:00:00. > :00:00.has been alive and she is only 17. She is under five feet and she was
:00:00. > :00:14.Japan's big gold-medal favourite. How did she do? Let's find out.
:00:15. > :00:21.COMMENTATORS: We prepare to go again. She came out of retirement
:00:22. > :00:30.because she wanted to have a go here tonight. A lack of funding drove her
:00:31. > :00:37.away from the sport. The lure of the Winter Olympics brought her back. 98
:00:38. > :00:44.metres, very consistent with what she produced in the first round. She
:00:45. > :00:50.said she knew so many talented female ski jumpers who had quit
:00:51. > :00:55.because they couldn't face the uncertainty of the lack of financial
:00:56. > :01:01.security. And more importantly, the lack of opportunity. She has come
:01:02. > :01:06.back and she has gone into second place, it is unlikely to be a medal
:01:07. > :01:18.for her. Hopefully she has enjoyed her comeback. On this huge night.
:01:19. > :01:23.Watch her unusual approach, she stands bolt upright and then she
:01:24. > :01:30.readily tucks into that position, ready to explode on take-off. Both
:01:31. > :01:34.her brothers jumped, she joined in because she was born at the ski jump
:01:35. > :01:39.and is now absolutely hooked. The Finns have a rich history when it
:01:40. > :01:43.comes to this event. Almost a strong a love affair with the sport as the
:01:44. > :02:00.Japanese enjoy. 10th in the world Championships last
:02:01. > :02:15.year, Kykkanen. A little bit of a wry smile from the 19-year-old.
:02:16. > :02:19.Lundby is next, she wore bib number one in the very first ski jumping
:02:20. > :02:26.World Championship. Here she is taking part in another truly meant
:02:27. > :02:33.as occasion for the sport. Lying in 13th after the first round. The
:02:34. > :02:41.crowd have responded. And she likes it as well. She jumped 97 metres in
:02:42. > :02:49.the first round. This looks better. It is about leaning into the jump.
:02:50. > :02:54.Maintaining almost a straight line down the back and through the cars.
:02:55. > :03:09.Look at the focus on the face -- through the calves. That looked big.
:03:10. > :03:16.Looking up, she hit three figures, 100 metres. That was three metres
:03:17. > :03:24.better than her first round and the Norwegian moves into the lead. The
:03:25. > :03:30.next to go, Jessica Jerome, one of the key figures in fighting so hard
:03:31. > :03:34.for this sport's inclusion. She has sacrificed a lot for this sport, a
:03:35. > :03:40.lacerated spleen, knee surgery, she is a born fighter. Lying in 12th,
:03:41. > :03:45.that is another great one for distance. You can see how difficult
:03:46. > :03:49.it is when they get a big score on the distance, it is hard to maintain
:03:50. > :04:00.the smoothness and the technique coming out. 99 metres. She was part
:04:01. > :04:04.of a group of women who sued the Vancouver organisers because the IOC
:04:05. > :04:10.approved women's ski jumping in 2009, but then it was claimed there
:04:11. > :04:14.wasn't enough time to turn it around in the short number of months they
:04:15. > :04:22.had between the decision and Vancouver beginning. She really has
:04:23. > :04:25.been on such a huge journey, Jessica Jarreau. She should be delighted
:04:26. > :04:37.with her contribution -- Jessica Jerome. Lundby is in the women's
:04:38. > :04:44.enclosure at the moment. This is the sport's first world champion in
:04:45. > :04:49.2009, Lindsey Van. She has undergone so much surgery just to stay in the
:04:50. > :04:54.sport. Arguably passed her best but she wanted and deserved to be part
:04:55. > :04:58.of this occasion. And she has contributed admirably. Just a little
:04:59. > :05:12.way short of what she produced in the first round. Knee surgery in
:05:13. > :05:14.2008, ankle operation in 2012. Her place among the sport's all-time
:05:15. > :05:37.greats is absolutely assured. A little stumble as she comes to a
:05:38. > :05:42.halt. Fifth place. Lundby from Norway is leading, Jerome is in
:05:43. > :05:55.second place. As we go along the competitors, in theory we get better
:05:56. > :06:00.and better. Yuki Ito, lying in 10th place after the first round. Started
:06:01. > :06:08.ski jumping at the age of four, she has grown up with the sport. She
:06:09. > :06:14.sails past the blue line. That indicates the furthest jump so far
:06:15. > :06:22.in terms of distance. 101 metres. And the second of the three Japanese
:06:23. > :06:26.athletes taking part here tonight producing her best jump in terms of
:06:27. > :06:34.distance. 98 metres in the training round, 97.5 in the first round. She
:06:35. > :06:40.is just 19 years of age, there is some incredible composure being
:06:41. > :06:46.shown here. 14 of the 30 are still teenagers, we have had a 15 and a
:06:47. > :06:57.16-year-old. Yes... The Japanese coaches like that. And Yuki Ito has
:06:58. > :07:03.moved into the lead. This sport has a massive following in Japan. They
:07:04. > :07:20.will be getting excited, not just about Yuki Ito but because Takanaski
:07:21. > :07:25.is yet to jump. Line Jahr of Norway. Her brother dragged her down to a
:07:26. > :07:30.ski jump and told her to have a go. Here she is contesting the first
:07:31. > :07:43.Winter Olympic games. Just shy of 100 metres. It is becoming a very
:07:44. > :07:50.competitive event. That was one of the issues that the IOC has. That
:07:51. > :07:54.the sport has to be competitive on a worldwide level. They felt, you
:07:55. > :07:58.can't just have the event if there are five or ten around the world.
:07:59. > :08:02.Line Jahr, up into the medal positions at the moment. Certainly
:08:03. > :08:08.those who follow the World Cup circuit will testify to the fact
:08:09. > :08:18.that there are some high-quality meetings. Tanaka... Raised in
:08:19. > :08:30.Canada. Japanese parents. She has been pretty good in
:08:31. > :08:35.training. 15th in the world championship last year. She is on
:08:36. > :08:49.course to improve on that here. Went over and competed in Japan,
:08:50. > :08:55.felt she owed that to her parents, but then returned to Canada same, I
:08:56. > :09:05.feel more like a North American than a Japanese competitor. A big part of
:09:06. > :09:24.the scene in Canada. She says, high, Canada. Sixth place for Tanaka.
:09:25. > :09:31.Henrich will go next. She started the sport aged seven, went on a
:09:32. > :09:36.summer camp and loved it. Look where that journey has taken her. Massive
:09:37. > :09:48.pressure on the knees. And the thighs. 96 metres. Not quite as far
:09:49. > :09:54.as she produced in the first round. This in the youth Olympics two years
:09:55. > :09:58.ago. The 18-year-old is continuing to improve. She will only be 22 at
:09:59. > :10:12.the next games. No medal for Henrich but what a set
:10:13. > :10:31.of memories to take into her next four year block of training.
:10:32. > :10:42.Vtic brings form and confidence, and that was great. It is quite hard to
:10:43. > :10:46.get these old stomach coaches to smile, but even the Slovenian
:10:47. > :10:51.management on the sidelines produced a big smile there. Vtic jumped 100
:10:52. > :11:11.metres in the first round. At 26, she is one of the oldest in
:11:12. > :11:20.the competition. Incredible to see so many youngsters here.
:11:21. > :11:32.Looking up and waiting. She has gone into the lead. Both jumps over 100
:11:33. > :11:50.metres. Superb consistency. From the 26-year-old.
:11:51. > :12:03.Oh, yes! It looked good for distance, she struggled to control
:12:04. > :12:16.it on the out run. Massive cruciate problems in January last year. World
:12:17. > :12:20.champion in 2011. The 30-year-old Austrian, desperate to get herself
:12:21. > :12:25.in the mix here. She is certainly capable of it and has produced that
:12:26. > :12:35.form on the World Cup circuit. What will she lose in style? She has gone
:12:36. > :12:50.into the lead! 104 metres. She has given herself every opportunity.
:12:51. > :13:01.Insam is lying in fourth place and will know that Iraschko-Stolz has
:13:02. > :13:10.produced a monster. That was another pretty good effort. The coaches are
:13:11. > :13:15.just reflecting on that. 20 years of age yesterday, the Italian. She says
:13:16. > :13:19.she loves the sport enough that she already decided to go into coaching
:13:20. > :13:24.to inspire the next generation of female ski jumpers, as and when her
:13:25. > :13:31.career comes to an end. Iraschko-Stolz, the Austrian, as
:13:32. > :13:36.given herself a massive chance -- has given. But there are three more
:13:37. > :13:57.women left to jump. Insam in second place,
:13:58. > :14:09.Iraschko-Stolz leads, Vtic down to third. Iraschko-Stolz can only wait
:14:10. > :14:13.and watch. Takanaski, can she produce what everybody in Japan
:14:14. > :14:29.knows she is capable of? So young, so much potential but so much
:14:30. > :14:35.pressure. Will that be good enough to put the leader under pressure?
:14:36. > :14:41.She has been better than this many times before this season. I just
:14:42. > :14:49.wonder whether at the massive moment, the weight of expectation
:14:50. > :14:55.has just been a little bit too much. She was in third place after the
:14:56. > :15:03.first round and we have seen her win competitions after an average first
:15:04. > :15:08.round before but the great form that she has brought here has inspired
:15:09. > :15:18.the rest of the field to raise their game and it may not necessarily have
:15:19. > :15:22.been the outcome that Sara Takanashi was looking for. It was a good
:15:23. > :15:28.effort but the Japanese will be disappointed with that. They have
:15:29. > :15:29.not won a gold medal since 2006 and Daniela Iraschko-Stolz knew that
:15:30. > :15:50.that was one of her big rivals gone. She is not sure. Daniela
:15:51. > :15:54.Iraschko-Stolz is leading and Sara Takanashi is in second place. That
:15:55. > :15:59.was not as good as she produced in the first round. Can she get in the
:16:00. > :16:08.mix with the medals? Her uncle was a junior French champion so this sport
:16:09. > :16:15.runs in her blood. The platform was there with the first round. Daniela
:16:16. > :16:26.Iraschko-Stolz leads with Sara Takanashi in silver. She loves it
:16:27. > :16:32.Coline Mattel is in second place. That means she will finish on the
:16:33. > :16:38.podium. The only question is, which colour? Daniela Iraschko-Stolz leads
:16:39. > :16:49.for Austria with Karine Martel in second place and Sara Takanashi in
:16:50. > :16:58.third. Carina Vogt, does Olympic immortality beckons for this German?
:16:59. > :17:11.Anxious moments. She does not know. Daniela Iraschko-Stolz leads with
:17:12. > :17:21.Karine Martel in second place and Sara Takanashi in third. The tension
:17:22. > :17:26.is tangible here. It is a gold that women's sport has waited a very long
:17:27. > :17:33.time to say, but around whose neck will it hang? Everyone has finished
:17:34. > :17:39.now and it is simply a question of the judges marks. It is not going to
:17:40. > :17:52.be the pre-event favourite Sara Takanashi, but will it be Daniela
:17:53. > :17:59.Iraschko-Stolz? Or will it be Carina Vogt of Germany? The drama has gone
:18:00. > :18:03.right down to the end here. It has been a fitting occasion for all of
:18:04. > :18:11.the work that has gone in to get the event here. Carina Vogt!
:18:12. > :18:18.Unbelievable! She has done it. What a moment! Germany celebrate. A piece
:18:19. > :18:24.of history that will never, ever be for cotton. She has to be helped up
:18:25. > :18:32.from the ground and under the most extraordinary pressure Carina Vogt
:18:33. > :18:37.has done it and Daniela Iraschko-Stolz get the silver and
:18:38. > :18:41.Coline Mattel gets the bronze but Sara Takanashi, who everyone was
:18:42. > :18:45.picking for the gold, has finished off the podium. It has taken decades
:18:46. > :18:50.of work to get it here and surely with the quality of the drama that
:18:51. > :18:57.has been produced tonight, this will be a permanent fixture of the Winter
:18:58. > :19:00.Olympics in the future. Carina Vogt is the first champion with Daniela
:19:01. > :19:06.Iraschko-Stolz in the silver and Coline Mattel in the bronze. Nothing
:19:07. > :19:10.for Sara Takanashi. What a night to remember! Here in the mountains
:19:11. > :19:16.above Sochi, a privilege to be witnessing history in the making.
:19:17. > :19:21.Carina Vogt had never won a major contest until last night and life is
:19:22. > :19:25.all about timing. She has tied it to perfection and she is the first
:19:26. > :19:30.Olympic women's ski jumping champion. Having seen what that
:19:31. > :19:37.sport meant to the Japanese, I went and watched their event some years
:19:38. > :19:43.ago, I am sure it was just a little bit too much the weight of
:19:44. > :19:48.expectation on Sara Takanashi's slender young shoulders. She has
:19:49. > :19:52.time on her side. She is only 18 years old. Then this morning in the
:19:53. > :19:59.women's downhill we had history again because we have had a joint
:20:00. > :20:04.gold. It was between Tina Maze of Slovenia and a Swiss skier. The
:20:05. > :20:12.scenes were incredible. 19th place has been confirmed for Chemmy Alcott
:20:13. > :20:17.which is a seventh finish in a top 20 in an Olympic event. That is the
:20:18. > :20:20.best and most consistent performance by any British Alpine ski over the
:20:21. > :20:29.last few years. We spoke to were afterwards. What are the emotions
:20:30. > :20:33.now? You get two minutes to show what you have done all four years
:20:34. > :20:40.and for me to show that every time I have come back from a leg break is
:20:41. > :20:44.worth it. I did not disappoint myself. I did not ski pretty, it was
:20:45. > :20:55.far from pretty so it was fast but I am proud. What were you thinking
:20:56. > :21:00.before the start? It was so cold, I was trying to shove the snow down my
:21:01. > :21:06.back and where I was standing there was a lot of nerves and a lot of
:21:07. > :21:10.jittery people but I had to stick to my game plan and I kept thinking of
:21:11. > :21:16.Lady Gaga and I went out there and I did it. If you had started earlier
:21:17. > :21:20.you would not have had to deal with the slushy conditions at the bottom
:21:21. > :21:25.of the course, how was it at the top? We have a lot of traverses and
:21:26. > :21:29.bare all in the sun so it felt a bit messy underfoot. For me that might
:21:30. > :21:33.have been a good thing because I had less vibrations through my metal
:21:34. > :21:36.lake but I would have liked to have started earlier on just to have a
:21:37. > :21:45.completely even race to see how everyone would have done and we do
:21:46. > :21:48.not have that. Maybe I skied better in some sections because of this
:21:49. > :21:52.often but I enjoyed and I enjoy going the limit. What next? This
:21:53. > :21:56.morning we were training on the super-G and I was loving it. I feel
:21:57. > :22:02.grateful that so my pain is managed and I am feeling great. Everyone I
:22:03. > :22:04.have got better. To finish less than two seconds out on the Olympic
:22:05. > :22:10.downhill when I started skiing two weeks ago, I am so proud.
:22:11. > :22:15.Congratulations. They told me I could speak to you for more than
:22:16. > :22:18.three minutes today. Apparently we got in trouble the other day but I
:22:19. > :22:24.told them I was the last girl coming down so they have to let me talk!
:22:25. > :22:28.How can they possibly shut you up! Impossible but we love it. She goes
:22:29. > :22:33.in the super-G on Saturday morning and you will be able to see it live
:22:34. > :22:37.on this programme. If you are watching us at work, great to have
:22:38. > :22:40.you with us but if you are to pick a day, tomorrow would be a good one to
:22:41. > :23:16.be late for work because this is why...
:23:17. > :23:23.It is the start of the women's skeleton of course and we also have
:23:24. > :23:27.the ski slope style for men and James Woods, we hear, has completed
:23:28. > :23:31.three training runs today. He had been suffering from hip injury but
:23:32. > :23:38.he seems to be OK. He did not push it today. He is clearly saving his
:23:39. > :23:41.best for tomorrow. We have Shelley Rudman and Lizzy Yarnold. Lizzie
:23:42. > :23:46.Yarnold is coming in as the world number one and she has posted four
:23:47. > :23:50.of the five best times in training on the sliding up there in the
:23:51. > :23:55.mountains. Fingers crossed for that. Skeleton has been a source of
:23:56. > :23:59.riches for Great Britain's medal chances over the years. Every time
:24:00. > :24:03.it has been in the Olympics we have won a medal. It culminated last
:24:04. > :24:10.round -- the last time around in Vancouver.
:24:11. > :24:18.Skeleton athletes maybe have a little screw loose. I do not know.
:24:19. > :24:28.Are we fearless? No, we are brave. I think you learn to control the fear.
:24:29. > :24:37.In 2002 I remember watching the skeleton race, watching Team GB get
:24:38. > :24:42.the bronze medal. I took myself down to the bottom of the playing fields
:24:43. > :24:45.at Bath University and there is a special push track which skeleton
:24:46. > :24:52.bobsleigh can practice just the start. I started on the ice for the
:24:53. > :24:56.first time in October 2002. I did not love it to begin with. I
:24:57. > :25:01.remember the first run you do not know what to expect or what to feel.
:25:02. > :25:05.I did not know whether to laugh or cry or do whatever and the second
:25:06. > :25:11.time I did burst into tears but I had to hide because I did not want
:25:12. > :25:14.to look like a whimper. That addiction to wanting to become
:25:15. > :25:22.better and better just happened and then I did not want to stop. The
:25:23. > :25:25.Olympics in Turin in 2006, there was only one place for a girl to go so
:25:26. > :25:32.there was always a battle over who would take the place. I did not get
:25:33. > :25:40.to go. It fed me this fire in my beret -- belly. I was never going to
:25:41. > :25:44.watch another Olympics, I was going to be competing. I became obsessed,
:25:45. > :25:50.every decision every day was made on whether it would help me get to the
:25:51. > :25:55.Olympics. In Vancouver, when I heard I had a place and I was going, it
:25:56. > :26:00.was unbelievable. It was a dream come true. All of that hard work and
:26:01. > :26:04.suddenly you were a part of the team. I remember collecting all the
:26:05. > :26:07.kids and having my parents and my grandma around an opening it all up
:26:08. > :26:16.and it was like Christmas Day times 1 million. The Olympic race is so
:26:17. > :26:28.hard to remember. It seems like it was over in. I had just had a quiet
:26:29. > :26:32.confidence that if I did everything consistently and I knew I had worked
:26:33. > :26:36.so hard over the last four years and it was all coming together exactly
:26:37. > :26:41.how I wanted it to on that one day. She has done half the job now on the
:26:42. > :26:45.way to the gold medal... There was so much pressure. I wanted it so
:26:46. > :26:50.badly. I remember before my final run being in the changing room all
:26:51. > :26:54.on my own and not a single soul and I had to stand out on the start line
:26:55. > :27:02.thinking, this is it, this is for the gold medal and then I just had
:27:03. > :27:11.to slide. Amy Williams, going for gold for Great Britain. Amy Williams
:27:12. > :27:13.could become Olympic champion. Surely it is gold for Great Britain!
:27:14. > :27:24.Oh, yes! I hugged my coach who was hugging me
:27:25. > :27:28.and then I had to whisper in his ear, where did I come? And then he
:27:29. > :27:41.whispered that I was the Olympic champion and I did not know what to
:27:42. > :27:45.do! It was a really special moment. Lizzie will be sliding and hoping to
:27:46. > :27:49.emulate the achievements of Amy Williams, as will Shelley Rudman,
:27:50. > :27:53.the silver bullet she was called when she slipped to silver in Turin.
:27:54. > :27:58.So much to look forward to in the next couple of days. We have two
:27:59. > :28:03.runs tomorrow morning and are deciding to will be on Friday. There
:28:04. > :28:06.is plenty to go on that and it is great to have Amy Williams as part
:28:07. > :28:11.of our team here and she will industrial authority and class and
:28:12. > :28:15.insight into what is going into the minds of these athletes as they take
:28:16. > :28:21.that run on. It is a beautiful day here in Sochi. I hear it is 20
:28:22. > :28:25.degrees outside. I have seen shorts and T-shirts outside! What is going
:28:26. > :28:31.on here? If you want some cool, you have got to head to the ice cube
:28:32. > :28:35.centre where the curling events are taking place. That is where we will
:28:36. > :28:39.find Jackie Lockhart and Steve Cram. They are there because it is a big
:28:40. > :28:45.day for the great British curlers. There they are. We will start with
:28:46. > :28:49.Eve Muirhead and the team of women. How much will victory over the
:28:50. > :28:56.United States do for them? A record breaking and! Seven! Yes, that was
:28:57. > :29:00.really fantastic last night. The girls came out a lot more confident
:29:01. > :29:05.than they have done the day before. They brought their a game last
:29:06. > :29:09.night. I undoubtedly the USA girls did not perform very well but our
:29:10. > :29:14.girls, without question, played exceptionally well and they will
:29:15. > :29:18.need to play well because this is a big game tomorrow. That will have
:29:19. > :29:22.given them some extra comfort because of that seven end so they
:29:23. > :29:27.will have a boost and some confidence today. Seven shots in one
:29:28. > :29:33.end is an Olympic record but in terms of standard of this level,
:29:34. > :29:38.doesn't happen very often even in a world or European Championships? No,
:29:39. > :29:43.that does not happen very often. I told Steve that he would not see
:29:44. > :29:46.that very often. I was extremely disappointed by the US girls and
:29:47. > :29:51.their strategy yesterday. Sometimes when you play a very aggressive game
:29:52. > :29:55.and there are a lot of stones in play you need a bailout clause. They
:29:56. > :30:00.should have hit some of those stones early on to prevent a score like
:30:01. > :30:05.that, I am not sure what she was thinking but a great result for us
:30:06. > :30:13.to get a severed. Indeed. Now it is Canada and this is going to be quite
:30:14. > :30:17.a match. What is at stake? Is The Canadians have been playing very
:30:18. > :30:23.well, they are undefeated. Switzerland are also undefeated.
:30:24. > :30:26.This is a very good Canadian team. The skipper, Jennifer Jones, has
:30:27. > :30:31.been shooting the lights out, she has been well backed up, they have
:30:32. > :30:39.been scoring high percentages. Two big wins against Sweden in
:30:40. > :30:45.particular. It was anaphylactic -- and emphatic win. You could just
:30:46. > :30:51.tell, it wasn't just the seven yesterday, it was Olympic record in
:30:52. > :30:55.terms of the score, they just looked better from the start. They came out
:30:56. > :31:01.with a different demeanour, the confidence was there, they took the
:31:02. > :31:05.game to the Americans. Yes, they played too early and they did not
:31:06. > :31:10.respond. I think the Canadians will want to play there fairly aggressive
:31:11. > :31:14.game. We want to see the Eve Muirhead that we saw yesterday, not
:31:15. > :31:18.on day one. The other three have played well in both games. Eve
:31:19. > :31:24.Muirhead admits she was not quite there. A big game, it would be great
:31:25. > :31:33.to go to -1 and take one of the Canadians. -- to go 2-1. I have a
:31:34. > :31:41.bit information and you will know this, Jackie. The last time they
:31:42. > :31:43.met, Eve Muirhead beat Jennifer Jones's well-2 Intercontinental cup
:31:44. > :31:55.in January. That has surely got to have a big impact -- Jennifer Jones
:31:56. > :32:02.12-2 in a Continental cup. She did come off again yesterday with a 100%
:32:03. > :32:07.record which you don't often see at this level. I am sure they are both
:32:08. > :32:12.up for this game. I am sure they are, I just heard the pipes. We
:32:13. > :32:16.should tell you, this is a pretty standard feature in curling because
:32:17. > :32:20.of the ancient nature of the game. Having been invented in Scotland, it
:32:21. > :32:26.tends to happen in most of the events. The competitors are piped
:32:27. > :32:31.in. We understand it is a pipe band from Moscow who are doing the
:32:32. > :32:35.honours in Sochi. How will it go today? It is a big match against the
:32:36. > :32:44.Canadians. Let's get underway. COMMENTATORS: Thanks very much. It
:32:45. > :32:47.couldn't really be a big match. It may be repeated later on in the
:32:48. > :32:56.semifinals, or the final Indies, you certainly hope so. -- final indeed.
:32:57. > :33:06.OK, it is the round robin, you want to get as many wins as possible. It
:33:07. > :33:11.was always going to be a tough start for Great Britain, playing Sweden
:33:12. > :33:17.and Canada. It was crucial to get a win on the board. If they lost to
:33:18. > :33:22.Canada and to Sweden, two of the other fancied teams, that would not
:33:23. > :33:26.be considered disastrous. But it would be great to come away with a
:33:27. > :33:32.win here. Kaitlyn Lawes playing third, she has been playing very
:33:33. > :33:37.well. Dawn McEwen with Jill Officer, the four who are very
:33:38. > :33:40.experienced. This Jennifer Jones team had to come through very
:33:41. > :33:46.difficult qualifying that the Canadians have for limbic selection.
:33:47. > :33:50.Whereas with -- for Olympic selection. Whereas with Eve
:33:51. > :33:58.Muirhead, it has been building this team over four years. Beating Sweden
:33:59. > :34:04.in the world Championships in spring, they met them again in the
:34:05. > :34:11.European Championships. Having had a great record, they were beaten on
:34:12. > :34:18.the final occasion. It is a big day, a big afternoon, a big crowd. An
:34:19. > :34:27.enthusiastic Russian crowd. The Russians are receiving the support
:34:28. > :34:31.of the majority of the crowd. On sheet a is the Great Britain versus
:34:32. > :34:38.Canada match and Dawn McEwen playing first. Eve Muirhead has been drawing
:34:39. > :34:43.very well. I know some of you have been watching the curling all
:34:44. > :34:47.along, some may be watching it for the first time. Before the
:34:48. > :34:51.competition gets underway, to ascertain who receives the hammer,
:34:52. > :34:56.you can see the yellow arrow against Great Britain. That means you have
:34:57. > :35:03.lost on advantage in the first end. -- last on. They have a draw before
:35:04. > :35:07.they get underway. Eve Muirhead has been pretty much perfect every time.
:35:08. > :35:11.She was closer than the Canadian skip and Britain have the hammer,
:35:12. > :35:22.the last end advantage. When we spoke to the girls when they
:35:23. > :35:28.came off the ice yesterday, they were obviously bubbling a little
:35:29. > :35:35.bit. I didn't ask Eve Muirhead if they had a bit of a chat after the
:35:36. > :35:40.match against Sweden -- I did ask. She admitted they sat down, it
:35:41. > :35:43.probably shone through that she accepted the fact she had not played
:35:44. > :35:47.as well. The other three had played pretty well against Sweden and it
:35:48. > :35:52.was probably Eve Muirhead who gave herself a talking to as much as
:35:53. > :35:57.anybody else. I think so. The goals have come here with a support staff.
:35:58. > :36:06.They use video analysis -- b-girls have come here. -- the girls. You
:36:07. > :36:12.can't hide from any of the footage. You would see -- she would have seen
:36:13. > :36:15.she was not performing and the rest of the girls wear. It is good that
:36:16. > :36:21.they can use this analysis to reassess where they are going. They
:36:22. > :36:28.came out yesterday and performed a much better game. I think both teams
:36:29. > :36:31.here know that they can beat each other and it is just whether they
:36:32. > :36:37.bring their capital letter a game to the match.
:36:38. > :36:52.We have seen a couple of tentative first ends. David Murdoch, we noted,
:36:53. > :36:57.was more aggressive from the beginning. With the women's team
:36:58. > :37:01.come of this sort of tactic. Canada seem to want to come out and almost
:37:02. > :37:07.start attacking from the start. Do you think we will see something
:37:08. > :37:09.similar? Very much so. Eve Muirhead and Jennifer Jones like the
:37:10. > :37:15.offensive game, they like to be aggressive, they like to have lots
:37:16. > :37:19.of stones in play. It is the first end, they have ten minutes practice
:37:20. > :37:24.before they come on. When the match goes, it is right into it. Eve
:37:25. > :37:29.Muirhead played very similar tactics in the European challenge in
:37:30. > :37:33.December. And they won every single game of the round robin.
:37:34. > :37:39.Unfortunately they lost the last game on the final. I think they will
:37:40. > :37:47.keep to the strategy they are using. The goals are performing very well.
:37:48. > :37:54.-- the girls are performing very well.
:37:55. > :38:24.They can make a commitment now. The funding that the Great Britain team
:38:25. > :38:29.have, both the men and the women. It is a sport we have won medals in in
:38:30. > :38:35.the past. The programme is very much geared towards the Olympic
:38:36. > :38:38.programme, winning an Olympic medal. It is about a commitment that you
:38:39. > :38:47.have to make. Not just the training. Moving house, sometimes.
:38:48. > :38:55.They are pretty much full-time curlers. They spend a lot of time in
:38:56. > :39:00.competition, particularly Canada. A lot of non-championship conditions
:39:01. > :39:04.over there. There is a lot of travel involved. It means you have got to
:39:05. > :39:14.get to know each other on and off the rink and get to know each
:39:15. > :39:27.the girls help that very well. As you can see, we have three Great
:39:28. > :39:36.Britain stones in the house and one Canadian. We are only lying one shot
:39:37. > :39:43.at the moment. The Yellowstone that you see closest to the centre of the
:39:44. > :39:51.rings. Kaitlyn Lawes, the newest member of this Jennifer Jones team,
:39:52. > :39:56.she joined in 2010-11. She has been playing very well indeed. She is a
:39:57. > :40:02.good addition to their team. She is a pretty good foil... It is great
:40:03. > :40:07.for Jennifer Jones to have someone like her playing as well as she is
:40:08. > :40:12.in third, to allow Jennifer Jones... She was very impressive
:40:13. > :40:16.yesterday but I think the whole team playing well, it helps the skip
:40:17. > :40:21.enormously if the shots are being set up, the end is being set up in a
:40:22. > :40:27.way that enables her to play her shots. Jennifer, several years ago,
:40:28. > :40:39.decided to have a look at a rink and change some of the players and
:40:40. > :40:43.brought Kaitlyn in. She is probably similar age to Eve but she has
:40:44. > :40:56.brought some strength and determination. A little error from
:40:57. > :41:01.an Anna Sloan, it has maybe jammed onto the Canadian stone. This is
:41:02. > :41:07.what we want to see through this game. -- what we are going to see.
:41:08. > :41:12.One error and it will completely change the end. We were lying three
:41:13. > :41:16.yellow stones in the house and all of a sudden it will be three
:41:17. > :41:21.against. Anna had a couple yesterday, it was a good performance
:41:22. > :41:26.from the British team. She had a couple, I remember one later in the
:41:27. > :41:31.game, a particular badness. Generally speaking she has been
:41:32. > :41:40.playing pretty well. It is the first end, it is early, she probably
:41:41. > :41:45.doesn't need to allow it to affect. Britain have the hammer here. The
:41:46. > :41:50.object is if you have the last stone advantage, to try to score two. If
:41:51. > :41:54.you have to score one, fair enough, occasionally you blankly end. You
:41:55. > :42:01.retain the hammer into the next end if there is no score. The last thing
:42:02. > :42:06.they want to do is give away a steel at the very beginning. A slightly
:42:07. > :42:14.better shot would have rolled in behind the Reds. The girls were
:42:15. > :42:18.waiting to see if the draw will take a break and take the turn it was
:42:19. > :42:20.looking for, so we could get an inside role and role in behind the
:42:21. > :42:30.two v if they are to Chevy you won't get
:42:31. > :42:47.the Jones, a former world champion from
:42:48. > :42:58.Winnipeg. After failing to make the Olympic team in 2006 and 2010,
:42:59. > :43:05.finally getting her chance. She is a very popular skip back in Canada.
:43:06. > :43:10.You were saying about how she even seems to have been adopting a bit of
:43:11. > :43:17.the flamboyant see of the men's team -- flamboyant nature of the men's
:43:18. > :43:23.team that she has not been known for. Jennifer Jones has played every
:43:24. > :43:26.shot in the book. I think she has waited so long to get to this
:43:27. > :43:32.championship, she is not going to let anything get in her way. She has
:43:33. > :43:38.actually changed her personality, she used to be very quiet and didn't
:43:39. > :43:45.say too much. During the Olympic trials in Canada she was high-fiving
:43:46. > :43:49.and pumping the air. She had a baby very young and often that can change
:43:50. > :43:55.your whole perception on life. I think it has for the better for
:43:56. > :44:00.Jennifer. A 14-month-old daughter, 39 years of age, Jenny Jones. Maybe
:44:01. > :44:08.a slightly different perspective on life. She is absolutely here to win
:44:09. > :44:10.this competition. There is a lot of expectation in Canada as far as this
:44:11. > :44:17.sport is concerned. The men are struggling. It has been two wins for
:44:18. > :44:22.Jennifer Jones. This will be a tough match for Great Britain. They will
:44:23. > :44:31.want a good start. A good shot from Eve Muirhead, trying to take out
:44:32. > :44:34.'s. -- out two. The stone was hanging a bit high, the girls will
:44:35. > :44:43.have to be careful with the choices of line they are taking. She has
:44:44. > :44:48.moved that operate out of the house and moved these two into the house
:44:49. > :44:53.so as long as Eve can see a way into the four foot we still have the
:44:54. > :44:59.hammer, the last stone, to try and knock out the Canadian reds that are
:45:00. > :45:04.in the house. Jennifer Jones, of course, will be hoping to God
:45:05. > :45:13.please. Probably somewhere on the centre line. He has been drawing
:45:14. > :45:17.very well all the way through. It is just those shots that sometimes do
:45:18. > :45:23.not come out as she would wish. It has not been working out exactly for
:45:24. > :45:29.her. She does like the big shots. Nine times out of ten Eve will pull
:45:30. > :45:33.them off. She likes playing on perfect international ice and this
:45:34. > :45:35.is very good out here but it is very weight dependent and it is not quite
:45:36. > :45:54.the same all across the sheet. Jennifer Jones is trying to put a
:45:55. > :46:04.guard up to protect those two stones in the house. This needs to turn a
:46:05. > :46:10.little bit, it is starting to now. It is quite long though. It is a
:46:11. > :46:17.little bit high adventure would have hoped for. That would have given
:46:18. > :46:21.even a draw. She has to bite the one foot which is the centre of the
:46:22. > :46:27.rings there. As we said earlier she has been drawing very well. Her draw
:46:28. > :46:36.shot challenge has made the one foot every single time.
:46:37. > :46:46.Eve will just want to pull a short right down here. That will hopefully
:46:47. > :46:50.get one right on the button. It is a fairly straightforward shot but I
:46:51. > :46:54.can tell you that on numerous occasions, and if you saw the Great
:46:55. > :47:03.Britain men against Germany, you will see a straightforward draw in
:47:04. > :47:06.that you can do 95 times out of a hundred can be different in the
:47:07. > :47:11.Olympics. These are the bread and butter shots that will win or lose
:47:12. > :47:16.the games. I think she quite likes this. They are working it and
:47:17. > :47:24.bringing it all the way in. The girls are digging in hard here. It
:47:25. > :47:30.needs to get past that read. That just slightly over curls there. That
:47:31. > :47:35.is a steal for Canada, just the one now. Not the best of starts but it
:47:36. > :47:40.is very early on. What we are seeing already is that this Canadian team
:47:41. > :47:44.have started as they left off in their last match, all playing very
:47:45. > :47:52.well indeed, particularly the skip, backed up well by Kaitlyn Lawes. I
:47:53. > :48:00.guess even her team will say that they let them in there. There were a
:48:01. > :48:03.couple of shots that Anna Sloan did not play as well as she could have
:48:04. > :48:15.done there and that opened things up. We had our chances but we just
:48:16. > :48:19.have to remain positive the hammer is retained by Great Britain. They
:48:20. > :48:26.did not score with a hammer there and Canada are taking the steel as
:48:27. > :48:31.we move into the second end. You and I were in here yesterday when Russia
:48:32. > :48:35.was playing and their skip had an empty house with only one of her own
:48:36. > :48:39.stones in there. She just had to draw into there to take a two and
:48:40. > :48:42.tie the match up in the last end. As soon as she let go of it you knew it
:48:43. > :48:48.was not stopping anywhere and it would have carried out out of the
:48:49. > :48:56.ice cube if it had not had a brush # bus at the end. Sometimes things
:48:57. > :48:59.like that happen. You have to do definitely take control of your
:49:00. > :49:03.adrenaline. Handling nerves is definitely a part of the game. You
:49:04. > :49:14.have to always remain calm and alert. Definitely, without question,
:49:15. > :49:18.if you are drawing, a you have two highly capable sweepers either side
:49:19. > :49:24.of you who would be happy if you laid the stone just a tad light. All
:49:25. > :49:32.of their sweeping efforts can take the stone at least six or 12 feet
:49:33. > :49:33.further. That is a corner guard being
