am happy anyway, it's just how it goes in
2:45:29 > 2:45:34competitions, I'm just glad I'm in one piece.Not exactly according to
2:45:34 > 2:45:39plan.First round I thought I was coming into fast and then I scrub
2:45:39 > 2:45:43too much on the second round I didn't do it hard enough.Nice to
2:45:43 > 2:45:48have written an Olympic course? Amazing to be here and write the
2:45:48 > 2:45:52actual course but still bummed. Billy Morgan, you put that first run
2:45:52 > 2:45:57down almost down the straight out through the middle but that put you
2:45:57 > 2:46:01in sixth, what about make you feel into the second run?I was so close
2:46:01 > 2:46:05on that one, had I landed that instead of the small scrub I
2:46:05 > 2:46:08probably would have got through and I felt that was what I was
2:46:08 > 2:46:12struggling with, getting that close was a pain. Was the speed problem
2:46:12 > 2:46:17the whole day?Basically if there was a headwind I knew I would be
2:46:17 > 2:46:22slow going into that jump and on the second rail with the gap down I felt
2:46:22 > 2:46:25headwind there and I was like, oh no, and all I could think about was
2:46:25 > 2:46:31the rest so when I came out I pinned it as hard as I could but I was too
2:46:31 > 2:46:38slow, then again, I did a double, I might as well crack on, but again,
2:46:38 > 2:46:42headwind, there it is.STUDIO: Disappointment for the British trio,
2:46:42 > 2:46:46no British involvement in that final. It is the Canadians in pole
2:46:46 > 2:46:51position, Parrot and McMorris, AKA a crib, he has broken his ribs so
2:46:51 > 2:46:59often that's what they call him. -- Mack rib. That begins 1am UK time.
2:46:59 > 2:47:06Jim Jones asking the question -- Jenny Jones, she of the bronze medal
2:47:06 > 2:47:10four years ago. Ice hockey hits the headline whenever there is the
2:47:10 > 2:47:12latest grudge match between the Canadian women and American women
2:47:12 > 2:47:17usually in the final but this time it is a unified Korean team making a
2:47:17 > 2:47:22lot of headlines and taking an awful lot of attention, and there was a
2:47:22 > 2:47:25hugely significant morning this morning for the whole Korean
2:47:25 > 2:47:29peninsula, technically a war of course, these two countries since
2:47:29 > 2:47:34the 1950s because they unified team took to the ice, and here they come
2:47:34 > 2:47:38to face the appropriately and famously neutral Swiss. The Korean
2:47:38 > 2:47:42women have played one warm up game against the Swedes but this was a
2:47:42 > 2:47:46real today, and a massive moment not just for geopolitics but members of
2:47:46 > 2:47:53that team.
2:47:55 > 2:48:01COMMENTATOR: Chance to skate into a bit of space as well.Switzerland
2:48:01 > 2:48:07able to snuff it out. And the way we go. They will be a chance. Shot on
2:48:07 > 2:48:12goal, and the opener of the tournament comes for Moller, as
2:48:12 > 2:48:22shorthand, a snapshot with just too much power. Their ends. Brilliant.
2:48:22 > 2:48:32Miller gets a second. Cruise control.
2:48:32 > 2:48:43Nice pass, this is beautiful, from the Swiss, N, a hat-trick in her
2:48:43 > 2:48:50first match, and that is a great beauty. Here is Muller. Nice little
2:48:50 > 2:48:54interception that goes on the board. Throws this one back out in front,
2:48:54 > 2:49:00comes down to Muller, everything according to her right now. STUDIO:
2:49:00 > 2:49:05Has another chance and scores. Sinn could do nothing about it. Four
2:49:05 > 2:49:14goals and an 4-0 lead.Korea needs to get a few more shots out of
2:49:14 > 2:49:25Switzerland.Another chance and another goal, what a feed that was.
2:49:25 > 2:49:33High fives all around. A 5-star performance through just 22 minutes.
2:49:33 > 2:49:38Now it is 5-0 you do get the sense that Switzerland have put their foot
2:49:38 > 2:49:47off the gas, maybe with the exception of fee be Stanz always
2:49:47 > 2:49:53moving her feet.Stanz scores, but is six, Stanz scratching around all
2:49:53 > 2:49:59over the place looking for something.
2:49:59 > 2:50:02something. So a five on four advantage for the Swiss, as the shot
2:50:02 > 2:50:11comes in, I don't know of that deflated in front but it was on
2:50:11 > 2:50:15point from Stalder, a rocket inside the blue line and that is number
2:50:15 > 2:50:24seven. The power play to -- took moments and Stalder enjoying it.
2:50:24 > 2:50:30Here is Muller. Great pass, Stalder on goal looking for a second,
2:50:30 > 2:50:38Stalder... Verities. Eighth of the game. Muller from scorer to
2:50:38 > 2:50:42provider, Switzerland 8-0.It is those little things that make
2:50:42 > 2:50:46terrific hockey players, watch Muller, slight hesitation before she
2:50:46 > 2:50:51passes it, opens up a lane for Stalder cougars had to the net. A
2:50:51 > 2:50:56terrific power move, backhand to forehands, past the outstretched
2:50:56 > 2:51:01Shin.Opening game for the hosts is over, it ends in defeat, a heavy one
2:51:01 > 2:51:10at that, to a very exciting Swiss side. What a day for Korea, what a
2:51:10 > 2:51:14day for Switzerland, and the Swiss looked like they could be one of the
2:51:14 > 2:51:19teams to watch as this tournament goes on.
2:51:19 > 2:51:20STUDIO: And
2:51:20 > 2:51:24STUDIO: And after all the big build-up, a walloping for the Korean
2:51:24 > 2:51:28team, but they have other chances because these are the standings in
2:51:28 > 2:51:33group B. Interesting that at the women's ice hockey there are two
2:51:33 > 2:51:37groups, group a features the top four seeds who will all progress in
2:51:37 > 2:51:41the competition but here in group B it is scrapped because only the top
2:51:41 > 2:51:44two will make it through the quarterfinals, and for Switzerland
2:51:44 > 2:51:50who took the bronze in Sochi, incidentally, Muller was only 15
2:51:50 > 2:51:54when she scored their winner to take the bronze, and she is back older
2:51:54 > 2:52:02and wiser with four goals to her credit in that match. Now, wind

2:52:05 > 2:52:06affected the ski jumping, as you might have seen earlier, in fact the
2:52:06 > 2:52:11men's normal hill went from day one in today two, and it was all very,
2:52:11 > 2:52:15very cold as well, with a terrible wind chill factor, and it was
2:52:15 > 2:52:20slightly comical at times, however, no one is smiling about the
2:52:20 > 2:52:22prospects for one of the main marquee events here in the Winter
2:52:22 > 2:52:27Olympics because it is the men's downhill, scheduled to go ahead at
2:52:27 > 2:52:342am in Great Britain, however, wind conditions forecast to be pretty
2:52:34 > 2:52:37difficult. No matter what they face on the jumps on course, we can give
2:52:37 > 2:52:41you a picture of the course. Graham Bell used to give them a run for his
2:52:41 > 2:52:46money when he was in his pomp, five-time downhill of course, and
2:52:46 > 2:52:51this time he is tackling with no poles camera.
2:52:51 > 2:52:56Let's go and have a look at this men's Olympic downhill. The
2:52:56 > 2:53:00beautiful view from the top, but this is what the racers have to
2:53:00 > 2:53:07focus on. It starts pretty much straightaway because you come around
2:53:07 > 2:53:14this right footed turn and dived down onto this
2:53:14 > 2:53:19down onto this pumping... Really important to carry the speed over
2:53:19 > 2:53:23the rollers. You have to really let it fly there, punching the first
2:53:23 > 2:53:31one, this is the jump, over it and want of a roller-coaster section.
2:53:31 > 2:53:36Safe as part of the course here, tunnels underneath the track, then
2:53:36 > 2:53:43you have to absorb the rollers. Coming up to the second jump now,
2:53:43 > 2:53:48Dragon Claw, straight up of their and heading down towards the Forest
2:53:48 > 2:53:57road. This turn here is crucial, and it brings you from the steep onto
2:53:57 > 2:54:12the flat. It's the third jump, over it, heading towards the Blue Dragon
2:54:12 > 2:54:17Valley. Really important to keep the speed going as you go into this
2:54:17 > 2:54:23almost like a half pipe section on the course, just rolling from edge
2:54:23 > 2:54:29to edge, coming out of the Blue Dragon Valley over the little
2:54:29 > 2:54:36roller... Heading towards the Magic Tree, verities to the left of the
2:54:36 > 2:54:42course, inside to the finish, onto this little fall away section,
2:54:42 > 2:54:50carrying speed through the last turn, heading towards the last jump,
2:54:50 > 2:54:58over it, big flight, and across the line.
2:54:58 > 2:55:02over it, big flight, and across the line. Well, the course conditions
2:55:02 > 2:55:06are absolutely perfect. These freezing temperatures have made it
2:55:06 > 2:55:10absolutely excellent for making snow. It's fast, it's grippy, and
2:55:10 > 2:55:16it's going to be a great race. You never lose it, do you?
2:55:16 > 2:55:19Congratulations. When I did ski Sunday my heart was in my mouth
2:55:19 > 2:55:25whenever he did his little course run but he always gets down OK. From
2:55:25 > 2:55:29the top of the mountains where there is a fair bit of wind as I told you,
2:55:29 > 2:55:32still no word on whether the men's downhill will go ahead, it's
2:55:32 > 2:55:37scheduled for 2am, but the latest weather reports we have, wind
2:55:37 > 2:55:44predicted to strength of 72 per hour, -- kilometres per hour, which
2:55:44 > 2:55:47means the gondola which takes into the top of the mountain will not be
2:55:47 > 2:55:50working so heart in mouth time as to whether one of the great Winter
2:55:50 > 2:55:52Olympics events will have to be postponed or whether it will be
2:55:52 > 2:55:57worth setting your alarms for 1:50am to get up and watch it. Don't blame
2:55:57 > 2:56:03us if you have a very short sleep! But no weather affected events
2:56:03 > 2:56:09inside the short track arena, and I have been joined by two free time
2:56:09 > 2:56:16Olympians, Sarah Lindsay, John Ely, who carried the flag
2:56:19 > 2:56:21who carried the flag for the Britain team in the opening ceremony in
2:56:21 > 2:56:23Sochi, and Sarah, three Olympic Games going all the way back to,
2:56:23 > 2:56:27whisper it, Salt Lake City! A long time ago, 16 years of age.You did
2:56:27 > 2:56:30my first interview. We were both much younger but still very
2:56:30 > 2:56:35enthusiastic! Tell me, how much, watching events, makes you long to
2:56:35 > 2:56:40get the skates back on. Don't give anything away but I bet you are
2:56:40 > 2:56:45itching to get back out on the ice? Definitely, seeing the ice out there
2:56:45 > 2:56:53and the skaters smiling, it was great. We shall see. I know you were
2:56:53 > 2:56:56on tenterhooks about your former team-mate Elise Christie who came
2:56:56 > 2:57:01into these Olympics are three-time world champion, but after a
2:57:01 > 2:57:05nightmarish games four years ago could she finally deliver? The
2:57:05 > 2:57:09answers would start to come in the heats of the 500 metres where Elise
2:57:09 > 2:57:18and her team-mates Gilmartin and Thompson were about to compete.
2:57:18 > 2:57:23COMMENTATOR: This is the women's 500 metres, Elise Christie of Great
2:57:23 > 2:57:27Britain in heat number four, and that this Kathryn Thomson of Great
2:57:27 > 2:57:33Britain in heat number two.
2:57:35 > 2:57:38Britain in heat number two. Fontana, a major threat in this 500 metres
2:57:38 > 2:57:42competition going straight to the front, assuming control, four and a
2:57:42 > 2:57:53half laps, but Mack to go now. A bit of a gap back to Thompson.
2:57:55 > 2:57:58of a gap back to Thompson. The Dutch skater almost disappearing
2:57:58 > 2:58:03underneath the barriers. Fontana staying out of trouble, second place
2:58:03 > 2:58:09is the Hungarian, Antonsson has gone as well, nobody around, and these
2:58:09 > 2:58:12two only need to stay upright as they take the bell because they are
2:58:12 > 2:58:25the only two still skating around the track, and it is Fontana and
2:58:25 > 2:58:30also Keszler of hungry her go through. Two skaters have gone down,
2:58:30 > 2:58:37discussions about the eyes. No argy-bargy, is it the ice? Thompson
2:58:37 > 2:58:43just goes down, absolutely no reason whatsoever.Straightforward for
2:58:43 > 2:58:48those two, then, sliding home with a group to spare, Fontana of Italy and
2:58:48 > 2:58:55Keszler of Hungary. The triple world champion from 2017, Elise Christie
2:58:55 > 2:59:05of Great Britain has a tough field here,
2:59:05 > 2:59:23here, Pierron of France, Qu of China, Shim of Korea. Important for
2:59:23 > 2:59:29Elise Christie to make a clean start for her Olympic campaign. Christie
2:59:29 > 2:59:35goes to the front and that is where she will intend to stay to stay out
2:59:35 > 2:59:39of any trouble. Elise Christie leading and Qu of China in second
2:59:39 > 2:59:46place, Shim of Korea, third at the moment, two and a half laps to go,
2:59:46 > 2:59:49Christie out of the gate quickly, staying out of trouble at the
2:59:49 > 2:59:56moment, she has Qu right behind her, Shim of Korea will have to try to
2:59:56 > 3:00:01challenge here, they are going to take the bell and Christie still
3:00:01 > 3:00:05leads, Qu in second place and there will be a battle with Shim of Korea
3:00:05 > 3:00:10trying to go around the outside, top skating from Elise Christie safely
3:00:10 > 3:00:15through to the quarterfinals, Christie winning it, Qu in second
3:00:15 > 3:00:23and Shim of Korea, the local skater, out of it in third.
3:00:23 > 3:00:31She has the fastest time to date, 42.89. If nobody goes any faster in
3:00:31 > 3:00:37the quarterfinals she will gain number one start position. That will
3:00:37 > 3:00:43help her. She's done everything she can. She's stayed out of trouble and
3:00:43 > 3:00:48won in a
3:00:50 > 3:00:58won in a fast time. It is a new Olympic record for Elise Christie,
3:00:58 > 3:01:0542.872. The European 500 metre bronze medallist last year is out
3:01:05 > 3:01:15there now.
3:01:17 > 3:01:27Joint from Korea, the world champion when she was 16 -- joy.
3:01:30 > 3:01:34when she was 16 -- joy. Jaszapati making a good start. Gilmartin
3:01:34 > 3:01:43trying to hold onto second place. The Russian athlete Malagich has a
3:01:43 > 3:01:50lot to do. Gilmartin is trying to close the gap. Sensing that Choi is
3:01:50 > 3:01:58an hurt shoulder. Great racing from Choi. Gilmartin, all three of them
3:01:58 > 3:02:05are out now, chasing behind Minjeong, it is a case of who can
3:02:05 > 3:02:10get up and back in the race the quickest. Gilmartin has clearly been
3:02:10 > 3:02:15injured in the crash, she's struggling to get going. And the
3:02:15 > 3:02:21winner was clearly Minjeong of Korea. She's the only one who
3:02:21 > 3:02:25avoided falling but it's bad news for Charlotte Gilmartin of Great
3:02:25 > 3:02:31Britain who appears to have hurt her right hip, her right side as she
3:02:31 > 3:02:37slowly skates around slowly and forlornly, as we look at Jaszapati
3:02:37 > 3:02:44from Hungary. The judges will have another look at it here.Trying to
3:02:44 > 3:02:50squeeze on the inside, Malagich, pushing Charlotte with her. The
3:02:50 > 3:02:54Hungarian is off-balance and all three of them go down.Interesting
3:02:54 > 3:02:57to see what happens here because it appears from this angle of the
3:02:57 > 3:03:03camera that Malagich was the culprit. And I think she knows it
3:03:03 > 3:03:06because she's walked straight off the ice. It looks like Jaszapati
3:03:06 > 3:03:10caused the problem. Jaszapati almost looks like she fell without any
3:03:10 > 3:03:18contact. And it's a penalty. Gilmartin is given the penalty. She
3:03:18 > 3:03:28is disqualified, the British skater, disqualified. Minjeong goes through.
3:03:28 > 3:03:33Jaszapati as well. Your thoughts? Charlotte is the one who came from
3:03:33 > 3:03:39the outside to the inside. But disappointing for Charlotte. And
3:03:39 > 3:03:47again, Minjeong has skated a new Olympic record in this heat.
3:03:47 > 3:03:52Minjeong and Christie have been superbly impressive. They are the
3:03:52 > 3:03:55fastest two in the first round of the ladies 500 metres.
3:03:55 > 3:03:57fastest two in the first round of the ladies 500 metres. It was an
3:03:57 > 3:04:05Olympic record from Elise for about half an hour. You two are the
3:04:05 > 3:04:09sprinters, the 500 metres was your favourite but this is Elise's least
3:04:09 > 3:04:12favourite, the only one where she isn't a champion but a fantastic
3:04:12 > 3:04:17art.Great start, she's flying from the start which she has been
3:04:17 > 3:04:18art.Great start, she's flying from the start which she has been
3:04:18 > 3:04:22practising. She says that the 500 metres is her favourite but the
3:04:22 > 3:04:26start, if you aren't a natural, can hold you back but she is flying and
3:04:26 > 3:04:30I don't think she's at full throttle.How much still to come in
3:04:30 > 3:04:36that case, Jon?Although she's still not the champion she is the record
3:04:36 > 3:04:39holder so there is some more to come. I think when there are more
3:04:39 > 3:04:44people around her and it is closer racing as the competition goes on
3:04:44 > 3:04:49you will see the real Elise coming out. Today was laying a marker. It
3:04:49 > 3:04:53is flat speed, out and out adrenaline charged speeding. The way
3:04:53 > 3:05:00that she races, from the front, what gives her the advantage in terms of
3:05:00 > 3:05:05the start?I think once you've made it to the front, she has the fastest
3:05:05 > 3:05:08top speed. So you
3:05:08 > 3:05:09it to the front, she has the fastest top speed. So you know, there aren't
3:05:09 > 3:05:12many people who have any hope of thinking about passing her soap as
3:05:12 > 3:05:18long as she gets in front, she's safe. How key is her reputation in
3:05:18 > 3:05:22Korea now and on the World Cup circuit? She's a triple world
3:05:22 > 3:05:27champion but reputations tend to proceed people. How revered is she
3:05:27 > 3:05:30amongst the Korean crowd because quarter years ago it was a different
3:05:30 > 3:05:35story.I think she is revered, coming here with the world title,
3:05:35 > 3:05:39it's like she's going to have a target on her. It is one thing to
3:05:39 > 3:05:44face up to. When the racing gets tight, they will be thinking, it is
3:05:44 > 3:05:49Elise, follow her rather than attacking her. Almost letting her
3:05:49 > 3:05:54win the gold, hopefully, and try and get silver. She has competition in
3:05:54 > 3:05:57Minjeong who beat her to the time today. Looking forward to them going
3:05:57 > 3:06:02head-to-head.Absolutely, quarterfinals and semifinals and
3:06:02 > 3:06:06final from ten o'clock on Tuesday. Charlotte Gilmartin didn't make it,
3:06:06 > 3:06:11we were discussing the correct way to fall and one of the worst ways is
3:06:11 > 3:06:15when you are in the colliding area with somebody else. Difficult to
3:06:15 > 3:06:19keep your arms and legs together. The biggest danger is when more
3:06:19 > 3:06:19keep your arms and legs together. The biggest danger is when more than
3:06:19 > 3:06:24one person goes into the barrier together. You do practice falling
3:06:24 > 3:06:28and keeping your arms and legs in, so you take the body impact against
3:06:28 > 3:06:32the barrier but when two or three people are going at once, it's
3:06:32 > 3:06:37difficult to stay safe. I think Charlotte is OK. You never know, it
3:06:37 > 3:06:41takes a bit of time, with the adrenaline and the nerves, you might
3:06:41 > 3:06:47get up and gate off.Hopefully she's feeling OK.How
3:06:47 > 3:06:47get up and gate off.Hopefully she's feeling OK.How controversial was
3:06:47 > 3:06:54the disqualification? I think from us being British bands, we wanted
3:06:54 > 3:06:58Charlotte to do well, we can see that we wanted it to go in her
3:06:58 > 3:07:02favour but like she said in her interview, it is a 50-50 call. I
3:07:02 > 3:07:08think where she struggled, she let the Russian girl come alongside her
3:07:08 > 3:07:11out of the corner before and then she opened the door and then she has
3:07:11 > 3:07:17to come back across her and it's in the referee's hands.Elise going for
3:07:17 > 3:07:21gold on Tuesday. There was one gold medal today, in the men's 1500
3:07:21 > 3:07:27metres. Farrell Treacy was the British racer involved in that one,
3:07:27 > 3:07:31the 22-year-old was in his first Games and there was a
3:07:31 > 3:07:33disqualification for him as well.
3:07:33 > 3:07:34Games and there was a disqualification for him as well.
3:07:34 > 3:07:38Can you analyse this one.I think it would be great for him to have gone
3:07:38 > 3:07:41out and put in a good performance but it hasn't happened to him
