:00:41. > :00:47.Hello and welcome back to the Sanki Sliding Center. If you have been

:00:48. > :00:50.watching on BBC One, you will know exactly what has just occurred. If

:00:51. > :00:53.you were watching Pointers on BBC Two, Great Britain has a new

:00:54. > :01:10.champion. Lizzy Yarnold goes for gold for

:01:11. > :01:16.Great Britain. Can she get a track record again? If she can, it is all

:01:17. > :01:23.over. She is still in the lead by a big, chunky margin. She is in

:01:24. > :01:30.control. Unbelievable. She is having the run of her life. I think she can

:01:31. > :01:36.hang onto this. That was a horrible slide, but she is still over a

:01:37. > :01:45.second ahead. This is not a great slide at all. She is making

:01:46. > :01:50.mistakes, but... She is still in the lead by a comfortable margin. Come

:01:51. > :01:57.on, Lizzy, keep it together, keep calm. Go on, Lizzy! She hit that

:01:58. > :02:01.hard on the left-hand side. It doesn't matter. She is going to win

:02:02. > :02:07.the gold medal, surely? She is going to crash -- she could crash now and

:02:08. > :02:15.win it. Lizzy Yarnold is the Olympic champion! Oh, my goodness. That was

:02:16. > :02:24.William. Look at everyone! Unbelievable. Awesome work by Lizzy

:02:25. > :02:27.Yarnold. Lizzy Yarnold has taken everything the rest of the world

:02:28. > :02:34.have had, and thrown it back in their faces. That is fantastic. She

:02:35. > :02:39.made us worry for a second! I literally nearly had a heart attack

:02:40. > :02:46.watching that. That was not the best run. I have tears in my eyes. I have

:02:47. > :02:50.passed over my Olympic crown. You are no longer Olympic champion. I am

:02:51. > :02:56.so proud of her. It is an emotional time for everyone, for the whole of

:02:57. > :03:00.British skeleton and the whole of Great Britain. That is truly

:03:01. > :03:05.remarkable. We had never even heard of Lizzy Yarnold four years ago.

:03:06. > :03:10.Four years ago, she would have been watching you get a gold . Now you

:03:11. > :03:14.are her landlady, you can sit and have a cup of tea and click your

:03:15. > :03:19.gold medals together! I had not thought of that! She's lapping it

:03:20. > :03:23.up. She has to make the most of every moment. Her life is going to

:03:24. > :03:28.change forever now. Her name is in the history books. Maybe she will

:03:29. > :03:33.keep sliding and come back in four years. I think she will. She has got

:03:34. > :03:38.a lot more to prove. She can be one of the best sliders in the world.

:03:39. > :03:46.You could see the reaction of Clive and this, her parents. Her sisters

:03:47. > :03:52.had a big hug for her. There are fireworks going off here. We had

:03:53. > :03:56.fireworks on the track. Sorry, that is a bad cliche! She dominated from

:03:57. > :04:00.the beginning. So Amy, it did not matter that her last run was not her

:04:01. > :04:05.best. No, it didn't, luckily for her. She did not have too have a

:04:06. > :04:09.perfect run. She had such a huge amount of time, unheard of. This is

:04:10. > :04:17.the Sochi track that everyone has loved to slide. Lizzy was lucky that

:04:18. > :04:24.she managed to keep it up. She would not have known until she saw her

:04:25. > :04:31.time. You have told us how aerodynamic and skilful she is at

:04:32. > :04:35.this sport. Yeah, she is a big, heavy girl, like Noelle Pikus-Pace

:04:36. > :04:41.in silver. She has a great start. She trained so hard over the summer

:04:42. > :04:46.in Bath. She has made that mistake, but overall, her rare dynamics and

:04:47. > :04:52.the technology that goes into that's sled, all the hard work, all those

:04:53. > :04:57.hours have paid off as Olympic champion. The two coaches at the

:04:58. > :05:02.bottom, it means just as much to them, all that hard work for years.

:05:03. > :05:06.That is a glorious feeling. I guess every time you go to the gym, that

:05:07. > :05:11.is what you are working for . That is what motivates you. Every day,

:05:12. > :05:15.you go to that gym as an athlete, you are lifting those weights. You

:05:16. > :05:20.do two or three sessions a day, and each of those weights you lift is,

:05:21. > :05:24.this is going to make me the better athlete. Every bit of food you put

:05:25. > :05:27.in your mouth, the hours you go to bed, all those sacrifices and that

:05:28. > :05:33.dedication, missing out on parties, celebrations, New Year's Eves, it is

:05:34. > :05:37.all worth it for this one moment. You will never regret missing out on

:05:38. > :05:43.the other side of life. As an athlete, you train your whole life

:05:44. > :05:49.to be at the Olympics and one day to bring home a medal. Gathering from

:05:50. > :05:52.what you said earlier, four years ago in Vancouver, when we sat

:05:53. > :05:55.outside having a chat at the table today after you won your gold medal,

:05:56. > :06:02.you still did not realise then what was. It will take a while for Lizzy

:06:03. > :06:08.to realise what she has achieved. It really will. It has seriously taken

:06:09. > :06:12.me four years. It has only just hit me and I have just had messages on

:06:13. > :06:16.the guys in the pub who were celebrating those images from four

:06:17. > :06:20.years ago in my local pub. They are now watching Lizzy and almost

:06:21. > :06:25.reliving it. It has only taken me until now to hit me. Lizzy is going

:06:26. > :06:30.to go to bed tonight and wake up and think, did that really happen? She

:06:31. > :06:32.will be on a media frenzy, everyone wanted to interview her. And

:06:33. > :06:38.tomorrow night, she will stand on that podium and get given her medal.

:06:39. > :06:42.I hope she can somehow be calm in that moment. If I could relive it, I

:06:43. > :06:46.would. The medal is coming back to Great Britain, where we want it to

:06:47. > :06:50.be. The fireworks display has just finished with a big bang. Let's look

:06:51. > :07:03.at the reaction of her friends and family.

:07:04. > :07:06.Katie and Charlotte, her sisters, Clive and Judith, her parents. You

:07:07. > :07:11.can see her dad has an Australian hat on. He said earlier when

:07:12. > :07:13.interviewed by Matthew Pinsent, I am allowed to embarrass my daughter,

:07:14. > :07:23.that is what fathers are allowed to do. He was wiping the tears away.

:07:24. > :07:30.And this was the flower ceremony. It is a moment that happens very

:07:31. > :07:36.quickly after the end of the race. Darren Steele of the USA made that

:07:37. > :07:44.flower presentation. These are live shots now. Those are her sisters,

:07:45. > :07:52.her mum and friends. Hallo! You can see their T-shirt. The Yarny Army,

:07:53. > :07:59.they are known as. We will talk to some of them as soon as we can. What

:08:00. > :08:03.have we started?! I am amazed at the confidence. Lizzy admitted that she

:08:04. > :08:07.had even learnt to say in Russian, I am the Olympic champion. You hardly

:08:08. > :08:13.ever hear athletes say that, and you rarely hear a female athletes aid.

:08:14. > :08:17.Some men do, boxers, but not women. That is the unique thing, Lizzy is

:08:18. > :08:24.not scared of saying, I am going to win. Maybe that is what she spent

:08:25. > :08:27.her time doing today. She was so confident that she had to fill her

:08:28. > :08:31.time doing something . May be learning Russian, and the fact that

:08:32. > :08:35.she has remembered learning how to say that! Every day, I have tried

:08:36. > :08:42.learning one word of Russian and so far, nothing. That was the

:08:43. > :08:47.confidence Lizzy had. She has said many things that transferred to life

:08:48. > :08:51.in general. Whether it is business, or problems you are going through at

:08:52. > :08:56.work, she says things like, I want to be the best version of myself

:08:57. > :09:03.that I can be. That is true in everybody's life, and she is doing

:09:04. > :09:07.it under the biggest spotlight at a Winter Olympic Games to maintain

:09:08. > :09:15.that sort of calm, collected, confident concentration, to round

:09:16. > :09:20.off all the letters see. It is amazing. As an athlete, you learn

:09:21. > :09:25.all these different skills that you can put into another area of life. I

:09:26. > :09:28.do a lot of talks with business people, and you can use the same

:09:29. > :09:35.principles to put into your training, all that hard work. It is

:09:36. > :09:40.not about concentrating on others, it is about focusing on yourself and

:09:41. > :09:44.being the best athlete you can be everyday. For me, it was not about

:09:45. > :09:49.studying other people and their times, it was about studying

:09:50. > :09:55.yourself. Where can I improve? Where can I have better nutrition? Where

:09:56. > :09:58.can I go to bed earlier? It is about those strengths, weaknesses,

:09:59. > :10:02.opportunities, threats. What can you do to become a better person? Lizzy

:10:03. > :10:07.has done that each day since she started doing skeleton. She has

:10:08. > :10:11.contributed to Great Britain's medals haul at the Winter Olympics,

:10:12. > :10:12.which is not massive, a tenth gold medal in a period that stretches

:10:13. > :10:45.back 90 years. There has been an awful lot going on

:10:46. > :10:51.today away from the sliding Centre. First, we bring you up-to-date news

:10:52. > :10:58.the curling. -- news from the curling. Great Britain's men were in

:10:59. > :11:02.action and there were more celebrations for David Murdoch and

:11:03. > :11:08.his team. They led 7-6 going into this final 10th end. And although

:11:09. > :11:20.Denmark had the hammer, the final stone, it looks as if... It is not

:11:21. > :11:26.going to be good enough. So Great Britain got the win. They won 8-6.

:11:27. > :11:36.The Danish skip was looking very disappointed. We will be rounding up

:11:37. > :11:47.all of the action later today at 7:10pm on BBC Two.

:11:48. > :11:52.There are women's aerials right now on the red button if you want to

:11:53. > :11:59.watch that live. And we will be joining live figure skating very

:12:00. > :12:06.shortly. We are going to see who will be crowned as the men's singles

:12:07. > :12:10.winner. Gosh, it has been an amazing competition, because we saw a world

:12:11. > :12:13.record yesterday in the short programme, and there is a

:12:14. > :12:20.19-year-old from Japan leading the way. Let's go there now and join Sue

:12:21. > :12:24.Barker and Robin Cousins. They... Yes, Denis ten is leading

:12:25. > :12:27.the way here and I am sitting alongside an Olympic champion who

:12:28. > :12:31.knows what it is like to win a gold medal. That is good news, Robin? It

:12:32. > :12:37.is, there has on the back of the neck went up. But this is all about

:12:38. > :12:42.the gold medal in the men's competition, and what a group of six

:12:43. > :12:45.we have in front of us. Daisuke Takahashi is capable of huge things,

:12:46. > :12:52.but the man everyone has been talking about is Yuzuru Hanyu. He

:12:53. > :13:00.had a world record score yesterday in the short programme. Patrick Chan

:13:01. > :13:08.is second, but there is just one mistake, and he and his coach know

:13:09. > :13:12.it. This is the man everyone has had to beat over the last few years. But

:13:13. > :13:20.he is not the target any more, he is the man chasing. Denis Ten of

:13:21. > :13:25.Kazakhstan is the leader at the moment. A super performance from him

:13:26. > :13:32.in the last group. He did not make a mistake, and no one must now. And it

:13:33. > :13:45.is the man with immense pressure who is going to start this final group.

:13:46. > :13:48.Spain has never won and Olympic figure skating medal, and this man,

:13:49. > :13:53.Javier Hernandez, good change that, but he needs to be better than

:13:54. > :13:57.yesterday. He was cleared at times but a disappointment in other

:13:58. > :14:00.elements, almost sluggish. His coach told him afterwards he must attack

:14:01. > :14:07.today if he is going to claim a medal. There is less than 1.7 rating

:14:08. > :14:12.third, where he is, and sixth place. He is the first of the leaders to

:14:13. > :14:14.skate. Will he put the pressure on others or leave room for them to

:14:15. > :14:33.claim a place on the podium? Two quadruple jumps are planned. He

:14:34. > :14:40.needs them both, hopefully one with the combination. He has gone for the

:14:41. > :16:33.quad toe first. That was wonderful. The step sequence done, will he go

:16:34. > :17:06.for quad number three? The jump is going to happen, it comes next.

:17:07. > :17:45.A combination of triple flip and... Legible Salchow, -- eight triple

:17:46. > :19:01.Salchow. He is one of the sport's great

:19:02. > :19:04.entertainers and everybody enjoyed that performance will stop he

:19:05. > :19:09.enjoyed the first minute because he is late macro was so good. Normally

:19:10. > :19:18.so reliable but in the end, they let him down. Two out of three ain't

:19:19. > :19:24.bad. It would have been nice to see the third quarter, the triple lutz

:19:25. > :19:32.as well needed to happen. Level fours, level threes and in the step

:19:33. > :19:40.sequence. But there was enough in there, Robin, others to come out and

:19:41. > :19:44.take the middle from him. I am also seeing that the final triple Salchow

:19:45. > :19:50.sequence has not been given any marks at all. So 12, five, nine and

:19:51. > :20:07.14 for the first two quads. Changing foot after the three turn.

:20:08. > :20:29.Easily rotating with the quad toe, terrific jump.

:20:30. > :20:40.A very tight take off on a trip for Axel, doesn't have much flow at all.

:20:41. > :20:48.-- take-off on the triple Axel. A loss of concentration on the take

:20:49. > :20:55.off for that triple lutz. Components will be good. Components always are

:20:56. > :21:02.good, he is tremendous with choreography and presentation.

:21:03. > :21:07.Always offer something a bit different. We thought we were going

:21:08. > :21:13.to see some in special and then just a few of the errors. You can only

:21:14. > :21:22.pick up points on the elements you do. Exactly. And he has certainly

:21:23. > :21:24.opened the door for others to follow . He remembered his rose for

:21:25. > :21:43.Valentines though, so well done. I think it is dawning on him, he

:21:44. > :21:49.properly does not know he got a zero for the final combination jump but

:21:50. > :22:01.166.94 actually puts him third in the free skate and second overall so

:22:02. > :22:04.no medal for him unless the leaders have a nightmare performance but it

:22:05. > :22:08.looks like he is out of the medals and it is still the Kazakhstan

:22:09. > :22:23.athlete who leads the way. But it could change here. The skater

:22:24. > :22:31.lying in fourth place, after the short programme, a huge ovation from

:22:32. > :22:36.his adoring fans, Takahashi. So much support over the years, a superstar

:22:37. > :22:46.for so long. The killing the first to put BLEEP Japanese -- Japanese

:22:47. > :22:51.athletes to win the world champ Richard. Can he take home a medal?

:22:52. > :23:20.-- world champion. MUSIC: "Yesterday" by The Beatles -

:23:21. > :23:35.instrumental. Takahashi opening with the quad toe

:23:36. > :23:43.loop. And then the triple lutz. MUSIC SWITCHES TO "COME TOGETHER" BY

:23:44. > :25:46.THE BEATLES. There is the lutz and there is the

:25:47. > :26:07.toe loop. MUSIC SWITCHES TO "IN MY LIFE" BY

:26:08. > :27:36.THE BEATLES. He certainly delivered. Really lucky

:27:37. > :27:39.to be here finishing fifth in the Japanese Championships but they put

:27:40. > :27:43.him through to give him a last chance here in front of his adoring

:27:44. > :27:51.fans and this stadium is full of his adoring fans and one once again,

:27:52. > :27:55.they will throw flowers on the ice and it will take a while to clear

:27:56. > :27:58.them. He has been so popular over the years but I do not think it will

:27:59. > :28:04.give him a medal but certainly a fond farewell to Takahashi. Much

:28:05. > :28:09.better than his practices have been giving away, that is for sure. He

:28:10. > :28:13.was surprised to find himself in fourth after the short programme. He

:28:14. > :28:18.has made it difficult for himself. Look at all these flowers! There are

:28:19. > :28:21.not in a flower girls to go and collect them and about 20 on the

:28:22. > :28:29.rink and they are still falling down. And in the middle of it, is

:28:30. > :28:34.the next athlete trying to skate around the flowers trying to do his

:28:35. > :28:37.warm up. But Takahashi came in and maybe jumps happen, they did not

:28:38. > :28:53.show up in the warm up for him. The quad was there, on two feet.

:28:54. > :29:07.That has been downgraded to a triple.

:29:08. > :29:18.There is the triple Axel. We have seen lesser errors be much more

:29:19. > :29:28.costly for earlier skaters so I have a feeling... But word I used

:29:29. > :29:32.earlier, "plummet" may see him dropping down the rankings. It is

:29:33. > :29:36.the psychology and you think, if you can produce a season's best and that

:29:37. > :29:43.would take the lead and that might give me a bronze medal. It just does

:29:44. > :29:48.not happen. Presentation, choreography in the nines but

:29:49. > :29:52.transition down in the eights. But it is the technical score that will

:29:53. > :29:57.hold him back again on this. That will not be well received by those

:29:58. > :30:01.who have thrown in the flowers that have finally been cleared from the

:30:02. > :30:09.ice. But what a career he has had. World champion back in 2010. So many

:30:10. > :30:14.glorious routines and performances over the years. The music was lovely

:30:15. > :30:33.as well, nice arrangements of Beatles classics. Such a charismatic

:30:34. > :30:37.skater. Plenty for the judges to review in that programme. That is

:30:38. > :30:48.why the scores are taking some time. It will be sad to see him go.

:30:49. > :30:55.He has been a great character on the ice. He has certainly brought many

:30:56. > :30:59.fans to skating, particularly back in Japan. When you look at their

:31:00. > :31:03.national championships, it is almost like a major international. Any one

:31:04. > :31:10.of their top five could have come here and performed in these final

:31:11. > :31:13.two groups, such is the depth there. It will be an exciting World

:31:14. > :31:19.Championships, as they are hosting them in Tokyo in a month's time. And

:31:20. > :31:24.still, the wait goes on, not only for Takahashi, but also for Yuzuru

:31:25. > :31:38.Hanyu, the leader, who is waiting to skate.

:31:39. > :31:59.He needed 172 to take the lead, so that has not gone down well. He lost

:32:00. > :32:06.it on the technical mark. No medal to end his glorious career. We wish

:32:07. > :32:19.him well. Now, what about this young man? He has twice won a silver medal

:32:20. > :32:22.at the Olympics games. And with all the drama yesterday, Plushenko

:32:23. > :32:25.withdrawing, we needed a skate to remember, and Yuzuru Hanyu did just

:32:26. > :32:32.that, producing a world record score, over 100 points. It was

:32:33. > :32:43.energetic, powerful and perfect. But this skate is for the Olympic gold

:32:44. > :32:46.medal, and he is just 19. He steadied himself, readying for the

:32:47. > :32:50.biggest moment of his short career. He made history here yesterday. Will

:32:51. > :33:29.he do the same again today? It will come down to the opening two

:33:30. > :33:37.jumps. That was the first, quadruple salchow, he wanted. Now, compose

:33:38. > :35:27.yourself, and let's do the quadruple toe loop. Yes.

:35:28. > :37:48.He did so well to recover, but that is the pressure of the Olympic

:37:49. > :37:50.games. Missing jumps early on that look so solid yesterday. That

:37:51. > :37:57.performance certainly does not secure the gold medal for Hanyu. It

:37:58. > :38:01.has left room for Patrick Chan, if he can deliver the programme . But

:38:02. > :38:08.boy, he overcame the nerves and relaxed into the programme, and then

:38:09. > :38:15.it took off. And he delivered the elements he needed. The half-loop

:38:16. > :38:20.was off in the middle, but got the triple salchow in the end. At how

:38:21. > :38:26.costly are those two mistakes earlier on? The fall on the first

:38:27. > :38:32.quad, he will get the score for the quad, but the grade of execution

:38:33. > :38:43.goes down. Plus the deduction. Two deductions for falls. 12.44 for the

:38:44. > :38:52.second quarter. 7.50 for the first quad. 16.15 for the triple axel,

:38:53. > :38:57.triple toe combination. He looks very disappointed, particularly

:38:58. > :39:03.after what he delivered yesterday in that short programme. He so wanted

:39:04. > :39:07.to come out and deliver another clean routine and it was not to be,

:39:08. > :39:14.but that is the pressure he is and in here. Just 19, and he is not

:39:15. > :39:18.experienced. Made the rotation on the quad. It was nice in the air.

:39:19. > :39:31.Caught the heel a bit on the landing. Composed himself to come

:39:32. > :39:43.back for the second. Made that one, no question.

:39:44. > :39:58.I think they may have taken a full deduction for that. Got the triple

:39:59. > :40:02.axel Andy triple toe loop. Only 19 years of age. Before, there was a

:40:03. > :40:11.question mark about his stamina in the long programme, until this year,

:40:12. > :40:14.when he did overcome Patrick Chan. But that was pressure. And that is

:40:15. > :40:21.new for him, because normally when something goes early, it does not

:40:22. > :40:26.get recovered. Delivering something in two minutes and 49 seconds is one

:40:27. > :40:31.thing, having to do it when you are exposed and pull the focus act is

:40:32. > :40:41.another. He knew the pressure was on. He got the second quad out. He

:40:42. > :40:44.does not have great experience at major international level, does he?

:40:45. > :41:04.This is a whole new experience for him. Not compared to Patrick Chan.

:41:05. > :41:11.Oh, no! His season's best is so huge, 193 plus, so that is way

:41:12. > :41:20.under. He has been penalised. All of a sudden, it looks very good for

:41:21. > :41:24.Patrick Chan and Canada. Well, Hanyu was trying to become the first

:41:25. > :41:27.Japanese skater to win the men's championship here. Patrick Chan is

:41:28. > :41:36.having to do the same now for Canada. For the past three years, he

:41:37. > :41:39.has been the most dominant skater on the planet, setting the standard,

:41:40. > :41:44.always the man to beat. It changed in December at the Grand Prix

:41:45. > :41:48.final. Here, he is playing catch up. But now he, more than anyone, is

:41:49. > :41:55.aware of what he has to do to win the gold. The dream would come true.

:41:56. > :41:59.He went in with high expectations in Vancouver and finished a

:42:00. > :42:06.disappointing fifth. But here he is, four years later, and the door has

:42:07. > :42:43.been opened by Hanyu. But can Chan take it?

:42:44. > :43:10.There was the quad, with the triple toe loop.

:43:11. > :44:46.Quad number two, just the hands down.

:44:47. > :45:34.Tight on the landing of the triple loop.

:45:35. > :46:53.The easiest jump in his programme, the double axel.

:46:54. > :47:05.He was given a chance and he didn't take it, that is not Patrick Chan at

:47:06. > :47:09.his best. So dominant for the past three years but in the past couple

:47:10. > :47:13.of months, his jumps have started to look vulnerable and they were again

:47:14. > :47:16.tonight. You think that Canada is desperate for this gold medal, they

:47:17. > :47:23.have had so many great world champions come into the Olympics,

:47:24. > :47:28.among others, whenever they have a better chance than Patrick Chan and

:47:29. > :47:32.he did not deliver the programme. I thought he was looking vulnerable,

:47:33. > :47:38.not just the jumps. There was a hesitation in him. He is normally

:47:39. > :47:45.cool and focused but then he had the first quads triple combination and I

:47:46. > :47:50.thought he was on his way. When you look at the scores, he could be 14,

:47:51. > :47:55.14 points below to take the lead in this free skate so there was bluntly

:47:56. > :48:03.of for him. But just too many mistakes.

:48:04. > :48:11.There is an extra 10% that comes from the elements at the back.

:48:12. > :48:16.Patrick lost big points. The choreography sequence, level one,

:48:17. > :48:22.2.6 for the double axel. This is the opening combination.

:48:23. > :48:30.Easy, down and light, set up for the second triple toe loop that followed

:48:31. > :48:36.the quad. No sign of pressure or tension in that body at all. And on

:48:37. > :48:40.the second one, he likes to get a little bounce on the three term,

:48:41. > :48:44.just a bit of tension forward with the body, he pushed himself onto the

:48:45. > :48:54.toe pick some scratched down a bit. At the hands down. He didn't get the

:48:55. > :48:57.lift through from that right leg coming into the take off of that to

:48:58. > :49:05.give him the elevation that he needed.

:49:06. > :49:15.Again, tight on the half-loop between the triple lutz and what he

:49:16. > :49:19.would have liked to have been a triple Salchow. He always has a big

:49:20. > :49:23.component score and he will be relying on that. It does not matter

:49:24. > :49:24.what sport you are in, once you doubt yourself, it just does not

:49:25. > :49:46.work. And it is not enough, 178.10. It is

:49:47. > :49:50.below Yuzuru Hanyu in the free skate and overall and that is not what

:49:51. > :49:56.Patrick Chan came here for. And not what we affected. Six months ago.

:49:57. > :50:00.The gold medal was his then but not to be, not his night. And I think it

:50:01. > :50:15.is just beginning to sink in. So, Yuzuru Hanyu has his hands on

:50:16. > :50:22.the gold medal but now Peter Liebers of Germany is on the eyes this. --

:50:23. > :50:25.is on the ice. He surprised everybody finishing sixth at the

:50:26. > :50:30.European Championships last month but then finished in the team event

:50:31. > :50:33.with a season's best and improve with 6.5 points yesterday and finds

:50:34. > :50:34.himself in fifth place and in touching distance of an Olympic

:50:35. > :51:10.medal. Peter Liebers of Germany. He opens with the quad toe loop.

:51:11. > :51:11.That has served him very well in the short programme, let's hope it shows

:51:12. > :51:32.up again tonight. Triple axel, triple toe loop, that

:51:33. > :53:09.is better. He will be given credit for the jump

:53:10. > :54:11.because he made the rotation. Fighting, holding on, got the

:54:12. > :55:25.Salchow and now the loop. The last of his triples.

:55:26. > :55:36.The tension of this final group is flowing from one skater to another.

:55:37. > :55:39.He has looked rock solid so far and in practice but when it came down to

:55:40. > :55:44.it with the chance of an Olympic medal, it just failed him. He is not

:55:45. > :55:49.the first I am sure he will not be the last to find that pressure.

:55:50. > :55:54.Finding himself in that final group, he has been a grafter for the last

:55:55. > :56:05.few years. He has worked so hard. He competed against his father back in

:56:06. > :56:09.the 80s # I competed, Mario when he was alongside the great Jan Hoffman

:56:10. > :56:14.but found himself in this extraordinary position yesterday of

:56:15. > :56:18.delivering the performance of his career in the short programme. He

:56:19. > :56:23.did not do himself any harm to night. The quad was not there but he

:56:24. > :56:30.pushed through the two double axel is, and the triple lutz, made it

:56:31. > :56:42.happen. And he will go away a happy man from this championship. Probably

:56:43. > :56:46.not in the top five though. He is a very open stance skater, uses his

:56:47. > :56:50.arms very high on the landings, lots of tension in the shoulders, did not

:56:51. > :56:54.get the free leg back to help them get back from that quad toe loop but

:56:55. > :57:01.he made the rotation so he will be given the credit. That was the

:57:02. > :57:09.triple axel interdigital toe loop combination. So he will begin then

:57:10. > :57:17.the point for the triple axel -- into the triple toe loop. Sorry, for

:57:18. > :57:20.the quad. Points as well for the triple axel but it was the grade of

:57:21. > :57:26.execution that the judges are looking at where they make the

:57:27. > :57:29.deduction. There were errors in the programme but boy, he can be

:57:30. > :57:32.immensely proud of what he has achieved here and he has shown the

:57:33. > :57:38.world that he is right up there with the very best and this has been a

:57:39. > :57:43.long time coming full top the season's best is 148, they are

:57:44. > :57:52.asking him to have 194 to get to the lead but let's see what he does. It

:57:53. > :57:56.is a season's best, 153.83. The crowd don't like it that that is

:57:57. > :58:05.what the judges have given him. A good component score. That is all he

:58:06. > :58:09.can ask. Come away with what he can. That puts him eighth overall so he

:58:10. > :58:14.is dropping some way down the standings but, as we said, he has

:58:15. > :58:26.come here and delivered some great programmes. As has this young man.

:58:27. > :58:35.We are set for a fairy tale ending here or are we? Jason Brown of the

:58:36. > :58:40.United States of America. Boy, he was nowhere a few months ago and

:58:41. > :58:43.suddenly second in the national championships on the American Arabic

:58:44. > :58:47.team here. He won a medal in the team event, a bronze medal for the

:58:48. > :58:57.United States and here he is skating last in the Olympic final -- on the

:58:58. > :58:58.American team here. If you can deliver a perfect routine, you never

:58:59. > :59:08.know. It is a wonderful routine as well

:59:09. > :59:10.which could bring the house down. A great step sequence towards the end,

:59:11. > :00:03.this is Jason Brown's Riverdance. This is where it gets important for

:00:04. > :00:11.Jason, triple axel, triple toe loop. It is his hardest element.

:00:12. > :00:15.The triple toe was on two feat which made the rotation on the triple

:00:16. > :02:09.axel. Him Ooh, just eking out that triple

:02:10. > :02:22.salchow at the end of the combination.

:02:23. > :02:30.Better on that triple flip, double toe loop. That should have been a

:02:31. > :03:32.double axel. There it is. Slightly underrotated on the landing

:03:33. > :03:50.of the triple loop. The judges may ask to review that.

:03:51. > :03:57.A huge ovation. It was fun, and energetic as always, but there will

:03:58. > :04:02.be in no medal for Jason Brown this time. Not as difficult a programme

:04:03. > :04:06.as the others performed, and there were mistakes as well, but boy, what

:04:07. > :04:11.a difficult few months it has been for him. There was talk about

:04:12. > :04:16.staying in the juniors last year, and he thought he would give it a

:04:17. > :04:23.chance. He has skated at last at the Olympics. He has a bright future. He

:04:24. > :04:29.still has some junior qualities about him as a performer. With the

:04:30. > :04:33.short programme, it was strong. But he is vulnerable in a long

:04:34. > :04:41.programme. He needed to be 11 points over his personal best this season

:04:42. > :04:46.to get onto that podium. But he is only 19, and he has the performer in

:04:47. > :04:50.him, which some skaters don't have, and it is very natural. It is. You

:04:51. > :04:55.can't teach that, but you can teach the quantity he needs to get those

:04:56. > :05:03.combinations consistent and find that elusive quad. They say he is

:05:04. > :05:10.not far off the rotation is with the quad. He was slightly over rotated

:05:11. > :05:19.and on two feet with the triple axel.

:05:20. > :05:31.So there is a downgrade there. And there is a downgrade on the second

:05:32. > :05:45.triple axel and zero for the triple loop. Just level one for his

:05:46. > :05:50.choreography sequence. But he is one of those skaters who, even when it

:05:51. > :05:54.doesn't quite work, you still enjoy watching the overall performance.

:05:55. > :06:04.And he doesn't let disappointments overtake him. You do not see it in

:06:05. > :06:12.his face. He has just loved being here, enjoying the moment. He came

:06:13. > :06:18.here as just the boy with the famous ponytail. It has got its own social

:06:19. > :06:25.media site. But he has certainly delivered here. Not tonight, but at

:06:26. > :06:29.the Olympics. Wonderful performance in the team competition to help

:06:30. > :06:34.America take the bronze medal. And it is all a learning experience for

:06:35. > :06:37.him at just 19. He will be lovely to work with for the coach and

:06:38. > :06:41.choreographer, because it will be interesting and exciting to see what

:06:42. > :06:47.he comes up with in the years to come.

:06:48. > :06:53.This could be a while, because I think there are a few reviews for

:06:54. > :07:03.the judges to make sure the marking is spot on and put him in the

:07:04. > :07:08.position he deserves to be. He is in the eights for the component scores.

:07:09. > :07:15.No surprise. He was always going to have a good component score. But it

:07:16. > :07:22.is the technical score he has got to work on. He came in sixth after the

:07:23. > :07:41.short programme, and I think he is going to drop. But the second mark

:07:42. > :07:45.shows what a future he could have. He is top ten in the Olympics. He

:07:46. > :07:49.may have dropped from six to nine, that there were many great skaters

:07:50. > :07:54.that today. But it is this man who is the Olympic champion, on this

:07:55. > :08:00.evening full of tension, when the leaders were just overawed by the

:08:01. > :08:04.occasion and the prize at stake. But it does go to an immensely talented

:08:05. > :08:11.young man from Japan who did not perform at his best today, but he

:08:12. > :08:18.will be a major star of the future. We look forward to 219-year-olds,

:08:19. > :08:22.Jason Brown and Yuzuru Hanyu going for. It was not quite the skate off

:08:23. > :08:28.we were hoping for or expecting, looking at that final group. But

:08:29. > :08:34.Yuzuru Hanyu, to the delight of the Japanese fans here, is the Olympic

:08:35. > :08:37.champion, the first Japanese man to win the Olympic gold medal in the

:08:38. > :08:45.men's championship and the youngest winner for 66 years. He will recover

:08:46. > :08:48.quickly from this performance. It will take Patrick Chan a long time

:08:49. > :08:52.to come to terms with what happened tonight and how he gave away that

:08:53. > :08:57.Olympic gold medal. Congratulations to Denis Ten, with all the injuries

:08:58. > :09:02.and illnesses he had throughout the year. Skin infection, back pain,

:09:03. > :09:08.ankle injury. He skated his heart out tonight in a clean programme to

:09:09. > :09:14.take the bronze medal. So not the greatest night of skating, but still

:09:15. > :09:22.drama all the way. The gold goes to Japan and Yuzuru Hanyu. Yuzuru Hanyu

:09:23. > :09:25.fell twice in that free programme, but having set a world record in the

:09:26. > :09:29.short programme, he had enough in hand to take the gold medal for

:09:30. > :09:33.Japan. Congratulations to him. Thanks to Sue Barker and Robin

:09:34. > :09:37.Cousins. Coming up next on ABC two is Today At The Games, highlights on

:09:38. > :09:39.what was a golden day here at the sliding Centre for team GB. See you

:09:40. > :09:43.in a minute.
