:00:23. > :00:29.Good afternoon, world's records, gravity defying routines and a few
:00:30. > :00:31.fairy tale comebacks as well, this years world figure Skating
:00:32. > :00:34.Championships at it all and over the next of hours, we will be taking
:00:35. > :00:38.youth through some of the highlights, the most highly
:00:39. > :00:47.anticipated in recent seasons. Here's what we have coming up for
:00:48. > :00:50.you. A terrible injury means Penny and Nick are not in Helsinki but
:00:51. > :00:57.they are back on the ice, and planning their path. Javier
:00:58. > :01:04.Hernandez of Spain targets a third successive world title. Teenage
:01:05. > :01:12.sensation Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia aiming to defend her title in
:01:13. > :01:15.the ladies. Even the slightest mistake could prove costly in the
:01:16. > :01:21.most hotly contested pairs competition of recent years. Some
:01:22. > :01:29.great skating coming up for you over the next couple of hours, watching
:01:30. > :01:32.it alongside me, 1980 gold medallist back in the midst of time, Robin
:01:33. > :01:39.cousins, and you so much for all your expertise. I will ask you for a
:01:40. > :01:50.little bit more. Who are the ones to watch over the next few hours? --
:01:51. > :01:52.Robin Cousins. Obviously we will be showing the medallist, but what was
:01:53. > :01:55.exciting for me was showing the depth in the field, my sport is
:01:56. > :01:57.probably in the best position it has ever been in, this was the strongest
:01:58. > :02:05.world figure Skating Championships I have ever witnessed. In the men's
:02:06. > :02:13.event, 43 clean quadruple jumps... New record? Yes, world records being
:02:14. > :02:15.broken, the sport is in great shape. Standard magnificent
:02:16. > :02:20.across-the-board, one standout performance, she goes in the ladies.
:02:21. > :02:29.Unbeaten since she came out of the junior ranks into the senior ranks,
:02:30. > :02:31.she has won all of her 17 events, Evgenia Medvedeva, what is so great
:02:32. > :02:38.about her, very young, she has this incredible innocence, she gets on
:02:39. > :02:48.the ice, she turns into this incredible performer, who delivers
:02:49. > :02:56.every nuance, everyone on the ice around her, we stand in awe of her,
:02:57. > :03:04.because... Such a rare talent, but so beautifully honed. Well done to
:03:05. > :03:15.the team around her and for her as well for be being able to stand the
:03:16. > :03:18.pressure. Let's get into the action now, the pairs were first up in
:03:19. > :03:27.Helsinki, let's see how the medals were decided there.
:03:28. > :03:38.CHEERING COMMENTATOR: The European champions,
:03:39. > :03:42.Vladimir Morozov and Evgenia Tarasova over. Can the naked world
:03:43. > :04:16.champions? CO-COMMENTATOR: Quadruple twist. The
:04:17. > :04:27.first we have seen this evening, successfully completed.
:04:28. > :07:25.Second row, triple loop. Slight touch down there.
:07:26. > :08:30.CHEERING So, so close. Could be a very costly
:08:31. > :08:31.lift. When you look at the technical score up there on the side, the
:08:32. > :08:43.leader is as it is... But this is before it has been
:08:44. > :08:47.double checked... And various penalties added to the technical
:08:48. > :08:49.score. You see it up there, it might go down, they have gone ahead at
:08:50. > :08:58.this point... There was the twist. A bit of what
:08:59. > :09:06.we call a collapse, landed hard into the shoulder. I'm pleased with the
:09:07. > :09:18.toe loops, perfect unison. Triple loop.
:09:19. > :09:34.No, not good enough. In the free skate. But overall... ? It is good
:09:35. > :09:48.enough. And by quite a considerable margin, actually. Second in the free
:09:49. > :10:01.skate, first overall. From Germany, the many faces to those who know
:10:02. > :10:03.their Skating, Bruno Massot and Aliona Savchenko, European silver
:10:04. > :10:33.medallist, can they turn European silver into world gold?
:10:34. > :10:54.Watched the height on this twist. -- watch. APPLAUSE
:10:55. > :11:18.Triple for the first side-by-side jump, double for the second, toed
:11:19. > :11:28.loops. -- toe loops. Good fight to hold the landing of that triple
:11:29. > :11:38.Salchow from Aliona but land it she did.
:11:39. > :16:38.Leave, and set up. Through... Two feet on the triple Salchow.
:16:39. > :16:41.Just one mistake, thrilled with that, one tiny mistake. We are going
:16:42. > :16:43.to wait for the review. Such an exquisite programme. It was
:16:44. > :16:45.beautiful to watch. Absolutely beautiful. She gets lazy on the
:16:46. > :16:48.landing sometimes, but goes down, does two feet on purpose, fighting
:16:49. > :16:51.for the one foot. That has got to be a World Championship medal, any
:16:52. > :16:53.question? What colour will it be, where are the points going. Here is
:16:54. > :16:55.the twist, the heights... Unbelievable, look at that. No
:16:56. > :16:58.touching from her on the landing. Here is the axle. Yes, it's touches.
:16:59. > :16:59.Did the hand go down? Touchdown on both throws? High up from
:17:00. > :17:01.presentation and technical. Overall, big school. Taking them into the
:17:02. > :21:42.lead. Guaranteed at least a silver. Beautiful to watch, such fine
:21:43. > :21:46.margins. It is going to be so close! Will they snatch the gold? It is all
:21:47. > :21:52.about that point deduction, that single point deduction, those throw
:21:53. > :21:55.ball all were so much stronger. Look how far ahead they are on the
:21:56. > :22:02.technical score, for now. For now, the second score, probably...
:22:03. > :22:05.Probably maybe going to beat them. Overall, yes there was the fall,
:22:06. > :22:11.which is going to get them the one point deduction, but the rest of it
:22:12. > :22:18.was absolutely plusses for me, I'm pretty much every element full. --
:22:19. > :22:24.on pretty much every element. Just over a point between them right now.
:22:25. > :22:34.Between gold and silver, I said it was going to be tight! This is...
:22:35. > :22:51.This is tense! Quad twist. Easy exit. So elegant, isn't she. Timing,
:22:52. > :23:07.boom, on it. Feet are still tight and crossed. Triple flip, both
:23:08. > :23:12.throws, such quality in the take-offs and the landings. Do we
:23:13. > :23:31.have our world champions. Yes! Tense, tense wait to find that out,
:23:32. > :23:37.she knows that she could have thrown it away with that one mistake. But
:23:38. > :23:49.there they are, world champions for 2017. Sui Wenjing, Han Cong. China.
:23:50. > :23:55.We knew it would be close, we knew that it would be brilliant. Bronze
:23:56. > :24:01.medal for Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov. Silver, Aliona
:24:02. > :24:03.Savchenko and Bruno Massot. World champions, top of the world for now,
:24:04. > :24:15.Sui Wenjing and Han Cong. STUDIO: The Chinese favourites took
:24:16. > :24:18.the title in the end but a remarkable story, from the Chinese,
:24:19. > :24:22.to come back from the injury that she had. On both ankles, surgery, on
:24:23. > :24:30.both ankles! Then, to say, I had to learn to walk again, then to get
:24:31. > :24:32.back, come back, so strongly this season, and again, testament to the
:24:33. > :24:35.team around them, getting them in shape, maintaining shape, to be able
:24:36. > :24:40.to work with her the way that she needed him to work with her, when
:24:41. > :24:43.she came back. Quite remarkable, I am such fans. They were put together
:24:44. > :24:49.when they were ten years old and 12 years old, with the Olympics in
:24:50. > :24:53.mind, so it was a major blip in the scheduling for this to have happened
:24:54. > :24:57.to her. They had the Pyeongchang capital at Olympics in mind. The
:24:58. > :25:03.Chinese Olympic medal machine back on track. Would it be a surprise to
:25:04. > :25:05.see the Chinese win an Olympic gold, instead of the Russians? Russians
:25:06. > :25:10.have been dominant for years. -- Pyeongchang Olympics. You cannot
:25:11. > :25:12.discount them, they have always been dominant, wonderful statement from
:25:13. > :25:21.the bronze medal position, three or four others are bubbling under in
:25:22. > :25:26.the junior Championships. Don't forget, the Canadians sitting
:25:27. > :25:30.sandwiched between them -- the Germans, Aliona Savchenko and Bruno
:25:31. > :25:43.Massot. They have struggled, made this journey, this struggle, to get
:25:44. > :25:45.her back onto a podium, they will be fighting for the goal. New couples
:25:46. > :25:48.coming up through the junior ranks in time for the Olympics, perhaps? A
:25:49. > :25:50.lot of skaters in all four disciplines, and back from the
:25:51. > :25:52.junior ranks, going to be age eligible, to reiterate, people
:25:53. > :25:55.gaining places for the Olympics, not your personal place, it is a place
:25:56. > :26:01.for your country. Who represents the country at the Olympics next year is
:26:02. > :26:05.still to be decided. Still all to play for. The pairs was always going
:26:06. > :26:10.to be a close event, but we were expecting one woman to stand head
:26:11. > :26:13.and shoulders above the rest, Russia's Evgenia Medvedeva, going
:26:14. > :26:21.for back-to-back titles. Let's see how this one worked out.
:26:22. > :26:29.COMMENTATOR: Another exciting young skater, just 17 years old, US
:26:30. > :26:40.national champion, newly crowned, Karen Chen. CO-COMMENTATOR: This
:26:41. > :26:44.programme could get out onto a podium, or at least, very close,
:26:45. > :27:03.if... If she skates her best. Overcooked the take-off on the
:27:04. > :30:57.double axle there. APPLAUSE.
:30:58. > :31:00.So, so close, just those last couple of mistakes. I think she's got a
:31:01. > :31:05.nasty cut on her leg as well after that fall. I could see some blood
:31:06. > :31:11.coming through her tights. Such a shame for her. It was a shame. She
:31:12. > :31:15.was flying through the first half of that programme and then it was just
:31:16. > :31:28.an unfortunate fall. It's a little hunchy in the
:31:29. > :31:31.shoulders. Tight in the upper body on the jumping you can see there.
:31:32. > :31:46.But makes the rotation easy. Fifth after the short programme.
:31:47. > :31:50.Going to be second possibly after this, or has she stayed ahead? Third
:31:51. > :32:08.in the free. So where does she go? Stays ahead in her first World
:32:09. > :32:25.Championship. The woman they've all been trying to
:32:26. > :32:30.beat since November 2015, Russia's unshakeable world champion, Evgenia
:32:31. > :32:33.Medvedeva, going for back-to-back world titles in Helsinki. Watch this
:32:34. > :33:20.one and marvel! Just 17. Triple flip. Triple toe loop with
:33:21. > :37:00.ease. Completely captivating! That surely
:37:01. > :37:06.is a gold medal performance. Yes. No-one will come close to that. Such
:37:07. > :37:11.theatre when she skates as well, she acts it, doesn't she? Zbloo bluely.
:37:12. > :37:16.It's fluid and there's not one move of a finger, a jump, a spin, a
:37:17. > :37:19.choreographic element, nothing that's not getting her points.
:37:20. > :37:23.There's nothing ex-trainious in that performance, and yet you don't think
:37:24. > :37:28.about points at all while you're watching her skate. Not at all. She
:37:29. > :37:41.is mesmerizing on the ice. Again, incredible technique. And
:37:42. > :37:43.every movement, every transition, every position is getting her
:37:44. > :38:01.points. The best of the best. That was a
:38:02. > :38:13.very special performance. 154 points. Top the free skate.
:38:14. > :38:33.Massive, massive score. Massive margin for the others to
:38:34. > :38:39.make up and we've only got two more skaters. The question is, how will
:38:40. > :38:44.these two Canadian girls stand up in a placement that they have seen
:38:45. > :38:47.themselves in before? Will they rise to the occasion or will it overawe
:38:48. > :39:20.them? Exquisite triple toe, triple toe.
:39:21. > :39:22.That particular move got her plus threes from every single judge in
:39:23. > :41:01.the short programme. Wonderful, double toe loop. Terrific
:41:02. > :41:10.height she gets on the jumps and now they're in complete control.
:41:11. > :43:06.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Great, great. Yes. She can't quite
:43:07. > :43:09.believe that either! There must be some magic out on the ice after that
:43:10. > :43:14.Evgenia Medvedeva skate. Well, I think this girl, the change in
:43:15. > :43:22.coaching schools has given her a whole new lease on life this season.
:43:23. > :43:27.She has always had this fire in this amazing speed across the ice but
:43:28. > :43:32.never this control. This is superb. Just a little bobble on the double
:43:33. > :43:42.axle but goodness me, the triples flew. The height and speed and
:43:43. > :43:45.control and the flow, beautiful. The same speed coming in and out of both
:43:46. > :44:06.triples. It's going to be a medal.
:44:07. > :44:14.Absolutely. What colour for now? Silver, behind Evgenia Medvedeva.
:44:15. > :44:19.Second place right now. She knows she's guaranteed a World
:44:20. > :44:21.Championship medal at this stage, Gabrielle Daleman. In a second
:44:22. > :44:47.she'll figure it out. Next, it's Caitlin Osmond. She broke
:44:48. > :44:52.her leg so missed the last Olympics. Hoping to be at the next Winter
:44:53. > :45:06.Olympics in February next year, before that hoping to pick up a
:45:07. > :45:09.world medal -- Kaetlyn Osmond. Kaetlyn Osmond. She broke her leg so
:45:10. > :45:11.missed the last Olympics. Hoping to be at the next Winter Olympics in
:45:12. > :45:13.February next year, before that hoping to pick up a world medal --
:45:14. > :45:28.Kaetlyn Osmond. That's the way to start, triple
:45:29. > :46:04.flip, triple toe loop. Hold on, triple axle, double toe
:46:05. > :46:07.loop. Kaetlyn is one of those skaters who jumps to her right, as
:46:08. > :47:04.opposed to the left. Good for you. Got that second triple
:47:05. > :49:13.flip. Points that were needed. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:49:14. > :49:20.Finished with a flourish. And he's Shappi. Is it going to be enough to
:49:21. > :49:24.get on that podium? No-one's done enough to topple Evgenia Medvedeva,
:49:25. > :49:28.we can safely say she's the champion, that won't come close to
:49:29. > :49:32.that. No, and Osmond does have a few points in the bag from her short
:49:33. > :49:42.programme on her team-mate but it's going to be very close.
:49:43. > :49:53.Great conviction. Got herself going. Double axle triple toe loop. Did so
:49:54. > :50:19.well not to put that hand down. Beautiful triple.
:50:20. > :50:33.Oh, Canada! And there it is! Silver for Osmond. Bronze for dale dale. So
:50:34. > :50:41.it's a can do two-three. They've done what loads of people said was
:50:42. > :50:48.not possible -- Canada two-three. Canada take silver and bronze. There
:50:49. > :50:53.is confirmation of the one, two, three. Evgenia Medvedeva once again
:50:54. > :50:56.Queen of the ice and an unforgettable performance from her
:50:57. > :51:02.and she's consolidated her place as the best in the world once again,
:51:03. > :51:10.head and shoulders above the rest in Helsinki and on for Olympic gold in
:51:11. > :51:14.the Olympics next year surely. Dale dale and Osmond take bronze and
:51:15. > :51:17.silver. Evgenia Medvedeva once again world champion. Are there any more
:51:18. > :51:22.superlatives we can use to describe her? It's extraordinary because
:51:23. > :51:29.there doesn't seem to be a nerve in her body in front of an audience or
:51:30. > :51:36.the judges. She comes alive the minute that music starts and yes,
:51:37. > :51:40.there's acting. In other people, it's totally believable. The quality
:51:41. > :51:43.of the elements and the jumps, the rotations, poxes, there isn't an
:51:44. > :51:48.ugly bone in her body when she skates and you forget, she's still a
:51:49. > :51:54.teenager. It's quite remarkable and those types of skaters come along
:51:55. > :52:00.once in a lifetime. She doesn't... Doesn't mean to say she can't be
:52:01. > :52:08.beaten but it's going to be extraordinary to see how this
:52:09. > :52:13.particular year plays out. Must be hers to lose pretty much? You would
:52:14. > :52:17.think that way but the number two Russian isn't able to compete
:52:18. > :52:21.because she's too young, twice junior world champion, so there's
:52:22. > :52:26.somebody else going to be knocking at the door going Evgenia, I'm
:52:27. > :52:30.behind you! The surprise outfit in the women's was the Canadians,
:52:31. > :52:32.silver and bronze? Fantastic performances from the two girls
:52:33. > :52:36.who've been bubbling around for a while. They are both incredible
:52:37. > :52:42.performers, but it was one in the short, one in the long, never quite
:52:43. > :52:45.together, new confidence, new coaching, new power and they were
:52:46. > :52:51.able to hold it together. That was the thing. Over a two-and-a-half
:52:52. > :52:55.minute short programme, a couple of elementses, that's one thing, then
:52:56. > :53:00.the pressure of coming out thinking, gosh, two of us on a podium position
:53:01. > :53:05.to this free skate, can we hold it together and make it happen. They
:53:06. > :53:09.did it in style. It was fantastic. There are others behind. The
:53:10. > :53:15.Japanese still have a great force of a team. But it wasn't their day
:53:16. > :53:20.today either. Really, really good for the two Canadians. Yes, great
:53:21. > :53:24.day for those. We always knew that Evgenia Medvedeva would be out on
:53:25. > :53:27.her own, she has been all season. In the men's competition though it was
:53:28. > :53:35.always going to be a much closer affair. Who would come out on top
:53:36. > :53:47.would be anyone's guess but we knew it would be a quad fest. A skating
:53:48. > :53:51.superstar for you, fifth after the short programme, he through away the
:53:52. > :53:56.world title last year, had a lead but a couple of mistakes meant
:53:57. > :53:58.Javier Fernandez came back and won it and he had to settle for silver.
:53:59. > :56:12.Looking to go one better this year. Effortless triple flip coming in the
:56:13. > :56:43.middle of a step sequence just out of nowhere.
:56:44. > :56:58.Quadruple then triple. Beautiful. Absolutely on form.
:56:59. > :57:29.Just want to point out that, the jump elements that come in the
:57:30. > :58:23.second half of the routine get a bonus. Triple axle.
:58:24. > :58:41.The final jump element for him. Just to finish it off.
:58:42. > :58:49.Shivers! Cool as a cucumber. He is something special. Mistakes cost him
:58:50. > :58:56.the world title last year round. No such problems this time. That was
:58:57. > :59:00.sublime. He was down in fifth after the short programme. Do you think
:59:01. > :59:09.that's enough to earn him a podium? Oh, yes. I'm being emphatic because
:59:10. > :59:14.you can't and no-one will, even Javier will not have the delicacy of
:59:15. > :59:17.this jumping, this technique. It's delicate even though he's flying
:59:18. > :59:19.through the air and forcing his body to do the quads. They're light and
:59:20. > :59:42.elegant. Over 200 points! Only over 200
:59:43. > :59:54.points(!) LAUGHTER 321.59! That is enormous!
:59:55. > :00:05.Moving on to the 19-year-old, another youngster, Boyang Jin, and
:00:06. > :00:11.some say that we could see five here as well. He needs five quads,
:00:12. > :00:37.because there is not a lot of quality packaging around.
:00:38. > :01:07.Also, a quad Lutz to open. That is massive! Goodness me... Flu, 16.2
:01:08. > :01:32.seven. -- just flew, 16.27. Quad Salchow.
:01:33. > :02:37.Triple Axel Lu, triple Salchow. -- triple Axel loop.
:02:38. > :05:05.Four more quads. And the quality of the jumping, doesn't always come
:05:06. > :05:15.together. But today, when it mattered... All four showed up, and
:05:16. > :05:24.the triple Axel in some form. Quadruple Lutz. Nice soft knee bend
:05:25. > :05:33.on the landing as well. Gave himself so much time to complete it.
:05:34. > :05:50.Look at the difference in technical against presentation. Silver
:05:51. > :06:00.medallist at the moment. Breaks the 300 barrier, but still a long way.
:06:01. > :06:08.Full list performance. -- faultless. And ultimate skater, Shoma Uno. --
:06:09. > :06:13.penultimate. Japanese national champion, at the youth Olympics, --
:06:14. > :06:19.youth Olympics champion, and this year he beat Yuzuru Hanyu, he has
:06:20. > :06:53.what it takes to knock his countrymen off the top spot.
:06:54. > :08:44.Completely wrong for the take-off on the Lutz.
:08:45. > :09:20.Lovely spread eagle into a triple Axel.
:09:21. > :10:24.There is another one, quads number four.
:10:25. > :10:50.Triple axle triple flip. Goodness me.
:10:51. > :11:02.Fantastic spin. Absolutely brilliant. I don't think it is
:11:03. > :11:11.questionable that we will have a Japanese one to at the end of this.
:11:12. > :11:21.Power, passion, and surely, a podium position. Absolutely. Quad flip.
:11:22. > :11:32.Slightly over rotated with the body, able to counterbalance himself and
:11:33. > :11:38.make it happen. This was exquisite. Triple axle, triple toe loop.
:11:39. > :11:44.Choreography even works with the music in slow motion!
:11:45. > :12:03.There we go. 94, for the presentation.
:12:04. > :12:18.Currently, in second place... Second place, with one skater left to go.
:12:19. > :12:22.This is the man who will decide where the Japanese skaters end up on
:12:23. > :12:28.the podium, defending world champion, European champion, won his
:12:29. > :12:33.fifth straight title this year, a leader after this short programme,
:12:34. > :13:04.Javier Hernandez, going for three consecutive world titles.
:13:05. > :13:31.Quad Salchow triple toe loop, little iffy on the landing. No more
:13:32. > :13:50.mistakes like that, please! Salchow... Do you think that is the
:13:51. > :15:51.gold medal gone...? Yes. Triple flip, half loop, into the
:15:52. > :15:58.triple Sakho. Double of sorts. -- into the triple Salchow. But
:15:59. > :17:11.something is slightly off, all the way through.
:17:12. > :17:23.APPLAUSE Such a showman, such a shame, we
:17:24. > :17:26.watched, open-mouthed, his performance when he won the World
:17:27. > :17:28.Championship last year, but the magic was missing this time round,
:17:29. > :17:33.there will be no gold medal. Silver is even questionable at the moment.
:17:34. > :17:43.Just felt slightly cautious on the back foot, right from the beginning.
:17:44. > :17:55.First quad, glorious. Quad Salchow, triple toe, foot down, but made it,
:17:56. > :17:59.at such an angle on the take-off, you could see the body... Was not
:18:00. > :18:28.even close to a recovery position. May even be off the podium. Is he
:18:29. > :18:32.off the podium? Heartbreaking. Last year 's world champion misses out on
:18:33. > :18:35.a podium spot. That was the difference, right there.
:18:36. > :18:48.Japan leads the way, once again, Jin Boyang takes bronze, Shoma Uno take
:18:49. > :18:50.silver, Yuzuru Hanyu, reigning Olympic and now reigning world
:18:51. > :18:55.champion, less than one-year to go to the next Olympics. Still the one
:18:56. > :19:03.to beat for the rest of the world. STUDIO: The Japanese dominating
:19:04. > :19:06.things as far as the men are concerned, what a surprise to see
:19:07. > :19:12.Javier Hernandez crashing out and coming forth, the world champion
:19:13. > :19:18.last year. This is what makes him so special to watch, you don't know if
:19:19. > :19:26.it will be complete, flawless at the beginning and then began to fall
:19:27. > :19:29.apart. He knows what Yuzuru Hanyu can do, he sees in everyday in
:19:30. > :19:34.training, it was not so much a disappointment as it was a
:19:35. > :19:39.resignation. Today was not my day. Don't discount him for the season to
:19:40. > :19:45.come. It was a disappointing finish for him but my goodness how he was
:19:46. > :19:48.on fire, absolutely flawless. Completely flawless, and a Japanese
:19:49. > :19:58.1-2, will they be the ones to beat come the Olympics, the strength in
:19:59. > :20:01.depth in the men's competition is so rich. It is incredibly strong, there
:20:02. > :20:03.was a time when a triple axle guaranteed you being in the final.
:20:04. > :20:06.Now, it is four, and in fact, people did not even make the final with a
:20:07. > :20:11.quad, so the depth of men's skating is ridiculous right out, so strong
:20:12. > :20:16.and so powerful. To say that these two are the ones to watch, Shoma
:20:17. > :20:21.Uno, he is young, he has it coming along, new knows what Javier
:20:22. > :20:24.Hernandez is capable of doing, he knows what he is capable of doing
:20:25. > :20:31.but there is Sam Young Russians, some Japanese and Chinese. -- Javier
:20:32. > :20:38.Fernandez. Taking the bronze medal, for Jin Boyang, having that come
:20:39. > :20:41.through, that was fantastic. 56, Americans, Canadians, they know what
:20:42. > :20:48.it will take and it will come down to who does what on the night when
:20:49. > :20:54.the music plays. Too close to call, the Olympic competition, but we have
:20:55. > :20:58.to talk about the quads, 43! What a silly number(!) when we would doing
:20:59. > :21:04.the event, I was only counting the ones that were landing pristinely,
:21:05. > :21:09.others we were given credit for but were not perfect. How about the
:21:10. > :21:12.scores? They are going through the roof, you need to break the 300
:21:13. > :21:21.barrier if you want to get onto the podium, that is the end of it. Watch
:21:22. > :21:24.the cumulation going up, a quad with combinations is going to give you a
:21:25. > :21:26.giant score of 17 points plus. But you cannot forget that there is
:21:27. > :21:29.other scores you need to get, you have got to make sure that you level
:21:30. > :21:35.four, make sure you will get the points on the spin as well. While
:21:36. > :21:39.you also watching these go up on the corner of your screen, also judges
:21:40. > :21:43.looking at those quads, and the spins, going, yes, that was really
:21:44. > :21:49.good, plus three. That will make that accumulate to go up. Or, yes,
:21:50. > :21:56.they did it, was not triggered, I am giving that minus two. You will see
:21:57. > :21:59.a drop down again. It is only really an indicator of what you are going
:22:00. > :22:01.to get and also in terms of the technical score, once the
:22:02. > :22:04.performance is finished, the judge will say, I'm looking at the
:22:05. > :22:10.interpretation, the choreography, a grade of executions. Ultimately,
:22:11. > :22:13.then you have a second score, with components that make up the
:22:14. > :22:21.performance, added together, that will give you 300 plus in men's. In
:22:22. > :22:24.all the disciplines. Yes, you want to make sure you can tick the boxes
:22:25. > :22:27.to get the points on the accumulator. It is all about the
:22:28. > :22:32.package overall that will make you the champion. Whatever the purple
:22:33. > :22:34.box in the top left of the screen, particularly when it comes to the
:22:35. > :22:38.ice dance, difficult to spot the component elements, they are not
:22:39. > :22:44.doing jumps and lifts, ice dance, all about performance, they wrapped
:22:45. > :22:48.up proceedings in Helsinki but a couple of notable absentees,
:22:49. > :22:54.unfortunately, Nick Bakker men and Penny Coomes have missed the whole
:22:55. > :22:57.of the season, because Penny suffered a terrible injury, they had
:22:58. > :23:03.to sit out this World Championships too. I feel like I have this warmth
:23:04. > :23:07.and light inside of me when I get back out on the ice. This injury
:23:08. > :23:19.really has brought me back to that love and that passion. I don't think
:23:20. > :23:22.I will ever not appreciate it again. Nick and I had come of our most
:23:23. > :23:32.successful season, just finished seventh in the world, two
:23:33. > :23:34.personal-best skates, best scores we ever had, everything was going
:23:35. > :23:39.really well, unfortunately, one day, we had this awful accident. -- won
:23:40. > :23:40.two personal-best skates. We were laughing and giggling one minute,
:23:41. > :23:53.and the floor, screaming. It is torture, so painful, worst
:23:54. > :23:57.thing ever. I broke my kneecap, smashed into eight pieces. -- on the
:23:58. > :24:01.floor. My kneecap sprung open, there were bones on top of my skin and on
:24:02. > :24:08.the love a quad, it looked pretty terrible. -- and on the lower what.
:24:09. > :24:14.They said it was a career ending injury, that I had completely messed
:24:15. > :24:17.up my knee, that I would not be able to walk properly for the rest of my
:24:18. > :24:22.life. All these things. It wears on you and you question yourself,
:24:23. > :24:26.whether you can do it again. First three months were extremely hard,
:24:27. > :24:37.far harder than both of us ever thought it was going to be. It is
:24:38. > :24:39.hard as a partner because you are there and cannot do anything to
:24:40. > :24:41.help. Getting ice, getting her something to eat, simple things, you
:24:42. > :24:53.really learn to appreciate health and how important that is. I was
:24:54. > :24:55.stuck in my room for a long time, very unwell for a long time, sick
:24:56. > :25:01.from medication... In a lot of pain... I was miserable. I lost
:25:02. > :25:05.myself for a while. I was heartbroken. It sounds like such a
:25:06. > :25:07.cliched thing to say and over the top, but it felt like somebody had
:25:08. > :25:18.died, I was mourning something. Nine months and two operations
:25:19. > :25:23.later, Penny is back on the ice. I feel fine. I know I keep saying it
:25:24. > :25:32.but I cannot believe that. They are targeting a third Winter Olympics in
:25:33. > :25:36.2018. That feels a bit dodg, not yet! Now that I am back on the ice
:25:37. > :25:47.and I have that feeling back, my legs back to normal, I have some way
:25:48. > :25:51.to go, but I feel optimistic. I do not have a spot yet but in my head,
:25:52. > :25:55.I have, I am ready to go! It could have been next season. Jim coming
:25:56. > :26:00.up, that would have been it. It's just, it just shows how sport is on
:26:01. > :26:07.a balance. Things can be taken away just like that. I felt like I had
:26:08. > :26:09.this alien knee, and now I have got on and I feel like I have got my leg
:26:10. > :26:17.back! I knew that I would go to the
:26:18. > :26:22.Olympics no matter what, that is the person I am, whether it I was in
:26:23. > :26:26.pain and it crippled me for the rest of my life, I would get there! To
:26:27. > :26:33.get on, I feel like I have that normal knee again. It fills me with
:26:34. > :26:38.hope that I am going to be able to do it and that dream that I have has
:26:39. > :26:42.not diminished. It is there, I just need to work harder and a little
:26:43. > :26:50.more time but I am going to get there. Great to see Nick and Penny,
:26:51. > :26:53.Penny in particular, back on the ice, you know them very well, worked
:26:54. > :27:00.with them, how serious was that injury, and how close is Penny to a
:27:01. > :27:02.full recovery, being able to escape these routines we are about to what?
:27:03. > :27:05.It was horrific, firstly, and to see what she had to go through and the
:27:06. > :27:12.disappointment of seeing the entire season dissipate before them...
:27:13. > :27:15.Having said that now, seeing her back on the ice, having spoken to
:27:16. > :27:24.her, that she is back in training, pain-free, they are so hungry, and
:27:25. > :27:26.she has... Her resilience is incredible, I have never known
:27:27. > :27:28.anybody to be knocked around like Penny, she is this big, and yet
:27:29. > :27:35.machine says, don't mess with me. Fully on track. Watching this, it
:27:36. > :27:38.will spur them on. They are disappointed they are not in the
:27:39. > :27:43.championship but Babel be saying, we can do that, we can be in the mix.
:27:44. > :27:49.They can be in the mix. I have said before, gold, silver, these two at
:27:50. > :27:55.the top are pretty much unbeatable, who will get what, but five or six
:27:56. > :27:59.other couples are bubbling under, they have missed the season... But,
:28:00. > :28:05.they will come back... They will make the qualifications in Germany
:28:06. > :28:13.in the summer, then there will be Grands Prix and I am hoping for good
:28:14. > :28:18.seasons. So they can prove everyone wrong. That a shame they are not
:28:19. > :28:24.competing in Helsinki, back on the ice, had to sit this one out.
:28:25. > :28:30.Actively action in Helsinki. -- such a shame.
:28:31. > :28:34.COMMENTATOR: Bronze at last year's world's, they currently lie in
:28:35. > :33:04.fourth. And perhaps the pressure told. It
:33:05. > :33:11.was all going so well. It was magnificent up to that point. They
:33:12. > :33:14.know it's a very costly error. He was well out and struggled to get
:33:15. > :33:34.back into it, didn't he? Shibutanis are up representing the
:33:35. > :38:27.USA. Let us see what they can do. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:38:28. > :38:30.Very precise skating Before- but they've been criticised in the past
:38:31. > :38:35.that because they're brother and sister there is a romance missing,
:38:36. > :38:39.an intensity missing. It's got to have a completely different dynamic
:38:40. > :38:42.and they've been, accused is probably the wrong word, but it's
:38:43. > :38:48.always quite flat and clinical because their skating is so precise
:38:49. > :38:51.and so clean. The ankle down, the footwork, I really actually enjoyed
:38:52. > :38:53.this performance because it came alive towards the end and the
:38:54. > :39:33.personalities did come out. So be prepared now for something
:39:34. > :39:42.rather special. Two-time and reigning world champions, Gabriella
:39:43. > :39:47.Papadakis and Cizeron of France Guillaume. They have settled for
:39:48. > :39:52.second most of the season, beaten by the Canadians. They're r they're not
:39:53. > :40:59.far behind them here. Could claim Third World title.
:41:00. > :44:13.Beautiful through that sequence. Absolutely perfect.
:44:14. > :44:21.They skate with such fluidity. Everything emphasised by the long,
:44:22. > :44:29.languid limbs. Yes, it's extraordinary. I know you say they
:44:30. > :44:34.churn out a similar performance every time... But emotionally today,
:44:35. > :44:38.they really nailed it. She got right into it. You could see her in the
:44:39. > :44:40.middle even becoming part of it, it wasn't an act, this is genuine
:44:41. > :45:04.feeling. When you produce your season's best,
:45:05. > :45:13.it's when you want to push for a medal. 196.04, there you go.
:45:14. > :45:23.And these are the Canadians, the resurgent 2010 Olympic champions, a
:45:24. > :45:27.heart-breaking silver for them in Sophy, they took two years away but
:45:28. > :46:15.they are back and they are the ones to beat.
:46:16. > :46:19.Again, absolutely sublime. It's like they were attached together by a
:46:20. > :49:42.thread. APPLAUSE.
:49:43. > :49:51.You said the title was theirs to lose. How crucial will that mistake
:49:52. > :49:59.be? It does just take that bit of wind out of the sails. The skating
:50:00. > :50:16.quality is exquisite, still the same as it was.
:50:17. > :50:45.It was a good save because that could have been an on the floor...
:50:46. > :50:57.So behind the French in the free skate but they have that cushion.
:50:58. > :51:04.The cushion just enough to save them. Just two points in it. Between
:51:05. > :51:18.gold and silver. Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donoghue
:51:19. > :51:20.weren't expected to be the top rated American couple here, but they are
:51:21. > :54:45.in third going for a podium place. That 'll be the bronze medal gone.
:54:46. > :54:52.Yes. There was barely a point in it after the short programme. So they
:54:53. > :55:36.have no margin for error. APPLAUSE.
:55:37. > :55:45.So, so tough for Madison Hubble and Zachary Donohue. He's so gutted.
:55:46. > :55:56.We said the margins were so tight. That has nothing to do with purely
:55:57. > :56:06.the fall. Technically not as strong as some of the other couples.
:56:07. > :56:10.Confirmation then that the Canadian comeback is completed. It was that
:56:11. > :56:14.world record-breaking skate in the short programme that saved them,
:56:15. > :56:19.giving them a lead over their French rivals. The French have silver this
:56:20. > :56:26.time around and the American brother and sister, Maia and Alex Shibutani
:56:27. > :56:30.take the bronze. The Canadians out in front, as they have been all
:56:31. > :56:36.season, but it was always going to be a tight run thing with the
:56:37. > :56:39.foreign. The French skated beautifully tonight. They have been
:56:40. > :56:45.doing it all season. For me, there was an extra something that happened
:56:46. > :56:48.on the ice, they felt the emotion. The Canadians were technically
:56:49. > :56:54.brilliant. Overall it was the right decision. It's such a hotly
:56:55. > :56:57.contested event now, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. Anyone could
:56:58. > :57:01.have been up there but the Shibutanis took that spot. Very
:57:02. > :57:07.consistent aren't they, and a very competitive US team going into the
:57:08. > :57:13.Olympics too? Very strong US team and theion Arnies are incredibly
:57:14. > :57:16.clinical and clean -- Shibutanis. Sometimes people say, you know what
:57:17. > :57:21.you are going to get every day all the time. There's something to be
:57:22. > :57:26.said for being consistent so it will be an exciting season for them and
:57:27. > :57:30.the others behind them. And for Penny and Nick, where do you think
:57:31. > :57:34.they could have ended up? I don't want to say, but if you do look at
:57:35. > :57:39.the results and you see how close it is, maybe not between one and two,
:57:40. > :57:45.but three, four, five, six and seven. They absolutely would have
:57:46. > :57:48.been in that mix and pushing for a medal I'm sure. This World
:57:49. > :57:52.Championships hasn't disappointed in terms of the quality and
:57:53. > :57:56.performances. It's been magnificent? Incredibly amazing. Again, this is
:57:57. > :58:02.the road to Pyongyang starting. This is the level it's starting at. I
:58:03. > :58:07.cannot wait to see what the season has to offer and how we unup with
:58:08. > :58:13.the podiumings in Pyongyang. Thank you very much -- podiums. That is it
:58:14. > :58:17.for BBC Two. Plenty of live sport coming up, BBC One at 4 o'clock for
:58:18. > :58:24.the boat race, coverage starts at 4. The women's race at 4. 35. And the
:58:25. > :58:29.men an hour later at 5. 35. That's just about it from Robin and I for
:58:30. > :58:32.the coverage of the World Figure Skating Championships, 2017. Thank
:58:33. > :58:36.you so much for all your expertise Robin and your brilliant company as
:58:37. > :58:40.well. My pleasure. And thank you very much to everyone watching at
:58:41. > :58:43.home as well. With under a year to go to the Winter Olympics in South
:58:44. > :58:44.Korea now, the world's best have once again reached new heights.
:58:45. > :59:24.Goodbye. Stacey and Chris are preparing for
:59:25. > :59:26.marriage by spending a few days living alone with
:59:27. > :59:29.their in-laws to be, and asking them all kinds of
:59:30. > :59:32.questions. Did you get a kiss on
:59:33. > :59:34.the first date? No. What does their in-laws' marriage
:59:35. > :59:38.tell them about each other's
