0:00:34 > 0:00:40APPLAUSE
0:00:40 > 0:00:44hello, everyone. And welcome to Potters. It is the
0:00:44 > 0:00:48most important week in the sport of indoor bar and a chance for the best
0:00:48 > 0:00:51players in the world to get their hands on the most coveted of
0:00:51 > 0:00:53trophies. Today, it is the turn of the
0:00:53 > 0:00:59ladies... It is ladies finals day, and what a
0:00:59 > 0:01:04final we have in store! And East Anglia and Derby, two-time and
0:01:04 > 0:01:08defending champion Katherine Rednall from the Ipswich and district indoor
0:01:08 > 0:01:15club, and in her semifinal yesterday afternoon, she cruised to victory
0:01:15 > 0:01:19over Scotland's Lesley Doig. She will face a stern test from her
0:01:19 > 0:01:24great friend and rival, Rebecca Field. The Norwich bowler came
0:01:24 > 0:01:28through a tough semifinal against Janice Gower last night, now her
0:01:28 > 0:01:36sights firmly set on a second world title to add to her 2013 triumph.
0:01:36 > 0:01:41Following that, we are back to second round open singles action is
0:01:41 > 0:01:44another local hero, Greg Harlow, continues his bid for a second world
0:01:44 > 0:01:52title... Standing in his way, the very dangerous Scott Edwards, hoping
0:01:52 > 0:01:57to add to his ever-growing list of notable scalps.
0:01:57 > 0:01:57to add to his ever-growing list of notable scalps.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01We are starting today with news of the open singles and at the start of
0:02:01 > 0:02:06the day, we knew the identity of 5/4-finalists, with three matches to
0:02:06 > 0:02:13go. Greg Harlow in action later this afternoon, but the first Match Of
0:02:13 > 0:02:15The Day took place this morning between Les Gillett, the
0:02:15 > 0:02:21semifinalist last year, against 2016 runner-up, Robert Paxton.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25Here is what happen. The world singles title is missing
0:02:25 > 0:02:31from both of these player's Seabees. Robert Paxton's best was as
0:02:31 > 0:02:37runner-up in 2016. The lead changed hands five times in
0:02:37 > 0:02:40a topsy-turvy set. Paxton went into the final end with
0:02:40 > 0:02:45a slender advantage. It came down to the last bowl, arguably the shot of
0:02:45 > 0:02:50the tournament so far from Les Gillett. Snatching a single, tying
0:02:50 > 0:02:54the set 8-8. In round one, Paxton was pushed all
0:02:54 > 0:03:00the way by Daniel Salmon, overcoming the Welshman only in a tie-break.
0:03:00 > 0:03:05This proved as challenging. A good drive in the fourth end helping him
0:03:05 > 0:03:08into the lead. Les Gillett's first-round match was
0:03:08 > 0:03:13a more straightforward affair, seeing off Simon Skelton in two
0:03:13 > 0:03:15sets, but he kept the pressure on Paxton.
0:03:15 > 0:03:21He managed to stay within a shot. But Paxton took two shots at the
0:03:21 > 0:03:26next end and in the eighth, he played a nice draw for a match lie,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29which Les Gillett could do nothing about.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32The 39-year-old from Taunton is through to the quarterfinals and a
0:03:32 > 0:03:40match against Mervyn King. Well done to Robert Paxton. He is
0:03:40 > 0:03:45through. This is the top half of the open singles draw. Jason Greenslade
0:03:45 > 0:03:49plays Darren Burnett, in the first quarterfinal. Mark Dawes is against
0:03:49 > 0:03:53Mark Royal, and at the bottom we know at least one match in the
0:03:53 > 0:03:57quarterfinals of the bottom half of the draw, Mervyn King and Robert
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Paxton, still waiting on the bottom two matches.
0:04:00 > 0:04:01Former world champion
0:04:01 > 0:04:02two matches. Former world champion John prices
0:04:02 > 0:04:06alongside me. Now we know six of the quarterfinalists, you can tell us
0:04:06 > 0:04:13how strong the field is this year. It is a good field, Paul and Alex
0:04:13 > 0:04:17has gone out, but Darren Burnett, he is still in, there is high quality.
0:04:17 > 0:04:22Which player has impressed you the most?Overall, I think Mark Dawes,
0:04:22 > 0:04:29he's a very good player. He has a majority in his game, he plays very
0:04:29 > 0:04:33confidently, he owns the rink. His attitude seems to have changed more
0:04:33 > 0:04:39recently. He has a belief?Yes, getting into the 16, he has the
0:04:39 > 0:04:43respect of his opponents. He looks to be the man to beat. Are you
0:04:43 > 0:04:47picking him for the title?I don't want to put pressure on him but I
0:04:47 > 0:04:52fancy him!Thank you, John. Let's
0:04:52 > 0:04:53fancy him!Thank you, John. Let's concentrate on what is coming
0:04:53 > 0:04:59up. The first match this afternoon is the final of the ladies singles.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02It is between Katherine Rednall and Rebecca Field, both players know one
0:05:02 > 0:05:12another's games and personality very well.
0:05:17 > 0:05:23This is my seventh year now. I've come to treat it like, I suppose,
0:05:23 > 0:05:27both me and Catherine, we feel very comfortable here. We know the people
0:05:27 > 0:05:31who watch us, you see the same faces every year. It's a brilliant place
0:05:31 > 0:05:39to play bowls.I think it is just nice to get done first, then be
0:05:39 > 0:05:43waiting for your opponent, sitting in the player's box watching. I
0:05:43 > 0:05:48enjoyed the semifinals, chilling out and watching it.The draw was set
0:05:48 > 0:05:52up, Katherine was at the top and I was in the bottom half. I think it's
0:05:52 > 0:05:57a final that people are hoping to see and I hope we go out and do both
0:05:57 > 0:06:01of ourselves justice.I think the only bit I get nervous about is the
0:06:01 > 0:06:10walk on.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13walk on. I'm so clumsy, I worry I will fall over! But I take every
0:06:13 > 0:06:16game as it comes. You win, you win. You lose, you lose.We have been
0:06:16 > 0:06:19through a lot together. It is similar how we have come up through
0:06:19 > 0:06:21the ranks. In March, we have played on the internationals. We need to
0:06:21 > 0:06:25have made up by then! We are professionals, and it will be a nice
0:06:25 > 0:06:29and clean fight. We are professional, we have our game faces
0:06:29 > 0:06:33when we get on the green. Hopefully it will be a good quality match,
0:06:33 > 0:06:37they usually are when we play one another. We will get on their and
0:06:37 > 0:06:43play really good bowls and entertain the crowd.Katherine is dangerous,
0:06:43 > 0:06:48she really does the damage on the second bowl. We can both play the
0:06:48 > 0:06:53shots. We both probably have the best two draw is that have been here
0:06:53 > 0:07:01over the week. It could be exciting, there could be fireworks! Her first
0:07:01 > 0:07:07two bowls are the strongest part of her game. She doesn't let you in. I
0:07:07 > 0:07:11will have to be prepared for her to nail it with the first two, and make
0:07:11 > 0:07:16sure my first two are equally as good, if not better, than hers. My
0:07:16 > 0:07:20mum and grandma have been here for every game. They sit in the same
0:07:20 > 0:07:24seat in the stand every time. I know exactly where they are. My boyfriend
0:07:24 > 0:07:30was in the players box, he looked like nervous wreck! My mum watches
0:07:30 > 0:07:34from behind a curtain! She isn't very good. She loves coming but then
0:07:34 > 0:07:39she is hopeless! You always know when she is playing because Judith
0:07:39 > 0:07:43is sat behind the post in the player 's box! What's the point in coming
0:07:43 > 0:07:47if you aren't going to bother to watch it?It has been quite a year,
0:07:47 > 0:07:53without saying too much.It has been quite a disappointing year. There
0:07:53 > 0:07:58have been ups and downs. I feel like now I am coming out of it stronger.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02I am looking forward to the match, I hope I play well. May the best lady
0:08:02 > 0:08:09win!
0:08:12 > 0:08:13Very funny listening
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Very funny listening to the two of them chatting away before the final
0:08:15 > 0:08:21today. The crowd listening to every word. Two highly decorated players.
0:08:21 > 0:08:26Katherine Rednall, just 22 years old, going for her third title. She
0:08:26 > 0:08:31won last year and in 2014. Her opponent, Rebecca Field, just
0:08:31 > 0:08:37six years older, the winner of this title in 2013. She and Katherine
0:08:37 > 0:08:44fought out the final in 2014. Katherine came out on top.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48Alongside me, let me welcome Sian, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist,
0:08:48 > 0:08:52it's great to have you with me today. These are two players you
0:08:52 > 0:08:56know well. And two players who know one another very well. Our positive
0:08:56 > 0:09:02or negative is that today? They do know one another's strengths and
0:09:02 > 0:09:07weaknesses. They are friends and colleagues. There are not many
0:09:07 > 0:09:10negatives. They will not be worried that they are friends, they will
0:09:10 > 0:09:16both want to win. That will be forgotten. They both spoke about the
0:09:16 > 0:09:20other starting, with the first two bowls, they both said that it was
0:09:20 > 0:09:27important to better that. How key is that for a victory this afternoon?
0:09:27 > 0:09:32They have both carved their careers through being specialists. Their
0:09:32 > 0:09:36first two bowls are excellent. It's about who settles the quickest but
0:09:36 > 0:09:40also shot selection is essential in this match. It is which has the edge
0:09:40 > 0:09:45at the right time. They should both be extremely comfortable on this
0:09:45 > 0:09:50rink in the final. They know it so well. They are both former winners
0:09:50 > 0:09:55and finalists, they are both at ease. Rebecca said yesterday after
0:09:55 > 0:10:00her game how comfortable she felt. Katherine has an air of
0:10:00 > 0:10:06compatibility about her anyway. They are both excited.Who Do You Think
0:10:06 > 0:10:13You Are come out on top?My 50p is going to be on Katherine Rednall
0:10:13 > 0:10:18today!Is that all we are paying you? Let's go over and join our MC
0:10:18 > 0:10:23for the afternoon...
0:10:23 > 0:10:24for the afternoon...Thank you, Rishi
0:10:24 > 0:10:26for the afternoon...Thank you, Rishi. Welcome to the international
0:10:26 > 0:10:31arena at Potters Resort, the atmosphere is absolutely electric.
0:10:31 > 0:10:36You could say, ladies and gentlemen, you could say that we are feeling in
0:10:36 > 0:10:41the pink! Let's get the ladies on the rent! Making her fourth
0:10:41 > 0:10:47appearance in this final, a young lady who has proven what a
0:10:47 > 0:10:55formidable opponent she can be -- the ladies on the rink. It's the
0:10:55 > 0:10:59former World Matchplay champion, Rebecca Field!
0:10:59 > 0:11:09CHEERING APPLAUSE
0:11:15 > 0:11:22MUSIC: "Firework" - Katy Perryit is hard to believe that this young
0:11:22 > 0:11:2522-year-old made her debut appearance four years ago and then
0:11:25 > 0:11:29went on to win this very event. Defending her title for the second
0:11:29 > 0:11:33time in her career, the ladies World Matchplay champion, the pocket
0:11:33 > 0:11:43dynamo, Katherine Rednall!
0:11:47 > 0:11:54MUSIC: "Mr Brightside" - The Killers COMMENTATOR: A great atmosphere in
0:11:54 > 0:11:57the auditorium, don't forget if you want to contact the team with any
0:11:57 > 0:12:02questions or tell us who you think will win today, tweet is using the
0:12:02 > 0:12:05hashtag BBC bowls. Sian is in the commentary box with
0:12:05 > 0:12:12our main man, David Colquhoun. COMMENTATOR: An easy walk, no need
0:12:12 > 0:12:21to scramble up here. There is plenty of time.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24The players are always hidden away whenever the interviews are going
0:12:24 > 0:12:29on.
0:12:29 > 0:12:35on.I didn't want them to hear who my 50p was on! Not ideal!Indeed.
0:12:35 > 0:12:41But it has to be a good call, based on the fact of how Catherine has
0:12:41 > 0:12:51played so far.She has been so comfortable. So consistent. That is
0:12:51 > 0:13:05what I based it on, really. A great start again.
0:13:07 > 0:13:14The single extended to 11 ends, in the tie-break.
0:13:14 > 0:13:18the tie-break. The shot clock is in action. 30 seconds to deliver the
0:13:18 > 0:13:22ball.
0:13:33 > 0:13:39Forehand and backhand.
0:13:53 > 0:14:01Two red.
0:14:12 > 0:14:19Another useful bowl.I'm not surprised to see Rebecca, I would
0:14:19 > 0:14:23expect it to take her a couple of ends to settle down today. I do
0:14:23 > 0:14:26think there's more pressure on Rebecca Field, although Katherine is
0:14:26 > 0:14:31defending champion. She will just have to take a little while to
0:14:31 > 0:14:39settle into her stride. That is a good bowl. The problem is, there is
0:14:39 > 0:14:43no back position, meaning she cannot attack the head, unless she is
0:14:43 > 0:14:52prepared to take a risk to go with it.
0:14:52 > 0:14:57it. Whereas Katherine can drill away at this. The back position is
0:14:57 > 0:15:02covered...
0:15:11 > 0:15:19It is another one. A very impressive start. That was great from
0:15:19 > 0:15:27Katherine, tucked away nicely.I'm not sure if it is counting but it is
0:15:27 > 0:15:35another bowl in the area. If Rebecca Field, well, she just drops out, but
0:15:35 > 0:15:39if she wants to attack this, she will have to be careful of her own
0:15:39 > 0:15:50bowl.She goes quickly down the forehand. Ooh, a great bowl.Coming
0:15:50 > 0:15:56through and making sure she is with it. She plays beautifully. That if
0:15:56 > 0:16:04they get out of jail sharp! Absolutely, she plays it perfectly.
0:16:04 > 0:16:11She has to get to the jack and pick up one, it was a great bowl. She got
0:16:11 > 0:16:20herself out of trouble, certainly! Got the connection from the Red
0:16:20 > 0:16:25Bull, she pushed it on. Getting to the re-spot, she would have been two
0:16:25 > 0:16:31or three down.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35or three down. Rebecca Field, very capable of playing and attacking
0:16:35 > 0:16:45shot.
0:16:57 > 0:17:03A good opening bowl from Rebecca Field. She will want to put
0:17:03 > 0:17:06Katherine under as much pressure as she can come as early as she
0:17:06 > 0:17:16possibly can.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43Keeping this standard going, and we are in for an absolutely cracking
0:17:43 > 0:17:53game!
0:18:14 > 0:18:25A change onto the forehand.
0:18:28 > 0:18:32She forces Katherine to playing weight, you would expect that. She
0:18:32 > 0:18:37is close to the tow, she could get down...What a result! My goodness
0:18:37 > 0:18:49me. Court goes the green. -- out goes the green. Mum and grainy, they
0:18:49 > 0:18:57are always in the same seat.A wry smile there from the boyfriend.
0:19:12 > 0:19:18Rebecca, down to the draw shot to pull the jack back. Difficult when
0:19:18 > 0:19:25you put on the extra weight. Slightly overplayed here. But a good
0:19:25 > 0:19:30effort.The running ball from Katherine, well, she just about had
0:19:30 > 0:19:36the edge. An incredible result. No doubt about it, she was in the area.
0:19:36 > 0:19:42But a maximum result to be holding one at the end of it. And a chance
0:19:42 > 0:19:53to add another. Plenty of room, as well.
0:19:56 > 0:20:08She is trying hard with this. Perfect. Her two or three shots were
0:20:08 > 0:20:13taken away.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20taken away.It shows what a versatile player Katherine Rednall
0:20:20 > 0:20:28is. She has showed her range, with only two bowls.
0:20:38 > 0:20:48Jack length, 28 metres.
0:21:06 > 0:21:13This game has quality written all over it!Both are such good players.
0:21:13 > 0:21:19That is their real strength.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22That is their real strength.An international standard, it's what
0:21:22 > 0:21:29you get when you play with them in the international arena.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57That is Wayne, the fiancee of Rebecca Field. Waiting to play his
0:21:57 > 0:22:03match. He is on the show later this evening, when he takes on Stewart
0:22:03 > 0:22:09Anderson. That's always the danger of playing the running bowl, when
0:22:09 > 0:22:14you have one and the head, the chance of taking your own out.She
0:22:14 > 0:22:19chose to go early. She chose quite a lot of weight for the shot. Now she
0:22:19 > 0:22:28is left in a position where she has two attack again.
0:22:28 > 0:22:32two attack again. We see Katherine Rednall going a little deeper this
0:22:32 > 0:22:38time... Anything behind jack is good.
0:22:55 > 0:22:59Close this time... Yes. The trouble with going again, it's always going
0:22:59 > 0:23:03to be an issue, but the back position was really good. By taking
0:23:03 > 0:23:10one out, she leaves the other one. And a huge amount of room for
0:23:10 > 0:23:14Katherine to keep piling them in. That is where the issue is. It will
0:23:14 > 0:23:18be a draw that is required, I cannot see her going for the single bold
0:23:18 > 0:23:27target. -- bold target. Katherine wants to score, but she doesn't want
0:23:27 > 0:23:38to provide a shoulder. She wants to make sure that her ball is online.
0:23:44 > 0:23:49Well, that has got to be tempting. You are so close, it must be
0:23:49 > 0:23:53tempting to go again. Damage limitation, the best you can do on
0:23:53 > 0:23:58the draw is a third shot. You may as well go again and take one out.She
0:23:58 > 0:24:04will be looking to take one, if not two come out. The best position she
0:24:04 > 0:24:09could be in, one down.Going for the draw... This would be very
0:24:09 > 0:24:17impressive.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20impressive. I'm not sure about that shot selection. I don't even know if
0:24:20 > 0:24:26she has made the third shot. Why not just drive again? With Katherine's
0:24:26 > 0:24:30last bowl, it would have looked tempting to drive again. More of a
0:24:30 > 0:24:37target than what was there previously.
0:24:37 > 0:24:41previously.The bowl on the jack. She was capable of scoring. She had
0:24:41 > 0:24:51options.
0:24:51 > 0:25:03options.5-1 after three ends.
0:25:15 > 0:25:24Macroone, 28 metres.
0:25:29 > 0:25:39Long jack Lowden. Comfortable there. Rebecca Field will have to start
0:25:39 > 0:25:47making the first two battle hers. It is about winning that one.
0:26:16 > 0:26:30She has dropped straight in. From the first, she was bang, bang, bang.
0:26:55 > 0:27:04Just tucking in behind the jack this time. Making another double...
0:27:10 > 0:27:18This doesn't look good. She has lost her way in the centre. She needs to
0:27:18 > 0:27:26settle down and get back to drawing. That is what she does best.
0:27:26 > 0:27:33That is what she does best.Looking at a third one here.
0:27:57 > 0:28:03Dropped out, it may have made the fourth. One ball very close. You
0:28:03 > 0:28:09would expect Rebecca Field to draw this.
0:28:09 > 0:28:15this. It would be a very loose forward to lose.I would expect
0:28:15 > 0:28:22Rebecca to redraw the shot. But she does not like this one...If that is
0:28:22 > 0:28:29the case, she may be worried about an over correction.
0:28:29 > 0:28:31an over correction.She has overplayed it...She has taken the
0:28:31 > 0:28:39front out. She may save the other. It is still three. We favoured
0:28:39 > 0:28:46three. I think they will probably measure it, though.I would have
0:28:46 > 0:28:54expected her to get in there.Yes, she knew that it was heavy. It's a
0:28:54 > 0:28:58good sign but when you let one go like that and you are four feed
0:28:58 > 0:29:03through and you thought you were close to the jack, that is a
0:29:03 > 0:29:11concern. Two out, a measure for the third. Early days in this set. But
0:29:11 > 0:29:18the gap is, well, rapidly it is getting very big. You don't want the
0:29:18 > 0:29:27player to get away by more than a few shots.
0:29:28 > 0:29:35Katherine anxious to get on with it.
0:29:42 > 0:29:50REFEREE:Three shots, Katherine Rednall.
0:29:50 > 0:29:54It's not that she's playing badly but Katherine is taking her
0:29:54 > 0:30:00opportunities to capitalise when she is holding. She's had a couple of
0:30:00 > 0:30:04nice ends and when you have loose ends at this level you will be
0:30:04 > 0:30:12punished and if you're opponent scores in multiples it is a problem.
0:30:12 > 0:30:17There is plenty of evidence to go but Katherine Rednall may feel this
0:30:17 > 0:30:27is a bit of an uphill battle and this next end is key.
0:30:48 > 0:30:54Much better start from Rebecca Field.
0:31:14 > 0:31:23REFEREE:One green.
0:31:26 > 0:31:33This is definitely more like it now, first ball in, the second just
0:31:33 > 0:31:38drifting round behind. That's always very useful.It just gives her
0:31:38 > 0:31:49options for later in the end if she needs them.
0:31:53 > 0:32:04Good from Katherine, just playing up to it.Just as the ball comes in it
0:32:04 > 0:32:08touches the jack, it will be sprayed with chalk and that means it is
0:32:08 > 0:32:15touching. Goes into the ditch and stays live. That's what the spray
0:32:15 > 0:32:20chalk is for. If the ball goes into the ditch without touching them it's
0:32:20 > 0:32:29taken away. All of the bowlers know that but we have a large audience of
0:32:29 > 0:32:34non-bowlers.
0:32:34 > 0:32:46There we go, tweet using #BBC Bowls. Questions will be received, looked
0:32:46 > 0:32:51at and if we can answer that we will surely drive.
0:32:51 > 0:33:01Please don't make them too complicated.
0:33:30 > 0:33:35Great effort from Rebecca Field trying to turn the Red Bull onto the
0:33:35 > 0:33:49jack. Gets the single. -- the red ball.
0:34:25 > 0:34:29APPLAUSE
0:34:29 > 0:34:43Once again, her first ball getting in.
0:35:30 > 0:35:36This has happened a few times during this match already. The first two
0:35:36 > 0:35:40balls of Rebecca Field have gone a bit wayward.She just hasn't got
0:35:40 > 0:35:44into any sort of rhythm yet.No, there has been flashes of it on some
0:35:44 > 0:35:51occasions.You're right, but nothing consistent. The trouble is playing
0:35:51 > 0:35:59her third bowl she will be in a heap of trouble. Here it comes. Tempted
0:35:59 > 0:36:09to run down on the forehand at this and try and make a disturbance.
0:36:13 > 0:36:20Just drawing in, a lot closer, has a chance on the second bowl. Just
0:36:20 > 0:36:24sliding off.I think she will be keen to keep drawing to try and hit
0:36:24 > 0:36:30her stride. She knows she's got to do something in the second set. She
0:36:30 > 0:36:32will want to just get into her groove as quickly as she possibly
0:36:32 > 0:36:44can.Still time to go, only on the sixth end
0:36:44 > 0:36:55sixth end of 11. Two sets. On the pull of the jack Rebecca Field can
0:36:56 > 0:37:04pick up a couple. Extra time out, of course,
0:37:04 > 0:37:09course, given for 11 end finals. Katherine is a very quick player.
0:37:09 > 0:37:13She sees danger, she is going deep, she thinks Rebecca will be playing
0:37:13 > 0:37:23into this. The crowd realise that too. Good odds to play into this.
0:37:23 > 0:37:29Yeah, she has the option of the bowl, the jack is what she wants but
0:37:29 > 0:37:37there is a couple of different opportunities.
0:37:40 > 0:37:48She doesn't like it, David.She didn't push through it, that's the
0:37:48 > 0:37:58problem. Oh dear. You can hear the crowd murmuring at that. The old
0:37:58 > 0:38:02adage is, you can't get anything if your Mac and not up.She shouldn't
0:38:02 > 0:38:07have been short at that, even if she was drawing she should have made
0:38:07 > 0:38:11sure she was positive she had the chances there. This set is going
0:38:11 > 0:38:20away now, third three, 12-1, a couple more ends and there will be
0:38:20 > 0:38:26no return.
0:38:32 > 0:38:38There is only one thing for Rebecca Field now, and that is to try and
0:38:38 > 0:38:44extend this set for as long as humanly possible, just try and get a
0:38:44 > 0:38:50couple of shots, try and force it down to the last two ends. The
0:38:50 > 0:38:53longer she is out there there is more chance of her working her way
0:38:53 > 0:39:00into the match. But Katherine is not letting up and to be fair she is
0:39:00 > 0:39:05getting a bit of a free run at the moment. She is but she is playing
0:39:05 > 0:39:10very well. She looks very comfortable out there. It's easy, I
0:39:10 > 0:39:15suppose, when you are just adding them in but she is still doing it.
0:39:16 > 0:39:22APPLAUSE
0:39:36 > 0:39:42Look at this, one all on the front of the Jack and the next one a
0:39:42 > 0:39:51couple of inches behind, 18, 20 inches. Julie Potter in pink today.
0:39:51 > 0:39:59Always very colourful, is Judy.
0:40:04 > 0:40:12And of course Sian in her usual seat.No one would dare get in
0:40:12 > 0:40:23there.Not a chance of sitting on that one.
0:40:34 > 0:40:42Everything in a line, it's not easy. But again there is that drop short
0:40:42 > 0:40:49haul. It is a bit of a struggle, to say the least. There is one green
0:40:49 > 0:40:53one in there but the other two are wayward. She's just scratching
0:40:53 > 0:40:58around and she can't find her way. She had to attack on the first end
0:40:58 > 0:41:02of the set, saved herself, and since then she has not been able to string
0:41:02 > 0:41:08a few together. That's what she needs, she just needs a couple of
0:41:08 > 0:41:15good ends and to settle down. And then it comes, doesn't it?Well, it
0:41:15 > 0:41:20does, and for Katherine she is just blasting away there, taking every
0:41:20 > 0:41:24single opportunity she can. She will come off that green. That has opened
0:41:24 > 0:41:30things in terms of a target. She really needed to get past it. So, if
0:41:30 > 0:41:35I was Rebecca Field here I would play a running bowl at this just to
0:41:35 > 0:41:40try and open things up. There is a back green bowl that might be very
0:41:40 > 0:41:45useful.She's got to. She might want to release a bit of frustration as
0:41:45 > 0:41:50well, it might do her good.Release the tension.Get rid of it.She's
0:41:50 > 0:41:58gone for back and draw within two inches.I think that's surprising
0:41:58 > 0:42:02considering how her drawing has been so far.I would have pushed right
0:42:02 > 0:42:08through that just to...I think I would have got my arm going on that
0:42:08 > 0:42:13one. Get it out of my system. She's probably thinking to herself, I will
0:42:13 > 0:42:17just draw this and try and find good weight but sometimes it's just not
0:42:17 > 0:42:26the right shot and the run continues with.
0:42:26 > 0:42:30the right shot and the run continues If you are Rebecca Field supporter
0:42:30 > 0:42:37that scoreline looks pretty frightening.
0:42:58 > 0:43:03That was loose from Katherine. She missed the chance to get close to
0:43:03 > 0:43:07the first ball so now it's time for Rebecca to try and take advantage of
0:43:07 > 0:43:16that. This certainly looks better. That is an encouraging clap, I
0:43:16 > 0:43:21think. I think the crowd want Rebecca to pull up and this to be a
0:43:21 > 0:43:26bit of a battle.At the moment it's very one sided, always disappointing
0:43:26 > 0:43:34in the final.
0:43:52 > 0:43:58The ball dropped but it didn't make any difference.
0:44:10 > 0:44:12Too many opportunities.
0:44:12 > 0:44:19APPLAUSE
0:44:32 > 0:44:40This is better. There you go. INAUDIBLE
0:44:40 > 0:44:49The crowd appreciated as well.They don't want a one-sided final.
0:44:49 > 0:44:56Katherine is well aware of the fact that if she scored one on this end
0:44:56 > 0:45:03the set was over.Yeah, she switched over.
0:45:09 > 0:45:14She's not too far away, just on the outside.Very good for the draw.
0:45:14 > 0:45:20Good weight.
0:45:20 > 0:45:23Good weight. And another rolling into the ninth end.
0:45:32 > 0:45:42Short bowls.
0:45:43 > 0:45:49Well, there is no doubt about the fact that the set's gun, without a
0:45:49 > 0:45:57shadow of a doubt, it has gone. -- the set has gone.Katherine will not
0:45:57 > 0:46:01allow Rebecca to score three counts the way she's playing.Three counts
0:46:01 > 0:46:08of four, she is not.No.
0:46:11 > 0:46:18of four, she is not.No.It ends two singles, and it's just not enough.
0:46:18 > 0:46:22Splattering of the odd two or three in there, you would say there are
0:46:22 > 0:46:27indications that she can push through into the second set, but at
0:46:27 > 0:46:36the moment there is nothing to say it will be any better.Sometimes
0:46:36 > 0:46:39psychologically when you start the second something shifts, especially
0:46:39 > 0:46:42if you've been beaten quite comfortable in the first set. It's
0:46:42 > 0:46:47quite nice to get that set out of the way, and it has gone and you can
0:46:47 > 0:46:55start afresh. I hope that is what will happen here. That is the joy of
0:46:55 > 0:47:00the set system, you can get away with that, go down 13-2, 14-2,
0:47:00 > 0:47:05whatever the case may be an start off 0-0 and if you win that set you
0:47:05 > 0:47:15are in a tie-break, it's not accumulated shots.You can win by a
0:47:15 > 0:47:19high margin, or just squeak the set and go on to win, that's the great
0:47:19 > 0:47:35thing about sets. The wrong side of it. It had the weight, though.
0:47:47 > 0:47:59Just wanted to get close to the jack.
0:47:59 > 0:48:10First set is going to be over this end.
0:48:35 > 0:48:44Not good enough, too many short bowls.
0:48:44 > 0:49:01Time to move on. 13-3, no need for the last two ends, and the Rednall
0:49:01 > 0:49:10camp will be very happy at the moment.Only halfway there. She had
0:49:10 > 0:49:15a little look up. She did, that's unusual for her. She's normally very
0:49:15 > 0:49:21focused on things. There is a big screen on the arena and it's shown
0:49:21 > 0:49:28on the screen.
0:49:48 > 0:49:50APPLAUSE
0:49:50 > 0:49:56Very good end from Katherine after a poor start from Rebecca in the
0:49:56 > 0:50:02second set.This needs to be better.
0:50:44 > 0:50:55Rebecca switching over here, badly needed. Two loose bowls. She will be
0:50:55 > 0:51:00happy to get that one in there. She wants to get off and running in
0:51:00 > 0:51:07this, doesn't want to be losing counts. Katherine Rednall close with
0:51:07 > 0:51:13this one. Very close. Very good bowl from Katherine Rednall. Not letting
0:51:13 > 0:51:20up on things.
0:51:34 > 0:51:38Just on the high side. I didn't mind the weight so much because there was
0:51:38 > 0:51:45always a chance with that weight. Now, Katherine could be trying to
0:51:45 > 0:51:49draw another and if she touches the jack she could make three, and that
0:51:49 > 0:51:55would really hurt. It's very close here, could break well for
0:51:55 > 0:52:00Katherine, great bowling. Not an easy two to make but my goodness me
0:52:00 > 0:52:05she made it look easy. She's in total control out there at the
0:52:05 > 0:52:11moment. She's very comfortable, she is playing very well. Rebecca had a
0:52:11 > 0:52:21little sneak them, and she batted her back away.
0:52:21 > 0:52:27her back away.Absolutely. Wonderful arena at the Potters Leisure Resort.
0:52:27 > 0:52:37Always get good crowds.
0:52:48 > 0:52:50APPLAUSE
0:52:50 > 0:52:59Once again another good start.
0:53:00 > 0:53:07Generally speaking, the women players will use slightly smaller
0:53:07 > 0:53:14bowls, not everyone does. Good reply from Rebecca. Quite often they are
0:53:14 > 0:53:21using a size two or a size three. We do get some of the players using
0:53:21 > 0:53:2684-macro, very rarely a five.I think it is rare for to play with
0:53:26 > 0:53:32anything above a four. -- players using a four.The men would
0:53:32 > 0:53:38generally use a size four. It goes all the way down to zero for small
0:53:38 > 0:53:48hands. The manufacturers are all the same, the biases are the same that
0:53:48 > 0:53:56are available for men and women and the grips as well.
0:53:56 > 0:54:03Of course, when they come here there is a lot of pool bowls available, as
0:54:03 > 0:54:08we call them, 30 or 40 sets of those and people can choose which to use.
0:54:08 > 0:54:14But the top players have their own. Just dropped out. They would often
0:54:14 > 0:54:22have two sets, the green and the red provided by sponsors.Of course, the
0:54:22 > 0:54:25general rule is people should play with the biggest bowl that they can
0:54:25 > 0:54:33comfortably throw. That was always the advice.It was, I think it's old
0:54:33 > 0:54:37advice now. Look at this ball going down now about four feet short.Used
0:54:37 > 0:54:41to be the case the smaller bowls would swing all over the shop but
0:54:41 > 0:54:49that's not the case now either.
0:54:58 > 0:55:02That question was posed by William Jones, who I think described the
0:55:02 > 0:55:07bowls as Woods, that's a different story altogether, a reference back
0:55:07 > 0:55:16to the old days. How she got it through to her own? Yes, she has.
0:55:16 > 0:55:25Great bowl. She got it very close to the jack. There is a good shot
0:55:25 > 0:55:41there. Bowl to bowl, one or two, depending on the contact made.
0:55:42 > 0:55:48Down on the forehand. It is hard to pick a line out on this particular
0:55:48 > 0:55:54shot. I was just thinking she could get that one into it. That would
0:55:54 > 0:56:05have been fortunate but Katherine Rednall yet again gets in.
0:57:27 > 0:57:35APPLAUSE
0:57:36 > 0:57:51The gap on the last bowl? REFEREE: The gap on the last bowl, 14 inches.
0:57:53 > 0:58:01This is better from Rebecca.Got a chance with it.Needs to hurry. Yes,
0:58:01 > 0:58:14very good. It's almost painful coming in, that one.It was. Some
0:58:14 > 0:58:29movement there as well. It will settle for one shot.
0:58:29 > 0:58:33settle for one shot. On the forehand looking for the deep red ball, drop
0:58:33 > 0:58:40off it and make it two.
0:58:44 > 0:58:51Good weight. Just try and stay away from the jack a little bit, just
0:58:51 > 0:58:57overplayed the line.
0:58:57 > 0:59:00overplayed the line. Katherine, she is enjoying this. If she touches the
0:59:00 > 0:59:04jack she will make a double. People say about scoring twos and threes,
0:59:04 > 0:59:13we refer to them as doubles and The
0:59:15 > 0:59:23we refer to them as doubles and The. -- doubles and trebles. At the
0:59:23 > 0:59:26international level that is just what we do.
0:59:26 > 0:59:37APPLAUSE It is already bowls. Look at the two
0:59:37 > 0:59:41at the bottom of your picture, that will make life very difficult -- it
0:59:41 > 0:59:47is all red bowls. I don't see much on four Rebecca Field here. Just try
0:59:47 > 0:59:55and draw up to it.
0:59:55 > 0:59:58It is another end where Rebecca Field doesn't have any back
0:59:58 > 1:00:06position. Her choices are so limited. It wasn't too bad, to be
1:00:06 > 1:00:13honest with you. Narrowing it a shade... Had to be the perfect draw.
1:00:13 > 1:00:23Once again, she pops it in, Katherine Rednall.
1:00:40 > 1:00:46Jack length, 28 metres.
1:01:21 > 1:01:28A short ball again, isn't it?That has been the default with the first
1:01:28 > 1:01:32two, from Rebecca. It makes life so much harder for herself. That is the
1:01:32 > 1:01:47problem. Katherine is just punishing her, at the moment.
1:01:54 > 1:02:00Turned her back on it again. She really is struggling. It is hard to
1:02:00 > 1:02:06watch, this. Because she is so much better, we all know that. In the
1:02:06 > 1:02:10meantime, Katherine Rednall is getting a free run. She is doing
1:02:10 > 1:02:15exactly what she has to do to take advantage. You cannot give Katherine
1:02:15 > 1:02:20Rednall a free run. As simple as that. That was always the danger.
1:02:20 > 1:02:25She is playing so well in all of these matches. She is very
1:02:25 > 1:02:31confident, very relaxed out there. Rebecca will have known that she
1:02:31 > 1:02:38needed to get up there for the first two in particular.
1:03:22 > 1:03:26Really, really good stuff from Katherine Rednall. She finds the
1:03:26 > 1:03:34line as well. Just acknowledging that level of skill.
1:03:34 > 1:03:37that level of skill. Short-term retentive memory online and weight.
1:03:37 > 1:03:46It is very much with the 22-year-old.
1:03:46 > 1:03:51Really, Rebecca is left in so much trouble, in the end. And over
1:03:51 > 1:03:58correction... Understandable.It isn't easy to do a shot there with
1:03:58 > 1:04:12four down. Katherine makes it look so easy, at the moment.
1:04:12 > 1:04:15so easy, at the moment.Katherine Rednall's camp, very happy at the
1:04:15 > 1:04:24moment.Working out how many ends they have to go.It is difficult,
1:04:24 > 1:04:28not good to see but you have to appreciate that it is an exhibition
1:04:28 > 1:04:42on one side. Rebecca Field, at the moment, has no answer.
1:05:03 > 1:05:11Great work for Rebecca Field.
1:05:18 > 1:05:24It gives her a good starting point now. Can play either side. Making
1:05:24 > 1:05:29the double.
1:05:41 > 1:05:47Got a chance with this. A little touch on it. That is remarkable,
1:05:47 > 1:05:57really. That is what we expect from Rebecca Field, two balls like that.
1:05:57 > 1:06:02She is a very accomplished player, she has a really strong record. We
1:06:02 > 1:06:09know that she can bowl like this. She has a chance here. Forcing
1:06:09 > 1:06:13Katherine into a running ball. She has missed. Moving to the other
1:06:13 > 1:06:18side. Staying away from the jack. Trying to go deep, expecting
1:06:18 > 1:06:29Katherine to get it. A jack on the corner would be good...
1:06:29 > 1:06:39corner would be good...Outstanding! Absolutely.
1:06:39 > 1:06:56Looks under... Four shots coming up.
1:07:12 > 1:07:23Now, Rebecca, no mistakes... Four shots, look at those four shots.
1:07:23 > 1:07:30CHEERING , APPLAUSE
1:07:30 > 1:07:38She never put her under pressure in the entire match.
1:07:38 > 1:07:41the entire match. She forced Katherine into plain two weighted
1:07:41 > 1:07:46balls, she did so quickly. Both with each of them. See what happens
1:07:46 > 1:07:56now...
1:08:22 > 1:08:28A very good opener.
1:09:22 > 1:09:29Katherine Rednall, doing just enough to get the shot...
1:09:57 > 1:10:04The danger of the short balls again...
1:10:04 > 1:10:10again...They are like a horrible magnet, sometimes.Rebecca Field
1:10:10 > 1:10:16really needs to draw this, after picking up four. To get the impact
1:10:16 > 1:10:22of the full house by picking up a single at the next end. Need to
1:10:22 > 1:10:29hurry with this, though. A little lazy looking.
1:10:29 > 1:10:37lazy looking. That is a shame. She would be very disappointed with
1:10:37 > 1:10:44that, after the last end and roaring so well. -- drawing. Katherine has a
1:10:44 > 1:10:54chance here.
1:10:55 > 1:11:0110-4, 8-5, it is a big difference. And it lessens the impact of the
1:11:01 > 1:11:09four at the previous end. That is very good. Well done,
1:11:09 > 1:11:18Katherine Rednall. She almost looks a little fazed for the first time,
1:11:18 > 1:11:23in the last end, when she was forced into playing those running goals.
1:11:23 > 1:11:29But she has settled back down, now. Of
1:11:29 > 1:11:34Of course, Rebecca Field has to win the set. Even coming down to draw
1:11:34 > 1:11:45it, that would not be sufficient.
1:11:51 > 1:12:02Jack length, 28 metres.
1:12:10 > 1:12:20Normal service resumed.
1:12:53 > 1:12:56I think she knew it was slightly through the head. From her body
1:12:56 > 1:13:03language. The backhand will be hard to get the shot, that has to be a
1:13:03 > 1:13:12perfect draw.
1:13:12 > 1:13:19perfect draw. Closer with this one. She has played the perfect draw. An
1:13:19 > 1:13:29absolutely perfect draw.
1:13:35 > 1:13:42Katherine prepared to a ripe with this. Pushing the jack into it...
1:13:42 > 1:13:47That was perfect for it. She could even afford to play it with slightly
1:13:47 > 1:13:57more. She has the position to. Absolutely.
1:13:57 > 1:14:01Absolutely. Rebecca Field has always played a very good ball. That is
1:14:01 > 1:14:06clever. I'm not sure if she meant it to be there. She would try and draw
1:14:06 > 1:14:13the jack. She needs shots. It is a good receiving position. But
1:14:13 > 1:14:17actually, Katherine Rednall has control of the end. In terms of how
1:14:17 > 1:14:24the head lies. Even though she is one shot down.
1:14:24 > 1:14:26one shot down. She looks for something similar. So close on the
1:14:26 > 1:14:40third.Know, something is wrong.
1:15:00 > 1:15:05This is all about making the scoreline look respectable, now.
1:15:05 > 1:15:10Trying to get another two or three shots on the card. She needs to
1:15:10 > 1:15:20score more than one, one is OK but it will not get her back in.
1:15:20 > 1:15:24it will not get her back in.Her fourth single of this match... 16
1:15:24 > 1:15:29ends with 14-mac.
1:15:34 > 1:15:41ends with 14-mac. -- with one four. I would have thought she went to do
1:15:41 > 1:15:47something different to shake it up a little bit.Not an awful lot
1:15:47 > 1:15:56different to what we have been playing.No.
1:16:25 > 1:16:30You can see Katherine Rednall, anything over 27 metres and she
1:16:30 > 1:16:35scores heavily.A huge difference in percentage.Massive, if anything,
1:16:35 > 1:16:40Rebecca Field should be going down to 23 or 24 metres to compete there.
1:16:40 > 1:16:45She matched her at 23-25. You would have thought that is where she
1:16:45 > 1:16:57should be putting it. Better here.
1:17:13 > 1:17:21A chance to get one right in again. Still getting the ball away nice and
1:17:21 > 1:17:34smooth. Tension has not affected her delivery. Needs to hurry, though. A
1:17:34 > 1:17:41little bit of the old yard-itis, as we call it in the bowls world.
1:17:41 > 1:17:51Getting stuck in that yard shot. Too often. She isn't putting pressure on
1:17:51 > 1:17:57Katherine in the same way that Katherine is doing to her. A perfect
1:17:57 > 1:18:03touch.
1:18:03 > 1:18:06touch. You cannot leave Katherine with that amount of room. She is not
1:18:06 > 1:18:13going to keep missing. She is too good, especially in this form. She
1:18:13 > 1:18:19has hit the ground running in this game.
1:18:39 > 1:18:46Oh, dear. It is tension, isn't it? Pressure and tension. That is all it
1:18:46 > 1:18:52is. That kind of bowlers out of character. Not flowing through the
1:18:52 > 1:18:59bowler and releasing it properly. It is very hard, to see a player at
1:18:59 > 1:19:10this standard, suffering a bit like this.
1:19:15 > 1:19:18She put the shot ball on the forehand. Now she has followed it
1:19:18 > 1:19:31up.So good.Stern stuff, she will be shaking hands very soon.
1:19:39 > 1:19:54Potentially 12 shots there. Two shots for Katherine Rednall.
1:20:03 > 1:20:08Jack length, 28 metres.
1:21:02 > 1:21:07That level of consistency has been scary at times. But even when she is
1:21:07 > 1:21:14not close to the jack, there are one or two bowls within a foot or so.
1:21:14 > 1:21:16With the opposition scratching around, they are in deep trouble by
1:21:16 > 1:21:23the time they get to the third ball.
1:21:44 > 1:21:54Another one in there. Rebecca, true to form, trying to stick to the
1:21:54 > 1:22:06draw.I think that she has played it with some conviction, though. A good
1:22:06 > 1:22:17enough shot.Responding to that ball with a cheer.
1:22:24 > 1:22:29Katherine has four time-outs remaining.Hasn't had to worry too
1:22:29 > 1:22:36much about time-outs. Get to the green ball, or turn the jack around
1:22:36 > 1:22:42for two.
1:22:42 > 1:22:50for two. Motoring along in this game.Very quick so far. Very close,
1:22:50 > 1:22:59Katherine... Well played, Katherine. A good shot, very close. The green
1:22:59 > 1:23:09ball did fall back.
1:23:16 > 1:23:23If that is the shot, this will be over...Rebecca needing two to carry
1:23:23 > 1:23:28on the set.
1:23:28 > 1:23:32on the set.She is looking at it but to be truthful, there is so little
1:23:32 > 1:23:41available. It has been a tough day. But played well to get here.Yes.It
1:23:41 > 1:23:45hasn't worked out but if it is one red, just waiting, confirmation
1:23:45 > 1:23:55hasn't come through yet. 13-5. Rebecca has the opportunity for a
1:23:55 > 1:23:59trail to make two. Not the easiest shot but she does have one on. She
1:23:59 > 1:24:06is trying...
1:24:06 > 1:24:13is trying...I'm not sure if this will get back in time... If it is
1:24:13 > 1:24:23one red, she will be shaking hands.
1:24:28 > 1:24:35The match has been played at prolific speed. In terms of the
1:24:35 > 1:24:42bowling, because there has been very little time, and discussion between
1:24:42 > 1:24:46the market and the players. It will be up to Francis Fletcher to sort
1:24:46 > 1:24:51this out.
1:24:58 > 1:25:03You would feel that Rebecca would be quite happy. This is just one red.
1:25:03 > 1:25:08She gets off the ring, she hasn't been here a day...It would have
1:25:08 > 1:25:13been tough, she would be feeling a lot of emotions right now. You
1:25:13 > 1:25:18cannot take it away from Katherine, though. She has played exceptionally
1:25:18 > 1:25:22well.We still don't know. No reaction from the players. They will
1:25:22 > 1:25:32be watching very carefully.
1:25:32 > 1:25:38be watching very carefully. Up to another end... Seven shots needed.
1:25:38 > 1:25:4412-6 after nine ends.
1:25:55 > 1:26:05Scoring with a long jack length... 29.5 metres.Interesting to hear her
1:26:05 > 1:26:15views on that after the game.Best not to mention it to her...Not
1:26:15 > 1:26:19straightaway!If it doesn't hurt... There is no point. No point in
1:26:19 > 1:26:24playing.
1:26:27 > 1:26:31playing.After a few days she will rationalise it, and say, I was in
1:26:31 > 1:26:38the final. It just wasn't my day. She didn't settle, she didn't come
1:26:38 > 1:26:41out and settle. That was the problem. She scratched around for a
1:26:41 > 1:26:45few ends in the first set. Unfortunately that continued in the
1:26:45 > 1:26:50second. On the first couple she did not score until the fifth end, did
1:26:50 > 1:26:58she?
1:26:58 > 1:27:04she?She managed to pick up a big four. Look at this. Suddenly, you
1:27:04 > 1:27:11see the true Rebecca Field! You have seen glimpses of it.It is like,
1:27:11 > 1:27:23where had I been all day? You know?
1:27:26 > 1:27:33Attacking...She is in the area.It is a very good strike, yes.Did not
1:27:33 > 1:27:37need to, she could have packed their head but quite comfortable with that
1:27:37 > 1:27:41shot.Instead of letting it build up, she goes early. It is the right
1:27:41 > 1:27:55decision.Kills off the game.
1:27:58 > 1:28:02You would expect Katherine Rednall to draw this. She knows by opening
1:28:02 > 1:28:05it she gives herself the opportunity to do what she does best, which is
1:28:05 > 1:28:13to draw.
1:28:13 > 1:28:19to draw. There you go. The recovery shot. That is going to hurt! That is
1:28:19 > 1:28:29just Rob -- rubbing it in.Two of the best bowls that Rebecca Field
1:28:29 > 1:28:37has played, she has them taken away.
1:28:46 > 1:28:53She is looking to make a disturbance. Not the case. It is all
1:28:53 > 1:29:02over. APPLAUSE CHEERING
1:29:05 > 1:29:09There was absolutely nothing Rebecca Field could do today, to keep
1:29:09 > 1:29:14Katherine Rednall away from the jack. She was absolutely relentless.
1:29:14 > 1:29:20A perfect display of singles. Doing really, really well. Just one end
1:29:20 > 1:29:28where she faulted by losing four. She kept Rebecca on three in the
1:29:28 > 1:29:35first set and two other singles in the second. 13-3, in the first set.
1:29:35 > 1:29:44And a very comfortable 13-6 in the second. 2- 02 Katherine Rednall.
1:29:44 > 1:29:49Well, we could see the pressure was going to be very intense in this
1:29:49 > 1:29:55match, we were not sure where it was going to come from but Rebecca Field
1:29:55 > 1:29:58had to play an attacking shot on the first end and didn't score again
1:29:58 > 1:30:02until the eighth end, in the meantime it was all Katherine
1:30:02 > 1:30:08Rednall, pops in another one of the three and another one for three on
1:30:08 > 1:30:11the sixth end and it goes to 12-1 and it was all getting very
1:30:11 > 1:30:19difficult for Rebecca Field. And once again there is another big four
1:30:19 > 1:30:26for Katherine Rednall, to go 8-0 in front on the fourth end, and Rebecca
1:30:26 > 1:30:30got her own back by picking up a four on the fifth end but it was all
1:30:30 > 1:30:37getting very difficult. Look at this, back touch close to the jack,
1:30:37 > 1:30:41wins the match and the title and Katherine Rednall is the world
1:30:41 > 1:30:46indoor Bowls championship match play singles champion. The end is won was
1:30:46 > 1:30:55always going to be on Katherine's side. Not Rebecca Field's day but
1:30:55 > 1:30:58she was in the final and you couldn't do anything about Katherine
1:30:58 > 1:31:01Rednall. Very few people in the world would have held her down
1:31:01 > 1:31:05today.
1:31:05 > 1:31:09I've got both players with me now and will start with Rebecca. I guess
1:31:09 > 1:31:13you've got to put it down to just one of those days where you've run
1:31:13 > 1:31:19into an opponent who is in fine form.In my opinion I just lost to
1:31:19 > 1:31:24the best lady bowler in the world. So...
1:31:24 > 1:31:27APPLAUSE I can understand if you don't want
1:31:27 > 1:31:32to say anymore, it's totally understandable.It's not good to cry
1:31:32 > 1:31:37on national TV, is it? I will come away and think I didn't play very
1:31:37 > 1:31:41well but this girl puts you under pressure and that's the reason, she
1:31:41 > 1:31:45makes you crack, I played well all week and she was superb today and
1:31:45 > 1:31:49you just have to watch it and there's not much else you can do
1:31:49 > 1:31:52about it. Two finals is fantastic this week and I will take away lots
1:31:52 > 1:32:02of memories from here.Thank you. APPLAUSE
1:32:02 > 1:32:07Katherine, why did you do that to one of your best mates?I feel
1:32:07 > 1:32:09really bad! LAUGHTER
1:32:09 > 1:32:14I guess I just settled into a today, the best I've ever played, I just
1:32:14 > 1:32:20found it from the first end really. I thoroughly enjoyed it... I didn't
1:32:20 > 1:32:23enjoy it really, it was horrible. LAUGHTER
1:32:23 > 1:32:28I don't really know what to say.I was going to as you because you must
1:32:28 > 1:32:31have enjoyed the fact you are playing so well but on the receiving
1:32:31 > 1:32:35end is someone that you know and get on so well with. There were some
1:32:35 > 1:32:41ends when I looked so sorry and felt so sorry for her because I wouldn't
1:32:41 > 1:32:47have had a clue what to do. But I settled into it and I don't think I
1:32:47 > 1:32:50could have done any better. To sum up your achievements, three world
1:32:50 > 1:32:57titles in the space of five years. You are only 22. It is a phenomenal
1:32:57 > 1:33:02achievement. Are you able to take that all in and comprehend it?I
1:33:02 > 1:33:07just love it here, I absolutely love this rink and winning three times is
1:33:07 > 1:33:12incredible, couldn't have dreams on it.Would you set your sights on the
1:33:12 > 1:33:15open singles title?Becky and I qualified for the open pairs this
1:33:15 > 1:33:18year and we will definitely do that again if she will have me.
1:33:18 > 1:33:25Definitely.Rebecca, huge commiserations, and thank you for
1:33:25 > 1:33:28speaking so eloquently in defeat. Ladies and gentlemen, your champion
1:33:28 > 1:33:32of 2018 once again, Katherine Rednall.
1:33:32 > 1:33:42APPLAUSE
1:33:46 > 1:33:51It is time for the presentation and here to make the presentation is the
1:33:51 > 1:33:56underwriting solutions manager for Just, Jill Harvie and chief
1:33:56 > 1:34:00executive of the World Bowls Tour Mr Richard Matheson.
1:34:01 > 1:34:06APPLAUSE
1:34:06 > 1:34:14And first of course to your run-up, receiving a cheque your appreciation
1:34:14 > 1:34:19ladies and gentlemen for Rebecca Field.
1:34:19 > 1:34:24APPLAUSE
1:34:34 > 1:34:41And what about this young lady? She is absolutely phenomenal. Receiving
1:34:41 > 1:34:49a Langham glass trophy, a cheque and title of the 2018 world indoor
1:34:49 > 1:34:52championship, Katherine Rednall.
1:34:52 > 1:35:01APPLAUSE
1:35:10 > 1:35:15Ladies and gentlemen, the pocket dynamo, the 2018 ladies World Match
1:35:15 > 1:35:22Play Championship, Katherine Rednall!
1:35:23 > 1:35:27STUDIO: What a performance in the final from Katherine Rednall, she is
1:35:27 > 1:35:34so comfortable. There is her grandma, and her boyfriend
1:35:34 > 1:35:39celebrating her success. Three world titles since 2014 when she was 18
1:35:39 > 1:35:42years old and she won to the first time, she won last year and
1:35:42 > 1:35:46successfully defended it and she said in her own words that's as good
1:35:46 > 1:35:50as she has ever played on the blue rink, outstanding performance from
1:35:50 > 1:35:53Katherine Rednall. We have highlights from the Australian Open
1:35:53 > 1:35:57coming up on BBC Two when we come off air at 5pm featuring Marin Cilic
1:35:57 > 1:36:04against Kyle Edmund. And then we have the final match in the last 16
1:36:04 > 1:36:08of the open singles between Stewart Anderson and Wayne Willgress
1:36:08 > 1:36:08of the open singles between Stewart Anderson and Wayne Willgress from

1:36:12 > 1:36:20Thursday's action on BBC Two at 12:15am.
1:36:20 > 1:36:23Now we are going to switch our attention to the open singles and
1:36:23 > 1:36:28show you how the draw looks. As we are getting ready for
1:36:28 > 1:36:28show you how the draw looks. As we are getting ready for the
1:36:28 > 1:36:33penultimate match in the last 16. We know that Jason Greenslade, Darren
1:36:33 > 1:36:38Bennett, Mark Dawes, Mervyn King and Robert Paxton are all through so
1:36:38 > 1:36:41only two matches left to go and that next it is Scott Edwards against
1:36:41 > 1:36:45Edward Harlow, and was knocked out Foster in the International Open
1:36:45 > 1:36:48last year and today he's up against not only the world number one but
1:36:48 > 1:36:55also his legion of fans.
1:36:56 > 1:37:04Love Greg Harlow. My favourite player.I absolutely love Greg
1:37:04 > 1:37:09Harlow. He makes an old lady very, very happy.I think Greg Harlow does
1:37:09 > 1:37:14a very good job, not just for Potters but for the game of bowls.
1:37:14 > 1:37:16Can he get me tickets to the Commonwealth Games because I haven't
1:37:16 > 1:37:23got any yet? They love him here and he's won everything you can win in
1:37:23 > 1:37:27this game, one of the greatest players of all time so in a way it
1:37:27 > 1:37:31is a privilege for me to go out and play him. I'm here to try and win
1:37:31 > 1:37:34the world singles like everyone else and it's an honour to go out there
1:37:34 > 1:37:38and play him and I will give it all I can and see if I can get the
1:37:38 > 1:37:45result. I am provisionally number 17 at the moment, so every win is
1:37:45 > 1:37:49massive for me. It's all qualifiers' dreams to get into the top 16 so it
1:37:49 > 1:37:52would be a huge victory for me and a huge debt forward to possibly
1:37:52 > 1:38:00cracking the top 16. -- huge step forward. It was fantastic to be the
1:38:00 > 1:38:03reigning world champion, that was a huge win for me as well, and again
1:38:03 > 1:38:10added to my experience and I feel that has helped me along. That game
1:38:10 > 1:38:15made me feel like I had made a huge leap forward with that win, beating
1:38:15 > 1:38:20such a great player. Nothing beats it. I mean, you come here, just see
1:38:20 > 1:38:25the venue, see the crowds, and you can't wait to get out there. But
1:38:25 > 1:38:28it's a nerve-racking experience stepping on the green. I've been
1:38:28 > 1:38:32here twice now, it's my second time in the singles, before I played Alex
1:38:32 > 1:38:37so that was a huge game when I was last here a few years ago. And,
1:38:37 > 1:38:41yeah, it was nice to have that experience under my belt. The first
1:38:41 > 1:38:48bowl is huge, you've got to get your first bowl going. So if I can beat
1:38:48 > 1:38:52Greg to the jack on my first bowl it gives me a chance every end. If I
1:38:52 > 1:38:58can't get one of my first two bowls going I will be in trouble. In that
1:38:58 > 1:39:02case he plays a greater running bowl as well so even if I'm on the jack
1:39:02 > 1:39:06I'm going to need a bit of luck here and there. I am just fully focused
1:39:06 > 1:39:13on the game and the end and the next bowl, but once you have come off the
1:39:13 > 1:39:16rink you start thinking about the final and the possibility of being
1:39:16 > 1:39:20there and the possibility of lifting the trophy but if you dwell on that
1:39:20 > 1:39:24for too long you will struggle on the green so I try not to. But that
1:39:24 > 1:39:28would be everything. It would be if the 44-year-old from Peacehaven can
1:39:28 > 1:39:31get the better of the former champion Greg Harlow who has had to
1:39:31 > 1:39:33be close to his best just to get this far.
1:39:39 > 1:39:45I played Martin Birkett, my international partner, together with
1:39:45 > 1:39:52him 4-for years, I knew how good he was and he delivered the game I
1:39:52 > 1:39:55thought he would so I knew I would have to be at my very best to win,
1:39:55 > 1:40:03and obviously I was delighted to win. If he'd beat me he would have
1:40:03 > 1:40:10been a worthy winner. I'm happy with my form, I feel I played well in the
1:40:10 > 1:40:13two pairs events, obviously disappointed we missed out on the
1:40:13 > 1:40:16final of the pairs but Mark and Jamie played really well and
1:40:16 > 1:40:21deserved to win. I feel my form is good, I'm quite happy with it. It's
1:40:21 > 1:40:25my second home, I work down here, stay down here a couple of nights
1:40:25 > 1:40:29through all of the bowls breaks so I'm familiar with all the
1:40:29 > 1:40:33surroundings and it helps me get lots of local support from local
1:40:33 > 1:40:38people and staff. Scott on his day can beat any player. He's a hard
1:40:38 > 1:40:43match player plays the open Bowls circuits, he's so used to playing
1:40:43 > 1:40:47the sets scenario so there will be no surprises for him. He's probably
1:40:47 > 1:40:51been here as long as any other player, put in as many hours on the
1:40:51 > 1:40:54carpet as any other player so I know it will be a hard second-round
1:40:54 > 1:40:57match. In 2010 after World Championship I would have loved to
1:40:57 > 1:41:01have done it since then. I've been very close a couple of times. Last
1:41:01 > 1:41:07year in the final. If it doesn't happen it doesn't happen. I'm not
1:41:07 > 1:41:10putting too much pressure on myself but I believe it's definitely there
1:41:10 > 1:41:16to win again.David is behind me as we look ahead to this match between
1:41:16 > 1:41:21Greg Harlow and Scott Edwards. -- alongside me. Looking at the scalps
1:41:21 > 1:41:24Scott Edwards has had so far, looking at some of the players he
1:41:24 > 1:41:28has defeated so far, and how will he go about dismantling the world
1:41:28 > 1:41:32number one today? If anything he would have looked at the first
1:41:32 > 1:41:35match, important regarding Greg Harlow because Greg had to fight
1:41:35 > 1:41:39hard in that to get over the line, and some people thought actually he
1:41:39 > 1:41:44was just a little bit under in terms of his top form. Will he get better?
1:41:44 > 1:41:49I don't know. But the reality is great is the world number one, he is
1:41:49 > 1:41:53a tough competitor, he's obviously coming in as someone who is going to
1:41:53 > 1:41:59be the favourite but this other guy is a very cool customer and he is a
1:41:59 > 1:42:02poker player, that's his occupation. Yes, he keeps his cards close to his
1:42:02 > 1:42:08chest. But what are his skills? We saw in the final today how important
1:42:08 > 1:42:12the early bowls are, when Katherine Rednall hit her straps early on she
1:42:12 > 1:42:16had Rebecca Field on the back foot and never let her in. How important
1:42:16 > 1:42:20will it be for Scott to make an early impression? The same thing
1:42:20 > 1:42:24really, the first two balls put the pressure on, that sets the tone for
1:42:24 > 1:42:28the end and also the tone for the strategy through the match trying to
1:42:28 > 1:42:32find the right length to put your opponent under pressure. Don't worry
1:42:32 > 1:42:36too much about your own game, if you find the right length, the first
1:42:36 > 1:42:39bowl, second bowl, then you have a chance for the third and fourth
1:42:39 > 1:42:42recovery bowls and they are chasing the game, exactly what happened with
1:42:42 > 1:42:46Rebecca Field. She was chasing the whole time.I know we are looking
1:42:46 > 1:42:53ahead at this match but what did you make of
1:42:53 > 1:42:57make of Katherine's performances? She did get a clear run, to be fair.
1:42:57 > 1:43:00Rebecca didn't really put her under any pressure. At one end with
1:43:00 > 1:43:0484-macro told me quite a bit, but at the same time you have to keep the
1:43:04 > 1:43:09pressure on -- with a four. End after end setting of the situation,
1:43:09 > 1:43:13which to be honest with you, there is nobody I know who would want to
1:43:13 > 1:43:18have faced Katherine out there in that form.Man or woman.Probably,
1:43:18 > 1:43:23yes.I also mentioned about the open singles to her and she said she is
1:43:23 > 1:43:27keen to have a go and try and lift that title. How realistic are high
1:43:27 > 1:43:32hopes of winning that in the future? It's very difficult. It really is
1:43:32 > 1:43:36very difficult. Five games in one day minimum as a qualifier and then
1:43:36 > 1:43:43it would be an absolutely... Katherine plays against them men
1:43:43 > 1:43:47quite a lot, can she qualify? Absolutely. Can she repeat that
1:43:47 > 1:43:52performance against one of the top men players? Who knows? If she can
1:43:52 > 1:43:56she can do a lot of damage. It would be fascinating for the game if
1:43:56 > 1:43:59Katherine Rednall made a break in the open singles. We are
1:43:59 > 1:44:03concentrating on the open singles now because of next we have Scott
1:44:03 > 1:44:07Edwards against the world number one Greg Harlow. Korkie is heading to
1:44:07 > 1:44:12the commentary box and we will join Richard Bear. This poker player from
1:44:12 > 1:44:15Oxfordshire is hoping for a full house in this match to earn himself
1:44:15 > 1:44:21a place in the quarterfinals. Last year's PBA European number one
1:44:21 > 1:44:25and former Bowls England National singles finalist, ladies and
1:44:25 > 1:44:31gentlemen, your appreciation please for Scott Edwards.
1:44:47 > 1:44:52Next to one of the game's most naturally gifted players on the
1:44:52 > 1:44:55circuit, three times international and twice Scottish Open champion,
1:44:55 > 1:44:59and former world indoor singles and pairs champion, it's the world
1:44:59 > 1:45:03number one Greg Harlow.
1:45:18 > 1:45:20DAVID CORKILL: after the excellence of Katherine Rednall's performance
1:45:20 > 1:45:34in the ladies singles final what next?
1:45:34 > 1:45:44Interesting challenge for Scott Edwards. He is a very good player.
1:46:07 > 1:46:10Fourth place and a lot of qualifiers, been to a national
1:46:10 > 1:46:18singles before, runner-up, 2010. He knows how to play in the big finals.
1:46:18 > 1:46:25In terms of his career this is like a big final.Yeah, playing the world
1:46:25 > 1:46:29number one, probably the favourite for the tournament with who is left
1:46:29 > 1:46:34in now. He's got nothing to lose, if he plays bowls like that this will
1:46:34 > 1:46:40be a good tussle. No disrespect to anyone else but he is world number
1:46:40 > 1:46:44one so you'd expect him to be the favourite at this stage. In fact,
1:46:44 > 1:46:59probably right from the beginning. Some big names already gone home.
1:46:59 > 1:47:05Paul Foster, Alex Marshall, David Gourlay, Andy Thomson. REFEREE:The
1:47:05 > 1:47:12gap on the shot is nine inches. Two feet short of the jack high.
1:47:35 > 1:47:37Very nearly made it.
1:47:52 > 1:47:58Left-hander. You'd expect him to feel the pressure of this sort of
1:47:58 > 1:48:06game, expect, except for the fact he's playing Greg Harlow.Last bowl,
1:48:06 > 1:48:19please?REFEREE:Two feet gap.My last bowl.15 inches short of jack
1:48:19 > 1:48:21high.
1:48:42 > 1:48:47Again, very, very close, just dropping away.
1:48:47 > 1:48:58dropping away. Confirmed as one red. On his forehand.
1:49:18 > 1:49:21I don't know much about Scott Edwards with regards to his style of
1:49:21 > 1:49:31play. He's been through two qualifiers
1:49:31 > 1:49:35qualifiers before but not well-known to us.I know Scott a little, I
1:49:35 > 1:49:39played against him in some other events, normally a good drawing
1:49:39 > 1:49:45player, doesn't play a lot of big drives. You don't need to if you are
1:49:45 > 1:49:54drawing well.He is a capable player so he will not be unsettled by the
1:49:54 > 1:50:00occasion.
1:50:06 > 1:50:13He is a very serious poker player.
1:50:13 > 1:50:23He should be very cool under pressure.
1:50:46 > 1:50:49APPLAUSE
1:50:54 > 1:51:01REFEREE:Two inches short of jack high.
1:51:26 > 1:51:31Scott Edwards's reaction to this will be steady, steady, steady and
1:51:31 > 1:51:34see what happens. He's got to get a foothold in the game, he needs a
1:51:34 > 1:51:41decent start. Grade isn't quite at the top of his form at the start of
1:51:41 > 1:51:46this match but I'm sure he will improve -- Greg isn't quite. Like
1:51:46 > 1:51:50any game, you've got to feel your way in a bit and Scott won't want to
1:51:50 > 1:51:54drop too many big counts in the game, just keep it tight and stay in
1:51:54 > 1:51:59the match.
1:52:08 > 1:52:18Scott Edwards beat Jonathan Ross in the first match. Jonathan Ross was
1:52:18 > 1:52:21slipping down the rankings and he was in trouble and really needed to
1:52:21 > 1:52:25get through that. Quite likely to drop out of the top 16 if he doesn't
1:52:25 > 1:52:32perform in the next event.
1:52:32 > 1:52:34perform in the next event. That is a handy bowl pushing the green one
1:52:34 > 1:52:37down.
1:53:03 > 1:53:06APPLAUSE
1:53:08 > 1:53:14Just made it there, Greg. Looking at the bottom end of the ranking list
1:53:14 > 1:53:17there are a few players who are still in the tournament, Scott is
1:53:17 > 1:53:22one of them, Wayne Willgress is also one who could affect that list at
1:53:22 > 1:53:29some point.
1:53:39 > 1:53:42Trying very hard with this. A little tap on the green and it might just
1:53:42 > 1:53:46fall out. Wrong side.
1:53:49 > 1:53:54I think this game is going to be quite slow, quite deliberate, all
1:53:54 > 1:54:00within the shot clock rules, of course. We have seen the clock
1:54:00 > 1:54:07running down to single figures quite a bit.
1:54:07 > 1:54:13a bit. 28 seconds on that delivery.
1:54:21 > 1:54:34Could be. Wiggling its way in.
1:54:59 > 1:55:10The crowd stay in their seats after the final. There will be a bit of a
1:55:10 > 1:55:13disturbance on occasions after people come in after a comfort
1:55:13 > 1:55:17break. Generally speaking, the crowd has stayed there. They will be very
1:55:17 > 1:55:22interested in this one because Greg works here and he's very well-known
1:55:22 > 1:55:32to the people who visit Potters Leisure Resort.
1:55:38 > 1:55:54I'm just not sure if Scott will have the firepower to keep Greg at bay.
1:56:01 > 1:56:06Greg's wife Kay is a big supporter and is normally in the auditorium
1:56:06 > 1:56:11but I'm reliably told by Greg that she is baby-sitting the
1:56:11 > 1:56:15granddaughter outside, either, the one-year-old who is a bit lively. I
1:56:15 > 1:56:22can't think that Kay will have much time to watch the polls today.
1:56:22 > 1:56:24One-year-olds can be, quite often they have found their feet and they
1:56:24 > 1:56:36explore every corner. -- time to watch the bowls.
1:56:44 > 1:56:57If you get tired you can always hand them back.
1:56:57 > 1:57:01It could bend inside the red.
1:57:27 > 1:57:34This is good for Scott if it runs, get inside. Yes, he's played it
1:57:34 > 1:57:45well.And it's going to drop back. Well protected now.
1:58:09 > 1:58:16Is it's going to crunch it? Not quite. Good second, though.
1:58:19 > 1:58:26That's where Greg is very good. Doesn't give too much away. If he
1:58:26 > 1:58:29can't get the shot he makes sure he gets the second, doesn't allow you
1:58:29 > 1:58:38to score heavily against him.
1:58:38 > 1:58:41to score heavily against him. In his younger days he played more of a
1:58:41 > 1:58:44maverick game, but he's tightened up quite a bit and been very successful
1:58:44 > 1:58:50on these televised events.Yes, he was a flamboyant player in those
1:58:50 > 1:58:55days and would take risks and chances, at he's much more
1:58:55 > 1:59:00conservative over the last decade or so. It's made a massive difference
1:59:00 > 1:59:08to his CV in terms of tournament wins. Really he's not the only one,
1:59:08 > 1:59:12a bit like Mickey Brett left, who would come in and play aggressive
1:59:12 > 1:59:18shots at the wrong time, and he studied his game and all of a sudden
1:59:18 > 1:59:28he was running away with events. It's a learning process.The very
1:59:28 > 1:59:35top players will be very measured about where they play certain types
1:59:35 > 1:59:40of shops.
2:00:34 > 2:00:44A good correction.
2:00:49 > 2:01:01Just watch Greg on the mat, the ball drops down... He says, touch her.
2:01:01 > 2:01:08Greg is very, very deliberate, now. There is nothing hurried about it.
2:01:08 > 2:01:18Playing the runner...
2:01:19 > 2:01:27Well, the good thing about that is that he has cleared the
2:01:27 > 2:01:31that he has cleared the short ball, still in a good position. He has
2:01:31 > 2:01:43options, he can play either side. One of the few left-handed players
2:01:43 > 2:01:54in this tournament. He has played it well, again. Two touches.Couldn't
2:01:54 > 2:02:01have put that in a better spot, in the centre of the rink.A tough one
2:02:01 > 2:02:08to draw, worth popping into this again...
2:02:12 > 2:02:20again... A great spike. Clearing the two reds away. On the forehand side,
2:02:20 > 2:02:34he does not miss too many. He likes a forehand runner, in particular.
2:02:34 > 2:02:36a forehand runner, in particular. It is always harder to put it back
2:02:36 > 2:02:42again, the third time. He has good line and length, a good feel on the
2:02:42 > 2:02:48carpet at the moment, Scott.
2:02:48 > 2:02:51carpet at the moment, Scott. The track doesn't look too bad, if he
2:02:51 > 2:02:57has the weight.
2:03:06 > 2:03:13We think it is just in, as well. That is a hard shot to play, for the
2:03:13 > 2:03:19third time.
2:03:19 > 2:03:25third time.Greg will be hurt after the draw shot. He isn't, actually.
2:03:25 > 2:03:32Running again. On the high side this time...He did have the back bowl.
2:03:32 > 2:03:41Going for the jack.A good call, if you think about it. Three on the
2:03:41 > 2:03:47re-spot, or in the ditch. Could have taken it off completely.I thought
2:03:47 > 2:03:53that Scott had another go at the backend, he didn't have to go of the
2:03:53 > 2:04:01rink. It was a good call by Greg...
2:04:06 > 2:04:12That is what they are playing for. The glass trophy. The title of world
2:04:12 > 2:04:23professional singles champion.
2:04:29 > 2:04:38One shot, Scott Edwards.
2:04:45 > 2:04:51Set to score, 3-2 at four ends.
2:05:08 > 2:05:16Jack length, 23 metres.How far is it over, please?
2:05:16 > 2:05:21it over, please?It is obviously close.Nine inches.It is OK, it has
2:05:21 > 2:05:27to be a minimum of 23 metres. This will be interesting. A lot of people
2:05:27 > 2:05:35think that the closer the jack, the easier it is. It is not easy. You
2:05:35 > 2:05:40can get in contact with us using the hashtag BBC bowls. We've had a
2:05:40 > 2:05:46question about the position of your thumb on the bowl and what
2:05:46 > 2:05:52difference it makes. Do you want to take that?I am quite happy to take
2:05:52 > 2:05:58that. It depends, the traditional grip, the cradle grip or a claw
2:05:58 > 2:06:03grip, the phone would be quite low at the side of the bowl. With a
2:06:03 > 2:06:08claw, your thumb would be quite high on the ball. Have a look at one of
2:06:08 > 2:06:13the guys right now.
2:06:13 > 2:06:20the guys right now. That would be more of a cradle in the hand...
2:06:20 > 2:06:23more of a cradle in the hand... The sum is quite high, using his grip on
2:06:23 > 2:06:31the side. Putting his thumb into the grip. Andy Thomson's summer is quite
2:06:31 > 2:06:38high on the bowl is quite high when he delivers -- here's thumb. Some
2:06:38 > 2:06:44put their thumb in the middle of the running surface. That is quite high
2:06:44 > 2:06:50on the top of the ball, near the grip. A traditional claw grip. It
2:06:50 > 2:06:55comes down to personal comfort. They would say to anybody listening in,
2:06:55 > 2:06:59whatever feels good... If it works for you, it is consistent and you
2:06:59 > 2:07:07have no problems, do not change it. Don't fix it if you do not need
2:07:07 > 2:07:14mending!That takes most of the coaches work away from him, around
2:07:14 > 2:07:24the UK.
2:07:25 > 2:07:30Always useful advice, especially if you are just a beginner. A bit like
2:07:30 > 2:07:37the delivery in many ways. If it is comfortable, that is fine. If it is
2:07:37 > 2:07:48effective, that is even better.
2:08:33 > 2:08:40Dropped in on the green ball...
2:08:40 > 2:08:43Could save could easily have fallen in for a shot, then. He would be
2:08:43 > 2:08:50happy with that.It is a recovery bowl, isn't it? The best he can do
2:08:50 > 2:09:00now is two...
2:09:02 > 2:09:18He has made it.Two shots, Greg Harlow. Good weight and line, he
2:09:18 > 2:09:24knew that he would get in.
2:09:24 > 2:09:29knew that he would get in. It all counts at the end... Missing a
2:09:29 > 2:09:36couple of those, and it can cost you the set.
2:10:03 > 2:10:09The ladies final was so fast, it really was.Irrespective of the
2:10:09 > 2:10:18scoreline, the game was played at a fast pace.
2:10:18 > 2:10:21fast pace.Just makes this game looks very slow, when it isn't
2:10:21 > 2:10:30really. Probably close to normal. Both of these players, for different
2:10:30 > 2:10:34reasons, make sure they take their time. And there are no mistakes.
2:10:34 > 2:10:42Then we get into the major stages of this championship.
2:10:57 > 2:11:11A slight correction... Very nearly made it.
2:11:25 > 2:11:35A good bowl...You may see the runner coming out from Greg again.
2:11:35 > 2:11:40He has won well hidden in there. It is probably well worth it. The
2:11:40 > 2:11:46forehand runner...
2:11:48 > 2:12:02forehand runner... A bit of work to do.Taking the back bowl away.
2:12:23 > 2:12:26Refusing the chance to draw another one. He plays for position, getting
2:12:26 > 2:12:37in a spot on that side...
2:12:50 > 2:12:54Greg was probably always going to draw with the fourth bowl. Did not
2:12:54 > 2:13:00have that back position.
2:13:00 > 2:13:07have that back position. He is going to loosen up that green one as well.
2:13:11 > 2:13:16A purposeful march down the green from Scott Edwards, he sees the
2:13:16 > 2:13:29opportunity here.Yes, the chance for a good three shots.
2:13:40 > 2:13:47He has taken it as well!Has he ever?
2:13:47 > 2:13:56ever? Three shots, Scott Edwards.
2:14:04 > 2:14:09Second-round singles match, back to nine ends in the set. Two sets and
2:14:09 > 2:14:20another three and tie-break. -- three and tie-break.Are they waving
2:14:20 > 2:14:26at you, Dave? They were talking to me outside!
2:14:26 > 2:14:34They said they were looking for the good-looking one! They could not
2:14:34 > 2:14:43find Rishi! Second-best again!
2:14:43 > 2:14:48I think they said they were down from Gloucestershire.A nice part of
2:14:48 > 2:14:54the world. Scott, what has happened here? Three good bowls, the last end
2:14:54 > 2:15:05and you play a loose one!
2:15:14 > 2:15:25He has only just passed it. Give Scott another chance.
2:15:27 > 2:15:30Scott another chance. Scott plays a lot of singles. Open events on
2:15:30 > 2:15:36weekends. Singles play is different to anything else. You can get in the
2:15:36 > 2:15:43groove... The tactics of singles as well is very important. You will be
2:15:43 > 2:15:47very comfortable out there. You don't want to play many loose ends.
2:15:47 > 2:15:52He needs to capitalise on his lead... Looking for a couple of
2:15:52 > 2:15:58singles. Two poor opening balls. You would not expect Greg to make a
2:15:58 > 2:16:05mistake with the second delivery.
2:16:28 > 2:16:34He needs to pass it... I think he touch took him away from the other
2:16:34 > 2:16:47green bowl. I think he would have rested it.
2:17:00 > 2:17:11A good line in again. A bit of room there for Scott. He played a scrappy
2:17:11 > 2:17:21end here. Does not want to drop a three shot.Mark Royal. Standing and
2:17:21 > 2:17:28watching. Players have a tendency to go up into the green seats, as we
2:17:28 > 2:17:33call them.
2:17:41 > 2:17:47Got to truck through to this one... Yes. As you said, it was a scrappy
2:17:47 > 2:17:53end. Especially after picking up three.
2:17:53 > 2:18:01three. I can see why he played that side, he had his own ball coming in.
2:18:01 > 2:18:12A chance to take back the lead.
2:18:15 > 2:18:27Did not want the touch. May have taken that one out.
2:19:03 > 2:19:09Jack length 29.5 metres.
2:19:28 > 2:19:42He takes the first ball, this time, for Greg.
2:19:51 > 2:19:57A good try, if he gets back to the green. Doesn't want to drop it down.
2:19:57 > 2:20:06A bit unlucky with that one. Scott Edwards, bowling with a tiny bit
2:20:06 > 2:20:19less bias. A bit flatter than Greg's.
2:20:23 > 2:20:35The gap on the shop bowl is four inches.
2:20:46 > 2:20:52He didn't get it out there, though... Overplayed it. Now, he is
2:20:52 > 2:20:59in trouble. He was playing very well up to the last end. Just got a
2:20:59 > 2:21:04little loose. Two feed, 2.5 feet, not good enough at this level
2:21:04 > 2:21:14indoors.
2:21:31 > 2:21:36That was short on the last bowl. He has given him another go at this.
2:21:36 > 2:21:42Inside of the line. You worry about the overcorrection, really. There it
2:21:42 > 2:21:47is, a couple of feet through, you try and take that off and suddenly,
2:21:47 > 2:21:56you drop four or five feet. Now, a chance for Greg close it down.
2:21:56 > 2:22:10chance for Greg close it down.He lost his way, it could prove fatal.
2:22:10 > 2:22:20Struggling with this...Well, at the very least he needs a second shot.
2:22:20 > 2:22:24Doesn't want to be looking for a double in the last end, to try and
2:22:24 > 2:22:31share something.
2:22:31 > 2:22:33share something.Mark Dawes, an interested spectator, already
2:22:33 > 2:22:40through to the quarterfinals. A man in form.He is playing well. A good
2:22:40 > 2:22:47player, Mark Dawes. A really good player.Scott, needs an improvement
2:22:47 > 2:22:54on the last bowl.Looking heavy... He completely lost the pace of the
2:22:54 > 2:23:12green.Two shots, he would consider himself lucky to pick up a single.
2:23:32 > 2:23:38Jack length, 28 metres. The last two ends have been a bonus for Greg
2:23:38 > 2:23:44Harlow. He hasn't been brilliant, two shots on both of the ends. A
2:23:44 > 2:23:50cushion going into the last, now.
2:24:02 > 2:24:08You'd expect it to be a good first bowl.
2:24:10 > 2:24:13bowl. Scott, can you get back to that early set form, when you were
2:24:13 > 2:24:20playing those really good bowls in your first deliveries?
2:24:20 > 2:24:31your first deliveries? This is better. All positive...
2:25:03 > 2:25:07Scott delivering the ball, where he is looking, down the green. Quite
2:25:07 > 2:25:13often the players use a yellow marker on the sides of the green.
2:25:13 > 2:25:19They use the rink to give the an idea of where to place the bowl. A
2:25:19 > 2:25:27centre mark-up. Some people do not use anything. We call them
2:25:27 > 2:25:30use anything. We call them natural sighters. Years ago, it used to be
2:25:30 > 2:25:35where you would put your balls back, on the side of the green. On the
2:25:35 > 2:25:40bank, without anyone noticing. That was your line, for that hand. People
2:25:40 > 2:25:46got wise to it, pretty quickly! But some tried it.Others close their
2:25:46 > 2:25:59eyes and hope for the best! Black-and-white too!
2:26:12 > 2:26:15-- that can work too!
2:26:20 > 2:26:23Going to have two move that green bowl, they would like to do it, with
2:26:23 > 2:26:33this one...
2:26:33 > 2:26:36this one... Underneath it... Yes, missing that line and it will swing
2:26:36 > 2:26:43like mad. Going towards the re-sparked position. He has two
2:26:43 > 2:26:50there.
2:26:50 > 2:26:54there.Looking at that end, Greg may go to the re-sparked position and
2:26:54 > 2:27:03cover it there. If the jack was to be driven dead.Absolutely, that is
2:27:03 > 2:27:10what we are looking for there. That brings in two redpolls. If Greg can
2:27:10 > 2:27:16get something close to that, but ideally, anything in this area would
2:27:16 > 2:27:27also be useful, in case it springs across.
2:27:27 > 2:27:32across. At the moment, Scott has to play an absolutely brilliant bowl to
2:27:32 > 2:27:42rest the green out and get two.
2:27:42 > 2:27:46rest the green out and get two.He can cover both of those. I think he
2:27:46 > 2:27:53has decided well, to get to the spot, really well played. That is
2:27:53 > 2:27:58good enough, he is in second position for the re-spot. He is more
2:27:58 > 2:28:03or less forcing Scott to play a very difficult shot. Really, I think it
2:28:03 > 2:28:09is a draw to the green. Turning it away, staying for two. You cannot
2:28:09 > 2:28:17get two on the re-spot, now.It isn't easy by any means. Looking to
2:28:17 > 2:28:24drift and ease the green ball, if you can. Just through the head. Stay
2:28:24 > 2:28:30in its place, for a double. You could have a flash at it, and hope
2:28:30 > 2:28:36for a fortunate result. But... It doesn't look like it is possible at
2:28:36 > 2:28:47the moment. Everything seems to be covered.
2:28:59 > 2:29:03If he has cut this down underneath, he doesn't have a hope with it. It
2:29:03 > 2:29:16had to be a draw shot.Toe the line in. Give it a chance.
2:29:19 > 2:29:22in. Give it a chance. Harlow, back in the hall to see the old man
2:29:22 > 2:29:33playing. I wonder where the granddaughter is?
2:29:35 > 2:29:41A strange set, in the end. It fizzled out a little bit. Scott lost
2:29:41 > 2:29:48his form, and Greg went over the line.It was almost like he lost his
2:29:48 > 2:29:53line and wait. A number of bowls, especially at the start of the head.
2:29:53 > 2:30:06The first two seemed to go wayward. You really cannot afford to do that.
2:30:12 > 2:30:18APPLAUSE
2:30:33 > 2:30:38APPLAUSE
2:30:39 > 2:30:50More like the Scott Waites we saw in the early stages. -- the Scott we
2:30:50 > 2:30:53saw.
2:31:03 > 2:31:14REFEREE:Time-out called.
2:31:14 > 2:31:20I'm being destructed all the time. Greg has asked for the clock to be
2:31:20 > 2:31:25reset, there was movement
2:31:25 > 2:31:28reset, there was movement when he set down on the mat.I think there
2:31:28 > 2:31:33was a bit of front Row activity. I think he's pushed this one away,
2:31:33 > 2:31:39turned his back on it. Doesn't look that far away but we will see.
2:31:44 > 2:31:53It gives him a very good shoulder with the next one.
2:32:04 > 2:32:14Very good. Even one of those in the last three ends would have been
2:32:14 > 2:32:27good. Greg wasting no time going for the runner.
2:32:28 > 2:32:32the runner. On the re-spot he is going to be one shot down but it
2:32:32 > 2:32:38won't really matter, he has another bowl to come.It was a good strike.
2:32:38 > 2:32:49Nothing else he could do with that really, start again. On the re-spot
2:32:49 > 2:32:52position Scott will need to get close, he knows Greg is more than
2:32:52 > 2:32:59capable of beating that side ball.
2:33:10 > 2:33:17That's not bad.
2:33:30 > 2:33:35Out towards the boards, flirting with the edge. He's good, though.
2:33:35 > 2:33:45Very good. Good shot. There is a chance for Scott here.If he has two
2:33:45 > 2:33:52microseconds, drive it off. There are Philip Francis Fletcher know
2:33:52 > 2:34:02what the problem was at the other end. That's all.
2:34:02 > 2:34:09end. That's all.Scott hasn't used a lot of weight in this game so far,
2:34:09 > 2:34:13but he has a chance to strike the green bowl away.If he's got two
2:34:13 > 2:34:19microseconds he's in no danger of taking them both away. Pluck a ball
2:34:19 > 2:34:29out, don't try and keep your own ball in.He's playing it.He's
2:34:29 > 2:34:39interested. Has he got enough? It just needs to roll another time.
2:34:39 > 2:34:46Certainly for one.
2:34:46 > 2:34:57REFEREE:1-shot, Scott Edwards. Scott has three time-outs remaining.
2:34:58 > 2:35:04That was well played by Scott, it just shows he can play that weighted
2:35:04 > 2:35:08bowl, he prefers to draw but he does have that in his locker. It was a
2:35:08 > 2:35:11good strike, he got the edge of the ball and it was good enough. The
2:35:11 > 2:35:17problem for some of the players here is that it's so quiet in the arena
2:35:17 > 2:35:22there whenever there is a disturbance it really puts the
2:35:22 > 2:35:28players off. If there is a constant background noise like there is in
2:35:28 > 2:35:31Crown Green, for instance, you don't even notice things when people shout
2:35:31 > 2:35:37at you or say something. It's a different type of game, that's all.
2:35:37 > 2:35:42There has been a discussion, or argument, not an argument but a
2:35:42 > 2:35:46thorough discussion, about having some background music on, or some
2:35:46 > 2:35:52sort of thing like that. You would probably get into the discussion of
2:35:52 > 2:36:00what music to use. It's never an easy one.
2:36:00 > 2:36:03Just something in the background, doesn't have to be noisy, you would
2:36:03 > 2:36:06still get an opportunity to have discussions with the players.
2:36:06 > 2:36:12Nothing that would be really disturbing.They need a bit of
2:36:12 > 2:36:19terracing like the old days in football.Crown green.Music piped
2:36:19 > 2:36:26in and a pie. Then we would have some noise.Really good effort. We
2:36:26 > 2:36:38get a bit of noise in the evening match.
2:36:40 > 2:36:48I've a feeling that Wayne Willgress will be bringing down some support.
2:36:48 > 2:36:53There is terracing at the Waterloo, Mark Gordon's place, a great event
2:36:53 > 2:37:00at Crown Waterloo. There is terracing there where they have
2:37:00 > 2:37:10their liquid refreshment, shouting at the players.
2:38:02 > 2:38:05A little touch on the Red Bull might just be enough to give him number
2:38:05 > 2:38:11one. -- the Red Bull.
2:38:11 > 2:38:17It is a narrow angle.
2:38:41 > 2:38:48The hard way in. On the backhand. It's possible. The other side was
2:38:48 > 2:38:53wide open.
2:38:55 > 2:38:58wide open.At the moment Scott needs to do something different to get
2:38:58 > 2:39:05Greg under a bit more pressure. Greg would be quite happy to share ones
2:39:05 > 2:39:15in the early stages. He nearly made it two.
2:39:15 > 2:39:20it two. Keeping in touch the first four or five ends, that's what
2:39:20 > 2:39:25happened in the first set, Scott fell away. Scott needs to make Greg
2:39:25 > 2:39:30play a few more shots and put him under a bit more pressure. Easier
2:39:30 > 2:39:36said than done. But he's a little bit too comfortable at the moment.
2:39:36 > 2:39:45He lost the last three ends of the set 2-2 and from a 6-4 position to
2:39:45 > 2:39:50lose it 9-6.
2:40:53 > 2:41:01Good second ball.
2:41:01 > 2:41:10That first bowl, you just can't leave it where it is, drop it down
2:41:10 > 2:41:16three feet.
2:41:17 > 2:41:21That's now two short balls and by the time he plays his third Greg
2:41:21 > 2:41:29will be lying three.Greg is switching on to the forehand, very
2:41:29 > 2:41:32deliberately, he knows if he plays a good bowl he will close out that
2:41:32 > 2:41:37side to Scott.
2:41:41 > 2:41:46side to Scott. It is a closer number one, still open on that side for
2:41:46 > 2:41:55Scott Edwards' backhand.
2:42:11 > 2:42:15That is really disappointing from Scott. At any level of bowls you
2:42:15 > 2:42:20can't afford all three bowls to be poor, can't afford to be down there.
2:42:20 > 2:42:23This level in particular but at club level that would get punished.
2:42:42 > 2:42:47Needs to bend into it, doesn't want to leave a catch.That's exactly
2:42:47 > 2:42:52what it's done, left shoulder to rest on, three good bowls. The other
2:42:52 > 2:43:01three are quite adjacent to the jack. It's a very soft at the moment
2:43:01 > 2:43:05because of the three short balls. We know he's capable of drawing this,
2:43:05 > 2:43:09he just needs to clear his head.I'm just looking, is he going to play
2:43:09 > 2:43:15this on the forehand from the front foot plant? He is, there is a plant
2:43:15 > 2:43:20coming in. If it's through the gap it's different. He took one away.
2:43:20 > 2:43:31The plant was there.He was playing one right into it.Obviously wasn't
2:43:31 > 2:43:36confident to draw it and that sends a message.Everything would have
2:43:36 > 2:43:50needed to go right down,, strike to get anything. He did reduce it.
2:44:37 > 2:44:44Short balls focus your mind to push through the next end. Not unusual
2:44:44 > 2:44:52but better to have it there.
2:45:06 > 2:45:12APPLAUSE
2:45:17 > 2:45:28Scott has swapped sides again. Doesn't seem totally convinced. Just
2:45:28 > 2:45:34lost his way completely at the moment. Greg is laying two, but
2:45:34 > 2:45:44there is nothing very close.
2:45:48 > 2:45:58That's the best bowl so far. If Scott can't get back on his game
2:45:58 > 2:46:04this will not last very long. He's all over the park at the moment.
2:46:04 > 2:46:17Yes, he is.He's running now. He needs a connection. He got two away.
2:46:17 > 2:46:23It's pretty good to take two away but at 4-1 he really needed that
2:46:23 > 2:46:30jack back to the red balls. We see this so often, just a drip, drip of
2:46:30 > 2:46:40constant pressure from Greg, and as soon as Scott Edwards starts to
2:46:40 > 2:46:45loosen up the shots start appearing. It is more a case of Scott losing
2:46:45 > 2:46:50his line and length of a little bit. Greg has been playing OK but he has
2:46:50 > 2:46:52been peppering it.
2:47:03 > 2:47:14That is a loose one from Greg. After a drive it is tempting. It is not an
2:47:14 > 2:47:18easy draw. He could play controlled, try and pick up the jack and push
2:47:18 > 2:47:24the ball out.I was a good option because at least if he plays
2:47:24 > 2:47:34controlled weight he will get back to the jack. He's playing the
2:47:34 > 2:47:38to the jack.He's playing the bowl or the jack.I don't believe it.
2:47:38 > 2:47:45Dear oh dear. That might actually cost him another one. That is an
2:47:45 > 2:47:54absolute shocker. Just the one but it's a shocking result. REFEREE:
2:47:54 > 2:48:051-shot, Greg Harlow. 1-5 after four ends.
2:48:05 > 2:48:08Whenever a game is going slightly against you that's the sort of thing
2:48:08 > 2:48:13that happens.Yeah, he played those weighted balls because he wasn't
2:48:13 > 2:48:17drawing particularly well and you need a bit of luck than. He was on
2:48:17 > 2:48:25target, couldn't have played them much better. It comes down to bowls
2:48:25 > 2:48:30in their head that when you matches and he hasn't put enough in the head
2:48:30 > 2:48:39in the last few ends, drifting away quickly.
2:48:46 > 2:48:50This game has been a lot more comfortable for Greg Harlow on his
2:48:50 > 2:48:59first round match was against Martin Puckett who played so well. It was a
2:48:59 > 2:49:04brilliant game of bowls.
2:49:33 > 2:49:44Made sure he was arriving to the bowl, tucked in behind it.
2:49:44 > 2:49:49Is he going again early?Yes, he's going for the bowls and he is very
2:49:49 > 2:49:58close. Cleared everything. It looks like it's going off the rink. They
2:49:58 > 2:50:07will have to check it. It's very close to staying on.
2:50:13 > 2:50:21Confirmed as going out, goes on to the re-spot. That was a good strike,
2:50:21 > 2:50:26wasn't easy.He's decided to be aggressive because he's struggling
2:50:26 > 2:50:30on his drawer, particularly on the shorter length jacks. You can't
2:50:30 > 2:50:37blame him for that.
2:50:40 > 2:50:52The trouble is Greg is getting the free rein now. There is no pressure
2:50:52 > 2:50:56on him to get that close and when you have no pressure you tend to
2:50:56 > 2:51:01land it.When under pressure and things are not going well you end up
2:51:01 > 2:51:05with two feet jack high and give your opponent a chance. Interesting
2:51:05 > 2:51:14to see if he goes again at this. He's going again.Goodness me.Very
2:51:14 > 2:51:20close again. It's gone off the other side, it will be another re-spot.
2:51:20 > 2:51:24This is pinball Wizard, isn't it? Pinball Wizard, all over the rink.
2:51:24 > 2:51:28The only way he could get the shot was to push it over that side.He is
2:51:28 > 2:51:35having a laugh at that anyway. I'm not sure Greg is laughing. No, but
2:51:35 > 2:51:39it wasn't really the right shot to play. OK, Greg, let's see if you can
2:51:39 > 2:51:46do it of the other side. Just waiting for all of the debris to be
2:51:46 > 2:51:53moved out of the way and sorted out. He needs danger money at the moment
2:51:53 > 2:51:59the way that jack is flying around. As soon as he says it's one green or
2:51:59 > 2:52:03one red that is the shot clock starts. The player can take their
2:52:03 > 2:52:10time.
2:52:10 > 2:52:17time.Not quite as accurate with that one. Little chance for Scott.
2:52:17 > 2:52:21Still one red, that was a loose one. This is a brilliant chance for a
2:52:21 > 2:52:27double.
2:52:40 > 2:52:50Well done, Scott.That's more like it.He's done well, really, some
2:52:50 > 2:53:00good firing shots, and he's recovered.
2:53:00 > 2:53:06recovered.It brings him back into contention with four ends to go.
2:53:19 > 2:53:22There is a bit of explanation going on, he hit this jack and hit this
2:53:22 > 2:53:31ball and it ping-pong or over the place. There you go, you see. -- all
2:53:31 > 2:53:37over the place.
2:53:54 > 2:54:05There we are, he loosened his arm with those running bowls.
2:54:19 > 2:54:24APPLAUSE
2:54:24 > 2:54:29First time he gets a decent ball around there and Greg eases him off.
2:54:29 > 2:54:32Greg played himself into a decent line and length of the moment, and
2:54:32 > 2:54:39he has the bit between his teeth and can see the finishing line. Scott on
2:54:39 > 2:54:48a good line again, just needs to drop to the green. Will he get back?
2:55:13 > 2:55:21He has backed up the first ball with a very good second one. That is a
2:55:21 > 2:55:25really good line and length, lots of close balls in.Is just doing enough
2:55:25 > 2:55:31at times to keep that distance, to keep that gap.Greg has played well
2:55:31 > 2:55:42during the game. Good strike again. Right into the open. That will go on
2:55:42 > 2:55:48the re-spot, plenty of room all around it.
2:55:49 > 2:55:52around it. The only problem for Scott Edwards this end is he doesn't
2:55:52 > 2:55:55have the last ball. I think he's decided he needs to be aggressive in
2:55:55 > 2:55:59this match, and he's made that decision on the basis that his
2:55:59 > 2:56:03drawing has gone off a little bit. Even when he's played a good one now
2:56:03 > 2:56:09he's being beaten by the punch by Greg. He's decided to go aggressive
2:56:09 > 2:56:13and probably that's the way it's going to be now for the rest of the
2:56:13 > 2:56:22match. If he gets close with this he is in trouble Scott. It's not bad
2:56:22 > 2:56:35but it's eatable. That's a decent ball. If he takes the ball off he
2:56:35 > 2:56:39will lie two but the problem with that is he's leaving Greg so much
2:56:39 > 2:56:44room.He's a poker player.I don't think he will gamble with this one.
2:56:44 > 2:56:50No, just a draw.
2:56:50 > 2:56:58No, just a draw. Good line. Has it got the weight?Just needs to hurry
2:56:58 > 2:57:10a little bit.So near.
2:57:21 > 2:57:24It's interesting, Greg has opted to go on the forehand, which I assume
2:57:24 > 2:57:30is to come outside the short balls that are well down the rink. He's
2:57:30 > 2:57:33playing very safe here, doesn't want to give anything away. He's letting
2:57:33 > 2:57:38the balls drift in on the bias. Looking for a good length. This is
2:57:38 > 2:57:49the tourist route in, the long way round.
2:57:54 > 2:58:00I'm sure there is a movie called that, The Long Way Round. There is
2:58:00 > 2:58:10one called The Long Way Home.If this continues he will be setting
2:58:10 > 2:58:16the sat nav to go home. The mat is well up the green again and this has
2:58:16 > 2:58:29proved fruitful for him. A different length has really worked well.
2:58:41 > 2:58:47He is really upping it now, Greg.
2:59:29 > 2:59:371-shot and the next one just behind, that's very good stuff, good
2:59:37 > 2:59:44receiving position right away and a good single.
2:59:51 > 2:59:58Still under it.
3:00:17 > 3:00:21Another, in front as well. This could be over very quickly, this
3:00:21 > 3:00:28match. If he gets it out to the right-hand side, he has got the
3:00:28 > 3:00:36spot...Well, you know, it is a single bar target again. He misses
3:00:36 > 3:00:40the front and he takes the other out but these are all precious strikes
3:00:40 > 3:00:48he has been asked to make.
3:00:48 > 3:00:52he has been asked to make.Played it well again. Very unlucky in a way.
3:00:52 > 3:00:57For the jack may have bounced. It has gone all the way through. He
3:00:57 > 3:01:02needed it out on a re-spot. Two bowls waiting out there. It is in
3:01:02 > 3:01:07the ditch.
3:01:13 > 3:01:19The shot is a distance away, 7.5 feet. The draw is a lot closer on
3:01:19 > 3:01:29this one.
3:01:40 > 3:01:47It is a shot, and it is definitely beatable. The trouble is to beat it,
3:01:47 > 3:01:53he has two flirt with going into the ditch. He has a couple of feet. It
3:01:53 > 3:01:57is never going to be easy when you are down on the board, the shot is
3:01:57 > 3:02:10against and you have a running bowl. He has popped it out on a high line.
3:02:10 > 3:02:17Does he have enough weight on this? Nowhere near.Oh dear, not even
3:02:17 > 3:02:24receiving the second. My goodness me.
3:02:24 > 3:02:36me. He saved a second in the end. It was a very conservative effort. One
3:02:36 > 3:02:43shot to Greg Harlow, and he is through to the quarterfinals...
3:02:45 > 3:02:51Ecuador still measure, and he is also through.
3:02:57 > 3:03:04-- ecru distant measure.
3:03:33 > 3:03:40Greg, losing the first ball for a first time in a feud ends. It is a
3:03:40 > 3:03:44chance for Scott... That is good. Well done, Scott. Taking advantage
3:03:44 > 3:03:49of that when he needed it.
3:04:07 > 3:04:16No mistakes.He has made it.
3:04:34 > 3:04:39A good effort. Needed to be there. The ball on the jack, he has a good
3:04:39 > 3:04:44spot. I cannot blame him playing that kind of weight. Trying to draw
3:04:44 > 3:04:52it off. Get the ball clean, bring the jack into the open.
3:05:05 > 3:05:14Trying to split the two rates, that one will not help him there -- reds.
3:05:14 > 3:05:19It is a similar bowl for Scott, really. Arriving on the jack, or the
3:05:19 > 3:05:33bowl.He is going stronger. He is in the area. He has his own bowl. That
3:05:33 > 3:05:38is not a good result. He easily could have taken the bowl and spun
3:05:38 > 3:05:43onto the jack afterwards. With a good hit. With that kind of weight
3:05:43 > 3:05:55you leave so much space to draw another into. Not sure of his line
3:05:55 > 3:06:00at the moment. The problem here, for Greg, it depends who shoots, to the
3:06:00 > 3:06:06right of the jack, there is a possibility that if Scott pulled the
3:06:06 > 3:06:11jack he could make three or four. I wonder whether Greg would cover that
3:06:11 > 3:06:17instead of playing for another close ball. You would think it is one red.
3:06:17 > 3:06:27So it doesn't really cover something if it is one down. If it is one down
3:06:27 > 3:06:33he will want to draw a shot. And get the game over. Covering something
3:06:33 > 3:06:37that may or may not happen but he can do it on his forehand.
3:06:37 > 3:06:44Absolutely. He is moving in a forehand direction. If he misses it,
3:06:44 > 3:07:00he can get into the cover position. Nice line in...
3:07:11 > 3:07:21Match live. -- lie.It is a simple one for Scott, does he draw for one
3:07:21 > 3:07:27or does he try and play betrayal? A couple of metres to get three or
3:07:27 > 3:07:38four?One is not enough. It just isn't going to happen. So I think
3:07:38 > 3:07:41that he really should... You know, take the risk and try and trailed
3:07:41 > 3:07:45the jack back. If you miss, shake hands but if you get it you are in
3:07:45 > 3:07:54with a real chance.I had to agree with you on that. Half an
3:07:54 > 3:07:57opportunity, not really a half chance but it is possible, to go
3:07:57 > 3:08:05right the rate through. -- right the way through. It is difficult, he has
3:08:05 > 3:08:13two control the weight as well. Six or seven feet... He plays it, giving
3:08:13 > 3:08:19it a go inside of the line...On the back-end of the green one... The Rob
3:08:19 > 3:08:26green one!
3:08:28 > 3:08:33It was a straightforward game for Greg Harlow in the end. He really
3:08:33 > 3:08:38did put some pressure on him until the seventh end in the first set,
3:08:38 > 3:08:42losing a double, a double on the eighth, a single on the ninth. It
3:08:42 > 3:08:48was Greg Harlow after that as well. Taking control in the second set. In
3:08:48 > 3:08:59the end, winning six ends against two. So Greg Harlow, 9-6 and 9-3.
3:09:03 > 3:09:04two. So Greg Harlow, 9-6 and 9-3. As the crowd get up and leave the
3:09:04 > 3:09:08arena, as we look at Scott Edwards, we thought it might be a challenge
3:09:08 > 3:09:15for Greg Harlow, but he was in good form. In the fifth end, going 4-3 in
3:09:15 > 3:09:26front. Scott Edwards got a treble in the next end, but a couple later, he
3:09:26 > 3:09:31dropped in for two here. Giving him an 8-6 situation but then he moved
3:09:31 > 3:09:40ahead with three. In the next end. Unlucky in that one. In the end,
3:09:40 > 3:09:48losing a shot. It was a shocker, wasn't it? Just off-line with his
3:09:48 > 3:09:58last ball, Greg Harlow makes his way to the quarterfinal, and rightly so.
3:09:58 > 3:10:04These are the statistics. That pretty well reflects the game, to be
3:10:04 > 3:10:11fair. Nothing too long on that one, going towards a longer length than
3:10:11 > 3:10:16Scott Edwards, but I think he was pushed in the first round, he
3:10:16 > 3:10:21cruised through with a bit of opposition, certainly, but feeling
3:10:21 > 3:10:27in good form as he moves into the quarterfinals.
3:10:27 > 3:10:31I have Scott and grow with me now. Scott, how do you assess your
3:10:31 > 3:10:39performance?I was pretty pleased with how I started the first set,
3:10:39 > 3:10:43but I chucked a couple of review ends in there, and it ended up
3:10:43 > 3:10:48costing me. Greg began to perform a little better. In the second set
3:10:48 > 3:10:52onwards, it put me in some trouble. I played six running bowls and I hit
3:10:52 > 3:10:58everyone. I've never done that in my life! I have to be happy with that
3:10:58 > 3:11:04but broke was the deserving winner. Did you enjoy the experience?I've
3:11:04 > 3:11:08loved the time I've had here the last couple of weeks. I've learned a
3:11:08 > 3:11:12lot, and as Greg said, I've put in a lot of time and I've learnt a lot
3:11:12 > 3:11:16about the rink. But you've got to perform better than that to beat a
3:11:16 > 3:11:17man with Greg's
3:11:17 > 3:11:18perform better than that to beat a man with Greg's class. But you did
3:11:18 > 3:11:24put in a lot of effort. He works hard, he didn't make things all that
3:11:24 > 3:11:29easy for you today? He put me under a lot of pressure. In the first set,
3:11:29 > 3:11:38playing extremely well and
3:11:38 > 3:11:40playing extremely well and even when I drew a brilliant shot on the spot,
3:11:40 > 3:11:43then the next minute it is another re-spot. I know here's a poker
3:11:43 > 3:11:45player but I don't know if he had his long sleeves and! He played
3:11:45 > 3:11:48extremely well. It could have been a different story. And Martin tested
3:11:48 > 3:11:52you out in the first round. How much progression have you got left? You
3:11:52 > 3:11:58won before, it is the kind of tournament where you cannot get to
3:11:58 > 3:12:03the bottom of the well too soon?It is a long and strong out tournament,
3:12:03 > 3:12:08there's a gap for all players, from the first round to the second round
3:12:08 > 3:12:13but now it is the business round more less every day. Whoever will
3:12:13 > 3:12:18win will steadily improve over the next few days. How much improvement
3:12:18 > 3:12:22left in the locker?Definitely some improvement, I need to compete on
3:12:22 > 3:12:28the first and second bowl, if your opponent is putting you under
3:12:28 > 3:12:33pressure, it depends on how they play as well. I'm delighted to be in
3:12:33 > 3:12:45the quarterfinals.And the ladies, you keep an eye?Speaking to anyone,
3:12:45 > 3:12:51that would be the best performance I've ever seen from a lady on this
3:12:51 > 3:12:54ring, she was phenomenal, I was gradual wasn't playing the! She
3:12:54 > 3:12:59would have wiped the floor with me! She said she is coming to the open
3:12:59 > 3:13:02singles. Congratulations, the world number one is through to the
3:13:02 > 3:13:07quarterfinals! We can take a look at the draw and what the result means
3:13:07 > 3:13:12for the last eight. We know that seven players are now through, and
3:13:12 > 3:13:14they are Jason Greenslade, defeating Paul
3:13:14 > 3:13:16they are Jason Greenslade, defeating Paul Foster, the defending champion.
3:13:16 > 3:13:26Darren Burnett, he came through against Jamie Chestney.
3:13:26 > 3:13:31Mervyn King overcame it Nick Brett. Greg Harlow is through, having
3:13:31 > 3:13:34defeated Scott Edwards. He will play Stewart
3:13:34 > 3:13:35defeated Scott Edwards. He will play Stewart Anderson or Wayne Willgress.
3:13:35 > 3:13:39Now, we have time to show you more of what happened in the match this
3:13:39 > 3:13:44morning between Les Gillett and Robert Paxton, the first set was
3:13:44 > 3:13:51tied at 8-8, we join in the second with Les Gillett leading 2-0.
3:14:50 > 3:14:54COMMENTATOR: The same sort of routine every time with Les,
3:14:54 > 3:15:00swinging his arms. Some way to go.
3:15:03 > 3:15:09A really good adjustment...
3:15:18 > 3:15:24A difficult man to shake off, when he is in the zone. He bowls to any
3:15:24 > 3:15:29length.
3:16:11 > 3:16:16He is right on track.
3:16:38 > 3:16:44Rob, on the backhand. He just wants to miss the front red. Slipping
3:16:44 > 3:16:55inside of that... I think that is a second.
3:16:55 > 3:17:02second. No, did not make it. Still only one green.
3:17:03 > 3:17:06only one green. Les may decide to follow that commit using the green
3:17:06 > 3:17:11to come back into the jack. Probably a better shot, didn't want to move
3:17:11 > 3:17:17the jack on the other side and flick it out.A lot of danger here. Really
3:17:17 > 3:17:22is, he has to be so careful.I think the backhand is the better short, at
3:17:22 > 3:17:28this stage. He really doesn't want his jack to be bounced into that
3:17:28 > 3:17:36sort of area. That is where the danger is. It is his last bowl. He
3:17:36 > 3:17:41may try to drop it down...He is only one down at the moment. It is a
3:17:41 > 3:17:47draw, if he is inside of the green on the jack, outside he can cover
3:17:47 > 3:17:57that position.
3:17:57 > 3:18:00that position. He is going for an inside line with some weight. He
3:18:00 > 3:18:04needs to be careful... He is under it.He did not play with much
3:18:04 > 3:18:12confidence.Not a lot of conviction. If he is one down, not very happy,
3:18:12 > 3:18:17to be truthful with you. You can see sometimes with how players play a
3:18:17 > 3:18:18particular bowl, they are not convinced it is the right shot,
3:18:18 > 3:18:24even.
3:18:24 > 3:18:28even.I can see why he used more weight than he wanted. He is afraid
3:18:28 > 3:18:34of bouncing the jack a foot, if he hit the red into the jack he may
3:18:34 > 3:18:38have gone all the way through. This is a difficult one, he has got a
3:18:38 > 3:18:52chance.Not easy to get out inside of the red. If he gets onto the red
3:18:52 > 3:18:55and drops it... That is a good effort. But I do not think it is
3:18:55 > 3:19:05enough.
3:19:06 > 3:19:17A side touch... Just occasionally, you get a very interesting statistic
3:19:17 > 3:19:22going through. Five touches in this match. Every time the person has had
3:19:22 > 3:19:31a touch, he has scored in that end. So...
3:19:31 > 3:19:36So... There are good statistics and very impressive ones. That is a very
3:19:36 > 3:19:41impressive one.
3:19:49 > 3:19:53The secret is to make sure that you get a touch at every end. It is
3:19:53 > 3:19:58easier said than done!Absolutely, no guarantees and you do not get any
3:19:58 > 3:20:07extra points for it.
3:20:07 > 3:20:10extra points for it.You are an anorak! Not me, no credit whatsoever
3:20:10 > 3:20:19from that. There is a special double anorak which has sorted this one out
3:20:19 > 3:20:34for me. Thank you. Much appreciated. Did not quite make it, the head of
3:20:34 > 3:20:37the green bowl...I'm only saying that because you would look through
3:20:37 > 3:20:50again, making sure. I'm sure that somebody would do that.
3:20:56 > 3:21:04A good bowl there.Trying to turn the jack. It could does -- a good
3:21:04 > 3:21:09position.
3:21:11 > 3:21:15position.If you have any questions, send them into us using the hashtag
3:21:15 > 3:21:19BBC bowls. I'm sure that John would be delighted to answer them.Thank
3:21:19 > 3:21:26you for that, David. I haven't got enough to do, keeping you in
3:21:26 > 3:21:34order...!You are in the expert chair! That is how it works. That
3:21:34 > 3:21:50was loose by Les, you would have expected it to be closer.
3:21:50 > 3:21:52expected it to be closer. A chance for Robert to make it difficult, he
3:21:52 > 3:21:59gets really close to the jack.He is trying hard, he is on an outside
3:21:59 > 3:22:09line. Creating a shoulder. Three on the white side apposition rattlers.
3:22:09 > 3:22:18Three green. But it is still there for Les. Do not overthink it, just
3:22:18 > 3:22:25go down and draw it. Could overcomplicate things, but it looks
3:22:25 > 3:22:30like a simple draw to me. I cannot see anything else.He has taken a
3:22:30 > 3:22:37time-out on this. I'm really surprised at this. The front bowl is
3:22:37 > 3:22:44not clever. That he has got available to him. That is where the
3:22:44 > 3:22:48difficulty is. This bowl is sitting in the way. If he plays a runner he
3:22:48 > 3:22:54will come off that. He may get into the head but realistically it looks,
3:22:54 > 3:23:01to you and me, like a draw. You can get on the outside of the bowl.
3:23:01 > 3:23:05Second bowl, changing ahead. He flicks his own way, it could be two
3:23:05 > 3:23:14down. Maybe even three?Keep very -- he may prove us wrong. He is
3:23:14 > 3:23:24drawing.This is all about good weight on the line.He has
3:23:24 > 3:23:32overplayed it again. The right shot. He was a yard too heavy but it was
3:23:32 > 3:23:37the right shot to play at this moment in time. It may be different
3:23:37 > 3:23:44if Robert adds another.Am sure he will want to close this down, if he
3:23:44 > 3:23:53can get into the jack. He would make it very difficult for Les.
3:23:53 > 3:23:55it very difficult for Les. The first end where Les has looked a little
3:23:55 > 3:24:00vulnerable.
3:24:00 > 3:24:04vulnerable.Robert, playing safe and going deep. He reckons Les will have
3:24:04 > 3:24:12a pop at this now. Some clubs in the crowd, the choice is here. Now it's
3:24:12 > 3:24:17a different situation than it was before. Damage limitation could come
3:24:17 > 3:24:29into it. It will be a good draw.It isn't normally Les's game but he is
3:24:29 > 3:24:36going to run this one.On the backhand... Hmm. No.He has changed.
3:24:36 > 3:24:48Beforehand for a running bowl. He took one out. It was a damage
3:24:48 > 3:25:01limitation shop. -- shot.
3:25:18 > 3:25:25It is always good to see a packed crowd in the morning game here at
3:25:25 > 3:25:29the Potters Resort, they normally come in for all sessions, and enjoy
3:25:29 > 3:25:41the resort. It is good for the players too.
3:25:56 > 3:26:00One of those stats you mentioned earlier, about the lead changing in
3:26:00 > 3:26:07the first end.The first set, sorry. Five times. It sums up the game.
3:26:07 > 3:26:13Neither player has total control. It has very much been that kind of
3:26:13 > 3:26:19game. With a lot of conversion shots.
3:26:24 > 3:26:28It is amazing, some of the information you get, with the four
3:26:28 > 3:26:42or five voices I have in my ears. A lot of it is very interesting...
3:26:42 > 3:26:46lot of it is very interesting... Big effort, wide on the line. That has
3:26:46 > 3:26:56happened a few times.
3:27:09 > 3:27:15He has passed it, very good.
3:27:21 > 3:27:29Let's show how good he is the perfect draw shot. -- at the perfect
3:27:29 > 3:27:38draw shot.Robert, looking to reduce...On the front one. Slightly
3:27:38 > 3:27:44off target, that was always a problem. Still, he has a back bowl,
3:27:44 > 3:27:50now.
3:28:09 > 3:28:14He decides to draw again rather than go for the cover. The plant comes
3:28:14 > 3:28:21into the jack. That is exactly what he has done. That is not good. I'm
3:28:21 > 3:28:26surprised at that. I thought he may have played it through the head. You
3:28:26 > 3:28:34almost see the reaction. The jack is going.
3:28:41 > 3:28:47He has taken another time-out, two remaining now.You can see the plant
3:28:47 > 3:28:50going straight in there. Where the jack goes, the Rhys Barker position
3:28:50 > 3:29:01is over here. There is another bowl there. -- the re-spot.That is one
3:29:01 > 3:29:08of the better results, two bowls without a jack.
3:29:14 > 3:29:23He is close...He has got something. Where is the green bowl? Always
3:29:23 > 3:29:31looking for it. That was always a valuable one to have.I do not think
3:29:31 > 3:29:36he would have expected it to go as close to the green bowl. But it was
3:29:36 > 3:29:43a good strike, and he deserves some sort of result of that. A good one.
3:29:43 > 3:29:50One down, the jack there.
3:29:51 > 3:29:54One down, the jack there. No point in trying to draw that, just run the
3:29:54 > 3:29:59bowl off. He has a second shot.
3:29:59 > 3:30:13Playing it.He's close.He got the wall.So close there. Big effort.
3:30:19 > 3:30:35REFEREE:Set score 2-4 after four ends.
3:31:20 > 3:31:22APPLAUSE
3:32:14 > 3:32:24The weight was good again, just stayed away.
3:33:19 > 3:33:25That has come across uncovered a bit of the jack. It is still there for
3:33:25 > 3:33:32him. That's what he's gone for.
3:33:41 > 3:33:47Not a great end for Les Gillett.No, dropping through, and it's probably
3:33:47 > 3:33:55his worst end. Not the time to do it when you're 4-2 down. He's leaving
3:33:55 > 3:34:02himself in a difficult situation. If he did draw in for another shot and
3:34:02 > 3:34:07Les decided to have a little gamble, green ball into jack he has nothing
3:34:07 > 3:34:13at the back.It looks like it has to be a back cover even at two feet
3:34:13 > 3:34:23behind the jack Hunter the Red Bull would be good -- onto the red ball
3:34:23 > 3:34:28would be good. He was listening.I think he had to play that really, he
3:34:28 > 3:34:31couldn't take the risk.
3:34:45 > 3:34:50He doesn't want to lose twos and threes that far away from the jack
3:34:50 > 3:34:55but he's given this a chance for a number one.
3:34:55 > 3:35:03APPLAUSE
3:35:16 > 3:35:23Little bit of daylight therefore Robert Paxton. We have been getting
3:35:23 > 3:35:27some tweets in. Pauline Jacobs as King: two drum sets, how often does
3:35:27 > 3:35:33that happen? It is rare.It has happened on occasions, doesn't
3:35:33 > 3:35:40happen to Aston. -- as King: two drawn sets. We had a tie-breaker
3:35:40 > 3:35:47when it was one end each and we had a third tie-break end and went to a
3:35:47 > 3:35:52shoot out. That is very rare.I think you were involved in that.I
3:35:52 > 3:36:05was.They don't happen often. They are very rare but they can happen.
3:36:54 > 3:36:59Always the concern whenever you miss with your first bowl on a couple of
3:36:59 > 3:37:06ends. There are so much importance on the first delivery to put the
3:37:06 > 3:37:13pressure on your opponent.
3:37:13 > 3:37:25Disappointed with that last bowl. He thought it was better.
3:37:25 > 3:37:29thought it was better. It is a bit inside line.Struggling as well.
3:37:29 > 3:37:39Goodness me. Two ends in a row where Les is three feet away from the jack
3:37:39 > 3:37:44on the first two deliveries and Robert gets one right on this. Les
3:37:44 > 3:37:52is in a whole heap of trouble.
3:38:08 > 3:38:15APPLAUSE
3:38:22 > 3:38:29Rob knows he is laying three but they are not close enough. You'd
3:38:29 > 3:38:34expect Les to draw this. His last leg form was good enough to draw
3:38:34 > 3:38:38this. He's had a few loose deliveries. He didn't look terribly
3:38:38 > 3:38:45happy with that one.No, he didn't. I think he's better.A lot better.
3:38:45 > 3:38:50That is more of an indication he wasn't quite sure what he was doing
3:38:50 > 3:38:56on that end. That it will be a worry for him. He didn't think it was
3:38:56 > 3:38:59getting there.He couldn't have played it any better. He certainly
3:38:59 > 3:39:03needed it.
3:39:23 > 3:39:34He has overplayed it. Very good single shot for Les. He needs to be
3:39:34 > 3:39:40a little bit careful of the jack where it is sitting.Safer if Les
3:39:40 > 3:39:47chose the other side really.
3:39:47 > 3:39:55chose the other side really. He has his hand out. He's confident now.
3:39:55 > 3:40:02Wider lines, he's going to drop back around the jack, will it fall in?
3:40:02 > 3:40:16Doesn't need to, that's about right. Robert just couldn't put that end to
3:40:16 > 3:40:20bed really. That was the problem, he had a chance of the first couple of
3:40:20 > 3:40:25bowls but he couldn't close it down. There will be one out and they will
3:40:25 > 3:40:29look at the second. They will see what happens on the measure.Where
3:40:29 > 3:40:38is your money on that one?Slightly favour the red. Les Gillett, now 47,
3:40:38 > 3:40:42the last 20 years have been full of international experience at the top
3:40:42 > 3:40:50level. A family man, married to Sadie, three kids, Millie, Eliza and
3:40:50 > 3:40:54Jessica. No doubt they are recording this to be watched later. Dad is
3:40:54 > 3:41:01doing well.
3:41:01 > 3:41:07doing well. Good sense of humour, Les Gillett. Quite funny when
3:41:07 > 3:41:15sitting down for a meal or something with him. He is a very relaxed guy.
3:41:15 > 3:41:27It is a double. It looked like it. And he needed it as well.Yeah, it
3:41:27 > 3:41:33gets him right back in the set.
3:42:25 > 3:42:29Les will know he will need to get a bit closer with that first ball, the
3:42:29 > 3:42:33last couple of ends he was very good early in the match but the last few
3:42:33 > 3:42:37ends he is slipping a bit and giving Robert a couple of chances. Robert
3:42:37 > 3:42:45hasn't taken advantage.
3:43:10 > 3:43:17Still a bit of room there.
3:43:41 > 3:43:46Is it getting a little bit edgy out there? It is getting a bit tense,
3:43:46 > 3:43:53isn't it? It's the seventh end and he really wants to win this one.Not
3:43:53 > 3:43:58far off, but it's two and a half feet, it could cost you two or three
3:43:58 > 3:44:08if you don't get inside that. He's not reaching.Dear oh dear, Les. A
3:44:08 > 3:44:12little touch on that and he was making three. Not the time to be
3:44:12 > 3:44:17short. He needs to secure a really good single. The shake of the head.
3:44:17 > 3:44:26He realised that was a great chance. Robert will expect Les to be closer
3:44:26 > 3:44:38with his last bowl. He wants this one really close.
3:44:38 > 3:44:46one really close.Well, just about made it. It's closer but you'd still
3:44:46 > 3:44:53expect Les to draw and get the shot. He needs a good one here. He can't
3:44:53 > 3:44:57afford to be loose with this. He could end up dropping a treble.
3:44:57 > 3:45:02Three shops at this stage would not be good.My goodness, he's gone on
3:45:02 > 3:45:08to the back. That's interesting. That is a hard thing to do. It's
3:45:08 > 3:45:15quite easy to fall short on this side.That's what he's done.You see
3:45:15 > 3:45:23that so often. You just move on to the other side and it just pulls up
3:45:23 > 3:45:33three or four feet. There was no reason to change. He had a wonderful
3:45:33 > 3:45:40opportunity to get in on the open side.
3:45:40 > 3:45:47side. The man who could play that really well, the great David Brand,
3:45:47 > 3:45:53very adept at changing his hand. What has been notable from this
3:45:53 > 3:45:56direction on the commentary box when you move onto the other side you are
3:45:56 > 3:46:03more likely to drop short. This is potentially a match and for Robert
3:46:03 > 3:46:15Paxton. -- match end.This is a big opportunity.If he clears his own
3:46:15 > 3:46:21bowl he could bend in. He was too heavy with that. That is a shocker.
3:46:21 > 3:46:31He knows it.Both players. It is two out. If it's only two command we
3:46:31 > 3:46:38think it is only two, Les is still in with a chance. Robert's target
3:46:38 > 3:46:41should have been inside the green ball to the Red Bull and drop it out
3:46:41 > 3:46:53for four.It was a dead weight, just needed to make it count -- the red
3:46:53 > 3:46:58ball. Wasn't a great end by either player. Probably the worst end of
3:46:58 > 3:47:04the match. You can't keep the standard up all the time, you will
3:47:04 > 3:47:09always have the odd
3:47:10 > 3:47:13always have the odd one like that. It's been a high-quality game and
3:47:13 > 3:47:17when there is a loose end you want to lose only one and not two or
3:47:17 > 3:47:24three.Les will know that was not the time to play it.
3:47:24 > 3:47:31the time to play it.I don't think this red ball is in contention. The
3:47:31 > 3:47:38other red ball is a different matter.
3:47:42 > 3:47:48He didn't even go down there. You get the impression that the measure
3:47:48 > 3:47:58is comfortable.Two shots, Robert Paxton.That could be even worse for
3:47:58 > 3:48:11Les. That's a pretty bad and isn't it? -- pretty bad end. 7-4, Les
3:48:11 > 3:48:23needs is single and double to force the tie-break.
3:49:31 > 3:49:36Once again Les and not getting that first ball in, just struggling a
3:49:36 > 3:49:42little bit. Just a few ends in the latter part of the set where he just
3:49:42 > 3:49:46hasn't been as prolific as he was in the first set. He's fallen away at
3:49:46 > 3:49:52the wrong time here and Robert realises this and he needs to try
3:49:52 > 3:49:58and pile the pressure on.
3:49:58 > 3:50:07and pile the pressure on. Just out of Les's reach.
3:50:20 > 3:50:27Will he run again?
3:50:27 > 3:50:33Never looks like getting there.
3:50:41 > 3:50:57Robert Paxton has a big chance to put Les in even more trouble here.
3:50:57 > 3:51:00He just lost his way a little bit and Robert pulled up on that one, he
3:51:00 > 3:51:05was down to four microseconds. REFEREE:Robert has no time-outs
3:51:05 > 3:51:11remaining.
3:51:11 > 3:51:18remaining. -- four seconds.
3:51:25 > 3:51:31Nice safe white line, doesn't want to move the Reds, it is getting in
3:51:31 > 3:51:37there, it needs to drop over towards the jack.
3:51:37 > 3:51:40APPLAUSE Les's natural game is to draw things
3:51:40 > 3:51:49off, but it's been a bit of a struggle.
3:51:49 > 3:51:51struggle. It would be worth trying to push into this one, he is going
3:51:51 > 3:51:59on his forehand, he's going heavy. That was a really good strike but an
3:51:59 > 3:52:04unlucky result, he got the edge of the jack and pushed it towards the
3:52:04 > 3:52:19green ball. Really good hit, though. Les has touched it into the ditch.
3:52:19 > 3:52:24Even so Robert must try and kill the game off and score a double on this
3:52:24 > 3:52:31end. He must really try very hard to get this right.
3:52:31 > 3:52:33get this right. You can see he doesn't want to leave the green ball
3:52:33 > 3:52:41on its own. Neisse line, get past the front reds. He's played this
3:52:41 > 3:52:45world, if he can get it to turn on the jack that would be very good.
3:52:45 > 3:52:51Very good.I'm not sure you could ask for more than that, he played
3:52:51 > 3:52:54the right ball at the right time to close the match off and get a place
3:52:54 > 3:53:04in the final. It's been a tough game.He played that really well.
3:53:04 > 3:53:10So, Les will look to hit this now on his forehand. He has a really good
3:53:10 > 3:53:15drive. Looks under, has he got something? No.
3:53:15 > 3:53:23APPLAUSE
3:53:24 > 3:53:29That was a fascinating game, no doubt. Real quality throughout. Les
3:53:29 > 3:53:36Gillett and Robert Paxton toe to toe in the first set, 8-8, magnificent
3:53:36 > 3:53:42to watch, but Les Gillett just went off the boil in the second set.
3:53:42 > 3:53:48Robert Paxton took over and eased his way into a 9-4 and takes the
3:53:48 > 3:53:53match. One a half.
3:53:55 > 3:53:55Robert Paxton
3:53:55 > 3:53:58Robert Paxton runner-up in 2016 through to the quarterfinals once
3:53:58 > 3:54:03again. This is how the draw looks now. Jason Greenslade who defeated
3:54:03 > 3:54:07the defending champion. Paul Foster in the previous round. Faces former
3:54:07 > 3:54:11champion again in Darren Burnett. Mark Dawes up
3:54:11 > 3:54:13champion again in Darren Burnett. Mark Dawes up against Mark Royal and
3:54:13 > 3:54:16former champion Mervyn King up against Robert Paxton and we still
3:54:16 > 3:54:19await one result and the winner of that match will play Greg Harlow.
3:54:19 > 3:54:24That match between Stewart Anderson and Willgress is going to be on the
3:54:24 > 3:54:29BBC website tonight from 7:30pm. We have also got highlights of all of
3:54:29 > 3:54:38those they's action from 12:15am on BBC Two. -- all of the day's action.
3:54:38 > 3:54:41We're back at 10am on Friday for the first of the quarterfinals between
3:54:41 > 3:54:49Mark Dawes and Mark Royal. And then on BBC Two at 1pm for Greenslade
3:54:49 > 3:54:56against Darren Burnett and Willgress against Greg Harlow. And when we are
3:54:56 > 3:55:00finished on BBC Two there will be highlights of the Australian Open
3:55:00 > 3:55:05tennis featuring the match between Marin Cilic and Kyle Edmund.
3:55:05 > 3:55:05tennis featuring the match between Marin Cilic and Kyle Edmund.
3:55:06 > 3:55:09Delighted to say that in between myself and Korkie we have the
3:55:09 > 3:55:12three-time ladies single champion Katherine Rednall with her
3:55:12 > 3:55:17resplendent Trophy. Catherine, you've had a bit more time to let
3:55:17 > 3:55:21things sink in now. What sort of emotions are you feeling at this
3:55:21 > 3:55:26moment?It hasn't really sunk in yet, it will take a couple of days
3:55:26 > 3:55:31to feel that I've won it again. Over the moon.Just before we started
3:55:31 > 3:55:35chatting to you you said you are not feeling great and feel like you have
3:55:35 > 3:55:42the flu.I don't feel great, but a cold coming on morning so I'm just
3:55:42 > 3:55:44hanging on.Extraordinary, considering how well she played.
3:55:44 > 3:55:48Probably why she wanted it over so quickly. And why she didn't want the
3:55:48 > 3:55:51interview at the end. Callous about the match because we spoke in the
3:55:51 > 3:55:54aftermath and before the match about the importance of getting in early
3:55:54 > 3:55:58and you seemed to do that from almost the moment you stepped on the
3:55:58 > 3:56:02rink.Yes, it was always on the back of my mind that my first two bowls
3:56:02 > 3:56:06against Rebecca had to be good because if they are not she would
3:56:06 > 3:56:09get right on top of me and get in there before me. I really nailed
3:56:09 > 3:56:14that today.Watching from the commentary box what was your
3:56:14 > 3:56:19assessment at this point? It was almost an exhibition, it really was.
3:56:19 > 3:56:24I did say Katherine was getting a free run but sometimes that plays
3:56:24 > 3:56:29against you if your opponent isn't playing well and you drop your form
3:56:29 > 3:56:34and your game gets scrappy but Katherine kept her standard going,
3:56:34 > 3:56:39and it was only on one end when Katherine missed and lost a four but
3:56:39 > 3:56:45the rest of the game she had two or three and even four.Lovely moment
3:56:45 > 3:56:49at the end, you won impressively but it was difficult for Rebecca, but
3:56:49 > 3:56:53you were consoling her at the end. It must have been a strange
3:56:53 > 3:56:57dichotomy for you to have to play brilliantly but also play
3:56:57 > 3:57:01brilliantly against someone you care so much about.I know, I went into
3:57:01 > 3:57:06it thinking we are good friends of the green but both professional when
3:57:06 > 3:57:09we go on the green so it would have been as if we were playing on the
3:57:09 > 3:57:16one else really. It wasn't pleasant to be on top of Rebecca as much as I
3:57:16 > 3:57:20was today -- as if we were playing anyone else. I didn't really feel I
3:57:20 > 3:57:24let her in much at all.Greg Harlow said afterwards that is one of the
3:57:24 > 3:57:29finest performances ever seen from a lady on a blue rink, that's quite a
3:57:29 > 3:57:32statement.Yes it is and he's absolutely right. I've been here for
3:57:32 > 3:57:36all of them. When you go into a final there is only one fear and
3:57:36 > 3:57:40that is of not performing. It is not about winning the actual
3:57:40 > 3:57:44championship, you are not worried about that, you are worried about
3:57:44 > 3:57:47the fear. Unfortunately it is just one of those things for Rebecca who
3:57:47 > 3:57:50just had a bad day but that happens and should be back next year. What
3:57:50 > 3:57:54are you going to do is to celebrate tonight?I'm going to go home and
3:57:54 > 3:57:58have a gin and tonic when I get home, because I've got to drive so
3:57:58 > 3:58:02I've been on Diet Coke or afternoon and back to university next week.
3:58:02 > 3:58:06Many congratulations from all of us today. It was a real privilege to
3:58:06 > 3:58:10watch you in action, superb performance from Katherine Rednall
3:58:10 > 3:58:13at patas means she is the ladies single champion for the third time
3:58:13 > 3:58:20in her career. From all of us here, bye bye.
