:01:13. > :01:53.Good morning. I know you're rushing around this morning, but do you
:01:54. > :01:58.realize what day this is? Yes, it's day 14 of the Winter Olympics. But
:01:59. > :02:08.it's also the 21st of February. Why does that matter? On the 21st of
:02:09. > :02:16.February 1980 Robin Cousins one figure skating gold. On the train to
:02:17. > :02:23.1st of February 2002, Rhona Martin won gold. We will see the men's
:02:24. > :02:31.curling final at 1:30pm this afternoon. If they win, we want a
:02:32. > :02:46.national holiday on the 21st of February. I can see some bronze
:02:47. > :02:49.medal winning curlers beside me. We've got a curling appetiser for
:02:50. > :02:51.you in the men's bronze-medal play-off. Sweden's Niklas Edin
:02:52. > :02:57.against China's Liu Rui, and that's on the ice very shortly. The French
:02:58. > :02:59.scooped all of the medals in the men's ski cross final yesterday.
:03:00. > :03:02.Today, could their compatriot Ophelie David become, at 37, the
:03:03. > :03:05.oldest woman to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games?
:03:06. > :03:10.Weirdness and wonderment coming live from Rosa Khutor later. And these
:03:11. > :03:13.are heady times for British winter sport, with silver or gold to come
:03:14. > :03:16.in curling, and could short-tracker Elise Christie smash our record
:03:17. > :03:30.haul? She looked awfully good in the heats. Now it's crunch time in the
:03:31. > :03:34.1000m. I am not sure what a collective noun for a group of medal
:03:35. > :03:51.winning curlers is, I am going to call it a born and. -- bond. Good
:03:52. > :04:03.morning. What a couple of hours you have had. How much relief? How much
:04:04. > :04:11.enjoyment are you taking? Lots. It has been a great couple of hours. We
:04:12. > :04:15.did not get in until 1:30am. These are the moments you want to cherish.
:04:16. > :04:22.It does not happen often and we are so happy. I do not think it has done
:04:23. > :04:28.in yet. You were the first to shed the tears on the ice, can you
:04:29. > :04:34.describe that moment? It was just pure relief. We had such a
:04:35. > :04:43.devastating loss the day before and to go back and leave a tall and come
:04:44. > :04:46.out and win the bronze medal showed the team spirit and the trust and
:04:47. > :04:51.support we have with each other and I think we have worked so hard over
:04:52. > :04:58.the past four years, and to get that medal was such a relief, so happy to
:04:59. > :05:04.have brought home the bronze. The night before you had had that
:05:05. > :05:07.devastating loss against Canada. When you think back, how did you
:05:08. > :05:15.manage to turn things round? What was it like? It was a complete
:05:16. > :05:21.whirlwind of emotions. The 24-hour period coming off the semifinal
:05:22. > :05:24.having lost, but we regrouped, had a chat with our coaches and made sure
:05:25. > :05:30.we bounced back. We had to make sure we had a good one. There was an
:05:31. > :05:34.awful lot of support before you went onto the ice for the bronze medal
:05:35. > :05:42.play-off and you got a lot of support from Kath Grainger as well.
:05:43. > :05:49.What did she say? Catherine has been through a lot. She got three Silvers
:05:50. > :05:54.before she finally got the gold and we took from her that if you keep
:05:55. > :05:57.fighting you will get what you deserve and we took that as true
:05:58. > :06:05.inspiration and now we were not going to home, go home empty-handed
:06:06. > :06:11.to it gave us that little bit of fire. You have a degree of
:06:12. > :06:15.objectivity watching your team-mates. It must have been a very
:06:16. > :06:19.exciting time going out onto the ice, but what part do you think you
:06:20. > :06:25.were able to play in terms of getting them up for this? Important
:06:26. > :06:35.was it for everybody to pull together? I do a lot behind the
:06:36. > :06:41.scenes. I was not playing myself. I have a night-time roll and I am
:06:42. > :06:45.support for the girls. We had to pull together and these girls have
:06:46. > :06:52.all experienced failure and success so they might have that bounceback
:06:53. > :06:58.ability and we came out with the goal to have tears for the right
:06:59. > :07:02.reasons. We are standing in the Olympic Park because you are going
:07:03. > :07:10.to get your bronze medal this evening. You put Eve in a position
:07:11. > :07:19.to have to draw to get this bronze medal. Was there any doubt she was
:07:20. > :07:26.going to pull this off? No. Why? This is what we practice for. We
:07:27. > :07:36.knew that if we did our job is easily and correctly, Eve as always
:07:37. > :07:44.said, give me a draw for the win and I will get it for you -- has always
:07:45. > :07:48.said. It put down what our whole week has been about and I believe we
:07:49. > :07:58.deserved that medal. It comes down to you. Everybody is then, I am glad
:07:59. > :08:01.it is not me. I much do you like it? That is what comes with being skip.
:08:02. > :08:07.You have a lot of responsibility, a lot of pressure, if you make the
:08:08. > :08:18.shot you get a lot of glory, if you miss, you get a lot of grief. It was
:08:19. > :08:31.a team effort. The girls made their shots and left me a relatively easy
:08:32. > :08:43.olive flower. -- shot. What a great team effort. I am Billy happy. --
:08:44. > :08:46.really happy. What a fantastic win. Rhona, you went through this 12
:08:47. > :08:54.years ago today to win the gold medal. We talk about emotions, but
:08:55. > :09:00.it is as much about managing emotions as it is about skill. The
:09:01. > :09:06.girls are used to a tight schedule game after game and the Olympics is
:09:07. > :09:11.spread out, so it is the focus and concentration or a longer period of
:09:12. > :09:16.time, so it is an emotional roller-coaster and it is being able
:09:17. > :09:20.to handle that. The girls have done that really well and that showed
:09:21. > :09:25.going into the bronze medal game, they had to be as focused and
:09:26. > :09:31.determined to win, and they were. I do not buy some of this. There must
:09:32. > :09:43.be times when you want to chuck teacups at one another. Who is the
:09:44. > :09:49.tyrant and how do you then your frustrations? We spend so much time
:09:50. > :09:53.together, we spent weeks in Canada together, so we know when somebody
:09:54. > :10:01.has got out of bed on the wrong side. We are good at managing that.
:10:02. > :10:07.Do teacups fly? Not very often. We are good at taking ourselves away
:10:08. > :10:13.before anything like that happens. I have to turn my attention to the
:10:14. > :10:17.gentleman this afternoon, Dave Murdoch, going for gold. Can you
:10:18. > :10:22.describe the kind of things he will be going through with his team? It
:10:23. > :10:26.is trying to keep everything the same that you have done every day
:10:27. > :10:32.for the last four years, for your whole training. Everything has to
:10:33. > :10:39.focus on this one game. You have 20 stones each to throw and that is
:10:40. > :10:46.nothing compared to how many they throw DN, day out. What are your
:10:47. > :10:51.thoughts? Canada have never lost to Great Britain in an Olympics and
:10:52. > :10:56.Great Britain have not beaten Canada in a World Championships for four
:10:57. > :11:08.years. I saw the guys this morning and Dave Murdoch was staring at his
:11:09. > :11:20.cornflakes, rather than eating them! It is going to be tough. It is
:11:21. > :11:28.not easy. Hopefully they will give it their all, and they do not have a
:11:29. > :11:33.great record, but they will give it everything. You are the youngest
:11:34. > :11:42.ring in the history of curling to win a medal. You must be very proud.
:11:43. > :11:48.Surely this is not the end. How many more Games you want to do? We are
:11:49. > :11:54.going to take a couple of days off and then re-focus, we still have two
:11:55. > :12:02.competitions this year. We are going to go for Korea. We are so young and
:12:03. > :12:08.focused and we have the same goals so we will be going for hopefully
:12:09. > :12:14.another after that. Curling really seems to have taken the country by
:12:15. > :12:22.Dawn. Apparently it is bringing your broom to work day. Previously it was
:12:23. > :12:33.seen as an oddity. This is a full-time sport now. Previously it
:12:34. > :12:37.was jokes about housewives and cleaning the kitchen floor, and now
:12:38. > :12:42.the professionalism that has come into the sport is great. People know
:12:43. > :12:49.it is a full-time spot for these guys and the amount of work they put
:12:50. > :13:12.in. There is a fair bit of readiness. -- really controversial
:13:13. > :13:17.calendars. Back in the day the image of the sport was slightly different
:13:18. > :13:22.and I think it has moved on and had the different image. Looking at the
:13:23. > :13:32.average age, we are the youngest, but eight out of the nine teams,
:13:33. > :13:37.they each is law, and I remember watching and there were skippers
:13:38. > :13:48.giving up at 16 because they were passed at. -- pass it. Thank you for
:13:49. > :13:53.the years of dedication and the anxiety, tension and terror you have
:13:54. > :13:59.inflicted upon the nation, but thank you for your bronze, you deserve
:14:00. > :14:16.your medals denied and you deserve to enjoy the rest of the games. We
:14:17. > :14:25.have the bronze match in the curling. We can say good morning to
:14:26. > :14:47.Steve Cram and Jackie Lockhart. Thank you, Hazel. Mr February,
:14:48. > :14:54.indeed. I have never appeared in any kind of calendar! That was a lovely
:14:55. > :15:01.chat, great to see the girls in good spirits. They know what it is like
:15:02. > :15:04.to come into a bronze medal match. They have been doing the rounds of
:15:05. > :15:09.the various media outlets, everything they deserve. It is great
:15:10. > :15:19.that they have had such a fantastic response. This match here between
:15:20. > :15:30.two teams who do not want to be in the position of having no medal. A
:15:31. > :15:35.bit like Mirjam Ott in the women's map, two Olympics in a row finishing
:15:36. > :15:40.in fourth place. So really intriguing bronze medal match in
:15:41. > :15:48.store here. And as Hazel was saying, the surprise package, the first end
:15:49. > :15:54.blank, and Sweden have a hammer in the second end. China are very much
:15:55. > :16:01.the surprise package, impressed everybody, particularly with their
:16:02. > :16:05.early play. I think they won their first four matches without defeat,
:16:06. > :16:11.obviously, and then they had some tough, almost beat Canada in the
:16:12. > :16:17.round robin. And it was Canada to whom they lost in the semifinal. Liu
:16:18. > :16:24.Rui has been leading his team very well indeed. The Canadian coach who
:16:25. > :16:27.has been so proud of their performance have said that they come
:16:28. > :16:33.into this match with no pressure. The pressure is all on Sweden. That
:16:34. > :16:39.may well be true. There is certainly expectation on Niklas Edin and his
:16:40. > :16:43.World Championship team, they certainly want some kind of medal.
:16:44. > :16:48.It is how they will respond to defeat from Great Britain. If you
:16:49. > :16:54.didn't see it, David Murdoch given the chance to win that match at the
:16:55. > :17:05.very end, and did it brilliantly. We can go back a week. It was talking
:17:06. > :17:09.about dates, Valentine's Day. It seems a long time ago. That was when
:17:10. > :17:16.these two teams met in the round robin. An intriguing match in
:17:17. > :17:22.prospect, Jackie. It is very difficult to predict, of course, but
:17:23. > :17:25.I think China were well beaten by Canada in their semifinal, and do
:17:26. > :17:33.they come into this in a better frame of mind? I'm not sure where my
:17:34. > :17:42.thoughts lie at the moment. The Chinese did give Canada a good game.
:17:43. > :17:45.They do give Canada a good game in the first half, but Canada pulled
:17:46. > :17:49.away in the second half, and we have seen that quite often this week. It
:17:50. > :17:57.has often been a game of two halves, the old cliche. Sometimes when they
:17:58. > :18:00.go off, take a little break, it can be very good for one set of players
:18:01. > :18:08.and not so good for the other. But we have started this game cagily, we
:18:09. > :18:16.have just had a blank end, but something is starting to happen
:18:17. > :18:21.here. A couple of short guards up there, and I'm sure there is a
:18:22. > :18:26.Swedish yellow stone up on the left-hand side as I can see it. I
:18:27. > :18:34.think they might try to split this if they get the opportunity. They
:18:35. > :18:40.have been quite attacking. They certainly were earlier on in the
:18:41. > :18:45.week. They had a couple of opportunities in that semifinal
:18:46. > :18:50.which they didn't take. I think they forced a one in the very first end
:18:51. > :18:54.in the semifinal, but they didn't capitalise on it after that. They
:18:55. > :19:01.sort of change the style with which they had been playing.
:19:02. > :19:12.There is the first little mistake from China. It is early, early days.
:19:13. > :19:18.He has hit and rolled, and taken his back one out there. So here is
:19:19. > :19:38.Niklas Edin, asking for an in-turn. And the Swedish women were beaten by
:19:39. > :19:42.Canada in last night's final. A silver medal for them after they
:19:43. > :19:54.have won the gold in the last two Olympics. The men had hoped to come
:19:55. > :19:58.here to Sochi in the golden double match -- the gold medal match, and I
:19:59. > :20:04.wonder if Niklas Edin is able to pick up his team. They have a real
:20:05. > :20:12.job on their hands here. This new team from China continuing to
:20:13. > :20:15.develop, and I think I am right in saying that the world championships
:20:16. > :20:23.for the men is going to be in Beijing in April. Yes, the men go to
:20:24. > :20:29.Beijing and the ladies go to Canada for their worlds. They are not
:20:30. > :20:37.competing together any more. Two separate competitions. Imagine if
:20:38. > :20:40.these Chinese men go home with the bronze medal. That would raise the
:20:41. > :20:57.profile when April comes. Niklas Edin, I'm not sure if people
:20:58. > :21:03.was listening earlier in the week, it is a pleasure to see this young
:21:04. > :21:06.boy playing. He has gone through several back operations, and at one
:21:07. > :21:11.point thought he wouldn't manage to play the game. But they have been
:21:12. > :21:17.successful, and it is really nice to see him still competing at the
:21:18. > :21:28.highest level. This one is just pulling too much, and it has caught
:21:29. > :21:45.top guard there. He must have thrown that light. The Swedish support
:21:46. > :21:52.staff, Eva Logar -- Lund, now the coach for the team. The men's game
:21:53. > :21:53.is different from the women's in-turn is of the shot you are asked
:21:54. > :22:15.to play. I haven't spoken to Niklas, but when
:22:16. > :22:23.he was young, he was always impressed by what the women could
:22:24. > :22:26.do. He watched these females and was inspired with what they have done,
:22:27. > :22:32.and I think that is maybe where he will just get inspiration from Eva.
:22:33. > :22:40.I think that is where it is coming from. We might have to ask. I think
:22:41. > :22:49.it is intriguing. Eva has got lots of experience, has won at the
:22:50. > :22:56.highest level. She maybe has an insight into the thought processes
:22:57. > :23:00.he wants to go through. There are subtle differences between the men
:23:01. > :23:04.and women's games, and more aggressive shots can be played by
:23:05. > :23:10.the men. I just wonder where her default position would be in a
:23:11. > :23:15.difficult scenario. And in her defence, the game is very
:23:16. > :23:17.difference, the strategy is often the same but the aggressiveness of
:23:18. > :23:28.the game and the strength that the men bring to it. But I did notice
:23:29. > :23:33.yesterday that she will use Per Lindholm, and he has masses of
:23:34. > :23:37.experience. For all of these curlers out there, there is a whole band of
:23:38. > :23:39.people that are behind you that must take a lot of the credit going
:23:40. > :23:49.forward. Talking about aggressive shotmaking,
:23:50. > :23:56.Sebastian Kraupp doing a great job there for his skip.
:23:57. > :24:10.Two exciting skips here, I think. They are getting to know this
:24:11. > :24:17.Chinese team of Liu Rui. He is not frightened to take on the big shots,
:24:18. > :24:29.either. So, three Swedish stones out front.
:24:30. > :24:35.China just applying a little bit of early pressure, but that was a good
:24:36. > :24:43.shot from Kraupp to relieve some of it. They are just trying to come in
:24:44. > :24:48.around those stones. These early draws, just getting a feel from the
:24:49. > :24:55.ice, how much it is turning. Yes, this sheet has got a nice draw in
:24:56. > :25:02.it. That Stone has probably moved about three feet. We saw it
:25:03. > :25:04.yesterday in the girls games. Once it gets close to that centreline, it
:25:05. > :25:21.really does start to pull across. Niklas will see this by the time he
:25:22. > :25:25.gets onto the other end. He was in here quite a long time after that
:25:26. > :25:32.semifinal loss, and it was quite nice to see, having gone through the
:25:33. > :25:37.media with the British team, the British men's coach and has worked
:25:38. > :25:42.with Nicholas Eden in the past, he was one of those consoling the
:25:43. > :25:48.Swedish skip, as he was in here quite a long time. The lights were
:25:49. > :25:52.being turned off, practically. All of these players out here put in
:25:53. > :25:59.such a lot of work and practice. And belief in what they are doing. And
:26:00. > :26:04.sometimes it works for you and sometimes it doesn't, and he was
:26:05. > :26:10.very disappointed yesterday. I have no doubts that he will bounce back.
:26:11. > :26:16.He has youth on his side. And he is a very experienced curler.
:26:17. > :26:29.That just got a tiny little bit of movement across there. Liu Rui will
:26:30. > :26:35.only be able to see half, I think. Luckily for us, we are behind this
:26:36. > :26:36.sheet. We can watch the monitor, but I can also see the sheets down
:26:37. > :26:46.below. So he has to be very careful here
:26:47. > :27:01.that he gets enough of the stone and doesn't jam it onto his back red.
:27:02. > :27:05.So, Liu Rui, skip who is actually 31. It is not a young team this, but
:27:06. > :27:27.gaining experience all the time. And if you think about going back to
:27:28. > :27:34.four years ago, Niklas and his team finished fourth, lost a bronze medal
:27:35. > :27:37.match. The Chinese team only 12-macro of their nine, so it just
:27:38. > :27:47.shows you the progress they have made.
:27:48. > :27:56.We have still got a long way to go in this game, but it could be very
:27:57. > :28:07.interesting to see. Even and her team came in as World Championship
:28:08. > :28:10.-- Eve and her team came in as world champions and finished third. Will
:28:11. > :28:21.that happen to the Swedish men as well?
:28:22. > :28:29.A straightforward shot there, played it delicately enough. Takes the one
:28:30. > :28:37.for Sweden. The first score of this bronze medal match. A good steady
:28:38. > :28:51.start from both teams. China has made a couple of nice shots, and
:28:52. > :28:57.Sebastian Kraupp is particularly helping his skip out for Sweden.
:28:58. > :29:06.Into the third end now. Pretty good crowd in here, a few Chinese flags
:29:07. > :29:10.at the far end. The Swedish flags aren't in abundance but there are a
:29:11. > :29:14.few around. The king and queen of Sweden were here earlier in the week
:29:15. > :29:23.to watch the Swedish team. I'm not sure if they are here today.
:29:24. > :29:37.Elvis was in the house yesterday. I was expecting Abba or someone today,
:29:38. > :29:41.but no sign of them yet. There actually is a very good crowd in
:29:42. > :29:48.today. I have been very impressed by the crowds here. It is a small
:29:49. > :29:50.venue, but it does hold 3000 people. We have had some very good crowds,
:29:51. > :30:03.very well-behaved. Not all of them experts in the game
:30:04. > :30:11.of curling, I would say, but they generally cheer at the right times.
:30:12. > :30:15.I'm glad to say, I think the curling competition is one which has
:30:16. > :30:18.captured the imagination of people on television, and I know even in
:30:19. > :30:24.other countries apart from Great Britain, it has been getting rave
:30:25. > :30:28.reviews. The Olympics always does every four years, it gives curling
:30:29. > :30:31.such a platform. The matches are long enough for people to get into
:30:32. > :30:35.them, get to know the teams and the characters, and even if they are not
:30:36. > :30:46.officially in our dose of the sport, they can pick-up the basis of the
:30:47. > :31:02.sport very quickly -- afficionados of the sport. So, as Jackie said, we
:31:03. > :31:07.have another good crowd in here. It is Friday the 21st of February, a
:31:08. > :31:15.significant day for British curling fans, Rhona and her team winning in
:31:16. > :31:26.2002. We will remind you of this later on, this afternoon, with the
:31:27. > :31:33.British team taking on the Canadians. It would not be
:31:34. > :31:41.unfettered to say that the Great Britain are the underdogs -- that
:31:42. > :31:56.Great Britain are the underdogs. Canada with a wonderful gold medal
:31:57. > :32:06.for Jennifer Jones, thoroughly deserved, even though it was not the
:32:07. > :32:14.best of finals. None of the nerves that Eve Muirhead had to ensure to
:32:15. > :32:23.deliver the bronze medal. I think it was the Swedish star, there was an
:32:24. > :32:33.unfortunate pick-up, gave away two, Canada had a three shot lead going
:32:34. > :32:38.into the final end. It was well-deserved, they were the team
:32:39. > :32:44.throughout the competition. Jennifer Jones and the Canadian girls have
:32:45. > :32:51.fought very hard all week. Jennifer herself was occasionally up against
:32:52. > :32:58.it and she pulled every shot out of the bag. Delighted for them. We see
:32:59. > :33:07.a lot of stones starting to gather up in this end. China have the
:33:08. > :33:15.hammer. The yellow Swedish stone sitting there, it just takes one big
:33:16. > :33:28.shot and that Swedish stone could go. Niklas Edin has to be careful.
:33:29. > :33:33.You can take the auction, -- he can take the option, he can see most of
:33:34. > :33:53.that red. Fredrik Lindberg throwing an
:33:54. > :34:01.out-turn hit. Lovely shot. I think this is going to be a feature of
:34:02. > :34:16.this game, Liu Rui does not mind putting shots in and I think we will
:34:17. > :34:29.be seeing some big hits. They throw these stones so accurately. What
:34:30. > :34:38.always intrigues me, the ladies and gents game is different because it
:34:39. > :34:48.just takes one big powerful throw of the stone. The end is then
:34:49. > :35:04.completely turned on its head. These guys will keep plugging away. Ba
:35:05. > :35:13.Dexin, the Chinese second. Fredrik Lindberg and Sebastian Kraupp go
:35:14. > :35:16.back a long way. Fredrik Lindberg used to play second and third for
:35:17. > :35:32.Sebastian Kraupp when Sebastian Kraupp was the skip before they
:35:33. > :35:46.joined up with Niklas Edin. That over curled. He got the shot but if
:35:47. > :35:59.you are going to be trying to put pressure on you want to keep your
:36:00. > :36:05.shooter in the house. Xu Xiaoming is married to the skip of the Korean
:36:06. > :36:13.women's team, who we thought might have been a surprise package in the
:36:14. > :36:16.women's tournament. They had a chance of getting into the
:36:17. > :36:27.tie-break, but it was not to be for them. The next Winter Olympics is in
:36:28. > :36:36.Korea. We were talking about the development of the game. I have seen
:36:37. > :36:41.a few articles over the last couple of days about the right way to
:36:42. > :36:49.develop your teams and to create medal winning teams and this idea of
:36:50. > :36:56.a funded programme, the squad system, and certainly from a Korean
:36:57. > :37:03.point of view, that is the route they seem to be taking. More and
:37:04. > :37:08.more countries are following that pathway, creating funding from
:37:09. > :37:23.somewhere and having youngsters be full-time athletes. This sport is
:37:24. > :37:28.changing. Because it is an Olympic sport it adds a different dimension
:37:29. > :37:34.to it. There is debate over whether some nations feel it is the pinnacle
:37:35. > :37:45.of their sporting career. We have the world every year in curling will
:37:46. > :37:50.. Some teams have focused on being world champions and have to change
:37:51. > :37:58.their focus for the Olympics. It puts you on the same level, the
:37:59. > :38:05.Olympics, as a great skier or cyclist or athlete, the Olympic gold
:38:06. > :38:14.medal has its own currency. All sports have World Championships, it
:38:15. > :38:22.is not that they are devalued... It is a platform here. It is so well
:38:23. > :38:32.publicised that the platform allows you to emphasise your sport and to
:38:33. > :38:40.get credit where credit is due, but it also brings its pressures. It
:38:41. > :38:43.shows who can deal with that. If you have the World Championships every
:38:44. > :38:49.year and it does not go well, it is not that long before you might get
:38:50. > :38:58.another chance. With the Olympics it is four years. Mirjam Ott yesterday,
:38:59. > :39:04.she cannot really think, what is she going to be doing in four years
:39:05. > :39:12.time? You have to commit to a programme. I am not going to see a
:39:13. > :39:20.sacrifice, but commits to your dream -- commit to your dream, it is not
:39:21. > :39:35.for 12 months, it is for a three or four years. As we heard from the
:39:36. > :39:40.girls, the age is changing in the sport and what I love about curling
:39:41. > :39:53.is that anybody can play it. Young and old. But youngsters have the
:39:54. > :39:59.time and the commitment. This is all getting a bit worrying for the
:40:00. > :40:17.Chinese skip. They have the hammer. A couple of shots did not come off.
:40:18. > :40:22.He has the opportunity to use the yellow and tap it onto the red. You
:40:23. > :40:29.can guarantee that Niklas Edin will throw something heavy and blast him
:40:30. > :40:34.out, that is what he is trying to avoid. He is trying to create his
:40:35. > :41:01.two. I will not be able to understand
:41:02. > :41:11.anything that anybody is saying! I am going to have to make it up. We
:41:12. > :41:19.are trying to interpret not in a linguistic sense, but look at the
:41:20. > :41:25.options they have. He is taking a little bit of ice so I think he is
:41:26. > :41:34.going to try to play it into the pack, but it is where he wants his
:41:35. > :41:38.shooter to lie that will be... He has to accept if he continues to
:41:39. > :41:50.play this sort of game it is not always going to fall nicely for
:41:51. > :41:53.him. He is always running the risk trying to create these scenarios for
:41:54. > :42:15.himself. He could not do something on both
:42:16. > :42:24.sides, I think that is probably the best he could do. The angle on the
:42:25. > :42:31.yellow is going to go through the middle, but he can use this on the
:42:32. > :42:47.right-hand side. He will try to catch the edge of it. Hit it right
:42:48. > :42:51.there. They want Fredrik Lindberg to come down and have a look. You will
:42:52. > :42:59.quite often find that there is somebody in your team who is good at
:43:00. > :43:16.angles. He is bringing his protractor! I like that! I was never
:43:17. > :43:21.good at angles. I hate to admit it, but I always used somebody else in
:43:22. > :43:28.my team, you can guess who that was, she was a very good third when
:43:29. > :43:42.I played with her. He has a great opportunity to make
:43:43. > :43:52.it as hard as possible, but I guess if he loses a two, it is not a
:43:53. > :43:58.disaster, I think it will only be a two, as long as he keeps his
:43:59. > :44:10.shooter. I think he is worried about where his shooter will spend out to
:44:11. > :44:18.-- spin. He is talking about it spinning out to ten o'clock as we
:44:19. > :44:27.look at it. You do not want to leave an easy tap on the red at the top of
:44:28. > :44:39.the house. Nicholas Eden coming down with plenty of weight. We were
:44:40. > :44:46.watching that from behind. That must have missed the guard by
:44:47. > :44:59.millimetres. Accuracy of the highest calibre from the Swedish skip. So
:45:00. > :45:09.good at their angles, I had to put my microphone down to applaud, that
:45:10. > :45:24.was so good. We were thinking it was going to hit the guard. The boys are
:45:25. > :45:27.so powerful on the sweeping. So he's not going to do anything with the
:45:28. > :45:34.red stone at the front there, because he can't. That was a real
:45:35. > :45:39.savour their from Niklas. I think there is going to be good play in
:45:40. > :45:45.this match, I am already enjoying it. I do hope the people back home
:45:46. > :45:47.watching are enjoying it as well, because what we are seeing is some
:45:48. > :46:08.really good play. And then a nice draw from the
:46:09. > :46:15.Chinese skip to take his one. So we are tied after three ends, a very
:46:16. > :46:20.good match so far. Three ends which resulted in both teams with the
:46:21. > :46:26.hammer only getting one. Partly due to excellent play, particularly in
:46:27. > :46:33.that end there, great shot making. This bronze medal match, just as we
:46:34. > :46:44.hoped, providing some top-quality curling.
:46:45. > :46:52.Just watching this draw, I would love to see that Nicholas Eden shot
:46:53. > :47:02.again. Liu Rui doing what he had to do. -- that Niklas Edin shot. So, a
:47:03. > :47:06.good atmosphere for this bronze medal match. And as we keep
:47:07. > :47:14.reminding you, this afternoon, the match begins at 1.30, and we will be
:47:15. > :47:27.over on BBC One at 1.45 for that match. David Murdoch against Rad
:47:28. > :47:36.Jacobs -- Brad Jacobs, Great Britain taking on Canada, assured of a
:47:37. > :47:40.silver medal at the very least. Can they surprise the team who certainly
:47:41. > :47:57.consider themselves to be the best in this competition?
:47:58. > :48:09.Viktor Kjall plays lead for Sweden. Both teams already shooting 90%,
:48:10. > :48:15.good quality, good start to this bronze medal match. Let's hope they
:48:16. > :48:22.keep it up. I think what we will see in this game is that somebody
:48:23. > :48:26.desperately needs to win this medal. There is only one medal up for grabs
:48:27. > :48:32.here. Yesterday's final wasn't the best game that we had commented on,
:48:33. > :48:38.because there are two medals up for grabs. It is difficult to lose the
:48:39. > :48:45.gold medal, but you still get a silver. In this match, the winner
:48:46. > :48:50.gets everything, and for the team that finishes fourth, that is the
:48:51. > :48:59.worst place to finish. I have been fourth at the Olympics. It is not
:49:00. > :49:15.nice. Me, too. Not nice at all. So you can feel the dedication.
:49:16. > :49:23.Not the best of shots from Zang Jialiang, the first hint of a
:49:24. > :49:59.mistake, you might say. China here will be hoping to come in
:50:00. > :50:06.and in turn. They won't want to bump too much. Otherwise that gives
:50:07. > :50:12.Niklas the opportunity to follow it down and tap it through.
:50:13. > :50:33.So these two second players here, very evenly matched. He is being
:50:34. > :50:38.asked for an in-turn. And the break is coming now. It was sitting quite
:50:39. > :50:46.high there for a while, but once it takes that draw, it really... Not as
:50:47. > :50:52.much as they would have liked. It was wide for a long time. We have
:50:53. > :50:58.seen that all week. The ice has been very good, and we haven't had many
:50:59. > :51:04.complaints. There has been the old pick-up, but the ice has played the
:51:05. > :51:10.same all week, and very weight dependent. If you put too much in
:51:11. > :51:18.the delivery of the stone, it doesn't take the same poll. An
:51:19. > :51:38.opportunity here for China to catch this and roll in. Just throwing a
:51:39. > :51:45.delicate weight down here, he is not throwing heavy at it. That has
:51:46. > :51:51.unfortunately just got too much right there. A nice attempt. He has
:51:52. > :52:05.tucked his own stone against Swedish stone. Just about freezing on there.
:52:06. > :52:18.I think most matches, we have seen at least one, most matches we have
:52:19. > :52:23.done, certainly. We mentioned eve in the very first end against Canada.
:52:24. > :52:28.It is very difficult to prevent it. It happens at most competitions. The
:52:29. > :52:34.organising committees have put a lot of work into try to make it as
:52:35. > :52:39.pick-up free as possible. Before the competitors come onto the ice, they
:52:40. > :52:43.have to step across a sticky pad of paper, and that is supposed to take
:52:44. > :52:48.off any debris on the bottom of their curling shoes before they get
:52:49. > :52:55.on the ice. But there are carpets down the size, things come off
:52:56. > :53:05.people's jumpers or a hair off the brush, and it can be really small
:53:06. > :53:10.piece of debris that causes a major bit of discrepancy on the stone.
:53:11. > :53:19.Could be a lot of hair product out there as well! These guys use more
:53:20. > :53:28.hair product than a lot of the women do. As my husband would say, it's
:53:29. > :53:31.not a fashion show. This is coming nicely now, they will
:53:32. > :53:41.probably just finish it at the end. No, they are going to leave it.
:53:42. > :54:01.Each time we come down here and freeze on these back stones, we are
:54:02. > :54:09.getting closer and closer to the T-line, and at some point, somebody
:54:10. > :54:15.will get that throw on, and it is impossible for the opposition to
:54:16. > :54:18.follow it and better it. And Sweden with the hammer here, they want to
:54:19. > :54:25.try to force the issue a little bit. That is looking pretty good. Just
:54:26. > :54:36.get that to curl a little more. That has done well. And China will just
:54:37. > :54:37.follow that down. If he gets a good stone in here, it will make things
:54:38. > :54:54.difficult. So, and in turn draw. And in turn is
:54:55. > :55:01.a clockwise rotation of the stone. It should move to three feet,
:55:02. > :55:11.depending on the draw of the ice. A well laid stone would be about three
:55:12. > :55:15.and a half times. Somebody asked the other day why'd they don't spin the
:55:16. > :55:27.stone, but if you spin it, it holds the line straighter. Three or three
:55:28. > :55:31.and a half rotations is good. Good sweeping there, so much of a feature
:55:32. > :55:35.of the game with the men, just where that extra bit of strength can
:55:36. > :55:40.affect the stone even more. Just couldn't quite get it tucked in, was
:55:41. > :55:41.a little short, and that gives Sebastian Kraupp the chance to see
:55:42. > :55:55.it. But this has got to be right. Another very accurate shot, very
:55:56. > :56:03.accurate indeed. Lovely stone delivered. And cleanly taken out.
:56:04. > :56:04.Obviously didn't want to hit his own. Sweden playing the yellows, of
:56:05. > :56:35.course. Very good indeed. So again, plenty of stones in the
:56:36. > :56:48.house here. Liu never frightened to ask questions of the opposing skip.
:56:49. > :56:57.He will want to come back in their where Xu, his third, has just been.
:56:58. > :57:02.It might just get by. Excellent! A well judged stone. I thought we were
:57:03. > :57:08.going to catch the red at the top of the house there. Excellent shot from
:57:09. > :57:14.the Chinese skip, Liu. And he has done that all week. He is not afraid
:57:15. > :57:18.of all these stones in play. And as much as I have kept my eye on the
:57:19. > :57:22.game we have been involved in, I have always had a look out of the
:57:23. > :57:27.corner of my eye at how China have doing, and often there are many
:57:28. > :57:32.stones in play. We have been pointing all week saying, look at
:57:33. > :57:35.that. He is not perturbed by the chance that it could go horribly
:57:36. > :57:40.wrong. He keeps putting the pressure on. And Niklas is going to have to
:57:41. > :57:50.respond to that. Niklas I think is going to try to
:57:51. > :57:54.throw a big weight down here and just kiss this out, the same as
:57:55. > :57:55.Sebastien did before him, and the accuracy on this has to be so, so
:57:56. > :58:12.good. Oh, he has done well again. That is
:58:13. > :58:18.another nice shot. Anything you can do, I can do better. I can't
:58:19. > :58:24.emphasise how difficult these shots are, the accuracy of that when you
:58:25. > :58:28.let it go. And the confidence he has had from already making a couple of
:58:29. > :58:37.those that have come off. He is not frightened to take it on. And still
:58:38. > :58:41.lying two, Sweden. Hoping to draw in here, I'm thinking, and turn it
:58:42. > :58:56.right in behind the guard. He can't leave an edge at all. He does know
:58:57. > :59:02.what the wages, -- the weight is, he has just played it. But it is hard
:59:03. > :59:10.to do these shop back-to-back. -- these shots.
:59:11. > :59:20.He has got a chance again. You can see it taking the draw.
:59:21. > :59:27.A really good shot again from the Chinese skip. It is great to watch
:59:28. > :59:39.the two of them going at each other. So cool under pressure. So if Niklas
:59:40. > :59:46.just comes down here and caps that, will it... ? It is always difficult
:59:47. > :59:56.to tell from the camera. Are they lying second? I think the red is
:59:57. > :00:01.beating the yellow at the back. He is not sure, and that will influence
:00:02. > :00:05.the options he has here. He might leave it up to the measure. The
:00:06. > :00:11.first thing he has to do is get rid of that Chinese stone. Kraupp is
:00:12. > :00:18.suggesting maybe just draw in. That is another option. And if he was
:00:19. > :00:24.able to follow the Chinese skip, the shot he has just played, then he
:00:25. > :00:30.would certainly have his two. Yes, because if he tries to chip it, he
:00:31. > :00:42.will lose the stone he has just thrown. This is a very difficult
:00:43. > :00:58.shot. He has to draw pretty much onto it and move about four or five
:00:59. > :01:09.inches. He only gets to play one. Once again Niklas Edin with a tough
:01:10. > :01:17.shot. He has been up to it so far. He has played seven shots with 100%
:01:18. > :01:26.accuracy. Can he make it with this one?
:01:27. > :01:50.They are leaving this, watching it closely. This is going to be tight.
:01:51. > :01:56.It has a chance. Has he done it? He would have loved to have moved that
:01:57. > :02:01.another couple of injuries for the two, but he will be happy with that.
:02:02. > :02:09.The team with the hammer has been limited to one either good play of
:02:10. > :02:21.the opposition -- by the good play. A good match so far. I am hoping
:02:22. > :02:29.this is an appetiser for the match tonight. We would love to have this
:02:30. > :02:33.sort of quality. It will be important for Britain to hang onto
:02:34. > :02:41.Canada and not let Brad Jacobs have an early lead because that will be
:02:42. > :02:45.difficult to claw-back. We saw that with Jennifer Jones against the
:02:46. > :02:50.British women, who played really well from the second end through,
:02:51. > :03:02.but could not get back that early advantage that Canada had gained.
:03:03. > :03:21.Eight height match here -- a tight match. Both skips not afraid to take
:03:22. > :03:24.the match on. China with the hammer so will see a guard put in place by
:03:25. > :03:52.Sweden. Zang Jialiang, the Chinese lead. The
:03:53. > :03:57.coach is from Canada and was asked to go and coach, it took a while to
:03:58. > :04:02.persuade him, the Canadian media were interested in the semifinal
:04:03. > :04:07.match and putting pressure on and then, surely you are rooting for
:04:08. > :04:12.Canada, and he said, my job is to make the Chinese team as good as it
:04:13. > :04:19.can be. Deep down of course he will always want Canada to win, but he
:04:20. > :04:24.said that that point -- at that point he was rooting for his guys.
:04:25. > :04:31.It will be interesting to see whether he continues. I think his
:04:32. > :04:38.contract is up until the end of the World Championships in April. Most
:04:39. > :04:42.of the contracts finish at the end of the Olympic season and then there
:04:43. > :04:49.is a lot of chopping and changing and a lot of interest to see where
:04:50. > :04:58.top watches go and I guess who is offering the most for them.
:04:59. > :05:08.They are going to have to work this really hard because it is starting
:05:09. > :05:18.to lose line. They have held that well. That is a good shot. He was in
:05:19. > :05:30.the team four years ago. This team is fairly new in terms of
:05:31. > :05:36.experience. They were six in the World Championships which helped
:05:37. > :05:54.them to get the ranking points they required to qualify. -- sixth. The
:05:55. > :06:00.woman might be disappointed, although they have not been playing
:06:01. > :06:12.quake as well recently -- white as well .
:06:13. > :06:27.China asking to remove the front yard, Peel it out.
:06:28. > :06:37.Do not want anything up in the front area that will add to protection. I
:06:38. > :06:43.like the game of cat and mouse at this is. It would be such an easy
:06:44. > :06:59.game without an opposition! If you have the hammer, you want to
:07:00. > :07:06.try to put all your stones on the wing so you leave yourself an easy
:07:07. > :07:08.shot at the end. If you do not have the hammer you want to make it as
:07:09. > :07:17.difficult as possible for your opposition to get an easy shot to
:07:18. > :07:24.play. This is the youngest member of the team, Ba Dexin, just 23. A
:07:25. > :07:56.straightforward peel for him. Neither team in the first five ends
:07:57. > :08:07.his heart too many opportunities -- has had too many opportunities. It
:08:08. > :08:27.has been about getting one. China will be hoping to change that here.
:08:28. > :08:39.Having to work less -- work hard. That is a mistake, a big mistake.
:08:40. > :08:48.That is a shame. If the sweepers touch the running stone it has to be
:08:49. > :08:58.removed. It is a bit like a pick-up, it can change the dynamics of the
:08:59. > :09:09.end and the players. Nothing can be done about it, you have to forget
:09:10. > :09:22.about it. The girls yesterday never showed one piece of emotion. Except
:09:23. > :09:31.Maria Prytz who gave away the two. She did not show emotion, but we
:09:32. > :09:46.knew she was feeling at. -- feeling it. I transfer Liu Rui to capitalise
:09:47. > :10:05.on that. He is having a good look with his vice skip. This is the sort
:10:06. > :10:19.of game he enjoys. He likes pushing these stones in, he does not mind.
:10:20. > :10:34.He has played a delicate weight to create a little space, rumble them
:10:35. > :10:43.about. The yellows that Niklas had put in are now looking pretty
:10:44. > :10:53.dangerous. If you hit the top red, they will spin out of the house.
:10:54. > :11:03.Sebastian Kraupp. After all of the hard work, they would not want to be
:11:04. > :11:16.any worse than a two. That is not going to come in.
:11:17. > :11:31.Liu Rui asking Zou Dejia to it and roll -- hit and roll.
:11:32. > :11:46.He needs to hit and stick in here. This looks wide. If he rolls out, he
:11:47. > :12:05.is giving the advantage back to Sweden. Not the best shot from Zang
:12:06. > :12:14.Jialiang. He knows the angles are not good for him. If he puts
:12:15. > :12:22.something up short... If you put it too close, these guys might run it
:12:23. > :12:28.back into the pack. You might run it back anyway but that is a riskier
:12:29. > :12:38.shot. I think he has to play that delicate weight again. Cap his own
:12:39. > :12:51.yellow back eventually. Move the spacing is to make it harder --
:12:52. > :12:57.spacings. If he was to play this with the right sort of weight, he
:12:58. > :13:10.would be able to tap his own yellow, the bottom yellow. We have
:13:11. > :13:23.decided on the guard. He is going to tempt him, not put his guard too
:13:24. > :13:37.close. Sweden lying shot, but it looks precarious . The Swedish girls
:13:38. > :13:43.are in watching the boys playing the bronze medal game. They have already
:13:44. > :14:01.played their final, having lost to Canada, but they do have an Olympic
:14:02. > :14:08.silver medal. Niklas with a guard. He needs to be close to the centre
:14:09. > :14:22.line. He needs to be in the right place, not too close. That is pretty
:14:23. > :14:33.good. Very good. A nice shot. You just see the Swedish stone that is
:14:34. > :14:38.sticking out, maybe a quarter of the stone, or he can use the one that
:14:39. > :14:45.Niklas Edin has just played, that is riskier. That is what I thought he
:14:46. > :14:55.would do, run it back into the pack. He is going to take it on,
:14:56. > :15:14.that is no surprise. Trust his judgement, his accuracy.
:15:15. > :15:34.Liu Rui looking to run this back into the Swedish group of four. What
:15:35. > :15:39.a great shot. The angles were difficult there, but he executed it
:15:40. > :15:45.well. And he has actually left the guard there to cover them. What a
:15:46. > :15:57.great result. Niklas feeding knew that that shot was on. -- Niklas
:15:58. > :16:01.Edin. He knew that that shot was on, but not that it would be so
:16:02. > :16:08.brilliant. You have to hand that the Chinese skip. I think if you get
:16:09. > :16:13.half of this, you could take both of these reds out. That is how this
:16:14. > :16:14.game is going to go. You play a good shot, I will play another even
:16:15. > :16:38.better. A big shot here for Niklas. He doesn't have much to go with
:16:39. > :16:44.here. Well done! Great shotmaking. And the Swedish women's team
:16:45. > :16:47.applauding that, as most people here in the Ice Cube Center R. Some great
:16:48. > :17:04.shotmaking here from both teams. Not a high-scoring match so far at
:17:05. > :17:05.all. That doesn't tell the story of what has been an excellent match up
:17:06. > :17:24.to this point. Of course, with that shot from
:17:25. > :17:39.Edin, any chance of getting two is gone, so Liu protecting the fact
:17:40. > :17:43.that they have got a hammer. We will be back in a few minutes for the
:17:44. > :17:52.second half of an exciting match. Hazel
:17:53. > :18:06.HAZEL: Thank you very much. A reminder that the men's gold medal
:18:07. > :18:09.match is at 1.30 this afternoon. It is 12 years to the day after Rhona
:18:10. > :18:16.Martin managed the same thing for the GB women. Is that a positive
:18:17. > :18:22.omen? And we will also be seeing some short track speed skating, the
:18:23. > :18:26.finale of those events. Elise Christie is in her favourite event,
:18:27. > :18:31.an event in which she has had so much success, the 1000 metres. She
:18:32. > :18:36.is trying to become the first British woman ever to step onto an
:18:37. > :18:40.Olympic podium. Wilf O'Reilly will be commentating this afternoon. He
:18:41. > :18:47.really helped put short track on the map in Britain.
:18:48. > :18:57.I grew up with my mum, alone, so she played the roles of the Father and
:18:58. > :19:03.the mother. She bought me a pair of in-line skates, where the 4-wheel
:19:04. > :19:10.scoring the front. She was helping me from one side of the living room
:19:11. > :19:14.to the other at her despair as the carpet slowly moved its way to one
:19:15. > :19:20.side, so she kept saying, let's skate the other way, so it will move
:19:21. > :19:26.back. I was able to in-line skate from my house to the ice rink in
:19:27. > :19:31.about 15, 20 minutes, going down through all the underpasses, the
:19:32. > :19:37.speeds and the bumps on the roads, it gives a terrific feeling of
:19:38. > :19:47.freedom. So for me, it was a natural transition from in-line skating to
:19:48. > :19:48.ice. I started figure skating. I remember watching John Curry winning
:19:49. > :20:03.his Olympic gold. That was my first aspiration to even
:20:04. > :20:09.take up the sport. Somewhere along the line, I realised I wanted to be
:20:10. > :20:15.that little bit more competitive, the rough-and-tumble, if you like.
:20:16. > :20:18.And even though figure skating gave me an incredible basic instruction
:20:19. > :20:25.on how to learn to skate and use your edges, it didn't really give me
:20:26. > :20:35.the thrill. There was a very good speed Skating club at Birmingham,
:20:36. > :20:40.called the Birmingham mohawks. They have a time trial, and you had to do
:20:41. > :20:45.three lap of the track, and you had to do it in under 40 seconds. I
:20:46. > :20:54.remember the start calling me to the line. I was shaking in my skates. I
:20:55. > :20:56.made the time, made the grade, and that was my first time of joining
:20:57. > :21:15.them. I am now an honorary member. I remember after the first day when
:21:16. > :21:19.I won the 500, going to bed that evening and putting my medal under
:21:20. > :21:22.the cushion, and waking up the next morning, at the first thing I did
:21:23. > :21:24.was put my hand under the pillow to make sure it was still there and I
:21:25. > :21:33.wasn't dreaming. And then I went and did it all over
:21:34. > :21:53.again, the second day. Winning the 1000 metres, that was
:21:54. > :21:59.pretty amazing in itself. The sport has obviously given me an incredible
:22:00. > :22:03.amount. I was this young lad living in Birmingham, and this has happened
:22:04. > :22:09.to me. It can really happen to anybody.
:22:10. > :22:12.And since then, only Nicky Gooch has managed to get himself onto the
:22:13. > :22:22.Olympic podium. That was 20 years ago. We have Jon Eley and Elise
:22:23. > :22:28.Christie going today, about 4.45 in Clare Balding's programme. We have
:22:29. > :22:33.been discussing about how to get more people involved in short track
:22:34. > :22:36.speed skating. There are a lot of figure skates available in ice
:22:37. > :22:40.rinks, but perhaps we should put some speed skate available for
:22:41. > :22:43.people to have a go at. Food for thought, but I'm sure that many
:22:44. > :22:48.people will want to have a go at some of the sports you have seen in
:22:49. > :22:52.the last 14 days. But no skates required in the ice cube arena this
:22:53. > :22:56.morning, just one slip issue and one grippy shoe. Otherwise known as a
:22:57. > :23:08.keeper, Jackie Lockhart. It is yes, the protective rubber
:23:09. > :23:17.Soul that you put over your slider to protect it. We call it a keeper,
:23:18. > :23:32.and don't ask me why! We think it is flat like a kipper. Yes, like a fish
:23:33. > :23:44.that you put on the bottom of your sole. Sending a postcard. Showing my
:23:45. > :23:52.age! It is social media now. Pigeons in my day.
:23:53. > :23:57.Welcome back everybody. It has been some very good play out here. I
:23:58. > :24:12.think that is what they will call us, grippy and slippy. Which one do
:24:13. > :24:19.you want to be? I will be slippy. We have seen a really good game here. A
:24:20. > :24:25.lot of excellent shotmaking from both sides. Both of these teams are
:24:26. > :24:32.so keen to leave this competition with the medal.
:24:33. > :24:42.Just in the break there, a quick word with one of the Canadian
:24:43. > :24:49.commentators. I think we all agree that it is a great match. A lovely
:24:50. > :24:53.appetiser for tonight's gold-medal match, Great Britain against Canada,
:24:54. > :25:05.where we will not be speaking to our Canadian counterparts until it is
:25:06. > :25:09.all over. Intense rivalry today. A nice roll behind the guard there
:25:10. > :25:22.from China, but Sweden hope to come down here and take it out.
:25:23. > :25:34.Always very difficult to hit and lie out in the wings there. So, at
:25:35. > :25:43.half-time, if you are Marcel Rock, chatting to your Chinese team,
:25:44. > :25:50.looking at the way they have played, and Niklas Edin stood up to it. They
:25:51. > :25:56.are putting their own pressure on at times. Would you change the way you
:25:57. > :26:00.are playing? No, I wouldn't. These boys have to keep doing what they
:26:01. > :26:09.are doing. Nicolas is playing some really good shots, but one error
:26:10. > :26:28.from them, catch the guard, and the whole end changes for these Chinese
:26:29. > :26:32.boys, so no, I wouldn't actually ask them to change what they are doing.
:26:33. > :26:41.A lot of these games come down to the last one or two ends. He had to
:26:42. > :26:51.be high of the yellow stone is to make is difficult for Sweden. Again,
:26:52. > :26:56.really good accuracy from Lindbergh. Squeezing past that Chinese corner
:26:57. > :27:02.guard, and picking out the stone at the back.
:27:03. > :27:10.It all got a bit raucous in here at half-time, jumping up and down in
:27:11. > :27:14.their seats, lots of music playing. Quite a few people have taken the
:27:15. > :27:18.chance to go off and get themselves a cup of tea, just coming back in.
:27:19. > :27:24.They wouldn't want to miss too much here. You just get the feeling that
:27:25. > :27:29.if one team were to let one of these ends get away from them, a mistake
:27:30. > :27:36.at the wrong time, you could easily give up a three or a four, the way
:27:37. > :27:40.this game has been playing. That is a better attempt at that stone, but
:27:41. > :27:48.not great finishing here, I have to say.
:27:49. > :28:04.I think Sebastien will be able to see an edge of that red.
:28:05. > :28:13.I got all of that, by the way! I heard all of it. He is just asking
:28:14. > :28:19.him to come down and catch it. And I think, roll across to the other
:28:20. > :28:30.side. He is playing a nice delicate weight here.
:28:31. > :28:47.This is taking a fair draw here, but he does want to roll. A good shot.
:28:48. > :29:03.He wanted to live there, -- lie there. They are gathering up.
:29:04. > :29:10.Yes, it may be was a slightly different tactic in the sense that
:29:11. > :29:12.that corner guard they put up was maybe a little wide, and they
:29:13. > :29:19.weren't able to come in behind it. We have a lone singer out in the
:29:20. > :29:54.crowd there. They want to be sitting two here at
:29:55. > :30:01.all times, try to force China back to their one-shot if possible.
:30:02. > :30:07.That Swedish stone just lying above the T-line on the right-hand side as
:30:08. > :30:16.we look at it. It is going to be very useful here for Niklas Eden. --
:30:17. > :30:21.Niklas Edin. And if he can keep Liu away from that, as Jackie said,
:30:22. > :30:24.limit them to one again. And of course, not give them the
:30:25. > :30:54.opportunity to run this end through. That was interesting. It is one of
:30:55. > :31:07.the few times that you would see both teams sweeping. From a Chinese
:31:08. > :31:20.point of view, the fact it is tucked in is an excellent result. He will
:31:21. > :31:34.be wanting to come down and sit right on top of this red. He has to
:31:35. > :31:39.be very careful. We have seen a few Chinese stones come down here that
:31:40. > :31:53.have not finished as much as we thought they would. He is shooting
:31:54. > :32:02.100%, Niklas Edin, Liu Rui is shooting 96%. If you put a little
:32:03. > :32:11.bit of weight on, we have watched these Chinese stones previously...
:32:12. > :32:17.The first mistake from Niklas Edin. He has not had too many draws to
:32:18. > :32:25.play. I can only remember one difficult one he had to make, not
:32:26. > :32:35.that that one was that difficult. China will be hoping to sit another
:32:36. > :32:48.shot across here. Quite far back, keeps it level, prevents Niklas from
:32:49. > :32:54.trying for an easy double. Keep the stones level. It is interesting
:32:55. > :33:02.watching the Chinese guys going back down the ice, sweeping, making sure
:33:03. > :33:08.it is nice and clean. We have topped about pick-ups before. I am not sure
:33:09. > :33:24.if that affected Niklas Edin or not, or if it was just his mistake.
:33:25. > :33:27.It will not be too far away from where Jackie indicated he wanted it
:33:28. > :33:46.to be. That is a nice stone. This end
:33:47. > :33:54.changed again. I feel as if I need to fasten my seat belt, because this
:33:55. > :33:58.is like a roller-coaster ride. One shot and it is looking good for
:33:59. > :34:06.Sweden and another shot and it is looking good for China. It is a pity
:34:07. > :34:15.it was a mistake from Niklas Edin. We have seen such high quality play
:34:16. > :34:27.so far from both skips especially. A straightforward shot from Liu Rui
:34:28. > :34:34.will emphasise the frustration you can see Niklas Edin is showing. It
:34:35. > :34:40.is not unusual to see him being as annoyed as that, he does show his
:34:41. > :34:43.emotions on occasion. He is really annoyed, but he has to pick himself
:34:44. > :35:17.up, it is one mistake. Something went down the wrong way
:35:18. > :35:24.for me! For the first time, two scored in one end. A mistake from
:35:25. > :35:36.the Swedish skip let them in. Sweden with the hammer in the next.
:35:37. > :35:43.That continues on the red button. We will bring you up-to-date with that
:35:44. > :35:49.later, but for now we are going up a mountain. There will be a
:35:50. > :35:57.37-year-old French woman. That is hardly ancient, but she could become
:35:58. > :36:03.the oldest woman to win gold in the individual event at the Winter
:36:04. > :36:13.Games. If she can keep her head together in the event that is the
:36:14. > :36:22.scariest of all. The ski cross. It is time for the woman to descend
:36:23. > :36:26.the ski cross track. It looks as if the Canadians might be attempting a
:36:27. > :36:33.clean sweep today like the French did yesterday. The Canadians are
:36:34. > :36:40.very strong. They won the gold four years ago. Her team-mate will be
:36:41. > :36:49.desperate to get on the podium. They also have Marielle Thompson who has
:36:50. > :36:54.been skiing very fast. Ophelie David is sandwiched between those two. The
:36:55. > :37:02.French have a chance of picking up a medal. They had four medals
:37:03. > :37:05.yesterday. Ophelie David, the elder stateswoman of ski cross, will be
:37:06. > :37:19.hoping to take the final cross to add to her victories. Fanny Smith is
:37:20. > :37:35.half English. She has an English mum. Do not put any hot liquid near
:37:36. > :37:38.you for the next 20 minutes! Having worked with Graham Bell for
:37:39. > :37:44.20 years or so, when he retired from downhill racing, add this sport been
:37:45. > :37:48.on the Olympic programme I get the feeling he would have had a go, but
:37:49. > :37:54.for now he is in the commentary box for the Forest Gump of winter
:37:55. > :38:25.sports, you never know what you are going to get.
:38:26. > :38:35.Georgia Simmerling was in the lead but over jumped it. She looks to
:38:36. > :38:47.have hurt herself. It is Fanny Smith against Kelsey Serwa. These two
:38:48. > :38:58.dominating the positions, but do not write off Anna Woerner yet. The
:38:59. > :39:06.Canadian has gone. Georgia Simmerling has gone.
:39:07. > :39:14.These two are looking very good. We could see this go all the way
:39:15. > :39:28.through to the final. Smith is going to have to start working this out.
:39:29. > :39:43.Kelsey Serwa has so much speed. Fanny Smith is a good racer. She has
:39:44. > :39:57.two more rounds to do it. She will analyse it. She has a big plaster
:39:58. > :40:07.over her chin. That is Anna Woerner. No, that is Georgia
:40:08. > :40:22.Simmerling. She over shot the jump at the top. She is moving. She is
:40:23. > :40:28.OK. Kelsey Serwa looking very pleased with the two performances
:40:29. > :40:35.she has put in so far. There is Georgia Simmerling, working on
:40:36. > :40:50.getting back up again. Something has happened to her pole. Fanny Smith
:40:51. > :40:58.had such a good start. When we come into the first of these, Fanny Smith
:40:59. > :41:01.clipped the knuckle, so you can take the inside lane but you do not have
:41:02. > :41:11.enough height to make it to the landing. A huge hit for Georgia
:41:12. > :41:24.Simmerling. That is not looking good. She lost her balance and gets
:41:25. > :41:37.thrown into the compression. It is a yard sale of skis and poles. Look at
:41:38. > :41:43.Fanny Smith, such good technique, looking for the inside line on
:41:44. > :42:02.Kelsey Serwa. Looking to find the gap.
:42:03. > :42:40.That is how the cookie crumbles, dramatically. Kelsey Serwa has the
:42:41. > :42:58.power. This is Anna Woerner. She came down from around 20 metres. She
:42:59. > :43:07.will get taken down in the stretcher. Here comes Georgia
:43:08. > :43:19.Simmerling. Anna Woerner will come down in a stretcher. You can see the
:43:20. > :43:35.medics working. It looks as if it is her right knee. All the work on her
:43:36. > :43:41.leg. The right leg was the one that was bent. It would have been in the
:43:42. > :43:58.Tomahawk as soon as she came to a halt. You can see the right ski. We
:43:59. > :44:20.scan through all of the biographies of these skiers... It looked to me
:44:21. > :44:28.as if Georgia Simmerling... Was winded? It seemed to me like she had
:44:29. > :44:43.slowed right up. We are waiting for news on Anna
:44:44. > :44:54.Woerner. It could be problems with her in the but we will keep you
:44:55. > :45:01.up-to-date. -- hard knee. The top five did not get through in the
:45:02. > :45:10.men's event. This is the nature of this unpredictable event. The only
:45:11. > :45:17.guaranteed part of ski cross is that it is going to be unpredictable.
:45:18. > :45:22.There is so little consistency. If someone has two or three podiums in
:45:23. > :45:28.a row, you no they are on brilliant form, otherwise you will see a
:45:29. > :45:41.spread, 16 men on the podium so far this season.
:45:42. > :45:51.Having said that, the women's game is going a bit more to form.
:45:52. > :45:59.These crashes look pretty dramatic. I was mentioning before I threw over
:46:00. > :46:02.to you guys, that had this been available to you after you retired
:46:03. > :46:12.from downhill, I'm sure you would have fancied this. This is your
:46:13. > :46:16.thing, isn't it, Graham? IDE try my hand at Ski Cross for a season, but
:46:17. > :46:22.I was also being paid money to sit in a nice warm commentary box and
:46:23. > :46:25.commentate on Alpine skiing, and I worked out very quickly which was
:46:26. > :46:37.more rewarding financially, shall we say! Indeed. And we see Anna
:46:38. > :46:43.Woerner, often get some more attention from the medics. This is
:46:44. > :46:53.probably the oldest form of downhill ski racing, thinking back to 1928,
:46:54. > :47:01.the massed start from the top, and it does have its roots way back.
:47:02. > :47:07.It is something we used to do as kids growing up in Edinburgh. We
:47:08. > :47:10.would all go up for the last run of the day, wait for them to turn the
:47:11. > :47:14.lights off and have what we would call a Chinese downhill, which is
:47:15. > :47:21.everyone starts at once and you battle your way down, no holds
:47:22. > :47:29.barred, pushing and shoving. And there are competitions that exist,
:47:30. > :47:36.and we call them derbies, off piste Mountain races. Ski Cross is the
:47:37. > :47:47.ultimate form of racing, because it is head-to-head. And these days, the
:47:48. > :48:02.Inferno in Europe, it is restricted to 1800 competitors, and they go one
:48:03. > :48:09.at a time. I have never had a chance to have a go, because it clashes
:48:10. > :48:15.with another competition, but they set them off at such fast intervals,
:48:16. > :48:20.you are overtaking guys the whole time all the way down.
:48:21. > :48:27.I think it is back to business with the second quarterfinal.
:48:28. > :48:38.Thank you, Hazel. Just as we were speaking, a band of fog seems to
:48:39. > :48:44.have rolled in. We are looking up from the bottom, and we can't see
:48:45. > :48:49.any other fog. It seems to be rolling over the hill. It is
:48:50. > :48:54.literally just sat on the start line on the upper section of the course,
:48:55. > :49:03.a tiny patch. We are waiting for it to go away. I was talking about the
:49:04. > :49:11.Dickensian fog, and I modelled my words and talked about Darwinian
:49:12. > :49:16.fog, and someone has sent me a picture of a dinosaur wandering out
:49:17. > :49:22.of the fog. It would make it even more dangerous.
:49:23. > :49:31.It looks like it has cleared, and we are preparing for the start. In gate
:49:32. > :49:41.number one, Katrine Ofner, stamping her feet into the front of the
:49:42. > :49:46.boots. Then Anna Holmlund, then Katrin Muller in the green bib,
:49:47. > :49:56.looked very comfortable in the first round. And Stefanie Joffroy, an
:49:57. > :50:01.awful seeding run but once she started, she made it count. She is
:50:02. > :50:06.the unknown quantity in this, she could be good or she could crash
:50:07. > :50:10.out. The camera searching for the start line through the fog. Under
:50:11. > :50:21.starters orders. Reloading the skis into the gate. And they are out! And
:50:22. > :50:29.a big hit from the Swiss skier there, has knocked her right back.
:50:30. > :50:38.We had pretty much ruled Ofner out, but she has had the best start. A
:50:39. > :50:49.big move from Joffroy after the first berm. They are barrelling
:50:50. > :50:59.through the fog. Ofner looking very comfortable through that roller
:51:00. > :51:02.section now, Joffroy working hard. Holmlund is making a move, and she
:51:03. > :51:12.is going to have to make it quickly. Here she goes. She has the inside
:51:13. > :51:21.line as they drift right to left. This will be a surprise. Two big
:51:22. > :51:29.seeds have gone out. That is a crash! Her knee seems to have gone.
:51:30. > :51:32.She flew so hard, and landed so hard, it seems to me that she is
:51:33. > :51:44.carrying an injury, and she collapsed. A big jump there. Ofner
:51:45. > :51:48.first, Holmlund second. Muller really threw her race away there.
:51:49. > :51:57.She had been so good in the seeding, and just blew it out of the start.
:51:58. > :52:08.We will have to wait and see how Joffroy is. Stefanie Joffroy went
:52:09. > :52:12.down. I think that was exactly the spot she went down in seeding. I
:52:13. > :52:15.can't believe that she has done it again, right there. She had such a
:52:16. > :52:28.good race in the eighth finals. This is the really bad start from
:52:29. > :52:36.Katrin Muller, where she tried to ride through the double after
:52:37. > :52:46.knuckling on the first drop. Joffroy made the move there, carried so much
:52:47. > :52:53.speed out of the first berm. She has the lead here over Holmlund. And
:52:54. > :52:59.then the Austrian is kind of safely out in front, but look at this
:53:00. > :53:05.enormous air. And just too hard on the landing, and the need just
:53:06. > :53:08.seeming to collapse there. She was in the back-seat, desperately trying
:53:09. > :53:17.to across to the right, just compressed the knee joint. If there
:53:18. > :53:21.is any weakness in that joint, that is going to test it out, for sure.
:53:22. > :53:41.Confirmation: She did enough to pressure Joffroy,
:53:42. > :53:45.let her know that she was there. The Swedish coach talking her through,
:53:46. > :53:51.analysing the run. Yet another crash, and another use of the
:53:52. > :53:55.medical team. It does look like another knee injury. Different, this
:53:56. > :54:05.one, though. When we saw Anna Woerner stretchered
:54:06. > :54:12.off, she looked reasonably fit going in and had a Tomahawk of a crash.
:54:13. > :54:20.But Joffroy, she came down very hard, and looked to just kind of sit
:54:21. > :54:23.back and collapse. She had a crash in the seeding rounds, so
:54:24. > :54:31.potentially was carrying an injury going into this competition.
:54:32. > :54:37.So, to quarterfinals down, and already... Of the two that we have
:54:38. > :54:54.seen, the winners from quarterfinal one, Fanny Smith and Kelsey Serwa,
:54:55. > :54:58.look considerably better. It never goes to form, though, does it?
:54:59. > :55:02.Katrin Muller probably should have done better out of the start, that
:55:03. > :55:06.is what she will be kicking herself about. She blew it there. She is a
:55:07. > :55:23.good skier. We have another very good race
:55:24. > :55:36.coming up. Marielle Thompson, current World Cup leader, in against
:55:37. > :55:45.Katya Crema, who I really rate. And Yulia Livinskaya. I think her days
:55:46. > :55:49.are numbered. She is having to fight off the competitors and is not being
:55:50. > :55:52.able to ski out of the league. I think the fact that she is prepared
:55:53. > :55:58.to fight off other competitors is a good sign. A little bit of pushing
:55:59. > :56:05.and shoving going on. Katya Crema in the yellow bib.
:56:06. > :56:13.Marielle Thompson, one of the two Canadians left in this now. Kelsey
:56:14. > :56:22.Serwa and Marielle Thompson could look very good. The Canadians have
:56:23. > :56:29.lots to cheer about at the moment. I have to say, they are looking
:56:30. > :56:32.strong. Serwa and Thompson. There will be no clean sweep on the
:56:33. > :56:38.podium, though, because they have lost Georgia Simmerling. She crashed
:56:39. > :56:44.out in the first of these quarterfinals.
:56:45. > :56:52.The French, it is difficult to tell, isn't it, whether yesterday they
:56:53. > :56:56.were working together or it was just the speed that they were generating.
:56:57. > :57:10.Certainly there were enough challenges on them. It was the fact
:57:11. > :57:23.that chap meet -- Midol was able to go through on the coat-tails of
:57:24. > :57:30.Chapuis. Simmerling worked hard, as did Anna Woerner, to her credit.
:57:31. > :57:31.Woerner, the big German, just making sure that she pushed them all in
:57:32. > :57:41.that third place. And I think you've got to race your
:57:42. > :57:46.own race. You can't hang around waiting for someone to make it into
:57:47. > :57:54.second. The medics working very quickly here to stabilise Stefanie
:57:55. > :58:02.Joffroy. I think it is another knee problem, landing in the back-seat,
:58:03. > :58:07.compressing the knee joint down. It is that anterior cruciate ligament
:58:08. > :58:12.that causes the problem when you have that compression injury. That
:58:13. > :58:18.is how I tore mine, a backward seat in a fall. I managed to get away
:58:19. > :58:19.with not damaging anything else in my knee apart from the cruciate
:58:20. > :58:32.ligament. We saw the guy up at the top there
:58:33. > :58:37.with his cordless drill, just structuring the base, and has a
:58:38. > :58:41.really stiff brush attached like a drill bit and they just spin that,
:58:42. > :58:50.and they are using that to structure the base. You have wax on the base
:58:51. > :59:05.of the ski, it is a porous plastic. You melt wax into those paws, --
:59:06. > :59:11.pores, and then you melt the wax, which then glides over the top of a
:59:12. > :59:18.lay of water. The modern waxes include fluorocarbons, which is a
:59:19. > :59:24.form of Teflon. People started to put them onto the skis as well as
:59:25. > :59:34.wax. And some of those hydrofluorocarbons, you can pay up
:59:35. > :59:40.to ?100 for a gram of the dust. So that is gone in the first 40 metres,
:59:41. > :59:48.isn't it? Yes, that will give you your start, but the start is so
:59:49. > :59:52.crucial in ski cross. They work particularly well when the snow is
:59:53. > :59:57.wet, warm and wet snow, it works brilliantly for them, and there is
:59:58. > :00:03.various different ways of putting that last-minute wax on. A lot of
:00:04. > :00:07.the wax that you put into a ski will be built up over sessions of waxing
:00:08. > :00:12.and skiing and waxing and skiing, and there is such a thing as a
:00:13. > :00:20.hotbox now, where you can wax skis and put them in a hotbox, parks and
:00:21. > :00:51.in a sauna for couple of hours. Like a coat of varnish. Marielle Thompson
:00:52. > :01:03.qualified in third. Yulia Livinskaya is the lowest seed in the outside
:01:04. > :01:15.lane. Marielle Thompson is in the lead. Sanna Luedi just behind her.
:01:16. > :01:27.Yulia Livinskaya desperately trying to keep with the Canadian and the
:01:28. > :01:38.Swiss out in front. Sanna Luedi has the inside line. We'll Marielle
:01:39. > :01:49.Thompson make a move? Can she get close to Marielle Thompson? Sanna
:01:50. > :01:55.Luedi leads. The person that Katya Crema will not want to see a head of
:01:56. > :02:08.art is Marielle Thompson -- ahead of her. Closing the gap. Not enough.
:02:09. > :02:22.She has the inside line, but she has dropped off a little bit. Sanna
:02:23. > :02:31.Luedi is down. Marielle Thompson first, Katya Crema second. You have
:02:32. > :02:43.to give it to Katya Crema because she forced that error with great
:02:44. > :02:58.skiing. That put the cat amongst the pigeons. It was like two doormen
:02:59. > :03:02.bearing down on a patron. Sanna Luedi has no one else to blame but
:03:03. > :03:16.herself. When the pressure came, she could not handle it. Look at Katya
:03:17. > :03:24.Crema, she is gunning for this. Brilliant racing. At this point
:03:25. > :03:33.Sanna Luedi had it in the bag. This is where Katya Crema tried to make a
:03:34. > :03:41.move on Marielle Thompson, but Marielle Thompson shut the door. I
:03:42. > :03:52.think it was Marielle Thompson coming past her that caused the
:03:53. > :04:01.problem. A brilliant move from Katya Crema. She went right inside Sanna
:04:02. > :04:10.Luedi. One massive jump to the finish. She will progress to the
:04:11. > :04:11.semi-finals. Good to see one of these quarterfinals, down without
:04:12. > :04:46.the need for medical assistance. This is the final quarter. Jenny
:04:47. > :05:16.Owens, fifth at the World Championships. Sandra Naeslund just
:05:17. > :05:29.17. They are in order of their seeding times. Ophelie David is out
:05:30. > :05:32.and moving well and flying. What an amazing start from the French
:05:33. > :06:01.victory in. -- veteran. Jenny Owens is making a move and is
:06:02. > :06:10.into second. Sandra Naeslund looking to make a move. Ophelie David
:06:11. > :06:20.looking comfortable in the lead. Sandra Naeslund as the speed. Jenny
:06:21. > :06:33.Owens is dropping back. Sandra Naslund is benefiting from being
:06:34. > :06:41.behind Ophelie David. The 37-year-old Leeds the 17-year-old.
:06:42. > :06:49.Sandra Naeslund followed Ophelie David, learning from the master.
:06:50. > :07:17.Ophelie David in first, Sandra Naeslund in second. Here comes
:07:18. > :07:24.Karolina Riemen-Zerebecka. Good to see her down in one piece. Ophelie
:07:25. > :07:45.David had such a good start. Jenny Owens had a shocker. Jenny Owens, a
:07:46. > :07:59.better start could have served her well. I am sure she is regretting
:08:00. > :08:11.that. More than any of us. There goes Karolina Riemen-Zerebecka. A
:08:12. > :08:27.huge jump from Sandra Naeslund. Ophelie David looking strong. Kelsey
:08:28. > :08:30.Serwa also looking strong. Marielle Thompson had her work cut out for
:08:31. > :08:53.her in her quarterfinal but she is looking good as well. I think we are
:08:54. > :09:14.getting some really evenly matched seeds now. Katrin Ofner, not one of
:09:15. > :09:29.the fastest, but she made it through with Kelsey Serwa.
:09:30. > :09:37.Fanny Smith, the lowest seed because of her disappointing seeding run, is
:09:38. > :09:46.forced into the outside lane, but it has worked for her so far.
:09:47. > :10:02.A great start from Fanny Smith. She is working these rollers so well,
:10:03. > :10:06.pulling her feet up to her chest. Kelsey Serwa pooled round behind
:10:07. > :10:20.Fanny Smith. Smith is looking good. Kelsey Serwa
:10:21. > :10:38.has work to do. A huge jump from Kelsey Serwa has
:10:39. > :11:13.let Katrin Ofner back in. Smith is all over the place. Kelsey
:11:14. > :11:23.Serwa has got it. Fanny Smith blew that. She had it in the bag and
:11:24. > :11:33.messed up at the final turn. Absolutely distraught. You could not
:11:34. > :11:40.meet a nicer girl on the World Cup tour. Absolutely gutted. Katrin
:11:41. > :11:52.Ofner talking to the referee about what went on. Fanny Smith skis off
:11:53. > :12:02.absolutely distraught. A brilliant start from Smith. Kelsey Serwa has
:12:03. > :12:07.been so good, but she veered off the track. At this point it was Smith
:12:08. > :12:15.and there was a pushing match between the Austrian and the Swede.
:12:16. > :12:22.That is what Katrin Ofner is on about. The Canadian had the chance
:12:23. > :12:32.to carry her speed through the corner. She was so composed. She
:12:33. > :12:38.finds a line without killing too much speed. The Swede came through
:12:39. > :12:46.cleanly and then we have Canada, Austria, Switzerland. Fanny Smith
:12:47. > :13:14.screamed at that point, she knew she had lost it. What a semifinal that
:13:15. > :13:24.was. That was incredible racing. Kelsey Serwa very pleased to have
:13:25. > :13:32.come through that. She was so lucky. Again, you put the pressure on and
:13:33. > :13:40.you see if it tells. Smith had not led up until that point. Fanny Smith
:13:41. > :13:45.got out in front and looks so comfortable for the first half of
:13:46. > :13:51.the race and then the pressure told, and Kelsey Serwa started to
:13:52. > :14:12.exert pressure. If you cannot handle the pressure you are not going to
:14:13. > :14:23.make the finals. Katrin Ofner and Fanny Smith will battle it out for
:14:24. > :14:35.positions five and six. The second semifinal is going to be just as
:14:36. > :14:46.tight. Final preparations being done. On paper, I would say Ophelie
:14:47. > :14:57.David and Marielle Thompson, but the young Swede... I think it is about
:14:58. > :15:20.Sandra Naeslund in the blue bib in rain -- Lane one. Marielle Thompson,
:15:21. > :15:22.the current world cup leader. There really isn't a weak link here once
:15:23. > :15:30.you get down to this stage. Can Sandra Naeslund make the inside
:15:31. > :15:39.lane work? A good start from Ophelie David.
:15:40. > :15:58.Thompson is right there. Those two in the lead experienced
:15:59. > :16:06.racers. The younger ones are at the back. Sandra Naeslund is so
:16:07. > :16:14.comfortable in traffic. And she has taken herself out! No, she is still
:16:15. > :16:17.in. No, she has lost it. If you get pulled out of the slipstream, there
:16:18. > :16:22.is very little way that you can catch back up. There is a lot of
:16:23. > :16:30.race still to go, never say never in ski cross.
:16:31. > :16:38.Ophelie David is a wily old fox, and she won't risk too much. Thompson is
:16:39. > :16:46.not leading the World Cup for no reason. The 37-year-old Frenchwoman
:16:47. > :16:51.Ophelie David, showing her experience there. The
:16:52. > :16:58.whippersnapper, the 17-year-old Swede, snapping at her heels into
:16:59. > :17:05.that third berm. A little patch of fog is there, but nothing serious.
:17:06. > :17:12.The move was when the young Swede made an attack on the veteran, on
:17:13. > :17:20.Ophelie David, and she just saw her off. She did.
:17:21. > :17:27.It was the inexperience. The Swede had no patience there. She wanted it
:17:28. > :17:32.all on the first berm. She could have waited it out. But maybe she
:17:33. > :17:42.knew, maybe that was the game plan. Good start from Ophelie David, but
:17:43. > :17:46.Marielle Thompson there. Ophelie David just holding the racing line,
:17:47. > :17:52.she knew that she could do that, and shut the door firmly. Sandra
:17:53. > :17:56.Naeslund took out her left ski, and Ophelie David effortlessly
:17:57. > :18:02.transferred her weight to the right and carried on with the line. Very
:18:03. > :18:08.impressive racing from David. I take it all back that not racing in
:18:09. > :18:11.traffic might not have prepared her. When you are 37 and you have been
:18:12. > :18:18.doing ski cross for this long, you know how to race in traffic. So,
:18:19. > :18:22.Marielle Thompson and Ophelie David advance to the final, where they
:18:23. > :18:29.will battle it out for the medals. Katya Crema and Sandra Naeslund will
:18:30. > :18:41.race in the small final for positions five to eight.
:18:42. > :18:52.So that is the line-up for the small final. Katrin Ofner, Fanny Smith,
:18:53. > :18:56.Sandra Naeslund. And the big final, where the medals will be decided,
:18:57. > :19:00.Anna Holmlund, Kelsey Serwa, Marielle Thompson and Ophelie David.
:19:01. > :19:26.A very strong line-up. The Canadians still with plenty to
:19:27. > :19:33.shout about down there. They have got two chances at a medal, Marielle
:19:34. > :19:37.Thompson and Kelsey Serwa. We haven't seen them working together
:19:38. > :19:44.the same way we saw the French yesterday yet, but they have been on
:19:45. > :19:49.opposite sides of the so far. -- opposite sides of the draw so far.
:19:50. > :20:02.That could change in the final. A few Brits down there. I saw a
:20:03. > :20:15.union Jack. And I saw a Welsh dragon earlier, as well.
:20:16. > :20:24.There is always a slight delay, as more and more skiers get eliminated,
:20:25. > :20:38.it takes a little bit longer to get the racers back up to the start.
:20:39. > :20:50.If you can hear the music coming out of here, you will be interested to
:20:51. > :20:56.know that Lizzy Yarnold met him the other night. She couldn't believe
:20:57. > :20:59.how small he was. Ophelie David will become the oldest
:21:00. > :21:31.winter Olympian to win gold if she wins today.
:21:32. > :21:41.A great atmosphere down at the finish, a real party atmosphere. I
:21:42. > :21:46.know that everyone will be watching on the big screen set up in the town
:21:47. > :22:07.there. As Ophelie David competes for the gold.
:22:08. > :22:16.HAZEL: And as we wait for the start, let me remind you of the three
:22:17. > :22:22.potential medal chances for Great Britain today. We already have four
:22:23. > :22:26.in the bag. We're just not sure what the colour is gain to be from that
:22:27. > :22:32.gold-medal match. David Murdoch and his men will be taking on Canada at
:22:33. > :22:36.1.30 today. Make sure that you are in front of a screen somewhere,
:22:37. > :22:42.whether it is at work secretly or at home. In short track, we have Jon
:22:43. > :22:48.Eley, who carried the flag for Great Britain. He has chances in the 500
:22:49. > :22:52.and is in the short track, and Elise Christie in the 1000 metres, looking
:22:53. > :22:57.very strong and powerful in her heat the other day. She goes into this
:22:58. > :23:01.having won a World Cup medal and a World Championship medal, the first
:23:02. > :23:08.woman to do that for Great Britain, so has definite medal chances. Jon
:23:09. > :23:13.Eley's best at the Olympics has been a fifth place. He is hoping just to
:23:14. > :23:17.make that one extra step towards the medal podium today. So that is what
:23:18. > :23:22.we are looking forward to over the coming hours, but it looks like we
:23:23. > :23:25.are going to be in for a few fireworks in both of the finals
:23:26. > :23:33.here. You were talking about traffic, Graham. What is the hardest
:23:34. > :23:37.of this to master? We have seen the technical elements, but when you are
:23:38. > :23:40.used to racing with no one else around, how difficult is it to keep
:23:41. > :23:46.your composure when everyone else is jostling you?
:23:47. > :23:51.GRAHAM: It is about tactical moves, as well. When you are skiing boot
:23:52. > :23:55.clip to boot clip, it is about having experience of doing that,
:23:56. > :23:59.because it can be a bit freaky when someone is cutting on the inside of
:24:00. > :24:03.you or you are looking to try to fill a gap and get past. If you get
:24:04. > :24:07.a good start, that is a great advantage, but you have to have an
:24:08. > :24:12.all-round set of skills for ski cross. You have to be able to turn
:24:13. > :24:17.well, job well, start well, and when it comes down to a final like this
:24:18. > :24:21.when you are up against everyone who is of your level of ability, it
:24:22. > :24:30.comes down to tactical moves and making the right move. And being
:24:31. > :24:37.wily, not going to early, not making a rash decision, but just trying to
:24:38. > :24:42.pick your moment to make the right move to overtake. You will often see
:24:43. > :24:49.that even if someone gets out in front, they never really get away.
:24:50. > :25:11.Katrin Ofner in the Bluebeard, Lane one. -- the blue bib. Sandra
:25:12. > :25:17.Naeslund, the 17-year-old Swede. Katya Crema, the Australian. You
:25:18. > :25:24.said that she was riding her luck to have made the semi. Let's see what
:25:25. > :25:27.she can do here. Fanny Smith tried to compose herself after the
:25:28. > :25:39.disappointment of missing out on the finals. She is kicking herself over
:25:40. > :25:44.that. She had the race in the bag. It will be interesting to see if the
:25:45. > :25:50.anger and frustration can manifest itself as speed in this small final.
:25:51. > :25:59.Ofner, another great start there. The Austrian was flailing off that
:26:00. > :26:07.John. And Sandra Naeslund tangling up the front there. Tangling with
:26:08. > :26:12.Smith. From first to last in the space of 100 metres for Fanny Smith.
:26:13. > :26:19.She has to pick herself up now and start fighting, get back in the
:26:20. > :26:24.game. She has lost another place to Ofner, the Austrian racer. Sandra
:26:25. > :26:31.Naeslund is so smooth on this course. She is sucking speed from
:26:32. > :26:35.every single piece of Touraine. She is working her way through it, and
:26:36. > :26:44.it is all that the others can do to stay with her. Here comes the
:26:45. > :26:48.Austrian, Ofner. Another great move from her. She has been the silent
:26:49. > :26:54.assassin of these knockout rounds. She will try to make a move on the
:26:55. > :26:58.Swede. Sandra Naeslund didn't ski that particularly well, so it will
:26:59. > :27:03.be tight as they cross the line. It looks like she has enough of a gap
:27:04. > :27:07.going on to the final kicker. Fanny Smith has raced this almost
:27:08. > :27:12.unconsoled ugly. It is as if she has been crying all the way round. You
:27:13. > :27:18.watch her body language in the last two terms. Sandra Naeslund, the
:27:19. > :27:24.young Swede, getting an incredible Olympic experience. Ofner chucking
:27:25. > :27:31.away the gloves and the poles there. Frustrated by that. She should be
:27:32. > :27:43.happy with her performance in this ski cross. Katya Crema with a huge
:27:44. > :27:49.smile here. That was a great start from Smith. She had done so well
:27:50. > :27:54.from that position. She had a week seeding run, fell over on this
:27:55. > :27:59.obstacle. And from that position, she made the Lane work for her. She
:28:00. > :28:04.had no business leading as many races as she has from the outside,
:28:05. > :28:10.but she made it work. Going into these Olympics, the Swiss ski cross
:28:11. > :28:14.team was one of the strongest, both on the men's and the women's side.
:28:15. > :28:21.They just have unfortunately failed to deliver. Fanny Smith the best of
:28:22. > :28:31.the bunch. It is the Canadians that are looking strong. So, Sandra
:28:32. > :28:41.Naeslund has won this seat, and that will make her fifth overall.
:28:42. > :28:49.No sign of Fanny Smith, she is away, she is off. She wanted a medal or
:28:50. > :28:56.nothing, and unfortunately she has come away with nothing, and she has
:28:57. > :29:02.no interest in places five to eight. Now it is time. All of this has
:29:03. > :29:09.brought us to one race. Who is your money on? The Panther, David? Green
:29:10. > :29:16.babe. Psyching herself up, in the zone
:29:17. > :29:27.# Green bib. She is stood next to this woman, Kelsey Serwa. The script
:29:28. > :29:34.has gone to plan so far. Anna Holmlund, in the yellow.
:29:35. > :29:39.The two Canadians tucked in there together. Can they make the start
:29:40. > :29:44.work for them? What can they do to shut out Ophelie David? She is such
:29:45. > :29:52.a good starter. She will give them all kinds of headaches in this first
:29:53. > :29:56.60 metres. Holmlund with another good line from the inside lane.
:29:57. > :30:02.Ophelie David superb over the rollers. The contact is between the
:30:03. > :30:10.two Canadians. They are out in front. David tucked in behind with
:30:11. > :30:26.Holmlund in fourth. Marielle Thompson in the Bluebeard -- blue
:30:27. > :30:30.bib, Kelsey Serwa in third. And here comes Serwa, making a move on her
:30:31. > :30:36.team-mate. Ophelie David making a move as well. And that will slow her
:30:37. > :30:41.down. Not too much, though. David is going to make a move. You can be
:30:42. > :30:45.sure that she will not let this final go past and just ski down into
:30:46. > :30:52.bronze medal position. And she has gone! Ophelie David, the Queen of
:30:53. > :30:58.ski cross, is out. And now the Canadians have a clear run to the
:30:59. > :31:02.finish. Will they sabotaged themselves by battling for silver
:31:03. > :31:07.and gold? They will, you can guarantee that, because Serwa will
:31:08. > :31:14.not allow her team-mate to just walk away with it. Marielle Thompson
:31:15. > :31:24.claims Gold, silver goes to Kelsey Serwa, and Anna
:31:25. > :31:30.It wasn't quite the one, too, and three for the French team, but one
:31:31. > :31:38.and two, it is not bad. The Canadian coaches more than happy with that.
:31:39. > :31:43.Canada in gold and silver. The veteran of the sport, anybody who
:31:44. > :31:50.deserves an Olympic medal more than anything is Ophelie David and she
:31:51. > :31:56.crashes out rose away her chance of a bronze. She will end her career
:31:57. > :32:01.with no Olympic medal. We talked at length during one of
:32:02. > :32:06.the injury breaks, here she comes, she finishes in fourth. About
:32:07. > :32:12.exactly this. It is better to risk it all, and fall, than to settle for
:32:13. > :32:19.what would have been a bronze, maybe? In her mind she had to race,
:32:20. > :32:24.she had to attack. She did. That is why she is so well respected on the
:32:25. > :32:30.tour. It takes courage to be prepared to fail. For that, she
:32:31. > :32:35.should be applauded. Fantastic race, two Canadians working together
:32:36. > :32:49.there. Ophelie David trying to apply pressure, pushed back to the left,
:32:50. > :32:56.give herself the first line. I think Kelsey Serwa knew she couldn't get
:32:57. > :33:02.past her team-mate. Through the step down. This is where David goes far
:33:03. > :33:10.too big. Just ends up on the tails of the skis. Cannot let that
:33:11. > :33:17.forward. Anna Holmlund keeping her nose clean. Ever so slightly
:33:18. > :33:25.twisted, sitting back on the skis, didn't have the balance in the air.
:33:26. > :33:31.Great slow motion over the negative hanging turn, both of them in
:33:32. > :33:36.perfect tuck position. Beautiful. Hibs turned, good upper body, lower
:33:37. > :33:42.body separation. Steaks tucked under the body. Look at that jump. Both of
:33:43. > :33:48.them exactly the same technique. Hands inside so the knees can move
:33:49. > :33:53.up past their shoulders. He don't get that chest hurt if you bring
:33:54. > :33:56.your knees up on the outside. So interesting looking at the French
:33:57. > :34:00.yesterday. Teams where you get trained together, we have seen it
:34:01. > :34:06.with the Norwegians in slopestyle, ten men, it is like doing a masters
:34:07. > :34:10.degree. The competition and shared level of ability pushes you up,
:34:11. > :34:16.forces the level of progression. That has permeated the French ski
:34:17. > :34:21.cross for the men, and it has done the same here for the Canadian
:34:22. > :34:24.women. In physics you call it the critical mass, once it comes
:34:25. > :34:35.together you have an expression of talent. They are doing a little
:34:36. > :34:42.dance now. Anna Holmlund absolutely ecstatic. Here is the confirmation.
:34:43. > :34:47.Marielle Thompson takes gold, Kelsey Serwa makes it one, two for Canada.
:34:48. > :34:53.Anna Holmlund takes bronze. The veteran, Ophelie David, as to settle
:34:54. > :35:01.for fourth. HAZEL IRVINE: Disappointment for the
:35:02. > :35:05.old guard, seven World Cup titles, for X Games gold medals but it is
:35:06. > :35:11.not to be an Olympic medal for one of the great ski cross races.
:35:12. > :35:17.We have been in our winter Olympic bubble for almost three weeks. Stir
:35:18. > :35:21.crazy? Just a little bit but very much enjoying it. We know other
:35:22. > :35:57.sports are available, particularly this weekend.
:35:58. > :36:04.There is plenty to keep you occupied out here as well. We are going
:36:05. > :36:07.straight back to the Ice Cube because it is the men's bronze medal
:36:08. > :36:14.play-off. We were watching it earlier on. Swedish against China.
:36:15. > :36:22.The Chinese have looked very good all week. It was 3-3 when we left
:36:23. > :36:27.them. Back we go to Jackie and Steve.
:36:28. > :36:34.A lot of pressure for both these teams, nothing in it whatsoever. It
:36:35. > :36:37.has been a good game. We have had if you ends where they have seen some
:36:38. > :36:44.spectacular shots played, a couple where it has been pretty quiet. I
:36:45. > :36:58.have no doubt these last two ends will be so, so good.
:36:59. > :37:03.We have made the point on more than one occasion, the quality of the
:37:04. > :37:12.match has been good. Very good at times. The only player who is not
:37:13. > :37:18.shooting in the 80s, 90s, has been Sebastian Kraupp. One or two
:37:19. > :37:29.mistakes have kept in from both of the third players. The two leads
:37:30. > :37:30.have done particularly well. A little further than he might have
:37:31. > :38:11.liked. The Swedish team spend so much time
:38:12. > :38:15.over in Canada, both Viktor Kjall and Fredrik Lindberg have got
:38:16. > :38:35.Canadian girlfriends. As far as the men are concerned,
:38:36. > :38:51.much better known in the curling fraternity over in Canada.
:38:52. > :39:02.Now is not the time to start making the shots. They have been very good
:39:03. > :39:05.through this whole match. The last two ends, we have seen time and time
:39:06. > :39:08.again. There have been one or two occasions where the last two ends,
:39:09. > :39:11.we have seen time and time again. There have been one or two occasions
:39:12. > :39:16.whether Chinese men have or an extra end. That might be something Niklas
:39:17. > :39:23.Edin might have done his homework on, if he can just keep them close,
:39:24. > :39:28.limit them to macro one, I think from their point of view, even if
:39:29. > :39:32.they try to get their two here, they should not be despondent.
:39:33. > :40:09.This is new territory for them. China here just asking to try and
:40:10. > :40:13.open up the sport for it line -- this four foot line. That is a nice
:40:14. > :40:45.shot. Ba doing an excellent job. Sweden
:40:46. > :40:53.just going to replace that guard. They want to try and create
:40:54. > :41:04.something here, no doubt they will probably tried to pull one in. Keep
:41:05. > :41:23.on to his two. I am sure Sweden don't want to lose a two here.
:41:24. > :41:39.It was interesting, making them think it is an 11 and much, their
:41:40. > :41:44.coach. -- 11 and match. Another nice shot. That is clever, hasn't
:41:45. > :41:58.panicked. He has decided he would like another read in the house. --
:41:59. > :42:05.red. It does leave the possibility for a double takeout from Sweden
:42:06. > :42:12.here. The rate is now in behind the red that we see out of the house.
:42:13. > :42:19.Got some cover behind it. That will give him the opportunity to take his
:42:20. > :42:29.two. Will he try a double takeout? Not without ice. He is asking to
:42:30. > :42:42.come up onto it. Probably a little tap. Just ask him to come onto the
:42:43. > :42:57.face of this. They have to be careful. It takes a huge pool. --
:42:58. > :43:06.pull. Well swept. Did well there. I thought they had left that too late
:43:07. > :43:07.because the minutes Acrobat minute it catches that red line it takes a
:43:08. > :43:16.huge pull. This is back to the second, third
:43:17. > :43:35.and fourth ends. He would have liked that more on the
:43:36. > :44:01.other side, slightly high. He has left a yellow in the house.
:44:02. > :44:18.Niklas Edin asking Sebastian to come round behind the red guard. He will
:44:19. > :44:20.want to sit third shot. Just asked for a little extra ice
:44:21. > :44:39.from his skip. This will curl along where he wanted
:44:40. > :44:42.it to. A couple of times they have been
:44:43. > :44:49.caught down here. It is not pulling as much as it has been.
:44:50. > :44:59.He has nice weight there, just didn't have the line. That is the
:45:00. > :45:28.same side as Niklas Edin came down earlier, no finish whatsoever on it.
:45:29. > :45:42.They are working hard. They did OK. It started to look as if it would
:45:43. > :45:52.slide a little. It has not taken Niklas Edin long to make up his mind
:45:53. > :46:04.about this one. He needs to hit and lie. He wants to roll slightly
:46:05. > :46:09.across to the right. Make it difficult for China to try to move
:46:10. > :46:16.it because it is close to their own red. He must stay in the house.
:46:17. > :46:18.These are nervous moments. Wiping their hands on the trousers, the
:46:19. > :46:49.Swedish skipper. -- skip. That was trying to pull away, as
:46:50. > :46:53.well, but it is OK. You can see how critical it was to hit and lie and
:46:54. > :47:05.stay in the house. If he had hit, it would have been a free tap back.
:47:06. > :47:37.He did stay in the house and that was just what was required.
:47:38. > :47:45.I do not think he is too happy with that. What happened? I think
:47:46. > :47:53.somebody has touched the stone. This is the second time... It might have
:47:54. > :48:03.been the violation. The red light is flashing. It means he has not let
:48:04. > :48:08.the stone go before the line. We spoke about it earlier in the week,
:48:09. > :48:15.they have a sensor inside the stone and if you do not let it go before
:48:16. > :48:24.the very front... It is hard to tell from the angle. You would think he
:48:25. > :48:28.had let it go. In Great Britain, we use video analysis and many times we
:48:29. > :48:33.have looked at it and it is difficult to tell but sensors are
:48:34. > :48:37.built into that line as well as in the top of the stone and you must
:48:38. > :48:46.have let your hand go before the front edge of the stone has got near
:48:47. > :48:52.the line. I was just about to say, as he was releasing the stone, the
:48:53. > :48:58.decision that they took to blank the eighth and take the hammer into the
:48:59. > :49:05.ninth, he had every opportunity of getting the two. Now, suddenly,
:49:06. > :49:14.Sweden have to work out how they can best take advantage.
:49:15. > :49:21.You cannot legislate for that. You plan and you think ahead, strategic
:49:22. > :49:29.thinking, and then you lose the stone. What you cannot plan for is
:49:30. > :49:41.pick-ups, but that is a bad delivery. You should be well clear.
:49:42. > :49:45.I would hate to think it was just a wrong movement from the electronics
:49:46. > :49:49.of the stone, but they are very good and they have been tested a lot.
:49:50. > :49:52.They are used in all international competitions. To be fair, they did
:49:53. > :50:11.not question it. What would you do, if you were
:50:12. > :50:16.Sweden. You can hear the discussion. Where do you put it? What do you do
:50:17. > :50:28.with it? We know how well they can throw the granite. Where do you put
:50:29. > :50:35.it so he does not leave the treble. Surely give them their one. I think
:50:36. > :50:39.take the red out. We see in the white. He is forced to play against
:50:40. > :51:27.three. Make him take his one. The big thing is where he wants to
:51:28. > :51:34.lie the shot. Hit the red on the white of the circle. Force the one
:51:35. > :51:39.and take the hammer. You have to trust yourself. If you have the
:51:40. > :51:42.choice of going into the 10th, one down, with the hammer, surely you
:51:43. > :51:51.would take that? Why risk anything else? Fair enough, if he played a
:51:52. > :52:38.horrendous shot and gives you two, that is different, but,
:52:39. > :52:47.I am not sure it mattered wedded to a seed input that. The Chinese skip
:52:48. > :52:57.was going to draw. Was he looking to steal? That would have been a bad
:52:58. > :53:04.call. One down with the hammer. He could have a horrendous shot and
:53:05. > :53:12.pick up three, or even two. That is a different scenario. We have seen
:53:13. > :53:21.this all week. There have been so many things happening in the last
:53:22. > :53:30.ends. The end is never over until the last stone is thrown. A basic
:53:31. > :53:36.error from the Chinese skip. It put him and his team in a lot of
:53:37. > :53:40.trouble. He needs to make sure of his one. And then they will have to
:53:41. > :53:41.cross their fingers and hope they can make something happen in the
:53:42. > :53:57.final end. He did well. He did very well. It
:53:58. > :54:03.was a good response from Liu Rui. Having blanked the previous end, not
:54:04. > :54:06.what he would have wanted in terms of how the end panned out, but they
:54:07. > :54:17.get one and they lead. As ever, we head into the final end
:54:18. > :54:22.with everything to play for. The men's bronze medal match is hanging
:54:23. > :54:33.in the balance. STUDIO: how tight was this end, it
:54:34. > :54:39.needed the measure. After a few moments making sure, the Swedes have
:54:40. > :54:48.the hammer in the 10th, they were just given the nod to make the
:54:49. > :54:55.scores 4-4 after ten ends. And already tense match, palpably
:54:56. > :54:58.ramping up the tension levels as we go into the extra end and China with
:54:59. > :55:08.the hammer. The bronze medal is at stake.
:55:09. > :55:13.The drama continues. It has been an enthralling ten, in 11 days of
:55:14. > :55:18.curling. Who knows what we have in store tonight with the men going for
:55:19. > :55:26.gold, Great Britain and Canada? But this is not over yet. Every single
:55:27. > :55:34.time Sweden had the hammer, China managed to limit them to one. You
:55:35. > :55:38.have to hand it to them. I'm not sure in that end anybody played a
:55:39. > :55:44.bad shot. It was building up from the start. Liu Rui has never been
:55:45. > :55:51.frightened to throw stones into the house and again did the same and
:55:52. > :55:59.asked Niklas Edin to respond. The draw he brought in, if he had not
:56:00. > :56:04.clipped... But he played a dangerous game. When you start pulling things
:56:05. > :56:09.around the centre, it does not always work for the person who has
:56:10. > :56:17.the last stone. Especially if you allow the opposition to get in
:56:18. > :56:23.first. He got away with that one. He did not create the opportunity... We
:56:24. > :56:35.play the free guard zone and that stone will be replaced. The white
:56:36. > :56:39.area above the rings, you are not allowed to move the first four
:56:40. > :57:10.Stones played. You cannot move your opposition's.
:57:11. > :57:22.Sweden with the two guards in place after the mistake.
:57:23. > :57:32.How are your nerves, China? You were asked by your coach, Marcel Rocque,
:57:33. > :57:37.remember when he came to the time-out, and he said are you happy
:57:38. > :57:41.to take it into an 11th? That is what they have ended up with and now
:57:42. > :57:49.they have to trust themselves. They do have the hammer. They have to
:57:50. > :57:57.have a winner. That is a steal for Sweden, all, the scenario which
:57:58. > :57:59.China will be hoping for, when Liu Rui has the chance to draw for the
:58:00. > :58:21.bronze medal. Can Sweden stop them? He needs to play a great stone here.
:58:22. > :58:26.Right around the two yellow guards. He needed the weight to bump it
:58:27. > :58:38.because the Chinese stone has sat high. That was very well played.
:58:39. > :58:40.Both teams have played pretty well. There have been wayward shots, and
:58:41. > :58:58.you have to expect that. The two skips, 93% for Niklas Edin,
:58:59. > :59:10.Liu Rui, 92%. The 23-year-old playing second, Ba Dexin. Peeling
:59:11. > :59:12.the guard away. Doing everything possible to allow his skip the
:59:13. > :00:16.chance to draw for the bronze medal. They are choosing to shift the one
:00:17. > :00:27.closest to the house. The first guard is quite high.
:00:28. > :00:33.He will keep doing this, Niklas Edin. Not wanting to force the issue
:00:34. > :00:59.yet, that will come. Sweden are just wanting to replace
:01:00. > :01:04.another guard. You can hear the effort they are putting into the
:01:05. > :01:22.sweeping. They want to get it as close as they can.
:01:23. > :01:30.It has all gone very quiet in the Ice Cube, the tension may be getting
:01:31. > :01:32.to the crowd as well. They know there has to be a winner in this
:01:33. > :02:06.end. No real mistakes from either side in
:02:07. > :02:12.this end. What has happened there? Goodness me. I just said there had
:02:13. > :02:22.been no mistakes. That is twice now into ands, China have burnt the
:02:23. > :02:25.stone. Another hog line violation. It was well over the line there.
:02:26. > :02:51.Errors like that just shouldn't happen.
:02:52. > :03:05.My goodness me! The errors on the last couple of ends really not
:03:06. > :03:08.necessary. A Swedish time-out. There is an extra end, they get the chance
:03:09. > :03:25.of another time-out, both teams. This league this is still heading
:03:26. > :03:32.towards a scenario where Rui Liu has some sort of short to play --
:03:33. > :03:39.obviously. The only thing Sweden can do, they know China have the hammer,
:03:40. > :04:31.they have got to make this so difficult.
:04:32. > :04:44.The coach has come down to try and help with the discussion. Eva Lund.
:04:45. > :04:50.When the opposition hand you the advantage, if you like, it is still
:04:51. > :04:56.not an easy scenario for Sweden. Of course they would have been hoping
:04:57. > :05:00.that they had the chance, they have got to steal this to win it,
:05:01. > :05:04.essentially. They have got to find a way to force a mistake out of the
:05:05. > :05:11.Chinese skip with his last stone from their point of view, that
:05:12. > :05:15.leaves them lying shot to win it. The big discussion there is where to
:05:16. > :05:26.put the stone, went to comment, how quickly to comment. -- when to come
:05:27. > :05:33.in, how quickly to, in. Sweden don't have the hammer here. They really
:05:34. > :05:38.want this to come right round. Right into the four foot. Just working
:05:39. > :05:43.this, trying to bring it right in. A good shot played by Sebastian
:05:44. > :05:57.Kraupp. A lovely shot. China have to respond now, pick
:05:58. > :06:06.themselves up after that mistake again, basic error. I am not sure
:06:07. > :06:10.how many of those hog line violation is we have seen in the whole of the
:06:11. > :06:16.round robin and the medal matches, but we have had two in the ninth,
:06:17. > :06:29.and now in this extra end. Basic errors. That can only be down to
:06:30. > :06:40.nervous, and nothing else. -- nerves. Hoping to hit this, he is
:06:41. > :06:54.going to throw some heavyweight down here. Not too heavy. He will want to
:06:55. > :07:01.get this on the nose. That one has gone back, as we can see it from
:07:02. > :07:07.here. That is not what he wanted. That almost went back on the center
:07:08. > :07:11.line. Just when you're skip needed his 30 has come up with a couple of
:07:12. > :07:16.horrendous shots, maybe that were not as bad as the hog line
:07:17. > :07:19.violation, but nevertheless, we were sitting behind us and we could see
:07:20. > :07:26.it was never quite on the line. With the weight it went down with, it
:07:27. > :07:34.wasn't going to move off. So now we can only see the yellow of Sweden.
:07:35. > :07:41.Of course, they are lying shot, there are two guards out there. This
:07:42. > :07:45.end, with China, they will have the last stone, they will have the
:07:46. > :07:47.chance to draw in, and what Niklas Edin as to do is block the route in
:07:48. > :08:02.as much as he can. I wonder where he will put this,
:08:03. > :08:09.Jackie. Difficult to know. If he puts it too high, there may well be
:08:10. > :08:13.the possibility for leaving China to get a better draw into that one
:08:14. > :08:23.foot. I think this will just be outside of the rings. He is also not
:08:24. > :08:26.wanting to set up an easy double peel either. Halfway, it is looking
:08:27. > :08:34.at, right on that center line if he can get it. That is a nice shot. As
:08:35. > :08:38.we look down the ice, one thing we can see, even though you might
:08:39. > :08:45.think, that is shot that he can draw round, come in, it is very
:08:46. > :08:54.difficult. And judgement would have to be absolutely perfect. He is
:08:55. > :09:01.looking at the other side. Looking at coming round the other side so he
:09:02. > :09:04.can tap it, push it back. That still leaves the out-turn draw that Niklas
:09:05. > :09:26.has got to come back. It has been an excellent match. It
:09:27. > :09:32.is a pity there is a pity those two basic errors from China have
:09:33. > :09:40.certainly put a little bit of a blot on their copybook. There has been
:09:41. > :09:42.high-quality from both sides, particularly the two skips. They
:09:43. > :09:48.have it in their own hands, literally.
:09:49. > :10:04.Watching this closely and intently, it will need to curl quite a bit at
:10:05. > :10:10.the end. Is that enough? That is another advantage to Sweden here.
:10:11. > :10:18.Just slides by. Niklas cannot cover both sides here. We know there could
:10:19. > :10:25.be a draw in them but he has tapped it ever so slightly. I don't think
:10:26. > :10:30.there is a draw down the side. Niklas has just got to be careful,
:10:31. > :10:35.he has got to look at if I was playing the last stone, if I was
:10:36. > :10:43.him, what would I see? My stone is sitting on the button, is there
:10:44. > :10:50.anyway I can come round? He will look at the left-hand side, he needs
:10:51. > :11:01.to decide where to play the most difficult shots he possibly can.
:11:02. > :11:07.They have one shot left each. He has two come right round and be right on
:11:08. > :11:13.the top of it. We do know if you play the right weight, you may well,
:11:14. > :11:21.we are looking down the sheet here, on the right-hand side, to the far
:11:22. > :11:26.rent, there is a draw in there. The draw on the other side hasn't been
:11:27. > :11:32.as good. The Swedish women's team we saw in the stands watching. He
:11:33. > :11:51.almost has a look of resignation on his face.
:11:52. > :12:04.Zou has not played well in this extra end. The last stone of his
:12:05. > :12:10.Olympic campaign, will it be to help his team secured the bronze medal?
:12:11. > :12:22.It needs to be good. He is looking to catch this red and come in
:12:23. > :12:30.behind. I still think there's a chance to come in there. I might
:12:31. > :12:37.have come down the right-hand side. How did that help him? Explain to
:12:38. > :12:41.me, Jackie. Can you? He must feel that to get the movement there he is
:12:42. > :12:53.only going to get half of it and he may roll. His yellow at the back is
:12:54. > :13:01.protecting, but these long guards, I... He will try and come around
:13:02. > :13:09.those guards, he will try, it will have to be perfect. Trying as tight
:13:10. > :13:16.as he can, come top of this and push the yellow back, ever so slightly. I
:13:17. > :13:23.am still confused about that shot. They made the decision. I don't
:13:24. > :13:30.understand how that helped him. This is it, then. The last stone of this
:13:31. > :13:35.bronze medal match. Can he reward his team with a bronze medal and
:13:36. > :13:40.relegate Sweden to fourth place for the second Olympic games in a row?
:13:41. > :13:55.It needs to be perfect, he is trying to draw right to the button. It is
:13:56. > :13:58.going to slide by. It is Sweden, the handshakes from two excellent teams
:13:59. > :14:04.who have played really well. Perhaps some reward for Sweden for their
:14:05. > :14:10.persistence, the world champions take a bronze medal in the men's
:14:11. > :14:14.competition, and for a long time, a long time, it looked as though it
:14:15. > :14:19.was China's to win, they had numerous opportunities. And when
:14:20. > :14:24.they had to play their best shots they were found wanting. That is
:14:25. > :14:29.unfortunate. Nobody wants to see that. You don't want to necessarily
:14:30. > :14:40.win it on a poor shot from your opposition. It was tough for China.
:14:41. > :14:44.HAZEL IRVINE: Well played, an excellent match. He will claim gold
:14:45. > :14:50.in the final, less than two hours time? It was on this day, the 21st
:14:51. > :14:55.of February, 12 years ago, Rhona Martin and the British women took
:14:56. > :14:58.the gold. It is in that spirit I am wearing the lucky jump from 12 years
:14:59. > :15:04.ago stop I have this on insole execute -- in Salt Lake City for top
:15:05. > :15:11.it is my way of metaphorically keeping my fingers crossed. It has
:15:12. > :15:17.been washed. To sound out the end of this programme lets reflect on the
:15:18. > :15:20.events in the iceberg Palace last night, the last of the figure
:15:21. > :15:25.skating events, and what a firestorm of controversy. If you didn't see it
:15:26. > :15:34.this is what happened. City-macro the Russian champion,
:15:35. > :16:20.Sotnikova. but we have had two in the ninth,
:16:21. > :16:23.and now in this extra end. Triple Lutz and triple toe loop. That was a
:16:24. > :16:44.cracking combination to open. That was a superb spin. A change of
:16:45. > :17:59.edge with in that, as well. The double axel and triple toe loop
:18:00. > :18:26.and that was huge! The triple flip. Triple toe, triple
:18:27. > :18:29.flip, not quite the landing she wanted. Do not lose momentum now.
:18:30. > :18:36.The triple salchow. And the double axel. The jumps are
:18:37. > :20:03.done. She get on your feet, everybody,
:20:04. > :20:08.this is turning into a special night of skating. The best she has skated
:20:09. > :20:14.it. She had a point to prove, maybe to the Russian Federation. They kept
:20:15. > :20:20.her out of the team event. Here she is, she has come to collect her
:20:21. > :20:25.medal. Maybe they were keeping her under the radar on purpose! I was a
:20:26. > :20:38.big fan as a junior. The transition year was not so great, but she has
:20:39. > :20:47.had a wonderful two days. That was a huge triple Lutz, triple toe loop.
:20:48. > :21:04.She came in the jump. A huge double axel but the triple toe was bigger.
:21:05. > :21:08.Again, there is the second one. It did not have enough running edge on
:21:09. > :21:18.the second toe loop to get the loop out. She could not have skated it
:21:19. > :21:31.any better. That was tense. Oh, 149.95. Wow. That is in the first
:21:32. > :21:37.place pay -- by a long way. Russia has a new superstar. This could be
:21:38. > :21:52.special. She said she was nervous yesterday. Queen Yuna, as she is
:21:53. > :21:59.known, had her Serena aura about her. Note jump beyond her reach, she
:22:00. > :22:04.was in full command of the performance -- no jump. This could
:22:05. > :22:29.be a fitting finale to the figure skating Olympic Games.
:22:30. > :22:37.The triple Lutz and triple toe loop of supreme quality to start. Can she
:22:38. > :22:47.maintain it? Double axel, double toe loop, double
:22:48. > :25:05.loop jump. Ladies and gentlemen, it has got to
:25:06. > :26:25.be gold. It is flawless. Ah! Goodness me. Sorry, the
:26:26. > :26:30.outburst. The crowd agreed. She did it four years ago in Vancouver when
:26:31. > :26:35.she had to come out and give the skate of her life as she did it and
:26:36. > :26:41.she then retired. She was persuaded to come back and won the world
:26:42. > :26:46.championship. She has only had one competition this year. And she has
:26:47. > :26:49.come here and delivered a skate like that. She is incredible. There is so
:26:50. > :27:09.little separating them. How did it stack up? I know you love
:27:10. > :27:13.to the presentation. The quality. The triple Lutz, the triple toe
:27:14. > :27:21.loop, the triple flip. Everything has been given its points, there is
:27:22. > :27:31.nothing to be pulled apart. Art, goodness me, it will be close. --
:27:32. > :27:43.but, goodness me. But it is not to be! She has lost it on the technical
:27:44. > :27:48.marks. Six points behind Adelina Sotnikova. And ahead of her in the
:27:49. > :27:55.second mark, but she lost it on the technical. Russia has the gold
:27:56. > :28:00.medal. Adelina Sotnikova. She is the Olympic champion. The first Russian
:28:01. > :28:05.woman ever to win Olympic gold. They have dominated in so many
:28:06. > :28:14.championships, such as the Bears and the dance, but never in ladies -- in
:28:15. > :28:21.the pairs. I thought they were amazing tonight. STUDIO: an amazing
:28:22. > :28:24.reaction with a petition demanding an open investigation.
:28:25. > :28:28.reaction with a petition demanding an open It has attracted 1.5 million
:28:29. > :28:36.signatures. It finishes with this statement. This is for fair
:28:37. > :28:42.sportsmanship, that is supposed to be central to the Olympics, it says.
:28:43. > :28:48.A lot of Korean names on the petition, not so many Russian. Let's
:28:49. > :28:53.look at what is coming up. Elise Christie and Jon Eley will be in
:28:54. > :29:00.action in the short track at 4:30pm. They are both going for medals. Dave
:29:01. > :29:04.Murdoch, can he and his men do it? 12 years to the day after Rhona
:29:05. > :29:07.Martin did it the Great Britain in the curling. Goodbye.
