:01:33. > :01:39.from the intensity and accuracy of curling it is time now for
:01:40. > :01:45.Britain's Bladerunners to blast off. Elise Christie and Jon Eley are both
:01:46. > :01:49.in the race for medals at the Iceberg Skating Palace tonight.
:01:50. > :01:56.Welcome back to the Olympic Park. You remember in London we had super
:01:57. > :02:01.Saturday and we were hoping this could be fantastic Friday. A silver
:02:02. > :02:06.medal in the bag thanks to the curlers, the Canadians were just too
:02:07. > :02:10.strong. There could be more to come exactly a week after Lizzie Yarnold
:02:11. > :02:15.won her medal in the skeleton because we are heading into the
:02:16. > :02:21.tightest race track of them all. The men's 500 metres quarterfinals are
:02:22. > :02:27.on already and Jon Eley is on shortly. He carried the flag at the
:02:28. > :02:31.opening ceremony. He was nominated by his fellow athletes and they said
:02:32. > :02:36.he was one of the most experienced men, this was his third Olympics, he
:02:37. > :02:42.also has huge respect from all the others and according to the chef de
:02:43. > :02:48.mission he embodies the spirit of Team GB. 500 metres is his best race
:02:49. > :02:56.and he has got a tough quarterfinal coming up. Then we will see whether
:02:57. > :03:03.one of the great comeback stories has a happy ending. Elise Christie
:03:04. > :03:06.has had some bad luck when she was disqualified from silver medal
:03:07. > :03:12.position in the 500 metres final and then she was given a bizarre did not
:03:13. > :03:17.finish for missing the finish line by one centimetre. She got abused on
:03:18. > :03:22.social media and very nearly packed her bags, but she pulled herself
:03:23. > :03:28.together and pondered on the positives. She is skating
:03:29. > :03:33.magnificently and won her 1000 heat after a supercharged overtaking move
:03:34. > :03:38.around the outside. The 1000 metres is the rays she knows she can make
:03:39. > :03:42.her mark in. She is the European champion and a bronze from the world
:03:43. > :03:47.Championships and has the talent and the fire to reach a final. After
:03:48. > :03:54.that as we know in this spot anything can happen. It will be
:03:55. > :03:58.supercharged. There is a massive crowd and I have seen the queues
:03:59. > :04:05.building up all evening. It is another busy day, so Jon Eley and
:04:06. > :04:11.Elise Christie coming up, but we have been catching up with the man
:04:12. > :04:18.who has been Britain's great short track speed cake, Wilf O'Reilly.
:04:19. > :04:25.Expect noise, tension and drama. What are Elise Christie's chances?
:04:26. > :04:29.She had three medal chances to win and the first two have gone
:04:30. > :04:33.dramatically wrong. Her best distance, the last day of the short
:04:34. > :04:39.track speed skating I still believe she is in with a good chance of
:04:40. > :04:51.getting a medal. It is a top field. Who are her biggest rivals? All five
:04:52. > :04:55.of the skaters like this great -- like to escape from the front. She
:04:56. > :04:59.does not want to lead all the way from the front, but she needs first
:05:00. > :05:06.or second place and she wants to control the rays from the front. We
:05:07. > :05:10.were talking to the team performance director looking very relaxed. She
:05:11. > :05:17.knows what she has to do tonight. I spoke to Stuart this morning and I
:05:18. > :05:21.was saying it was all about a fantastic Friday and he said, it is
:05:22. > :05:28.fighting Friday, so the gunners are out. She will get some confidence
:05:29. > :05:35.for the way she tackled her heat earlier in the week. Absolutely. It
:05:36. > :05:44.all seems very relaxed in training. Stewart says, all we do not want is
:05:45. > :05:49.bad luck. Jon Eley is up against Victor An of Russia. He is in the
:05:50. > :05:55.quarterfinal in the second lane. I think he should qualify quite
:05:56. > :06:00.comfortably. But the biggest thing is this crowd because when Victor An
:06:01. > :06:06.approaches the start line, the crowd goes crazy. It is his third Olympics
:06:07. > :06:13.and he is used to the big arena, so he should not have any problem
:06:14. > :06:18.whatsoever. We will be back here when it gets all underway.
:06:19. > :06:25.That was recorded a few moments ago, so the arena has filled up and
:06:26. > :06:30.there is Jon Eley. As you know it is one of the most unpredictable sports
:06:31. > :06:35.of them all with tight turns and needing a burst of speed stand the
:06:36. > :06:43.straight and people losing their balance and getting slightly edged
:06:44. > :06:47.and falling. In 2002 in Salt Lake City Steven Bradbury sat last in
:06:48. > :06:55.both the semifinal and he did the same thing in the final and even the
:06:56. > :07:00.great American skater was one of those who came crashing down and
:07:01. > :07:03.Steven Bradbury went for the medal. You could sit out at the back and
:07:04. > :07:09.hope things go wrong at the front, or you get up there into the
:07:10. > :07:15.argy-bargy. You have to change your tactics. We can head off to our
:07:16. > :07:27.commentary team, Wilf O'Reilly and Hugh Porter.
:07:28. > :07:37.We are looking at the Chinese skater. But we have a sneaky feeling
:07:38. > :07:51.we are going to hear more about that race. JR Chelski hit the side boys.
:07:52. > :07:58.And the Japanese skater went up in the air as if he was doing an
:07:59. > :08:02.acrobatic movement. I would not be surprised if he got advanced into
:08:03. > :08:13.the semifinal. Park changes his lane. He changes from the outside to
:08:14. > :08:21.the inside. You are absolutely right. The Korean has been
:08:22. > :08:33.penalised. JR Chelski, the American, has advanced. He joins the Chinese
:08:34. > :08:40.skater. We have got the line-up ready for the quarterfinal number
:08:41. > :08:45.three. It is the top two skaters who go through into the semifinal. We
:08:46. > :08:49.are looking for eight from these heats. But if there is an
:08:50. > :08:54.infringement or a skater has impeded another skater, it is reviewed by
:08:55. > :09:13.the referees and they get an advancement and that is what has
:09:14. > :09:20.just happened. At the back from Russia is Vladimir Grigorev. The
:09:21. > :09:25.Chinese skater finished fourth in the 1500 metres and is trying to
:09:26. > :09:44.make up for it in the shorter distance. The Canadian is lying
:09:45. > :10:02.second. It was the Chinese and the Canadian. The computer is saying
:10:03. > :10:11.that Cournoyer got it. But we will have to wait and see. The world
:10:12. > :10:16.record is held by Charles Hamlin. But the time is slightly irrelevant.
:10:17. > :10:27.The Chinese skater got off to a magnificent start. Vladimir Grigorev
:10:28. > :10:31.charged through and left the Canadian and the Chinese skater
:10:32. > :10:39.clear. It is a battle of the fittest. They were not in a
:10:40. > :10:45.qualifying position, so it will be interesting to see whether or not
:10:46. > :11:06.the referee advances him through to the next round. It was victory for
:11:07. > :11:19.the Chinese skater. Vladimir Grigorev was penalised. We have got
:11:20. > :11:27.one more quarterfinal to go. There is Jon Eley skating on the ice,
:11:28. > :11:34.getting himself ready, composing himself for the challenge ahead. He
:11:35. > :11:40.was a finalist in Torino. This is his best distance. The flag bearer
:11:41. > :11:47.for the British team at the opening ceremony. Inside him is the great
:11:48. > :11:53.Victor An who has got four gold medals to his credit and racing for
:11:54. > :12:03.Russia. He represented career before changing nationalities. Jon Eley
:12:04. > :12:15.holds his own. Tucked in on the pace of Victor An. Olivier Giroud of
:12:16. > :12:22.Canada has got some work to do. Come on, Jon Eley. You are really going.
:12:23. > :12:31.Or of a sudden Olivier Giroud has closed in on the coat-tails. Ride on
:12:32. > :12:44.the front is Victor An. Jon Eley is in second place. Oh, yes! Tremendous
:12:45. > :12:52.by Jon Eley. The 29-year-old skipper of the team. That was a superb skate
:12:53. > :12:59.from him. Very controlled. Victor An got the number one lane. He had to
:13:00. > :13:05.make sure there was no distance between them and he did exactly
:13:06. > :13:10.that. He must be absolutely delighted with that. He knew that
:13:11. > :13:19.Victor An was going to be the danger man. He was all over him like a
:13:20. > :13:24.rash. You can see him crouched behind Victor An. Jon Eley is almost
:13:25. > :13:32.six feet tall, but manages to get around the corners as swiftly and as
:13:33. > :13:36.technically well as Victor An. I said he would not be under any
:13:37. > :13:43.pressure, this is his third Olympic games and he showed his colours.
:13:44. > :13:48.Flag bearer. That is the kind of result we want to see. He is going
:13:49. > :14:08.into the the competition next on the night is
:14:09. > :14:38.the ladies. We will be welcoming onto the ice Elise Christie.
:14:39. > :14:45.Can Jon Eley replicate that in the next round? He should probably get
:14:46. > :14:55.lame position number two, judging on his time. That is what you want in a
:14:56. > :15:06.500 metres contest. There are no skaters on the ice at the moment. We
:15:07. > :15:09.are moving to the ladies. Elise Christie has been moved from
:15:10. > :15:17.quarterfinal number four 2/4-final number one. The good news about that
:15:18. > :15:21.is that originally, in number four, was a five up affair and she was
:15:22. > :15:30.skating against Jorien ter Mors. Pierron, and Drolet. Jorien ter Mors
:15:31. > :15:36.has been taken out. I think this will help Christie. She has had so
:15:37. > :15:41.much bad luck, crossing the line in silver medal position to have it
:15:42. > :15:47.taken away and in the 1500, she was first in the heat. But she finished
:15:48. > :15:52.just up the track and they said she did not complete the distance. How
:15:53. > :15:58.is she handling the pressure? It is great to see she will now only have
:15:59. > :16:05.four skaters. Her coach will have decided the strategy with her. It is
:16:06. > :16:10.business as usual. This is her favourite distance. She does not
:16:11. > :16:16.need to panic. It is business as usual. We will monitor that with
:16:17. > :16:22.interest and see whether that will favour her. She has got to keep an
:16:23. > :16:35.eye on the opposition she is facing, because she has the 21-year-old who
:16:36. > :16:45.got two bronze medals in Vancouver. Seung-Hi Park. That is likely to be
:16:46. > :16:53.her big challenger. The 23-year-old from Livingston in Scotland, racing
:16:54. > :16:58.out of Nottingham on the ice. No doubt going through her mind how she
:16:59. > :17:03.will race this. I saw the coach giving her the sign, staying
:17:04. > :17:11.relaxed. The GB team are up at the moment. Elise Christie is just
:17:12. > :17:18.waiting for the whistle. Christie is racing from position number one. I
:17:19. > :17:26.am not sure she will want to stay in that position. If the race is not
:17:27. > :17:33.very fast, it will probably be the best place. All of them liked to
:17:34. > :17:40.lead from the front. On the right, racing from the inside position,
:17:41. > :17:52.Elise Christie. Drolet of Canada and then... We have a. To. Nerves are
:17:53. > :18:05.going to play a part. I think it was Marie-Eve Drolet of Canada. In fact,
:18:06. > :18:15.it was Seung-Hi Park. She will be told by the referee. It is we have a
:18:16. > :18:32.second start. If the skater has two, if, for
:18:33. > :18:35.example, Seung-Hi Park is awarded the second Falstaff 's... And I
:18:36. > :18:46.think that might have been... It could have been -- false start. It
:18:47. > :18:54.means the race now has two. It is not allowed any more. If there was a
:18:55. > :19:00.third, you could be out. I am sure Elise Christie knows about that.
:19:01. > :19:05.This might be a tentative start but we are OK this time. Elise Christie
:19:06. > :19:11.almost got knocked over. She collided immediately. That was with
:19:12. > :19:16.Drolet of Canada. I am really pleased she stayed upright. It was
:19:17. > :19:23.dangerous. They like to skate from the front. Pierron of France is
:19:24. > :19:30.trying to get around the outside and Christie is staying out of trouble
:19:31. > :19:40.at the back, but she will need to start before the pace increases. We
:19:41. > :19:44.saw her electric pace when she accelerated from the back past the
:19:45. > :19:54.field in the heat. She established a fantastic window advantage. Of
:19:55. > :20:00.course, this competition is stiff. Seung-Hi Park takes over the
:20:01. > :20:10.pacesetting. Elise Christie must try to make a move and come around the
:20:11. > :20:14.outside. She is gathering herself. Trying to pick up the pace but she
:20:15. > :20:21.does not seem to have the acceleration. Having said that, she
:20:22. > :20:26.is on the outside with a lot of work to do. Christie, right into second
:20:27. > :20:35.place. Pierron sweeps into the boards and into the finishing
:20:36. > :20:43.straight. Well, it she skated that with style. She left it very late, I
:20:44. > :20:51.must admit. We will have to wait to see what the official result is not
:20:52. > :21:00.coming around the outside, it was superb. I was worried but she made
:21:01. > :21:04.the move. All of them like to skate from the front. You saw
:21:05. > :21:12.immediately, even though she had to be number one lane, there was a
:21:13. > :21:17.challenge in the first bend. Pierron of France, just moving to the front.
:21:18. > :21:24.It will be interesting to see, Christie came around the outside,
:21:25. > :21:31.clearly not in any trouble. She had so much speed she even went past
:21:32. > :21:37.Seung-Hi Park with half a lap to go. That was reminiscent of ice dancing
:21:38. > :21:46.for the French skater. Will she be advanced? Do you think she is out? I
:21:47. > :21:53.think Pierron could be out. You have to be in a qualifying position.
:21:54. > :21:59.There is a decision now. I would be interested to see the official
:22:00. > :22:03.result. I think we can draw from that the fact Christie has put the
:22:04. > :22:09.disappointment of the two events behind her and I think that was a
:22:10. > :22:14.display of confidence. She even got around Seung-Hi Park, that must
:22:15. > :22:18.bolster her confidence. This is the result confirmed. There was a
:22:19. > :22:29.penalty for the French skater. Drolet not making it through. Three
:22:30. > :22:34.more quarterfinals to go. On the extreme left, we are looking at the
:22:35. > :22:40.Dutch skater, Jorien ter Mors. She skated earlier this evening in the
:22:41. > :22:42.team pursuit, in the Dutch team that set an Olympic record. She is going
:22:43. > :22:58.to be stretched. Jorien ter Mors is the European
:22:59. > :23:06.champion, fourth at the moment, in the orange. Valerie Maltais set a
:23:07. > :23:07.new record in her heat. She is comfortable leading from the
:23:08. > :23:23.beginning. Jorien ter Mors retired and she has
:23:24. > :23:31.made a successful comeback, dictating the terms at the front.
:23:32. > :23:42.Waiting to make a move is the Japanese skater. Valerie Maltais is
:23:43. > :23:47.still leading. Yui Sakai in second. Something will have to happen
:23:48. > :23:51.shortly. Jorien ter Mors might be carrying fatigue from the team
:23:52. > :23:57.pursuit qualification earlier. Having said that, she made the move
:23:58. > :24:02.tarp into almost third place. Does she have the power to challenge the
:24:03. > :24:08.Japanese skater and qualify? It is the first two who will go into the
:24:09. > :24:12.semifinals. Jorien ter Mors hack to come along way around and she is
:24:13. > :24:22.going to do it, taking second to through into the semifinals. Valerie
:24:23. > :24:26.Maltais wins. These 1000 meters are becoming an elongated sprint with
:24:27. > :24:33.the skaters taking off immediately from the start at it is a battle to
:24:34. > :24:35.find your way around. Valerie Maltais controls the race from the
:24:36. > :25:00.beginning. 1.29 one one. You can see the left arm crossing. I
:25:01. > :25:11.do not think there is any major infringement. It will probably be
:25:12. > :25:17.Valerie Maltais will qualify. Jorien ter Mors will probably go through as
:25:18. > :25:23.well. She already has one goal medal, Jorien ter Mors, and that
:25:24. > :25:28.came on the long track when she won the 1500 metres at the expense of
:25:29. > :25:34.Ireen Wust. The talent of this woman, to my knowledge no skater has
:25:35. > :25:47.won a medal in long track and short track in any Olympics. We are into
:25:48. > :26:07.quarterfinal number three. 70 years of age, subtly
:26:08. > :26:15.Fontana has won a silver and two bronze medals. Such an experienced
:26:16. > :26:26.campaigner is the Italian. She is skating well. Controlling the race
:26:27. > :26:32.from the front, not making mistakes. She does not want to leave
:26:33. > :26:37.it too late. Emily Scott at the back needs to make a move. Fontana has
:26:38. > :26:51.three medals already from these games and she looks comfortable.
:26:52. > :26:57.Shim, 17 years of age and the winner of the World Cup competition. Her
:26:58. > :27:09.age belies her power, determination and strength. The young Chinese
:27:10. > :27:20.skater is trying to get around. Fontana hanging onto second place. A
:27:21. > :27:33.terrific move by Kexin Fan. She slid right out.
:27:34. > :27:46.Challenging and almost sliding over the line. I think there will be a
:27:47. > :27:51.call on that. Fontana was taken down by the Chinese skater. It will be
:27:52. > :27:57.interesting how they will call it because I felt what happened was
:27:58. > :28:01.what happened to Elise Christie in the 500 metres. Christie came up the
:28:02. > :28:12.inside and Fontana moves to the left. Maybe we can see it here.
:28:13. > :28:24.Shim, she was controlling the race comfortably. She is clearly in
:28:25. > :28:28.front. It is exactly the same as what Elise Christie had. Fontana
:28:29. > :28:33.leaning over and barging over and, of course, losing her balance. It
:28:34. > :28:39.could mean Emily Scott will make it as second. That would probably mean
:28:40. > :28:56.Fontana would be advanced to the semifinals. The Chinese skater could
:28:57. > :29:01.receive a penalty. We are anxiously waiting to see what will be the
:29:02. > :29:08.outcome of the deliberations by the referees. I should think they are
:29:09. > :29:15.not the most popular of people by the end of the evening. The
:29:16. > :29:19.right-hand on Fontana's shoulder. She does that because Fontana is
:29:20. > :29:23.coming back in onto the track and that is exactly what happened with
:29:24. > :29:34.Elise Christie. She was in front at that time. Some of these decisions,
:29:35. > :29:38.the gaps are miniscule. It must be a marginal offence that they
:29:39. > :29:43.eventually penalised somebody. Everybody is looking up at the
:29:44. > :30:07.scoreboard in the middle of the arena. Arianna Fontana has been
:30:08. > :30:17.penalised. We have one more quarterfinal in the ladies 1000
:30:18. > :30:26.metres. Racing from the inside is Jianrou Li. Alang Kim from Korea and
:30:27. > :30:32.the Polish skater, Patrycja Maliszewska. Immediately the Chinese
:30:33. > :30:39.skater once Frank position, but she has lost it and there is a change
:30:40. > :30:44.right on the head of the contest. It is Jessica Smith from the USA, but
:30:45. > :30:53.being challenged immediately by Alang Kim. Jessica Smith is really
:30:54. > :30:57.controlling this race. It is excellent skating from the American.
:30:58. > :31:08.The Americans having a disappointing Olympic games. Jianrou Li is second
:31:09. > :31:13.and came from Korea is third. Jessica Smith is 30 years of age and
:31:14. > :31:17.she is obviously brimming over with confidence and quite happy to keep
:31:18. > :31:25.turning the screw and holding the rest at bay. But is she going to run
:31:26. > :31:29.out of her stamina and power? Lurking behind her is Jianrou Li.
:31:30. > :31:38.She has already got a gold medal from Sochi and that came on day one.
:31:39. > :31:45.That was from the 500 metres. Still at the front is Jessica Smith the
:31:46. > :32:02.American. The challenge is likely to come from GM rudely. That is on the
:32:03. > :32:09.line. It will be interesting. On the line it was came from Korea. I think
:32:10. > :32:13.Jianrou Li was surprised to see the appearance of the Korean. She
:32:14. > :32:32.beautifully timed the acceleration going to the line. We will have to
:32:33. > :32:37.wait for the official photo finish. This was the action that was trying
:32:38. > :32:43.to deny Smith the lead. Kim trying to get round. But she could not get
:32:44. > :32:49.round Smith who was taking the shortest route on the inside. But
:32:50. > :32:56.then the challenge came from Jianrou Li. But this surprised the Chinese
:32:57. > :33:03.skater and I am wondering if it has cost her a place to go through.
:33:04. > :33:14.Smith is OK, but the Korean suddenly appeared on the screen. Jianrou Li
:33:15. > :33:23.is OK. Providing that result stands, it will mean Jessica Smith is joined
:33:24. > :33:29.by Jianrou Li who is in search for her second medal in Sochi, having
:33:30. > :33:36.got the gold medal in the 500. I must admit the Chinese are skating
:33:37. > :33:44.very well here. We confirmed the qualifiers into the semifinals. We
:33:45. > :33:51.wait for the referees to rejig them in their respective semi finals. But
:33:52. > :33:57.good news, Elise Christie is through comfortably. We have got Jon Eley
:33:58. > :34:02.and Elise Christie progressing into the semifinals.
:34:03. > :34:12.If you think Elise Christie moves fast, look how quickly will owe
:34:13. > :34:19.Riley has moved. That Wilf O'Reilly. It was very nerve wracking. But what
:34:20. > :34:24.did you make of her tactics tonight? It was very controlled. On the first
:34:25. > :34:30.corner she almost got knocked over. She composed herself and she relaxed
:34:31. > :34:34.and came from the back and was very controlled on the outside. I thought
:34:35. > :34:40.she might have left it a bit too late, but showing extreme control
:34:41. > :34:44.and an extremely good performance. From where you were when she hit
:34:45. > :34:55.that first bend, did you think she was gone? She kind of backs off and
:34:56. > :35:00.then she starts to relax. She leaves a little bit of a gap and she goes
:35:01. > :35:07.around side the French girl and she stays there quite superbly and uses
:35:08. > :35:11.the edges on her blades really well. Then she came back in and she stayed
:35:12. > :35:20.on the outside. She kept out of trouble. And then there was a crash
:35:21. > :35:26.and she could have come back inside behind Park, but she kept on the
:35:27. > :35:32.inside. Very similar to the tactic she used in the heat. That is what
:35:33. > :35:40.the technical team have worked on before the race. Absolutely. The
:35:41. > :35:46.racing is getting so that the gaps are moving tighter and tighter.
:35:47. > :35:50.Going into the semifinals there was the salute with the one finger and
:35:51. > :35:55.she is getting into the race and she has not had that many races until
:35:56. > :36:01.now. Her confidence will be building and after seeing Jon Eley, which was
:36:02. > :36:06.amazing getting into the semifinal, I think Team GB will be up with a
:36:07. > :36:14.fantastic Friday. I have been talking to Jon Eley and he is the GB
:36:15. > :36:19.flag bearer and he seems to me that he is growing in confidence as the
:36:20. > :36:24.competition continues. Absolutely, it is his third games and there is
:36:25. > :36:33.no pressure on him whatsoever. He had the perfect race, with Olivier
:36:34. > :36:39.Giroud making a bit of a mistake and Jon Eley capitalised on that mistake
:36:40. > :36:44.and qualified very comfortably. Just when he finishes there is a fist
:36:45. > :36:49.pump to the crowd. And we have to tell the viewers there is a
:36:50. > :36:54.considerable gathering of Team GB viewers tonight and they have come
:36:55. > :37:00.to support them. You will see it as he crosses the line. That shows an
:37:01. > :37:05.athlete at the top of his game. I said this morning he could get
:37:06. > :37:10.through to the semifinal and it is the top eight skaters in the world.
:37:11. > :37:18.Maybe he can come away with a medal at his third Olympics. But the one
:37:19. > :37:25.thing that worries me is he is up against the Russian. The Korean now
:37:26. > :37:30.compete for Russia and when he comes on the place goes crazy. When you
:37:31. > :37:36.are on the start line whether there are 12,000 people here, you do not
:37:37. > :37:44.hear anything, you do not even hear your coach. You are so in the zone
:37:45. > :37:49.in the race, I am sure it will not put him off whatsoever. What is
:37:50. > :37:55.going through their minds right now? What either technical team saying to
:37:56. > :37:59.them? Both of them will go back and they will sharpen their skates and
:38:00. > :38:04.go on the exercise bikes and keep their legs very loose and recover
:38:05. > :38:12.and relax. Maybe listen to some music. It is all about recovering
:38:13. > :38:21.and relaxing and not panicking. The semifinals. Elise Christie is up
:38:22. > :38:28.against the brightest new hope, will that affect? No, because she has
:38:29. > :38:33.just beaten her skating partner in Korea and she went on the outside of
:38:34. > :38:38.her as well. This girl is not afraid of anybody. I spoke to Stuart this
:38:39. > :38:44.morning and he said it was fighting Friday and that is what she is out
:38:45. > :38:48.to do. And you do not see anything in her body language which suggests
:38:49. > :38:55.the controversy she has been through? Not at all. I have already
:38:56. > :39:00.said it is a roller-coaster sport and we are used to disappointment
:39:01. > :39:03.and she came back in the European Championships and at the world
:39:04. > :39:10.championships last year and I think she is at the peak performance of
:39:11. > :39:14.her life. We are still on for medals, fingers crossed, Jon Eley
:39:15. > :39:19.and Elise Christie both through to semifinals.
:39:20. > :39:27.I know everybody at home is absolutely loving this. It combines
:39:28. > :39:32.so many skills. You have to have power and pace on the start block,
:39:33. > :39:37.you have to have power and pace and great balance. When they leaned down
:39:38. > :39:42.on the inside you have to have incredible stomach muscles. You have
:39:43. > :39:48.got to be strong enough to hold your own and stay on your feet and then
:39:49. > :39:53.know when to get aggressive again. It will be so intense tonight
:39:54. > :39:57.because it is not a case of the semifinals tomorrow and the finals
:39:58. > :40:02.of the next day, it all happens this evening in the space of one hour. We
:40:03. > :40:07.will find out if they can make it through to the finals of their
:40:08. > :40:12.respective races. You have also got to be able to take the bruises as
:40:13. > :40:18.well. Elise Christie looking very strong. Jon Eley is a very different
:40:19. > :40:25.build. He is over six feet and yet he has an elegance on the ice and he
:40:26. > :40:28.is looking very smooth. I know how much people at home would love Elise
:40:29. > :40:33.Christie to finish this Winter Olympics on a positive note. If you
:40:34. > :40:38.are watching and you do not understand the advancements and the
:40:39. > :40:47.penalties, here is a guide to the riskiest sport of all. Short track
:40:48. > :40:54.speed skating is a race against each other and not the clock. It is a
:40:55. > :40:58.knockout format with skaters tearing around the 111 metres oval track
:40:59. > :41:03.anticlockwise at speeds of up to 40 miles an hour in the hope of beating
:41:04. > :41:08.their opponents and progressing into the next round. Tactics play a big
:41:09. > :41:19.part with competitors often happy to track the leader and then produce a
:41:20. > :41:22.late charge to the line. But a bunch of skaters vying for positions at
:41:23. > :41:32.high speed means crashes are frequent. Short track specialist
:41:33. > :41:44.Apollo Ono has won eight medals in this event including two golds.
:41:45. > :41:49.Apollo Ono is here as part of the NBC team and I know Wilf O'Reilly
:41:50. > :41:56.has been catching up with a lot of the short speed skaters. It was on
:41:57. > :41:59.Saturday night and they all still love the sport. Steven Bradbury is
:42:00. > :42:04.here helping coach the Australians and working for Channel ten. What do
:42:05. > :42:22.you think of the standard of short track speed skating now compared to
:42:23. > :42:29.when you were racing? The standard is a lot higher. The girls in the
:42:30. > :42:34.500 metres are going quicker than how I went in Calgary. The equipment
:42:35. > :42:44.has improved, but there is no comparison whatsoever. We can see
:42:45. > :42:51.the skaters warming up now and getting their muscles ready for the
:42:52. > :42:56.semifinals. Is it the top two, plus any others who may have been knocked
:42:57. > :43:01.out of the way and get advance? It is the top two, but we have the
:43:02. > :43:06.strange anomaly, if there is a problem along the way, somebody has
:43:07. > :43:11.pushed somebody and it stops somebody who looked as if they were
:43:12. > :43:15.going to be part of the qualifying contingent, then the referees will
:43:16. > :43:24.review it and look at the computer and give a decision. The actual rule
:43:25. > :43:27.says the top two go into the final. Watching from the sidelines is Nicky
:43:28. > :43:35.Gooch, the coach to the women's team. Stewart in the purple coloured
:43:36. > :43:40.jumper has done a great job of getting Elise Christie back on the
:43:41. > :43:44.track and he put forward Jon Eley to carry the flag and he is confident
:43:45. > :43:48.this is the best British short skating team there has ever been at
:43:49. > :43:54.an Olympics and they are feeding off the confidence of each other.
:43:55. > :43:59.Whatever happens tonight, they have put on star performances to have two
:44:00. > :44:04.in the semifinals and with realistic chances of getting into the finals.
:44:05. > :44:09.It is a great credit to the organisation of British short track.
:44:10. > :44:17.We will hand you back to Hugh and Wilf O'Reilly.
:44:18. > :44:25.The skaters getting ready for the challenge ahead. That is of course
:44:26. > :44:30.to get into an Olympic final. The first semifinal brings five skaters
:44:31. > :44:34.together because JR Celski has been advanced, because in the
:44:35. > :44:38.quarterfinal he went spinning out and the referees decided, after
:44:39. > :44:50.scrutinising the computer, he had been denied a chance when he was in
:44:51. > :45:03.a position to challenge. Wu. He is racing from position one. Cournoyer
:45:04. > :45:08.from Canada, and then Tianyu Han and JR Celski and Satoshi Sakashita. It
:45:09. > :45:21.is a tradition at this stage of the competition that they are announced
:45:22. > :45:31.to the crowd. Cournoyer, a rookie Olympian, I have not seen much of
:45:32. > :45:41.him, but he is skating well. The Chinese are going well. Tianyu Han.
:45:42. > :45:45.JR Celski. He is a popular skater. He has a lot of pace, sometimes it
:45:46. > :46:00.runs away with him and he gets himself into trouble. And Satoshi
:46:01. > :46:10.Sakashita from Japan. He is the oldest at 24 and the youngest is
:46:11. > :46:15.Han. They are called to the start. This is when the referee makes sure
:46:16. > :46:31.the crowd are totally quiet. Who was that? I think it was Satoshi
:46:32. > :46:35.Sakashita. Either him or JR Celski. The skaters on the outside have
:46:36. > :46:48.furthest to go to the first block and might try to take advantage of a
:46:49. > :46:56.possible false start. It was the Japanese skater on the outside. And
:46:57. > :47:02.we are away this time. It is four and a half laps. The full house is
:47:03. > :47:11.loving every moment of the competition. China in charge. Wu,
:47:12. > :47:26.and his fellow countrymen. . That was a great pass on the inside
:47:27. > :47:38.by Cournoyer of Canada. He is skating out of his skin. Victory on
:47:39. > :47:46.the line. Wu. And also the Canadian, who really skated well. He
:47:47. > :47:51.certainly did. I thought the Chinese might have gone for some team
:47:52. > :47:56.skating. We saw JR Celski out of the picture, disappointment for him.
:47:57. > :48:00.That will mean no individual medal outside of the relay. The Chinese
:48:01. > :48:07.skaters are flying off the starting line. It does not matter what
:48:08. > :48:12.position they are in, one and two quite comfortably. The Canadian
:48:13. > :48:23.sneaked through on the inside. The Chinese coach. That was the
:48:24. > :48:29.incident. It was a superb move, coming on the inside. Blocking the
:48:30. > :48:34.final bend. Leaving no room. I do not think there will be any major
:48:35. > :48:44.incident. The head referee is looking at the video replay. It is
:48:45. > :48:50.still being scrutinised but Wu, he was fourth in the 1000, just shy of
:48:51. > :49:08.the podium, but he showed what a skater he is there. The public
:49:09. > :49:13.announcement is saying it stands. We know two who will be slugging it out
:49:14. > :49:20.for the medals. Now we can wait to see if Jon Eley can get into his
:49:21. > :49:25.second Olympic final. There he is, such an experienced competitor. He
:49:26. > :49:30.was in the medal rush in Torino. He did not make it to the podium, but
:49:31. > :49:38.he is in good form and this is his favourite distance. Victor An, the
:49:39. > :49:42.fastest qualifier from the previous race. That is the advantage, when
:49:43. > :49:51.you are fastest, you get lame position number one. Jon Eley is
:49:52. > :49:58.being announced to the crowd. Victor An, before he switched to be a
:49:59. > :50:17.Russian, he got a bronze medal in this event. Jon Eley chase down
:50:18. > :50:22.Victor An. Sjinkie Knegt has won a bronze medal here and that inspired
:50:23. > :50:33.him, in the 1000 metres, completing semifinal number two is Wenhao Liang
:50:34. > :50:41.of China. He skated in Vancouver but did not win a medal in the single
:50:42. > :50:47.events and another false start. Nerves are beginning to play a part.
:50:48. > :50:53.I think it might have been Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands. It could
:50:54. > :51:01.be Liang, of China, or possibly even both. More than one can get this.
:51:02. > :51:08.One skater is allowed one false start. If it is a second time, they
:51:09. > :51:18.have two leave the ice. Sjinkie Knegt got it.
:51:19. > :51:24.Jon Eley the oldest man in the contest is beaten to the second
:51:25. > :51:39.position. You can see how important it is to get the initial spread out
:51:40. > :51:47.of the way. Come on, Jon Eley, . Look at this. Victor An goes down
:51:48. > :51:50.the inside. What a skater he is. Sjinkie Knegt has gone into third
:51:51. > :52:04.and Jon Eley is back in fourth. Victor An, who has got one gold
:52:05. > :52:09.medal and a bronze. Jon Eley having to settle for fourth. Unbelievable,
:52:10. > :52:16.the Russian, he must be the greatest short track skater of all time. I
:52:17. > :52:21.think he is the highest ranked medal mail ever. Disappointment for Jon
:52:22. > :52:30.Eley. He made a mistake at the moment when he was probably going to
:52:31. > :52:34.go through. The Chinese, they have their timing and start position, it
:52:35. > :52:43.does not matter what position they are in. Victor An came from second
:52:44. > :52:48.into first, making it look so easy. That was a stunning display of speed
:52:49. > :53:01.and confidence by Victor An, putting him into the gold medal final. Jon
:53:02. > :53:07.Eley will be in the B final, where they classify the competitors from
:53:08. > :53:13.fifth position onwards. He was in distinguished company and he rose to
:53:14. > :53:29.the challenge. Jon Eley will skate again. He was also BB finalist in
:53:30. > :53:49.Vancouver. These are the warriors who will slug it out -- B. It is
:53:50. > :53:52.unbelievable stuff. Jon Eley will not be disappointed with that
:53:53. > :53:56.performance. He would've liked to have got into the final because then
:53:57. > :54:04.anything can happen, but he did justice. The fact that he carried
:54:05. > :54:10.the flag for the country inspired him. He has been a faithful servant
:54:11. > :54:14.of short track skating. And he is a three-time Olympian. B He will be
:54:15. > :54:42.skating in the final. -- B final. This is the composition of the first
:54:43. > :54:45.semifinal. Jorien ter Mors has come here from setting an Olympic record
:54:46. > :54:51.for the team pursuit and so her recovery power has been stretched to
:54:52. > :54:55.the limit. The first to be introduced is Valerie Maltais from
:54:56. > :55:07.Canada, racing from position number one. Jorien ter Mors alongside her,
:55:08. > :55:16.the European champion. And the 21-year-old, Seung-Hi Park. While
:55:17. > :55:25.champion five times. Her brother is competed also competing here.
:55:26. > :55:44.Jessica Smith skated positively in the heats. And the call to the line.
:55:45. > :55:53.They have nine laps of the arena. Valerie Maltais gets the sharp end.
:55:54. > :55:57.She led the last race from the front. It will be interesting
:55:58. > :56:10.whether Seung-Hi Park in second place will try to knock her of her
:56:11. > :56:13.race plan. There are no charitable hand-outs at this stage of the
:56:14. > :56:25.competition. They are attacking this with passion. There is work to do
:56:26. > :56:39.for Jessica Smith and Jorien ter Mors. Four laps to go and the pace
:56:40. > :56:44.will be lifted. Seung-Hi Park, the 21-year-old. An incredible history
:56:45. > :56:52.in short track speed skating. Maltais is in second and a move by
:56:53. > :56:59.Smith. Jorien ter Mors will have to find something, she is running out
:57:00. > :57:09.of distance, at the back. At the front, with conviction is Seung-Hi
:57:10. > :57:17.Park. Maltais has gone down, can you believe it? Second over the line was
:57:18. > :57:24.Jessica Smith. A Christmas present, gift wrapped, because Maltais slid
:57:25. > :57:31.out. Jessica Smith must have thought, I cannot believe it, I will
:57:32. > :57:34.be in an Olympic final. It is about staying on your feet and
:57:35. > :57:40.particularly at the last lap, Maltais must have been tired, she
:57:41. > :57:48.had led from the front. She tried to go around the outside. Seung-Hi Park
:57:49. > :57:57.came through to take it on. The Canadians have had a disastrous
:57:58. > :58:05.Olympics. You could see the left skate sliding through. Just going
:58:06. > :58:10.down. It was a Christmas gift for Jessica Smith, of America, who will
:58:11. > :58:16.qualify. The only American who has made an individual final. We will
:58:17. > :58:27.look at it, Jorien ter Mors did not challenge. It looked as though
:58:28. > :58:40.Maltais would make it. But she does not. Seung-Hi Park and Smith will be
:58:41. > :58:51.a to rest. And now, Elise Christie. She won the European title for the
:58:52. > :58:56.1000. That was in Germany. She has got position number three. She has
:58:57. > :59:03.nine laps to sort it out. From what I have seen, the power and
:59:04. > :59:16.acceleration, she seems to be able to move through when required. The
:59:17. > :59:29.first to be announced, Shim. And then Fan from China. And then Elise
:59:30. > :59:39.Christie. There is no legacy of disappointments reflected here. She
:59:40. > :59:45.has dismissed it from her mind. And the second Chinese skater, Li. She
:59:46. > :59:55.has one gold medal in her pocket when she won the 500 metres. The
:59:56. > :00:12.young Korean on the inside is only 17 years of age. Talk us through
:00:13. > :00:15.that. That was Fan Kexin of China. Interesting to see that these
:00:16. > :00:22.Chinese skaters do not do a bit of teams skating, it is officially not
:00:23. > :00:30.allowed. Korea has already got one into the final. Shim Suk Hee is
:00:31. > :00:41.trying to join her. Jessica Smith is the other qualifier. We are away
:00:42. > :00:48.this time. The referee is happy with that. Immediately going to the front
:00:49. > :00:57.is Fan Kexin. The Chinese are at the book ends at the moment. And Jianrou
:00:58. > :01:03.Li of China is coming around the outside. Shim Suk Hee not allowing
:01:04. > :01:13.that to happen. Elise Christie is comfortably at the back. You have to
:01:14. > :01:18.sit in that position when you are amongst this group. Absolutely. She
:01:19. > :01:23.could be waiting for the exploration, the explosion, but she
:01:24. > :01:32.is leaving it very late with five laps to go. Come on, Braveheart,
:01:33. > :01:37.start to think about making a move. It is the young Korean leading the
:01:38. > :01:43.two Chinese. When is Elise Christie going to make her move? The
:01:44. > :01:49.Livingston express. Come on, you need to make a move. She is slightly
:01:50. > :01:55.distant, or has she gathered herself for a run. Here comes Elise Christie
:01:56. > :02:04.with the long run down the outside. She is up to third. She has found a
:02:05. > :02:09.fantastic line on the inside. But the Chinese skater has challenged
:02:10. > :02:17.her again. She falls and takes Christie out as well. The first
:02:18. > :02:23.place goes to Shim Suk Hee. But I think Christie will be advanced. I
:02:24. > :02:27.would like to see that again. She was certainly in a qualifying
:02:28. > :02:35.position and yet again it is turmoil for Christie. Going into that last
:02:36. > :02:42.bend Jianrou Li of China I think possibly will receive a penalty. I
:02:43. > :02:47.think that is a clear-cut case of being advanced. I would be very
:02:48. > :02:57.surprised if Christie does not get advance. Take a look at the images.
:02:58. > :03:00.Fan Kexin came through from the front and split the Chinese girls,
:03:01. > :03:06.making sure they were not going to control the race. Christie is out of
:03:07. > :03:13.the screen at the moment and she left it very late indeed. Shim Suk
:03:14. > :03:20.Hee almost went down there. This is where Christie makes her challenge
:03:21. > :03:29.on the outside. There was no room and Christie came around the
:03:30. > :03:34.outside. Absolutely no way at all that she should get through. I am
:03:35. > :03:45.going to make a prediction she will be advanced in the final. The gold
:03:46. > :03:49.winner from day one was spinning and Christie was involved in that
:03:50. > :03:54.incident. A very difficult call indeed. The skater has to be in
:03:55. > :04:01.front and they were both parallel going into that bend. She has been
:04:02. > :04:07.the victim of calls that have cost her so far. On day one in the silver
:04:08. > :04:12.medal position in the first event only to be penalised and placed
:04:13. > :04:17.fourth. And then with an incredible injection of power in the heats of
:04:18. > :04:25.the 1500 she won by a country mile, but when they looked at it she
:04:26. > :04:30.passed on the inside. The referee is still looking at the race review.
:04:31. > :04:35.They have cameras that we cannot see. They have other camera
:04:36. > :04:39.positions that are not allowed to be viewed by anybody other than the
:04:40. > :04:48.referees. What is your feeling on this? If she does not get advanced
:04:49. > :04:56.here, she is clearly in front. She is taken out on that last turn. I
:04:57. > :05:01.think she caught her. I do not think she caught her, it was a huge fall,
:05:02. > :05:12.but we have to wait for the official result. I must admit since she came
:05:13. > :05:16.on the ice she has been shining like a beacon. She definitely ought to
:05:17. > :05:27.get advanced from that. We have seen the replays. Wilf O'Reilly feels
:05:28. > :05:34.Christie should be advanced. Fan Kexin and Shim Suk Hee... We are
:05:35. > :05:41.seeing two penalties. I cannot believe it. Jianrou Li has been
:05:42. > :05:47.penalised and so has Elise Christie and she is not going to advance into
:05:48. > :05:51.the medal contest. In fact Shim Suk Hee and Fan Kexin are in that
:05:52. > :05:59.contest. I find that absolutely bewildering. She will not even raise
:06:00. > :06:05.in the B final. Nicky Gooch is calling the referee over and saying,
:06:06. > :06:14.what is going on? What is going on? I have no idea. If you do not know
:06:15. > :06:21.what is going on... Clearly she was in a qualifying position going into
:06:22. > :06:26.the last corner. The Sochi Olympics have been very unfavourable to Elise
:06:27. > :06:32.Christie. Only two skaters will be lining up for the B final.
:06:33. > :06:40.Absolutely because two skaters have received a penalty in the semifinal.
:06:41. > :06:56.And there is no appeal, is that? Not at all. These four will contest the
:06:57. > :07:03.medals. I find it totally bewildering, I cannot understand it.
:07:04. > :07:11.She was clearly in my opinion up ended by the skater that was
:07:12. > :07:20.spinning around. Let's take another look at the images. On the front we
:07:21. > :07:25.have got images of the men's contest that took place a little bit
:07:26. > :07:30.earlier. It is so disappointing. There certainly will not be any
:07:31. > :07:36.charitable hand-outs, but I do not think it would have been charity if
:07:37. > :07:42.Christie had advanced. I cannot see anything that she had done wrong.
:07:43. > :07:56.She was up ended and spun out of the contest purely because of the clash
:07:57. > :08:01.with the Chinese. Watching this from outside like
:08:02. > :08:05.everybody at home we are utterly shocked and it is huge
:08:06. > :08:09.disappointment for Elise Christie. After everything she has been
:08:10. > :08:16.through and the quality skater she is she clearly deserved more. Hugh
:08:17. > :08:20.and Wilf, can you clarify the rules as they stand? I do referees making
:08:21. > :08:29.the assumption they were level and it was 50-50 and they penalised both
:08:30. > :08:33.skaters? I would think that is the path they have gone down, I think
:08:34. > :08:39.Wilf is more qualified to answer that. I cannot see how they could
:08:40. > :08:43.have judged it any other way. Christie was clearly in a
:08:44. > :08:49.challenging position to go into the medal contest. But because of that
:08:50. > :08:55.she has been penalised. I am almost speechless. It is just astonishing
:08:56. > :09:04.to me. Absolutely amazing. You were saying there is no channel of
:09:05. > :09:08.appeal? No channel of appeal at all. I do not know whether that was one
:09:09. > :09:12.of the cases a few years ago and they took it out because of the time
:09:13. > :09:17.it would take for appeals and they would have to be reviewed and
:09:18. > :09:22.considered. There were reviews and appeals in cycling, but that took so
:09:23. > :09:27.much time because of appeals and counter appeals, so there is no
:09:28. > :09:33.appeal. This is the first of the semifinals. Jessica Smith had a gift
:09:34. > :09:40.wrapped invitation when the Canadian skater ahead of how went out. We are
:09:41. > :09:45.going to take another look at Christie's race. You can see already
:09:46. > :09:51.the way the contest is developing with five laps to go. Christie is at
:09:52. > :09:55.the back brimming over with confidence and she is looking to
:09:56. > :10:00.make the pass on the outside, so that underlies how fast and strong
:10:01. > :10:05.she was feeling. She starts to make the move and you have got to have an
:10:06. > :10:11.incredible amount of pace and power to do that when you have got three
:10:12. > :10:16.ahead turning the screw. But it did not deter her at all. It was that
:10:17. > :10:21.move where she began to get involved in the contest. She found her way
:10:22. > :10:25.into third position and was looking for the line underneath. She went
:10:26. > :10:30.cleanly into second place but the Chinese skater decided she wanted to
:10:31. > :10:37.get underneath. From that shot you can see clearly the Chinese skater
:10:38. > :10:43.actually spun and it looked to me it was absolutely obvious that she had
:10:44. > :10:47.pushed Christie out of the contest. To give that decision she had been
:10:48. > :10:54.penalised, how could she be penalised by that? She was taken out
:10:55. > :10:58.clearly by the Chinese skater trying to reassert her position on the
:10:59. > :11:02.inside having lost it when Christie had gone through the finishing
:11:03. > :11:40.straight and made her way on the outside. I am absolutely mesmerised.
:11:41. > :11:59.Wilf is with me. I think it is a very disappointing decision by the
:12:00. > :12:03.referee. Both skaters going into the last corner and it could have gone
:12:04. > :12:10.either way, but certainly one of them was at fault and in my opinion
:12:11. > :12:15.it was the Chinese girl, Jianrou Li. Absolute disappointment for Elise
:12:16. > :12:20.Christie. We have seen the replay again and it looks very much as
:12:21. > :12:25.though Jianrou Li who clearly lost second position in the final lap was
:12:26. > :12:33.so upset by that she tried to reassert herself. When she did, you
:12:34. > :12:41.will see that she then to me spins and takes Christie out. That is what
:12:42. > :12:49.the problem was. We do not know why the penalty on both skaters came
:12:50. > :12:55.about. We do not know why it came about? Clearly Elise Christie was
:12:56. > :13:00.coming on the outside and had more speed and was crossing over into the
:13:01. > :13:06.turn and is taken out by the Chinese skater. But the pivotal moment was
:13:07. > :13:12.when she got into that second position and the Chinese skater,
:13:13. > :13:17.Jianrou Li, was so fired up by it, she tried to reassert herself in
:13:18. > :13:23.second and there was nowhere to go. What is more interesting is whether
:13:24. > :13:27.the referee... You can see Christie coming on the outside and she is
:13:28. > :13:33.clearly in second place and she manages that. Jianrou Li comes back
:13:34. > :13:38.on the inside and Christie challenges that and she is taken
:13:39. > :13:46.out. It is absolutely ridiculous. For my money that move by Jianrou Li
:13:47. > :13:51.has sanitised the opportunity of Christie getting a medal. And in the
:13:52. > :13:56.kind of form she was in she looked to me as if she could take anybody
:13:57. > :14:00.on. I cannot come to terms with that decision. Some of the decisions
:14:01. > :14:08.transcend refereeing I have seen over the years. The Olympic Games is
:14:09. > :14:13.also a very high pressured event for Olympic referees. Her shoulders are
:14:14. > :14:22.in front of the body of Jianrou Li of China. I asked the referee
:14:23. > :14:25.afterwards was the double penalty actually all on the same incident or
:14:26. > :14:31.maybe was there something else he saw? The referees look at different
:14:32. > :14:37.footage to what we see here on television. But to be fair it was
:14:38. > :14:42.only in the closing stages that Elise Christie got involved. She was
:14:43. > :14:48.not in the race. We were getting concerned that she was too distant.
:14:49. > :14:53.Then she got involved, clearly she had the power and speed to do it and
:14:54. > :15:00.she delivered it, but I am afraid she was up ended and rather sadly it
:15:01. > :15:19.has not proved to be fruitful, the trip to Sochi for Elise Christie. It
:15:20. > :15:23.is so sad. We will have to see how is she -- Hershey bounces back.
:15:24. > :15:27.Every time she has come out she has had to soak up incredible
:15:28. > :15:34.disappointment. She has had to do it three times. I have never, in all
:15:35. > :15:39.the Olympic Games I have watched, and this will be my seventh, I have
:15:40. > :15:46.never seen a skater that potentially could have got a medal in every
:15:47. > :15:51.single distance, who has gone out. And, of course, we saw the caption
:15:52. > :15:59.on the screen confirming there are two athletes in the B final. Explain
:16:00. > :16:05.why she cannot be in the B final. The B final is to rank the skaters,
:16:06. > :16:12.five, six, seven and eight, because they will receive an Olympic
:16:13. > :16:18.diploma. When you receive a penalty in a semifinal, you are not allowed
:16:19. > :16:21.to take part in the B final. Of course, Elise Christie will go away
:16:22. > :16:31.from these Olympic Games empty-handed. The next event is the
:16:32. > :16:43.B final for the men in the 500 metres. This is a chance for Jon
:16:44. > :16:47.Eley to try to clinch on this. If he could, it would place him fifth in
:16:48. > :17:00.the competition. This is the line-up. Sjinkie Knegt was a bronze
:17:01. > :17:08.medal winner in the 1500 metres, in fact the 1000.
:17:09. > :17:25.There is the relay final later this evening. Maybe conserving energy for
:17:26. > :17:31.that. I am still recovering from that decision. I think Christine is
:17:32. > :17:34.an innocent victim -- Elise Christie. I would be pleased to hear
:17:35. > :17:42.if you speak to the referees what they have to say.
:17:43. > :17:57.Jon Eley is getting himself ready to try to win the B final. He will be
:17:58. > :18:10.racing from position four what -- which is not a good position. Han,
:18:11. > :18:16.on the inside. He takes his place and alongside him, JR Celski, a
:18:17. > :18:25.former runner-up in the World Championships. He has got Olympic
:18:26. > :18:34.medals. A bronze medal for the relay in Vancouver. In third position,
:18:35. > :18:42.Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands. Bronze medal winner for the 1000 in
:18:43. > :18:46.Sochi. And Jon Eley. You have got to get those levers working quickly and
:18:47. > :18:55.try to sprint from forth into a better position. -- fourth place.
:18:56. > :19:01.Silence is called. Quiet in the arena. There is not a seat to be
:19:02. > :19:03.had. The atmosphere is sensational. The applause resonates around the
:19:04. > :19:23.arena. You can hardly hear yourself. We got away first time, I can hardly
:19:24. > :19:27.believe it. Jon Eley, great stuff. Up into second place. He almost went
:19:28. > :19:48.but rectified the problem. In third place, JR Celski. Han, he
:19:49. > :19:58.is still at the front. JR Celski got down the inside of Jon Eley. Han, he
:19:59. > :20:06.takes it from JR Celski and in third spot, Jon Eley, which means he is in
:20:07. > :20:11.seventh place overall. A very positive skate by Jon Eley, just
:20:12. > :20:18.saluting the ground. He probably gave it his best shot. It was an
:20:19. > :20:24.excellent start. Coming back from fourth place and into second. He
:20:25. > :20:29.might be a little disappointed, to have come from fourth place on the
:20:30. > :20:35.outside and lose it to JR Celski, a bronze medallist from Vancouver.
:20:36. > :20:43.Disappointment for Jon Eley, I suppose, as well. There is a roar in
:20:44. > :20:50.the arena. Just to confirm the result. The reason for the roar in
:20:51. > :20:56.the arena is because Victor An of Russia is going to be on the ice
:20:57. > :21:02.next. He has won a gold medal already in the 1000 and also a
:21:03. > :21:09.bronze medal in the 1500. What it means is that the skater who has won
:21:10. > :21:15.the most medals in short track history is the American commentating
:21:16. > :21:26.behind us, with eight medals. Victor An has got for gold medals and two
:21:27. > :21:35.silver. He is within two of equalling the American. The crowd,
:21:36. > :21:51.cheering, resonating around the arena. They are shouting, Russia! In
:21:52. > :21:58.2006, Torino, he got the bronze medal for this, Victor An. He used
:21:59. > :22:10.to enjoy the nickname of Harry Potter. That was because of the
:22:11. > :22:17.glasses. That he used to wear. Now, as a native Russian, of course, he
:22:18. > :22:22.is now known as Victor An. He made history for Russia because they have
:22:23. > :22:39.not won a medal in short speed skating and he has put that right.
:22:40. > :22:43.That is the line-up. It will be interesting, Victor An imposition
:22:44. > :22:51.three, how that will affect him. The Chinese have had amazing starts. Wu
:22:52. > :22:57.committee is starting from position number one. And by him, Cournoyer
:22:58. > :23:05.from Canada. And in third An position,
:23:06. > :23:33.-- Victor An in third position. Completing the line-up for China,
:23:34. > :23:40.Liang. Victor An comes into it as the winner of the World Cup. He won
:23:41. > :23:45.two rounds from the four to put himself in that top position. The
:23:46. > :24:02.noise is going to be unbelievable. Two Chinese skaters in this, will
:24:03. > :24:06.they be able to contain the firepower of Victor An of Russia?
:24:07. > :24:12.And what can the rookie Olympia do, Cournoyer, from Canada? I was going
:24:13. > :24:24.to say we have got this away first time! Liang. On the outside. The
:24:25. > :24:49.skaters are allowed two false starts. If you did it a second time,
:24:50. > :24:53.he would have to leave the ice. It seems strange not to see Charles
:24:54. > :25:01.Hamelin in a final, but he skidded out in the earlier rounds. And we
:25:02. > :25:17.are away. The Russian was left. I cannot believe it. He has a lot of
:25:18. > :25:26.work to do. China leading. Wu. Cournoyer is going well. In third
:25:27. > :25:33.spot, Liang. And one of the Chinese skaters has gone. Victor An in
:25:34. > :25:47.second. He goes down the inside. He is asked on issuing. -- he is
:25:48. > :25:56.astonishing. Look at that. That is his second gold medal from Sochi. No
:25:57. > :26:02.man in history has ever won five gold medals for short track speed
:26:03. > :26:12.skating. His overall tally is up to seven. Batman is unbelievable. What
:26:13. > :26:19.a card and collected performance. He waited for the Chinese skaters to
:26:20. > :26:26.make mistakes and cruised through. He went to Salt Lake City and did
:26:27. > :26:35.not win. He went to Torino and won three gold medals. He was just
:26:36. > :26:43.getting his girlfriend in the crowd. He is the greatest short track speed
:26:44. > :26:54.skater ever. He is really lapping this up. The Russian audience, I
:26:55. > :26:59.think he will be a megastar. He gotten all. . It almost seems like
:27:00. > :27:12.he knew what would happen. We saw the Chinese skater, I am not sure,
:27:13. > :27:17.Wu. He came through. He crashed out and Victor An came around the
:27:18. > :27:21.outside of the Canadian as if he was standing still. And then up the
:27:22. > :27:29.inside. Amazing skating by this Russian skater. He has a chance of
:27:30. > :27:39.getting another medal in the 5000 heaters relay. Look at his face.
:27:40. > :27:45.What a skater -- 5000 metres relay. There is always one in all sports
:27:46. > :27:54.who is a megastar. And that is the man in this discipline. Victor An.
:27:55. > :28:04.He is also the European champion. It is confirmed. The official results.
:28:05. > :28:22.The Olympic champion is Victor An from Russia. Victor An never gets
:28:23. > :28:25.involved with any problems. He started the race almost as if he
:28:26. > :28:33.knew something would happen so he would weight and keep out of
:28:34. > :28:41.trouble. There will be sporting hysteria when he comes out to get
:28:42. > :28:42.his flowers. Victor An of Russia gets the gold medal, his second from
:28:43. > :29:02.Sochi. Do you think he can get another
:29:03. > :29:08.medal? If he does, he will equal the American's record, who has eight.
:29:09. > :29:14.But he only has two gold medals so he has surpassed him for
:29:15. > :29:20.performance. In Vancouver he had an injury, he almost broke his ankle.
:29:21. > :29:29.That is why he missed the games in Vancouver. If he had skated those
:29:30. > :29:31.games, how many would he have? A Chinese woman is the greatest
:29:32. > :30:03.achiever. If something peculiar happens in the
:30:04. > :30:08.a final, then somebody in the B final could get a bronze medal. I
:30:09. > :30:13.will get you to run that by me after the race. It is nine laps of the
:30:14. > :30:18.track and sadly we are not going to see Elise Christie from Great
:30:19. > :30:26.Britain. The victim once again of harsh judgement. Two skaters
:30:27. > :30:35.involved in this. Jorien ter Mors and Valerie Maltais. How will they
:30:36. > :30:40.skater this? It will be tactical, it does not need to be quick, you do
:30:41. > :30:46.not need to jostle for position. Jorien ter Mors skated this
:30:47. > :31:02.afternoon and she will be taking it very easy. But it is a very serious
:31:03. > :31:08.race, believe you me. Jorien ter Mors is in second place and now she
:31:09. > :31:13.moves into the front place. She came here to win a medal. Unfortunately
:31:14. > :31:20.she has only won a gold medal in the long track. Only? Disappointment
:31:21. > :31:27.because there was a controversy that she would have preferred a bronze
:31:28. > :31:34.medal in short track than a gold medal in long track. And it has
:31:35. > :31:39.upset the racers in the long track. It was in the Dutch press. The
:31:40. > :31:45.European champion from the Netherlands comes to the front. Can
:31:46. > :31:55.Valerie Maltais attack her? It is still Jorien ter Mors at the front.
:31:56. > :32:03.What has the Canadian got left? Jorien ter Mors is going to win the
:32:04. > :32:13.B final. She takes it. In second spot is Valerie Maltais of Canada.
:32:14. > :32:21.Possibly a disappointing Championships for Jorien ter Mors.
:32:22. > :32:30.She finished for in the 1500, six in the 505th in this 500 metres. She
:32:31. > :32:37.led the last four laps. Valerie Maltais was trying to challenge the
:32:38. > :32:42.inner line. Like athletics where it is the chest of the athlete, that is
:32:43. > :32:53.why the skaters push their skates out. There was 29 centimetres
:32:54. > :33:08.difference between first and second. There is the official result of this
:33:09. > :33:12.B final. Not particularly fast. They will be ranked fifth and sixth in
:33:13. > :33:23.the overall classification of the 1000 metres. The skaters for the a
:33:24. > :33:35.final now come onto the ice. We can look forward to the medal contest.
:33:36. > :33:42.We have got two from Korea, Seung Hi Park and Suk Hee Shim. We have got
:33:43. > :34:01.one from China, Kexin Fan, and the American, Jessica Smith. They are
:34:02. > :34:14.now being introduced. Racing from position one is Seung Hi Park. She
:34:15. > :34:20.will skate on the inside and right alongside her is Jessica Smith from
:34:21. > :34:26.the USA. In lane three is Suk Hee Shim, only 17 years of age. And
:34:27. > :34:30.completing the line-up from China is Kexin Fan. This is the ladies 1000
:34:31. > :34:46.metre final. China were disqualified from the
:34:47. > :35:16.ladies' 3000 metres relay. Seung Hi Park and Suk Hee Shim have
:35:17. > :35:28.both got gold medals from Sochi, being members of the winning relay
:35:29. > :35:33.team. Already it is park ride on the front. Jessica Smith moves through
:35:34. > :35:39.again in that comfortable leading position. Quite lucky to make this
:35:40. > :35:46.final. I would rather have seen Elise Christie coming on the
:35:47. > :35:52.outside. Korea now in one and two. They will be looking for silver and
:35:53. > :35:59.gold finishing positions. Smith is trying to get involved in the mix.
:36:00. > :36:06.Six laps to go. But still at the front and looking very good indeed
:36:07. > :36:09.either Koreans. It is the 17-year-old who is being challenged
:36:10. > :36:18.by her fellow countryman. Now that changes. What is happening here is
:36:19. > :36:26.they are keeping the pace so high that the rest cannot get involved at
:36:27. > :36:36.the moment. The Chinese athlete is clinging to the pace. It is still
:36:37. > :36:45.Korea in one and two. Kexin Fan is trying to come on the outside. This
:36:46. > :37:05.is the last lap and Kexin Fan is coming round on the last lap. Park
:37:06. > :37:09.takes it. It was a spirited effort. A spirited bit of skating for Kexin
:37:10. > :37:14.Fan could not make it. Disappointing for Jessica Smith. I think she was
:37:15. > :37:19.lucky to get through to the final. There will not be any issues, the
:37:20. > :37:25.referees will look at the race review, but there are the
:37:26. > :37:33.celebrations from the Korean coach and the skaters. A second gold medal
:37:34. > :37:41.for Seung Hi Park. She adds that to the gold medal she caught in the
:37:42. > :37:49.relay. She was in Vancouver as well, so she is getting a nice trophy
:37:50. > :38:01.cabinet. Suk Hee Shim knows how to control these races from the front.
:38:02. > :38:15.Kexin Fan challenging. Could not quite make it. We are waiting for
:38:16. > :38:26.the official result. A victory salute from the winner, Seung Hi
:38:27. > :38:34.Park. There is going to be a break for the ice to be resurfaced and
:38:35. > :38:44.they will resume at 24 minutes past ten. We have got some ice
:38:45. > :39:04.resurfacing to go and we will see the 5000 metre men's relay. There is
:39:05. > :39:10.the official result. CLARE BALDING: If you are just getting back from
:39:11. > :39:15.work and you are thinking, hang on, that was the final that Elise
:39:16. > :39:19.Christie was meant to be in, what happened? She qualified from her
:39:20. > :39:20.quarterfinal into the semifinals and she looked strong and then this
:39:21. > :39:45.happened. Suk Hee Shim was not allowing that
:39:46. > :39:57.to happen at all and Elise Christie is comfortably at the back. Can she
:39:58. > :40:04.sit in that position? Absolutely. She needs to start moving up because
:40:05. > :40:11.there are six laps to go. But she is leaving it very late indeed. Come
:40:12. > :40:20.on, Braveheart, start thinking about making the move. On the front it is
:40:21. > :40:25.Suk Hee Shim. She is leading the two Chinese and Christie will be aware
:40:26. > :40:31.of that. When is she going to make her move? The Livingston express.
:40:32. > :40:35.The laps are going by and she is slightly distant, or is she
:40:36. > :40:44.gathering herself for a run? It looks like it. Here comes Christie.
:40:45. > :40:49.She is up to third. She has got a fantastic line on the inside. But
:40:50. > :40:57.the Chinese skater has challenged her again on the inside. She falls
:40:58. > :41:01.and takes Christie out as well. The third place goes to Suk Hee Shim.
:41:02. > :41:08.But I think Christie will be advanced. I would like to see that
:41:09. > :41:14.again. She was certainly in a qualifying position and again it is
:41:15. > :41:22.turmoil for Christie. Going into that bend Jianrou Li of China
:41:23. > :41:27.possibly will receive a penalty. To me I think that is a clear-cut case
:41:28. > :41:32.of being advanced and I would be very surprised if Christie does not
:41:33. > :41:39.get advanced. Take a look at the images. Suk Hee Shim controlled the
:41:40. > :41:44.race from the front as she has done in every race, splitting the Chinese
:41:45. > :41:54.girls, making sure they were not going to control the race. Christie
:41:55. > :41:57.left it very late indeed. Suk Hee Shim almost went down there. This is
:41:58. > :42:04.where Christie makes her challenge on the outside. There was no room
:42:05. > :42:13.and Christie came around the outside. It is interesting to see
:42:14. > :42:20.there was no way at all that she she could have got through. I am going
:42:21. > :42:28.to predict she will get through to the final. , the gold medal winner
:42:29. > :42:35.from day one, Jianrou Li, she spun, and then Christie was involved in
:42:36. > :42:40.that incident. Absolutely, a very difficult call indeed. They were
:42:41. > :42:46.both parallel going into that bend. I cannot believe it. They have both
:42:47. > :42:58.been penalised. She is not going to advance into the medal contest. I
:42:59. > :43:01.find that absolutely bewildering. It is becoming a habit, more
:43:02. > :43:12.disappointment and heartbreak. It looked like you are taken out
:43:13. > :43:16.completely. My view is when I saw the race it was the harder of the
:43:17. > :43:21.two races and it had good people in it, the people you expect to be in
:43:22. > :43:27.the final. I thought I would save my energy and use it at the end when I
:43:28. > :43:32.need to use it to qualify, but not to overuse it because I wanted to
:43:33. > :43:37.qualify for the final. I went to do my outside move and they went wide,
:43:38. > :43:45.so I switched inside because they cannot catch me out. You catch them
:43:46. > :43:49.by surprise. I knew I would have to pull tight and blocked her early.
:43:50. > :43:56.But she was still coming and she kept going. But everyone is trying
:43:57. > :44:03.to qualify, so it was feared dos. I was pretty sure she hit me from
:44:04. > :44:08.behind. Even from the 500 earlier when I got disqualified for diving
:44:09. > :44:14.in the inside, then I get disqualified for the opposite reason
:44:15. > :44:19.today. I am not saying anything about the referee, but I am very
:44:20. > :44:25.confused and heartbroken. Have you had time to look at the replay? What
:44:26. > :44:34.has your coach Nicky Gooch said? Everybody in Team GB is shocked. I
:44:35. > :44:40.never expected to be penalised. I do not understand. With 500 I knew
:44:41. > :44:44.there was a chance, but with that I am gobsmacked and I am devastated I
:44:45. > :44:48.have spent all this time training and not to be given the chance to do
:44:49. > :44:56.this final. I was skating so strongly. I don't know, I had not
:44:57. > :45:00.given it everything. Have you seen the replay? I watched it on the
:45:01. > :45:06.screen in the middle of the ice and it is the same that I felt, I felt I
:45:07. > :45:11.was pushed from behind and I was knocked off my feet. I do not
:45:12. > :45:15.understand how you can penalised two people. It is done and I have to
:45:16. > :45:20.accept that and that is the problem with short track, that every referee
:45:21. > :45:24.will judge the situation differently. They should have the
:45:25. > :45:33.same referee all year and it is more consistent. You must feel like the
:45:34. > :45:37.unluckiest athlete in the world, at this Winter Olympics. Can you say
:45:38. > :45:43.what it has been like for you? Everybody knows I have found it
:45:44. > :45:47.tough. I am trying to hold myself together further Great Britain
:45:48. > :45:53.because I do not want to be known for crying on camera. You are doing
:45:54. > :46:01.a very good job. I wanted to bounce back. I felt, this is my last
:46:02. > :46:09.chance, I want to do it for everyone, including myself. I was
:46:10. > :46:13.hammering the overtakes. I have never overtaken like that. To have
:46:14. > :46:19.it taken away, the chance taken away, it is devastating. Everybody
:46:20. > :46:25.in that final, I have beaten this year. You have so much support, the
:46:26. > :46:30.curling team came to support you. I have a good relationship with both
:46:31. > :46:34.of the girls and boys team and the figure skaters, we were together for
:46:35. > :46:39.a month and watching them yesterday I was so proud of them and I wanted
:46:40. > :46:48.them to feel the same with me. I am sure they are proud. What about
:46:49. > :46:55.Nicky Gooch, your coach? He is gobsmacked. We will look into this a
:46:56. > :46:59.little bit closer. What do you mean, looking into it closer? Are you
:47:00. > :47:04.suggesting you will talk to the officials for justification? To talk
:47:05. > :47:11.it through with them, to understand, so that I can move forward. I
:47:12. > :47:16.understand the 500, even though it was a close call and the 15, there
:47:17. > :47:21.was not much I could do, but more to understand why, that is all. You
:47:22. > :47:26.have done your country proud tonight. Everyone will agree you
:47:27. > :47:36.have been hard done by again. It has been dramatic, I know. -- traumatic.
:47:37. > :47:41.I was trying to skate so cleanly. I have had messages, wishing you the
:47:42. > :47:50.best. What do you want to say to the people of Britain? I am just amazed
:47:51. > :47:55.by it, I have never been known before and to have everybody backing
:47:56. > :47:59.me, I feel privileged. I will come back in four years and I will try
:48:00. > :48:11.again, definitely. I will be working hard. We look forward to seeing you
:48:12. > :48:16.in four years. Thank you, well done. I know how many people at home will
:48:17. > :48:23.want to reach through their televisions and give her a hug.
:48:24. > :48:28.Incredibly brave to talk about it. She is as confused as everybody
:48:29. > :48:32.else. Will flow Riley, the one thing we think might be why the judging
:48:33. > :48:38.panel disqualified her, was the incident before the last corner. She
:48:39. > :48:44.had so much speed, coming round the outside. There was a gap between the
:48:45. > :48:50.first skater and the second. outside. There was a gap between the
:48:51. > :48:54.first skater and the This is with four laps to go, you are saying,
:48:55. > :49:00.make your move and she is about to do it. She was skating well. She was
:49:01. > :49:04.not panicking. There was an incident. She starts to come around
:49:05. > :49:09.the outside and I thought she was going to go all the way around. She
:49:10. > :49:15.comes into third place and sets to move up really well. Up the inside,
:49:16. > :49:25.no problem. She protects her position here. I think it was where
:49:26. > :49:31.she was protecting her position. I think that is where the penalty was
:49:32. > :49:38.given, not where the incident happened. How much can you protect
:49:39. > :49:45.your position? If we are skating level, show me. If we are level, you
:49:46. > :49:49.have the advantage, coming around the outside. Elise Christie changed
:49:50. > :49:58.lanes. It is like driving a car, you move over to the left. That is where
:49:59. > :50:03.I think... I can do that? Not really. You cannot push somebody.
:50:04. > :50:08.You are not allowed to change your lane position and that is what she
:50:09. > :50:11.did. Because she had so much speed she came around the outside and
:50:12. > :50:18.tried to move in and that is where I think the problem happened. We think
:50:19. > :50:25.she disqualified her for the elbow and not actually for the fall, where
:50:26. > :50:34.she is not at fault. Clearly then, you can see she is in front. And
:50:35. > :50:41.then Li crashes out and takes her with her. We think it may be the
:50:42. > :50:48.earlier incident, before they turned into the corner. If it was that
:50:49. > :50:53.incident, that is pretty harsh. You say it is noncontact, but every race
:50:54. > :50:58.has contact. In her interview she said of course, the Chinese girl
:50:59. > :51:04.will not give away her position but there is argy-bargy, if you like. To
:51:05. > :51:09.make that call, particularly after the disappointment she has had, it
:51:10. > :51:18.is really harsh. It is desperately bad luck, 23 years old with winning
:51:19. > :51:22.the World Cup series, a bronze medal from the World Championships. She is
:51:23. > :51:26.relatively young. She has changed her mental approach since Vancouver.
:51:27. > :51:33.She said she wanted to understand this, she was confused. The coaches
:51:34. > :51:39.will go back. They can request to look at the footage, the video that
:51:40. > :51:44.the referees watched. That is the big problem. I have been lobbying
:51:45. > :51:49.for a number of years, why can we not see exactly the same footage
:51:50. > :51:55.that the referees look at? That makes it complicated to understand.
:51:56. > :52:06.It is not the only judging controversy. Last night, the
:52:07. > :52:09.ladies' singles in figure skating. I want to assess the strength of
:52:10. > :52:16.feeling after the short track speed skating. How eloquent was a Elise
:52:17. > :52:20.Christie, but most people watching would not have been polite to sum up
:52:21. > :52:27.how they feel. A lot of people do know, those who were watching. Jenny
:52:28. > :52:31.Jones, the snowboarder, she was watching and she tweeted it was so
:52:32. > :52:36.harsh, Elise Christie, such a great skater, what happened? That was the
:52:37. > :52:41.immediate question everybody wanted to know. Penny Coomes, in the ice
:52:42. > :52:45.dance, she said she was devastated for Elise Christie and did not
:52:46. > :52:51.understand the decision. People could not work out what they were
:52:52. > :52:55.seeing. Chemmy Alcott said, that is brutal, I do not understand this
:52:56. > :53:03.sport. And Aimee Fuller is gutted for Elise Christie. People are
:53:04. > :53:06.saying they lived through the Olympic Games with Elise Christie,
:53:07. > :53:11.going through the disappointments with her and it is heartbreaking for
:53:12. > :53:15.people to see her going out in this way. That is the reaction from a lot
:53:16. > :53:23.of people. Wilf O'Reilly understands and he does not -- did not
:53:24. > :53:32.understand at first. I have had pieces out of my blade. Again, the
:53:33. > :53:37.referees need to start making it clear to everybody and allowing the
:53:38. > :53:40.millions of people around the world to see what the referees are seeing
:53:41. > :53:45.and maybe we can understand this sport. A lot of people think it is
:53:46. > :53:54.rubbish, I might not watch that again. They do not know the hard
:53:55. > :54:00.work that has gone into it. We can get a reaction from inside the
:54:01. > :54:06.British skating camp. I cannot believe this, we are here
:54:07. > :54:12.again with more heartbreak for Elise Christie. Did you see the replay? I
:54:13. > :54:18.did have a small look at it. I am disappointed. You have to respect
:54:19. > :54:22.the referees' decision, but I think it is outrageous. I am heartbroken
:54:23. > :54:29.for her. It was clear for everybody to see she was taken out. In sport
:54:30. > :54:35.you need referees to make decisions but unfortunately, there are
:54:36. > :54:39.questions within sport about whether it is a decision made on opinion,
:54:40. > :54:47.maybe the rule needs to be more clear the future. We put together a
:54:48. > :54:51.great team. Not just Elise Christie, but the whole team, the support
:54:52. > :54:54.team, in the short track conversion have done amazingly well and I am
:54:55. > :54:59.proud to be part of that and to manage that. We came here with many
:55:00. > :55:10.opportunities. We came out fighting today. I thought this was going to
:55:11. > :55:14.be fighting Friday. Everybody around Elise Christie and Elise Christie
:55:15. > :55:23.herself, because she has to do it, hat to turn out and do it. Jon Eley,
:55:24. > :55:28.too, I won't forget his performance. I am disappointed and frustrated. I
:55:29. > :55:32.am probably angry. Angry at the decision of the referee.
:55:33. > :55:38.Ultimately, you have to respect the decision, but, basically, he was
:55:39. > :55:42.wrong. I have covered many sports and travels the world and I have not
:55:43. > :55:51.met such an unlucky athletes like Elyse Christie what she has been
:55:52. > :55:56.through. We knew what we were trying to do, she was World Cup champion,
:55:57. > :56:02.world number one in the 1000 metres, she led every race. We changed the
:56:03. > :56:07.tactics for the Olympics. We gave her experience at racing from the
:56:08. > :56:09.back, from the middle. She was happy with her performance. She believed
:56:10. > :56:15.she had made the Olympic final, again. She skated beautifully
:56:16. > :56:22.tonight. We chatted before the race. She was in the zone. That is
:56:23. > :56:28.hard to take. All you can do as the support team is give the athlete...
:56:29. > :56:32.The training environment, give them an opportunity. Elise Christie has
:56:33. > :56:38.taken that opportunity and won a silver medal and got it taken from
:56:39. > :56:39.her. If you look at what the girl was disqualified for in the race
:56:40. > :57:00.before, or what Shim did. It is the same. It is
:57:01. > :57:09.not fair. If it were, we would be celebrating one, two, or possibly
:57:10. > :57:15.three medals. You said she had the talent to win medals at 500 metres,
:57:16. > :57:20.1500 and 1000 and she goes home without registering a result in any
:57:21. > :57:26.of them. That is probably the most disappointing. What was really
:57:27. > :57:32.nice, the support staff have worked well. I went to the press conference
:57:33. > :57:37.at the start of these games. They said about managing the processes.
:57:38. > :57:41.If I look at how the whole team have rallied around to manage the
:57:42. > :57:45.processes, the outcome, unfortunately, is not the outcome we
:57:46. > :57:54.wanted for Elise Christie, but they have done a magnificent job. How do
:57:55. > :58:02.you pick yourself up? You won two gold medals, you got a chance to win
:58:03. > :58:05.real gold medals and you had two crashes. What do you and British
:58:06. > :58:12.skating do to make sure Elise Christie does not just go to a
:58:13. > :58:16.different sport? The one thing that came out of these Olympics is that
:58:17. > :58:22.short track is on the map in the UK. I did it back in 1988 as Nicky Gooch
:58:23. > :58:29.did it in 1994 when he Wigan a bronze medal and Elise Christie is
:58:30. > :58:41.doing it. -- when he won a bronze medal. Four years is the next
:58:42. > :58:46.Olympics, it is four years of hard work. She is still young. It was
:58:47. > :58:53.nice to see the positive response in her interview, as well. Hello, OK.
:58:54. > :59:02.We are OK, I was worried we would be moved away. Jon Eley, he is one of
:59:03. > :59:06.the more senior athletes. He was so touched to be voted in as the flag
:59:07. > :59:13.bearer and he finished seventh, which is a cracking results. It was
:59:14. > :59:19.an amazing results. He was so relaxed coming into the games. There
:59:20. > :59:25.is no pressure on him. He made the semifinal but he had a little
:59:26. > :59:31.mistake with two laps to go. It could have been a final and a medal,
:59:32. > :59:37.easily. Having watched the sport, it can go one way or the other. You can
:59:38. > :59:43.be unlucky or lucky. We are going to give you a chance to enjoy the most
:59:44. > :59:47.extreme final, the 2000 to 1000 metres. Steven Bradbury thought he
:59:48. > :59:48.was lucky to get into the final and a medal would be a bonus and this
:59:49. > :00:05.happened. In 1994 in Lily hammer Steven
:00:06. > :00:11.Bradbury was part of the 5000 metres skating relay team that won a
:00:12. > :00:15.bronze, Australia's first ever skating level. He was in Salt Lake
:00:16. > :00:22.City in the short track 1000 metres. By his own admission he was
:00:23. > :00:31.not the fastest skater. One lap to go and they are all bunched. He has
:00:32. > :00:39.gone and there are two left. There are only two standing at the end.
:00:40. > :00:45.He was through to the final. His tactics were not to lead from the
:00:46. > :00:57.front. This is the battle for the medals. Canada lead. Nobody putting
:00:58. > :01:06.in a great injection of pace. Into second place and China are third.
:01:07. > :01:13.Australia are fifth. China second, Korea third, Canada four. There is
:01:14. > :01:23.the bell. China are ominously placed. Oh, and they have all gone.
:01:24. > :01:30.That has left Steven Bradbury to cross the finishing line. The most
:01:31. > :01:36.amazing gold medal of any Olympic Games. And Australia's first ever
:01:37. > :01:41.gold medal at the Winter Olympics. A reward for being this far back and
:01:42. > :01:49.willing the entire field to tumble at the last turn. The power of oars
:01:50. > :01:55.as in positive thinking. He is still shaking his head. He cannot believe
:01:56. > :01:58.it either. Australia's first medal of these games. He gets generous
:01:59. > :02:11.applause because he did nothing wrong.
:02:12. > :02:17.Wonderful to hear in that he is the voice of the late Tony cupboard.
:02:18. > :02:22.Steven Bradbury became the first Australian to win a Winter Olympic
:02:23. > :02:27.gold medal and he said, I know that I was lucky, everybody knows that I
:02:28. > :02:32.was lucky, but it does not change the fact that I worked five hours a
:02:33. > :02:37.day, six days a week for 12 years to get lucky and it is that kind of
:02:38. > :02:43.attitude that Elise Christie needs to take forward. She has the talent
:02:44. > :02:46.and if she works hard enough it will one day come right and we hope that
:02:47. > :02:51.she gets the glory that she deserves. The sporting action
:02:52. > :03:25.continues thick and fast on the BBC with this.
:03:26. > :03:43.The Six Nations is back at 7:55pm tonight. It continues tomorrow.
:03:44. > :03:49.Before that we will have all of the highlights from Day 14 and hopefully
:03:50. > :03:55.we will be joined by the British men's curling team and we will have
:03:56. > :04:01.highlights from the women's slalom and the ski cross. But we are going
:04:02. > :04:05.to bring you by Arsenal and now. Russia are hunting a third
:04:06. > :04:11.successive gold medal in this. They have dominated this. Norway and
:04:12. > :04:16.Belarus looked on paper to be their main rivals.
:04:17. > :04:27.There is a huge roar from the Russians in the crowd. But there are
:04:28. > :04:34.plenty of nations here who will fancy their chances. Switzerland at
:04:35. > :04:40.the front now. Yes, it is a good start for her. There may well have
:04:41. > :04:47.been a problem for the Germans. They have won a medal in every
:04:48. > :04:53.competition, but the German has lost one of her polls. They have a
:04:54. > :05:03.quality Quartet, so they may well be able to regain that deficit. Ukraine
:05:04. > :05:11.clear five, Russia clear five, and a big cheer from the crowd. It was one
:05:12. > :05:15.more target to go. They have missed one and they have missed again, so
:05:16. > :05:23.that is 20 seconds thrown away by the Italians. There is a problem.
:05:24. > :05:29.The Frenchwoman is down. She looks as though she has taken a real
:05:30. > :05:36.tumble. What a tussle for gold this is turning out to be. The Italians
:05:37. > :05:45.are out of it for now. Remember, we have lost the French. Germany had
:05:46. > :05:53.problems. There were issues with the rifle. The French have gone for
:05:54. > :05:57.now. The Germans have gone. One by one the big nations are falling by
:05:58. > :06:04.the wayside, but not the Russians and not the Ukrainians. Halfway
:06:05. > :06:21.stage. This has been a superb effort from Ukraine so far. She is giving
:06:22. > :06:28.it everything. Remember the Czech Republic have gone good athlete,
:06:29. > :06:36.great athlete, good athlete, great athlete. They may lose some ground
:06:37. > :06:42.here. We have got Russia and Norway coming into the stadium side-by-side
:06:43. > :06:50.in third and fourth. What drama lies in store in the second half of this
:06:51. > :06:55.race? This is vital. The crowd are not helping. It was so close. 30 or
:06:56. > :07:07.40 seconds could have been thrown away. They only had 40.69 to spare
:07:08. > :07:16.over Russia and Norway. Surviving that wobble in the range. Will it be
:07:17. > :07:22.enough to bring Ukraine and amazing gold medal with just two days to go
:07:23. > :07:29.in Sochi? And the Russians are coming. Ukraine leads. But look at
:07:30. > :07:42.how quickly Russia is closing her down. She is going to come under
:07:43. > :07:48.real pressure. There were 17 seconds at the last checkpoint and now it is
:07:49. > :07:59.just ten. It is going to get close in the last stages. This is
:08:00. > :08:03.brilliant shooting. Superb shooting and Ukraine could be on their way to
:08:04. > :08:07.gold. Russia have got one miss and they are in a bit of trouble, but
:08:08. > :08:18.they can take 15 seconds out of Ukraine. This has been a Quartet and
:08:19. > :08:23.beaten by the opposition and the politics and united by passion. In
:08:24. > :08:30.so doing they have created sporting history. What a timely reminder of
:08:31. > :08:34.the power of sport and what a poignant, poignant example of the
:08:35. > :08:40.great principles on which the modern Olympic movement was founded. It is
:08:41. > :08:46.gold for Ukraine. It is a moment they could hardly believe what
:08:47. > :08:52.happened. Huge pressure on all four of them and they have delivered in
:08:53. > :08:58.some style. Silver for Russia. The crowd responding. Once again they
:08:59. > :09:04.are on the podium. It is an amazing record that keeps on going. She is
:09:05. > :09:09.absolutely exhausted, but she will get a moment on the podium. Bronze
:09:10. > :09:16.for the Norwegians in the women's relay to go with their mixed gold.
:09:17. > :09:29.What an amazing evening for Ukraine and so richly, richly deserved. Many
:09:30. > :09:39.Ukrainian athletes have opted to return home because of the violence
:09:40. > :09:43.in their country. The former pole-vault Sergey Bubka insisted
:09:44. > :09:48.they should stay here to help unify the nation. Perhaps they have
:09:49. > :09:56.provided a little bit of cheer for the country after the race. After
:09:57. > :09:57.the race they asked everybody to observe a minute's silence for
:09:58. > :10:09.everybody who died. Very relevant for Ukraine. We are
:10:10. > :10:14.going to head into the Bolshoy to bring you the highlights of the
:10:15. > :10:23.hockey final between the two superpowers of women's ice hockey.
:10:24. > :10:41.Canada versus USA, the gold medal will be one. That's won. The
:10:42. > :10:57.Americans draw first blood. The captain leads by example. Carpenter
:10:58. > :11:00.scores. The US now have that too -0 advantage and Canada could be facing
:11:01. > :11:07.their first Olympic defeat in 16 years. Canada is running out of time
:11:08. > :11:16.and they are also running out of ideas. Out of absolutely nothing.
:11:17. > :11:28.The Canadians score and we will have a grand slam finish. The net is
:11:29. > :11:41.empty weight to the right hand side. Are you kidding me? Denied. You
:11:42. > :11:50.suspect the Canadians were always going to have one. And the Canadians
:11:51. > :11:58.have levelled it with 54 seconds to go. The Americans cannot believe
:11:59. > :12:21.what has happened. We go into overtime. A golden goal for Canada.
:12:22. > :12:28.She took it into overtime and now she wins it. A stunning, stunning
:12:29. > :12:33.comeback. Canada finish on top again.
:12:34. > :12:41.It really was an extraordinary match. In the men's game Sweden are
:12:42. > :12:45.through to the final. They beat Finland in their semifinal. Right
:12:46. > :12:50.behind me the USA and Canada are facing off again. We will be joining
:12:51. > :13:09.it live after we catch up with the action so far.
:13:10. > :13:21.He scores on the redirect. Canada take the lead. It is the start of
:13:22. > :13:30.the second period. Good interplay in the zone. Quick was beaten. It is
:13:31. > :13:40.food for thought for the Americans. Tremendous work from the Canadians.
:13:41. > :14:07.He finds Jamie Benn. It was an easy goal from there. We join it now live
:14:08. > :14:17.in the third period. Calida wearing the red shirts. --
:14:18. > :14:31.Canada. America are struggling to get
:14:32. > :14:53.anything going. That was caught brilliantly by Drew
:14:54. > :15:00.Doughty. The Canadians are smothering them. They are making it
:15:01. > :15:08.more difficult with each shift that passes. It has not been a classic
:15:09. > :15:12.yet, this game. It has been a grinding effort from the Canadians,
:15:13. > :15:25.who have taken their chance when it came.
:15:26. > :15:33.Sidney Crosby has found it tough in this tournament. I suppose he will
:15:34. > :15:42.my mind, as long as a gold medal comes his way at the end of it.
:15:43. > :15:54.Crosby threw himself at it, but he could not find the target.
:15:55. > :16:01.A tremendous shift from the Canadians, building momentum.
:16:02. > :16:04.Crosby, on the second chance, trying to dive and hoping it crossed the
:16:05. > :16:29.line. He could not get to it. This is an opportunity for the
:16:30. > :16:38.Americans is that deflected off a stick. The play stops with the
:16:39. > :16:45.whistle. The Americans are struggling to deal with the
:16:46. > :16:51.Canadians. 32 - 23, they are outshooting the Americans, the
:16:52. > :16:56.Canadians. Crosby was diving after the rebound. He sees the replay on
:16:57. > :17:07.the screen. Crosby has yet to score in this tournament. You know that it
:17:08. > :17:12.is coming at some point, if you think back to Vancouver. That was
:17:13. > :17:16.almost a goal for the Americans. People were only really remembering
:17:17. > :17:20.the one goal, they did not worry about the rest of the tournament,
:17:21. > :17:27.because he got the overtime winner against the Americans in the final.
:17:28. > :17:28.This is a repeat of that match. I would say that was a little more
:17:29. > :17:49.exciting. James van Riemsdyk, who had that
:17:50. > :17:53.chance. The tip in front of net a moment ago on Carey Price, was more
:17:54. > :17:58.dangerous than maybe will be remembered. It was just touched in
:17:59. > :18:03.front as the pass came out of the corner. James van Riemsdyk, having
:18:04. > :18:14.an outstanding tournament, right there again. If Corey Price had been
:18:15. > :18:16.cheating at all, it would have been a goal, but he stayed where he was
:18:17. > :18:32.meant to be. Rick Nash, Abe big and strong
:18:33. > :18:43.player, found the lovely pass. -- a big and strong player.
:18:44. > :18:51.Ryan Madonna got in the way that time. The Americans are blocking the
:18:52. > :19:00.shots, getting in the way and wanting to keep this as a one goal
:19:01. > :19:07.game. Into the body, Carey Price again, rock-solid. As we move to the
:19:08. > :19:12.third period, the tempo will increase, as the Americans need to
:19:13. > :19:20.push forward. They need to start getting closer to the shot count the
:19:21. > :19:25.Canadians have on them. Seven to the advantage of Canada. Look at the
:19:26. > :19:30.shots coming in. TJ Oshie was getting in front of the Canadians
:19:31. > :19:36.shot. The Americans are better overall shooters. Their percentage
:19:37. > :19:47.is higher than Canada. But the one goal on the board right now is all
:19:48. > :19:52.that matters. Patrick Kane has so much speed. Zach Parise is a shooter
:19:53. > :19:57.but he put that in the middle of the maple leaf and you will not score
:19:58. > :20:08.too many if you put it on the goalie of the calibre of Carey Price. One
:20:09. > :20:13.of the best puck handlers in the world. He can make you miss. He will
:20:14. > :20:18.need to get going. He has not scored. He does not need to, he can
:20:19. > :20:24.facilitate anyone on the line. Sweden await the winner of this
:20:25. > :20:28.match in the final. Finland will play in the bronze medal match,
:20:29. > :20:46.which is tomorrow. The final is on Sunday. He could not find the
:20:47. > :21:10.target, Chris Kunitz. Patrick Bergeron had to drop his
:21:11. > :21:14.stick, it was broken. The shooting has not been as good as the teams
:21:15. > :21:31.would have liked. A lot of nets have been missed.
:21:32. > :21:41.Ryan Getzlaf, a moment ago, almost going over the boards. You could
:21:42. > :21:57.have had too many men on the ice Canada.
:21:58. > :22:06.Jamie Benn scored the goal that separates these two. Corey Perry,
:22:07. > :22:21.one of the scorers in Vancouver. It is starting to pick-up and it
:22:22. > :22:26.would do as we are inside 12 minutes. The Canadians are feeling
:22:27. > :22:31.jubilant after the Canadian women won goals last night. -- the gold
:22:32. > :22:52.medal. The Americans need to start gambling
:22:53. > :23:03.soon. Ryan McDonagh, whose shot is taken away. Patrick Sharp waited and
:23:04. > :23:07.waited. Matt Duchene saw it hop over his stick. It was a great delay by
:23:08. > :23:27.Patrick Sharp. Canada gave it away on the boards.
:23:28. > :23:38.Ryan Kessler came in hard. Jay Bouwmeester, the big defence
:23:39. > :23:55.man, did well there. Pietrangelo, he did well. He turned
:23:56. > :24:00.away from trouble. And then he put Jay Bouwmeester in trouble. Phil
:24:01. > :24:11.Kessel tried to feed it through. Off the blocker. That sequence came from
:24:12. > :24:16.loose play in behind the Canadian goal, as their two defencemen are
:24:17. > :24:21.not perfectly aware of where they are moving to and the timing as they
:24:22. > :24:27.got this off the boards. The sharp shot through the stream. Matt
:24:28. > :24:45.Duchene almost had the chance to put it in the empty goal.
:24:46. > :24:54.Chris Kunitz was mugged, no doubt about it. Phil Kessel did not like
:24:55. > :25:00.the call, but I do not think the referee had a choice. It was a
:25:01. > :25:08.clever play by Patrice Bergeron. He lets up. Phil Kessel hack to come
:25:09. > :25:19.back and steak the stick a way of Chris Kunitz, driving to the empty
:25:20. > :25:28.cider goal. -- driving to the empty side of the goal. Yesterday, two
:25:29. > :25:35.games were won with comebacks. Canada go on the power play. If they
:25:36. > :25:39.go two up, they will definitely be in the box seats. That was a great
:25:40. > :26:10.block. That was well blocked again. Canada
:26:11. > :26:25.have more advantage. Ryan Callahan powers to the bench.
:26:26. > :26:32.Has the intensity gone a little from the Canadians' play? The power play
:26:33. > :26:36.must improve. They have great shooting from the blue line with
:26:37. > :26:50.this man involved with the offence all tournament.
:26:51. > :26:59.This is a moment that could build momentum if they do not concede. Was
:27:00. > :27:07.that straight into the stands? There was a deflection? Ryan Callahan
:27:08. > :27:16.coming down on those shots. Shea Weber, he can fire the shots. He is
:27:17. > :27:23.laying down and taking the punishment. That is to prevent the
:27:24. > :27:28.offensive defencemen from getting their shots through to the goal. His
:27:29. > :27:40.team-mates love him to pieces because he is completely selfless.
:27:41. > :27:49.Canada hanging on to their lead. A place in the final is at stake. The
:27:50. > :27:52.defending champions in pole position at the minute. Phil Kessel is out of
:27:53. > :28:00.the penalty box. Patrice Bergeron, he almost squeezed
:28:01. > :28:22.that home. Patrice Bergeron having a tremendous
:28:23. > :28:24.game for Canada, almost opening up the backside. He is leading the line
:28:25. > :28:47.with Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Canada lead 1-0 and that game
:28:48. > :28:52.continues on the red button. Next on BBC Two I will be joined by the
:28:53. > :28:55.silver medal winning curlers and we will be discussing the short track
:28:56. > :28:57.speed skating. Join us in a moment.
