:01:37. > :01:49.Good morning. I hope you are in go mode at a time, we are here. I'm

:01:50. > :01:52.going to start with a quote from Chemmy Alcott. "Imagine driving

:01:53. > :01:56.along a motorway at 70mph and sticking your head out of the

:01:57. > :01:59.window. Then add to that weaving past the cars in front and

:02:00. > :02:06.occasionally jumping over a few. It's that fast, that exhilarating

:02:07. > :02:10.and you need that much focus." She is describing what it is like to

:02:11. > :02:16.compete in the women's downhill, and that is the event we are focusing on

:02:17. > :02:20.this morning. Because in Sochi, we are going to be crowning the Queen

:02:21. > :02:25.of speed today. Favourite to ascend the throne is

:02:26. > :02:28.once again Maria Hoefl Reisch. The German took the Super Combined title

:02:29. > :02:31.on Monday and alpine skiing history beckons if she can turn on the

:02:32. > :02:34.burners today. Chemmy Alcott's overcome injury and

:02:35. > :02:37.raised thousands of pounds herself to fund a fourth Olympic campaign.

:02:38. > :02:42.She deserves another shot at this and would love to crack the top ten

:02:43. > :02:46.in the ultimate speed event on skis. It's hurry, hurry, hurry as well in

:02:47. > :02:49.the Ice Cube, where Great Britain's curlers tackle the most dominant

:02:50. > :02:53.women's team so far, the Canadians. This is a big moment for Eve and co.

:02:54. > :02:57.All of Russia is poised to watch every move of the pairs event. Can

:02:58. > :03:00.they win back the title their skaters owned for decades tonight?

:03:01. > :03:01.We'll talk it over with Robin Cousins.

:03:02. > :03:05.And there's a 15-year-old Swiss whizz kid right in the thick of

:03:06. > :03:14.things today as her team takes on the Finns on a key day in women's

:03:15. > :03:18.ice hockey. Well, it does feel a bit like a

:03:19. > :03:21.spring day here in Sochi, temperatures are certainly rising.

:03:22. > :03:29.It is a beautiful day, those birdsong in the air. Snowboarders

:03:30. > :03:34.were getting a little hot under the collar about the warm temperatures

:03:35. > :03:39.compromising the state of the halfpipe. Going up Rosa Khutor, we

:03:40. > :03:43.are hearing that the organisers have been using some of the snow they

:03:44. > :03:55.have stockpiled since last year in giant refrigerating since last year.

:03:56. > :03:59.They are using it to patch up the pistes in the resorts around

:04:00. > :04:01.Krasnaya Polyana in the mountains. Let's hope the conditions are

:04:02. > :04:05.race-worthy of the blue riband event in women's alpine skiing - their

:04:06. > :04:08.downhill. This is where it's happening, at the Rhosa Khutor, The

:04:09. > :04:11.women have already raced on the downhill course as part of the

:04:12. > :04:14.combined event on Monday, but that was from a lower start.

:04:15. > :04:17.So it's the full-length version they'll tackle today. And in the

:04:18. > :04:20.absence of the injured American Lindsey Vonn, the gold medallist in

:04:21. > :04:23.Vancouver, we're going to have new champion today. That's about the

:04:24. > :04:26.only certainty. So how are conditions up on the mountain this

:04:27. > :04:28.morning? Graham Bell was on a very early chairlift for course

:04:29. > :04:31.inspection. This is the forest drop. This is the

:04:32. > :04:36.toughest part of the women's downhill. The gradient is about 38

:04:37. > :04:41.degrees. Just to stand on the slope, you have to stand with your legs

:04:42. > :04:46.well apart and the weight on your outside ski. It is the same way you

:04:47. > :04:48.are racing. You come through Deauville's spine cover stand apart

:04:49. > :04:54.and have the dive forward on this really steep slope and put the

:04:55. > :04:57.weight on that right ski as you go down the three terms. From here on,

:04:58. > :05:03.it is mostly guiding on the lower part of the course and it is

:05:04. > :05:08.possible to make a time. Hoefl-Riesch made a big mistake in

:05:09. > :05:12.the combined downhill but made a time lower down. This part of the

:05:13. > :05:17.course should suit skiers like Anna Fenninger, Lara Gut. Let's have a

:05:18. > :05:29.look at it. Chemmy Alcott just going through her

:05:30. > :05:34.mental visualisation before the start. The snow conditions are

:05:35. > :05:38.absolutely perfect. It has been very warm over the last couple of days

:05:39. > :05:42.but a clear night last night has frozen it, absolutely bullet-proof

:05:43. > :05:45.hard. It will mean the course is lightning fast and it should be a

:05:46. > :05:53.real test. HAZEL IRVINE: Emma and Graham join

:05:54. > :05:56.us this morning. You have seen the course, what sort of race are these

:05:57. > :06:03.conditions going to allow for us today? Well, it froze overnight, the

:06:04. > :06:10.skies cleared up and the thermal blanket of climates disappeared.

:06:11. > :06:17.--clouds. The piste is hard, whether it will stay hard is not sure, the

:06:18. > :06:22.sun is very strong. We are not the most southern of Winter Olympics, I

:06:23. > :06:28.think that was Californian or Nagano in Japan, but Emma, what is the son

:06:29. > :06:33.going to do to the piste? It is absolutely baking here, boiling

:06:34. > :06:38.hot, very much spring conditions. If you look behind us, the bottom third

:06:39. > :06:51.of the course is directly in the sun, so it was soft up. -- soft

:06:52. > :06:58.about private elite --. Adult. -- it will soften up. Yes, I would like to

:06:59. > :07:02.start at number one this. Hoefl-Riesch is the favourite for

:07:03. > :07:08.this, she could make history as an alpine skiing. Remind everybody what

:07:09. > :07:15.at stake for her? Maria Hoefl-Riesch, she will equal the

:07:16. > :07:21.record of four gold medals in Winter Olympics if she wins this. She is

:07:22. > :07:29.starting at 20. If the core softens up, which are think it will, we are

:07:30. > :07:35.one -- going to be looking at early numbers. Julia Mancuso is going 12.

:07:36. > :07:41.I think 20 is a bit late to start. Mancuso has a really good chance,

:07:42. > :07:44.she is coming in with so much confidence and she had a storming

:07:45. > :07:56.combined downhill, so she is a favourite but number one, Sutter,

:07:57. > :08:01.normally it is not good to be number one but conditions today, it is a

:08:02. > :08:07.good one. OK, enjoy it, we will speak to you both later on. I should

:08:08. > :08:11.tell everybody that Chemmy Alcott of Great Britain is skiing number 35,

:08:12. > :08:28.so that is quite late in a field of 42. She is 31. These are her fourth

:08:29. > :08:32.and most likely final Olympics. She produced her best in Turin, 11th in

:08:33. > :08:36.the downhill and after coming back from another major injury, another

:08:37. > :08:40.leg break, she would love to crack the top ten this time.

:08:41. > :08:45.This is the scar where the kneecap was pulled out and then you can see

:08:46. > :08:49.all of the scholars here, there are a few here from surgeries -- the

:08:50. > :08:54.scars. I have a metal nail running from the kneecap to down here. If

:08:55. > :09:02.you touch it, you can feel it is not a real bone. Do you set scanners

:09:03. > :09:11.off? Yes. Can I just say I haven't shaved my legs because I have been

:09:12. > :09:16.working hard at skiing. How many bones is it you have

:09:17. > :09:23.broken? This is my least favourite question because I want to promote

:09:24. > :09:30.the sport skiing, but I have never broken ?45. How much does it mean to

:09:31. > :09:34.be here when up to a month ago, it looked like you wouldn't make it.

:09:35. > :09:45.Speaking I think because it is my fourth Games, people will think I'm

:09:46. > :09:48.not excited. That I'm so excited. Five months before they announced

:09:49. > :09:51.Team GB, I was in hospital having surgery and I was a wreck before

:09:52. > :09:58.they announced my name and it was just a fantastic feeling.

:09:59. > :10:08.It is a very late different look women's downhill this year, no

:10:09. > :10:14.Lindsey Vonn. Who is the favourite? It is tragic that Vonn is not here,

:10:15. > :10:17.because whoever wins it will say they wanted when she did not

:10:18. > :10:26.compete, because she is the star of women's skiing. Skis for the gold

:10:27. > :10:30.medal, she has got it. She has driven us all to be harder and

:10:31. > :10:35.faster and go out and break personal boundaries. And I think because

:10:36. > :10:40.there are so many people that are bubbling under the surface, thinking

:10:41. > :10:45.it could be the Olympics. You have a feel of the mountain, what do you

:10:46. > :10:50.think about the course? I'm really excited. I was the first girl in the

:10:51. > :10:53.start gate today who hadn't skied the course. They have had warm up

:10:54. > :10:57.events over the years and I have been injured every time, and that

:10:58. > :11:02.was refreshing. I felt really young again. I remember going to Salt Lake

:11:03. > :11:11.City in my first Olympics and I was thinking, how'd you do this? And now

:11:12. > :11:16.I have the experience. So talk me through your brain in the start gate

:11:17. > :11:21.before the women's downhill? Do you want to go there? I don't think you

:11:22. > :11:27.will ever understand it. Try me. Chemmy Alcott pushes out at the

:11:28. > :11:33.start. It is knowing how to put yourself in the best environment to

:11:34. > :11:38.cut your limit. The last nine months, it is getting to start gate.

:11:39. > :11:42.It is a challenge, another thing I'm putting myself through. So the best

:11:43. > :11:50.way of judging it is not by position but by what you say? You will be

:11:51. > :11:55.able to tell by how I hold my body on the finish.

:11:56. > :11:59.I will be looking out for that. She really is one of the most positive,

:12:00. > :12:03.life affirming people you could wish to meet and she has been a fantastic

:12:04. > :12:14.ski race of the Great Britain. Graham, four top 14s, six top 20 is

:12:15. > :12:17.at the Olympic Games. How much credited does she deserve? If you

:12:18. > :12:22.care about medals for mental toughness, she would have won so

:12:23. > :12:28.many binder -- if you gave out. She has come back from injury on so many

:12:29. > :12:33.occasions and she always used to ski best on courses that were tougher.

:12:34. > :12:38.She is a real racer's racer and that is why she is so well liked on the

:12:39. > :12:43.tour. A fantastic, positive attitude as well, and it is great to have her

:12:44. > :12:50.here at the Olympic Games and she thoroughly deserves her spot in the

:12:51. > :12:54.start gate. She certainly does. We saw her put down a good run in the

:12:55. > :12:57.super combined, top 16 in the downhill section. We wonder what is

:12:58. > :13:06.possible for her and everyone else as we see the course run. It is time

:13:07. > :13:12.for the women's downhill. Who is going to join the likes of the

:13:13. > :13:12.previous winners? Emma Carrick-Anderson and Matt Chilton,

:13:13. > :13:28.let's find out. MATT CHILTON: Thank you, it is a

:13:29. > :13:32.beautiful day in the Russian mountains, barely a

:13:33. > :13:35.MATT CHILTON: Thank you, it is a beautiful day in the Russian breath

:13:36. > :13:50.of wind. We will look at the vital statistics of this women's downhill

:13:51. > :14:06.course. There are lots of chances for the Swiss today, with

:14:07. > :14:09.Kaufmann-Abderhalden... These other scenes at the top, with final

:14:10. > :14:15.preparations are underway. Very nervous moments for the races. Yes,

:14:16. > :14:18.absolutely, and it is going to be an interesting race. We have incredibly

:14:19. > :14:22.warm temperatures at the bottom. I have been out in the sun and it is

:14:23. > :14:25.eight, nine, 10 degrees already, so the bottom section of the courses

:14:26. > :14:30.really directly in the sunlight, so taking hit. We have just been

:14:31. > :14:33.discussing the best number to have today and this woman in the start

:14:34. > :14:46.gate next we reckon has the best number. Yes, racer no-one, Fabienne

:14:47. > :14:51.Suter. -- number one. The moment has arrived for the fastest women onto

:14:52. > :14:53.skis to ride this Russian roller-coaster in their quest for

:14:54. > :15:06.the ultimate prize in alpine skiing. It is time for the 2014

:15:07. > :15:15.Olympic women's downhill. In a suit or get the Fabienne Suter.

:15:16. > :15:25.Number one could be a good number today. She gets into the groove of

:15:26. > :15:35.this wrath and tough downhill course. -- wrath and tough. It is

:15:36. > :15:43.very shiny out of the start gate. That was a good quick change. She

:15:44. > :15:49.was not dropped low in this section. -- she must not drop low. Getting

:15:50. > :15:59.bounced around. Pretty firm underfoot. It is pretty bone shaking

:16:00. > :16:05.at the top of the course. She has had a pretty solid season so far.

:16:06. > :16:15.She seems to have peaked with her form right in time. A big jump off

:16:16. > :16:23.that tunnel jumper. Carrying good speed. She is driving those hands

:16:24. > :16:32.forward. It is very bumpy. It is Rowley and bumpy. This is the

:16:33. > :16:36.section we fear makes often. You can see the snow spraying up a little

:16:37. > :16:45.bit. This last section is where the sun is beating down. The crowd

:16:46. > :16:59.responding as she races down the final page. She set the pace. It is

:17:00. > :17:07.1:41.94. That is the target. Not a bad run. Slightly slower than the

:17:08. > :17:15.fastest training run. That stand her in good stead. Great slow motion.

:17:16. > :17:32.See how steep it is. The angles they have to get. Some fantastic names on

:17:33. > :17:47.this course. Sounds evil. Jacqueline Wiles, the first of the Americans.

:17:48. > :18:00.She is a youngster. She is a rookie. You can hear her growling on the

:18:01. > :18:08.effects mikes. She is very late in this section. Carrying speed. You

:18:09. > :18:12.must be clean. It is such a long traverse and it falls away massively

:18:13. > :18:18.to the left. The left leg is absolutely screaming by the end of

:18:19. > :18:26.it. Too many mistakes. Plenty of prerace nerves -- prerace nerves.

:18:27. > :18:39.Not expected to feature among the medals. Excellent experience. The

:18:40. > :18:44.girls would definitely have been looking for the warmer weather,

:18:45. > :18:50.warmer snow skis. It is tricky. This bottom section will soft and up.

:18:51. > :18:57.Jacqueline Wiles in her first ever Olympic race, skied well. She will

:18:58. > :19:03.not be challenging for the medals. Fabienne Suter leads the way for

:19:04. > :19:13.Switzerland. The Swiss have plenty of hot razors on the start list

:19:14. > :19:24.today. They have got Lara Gut and Dominik gazing. -- Dominique Gisin.

:19:25. > :19:34.Good crowd today soaking up the sunshine. This is Vicki Regensburg,

:19:35. > :19:38.the first of the Germans. She won an Olympic gold in Vancouver four years

:19:39. > :19:48.ago as giant slalom champion. Not a great start. She has an unusual

:19:49. > :19:55.style. She stands quite told and has a high arm carriage. That very top

:19:56. > :20:01.gate, where she sort of slipped, I think the ice called her. It is

:20:02. > :20:08.super slick up there. It almost looks like they have just thrown

:20:09. > :20:19.lots of water on that first gate. She should enjoy the technical

:20:20. > :20:25.section. Carrying great speed. The mistake that she made has caught up

:20:26. > :20:29.with her. Still in touch. The deficit is now up to have a second.

:20:30. > :20:37.It maybe too much for her to make up. She will come into her own next

:20:38. > :20:50.week for the super-g and the giant slalom.

:20:51. > :20:56.Vicky Regensburg comes through. The first of the Germans. Good enough

:20:57. > :21:11.for second at the moment. Beautiful slow motion. Her hands are

:21:12. > :21:17.a bit close. She needs to get them in front. It is all about keeping

:21:18. > :21:28.aerodynamic in the gliding sections of the downhill. The first and only

:21:29. > :21:50.French racer in the competition today.

:21:51. > :22:02.Marie Marshall RVA is France's only competitor here today. -- Marie

:22:03. > :22:07.Marchand-Arvier. Completely helpless as she tried to control the mistake

:22:08. > :22:13.of the job. Then she had to brace herself as she hid the safety

:22:14. > :22:18.netting. The net is designed to bounce the skiers back onto her

:22:19. > :22:23.slope. She is moving gingerly. I am happy to see she is moving very

:22:24. > :22:32.slightly as we await the arrival of the medics. Upper body twisted. That

:22:33. > :22:36.was a big mistake. There was nothing she could do. It looked like she was

:22:37. > :22:45.going to recover. At the last minute she caught the edge. A concerned

:22:46. > :22:53.look on the face of the French coach. She felt pretty hard on her

:22:54. > :23:01.back. They do wear back protection but hopefully it is not a back

:23:02. > :23:07.injury. If she stands up from that, it shows how amazingly athletic

:23:08. > :23:11.these racers are. To be a good ski racers, you have to do it all, you

:23:12. > :23:18.have to be able to recover from these positions going at 70 mph. She

:23:19. > :23:25.almost crushes the skis. I think she catches the edge. There was nothing

:23:26. > :23:31.she could do. She is staring at the safety netting. That is a horrible

:23:32. > :23:38.moment for her. She hits her head as well. Shocking scenes for everybody.

:23:39. > :23:43.I am absolutely delighted to say, and are very relieved to say, that

:23:44. > :23:46.Marie Marchand-Arvier has somehow bounced back of the safety netting,

:23:47. > :23:56.has picked herself up and hopefully will be OK. And remarkably she is

:23:57. > :24:03.back on her skis. What a recovery. They build them tough in the

:24:04. > :24:08.Chamonix valley, where she is from. There is a great cheer and flags

:24:09. > :24:14.flying down here. The spectators so happy to see standing on her feet.

:24:15. > :24:22.Difficult for this lady at the start gate. A hugely confident racer with

:24:23. > :24:25.massive experience. It is a little unnerving when you know that

:24:26. > :24:38.somebody in front of you has taken a big crash. Words of instruction from

:24:39. > :24:47.the American coach. Fabienne Suter is still the leader. A very nervous

:24:48. > :24:54.atmosphere at the bottom of the hill now after that crashed to Marie

:24:55. > :25:06.Marchand-Arvier. This is the slow model for Fabienne Suter. Next to go

:25:07. > :25:09.is Nicole Hosp. It has frozen overnight. It won frozen overnight.

:25:10. > :25:13.The afternoon. The top part of the course is running a little faster

:25:14. > :25:19.than it has been in training. The bottom section will be slower. That

:25:20. > :25:29.is the scene at the top. Everybody is kind of warm and comfortable up

:25:30. > :25:36.there. They still need to seek a log fire in a mountain restaurant. It is

:25:37. > :25:41.very alpine, this part of the Western Caucasus. The mountains are

:25:42. > :25:46.absolutely stunning. Some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We

:25:47. > :25:50.may get a view of some of the girls with their boots in the snow. It is

:25:51. > :26:06.important to keep the boots at the right temperature. Nicole Hosp.

:26:07. > :26:11.These silver medallist from the super combined gets the start in the

:26:12. > :26:16.downhill following that excellent performance in the super combined.

:26:17. > :26:23.Solid times in training. She was fastest in training number four. She

:26:24. > :26:27.knows there has been an accident in front. She has been asked to delay.

:26:28. > :26:41.She has to put that out of her mind and attack this Olympic downhill

:26:42. > :26:46.course. She has got work to do. Nicole Hosp a little bit ragged on

:26:47. > :26:50.the steep section, bouncing sideways. Not quite as committed as

:26:51. > :27:00.she could be. She is skiing a good line. She is making by little bit of

:27:01. > :27:10.time. Good work so far for a Nicole Hosp.

:27:11. > :27:17.She likes gliding sections. See needs to stay low. This is where I

:27:18. > :27:22.think today will come down to the skis. It would be interesting as she

:27:23. > :27:41.comes up to the must next split. -- this next split. A tricky gate

:27:42. > :27:52.coming up. Not bad. Long, fast, sweeping turns. Ride and glided

:27:53. > :27:59.towards the finishing line. -- glide. Good enough for a second. She

:28:00. > :28:05.is not celebrating or celebrating yet, Fabienne Suter. But she holds

:28:06. > :28:15.on to gold at the moment. Not a bad run. She got twisted up at the top.

:28:16. > :28:35.The back of the ski came out. That is not ideal.

:28:36. > :29:00.Fiery competitor next. Quick changes. A huge flight. As soon as

:29:01. > :29:05.they land, the inside edge of the left ski hat to crank into the snow

:29:06. > :29:11.to make that turn. There's not time to react. That is not the ideal

:29:12. > :29:17.line. They did talk about it many times. You do not need to be too

:29:18. > :29:27.high on this part. You can let it drop down. If you are high, it is

:29:28. > :29:35.slow. The chance Merkel has already gone for Marusa Ferk. Slovenian's

:29:36. > :29:39.with good chances today, especially with Tina Maze, who starts at 21.

:29:40. > :29:47.Then the solitary jump, massive flight, twice as well as we saw from

:29:48. > :29:54.Nicole Hosp. I don't think Marusa Ferk has been fully in control since

:29:55. > :30:01.she left the start gate. She is 1.3 seconds off the pace, into fourth

:30:02. > :30:05.position. Very disappointing bottom section, she will be furious. She

:30:06. > :30:10.has skied discourse for times and she knows the mistake over the last

:30:11. > :30:17.jump will have cost her. She was far too low and then took a massive

:30:18. > :30:26.flight. Fabienne Suter leads, Nicole Hosp is second, Rebensburg is third

:30:27. > :30:32.for the moment. Laurenne Ross is ready to go at the top of the

:30:33. > :30:40.course. Pushes out of the start, makes the first left footed term.

:30:41. > :30:44.Smooth at the top. Ross is also a very talented musician, so when

:30:45. > :30:54.she's not spending time on skis and training, playing various

:30:55. > :31:01.instruments. We have had a few nasty crashes through Devil's Spine. This

:31:02. > :31:07.is good. Laurenne Ross had that horrendous crash in the World Cup

:31:08. > :31:10.downhill a couple of seasons ago which caused her to have 40 stitches

:31:11. > :31:16.in her forehead. She had a collision between the back of the top of her

:31:17. > :31:23.helmet and the top of her goggles. Living dangerously, good recovery!

:31:24. > :31:27.There might be a greater gap at the next intermediate following that

:31:28. > :31:32.mistake. It is not bad, though, very much in touch. And doesn't it just

:31:33. > :31:37.show what huge mental strength these athletes have, to be able to come

:31:38. > :31:41.back from crashes like that, put it behind them and put pedal to the

:31:42. > :31:46.metal. Flying down the last section where it is bubbly and soft. Took

:31:47. > :31:53.the solitary jump well. The chance to get in among the top three here.

:31:54. > :32:02.Laurenne Ross is in bronze for the moment. Some Suter holding goal,

:32:03. > :32:06.Nicole Hosp is in silver-medal position and now Laurenne Ross is in

:32:07. > :32:19.bronze-medal position. What a beautiful slow motion. She is happy

:32:20. > :32:25.with that run, delighted. Next to go, the second Swiss racer to tackle

:32:26. > :32:35.the Olympic downhill, Dominique Gisin, from ankle Burke, who has had

:32:36. > :32:43.solid results all season. Seventh in Valdez area, eighth in Cortina in

:32:44. > :32:52.the most recent World Cup race -- second in Val d'Isere. She is just

:32:53. > :32:57.back. Her team-mate Suter will have given her a great support, we should

:32:58. > :33:01.hope, so she will know exactly how the courses running. A little bit

:33:02. > :33:07.late in the line, it may have cost her another tent. She has the green

:33:08. > :33:15.light, good work in the middle part of the course from Dominique Gisin,

:33:16. > :33:19.gliding nicely. Adjusting her eyesight as she changes and moves

:33:20. > :33:26.from shade to sunshine, and it is getting better. Two tenths in

:33:27. > :33:32.friend. Watch those legs pumping as she goes up and over the bumps.

:33:33. > :33:43.Getting that heap inside the term. She takes it well. -- her hip inside

:33:44. > :33:48.the term. Lots of noise from the Swiss fans as the cow bells ring.

:33:49. > :33:52.They already had the lead in the shape of Fabienne Suter, can they

:33:53. > :33:59.make it one, too. They can. Dominique Gisin is in gold. Suter

:34:00. > :34:00.slips to second. Switzerland are one, two in the women's Olympic

:34:01. > :34:14.downhill. This was her out of the start. The

:34:15. > :34:25.important thing at the start is it the shins that go through that one

:34:26. > :34:27.blast. A power through. The arms are low, aerodynamic, pumping her hands.

:34:28. > :34:42.She is delighted. Next up, Daniela Merighetti, the

:34:43. > :34:46.first of the Italians to go this morning. It has been a tough week

:34:47. > :34:52.for Merighetti, she had a nasty crash of that last solitary jump on

:34:53. > :34:56.the first run and she has had only one training run, so she will be

:34:57. > :35:01.playing around still with the line and, hopefully, yes, she is, she is

:35:02. > :35:08.up, say she is really putting her foot down. Great skiing. You must

:35:09. > :35:13.take the speed through this section. A little twitch sideways. She had an

:35:14. > :35:22.advantage but then a couple of mistakes. It didn't seem to affect

:35:23. > :35:26.her speed. She is drifting up and down away from Gisin's time. Still

:35:27. > :35:31.in the hunt for a place in amongst the medal positions. She did hurt

:35:32. > :35:37.her knee on that first training run but it is not holding her back and

:35:38. > :35:43.what a great run so far. A little bit upright of that jump. Merighetti

:35:44. > :35:47.has thrown everything at the women's Olympic downhill course. She

:35:48. > :35:52.drifted so wide of the racing line. She seems to be out of steam. It

:35:53. > :35:58.might have cost her her chance. It has, she has gone into silver. She

:35:59. > :36:06.made a mistake on a final pitch, and huge relief for Dominique Gisin.

:36:07. > :36:11.Well, after the tough week she has had, she will be pretty happy with

:36:12. > :36:15.that run. It was a shame, a couple of uncharacteristic errors at the

:36:16. > :36:22.end. A little bit of a lack of focus, just getting tired, maybe the

:36:23. > :36:27.soft snow throwing her. Dominique Gisin leads, Merighetti second,

:36:28. > :36:32.Fabienne Suter, who was first down the hill, is third. The next race at

:36:33. > :36:44.ago is Stacey Cook from California. -- the next racer to go. 11th in

:36:45. > :36:51.Vancouver, she will be looking to build on that. That was a very gutsy

:36:52. > :36:56.edge change. She has to make a good move here. Over the tales of her

:36:57. > :37:02.skis, did well to recover on landing. A sign of the commitment to

:37:03. > :37:06.the cause. And then she was almost horizontal. Yes, the outside ski was

:37:07. > :37:12.flapping around, she did really well to control that. It is a good line

:37:13. > :37:19.out of here but not as quick as it should be. The mistakes have caught

:37:20. > :37:23.up with her, then to three quarters of a second, now exactly a second

:37:24. > :37:32.off the pace. So the medal chances have already vanished. Clocking 99

:37:33. > :37:54.point -- 99. Stacey Cook's run has been littered

:37:55. > :38:02.with mistakes. In the end, she is the seventh fastest. The Americans

:38:03. > :38:05.with plenty of chances to come. Julia Mancuso starts at number 12,

:38:06. > :38:11.she was fastest in the super combined downhill. That was the big

:38:12. > :38:15.error. It is difficult it folds away, you have to stretch the right

:38:16. > :38:23.leg out and stand on that ski so early and a lot of the girls are

:38:24. > :38:26.doing the turn on the inside ski. Hoefl-Riesch smiling, she will be a

:38:27. > :38:33.ball of notes at the moment. Already an Olympic champion, this is the one

:38:34. > :38:40.she really wants. Next ago, Fanchini. Both of the sisters racing

:38:41. > :38:48.today, Nvidia is -- Nadia is racing later. A double edge check, not a

:38:49. > :38:57.great start. She has to stay forward. She needs to throw herself

:38:58. > :39:11.into the front. Three top five finishes in World Cup downhill races

:39:12. > :39:15.this year. She has started nicely. Into the Bolshoy reverse, Highline,

:39:16. > :39:20.needs to let it go. She has to focus in and out of the bumps, but those

:39:21. > :39:26.mistakes have caught up with her. Her sister Nadia possibly has the

:39:27. > :39:29.secret ingredient to do well today, coming later. She was the silver

:39:30. > :39:35.medallist at the world championships last year. You know you will get

:39:36. > :39:42.full attack from Nadia. Elena has made too many mistakes and looks a

:39:43. > :39:49.little bit cautious. Had to put them sideways in that tricky turn before

:39:50. > :39:58.the last jump. Dominique Gisin's leading time is

:39:59. > :40:14.next to go, Julia Mancuso, already a medallist from Championships. All

:40:15. > :40:21.eyes will be on Mancuso as she makes her preparation. She is about to

:40:22. > :40:24.step forward in the start gate. Lara Gut is going through her

:40:25. > :40:34.preparations, 18 is her start number, a big favourite. Mancuso is

:40:35. > :40:37.already prepped and set to start. She set the fastest time in the

:40:38. > :40:42.super combined downhill, she likes this course. She has proved she is

:40:43. > :40:48.able to conquer this cause. It matters most today, it is downhill

:40:49. > :40:53.Day. Mancuso charging at the top. Mancuso really knows how to turn it

:40:54. > :40:58.on at this big event, she loves the big stage and if anyone can do it,

:40:59. > :41:05.she well. Practice huge! What a landing, and what a start.

:41:06. > :41:08.Horizontal, fully engaged with the Olympic downhill course. Silver

:41:09. > :41:13.medallist four years ago behind Lindsey Vonn, she has come for the

:41:14. > :41:20.gold in 2014. A beautiful top section, through the Bolshoy

:41:21. > :41:25.Traverse, just lost a tenth, but it is great skiing. Low, dynamic and

:41:26. > :41:31.aggressive. She was fantastic on this flat section the other day, can

:41:32. > :41:33.she turn it on again today? A quarter of a second slower as she

:41:34. > :41:39.approaches the bottom third of the course. Stepping a little wide,

:41:40. > :41:45.seemed to be flapping slightly with her hands, looking for the ideal

:41:46. > :41:50.tuck position. She is taking on an early line in the last two terms.

:41:51. > :41:59.Has she been able to claw back the last time -- turns. Nearly a full

:42:00. > :42:03.second down, too many errors. Mancuso possibly pushing too hard at

:42:04. > :42:09.the top. She will be furious with that last section, she fell into the

:42:10. > :42:16.hole. She let it slip away and then the jump, she hardly took off. These

:42:17. > :42:24.top terms were sensational, look at the angle she gets, the casually

:42:25. > :42:36.drops the hip cashback lookout she drops. Medal today, so Gisin of

:42:37. > :42:44.Switzerland has gold. This is Kajsa Kling, she could be a surprise

:42:45. > :42:50.package. She has had a surprise season where she has scored top ten

:42:51. > :42:54.results in the giant slalom on the World Cup tour. She had a third and

:42:55. > :43:00.fourth in training, she could be one to look at. Good top section, not a

:43:01. > :43:06.huge flight, managed to stay low. She needs to stand on the right ski

:43:07. > :43:10.and she does it. Kajsa Kling fighting her way through the icy

:43:11. > :43:14.section. It is dark and dingy in places but she will burst back into

:43:15. > :43:20.the bright Russian sunshine in a moment and will get better

:43:21. > :43:25.visibility. It is probably too far away to get in amongst the medals.

:43:26. > :43:32.She is more upright than she should be. She came into Bolshoy traverse

:43:33. > :43:38.more tentative than she should be. She needs to be lower, the chest is

:43:39. > :43:42.upright. The top three are separated by less than four tenths of a

:43:43. > :43:49.second. Not much room in the medal places. It needs to be faultless

:43:50. > :43:54.from top to bottom. Kajsa Kling sets up her skis for the final role and

:43:55. > :44:00.glides towards the line. She is a long way behind in the end. No luck

:44:01. > :44:07.today for the young Swede. More chances to come, her best

:44:08. > :44:12.potentially in the Olympic super G. That long outside leg, she changes

:44:13. > :44:20.over and gets the ski to bite. And she was close to beating out. The

:44:21. > :44:30.boot clips nearly hit the snow. Dominique Gisin leads the way for

:44:31. > :44:40.Switzerland. In the start gate, wearing number 14 for Austria, this

:44:41. > :44:47.Cornelia Huetter. Austria's best chance of success comes with Anna

:44:48. > :44:58.Fenninger. Putting those hands forward. A little compression.

:44:59. > :45:09.Straight into the job. -- jump. She needs to push harder. This is the

:45:10. > :45:19.important bit. Stay low. Bumpy through this section. Last time we

:45:20. > :45:28.got a check on the time, nor .32. -- 0.32. Her chance has slipped away.

:45:29. > :45:43.Not looking comfortable on this course at all. It may be just

:45:44. > :45:48.softening up. The last of the gates for Cornelia Huetter of Austria. Her

:45:49. > :45:52.first Olympic experience. No danger to the provision -- provisional

:45:53. > :46:09.medallists. Switzerland, Italy, Switzerland, the

:46:10. > :46:21.one, the one, two, three at the moment. Some of the fastest skiers

:46:22. > :46:33.in the world yet to come. Julia Mancuso in conversation with

:46:34. > :46:39.Dominique Gisin. Carolina Ruiz Castillo for Spain. She had her

:46:40. > :46:45.first ever World Cup downhill after years of coming close last spring in

:46:46. > :46:58.France. She finally won a World Cup race. She is coached by my fellow

:46:59. > :47:10.Scot, Mark Tilson. A pretty good start. She is taking the course on.

:47:11. > :47:17.She was late there. That will have cost her. May just cost her the

:47:18. > :47:25.chance of getting near the leaders. Great top quarter. Then it started

:47:26. > :47:42.to fall away for the Spanish skier. Very unforgiving, the Forest drop.

:47:43. > :47:46.It is in the shade. She is out. She managed to slow herself right then

:47:47. > :47:55.before she hit the nets. I hope she is OK. It is a tricky turn. She

:47:56. > :47:59.didn't stand on the left ski. There was nothing she could do. If she had

:48:00. > :48:07.stood on it from there, she would have been very slow. It has been

:48:08. > :48:12.full of drama so far. The skiers that have fallen have stood up and

:48:13. > :48:17.walked away. Dominique Gisin is fastest. Daniela Merighetti is in

:48:18. > :48:33.silver position and Fabienne Suter in bronze.

:48:34. > :48:41.We have got the fastest races in terms of form coming up next, as

:48:42. > :48:47.they try to untangle Carolina Ruiz Castillo from that first line of

:48:48. > :48:59.netting. They have three lines of netting. Just in case. Things really

:49:00. > :49:05.hotting up now. We have got some exceptional races at the top. We

:49:06. > :49:12.have Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden coming up next. Lara Gut. Elizabeth

:49:13. > :49:30.gurgle. -- Elizabeth gurgle. Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden had a

:49:31. > :49:33.terrific breakthrough season. She won in Valdez air just before

:49:34. > :49:41.Christmas. Some salt being put down on the course.

:49:42. > :49:49.Trying to keep the course firm. These delays will not help. The

:49:50. > :49:51.longer the sunshine hits the course, the softer it will get. We are ready

:49:52. > :50:06.to resume. Tina Weirather is not racing today.

:50:07. > :50:15.We move on to Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden. The winner of

:50:16. > :50:21.the World Cup downhill before Christmas. Her debut World Cup win.

:50:22. > :50:27.On form. She went well in training. See is a very tall, powerful

:50:28. > :50:37.athlete. I said without the other day and she above May. -- I sat with

:50:38. > :50:46.her. Nice and high. Diving down. She has to be quick.

:50:47. > :50:57.Going well so far. A good racing line. Well within the blue racing

:50:58. > :51:02.corridor. She drifted too far. Another one comes to a stop

:51:03. > :51:09.prematurely. No finish today for Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden. Goss,

:51:10. > :51:13.they have really got was sitting on the edge of our seats today. She

:51:14. > :51:19.went inside and she does so well to stand up from that. Athleticism at

:51:20. > :51:25.its best. Abbot of slopestyle action. Dominique Gisin happy to see

:51:26. > :51:34.there was no contact. She stays in gold medal position. I think she is

:51:35. > :51:41.recovering there. That is such a shock. You come through there with

:51:42. > :51:57.such speed. For that to happen, the pulse will be racing. The queue

:51:58. > :52:01.continues to form. Tina Maze looking composed at the top. All eyes will

:52:02. > :52:07.be on Lara Gut, the pin-up girl of Swiss sport. Ready to risk the

:52:08. > :52:14.Olympic downhill. Anna Fenninger, the best of the Austrians today,

:52:15. > :52:22.potentially. She runs at 22. Switzerland with gold and bronze

:52:23. > :52:35.abysmally. -- provisionally. Can their golden girl turn things

:52:36. > :52:43.around. -- you Mac --? Lara Gut for Switzerland. Big push. Couple of

:52:44. > :52:47.skates. First turn approaches rapidly. She has had a cracking

:52:48. > :52:54.season. She has had World Cup went in downhill. She has had three wins

:52:55. > :53:02.in super-g and one in giant slalom. Can she make it happen today?

:53:03. > :53:07.Downhill day in Sochi. Nice landing. Smooth and effortless so far. In

:53:08. > :53:13.touch. 17 hundredths of a second off the pace of team-mate Dominique

:53:14. > :53:17.Gisin. With her team-mates in first and third, it will have spurred her

:53:18. > :53:22.on even more. It may be that you are in the team, but on the course you

:53:23. > :53:27.are on your own. She has got the green light. She is pushing hard.

:53:28. > :53:35.She does not want to be forth. She wants to be first. Seven hundredths

:53:36. > :53:40.ahead at the last intermediate. Now she is nine hundredths behind. She

:53:41. > :53:53.keeps herself in the hunt. Pushing hard. Travelling beautifully across

:53:54. > :53:59.the snow in the drive. She switches on the green light again. 12

:54:00. > :54:03.hundredths of a second in front. It has been effortless, it has been

:54:04. > :54:13.faultless, it has been fast for a Lara Gut so far. Easy over her skis.

:54:14. > :54:22.Fast movement. Note she can set up and write and glide for the line.

:54:23. > :54:28.Lara Gut is second for Switzerland! Silver medal position. Dominique

:54:29. > :54:36.Gisin clings onto gold. Switzerland first, second and fourth. Dominique

:54:37. > :54:43.Gisin has gold. Lara Gut has skied into silver medal position. Holding

:54:44. > :54:52.her head. She skied that so well. It is difficult to see where she lost

:54:53. > :54:55.it. Maybe just the last turn. Maybe she wanted to make contact with the

:54:56. > :55:09.snow a little bit earlier. That was close. Gold medal position for

:55:10. > :55:16.Dominique Gisin. Lara Gut in silver. She will throw everything at this

:55:17. > :55:25.hill. Double world champion in 2011. She won the downhill and the

:55:26. > :55:32.super-g. She gave that control gave a massive cloud. Her face said it

:55:33. > :55:38.all in the start gate. She means business. But sometimes she pushes

:55:39. > :55:49.too hard. Hitting those two gates was not the ideal line. Doing that

:55:50. > :55:53.at 70 mph is not good. She had a good Olympics last time around.

:55:54. > :55:59.Taking the bronze medal in this, the downhill, and in the giant slalom.

:56:00. > :56:06.Her mother was an Olympic bronze medallist in 1964 in Innsbruck and

:56:07. > :56:11.four years before that. She comes from a great racing pedigree. This

:56:12. > :56:16.is still pretty solid. With just over a quarter of a second between

:56:17. > :56:25.gold, silver and bronze, she may be too far away to get amongst them.

:56:26. > :56:33.The next split will tell us. Just under half a second down. She is

:56:34. > :56:42.clawing the time back. Not bad. A little bit low in the line. She

:56:43. > :56:46.needs to be soft. Soft skiing. The Austrians already have the men's

:56:47. > :56:52.Olympic downhill champion with Matthias Mayer taking the gold on

:56:53. > :57:01.Sunday. She has missed her chance. She is ten. -- 10th. All eyes as far

:57:02. > :57:07.as Austria is concerned will be fixed on Anna Fenninger. Different

:57:08. > :57:15.position from the girls before. Standing well on the outside ski.

:57:16. > :57:26.Chemmy Alcott racing today. She will start with baby number 35. There is

:57:27. > :57:31.the leader. The two Swiss racer 's embrace. They are in gold and silver

:57:32. > :57:34.medal positions at the moment. Dominique Gisin, a nervous wait for

:57:35. > :57:38.her. She will be watching the big screen carefully. It is the turn of

:57:39. > :57:46.the Olympics super combined champion, Maria Hoefl-Riesch from

:57:47. > :57:52.Germany. This is the one she really wants. She won the slalom and super

:57:53. > :57:57.combined last time. She has already won the Sochi super combined in

:57:58. > :58:06.2014. See is disappointed that the course has slowed down. She likes

:58:07. > :58:10.it's fast. -- she likes it fast. She was a second behind in the combined

:58:11. > :58:15.downhill. She did all the good work in the slalom. She has to let it

:58:16. > :58:21.run. She is low and late. She is letting it slip away. That may have

:58:22. > :58:29.cost her a medal. Have a second down. Her deficit has doubled from

:58:30. > :58:37.0.24 to 0.50. It may be too much to ask. She will be mad with herself.

:58:38. > :58:41.She knows she has made those mistakes. This is the party has to

:58:42. > :58:54.keep the skis flat, let them swim on the snow. Just glide on the bass

:58:55. > :58:59.section. The time is slipping away. She has found a couple of tenths of

:59:00. > :59:04.a second between split point number three and intermediate number four.

:59:05. > :59:11.The time is having right direction. Off the final jump. Then she can see

:59:12. > :59:15.the finishing line. The black and strikes of the German sitcom into

:59:16. > :59:29.view at the foot of the Olympic downhill course. The time to beat,

:59:30. > :59:35.one minute, is close. It is ninth. relief for Dominique Gisin, she's

:59:36. > :59:53.starting to believe now. Still to come, Tina gaz and Fenninger. --

:59:54. > :00:05.Tina maze. Those little mistakes will start to come back and haunt

:00:06. > :00:12.her. Gisin in gold at the moment, then Suter and Merighetti. Tina Maze

:00:13. > :00:16.to come, she is away for Slovenia. She has changed her coach after a

:00:17. > :00:20.mediocre start of the season and when she switched coaches,

:00:21. > :00:28.immediately saw success, with victory in the Cortina. Mays did so

:00:29. > :00:34.well in the downhill combined -- Tina Maze. She is really going to

:00:35. > :00:41.want to make the podium today. It is great skiing, it is smooth. And she

:00:42. > :00:52.is throwing caution to the win. The line is perfect. So far, so good.

:00:53. > :00:57.And Maze is faster by nine hundredths of a second, green lights

:00:58. > :01:02.all the way so far for the Slovenia. I am loving the language

:01:03. > :01:08.never delete body language from Maze. She is making a great move,

:01:09. > :01:16.hardly add up the tuck. And it shows in the time. -- head of the tuck.

:01:17. > :01:22.Aiming to become the most successful Slovenian Olympian of all time. She

:01:23. > :01:28.needs to be ahead at the next split and she is getting quicker and

:01:29. > :01:34.quicker. I have goose pimples watching this, it is incredible

:01:35. > :01:38.skiing. Not a bad line, a small mistake as maybe cost her one tenth.

:01:39. > :01:46.The flight not as big as she could have made it. Trainer Mays, onto the

:01:47. > :01:52.final pitch -- Tina Maze, onto the final pitch, hoping to break Swiss

:01:53. > :02:01.hearts. Skiing for the gold medal. She is dead level with Gisin!

:02:02. > :02:08.Equal. 1:41.57. If it stays like that, they will have to find an

:02:09. > :02:12.extra gold medal. Belied for the Slovenian supporters. Tina Maze and

:02:13. > :02:23.Dominique Gisin share gold-medal position -- relief for. Merighetti

:02:24. > :02:29.off the podium. She needed that result, such a brilliant run. Just a

:02:30. > :02:35.small mistake on the tricky last turn before solitary jump, but what

:02:36. > :02:41.a cracker. Anna Fenninger is ready to go at the top. Celebrations going

:02:42. > :02:49.on at the foot of the cause but Fenninger is fast, she is focused --

:02:50. > :02:54.the course. The Austrians are off to a good start, having the men's

:02:55. > :02:59.downhill Olympic title. We'll Fenninger have the women's? I like

:03:00. > :03:08.to watch her ski. She will commit to the outside ski. A good start. She

:03:09. > :03:13.has all of the Austrian resources behind her... She has ground to a

:03:14. > :03:21.halt and it is over. She will go no further. And Gisin smiles from

:03:22. > :03:26.behind her skis. She will be sharing the limelight shortly with Tina

:03:27. > :03:33.Maze, who is not yet off her knees. Anna Fenninger's race ends

:03:34. > :03:38.prematurely. Disappointment. So in all of the drama that has been

:03:39. > :03:43.unfolding, let's remind you. Dominique Gisin set the early pace,

:03:44. > :03:51.held it until Tina Maze came through with exactly the same time,

:03:52. > :04:01.1:42.57. Those two are sharing the gold medal at this stage. And Lana

:04:02. > :04:11.Gude is in cons -- bronze-medal position. Someone. -- for

:04:12. > :04:16.Switzerland. Fenninger just failing to stand on that left a ski. It is

:04:17. > :04:23.so difficult in that steep section. You don't see on TV how difficult

:04:24. > :04:28.that parties. Smiles all round for Maze and Gisin. That change of coach

:04:29. > :04:35.and a return to form timed perfectly for Tina Maze. I just had a funny

:04:36. > :04:42.feeling about Maze today. Just had a feeling. Fenninger finding her way

:04:43. > :04:51.down, a lonely ski down for Anna Fenninger. Mancuso there to

:04:52. > :04:52.congratulate Tina Maze. Let's check on the standings. You cannot split

:04:53. > :05:09.them, they are tied for the gold. Just to keep you up-to-date with

:05:10. > :05:13.what is happening, we have British interest in the women's downhill

:05:14. > :05:29.today, Chemmy Alcott will be starting at number 35.

:05:30. > :05:35.She was just saying there, basically, that it is an incredible

:05:36. > :05:45.feeling, what a great race, she said it was amazing. You speak Swiss

:05:46. > :05:57.German as well? Yes. Great scenes, as Maze bent down to embrace the

:05:58. > :06:04.Russian snow. She is on course to become the first-ever Olympic

:06:05. > :06:12.downhill gold medallist for Slovenia. And the tears are already

:06:13. > :06:15.flowing for Dominique Gisin. It is a long wait for the girls at the

:06:16. > :06:28.finish, but two great runs, it is going to be difficult to beat. It is

:06:29. > :06:34.nice to be able to listen into their post race thoughts. Others with

:06:35. > :06:45.prerace thoughts. This is Verena Stuffer. Ready to go, she has had

:06:46. > :06:48.some pretty good results this season but this would be a big surprise, if

:06:49. > :06:57.she was too upset the standings here. She will have heard about

:06:58. > :07:00.Maze's amazing run and it will give her confidence. Everybody knew the

:07:01. > :07:09.conditions would slow down and soften up at the bottom. This is a

:07:10. > :07:13.promising start. The difference between the top three is one tenth

:07:14. > :07:19.of a second, which I think is exactly as it was for the men's

:07:20. > :07:21.downhill. Very tight at the top here at the men's and women's Olympic

:07:22. > :07:45.downhill. A lot of a lot of cutting out the final turn.

:07:46. > :07:54.She is a bit more open than she could be. In this flat section, you

:07:55. > :07:58.have got to stay low, hands near the face, aerodynamic. Still good for

:07:59. > :08:07.Verena Stuffer, she could get in the top ten places here. She has skied

:08:08. > :08:15.solidly. Through the section, smoothly, the middle line. Then to

:08:16. > :08:22.the spectacular conclusion of this course, coming into the stadium. The

:08:23. > :08:24.slalom in the middle, the men's downhill to the left. And she has

:08:25. > :08:50.just missed the top ten, she is 11. A lot of great scenes there, a lot

:08:51. > :08:54.of camaraderie between the races. At the end of the day, you are in it

:08:55. > :09:03.for yourself, but when you are off the hill, it is a nice atmosphere.

:09:04. > :09:07.Back to the start, still plenty of racers to come and number 24 is Mo

:09:08. > :09:19.Winkle of Norway, who had a good super combined, finishing sixth

:09:20. > :09:28.overall -- Ragnhild Mowinckel. She is one of the rising Starts within

:09:29. > :09:35.the Norwegian team. -- rising stars. Taking good speed into this

:09:36. > :09:45.section. Really diving down the hill. But she is late, and a little

:09:46. > :09:53.bit more time will have stepped away. A couple of tenths lost and

:09:54. > :10:00.now it is three quarters of a second, it is a big difference.

:10:01. > :10:13.Getting worst for my Winkle. -- Mowinckel. Trouble for Mowinckel she

:10:14. > :10:25.drifts way off into the soft snow and has to start all over again. So

:10:26. > :10:31.Maze's name showing against number one but it should be with Gisin,

:10:32. > :10:45.because we have a tie for first. Mowinckel in 19th. We just see her

:10:46. > :10:53.landing of the tunnel jump -- off the tunnel jump. It is a very

:10:54. > :10:56.straight section after that. Mixed emotions. Huge disappointment for

:10:57. > :11:04.many, delight for many, the light of the sun. The racing continues with

:11:05. > :11:12.the Hungarian Edit Miklos, on her way at the top of the course. Yes,

:11:13. > :11:15.mixed emotions, it is the Olympic Games, it doesn't get bigger than

:11:16. > :11:19.that and there is so much emotion, so much sweat that has gone into the

:11:20. > :11:23.four years prior to this event and if it goes wrong, it is just

:11:24. > :11:31.devastating. If it goes well, there is not a better feeling. Stivoting,

:11:32. > :11:40.not very controlled as she dives into that section. She had a good

:11:41. > :11:45.downhill leg on the super combined, 16th overall. Her hand in the snow

:11:46. > :11:49.as she comes into Bolshoy Traverse. Not bad at all. She needs to stay

:11:50. > :11:58.low, strong on the left ski, hands up in front of her face. Comes into

:11:59. > :12:02.the flat section, in and out of the shade and son. Realistically, top-10

:12:03. > :12:07.result would be something to celebrate for Edit Miklos. It is not

:12:08. > :12:16.much of a difference between first and 10th, 1.17 seconds, so there is

:12:17. > :12:23.a chance for them to alter the top ten. Medal may be out of the

:12:24. > :12:27.question. Miklos has done well, exceptionally well. The hon Mary and

:12:28. > :12:34.has skied into sixth position and as far as she is concerned, that is as

:12:35. > :12:40.good as a gold. What a great run. She is delighted with that. This was

:12:41. > :12:45.the stivoting. She got thrown around, she has a hand in the snow,

:12:46. > :12:50.but she really went through it and let the skis run. That will give

:12:51. > :12:55.encouragement to the later starters, including number 35, Great

:12:56. > :13:08.Britain's Chemmy Alcott. What a run from Miklos. Sturgis dead the next

:13:09. > :13:11.to go -- Sejersted the next to go the Norway, world junior champion in

:13:12. > :13:24.2011. Some solid results this season, including a fifth place in

:13:25. > :13:27.Val d'Isere. Starting late today. We have seen it is possible for some of

:13:28. > :13:32.the lower starters to make a difference, let's see if Sejersted

:13:33. > :13:37.can. She is going beautifully, a tenth of a second in front. A

:13:38. > :13:44.cracking start. What an aggressive side. The changes on those first few

:13:45. > :13:48.gates were so quick, going 60 mph. And she is up again. This is one of

:13:49. > :14:03.the best runs we have ever seen from this young woman. 800s -- eight

:14:04. > :14:09.hundredths behind. She could get in amongst the medals. The top three

:14:10. > :14:16.are separated by exactly one tenth of a second. The course is still

:14:17. > :14:22.running quickly as Sejersted stands tall and loses a fraction of her

:14:23. > :14:27.time. The gold-medal position is 1:41.57. She is sixth. Sejersted,

:14:28. > :14:43.once again, putting down a run to remember. Another cracking run. The

:14:44. > :14:52.later starters having an impact on the overall running here. See this

:14:53. > :15:14.hill, I it just pulls you down to the left. It is so steep. Ilka

:15:15. > :15:21.Stuhec is next to go for Slovenia. Just a little bit of the ideal run.

:15:22. > :15:28.It just goes to show, the last two girls skiing into sixth position.

:15:29. > :15:43.This course is holding up brilliantly. A little mistake at the

:15:44. > :15:49.top has cost her. She will be one second behind at the next split, I

:15:50. > :15:54.would imagine. We saw Marcus Maher coming down with his bucket of salt.

:15:55. > :15:58.It may have made a difference and helped the course to stay firm for

:15:59. > :16:03.the later starters. We have certainly seen some shock results.

:16:04. > :16:08.They are certainly using the salt on the bottom section. It is holding up

:16:09. > :16:16.much better than we thought it would do. The Slovenian supporters already

:16:17. > :16:23.celebrating Tina Maze's provisional gold medal position, sharing it with

:16:24. > :16:36.Dominique Gisin. And Ilka Stuhec is ten. Top ten again.

:16:37. > :16:48.Numbers 25, 26 and 27 all making the top ten. This next Canadian racer, a

:16:49. > :16:53.lovely story. Injured itself in 2009. Was kicked off the team. It

:16:54. > :17:11.spurred her run to do better things. Her goal was to make it to Sochi.

:17:12. > :17:26.And here she is. Her name is Larisa Yurkiw. She comes from a place in

:17:27. > :17:39.Winnipeg were racers are trained and bread. Injuries have hampered

:17:40. > :17:44.progress. Just of the ideal line. If you are off that line and you go

:17:45. > :17:48.into the uphill section, you cannot claw it back. That is a real shame.

:17:49. > :17:52.I would love to have seen her do something special. There is nothing

:17:53. > :18:02.better than somebody who funds their own programme and works so hard. We

:18:03. > :18:07.have Nadia Fanchini starting at number 30. She is an exciting, at

:18:08. > :18:15.times explosive racer. She could do some damage. She did do some damage

:18:16. > :18:20.to the top positions or she could do some damage to herself. She quite

:18:21. > :18:35.often crashes, Nadia Fanchini. She will give it everything today,

:18:36. > :18:39.starting at number 30. Chemmy Alcott starts at number 35. There are the

:18:40. > :18:45.medallists the way things stand at the moment. Two gold medallists and

:18:46. > :18:55.a bronze medallist as the gold medallists embrace. Tina Maze with

:18:56. > :19:10.exactly the same time as Dominique Gisin. This is Klara Krizova of the

:19:11. > :19:16.Czech Republic. Starting late in the day at number 29. That was not the

:19:17. > :19:20.ideal start. She pumped the hands to get out of the start gate, looked

:19:21. > :19:32.confident and let the outside ski drift away. I don't think she will

:19:33. > :19:38.be fast into the first split. Not too bad. Quick changes here. This is

:19:39. > :19:42.the important gate. A little bit along on the AIDS. Very quickly gets

:19:43. > :20:02.down into the aerodynamic tog. Has to get the legs pumping stopped --.

:20:03. > :20:13.So important to get the line right on the final section. A little bit

:20:14. > :20:16.open at the end. A few little bombs forming there but they are not

:20:17. > :20:28.really playing havoc. The last couple of gates Klara Stover --

:20:29. > :20:38.Klara Krizova over. 20th position. Nadia Fanchini, the unpredictable

:20:39. > :20:42.Italian, will be next. There is one of our leaders on the phone. I

:20:43. > :20:50.wonder if she is speaking to her mum. It looks like a mum face!

:20:51. > :20:58.Lovely scenes. Great to see. So much effort has gone into it. She can

:20:59. > :21:07.hardly talk. , lovely. It is what every athlete dreams of. Next is

:21:08. > :21:13.Nadia Fanchini of Italy. What can she do today? She has a bit of a

:21:14. > :21:23.history in the big races. Silver in the world championship downhill in

:21:24. > :21:26.2013. She took bronze in the world championship. You know that she will

:21:27. > :21:33.throw everything at this hill. This is a good-looking start. A 10th of a

:21:34. > :21:42.second behind. We are on the edge of our seats. These are great turns.

:21:43. > :21:53.She has got to stay low. A great top section. Is looking good Fernandinho

:21:54. > :22:00.French Uni. Not looking so good now. She lost some speed in the forest.

:22:01. > :22:05.It is not fast enough to trouble the medallists at this stage. May be the

:22:06. > :22:12.skis not running as quick as she would like. Downhill is all about

:22:13. > :22:29.the skills and the gliding part. -- skis. Nadia Fanchini is unable to

:22:30. > :22:34.make an impact. They really are tightly bunched, and they? What a

:22:35. > :22:40.tight race today. It was the same for the men. Lara Gut struggling to

:22:41. > :22:53.force a smile in the bronze medal position. The gold shade between

:22:54. > :23:05.Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin. What a result Edit Miklos. Great skiing

:23:06. > :23:11.today. Chemmy Alcott's turn is approaching fast. 35 is her start

:23:12. > :23:20.number. We have a couple of Russians to go. Then Alexandra Coletti from

:23:21. > :23:26.Monaco and Zara Hector from Sweden. Chemmy Alcott likes the course. She

:23:27. > :23:30.has done four runs on it. She has got faster release time. Now she is

:23:31. > :23:35.ready to go into the Olympic Games, put the injuries behind her and put

:23:36. > :23:47.her foot down. Wonderful scenes between the gold medallists. Tina

:23:48. > :23:54.Maze with her mum. What a time to appoint a new coach. Tears of joy

:23:55. > :23:59.for Dominique Gisin. Part of a ski racing family. Her brother, Mark, is

:24:00. > :24:04.one of the Swiss team members in slalom. Her sister racers slalom for

:24:05. > :24:14.the Swiss team as well. A nervous wait at the top for Maria the Dara

:24:15. > :24:30.of, next to go for Russia. -- Maria Bedareva. They know that some of the

:24:31. > :24:35.later starters have made an impact, with some of them breaking the top

:24:36. > :24:45.ten. They will hope for something similar from Maria Bedareva. The

:24:46. > :24:52.first of the two Russians on her way. What a great feeling it is, not

:24:53. > :24:56.that I would know, unfortunately, a great feeling for these athletes to

:24:57. > :25:07.ski on home soil. The crowd going crazy. It is such a joy to race in

:25:08. > :25:12.front of your home crowd. Arms flailing, trying to keep the snow

:25:13. > :25:19.contact. The anticipation mounting at the bottom of the course. Elena

:25:20. > :25:22.Yakovishina, who goes next, maybe the better of the two. She is

:25:23. > :25:27.getting thrown around, unfortunately. Losing the grip on

:25:28. > :25:37.the outside ski. Not looking that comfortable. She has got to push

:25:38. > :25:48.hard. She will enjoy the final section. She is in the gliding

:25:49. > :25:57.section. It is important to get a good line here. We have seen a few

:25:58. > :26:05.of them lose time on this glide. She is drifting further from the target

:26:06. > :26:11.time. Comes into the final section. She nearly got an edge. Did well to

:26:12. > :26:15.stay on her feet. No speed at all but the crowd are going wild and

:26:16. > :26:20.cheering on as he reaches the finish. The Russian supporters

:26:21. > :26:24.rising at the foot of the hill as Maria Bedareva comes over the last

:26:25. > :26:32.roller and finishes the Olympic downhill. 3.72 seconds slower than

:26:33. > :26:37.the joint leaders, Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin. Happy to have raced

:26:38. > :26:52.and happy to have made it down safely. She really opened up over

:26:53. > :26:58.this job. -- jump. The second Russian is Elena Yakovishina. She

:26:59. > :27:05.raced in the super combined and went OK in the downhill stage. Let's see

:27:06. > :27:16.how she does here. The first split, 1:12.03. She is 2.29 seconds down.

:27:17. > :27:19.Not seeing the whole of the run of the later starters. They are

:27:20. > :27:26.shortening the starter intervals now. She looks a little bit

:27:27. > :27:34.tentative. Again the crowd starts to go mad. A good crowd out today for

:27:35. > :27:37.this Wednesday Olympic downhill. Beautiful conditions. What a gate of

:27:38. > :27:47.the ad watching ski racing in the mountains. Elena Yakovishina is 26.

:27:48. > :27:52.Slightly better than her compatriot. I think it will be interesting in a

:27:53. > :27:55.few years, with this fabulous resort the Russians have now, I think they

:27:56. > :28:04.could produce some really top ski racers. Next to go will be Alexandra

:28:05. > :28:13.Coletti from Monaco, then Sara Hector from Sweden and 35 will

:28:14. > :28:19.follow. That is Chemmy Alcott. From Monaco, Alexandra Coletti. She has

:28:20. > :28:26.been racing for quite a while. One of the oldest racers on the tour. We

:28:27. > :28:32.will see her out of the start and we will find her further down the hill.

:28:33. > :28:38.From that clip that we saw there, you see how quickly they pick up

:28:39. > :28:48.speed. The start gate, you look like you are just falling off a

:28:49. > :28:56.precipice. Not a bad first section. Pushing hard. She is in trouble. She

:28:57. > :29:06.slides out of contention. She has lost her ski. She jams into the

:29:07. > :29:09.safety net. I don't think she has come away unscathed. I think this

:29:10. > :29:14.may be trouble for Alexandra Coletti. I can hear some piercing

:29:15. > :29:22.screams. I think she may have hurt herself. That is nasty. You can see

:29:23. > :29:26.how steep it is to the left. She literally went falling off to the

:29:27. > :29:33.left very sharply and into the nets. That does not sound good. Oh,

:29:34. > :29:36.goodness me. The medics are there and they are tending to Alexandra

:29:37. > :29:55.Coletti. Clearly in distress. That is a happier scene from Tina

:29:56. > :30:02.Maze. Bearing in mind the position of Coletti's fall, I don't know if

:30:03. > :30:05.the helicopter will be required to evacuate her from there. We will try

:30:06. > :30:11.and get an update from the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, there is a

:30:12. > :30:17.nervous wait for Sara Hector, who starts next and for Chemmy Alcott,

:30:18. > :30:22.who is behind her in the queue. I think we just heard five minutes.

:30:23. > :30:27.Which is very, very difficult for the athletes now, because they know

:30:28. > :30:30.it has been a bad crash. They have mentally rehearsed these sorts of

:30:31. > :30:38.situations many times but they have to back off now, they have to relax

:30:39. > :30:46.and go to almost peaceful place that every athlete has when they go to --

:30:47. > :30:52.where they go to win a situation like this arises, you just try to

:30:53. > :30:55.relax. So we have a hold while Alexandra Colletti is evacuated. It

:30:56. > :30:58.looks like they will use the sledge to take her off the hill.

:30:59. > :31:06.We will go back to Hazel. HAZEL IRVINE: You never, ever like

:31:07. > :31:10.to see that in ski racing and ten years on Ski Sunday with Matt and

:31:11. > :31:14.the boys, it was always a horrible experience watching people being

:31:15. > :31:18.evacuated from the mountains. We will go back, obviously, to see

:31:19. > :31:23.Chemmy Alcott's run shortly, but we will be talking very soon about the

:31:24. > :31:29.pairs figure skating event, and that will be taking place later this

:31:30. > :31:33.evening. The Russians, all 130 million of them, bonkers about this,

:31:34. > :31:37.they love this event, and have good reason to do so, because they have

:31:38. > :31:44.an absolute stellar history in it. Let's show you why in the company of

:31:45. > :31:52.one of their greatest legends of the sport.

:31:53. > :32:05.That was a performance of genuine quality. Certainly without doubt the

:32:06. > :32:09.best programme we have seen in the championship. Superb performance

:32:10. > :32:21.from the Russians. A standing ovation and rightly so. The title is

:32:22. > :32:28.going to Russia. That was brilliant, in the true style of

:32:29. > :32:36.Soviet pairs skating. I think we will be the best in figure skating.

:32:37. > :32:42.It is a tradition. Interpretation was brilliant, in perfect unison. It

:32:43. > :32:51.is not like sport, it is like a style of life. They have won the

:32:52. > :32:56.gold medal in the pairs skating championship.

:32:57. > :33:01.We have a very good school not only for skaters but for coaches. We have

:33:02. > :33:08.a school from Saint Petersburg, Moscow, every city has a different

:33:09. > :33:14.school for skating. All the world loves a great champion, and this

:33:15. > :33:25.crowd is giving a champion's reception to Irina Rodnina. I

:33:26. > :33:30.remember getting the gold medals. Ten times world champions, 11 times

:33:31. > :33:42.European champions and now Irina Rodnina is a triple Olympic gold

:33:43. > :33:46.medallist. That was very well done. The crowd in the building are giving

:33:47. > :33:54.them a standing ovation and well they deserve it. A very neat

:33:55. > :34:10.combination, look how the timing is so perfect. When I was young, I

:34:11. > :34:16.listened on the radio station. Then we would go on the rink and enjoy

:34:17. > :34:26.figure skating. Everything was beautifully together. They are in a

:34:27. > :34:34.class of their own for me. And it won't come much better than that. In

:34:35. > :34:37.Turin, when we had three gold medals, I don't remember another

:34:38. > :34:45.country that had three gold medals in figure skating. Quite delightful,

:34:46. > :34:51.a superb performance. SUE BARKER: They have dominated

:34:52. > :34:54.this, from 1964 through two 2006, winning gold medals in the pairs and

:34:55. > :35:02.it looks destined to come back to Russia again. I think we will be the

:35:03. > :35:12.best in pairs skating, we have all of this tradition.

:35:13. > :35:17.Yes, I spoke to Irina Rodnina a few months ago in Moscow about the pairs

:35:18. > :35:25.competition and, of course, she then went on to light the Olympic

:35:26. > :35:28.Cauldron herself. So there it is burning brightly behind us. But we

:35:29. > :35:34.are going back to the women's downhill. We will be discussing more

:35:35. > :35:38.about the figure skating, Robin Cousins is on his way to discuss

:35:39. > :35:44.that, but we can go back to events there. Matt, what is the latest?

:35:45. > :35:50.The latest is that Alexandra Colletti has been evacuated from the

:35:51. > :35:54.course via the sledge, the helicopter wasn't required. We will

:35:55. > :35:58.try to bring you an update at some point, probably via the website, as

:35:59. > :36:03.to her condition. I think we are just a few seconds away from the

:36:04. > :36:07.restart of the race. Next to go will be Sara Hector from Sweden, number

:36:08. > :36:13.34. She will be followed by Chemmy Alcott. I wonder if the break might

:36:14. > :36:20.have helped the course. I have seen workers come down, I have seen some

:36:21. > :36:32.more salt being spread onto the top part of the surface to firm it up a

:36:33. > :36:37.bit. These are the scenes at the foot of the course. The gold medal

:36:38. > :36:44.has been shared so far. Those are the scenes further up, with

:36:45. > :36:48.Alexandra Colletti from Monaco being stretchered off. It could be that

:36:49. > :36:52.the helicopter will pick her up. In fact, I can hear the chopper

:36:53. > :36:56.arriving to complete the evacuation, so obviously the fall

:36:57. > :36:59.didn't happen in a place where the helicopter was able to arrive so

:37:00. > :37:09.they had to move her away to a safe point. So, the gold-medal is shared

:37:10. > :37:14.at the moment between Tina Maze of Slovenia, who came down number 21,

:37:15. > :37:18.and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland, who started number eight. Lara Gut

:37:19. > :37:21.is the other medallist, she has the bronze-medal position from bib

:37:22. > :37:50.number 18. I think she is saying, " over the

:37:51. > :37:59.jump and bam, bam!". You speak Swedish as well? I'm just guessing.

:38:00. > :38:06.You did train with the Finns for awhile. That is a tricky language, I

:38:07. > :38:12.can do one to ten. There are differences, she was lapping with

:38:13. > :38:15.her coaches wire Chemmy was being very quiet -- she was laughing with

:38:16. > :38:22.her coaches while Chemmy was being very quiet. So this is Tina Maze in

:38:23. > :38:28.the blue, and Lara Gut in the red. The bronze medal at the moment for

:38:29. > :38:33.Lara Gut, gold-medal for Maze, and there is next to nothing between

:38:34. > :38:39.them. A tenth of a second separating the top three, and that was the same

:38:40. > :38:40.for the men's downhill. It is not even a metre as they crossed the

:38:41. > :38:57.line. There is nothing in it at all. So, it looks as if we are ready to

:38:58. > :39:04.resume the Olympic women's downhill. Sara Hector has at last been called

:39:05. > :39:13.forward, following a lengthy delay after the crash to Alexandra

:39:14. > :39:18.Colletti of Monica so one made until the restart and we will probably see

:39:19. > :39:26.her banging her feet and doing some knee bends. They are trying to stop

:39:27. > :39:30.that lactic acid building up in the legs, trying to keep it all moving

:39:31. > :39:41.through the system. But the last thing you want is for it to pool in

:39:42. > :39:47.your legs and then for them to stiffen up. A last look at what lies

:39:48. > :39:50.ahead. We have 42 in total to race, few of the outsiders still waiting

:39:51. > :39:54.for the chance to race the downhill. For most of them, the first time.

:39:55. > :40:03.Chemmy Alcott is racing in her fourth. Sara Hector is the first to

:40:04. > :40:09.go after the injury delay. She get the ten -- gets the ten second

:40:10. > :40:10.count. When she has a five second count, she can go at any time. And

:40:11. > :40:24.she is away. Starter number 34. Good turns in the top section, no

:40:25. > :40:27.problems so far. Carries the speed as she comes into the slight

:40:28. > :40:33.compression, it goes uphill very slightly, falls away to the right

:40:34. > :40:40.and then you have a big jump. The first really tricky section. Dives

:40:41. > :40:48.down. It is smooth, but not aggressive. It shows in the time.

:40:49. > :40:54.The next script for Tina Maze, whose name is showing their, but we have

:40:55. > :40:55.to keep reminding ourselves that the gold medal has been split so far

:40:56. > :41:14.between Maze and Gisin. Comes up towards Tunnel Jump. We can

:41:15. > :41:21.actually hear the helicopter right now, so they must just be taking

:41:22. > :41:26.off. Yes, Alexandra Colletti on her way to the medical centre. Sara

:41:27. > :41:36.Hector's time is a little distance now from the best of the day so far.

:41:37. > :41:40.Just a little bit of a lukewarm run to me, not pushing quite as hard as

:41:41. > :41:47.she could have done. Lacking the commitment.

:41:48. > :41:55.So she has made it down, which means that Chemmy Alcott will not be

:41:56. > :42:02.forced to wait any longer. And Sara Hector is 24th for the moment. So,

:42:03. > :42:03.next to go, for Great Britain, in her fourth Olympic Winter Games,

:42:04. > :42:26.Chemmy Alcott. Chemmy Alcott in the start for Great

:42:27. > :42:33.Britain. The final couple of words encouragement. Pushing out of the

:42:34. > :42:37.gate and tackling the Olympic downhill in 2014. One of only two

:42:38. > :42:43.British representatives in the Alpine programme, the other being

:42:44. > :42:47.the slalom skier David Ryding. She has pushed everything, all of the

:42:48. > :42:52.injuries out of her mind. A little bit sideways, a bit of snow spraying

:42:53. > :42:57.up but it wasn't a bad split. She has to make a proper move over the

:42:58. > :43:03.last jump. Carrying good speed. Into the last section. In her final

:43:04. > :43:07.Olympic downhill, she won't be pushing for a medal, but after all

:43:08. > :43:13.the injuries she has suffered, it is great to see her back on the hill.

:43:14. > :43:19.She has taken 19th position. Her best Olympic result was in 2006,

:43:20. > :43:24.when she took 11th. She is happy to have raced, happy to have made the

:43:25. > :43:30.top 20 and realistically, her best chance is to come in the super G. I

:43:31. > :43:36.take my hat off to this girl. She has come through so much and to see

:43:37. > :43:53.her throw herself then the downhill, well done. Karolina Chrapek check

:43:54. > :43:58.from Poland is down, number 36. A long way off the pace as we pick her

:43:59. > :44:03.up, near the final section of the course, coming along the flat very

:44:04. > :44:07.upright. A little tentative but looking to finish her first Olympic

:44:08. > :44:13.Games. It has been an eventful women's downhill in many ways, more

:44:14. > :44:17.dramatic than the men's with all of the crashes and falls and drama of

:44:18. > :44:24.the shared gold between Maze and Gisin. Lara Gut looking a little

:44:25. > :44:36.nonplussed with her third position. But that is the way it stands. In

:44:37. > :44:42.Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin will share the goal. The bronze goes to

:44:43. > :44:47.Lara Gut. The first time in Olympic history

:44:48. > :44:53.that we have had two gold medals in the same event. Tina Maze, the first

:44:54. > :44:59.Slovenian ever to strike gold for her country. Dominique Gisin, the

:45:00. > :45:06.28-year-old, the first for 30 years to win this event for the Swiss.

:45:07. > :45:09.They will be absolutely delighted. Very eventful race indeed.

:45:10. > :45:17.Congratulations to Chemmy Alcott as well. Looking like a top 20 finish

:45:18. > :45:21.in her fourth Olympic downhill. A fantastic skier, a great ambassador.

:45:22. > :45:31.And boy, this girl has got, doesn't she? Messier from Dominique Gisin.

:45:32. > :45:39.You had a long wait and when Tina came down did you think you had

:45:40. > :45:46.lasted? I didn't want to look. And then I thought zero is good! Yes,

:45:47. > :45:51.crazy. It was a lot of nerves, a lot of sweat, a lot of emotions. Every

:45:52. > :46:02.two minutes something else. It was lonely. It is incredible. What can I

:46:03. > :46:07.say? It is crazy. You looking forward to sharing the podium with

:46:08. > :46:12.Tina? It is a big honour to share it with her. She is an amazing woman.

:46:13. > :46:18.She is an amazing athlete. I love skiing. This is all some. Brilliant.

:46:19. > :46:25.Congratulations. You started quite early. Where the course conditions

:46:26. > :46:29.good when you skied? It was really good. It was not as icy as in the

:46:30. > :46:41.training runs. It was really fast. I just tried to charge as fast as I

:46:42. > :46:48.could. Thank you. Two downhill wins. Congratulations to Dominique

:46:49. > :46:53.Gisin and Tina Maze. It is the pairs in the figure skating. It is the

:46:54. > :46:58.climax of the event. Who else to share that with both Robin Cousins?

:46:59. > :47:03.We read in the feature a little earlier. It did underline the

:47:04. > :47:11.pedigree of skaters the Russians have produced and the Soviets before

:47:12. > :47:17.that. 12 gold medals. They lost it in 2010. They wanted back? They do

:47:18. > :47:29.want it back. And badly on home turf. Sport for them is education.

:47:30. > :47:38.In 1980, the pairs were the first event. Everybody knew. It was

:47:39. > :47:44.thrilling. We were competitive. She once said to me that sport was

:47:45. > :47:50.education. We educate our sport and our skaters. You teach it properly.

:47:51. > :47:55.If you don't do it properly, you don't do it at all. That is their

:47:56. > :47:59.pedigree. Somebody like her, she knows what she's talking about. The

:48:00. > :48:15.history of pairs event is fascinating. How was it changed

:48:16. > :48:23.after the 1960s? After Irina had won an Olympic gold medal, she split

:48:24. > :48:29.from her partner. Irina was looking for a new partner. They took it from

:48:30. > :48:33.the classical dance point of view into the more athletic stance. They

:48:34. > :48:38.were creating well-known moves and tricks. They made it more athletic.

:48:39. > :48:42.It was the power and the speed. This is no athleticism with the beauty of

:48:43. > :48:53.figure skating that we know from the Russians. It did change the course

:48:54. > :49:00.of pairs skating. In 2002, Salt Lake City, and that very controversial

:49:01. > :49:04.joint goals given to the Russians and to the Canadians. That

:49:05. > :49:10.effectively, that moment was a massive scandal first skating? It

:49:11. > :49:13.was a massive scandal. That aside, you had this traditional Russian

:49:14. > :49:17.style versus the North Americans, who had taken that basic Russian

:49:18. > :49:21.style and twisted it and made it their own. It was two versions of

:49:22. > :49:25.the same thing. Very different versions. You are in one camp or the

:49:26. > :49:33.other. That night they were both different. The IOC gave them the

:49:34. > :49:42.gold medal. The Chinese took over in Vancouver. Going back 30 years, the

:49:43. > :49:49.Chinese skater would come to practice in my day and take the

:49:50. > :49:53.Russians. He was the coach of the Chinese in Vancouver when they won

:49:54. > :50:00.the gold. He is here now with his team. The Chinese silver medallists

:50:01. > :50:03.are also here. The Russians wanted badly. We saw in the team event that

:50:04. > :50:08.they are performing under pressure in a way that nobody would have

:50:09. > :50:15.expected. The Russians of the podium in Vancouver. They got to peers in

:50:16. > :50:18.this event. -- they have got two pairs in this event that could do

:50:19. > :50:21.the business. After the short programme last night, we will see

:50:22. > :50:35.it. Here is what happened in that short programme.

:50:36. > :50:42.Stacey Kemp and David King. Second appearance on the eyes here in

:50:43. > :50:48.Sochi. Didn't start well in the short programme in the team event.

:50:49. > :50:53.They finished 10th and last in that part of the competition. They have

:50:54. > :50:56.to put that behind them. They have had some super results over the

:50:57. > :51:02.years. They were sixth in the European Championships. 13th at the

:51:03. > :51:03.world Championships. Here they are in the Olympic Games again. For

:51:04. > :51:31.Britain, Stacey Kent and David King. A little tight on the landing. I

:51:32. > :51:52.think they made the rotation. No triple jumps. They do have the

:51:53. > :52:04.double axels. And that is what they want to make happen now. David made

:52:05. > :52:08.-- he will be downgraded for a half turned cheat on that landing. --

:52:09. > :54:02.have a turn. Well, that must have felt like a

:54:03. > :54:06.very long two minutes, 45 seconds for David and Stacey. A number of

:54:07. > :54:11.errors. They seemed to lose some speed towards the end. That is where

:54:12. > :54:15.the mistakes came in. You can tell from their reaction they are not

:54:16. > :54:20.happy. No. They will not be very pleased. I could see the attention

:54:21. > :54:26.from Stacey going in at the very beginning. It was tight on the exit,

:54:27. > :54:33.the triple twist. It is building towards that triple flip. You just

:54:34. > :54:37.don't know if there is is an injury or something. I have seen them skate

:54:38. > :54:41.a lot better than that in the past. Very disappointing. A long way below

:54:42. > :54:47.this season's best. I think they know that that is not going to

:54:48. > :54:52.happen. They are not going to be through to the free programme. Last

:54:53. > :55:03.place at the moment. Not what they came here for. Sad to see.

:55:04. > :55:09.Here they come. They secured the goal for Russia before the free

:55:10. > :55:21.dance had even taken place. They won the silver medal at the recent

:55:22. > :55:28.European Championships. Will it be error free today for the Russians?

:55:29. > :55:31.Taking their time settling. The crowd so excited. They have to be in

:55:32. > :55:48.the right frame of mind. They are ready.

:55:49. > :55:58.Music: "Surrender" by Jesse Cook they open with the triple twist.

:55:59. > :56:26.Beautiful. Exquisite. Absolutely perfect in

:56:27. > :57:18.unison. The throw is a triple flip. And she has nailed it.

:57:19. > :58:27.Look at the change of direction in the combination spin.

:58:28. > :58:37.Oh, yes! The Russian skaters rise to the occasion again. This crowd is

:58:38. > :58:42.knowledgeable about skating and expect so much. These two could not

:58:43. > :58:49.have done more. Absolutely loved the choreography, I loved the music.

:58:50. > :58:53.Great split. Makes the rotation. Catches her easily after the

:58:54. > :59:00.rotation but before she lands. Look at his line. Look at that. Glorious.

:59:01. > :59:08.The timing is immaculate. Thrilling. Absolutely thrilling. Surely they

:59:09. > :59:14.are the new leaders? Yes, by a long way. Almost five points. A new

:59:15. > :59:23.season's best. They are going to be in the medal hunt.

:59:24. > :59:34.Next onto the ice the four-time world champions. They decided to

:59:35. > :59:44.convert their very popular programme to the new short programme.

:59:45. > :59:54.Savchenko and Robin sulkily from Germany.

:59:55. > :00:06.They have chosen to open this new version of the show with the triple

:00:07. > :00:32.flip. Lovely through the triple twist.

:00:33. > :02:26.Third jump element, side-by-side triple toe loops. Yes.

:02:27. > :02:37.A huge response from the crowd in Sochi, a brave decision and it has

:02:38. > :02:41.proved to be right. Not only entertaining, but

:02:42. > :02:46.beautifully presented. All of the difficult elements were there, it

:02:47. > :02:59.was a programme that had it all. Throw flip, huge, absolutely huge,

:03:00. > :03:05.and she is very soft on the landing. Easy catch before she comes down out

:03:06. > :03:17.of the triple twist. The moment of truth with the marks. 79 points 64.

:03:18. > :03:24.Not great smiles from the Germans. -- 79. 64. It puts them in first

:03:25. > :03:28.place. While all of the attention was focused on Plushenko returning

:03:29. > :03:31.in a short programme on Thursday, it was these two who stole the show,

:03:32. > :03:35.winning the ten nation short programme competition by more than

:03:36. > :03:38.ten points. It was not only flawless, it was breathtakingly

:03:39. > :03:47.beautiful, and it is one of the great short programmes ever impairs

:03:48. > :03:54.baking. -- in pairs skating. Will it be flawless tonight? The world

:03:55. > :04:11.champions from Russia Volosozhar and Trankov in the masquerade waltz.

:04:12. > :04:22.MUSIC: "Masquerade Waltz" by Aram Khatchaturian

:04:23. > :04:59.Their first element, the triple twist. Easy and light.

:05:00. > :06:48.Difficult variation of positions, reversing the spin to the right.

:06:49. > :06:57.Oh, yes! You feel the tingles, the crowd are on their feet. That was

:06:58. > :07:02.absolutely magnificent. They have established a magical partnership on

:07:03. > :07:07.the ice over the past few years and that was outstanding. I can finally

:07:08. > :07:13.breathe out now! Because halfway through, when the jump elements are

:07:14. > :07:16.done, you think you can relax a little bit, he was playing with the

:07:17. > :07:21.crowd, playing with the camera a little bit, and you take that deep

:07:22. > :07:24.breath, but it is that hair on the back of the next moment, it is

:07:25. > :07:31.glorious. The second half, to me, was fantastic. This was the throw,

:07:32. > :07:34.look at the height on the twist. Easily down, nice and soft on the

:07:35. > :07:41.landing, beautiful extension from them both. The arms even match on

:07:42. > :07:50.the entrance of the three turn, on the triple toe loops. Perfect

:07:51. > :07:59.unison. I think there is going to be another big cheer when the crowd

:08:00. > :08:02.sees these set of marks. 84.17. That is almost five points ahead of the

:08:03. > :08:06.Germans. The gold-medal is theirs for the taking.

:08:07. > :08:15.She is 33, he is 34. Silver medallists at the last Olympics.

:08:16. > :08:20.They dream of being on the podium once again and they are ready, the

:08:21. > :08:33.two-time world champions from China, Qing Pang and Jian Tong.

:08:34. > :08:53.MUSIC: "Lady Caliph" by Ennio Morricone

:08:54. > :09:23.she was slightly under rotated on that.

:09:24. > :09:29.Not so much the twist, that is easy. How far will the trademark loop fly

:09:30. > :11:25.today? Gorgeous as always. There is a

:11:26. > :11:28.wonderful connection between the two of them and they always produce a

:11:29. > :11:32.performance that oozes class. I love watching them.

:11:33. > :11:43.Already slightly off in the sink in the preparation. She misses on the

:11:44. > :11:48.take-off, just about a quarter, so they may get the credit for it. And

:11:49. > :11:52.when you watch the lift position, the leg could be bent or straight,

:11:53. > :12:03.pick a position. Better in the second half. 73.30, still a great

:12:04. > :12:07.score, it has them in fourth place. That is the result as it stands at

:12:08. > :12:12.the moment, with Volosozhar and Trankov the leaders at the moment.

:12:13. > :12:17.But a big score difference between those top two. Sadly, before that

:12:18. > :12:21.miss out include Britain's Stacey Kemp and David King, a number of

:12:22. > :12:24.errors in their short programme, finishing in a disappointing 19th

:12:25. > :12:29.place. HAZEL IRVINE: Robin certainly

:12:30. > :12:32.enjoyed that. I think we all did. One sober and Trankov scoring a

:12:33. > :12:44.world record -- le is that enough, or will it be

:12:45. > :12:49.overturned? They won't worry about the points, they will worry about

:12:50. > :12:53.the performance. They know what they need to do to make that gold medal.

:12:54. > :12:56.The Germans were disappointed, not in the marks that the Russians got,

:12:57. > :13:00.but they were hoping to be in the 80s, to be closer. They can do it

:13:01. > :13:04.but I have a feeling that the Russians are going to have to make a

:13:05. > :13:08.mistake and the Germans have to be perfect to win, but it will be an

:13:09. > :13:11.interesting tussle. You have the Chinese in fourth, the Canadians in

:13:12. > :13:15.fifth, they have given a great performance as well, so I think we

:13:16. > :13:21.have seen the medallists, but it is just in what order. When you think

:13:22. > :13:26.about the feeling you have got when you sit in that incredible Ice

:13:27. > :13:30.Palace. Do you think the atmosphere and the belief in the skaters is

:13:31. > :13:37.transferring to the Russians, because it seemed to transferred to

:13:38. > :13:44.the eyes? They have all felt support and not pressure, and it has been

:13:45. > :13:47.interesting. 2012, our athletes felt incredible pressure and you kept

:13:48. > :13:51.saying, as an ambassador, it is great as people are pressurising

:13:52. > :13:57.you, use it a support mechanism. These guys are going out as if it is

:13:58. > :14:01.a day in the park, a practice session. We have seen the veterans

:14:02. > :14:06.at the sport, then look at a 15-year-old, not fazed or overawed

:14:07. > :14:13.by the occasion. The Russians have come through in a way the no one

:14:14. > :14:17.expected. And the team, how big a success was that? Some people have

:14:18. > :14:22.said it should be at the end of the individual programmes, rather than

:14:23. > :14:26.the start. Where do you stand? I love the fact that it has started

:14:27. > :14:29.the event. I think they should start after the opening ceremony, and then

:14:30. > :14:33.there will be a couple of days between the team event and the main

:14:34. > :14:37.championships. It needs some work and I was one of those who wasn't

:14:38. > :14:45.sure but I am a bit of a convert, and I think a few of us were

:14:46. > :14:48.thinking it needs to be sorted from a technical point of view and a

:14:49. > :14:51.judging point of view. The free programme needs to count for more

:14:52. > :14:54.than the short programme, but as a medal event, very successful. It was

:14:55. > :14:58.enjoyable to see everybody go up onto the podium. Together as a team.

:14:59. > :15:03.We are not used to seeing the camaraderie with the skaters in our

:15:04. > :15:08.event. We see it on a lot of the slope and ski sports, but we tend to

:15:09. > :15:13.be segregated. It is nice to see a team come together as one unit. What

:15:14. > :15:20.was great to see the other night was the preshow of the opening ceremony.

:15:21. > :15:28.It featured, wait for this, the Russian Interior Ministry police

:15:29. > :15:32.force. They gave a version of Daft Punk's Get Lucky. It has been a

:15:33. > :15:42.massive hit here, but we thought you might enjoy this. Guaranteed to

:15:43. > :15:48.cheer up your morning. # We are up all night to get lucky.

:15:49. > :15:57.# We are up all night to get lucky. # We have come too far to give up

:15:58. > :16:10.who we are. # We're up all night to get lucky.

:16:11. > :16:19.# Shoes up all night for the sun. # I am up all night to get some.

:16:20. > :16:26.# I am up all night to get lucky. # We are up all night for good fun.

:16:27. > :16:31.# We are up all night to get lucky. # We are up all night to get lucky.

:16:32. > :16:53.# We are up all night to get lucky. Isn't that just fantastic? I think

:16:54. > :17:00.we are starting a campaign. What do we want? Get them in the closing

:17:01. > :17:03.ceremony, on the main show. It might not be too long before the ice

:17:04. > :17:09.skaters can actually dance and perform to vocal music. As of next

:17:10. > :17:12.season it goes across all the disciplines. You could see somebody

:17:13. > :17:17.getting lucky on a podium in the future to that version, you never

:17:18. > :17:21.know. The free programme of the players starts at 4pm on the red

:17:22. > :17:28.button. The top eight pairs will start on the ice from eight to 20 on

:17:29. > :17:34.BBC Two. Thank you very much, always great to see you -- from 20 past

:17:35. > :17:39.eight. We are going to stay on the ice but this time we are talking ice

:17:40. > :17:43.hockey. It is a big day in ice hockey because the men's competition

:17:44. > :17:49.starts later. In the daylight hours it will be happening in the Shayba

:17:50. > :17:55.Arena, that means ice hockey puck in Russian. Let's examine what is going

:17:56. > :17:59.on in the women's event, two crucial matches will decide the look of

:18:00. > :18:05.group a and that will shape the semifinals. It is the Americans

:18:06. > :18:10.against the Canadians, they are playing for first and second place.

:18:11. > :18:19.It is a repeat of the Vancouver final. Both of the teams will go

:18:20. > :18:24.through to the quarterfinals but the winner will potentially the easier

:18:25. > :18:26.quarter final opponent from group B. Shall we say you the key moments so

:18:27. > :18:41.far? COMMENTATORS: Switzerland are

:18:42. > :18:51.bending and not buckling under the strain. Deflection, and a goal at! A

:18:52. > :18:56.lovely touch. The captain, the defenceman, linking up with her

:18:57. > :19:04.colic to get just enough of a stick on it. The Swiss are on the board.

:19:05. > :19:08.Just below the crossbar, that is where she needs to make contact and

:19:09. > :19:18.she does an excellent job to make certain. She deserved it for the way

:19:19. > :19:20.she orchestrated that entire shift. Switzerland are hitting and hoping

:19:21. > :19:28.right now. This could be real danger. A chance for the Finns to go

:19:29. > :19:38.two up. A wonderful finish. She spotted the move. Look at this.

:19:39. > :19:48.Frosted it into the back of the net, great finish. -- thrusted it.

:19:49. > :19:52.STUDIO: We understand the Swiss have got a goal back, the first goal they

:19:53. > :19:57.have scored in the whole tournament. They were beaten 9-0 by the United

:19:58. > :20:05.States but they are back in this match. In the Swiss ranks, two sets

:20:06. > :20:08.of twins and a 15-year-old centre. Although she is young enough, she is

:20:09. > :20:16.certainly good enough. We are going live to the second period. Good

:20:17. > :20:29.morning to our commentators. Commentators good morning.

:20:30. > :20:35.Muller has been the best player on the ice, 15 years old but a huge

:20:36. > :20:43.talent. The Finns will try to get back on track. They are in blue,

:20:44. > :20:50.white for the Swiss. Maybe an opportunity to level things up. A

:20:51. > :20:59.penalty will be called here. What is the decision? It is just a whole. I

:21:00. > :21:05.wondered if she was going to put her arms in the air. If a Swiss player

:21:06. > :21:11.was Home Free, had to step on the Finnish player and was restrained.

:21:12. > :21:14.She has got her stick and is preventing her from getting control

:21:15. > :21:29.of the park to the backhand side -- of the puck. A power play for

:21:30. > :21:36.Switzerland and a great advantage. They skate five on four for the next

:21:37. > :21:46.two minutes. And that means they can try to camp in this offensive zone

:21:47. > :21:51.and try to create something. One of the twins lasered off to her sister,

:21:52. > :22:06.who fires through a gap, and the goal is there. Well finished out in

:22:07. > :22:16.front. The park bobbled around. Stanz was on the doorstep. That

:22:17. > :22:21.penalty really hurts Finland. Her second goal in this tournament,

:22:22. > :22:24.Marty makes a great play, back to her sister, it is through and it is

:22:25. > :22:32.a kaleidoscope of action as it ricochets around. It is Marty would

:22:33. > :22:41.be shot. And then Stanz in a perfect position to put it in the open goal.

:22:42. > :22:46.-- it is Marty with the shot. The power play proves extremely useful

:22:47. > :22:51.for Switzerland. Stanz has been a strong performer for Switzerland,

:22:52. > :22:57.despite their heavy defeat. She is blessed with offensive talent. Now

:22:58. > :23:04.she is on the board. She is definitely in the record books from

:23:05. > :23:22.an Olympics perspective. So Finland, now, have to see what they can do.

:23:23. > :23:28.Tapani has been a strong performer for Finland so far.

:23:29. > :23:35.Now they clear the zone. That is good stick handling, the shop will

:23:36. > :23:53.come in. We look at the latest goal-scorer,

:23:54. > :23:59.Tapani. No one knows what is about to happen as the puck comes in, it

:24:00. > :24:06.is bouncing around. She puts it in the back of the Finnish goal. It

:24:07. > :24:16.must be some feeling for Stanz to have scored a goal at an Olympic

:24:17. > :24:22.Games. Is there an answer from Finland? Stanz gets locked up, I

:24:23. > :24:27.think we are going to see penalties each way here.

:24:28. > :24:41.They do not like the call, they got locked up behind the play. The coach

:24:42. > :24:44.is a little confused. This is the contact and there is body contact

:24:45. > :24:49.allowed but not body checking. That line is changing as to what was

:24:50. > :25:00.previously allowed in women's ice hockey and what is allowed now.

:25:01. > :25:08.There is, most definitely... I am not going to say body checking but

:25:09. > :25:14.the referee has taken both. They allow it to more and more throughout

:25:15. > :25:20.this tournament. Because they get the stick side, they need to make

:25:21. > :25:27.the call. It is four on four, that means four out skaters, the

:25:28. > :25:30.goal-tender does not come into the equation when we discuss the

:25:31. > :25:33.numbers. That means there is loads of space. If you are a defenceman

:25:34. > :25:42.who is ostensibly minded you can make best of this. -- offensively

:25:43. > :25:47.minded. Muller will replay, the talented teenager. Now it goes the

:25:48. > :26:06.other way, from one end of the spectrum to the other. Villila is

:26:07. > :26:13.now 14 years of age, she was the top scorer in Nagano in 1998. She

:26:14. > :26:17.decided to have children, her eldest is now ten, all of her children play

:26:18. > :26:23.hockey. She decided she fancied coming back in her 40s and she has

:26:24. > :26:27.been an effective player. She is still slight enough and quick enough

:26:28. > :26:30.to make things happen. The Finns are very effective and applied at both

:26:31. > :26:37.ends of the rink and Villila has been involved. They break for the

:26:38. > :26:47.Swiss, what can they make of this? Stanz with some help out there. They

:26:48. > :26:51.good hold on the blue line. The pass was Miss communicated -- a good hold

:26:52. > :27:05.on the blue line. We talked about the defenceman pinching into the

:27:06. > :27:27.play. There is space, high over the top from Hiirikoski. There is a

:27:28. > :27:40.space somewhere. Terho is trying to create something, there is push and

:27:41. > :28:06.shove and the referee has plenty to answer for. This is the play made by

:28:07. > :28:09.the captain. Rajahuhta is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. She is

:28:10. > :28:16.battling for every bit of ice time that she can get. Switzerland have

:28:17. > :28:19.been penalised on this play. I wonder if this is going to go each

:28:20. > :28:23.way and we are going to see another even up call. I think it would be

:28:24. > :28:27.difficult to call one and not the other after that skirmish. We wait

:28:28. > :28:39.and see exactly what the American free does. -- American referee.

:28:40. > :28:42.Well, a power play. Will it be? The referee is try to make herself

:28:43. > :28:47.understood through that gap in the plexiglass. Trying to communicate

:28:48. > :29:00.his message, the coach. I think it will stay as a power

:29:01. > :29:04.play, the coach was indicating with a wry smile how important it was for

:29:05. > :29:08.the Swiss player leaving the penalty box to get back into the defensive

:29:09. > :29:13.zone, as they are currently disadvantaged. There is quite a bit

:29:14. > :29:18.of discussion. Now leaving the penalty box is the Swiss player. We

:29:19. > :29:35.are kind of ad sixes and sevens at the moment. Raselli went into the

:29:36. > :29:43.penalty box. I wonder if she has been tossed out of the game. With

:29:44. > :29:48.her legs. If she kicked out she will have got thrown out of the game. You

:29:49. > :29:51.are not allowed to kick because the skates are so dangerous. I think she

:29:52. > :29:58.is gone, I think she's going to get thrown out of the game, Raselli.

:29:59. > :30:06.There she goes. Wow. You don't see those penalties very often.

:30:07. > :30:12.We await the official call, we will get a better angle. You see that,

:30:13. > :30:27.shoved her away with the left leg and that is enough to get kicked

:30:28. > :30:32.out. The skate play can -- the skate blade

:30:33. > :30:47.the skate blade can do a lot of damage. The Swiss team have got

:30:48. > :30:53.their back against the wall now. They have an opportunity here. This

:30:54. > :30:59.is going to be cleared away. A low range shot, well saved. That was

:31:00. > :31:08.good stuff as Laura Benz get stuck into it. They are right here, they

:31:09. > :31:13.have too many players on the ice. They had a five on three there and

:31:14. > :31:17.it should not have been the case. If we look back, I don't know if we

:31:18. > :31:21.will have a chance to see it but we will see the penalty again, there

:31:22. > :31:27.were five players out there for fin land and only three for the Swiss.

:31:28. > :31:33.It should have been a five on four or a four 13, depending on where the

:31:34. > :31:53.other calls were at. It is an unusual play. Riot hooter was able

:31:54. > :32:02.to muscle her way and an awkward response -- Rajahuhta. They need to

:32:03. > :32:06.get a grip on this. There was a cloud of uncertainty yesterday when

:32:07. > :32:10.a goal should have been allowed or at least referenced to the technical

:32:11. > :32:16.support they have two review with the television screens. You can see

:32:17. > :32:20.the coach from Finland wants some clarity because everyone is confused

:32:21. > :32:25.at the moment. They are discussing this right in front of us. What he

:32:26. > :32:30.is saying is that it should either have been five on four or four on

:32:31. > :32:40.three but it should not have been five on three. He is not happy. She

:32:41. > :32:44.is very strong in her response. I think she has almost accepted that

:32:45. > :32:48.there was a misappropriation of players initially but they cannot go

:32:49. > :32:52.back in time now but they had to accept it and move on. They will

:32:53. > :32:56.look at the numbers ready for this face-off. They have to be strong now

:32:57. > :33:02.as this is a berry tight game and she needs to be in charge. Now it is

:33:03. > :33:07.five on four. We see the 4.30 mark of this power play and there will be

:33:08. > :33:11.an extra player for fin land and no matter how many times they score,

:33:12. > :33:16.unlike the minor penalties, the clock will continue to take on that

:33:17. > :33:20.four-minute penalty and there is no get out of jail free card. This is a

:33:21. > :33:22.huge moment for Finland in this game. These two are battling for

:33:23. > :33:38.third and fourth in group A. This will be really tiring for the

:33:39. > :33:42.Swiss players to play one short for whole five-minute chunks.

:33:43. > :33:46.Switzerland have done well, being down to nothing and coming back in

:33:47. > :33:51.this game. Now they are in the Game 2-2 they do not want to give it up.

:33:52. > :33:58.Even if it is a preliminary round they will want to make sure they are

:33:59. > :34:15.competing. Finland are trying to find some space. Minnamari

:34:16. > :34:23.Tuominen. Michelle Karvinen on the angle.

:34:24. > :34:32.The most important player now will be Florence Schelling. She is

:34:33. > :34:43.world-class. This is the player -- this is the play.

:34:44. > :34:52.They shot will come and a clear away down the ice and the Finland team

:34:53. > :35:18.have two reset. Good penalty killing. The pressure

:35:19. > :35:24.is on again. The Finland team are pending their own ends and half of

:35:25. > :35:28.this penalty has been killed and it is the major penalty that we have

:35:29. > :35:58.seen in this tournament so far. Huge indiscipline. Good play here. The

:35:59. > :35:59.Finland team will be tired as well because the expectation would be

:36:00. > :36:32.that they would have scored by now. 90 seconds remain on the power play.

:36:33. > :36:38.Desperate work from the Swiss at the right times, making sure to defend

:36:39. > :36:44.against woodland. They are looking for the goal on the back hand side.

:36:45. > :36:58.Last-ditch stuff from the Swiss. Having almost scaled amounting, can

:36:59. > :37:09.the Swiss plant their flag on the peak? They have 50 seconds left to

:37:10. > :37:13.kill, they are so deep in their zone.

:37:14. > :37:22.Do not take another penalty now. That is the crucial bit from a Swiss

:37:23. > :37:24.perspective. Florence Schelling is equal to it again. Kira Kosky has a

:37:25. > :37:52.good shot. -- Jenni Hiirikoski. Second this afternoon as well and

:37:53. > :37:54.good finish. Those extra minutes on this power play prove extremely

:37:55. > :38:09.useful for the Finland team. She knows how important that was.

:38:10. > :38:14.The Swiss team were just about to kill this entire major Op and there

:38:15. > :38:25.they find a way again. Finland are in front. Michelle Karvinen comes to

:38:26. > :38:27.the party and get the acclaim of her team-mates on the bench. A power

:38:28. > :38:41.play goal. Michelle Karvinen was actually born

:38:42. > :38:46.in Denmark. She only recently qualified to play for Finland after

:38:47. > :38:49.certain -- spending a couple of years there. She played for the

:38:50. > :39:05.under 20 team in Denmark. That changes the complexion a little

:39:06. > :39:10.bit. The penalty is now over and the Swiss are down by a goal. Do they

:39:11. > :39:20.have it in them to try and create something else having lost the

:39:21. > :39:25.player? I don't we thought they would come back from 2-0 but they

:39:26. > :39:28.have. They could respond and get back into this game. It is difficult

:39:29. > :39:37.to losing a player and I think that was more sort of a momentary lapse

:39:38. > :39:41.of reason really because she was just shamed in the moment and the

:39:42. > :39:42.way she had been pushed down but it is one less player for the Swiss

:39:43. > :39:56.team. Phoebe Stanz skates away and she has

:39:57. > :40:05.a goal already in this game. She is acclaimed as the best goal taker in

:40:06. > :40:08.the world, Noora Raty. Phoebe Stanz is digging. Where is it? It is taken

:40:09. > :40:16.away by the Finns. We have seen so many different and

:40:17. > :40:36.is in this game. -- deflections. Finland are leading this by 3-0

:40:37. > :40:41.thanks to Michelle Karvinen. It is so important is the Finland bounce

:40:42. > :40:44.back after conceding that goal. There are six areas in a game where

:40:45. > :40:55.you can concede, obviously when you are conceding a penalty or during

:40:56. > :41:03.the power play. Those are areas. The power play proves useful for Finland

:41:04. > :41:06.and you have two bounce back. With two and a half minutes remaining in

:41:07. > :41:10.the second period, they need to get out of here again with no more goals

:41:11. > :41:19.against as we look against -- look at this replay once again. It is an

:41:20. > :41:23.outstanding play. You tell every single kids to go to the neck are --

:41:24. > :41:27.go to the net is hard to keep your stick on the ice which is what

:41:28. > :41:36.Michelle Karvinen does. Look at that stick. That is what allows her to

:41:37. > :41:39.put it home. It is very easy as a player to get impatient and think

:41:40. > :41:43.the park will not come to your stick but it is elementary to be stood

:41:44. > :41:47.there with it but how important was it that when the puck came across

:41:48. > :42:03.you just redirected and that was the difference in the scoreline.

:42:04. > :42:13.Another shot came in and that was well turned aside. That is good

:42:14. > :42:15.stickhandling. Noora Raty is forced to play it and does well and gets in

:42:16. > :42:34.contact. What a path that was. She was

:42:35. > :42:36.looking to get it back from Michelle Karvinen but it did not quite

:42:37. > :43:00.happen. She is a brilliant player. Finland are in the offensive zone.

:43:01. > :43:06.That shot was blocked. That is great defensive play.

:43:07. > :43:15.A chip and a change for Switzerland. Good work here from

:43:16. > :43:20.Switzerland. They did a great job in getting out of their own zone. They

:43:21. > :43:21.were right in there, camped out and they are trying to put the game to

:43:22. > :43:40.bed. Noora Raty could get a penalty here.

:43:41. > :43:41.She was driving hard to the net and she got a stick in her face for her

:43:42. > :43:50.troubles. If Noora Raty does not get a penalty

:43:51. > :43:55.here she is very fortunate. The Finnish defender in front of her

:43:56. > :44:01.grabbed a swish -- Swiss player by her face mask. This was a good

:44:02. > :44:04.clearance by Noora Raty. She cannot quite get it out. Switzerland are

:44:05. > :44:16.late and looking to get a shot in and trying to see if they can pinch

:44:17. > :44:29.a sneaky one. The referee does not agree with what she says. This has

:44:30. > :44:33.been a very entertaining one. There is so much going on. Major

:44:34. > :44:36.penalties, three goals, shifts of momentum. Is there going to be a

:44:37. > :44:53.final moment? Unable to beat the goal-tender. 12.2

:44:54. > :44:59.seconds remain. Florence Schelling does what she does so well. On a

:45:00. > :45:03.couple of occasions she has denied them. The puck just came to the

:45:04. > :45:09.wrong place. Yes, she is a left-handed shot but she has to keep

:45:10. > :45:14.the scoreline at three and she does that her team has an opportunity. If

:45:15. > :45:15.they can get out of this second period and into the third without

:45:16. > :45:27.conceding. It should be cleared without any

:45:28. > :45:32.problems. That was a real chance but the hooter blue and she was unable

:45:33. > :45:37.to get the shot on target. What a second session. This game is finally

:45:38. > :45:45.poised above Finland are in charge. Finland lead Switzerland by 3-2.

:45:46. > :45:50.STUDIO: That match continues on the red button.

:45:51. > :45:53.It is a good game. We will be live and we will bring you up-to-date

:45:54. > :45:58.with it later. We have dismissed to move onto. We are going to reflect

:45:59. > :46:02.on last night and the first ever women's ski jumping competition. It

:46:03. > :46:06.is in the games after a protracted legal wrangle. The campaign for

:46:07. > :46:13.inclusion has taken just about as long as the gold medal's favourite

:46:14. > :46:17.has been alive and she is only 17. She is under five feet and she was

:46:18. > :46:25.Japan's big gold-medal favourite. How did she do? Let's find out.
