:00:39. > :00:45.Hello everyone and welcome to a packed Potters resort in Yarmouth
:00:46. > :00:50.for BA World Indoor Bowls Championships. Yesterday there was
:00:51. > :00:54.high drama on the blue rink. Today there is promise of more drama to
:00:55. > :01:06.come because the second trophy of the week is on the line. He is
:01:07. > :01:13.drawing for the match. On Monday a dramatic finish to the pairs final.
:01:14. > :01:24.Today Potters the mixed pair title is at stake. It is the event I have
:01:25. > :01:34.not one. It is a challenge, but I'm looking forward to it. After
:01:35. > :01:44.recently breaking into the world top 16, Jamie is taken on Paxton. The
:01:45. > :01:56.ambition has two B to win the world indoor single. Yesterday was a
:01:57. > :02:00.fantastic day. The last bowl of the match coming through to win the
:02:01. > :02:06.pairs final. David Corkill alongside me. Yesterday was fantastic. I said
:02:07. > :02:10.the promise of more drama to come. We have Paul Foster and Rebecca
:02:11. > :02:15.Field up against Nick Brett and Claire Johnston. Welcome we expect?
:02:16. > :02:22.Three out of the four have been major finals. It is all new to
:02:23. > :02:27.Claire Johnston. She is used to big events playing outdoors, but she
:02:28. > :02:35.should relish this. Why is this event so different? There is no
:02:36. > :02:39.atmosphere like it. When it comes to an enclosed arena, the cameras are
:02:40. > :02:45.over you, it is very interesting and some people either it some don't.
:02:46. > :02:52.These guys will love it it. We also have singles action. Eight still
:02:53. > :02:59.left in the drawn. How of the line-up have we got. It doesn't get
:03:00. > :03:11.any better. Coming through the second round is harder. There will
:03:12. > :03:29.be surprises. One of our former champions was in action. Greg Harlow
:03:30. > :03:41.took on James Ripley. James Ripley face this encounter with Greg
:03:42. > :03:54.Harlow. Harlow, making his 20 of the parents produced a great reply. He
:03:55. > :03:57.moved into a 4-2 lead. The champion from 2010 turned the screw and this
:03:58. > :04:07.single in the eighth was enough to take the first set with and end to
:04:08. > :04:12.spare. James Rippey works for an attic company in the city. He had
:04:13. > :04:17.his family for support and they provided inspiration early in the
:04:18. > :04:27.second set as he built up a four shot lead after the first two ends.
:04:28. > :04:32.Harlow fought back as the 48-year-old used all his experience
:04:33. > :04:36.to take control of the match. James Rippey did not give up. He held his
:04:37. > :04:43.nerve and grabbed three shots. He took the match to a tie-break. After
:04:44. > :04:52.swapping the first to ends it came down to the last web James Rippey
:04:53. > :04:59.left it too. But Harlow played this fantastic running shot to snatch
:05:00. > :05:02.victory from the jaws of defeat. So Greg Harlow is the first player
:05:03. > :05:04.through in the second round after that defeat of James Rippey.
:05:05. > :05:28.Elsewhere some really good mash ups. But now it is time to get ready for
:05:29. > :05:33.our second championship match of the week. It is the final of the mixed
:05:34. > :05:41.pairs. Let's confirm the line-up. Paul Foster accompanied by Rebecca
:05:42. > :05:48.Field. Scotland and England. Nick Brett and Claire Johnston. We can
:05:49. > :05:55.hear from all four players featuring in today's final. I am looking
:05:56. > :05:59.forward to the final. It's great to reach any final whether it is a
:06:00. > :06:02.single, pairs or mixed pairs. It is good to get to the final after
:06:03. > :06:20.losing last year. It's been really great. What number are you in the
:06:21. > :06:29.world ranking? Number six. As former world number one, it was daunting. I
:06:30. > :06:39.have watched numerous matches and being on the rink as any of the top
:06:40. > :06:47.eight is an honour. Next one is World Matchplay. She is at the top
:06:48. > :06:52.of the women's game. Paul Foster has won everything in the men's game, so
:06:53. > :06:55.it won't be easy. It's not everyday you play with the world number one
:06:56. > :07:13.or the world champion, so I'll enjoy it. I try to enjoy edge -- encourage
:07:14. > :07:17.clear where I can. -- Claire. We have got on very well. We let each
:07:18. > :07:22.other play and it has worked well. We have good banter during the day
:07:23. > :07:31.and it relaxes me. It is a joy. It's the first time I have been in the
:07:32. > :07:36.final and it is the event I have one. It will be a challenge, but I'm
:07:37. > :07:37.looking forward to it. All players seem to be getting on well. This is
:07:38. > :07:56.how they made it through. So we are just about set for the
:07:57. > :08:09.second trophy match of the week. We will hand over to our MC.
:08:10. > :08:15.Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, Rebecca Field and Paul Foster MBA.
:08:16. > :08:38.-- MBE. And our next received a standing
:08:39. > :08:42.ovation after the thrilling performance in the quarterfinals.
:08:43. > :08:47.They're hoping to create that form in this final, will you please
:08:48. > :09:04.welcome Claire Johnston and world number one Nick Brett!
:09:05. > :09:16.Four players of the very highest order. Off we go to the commentary
:09:17. > :09:27.box. Andy Thompson along David Corkill. Three players very much use
:09:28. > :09:31.high-profile event here at Potters Resort. Claire Johnston is the only
:09:32. > :09:40.unknown, but only from the point of indoors. She is a world-class player
:09:41. > :09:44.outdoors. Yes, top-class outdoor. She's just back from New Zealand and
:09:45. > :09:46.will be playing with a lot of confidence. This will be a fantastic
:09:47. > :10:53.game. Looking forward to it. Good start. A couple of feet. There
:10:54. > :11:00.will be a little bit nervous. Three bowls, mixed pairs. A change from
:11:01. > :11:13.previous years when it was too. Nine ends. Plenty of time for them to get
:11:14. > :11:18.into the match. Had a quick word with Claire as she was practising.
:11:19. > :11:23.She was wondering what it was all about, just looking around. It's so
:11:24. > :11:29.unusual, it really is. You know what it is like Andy, you travel around
:11:30. > :11:34.the world and they think to themselves, that is called John. I
:11:35. > :11:38.can understand the way she is feeling. It is a daunting prospect
:11:39. > :11:44.just walking out in front of everyone. This is a final on TV. It
:11:45. > :11:57.is a tension filled event, but it is fantastic. This is what players
:11:58. > :12:09.think about. -- dream about. A bit of a nervy start from Claire. Just
:12:10. > :12:21.going to nestle in with her other green bowl. Handy there. I fully
:12:22. > :12:28.expect Nick Brett and Paul Foster to cancel each other out. Yes, I think
:12:29. > :12:34.we all witnessed the semifinal. Mickey Brett against Alex Marshall.
:12:35. > :12:42.It was just unbelievable bowls. I'm sure Nick will be hoping that he can
:12:43. > :12:43.produce that form again today. Paul and Rebecca will put him under
:12:44. > :13:20.pressure quite a bit. It looks like he has played it first
:13:21. > :13:26.time. That is what you dream about. The key to this will be instructions
:13:27. > :13:30.as well coming from the two leads. Scripts aren't allowed up until the
:13:31. > :13:38.second bowl. There has to be a certain amount of communication
:13:39. > :13:42.there. I spread to Rebecca about that. It's one thing she felt
:13:43. > :13:46.daunted by, the thought of telling Paul Foster what to play. It is
:13:47. > :13:48.quite a daunting prospect as you say, telling a top-class player what
:13:49. > :14:00.to do. The -- the same with Claire as well.
:14:01. > :14:06.Only a few people have got experience on the portable rink. You
:14:07. > :14:13.will be saying to yourself, how do I instruct these guys? The men will
:14:14. > :14:18.play the shot they feel best, but they will take instructions from the
:14:19. > :14:29.partner if they feel they can do something else. Has he got enough
:14:30. > :14:34.weight to pass that? No he hasn't. Everyone has been playing the
:14:35. > :14:46.drawing bowl in the opening end. Nick to square off the double.
:14:47. > :14:56.Good opening bowl. You would've thought he would have added with the
:14:57. > :16:12.second or third, but happy the one. -- with the one.
:16:13. > :16:18.Both the girls choosing to lead on the forehand side. Claire is
:16:19. > :16:22.left-handed, so it is the background, but most will lead on
:16:23. > :16:31.the other. They do feel comfortable though. It is hard to get it
:16:32. > :16:38.absolutely right. Slightly over the weight. Most of the other plays are
:16:39. > :16:56.leading off of the other side in this direction. Yes they are, David.
:16:57. > :17:04.She started well. I think this one needs to stop as well. Just a bit
:17:05. > :17:09.heavy. Extra weight and it when Paul back in time. Tighten the line quite
:17:10. > :17:25.considerably, but still was not making it. Understandably Claire is
:17:26. > :17:35.a bit nervous. She'll soon settled. Very good goals from Rebecca. --
:17:36. > :17:41.bowls. Nick will probably draw with the first one, but the option is
:17:42. > :17:44.there to hit it. He probably favours the backhand, so I won't be
:17:45. > :17:58.surprised if this is a backhand draw.
:17:59. > :18:24.Very close... Just 18 inches through.
:18:25. > :18:43.Clever-macro you are in, well played.
:18:44. > :18:53.For down but I think he has drawn the shop. -- four down but I think
:18:54. > :19:12.he has drawn the shot. The forehand option as well. The
:19:13. > :19:20.forehand offers two things. It offers his own bowls and the jack.
:19:21. > :19:26.Just a little push and it will come in time behind it. More options are
:19:27. > :19:40.more chances on the forehand. Very close. He is unlucky. He pushed it
:19:41. > :19:44.right through. Of course the players have the opportunity to see the head
:19:45. > :19:51.with the overhead camera on the big screen as well and assess the
:19:52. > :19:57.situation very clearly. Claire trying to push that one up. Paul has
:19:58. > :20:04.to be a little bit careful as well here, David. He'd dance. He has got
:20:05. > :20:09.one lurking around there at the back. I know he pushed one through.
:20:10. > :20:20.I'm not sure if it is still there or not, I can't see it. Paul is not
:20:21. > :20:29.sure whose line. Rebecca said it was definitely cream. The marker
:20:30. > :20:36.suggested it is definitely cream. Paul is overly convinced. There is
:20:37. > :20:40.the one lurking at the back I was talking about. That is the protector
:20:41. > :20:47.for Paul and I won't be surprised if he plays it again. He will either
:20:48. > :20:51.play the two bowls out all legit. Catch in the bowls, slicing the
:20:52. > :21:01.jack, as you say, it is going to be positive. Close. That was unlucky. I
:21:02. > :21:15.thought the two bowls were going there. Very close but it is one to
:21:16. > :21:20.Mickey Brett. -- Nick Brett. There was a connection. Might of disturbed
:21:21. > :22:08.it sufficiently. One shot. Brett and Johnston. Steady
:22:09. > :22:20.staff. That is the voice of the umpire, Alan Thornhill. He is -- of
:22:21. > :22:28.the marker on the rink sort out things for the guys. He is doing a
:22:29. > :22:33.good job. Fairly new to the sport. He is more than competent. The
:22:34. > :22:40.incompetence is not good enough at this level, you have to be more than
:22:41. > :22:46.competent and he is. A confident person. I spoken to one or two of
:22:47. > :22:51.the umpires and they say it is different to what they do back home
:22:52. > :22:52.and it is a nervy experience. Dan has taken that on board and he is
:22:53. > :23:21.doing a great job. That is the partner of Rebecca
:23:22. > :23:28.Field. I think it is her fiance now. He's a painter and decorator. He's
:23:29. > :23:35.taken a few days off to watch her. A lot of five litre tins about the
:23:36. > :23:45.place. A good player himself. Did well in the Scottish International
:23:46. > :23:58.Open. At the moment, Rebecca is winning believes. -- the leads. He
:23:59. > :24:04.lost in the quarterfinal to Greg Harlow. I thought it was a good
:24:05. > :24:12.performance though. I love it when you asked me these questions. But
:24:13. > :24:24.you always have the answers. People and enjoy themselves at night. Facts
:24:25. > :24:28.are just floating about in there. Here Arms, looking good again. She
:24:29. > :24:35.just wants to slip past the jack with this one and turn it. Yes,
:24:36. > :24:38.little term, that is good. Unfortunately, she has bounced it
:24:39. > :24:45.and framed it and you can see the wry smile from Paul. Nick will be
:24:46. > :24:51.right at that. We will see the first forehand runner. Good lead from
:24:52. > :25:01.Rebecca. We will see the forehand runner, I think. Very controlled.
:25:02. > :25:06.That is not a weight that he would normally play. I think what he was
:25:07. > :25:11.tempted to do their was to convert rather than push it right through. I
:25:12. > :25:16.think we will see more weight than next time. I don't think he will
:25:17. > :25:22.make that same mistake twice. Now he is going for cover. Definitely a
:25:23. > :25:36.conversion shot rather than trying to trail it through the two green
:25:37. > :25:40.bowls. Slightly more power. Yes, definitely stronger. Just needs to
:25:41. > :25:49.get down to get to the bowl and the jack. He has locked it in. Good
:25:50. > :25:58.bowl, maximum results. More pace on the forehand this time. Pushes the
:25:59. > :26:05.jack through, perfect result. He is doing the damage at the moment. It
:26:06. > :26:10.is hard to drop with that red one coming in. He could use it as a
:26:11. > :26:15.shoulder, but it's not easy, so he is going for the weight. He needs
:26:16. > :26:30.help from the front one. That was close! Nick will have to draw this.
:26:31. > :26:35.Certainly hasn't got the sport on one side, but the two bowls could
:26:36. > :26:40.disappear. There is plenty of room to draw a third, he's got at least a
:26:41. > :26:55.yard. I expect the third shot to come in now. That's number three.
:26:56. > :26:58.Very good bowling from Nicky Brett. I think we will see a big drive
:26:59. > :27:07.here. He goes faster on his forehand. That is hard on the
:27:08. > :27:17.backhand. It sweeps away so quick. Even for the best players, that is a
:27:18. > :27:28.difficult shot. Three shots, Brett and Johnston.
:27:29. > :28:24.Two or three bowls within 18 inches, there will be very happy with that.
:28:25. > :28:34.Gives them the opportunity to develop things. Rebecca is playing
:28:35. > :28:42.really well, but Nick Brett is doing all the damage. Rebecca can't do any
:28:43. > :28:48.more, it just keeps drawing away. The thing for Claire is to keep
:28:49. > :28:52.plugging away at it, keep the bowls imposition, let Nick use them. She
:28:53. > :29:34.is close to this. It looks very good.
:29:35. > :29:38.Hang on as long as you can. Well played. Good stuff from Claire
:29:39. > :29:58.Johnston. Paul asking Rebecca to change her
:29:59. > :30:04.hand. Resting a green bowl, probably score a shot. The line is good, it's
:30:05. > :30:08.all about the place. Very close. Good effort. The reason why he
:30:09. > :30:14.didn't want to play the forehand is because the jack was coming into the
:30:15. > :30:23.green bowl. I can understand that. She was very close to making it.
:30:24. > :30:37.Once again, a packed auditorium. Not many spare seats there.
:30:38. > :30:48.Come on, all the way. He has really started well, has Niki Brett. He is
:30:49. > :31:04.pretty close again. The bowl stood up as well.
:31:05. > :31:23.Just getting in there can be difficult enough.
:31:24. > :31:30.Come on, come on. Well, Claire is calling. He must be close. He wants
:31:31. > :31:37.the jack into the other two bowls. Has he got enough? He has. Brilliant
:31:38. > :31:41.bowl. Brilliant. My goodness me, this is just unbelievable stuff.
:31:42. > :31:47.APPLAUSE What a trail is this. Just the jack,
:31:48. > :31:48.catches the two green bowls, lies two or three, brilliant. What sort
:31:49. > :31:58.of weight? Whatever you feel comfortable with,
:31:59. > :32:14.really, it's not - they're both touching.
:32:15. > :32:24.Oh, wow, gets a result. Well, he was right down the middle of it. Got the
:32:25. > :32:27.perfect result. I would play similar. You can change places with
:32:28. > :32:41.the bowl or turn your own. Well, Nicky, can you produce another
:32:42. > :32:59.big bowl? Slightly high. Too heavy. Well, if Paul Foster is lying, he
:33:00. > :33:05.will not be playing this. Even Paul Foster is asking for a second
:33:06. > :33:21.opinion. It must be very close. Paul is pretty good at looking at
:33:22. > :33:26.measures. REFEREE: Measure for shot. He can not be lying. If he was lying
:33:27. > :33:31.he would not be playing this. Well, he we'll see what weight he uses.
:33:32. > :33:32.Probably wants a little nudge on it. He is playing backhand. Very, very
:33:33. > :33:43.difficult. He is in the area to get his own
:33:44. > :33:49.bowl to turn it over. If he gets that solid, he might make it. Oh,
:33:50. > :33:55.it's going to fall back. What an effort. That was a great bowl. You
:33:56. > :34:00.couldn't ask for anything better than that. Superb. The other green
:34:01. > :34:04.bowls should be taken awakes I'm sure, it is between the two on the
:34:05. > :34:44.left side of the picture. Yes, that's it. -- taken away.
:34:45. > :34:59.This is a close one. One shot, Foster and Field. Well, my goodness
:35:00. > :35:04.me, that was close. There was about a millimetre in that one but good
:35:05. > :35:13.enough to get Paul Foster and Rebecca Field on the board. 5-1
:35:14. > :35:18.down. Top quality bowling. It just shows, you know, Paul Foster played
:35:19. > :35:21.that almost as if the shot was against him. They just couldn't tell
:35:22. > :35:29.and of course they are not allowed to measure before the completion of
:35:30. > :35:34.the end. He just about played it to perfection. But he will be happy to
:35:35. > :35:43.be on the board it's fair to say that Rebecca is leading very well
:35:44. > :35:47.for Paul. ! As did Claire, after the previous end, she settled well into
:35:48. > :35:49.the game. Quality bowling. Indeed. Well good end for Claire Johnston.
:35:50. > :36:06.It is a new experience for her. All the way down now. Decent well
:36:07. > :36:52.done. It looks like Nicky is urging this
:36:53. > :36:56.Paul up. I don't think it's going to have the running. That's not going
:36:57. > :37:02.to help with the next one. It has blocked the path out that one has.
:37:03. > :37:05.You can see, it is right in the path for the draw.
:37:06. > :37:24.About 10 inches past. Well, another bowl on the head. Claire's previous
:37:25. > :37:30.delivery has forced her on to the forehand side. A wee bit quick. It's
:37:31. > :37:38.all right. She said she was a bit quick. That's the case. In a game
:37:39. > :37:45.like this, a back bowl is always useful. And he's in the frightened
:37:46. > :37:49.to attack the head. I would agree, David, back bowls are always going
:37:50. > :37:51.to count in a game like this. Paul will be looking to draw the closest
:37:52. > :38:46.now. Paul just back needs a couple of
:38:47. > :38:55.feet from his previous delivery. Well done. Well, the only thing is,
:38:56. > :39:01.he can't really afford to attack this, Nick, he only has one bowl in
:39:02. > :39:05.there. Yes, just a backhand bowl. Yes, a bit like Paul, he needs to
:39:06. > :39:14.add a couple of feet. The line is good.
:39:15. > :39:20.He needed the shoulder. If he dropped in, it was a different type
:39:21. > :39:28.of shot available with his last bowl. It's a definite two.
:39:29. > :39:37.You definitely one against at the back. If I draw another one, they
:39:38. > :39:43.could probably run that. . Exactly. I think Paul is right but if Nick is
:39:44. > :39:46.going to run it, certainly on the forehand, I would say one of the red
:39:47. > :39:52.bowls almost certainly has to come through. I think so, I think it is a
:39:53. > :39:56.backhand draw. I think it is hard for Rebecca but Paul should be going
:39:57. > :39:58.up to have a lack and making the decision himself, really. You are
:39:59. > :40:03.one down out here and probably two out there. The different in
:40:04. > :40:07.experience is absolutely vast Like I said earlier, I think Rebecca finds
:40:08. > :40:10.it a little bit difficult sometimes to tell Paul. I think Paul he will
:40:11. > :40:19.just be drawing on the backhand. Well, definitely a cover bowl. I'm
:40:20. > :40:24.not sure if Nick will bother running this. It is a dangerous proposition.
:40:25. > :40:29.If he gets the front red on to his green bowl, he could easily be four
:40:30. > :40:33.down. Yes, that's why Paul should have had a look and probably he
:40:34. > :40:41.would have gone up and drawn another. Nicky can't afford to take
:40:42. > :40:56.his own bowl out. Nick will be playing backhand draw here, I think.
:40:57. > :41:11.Needed the shoulder off his bowl. Just didn't get down. He thought he
:41:12. > :41:16.was close, though. He is two out. He wants another one, call the umpire.
:41:17. > :41:21.He raised his hand, he wants the umpire to measure. I thought Nicky
:41:22. > :41:24.would have drawn. He had three goes at it. I don't think it is his
:41:25. > :41:26.favourite hand. Probably would have drawn on the forehand side but that
:41:27. > :41:38.was blocked out. Umpires are kited out in very nice
:41:39. > :41:55.black and white. Yes, very smart. It's quite forgiving.
:41:56. > :42:02.UMPIRE: Three shots, Foster and Field. Nicky won't be happy with
:42:03. > :42:09.that. Rebecca back into the game. I think it is fair they deserve to be
:42:10. > :42:14.making this game a bit tighter. I think it is definitely a more
:42:15. > :42:48.reflective scorepline of the match. I think it's fair. -- scoreline.
:42:49. > :42:55.Good start, Bec, well done. Other angles of the competition, the
:42:56. > :43:00.domestic game, as I call t how many markers and officials still turn up
:43:01. > :43:06.in their jackets, their glasses in the top pockets and pens falling out
:43:07. > :43:12.of their pockets. It's staggering, really, in a sport this... Well, a
:43:13. > :43:15.traditional sport, I think it is fair to say but changes are
:43:16. > :43:18.happening, really. I think you are well aware, international teenagers
:43:19. > :43:22.we again used to turn up in our blazers, we now turn up in our
:43:23. > :43:31.tracksuits, I think we are getting, shall we say, slightly more modern?
:43:32. > :43:42.Well, we have coverage in Wales and we'll be going to the First Minute's
:43:43. > :43:49.Question Time Assembly in Wales. I'll let you know when that is going
:43:50. > :43:52.to happen, but you can get us on the red button, but only in BBC Wales.
:43:53. > :44:07.Everyone else will be be able to enjoy this on BBC Two, live.
:44:08. > :44:13.Very good from Claire. It really is. Is best two opening bowls of the
:44:14. > :44:18.claim for Claire. Drop it, drop it. Come back.
:44:19. > :44:26.APPLAUSE Well, we'll be leaving very shortly
:44:27. > :44:28.for viewers in Wales. So if you want to keep watching, please move over
:44:29. > :45:17.to the red button. A super end of bowls from the leads.
:45:18. > :45:20.And that's the really difficulty in heads like this, we're now in a
:45:21. > :45:24.situation where the skips really need to look at this, andy, after
:45:25. > :45:30.the first bowl, it changed things. I'd agree. As we are all aware, the
:45:31. > :45:36.rules state, basically that skips can only come up after two bowls
:45:37. > :45:40.each have been played. That's why questions are often asked for often
:45:41. > :45:42.than not. Well Nicky is attacking this. Will he bend? I don't think he
:45:43. > :45:52.will on the wide side. No, is this bowl going to stay on?
:45:53. > :45:57.No, it's all the way through. There it goes, it's taken away.
:45:58. > :46:05.This is quite a difficult head for Paul. He knows he is lying the one
:46:06. > :46:16.but doesn't really have an easy shot to add another.
:46:17. > :46:24.Well, it wasn't easy but I think Paul Foster has just scored another
:46:25. > :46:30.shot. A fantastic spot. I think the key thing to say was "normal
:46:31. > :46:36.people." Here we go, great strike. Perfect strike. No messing about and
:46:37. > :46:40.a lot of people would say - what's this all about, you can destroy
:46:41. > :46:47.things after a perfect draw, but all part of the game. Yeah, good strike.
:46:48. > :46:54.The jack is sufficiently far enough away. This will just come down to
:46:55. > :47:00.the last two bowls. Yes, I think it'll be one of the pair. The
:47:01. > :47:04.nearest bowl is about five yards away. The key for Paul, if he can
:47:05. > :47:10.get one within three feet. Nicky has to be going for second shot. Not
:47:11. > :47:15.close enough. He is saying he is not close enough. Well, not bad. He can
:47:16. > :47:19.not afford to make a mistake by going for the shot. He can't go in
:47:20. > :47:22.the ditch with this. So he has to err on the careful side. There are a
:47:23. > :47:44.few shots in this. It is easy to Oh, just. Well that was the right
:47:45. > :47:52.idea. That was a good shot. UMPIRE: One shot, Brett and Johnston.
:47:53. > :47:58.He wasn't sure, was he? There has been a few like that in this
:47:59. > :48:10.tournament. Just occasionally we think there is
:48:11. > :48:32.a little fast run. Yes, on the wide side.
:48:33. > :48:56.And again, come on, right up, right up. Yeah, well done.
:48:57. > :49:25.OK, well done. I think he will be happy with that. Another short one
:49:26. > :49:30.would have been quite disastrous. So just coming two or three feet behind
:49:31. > :49:34.is useful. In the previous end in this direction I think Nicky was
:49:35. > :49:39.blocked out on the forehand side. That's why he played a loose
:49:40. > :49:45.backhand but once again, Rebecca really is playing good leading bowls
:49:46. > :49:49.here. Just a bit out, the line is real good. Just a bit of
:49:50. > :49:54.encouragement from Nicky - your line is real good, just take a bit of
:49:55. > :49:59.weight off. Good skipping. Yes, staying positive. Played some good
:50:00. > :50:08.bowls Claire Johnston, especially in the last two or three ends. Good
:50:09. > :50:15.effort. Took a little bit off but just not enough. Both Paul and Nicky
:50:16. > :50:17.international skips, so you would expect them to be encouraging their
:50:18. > :50:31.players all the time. Is Rebecca front end for England?
:50:32. > :50:38.Yes, front end for England but that will change at some stage. I'm just
:50:39. > :50:46.thinking back to the pairs event, where, you sort of think, with Jason
:50:47. > :50:49.and Les gill the interaction was fantastic with Les saying - you
:50:50. > :50:54.really are hard work at times, down to him at the other end. It was
:50:55. > :50:58.really fantastic. It really S I was chatting to them the other evening
:50:59. > :51:04.and it is just brilliant the way they get onning together Yes, they
:51:05. > :51:11.certainly had a good night last night the pair of them. Imagine
:51:12. > :51:14.saying that to your skip? I think even Leslie's comment after the
:51:15. > :51:23.game, slightly criticising Jason but Jason took it all in good heart.
:51:24. > :51:27.Well, Nicky, three down here? He might be tempted with this. I know
:51:28. > :51:34.he has only one bowl here, but it would clear the road. He is looking
:51:35. > :51:37.for the draw. The last time in this direction it didn't work for them
:51:38. > :51:39.and he lost three. Claire likes this one. Come on, up you come. Needs to
:51:40. > :51:54.hurry. A clear run. I think it was good, I
:51:55. > :51:56.think he would have drawn the shop. Clear run he was there. He will be
:51:57. > :52:10.happy to have that one in. I don't think he has enough weight
:52:11. > :52:12.to turn that. Just another foot or so would have made the gap,
:52:13. > :52:24.probably. If Nicky looking at this, just a
:52:25. > :52:29.forehand draw, hoping to promote his last bowl. I think so, 6-4, you
:52:30. > :52:31.really don't offer the opportunity to pick up doubles and trebles. So
:52:32. > :52:47.just try and keep it nice and tight. Well, sometimes, there is a bit of
:52:48. > :52:56.movement and he he resets himself. He is pretty good at doing that. I'm
:52:57. > :52:59.not out. Which means he is inside the line. Therefore he will dive. He
:53:00. > :53:04.will dive because his weight is good.
:53:05. > :53:10.I tell you a loshgts he will give a will the for another one. The front
:53:11. > :53:17.plant is kicking the edge of the other one. But no more bowls left
:53:18. > :53:22.for him. I don't think there is much on Forestieri Paul. Just the
:53:23. > :53:27.backhand draw. Possibly 6-6 if he makes another one. I don't think he
:53:28. > :53:37.should be looking at anything here. Just a draw from the backhand.
:53:38. > :53:42.There are the trophies. A sturdy box required, I think. Ye, a nice trophy
:53:43. > :53:51.there. I bet your ones at home are full of
:53:52. > :53:56.jelly beans or something. Gathering dust somewhere I'm sure, David.
:53:57. > :54:02.Unlucky, Paul, good weight. UMPIRE: Won shot, Foster and Field.
:54:03. > :54:19.-- one shot. It's ban high-quality match. Some
:54:20. > :54:27.lovely bowling. Good draws, good conversion shots. Two leads having a
:54:28. > :54:31.decent battle. Becs just shading it slightly. Claire's had a couple of
:54:32. > :54:36.really, really good ends and obviously putting bowls in the right
:54:37. > :54:41.positions to allow Nicky Brett to do damage.
:54:42. > :54:48.That's what I say to people all the time when you are playing in rinks,
:54:49. > :54:53.don't get too jack focussed. Hit bowls in the head. As you say, it is
:54:54. > :54:58.not all about getting close to the jack. The practical side vital in
:54:59. > :55:04.the game, most obviously in team events. You've got to know where the
:55:05. > :55:10.bowls are going to go and where the jack ends up. But both - I would
:55:11. > :55:15.agree, both the girls are leading well. Claire's settled into her
:55:16. > :55:23.game. Run all you can now. And again. All you've got.
:55:24. > :55:42.The expressions of the players. She's just rolling her eyes there.
:55:43. > :55:47.Well, she's in the that short, only 18 to 20 inches according to Paul. !
:55:48. > :55:53.This is a good change of hand here from Rebecca. Drawn the shot.
:55:54. > :55:59.APPLAUSE It might be worth changing but she's
:56:00. > :56:03.sticking with it for now on her backhand. Opening bowl was good.
:56:04. > :56:11.Only 20 inches. Just a slight direction. The line's good.
:56:12. > :56:18.She promoted her own bowl, but not enough. Her weight was good. If
:56:19. > :56:20.she'd missed it, it is probably going to cancel it out now, I would
:56:21. > :56:33.think, play the other side. Fine. Turn it over similar thing.
:56:34. > :56:48.Just draw to it, if you get to this, good.
:56:49. > :56:54.She's got a chance with this one. Big chance. Well-played. Very well
:56:55. > :57:22.played. Well, Paul on his favoured side. You
:57:23. > :57:35.would expect him to be close here. A great effort. It's also very handy
:57:36. > :57:40.there and Nick will be aware of that. I think he is and that's why
:57:41. > :57:44.he is change to the forehand side. This will be going deep, probably
:57:45. > :57:49.trying to be a yard past the jack. This game almost deserves to go into
:57:50. > :58:03.the last end w a shoot out. Very good, well done. Well done.
:58:04. > :58:10.This is a more positive line from Paul. Playing this with a little bit
:58:11. > :58:15.of weight. Looks to be slightly under. But where is the jack going,
:58:16. > :58:18.if he touches the green and it is moving, there is a bowl lurking back
:58:19. > :58:27.there. There it is. Not that far away. Just a bowl underneath the
:58:28. > :58:31.line with Paul Foster's last delivery. Nick needs this one in.
:58:32. > :58:51.Come on. Just lay it here. Super bowl. They'll be going into
:58:52. > :58:55.the last end three-down. Obviously Nick's last bowl a perfect front
:58:56. > :59:01.toucher. Paul has come down to look at T he has got a red bowl. There's
:59:02. > :59:05.front plants available. All sorts of things could happen in the drive.
:59:06. > :59:08.We'll see. That's Paul's view. It is a wide head, Andy, I think he will
:59:09. > :59:14.get into this. There is an element of a hit and hope about it. I think
:59:15. > :59:17.so, backhand runner looks good. Any movement to the jack will move to
:59:18. > :59:19.the red bowl. Just needs to hit the target. Needs that front planter.
:59:20. > :59:30.Will he get it right? Well, took one out. That's good. He
:59:31. > :59:35.was in the target area. He had absolutely no idea where the jack
:59:36. > :59:40.was going to go. Not bad. No, he has taken one away. About 15 inches here
:59:41. > :59:45.I would think for Nicky to draw another. So this is a big bowl. He
:59:46. > :59:49.is aware the ball is right on top of the jack, so he can not afford to
:59:50. > :59:51.touch the shot bowl, the jack would move. He has to be very careful with
:59:52. > :00:06.this. See if he can drift in jack high and
:00:07. > :00:24.make a double. He is trying hard now. It'll drop away I think.
:00:25. > :00:29.They're having a measure. Well, he had to be careful, Andy, but at the
:00:30. > :00:34.same time, another one would've been useful. Yes, I'm sure he slightly
:00:35. > :00:42.annoyed at himself. Three up in the last end was good. It is reachable.
:00:43. > :00:51.A double with six bowls in particular. A lot harder when it was
:00:52. > :00:55.only two bowls each. Obviously the counts have come up and there have
:00:56. > :01:07.been two threes in this game already. All the rest have been
:01:08. > :01:18.single. A mid-length ball or a Midland Jack -- mid-length jack for
:01:19. > :01:31.Claire to get to. And again. And again. Two feet. Always looking for
:01:32. > :01:38.good weight with the first bowl, but when you are playing with players of
:01:39. > :01:41.this kind of quality, behind the jack is almost better. You don't
:01:42. > :01:50.want to block the drive to stay out of trouble. Correct. Just needs a
:01:51. > :02:23.couple of feet. The good close second in here. Overcorrected on it.
:02:24. > :02:53.Just needs to get down off the line. Not showing much reaction. Without
:02:54. > :03:16.the touch it was so much better, but it is dropping in.
:03:17. > :03:28.She knew it was too high, but that the is coming around which good.
:03:29. > :03:36.It's Paul's option now. The choice is really here for Paul Foster, but
:03:37. > :03:42.what do you think, Andy? Will he attack it only? He will play with
:03:43. > :03:56.weight, but it could be an awkward weight. He did try to get another
:03:57. > :04:03.bowl ahead. Missed the front one. Now that is actually not too bad. It
:04:04. > :04:13.has opened up the gap on the backhand, but the forehand was
:04:14. > :04:23.dangerous. This is awkward for Paul. I don't think he can get back off of
:04:24. > :04:28.the red bowl, not with weight. This is the type of shot back at your own
:04:29. > :04:32.club you could probably play well, but on this portable, once again we
:04:33. > :04:40.see him going, but he might get a result here. Oh! He just about got
:04:41. > :04:49.the red bowl. He has opened up on the forehand now. Let's see if Nick
:04:50. > :04:54.goes deeper with this. He has and rightly so, Nick. It will be on the
:04:55. > :05:19.forehand now. That is a good bowl. Just needs to come down very
:05:20. > :05:23.quickly. It is a big bending bowl. Oh, my goodness me. His own bowl
:05:24. > :05:33.fell in against the bias. This is going to be close. I think Nicky
:05:34. > :05:37.will be coming in with a forehand, trying to draw the shop bowl. He
:05:38. > :05:41.needs another one in. Probably forehand draw. I would love to know
:05:42. > :06:04.the line. Clear is calling this. I don't think
:06:05. > :06:06.he is going to make it. I'm not sure whether line is, whether it is one
:06:07. > :06:26.or two. It needed the perfect shot and Paul
:06:27. > :06:32.is more than capable of playing it. He is looking at the backhand. My
:06:33. > :06:40.goodness me. I think the reason he is looking at that is because he
:06:41. > :06:51.might need the line as well. We need to know who is lying the shop. --
:06:52. > :07:04.shot. If he is 1-0 down, it is a good shot on the bowl. Not getting
:07:05. > :07:14.anything from the officials, but if he is on the forehand it must be
:07:15. > :07:20.line one. He is not going to get back. Paul will know. He knows his
:07:21. > :07:33.bowls very well, as all be top players do. Nobody is making a
:07:34. > :07:39.decision here. If it is wrong it doesn't matter, it really matter.
:07:40. > :07:54.Happy enough to give the one shop. You know you have won the set. Paul
:07:55. > :08:00.knew he was just slightly on the outside. 7-6, ath the reflection in
:08:01. > :08:07.terms of scoreline, but in terms of the overall match, I think it should
:08:08. > :08:14.have been a draw. Yes. Nicky Brett and clear Johnson will be delighted
:08:15. > :08:25.that they have one set lead. -- Claire Johnston. Nick did play some
:08:26. > :08:31.big ends. Then Claire came in and it was an even competition. Both
:08:32. > :08:38.players started to play well. In the early part of the set Nicky Brett
:08:39. > :08:41.showed his class. That is understandable. Claire was just
:08:42. > :09:21.getting into it and she is well in the groove now.
:09:22. > :09:32.I spoke to David Gourlay this morning and the Scottish squad will
:09:33. > :09:39.be announced soon. That will get things going. Social media will be
:09:40. > :09:46.alive. Who is in, who is not in. I don't think we will go down that
:09:47. > :09:50.path in case we get some letters in. It does not matter who they pick, it
:09:51. > :09:57.is always going to be a conversation piece. No difference whatsoever. The
:09:58. > :10:03.good head of bowls already. Nick is right on it, Claire has a chance to
:10:04. > :10:19.move it with this one. She might be over the weight with this one. That
:10:20. > :10:22.is all right, that is OK. Too anxious to get to the shot, but a
:10:23. > :10:43.good line. A very good bowl from Rebecca. Judy
:10:44. > :10:49.Potter is there. My goodness, look at that. Cream and lemon. It is a
:10:50. > :11:03.new one. Icon remember that one. You know them all. She has got racks of
:11:04. > :11:09.them! Nick is playing this with attacking weight. He is very close.
:11:10. > :11:15.Oh, that has opened it up. It'll give him a chance. A very good bowl.
:11:16. > :11:33.He clears the third bowl which is very heavy now he comes into play.
:11:34. > :11:45.If this drifts across it might help. Looking far too inviting now for
:11:46. > :12:03.Nicky. It depends. He is playing the hard weight, Andy. Urging the ball
:12:04. > :12:19.back. Close to it. Superb weight. Nick of the Red Bull, trails a jack.
:12:20. > :12:29.He was still getting it. -- of the red bowl. He needs to hold it. And
:12:30. > :12:35.it will help. It is going to drop and offer an opportunity. That bowl
:12:36. > :12:38.is almost locked in and the two greens will disappear, so Nick is
:12:39. > :13:27.aware he needs another one in. I am just looking to see what weight
:13:28. > :13:33.it is. This front one is in the way, but if he can get onto that one it
:13:34. > :13:38.is possible the two Greens will disappear. 100%. Not easy to get to
:13:39. > :13:46.the red one, but if he does he'll get a good result. There is red on
:13:47. > :13:53.the outside edge of the mat. Mrs the front ones, he is very close. He is
:13:54. > :14:06.not getting down. -- he misses the front ones. If he had known that
:14:07. > :14:15.from six yards out... Good effort. Nicky Brett again turning their head
:14:16. > :14:21.around. Beautiful arena here at Potters result. We are being very
:14:22. > :14:29.well looked after a pit in the commentary box. We certainly are. We
:14:30. > :14:34.made a comment about jellybeans and two minutes later they appear. And
:14:35. > :14:41.many other suites are available from many other manufacturers. You are
:14:42. > :14:54.being spoilt. Yes, and the coffee appears. It's like being at home.
:14:55. > :14:56.The girls are never at home, they are too busy out enjoying
:14:57. > :15:28.themselves! Write-up now. Run. And again. And
:15:29. > :16:00.again. Good stuff. Well done. That is fine. Good. Any touch that
:16:01. > :16:07.will get past to the last ball is good. There are some advantages to
:16:08. > :16:11.the indoor game, of course. You don't have to worry about the
:16:12. > :16:15.weather conditions, but the standard of play in terms of the distances
:16:16. > :16:26.from the jack is somewhat different as well. Well done. We're good.
:16:27. > :16:40.Another one. Claire hasn't got the shock, but she has got two good ones
:16:41. > :16:43.in there. With indoors, the commentary box is very comfortable.
:16:44. > :16:55.It's a bit different when you're outside at the top of the stand.
:16:56. > :17:01.Good stuff. Excellent stuff. Rain in Glasgow, bugs in India, bogs in
:17:02. > :17:08.Melbourne. You can't win. Yes, it is too comfortable here for you, David!
:17:09. > :17:13.The crew love it as well. They are not hanging from some gantry with 50
:17:14. > :17:19.mile and I were wins and lashing rain and all the rest of it. We are
:17:20. > :17:27.all happy boys and girls. Nick is attacking this. Lots of chances. Bad
:17:28. > :17:33.result. Really horrible result. That is a bit crawl back. It hit the
:17:34. > :17:49.target perfectly. Everything went out, now he is back to the draw.
:17:50. > :17:56.Normally he would go again, but he doesn't have anything close though
:17:57. > :18:03.it's a bit of a problem. Such a confident player on the forehand
:18:04. > :18:11.runner. He has got this perfectly. Oh, not another one? Oh, dear me! To
:18:12. > :18:16.perfect strikes, to bad results. Oh, dear me, that is just awful. Any
:18:17. > :18:24.connection with the jack moving was good for him. Paul Foster will keep
:18:25. > :18:34.his concentration to add another. I expect number two to be going in
:18:35. > :18:37.now. I think Nick will surely play this differently now because if he
:18:38. > :18:47.misses or go through the gap, he will end up losing three. I don't
:18:48. > :18:55.know if I agree with this one. I don't know if I agree with that one,
:18:56. > :19:02.Nicky. This is not an easy three. I understand what he was doing. He had
:19:03. > :19:14.all the position at the back to work with, but missing it will be costly.
:19:15. > :19:17.He is guaranteed to drop three here. Such confidence, Nicky, in playing
:19:18. > :19:27.the running bowl, that is why he played it. Suffering the
:19:28. > :20:08.consequences now, dropping a three. APPLAUSE
:20:09. > :21:25.Good quality there. Played really well. Good correction here from
:21:26. > :21:49.Claire. Well played, very well played. Good job.
:21:50. > :22:00.That was the one to arrive at it. If you miss it, you come through. Yes,
:22:01. > :22:06.because it blocks Paul from playing any. The bowl at the top of the
:22:07. > :22:15.screen, the red one, it blocks any option that he was going to play.
:22:16. > :22:23.Actually, that is OK. It gives another shot and there is still good
:22:24. > :22:28.stuff from both players. I think the three polls has helped actually,
:22:29. > :22:39.particularly in the mixed pairs. It has been very beneficial. We are
:22:40. > :22:53.seeing more heads built up. More shots played, strategies. Maybe
:22:54. > :22:56.people feel with a two bowl game, that's not necessary, but I think
:22:57. > :23:06.there is a case for both. Absolutely. I have a personal
:23:07. > :23:11.preference to have three balls and the opposition to have two. I think
:23:12. > :23:22.I need five or six and the opposition should have won! Need a
:23:23. > :23:31.bit of instruction here from Rebecca. Choices are you are still
:23:32. > :23:39.looking to fall off mine or falling off the back line. She is giving
:23:40. > :23:50.poll a -- she is giving Paul a chance. That is a good shot to look
:23:51. > :24:00.at. A good backhand shot. He's not sure. He doesn't know. Be positive
:24:01. > :24:03.Rebecca. Told him what to play. I think it gets to the stage where you
:24:04. > :24:16.just have to say look, Paul, just play it. She has given him too many
:24:17. > :24:31.options. Very close. Yes, that's good. That's good.
:24:32. > :24:38.The last bowl is just that through. This one here is probably two feet
:24:39. > :24:42.in front. I don't know whether you could play it in there, or there is
:24:43. > :25:15.a draw here. Come on. Come on... He works to get
:25:16. > :25:25.in front of it. A good bowl. Pour indicating he's going to play the
:25:26. > :25:29.backhand draw. It is an open draw. Just can't afford to be too heavy on
:25:30. > :25:37.it because there are a lot of green bowls back there. This is his
:25:38. > :25:48.favourite side, so I wouldn't expect them to be far away here. Very
:25:49. > :25:55.close. Perfect. He has played for the double. Still there. Just
:25:56. > :26:05.touched it and dropped away, but I think it is still there. He has got
:26:06. > :26:11.one. A good bowl, a very good bowl. Straight at that angle when they hit
:26:12. > :26:24.a ball and it stays up. Rebecca said well played, so same type of shot
:26:25. > :26:31.for Nicky. If he could trail this a yards, he could top it. He is well
:26:32. > :27:26.under. The shot tempted him, to play the yard on, but it is so hard.
:27:27. > :27:52.I really hope I've pushed that... No.
:27:53. > :28:03.And again. Keep rolling. All you can. Well done, well done. A really
:28:04. > :28:08.good battle. After the first three or four ends, Claire has really
:28:09. > :28:13.settled in. I agree. It has been a good game. They've provided some
:28:14. > :28:18.very good balls. It is changing quite a bit. It's not a case of
:28:19. > :28:24.draw, draw, draw. Maybe I'm coming round to it. It just makes it
:28:25. > :28:28.exciting. I think that is the nature of the game when it comes to shot
:28:29. > :28:32.play and they are moving the game along quickly. That is the worry,
:28:33. > :28:36.that the change wouldn't work, but it has. Play your two bowls and that
:28:37. > :28:56.is almost it, isn't it? I think that was a lot like the shot
:28:57. > :29:00.put. I didn't like it when it came out, but of got used to it. Maybe
:29:01. > :29:10.players will get used to a three bowl game. Great strike. Onto the
:29:11. > :29:30.response position, bowls following through. -- respot.
:29:31. > :29:39.You adapt to the different styles and you make it work for you. Change
:29:40. > :29:53.things into a situation that favours your play. The changes for the
:29:54. > :30:04.better hopefully. He's the up and down and he is a fit guy, believe
:30:05. > :30:07.me. He has made it up to the end. The two skippers have to walk
:30:08. > :30:11.together. The walls are very clear about that. All part of keeping the
:30:12. > :30:13.game moving and the match continuing. That is just going to
:30:14. > :30:29.drop under. Two of the fastest players on the
:30:30. > :30:34.circuit up there, Paul Foster and Nick bre. That was a bit risky. But
:30:35. > :30:39.he has played it well. Very well. Right up to the edge.
:30:40. > :30:43.APPLAUSE I don't think Nick uses any
:30:44. > :30:45.time-outs when he is playing his singles game. He just gets on with
:30:46. > :30:55.it. It's so rare. A better try from Paul this time.
:30:56. > :31:01.Will he hold up? Will he get the gap? The important bit? Oh, my
:31:02. > :31:09.goodness me, Andy. On another day, that just makes the gap. Good bowl.
:31:10. > :31:13.Got the edge. This is different, going for the bowl.
:31:14. > :31:20.Oh, Claire, can we see? On the high side. Unlucky. He thought that was
:31:21. > :31:24.there. He honestly thought that was there. A shake of the head. He
:31:25. > :31:31.reckoned he'd made that. Just held off.
:31:32. > :31:39.Well, Paul lying 1. Needs another bowl in. He knows Nicky will run at
:31:40. > :31:51.this again. I expect Paul could draw here another. -- another here.
:31:52. > :32:00.Where he finishes is the question? Oh, he has let Nicky in here, this
:32:01. > :32:04.is a chance. He has indeed. Same bowl from Nicky, try to run the
:32:05. > :32:09.other one out and score two or three. Jack's good, too. A hard shot
:32:10. > :32:17.being on the respot but he'll be close. He's got this all the way.
:32:18. > :32:25.A brilliant bowl. Takes it out. Makes the double. Well, played Nicky
:32:26. > :32:32.breath but Paul will be mad at himself. UMPIRE: Two shots, Brett
:32:33. > :32:37.and Johnston. A chance for him to get second bowl in. 4-3 up on this
:32:38. > :32:54.set. A big turn around. A massive turn
:32:55. > :32:59.around. Yes, it was. If Paul scored a one or a two there, they were
:33:00. > :33:17.favourites. But a big two from Nicky keeps it tight.
:33:18. > :33:22.Right back, right back. Yeah, decent, well-played, well-played.
:33:23. > :33:48.APPLAUSE The jack's been moved around a fair
:33:49. > :33:53.bit at different lengths. The leads are doing well to keep a track of
:33:54. > :33:57.it. It is not easy, they can't get into a rhythm. You sort of think if
:33:58. > :34:01.they get six or eight lengths at similar length, they can get into a
:34:02. > :34:05.rhythm. But they are having to make adjustments. Run. Well-played. Very
:34:06. > :34:10.good. APPLAUSE. We saw in the men's final
:34:11. > :34:17.yesterday, it was generally long all the time. I think I heard some
:34:18. > :34:23.comment yesterday, in the full day's play, there was only two jack
:34:24. > :34:28.lengths under 25m. 25 and 23. It just shows you that long has been
:34:29. > :34:39.the favourite length. And again, even if you hit the odd green one or
:34:40. > :34:42.to the red, as well. Yes, we have gurus buried away out the back
:34:43. > :34:51.telling us these things, Andy, experts. That will keep. I should
:34:52. > :34:57.have left you, sorry. Or as one of my friends back home calls them,
:34:58. > :35:01.gurieres. Rebecca's opening two bowls, a yard through. Needs to
:35:02. > :35:09.adjust slightly. This looks to be under. Well, if she's got extra
:35:10. > :35:14.weight on t it'll hold. Unlucky. Just dropping now
:35:15. > :35:19.It's fair to say Rebecca has had a good game. This not her best end but
:35:20. > :35:41.she's not had many like that. So Nick hoping to drop the wing bowl
:35:42. > :35:45.out of the way if he can. A little bit of a shoulder for Paul Foster to
:35:46. > :35:51.use, and he wants to move it. Does he get it right? Well, he has used
:35:52. > :35:53.it himself. It'll be interesting to see what Paul does, whether he draws
:35:54. > :36:09.it or plays through it. Come on, back now, back now, jack,
:36:10. > :36:25.jack. OK. It's close, I would maybe say this
:36:26. > :36:49.is the shot. Keep running, right up. A very good
:36:50. > :36:54.bowl by Nick Brett to recover the situation. And we welcome back our
:36:55. > :37:00.viewers in Wales. In the meantime what you've missed or maybe had the
:37:01. > :37:05.chance to see, the first set very close, 6-6 all the way through --
:37:06. > :37:09.7-6 all the way through to the last shot. It was exciting stuff and the
:37:10. > :37:13.second set, 4-3 after four ends. Once again, excellent bowling, a lot
:37:14. > :37:19.of shot play. A lot of head scratching from the skips.
:37:20. > :37:27.It is difficult here for Rebecca, asking Paul really what to play.
:37:28. > :37:31.Quite simply Paul would like to have a look at this one but Rebecca,
:37:32. > :37:35.you're going to have to be quite strong. That looks to me forehand
:37:36. > :37:42.shot. I think if you played aer if hand, reached through the head. Bowl
:37:43. > :37:45.or jack. Yes. Looks good. He has his own on the way in.
:37:46. > :37:51.I think that's what he is playing. Good call, Rebecca. He is in the
:37:52. > :37:55.area. Very much in the area for the jack.
:37:56. > :38:04.Lovely weight. Beautiful weight he played that. It is a hard shot to
:38:05. > :38:10.play, Andy. Across the head as well. He played it to perfection. He has
:38:11. > :38:14.made one or two out of that. Here we see the final delivery. Bowl out,
:38:15. > :38:32.jack movement, good. But he is happy with that. That is one or two.
:38:33. > :38:41.Looking at this, I think it is a backhand draw. If it is two shots, I
:38:42. > :38:44.think it probably is. The back position is all against him. So, the
:38:45. > :38:50.difficulty he is probably thinking about is - if I draw the shot,
:38:51. > :38:54.Paul's got one left to run it and lose a three or a four. I don't
:38:55. > :38:59.think he's got any choice, though. To me it is just a backhand draw,
:39:00. > :39:02.hoping that the ball finishes in a good position. I don't think there
:39:03. > :39:06.is an attacking shot on here, really. We are showing one red at
:39:07. > :39:13.the moment but we have a feeling that it might be two. It makes a
:39:14. > :39:16.difference. Just played the backhand draw.
:39:17. > :39:32.Just going to drift, is it? I think it will, I think it'll fall away.
:39:33. > :39:38.Well, this has to be tempting here for Paul. I think Paul will be
:39:39. > :39:43.trying to draw another, really. Lying the one. If he does trail the
:39:44. > :39:49.jack, gets the bonus but I think it is really just a draw. Yes, last
:39:50. > :40:10.end, needing three, the shot would be obvious. But this is a close set.
:40:11. > :40:40.Always on the high side. Safe side. UMPIRE: One shot, Foster and Field.
:40:41. > :40:48.Quality match. Good stuff all round. That's a good picture that isn't it?
:40:49. > :40:54.Very, very good and it gives us an independencation of the size of the
:40:55. > :41:01.international arena here. Good stuff. A full size green underneath
:41:02. > :42:00.the portable rink. You will the way back now. Very
:42:01. > :42:05.good, Becs. -- all the way back.
:42:06. > :42:14.She didn't like that. She didn't right away. She knew it wasn't good.
:42:15. > :42:18.Not quite. She knew out of the hand that it wasn't right. OK, Claire,
:42:19. > :42:23.ignore that one. Ye, as long as you know. It is when you let them go and
:42:24. > :42:29.you think you are close and you are five feet away. Yes that's a big
:42:30. > :42:30.problem. Everybody playses a loose delivery. Forget about it Claire,
:42:31. > :43:00.get on with the next one. Right down now. Right down.
:43:01. > :43:09.Well-played. It's good. Good correction. Great recovery ball. It
:43:10. > :43:14.is a very strange thing, isn't it, Andy, you are talking to an
:43:15. > :43:19.inanimate object. Chatting away to the ball, bend, run, stay up. As if
:43:20. > :43:24.it is going to listen. But we all get involved. It never will listen.
:43:25. > :43:34.But it is all part of the game, isn't it? That encouragement.
:43:35. > :43:43.Paul Foster is having a look here. A great ball. A perfect ball. Toucher.
:43:44. > :43:51.I think when you are calling the ball, it is as much for the players,
:43:52. > :43:56.just play it. We are used to play international bowlses. And there's
:43:57. > :44:03.plenty of people there just shouting and noise. We'll look forward to
:44:04. > :44:08.that in Belfast. We'll welcome you. A kind rub there for Nicky. I can't
:44:09. > :44:13.believe that one. A bit of a tease there from Nick. Yes you will be at
:44:14. > :44:19.Belfast for two greens, but we'll just use one of them. A big club.
:44:20. > :44:24.One of the greens blue? Both are. It is a big, big club,
:44:25. > :44:31.Andy. Yes, I have been there a few times. Looking forward to it. And of
:44:32. > :44:37.course you can have a quiet sherbert at the end and walk back to the
:44:38. > :44:42.hotel. Yes, perfect situation. Yes, looking forward to it. The Mm, Nick,
:44:43. > :44:46.well, you want to be through this at least. If he gets past the short
:44:47. > :44:52.one. Yes, there it is, now he is past that. Well, that's a little bit
:44:53. > :44:56.different. Yes, gives him options I think with his final delivery.
:44:57. > :45:01.Certainly does. Paul not thinking too hard about this. I think he's
:45:02. > :45:05.just trying to draw the shot bowl. Yes, looking to drop on the green
:45:06. > :45:13.bowl or turn on the jack. That will make a big difference to the set.
:45:14. > :45:17.Hurry. Oh, just dropped under. I thinks' got to play this, Andy.
:45:18. > :45:21.Looks like a reasonable running bowl on the backhand side. I think it is
:45:22. > :45:26.there for him if he wants to play it. Paul's last bowl actually helps
:45:27. > :45:30.on the plant as well if he goes narrow. The trouble ator if hand is
:45:31. > :45:34.if he comes off the green bowl and draws back he'll probably give
:45:35. > :45:38.another shot away. It looks like an attacking backhand shot. I think
:45:39. > :45:45.that's what he is playing. And he is looking at this. I think he is very
:45:46. > :45:48.close. Now, ye, indeed. The red bowl stopped and he is picking up a
:45:49. > :46:04.double here. Perfect strike. Good strike. -- yes indeed.
:46:05. > :46:16.That brings them back level. UMPIRE: 5-5 after six ends.
:46:17. > :46:24.Well some interesting people up there, David Gower lay in the middle
:46:25. > :46:27.and Neil Ferman from the USA. Opposition tomorrow morning, aren't
:46:28. > :46:34.they? I think they're playing each other. Oh, there you go. Choke him
:46:35. > :46:44.now, David, och, he doesn't deserve that, Neil's a nice guy. He learned
:46:45. > :46:49.his bowls in South Africa before moving to... I think he lives in
:46:50. > :46:54.California. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. None. David Gower
:46:55. > :47:02.lay lives just south of Barcelona. It just gets worse. They are making
:47:03. > :47:09.us so jealous. -- David Gourlay. The business end of the set now,
:47:10. > :47:16.three ends to go. Paul needs to score to get us into a tie-break.
:47:17. > :47:23.Probably deserves a tie-break I would think, David. It's that sort
:47:24. > :47:31.of game. Yes, a bit like yesterday. It's a very, very good game.
:47:32. > :47:38.Highly entertaining for everyone. A bit of something to keep all our
:47:39. > :47:43.viewers and speculators happy. I think the bowl has been very good.
:47:44. > :47:44.Greg's game this morning and the two pairs games. Quality bowling,
:47:45. > :47:54.really. Absolutely. It gives me the impression of the
:47:55. > :48:20.rink of allowing that as well. Excellent.
:48:21. > :48:29.Just needs to bend. Just on the high side.
:48:30. > :48:39.About an inch-and-a-half off. Inch-and-a-half. That means you can
:48:40. > :48:43.play away at that without too much damage being done if she touches her
:48:44. > :48:45.own bowl. If the jack had been against the bowl she could have'
:48:46. > :48:53.moved it away. Looking pretty good again.
:48:54. > :49:04.Well, that might tempt him playing something. I think don't think Nick
:49:05. > :49:09.would have happy with that, it has probably dropped the backhand draw
:49:10. > :49:13.out. Well, he needs a close ball at 5-5. He has to think about getting
:49:14. > :49:16.something in there, before he plays an attacking shot. Yes, 3-down, he
:49:17. > :49:29.will be happy with second bowl here. He was in the area. Oh, he has found
:49:30. > :49:34.the gap. That's unlucky. Yes and he is on the seam which held him up. It
:49:35. > :49:50.didn't allow him to drawback. That's a big difference missing that bowl.
:49:51. > :49:59.That looks like number four coming N Perfect. The perfect spot. Got to be
:50:00. > :50:04.tempting but it is a big, big head. It is tempting, too tempting. Going
:50:05. > :50:11.for it. Needs to get down to the jack, though. That edge was massive.
:50:12. > :50:16.That was a massive edge to get. He was finding the gap there without
:50:17. > :50:20.the edge. I think he might have even, well, just taken one away,
:50:21. > :50:27.four down. But that was a big, big result. UMPIRE: One green measure. I
:50:28. > :50:33.think Paul would've expected it to happen. It was a probably target.
:50:34. > :50:39.Paul has two bowls to Nick one. Still advantage Paul and Rebecca to
:50:40. > :50:45.score on this end. Good now. It started to bend away from this side.
:50:46. > :51:04.That's the one. Oh, I think I've left it on me toe.
:51:05. > :51:08.That means it isn't up. Which means Paul is in with a chance of drawing
:51:09. > :51:12.another but Nick knew that out of the hands. He played a great ball
:51:13. > :51:22.with the second delivery. He didn't get that away good but a big, big
:51:23. > :51:26.chance for Paul Foster to score two. And then that will be 7 with two
:51:27. > :51:33.ends to go. A nice little break to get. Good height.
:51:34. > :51:41.Number two coming in. You never think something is a foregone
:51:42. > :51:44.conclusion but you can see that coming in. UMPIRE: Two shots, Foster
:51:45. > :52:51.and Field. Well done, Becs. Very impressive,
:52:52. > :52:56.David. She really has. She played the backhand. Her hand, I felt has
:52:57. > :53:02.been tricky but she played it well, Rebecca. Sometimes it is down to the
:53:03. > :53:08.size of the bowl. Right down now, Claire, well done, very good. That
:53:09. > :53:14.was a good replay. Very good. Both these players are using strong
:53:15. > :53:26.biassed bowls as well. Again, both leading on different hands.
:53:27. > :53:42.It's good, Becs, keeping turning. Yes, shot.
:53:43. > :53:50.Well, Claire, can you repeat the same delivery? She's close, too.
:53:51. > :54:01.Come on, all you've got, all you've got. Good bowl, well done. Good
:54:02. > :54:10.effort. I I know it is not easy. If you can touch t it is great, if you
:54:11. > :54:14.come by, it is good. He is telling her to change hands. Good
:54:15. > :54:18.instructions. Making sure she is arriving at the head with two feet
:54:19. > :54:24.of running. Now, wider with any pace you are good. Paul was happy. I
:54:25. > :54:30.think there is no skip in the world will be unhappy with that. No, good
:54:31. > :54:36.leading from Rebecca and a good opposition bowl. Paul two-up, so in
:54:37. > :54:41.a good position, he knows if he scores he'll probably win it so Niki
:54:42. > :54:45.needs to score here. Claire has enough to carry this all the way to
:54:46. > :54:55.the jack. Or slide off the red? Hurry, hurry. Well-played. Oh, it is
:54:56. > :55:00.going to draw. A great bowling. At the At the other side it was perfect
:55:01. > :55:01.for the double. It is the bowl falling back, that's the problem.
:55:02. > :55:17.Good stuff. Unlucky, Claire. Paul will just try to hide this jack
:55:18. > :55:22.away. It is still an inviting target for Nicky. So trying to take the
:55:23. > :55:30.shot away from Niki. -- Nicky. Lacking. He is but where is it going
:55:31. > :55:34.to go? Well, Nick has a choice here. If he gets the grown bowl on to the
:55:35. > :55:43.red, that's probably the perfect result. Will he bend?
:55:44. > :55:49.The bowl is going to stay on the green so that gives him more options
:55:50. > :55:55.later. Paul should still be thinking of pulling the jack through. That's
:55:56. > :55:57.what he tried to play with the previous delivery, it dropped shot.
:55:58. > :56:02.If he gets it right it'll take Nick's shot away. Missed the line
:56:03. > :56:08.again. Under again. He slapped his thigh there. He knows he is giving
:56:09. > :56:13.Niki chances here. Sorry. It's all right. There we see the deepest
:56:14. > :56:20.bowl. That might come into play shortly. Nick doesn't waste any
:56:21. > :56:29.time. Bowl. Bowl. Well done. Always looked good for that.
:56:30. > :56:36.Jack through was worth the double as well. Catches it perfectly. And
:56:37. > :56:40.takes two. Paul Foster has to be very careful here. He can't remove
:56:41. > :56:44.his own bowl. I think Paul will just be trying to draw this. The whole
:56:45. > :56:48.position of the head has been changed. He can't afford to run his
:56:49. > :56:55.own bowl out. Two-down, not a disaster.
:56:56. > :57:05.Is he high enough? He is calling it as being away. He would know better
:57:06. > :57:09.than anyone. He is absolutely right. So, this'll be an interesting one
:57:10. > :57:15.for Nick Brett. Will he really risk this? Or will he take the two? If he
:57:16. > :57:20.gets a three, he can afford to lose a single on the last end. Well, you
:57:21. > :57:27.see by scoring a two it makes no difference. I think I would be a
:57:28. > :57:33.devil, try to plant the bowl out. If he scores a three, a big advantage.
:57:34. > :57:41.Massive. Two makes no difference. Paul Foster will have the last bowl.
:57:42. > :57:46.Yes. I think I would gamble here. He also has the deepest bowl. You are a
:57:47. > :57:50.gambling man, I've never heard so much gambling talk from you, except
:57:51. > :57:57.up here. I'm good with other people's money. Go on, Niki, gamble.
:57:58. > :58:01.Even in the ditch is two. I think I would be positive. Trying to draw.
:58:02. > :58:03.It is a dangerous thing to do, any touch on the jack he'll lose the set
:58:04. > :58:12.effectively. Gets half jack he is all right but
:58:13. > :58:21.he's got the wrong side of it. Well, I think he's got away with that. He
:58:22. > :58:25.has and only just. On the high side it was worth four.
:58:26. > :58:29.Oh, a wee blow of the cheeks I would think for that one.
:58:30. > :58:37.It is a great match. It really is. ! Both the pairs have given us drama
:58:38. > :59:01.haven't they? Right up to the end. In the open pairs we had a 7-7
:59:02. > :59:05.scoreline in the first set. And a 7 of 6 going into the last end in the
:59:06. > :59:11.second set. Yes, very similar, similar gauges really. Absolutely.
:59:12. > :59:16.7-6 in this first set for the Johnson breath pairing and now a
:59:17. > :59:20.quun-end shoot out. -- a one-end shoot out. Hang around and grab with
:59:21. > :00:10.both hands. Not bad. A toucher. Run all you can now, and again, and
:00:11. > :00:15.again. Looking for best back. If he is calling that one through? Yes.
:00:16. > :00:17.Well, I would say nobody is basically lying, you would have to
:00:18. > :00:27.say, at the moment. That's the thing about the indoor
:00:28. > :00:29.game, it's very hard to score shots when you are any more than a few
:00:30. > :00:54.inches away. Well, that's the shot. Well, she is on a better line this
:00:55. > :00:58.time. Will she hold up? She will just dive away, I think. It is a
:00:59. > :01:28.good effort. It is in the area. She is close with this. Asking
:01:29. > :01:33.people to settle. I think she will just try to turn the jack if she
:01:34. > :01:40.can. Don't think she could do much more than she has done. Claire has
:01:41. > :01:45.got good position balls. He will draw with the first ball and he will
:01:46. > :01:57.be tempted with the second too. Just a draw here.
:01:58. > :02:10.Close. Has he got the gap? He has. That is a very good bowler. Just
:02:11. > :02:20.unlucky. The jack in particular would have been absolutely perfect
:02:21. > :02:25.with that weird. Changing to his favoured backhand side. How close
:02:26. > :02:31.can you get bowl? Very close, the answer is. That is very good. That
:02:32. > :02:38.one is coming across on his forehand. That is a very good ball.
:02:39. > :02:42.That is not a lot of room. Even if you drop, it will still be against
:02:43. > :02:58.you. He is going with weight. He favours
:02:59. > :03:04.beforehand. I'm not sure if he will get a great result here. Jack, no.
:03:05. > :03:13.But he has opened it up. That is what he was looking for. I think
:03:14. > :03:22.bowl needs another bowl in here because I think Nicky will be
:03:23. > :03:32.running at this again. One foot in the tie-break. The crowd love a
:03:33. > :03:39.tie-break. They do, they certainly do. It is the players on the Green
:03:40. > :03:48.who don't enjoy them. Will he then took to the centre? Is that third
:03:49. > :03:54.shot? If it is not third shot, Nick Wilco again. It is. That is a big
:03:55. > :04:00.difference. Taking the two bowls and would not be an advantage. He needs
:04:01. > :04:04.the jack. He has a choice. He played a great first ball. I am thinking he
:04:05. > :04:15.might play this just slightly over the weight. Hard to pick the
:04:16. > :04:18.line-out. Playing the same role he played with his first. Just has to
:04:19. > :04:27.give it a chance. Cannot afford to be short. He looks under. Definitely
:04:28. > :04:41.under. He needs help of the red. It is tie-break time.
:04:42. > :04:50.Applause from the audience, rightly so. Once again, we are treated to a
:04:51. > :05:01.great game. We won the toss, bowl, give it away. Bowl Foster will want
:05:02. > :05:08.the last bowl. Yes, everybody once the last bowl. There hasn't been a
:05:09. > :05:13.dramatic difference in life is here, so there is no tactical advantage.
:05:14. > :05:25.Both pairs are happy with the medium length jack. A bit of drama to come
:05:26. > :05:37.yet, I think. If you bounces of the jack.
:05:38. > :05:50.That one is not going to hold the line. That is all right. That is OK.
:05:51. > :05:54.Tie-break rules are different, of course. Just scored the shot,
:05:55. > :05:56.doesn't matter about how many you score, just when the end. There are
:05:57. > :06:33.?3. -- three ends. Harry, Harry. Some nervous stuff out
:06:34. > :06:36.there now. The short ball is not the place to be, because Nick has such a
:06:37. > :07:00.good ball. Rebecca looks like she is under.
:07:01. > :07:07.Just under as well. I wouldn't play that game. -- that I gain. There is
:07:08. > :07:24.enough room to draft. I don't think she will hold that
:07:25. > :07:34.line. It is her forehand. She is still under. That will not be
:07:35. > :07:38.shocked at the end. The shock is not currently on the green. Both the
:07:39. > :07:52.chaps will beat that. How close can Rebecca get? She will probably get
:07:53. > :07:58.the shot. It is not bad. I don't think any of the balls on the green
:07:59. > :08:02.here will be counting. It is almost like a 3-goal single between bowl
:08:03. > :08:24.and Nicky. A lot of debris in the way.
:08:25. > :08:52.Good line from bowl. All about pace now. It is a swinging ball. That is
:08:53. > :08:54.good. That is very good. We talked earlier about Claire APPLAUSE
:08:55. > :09:10.Short ball. That is blocking beforehand. That is
:09:11. > :09:15.stopping the forehand runner. It's oh dear. Look where he is finishing.
:09:16. > :09:27.The green bowl has come to the reshot. It is a distance away. Still
:09:28. > :09:41.nothing close. It is still two against one. It is still in bowl's
:09:42. > :09:48.advantage. -- bowl's advantage. How close can you get? Pretty close, by
:09:49. > :10:04.the look of it. He wants to stay just in front of it. It is good.
:10:05. > :10:17.Nick would be better come up and having a look at the angles on this.
:10:18. > :10:23.Try to draw the shot. A tough one. Will he bend, I don't think he will?
:10:24. > :10:27.He is over at the weight, he is not going to get it. He was making sure
:10:28. > :10:47.he was there. Advantage to foster and Field. They
:10:48. > :11:37.take the opening end. The game is now pushed well into its
:11:38. > :11:41.second hour. I had a feeling that was probably going to be the case.
:11:42. > :11:48.It has been close to a two and a half hour game. It has been good.
:11:49. > :11:50.Interesting all the way through. The time has been flying through. I have
:11:51. > :12:09.enjoyed this one. I think Claire was making sure she
:12:10. > :12:41.was behind that. Yes, yes, rightly so. Just wrong. Still a reasonable
:12:42. > :12:47.target. Two good balls. I think Claire is being positive with this
:12:48. > :12:54.line. Very. Just need to drop down. The extra weight might hold off.
:12:55. > :12:59.Good effort. The wait was very good. I thought it was about a yard
:13:00. > :13:06.heavier than that. I thought she was more aggressive, but not far away.
:13:07. > :13:15.Rebecca will be looking to try to see this end, took the jack away.
:13:16. > :13:33.Bowl Foster looks interested. Well played. That will create all sorts
:13:34. > :13:43.of havoc. Nicky resisting the temptation to go at this. These
:13:44. > :13:48.shots are difficult when you have been used to playing draw shot all
:13:49. > :13:52.along. Trying to provide a shoulder. Still heavy. There it goes. Nick
:13:53. > :14:05.will be forced into playing something very, very special here.
:14:06. > :14:10.Bowl Foster speaking to Rebecca, just trying to find out where the
:14:11. > :14:22.jack Wilco. They are losing the spot on the jack, so it is a fair call.
:14:23. > :14:26.It is a hard shot to beat. You can really improve on the hit. If you
:14:27. > :14:41.can't improve the hit you have to go for position.
:14:42. > :14:51.He will be going for the spot on the other side. That is one covered.
:14:52. > :14:59.Nick really well do well to get this out with the first ball. He has no
:15:00. > :15:03.choice. It is the HRT has available. The problem is he will have to
:15:04. > :15:15.invest another one to get out of. Both the spots will be covered. This
:15:16. > :15:27.is looking difficult for Nick Brett. Certainly wide enough to gain. That
:15:28. > :15:32.is the two spots covered and the combination of Field and Foster have
:15:33. > :15:40.one hand on the trophy. Nick must do something here, you feel. Close.
:15:41. > :15:44.Great strike. Brilliant strike. That is a hard shot, a very hard shot.
:15:45. > :15:52.I'm not sure if the crowd realised how difficult that was. Not much
:15:53. > :16:02.applause. It was a brilliant ball. There is space, he will try to get a
:16:03. > :16:08.lot closer with this one. Foster is about 18 or 19 inches short. Nicky
:16:09. > :16:13.has given them a chance here. It depends on how close Foster can get.
:16:14. > :16:20.He has already played one ball there, so he knows exactly what to
:16:21. > :16:29.do. The problem for Nicky is that he has to have, where are you going? He
:16:30. > :16:34.asked to have room to get to it. How close is this one going to get? He
:16:35. > :16:42.is closer, let's put it that way. He is definitely closer. Six inches.
:16:43. > :16:50.Just a backhand drop for Nicky now. Not easy with the game against you.
:16:51. > :16:54.The game against you, for inches, he could draw two balls, but there is
:16:55. > :16:59.too much of a gap between them. It is not worth it. It will be hard to
:17:00. > :17:05.get back after two running balls. A backhand draw. One hand on the
:17:06. > :17:15.trophy and the other ready to grab it. He is on a good line. You know
:17:16. > :17:31.what, he is very closely. He is very close. They shot to save the match.
:17:32. > :17:41.Well done bowl Foster. I heard him say. Brilliant stuff. Brilliant.
:17:42. > :17:50.That is what we like to see. A good shot from Foster. Absolutely. Both
:17:51. > :18:00.players have been here before. They know what it is like. The opposition
:18:01. > :18:05.plays an absolute bomb on it. What a beautiful bowl that was. Just
:18:06. > :18:13.brilliant, just brilliant. For inches. I tell you what, if there
:18:14. > :18:26.were nerves out there before, there will be even more now.
:18:27. > :18:37.That is tight, Claire. Push it out. That is one thing you cannot afford
:18:38. > :18:42.to do. A bit like the first end. Just calm yourself down a bit,
:18:43. > :19:01.Claire. It is hard. I know it is difficult.
:19:02. > :19:10.That was brilliant from Nick Brett had that and draw within for inches.
:19:11. > :19:18.To get out of that was fantastic. World-class, absolutely world-class.
:19:19. > :19:35.Now, Claire, and your body and led the ball flew out onto the line. --
:19:36. > :19:44.angle your body. She will know. Nick says one in the middle next time.
:19:45. > :19:50.The line was pretty good. I think that reaction says there is
:19:51. > :19:55.something not right about this. None of these balls are going to count at
:19:56. > :20:10.the moment. Both the chaps would like something within six inches.
:20:11. > :20:18.Nicky says Bibi Wright weight. I bet he is hoping it is. I bet he is
:20:19. > :20:27.hoping it is. -- be the right weight. There would be a big smile
:20:28. > :20:32.on Claire Johnston's face is that stays there. What was I doing with
:20:33. > :20:37.the first two? I am not sure if she is enjoying this or not. It is
:20:38. > :20:51.testing, no doubt. I know that we are. It is great.
:20:52. > :21:25.Rebecca drops short. Possibly blocked Foster's favoured hand.
:21:26. > :21:34.Let that won't do a little bit. It has given Foster room. The big
:21:35. > :21:39.shoulder was always going to be running through. Foster, sticking to
:21:40. > :21:46.the backhand, needs another one in. It just looks to be slightly blocked
:21:47. > :21:52.out. He has so much confidence in his own ability to come around
:21:53. > :21:56.things. He is very close. Passes the short one. That probably needed
:21:57. > :22:02.another food or so. He is blocked and now, he cannot play the
:22:03. > :22:09.backhand. Again, you almost feel the shot is not yet on the green. Nicky
:22:10. > :22:18.needs a good one. He has let it go again. He knew that was out of the
:22:19. > :22:23.hand and it was absolutely right. He has let it go again. Chance after
:22:24. > :22:39.chance here. It has to be forehand draw for Foster. And the reaction?
:22:40. > :22:45.He is usually pretty good. Rebecca is looking at this. It has a big
:22:46. > :22:53.brood on the ball, but won't make it. This will go down to the last
:22:54. > :23:00.bowl on the last end of a word mixed pairs final. I am glad they are on
:23:01. > :23:05.the green and not me. You'd love it. There is nothing better than the
:23:06. > :23:10.pressure to get the last bowl. No change in the shot. Still trying to
:23:11. > :23:14.draw because shot. There are three or four players in the world you
:23:15. > :23:26.would like to be out there and two of them are on the green. Have you
:23:27. > :23:34.corrected, Nicky? Still looks high. He is going to frame it. He is going
:23:35. > :23:40.to frame it. It is two shots, but he has friended. The back position
:23:41. > :23:45.favours the green. I think Foster might nominate to destroy this end.
:23:46. > :23:49.This is the only time you can destroy it and have it replayed. He
:23:50. > :23:57.has two nominated. There is a chance for the two balls at that angle. I
:23:58. > :24:01.agree, this is awkward. The other option is to play a heavy shot until
:24:02. > :24:09.he kicks up the jack and attaches to one of the red ones. He has
:24:10. > :24:18.nominated to kill. I agree. He has to play at. There are all sorts of
:24:19. > :24:22.chances there. He has to be, from the outside green one, that is the
:24:23. > :24:30.absolute limit he can go wide. He has gone for a jack, trying to put
:24:31. > :24:39.the jack out of the ring. The reason being, he is two shots down. We
:24:40. > :24:43.could go through this all again. Nick's bowl Freeman has decided what
:24:44. > :25:01.he would do. This one will come down fast. -- framing it. Brilliant,
:25:02. > :25:06.absolutely brilliant. What a strike. We are going to play this again.
:25:07. > :25:12.That is as heavy as it gets. You have to keep the bones back and stop
:25:13. > :25:17.that is the rude, that you take the bones back. Absolutely fantastic
:25:18. > :25:23.strike. No messing about. Full concentration. Just got the half
:25:24. > :25:30.edge on the inside. Didn't really wanted food, to be fair. Food would
:25:31. > :25:39.have been in the ditch. Could not have played that only better. So, on
:25:40. > :25:47.the first replay and of the third end in the tie-break. That is all
:25:48. > :25:56.they are allowed to do. They are only allowed to kill it once as a
:25:57. > :26:01.team. I think both players will be thinking, we have got to go through
:26:02. > :26:08.this again. Nick Brett cannot nominated to destroy the end. So, we
:26:09. > :26:19.could end up playing at another time. Yes, we could. One of the ruse
:26:20. > :26:23.is the Leeds cannot kill the end. I really cannot understand that, to be
:26:24. > :26:30.truthful. I did have a look at it is true. It is in the rooms, a could
:26:31. > :26:40.read it. It is a new one to everyone, I think. Says clearly in
:26:41. > :26:44.the 3rd of March director, each skip will be entitled to kill the end
:26:45. > :26:53.once. They must clearly declare the nomination. I think that is a new
:26:54. > :26:59.one for all the players. However, that is not where you want to be.
:27:00. > :27:09.You want to give Nicky the option to drive at it. Need to be in with the
:27:10. > :27:16.next one. Claire and Nicky had one hand on the trophy in the last end.
:27:17. > :27:24.They certainly did. You don't see Foster going with that much weight
:27:25. > :27:34.that often. Nicky pushing the boat out.
:27:35. > :27:49.There is only one bowl to go, Claire, don't worry.
:27:50. > :27:55.You have to love the excitement of the game, don't you? Anyone who
:27:56. > :28:00.thinks bowls is boring should have a look at this. The games have been
:28:01. > :28:10.good this year. They have been superb. Some very good single
:28:11. > :28:19.schemes, some very good team games. This is slightly different. Not
:28:20. > :28:28.hearing much from Nick. Foster has already uploaded the ball. Just look
:28:29. > :28:36.slightly different on the way down. That is a very good bowler. He said
:28:37. > :28:42.you could still draft. Should the gap between the ball and the jack.
:28:43. > :28:54.Three or four inches. It is very much there. It is available to be
:28:55. > :28:59.played off the shoulder. It depends on the weight. I don't think she is
:29:00. > :29:08.that far away. Just holding slightly. I didn't think she was
:29:09. > :29:19.that far away. Blocked the path for the drop. And he knows that. It was
:29:20. > :29:28.a very good effort. Not far away, Rebecca. You can tell she is going
:29:29. > :29:37.mad, just looking at. She is thinking, please read this over.
:29:38. > :29:42.Certainly advantage to Nicky and Claire at the moment. The line is
:29:43. > :29:51.clear and a good shot. Just a bit over the weight. Foster just tries
:29:52. > :30:00.to promote the red and push the green belt, maybe. A difficult shot.
:30:01. > :30:03.It is a hard shot. We have to get it absolutely perfect. He has a
:30:04. > :30:12.difficult backhand shot. To promote the red is difficult. It is a health
:30:13. > :30:22.board she is looking for. -- a half bowl. Possibly bowl and clean if he
:30:23. > :30:30.gets it on the time. He has been playing these runners under. Well,
:30:31. > :30:36.actually, that is a lot better. A lot better for Foster. He will be
:30:37. > :30:48.happy. That is a good result, actually.
:30:49. > :31:10.Paul will not be disappointed in any way with that. Needs to come back
:31:11. > :31:15.in, and Claire is calling it. It will have go on to the restored.
:31:16. > :31:29.Only allowed to do it once, and he knows that. Must be in the area.
:31:30. > :31:40.Very close, what a result! That is a fantastic result. Wow! I thought the
:31:41. > :31:49.ball had to go with it. An amazing result. Definitely have to see that
:31:50. > :31:54.again. Look at that, just the angle. That's it, he hit it on the high
:31:55. > :31:59.side, the Jack went straight back and the green bowl went off to the
:32:00. > :32:04.side. That's not easy to beat. No commies got about three or four
:32:05. > :32:11.feet, taking his time here. Quite right, take your time, get yourself
:32:12. > :32:16.composed. The last bowl of the game for Nikki. This is very difficult.
:32:17. > :32:23.He played a few big bowls like this against Alex Marshall in the
:32:24. > :32:37.semifinal, can he play another? He's definitely up. How close to the
:32:38. > :32:42.ditch? APPLAUSE. Fantastic. Who's down at the business end, you can
:32:43. > :32:48.tell. There's no doubt about it, this has been gladiatorial I think.
:32:49. > :32:54.The skips have been knocking nine bells out of each other.
:32:55. > :33:03.Sensational. The red bowl that they could see nearest the green is
:33:04. > :33:06.blocking the path. I think you can probably time it around because it
:33:07. > :33:17.is so close to the ditch but if he tries to draw it on the backhand, he
:33:18. > :33:26.has to get within one foot. I think it's fair to say the three bowl
:33:27. > :33:34.mixed pairs is it. I think it is here to stay! What do you do, Paul?
:33:35. > :33:38.This is fantastic stuff, it really is. What can Paul do here? I think
:33:39. > :33:47.he will try to push the bowl out on the forehand. The timing shot is
:33:48. > :33:53.available. Let's see if he draws this, this will be shot of the week.
:33:54. > :33:58.He's trying to draw it, all what bowl this would be. Paul Foster, one
:33:59. > :34:12.of the few players in the world that would even attempt this. The line is
:34:13. > :34:16.good. Oh! He was right to try and draw it because he had so much
:34:17. > :34:24.confidence in his ability. I have to say, that is one of the best
:34:25. > :34:27.pairings I have ever seen. Wonderful game, anybody could have won the
:34:28. > :34:46.tournament but well done to Claire and Nikki.
:34:47. > :34:54.Rightly so, a standing ovation. Without a shadow of a doubt. Great
:34:55. > :34:59.bowls, right from the first end we were treated to something very
:35:00. > :35:04.special. There were so many good bowls.
:35:05. > :35:12.Claire is coming on looking very relaxed, I have to say. The first
:35:13. > :35:20.new pens were tense, but Nikki Brett was doing a lot of damage. Paul
:35:21. > :35:28.Foster, doing what he does best, forcing Nikki into playing running
:35:29. > :35:36.bowls, but Brett proves he can draw as well. Then Paul Foster, that was
:35:37. > :35:43.a great bowl, fantastic delivery. Take a bowl out and stay. Nick Brett
:35:44. > :35:52.just pulling that through for a double. Going into the last end of
:35:53. > :35:57.the second set 7-7, but Nick Brett, what a bowl to win the match. Paul
:35:58. > :36:02.on the reply is just dropped in but honestly that was fantastic bowls,
:36:03. > :36:13.full entertainment and you couldn't ask for any more than that. Well,
:36:14. > :36:25.11-10, the total shots scored, just one in it. Claire Johnston's first
:36:26. > :36:29.final here at Potters and she will remember it.
:36:30. > :36:31.It was an amazing game, and rightly the players received a standing
:36:32. > :36:36.ovation but first I will speak to the runners-up. It was a wonderful
:36:37. > :36:43.want to be involved with, but obviously coming out of the losing
:36:44. > :36:50.side, what did you make of that dramatic tie-break? It was certainly
:36:51. > :36:55.something different. Lost for words really, I felt I played probably the
:36:56. > :37:02.best I've played all week actually. I wanted to set Paul up well, then
:37:03. > :37:11.Nikki had a good game, so worthy winners. Well played. Paul, you had
:37:12. > :37:18.to produce some magnificent bowls just stay it. Yes, I thought Rebecca
:37:19. > :37:24.was brilliant today. This fella here on the end, he played unbelievable,
:37:25. > :37:28.especially in the first set and deserved to win the first set. We
:37:29. > :37:33.fought back hard, then the tie-break. Within two inches of the
:37:34. > :37:38.jack, then he played a wonderful bowl and you have to put your hands
:37:39. > :37:47.up and say congratulation. He's not the champion for nothing. I threw it
:37:48. > :37:55.heavy on my last bowl. It was great to be involved in, I wasn't
:37:56. > :37:59.disappointed to lose, but well done to them because they played really
:38:00. > :38:05.well. There was lovely sportsmanship between all four players but one
:38:06. > :38:10.thing we enjoyed was watching your facial expressions all the way
:38:11. > :38:17.through, Claire. There was exasperation, disbelief, what did
:38:18. > :38:22.you go through? I just had to dig deep. I'm not used to playing in the
:38:23. > :38:26.portable rink at this level and these guys are so I had to hold
:38:27. > :38:30.myself together and give nick something but it has been an honour
:38:31. > :38:36.for me to come here and play with him. It has been a joy and I will
:38:37. > :38:41.treasure the moment. You certainly have played your part today as well.
:38:42. > :38:47.Paul referred to a couple of magical bowls you played, we will go to the
:38:48. > :38:51.last bowl of the second end tie-break, the penultimate one where
:38:52. > :38:55.you got the jack, it was fantastic but to produce what Paul said was a
:38:56. > :39:01.once-in-a-lifetime effort, talk us through that. If you have only got
:39:02. > :39:10.one in a lifetime, I've wasted it, haven't I?
:39:11. > :39:14.LAUGHTER. I don't mean wasted it, but I've used it. When it is your
:39:15. > :39:21.day, sometimes they go your way and I got lucky to bowl a good pace
:39:22. > :39:28.really. It would have been unlucky to miss. It has been great playing
:39:29. > :39:33.all week with Claire. I have been missing with runners all over the
:39:34. > :39:36.show and she just said never mind. She has been great really, just
:39:37. > :39:42.letting me get on with some good ones. When I played a good one she's
:39:43. > :39:45.said well done, when I've played bad ones I have apologised and she has
:39:46. > :39:50.said don't worry about it, just get on with it. Paul and Rebecca were
:39:51. > :39:58.fantastic today and I'm sweating like a pig here. It was hard work,
:39:59. > :40:03.but most certainly deserved. Well played to all four players. Sadly
:40:04. > :40:07.Paul and Rebecca were on the losing end today but a fantastic effort in
:40:08. > :40:19.defeat. Ladies and gentlemen, the mixed pairs champions 2017, Claire
:40:20. > :40:24.Johnston and Nicky Brett. Well, it is presentation time now,
:40:25. > :40:31.ladies and gentlemen, and here to make that presentation, the managing
:40:32. > :40:42.director of Potters resort, Mr John Potter, and Peter Buoy. And how
:40:43. > :40:49.about these runners-up, they gave us such a magnificent final. Your
:40:50. > :41:09.appreciation for Rebecca peel and Paul Foster MBE!
:41:10. > :41:17.APPLAUSE -- Rebecca Field. Your winners, receiving a line glass
:41:18. > :41:22.trophy, each cheque and the title of the 2017 mixed pairs match play
:41:23. > :41:30.champions, it is of course Claire Johnston Nick Brett!
:41:31. > :41:53.APPLAUSE. Come on, ladies and gentlemen, one
:41:54. > :41:59.more time. How about these winners there, the 2017 mixed pairs match
:42:00. > :42:08.play champions, Claire Johnston and Nick Brett!
:42:09. > :42:14.APPLAUSE. We thought yesterday's performance
:42:15. > :42:19.in winning the pairs was fantastic, this performance has superseded it
:42:20. > :42:25.from Claire and Nicky today. A reminder the Australian open tennis
:42:26. > :42:32.highlights follows us today at 4:45pm on BBC Two, and we are back
:42:33. > :42:46.with action on the BBC app, BBC sport online. At 7:30pm tonight we
:42:47. > :42:55.will be showing the match between Wilford and Foster. But up next is a
:42:56. > :43:04.clash between last year's runner-up, Robert Paxton and Jamie Chestney,
:43:05. > :43:09.who has broken into the top 16. The format for this match is now active
:43:10. > :43:15.nine Elms, four bowls each, and there is the shot clock for each
:43:16. > :43:19.player to be aware of. Firstly we will hear from Jamie Chestney, who
:43:20. > :43:32.has broken into the top 16. Let's give this a try. I've enjoyed
:43:33. > :43:39.participating and watching pretty much any sport. I live particularly
:43:40. > :43:47.close to Exeter Chiefs Rugby ground in Exeter so I get there as often as
:43:48. > :43:53.I can. Rugby, football, and I play squash, go cycling, so sport is a
:43:54. > :44:01.major part of my life. I don't play a lot of snooker, no, I have played
:44:02. > :44:06.a bit here to kill time between matches. I knocked in the 38 break
:44:07. > :44:12.last week but more by luck than judgment. I was playing with Les
:44:13. > :44:17.Gillett and Mark Dawes and they will vouch for the fact I cannot get much
:44:18. > :44:21.straight. I like to play an attacking game. Everyone knows if
:44:22. > :44:28.you are going to do well in these championships, it is going to be a
:44:29. > :44:32.job involved to win you the match. The first two bowls are crucial. You
:44:33. > :44:39.can get yourself out of trouble with attacking bowls but you cannot win
:44:40. > :44:45.with that. I played Rob here last week in the pairs. We both play in
:44:46. > :44:50.the same county. In outdoor bowls as well. We have probably played each
:44:51. > :45:01.other ten, 20 times over the years in various different formats.
:45:02. > :45:08.We play the qualities the other person has so it will be about who
:45:09. > :45:13.can perform on the day. It is so tough, every single round you play,
:45:14. > :45:16.especially against one of the top 16 players, everyone can beat anybody
:45:17. > :45:21.on their day. The most important thing for me is to go out there and
:45:22. > :45:26.try to perform to the best of my ability. If I can play well, I give
:45:27. > :45:31.myself a chance against everybody, but if I don't go out there and
:45:32. > :45:35.perform, you will be in trouble. The ambition has got to be to try to win
:45:36. > :45:41.the world indoor singles, it would be the biggest achievement in my
:45:42. > :45:48.bowls career. Stick to the bowls I think. He has done a pretty good job
:45:49. > :45:52.of sticking to the bowls. I say he's broken into the top 16 in the last
:45:53. > :45:59.year, he's earned that but one place is always done well is here, from
:46:00. > :46:04.the very first time he turned up to Potters. Yes, he likes it here. He's
:46:05. > :46:08.a very fluent player, he rolls them in well, he's a quick player as we
:46:09. > :46:14.will see but also a very confident player and this will be a tough test
:46:15. > :46:23.for Paxton. What about the style of play? We spoke about his
:46:24. > :46:28.personality, Jamie Chestney, is there something he needs to work on
:46:29. > :46:31.to send him into the highest stratosphere? Yes, it's about moving
:46:32. > :46:35.up that gear when he needs to. I played him in the first round of the
:46:36. > :46:43.Scottish open international... Was he playing that long ago? It was
:46:44. > :46:47.last November, would you believe it, and I got the last bowl to beat him
:46:48. > :46:51.so he needs to step up. I think what will happen is he needs to move into
:46:52. > :46:56.a different gear against Robert Paxton who put him under a lot more
:46:57. > :47:00.pressure, but Robert Paxton knows he's in the game here. Talk to me
:47:01. > :47:09.about Robert Paxton because last year was a fantastic effort at
:47:10. > :47:14.Potters, he's been doing well in the mixed pairs and pairs as well as the
:47:15. > :47:19.singles. He knows what it is all about, he's been in the pairs. The
:47:20. > :47:29.thing about Robert Paxton is his very dedicated and he will work
:47:30. > :47:33.hard. He wants to be world number one and that his drive. Would it be
:47:34. > :47:46.fair to say Robert Paxton is probably aware where Jamie Chestney
:47:47. > :47:51.is now? Yes, he really needs to just say to himself what do I want, and
:47:52. > :48:01.Jamie will want Robert Paxton's place, and Robert Paxton wants Paul
:48:02. > :48:07.Foster's place. We can hear from Robert Paxton now. The last 12
:48:08. > :48:10.months have been a fantastic ride, I'm coming here full of confidence
:48:11. > :48:15.so looking to do well and possibly one game better than last year. I've
:48:16. > :48:18.had my first child which was a great experience and we have been waiting
:48:19. > :48:24.a long time for the little one to come along so he's very special to
:48:25. > :48:28.us. It changes it on the bowls from. The main issue is when you are on
:48:29. > :48:40.the green and things aren't going quite right, or afterwards, if you
:48:41. > :48:43.come off after a defeat, you look at pictures and things like that or
:48:44. > :48:46.hopefully if he's at the venue you forget what happened and get on with
:48:47. > :48:50.looking after him. It makes things easier really. After a bad defeat.
:48:51. > :48:55.I've been told there's no chance he will be bowling, from the good lady
:48:56. > :49:00.at home, but actually someone sent down a set of bowls at three days
:49:01. > :49:04.old engraved with his full name and date of birth on, which was very
:49:05. > :49:08.nice, but it's up to him basically. If he wants to give it ago, he can
:49:09. > :49:15.but Louise wants him to go down the rugby route to be honest. This will
:49:16. > :49:18.be a tough match for Paxton against Jamie Chestney, emerging as one of
:49:19. > :49:20.the top players in the world. It is time to hand over to our MC once
:49:21. > :49:34.again. Richard. Ladies and gentlemen, a former under
:49:35. > :49:39.25s singles champion, your appreciation please for Jamie
:49:40. > :49:54.Chestney. APPLAUSE. And this world number
:49:55. > :50:01.three has had a fruitful few seasons, securing his place in the
:50:02. > :50:04.world's top 16. Last year 's world indoors singles finalist, your
:50:05. > :50:12.appreciation, please, for Robert Paxton.
:50:13. > :50:25.APPLAUSE. Always a tough act to follow when we
:50:26. > :50:35.have just had the fantastic final but we did with the mixed pairs, and
:50:36. > :50:40.they produced something special but I'm sure many who watched the final
:50:41. > :50:44.will remember for quite a while. Robert Paxton and Jamie Chestney are
:50:45. > :50:49.extremely talented players, and about to do battle here for a spot
:50:50. > :50:55.in the last 16, and we will go to the commentary box. Greg Harlow has
:50:56. > :51:01.had a very busy day, Corky. His in there alongside COMMENTATOR: Yes,
:51:02. > :51:05.Greg is here with me, suitably recovered.
:51:06. > :51:09.Still a little bit exhausted to be honest. I was going to have a few
:51:10. > :51:14.beers and remembered I've got to come in here and talk the game so
:51:15. > :51:20.back to the ring for an hour and relax, and ready for a good game
:51:21. > :51:30.this afternoon. Beer is not allowed, Greg. Maybe one or two later. Jamie
:51:31. > :51:36.Chestney, you will know him very well of course. Yes, I've backed him
:51:37. > :51:41.for a number of years. When he was young I thought he was going to
:51:42. > :51:46.break through. He sort of didn't quite fulfil his potential then, but
:51:47. > :51:57.now he's every bit as good as any player on the circuit. He's a very
:51:58. > :52:01.natural sort of player, Jamie. And Robert Paxton, he has been Mr
:52:02. > :52:09.consistency over the last while, and he's always at latter stages.
:52:10. > :52:14.Looking at the second round draw, this is the pick of the matches.
:52:15. > :52:24.People would class this is a very even match, two top players. I think
:52:25. > :52:29.now Jamie is secure in the top 16, relaxing little bit more and then
:52:30. > :52:33.joining the games, whereas obviously when he was trying to break in there
:52:34. > :52:36.when nerves and pressure on every single game, every point he could
:52:37. > :52:41.score. He certainly looks more relaxed when he's playing now. Yes,
:52:42. > :52:54.it's about getting the seeded players against each other. We have
:52:55. > :53:01.other matches to look forward to, including King and Marshall, always
:53:02. > :53:06.intriguing. Yes, top matches. For me, this was the pick of the round.
:53:07. > :53:11.You sometimes see two players evenly matched and you think that is the
:53:12. > :53:16.one I want to watch. When you ask players what's going to happen, they
:53:17. > :53:21.say I don't know, I really don't. Still, they will have to go through
:53:22. > :53:26.the problem of course of playing on the ring after an unbelievable
:53:27. > :53:31.final, and people have left the auditorium. They will be coming back
:53:32. > :53:35.after a comfort break. Yes, it is always the hardest session to play,
:53:36. > :53:40.vinyls are always slightly longer than a normal match. People will go
:53:41. > :53:48.out for a comfort break, a cup of tee and a glass of lemonade. Robert
:53:49. > :53:52.and Jamie will know this, it won't be a shock to them but it is still
:53:53. > :53:58.quite hard when you are trying to get into your rhythm. It is a good
:53:59. > :54:04.start at this end, I have to say, for Jamie Chestney. Yes, either of
:54:05. > :54:09.these two can choose the forehand or the backhand to play. He wanders
:54:10. > :54:13.down, he never seems to be in a hurry in his life. He never looks
:54:14. > :54:19.bothered, I can guarantee he is bothered. He just has that air of I
:54:20. > :54:26.will wander down, throw the bowl down the other end and see where it
:54:27. > :54:30.lands. It looks like it's landing in the third position, that will be
:54:31. > :54:35.tempting for the runner but there is space to draw for a good second.
:54:36. > :54:42.Yes, two options. Obviously drive through the front red. Or there is a
:54:43. > :54:53.drop either way, depends how he feels on the first end. Probably the
:54:54. > :54:58.drive. Needs it solid. Slipped a little bit wide out of the hand. He
:54:59. > :55:09.will be disappointed to miss the whole head. As we said, Jamie has
:55:10. > :55:15.been around quite a while now. 30 years of age, he really should be
:55:16. > :55:42.making his move into the top echelon of the indoor game will
:55:43. > :55:53.played well against Alex Marshall just a couple of months ago in
:55:54. > :55:57.Scotland, 10-6, 7-6. Played very well in the first round here as
:55:58. > :56:11.well. I watched that game, very impressive.
:56:12. > :56:42.That looks like it is nearly up the middle.
:56:43. > :56:53.The different jack length, and a little bit on the loose side. As we
:56:54. > :56:58.said, I think after that great final it is going to take a couple of
:56:59. > :57:03.errands for the players to settle down, find their pace. -- a couple
:57:04. > :57:52.of ends. Robert down on a similar line.
:57:53. > :57:58.APPLAUSE. Well, Jamie is quite an aggressive player, those two bowls
:57:59. > :58:03.will go. Yes, I think it is a good head to drive. If he gets the second
:58:04. > :58:10.bowl first, both should go with no jack movement. Looking for it to
:58:11. > :58:21.turn a fraction. Unlucky. Just got it solid, wanted it half all on the
:58:22. > :58:27.right side. -- half bowl. I saw Robert on his way down to the arena,
:58:28. > :58:32.I said to him good luck going on after that. He looked at me and
:58:33. > :58:40.said, it will be tough. Yes, always the one the players would rather
:58:41. > :58:47.avoid, to be honest. It looks like he's going to be in for a double. Is
:58:48. > :58:56.it going to stop? It ran a little bit. Certainly did. Just the one.
:58:57. > :59:06.That was very much a missed chance. Yes, unlike Rob. Normally when his
:59:07. > :59:12.rolled one or two in, he makes the third one. The crowd is starting to
:59:13. > :59:16.sneak back in now. Probably about half an hour until it is totally
:59:17. > :59:20.full again. That's when the disturbance starts for the players.
:59:21. > :59:29.They just need to take their time and let people settle. The jack
:59:30. > :00:16.measures 29.5 metres. I find it was a little bit warmer in
:00:17. > :00:22.there this morning. There is a little bit of extra turn on that
:00:23. > :00:28.forehand. It worked in my favour for one. Earlier in the week I couldn't
:00:29. > :00:34.quite get them back. With the touch of eight I felt I was getting back
:00:35. > :00:54.that little bit extra. Everybody is using strong biased balls as well.
:00:55. > :01:05.He never gives nothing away. Looks OK to me. I am not sure if he will
:01:06. > :01:11.reach it. Sometimes he just gets the ball away and you see the flick of
:01:12. > :01:23.the arm. Robert has got a lovely easy, smooth follow-through.
:01:24. > :01:46.Not going to make the trip, but he is going to be in an awkward place.
:01:47. > :02:28.Something about this does not look right. Well, that is most unlike
:02:29. > :02:33.Robert Paxton. He has put one in there and he is nowhere on the next
:02:34. > :02:40.two. It is very strange when he does that. Very unusual. He is usually
:02:41. > :02:53.very good at the draw shot. Just a little shake off the hit. An
:02:54. > :03:07.opportunity for Jamie. He has not pushed through it either. Pretty
:03:08. > :03:13.loose stuff at the moment. The crowd leaving, coming back in again. Will
:03:14. > :03:26.that effect the pace of the rink? For 20 or 30 minutes.
:03:27. > :03:36.Robert just allowing the opportunity. There we go. The guide
:03:37. > :03:42.dog. Just lying there sleeping, most of the time. Very friendly if you
:03:43. > :04:29.come after him. He will sit up and let you have a little of his hit.
:04:30. > :04:53.A quiet reply from Jimmy. That is more like it. What we expected.
:04:54. > :05:02.The smallest of corrections needed here from Robert. I think he has
:05:03. > :05:04.missed the line. Or the place. It is one or the other. It is not quite
:05:05. > :05:54.right. The couple of inches to draw the
:05:55. > :06:08.shot. Switching to his forehand. He is on a good track.
:06:09. > :06:20.That is a good attempt from Robert. It helps Jamie. Jamie will be drawn
:06:21. > :06:25.to that if he draws the second shot. Forget about the jack, play toward
:06:26. > :06:41.the bowl. He is giving this a go. Just need to bend quicker.
:06:42. > :06:50.All the manufacturers of bowls are getting a good run out on this
:06:51. > :06:56.event. I think it is a fairly evenly spread across all the players. The
:06:57. > :07:03.one common denominator is the strength of the virus. No, no,
:07:04. > :07:15.something wrong with this. That is not like, at all. He is not finding
:07:16. > :07:26.the level of consistency that we are used to. A reasonable opportunity
:07:27. > :07:33.for a second shot. If he plays the same food as his third, he can rest.
:07:34. > :07:47.Either red or green for a second. He is in with a chance. No, hit it too
:07:48. > :07:51.solid. A missed chance. It doesn't seem too desperate for important at
:07:52. > :07:56.this stage but once you get to the last eight or nine ends it is
:07:57. > :08:03.important. Same as Robert. Cannot miss the spares. Who ever loses the
:08:04. > :08:07.set does look back on the early ends and think that is where I could have
:08:08. > :08:14.won it when I had the extra opportunities with no pressure.
:08:15. > :08:25.Francis Fletcher marking this match for us. Jamie has got the Mac quite
:08:26. > :08:29.a wave of the green. Perhaps he has just gone out to keep chopping it
:08:30. > :08:41.about to try to unsettle Rob a little bit. A good opener.
:08:42. > :08:46.Surprising that some players go out and they want to play the same
:08:47. > :08:49.length of the time, others want to move about. It is amazing the
:08:50. > :08:56.different tactics that go into these games. Robert is just scratching
:08:57. > :09:01.around at the moment. This is a chance for Jamie to start scoring a
:09:02. > :09:07.few shots on that board. Robert is struggling. If Robert is struggling,
:09:08. > :09:11.keep moving it about, don't keep playing the same length and bringing
:09:12. > :09:15.him into the game. That is the best way. Sometimes it can be a bit
:09:16. > :09:21.scrappy but you don't care if the scoreboard is turning over. Is he
:09:22. > :09:27.going to go for a draw or a big drive early? I will be surprised if
:09:28. > :09:33.he has a go at this, just to get the frustration out of his arm. He
:09:34. > :09:43.certainly is, it is straight, can he miss his own?
:09:44. > :09:49.They forehand drop for Jamie, ideally he would like to turn the
:09:50. > :09:56.jack around the corner and out of salad. -- out of sight. He does not
:09:57. > :10:08.want to leave anything wide to frame it. If he makes the middle of the
:10:09. > :10:17.rink it will protect a little bit. I think Robert just draw this, surely.
:10:18. > :10:24.Yes. You put yourself in a terrible position, for down, if you missed
:10:25. > :10:45.this. Good enough for third, but only just.
:10:46. > :10:56.He has put his hand out as if to say it might be a little bit quicker.
:10:57. > :10:57.What she is. After two good openers, he has not played a good third or
:10:58. > :11:23.fourth. A narrow line from Rob. He just
:11:24. > :11:33.needs to run up and reach. Better with garden this one. A touch on the
:11:34. > :11:40.front bowl would be good. You are not going to get away with that in
:11:41. > :11:44.too many ends for the whole match. He needs to change something.
:11:45. > :11:50.Excellent recovery, I have to say. Perfect draw. Keep it nice and
:11:51. > :12:03.tight. Jackson and 29 metres. -- jack
:12:04. > :12:55.length 29 metres. Once again, Jamie getting in with
:12:56. > :13:04.the first bowl and Robert missing. Seven inches, it is enough room to
:13:05. > :13:09.drop off either hand. Probably looks slightly better from the map. You
:13:10. > :13:13.can just see the jack on the right-hand side. Good approach. That
:13:14. > :14:13.is going to have to carry a bit. That will do. It is scratching
:14:14. > :14:17.around for one of those in every end. He will be happy he is there,
:14:18. > :14:25.but he will know he needs to get the first one for at least one of the
:14:26. > :14:32.first two there. Jamie is a great line again but he is just under the
:14:33. > :14:37.pace. That will make it harder. It will force the to come in a bit
:14:38. > :14:43.wider. A nice little one for Robert to get past. If you can get past the
:14:44. > :14:48.first bowl it will hide it in for a double. He could choose either hand
:14:49. > :15:02.here. No danger either way. He is going for the backhand. Nice
:15:03. > :15:14.approach. If it runs a touch more he will begin. It is just one good
:15:15. > :15:21.bowl. It is a very good one. But just one. A very good one, hard to
:15:22. > :15:41.beat. He has a guy wandering down in his guideline. He will take a seat.
:15:42. > :15:48.There he is. The umpire is nice and alert, they stopped the shot clock
:15:49. > :15:55.there. Forehand draw, the line has been good three times. He is
:15:56. > :16:00.certainly further this time. Just going to get the edge. Good effort,
:16:01. > :16:11.the wait was perfect, but it is another single. I think, on
:16:12. > :16:17.reflection, both players will be happy it is for all. Neither have
:16:18. > :16:24.really found their true forum. It is a bit scratchy. It is one of those
:16:25. > :16:28.ones where you will have to dig deep to get something out of it. Unless
:16:29. > :16:35.one player suddenly finds their range. They would be away and
:16:36. > :16:40.running. Usually what happens is one player finds their range and the
:16:41. > :16:54.other follows suit. That quite often happens. They respond to each other.
:16:55. > :16:57.Robert decided he has not played the forehand well enough in this
:16:58. > :16:59.direction so he has swapped to the backhand to see if he can find a
:17:00. > :17:14.better opening bowl. A nice wide line in. Is he going to
:17:15. > :18:09.run? It looks better this time. A good
:18:10. > :18:13.correction from both players. I think that will force rather
:18:14. > :18:23.Thornton beforehand. They touch on the jack could make to. He has a
:18:24. > :18:40.good line for it. Pushing it forward. That is more like it. Two
:18:41. > :18:45.good prose. He is not giving Jamie much to play with because an
:18:46. > :18:52.extension on the jack is not good. He has gone big. Needs a contact. He
:18:53. > :18:58.has got it. That is the one thing he didn't want was a run through to the
:18:59. > :19:02.jack. That is pretty horrible now. He was looking for bowl and clean,
:19:03. > :19:08.which would have been great. Even worse, pull out jack and onto the
:19:09. > :19:18.respot. A delicate touch and now he is in worse position before he
:19:19. > :19:22.played drive. The draw shot for Robert on either side. That is why
:19:23. > :19:36.she feels so close with the last one. Just repeated. -- just repeat
:19:37. > :19:40.it. Looking good. That is the best end for Robert Paxton. He has played
:19:41. > :19:46.three really good clothes there. That is more like what we are used
:19:47. > :19:50.to seeing from him. I think it is a forehand draw here for Jamie. There
:19:51. > :19:56.is not a gap between the front two to drive. It would be a tough one to
:19:57. > :20:08.drive that. It will have to be a forehand draw. Unless he can see the
:20:09. > :20:13.gap. Shaving for a drive, isn't he? This will have to be quick and
:20:14. > :20:18.straight. Didn't quite look like there was enough room through there,
:20:19. > :20:32.did there? He must have been able to see it, but we couldn't. A good end
:20:33. > :20:58.from Robert Paxton there. First time I have seen his true forum.
:20:59. > :21:07.Just taking his time. There are still a few spectators coming in and
:21:08. > :21:11.finding their seats. Yes, as well as that, both players realise how
:21:12. > :21:15.important the first bowl of the end is. Get in nice and tight with your
:21:16. > :21:44.first one, it takes off all the pressure for the rest of the end.
:21:45. > :22:18.Robert, I think you have dropped this game. -- this I gain. I just
:22:19. > :22:24.wonder what is happening out there. When you are on your own jack, you
:22:25. > :22:28.have played a good end, if you push through and this then you have a
:22:29. > :22:32.chance to wrap up the set. Rob has put hours and hours of practice in
:22:33. > :22:44.on this length, so you would expect better than he has played. Jamie has
:22:45. > :22:48.got to touch, that helps his cause. You would expect Rob to just drop
:22:49. > :22:55.the shot quite easily, but the pressure of the World Championships,
:22:56. > :23:05.it is certainly on a good road, pushing it forward. A little touch
:23:06. > :23:27.as well, not enough for the set. A good second.
:23:28. > :23:43.Is it going to drop for true? It is indeed. Rob certainly had the line
:23:44. > :23:49.on all three. Just needs of the smallest correction for this one. If
:23:50. > :23:56.you do just overplay, it doesn't peg back. If he overplay city and quite
:23:57. > :24:03.get back. The line is certainly good enough. He has pushed it out on a
:24:04. > :24:10.nice wide line, it is all about arriving in time. It needs to be
:24:11. > :24:21.there. For short balls, it will be costly. This is obviously a very
:24:22. > :24:28.important specialty. The free draw. Not much room that he has played a
:24:29. > :24:39.good one with his third. He will fancy slotting another in. He can
:24:40. > :24:51.afford and the wiki once. The length and the jack will not make any
:24:52. > :24:56.difference. That is good. A weekend from Robert Paxton. He played short
:24:57. > :25:15.balls like that and you will get punished.
:25:16. > :25:20.Both players played some good stuff, both played some loose stuff as
:25:21. > :25:27.well, but they will have to forget about that. It is all about winning.
:25:28. > :25:33.Last end of the first set. Rob will be happy to come away with a drama
:25:34. > :25:44.set. Just the level of inconsistency, to get something out
:25:45. > :25:48.would be good for him. It is one of those situations, Jamie has just got
:25:49. > :25:50.the advantage on the board but rather has last ball. Evens things
:25:51. > :26:11.up a little bit. Two reasonable openers. I don't
:26:12. > :26:14.think either of those will win the end. Still plenty of those to be
:26:15. > :26:42.play yet. Once again, advantage to Jamie. A
:26:43. > :26:47.little bit of movement there. The clock has been stopped at 22
:26:48. > :26:54.seconds. It will be restarted again, but that is the time for Robert. The
:26:55. > :26:58.officials are very sharp on that, if they find any disturbance around
:26:59. > :27:04.they are very quick. The stop the shot clock. It needs to Harry. That
:27:05. > :27:20.is not going to help, is it? There is obviously something going
:27:21. > :27:25.on in the arena, Jamie is having to stop now. A terrible time for a
:27:26. > :27:34.little bit of disturbance. I can see what it is. Jamie deciding he is
:27:35. > :27:40.very happy the way the hit lies. He will be looking to beat the back red
:27:41. > :27:50.bowl. He lays he said. He wants to cover so he doesn't lose the set.
:27:51. > :27:54.Not bad, not bad at all. I think Robert might be looking at this and
:27:55. > :27:59.think I can hit the red bowl through but there is a drop there as well.
:28:00. > :28:03.If he plays the strike it will give more of an indication of his
:28:04. > :28:07.confidence. If it is a strike it will open it up to give him a chance
:28:08. > :28:14.with the last bowl. He will be drawing to win, driving to save.
:28:15. > :28:22.Sticking with the draw. That is the right shot. It is the right shot. He
:28:23. > :28:28.is in the area for the jack, he needs to get the kind connection. He
:28:29. > :28:34.hasn't got it, I think. It has just bounced off his own. It shows you
:28:35. > :28:38.how good Jamie's positional bowl was there. Is the Green gold log in if
:28:39. > :28:46.Robert decides to drive with his last. I think it is. Certainly
:28:47. > :28:52.enough to make it very difficult. I don't think there is a gap
:28:53. > :28:58.sufficiently big enough. If it is locked in, does Jamie consider
:28:59. > :29:09.playing a blocker? As I am looking at it here, Robert hasn't got a
:29:10. > :29:14.great deal on. Do you just go round the back and leave it to him and say
:29:15. > :29:18.there you go? I would be tempted to leave it because he can draw it on
:29:19. > :29:25.the backhand. He has played some very good single bones, Robert. Gone
:29:26. > :29:28.for the blocker, I think. He hasn't played too many groupings. He is
:29:29. > :29:35.trying to swim across onto the backhand. I don't know. Where I am
:29:36. > :29:44.sitting, that is not a bad blocker. Did he think he will go heavy? He is
:29:45. > :29:48.looking at all the angles. It is a long way down but I think he is
:29:49. > :29:54.looking at the three bowl planned. Read on to the that isn't set right.
:29:55. > :30:01.The green ball will go on to the jack. He is looking at that onto the
:30:02. > :30:06.green ball which doesn't look right to me.
:30:07. > :30:14.As hard as it seems, it looks like a backhand draw is all he has got. But
:30:15. > :30:23.we cannot see all the angles from here. I think Jamie's blocker is a
:30:24. > :30:27.decent bowl. I think he's better chopping in on the forehand but it
:30:28. > :30:34.will be interesting to see what he plays. If he's going big, he's
:30:35. > :30:39.looking for a real result. He's going big... And he missed. He
:30:40. > :30:43.nearly smashed the whole lot into the ditch. Speculative shot, didn't
:30:44. > :31:11.work out. The jack has been bouncing about a
:31:12. > :31:18.little bit. Paxton going for the longer jack and Jamie sticking to
:31:19. > :31:23.the short. Very hard to get into a regular... Oh, my goodness, the jack
:31:24. > :31:28.is going short there. Difficult to get into a regular place if you are
:31:29. > :31:35.jumping about with the jacks. I don't think Jamie will go much
:31:36. > :31:46.longer, he's moved the Matt back a little bit. He's taking it back to,
:31:47. > :31:51.well my favourite position really, a couple of metres from the... 25.5
:31:52. > :31:59.metres, that's where he's playing the jack length. I think when you
:32:00. > :32:04.are playing really well, Greg, and things are going good, you don't
:32:05. > :32:08.notice those just as much. You don't notice anything when you are
:32:09. > :32:12.playing, you are on autopilot. You're not thinking about anything.
:32:13. > :32:17.When you are struggling, you're thinking about delivery and weight
:32:18. > :32:23.control. Little bit of movement can catch your eye and put you off. But
:32:24. > :32:28.Robert was obviously going for a 23 metre jack so he was looking to
:32:29. > :32:30.change things totally, but he cast it too short so Jamie gets to put it
:32:31. > :33:28.on his favourite length. Jamie has turned his back on this
:33:29. > :33:42.really quickly, he doesn't like this at all. Oh, pushed through it.
:33:43. > :33:55.The last, two feet short of jack height.
:33:56. > :34:16.Looks good here. Yes, good bowl. APPLAUSE Still sitting off the side,
:34:17. > :34:21.but a good weight. Yes, Jamie just looking to draw it off. It is
:34:22. > :34:31.adjacent, it just needs to run a touch. Perfect line.
:34:32. > :34:45.Not much reaction from Robert. He is having to work very, very hard. It
:34:46. > :34:50.is more frustration for the player when you are not hitting your form.
:34:51. > :34:56.It doesn't matter what the opposition is doing, they really
:34:57. > :35:00.have to work on their own game. This looks every bit as good as the
:35:01. > :35:10.third. He would like to make it harder for Jamie to get in. If Jamie
:35:11. > :35:17.wants to, he could go strong at that. I think he has already made
:35:18. > :35:25.his mind up, he's going to draw. He was on a great line last time, he
:35:26. > :35:34.just needs a bit more pace. Trying with this, is he going to get back?
:35:35. > :35:38.Yes, I think he is. The clean jack is worth the double. He just shaved
:35:39. > :35:49.it, but he got the single. Good shot. Coming in there, you think
:35:50. > :35:53.perhaps he's going to make two, but happy to score the one. Asking for a
:35:54. > :36:20.measure. The two guys will be chatting away
:36:21. > :36:21.of course, colleagues on the international team and they know
:36:22. > :36:41.each other well. Looks like just the one. I think
:36:42. > :36:47.that was in by a margin. Jamie not too good at the measures? He
:36:48. > :36:51.normally is, to be fair, but sometimes you look at it from one
:36:52. > :36:56.side and favour your own. You call for a measure, go around the other
:36:57. > :37:02.side and then you can see it is well in. Once you have called for a
:37:03. > :37:09.measure, the umpire is normally on. Realistically you know the outcome.
:37:10. > :37:16.Obviously our mate Andy Thomson is brilliant at calling the measures.
:37:17. > :37:18.He gets so much stick, doesn't he? Never was good. It's not just a
:37:19. > :38:20.recent thing. Looks a little bit different, this
:38:21. > :38:23.one. Edging forward, didn't push. Neither player really, once they
:38:24. > :38:28.have played one good one have followed it up with the second and
:38:29. > :38:36.third, have they? It is almost like a game that you think to yourself,
:38:37. > :38:44.after a really good final it has been hard for the players to settle.
:38:45. > :38:50.He has brought the jack out into the open. Just the one called. Possible
:38:51. > :39:02.backhand drive from Jamie. Sits nice. Resisted. That's very
:39:03. > :39:15.controlled. Needs to arrive at this on this line though, needs to hurry.
:39:16. > :39:18.He needs to be deep, at the very least he needs on behind the head
:39:19. > :39:24.but he won't be happy about moving it. He has the last bowl so he will
:39:25. > :39:29.be trying to draw another shot. Slipped by, in a good position.
:39:30. > :39:35.Jamie really hasn't got that much now, far from just the drop. He can
:39:36. > :39:47.turn the jack to his own for two. Positive draw.
:39:48. > :40:03.The line looks the same, has he pushed that little bit extra? I
:40:04. > :40:09.don't think so. Two chances. Is Robert looking at the positive bowl?
:40:10. > :40:14.Is he looking to take the jack through? As you say, Greg, a couple
:40:15. > :40:20.of chances, he complains of the bowl, get into the jack. He has a
:40:21. > :40:27.bowl at the back of the head to pick up a double. Cannot really go wrong.
:40:28. > :40:42.He would be very unlucky to go wrong. No, just playing the draw.
:40:43. > :40:52.Needs a big finish from there. It had a bit more weight than we
:40:53. > :41:18.thought, but it looks like one shot. 1-1 after two ends.
:41:19. > :41:39.The first time in the match, Rob has decided to give the forehand of
:41:40. > :41:50.role, see if he can get a better opening bowl. -- to give the
:41:51. > :41:59.forehand a roll. Jamie has led off this forehand in the whole game. We
:42:00. > :42:06.will be moving over to the red button. Unfortunately we have to
:42:07. > :42:07.leave you here on BBC Two. But hit the red button and you can enjoy the
:42:08. > :42:37.rest of this match. Just needs one player to hit their
:42:38. > :42:43.form here. Jamie is just getting the edge over Robert but he's not
:42:44. > :42:48.playing very consistent either. I think throughout the whole game
:42:49. > :43:01.roll's best all has been his third. Again, on this end, two loose-ish
:43:02. > :43:09.opening bowls. Looking to make the adjustment and draw the shot with
:43:10. > :43:10.his third bowl. A bit of disturbance, he's just taking a
:43:11. > :43:51.moment. Well, we are almost at the end of
:43:52. > :43:54.our coverage on BBC Two today as we make way for highlights of the
:43:55. > :43:57.Australian open tennis, but if you hit the red button you can see the
