0:00:37 > 0:00:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Hello everyone. Welcome to the start
0:00:41 > 0:00:47of the BBC's coverage of the World Indoor Bowls Championships at the
0:00:47 > 0:00:51Potter's Resort in Great Yarmouth. This is the 20th time that it is
0:00:51 > 0:00:56held here at Potters. There are four major trophies up for grabs this
0:00:56 > 0:01:01week. When you look through the Roll of Honour, the singles in particular
0:01:01 > 0:01:13reminds us of a time when things were done a little bit differently.
0:01:13 > 0:01:22So David Bryant has won a really remarkable game. There it is. David
0:01:22 > 0:01:28Bryant champion in 1979 and champion again in 1980.He needs to have a
0:01:28 > 0:01:34bowl of his life here.He has missed and David Bryant is the world
0:01:34 > 0:01:47champion.He's very close. Did he fall in? Yes, he fell in, and
0:01:47 > 0:01:53touched the jack. That was an amazing last bowl from Phil
0:01:53 > 0:02:02Scotland.Hugh Duff has three shots. It depends on this bowl. It's all
0:02:02 > 0:02:08over. A quite marvellous display of bowling by this 24-year-old, the
0:02:08 > 0:02:17youngest ever world singles champion indoor or out.And Price behind the
0:02:17 > 0:02:24screen daren't look. This is to save the championship.
0:02:26 > 0:02:31screen daren't look. This is to save the championship. The shot to John
0:02:31 > 0:02:39Price. The stadium erupts and the celebration begin.
0:02:39 > 0:02:45celebration begin. -- celebrations begin. No, it's not a kangaroo, it
0:02:45 > 0:02:51is Ian. He is the world champion at last. He takes the world title for
0:02:51 > 0:02:56the very first time.He is going to strike the bowl off for the
0:02:56 > 0:03:04championship. Got it! What a way to win the world title for the third
0:03:04 > 0:03:14time. And Andy Thompson jumped a mile high and the unseeded junior
0:03:14 > 0:03:21beats the 1988 world indoor champion, Hugh Duff a standing
0:03:21 > 0:03:29ovation and don't they deserve it? And all the fingers are crossed here
0:03:29 > 0:03:37as he attempts to save the match. He's overweight. The new champion of
0:03:37 > 0:03:41the world. Look at that smile. APPLAUSE
0:03:41 > 0:03:55He takes the title for fifth time. He has just made history once again.
0:03:57 > 0:04:01Well, the head in the hands for Stewart Anderson. The emotion has
0:04:01 > 0:04:12just hit him. He is now the 2013 world champion. The marshal Alex
0:04:12 > 0:04:20lifts his hand and he is the best in the world.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24the world. The world indoors singles champion, Nicky Brett.
0:04:24 > 0:04:32COMMENTATOR: His fifth title. That's what he was looking for.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36Wonderful memories of many of the game's great players and Paul Foster
0:04:36 > 0:04:41is back to defend his title. We have got the final of the pairs coming up
0:04:41 > 0:04:46live on BBC Two this afternoon, but we're going to bring you news of
0:04:46 > 0:04:55what is happening in the first round of the singles. Paul Foster is
0:04:55 > 0:05:03playing Lea Blackham later on this afternoon.
0:05:19 > 0:05:24Scott Edwards is also through. At the bottom of the list you would
0:05:24 > 0:05:30have seen the match between Greg Harlow and Martin Puckett and we
0:05:30 > 0:05:40will bring you news of what happened in that match. This was
0:05:40 > 0:05:42in that match. This was a battle of the generations. The early exchanges
0:05:42 > 0:05:48were marked by high quality draw shots from both players. Harlow made
0:05:48 > 0:06:01the early running, but it was Puckett who took the first set, 7-6.
0:06:07 > 0:06:14Puckett was runner-up in last year's semifinal. This brave shot looked
0:06:14 > 0:06:23enough to salvage something from a seemingly hopeless position.
0:06:25 > 0:06:26APPLAUSE But Harlow making his 21st
0:06:26 > 0:06:30appearance in the world singles was matching him blow for blow, playing
0:06:30 > 0:06:33in the first of two matches today, he'll team up with Nick Brett in the
0:06:33 > 0:06:37final of the pairs this afternoon. This beautiful reply gave him a
0:06:37 > 0:06:43single to extend the lead.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48single to extend the lead. Harlow went on to take the second set 9-4.
0:06:48 > 0:06:56So into the best of three tie-break and Puck et took on this drive. His
0:06:56 > 0:07:02last end perfectly judged for the early advantage. It was Harlow's
0:07:02 > 0:07:12turn to produce a brilliant weighted shot.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15shot. A great strike and a perfect outcome to leave him lying shot and
0:07:15 > 0:07:22back on level terms. APPLAUSE
0:07:22 > 0:07:29And Harlow turned the screw in the last end leaving Puckeett needing to
0:07:29 > 0:07:35make a difficult backhand shot.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41make a difficult backhand shot. It wasn't to be and the dream was over
0:07:41 > 0:07:45for the young pretender. Harlow through to the second round where
0:07:45 > 0:07:55Scott Edwards awaits.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03APPLAUSE And so this is how it looks for the
0:08:03 > 0:08:07second round:
0:08:25 > 0:08:28Alongside me two men who will be doing the commentary for the BBC
0:08:28 > 0:08:31throughout the week, David Corkhill, who is the voice of BBC bowls,
0:08:31 > 0:08:35alongside a former champion, John Price. John, we're going to stay
0:08:35 > 0:08:38with you because when we were looking through the great memories
0:08:38 > 0:08:42we saw some wonderful shots of a young John Price if you don't mind
0:08:42 > 0:08:48me saying! 1990, 28 years ago. Exactly. The hair was a bit browner
0:08:48 > 0:08:54then. I think it was a bit thinner as well.Tell us about this moment
0:08:54 > 0:09:01because you couldn't seen bear to look?No, this was nerve-wracking.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05You could never say you had him. The last bowl was coming down and I
0:09:05 > 0:09:09didn't want to look because I thought I might have to play another
0:09:09 > 0:09:14end. It was a great moment and it lives long in the memory. How old
0:09:14 > 0:09:17were you Corky?Primary school! LAUGHTER
0:09:17 > 0:09:22Yeah, sure. Were you commentating on this one?I might have been
0:09:22 > 0:09:25actually. It was so long ago, I don't think so, but I might have
0:09:25 > 0:09:28been.What did this moment mean to you, John?Everything because at the
0:09:28 > 0:09:34time I had been close a few times. To win this was just a magic moment
0:09:34 > 0:09:40and all the family were there and just a great, great evening and we
0:09:40 > 0:09:44had a few Welsh hymns in the bar after. To find your name on that
0:09:44 > 0:09:55Roll of Honour with so many great players. Now look look back and talk
0:09:55 > 0:09:59about the great names. It was a privilege to be there and to be part
0:09:59 > 0:10:03of it.Looking ahead to what we've got Corky and we've lost a couple of
0:10:03 > 0:10:09the big names. Alex Marshal along with Andy Tom sob ch son, but it
0:10:09 > 0:10:13always signifies some fresh blood coming through. We see on the match
0:10:13 > 0:10:16this morning where Martin was superb. He was a different player
0:10:16 > 0:10:20than what he was last year when he was here in the under-25s and he
0:10:20 > 0:10:24pushed Greg all the way and as a performance goes, Martin was just
0:10:24 > 0:10:30standing, but as you said in your interview, it is about getting over
0:10:30 > 0:10:32the line and great champions get over the line.John, David, thank
0:10:32 > 0:10:36you very much. We'll move on because we will start focussing now on the
0:10:36 > 0:10:40final of the pairs which is about to take place on the blue ring today
0:10:40 > 0:10:51and it is an all England line up. It features John features Jamie
0:10:51 > 0:10:56Chesters and Mark Dawes. So let's hear from the four
0:10:56 > 0:11:06finalists who are focussing on partnerships.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08partnerships.Obviously at moment we're ranked one and two in the
0:11:08 > 0:11:14world. O So quite rightly we should be a good pair and we are, but it is
0:11:14 > 0:11:21not about playing good bowls, it is about gelling together and
0:11:21 > 0:11:24understanding each other's shot play. And tactically, we've always
0:11:24 > 0:11:29seen it together the same way so win or lose, we'll know for us, we've
0:11:29 > 0:11:36played the right shot or four games. That's my touch. I went to play with
0:11:36 > 0:11:39Greg when I was, when we were both younger if you like and he has
0:11:39 > 0:11:44taught me a lot in the game. How to go on during the game and off the
0:11:44 > 0:11:50field if you like. He's pretty calm which is good playing with someone
0:11:50 > 0:11:55with red hair!I would say my biggest strength is calming Nick
0:11:55 > 0:11:59down.That's probably the one thing that's worked all the way through
0:11:59 > 0:12:03our playing relationship. So yeah, it is pretty easy for us to play
0:12:03 > 0:12:08together and pretty easy for us to sit-in the bar together or coffee
0:12:08 > 0:12:17shop, whichever way you want to sit...Coffee shop, bar.Both of
0:12:17 > 0:12:21them are great players. Good friends as well which probably makes it a
0:12:21 > 0:12:25little bit easier, but me and Jamie know it is difficult playing against
0:12:25 > 0:12:28two great players and hopefully we can put them under pressure and see
0:12:28 > 0:12:33if we can get the victory. The thing with today we're all sort of the
0:12:33 > 0:12:36four of us probably really good friends as well so there is not
0:12:36 > 0:12:40going to be any surprises when it comes to shots or anything like
0:12:40 > 0:12:43that. We're pretty much going to know what the opposition are going
0:12:43 > 0:12:49to try to do. It is whoever can execute it better on the day.I
0:12:49 > 0:12:55don't think there is any particular strategy. We all know each other's
0:12:55 > 0:13:03games and hopefully we can play better on the day.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06better on the day. Forget snooker and darcts let's play some bowls! It
0:13:06 > 0:13:24should be a high quality match. This is the route to the final:
0:13:27 > 0:13:32So we're just about all set. So it's time to hand over to our MC, Richard
0:13:32 > 0:13:39who will be introduce the players. There is an air of anticipation and
0:13:39 > 0:13:43excitement here in the International Arena because we are about to play
0:13:43 > 0:13:49our very first final of this just world indoor Bowles championships.
0:13:49 > 0:13:54The crowd are ready. The players are ready. So let's get them on to this
0:13:54 > 0:13:59famous blue carpet. First up, two stars who have secured their place
0:13:59 > 0:14:02in the world's top 16, last year's semi-finalist and hoping this year
0:14:02 > 0:14:12to go all the way,
0:14:13 > 0:14:20to go all the way, give tip for Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes.
0:14:20 > 0:14:28Plus
0:14:29 > 0:14:32APPLAUSE And now two of the most formidable
0:14:32 > 0:14:36and respected players on the circuit. Hoping to recreate the
0:14:36 > 0:14:44magic they had in this final four years ago. It is the 2014 world
0:14:44 > 0:14:53indoor pairs champion Nick Brett and Greg Harlow.
0:14:56 > 0:15:06APPLAUSE There is a really good atmosphere
0:15:06 > 0:15:10inside the auditorium. Meanwhile Corky and Pricey are standing by in
0:15:10 > 0:15:14the commentary box. This should be a cracker.
0:15:14 > 0:15:15the commentary box. This should be a cracker.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Rishi. There is no doubt about it, you couldn't
0:15:19 > 0:15:25ask for a better final. Combination work does Jamie Chestney, he played
0:15:25 > 0:15:29very well in this event and in particular Jamie Chestney with the
0:15:29 > 0:15:35big bowls. He played some superb last deliveries and a memory of Mark
0:15:35 > 0:15:41Dawes running down the rink to celebrate and congratulate him. But
0:15:41 > 0:15:45they're really up against this world number one and number two and
0:15:45 > 0:15:53previous champions. It's going to be a very difficult one to overcome.
0:15:59 > 0:16:05But we are all hoping for a great game, went we, John?I'm sure we'll
0:16:05 > 0:16:13get one. There is lots of quality on the rink.A slight change, of
0:16:13 > 0:16:18course, to the pairs. We've got an extra bowl now. It's three bowls
0:16:18 > 0:16:27each. Previously it was two bowls. And of course, it is nine ends not
0:16:27 > 0:16:3111 ends. A little change there because we've got more bowls. The
0:16:31 > 0:16:35previous matches have all been over seven.
0:16:35 > 0:16:40And my good colleague here John Price will keep me right if I make
0:16:40 > 0:16:44anything that happens to be a mistake, John you'll correct me, I
0:16:44 > 0:16:49know you will.I'll pull you out Dave. I've got my notes and
0:16:49 > 0:16:54homework.Yes, it has all been done on the back of a postage stamp as
0:16:54 > 0:16:58usual.You made a good point at the start, it is three ball pairs and it
0:16:58 > 0:17:03is a change from the old days when two bowls was a demanding game. You
0:17:03 > 0:17:06have got a chance to play yourself into form and there is more shot
0:17:06 > 0:17:11plays. It is more interesting for the spectators.Absolutely. It's
0:17:11 > 0:17:16going to create opportunities. Probably more discussion as well,
0:17:16 > 0:17:20John, I think, the games, although they are a couple of ends shorter
0:17:20 > 0:17:23they are turning out to be longer, not much, just a little bit
0:17:23 > 0:17:26depending on what happens, but we still have the three end tie-break
0:17:26 > 0:17:36to separate the pairs. APPLAUSE
0:17:36 > 0:17:52An impressive start there. Greg, last bowl of the leads.
0:17:59 > 0:18:03It is Nicky and Greg's ability to play the weight shot. A little bit
0:18:03 > 0:18:08unlucky the jack didn't come out. Yeah, it was a good strike. Nine
0:18:08 > 0:18:14times out of ten that jack would have moved.
0:18:19 > 0:18:23have moved. Quite unusual not to see Nicky not playing back end in this
0:18:23 > 0:18:26partnership. Greg would have skipped and Nicky would have been the lead
0:18:26 > 0:18:34man.Yes, although it was styles of play, of course, Nicky Brett very,
0:18:34 > 0:18:38very good at the conversion shot and of course, Greg is too. So, it is a
0:18:38 > 0:18:47bit of a toss up who plays leading skip, but Mark Dawes was recognised
0:18:47 > 0:18:52as an international lead for a long time. He has moved down the league,
0:18:52 > 0:18:56but a very good drawer.Yes, made his name for England as a top class
0:18:56 > 0:19:01lead. Mark got a background, of course, he comes from the Blackpool
0:19:01 > 0:19:13area.Very much so.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21I remember David from up there. Some Crown Green players have been very
0:19:21 > 0:19:26good.
0:19:26 > 0:19:39good. Noel Burrows is another one. He favours the fore hand.
0:19:42 > 0:19:48That was the danger, wasn't it, John?Yes, very unfortunate. Good
0:19:48 > 0:19:55weight if he got past the green. Just tumble it over. That's why I
0:19:55 > 0:20:03thought he would have played the backhand.
0:20:04 > 0:20:10It's backhand for Nicky definitely. Just reach that red bowl behind the
0:20:10 > 0:20:22jack. He's very close, isn't he?
0:20:22 > 0:20:32APPLAUSE Another one in. It's a good third.
0:20:32 > 0:20:35Another one in. It's a good third.I have got to say, it's a good bowl
0:20:35 > 0:20:39that's just rested on the green. There is still a shot for Jamie off
0:20:39 > 0:20:45his own bowl there on the fore hand. That's what he's looking at.He is
0:20:45 > 0:20:50looking at all sorts of angles, isn't he? He seemed to be looking
0:20:50 > 0:20:55inside. I can't really see how the angle would work.He is looking at a
0:20:55 > 0:20:59few things. If I plays firm weight this, he could get the green on to
0:20:59 > 0:21:02the red and get a result, but that bowl at 11 o'clock, he could get off
0:21:02 > 0:21:12that into the green short bowl. Playing weight.Well, this is a bit
0:21:12 > 0:21:17speculative.
0:21:17 > 0:21:24speculative. Well, he certainly bounced the jack outment I'm not
0:21:24 > 0:21:29sure whose line is the shot.He was looking at that angle and it worked
0:21:29 > 0:21:34out quite well, but I'm not sure he made the shot. It's a running bowl,
0:21:34 > 0:21:42not a full drive. Quite good at that, Jamie. He, he has converted it
0:21:42 > 0:21:54back to the red. So had to rely on a little bit of luck. But in the area.
0:22:03 > 0:22:08Oh, just got it wrong. Did nudge of the green bowl though. I wonder if
0:22:08 > 0:22:15that has made a difference? Greg is having a very, if you are
0:22:15 > 0:22:23looking at it that way, Greg, get the umpire out. It did give a it a
0:22:23 > 0:22:27little nudge and it is resting against the other green bowl so that
0:22:27 > 0:22:35will stay where it is.
0:22:45 > 0:22:49Well, Mark Dawes has got the mat in his hand so he must favour that he's
0:22:49 > 0:22:59got the shot. Alan Thornhill was sorted out. Goodness, that is close.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03Senior marker Alan Thornhill. He has been on the circuit now for a few
0:23:03 > 0:23:08years.
0:23:18 > 0:23:26UMPIRE:One shot, Chestney and Dawes.
0:23:40 > 0:23:47The marker is Dan Blewitt. Another experienced World Bowls Tour
0:23:47 > 0:23:54official.
0:24:00 > 0:24:09Slight movement there. Greg pulls out on the delivery.
0:24:10 > 0:24:12out on the delivery. Very simple action, Greg Harlow. Always been the
0:24:12 > 0:24:18same. Not a lot can go wrong with this delivery action. No, it is very
0:24:18 > 0:24:27easy. No shot clock, of course, in the pairs. But the leads are not
0:24:27 > 0:24:35allowed to come up to the head after the jack.
0:24:35 > 0:24:39the jack. Until they have completed all their bowls. It keeps the game
0:24:39 > 0:24:50moving. I think that's the idea. APPLAUSE
0:24:57 > 0:25:01I think it's fair to say, it is not so much getting the shot with the
0:25:01 > 0:25:04lead players, David, it is about getting position for your skip,
0:25:04 > 0:25:08isn't it? Sometimes you can be one down, but in a very good position,
0:25:08 > 0:25:12so it is about getting bowls around the head.Yes, that really applies,
0:25:12 > 0:25:17I think, when you get into the disciplines of pairs, triples and
0:25:17 > 0:25:21fours. It is not always about getting the shot, as you say, John,
0:25:21 > 0:25:24it is about offering up the opportunity for your skip to play
0:25:24 > 0:25:34something. Something that by-passes a lot of people. The front send a
0:25:34 > 0:25:37protector as well. So you really have a choice here. You get
0:25:37 > 0:25:44something close or you try and remove the front two bowls. So Greg
0:25:44 > 0:25:48is playing the weight shot and trying to get into the front two
0:25:48 > 0:25:53bowls to open them up. There we go. Now, Nicky will be very happy with
0:25:53 > 0:26:02that. He's still two shots down, but he'll be very happy with it.
0:26:15 > 0:26:19The beauty about having someone like Greg playing lead, he has the
0:26:19 > 0:26:23capability of playing another shot if you're in trouble. It is an
0:26:23 > 0:26:26interesting change to the three bowls after all the years of two.
0:26:26 > 0:26:30The jury is out on it. Some players like it. Some don't. It adds an
0:26:30 > 0:26:33awful lot to the game in terms of shot play, but some might say it
0:26:33 > 0:26:39takes the purity away of the two bowls.Yes, of course, back home we
0:26:39 > 0:26:43normally play four-ball pairs in the national, David.It is too many. I
0:26:43 > 0:26:48think that needs to be changed. We need to move forward. Three bowls is
0:26:48 > 0:26:55the way forward. The chances of that happening, at club and national
0:26:55 > 0:27:03level, probably zero, but anyway. Nicky on the attack. Oh, that was
0:27:03 > 0:27:09unlucky. That was a horrible result. Well, it's a good hit anyway. He
0:27:09 > 0:27:14changed the lie of those balls. It will give him a chance with his next
0:27:14 > 0:27:19delivery.
0:27:38 > 0:27:42Just a little bit wider on the target. Won't change Nicky. He will
0:27:42 > 0:27:52be after this.
0:27:53 > 0:27:59Well again, it's a very bad result. Yes, he wanted movement on the jack.
0:27:59 > 0:28:05It is a rueful smile because he realised that the gap just didn't
0:28:05 > 0:28:08appear to be there. It was big enough for a bowl to go through and
0:28:08 > 0:28:12it must be at least five inches wide for that to happen.Jamie might be
0:28:12 > 0:28:19tempted to go past here. There is a couple of red bowls near the ditch.
0:28:19 > 0:28:24The back bowl might be the order of the day.At the same time he will be
0:28:24 > 0:28:31thinking well, if I can block Nicky, I'm 9-3, he's going on the other
0:28:31 > 0:28:34side for the green bowls, John and he has covered that.I thought he
0:28:34 > 0:28:40might just in case.It all depends where the jack goes. Oh, has it
0:28:40 > 0:28:47stopped in time?
0:28:48 > 0:28:51stopped in time? I think he'll go again because two reds out, jack
0:28:51 > 0:29:00through, follow through, might lose one, but probably no more.
0:29:02 > 0:29:08one, but probably no more.An expectant crowd. Going again. Close.
0:29:08 > 0:29:19Two bowls. There it goes. He will be happy to get it down to a single.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22UMPIRE:One shot, Chestney and Dawes.
0:29:22 > 0:29:32APPLAUSE
0:29:56 > 0:30:05UMPIRE:Jack length, 29 meters.
0:30:10 > 0:30:17A very good opener from Mark Dawes.
0:30:35 > 0:30:42Back. The further the better now. A bowl short.
0:31:04 > 0:31:12Great shot. Well done, well done. Great shot. Those situations always
0:31:12 > 0:31:19beneficial.
0:31:25 > 0:31:38Right up now. And again. And again. And again. Yes, good. Well done.
0:31:39 > 0:31:42You are always trying to be positive, John, but I'm not
0:31:42 > 0:31:45convinced that's any better, to be honest with you, but he was very,
0:31:45 > 0:31:51very close to getting what he wanted. You can hear James saying,
0:31:51 > 0:32:05nail it. If he gets a front-toucher, they're in trouble. Very good.
0:32:24 > 0:32:34Well played. APPLAUSE.
0:32:35 > 0:32:39Just fades away at the end so gives Jamie a little shot down on to that
0:32:39 > 0:32:45ball.
0:32:45 > 0:32:50ball.I'll try that. Even if I go around...
0:32:50 > 0:32:57The way he was saying that, looks as though he might play the back hand.
0:32:57 > 0:33:04If he turns the jack it's good. Shoulder to come off. Well, it's
0:33:04 > 0:33:12more the shot we were thinking of, John. He's got lots of options on
0:33:12 > 0:33:18either side. Needs to pull back quickly.
0:33:18 > 0:33:28Doesn't help. He's infortunate. Just covered the green ball. There are
0:33:28 > 0:33:33still options down the other side snow. Still prefer to be in the red
0:33:33 > 0:33:36position.
0:33:36 > 0:33:46Very good. Well done.That's very decent.
0:33:51 > 0:33:55Back hand Chestney little turn on the back for two.
0:33:57 > 0:34:03Waiting to see if he's got the power to arrive to the jack.
0:34:03 > 0:34:1014 inches.
0:34:15 > 0:34:19Nick is not sure if he's wide enough.
0:34:23 > 0:34:28Nick always lets you know. He's quite a character, always got an
0:34:28 > 0:34:35opinion.He's a very honest player. Doesn't always go down well with
0:34:35 > 0:34:40certain selectors.
0:34:40 > 0:34:47Take the rough with the smooth. If you ask a players' opinion, don't
0:34:47 > 0:34:51like what they say, well don't ask the question.Second chance for
0:34:51 > 0:34:53Jamie Chestney.
0:35:03 > 0:35:11I don't think so.Struggling.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14A gentle draw in.
0:35:19 > 0:35:22Great effort.
0:35:27 > 0:35:35Oh, really good effort. APPLAUSE.
0:35:36 > 0:35:40So many bowls there now, John, that it's hard to remember when the last
0:35:40 > 0:35:44bowl was coming up, but of course we are very fortunate in the commentary
0:35:44 > 0:35:49box, we have got an expert back who tells us when it's the last bowl and
0:35:49 > 0:35:54never gets it wrong. It's great, it really is. We've got all the help we
0:35:54 > 0:35:58need.
0:35:58 > 0:36:08The best seat in the house. With the best advice.
0:36:12 > 0:36:19And nothing to disturb us this time.
0:36:28 > 0:36:31Hard as you can. Well played. APPLAUSE.
0:36:31 > 0:36:41. Close bowls being drawn into the jack. There'll be a bit of sparring
0:36:41 > 0:36:46here.It's going to be a long match, no doubt about that.
0:36:51 > 0:36:58Mark Dawes, number 12 in the world and Jimmy Chestney is very good. In
0:36:58 > 0:37:09terms of the shot play as well, the there are no weaknesses.
0:37:16 > 0:37:20Good again.Even better.
0:37:24 > 0:37:31It's early days but Mark Dawes can drive very accurately as well.
0:37:31 > 0:37:36Doesn't want to put a short bowl in and get in the way. This is not very
0:37:36 > 0:37:43good. That is not the best place to be.Still there but you don't want
0:37:43 > 0:37:48to shove the jack out.
0:37:59 > 0:38:04Moves his hand very well in this direction.A little bit more weight
0:38:04 > 0:38:08coming into position. As long as you miss your own you're good, as Nick
0:38:08 > 0:38:20said. APPLAUSE.
0:38:31 > 0:38:34What an effort!
0:38:36 > 0:38:42Great shot.
0:39:20 > 0:39:31A good position for Nicky.Get it out on the spot.
0:39:31 > 0:39:41Bounce that bowl on to the jack if he can.
0:39:41 > 0:39:49he can.Not the best result it's fair to say.Looking for something a
0:39:49 > 0:39:56bit better from that result.
0:40:04 > 0:40:13Left that forehand for Jamie.
0:40:14 > 0:40:25Forehand draw.Sit off mine you're pretty close, to be honest.
0:40:28 > 0:40:33It's not that difficult.
0:40:33 > 0:40:44Everybody sees it differently. Just won't make it though.
0:41:09 > 0:41:19Just a little short.Well played.I wonder if he'd be a bit more
0:41:19 > 0:41:22aggressive at this stage. Gets him on to the front green and the back
0:41:22 > 0:41:30green as well.It does. Back positions pretty mixed. Certainly
0:41:30 > 0:41:35what we call an arriving draw. That means something else usually within
0:41:35 > 0:41:45about 15, 18 inches of weight. A chance to use the angle as well.
0:41:45 > 0:41:53Didn't have that extra half yard that he needed.
0:42:16 > 0:42:28A packed arena.Very well marshalled. They're volunteers who
0:42:28 > 0:42:35marshal the spectators in and out. Not expecting crowd trouble? !Well,
0:42:35 > 0:42:40the bowlers don't like to be disturbed. You're all a bit
0:42:40 > 0:42:47precious, John!
0:42:50 > 0:42:54You'll have your probables tonight within Liverpool take on the Swan,
0:42:54 > 0:43:00don't worry! -- problems.
0:43:00 > 0:43:04There'll be live commentary on Five Live. I'll be watching with great
0:43:04 > 0:43:09interest. After we finish here of course on the late shift!
0:43:16 > 0:43:21We'll get the highlights somewhere. Or the low lights, from your point
0:43:21 > 0:43:33of view. Now then... Greg. Look at the adjustment on the first.
0:43:35 > 0:43:41Change of side now.
0:43:42 > 0:43:48Very fast on the mat. Doesn't waste any time.
0:43:56 > 0:44:03You can give that a chance.
0:44:03 > 0:44:07Some players don't wait for bowl to stop before they play their one. I
0:44:07 > 0:44:12think the rule says it has to stop. And it does. In terms of playing
0:44:12 > 0:44:15here, we always wait. They're keen to get on with it.
0:44:17 > 0:44:21A bend at the end. The back end of the red. That is going to be shot
0:44:21 > 0:44:28against. Well, it moved the jack. Managed to get away with it.
0:44:33 > 0:44:37Finds a foot on the last delivery.
0:44:50 > 0:45:00Where's it gone? Behind the green ball.
0:45:00 > 0:45:06Well, we knew it was going to be quality, John, but it's great to see
0:45:06 > 0:45:10the pairs with three bowls. Five bowls there within a few inches of
0:45:10 > 0:45:17the jack.
0:45:17 > 0:45:19If that bowl fell over, he'd probably have rested the green away
0:45:19 > 0:45:30as well. Five great deliveries all within inches.
0:45:30 > 0:45:33You get a feeling in this game that one end could be the difference.
0:45:33 > 0:45:40It's going to be very, very tight. Lots of close bowls. One break here
0:45:40 > 0:45:44or there, one good shot or lucky shot maybe could be the difference.
0:45:44 > 0:45:49Interesting choice for Nicky. Trying to take all the danger away by
0:45:49 > 0:45:51running the two bowls off.
0:45:53 > 0:46:01He obviously feels he's at risk here.You don't see that too often.
0:46:01 > 0:46:06I think he played it because he knew the green bowl was covering his own
0:46:06 > 0:46:17shot ball. Missed it on the white to get the two reds away.
0:46:17 > 0:46:22get the two reds away. Use the side green.Very close. Needs to just
0:46:22 > 0:46:26touch it.
0:46:26 > 0:46:34Good and smooth.Surrounded.
0:46:35 > 0:46:43None of them look good... Give me ten minutes!Chatting their
0:46:43 > 0:46:54way out of this one!I think I'd put one through.A bit of banter between
0:46:54 > 0:46:57the two players who're in a bit of trouble and not too sure what to
0:46:57 > 0:47:04play.
0:47:07 > 0:47:12Decent from there.
0:47:12 > 0:47:17Probably only going to draw it though. Just get to the side green.
0:47:17 > 0:47:27A little bit of turn off that. Going to play good weight at this.
0:47:27 > 0:47:33He could get on to the green if he turns the jack over. He's under
0:47:33 > 0:47:43again. He just didn't have the weight really.
0:48:05 > 0:48:21A very brave draw for Nick. He's afraid of dropping the red over. .
0:48:25 > 0:48:30A clever shot. Not sure Jimmy can afford to use a lot of weight here.
0:48:30 > 0:48:38Not sure he's got the best position in the world if the jack goes back.
0:48:40 > 0:48:48You can see what he is trying to do.
0:48:55 > 0:49:01If he gets back to the bowl, drops it back, that might be enough.
0:49:07 > 0:49:21An interesting end. The line is pretty good. Is he up? Dear me.
0:49:21 > 0:49:24Three short bowls there and a head which, to be absolutely honest with
0:49:24 > 0:49:32you, is very much in his favour.
0:49:36 > 0:49:48There's the board. It's all very tight at the moment.
0:50:07 > 0:50:11Jimmy Chestney's wife is a previous gold medal winner in the Craigs, of
0:50:11 > 0:50:17course. -- the Commonwealth Games. She left the venue this morning. She
0:50:17 > 0:50:21was loaded with a cold and coughing all night and didn't want to pass it
0:50:21 > 0:50:26on to Jamie so she's returned home. Very good of her to do that. Looking
0:50:26 > 0:50:31after her husband.
0:50:31 > 0:50:36Fully understandable. There are a few people that have been struggling
0:50:36 > 0:50:42with colds and flus.
0:50:45 > 0:50:49It's very warm in here, extremely uncomfortable if you are not feeling
0:50:49 > 0:50:54100%.
0:51:07 > 0:51:12Not far away.
0:51:12 > 0:51:18Bowls away again by Mark Dawes who doesn't waste any time.
0:51:18 > 0:51:23A good line this is.
0:51:24 > 0:51:29APPLAUSE.
0:51:29 > 0:51:35Very good singles player. He's been making his way through the
0:51:35 > 0:51:40qualifying system. Now he's at number 12. Everybody knows how
0:51:40 > 0:51:45dangerous he is.
0:52:04 > 0:52:07At the moment he's probably just had the edge on the lead-in against
0:52:07 > 0:52:13Greg. He's had to play a few more recovery bowls.Setting positions up
0:52:13 > 0:52:18well. Might be a little unlucky with this one.Nicky would normedly not
0:52:18 > 0:52:27waste too much time with this -- normally.
0:52:54 > 0:53:00Going very tricky. Outside the confines. Brought to the respot
0:53:00 > 0:53:06position. Doesn't happen that often but occasionally the jack goes
0:53:06 > 0:53:08forward.
0:53:32 > 0:53:36Not bad but Jimmy would expect to get closer than that.Never easy
0:53:36 > 0:53:40when you are going out there to the bowl. You are never quite certain if
0:53:40 > 0:53:47the bowl is going to run on a little bit.Right to the edge there.
0:53:47 > 0:53:52Flirted with the ditch.Hurry on down, and again. Well done. That's
0:53:52 > 0:53:54the winner.
0:54:02 > 0:54:09Jimmy's line was good. Need to drop a metre.
0:54:09 > 0:54:16Dropped too much I think.Get up... It's struggling. It's not Jamie,
0:54:16 > 0:54:22really. He's just off a little bit. The previous end he was dropping
0:54:22 > 0:54:28short.
0:54:32 > 0:54:39He's just inside the previous line. Has he got the weight? He has.
0:54:43 > 0:54:46APPLAUSE.
0:54:48 > 0:54:53A little bit more to the inside on the front. Holds the bowl up a bit
0:54:53 > 0:54:59longer. That is why he's ended up in line with the previous bowl.
0:55:03 > 0:55:11So, last bowl of the end.
0:55:14 > 0:55:19Oh, this needs to stop. Needs to pull up.
0:55:28 > 0:55:34Oh, he needed that one. He true the shot but he'll be thinking down
0:55:34 > 0:55:38there, it took me three goes to get it. So he'll not be happy.Better
0:55:38 > 0:55:44late than never though.Absolutely. That is what the third bowl is for
0:55:44 > 0:55:50now.
0:56:09 > 0:56:11Slightly on the longer side.
0:56:19 > 0:56:26Even through the singles, we haven't seen too much of that either. In a
0:56:26 > 0:56:30match like this at the moment where it's so close, neather wants to make
0:56:30 > 0:56:34a dramatic change that might lose them the length. You make a big
0:56:34 > 0:56:37adjustment sometimes, it can affect you as much as your opponent. It's
0:56:37 > 0:56:45only if you are going really badly do you make changes.
0:56:59 > 0:57:08All the way up now. All the way up...
0:57:12 > 0:57:1927 and a half metres and didn't even register a clap.It's a tough
0:57:19 > 0:57:27audience.It really is.
0:57:46 > 0:57:50Green on green, get the jack, get the bowl...Get anything! I think
0:57:50 > 0:57:58that is what he was really saying there.
0:57:58 > 0:58:03Going to get a bad one here. Oh, is he not. I thought he'd taken his own
0:58:03 > 0:58:13two out.Yes.Slightly inside the striking line.He's taken the other
0:58:13 > 0:58:19two bowls off the rink. My goodness me, that held in.
0:58:19 > 0:58:21A bit fortunate.
0:58:44 > 0:58:55Robert Paxton. Very good World Championships in Christchurch
0:58:55 > 0:59:05December 2016 for Robert.
0:59:20 > 0:59:28Either way I play for the split.
0:59:28 > 0:59:37Gets split perfect then it's even better.
0:59:37 > 0:59:46better.He's opened the door.
0:59:53 > 0:59:59It's very warm there, it really is. The house lights.
1:00:00 > 1:00:06It's a whole lot warmer when we had the banks of hotheads coming down on
1:00:06 > 1:00:12us.
1:00:14 > 1:00:19Again, he hasn't been able to nail it.Finished on the spot, mate.
1:00:19 > 1:00:24Anything short of the spot should win.It did last time. Took three
1:00:24 > 1:00:32bowls to get there.
1:00:36 > 1:00:41Oh right to the edge again.Well played.He has played it
1:00:41 > 1:00:50brilliantly. APPLAUSE
1:00:50 > 1:00:55I think Nick said, "You make it sound easy" after the bowl had left
1:00:55 > 1:01:11his hand. He knew that was close. The side line not as close as Nicky.
1:01:11 > 1:01:17He will do well to hold that line. Pulls away at the end.Just a bit
1:01:17 > 1:01:25inside, but it was enough. A chance for a double. A spare shot
1:01:25 > 1:01:30opportunity.
1:01:30 > 1:01:35He is even wider with this one. Should be good if his weight is
1:01:35 > 1:01:40good. He is playing well out there, isn't he? He likes the jack in that
1:01:40 > 1:01:41position. APPLAUSE
1:01:41 > 1:01:49He hasn't missed too many opportunities. A good double. Played
1:01:49 > 1:01:54the hit, John, opened it up and then drew two shots. He's playing well,
1:01:54 > 1:01:58Nicky, at the moment. He had some good recovery bowls and he's
1:01:58 > 1:02:04probably the difference.Oh, he is at the minute. Mark Dawes had the
1:02:04 > 1:02:09edge on Greg in this first set so far, but Nicky has been very, very
1:02:09 > 1:02:15consistent in his play.
1:02:57 > 1:03:02A good lead in.
1:03:21 > 1:03:26A big bend at the end and drop.Oh, it looks like it might. A little
1:03:26 > 1:03:36touch on it.
1:03:38 > 1:03:45The Chestney-Daws combination really needs to win this end.
1:03:53 > 1:03:57Es combination really needs to win this
1:04:06 > 1:04:10Greg is just reaching his own bowl. Anything better he'll draw it clean
1:04:10 > 1:04:22and he has drawn it clean here. APPLAUSE
1:04:22 > 1:04:29Well, that's going to hesitate a change.
1:04:29 > 1:04:33change. -- necessitate a change.
1:04:38 > 1:04:45Tough to draw. Tough to make it. If you can see the green bowl, you
1:04:45 > 1:04:50could get both of them.You can see two-thirds of it. That's usually
1:04:50 > 1:05:00enough.He can probably still miss his own red just about. He didn't
1:05:00 > 1:05:04want to take his own red. That was the danger. He was so close to the
1:05:04 > 1:05:08red, but he had to get close to the red to get the green. That was the
1:05:08 > 1:05:16rid k. It is unfortunate, but it is a clear road for the two green. He
1:05:16 > 1:05:24knew that was just on the inside. Yes, Mark. That replay was actually
1:05:24 > 1:05:28on the big screen and I think everybody was looking at it. Very,
1:05:28 > 1:05:34very close.
1:05:39 > 1:05:47Sensible here, Nicky. He's dropping it on the backhand.Well he knows he
1:05:47 > 1:05:53needs another one in there because the two bowls can disappear and I
1:05:53 > 1:06:01don't imagine Jamie will play for it.
1:06:03 > 1:06:09No, he's under.
1:06:09 > 1:06:13It hasn't really helped, has t John? That's just made the target a lot
1:06:13 > 1:06:17more difficult. The only thing is they are a little bit further away.
1:06:17 > 1:06:22He has got more room if he did want to draw it David. Nicky will be
1:06:22 > 1:06:32aware of that. Try and finish this set.
1:06:38 > 1:06:43He's in the pocket.Well played. He's in the pocket. That's all he
1:06:43 > 1:06:53had to do. I can't see those three going just the way they're sitting.
1:06:53 > 1:06:56He will probably say there is a draw there, David. It is possible to draw
1:06:56 > 1:07:02the shot. The driving shot wasn't secure enough to take all three
1:07:02 > 1:07:12bowls out. So, back to the draw. This looks a little bit under. Line
1:07:12 > 1:07:23and weight. Oh dear, that's not like you at all.
1:07:25 > 1:07:28AA good position here.They have got everything covered, haven't
1:07:28 > 1:07:34they? Every green bowl has a value there. It really does. The chat here
1:07:34 > 1:07:39is about do I want to widen this any more than it is? That's a difficult
1:07:39 > 1:07:46one. You can play a really good bowl and give Jamie a wider target, but
1:07:46 > 1:07:51he maybe tempted to leave a bowl in the drawing line.Well, if he drops
1:07:51 > 1:07:56one a foot short, that would be good.Yes. Nothing side-on. You
1:07:56 > 1:08:01don't want to widen the target. Decided to go the other side just in
1:08:01 > 1:08:05case somehow or other the jack ends up over with the two reds. I can't
1:08:05 > 1:08:09see it ending up there. No, I think what he is saying to Jamie, I'm not
1:08:09 > 1:08:12sure if you have got the feel of the rink at the moment, you're not
1:08:12 > 1:08:16drawing that well so I'm going to leave you the draw rather than play
1:08:16 > 1:08:23the weighted bowl. So he needs a big one here Jamie Chestney. He needs to
1:08:23 > 1:08:34find a really good bowl.
1:08:37 > 1:08:41Mark has been saying too much. So it must be close in terms of the line.
1:08:41 > 1:08:47Has he got the weight though? That's the important bit now. Not quite.
1:08:47 > 1:08:50Probably second shot though. APPLAUSE
1:08:50 > 1:08:56It was a big try, wasn't it? A good effort.
1:08:56 > 1:09:02Two or three more inches and he gets the shot.I think I saw Nicky
1:09:02 > 1:09:12indicating, it was probably just the one... We have to bear in mind these
1:09:12 > 1:09:22guys know each other so well. They're international colleagues.
1:09:38 > 1:09:42In previous matches Jamie Chestney was drawing them in like sweeties
1:09:42 > 1:09:50really in situations like that. That's well in for second shot. Just
1:09:50 > 1:10:04playing as well today. But still in touch.
1:10:07 > 1:10:12A tough one. Three shots. You'd expect Harlow and Brett with their
1:10:12 > 1:10:16background experience to be able to see this set out, but anything can
1:10:16 > 1:10:22happen in sport and bowls is unpredictable at times, isn't it?
1:10:22 > 1:10:27Well, it is no different to any other sport in many ways. It's very
1:10:27 > 1:10:36hard to call a result.
1:10:38 > 1:10:42hard to call a result.Ease down. Great start. Well played. Well done.
1:10:42 > 1:10:52It's a good start when you're three ahead.
1:11:26 > 1:11:30He's calling this. He wants it right to the jack or the red bowl at the
1:11:30 > 1:11:35very least.
1:11:44 > 1:11:50I think when you're trying to score multiples in a game like this where
1:11:50 > 1:11:57you've got two players and Greg can drive well and it is very hard toe
1:11:57 > 1:12:09score any more than one or two shots in an end.
1:12:16 > 1:12:22Just needs to ben back the centre.
1:12:30 > 1:12:35Ideal for Mark Dawes if he can get in and send the red bowl round.
1:12:35 > 1:12:39Where it is at the moment, you would expect Nicky to get in there. A wide
1:12:39 > 1:12:54target. It's a good place. It gives Jamie a chance.
1:12:54 > 1:12:58Jamie a chance. The shot for Nicky is to draw in as Greg was saying.
1:12:58 > 1:13:04Just pull the jack yourself and try and do the shot before Jamie
1:13:04 > 1:13:10Chestney gets an opportunity.
1:13:19 > 1:13:32An opportunity here.Turn the jack round the corner.
1:13:33 > 1:13:38John Jamie is looking for this big bowl to get him going. If he gets
1:13:38 > 1:13:44the jack solid, he's good. That's pretty good.A little bit unlucky,
1:13:44 > 1:13:49John. If he bounced it to his own bowl, it would be fine, but it has
1:13:49 > 1:13:53come out into the open, that's unlucky. But at least he was
1:13:53 > 1:13:57reaching on that occasion. This is a big delivery for Nick. You wouldn't
1:13:57 > 1:14:03want to miss with this.
1:14:03 > 1:14:07want to miss with this.Well, Greg is not calling it so there is
1:14:07 > 1:14:12something wrong. Probably third shot.Now then there, is a real
1:14:12 > 1:14:21chance for Jamie to put some pressure on.
1:14:21 > 1:14:25pressure on.Nick will adjust. There is no doubt about that. So this has
1:14:25 > 1:14:37to be really close. He's calling it. He's calling it just to make three.
1:14:39 > 1:14:43Well, it's in, but, Nick wasting a moment's time. There is no
1:14:43 > 1:14:48discussion about this shot. Just get down there and draw close.Just felt
1:14:48 > 1:14:53that Jamie needed to be a little bit closer with that bowl to add the
1:14:53 > 1:15:02pressure.
1:15:05 > 1:15:17Waiting on the call from Greg. He has well overplayed it. Oh man, this
1:15:17 > 1:15:21is a chance for the set. You could never ever have called that. No,
1:15:21 > 1:15:28they haven't played a great end.
1:15:28 > 1:15:30they haven't played a great end.To be fair to Mark and Jamie, they
1:15:30 > 1:15:34would have been thinking if we get a three to draw the set we'll be
1:15:34 > 1:15:39stealing a bit of it, but to have the opportunity to actually win the
1:15:39 > 1:15:43set, goodness me.The problem started really three bowls out of
1:15:43 > 1:15:48the first four with Nicky and Greg, you could see them down the green.
1:15:48 > 1:15:53Once the jack was pulled, they were out of the game. What an
1:15:53 > 1:15:57opportunity, Jamie Chestney. There is only one thing he has to make
1:15:57 > 1:16:00sure of here and that is, he has to be on the slightly wider side. He
1:16:00 > 1:16:06doesn't want to move the jack.Well, he's good if he has got the weight.
1:16:06 > 1:16:10He has to have good weight though. Is he up?
1:16:10 > 1:16:17Oh, I'm not sure. Ah, I'm not sure. Goodness me! Oh, he's not. He hasn't
1:16:17 > 1:16:25made it. That's three. Well, even throwing it outen the high line and
1:16:25 > 1:16:29letting it come back John and play the safe line which he appeared to
1:16:29 > 1:16:38have. Oh my goodness me. What an end.
1:16:40 > 1:16:52end. Joy and disappointment.You pick it. You're playing well.
1:16:52 > 1:16:54pick it. You're playing well. That was just unbelievable to be truthful
1:16:54 > 1:16:59with you. First of all, Nicky missing it and then Jamie having,
1:16:59 > 1:17:09you know, it's...It was a big opportunity to go a set in front.
1:17:09 > 1:17:15Well, the chances are we're
1:17:16 > 1:17:19Well, the chances are we're going -- we're going to have a winner in the
1:17:19 > 1:17:24second set.You're putting your neck out there.It is a rare occurrence
1:17:24 > 1:17:30so I think I'm on a pretty good wicket on this one! A better wicket
1:17:30 > 1:17:41than what Swansea will be tonight.
1:17:47 > 1:17:54All that effort and you're thinking if they had stolen that set it would
1:17:54 > 1:17:59have been an amazing result. If they sneaked it, it was probably against
1:17:59 > 1:18:03the run of play. Mark played very well. Nicky turned over a lot of the
1:18:03 > 1:18:08early ends in that set. You could argue, I suppose, that 6-6 was a
1:18:08 > 1:18:13pretty fair result with the bowling, but what an opportunity.Certainly
1:18:13 > 1:18:19based on Mark's play.
1:18:19 > 1:18:23based on Mark's play. He has edged Greg, but in the end it was Nicky
1:18:23 > 1:18:29missing the two bowls. But it was a good set. Very interesting stuff
1:18:29 > 1:18:40with some brilliant play.
1:19:05 > 1:19:14Just tuck tucked it in.
1:19:26 > 1:19:30Well, a good chance here for Greg because anything wide and heavy will
1:19:30 > 1:19:40pick up the other red. If it gets into the inside, a treble.I don't
1:19:40 > 1:19:49think you'll draw this.
1:19:49 > 1:19:54think you'll draw this. Hit it well -- hitting it well. That will go on
1:19:54 > 1:19:59to the respot position. Everything is cleared off the rink. Very good
1:19:59 > 1:20:09at that shot.
1:20:32 > 1:20:43Really good, mate. Well done.Respot again.
1:20:44 > 1:20:49A decent line this time. It is all about weight. It looks like it's
1:20:49 > 1:20:55chucking a little bit. Just threw it. That's not a bad place to be. It
1:20:55 > 1:21:02has been dropping short in the last few ends. So he would be happy
1:21:02 > 1:21:15enough. And that's been playing well to the off set jack.
1:21:15 > 1:21:19to the off set jack. It is a better shot.He has played really well,
1:21:19 > 1:21:24Nick. The only failure was at the last end of the first set. Two loose
1:21:24 > 1:21:31deliveries. Other than that he has been very good.More or less the
1:21:31 > 1:21:38same bowl for Jamie.
1:21:38 > 1:21:42same bowl for Jamie. He's in the area. He needs an edge to straighten
1:21:42 > 1:21:49him up from the front one. A good second. Offers up a chance from the
1:21:49 > 1:21:55plant. He is still talking about the last
1:21:55 > 1:22:06end. You can see it in his face.He is struggling a bit with his game.
1:22:06 > 1:22:14Words of enurgement from Mark Dawes -- encouragement from Mark Dawes.
1:22:14 > 1:22:18Well, it's not terrible. It's a good, bad one.Takes that plant
1:22:18 > 1:22:24away.Yes. Good bad ones as we say in this sport because he didn't get
1:22:24 > 1:22:28anywhere near what he was wanting, but he has blocked the shot that
1:22:28 > 1:22:33John McCain which would have been playing.I wonder is it anything
1:22:33 > 1:22:45across the rink on the other side, David? I can't see from this angle.
1:22:45 > 1:22:48Well, what he's looking at, I think, really is the possibility of getting
1:22:48 > 1:22:54this into that. Now, if he does that then you're talking about that bowl
1:22:54 > 1:22:58disappearing, this bowl disappearing and hopefully the front one will
1:22:58 > 1:23:04move as well and if that happens, then we've got the potential of this
1:23:04 > 1:23:11bowl here becoming the key bowl.
1:23:12 > 1:23:14bowl here becoming the key bowl. The alternative if he really wants to
1:23:14 > 1:23:20play it is to draw in there and not particularly easy o do, the front
1:23:20 > 1:23:28bowl is in the way. There is nothing easy about this. The running bowl is
1:23:28 > 1:23:31a bit speculative, you're hoping to get the right direction. The fore
1:23:31 > 1:23:38hand draw. It was just a foot in his last one, as you say, John. He's
1:23:38 > 1:23:43playing a timing shot. Let's see what happens. Hasn't got the running
1:23:43 > 1:23:52to do a lot of damage on the pace. He must have been able to see an
1:23:52 > 1:23:58inch of that on the backhand, I think. It was a low percentage shot,
1:23:58 > 1:24:07but he probably felt it was worthwhile.
1:24:07 > 1:24:13worthwhile. An interesting end.
1:24:20 > 1:24:27The pairs are always well supported.
1:24:39 > 1:24:43The players have microphones so you're getting a lot of the
1:24:43 > 1:24:48conversations.
1:24:49 > 1:24:53conversations.Quite noticeable with Greg's bowls, using the green here.
1:24:53 > 1:24:58He doesn't bend as much of his red set, David. For some strange reasons
1:24:58 > 1:25:02it seems to be the case. For most of the greens, that's according to the
1:25:02 > 1:25:08players, and certainly I've noticed it in years gone past as well that
1:25:08 > 1:25:11the greens don't pull back as much. The manufacturers can't give a
1:25:11 > 1:25:16reason for it. They are all made on the same machine and same weight.
1:25:16 > 1:25:20You order two bowls exactly the same in terms of size, weight and grips
1:25:20 > 1:25:33and all of that and they dplairchly between a red and a green.
1:25:49 > 1:25:56Pretty good again. Very good lead in again from Mark
1:25:56 > 1:26:03Dawes.He has done a very good job in this pairs final, Mark Dawes. A
1:26:03 > 1:26:10good combination him and Jamie.
1:26:21 > 1:26:27A good recovery.
1:26:27 > 1:26:31APPLAUSE
1:26:31 > 1:26:36It's going to be a hard one to get out as well.
1:26:36 > 1:26:40You get the plant. I mean your back one should lock on that one. Get the
1:26:40 > 1:26:45jack and try and open it up a bit. I'm not convinced that that plant
1:26:45 > 1:26:50will actually take the green one out of the head completely.Might find
1:26:50 > 1:27:01out here. The jack. It's good. He opened it up. A good strike. He is
1:27:01 > 1:27:04playing a good all-round game, Mark, when he needs to, he hits the
1:27:04 > 1:27:19strike. He is drawing well as well. So it gives the skip a chance.
1:27:19 > 1:27:22So it gives the skip a chance. He could have auditioned for Harry
1:27:22 > 1:27:27Potter!There wouldn't have been much in it, I would have thought,
1:27:27 > 1:27:36many years ago! Of course, we do have a Harry Potter
1:27:36 > 1:27:49in real life here. John Potter!
1:27:51 > 1:27:59His son, is called Harry.Very good. He has played this well.He has.He
1:27:59 > 1:28:04has nailed that one. That's more like Jamie Chestney.That's what
1:28:04 > 1:28:12we're used to from Jamie. There is Mrs Potter. Resplendent in floral on
1:28:12 > 1:28:17cream, I think, that's what that is called. Floral on cream.I will take
1:28:17 > 1:28:23it from you. You're more up on women's fashion.No choice. No
1:28:23 > 1:28:31choice. Well, again that's what you expect
1:28:31 > 1:28:36and not only that, but the little touch on the jack is a bonus. John
1:28:36 > 1:28:47has made a double out of it.
1:28:52 > 1:28:58It probably kicked out a little bit, but that's to be expected.
1:28:58 > 1:29:02The advantage of the three bowls as well, John, you get an awful lot
1:29:02 > 1:29:11more of the attacking play.Yes, I think if he's going for the spot
1:29:11 > 1:29:18this position, he doesn't need to widen the target.
1:29:18 > 1:29:25That's OK. That's very good. He couldn't have played that better.
1:29:25 > 1:29:34APPLAUSE Well, that's right on it, isn't it?
1:29:46 > 1:29:52So, green bowl on to green bowl or jack clean? Can't be tight. He
1:29:52 > 1:29:56doesn't want his own bowl. I did see Greg looking at the other two bowls
1:29:56 > 1:30:05to see who is lying fourth and fifth.Well, back into it.Well, he
1:30:05 > 1:30:09has reduced it to one. I couldn't really see the jack going
1:30:09 > 1:30:14there.
1:30:19 > 1:30:27Not only did it go the wrong side, it went up the Queen as well.
1:30:27 > 1:30:36I don't think that was a bad result. He'd been in a bit of trouble there.
1:30:50 > 1:30:54If you can't get the shot in a straightforward way and there are
1:30:54 > 1:30:57things against you, you give a chance to reduce the damage, get it
1:30:57 > 1:31:09down to a single. Taking bowls out, moving jacks around...
1:31:12 > 1:31:17That is it for you. The thing about match craft is, it doesn't go ton
1:31:17 > 1:31:23the score sheet, it's just something that is inherent in the top players
1:31:23 > 1:31:28that the match craft comes into play and they keep it tight.
1:31:28 > 1:31:36There's been one treble and one double in the match so far. That's
1:31:36 > 1:31:40not by chance, just the fact the players are working their way around
1:31:40 > 1:31:41the game.
1:32:15 > 1:32:22Two red bowls in good position there.
1:32:38 > 1:32:49You'd expect Mark to draw this.
1:32:49 > 1:32:54Over-adjusted. In terms of the mat, that's probably one of the loosest
1:32:54 > 1:33:05we've had.Yes, the standard has been really good.
1:33:37 > 1:33:45Just playing the forehand slipping inside the green bowl.
1:33:45 > 1:33:52Overplayed it.
1:33:55 > 1:33:59These players for many years have been in the same clubs so they know
1:33:59 > 1:34:08each other very well.Keep it coming forward.Well played.I think
1:34:08 > 1:34:14that'll make his mind up now. He's a bit unlucky and he knows it.
1:34:22 > 1:34:24Jamie could well attack this.
1:34:36 > 1:34:40Down the back hand or forehand. It's tight on the back hand.Either way,
1:34:40 > 1:34:43the angle is good to come off. Forehand more of the jack to aim
1:34:43 > 1:34:51for.No options on the forehand. Very close with this. Oh!
1:34:51 > 1:34:56Unbelievable.
1:34:56 > 1:35:05Unbelievable. I think that got an ooh and an ah from the crowd.
1:35:05 > 1:35:08Wasting absolutely no time there but a thin edge would have been very
1:35:08 > 1:35:13good indeed. That's the back covered and you can do no more than that.I
1:35:13 > 1:35:20think he'll go again.Oh, he has to.
1:35:20 > 1:35:25Look at the positions. Missed the inside. You would never be able to
1:35:25 > 1:35:30do that if you tried it.No.A little less weight he would have had
1:35:30 > 1:35:34the stwining and that would have brought him on to the red bowl and
1:35:34 > 1:35:41you don't want that either. He has to play it again. Desperately
1:35:41 > 1:35:50unlucky, unless he gets his own bowl face on.
1:35:52 > 1:35:57Going quicker. A chance again. Has he gone past? He has. Really good
1:35:57 > 1:36:00drive. APPLAUSE.
1:36:03 > 1:36:10I think he was hoping to get the green bowl on the way through.
1:36:14 > 1:36:19That would have gone down like an absolute rocket. Good drive.Good
1:36:19 > 1:36:28shot, he'll take that. That's a single.
1:36:46 > 1:36:55Get your feet off that, Robert, you wouldn't do that at home!
1:36:55 > 1:37:08You have the opportunity to chill with coffee and things out there.
1:37:11 > 1:37:17I'll bring in biscuits tomorrow.I'm off them.Christmas did a lot of
1:37:17 > 1:37:18damage.
1:37:48 > 1:37:52Correction needed.
1:37:52 > 1:38:04Just a little bit but not that much. Still needs to drop two more feet.
1:38:17 > 1:38:23Good position, covers the reds.Life is amazing sometimes. You mention a
1:38:23 > 1:38:32coffee and suddenly, magically, it appears.
1:39:04 > 1:39:12Needs to hurry. Stays up.
1:39:31 > 1:39:35Quite a journey for Nick from where he was living at the time, to two to
1:39:35 > 1:39:40his club. Very successful though. Won a lot of national titles
1:39:40 > 1:39:47together, these two. Now, can you get the ball there? His own bowl's
1:39:47 > 1:39:51ran into a good position. Green bowl would have been perfect. But the
1:39:51 > 1:39:56jack is good.Playing with that kind of controlled weight gets it moving
1:39:56 > 1:39:59on it. Very good delivery.
1:40:05 > 1:40:11Needs an edge.
1:40:11 > 1:40:18Dropped in as well!Big bonus. Played it well again. Good reach in
1:40:18 > 1:40:27weight.
1:40:28 > 1:40:33weight. Any movement on the jack is good. Big effort as well. Very close
1:40:33 > 1:40:44isn't he? Gets a jack. How unlucky is that? !An inch either ways, it
1:40:44 > 1:40:52was good value for three.Just past the red bowls is where you're
1:40:52 > 1:40:59headed, mate.
1:41:05 > 1:41:11You can hear Greg saying he wants to bowl past.
1:41:11 > 1:41:14Has to play it with a very controlled weight now to get the
1:41:14 > 1:41:20shot.Yes. He'll still be playing into that. Really what he wants is
1:41:20 > 1:41:24the movement of jack into about that position. If it gets a bit harder,
1:41:24 > 1:41:29it's a difficulty, because it brings the two green bowls into play. I
1:41:29 > 1:41:33think he's got no choice, he has to play it.I think he's playing the
1:41:33 > 1:41:37same bowl as the last delivery, he's going to be close. Same line. Same
1:41:37 > 1:41:40weight.
1:41:45 > 1:41:53There's something not quite the same.
1:41:55 > 1:42:04I don't see any value in going anywhere near that.
1:42:12 > 1:42:16He can't possibly be... No, he's not.
1:42:25 > 1:42:31It was never going to be a shot to be played. It wasn't the time to try
1:42:31 > 1:42:32to be a hero.
1:42:35 > 1:42:393-1 looks pretty good, I would say.
1:42:39 > 1:42:44It's that type of game. You don't want to give anything away. It's
1:42:44 > 1:42:51going to be close. At the moment, they've got the edge.Short of jack
1:42:51 > 1:42:58length, 25 metres, an interesting change.
1:43:07 > 1:43:11Trying to shake Mark Dawes off the length and line. That's been the
1:43:11 > 1:43:16main thing. Greg's been playing well, but Mark's just been getting
1:43:16 > 1:43:25inside.
1:43:29 > 1:43:37APPLAUSE.
1:44:08 > 1:44:10APPLAUSE.
1:44:21 > 1:44:31Trying to back hand very well. Trying to make the adjustment.
1:44:32 > 1:44:37Forehand runner will be left to Nick if he doesn't get it.
1:44:40 > 1:44:44Just didn't get back. Not trouping quite as well for him on his back
1:44:44 > 1:44:50handers as his red bowls.And and it's a shorter jack.It is. Gets a
1:44:50 > 1:44:52big turn.
1:44:57 > 1:45:04Mark could really make this difficult.
1:45:07 > 1:45:11That is the red, the same manufacturer and model as the green,
1:45:11 > 1:45:19just dipping a little bit more. There are a lot of things that can
1:45:19 > 1:45:27affect the delivery. Always a good talking point.
1:45:30 > 1:45:37Wasting no time on the forehand runner. Clear the reds. He's getting
1:45:37 > 1:45:44the run-through, is he? Red bowl just dropped in time. He's cleared
1:45:44 > 1:45:50the way.
1:45:52 > 1:45:57Needs to tighten the bowls up because they will disappear. Needs
1:45:57 > 1:46:00to get in beside them.
1:46:05 > 1:46:22Not bad. Going again, looking for the split. Oh! A horrible result.
1:46:22 > 1:46:28How on earth... Looked perfect on the split.Certainly did. Looked to
1:46:28 > 1:46:30get the two Reds away.
1:46:32 > 1:46:36Nicky will want to turn his mic off and air his thoughts on that, I'm
1:46:36 > 1:46:46sure.Can't be happy with that one. It was a real poor result.
1:46:58 > 1:47:01He's looking for a really good front bowl.
1:47:03 > 1:47:09Not bad. He's going to have to draw this.Yes, the only thing you could
1:47:09 > 1:47:14say is, there's room to draw it in favour for Jamie, he's played two
1:47:14 > 1:47:18running bowls. That's the only thing that'll put a doubt in his mained
1:47:18 > 1:47:24but he'll fancy getting close with this -- in his mind.
1:47:33 > 1:47:39Two of them not particularly close. You would expect to draw probably
1:47:39 > 1:47:42third... Getting close to second you are going to be very close to the
1:47:42 > 1:47:51shot. Not getting much from Greg on this one. He's missed it. That's
1:47:51 > 1:47:59going to be a big score, the biggest score of the match.
1:47:59 > 1:48:02score of the match. Can't say anything about it. Looks like a five
1:48:02 > 1:48:11coming up here.
1:48:11 > 1:48:15coming up here. The last time he had a Hans to draw for four, he missed
1:48:15 > 1:48:17it.
1:48:17 > 1:48:26There is a lot of room here, I fancy him to do this. It's all about
1:48:26 > 1:48:31getting within a yard. Doesn't want to move the jack.
1:48:33 > 1:48:42APPLAUSE. Massive end. Don't see too many of
1:48:42 > 1:48:55tho pairs. Three shots in it. Just means the set is not dead but it's
1:48:55 > 1:49:03certainly in favour now.Turned the match upside down really. It was so
1:49:03 > 1:49:17close up until then. So much damage done to Greg and Nick here.Still
1:49:17 > 1:49:22four ends to go. Talking about three shots. You know, it's still doable,
1:49:22 > 1:49:30just remember the last time. Got three to go level. Won the set.
1:49:30 > 1:49:42Jamie would have traded that last bowl.
1:50:02 > 1:50:07Reply from Greg. They can afford to reach it then. Won't do too much
1:50:07 > 1:50:15damage.This is the time now for Chestney. If they can put the
1:50:15 > 1:50:19pressure on, they'll be in a very strong position. That is very good
1:50:19 > 1:50:28as well. I'll be well pleased with that.
1:50:41 > 1:50:47Asking a few questions of Greg Harlow. Really trying hard. Doesn't
1:50:47 > 1:50:55want to be solid.
1:51:08 > 1:51:13Stephen fry just mentioned he's enjoying the bowls. We now you're a
1:51:13 > 1:51:18fan.
1:51:20 > 1:51:29fan. The skill level is very, very high.
1:51:40 > 1:51:47# Bbcbowls - you never know who is watching.
1:51:48 > 1:51:53Nick is looking to try to change the shape of this head. At the moment,
1:51:53 > 1:51:59it's in favour of the red bowls. If he gets on to the back red with this
1:51:59 > 1:52:03one, Greg has got a chance.
1:52:07 > 1:52:11Changed that completely. Really good bowl.
1:52:14 > 1:52:17Always liked coaching the celebrities. Some years ago we had
1:52:17 > 1:52:21the hole in the wall guy back in Northern Ireland, I coached him for
1:52:21 > 1:52:25years, we played an exhibition game. We'll get Stephen down to coach with
1:52:25 > 1:52:35him.
1:52:43 > 1:52:48Perfect bowl to drop off on to the green and fall in. Not a lot of room
1:52:48 > 1:52:59to spare. Very close.
1:53:04 > 1:53:11Signal to Nicky, the little turn of the jack.
1:53:27 > 1:53:33Good effort.Didn't want to be short. Got into a good position
1:53:33 > 1:53:39there.
1:53:39 > 1:53:50there.This is a very narrow target.
1:53:58 > 1:54:09Still is possible to turn that red away.Good weight though.
1:54:09 > 1:54:16We got a glimpse there of the face of Nicky Brett.
1:54:20 > 1:54:25Front bowl. That might give him something. It's very narrow.
1:54:29 > 1:54:35The plan is not good because the red bowl at the end of the rink...
1:54:35 > 1:54:41It's a very good position. That plant isn't very good at all.I
1:54:41 > 1:54:45wonder what he's looking at is that. Having said that, where the danger
1:54:45 > 1:54:50is, is over this direction here. That jack goes back, they've got the
1:54:50 > 1:54:55green bowls coming into play. So, you know, the front plant moves the
1:54:55 > 1:55:00jack, it's just how far it goes. Still a shot down the forehand on
1:55:00 > 1:55:03the draw. Playing what he did before, trying to get to that green.
1:55:03 > 1:55:08It's not widened in the target on the back hand. Leaving Nicky very
1:55:08 > 1:55:17little. Line's good again. Line's very good with this. Gets the bend.
1:55:17 > 1:55:24Still just hanging off, isn't it. Pretty good though. To be honest,
1:55:24 > 1:55:30even if he gets on to the front, the jack will move, it's just how far it
1:55:30 > 1:55:33moves but it moves to there, he gets a double. He may have to use a bit
1:55:33 > 1:55:38of weight and the red bowl at 5 o'clock is the vital bowl and if
1:55:38 > 1:55:43there's too much weight. It's just drawing it, David. You can see the
1:55:43 > 1:55:50reasons why.Further, mate.Greg is calling it. He thinks it's closer.
1:55:50 > 1:55:58Big effort, big effort! Well played! Great bowl. Marvellous bowl.
1:55:58 > 1:56:06APPLAUSE. A fantastic bowl under that sort of
1:56:06 > 1:56:12pressure.
1:56:12 > 1:56:176-4.
1:56:17 > 1:56:23Easy to say there's a dramatic difference from 7-3. Had it been
1:56:23 > 1:56:267-3, they'd be chasing the match but now, two shots behind, three ends to
1:56:26 > 1:56:34go. Very doable.
1:56:51 > 1:56:55APPLAUSE.
1:57:05 > 1:57:15Concentration On Mark Dawes face. He's very good at that. Doesn't
1:57:15 > 1:57:20wander.
1:57:39 > 1:57:45Ten inches away. Silence. Expectations are high. It's tough
1:57:45 > 1:57:50out there, it really is.Don't get a clap for anything other than a
1:57:50 > 1:57:59toucher.
1:58:03 > 1:58:09Greg would really like to get to the green bowls. There are a thousand
1:58:09 > 1:58:17people out there. No-one can decide to clap one bowl a foot away.
1:58:17 > 1:58:25APPLAUSE. Pretty good that.That's good.
1:58:25 > 1:58:35Probably one of Greg's best ends. It's the right time to do it.
1:58:36 > 1:58:40Will he get back. Needs to bend very quickly. It's just not bending for
1:58:40 > 1:58:47him. You can see it. He thought that was coming in at one stage and
1:58:47 > 1:58:54Mark's also confused.
1:58:56 > 1:59:03It's up to you.
1:59:03 > 1:59:07Forehand draw puts the bowl into position, the back hand draw turns
1:59:07 > 1:59:14the jack around the corner and really gives Jamie a lot of trouble.
1:59:14 > 1:59:18He doesn't want to leave him with that shot. Gets the movement on the
1:59:18 > 1:59:20jack.
1:59:28 > 1:59:32Got down, the red's going to fall. That's not where the issue is, but
1:59:32 > 1:59:36it's a big shoulder. It just means now Jamie can afford to play with
1:59:36 > 1:59:46weight. Instead of just drawing, he can play into this.
1:59:47 > 1:59:51Will he use the shoulder the right way? Yes, he has. Opened it up.
1:59:51 > 1:59:57Still one down. A bit unlucky with that bowl following through but he's
1:59:57 > 2:00:03opened it up.It's about that little bit in front...
2:00:05 > 2:00:11Only problem he's had is, Nick's been very good on the offset jack.
2:00:11 > 2:00:20He certainly has, throughout the match. Good line again.
2:00:20 > 2:00:23match. Good line again. It's not going to help in terms of drying to
2:00:23 > 2:00:29draw the shot.
2:00:37 > 2:00:41You have got to picture this on the mat. You have got to play a draw and
2:00:41 > 2:00:49hope you miss on the inside. Well the trouble is you get on to the
2:00:49 > 2:00:54green bowl and you're not doing anything with it. Yeah, exactly. He
2:00:54 > 2:00:57has also fallen away too. That was always going to be a problem, but
2:00:57 > 2:01:01there was no other way in. So...The only thing I would say, the plus
2:01:01 > 2:01:05point is he moved those two green bowls for the target. He has got
2:01:05 > 2:01:11options if he wants to attack those. He has got the split to take the two
2:01:11 > 2:01:14bowls out and it is still a problem for Nick because he needs another
2:01:14 > 2:01:22bowl in.
2:01:22 > 2:01:26bowl in. You are really looking at it, it is something, John, if he
2:01:26 > 2:01:30could make the draw and get it into this sort of position, that's what
2:01:30 > 2:01:36he is looking for. He can drop in that side of it. He needs something
2:01:36 > 2:01:41hidden in this area and the ideal position is to get one in there and
2:01:41 > 2:01:46that's hidden. No worries. Take the two bowls out and you're still going
2:01:46 > 2:01:50to get the shot.It is coming away from the two greens. On the other
2:01:50 > 2:01:55side of the jack, it would be away from those greens and it would be a
2:01:55 > 2:02:00good bowl. The difficulty is that, you know, whenever you look at these
2:02:00 > 2:02:06bowls here, the two green ones, this one in particular, because that one
2:02:06 > 2:02:09is a problem really for Jamie because he can't get the line into
2:02:09 > 2:02:22the jack on the draw. So that bowl there is a key bowl in this end.
2:02:44 > 2:02:51Nicky has decided. Backhand.Oh, this will be interesting.He is
2:02:51 > 2:02:56coming around to a deep position.He is taking a risk on this. What he's
2:02:56 > 2:03:03really saying is, if you take those two bowls out, I'm prepared to lose
2:03:03 > 2:03:11the shots, but if you get the jack, I've got it covered. That's a very
2:03:11 > 2:03:14risky policy, John, because you can't cover both with one bowl. It's
2:03:14 > 2:03:20impossible. If he gets this absolutely plum, there is a chance.
2:03:20 > 2:03:25It is a split on the greens, isn't it? Gets the splits on the green
2:03:25 > 2:03:30then he's in business. It is what he's looking for. The
2:03:30 > 2:03:35green bowl goes. The green bowl goes and it brings all those red ones
2:03:35 > 2:03:44into play. Oh, he's playing it very controlled. Goodness me, Jim, are
2:03:44 > 2:03:47you trying to draw it? He is not trying to draw it. He's still
2:03:47 > 2:03:53looking for the split. Well, I don't know, John, I think he
2:03:53 > 2:03:57was taking a chance. There was only one green bowl there and he had
2:03:57 > 2:04:01what, three thirds? He hit the target, but he didn't have enough
2:04:01 > 2:04:05weight to do the damage. Three-thirds with one bowl against,
2:04:05 > 2:04:09you know, even if he had taken the two bowls out and cleaned his own
2:04:09 > 2:04:16close one out, he was still scoring two. Why on earth did he use that
2:04:16 > 2:04:23weight? If he had got the bowl and run
2:04:23 > 2:04:27through, he would have got a single, but I think that was a chance to win
2:04:27 > 2:04:31the match.I thought he might have gone thicker at that.Sometimes you
2:04:31 > 2:04:36get a chance to win the match. If he had taken that and had a real go at
2:04:36 > 2:04:41it and got it right, a chance of three. He is sitting at 9-4 in front
2:04:41 > 2:04:46with two ends to go. He had it in his pocket. As it is now, it is all
2:04:46 > 2:04:56to play for.Absolutely.
2:04:56 > 2:04:59to play for.Absolutely.Saying that David, it is easier sitting up here
2:04:59 > 2:05:03in the box. You haven't got the wrong shot yet!No, that's true, but
2:05:03 > 2:05:06you know, you get to see what the percentages are John, and I think
2:05:06 > 2:05:11that was one of the more obvious ones, but maybe they felt that the
2:05:11 > 2:05:16bowls just didn't sit right for it, but it looked good. I think Nicky
2:05:16 > 2:05:22Brett would have played it. Let's put it that way.A loose start. Both
2:05:22 > 2:05:33players need to be closer.Year after year you see the key moments
2:05:33 > 2:05:39in a match and just occasionally you have to take a risk to win a title.
2:05:39 > 2:05:54I thought it was up.He's better... . They both prefer this fore hand,
2:05:54 > 2:05:59but the jack is more open in the backhand. It has rarely been used
2:05:59 > 2:06:13though. Jamie is calling it to move. APPLAUSE
2:06:13 > 2:06:24Either your green ones.Open it up.
2:06:29 > 2:06:33I'm not surprised, relying on Greg to move the heavyweight ball to move
2:06:33 > 2:06:37the front ones. Looking for a good result and that's pretty good
2:06:37 > 2:06:41because he has opened it right up. That in from the spot. That's the
2:06:41 > 2:06:45benefit of having a lead that can play those things and it has been a
2:06:45 > 2:06:50feature for both leads actually this this match. They are both very
2:06:50 > 2:07:00capable, all-round players.This isn't easy.
2:07:04 > 2:07:07APPLAUSE That's narrowed down the jack. He
2:07:07 > 2:07:13can still get to a full jack, but it's certainly not easy. I think at
2:07:13 > 2:07:17this stage in the game Nick will be thinking to himself, "I can maybe
2:07:17 > 2:07:24get a close ball and then go chasing it."
2:07:28 > 2:07:36That's the first bowl for the draw.
2:07:36 > 2:07:51He has a good line.Yes. Good second. That's what he wanted.
2:07:51 > 2:08:00That stays there, he might well chasing with the next one.
2:08:00 > 2:08:02chasing with the next one. Oh John McCain European Commission you're
2:08:02 > 2:08:08heavy.It's not bad though, David. It's a good starter for him.It
2:08:08 > 2:08:12depends how brave you're feeling, mate.Exactly. If he gets the edge
2:08:12 > 2:08:17of the jack on the respot, that's a perfect bowl.Jack in the ditch or
2:08:17 > 2:08:22will bowl out.Bowl out is actually OK.Or a good second.Oh. Edge of
2:08:22 > 2:08:27the jack, surely. Edge of the jack is perfect. If you're going to
2:08:27 > 2:08:34gamble this is probably the one to gamble with a second bowl.Yes,
2:08:34 > 2:08:45absolutely. I think he ends up with a bowl six inches in front.
2:08:45 > 2:08:47LAUGHTER Well, he must have said something
2:08:47 > 2:08:52there, because he knew it was tight. I think Jamie has to go for this
2:08:52 > 2:08:58spot here.I tried to play it inside and I turned.Well, you don't want
2:08:58 > 2:09:06to frame it.He's playing fore hand. He can pass that green either side
2:09:06 > 2:09:09and he is probably better on the outside.Yes, I think he is.Rather
2:09:09 > 2:09:13than the inside.He wants second shot. That's his target. He doesn't
2:09:13 > 2:09:21want to frame the jack.He doesn't want to get too close.
2:09:21 > 2:09:23APPLAUSE It's not ideal because if Nick plays
2:09:23 > 2:09:28the same line he'll get off that bowl.And that's the trouble.That
2:09:28 > 2:09:32needed to be on a leng. It needed to be another foot heavier and that
2:09:32 > 2:09:35would have been a perfect bowl. As it is, he's lying two, which is
2:09:35 > 2:09:42good. But no, it is not great in terms of the way they're lying. The
2:09:42 > 2:09:46problem for Nicky is, the shot bowl, he doesn't want to get the shot bowl
2:09:46 > 2:09:49clean into the jack otherwise it is much over.Well, you know, what
2:09:49 > 2:09:53we're talking about John, I suppose, is coming into there and then the
2:09:53 > 2:09:57potential of getting on to the jack. The jack moves, if that, if he hits
2:09:57 > 2:10:00the bowl on that, the jack moves and the jack goes into this position.
2:10:00 > 2:10:05What he doesn't want is the other one, Dave, into the jack.If I gets
2:10:05 > 2:10:10- the difficulty is if he gets the jack, as you say John, but if he
2:10:10 > 2:10:14gets into the bowl then well, everything is, that's a match.
2:10:14 > 2:10:17That's over. The match has gone because what will happen is that the
2:10:17 > 2:10:22jack will end up back in this position and all these bowls and the
2:10:22 > 2:10:27reds will count. So...Jamie had three meters, four meters to draw
2:10:27 > 2:10:32another.Well and he'll lie three. That's the one he doesn't want.Yes.
2:10:32 > 2:10:40This has to be the jack really, I think, or nothing.
2:10:41 > 2:10:48He's under it. He wants to stay away now.Well, he has lost a two with
2:10:48 > 2:10:53one more to come. Three up into the last end.
2:10:53 > 2:10:59The first set again.Yes. You wouldn't bank on it, but he has a
2:10:59 > 2:11:03real chance to put this one in, another bowl here.Just as well he
2:11:03 > 2:11:08didn't get his own bowl, that would have been a shake hands job. This is
2:11:08 > 2:11:11a nothing to nothing for Jamie. A nice quiet draw here and makes
2:11:11 > 2:11:19another one.Outside green bowl, he has to be careful. Can't afford to
2:11:19 > 2:11:24touch THe will aplay this nice weight, I think.He wants a wide
2:11:24 > 2:11:29line and just trickle in. He doesn't want to hit the green bowl. It's OK
2:11:29 > 2:11:33if he's on the outside. He'll bend back.Has he got a straightener? He
2:11:33 > 2:11:38has and he missed a chance. That happened in the first set as well.
2:11:38 > 2:11:42The last bowl to win the match. I think if he'd of drawn that, that
2:11:42 > 2:11:54would have been enough. As it is, there is a possibility of a three.
2:11:54 > 2:12:00That's amazing, isn't it? Jamie last bowl. Both times to really nail the
2:12:00 > 2:12:06game.But they are in a good position. It is the world pairs
2:12:06 > 2:12:15final. Three up playing the last. Take that any day.
2:12:24 > 2:12:30I think Jamie will be sitting there thinking, "Oh my goodness me. I had
2:12:30 > 2:12:43to be careful." Four shots, really hard to get them when you need them.
2:12:45 > 2:12:49Well, you can the difference with the just the three. That's obvious
2:12:49 > 2:12:55because of the second set. They're three up with the ends won. That's
2:12:55 > 2:13:00the difference, whenever the Chestney Dawes combination have been
2:13:00 > 2:13:03scoring. It is caused by that three in the last end of the first set and
2:13:03 > 2:13:13of course, that big five. A good bowl by Greg.
2:13:15 > 2:13:17bowl by Greg. He has played over it, but it is in the better position
2:13:17 > 2:13:34than being short.I'd stick with it. Either side of the red.
2:13:43 > 2:13:51Hang around. Not with what weight he doesn't. Oh dear, oh dear. It's OK
2:13:51 > 2:13:55in terms of they can get at it, but Greg had a bit of weight on that
2:13:55 > 2:14:00one.It is unfortunate he doesn't put that right behind the jack.
2:14:00 > 2:14:06Well, he's probably thinking to himself, John, I don't want to be
2:14:06 > 2:14:14short.No.Mark, that's another bowl in the head. Yes.
2:14:14 > 2:14:17APPLAUSE He has played big game, hasn't he,
2:14:17 > 2:14:23he has been the star of the four, really. He has been very consistent.
2:14:23 > 2:14:27You can see what Nicky is looking for here, just to play on to the red
2:14:27 > 2:14:34bowls. He removed one bowl and the other will stay, but it will give
2:14:34 > 2:14:39him a good position. It is controlled weight so if he misses he
2:14:39 > 2:14:47stays on the green.Yes. Essential. Miss.That's what he wanted because
2:14:47 > 2:14:53that gives him an option. It depends what Jamie wants to do
2:14:53 > 2:14:58here, he can go deep here, but he's taking a risk by leaving the head.
2:14:58 > 2:15:05He's forcing, he's really forcing Nicky to play a brilliant bowl and
2:15:05 > 2:15:16one of his bowls looks like it is completely locked in.
2:15:16 > 2:15:20Well, we have a little change there just to get things out of the way.
2:15:20 > 2:15:31There we go. Settle down again.
2:15:41 > 2:15:45He's looking for the cover bowl and wants to go deeper than this. Just
2:15:45 > 2:15:51deep, deep, deep. Not bad, but not perfect. You have got to be quite
2:15:51 > 2:15:56positive, haven't you? Enough to get on to the jack and all the way
2:15:56 > 2:16:02through. The two in the back.Bowl on the jack is what he's looking
2:16:02 > 2:16:07for. The edge of the red, he might scoot the two of them out.A good
2:16:07 > 2:16:10result. APPLAUSE
2:16:10 > 2:16:13That's actually very good. I thought that red bowl, the middle one was
2:16:13 > 2:16:17locked in. If you had hit it clean, but ez hit the green bowl first.
2:16:17 > 2:16:25Goodness me, that's a very good result.
2:16:25 > 2:16:31result. Now then Jamie. The pressure is back on.
2:16:31 > 2:16:37The height looks decent. He has played it well, I think. It was a
2:16:37 > 2:16:43good second.That was a critical bit. Get a decent second in.
2:16:43 > 2:16:47APPLAUSE That's that shot. There is a chance
2:16:47 > 2:16:51to play it through and stop.I thought he would just draw it.I did
2:16:51 > 2:16:56as well. That's a tougher shot to play through and stop. I think at
2:16:56 > 2:17:05this stage if you could draw another bowl and just turn that jack. If you
2:17:05 > 2:17:10played weight on that, everything has to go right. I think a draw
2:17:10 > 2:17:16would be the aerngs Dave. Answer, Dave.A little tickle around the
2:17:16 > 2:17:20corner would be good. Get into this position and then you're sitting
2:17:20 > 2:17:23saying to yourself, I've got two. The pressure is on the opposition
2:17:23 > 2:17:29and if he miss, the best he could hope for is a draw and set. I can
2:17:29 > 2:17:36see what he's going for.He has got to get this perfect any wrong
2:17:36 > 2:17:42connection. Well, he has got the jack through.OK. OK. OK. It's not
2:17:42 > 2:17:44great, but it's OK. LAUGHTER
2:17:44 > 2:17:51Exactly. It's not great, but it's OK!
2:17:52 > 2:17:56We will have to see who is lying here.Everything is a long way away.
2:17:56 > 2:18:07Yes. We have got two bowls left. They need three shots.
2:18:07 > 2:18:17They need three shots. How can green get three shots out of this?
2:18:35 > 2:18:41He could finish it off. One good bowl here. One good bowl will do it.
2:18:41 > 2:18:46Yes.Well, that's a good shot for us in terms of looking at it because
2:18:46 > 2:18:50it's two feet from the edge and we can see it is a good bowl in term of
2:18:50 > 2:18:56line. APPLAUSE
2:18:56 > 2:19:00Well, I just cannot see how on earth they're going to make three out of
2:19:00 > 2:19:08this.
2:19:12 > 2:19:16Well, John, we're always looking at angles and shot options and I just
2:19:16 > 2:19:22can't see anything there to develop what he needs, you know, it depends
2:19:22 > 2:19:27if he's lying two seconds or not. Maybe he is lying two seconds. We
2:19:27 > 2:19:34can't tell. Nothing from Greg. A good effort.
2:19:34 > 2:19:42APPLAUSE Well, in the end, I think the more
2:19:42 > 2:19:48consistent pair won that match and it is fair to say John, it was good
2:19:48 > 2:19:51value for Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney, Dawes was superb.I think
2:19:51 > 2:19:56that was probably the difference today. Mark Dawes' consistency and I
2:19:56 > 2:20:00think worthy winners over the tournament.Yes, absolutely. They
2:20:00 > 2:20:05played some great stuff and they take the second set, 9-5 after
2:20:05 > 2:20:10drawing the first set 6-6. But it is Mark Dawes and Jamie
2:20:10 > 2:20:15Chestney who win the world pairs final here at Potters Leisure
2:20:15 > 2:20:21Resort.
2:20:21 > 2:20:26Resort. Well, right from the start, we expected a very good game.
2:20:26 > 2:20:30Especially when you're talking about the world number one and two, but
2:20:30 > 2:20:34these two, Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney were playing everything
2:20:34 > 2:20:37they needed to play under the circumstances. They were brilliant.
2:20:37 > 2:20:43Nick Brett kept things going for his pair. Mark Dawes was doing a lot of
2:20:43 > 2:20:48damage upfront. He drove in the end and then drew two shots on that one.
2:20:48 > 2:20:51Jamie Chestney when he needed to play a really good bowl, it was
2:20:51 > 2:20:56there, just dropping a little bit on that one, but they were really lying
2:20:56 > 2:21:01three and whilst disappointed with that, it was a good pick up, the
2:21:01 > 2:21:04previous bowl to move the jack and that was the big five. That's where
2:21:04 > 2:21:08the match was won on the sixth end when they picked up the five shots
2:21:08 > 2:21:13to go 6-3 in front. And once again, they are putting
2:21:13 > 2:21:17bowls in all directions. Nothing they could do, the guys in the last
2:21:17 > 2:21:23round, but Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney worthy winners, the
2:21:23 > 2:21:27professional world indoor pairs champions for 2018. Ends won, well
2:21:27 > 2:21:31Harlow and Brett won more ends, but they were heavily hit with a three
2:21:31 > 2:21:36and a five and that's where the total scores came in, but look at
2:21:36 > 2:21:40the touchers, goodness me that was Mark Dawes as well, 17-8. The guys
2:21:40 > 2:21:46were under pressure a lot all the way, Harlow and Brett and Chestney
2:21:46 > 2:21:49and Dawes thoroughly deserve their title.
2:21:51 > 2:21:56We can hear from all four players starting with Greg. Different
2:21:56 > 2:21:59scenario here, but it was always going to be close between four
2:21:59 > 2:22:04players of such quality, and so closely matched?Yes, absolutely, I
2:22:04 > 2:22:08don't think there was too much in the game to be fair. A very high
2:22:08 > 2:22:13standard game. Nick and I played one bad end in the second set and that's
2:22:13 > 2:22:16probably obviously cost us the match, but well played to the boys,
2:22:16 > 2:22:22they played great. I've sort of got a sweet feeling because I actually
2:22:22 > 2:22:27put this pair together a couple of years ago and it has come back to
2:22:27 > 2:22:33bite me in the do-da.You need to have a word with your partner
2:22:33 > 2:22:38afterwards.I will do.When you know each other, how much of a joy is it
2:22:38 > 2:22:42to play, but how difficult is it in the heat of the battle?I think it's
2:22:42 > 2:22:45good to be fair. There was no malice between any of us. We wanted to beat
2:22:45 > 2:22:49them. They wanted to beat us. They bloody beat us!
2:22:49 > 2:22:54They did. They did. Jamie, those who next to you, they've won this title
2:22:54 > 2:23:00before, but it's the first time that you and Mark are lifting the title.
2:23:00 > 2:23:05I'm speech lrs at the moment. I thought the standard, it was a great
2:23:05 > 2:23:12game of bowls and president guys got one result and that gave us a bit of
2:23:12 > 2:23:15momentum in the second set and it could have gone either way just on
2:23:15 > 2:23:21the day. Yeah, thrilled to win our first. That fifth end of the second
2:23:21 > 2:23:25set so we might look at that. That was obviously, sorry Nicky, a huge
2:23:25 > 2:23:29five.Yes, it was. Nicky has got a terrible result with his runner and
2:23:29 > 2:23:34the way the game was going, it never looked like a bibbing count was
2:23:34 > 2:23:39coming so to pick a five up was massive really to be fair.It put
2:23:39 > 2:23:42you massively in the driving seat, but it took you to the victory. You
2:23:42 > 2:23:46had to hold your nerve late on as Nicky and Greg tried hard in the
2:23:46 > 2:23:52final end of the second set. But you've now won a trophy at Potters,
2:23:52 > 2:23:57put into words what it would mean to the pair of you?It is amazing. Put
2:23:57 > 2:24:00together a couple of years ago. Good friends as well and it is good to
2:24:00 > 2:24:08win it with somebody else. You get enjoyment from it all. It is amazed,
2:24:08 > 2:24:12when I started bowling, these are the days you look forward to.You're
2:24:12 > 2:24:18going to have to share some of that with Greg #230r for putting you
2:24:18 > 2:24:31together. Your pairs champions of 2018, Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes.
2:24:31 > 2:24:36APPLAUSE It is presentation time and here to
2:24:36 > 2:24:40make the presentations, your appreciation please for the chief
2:24:40 > 2:24:49digital information officer for Just, that's Giles and the Chief
2:24:49 > 2:24:54Executive of World Bowls Tour. APPLAUSE
2:24:54 > 2:24:58And first to the runners up, ladies and gentlemen, they gave us an
2:24:58 > 2:25:03absolutely terrific final, but please, receiving their runners-up
2:25:03 > 2:25:12cheques, will you welcome Nick Brett and Greg Harlow.
2:25:12 > 2:25:25APPLAUSE And now to the winners, receiving a
2:25:25 > 2:25:32glass goblet each, a cheque and the title of the 2018 Just world indoor
2:25:32 > 2:25:39pairs champions, it is Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes.
2:25:41 > 2:25:51APPLAUSE
2:25:55 > 2:26:00Ladies and gentlemen, one more time, the delighted pair, they've done it,
2:26:00 > 2:26:07the winners, give it up for the 2018 Just World Indoor Pairs Champions,
2:26:07 > 2:26:18Jamie Chestney and Mark Dawes. APPLAUSE
2:26:18 > 2:26:22Great reception for the new champions.
2:26:22 > 2:26:26Jamie Chestney ranked number eight in the world and Mark Dawes 12th,
2:26:26 > 2:26:30they saw off the one and two ranked players in Nick Brett and Greg
2:26:30 > 2:26:35Harlow. A fantastic effort from the winning pair. Just to remind you
2:26:35 > 2:26:38about the Australian Open highlights coming after we come off air on BBC
2:26:38 > 2:26:47Two and that's at 4.45pm today. We're concentrating on the singles
2:26:47 > 2:26:56next and it features the defending champion, Paul Foster against
2:26:56 > 2:27:0267-year-old Lea Blackman. Paul Foster has pulled out of the pairs
2:27:02 > 2:27:06and mixed pairs this year because of the surprise and sudden death of his
2:27:06 > 2:27:11father last week and he is concentrating on defending the title
2:27:11 > 2:27:13he won 12 months ago, but he acknowledges how difficult things
2:27:13 > 2:27:21will be on the blue rink this week. Today's game, I'm not going to tell
2:27:21 > 2:27:27lies, it will be difficult. I'm not looking for excuses, it's not me. I
2:27:27 > 2:27:32know out there, I've just got to try and do a professional job. Things
2:27:32 > 2:27:36are going well for me, great. I know there will be times when I will have
2:27:36 > 2:27:41a few slack ends and things don't go for me, and I will be thinking about
2:27:41 > 2:27:46him. I have got to get on with it. That's what he'd want. I know my
2:27:46 > 2:27:57family want that as well. I will have to do what I can. It's close.
2:27:57 > 2:28:02It has always been good to go back to Potters, especially defending
2:28:02 > 2:28:13champion. It has been a quiet year. I always enjoy it down here.
2:28:13 > 2:28:16Everybody was talking about it is my 20th year. It is a long time ago,
2:28:16 > 2:28:22but I still remember it well at Preston and beating Mervin cap king
2:28:22 > 2:28:25in the final and it was a great match and I'm still here 20 years
2:28:25 > 2:28:32on.He's overweight. He's going to say bye. The new champion of the
2:28:32 > 2:28:36world, looked at that smile. My whole family was there that day and
2:28:36 > 2:28:41I had never been involved in anything like that in my life and to
2:28:41 > 2:28:44be in a world film, it was surreal. I didn't know what was happening and
2:28:44 > 2:28:53I kept doing what I was doing and it was a very proud moment.The 2017
2:28:53 > 2:28:57world indoor singles champion, Paul Foster MBE.I have been fortunate to
2:28:57 > 2:29:02hold the title five times and if I get a sixth, great. If I don't, it's
2:29:02 > 2:29:06not the end of the world. A lot of things have been put in prospective
2:29:06 > 2:29:11now. Bowls has been really good to me, but family comes first.
2:29:11 > 2:29:15Family does indeed come first, but if Paul Foster can keep his mind on
2:29:15 > 2:29:19the game this week, then, of course, is very much the man to beat, but he
2:29:19 > 2:29:25is up against a thraented player in 67-year-old Lea Blackman who only
2:29:25 > 2:29:32started playing the sport 14 years ago when he retired from his job as
2:29:32 > 2:29:38a human resources manager at an Asset Management company.
2:29:38 > 2:29:48I am Lea Blackman. I'm 67. I think the oldest English qualifier ever
2:29:48 > 2:29:52and the only qualifier from East Anglia which is rather nice. I
2:29:52 > 2:29:56qualified at Bromley Indoor Club which is one of four qualifying
2:29:56 > 2:30:01places in England and it is a process over eight or nine, ten
2:30:01 > 2:30:07hours and a straight knock-out competition. Anyone can enter these
2:30:07 > 2:30:12competition and if you're lucky like me, you can end up in this fantastic
2:30:12 > 2:30:15arena at the World Championships. I'm not expected to win. I'm the
2:30:15 > 2:30:23under dog. There is no pressure on me. I feel very relaxed and I intend
2:30:23 > 2:30:27to be very focussed and give him as hard a time as possible. I'm not
2:30:27 > 2:30:33coming out here just to make up the numbers. I'm coming out here to win.
2:30:33 > 2:30:40I only started bowling, I rolled my first bowl when I was 53. So, you
2:30:40 > 2:30:49know, it progressed from there. I have won a number of sort of county
2:30:49 > 2:30:53and national titles and it has progressed and this so far is the
2:30:53 > 2:30:58pinnacle of my achievements. My wife is here. The family is two children
2:30:58 > 2:31:05and four grand kids and they are all watching at home. Plus I will have
2:31:05 > 2:31:11supporters from a number of clubs really which is rather nice. So, I
2:31:11 > 2:31:16hope there will be a lot of people here making quite a lot of noise for
2:31:16 > 2:31:17me.
2:31:17 > 2:31:18going to help in terms of drying to draw the shot.
2:31:18 > 2:31:25What a story. David alongside me again. Incredible progression in 14
2:31:25 > 2:31:30years from picking up a bowl for the first time 14 years ago?Yes. My
2:31:30 > 2:31:34goodness, he retired early didn't he when you think about it.He worked
2:31:34 > 2:31:39for an Asset Management company!I know Lee, he's coming over the play
2:31:39 > 2:31:44against us in the national team and he's a very good player, no doubt,
2:31:44 > 2:31:49but this is a massive league, it really is. It's that movement to
2:31:49 > 2:31:54play up against the top players. He hasn't got one of the lesser seeds,
2:31:54 > 2:31:59he has Paul Foster and that is really tough. What would he be
2:31:59 > 2:32:02feeling now if you could put yourself in his shoes given his
2:32:02 > 2:32:09opponents?Really he'll be thinking to himself, get on the score card,
2:32:09 > 2:32:14basic as that. He'll want to get off and running, build up and work his
2:32:14 > 2:32:19way through. We know about Paul's situation, but he's a dedicated
2:32:19 > 2:32:25professional for 20 years, Paul Foster. He'll go out there to do a
2:32:25 > 2:32:28job and won't underestimate someone like Lee because he knows he's come
2:32:28 > 2:32:31through the qualifiers and they are not easy.Indeed. The players just
2:32:31 > 2:32:37warming up. Just a little bit more about Paul Foster. We speak about
2:32:37 > 2:32:42his position in the game's Echelons. He's a five-time champion. No matter
2:32:42 > 2:32:47what people say about how difficult things are, he is the man to beat
2:32:47 > 2:32:52just in terms of talent?Yes. Not only that, but to be one of the best
2:32:52 > 2:32:55players in the world, five-times champion, you have to be mentally
2:32:55 > 2:32:59very strong. So from a pure psychological point of view, I think
2:32:59 > 2:33:03Paul will be fine. He's probably worked out how to deal with the
2:33:03 > 2:33:07problems.What about the idea that people say, when you are suffering
2:33:07 > 2:33:10bereavement, it's sometimes gad to have your mind distracted by
2:33:10 > 2:33:13something else, would that be something that you would suggest
2:33:13 > 2:33:17might happen to him this afternoon? Well, yes. I think he'll remove
2:33:17 > 2:33:22himself from that. I had a good chat with him a few days ago and Paul is
2:33:22 > 2:33:27a sort of character that he'll know exactly what everyone wants from him
2:33:27 > 2:33:31and that is a great performance. I think he'll deliver, I really do.
2:33:31 > 2:33:35It's a fascinating match-up for us to watch because of course he has to
2:33:35 > 2:33:39cope with that particular issue, whereas Lee obviously has to cope
2:33:39 > 2:33:43with playing someone like Paul, I guess if we were just talking about
2:33:43 > 2:33:48these two guys in terms of ability you would say Paul could win?Yes
2:33:48 > 2:33:52and by some distance to be truthful. There are many really good players
2:33:52 > 2:33:57that have played at this level before who've won at qualifying and
2:33:57 > 2:34:02the last thing you want to the is face Paul Foster believe me, even if
2:34:02 > 2:34:06you have been there before as a newby, at this stage of his life you
2:34:06 > 2:34:09are sort of thinking, this is the best thing ever and he'll enjoy it.
2:34:09 > 2:34:14Lee's a nice guy. He's a happy chap, he's not a down sort of guy, he'll
2:34:14 > 2:34:19love it.He was telling me he used to play a lot of ten H pin bowling
2:34:19 > 2:34:23and that was the closest he got to bowling before he started in the
2:34:23 > 2:34:27sport 14 years ago. Thank you very much. Let's just remind you of the
2:34:27 > 2:34:34situation:
2:34:58 > 2:35:02Those are the players through to the second round of the singles. So who
2:35:02 > 2:35:07will join them? Paul Foster, the five-time champion or the newcomer
2:35:07 > 2:35:10to this event, Lea Blackham? Here is our MC to welcome the players
2:35:10 > 2:35:11to this event, Lea Blackham? Here is our MC to welcome the players out.
2:35:11 > 2:35:18Thank you very much. This grandfather from Colchester has many
2:35:18 > 2:35:21national titles to his credit and is absolutely delighted to have
2:35:21 > 2:35:28qualified for the event. A national over 60s champion, your appreciation
2:35:28 > 2:35:30please for Lea Blackham.
2:35:31 > 2:35:36APPLAUSE. MUSIC
2:35:36 > 2:35:41MUSIC Simply the Best...
2:35:51 > 2:35:59And now to a true Master Of The Game and the only player ever to win all
2:35:59 > 2:36:03WBT titles. Ladies and gentlemen, five times and the defending World
2:36:03 > 2:36:10Indoor Singles champion, it's Paul Foster MBE.
2:36:10 > 2:36:18MUSIC The Eye of the Tiger...
2:36:24 > 2:36:30Time to get this first round match under way. We can head up to the
2:36:30 > 2:36:32commentary box where David and John are waiting for us.
2:36:32 > 2:36:38Thank you. Only a short sprint up here, so no real problem!
2:36:38 > 2:36:43And really this has got to be the most daunting situation for, well
2:36:43 > 2:36:48first of all it's hard for any player but someone with, I think
2:36:48 > 2:36:52it's fair to say, limited experience at the very top level, John. That's
2:36:52 > 2:36:59not being disrespectful to Lea but he knows that. I've played against
2:36:59 > 2:37:05him when he's been over in Northern Ireland. But it's a tough one.It
2:37:05 > 2:37:11certainly is. Paul Foster a great player. Five-time winner of this
2:37:11 > 2:37:17event. I'm sure Lea will look forward to this. Whatever happens,
2:37:17 > 2:37:24the experience will be good for him.
2:37:24 > 2:37:35There's also an element of, I have got absolutely nothing to lose.
2:37:35 > 2:37:38got absolutely nothing to lose. He's going to really enjoy it. He's a
2:37:38 > 2:37:42really nice, upbeat guy. I'm sure he'll give it everything he has and
2:37:42 > 2:37:51see what happens. Paul Foster hasn't played in the pairs, or mixed pairs,
2:37:51 > 2:38:00hasn't had the time on the green that he'd normally have.
2:38:00 > 2:38:05Unfortunately, Paul lost his dad. I'm sure we'd all like to send
2:38:05 > 2:38:11condolences to he and his family. His dad was a really great guy, a
2:38:11 > 2:38:14good supporter of Paul. We send condolences to the family and to
2:38:14 > 2:38:18Paul. It's an emotional time for him to come out here today and defend
2:38:18 > 2:38:25his title under the circumstances, David?Yes, it is. You have to be
2:38:25 > 2:38:30very mentally strong to have won all the events he has won, but this is a
2:38:30 > 2:38:37different situation, an emotional one. He will put as much as he
2:38:37 > 2:38:43possibly can into the back of his mind. We were talking about
2:38:43 > 2:38:52occasionally, you just want to dip and start thinking and don't want to
2:38:52 > 2:38:55get distracted. He'll be looking to do his best under the circumstances
2:38:55 > 2:38:58and play as well as he can.
2:39:24 > 2:39:35The advantage for Lea is that he's not had too far to go from where he
2:39:35 > 2:39:38lives in Colchester.
2:39:58 > 2:40:05Close with this one and a chance. Oh, yes, played it well.
2:40:11 > 2:40:21Very good first for both players.
2:40:28 > 2:40:38David Gourlay, an interested spectator.
2:40:54 > 2:40:58Well, that's exactly what Lea had to do, get on the card early. He
2:40:58 > 2:41:04doesn't want to be chasing a Blank side of the card. That's a nervous
2:41:04 > 2:41:11thing really. Trying to get a shot or two, or three or four on it. It
2:41:11 > 2:41:14really is a situation where he can settle down. He's managed that and
2:41:14 > 2:41:20can build on it. It's the same at any level of bowls. Whether it be
2:41:20 > 2:41:27club or world singles, you want to get on the ball -- on the board.
2:41:27 > 2:41:35Settles the butterflies.
2:41:35 > 2:41:38It will be interesting to see whether Paul Foster gets the
2:41:38 > 2:41:45opportunity to get the jack when it goes 23, 24 metres. I've no doubt he
2:41:45 > 2:41:52will.
2:41:57 > 2:42:07APPLAUSE.
2:42:35 > 2:42:39When it comes to Paul Foster, he's been everything in the game and done
2:42:39 > 2:42:43everything in the game that he really wants to do.
2:42:43 > 2:42:47APPLAUSE.
2:42:51 > 2:42:56When you see profiles, and we have them for Paul going back 20 years,
2:42:56 > 2:43:02but when it's multiple pages, well, as you know he's been about a long
2:43:02 > 2:43:06time.A top, top player.
2:43:10 > 2:43:17APPLAUSE.
2:43:17 > 2:43:25Good bowl by Lea.
2:43:36 > 2:43:46Oh, a good reply. APPLAUSE.
2:43:56 > 2:44:01The profile of him is extensively completed in hand writing that you
2:44:01 > 2:44:07can actually read! Which helps. Don't get a lot of information
2:44:07 > 2:44:17sometimes on the players.
2:44:18 > 2:44:24Ooh. He nearly got that on the run-through.Yes. Played a firm
2:44:24 > 2:44:29delivery. There were opportunities there. A few chances obviously just
2:44:29 > 2:44:37inside the line.
2:44:38 > 2:44:46Paul Foster probably not going to bother. And he's not sure.
2:44:46 > 2:44:55APPLAUSE. 1-1 after two ends.
2:45:10 > 2:45:20Paul's ball down the rink. The jack is delivered.26 metres.
2:45:44 > 2:45:48Lea Blackham retired at the very young age of 54. People think back
2:45:48 > 2:45:53home that's a good way to spend your life if you can do it. He keeps
2:45:53 > 2:46:00himself well and fit.
2:46:13 > 2:46:22Paul normally uses a wide swinging ball.
2:46:28 > 2:46:37Certainly it's the same manufacturer. Depending on the rink,
2:46:37 > 2:46:41Paul doesn't really change bowls very much. He's a tendency to stay
2:46:41 > 2:46:52to the model he's used to.
2:47:16 > 2:47:26Problems now in the back position. One down.
2:47:26 > 2:47:30One down. Steady delivery.
2:47:54 > 2:47:58Still struggling is it? Oh, he's got a clear road, thought he was going
2:47:58 > 2:48:06to get caught on the red. APPLAUSE.
2:48:06 > 2:48:13It's certainly a shot on, isn't it? The back two as well...
2:48:13 > 2:48:22It looks better on the forehand. There is no space on it.
2:48:22 > 2:48:24There is no space on it. Oh, clean as a whistle and right in on top of
2:48:24 > 2:48:31it.
2:48:35 > 2:48:40Didn't mess about with that, did he? Played it well. Clean strike on the
2:48:40 > 2:48:52jack.Problem with having three short bowls for Paul Foster. He was
2:48:52 > 2:49:00going to lose multiples and Blackham has started off extremely well here.
2:49:33 > 2:49:39APPLAUSE.
2:49:57 > 2:50:02APPLAUSE. The question is, how long will it be
2:50:02 > 2:50:07before Paul Foster goes short?Good opener by Paul there.
2:50:08 > 2:50:13Lea set out a stall that he prefers the longer jack length, no doubt
2:50:13 > 2:50:21about that.
2:50:33 > 2:50:38Waving at that. You get the impression something is wrong.
2:50:38 > 2:50:47Something up when he does that. Yes, that's the trouble.
2:51:09 > 2:51:23Decent bowl. Drops inside that, he'll probably score for two.
2:51:36 > 2:51:41He punches on to the red and the jack moves, it's coming to him...
2:51:41 > 2:51:47So definitely worth playing to it.
2:52:05 > 2:52:11I don't think he needed that.It looked like a forehand shot. On the
2:52:11 > 2:52:15back hand he was moving it but the red bowl was going with the jack,
2:52:15 > 2:52:27whereas on the forehand, the red bowl was going away from the jack.
2:52:36 > 2:52:44That's unlike Paul Foster.
2:52:55 > 2:53:00It's also quite difficult to come on after a very good final, the
2:53:00 > 2:53:05previous match. People have moved out of the arena and they're coming
2:53:05 > 2:53:10back in again.I think it's always difficult coming in after a final
2:53:10 > 2:53:18like that as well. There's a lot of movement, the crowd go out.
2:53:18 > 2:53:20Atmospheric conditions change.
2:53:26 > 2:53:32It's never easy in these situations. You can drop a yard very quickly. It
2:53:32 > 2:53:36will take the players a few ends. It's a very good start by Lea, I
2:53:36 > 2:53:42have to say. Excellent drive for the treble.
2:53:42 > 2:53:51He has had success in the game.
2:53:57 > 2:54:022012, the Suffolk singles champion. That is no mane feat. Quite a lot of
2:54:02 > 2:54:08gad bowlers involved there. He's won other things with regards to the
2:54:08 > 2:54:13over 60s nationals and again, in England that's not easy. -- no mean
2:54:13 > 2:54:17feat.
2:54:19 > 2:54:24This will be a step up in class because, at some point, you would
2:54:24 > 2:54:28expect Paul to put a lot of close bowls on this end. He'll start
2:54:28 > 2:54:30asking a few questions of him.
2:54:32 > 2:54:45Close with this. Yes, he's got it. Dropped down.
2:55:03 > 2:55:05A touch on that.
2:55:12 > 2:55:20Paul reckoned he was well up with that bowl.
2:55:20 > 2:55:34that bowl. The crowd will come in...
2:55:42 > 2:55:48He'll come back strong in the second set as he gets into his game. Lea
2:55:48 > 2:55:55started well. Played some very good bowls already.
2:55:55 > 2:56:02Inside line.
2:56:13 > 2:56:23Not an easy last bowl shot to score.
2:56:45 > 2:56:54He's very, very happy to accept that.
2:57:44 > 2:57:52Another good start.
2:58:04 > 2:58:13Good reply by Paul.
2:58:52 > 2:58:54APPLAUSE.
2:59:03 > 2:59:09He's going again. Attacking with this bowl.Played it well.
2:59:09 > 2:59:16Previously he got the jack absolutely clean. Can't blame him.
2:59:25 > 2:59:31I hope John is out there listening.
2:59:31 > 2:59:38It's not what he wanted but takes that shot away.Well, brings in the
2:59:38 > 2:59:45tiny shot on the other side now on the back hand. Takes a forehand
2:59:45 > 2:59:57drive out but the back hand is still available.
3:00:09 > 3:00:14He's just a drawing with this one, Dave.Yes. Good effort.Big try.
3:00:14 > 3:00:20He's drawn this.After a drive. That's the problem for Paul Foster
3:00:20 > 3:00:27isn't it. The last was one bowl as well. The three that he picked up
3:00:27 > 3:00:33was one bowl as well so this is where the danger can be with a lot
3:00:33 > 3:00:36of players. Four bowls out there but if they get in with one, it can be
3:00:36 > 3:00:41enough.He did well there actually from playing the weighted bowl.
3:00:41 > 3:00:52Dropped off into the back hand and drew it dead and nailed it.
3:00:52 > 3:00:58I thought he would have played just a reaching bowl. But he's building
3:00:58 > 3:01:03up a tidy little lead here.
3:01:14 > 3:01:19If he scores the next end, well he's favourite to take the set. The thing
3:01:19 > 3:01:24about that is, all the pressure then transfers across to Paul Foster. Not
3:01:24 > 3:01:28only does he have to win the second, but he will have to win the
3:01:28 > 3:01:33tie-break.
3:01:36 > 3:01:39tie-break.Difficult for Paul to come here after what happened and it
3:01:39 > 3:01:44depends on as well what's going on in his mind and his mental state. He
3:01:44 > 3:01:47won't be as sharp as he would have liked to have been. It's a tough one
3:01:47 > 3:01:50for him.It is.
3:01:50 > 3:01:53liked to have been. It's a tough one for him.It is. And under the
3:01:53 > 3:01:55circumstances people wouldn't have been surprised if he had withdrawn.
3:01:55 > 3:02:00I think if he hadn't been defending champion, he probably would have, it
3:02:00 > 3:02:07wouldn't hurt him for one year. He has got many, many years ahead of
3:02:07 > 3:02:10him, but because he was defending champion, he wanted to be here for
3:02:10 > 3:02:16the singles.I'm sure he wants to do well for his father as well, but
3:02:16 > 3:02:21it's a tough one and full credit to him today to come out and defend his
3:02:21 > 3:02:33title.Two good bowls. Two good lead bowls.
3:02:52 > 3:03:00Not a bad bowl there.
3:03:14 > 3:03:20A clean road would be better and just the edge.A little bit unlucky
3:03:20 > 3:03:26with that. The gap is three inches. He has a good position here. He has
3:03:26 > 3:03:31got his own bowl to use and he can afford to use this. Punch the red
3:03:31 > 3:03:34bowl out and turn the jack around the corner. Worth arriving with a
3:03:34 > 3:03:41little bit of weight.
3:03:41 > 3:03:44little bit of weight. If he has got the run in, he's on a very good line
3:03:44 > 3:03:52here. He has the running. This is close. Yes.
3:03:56 > 3:04:00APPLAUSE A nice positive bowl by Lea there.
3:04:00 > 3:04:04Plenty of opportunities off the side of that bowl. Gets the jack.He
3:04:04 > 3:04:08could have made it a double as well. Paul is playing weighted. He doesn't
3:04:08 > 3:04:13like it much.Gets a result. Gets the green solid.A little touch on
3:04:13 > 3:04:20the jack on the way through. I think he has turned it into one red. A
3:04:20 > 3:04:24good conversion shot.Yes, he did well. Solid on the green into the
3:04:24 > 3:04:30back green. A little bit of moment on the jack.I was looking at his
3:04:30 > 3:04:33face as that bowl was coming down, I don't think he was too sure about
3:04:33 > 3:04:38the result he was going to get. Never is when there is distance
3:04:38 > 3:04:46between the bowl you're hitting, David, you're never quite certain.
3:04:47 > 3:04:54Fore hand, Lea Blackham is on a good line. It depends on his weight. He
3:04:54 > 3:04:59is not far away from the jack. It needs to stop though. And it has. He
3:04:59 > 3:05:07played that well. APPLAUSE
3:05:07 > 3:05:11He is asking a lot of questions of Paul Foster here and we are at the
3:05:11 > 3:05:15business end now. We are saeventh end of a nine end set. Paul Foster
3:05:15 > 3:05:21really can't afford to lose this end. A little runner down the
3:05:21 > 3:05:27backhand. A little timing shot. Now is he going to get a good
3:05:27 > 3:05:39connection? Oh, didn't want the edge.
3:05:39 > 3:05:44Oh, didn't want the edge.Another single.
3:05:46 > 3:05:54Playing well.Playing solid at the moment.
3:05:54 > 3:06:00Well, he is certainly looking good for the first set. There hadn't been
3:06:00 > 3:06:04a situation building twos and threes really the way that things have been
3:06:04 > 3:06:10sitting. Obviously Lea drove the jack into the ditch, but there
3:06:10 > 3:06:20haven't been the threes and fours for either player.
3:06:48 > 3:06:53Paul needs to score on this end. Ideally he needs a double or a
3:06:53 > 3:07:08treble to get him back into the set. A decent opening. Good weight.
3:07:09 > 3:07:11A decent opening. Good weight. The winner of this match will play the
3:07:11 > 3:07:17winner of Jason Greenslade and Robert Gordon. That's a big game for
3:07:17 > 3:07:24Jason. He needs some points at the lower end of the ranking. He needs
3:07:24 > 3:07:34points Jason. It's an important game for him. He's on the edge.
3:07:34 > 3:07:36for him. He's on the edge. There are some tasty second round matches
3:07:36 > 3:07:44coming up. Let's see how Paul gets on with this one. A decent line. Now
3:07:44 > 3:07:56is the weight? Oh, pacing through a bit.
3:07:59 > 3:08:10Mark Royal, Andrew Kelly, Nick Brett and Mervin King. : There is some
3:08:10 > 3:08:25great stuff there. Played it. Pressure on. Set lie.
3:08:27 > 3:08:39He's not sure. He sort of knew that wasn't right out of the hand and
3:08:39 > 3:08:44there is reasons why we're not seeing the real Paul Foster here and
3:08:44 > 3:08:52it's testing for him.
3:08:53 > 3:08:57it's testing for him. Lea is playing steady bowls and on occasion some
3:08:57 > 3:09:00very good bowls and it's keeping Paul Foster under pressure, but he's
3:09:00 > 3:09:07looking very good for this first set now.
3:09:12 > 3:09:16now.Paul needs to just draw one in here on the backhand side. Normally
3:09:16 > 3:09:23he is so good on this hand.Once again, he didn't look terribly
3:09:23 > 3:09:26positive. It will be closer this one, there is no doubt about that.
3:09:26 > 3:09:32But will he get back in time? That's the question. Well, might be enough
3:09:32 > 3:09:40to give him a single. Want it had full for a double.
3:09:45 > 3:09:53full for a double. He's not sure. APPLAUSE
3:09:53 > 3:10:03Paul Foster had a quick look. He has decided it was against him.
3:10:03 > 3:10:04decided it was against him. Ed it full for a double. He's not sure.
3:10:04 > 3:10:06APPLAUSE Paul Foster had a quick look. He has
3:10:06 > 3:10:09decided it was against him. He would have needed four in the last end if
3:10:09 > 3:10:14it had been a single, John, but 8-2, it's not looking great for the
3:10:14 > 3:10:25defending champion. He needs to start off fresh in this set.
3:10:25 > 3:10:28start off fresh in this set.Jack length 28.5 meters.I think it is a
3:10:28 > 3:10:32consideration at the moment that possibly Paul's mindset isn't quite
3:10:32 > 3:10:42right. Lea is playing steady bowls, but it's a difficult one.
3:10:48 > 3:10:53APPLAUSE
3:11:05 > 3:11:12You can catch the bowls over the next 24 hours we're on tonight,
3:11:12 > 3:11:177.30pm again, Jason and Robert, as we said it is an important game for
3:11:17 > 3:11:22Jason Greenslade. Tonight, we have got the highlights at 12.15 BBC Two
3:11:22 > 3:11:29and tomorrow we're open again at 10am.
3:11:30 > 3:11:3810am. And then mixed pairs final tomorrow afternoon.
3:11:38 > 3:11:42The open singles, well, that's a great looking match. That will
3:11:42 > 3:11:49follow the pairs on BBC Two.
3:11:49 > 3:11:52follow the pairs on BBC Two. Some nice stuff there, John.Yes, some
3:11:52 > 3:12:01good games to look forward to. That's a good bowl by Paul.
3:12:01 > 3:12:06I know we will be here watching, but I think we will be watching them
3:12:06 > 3:12:10anyway because there is some fantastic matches there. We've got
3:12:10 > 3:12:15the prime seat. Well, not really the prime seat, but a lot of monitors in
3:12:15 > 3:12:20front of us, but we can see everything. It's warm and cosy,
3:12:20 > 3:12:27David, isn't it?It is certainly that, yes.
3:12:27 > 3:12:31that, yes.Just overweight. A good effort.Paul Foster is holding a
3:12:31 > 3:12:38singing at the moment by the looks of it.
3:12:40 > 3:12:44of it. We're back into the short clock, of course, running down from
3:12:44 > 3:12:5230 seconds. Paul will take a time-out and add another 60 on. When
3:12:52 > 3:12:58it gets down to five or six, he'll indicate.Paul has four time-outs
3:12:58 > 3:13:03remaining.
3:13:03 > 3:13:11remaining.The time-outs, they are allowed in the first two sets.He
3:13:11 > 3:13:17would probably play the hack hand side to try and get to those green
3:13:17 > 3:13:23bowl.If he just edges the green and just lies it down, he'll get three
3:13:23 > 3:13:31from it.
3:13:31 > 3:13:40from it.A really good effort by Paul. He was unfortunate then.
3:13:40 > 3:13:42APPLAUSE Back to the backhand again after
3:13:42 > 3:13:48playing the fore hand. It depends how much weight he wants to use. The
3:13:48 > 3:13:56danger is going tee heavy. -- going too heavy. He has to make a positive
3:13:56 > 3:14:00impact on the front bowl, but if it goes with the jack and Paul Foster
3:14:00 > 3:14:11has got the last bowl he could be no better off.
3:14:12 > 3:14:15better off. I can't see him getting the split without the jack moving.
3:14:15 > 3:14:22It's just so close to that front bowl so. Let's just see how much
3:14:22 > 3:14:25weight he's using because this is a hard shot fur' not used to it.I
3:14:25 > 3:14:30don't think it will hold out. It will go on the inside line. It goes
3:14:30 > 3:14:34away quick, David.I quite like the weight he used. But he was on the
3:14:34 > 3:14:37wrong line for that weight. It is hard to pick out the right weight.
3:14:37 > 3:14:41Those are the sort of shots that Paul Foster needs to force Lea into
3:14:41 > 3:14:44playing because they are low percentage as you know John and
3:14:44 > 3:14:49especially if
3:14:53 > 3:14:56especially if you're new to the carpet. Not an easy one for Paul to
3:14:56 > 3:15:00add, but if he gets the green bowl at the right angle, he can make four
3:15:00 > 3:15:03out of it.Played it well. A good bowl by Paul.Well played Paul
3:15:03 > 3:15:11Foster. Three definite. But it looks like four to me.
3:15:11 > 3:15:20UMPIRE:Four shots, Paul Foster.A little touch was enough.Yeah, a
3:15:20 > 3:15:33very good start to the second set for Paul. It will be a boost.
3:15:38 > 3:15:50The jack leng is 26 meters. -- the jack length is 26 meters.
3:16:02 > 3:16:10APPLAUSE
3:16:41 > 3:16:45He's there or thereabouts again. A nice spot that.Just running through
3:16:45 > 3:16:51a shade, but it will not do any harm back there. Lea will be just looking
3:16:51 > 3:16:58to arrive at his bowl, drop down off it.
3:17:08 > 3:17:13Well, it is a wonderful situation, John, when you think about it. We're
3:17:13 > 3:17:18one of the very few sports when you can take up the sport at any age and
3:17:18 > 3:17:22enter the qualifiers and end up against the world champion. There is
3:17:22 > 3:17:26very few sports where that is actually available to you. Pay your
3:17:26 > 3:17:31money to the professional bowl association and get into it and take
3:17:31 > 3:17:35your chance and suddenly you're on television live against the world
3:17:35 > 3:17:41champion.
3:17:46 > 3:17:52Yes, close to it. Bowled and jack. He didn't get the jack, but he got
3:17:52 > 3:17:58the bowl clean and that's enough, I think.
3:17:58 > 3:18:02APPLAUSE He hit that one well, more positive.
3:18:02 > 3:18:06He will use the weighted bowl and it is normally pretty close as well.He
3:18:06 > 3:18:10doesn't want to get sucked into playing the controlled shots. Keep
3:18:10 > 3:18:16to the strong stuff because he's good at it. He's accurate and Paul's
3:18:16 > 3:18:25lost his way with the last one. This is the time when Paul has to just
3:18:25 > 3:18:31try and get himself right. It's a hard thing to ask him to do, but
3:18:31 > 3:18:35everybody handles things in different ways, but it's tough now
3:18:35 > 3:18:42for him. He's changed from That from one into three.
3:18:42 > 3:18:51APPLAUSE UMPIRE: Three shots, Lea Blackham.
3:18:51 > 3:19:03Well, after losing a four, you couldn't ask for much better.
3:19:30 > 3:19:41The jack length is 29 meters.
3:19:52 > 3:19:55A long jack again. A good start by Lea.
3:19:55 > 3:20:04APPLAUSE
3:20:27 > 3:20:33Once again Lea is sticking to the longer jack length. It has been very
3:20:33 > 3:20:43successful for him. Dropping inside.
3:20:57 > 3:21:04Well, a better second, but still not close enough.
3:21:23 > 3:21:27He just overplayed that. It is not a bad spot, but a missed opportunity
3:21:27 > 3:21:33really.Yeah, over corrected it with a short bowl, that was the problem
3:21:33 > 3:21:37and better behind it obviously, but Paul is just on the draw. Just wants
3:21:37 > 3:21:43to sneak past the green one. Well, his weight wasn't bad actually
3:21:43 > 3:21:46because he pushed that about three or four inches so he probably had
3:21:46 > 3:21:54enough weight. Paul Foster wants to get hold of
3:21:54 > 3:21:59that jack.
3:22:13 > 3:22:18I think it is a similar bowl for Paul. He could get off the second
3:22:18 > 3:22:25bowl, the red. A similar weight, I think.Yes, even a foot more just to
3:22:25 > 3:22:29turn his own bowl over if he doesn't get back into the head. He needs to
3:22:29 > 3:22:36reach.Played it well.Has he got to turn it? Not quite. That's what I
3:22:36 > 3:22:40was thinking he would play just slightly over.Very unfortunate. He
3:22:40 > 3:22:46was so close then.Well, not the single shot that's the problem, it
3:22:46 > 3:22:51is the jack length.
3:23:01 > 3:23:11Well, he is keeping the mat right back on the three meter T mark.
3:23:11 > 3:23:15Probably quite sensibly at the moment. It keeps a lot of distance
3:23:15 > 3:23:19between Paul and the jack and even though he's not nailing it with
3:23:19 > 3:23:26every bowl, he's playing at least one very good one.
3:24:22 > 3:24:27APPLAUSE Just about.
3:24:27 > 3:24:33Still room there. Paul Foster just on the outside edge
3:24:33 > 3:24:39of the mat even with the strong bias bowl so he can push them out wide
3:24:39 > 3:24:44and let them dip towards the end of its travel.
3:24:44 > 3:24:49APPLAUSE That makes it.
3:25:07 > 3:25:22It's just about reaching. Might get over the seem. No.
3:25:23 > 3:25:31I can tell by Paul's reaction there, whether he liked it or not. He is
3:25:31 > 3:25:37getting back. He has played it well. APPLAUSE
3:25:37 > 3:25:48Still a one. Certainly came off a wide line.
3:26:05 > 3:26:19Just overplayed his chance for Paul Foster to pick up a multiple here.
3:26:20 > 3:26:25Now, is he getting up? He wants to guarantee a second at the very
3:26:25 > 3:26:39least. One shot, Paul Foster.
3:26:40 > 3:26:45APPLAUSE That score 5-4 after four ends.Five
3:26:45 > 3:26:56ends to be played. And Lea Blackham is right in this match. And there is
3:26:56 > 3:27:03the mat up the rink. Well up the rink actually.Jack length 24
3:27:03 > 3:27:08meters. There we see it. And 24 meters. It
3:27:08 > 3:27:13was going to happen sometime. Paul was going to pull the mat up or keep
3:27:13 > 3:27:22it back and play a very short length.
3:27:28 > 3:27:35APPLAUSE
3:27:46 > 3:27:54It's a good bowl. It looks like it is going to reach up to the red one.
3:27:54 > 3:27:56APPLAUSE A cracking line in. Just pulled up
3:27:56 > 3:28:04short.
3:28:07 > 3:28:14Good again here. A clear road. Excellent. Just went down the gap.
3:28:14 > 3:28:19It's there, but an edge in the green one would have been absolutely
3:28:19 > 3:28:35perfect. Lea can afford to reach his own bowl or come off the red one.
3:28:39 > 3:28:51Well, he has missed it, but he has put it into a good position.
3:29:18 > 3:29:24A better line with this.Has he overplayed it though? Will it hold
3:29:24 > 3:29:29off? Actually that weight is very good to play. Just missed the line
3:29:29 > 3:29:35slightly, John. But that's a lovely weight to play the shot. Paul Foster
3:29:35 > 3:29:38has to be through with this because he won't want that green bowl going
3:29:38 > 3:29:43on to the jack and making a three. Yeah, it is a case that Lea maybe
3:29:43 > 3:29:48tempted to play firmer with his last bowl for that type of shot.Well,
3:29:48 > 3:29:51Paul has seen the danger and he knew he had to be there. It might still
3:29:51 > 3:29:58be worth it actually.I thinkits still worth it. -- I think it's
3:29:58 > 3:30:04still worth it.
3:30:04 > 3:30:11It's close to the second, isn't it? Very close. Not a lot in that. It is
3:30:11 > 3:30:17a bit like my front room. You have got a new front room, you're happy!
3:30:17 > 3:30:23Now, will he play a touch firmer or same solid delivery? Same sort of
3:30:23 > 3:30:29weight perhaps and roll into the green? He looks like he has narrowed
3:30:29 > 3:30:35it slightly. Will he get back in time?
3:30:35 > 3:30:41Very close, wasn't it?
3:30:42 > 3:30:47Definitely one red. Measure for the second.
3:30:53 > 3:31:05You can see the club shirts are being worn.
3:31:24 > 3:31:34This is a tricky little measure this one. These are very accurate. Red
3:31:34 > 3:31:42against the two green.
3:31:45 > 3:31:49Take that one away, that's not in, it's this other one that's in
3:31:49 > 3:31:59question.Yes. Looks like two. Good call from the measurer. Two shots,
3:31:59 > 3:32:05Paul Foster. APPLAUSE.
3:32:05 > 3:32:11Always like to see the calipers coming out, John, because they're so
3:32:11 > 3:32:20accurate.
3:32:20 > 3:32:34He's edging in front in the set, Paul, 7-4.The mat out once again.
3:32:34 > 3:32:40It's a default position for Paul Foster if things aren't going well.
3:32:40 > 3:32:50He'll play a short jack length.
3:32:54 > 3:32:58A lot of people might think it's easier because it's short, but it's
3:32:58 > 3:33:09quite the opposite.Yes. The control of the wait on the line.
3:33:13 > 3:33:20Not quite so comfortable at this length.
3:33:21 > 3:33:26Need to run, Paul.That's better but only slightly.Still a chance here
3:33:26 > 3:33:34for Lea. Needs to get the bowl on a good line knew. -- now.From Paul's
3:33:34 > 3:33:43standards, that's a long way away.
3:34:05 > 3:34:10Bending to the jack from there. That's good.Just given too many
3:34:10 > 3:34:15chances, really. Chance for the second bowl to make it difficult for
3:34:15 > 3:34:21Paul.
3:34:21 > 3:34:30Paul.Missed it. Third bowl for Paul to get close. It's certainly on a
3:34:30 > 3:34:37narrow line.Too tight.Yes.I think he was looking at the gap, it was
3:34:37 > 3:34:41never easy to control down there with the short bowl in the way.A
3:34:41 > 3:34:51bit extra weight needed.
3:34:51 > 3:34:53bit extra weight needed.They're always difficult shots aren't they?
3:34:53 > 3:34:58They are, very difficult to judge. Paul's got cover here at the same
3:34:58 > 3:35:01time as that. If I was Lea, I would be tempted to run this a little
3:35:01 > 3:35:06quicker. He could draw the shot. It's not an easy draw. The forehand
3:35:06 > 3:35:12is dodgy. The back hand is blocked. Could do worse than to play through
3:35:12 > 3:35:16it. The front plant looks like it's going on to it.
3:35:48 > 3:35:54Just inside the line... Two shots, Paul Foster.A bit of a
3:35:54 > 3:36:02loose head. That's what Paul Foster was trying to achieve. He wanted to
3:36:02 > 3:36:07loosen off. That's what's happened. Now he's in a strong position, 9-4
3:36:07 > 3:36:10with three ends to go.
3:36:30 > 3:36:34Paul would have been used to playing in the pairs and mixed pairs
3:36:34 > 3:36:40competition and had a lot of bowls on the carpet as well. That would
3:36:40 > 3:36:44have added to his obvious advantage of playing in the portable rink for
3:36:44 > 3:36:54over 20 years.
3:36:58 > 3:37:04How many times have you seen practises and then the bowls come
3:37:04 > 3:37:14out and are thrown all over the park.
3:37:18 > 3:37:23Lea's lost his length as well.
3:37:23 > 3:37:31APPLAUSE.
3:37:41 > 3:37:55Attacking early. To me that was the right shot to play. Open it up. Paul
3:37:55 > 3:38:00will be aware of the fact that even if he picks up a single here, he's
3:38:00 > 3:38:12still in full control. The like that N one.No.If it beats the green,
3:38:12 > 3:38:16and it has, it means it's the shorter of the two bowls that go
3:38:16 > 3:38:22out.
3:38:22 > 3:38:28out. He's fighting with himself with a bit of turmoil out there.Going
3:38:28 > 3:38:40again.He's close this time.
3:38:47 > 3:38:58Two red. Go deep.
3:39:10 > 3:39:17My goodness me. To lose the bowl! A puff of the cheeks. Can't blame you,
3:39:17 > 3:39:24Paul.
3:39:24 > 3:39:30Paul. Back in the ditch. And again. Oh, dear, oh, dear. That was
3:39:30 > 3:39:35unlucky. A smile from Lea but my goodness that was unlucky. Very
3:39:35 > 3:39:40difficult to do that.
3:39:40 > 3:39:44difficult to do that. Paul Foster in an 11-4 lead. We'll move on to the
3:39:44 > 3:39:50red button in a couple of minutes. You can join us there. A fascinating
3:39:50 > 3:39:58game which looks as though it will go to a tie-break.
3:40:02 > 3:40:06go to a tie-break. We should see this end out. Four minutes or so
3:40:06 > 3:40:21left on BBC Two. So we expect a tie-break to be on the red button.
3:40:49 > 3:40:57Just running through with the first bowl. To be fair, he could easily
3:40:57 > 3:41:01have come off the red bowl and buried the jack.Yes and he had to
3:41:01 > 3:41:08play the two drives. He was unfortunate to get the gap.
3:41:09 > 3:41:11unfortunate to get the gap. He'll be thinking about the tie-break. It's
3:41:11 > 3:41:18probably impossible to get back in this set.
3:41:23 > 3:41:26Paul would have to come back big time and I don't think that is
3:41:26 > 3:41:31possible.
3:41:42 > 3:41:46You wonder if it meant to a tie-break, Paul might hope to win
3:41:46 > 3:41:49the toss and keep the length of the jack. It might be a vital jack
3:41:49 > 3:41:54length.I think it is because the longer jack length is certainly
3:41:54 > 3:41:59suiting Lee. See said it from the beginning how long would it take
3:41:59 > 3:42:03before Paul Foster got to the short jack length and it's proven to be
3:42:03 > 3:42:09valuable for him. No doubt about that.Picked most of the shots up on
3:42:09 > 3:42:14this length.
3:42:14 > 3:42:19this length. At this length, it's unusual to be this far away. Doesn't
3:42:19 > 3:42:29want to lose a three here. He wants to get into the tie-break.
3:42:47 > 3:42:54That should be enough to take us into the tie-break.
3:42:54 > 3:43:02This will be a practise bowl.
3:43:05 > 3:43:12Just underneath. Paul Foster. Takes out the single. Takes the second
3:43:12 > 3:43:18set. 12-4. And we are into the three end tie-break.
3:43:22 > 3:43:30We thought it was going to go this way.
3:43:30 > 3:43:4012-4. It will be a fascinating three end.
3:43:45 > 3:43:49We are going to make way for the Australian Open highlights here on
3:43:49 > 3:43:52BBC Two. If you want to stay with the bowls, press red and see the
3:43:52 > 3:43:57conclusion of this match between the defending champion Paul Foster and
3:43:57 > 3:43:59Lea Blackham in this tie-break.
