:00:45. > :00:52.Jenny Jones has just taken Britain's first ever Olympic medal

:00:53. > :00:57.on snow. To be the first champion is Olympic immortality, it will never

:00:58. > :01:10.be forgotten. She is a superstar now! She has put a market down! Oh,

:01:11. > :01:16.he put it down so clean. Shaun White has missed out on a medal.

:01:17. > :01:22.Welcome back to Sochi, our coverage of the Winter Olympics continues. I

:01:23. > :01:27.am not sure I expected to see this. It is quite something. It has been a

:01:28. > :01:31.brilliant Games so far. A bit of history, the women's downhill, the

:01:32. > :01:36.first time ever it was a dead heat, Slovenia and Switzerland taking it.

:01:37. > :01:40.Slight 's appointment for Eve Muirhead and their team as they lost

:01:41. > :01:45.to Canada 9-6, and there is plenty more great action coming up. Today

:01:46. > :01:50.is our first chance to have a look at the Nordic combined competition,

:01:51. > :01:55.a heady mix of ski jumping and cross country skiing. When it comes to the

:01:56. > :02:05.women's ice hockey, the US and Canada face off. Can Shady Davis

:02:06. > :02:08.succeed where Shaun White failed and take his third consecutive Olympic

:02:09. > :02:16.gold. And we are back at the pipe once again with American Kelly Clark

:02:17. > :02:20.the odds on favourite. Let's start with a trivia question,

:02:21. > :02:30.what is the only Winter Olympics sport for men only? Here is the

:02:31. > :02:36.answer. Ever present in the Winter Olympics programme since the first

:02:37. > :02:39.Games in 1924, Nordic combined is about strategy, strength and

:02:40. > :02:43.stamina. The individual event is split into two distinct elements.

:02:44. > :02:50.One ski jump followed by a ten metre cross country skiing race -- a ten

:02:51. > :02:53.kilometre cross country. A high-scoring ski jump is crucial to

:02:54. > :02:59.winning gold as the athletes with the longest jump again a head start

:03:00. > :03:09.in the ten K race. There is also a team race with cat Massa -- with

:03:10. > :03:16.four athletes per team. Norway had won the most medals were 26, a --

:03:17. > :03:23.including 11 golds. The Russians are getting excited

:03:24. > :03:31.down in the auditorium. He was second in the training jump. He

:03:32. > :03:37.started this season well but has faded a bit. He needs a good jump

:03:38. > :03:49.here, this is his better discipline of the two. A solid start from the

:03:50. > :03:57.Russian. He produced 101 metres in the training round, just shy of 100

:03:58. > :04:02.there. Those of you who are new to ski jumping, you will see two

:04:03. > :04:07.redlines. The first red line is the equivalent to a par in golf. If you

:04:08. > :04:12.land on it you will get 60 points, if you are further, points are

:04:13. > :04:17.added, if you are sure, points are taken away. The second red Line is

:04:18. > :04:28.the Hill distance itself which is 106 metres. Lodwick is the only

:04:29. > :04:35.American to appear in six editions of a winter or summer Games. He is

:04:36. > :04:41.an unstoppable force. Is there one more day of magic? I think there is.

:04:42. > :04:52.He has enjoyed that. Much better than he produced in the training

:04:53. > :04:57.run. Kato is another grey jumper from Japan. He has been in the top

:04:58. > :05:07.five in every training round so far in Sochi. Can he produced the goods

:05:08. > :05:16.again? Yes, he can. His compatriot is in second place at the moment.

:05:17. > :05:26.And he has matched his compatriot. He produces a distance of 100

:05:27. > :05:37.metres. How close will he get to his compatriot, Watabe, in terms of

:05:38. > :05:47.style marks. He just sat back. He goes second, Watabe is down to

:05:48. > :05:50.third. Edelmann is an experienced campaigner. A good run of

:05:51. > :05:55.performances in the last World Cup leading to this. Is it an indication

:05:56. > :06:02.that he has something special in Sochi? It could be. That was

:06:03. > :06:10.excellent. He brings form and a huge wealth of experience to this

:06:11. > :06:17.competition. Could he spring a surprise or two come the cross

:06:18. > :06:33.country later today? He moves into third place. Moan was a silver

:06:34. > :06:36.medallist in 2006, he is a brilliant skier but needs to produce something

:06:37. > :06:44.solid to give himself a chance in the ten K. Yes, he is going to love

:06:45. > :06:48.that. He is really demonstrative, the Norwegian. He was furious with

:06:49. > :06:54.himself after his performance in the training round. And this is a guy

:06:55. > :06:59.who may not be the best jumper, but if he is in with a shout, if he is

:07:00. > :07:04.within a minute of this verse starter on the cross country, you

:07:05. > :07:08.will have the belief and the challenge and expectation that he

:07:09. > :07:22.can again get amongst the medals, as he did in Italy -- if he is a minute

:07:23. > :07:34.of this first starter. Now it starts to get exciting. Chappuis is the

:07:35. > :07:40.defending champion, he has been out of sorts this year, what can he

:07:41. > :07:47.produce? The crowd like it. He is not giving too much away with that

:07:48. > :08:00.body language. He hasn't enjoyed the fact that his rival, Frenzel, has

:08:01. > :08:03.been the man of the moment this season. Chappuis is down to fourth

:08:04. > :08:08.in the World Cup rankings this year and he would dearly love to defend

:08:09. > :08:25.his title and give Frenzel something to think about come the large hill.

:08:26. > :08:34.The left arm, much further back than the right, a little wobble on the

:08:35. > :08:50.landing, but that was big. The Norwegian, determined to go further

:08:51. > :08:55.than his fifth place at the World Championships. Is he going to be the

:08:56. > :09:04.man to challenge the jewel between Chappuis and Frenzel? Who we will

:09:05. > :09:10.see jumping in a moment or two. Watabe, he would desperately love to

:09:11. > :09:17.get the first Japanese individual medal in this for 20 years.

:09:18. > :09:24.That is going to be good enough to get him in the hunt for a medal.

:09:25. > :09:31.There will be an enormous amount of work to do come the ten K but you

:09:32. > :09:39.can see by his little flirt with the camera, Watabe is a very cool, calm

:09:40. > :09:44.customer. He just missed out on a medal at the World Championships

:09:45. > :09:49.last year. He has been in brilliant form on the World Cup standings.

:09:50. > :09:56.Hence he is jumping after Chappuis. He and his brother, both producing

:09:57. > :10:01.great jumps here. Watabe has gone into the lead. Frenzel is the

:10:02. > :10:19.overwhelming favourite for gold. Oh, yes! Many have said, the only

:10:20. > :10:26.way he can lose this gold medal is if he suddenly has an attack of

:10:27. > :10:33.nerves. Frenzel has got halfway to a first winter Olympic gold medal. The

:10:34. > :10:37.ten K will take a lot longer than this, but he has been absolutely

:10:38. > :10:45.dominant on the World Cup circuit this year. And it is the one he

:10:46. > :10:49.really, really wants. So easy for something to go wrong on the ski

:10:50. > :10:56.jumping, but he has held it together, and he absolutely loves

:10:57. > :11:05.that. Frenzel will start first, and he has the upper hand at the cross

:11:06. > :11:06.country, because they will all, including Watabe, be playing catch

:11:07. > :11:17.up. The marching band is still causing a

:11:18. > :11:20.bit of a stir but I am under strict instructions by my sound man to be

:11:21. > :11:28.as far away as possible, my cameraman is less than happy. Can

:11:29. > :11:33.the Norwegian stop Frenzel? We will find out.

:11:34. > :11:39.COMMENTATOR: For the first time in Nordic combined history, there is a

:11:40. > :11:47.dedicated Nordic combined course for these guys. This is just for the

:11:48. > :11:58.Nordic combined competitors. Four circuits of 2.5 K. 35 metres, the

:11:59. > :12:04.biggest individual climb. 88 metres of climbing on every loop. It is a

:12:05. > :12:08.tough, tough course. But it is really good now that this sport is

:12:09. > :12:13.being recognised to the point of having its own course. Which, as I

:12:14. > :12:30.just said a moment ago, has never happened before. We had reports,

:12:31. > :12:35.especially from the Americans, Lodwick set in the record for six

:12:36. > :12:39.consecutive appearances, -- setting the record. The Americans saying it

:12:40. > :12:48.is very slushy and there is a feeling that this may favour the

:12:49. > :12:51.lighter guys this afternoon. Glorious sunshine in the Gorky ski

:12:52. > :13:31.Jumping Center. Only Watabe and Klimov start within

:13:32. > :13:36.reach of Frenzel. Watch out for Moan, he would admit that the ten K

:13:37. > :13:42.is his best event. He could be the kind of guy who could wait awake --

:13:43. > :13:50.weighed his way through the field and claw back some of the deficit.

:13:51. > :13:54.They will come up thick and fast. What is going through the mind of

:13:55. > :14:03.Eric Frenzel? The overwhelming favourite. 46 men and they will all

:14:04. > :14:08.be chasing the man who has barely put a foot wrong all season. The

:14:09. > :14:13.front right of your picture, wearing number one, he is number one so far

:14:14. > :14:20.this year. Can he do it now on the biggest stage of all? Watabe heads

:14:21. > :14:23.out onto the course just six seconds adrift. Fourth in the World

:14:24. > :14:30.Championships on the large hill last year. And he want to upgrade. He

:14:31. > :14:40.will try as best as he can to hang onto Frenzel. Ten, 12 guys, now 25

:14:41. > :14:46.to 30 seconds adrift. Watabe is desperate to avoid finishing fourth,

:14:47. > :14:50.as he did in the large hill last year at the World Championships.

:14:51. > :14:58.Frenzel, just tucking in at this stage. One and two, and they are

:14:59. > :15:05.still first and second right now. You can see the rest of them just

:15:06. > :15:24.coming under that walkway. In the back of shot. 15 is Moan.

:15:25. > :15:32.One of the very fast Norwegians is in that group as well. We are now

:15:33. > :15:40.closing in on the four K checkpoint, that is the halfway stage. Is Magnus

:15:41. > :15:46.Moan dragging the entire field back into contention? Let us keep our eye

:15:47. > :15:55.on the clock here. He is left of frame. Yes, he is. Magnus Moan was

:15:56. > :16:00.absolutely pumped after his ski drum -- ski jump. He has come from 15th

:16:01. > :16:06.up to third and interestingly, from the rest of the field's perspective,

:16:07. > :16:19.they have gone with him. These ten Cape Laurel macro can be so close.

:16:20. > :16:24.--10ks. You never know until the winner is over the line. It can

:16:25. > :16:52.always change so quickly. Everybody in Nordic combined thinks

:16:53. > :17:08.that Frenzel is capable of getting the goals. Akito Watabe goes ahead

:17:09. > :17:12.of Frenzel again. What wild celebrations would come from the

:17:13. > :17:19.Japanese who have made the trip here to Sochi. No Japanese man has ever

:17:20. > :17:25.won this event which has been part of the Winter Olympic programme

:17:26. > :17:35.since 1924, right at the beginning. Magnus Moan is in third. Magnus

:17:36. > :17:40.Krogh is in there too. There is a battle going on, but will it be for

:17:41. > :17:46.the bronze? This gap looks as though it is too big now. It is growing.

:17:47. > :17:56.The last graphic said that it was nine seconds and it is ticking along

:17:57. > :18:00.to 15. The coaches are roaring instructions. They will be letting

:18:01. > :18:06.them know just how far behind the rest of the group are. Magnus Moan

:18:07. > :18:20.is doing a fantastic job in third place but Big Apple is growing

:18:21. > :18:25.again. 12 seconds now. Krog has come through on the inside of Magnus

:18:26. > :18:32.Moan. Alessandro Pittin cannot be ruled out either. He is in that

:18:33. > :18:36.chasing pack at the moment. Yoshito Watabe RB is still trying to take

:18:37. > :18:47.the initiative away from Eric Frenzel. Alessandro Pittin is trying

:18:48. > :18:55.to move past another skier. Magnus Moan is in fifth place. We are

:18:56. > :19:02.watching the two leaders. They are the hunted at the moment. Have they

:19:03. > :19:10.done enough to stay away and secure gold and silver? Krog, Alessandro

:19:11. > :19:16.Pittin, it looks as though Magnus Moan may be a spent force in terms

:19:17. > :19:21.of the medals. It is a huge finish. Look at Eric Frenzel trying to come

:19:22. > :19:28.through on the inside. It is Germany and Japan battling side-by-side.

:19:29. > :19:37.Frenzel tries to steal an advantage as they head back into these ski

:19:38. > :19:42.jumping centre. Eric Frenzel has moved away, he has got the gap that

:19:43. > :19:46.he needed. He is producing the class that we have seen from him on the

:19:47. > :19:52.world-class circuit all year. It looks as though you're Suki --

:19:53. > :19:58.Yoshito Watabe the settling for silver. It has been a superb race.

:19:59. > :20:01.Eric Frenzel put himself in pole position to win himself his first

:20:02. > :20:07.Olympic title with a wonderful performance in the ski jump. He is

:20:08. > :20:12.grimacing and now he starts to celebrate, the realisation dawns

:20:13. > :20:18.that he is a Winter Olympic champion. Yoshito Watabe the

:20:19. > :20:22.produces Japan's first medal in 20 years. It is Magnus Krogh that

:20:23. > :20:30.manages to meet Alessandro Pittin for the bronze. A great performance

:20:31. > :20:33.there. It is no easy thing to go into the biggest competition of your

:20:34. > :20:39.life as the red-hot favourite with everybody expecting you to win and

:20:40. > :20:42.all you can do is lose but he coped with the pressure admirably.

:20:43. > :20:45.In terms of the medal table it makes pleasant reading for Germany because

:20:46. > :20:52.they have overtaken Norway at the top with that gold medal. Norway are

:20:53. > :20:56.in second place. The hosts are down in seventh and Great Britain has the

:20:57. > :21:04.one medals so they are down in 20 First Place. Now we will head over

:21:05. > :21:12.for our next action, it is the USA versus Canada in the ice hockey. The

:21:13. > :21:18.US won the first women's title in 1998 but the Canadians have won the

:21:19. > :21:21.last three but four out of the five last world championships have gone

:21:22. > :21:44.to the Americans so this is a tasty North American Derby.

:21:45. > :22:04.The Canadians on top of the world in women's ice hockey. It is USA versus

:22:05. > :22:08.Canada. It was the American comedian and actor Rodney Dangerfield that

:22:09. > :22:16.said he had a ticket to fight and a hockey match broke out. There is

:22:17. > :22:23.before these teams -- there is history between these teams.

:22:24. > :22:31.It remains goalless between these two heavyweights in women's hockey.

:22:32. > :22:39.They are very strong. It has been a cracking game so far. There is

:22:40. > :22:43.plenty of opportunity. They are very equally matched. Here is Rebecca

:22:44. > :22:48.Johnston, the leading scorer for Canada so far in this competition.

:22:49. > :22:54.It has been airtight so far and the crowd has been treated to a

:22:55. > :23:02.thriller. Every player on the ice is playing well.

:23:03. > :23:15.That is Kelli Stack, she has been instrumental in the American attack.

:23:16. > :23:31.There was a great defensive play here.

:23:32. > :23:37.She fires wide and pulls the trigger. But she missed the net. She

:23:38. > :23:44.has had some shots on target already. Michelle Picard had a good

:23:45. > :23:46.outlet pass and it is centre by the Americans. Meghan Duggan is the

:23:47. > :24:01.first in. Hayley Wickenheiser is in. The Americans come in with Amanda

:24:02. > :24:08.Kessel, she falls. Hayley Wickenheiser picks up the pieces, a

:24:09. > :24:18.great outlet pass. It is a Meghan Agosta-Marciano. They are rattling

:24:19. > :24:25.around in there. The Canadians are wearing the red shirts.

:24:26. > :24:35.It was stolen by Marie-Philip Poulin. What will she do? Johnston

:24:36. > :24:45.drove hard. It went wide. Canada are on the front foot. Those plays have

:24:46. > :24:52.happened a number of times. Johnston is behind the net. She skates so

:24:53. > :24:59.well. It goes to Marie-Philip Poulin. That was nearly a bad

:25:00. > :25:08.ricochet from an American point of view. Johnston again. The Canadians

:25:09. > :25:19.are searching. That angled shot went wide. It is kept alive. That was a

:25:20. > :25:24.good save. The angle was cut down well. All of that momentum started

:25:25. > :25:32.with the line. The Americans are getting tired trying to get the puck

:25:33. > :25:39.past their line. They turn it over. They got a shot in on gold and it

:25:40. > :25:45.all started with tired legs in that area.

:25:46. > :25:54.Caroline Roulette facing off for Canada. The Americans push out of

:25:55. > :26:00.the zone. Canada are forcing here, they are putting their foot down and

:26:01. > :26:03.asking questions of the Americans that they have not come close to

:26:04. > :26:09.seeing yet. The referee takes a tumble but she is OK and she gets

:26:10. > :26:26.up. Caroline Roulette has so much experience.

:26:27. > :26:33.The Americans are penned back. Maybe it can be set clear. Hilary Knight

:26:34. > :26:43.opens things up to Carpenter. Kelli Stack has had serious injury

:26:44. > :26:49.problems in the last year. She will come into her own as the tournament

:26:50. > :26:54.goes on. She is so persistent. She is a direct line player and quite

:26:55. > :26:57.slight in relation to some of the bigger American defencemen and

:26:58. > :27:03.forwards. But she can move well and she is very clever. Here is Jenna

:27:04. > :27:17.and it is a great pace. -- pass. It is going end to end. This is

:27:18. > :27:30.Hayley Wickenheiser. She drives too early and she was offside. It is a

:27:31. > :27:40.difficult play. This is a difficult combination. This is the play from

:27:41. > :27:41.Jocelyne Larocque row and it is an opportunity for the Americans to

:27:42. > :27:55.take a point. It is the Hillary Wickenheiser line

:27:56. > :27:59.against the fourth unit of the Americans. They play in groups of

:28:00. > :28:04.three. When we talk about lines that is what we mean. Each side will roll

:28:05. > :28:07.through three or four with the first being the more strong and the fourth

:28:08. > :28:20.being more defensive. Megan Bozek goes back. With all the

:28:21. > :28:24.line changing in the sport of ice hockey many think it is like

:28:25. > :28:28.organised chaos but there is more organisation than you think. Take it

:28:29. > :28:35.away Marie-Philip Poulin and! Good save. Under pressure.

:28:36. > :28:42.Marie-Philip Poulin is like a bloodhound out there. She is able to

:28:43. > :28:47.sense an opportunity. She is able to just squeeze the American defence at

:28:48. > :28:51.the right times. They try to make a play and she knows how to get her

:28:52. > :28:56.body in front and it is a great offensive opportunity for the

:28:57. > :29:01.Canadians to take a good example. What a save. -- to take ad vantage,

:29:02. > :29:11.what a save! Rebecca Johnston loses the faceoff

:29:12. > :29:16.and Marvin will take over for the Americans. We are still waiting for

:29:17. > :29:23.someone to Open the account here. It remains 0-0. The Canadians sent this

:29:24. > :29:30.one all way round. It is a real chance out front. It is daylight

:29:31. > :29:40.robbery as Brianna Decker... The celebrations were almost there. Look

:29:41. > :29:46.at this here, rolling out of the corner and Brianna Decker tried to

:29:47. > :29:53.go up high. It was taken down to safety. It could have gone a little

:29:54. > :29:57.bit higher there. The quick release nearly made that happen. The

:29:58. > :30:03.Americans after being under pressure comeback with a chance of their own.

:30:04. > :30:05.It is a game that is slow flying -- it is a game that is so finely

:30:06. > :30:21.poised. Nicholson chases back. Good hands. No call by the referee.

:30:22. > :30:36.Players allowed to continue. Gillian Apps puts the pressure on.

:30:37. > :30:51.Hayley Wickenheiser. It looks so easy for her as she

:30:52. > :30:55.sends it in deep. Lauriane Rougeau hits it hard into the boards but I'm

:30:56. > :31:02.sure that is not a penalty on Hillary red night. Play continues

:31:03. > :31:08.with Carpenter who sends it in deep. Hilary Knight gets back. A late

:31:09. > :31:18.change for Canada. They may be surprised it was not a penalty call.

:31:19. > :31:27.It has been a good period so far for team Canada. The Canadian bench will

:31:28. > :31:35.be feeling good about itself at this stage. They will do but the

:31:36. > :31:42.Americans are playing better than in the first period. They have been

:31:43. > :31:45.able to match the opportunities. Hilary Knight has not been as

:31:46. > :31:50.dominant as she was in the first game that we saw her, but she is

:31:51. > :31:56.definitely a leader. She just cause her opponent and her opponent was

:31:57. > :32:02.down for a while, I am wondering if she was injured, or wanting to see

:32:03. > :32:09.whether or not there was still a play in the zone. I think it is a

:32:10. > :32:24.penalty. I think she is grabbing her to prevent the call. If you are

:32:25. > :32:31.going to call that on contact alone, Knight barges are too far. In the

:32:32. > :32:36.men's game, body checking is fine but in the women's game it is not

:32:37. > :32:44.allowed. The line between body contact and body checking has been a

:32:45. > :32:52.little bit blurry. The Americans will clear it away. Ward for Canada.

:32:53. > :33:05.Into the offensive zone, on the chase. Decca for the US. There is a

:33:06. > :33:18.crisscross. She doesn't realise where the puck is. Good hands from

:33:19. > :33:25.Rebecca Johnson. Not making the most of their opportunities here. That

:33:26. > :33:33.play from Rebecca Johnson was world-class. She came out with

:33:34. > :33:53.stripes to get the puck across. This could be a chance. Good strength in

:33:54. > :33:59.the end. Now it is sent in. Jenna is an energy player. She skates nicely

:34:00. > :34:16.out of her own zone. Good play defensively. The Americans win back

:34:17. > :34:19.possession. The cannon from range. That is far enough, she sends it in

:34:20. > :34:32.and now there is an opening to work with. Not quite connecting in the

:34:33. > :34:36.offensive zone right now. Good movement to get the puck up, it

:34:37. > :34:55.looked promising but it sort of dissipated. Stack feeds it out in

:34:56. > :35:00.front. Knight was crashing. Rougeau is back out there. It will be an

:35:01. > :35:05.icing call as Rougeau goes back wearily. These teams are only

:35:06. > :35:09.allowing one phase on the offensive attack. Because they are not

:35:10. > :35:14.spending much time there, we're not seeing the extra secondary and third

:35:15. > :35:19.level shots that really trouble a team. Both teams are doing well to

:35:20. > :35:25.clear their lines and keep this park as an open opportunity to push you

:35:26. > :35:32.in the open zone -- to keep this puck. This could be a dresser as for

:35:33. > :35:39.the gold-medal game. These two have contested the final already a number

:35:40. > :35:44.of times at the Winter Olympics. The Americans have not won it since the

:35:45. > :35:48.first one in 1998, it has been Canadian domination ever since. The

:35:49. > :35:53.Americans come in as favourites. Rebecca Johnson does really well,

:35:54. > :35:55.the puck was stuck under her feet. Now into the offensive zone with

:35:56. > :36:24.Canada. The Americans come in waves. This

:36:25. > :36:33.line is so exciting to watch. A nice feed all the way across by

:36:34. > :36:38.Ouellette. Ouellette goes close off the side of the net. Ouellette

:36:39. > :36:46.getting the responsibility in this game, she is an experienced player.

:36:47. > :36:57.That was a lovely reverse. It is easy for the Canadians. Now a chance

:36:58. > :37:03.out in front. A good save. It was so close to sneaking through. That is

:37:04. > :37:17.the best save of the game so far. We talk about Apps may be taking a back

:37:18. > :37:20.seat but this service from Wickenheiser and Apps, who have been

:37:21. > :37:24.doing this for a couple of Games. That could easily have trickled

:37:25. > :37:40.across the American line. The conversation between coach and

:37:41. > :37:44.reverie. And occasionally, the referees will explain a call to the

:37:45. > :37:48.request of the coach, it saves a lot of frustration. It is game

:37:49. > :38:04.management for these officials, how they manage the emotion of the

:38:05. > :38:10.benches. Vetter did not see that but luckily it went well wide. Stack did

:38:11. > :38:38.not have a clue where the puck had gone. Is into the corner from

:38:39. > :38:43.Spooner. It is an odd angle. The Americans are going for a full

:38:44. > :38:50.change. Trouble at the back. She has done really well, she has created

:38:51. > :39:01.something out of nothing. Ward with a hard-hit on Lamoureux. The

:39:02. > :39:11.whistle-blowers, confusion reigns on the ice. -- the whistle blows. It

:39:12. > :39:17.was a linesman who blew the whistle so we are trying to interpret

:39:18. > :39:22.ourselves. It is a hand pass, which you are allowed to do in your

:39:23. > :39:28.defensive zone. That is Catherine Ward who just shovels it forward.

:39:29. > :39:37.Unless there is a rule change... You can't do it in the offensive zone.

:39:38. > :39:46.Clarity regarding that. There will be a face-off inside the Canadian

:39:47. > :39:51.zone. I wonder whether they have decided that ward covered the puck

:39:52. > :39:58.and froze it with her hand. That is why it remains in the zone rather

:39:59. > :40:04.centre ice. Who is going to get the breakthrough? The teams that have

:40:05. > :40:08.been skipping down the path when it has come to knocking on the door,

:40:09. > :40:20.nobody has been able to find anybody to answer it. Great pass. There is a

:40:21. > :40:25.fall, the shot will come. Battering it out in front, is there a chance

:40:26. > :40:36.for Johnston? Canada will go on a power play in a minute. The penalty

:40:37. > :40:40.is coming. I think it might be Duggan who is going, and

:40:41. > :40:50.interference call on the American captain. The Canadians could have

:40:51. > :40:54.got more on that opportunity. The Canadian defender leaves the eyes.

:40:55. > :41:08.This was the opportunity coming in that led to the power play. Hefford

:41:09. > :41:17.is taken down. Poulin gets onto it. The DOS minutes coming up with 7.33

:41:18. > :41:30.remaining -- the two minutes, not. Duggan plays on the edge. She was

:41:31. > :41:37.pursuing the Canadian, Jenner, so hard from behind. I thought it was

:41:38. > :41:42.riding the edge of somebody getting hurt. To the point where it was

:41:43. > :41:46.borderline reckless. This hopefully isn't the price the Americans have

:41:47. > :41:55.to play for getting too emotional in the heat of the battle, when it

:41:56. > :42:03.still remains scoreless. Hefford scored the gold-medal winning goal,

:42:04. > :42:11.all the way back in 2002 when Canada won 3-2 in Salt Lake City.

:42:12. > :42:20.It deflects just off the stick of Hefford. Johnston on the blue line.

:42:21. > :42:30.We watch is back on the power play after being removed in game two.

:42:31. > :42:39.Knight has company. She is digging in. From one end to the other in a

:42:40. > :42:45.matter of seconds, the Canadians are not happy here. But they only have

:42:46. > :42:55.themselves to blame and I think they may be taking a penalty. This is

:42:56. > :43:10.stacked right in, it is a bit of a forced play, they are trying to run

:43:11. > :43:15.a high position. Hillary Knight gets a cross. Rebecca Johnston was

:43:16. > :43:19.chasing back with some pursuit which you couldn't help by the time she

:43:20. > :43:25.arrived in front of goal to give a little extra, and now she is in the

:43:26. > :43:35.box. We go four on four, a quick chance for the US.

:43:36. > :43:42.Now the Canadians come back the other way, it is with Catherine Ward

:43:43. > :43:54.who leads the rush. Good play from the goal-tender. Catherine Ward can

:43:55. > :44:05.open up the play, it was good skating by the defenceman. It is

:44:06. > :44:09.still 00 0-0 after 34 minutes. They have got to be careful here. A good

:44:10. > :44:26.stretch. The US will go on a short power play

:44:27. > :44:37.in 36 seconds time. Until then, there is the extra space on the ice.

:44:38. > :44:44.Agosta may be able to exploit it. We get a whistle and a face. Great play

:44:45. > :44:57.by Agosta to take the puck North to get a shot on goal. Here it was

:44:58. > :45:04.again. If that is a penalty, it should have been in the box. Rebecca

:45:05. > :45:18.Johnston is more likely to be a threat,

:45:19. > :45:29.sometimes it does not look so bad in slow motion. Carpenter works it

:45:30. > :45:35.well. Her dad was an NHL veteran, a 50 goal scorer with the Washington

:45:36. > :45:39.side. Back to the blue line it goes. The rebound pops out, there is a

:45:40. > :45:50.fall at the first hurdle. The Canadians will clear. No icing

:45:51. > :45:53.called. Bobby Carpenter was an 18 year veteran but he did not get to

:45:54. > :45:57.play for the national programme because it was before national --

:45:58. > :46:08.professional players were allowed. Meghan Duggan was unable to finish

:46:09. > :46:12.as Canada go back to full strength. It was a great moment there for the

:46:13. > :46:16.Canadians to get themselves settled but this is just a case of flipping

:46:17. > :46:20.a coin as to who will score first. There were chances for both of

:46:21. > :46:26.them. The doughnuts remain on the scoreboard. Rebecca Johnston is a

:46:27. > :46:35.super offensive player and she attacks so well.

:46:36. > :46:39.One back at the other end by Meghan Duggan. Her pass only goes as far as

:46:40. > :47:11.Monique Lamoureux. Ward to Agosta. Better needs to

:47:12. > :47:16.chances here to hang on. -- Jessie Vetter.

:47:17. > :47:23.Gigi Marvin has had a great game defensively. This is the shot,

:47:24. > :47:28.coming in and a touch in front, great resistance from Megan Johnston

:47:29. > :47:30.but you -- Meghan Duggan that you get a sense the crowd are starting

:47:31. > :47:44.to favour the Canadians. Speaking to people in and around the

:47:45. > :47:51.Canadian camp, a few former players were predicting that this could be a

:47:52. > :47:55.tough afternoon. The shots now comes from Hilary Knight. A hard hit on

:47:56. > :48:10.the wall by night. -- Hilary Knight. 332 to go in the period. This is for

:48:11. > :48:13.the right to finish top of group A. These two are already through to the

:48:14. > :48:17.semifinals but will they go through as first or second seed? That is

:48:18. > :48:26.what is at stake as well as pride for your nation. Good play here. The

:48:27. > :48:31.two that finish top will go right to the semifinals and the bottom two

:48:32. > :48:40.world battle against the ones from the other group.

:48:41. > :48:46.The men's tournament starts later. One of two games that we are going

:48:47. > :48:53.to bring you is the Czech Republic against Sweden. Sweden are the

:48:54. > :49:03.current world champions. If it goes as well as this as we have another

:49:04. > :49:11.penalty called, Kessel has the call, and as if it is as good as this game

:49:12. > :49:15.we will be in for a real treat. The indication is that it is body

:49:16. > :49:19.checking. In ice hockey just the one arm across the body and that was

:49:20. > :49:24.Lauriane Rougeau taking down the American by the boards. We have seen

:49:25. > :49:26.similar but because you are taking away an advantageous offensive rush

:49:27. > :49:32.for the Americans that is why the whistle had blown. I get a sense

:49:33. > :49:36.that in this the Americans are really thirsting for an opportunity

:49:37. > :49:42.in this power play. It would be a wonderful time to score with three

:49:43. > :49:49.minutes remaining in the period. Hayley Wickenheiser instead of

:49:50. > :49:54.Gillian Apps. It is experience rather than speed. Hilary Knight for

:49:55. > :49:59.the US. They are like tenpin is falling as Hillary Wickenheiser goes

:50:00. > :50:01.down. Hilary Knight is so strong. Hayley Wickenheiser -- Hayley

:50:02. > :50:06.Wickenheiser gets back and is quick with the stick.

:50:07. > :50:19.A good pass from Carpenter to Megan Bozek and a hard-hit but wide of the

:50:20. > :50:23.target. It goes to Anne Schleper and she scores. The US take the

:50:24. > :50:29.advantage on the power play! She blasted it home. It was a snapshot

:50:30. > :50:37.that left Charline Labonte take clutching thin air and the American

:50:38. > :50:41.fans go mad. Tremendous execution on this power play. It initially went

:50:42. > :50:46.to Hilary Knight who bounced back. They recovered and then Anne

:50:47. > :50:50.Schleper, and it might be Hilary Knight to gets a touch on it as well

:50:51. > :50:56.but that was an incredibly well taken snapshot. Charline Labonte

:50:57. > :51:02.take cannot do much with it. Here it is again and I do think that Hilary

:51:03. > :51:07.Knight gets a touch. It is a gamebreaker for the Americans.

:51:08. > :51:10.Hilary Knight had points in eight games coming into today. You can

:51:11. > :51:15.make that nine because I think she will end up getting the credit for

:51:16. > :51:20.this one. Wonderful hand and eye coordination to do that. It was

:51:21. > :51:24.travelling in the high 70 mph because Anne Schleper had a very

:51:25. > :51:28.hard shot. Another shot comes in and the Canadians had got to be strong

:51:29. > :51:34.here. Charline Labonte a is forced to scramble and we have seen the

:51:35. > :51:39.Americans do this before. There is a bit of pushing and shoving.

:51:40. > :51:42.Lamoureux is there an Meghan Duggan is there and the Americans are on

:51:43. > :51:50.the edge at the moment. They have momentum with them. They cannot

:51:51. > :51:53.afford to get too carried away. This was the move for the Americans

:51:54. > :51:57.coming forward and a shot from Lamoureux then it was a real

:51:58. > :52:01.scramble. It was like a cannonball coming through the American forward

:52:02. > :52:04.and that is what created the aggravation at the end. They got

:52:05. > :52:08.there and it was Hilary Knight against the park. The American

:52:09. > :52:12.forwards came in with reckless abandon and that starts to get under

:52:13. > :52:20.your skin. A great time to score a goal, right at the end of the

:52:21. > :52:24.period. The Americans have the lead and they have a shot now. It is from

:52:25. > :52:36.the angle. Johnston will bring it back for the Canadians. Deep in her

:52:37. > :52:41.own zone, it is Kacey Bellamy. Brianna Decker to Kacey Bellamy.

:52:42. > :52:47.Bellamy is an honour -- Kacey Bellamy is under a lot of pressure.

:52:48. > :52:50.She tried to feed that across but she should have been more selfish.

:52:51. > :52:56.The danger is not yet clear for Canada. They are rocking right now.

:52:57. > :53:02.They need the bell. If it was boxing you would expect a standing eight

:53:03. > :53:06.count. Can the Americans find a knockout blow here just before the

:53:07. > :53:08.end of the second session or will Canada be sparked enough just to

:53:09. > :53:23.hang on. Nicholson has to get this, she does

:53:24. > :53:24.but she gives it away. Once again Hilary Knight has proved to be the

:53:25. > :53:45.key. Hilary Knight was denied her fourth

:53:46. > :53:54.goal of the Olympics. Three goals, two assists, Hilary Knight is the

:53:55. > :53:59.new breed of women's player, big and strong and athletic. She is the new

:54:00. > :54:04.Hayley Wickenheiser. That is high praise. Hilary Knight is a little

:54:05. > :54:09.bit younger and faster and smoother and she takes her chances when they

:54:10. > :54:14.come. She is right in front of goal which is always real estate -- prime

:54:15. > :54:21.real estate. 31 seconds to go in the session. The Americans will be happy

:54:22. > :54:24.to hear the hooter. They have got the wheels rolling and they can

:54:25. > :54:29.bounce into the locker room but will they bounce in with another goal to

:54:30. > :54:33.their name? This is modern with a long-range effort? Meghan Duggan is

:54:34. > :54:41.digging. Eventually she is dumped on her backside but she wants to get up

:54:42. > :54:44.and have a little interaction. The Americans are looking for a knockout

:54:45. > :54:47.punch here before the end of the second period. If they could get a

:54:48. > :54:56.second goal here they would really have the Canadians bleeding.

:54:57. > :54:59.Charline Labonte take it that one strong and with the forthcoming from

:55:00. > :55:04.Meghan Duggan she has been able to hold tight in the Canadian goal. She

:55:05. > :55:10.shut the door as the puck was heading for her.

:55:11. > :55:18.Marvin as the hooter blows. It is 1-0 US period. Our goal on the power

:55:19. > :55:22.play from Hilary Knight is the difference between these two. I do

:55:23. > :55:27.not think you need to take too much into it. It is a one shot game and

:55:28. > :55:31.there are 20 minutes left to go and this game is entirely in the balance

:55:32. > :55:35.but you have to give a bit of a nod to the Americans for taking

:55:36. > :55:38.advantage of the power play. The Canadians have to go back to the

:55:39. > :55:43.drawing board. This is for first place in group a and also address

:55:44. > :55:46.rehearsal for probably the gold-medal game and it is the United

:55:47. > :55:52.States that hold the advantage with 20 minutes to go. Hilary Knight

:55:53. > :55:59.scored the goal and they lead the Canadians by 1-0.

:56:00. > :56:33.Muirhead make the right decision on how to end it? If you ask her that

:56:34. > :56:37.question she will say was the right shot. She loves the big shots that

:56:38. > :56:41.Stone was on and she could have hit all three points out and it would

:56:42. > :56:44.have been a matchwinner. It has got to be how you feel on the day. Any

:56:45. > :56:49.other skip might have said they would take the easy to and then go

:56:50. > :57:02.into an extra end and try and steal one. That is a difficult decision,

:57:03. > :57:05.whether it was the right shot all the wrong shot but I don't think Eve

:57:06. > :57:08.will be disappointed because, let me tell you, later on in the matches

:57:09. > :57:11.she will pull these big shots off and it will make a difference. You

:57:12. > :57:13.say that it was not the wrong decision but she seems to be on a

:57:14. > :57:16.knife edge since she arrived here. Might she want to ease herself a

:57:17. > :57:21.little bit and get into the 10th or 11th end, the tie-breaker? You can

:57:22. > :57:30.say that. These first matches were tough, Sweden and Canada, the two

:57:31. > :57:32.other medal contenders. Jennifer Jones the Canadian skip against

:57:33. > :57:36.Sweden yesterday was unbelievable and Eve had a difficult first match

:57:37. > :57:41.and came back one against the USA. I thought they played well today and

:57:42. > :57:44.both teams were missing shots and there was pressure and they were

:57:45. > :57:47.trying to put pressure on each other. Eve played some big shots and

:57:48. > :57:52.Jennifer Jones played some big shots as well. I think the important thing

:57:53. > :57:56.was to play well. We want to win as many games as possible and make sure

:57:57. > :58:00.we are in the top four are the key was to match them and they matched

:58:01. > :58:03.them well throughout the game. When eve saw a chance to go for a chance

:58:04. > :58:08.to go for it and win it, you imagine if that shot had come off? It was a

:58:09. > :58:13.good ploy. I like the fact that good going for that at that point.

:58:14. > :58:16.Otherwise you pick up two and you going to be 11 friends and they

:58:17. > :58:20.still have the hammer and they might be able to shut out the game. You

:58:21. > :58:24.have to have a chance when you have -- have to have a go when you have a

:58:25. > :58:29.chance. I do not think we should be too hard on her. I think she is on

:58:30. > :58:33.an edge and you can see her emotions out there. She will put it behind

:58:34. > :58:38.her and I would like to see if that shot comes up again she will go for

:58:39. > :58:43.it again. Three matches down and two losses, against Sweden and Canada.

:58:44. > :58:47.What do she and her team need to do to make sure they qualify? Before

:58:48. > :58:50.they came here they would understand that Sweden are the current European

:58:51. > :58:54.champions and Canada are one of the best teams in the world and they

:58:55. > :58:59.would always be difficult games. Losing these games is not so

:59:00. > :59:03.Bachchan big issue. They now have to win the games they are expected to

:59:04. > :59:32.and then continue forward. The lucky thing for Eve is that she has played

:59:33. > :59:35.these teams early on in the championships and now she has to

:59:36. > :59:37.pick herself up and roll on with the rest of the games. They have to

:59:38. > :59:40.finish in the top four and then they have a semifinal place and then it

:59:41. > :59:43.is a new competition. In terms of how they are playing, Jennifer Jones

:59:44. > :59:46.has look fantastic. She has a lot of experience but it is her first

:59:47. > :59:49.Olympics. The last time the two of them played Eve came out with a big

:59:50. > :59:52.one in Las Vegas back in January. That does not mean anything. You

:59:53. > :59:55.come here and I say do you want to do your best stuff in the heats or

:59:56. > :59:58.play your best game when it does not matter as much? She has to maintain

:59:59. > :00:01.the great wins for Canada, Jennifer Johnston. For Eve, they have got a

:00:02. > :00:04.little bit of a way to go and if they can build it up, they have to

:00:05. > :00:07.win the next couple of games against China and Korea and then get

:00:08. > :00:11.involved on the table. If you finished third in the round robin it

:00:12. > :00:15.doesn't matter so much. If you win the round robin it makes no

:00:16. > :00:19.difference. You are only in the semifinals and then you have to play

:00:20. > :00:24.two matches to win a medal. Let us not get too down and despondent.

:00:25. > :00:29.They are playing OK and the big risk shots did not come off but you have

:00:30. > :00:33.to take risky screw shots to win a gold medal. Now we will look at the

:00:34. > :00:38.table to see how they are lying. How well do you see the whole team

:00:39. > :00:41.playing? They are playing exceptionally well. This is their

:00:42. > :00:45.first Olympics and there is always a worry when you come to your first

:00:46. > :00:48.Olympics that the whole media frenzy and the fact you are on a huge

:00:49. > :00:53.stage, performing for the world to seek will get on top of that -- you

:00:54. > :00:57.but you have not seen that from these girls. I think Eve has spoken

:00:58. > :01:01.to them and told them what it is like and told them to relax and

:01:02. > :01:05.treated like any competition. It is not just any competition, it is the

:01:06. > :01:07.biggest day to relax and treated like any competition. It is not just

:01:08. > :01:10.any competition, it is the biggest they too can well. They are used to

:01:11. > :01:18.playing at and they have a handful of medals to prove that. Thank you

:01:19. > :01:22.for speaking to us. It is amazing in the sunshine. You need to get back

:01:23. > :01:23.inside because we have David Murdoch and the boys against Switzerland so

:01:24. > :01:42.get backing for that. The moment has arrived for the

:01:43. > :01:48.fastest women on two skis to write this Russian roller coasters. In

:01:49. > :01:52.their quest for the ultimate prize in Alpine skiing. It is time for the

:01:53. > :02:13.2014 Olympic women's downhill. she is certainly flying at the top,

:02:14. > :02:17.good aggressive start from Dominique. Will definitely see her

:02:18. > :02:21.doing something here, she won her third training run and she is just

:02:22. > :02:28.back so her team-mates will have given her a great push so she will

:02:29. > :02:31.know exactly how because is running. A bit late in that game, that might

:02:32. > :02:40.have cost her. She has got the green light, good

:02:41. > :02:45.work in the middle part of the course from Gisin. Gliding nicely,

:02:46. > :02:50.travelling quickly, adjusting her eyesight as she changes and moves

:02:51. > :02:55.from shade to sunshine and it is getting better. Watch those legs

:02:56. > :03:00.pumping underneath her honour in and out as she goes up and over the

:03:01. > :03:03.bumps, brilliant skiing from this middle section, staying low, hitting

:03:04. > :03:07.inside the tent, the legs down there and she takes that well. Fastest in

:03:08. > :03:14.training run number three, can she be quickest of them all on downhill

:03:15. > :03:24.Day? Lots of noise from the Swiss fans, they already have the lead in

:03:25. > :03:27.the name of Suter. Gisin has it, Switzerland one, two in the women's

:03:28. > :03:45.Olympic downhill. Mancuso has proved that she is able

:03:46. > :03:52.to conquer this course and it matters most today. Charging at the

:03:53. > :03:55.top. Mancuso really knows how to turn it on at these big events and

:03:56. > :04:01.she loves the big stage and if anyone can do it today, then she

:04:02. > :04:08.will. That was huge, what a landing. And what a start, a big green light,

:04:09. > :04:12.fully in gazed with the Olympic downhill course. Silver medallist

:04:13. > :04:17.four years ago and she has come for the gold this year. And she has got

:04:18. > :04:22.a beautiful top section carrying loads of speed through the Traverse,

:04:23. > :04:28.she just lost a 10th of a second there. She seems to be flapping

:04:29. > :04:32.slightly with her hand, looking for the ideal position, she has been

:04:33. > :04:37.pushing hard and she is taking on an early line in the last two turns.

:04:38. > :04:46.She sets in for the line and goes nearly a full second down, too many

:04:47. > :04:54.errors today. Possibly pushing just too hard at the top.

:04:55. > :05:02.A big push, couple of skates, she approaches the first time rapidly.

:05:03. > :05:10.She has had a cracking season with World Cup wins, three wins in

:05:11. > :05:11.Super-G and one in giant slalom. Can she make it happen today when it

:05:12. > :05:28.matters? Smooth and effortless so far. She

:05:29. > :05:31.has got a great line and with her team-mates first and third it will

:05:32. > :05:35.have spurred her on even more. It may be that you are in the team but

:05:36. > :05:39.you are on your own in the course and she has got the green light and

:05:40. > :05:43.she is pushing hard now. She does not want to be finishing fourth, she

:05:44. > :05:52.wants to be standing on top-flight and she is in that low dynamic.

:05:53. > :06:00.Gut keeps herself in the hunt. She will be pushing hard through the

:06:01. > :06:07.gliding section, let's hope the skis and service men have worked hard to

:06:08. > :06:08.prep them. She is travelling beautifully in the glide and she

:06:09. > :06:18.switches on the green light again. It has been effortless and

:06:19. > :06:25.faultless, it has been fast for her so far.

:06:26. > :06:36.Fast movement from edge to edge and now she can set up and ride and

:06:37. > :06:43.glide for the line. She is second for Switzerland, silver medal

:06:44. > :06:44.position, Gisin clings onto gold. Switzerland first, second and fourth

:06:45. > :06:56.now. The Slovenian away, she changed her

:06:57. > :06:58.coach after a mediocre start to the season and when she did, she

:06:59. > :07:05.immediately sought success with victory in the Cortina downhill Day.

:07:06. > :07:10.She did so well in the downhill part, and she skiing well at the

:07:11. > :07:18.top. She will be mad, she will want to make a podium today. It is great

:07:19. > :07:24.skiing here and it is smooth. She is throwing caution to the wind down

:07:25. > :07:38.here, the line is perfect. So far, so good for Tina Mains. -- Maze. I

:07:39. > :07:45.am loving the body language here, her hands are low in front of her

:07:46. > :07:51.face, driving down the hill. Hardly out of the tuck and it shows in the

:07:52. > :07:55.time. Aiming to be the first Slovenian to win a gold medal at the

:07:56. > :08:03.Olympic Winter Games and to become the most successful Slovenian

:08:04. > :08:09.Olympic athlete of all time. She is getting quicker and quicker all the

:08:10. > :08:14.time. I have goose bumps watching this, this is incredible skiing. So

:08:15. > :08:18.good to see her on form. A small mistake which has maybe cost her a

:08:19. > :08:24.small amount of time. The flight was not as big as it could have been.

:08:25. > :08:29.She is hoping to break Swiss hearts this morning at Rosa Khutor. She

:08:30. > :08:38.tucks in for the line, skiing for the gold medal, she is dead level

:08:39. > :08:44.with Gisin. Equal, one minute 41.57. If it stays like that, they will

:08:45. > :08:50.have to find an extra gold medal. Delight for the Slovenian

:08:51. > :08:54.supporters, Tina Maze and Gisin show gold medal position. Laura Got

:08:55. > :09:07.pushed into bronze. Celebrations going on at the foot of

:09:08. > :09:10.the course but the Austrian is fast and focused. They are off to a great

:09:11. > :09:20.start, they have the men's Allenby downhill title and they are looking

:09:21. > :09:21.for another one here. I love watching this woman ski. She will

:09:22. > :09:31.commit to the outside ski. She has all the Austrian resources

:09:32. > :09:41.behind her in terms of skis. Oh, she has ground to a halt. It is over for

:09:42. > :09:47.Fellinger. And Gisin smiles behind her skis, she will be sharing the

:09:48. > :09:54.limelight shortly with Tina Maze and her race ends maturely. Shimmy

:09:55. > :10:04.Alcott to start for Great Britain. -- chummy Alcott.

:10:05. > :10:11.Only two British representatives in the Alpine programme, the other is

:10:12. > :10:20.David Ryding, the Alpine skier. She has put all the injuries out of her

:10:21. > :10:25.mind. She has to make a proper move over the last jump, carrying

:10:26. > :10:35.Goodspeed. Coming into the last section now. She will not be pushing

:10:36. > :10:37.for a medal but after all the injuries she has suffered, it is

:10:38. > :10:44.great to see her back on the Hill and she has taken 19th position, her

:10:45. > :10:50.best Olympic results since 2006 when she took 11th. She is happy to have

:10:51. > :10:54.raced and have made the top 20 and realistically, her best chance is

:10:55. > :10:58.still to come in the Super-G. I take my hat off to this girl, she has

:10:59. > :11:03.come through so much and to see her throw herself down the downhill will

:11:04. > :11:15.stop well done, Chemmy. The golds will go to Maze and Gisin. The

:11:16. > :11:25.bronze to Laura microbe gut. -- Laura Gut. Another solid Olympic

:11:26. > :11:30.performance in 19th performance for Chemmy, 19th position in her fourth

:11:31. > :11:33.and final Olympic downhill. You get a two-minute run to show everything

:11:34. > :11:37.have done for four years for me to prove that every time I have come

:11:38. > :11:41.back on these leg breaks, it has been worth it and a top 20 in the

:11:42. > :11:45.Olympics after what I have been through is amazing justice. I am so

:11:46. > :11:47.proud. I did not disappoint myself, it was not pretty, but it was fast

:11:48. > :11:59.and I am proud. In downhill but they do not use it

:12:00. > :12:03.to determine the result and as you can see the third period is under

:12:04. > :12:14.way with USA leading 1-0. COMMENTATOR: A penalty given to

:12:15. > :12:19.start as off against the Americans so a Canadian power play, they

:12:20. > :12:25.trailed by one goal. And this is what it is for. She has her feet

:12:26. > :12:29.sticking right out and Brianna Decker goes in the box, Canada must

:12:30. > :12:32.get players in front just like the Americans did with Hilary Knight

:12:33. > :12:43.getting that touch. They must shoot for the blue line and be in front of

:12:44. > :12:53.the goal. Brianna Decker sits, not what it said on the caption.

:12:54. > :13:03.No penalty given there. That is when we talked about the blurring of the

:13:04. > :13:10.body checking, to me it was a hit. A dangerous area by the bench, we have

:13:11. > :13:15.already seen contact and she was riding out the boards but body

:13:16. > :13:30.contact allowed, and it is a grey area.

:13:31. > :13:34.Ouellette could not quite find the hole with that shot. The Canadians

:13:35. > :14:09.reset in their own end. It is a birthday goal for Megan

:14:10. > :14:13.Augusta! The tried and trusted method for the Canadians as they tie

:14:14. > :14:21.this one up with a power-play goal. Great presence of mind and Megan

:14:22. > :14:31.Augusta one mess at 6.5 feet out -- won't mess. -- won't miss. A

:14:32. > :14:37.scramble in front, get it across and she could have shot that puck but

:14:38. > :14:42.she set up with a backhand from Augusta in a better position and

:14:43. > :14:46.that is why the Canadians score. Stand by your bed, folks, we have a

:14:47. > :14:56.hockey game on our hands right now. Pechstein Megan Augusta. -- thanks

:14:57. > :15:00.to Megan Augusta. It is the experience that the Canadian coach

:15:01. > :15:22.used, Kevin Dineen. Gillian Apps goes towards the rink.

:15:23. > :15:27.Gigi Marvin goes back. It is a real test for the Americans now.

:15:28. > :15:32.Questions coming their way and can they answer than? Lamoureux.

:15:33. > :15:34.Nicholson. These to know each other so well. They have a seven-game

:15:35. > :15:46.series before they came to Sochi. The Americans came from three down

:15:47. > :15:51.to win 4-3, that was a series. Now they have a little Olympics era is

:15:52. > :15:56.going as well. Will this be the first of two games? That is great

:15:57. > :16:02.defensive play from Jocelyne Larocque.

:16:03. > :16:09.The numerical advantage is the Americans but Johnston is strong in

:16:10. > :16:10.possession. Ward will pitch. She holds it in really pitch -- really

:16:11. > :16:19.well. Both teams are playing very well.

:16:20. > :16:25.There is no weak link where you think they could be exposed. You

:16:26. > :16:30.have to work to create opportunities. Hillary Wickenheiser

:16:31. > :16:33.fires short side and that is stopped and the whistle went before the puck

:16:34. > :16:38.crossed the line, or has it? I thought we heard it. The Canadians

:16:39. > :16:42.will celebrate. What will be the call of the officials? The Americans

:16:43. > :16:46.argue the court. Spooner crashed hard and I thought I heard a whistle

:16:47. > :16:51.on my headphones and I think they are going to go upstairs. They have

:16:52. > :16:54.to go upstairs. You have to use the technical support available. That

:16:55. > :17:00.was the discussion about the non-goal called in the Japanese

:17:01. > :17:03.against Russia match yesterday. They will go across and discuss. I

:17:04. > :17:08.thought we heard a whistle. It is so loud in here and there are whistles

:17:09. > :17:12.in the crowd. Watch this here. The whistle is timed with the clock. She

:17:13. > :17:21.popped it in and there was a shot and that could be a goal.

:17:22. > :17:35.The referee arrives late and cannot see it. There is continuation of

:17:36. > :17:39.that part. It does not have to be frozen if the referee blows the

:17:40. > :17:46.whistle. It is all whether the whistle-blowers before the puck

:17:47. > :17:50.crosses the line. The referee from Finland is doing up her helmet in

:17:51. > :17:56.the box so where will she point? She points to the centre of the ice and

:17:57. > :18:03.that means there is a goal. The Canadians take the lead. That is

:18:04. > :18:07.much to the frustration of the Americans and Meghan Duggan is

:18:08. > :18:13.getting very excited, as are the Canadian fans in the stand. I am

:18:14. > :18:16.surprised it was allowed to stand. It sounded like the whistle went

:18:17. > :18:21.before the puck cross the line but they have used technology and

:18:22. > :18:27.technology says it is a goal so that is what the school board reads. 2-1.

:18:28. > :18:30.It is incredible because we talk about the linking of the whistle

:18:31. > :18:37.through to the clock and making sure that these plays are right on. The

:18:38. > :18:40.referee arose -- the referee turned up late and she obviously did not

:18:41. > :18:44.blow the whistle. She was blocked in from behind and it is confusing for

:18:45. > :18:47.all of us but the best part of all of it is that she has gone and

:18:48. > :18:51.deferred to what the video is suggesting and it is going to be

:18:52. > :18:58.Spooner who gets the credit for the goal. It probably still is Hayley

:18:59. > :19:02.Wickenheiser, it does not really matter for the Canadians because

:19:03. > :19:05.they have created something from nothing. I think that goal belongs

:19:06. > :19:10.to Hayley Wickenheiser and she will eventually get the credit. What a

:19:11. > :19:16.turnaround we have here. Canada lead by 2-1. The Canadians, for the first

:19:17. > :19:24.time in these Olympics, find themselves trailing. They have been

:19:25. > :19:32.began brash and bold -- big and brash and bold. Now, can they deal

:19:33. > :19:36.with a confident Canada. Canada are a different hockey team that have

:19:37. > :19:40.played so far this tournament. Hillary Wickenheiser has played her

:19:41. > :19:46.best game. What I like about her play is that she could have sent the

:19:47. > :19:50.puck herself when she elected not to and be hockey gods must have been

:19:51. > :19:58.watching because she got it with the second one. And then some! Face off

:19:59. > :20:00.in the offensive zone. Quick shot comes in and straight into the glove

:20:01. > :20:18.of Jessie Vetter. The US are rocking. They are still

:20:19. > :20:27.right here as well. The Americans will hang tough on this one. A

:20:28. > :20:32.snapshot from the blue line blocked. Meghan Duggan skates well.

:20:33. > :20:36.A nice outlet for the Canadians and it could be a penalty given but it

:20:37. > :20:54.isn't. Looking for possession. On the overlap and it whistles just

:20:55. > :20:58.wide of the target. This goes to Hillary Wickenheiser. She tries to

:20:59. > :21:11.thread one through and it is a tight gap. She backs herself.

:21:12. > :21:17.I do not think anybody expected this. The long pass will be and I do

:21:18. > :21:30.not think anybody expected this. The long pass will be an icing call.

:21:31. > :21:37.I am becoming a big fan of Natalie Spooner. It is her first Olympic

:21:38. > :21:41.Games and she has been outstanding. She is always in and amongst them

:21:42. > :21:47.with a great speed and a great purpose in her play. She is a great

:21:48. > :21:49.hockey player. This is a purpose-built venue and the

:21:50. > :22:06.atmosphere is amazing. The Canadians are winning every

:22:07. > :22:16.50/50 right now. Various carpenter. Hilary Knight is first to it.

:22:17. > :22:22.The US go on a change and Brianna Decker has done really well here.

:22:23. > :22:29.She held the ball on her own as her linemates came to join her. Decker

:22:30. > :22:31.continues to work it. It was held at the blue line and now it is a

:22:32. > :22:46.chance. There were predictions from the

:22:47. > :22:48.media of a win for the US by four or five goals but it does not look as

:22:49. > :23:06.though that will come to pass. There is a chance. A second

:23:07. > :23:08.opportunity and the rebound is long. The US clear that. It goes to

:23:09. > :23:33.Decker, she has good hands. Oullette is out there on a seemingly

:23:34. > :23:47.regular shift now. She is playing well.

:23:48. > :23:52.Brianne Jenner has it again. Her feet are constantly moving out

:23:53. > :23:59.there. That is a huge hit from Monique Lamoureux.

:24:00. > :24:28.That was a great pass. A good save by Canada. They have too many men on

:24:29. > :24:33.the ice and Canada got away with it. It was a tight angle and in the

:24:34. > :24:38.end Spooner was denied. The Canadians had six players on the ice

:24:39. > :24:41.for quite some time there. It was at least six seconds and they are

:24:42. > :24:48.lucky. Those long benches run halfway down the zone. Agosta is

:24:49. > :24:53.going off to the dressing room either for repairs or equipment.

:24:54. > :24:56.Canada were very lucky considering the powerplay goals in this game

:24:57. > :25:03.that they have not actually conceded a penalty.

:25:04. > :25:08.There is good defence from the Americans but there was a touch from

:25:09. > :25:15.Rebecca Johnston and she is one of the Starts of this tournament.

:25:16. > :25:19.Spooner was right in but she just did not rest around. It was a very

:25:20. > :25:33.straight and direct speed. She is the kind of player that gives a lot

:25:34. > :25:37.of pride to the building. Let us have a look at how Canada took the

:25:38. > :25:45.lead through Hayley Wickenheiser. There was some controversy. This is

:25:46. > :25:49.the scrambling play but Hayley Wickenheiser overtook Agosta. To get

:25:50. > :25:55.that across was outstanding. In this second when she gets the credit and

:25:56. > :25:59.that puck just had its own purpose. She got it there with momentum and

:26:00. > :26:04.it found its way across the line. Go to the net hard and good things will

:26:05. > :26:07.happen. That is the old hockey adage that is exactly what Hayley

:26:08. > :26:11.Wickenheiser has done. That is funny as Hilary Knight brings it forward

:26:12. > :26:18.and the big game arrives. Hayley Wickenheiser is not too far behind.

:26:19. > :26:22.Here she is. Rubbed off the play by Hilary Knight. She felt that was a

:26:23. > :26:27.penalty. The referee was unimpressed.

:26:28. > :26:35.She is trying to feed it through and it will be held in by Brianna Decker

:26:36. > :26:40.who will not give any help. Brianna Decker is very strong but she is

:26:41. > :26:43.only five foot three. She has good body strength and a really low

:26:44. > :26:50.centre of gravity which helps her to stay up in these tough moments. She

:26:51. > :26:54.is the collegiate player of the year. There are five of them on the

:26:55. > :26:59.American squad. She is very clever and she does not give it away

:27:00. > :27:02.easily. If there were any doubts over whether Canada could go on and

:27:03. > :27:06.win themselves another gold medal here, I think they have been

:27:07. > :27:11.dispelled in this 50 minutes of hockey that we have seen. They have

:27:12. > :27:14.showed more emotion and more want and execution. They are making

:27:15. > :27:15.another here as it goes all the way through but the Americans were

:27:16. > :27:48.clear. Amanda Kessel. Meghan Duggan was first to that one.

:27:49. > :27:52.They are playing the game right on the brink and they could take a

:27:53. > :27:56.penalty. We have already seen to powerplay goals in this game and you

:27:57. > :28:04.cannot afford to give one away. Jocelyn Lamoureux and a tight angle.

:28:05. > :28:08.Meghan Duggan lost it in the lights. Here is money Lamoureux. The twins

:28:09. > :28:14.are on the same line and both are at the University of North Dakota. They

:28:15. > :28:21.play college hockey. They will bring this puck away to Meghan Duggan. It

:28:22. > :28:45.is intercepted. Jocelyn Lamoureux wins possession back.

:28:46. > :28:53.Tara Watchorn is rattled right now, she is all over the place. I do not

:28:54. > :29:00.know if it is the end of a long shift for her but she is struggling.

:29:01. > :29:09.Spooner looks for something on her own. She will find the netting above

:29:10. > :29:16.the plexiglass. It is a fair point about Tara Watchorn. She was getting

:29:17. > :29:26.ragged at the end of the end. This is a Jocelyn Lamoureux running over

:29:27. > :29:34.Agosta. That is what is happening. This is turning into a little bit of

:29:35. > :29:36.a free for all. Kendall Coyne send it high and low and straight into

:29:37. > :29:45.the zone. Nothing looks difficult for her when

:29:46. > :29:49.she has got those skates on. She is trying to dig it out of there. The

:29:50. > :29:53.referee have allowed that to stay pinned for very long of time.

:29:54. > :29:59.Eventually goes back to the blue line and then it is stolen away.

:30:00. > :30:04.Johnston tried to go clear from Canada. Is there a penalty coming?

:30:05. > :30:14.Rebecca Johnston has drawn a powerplay but the danger is not

:30:15. > :30:18.clear as Poulin to goes wide. They keep it in just. Here is Hayley

:30:19. > :30:19.Wickenheiser, the old fox. Along rebound and the whistle-blowers as

:30:20. > :30:30.the USA touch-up. I can only think of about five

:30:31. > :30:35.players in the world that can make a move like Rebecca Johnston just

:30:36. > :30:38.right there, in men's and women's. Rolling with momentum towards the

:30:39. > :30:47.goal to force this American defence to take her down. It is an

:30:48. > :30:52.exceptional player and she forces the opponent to take her down and

:30:53. > :30:54.Rebecca Johnston changes gears in the fast lane and Canada get the

:30:55. > :31:05.power play. She has been the player of the

:31:06. > :31:10.tournament so far for Canada but maybe his performances for veterans

:31:11. > :31:15.as Wickenheiser goes close and stopped on the doorstep to the

:31:16. > :31:23.anguish of the Canadian fans. Wickenheiser all on her own.

:31:24. > :31:34.You cannot afford to nap when you're killing a penalty.

:31:35. > :31:40.A chance to clear away and it is cleared.

:31:41. > :31:49.The Canadians will have a line change here as will the Americans.

:31:50. > :32:24.And there is not want to go on the power play.

:32:25. > :32:31.The US are still dangerous, do not count them out. They have got the

:32:32. > :32:35.ability to score and it is a bit of a disjointed power play for Canada.

:32:36. > :32:43.It is tough to make the precise plays. Even though you have got the

:32:44. > :32:59.advantage, you have to outwork the opposition.

:33:00. > :33:21.Good play, this. And the US go back to five strength -- full strength.

:33:22. > :33:26.There is some good defensive work from the Canadian defence right now,

:33:27. > :33:28.they are doing some things which are noticeable and looked to me like

:33:29. > :33:47.they are growing in confidence. I am not sure there is a stronger

:33:48. > :33:54.player in the women's game than heroic blue matter Hilary Knight.

:33:55. > :34:01.Della macro -- Emmy-winning's game than Hilary Knight.

:34:02. > :34:12.The Canadians now lead by three goals to one. Happy birthday, Meghan

:34:13. > :34:22.Agosta. Canada are happy. The flags fly high for Meghan Agosta. Isn't it

:34:23. > :34:25.sweet for her? She waits and finds a lane and she comes right down the

:34:26. > :34:31.middle and that is some sweet Canadian syrup as she takes the

:34:32. > :34:38.third one of this hockey game and breaks it open. Write down the

:34:39. > :34:40.middle, nobody going to catch her and Vetter will not save that as she

:34:41. > :34:51.jacks it through the five hole. Hilary Knight looks on. What a

:34:52. > :34:56.birthday for Meghan Agosta, big smiles from her. And the Canadians

:34:57. > :35:04.now with a 3-1 lead with five minutes to go in the game. Is it

:35:05. > :35:06.game over? I wouldn't say that but there is only one team who will win

:35:07. > :35:27.this now. The Canadians have played this game

:35:28. > :35:31.really well. Nobody, I think in this press box, would have predicted that

:35:32. > :35:38.Canada would have come on and more than matched the Americans. They

:35:39. > :35:42.have been smarter. There have been chances for them to take home run

:35:43. > :35:45.passes, try to make exceptional players and plays from nothing, they

:35:46. > :35:48.have not done that, they have managed it and kept it simple and

:35:49. > :36:09.just play good, fundamental hockey and not been arrogant in their play.

:36:10. > :36:16.You talk about the fundamentals right now for Canada, and it is get

:36:17. > :36:19.it out and get it in. Yes, and they are using all five players and every

:36:20. > :36:39.single one knows the responsibility on the ice.

:36:40. > :36:48.We are making the point of inconsistency in the rules of body

:36:49. > :37:13.contact and body checking. The defender is acting like a Rover.

:37:14. > :37:15.She can afford to take a chance to go forward and then come back to

:37:16. > :37:50.play defensively. The Americans will restructure. The

:37:51. > :38:29.Canadians will no now. She could have been selfish there

:38:30. > :38:35.and gone for goal but she didn't. She was a bit blind to see the

:38:36. > :38:40.player to her right hand side. The US for back into their own zone. Not

:38:41. > :38:48.many options right at the end of Hilary Knight's shift.

:38:49. > :38:57.A real opportunity now. A big blast and a second goal of the game for

:38:58. > :39:07.the US and now we have got a grand slam finish, a slap on the blue

:39:08. > :39:15.line. The US take the gamble and the gamble may pay off. 65 seconds

:39:16. > :39:21.remaining. Look at the Scrabble in the zone, she could not have made a

:39:22. > :39:28.better player of getting it to Jenner. And Labonte is falling

:39:29. > :39:32.backwards and never gets a good piece of it as it goes through her

:39:33. > :39:39.club pages falling back anyhow and that momentum takes into the goal

:39:40. > :39:49.and the are able to score number 15 hits it. A time-out may be called by

:39:50. > :39:54.the Americans but let's look at it. I think Canada have a good

:39:55. > :40:00.opportunity to put a fourth one in. The Americans do not say die and

:40:01. > :40:04.they make it a tight finish now. This is the joy of ice hockey.

:40:05. > :40:18.The save an initial one from Labonte. Should she have saved it?

:40:19. > :40:23.She should have but she got herself stretched out to defend the better

:40:24. > :40:27.opportunity and one she had overcompensated and the puck fell

:40:28. > :40:34.favourably, she was not set to make it and a tough one to blame Labonte

:40:35. > :40:37.four but if she was to be the difference, the Canadians wouldn't

:40:38. > :40:46.have played there. It went through her webbing and you can touch it,

:40:47. > :40:54.you should be able to catch it. This must be the longest 32nd time out in

:40:55. > :41:00.history. -- 30 second time out. They players will now be reset and

:41:01. > :41:04.refreshed. The crowd have been treated to a wonderful game of

:41:05. > :41:07.hockey here. These two teams are so closely matched and this is more

:41:08. > :41:13.proof as the Americans will gamble once again.

:41:14. > :41:18.Can the Canadians create something or can be Americans forced overtime

:41:19. > :41:48.here? The Canadians have too many gaiters

:41:49. > :41:56.on the eyes. Just a bit of indiscipline, given a power play

:41:57. > :42:00.away. They put too many players on the ice. That is the second time

:42:01. > :42:07.that has happened this season and he is frustrated. This is what happens,

:42:08. > :42:10.the Canadians... And they did this earlier when they had a delayed

:42:11. > :42:14.penalty, the late exchange and because the puck was so close to the

:42:15. > :42:19.play, they focus on it and they see it that Canada got away with one

:42:20. > :42:23.earlier. Six players on the ice for a few seconds. They are playing with

:42:24. > :42:30.fire here and they have done this to themselves. Kevin Dineen, angry. You

:42:31. > :42:39.should be angry at his own bench though as it is a keeper who will

:42:40. > :42:44.sit this penalty. Meghan Agosta who scored. He is looking livid. He must

:42:45. > :42:51.stay cool as it is about keeping the right energy on your bench. Right

:42:52. > :42:57.now, that is a guy used to an NHL environment. You need to do it

:42:58. > :42:58.differently. Keep your focus. Every player on each bench is leaning over

:42:59. > :43:05.the boards. Well blocked by Wickenheiser. And

:43:06. > :43:44.the Canadians win. What a victory for Canada. You can

:43:45. > :43:50.see what it means to them, they will finish winners of group A. They get

:43:51. > :43:55.the better run through to the semifinals which is the next time

:43:56. > :43:57.they will play here. Great drama but it is the Canadians who prevail,

:43:58. > :44:13.they have beaten the US 3-2. You step onto the track... Take a

:44:14. > :44:20.deep breath. Thinking about the Lions, adrenaline is pumping. There

:44:21. > :44:31.is no room for fear. Read the ice, focus, concentrate. Then, an

:44:32. > :44:37.explosion of power and strength. Corner one - you feel your way,

:44:38. > :44:45.shoulders, feet, body position. Attack with the toe and a move of

:44:46. > :44:52.the head. Lightning fast reflexes, you feel the track. It is a quest

:44:53. > :44:58.for the fastest line, finding the perfect angle. You have to stay

:44:59. > :45:03.calm. The tiniest of errors will cost you. Making the smallest

:45:04. > :45:06.adjustments in split-second reactions. It is about accuracy.

:45:07. > :45:12.Precision. One false move and you are off. On

:45:13. > :45:26.cold ice. JONATHAN EDWARDS: A beautiful sunny

:45:27. > :45:33.day here in Sochi is giving way to a stunning even in the Olympic Park.

:45:34. > :45:37.It looks magnificent. Set your alarm clocks for 7:30am tomorrow, Shelley

:45:38. > :45:43.Rudman and Lizzy Yarnold in the first two runs. In training, Lizzy

:45:44. > :45:48.Yarnold has been in outstanding form, finishing top of four of the

:45:49. > :45:53.five training runs and one of them, half a second clear. That will take

:45:54. > :45:55.place in the Sanki sliding Centre where we had now for one of the most

:45:56. > :46:07.uncovered a bull looking Winter Olympic sports. First staged at 1964

:46:08. > :46:13.games, Lucia is one of the most exciting of the Olympic sports. --

:46:14. > :46:17.luge. Double full is a one-day competition with the combined

:46:18. > :46:21.fastest time from two runs winning gold. They begin their run the

:46:22. > :46:28.sitting upright, paddling the ice with spiked gloves to build up

:46:29. > :46:31.speed. Once in an editor -- once they are in an aerodynamic position

:46:32. > :46:37.they control the direction by manoeuvring their shoulders and

:46:38. > :46:43.legs. The men slides together with the larger man positioned on top,

:46:44. > :46:48.allowing for increased speeds. It is the only Olympic sports timed to

:46:49. > :46:59.1000th of a second, many times faster than the blink of an eye. The

:47:00. > :47:11.Canadian team were certainly the youngest team to take part in

:47:12. > :47:22.capital W -- Whistler. They are looking very determined. Here we go.

:47:23. > :47:26.This is a classic blues duo with the bigger man on top and the smaller

:47:27. > :47:38.man underneath. The two of them are equal in terms

:47:39. > :47:41.of power at the start. Walker does most of the steering. It is looking

:47:42. > :47:50.like a good slide. 128.9 kilometres per hour is very

:47:51. > :48:07.quick. The speed is very good indeed. They

:48:08. > :48:12.might even get close to 137 kilometres an hour. It is a new

:48:13. > :48:22.track record. 49.857. That is very good.

:48:23. > :48:29.They have about 15 or 20 fans here all screaming and shouting and they

:48:30. > :48:33.have got their way right to the front. It is a very good start by

:48:34. > :48:38.the Canadians. These are only 22 years old, the youngest ever Winter

:48:39. > :48:42.Olympians for Canadian luge in Vancouver when they were just 18 and

:48:43. > :48:48.now they are a lot more experienced with a solid first slide. Yes, no

:48:49. > :48:55.mistakes made there at all. It was an excellent performance. Very good

:48:56. > :49:00.indeed. It is not often you see a new track record from the first

:49:01. > :49:13.paring down. It shows you what good condition the track is in. Here we

:49:14. > :49:22.go, the double Olympic champions. Andreas and Wolfgang Linger.

:49:23. > :49:28.This is it. It could be the making of this competition. The double

:49:29. > :49:32.Olympic champions are about to take to their ilk but they have not had

:49:33. > :49:36.the best through year -- New Year is coming up to the Olympics. They are

:49:37. > :49:43.not the favourites but they are big-time players and they need a

:49:44. > :49:55.good start. They get going. These start is not too good.

:49:56. > :50:04.Let us see what they get done the bottom in terms of speed. Andreas

:50:05. > :50:07.just popped his head up and has a glance through the corner. Little

:50:08. > :50:16.corrections and they have already gone into the lead. That is good.

:50:17. > :50:26.That is very good. The Lingers are absolutely flying now. They are over

:50:27. > :50:31.one tenth of the second in front. This is going to put down a really

:50:32. > :50:36.good run. That is 85 miles an hour. It is a new track record for the

:50:37. > :50:43.second time. 49.685. Absolutely superb. They will have questions to

:50:44. > :50:47.ask about that run. They realise what they have done now but they

:50:48. > :50:52.have got a lot to do before they can call the gold medal bears. I think

:50:53. > :50:55.they will be thrilled by that. The only thing they could have been

:50:56. > :50:59.better on is the start, slightly. They are looking at each other and I

:51:00. > :51:05.am not sure they are absolutely thrilled with it.

:51:06. > :51:14.It does not look bad to me, I think they can be pretty pleased with

:51:15. > :51:21.that. It all comes down to the Germans really now. They could put

:51:22. > :51:32.something big in. They do not look wildly thrilled with it. There is

:51:33. > :51:33.Wendl and ten macro three, they will be coming down after these next two

:51:34. > :51:51.men. Yuzhakov is the bigger of the two

:51:52. > :52:03.men. We will see now how powerful the

:52:04. > :52:11.Russians are in the start. They have had more slides on this site than

:52:12. > :52:23.anybody else. There started a little bit disappointing for the Russians.

:52:24. > :52:33.They just dropped off the end there. They were to latest ear off. This is

:52:34. > :52:34.going to be interesting to see just how quick they are compared to the

:52:35. > :52:57.leaders. They are behind. They are a lot slower than the

:52:58. > :53:01.Lingers and the Canadians. My goodness, where did they get that

:53:02. > :53:13.speed from! It was not enough to pull it back in. That was

:53:14. > :53:19.phenomenal. That was so quick. But 50.068 puts them into third place. I

:53:20. > :53:25.am not sure that final speed gun was right because that is bizarre. They

:53:26. > :53:30.clocked a ludicrously fast speed at the end there. It must be right, you

:53:31. > :53:34.must be right. It did not do them much good. They are obviously not

:53:35. > :53:37.taking the best line around a corner. If you take a wavy line

:53:38. > :53:39.around the corner you are taking a longer line and it can be faster

:53:40. > :53:55.because you are not cutting the ice. We now have two Tobiass. Wendl and

:53:56. > :53:59.Arlt. This is big for Germany. They have won the men of's singles and

:54:00. > :54:05.the women's singles, they did not so much when it as walk it. Can they

:54:06. > :54:12.now win the men's double luge. This is a big moment for Germany.

:54:13. > :54:19.They have only got two runs. So many things will be going through their

:54:20. > :54:37.heads. They are massive favourites to win this.

:54:38. > :54:44.They are going straight down the course. They look good at the

:54:45. > :54:49.moment. They are in the lead at the moment.

:54:50. > :55:06.They are quicker than the Lingers. This is a tremendous slide.

:55:07. > :55:24.They are in the Leyden -- they are in the lead. That is a massive lead.

:55:25. > :55:32.That is a monstrous lead. He is Tony Eggert and Sascha Benecken from

:55:33. > :55:44.Germany. If anybody can beat Wendl and Arlt it is these two. They are

:55:45. > :55:47.one of the only crews that have managed to beat Wendl and Arlt in

:55:48. > :55:55.the last few seasons and they have done it more than anybody else. Here

:55:56. > :56:00.we go. They are looking very powerful at the start. There is no

:56:01. > :56:10.doubt about that. Look at that. That is tremendous. The track record

:56:11. > :56:15.holders are ahead. Oh, they have gone behind already. There are just

:56:16. > :56:23.a few hundredths of a second in it. You can see them pulling on the

:56:24. > :56:25.upright is a little bit too much. They are a bit wavy. They are still

:56:26. > :56:39.in second position. That was really high. It was

:56:40. > :56:44.horrible, big slide. They have wiped away their chances of pressuring the

:56:45. > :56:50.Lingers for the silver medal. They are in sixth place after that record

:56:51. > :56:58.start. My goodness, you can see the reaction there from their

:56:59. > :57:01.team-mates. Just about every single German has been picture perfect. You

:57:02. > :57:05.knew at some point that one of them would have to crack, there is so

:57:06. > :57:10.much pressure on the Germans. I actually thought it might be Wendl

:57:11. > :57:13.and Arlt, the massive favourites but these two are the second favourites

:57:14. > :57:16.for the contest but look at that stage driving off the end of corner

:57:17. > :57:20.11 and they just did not pull it off early enough. If you do not steer

:57:21. > :57:24.you will end up staying on the corner and flipping off the end of

:57:25. > :57:36.it. They do not steer themselves down, these sleds.

:57:37. > :57:43.The Sics brothers had to watch that. That could have unsettled them. I do

:57:44. > :57:48.not think anything will unsettle these guys. They have steely nerves.

:57:49. > :57:53.They had a horrible car accident a couple of years ago and shattered

:57:54. > :57:58.hip but they have clawed their way up. They were silver medallist in

:57:59. > :58:04.Vancouver. They are big-time players. They may not have won many

:58:05. > :58:09.medals in between 2010 and now. Forget the start, they are behind

:58:10. > :58:11.but what can they do on the ice? They are picture perfect and they

:58:12. > :58:21.can get incredible top ten speeds. That is good and they are going

:58:22. > :58:32.through one of five there pretty well. He is keeping his toes

:58:33. > :58:35.touching forwards just like a ballet dancer. Perfect aerodynamics but

:58:36. > :58:44.they need it to get back the deficit.

:58:45. > :58:52.A touch on the wall there. They are down to fourth. They are still the

:58:53. > :59:00.fastest crew we have seen so far down the bottom. They are. That is

:59:01. > :59:11.0.507 behind the Germans. That could be significant. At the moment we

:59:12. > :59:19.have Wendl and Arlt and the Lingers. Then there is the surprise

:59:20. > :59:23.Canadian crew. This was a horrible place to take a touch. You do not

:59:24. > :59:27.have gravity helping about, you can see there. He is working on the

:59:28. > :59:29.front and pointing his right foot forwards and pulling a bit in on the

:59:30. > :59:43.upright. Well done to them though they are

:59:44. > :59:52.sitting in fourth position. The reason they are watching again is

:59:53. > :00:22.because of Oberstolz and Gruber. The start is not good that is not

:00:23. > :00:41.good at all. The lack of momentum, you could end up losing more.

:00:42. > :00:51.They are holding their form beautifully now. Look at that, the

:00:52. > :01:01.lead has been increased to four tenths of a second. If they can hang

:01:02. > :01:15.on... They lost a little bit I'm surprised by the speed. That'll be a

:01:16. > :01:21.bit disappointed, with that. We do not know mats about -- we do not

:01:22. > :01:30.know much about this... They had to be the bridesmaid to the

:01:31. > :01:34.Linger brothers. They have always sat in the shadow but believe you

:01:35. > :01:39.me, on their day, they can be number one in the world. Good starters and

:01:40. > :02:15.athletes. Let's see if they can get close to the Germans in the start.

:02:16. > :02:26.His feet seem to be jiggling a bit. It is not too bad but not

:02:27. > :02:31.particularly good. The speed is crucial here. It is similar to what

:02:32. > :02:43.the Lingers were. They are in third place. That has

:02:44. > :02:51.put the cat amongst the pigeons. Walker and Smith down to fourth.

:02:52. > :02:59.11 hundredths of a second between the two Austrians.

:03:00. > :03:10.It is an Austrian two, three at the moment.

:03:11. > :03:23.Now the Russian pair. This is very exciting, Colin. Germany, Austria,

:03:24. > :03:32.Austria, Canada, Latvia. And here go the Russian crew.

:03:33. > :03:52.Alexander Denisyev will go for this. He is a big guy in front.

:03:53. > :03:56.He really does engulf the man underneath. Who is about 20

:03:57. > :04:01.kilograms smaller than him. The man on top does most of the

:04:02. > :04:31.steering. That is a good speed. They are in sixth place, still in

:04:32. > :04:42.touch but it could only be for a minor medal. Seven crews below 50

:04:43. > :04:51.seconds. My, my goodness. That is tight. If you look at the spread

:04:52. > :04:54.from third all the way down to Gruber and Oberstolz, you are

:04:55. > :04:59.talking about 16 hundredths of a second. It will be a real dust up

:05:00. > :05:00.for the bronze medal. Even the Silver, they are not that far

:05:01. > :05:09.behind. JONATHAN EDWARDS: When it comes to

:05:10. > :05:16.the luge, it really is Germany on top. The final run will be later on

:05:17. > :05:22.in Clare Balding's programme. Carl Lewis won four consecutive gold

:05:23. > :05:28.medals for long jump, but no winter Olympian American has ever won three

:05:29. > :05:32.consecutive medals. Tonight, there is a chance here in the Adler Arena,

:05:33. > :05:40.Shaun White couldn't do it in the halfpipe but Shani Davis could do it

:05:41. > :05:41.and he has created history becoming been the first black athlete to ever

:05:42. > :05:51.win the Winter Olympic gold. COMMENTATOR: The whole arena is

:05:52. > :05:57.holding their breath. Shani Davis is the man of the moment.

:05:58. > :06:03.The first African-American to win and Winter Olympics gold medal. The

:06:04. > :06:10.champion from four years ago, the world record-holder, Shani Davis has

:06:11. > :06:16.become the first man in Winter Olympic history to defend his

:06:17. > :06:25.title. He is the champion over 1000 metres.

:06:26. > :06:30.Shani Davis shortly but tell you first about these first. GB men

:06:31. > :06:35.against Switzerland in the curling, their fourth match and at the moment

:06:36. > :06:43.they have played three and won two. Eve Muirhead lost to Canada earlier

:06:44. > :06:47.on 9-6. Another option on the red button, it is the women's halfpipe

:06:48. > :06:55.qualification which was incredibly dramatic last night. With Sean White

:06:56. > :06:59.and others losing out. Kelly Clark is a hot favourite tonight and also

:07:00. > :07:03.watch out for Torah Bright, the defending champion and the final

:07:04. > :07:07.later on this evening in Clare Balding's show. But now we will head

:07:08. > :07:13.to the Adler in and join Hugh Porter for the men's 1000 metres.

:07:14. > :07:21.COMMENTATOR: You join us in a pretty critical time, that is the

:07:22. > :07:25.conclusion of the 15th pair in this competition, they have not disrupted

:07:26. > :07:31.the overall standings and I can tell you that the German record-holder

:07:32. > :07:36.sitting at the top of the leaderboard, Samuel Schwartz with a

:07:37. > :07:44.new record of 1.08.09. He pushed Mark of the Netherlands down whose

:07:45. > :07:48.time was recorded in the fourth pair and it stood for a long time. They

:07:49. > :07:51.will be getting to the business end of this contest now and you look at

:07:52. > :07:58.the slow motion technique of the last pair here and that is Mantia

:07:59. > :08:02.and Yesin. Mantia coming across the line and it is the blade, the front

:08:03. > :08:10.which breaks the beam and that stops the clock. Mantia of the first time

:08:11. > :08:19.Olympian so he will be happy to have made these Olympic Games.

:08:20. > :08:21.Representing the Netherlands, Stefan Grouse house and its opponent from

:08:22. > :08:40.Germany, Nico Ihle. Groothuis is the national

:08:41. > :08:41.record-holder and the Dutch are expecting something special for this

:08:42. > :08:54.fellow. The fastest opening 200 we have had

:08:55. > :08:55.is 16.56. So it'll be interesting to see how close these two skaters can

:08:56. > :09:12.get to it. Groothuis as a nickname based on his

:09:13. > :09:17.strength. Let's see if his strength will reflect in the early stages.

:09:18. > :09:29.Let's get the split, Ihle, 0.18 inside the time.

:09:30. > :09:42.The last 1000 metres, 500 metres, Groothuis is very good. The world

:09:43. > :09:46.champion on the inner length. Ten three macro was fourth in Vancouver,

:09:47. > :09:55.both are in touch with the leading time.

:09:56. > :10:04.It is all about the strength and power and all the training hours.

:10:05. > :10:22.Is this going to be the new leading time? Both ahead... Oh, yes!

:10:23. > :10:25.Groothuis takes .5 off and goes into the lead and Ihle is second on

:10:26. > :10:37.1.08.86. What a superb race by Groothuis. A

:10:38. > :10:41.disappointing season so far, fell in the 500 metres and he has regained

:10:42. > :10:48.his confidence, he is the old world champion from 2012 so can he put an

:10:49. > :10:55.Olympic gold medal to his name? The chance to look at the technique at

:10:56. > :11:01.the start here. We can see Groothuis really powering his way off the

:11:02. > :11:06.start, holding the skaters extremely long, the starter, but he has got a

:11:07. > :11:10.nice Dr position, he wears a lace around his waist to try to to the

:11:11. > :11:17.left arm so it does not move too much. They stumble their from Ihle

:11:18. > :11:24.from Germany and Groothuis looks across to the screen to realise that

:11:25. > :11:41.he has taken the number one place on the scoreboard. We now move forward

:11:42. > :11:45.to pair 17 and on the ice, Michel Mulder. He has got one medal in his

:11:46. > :11:56.pocket from the 500 and member when he won that gold, he built his

:11:57. > :12:04.compatriot by 1000th of a second. So the Dutch athlete on the right

:12:05. > :12:07.looking to get a second gold medal. His opponent is Denny Morrison. In

:12:08. > :12:20.his third Olympics. The Netherlands have won the gold on

:12:21. > :12:30.two occasions on this, in 2002 and Canada have won gold back in 1984.

:12:31. > :12:36.Mulder, classic start by Mulder, he is inside the leader's time. Winner

:12:37. > :12:41.of the 500 metres two days ago as well, he is a sprinter and it is all

:12:42. > :12:58.about that, can he maintain the speed on that last 400 metres?

:12:59. > :13:05.Mulder is teeing himself up for a second tilt at the gold medal here.

:13:06. > :13:10.His twin brother who is ten minutes older than him is actually assisting

:13:11. > :13:14.with the commentary in the studio. I wonder what he is saying? Looking

:13:15. > :13:20.for the finish now, here comes Mulder, Mulder and Morrison...

:13:21. > :13:24.Morrison gets the better of him and they are second and third, great

:13:25. > :13:30.skating by the Canadian in the concluding lap. Mulder, having to

:13:31. > :13:37.settle for third. It was all about that last lap. Mulder is a sprinter,

:13:38. > :13:41.he really tried to hold it together and I think he went a bit too fast.

:13:42. > :13:49.If he saves a little bit for the last 400 metres, he shouldn't really

:13:50. > :13:52.be disappointed and excitement for Denny Morrison of Canada here, the

:13:53. > :13:59.last person to have won a Canadian skating medal was Boucher. While the

:14:00. > :14:07.slow motion images are shown, I would like to float a general

:14:08. > :14:12.speculation. Are we on the cusp of Olympic history? Because next on the

:14:13. > :14:18.ice will be Shani Davis of the USA who won the gold in Torino. He

:14:19. > :14:22.replicated that in Vancouver and now he will come to see whether he can

:14:23. > :14:24.become the first man in Olympic history to win three gold medals in

:14:25. > :14:36.three different Olympics. We will have to wait to see whether

:14:37. > :14:46.he can achieve that. Shani Davis versus his great friend of the

:14:47. > :14:53.Netherlands. In Shani Davis run delay -- won round one, two and

:14:54. > :15:00.three. He had an opportunity to carry the

:15:01. > :15:05.flag in the opening ceremony but he declined, saying he wanted to stay

:15:06. > :15:17.totally focused. Offered to do it in the closing ceremony though.

:15:18. > :15:23.He was picked for Salt Lake City in 2002. He is the holder of the world

:15:24. > :15:36.record. What avis now. We're looking for the

:15:37. > :15:48.split. Davies is right on it as they come through. He really is a man

:15:49. > :15:54.with a mission. He has tucked in nicely behind Koen Verweij of the

:15:55. > :16:04.Netherlands. Not giving it too much in the first lap of this 400 metres

:16:05. > :16:14.track. There is a lot of work to do for Davies here, he is 0.37 shy of

:16:15. > :16:19.the pace. He has what to deliver a 5-star performance here in the

:16:20. > :16:26.concluding stages. I don't think he is going to do it. The Dutchman is

:16:27. > :16:36.challenging strongly, but they are off the pace. He is not going to

:16:37. > :16:43.achieve that third gold medal. Shani Davis has gone into seventh, and the

:16:44. > :16:49.Dutchman Koen Verweij one place better in sixth. He gives 100%

:16:50. > :16:54.commitment to everything he does, and that will be a big

:16:55. > :17:01.disappointment for Shani Davis of the United States. And quite a

:17:02. > :17:05.shock. We didn't expect that. He is not even on the podium at the

:17:06. > :17:12.moment. You are right. The podium positions at the moment with two

:17:13. > :17:20.more pairs to go, Stefan Groothuis leading, and Mulder who got the gold

:17:21. > :17:27.in the 500 is currently third. We still have four very handy skaters

:17:28. > :17:33.to come. But Shani Davis, difficult to work out his feelings from that,

:17:34. > :17:51.but he will be massively disappointed. Pair number 19 will be

:17:52. > :18:04.next, Brian Hansen versus Mo Tae Bum.

:18:05. > :18:14.So what can he do here? And winner of the silver medal in the World

:18:15. > :18:22.Championships on the ice here, and he got the silver medal for this

:18:23. > :18:29.event in Vancouver. So he is quite capable of putting down a good time

:18:30. > :18:30.in the contest. So we expect a quick start from Mo Tae Bum of South

:18:31. > :18:41.Korea. He is well inside the time, but he

:18:42. > :18:51.has to measure his effort. That is a good start. He needs to pace himself

:18:52. > :19:03.well over this 1000 metre course. As he moves to the outer lane, Mo Tae

:19:04. > :19:15.Bum already on the inside. He is falling back a little now, the

:19:16. > :19:19.nearest is Mo Tae Bum. The Dutch must surely be thinking of another

:19:20. > :19:25.gold medal, with only one more pair to go after this.

:19:26. > :19:32.It is still Mo Tae Bum looking for the victory here, but he has been

:19:33. > :19:46.overhauled in the closing stages by Brian Hansen. 1:09.21. The Dutch are

:19:47. > :19:52.sitting in first and third place here, with Morrison of Canada

:19:53. > :19:57.sitting between them in the silver medal position at the moment.

:19:58. > :20:08.Disappointment for Mo Tae Bum and Brian Hansen. It was an amazing in a

:20:09. > :20:23.lap from Brian Hansen of the USA. It is a slight advantage to have the

:20:24. > :20:35.last in bend. And Stefan Groothuis is now guaranteed a medal.

:20:36. > :20:44.The ring record has been taken away by Stefan Groothuis of the

:20:45. > :20:58.Netherlands. Now, Denis Kuzin and Mirko Nenzi. Various Denis Kuzin

:20:59. > :21:09.from Kazakhstan. And Mirko Nenzi who was born in Venice. Just being

:21:10. > :21:13.introduced to the crowd, as well. Can Denis Kuzin deny Stefan

:21:14. > :21:32.Groothuis of the Netherlands the metal? -- medal? Preparing for the

:21:33. > :21:45.start now. And we are away. Only this pair can deny Stefan Groothuis

:21:46. > :21:55.the medal. A very quick start indeed by Mirko Nenzi Italy. And any Skuse

:21:56. > :22:10.in from Kazakhstan moving into the outer lane. He is the world

:22:11. > :22:20.champion. -- Kuzin from Kazakhstan. Where are they in relation to the

:22:21. > :22:24.target? They have slipped back. Stefan Groothuis is the man sitting

:22:25. > :22:32.in the gold medal position, and he is surely not going to lose it. It

:22:33. > :22:36.is the world champion Kuzin trying to find something in the closing

:22:37. > :22:44.stages here, but it doesn't look as if he is going to do it. The

:22:45. > :22:50.celebrations are already beginning here in the arena. Another gold

:22:51. > :23:01.medal for the Netherlands, and this time Stefan Groothuis has taken it.

:23:02. > :23:06.Morrison of Canada for the silver. Fantastic performance there by the

:23:07. > :23:21.Dutch once again who take two of the three medals on offer. They got it

:23:22. > :23:31.in 1998 and 2002. Terrific skating, and the Canadians, Canada won the

:23:32. > :23:35.gold back in 1984. They have had to wait a long time for a prominent

:23:36. > :23:40.position in this event, but it has happened here in Sochi. There is a

:23:41. > :23:49.very disappointed man, the world champion, Denis Kuzin. We wouldn't

:23:50. > :23:55.have predicted that result at all. Stefan Groothuis has had an awful

:23:56. > :24:02.season, and to pick-up the Olympic gold now is really amazing. I think

:24:03. > :24:10.there are probably 15 million people in Holland who wish this person to

:24:11. > :24:15.have won the gold medal. Yes, a very popular victory indeed as he

:24:16. > :24:26.celebrates. The second-place finisher, Denny Morrison of Canada.

:24:27. > :24:41.And Michel Mulder gets the bronze, and got the bronze in the 500 by

:24:42. > :24:57.that scant margin of a second. -- 1000th of a second. Stefan Groothuis

:24:58. > :24:58.skated out of his skin. Let me just confirm the official results for

:24:59. > :25:13.you. Fantastic, absorbing, but the big

:25:14. > :25:20.story is the disappointment of Shani Davis, everyone was talking of the

:25:21. > :25:28.possibility of him winning his third gold, but it just didn't happen.

:25:29. > :25:32.JONATHAN EDWARDS: The Dutch are really owning that arena, aren't

:25:33. > :25:39.they? Four out of five golds on offer. And the fans will come out to

:25:40. > :25:49.a glorious evening, clear skies, the moon looking wonderful. The Bolshoi

:25:50. > :25:57.dome behind me is looking splendid, lit up for the first time. I don't

:25:58. > :26:06.know if you can see the ice cube arena over here, because it is

:26:07. > :26:07.pretty dark. Steve Cram and Jackie Lockhart standing by to take us

:26:08. > :26:23.through the curling. It is a big match, between Great

:26:24. > :26:27.Britain and Switzerland. Switzerland should not be underestimated, the

:26:28. > :26:33.European champions last December. They had a big win against Canada in

:26:34. > :26:42.their second game, and they lost a narrow match to China. Today, Great

:26:43. > :26:49.Britain's men didn't have a match, and this has started fairly much

:26:50. > :26:58.without any drama. Great Britain with the hammer. Not too many

:26:59. > :27:08.attempt to set things up so far. But all of the teams here, you shouldn't

:27:09. > :27:11.underestimate. The Swiss win at the European Championships was a bit of

:27:12. > :27:16.a surprise will stop the only just had enough points to get them

:27:17. > :27:21.qualified in the top eight, so they didn't have to go to the extra

:27:22. > :27:24.qualification competition. Nonetheless, they have already shown

:27:25. > :27:30.that these Olympic Games that they are to be reckoned with. This is the

:27:31. > :27:38.third end, and Michael Goodfellow is Britain's lead. We will keep an eye

:27:39. > :27:41.on one or two other matches. The Canadians are playing the hosts

:27:42. > :27:46.Russia on the sheet next to this one. And China, who have rather

:27:47. > :27:57.surprised everyone by winning the first of their three matches, tied

:27:58. > :28:02.with Norway and Sweden. That is less of a surprise that those teams have

:28:03. > :28:08.won their first three matches. And Great Britain, two Wins and one

:28:09. > :28:21.loss. If they can win today, they will

:28:22. > :28:29.have won three, and that is a very good place to be.

:28:30. > :28:47.David is hopefully going to make his stone come into play now. He will

:28:48. > :28:59.hopefully hit half of the Redstone and get a roll across the house to

:29:00. > :29:04.hiding behind the guard. They will have to be really hard on this,

:29:05. > :29:10.sweep it across as far as they can. It lacked a bit of weight there, and

:29:11. > :29:22.hasn't hidden behind the yellow stone. We have had some good

:29:23. > :29:43.atmosphere with the Russian crowd, there is some noise in here. So,

:29:44. > :29:44.Sandro Trolliet. The Swiss team are not full-time curlers, they all have

:29:45. > :29:59.jobs. Accountants, Plummers. When you have that last stone

:30:00. > :30:06.advantage, trying to set the end up with these early Stones. The reason

:30:07. > :30:11.we have seen the first couple of ends blank, it is all about making

:30:12. > :30:19.sure you maximise your duties, and if you haven't got the opportunity

:30:20. > :30:27.to do that, it is normal to blank and end. That is better. I think

:30:28. > :30:41.they may be just left that a little too late though. Should have been on

:30:42. > :30:49.it ever so slightly earlier. That is a little unfortunate there, because

:30:50. > :30:54.Scott Andrews laid that very well. He played that shot, but he chose a

:30:55. > :30:59.different stone, so that indicates to me that they have got a couple of

:31:00. > :31:01.stones that are swinging. They have to manage the stones as well as the

:31:02. > :31:24.ice. Just hitting that pretty much on the

:31:25. > :31:32.nose there. So Scott Andrews coming down again. Four stones in a rope,

:31:33. > :31:36.pretty much down this same line. We really are hoping that one of these

:31:37. > :31:48.players can get the heat that we are looking for, and that has gone too

:31:49. > :31:49.far. Just to find there. We are either getting one or the other at

:31:50. > :32:00.the moment. A former skip, he is the one who is

:32:01. > :32:14.the accountant. It is an interesting thing, about

:32:15. > :32:19.the balance in the team and I read a quote from him saying, "it is better

:32:20. > :32:28.that Sven is the skip, he is more emotional than I am and the quieter

:32:29. > :32:34.type". So far, so good for them. In fact away from these Olympic Games,

:32:35. > :32:38.they have acquitted themselves so far and that is a good draw. That is

:32:39. > :32:53.a lovely shot, though. Sitting TD high will stop you do not

:32:54. > :33:01.want it to run too far behind BT line -- behind the keyline.

:33:02. > :33:14.Greg Drummond, originally from Forfar, a lovely ice rink there. A

:33:15. > :33:18.lot of junior curlers. There will be inspiration by what this youngster

:33:19. > :33:23.has done. They will really have to sweep hard in this, that is eight

:33:24. > :33:29.great bit of sweeping their from the boys. They want to take this right

:33:30. > :33:35.out the back. Very good. In lovely stone. I think Greg has played very

:33:36. > :33:39.well. He said to me when I met him the other day, he said he was

:33:40. > :33:44.nervous and he almost looks nervous but I think he has played well in

:33:45. > :33:49.all matches. Yes, without question, he is quiet but he is a fantastic

:33:50. > :33:56.third player. And has been an asset. He originally skipped two

:33:57. > :34:02.world finals with Tom Brewster as his skip, he played third to him. He

:34:03. > :34:09.is now playing third to David Murdoch here. Just the difference

:34:10. > :34:15.there, half an inch between those two stones. Greg's came down with

:34:16. > :34:19.goog sweeping its lead by -- good sweeping. Despite the efforts of his

:34:20. > :34:25.sweepers, that is the tiniest of necks. And that is the first big

:34:26. > :34:29.mistake that we have seen so far in the match.

:34:30. > :34:38.Dave is now having to decide where he wants to put his second stone

:34:39. > :34:43.because the Swiss guy has nicked the red, we have pushed it a little bit

:34:44. > :34:47.across and we can see more of the yellow. So it is really important to

:34:48. > :34:59.where you place your second stone. The crowd cheering behind them, I

:35:00. > :35:06.will give them their moment. Guess who just scored?

:35:07. > :35:16.The guys have decided to draw, take it right back as far as they

:35:17. > :35:24.possibly can, they would like this to be sitting in the back half of

:35:25. > :35:25.the circles. Hopefully allowing no double takeout to be played by the

:35:26. > :35:36.Swiss boys. Switzerland seem to be looking at

:35:37. > :35:44.the sort of shot that they try to play, role in behind the yellow.

:35:45. > :36:01.The Swiss boys like to come down here and hopefully roll a stone

:36:02. > :36:21.across to there. Spain is a bricklayer by profession.

:36:22. > :36:23.He should know something about putting stones in the right place.

:36:24. > :36:33.-- Sven. They are having to hold this stone,

:36:34. > :36:41.but he will not get the role he was hoping for. That should be a

:36:42. > :36:48.relatively easy shot for Dave if you can see all of it to get a hit and

:36:49. > :36:58.roll. He has the options of going either way here.

:36:59. > :37:05.He has to be careful here. If he is trying to fit across the yellow. He

:37:06. > :37:09.wants to make sure he is right in behind the yellow so he does not

:37:10. > :37:23.show half of the stone and leave the chance of a double.

:37:24. > :37:26.This would be a nice way to get things under way without the

:37:27. > :37:52.dramatic start. They are getting caught out with

:37:53. > :37:57.this turning down, it is pulling hard into the centre.

:37:58. > :38:10.Let's see if Sven Michelle can take note of what happened there. He was

:38:11. > :38:16.to sit the other side of bed and mind his own stone. The danger is if

:38:17. > :38:24.they laid too much weight, of the stones run straight. It has been a

:38:25. > :38:44.difficult set of conditions, very weight-dependent.

:38:45. > :38:58.I think Russell Steve is the -- I think we will still see this

:38:59. > :39:04.stone... It has taken them a little while to learn that bit of ice there

:39:05. > :39:11.but he judged that pretty good. I thought they almost left that. I

:39:12. > :39:26.thought the shot as he was tried to come in on the other side was to pop

:39:27. > :39:33.in on the other side. Either way... David's last throw.

:39:34. > :39:41.From the angle that we are sitting out here, I think he would probably

:39:42. > :39:46.be able to see half of this stone. He would like to come down at

:39:47. > :39:48.accountable weight, catch all of what he can see, push it out the

:39:49. > :40:02.back. David Murdoch... His last stone of

:40:03. > :40:10.this third end, a chance to take two here.

:40:11. > :40:21.It is fine... Oh, no. It will be one, just. David Murdoch with the

:40:22. > :40:27.chance for two, does not take it but Great Britain have an early lead

:40:28. > :40:28.here. And it has been a quiet start to this match against Switzerland

:40:29. > :40:35.but it is 1-0 after three. JONATHAN EDWARDS: If you want to

:40:36. > :40:39.continue watching that curling match, David Murdoch and that team

:40:40. > :40:45.against Switzerland, you can follow a on the bottom and indeed online on

:40:46. > :40:49.one of our six HD streams. But we are heading to the Rosa Khutor

:40:50. > :40:53.Extreme Park for live snowboard halfpipe. The women's semifinals,

:40:54. > :41:00.round two with Ed Leigh and Tim Ward.

:41:01. > :41:05.COMMENTATOR: One of the riders we saw in the qualifying rounds,

:41:06. > :41:09.promising a really nice run but she just has not been able to link it

:41:10. > :41:17.together. Not at all. A bit of a shame, really because she is good,

:41:18. > :41:22.basically. She has got a couple of big tricks in there but this pipe in

:41:23. > :41:25.decent condition today, they have managed to do more work on it

:41:26. > :41:32.overnight since the men's yesterday and it is in very good condition.

:41:33. > :41:35.She has been getting good height, and she just missed the grab and

:41:36. > :41:39.that is not the way she wanted to start that. Able to keep her speed

:41:40. > :41:46.through the pack, landing high at the transition which is exactly

:41:47. > :41:51.where you want to be landing. She winds up for the trick and that is

:41:52. > :41:59.the opposite and she let a trick go there. She had enough pipe left

:42:00. > :42:05.there to have another blast. I think the judges will notice that. She is

:42:06. > :42:09.on the bubble at the moment. 12 riders vying for six spots in the

:42:10. > :42:13.finals. The biggest air we have seen in the semifinal so far. Sadly no

:42:14. > :42:20.grab on it. So the judges will be marking that down. This front type

:42:21. > :42:39.720, she controls the landing going back and takes off backwards. Misses

:42:40. > :42:46.the grab on the 720. They are high ten two. She sat right on the

:42:47. > :42:52.bubble. It will only take... If she can get something over a 71, that

:42:53. > :43:02.will put her up a place. The only rider below her left to run has a

:43:03. > :43:12.formidable run. Let's see what we get here from the judges. They are

:43:13. > :43:16.taking their time. She has improved to 70 despite the flail first jump

:43:17. > :43:21.which looked like a cat nine. It does not put her up the leaderboard.

:43:22. > :43:44.-- looked like a cat of nine tails. The only rider left to drop behind

:43:45. > :44:06.Okada. This riders debuted in place-5-macro

:44:07. > :44:08.and she can do it here, it will put all five Chinese ladies into the

:44:09. > :44:30.final which is an amazing achievement.

:44:31. > :44:36.She does not look comfortable, she missed the 720 again. She is showing

:44:37. > :44:41.the trick no commitment whatsoever and that means that by leaning back,

:44:42. > :44:44.she is heading out of the pipe. She is not coming back into the

:44:45. > :44:50.transition, she is going out towards the flattop. You have to speculate

:44:51. > :44:55.to accumulate on the 720. And by putting more weight on the front

:44:56. > :45:00.foot, let's look. She doesn't get the grab in there, leaning back and

:45:01. > :45:04.she has done that three times already tonight and she knows it is

:45:05. > :45:10.coming now. Even when she scored her best round in the qualifiers, she

:45:11. > :45:15.just clipped the lead there. And I think she is getting done shy on

:45:16. > :45:25.that trick. I don't think it will be enough. She will stay in ninth place

:45:26. > :45:28.and that means no semifinal for Zhifeng and only three Chinese

:45:29. > :45:39.riders will advance into the finals. One is already there.

:45:40. > :45:53.Still a very good showing from the Chinese. This semifinal is going to

:45:54. > :46:03.script. Yes, absolutely. Mirabelle already

:46:04. > :46:12.in fifth. She knows she has qualified. So this is going to be a

:46:13. > :46:22.practice run for the finals. This is an enviable position to be in at the

:46:23. > :46:34.Olympics. Definitely, because it was a good place to be. She just clipped

:46:35. > :46:40.her nose trying to initiate that rotation, had no speed left. And the

:46:41. > :46:46.French coach knows that the job is done. She will be disappointed by

:46:47. > :47:00.how the bottom of that run played out. Let's take a look at the

:47:01. > :47:04.replays. She winds up for that frontside 720. She is already

:47:05. > :47:12.looking at the next wall when she has landed that. She took off way

:47:13. > :47:18.too early and catches the nose. It is amazing when you watch that.

:47:19. > :47:25.There is Valerie. Very good rider from 15 years ago. She caught the

:47:26. > :47:37.transition, took away some of the sting. 39.75 from Mirabelle, but she

:47:38. > :47:40.knows she's the final. In the graphics behind the scene Hallo

:47:41. > :48:02.there, that is the first time I have seen her look like her brother. --

:48:03. > :48:08.Ursina Haller. They are probably doing 25 mph. I think some of the

:48:09. > :48:14.men last night were probably getting closer to 35.

:48:15. > :48:24.Again, she has the confidence of knowing she is already in the final.

:48:25. > :48:31.This is a chance for her to have a practice at this 900 that we saw her

:48:32. > :48:36.do in the European open. She pulled out the 900 on her first hit at the

:48:37. > :48:43.European open in January, and that helped her win that event. We won't

:48:44. > :48:49.see that in the semifinals. I read an old article the other day by

:48:50. > :48:55.Tricia Burns, one of the American ex-Olympians, she was there in Salt

:48:56. > :49:00.Lake City. She said halfpipe is becoming more and more specialised,

:49:01. > :49:21.almost in the way that of Slate, Lodz and skeleton are. --

:49:22. > :49:30.bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. There are only a handful of super pipes

:49:31. > :49:37.around the world now. And this snow has been made by machine, and that

:49:38. > :49:42.costs a lot of money. You have to dig the trench out of the mud in the

:49:43. > :49:48.summer, and will be infrastructure. It is a lot of money to build and

:49:49. > :49:54.maintain a super pipe. And you need a craftsman to drive the pipe Dragon

:49:55. > :50:12.that cuts the curved wall. It is not as simple as it looks. She will be

:50:13. > :50:23.looking to fire a shot across the bow was of Kaitlyn Farrington.

:50:24. > :50:29.Just to go back to talking about super pipes, if you look at the

:50:30. > :50:36.places where they do have them, a lot of them in America, and that is

:50:37. > :50:42.where you have the good riders. Breckenridge in America,

:50:43. > :50:46.Switzerland, Whistler. It is no surprise when you look down the

:50:47. > :50:53.list, all of these riders live near a pipe or moved next to one. But a

:50:54. > :51:00.lot of feedback last night after the drama in the men's halfpipe. The

:51:01. > :51:05.Japanese riders did so well, claiming silver and bronze. IPod

:51:06. > :51:37.took the gold. Two riders left to go now, Li Shuang

:51:38. > :51:40.and Kaitlyn Farrington. You can see just how small some of these girls

:51:41. > :51:48.are when they stand next to their coaches. A low centre of gravity is

:51:49. > :51:54.so helpful in snowboarding. With the slopestyle you can get away with

:51:55. > :52:01.being a bit taller. You have to use your mass to tear into the

:52:02. > :52:05.take-offs. She dropped in on the back side wall first, but she landed

:52:06. > :52:13.on her heels and she wants to be landing on her toes. She landed that

:52:14. > :52:14.but struggled to control it. She is definitely using this run is a

:52:15. > :52:28.training run. A lot of the women struggling at

:52:29. > :52:37.this level certainly to approach a wall switch, or going backwards.

:52:38. > :52:40.They are then travelling across the flat bottomed backwards, and a

:52:41. > :52:47.couple of the women just struggling to control that. Li Shuang included.

:52:48. > :52:51.Not going to best her first run score of 80. She managed to have to

:52:52. > :53:17.go at that. The toe edge dobbed in, and you saw

:53:18. > :53:24.the stray of -- spray of doom. It is like squeezing the front brakes on

:53:25. > :53:36.your bike, you go over the handlebars. 56.75 for Li Shuang. And

:53:37. > :53:41.the last rider to drop, she really is admiring herself there. Totally

:53:42. > :53:50.checking herself out there, and why not? I don't think she can believe

:53:51. > :53:55.it. Kaitlyn Farrington is in first. She is doing it the hard way, she

:53:56. > :54:08.has had to come to the semifinals. We have seen some big tricks from

:54:09. > :54:14.her. There is the 180 in. This is switch here, and the backside seven.

:54:15. > :54:15.That is a trick that helps Torah Bright into the gold medal position

:54:16. > :54:27.back in Vancouver. If you look at the trick list, she

:54:28. > :54:37.has the switch backside seven, the 540. I am losing myself here. Loads

:54:38. > :54:40.of different tricks from her. She is very creative and original with all

:54:41. > :54:48.of those lines, but she is suffering on the altitude. When she comes up

:54:49. > :55:01.against the likes of Kelly Clark or Torah Bright, and Queralt

:55:02. > :55:07.Castellet, all of those can do tricks double the height of those.

:55:08. > :55:12.She will make the final, but she has got to get some more amplitude from

:55:13. > :55:19.somewhere if she wants to vie for a medal.

:55:20. > :55:30.We will way can see what score we get here for Kaitlyn Farrington.

:55:31. > :55:36.53.25. So the 87.50 stands for Kaitlyn Farrington. We will have a

:55:37. > :55:40.look and see who is going to join our existing six finalist who

:55:41. > :55:51.qualified straight from the earlier round.

:55:52. > :56:05.They have all learned their spot in the final. So these are the riders

:56:06. > :56:29.who will leave the contest now. This will be 13th place overall.

:56:30. > :56:41.We will see you for the finals around 5.30 in the UK, 9.30 local

:56:42. > :56:51.time. JONATHAN EDWARDS: Live curling at

:56:52. > :56:55.the moment on the red button. It has been quite a day so far. Still

:56:56. > :57:00.plenty to come, but here are the headlines so far.

:57:01. > :57:05.The women's downhill saw the gold-medal shared for the first

:57:06. > :57:15.time. It was a real humdinger in the

:57:16. > :57:23.curling the Eve Muirhead and her team, missing out with the last

:57:24. > :57:27.stone of the game to Canada. And no third consecutive gold medal for

:57:28. > :57:33.Shani Davis as the Netherlands take another gold in the speed skating.

:57:34. > :57:37.That is it for me. Clare Balding is up next, a lot look forward to with

:57:38. > :57:45.the halfpipe final and the Lodz doubles. -- the luge doubles. But

:57:46. > :57:48.for me, it is goodbye, and I will see you tomorrow at midday.
