:00:44. > :01:39.Hello, welcome back to our Winter Olympic coverage on the BBC, we are
:01:40. > :01:45.-- we are live in Sochi, a stones throw from the of the Black Sea. It
:01:46. > :01:49.is chilly, crisp, and the air is burning bright with anticipation and
:01:50. > :01:55.excitement. The flame is looking magnificent. In the distance, the
:01:56. > :02:00.stage, where there is a concert on, and every night, medals will be
:02:01. > :02:07.presented. We have had a feud today, hung around the necks of the chosen
:02:08. > :02:13.fruit -- the chosen few. Here is what is coming up this evening. We
:02:14. > :02:21.are sliding fast, with the legend of luge. Staying on ice, figure
:02:22. > :02:27.skating's team event reaches a crucial stage. And, we are live
:02:28. > :02:34.under the floodlights for the women's moguls final. So, plenty
:02:35. > :02:39.still to come, but first, the men's slopestyle, a new event, the
:02:40. > :02:44.snowboarders got their chance this morning, it was full of big tricks
:02:45. > :02:49.and funky falls. We had two British competitors, Jamie Nicholls and
:02:50. > :02:53.Billy Morgan, and here is a round-up of what happened.
:02:54. > :03:00.It will be the best school from the two runs that counts. The American,
:03:01. > :03:12.one of the most creative, stylish riders. He has laid down the run he
:03:13. > :03:24.was looking for. Billy Morgan, the boy from Southampton. Oh, no! The
:03:25. > :03:37.next rider, Jamie Nicholls. One two, three, four, yes! He puts it down!
:03:38. > :03:49.And absolutely stonking run! Clean, clinical through the rails. Really
:03:50. > :04:03.deep, really clean. Now, Billy Morgan's second run. Oh, no! It is
:04:04. > :04:08.not over for Great Britain. He has slipped off the side of the rail.
:04:09. > :04:17.Can he complete the whole run this time? He is in danger of melting if
:04:18. > :04:26.he gets any smoother. Second place! It is the first gold medal of Sochi
:04:27. > :04:28.2014, it goes to America. Jamie Nicholls in sixth, Billy Morgan
:04:29. > :04:36.intent. Can we breathe now? Slopestyle a huge hit with the
:04:37. > :04:43.viewers, the commentary going down very well. Two historic points to
:04:44. > :04:47.make, for the USA, because this is the first time they have competed on
:04:48. > :04:51.Russian soil, that is the first gold medal but have one on Russian soil,
:04:52. > :04:57.and then medal ceremony took place a short while ago. For Jamie Nicholls,
:04:58. > :05:02.Britain's best result on snow since 1968, but you will know that Alan
:05:03. > :05:07.Baxter had a short lived bronze medal in 2002. Let's have a look at
:05:08. > :05:19.the other headline makers on the first day. It has been a great day
:05:20. > :05:23.for Norway, at 40 years of age, a to become the joint most decorated
:05:24. > :05:29.Winter Olympian ever. He won the ten K biathlon sprint, and earlier, the
:05:30. > :05:35.fellow Norwegian won her fourth Olympic gold, with the women's 50
:05:36. > :05:44.K. She is known as the iron Lady. She got the better of her Swedish
:05:45. > :05:51.opponent in the closing stages. A gold medal in a new Olympic record.
:05:52. > :05:54.The flying Dutchman led the way for a Netherlands clean sweep of the
:05:55. > :05:57.medals. The head of the men's downhill tomorrow, the five-time
:05:58. > :06:06.Olympic medallist has said that the Sochi twig's pieced is treacherous
:06:07. > :06:09.and could kill you if you do not pay attention. He was shaken after
:06:10. > :06:14.seeing his team-mate narrowly escaped a serious crash. We will get
:06:15. > :06:19.more on that course with Graham Bell, who has gone down it, with a
:06:20. > :06:24.camera on his helmet. We will ask him about the reaction of the other
:06:25. > :06:29.big-name skiers. We will concentrate now on luge. We will mind you what
:06:30. > :07:05.happens. First staged in 1964, it is one of
:07:06. > :07:09.the fastest and most exciting of the Olympic sports. Similar to skeleton,
:07:10. > :07:15.the sleds are lightning quick and can reach speeds of 90 mph. With the
:07:16. > :07:22.sport timed to 1000th of a second, a power. Is crucial. Lucius begin
:07:23. > :07:27.their burn sat upright, paddling the ice with spiked gloves to build up
:07:28. > :07:29.speed. Woods in an ever dynamic position, they controlled direction
:07:30. > :07:35.by manoeuvring their shoulders and legs. The men's and women's singles
:07:36. > :07:44.competitions are held over two days, with four runs in total. The
:07:45. > :07:47.lowest overall time wins. Georg hackle dominated in the 90s, with
:07:48. > :08:03.three consecutive gold medals. This is where the sliding centre
:08:04. > :08:09.is, in the Mountain Cluster, 40 minutes away. The favourite is the
:08:10. > :08:14.German, Felix Loch, the former double gold medallist. Armin
:08:15. > :08:19.Zoeggeler aiming for a place in history, because he would be the
:08:20. > :08:21.first athlete to win a medal in six different Winter Olympics. No
:08:22. > :08:27.British competitors involved, but we have our commentary team.
:08:28. > :08:38.Biochem to the Sanki Sliding Centre. -- welcome. Way above the rest of
:08:39. > :08:47.the Olympic Village. The first of two runs of the men's luge. The
:08:48. > :08:58.fifth corner is one of the trickiest. It is an S-bend. The 10th
:08:59. > :09:13.corner, uphill, and a third uphill sexton -- section. The speeds here,
:09:14. > :09:19.136.8 kilometres per hour, 85 mph. Having a look at the first
:09:20. > :09:24.competitor, Dominik Fischnaller, the former World Junior Championship. 20
:09:25. > :09:32.years old, this is a big moment in his life. His mental is Armin
:09:33. > :09:42.Zoeggeler, who will be going later on. It is not a flat spot or a steep
:09:43. > :09:45.start, somewhere in between. He is going faster than he did in
:09:46. > :09:53.training, the ice is primed and ready. Dominik Fischnaller flying
:09:54. > :10:02.down this hill. He looks pretty good so far. That is the first of the
:10:03. > :10:07.uphill sections. The little widening is the eighth corner, then a big
:10:08. > :10:17.left-hander. We have seen crash there in the bobsleigh. Corner ten
:10:18. > :10:25.is the trickiest bit of the track. Through the final two right-handers,
:10:26. > :10:35.it is not great speed. He has got it up to 135. That is a decent time.
:10:36. > :10:42.Looking good. A very good run from Dominik Fischnaller. Wolfgang Kindl
:10:43. > :10:52.is up next. Let's see how many paddles he does. Five. Very close to
:10:53. > :11:01.the left-hand upright. He gets away well. He is not a big man, one metre
:11:02. > :11:05.66, 70 kilograms, one of the lightest men in the competition, but
:11:06. > :11:12.he seems to get good top end speed, which is surprising. He was always
:11:13. > :11:16.going to be behind Dominik Fischnaller at the start. He has
:11:17. > :11:25.gone into the lead, he has gone ahead of Dominik Fischnaller.
:11:26. > :11:32.Wolfgang Kindl is going well. He is flying. Not one touch either side.
:11:33. > :11:51.Very good. He has pulled it out in the big one,
:11:52. > :11:56.0.4 faster than training. A bit sloppy at the start, but he is in
:11:57. > :12:04.the league, a great start. Reinhard Egger next ago. It is interesting
:12:05. > :12:11.that he has got a face mask with the line on it. That is for his view. If
:12:12. > :12:17.he can look under the line, he knows his head is right back, it is to
:12:18. > :12:24.keep aerodynamic form. A good start, he is one of the big surprises from
:12:25. > :12:29.training, he is a big man, 98 kilos. In luge, the bigger you are, the
:12:30. > :12:35.faster you fall, you have momentum. He is in the lead. Trying to stay in
:12:36. > :12:43.the middle, that is the important thing. He is doing it well. He is
:12:44. > :12:56.losing time over Wolfgang Kindl. Can he stay in front? Still in the lead,
:12:57. > :13:02.just. Goodness me, even faster than Felix Loch managed in training.
:13:03. > :13:05.Reinhard Egger has nailed that. That is the fastest run we have seen down
:13:06. > :13:12.this track ever. That is quite something. The eyes of the Siberian
:13:13. > :13:27.tiger! The local hero, the Russian hero. Albert Demchenko. This Russian
:13:28. > :13:40.giant. For so long, he has been top of the leaderboard. He gets away
:13:41. > :13:50.well. He will take that. He is 42 years old. He will be behind here.
:13:51. > :13:56.But there is lots of track here. It was almost built for him, this
:13:57. > :14:00.track, maybe it was! He is an Olympic silver medallist from 2006,
:14:01. > :14:10.a big hero, and he has gone into the lead. The fastest we have seen so
:14:11. > :14:20.far. He is flying here. He has increased his lead. He is going
:14:21. > :14:30.well. 139.1 kilometres per hour, that is phenomenal. 87 mph. A track
:14:31. > :14:34.record. Look at the margin, almost 0.4 seconds. He has laid down the
:14:35. > :14:41.law, but his phenomenal. The Russians are enjoying this. There is
:14:42. > :14:47.only one man in the world who can do better than that, the Olympic
:14:48. > :14:57.champion himself. Unless Armin Zoeggeler can spin his magic. The
:14:58. > :15:00.Olympic champion in 2002 and 2006, what can Armin Zoeggeler produce
:15:01. > :15:11.here? The way goes one of the old man. It could be good. It is good. A
:15:12. > :15:16.tremendous start from Zoeggeler but has has gone green because it has
:15:17. > :15:20.been compared to Demchenko who is not a great starter but has put down
:15:21. > :15:28.a great run so compared to the best so far. Remember, Zoeggeler has won
:15:29. > :15:32.five medals over the past five Olympics. If he were to do it again
:15:33. > :15:37.here, he would become the most decorated Olympian of all time
:15:38. > :15:43.across six games. He is losing time here.
:15:44. > :16:00.A decent speed and it leaves him in second place, he might be a country
:16:01. > :16:05.mile behind Demchenko but he is ahead of the rest of the world. That
:16:06. > :16:11.is true. He must be very disappointed though, and Felix Loch
:16:12. > :16:19.is the elliptic champion from four years ago. -- the Olympic champion.
:16:20. > :16:25.What can this rate man do? -- this great man.
:16:26. > :16:32.He is so tall, long arms and big paddles. And he has gone into the
:16:33. > :16:44.lead by over six hundredths of a second. He is about six foot four
:16:45. > :16:50.and a big, bulky man like Demchenko. Demchenko add such good speed.
:16:51. > :16:56.Demchenko will be sweating just waiting at the bottom but Felix Loch
:16:57. > :17:02.is flying at the moment, and even quicker than Demchenko. If you can
:17:03. > :17:10.hold this league, the next bit will be crucial.
:17:11. > :17:18.Felix Loch is coming through the line now. Look at that, goodness
:17:19. > :17:24.me, there is his dad, head of the German federation, I have not seen a
:17:25. > :17:27.face like that for years from him. He was a favourite for the Germans
:17:28. > :17:45.but not at the moment after the first run, he is behind Demchenko.
:17:46. > :17:56.22 years old, Peretyagin, hopefully the occasion would overwhelm him. 20
:17:57. > :18:00.years younger than Demchenko, the third Russian to get the nod for
:18:01. > :18:03.this Olympics. Let's not forget the Russians have had a lot of extra
:18:04. > :18:09.sliding time on this track that others have not had. If the others
:18:10. > :18:15.have had 30 or 40 runs down the track, they have had about 400
:18:16. > :18:19.runs. Put them in good stead. Lots of people have been saying that
:18:20. > :18:26.Demchenko had this track built for him. In order to win the gold medal.
:18:27. > :18:33.That is some way away yet but there are lots of people who believe that
:18:34. > :18:42.Demchenko is destined to win. Age and this speed here. Peretyagin only
:18:43. > :18:46.half a second behind Demchenko, a massive margin but for the rest of
:18:47. > :18:51.the world, to third place in the podium behind Zoeggeler, he is
:18:52. > :18:57.exactly 11 hundredths of a second behind so he is in with a shout here
:18:58. > :19:05.and in the mix. There are the standings at the moment. Demchenko
:19:06. > :19:10.ahead of Felix Loch and Zoeggeler, and that is fantastic.
:19:11. > :19:16.Many thanks to Paul and Colin Bryce, the second run is under way and you
:19:17. > :19:19.can watch it live on the red button and we will update you later on in
:19:20. > :19:24.the highlights programme but I want to take you over here because that
:19:25. > :19:28.beautiful view Dylan McGeouch blue building is the Iceberg Skating
:19:29. > :19:32.Palace and is home to the figure skating and Sue Barker and Robin
:19:33. > :19:35.Cousins will stop we have a new competition at the Winter Olympics
:19:36. > :19:39.this year, called the team competition and not surprisingly,
:19:40. > :19:43.Russia are among the favourites to win the gold. Let's look at how it
:19:44. > :19:48.works. The team event is a new addition to
:19:49. > :19:57.the Olympic Games. Teams are made up of one man, one woman, one pair and
:19:58. > :20:00.one ice dance couple. As in the other figure skating events, the
:20:01. > :20:05.competition is split into two segments, a short programme and a
:20:06. > :20:08.free programme. Ten teams take part in the short programme where each
:20:09. > :20:17.routine must contain a set list of moves. A panel of nine judges score
:20:18. > :20:20.on choreography and technique. Their marks are converted into points and
:20:21. > :20:26.the four scores for each team are added together. The top five teams
:20:27. > :20:29.from the first segment then qualify for the free programme. That is
:20:30. > :20:34.where skaters are allowed to show more creative licence. The team with
:20:35. > :20:40.the most points after the two segments wins gold.
:20:41. > :20:46.And this is how the standings is looked after the pairs in the men's
:20:47. > :20:50.short programme, Russia lead with Canada and China completing the
:20:51. > :20:53.medal places. The USA, surprisingly down in seventh place. We'll now see
:20:54. > :20:58.highlights from this afternoon's competition, the ice dance and the
:20:59. > :21:02.women's short programmes and first up are Britain's Penny Coomes and
:21:03. > :21:10.Nick Buckland. Sue Barker and Robin Cousins describe the action.
:21:11. > :21:15.Here they are, Penny Coomes, Nicolas Buckland. Doesn't she look
:21:16. > :21:22.exquisite? Nice through the testing section. --
:21:23. > :22:09.twisting. This is a copy what I was just
:22:10. > :22:12.saying, nice and light and lots of little lifts between the elements
:22:13. > :23:27.and be jumping, it is nice and tight.
:23:28. > :23:31.Lovely lightness through the circular steps sequence. This is
:23:32. > :24:11.pretty special. Very nice, they were so good in
:24:12. > :24:14.practice, they brought that through to competition with a fantastic
:24:15. > :24:20.performance, rate reception from the crowd here, well done to Penny and
:24:21. > :24:22.Nick. Beautiful, nice and smooth, not rushed, everything just slightly
:24:23. > :24:31.laid-back but exactly on the beat where it needed to be. Good through
:24:32. > :24:36.the twists, nice timing. Heals up, lovely, lifting so you can see
:24:37. > :24:42.there's air between the blades on the movement in the footwork.
:24:43. > :24:50.What will be judges reward them with? One deduction there but
:24:51. > :24:55.52.93. What do you think the deduction was four, the extended
:24:56. > :25:00.lead? Possibly in the extended left. It is not obvious that they
:25:01. > :25:04.try to figure it out but it must be the lift.
:25:05. > :25:12.Meryl Davis and Charlie White, they have been a powerhouse in ice
:25:13. > :25:16.dancing, favourites to become the first Americans to win ice dancing
:25:17. > :25:21.gold, that will be later on in the week.
:25:22. > :26:57.MUSIC: "I Could Have Danced All Night".
:26:58. > :28:22.Very nice, the extended twizzle exit.
:28:23. > :28:28.Oh, yes, indeed! They could have danced all night and we would have
:28:29. > :28:36.loved watching them carry on. It just was not long enough, beautiful
:28:37. > :28:43.to watch. Nice light and airy through the step sequence.
:28:44. > :28:52.Doesn't get deep into the eyes, they don't get down and drive, it's just
:28:53. > :28:59.schemes, Twizell, one, two is two. It is lovely.
:29:00. > :29:07.75.98, great technical presentation, wonderful performance
:29:08. > :29:14.from them. America are back in this team competition. They win this ice
:29:15. > :29:18.dance, short dance and they win ten points, so that puts the United
:29:19. > :29:29.States into third place overall behind Canada and Russia. So here
:29:30. > :29:35.are the scores from the short dance, the Americans first, the Canadian
:29:36. > :29:38.second and the Russians third. Disappointing for the British
:29:39. > :29:40.couple, Penny Coomes and Nicolas Buckland, not so much the placement
:29:41. > :29:49.but more the score. So that win for the USA sees them
:29:50. > :29:52.jump to third place overall after three events, Russia are still on
:29:53. > :29:56.top, one point ahead of Canada going into the women's short programme
:29:57. > :30:01.which will now join starting with Britain's Jenna McCorkell.
:30:02. > :30:06.So, Jenna McCorkell, she will retire at the end of this season and really
:30:07. > :30:28.wants to take some happy memories away from here.
:30:29. > :30:49.She wants the triple flip. Lovely, very nice.
:30:50. > :32:53.A really nice double axel, very strong.
:32:54. > :33:00.Well done, Jenna McCorkell! She celebrates, she has done Northern
:33:01. > :33:05.Ireland proud with that, fantastic. Everything delivered, you can take a
:33:06. > :33:15.bow, fantastic performance. She is coming from the old school. You can
:33:16. > :33:23.see that it did not get to a full position. The spin is a level two,
:33:24. > :33:32.but we have to look at this as an overall picture. She could not have
:33:33. > :33:40.done it any better. So, the marks. Surely, a season's best. By some
:33:41. > :33:45.way, we hope. By a long way! A season's best for her, wonderful
:33:46. > :33:51.scores in the technical and the components cool. Great smiles from
:33:52. > :33:55.the British camp. They may not play any further part in the team event,
:33:56. > :34:01.which it can look forward to the ladies event, a super programme,
:34:02. > :34:10.well done. So many people have been waiting to see this young lady, the
:34:11. > :34:17.Russian. The European champion, the youngest winner of the European
:34:18. > :34:21.Championships ever. At the European Championships, things have not gone
:34:22. > :34:26.well in practice, but for the competition, she delivered, and that
:34:27. > :34:28.is what makes her a champion. She has youth, fearlessness, and she is
:34:29. > :35:03.on home ice. Russian champion. A forward inside edge on the
:35:04. > :36:21.inverted Biellmann. Third jump from steps is a triple
:36:22. > :37:29.flip. Everybody standing around this
:37:30. > :37:34.auditorium, 15 years of age, we said she may be a superstar in the
:37:35. > :37:38.making, but she is a superstar now. Applause from the commentary box,
:37:39. > :37:45.you do not often see that. From all around us. Super jumps, exquisite
:37:46. > :37:53.spins, she is a ballerina on the ice. Her first Olympic Games, no
:37:54. > :38:06.sign of nerves. Her debut year, at her home, at the Olympics, much
:38:07. > :38:14.pressure? A triple toe loop. The double axel has a terrible take-off,
:38:15. > :38:23.the leg does not even pass the left leg on the take-off, so that will
:38:24. > :38:25.not triple axel very easily. There is not much to say about the spins,
:38:26. > :38:39.because you can see it. The foot is not touching. The right
:38:40. > :38:49.foot is lifted off the ice to make sure she does not get any
:38:50. > :38:50.deduction, it is clean. A new season's best, look at those
:38:51. > :39:06.scores! She can still improve on the
:39:07. > :39:15.technical. They are the favourites for the gold medal. Now, onto the
:39:16. > :39:23.ice, the birthday girl, from Italy. She has had two miserable Olympic
:39:24. > :39:27.experiences, ninth in curing, and this gives her a chance to get used
:39:28. > :39:38.to the ice. She has changed her routine, who are they the rear, --
:39:39. > :40:10.to Ave Maria. She is a beautiful skater to watch, enjoy.
:40:11. > :40:30.She has got the triple toe loop. Very nice, light and easy.
:40:31. > :42:40.Absolutely exquisite. She is a skater that oozes class. She may not
:42:41. > :42:44.be the most consistent on the ice, but when she gets it right, it is
:42:45. > :42:49.breathtaking, and that piece of music is perfect for her. That is
:42:50. > :42:57.the best I have seen her skate in a very long time. This loop was
:42:58. > :43:05.exquisite. Lovely. Really nicely rotated, the double axel does not
:43:06. > :43:12.normally fly that much, bigger than I have normally seen, a very nice
:43:13. > :43:21.extension out. They of the Swatch from the Italian team. Yes! A new
:43:22. > :43:29.season's best, well-deserved. That puts Italy ahead of France, they
:43:30. > :43:32.will qualify in the top five. Their pairs team will be preparing, they
:43:33. > :43:33.will be on the ice later today. A beautiful way to end this
:43:34. > :43:40.competition. The second round gets under way just
:43:41. > :43:51.after 6:05pm. Yulia Lipnitskaya taking the victory
:43:52. > :43:54.in the short programme, and Carolina Kostner moved Italy into the final
:43:55. > :43:59.qualifying spot. Jenna McCorkell finished in 10th place, Redbridge
:44:00. > :44:05.and did not qualify for the final rounds. We will update this in our
:44:06. > :44:09.highlights programme, which starts at 7pm.
:44:10. > :44:17.I have made some friends here. They are over here as medical volunteers.
:44:18. > :44:21.We are loving Sochi, we went to London, we volunteered there, we had
:44:22. > :44:30.such a good experience, we thought we would try Russia. Is it better
:44:31. > :44:33.than you thought's --? Yes, there is no problem with security, the food
:44:34. > :44:40.is lovely, we are having a great time. The outfits suit you! Thank
:44:41. > :44:46.you so much, good luck with the rest of the Winter Olympics. Time to head
:44:47. > :44:54.away from this loud music, for more loud music, and this.
:44:55. > :45:17.her home, at the Olympics, much pressure? A triple toe loop. It is
:45:18. > :45:20.fast and furious, combination of speed and style and it happens here
:45:21. > :45:28.at the freestyle centre, part of the extreme part. A family from Canada
:45:29. > :45:35.will be hoping to pack the podium, the Russians have always celebrated
:45:36. > :45:38.the play the three cities Berlin macro sisters by Anton Chekhov but
:45:39. > :45:43.we have three sisters who are more successful, let's meet them.
:45:44. > :45:46.COMMENTATOR: Maxine, first of three sisters bidding for a place in the
:45:47. > :45:56.Olympic final, this is just Dean. This is the meddling sister, Chloe.
:45:57. > :46:19.It will be busy and loud and could yet be a family affair, we will see,
:46:20. > :46:29.here's a guide the moguls. A mogul course is made up of a
:46:30. > :46:34.series of snow bumps on a steep slope. The key to a smooth ride is
:46:35. > :46:39.to pick your line through the whole course, not focus solely on the next
:46:40. > :46:43.bump. It is also important to control your speed and get into a
:46:44. > :46:46.good rhythm. There are two significant jumps on the course and
:46:47. > :46:54.skiers must perform to different manoeuvres. The jumps account for
:46:55. > :46:59.25% of the score. Half of the marks are for turning technique, and the
:47:00. > :47:00.rest of the markets for speed. The top 20 from qualifying make it
:47:01. > :47:10.through to the final. You need good knees, you really do,
:47:11. > :47:16.for this sport. It is the women's mogul final and let's head straight
:47:17. > :47:25.to our commentators will stop, , there is a macro three phases of
:47:26. > :47:28.this final on this ten metre wide course.
:47:29. > :47:40.It is a black run, peppered with these moguls or bumps, you would
:47:41. > :47:47.avoid them if you were skiing recreationally. Over three phases,
:47:48. > :47:50.20 to start with. They will be whittled down to 12, the 12 best
:47:51. > :47:56.going through to go again and then six will go through for the medals.
:47:57. > :48:01.Any score they picked up in the first two rounds are discarded, it
:48:02. > :48:06.is a fresh canvas for the next two rounds. And here is the line-up,
:48:07. > :48:12.plenty of Russians, three Australians, two Japanese and three
:48:13. > :48:19.Americans including Hannah Carney, the defending champion who will be
:48:20. > :48:25.last to go. And the three sisters, Dufour-Lapointe, just Dean who is
:48:26. > :48:32.19, and Chloe who is 22. The last time there were three sisters in an
:48:33. > :48:38.Olympic event was back in 1960 when they competed for France in the
:48:39. > :48:43.women's slalom. We hope for better luck for the ten two sisters tonight
:48:44. > :48:47.and judging by recent form, there is every chance that we will see one,
:48:48. > :48:50.possibly two of them, maybe even three of them on the Olympic podium
:48:51. > :48:57.tonight. The judges are lined up tonight and it will be one of the
:48:58. > :49:04.Russians to get things going so a combination of terms, jumps and
:49:05. > :49:08.speed, the pace time, 30.12 seconds. And the first compulsory click here
:49:09. > :49:13.you can see, at the top of the course and then the main bulk of the
:49:14. > :49:23.course between the two jumps, accounting for 50% of the score. 20
:49:24. > :49:29.metres wide, 240 metres in length. 20 athletes about to go bidding for
:49:30. > :49:38.12 places in the second round of the final. Gloves going on for the
:49:39. > :49:44.Russian, Pertakhiya. She can't help but smile with all the noise below,
:49:45. > :49:50.the only Italian in the final pacing up and down. They have had a long
:49:51. > :49:55.wait since the second qualifying round earlier this afternoon but now
:49:56. > :50:02.in pitch black with the floodlights illuminating this course.
:50:03. > :50:13.The Olympic final will be opened by Pertakhiya from Russia. She gets the
:50:14. > :50:19.count under way she goes. Straight into the rhythm of because, nine
:50:20. > :50:20.turns and before the first kicker, a 300 cc, good landing and back into
:50:21. > :50:42.the rhythm. She is maintaining control, a
:50:43. > :50:48.backflip and solid landing, just about recovered, I thought she would
:50:49. > :50:53.exit through the front door. That could prove costly, the only thing
:50:54. > :50:57.in her favour is that the jumps only account for 25% of the mark. The
:50:58. > :51:01.terms which account for 50% were pretty solid. She takes a seat and
:51:02. > :51:05.is joined by the Russian coach will be busy tonight with three Russians
:51:06. > :51:13.in this final, this was the first jump, . It will not take along to
:51:14. > :51:16.re-establish her rhythm. Look at the knees working. The skis needed to be
:51:17. > :51:20.locked together and they were separated by about a foot at times.
:51:21. > :51:27.That will not work in her favour. The second job, the backflip. Nice
:51:28. > :51:31.and straight but then she got pitched forward and she was lucky to
:51:32. > :51:37.stand and ski away. She might be lucky to make the top 12 who
:51:38. > :51:43.advanced to the next round of this final of the moguls. Maria
:51:44. > :51:53.Pertakhiya unlikely to score more than 20 points with that. 17.58.
:51:54. > :51:57.That will be a long and nervous wait now.
:51:58. > :52:04.A good crowd here this evening, they are crammed in. We had to the top
:52:05. > :52:15.for the only Chinese representative in this competition it is the second
:52:16. > :52:20.is to go, Ning Qin who gets the three, two, one call and she comes
:52:21. > :52:28.off by curvy little ledge at the top, and she has to recover and a
:52:29. > :52:34.couple of seconds when she was a passenger there. Rather than being
:52:35. > :52:41.in full control. Now she is settled but it wasn't at the top, not a
:52:42. > :52:48.solid enough middle section to put pressure on the best in the world.
:52:49. > :52:54.It is a full twisting backflip, lands it and skis home and a mixed
:52:55. > :53:00.bag therefore the Chinese bump skier. Decent aerials, the degree of
:53:01. > :53:08.difficulty was quite high on second job as well. A full twisting back
:53:09. > :53:14.somersault. This is the first, 360. It is to be called a helicopter but
:53:15. > :53:17.a 360 is a fickle it these days. And then it was good and slide -- a 360
:53:18. > :53:33.is what they call it these days. The second job, taking her time --
:53:34. > :53:38.jump. Full twisting back somersault. And the landing was OK. She lent
:53:39. > :53:43.slightly over the tales of her skis on touchdown but pretty solid.
:53:44. > :53:57.She is likely to be under 20 points again for Ning Qin of China. And she
:53:58. > :54:00.has got 17.26. Only good enough for second at the moment, she will have
:54:01. > :54:05.to see if that is good enough to see her through to the top 12, I doubt
:54:06. > :54:11.it. First of the Australians, this is Nicole Parks from New South
:54:12. > :54:17.Wales. A look of concentration on her face. She has skied cautiously
:54:18. > :54:25.so far I know is the time to let them go.
:54:26. > :54:30.She is starting to really accelerate through the money turns, she has got
:54:31. > :54:37.a good line and she looks good, good work so far from Nicole Parks.
:54:38. > :54:43.Spectacular skiing from the first of the trio of Australians to go. She
:54:44. > :54:50.set up for the second jump, full back somersault and home and dry,
:54:51. > :54:55.that will be good enough for first position provisionally for Nicole
:54:56. > :55:02.Parks from Australia. Skiing in her first Olympic Winter Games. Things
:55:03. > :55:06.started pretty well, this was the first jump, 360. There is a little
:55:07. > :55:11.gap before the moguls reappear, a soft landing which has been softened
:55:12. > :55:19.even further by the coursework is this evening, these were good
:55:20. > :55:26.turns. The knees and skis locked together, took back somersault. That
:55:27. > :55:30.will be good enough for first position for Nicole Parks, surely.
:55:31. > :55:37.Her coach is looking on in passively.
:55:38. > :55:45.High marks and low marks from the terms judges discarded, Nicole Parks
:55:46. > :55:51.takes it away from the Russian, Pertakhiya. We have another
:55:52. > :56:06.Australian coming, straightaway it is O'Neill from Sydney. Her first
:56:07. > :56:24.the big aims, -- a place in the top 12 of four stakes -- up for grabs.
:56:25. > :56:33.Couple of scrappy moments here from Taylah O'Neill, these are good
:56:34. > :56:36.turns. The skis are locked together like they are glued together and the
:56:37. > :56:40.knees absorbing thrusting up to the chest as she pummels through the
:56:41. > :56:49.turns. A back somersault, lands it, the skis and completes. Beyond the
:56:50. > :56:54.pace time of 30 point 12. Looks like we will have an Australian one, two.
:56:55. > :56:59.Dufour-Lapointe, the second of the three Australians to go. And the
:57:00. > :57:08.third of them coming shortly will be Brittany Cox. Slightly unsteady on
:57:09. > :57:13.landing but managed to regain her balance by the time the moguls
:57:14. > :57:18.reappeared after this flat section on landing. Slightly off-putting for
:57:19. > :57:23.the skiers really although it is there because the men will get so
:57:24. > :57:28.much greater distance and they will fly the entirely of that landing
:57:29. > :57:32.area and beyond. The men's competition on Monday. That should
:57:33. > :57:38.be good enough for second place for Taylah O'Neill. And yes, it is,
:57:39. > :57:46.18.18. So the Aussies are holding first and second. Next to go, the
:57:47. > :57:56.first of the Americans, Heather McPhie from Park City in Utah. She
:57:57. > :58:04.just breathes deeply and looks down the hill.
:58:05. > :58:13.18th last time out in Vancouver. She did well with her first landing,
:58:14. > :58:19.managed to get back in control and this is solid from Heather McPhie.
:58:20. > :58:26.Now we are seeing the top skiers go to work here. Beautiful work from
:58:27. > :58:36.Heather McPhie. A full twisting back, pretty good. 30.24. Quickest
:58:37. > :58:41.of the lot of the clock and that, I think, will probably be good enough
:58:42. > :58:45.for the provisional lead. She is happy with that, the American,
:58:46. > :58:54.Heather McPhie. They have got the defending champion last to go in
:58:55. > :58:58.this first phase of the women's bumps final. It did not take long,
:58:59. > :59:05.just absorb the first mogul after landing, the central turns were
:59:06. > :59:10.great to watch, wonderful control and flair from Heather McPhie and
:59:11. > :59:17.that will surely be good enough for first position provisionally. Full
:59:18. > :59:22.twisting back somersault and a little cross of the skis mid-flight
:59:23. > :59:29.as well, could be the first to break the 20 point mark tonight. And yes
:59:30. > :59:36.she has, just, 20.05. First position, new leader, Heather McPhie
:59:37. > :59:42.for the USA. Things warming up nicely here on the Rosa mogul field.
:59:43. > :59:46.A busy day at the extreme Park with the inaugural men's slopestyle and
:59:47. > :59:52.now the bumps. A hot ticket to have here. The last of the Australian
:59:53. > :00:01.trio, Brittany Cox. Clear lenses in her goggles, nine turns before she
:00:02. > :00:02.hits the first kicker and it is a straight 364 Cox. Right back into
:00:03. > :00:14.the rhythm. Really enjoying this run, looked
:00:15. > :00:23.good in the first qualification round earlier. This is even better.
:00:24. > :00:29.A straight back somersault, full control all the way down, the speed
:00:30. > :00:33.is good as well. She will be close to Heather McPhie's lead. It will be
:00:34. > :00:36.first or second, provisionally, at the moment, for the last of the
:00:37. > :00:50.Australians. He do not want the scheme is coming
:00:51. > :00:57.off! Lots to enjoy, high, floated 360, pretty straightforward. The
:00:58. > :01:03.landing was OK. The terms in the central part of the course, they
:01:04. > :01:05.were generally solid enough, one or two little mistakes. Enough to take
:01:06. > :01:21.the lead? Possibly. One for the line, as it first or
:01:22. > :01:27.second? It is first. The top 12 go through to the next phase, and then
:01:28. > :01:28.the numbers are half a game, six to battle for the medals in the final
:01:29. > :01:46.stage. Now, from the Czech Republic. She
:01:47. > :01:51.skied really well earlier today to qualify, I was really impressed by
:01:52. > :02:00.the way she attacked the course. She has started in a similar vein here.
:02:01. > :02:06.360 with a spread halfway round. Wonderful confidence, this is
:02:07. > :02:12.excellent. If she nails the last few terms and the second kicker, this is
:02:13. > :02:16.surely good enough for the lead in the Olympic final first stage.
:02:17. > :02:23.Nothing wrong with this Tom at the speed is good as well. As far as I
:02:24. > :02:30.am concerned, that is surely good enough for first place. The standard
:02:31. > :02:41.rising all the time. Putting one down here tonight. Spread Eagle
:02:42. > :02:48.halfway. Back into the rhythm of the course. It is worth seeing again.
:02:49. > :02:55.Look at how quickly she got back into absorption on landing. Got to
:02:56. > :03:03.be worthy of a school in the early 20s. Yes, that was really good. No
:03:04. > :03:08.wonder the courage is pleased. A lot of work to do, because this score
:03:09. > :03:24.will be discarded for the second stage. She takes it away. A new
:03:25. > :03:30.leader. Next, the Italian. In her third Olympic Games. She finished
:03:31. > :03:38.ninth in 2006. She finished 10th in Vancouver 2010. Here we go. She
:03:39. > :03:42.needs to move it up a notch or two, following her performance in
:03:43. > :03:51.qualifying earlier. She is a passenger there. She gathers it back
:03:52. > :03:55.under her control. It looks spectacular for the crowd, but it
:03:56. > :04:04.will not impress the judges. She is looking pretty confident now. A
:04:05. > :04:10.backflip of the first, and she skis with the fastest time of the night
:04:11. > :04:19.so far. Inside the pace time, 30.12 seconds. The first one to go under
:04:20. > :04:25.30 seconds. A top three place, I would think, certain. One or two
:04:26. > :04:30.moments with the skis in the middle part of the course, that the judges
:04:31. > :04:37.would have frowned upon, we will see it here, the flared out right ski.
:04:38. > :04:44.Packet came. The damage done, how much damage? Top three, surely,
:04:45. > :04:51.still merited. A chance of progressing through to the group of
:04:52. > :05:02.12 who will move around to the second stage of the final. Is it
:05:03. > :05:09.first, second or third? It is third. She will have to sweat it out for a
:05:10. > :05:20.while yet. Number 19. The next of the Russians. From Moscow
:05:21. > :05:27.originally. Trying to block out the noise and colours at the bottom of
:05:28. > :05:35.the course and go to work. She can celebrate later. Now is the time to
:05:36. > :05:45.focus. 360. A good landing. The best landing we have seen from her so far
:05:46. > :05:51.today. She is going nicely. Listen to the noise now. She attacks the
:05:52. > :06:01.bottom part of the course. A backflip. She has hit the deck hard.
:06:02. > :06:07.That will be that. It is pretty cut-throat, this process, only 12
:06:08. > :06:17.will go through, and she will not be one of them. Hopefully, she is OK,
:06:18. > :06:24.but it will be a lonely time in the kiss and cry area. A 360 of the
:06:25. > :06:33.first jump, back into the rhythm straightaway. The central terms were
:06:34. > :06:38.terrific. But then, trouble arrived at the second compulsory kicker. She
:06:39. > :06:48.went high and round, but too far around, she landed on the tales.
:06:49. > :06:55.Whiplash. So, the school coming through.
:06:56. > :07:09.The damage is done. She will be lucky to feature in amongst the top
:07:10. > :07:17.eight. She is trying to smile through the pain. Heavily penalised
:07:18. > :07:28.by the finish and Canadian judges, but the Russians get another grow --
:07:29. > :07:35.another go straightaway. She gripped the poles. Here we go. She is ready
:07:36. > :07:42.to go. The best of the Russians currently in seventh place. The
:07:43. > :07:45.landing is OK. Back into the rhythm. She took a couple of seconds to move
:07:46. > :07:55.through the bumps, but now she is motoring. This is good. A nice line.
:07:56. > :08:01.Not too much width with the arms. The second kicker coming. Up she
:08:02. > :08:11.goes, backflip, down she goes, lands safely. The Russians celebrate
:08:12. > :08:17.another good run. They can forget about the disappointment suffered by
:08:18. > :08:26.the previous skier. She has given them something to get excited about.
:08:27. > :08:34.The leading school belongs to the Czech Republic skier. 21.82. The
:08:35. > :08:38.Russian will be lucky to beat that, but she might just get in amongst
:08:39. > :08:46.the top four, maybe the top three places. A score above 20 is
:08:47. > :08:54.guaranteed. The second jump, straight, moved the knees towards
:08:55. > :08:56.the body for the second part. It has got to be in the top four. It is
:08:57. > :09:08.second. With nine to go, she is guaranteed a
:09:09. > :09:16.place in the next phase of the final. Now, the Canadian attack
:09:17. > :09:22.begins. We have four Canadians in this final, including the three
:09:23. > :09:31.sisters. The first of those will come next. First, their compatriot,
:09:32. > :09:36.from Quebec, Audrey Robichaud. Eighth in 2006, she is back for
:09:37. > :09:41.another Olympics. Here she goes. She skied beautifully in qualification
:09:42. > :09:46.on Thursday. A 360, pretty solid, just a little mistake post landing.
:09:47. > :09:51.But now she seems to have settled. Coming down the centre line. She is
:09:52. > :09:58.going nicely. Not as fast as we have seen from some will stop the turns
:09:59. > :10:05.are textbook. She is carving beautifully. It is a backflip, it is
:10:06. > :10:10.a good landing, it is a good run, it is slow. It is one of the slowest of
:10:11. > :10:17.the evenings so far. She shakes her head, I am not sure she is happy,
:10:18. > :10:20.but there were elements to enjoy for Audrey Robichaud. The first of four
:10:21. > :10:33.Canadians. Here is the first kicker. Leaning
:10:34. > :10:38.with her right arm, rotating her head to help turn the body through
:10:39. > :10:45.the 360. Nice turns, nice and relaxed. Audrey Robichaud suddenly
:10:46. > :10:50.on course for a top five. That will not be enough to guarantee a place
:10:51. > :10:58.in the next phase of the final. Because we still have eight skiers
:10:59. > :11:04.to come, including the 360 's. Chloe, Justine and Maxime
:11:05. > :11:13.Dufour-Lapointe. Audrey Robichaud scoring 20 plus. Top five merited
:11:14. > :11:21.after that performance. Here we go. Fourth place. She will have to sweat
:11:22. > :11:29.it out for a while, and hope that some of the others fall over. Now,
:11:30. > :11:36.the oldest of the three Canadian sisters, this is Maxime
:11:37. > :11:45.Dufour-Lapointe, 24 years old. She is ready to go. Maxime
:11:46. > :11:50.Dufour-Lapointe on her way. She qualify directly for her final, like
:11:51. > :11:59.her sisters, a 360 of the first kicker. This is fast. This is good
:12:00. > :12:04.work from Maxime Dufour-Lapointe. Not as pretty as Audrey Robichaud in
:12:05. > :12:08.terms of style, but it is effective. She is fighting her way through the
:12:09. > :12:14.middle part of the course. Heading towards the second of the kickers.
:12:15. > :12:18.It is high and far. The landing was OK, the speed is all right. I am not
:12:19. > :12:23.sure it will be good enough to take the lead, but at the moment, the
:12:24. > :12:27.target for Maxime Dufour-Lapointe and her sisters is a place in the
:12:28. > :12:36.top 12 and a position in the second phase of this final. Leading with
:12:37. > :12:43.her left arm. She went clockwise. Most of them, right-handed, lead
:12:44. > :12:49.with their right side and go anticlockwise on the 360. Here is
:12:50. > :12:54.the second one, went quite a long way up and a long way forward, but
:12:55. > :13:00.she spotted and controlled the landing pretty softly. It is going
:13:01. > :13:03.to be a score of 20 plus, I am not sure it is going to trouble the top
:13:04. > :13:17.three at this stage. The oldest of the sisters, she is in fifth place.
:13:18. > :13:24.A nervous wait for her now. I echo boom aura is next to go for Japan,
:13:25. > :13:37.and exciting skier to watch. The Japanese skier one in their canola
:13:38. > :13:50.in 1998. Aiko Uemura, in her fifth Winter Olympics. Yet to win a medal.
:13:51. > :13:55.This is great skiing. She is taking them on and showing who is boss.
:13:56. > :14:00.This is fabulous from Aiko Uemura. Absolutely flying through the money
:14:01. > :14:04.terms. Setting up for the second kicker. The landing is good, the
:14:05. > :14:13.finish is fast, it is all very good indeed for Aiko Uemura. Fabulous.
:14:14. > :14:20.She has been seventh, sixth, fifth and fourth in her previous Olympics.
:14:21. > :14:26.That was the best we have seen tonight. Just missed the start with
:14:27. > :14:31.her left poll, but she does not stop the time until a couple of feet at
:14:32. > :14:39.about. She should not be penalised for that. It should not count. It
:14:40. > :14:46.was not a turn or a jump. To reflect, especially after the first
:14:47. > :14:56.kicker. Surely it will be a top five. It depends if they decided to
:14:57. > :15:07.penalised her for the start. It is in fourth place. That is harsh. The
:15:08. > :15:13.top three hold onto their places. Aiko Uemura in fourth. We move on,
:15:14. > :15:22.back to the top, for Julia Galer Shiva for Kazakhstan. She qualify
:15:23. > :15:34.directly for the final. Here we go. 11th four years ago in Vancouver.
:15:35. > :15:45.She has landed solidly, the skis are tied together. This is good work. --
:15:46. > :15:49.tight together. Not as fast as we have seen, skiing a little
:15:50. > :15:52.cautiously here, I was surprised by the fact she qualified directly for
:15:53. > :15:57.the final after Thursday's performance. Going for the front
:15:58. > :16:01.flip and transit, the only skier in the competition tonight to go for
:16:02. > :16:06.the front flip. The speed is not bad, actually. Just over 30 seconds
:16:07. > :16:11.so she is not far away from the pace time of 30.12. Let's see what the
:16:12. > :16:17.judges make of this, both of the aerials were good. That is the first
:16:18. > :16:26.backflip with an iron Cross. The turns were pretty solid. This got to
:16:27. > :16:32.be is 21.82. -- the score to beat is. A tough manoeuvre to pull off at
:16:33. > :16:40.full speed down a moguls course, the front flip, and any sort of course
:16:41. > :16:47.actually. Kazakhstan coaches and the connections enjoyed that.
:16:48. > :16:56.How close will then three macro go, close enough for second at the
:16:57. > :16:59.moment, 21.26 which means she will definitely appear in the next stage
:17:00. > :17:12.of the final when the top 12 go again.
:17:13. > :17:17.This is Perrine Laffont, just 15 years of age. The French teenager,
:17:18. > :17:26.on her way. She slightly over rotated there but
:17:27. > :17:30.it did not seem to matter because she was able to point their skis
:17:31. > :17:36.straight towards the first mogul in the middle section of the course.
:17:37. > :17:40.Nice work here. Nice and loose with the lower body. The upper body is
:17:41. > :17:46.nice and straight, shoulders and head pointing right down the
:17:47. > :17:52.mountain, backflip in the second jump a bit scruffy, she is home and
:17:53. > :17:58.dry. The 15-year-old Perrine Laffont from France is skiing well, I don't
:17:59. > :18:08.think it will tackle the top 12 scores which are led at the moment I
:18:09. > :18:14.Sudova and then next is Yulia Galysheva and third is Regina
:18:15. > :18:21.Rakhimova. Another performance worthy of a score of plus 20, which
:18:22. > :18:26.way will it go? Slightly over rotated on the first landing and
:18:27. > :18:33.this was a scruffy-looking second jump for Perrine Laffont. 15 years
:18:34. > :18:38.old, my word, what a skier she is and what a prospect for the once
:18:39. > :18:42.mighty French freestyle team. She is there any representative here this
:18:43. > :18:50.evening. And it is time for Perrine Laffont. With just four to go, four
:18:51. > :18:56.good ones as well, she is unlikely to be in the next phase of the final
:18:57. > :18:59.with only the top 12 progressing. And now it is the turn of Eliza
:19:00. > :19:01.Outtrim. She is ready to progress. She is
:19:02. > :19:13.from Colorado. Fast and furious at the top, the
:19:14. > :19:19.first nine turns dealt with in a matter of seconds. Solid white on
:19:20. > :19:25.the first jump, landed it beautifully. Wonderful skiing here.
:19:26. > :19:29.She is going about her work in a really relaxed frame of mind here.
:19:30. > :19:33.Eliza Outtrim from the United States of America, they have got the
:19:34. > :19:37.defending Olympic champion, Hannah Kearney, to come. She has to land
:19:38. > :19:41.the second jump, backflip, iron cross, beautiful execution,
:19:42. > :19:44.wonderful run from Eliza Outtrim. That will push for a top three
:19:45. > :19:58.position. She barely had a breath and made it
:19:59. > :20:04.look very straightforward. Floated the 360 around. Beta for landing,
:20:05. > :20:10.set up the pole plant -- beautiful landing. Going through the rot
:20:11. > :20:14.between them, in the moguls, absorbing all the impacts
:20:15. > :20:19.beautifully all the way down. Head and shoulders down the line, that
:20:20. > :20:24.must be a top three for Eliza Outtrim. A nervous wait for her...
:20:25. > :20:29.She has got second at the moment and goes through to the second phase of
:20:30. > :20:38.the final, her medal hopes are still alive. Three to go, the remaining
:20:39. > :20:44.Dufour-Lapointes and then Hannah Kearney. Justine Dufour-Lapointe
:20:45. > :20:47.getting ready to go at the top. The youngest of the three at 19 years
:20:48. > :21:01.old. She is ready to go. Her sister
:21:02. > :21:10.Maxine is guaranteed a place in the next phase. Justin hit the first
:21:11. > :21:14.kicker, lands the 360 and then skips through the turns and now she is
:21:15. > :21:20.skiing correctly, down the centre line, nice and relaxed, explosive
:21:21. > :21:23.technique from Justine Dufour-Lapointe. Her sister Chloe
:21:24. > :21:28.will be next and then the defending champion, Hannah Kearney. Justin is
:21:29. > :21:32.a bit scruffy coming towards the final kicker but straight in her
:21:33. > :21:36.body beautifully during the second jump and the backflip landed, skis
:21:37. > :21:42.away in good shape and I would suggest that is enough to take the
:21:43. > :21:47.second of the three sisters through to the second round of the final.
:21:48. > :21:56.Nervous moments for all the Canadian team. Sudova leads but Eliza Outtrim
:21:57. > :22:04.is second, and the Kazakhstan skier is third, Yulia Galysheva. Not the
:22:05. > :22:14.best run we have ever seen their but it will surely be enough to see her
:22:15. > :22:17.through to the next phase. Beautiful second jump and straight and true
:22:18. > :22:24.all the way through, perfect rotation round. Just one of the
:22:25. > :22:30.sisters to come as Justine goes third for the moment, Sudova leads,
:22:31. > :22:34.with Eliza Outtrim second, and two to go in round one of the final and
:22:35. > :22:40.the last of the sisters, can they make it three out of 12 in the next
:22:41. > :22:45.round? Chloe, the middle sister, is ready to go.
:22:46. > :23:02.22 years of age, and aggressive start.
:23:03. > :23:08.She goes through the rhythm of the middle section without any mistake
:23:09. > :23:14.so far, knees and skis locked together, it is beautiful skiing
:23:15. > :23:20.from Chloe Dufour-Lapointe. Round she goes with the final jump, home
:23:21. > :23:24.and dry and that is fast, we will see all three of the Canadian
:23:25. > :23:34.sisters in the next stage and they will be joined by their team-mate,
:23:35. > :23:43.as well. The skier in 12 at the moment is the 15-year-old, Perrine
:23:44. > :23:49.Laffont, if Hannah Kearney does what she can do, she will push them two
:23:50. > :23:55.at two of the final. -- she will push Perrine Laffont out of the
:23:56. > :24:01.final. Wet for the score for Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, it has to be good
:24:02. > :24:09.enough for a top five again. Her sister Justine has scored 21.54. Can
:24:10. > :24:16.Chloe improve? The second jump backflip with an iron cross and a
:24:17. > :24:22.sweet landing as well. Third for Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, the sisters
:24:23. > :24:27.holding third, fourth and 10th, they will all be in round two. One more
:24:28. > :24:32.to come, the Olympic champion from 2010, no skier has ever successfully
:24:33. > :24:37.defended their Olympic moguls title, male or female. Hannah Kearney
:24:38. > :24:40.aiding to become the first to achieve back-to-back Olympic
:24:41. > :24:49.titles, she won in Vancouver in 2010.
:24:50. > :24:56.Let's see if it goes according to plan, so far so good for Hannah
:24:57. > :24:59.Kearney. Not too clever on the landing on the first jump and she
:25:00. > :25:03.was a passenger for a couple of seconds there but now she is back in
:25:04. > :25:07.control, not the best we have ever seen from Kearney, she will be
:25:08. > :25:16.marked down for an errant landing but the little turns are solid.
:25:17. > :25:27.A threesome and 60 with iron cross on the second jump -- a 360. I don't
:25:28. > :25:30.think that will be enough to overtake Sudova unless they go on
:25:31. > :25:34.the protection. The coach looks a bit nonplussed. She will surely make
:25:35. > :25:40.the best 12 and progress through to the next round but the landing here
:25:41. > :25:46.was a little shaky. Just got left behind for three terms, four or five
:25:47. > :25:52.or six even before she was back over her skis and doing the right thing.
:25:53. > :25:58.The second jump, she went for the grab, the hands going down to the
:25:59. > :26:06.ski. A touch rather than a grab of the right ski for Hannah Kearney.
:26:07. > :26:14.360 iron cross grab, , and incomplete grab. She has probably
:26:15. > :26:18.done enough. The middle section is the part where she needs to work,
:26:19. > :26:22.that was the discussion with the coach but she is in the next phase,
:26:23. > :26:33.she skis into seventh position with a score of 20.95. So we know who the
:26:34. > :26:41.top 12 R. And they include all three of the Dufour-Lapointe sisters based
:26:42. > :26:56.in Montreal in Canada. A good start to the final, Sudova leads the way,
:26:57. > :27:00.qualifying along with Liz Outram. -- Eliza Outtrim. These scores are
:27:01. > :27:04.scrubbed and they start afresh in the second phase. These ten plus two
:27:05. > :27:17.more, Maxine Dufour-Lapointe and Deborah Scanzio are through, several
:27:18. > :27:23.will play no further part. It is all set up for an exciting second phase.
:27:24. > :27:29.Many thanks to Matt Chilton and would be back shortly for the second
:27:30. > :27:32.part of the moguls final but if you want to watch live figure skating,
:27:33. > :27:36.press the red button, it is the pairs free routine with Sue Barker
:27:37. > :27:39.and Robin Cousins giving new commentary on that and that they
:27:40. > :27:44.get, highlights from the first day in Today at the Games here at seven
:27:45. > :27:48.o'clock and in that programme we will see the women's moguls gold
:27:49. > :27:53.medal decided but let's head out there and talk to two men who know
:27:54. > :27:58.exactly what it is like to perform and in Graham Bell's case, to ski
:27:59. > :28:02.fast and under pressure and in deadly's case to perform tricks and
:28:03. > :28:06.all sorts on his snowboard -- in Edgeley's case. This combines both
:28:07. > :28:16.of those, in the moguls, doesn't it? Yes, the transition ground where you
:28:17. > :28:22.have much more in the freestyle and Alpine racing because you have got
:28:23. > :28:28.elements of speed and carving. My brother is a coach and he uses mogul
:28:29. > :28:33.skiing to test Alpine skiers, he sets them all off and the quickest
:28:34. > :28:39.ones down the mogul field, kids aged between 8-12 but they go into the
:28:40. > :28:44.top group. You get a real sense from the side camera in particular how
:28:45. > :28:48.fast they are going down and I watch it, to be able to ski like that
:28:49. > :28:57.would be an amazing thing. Talk to me about the my macro sisters. You
:28:58. > :28:59.competed for a long time on the competition -- about the
:29:00. > :29:08.Dufour-Lapointe sisters. How helpful as it to be a family together on the
:29:09. > :29:13.tour? It is definitely useful to have a sibling with you but it is
:29:14. > :29:18.not like the Alpine triathlon in the Lee McCulloch the Brownlee brothers.
:29:19. > :29:22.With mogul skiing, the same with Alpine skiing, it is a confidence
:29:23. > :29:26.thing. If you're sibling does well and you are still stood at the top,
:29:27. > :29:31.you are thinking, "if they can do it, I can as well" and it is a
:29:32. > :29:43.confidence thing. And if you get that spiral of confidence, it lifts
:29:44. > :29:48.you up. Ed, we are seeing good mogul skiing from Kazakhstan, USA, Canada.
:29:49. > :29:57.What hope is there fraud were to skiers -- what hope is there for
:29:58. > :30:04.reddish skiers? -- British skiers. You have to go where the snow is,
:30:05. > :30:08.you cannot learn in doors. Exactly. Jamie was already a visible talent
:30:09. > :30:13.by the age of 11. We don't have domestic facilities where people can
:30:14. > :30:16.forge early mogul skills and then move away so they have to move away
:30:17. > :30:23.early. Ironically, there is one skier, Ben Cavett, Sussex born who
:30:24. > :30:29.is now 20 and in 2011, he was second in the junior world champions and he
:30:30. > :30:33.is here in Sochi but he will ski for France, because he took on French
:30:34. > :30:37.nationality in 2012 and UK sport refused to fund him so we have got a
:30:38. > :30:45.mogul talent but he is not going to ski for the UK will stop --. Having
:30:46. > :30:50.watched them all go through and you know that the scores are wiped out
:30:51. > :30:56.in the second round they start again, what do you see that
:30:57. > :31:01.impressed you? What's did not impress me was Hannah Kearney's run,
:31:02. > :31:05.she looked really nervous, she has been much better than that but this
:31:06. > :31:13.is like a clean slate in the second round, the 12 that come through and
:31:14. > :31:18.go on to the next round, Kearney made a lot of mistakes. Just after
:31:19. > :31:22.the landing of the first kicker, she was out of control for about four
:31:23. > :31:27.bumps and then in the back-seat so sitting on the turns. They account
:31:28. > :31:36.for 50% of this and they say in mogul skiing, you jump for show but
:31:37. > :31:42.you turn for though, I borrowed it from golf and it is about carving it
:31:43. > :31:43.down the runs and having good ski comptroller and having good carving
:31:44. > :31:56.skills. What is the snow like? Is it a
:31:57. > :32:07.mixture of real and artificial? It is all artificial, but they break
:32:08. > :32:14.up the landing after the kickers, so you need something to absorb the
:32:15. > :32:21.landing. We called them to death cookies, it is actually solid ice.
:32:22. > :32:22.That puts even more pressure on the knees are. Here we go with his
:32:23. > :32:37.second run. It has not gone completely according
:32:38. > :32:39.to plan. She made a mess of the landing on the first kicker. She
:32:40. > :32:55.seems to have got control. She is across the line with a fast
:32:56. > :33:00.time. It was probably that fast because, shortly after the first
:33:01. > :33:03.kicker, she spent a good deal of time out of control, trying to catch
:33:04. > :33:09.up her skis on the bottom part of the course. She said, I do not think
:33:10. > :33:16.it is as good as the first run. The first kicker, straight back
:33:17. > :33:20.somersault. Got tipped over the tales of her ski slightly, she was
:33:21. > :33:32.fighting for control for a few seconds.
:33:33. > :33:42.Second kicker pretty solid. Off axis backflip, and back into the groove.
:33:43. > :33:48.The top 12 going now. Only the six will go further. The six best will
:33:49. > :33:54.battle for medals. I am not sure if the Italian will be one of them. She
:33:55. > :33:59.might just hold on, but it is the first of the sisters now, the
:34:00. > :34:05.oldest, Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, the first to tackle round two of the
:34:06. > :34:08.final. On her way, Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, the oldest and
:34:09. > :34:14.tallest of the three. This is a good start. Straight back into the
:34:15. > :34:18.rhythm, nice work. The best skiing we have seen so far from her, she is
:34:19. > :34:24.getting better and better with every run. She is ripping it up through
:34:25. > :34:31.the middle part of the course. She has not put a foot wrong so far, she
:34:32. > :34:37.has to nail the final kicker. She is a passenger, she has got it back
:34:38. > :34:42.under control. It is a good time. Just one mistake. One obvious
:34:43. > :34:49.mistake. The judges will have spotted it. Immediately prior to the
:34:50. > :34:56.second kicker. Top six required, she is going to be in the top half will
:34:57. > :35:00.stop --. Leading with her left hand, and spinning clockwise. These were
:35:01. > :35:10.good turns from Maxime Dufour-Lapointe. Lost control just
:35:11. > :35:17.to before the second kicker, but bravely took it on. When for the
:35:18. > :35:23.backflip. Good presence of mind to be able to pull the trick. Not
:35:24. > :35:26.entering the jump in full control. But it was an obvious mistake, and
:35:27. > :35:33.it will be scored down by the judges. They have been quite brutal.
:35:34. > :35:38.That could be the end of the road for the oldest of the three sisters.
:35:39. > :35:41.She is in trouble of that second kicker. Another Canadian, Audrey
:35:42. > :35:52.Robichaud. She gets the call, she is on her
:35:53. > :35:58.way, she skied beautifully on her first run. Second round of the
:35:59. > :36:10.final. First kicker, 360, lands smartly. If you flex of powder into
:36:11. > :36:16.her face. The knees go up to her chest, locked together, beautiful
:36:17. > :36:21.skiing. A wonderful rhythm. This is great to watch. If she holds this
:36:22. > :36:26.second job, this will surely be enough for the lead. The landing is
:36:27. > :36:31.good, it is not the quickest, it was not in the first round either. She
:36:32. > :36:34.apologises to the cameramen for a shower of snow, that is what will
:36:35. > :36:45.happen if they position themselves their! The school to beat is the
:36:46. > :36:48.Italian, 20.07. I think Audrey Robichaud has done enough to go
:36:49. > :36:55.close, she will be second at least. She will be ahead her compatriot
:36:56. > :37:02.Maxime Dufour-Lapointe. Good turns in the middle. Nice and relaxed,
:37:03. > :37:10.flowing from turn to turn. Great skills. Look at the height on the
:37:11. > :37:15.second jump with the iron Cross back scratcher silhouetted against the
:37:16. > :37:25.night sky. Lots to enjoy from Audrey Robichaud from Canada. That should
:37:26. > :37:33.be enough for the lead. It is. She raises the bar. 12 involved in the
:37:34. > :37:43.second round, only six will go for medals. Three of them will be
:37:44. > :37:48.disappointed. Aiko Uemura now, she has been seventh, sixth, fifth and
:37:49. > :37:58.fourth in her previous Winter Olympics. 34 years of age. Well done
:37:59. > :38:06.so far. Some of these turns a bit wide, now she is starting to attack
:38:07. > :38:15.and let them run. She is in full control all the way down. Her knees
:38:16. > :38:21.absorbing, her arms moving quickly. Slightly toppled over details of her
:38:22. > :38:27.skis on landing, but that was fast. Just nine hundredths of a second
:38:28. > :38:38.outside of pace time. With one Olympic title to celebrate, Japan,
:38:39. > :38:42.in 1998, Aiko Uemura keeps herself in the hunt for the medals here. It
:38:43. > :38:51.was not without mistakes. A bit of giant slalom here. Not quite giant
:38:52. > :38:57.slalom, but wide turns. The school to beat, 20.35, Audrey Robichaud.
:38:58. > :39:04.The second job was high and controlled. A perfect landing. That
:39:05. > :39:14.should be good enough for first or second. It is first, new leader.
:39:15. > :39:21.Aiko Uemura hoping to finish in the top six.
:39:22. > :39:33.The Australian bid next ago. Three Australians started the final, Cox
:39:34. > :39:39.the only one to survive to round two. Here she goes. Looking for a
:39:40. > :39:49.place in the top six and the chance to ski for an Olympic hurdle. Nice
:39:50. > :39:54.work. Real flair and creativity. Back and head and shoulders solid
:39:55. > :39:59.and stable, hand moving from Baumber to bump. Good skiing, growing in
:40:00. > :40:06.confidence, and that was a beautiful backflip. The speed is good as well.
:40:07. > :40:13.The Australian supporters are happy with what they have seen so far. She
:40:14. > :40:25.lives in Victoria. Up in the mountains. She did not have a great
:40:26. > :40:33.season in terms of snow in 2013. But enough for the moguls skier is to
:40:34. > :40:45.get plenty of training. Now, she is chasing the current leading school,
:40:46. > :40:53.which belongs to the Japanese, 21.15. She might have done enough to
:40:54. > :41:00.come close to taking the lead. 21.15, the school to beat. It might
:41:01. > :41:15.give her a chance of a medal. She is leading. Well done. So, five have
:41:16. > :41:22.been, there are seven to go. Only six will booth into the final phase
:41:23. > :41:27.of the contest, and the chance to go for medals. Hannah Kearney is the
:41:28. > :41:30.next ago, the defending champion. Very poor first final run from
:41:31. > :41:36.Hannah Kearney. Room for improvement. We expect to see some
:41:37. > :41:45.here. A nice start, beautiful backflip. A little trouble post
:41:46. > :41:51.landing of the first kicker. She is fighting for control, she is back
:41:52. > :42:04.over them now, she has two make the second kicker count. The turns to
:42:05. > :42:10.beat, 21.59. 360, with a grab. Better, but not her best.
:42:11. > :42:14.Absolutely, better than her run of ten minutes ago. She has not had
:42:15. > :42:19.long to recover between the two descents of the course, but it is a
:42:20. > :42:26.step in the right direction for Hannah Kearney. This was the first
:42:27. > :42:33.jump. Straightening her arms above her head, then out to the side, then
:42:34. > :42:41.by her side, the skis were crossed for a couple of seconds post first
:42:42. > :43:01.kicker. Hannah Kearney needs a place in the top six. Did she get the
:43:02. > :43:04.grab? Just about. 360 cross grab. The best we have seen on the second
:43:05. > :43:12.kicker for Hannah Kearney. It was not perfect. It is good enough for
:43:13. > :43:24.first. She is back in it. Hannah Kearney in first position. Six to
:43:25. > :43:39.go. Nobody get guaranteed a place in the final phase. The Russian on her
:43:40. > :43:43.way. Quite a stiff looking start, did not look particularly relaxed.
:43:44. > :43:52.She has to start to make them work here. It is improving all the time.
:43:53. > :44:02.The noise level is rising at the foot of the hill. Backflip produced.
:44:03. > :44:18.A slight wobble on landing, but it is OK. Top three, I would suggest.
:44:19. > :44:27.A shaky start. She did not relax immediately. She landed OK. These
:44:28. > :44:45.turns were tight at times. The second jump was well executed.
:44:46. > :44:52.Straight body. Certainly a score in the 20s. Top three, possibly. She is
:44:53. > :44:58.forth at the moment. She just loses her smile, there is a nervous wait
:44:59. > :45:09.to see if she returns as part of the final six.
:45:10. > :45:21.Next, Yulia Galysheva from Kazakhstan. The world number six on
:45:22. > :45:30.her way. Nine turns and then the first kicker. She threw that around
:45:31. > :45:34.fast. This is where her best work is generally done, the middle part of
:45:35. > :45:40.the course. Her knees are pumping like pistons. She is really letting
:45:41. > :45:48.it all hang out tonight. Will this be her last run or will she have one
:45:49. > :45:54.more clack at a medal? She lands sweetly, beautifully done on the
:45:55. > :45:58.second kicker. The front flip her trademark, the only one of the
:45:59. > :46:09.finalists to try that move. The Kazakhstan supporters enjoying what
:46:10. > :46:18.they are seeing. A backflip, a Cross of iron on the first, and a couple
:46:19. > :46:22.of seconds of incomplete control. But she was back to business by the
:46:23. > :46:32.time she hit the second kicker. She floated the front flip around. She
:46:33. > :46:38.deserves a score of 21 plus. Will it be enough to go ahead of Hannah
:46:39. > :46:44.Kearney? No. It is getting tight up there. There are still some talented
:46:45. > :46:50.skiers to come, we have got four more to come. She could be bumped
:46:51. > :46:58.out of the top six by the time the second round of the final is
:46:59. > :47:07.complete. The second of the sisters, it is just deemed to fall point's
:47:08. > :47:17.turn. Her sister already out of the third phase of the final. Justine is
:47:18. > :47:26.on her way. A 360, white back into the rhythm, wasted no time in
:47:27. > :47:34.settling down. A little flick of the wrist to make the pole plant. Good
:47:35. > :47:43.control. Just Dufour-Lapointe, her sister Chloe is still to come. The
:47:44. > :47:49.beautiful second jump, not too many terms at the second kicker, but she
:47:50. > :47:58.enjoyed it. The cut-off score is 20.35. Audrey Robichaud is in sixth
:47:59. > :48:04.place, with 20.35. That is the cut-off point at this stage. The
:48:05. > :48:14.first kicker, a nice 360 from Justine Dufour-Lapointe. Maximum ski
:48:15. > :48:24.is no contact, carving her way down. Steady and still, with her upper
:48:25. > :48:29.body, shoulders and head. Mogul skiers have a light hold on their
:48:30. > :48:35.ski poles. They do not equip them to firmly. That was a great second
:48:36. > :48:41.jump, practised in the gymnasium, on the Champa Lanes -- on the
:48:42. > :48:51.trampolines. Second place, she goes through to the next phase. Her
:48:52. > :49:00.sister Chloe is the next ago. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, one of the last
:49:01. > :49:15.three to go in the second phase of the final, when 12 will become sex.
:49:16. > :49:26.-- six. 360, just like her sisters. Explosive skiing again. Nothing left
:49:27. > :49:30.behind here. She is laying it all down. Beautiful skiing, good speed
:49:31. > :49:36.as well, it has got to be a backflip. She lands solidly, one of
:49:37. > :49:47.the best of the night so far. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe. The middle sister,
:49:48. > :49:52.22 years of age. We are definitely not having all three of them in the
:49:53. > :49:56.third round of the final, the oldest sister has missed out, but just been
:49:57. > :50:01.is already there. She looks set to be joined by Chloe Dufour-Lapointe,
:50:02. > :50:06.she has had a really good second round run. Wonderful in the middle
:50:07. > :50:12.part of the course. Just a little twitch with the right ski. The
:50:13. > :50:25.ecologic is well have spotted it. But it is good enough for a top
:50:26. > :50:30.three position. A big smile. She is second at the moment, she will
:50:31. > :50:41.continue on to the medal round. Hannah Kearney lead.
:50:42. > :50:53.Eliza Outtrim is the next ago. The cut-off point now, a score of 21.12.
:50:54. > :51:07.Yulia Galysheva is currently in sixth place.
:51:08. > :51:16.She is tearing through, leaving nothing behind. From Colorado, a
:51:17. > :51:26.hotbed of freestyle skiing, freestyle snowboarding. Very similar
:51:27. > :51:33.to the one we just saw from Chloe Dufour-Lapointe. Deserving of a
:51:34. > :51:40.similar score. Will that put her in the final?
:51:41. > :51:49.I think it will. Pretty good from top to bottom. The top six at the
:51:50. > :51:56.moment are Hannah Kearney, the two Dufour-Lapointes, Cox, Yulia
:51:57. > :52:02.Galysheva and Aiko Uemura, I think we might lose Yulia Galysheva.
:52:03. > :52:17.Good jumps, wonderful turns. And they are really tightly bunched at
:52:18. > :52:23.the top now, 21.93, the top score, down to Yulia Galysheva's 21.12.
:52:24. > :52:30.21.50 fifth for Eliza Outtrim. She has got fifth. And with just one to
:52:31. > :52:36.come, she is in the final phase. So the last skier to go is Nikola
:52:37. > :52:41.Sudova, incredibly impressive in the first round of the final. So
:52:42. > :52:50.relaxed. A joy to see her cruise through the bumps, Sudova is ready
:52:51. > :52:52.to go again. 31 years old from the Czech Republic, she is away and
:52:53. > :53:02.skiing beautifully. Her trademark jump on the first
:53:03. > :53:06.jump, the crowd and the judges like it and these terms are beautifully
:53:07. > :53:13.executed so far. One little mistake, barely noticeable.
:53:14. > :53:21.Sudova on a mission here, great skiing, the second kicker, going in
:53:22. > :53:29.burden, backflip, not totally smooth but a great run. Sudova from the
:53:30. > :53:35.Czech Republic in sixth at the moment, the Japanese skier Aiko
:53:36. > :53:43.Uemura will be worried. Her score of 21.15 is the target now for Nikola
:53:44. > :53:50.Sudova. That is that beautiful 360 when she seemingly stops halfway.
:53:51. > :53:56.She pulls the spread Eagle, there was a mistake, just one, hardly
:53:57. > :54:05.noticeable. The skis and knees were locked together, apart from that.
:54:06. > :54:09.The second jump was a little scruffy and the standard of the second
:54:10. > :54:19.kicker has been solid here. A bit ropey, this. The backflip and no
:54:20. > :54:25.real terms afterwards but she skied well. Oh, my goodness, she is out,
:54:26. > :54:31.Sudova goes no further. She has been treated very harshly there. Sudova
:54:32. > :54:34.is eliminated, in the second phase. It is pretty cut-throat. She has
:54:35. > :54:40.skied beautifully but when it matters most, she does not get a
:54:41. > :54:44.chance to ski for the medals. So we know that the six going through will
:54:45. > :54:47.be Hannah Kearney, the defending champion, Chloe Dufour-Lapointe,
:54:48. > :54:54.Justin Dufour-Lapointe, Britteny Cox, Eliza Gudrun and Aiko Uemura
:54:55. > :55:03.who will be breathing a massive sigh of relief, -- Eliza Outtrim. The
:55:04. > :55:09.scores are now scrubbed, they go again starting from scratch. The six
:55:10. > :55:15.going for three available medals. One round to come in the Olympic
:55:16. > :55:16.women's mogul is final and these are the six who will play no further
:55:17. > :55:32.part. between four coaches, we will show
:55:33. > :55:35.you that live and I have moved around the park now, this is called
:55:36. > :55:38.the Bolshoy and will be the venue for the eye socket as the Games
:55:39. > :55:41.continue, one of the biggest sport in Russia and they are hoping that
:55:42. > :55:44.they will win the gold medal although Canada will be trying to
:55:45. > :55:49.prevent them and USA will have a chance. The highlights programme
:55:50. > :55:52.every night on BBC Two will give you a chance to see the best of the live
:55:53. > :55:55.action where that is continuing and catch up on everything that has
:55:56. > :56:00.happened so far, that is what is coming your way in just about one
:56:01. > :56:05.minute here on BBC Two, I will also be talking live to the two new stars
:56:06. > :56:07.of the Winter Olympics as far as Great Britain are concerned, Jamie
:56:08. > :56:11.Nicholls and Billy Morgan because they have set the social media world
:56:12. > :56:15.alight with their performances this morning. Jamie Nicholls has been
:56:16. > :56:18.getting marriage proposals, they are coming to the park to join me and we
:56:19. > :56:21.will find a nice comfortable and slightly warmer place to store to 's
:56:22. > :56:29.talk to them. For now, goodbye. The Six Nations
:56:30. > :56:31.continues on Saturday with Ireland's massive
:56:32. > :56:34.clash with holders Wales, followed by Scotland against
:56:35. > :56:37.England in the Calcutta Cup. On Sunday, France
:56:38. > :56:40.play host to Italy. The Six Nations - our fiercest
:56:41. > :56:45.rivals are those who are closest.
